636: Opening a Book Backward

00:00:09 ◼   ► From Relay, this is Upgrade Episode 6

00:00:13 ◼   ► for September.

00:00:15 ◼   ► 9th, 2026.

00:00:16 ◼   ► It is a Wednesday because we just watched the Apple event.

00:00:20 ◼   ► This episode is brought to you by Keeper Squarespace and Factor.

00:00:23 ◼   ► My name is Mike Hurley and I am joined by Jason Snow.

00:00:25 ◼   ► Hi, Jason.

00:00:26 ◼   ► Happy Wednesday, Mike.

00:00:28 ◼   ► Happy Wednesday indeed.

00:00:29 ◼   ► I surprised myself by looking at the date.

00:00:32 ◼   ► Um yeah, we as we're recording this, the Apple event has basically just finished,

00:00:37 ◼   ► like twenty minutes ago or something like that.

00:00:39 ◼   ► Um and so we're coming hot off the presses.

00:00:41 ◼   ► I have a lot of notes.

00:00:42 ◼   ► I'm not sure that these notes make logical sense, but we'll work it out

00:00:46 ◼   ► and I've got product pages in front of me.

00:00:48 ◼   ► But no one wants to hear about any of this because I have a

00:00:50 ◼   ► snow talk question.

00:00:51 ◼   ► It comes from me and I want to know, Jason, what did you think

00:00:55 ◼   ► of the opening video for the iPhone event.

00:00:58 ◼   ► Oh I like so we sort of are getting right into it with Snell

00:01:01 ◼   ► Talk.

00:01:01 ◼   ► That's interesting.

00:01:02 ◼   ► Um I I wasn't sure because I'm thinking, you know, we just shot on

00:01:08 ◼   ► iPhone and it starts to feel like one of those videos where there's the

00:01:11 ◼   ► Indiana Jones like guy walking away from the fire.

00:01:14 ◼   ► I'm like it's like those videos they do about cinematic mode.

00:01:16 ◼   ► But then it turns out that it's this thing about like, Oh, but i

00:01:21 ◼   ► we could start this way, this would be a great opening scene, and this

00:01:24 ◼   ► would be a great opening shot.

00:01:26 ◼   ► And, you know, th there's the samurai running through the forest or and the

00:01:30 ◼   ► and the getaway driver.

00:01:32 ◼   ► And then Tim Cook does the voiceover and what a great pivot that was.

00:01:36 ◼   ► I love that part.

00:01:38 ◼   ► You know, h disappearing into Apple Park and he says, uh, it's the your

00:01:42 ◼   ► main character and Tim K Cook appears and goes, Oh, it's not me.

00:01:46 ◼   ► That's your guy.

00:01:47 ◼   ► And points behind him.

00:01:48 ◼   ► I'm not your guy.

00:01:49 ◼   ► That's your guy.

00:01:50 ◼   ► Like That's your guy.

00:01:51 ◼   ► There are many ways to do something like this wrong.

00:01:56 ◼   ► Right.

00:01:56 ◼   ► Many.

00:01:57 ◼   ► So many.

00:01:57 ◼   ► And I think it was really I think it was quite heartwarming, actually, I

00:02:04 ◼   ► think, as as a moment to be like, yo, he's here, it's a cameo,

00:02:08 ◼   ► it's fun, he's the guy you know.

00:02:09 ◼   ► Actually, I'm not the guy you're looking for, you know?

00:02:12 ◼   ► These are not the CEOs you're looking for.

00:02:14 ◼   ► That's the one over there and turn us Turnus is being an action hero

00:02:17 ◼   ► walking in the background.

00:02:18 ◼   ► It was I thought it was pretty sweet.

00:02:20 ◼   ► Yeah, I think this is the right they nailed the tone here, which is

00:02:24 ◼   ► you don't want it to be too jokey.

00:02:26 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:02:26 ◼   ► But also having it be a little bit light and just having it be

00:02:29 ◼   ► like, ah, you're surprised that it's me, but you shouldn't be, 'cause um I'm

00:02:33 ◼   ► not who I'm talking about.

00:02:35 ◼   ► Like it it was a good setup, it was well scripted.

00:02:37 ◼   ► Good uh good performance by Tim Cook there going out on a high high

00:02:41 ◼   ► dramatically.

00:02:42 ◼   ► I thought that was really historically not Great when it comes to the performances.

00:02:47 ◼   ► Uh also, I think it's worth you know, like there are lots of people

00:02:53 ◼   ► watching the iPhone event that do not know that Tim Cook is not the

00:02:56 ◼   ► CEO of Apple anymore.

00:02:58 ◼   ► So Tim is gonna say, Oh no, it's not me.

00:03:00 ◼   ► You gotta you gotta talk to that guy.

00:03:02 ◼   ► And then and then John Turnis does his thing where he says I'm ver

00:03:05 ◼   ► you know, honored to be representing everybody here, which is a a good again,

00:03:09 ◼   ► you don't wanna do too much of that, but um I I think having

00:03:13 ◼   ► that actual passing of the of the baton there is the right thing to

00:03:17 ◼   ► do.

00:03:17 ◼   ► And they they they hit the tone right.

00:03:19 ◼   ► Yeah, and I I liked that in doing it that way, um, Turnus didn't

00:03:24 ◼   ► have to do the kind of like thanks Tim, kind of thing.

00:03:28 ◼   ► Like I I I think they were able to kind of avoid that by

00:03:31 ◼   ► having the baton pass rather than him just showing up and being like, I'm

00:03:36 ◼   ► the new CEO.

00:03:37 ◼   ► I loved him.

00:03:37 ◼   ► You know, like it just it's not really not really.

00:03:40 ◼   ► And by the way, hello was the opening.

00:03:43 ◼   ► Ah, yeah.

00:03:43 ◼   ► Hello.

00:03:44 ◼   ► He says hello.

00:03:45 ◼   ► Which I think is good because, you know, I I was talking to I

00:03:47 ◼   ► think I was talking to Adina about this because she was asking, like, do

00:03:50 ◼   ► you think you'll say good morning?

00:03:51 ◼   ► And it's like, no.

00:03:52 ◼   ► And I was like, also I I believe this to be the case.

00:03:56 ◼   ► Jobs used to say good morning, right?

00:03:58 ◼   ► And then Tim Cook started saying it and he made it like a caricature

00:04:01 ◼   ► thing of of his

00:04:03 ◼   ► he went over the top with it.

00:04:04 ◼   ► But Steve Jobs, that was yeah, that was my memory.

00:04:06 ◼   ► When I wrote my piece after Steve died, one of the things I I

00:04:09 ◼   ► I said I would miss is I really liked settling in an Apple event

00:04:13 ◼   ► and all that all the tension and all the anticipation and all of that.

00:04:16 ◼   ► And then before you heard before you saw him, you heard him.

00:04:19 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:04:20 ◼   ► Cause as he was walking on stage, Steve would always be like, Good morning.

00:04:23 ◼   ► Uh and then yes, it became a good morning, Tim Cook kind of thing.

00:04:27 ◼   ► But like it's fine.

00:04:28 ◼   ► It's it's there are other references in here that that he made instead.

00:04:32 ◼   ► Oh yeah, we'll get to that in a minute.

00:04:33 ◼   ► All right.

00:04:33 ◼   ► If you like to uh open the show with a snow talk of your

00:04:36 ◼   ► own, if you don't have access to the show document like me, you can

00:04:40 ◼   ► go to upgradefeedback.com and send in your Snelltalk question for a future episode.

00:04:45 ◼   ► Uh let's start out by uh assessing the result of the draft.

00:04:49 ◼   ► So last week we played our game, which we play before every keynote, uh

00:04:52 ◼   ► where we take a look uh uh at the what we think might happen.

00:04:56 ◼   ► We make our predictions.

00:04:57 ◼   ► Should we run through this real quick?

00:04:59 ◼   ► Yeah, let's run through it.

00:05:01 ◼   ► All right.

00:05:01 ◼   ► So my picks.

00:05:03 ◼   ► IPhones powered by t new two nanometer chip, yes.

00:05:06 ◼   ► Correct.

00:05:07 ◼   ► iPhone fold i uh folding iPhone supports split view, yes.

00:05:11 ◼   ► I said the words.

00:05:12 ◼   ► iPhone folding iPhone uses touch ID button only.

00:05:17 ◼   ► We will talk about all of this in more detail.

00:05:19 ◼   ► Yes, yes.

00:05:19 ◼   ► Apple will make specific boast about on device AI performance on A twenty.

00:05:23 ◼   ► That was kind of a no brainer.

00:05:25 ◼   ► But like, oh, it's great for AI.

00:05:26 ◼   ► It's got two neural engines.

00:05:29 ◼   ► Like Johnny would not stop talking about it.

00:05:31 ◼   ► Like everyone was talking about it.

00:05:33 ◼   ► It's like I don't think that many people are doing on device AI with

00:05:37 ◼   ► uh third party L L Ms on their iPhones.

00:05:39 ◼   ► But if they want to, they can.

00:05:41 ◼   ► Just wait.

00:05:41 ◼   ► It's gonna it's gonna yeah, you g you're gonna be anyway uh I Apple

00:05:45 ◼   ► doesn't mention anything about base model iPhone eighteens not being announced.

00:05:49 ◼   ► It's like what what are you even talking about?

00:05:51 ◼   ► We didn't.

00:05:53 ◼   ► New satellite connectivity features on iPhone.

00:05:56 ◼   ► There were no new

00:05:57 ◼   ► So I missed that one.

00:05:58 ◼   ► This is never gonna happen.

00:06:00 ◼   ► No new features.

00:06:01 ◼   ► Uh folding iPhone comes in monochrome colors, white, silver, black, gray.

00:06:05 ◼   ► I'm gonna give me this because what is the color of the night sky?

00:06:10 ◼   ► It's black.

00:06:10 ◼   ► It's not for black.

00:06:12 ◼   ► It's it's like space gray.

00:06:13 ◼   ► It's bluey.

00:06:14 ◼   ► But darker is night sky.

00:06:16 ◼   ► I'm happy with with this.

00:06:17 ◼   ► I mean if I really wanted to argue, it's kind of bluey.

00:06:20 ◼   ► But it's kinda, but not a night sky.

00:06:22 ◼   ► I mean that could have been a it looks like midnight, I think, from

00:06:25 ◼   ► the product image.

00:06:26 ◼   ► It's night sky is

00:06:28 ◼   ► what color is space but black.

00:06:30 ◼   ► I'll give it.

00:06:30 ◼   ► Um it's not gray, I'll pro model I took the two hundred price price

00:06:35 ◼   ► increase over the uh previous generation, it was not.

00:06:39 ◼   ► It was one hundred.

00:06:40 ◼   ► Um so in our iPhone category, I have us I have me down as

00:06:45 ◼   ► um six six out of the case.

00:06:46 ◼   ► Should we run through my iPhone category in the case?

00:06:48 ◼   ► Yes, please.

00:06:49 ◼   ► Right.

00:06:49 ◼   ► One One iPhone color contains the word blue.

00:06:51 ◼   ► No, it contains the color blue but not the word.

00:06:54 ◼   ► Glacier.

00:06:55 ◼   ► Apple brands the folding iPhone display.

00:06:57 ◼   ► They it had a brand but not a unique one.

00:06:59 ◼   ► Not a new brand, no.

00:07:00 ◼   ► Couldn't it not a special brand.

00:07:02 ◼   ► It's not a folding whatever.

00:07:03 ◼   ► It's just a regular old whatever.

00:07:05 ◼   ► Okay.

00:07:06 ◼   ► Apple introduces new features for apps running on the folding iPhone's internal display.

00:07:10 ◼   ► Oh boy didn't.

00:07:11 ◼   ► Oh wow, okay.

00:07:13 ◼   ► Oh boy did they uh uh real quick by the way, we're gonna pause

00:07:17 ◼   ► here uh as is tradition now, underscore David Smith is over in the corner

00:07:21 ◼   ► currently downloading uh the the GM of iOS twenty seven.

00:07:25 ◼   ► Nice.

00:07:25 ◼   ► Underscore was him next to me.

00:07:26 ◼   ► And when they're starting to show all the UIs changes, he's like, Oh my

00:07:30 ◼   ► god.

00:07:31 ◼   ► Because d developers, I mean I'm sure developers are happy they've got a month

00:07:35 ◼   ► because the simulator is needed now because the the tw the tab bars and

00:07:39 ◼   ► the toolbars are in completely different places.

00:07:41 ◼   ► It's unbelievable.

00:07:42 ◼   ► It's wild stuff.

00:07:43 ◼   ► Uh Apple makes specific claim about that how there's essentially no crease on the

00:07:47 ◼   ► folding phone.

00:07:47 ◼   ► They did.

00:07:48 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:07:48 ◼   ► They did.

00:07:49 ◼   ► They talked about a crease at least.

00:07:51 ◼   ► One new photo related OS feature is added.

00:07:53 ◼   ► Yep.

00:07:54 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:07:54 ◼   ► Uh claim of improved iPhone battery life.

00:07:57 ◼   ► I got that.

00:07:57 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:07:58 ◼   ► Folding iPhone is the thinnest Apple device ever.

00:08:00 ◼   ► It isn't it's the thinnest iPhone, but it missed out by point one millimeter

00:08:05 ◼   ► on the iPad Pro.

00:08:07 ◼   ► And the iPhone Pro models, I said they would uh start between a hundred

00:08:11 ◼   ► and a hundred and ninety nine, and it's a hundred more.

00:08:13 ◼   ► Uh for the

00:08:14 ◼   ► hundred.

00:08:15 ◼   ► Okay, so by that gives us uh six to you and five to me.

00:08:19 ◼   ► Exactly.

00:08:20 ◼   ► For the iPhone.

00:08:21 ◼   ► Brings us to the other picks.

00:08:22 ◼   ► Uh Apple Watch series twelve, I said it had a ceramic option.

00:08:26 ◼   ► Yes.

00:08:27 ◼   ► It did.

00:08:28 ◼   ► I I'm so happy for you.

00:08:29 ◼   ► It has a new chip, it does.

00:08:31 ◼   ► And the Ultra Four was announced.

00:08:33 ◼   ► It was.

00:08:34 ◼   ► I uh however, the new home pods and the home pad product, uh it's

00:08:40 ◼   ► gonna be a different event for home products.

00:08:43 ◼   ► This was not the day.

00:08:44 ◼   ► Not the day.

00:08:45 ◼   ► Um and so I got three out of five there.

00:08:47 ◼   ► How'd you do?

00:08:48 ◼   ► Uh John Turnus has a major role in unveiling at least one product.

00:08:52 ◼   ► Uh he did.

00:08:52 ◼   ► And he had a role in all of them, which was interesting.

00:08:55 ◼   ► They did the thing that I think we spoke about this.

00:08:57 ◼   ► They're like passing backwards and forwards, like much more.

00:09:00 ◼   ► Um and he was much more like uh vocal.

00:09:03 ◼   ► Uh previously unseen watch faces, there were a couple, uh, no home pad device.

00:09:08 ◼   ► Uh the Apple Watch did have enhanced Siri AI support and Watch Series twelve

00:09:13 ◼   ► adds a new workout feature.

00:09:15 ◼   ► We went backwards and forwards on this one, but this is one of those

00:09:17 ◼   ► scenarios where it doesn't matter because either Jason wins nine eight or it's nine

00:09:22 ◼   ► nine and he wins the tie.

00:09:23 ◼   ► So congratulations, Jason.

00:09:25 ◼   ► Thank you.

00:09:26 ◼   ► Super close.

00:09:27 ◼   ► I retain the tie looking.

00:09:28 ◼   ► They're always close.

00:09:29 ◼   ► And they're not I don't think they're always close.

00:09:32 ◼   ► I had some real real clangers back in the day.

00:09:35 ◼   ► Yeah, we've we've we had a lot of tiebreakers and stuff like that.

00:09:38 ◼   ► I i yeah, I think it's not a new workout feature 'cause that the

00:09:41 ◼   ► feature you're thinking of isn't a workout.

00:09:43 ◼   ► It's it's a different feature that will tell you my it that's the I

00:09:47 ◼   ► like to call it the my Apple Watch told me that I couldn't work

00:09:50 ◼   ► today, so I'm not gonna w come into work today, boss, kind of feature.

00:09:53 ◼   ► You're like you're not ready for it.

00:09:54 ◼   ► Just stay home.

00:09:55 ◼   ► I see I see your argument.

00:09:57 ◼   ► But I can also argue that the iPhone is blue.

00:09:59 ◼   ► But nevertheless, we're not going to Nevertheless, it doesn't matter.

00:10:02 ◼   ► It's at worst a tie and at best a win for Jesus.

00:10:05 ◼   ► And it was a short a short uh video.

00:10:08 ◼   ► So yeah, I get the under.

00:10:10 ◼   ► The under wins.

00:10:11 ◼   ► That is what happens when there is a whole product category that we thought

00:10:14 ◼   ► would exist and didn't exist uh in this event, which is the case.

00:10:17 ◼   ► I mean it was way under the that's true.

00:10:20 ◼   ► That's true.

00:10:20 ◼   ► And uh we also uh oh we're gonna talk in upgrade plus about the

00:10:25 ◼   ► Saint Jude challenge that we did a game called the Saint Jude Challenge.

00:10:28 ◼   ► We do this with the iPhone events.

00:10:30 ◼   ► Uh and speaking of Jason, what a what an incredible segue.

00:10:34 ◼   ► Uh I want to take a quick moment uh to let everybody know that

00:10:37 ◼   ► we are raising uh funds and we're we're fundraising as we always do for

00:10:42 ◼   ► Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital during September because it is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

00:10:48 ◼   ► So we're asking our community to come together to support the life saving work

00:10:52 ◼   ► of Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.

00:10:55 ◼   ► I want to talk a little bit about why we do this and what

00:10:58 ◼   ► some of the the some of the money that that you everyone's raising, what

00:11:02 ◼   ► it is going towards.

00:11:04 ◼   ► So Saint Jude recently established a partnership to increase worldwide access to pediatric radiotherapy.

00:11:10 ◼   ► So while Saint Jude is based in Memphis, Tennessee, which is where uh Stephen

00:11:14 ◼   ► Hackett lives and you know, Stephen's family has has has seen the effects uh

00:11:18 ◼   ► of the treatment at Saint Jude, they are focused on helping cancer uh childhood

00:11:23 ◼   ► cancer survival worldwide.

00:11:25 ◼   ► So St.

00:11:26 ◼   ► Jude is going to be investing four point five million dollars over three years

00:11:30 ◼   ► to help the International Atomic Energy Agency expand access to pediatric radiotherapy in low

00:11:37 ◼   ► and middle income countries, also known as LMICs.

00:11:40 ◼   ► A key contributor to lower survival rates in LMICs is limited access to clinical

00:11:45 ◼   ► imaging.

00:11:46 ◼   ► Without such access, children face delays or errors in diagnosis.

00:11:50 ◼   ► This partnership will focus on creating materials to train specialists, radiation oncologists, radiotherapy technicians,

00:11:57 ◼   ► and medical physicists to improve this diagnostic gap.

00:12:02 ◼   ► This effort highlights St.

00:12:03 ◼   ► Jude's commitment to ensuring children everywhere have access to diagnostics and treatment.

00:12:08 ◼   ► This is just one of I mean Saint Jude is so close to our

00:12:11 ◼   ► hearts, but I love the more that I've learned about this incredible institution and

00:12:15 ◼   ► how far and wide um their work reaches, the more and more proud I

00:12:20 ◼   ► am to say that we have raised I mean, we are actually getting incredibly

00:12:24 ◼   ► close right now to a lifetime fundraising um total of five million dollars that

00:12:30 ◼   ► we have raised since 2019.

00:12:33 ◼   ► I am so proud every year of just how engaged our community is.

00:12:39 ◼   ► Um it it really means the world to all of us.

00:12:42 ◼   ► Uh I'm so thankful for it.

00:12:44 ◼   ► Um and I want everybody to go and find out more and they can

00:12:47 ◼   ► donate today.

00:12:48 ◼   ► Please go to Saintju.org slash relay.

00:12:51 ◼   ► There's a few things you can do.

00:12:52 ◼   ► You can find out more about give uh some uh incentives that you can

00:12:55 ◼   ► unlock for giving your own uh donations.

00:12:58 ◼   ► So there's some some rewards that are available to you.

00:13:00 ◼   ► Um there's also information about how you can create a fundraiser of your own.

00:13:05 ◼   ► Uh by signing up and registering to fundraise, you can uh donate through your

00:13:10 ◼   ► own fundraiser, you can also encourage your friends your family, your co workers to

00:13:13 ◼   ► designate too.

00:13:14 ◼   ► This can spread your the impact that you're able to have for the kids

00:13:17 ◼   ► of St.

00:13:18 ◼   ► Jude.

00:13:18 ◼   ► And there are some really wonderful incentives uh this year that which you should

00:13:21 ◼   ► also go and see.

00:13:42 ◼   ► Saintgew.org slash relay.

00:13:45 ◼   ► Thank you.

00:13:46 ◼   ► Before we start talking about some products, Jason, I want to get some kind

00:13:50 ◼   ► of like top level reactions from you.

00:13:52 ◼   ► So this is John Tannis's first keynote as CEO of Apple.

00:13:56 ◼   ► How do you think he did?

00:13:58 ◼   ► I think he did fine.

00:14:00 ◼   ► I mean, it's all pre recorded, so if he didn't do fine, they didn't

00:14:03 ◼   ► use that tick and then got him to do it.

00:14:05 ◼   ► I thought I th it was good.

00:14:06 ◼   ► He He is I think he is present.

00:14:08 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:14:08 ◼   ► Um, I think he is bringing, you know, the weight of being a knowledgeable

00:14:14 ◼   ► kind of hardware guy.

00:14:16 ◼   ► And then also I think the most important thing was that he did some

00:14:22 ◼   ► very executive level commenting right at the very beginning, right?

00:14:26 ◼   ► So the first thing he does after he says hello and how grateful he

00:14:30 ◼   ► is to be representing Apple is place the iPhone in the context of Apple

00:14:35 ◼   ► strategy.

00:14:36 ◼   ► And that is a CEO job, right?

00:14:38 ◼   ► That is the that is the CEO job to say, why do we think

00:14:42 ◼   ► the iPhone is so important?

00:14:44 ◼   ► In doing so, by the way, he made I I I I feel like

00:14:49 ◼   ► it must be intentional by everybody's part.

00:14:51 ◼   ► It has to be intentional.

00:14:53 ◼   ► The the he is recasting a classic Steve Jobs

00:14:59 ◼   ► approach to Apple's product philosophy, which is the intelligent personal hub, which is uh

00:15:06 ◼   ► hearkening back to the digital hub strategy that Steve Jobs talked about, you know,

00:15:12 ◼   ► 25, 26 years ago.

00:15:15 ◼   ► Um, I've been thinking about that a lot because we are doing, of course,

00:15:19 ◼   ► our other podcast, Design in California.

00:15:22 ◼   ► Um, we are currently releasing episodes about the 1990s, uh uh OS transition, but

00:15:29 ◼   ► our series after that is about the iPod.

00:15:32 ◼   ► And so I was doing a lot of research about the uh origins of

00:15:36 ◼   ► the iPod, including, of course, um, Steve Jobs and the digital hub strategy, because

00:15:42 ◼   ► that's the whole idea that you at you your uh your Mac is at

00:15:45 ◼   ► the center and all these other digital devices are out there.

00:15:47 ◼   ► So you you you shoot video, you take pictures and you bring them into

00:15:50 ◼   ► your Mac and your Mac is at the center of your life.

00:15:52 ◼   ► Obviously, that was a very, you know, year 2000 kind of thing.

00:15:56 ◼   ► But um that hub strategy and using that word to talk about it this

00:16:04 ◼   ► intelligent personal hub that is what would be the perfect one is the way

00:16:08 ◼   ► John Turnus casts it.

00:16:09 ◼   ► And he lists a bunch of attributes.

00:16:12 ◼   ► And, you know, it's it it it's I liked it because I try to

00:16:15 ◼   ► make this a a very similar argument, which is why I think the smartphone

00:16:19 ◼   ► isn't going anywhere, even in an AI era.

00:16:22 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:16:22 ◼   ► It's all of these reasons.

00:16:23 ◼   ► It's that you want to have something that's always with you, that's connected at

00:16:27 ◼   ► a to the internet at high speed.

00:16:29 ◼   ► It's got a powerful processor.

00:16:31 ◼   ► It's got a nice screen because we do like looking at things on the

00:16:34 ◼   ► screen.

00:16:35 ◼   ► Um, it's got uh cameras and speakers and microphones, you know, and and that

00:16:41 ◼   ► you it since it's gonna be in your pocket, it needs to last all

00:16:44 ◼   ► day.

00:16:44 ◼   ► And that's what he th th lays out for even in a a world

00:16:49 ◼   ► of AI and uh all sorts of accessories that you want your smartphone at

00:16:54 ◼   ► the center of it.

00:16:55 ◼   ► And of course he says 'cause he's the CEO of Apple, of course the

00:16:58 ◼   ► i iPhone is the best of those.

00:17:00 ◼   ► But like it's hard not to get away from thinking those of us who've

00:17:05 ◼   ► been around watching it for a while thinking that this is a nod to

00:17:07 ◼   ► Steve Jobs and the digital hub strategy for for the twenty twenties.

00:17:11 ◼   ► Yeah, 'cause you know, in the early two thousands it was about you have

00:17:15 ◼   ► all these other physical devices for different capabilities in your life.

00:17:19 ◼   ► You need one place to be able to manage and use the information and

00:17:24 ◼   ► have that at the center.

00:17:25 ◼   ► And the it the twenty twenties version of this is you have digital assets

00:17:29 ◼   ► that are spread all over the web in different clouds, et cetera, et cetera.

00:17:34 ◼   ► And you need one device to manage them.

00:17:36 ◼   ► And this is absolutely them coming out strong to be like, all these AI

00:17:41 ◼   ► devices you're hearing about, don't worry about it.

00:17:44 ◼   ► We make the best device for everything.

00:17:46 ◼   ► It's the iPhone.

00:17:46 ◼   ► What are you mad?

00:17:48 ◼   ► Why would you consider anything else?

00:17:49 ◼   ► You know, you also mentioned like the he also said intersection.

00:17:54 ◼   ► The intersection of like capability and context, which I also believe is going back

00:17:59 ◼   ► to the intersection of creative is it the cre creative liberal arts and technology?

00:18:05 ◼   ► Right?

00:18:06 ◼   ► That was the You got there.

00:18:07 ◼   ► I got there.

00:18:08 ◼   ► I mean look.

00:18:08 ◼   ► Creative is a couple blocks down.

00:18:10 ◼   ► It's yeah, you know.

00:18:11 ◼   ► There's been lots of memes on this over the years, so it's hard to

00:18:14 ◼   ► remember.

00:18:14 ◼   ► But like I like you, I absolutely believe I mean and it's bookended, right?

00:18:19 ◼   ► So he says he has personal hub and the intersection at the start, and

00:18:23 ◼   ► he has one more thing at the end.

00:18:24 ◼   ► Like If if you want any more hints as to the way they are

00:18:29 ◼   ► trying to to paint John Turnus, you don't need him.

00:18:33 ◼   ► Like they want you to think this guy's product guy.

00:18:35 ◼   ► And I think, you know, we're obviously gonna talk about the IF and Joe

00:18:38 ◼   ► in a minute, but like the way the iPhone duo was presented as an

00:18:42 ◼   ► like they are presenting it as a series of technological and product breakthroughs.

00:18:47 ◼   ► That is how they are presenting this.

00:18:49 ◼   ► Yes.

00:18:49 ◼   ► They're doing this on purpose.

00:18:51 ◼   ► They want you to know who he is.

00:18:52 ◼   ► And like you know this is the all the stuff that we've been talking

00:18:55 ◼   ► about leading up to this point.

00:18:58 ◼   ► They chose this moment carefully of when John Turnus would be stepping into the

00:19:02 ◼   ► shoes and I think that this keynote it includes actually lots of big product

00:19:08 ◼   ► stuff.

00:19:09 ◼   ► And I think that's clear.

00:19:11 ◼   ► This is not an accident.

00:19:12 ◼   ► No, no.

00:19:13 ◼   ► This is not an accident.

00:19:14 ◼   ► This is this is part of the transition plan.

00:19:17 ◼   ► Yep.

00:19:17 ◼   ► Is to have these products ready in this moment for John Turnus to introduce.

00:19:22 ◼   ► It's all part of the same story.

00:19:24 ◼   ► Did you have any more thoughts about the presentation or the order of things?

00:19:27 ◼   ► Like I I was struck by how light everything was by and large.

00:19:31 ◼   ► Like they will usually we spend quite a lot of time in darkness

00:19:36 ◼   ► You know, Jaws was at in LA at sunset, and so he got into

00:19:39 ◼   ► the darkness, but most because we likes the darkness, I guess.

00:19:41 ◼   ► Uh but mostly not.

00:19:43 ◼   ► Um, I think you uh like the advantage of having something like the iPhone.

00:19:49 ◼   ► Duo in your presentation is it gives you the power to put the iPhone

00:19:54 ◼   ► Pro at the start, which is great, right?

00:19:56 ◼   ► To kick it off with your most important product, to be able to just

00:19:59 ◼   ► like first thing out the gate.

00:20:01 ◼   ► We're gonna talk first off, the entire context put down by John Turnus is

00:20:06 ◼   ► this is about the iPhone.

00:20:07 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:20:07 ◼   ► Which really says a lot, but it's not wrong.

00:20:09 ◼   ► It's like, well, AirPods attached to your iPhone.

00:20:11 ◼   ► Apple Watch works with your iPhone.

00:20:13 ◼   ► It you know, and is sending health data to your iPhone.

00:20:15 ◼   ► So it's all in the context of the iPhone, but to go out with

00:20:19 ◼   ► the iPhone Pro as your initial uh product is a coming at it from

00:20:24 ◼   ► a position of strength.

00:20:25 ◼   ► So I I appreciated that.

00:20:27 ◼   ► And you can do that when you've got one more thing at the end,

00:20:29 ◼   ► which is a an entirely new iPhone, the likes of which we haven't sefore.

00:20:32 ◼   ► So I think that that was um the ordering uh made sense.

00:20:36 ◼   ► If you've got those in your pocket, you could do it that way.

00:20:39 ◼   ► The other, uh only other kind of production point I wanted to say is

00:20:44 ◼   ► okay, so in the pandemic they switched from doing live events to doing these

00:20:49 ◼   ► video events.

00:20:50 ◼   ► And they've evolved over time and they've tried a whole bunch of different formats.

00:20:54 ◼   ► I think they've learned what they like, what they don't like.

00:20:58 ◼   ► And this time,

00:21:01 ◼   ► I I think they I think there was a note somebody m had about

00:21:06 ◼   ► how Apple event videos felt

00:21:10 ◼   ► static

00:21:12 ◼   ► um and almost lonely

00:21:15 ◼   ► because so often it would be a person in a setting all by themselves.

00:21:19 ◼   ► It's Johnny Shroogee alone in the lab.

00:21:21 ◼   ► It's the a it's Jeff Williams standing on a promontory on the Pa Pacific

00:21:26 ◼   ► coast somewhere, talking about the Apple Watch, all alone on a boulder or something,

00:21:31 ◼   ► right?

00:21:32 ◼   ► But not this.

00:21:34 ◼   ► Th this is and and then they they actually hung a lantern on it,

00:21:38 ◼   ► uh, to use a uh showbiz phrase, when they went to the back lot,

00:21:42 ◼   ► the studio back lot.

00:21:44 ◼   ► Um but even before they get there, everywhere at Apple Park where people are

00:21:49 ◼   ► presenting and elsewhere there are people in the background.

00:21:53 ◼   ► Apple Park is not empty except for the presenter, which I understand if you're

00:21:57 ◼   ► doing a secret Apple product video, um e having extras in the background is

00:22:02 ◼   ► not something you want to do when you get started, but they've been doing

00:22:04 ◼   ► it a long enough now that I think tonally they're like, No, I want

00:22:08 ◼   ► people in the background working while I talk.

00:22:10 ◼   ► I I want it to feel lived in, like we're all hard at work

00:22:13 ◼   ► doing this.

00:22:14 ◼   ► And then that extended to the other scenes where there would be, even if

00:22:18 ◼   ► you're in a cafe even if you're outside, there's like uh most of them,

00:22:22 ◼   ► not all of them, but most of them, there were people around.

00:22:25 ◼   ► It was a populated scene.

00:22:26 ◼   ► I think that was an interesting style choice for them.

00:22:28 ◼   ► And then my favorite bit is when they go to the studio back lot

00:22:33 ◼   ► that's when they got wacky, but they got wacky in a really, I mean,

00:22:39 ◼   ► I wouldn't say subtle, but if you're focused on the content, you're you're not

00:22:43 ◼   ► even gonna pay too much attention to it.

00:22:46 ◼   ► But like they're they're giving the presentations and it was multiple people, it was

00:22:50 ◼   ► Kayen, Drance, and some other people um at the studio back lot.

00:22:56 ◼   ► Like

00:22:58 ◼   ► Astronaut people in astronaut costumes go by on a golf cart.

00:23:01 ◼   ► And then you see a guy dressed like a Roman soldier, and then and

00:23:05 ◼   ► then later there's like a a squad of Roman soldiers who walk past in

00:23:10 ◼   ► the background, along with somebody who looks like a European kind of like seventeenth

00:23:15 ◼   ► century European dandy type figure.

00:23:18 ◼   ► Um all of that's going on in the background.

00:23:20 ◼   ► Then there's the um conversation that's happening in the rain where the presenter has

00:23:25 ◼   ► got an umbrella and then she steps forward and hands the umbrella to somebody

00:23:29 ◼   ► because it's a fake rainstorm with a camera there and there's a scene of

00:23:34 ◼   ► people in trench coats having a conversation in the rain.

00:23:37 ◼   ► And so it's it's all on the studio back lot, right?

00:23:40 ◼   ► But like at the same time, that is not content, it's color, but what

00:23:46 ◼   ► they're trying to do is say, This this presentation is happening in a world

00:23:52 ◼   ► that that has action happening around it.

00:23:55 ◼   ► And that was clearly like a watch word for them.

00:23:57 ◼   ► And I I appreciate that they made the effort and I like it.

00:24:00 ◼   ► Um the yes, the studio backlog was a little bit silly, but I immediately

00:24:04 ◼   ► noticed like, oh, there's people working at Apple Park.

00:24:07 ◼   ► And that's better.

00:24:08 ◼   ► It's better to have people at Apple Park in the background.

00:24:11 ◼   ► It's sending a message, but also it just makes it more.

00:24:14 ◼   ► I mean, let's be honest.

00:24:15 ◼   ► Sometimes you gotta wonder, is this how Johnny Shrugi lives?

00:24:19 ◼   ► Is he in a basement chip lab that's mostly dark and completely empty except

00:24:24 ◼   ► for him?

00:24:25 ◼   ► It's so a t tragic existence for Johnny Srooge.

00:24:28 ◼   ► Hey, look, you don't you don't get to be chief hardware officer for for

00:24:31 ◼   ► nothing, you know?

00:24:32 ◼   ► Sometimes you gotta make the sacrifice.

00:24:34 ◼   ► Well, if he's down there, other people should be down there working too, right?

00:24:37 ◼   ► So that's what they did.

00:24:38 ◼   ► So that's my other show biz note is just that they they made an

00:24:41 ◼   ► effort this time to make the whole thing seem more lived in.

00:24:45 ◼   ► And I thought that was maybe whoever gave them that note and made

00:24:52 ◼   ► This episode is brought to you in part by Keeper Security.

00:24:56 ◼   ► We're always switching devices.

00:24:58 ◼   ► I mean now more than ever, phones, laptops, work computers.

00:25:01 ◼   ► Every time you're stuck typing in variations of passwords, you can barely remember.

00:25:05 ◼   ► You shouldn't this.

00:25:07 ◼   ► That friction disappears the moment you start using Keeper because it remembers, fills in,

00:25:12 ◼   ► and just works wherever you're logging in from.

00:25:15 ◼   ► Keeper is a password manager that creates strong, unique passwords for all your accounts,

00:25:19 ◼   ► stores them securely in one place, and logs in automatically across your devices so

00:25:24 ◼   ► you never have to remember, guess, or worry about getting locked out of your

00:25:28 ◼   ► accounts again.

00:25:30 ◼   ► Whether you're running a household or a business, the same system extends to your

00:25:34 ◼   ► whole team.

00:25:34 ◼   ► You'll contr you control who has access to what, share logins securely with each

00:25:38 ◼   ► other, and keep data protected without adding extra work into anybody's day.

00:25:43 ◼   ► It doesn't feel like extra security and that's the whole point with the features

00:25:47 ◼   ► like autofill, face ID, fingerprint login.

00:25:50 ◼   ► It's fast enough that it protects that the protection happens in the background, whether

00:25:54 ◼   ► you're at your desk, on your couch, or elsewhere.

00:25:56 ◼   ► From individuals to families to growing companies, keep us the password manager that millions

00:26:01 ◼   ► turn to when they want their accounts actually locked down tight.

00:26:05 ◼   ► I care about my online security, so a password manager is a must for

00:26:09 ◼   ► me.

00:26:10 ◼   ► I know that it's important, right?

00:26:12 ◼   ► Like I know it's important to have strong, unique passwords.

00:26:14 ◼   ► I I wouldn't do it without a password manager.

00:26:17 ◼   ► Like there's no way I'd remember them all.

00:26:18 ◼   ► Keeper has got everything that you want and that I want to manage passwords.

00:26:22 ◼   ► They make it super easy to generate, save and access them from wherever you

00:26:26 ◼   ► are.

00:26:26 ◼   ► They have support for two-factor codes built in, so that extra layer of security

00:26:30 ◼   ► is really easy to manage.

00:26:31 ◼   ► They have autofill taken care of with a technology to call Keeperfilm.

00:26:34 ◼   ► But keeperfill, sorry, is on every platform, which is a must as I'm moving

00:26:39 ◼   ► around from device to device.

00:26:40 ◼   ► Right now, Keeper is offering listeners of this show sixty percent of personal and

00:26:44 ◼   ► family plans at keeper security.com slash upgrade pod.

00:26:48 ◼   ► This amazing offer is only available to you because you listen to this show.

00:26:52 ◼   ► That is K-E-E-P-E-R security.com slash upgrade pod for 60% of personal and family plans.

00:27:05 ◼   ► That is keepersecurity.com slash upgrade pod.

00:27:08 ◼   ► Our thanks to keeper security for their support of this show and all of

00:27:12 ◼   ► Relay.

00:27:14 ◼   ► iPhone Duo?

00:27:15 ◼   ► Let's start out the name Great.

00:27:18 ◼   ► Great name.

00:27:20 ◼   ► Love the name.

00:27:20 ◼   ► Yep.

00:27:21 ◼   ► Uh I didn't like Fold.

00:27:23 ◼   ► You know I didn't want Ultra.

00:27:25 ◼   ► iPhone Duo.

00:27:26 ◼   ► It makes perfect sense.

00:27:27 ◼   ► It's a great name.

00:27:29 ◼   ► You know?

00:27:29 ◼   ► I I did.

00:27:30 ◼   ► It was I'm just gonna do very minor victory lap here.

00:27:34 ◼   ► This is the name that I picked when we were picking in upgrade plus

00:27:37 ◼   ► last week.

00:27:37 ◼   ► Because I s I said Spoilers.

00:27:39 ◼   ► Let's let's say iPhone Duo.

00:27:40 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:27:41 ◼   ► I'm just saying.

00:27:42 ◼   ► I picked it.

00:27:43 ◼   ► So I like it.

00:27:43 ◼   ► I think it's a better new.

00:27:45 ◼   ► I didn't like Ultra.

00:27:46 ◼   ► I I I I didn't like fold.

00:27:49 ◼   ► Um I like the idea it's got two screens.

00:27:51 ◼   ► I like the idea that the internal screen is sort of two of the

00:27:54 ◼   ► outside screen, if you want to think of it that way, that you can

00:27:56 ◼   ► run two apps in it.

00:27:57 ◼   ► Like it's got a lot of that, plus it's got the history.

00:27:59 ◼   ► They used to make a laptop called the PowerBook Duo back in the day.

00:28:02 ◼   ► And this is a little like that plucking uh a word from Apple history

00:28:06 ◼   ► and then uh re-spinning it for the modern age.

00:28:10 ◼   ► I yeah, I I I like it as a name.

00:28:13 ◼   ► I think it's a good, good, good, good, good.

00:28:15 ◼   ► And it leaves Ultra in reserve for a a true Ultra iPhone

00:28:21 ◼   ► later.

00:28:23 ◼   ► I don't even really know where to start with this.

00:28:25 ◼   ► I guess maybe we should just start by talking about the hardware, like how

00:28:29 ◼   ► how it looks and and how it how it seems to function.

00:28:32 ◼   ► I mean we've seen versions of this phone in 3D prints, we've seen renders,

00:28:37 ◼   ► we've seen all kinds of stuff uh over time.

00:28:41 ◼   ► But I think it's one of these things where, you know, when you see

00:28:43 ◼   ► it in its full glory, you see people unfolding it, using it, you see

00:28:47 ◼   ► the the you know, the people using it in in staged environments you see

00:28:51 ◼   ► people using it in labs, etc.

00:28:53 ◼   ► It looks beautiful, right?

00:28:55 ◼   ► Like it i I I think that it is a very good looking phone.

00:28:59 ◼   ► It is an odd phone, you know, like the the outside screen

00:29:05 ◼   ► the the the the the corner radiuses are c are different, one side to

00:29:09 ◼   ► the other, right?

00:29:10 ◼   ► Like there is some peculiarity to it.

00:29:12 ◼   ► Yeah, they they specifically, in fact, reference the shape of a passport.

00:29:17 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:29:18 ◼   ► Which I think is interesting, because that that is about right.

00:29:22 ◼   ► The they specifically reference the feel of an iPad on the inside, even though

00:29:27 ◼   ► it's

00:29:30 ◼   ► a slightly it's not a four by three.

00:29:32 ◼   ► It's like a four point two by three.

00:29:35 ◼   ► It's it's it's close to uh and and not every iPad is is four

00:29:39 ◼   ► by three, but the original was.

00:29:40 ◼   ► Like it it is a little bit wider than a four by three.

00:29:43 ◼   ► But um But not a lot, and it's got that vibe.

00:29:46 ◼   ► I I think one of the things that's gonna be interesting and and I

00:29:50 ◼   ► think is gonna take some getting used to is it does look a little

00:29:53 ◼   ► odd, not just in that it is a very different shape for an iPhone

00:29:57 ◼   ► when it's closed, but because of the hinge when it's closed, and they they

00:30:01 ◼   ► leaned into it, they said it's asymmetric, uh, which is for them is a

00:30:05 ◼   ► big deal.

00:30:06 ◼   ► But in the pre design presentation where Molly, the designer, was talking about it,

00:30:11 ◼   ► it's asymmetric in that when it's open, it's an Apple product that you'd expect

00:30:14 ◼   ► with curved edges.

00:30:15 ◼   ► When it's closed, two of the edges, the non-binding edge, non-hinge edge, are curved.

00:30:22 ◼   ► But the internal ones are not.

00:30:24 ◼   ► They're straight.

00:30:24 ◼   ► They're right angles because.

00:30:26 ◼   ► It's a hinge and that's how hinges work and you need it to be

00:30:30 ◼   ► there when you open it up.

00:30:31 ◼   ► They you know, that's so it it's gonna feel it looks really different, it

00:30:35 ◼   ► feels really different.

00:30:36 ◼   ► I mean, people get can get used to all sorts of things, but like

00:30:39 ◼   ► it's it's fascinating that it it you can see here uh simultaneously Apple is

00:30:45 ◼   ► being driven out of its comfort zone by some of the facts of a

00:30:48 ◼   ► folding phone.

00:30:50 ◼   ► But at the same time, also Apple, you can see where Apple took its

00:30:53 ◼   ► stance and said though this is what we're gonna do that we're not gonna

00:30:57 ◼   ► compromise on and they and they you know you you get to see that.

00:31:00 ◼   ► You now I've never used a folding phone for any length of time and

00:31:03 ◼   ► you have.

00:31:03 ◼   ► So I don't know if you've got any thoughts just about the this category

00:31:07 ◼   ► and how this thing kind of fits into it.

00:31:08 ◼   ► Yeah, I mean I think I'll say like the the idea of the the

00:31:11 ◼   ► outward screen.

00:31:12 ◼   ► I've used devices that do both things.

00:31:14 ◼   ► I've used devices that do what Apple is doing, where you curve one end

00:31:18 ◼   ► and do like a sharp corner on the other.

00:31:20 ◼   ► I've used devices where they just curve all corners and you just end up

00:31:23 ◼   ► with like a weird bezel on one side.

00:31:25 ◼   ► There's like a little bump.

00:31:26 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:31:27 ◼   ► It's a decision that you can make.

00:31:28 ◼   ► I and they have made this decision.

00:31:31 ◼   ► I think by and large it's best to have the most screen you can

00:31:35 ◼   ► have, even if it's not that much more.

00:31:37 ◼   ► But and I think we're you know, they they've obviously made some changes to

00:31:40 ◼   ► iOS which seem to make the the kind of the side where the the

00:31:44 ◼   ► the rounded uh edge is is is kind of like less information and more

00:31:48 ◼   ► access for things.

00:31:49 ◼   ► I wonder if there's a left-handed mode for this font.

00:31:52 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:31:52 ◼   ► So so we will see, and I'm sure somebody's asking of course we're we're

00:31:57 ◼   ► doing this right after, but they made a point of saying in the video

00:32:01 ◼   ► that it's usable in all orientations.

00:32:04 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:32:05 ◼   ► And I read that to be as somebody who is right-handed but holds my

00:32:09 ◼   ► phone in my left hand,

00:32:12 ◼   ► putting all of the controls on the far right side as they've done with

00:32:15 ◼   ► the software it doesn't work for me.

00:32:18 ◼   ► No.

00:32:18 ◼   ► But I kind of assume that if I flip the phone over,

00:32:23 ◼   ► it will all flip over and the sidebar would be on the other side.

00:32:27 ◼   ► Because you would unfold it and then you'd have to flip it back over

00:32:29 ◼   ► again.

00:32:29 ◼   ► Which is not terrible but like it's a an odd um it would be

00:32:34 ◼   ► an odd well way to use it.

00:32:36 ◼   ► If it's all orientations, then you would open it that way.

00:32:41 ◼   ► You would just open it.

00:32:42 ◼   ► From the other direction and it would be in that orientation, right?

00:32:46 ◼   ► I mean I think that's the idea here.

00:32:47 ◼   ► If you had it turned around, so the phone is upside down, right?

00:32:52 ◼   ► So that the then the controls are on the left side.

00:32:55 ◼   ► Yes.

00:32:56 ◼   ► When you open it, you're looking at the back of the phone.

00:32:59 ◼   ► You'd then have to turn it back around again.

00:33:02 ◼   ► At no you bring you bring the you bring the front part forward, no

00:33:06 ◼   ► matter what.

00:33:07 ◼   ► Oh yeah.

00:33:08 ◼   ► Yeah, you're opening a book backwards.

00:33:10 ◼   ► Yeah, no.

00:33:10 ◼   ► I get it.

00:33:11 ◼   ► Yeah, I know yeah, yeah, and I you're yeah, and that's it.

00:33:13 ◼   ► You're opening it.

00:33:16 ◼   ► I think what they imply is that it doesn't matter.

00:33:20 ◼   ► Now my brain has come around to to to to accurate physics, uh I

00:33:24 ◼   ► agree with you.

00:33:24 ◼   ► And that would be nice actually.

00:33:26 ◼   ► And it and like an iPad, right?

00:33:27 ◼   ► iPads they they respect all orientations and they're Exactly and the iPhone has been

00:33:32 ◼   ► very much not that kind of a device where it's sort of like it's

00:33:36 ◼   ► either up or it's on its side and that's about it.

00:33:38 ◼   ► And with the iPhone Duo, a name that we have to lodge in our

00:33:42 ◼   ► brands now, they're saying free rotation.

00:33:47 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:33:47 ◼   ► Like do you know it it and and we should say the implications of

00:33:52 ◼   ► this are greater than just what we assume is if you want to hold

00:33:56 ◼   ► it this direction or that direction, it'll work.

00:33:59 ◼   ► It's also they showed it when it's open, you can obviously do it in

00:34:04 ◼   ► any orientation.

00:34:05 ◼   ► And then there are more orientations than just that because there is there there

00:34:11 ◼   ► is um laying it down like a tent so it's got standby on the

00:34:16 ◼   ► front or laying it down on its narrow side slightly open so it's got

00:34:21 ◼   ► two slightly open internal display faces showing.

00:34:24 ◼   ► Which you can also use standby on that.

00:34:27 ◼   ► Like on the inside.

00:34:29 ◼   ► Or laying it flat like a laptop also works.

00:34:33 ◼   ► So there's lots of different like they they showed that in the little tent

00:34:37 ◼   ► configuration, not only does it show you your standby widgets on the front, but

00:34:40 ◼   ► it'll do like a little glow effect on the inside screen so you get

00:34:44 ◼   ► this kind of like glow in the background.

00:34:45 ◼   ► While we're talking about this, how sick is that opening animation?

00:34:49 ◼   ► Where it looks like you're looking through the phone

00:34:54 ◼   ► to the other phone.

00:34:55 ◼   ► Gasped when they opened that phone.

00:34:57 ◼   ► That's the most Apple thing that you could possibly imagine.

00:35:00 ◼   ► And and I'm reminded that the the code spelunkers were saying how, you know,

00:35:04 ◼   ► it's measuring specific degree of angle of the hinge.

00:35:08 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:08 ◼   ► And this is why, right?

00:35:10 ◼   ► It's because Apple wants to know exactly so that it can have this illusion

00:35:14 ◼   ► that as you open the phone or close the phone, there's this illusion of

00:35:19 ◼   ► continuity between the the internal and external display.

00:35:24 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:24 ◼   ► It's it is like you know, I other phone manufacturers have done some kind

00:35:29 ◼   ► of like animated wallpaper, right?

00:35:31 ◼   ► Where like when you open it, you know, like a butterfly on the front

00:35:34 ◼   ► and you open it and then inside the butterfly's flapping its wings or whatever.

00:35:37 ◼   ► This is like Ye like years ahead, right?

00:35:40 ◼   ► Like and this is just because this is the stuff Apple really super cares

00:35:43 ◼   ► about.

00:35:43 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:43 ◼   ► Right?

00:35:44 ◼   ► Like this is the stuff that they are very, very focused on.

00:35:47 ◼   ► They're gonna sweat.

00:35:47 ◼   ► And the decent thing is they have absolutely done done the job.

00:35:50 ◼   ► Well yeah, anytime you do a product like this, you you could probably write

00:35:53 ◼   ► up on a whiteboard like eighty things that are gonna have to be decided

00:35:56 ◼   ► about how this is gonna work.

00:35:57 ◼   ► Because the ramifications of having two surfaces and like what happens when you go

00:36:02 ◼   ► from surface one to surface two.

00:36:04 ◼   ► And they had to deal with it.

00:36:05 ◼   ► This is It it's actually kind of funny.

00:36:07 ◼   ► Um, when you think about it, like this is a major set of features

00:36:11 ◼   ► for iOS twenty-seven, right?

00:36:14 ◼   ► Like it's actually kind of huge because they have to implement things that have

00:36:18 ◼   ► just not been implemented on iOS.

00:36:19 ◼   ► And some of the things they can pick up from the iPad, but there's

00:36:22 ◼   ► a lot of stuff that's just there is no precedent for this stuff and

00:36:25 ◼   ► they just gotta figure it out.

00:36:26 ◼   ► And it and again, not ideally not punt on it, but say,

00:36:31 ◼   ► Okay, let's make it really good.

00:36:33 ◼   ► How do we do that?

00:36:33 ◼   ► What's a what's a good like cause you could totally open it up and

00:36:37 ◼   ► then like the the then the screen pops up as I d you know

00:36:40 ◼   ► from the front.

00:36:41 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:36:41 ◼   ► And you're like, okay, that one went off and this one went on.

00:36:44 ◼   ► And they're like, you know, not they're not gonna do that.

00:36:46 ◼   ► They're gonna drive both display displays and they're gonna have them work together and

00:36:49 ◼   ► the both displays will run.

00:36:50 ◼   ► The other thing is both displays will run at different times.

00:36:53 ◼   ► So they're like you could do selfies, which allowed them to create like a

00:36:56 ◼   ► selfie mode.

00:36:57 ◼   ► Um you could do like FaceTimes where you can have both cameras inside and

00:37:01 ◼   ► outside going of both screens inside and outside going.

00:37:04 ◼   ► Or the kit kid mode when you're asking a kid.

00:37:06 ◼   ► I pulled it.

00:37:07 ◼   ► I'm so happy they stole it.

00:37:08 ◼   ► They like got Snoopy animeing on the front screen.

00:37:10 ◼   ► It's like oh so happy that they added that.

00:37:14 ◼   ► So so that that is there's a lot of ramifications once you've got two

00:37:17 ◼   ► displays and sensors on uh the inside and the outside or either side of

00:37:22 ◼   ► a of an open phone and like there's just a it's wild.

00:37:25 ◼   ► There's a lot going on here.

00:37:26 ◼   ► This is the thing, like there is there's no world in which we will

00:37:29 ◼   ► touch on all of these things today.

00:37:31 ◼   ► I mean, especially because m w we won't really be able to until we've

00:37:35 ◼   ► used one, which is unfortunately quite a way away.

00:37:37 ◼   ► But I'm just so happy about how hard they have gone with iOS

00:37:43 ◼   ► to make iOS really work with the hardware, right?

00:37:49 ◼   ► That you've got just new stuff going on.

00:37:51 ◼   ► There was an easy way to do this and there was a complicated way

00:37:55 ◼   ► to do this.

00:37:55 ◼   ► And I think they have taken the complicated path where it's saying there are

00:38:00 ◼   ► so many components here that you've seen maybe in different places with the iPhone.

00:38:04 ◼   ► Right.

00:38:04 ◼   ► So things like standby and stuff like that.

00:38:07 ◼   ► But we're we're just giving you a bunch of things that you can try

00:38:11 ◼   ► out now.

00:38:12 ◼   ► Like an and and I'm very, very excited to be able to

00:38:18 ◼   ► experience this, right?

00:38:20 ◼   ► Like even the split screen, right?

00:38:21 ◼   ► So you can do a split screen, you could do one half of each

00:38:25 ◼   ► uh uh app.

00:38:26 ◼   ► I think you could do a bit of it free resizing, but it will

00:38:29 ◼   ► it can do some snapping as well.

00:38:30 ◼   ► You can pair apps together, which is a thing we never have gotten on

00:38:34 ◼   ► iPad OS.

00:38:35 ◼   ► There is also like a portrait split screen where it takes up different um

00:38:40 ◼   ► sizes of the 'cause people are gonna say I think you could actually there

00:38:44 ◼   ► was a period where you could pair your apps together and in in the

00:38:47 ◼   ► old multitasking.

00:38:48 ◼   ► It was like a late stage iPad multitasking thing where you could pair apps

00:38:51 ◼   ► together.

00:38:51 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:38:52 ◼   ► You could make like a permanent pair?

00:38:54 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:38:55 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:38:56 ◼   ► Okay.

00:38:56 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:38:56 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:38:57 ◼   ► I have a vague memory of that.

00:38:59 ◼   ► I I think I think the larger issue here too for iOS is Um

00:39:05 ◼   ► this is a bespoke implementation for the iPhone Duo, but make no mistake, a

00:39:12 ◼   ► bunch of these features will end up in iOS 28.

00:39:16 ◼   ► Right?

00:39:17 ◼   ► Like I I some of this stuff is a real trial where they'll be

00:39:21 ◼   ► like, Oh, this is a better UI element.

00:39:23 ◼   ► We should just put this in twenty

00:39:26 ◼   ► the the little combined status bar thing.

00:39:29 ◼   ► Exactly.

00:39:29 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:39:29 ◼   ► Exactly.

00:39:30 ◼   ► That's a new I mean that feels that the moment I saw it, I

00:39:33 ◼   ► thought that feels like something that's not gonna just live on this phone forever.

00:39:36 ◼   ► Right the the the the tap to reveal status bar thing.

00:39:39 ◼   ► It just doesn't Yeah, for sure.

00:39:42 ◼   ► And some of the other the widgets and the customizability and all that, it

00:39:45 ◼   ► feels like a lot of that stuff is is, you know, they build it

00:39:48 ◼   ► for this and then they're like, well, this is great.

00:39:49 ◼   ► Why would we not use this on all our iPhones?

00:39:51 ◼   ► And then they build it for everything else too.

00:39:53 ◼   ► Camera story is kind of what we expected.

00:39:56 ◼   ► You know, you've got the two cameras on the outside the the fusion main

00:40:00 ◼   ► camera, which has the two times telephoto, the ultra-wide, twelve twelve uh megapixel center

00:40:06 ◼   ► stage front camera, but then I think the unexpected part, an underscreen FaceTime camera

00:40:10 ◼   ► on the inside.

00:40:12 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:40:13 ◼   ► Bold.

00:40:15 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:40:16 ◼   ► It so it looks like and they didn't shy away from it, it sure

00:40:20 ◼   ► looks like you can see it.

00:40:21 ◼   ► So it it it it's still there, but it's not a punch out.

00:40:24 ◼   ► There are some pixels there, but you can still tell that that's the camera

00:40:27 ◼   ► area, but it doesn't wipe it out.

00:40:30 ◼   ► And then when it's taking a picture, those pixels go off and then you've

00:40:33 ◼   ► got a camera space there and it looks like a camera cut out.

00:40:37 ◼   ► But it is the first time that they've tried to do something like this.

00:40:39 ◼   ► Because it's interesting.

00:40:40 ◼   ► Some some of uh Apple's competitors here went down this road and then backed

00:40:45 ◼   ► off.

00:40:45 ◼   ► And so it seemed like the age of the underscreen camera was dead.

00:40:49 ◼   ► Um but I'm very intrigued that they are doing this.

00:40:53 ◼   ► Uh I I find it interesting that they are just calling it under display

00:40:58 ◼   ► FaceTime camera, which tells me it's not a great camera, but for a FaceTime

00:41:02 ◼   ► call, sure.

00:41:03 ◼   ► Totally fine, right?

00:41:05 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:41:05 ◼   ► Exactly.

00:41:06 ◼   ► It's like, yeah what do you want?

00:41:07 ◼   ► This is the best we could do here.

00:41:09 ◼   ► And then they added a bunch of um, you know, we mentioned it or

00:41:12 ◼   ► a couple of these things already, but like even uh smart take where you

00:41:16 ◼   ► can, you know, everybody poses and and it will take the image uh for

00:41:19 ◼   ► you, right?

00:41:19 ◼   ► That kind of thing.

00:41:20 ◼   ► They've added a bunch of stuff.

00:41:22 ◼   ► Implications of once you've got a phone that can stand itself at an angle

00:41:25 ◼   ► and you can see it and all of those things, you've got to do

00:41:28 ◼   ► something like this.

00:41:29 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:41:30 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:41:30 ◼   ► I mean

00:41:32 ◼   ► the hardware you know, they s they focused a lot on this.

00:41:35 ◼   ► This is one of the I think the I think the rarer times where

00:41:39 ◼   ► Apple talks about a bunch of things which you could say would be wrong

00:41:45 ◼   ► with a product like this in a way to try and talk about why

00:41:48 ◼   ► theirs is good, right?

00:41:50 ◼   ► They spoke about distracting creases.

00:41:52 ◼   ► They spent a lot of time focusing on durability because it is expected that

00:41:56 ◼   ► these devices are less durable.

00:41:58 ◼   ► Um there there was a lot of focus on that you know, talking about

00:42:02 ◼   ► how the uh how the whole frame is reinforced and different areas are reinforced

00:42:07 ◼   ► in the frame.

00:42:08 ◼   ► Eight layers that slide separately and we then we th we we three D

00:42:13 ◼   ► print a custom layer based on a scan of the actual device as it's

00:42:19 ◼   ► being built.

00:42:20 ◼   ► That detail to me was fascinating.

00:42:21 ◼   ► So there is a I don't remember which phone this was.

00:42:24 ◼   ► I think it was an Oppo phone that did this.

00:42:26 ◼   ► They they had a phone maybe last year that did this.

00:42:29 ◼   ► And when I heard about that technology, I was like, that feels like a

00:42:33 ◼   ► very Apple y thing to do.

00:42:34 ◼   ► And and it was one of these things where I wondered if I was

00:42:37 ◼   ► reading um uh Apple in China at the time and I was wondering is

00:42:41 ◼   ► this one of these technologies that Apple's been working on and then somebody else

00:42:44 ◼   ► also started using it because now it exists?

00:42:46 ◼   ► I mean it could be might not be the case.

00:42:48 ◼   ► Could be.

00:42:49 ◼   ► But it felt to me very much like a thing Apple would do.

00:42:52 ◼   ► They used to do a few things, right?

00:42:53 ◼   ► They use AI models to match hinges and housings that fit they think will

00:42:57 ◼   ► fit best together.

00:42:58 ◼   ► And then there's a bunch of 3D component printing that is going on to

00:43:03 ◼   ► make sure everything fits as well as possible to eliminate a crease as much

00:43:08 ◼   ► as they can.

00:43:09 ◼   ► I mean, this is what you want to hear in a device like this,

00:43:12 ◼   ► as well as like I think the the you know they they they they

00:43:16 ◼   ► talk about the durability of the screens and then the confidence of this thing's

00:43:20 ◼   ► gonna have Apple Pencil inside and outside.

00:43:22 ◼   ► It's like all right.

00:43:24 ◼   ► This is um there's a there's a level of this that is what took

00:43:27 ◼   ► you so long because these folding phones have been out for a while.

00:43:29 ◼   ► And so what they're doing is they're not just boasting about their their technological

00:43:33 ◼   ► prowess, but they're also answering the question, What took them so long?

00:43:36 ◼   ► And and the you know, the in the end, it allows them to m

00:43:39 ◼   ► send the message which is, Well, there really couldn't have been a folding iPhone

00:43:43 ◼   ► before now because our standards are so high.

00:43:45 ◼   ► And you know, that's a I get it, that's a marketing mess.

00:43:47 ◼   ► But there's also truth to that.

00:43:49 ◼   ► Like in in in reality, why is this a year that the folding phone

00:43:53 ◼   ► is happening?

00:43:54 ◼   ► Why is the why is the iPhone Duo coming out next month?

00:43:57 ◼   ► And the answer is they got to the point where they felt they could

00:44:00 ◼   ► ship a product in at least some volume how much volume TBD, but at

00:44:06 ◼   ► least some volume

00:44:08 ◼   ► that they felt was up to their standards.

00:44:11 ◼   ► And that includes coming up with all of these

00:44:15 ◼   ► new techniques new to Apple, certainly, in order to get the manufacturing to get

00:44:21 ◼   ► to the point where it reaches that that quality.

00:44:23 ◼   ► Oh, and it's nanotexture finish.

00:44:25 ◼   ► Oh, you kidding me?

00:44:26 ◼   ► M that's that's gonna look so good.

00:44:29 ◼   ► Like for for reading and stuff, like it's gonna be I think that that

00:44:33 ◼   ► this inside screen is gonna be really, really nice.

00:44:36 ◼   ► Oh, it does have a dynamic island still on the inside screen, which is

00:44:39 ◼   ► funny.

00:44:40 ◼   ► Right?

00:44:40 ◼   ► Like it will pop up when it's needed, but then otherwise they'll just be

00:44:43 ◼   ► be not mean nothing there, I guess, which is uh I still find that

00:44:46 ◼   ► funny.

00:44:47 ◼   ► You mentioned Apple Pencil.

00:44:48 ◼   ► I wanna I mean we've been talking for a long time about w would

00:44:50 ◼   ► they p take Apple Pencil and put it on a big iPhone or something

00:44:53 ◼   ► like that.

00:44:54 ◼   ► And and they held it for this, but the USB C Apple Pencil so

00:44:59 ◼   ► the one that doesn't do the magnetic charging because there's nowhere to do that

00:45:02 ◼   ► on this device, that will work.

00:45:05 ◼   ► It's very funny, right?

00:45:06 ◼   ► It's like later this year with a software update, it will work, which is

00:45:11 ◼   ► like it's just not they're not promising that it'll work out of the box,

00:45:14 ◼   ► but that they will enable it.

00:45:16 ◼   ► And um that's great because that uh it's another way that this becomes uh

00:45:21 ◼   ► if not an iPad, it picks up more of Apple's advantages for having built

00:45:27 ◼   ► the iPad in a device like that.

00:45:29 ◼   ► It's another selling point for this device where someone may want what is comparison

00:45:34 ◼   ► shopping and they're like, Oh, I could take notes on this.

00:45:37 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:45:37 ◼   ► Like it's just like another thing where it's someone's gonna be like, Oh yeah.

00:45:40 ◼   ► Flip it vertically, get out your pencil and um and start writing.

00:45:44 ◼   ► Touch ID.

00:45:45 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:45:46 ◼   ► I mean the way

00:45:49 ◼   ► touch ID and watch unlock.

00:45:50 ◼   ► They put those together.

00:45:51 ◼   ► You can also if you have an Apple watch you just watch unlock.

00:45:53 ◼   ► What is the most secure way to open this device?

00:45:56 ◼   ► Like, there are other ways, Joss.

00:45:57 ◼   ► Like we know of one of them.

00:45:59 ◼   ► Like there's another way.

00:46:00 ◼   ► Like I understand what you're trying to do, but don't try to sell it

00:46:03 ◼   ► like a like it's like oh you can do multiple things.

00:46:06 ◼   ► It's like, oh really can you do that with touch ID jaws?

00:46:09 ◼   ► Oh man, I didn't know.

00:46:10 ◼   ► Uh it is what it's gonna be.

00:46:12 ◼   ► Look but there is mag safe charging, so like we didn't lose I didn't

00:46:16 ◼   ► mention it, but there's

00:46:19 ◼   ► not just even chi charging, it's MagSafe charging.

00:46:21 ◼   ► So it's there.

00:46:22 ◼   ► I I saw several people responded when I found that and said they probably

00:46:25 ◼   ► didn't put in the video because it looks weird.

00:46:28 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:46:29 ◼   ► It probably does.

00:46:30 ◼   ► I just don't let's not talk about it.

00:46:32 ◼   ► Let's not show it.

00:46:33 ◼   ► But it's there.

00:46:34 ◼   ► It's there.

00:46:34 ◼   ► And also they wanted to boast this was the this all of the phones

00:46:38 ◼   ► got this charging fast charging update.

00:46:41 ◼   ► And they wanted to boast about how fast their charging is.

00:46:43 ◼   ► So that's Um that's what they did.

00:46:46 ◼   ► And they said this thing's got two batteries in it, obviously.

00:46:49 ◼   ► Two batteries that work together.

00:46:50 ◼   ► It will get all day battery, which I'm now saying 24 hours on a

00:46:54 ◼   ► charge with a new battery benchmark model, which they're calling real usage model, which

00:46:59 ◼   ► thank you, Apple, for doing our our friends our friends in the performance marketing

00:47:03 ◼   ► group at Apple have been hard at work trying to come up with a

00:47:06 ◼   ► test that kind of models how people actually use their devices.

00:47:10 ◼   ► Which is good because playing a video for forty eight hours is not how

00:47:13 ◼   ► people use their devices.

00:47:15 ◼   ► So um the idea would be you to

00:47:18 ◼   ► I mean it's how I d it's what I do all the time.

00:47:23 ◼   ► I just turn on a live stream of that um of that like water

00:47:26 ◼   ► hole in Africa where the hippos are.

00:47:28 ◼   ► Well Jason, if you were live streaming it's only thirty seven hours rather than

00:47:32 ◼   ► forty four.

00:47:33 ◼   ► You're right, you're right, you're right.

00:47:35 ◼   ► You know this as someone who does this, you know this.

00:47:38 ◼   ► The so it is uh so they they seem to have built without any

00:47:43 ◼   ► detail of course, but they'll they'll they'll disclose some details probably.

00:47:46 ◼   ► A model that's based on uh essentially real world usage stats about how long

00:47:52 ◼   ► a normal average day with an iPhone stresses when's the when's the screen often

00:47:57 ◼   ► on, you know, how often is it used?

00:47:59 ◼   ► How much is it hitting?

00:48:01 ◼   ► Would you like me to be very boring and read to you from the

00:48:04 ◼   ► the footnote about this test?

00:48:07 ◼   ► Bore me man, bore me.

00:48:08 ◼   ► The profile is based on the median usage values across iPhone users and reflects

00:48:13 ◼   ► a combination of passive and active use and a variety of applications, including but

00:48:18 ◼   ► not limited to messaging, photos, music social media, video streaming, games, web browsing, and

00:48:24 ◼   ► navigation.

00:48:25 ◼   ► Yep.

00:48:25 ◼   ► That's what it says.

00:48:26 ◼   ► Sounds yeah.

00:48:27 ◼   ► Well, I mean, the purpose look, obviously Apple wants to impress you with their

00:48:31 ◼   ► number, but they also want to impress you with their improvement over the previous

00:48:35 ◼   ► year.

00:48:35 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:48:36 ◼   ► So by creating this test, it allows them um so I guess they're not

00:48:41 ◼   ► super motivated to make it uh entirely fake.

00:48:45 ◼   ► Uh but at the same time.

00:48:47 ◼   ► I'm sure everybody else, you know, i it's not gonna make them look bad.

00:48:51 ◼   ► Let's just put it that way.

00:48:52 ◼   ► But I'm I if they're gonna quote a number, I would rather have a

00:48:54 ◼   ► number that is at least plausibly based on real world usage.

00:48:57 ◼   ► So thank you, Apple, indeed, for that.

00:48:59 ◼   ► But yeah, twenty four hours per charge when using both screens equally.

00:49:04 ◼   ► Uh not not bad.

00:49:06 ◼   ► Not bad.

00:49:07 ◼   ► Talking about hardware quirks and stuff.

00:49:09 ◼   ► No action button.

00:49:10 ◼   ► RIP.

00:49:11 ◼   ► I guess no camera control.

00:49:12 ◼   ► I haven't, but it there's no action button.

00:49:15 ◼   ► I I would assume you know.

00:49:16 ◼   ► Yeah it's funny we're not even talking about the buttons here.

00:49:19 ◼   ► I also wanted to talk about the displays and how they're just, you know,

00:49:22 ◼   ► not branded or anything.

00:49:23 ◼   ► The Johnny Scrugie segment, I it has camera control.

00:49:26 ◼   ► It has camera control but it's not a good thing.

00:49:29 ◼   ► What are we doing?

00:49:30 ◼   ► That's the wrong one.

00:49:30 ◼   ► That's the wrong button.

00:49:32 ◼   ► Um The Johnny Shroogee

00:49:35 ◼   ► is now the chief hardware officer.

00:49:37 ◼   ► Yep.

00:49:38 ◼   ► And so he comes out in this video and the first thing he does

00:49:40 ◼   ► is he talks about displays, which is amazing because he's the chip guy.

00:49:44 ◼   ► And that's a moment where it's like, Yeah, not anymore.

00:49:47 ◼   ► G hardware also.

00:49:48 ◼   ► Good point.

00:49:49 ◼   ► So he's gonna talk about that display that's new for him where he's talking

00:49:53 ◼   ► about oh, our display and a nanotexter finish and all that.

00:49:56 ◼   ► That's not a Johnny Sruoggy thing, except now it is a Johnny Shro Sruji

00:50:00 ◼   ► thing.

00:50:01 ◼   ► So he did that.

00:50:02 ◼   ► Yeah, that's a that's I didn't it didn't I'm very used to him giving

00:50:07 ◼   ► me lots of very intense detail that I didn't think that it was not

00:50:11 ◼   ► about chips.

00:50:12 ◼   ► Some other notes.

00:50:13 ◼   ► Um C two.

00:50:14 ◼   ► So it's ESIM only.

00:50:16 ◼   ► It uses the C two.

00:50:17 ◼   ► We have the new C two chip.

00:50:18 ◼   ► This is this is second generation Apple modem chip.

00:50:21 ◼   ► So this is e sim only worldwide, which I think the air was as

00:50:26 ◼   ► well, right?

00:50:27 ◼   ► So that was the Yeah, but not like for yeah, again, not the not

00:50:30 ◼   ► the pro because there's some markets where they just can't do that.

00:50:32 ◼   ► Uh millimeter wave support in the US?

00:50:35 ◼   ► Which I think is a new for the C It is, yeah.

00:50:39 ◼   ► Um

00:50:40 ◼   ► and you know, they boast a little Johnny boasts a little bit about because

00:50:44 ◼   ► it's all integrated together, there's all sorts of stuff we can do and we

00:50:46 ◼   ► can make our connections better and all of those things.

00:50:48 ◼   ► Yeah, analyze the connections and all that.

00:50:50 ◼   ► But again, it's it's all in on the C two.

00:50:52 ◼   ► It's like it's like there's a next generation Apple phone.

00:50:56 ◼   ► Every next generation Apple phone just goes to the C two.

00:50:58 ◼   ► It's the ones where you're like, there's markets where we really need to sell

00:51:01 ◼   ► the iPhone Pro and they're they're going to be resistant to eSIM only.

00:51:05 ◼   ► So for those markets, we'll make it available.

00:51:07 ◼   ► Um and that I that is I assume from that that either the iPhone

00:51:11 ◼   ► Pro, I mean, did they say, I mean, I assume it's just got a

00:51:15 ◼   ► Qualcomm modem in it, or you know.

00:51:17 ◼   ► Although there's a rumor that like some markets, maybe the ESIM only model is

00:51:23 ◼   ► a C2 and the E S and the with SIM slot is a Qualcomm.

00:51:27 ◼   ► I guess we'll have to find out when we get there.

00:51:29 ◼   ► Um anyway, it's it's uh it's

00:51:32 ◼   ► A very impressive piece of hardware and then in true Apple

00:51:37 ◼   ► style,

00:51:39 ◼   ► it is the story of the hardware and the software working together right.

00:51:42 ◼   ► Craig Federigi appears in a phone launch because he needs to explain that they

00:51:47 ◼   ► did a load of software things because once you have this kind of a

00:51:51 ◼   ► device, you can't just punt the software.

00:51:54 ◼   ► You have to build a bunch of bespoke software to go with the hardware

00:51:58 ◼   ► for it to make sense.

00:51:59 ◼   ► So like the split view um second window.

00:52:03 ◼   ► They they use the example of having two Safari windows open.

00:52:06 ◼   ► Yes, that's a very good, very good use case.

00:52:09 ◼   ► Um, you know, easy ways to swap apps, tap the divider to lock those

00:52:13 ◼   ► two apps together, which is really smart.

00:52:15 ◼   ► Really smart.

00:52:16 ◼   ► Um I just, yeah, a lot of like I can't wait.

00:52:19 ◼   ► Oh, all the way.

00:52:20 ◼   ► Also, um always useful to find out what apps get mentioned.

00:52:25 ◼   ► I like that Flighty was a was a uh a live activity mention, but

00:52:30 ◼   ► I wanna notice that um a lot of their m apps that they mention,

00:52:34 ◼   ► like Zoom and Slack, I mean it's kinda like the iPad, but on an

00:52:39 ◼   ► iPhone.

00:52:40 ◼   ► But But still it's good.

00:52:41 ◼   ► It's it's companies that are working on adopting uh the new API.

00:52:45 ◼   ► And also recognizing that this device is probably going to be used by a

00:52:49 ◼   ► lot of people that want something to get their work done.

00:52:52 ◼   ► Exactly.

00:52:53 ◼   ► Yeah, so Zoom and and then and Slack and and the detail m mention

00:52:58 ◼   ► was fun, but I just again you noticed it, I'm sure.

00:53:02 ◼   ► Prominent mention of Netflix.

00:53:06 ◼   ► Yes, I did notice this.

00:53:08 ◼   ► And also promoting a feature of Netflix that nobody uses.

00:53:12 ◼   ► Nobody cares.

00:53:13 ◼   ► Which is their shorts feature, which is extra fascinating because that is the benefit

00:53:19 ◼   ► that Netflix get from this.

00:53:22 ◼   ► And that was John that was uh what?

00:53:25 ◼   ► John was that John Turnus?

00:53:28 ◼   ► I think it was.

00:53:28 ◼   ► Yeah, I think that was Turnus talking about.

00:53:30 ◼   ► I don't know.

00:53:31 ◼   ► I had a moment where I where I leaned forward a little bit, or

00:53:33 ◼   ► maybe it was Craig, but like I leaned forward a little bit and thought

00:53:37 ◼   ► to myself, hm.

00:53:39 ◼   ► Like, I mean, Apple and Netflix are not a not like openly warring.

00:53:44 ◼   ► They have their moments where they're the where they work together and the moments

00:53:48 ◼   ► when they don't.

00:53:48 ◼   ► But I I did I it just makes me wonder if maybe the the

00:53:53 ◼   ► relationship with Netflix is thawing.

00:53:55 ◼   ► I mean, I think it's probably been a really long time since they got

00:54:00 ◼   ► mentioned in a keynote.

00:54:01 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:54:02 ◼   ► Right.

00:54:02 ◼   ► Prominent mentions of Netflix.

00:54:04 ◼   ► And they showed later they show a Netflix video playing, I think it's a

00:54:08 ◼   ► Netflix video.

00:54:09 ◼   ► Maybe, maybe it's Apple TV, with video controls on the bottom with it's when

00:54:12 ◼   ► it's folded into that like laptop like configuration.

00:54:15 ◼   ► Um anyway, so just they they they showed off the Netflix stuff that nobody

00:54:20 ◼   ► uses, but they're doing a solid for Netflix there basically.

00:54:23 ◼   ► So one thing that interesting I'd be intrigued in, and I didn't seen a

00:54:27 ◼   ► lot on the website, and I don't remember it from the keynote, is like

00:54:31 ◼   ► how the keyboard works.

00:54:32 ◼   ► I know I saw like landscape all the way, landscape split, but I wonder

00:54:36 ◼   ► if you can do like one side, you know, like I would like one

00:54:39 ◼   ► sided swipe typing or whatever, you know, like I have on the iPad.

00:54:42 ◼   ► But we'll find later on.

00:54:45 ◼   ► But I don't know.

00:54:45 ◼   ► 'Cause I don't I would I don't wanna be typing two handed with this

00:54:49 ◼   ► thing all the time, I don't think.

00:54:50 ◼   ► Like it I don't I don't I don't do that on an iPad.

00:54:53 ◼   ► Like I I do like swipe typing with the little floaty keyboard.

00:54:56 ◼   ► I hope that they they have that in there.

00:54:58 ◼   ► I mean, look, the iPhone Duo is such a huge product.

00:55:02 ◼   ► We're gonna be talking about it for weeks.

00:55:04 ◼   ► Uh oh the price, I guess it is.

00:55:06 ◼   ► Yeah, I know.

00:55:07 ◼   ► It doesn't come out.

00:55:08 ◼   ► It's pre order on twenty third sixteenth, released on October twenty third.

00:55:12 ◼   ► I personally am really happy about this because as a person who produces a

00:55:18 ◼   ► weekly show about Apple News, splitting these releases by a significant period of time

00:55:24 ◼   ► is great because we'll focus on the pro phones, then we will focus on

00:55:29 ◼   ► the duo.

00:55:30 ◼   ► Like I'm I'm I'm pleased about that, that we're not gonna have this clash,

00:55:34 ◼   ► right?

00:55:34 ◼   ► That we're gonna have to try and review all these phones in the same

00:55:37 ◼   ► episode would just

00:55:39 ◼   ► Yeah, but it is six weeks of waiting for all of us.

00:55:42 ◼   ► And starting at nineteen ninety-nine, they did it.

00:55:45 ◼   ► They got it under two grand.

00:55:47 ◼   ► Yep.

00:55:47 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:55:48 ◼   ► I saw Mark German broke this last night and um I saw a bit

00:55:52 ◼   ► of analysis that suggested they're probably eating more on the margin than they wanted,

00:55:57 ◼   ► but I think this is the this is the price that they wanted to

00:56:01 ◼   ► sell this at.

00:56:02 ◼   ► And I know I've uh a lot of other people are like, oh my

00:56:04 ◼   ► God, a two thousand dollar phone.

00:56:05 ◼   ► This is ridiculous.

00:56:06 ◼   ► And like yeah.

00:56:07 ◼   ► I mean, it was always gonna be a two thousand dollar phone.

00:56:09 ◼   ► It was all it was always gonna be a two thousand dollar phone, I

00:56:11 ◼   ► think.

00:56:12 ◼   ► I think that it's still a two thousand dollar phone.

00:56:14 ◼   ► I was asked this question earlier today.

00:56:16 ◼   ► I did an interview right before we started.

00:56:18 ◼   ► And you can say it was an MPR.

00:56:20 ◼   ► You should say it's MPR.

00:56:21 ◼   ► It's impressive.

00:56:22 ◼   ► You say you were on MPR today.

00:56:23 ◼   ► It's fun.

00:56:23 ◼   ► I I mean uh but I wasn't.

00:56:25 ◼   ► Maybe they'll use some of my clips uh somewhere.

00:56:27 ◼   ► And then and then it's very funny, by the way, when you're an MPR,

00:56:30 ◼   ► people who only people come out of the woodwork are like, Oh, I heard

00:56:35 ◼   ► you on NPR.

00:56:35 ◼   ► And I'm like, Ah, that's one of my NPR listeners out there that that

00:56:38 ◼   ► is just perked up when they heard my my voice.

00:56:40 ◼   ► It's funny.

00:56:41 ◼   ► Anyway, he said, Is this an unexpected price?

00:56:44 ◼   ► And my answer was,

00:56:46 ◼   ► six months ago, no.

00:56:48 ◼   ► Today, yes, because we all kind of expect everything is more expensive.

00:56:52 ◼   ► And I think they really, really, really and I know it's psychological, but like

00:56:56 ◼   ► having it not start at two thousand something.

00:57:00 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:57:00 ◼   ► It yeah is important to Apple.

00:57:02 ◼   ► They don't that number is a one at the beginning.

00:57:05 ◼   ► Yeah the number starts with one.

00:57:07 ◼   ► It's the last one that's available before you get to two, but it starts

00:57:10 ◼   ► with a one.

00:57:11 ◼   ► Of course, you can go to two terabytes and then pay more than three

00:57:15 ◼   ► grand for it.

00:57:15 ◼   ► But you know, still less than a Vision Pro though.

00:57:17 ◼   ► You know Still less than a Vision Pro.

00:57:20 ◼   ► But like a dollar or like maybe it's the same price actually.

00:57:24 ◼   ► Um but hey Jason, let me tell you you can lease that two terabyte

00:57:27 ◼   ► for just ninety-two dollars and eighty one cents a month for twenty four months.

00:57:31 ◼   ► Aren't we surprised uh even a little bit about the fact that the the

00:57:36 ◼   ► uh all of these phones were also mentioned as having lovely low, low lease

00:57:42 ◼   ► price.

00:57:42 ◼   ► And trade ins, trade ins, trade ins will get you into a trade in

00:57:46 ◼   ► today.

00:57:46 ◼   ► I I felt like uh being back on an analyst call because that's always

00:57:50 ◼   ► what they say on the on the earnings calls is look,

00:57:54 ◼   ► this is why we do we do trade-ins.

00:57:56 ◼   ► We do we do financing because we want the the iPhones must flow.

00:58:01 ◼   ► We will find ways to to reach people and make them affordable and their

00:58:05 ◼   ► carrier deals, trade-ins, you know.

00:58:09 ◼   ► And and uh now they've got the the m the lease option.

00:58:14 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:58:14 ◼   ► It will be interesting to see as well what are the deals the carriers

00:58:18 ◼   ► are gonna offer for this phone.

00:58:19 ◼   ► 'Cause it's very expensive.

00:58:21 ◼   ► But they they're gonna wanna offer deals.

00:58:22 ◼   ► I I don't think they're gonna be giving it away but they will wanna

00:58:25 ◼   ► deals as well.

00:58:26 ◼   ► So there there there are ways, but they have to emphasize it because it's

00:58:29 ◼   ► expensive.

00:58:30 ◼   ► Is a a price you can get to very easily over an eighteen pro

00:58:34 ◼   ► max.

00:58:34 ◼   ► Like it's true.

00:58:36 ◼   ► You do not have to go very far up the ladder to get to

00:58:38 ◼   ► that level.

00:58:40 ◼   ► We're not talking in like a a world where carriers will be like, That's

00:58:44 ◼   ► too much for our blood.

00:58:45 ◼   ► No, they are used to selling this, right?

00:58:46 ◼   ► Like this is a this is a normal price for a phone now, but

00:58:49 ◼   ► it's not a normal starting price for a phone.

00:58:53 ◼   ► Um, but I I would expect Apple sells quite a lot of phones that

00:58:56 ◼   ► cost two thousand dollars.

00:58:58 ◼   ► Uh uh upgradians will know that ever since the iPhone ten c came out,

00:59:02 ◼   ► part of the narrative that I've been telling is that

00:59:06 ◼   ► Apple realized they could charge more for the iPhone and they've added more affordable

00:59:11 ◼   ► iPhones, but they've also added more expensive iPhones.

00:59:14 ◼   ► Remember, what we think of as the iPhone base, not the Pro, is kind

00:59:18 ◼   ► of priced like the iPhone used to be.

00:59:20 ◼   ► But then the iPhone 10 came out and it cost $1,000.

00:59:23 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:59:23 ◼   ► It's like, oh.

00:59:24 ◼   ► And the and that price has crept up.

00:59:26 ◼   ► And what Apple has learned so far, as far as I can tell, as

00:59:30 ◼   ► far as any of us can tell, is that for some people,

00:59:34 ◼   ► we have not yet found the price that Apple could charge for a phone

00:59:37 ◼   ► that people won't pay.

00:59:38 ◼   ► Yep.

00:59:38 ◼   ► And if you're Apple,

00:59:41 ◼   ► optimally, if somebody, if some portion of your audience is willing to give $2,000

00:59:47 ◼   ► for a phone,

00:59:49 ◼   ► you you don't say, I'm sorry, $1,200 is as high as it goes.

00:59:55 ◼   ► You say, uh, here you go, sir, Two thousand dollar phone, please give me

01:00:00 ◼   ► that money now.

01:00:01 ◼   ► And that, you know, this might be it.

01:00:04 ◼   ► Although I really feel okay.

01:00:06 ◼   ► I feel like a lot of the narrative is gonna be wow, this is

01:00:10 ◼   ► an expensive phone.

01:00:11 ◼   ► And how well is it gonna sell?

01:00:12 ◼   ► And we know that it's two percent.

01:00:14 ◼   ► Two percent of the global smartphone market is folding phones.

01:00:17 ◼   ► It's tiny.

01:00:18 ◼   ► It's way tinier than the percent market share of an uh iPhone Air or

01:00:22 ◼   ► an iPhone mini.

01:00:24 ◼   ► It's tiny.

01:00:25 ◼   ► I think it will go up

01:00:27 ◼   ► because of Apple and because even like Apple Shining on this category will sell

01:00:32 ◼   ► more Android folding phones too.

01:00:34 ◼   ► I mean this is the Apple effect.

01:00:35 ◼   ► But I I think we need to

01:00:40 ◼   ► not just look at the price because of that.

01:00:43 ◼   ► This isn't just about them being expensive.

01:00:45 ◼   ► It is about being them expensive, but not just.

01:00:48 ◼   ► This is a weird phone.

01:00:49 ◼   ► It's lacking that camera.

01:00:51 ◼   ► It's a different shape.

01:00:52 ◼   ► Uh how do you use it?

01:00:54 ◼   ► Do you really want it?

01:00:55 ◼   ► Uh you know, is it better to just buy an iPhone on an iPad

01:00:57 ◼   ► mini or whatever?

01:00:58 ◼   ► Like there's so many other arguments about it because it's not like an iPhone

01:01:02 ◼   ► you've had before.

01:01:03 ◼   ► And it's it's wider and it's thicker and it's all of these other things

01:01:06 ◼   ► that like

01:01:07 ◼   ► It's not going to be for everybody.

01:01:09 ◼   ► Even if it was the same price as an iPhone Pro, it's not going

01:01:12 ◼   ► to be for everybody.

01:01:13 ◼   ► It's going to be a niche product.

01:01:14 ◼   ► Now the question is, is it

01:01:18 ◼   ► is this technology sort of the phone of the future?

01:01:20 ◼   ► And I think in some ways it is, Because what we've learned over the

01:01:24 ◼   ► years since the iPhone six and since before that when Samsung learned it, people

01:01:28 ◼   ► like big screens.

01:01:30 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:01:30 ◼   ► But big screens don't fit in your pocket.

01:01:32 ◼   ► So ultimately you do need a folding phone so that you can have a

01:01:35 ◼   ► big screen that fits in your pocket because you folded it.

01:01:38 ◼   ► And so I do think that this is the future of a lot of

01:01:42 ◼   ► phones, but not not yet.

01:01:45 ◼   ► Right?

01:01:46 ◼   ► For now, it is cutting edge and interesting and has a use case, but

01:01:50 ◼   ► it's very expensive and it's weird.

01:01:52 ◼   ► And like I really firmly believe there are a lot of people who wouldn't

01:01:56 ◼   ► buy this phone for any price because it's just not what they want.

01:02:01 ◼   ► They want a a more traditional iPhone.

01:02:03 ◼   ► It's gonna be too small and too big or both, right?

01:02:06 ◼   ► Like it's a little bit more than a little bit.

01:02:06 ◼   ► Too small, too big, too thick.

01:02:08 ◼   ► All the wrong it's the anti um Goldilocks, right?

01:02:13 ◼   ► It's just wrong in all measures for those people.

01:02:17 ◼   ► I mean good news, Apple sells many other iPhones for you.

01:02:21 ◼   ► But it will be interesting to watch who does gravitate toward this and how

01:02:25 ◼   ► they feel about it.

01:02:26 ◼   ► Um, but just to keep it keep that in mind that when we talk

01:02:29 ◼   ► about the iPhone Air being a flop i in in iPhone terms, because it's

01:02:33 ◼   ► got a small market, small percentage of Apple's iPhone market.

01:02:37 ◼   ► Um, folding phones traditionally are way smaller than that, even.

01:02:41 ◼   ► So what's gonna happen?

01:02:42 ◼   ► I I I don't know.

01:02:43 ◼   ► It's it's it's not gonna be I mean, get ready.

01:02:46 ◼   ► They're gonna be a lot of oh they're not because they're gonna put it

01:02:49 ◼   ► this way, they're not gonna sell that many of 'em.

01:02:51 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:02:52 ◼   ► But they're gonna sell every one they make.

01:02:53 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:02:54 ◼   ► And that's just the nature of this product.

01:02:56 ◼   ► It's it's it's hard for them to make it.

01:02:58 ◼   ► Their volumes are gonna be they're gonna struggle with volumes.

01:03:01 ◼   ► And

01:03:03 ◼   ► um

01:03:04 ◼   ► some people are gonna want them, but how many?

01:03:07 ◼   ► We'll see.

01:03:08 ◼   ► We'll see.

01:03:08 ◼   ► Uh do you?

01:03:10 ◼   ► I mean like do you want it?

01:03:11 ◼   ► I mean I know we'll we'll get it da da but do you see

01:03:13 ◼   ► this phone and you're like I want this phone?

01:03:15 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:03:16 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:03:16 ◼   ► I do too.

01:03:17 ◼   ► It's because it's because I'm an iPad primary.

01:03:20 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:03:20 ◼   ► And I like the idea that this might be able like I don't even

01:03:23 ◼   ► sleep I I know so many people sleep with the iPhone next to them

01:03:26 ◼   ► and I don't.

01:03:26 ◼   ► I sleep with an iPad next to me.

01:03:28 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:03:28 ◼   ► Because my iPad is what I am reading before I go to bed.

01:03:32 ◼   ► Not my iPhone.

01:03:32 ◼   ► My iPhone is parked on a charger in the kitchen.

01:03:36 ◼   ► But I could could you know, could I I I'm gonna rephrase that as

01:03:39 ◼   ► a question, could I use this as my iPad and my iPhone that's with

01:03:45 ◼   ► me all the time?

01:03:46 ◼   ► It's not the same as my iPad.

01:03:48 ◼   ► I've got a big iPad Pro, but like, would it be fulfilling?

01:03:52 ◼   ► And then also I can like put it on my nightstand as a little

01:03:55 ◼   ► clock.

01:03:56 ◼   ► Maybe.

01:03:57 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:03:57 ◼   ► Maybe.

01:03:58 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:03:58 ◼   ► Um I I so I do want it, but the, you know, what I

01:04:03 ◼   ► really wanna do is I want to, you know, see the reviews and hopefully

01:04:07 ◼   ► try one out and write a review and find out because there are probably

01:04:11 ◼   ► lots of gotchas.

01:04:13 ◼   ► Like, oh, it doesn't really do this.

01:04:14 ◼   ► And if this is what you want, you know, and it doesn't really compare

01:04:16 ◼   ► to the iPad because this like there's gonna be a lot of those and

01:04:19 ◼   ► we just don't know what they are yet.

01:04:20 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:04:21 ◼   ► But I am super intrigued by it as somebody who uses the iPhone and

01:04:25 ◼   ► the iPad.

01:04:25 ◼   ► And I think about traveling, like I just went, I was I was in

01:04:28 ◼   ► Oregon over Labor Day weekend and you know I only brought the iPad.

01:04:32 ◼   ► But I had that thought too of like, does this change if I use

01:04:36 ◼   ► this, does this change my travel?

01:04:37 ◼   ► Because I bring my iPad everywhere I go.

01:04:39 ◼   ► Would I not?

01:04:40 ◼   ► Would I just bring my phone and maybe my laptop if I have to

01:04:43 ◼   ► do laptop work?

01:04:44 ◼   ► Would that be enough to just bring my phone on a trip?

01:04:47 ◼   ► Because it's basically an iPad at that point?

01:04:50 ◼   ► I don't know maybe.

01:04:51 ◼   ► I'm intrigued by that.

01:04:53 ◼   ► So maybe.

01:04:55 ◼   ► Yeah, I I know I want this phone because I am fascinated by it.

01:05:01 ◼   ► The and I'm ex so excited to use it.

01:05:05 ◼   ► Like it it looks really exciting and fun and new.

01:05:08 ◼   ► Like really new, like for if you're an iPhone user, right?

01:05:13 ◼   ► I cannot tell if I want this phone as my daily phone.

01:05:19 ◼   ► Like I I uh for me, I absolutely know I will only be able

01:05:23 ◼   ► to make that decision after I use it.

01:05:25 ◼   ► Because there are things that I would actively be giving up that I'm excited

01:05:30 ◼   ► about.

01:05:30 ◼   ► There's stuff that the profile gets this year, which we'll talk about in a

01:05:33 ◼   ► minute, that I'm really excited for.

01:05:35 ◼   ► But also like this phone is heavy.

01:05:37 ◼   ► It's heavier than a Pro Max.

01:05:39 ◼   ► And it's gonna feel weird in my hand.

01:05:41 ◼   ► And it's like, uh, how am I gonna feel about the outside screen?

01:05:45 ◼   ► We spent a lot of time talking about the inside screen, but the outside

01:05:49 ◼   ► screen is gonna be the one you use most.

01:05:51 ◼   ► What does that actually feel like to use?

01:05:54 ◼   ► Right.

01:05:55 ◼   ► And so like, you know, this might be an incredible device, but do I

01:06:00 ◼   ► want it in my pocket every day?

01:06:03 ◼   ► Right.

01:06:03 ◼   ► No way of knowing.

01:06:04 ◼   ► No way until we use it.

01:06:06 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

01:08:13 ◼   ► Uh the colors for these phones.

01:08:15 ◼   ► Uh we have four.

01:08:17 ◼   ► There are four.

01:08:18 ◼   ► We have Burgundy, Glacier, Silver and Black.

01:08:23 ◼   ► I don't remember the names of the silver and black, so I'm gonna say

01:08:25 ◼   ► silver and black into our chest.

01:08:27 ◼   ► Deep black.

01:08:27 ◼   ► Deep black, silly me.

01:08:29 ◼   ► And silver.

01:08:29 ◼   ► What shallow silver?

01:08:31 ◼   ► Like what?

01:08:32 ◼   ► Okay.

01:08:34 ◼   ► I

01:08:35 ◼   ► it's a sh it's a shame.

01:08:37 ◼   ► For me, it's a shame.

01:08:39 ◼   ► I adore adore the orange, the cosmic orange.

01:08:43 ◼   ► I do not like either the burgundy or the glacier.

01:08:46 ◼   ► I don't like it.

01:08:47 ◼   ► Uh for me this year, I think I'm gonna go to silver.

01:08:49 ◼   ► I have a silver MacBook Air, love the silver MacBook Air.

01:08:52 ◼   ► I think silver will be the color for me this year.

01:08:55 ◼   ► Uh are you a burgundy boy?

01:08:56 ◼   ► I wanna oh no.

01:08:58 ◼   ► I wanna see Glacier.

01:09:00 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:09:02 ◼   ► 'Cause I like a blue.

01:09:03 ◼   ► It might be nice.

01:09:04 ◼   ► It looks like it's a visible blue that you you know, a blue you

01:09:07 ◼   ► can see and not a blue where Apple tells you it's blue and you

01:09:09 ◼   ► go, Okay.

01:09:10 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:09:12 ◼   ► Um Also I've over the years had a lot of black phones, so uh

01:09:16 ◼   ► deep black.

01:09:17 ◼   ► Also funny, um

01:09:19 ◼   ► it felt like Apple was kind of running away from black iPhones for a

01:09:22 ◼   ► while.

01:09:23 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:09:24 ◼   ► But they ran to it this year.

01:09:25 ◼   ► Deep black.

01:09:26 ◼   ► Here it is.

01:09:27 ◼   ► They picked up all the black that they missed out last time and they've

01:09:29 ◼   ► added it in.

01:09:30 ◼   ► And it made it deeper.

01:09:32 ◼   ► So um so Glacier I wanna see because I could see myself having a

01:09:36 ◼   ► blue phone.

01:09:36 ◼   ► I like I like that.

01:09:37 ◼   ► If it's a if it's a nice blue.

01:09:39 ◼   ► Um with a name like Glacier I'm not sure it is.

01:09:42 ◼   ► Um and then deep black would be my other preference.

01:09:45 ◼   ► Burgundy, I mean I'd like to see it.

01:09:47 ◼   ► I think it's interesting 'cause, you know, it's a

01:09:51 ◼   ► that's an interesting shade, but again, I I uh mark my words, cosmic orange

01:09:56 ◼   ► is gonna be like a comeback phone.

01:09:58 ◼   ► Like they're gonna bring it back in a year or two on something and

01:10:01 ◼   ► everybody's gonna go, Oh, it's back.

01:10:03 ◼   ► It's an all timer, right?

01:10:04 ◼   ► Like that that is a great color.

01:10:06 ◼   ► Maybe they didn't know how popular it would be, right, when they when they

01:10:09 ◼   ► they announced it uh initially.

01:10:12 ◼   ► Sure seems like it's I think it was pretty popular.

01:10:14 ◼   ► Um, but maybe I'm biased.

01:10:16 ◼   ► Uh but yeah, I I dig the silver phone angle.

01:10:19 ◼   ► And they got rid of the two tone.

01:10:20 ◼   ► They they're they're color matching the two the aluminum and glass.

01:10:24 ◼   ► Oh that's a bummer.

01:10:25 ◼   ► I missed that.

01:10:26 ◼   ► I don't like that.

01:10:27 ◼   ► I like the two tone.

01:10:29 ◼   ► Yep.

01:10:29 ◼   ► They're going the other way.

01:10:30 ◼   ► They're they're they're uh gonna match.

01:10:33 ◼   ► That's a shame.

01:10:34 ◼   ► Why you know, and I I know I was gonna say why have the

01:10:37 ◼   ► glass?

01:10:38 ◼   ► I know there are many really good reasons and not just the colour as

01:10:42 ◼   ► why they had the glass.

01:10:43 ◼   ► But that for me is a shame 'cause I love the two tone look.

01:10:46 ◼   ► Um but yeah, I'll be going I'll be going silver this year.

01:10:49 ◼   ► But it's not all about the colours.

01:10:51 ◼   ► Uh they spent a lot of time uh in the eighteen pro going over

01:10:55 ◼   ► Siri AI again which makes sense.

01:10:58 ◼   ► They showed some very simple third party integrations.

01:11:01 ◼   ► They showed lots of apps that will be able to work.

01:11:04 ◼   ► We just have to wait and see.

01:11:05 ◼   ► And we're what next is it next week iOS twenty seven is out?

01:11:12 ◼   ► I don't know, you tell me.

01:11:13 ◼   ► Yeah, I can find the information out.

01:11:14 ◼   ► I can think so.

01:11:16 ◼   ► I it's I think it's next week.

01:11:18 ◼   ► Um, but we'll I'll double check that.

01:11:19 ◼   ► But yes, I and then I guess we'll start to see what is the

01:11:23 ◼   ► third party situation with Siri AI.

01:11:25 ◼   ► Like how does it actually work?

01:11:27 ◼   ► But I did I enjoyed the demo that they did because I think it

01:11:31 ◼   ► was very helpful to show

01:11:33 ◼   ► many more practical things that it that Siri AI is capable of, um, than

01:11:40 ◼   ► even what we saw at WWDC.

01:11:41 ◼   ► I think it's needed here so people can understand what's coming.

01:11:44 ◼   ► Um I I thought it was a pretty good demo of that.

01:11:48 ◼   ► But um we didn't talk about the A twenty pro when we were talking

01:11:51 ◼   ► about the iPhone Duo.

01:11:53 ◼   ► Um but it's they got spent a little bit more time talking about it

01:11:55 ◼   ► here.

01:11:56 ◼   ► And we get a sense um for what the A twenty

01:12:00 ◼   ► we got a sense what the A twenty would be based upon the M

01:12:03 ◼   ► seven, right, that we learned about a couple of weeks ago.

01:12:06 ◼   ► Um it is a six core CPU with two supercores and four efficiency cores.

01:12:11 ◼   ► They say it is a desktop class supercore.

01:12:14 ◼   ► Seven A seven core GPU, two neural engines, um, an increased memory bandwidth.

01:12:19 ◼   ► It is the widest memory interface shipped on an iPhone, apparently.

01:12:23 ◼   ► Okay.

01:12:24 ◼   ► And then that silicone is pushed right up against the vacuum.

01:12:29 ◼   ► The vapor chamber.

01:12:30 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

01:12:30 ◼   ► So this is a new design they have for the vapor chamber.

01:12:33 ◼   ► This is they're using that the the the packaging technology to put the the

01:12:39 ◼   ► the RAM and the processors and everything in this package that is then um

01:12:44 ◼   ► connected directly to the vapor chamber, which they say improves performance because that improves

01:12:48 ◼   ► cooling and they have a whole new thermal design and three times the surface

01:12:52 ◼   ► area of the vapor chamber.

01:12:54 ◼   ► And uh there's more there's stainless and then graphite and then there's nano-twin copper

01:13:00 ◼   ► material

01:13:02 ◼   ► to move heat away from the display while also s providing strength.

01:13:06 ◼   ► But look, I I was struck by this section of just them talking about

01:13:11 ◼   ► w how they engineer these products kind of holistically.

01:13:14 ◼   ► Like they are providing strength to make the phone not bend using a material

01:13:19 ◼   ► that also is moving heat away from the display.

01:13:22 ◼   ► They're building the chip packaging and attaching it to the vapor chamber, which is

01:13:27 ◼   ► a much larger vapor chamber.

01:13:30 ◼   ► And the goal there is to improve sustained performance, which it does, because it

01:13:33 ◼   ► ultimately they're trying to prevent that that uh chip from having to clock down

01:13:38 ◼   ► because it got too hot.

01:13:40 ◼   ► So great.

01:13:42 ◼   ► And they you know, forty percent improvement, giant leaps in improvements.

01:13:46 ◼   ► You know, they seem very they seem very focused on this right now, right?

01:13:50 ◼   ► That like we only got the vapor chamber last year and for them to

01:13:53 ◼   ► have already done a lot of additional work on it.

01:13:55 ◼   ► This is clearly something that is important to them with the iPhone now, of

01:13:59 ◼   ► allowing them to get performance.

01:14:00 ◼   ► They clearly see it as an increasing benefit and an increasing need for a

01:14:06 ◼   ► performance, high sustained performance on the iPhone, gaming, AI, this kind of stuff.

01:14:11 ◼   ► Um it seems like they're putting a lot of effort into that with the

01:14:13 ◼   ► thermals.

01:14:14 ◼   ► I mean, you know, we spoke about it on this show.

01:14:16 ◼   ► It was getting really bad.

01:14:18 ◼   ► Like the the these phones were getting uncomfortable to hold.

01:14:22 ◼   ► Um and so I I am happy that they have they've done this.

01:14:25 ◼   ► Like I think No sixteen sixteen was really hot.

01:14:29 ◼   ► Um seventeen is a a lot better.

01:14:31 ◼   ► I imagine this will be a lot better.

01:14:32 ◼   ► Yeah the other way to view this, of course, is that Apple has the

01:14:36 ◼   ► chip powers to drive this and then boast about it.

01:14:42 ◼   ► And the question I mean, this is why they I think they're really excited

01:14:45 ◼   ► about obviously they're excited about gaming on the iPhone they always have been because

01:14:48 ◼   ► it's something that takes advantage of their chip powers.

01:14:51 ◼   ► AI now is another thing they can point to.

01:14:54 ◼   ► Now, how many on device AI things are happening on phones that will require

01:14:59 ◼   ► uh two banks of neural engines plus GPU accelerators on this chip.

01:15:04 ◼   ► I don't know.

01:15:05 ◼   ► But like it's what Apple can do.

01:15:07 ◼   ► This is the part they can do is they can make their phone really

01:15:10 ◼   ► fast.

01:15:10 ◼   ► And then also alternate alternately making it more efficient which is also important for

01:15:15 ◼   ► them, right?

01:15:16 ◼   ► Is to say, yes, but also it's the best battery life we've ever had.

01:15:21 ◼   ► That we, you know, they did the new design.

01:15:24 ◼   ► And if you're the eSIM only model, which has a little tiny bit more

01:15:28 ◼   ► battery, You get the best uh battery life of any iPhone.

01:15:32 ◼   ► And like that that real world test again, they're quoting in a real world

01:15:38 ◼   ► test 24 hours per charge of an 18 Pro and 30 hours on a

01:15:43 ◼   ► Pro Max which is a wild number.

01:15:45 ◼   ► That is a wild number.

01:15:46 ◼   ► 24 hours of battery life on an iPhone.

01:15:49 ◼   ► And also the the what did it say?

01:15:51 ◼   ► The 18 Pro, the battery life was as much as the second

01:15:58 ◼   ► Pro Max.

01:15:59 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:15:59 ◼   ► That's really cool.

01:16:01 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

01:16:02 ◼   ► Like I I'm I'm very, very down with that.

01:16:05 ◼   ► Like that's really good.

01:16:06 ◼   ► I'm I'm very happy with that.

01:16:08 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:16:08 ◼   ► And they they list it off like this is a combination of the chip

01:16:13 ◼   ► and also the software

01:16:16 ◼   ► and like it's and and the battery and figuring out how they all work

01:16:22 ◼   ► together um and then the battery life and Emerges from that.

01:16:27 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:16:27 ◼   ► Yeah, it's really very interesting stuff.

01:16:31 ◼   ► Uh and but it's fifty percent charge in fifteen minutes on a wired charger.

01:16:35 ◼   ► Like they're doing some faster charging stuff.

01:16:38 ◼   ► So these are all good things, right?

01:16:39 ◼   ► Like they're just like Oh yes, this is all good stuff.

01:16:42 ◼   ► Like, yeah, if you're getting on an airplane and you only have five minutes

01:16:44 ◼   ► to plug it in, you'll be able to watch a movie on the flight.

01:16:47 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:16:47 ◼   ► That's basically their argument here.

01:16:48 ◼   ► Yep.

01:16:49 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:16:49 ◼   ► So that's pretty cool.

01:16:50 ◼   ► It's pretty cool.

01:16:51 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:16:51 ◼   ► Should talk about the camera.

01:16:52 ◼   ► Let's talk about it.

01:16:54 ◼   ► We have we have the variable first variable aperture physical aperture control on an

01:17:00 ◼   ► iPhone ever.

01:17:02 ◼   ► With Mike

01:17:04 ◼   ► laser cut blades thinner than a human hair.

01:17:09 ◼   ► I don't I don't know what to do with that.

01:17:11 ◼   ► Did they do a James Bond thing with John Turnus at the end?

01:17:15 ◼   ► I think they did, right?

01:17:16 ◼   ► Where like it was what John Turnus and then i it did the the

01:17:20 ◼   ► the kind of the aperture thing.

01:17:21 ◼   ► A little aperture with the gun barrel.

01:17:23 ◼   ► I maybe I think they were I don't know why they why they did

01:17:26 ◼   ► that.

01:17:26 ◼   ► Um it looked like that to me.

01:17:27 ◼   ► Uh I hope that that's what they're doing.

01:17:29 ◼   ► Again, they're they're they're boasting here about the impressive technology that's required to do

01:17:34 ◼   ► a physical aperture.

01:17:36 ◼   ► It's a moving part, right?

01:17:37 ◼   ► It's on a device that has no moving parts.

01:17:40 ◼   ► But this is what you need to do for the physics of light.

01:17:42 ◼   ► So now they've got that, you know, rotor mechanism and it allows them to

01:17:47 ◼   ► The the key thing here is it allows them to let in lots and

01:17:50 ◼   ► lots of light when they want to, which leads to positive things like night

01:17:56 ◼   ► mode captures being faster.

01:17:58 ◼   ► Um, but also it allows them to close the aperture when they need to

01:18:04 ◼   ► to block the light and also to create other photographic effects.

01:18:07 ◼   ► So you end up with um the software being or or the user, but

01:18:12 ◼   ► the user or the software being able to control that aperture in order to

01:18:16 ◼   ► get the desired effect.

01:18:17 ◼   ► And and you know, there's a lot as we got into it, the the

01:18:21 ◼   ► pro controls, which is that thing that had been rumored is like, are they

01:18:24 ◼   ► gonna build the whole app?

01:18:25 ◼   ► And the answer is no they're gonna build this whole pro control system where

01:18:30 ◼   ► you can customize your apps and you've got control over more stuff and have

01:18:34 ◼   ► a histogram.

01:18:35 ◼   ► This is what Mark German was talking about, right?

01:18:38 ◼   ► This was the the the thing that he was talking about a long time

01:18:41 ◼   ► ago.

01:18:41 ◼   ► And this is what supposedly Apple hired Sebastian DeWitt, who did um who did

01:18:46 ◼   ► Halide uh to work on some of this stuff too, because this is pro

01:18:50 ◼   ► camera features inside the camera app.

01:18:53 ◼   ► Um a histogram, you can adjust the aperture, you can change the s shutter

01:18:57 ◼   ► speed.

01:18:57 ◼   ► That was a thing I really liked is like if you want to have

01:19:00 ◼   ► motion trails or uh stuff like that, you can change the shutter speed uh

01:19:05 ◼   ► in the camera app.

01:19:07 ◼   ► Um which I don't think you could do in a camera app before I

01:19:11 ◼   ► think you needed an advanced app for that.

01:19:13 ◼   ► So that'll be the challenge here is that those advanced camera apps are gonna

01:19:16 ◼   ► be a little challenged by this.

01:19:18 ◼   ► But at the same time what I would say is the people who want

01:19:20 ◼   ► to use the full features of the camera, we'll probably want to use an

01:19:24 ◼   ► advanced camera app instead of this.

01:19:26 ◼   ► So, you know, there's always more room out on the edges for those.

01:19:29 ◼   ► But I I was impressed that Apple is adding in a whole load of

01:19:32 ◼   ► that stuff.

01:19:33 ◼   ► And then photographic styles, they uh they increased as well.

01:19:35 ◼   ► Yeah I'm with texture and texture and grains.

01:19:38 ◼   ► So you can you can personalize your pr your photographic style even more now.

01:19:42 ◼   ► I just want them to keep working on that feature because I I really

01:19:45 ◼   ► like that feature.

01:19:46 ◼   ► Um and

01:19:49 ◼   ► I like a little bit of grain in my photos too.

01:19:51 ◼   ► So I'm pleased that they did this.

01:19:53 ◼   ► Nice.

01:19:53 ◼   ► Um I I feel like at this point I'm not gonna need to use

01:19:56 ◼   ► a photo editor at all on my phone.

01:19:59 ◼   ► Um, because like I've I've used Visco uh VSCO, I've used Darkroom, like I've

01:20:04 ◼   ► used these apps over time.

01:20:06 ◼   ► And photographic styles has reduced the amount of time that I use these types

01:20:11 ◼   ► of uh uh editing tools because I I really like the I you have

01:20:14 ◼   ► a slightly tweaked gold uh is the the color preset slightly tweaked it.

01:20:19 ◼   ► If I could add a little grain in there, like I I would be

01:20:22 ◼   ► very happy.

01:20:23 ◼   ► I don't know if I'd use that all the time, but I like being

01:20:26 ◼   ► able to add some of that in and and play around with the photographic

01:20:29 ◼   ► styles, which is a feature that I I I really like.

01:20:31 ◼   ► Oh, I was I want to just touch on the aperture again, uh just

01:20:35 ◼   ► as like I'm I'm really intrigued to see what it looks like from my

01:20:39 ◼   ► photos.

01:20:40 ◼   ► It's like 'cause again, it's like they show off the the the example images

01:20:45 ◼   ► and like this was taken at this and this and it's like I don't

01:20:47 ◼   ► I have no concept of what you're showing me.

01:20:51 ◼   ► You know, it's like look how impressive this image is.

01:20:54 ◼   ► And it's like, I agree that's a good image that what you're showing me

01:20:58 ◼   ► you know, like these these look good, but what would they have been otherwise?

01:21:04 ◼   ► And and I'm you know, it's like I feel like so many times over

01:21:08 ◼   ► the years there have been like the biggest leap in the camera.

01:21:12 ◼   ► And then we get it and we're like, I mean yes, a little bit

01:21:14 ◼   ► better.

01:21:15 ◼   ► Like but i they it's not huge and it does feel like every time

01:21:20 ◼   ► that they have done stuff around lighting, the amount of light that can go

01:21:24 ◼   ► into an image, it has made a big improvement.

01:21:26 ◼   ► So So my hope is that that is what we're gonna see.

01:21:28 ◼   ► Right.

01:21:29 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:21:29 ◼   ► I was happy to hear like a few little bit of night mode getting

01:21:32 ◼   ► improved.

01:21:32 ◼   ► That made me excited.

01:21:34 ◼   ► Like faster and better.

01:21:35 ◼   ► Brilliant, because I quite like that.

01:21:37 ◼   ► And ultimately you have more control over depth of field because of the aperture.

01:21:42 ◼   ► So there'll be some degree of that that is going on.

01:21:45 ◼   ► And I'm gonna be intrigued to see like without the

01:21:50 ◼   ► pro controls, how much control do I get?

01:21:53 ◼   ► Right?

01:21:53 ◼   ► How automatic is it?

01:21:55 ◼   ► What do they how simple is it?

01:21:57 ◼   ► You know, like w w how much benefit do I get without digging into

01:22:01 ◼   ► the big stuff?

01:22:02 ◼   ► My my imagine is that there'll be a, you know, fully functional auto setting

01:22:05 ◼   ► that does just what a auto setting on a film camera would do, which

01:22:08 ◼   ► is gonna adjust the aperture based on how much light it senses and and

01:22:12 ◼   ► you know, that's how that's gonna work.

01:22:14 ◼   ► Can we speaking of which, new photo features?

01:22:17 ◼   ► Yep.

01:22:18 ◼   ► Um, Apple reference image was announced today.

01:22:21 ◼   ► Yes.

01:22:22 ◼   ► In the midst of a photo a phone launch, they announced this new system

01:22:26 ◼   ► whereby they literally sign their photo data from the sensor at a pixel level

01:22:34 ◼   ► and then use private cloud compute

01:22:38 ◼   ► to generate a signed unalterable image that lives with your photo that you can

01:22:45 ◼   ► edit so that you can always provide the signed photo as evidence of that

01:22:53 ◼   ► this was not an artificially manipulated photo.

01:22:55 ◼   ► Interesting.

01:22:57 ◼   ► Interesting.

01:22:59 ◼   ► I mean they're supporting Synth ID as well, which is just, you know a

01:23:02 ◼   ► tag if something was AI generated, but and and the way they're doing it

01:23:07 ◼   ► is it's not that you can't edit your photo, but by putting them together,

01:23:12 ◼   ► what it's saying if you adjust the You know, you crop it and you

01:23:15 ◼   ► adjust the the contrast and the colors and all of that because you're a

01:23:18 ◼   ► news photographer.

01:23:20 ◼   ► Um, but perhaps your employer wants also to have the evidence of I don't

01:23:27 ◼   ► know how this is gonna work, the evidence that this is a a real

01:23:30 ◼   ► photo and not something to say I generated, the Apple is basically providing iPhone

01:23:34 ◼   ► photographers with the ability to do that and say, here's the evidence that this

01:23:37 ◼   ► is a real photo.

01:23:38 ◼   ► This is a a cryptographically signed original that is unaltered.

01:23:43 ◼   ► That's interesting.

01:23:45 ◼   ► It is interesting.

01:23:47 ◼   ► The thing that you've suggested is great, right?

01:23:49 ◼   ► That like people who are camera professionals will be able to have this is

01:23:53 ◼   ► how they sold the feature is this is a very specific feature that is

01:23:56 ◼   ► how do I prove that this photo is real?

01:23:58 ◼   ► And the answer is this is how.

01:23:59 ◼   ► But like kind of what I want

01:24:02 ◼   ► is what about everyone?

01:24:04 ◼   ► You know what I mean?

01:24:05 ◼   ► Well I I think the answer is Apple did this.

01:24:08 ◼   ► I I and I don't know enough about the background here to know if

01:24:11 ◼   ► there's somebody who's trying to work on a standard here or not.

01:24:13 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:24:14 ◼   ► So this could be part of a larger thing or it could be Apple

01:24:17 ◼   ► just laying their cards down and saying everybody else should do this too, some

01:24:20 ◼   ► version of this.

01:24:21 ◼   ► Which uh it's an interesting take, right?

01:24:23 ◼   ► Of like, how do I know that this photo you you could you could

01:24:26 ◼   ► end up in a place where any photo you see, you could say, show

01:24:29 ◼   ► me the original and verify that this is real.

01:24:33 ◼   ► And it if it if it showed you something that had been cryptographically verified,

01:24:39 ◼   ► then you would know that it was a real image.

01:24:40 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:24:41 ◼   ► That could be great.

01:24:42 ◼   ► But, you know, Apple isn't the world today.

01:24:44 ◼   ► They're changing the output of their iPhone.

01:24:48 ◼   ► But I think it is an interesting attempt to

01:24:52 ◼   ► reinforce that this is the you know by by getting down to the pixel

01:24:56 ◼   ► level on the sensor, um proving that this is a photo that was actually

01:25:00 ◼   ► captured.

01:25:01 ◼   ► There were two video features that I was excited about.

01:25:06 ◼   ► Um one is that you can add cinematic mode effects to videos after you

01:25:11 ◼   ► shoot them.

01:25:12 ◼   ► Brilliant.

01:25:13 ◼   ► Right.

01:25:13 ◼   ► It's like I don't want to be choosing a mode, but maybe I would

01:25:17 ◼   ► be able to make a video better, right?

01:25:18 ◼   ► By by having adding some of these effects.

01:25:21 ◼   ► Um and also smart focus tracking with on-device AI.

01:25:24 ◼   ► So you can set like track this person and it will track them, keep

01:25:27 ◼   ► them in focus.

01:25:28 ◼   ► If they leave and come back, it still tracks them.

01:25:30 ◼   ► That's a cool.

01:25:31 ◼   ► That's cool feature.

01:25:32 ◼   ► Um

01:25:34 ◼   ► Smaller dynamic island now?

01:25:37 ◼   ► Sure.

01:25:37 ◼   ► Uh you can have three live activities viewable at once.

01:25:41 ◼   ► Fun.

01:25:41 ◼   ► Cool.

01:25:42 ◼   ► Right.

01:25:42 ◼   ► Like that's that's nice.

01:25:43 ◼   ► And I expect that that will also work uh on the duo because the

01:25:48 ◼   ► dynamic island

01:25:50 ◼   ► Is good.

01:25:52 ◼   ► I don't know what the geometry of that is.

01:25:54 ◼   ► I'm gonna assume it's a good idea.

01:25:55 ◼   ► Especially the inside one though, because there isn't one until you need it.

01:25:59 ◼   ► It's software.

01:25:59 ◼   ► So it's all software.

01:26:01 ◼   ► The eighteen pro starts at $11.99.

01:26:05 ◼   ► So it is $100 more at the starting price.

01:26:08 ◼   ► It goes up to two terabytes and it goes way up, right?

01:26:12 ◼   ► Like it it keeps on going.

01:26:14 ◼   ► An 18 Pro Max at two terabytes is two thousand four hundred and ninety-nine

01:26:19 ◼   ► dollars.

01:26:20 ◼   ► So that that two terabyte model it they're making feels like they're making more

01:26:24 ◼   ► money as it goes up in storage, which you'd expect.

01:26:27 ◼   ► Um I I saw uh while we were recording in the live chat people

01:26:31 ◼   ► were saying that the older phones got more expensive.

01:26:36 ◼   ► Yeah, a hundred dollars.

01:26:37 ◼   ► All all the other phones are a hundred dollars more expensive too today.

01:26:41 ◼   ► This was the price increase day for the iPhone.

01:26:43 ◼   ► Okay.

01:26:44 ◼   ► I mean it's a hundred for all of them.

01:26:46 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:26:47 ◼   ► Uh d I don't I don't know if I expected that at this point,

01:26:52 ◼   ► but I guess if you're gonna do it, do it now, right?

01:26:57 ◼   ► So Yeah.

01:26:58 ◼   ► Very interesting stuff.

01:27:00 ◼   ► Uh pre-order is on Saturday and they're available on the eighteenth of September.

01:27:07 ◼   ► Okay.

01:27:09 ◼   ► This episode is brought to you by Factor.

01:27:12 ◼   ► Summer is in full swing.

01:27:14 ◼   ► You know what that means?

01:27:16 ◼   ► Travel.

01:27:17 ◼   ► I know that when I travel, uh, it can not even just the travel

01:27:21 ◼   ► itself, the before and after things become very busy.

01:27:24 ◼   ► Times if I swap in time zones, the jet lag can really affect my

01:27:29 ◼   ► eating and these kinds of things it can be really tricky for me to

01:27:33 ◼   ► get into good habits because I'm like super stressed and uh the good news

01:27:37 ◼   ► is factor makes it really easy to get back on track because factor makes

01:27:40 ◼   ► chef crafted dietitian designed, ready to eat meals so you don't have to choose

01:27:44 ◼   ► between real food and convenience.

01:27:46 ◼   ► With over 175 banned ingredients, every factor meal is designed around what supports a

01:27:52 ◼   ► healthier lifestyle and nothing that doesn't matter.

01:27:55 ◼   ► Factor meals are ready in two minutes and require no prep and no cleanup.

01:27:59 ◼   ► So even on the days your schedule is completely out of control, eating well

01:28:03 ◼   ► is still achievable.

01:28:04 ◼   ► Every week you'll find over a hundred nutrient dense menu items that you can

01:28:09 ◼   ► choose from with new options like salmon burgers, shredded pork, colored greens, and more.

01:28:19 ◼   ► 97% of users agree that factor meals help them live a healthier life.

01:28:23 ◼   ► So you can feel confident that you're doing something good for yourself with every

01:28:27 ◼   ► meal.

01:28:28 ◼   ► Jason, I know that the Snell family, the extended Snell family, love factor meals.

01:28:33 ◼   ► What do you love about them?

01:28:34 ◼   ► Convenience.

01:28:35 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:28:36 ◼   ► Two minutes.

01:28:37 ◼   ► It's done.

01:28:37 ◼   ► And they're not bad.

01:28:38 ◼   ► They're they're they're actually they taste good, which is part of the secret.

01:28:42 ◼   ► Is I don't know, if you if you've microwaved a meal, um

01:28:48 ◼   ► there's flavors that are not the best.

01:28:51 ◼   ► And Factor somehow has found a way to avoid that.

01:28:53 ◼   ► I think that's secret ways of making it so that the meat like a

01:28:57 ◼   ► like my wife will not eat reheated chicken uh from the microwave.

01:29:01 ◼   ► She just can't.

01:29:02 ◼   ► There's something about it It's just it doesn't matter where it's from.

01:29:05 ◼   ► And she'll do it with Factor because I think it's not reheated.

01:29:08 ◼   ► I think that it's I think they've they've like not cooked it all the

01:29:12 ◼   ► way so that it cooks again at the end.

01:29:14 ◼   ► I don't know this is these are just our theories.

01:29:15 ◼   ► But like it's it is a cut above.

01:29:17 ◼   ► And that is one of the reasons that when we get factor meals in,

01:29:20 ◼   ► my uh wife steals them and takes them to work.

01:29:22 ◼   ► And when we were worried about my mom's nutrition, we similarly ordered a bunch

01:29:26 ◼   ► of factory meals for her so that she could have something that she didn't

01:29:29 ◼   ► have to make because she's just Uh living at home by herself and doesn't.

01:29:33 ◼   ► So get her some warm, nutritious meals that all she has just press a

01:29:37 ◼   ► button on her microwave.

01:29:38 ◼   ► That's pretty good.

01:29:40 ◼   ► You can go and find out more about this for yourself right now and

01:29:43 ◼   ► you can eat real by going to factormeals.com slash upgrade fifty off and using

01:30:05 ◼   ► Upgrade 50 off at factormeals.com.

01:30:08 ◼   ► C website for details.

01:30:10 ◼   ► Our thanks to Factor for their support of this show and all of Relay.

01:30:16 ◼   ► All right.

01:30:17 ◼   ► Before we move on,

01:30:20 ◼   ► important category to mention.

01:30:21 ◼   ► Okay.

01:30:22 ◼   ► Accessories.

01:30:23 ◼   ► Ah, okay.

01:30:25 ◼   ► So So they're still making Tech Woven a thing.

01:30:28 ◼   ► That's exciting.

01:30:30 ◼   ► Yep.

01:30:31 ◼   ► Okay.

01:30:32 ◼   ► I mean fine woven has become tech woven.

01:30:34 ◼   ► We're still weaving.

01:30:36 ◼   ► There's there's there's no new there's no new woven.

01:30:38 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

01:30:40 ◼   ► Um, but more importantly, I think one of our draft picks that we didn't

01:30:45 ◼   ► do is a new accessory of some sort is introduced.

01:30:48 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:30:49 ◼   ► It's a shame because there was there is a new wrist strap for iPhone

01:30:54 ◼   ► and the AirPods Pro case as well.

01:30:57 ◼   ► So instead of just the existing strap Yeah, that's a good use.

01:31:02 ◼   ► There is there is now a wrist strap.

01:31:05 ◼   ► So you can take that case and then put the instead of j using

01:31:08 ◼   ► the connectors for the the b cross body strap, you can use a wrist

01:31:13 ◼   ► strap or you can loop it around the little AirPods Pro case and do

01:31:16 ◼   ► it there too.

01:31:16 ◼   ► So that's a new thing.

01:31:17 ◼   ► I guess that looks like you could use the crossbody strap kind of with

01:31:21 ◼   ► an App Bus Pro?

01:31:23 ◼   ► I don't think so.

01:31:23 ◼   ► I don't think it works that way.

01:31:24 ◼   ► Because it's the two sides, right?

01:31:25 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:31:26 ◼   ► Yeah, yeah.

01:31:26 ◼   ► I don't think I don't think it's the same.

01:31:28 ◼   ► Um there is a uh iPhone duo case that is two pieces for the

01:31:32 ◼   ► two sides of it, which is how uh that was my question last time

01:31:35 ◼   ► was how do you do a a folding phone case and the answer is

01:31:37 ◼   ► two pieces.

01:31:39 ◼   ► And there is the iPhone Duo folio case, which has a kickstand, which I

01:31:47 ◼   ► think is a first for Apple.

01:31:49 ◼   ► Um, a kickstand.

01:31:52 ◼   ► Now, I'm not a fan of the kickstand case.

01:31:55 ◼   ► I have my reasons.

01:31:56 ◼   ► My reasons are mostly the kickstands are bad for laps.

01:32:00 ◼   ► They're unstable in a lap.

01:32:02 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:32:02 ◼   ► However,

01:32:04 ◼   ► I thought the duopolio case actually looked okay.

01:32:07 ◼   ► The idea that you you might want to have it be be like on

01:32:11 ◼   ► a table.

01:32:13 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:32:13 ◼   ► I thought it w I thought it was okay.

01:32:15 ◼   ► I don't want one, but I think it's interesting use of a kickstand.

01:32:18 ◼   ► The the weird thing about this case to me though is that you cover

01:32:22 ◼   ► the front of the phone as well.

01:32:25 ◼   ► I I don't know.

01:32:27 ◼   ► You do.

01:32:27 ◼   ► It's it's like a it's it's like a Oh yeah it covers it covers

01:32:31 ◼   ► your well it's like a book.

01:32:33 ◼   ► It's un you have to open it up to see the front of the

01:32:36 ◼   ► phone too.

01:32:36 ◼   ► But you just treat it like a book then.

01:32:38 ◼   ► How does that case look?

01:32:39 ◼   ► I don't know it's weird.

01:32:40 ◼   ► Let's f we'll find out.

01:32:41 ◼   ► I can't wait to try it.

01:32:43 ◼   ► Because the I guess the I mean it covers I guess the duo case

01:32:46 ◼   ► is two pieces.

01:32:47 ◼   ► I think it's I think it's magn I think the folio case is magnetic,

01:32:51 ◼   ► so you can open the folio up.

01:32:53 ◼   ► But I but you're right, it is kind of just treating it like it's

01:32:56 ◼   ► a book.

01:32:57 ◼   ► You never need to see the other screen.

01:32:59 ◼   ► I don't understand how this case works.

01:33:01 ◼   ► Like what happens when you open the front part?

01:33:04 ◼   ► Where does it go?

01:33:06 ◼   ► This is fascinating.

01:33:08 ◼   ► Around back.

01:33:09 ◼   ► I don't know.

01:33:10 ◼   ► It's a mystery.

01:33:11 ◼   ► I need to know more.

01:33:13 ◼   ► Well surely there are hands-on events happening right now and people are are showing

01:33:18 ◼   ► off these things.

01:33:19 ◼   ► But yeah, that is a really weird phone case.

01:33:22 ◼   ► Anyway, so stay tuned for that.

01:33:23 ◼   ► But um shout out to those who love kickstands.

01:33:26 ◼   ► Cause Apple's kicking it.

01:33:27 ◼   ► Yep.

01:33:28 ◼   ► A little bit.

01:33:28 ◼   ► Yep.

01:33:29 ◼   ► They're making a stand and they're kicking it.

01:33:32 ◼   ► Alright, should we talk about the Apple Watch?

01:33:34 ◼   ► We should.

01:33:34 ◼   ► Alright, so we've got the Apple Watch Series twelve and the Apple Watch Ultra

01:33:39 ◼   ► Four.

01:33:40 ◼   ► I guess the biggest thing that's gone on here is they've redone what they're

01:33:44 ◼   ► calling the health sensing system.

01:33:46 ◼   ► So this is all of the different sensors on the back of the Apple

01:33:48 ◼   ► Watch that are tracking a bunch of things, which is essentially allowing them to

01:33:52 ◼   ► take heart rate information all day now.

01:33:55 ◼   ► Right.

01:33:55 ◼   ► All the time, yeah.

01:33:56 ◼   ► All the time.

01:33:57 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:33:57 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:33:57 ◼   ► That's the big that's the big thing here.

01:33:59 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:33:59 ◼   ► You get the sense that they they increased the surface for the ECG, which

01:34:02 ◼   ► is probably good.

01:34:04 ◼   ► Um, but the the big story here is that they're monitoring your heart rate

01:34:09 ◼   ► at a all the time instead of just like just when you're doing a

01:34:13 ◼   ► workout or or and then I think what it w it was like when

01:34:16 ◼   ► you're doing a workout or there was a sample that would happen every so

01:34:19 ◼   ► often.

01:34:20 ◼   ► But now it's just all the time, every five seconds.

01:34:23 ◼   ► And then they're also measuring heart rate variability more often as well, which allows

01:34:27 ◼   ► them to claim it's the most accurate heart sensing and a wearable.

01:34:30 ◼   ► So that's a big upgrade.

01:34:32 ◼   ► So they didn't we didn't get new sensors, we got better sensors, which I

01:34:35 ◼   ► I think that's good.

01:34:36 ◼   ► I I I get the feeling like the sensor stack on the Apple Watch

01:34:40 ◼   ► was kind of built up over time and that this was like their redesign

01:34:43 ◼   ► of it to get all of this stuff to be more efficient.

01:34:45 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:34:47 ◼   ► With this is a few things going on, right?

01:34:49 ◼   ► There as you said like they're uh they're gonna display this information in new

01:34:54 ◼   ► ways.

01:34:54 ◼   ► The they have a new heart rate kind of view in the heart app.

01:34:59 ◼   ► HR V is now in the vitals app and there's a new daytime view

01:35:03 ◼   ► of the Vitals app as well as the nighttime view because they're taking the

01:35:07 ◼   ► information more.

01:35:08 ◼   ► And then all of this is flowing into a new readiness score.

01:35:12 ◼   ► This is something that is in all of the fitness apps and wearables now.

01:35:18 ◼   ► Um th and you know, it's Sleep Plus Plus has a readiness score and

01:35:21 ◼   ► it's taking in how you've slept overnight and also it will update throughout the

01:35:25 ◼   ► day.

01:35:25 ◼   ► So it's kind of like your readiness at any point.

01:35:27 ◼   ► It'll give you a score of up to 10, and it kind of gives

01:35:30 ◼   ► you an inform gives you information about how you should be dealing with your

01:35:33 ◼   ► fitness.

01:35:34 ◼   ► But there was a bunch of other bits that I thought were interesting.

01:35:37 ◼   ► So there's a whole new health app design, which is coming later this year,

01:35:41 ◼   ► which I found really interesting.

01:35:43 ◼   ► Um, and it's redesigned, it's got a bunch of Apple intelligence powered insights and

01:35:47 ◼   ► stuff like that.

01:35:48 ◼   ► But they're also doing health age

01:35:51 ◼   ► long so this is like how old how old does your body act compared

01:35:56 ◼   ► to your age.

01:35:58 ◼   ► Right.

01:35:58 ◼   ► Um longevity, which is like this wheel which is summarizing a bunch of key

01:36:03 ◼   ► areas about your health.

01:36:04 ◼   ► I don't like that phrase, longevity.

01:36:07 ◼   ► Right.

01:36:08 ◼   ► But you know You will die soon.

01:36:10 ◼   ► And they also have, I think this is really cool, a test, I reckon,

01:36:14 ◼   ► to calibrate your cardio fitness score.

01:36:17 ◼   ► Cause I've heard from including underscore says that the some of the cardio fitness

01:36:21 ◼   ► stuff from the Apple Watch can be quite off compared to other devices.

01:36:24 ◼   ► So it's a test you can do for cardio fitness, which I expect then

01:36:28 ◼   ► calibrates it as well.

01:36:29 ◼   ► But that looked that test looked really cool.

01:36:31 ◼   ► Um I thought that the overall health kind of package and part of the

01:36:37 ◼   ► the Apple Watch presentation much stronger than previous years.

01:36:40 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:36:41 ◼   ► Because it's the combination of hardware and software.

01:36:43 ◼   ► They've been missing the hardware stuff for a long time.

01:36:45 ◼   ► And the uh the updated health app.

01:36:48 ◼   ► Right.

01:36:48 ◼   ► Which they they really are leaning into that and and talking about that in

01:36:52 ◼   ► the um in the Apple Watch made sense.

01:36:57 ◼   ► But like that's that's that's a right correct me if I'm wrong, that's a

01:37:00 ◼   ► new health app that's not in the iOS twenty seven betas.

01:37:04 ◼   ► It is not in the betas.

01:37:05 ◼   ► It's coming later this year.

01:37:06 ◼   ► Yeah, yeah.

01:37:07 ◼   ► So that's interesting.

01:37:08 ◼   ► That's that's something that they held back because they I think wanted to have

01:37:11 ◼   ► all of this other stuff that they were gonna put in there.

01:37:14 ◼   ► And I'm a that's really interesting.

01:37:16 ◼   ► I've been asking for a long time on this show, right?

01:37:18 ◼   ► That that I wanted Apple to do a better job of taking all the

01:37:21 ◼   ► information that they have and putting it together in a way that makes sense.

01:37:24 ◼   ► They're adding a bunch of features that bring them to parity with competitors and

01:37:28 ◼   ► Apple intelligence powered stuff.

01:37:29 ◼   ► It's like great, like is something I'm tracking.

01:37:32 ◼   ► How is it going?

01:37:33 ◼   ► Give me information about that, draw pieces of information together show me them in

01:37:38 ◼   ► new ways.

01:37:39 ◼   ► Like I am very keen to try this out and see how it compares

01:37:42 ◼   ► to apps that I use, like Athletic, which I think does a really good

01:37:45 ◼   ► job of this stuff.

01:37:47 ◼   ► Um and I and I wonder how it will compare.

01:37:50 ◼   ► Like I I think this is really I think this is really good.

01:37:53 ◼   ► And I you know, I I moved from uh I was using a whoop

01:37:56 ◼   ► band and I went to athletic 'cause I felt like Whoop was way too

01:37:59 ◼   ► athlete focused.

01:38:00 ◼   ► Athletic is kind of for everyone and I expect Apple's health app will be

01:38:05 ◼   ► even more so uh in that regard.

01:38:08 ◼   ► So very interesting, I think the stuff they're doing.

01:38:11 ◼   ► But that wasn't all.

01:38:12 ◼   ► I mean, okay.

01:38:14 ◼   ► No, no, no.

01:38:16 ◼   ► This is the this gets my vote for the most surprising and weirdest feature

01:38:24 ◼   ► of this entire event.

01:38:26 ◼   ► And they they they did a folding iPhone, people.

01:38:29 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:38:30 ◼   ► And yet.

01:38:32 ◼   ► They added a bunch of AI features to the Apple Watch.

01:38:35 ◼   ► Not surprising.

01:38:35 ◼   ► There's not surprising at all.

01:38:38 ◼   ► And they add sound recognition, which is a nice feature.

01:38:40 ◼   ► So that's on the watch even if your phone's not around.

01:38:42 ◼   ► If you can't hear or can't hear well and there's an alarm, it'll put

01:38:46 ◼   ► a thing on your watch that says I hear an alarm.

01:38:48 ◼   ► That's cool.

01:38:50 ◼   ► But they added live rewind

01:38:53 ◼   ► where if somebody says something and you missed it, it's like the Apple Watch

01:38:57 ◼   ► or sorry, Apple T V where you back up and they give you captions,

01:39:01 ◼   ► except in real life.

01:39:03 ◼   ► Um, but unless that person leaves, couldn't you just ask them to repeat themselves?

01:39:06 ◼   ► But instead you're like, No, no, no, I'm just gonna rewind on my and

01:39:08 ◼   ► look at my Apple Watch for 15 seconds.

01:39:11 ◼   ► Social awkwardness.

01:39:12 ◼   ► You know, I got it.

01:39:13 ◼   ► I got it.

01:39:14 ◼   ► I got it.

01:39:14 ◼   ► Social awkwardness.

01:39:16 ◼   ► But that means that it's it's recording and transcribing,

01:39:20 ◼   ► or it's recording a window temporarily in a in a secure area that is

01:39:24 ◼   ► not kept for 15 second buffer.

01:39:27 ◼   ► You're putting a 15 second buffer on your conversation.

01:39:29 ◼   ► So that's interesting.

01:39:30 ◼   ► But again,

01:39:32 ◼   ► that's not the weirdest part.

01:39:34 ◼   ► The weirdest part 15 seconds is not enough time, maybe.

01:39:37 ◼   ► Right?

01:39:37 ◼   ► Like like I agree.

01:39:39 ◼   ► If you actually want to make this useful, but you gotta start somewhere.

01:39:42 ◼   ► I agree.

01:39:43 ◼   ► But then there's Siri Recap.

01:39:45 ◼   ► Unbelievable.

01:39:45 ◼   ► Friends, Siri Recap is like a is like that pendant.

01:39:49 ◼   ► It's like it's like literally if you want.

01:39:54 ◼   ► Siri will listen on your Apple Watch to your whole conversation as you have

01:39:59 ◼   ► it and generate meeting notes.

01:40:01 ◼   ► It's a meeting it's meeting notes for life.

01:40:04 ◼   ► And yeah, they're like, Oh, oh, oh, it's always on.

01:40:06 ◼   ► It could well like no no, you can make it so it's only when

01:40:09 ◼   ► you're work and never never at night, or you could turn it on and

01:40:12 ◼   ► off from the control center.

01:40:13 ◼   ► Yes, that's

01:40:15 ◼   ► um and it and they they make a point of saying it can't be

01:40:18 ◼   ► recorded or stored, it doesn't speakers, it can't be accessed.

01:40:21 ◼   ► They're obviously taking this, transcribe throwing the audio data away, but transcribing it and

01:40:27 ◼   ► generating a document out of it.

01:40:28 ◼   ► Okay.

01:40:29 ◼   ► But still, I I did not expect Apple to just drop a feature like

01:40:35 ◼   ► this where it's hey, guess what?

01:40:37 ◼   ► Now you can do meeting notes for your entire life on your Apple Watch.

01:40:42 ◼   ► And just leave it on.

01:40:45 ◼   ► It's a bold strategy, Continent.

01:40:48 ◼   ► Yeah, let's see how it works out for him.

01:40:50 ◼   ► Now look, I'm gonna say I am very intrigued to try this.

01:40:54 ◼   ► Like I because I like really want to see what is Apple's version of

01:41:00 ◼   ► this kind of thing.

01:41:01 ◼   ► Like

01:41:03 ◼   ► What is it doing?

01:41:05 ◼   ► How does it really work?

01:41:07 ◼   ► You know

01:41:09 ◼   ► you could tell with the

01:41:12 ◼   ► the amount of of caveats that they give, right?

01:41:14 ◼   ► Yes.

01:41:15 ◼   ► That like You can turn it off and to any crypto folio, we don't

01:41:19 ◼   ► know anything.

01:41:19 ◼   ► It's like they know how people will react to this.

01:41:22 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:41:22 ◼   ► But I am fascinated by the fact that they've decided to make the Apple

01:41:27 ◼   ► Watch an AI wearable.

01:41:28 ◼   ► Like they've yeah, they've done it.

01:41:30 ◼   ► Like Like Okay.

01:41:31 ◼   ► Like I want to see

01:41:35 ◼   ► what on earth

01:41:38 ◼   ► this looks like.

01:41:41 ◼   ► So and they said it was the c the information is in the Siri

01:41:45 ◼   ► app, right?

01:41:46 ◼   ► I think.

01:41:47 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:41:47 ◼   ► Like it has like the recap is in the Siri app on your watching

01:41:51 ◼   ► phone.

01:41:51 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:41:52 ◼   ► I mean, this is one of these things it's like

01:41:56 ◼   ► gotta s just gotta see it, you know?

01:41:58 ◼   ► Like Yeah.

01:41:59 ◼   ► Gotta see it.

01:42:00 ◼   ► 'Cause yeah.

01:42:02 ◼   ► I understand on the face of it there are gonna be a lot of

01:42:04 ◼   ► people who are like, What on earth is that?

01:42:06 ◼   ► Where on I am like, I wanna see this.

01:42:09 ◼   ► Like what are you doing?

01:42:10 ◼   ► Like like yeah.

01:42:12 ◼   ► Fascinating thing to just throw out there.

01:42:15 ◼   ► I never would have imagined it in the way that they did it.

01:42:20 ◼   ► Like I imagine them doing something like this, not with the Apple Watch.

01:42:23 ◼   ► I don't know why but I don't think I would have expected the Apple

01:42:27 ◼   ► Watch as the place where we first see something like this.

01:42:30 ◼   ► But maybe it's a better device than the AirPods, right?

01:42:34 ◼   ► Like you you actually do have it on all the time, right?

01:42:38 ◼   ► Right.

01:42:39 ◼   ► Yep.

01:42:39 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:42:40 ◼   ► Really interesting.

01:42:41 ◼   ► Like I I don't really know what to make of it.

01:42:43 ◼   ► Uh apparently there's a secure exclave.

01:42:46 ◼   ► I I don't we have enclaves and exclaves.

01:42:49 ◼   ► I don't Yeah, yeah.

01:42:50 ◼   ► I don't know what that means.

01:42:51 ◼   ► What does that's not new, but they're they're they're different.

01:42:54 ◼   ► Yeah, they're different.

01:42:55 ◼   ► One's on the inside, one's on the outside.

01:42:57 ◼   ► Oh yeah.

01:42:58 ◼   ► You got it.

01:42:59 ◼   ► Okay, cool.

01:43:00 ◼   ► I don't I didn't get it.

01:43:01 ◼   ► Like I said the thing.

01:43:02 ◼   ► I don't really know what it means.

01:43:04 ◼   ► Uh but that's cool.

01:43:05 ◼   ► I'm pleased that that's a that's the thing.

01:43:07 ◼   ► Um

01:43:08 ◼   ► The Series twelve comes in gray, black, gold, and bronze aluminium, golden natural titanium,

01:43:16 ◼   ► white and blue ceramic.

01:43:19 ◼   ► I'm so happy.

01:43:20 ◼   ► Now the white ceramic is not as white as the previous ceramics.

01:43:26 ◼   ► It's kind of more maybe ivory colored.

01:43:31 ◼   ► I am very keen.

01:43:33 ◼   ► I have already ordered one.

01:43:34 ◼   ► Uh so There we go.

01:43:36 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:43:37 ◼   ► I can't wait.

01:43:38 ◼   ► I'm very excited about it.

01:43:39 ◼   ► Like it's the the watch that I want.

01:43:41 ◼   ► The one bummer.

01:43:43 ◼   ► So the original ceramic came with a white sport band with a ceramic pin

01:43:50 ◼   ► instead of the metal pin.

01:43:52 ◼   ► This one does not.

01:43:53 ◼   ► You just choose your band.

01:43:55 ◼   ► I think that's a shame.

01:43:56 ◼   ► Uh I I'm I'm sad about that.

01:43:58 ◼   ► I would like the ceramic pin.

01:44:01 ◼   ► Uh maybe I could try and find one on eBay or something.

01:44:03 ◼   ► Do you you don't still have your ceramic Apple Watch?

01:44:05 ◼   ► I sold it.

01:44:06 ◼   ► With band.

01:44:07 ◼   ► I sold it.

01:44:07 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:44:08 ◼   ► Alas.

01:44:08 ◼   ► And I wanted to keep the band, but that felt a bit mean to

01:44:10 ◼   ► the person buying it, you know?

01:44:12 ◼   ► It's like I'm gonna get rid of it.

01:44:14 ◼   ► So I will t see if I can try and find one, but uh

01:44:17 ◼   ► otherwise I'll just I'll just get by I mean to be honest, I I

01:44:20 ◼   ► I like other bands more than uh sport bands these days anyway.

01:44:24 ◼   ► So I have it but I'll probably use a different band.

01:44:27 ◼   ► Uh there's a lot of other band colours.

01:44:28 ◼   ► I want to see what they look like with that thing I'll I'll check

01:44:30 ◼   ► it out in an Apple store at some point.

01:44:32 ◼   ► Uh the Ultra Four has a larger battery, um, two day battery life, 18

01:44:38 ◼   ► hours on in workout mode, 45 hours uh in the extended workout mode.

01:44:43 ◼   ► Uh the Apple Watches, I think the prices have stayed the same.

01:44:47 ◼   ► I believe.

01:44:48 ◼   ► $3.99 and $7.99 to start.

01:44:51 ◼   ► Uh there were also AirPods.

01:44:53 ◼   ► I don't I don't know if you have much to say on that.

01:44:55 ◼   ► It's cool that now all AirPods do noise cancellation.

01:44:58 ◼   ► Right.

01:44:59 ◼   ► They they there's a new higher cost one, which is actually less of a

01:45:03 ◼   ► higher cost.

01:45:03 ◼   ► So they're 129 and 149.

01:45:05 ◼   ► I think they used to be 129 and N179.

01:45:10 ◼   ► And they all do ANC.

01:45:12 ◼   ► The high-end one is uh volume adjustment, volume adjustment on the stems, which the

01:45:19 ◼   ► first time on the non-pro AirPods.

01:45:21 ◼   ► Battery life is better

01:45:24 ◼   ► and um has the wireless charging case.

01:45:27 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:45:28 ◼   ► But um but you can get A and C even on the 129 AirPods

01:45:31 ◼   ► now.

01:45:31 ◼   ► And I mean they said it's fifty percent better at noise reduction, which is

01:45:35 ◼   ► great because that's the whole point of having noise cancellation on and AirPods.

01:45:41 ◼   ► It's nice 'cause there are now more options, right?

01:45:43 ◼   ► And and great.

01:45:45 ◼   ► Right?

01:45:45 ◼   ► Like it's like a thing.

01:45:46 ◼   ► And and the AirPods thing was done in the train station in LA and

01:45:50 ◼   ► when I was talking about extras earlier, there's a ticket kiosk and they're people

01:45:54 ◼   ► lined up to sell to buy tickets and the person who's selling them the

01:45:58 ◼   ► tickets looks like they're out of a like a movie from the forties.

01:46:02 ◼   ► It's like a guy with a hat and a like a little uniform.

01:46:05 ◼   ► Interesting.

01:46:06 ◼   ► And I thought that was hilarious.

01:46:08 ◼   ► Huh.

01:46:09 ◼   ► Okay.

01:46:10 ◼   ► Just details.

01:46:11 ◼   ► I love I love that they have all of these extras in these scenes.

01:46:14 ◼   ► It's It did it felt a little bit more alive.

01:46:17 ◼   ► Yep.

01:46:18 ◼   ► So that's it.

01:46:20 ◼   ► Is that all?

01:46:21 ◼   ► I think that's all.

01:46:23 ◼   ► Obviously there's gonna be more over the next couple of weeks.

01:46:27 ◼   ► September eighteenth release for everything basically except the duo.

01:46:32 ◼   ► IPhone Duo, which would be an October thing.

01:46:34 ◼   ► Which you're you're right.

01:46:35 ◼   ► From a I want to see it now, I'm disappointed.

01:46:38 ◼   ► From a we have more time to process the other products and then also

01:46:42 ◼   ► think about and learn about the iPhone Duo it is nice to have that

01:46:45 ◼   ► time and it not be a total avalanche in the next, you know, week

01:46:50 ◼   ► and a half.

01:46:50 ◼   ► So that's And I I think it's a kindness to developers too.

01:46:54 ◼   ► Um also true.

01:46:55 ◼   ► Because this is a big UI change.

01:46:57 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:46:58 ◼   ► Because, you know, people were like, Oh, we'll just prepare for the way they're

01:47:01 ◼   ► showing us with the screen mirroring.

01:47:03 ◼   ► It's like, yes, but what if also all of these buttons move?

01:47:06 ◼   ► It's like, ah, yeah.

01:47:07 ◼   ► Okay.

01:47:08 ◼   ► So I uh I'm I'm pleased that there is a little bit more time,

01:47:11 ◼   ► right?

01:47:11 ◼   ► Like people can get Their app submitted for twenty seven and then they can

01:47:15 ◼   ► start working on this uh as well.

01:47:18 ◼   ► So but it's gonna be interesting to see how that all unfolds, pun intended.

01:47:22 ◼   ► Uh before we

01:47:24 ◼   ► breaking news, breaking news breaking news, breaking news.

01:47:26 ◼   ► Yep.

01:47:27 ◼   ► It's possible that the sand sport band comes with a ceramic band.

01:47:32 ◼   ► Oh.

01:47:33 ◼   ► This this just in from Piotr in the chat.

01:47:36 ◼   ► It's possible.

01:47:37 ◼   ► That's the one I ordered.

01:47:39 ◼   ► Oh.

01:47:40 ◼   ► Because that's the best looking band combination.

01:47:42 ◼   ► Sandsport band.

01:47:43 ◼   ► Sandsport band.

01:47:44 ◼   ► Well, report back.

01:47:45 ◼   ► You can be our report back.

01:47:47 ◼   ► Ceramic watch correspondent here.

01:47:49 ◼   ► I mean, I'll say it doesn't say that like if that is the case,

01:47:52 ◼   ► I don't I didn't find anywhere where it said it.

01:47:55 ◼   ► Um Maybe it's color matched at least.

01:47:58 ◼   ► Yeah, I mean or it could just be doing a reflection.

01:48:01 ◼   ► Like you know, it's like it's hard to know.

01:48:04 ◼   ► Report back.

01:48:05 ◼   ► I mean I will September eighteenth.

01:48:06 ◼   ► I absolutely will report back.

01:48:08 ◼   ► Uh very excited.

01:48:10 ◼   ► Please do.

01:48:10 ◼   ► Before we go, I want to mention uh thank you so much to everybody

01:48:14 ◼   ► that's reached out about Designed in California.

01:48:16 ◼   ► Um I cannot remember a time uh where I got so many positive messages

01:48:21 ◼   ► about a new project.

01:48:22 ◼   ► It really has been wonderful.

01:48:25 ◼   ► Um it I think the greatest uh uh series of like of compliments that

01:48:30 ◼   ► we have received is members who didn't want to listen to all of it

01:48:34 ◼   ► but did.

01:48:35 ◼   ► Uh and so people have listened to the entire series already if they're a

01:48:38 ◼   ► member of back the kickstart or signed up otherwise.

01:48:41 ◼   ► And so I'm really pleased about that.

01:48:43 ◼   ► Now this week's episode, which is already out, we released it uh a day

01:48:46 ◼   ► early because of the Apple event this year, 'cause uh this week, sorry, 'cause

01:48:49 ◼   ► the the show will be coming out on Wednesdays.

01:48:51 ◼   ► Um it sees the entrance of Jean Louis Gasset to the story that we're

01:48:56 ◼   ► telling of Apple's macOS crisis, leading to the potential acquisition of Gas.

01:49:01 ◼   ► A's company B.

01:49:02 ◼   ► So you can check that out on designed in California at relay.fm slash designed.

01:49:07 ◼   ► Uh we haven't mentioned this, I don't think, on the show yet so I'm

01:49:12 ◼   ► There is a YouTube version of the show, full video, wonderful edit.

01:49:17 ◼   ► Um matches the audio edit exactly.

01:49:20 ◼   ► So that's great.

01:49:21 ◼   ► And we also have an Instagram account where I'm sharing some clips and behind

01:49:25 ◼   ► the scenes stuff and all those kinds of things.

01:49:26 ◼   ► Both of these, the usernames, are designed in CA.

01:49:30 ◼   ► Um, which reads designed Inca if you which is how I read it in

01:49:35 ◼   ► my head a lot, but is designed in CA.

01:49:38 ◼   ► Uh so if you wanna uh go you wanna uh follow along there you

01:50:12 ◼   ► So play it relief.
