528: Here's My Child Criminal

00:00:00   [Music]

00:00:08   From Relay, this is Upgrade Episode 528 for September 9th 2024. Today's show is brought to you by Ooni Pizza Ovens. Delete me and Backblaze.

00:00:19   My name is Mike Hurley and I had the pleasure of being joined by Jason Snell. Hello, Jason Snell.

00:00:24   Hello, Mike Hurley. How are you?

00:00:27   I am very good, my friend. It's Apple Event Day.

00:00:30   It's a big day. Big day. Big day.

00:00:33   We're fresh off. You're fresh off just returning from Apple Park.

00:00:36   I got out of the car and now I'm here. That's how that works. I go straight from car to podcast. From Apple Event to car to podcast.

00:00:44   And we've barely spoken about anything from today. So I actually, my snort talk question comes from me again today.

00:00:52   I tend to like own these seasons because I just want to ask you things. Vibes?

00:00:59   About being at the event? About the event?

00:01:04   I asked the question vibes. However you want to answer that question.

00:01:08   I said vibes, sir. I said vibes.

00:01:10   Sir, I said good vibes.

00:01:12   Yes, I think all the information you need is in the question. Vibes. Saw a bunch of people. That was nice.

00:01:21   It's a funny event. I feel like the event is actually like a whole bunch of international media and video influencers and things who are kind of like,

00:01:29   nobody knows them and they don't know anybody. And then there's like those of us who know each other who are kind of like on the outside.

00:01:35   So it's like, hey, it's John Gruber. Hey, there's Marques Brownlee. Hey, there's iJustine.

00:01:39   Marques Brownlee who got off a flight from Australia.

00:01:42   From Australia. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, but he was there because he was at the Ultimate Disc World Cup.

00:01:48   He won. I said this to Stephen. Man cannot be cooler. Not only did he win a gold medal for Team USA, he scored the winning point.

00:01:57   Oh man, look at that. Now he's a star. He's a star in all things, all faces.

00:02:01   So those people, some people I see, relatives of friends of the show who I'm not going to mention who, but you know who it is probably.

00:02:11   Anyway, good stuff. And then a beautiful venue. They have that new venue that they depress us about.

00:02:17   I didn't see it. I couldn't even see where it was. It's like through the trees or something.

00:02:21   There's this observatory something. It's like a bunker. I don't know. I didn't see it.

00:02:26   And then I, so it's weird, right? So I was sitting next to somebody who is like had a badly leaking headphone in their ear doing a simultaneous translation of the video.

00:02:36   That was kind of unpleasant. But that is also the iPhone event in a nutshell, which is a lot of people from all over the world.

00:02:44   Because, and I've said this before, I'm going to say it again because I feel like I want to break out of our little space of people who care about Apple.

00:02:53   For us, the iPhone is important, but so are all sorts of other things. For the world, the iPhone is super, super important and nothing else Apple does is even close to as important.

00:03:02   So this is a totally different vibe as an event because the iPhone is so important. So the people there were very different.

00:03:08   Hands-on area afterward, kind of wild because you got to, like I was standing behind a guy who literally spent five minutes taking iPhone photos of the iPhone in his hands.

00:03:19   And I'm sitting there, I've done that. I've been there. And I'm sitting there thinking, I know this is your job, sir.

00:03:23   But I also know that none of your photos are going to be any good. They're all going to be crappy photos.

00:03:27   And I came to the conclusion that like after a certain point, just use Apple's photos because your photos are bad.

00:03:33   Your photos are really badly lit and ugly and no one wants to see your hand. I did ask one of the people there if the people who are doing the hands-on area are like, they get manicures beforehand and all that.

00:03:47   Because they also have them be hand models for all the shots. And I thought you should probably, if you're Apple, I would make sure that everybody who's going to be holding a phone in front of a media person have like a manicure.

00:03:59   If they're going to enforce that they have to hold it, you know what I mean?

00:04:04   Right. I mean, men or women, it doesn't matter. However, the woman I was talking to was like, "Yeah, I thought it was a good idea. That's why I got the teal because I like the teal matching the teal iPhone."

00:04:17   I was like, "Oh, that's very smart." Yeah, yeah. Pro tip there. So anyway, Vibes, it's an iPhone event. It's unlike any other event.

00:04:26   I did get a chance to talk to a bunch of people, talk to the product manager for Photos and Camera who is in the event. I got to talk to her afterward. I've talked to her before because I've talked to her about the Photos app a lot.

00:04:37   You know, ran into a bunch of other interesting people. Most importantly though, I was standing talking to John Gruber.

00:04:47   Yeah. And John Turnus walked up and said, "Hi, John. Hi, Jason." And I thought, "John Turnus knows who I am."

00:04:54   That was some thorough briefing. Was he walking around with an earpiece in?

00:04:58   It was just him. I got to be honest. Actually, one of the most charming things about this because, you know, they're not on stage anymore. It's just a video event.

00:05:05   One of the most charming things about this is I don't think he had shaved in a day or two. He was dressed super cash. He was no different than any other random person who would walk up to me and say, "Hi," at an Apple event.

00:05:21   And not the guy where Mark Gurman's like, "He's going to be the next CEO." Not like that at all. Just super casual. And I got to hear, I'm not going to retell the whole story, but apparently it happened not too long ago that John Gruber was looking out his window of his home in Philadelphia and saw John Turnus literally walking down the sidewalk.

00:05:38   He drove over to John's house.

00:05:40   Well, this is the thing is that it's an amazing coincidence and completely coincidental. And I'm sitting there thinking, "Or is that what they want you to think?"

00:05:47   They just want you to know they can see you. They want you to know. Turnus wants you to know he knows your name and also he's not far away.

00:05:56   So John Turnus walks down the sidewalk. The next step is that Greg Joswiak gets out of a cab and then an open top double-decker bus, tour bus goes by and I think Phil Schiller is driving it. I'm sure it's all a coincidence, John. I'm sure it's all a coincidence.

00:06:14   If you would like to send in a question for us to open a future episode of the show, just go to UpgradeFeedback.com and you can send it in.

00:06:21   Before we talk about the draft results, I want to take a moment to talk about our campaign with our friends over at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which we do every year, which we're very proud of.

00:06:34   And as a community, we have not only raised $160,000 nearly for this year, over the last five years we have surpassed $3 million raised.

00:06:46   We join with St. Jude every year during Chartered Cancer Awareness Month and the Relay community has come together once again to show why it's the best around.

00:06:55   And we do it-

00:06:56   Money, money, money, money, who raises all the money?

00:07:00   We do. And it's for St. Jude.

00:07:03   So look, why do we do this?

00:07:06   Because St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is an incredible place. It saved the life of Stephen Hackett's son and it saved the life of probably countless others.

00:07:15   Because it's not just the kids that are treated at St. Jude, it is also the research that is shared worldwide, which is developed at St. Jude and given for free to the world.

00:07:25   I want to tell you a little bit about something that goes on on the campus, though.

00:07:28   One of the most important parts of being a patient at St. Jude is having space to not be a patient and just be a kid.

00:07:37   Last year, St. Jude opened the Family Commons.

00:07:40   This is a 45,000 square foot space that is just for families.

00:07:44   It's a treatment and clinical staff free floor.

00:07:47   It is a place for families to rest and reconnect between appointments.

00:07:51   This is on campus at the hospital.

00:07:53   It is a place where the families don't have to be around all of the treatment and all of the medical stuff that they're around.

00:07:59   They can just be around each other.

00:08:01   It's kind of a town hall where families can gather to get a coffee and kids can be creative in an onsite recording studio, an art room and a maker space that has all of the tools and technology like 3D printers for hands on learning and venting.

00:08:14   There are play areas, private rooms to rest, take a nap, science lab and a library, tech support and childcare.

00:08:21   The space came about after feedback from the parents of St. Jude, the patients, the parents of the patients, who were looking for a space on campus where they as a family could get some downtime together between the clinical appointments and have that sense of normalcy.

00:08:34   This is just one of the many incredible things that this place provides.

00:08:38   But to provide this for these children, they need your donations.

00:08:43   The Relay community has adopted this campaign as its own over the last five years and it's very easy for you to get involved yourself.

00:08:50   If you go to stjude.org/relay you can register to create your own fundraiser.

00:08:54   You can join us in raising money for St. Jude.

00:08:56   After you sign up, share your fundraiser with your friends, your family and spread the word for this amazing mission.

00:09:01   You can increase the amount of impact that you can have for the kids of St. Jude by signing up for a fundraiser of your own.

00:09:07   People who sign up and host their own fundraisers can earn some limited edition incentives.

00:09:12   Some of them are so good.

00:09:13   They post on our socials in the Discord today.

00:09:15   The desk mat that we have for this year, which is listed there, is incredible.

00:09:19   There's also challenge coins and there's also a hat and a cup with Relay and St. Jude branding on it.

00:09:25   Like super cool stuff that's available to you.

00:09:28   Go to stjude.org/relay and learn more.

00:09:30   When we rally for a common cause, we become more than a community, but we become beacons of hope for all.

00:09:36   And that is why we are asking all of you to join Relay and St. Jude this September for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

00:09:42   Together we can help cure childhood cancer.

00:09:44   Go to stjude.org/relay to donate today.

00:09:48   Please go stjude.org/relay.

00:09:50   Should we do the draft results, Jason Snell?

00:09:55   Yes, yes.

00:09:56   We have agreed prior to airing.

00:09:59   Yeah.

00:09:59   In fact, I dropped some of my things that I would have been a stickler on because it doesn't matter.

00:10:03   Yeah.

00:10:04   Because the best I could do is come up with a 7-7 score with you getting the over and the tiebreaker.

00:10:08   Yeah.

00:10:09   So congratulations.

00:10:10   I will turn my, uh, my, my pennant after the show.

00:10:15   Me too.

00:10:15   Now look at that.

00:10:16   I just got to say for a second.

00:10:17   We can go through this, but Jason, I lost it once.

00:10:20   Took it right back.

00:10:21   You know, for the people that write in and they say it's impossible for someone to win if they don't get to pick first.

00:10:27   Well, I just proved it, didn't I?

00:10:29   It is.

00:10:29   You know what I'm saying?

00:10:30   It is.

00:10:31   And it's cause, it's cause you killed me on the other picks.

00:10:33   I really blew it on the other picks.

00:10:34   That's what got me.

00:10:35   Yeah.

00:10:35   Yeah.

00:10:36   So, uh, let's run through yours real quick.

00:10:38   There was a faster A series chip, the capture button, which is called the camera, the camera capture.

00:10:45   What is the name?

00:10:46   I've read it a thousand times today and like camera control.

00:10:49   I cannot get that in my head.

00:10:51   The capture button, there's multiple functions.

00:10:54   Yep.

00:10:55   Apple intelligence features given a date more specific than quote this fall.

00:11:00   October baby.

00:11:02   Yep.

00:11:02   This one is first coming.

00:11:03   And then you had increased screen brightness, which none of the iPhones got.

00:11:07   2000 nits.

00:11:08   I was very surprised about that.

00:11:09   I was too.

00:11:10   An Apple watch gets a larger screen.

00:11:12   Yep.

00:11:13   You got that.

00:11:14   Apple watches are a new physical size.

00:11:16   You got that.

00:11:17   Even though they didn't say it at all.

00:11:19   We'll get to it.

00:11:21   Lots of very weird detail today, which I'm fascinated to talk about new AirPods, non pro

00:11:28   or max introduced.

00:11:29   You got that, but there was no specific Mac OS release date set.

00:11:32   It's September 16th, September 16th.

00:11:35   It wasn't in the video.

00:11:37   Neither did they say for iOS either, which September 16th wild, wild.

00:11:42   Well, it's not in the video.

00:11:43   Apple TV, trust trailer, TV plus trailer or promo.

00:11:46   They did not show any, which is also weird.

00:11:48   I do think.

00:11:49   Yeah.

00:11:50   And then we go over to me, profiles get larger screens, which I did.

00:11:54   They did five times optical zoom on both phones is true.

00:11:57   Ultra wide camera improvements is true.

00:11:59   Vertical camera lens on the iPhone 16 line.

00:12:03   Yep.

00:12:04   Then we have Apple mentions Ram or memory increases for the iPhone line now.

00:12:08   All right.

00:12:08   So this one you didn't get because they don't mention memory increases.

00:12:13   They increase the memory bandwidth, but they didn't specifically mention the memory increase,

00:12:17   but we're going to come back to this because it's going to get you a point a little later

00:12:21   on, but not here.

00:12:22   We'll come back to that in a second.

00:12:23   So I can do a slight victory lap on it.

00:12:26   New watch face.

00:12:26   There's two of them, I think three of them actually, at least, but we saw three in the

00:12:31   presentation.

00:12:32   So yeah, Apple watch se did not get updated though.

00:12:35   So I don't get that point, which is wild specific iOS.

00:12:37   I've had release date set.

00:12:39   No, new AirPods max introduced.

00:12:42   I got that and vision pro mentioned in his right.

00:12:45   I'll just mention, I did actually ask the AirPods product manager about the AirPods

00:12:51   max.

00:12:52   And I said, how are you referring to the AirPods max?

00:12:54   Because is it just that they're new colors and they have a USB-C or do they do other

00:13:00   things?

00:13:00   And he said, well, there's also the enhancement where you can do personal spatialized spatial

00:13:07   audio.

00:13:08   And like with them updating the AirPods pro and not calling it a new model, but adding

00:13:14   new features when they added the USB-C case where they're like, oh, also on the vision

00:13:18   pro, it's got reduced latency.

00:13:19   This is another example of a stealth AirPods update.

00:13:25   Barely one.

00:13:26   But I would say it's absolutely a new model because of that.

00:13:31   I might've quibbled, but there's no, the spatial, personalized spatial audio puts it

00:13:37   across the line for me and vision pro.

00:13:39   Yes.

00:13:40   Vision pro mentioned because they did spatial capture.

00:13:43   I was so nervous during that moment because he kept talking and talking and talking and

00:13:48   not saying it.

00:13:49   I'm like, say it, say the words.

00:13:51   And he said the words.

00:13:52   So, and then he said the words.

00:13:53   Yeah.

00:13:53   Yeah.

00:13:54   He got there.

00:13:54   He got there.

00:13:55   And I actually, at that moment, turned to underscore who came over to watch me today

00:14:00   and said, I think that just won me the draft.

00:14:01   Yeah.

00:14:02   Yeah.

00:14:02   Um, the St. Jude challenge was a failure.

00:14:06   Ultimately it was, it was a failure.

00:14:08   We made it too hard.

00:14:09   We need to make it a lot easier.

00:14:11   Cause we had like next generation Siri.

00:14:13   They haven't said that before.

00:14:14   They didn't say it.

00:14:14   They didn't mention the Emmy awards.

00:14:16   They didn't announce anything with Google Gemini and they didn't describe anything in

00:14:19   this as blow away, which shame on them, but you are going to win the St. Jude challenge

00:14:24   and get three points for the Mike versus Steven as well.

00:14:27   And one point for the draft, because your choice here was Ram or memory in referring

00:14:32   to the iPhone.

00:14:33   And unlike your draft pick, which was memory increases here, you just said they're going

00:14:37   to refer to the memory or Ram on the iPhone.

00:14:40   And they did because they extolled the virtues of these faster, wider memory bandwidth, which

00:14:47   is one of the most boring things, but it doesn't matter.

00:14:50   You get it.

00:14:51   So with that, I am also brought level with Steven on the Mike versus Steven points.

00:14:56   We're now I'm 45 each, which is great.

00:14:59   Wonderful.

00:15:00   So it's 30 points that I get for that in the St. Jude Mike versus Steven, but in the St.

00:15:06   Jude challenge, I bet three on it, which gets converted to 30.

00:15:08   The one thing I say, like, while they did not go as heavy as I thought, honestly, I

00:15:14   think it is remarkable that they mentioned memory in reference to the iPhone, no matter

00:15:19   how they mentioned it.

00:15:20   But of course they did it in terms of chip of their chip prowess.

00:15:23   Of course they did.

00:15:24   Yes.

00:15:24   And they did also refer to it in like the way the spirit of what I was talking about

00:15:31   was in there, which is they say that they need this to store large models and the bandwidth

00:15:36   to access them quickly, which is why I thought they will talk about Ram, but they couldn't

00:15:41   bring it upon themselves to say Ram.

00:15:43   No, but they couldn't do it.

00:15:45   Couldn't do it.

00:15:46   So there we go.

00:15:48   I feel pretty pleased about winning the draft.

00:15:50   I'm not going to lie.

00:15:50   Yeah.

00:15:52   Yeah.

00:15:53   I, uh, I thought I, I thought I probably had this one, but it all fell apart in the, uh,

00:15:57   I did what I always do, which is I, uh, the day of the event, I sit with all of the rumors

00:16:04   that we've gotten since we recorded, which usually is at least one more Mark Gorman report,

00:16:08   which there was.

00:16:09   And I kind of re like grade it all for myself.

00:16:15   And I graded you as winning this morning.

00:16:18   And then surprises happened.

00:16:22   Cause I, I thought you were going to get a full sweep at 10.

00:16:25   That's what I thought was going to happen.

00:16:28   I, um, I thought the Apple TV one was questionable.

00:16:31   I'm surprised that the screens didn't get any brighter and I am surprised, uh, that

00:16:37   they didn't mention the release dates, although we would have canceled each other out there.

00:16:40   So yeah, I thought you would have got the full sweep.

00:16:42   Yep.

00:16:43   Um, I want to talk about a couple of overall thoughts about this event before we start

00:16:50   digging into the products.

00:16:52   And like, so again, this is just me as a, as a, as a viewer, right.

00:16:56   And like, I don't have a context for stuff.

00:16:58   I haven't seen products, et cetera, but there was, there were two things that really stuck

00:17:03   out to me.

00:17:04   One was a lot of Apple intelligence and two was that this event felt like it was dragging

00:17:10   in a few places.

00:17:11   The Apple intelligence thing was, is interesting to me because they, it was part of every product

00:17:17   that they could talk about it.

00:17:18   Like, especially the phones really is part of the fun part.

00:17:20   And it's in all of the ads and stuff that they're showing, which is super interesting

00:17:25   to me because a lot of the features that they have in the ads and in like the promo videos,

00:17:30   they're nebulous in both quality and timeline.

00:17:33   Like, and like they're even talking about the personal context.

00:17:37   We don't know honestly, like there is a scenario where the, I genuinely believe is possible

00:17:43   that the personal context powered Siri first appears after the iPhone 17 is shipped.

00:17:49   - Yeah, I don't think so.

00:17:51   I think that that is an early next year thing.

00:17:53   I think they talked about October for the first round in December for a second round

00:17:58   and then there's more coming.

00:17:59   So I think they've got a plan to every couple of months ship a new set of features as a

00:18:05   part of their OS plan.

00:18:06   - Possibly, but they haven't given us that information, right.

00:18:09   So like, maybe I've gone a bit far in there, but like I could imagine we get up to

00:18:13   towards WWDC time before even that begins to start before we get everything.

00:18:18   - I think everything that they've announced at WWDC will ship before WWDC next year.

00:18:25   And I think probably a lot, most of it will ship.

00:18:27   - But nevertheless, take out my weird timeline

00:18:31   'cause we're going down a road that we don't need to.

00:18:33   It is really peculiar, like odd in terms of Apple's marketing to so heavily promote

00:18:43   features that we don't even have a date for.

00:18:46   Like a lot of the ads that they're showing for like the iPhone 16 or whatever, it was

00:18:52   like that one of the people in a train station never really is using Apple intelligence.

00:18:55   And like only one of the demos was gonna be any of those features available that we know

00:19:02   of in the next couple of months.

00:19:03   - In October.

00:19:05   - I just think that's really, I don't know, it was interesting and a little strange, but

00:19:10   I guess that's just the position they found themselves in and that's just the way it's

00:19:13   gonna be for this cycle.

00:19:15   And then the dragging, like I think part of my feeling about this event, which was really

00:19:22   weird, which was how much they were talking about things we either already knew about,

00:19:29   which I understand that happens always, but also like small updates to existing products.

00:19:36   - Yeah, I have a theory about this, but you're right.

00:19:39   They did a whole section about the Apple Watch Ultra 2, which is not new.

00:19:43   They did a new color and new bands.

00:19:46   They did a whole thing about the AirPods Pro 2, which is a new software feature, but not

00:19:51   new hardware.

00:19:52   - But they also spent time talking about that product and what it already does as well as

00:19:58   adding on those new interesting things.

00:20:01   - Right, well, and they extolled the virtues of the features that they added to the AirPods

00:20:04   Pro last year, but are going to now be in the AirPods.

00:20:08   And they talked about them again too.

00:20:10   And then of course the AirPods Max, which is very weird because they acted really in

00:20:15   that section, they acted like it was new and it's basically not other than like very, some

00:20:19   very minor changes.

00:20:20   It's all this time has passed and there's very little that's new about it.

00:20:24   So I agree.

00:20:25   It's always gonna be a challenge.

00:20:28   I think my counter would be that they wanted to place these products in the context.

00:20:33   Like I think it's really good that they mentioned the AirPods Pro because not only do they have

00:20:38   an announcement, which is the hearing aid stuff, which is very interesting, but also

00:20:42   that way you can see the whole stretch of the AirPods product line.

00:20:45   And I think that it gets weird when you don't talk about one of the key parts of the product

00:20:52   line, in fact, the most popular part.

00:20:54   So putting it in that context, I get, but I can also get that if you're looking for the

00:20:57   new, they had a lot of the old, the thing that I noticed was the vagueness.

00:21:00   There's a lot of vagueness in these announcements.

00:21:03   They're there as if they weren't sure, like some of it was as if they weren't sure.

00:21:09   I mean, I'm sure they record maybe alternate versions just in case things change, but it

00:21:14   felt like they were either not sure or they were not willing to put a definitive item

00:21:22   on it when they built the video.

00:21:24   So the one that really struck me, I mean, first off, they didn't mention watch sizes.

00:21:29   They didn't say, here are the names of the millimeters of the two sizes.

00:21:34   They never referenced there were two at all.

00:21:38   There were two.

00:21:39   Yeah.

00:21:39   I had somebody come up and say, did they eliminate the smaller watch?

00:21:41   And it's like, well, no, they're both right here in front of us.

00:21:44   But it was a real question.

00:21:46   It wasn't until I could reload the newsroom after the event to find out there was a small

00:21:53   one.

00:21:53   It was really, really weird.

00:21:56   And the one that I thought that I noticed that I thought was odd is while making superlative

00:22:02   claims, longest iPhone battery life ever.

00:22:06   They didn't say what the battery life was.

00:22:10   Yeah.

00:22:11   That's wild, right?

00:22:13   Like it's the longest ever.

00:22:14   It's the best ever.

00:22:15   And that is jumps like, okay, well, you're going to tell us?

00:22:21   No.

00:22:22   Okay then fair enough.

00:22:24   Because stuff like that.

00:22:24   I mean, we'll get into that because I've done the digging.

00:22:27   So I have numbers for you later in the episode, but they are significant.

00:22:31   So it's like, usually you say something like, there's like 10 minutes more.

00:22:34   And again, it was like, I think, I don't know, even though if they gave, they didn't really

00:22:39   talk about measurements of any kind, like the weight of the watches and all this kind

00:22:43   of stuff.

00:22:44   Like just, I say they gave like 10%, I think they gave on some of those.

00:22:48   Watch display ever.

00:22:50   It was odd.

00:22:52   Yeah.

00:22:52   It was an odd, it was.

00:22:53   I thought like for a, for a presentation that included a discussion of improved memory bandwidth,

00:23:00   it was interesting that a lot of things they did, they did say 9.7 millimeters for the

00:23:05   thinness of it.

00:23:06   So they did throw that in there, but a lot of this stuff was sort of like, oh, it's the

00:23:10   biggest ever.

00:23:10   It's the thinnest ever.

00:23:11   It's the longest ever with no detail, which I just found very weird for a video where

00:23:16   you could boast about the detail.

00:23:17   And instead they're like, man, you know, look it up on the internet.

00:23:20   Detailed shmeetail.

00:23:22   Yeah, I guess so.

00:23:23   This episode is brought to you by Ooni Pizza Ovens.

00:23:27   Ooni is the world's number one pizza oven company, letting you make restaurant quality

00:23:31   pizza in your very own home.

00:23:32   Ooni Pizza Ovens can reach up to 950 degrees Fahrenheit cooking pizza in as little as 60

00:23:39   seconds.

00:23:40   The high temperature that an Ooni oven will achieve is what makes the pizza that you'll

00:23:44   cook in an Ooni Pizza Oven stand out from what you'll cook in a regular home oven.

00:23:49   They're also incredibly quick to heat up.

00:23:51   You'll be ready to go from turning it on to the heat being achieved that you need that

00:23:54   950 degrees in just 20 minutes, which is enough time to get your toppings ready.

00:23:58   Start getting your dough ready so you can get your first pizza on the go.

00:24:02   Whether you love authentic wood-fired flavor, the convenience of cooking with gas, the ability

00:24:09   to choose whether you want to cook with wood, charcoal or gas, or even electricity, there

00:24:14   is an Ooni oven that fits your needs and lifestyle.

00:24:17   Ooni have ovens like the Wood Pellet Fueled Fire of 12 and the Multi Fueled Karoo 12G

00:24:24   for maximum portability.

00:24:25   It's made for those who like cooking on the go, camping and getting out into the wilderness.

00:24:30   But if you want the convenience of gas and also love the flavor of wood-fired cooking,

00:24:34   you should check out Ooni's Karoo line because you can use wood or charcoal right out of

00:24:38   the box or get the optional gas burner for cooking flexibility.

00:24:42   They also now have an electric oven, the Vault 12, where you can make pizza both indoors

00:24:47   and outdoors, which I have this oven and I love that.

00:24:49   I love that I have that flexibility because, you know, weather in the UK, not always reliable

00:24:56   no matter what the season.

00:24:57   And so I love that if we decided we want to have a pizza weekend, we don't need to hope

00:25:01   that the weather's good to go outside to make it because we can make it inside or outside

00:25:04   whatever we choose.

00:25:05   And the pizza that we make in our Ooni ovens tastes great.

00:25:08   But I also just really enjoy the process.

00:25:10   I just think it's a lot of fun.

00:25:12   It's a nice family activity.

00:25:13   It's fantastic.

00:25:14   But Ooni ovens are definitely more than just pizza too.

00:25:17   You can cook anything you can cook in an oven.

00:25:19   You can cook in an Ooni pizza oven.

00:25:20   And they have in their wonderful app, they have recommendations and recipes for all kinds

00:25:25   of food.

00:25:26   So you can see that even like desserts and stuff like that.

00:25:28   Ooni pizza ovens start from just $299 of free shipping to the US, UK and EU.

00:25:34   They also make cast iron cookware, pizza peels, thermometers and loads of other accessories

00:25:39   to help you level up your cooking experiences.

00:25:42   Listeners to this show can get 10% off their purchase of an Ooni pizza oven.

00:25:56   home.

00:25:57   That is Ooni.com and use the code upgrade 2024 and you'll get 10% off.

00:26:02   Our thanks to Ooni pizza ovens for their support of this show.

00:26:04   Let's talk about the iPhone 16 to begin.

00:26:09   Now of course, as always, there'll be some features that are on this phone and some features

00:26:14   that are on the pro phone and some that mix and match around.

00:26:17   So we'll get into a different detail, different spots, but both of these phones, Apple references

00:26:23   being designed ground up for Apple intelligence, which is a great way of saying we didn't know

00:26:30   we were going to be doing this when we were designing the last one.

00:26:34   And with that comes the A18, which is very powerful in a bunch of ways.

00:26:38   Yes, it's very much in the generation of the M4.

00:26:41   It's the second generation three nanometer process and the way they describe, you know,

00:26:46   they're using the M4 cores and it is the phone version of the M4.

00:26:51   Yeah.

00:26:51   The colors, now you can tell me about this, from the imagery on the website, they look

00:26:57   incredibly saturated.

00:26:59   We have ultramarine, teal, pink and white and black.

00:27:02   How did they look to you?

00:27:03   I can't really comment on pink because I'm bad at pink.

00:27:05   You know this about me.

00:27:07   I can comment on ultramarine and teal and they look great.

00:27:11   That ultramarine is this blue.

00:27:13   It's great.

00:27:15   It looks so good.

00:27:16   I love it.

00:27:17   It's beautiful.

00:27:18   The ultramarine is great and the teal, you know, if you like something that's more green,

00:27:24   it's they got it for you.

00:27:25   They got it.

00:27:26   They got a bluey and a greeny and then apparently a pinky, but again, not my best.

00:27:30   And then a white and black.

00:27:31   It looks very, very good pink.

00:27:33   It looks like honestly, it looks like barbie pink, right? Like that very, very bright hot

00:27:38   pink is how it looks.

00:27:40   It also, I think looks really good.

00:27:41   These colors, once again, they all look really good.

00:27:46   Real colors are back on the iPhone after a little bit of an absence.

00:27:49   Of course, not on the pro models at all, really, but here they are.

00:27:54   And that ultramarine is a winner.

00:27:55   It's really good.

00:27:56   And on Apple's website with each of the colors, they have a home screen tint that wallpaper

00:28:01   that matches.

00:28:02   I'm sure they do.

00:28:03   It doesn't look good.

00:28:04   Sorry.

00:28:05   I'm sorry.

00:28:05   I'm sorry.

00:28:06   It just doesn't in my opinion, it doesn't look very good.

00:28:09   So the capture button is now camera control.

00:28:14   Camera control.

00:28:15   Take a little bit to settle in.

00:28:17   I am assuming you have used the camera control.

00:28:20   Have I ever?

00:28:22   I have.

00:28:23   Tell me what it's all about.

00:28:24   Cause I am genuinely very excited about this feature.

00:28:29   Okay.

00:28:29   Looks great.

00:28:30   Camera control, camera control.

00:28:31   So first off it's like the little Sapphire button and then it's got like sensors under

00:28:36   it.

00:28:36   And then when they make their case, which by the way, they detailed the cases and it

00:28:41   was which one is missing?

00:28:43   Fine woven is gone, but the other ones are still there.

00:28:48   So, um, they've got a clear case in the, in the Silicon case.

00:28:52   And they actually have a thing where they're, they're doing the electrical conductive kind

00:28:55   of bridging in a Sapphire top and like, so it's non-trivial to get this thing to be compatible

00:29:00   with cases, but they did it.

00:29:02   I mean, let me tell me real quick.

00:29:04   Right.

00:29:04   So we were talking about as we spoke about before, right?

00:29:06   Fine woven.

00:29:07   If that was going to go, what were they going to do to replace it?

00:29:11   I mean, they actually have some other options.

00:29:13   Beats are making cases now, Jason, I don't think you maybe didn't know this.

00:29:16   There is on the, on the Apple store, a polycarbonate beats case, which is interesting.

00:29:25   How does it sound?

00:29:26   Does it cut out the base?

00:29:28   They also have some other cases from like some of their other third party suppliers

00:29:34   that just have a cut out in them, which is unfortunate.

00:29:37   So they're thinking about getting rid of the fine woven case, right?

00:29:41   And part of the problem is, yeah, but we're going to lose the high end case market.

00:29:44   Where it's like, well, this year we're making the only cases anyone's going to want to use

00:29:50   because nobody wants to deal with the hole in the side of the phone.

00:29:54   And I don't know how well third party manufacturers will be able to produce something that works

00:30:01   for this.

00:30:02   I think that's going to be fascinating to see, but I think it's going to be interesting to watch.

00:30:06   It's not going to be so much of an issue because everyone's going to want the silicone cases.

00:30:10   So it will work best with the camera control.

00:30:12   So, um, the way camera control works, it does take a little getting used to, but it is,

00:30:20   um, kind of delightfully tactile.

00:30:24   So you put your finger on it and you're going to, and if you're not, phone's not on unlocked

00:30:29   and you press it, it opens to the camera.

00:30:31   Um, and then the way it works is you put a little bit of pressure on it and it will focus.

00:30:40   If you leave your finger on it, not double tap, you leave your finger on it and you put

00:30:46   two little pulses of pressure.

00:30:49   It brings up a little menu up there of other items that you can change by here and you

00:30:55   can scroll back and forth between them.

00:30:57   Whichever one you pick, then you can slide your finger back and forth to scroll.

00:31:03   So if you, if you have your camera up and it's set to zoom, then when you slide your

00:31:10   finger back and forth on the camera control, it will zoom in and out.

00:31:14   But you can also with your finger staying on it, do a sort of squeeze, squeeze little

00:31:18   double squeeze, and then it brings up all the different things you can set.

00:31:22   And so you can swipe over to photographic styles and then you, and then you push down

00:31:27   a little bit and now you're in the photographic styles and now you swipe through various styles

00:31:31   and they're visible.

00:31:33   None of this is taking a picture though, because take a picture, you got to push down all the

00:31:38   way and it's an actual, like the button depresses.

00:31:42   So there's haptics on your swipes and stuff, but then you push down and you can feel it.

00:31:48   It is a button being pushed down and that's when your picture gets taken.

00:31:52   And I think if you push and hold, it does, uh, uh, does video grabs video.

00:31:58   So you basically have to learn a little bit about like, one of the things that I found

00:32:04   is that I wanted to double tap and that's not how it works.

00:32:06   You leave your finger on it and you do that sort of essentially halfway down gesture.

00:32:12   You do the pressure on it twice and that allows you to navigate through the menu if you want

00:32:17   to do that.

00:32:18   But in practice, I think people will get like the thing that really matters to them and

00:32:22   that'll be the default.

00:32:24   And so you'll bring it up and you'll be able to swipe left and right to do whatever exposure

00:32:28   or styles or whatever.

00:32:29   And then you squeeze in the button, you know, the, the, the shutter goes off and that's

00:32:34   it.

00:32:34   And that's the whole point of it is it's a, it's a dedicated control.

00:32:38   I had a bunch of people ask, what about like doing something else with it?

00:32:42   I don't know.

00:32:43   I did not get an answer to that question.

00:32:46   What I would say is the strong implication I got is that this is a per app API so that

00:32:54   like other camera apps will also be able to use it.

00:32:58   But I don't think there is, there's some documentation for camera control on the developer website

00:33:05   now, and it is talking about purely for being for camera apps for camera apps.

00:33:10   But you can do whatever you want by and large within that.

00:33:15   Right?

00:33:15   So they showed Snapchat, they had Kino too, so two third party apps and they were using

00:33:21   different features from their applications.

00:33:24   Like I think with Snapchat, you could choose who's this going to be sent to, which is an

00:33:28   amazing use of this thing.

00:33:30   Where you have like, you know, almost like a, the, the wheels set the settings on a camera,

00:33:36   like a physical, you know, this is photo videos.

00:33:38   Like, Oh, this is my friends.

00:33:39   Is it a, I just think this is great UI.

00:33:41   I mean, there is a lot of complexity within that button, but I actually think that's great

00:33:46   because as you said, for most of the time, you're not going to need to worry about it,

00:33:50   but you always have the ability to change any settings that you want just by tapping

00:33:55   and swiping on the button and you see it right in front of you instead of the new camera

00:33:58   app.

00:33:59   I think it's really cool.

00:34:00   And then what I would say about people asking, you know, what about automating it or controlling

00:34:05   it in some other way?

00:34:06   Well, what's really happened here, and you can see it in their demonstrations is the

00:34:11   action button is no longer a camera button.

00:34:15   It's whatever you want it to be.

00:34:18   Right?

00:34:18   So if you want a definable button, you have it.

00:34:22   It's the action button.

00:34:24   The camera control is for the camera and that's how they designed it.

00:34:28   Now in the long run, will Apple let other apps do it?

00:34:33   I could see scenarios where having a little slidey thing on the side might be useful in

00:34:37   other apps.

00:34:38   Maybe I don't know what their philosophy is going to be about.

00:34:41   No, it's always about the camera.

00:34:42   This should be for camera stuff.

00:34:44   I think that's what I think.

00:34:45   I think it makes sense to just have this be for camera stuff because you're going to get

00:34:48   in a scenario where like a mastodon app is going to want you swiping up and down.

00:34:53   And you know, there's a nicety in that, but I think for a focused button on the experience

00:34:58   of taking photos, which is one of the most important things that we do on our phones,

00:35:02   I think it makes a lot of sense.

00:35:04   And then of course they also have the other feature.

00:35:08   Well, we'll talk about that when we get to the pro because I think that's a pro only

00:35:12   feature.

00:35:13   The humane killing thing, but we'll get to that in a bit.

00:35:17   The camera layout for the iPhone 16 has changed to the vertical and they've added the 48

00:35:25   megapixel.

00:35:26   They're calling it fusion camera now.

00:35:28   I think that's new.

00:35:29   I don't remember it, but there's a 48 megapixel camera that is on the iPhone 16 and it enables

00:35:37   the kind of zoom in for the 12 megapixel 2x zoom, right?

00:35:42   Because it doesn't have a telephoto lens and they've added a 12 megapixel ultra wide, which

00:35:47   enables macro on that device.

00:35:50   So it's very much like last generation iPhone kind of tech here where you've got the 48

00:35:56   megapixel camera with the where it'll shoot a 24 that's based on a composite of the 12

00:36:03   and the 48, right, the binned pixels, but also the full and then they put it all together

00:36:10   and make that 24 megapixel thing.

00:36:11   This is what they introduced I think last year on the Pro phone and then they've got

00:36:17   the 12 megapixel ultra wide, very much like what I think the Pro phone had last year as

00:36:23   well.

00:36:24   So it's great.

00:36:26   I mean, honestly, it's a really great update to get that in the base phone.

00:36:31   I just say sorry, the Discord is freaking out because I said "humane killer" as in I

00:36:42   meant like "humane AI pin killing feature" that those two words together seem to freak

00:36:49   everyone in.

00:36:50   It's the "humane killer".

00:36:50   Yes, they'll feel no pain when you kill them with your iPhone 16 Pro.

00:36:55   It's like the thing on Futurama, right, with the box that Bender gets into.

00:36:59   Yeah, and the answer is that that is not a Pro feature, that's just a feature and it's

00:37:02   unclear.

00:37:03   It's a feature that doesn't exist yet, but it's this visual intelligence feature where

00:37:06   I think you hold your camera app up to something and then you press and hold on the button?

00:37:13   No, from the lock screen press and hold the button.

00:37:16   Okay, and that brings up a non-saving camera that's just going to detect and run an AI

00:37:22   analysis.

00:37:23   Yes, it's called visual intelligence.

00:37:26   You point your phone at things that you want to tell you more about.

00:37:31   That doesn't make sense, but like a poster and it can save it, like what is this building,

00:37:39   that kind of thing.

00:37:40   And so it is the thing that was always going to come for these devices like the rabbit

00:37:46   and the humane AI pin because built into the phone, why do we need a device for this stuff?

00:37:52   That's kind of like the thing and it's actually ended up happening.

00:37:55   But yeah, it seems like you can correct me if I'm wrong, if you want to open the camera

00:38:00   app with the camera control, you press it once, right?

00:38:03   And then that opens the camera app.

00:38:06   So this is if you press and hold, then it will take you to visual intelligence.

00:38:10   Yeah, okay, makes sense.

00:38:12   Yeah, you could do spatial capture now for Vision Pro because they stack the right way,

00:38:20   the lenses, and they've added macro to the ultra wide, which they need to do if they're

00:38:26   going 48 megapixel on the lens because it changes the distance that you can be to actually

00:38:31   be able to focus on an image.

00:38:33   So that's that.

00:38:35   The bigger battery, so it's 22 or 27 hours of video playback, you can see wherever you

00:38:42   get in the regular or the plus.

00:38:43   So regular is 22, plus is 27.

00:38:45   They use video playback as like the biggest one because it's got the biggest numbers.

00:38:51   That is two hours more for the iPhone 16, one hour more for the iPhone 16 plus.

00:38:56   Okay, it's pretty good.

00:38:59   It's good because any amount of hours is always good, right?

00:39:04   Like in an iPhone.

00:39:04   A lot of Apple's products, they solve for other things, right?

00:39:09   They'll like make a product thinner and they keep the battery the same.

00:39:12   They did that for the Apple Watch, they've done it for iPads forever.

00:39:15   You know, laptops are all day battery life.

00:39:18   I'm happy that they continue to make decisions that make the iPhone last longer.

00:39:24   So like these iPhones, you know, in the pros, the pros have gotten a little bit heavier

00:39:28   in part because of the battery, in part because they're a little bit bigger.

00:39:31   But I like that they will make different decisions for how the phones will work so they can add

00:39:38   bigger batteries to them because it is one of the most important things for the usage

00:39:42   of our devices, being able to use them.

00:39:45   And the phones still start at $799 and $899 and Kayan Drowns' line, which I love, which

00:39:52   is that the iPhone holds its value more than other smartphones, which I'm sure is true,

00:39:57   but it's still just very funny anyway.

00:39:59   And I'm sure you appreciated the intense focus on going to the Apple Store to talk to one

00:40:06   of our people who can help you with a trade-in and they really know what they're talking

00:40:09   about.

00:40:09   I thought that was very funny.

00:40:11   How they continue to press that stuff.

00:40:14   Mm-hmm.

00:40:15   - This episode is brought to you by Delete Me.

00:40:20   Have you ever wondered how much of your personal data is available on the internet?

00:40:24   It's an uncomfortable thing to think about.

00:40:25   Your private information could be out there and there are data brokers.

00:40:29   They make this their business to collect and sell people's data.

00:40:33   But the good thing is we have a right to stay private, protect our privacy, and get that

00:40:37   information removed from data brokers.

00:40:39   But how would you do it?

00:40:41   Do you know all the data brokers?

00:40:42   How would you find them?

00:40:44   This is where Delete Me comes in.

00:40:45   Delete Me is a subscription service that removes your personal information from the largest

00:40:49   people search databases on the web and in the process helps prevent potential ID theft,

00:40:54   doxing, and phishing scams.

00:40:59   their experts take it from there.

00:41:00   Delete Me will send you a regular personalized privacy report showing what information they

00:41:04   found, where they found it, and what they removed for you.

00:41:07   This isn't just a one-time service.

00:41:09   Delete Me is always out there in the background in your corner working for you, monitoring

00:41:14   and removing the personal information you do not want on the internet.

00:41:17   I love this about Delete Me.

00:41:18   I love that they're out there, that I sign up and they have my information and they give

00:41:22   me these fantastic reports so I can see exactly what's going on, where my information is,

00:41:27   and what data brokers they found it on, and what process they're in.

00:41:31   I also really love that I'm able to tell them exactly what I want to be removed in case

00:41:36   there's some stuff that I do want to remain out there.

00:41:38   You can take control of your own data and keep your private life private by signing

00:42:09   A thanks to Delete Me for their support of this show and Relay.

00:42:13   - So now onto the iPhone 16 Pro, also designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence,

00:42:20   featuring the A18 Pro, which is a beefier version of the A18, right?

00:42:26   - Yeah, yeah, more stuff, more cores.

00:42:30   - Yep.

00:42:31   - Yeah, exactly.

00:42:33   - Bigger GPU, I think it does has a higher increase in system memory bandwidth to 20%.

00:42:38   - I guess we're doing this.

00:42:40   I had a question of like, in the long run, is there gonna be a Pro chip?

00:42:44   Are they gonna do two separate iPhone chips?

00:42:46   But they have the power, right?

00:42:49   They have the skills to design different chips for different models and then reuse them later.

00:42:55   I'd imagine that A18 will go in a future Apple TV or something, but the A18 Pro, specifically

00:43:02   for the higher end model, allows them to differentiate in a bunch of ways.

00:43:06   And that's great.

00:43:06   - It also has some of the advanced media, video encoders and stuff like that on this

00:43:12   chip to help for a lot of the different video processing and stuff that they have.

00:43:16   - Yeah, and again, when they talk about next gen machine learning accelerators in the CPU

00:43:21   cores, that is an M4 feature, right?

00:43:25   Fast array tracing, they say our latest core, that is, they mean the M4.

00:43:33   So I don't know how much of the M4 is in the A18, but the A18 Pro, there's a lot of M4

00:43:39   in there.

00:43:39   - So the rails of the phones are still made of titanium.

00:43:44   There were some rumors that they were gonna get glossy, but it looks like it's still matte,

00:43:48   but maybe a little bit different?

00:43:49   - Yeah, hard to say.

00:43:51   - Okay.

00:43:51   - I had brief amounts of time with them and near them to say, but yeah.

00:43:58   - And we have black, white, natural and desert titanium, which looks kind of gold.

00:44:05   - Desert titanium happened, it turns out.

00:44:08   - Did you get a sense for that color?

00:44:10   - I didn't get much of a sense for that color.

00:44:13   Again, not my strength and I only got to see the stack of Profones from a distance, but

00:44:17   I don't know.

00:44:20   And it's weird, right?

00:44:22   'Cause it's sort of like more goldy on the band and then it's more tan on the back.

00:44:26   - Okay.

00:44:27   - It's like a two-tone.

00:44:28   - So I'm trying to make a decision here.

00:44:30   - I mean, I bought the blue one last year and that one's gone.

00:44:34   - Yeah, bye-bye, bye-bye blue.

00:44:36   But you can get, there's like a black, black one, right?

00:44:38   Like it's dark.

00:44:39   - Yeah, looks nice.

00:44:40   - So maybe you get that one.

00:44:42   I was thinking natural, then I was thinking, well, then when I heard it was gold, like

00:44:46   when the rumor was gold, I was like, yeah, I want gold.

00:44:49   But now I was like, I'll go back to natural and then I've seen some more images of the

00:44:52   desert titanium and I might just do it.

00:44:55   We'll see.

00:44:57   - Screens are larger on the Pro phone, 6.3 inches in the Pro and 6.9 inches in the Pro

00:45:04   Max.

00:45:04   They have the thinnest ever borders on an Apple device is what Greg does.

00:45:09   - Yes, to avoid product bloat, they said.

00:45:12   Product bloat.

00:45:13   - Really?

00:45:14   - Interesting.

00:45:15   I think that's what he said.

00:45:16   - That's weird.

00:45:19   - Bloat.

00:45:20   I don't know.

00:45:21   - I think he meant the phones needing to get too big, I think, right?

00:45:25   - Yeah.

00:45:27   - Although they make them a little bit bigger.

00:45:28   - Right, so the screens are bigger, but they made the borders the thinnest ever on any

00:45:32   product, which I think was to avoid product bloat.

00:45:34   I think that's what Jaws said.

00:45:36   I don't know.

00:45:36   - Product bloat, I would think would mean having too many products, not that one product

00:45:41   is getting too big.

00:45:42   - I don't know.

00:45:42   Maybe that's not what he said.

00:45:43   I couldn't understand what he said and I had to run it back in my mind and figure that

00:45:46   that was probably what he said.

00:45:48   The point being they did get a little bit bigger, but the borders got smaller, which

00:45:53   means they didn't get as much bigger as they could have gotten given how much the screen

00:45:57   expanded.

00:45:59   You know, it's fine.

00:46:00   - We got the thing.

00:46:03   So the thing I was most hoping for happened, which is a new 48 megapixel ultra wide camera.

00:46:12   Product growth.

00:46:13   We have a transcript here.

00:46:14   Product growth.

00:46:16   - I don't know if that's an accurate transcript, honestly.

00:46:19   - From Apple's transcript from the podcast app?

00:46:22   - Yeah.

00:46:24   I mean, did they upload that or did they just have their algorithm do the transcript?

00:46:28   - I think I can get it from YouTube because they did do it on YouTube because they labeled

00:46:32   all the speakers.

00:46:33   - I mean, I would say product growth is better than product bloat in one way, but it also

00:46:38   doesn't like, we prevent it.

00:46:40   We minimize the growth of the product.

00:46:42   The growth.

00:46:43   Our product grew by a millimeter this year.

00:46:46   Are they peas?

00:46:47   Are they, is it a pumpkin?

00:46:50   It's a weird phrase either way.

00:46:51   I don't care.

00:46:52   I kind of like bloat.

00:46:53   I'm going to go with bloat.

00:46:54   - You should, you know, just live your best life.

00:46:56   - Bloat it out.

00:46:57   Bloat it out.

00:46:58   Fight, fight product bloat.

00:47:00   That's what I say.

00:47:02   - Well, you'd be fighting product growth, wouldn't you?

00:47:05   Because you'd be fighting product growth.

00:47:06   - I guess they said product growth.

00:47:08   What I'm saying is, that's a weird phrase.

00:47:10   I don't like it.

00:47:10   Either way.

00:47:11   - Yes.

00:47:11   - I am officially changing it in my notes to growth, but it doesn't matter.

00:47:16   That is also weird.

00:47:17   Product growth.

00:47:18   - Like we over-watered the iPhone this year and it got a little too big.

00:47:22   Come on.

00:47:22   - I know.

00:47:23   Maybe it's a joke, right?

00:47:24   Because like product growth would be a good thing, right?

00:47:26   Because you want the products to grow.

00:47:28   Any, this is not important.

00:47:30   48 megapixel ultra wide camera.

00:47:32   I'm excited about this.

00:47:33   - Yes.

00:47:34   This is what you wanted.

00:47:35   - Because now when I take pictures of things that are close to me, they don't look bad.

00:47:41   And I like to take pictures of things that are close to me.

00:47:45   - That are close to you and you want them to look good.

00:47:47   - Because then they're close to me.

00:47:49   So the things that are closest to me, I want to look good.

00:47:51   And five times telephoto camera, Tetra prism is on both phones.

00:47:59   - Tetra prism finally made it to the regular one and not just the big one,

00:48:03   which as a person who doesn't want a big phone, I think that's wonderful.

00:48:07   - I was also really excited to see photographic styles.

00:48:12   - All right.

00:48:13   Yeah.

00:48:14   They, okay, so photographic styles, there's a lot here.

00:48:19   Photographic styles is a thing that Apple introduced a few years ago.

00:48:24   And the idea was that they were going to let you reach down into the camera pipeline,

00:48:28   like way back down in the camera pipeline with presets

00:48:30   that would change what your photos looked like.

00:48:32   And this was a thing that fundamentally changed what got captured

00:48:36   or what was processed after it was captured.

00:48:40   So the final result would be different.

00:48:42   And you couldn't just like, it wasn't just like a filter.

00:48:45   It was actually changing how the data was processed when it was on the sensor

00:48:49   and coming up through the pipeline.

00:48:50   And that after it was done, you can't go back

00:48:53   because that data was processed and is done now.

00:48:58   You can edit the photo, but the photo will be based on the original,

00:49:01   which is coming out of photographic styles.

00:49:04   Separately, Apple has a thing for post-processing that is filters.

00:49:09   And you've always been able to, or for years now,

00:49:11   you've been able to do that where you can go into the photos app

00:49:13   and choose edit and choose one of the filter and apply a filter.

00:49:16   What they've done this year is not either of those things.

00:49:21   It's the new photographic styles on these 16 models are different.

00:49:25   And the difference is that it's still reaching down

00:49:33   into the base of the pipeline.

00:49:37   But what's actually happening is more meta information about your photo

00:49:44   is being saved to the file.

00:49:47   And what, which is weird, right?

00:49:51   So they're saving some more fundamental information

00:49:55   about your picture when you take it, which means that if you take,

00:49:59   so for example, this is a great example that I got from the product manager

00:50:03   for photos today.

00:50:05   You could take a picture with the black and white photographic style

00:50:09   on these new models and say, I regret the black and white choice.

00:50:16   I want it in color.

00:50:17   And you can change the style after the fact.

00:50:21   And the color is restored.

00:50:24   Amazing.

00:50:25   Because the color is there.

00:50:27   So all that information is kind of riding along with your photo.

00:50:32   It makes the photo size that she said a little bit bigger.

00:50:35   But what it means is they have the ability to go back

00:50:38   and instead of applying an effect to whatever has been processed,

00:50:44   you can actually go back down into the pipeline a little bit

00:50:47   and reprocess it based on a different selection.

00:50:51   And it'll look different.

00:50:52   Plus it's doing things where they're able to do some more sophisticated things

00:50:56   in terms of like, you know, enhance these colors and drop these colors out.

00:50:59   And there's a UI with a little box that you can move around

00:51:04   to change it, to edit it.

00:51:06   Which is also really interesting.

00:51:07   And on top of all of that, the reason I mentioned filters earlier

00:51:12   is that on these phones in the Photos app, the filters are gone.

00:51:17   They're gone.

00:51:18   You use photographic styles instead, which they think are superior

00:51:22   because they're able to use more base data on the photos.

00:51:26   So as somebody who's written a lot about the Photos app

00:51:29   and about the camera app, this is a big change

00:51:32   where they have decided to build a--

00:51:34   - There's rules so much.

00:51:34   - It's just a--

00:51:36   So basically they're like, we like photographic styles,

00:51:39   but what if you have regrets later?

00:51:41   And the answer is we're going to just write more data to the file

00:51:45   that is not visible, but is there so that we could pick it up later

00:51:48   and regenerate the file based on different styles.

00:51:51   It's wild.

00:51:52   - I think it's fantastic.

00:51:53   Because I see it as like, when they came up with this thing at first,

00:51:57   they didn't have the capability to do it.

00:52:02   So it was like, we've come up with this feature,

00:52:04   this is how it's going to work.

00:52:05   And then over time through silicon changes

00:52:10   and just various engineering changes,

00:52:12   they've been able to get it to the point where they've gotten it here.

00:52:14   Because you say, right?

00:52:15   Like it's--

00:52:15   That is much more complicated

00:52:18   and probably takes a lot more processing power

00:52:20   to be able to swap them around this way.

00:52:22   And you say also they need to get into a point

00:52:25   where the phones can handle this slight image increase,

00:52:28   like size increase.

00:52:29   Yeah, whatever it took, I love this because--

00:52:32   - And keeping my photographic styles is part of the pipeline,

00:52:35   which means if you have a style set,

00:52:37   you see it when you're previewing before you shoot,

00:52:42   you're seeing it in the style that it comes out.

00:52:45   Oh, I didn't mention one of the things that you can do

00:52:47   with the photo thing that I whose name I can never remember,

00:52:52   the camera control.

00:52:54   Is there's a gesture where you,

00:52:56   I think it's you press down partially and hold

00:53:01   where the UI drops away.

00:53:05   So you just see the picture, which is nice.

00:53:07   And that's really great with photographic styles.

00:53:09   And you can also dial in with the photo control.

00:53:11   You can actually, one of the settings is like swiping

00:53:14   through a bunch of different photographic styles

00:53:17   to find which one you want to use.

00:53:19   But if you regret it later, just edit it

00:53:22   and turn it into something different.

00:53:23   - Love it.

00:53:24   Similarly, something that I quite liked,

00:53:27   if you take 4K 120 frame video,

00:53:32   you can choose after the fact to adjust the video speed.

00:53:37   - To adjust the playback speed.

00:53:39   Yeah, you can play back 24, 30, 60 or 120.

00:53:41   - Just look pretty cool.

00:53:43   I like that.

00:53:43   - And 4K 120, very impressive.

00:53:45   They had that very funny bit where they had the cops

00:53:48   from the cop show from the ad that they did about,

00:53:51   what was it, what's that mode called?

00:53:56   Cinematic mode?

00:53:56   - Cinematic mode, yeah.

00:53:57   - Yeah, and so this time they're running away

00:53:59   from explosions and they're in slow motion

00:54:03   and they're having a conversation about

00:54:04   why are we running away?

00:54:05   I also enjoyed the video of the weekend music video

00:54:08   where they made the weekend sing a song

00:54:10   at four times the speed so that they could shoot it.

00:54:12   - I thought it was so funny.

00:54:13   It was a very throwaway thing, but it's like,

00:54:17   yeah, you just got to sing faster.

00:54:18   (laughs)

00:54:19   - Yeah, and I was just thinking that must be hilarious

00:54:21   to watch in real time where he's singing a song at 4X.

00:54:24   - He had to listen, he had to learn his song

00:54:28   at a four times speed, man.

00:54:31   - Yes, he suffered for his art.

00:54:34   - I want the behind the scenes footage

00:54:36   of hearing him do that.

00:54:37   - I know, I know, absolutely.

00:54:39   But I did like, I liked the humor in the 4K 120 thing

00:54:43   where the best part is like, don't look back, it ruins it.

00:54:46   (laughs)

00:54:47   It's just, it's good.

00:54:48   They're playing with the tropes, but 4K 120 is amazing.

00:54:52   Like that is a very impressive achievement

00:54:55   to get 120 frames at 4K in this phone.

00:54:58   So that's good too.

00:54:59   - And also you can do spatial audio capture with video now.

00:55:03   - With mixing, that's the part that I thought was wild

00:55:07   is that they've got different presets there

00:55:08   where they're able to sort of say,

00:55:10   only show what's on camera or have it be like

00:55:13   they're in a studio or have it be, you know,

00:55:15   cinematic or just have it be the sort of standard

00:55:18   they're doing a lot of stuff with that,

00:55:20   the underpinnings of their whole spatial audio thing

00:55:22   to capture that audio.

00:55:24   Pretty cool.

00:55:24   - Much bigger battery increases on this phone.

00:55:28   - Four hours across the board, huh?

00:55:30   - Yes, 27 and 33 respectively for the Pro and Pro Max.

00:55:34   The Pro Max as always is the biggest battery

00:55:40   they've ever had in an iPhone.

00:55:41   - It's a big boy.

00:55:41   - But yeah, 33 hours of video playback on the Pro Max,

00:55:46   27 on the Pro, four hours respectfully for each.

00:55:50   So pretty cool.

00:55:52   And I tell you, Jason, feeling real good

00:55:56   about my decision to go down.

00:55:58   So I think I'm gonna do it.

00:56:00   - You think you're gonna do it?

00:56:01   - I think I'm gonna do it.

00:56:03   The last question that I wanted today

00:56:06   was what was the battery life situation gonna be like?

00:56:09   And I feel good with what they've come out with

00:56:13   where I'll lose a little bit, but not that much

00:56:16   from the coming from, I think it's like an hour

00:56:20   is what I would lose, I think.

00:56:21   'Cause Apple has this cool feature on the website now

00:56:25   where you can, on the actual product page,

00:56:27   you can kind of, in the battery life section,

00:56:30   you could just choose like what phone

00:56:31   do you wanna compare this with?

00:56:32   They have this for like speeds and battery

00:56:34   and stuff like that.

00:56:35   It's just like a dropdown.

00:56:36   And so if I compare it to the iPhone 15 Pro Max,

00:56:39   it's two less hours on the iPhone 16 Pro.

00:56:43   And I think I can live with that.

00:56:44   That's not too bad.

00:56:46   So that was the last question that I wanted answered.

00:56:48   But yeah, I think I'm gonna do it.

00:56:49   I think I'm gonna do a 16 Pro desert titanium.

00:56:55   I think it's gonna be my phone choice this year.

00:56:57   - Well, the 16 Pro is much larger than the iPhone 6 Plus

00:57:05   was 10 years ago.

00:57:06   And that's when you were going into Plus Club.

00:57:08   - You know, underscore said that to me today.

00:57:10   - So it's come a long way.

00:57:11   - And I actually know, I'm sure you do know this,

00:57:15   I don't know if it would be surprising to you to hear now.

00:57:17   Do you wanna know what other phone is bigger

00:57:19   than the 6 Plus screen size?

00:57:21   - The, I don't know.

00:57:24   - The iPhone mini.

00:57:25   - The iPhone mini screen was bigger

00:57:29   than the iPhone 6 Plus's screen.

00:57:31   - Plus Club.

00:57:32   - Isn't that incredible?

00:57:33   - Well, diagonal, right?

00:57:36   So yeah, 'cause it had a big frame around it.

00:57:41   - Oh no, actually it was the same.

00:57:42   It was the same size, basically.

00:57:43   - It was the same size, of course it was.

00:57:45   They're very similar products.

00:57:47   - Isn't that incredible though?

00:57:48   - The plus, yeah.

00:57:50   - It's like 5.4 to 5.5.

00:57:53   - Let's see how it looks.

00:57:53   - Basically the same, but yeah, I'm, you know,

00:57:56   I think that here's the thing.

00:57:58   I think potentially these phones again,

00:58:01   they're getting, they're really big.

00:58:03   That's like really, really big.

00:58:05   And I think a 6.3 inch screen is gonna be good for me.

00:58:09   - Maybe big enough.

00:58:09   - 6.9 inches is big.

00:58:12   - Seven inch phone.

00:58:14   - Yeah, it's maybe more than I need.

00:58:16   And I think I wanna give it a go this year

00:58:19   'cause I think I'm gonna enjoy a change.

00:58:21   And I'm actually overall, like the package

00:58:26   is interesting to me.

00:58:28   A lot of the camera stuff,

00:58:30   like the camera package this year, I'm excited about

00:58:34   because they've added in something that I was hoping for,

00:58:38   like the camera control, I think is a really cool idea.

00:58:41   They've given me what I wanted in the 48 megapixel ultra wide

00:58:45   and then they surprised me

00:58:46   with the photographic styles changes,

00:58:48   which I'm really excited about 'cause I love that feature.

00:58:50   And so I'm pleased to see it getting some more love.

00:58:54   - A few other notes here.

00:58:55   Nobody had a new version of voice memos

00:58:59   that allows you to do multi-track

00:59:01   with cancellation of the other tracks.

00:59:03   So it all sounds wonderful, but that was in there.

00:59:06   And you might think, well, that seems silly,

00:59:08   but as they pointed out quite rightly,

00:59:10   like musicians do their demos in voice memos sometimes.

00:59:15   Like that's there, it's with them

00:59:16   and they have something they need to get down

00:59:19   and they use voice memos.

00:59:20   - My underscore reminded me,

00:59:22   do you remember that for a little while,

00:59:23   Apple made a music focused version of voice memos,

00:59:27   which they got rid of called music memos.

00:59:30   - For the same reason.

00:59:32   For the same reason, they're trying to get,

00:59:35   to give more features to the people

00:59:37   who use that functionality.

00:59:40   And sometimes they're just, you're out and about

00:59:43   and you gotta sing your song or whatever.

00:59:46   And that's just, they don't do this for no reason.

00:59:49   They do this because these are the stories

00:59:51   that they hear from people.

00:59:52   And I also wanted to mention the Chi-2 support

01:00:01   and a new MagSafe charger.

01:00:04   - I'm so upset about that.

01:00:06   I don't wanna replace them.

01:00:08   I have so many.

01:00:09   - Is it not, I think it's not,

01:00:12   I think it's backward compatible

01:00:15   with old MagSafe chargers though, right?

01:00:16   - Yeah, but I now know that I have a MagSafe charger

01:00:21   that is potentially available to me,

01:00:23   which is twice as fast.

01:00:24   - Yes.

01:00:25   Well, you're just gonna have to live with that.

01:00:28   - Yeah, I think I'll be fine.

01:00:29   I think I can live with it, but I'm still sad about it.

01:00:31   Yeah, support for Chi-2.

01:00:35   - Chi-2.

01:00:37   - This episode is brought to you by our friends at Backblaze.

01:00:43   Backblaze are the folks that look after your digital data

01:00:53   without ever having to think about it.

01:00:55   And it's not just for personal use.

01:00:56   Backblaze is great for businesses.

01:00:58   You can protect the whole team's data

01:01:12   advanced single sign-on options,

01:01:14   group management controls, and compliance support.

01:01:17   You're in safe hands with Backblaze.

01:01:19   They know their stuff.

01:01:20   They've been recommended by the New York Times,

01:01:22   Inc. Magazine, Macworld, PC World, LimeWire,

01:01:26   Wired, Tom's Guide, 9to5Mac, and more, and me.

01:01:29   I recommend them.

01:01:30   I've been using Backblaze, I don't even know how many years.

01:01:33   It's gotta be over 10 years.

01:01:34   Everything for me now is over 10 years

01:01:36   because of how long I've been doing this professionally.

01:01:38   But for me, Backblaze, absolutely essential.

01:01:42   I don't ever want to worry about losing files.

01:01:46   So I make sure Backblaze is on my computers.

01:01:49   It's on my family's computers.

01:01:51   I just want to know that it's all there.

01:01:53   And something else that I love about them,

01:01:55   they have an iOS app,

01:01:56   and I have multiple times gotten files

01:02:01   from my Backblaze backup

01:02:03   because they were on my desktop and they weren't in Dropbox

01:02:08   or they weren't somewhere else.

01:02:09   And so I was able to open the Backblaze app.

01:02:12   I can look into my backup, get the file that I need,

01:02:14   and I can share it or I can use it on my iOS device

01:02:17   or something like that.

01:02:18   It's amazing.

01:02:19   You can access your data from anywhere in the world.

01:03:19   Let's talk about the Apple Watch Series 10.

01:03:24   The Apple Watch itself.

01:03:25   Series 10.

01:03:26   Uh, thinnest Apple Watch ever.

01:03:29   Lightest Apple Watch.

01:03:31   Biggest display.

01:03:32   Biggest display.

01:03:32   On any watch.

01:03:33   On any watch.

01:03:34   Isn't that incredible?

01:03:35   Bigger than the Ultra 2.

01:03:36   Isn't that incredible?

01:03:37   That it's actually, it's bigger?

01:03:39   Now, the watches themselves aren't bigger,

01:03:42   but the screen is bigger.

01:03:44   Ultras are all bulky and big and stuff.

01:03:47   They've got a lot of stuff going on.

01:03:49   Now, we mentioned this earlier,

01:03:50   but like they just did a really weird job

01:03:52   of showing off this product

01:03:53   because like they just refused to talk about

01:03:56   how big it was and refused to talk about the fact

01:03:58   that there was a small one.

01:03:59   It was really, really big.

01:03:59   9.7 millimeters thin.

01:04:01   That's fine.

01:04:02   What I found is,

01:04:03   it seems to me that the,

01:04:07   that the, a lot of their thinness feels like

01:04:09   it came out of the bulge of the sensor array

01:04:12   on the bottom.

01:04:12   I think that they,

01:04:15   I think they slim that down.

01:04:16   I don't think it's as bulgy as it was.

01:04:18   There's a really good graphic on their website,

01:04:22   where you can kind of, you know,

01:04:24   you get those two images and you can like

01:04:26   swipe over one or the other.

01:04:28   You see this all the time

01:04:29   and it kind of shows you a difference

01:04:31   between two images, you know,

01:04:32   so you see this on the web.

01:04:33   They have this for the Apple Watch,

01:04:35   so you can go from like series nine

01:04:38   and series 10 and you can see the comparison.

01:04:41   And yes, it looks like, as you said,

01:04:42   the majority of it is coming from the back.

01:04:46   Well, I did that.

01:04:47   I just did that in reality where I had my mind

01:04:50   and the one on the thing and I held them up.

01:04:52   (laughs)

01:04:53   I looked at them, but yeah, it is,

01:04:55   it seems like, which we don't think of, right?

01:04:57   Like, 'cause my first glance at it,

01:04:59   I thought, does this look thinner?

01:05:00   Because I was thinking about the aluminum,

01:05:03   you know, body of the watch,

01:05:05   but what they've done is not only

01:05:07   have they re-engineered the bottom

01:05:09   so that the metal frame goes all the way around now,

01:05:13   but I think the dome of the sensor also feels like it's--

01:05:20   - So the dome, looking at the imagery,

01:05:23   the dome is a little bit,

01:05:24   but it's the actual back that the dome is on

01:05:27   that seems to have gotten really thin.

01:05:29   - Yeah.

01:05:29   - And then the body is a bit thinner.

01:05:31   - Yeah.

01:05:32   I mean, you're talking about incredibly detailed changes, right?

01:05:39   These are very tiny changes that they make to enable,

01:05:43   like they said, and I thought this was really a good point,

01:05:46   that 10% thinner than the Series 9,

01:05:49   when you're talking about such a tiny object,

01:05:52   to get 10% out of it is actually kind of impressive.

01:05:56   - Mm-hmm.

01:05:57   - So yeah, it's bigger but thinner,

01:06:03   and I mean, we'll see what people feel.

01:06:05   It looked nice.

01:06:06   Having a screen that large seems like it would be a real treat.

01:06:11   They did a lot of re-engineering.

01:06:14   The speaker grills look totally different.

01:06:16   You can play media back through the speaker now,

01:06:19   which is interesting.

01:06:21   It'd really be annoying to people,

01:06:24   but if you need to play a podcast through your Apple Watch,

01:06:28   you could do it.

01:06:28   - Yeah, I don't really know if that's the thing

01:06:31   that you need to do, honestly.

01:06:32   - Yeah.

01:06:33   - But you got it, I suppose.

01:06:35   - It's there if you need to.

01:06:36   - This is a very, just this Apple Watch in general

01:06:40   is just very interesting to me,

01:06:41   like the decisions they made and the decisions they didn't.

01:06:44   Like it still uses the same charging mechanism.

01:06:49   It still uses the same band connection.

01:06:52   These are just interesting things.

01:06:54   Like they've decided they wanted to change

01:06:56   the way the watch looks and feels,

01:06:59   but it's still rounded edges.

01:07:00   Like there's a lot of choices that went into this,

01:07:02   which is intriguing.

01:07:04   The display, it's the first wide angle OLED

01:07:08   that Apple has made.

01:07:09   So it's nicer to look at from multiple angles.

01:07:14   So while this screen does not get as bright

01:07:17   as the Apple Watch Ultra,

01:07:19   which says 2,000 nits compared to 3,000 nits,

01:07:23   the Apple Watch Series 10 is, according to Apple,

01:07:26   40% bright and when viewed at an angle.

01:07:29   So we're in this weird spot with the Apple Watch Series 10

01:07:34   and the Apple Watch Ultra 2

01:07:35   that we get in some times of Apple products

01:07:37   where the new one is better than the previous best one,

01:07:43   but it's not the quote unquote,

01:07:45   it's not the most expensive or quote unquote best.

01:07:48   - Right.

01:07:48   - And we're in that spot now with this,

01:07:51   which is really interesting.

01:07:52   - Well, I'm not sure the Ultra,

01:07:53   and they're trying to define the Ultra as rugged

01:07:57   and for sports and stuff.

01:07:59   - Yeah.

01:07:59   - And it's a different style,

01:08:01   but the Ultra, I would say the Ultra is not a pro

01:08:06   in the sense that it always has to be the best,

01:08:09   which is good because although we got a long thing

01:08:15   about the Ultra in this presentation,

01:08:17   it's just the Ultra 2.

01:08:18   They didn't update it this year.

01:08:21   But this Series 10 really got a boost.

01:08:25   And as somebody who does not have an Ultra,

01:08:27   I look at this Series 10 announcement,

01:08:28   I think, "Hmm, that's really interesting."

01:08:30   Since I'm a couple of years back.

01:08:32   - It's only one for you.

01:08:33   - And I have a black titanium, brushed titanium model.

01:08:38   And so they've got the jet black aluminum,

01:08:41   they're shiny polished aluminum one.

01:08:43   They've also got that dark slate gray titanium.

01:08:47   They brought titanium back.

01:08:48   - Yep.

01:08:48   - And banished stainless this time.

01:08:51   - Yeah, so the full color line up.

01:08:53   Jet black aluminum, also rose gold and silver aluminum,

01:08:56   but they're not polished, they're just regular aluminum.

01:08:58   - Yeah.

01:08:59   - Then titanium, we have natural gold slate and silver.

01:09:03   And there's also a polished silver Hermes only version

01:09:08   of the titanium.

01:09:10   - Nice, sure, why not?

01:09:11   - I saw that gold titanium, Jason,

01:09:13   and did something to me.

01:09:17   I miss so much, I polished gold Apple Watch.

01:09:22   - Oh, you're gonna go all,

01:09:24   are you gonna be desert gold Mike now?

01:09:26   - I can't do it, the battery.

01:09:28   I don't think I can go back.

01:09:29   - Because you love the Ultra so much.

01:09:31   - Yep, I love my favorite thing.

01:09:33   - Black Ultra looks good too.

01:09:35   I gotta say Black Ultra looks really good.

01:09:37   - It looks, so okay, Apple Ultra 2 is now in black.

01:09:42   - Yeah, Apple Watch Ultra 2.

01:09:43   - Really weird, really weird,

01:09:46   but it looked fantastic, black and orange,

01:09:48   man, that looked good.

01:09:49   - I talked, that's my San Francisco Giants colors right there

01:09:52   and yours too.

01:09:53   And that the new Milanese, I didn't see it,

01:09:56   but a friend of the show, John Gruber saw it

01:09:59   and he told me he felt like it was like made of plastic

01:10:03   or something only just in the sense that he felt

01:10:06   he could not believe how light

01:10:08   the titanium Milanese loop was.

01:10:11   And I can believe that.

01:10:12   And the clasp, I saw the clasp on that one

01:10:15   and it's serious.

01:10:16   Like it's not accidentally falling off your wrist.

01:10:20   You like click it on.

01:10:21   - Yes, serious is the way to put that.

01:10:24   - Serious.

01:10:24   - I think it's a bit much, but you know.

01:10:30   - It's Ultra.

01:10:30   - It's Ultra.

01:10:31   And it's just doing what it should be doing.

01:10:34   They still have the Milanese, you can go get it

01:10:36   with a magnetic, which I love and it's beautiful.

01:10:38   And it's very nice to adjust.

01:10:40   That thing is like your scuba dive in.

01:10:42   You don't want your watch to come off.

01:10:43   - They said it was for scuba.

01:10:45   - Yeah, that's good.

01:10:47   Sounds good.

01:10:47   Sounds good.

01:10:48   Anyway, I am tempted this year

01:10:50   since this is also not my iPhone upgrade year

01:10:52   for my personal phone necessarily.

01:10:54   Although I can always do that if I want,

01:10:56   but the new watch is very tempting to me.

01:11:00   - I'm incredibly tempted by the gold titanium,

01:11:04   but I just, I don't know what to do.

01:11:08   'Cause I know I'm not gonna be on the Ultra forever.

01:11:12   I know that.

01:11:13   Because I can see the trajectory now

01:11:17   that the Apple Watch is gonna continue to improve

01:11:20   and it's gonna be different to the Ultra.

01:11:23   Like, I know what you mean about like, it's the rugged one.

01:11:25   But like, I think there was still a question of like,

01:11:28   but will this always also be the best one, right?

01:11:30   Like, there was a possibility of that

01:11:32   because it has been the best one, I think,

01:11:34   for the last couple of years in its full suite of features.

01:11:37   But that is now changing.

01:11:39   And maybe I just need to let go of the amazing battery life.

01:11:44   I'm disappointed that they've yet to find a way

01:11:47   to increase the battery life.

01:11:48   And now, you know, I was talking earlier

01:11:49   about what Apple prioritized,

01:11:51   and it seems like they are not interested

01:11:53   in increasing the Apple Watch's battery life

01:11:55   because they made it thinner, right?

01:11:57   They didn't, if they would have not made it thinner,

01:12:00   maybe they could have gotten another couple of hours

01:12:02   of battery or something, or maybe an hour of battery.

01:12:04   Who knows, right?

01:12:05   But this is the route that they're going down.

01:12:09   But I was also pretty excited.

01:12:11   You know me and my bugbear about Apple Health features,

01:12:15   sleep apnea detection.

01:12:17   - Yeah, real feature does not require an oxygen sensor,

01:12:20   is based entirely around the accelerometer.

01:12:23   So you wear when you sleep, and it figures out from that.

01:12:27   And they've done, you know,

01:12:29   they've scientifically validated this,

01:12:32   and they're getting regulatory approval,

01:12:34   and they're gonna roll it out,

01:12:35   and it basically watches you for 30 days,

01:12:38   and then issues you a report of moderate

01:12:42   to severe sleep apnea, at which point they suggest

01:12:46   that you go talk to a doctor, right?

01:12:48   Because they're not gonna do anything more than that,

01:12:50   but it's to give you that warning sign.

01:12:52   And what I thought was interesting,

01:12:54   and we got this a couple of times in this presentation,

01:12:58   because it's for the AirPods as well,

01:13:02   the way they're phrasing it is,

01:13:04   we expect clearance from the FDA and other regulators soon,

01:13:08   and then it will be available in,

01:13:10   and for the sleep apnea detection,

01:13:11   it was like 150 countries or something?

01:13:14   Like how many countries even are there?

01:13:16   So this is what they're saying.

01:13:18   This is what they're saying is like,

01:13:20   we expect this feature to be available worldwide.

01:13:22   This isn't gonna be one of those,

01:13:23   you know, what they're saying is,

01:13:25   this isn't gonna be like Apple Pay Cash, okay?

01:13:27   It's not gonna be like a one country or two countries.

01:13:30   It's gonna be everywhere.

01:13:31   - Google tells me there are 195 countries in the world.

01:13:35   - All right.

01:13:36   Well, apologies to the 45 who are not gonna get

01:13:39   the sleep apnea detection, but anyway,

01:13:42   so I like that 'cause it's the,

01:13:44   we don't have clearance yet,

01:13:45   but we expect clearance from the FDA,

01:13:47   who we've mentioned by name and other regulators,

01:13:50   real soon for this.

01:13:52   And you know, that's great 'cause the whole,

01:13:54   one of the great successes over the last 10 years

01:13:56   of the Apple Watch has been,

01:13:58   as they highlight in their videos,

01:14:00   and they did again in the opening video today,

01:14:02   is it not only is, you know, calls for help when you fall,

01:14:07   when you've been in a crash, things like that,

01:14:09   but it's also when you've got a medical issue

01:14:13   that it can call it out for you and warn you about it.

01:14:16   And they've been able to do that with things like arrhythmia

01:14:18   for a while now.

01:14:18   And they're gonna be able to do it with sleep apnea,

01:14:21   which I mean, they had,

01:14:22   there's some great stats here, right?

01:14:24   It's 80% of people have sleep apnea,

01:14:28   who have sleep apnea are undiagnosed.

01:14:30   And then similarly about the hearing protection,

01:14:36   they're like, even the people who know

01:14:38   they've got hearing loss don't get treated.

01:14:41   So this is part of Apple's philosophy

01:14:46   that they're trying to do in changing the world

01:14:48   by improving people's health,

01:14:50   by providing them with information,

01:14:51   and then referring them to their healthcare providers.

01:14:55   So this is, we saw two big ones of those.

01:14:58   And this is what I want from them,

01:15:00   because when they're able to do something like this,

01:15:03   they are able to affect change,

01:15:06   which is like, if we're gonna wear these devices,

01:15:08   they should do these things for us too, right?

01:15:10   They should make positive change to our lives.

01:15:14   They should be able to help us out in scenarios

01:15:16   where we otherwise wouldn't know we need it.

01:15:18   But also I don't like, from a presentation perspective,

01:15:25   kind of dancing around stuff.

01:15:30   Like I find that frustrating when it's like,

01:15:33   we put this thing in there and maybe, you know,

01:15:36   you might, I don't know, maybe, I don't know,

01:15:38   don't worry about it.

01:15:39   Like I don't like that.

01:15:41   Like if you're gonna tell me

01:15:43   that this device can measure something,

01:15:47   I want it to be impactful.

01:15:50   Just like you can find out your blood oxygen for fun.

01:15:54   Or like for no great reason that we can tell you,

01:15:58   you can use it.

01:15:59   It's just not, I don't find that to be enticing.

01:16:01   This is great.

01:16:02   This is exactly what I want because they did the work,

01:16:06   they did the studies,

01:16:07   and then they've done the work with the regulators

01:16:09   and they will do the work with the regulators

01:16:11   because they believe in this

01:16:12   and they will be able to make serious change

01:16:16   to people's lives.

01:16:17   And like, that's what I want them to be doing.

01:16:19   And like, I'm really happy that they have done that.

01:16:21   And I'm very excited about this feature.

01:16:24   Because it's gonna help people

01:16:25   and that's what they should be doing

01:16:26   with all of the resources that they have at their disposal.

01:16:30   So good work, Apple.

01:16:32   They added a water temperature sensor

01:16:35   and a depth sensor like the Ultra has.

01:16:37   And we already mentioned the Ultra 2,

01:16:41   it's good for people who are active.

01:16:44   - Yeah, I thought it was interesting

01:16:47   that their pitch is like listing a bunch of sports

01:16:49   and it's like, oh, for cyclists, we have this,

01:16:51   for swimmers, we have this.

01:16:53   We have a compass for this, for hikers,

01:16:55   we've got all those things.

01:16:56   And I sat there thinking, how would I,

01:16:59   if I went to Stan who was giving this pitch

01:17:02   and I was like, Stan, curling, what can you do for me?

01:17:06   And I don't know, I think you'd have to do

01:17:10   a lot of machine learning based on the movements

01:17:12   of a curling delivery or a sweeping

01:17:15   in order to properly measure it.

01:17:16   I'm just saying, I would be very interested

01:17:19   in figuring out how they could handle curling tracking

01:17:22   on the Ultra 2. - The Apple Watch Ultra 2,

01:17:24   if your wrist got caught in between two curling stones,

01:17:27   it would less likely to be broken.

01:17:29   - Yes, I'm just thinking like, could they,

01:17:32   in terms of workout, could they do some training

01:17:35   so that they could measure like the speed of my delivery

01:17:38   or things like that?

01:17:40   I don't know if they can.

01:17:41   - I'm not. - I don't know,

01:17:43   but I'm just thinking about it.

01:17:44   - I believe they could.

01:17:44   I believe they could. - I'm thinking about it.

01:17:45   - With the accelerometer, I think they could.

01:17:47   - Yeah, they just choose not to, but they could.

01:17:49   - They could choose not to.

01:17:49   - All right. - Grow up, Apple, all right?

01:17:51   Stop being such cowards.

01:17:52   Will you just do the work for curling?

01:17:54   - Come on, just do it.

01:17:55   Just do it. - Grow up.

01:17:57   - So here's my interesting Apple Watch note

01:17:59   that I wanted to mention, which is,

01:18:00   there's even a slide at the end there,

01:18:02   a little bento slide for Apple Watch,

01:18:04   has the word intelligence on it.

01:18:08   - Somebody else's intelligence.

01:18:11   - I love it, I love it.

01:18:12   What intelligence do you mean?

01:18:15   Do you mean artificial intelligence?

01:18:16   Well, no.

01:18:17   Do you mean Apple intelligence, which is a brand name?

01:18:19   No.

01:18:20   What they really mean is machine learning stuff.

01:18:23   So they're like, "Hey, like on device Siri."

01:18:26   'Cause they're like, "We have a neural engine in our package."

01:18:29   Oh, does that do Apple intelligence?

01:18:31   No.

01:18:31   But it does on device Siri and it does crash detection.

01:18:37   Here's the thing that's interesting.

01:18:40   They wanna talk about the neural engine

01:18:43   and they wanna talk about all the ways

01:18:44   that they use machine learning, as is classic Apple,

01:18:48   to do all sorts of things that are very impressive

01:18:51   on the Apple Watch.

01:18:52   What they can't talk about is Apple intelligence

01:18:55   because they can't support it

01:18:57   because it has too many onerous requirements.

01:19:00   This can't go on.

01:19:05   Like it's early days, they can get away with it this time,

01:19:09   but they need a strategy.

01:19:12   And I'm thinking now they need it at WWDC next year

01:19:16   for how to get Apple intelligence features on the Apple Watch.

01:19:19   Even if all it is is announcing a path

01:19:23   where your Apple Watch talks to your iPhone and gets help.

01:19:27   So there is some stuff.

01:19:31   So like I've seen people share this before

01:19:33   that like notification summaries are on watchOS 11.

01:19:38   Okay.

01:19:39   And like that's from your phone.

01:19:41   'Cause it's sent from your phone, right?

01:19:43   So like they're just sending a summary.

01:19:46   But I don't think, and this is the thing,

01:19:47   it's like, I know you can do on-device Siri

01:19:49   and that's great, but it's not the new Siri.

01:19:52   And I don't think Apple Watch is gonna be able to do

01:19:56   Apple intelligence proper for a long time.

01:19:58   So I feel like they need to have some sort of a system,

01:20:02   whether it's gonna go out to the cloud,

01:20:04   to Apple's private cloud compute,

01:20:06   or whether it's going to talk to your phone.

01:20:08   But we're in an awkward state right now

01:20:11   where they wanna talk about their machine learning stuff,

01:20:14   but they can't call it what they wanna call it.

01:20:18   So instead it's sort of like generic intelligence

01:20:22   on Apple Watch.

01:20:23   And I get why, I know it's early.

01:20:25   I understand all of this,

01:20:27   but at some point this is gonna be a problem.

01:20:29   And they're gonna need to address this in some way

01:20:32   because what you don't want ultimately is if I have a phone

01:20:36   with good Siri and a watch with bad Siri, right?

01:20:42   You've gotta square it up somehow.

01:20:44   So they're gonna have to,

01:20:45   they didn't tell that story today, I'm not surprised.

01:20:48   That was always the most likely option

01:20:50   was don't talk about it.

01:20:52   I did get tickled that they put up the thing that says

01:20:54   intelligence, one word, because it does make you go,

01:20:59   "Oh, you mean some not Apple intelligence?"

01:21:02   It's like, but not, well, not the way you think, right?

01:21:04   Like, no, no, this is a different earlier form

01:21:08   of intelligence, but at some point

01:21:09   they gotta deal with that.

01:21:11   - Yeah, I guess it's one of these things where

01:21:14   maybe the combo of getting better at private cloud compute

01:21:19   and also just the march of Moore's law and technology

01:21:24   means that the Apple Watch might get there.

01:21:26   But I agree with you that they need to have

01:21:29   some kind of bridge until these points can be met.

01:21:32   - Yeah, it feels like a long time

01:21:35   before they could do something like on device

01:21:37   Apple intelligence on an Apple Watch,

01:21:39   especially 'cause the Apple Watch

01:21:40   doesn't have your personal context either, really.

01:21:43   And then your Apple Watch is gonna check all your email

01:21:45   and all of your calendar items.

01:21:47   Like you could get there, but that's a lot.

01:21:49   And the Apple Watch has a buddy, which is the iPhone.

01:21:53   - Love buddy.

01:21:53   - And also has access to the cloud.

01:21:55   If it's online, if it's on cellular,

01:21:58   it has access to the cloud, they could do that.

01:22:00   They're just gonna have to come up with a way.

01:22:03   And I feel this way about a lot of their other products too

01:22:05   is that short of updating the Apple TV and the HomePod

01:22:09   and all of those other things to support Apple intelligence,

01:22:12   the way you do it is by offloading it to a device nearby

01:22:15   that has that or sending it to the cloud,

01:22:17   they're gonna have to figure that out.

01:22:19   We're at the beginning of year one.

01:22:21   Like it hasn't even shipped.

01:22:22   So we've got time, but they have to have a solution.

01:22:25   - Right, the beginning is next month.

01:22:28   - It starts next month, but they're gonna need to come up

01:22:30   with a story here next year.

01:22:32   - I was sad that they showed off Image Playgrounds again.

01:22:37   I was hoping.

01:22:39   - Yeah, I thought we were gonna, I mean, it goes quick,

01:22:42   but I was hoping they were not gonna do that.

01:22:45   - The Memeoji looked a little better, but still not good.

01:22:48   Still look gross to me.

01:22:49   - The custom emoji, I thought they looked okay.

01:22:52   - The Memeoji characters that you can make of your friends

01:22:55   on Family and Image Playgrounds.

01:22:57   - I still think that that's a terrible mistake

01:22:59   and they shouldn't go down there.

01:23:00   Really the presentation was something like, fun.

01:23:03   Anyway, let's move on.

01:23:05   I do have a tidbit and this is gonna make our friend,

01:23:08   friend of the show, Casey Liz said,

01:23:09   but there's a new cleanup feature in Apple Intelligence.

01:23:15   Cleanup is the feature where you can erase people

01:23:17   in the background of your images and stuff.

01:23:19   Well, what I discovered today is if you do that

01:23:25   on somebody's face, it pixelates their face.

01:23:29   - Yes, I've seen this online.

01:23:31   - So it's a quick way, if you've got like a shot

01:23:35   and you wanna obscure the face of a person who's in it,

01:23:38   you can just, you literally edit and do cleanup

01:23:40   and go, you know, with your finger over their face

01:23:43   and it pixelates it.

01:23:45   They're real clever, really smart little, little--

01:23:47   - I've used this feature a few times and it's good.

01:23:52   Like it's fine.

01:23:53   Like I had some pictures when we were at Disneyland in Paris

01:23:57   and there's a picture of me and Nadine in front

01:23:59   of the castle, but it's a few people in the background,

01:24:01   they're gone now, you know, it's like, it does the job.

01:24:04   - No, it does.

01:24:05   No, cleanup is a good feature.

01:24:06   Cleanup works pretty well.

01:24:08   But I think that pixelating somebody's face,

01:24:11   'cause you don't want them, you know,

01:24:13   it's like you don't wanna show your kid's face

01:24:14   in social media.

01:24:15   I think that's pretty clever.

01:24:16   - Yeah, I think that's really nice.

01:24:17   - So sorry to Casey who wrote a whole lot to do that.

01:24:20   - I know it's like a way to do it.

01:24:21   It's a bit aggressive to do to a child.

01:24:23   - It is.

01:24:24   - Like here's my child criminal, you know?

01:24:26   - Yeah, well, you know, what you gonna do?

01:24:28   - What you gonna do?

01:24:29   You put emoji on their face is what you can do,

01:24:30   but maybe you shouldn't.

01:24:33   (laughing)

01:24:36   - Zach is just posting this thing in Discord.

01:24:39   - Yeah, whatever Zach is doing is not what

01:24:42   the current builds of cleanup do,

01:24:45   'cause they've added this thing in where it pixelates it.

01:24:48   - Well, I mean, you know, these things maybe

01:24:51   don't always work 100% of the time.

01:24:53   I will put, Zach, with your permission,

01:24:56   I will put a screenshot of that in the show notes

01:24:58   because, oh man, man, oh man.

01:25:03   - That is clearly from a previous build.

01:25:05   - No, it works on the current build.

01:25:07   This feature does exist in the current build.

01:25:09   - It just does, well, whatever Zach did is the horror.

01:25:14   - Yeah, something terrible happened.

01:25:15   There was maybe a special-

01:25:16   - Something very bad happened.

01:25:18   - Because that's not good. (laughing)

01:25:20   You have to go look at this, be in the show notes.

01:25:22   You can go look.

01:25:23   - It's bad.

01:25:24   - AirPods 4 is now two products.

01:25:27   We have AirPods 4 and we have AirPods 4

01:25:31   with active noise cancellation.

01:25:33   I'm gonna say maybe not the best name.

01:25:36   - Remember we were talking about like,

01:25:40   how are they gonna do this?

01:25:41   Because there's like various kinds of like old AirPods

01:25:46   and new AirPods and all that.

01:25:47   And so what they decided to do, that is to their credit,

01:25:51   is they're not gonna sell, I guess, old AirPods anymore.

01:25:55   They're gonna sell AirPods 4.

01:25:57   But there's two AirPods 4?

01:26:00   And they're different.

01:26:01   And so why are they both AirPods?

01:26:04   I don't understand why they're both AirPods.

01:26:06   So we have AirPods.

01:26:08   So now the new AirPods product line-

01:26:08   - Why not AirPods 4 and AirPods 5?

01:26:10   Why not just do that?

01:26:11   Like why?

01:26:12   - Right, so it's AirPods 4, also AirPods 4,

01:26:15   also AirPods Pro 2, also AirPods Max, which is the second,

01:26:19   but it's not called the second.

01:26:21   Yeah, it's great though.

01:26:24   These announcements are great because what they did is

01:26:27   they realized they wanna have a more affordable AirPods.

01:26:30   So they've got the 129 model.

01:26:32   And then they have a second AirPods 4 model

01:26:34   that has active noise cancellation

01:26:36   to this lower end design that doesn't have the little thing,

01:26:40   little silicone tip that you stick in your ear.

01:26:42   - I straight up do not know-

01:26:42   - And then it has noise cancellation.

01:26:44   - How this is technically possible.

01:26:46   And I look forward to-

01:26:47   Okay, go on.

01:26:48   - I mean, I can tell you why.

01:26:49   It's actually very similar to how AirPods Pro does it.

01:26:52   And I should have stopped you last week

01:26:56   when we were talking about this.

01:26:57   'Cause the answer is,

01:26:58   there's a microphone in the AirPod.

01:27:01   So the AirPod can hear what's coming from the outside

01:27:05   and it cancels it.

01:27:06   That's how it works.

01:27:08   It's not as effective.

01:27:10   It's not as effective because it's not using

01:27:12   the physical clamp down to shut down

01:27:14   all the stuff coming into your ear.

01:27:16   But it can still cancel the sound that comes into your ear,

01:27:21   even if it's letting it in.

01:27:23   It's two pieces of cancellation.

01:27:25   Part of it is passive,

01:27:26   which is you stick a thing in your ear

01:27:28   and you can't hear as well.

01:27:29   But the other is active,

01:27:30   which is whatever sound does get through, it cancels.

01:27:33   And so with this,

01:27:35   you're gonna have more noise leaking in,

01:27:37   but it can aggressively try to cancel that noise

01:27:40   that's leaking in.

01:27:41   So it can do an okay job.

01:27:43   We'll see how good a job it does.

01:27:44   I'm sure it doesn't do as good a job as AirPods Pro.

01:27:47   - 'Cause that's the thing.

01:27:48   Like, I know how it works, right?

01:27:51   And I think maybe I have not done a good job

01:27:53   of explaining my point.

01:27:54   It's just like, I just don't know how effective it would be

01:27:58   without creating the seal.

01:28:00   And so I'm assuming it's better than I imagined it would be.

01:28:04   Otherwise they wouldn't do it.

01:28:05   - That's the $50 question here, I guess.

01:28:06   - They wouldn't do it if it was bad.

01:28:08   And also they've done transparency mode,

01:28:12   adaptive mode, conversational awareness.

01:28:15   - All that stuff.

01:28:15   - Really incredible.

01:28:17   Like, and until they spoke about

01:28:19   what they're adding to AirPods Pro 2,

01:28:21   I was very much like, why AirPods Pro then?

01:28:24   And it seems like they're maybe gonna take AirPods Pro

01:28:27   into a more health focused thing, I think, going forward,

01:28:31   which is interesting.

01:28:32   - Yeah, plus they've got the silicone tips.

01:28:34   So they're much more kind of like,

01:28:36   they're definitely higher end and more processing power.

01:28:39   And I think that that will be, whenever they update them,

01:28:41   that will be the case.

01:28:42   They'll have more capabilities still.

01:28:44   But the fact that they're doing a software update this fall

01:28:49   with AirPods Pro that will turn them in

01:28:51   because of the changes in some of the regulations,

01:28:53   especially here in the US,

01:28:55   they're gonna turn them into hearing aids, basically.

01:28:58   They're gonna be capable of being hearing aids,

01:29:00   which is a pretty cool feature.

01:29:02   And we'll see how they,

01:29:03   I mean, it's gonna be interesting to see

01:29:04   how the noise canceling version of AirPods 4 sound,

01:29:09   how all of these sound compared to each other

01:29:11   and what the strengths and weaknesses are.

01:29:13   That will be something to watch because,

01:29:15   but it's great 'cause like 129,

01:29:18   you get into the AirPods line and at 179,

01:29:20   you get noise cancellation

01:29:21   and all those other fancy features.

01:29:23   That's pretty cool.

01:29:24   - And if it works well,

01:29:25   $180 is an incredible price for this product.

01:29:29   - The price of it works, yeah, for sure, for sure.

01:29:31   - It only has to work kind of, you know?

01:29:33   I'm thinking maybe that these features,

01:29:37   these hearing aid features

01:29:38   aren't on the immediate roadmap for me

01:29:40   because they specifically,

01:29:42   there's more than a hundred countries and regions,

01:29:44   but they specifically call out the United States,

01:29:47   Germany and Japan.

01:29:48   And it's to me weird that they wouldn't put the UK in there

01:29:53   if, 'cause they always do,

01:29:54   like not because we're special,

01:29:56   but because Apple always puts the UK in if the UK--

01:29:58   - This is one of those cases.

01:30:00   Yeah, this is one of those cases where,

01:30:02   and this was true in the US only, I think last year,

01:30:05   that there's a question of what are,

01:30:09   do you have to be like a medical company

01:30:11   and make hearing aids with a prescription

01:30:13   or do you have the ability to do what they refer to here

01:30:16   as the clinical grade over the counter hearing aid?

01:30:20   And this was a change.

01:30:22   And so in some countries it's probably not available yet,

01:30:26   but I would imagine that this is one of those things.

01:30:29   This is one of those things about Apple

01:30:30   and the size of Apple and the appeal of Apple

01:30:33   is Apple doing this product

01:30:34   and having hearing aid functionality

01:30:36   in a bunch of countries all around the world

01:30:39   is going to push countries to change their laws

01:30:42   about hearing aids.

01:30:43   It's gonna happen.

01:30:45   I'm not saying every country will do it,

01:30:47   but it will be a push to say, why aren't we doing this?

01:30:51   Why have we prevented products like this from existing?

01:30:55   And I think that's really interesting

01:30:56   that Apple really does have the ability

01:30:58   to set the discourse about some of this stuff.

01:31:01   - I at least hope that I will get the,

01:31:04   what seems enhanced hearing protection feature,

01:31:07   which is just doing more, reducing louder noises.

01:31:10   That's actually the thing I personally care about the most.

01:31:13   But then also being able to take a hearing test

01:31:16   would be amazing.

01:31:17   And I really wanna be able to do that.

01:31:19   I would be very interested to know.

01:31:20   And again, this is what I was talking about earlier.

01:31:22   You're making me wear, not making me,

01:31:24   you were making these products that I wanna wear and use

01:31:28   and Apple really wants me to use them all the time.

01:31:31   Why not also make it so I can see if my hearing is good?

01:31:36   I like that.

01:31:39   Like that integration is good.

01:31:41   And to make those integrations work very well,

01:31:43   again, they need to go out and get regulatory approval.

01:31:47   And I just appreciate that they're back in that

01:31:50   in a big way this year with two big health initiatives.

01:31:54   Like I think that's fantastic.

01:31:56   - And the stats for this one are particularly stark.

01:31:58   80% of people have not had their hearing checked

01:32:01   in the last five years or something like that.

01:32:03   - I don't know if I've ever had my hearing checked.

01:32:05   - I haven't had my hearing checked in the last five years.

01:32:07   And 75% of people who are diagnosed with hearing loss

01:32:10   are untreated.

01:32:12   They just--

01:32:13   - They don't know.

01:32:14   How would you know?

01:32:14   - They just go about their,

01:32:15   well, no, but they've been diagnosed.

01:32:16   They say, "You have hearing loss."

01:32:18   - Oh, sorry, sorry.

01:32:18   - I'm like, "All right."

01:32:19   - Diagnosed.

01:32:20   - Thanks, bye.

01:32:21   - Yeah.

01:32:22   - Okay, that's it.

01:32:23   - I think a lot of people don't like the idea

01:32:26   and I had this with members of my family.

01:32:28   They don't want to wear a hearing aid.

01:32:30   - There's stigma.

01:32:31   There's a stigma to it.

01:32:32   And you know what?

01:32:33   That's actually one of the brilliant things about this is

01:32:35   AirPods don't have that stigma attached to it.

01:32:38   It's just like, "Oh, I need to hear you.

01:32:39   I'll put in my AirPods."

01:32:40   Which is the little video they showed.

01:32:41   But there's something to that, right?

01:32:43   It's really interesting.

01:32:44   And also the fact that your profile,

01:32:46   your profile goes along to your devices

01:32:50   and is applied to music and TV and all those things too.

01:32:53   - Amazing.

01:32:54   - How about that?

01:32:54   It's really smart.

01:32:55   - I think this is fantastic.

01:32:56   Do you know what's fantastic?

01:32:57   - Over a hundred countries and regions, over a hundred.

01:32:59   So almost half of the countries, as it turns out,

01:33:03   will get this feature, but maybe not in the UK.

01:33:05   - 50% less than the Steve Abner.

01:33:09   - Yeah.

01:33:10   - But you know what's not great though, Jason?

01:33:12   - What's not great?

01:33:13   - AirPods Max.

01:33:14   - I was gonna say you could buy three AirPods 4

01:33:19   with noise cancellation for the price of AirPods Max,

01:33:21   'cause it's still $549.

01:33:23   All they changed, there's some new colors.

01:33:25   It has a USB-C connector instead of a lightning connector.

01:33:27   Woo-hoo!

01:33:28   And support for personal spatial audio.

01:33:32   - Yeah.

01:33:34   - Which means that there are minor hardware changes in there.

01:33:37   - This is good because Apple have freed me now.

01:33:40   - Right, by doing this.

01:33:42   I now know I need to get different over-ear headphones.

01:33:46   That's what I know now.

01:33:47   Because look, before there's been,

01:33:50   I've used them because I really like them

01:33:52   and I like the way that they time my devices

01:33:55   and I get all the benefits.

01:33:57   But I want something that is more comfortable,

01:34:01   easier to pack, and I can connect via USB-C to my computer,

01:34:07   like to get audio.

01:34:09   And they gave me one of those.

01:34:14   But I also thought that when they upgraded AirPods Max,

01:34:16   I would get those because I would get

01:34:18   adaptive transparency, conversational awareness.

01:34:22   - Right, the H2 chip. - Conversational awareness

01:34:24   would be most useful for me on AirPods Max.

01:34:28   - Indeed.

01:34:29   - I can't believe they are charging $550 for this product.

01:34:34   - I can't.

01:34:35   I agree. - And they did not even

01:34:37   put the new chip in it. - Look, here's the argument.

01:34:40   When it came out, people were like,

01:34:42   "I can't believe it cost this."

01:34:44   But now they just revved it.

01:34:47   It's still behind everything else.

01:34:49   The price hasn't changed.

01:34:51   It's really, it's quite a thing.

01:34:56   This is quite a thing.

01:34:57   And the funny thing is when they introed it,

01:34:58   they said people love AirPods Max.

01:35:00   It's like, they do. - They do.

01:35:02   - I've talked to people who have AirPods Max.

01:35:03   - In spite of itself. (laughs)

01:35:05   - In spite of everything, they do like them.

01:35:07   But not having any of those nice new AirPods features,

01:35:12   just literally, and this is, Mark Gurman reported this.

01:35:18   And he was right, which is they're gonna update AirPods Max

01:35:22   and it's not gonna be anything.

01:35:23   It's gonna be like USB-C.

01:35:25   And yeah, I guess so.

01:35:27   Here we are. - I'm disappointed.

01:35:28   I'm very disappointed.

01:35:29   I'm really disappointed about this

01:35:31   'cause this is a product that I was hoping

01:35:34   to get more out of.

01:35:35   And I've got good use out of my AirPods Max,

01:35:37   but I think it's time to move on probably to those Sonys.

01:35:41   My wife has the Sony ones that everybody likes

01:35:44   and she loves them.

01:35:45   So that's probably gonna be where I go.

01:35:47   But I'm gonna miss the features, right?

01:35:50   Like I love the feature set of the AirPods line.

01:35:55   And the AirPods Max has a lot of that.

01:35:57   Like I really like the switching between devices.

01:36:00   I really like the way that the buttons work

01:36:02   and feel, you know, all that kind of stuff.

01:36:04   But I guess I'm gonna have to start doing some research

01:36:06   and decide like, what do I wanna move to?

01:36:09   Because I'm just disappointed in this.

01:36:14   I really am.

01:36:14   It's very frustrating.

01:36:16   So that was the September event.

01:36:19   I would say overall, this was an interesting event.

01:36:24   I think the way in which they spoke about stuff

01:36:27   is interesting.

01:36:28   There's a couple of things that disappointed me.

01:36:30   There's a couple of things that intrigued me.

01:36:31   And there's a couple of things that I'm super excited about.

01:36:34   And that is about as good as I could hope for

01:36:36   from a September event, I think.

01:36:38   'Cause so much of it is leaked beforehand, you know?

01:36:42   What's your overall feeling on this one?

01:36:45   - You know, iPhone event is gonna be rolling the ball forward

01:36:52   a little bit.

01:36:53   Like that's where we are.

01:36:55   We have not yet, next year might be a year

01:36:58   where there are some major new kind of like innovations

01:37:01   in the iPhone.

01:37:03   But this is, the iPhone is the story

01:37:07   and the iPhone is pushing everything ahead,

01:37:10   getting things to run with Apple intelligence,

01:37:13   tweaking the cameras to be better,

01:37:14   adding another button.

01:37:17   So weird that there are two buttons added to the iPhone

01:37:20   in two years.

01:37:21   To do some better things that we've extolled the virtues

01:37:24   of the idea of physical controls to create muscle memory

01:37:28   so that you don't have to tap around on a screen

01:37:33   that you could feel like it's a little more understandable

01:37:35   in your brain and in your hand and your muscle memory

01:37:38   to take a picture without thinking about it.

01:37:41   Like there's a lot to be said for all of that.

01:37:44   So that's all good, right?

01:37:46   But it's also just kind of pushing it forward.

01:37:48   And that's, screen's a little bit bigger,

01:37:51   battery life's a little bit better.

01:37:53   Like we're not in an era where from year to year,

01:37:56   the iPhone is gonna blow you away.

01:37:58   There are gonna be moments where there's a big change,

01:38:01   but this was not that.

01:38:04   Apple Watch, I think it's really interesting

01:38:09   how they continue to evolve the Apple Watch without,

01:38:13   like 10 years ago, they announced it.

01:38:14   If you showed them the Apple Watch of today,

01:38:17   the Series 10, 10 years ago,

01:38:20   I think people would be like,

01:38:21   "Huh, it still looks like that, huh?"

01:38:24   Like they've evolved it a lot over the ensuing 10 years,

01:38:29   but still recognizably the Apple Watch.

01:38:32   It's not radically changed in almost any way.

01:38:36   It's bigger screen, smaller border, thinner.

01:38:40   There are lots of things about it,

01:38:41   bigger in some dimensions, but it is,

01:38:46   I think the Series 10 looks really good,

01:38:50   but I think it's funny that it looks really good

01:38:52   despite the fact that they just keep creeping with it.

01:38:57   Like they don't,

01:38:58   it's not like they had the same Apple Watch for five years

01:39:01   and then they unveiled a whole new Apple Watch

01:39:03   that completely blew you away

01:39:04   and then they kept that for another five years.

01:39:06   Apple Watch is more just like every couple of years,

01:39:09   it just gets a little bit bigger, a little bit better.

01:39:12   And this year with that plus adding sleep apnea

01:39:16   without actually adding any new sensors,

01:39:19   that's also really interesting.

01:39:20   So yeah, it's a super important event

01:39:25   because of what the iPhone means to the world

01:39:30   in terms of being a market,

01:39:33   and getting AirPods in line as well

01:39:37   is really good for them and Apple Watch.

01:39:40   But like in many ways it's more important for the world

01:39:44   than it is for those of us

01:39:46   who are watching Apple more closely

01:39:48   because it is sort of what we thought

01:39:50   and it is not the revolutionary year,

01:39:53   it is just some more evolution,

01:39:55   but there's some good stuff there.

01:39:56   I think in the end though,

01:39:58   isn't this what it's really about?

01:40:00   Is in the end it's about Apple intelligence

01:40:03   and waiting for Apple intelligence.

01:40:04   And so much of this announcement

01:40:06   is getting these phones ready for Apple intelligence

01:40:09   because that's a strategic future for Apple,

01:40:11   that's a strategic direction for them.

01:40:14   Even though it's not out yet

01:40:15   and it won't even start rolling out until next month,

01:40:18   it's still where they're putting all their chips right now.

01:40:20   And so I think that's interesting,

01:40:22   but it's also wait and see

01:40:24   because these phones are designed specifically

01:40:26   for Apple intelligence, okay, but it's not here yet.

01:40:29   We're all still waiting for it to arrive

01:40:33   and it's gonna take time for it to roll out,

01:40:36   years really before it entirely rolls out.

01:40:39   So the jury's still out on that.

01:40:41   So it's a weird time, right?

01:40:42   It's just, it's a weird time.

01:40:43   - So we've never had before,

01:40:45   like essentially new iPhone comes out,

01:40:48   but the newest version of iOS is like months away.

01:40:53   Where like most of what is in iOS 18 is Apple intelligence.

01:40:58   Right, like if we look at the overall feature set

01:41:02   of like what are the biggest feature set,

01:41:03   like feature jumps that they're making, it's that.

01:41:06   And so the new iPhone comes

01:41:07   and it's gonna get some new stuff, sure.

01:41:10   But then the biggest features in the iOS 18 cycle,

01:41:13   from Apple's perspective at least,

01:41:15   we don't even, we don't know when they're coming,

01:41:18   but like we're gonna get a drip free to them

01:41:20   over the next six months or whatever.

01:41:22   It's just like an interesting time to be in, right?

01:41:25   Like I completely agree with you.

01:41:27   It's like a very peculiar thing.

01:41:29   Like we built these phones from the ground up

01:41:32   for these new features and none of them are there

01:41:35   on the day they go on sale.

01:41:37   Really weird.

01:41:39   Yeah, I mean, maybe as soon as 10 days, 11 days later,

01:41:44   we don't know, a few weeks later,

01:41:47   but not on the day they go on sale, for sure.

01:41:50   All right, next week is the show's 10th anniversary.

01:41:56   So go to upgradefeedback.com, send us in your thoughts.

01:42:01   Like we're obviously gonna spend some time

01:42:04   on next week's episode, reflecting on the show

01:42:07   and reflecting on 10 years of upgrade

01:42:08   and 10 years of Six Colors,

01:42:11   because they go hand in hand together.

01:42:13   So send us in your Ask Upgrade questions related to that,

01:42:16   your followup, your feedback,

01:42:17   if you have things you wanna hear us talk about

01:42:19   when reflecting on a decade of this show

01:42:22   and a decade of Six Colors,

01:42:25   'cause those two things will be forever linked.

01:42:28   But also send in your Ask Upgrade questions

01:42:31   for everything related to the event.

01:42:33   I'm sure we'll be spending a bit more time

01:42:35   talking about that next week.

01:42:37   I'll be in Memphis getting ready for the podcast-a-thon.

01:42:41   We'll have more to talk about with that next week too.
