00:03:27 ◼   ► we don't see from the major comic book [TS]

00:03:29 ◼   ► publishers very much anymore which is a [TS]

00:03:31 ◼   ► whole group of brand new characters [TS]

00:03:34 ◼   ► created by a very talented writer and [TS]

00:03:37 ◼   ► the and owned by one of the big comic [TS]

00:03:40 ◼   ► book publishers because the rule now is [TS]

00:03:42 ◼   ► basically don't do this [TS]

00:03:44 ◼   ► look for the bryan cave on should have [TS]

00:03:46 ◼   ► created them in their own universe and [TS]

00:03:47 ◼   ► walked away with all the rights to them [TS]

00:03:49 ◼   ► and sold it to make a movie or a TV show [TS]

00:03:51 ◼   ► but for whatever reason this is part of [TS]

00:03:54 ◼   ► the Marvel Universe and they use that to [TS]

00:03:55 ◼   ► their advantage from time to time but I [TS]

00:03:57 ◼   ► but it's not something that requires [TS]

00:04:00 ◼   ► your knowledge of Marvel Comics history [TS]

00:04:02 ◼   ► it really does read like an original [TS]

00:04:05 ◼   ► work that just happens to be set in the [TS]

00:04:07 ◼   ► Marvel Universe and that's actually one [TS]

00:04:09 ◼   ► of the things I love about it it's [TS]

00:04:10 ◼   ► because of the origin story for the [TS]

00:04:12 ◼   ► comic yeah the the tsunami waves and not [TS]

00:04:15 ◼   ► yeah where they were basically gave if [TS]

00:04:17 ◼   ► we can make comics that are the size [TS]

00:04:19 ◼   ► that girls can put their purse i kid you [TS]

00:04:21 ◼   ► not [TS]

00:04:22 ◼   ► and and make them thinking like manga [TS]

00:04:24 ◼   ► crowd then then we can grab manga and we [TS]

00:04:28 ◼   ► can use these titles to as a bridge into [TS]

00:04:30 ◼   ► the marble verse which is why there are [TS]

00:04:32 ◼   ► actually like sometimes you know like [TS]

00:04:33 ◼   ► the presence of mutants and the [TS]

00:04:35 ◼   ► cloak-and-dagger appears and cloak [TS]

00:04:37 ◼   ► entire yeah and you know captain america [TS]

00:04:39 ◼   ► pops up at the end of it but it was the [TS]

00:04:41 ◼   ► tsunami thing was was a short-lived [TS]

00:04:43 ◼   ► initiative to try to pull in female [TS]

00:04:45 ◼   ► comic readers because this is back this [TS]

00:04:48 ◼   ► is back in the very early audis when [TS]

00:04:50 ◼   ► comic book sales were tanking big time [TS]

00:04:53 ◼   ► and the idea of a comic book was mostly [TS]

00:04:55 ◼   ► a joke and publishers are freaking out [TS]

00:04:57 ◼   ► over declining sales and they very [TS]

00:04:59 ◼   ► correctly discern that one of the [TS]

00:05:01 ◼   ► reasons sales are going to us because [TS]

00:05:02 ◼   ► comets really appealing to females and [TS]

00:05:04 ◼   ► so they thought well we'll just give [TS]

00:05:05 ◼   ► will give them a comic they can fit in [TS]

00:05:07 ◼   ► their purse and tsunami didn't do well [TS]

00:05:10 ◼   ► it like shut it [TS]

00:05:12 ◼   ► the imprint shut down fairly quickly if [TS]

00:05:14 ◼   ► i remember correctly because most girls [TS]

00:05:16 ◼   ► like I don't give a crap it's my [TS]

00:05:18 ◼   ► personal give a crap if it's good [TS]

00:05:19 ◼   ► Rose is good and that's one of the [TS]

00:05:22 ◼   ► reasons it's it's tense bounced around [TS]

00:05:24 ◼   ► the marvel vs little bit but I feel like [TS]

00:05:26 ◼   ► it's been mistreated come by i feel like [TS]

00:05:28 ◼   ► the characters been mistreated compared [TS]

00:05:30 ◼   ► to when they were often their own little [TS]

00:05:31 ◼   ► bubble thing for the first like 18 to 36 [TS]

00:05:34 ◼   ► well you know that this is this is a we [TS]

00:05:36 ◼   ► can talk about this because this is a [TS]

00:05:37 ◼   ► self-contained story and then they sort [TS]

00:05:41 ◼   ► intellectual property of the Marvel [TS]

00:05:42 ◼   ► Universe and can be integrated elsewhere [TS]

00:05:44 ◼   ► but here they get the to get their own [TS]

00:05:45 ◼   ► through line and one of the things I [TS]

00:05:47 ◼   ► really like about issues 1 218 this [TS]

00:05:49 ◼   ► first volume is that it's telling it's [TS]

00:05:52 ◼   ► telling us a story and it's about the [TS]

00:05:54 ◼   ► characters were introduced to and it's a [TS]

00:05:56 ◼   ► great it's a great shot should I explain [TS]

00:05:58 ◼   ► the premise of Runaways now with that [TS]

00:06:00 ◼   ► that makes sense to do [TS]

00:06:02 ◼   ► yeah it's it's the most similar it's the [TS]

00:06:04 ◼   ► most simple of premises in a way I [TS]

00:06:06 ◼   ► imagined that a group of kids discover [TS]

00:06:09 ◼   ► that their parents are super villains I [TS]

00:06:11 ◼   ► mean that's the simplest way to describe [TS]

00:06:13 ◼   ► it and and they do run away from home [TS]

00:06:16 ◼   ► but it turns out that they also have [TS]

00:06:17 ◼   ► special abilities of their own and they [TS]

00:06:20 ◼   ► eventually decided to basically take the [TS]

00:06:23 ◼   ► fight to their parents because if their [TS]

00:06:24 ◼   ► parents are going to be evil [TS]

00:06:26 ◼   ► super-villains then they need to stop [TS]

00:06:27 ◼   ► them to save the world which they have [TS]

00:06:29 ◼   ► the parents are literally plotting to [TS]

00:06:31 ◼   ► history to end all human life on planet [TS]

00:06:35 ◼   ► Earth [TS]

00:06:35 ◼   ► and so they have to stop them and get to [TS]

00:06:38 ◼   ► know each other better because they've [TS]

00:06:39 ◼   ► just been sort of like forced together [TS]

00:06:41 ◼   ► because their parents are friends or it [TS]

00:06:43 ◼   ► turns out conspirators co-conspirators [TS]

00:06:45 ◼   ► and and then the fun begins [TS]

00:06:47 ◼   ► basically and and it's a lot of fun it's [TS]

00:06:50 ◼   ► so smart and so sharpen places too [TS]

00:06:53 ◼   ► oh yeah I am shocked that this hasn't [TS]

00:06:55 ◼   ► been made into a into a movie or a TV [TS]

00:06:57 ◼   ► series i'm like it was supposed to be [TS]

00:06:59 ◼   ► and then it got it you know it turns out [TS]

00:07:02 ◼   ► there making all the other Marvel stuff [TS]

00:07:03 ◼   ► that got pumped and I have got killed [TS]

00:07:05 ◼   ► eventually but there was there was a yes [TS]

00:07:07 ◼   ► plan there was a screenplay and then [TS]

00:07:09 ◼   ► Avengers made a billion dollars and they [TS]

00:07:11 ◼   ► decided that we're gonna ride all of the [TS]

00:07:12 ◼   ► regular characters and yeah [TS]

00:07:16 ◼   ► and although guardians of the galaxy got [TS]

00:07:18 ◼   ► made this one got put into turn around [TS]

00:07:20 ◼   ► and and it's a mystery now about what [TS]

00:07:24 ◼   ► might happen to it and whether but it's [TS]

00:07:26 ◼   ► really it's funny this story is such [TS]

00:07:27 ◼   ► it's such a great story i could not when [TS]

00:07:29 ◼   ► reading it back this weekend in advance [TS]

00:07:32 ◼   ► of this i could not stop thinking about [TS]

00:07:33 ◼   ► what a great film or TV series property [TS]

00:07:37 ◼   ► this is and it's just sitting there it [TS]

00:07:40 ◼   ► would make an excellent CW style series [TS]

00:07:42 ◼   ► sense [TS]

00:07:43 ◼   ► boy what says they don't know I am I [TS]

00:07:44 ◼   ► right laughing because that's it that is [TS]

00:07:46 ◼   ► a good fit you're totally right and I i [TS]

00:07:49 ◼   ► definitely would push for a TV series [TS]

00:07:51 ◼   ► over the movie when I was thinking about [TS]

00:07:54 ◼   ► is when I reread was help freakin smart [TS]

00:07:58 ◼   ► phone and his editors were because this [TS]

00:08:00 ◼   ► this entire series is perfectly pitched [TS]

00:08:03 ◼   ► to the teenage sensibility where you [TS]

00:08:05 ◼   ► know every teenager has them over there [TS]

00:08:07 ◼   ► like off my parents are of the devil or [TS]

00:08:08 ◼   ► what have you and in this case it's the [TS]

00:08:11 ◼   ► actualization of that but by the end of [TS]

00:08:13 ◼   ► it you see how much these parents [TS]

00:08:16 ◼   ► despite being people who have bargains [TS]

00:08:18 ◼   ► to give the earth to ancient alien [TS]

00:08:20 ◼   ► entities you see how much they love [TS]

00:08:22 ◼   ► their kids because that deal they made [TS]

00:08:24 ◼   ► within the dealing with the alien / [TS]

00:08:26 ◼   ► jibran given what you want to come [TS]

00:08:28 ◼   ► earlier was we sweet we prep the world [TS]

00:08:31 ◼   ► for you we get 25 years and in return [TS]

00:08:34 ◼   ► half of us getting mortality and they [TS]

00:08:37 ◼   ► originally like that the group of 12 [TS]

00:08:39 ◼   ► adults they're like fun you know we'll [TS]

00:08:40 ◼   ► both will deal with who gets mortality [TS]

00:08:42 ◼   ► later we have 25 years to scheme against [TS]

00:08:44 ◼   ► each other what happens and then 11 of [TS]

00:08:46 ◼   ► the couple's false pregnant and all six [TS]

00:08:48 ◼   ► couple [TS]

00:08:49 ◼   ► spontaneous basically spontaneous say [TS]

00:08:51 ◼   ► you know what we don't care if we get [TS]

00:08:53 ◼   ► killed at the end of us as long as our [TS]

00:08:54 ◼   ► children get a shot at immortality and [TS]

00:08:56 ◼   ► then at the end of it the parents will [TS]

00:08:58 ◼   ► go down fighting against the people they [TS]

00:08:59 ◼   ► made bargains with but it and I thought [TS]

00:09:01 ◼   ► well it's it's a really smart [TS]

00:09:03 ◼   ► coming-of-age necessary psychic [TS]

00:09:05 ◼   ► separation of parents seeing your [TS]

00:09:07 ◼   ► parents as people seeing the [TS]

00:09:08 ◼   ► unconditional love your parents still [TS]

00:09:10 ◼   ► have for you no matter what i thought [TS]

00:09:11 ◼   ► it's a really psychologically reassuring [TS]

00:09:13 ◼   ► book two kids or rather to teenagers [TS]

00:09:15 ◼   ► it's really smart how he wrote it like [TS]

00:09:17 ◼   ► that where there's a whole lot of who am [TS]

00:09:20 ◼   ► i what am i doing but the same time I [TS]

00:09:21 ◼   ► mean sure their parents are super [TS]

00:09:23 ◼   ► villains but they're they're super [TS]

00:09:24 ◼   ► villains who really love their kids and [TS]

00:09:26 ◼   ► that's reassuring on some level you know [TS]

00:09:28 ◼   ► so maybe for chases parents getting his [TS]

00:09:30 ◼   ► mom loves somebody has dashes get up [TS]

00:09:32 ◼   ► close that is awful but yeah you had to [TS]

00:09:35 ◼   ► have one like that first time we see see [TS]

00:09:37 ◼   ► those two he's getting punched by his [TS]

00:09:39 ◼   ► father his dad [TS]

00:09:40 ◼   ► yeah his dad is basically a he's ease [TS]

00:09:43 ◼   ► his dad would be at home like the hank [TS]

00:09:44 ◼   ► pym universe but i really like i really [TS]

00:09:47 ◼   ► love how how the Creed turn into her [TS]

00:09:50 ◼   ► turned out to be like soap opera stars [TS]

00:09:52 ◼   ► and there's just so many slidable [TS]

00:09:54 ◼   ► there's so many sliding funny touches [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► the dialogue is is his age is age [TS]

00:09:58 ◼   ► realistic and a lot of ways especially [TS]

00:09:59 ◼   ► the kids train code names and they're [TS]

00:10:01 ◼   ► just so hilariously dorky and wrong and [TS]

00:10:03 ◼   ► that is something I love about this book [TS]

00:10:05 ◼   ► the way it plays with the superhero [TS]

00:10:08 ◼   ► tropes through these kids eyes first [TS]

00:10:11 ◼   ► all of them except Alex adopt these [TS]

00:10:13 ◼   ► rather silly code names and by the end [TS]

00:10:16 ◼   ► of the like first volume or the middle [TS]

00:10:18 ◼   ► of the second half of the 18 issues [TS]

00:10:21 ◼   ► everybody pretty much has dropped them [TS]

00:10:23 ◼   ► except except group and she hangs onto [TS]

00:10:25 ◼   ► hers for a while before she finally be [TS]

00:10:27 ◼   ► no throw your hands up in the air as [TS]

00:10:28 ◼   ► well and of course little molly is the [TS]

00:10:31 ◼   ► only one who you know she actually goes [TS]

00:10:33 ◼   ► and makes a costume from the scrap she [TS]

00:10:35 ◼   ► finds around their hideout we know she's [TS]

00:10:37 ◼   ► 11 you know that will be what she would [TS]

00:10:39 ◼   ► think of the others don't bother it's [TS]

00:10:42 ◼   ► all about trying to survive [TS]

00:10:44 ◼   ► since you have that lens of the marvel [TS]

00:10:45 ◼   ► universe because this is setting the [TS]

00:10:47 ◼   ► universe we're superheroes are real [TS]

00:10:49 ◼   ► coming up with code names is is comical [TS]

00:10:53 ◼   ► to also the outsider but not necessarily [TS]

00:10:54 ◼   ► comical to them because they have all [TS]

00:10:56 ◼   ► these these exemplars 22 [TS]

00:10:59 ◼   ► patterned after like the first the [TS]

00:11:00 ◼   ► opening scene we see is you know Alex [TS]

00:11:02 ◼   ► playing some like mo basically that's [TS]

00:11:04 ◼   ► all superheroes right right and so [TS]

00:11:07 ◼   ► having that it's a fact of life there [TS]

00:11:09 ◼   ► right like it's a fact of life that [TS]

00:11:11 ◼   ► there are superheroes and that they you [TS]

00:11:13 ◼   ► know they they have monikers they adopt [TS]

00:11:16 ◼   ► and so you know that makes it perfectly [TS]

00:11:17 ◼   ► natural for them to pattern themselves [TS]

00:11:19 ◼   ► after that even if it does come across [TS]

00:11:21 ◼   ► sounding i really love my personal [TS]

00:11:22 ◼   ► favorite is that I've never forgotten [TS]

00:11:25 ◼   ► the character's name whose sister grim [TS]

00:11:27 ◼   ► yes me go you got me you got me go new [TS]

00:11:30 ◼   ► coaches that because it's RAIM handle I [TS]

00:11:33 ◼   ► was like that's em up [TS]

00:11:34 ◼   ► ok that you have you nailed the teenage [TS]

00:11:36 ◼   ► thing there yeah welcome to 2003 who bet [TS]

00:11:41 ◼   ► like I said you know they pretty much be [TS]

00:11:43 ◼   ► no stop using them fairly quickly as [TS]

00:11:45 ◼   ► well which i think is very in keeping [TS]

00:11:47 ◼   ► with teenagers superhero world being [TS]

00:11:50 ◼   ► their reality notwithstanding because [TS]

00:11:52 ◼   ► you're always trying on the whole point [TS]

00:11:54 ◼   ► that age you're trying on identities and [TS]

00:11:56 ◼   ► trying to figure out who you want to be [TS]

00:11:57 ◼   ► versus you're likely going to end up [TS]

00:11:58 ◼   ► being and and there's that whole psychic [TS]

00:12:01 ◼   ► separation from your parents to and then [TS]

00:12:03 ◼   ► when you find that your parents have [TS]

00:12:04 ◼   ► been operating as the pride and it helps [TS]

00:12:07 ◼   ► their home see supervillain names i just [TS]

00:12:11 ◼   ► really like the fact that they all had [TS]

00:12:12 ◼   ► such different origins to because you've [TS]

00:12:14 ◼   ► got to hear space aliens appear time [TS]

00:12:15 ◼   ► travelers who ended up stranded here [TS]

00:12:17 ◼   ► because of a broken machine a pair of [TS]

00:12:19 ◼   ► dark Wizards a pair of which check all [TS]

00:12:22 ◼   ► the boxes [TS]

00:12:23 ◼   ► yeah yeah a pair of mutants just a penny [TS]

00:12:27 ◼   ► themes and I'm missing one pair of [TS]

00:12:29 ◼   ► genius scientist and it's basically [TS]

00:12:31 ◼   ► calling in every single origin story [TS]

00:12:33 ◼   ► that Marvel has ever had for anyone [TS]

00:12:34 ◼   ► anywhere so you have also you have all [TS]

00:12:37 ◼   ► the classic comic troops who you know [TS]

00:12:39 ◼   ► are are in one reluctant social group [TS]

00:12:42 ◼   ► you and I feel like in in some ways this [TS]

00:12:45 ◼   ► series also asked what happens when [TS]

00:12:47 ◼   ► these people become parents because you [TS]

00:12:49 ◼   ► don't see a lot of plausible depictions [TS]

00:12:51 ◼   ► of parenthood on on like the the capes [TS]

00:12:53 ◼   ► side of the equation but you see here [TS]

00:12:55 ◼   ► with the villains and that kind of [TS]

00:12:57 ◼   ► fascinates me how they did that way i [TS]

00:12:59 ◼   ► just really like how they showed the [TS]

00:13:01 ◼   ► development of both the parents over [TS]

00:13:02 ◼   ► time and the kids over time to [TS]

00:13:04 ◼   ► especially the kids [TS]

00:13:05 ◼   ► yes because the openings are so so very [TS]

00:13:07 ◼   ► cliche it it's like you said they're [TS]

00:13:10 ◼   ► taking all the boxes because you've got [TS]

00:13:12 ◼   ► the the folks who started out as petty [TS]

00:13:14 ◼   ► thieves are the ones who are you know [TS]
