The Incomparable

324: Pants-Wearing Dragons

00:00:03   the incomparable number 324 October 2060 [TS]

00:00:11   welcome back everybody to be [TS]

00:00:13   uncomfortable i'm your host Jason L this [TS]

00:00:15   is a special edition of our comic book [TS]

00:00:17   club we this time though it rather than [TS]

00:00:19   talking about one specific comic we're [TS]

00:00:21   gonna talk about a lot of comics there's [TS]

00:00:22   a service that's made available by [TS]

00:00:24   Marvel Comics called marvel unlimited [TS]

00:00:26   it's a pretty good deal they have a ten [TS]

00:00:28   dollar a month plan but they've also got [TS]

00:00:30   a 69 dollar-a-year plan and you get to [TS]

00:00:32   read as much as you like from a catalog [TS]

00:00:35   of they see more than 17,000 at this [TS]

00:00:38   point marvel comics I've been a [TS]

00:00:40   subscriber for a few years now because I [TS]

00:00:42   realized that I you can read like a very [TS]

00:00:45   small number of comics like 20 comics [TS]

00:00:47   and it pays for itself if you buy the [TS]

00:00:49   year so we thought we would do and i was [TS]

00:00:51   inspired a little bit by a conversation [TS]

00:00:53   I had with my co-host from upgrade my [TS]

00:00:55   curly who was wondering about getting [TS]

00:00:58   into comics we've also heard this from [TS]

00:00:59   some other people like if I got marvel [TS]

00:01:01   unlimited what what should I read [TS]

00:01:03   because there's 17,000 comics to choose [TS]

00:01:06   from so I've assembled a panel comic [TS]

00:01:08   readers we're going to help me in draft [TS]

00:01:10   form to suggest things that you could [TS]

00:01:12   read on Marvel unlimited or if you [TS]

00:01:15   prefer to buy or go back and get back [TS]

00:01:17   issues you could do that too but I think [TS]

00:01:18   Marvel unlimited is not brought to you [TS]

00:01:19   by Marvel unlimited I do think it's a [TS]

00:01:21   pretty good deal if you think you're [TS]

00:01:22   going to read more than 20 comics in a [TS]

00:01:24   year anyway joining me and i'm going to [TS]

00:01:26   introduce them in the order in which [TS]

00:01:27   they're going to pick as randomly [TS]

00:01:29   selected by random.org first place miser [TS]

00:01:33   hi how are you I was not expecting to a [TS]

00:01:36   free win by a longshot random daughter [TS]

00:01:38   likes you and wants you to pick for so [TS]

00:01:40   get ready for that [TS]

00:01:41   alright alright I'll picking second will [TS]

00:01:45   be Monty Ashley hi Monty night Jason ram [TS]

00:01:48   dog like you okay well thanks random.org [TS]

00:01:51   you're all right to picking third is [TS]

00:01:54   chipset earth hardship [TS]

00:01:55   oh thank god i'm not the last one but [TS]

00:01:57   I'm always last but picking between chip [TS]

00:02:00   and me is is two young boys us [TS]

00:02:02   xlc or true believer I hope not hate [TS]

00:02:06   your subscription fees thats painted [TS]

00:02:08   keep a credit card on file should we be [TS]

00:02:11   facing front I've never clear face front [TS]

00:02:14   true believers should be facing front [TS]

00:02:16   that's the only way only way to face [TS]

00:02:18   luckily that's where my face always is [TS]

00:02:20   alright so with that with the idea being [TS]

00:02:22   that we're essentially building a little [TS]

00:02:24   bit of a comic book reading list of [TS]

00:02:25   people have things that they can try [TS]

00:02:26   especially if they sign up for Marvel [TS]

00:02:28   unlimited even if you put down ten bucks [TS]

00:02:30   for one month you could give it a go and [TS]

00:02:33   they often have sales so that's the [TS]

00:02:35   premise here before we get started with [TS]

00:02:38   the pics i thought we would we should at [TS]

00:02:40   least talk about the service when this [TS]

00:02:41   started it was all in a web browser on [TS]

00:02:44   computers in and it used flash and the [TS]

00:02:47   big moment of change for them was that [TS]

00:02:49   they ended up building a mobile version [TS]

00:02:51   that was a viewable on tablets [TS]

00:02:53   especially originally it was very weird [TS]

00:02:57   and it was sort of like a web-based view [TS]

00:03:00   inside of a nap and wasn't very good [TS]

00:03:03   it's it's better now although i would [TS]

00:03:05   never call it best-in-class by a long [TS]

00:03:07   shot [TS]

00:03:08   it's sort of i was saying before we got [TS]

00:03:10   started it's sort of now it's gone from [TS]

00:03:13   being sort of survivable and and and all [TS]

00:03:17   that to being kind of okay but I [TS]

00:03:20   wouldn't say that it's its [TS]

00:03:22   state-of-the-art in any way in terms of [TS]

00:03:24   in terms of its a its app interface on [TS]

00:03:27   an iPad let's say no it it's it's a [TS]

00:03:30   work-in-progress you could in fact say [TS]

00:03:32   that the product itself is a draft Lou [TS]

00:03:35   interesting light i would say that it [TS]

00:03:36   the app has gotten progressively better [TS]

00:03:39   over time but still i'm not sure i would [TS]

00:03:42   say it was good i think it's just yeah [TS]

00:03:44   it does keep improving it isn't [TS]

00:03:46   abandoned every time they do an update [TS]

00:03:49   there seems to be something that they [TS]

00:03:51   took off that is one of the things they [TS]

00:03:53   needed to do but it's still got a ways [TS]

00:03:56   to go [TS]

00:03:56   I think well to be clear the content [TS]

00:03:58   inside the app is great and that kinda [TS]

00:04:01   elevates the bad app it's wrapped in a [TS]

00:04:04   Maasai man often on subscriber to marvel [TS]

00:04:06   limited and one of the reasons it's [TS]

00:04:07   often on is because i have a difficult [TS]

00:04:12   time with the experience sensitive so [TS]

00:04:14   radically different from reading a comic [TS]

00:04:15   that you're holding in your hands are [TS]

00:04:17   the end I can't organize things the way [TS]

00:04:20   I want to [TS]

00:04:21   that's one of my major frustrations with [TS]

00:04:23   this is I can't is I can't group issues [TS]

00:04:26   bye-bye [TS]

00:04:28   I can group them by x crossover special [TS]

00:04:30   event or resource them by author [TS]

00:04:32   research them chronologically the way i [TS]

00:04:34   would like to yes [TS]

00:04:35   and that bugs me i should be able to i [TS]

00:04:38   should be able to put stuff in a library [TS]

00:04:40   and then filtered any one of a number of [TS]

00:04:42   ways and then put together that way I [TS]

00:04:44   can't do that drives me bananas so i'm [TS]

00:04:47   very new to marvel unlimited I'm a I'm a [TS]

00:04:50   die-hard comiXology a fan and I read the [TS]

00:04:54   end it and it is such a smooth polished [TS]

00:04:56   product and then yeah jumping into [TS]

00:04:58   unlimited you try to search for creators [TS]

00:05:01   and some of the creator's aren't listed [TS]

00:05:03   some of the books pages are out of order [TS]

00:05:06   they do their best to try to sort [TS]

00:05:11   storylines that ran in between different [TS]

00:05:14   books but it doesn't always work and [TS]

00:05:17   like you said Lee so you can't sort it [TS]

00:05:19   yourself for your own satisfaction so I [TS]

00:05:22   keep reminding myself as I use this past [TS]

00:05:25   in the immortal words of plucky duck you [TS]

00:05:26   know but don't complain it's free it's [TS]

00:05:28   not it's not free but every individual [TS]

00:05:31   comic that you read it is free [TS]

00:05:33   once you once you subscribe yeah yeah [TS]

00:05:36   trade-offs and the metadata is better [TS]

00:05:38   also better than it used to be but again [TS]

00:05:40   yeah not i would say not good but better [TS]

00:05:43   than it used to be you can find more [TS]

00:05:45   things you did it used to be that a lot [TS]

00:05:47   of the covers didn't show up at all or [TS]

00:05:49   they were the wrong covers they're [TS]

00:05:50   mostly the right covers now if you know [TS]

00:05:53   yes [TS]

00:05:53   you still got things where the [TS]

00:05:55   publication date isn't accurate at all [TS]

00:05:57   yes not even matter of it being a little [TS]

00:06:00   bit off but it will be you know they [TS]

00:06:02   issued 300 of x-force from 1978 or [TS]

00:06:05   something [TS]

00:06:06   one of my persistent feature requests [TS]

00:06:10   that i wanted so so badly tying into at [TS]

00:06:12   least was saying is back in the days of [TS]

00:06:15   of itunes and the the itunes music store [TS]

00:06:18   low those hello days many years ago [TS]

00:06:20   there were there were these custom [TS]

00:06:23   playlists that you could just make [TS]

00:06:26   available on the iTunes Store and it [TS]

00:06:27   would be hey it's so and so's mix of all [TS]

00:06:29   these songs that you can pay money for [TS]

00:06:30   oh wow that's great i would love to be [TS]

00:06:33   able to you know be a user create [TS]

00:06:36   reading orders for different things [TS]

00:06:38   whether it's events for my own purposes [TS]

00:06:40   whether it's ok you want to die i want i [TS]

00:06:44   want better metadata so that i can use [TS]

00:06:46   it better so that they can use it better [TS]

00:06:48   it's it there's so much potential still [TS]

00:06:51   that that needs to be unlocked out of [TS]

00:06:53   this thing and the the big one of the [TS]

00:06:56   big hang-ups that I have as somebody who [TS]

00:06:58   doesn't travel a whole time like I'm not [TS]

00:07:01   getting on a plane for three hours on a [TS]

00:07:02   regular basis but I know that people do [TS]

00:07:04   and that's one of the reasons that [TS]

00:07:05   people like having access to all the [TS]

00:07:08   stuff and if you don't have internet [TS]

00:07:09   access it is the upper limit still 610 [TS]

00:07:12   well it's 12x12 ok so so the very least [TS]

00:07:16   you can put 12 issues of whatever on [TS]

00:07:20   your device and have them with you [TS]

00:07:22   offline but you have to make all of [TS]

00:07:24   those decisions right away and that's [TS]

00:07:28   what you're stuck with pretty much and [TS]

00:07:30   you have to check them out so they can [TS]

00:07:31   check something else back in and it's [TS]

00:07:33   just it that that's insanely frustrating [TS]

00:07:35   to me because it feels like a layer of [TS]

00:07:38   drm that is not actually protecting [TS]

00:07:40   against anything as easy as it is and [TS]

00:07:44   has been for a long time for people to [TS]

00:07:46   steal stuff I just don't like they take [TS]

00:07:48   advantage of the medium the advantage [TS]

00:07:50   that you have with digital content [TS]

00:07:51   digital comics / the print version is [TS]

00:07:54   that with digital comics you can in [TS]

00:07:56   theory i like the zooming in and out of [TS]

00:07:57   panels like for people who are really [TS]

00:07:59   into the art of the comic that's [TS]

00:08:00   fantastic because you get to see it that [TS]

00:08:03   said as somebody who read scott mccloud [TS]

00:08:06   river for informative a hinge the layout [TS]

00:08:09   of panels on a page are often a really [TS]

00:08:11   important story telling element and so [TS]

00:08:13   when you do the comic zoomin zoom-out [TS]

00:08:14   it's kind of challenging to balance the [TS]

00:08:16   storytelling elements and I feel that [TS]

00:08:19   with digital comics you really have to [TS]

00:08:21   find a way to embrace the medium and [TS]

00:08:24   there's no way to do like it drives me [TS]

00:08:27   crazy that in the older comics when they [TS]

00:08:29   meant when they cross reference stuff [TS]

00:08:31   that happened other issues you can [TS]

00:08:32   automatically click and have it come up [TS]

00:08:34   oh yeah yeah I would love to be able to [TS]

00:08:37   hyperlink or drill down in comics like [TS]

00:08:39   that there's no reason why you shouldn't [TS]

00:08:41   be able to do that see issue 23 for more [TS]

00:08:44   on dr. drew it or something right [TS]

00:08:46   yeah or or you know for example i'm [TS]

00:08:48   thinking about the annuals are like as [TS]

00:08:50   established and in in New Mutants number [TS]

00:08:52   five ed and then they should be able to [TS]

00:08:55   click to that panel in the mutants [TS]

00:08:56   number [TS]

00:08:56   five and have the person's women out [TS]

00:08:58   there is no reason why you can't be able [TS]

00:08:59   to do hyper linking or have a pop-up [TS]

00:09:01   window or something that lets you later [TS]

00:09:04   the information um otherwise honestly [TS]

00:09:08   like what if i'm reading a pilot trade [TS]

00:09:09   paperbacks and say it's the mutants [TS]

00:09:11   classics which are which are now out in [TS]

00:09:13   trade if if there isn't like that in in [TS]

00:09:17   in trade number four I can go and reach [TS]

00:09:19   over and grab issue number to flip back [TS]

00:09:21   and find it like it's ridiculous that i [TS]

00:09:23   can do that with a bunch of books and I [TS]

00:09:25   cannot do that with a digital archive I [TS]

00:09:29   think that's there at this point I think [TS]

00:09:30   that's the number one we're number one [TS]

00:09:32   problem I mean I i realize that there's [TS]

00:09:34   a huge archive [TS]

00:09:35   oh yeah it's huge but the idea that they [TS]

00:09:37   could they could take this metadata and [TS]

00:09:38   they could interlink it and that I mean [TS]

00:09:40   on the web you can find reading whole [TS]

00:09:42   reading list for four characters and [TS]

00:09:44   comics where you can follow them through [TS]

00:09:45   and it's all in continuity and you can [TS]

00:09:47   go for events and all of these things [TS]

00:09:49   have been done and then on the the the [TS]

00:09:53   Marvel unlimited app there it's very [TS]

00:09:55   limited what they offer nobody else can [TS]

00:09:57   offer you can't build your own and that [TS]

00:10:00   that's the I mean I think that's [TS]

00:10:01   obviously the next step because some of [TS]

00:10:03   this stuff works by far the best when [TS]

00:10:06   it's a when it's done like that it when [TS]

00:10:09   it's all interleave together let's start [TS]

00:10:11   the drive Lisa what's what's your first [TS]

00:10:12   choice of something that people should [TS]

00:10:14   read so my first choice is actually tied [TS]

00:10:18   into Squirrel Girl the I've really [TS]

00:10:20   enjoyed the revival of the that the [TS]

00:10:23   attractions of the successful launch of [TS]

00:10:25   the solo book under ryan underwrite [TS]

00:10:29   North America Henderson it's a great [TS]

00:10:31   book on a lot of levels it's family [TS]

00:10:33   friendly enough where I can reach little [TS]

00:10:34   kids and then I can go back and reread [TS]

00:10:36   it might check over the notes the bottom [TS]

00:10:38   and I got curious about the back history [TS]

00:10:41   and use the search engine and opt-in and [TS]

00:10:43   I want to direct people's attention to [TS]

00:10:46   New Avengers number 15 where they [TS]

00:10:48   attempt to break out the sexiest for all [TS]

00:10:51   girl as the nanny for luke cage and [TS]

00:10:55   jessica jones and everything about this [TS]

00:10:59   issue from her using an army of [TS]

00:11:01   squirrels to fight Wolverine to dealing [TS]

00:11:03   with robot Nazis to also taking care of [TS]

00:11:06   a child at the same time is [TS]

00:11:07   unintentionally hilarious and [TS]

00:11:09   it is so of a period like it just [TS]

00:11:11   screams early Audis and it's very of a [TS]

00:11:14   period and it's hilarious by brian [TS]

00:11:16   michael bendis that's the same issue [TS]

00:11:17   where it's in its heavily I would say [TS]

00:11:19   not heavily implied but Triple [TS]

00:11:21   underlined and highlighted that [TS]

00:11:23   Wolverine and squirrel girl you know the [TS]

00:11:29   past have a past [TS]

00:11:31   that's the term that's the term that's [TS]

00:11:32   the family-friendly term yeah I I kind [TS]

00:11:35   of like kind of love that gathers its [TS]

00:11:37   what i really enjoy is how schoolgirl [TS]

00:11:39   has all these connections with the the [TS]

00:11:41   Alpha figures of the marble heat and [TS]

00:11:44   it's taken this long but this Doreen [TS]

00:11:46   Green has literally nothing to do with [TS]

00:11:48   ryan North conception of her and as it [TS]

00:11:51   and so the reason i recommended at first [TS]

00:11:53   is if you are a fan of the ryenorath [TS]

00:11:55   growing you've been mainlining that for [TS]

00:11:56   well as as we have been around my house [TS]

00:11:58   i'm going back and reading this is [TS]

00:12:01   really hilarious and it also provides a [TS]

00:12:04   handy time capsule of exactly how mood [TS]

00:12:07   takes some marvel stuff was in the earth [TS]

00:12:08   yachties as well where you're like [TS]

00:12:10   that's what you're doing now huh [TS]

00:12:12   and I went to a wormhole with the fear [TS]

00:12:14   itself event that they did but anyway [TS]

00:12:17   this is a pretty funny standalone issue [TS]

00:12:18   from oh my god what they do is grow real [TS]

00:12:21   thing and it's also if you've been [TS]

00:12:22   watching normal TV it's interesting to [TS]

00:12:24   see how they've had a flush out jessica [TS]

00:12:26   jones and luke cage as a pair of [TS]

00:12:28   functioning parents there too and I [TS]

00:12:31   think that relationship is kind of [TS]

00:12:32   fascinating to look at in light of how [TS]

00:12:34   they've relaunched the jessica jones [TS]

00:12:36   book recently as well so new avengers 15 [TS]

00:12:38   you don't even have to know anything [TS]

00:12:40   about the like New Avengers 1 through 14 [TS]

00:12:42   this this works fine as a standalone as [TS]

00:12:44   well but it's a it's a funny little on [TS]

00:12:47   snapshot of the history that was which [TS]

00:12:49   gets even funnier if you are currently [TS]

00:12:52   steeped in the marvel that is right now [TS]

00:12:54   ok Monty Europe alright i thought i was [TS]

00:12:58   going to get sniped but i did not i am [TS]

00:13:00   picking the current the unbeatable [TS]

00:13:03   squirrel girl run in fact haha [TS]

00:13:05   in fact i'm gonna pick both of the [TS]

00:13:07   unbeatable schoolgirl runs because in [TS]

00:13:11   there was this title the unbeatable [TS]

00:13:13   schoolgirl it ran for eight issues and [TS]

00:13:16   then marblehead a relaunch of everything [TS]

00:13:18   all new all different and a new [TS]

00:13:20   unbeatable schoolgirl [TS]

00:13:22   started up exactly the same still [TS]

00:13:25   written by Ryan or still drawn by Erica [TS]

00:13:26   Anderson still delightful it is super [TS]

00:13:30   fun in every panel Doreen is a great [TS]

00:13:34   character and as it says in the title [TS]

00:13:38   she's unbeatable she's taken down while [TS]

00:13:41   she's taking down Galactus he's taking [TS]

00:13:43   down an iron man shaking out all of the [TS]

00:13:45   Avengers huh [TS]

00:13:47   she's great colitis the galactics one is [TS]

00:13:49   pretty special how that how that story [TS]

00:13:51   is told that they all say they come to [TS]

00:13:54   an understanding will have to think [TS]

00:13:55   she's not a fight first superhero she [TS]

00:13:58   always tries to reason with them that I [TS]

00:13:59   love her tangling with dr. damn uh huh [TS]

00:14:01   so that's my pic it's a current series [TS]

00:14:04   now it's just such a great series so [TS]

00:14:06   there's not much of it there but there's [TS]

00:14:08   more [TS]

00:14:09   just stick around more issues come up [TS]

00:14:11   every time that's right i do love that [TS]

00:14:13   they normally try to identify which [TS]

00:14:14   volume of a comic that's got multiple [TS]

00:14:17   numbers by the year and of course [TS]

00:14:19   unbeatable squirrel girl has two number [TS]

00:14:21   ones in the same year and howard the [TS]

00:14:23   duck has the exact same problem all of [TS]

00:14:25   the animals superheroes all of them you [TS]

00:14:27   know there's 2015 and then there's 2015 [TS]

00:14:29   forward version but they're both they're [TS]

00:14:33   yeah they're both great chip what's your [TS]

00:14:36   pic first pic well my first pick is not [TS]

00:14:39   going to surprise anyone because this is [TS]

00:14:41   a comic book that has moved me to song [TS]

00:14:44   in the past i am going to reach into the [TS]

00:14:47   eighties and pull out for issues 337 to [TS]

00:14:52   382 the famous run of four written by [TS]

00:14:56   walter simonson that I this is this is [TS]

00:15:02   the thing that really turned me into a [TS]

00:15:05   comics fan again after the your [TS]

00:15:08   traditional read comics when you're a [TS]

00:15:10   kid [TS]

00:15:11   stop reading comics one of your nerdy [TS]

00:15:13   friends in junior high school says hey I [TS]

00:15:16   still read comics and you start [TS]

00:15:18   puttering around and comic book shops [TS]

00:15:20   and suddenly you find something that yet [TS]

00:15:23   this is a really really long run it's an [TS]

00:15:25   epic story of and it's the first time I [TS]

00:15:30   really think that [TS]

00:15:32   and Moyes is you've got more you've got [TS]

00:15:35   more detailed history on comments you [TS]

00:15:37   may beat me you made correct me on this [TS]

00:15:39   but I think this is the first time that [TS]

00:15:41   Thor really broke away from the jack [TS]

00:15:45   kirby mold to turn into this fusion of [TS]

00:15:49   homage to the real classic Norse myths [TS]

00:15:54   mashed up with a marvel super science [TS]

00:15:57   you get the introduction of beta ray [TS]

00:15:59   bill and the first storyline you get the [TS]

00:16:01   elimination of the Don Blake alter ego [TS]

00:16:04   and you immediately get a 12 to 15 issue [TS]

00:16:09   arc that is Ragnarok the fall of the [TS]

00:16:12   gods and then you keep on going right up [TS]

00:16:15   until the end of this multi-year run [TS]

00:16:18   with the thor fighting and dying against [TS]

00:16:22   the Midgard serpent or does e it's it is [TS]

00:16:26   remarkable it is epic [TS]

00:16:28   it's a little awkward reading in the [TS]

00:16:31   21st century because this is that a sort [TS]

00:16:35   of a liminal time in marvel comics when [TS]

00:16:37   the UH when the storytelling was [TS]

00:16:40   becoming super ambitious and yet [TS]

00:16:43   characters were constantly monologuing [TS]

00:16:46   they were constantly describing what [TS]

00:16:47   they were going to do this was before [TS]

00:16:49   they moved all the stuff to thought [TS]

00:16:51   bubbles it well before caption caption [TS]

00:16:54   narration is the character who most [TS]

00:16:57   narrate everything he does [TS]

00:16:59   oh yeah oh yeah and but did this this [TS]

00:17:01   time bigtime but it is it if you're into [TS]

00:17:05   epic long-form storytelling uh this is [TS]

00:17:09   this is I think I don't know that Marvel [TS]

00:17:12   ever did it any better [TS]

00:17:14   walter simonson is a great writer and [TS]

00:17:17   this is tailor-made for Marvel unlimited [TS]

00:17:19   because it you know it the whole run is [TS]

00:17:21   there and you you've already paid for it [TS]

00:17:24   this is this is this is 50 odd comics [TS]

00:17:28   you're going to make that back it just [TS]

00:17:31   off the subscription in no time [TS]

00:17:33   I feel like I feel like this is where I [TS]

00:17:35   do my iron chef style of focus on [TS]

00:17:37   interjection has ideas I I could not [TS]

00:17:41   agree more with the with the with chips [TS]

00:17:43   ons a [TS]

00:17:44   assertions about Walter Simon's a [TS]

00:17:46   three-run it's it's really still held up [TS]

00:17:49   as one of the great classic runs and [TS]

00:17:52   it's from an era where you would get a [TS]

00:17:53   creative team whether a team of a writer [TS]

00:17:55   and an artist or a writer artist in the [TS]

00:17:57   case Walt where they did and [TS]

00:17:59   uninterruptedly five years of something [TS]

00:18:01   with no brakes with no fillings with no [TS]

00:18:03   late issues and just got the work done [TS]

00:18:06   and it i mean this run a you mentioned [TS]

00:18:10   the introduction of beta ray bill [TS]

00:18:11   incredibly controversial the time and [TS]

00:18:13   there was no Twitter their blogs are no [TS]

00:18:15   forms there was a reserved character [TS]

00:18:17   that really picked up the hangman [TS]

00:18:19   exactly and that there was nowhere for [TS]

00:18:21   phantom to go exploding outrage file [TS]

00:18:24   lawsuits put in a change.org petition [TS]

00:18:26   any of that kind of stuff everybody [TS]

00:18:28   hated beta ray bill and then a couple [TS]

00:18:31   months later buddy love better a bill [TS]

00:18:33   and he was awesome and he was great why [TS]

00:18:35   is there a t-shirt of this and all my [TS]

00:18:37   god is the greatest thing ever [TS]

00:18:39   why isn't he in the comic book all the [TS]

00:18:40   time let's move on that's a lot of Thor [TS]

00:18:42   and a lot of beta ray bill I'm not [TS]

00:18:44   surprised ship by the way I'm not you [TS]

00:18:45   even a little bit surprised i've gotta [TS]

00:18:47   be me Moyes is what would you like to [TS]

00:18:49   choose now when we started I asked you [TS]

00:18:52   what the ground rules are for this and [TS]

00:18:54   I'm i am I i want to tempt fate because [TS]

00:18:57   to a I assume that nobody else selected [TS]

00:19:01   something that would be covered in this [TS]

00:19:03   so my pic is the entire history of [TS]

00:19:07   Marvel crossover events [TS]

00:19:09   ok are those on Marvel unlimited the [TS]

00:19:11   vast majority of them are and Marvel [TS]

00:19:13   limited is the reason that i was able to [TS]

00:19:15   catch up on a bunch of them when on at [TS]

00:19:17   four mentioned comics podcast my co-host [TS]

00:19:19   and I said hey let's do a two-episode [TS]

00:19:21   thing just cover all the crossovers for [TS]

00:19:23   both companies just hit the high points [TS]

00:19:24   and then like 13 installments later we [TS]

00:19:28   got all the way through all of them [TS]

00:19:29   because marvel unlimited allowed us to [TS]

00:19:31   reread pretty much all of them even the [TS]

00:19:33   super obscure ones that have never been [TS]

00:19:35   collected in trade or have been out of [TS]

00:19:37   print in trade for over a decade [TS]

00:19:39   one of my favorites among them if i were [TS]

00:19:42   to pick out one is from the period of [TS]

00:19:45   Marvel bankruptcy called [TS]

00:19:47   maximum-security written by Kurt music [TS]

00:19:49   that it takes the the idea that all of [TS]

00:19:53   the different galactic empires and so on [TS]

00:19:55   that Earth has has run afoul of have [TS]

00:19:58   have had full well enough of all of [TS]

00:20:01   Earth superheroes using the galaxy as [TS]

00:20:04   there is their battleground and have [TS]

00:20:06   decided to isolate earth set up a [TS]

00:20:09   barrier so that nobody can get [TS]

00:20:10   off-planet and dump all of their [TS]

00:20:12   criminals onto earth and turn earth into [TS]

00:20:15   the galaxies penal colony Ronan the [TS]

00:20:18   accusers and a bunch of characters that [TS]

00:20:19   people know a lot better now are in [TS]

00:20:21   there but you can you can read this it's [TS]

00:20:23   very short [TS]

00:20:24   it's on Marvel unlimited and it's one of [TS]

00:20:26   my favorite Marvel crossover events now [TS]

00:20:27   that I actually know that existed [TS]

00:20:29   it's a great way to to to dip into a [TS]

00:20:34   crossover event that somebody said well [TS]

00:20:36   this is kind of important or this is you [TS]

00:20:38   know what to really understand what's [TS]

00:20:40   going on spider-man you need to go back [TS]

00:20:41   to acts of vengeance some of these [TS]

00:20:44   crossover events have not been again you [TS]

00:20:47   know going back to previous comments not [TS]

00:20:49   reprinted regularly not kept in print [TS]

00:20:52   reliably and the beautiful hardcover [TS]

00:20:54   editions of them you can't find them for [TS]

00:20:57   less than four hundred dollars so the [TS]

00:21:01   the thing for me that made marvel [TS]

00:21:03   unlimited incredibly valuable was that I [TS]

00:21:06   didn't have to fork over cash to buy the [TS]

00:21:08   trade paperbacks of these things that i [TS]

00:21:10   may or may not have liked and kind of [TS]

00:21:11   wanted to read mostly for historical or [TS]

00:21:14   relative appreciation but that includes [TS]

00:21:17   the good stuff to you know you've got [TS]

00:21:18   the original secret wars you've got a [TS]

00:21:20   contest of Champions which I consider a [TS]

00:21:23   crossover even though it didn't operate [TS]

00:21:25   the way that modern crossover events do [TS]

00:21:27   it involves 12 / comics but it does in [TS]

00:21:31   fact go all the way back to the first [TS]

00:21:33   real Marvel crossover event which was [TS]

00:21:35   the offender the Avengers defenders war [TS]

00:21:37   the Avengers and defenders involved [TS]

00:21:40   don't look much like the Avengers are [TS]

00:21:42   defenders that anybody's familiar with [TS]

00:21:43   Netflix but that doesn't that doesn't [TS]

00:21:45   that doesn't in any way decrease the [TS]

00:21:48   value of it as a as a historical note [TS]

00:21:51   that would that would curse us for [TS]

00:21:53   decades to come [TS]

00:21:54   so much of Marvel's events are there you [TS]

00:21:57   know it almost impossible to cover [TS]

00:21:59   because they really do want you to buy [TS]

00:22:00   50 different comics or whatever and I of [TS]

00:22:02   you [TS]

00:22:03   I have participated in several of these [TS]

00:22:06   marble crossover events now with with um [TS]

00:22:09   with unlimited again delayed eight [TS]

00:22:11   months or whatever however long they [TS]

00:22:13   they do their time delay and it's kind [TS]

00:22:16   of great when you get the to just sort [TS]

00:22:18   of flick through from issue to issue of [TS]

00:22:21   these big events and if a particular [TS]

00:22:23   issue doesn't do it for you you just [TS]

00:22:25   move on and you don't feel like you got [TS]

00:22:26   ripped off and pay four dollars for some [TS]

00:22:28   tie-in comic there was no good you just [TS]

00:22:30   move to the next one now go read [TS]

00:22:32   powerpack number 10 [TS]

00:22:33   yeah I I remember there was a there was [TS]

00:22:36   a and the the unfortunate thing though [TS]

00:22:38   is there some of those tiny issues like [TS]

00:22:40   there were there were issues of rom [TS]

00:22:41   space night [TS]

00:22:42   yeah we're here to Jason's heart a few [TS]

00:22:45   others that Marvel no longer holds the [TS]

00:22:47   publishing or publishing rights for so [TS]

00:22:49   technically there's some of these [TS]

00:22:50   crossover events that you even if Marvel [TS]

00:22:53   wanted to they wouldn't be able to put [TS]

00:22:55   the digital version of these issues on [TS]

00:22:57   there but like all crossover events it [TS]

00:22:59   kind of doesn't matter you know I [TS]

00:23:01   remember catching up on a bunch of stuff [TS]

00:23:03   from infinity and reading an issue of [TS]

00:23:05   Thunderbolts that had infinity split all [TS]

00:23:08   over the cover but it had the the only [TS]

00:23:11   way in which it actually interacted with [TS]

00:23:13   the crossover event that it was [TS]

00:23:14   ostensibly a tie into was the [TS]

00:23:16   Thunderbolts team was off doing [TS]

00:23:18   something of a new york and oh there's [TS]

00:23:20   some crap happening in the sky [TS]

00:23:22   I don't know what that is let's keep [TS]

00:23:23   going guys and it just didn't touch it [TS]

00:23:25   all the time now that but I yeah I if I [TS]

00:23:30   were to throw three random obscure [TS]

00:23:32   crossover events worth checking-out [TS]

00:23:34   maximum maximum security is definitely [TS]

00:23:37   one accidental is another where they [TS]

00:23:39   take they take the roads galleries of [TS]

00:23:41   different marvel super heroes they all [TS]

00:23:43   get together they say wait a minute [TS]

00:23:45   let's get this straight why are we all [TS]

00:23:47   fighting the same good guys every time [TS]

00:23:49   why don't we rotate the wheel a little [TS]

00:23:51   bit and cause some real havoc for for [TS]

00:23:54   the good guys and it plays out great [TS]

00:23:56   it's funny it was it was a much needed [TS]

00:23:58   shake up the other the other one that i [TS]

00:24:02   would throw out there is is I think [TS]

00:24:04   Avengers vs. x-men reads way better as a [TS]

00:24:08   binge than it did individually issues [TS]

00:24:10   where I did it anyway among a [TS]

00:24:12   month-to-month it played out like an [TS]

00:24:14   episode of dragon ball z [TS]

00:24:15   where it took 20 minutes to advance a [TS]

00:24:17   tenth of a second in actual event time [TS]

00:24:20   and it it it reads way better collected [TS]

00:24:24   so that that's a a more recent not [TS]

00:24:26   remotely as obscure a pic so hopefully I [TS]

00:24:29   broken all the rules and and now we've [TS]

00:24:32   shattered reality and jason has to put [TS]

00:24:34   it back together [TS]

00:24:35   yeah you did tonight was going to be my [TS]

00:24:36   round to pick up secret wars haha i'm [TS]

00:24:40   going to give voices Marvel crossover [TS]

00:24:42   events including maximum-security acts [TS]

00:24:44   of vengeance and AVX if you really want [TS]

00:24:45   to pick secret wars you can we are we're [TS]

00:24:49   gonna finish up the first round with my [TS]

00:24:50   pic i have like 15 things here that I [TS]

00:24:53   could pick but i'm going to start with [TS]

00:24:55   something rather than take one some of [TS]

00:24:57   the more obvious ones i'm going to go a [TS]

00:24:58   little less obvious i'm going to [TS]

00:25:00   recommend people out there check out [TS]

00:25:01   1602 which is an issue miniseries really [TS]

00:25:06   ideal games ya series that neil gaiman [TS]

00:25:09   and it is a beautiful series i liked it [TS]

00:25:13   a lot the idea is basically what if the [TS]

00:25:16   Marvel superheroes existed in the year [TS]

00:25:18   1602 instead of 2002 which was when this [TS]

00:25:22   was written and it's a fascinating [TS]

00:25:25   they're all its just alternate takes on [TS]

00:25:27   characters that you will be familiar [TS]

00:25:29   with and they they behave like you'd [TS]

00:25:32   expect except sometimes they don't and [TS]

00:25:35   it's a very interesting story with i [TS]

00:25:38   would say a satisfying conclusion and [TS]

00:25:41   eight issues very clever [TS]

00:25:44   there are several sequels you don't need [TS]

00:25:46   to read them [TS]

00:25:47   this is this this is the the official [TS]

00:25:49   core of it this is the this is the stuff [TS]

00:25:51   and it was meant to sort of stand-alone [TS]

00:25:53   and I yeah i highly recommend it was [TS]

00:25:56   done basically for I think your game and [TS]

00:25:58   donated all of all of his uh proceeds to [TS]

00:26:02   a was a charity or to a legal defense [TS]

00:26:04   fund or something like that but it was [TS]

00:26:06   part of the way that he got control of [TS]

00:26:08   the character Angela back from Todd 414 [TS]

00:26:13   the full story on that it would take 10 [TS]

00:26:16   million our you go somewhere else and no [TS]

00:26:18   but anyway the result we got was an [TS]

00:26:20   issue miniseries that's pretty good it's [TS]

00:26:21   all Marvel unlimited 1602 so try it out [TS]

00:26:23   that's my back a naughty naughty true [TS]

00:26:25   believer [TS]

00:26:26   indeed he wait until you meet Peter [TS]

00:26:28   Parker movement going on I just really [TS]

00:26:31   like virginia Dare in that series [TS]

00:26:33   uh ok second round will try to pick up [TS]

00:26:35   the pace a little bit or we'll be here [TS]

00:26:37   all night Lisa what do you have my [TS]

00:26:40   second pick is a link to the fact that i [TS]

00:26:45   never really read a whole lot of [TS]

00:26:46   Deadpool the movie came out this year [TS]

00:26:47   and I still haven't watched the movie [TS]

00:26:49   although it's on my DVR and I'm honestly [TS]

00:26:52   just waiting for anywhere i can sit down [TS]

00:26:54   some point into it but i thought well [TS]

00:26:56   one of the reasons i took such pleasure [TS]

00:26:58   in watching The Avengers is because when [TS]

00:27:00   I saw the movie i could go through and [TS]

00:27:01   go okay they got that from ultimate [TS]

00:27:02   adventures they got that from ultimate [TS]

00:27:04   adventure is over and so I'm kind of [TS]

00:27:07   curious i kind of want to watch did pull [TS]

00:27:09   until I understand what they've lifted [TS]

00:27:10   from the comics if anything and and what [TS]

00:27:13   is entirely the invention screenwriters [TS]

00:27:14   and in my for through Deadpool I have [TS]

00:27:18   really been enjoying the one-year run of [TS]

00:27:21   Deadpool Merc with a mouth it's by [TS]

00:27:23   Victor kichler and bong bong choices you [TS]

00:27:26   can correct my pronunciation its bond as [TS]

00:27:28   0 or days oh who does the pencils I [TS]

00:27:30   that's a great question that I don't [TS]

00:27:32   have an answer to anyway long story [TS]

00:27:34   short Deadpool has to go get a bioweapon [TS]

00:27:36   it turns out to be his own zombified [TS]

00:27:38   head from an alternate dimension and in [TS]

00:27:40   doing so he also managed to double-cross [TS]

00:27:42   Hydra a name and it's lunatic it's a [TS]

00:27:45   lunatic series and the thing I like [TS]

00:27:46   about is not only is the story super not [TS]

00:27:50   only the story rollicking it's basically [TS]

00:27:52   a caper the covers on the series are [TS]

00:27:54   worth looking at two because all of them [TS]

00:27:56   are dead pool and zombie takes on [TS]

00:27:58   classic TV or cinema or album imagery [TS]

00:28:01   including silence of the lambs and the [TS]

00:28:03   graduate and pretty woman in Jaws and [TS]

00:28:08   it's just delightful [TS]

00:28:10   I love a comic that doesn't take itself [TS]

00:28:12   too seriously and this one certainly [TS]

00:28:14   doesn't and for people who are like well [TS]

00:28:17   I don't know about more about Deadpool [TS]

00:28:18   but I don't want to commit entirely like [TS]

00:28:19   this is a good way to start [TS]

00:28:21   I have found I don't think any of this [TS]

00:28:23   will show up in the movie and now i [TS]

00:28:25   kinda don't care all right [TS]

00:28:26   deadpool yeah yeah yeahs work with the [TS]

00:28:29   mouth [TS]

00:28:30   deadpool colon work with the mouthiest [TS]

00:28:31   there's like five different Deadpool [TS]

00:28:33   series in there on the list Monty Monty [TS]

00:28:35   you if you needed a formal retraction I [TS]

00:28:37   I'm [TS]

00:28:38   modify my pic to all crossover events [TS]

00:28:40   except for secret wars because it really [TS]

00:28:41   does deserve its own spot [TS]

00:28:43   great then my pic is secret wars what I [TS]

00:28:46   clear what one obviously the one from [TS]

00:28:50   1984 not the recent one [TS]

00:28:52   ok the recent ones awesome that like [TS]

00:28:55   there isn't one but is it historically [TS]

00:28:56   important the way a personification of a [TS]

00:29:00   universe taking a bunch of villains and [TS]

00:29:03   a bunch of heroes [TS]

00:29:04   clapping them on a planet and saying [TS]

00:29:05   okay now fight for 12 issues was of [TS]

00:29:09   course not in 1984 we didn't know what [TS]

00:29:12   the hell we were doing so it was the [TS]

00:29:14   most awesome thing in the world for all [TS]

00:29:16   the heroes and all the villains to be [TS]

00:29:19   just sort of group together and given no [TS]

00:29:21   more motivation than ok fight and there [TS]

00:29:25   was some twists like all that hero he [TS]

00:29:28   turned out to be kind of bad that [TS]

00:29:29   villain he turned out to be sort of good [TS]

00:29:31   it gets really interesting i think [TS]

00:29:33   towards the end this is in fact we're [TS]

00:29:36   spider-man's ridiculous black suit that [TS]

00:29:38   turned into venom comes from yep [TS]

00:29:40   don't just a black suit i'm saying this [TS]

00:29:42   too late the origin of the suit is silly [TS]

00:29:45   that's true he yeah it is some dispenser [TS]

00:29:48   yes and the way the way they did see [TS]

00:29:49   rewards is they all the heroes disappear [TS]

00:29:53   from their books in one month and in the [TS]

00:29:54   next month they all returned say wow [TS]

00:29:56   something that was incredible what [TS]

00:29:57   happened there [TS]

00:29:58   that sure was a secret war and we had to [TS]

00:30:00   watch it for for a year and one of the [TS]

00:30:04   big ones was boys when you find out of [TS]

00:30:06   spider-man got that costume that's going [TS]

00:30:08   to be something and it's like well he [TS]

00:30:09   went into a cave and there was a costume [TS]

00:30:11   it's actually less silly in the movie [TS]

00:30:14   where some alien coupe just drips on it [TS]

00:30:16   yeah I'd forgotten that aspect of it [TS]

00:30:18   because one of the big ones was uh the [TS]

00:30:21   makeup of the Fantastic Four [TS]

00:30:23   yeah that was huge ends up with a [TS]

00:30:25   she-hulk replacing with me [TS]

00:30:27   yeah it was big news at the time and I [TS]

00:30:29   still think it's a lot of fun to just go [TS]

00:30:32   to a simpler time and storytelling where [TS]

00:30:34   you could have lots of fights / issue [TS]

00:30:37   instead of an issue about where the [TS]

00:30:39   people talk about fighting and that an [TS]

00:30:41   issue where they start to fight an issue [TS]

00:30:43   where they continue fighting i do not [TS]

00:30:45   recommend secret worst to know where the [TS]

00:30:47   beyonders comes to earth [TS]

00:30:50   and is taught how to pee by spider-man [TS]

00:30:52   cool he's taught a poop i'm telling you [TS]

00:30:55   i think it's in the spider-man ty [TS]

00:30:57   initiative and I'm sorry that I know [TS]

00:30:58   that so precisely that's entertainment [TS]

00:31:01   if you follow chips recommendation to [TS]

00:31:03   read or you will see some of the beyond [TS]

00:31:05   ER right next to the scenes where Thor [TS]

00:31:08   turned into a frog frog the same issue [TS]

00:31:11   yeah the the original secret wars i love [TS]

00:31:14   how everybody seemed to like [TS]

00:31:16   antagonistically call magneto Maggie [TS]

00:31:18   there's some weird dr. doom stuff in [TS]

00:31:20   there too [TS]

00:31:21   there's there's always some weird dr. do [TS]

00:31:23   stuff I you know one of the only ones [TS]

00:31:26   who says this is ridiculous how can we [TS]

00:31:28   fight back against the situation instead [TS]

00:31:30   of just like their street-level goons [TS]

00:31:33   there or like what do I do [TS]

00:31:35   I'm a villain i feit heroes well there's [TS]

00:31:37   most of the Avengers and the x-men and [TS]

00:31:39   the Fantastic Four [TS]

00:31:40   let's go get a boiler room huh well [TS]

00:31:42   Galactus is standing around rolling is [TS]

00:31:44   enormous sized ship your turn [TS]

00:31:46   um I'm going to pick I want to pick next [TS]

00:31:51   wave agents of hate [TS]

00:31:53   oh I hate you so much right now I'm [TS]

00:31:56   sorry people for skull and crossbone [TS]

00:31:59   symbols in a row that's how I feel right [TS]

00:32:01   now next wave is only 12 issues along i [TS]

00:32:05   could have gone iia it could have gone [TS]

00:32:08   for it could have gone for years as far [TS]

00:32:10   as I'm concerned but maybe it could only [TS]

00:32:11   have lasted this long it's warren ellis [TS]

00:32:13   and stuart immonen taking the absolute [TS]

00:32:16   piss out of the Marvel Universe and [TS]

00:32:20   putting together a group of retread [TS]

00:32:24   heroes and has been heroes including the [TS]

00:32:28   former captain marvel from the Avengers [TS]

00:32:31   Monica Rambeau and machine machine and [TS]

00:32:35   drinking problem who has a drinking [TS]

00:32:36   problem and a guy who they just call the [TS]

00:32:41   captain because his real name is Captain [TS]

00:32:44   censored arm and characters like that [TS]

00:32:48   and they are on the run from a truly [TS]

00:32:52   demented send-up of shield called hate [TS]

00:32:56   and their lunatic leader Colonel Dirk [TS]

00:33:01   anger not Nick Fury [TS]

00:33:03   Dirk anger and the first storyline [TS]

00:33:08   involves the the hideous threat of the [TS]

00:33:13   great kirby dragon Fin Fang Foom [TS]

00:33:16   threatening to put characters in his [TS]

00:33:20   pants and adjust descends from there [TS]

00:33:23   this is an insane beautiful 12 issue [TS]

00:33:27   series about what I have to read this [TS]

00:33:29   and his pants during drinking has pants [TS]

00:33:32   wearing dragons there is it's it's it's [TS]

00:33:34   parentally noted by creators as a [TS]

00:33:36   favorite book of theirs that they wish [TS]

00:33:38   they could bring back and I bet they're [TS]

00:33:39   a dozen people who write for Marvel [TS]

00:33:41   right now who would kill to write a new [TS]

00:33:43   next wave book but only if Pope Warren [TS]

00:33:46   past and and handed over the reins to [TS]

00:33:49   somebody else [TS]

00:33:50   it is so so beloved among creator [TS]

00:33:53   specifically there are some weird [TS]

00:33:55   moments in the wider marvel universe [TS]

00:33:57   where it almost seems like it seems like [TS]

00:33:59   this intersects with the with the MU but [TS]

00:34:03   just just pick it up and read it and [TS]

00:34:06   ignore the rest of the Marvel Universe [TS]

00:34:08   ignore everything else in Marvel [TS]

00:34:10   unlimited just read these 12 issues as a [TS]

00:34:12   whole [TS]

00:34:13   Andy you will giggle yeah you don't have [TS]

00:34:16   to know who any of the characters are at [TS]

00:34:18   all [TS]

00:34:19   there's there's no hype no height [TS]

00:34:20   requirement that roller coaster [TS]

00:34:22   oh at but you better not like broccoli [TS]

00:34:24   no okay good i hate it was that's what's [TS]

00:34:27   your second pic use your pic first pic [TS]

00:34:29   to pick you know hundreds of comics [TS]

00:34:31   across many different events but not see [TS]

00:34:33   what I asked you what the rules were for [TS]

00:34:35   a reason so that i can then bring those [TS]

00:34:38   of time and space i'm going to go much [TS]

00:34:40   more simply you can you can read the [TS]

00:34:42   entirety of Christopher priests [TS]

00:34:44   five-year run on Black Panther which [TS]

00:34:46   began in 1998 on Marvel unlimited and it [TS]

00:34:48   is some of the best superhero comics [TS]

00:34:50   written in the last 20 years if you ask [TS]

00:34:53   me i'm striking that one off my list [TS]

00:34:56   victory is mine but you've got to you've [TS]

00:35:01   got ever k Ross who popped up in captain [TS]

00:35:04   america civil war the movie he's in [TS]

00:35:05   there of course the child the Black [TS]

00:35:07   Panthers in there lots of what continent [TS]

00:35:09   intrigue is in there it is it is a book [TS]

00:35:12   that was born out of Marvel Knights [TS]

00:35:14   which is this for title [TS]

00:35:16   small group that was handed to a couple [TS]

00:35:19   of couple guys named Jack us out and [TS]

00:35:20   jimmy palmiotti who I here still do [TS]

00:35:23   comic books in some form or another [TS]

00:35:24   these days and and this is this is one [TS]

00:35:27   of those four characters that launched [TS]

00:35:29   that imprint that really transformed [TS]

00:35:31   marvel in the late nineties just on the [TS]

00:35:33   verge of the Marvel bankruptcy and [TS]

00:35:35   either the spirit of the marvel alliance [TS]

00:35:37   characters is ok leave these in our box [TS]

00:35:40   and leave us alone and don't tie it into [TS]

00:35:43   your events and don't make us do this [TS]

00:35:45   and don't make us do that and i love the [TS]

00:35:47   12 issue in humans miniseries that was [TS]

00:35:49   part of that i very much enjoyed the run [TS]

00:35:52   of daredevil that started of kevin smith [TS]

00:35:54   and transition over to David Mack and [TS]

00:35:56   various other folks after that point but [TS]

00:35:59   for me the the real here is a great way [TS]

00:36:02   to dig into this character that a lot of [TS]

00:36:04   people are interested in now that he's [TS]

00:36:05   in movies is this really definitive run [TS]

00:36:09   a black panther Reginald Hudlin had a [TS]

00:36:11   great run that came after this one [TS]

00:36:13   it was very good but really when it [TS]

00:36:15   comes down to it if there is a [TS]

00:36:16   definitive run on the character Black [TS]

00:36:18   Panther it is this one barn on all right [TS]

00:36:21   i'm adding that to my list that's great [TS]

00:36:23   okay i'm going to close out round two [TS]

00:36:26   with a i love how we can pick single [TS]

00:36:30   issues or just dozens of issues and it's [TS]

00:36:33   all good it's all part of the whole are [TS]

00:36:36   you setting up for some really odd [TS]

00:36:37   selection only a little bit the nineteen [TS]

00:36:41   seventies the odd-numbered issues i'm [TS]

00:36:45   going to choose a run and not only am I [TS]

00:36:48   going to choose a run by a writer and [TS]

00:36:49   artist i'm going to choose the longest [TS]

00:36:52   continuous run by writer-artist in [TS]

00:36:56   comics which is like you ultimate [TS]

00:36:59   spider-man which began in the year 2000 [TS]

00:37:02   brian brian michael bendis and Mark [TS]

00:37:05   Bagley to which issue should you read [TS]

00:37:07   well start with issue 1 and then you can [TS]

00:37:09   jump off when bag leaves the book in [TS]

00:37:11   issue 111 but I read all of them and [TS]

00:37:15   then you could keep going if you like [TS]

00:37:16   because then Stuart imminent comes in [TS]

00:37:19   and it's pretty great too but I love [TS]

00:37:21   ultimate spider-man i love Bendis [TS]

00:37:23   retelling using modern storytelling [TS]

00:37:26   techniques a lot of the classic stories [TS]

00:37:29   of spider-man [TS]

00:37:29   and yes mønsteret out techniques monte [TS]

00:37:32   means that what took one issue for Steve [TS]

00:37:35   Ditko and Stanley takes like 12 issues [TS]

00:37:39   for her for Bendis exactly but he's [TS]

00:37:42   retelling so much of spider-man that [TS]

00:37:44   sometimes something that lets say bogged [TS]

00:37:47   down spider-man four years and years [TS]

00:37:49   some sort of saga can be retold tighter [TS]

00:37:52   and well it's true it's true with some [TS]

00:37:55   very interesting variations i think that [TS]

00:37:57   the explanation for spider-man's origin [TS]

00:37:59   and how it sort of tied up in Norman [TS]

00:38:01   Osborn's quest to build a super-soldier [TS]

00:38:05   serum and it leads to Norman Osborn [TS]

00:38:08   becoming a very different and far more [TS]

00:38:10   scary [TS]

00:38:11   Green Goblin it is all part of this too [TS]

00:38:14   it is [TS]

00:38:15   yeah it's my favorite spider-man's yeah [TS]

00:38:17   obviously spider-man's my favorite [TS]

00:38:19   superhero but ultimate spider-man is a [TS]

00:38:21   wonderful retailing and modernizing of [TS]

00:38:24   the character while never forgetting [TS]

00:38:26   sort of what what's at the core of [TS]

00:38:27   spider-man the artist beautiful the [TS]

00:38:29   supporting cast is great if if buffy the [TS]

00:38:32   vampire slayer joss whedon said was sort [TS]

00:38:34   of like what if we did a TV show of [TS]

00:38:36   spider-man except you know it will will [TS]

00:38:39   do a gender flip and you know it will be [TS]

00:38:41   record ropes of super trips but he said [TS]

00:38:43   it was a huge spider man was a huge [TS]

00:38:45   inspiration when he did Buffy well [TS]

00:38:47   ultimate spider-man is kind of like [TS]

00:38:49   Buffy taking back the other way there's [TS]

00:38:51   a whole supporting cast around him it's [TS]

00:38:52   not just him as a loaner Mary Jane and [TS]

00:38:55   Gwen Stacy and Aunt May and and other [TS]

00:38:58   characters but you know jenna jameson [TS]

00:39:00   are much more supporting characters then [TS]

00:39:03   they were in so much of the original [TS]

00:39:05   spider-man so I love it it's great [TS]

00:39:08   that's run to there's more Lisa what [TS]

00:39:11   what's gonna start with round three [TS]

00:39:13   so i'm i'm i'm also picking a run so [TS]

00:39:17   i've i've talked about this series this [TS]

00:39:19   is really the series that is the closest [TS]

00:39:21   to my heart because the one that i read [TS]

00:39:22   through high school and identified with [TS]

00:39:25   really strongly and so my pic is the new [TS]

00:39:29   mutants run that went from 1983 okay [TS]

00:39:33   cause i wanna run on ya I want to warn [TS]

00:39:35   the I want to warn the listeners however [TS]

00:39:37   that the number and gets really flipping [TS]

00:39:40   wonky right around [TS]

00:39:42   number 40 so my recommendation is to [TS]

00:39:45   just read one through 40 binge on it [TS]

00:39:48   give yourself a little space and then [TS]

00:39:49   enjoy hopping and skipping from issue 46 [TS]

00:39:52   to issue 62 issue 71 and then jump ahead [TS]

00:39:56   to the last 44 issues that they have in [TS]

00:39:59   this run which are done by Rob life old [TS]

00:40:01   sorry just instinctive reaction because [TS]

00:40:05   i'm truly it's just it [TS]

00:40:08   it's a distinctive look and especially [TS]

00:40:10   if you go back and you're looking at how [TS]

00:40:12   things are done in the beginning and how [TS]

00:40:14   i'm the the the cloud and the bush that [TS]

00:40:17   that sandwich stuff looks and then you [TS]

00:40:20   go two pouches pouches and ponytails all [TS]

00:40:23   patches and 5000 but i highly recommend [TS]

00:40:27   running through issues 1 340 what I find [TS]

00:40:31   really exciting about this book is chris [TS]

00:40:33   claremont sat down and basically said [TS]

00:40:35   alright we have a bunch of x men who [TS]

00:40:36   have who have aged into adulthood [TS]

00:40:38   let's see what it's like to have a bunch [TS]

00:40:40   of teenagers for mutants in the nineteen [TS]

00:40:42   eighties instead the nineteen sixties [TS]

00:40:44   how is their world different because [TS]

00:40:46   they have a generation ahead of them [TS]

00:40:48   how do they deal with having these [TS]

00:40:49   footsteps to fill and how did how do you [TS]

00:40:52   grow up as a second-generation mutant [TS]

00:40:54   and I think the reason that that [TS]

00:40:56   resonates with me so strongly is as [TS]

00:40:58   somebody who's grown up in the cultural [TS]

00:40:59   shadows of the baby boomers it's kind of [TS]

00:41:02   like having the cultural conversation [TS]

00:41:04   that you see in partying in the media [TS]

00:41:07   when they talk about the baby boomer [TS]

00:41:08   generation x Millennials it's fun seeing [TS]

00:41:11   that theme reflected in amplified a bit [TS]

00:41:13   in the comics it's interesting watching [TS]

00:41:15   them try to develop mutants who can be [TS]

00:41:17   compelling with powers that are cool but [TS]

00:41:19   not duplicating the already existing [TS]

00:41:21   powers of other mutants and it's fun [TS]

00:41:25   watching that it's fun watching the user [TS]

00:41:27   identity has some of these guys go [TS]

00:41:29   deeper into their meant to be and other [TS]

00:41:30   people try on different identities and [TS]

00:41:31   discard them i love the twist the door [TS]

00:41:34   and my frost starts teaching and it's [TS]

00:41:37   just it's a good time [TS]

00:41:38   it's a lot of fun and I also feel like [TS]

00:41:42   it provides a really handy visual [TS]

00:41:43   history of the way comics were drawn [TS]

00:41:46   from about 93 2 1989 [TS]

00:41:49   so you know if you've got an afternoon [TS]

00:41:50   or to just flip on through and then [TS]

00:41:53   wonder why more of these care [TS]

00:41:55   haven't broken into the the big-league [TS]

00:41:57   sense well they're making a new mutants [TS]

00:41:59   movie so we'll see what how they do but [TS]

00:42:01   i had this on my list too and it's funny [TS]

00:42:02   least I wrote down issues 1 through 30 [TS]

00:42:05   something like in there is where I'm [TS]

00:42:07   like yeah then you can stop if you do [TS]

00:42:10   get Scott gets confusing then I had 1831 [TS]

00:42:13   just give me the building cabbage and [TS]

00:42:15   there you were fine i didn't even bother [TS]

00:42:17   putting it on my list is knew we were [TS]

00:42:19   gonna we're gonna take it so well yeah I [TS]

00:42:21   love that the whole concept of the New [TS]

00:42:22   Mutants yeah I wish you know what I want [TS]

00:42:24   more these guys make up to the big [TS]

00:42:26   leagues as it were I mean they're [TS]

00:42:27   powerful enough and they've been around [TS]

00:42:29   for 30 years you think at some point but [TS]

00:42:31   sunspot features fairly prominently in [TS]

00:42:34   the Avengers arc that led to the new [TS]

00:42:39   secret wars event he's actually in there [TS]

00:42:43   a lot as sort of a all again all [TS]

00:42:45   grown-up see because they're not they're [TS]

00:42:47   not kids anymore either [TS]

00:42:48   everybody ages out of the value of the [TS]

00:42:50   Nuyens but he was that he was in there [TS]

00:42:52   and I think I think that was in there to [TS]

00:42:54   there around [TS]

00:42:55   yeah they've because they've tried and [TS]

00:42:57   they've tried a couple times like with [TS]

00:42:58   making the new that the old New Mutants [TS]

00:43:01   they tried to make them the instructors [TS]

00:43:02   for the New Mutants when they reviewed [TS]

00:43:04   the series in the early Audis and on the [TS]

00:43:07   one hand i'm glad to see everybody grew [TS]

00:43:08   up and on the other hand I'm like you [TS]

00:43:10   know you're still you know Scott Summers [TS]

00:43:12   consider a few out and have Sam take [TS]

00:43:14   over it wouldn't it wouldn't hurt [TS]

00:43:15   nope but that's just my think he's like [TS]

00:43:19   I said this is my squad ok Monty what's [TS]

00:43:21   your what's your what's your next one [TS]

00:43:23   Monty well I have won from the last [TS]

00:43:26   couple years and one from the eighties [TS]

00:43:27   I'm gonna go back to the beginning for [TS]

00:43:29   this one [TS]

00:43:30   the comic-book tales to astonish has [TS]

00:43:32   been about a lot of different things [TS]

00:43:34   it was about the Hulk for a long time [TS]

00:43:37   usually teamed not teamed up at like [TS]

00:43:40   back-to-back as there be a Hulk story [TS]

00:43:42   and a submariner story or a whole story [TS]

00:43:44   in a giant man story and before that it [TS]

00:43:46   was ant-man and the wasp but I'm going [TS]

00:43:49   all the way back to the first let's say [TS]

00:43:51   couple years of it 1959 to 1961 that [TS]

00:43:55   whoa tales to astonish one through [TS]

00:43:58   twenty-four how this is pre fantastic [TS]

00:44:01   for stuff and every issue is about giant [TS]

00:44:04   ridiculous sci-fi monsters like just [TS]

00:44:07   looking at these covers you've got [TS]

00:44:09   the giant from outer space my max king [TS]

00:44:12   of the mummies he's also joined tight [TS]

00:44:15   and no monster that typewriter months [TS]

00:44:18   from the dweller in the Black Swamp [TS]

00:44:20   gorgonzola and here in a issue 13 is [TS]

00:44:25   group the monster from Planet X and this [TS]

00:44:29   is the same group we have now in [TS]

00:44:31   guardians of the galaxy movies although [TS]

00:44:33   here he talks mostly saying i am from [TS]

00:44:36   Planet X I will destroy you if you look [TS]

00:44:40   really carefully in the movie guardians [TS]

00:44:41   of the galaxy during the mugshot seen [TS]

00:44:45   you can see that groups origin planet is [TS]

00:44:47   X I'm thrilled that they kept this [TS]

00:44:51   because Groot is actually older than [TS]

00:44:54   anything else that they're currently [TS]

00:44:56   using is older than the Fantastic Four [TS]

00:44:58   is older than fin fang foom i guess just [TS]

00:45:01   just like Captain America right would be [TS]

00:45:03   holder in the well write him [TS]

00:45:05   sure you know sorry but then its crude [TS]

00:45:08   crude is number two there [TS]

00:45:09   I take it back fine I'll go back to [TS]

00:45:11   saying hilarious names a creature from [TS]

00:45:13   kroger gar ramen way to the supermarket [TS]

00:45:17   ka rog ARR okay not the supermarket got [TS]

00:45:22   a rogar every issue has like three or [TS]

00:45:26   four stories they usually end with a [TS]

00:45:29   really sub twilight zone twist they're [TS]

00:45:32   all super super fun they do bring up my [TS]

00:45:35   main complaint about Marvel unlimited [TS]

00:45:36   which is I really wish they had the ads [TS]

00:45:39   in these issues [TS]

00:45:40   yeah because I want somebody telling me [TS]

00:45:42   how to learn kung foo and selling me [TS]

00:45:44   live monkeys i have the x-men the x-men [TS]

00:45:48   DVD or or cd-rom or whatever it was that [TS]

00:45:51   had all the issues in PDF format and [TS]

00:45:53   they had all the ads in them and the ads [TS]

00:45:55   show great they're so grave that you [TS]

00:45:57   know those comments are just pdfs you [TS]

00:45:59   cannot rip the DVD and then download all [TS]

00:46:03   those onto your iPad yes don't really [TS]

00:46:05   need to anymore but you can [TS]

00:46:07   yes I've done that that's my pic tales [TS]

00:46:10   to astonish was through let's say 24 and [TS]

00:46:13   issue 13 is the one with Groot the [TS]

00:46:16   monitoring of group [TS]

00:46:17   from Planet X monster from Planet X he [TS]

00:46:20   stomps around and tries to take over [TS]

00:46:22   Earth but it turns out he's made of wood [TS]

00:46:24   is not that great an idea know how to [TS]

00:46:28   deal with wood Groot [TS]

00:46:30   come on things yeah Planet X get it [TS]

00:46:33   together okay chip your your your choice [TS]

00:46:36   one of the glorious things about Marvel [TS]

00:46:39   unlimited it happened with the departure [TS]

00:46:43   of the star wars license from dark horse [TS]

00:46:45   comics are we'll see what you picked and [TS]

00:46:48   yeah let's go hope I'm i am not going to [TS]

00:46:54   pick the entirety of the star wars [TS]

00:46:56   franchise good [TS]

00:46:57   only a monster would do that Jack's on [TS]

00:46:59   his mind [TS]

00:47:01   the other big comic that I was into that [TS]

00:47:05   got me back into comics was the Marvel [TS]

00:47:09   Star Wars run in the eighties back when [TS]

00:47:13   there was no such thing as an expanded [TS]

00:47:15   universe there was no such thing as [TS]

00:47:17   continuity and one of the one of the [TS]

00:47:21   things that you ought to use marvel [TS]

00:47:23   unlimited for because it's cheaper than [TS]

00:47:25   buying these individual issues on [TS]

00:47:27   comixology is the runs of curiosities [TS]

00:47:30   not that are not necessarily worth [TS]

00:47:32   spending a lot of money on the [TS]

00:47:34   individual issues for but you should [TS]

00:47:36   just take a look at that so my pic is [TS]

00:47:38   the run of Star Wars comics that takes [TS]

00:47:41   place after Return of the Jedi issues 81 [TS]

00:47:45   2107 just for the sheer weirdness factor [TS]

00:47:49   of Marvel sitting there going okay what [TS]

00:47:52   do we do now there's no Lucas storey [TS]

00:47:54   group there's nothing so they just try [TS]

00:47:56   to figure out what they're going to do [TS]

00:47:58   with uh with a galaxy where the [TS]

00:48:03   Emperor's just dead and there are [TS]

00:48:04   remnants of the Imperials going at each [TS]

00:48:06   other and what they they do a couple of [TS]

00:48:09   sort of interesting things is they bring [TS]

00:48:12   in outside aliens [TS]

00:48:15   this is well before the Yuuzhan Vong in [TS]

00:48:17   the Expanded Universe but they bring in [TS]

00:48:20   and out they bring in a couple of [TS]

00:48:21   external threats they also bring in an [TS]

00:48:24   artist named Cynthia Martin [TS]

00:48:26   who is doing at this point art that you [TS]

00:48:30   cannot see in any other Marvel comic [TS]

00:48:32   anywhere very stylized very manga [TS]

00:48:35   influence that's almost like a nut nagel [TS]

00:48:38   Miguel painting kinda live final know [TS]

00:48:40   how to pronounce these things navel in [TS]

00:48:42   any way her art is beautiful it is it is [TS]

00:48:45   just it i have never seen Star Wars look [TS]

00:48:49   like that before or sins so vaguely I'm [TS]

00:48:54   saying issues 81 threw 107 of Star Wars [TS]

00:48:56   but specifically the later into the run [TS]

00:49:00   when they're about to wind it up they [TS]

00:49:02   know that they're going to be canceling [TS]

00:49:04   it and they just do whatever they want [TS]

00:49:06   the art looks great and you've got alien [TS]

00:49:08   you've gots eltron aliens name tomorrow [TS]

00:49:11   and Bob and Rahul and it's just funny [TS]

00:49:15   you say that that whole Star Wars run [TS]

00:49:19   prior to the new like 2013 Marvel [TS]

00:49:22   published comics it every single one of [TS]

00:49:26   those issues is on unlimited it's it is [TS]

00:49:29   it is a very very deep rabbit hole with [TS]

00:49:32   many branches that you can that you can [TS]

00:49:34   follow along and space right hole [TS]

00:49:37   yeah without what I I wouldn't say that [TS]

00:49:39   it's something that I could justifies a [TS]

00:49:41   pic on its own but similar on a similar [TS]

00:49:45   note of continuing things the very last [TS]

00:49:47   run of Star Wars legacy comics they did [TS]

00:49:50   co-written by gabriel Hardman karina [TS]

00:49:52   bitch go who have an image book called [TS]

00:49:54   the invisible republic right now are set [TS]

00:49:57   like a hundred and forty years after [TS]

00:49:59   Return of the Jedi and and are really [TS]

00:50:02   good fun [TS]

00:50:03   Star Wars comics I i could not echo your [TS]

00:50:05   sentiments any better and if you read [TS]

00:50:08   issue one you can see Darth Vader uh [TS]

00:50:09   levitate a cup of coffee because that's [TS]

00:50:12   the thing he doesn't think it's weird [TS]

00:50:14   noise that's what's your choice i have a [TS]

00:50:18   creator centric one that that also bends [TS]

00:50:22   the rules of time and space but in a way [TS]

00:50:24   that no way in a way that won't be so [TS]

00:50:25   all-encompassing is as crossovers and [TS]

00:50:28   everything [TS]

00:50:29   one of the things that I run into that I [TS]

00:50:31   think always run into is oh god I love [TS]

00:50:34   the work of creator blank [TS]

00:50:36   and oh yeah I've heard it's great [TS]

00:50:37   however this is great [TS]

00:50:39   one of them in particular who was taken [TS]

00:50:41   from us far too early an age is mark [TS]

00:50:43   gruenwald and he he had this magnificent [TS]

00:50:47   run on Captain America that included [TS]

00:50:50   something that that some people would [TS]

00:50:51   make fun of and something that i have [TS]

00:50:54   read and don't find nearly as laugh [TS]

00:50:56   inducing or mock worthy as other people [TS]

00:50:59   do and that is the infamous cap wolf run [TS]

00:51:03   where Captain America is turned into a [TS]

00:51:05   werewolf and and i use it as an example [TS]

00:51:07   in in my pic being the Marvel work of [TS]

00:51:11   mark gruenwald because their stuff like [TS]

00:51:13   that that is something that you see in [TS]

00:51:15   listicles as a joke all the time their [TS]

00:51:18   stuff like his run on squadron supreme [TS]

00:51:20   in the mid-eighties that is really great [TS]

00:51:21   and in fact bits and pieces of it i [TS]

00:51:23   think our or somehow making it into this [TS]

00:51:25   season of agents of shield mark [TS]

00:51:27   gruenwald was the creator editor at [TS]

00:51:30   Marvel who was the living encyclopedia [TS]

00:51:33   of all things more when he had all of [TS]

00:51:35   the issue numbers in the back of his [TS]

00:51:37   head could just rattle them off to you [TS]

00:51:40   easy just without any effort you know [TS]

00:51:43   I'm sad that the the new universe stuff [TS]

00:51:45   that he wrote the various other people [TS]

00:51:46   wrote aren't on Marvel unlimited because [TS]

00:51:48   some of those books really really really [TS]

00:51:50   good but what there is a partner in [TS]

00:51:53   walls work which is all in the main [TS]

00:51:55   marvel universe is all over limited 111 [TS]

00:51:59   comic that was there was a weird [TS]

00:52:01   formative influence on me that i got in [TS]

00:52:03   this year's wish book cardboard box of a [TS]

00:52:05   bunch of Marvel Comics was Captain [TS]

00:52:07   America 395 written by Grunwald with [TS]

00:52:10   captain america and thor on the cover [TS]

00:52:12   covered in some sort of viscous material [TS]

00:52:17   and the caption on the on the cover says [TS]

00:52:20   the house that dripped ellipses dough [TS]

00:52:23   interrobang and concepts that stupid and [TS]

00:52:29   crazy on on on the cover of a comic mark [TS]

00:52:31   gruenwald could make absolutely [TS]

00:52:34   fascinating reading in the in the pages [TS]

00:52:36   in between the two covers where what you [TS]

00:52:38   get on that cover is this looks [TS]

00:52:39   ridiculous and then on the inside you [TS]

00:52:42   you find [TS]

00:52:44   the Red Skull hooking up a hot tub with [TS]

00:52:46   Madame Hydra and just all kinds of [TS]

00:52:49   bizarre super comic booky things so so i [TS]

00:52:53   would say the the work of mark gruenwald [TS]

00:52:56   as as an example of a creator that [TS]

00:52:59   people talk about people know and honor [TS]

00:53:02   and respect but you you can do one of [TS]

00:53:05   those really crazy deep dives on all [TS]

00:53:07   kinds of stuff that that people don't [TS]

00:53:08   write listicles about you know what was [TS]

00:53:10   the best time that Captain America died [TS]

00:53:12   sorry spoiler alert that that kind of [TS]

00:53:16   thing a really wonderful really [TS]

00:53:18   wonderful human being much much beloved [TS]

00:53:20   much missed by a lot of people who knew [TS]

00:53:22   him myself not included I just knew him [TS]

00:53:23   by his work well once more moisture is [TS]

00:53:26   has a condo in my head and I think I and [TS]

00:53:30   I think we're we're time-sharing here [TS]

00:53:32   because he sniped me again I this but i [TS]

00:53:37   will call out the my pick would have [TS]

00:53:39   been captain america issues 332 350 [TS]

00:53:42   which was the captain america no more [TS]

00:53:45   storyline where he where the government [TS]

00:53:48   tries to rein steve rogers in and Steve [TS]

00:53:51   quits day and almost all right ish a [TS]

00:53:55   good old boy from the south [TS]

00:53:57   uh takes over as captain america Steve [TS]

00:54:01   Rogers takes and takes on a new identity [TS]

00:54:04   as the captain so he can keep on doing [TS]

00:54:06   his thing and hilarity ensues and [TS]

00:54:09   culminates in the rebirth after a lot of [TS]

00:54:11   years of the red skull so and that that [TS]

00:54:14   I think is mark gruenwald at his best if [TS]

00:54:17   you omit the squadron supreme all right [TS]

00:54:20   i'm gonna go in i'm gonna get on the [TS]

00:54:22   Star Wars train to chip cover train of [TS]

00:54:24   some sort soon space training to start [TS]

00:54:26   rain i am going to recommend from the [TS]

00:54:30   you know Marvel and Disney and Lucasfilm [TS]

00:54:34   all part of the same big happy family [TS]

00:54:36   the return of Star Wars comics to marvel [TS]

00:54:38   i'm going to recommend Karen Gillan's [TS]

00:54:42   Darth Vader series which I like a lot [TS]

00:54:46   and has in its the most evil droids you [TS]

00:54:52   will ever ever murdered roid triple zero [TS]

00:54:57   oh it's uh and and I i was thinking like [TS]

00:54:59   a Darth Vader comic I don't know how [TS]

00:55:01   they're going to do that but the it's [TS]

00:55:02   it's set between star wars empire [TS]

00:55:03   strikes back where Darth Vader is [TS]

00:55:05   actually kind of in trouble because he [TS]

00:55:07   let the Death Star get blown up and so [TS]

00:55:09   the Emperor he's come on the outside the [TS]

00:55:11   Emperor said some on some kind of crappy [TS]

00:55:12   missions and he needs to prove himself [TS]

00:55:14   again and he runs into this bounty [TS]

00:55:16   hunter and her to murder droids and he [TS]

00:55:20   sends around submissions and it's it is [TS]

00:55:23   really good so if you've ever thought [TS]

00:55:26   like a Star Wars comic I don't know [TS]

00:55:28   about that and there was obviously the [TS]

00:55:30   big publicity about the other the the [TS]

00:55:33   main course Star Wars comic but give the [TS]

00:55:35   darth vader ongoing series look it's [TS]

00:55:38   from number one I it's a lot of fun and [TS]

00:55:41   Yammer droids they're amazing [TS]

00:55:43   it only just concluded so you're only a [TS]

00:55:46   few months behind on it and it is it is [TS]

00:55:49   it is a very very solid two-year Run on [TS]

00:55:53   on the character and I it is it is one [TS]

00:55:57   of those comics in the the whole Star [TS]

00:56:00   Wars line is so good but it's the one [TS]

00:56:01   that I tell people if you read this and [TS]

00:56:04   don't like it I don't know that you're [TS]

00:56:05   going to like any of Marvel's new Star [TS]

00:56:06   Wars comics because you don't like good [TS]

00:56:08   comics it's so good it's so so good so 1 [TS]

00:56:13   225 is the total run of the storyline [TS]

00:56:15   marvel unlimited trailing behind a [TS]

00:56:17   little bit as up to 19 now but there's a [TS]

00:56:19   new one every month that gets added so [TS]

00:56:21   you won't be that far behind and if [TS]

00:56:23   you're really into it you can go buy [TS]

00:56:24   those digital issues or or or physical [TS]

00:56:28   issues somewhere else if you want to the [TS]

00:56:30   Marvel would love for you to get so [TS]

00:56:31   hooked on the comic using marvel [TS]

00:56:33   unlimited that you have to go buy copies [TS]

00:56:37   and the as they're released [TS]

00:56:38   that's there that's part of the game [TS]

00:56:40   let's do another round Lisa oh gosh um [TS]

00:56:44   I'm torn because i have i have four more [TS]

00:56:47   pics on my list i really hope you're not [TS]

00:56:49   doing for more round so this is fucking [TS]

00:56:51   hot [TS]

00:56:51   thank you um so I think the one I'm [TS]

00:56:55   going to actually pick is a fairly [TS]

00:56:58   recent series secret avengers that has [TS]

00:57:02   been running since 2014 to the present [TS]

00:57:06   and for those of you who are like me and [TS]

00:57:07   like dead tree media they've also got a [TS]

00:57:09   couple trades out [TS]

00:57:10   and the whole point behind secret [TS]

00:57:13   avengers is a group of people who do the [TS]

00:57:15   work that needs to be done in the dark [TS]

00:57:17   and nick fury and Agent Coulson are the [TS]

00:57:21   ones who curl them and it's got Hawkeye [TS]

00:57:24   Black Widow Jessica drew and kind of [TS]

00:57:28   like you know you think I wouldn't blank [TS]

00:57:29   on the guy who is basically a giant [TS]

00:57:31   round head and tail arms and legs but [TS]

00:57:33   our dog Charlie Brown MODOK thankyou [TS]

00:57:36   thankyou was blanketed a very [TS]

00:57:38   embarrassing yes yes they keep pulling a [TS]

00:57:40   world domination for MODOK it's very sad [TS]

00:57:42   he'll never trust Lucy but secret [TS]

00:57:45   avengers what I like about it is it's um [TS]

00:57:48   shows a bunch of people who are [TS]

00:57:51   pragmatic but they don't have the kind [TS]

00:57:53   of focused nastiness that tends to [TS]

00:57:57   permit the ultimate's universe which was [TS]

00:58:00   one of the things i found a feeling [TS]

00:58:01   about the ultimate's universe as much [TS]

00:58:02   more pragmatic and a lot of ways and [TS]

00:58:04   very realpolitik about this is what we [TS]

00:58:06   doing this why we do it but on the other [TS]

00:58:08   hand it seems like a lot of the [TS]

00:58:08   characters are nasty because they could [TS]

00:58:10   be or because they're like well screw [TS]

00:58:12   you I'm i have a bow and arrow what are [TS]

00:58:13   you gonna do about it [TS]

00:58:14   whereas in this one the nastiness is [TS]

00:58:17   down considerably the pragmatism is up [TS]

00:58:19   Coulson gets flushed out a lot and I [TS]

00:58:22   also one of the reasons I'm so taken [TS]

00:58:24   with this series i really enjoy how he's [TS]

00:58:26   been just kind of folded into the [TS]

00:58:27   marvelous folded back into the Marvel [TS]

00:58:29   Universe like that he's a character in a [TS]

00:58:31   really weird interesting history now [TS]

00:58:33   when you think about it from you know [TS]

00:58:35   his introduction in the MCU to his cross [TS]

00:58:37   over to this medium to the way that that [TS]

00:58:39   has continuity is taking off in a [TS]

00:58:40   completely different direction that [TS]

00:58:41   what's going on TV anyway it's um heck a [TS]

00:58:45   lot of fun to read and I like the RTR is [TS]

00:58:49   very pretty very modern and of course [TS]

00:58:51   there's a dead polishes everything [TS]

00:58:52   everything comes together they're [TS]

00:58:54   currently 15 issues right now it's so [TS]

00:58:56   it's again it's a it's a night's work to [TS]

00:58:58   sit down and read them or rather a [TS]

00:59:00   tonight's entertainment generate them [TS]

00:59:01   and you know everybody else's is busy [TS]

00:59:04   same please read this decade's worth of [TS]

00:59:05   comics I'm saying please read really [TS]

00:59:07   really you're in change [TS]

00:59:09   it's it's it's entertaining it's fun and [TS]

00:59:11   I think it'll whet your appetite for you [TS]

00:59:13   know other other books that have [TS]

00:59:15   different aspects of shield I'm [TS]

00:59:17   perennially fascinated by all the diff [TS]

00:59:18   all of the different permutations [TS]

00:59:19   Shields has both public and not [TS]

00:59:22   like and this sort of fields into the [TS]

00:59:24   contention that every agents need the [TS]

00:59:26   black ops team and I'll and I like this [TS]

00:59:27   one that gets silly and ridiculous [TS]

00:59:30   toward the end of that run I i love that [TS]

00:59:32   one [TS]

00:59:32   Monty i was going to pick something [TS]

00:59:35   respectable but i'm not going well i [TS]

00:59:38   started a little so if anyone wants to [TS]

00:59:41   jump on the matt fraction run on Hawkeye [TS]

00:59:43   you are free to do so i'm going to [TS]

00:59:45   suggest the fun thing about Marvel [TS]

00:59:47   unlimited is that they haven't put any [TS]

00:59:50   sort of quality control things that they [TS]

00:59:52   might be embarrassed about running no oh [TS]

00:59:54   no I think you might have got water by [TS]

00:59:56   secret terrible thing that's tricky [TS]

00:59:59   because i have a [TS]

00:59:59   because i have a [TS]

01:00:00   list of five terrible things i'm picking [TS]

01:00:01   from right now but what I'm going to go [TS]

01:00:05   with God is the Mephisto limited series [TS]

01:00:09   haha wow why worry what I want to [TS]

01:00:15   because i think what's great about [TS]

01:00:17   Marvel unlimited like say is you can go [TS]

01:00:20   get the weird little things they did [TS]

01:00:22   they also have the Rocket Raccoon [TS]

01:00:23   limited series which is Rockets origin [TS]

01:00:26   story and it is crazy crazy not that [TS]

01:00:29   makes no sense from a circus world you [TS]

01:00:32   could go find parts it's true what is [TS]

01:00:38   the count what's the kids the one from [TS]

01:00:39   1985 the duration t get up for forget [TS]

01:00:42   mr. my new pic Rocket Raccoon the market [TS]

01:00:45   regulation 1985 1240 my car so is it [TS]

01:00:49   there sometimes excited body needs to [TS]

01:00:51   that does the doors open like five [TS]

01:00:53   thousand clowns pour out and they're [TS]

01:00:54   also a different district is it isn't [TS]

01:00:56   that isn't that that is that much a [TS]

01:00:58   straight line between the metaphor the [TS]

01:00:59   me more than that it's very hard to [TS]

01:01:04   explain but everybody's looking for this [TS]

01:01:07   book and there's a whole bunch of [TS]

01:01:10   mutated animals but they don't know [TS]

01:01:11   their mutated animals and there's killer [TS]

01:01:13   clown bots and it's crazy nuts the cover [TS]

01:01:17   the fourth issues rocket raccoon with a [TS]

01:01:19   sword in his left hand and a decapitated [TS]

01:01:22   clown head is right writing a robot [TS]

01:01:24   horse [TS]

01:01:25   yeah it is i feel like we need to make [TS]

01:01:28   this a mean 22 symbol to signify the end [TS]

01:01:31   of this year like we just have to pick [TS]

01:01:33   it we can do it i feel so I feel very [TS]

01:01:36   strongly in our powers let's do it i'm [TS]

01:01:38   going to draw Rocket Raccoon as the [TS]

01:01:40   summation of the various limited series [TS]

01:01:42   like you can also find longshot 124 [TS]

01:01:45   which by the way was our atoms first [TS]

01:01:47   work well I mean just to go back to [TS]

01:01:49   rocket raccoon I mean that miniseries it [TS]

01:01:52   was is written by Bill Matlow with mike [TS]

01:01:55   mignola doing the pencils i mean it's [TS]

01:01:58   not like a random people it's serious [TS]

01:02:02   creators making the rec room is it [TS]

01:02:05   series creators making something [TS]

01:02:07   completely nonsensical that is now a [TS]

01:02:10   cornerstone of the Marvel Empire [TS]

01:02:13   yeah and it's super fun so my official [TS]

01:02:16   pic is Rocket Raccoon ok also go read my [TS]

01:02:19   fist oh but this was fun the devil gets [TS]

01:02:21   the fights for the fantastic 4 X Factor [TS]

01:02:24   x-men and The Avengers inhale of course [TS]

01:02:27   all canon alright a chip what do you [TS]

01:02:30   have [TS]

01:02:30   I've got so much time just gonna have to [TS]

01:02:32   barrel through when we bring out their [TS]

01:02:34   dead but i'm going to pick possibly the [TS]

01:02:37   best single comic I ever published by [TS]

01:02:41   Marvel now that's too much but it's the [TS]

01:02:44   building has a rocket raccoon America is [TS]

01:02:46   the best fantastic for comic ever [TS]

01:02:48   published by Marvel and that is [TS]

01:02:50   fantastic for 60 new series not all [TS]

01:02:53   written by Mark Waid and drawn by [TS]

01:02:54   Michael gringo it is the first issue of [TS]

01:02:57   mark waid's run and I cannot tell you [TS]

01:03:02   that anybody else before or since has [TS]

01:03:05   nailed the Fantastic Four and who they [TS]

01:03:08   are and ought to be as comic book [TS]

01:03:10   characters this comic book should have [TS]

01:03:13   been the pages should have been taken [TS]

01:03:16   out and they should have been stapled [TS]

01:03:19   onto the chest of the people responsible [TS]

01:03:20   for all three of the fantastic four [TS]

01:03:23   movies that have been that have been [TS]

01:03:26   released on the big screens waits a [TS]

01:03:30   fantastic comic writer I think he's made [TS]

01:03:33   best known for for his run on the flash [TS]

01:03:37   in the nineties but I i cant its 22 22 [TS]

01:03:43   pages if I describe it [TS]

01:03:45   I'm think I'm going to be giving away [TS]

01:03:46   too much about it but if you want to see [TS]

01:03:48   an absolutely human in a portrayal of [TS]

01:03:52   mr. fantastic and why a guy would name [TS]

01:03:56   himself mr. fantastic if you want to see [TS]

01:04:00   Reed and Sue and Johnny and Ben and Reed [TS]

01:04:05   and Sue's kids as a family for without [TS]

01:04:08   with all the pros and cons and the thing [TS]

01:04:12   that the thing about this is it [TS]

01:04:13   establishes the Fantastic Four not as [TS]

01:04:15   superheroes but as explorers into the [TS]

01:04:19   unknown and it just dives into that and [TS]

01:04:22   the comics that succeeded issues 6370 [TS]

01:04:26   and then they went through [TS]

01:04:26   the number change fit 500 25 24 it's a [TS]

01:04:31   spectacular run of fantastic four [TS]

01:04:33   stories but fantastic 460 is a beautiful [TS]

01:04:37   moving inspiring story about the first [TS]

01:04:41   family of Marvel Comics that's great [TS]

01:04:43   i'll check that out I always looking for [TS]

01:04:45   new Fantastic Four runs when they've got [TS]

01:04:46   600 issues it's kinda hard to choose [TS]

01:04:48   so i will check that out that's great [TS]

01:04:50   Mike Weir ago passed away way too soon [TS]

01:04:54   he was a lie i'm from durham north [TS]

01:04:56   carolina so was he [TS]

01:04:58   I saw him every once in awhile at the [TS]

01:05:00   occasional North Carolina comic [TS]

01:05:02   convention he has an outsized influence [TS]

01:05:06   on the comics industry and you're [TS]

01:05:09   hard-pressed to find any comics artist [TS]

01:05:11   these days who doesn't point to him as [TS]

01:05:13   both a good guy and a really really [TS]

01:05:15   spectacular artists all right is what's [TS]

01:05:20   your last pic I've broken so many rules [TS]

01:05:23   I've bent the rules of space-time but [TS]

01:05:26   they're there is nothing in Marvel [TS]

01:05:28   Comics history that is bent the Marvel [TS]

01:05:31   Universe more than a series that they [TS]

01:05:34   they don't make anymore they haven't [TS]

01:05:35   made a long time a little series called [TS]

01:05:38   what if yes haha entire catalog of [TS]

01:05:43   Marvel what if is on Marvel unlimited [TS]

01:05:44   and I can't just pick one run because [TS]

01:05:47   every issue is a one-off one shot [TS]

01:05:49   yeah it is fascinating nihilistic [TS]

01:05:51   terribly depressing extremely uplifting [TS]

01:05:55   in some cases you know what is usually [TS]

01:05:57   everyone dies [TS]

01:05:58   yes what if spider-man's clone had lived [TS]

01:06:00   you know the one from the seventies not [TS]

01:06:03   the one from the nineties what if Jane [TS]

01:06:05   Foster held the power of Thor huh [TS]

01:06:08   interesting what if they're at the the [TS]

01:06:10   thing I find fascinating is that the [TS]

01:06:12   water if series has become something of [TS]

01:06:15   a springboard for the way that Marvel is [TS]

01:06:17   choosing to bend their own rules break [TS]

01:06:19   their own rules and do interesting [TS]

01:06:20   things and i would not forgive myself if [TS]

01:06:23   I did not choose Marvel what if I [TS]

01:06:25   absolutely loved what if any pic the one [TS]

01:06:29   of the Avengers have become pawns of [TS]

01:06:30   quarterback which is this very strange [TS]

01:06:32   very specific bit of continuity and yet [TS]

01:06:36   it's and that's a mark gruenwald [TS]

01:06:37   actually story [TS]

01:06:38   yeah it is mine [TS]

01:06:40   glowing because it not spoiler alert for [TS]

01:06:42   whatever issue number 32 but it ends [TS]

01:06:45   with not just everybody dying but the [TS]

01:06:46   universe being completely destroyed and [TS]

01:06:49   then there's a little bit of story after [TS]

01:06:50   that it's kind of amazing the kids an [TS]

01:06:53   amazing weird story so I love what if [TS]

01:06:56   someone yeah what if what if Rick Jones [TS]

01:06:58   has become the hulk what if dr. strange [TS]

01:07:01   became a disciple of Dormammu what if [TS]

01:07:04   the Avengers that fought evil in the [TS]

01:07:05   nineteen fifties the the very first one [TS]

01:07:08   though [TS]

01:07:09   what if spider-man had joined the [TS]

01:07:10   Fantastic Four to form the fantastic [TS]

01:07:12   five [TS]

01:07:13   there's also a pretty good what a marvel [TS]

01:07:15   superheroes module for the tsr game [TS]

01:07:18   called gates of what if i remember [TS]

01:07:20   really enjoying playing through ah what [TS]

01:07:22   if so I'm gonna I'm gonna wrap it up and [TS]

01:07:24   and i'm going to so Monty mentioned the [TS]

01:07:28   the fraction Hawkeye series which I felt [TS]

01:07:32   like it could have been my first pick [TS]

01:07:34   we talked about it a lot and and did an [TS]

01:07:37   issue did an episode about it does he [TS]

01:07:39   can make just a quick recommendation [TS]

01:07:40   because if you are going to load up the [TS]

01:07:42   Hawkeye Matt Fraction run load all of [TS]

01:07:45   the covers and then scroll through and [TS]

01:07:47   marvel at how definitely they change out [TS]

01:07:50   the color schemes from issue number one [TS]

01:07:52   all the way up to issue number 22 it is [TS]

01:07:55   i didn't realize how craft again this is [TS]

01:07:59   limitation of this is the limitation of [TS]

01:08:00   being on trade paperbacks is I didn't [TS]

01:08:02   realize how carefully and how craftily [TS]

01:08:04   it was done until like I could until I [TS]

01:08:07   can follow the visual story from issue 1 [TS]

01:08:09   all the way through the issue 22 and [TS]

01:08:11   like just scroll back and forth and [TS]

01:08:12   appreciate that for a bit before you [TS]

01:08:15   even get to the rest of it i just wanted [TS]

01:08:16   I just want to get that you can't yeah [TS]

01:08:17   and if you if you haven't read for God's [TS]

01:08:19   sake go and do that but I'm going to do [TS]

01:08:21   the ultimate the alternate pic here [TS]

01:08:23   which is matt fraction and and some of [TS]

01:08:27   his collaborators on Hawkeye worked with [TS]

01:08:29   that Brubaker and did a run of immortal [TS]

01:08:32   iron fist from 2006 issues 1 through 16 [TS]

01:08:35   that is a really fun story and I never [TS]

01:08:39   really cared at all about iron fist but [TS]

01:08:41   there's a lot of very interesting things [TS]

01:08:43   in it and luke cage and jessica jones [TS]

01:08:44   make some appearances and it's got a [TS]

01:08:46   really interesting story there's a [TS]

01:08:48   dragon [TS]

01:08:49   it's fun and so if you if you read [TS]

01:08:52   Hawkeye cuz you should [TS]

01:08:53   is everybody should read that and you're [TS]

01:08:54   like where do I go next maybe try [TS]

01:08:56   immortal iron fist 12 16 from 2006 it [TS]

01:09:00   rehabilitates a lot of aspects of the [TS]

01:09:02   character that have been not great for [TS]

01:09:04   decades yeah exactly right now and [TS]

01:09:06   Friday moment to have like really and [TS]

01:09:09   then i read i was like oh actually yeah [TS]

01:09:10   it's this like could good job everybody [TS]

01:09:13   this really good yeah yeah so i [TS]

01:09:16   recommend a moral iron fist a lot [TS]

01:09:19   all right it is time now for us to just [TS]

01:09:21   list off all the many many things that [TS]

01:09:23   we wish we could have talked about but [TS]

01:09:25   ran out of time to talk about [TS]

01:09:27   bring out your dead Lisa what do you [TS]

01:09:28   have left on your list that you didn't [TS]

01:09:30   get to recommend ok the two quick its [TS]

01:09:32   i'm going to do number one is aj michael [TS]

01:09:35   Straczynski series from 2007-2008 called [TS]

01:09:38   the twelve which use is going back to [TS]

01:09:41   the Troops yes he's going back to the [TS]

01:09:43   troops of the Golden Age it feels like a [TS]

01:09:46   more JK it I the reason I i began [TS]

01:09:49   surfing through it was I looked at the [TS]

01:09:50   covers like this has kind of a watchman [TS]

01:09:53   feel to it in the sense that somebody [TS]

01:09:54   who's taking the troops of comics the [TS]

01:09:56   history of comics and playing with a [TS]

01:09:58   little bit and I'm a sucker for JMS [TS]

01:10:00   world-building I will complain until [TS]

01:10:03   they I will complain until my last [TS]

01:10:05   breath about the way why rising stars [TS]

01:10:07   ended like you I could do a podcast on [TS]

01:10:09   that but i always get sucked into how [TS]

01:10:12   definitely he builds worlds and how [TS]

01:10:14   quickly he builds out three-dimensional [TS]

01:10:16   characters and establishes relationships [TS]

01:10:18   between characters just by dialogue and [TS]

01:10:20   so for somebody who really likes GMS [TS]

01:10:22   this is a fun read and I really enjoy [TS]

01:10:25   the art and I enjoy where it's going and [TS]

01:10:28   the covers are our separate our software [TS]

01:10:30   again you just there's a lot of pleasure [TS]

01:10:32   to be had and scrolling through and [TS]

01:10:33   taking a look at the stories of the [TS]

01:10:34   covers telling the other series i was [TS]

01:10:38   going to recommend a rather serious run [TS]

01:10:40   i really loved Peter David's work on X [TS]

01:10:43   Factor and I was going to urge everybody [TS]

01:10:45   to read X Factor probably through i want [TS]

01:10:49   to say about issue number 40 maybe issue [TS]

01:10:54   42 issue 39 have was like one of those [TS]

01:10:57   horrifying things i've ever read my life [TS]

01:11:00   if you are a new parent never read this [TS]

01:11:03   issue but Peter David did such a great [TS]

01:11:05   job with characters who are normally big [TS]

01:11:07   who are normally just you know throw [TS]

01:11:08   into the background of scenes when [TS]

01:11:09   sounds like we need a lot of x-men to [TS]

01:11:11   make it look like they're fighting and [TS]

01:11:13   it focuses on Jamie madrix launching a [TS]

01:11:15   product of a private investigation [TS]

01:11:17   service [TS]

01:11:18   he's got a Monet Sinclair no moneys in [TS]

01:11:20   LA as his as his second-in-command he's [TS]

01:11:24   got siren who is the daughter banshee [TS]

01:11:26   there's rain Sinclair from the new x-men [TS]

01:11:29   and they basically like go around [TS]

01:11:33   solving solving crimes for people and [TS]

01:11:35   complicating this is layla miller who [TS]

01:11:37   knows things and magics as clones all [TS]

01:11:41   over the country that he sent out to go [TS]

01:11:43   get education and information [TS]

01:11:44   experiences so he could become more real [TS]

01:11:46   more well-rounded person and hunting [TS]

01:11:49   down reabsorbing these clothes take some [TS]

01:11:51   time to so anyway it's it's it's funny [TS]

01:11:54   it's thoughtful it's a little bit dark [TS]

01:11:57   and one of the things I really love [TS]

01:12:00   about it is they've got Glenn fate they [TS]

01:12:02   got time Glenn favorite doing a bunch of [TS]

01:12:04   the covers as well and I love his covers [TS]

01:12:07   so it's just been a real pleasure to go [TS]

01:12:09   back [TS]

01:12:09   visit that series visit a bunch of [TS]

01:12:11   covers and oh it looks so those are the [TS]

01:12:14   two that that I would enjoy and again [TS]

01:12:16   not a huge time commitment is kind of [TS]

01:12:17   fun but for the love of God stop [TS]

01:12:19   somewhere in the forties like X Factor [TS]

01:12:21   ran for like 262 issues but after the [TS]

01:12:25   first few years just like oh really [TS]

01:12:27   really this is what's going on [TS]

01:12:28   so you know right stop in the forties in [TS]

01:12:31   your top of the forties that's it [TS]

01:12:33   I Monty what did you not pick that you'd [TS]

01:12:36   like to mention i have four things [TS]

01:12:39   really quick i normally find the Hulk [TS]

01:12:41   boring because I just want him to be [TS]

01:12:42   punching things more often so go [TS]

01:12:45   straight to the incredible hulk number [TS]

01:12:46   92 which is where planet hulk begins the [TS]

01:12:49   Hulk has been shoved off the earth [TS]

01:12:51   because everybody sick of dealing with [TS]

01:12:52   him he lands another planet and punches [TS]

01:12:55   everybody through the issue 105 then [TS]

01:12:58   giant-sized alt number one then world [TS]

01:13:00   war hulk which is when he comes back to [TS]

01:13:02   earth and he's very very angry at [TS]

01:13:05   everybody who threw him off onto another [TS]

01:13:07   planet [TS]

01:13:08   that's an incredible hulk number 92 [TS]

01:13:10   through 15 and then world war hulk and [TS]

01:13:12   it's so much Hulk punching it is the [TS]

01:13:15   best Hawking I've ever seen [TS]

01:13:18   I own the planet whole card cover and I [TS]

01:13:21   love it's a great it's a great story [TS]

01:13:23   because he is literally like what if the [TS]

01:13:24   Hulk went to an alien planet and had to [TS]

01:13:27   survive there and it's like yeah you [TS]

01:13:29   know what he's gonna do we're gonna [TS]

01:13:31   punch a lot of people that's what's [TS]

01:13:32   gonna happen let's make the Hulk a [TS]

01:13:33   gladiator [TS]

01:13:34   well okay the the implications of it [TS]

01:13:37   have ever berated through marvel comics [TS]

01:13:39   ever since and it was a way to take him [TS]

01:13:41   off the board for civil war [TS]

01:13:42   yeah the limited series spider-man and [TS]

01:13:46   the x-men that's a six-issue limited [TS]

01:13:48   series written by elliott kalyan of the [TS]

01:13:51   flophouse is super funny that was on my [TS]

01:13:53   list to it has been and we may have seen [TS]

01:13:55   floating around the internet where he [TS]

01:13:57   says something to the effect of you have [TS]

01:14:00   this power you could be carrying people [TS]

01:14:02   of cancer and a dinosaur says I don't [TS]

01:14:04   want to cure people of cancer i want to [TS]

01:14:06   turn people into dinosaurs which is such [TS]

01:14:09   a spiffy way to describe a villains [TS]

01:14:12   mindset tutor people [TS]

01:14:14   yes because of that run I now here [TS]

01:14:17   Elliot kalyn's voice in my head when I [TS]

01:14:18   read Peter Parker is spider-man that's [TS]

01:14:21   not that is the voice of Peter Parker to [TS]

01:14:22   be I think sergeant fury and his Howling [TS]

01:14:27   Commandos a super-fun you starts back in [TS]

01:14:30   1963 when start appearing sergeant Nick [TS]

01:14:33   period six-foot-two of seal muscled iron [TS]

01:14:35   nerve fighting man and it's just a good [TS]

01:14:39   jack kirby is fun and finally I think a [TS]

01:14:42   very important limited series for what [TS]

01:14:46   characters would end up controlling the [TS]

01:14:49   Marvel Universe 1984 Kitty Pryde and [TS]

01:14:52   Wolverine yes I think that's wasn't [TS]

01:14:57   serious [TS]

01:14:57   that's where they go to Japan you see [TS]

01:15:00   Kitty Pryde be a little tougher you see [TS]

01:15:02   wolverine start to get a sensitive side [TS]

01:15:04   that and the wolverine limited series [TS]

01:15:06   are I think why [TS]

01:15:08   Wolverine has like 10 million titles and [TS]

01:15:12   Marvel unlimited [TS]

01:15:14   yeah you can see it beginning there and [TS]

01:15:16   it's really great [TS]

01:15:17   okay chip what do you have left ok I've [TS]

01:15:20   got a lot but i'll make them fast [TS]

01:15:22   adventures around issues 273 277 this is [TS]

01:15:27   around the time that Roger stern and [TS]

01:15:29   John piscina and Tom Palmer did the [TS]

01:15:31   Masters of evil storyline where we're [TS]

01:15:36   like the fourth group of supervillains [TS]

01:15:38   call the Masters of evil invaded the [TS]

01:15:42   Avengers mansion beat the hell out of [TS]

01:15:46   Jarvis trash too trashed all of Steve [TS]

01:15:51   Rogers is priced mementos of his [TS]

01:15:53   childhood things like that it was up it [TS]

01:15:57   was pretty good stuff there up [TS]

01:16:00   Strikeforce moratorium was a series [TS]

01:16:03   written by peter Gillis not part of the [TS]

01:16:06   Marvel Universe future people get turned [TS]

01:16:09   into superheroes to try to defend earth [TS]

01:16:11   from an alien invasion that is not going [TS]

01:16:14   well for the humans catch is the process [TS]

01:16:17   of turning the heroes in turning them [TS]

01:16:19   into superheroes is inevitably fatal [TS]

01:16:22   within a year [TS]

01:16:25   the series ran for a long time but I [TS]

01:16:28   think issues 1 through 20 / where which [TS]

01:16:31   were written by pierre Gillis are the [TS]

01:16:33   good ones only the first three are [TS]

01:16:35   available marvel unlimited but worth [TS]

01:16:37   worth checking out those three the thing [TS]

01:16:40   written by Dan Slott before he has [TS]

01:16:43   amazing spider-man dan slott the thing [TS]

01:16:46   used to be [TS]

01:16:47   marvel's mascot he used to be really [TS]

01:16:50   really big in the nineteen seventies and [TS]

01:16:53   dan slott writes this miniseries as if [TS]

01:16:55   the thing had always been the most [TS]

01:16:59   important character in Marvel and it's [TS]

01:17:01   just tons of fun [TS]

01:17:02   JMS is run on spider-man started better [TS]

01:17:07   than it finished issue have 33 [TS]

01:17:09   that's the most generous thing i've ever [TS]

01:17:12   heard he said about that run ya so I [TS]

01:17:16   i recommend i recommend the issues that [TS]

01:17:18   John Romita drew so that's from where [TS]

01:17:22   JMS started with issue 3358 then another [TS]

01:17:25   numbering change issues 535 oh wait i [TS]

01:17:28   think you get solid quality in those [TS]

01:17:30   runs it was it is my favorite take it [TS]

01:17:34   spider-man and it's just a little [TS]

01:17:36   disappointing that it didn't finish [TS]

01:17:37   quite so well yeah uh Wolverine both [TS]

01:17:40   runs the series by paul cornell 13 13 [TS]

01:17:43   and 12 12 made me care about the [TS]

01:17:45   character again in a way that i hadn't [TS]

01:17:47   cared about the character since way back [TS]

01:17:50   in the marvel comics presents days and [TS]

01:17:53   the first few issues of this solo title [TS]

01:17:56   that were written by Chris Claremont and [TS]

01:17:58   had him doing the Terry and the Pirates [TS]

01:17:59   thing in mod report i actually liked [TS]

01:18:02   that [TS]

01:18:03   and finally strange 2004 miniseries [TS]

01:18:07   Marvel Knights co-written by JMS and [TS]

01:18:10   Sarah quote Sam close quote Barnes it's [TS]

01:18:14   a little weird cause it sort of turns a [TS]

01:18:16   doctor strange into kind of a matrix [TS]

01:18:18   kind of thing but it it's a it's tough [TS]

01:18:22   it's a fresh kind of modern reimagine [TS]

01:18:25   you might call ultimate Doctor Strange [TS]

01:18:26   only it wasn't Ultimate Universe but [TS]

01:18:29   it's a lot of fun [TS]

01:18:30   ok my sense what's on your list what's [TS]

01:18:33   left [TS]

01:18:34   I've got to about 7 billion things [TS]

01:18:36   unitedly also Marvel Comics all of them [TS]

01:18:40   because it is truly unlimited the longer [TS]

01:18:43   run type stuff [TS]

01:18:44   ed Brubaker's are run on Captain America [TS]

01:18:47   much of it drawn by steve epting he has [TS]

01:18:49   been doing a bunch of creator-owned [TS]

01:18:50   stuff with including the winter soldier [TS]

01:18:52   arc which is you know you got mark [TS]

01:18:54   gruenwald captain america and that's [TS]

01:18:56   great and i love it registers got some [TS]

01:18:57   cool stuff to a baker amazing amazing [TS]

01:18:59   run on Captain America you know what [TS]

01:19:01   other stories would he have to write [TS]

01:19:03   after all that stuff a huge favorite of [TS]

01:19:06   mine that I keep telling myself I'm [TS]

01:19:08   gonna buy the Omnibus hardcover of is [TS]

01:19:10   the X statics run by peter milligan and [TS]

01:19:14   mike allred which started out in x-force [TS]

01:19:18   issue 1 16 and then ran into a [TS]

01:19:20   rebranding of the title into X statics [TS]

01:19:22   which is truly one of the most bizarre [TS]

01:19:24   crazy and wonderful and delightful and [TS]

01:19:27   fun superhero longer [TS]

01:19:29   turns out they're also on the long run [TS]

01:19:31   side of things all of runways is on [TS]

01:19:33   there [TS]

01:19:34   yeah somehow that is has been discussed [TS]

01:19:37   here on the show on the shorter run side [TS]

01:19:40   of things I the the estimable gentleman [TS]

01:19:44   to my podcast left mentioned the thing [TS]

01:19:47   miniseries by Dan Slott i would bring up [TS]

01:19:49   dance lots run on she-hulk from 2004 [TS]

01:19:52   which went through one volume and then [TS]

01:19:54   started over a new number one issue this [TS]

01:19:57   is something we've discussed on this [TS]

01:19:58   episode already it happens it happens [TS]

01:20:00   welcome to comedies very fun notable for [TS]

01:20:03   the the moment in the courtroom where [TS]

01:20:05   spider-man is a spider and why why is it [TS]

01:20:07   that you think the j jonah Jameson [TS]

01:20:09   really just has it in for you [TS]

01:20:10   spider-man's as well you know i think [TS]

01:20:14   it's it's because i'm black and jenna [TS]

01:20:18   jameson just walked up but but but I [TS]

01:20:20   mean I did some of my best friends are [TS]

01:20:22   and I and I'm just kidding just kidding [TS]

01:20:24   is only are black [TS]

01:20:27   yeah but yeah it's a it's one of those [TS]

01:20:33   really perfect high-concept pitches is [TS]

01:20:35   ok she hulk is ally mcbeal but she walks [TS]

01:20:38   out so there you go on the on the [TS]

01:20:42   shorter run side of things a criminally [TS]

01:20:44   under red minis untended miniseries [TS]

01:20:47   should have been an ongoing fearless [TS]

01:20:49   defenders written by common bond drawn [TS]

01:20:50   by will slide knee which is a defender [TS]

01:20:53   series with an all-female cast and at [TS]

01:20:55   one point all of those woman's boyfriend [TS]

01:20:57   show up and show up to prove just how [TS]

01:21:00   useless they are Osborne miniseries [TS]

01:21:04   co-written by kelly sue deconnick in [TS]

01:21:05   warren ellis with our by Emma Rios one [TS]

01:21:08   of my favorite bad guy miniseries out [TS]

01:21:11   there also on the bad guy side of things [TS]

01:21:14   magneto written by common bond and drawn [TS]

01:21:15   by gabriel Walter very very recent [TS]

01:21:17   actually and a book that i was [TS]

01:21:20   immediately hooked from the word go a [TS]

01:21:23   couple of Doctor Strange mini series [TS]

01:21:24   Doctor Strange the oath which when [TS]

01:21:26   people ask is there a quick way into dr. [TS]

01:21:29   strange in the comics i say yes start [TS]

01:21:31   with that start with the oath written by [TS]

01:21:32   bryan cave on with art by Marcus Martin [TS]

01:21:34   who went on to do a really great series [TS]

01:21:38   called the private eye which I urge [TS]

01:21:39   people to seek out even though it's not [TS]

01:21:40   a marvel unlimited has no [TS]

01:21:41   indeed with Marvel but it's just so good [TS]

01:21:43   and the other the other doctor strange [TS]

01:21:45   uh well it was an original graphic novel [TS]

01:21:48   I with art by Mark manila mike mignola [TS]

01:21:51   got its it's so late and I'm so a Titan [TS]

01:21:55   in knots by marvel comics that I am i [TS]

01:21:56   messing up my words is dr. strange dr. [TS]

01:21:59   doom triumphant torment which puts these [TS]

01:22:02   two characters who have magic in common [TS]

01:22:05   together for the first time and results [TS]

01:22:09   in an interesting way [TS]

01:22:10   leave it at that the the the other oh [TS]

01:22:15   this creators whole body of work that [TS]

01:22:18   that I would have mentioned would've [TS]

01:22:20   been Steve gerber lots of howard the [TS]

01:22:22   duck stuff [TS]

01:22:22   omega the unknown if anybody knows what [TS]

01:22:24   that is you know there's all right in [TS]

01:22:28   the middle there you go see that and [TS]

01:22:30   that's why it only lasted 10 issues lots [TS]

01:22:32   of really great work by stevers writer [TS]

01:22:34   out there the vision series by tom king [TS]

01:22:39   and Gabriel Walter the artist for [TS]

01:22:40   magneto six issues of that is unlimited [TS]

01:22:42   now and it is so good yeah if I know [TS]

01:22:46   many people who have just dropped all of [TS]

01:22:49   their Marvel books except for this one [TS]

01:22:50   which is going to go to 12 issues and [TS]

01:22:52   then it's done because now Tom King is [TS]

01:22:54   exclusive to DC because I guess they cut [TS]

01:22:57   the bigger check and then I had three [TS]

01:23:00   completely ridiculous ones uh one of [TS]

01:23:04   them being a one-shot that came to [TS]

01:23:06   marvel with the Star Wars acquisition [TS]

01:23:08   and that being Sergio Aragones top star [TS]

01:23:11   wars which is so good because it's if [TS]

01:23:13   you know groove you know Sergio Aragones [TS]

01:23:15   it is everything Sergio Aragones and [TS]

01:23:17   everything the title says and what is [TS]

01:23:20   actually a pair of things there is [TS]

01:23:22   lockjaw and the pet Avengers and tales [TS]

01:23:25   of the pet Avengers yes they're there [TS]

01:23:28   are there is a super pet team book and [TS]

01:23:31   at least there has been twice [TS]

01:23:33   nobody knows that it exists and it's one [TS]

01:23:34   of those weird outliers and most [TS]

01:23:36   ridiculous thing I the models inc [TS]

01:23:40   miniseries written by Paul Tobin with [TS]

01:23:43   art by Jorge Molina which was which was [TS]

01:23:46   a way to I guess use models inc the [TS]

01:23:50   license and [TS]

01:23:51   bring back classic marvel character [TS]

01:23:54   Millie the model model Millie the model [TS]

01:23:56   it's only four issues long and it's [TS]

01:23:58   actually really well written and every [TS]

01:24:00   cover looks like the cover of a magazine [TS]

01:24:03   look at that a marathon brand could that [TS]

01:24:05   be and and yeah i i'm i'm sad that there [TS]

01:24:10   were a number of things that I was like [TS]

01:24:11   I'll just put this on my list and surely [TS]

01:24:13   that's on Marvel unlimited but no the [TS]

01:24:14   crew by Christopher priest not unlimited [TS]

01:24:17   slingers which was a kid team book that [TS]

01:24:20   spun out of spider-man having to create [TS]

01:24:22   for other identities in the nineties [TS]

01:24:26   that's not on their superior foes of [TS]

01:24:28   spider-man also not on there but even [TS]

01:24:31   even without those there's all this [TS]

01:24:32   ridiculous crap that I've been speaking [TS]

01:24:34   about Helen much money i will i will say [TS]

01:24:36   it back to my earlier point about them [TS]

01:24:38   sort of progressing and although it's [TS]

01:24:40   not great it's better than it was i am [TS]

01:24:42   impressed that every week there are our [TS]

01:24:45   another 30 or 50 issues old issues that [TS]

01:24:49   get dumped on Marvel unlimited in [TS]

01:24:51   addition to whatever is new and it's [TS]

01:24:53   whatever it has their attention that [TS]

01:24:55   month right like hey the new leu kid [TS]

01:24:58   show is on [TS]

01:24:59   here's all the luke cage issues we could [TS]

01:25:00   scan in that sort of thing happens but [TS]

01:25:03   they do keep adding so there's always [TS]

01:25:04   hope that some others next top models [TS]

01:25:07   back so here's models models a series so [TS]

01:25:10   here's my list of things that I didn't [TS]

01:25:11   know that I didn't pick ms marvel from [TS]

01:25:14   2014 Hawkeye as we mentioned ultimate [TS]

01:25:18   comics spider-man that's the Miles [TS]

01:25:19   Morales run from 2011 issues 1 428 I [TS]

01:25:23   jonathan hickman's New Avengers and [TS]

01:25:25   Avengers combo new avengers 2 1 2 33 and [TS]

01:25:28   Avengers 1 240 for this is the lead into [TS]

01:25:31   the secret wars its cosmic there's [TS]

01:25:33   parallel universes and that people have [TS]

01:25:35   to destroy and secret imaginations of [TS]

01:25:37   the Illuminati and it's pretty good it's [TS]

01:25:39   pretty good especially red and I i don't [TS]

01:25:42   think i would have liked to divide it [TS]

01:25:44   had to read it over three years but i [TS]

01:25:46   didn't have to [TS]

01:25:47   so it was pretty great reading it in a [TS]

01:25:50   short amount of time the great classic [TS]

01:25:52   1994 Marvel's miniseries is available on [TS]

01:25:55   Marvel unlimited it's beautiful [TS]

01:25:58   you should look at it if you haven't [TS]

01:25:59   seen that 1i like all new x-men 1 [TS]

01:26:02   through 15 then they do an event called [TS]

01:26:04   battle of the atom and [TS]

01:26:05   sort of it's not as good anymore but [TS]

01:26:06   this is the one of the original x-men [TS]

01:26:08   were brought to the present via time [TS]

01:26:11   travel and had to deal with what their i [TS]

01:26:14   love that rather adults elves have grown [TS]

01:26:17   up to be and what's funny about it is [TS]

01:26:19   they stay like they're now they're in [TS]

01:26:22   the present and we get the old x-men in [TS]

01:26:24   the present along with their future [TS]

01:26:26   counterparts [TS]

01:26:27   it's kinda cool it's a good idea good [TS]

01:26:29   good job [TS]

01:26:30   comic books you that's the kind of stuff [TS]

01:26:31   you should be doing is weird weird stuff [TS]

01:26:34   like that [TS]

01:26:35   exiles i recommend to somebody just the [TS]

01:26:37   other day [TS]

01:26:38   exiles are hundred issues of it and [TS]

01:26:39   they're all on Marvel unlimited it's the [TS]

01:26:41   multiverse x-men title and it's a [TS]

01:26:44   shifting group of mutants from various [TS]

01:26:47   parallel universes who hops from [TS]

01:26:49   parallel to parallel solving crimes and [TS]

01:26:52   righting wrongs and there's a little [TS]

01:26:54   back story about why they're doing it [TS]

01:26:56   that's pretty interesting as it unfolds [TS]

01:26:58   to so I like that one a lot of great [TS]

01:27:01   packs 13 as you run extreme x-men is [TS]

01:27:03   very similar [TS]

01:27:04   that's another parallel universe x-men [TS]

01:27:06   story like exiles I like that one a lot [TS]

01:27:08   good use of dazzler and that one by the [TS]

01:27:09   way to mention could use it as she's [TS]

01:27:12   kind of a burned-out rock rock star in [TS]

01:27:14   that one and wears cowboy boots and I [TS]

01:27:16   like that that's a good dazzler Joss [TS]

01:27:19   Whedon's astonishing x-men 1 424 that's [TS]

01:27:22   a good run and that's all I marvel [TS]

01:27:24   unlimited max penises x-men worst X man [TS]

01:27:27   ever [TS]

01:27:28   all five issues are now available on [TS]

01:27:30   Marvel's unlimited i recommended that in [TS]

01:27:31   the previous show and you know go back [TS]

01:27:34   to the stuff that you love uncanny x-men [TS]

01:27:37   issues like a hundred and ten hundred [TS]

01:27:40   and eight through like I don't know 17 [TS]

01:27:43   th somewhere in there that's just a [TS]

01:27:46   great run that's what got the john byrne [TS]

01:27:47   issues and paul smith issues and and [TS]

01:27:50   then it kind of gets to john romita jr. [TS]

01:27:52   and the there get there are a lot of [TS]

01:27:54   stories about Forge and then it's a lot [TS]

01:27:55   less interesting and you could stop at [TS]

01:27:57   any point then if you like that's my [TS]

01:28:00   list [TS]

01:28:01   Florence I'm a little bit let down that [TS]

01:28:04   we did that we behave yourselves so well [TS]

01:28:06   and we didn't plan more really off the [TS]

01:28:09   wall crazy stuff I think we've got a lot [TS]

01:28:11   of crazy stuff I just I one more of the [TS]

01:28:14   crazy stuff [TS]

01:28:15   alright giant-sized little marble AVS [TS]

01:28:18   skottie young super adorable baby x-men [TS]

01:28:21   vs. baby Avengers oh it's so good [TS]

01:28:24   the power pack series by various by [TS]

01:28:29   various writers i think but the power [TS]

01:28:31   pack and team-ups the artist was gray [TS]

01:28:34   here ooh these are the new power-packed [TS]

01:28:37   series that are just outside of Marvel [TS]

01:28:39   continuity they're just automate like [TS]

01:28:41   they're delightful mentioning powerpack [TS]

01:28:44   I wish that that Louis Simonson's [TS]

01:28:46   original running power pack were all on [TS]

01:28:48   there but there's this weird sort of [TS]

01:28:49   like I don't know 10 or 12 issues parts [TS]

01:28:53   starting part of the way into the Run [TS]

01:28:54   which is strange and who knows maybe [TS]

01:28:56   it's a licensing issue i don't remember [TS]

01:28:59   if like rom shows up for a panel to go [TS]

01:29:01   away everybody I'm roms you later [TS]

01:29:12   list of all of this stuff in there and [TS]

01:29:15   you can you can add to your your your [TS]

01:29:18   library or wish list or whatever the [TS]

01:29:20   thing is that you do in Marvel unlimited [TS]

01:29:21   but I hope now that if you are a marvel [TS]
