00:00:06   September 2015 welcome back everybody to [TS]

00:00:12   be in comfortable i'm your host Jason [TS]

00:00:14   still and joining me are a great group [TS]

00:00:18   of people to do something we like to [TS]

00:00:19   call old movie club movie club 2nite [TS]

00:00:25   we're going to be talking about two [TS]

00:00:26   films that have an actor in common or [TS]

00:00:29   perhaps two actors in common but one of [TS]

00:00:32   them is more important than the other [TS]

00:00:35   these are the hustler from 1961 an [TS]

00:00:39   anatomy of a murder from 1959 joining me [TS]

00:00:42   to talk about these old movies that you [TS]

00:00:44   should go on you go watch perhaps [TS]

00:00:46   because some of the idea i think i've [TS]

00:00:48   never seen either of these join me are [TS]

00:00:51   Steve let's hello hello there Jason fair [TS]

00:00:54   warning to listeners out there we may be [TS]

00:00:56   seeing the word panties during this [TS]

00:00:58   episode so let's get the snickering out [TS]

00:01:01   of our systems now okay [TS]

00:01:03   exactly what I was doing I know a French [TS]

00:01:04   word might be a little suggest kind of [TS]

00:01:08   suggested most French words are at is [TS]

00:01:10   good stuff David laura is also there [TS]

00:01:12   hello David and no Monty Ashley as is [TS]

00:01:16   out there Monty hi jason and the [TS]

00:01:19   internets dr. Drake joins us again [TS]

00:01:21   thereby depriving our chat room of its [TS]

00:01:23   only participant it's like it's like [TS]

00:01:25   when you want to give a presentation in [TS]

00:01:27   front of one person you just ask him to [TS]

00:01:28   come up on stage and join in the fun [TS]

00:01:31   well i doctored ring hello lady bird and [TS]

00:01:36   the ringleader for all of this of course [TS]

00:01:38   is mr. Philip Michaels hello [TS]

00:01:40   I've often heard about the clear customs [TS]

00:01:42   of this incomparable podcast now I see [TS]

00:01:45   that they're actually in place but it's [TS]

00:01:48   very it's very true [TS]

00:01:51   Phil can you explain to us why you chose [TS]

00:01:53   these two films for us why why that's a [TS]

00:01:57   company accusatory well um ah at as is [TS]

00:02:02   the case with most old movie clubs [TS]

00:02:05   because i enjoy the movies also i had [TS]

00:02:07   them on the DVR and was feeling very [TS]

00:02:09   lazy ride on a certain extent but [TS]

00:02:12   mom I want to expose you and the wider [TS]

00:02:17   world to the greatness of George see [TS]

00:02:19   scott who I think is a magnificent [TS]

00:02:22   supporting actor and a pretty good lead [TS]

00:02:24   actor if you've ever seen patent but [TS]

00:02:26   these are two of his performances that a [TS]

00:02:31   10 not really get remembered in the inn [TS]

00:02:35   but by General movie lovers so you [TS]

00:02:38   really there [TS]

00:02:39   I wouldn't call him deep cuts but that [TS]

00:02:41   you do have to have some sort of [TS]

00:02:42   knowledge of the the movies to know that [TS]

00:02:46   he's even in these their anatomy of a [TS]

00:02:48   murder is a very small role in a [TS]

00:02:50   memorable role in the hustler is one of [TS]

00:02:52   the central characters and I think I [TS]

00:02:55   perhaps i'll be disabused of this notion [TS]

00:02:58   I think he's fantastic and both and and [TS]

00:03:00   the best thing about both movies and so [TS]

00:03:03   I just wanted to to spend an evening [TS]

00:03:05   talking about the glory or non glory of [TS]

00:03:09   George see Scott now i watch the [TS]

00:03:10   complete first and only season of Fox's [TS]

00:03:13   to come mr. president do I get any [TS]

00:03:15   credit for that [TS]

00:03:16   no fact I think Georgie Scott Campbell [TS]

00:03:19   Scott owe you an apology [TS]

00:03:21   huh apparently I i lied i saw one [TS]

00:03:23   episode of mr. president and so haha [TS]

00:03:25   that that was pretty much the whole [TS]

00:03:27   season and then I went away [TS]

00:03:28   well that would be the point of George [TS]

00:03:30   see Scott's career when it was anything [TS]

00:03:32   for a paycheck [TS]

00:03:33   mhm most actors do reach that point it's [TS]

00:03:35   something i would agree with you feel [TS]

00:03:37   that George see Scott is the highlight [TS]

00:03:39   of both of these films and unfortunately [TS]

00:03:41   for me that makes the rest of the film [TS]

00:03:44   seem somewhat this is to somewhat pale [TS]

00:03:47   in comparison to the moment when he's [TS]

00:03:49   not on screen but think about that is we [TS]

00:03:51   i'm sure that we will and shall we start [TS]

00:03:54   with anatomy of a murder well a [TS]

00:03:55   chronological is a perfectly good way to [TS]

00:03:57   do it or or alphabetical you could do [TS]

00:03:59   alphabetical too because it's still [TS]

00:04:01   anatomy of murder [TS]

00:04:02   well then then let's start with anatomy [TS]

00:04:04   of a murder see what i did there are [TS]

00:04:05   exactly what i said it was i watch them [TS]

00:04:07   in the opposite order as I always to [TS]

00:04:09   what is wrong with you lots [TS]

00:04:12   we don't have enough time podcast is not [TS]

00:04:13   long so anatomy of a murder is an auto [TS]

00:04:16   premature movie Otto Preminger's a an [TS]

00:04:19   interesting director and and and i think [TS]

00:04:21   dr. dre might want to jump in and [TS]

00:04:23   and the East strikes me as a fellow who [TS]

00:04:26   probably has some opinions about Otto [TS]

00:04:28   Preminger this was I think the point and [TS]

00:04:30   Otto Preminger's career when he was just [TS]

00:04:32   fascinated with processes and how things [TS]

00:04:35   work because he made both this movie [TS]

00:04:37   which is essentially a murder trial from [TS]

00:04:40   start to finish with with very little of [TS]

00:04:43   it left on the cutting room floor up and [TS]

00:04:45   I think his follow-up movie to this was [TS]

00:04:46   advise and consent which is basically if [TS]

00:04:49   you took that ABC saturday morning [TS]

00:04:51   cartoon about how a bill becomes a law [TS]

00:04:53   and turn into a pot I remember auto [TS]

00:04:57   premature being on a laugh in a lot [TS]

00:05:00   he was also feeling on Batman well yeah [TS]

00:05:02   but Mr Freeze yeah uh you know later [TS]

00:05:05   taken over by by arnold schwarzenegger [TS]

00:05:08   so there's kind of a german thing I [TS]

00:05:10   don't you know I reason head it's been [TS]

00:05:15   cold in germany and austria that's right [TS]

00:05:17   apparently yes [TS]

00:05:19   you know i'm not i'm not a big Otto [TS]

00:05:20   Preminger fan i don't think i've ever [TS]

00:05:22   seen Laura which i think is probably his [TS]

00:05:25   best movie the top movie and what made [TS]

00:05:27   his reputation yeah I love this one is [TS]

00:05:30   up based on a book that was written by a [TS]

00:05:33   a judge I believe a Michigan judge under [TS]

00:05:36   a pseudonym and it is a case of a murder [TS]

00:05:42   case as you might determine from the [TS]

00:05:44   movie that starts Jimmy Stewart is in [TS]

00:05:46   turn quite a twist it was like [TS]

00:05:48   jaywalking yeah and yeah you really [TS]

00:05:51   don't pack it in for anatomy of a of a [TS]

00:05:53   of a civil suit a minor infraction but [TS]

00:05:57   you wouldn't see it coming but anatomy [TS]

00:06:00   of probate now they don't know that [TS]

00:06:02   Jimmy Stewart is a defense attorney he [TS]

00:06:06   used to be the the county prosecutor it [TS]

00:06:08   it turns out that he lost the election [TS]

00:06:10   and he is not taking the loss well [TS]

00:06:12   because he spends most of his days [TS]

00:06:14   fishing and not being a very dedicated [TS]

00:06:17   lawyer but he and being a terrible boss [TS]

00:06:20   by be exactly he's is his very good [TS]

00:06:24   drunk [TS]

00:06:24   yes his businesses is is on the brink of [TS]

00:06:27   ruin his secretary Parton who I would [TS]

00:06:31   also say as a highlight of the movie is [TS]

00:06:33   stevie is disagree playing bird no no [TS]

00:06:35   I'm happy to see her in something [TS]

00:06:37   other than Greece yes Miss Brooks 44 r4r [TS]

00:06:41   decrepit listeners have foot which has [TS]

00:06:45   all of them is oh yeah but he is tapped [TS]

00:06:49   to do to to be the council in a murder [TS]

00:06:53   case in which an army lieutenant played [TS]

00:06:56   by Ben Gazzara it's impossible to say [TS]

00:06:58   his name without saying it like that [TS]

00:07:01   Ben Gazzara is accused of is accused of [TS]

00:07:05   murdering the demand the bartender who [TS]

00:07:08   raped his wife who's played by a very [TS]

00:07:10   young very dishy Lee Remick um and uh we [TS]

00:07:16   are as the case involves we are we are [TS]

00:07:19   sort of led to believe that Ben bizarre [TS]

00:07:21   is not exactly innocent of well it's [TS]

00:07:23   clear that he did it hit the if the [TS]

00:07:26   defense they settle on is that he was [TS]

00:07:27   temporary temporarily insane and whether [TS]

00:07:32   that's a bull crap or not is left to you [TS]

00:07:35   the audience member to determine its [TS]

00:07:38   probably bullcrap but it's james stewart [TS]

00:07:41   and his and his dear friend drunken [TS]

00:07:44   Arthur O'Connell if it's better now but [TS]

00:07:46   creepy and parnell is the the biggest [TS]

00:07:50   drunk and all of the upper peninsula and [TS]

00:07:53   the state he asked Jimmy Stewart's words [TS]

00:07:55   give up the bose if you want to work on [TS]

00:07:57   the case [TS]

00:07:58   No so give up for some reason that never [TS]

00:08:00   becomes clear and I'm thinking it over [TS]

00:08:02   so he can drive to Canada without [TS]

00:08:03   swerving off the road [TS]

00:08:05   yes and yes he does only on the way back [TS]

00:08:07   another thing that never pays off in any [TS]

00:08:09   way or makes any difference whatsoever [TS]

00:08:11   yeah i recently watched users has [TS]

00:08:14   exactly the same plot except the drunk [TS]

00:08:15   actually has a reason to be a drunk [TS]

00:08:17   yes well he's in the u.p there's not [TS]

00:08:21   much else to do it up no right to tell [TS]

00:08:23   me half my family's in the u.p I was [TS]

00:08:25   there last year [TS]

00:08:26   that's the entire story okay there you [TS]

00:08:30   go [TS]

00:08:30   they settle on this uh temporary [TS]

00:08:32   insanity defense they're going up [TS]

00:08:35   against the the man who beat Jimmy [TS]

00:08:38   Stewart for the seat of county [TS]

00:08:40   prosecutor and it turns out he is a [TS]

00:08:42   terrible he's gone so great now I'm [TS]

00:08:44   right I i would take a case against him [TS]

00:08:47   to which makes you wonder how he lost to [TS]

00:08:48   him in the first place [TS]

00:08:49   Brooks west [TS]

00:08:50   believe was married to Eve Arden yep he [TS]

00:08:52   was yes I just got the sense that Jimmy [TS]

00:08:55   Stewart is self-defeating that he you [TS]

00:08:58   know that he he's a better lawyer but [TS]

00:09:01   you know not a better maybe it's not a [TS]

00:09:03   better politician [TS]

00:09:04   yeah so you like that was a he was da [TS]

00:09:07   for 10 years so you did all right for [TS]

00:09:08   himself he sounds awfully young to have [TS]

00:09:10   already been da for 10 years I don't [TS]

00:09:13   know he looks a little love a little [TS]

00:09:14   older than I remember him yeah it's got [TS]

00:09:16   some he's got some great articles [TS]

00:09:18   although it is all great given the Milky [TS]

00:09:20   films in black-and-white he's 51 if you [TS]

00:09:22   want but uh Mitch the district attorney [TS]

00:09:27   Mitch terrible stupid mitch is aware of [TS]

00:09:30   his limitations and brings in a hired [TS]

00:09:32   gun from from the shelter from lands of [TS]

00:09:35   fancy babysitting dancing frog legs and [TS]

00:09:39   lansing michigan and that would be where [TS]

00:09:40   George see Scott enters the picture as [TS]

00:09:43   the brilliantly named Claude dancer yes [TS]

00:09:45   even has a closers name is perfect and [TS]

00:09:49   so of after about an hour of setting all [TS]

00:09:52   this up [TS]

00:09:53   that's where it gets kinda long we just [TS]

00:09:57   wear well i was i was going to say it [TS]

00:09:59   picks up at the moment they get into the [TS]

00:10:00   courtroom three [TS]

00:10:01   finally I are you saying the same thing [TS]

00:10:03   Steve the first hour of the movie is a [TS]

00:10:05   lot of lot of setting up and a lot of [TS]

00:10:07   hey let's meet all the players in this [TS]

00:10:09   drama [TS]

00:10:10   did you guys notice lyric my god no I [TS]

00:10:14   believe Ike ice i use the words dishy [TS]

00:10:16   yeah yeah yeah right straight from [TS]

00:10:19   Colliers magazine [TS]

00:10:20   yeah she's lovely but it is offset by [TS]

00:10:23   the fact that she comes off as intensely [TS]

00:10:25   creepy throughout the entire my notes [TS]

00:10:27   say super weird and flirty but super [TS]

00:10:30   weird [TS]

00:10:31   in fact that she's hitting on Bigler a [TS]

00:10:33   couple of days after her supposed rape [TS]

00:10:35   and and obvious beating is just really [TS]

00:10:37   off-putting it's yes we should point out [TS]

00:10:39   that that Lee Remick was probably [TS]

00:10:43   probably beat up by back gazzara after [TS]

00:10:47   quite possibly of the rate by the [TS]

00:10:49   bartender who we never actually uh see [TS]

00:10:52   photos of I don't believe just very [TS]

00:10:54   clear on the world shots [TS]

00:10:56   yeah on the wall but uh the the first [TS]

00:10:59   hour of the movie as i said is is a lot [TS]

00:11:01   of setup and then it's the court case [TS]

00:11:03   which for me is where [TS]

00:11:04   picks up I i think the the court case [TS]

00:11:07   has your it's it's a very interesting [TS]

00:11:09   legal drama with your twists and your [TS]

00:11:11   turns [TS]

00:11:12   I don't know how much we want to get [TS]

00:11:13   into those twists and turns but it's a [TS]

00:11:16   lot of Jimmy Stewart sparring with [TS]

00:11:18   George see Scott where which i think is [TS]

00:11:20   the most interesting part of this movie [TS]

00:11:24   oh absolutely mm and uh to jump ahead to [TS]

00:11:29   the the verdict it turns out that dhara [TS]

00:11:32   it do we want to spoil the ending [TS]

00:11:34   yes yeah can you spoil this ending I I [TS]

00:11:39   think so I mean other than the fact [TS]

00:11:40   table he gets off that's Eon thing the [TS]

00:11:43   easies exonerated right and uh Jimmy [TS]

00:11:46   Stewart and and and no longer drunken [TS]

00:11:49   Arthur O'Connell go to collect that go [TS]

00:11:52   to collect the check from from him and [TS]

00:11:54   if he he skips town and they have a good [TS]

00:11:58   laugh about how they're not going to pay [TS]

00:11:59   their secretary again [TS]

00:12:01   end of story but they are but they are [TS]

00:12:04   going to extremely in extremely sleazy [TS]

00:12:06   fashion then go and and do probate on [TS]

00:12:09   the state of the daughter of the rapist [TS]

00:12:13   of the rapist or the guy they've just [TS]

00:12:14   hard as a race breakfast possibly i [TS]

00:12:16   should point out that on the while he [TS]

00:12:19   was the it's pretty much implied that [TS]

00:12:22   that he did [TS]

00:12:23   raper the question is just how much did [TS]

00:12:26   the how crazy was the lieutenant when he [TS]

00:12:28   went and shot the rapist [TS]

00:12:30   I'm not certain that's ever really made [TS]

00:12:31   clear to be honest you're not i think [TS]

00:12:34   that is by the fact that they find the [TS]

00:12:35   and I only going to use this word once i [TS]

00:12:39   hope you get all the peoples out of the [TS]

00:12:40   way they find the panties of the of Lee [TS]

00:12:43   Remick in Barney quills laundry or at [TS]

00:12:46   the in the hotel laundry there found by [TS]

00:12:49   the daughter of Barney quill part equal [TS]

00:12:52   is the the deceased mom [TS]

00:12:54   the daughter was secretly his daughter [TS]

00:12:57   she was actually closing in public as [TS]

00:13:00   his business manager and she's on whom [TS]

00:13:03   the case turns Mary plant is her name [TS]

00:13:06   and the cross-examination of Mary plant [TS]

00:13:09   by George see Scott where George Scott [TS]

00:13:11   overplays hand is my favorite puppet of [TS]

00:13:15   the movie and George these guys over [TS]

00:13:17   so wonderful at being you know ultra [TS]

00:13:20   confident and then blowing it [TS]

00:13:22   yes right and and this is absolutely [TS]

00:13:24   this moment where he reacted he does the [TS]

00:13:27   lawyer mistake of asking a question that [TS]

00:13:29   he doesn't know the answer to [TS]

00:13:31   yeah and uh she gives him because he's [TS]

00:13:35   my father and the look that George see [TS]

00:13:38   Scott at that moment and then he [TS]

00:13:41   immediately tries to recover and then [TS]

00:13:43   fails to recover and doesn't comfort it [TS]

00:13:45   is it is a brilliant acting turn it is [TS]

00:13:48   worth the price of admission for this [TS]

00:13:49   admittedly to our in 40 minute movie but [TS]

00:13:53   i would quibble about the rapid [TS]

00:13:56   introduction of evidence that that the [TS]

00:14:01   other side of the of the case hasn't [TS]

00:14:03   seen before except it already happened [TS]

00:14:05   the other way like 20 minutes it'll here [TS]

00:14:07   we're at a magic witness appears that [TS]

00:14:09   the the defense knows nothing about and [TS]

00:14:13   you know I think now we've seen so much [TS]

00:14:16   so many legal TV shows and so many legal [TS]

00:14:18   films that you look at that you go come [TS]

00:14:20   on [TS]

00:14:21   and I mean there's a lot of shorthand [TS]

00:14:22   happening here because although this [TS]

00:14:24   movie is long it is not as long as an [TS]

00:14:25   actual court case [TS]

00:14:26   yeah but but that any an agreement [TS]

00:14:28   certainly builds up the drama and I [TS]

00:14:31   found that I forgive the ultimate twist [TS]

00:14:34   because it's been set up by you know the [TS]

00:14:37   it's almost like all's fair here because [TS]

00:14:40   the the you know they got bushwhacked by [TS]

00:14:42   a biometric mystery witness not too long [TS]

00:14:45   before that and and I should point out [TS]

00:14:48   that a that i became aware of this movie [TS]

00:14:52   because a mutual friend of ours Jason [TS]

00:14:53   was in law school at the time Andy they [TS]

00:14:56   showed this movie to the second or third [TS]

00:14:59   year law school students as a well it's [TS]

00:15:02   overly dramatized but this is not a a [TS]

00:15:05   bad recreation of what a trial is like [TS]

00:15:07   especially with the the the search for [TS]

00:15:10   precedent and the way that you handle [TS]

00:15:13   cross-examination really are our mutual [TS]

00:15:16   friends only quibble is the scene where [TS]

00:15:17   Jimmy Stewart jumps up to speed and [TS]

00:15:19   scream Jackson Jackson because that [TS]

00:15:22   isn't that is absolutely calling the [TS]

00:15:24   jury's attention to something that you [TS]

00:15:26   don't want them to remember [TS]

00:15:30   this episode of the incomparable is [TS]

00:15:32   brought to you by Harry's now shaving [TS]

00:15:35   can be a pain it can be uncomfortable [TS]

00:15:36   razor burn Knicks all that kind of stuff [TS]

00:15:38   can also be expensive and hard to shop [TS]

00:15:41   for [TS]

00:15:41   sometimes i go to the drugstore and the [TS]

00:15:44   blades are behind a plastic thing [TS]

00:15:46   they're locked up they don't have the [TS]

00:15:48   blades that I need but for the last year [TS]

00:15:50   so I but not have that problem because [TS]

00:15:52   i've been using Harry's for my shaving [TS]

00:16:06   the first blades they made their they [TS]

00:16:09   liked it so much they bought the factory [TS]

00:16:11   and now Harry's owns the factory in [TS]

00:16:13   Germany where their blades are made wipe [TS]

00:16:14   a $32 for an eight pack of blades it's [TS]

00:16:16   half that price of Harry's and with [TS]

00:16:18   Harry's you get a better shade respects [TS]

00:16:33   blades I've actually changed the way i [TS]

00:16:35   shave now and improved it by using [TS]

00:16:39   Harry's wonderful shaving lotion and [TS]

00:17:19   really nice shaving equipment Harry's [TS]

00:17:42   today and thank you too Harry [TS]

00:17:44   sponsoring this edition of being [TS]

00:17:45   comfortable i don't know whether this is [TS]

00:17:51   something that happened a lot before [TS]

00:17:53   whether this is one of the popularizers [TS]

00:17:55   of it but he he literally has the I'm [TS]

00:17:58   just a good old country lawyer spindle [TS]

00:18:00   this this is kind of like the trope as [TS]

00:18:03   they say yeah I'm just a humble country [TS]

00:18:05   lawyer trying to do the best I can [TS]

00:18:07   against this brilliant prosecutor from [TS]

00:18:09   the big city of an NCAA it if it when [TS]

00:18:12   when I watched it with my family years [TS]

00:18:14   and years ago my mother called the [TS]

00:18:16   anatomy of a Matlock [TS]

00:18:17   oh hi i mean it's it's it's not it's not [TS]

00:18:20   as simplistic as that but it's it's just [TS]

00:18:22   the the tropes of the country lawyer and [TS]

00:18:24   you know but the folks eNOS of it and I [TS]

00:18:27   imagine this was one of the first film's [TS]

00:18:28   to really come to take the time I mean [TS]

00:18:31   this is not a shorthand of a legal case [TS]

00:18:33   this is this is the whole legal case you [TS]

00:18:35   get about what an hour of setup where [TS]

00:18:37   you're basically witnessing all the [TS]

00:18:39   evidence and how this whole for the case [TS]

00:18:41   comes together [TS]

00:18:42   yeah i would say this in the wrong man [TS]

00:18:44   are probably two two sides of the same [TS]

00:18:48   coin where it's it's going through the [TS]

00:18:50   the various legal processes to to [TS]

00:18:53   varying degrees of impact and for [TS]

00:18:55   dramatic sake there there's information [TS]

00:18:57   that's withheld but you get a pretty [TS]

00:19:00   good sense of legal strategy on the part [TS]

00:19:03   of jimmy stewart and struggling with [TS]

00:19:06   problematic facts which i think is a [TS]

00:19:08   really interesting that we don't ever [TS]

00:19:10   really feel confident in lieutenant [TS]

00:19:14   Mannion idea Sarah and you have been [TS]

00:19:17   google because RM and and laura lee [TS]

00:19:19   remick is you know like i said super [TS]

00:19:22   weird and disturbing and she's very [TS]

00:19:25   flirty and we can talk [TS]

00:19:27   I mean one of it's very difficult to [TS]

00:19:28   look at a movie from 1959 through the [TS]

00:19:30   lens of 2015 [TS]

00:19:32   it's fascinating in that it's got a lot [TS]

00:19:35   of subject matter that I'm surprised was [TS]

00:19:37   even discussed I mean well that is a [TS]

00:19:39   very much in Otto Otto Preminger thing [TS]

00:19:42   yeah yeah you always you always push the [TS]

00:19:44   envelope yes you don't simply say [TS]

00:19:46   panties and movies back then you did not [TS]

00:19:50   talking about talking about a rape in in [TS]

00:19:52   a decent amount of detail and about you [TS]

00:19:54   know did they find semen and things like [TS]

00:19:56   that is [TS]

00:19:57   this is firm sorry did they find sperm [TS]

00:19:59   was brought to completion I mean yeah [TS]

00:20:01   that that's all there and then the [TS]

00:20:03   portrayal of of Laura there are moments [TS]

00:20:06   that it gave me the the creeps [TS]

00:20:09   because there are some implications at [TS]

00:20:12   some point of a few people that there's [TS]

00:20:15   the implication of you know did she [TS]

00:20:16   deserve it [TS]

00:20:18   that gives that makes my skin crawl [TS]

00:20:19   right is the most difficult part of [TS]

00:20:21   watching this movie today is it takes a [TS]

00:20:24   very i wish i could say of its time but [TS]

00:20:28   a very retrograde attitude towards [TS]

00:20:32   sexual assault [TS]

00:20:33   well i'm not sure the movie takes that [TS]

00:20:34   stance i mean certainly their characters [TS]

00:20:36   in the film that take that stance but [TS]

00:20:38   the film itself if anything it makes the [TS]

00:20:41   save the guys at the the army guys that [TS]

00:20:44   he talks with seem like other cats for [TS]

00:20:47   having that viewpoint as opposed to [TS]

00:20:48   siding with them i'd say Laura I mean [TS]

00:20:50   that there are two ways to view Laura [TS]

00:20:51   right one way is that you know this is [TS]

00:20:55   who she is she is flirty and that's just [TS]

00:20:57   who she is and it's a little bit weird [TS]

00:20:59   if you're not expecting that she so [TS]

00:21:00   forward but just because she's flirty [TS]

00:21:03   you know she's married and she can do [TS]

00:21:06   what you essentially she can do what she [TS]

00:21:07   wants but the rape is still rape on the [TS]

00:21:10   other hand I feel like she's not [TS]

00:21:12   portrayed as a victim other than like [TS]

00:21:15   the bruises she gets she's she's making [TS]

00:21:18   moves on Jimmy Stewart you know a couple [TS]

00:21:19   of days after you know she's been raped [TS]

00:21:22   and her husband has has killed a guy [TS]

00:21:25   it is weird it just it feels it feels [TS]

00:21:28   weird and I kept trying to parse it as i [TS]

00:21:30   went and at times it was uncomfortable [TS]

00:21:31   and at times i was impressed that it [TS]

00:21:33   wasn't as bad as I feared it it would be [TS]

00:21:36   and that you know you're right Steve [TS]

00:21:38   that some of these other characters [TS]

00:21:39   don't come across very well at all but [TS]

00:21:41   it did it was very uncomfortable that [TS]

00:21:43   whole you know a lot of love lyrics [TS]

00:21:45   performance [TS]

00:21:46   well as some of that is is what made me [TS]

00:21:48   wonder if if the rape even occurred at [TS]

00:21:50   all I mean George Scott makes a good [TS]

00:21:52   point towards the end which is that [TS]

00:21:54   those panties could have been placed [TS]

00:21:55   there laughing please could have been [TS]

00:21:57   placed in a laundry chute by anybody [TS]

00:21:59   else including Lee Remick herself and [TS]

00:22:01   this whole thing could have possibly [TS]

00:22:02   been planned by the both of them at and [TS]

00:22:06   I just wonder if maybe the sort of [TS]

00:22:08   creepiness the sort of a [TS]

00:22:10   no the flirtiness isn't is meant to keep [TS]

00:22:12   that sort of open-ended I mean the whole [TS]

00:22:15   kind of the whole point of this is that [TS]

00:22:16   we only see really what happens from [TS]

00:22:19   Jimmy Stewart's point of view right i [TS]

00:22:21   mean we really find out what happened [TS]

00:22:23   which is intriguing [TS]

00:22:24   well I know that first conversation he [TS]

00:22:26   has with with ben gazzara he's like I'm [TS]

00:22:29   just going to suggest a few things you [TS]

00:22:31   might want to think if you can remember [TS]

00:22:32   Mike and absolutely gives him the idea [TS]

00:22:35   to claim insanity right yeah that's why [TS]

00:22:38   I think more than the procedural aspects [TS]

00:22:41   of the trial I think that's why lawyers [TS]

00:22:43   like this uh this movie it's because it [TS]

00:22:47   has the moral ambiguity parts of it in [TS]

00:22:50   its end on both sides [TS]

00:22:52   I mean Jimmy Stewart is doing things and [TS]

00:22:54   saying things that are you know what we [TS]

00:22:58   would expect a forthright Jimmy Stewart [TS]

00:23:00   character to do and Georgie Scott and [TS]

00:23:04   and the doofus that he's working with do [TS]

00:23:06   the same thing they they're withholding [TS]

00:23:08   evidence that George see scott knows [TS]

00:23:10   perfectly well the the temporary [TS]

00:23:13   insanity case uh that this that Jimmy [TS]

00:23:17   Stewart's case is hinged and knows it's [TS]

00:23:19   he just said he just doesn't say it [TS]

00:23:21   yeah it because the the the bad turn he [TS]

00:23:25   is like a doofus that rages no injuries [TS]

00:23:28   guys like what makes up you know you all [TS]

00:23:31   along without opening the judge would [TS]

00:23:33   know he was hope he was hoping that [TS]

00:23:34   Jimmy Stewart wouldn't find the [TS]

00:23:35   president but he absolutely knows that [TS]

00:23:37   the president's there i love that so [TS]

00:23:39   yeah that's great see ya my favorite [TS]

00:23:41   thing about George he's got in this [TS]

00:23:42   movie is how much time he doesn't spend [TS]

00:23:44   doing anything just sitting there [TS]

00:23:47   watching jimmy stewart clearly knowing [TS]

00:23:49   everything that's going on and every [TS]

00:23:51   time his do this buddy starts to panic [TS]

00:23:54   you you can tell from Georgie Scott [TS]

00:23:57   whether or not they're going to win the [TS]

00:24:00   argument that there's two moments of [TS]

00:24:02   George see Scott subtlety in that vein [TS]

00:24:03   that I really really love there's the [TS]

00:24:05   very early scene when when dancer [TS]

00:24:08   assuming bigler to be a country rube [TS]

00:24:10   tries to get man examined by the state [TS]

00:24:13   psychiatrist late and without formal [TS]

00:24:15   petition but then it'd be cooler proves [TS]

00:24:17   that he knows that you know that's not [TS]

00:24:20   going to fly if they actually bring it [TS]

00:24:21   for the judge and she's trying to reach [TS]

00:24:23   I wrote it through and Scott is just so [TS]

00:24:26   smooth and the way he changes gears here [TS]

00:24:28   soon as he realizes the Biegler knows [TS]

00:24:30   what he's talking about you at you and [TS]

00:24:32   instantly know that we have the makings [TS]

00:24:34   of a great duel here and the other is [TS]

00:24:37   there's a scene where Biegler in people [TS]

00:24:40   being the job at the jimmy stewart [TS]

00:24:41   character in mock anger he slams his [TS]

00:24:44   hand down on the table right in front of [TS]

00:24:46   George see scott in one of his tirades [TS]

00:24:49   who's just sitting there with his you [TS]

00:24:51   know his hands under his chin and and [TS]

00:24:54   and you see him to George see scott dann [TS]

00:24:56   are I'd jump a little bit you know [TS]

00:24:58   because there's somebody slamming his [TS]

00:24:59   fist on the table right in front of him [TS]

00:25:00   but he otherwise just doesn't react at [TS]

00:25:02   all and it is hysterical reaction george [TS]

00:25:05   scott also delivers my favorite line of [TS]

00:25:07   the movie and it's set up by Jimmy [TS]

00:25:09   Stewart Jimmy Stewart is objecting to [TS]

00:25:11   something he says that Allah blesses the [TS]

00:25:13   lawless truck I've ever seen in a [TS]

00:25:15   courtroom and Georgie Scott just says [TS]

00:25:17   you haven't lived one thing I think is [TS]

00:25:21   weirdly missing from this movie is the [TS]

00:25:23   end of the trial like after going [TS]

00:25:26   through every witness and everybody [TS]

00:25:28   cross-examination they skip the closing [TS]

00:25:30   arguments entirely except to say that [TS]

00:25:32   was the best closing argument I've ever [TS]

00:25:33   seen I guess I think we already sava the [TS]

00:25:35   trials that we don't need to see the [TS]

00:25:37   summation but it's like come on it's not [TS]

00:25:39   so much the summation i want i really [TS]

00:25:42   need the scene where George Scott walked [TS]

00:25:44   over and shakes Jimmy Stewart's hands as [TS]

00:25:46   well you beat me or something because we [TS]

00:25:49   never seen this guy lose did you want to [TS]

00:25:51   see him lose Monty I kind of don't I [TS]

00:25:52   want I want the closure yeah I want to [TS]

00:25:54   see how he takes to losing to a humble [TS]

00:25:56   country lawyer [TS]

00:25:57   yeah I guess I'm Indiana to I feel I [TS]

00:25:59   don't feel bad for George Scott at any [TS]

00:26:01   point in this movie even even when he [TS]

00:26:02   asked that question because I feel like [TS]

00:26:04   he's doing he he's done everything he [TS]

00:26:06   can hear right well they're both doing [TS]

00:26:08   what they're supposed yeah you're right [TS]

00:26:09   there and clear defending their clients [TS]

00:26:11   are they're prosecuting the client to [TS]

00:26:12   the best of their ability within the [TS]

00:26:14   within the law [TS]

00:26:15   I like uh and again there may be some [TS]

00:26:18   questions about the reality but i like [TS]

00:26:19   the theatrical objections not just [TS]

00:26:22   objection objection but the the sparring [TS]

00:26:24   they do where Jimmy Stewart is trying [TS]

00:26:26   very hard to get the circumstances of [TS]

00:26:28   the rape into the into the into the case [TS]

00:26:31   and into the range of the record in [TS]

00:26:33   front of the jury and he tries in a few [TS]

00:26:35   different ways and you can see him [TS]

00:26:36   trying to get it in and and what's also [TS]

00:26:39   funny is that both sides are playing the [TS]

00:26:41   game of bringing things up that the [TS]

00:26:44   judge says you know we're going to [TS]

00:26:46   strike that from the record you you know [TS]

00:26:47   they withdraw their objection and the [TS]

00:26:48   jury will disregard which is I think you [TS]

00:26:51   see him that you've seen a million times [TS]

00:26:52   and I've always had the same question [TS]

00:26:53   which is voiced by Lieutenant Mannion [TS]

00:26:56   which is how can a jury disregard what [TS]

00:26:58   is already heard and and Jimmy Stewart [TS]

00:27:00   says they can't lieutenant [TS]

00:27:02   yeah there's a there's a lawyer's have a [TS]

00:27:04   phrase for that it's called on ringing [TS]

00:27:06   the bell and I'm kind of surprised that [TS]

00:27:09   that maybe that didn't exist back in the [TS]

00:27:11   fifties I don't know I've heard it many [TS]

00:27:13   many times from attorneys and lawyers [TS]

00:27:16   always want to do that uh they always [TS]

00:27:19   want to oh excuse me judge I you know [TS]

00:27:21   and then in and have something come out [TS]

00:27:23   that objection to or not the jury hears [TS]

00:27:27   it right and they know it and if it's in [TS]

00:27:29   and I've seen this in news reports that [TS]

00:27:32   if this goes too far [TS]

00:27:34   they will just call a mistrial right so [TS]

00:27:37   you as a job as a as a lawyer you have [TS]

00:27:40   to be very careful because if you do too [TS]

00:27:41   much of this it will be misconduct you [TS]

00:27:43   will get in trouble and you will lose [TS]

00:27:44   your case they will they will start [TS]

00:27:46   again if you if you talk so you're [TS]

00:27:49   walking a fine line when you do stuff [TS]

00:27:50   like this and if this movie wasn't too [TS]

00:27:52   much of that I can't imagine what would [TS]

00:27:54   be there really getting getting the the [TS]

00:27:57   rape into the case seems like a pretty [TS]

00:27:59   huge you know infraction of that [TS]

00:28:02   particular role well mr. Biegler you got [TS]

00:28:05   your rape into the case I feel like both [TS]

00:28:07   sides do it a little bit which is why I [TS]

00:28:09   kind of forgive it is that is that it [TS]

00:28:11   seems like this isn't a parallel [TS]

00:28:13   universe where more of this is allowed [TS]

00:28:14   than then I don't think both sides do it [TS]

00:28:17   equally I think it's ninety-nine percent [TS]

00:28:20   Jimmy Stewart he does most of it there's [TS]

00:28:22   no doubt about it that that's his [TS]

00:28:24   essentially his strategy at the [TS]

00:28:25   beginning is just to keep on objecting [TS]

00:28:26   to things and trying to trying to get [TS]

00:28:29   this extra information into bias the [TS]

00:28:31   jury his tactic is to go to fire and [TS]

00:28:34   force the other side to object [TS]

00:28:36   he's constantly ask inappropriate [TS]

00:28:38   questions that have a good say I'm gonna [TS]

00:28:41   warn you again counselor he doesn't care [TS]

00:28:43   about the warnings he's a district [TS]

00:28:45   attorney doofus like has that one [TS]

00:28:47   objection where he looks like five [TS]

00:28:49   different yet [TS]

00:28:50   that he's objecting to that's wonderful [TS]

00:28:52   moment to well that's too much for me [TS]

00:28:54   so folks if this is the power the power [TS]

00:28:56   of the folksy is Jimmy Stewart and his [TS]

00:28:58   folks easiest hear ya do we want to say [TS]

00:29:01   a word about Joseph Welch let's be [TS]

00:29:03   honest yes [TS]

00:29:04   yeah haven't talked about him at all up [TS]

00:29:07   this one this week [TS]

00:29:08   good lord yeah there are two pieces of [TS]

00:29:12   stunt casting in this movie [TS]

00:29:14   yes one is Duke Ellington and why I [TS]

00:29:17   thanks bye I what's that guy doing in [TS]

00:29:20   the Upper Peninsula of Michigan what [TS]

00:29:22   have you that we get the soundtrack that [TS]

00:29:24   we do with this film on I'm almost [TS]

00:29:25   infinite I'm okay with that and all with [TS]

00:29:27   you on that [TS]

00:29:28   I'm perfectly fine with Duke Ellington [TS]

00:29:30   but Joseph well she's unbelievably bad [TS]

00:29:33   it has won a contest and it's it's it's [TS]

00:29:36   I I mean we are you know we know his [TS]

00:29:38   history we know why they wanted him [TS]

00:29:40   there because of the army McCarthy trial [TS]

00:29:42   and you know have you know shamed [TS]

00:29:44   senator at long last Senator McCarthy [TS]

00:29:46   but he's awful and terrible in this [TS]

00:29:50   movie [TS]

00:29:50   okay I'm not gonna I'm not gonna exactly [TS]

00:29:52   disagree with you [TS]

00:29:53   um I I am I loved him I I feel like you [TS]

00:29:59   go into a courtroom somewhere and you're [TS]

00:30:01   going to get a judge in every judges a [TS]

00:30:03   person and they're gonna have their own [TS]

00:30:04   personality and I thought this was just [TS]

00:30:05   like well we got this guy this is going [TS]

00:30:08   to be the guy and and he's Corey's [TS]

00:30:09   quirky and all they got a guy who speaks [TS]

00:30:11   English like he learned it phonetically [TS]

00:30:12   it has no idea what he said open would [TS]

00:30:14   Steve defendant Joseph Welch all right [TS]

00:30:17   well maybe love Joseph Welch is a bit [TS]

00:30:19   strong i love the character I liked the [TS]

00:30:22   lines they gave him i can digest pig [TS]

00:30:25   iron is particularly great and I thought [TS]

00:30:28   he pulled it off okay i don't know [TS]

00:30:30   anything about who Joseph Welch is or [TS]

00:30:32   why that stunt casting so maybe you can [TS]

00:30:34   know for me he was the attorney in the [TS]

00:30:38   army but the the McCarthy hearings who [TS]

00:30:41   oh ok put uh just McCarthy street [TS]

00:30:44   got it okay you always the one who said [TS]

00:30:47   have you no sense of decency sir [TS]

00:30:49   ya got it and and I should point out [TS]

00:30:51   that auto premature love stuck casting [TS]

00:30:54   and in the a4 mentioned Annette advising [TS]

00:30:58   advise and consent he is it he wanted to [TS]

00:31:01   cast Martin Luther [TS]

00:31:02   King jr. as a senator from Alabama then [TS]

00:31:06   the end it was all going to happen and [TS]

00:31:07   then it sort of unraveled at the end did [TS]

00:31:09   that but the otto preminger never met a [TS]

00:31:13   stunt casting thing he didn't like he [TS]

00:31:15   cast Peter Lawford as a John Kennedy [TS]

00:31:17   like character in advising consent as [TS]

00:31:20   well [TS]

00:31:20   incidentally part of the jury mrs. [TS]

00:31:22   Joseph Welch yeah that was the payment [TS]

00:31:25   there was one that was his condition for [TS]

00:31:28   accepting the role lovely to jason [TS]

00:31:30   stevens point I i think the character of [TS]

00:31:33   the judge is fine i sniff-sniff easy [TS]

00:31:36   though his quirkiness is fine i think [TS]

00:31:38   it's written perfectly well and judges [TS]

00:31:41   do that sort of crap in court where they [TS]

00:31:43   come in and they tell little stories and [TS]

00:31:46   they did it [TS]

00:31:47   it's very weird of his very weird but he [TS]

00:31:50   doesn't deliver it well I i thought the [TS]

00:31:53   delivery complimented the goofiness of [TS]

00:31:55   the character it didn't come off as [TS]

00:31:56   stunned as stilted to me so much as this [TS]

00:31:59   is just an odd duck and this is the way [TS]

00:32:01   he acts and and I would compare him to [TS]

00:32:04   clarence and it's a wonderful life now [TS]

00:32:07   also has a very bizarre way of [TS]

00:32:08   delivering lines there's there's a line [TS]

00:32:10   he delivers that some well there's no [TS]

00:32:12   need to make a federal case of it and [TS]

00:32:15   there's this pause its size it as if the [TS]

00:32:19   audience is supposed to erupt into gales [TS]

00:32:21   of laughter at this and I've i I've [TS]

00:32:24   never really gotten that have you ever [TS]

00:32:26   seen a judge try to tell a joke in a [TS]

00:32:28   courtroom [TS]

00:32:29   yeah that's how it goes but Otto [TS]

00:32:31   Preminger can cut away to more [TS]

00:32:33   interesting things instead of keeping [TS]

00:32:35   the camera there on the judge telling [TS]

00:32:37   this this legend thing I i it's it's [TS]

00:32:40   it's just an odd decision that I think [TS]

00:32:43   undermine movie [TS]

00:32:45   alright well i did not hate him I [TS]

00:32:46   actually quite enjoyed it what could I [TS]

00:32:49   guess charitably be called a performance [TS]

00:32:51   discovered it was weird and quirky and [TS]

00:32:53   unexpected i would say which is why I [TS]

00:32:55   kind of enjoyed also you'll never look [TS]

00:32:56   at Floyd the barber from massey Andy [TS]

00:32:58   Griffith Show quite the same way after [TS]

00:33:00   he was working in Genesis a couple of [TS]

00:33:02   tournaments [TS]

00:33:03   yes yes end it [TS]

00:33:05   I had a few notes yeah go through your [TS]

00:33:07   notes I i like the line but that's a [TS]

00:33:10   crazy name for a crazy lawyer I thought [TS]

00:33:13   that was hilarious and weird [TS]

00:33:15   yeah Jimmy Stewart warns her about booze [TS]

00:33:18   and pinball machines and Men and juke [TS]

00:33:20   joints i really enjoyed that too [TS]

00:33:22   that's good advice to anyone and one of [TS]

00:33:24   my favorite things in the movie and and [TS]

00:33:26   it becomes obvious if if you're watching [TS]

00:33:28   but i noticed it from the very beginning [TS]

00:33:30   is there is a scene where George see [TS]

00:33:33   Scott is is talking to a witness and [TS]

00:33:37   he's standing between the witness and [TS]

00:33:39   Jimmy Stewart and Jimmy Stewart it and [TS]

00:33:41   it happens it starts a little bit slowly [TS]

00:33:43   he you see a moving in the background [TS]

00:33:45   which is what got my attention you're [TS]

00:33:46   like why that's a weird choice [TS]

00:33:48   directorial but what's happening is [TS]

00:33:50   every time George see Scott moves he [TS]

00:33:52   steps in front of jimmy stewart and [TS]

00:33:53   ollie so hilarious has to move and get [TS]

00:33:55   out of the way and finally it's like it [TS]

00:33:57   just keeps getting in my way but I [TS]

00:33:58   thought that was really that was that [TS]

00:34:01   made me laugh along the way it's stage [TS]

00:34:02   is great too because you notice it [TS]

00:34:04   before I think Jimmy Stewart yes [TS]

00:34:06   yeah you immediately see that he's [TS]

00:34:07   blocked off Jimmy Stewart your view of [TS]

00:34:09   Jimmy Stewart so you immediately know [TS]

00:34:10   what he's up to and it's it's great that [TS]

00:34:12   is I i agree that is my favorite thing [TS]

00:34:14   there too and George Scott is obviously [TS]

00:34:15   doing it instinctively because he never [TS]

00:34:18   takes his eyes off electronic now during [TS]

00:34:20   that he's he's he's looking at the [TS]

00:34:22   witness all the time and he's doing it [TS]

00:34:23   with his back to Jimmy Stewart he's [TS]

00:34:25   blocking him all the time and he has [TS]

00:34:27   great response when Jimmy Stewart [TS]

00:34:28   objects [TS]

00:34:29   I'm sorry I didn't mean to prevent the [TS]

00:34:31   council from second witness then you do [TS]

00:34:36   it again and I'll knock your block off [TS]

00:34:38   that isn't overly hospital does anyone [TS]

00:34:42   else have any notes that they want to [TS]

00:34:44   get out yes I i have many infantile [TS]

00:34:46   running with boy the actual best part of [TS]

00:34:49   the movie which has not been mentioned [TS]

00:34:50   which is the opening credit sequence I [TS]

00:34:53   we have baskets so good and the [TS]

00:34:56   disjointed body working so well with [TS]

00:35:00   that Rudy 2d jazz may call it movie [TS]

00:35:03   thanks bye if people don't want to watch [TS]

00:35:05   two hours and 40 minutes of movie at [TS]

00:35:07   least watch the opening credits they're [TS]

00:35:09   the best opening credits ever i do not [TS]

00:35:12   find it charming that Jimmy Stewart buys [TS]

00:35:15   outboard motors instead of paying his [TS]

00:35:16   employees [TS]

00:35:18   he's already you're really fixated on [TS]

00:35:20   what a terrible bossy said she's [TS]

00:35:23   literally working without pay and he's [TS]

00:35:25   buying things with the money he's [TS]

00:35:27   supposed to pay her this this is happens [TS]

00:35:30   right when they're trying to set him up [TS]

00:35:31   as charmingly eccentric go out fishing [TS]

00:35:33   that's fine [TS]

00:35:35   buying new motors that's not fine [TS]

00:35:38   so how're you supposed to bass fish [TS]

00:35:40   without a new motor mounting the [TS]

00:35:42   supposed to row i did not think that we [TS]

00:35:45   needed a trick dog in this movie [TS]

00:35:47   no I often don't think we need to trick [TS]

00:35:50   dog but it's really not nice one [TS]

00:35:51   especially not in San no dog I don't [TS]

00:35:54   understand that whole scene is like [TS]

00:35:56   right day we got a dog in a cage let's [TS]

00:35:58   let the dog out there is the dog ok [TS]

00:36:00   goodbye to the dog now look you can hold [TS]

00:36:03   a little light looking drinks beer and [TS]

00:36:04   passing down god I thought I was finding [TS]

00:36:06   that mrs. Manion said that she wears her [TS]

00:36:08   glasses for reading playing pinball [TS]

00:36:10   things like that you know but that bad [TS]

00:36:13   general category reading involvement [TS]

00:36:15   she's a she's a cool day man this is [TS]

00:36:18   going to involve the word panties ok but [TS]

00:36:20   i will remind you know tittering there [TS]

00:36:23   isn't anything funny with panties that [TS]

00:36:25   figure in the pilot death of one man and [TS]

00:36:27   the possible incarceration of another [TS]

00:36:28   yep thank you just well it's weird that [TS]

00:36:31   he did not mention also a woman was [TS]

00:36:33   raped and that's why they're here not [TS]

00:36:35   it's just how they affect these two guys [TS]

00:36:39   over huh [TS]

00:36:40   is it strange that in 1959 a courtroom [TS]

00:36:43   full of adults would have laughed at [TS]

00:36:45   that it seems like it to me [TS]

00:36:46   it's a funny word panties are hilarious [TS]

00:36:49   particularly I don't know who I'm [TS]

00:36:51   talking to a doubt it because it [TS]

00:36:53   keywords are funny ok like pancreas yes [TS]

00:36:56   HIGHlarious word platipus see my god me [TS]

00:37:03   oh my oh yeah now moving moment has [TS]

00:37:06   passed pooks and finally this Ruby [TS]

00:37:10   contains the line if they're high [TS]

00:37:12   they're gay and happy [TS]

00:37:14   yeah I refuse to provide context know [TS]

00:37:17   why would you ruin I see the rest of my [TS]

00:37:20   time I was a little surprised at the the [TS]

00:37:23   importance of the girdle i I've never [TS]

00:37:25   really thought of the girdle as being [TS]

00:37:27   something to make a woman less [TS]

00:37:29   attractive i always think of it [TS]

00:37:31   something that's that's there to hold in [TS]

00:37:34   not attractive jiggle but larger jiggle [TS]

00:37:37   than any woman would like to be showing [TS]

00:37:39   so that I thought was odd if you go [TS]

00:37:42   around without a girdle then you're [TS]

00:37:43   clearly a libertine apparently yes the [TS]

00:37:46   the very long sequence where Jimmy [TS]

00:37:49   Stewart was trying to get Marie hamilton [TS]

00:37:51   who is like george scott in both of [TS]

00:37:53   these movies to say wolf [TS]

00:37:56   okay it wasn't there was no sense that [TS]

00:37:59   was very anticlimactic [TS]

00:38:01   have you ever heard the term washer went [TS]

00:38:04   on with whalebone corsets [TS]

00:38:07   yeah because well that's going on [TS]

00:38:08   thinking what are they going to come out [TS]

00:38:09   with here and don't know it comes out [TS]

00:38:11   with wolf [TS]

00:38:12   well alright fine i thought master was [TS]

00:38:14   perfectly good to measure is good maybe [TS]

00:38:17   master of like you know whatever and at [TS]

00:38:19   the end [TS]

00:38:20   uh when Jimmy and and Arthur O'Connell [TS]

00:38:24   are you know I've gone to the to the [TS]

00:38:26   trailer and the trailers gone and [TS]

00:38:28   there's a trash can and you know [TS]

00:38:31   arthropod also we never trust a guy who [TS]

00:38:33   drinks gin there is I believe a blatz [TS]

00:38:36   beer can in the trashcan you're going to [TS]

00:38:39   besmirch in when there's a pan of blacks [TS]

00:38:41   in the trashcan there in the Upper [TS]

00:38:43   Peninsula of Michigan I cannot [TS]

00:38:45   adequately convey it is absolutely [TS]

00:38:48   perfect if it really is black stripes I [TS]

00:38:51   stopped and I tried to you know I tried [TS]

00:38:53   to look at that really blasters at the [TS]

00:38:54   end of its what is it [TS]

00:38:56   but you know if it's really black that's [TS]

00:38:58   perfect now that that is that's [TS]

00:39:00   wisconsin in the u.p all over is why I [TS]

00:39:04   enjoy this movie it's a great before it [TS]

00:39:06   it's an all-time performance by George [TS]

00:39:08   see Scott um and there are some very [TS]

00:39:11   good supporting performances by your [TS]

00:39:14   your Eve Arden here Arthur O'Connell's a [TS]

00:39:16   lot of good supporting work in this [TS]

00:39:18   movie I like Jimmy Stewart movies where [TS]

00:39:21   Jimmy Stewart is kind of he still Jimmy [TS]

00:39:24   Stewart but he's a little bit bent we [TS]

00:39:26   watched rope earlier in an episode on [TS]

00:39:30   with the the anthony mann movies are a [TS]

00:39:33   good example of [TS]

00:39:35   of Jimmy Stewart whose hey I'm still [TS]

00:39:38   good and decent but not all the time and [TS]

00:39:42   this is one of those movies we've talked [TS]

00:39:44   about the moral ambiguity of that [TS]

00:39:46   character is a long movie yeah just [TS]

00:39:50   Josef well kinda drag everything down [TS]

00:39:52   the at times he does but it's a nice [TS]

00:39:56   little potboiler of a legal drama with [TS]

00:39:59   some really sensational performances and [TS]

00:40:02   again Jimmy Stewart as sort of turning [TS]

00:40:08   our expectations of what Jimmy Stewart [TS]

00:40:10   should be up on its head [TS]

00:40:11   I i enjoy that kind of picture and I I [TS]

00:40:14   think that's two hours and 40 minutes [TS]

00:40:15   well spent [TS]

00:40:16   yeah I go along with that you're a [TS]

00:40:18   beautiful man [TS]

00:40:19   okay i know that i've been saying that [TS]

00:40:21   for you but mentioning the wrong man and [TS]

00:40:25   and putting it in here and i would i [TS]

00:40:27   would put twelve angry men in there too [TS]

00:40:30   these were films that at the time to [TS]

00:40:33   push the envelope and showed us the [TS]

00:40:37   legal process we didn't have the same [TS]

00:40:39   kind of you know we didn't have the [TS]

00:40:41   accumulated weight of decades of perry [TS]

00:40:43   mason and LA Law and Boston Legal & and [TS]

00:40:47   the practice and you know every John [TS]

00:40:50   Grisham novel and every rider that wants [TS]

00:40:51   to be John Grisham and so now you know [TS]

00:40:53   we don't need that we have the shorthand [TS]

00:40:56   we know the basics we know guilty by [TS]

00:40:59   reason of insanity right at the time [TS]

00:41:02   this was revolutionary like all we get [TS]

00:41:05   to see the whole process the whole [TS]

00:41:07   procedure and and I mean this the the [TS]

00:41:12   other thing i don't i can remember if we [TS]

00:41:14   mentioned this or not this is inspired [TS]

00:41:16   by a true story of a guy wrote it [TS]

00:41:18   basically was the first lawyer to get a [TS]

00:41:21   new resistible impulse conviction in [TS]

00:41:23   michigan and he wrote the novel based on [TS]

00:41:25   that and then this is him crowing about [TS]

00:41:27   it x where they didn't focus on the jury [TS]

00:41:29   at all have you seen Joseph westerns [TS]

00:41:32   wife that is the one part of the of the [TS]

00:41:35   legal process that they really left on [TS]

00:41:37   the cutting room floor the jury [TS]

00:41:39   selection process so i enjoyed the movie [TS]

00:41:43   well good for you thanks very much [TS]

00:41:45   that's all i have to say but only [TS]

00:41:46   because I Joseph Welch was mainly [TS]

00:41:48   because of just [TS]

00:41:49   it's just melted what else are you there [TS]

00:41:52   you know I I actually sat down i was [TS]

00:41:55   gonna watch half of it and then come [TS]

00:41:57   back the next day and watch have the [TS]

00:41:58   other half and i ended up watching the [TS]

00:41:59   whole thing because it was I found it [TS]

00:42:01   interesting particularly I the idea of [TS]

00:42:04   never knowing from beginning to end what [TS]

00:42:05   really happened I I find that really [TS]

00:42:07   intriguing I being you know the kind of [TS]

00:42:09   the the DA's viewer the lawyers view of [TS]

00:42:12   of a murder case and I really like all [TS]

00:42:15   the little mysterious details like I'm [TS]

00:42:17   really curious to know how Lauren knows [TS]

00:42:19   dancer from the attorney general's [TS]

00:42:21   office because she's the one who passes [TS]

00:42:23   in the note right saying watch out for [TS]

00:42:25   him but there's just not that much to [TS]

00:42:29   this case at just certainly not enough [TS]

00:42:31   to sustain 2 hours and 40 minutes and [TS]

00:42:34   that's kind of my biggest problem with [TS]

00:42:35   it I mean after the first 30 minutes we [TS]

00:42:37   we really only learned one new piece of [TS]

00:42:39   information which is the fact that Mary [TS]

00:42:41   was Barney quill daughter and and [TS]

00:42:43   there's all sorts of filler in here I [TS]

00:42:45   mean without scenes of cars driving [TS]

00:42:46   around people washing fish jamming with [TS]

00:42:50   III you notice that this would be a much [TS]

00:42:52   more reasonable length movie i think and [TS]

00:42:54   the whole McCarthy Sobers up plot is [TS]

00:42:57   kinda pointless the fact that he drives [TS]

00:42:59   into a barn is a big waste of time I [TS]

00:43:01   will grant you it is not economical [TS]

00:43:03   movie so I you know I'm not sure I would [TS]

00:43:06   want to watch this over and over again [TS]

00:43:08   but i definitely enjoyed it I i love [TS]

00:43:11   George see as usual i always enjoy Jimmy [TS]

00:43:14   Stewart and and overall I i enjoyed the [TS]

00:43:17   film just didn't follow utterly in love [TS]

00:43:19   with it but you know it's it's a hard [TS]

00:43:21   film to love I'll accept that it has [TS]

00:43:24   some really nice things in it but I [TS]

00:43:27   didn't find a slog I mean it again you [TS]

00:43:29   know it's not it's not something on your [TS]

00:43:31   wall going to watch many many times [TS]

00:43:33   after the first hour and listen to what [TS]

00:43:35   I just said on i agree i kept thinking [TS]

00:43:38   though as I was watching the first time [TS]

00:43:40   that all the little bits and pieces that [TS]

00:43:42   were sort of randomly thrown in there is [TS]

00:43:45   filler we're going to pay off at some [TS]

00:43:46   point and no men most of them just were [TS]

00:43:50   ya like that the whole you know McCarthy [TS]

00:43:52   driving into the barn it that's going to [TS]

00:43:54   play and at some point right [TS]

00:43:56   oh we're gonna have seen him in a [TS]

00:43:57   hospital bed we're gonna forget all [TS]

00:43:58   about it so i reaiiy rewatched last [TS]

00:44:01   night just to refresh my memory [TS]

00:44:03   and.and I kind of fell asleep halfway [TS]

00:44:04   through because I was no longer willing [TS]

00:44:06   to give it the benefit of the doubt on [TS]

00:44:07   those items this episode of the [TS]

00:44:12   uncomfortable is brought to you by [TS]

00:44:13   casper mattresses obsessively engineered [TS]

00:44:16   american-made mattresses at a shockingly [TS]

00:44:18   fair price if you are a human being and [TS]

00:44:20   not a robot you spend about a third of [TS]

00:44:23   your life sleeping [TS]

00:44:24   you should make sure you're doing it on [TS]

00:44:25   a good mattress Casper brings together [TS]

00:44:28   too comfortable technologies and that [TS]

00:44:31   gives you better nights and brighter [TS]

00:44:33   days there's a latex foam and memory [TS]

00:44:35   foam you may have heard about memory [TS]

00:44:36   foam on its own [TS]

00:44:38   I don't know they put a latex foam layer [TS]

00:44:40   on top it's just the right sink just the [TS]

00:44:43   right balance that's what they say i can [TS]

00:44:45   tell you because I sleep on one it's [TS]

00:44:47   absolutely true and Casper's a risk-free [TS]

00:44:49   trial and return policy you may be [TS]

00:44:52   saying to yourself I don't know buying a [TS]

00:44:53   mattress on the internet sounds a little [TS]

00:44:55   bit weird [TS]

00:44:56   there's no risk they'll deliver it [TS]

00:44:58   straight to you comes in a box you open [TS]

00:45:00   it up it expands to fill the space and [TS]

00:45:02   then you can sleep on it for as long as [TS]

00:45:04   a hundred days and at any point in that [TS]

00:45:06   if you are not happy with your caster [TS]

00:45:09   mattress they will pick it back up and [TS]

00:45:10   take it away and you'll get your money [TS]

00:45:13   back [TS]

00:45:13   it's pretty cool i have 1 i've been [TS]

00:45:15   sleeping on it since late last year it [TS]

00:45:17   was a big upgrade for us over the [TS]

00:45:19   mattress that we had bought at one of [TS]

00:45:20   these master stores locally i'm really [TS]

00:45:23   liking at my love aches and pains that I [TS]

00:45:25   felt before gone home [TS]

00:45:27   honestly it is a very nice mattress and [TS]

00:45:29   if it wasn't i wouldn't say that they're [TS]

00:45:32   not paying me to tell you how good the [TS]

00:45:35   the sleeping is on this bed i'm just [TS]

00:45:37   going to tell you that as a bonus [TS]

00:45:38   because it's true [TS]

00:45:39   so what is a Casper cost five hundred [TS]

00:45:41   dollars for a twin size mattress 954 a [TS]

00:45:43   king of the prices range kinda in the [TS]

00:45:45   middle there [TS]

00:45:46   compare that to your industry averages [TS]

00:45:47   very very good price and you can get a [TS]

00:45:50   special deal [TS]

00:45:51   fifty dollars toward any mattress [TS]

00:45:52   purchase by going to Casper dot-com / [TS]

00:45:55   smell my last name and using code smell [TS]

00:45:58   terms and conditions do apply so thank [TS]

00:46:01   you so much to casper mattresses [TS]

00:46:02   providing me with a good night's sleep [TS]

00:46:04   for almost a year now and for sponsoring [TS]

00:46:07   the uncomfortable [TS]

00:46:10   sure we move on to our next film [TS]

00:46:14   yes let's well let's go two years into [TS]

00:46:17   the future together [TS]

00:46:19   Oh John Kennedy is now president but [TS]

00:46:22   Castle a good baseball team [TS]

00:46:26   I have no other knowledge about 1961 [TS]

00:46:29   haha the hustler [TS]

00:46:31   so this is the story of that Eddie [TS]

00:46:34   Felson Fast Eddie who is a bit of a pool [TS]

00:46:38   shark bit of a pool hustler if you will [TS]

00:46:41   I described them as cocky and he shows [TS]

00:46:45   up and he wants to take on Minnesota [TS]

00:46:47   Fats but we were introduced to Eddie he [TS]

00:46:51   he is just a businessman on his way to [TS]

00:46:53   pittsburgh with another guy [TS]

00:46:55   yeah haven't drinks in a diner that was [TS]

00:46:58   a bit of scam yeah there's it and enjoy [TS]

00:47:00   it so hastily even usual for in 1961 [TS]

00:47:03   movie in that there's a there's a scene [TS]

00:47:06   before the titles where I Eddie and his [TS]

00:47:09   partner go into a pool hall and they [TS]

00:47:12   they totally scam everyone have their [TS]

00:47:15   money by by making Eddie appear to be a [TS]

00:47:19   horrible drunkard who can't who who [TS]

00:47:22   can't sing a simple pool shot right and [TS]

00:47:25   good number they get in a fight because [TS]

00:47:26   he wants to keep playing and his partner [TS]

00:47:28   leaves and so is like everybody else is [TS]

00:47:31   like well you know I can play this guy [TS]

00:47:33   he's totally drunken and then he takes [TS]

00:47:35   them because he is a a pool hustler [TS]

00:47:37   right you know I wasn't fold at all [TS]

00:47:40   because i read the poster I want to [TS]

00:47:41   comment on these credits in contrast to [TS]

00:47:44   the credits in anatomy of the murder [TS]

00:47:45   these credits are like the credits of a [TS]

00:47:47   TV show [TS]

00:47:48   oh yeah yeah tonight on The Hustler the [TS]

00:47:50   hustler assholes and other people get [TS]

00:47:53   hustled I'm Ostler special guest star [TS]

00:47:55   George see Scott yeah it is in [TS]

00:47:58   CinemaScope though i don't i don't think [TS]

00:48:00   i've ever seen a black and white movie [TS]

00:48:02   and CinemaScope other than this one [TS]

00:48:04   it's so weird to me that it's in [TS]

00:48:05   CinemaScope because it's such a [TS]

00:48:06   claustrophobic movie [TS]

00:48:08   yeah it's all inside yet to keep [TS]

00:48:10   reminding myself these guys are supposed [TS]

00:48:11   to be 70 feet tall when you're watching [TS]

00:48:13   this it is and and yet it is a beautiful [TS]

00:48:17   shot movie [TS]

00:48:18   oh it is oh yeah the pool things in [TS]

00:48:20   particular are fantastic [TS]

00:48:22   so speaking of wet [TS]

00:48:23   the after we get through the credits [TS]

00:48:26   sequence we get to the scene at the Ames [TS]

00:48:30   pool hall which I I always thought was [TS]

00:48:33   an Iowa but it's apparently a pool hall [TS]

00:48:35   in new york uh where Fast Eddie Felson [TS]

00:48:40   takes on Minnesota Fats in a all all [TS]

00:48:43   night all morning all the next day pool [TS]

00:48:46   contest in which basically it's not over [TS]

00:48:49   to Minnesota Fats says it's over and [TS]

00:48:52   Fast Eddie jumps out ahead and then [TS]

00:48:56   loses everything because as George Scott [TS]

00:48:59   points out later on the movie [TS]

00:49:00   festivities a bit of a loser he actually [TS]

00:49:02   pointed out right here for the rest [TS]

00:49:04   today with this kid he's a loser he's a [TS]

00:49:05   loser exactly just looked into his eye [TS]

00:49:07   and reads is so I feel like George see [TS]

00:49:09   Scott could actually do that if you [TS]

00:49:11   offer sure everybody can read your soul [TS]

00:49:15   they just have to shower off after so [TS]

00:49:18   Eddie shaken to the court he loses [TS]

00:49:21   everything arm is broken and ends up [TS]

00:49:25   shacking up with Piper Laurie please [TS]

00:49:29   Sarah packard in the movie [TS]

00:49:31   yes it's nice to see Piper Laurie and [TS]

00:49:33   something where she doesn't end up in [TS]

00:49:34   pale to the wall with the kitchen [TS]

00:49:36   cutlery this was her last movie before [TS]

00:49:38   Kari apparently yeah I wasn't sure if [TS]

00:49:41   anything else she had done [TS]

00:49:43   twin peaks eventually okay eventually no [TS]

00:49:45   sheep she basically retired for a while [TS]

00:49:47   and then came back for Carrie but a [TS]

00:49:51   piper laurie has your own issues [TS]

00:49:53   you could say that yeah another [TS]

00:49:57   unbelievably creepy female lead I think [TS]

00:49:59   I'll sure sure that that would be the [TS]

00:50:01   other theme of tonight's a movie club [TS]

00:50:04   creepy female lead she's a bit drunk [TS]

00:50:07   she's a bit of a fabulist but she and [TS]

00:50:11   Paul Newman sort of fall for each other [TS]

00:50:13   and are good for each other Paul Newman [TS]

00:50:16   still lusts for the the the the hustle [TS]

00:50:21   the the the the site of easy money and [TS]

00:50:25   keeps going to the the pools to beat [TS]

00:50:27   people some people recognize them as the [TS]

00:50:29   pool hustler that he has other people do [TS]

00:50:32   not until he takes them for their money [TS]

00:50:33   and then they break his thumbs weird [TS]

00:50:36   as George see Scott had prepped his [TS]

00:50:38   prophesied yes immediately before that [TS]

00:50:41   seed yes and was gonna break your thumbs [TS]

00:50:44   and which point he falls in with George [TS]

00:50:47   see scott who will become his manager [TS]

00:50:50   and who will show him how to become a [TS]

00:50:54   winner and not the loser that he is who [TS]

00:50:56   always is a overplaying his hand and out [TS]

00:51:01   reaching his station they go down to [TS]

00:51:03   Louisville piper laurie comes along on [TS]

00:51:06   the trip will advise gets it throughout [TS]

00:51:09   yeah so I they go to the house of this [TS]

00:51:12   what probably be describes the most [TS]

00:51:16   papash man small all of Louisville he [TS]

00:51:21   just knows how to have a good time [TS]

00:51:23   he's played by marie hamilton who I [TS]

00:51:25   eagle-eyed viewers will recognize from [TS]

00:51:27   anatomy of a murder and jaws of a very [TS]

00:51:30   different character year which is very [TS]

00:51:32   different character I played billions [TS]

00:51:34   mr. films i wish this guy had been in [TS]

00:51:37   anatomy of a murder though i would [TS]

00:51:39   really spice maybe they would have you [TS]

00:51:41   had originally inappropriate but there [TS]

00:51:44   you go no more so than Duke Ellington [TS]

00:51:46   yeah so you just up from Detroit is fine [TS]

00:51:50   it's not Duke Ellington that's why I [TS]

00:51:52   sorry yes of course by all this time [TS]

00:51:55   George Scott has been decided the piper [TS]

00:51:58   laurie needs to go and has been [TS]

00:52:01   undermined her and add this party at [TS]

00:52:07   Finley's house he walks up to her and [TS]

00:52:09   whispers in jersey whispers in piper [TS]

00:52:12   laurie zere something apparently [TS]

00:52:14   terribly suggestive not unlike the word [TS]

00:52:17   panties from your team had she slaps him [TS]

00:52:22   and has an incident and is taken [TS]

00:52:25   upstairs and Eddie who is totally [TS]

00:52:27   focused on taking thinly in the the the [TS]

00:52:32   the pool game that they're about to play [TS]

00:52:35   to sort of leaves her be she sleeping it [TS]

00:52:38   off and bed under under someone's been [TS]

00:52:39   code or above someone sprinkle of [TS]

00:52:41   someone speakout um Fast Eddie [TS]

00:52:44   eventually beets family at his own game [TS]

00:52:46   he decides to walk back to the tattle [TS]

00:52:49   that they're all staying at at this [TS]

00:52:51   point uh Jesse Scott goes back to hotel [TS]

00:52:53   in a cab and begins the final [TS]

00:52:57   humiliation of Piper Laurie uh who [TS]

00:53:01   hey as we pointed out is both an [TS]

00:53:05   alcoholic and probably mentally ill and [TS]

00:53:07   who after having now of course with [TS]

00:53:11   George Scott reacts in the only way you [TS]

00:53:13   can react after having your course with [TS]

00:53:15   George Scott commit suicide [TS]

00:53:18   what it's all downhill from here yeah [TS]

00:53:21   Paul Newman returns to the hotel finds [TS]

00:53:24   that is true love is dad pretty much it [TS]

00:53:27   toward see Scott say-so attacks George [TS]

00:53:30   see scott and then that sets up the [TS]

00:53:32   final confrontation at the Ames pool [TS]

00:53:36   hall between Paul Newman and jackie [TS]

00:53:39   gleason as medicine fats in which paul [TS]

00:53:43   newman finally beat Minnesota Fats [TS]

00:53:45   refuses to pay a george he's got the [TS]

00:53:48   money that he owes him and his told that [TS]

00:53:51   he'll never get it a big pool game again [TS]

00:53:54   and walks away from the sport of [TS]

00:53:58   billiards until martin scorsese makes an [TS]

00:54:00   unsatisfying sequel 30 years end but [TS]

00:54:03   that's that's for another movie club [TS]

00:54:06   that I will not host I'm satisfying [TS]

00:54:09   sequel night that sounds like fun [TS]

00:54:11   that's the hustler in a nutshell and i [TS]

00:54:16   do want to point out that both the [TS]

00:54:20   opening sequence where he plays at [TS]

00:54:23   Minnesota Fats in the in the pool [TS]

00:54:26   contest and the last 20 minutes of the [TS]

00:54:28   movie where it's he comes back the [TS]

00:54:32   sadder but wiser a pool hustler to play [TS]

00:54:36   Minnesota Fats the ending is perhaps my [TS]

00:54:38   favorite ending of the movie ever [TS]

00:54:41   it's not my favorite movie ever mind you [TS]

00:54:44   but it's my the last 20 minutes are just [TS]

00:54:48   a masterpiece of cinema i would argue [TS]

00:54:51   get on bird I can't lose [TS]

00:54:53   yeah yeah i mean it's it's funny because [TS]

00:54:56   you always every time you hear about it [TS]

00:54:57   every time you see about it [TS]

00:54:59   all anyone talks about it [TS]

00:55:00   pool and for a long time well before I [TS]

00:55:03   saw it I thought the movie was just [TS]

00:55:05   wall-to-wall pool it was one you know [TS]

00:55:07   they don't know Greek tragedy in a [TS]

00:55:10   poolroom know and they don't have to [TS]

00:55:11   explain the rules of pool right around [TS]

00:55:14   alone billiards and I feel I 40 yet mr. [TS]

00:55:18   Felson house not rules and I figured the [TS]

00:55:21   entire thing would be set over the [TS]

00:55:23   course of that game or order that [TS]

00:55:26   Christmas is games and so the first time [TS]

00:55:28   i saw it was like oh this is a film with [TS]

00:55:30   real people and and and I mean I found [TS]

00:55:32   the the parts that weren't pool much [TS]

00:55:35   less interesting i wasn't quite as [TS]

00:55:37   interested in ready i wasn't interested [TS]

00:55:40   in I mean I was interested in him in the [TS]

00:55:42   dynamic with Burt but I wanted more pool [TS]

00:55:45   because those pool sequences are just so [TS]

00:55:48   beautifully choreographed and and paste [TS]

00:55:50   and shot and now defected well sound [TS]

00:55:54   effect it out the wazoo me let me [TS]

00:55:56   undermine my own choice for old movie [TS]

00:55:58   club that the middle our this movie is [TS]

00:56:01   yeah i can take your leave but it's [TS]

00:56:04   those ya book and scenes in the pool [TS]

00:56:06   halls that are just a magnificent and [TS]

00:56:09   that that that's why you you sit through [TS]

00:56:12   the the middle bit which kinda [TS]

00:56:14   admittedly lags a bit now but it but it [TS]

00:56:19   gives weight to the end [TS]

00:56:20   yeah well you know sure it's but but if [TS]

00:56:23   you never saw that bit and you just saw [TS]

00:56:25   this two segments you could walk away a [TS]

00:56:27   happy [TS]

00:56:27   oh that would be a good film to you [TS]

00:56:29   about the whole opening is it opening [TS]

00:56:32   thing with the first battle with fats [TS]

00:56:35   it's just there's so much in it it's so [TS]

00:56:37   amazing i wrote a bunch of things down [TS]

00:56:38   here [TS]

00:56:39   you know I I didn't leave you much you [TS]

00:56:41   left enough where he underestimates him [TS]

00:56:43   at the beginning he says you know I've [TS]

00:56:45   dreamed about it fat man i really love [TS]

00:56:47   that Jackie Gleason i think is great [TS]

00:56:49   it's just so successional so great so [TS]

00:56:52   great and this is only dramatic role of [TS]

00:56:55   note and that was my thought was uh we [TS]

00:56:58   wasted Jackie Gleason because I'm coming [TS]

00:57:01   up as as great as he was as a comedic [TS]

00:57:03   actor he is so good in this [TS]

00:57:07   well I think his dramatic role in Smokey [TS]

00:57:09   and the Bandit [TS]

00:57:11   does come in come up I I take your point [TS]

00:57:14   i take your ID well frankly doesn't do [TS]

00:57:16   much except look at things [TS]

00:57:18   Oh buddy Oh buddy it fills those looks [TS]

00:57:21   below much weight [TS]

00:57:23   oh my god no one else did I mean he's a [TS]

00:57:25   large guy I think he's much better [TS]

00:57:27   silent than when he talks in this movie [TS]

00:57:29   and the thing that's that's really [TS]

00:57:30   impressive is that he was himself in a [TS]

00:57:35   beautiful pool player he was a grand [TS]

00:57:37   player you know that they've very [TS]

00:57:39   carefully staged those so that you see [TS]

00:57:41   that it's him doing yes and he and that [TS]

00:57:43   he's in some of them [TS]

00:57:45   he's not even paying that much attention [TS]

00:57:46   it's like yeah I can do this without [TS]

00:57:48   looking but i do love the bid at the end [TS]

00:57:50   where he where he tells a man what's the [TS]

00:57:53   characters that whatever he tells Eddie [TS]

00:57:54   you better pay many and the look on his [TS]

00:57:56   face there is wonderful it's like yes [TS]

00:57:58   horrified that he has to say this but he [TS]

00:58:01   knows that he does and you know there's [TS]

00:58:04   an amazing amount of depth in that one [TS]

00:58:07   line they spend so much time setting up [TS]

00:58:09   showing newman and police in doing the [TS]

00:58:12   shots that by their second big game they [TS]

00:58:15   had don't have to show much of the game [TS]

00:58:17   at all [TS]

00:58:18   yeah because you buy it when you're just [TS]

00:58:20   watching Paul Newman's face fall as the [TS]

00:58:24   sounds of a ball going off screen and [TS]

00:58:27   apparently they only used um a couple of [TS]

00:58:30   stunt doubles to do the trick shots [TS]

00:58:32   yeah Willie Mosconi as seen a poster [TS]

00:58:34   behind Paul Newman an early scene i like [TS]

00:58:38   the clock to this is this is a little [TS]

00:58:41   bit brings to mind the you know they [TS]

00:58:42   don't they don't let you see the outside [TS]

00:58:43   of the time when you're in a casino it's [TS]

00:58:45   like that here they keep showing the [TS]

00:58:47   clock as it's like a marathon is like [TS]

00:58:49   the clock is advancing that you get the [TS]

00:58:51   fast clock spin they go to a thousand [TS]

00:58:53   game at four in the morning for four in [TS]

00:58:55   the morning the order whiskey and [TS]

00:58:56   bourbon and they've been playing for [TS]

00:58:58   hours now but at four in the morning [TS]

00:59:00   they say okay it's time to take off the [TS]

00:59:01   jacket and get serious with this which [TS]

00:59:03   is so great they take off the suit [TS]

00:59:05   jackets is what the whispering George [TS]

00:59:07   see Scott the morning the light streams [TS]

00:59:10   in its cut that sunshine out there [TS]

00:59:12   blocking out the world you know the game [TS]

00:59:14   is over when fat says it's over all of [TS]

00:59:18   that it's just it is [TS]

00:59:19   yeah it's spectacular i love it i like [TS]

00:59:22   the fact that the aims pool has to [TS]

00:59:24   promise [TS]

00:59:25   signs no gambling and no mass a shot at [TS]

00:59:28   or below ya know that every sign every [TS]

00:59:32   pool hall is ignored this movie pay [TS]

00:59:35   after every game and soho no gambling [TS]

00:59:38   and all i really like Paul Newman in [TS]

00:59:42   this movie I mean it's obvious because [TS]

00:59:43   he's the hero but his cocky smirk at the [TS]

00:59:46   beginning of the movie [TS]

00:59:47   yeah just looking at that says [TS]

00:59:50   everything about the character and you [TS]

00:59:52   can also kind of see why they would make [TS]

00:59:54   a sequel where Tom Cruise is essentially [TS]

00:59:56   playing the guy in this position is this [TS]

00:59:59   is [TS]

00:59:59   is [TS]

01:00:00   Tom Cruise of the day and the charisma [TS]

01:00:01   of him jump is just pouring out of the [TS]

01:00:05   screen on this one [TS]

01:00:06   a man I mean I i I've seen this on [TS]

01:00:09   television you know several times [TS]

01:00:11   oh you used to be played on television [TS]

01:00:13   all the time when I was a kid and I've [TS]

01:00:15   never seen in the theater but imagine [TS]

01:00:17   him full theater sized with that smile [TS]

01:00:21   and it must have been overwhelming my [TS]

01:00:25   favorite George see Scott moments in [TS]

01:00:27   this movie are during the first game [TS]

01:00:30   with gleason before he said anything he [TS]

01:00:32   just yells in sits there and watches and [TS]

01:00:35   he's so clean and neat [TS]

01:00:37   while everyone else is getting sweaty [TS]

01:00:39   and exhausted and you can just tell that [TS]

01:00:41   guy's above it or something [TS]

01:00:43   actually actually my favorite Jersey [TS]

01:00:44   Scott moments in this movie because I [TS]

01:00:46   think I as good as Newman is George [TS]

01:00:50   Scott walks away with this movie every [TS]

01:00:53   time he just diminishes piper laurie [TS]

01:00:56   like every time their on screen together [TS]

01:01:00   he finds a way to just twist the knife [TS]

01:01:02   on her up and he's um he's a monster and [TS]

01:01:07   I love the fact we never hear what it is [TS]

01:01:08   that he tells her [TS]

01:01:09   yeah at at at the scene at very [TS]

01:01:12   Hamilton's mansion yes but he there's [TS]

01:01:16   this line up but i just want to know I'm [TS]

01:01:18   not been on a cripple [TS]

01:01:20   i should point out the piper laurie [TS]

01:01:21   because of polio walks with a limp [TS]

01:01:23   throughout the movie and that is a line [TS]

01:01:27   that is directed so it's not an Eddie [TS]

01:01:30   because he had Stubbs broke its you [TS]

01:01:32   Piper Laurie because George see scott [TS]

01:01:34   just wants to emphasize how useless you [TS]

01:01:36   are the thing I like about that scene is [TS]

01:01:38   the fact that she has a comeback for [TS]

01:01:39   that and end at that part of the movie i [TS]

01:01:42   was really i wrote down that I'm digging [TS]

01:01:44   this emerging dynamic where she's [TS]

01:01:45   starting to sort of match wits with him [TS]

01:01:48   yep which unfortunately went away almost [TS]

01:01:50   immediately by would have really enjoyed [TS]

01:01:52   to see a little more of that before she [TS]

01:01:53   finally broke down but definitely a good [TS]

01:01:56   bit [TS]

01:01:57   yeah my other my other big George see [TS]

01:01:59   moments in this movie there's I think my [TS]

01:02:02   favorite thing in the movie is right [TS]

01:02:04   after George Scott and introduces Finley [TS]

01:02:08   22 Eddie there's just this look on his [TS]

01:02:10   face [TS]

01:02:11   of you know I've totally got you that is [TS]

01:02:14   is subtle but it's it's wonderful and [TS]

01:02:17   the other bit is uh oh there's a bit [TS]

01:02:20   more friendly points out the statue of [TS]

01:02:21   pan [TS]

01:02:22   yeah he suggests that George see scott [TS]

01:02:26   monument are not all for the odds and [TS]

01:02:29   Georgie Scott turns to see what is [TS]

01:02:31   presumably a massive set of go nadz and [TS]

01:02:33   just says possible to stare standing [TS]

01:02:38   yeah so my room mccormick as as a [TS]

01:02:41   Eddie's partner Charlie I looked at the [TS]

01:02:46   actor he died not too long after this he [TS]

01:02:48   died in 62 at the age of 54 I something [TS]

01:02:54   about this character as the the way he [TS]

01:02:56   performs this character he didn't he [TS]

01:02:59   died before he had a chance to be cast [TS]

01:03:02   as the doctor and star trek but that's [TS]

01:03:04   the that's how I read it is like oh my [TS]

01:03:06   god this is another he could have been [TS]

01:03:08   dr. McCoy whoever he's a he's got he's [TS]

01:03:10   got that kind of like likable crankiness [TS]

01:03:13   that I thought having never seen I think [TS]

01:03:15   this actor before I really liked him and [TS]

01:03:18   I was sad to see that that he passed [TS]

01:03:20   away fairly young soon after this [TS]

01:03:22   because he you know I like this voice [TS]

01:03:24   and that though the way it was coming [TS]

01:03:25   from this gruff voice and yet an affable [TS]

01:03:29   gentleman and I i I'm serious i'm at it [TS]

01:03:32   since they had three different actors as [TS]

01:03:33   the doctor on Star Trek before they got [TS]

01:03:35   one who stuck with a with the divorce [TS]

01:03:37   Kelly they are all of a type and it's [TS]

01:03:40   the same type this this kind of genial [TS]

01:03:43   cranky guy and I'm a lucky lush could [TS]

01:03:45   think that shit yeah yeah yeah like so I [TS]

01:03:48   like that character a lot and that [TS]

01:03:49   performance and ya know he's ease [TS]

01:03:52   he's a very underrated in this picture [TS]

01:03:54   because he's done by the second act [TS]

01:03:57   yeah yeah yeah i was pleased to see [TS]

01:04:00   William dwell the calendar Turner from [TS]

01:04:02   1776 oh yeah no yeah well start a lot of [TS]

01:04:08   things as one of the pool hustlers who [TS]

01:04:10   needs Eddie and lethal and one of the [TS]

01:04:14   other bartenders was Jake LaMotta yes [TS]

01:04:16   yes I was going to school [TS]

01:04:18   there's there's your casting casting [TS]

01:04:20   this one is the bartender Jake LaMotta [TS]

01:04:22   yeah but they have him only say one word [TS]

01:04:23   which works much better it was a smart [TS]

01:04:26   choice that's how you do some casting [TS]

01:04:28   chain here and learn this syllable [TS]

01:04:30   thanks Mac just Welch was originally [TS]

01:04:33   going to play them on the movie went [TS]

01:04:36   five hours long [TS]

01:04:38   yeah I've often found queer the way you [TS]

01:04:42   pull the center is to get to get briefly [TS]

01:04:45   back to his to his partner i think the [TS]

01:04:47   way that that that character exits is [TS]

01:04:49   really really interesting i like that [TS]

01:04:51   seen a lot where it seems as though he's [TS]

01:04:54   grown to really care about the Fast [TS]

01:04:56   Eddie character and and Eddie just can't [TS]

01:04:58   you can't accept that it as even a [TS]

01:05:00   possibility [TS]

01:05:01   yeah and it's never made clear which [TS]

01:05:02   which side is actually right but it's [TS]

01:05:06   it's a really nice really poignant bit [TS]

01:05:08   and I i think in general you know that [TS]

01:05:11   the part that you call the slow part [TS]

01:05:12   between from the couple of pool scenes [TS]

01:05:15   at either end which is basically the [TS]

01:05:16   whole movie [TS]

01:05:17   yeah is I think really really poignant [TS]

01:05:22   human drama that I have difficulty [TS]

01:05:25   watching because i don't like to spend [TS]

01:05:27   so much time with broken depressing [TS]

01:05:32   people [TS]

01:05:33   yeah you get enough of that in real life [TS]

01:05:35   except yeah I'm this podcast below you [TS]

01:05:39   don't look like a college girls do [TS]

01:05:41   oh do you want me to do just step out in [TS]

01:05:43   the alley Jason stupid little sins are [TS]

01:05:46   about 25 minutes of peace so that's [TS]

01:05:48   already like an hour is an hour with a [TS]

01:05:50   discrete-time which is what one-tenth of [TS]

01:05:52   the film's runtime no no I lost track [TS]

01:05:54   somewhere along the line burned you're [TS]

01:05:57   right that the middle the middle bit to [TS]

01:05:58   drag a little bit and and I have a note [TS]

01:06:00   that says as soon as George see turns up [TS]

01:06:02   that it goes from slow and kind of [TS]

01:06:04   dragged into a fight home elegance [TS]

01:06:05   Georgie shot showing up a bar so all [TS]

01:06:08   that scene with newman and Scott in the [TS]

01:06:10   bar fantastic when he just gets his cast [TS]

01:06:13   off [TS]

01:06:13   yeah spectacular scene but the stuff [TS]

01:06:16   that's going to stick with me i think is [TS]

01:06:17   the is the awful love that the awful [TS]

01:06:20   things done by awful people to each [TS]

01:06:22   other but at the same time I didn't get [TS]

01:06:24   say i really enjoyed watching it [TS]

01:06:26   honestly it that the middle the middle [TS]

01:06:29   third is not enjoyable [TS]

01:06:31   but it's the middle third sets up the [TS]

01:06:34   final sequence which is your just [TS]

01:06:37   outstanding cinema enjoy the trip mixer [TS]

01:06:40   i like that they take a lovely picnic [TS]

01:06:42   with the guy with the broken thumbs at [TS]

01:06:43   me off that made me chuckle it's funny [TS]

01:06:45   you mention that that picnic seen Jason [TS]

01:06:48   because that whole sequence briefly [TS]

01:06:49   after his thumbs are broken where they [TS]

01:06:51   seem to be getting along really well and [TS]

01:06:53   yeah he's really happy the reason she's [TS]

01:06:55   really happy is because he can't get [TS]

01:06:57   away anymore [TS]

01:06:58   that's right thumbs are busted he's not [TS]

01:07:00   going to take off and play pool and as [TS]

01:07:02   soon as his thumbs are back to normal [TS]

01:07:04   that's all over and it's just it's such [TS]

01:07:05   a sad dynamics that our relationship and [TS]

01:07:09   I think it's the crowning moment of that [TS]

01:07:11   I think is that in the the mansion in [TS]

01:07:15   louisville and family's mansion where [TS]

01:07:16   Sarah's had a bit much to drink and [TS]

01:07:20   there's a scene that just seems to last [TS]

01:07:22   forever where she she makes this slow [TS]

01:07:25   drunken limping because of course she's [TS]

01:07:28   she's got a funky gate from polio this [TS]

01:07:32   drunken traverse down the staircase and [TS]

01:07:35   through this crowd of other people who [TS]

01:07:37   seem to be happy and normal and enjoying [TS]

01:07:39   themselves and it is just so [TS]

01:07:40   excruciating to watch and of course the [TS]

01:07:44   cherry on top of that on that Sunday is [TS]

01:07:47   as she approaches George see scott and [TS]

01:07:49   he whispers the coup de Gras into her [TS]

01:07:51   ear and that's sort of it for her but [TS]

01:07:54   it's it's a wonderful scene and [TS]

01:07:56   depressing and sad and so well shot [TS]

01:08:00   oh yeah it's really well done [TS]

01:08:03   yeah well it's it's there's a [TS]

01:08:04   parallelism there i mean he or she [TS]

01:08:07   becomes a better person when he's hurt [TS]

01:08:09   he becomes a better person when she's [TS]

01:08:12   dead now he redeems himself only only [TS]

01:08:18   after her suicide [TS]

01:08:19   behind every great man is a dead woman [TS]

01:08:21   he says I character now picked it up in [TS]

01:08:23   a hotel room in Louisville that's that's [TS]

01:08:24   when he gets gets it [TS]

01:08:26   yeah and-and-and Piper worries character [TS]

01:08:28   here is maybe a little under written in [TS]

01:08:31   the in the middle sections [TS]

01:08:33   and which is unfortunate i think [TS]

01:08:35   sometimes she's doing things maybe too [TS]

01:08:39   quickly the they are that they're the [TS]

01:08:43   kind of rushing through her character [TS]

01:08:44   development maybe a little fast makes me [TS]

01:08:47   seem slow but I you know she's jumping [TS]

01:08:49   something you know suddenly she's not an [TS]

01:08:51   alcoholic anymore and in and everybody's [TS]

01:08:53   happy and but the first two scenes up [TS]

01:08:58   between Fast Eddie and Sarah first in [TS]

01:09:01   the diner in the bus station and then in [TS]

01:09:04   the bar she is she is fantastic and [TS]

01:09:08   those seems she's great she is great [TS]

01:09:10   no it's it's a very good performance [TS]

01:09:11   it's it's it's well written for her and [TS]

01:09:14   she just nails it especially in the bar [TS]

01:09:17   especially in the bar you want to go out [TS]

01:09:20   in the alley [TS]

01:09:21   god I just cinch so gross at everything [TS]

01:09:24   where she's just kind of laying out [TS]

01:09:25   herself as a drunk and this is what she [TS]

01:09:29   doesn't know why was she in the bus [TS]

01:09:31   station well because the bars don't open [TS]

01:09:33   until eight am and that's why i was [TS]

01:09:35   there i fell into that hole pick up [TS]

01:09:39   where he's trying to trying to get her [TS]

01:09:40   to you know head off with him is just [TS]

01:09:42   it's so gross [TS]

01:09:43   yeah and it's it it gives you a real [TS]

01:09:46   feel for how nasty these characters [TS]

01:09:48   really are my only two remain notes are [TS]

01:09:52   really one remaining note is Robert [TS]

01:09:55   rawson the director of this movie [TS]

01:09:57   the only other movie that he really made [TS]

01:10:00   that was worth a damn was all the king's [TS]

01:10:03   men [TS]

01:10:03   yeah well which is a great movie that [TS]

01:10:06   might be a future episode right now I [TS]

01:10:09   should hope so but this is just very [TS]

01:10:15   well put together in terms of just [TS]

01:10:17   soundtrack in terms of actors in terms [TS]

01:10:20   of of pacing even with the middle third [TS]

01:10:25   of the movie that kind of lags as we've [TS]

01:10:27   said but maybe maybe it's intentional [TS]

01:10:30   maybe it is supposed to be a little bit [TS]

01:10:32   of a leg to show that that is kind of [TS]

01:10:35   how Eddie feels right [TS]

01:10:36   he's only alive when he's in this very [TS]

01:10:39   compressed time period playing this [TS]

01:10:41   really high stakes game and the rest of [TS]

01:10:44   everything is just sort of [TS]

01:10:45   and my my only other note is please your [TS]

01:10:48   God anyone listening to the sound of my [TS]

01:10:50   voice don't watch the color buddy it [TS]

01:10:55   like a movie no and the eric clapton [TS]

01:10:59   song is good I liked the air that song [TS]

01:11:01   is good [TS]

01:11:02   that's the only thing good about this [TS]

01:11:03   movie it's not it's OS it's terrible [TS]

01:11:07   it's terrible thing it's martin scorsese [TS]

01:11:11   doing a movie show that he can make a [TS]

01:11:13   movie that's a commercial movie and it's [TS]

01:11:16   paul newman making a movie the show [TS]

01:11:18   hey maybe you should give me an Oscar [TS]

01:11:20   not gonna I'm gonna die one of these [TS]

01:11:22   days and you haven't given me one yet [TS]

01:11:24   and work towards make them Sir has tom [TS]

01:11:27   cruise's a puppy who demands approval I [TS]

01:11:30   don't think you can blame Tom Cruise for [TS]

01:11:31   it it's a perfect role for Tom Cruise oh [TS]

01:11:33   sure sure but it's not a good movie [TS]

01:11:38   anything more to say about the hustler [TS]

01:11:41   in in the first pool scene you know of [TS]

01:11:44   course Jackie Gleason's entrance of [TS]

01:11:46   spectacular at the end of it when a Paul [TS]

01:11:52   Newman falls down at the end of the at [TS]

01:11:55   the end of the pool table [TS]

01:11:56   Charlie goes over to him and everybody [TS]

01:12:00   else just kind of walks out cut almost [TS]

01:12:03   like they're stepping over the top of [TS]

01:12:05   them nobody actually steps over the top [TS]

01:12:07   of him but in my mind it's like they're [TS]

01:12:09   stepping over the top of them as they [TS]

01:12:11   walk out i'm not sure exactly how they [TS]

01:12:14   manage to do that but that's how it [TS]

01:12:15   that's always how it feels to that's [TS]

01:12:17   very good [TS]

01:12:18   it's fine in in a pit in the picnic [TS]

01:12:21   scene we have which I love and it's one [TS]

01:12:25   of the few scenes in the middle of the [TS]

01:12:27   movie that that I really like you have a [TS]

01:12:30   fast eddie explaining the concept of [TS]

01:12:32   flow possibly before anyone knew anyone [TS]

01:12:36   knew what flow was talking about and [TS]

01:12:39   he's got that great line it's like I've [TS]

01:12:40   got oil in my arm I'll see the way [TS]

01:12:43   trailer on Alice that wasn't alex is [TS]

01:12:46   running the show is my grits [TS]

01:12:48   alright and then in the final scene i [TS]

01:12:53   always feel [TS]

01:12:55   that fats is on fatty side [TS]

01:12:58   oh yeah well yes not just at the end not [TS]

01:13:01   just at the end where he's sort of [TS]

01:13:03   telling you know you better pay a melody [TS]

01:13:05   or earlier on when you know past Eddie [TS]

01:13:10   is talking for its in the first game and [TS]

01:13:13   it and everything is on is on the line [TS]

01:13:15   because he only has three thousand [TS]

01:13:17   dollars and this is a game for three [TS]

01:13:18   thousand dollars and he's talking to [TS]

01:13:21   Bert about it and fast and loose and get [TS]

01:13:25   on me bird I can't lose as he's going [TS]

01:13:28   along and talking and probably talking [TS]

01:13:30   too much and probably getting himself in [TS]

01:13:33   trouble with Bert who can have more than [TS]

01:13:37   his thumbs broken uh fat says shoot pool [TS]

01:13:42   Fast Eddie and Eddie seems to think that [TS]

01:13:46   fats is telling him I moving along but [TS]

01:13:50   let's let's keep going [TS]

01:13:52   it's did you know get back to get back [TS]

01:13:53   to business here [TS]

01:13:55   that's why he says you know i'm shooting [TS]

01:13:57   pool fats when I miss you can shoot that [TS]

01:14:00   is my favorite exchange in this movie [TS]

01:14:02   but what fast is really saying is you're [TS]

01:14:05   getting yourself in your mouth is [TS]

01:14:06   getting yourself in trouble get [TS]

01:14:07   concentrate on the pool I don't want you [TS]

01:14:10   to get hurt by this guy and then of [TS]

01:14:12   course at the end you know you better [TS]

01:14:13   pay them all that and then you know fat [TS]

01:14:15   man you shoot a great game of pool so do [TS]

01:14:17   you fast eddie have fans never has [TS]

01:14:19   anything against Eddie Eddie came and [TS]

01:14:22   said play pool and fats a pool player [TS]

01:14:24   alright I'm going to beat you for 48 [TS]

01:14:26   hours I feel like he's on the same side [TS]

01:14:28   after the first pool game before even [TS]

01:14:31   comes back in the pool hall I think he's [TS]

01:14:33   already got fats on his side because [TS]

01:14:35   he's earned his respect [TS]

01:14:36   up to a point before you know got a [TS]

01:14:38   little too crazy fell over on the floor [TS]

01:14:41   los talas me that's has to know how good [TS]

01:14:43   is he doesn't end and he has to be [TS]

01:14:45   intrigued by the fact that you know he [TS]

01:14:46   did this is what is it that I think that [TS]

01:14:50   George Scott character tells them is you [TS]

01:14:52   really got your hooks and yeah you had [TS]

01:14:54   him hooked and I think he's still hooked [TS]

01:14:55   at the time when when he comes back into [TS]

01:14:57   the pool on that I think it has earned a [TS]

01:14:59   measure of respect and I think that that [TS]

01:15:02   last scene is one of my favorite final [TS]

01:15:04   scenes and just the way it exits and [TS]

01:15:07   freezes [TS]

01:15:08   guys you know just started putting on [TS]

01:15:10   your coat even cleaning anything we get [TS]

01:15:14   the impression that for all his his [TS]

01:15:16   bluster George see Scott feels like he's [TS]

01:15:18   just escaped from being murdered [TS]

01:15:20   yeah it looks like he he looks like he's [TS]

01:15:23   happy he got out of that exchange [TS]

01:15:24   without being killed [TS]

01:15:26   well he's negotiating even up before [TS]

01:15:28   that you know he's got the 75 25 and [TS]

01:15:30   then he's you know he's he's moving his [TS]

01:15:32   percentage down right yeah he totally [TS]

01:15:35   got the Rock I mean he knows he knows he [TS]

01:15:37   pushed it too far and Sarah's dead and [TS]

01:15:39   he probably deserves to be killed [TS]

01:15:42   yeah in fact it's a lot of gall on his [TS]

01:15:44   part to scream you all me money in the [TS]

01:15:46   first Wahby money [TS]

01:15:48   look if you have a chance to shout that [TS]

01:15:50   you shout that's just gonna break your [TS]

01:15:55   thumbs they could break your are yes and [TS]

01:15:57   you know when when he says you know [TS]

01:15:59   they'll put the pieces back together [TS]

01:16:00   i'll come back and I will kill you that [TS]

01:16:02   he means it and it's it's just a whole [TS]

01:16:04   that whole the whole exchange there is [TS]

01:16:06   wonderful [TS]

01:16:07   the bit where he tells him you'll never [TS]

01:16:09   set foot in a big pool hall again and in [TS]

01:16:11   Paul Newman looks around you know [TS]

01:16:13   wistfully like well I'm never going to [TS]

01:16:15   see you again that's beautiful [TS]

01:16:16   yeah everything about that endings as I [TS]

01:16:18   said last 20 minutes of this movie I'll [TS]

01:16:20   stack up against any 20 minutes of any [TS]

01:16:23   movie [TS]

01:16:24   ya ever made it's just that problematic [TS]

01:16:27   middle bit [TS]

01:16:28   yeah well sure but without without that [TS]

01:16:30   you wouldn't did the the ending wouldn't [TS]

01:16:32   make much sense [TS]

01:16:33   shuffle it makes a hell of a lot of [TS]

01:16:36   sense safe and without that little bit [TS]

01:16:38   when you need something suitably awful [TS]

01:16:39   to happen well sure it is it would have [TS]

01:16:42   Redemption [TS]

01:16:43   why is he having a rematch already you [TS]

01:16:45   just played this guy this is tom [TS]

01:16:48   where'd you get that 3000th our church [TS]

01:16:50   scott seems to dislike him now [TS]

01:16:52   what happened to that nice girl at the [TS]

01:16:54   bus now is there a Redemption I don't [TS]

01:16:56   feel like he's ever really redeemed I'm [TS]

01:16:58   you know about at all not at all [TS]

01:17:01   he's clearly capable of beating fats now [TS]

01:17:03   that I wouldn't call that Redemption [TS]

01:17:05   well he keeps he keeps himself you know [TS]

01:17:08   he doesn't [TS]

01:17:09   he doesn't go off the rails is he has he [TS]

01:17:13   has as he says he has character now he [TS]

01:17:16   got in the hotel room in a sense he's [TS]

01:17:18   finally acquiescing to sarah's request [TS]

01:17:22   of him which is you know don't be a [TS]

01:17:23   cripple and well I think he just takes [TS]

01:17:26   the center the line if you can't play [TS]

01:17:28   tops of the pool for 48 straight hours [TS]

01:17:30   you're not worth anything literally well [TS]

01:17:33   now he can now he's worth something [TS]

01:17:36   no longer needs to play fool to prove [TS]

01:17:38   himself versus Scott these were good [TS]

01:17:42   Phil also long [TS]

01:17:44   yeah yeah I usually have more notes but [TS]

01:17:46   I if I took notes throughout all of [TS]

01:17:48   these movies if they would have been a [TS]

01:17:49   five hour per movie they say movies [TS]

01:17:51   today along with their there have been [TS]

01:17:53   long movies for a long time and anatomy [TS]

01:17:56   of the murder man anatomy of a murder is [TS]

01:17:59   one of those long movies it's a long [TS]

01:18:00   movie just as just sort of in general [TS]

01:18:03   though I mean I think of of older movies [TS]

01:18:05   is being shorter and usually they are [TS]

01:18:06   but it seems like for old movie club we [TS]

01:18:08   tend to pick the long ones not sure why [TS]

01:18:10   that is just like long movies Phil I do [TS]

01:18:14   alright I think we're I think we've come [TS]

01:18:16   to the end of another old movie club [TS]

01:18:18   totally had that really have we nailed [TS]
