00:00:10   the incomparable number 263 September [TS]

00:00:17   welcome back everybody to the [TS]

00:00:20   incomparable i'm your host Jason style [TS]

00:00:21   we're here to talk about summer TV and [TS]

00:00:23   in particular I feel like the summer [TS]

00:00:24   2015 is gonna be remembered for two very [TS]

00:00:27   interesting TV series that would that [TS]

00:00:30   ran entirely the summer their first [TS]

00:00:32   season's intriguing stuff on AMC in the [TS]

00:00:36   United States humans and the USA in the [TS]

00:00:39   United States mr. robot to very [TS]

00:00:42   interesting shows as was pointed out on [TS]

00:00:44   Twitter to us today humans very [TS]

00:00:46   interesting story about robots mr. robot [TS]

00:00:48   very interesting story about humans [TS]

00:00:51   go figure it's like they planned it [TS]

00:00:53   joining me to talk about these TV series [TS]

00:00:55   are three very interesting people [TS]

00:00:57   David laura is out there hello hello it [TS]

00:01:01   reminds me why do we park on a driveway [TS]

00:01:02   and drive on a parkway John Syracuse is [TS]

00:01:05   also here I'm ready to talk about mr. [TS]

00:01:07   robot and it's crazy episode titles [TS]

00:01:09   yes oh yes we'll get there we'll get [TS]

00:01:12   there and Merlin man is here [TS]

00:01:14   I'm one hello friend hello friend that [TS]

00:01:17   was laying we start with a mr. robot I'm [TS]

00:01:21   gonna fire off the spoiler horn very [TS]

00:01:22   soon because it needs to be done but you [TS]

00:01:25   can consult the show notes if you want [TS]

00:01:26   to find out how far ahead you need skip [TS]

00:01:28   if you want to hear us talk about humans [TS]

00:01:30   but not get spoiler spoiled about mr. [TS]

00:01:32   robot but before we get started with [TS]

00:01:33   with the spoilers at least worth saying [TS]

00:01:36   mr. robot as a runs on USA USA you may [TS]

00:01:40   know it as what famous for what they are [TS]

00:01:42   called the blue sky shows friendly like [TS]

00:01:45   the monk you know monk he's a friendly [TS]

00:01:47   guy your characters are well characters [TS]

00:01:49   are welcome everybody has a good time [TS]

00:01:51   mysteries are solved nobody gets to hurt [TS]

00:01:54   this is a nice comfort food of [TS]

00:01:57   television and recently USA decided that [TS]

00:02:00   the blue skies a approach wasn't good [TS]

00:02:02   enough for them wasn't wasn't growing [TS]

00:02:05   their audience and they wanted a little [TS]

00:02:07   more edge so they invented something [TS]

00:02:09   stupid called the silver linings TV [TS]

00:02:12   which is not a thing that exists and is [TS]

00:02:13   dumb but what it did was they they try [TS]

00:02:16   to get some shows with more of an edge [TS]

00:02:17   and mr. robot was one of those and it is [TS]

00:02:21   created by a guy named sam ass male who [TS]

00:02:23   had done some a written some [TS]

00:02:26   well thought of movie screen plays one [TS]

00:02:28   of which was produced one of which was [TS]

00:02:29   famously I guess not produced but loved [TS]

00:02:32   by people who read it and yet Hollywood [TS]

00:02:34   never made and and he got he got the [TS]

00:02:38   power to run the this show for USA and [TS]

00:02:41   and make mr. robot and the result is a [TS]

00:02:44   very I'd say peculiar skewed kind of TV [TS]

00:02:49   show not like what I expected to see I [TS]

00:02:51   honestly watched most 22 gauge how bad [TS]

00:02:55   it's technology was like this like how [TS]

00:02:58   bad the tech was in it and in the end my [TS]

00:03:01   verdict on that was that it was as good [TS]

00:03:02   as one can probably expect from a actual [TS]

00:03:05   dramatic TV show about computer things [TS]

00:03:07   but what was unexpected for me anyway [TS]

00:03:11   was how great it was quite frankly how [TS]

00:03:14   incredibly closely entertaining and [TS]

00:03:16   interesting it was so what do you all [TS]

00:03:18   think of mr. robot my thought was [TS]

00:03:20   terrific [TS]

00:03:21   I wasn't exactly sure what to expect the [TS]

00:03:23   the title alone really in grossly [TS]

00:03:27   lowered my exit the documentary about [TS]

00:03:29   sticks well you and your pal team given [TS]

00:03:31   like the joke about you know CSI cyber [TS]

00:03:33   and what's the other one was the other [TS]

00:03:34   one scorpion scorpion [TS]

00:03:36   yeah where you know I Internet let's run [TS]

00:03:38   an ethernet cable to the plane as it [TS]

00:03:39   passes overhead door so I can't ssh my [TS]

00:03:43   way out of a wet paper bag but i but i [TS]

00:03:45   dunno terrible technology when I see it [TS]

00:03:47   and that can be really frustrating and [TS]

00:03:49   you know it i guess we'll just see the [TS]

00:03:51   thing often say what we want it's [TS]

00:03:52   something I end up liking to use [TS]

00:03:54   Syracuse's term you know high degree of [TS]

00:03:56   difficulty lot of ways this could have [TS]

00:03:58   gone horribly horribly wrong just I [TS]

00:04:00   think its conception see I want another [TS]

00:04:03   concern you know gosh this seems so [TS]

00:04:04   timely everybody's worried about the [TS]

00:04:06   hacking I'm gonna get hacked in the [TS]

00:04:07   cloud you know and you know just felt [TS]

00:04:09   like oh this could be just another kind [TS]

00:04:10   of throw away but what the heck it looks [TS]

00:04:12   interesting [TS]

00:04:12   it's got the guy from that night at the [TS]

00:04:14   museum movie let's give it a throw and [TS]

00:04:16   and I was the I was utterly enchanted by [TS]

00:04:20   the pilot i thought was incredibly [TS]

00:04:21   absorbing iie I thought the pacing was [TS]

00:04:24   great I thought again something you and [TS]

00:04:26   Tim talked about on your other program [TS]

00:04:28   is that the show really hangs on the guy [TS]

00:04:31   plays Elliot who I just thought was [TS]

00:04:34   terrific but the rest of the cast is is [TS]

00:04:36   great and [TS]

00:04:37   I don't know I found it incredibly [TS]

00:04:38   absorbing in ways that I didn't even [TS]

00:04:40   expect and it knew I guess I guess I [TS]

00:04:44   feel like it really knew which buttons [TS]

00:04:46   to hit at which times to keep the [TS]

00:04:48   tension high and keeping interest high [TS]

00:04:49   and knowing when to introduce what are [TS]

00:04:51   ultimately very complex human and mental [TS]

00:04:53   and emotional issues even in the midst [TS]

00:04:56   of all this you know people typing in a [TS]

00:04:57   terminal I I thought it was I thought it [TS]

00:05:00   was pretty terrific make the only [TS]

00:05:02   spoiler-free things i can say about it [TS]

00:05:04   are to the people listening and that to [TS]

00:05:07   the point of what Marlon made before [TS]

00:05:09   when i heard people talking about mr. [TS]

00:05:12   robot for the longest time probably days [TS]

00:05:14   or weeks i thought it was a comedy and I [TS]

00:05:15   was not interested that's like another [TS]

00:05:18   Silicon Valley you know mr. robot is not [TS]

00:05:21   a good title for the show I if you have [TS]

00:05:23   don't know what we're talking about and [TS]

00:05:25   I'm staying away the show because of the [TS]

00:05:27   title ignore the title it's a it's a [TS]

00:05:29   good show and its really interesting and [TS]

00:05:30   it is not a comedy at all mother has [TS]

00:05:33   some amusing parts in it and yeah I mean [TS]

00:05:36   well I i think what we want i want to [TS]

00:05:38   talk more about what the show looks like [TS]

00:05:40   and how it shot and how it's written but [TS]

00:05:42   it's pretty much impossible to do that [TS]

00:05:43   without revealing stuff I I guess on the [TS]

00:05:46   internet is also working tomorrow and [TS]

00:05:48   said i love the lead actor and yes Robin [TS]

00:05:51   now what he is [TS]

00:05:52   see looks weird he is weird he acts [TS]

00:05:55   weird I've never seen him in anything [TS]

00:05:56   else so I don't know if he's a great [TS]

00:05:58   actor of this is just what the actors [TS]

00:05:59   like and all the supporting cast the [TS]

00:06:01   people i have seen before I really like [TS]

00:06:04   and the people who are new just fit so [TS]

00:06:05   perfectly it's it's the magic of a show [TS]

00:06:08   that doesn't have big names associated [TS]

00:06:11   with it but has good performances all [TS]

00:06:13   around as well written [TS]

00:06:15   so you know you've heard people talking [TS]

00:06:17   mr. or maybe it's a little bit overhyped [TS]

00:06:18   it's quirky and it's weird i would say [TS]

00:06:21   it's it's my for a variety of reasons [TS]

00:06:23   that are getting a little bit it's for [TS]

00:06:25   this year it's my what girls was to me [TS]

00:06:28   like last year and the year before the [TS]

00:06:30   strange quirky show with the though so [TS]

00:06:32   so title you hear people talking about [TS]

00:06:34   if you're not sure if it's for you [TS]

00:06:36   you like girls check this out to I'd say [TS]

00:06:38   I was gonna like it to orphan black from [TS]

00:06:40   a couple years ago was like I don't know [TS]

00:06:42   and i'm not sure if they can pull this [TS]

00:06:44   off and I got kind of got pulled in and [TS]

00:06:46   further and further and by the end of it [TS]

00:06:48   I was like oh no this is great and [TS]

00:06:50   that was sort of the the my expectations [TS]

00:06:53   were particularly high and I was a [TS]

00:06:54   little skeptical and then it kind of [TS]

00:06:56   kind of stuck me in [TS]

00:06:57   yeah it's it's funny to think about you [TS]

00:06:59   know I don't the words treatment or just [TS]

00:07:02   even the script but I IE I can't even [TS]

00:07:04   imagine how you would describe let's say [TS]

00:07:07   you're doing the casting and you're [TS]

00:07:08   talking to the casting people about what [TS]

00:07:09   you want this actor to accomplish you [TS]

00:07:12   know if you were to describe the sorts [TS]

00:07:14   of things that this sector does so well [TS]

00:07:16   as Elliot it would it would sound like a [TS]

00:07:19   like a caricature I mean it would sound [TS]

00:07:21   almost like a like a like a baggy pants [TS]

00:07:23   kind of vaudeville idea of like some [TS]

00:07:25   kind of like spitting one of those [TS]

00:07:26   autistic programmers but he brings so [TS]

00:07:28   much nuance to it and again i might be [TS]

00:07:30   cooking this from Tim Goodman but the [TS]

00:07:32   way that he can look both dead I'd and [TS]

00:07:34   bug-eyed at the same time is it is a [TS]

00:07:36   terrific big bug eyes but he's got but [TS]

00:07:39   you we use met Elliot and we've already [TS]

00:07:41   know Elliot some of us are le and we've [TS]

00:07:43   been around Elliot and we know that it's [TS]

00:07:45   not really just as simple as though it's [TS]

00:07:47   that crazy guy who fixes the computer [TS]

00:07:48   like he brings he brings a lot to it [TS]

00:07:51   it's when you realize the you talking to [TS]

00:07:53   somebody and and the lack of a fact that [TS]

00:07:56   you sense is potentially either out an [TS]

00:08:00   actual lack of a fact they don't you [TS]

00:08:02   know they're not reacting to you or it [TS]

00:08:04   is completely the deer-in-the-headlights [TS]

00:08:05   and I and and I i have that experience [TS]

00:08:08   sometimes and and that's what I always [TS]

00:08:10   got from Elliott is like what's back [TS]

00:08:12   there what's behind them and one of the [TS]

00:08:14   brilliant things I think about the pilot [TS]

00:08:15   episode is that it plays I feel like it [TS]

00:08:19   plays us this whole show plays us and we [TS]

00:08:21   will talk to that after we fire off the [TS]

00:08:22   spoiler but the pilot plays us perfectly [TS]

00:08:25   in X and expects us to make every single [TS]

00:08:29   assumption about what you just said it's [TS]

00:08:31   the kind of us autistic you somewhere on [TS]

00:08:34   the spectrum computernerd programmer guy [TS]

00:08:36   ux you know those cliches are are [TS]

00:08:39   programmed into us and then it just kind [TS]

00:08:42   not small down as it goes and you [TS]

00:08:45   realize what you're seeing is a much [TS]

00:08:47   more interesting performance and much [TS]

00:08:49   more interesting character than the one [TS]

00:08:51   that you might have expected from you [TS]

00:08:53   know some basic cable show about that [TS]

00:08:55   supposed to be about hackers right on on [TS]

00:08:57   USA USA [TS]

00:08:58   yes yeah there's nothing else a if [TS]

00:09:00   you're scared away because you think the [TS]

00:09:02   TV show about hackers [TS]

00:09:03   it kind of is a TV show and hackers but [TS]

00:09:05   do not be scared money because it it [TS]

00:09:07   does not just not it [TS]

00:09:10   the traps it falls into are the common [TS]

00:09:12   ones but it's just not important like I [TS]

00:09:13   think whatever right we did about the [TS]

00:09:15   show is it it rises above all this [TS]

00:09:17   technical problems because the [TS]

00:09:18   technology is not the point that the [TS]

00:09:20   people who made the show did not get [TS]

00:09:22   bogged down in like we have to make this [TS]

00:09:24   realistic in its it's a human drama [TS]

00:09:26   happens the setting happens to be [TS]

00:09:28   hacking don't worry about even if your [TS]

00:09:29   computer and I think everything else is [TS]

00:09:32   good about the show will make you ignore [TS]

00:09:33   the admittedly laughable times they [TS]

00:09:36   tight touch on technology that's fine [TS]

00:09:38   it's not the point of the show was [TS]

00:09:39   before we blow the horn here I feel like [TS]

00:09:42   the people who i want to get your read [TS]

00:09:44   on this John because if there's anybody [TS]

00:09:45   who can who can address this for me it's [TS]

00:09:47   you I felt like this was about as good [TS]

00:09:50   in terms of like you know you're [TS]

00:09:53   generally right you're generally on the [TS]

00:09:55   right track about like the tech that [TS]

00:09:56   they did show i didn't have those [TS]

00:09:59   moments of initially like no it's not [TS]

00:10:01   like that at all it was more like those [TS]

00:10:03   are some of those in the first episode [TS]

00:10:04   yeah but some of that like be that like [TS]

00:10:06   the even just like the terminal commands [TS]

00:10:08   instead I felt like this is in the [TS]

00:10:09   ballpark and I realized that the low bar [TS]

00:10:11   because of scorpion and CSI cyber [TS]

00:10:13   but I was like whoever did this like [TS]

00:10:15   they they knew what they were doing and [TS]

00:10:18   then the the writer and producer were [TS]

00:10:21   like yeah we're gonna do what we need to [TS]

00:10:23   do for drama and and if you really saw [TS]

00:10:25   hacking seen like the scene in the first [TS]

00:10:27   episode that was not you know there was [TS]

00:10:30   more realistic it would just be boring [TS]

00:10:32   so I feel like yeah I'm gonna give him a [TS]

00:10:34   pass for that but I felt like underneath [TS]

00:10:36   it all it was smart [TS]

00:10:37   that was not Ludacris with its its [TS]

00:10:40   attack in broad strokes of things that [TS]

00:10:42   happen are all reasonable implausible [TS]

00:10:44   and drive the plot forward but they're [TS]

00:10:45   not really the point in the minor [TS]

00:10:47   details they get lots of stuff wrong but [TS]

00:10:49   it doesn't matter you know yes you just [TS]

00:10:50   forgive that because it's they don't [TS]

00:10:52   dwell on it that there's not it's not [TS]

00:10:53   the point of the show at all so don't be [TS]

00:10:55   scared away if even if you're someone [TS]

00:10:57   who's into computers did I don't be [TS]

00:10:59   scared away by the silly episode titles [TS]

00:11:01   that are supposed to look like all names [TS]

00:11:02   and ridiculous i like that i mean it's [TS]

00:11:04   like literally the episode titles are [TS]

00:11:06   things you'd find on bittorrent also be [TS]

00:11:08   cool 8 respond to that the Micronauts on [TS]

00:11:12   there I'm just saying [TS]

00:11:14   yeah um I mean where where you know [TS]

00:11:16   probably pretty certain to upset or [TS]

00:11:19   offend somebody with these terms but i [TS]

00:11:20   mean i think it is there they are [TS]

00:11:21   actively we're not saying these as a [TS]

00:11:24   pejorative I think I don't know that [TS]

00:11:26   there's definitely first of all I think [TS]

00:11:27   there's definitely an attempt to and at [TS]

00:11:30   least initially portray this guy as not [TS]

00:11:33   just having sort of mental and emotional [TS]

00:11:35   disturbances but i think he'd be very [TS]

00:11:37   much reads as somebody on on the [TS]

00:11:40   spectrum and you know and i think it's a [TS]

00:11:42   pretty fantastic time for us getting a [TS]

00:11:46   better understanding of how it works [TS]

00:11:48   when you're you know when you're talking [TS]

00:11:50   about people being on the spectrum [TS]

00:11:51   because we're learning so much more as a [TS]

00:11:52   great new book about this you know [TS]

00:11:54   people in my family I I who have are on [TS]

00:11:57   the spectrum called people in my family [TS]

00:11:58   who I adore [TS]

00:11:59   I mean something I'm hearing a lot of [TS]

00:12:01   people talk about now that I learned on [TS]

00:12:02   a pretty long time ago is just because [TS]

00:12:04   you know you talk to me and I'm i'm [TS]

00:12:07   nodding and I'm making faces and I'm you [TS]

00:12:09   know a finishing your sentences that you [TS]

00:12:11   know that I'm listening [TS]

00:12:12   even if I'm interrupting you and in the [TS]

00:12:14   case of some of these folks and then [TS]

00:12:15   they seem like you say like like it's a [TS]

00:12:16   deer in headlights [TS]

00:12:17   what we now know though is that this [TS]

00:12:20   looks are maybe not appearing to even be [TS]

00:12:22   listening to you but they are picking up [TS]

00:12:24   they can be picked not only be listening [TS]

00:12:27   and assimilating information in a way [TS]

00:12:28   that you would not but that there [TS]

00:12:31   I don't know it's it's a gift in some [TS]

00:12:33   ways that some of these folks have our [TS]

00:12:35   are very gifted and what they're able to [TS]

00:12:37   do with the information they get it's [TS]

00:12:38   just because they're a fact is [TS]

00:12:40   nontraditional the end up getting pegged [TS]

00:12:42   as you say being being a robot so I just [TS]

00:12:44   gonna be a little bit sensitive about [TS]

00:12:45   that but i think i made with that said I [TS]

00:12:48   think that they are very much setting [TS]

00:12:50   him up part of their way that they [TS]

00:12:52   greatly disrupt our our our expectations [TS]

00:12:54   about Elliot article like oh i thought i [TS]

00:12:56   knew this and then I saw this but you [TS]

00:12:57   know what that goes for a bunch of the [TS]

00:12:59   characters like you think you understand [TS]

00:13:00   Darlene you know you probably really [TS]

00:13:02   don't really building you know and i and [TS]

00:13:04   i like that i like the fact that all the [TS]

00:13:05   characters are most of the characters if [TS]

00:13:07   you think you understand wellick go away [TS]

00:13:11   run away thinking one understands well I [TS]

00:13:14   never show well if your business card [TS]

00:13:15   yeah let's just leave it though that you [TS]

00:13:17   know we can just listen to these for [TS]

00:13:19   nerds like i can say with confidence [TS]

00:13:20   that at least give the pilot a throw [TS]

00:13:23   I think it's I think it's really [TS]

00:13:25   engrossing and as with you know like you [TS]

00:13:26   know how Jason hour [TS]

00:13:27   we saying like least I feel like I'm [TS]

00:13:29   always saying like you know check out [TS]

00:13:30   Hawkeye and saga if you hate hawk I hate [TS]

00:13:32   saga maybe comics are for you at least [TS]

00:13:35   give the at least give the the pilot of [TS]

00:13:37   this a throw because I if you don't find [TS]

00:13:39   it gross and you're probably I can enjoy [TS]

00:13:40   the show but it may not be what you [TS]

00:13:42   think and i would say just at least give [TS]

00:13:43   it a try now and and you know kind of [TS]

00:13:45   the point i was i was kind of reaching [TS]

00:13:47   towards and what the Creator said point [TS]

00:13:48   blank is it's it's not about being all [TS]

00:13:51   twisty surprise eee right don't get [TS]

00:13:53   caught up in trying to solve this like a [TS]

00:13:55   buzz rights [TS]

00:13:56   yes yes it's not that it's not the point [TS]

00:13:58   of it is not named night shamel and [TS]

00:14:00   moving right there are some twists along [TS]

00:14:03   the way that's kind of not what the [TS]

00:14:06   story is all about [TS]

00:14:10   this week being comfortable is brought [TS]

00:14:14   to you by fan duel [TS]

00:14:17   this is not a website where you schedule [TS]

00:14:19   a duel with your nemesis to meet on the [TS]

00:14:23   community green pistols at dawn [TS]

00:14:26   no it's much more civilized this is the [TS]

00:14:28   opening week of the NFL regular-season [TS]

00:14:31   that's American football for our non [TS]

00:14:33   american football knowing listeners and [TS]

00:14:36   I've been playing fantasy football for [TS]

00:14:38   many years now [TS]

00:14:39   actually since high school I've still [TS]

00:14:40   got a league the stupid fake league we [TS]

00:14:42   play every year but it's the traditional [TS]

00:14:44   kind of fantasy where you draft a team [TS]

00:14:47   and have lineups every weekend at the [TS]

00:14:48   end of the season [TS]

00:14:49   somebody wins and maybe throw some money [TS]

00:14:51   in the kitty and the winner takes that [TS]

00:14:53   away [TS]

00:14:54   vandal is more for our quick hit life [TS]

00:14:57   that we live now also means that you [TS]

00:14:59   don't have to commit to being involved [TS]

00:15:01   grinding weekend and week out [TS]

00:15:03   it's the leader in one week fantasy [TS]

00:15:05   football and there are more payouts than [TS]

00:15:08   the other side so you can enter a league [TS]

00:15:10   for a week we start a one-dollar anyone [TS]

00:15:13   can play there are bigger pay ends and [TS]

00:15:16   bigger payouts if you want to choose [TS]

00:15:17   it's about a competition with the other [TS]

00:15:19   people who are entering that pool you [TS]

00:15:20   pick up team you don't have to compete [TS]

00:15:23   with other people for your favorite [TS]

00:15:25   players but you do have a salary cap so [TS]

00:15:26   you have to choose how to balance your [TS]

00:15:29   stars with your more underappreciated [TS]

00:15:31   players find the best balance that [TS]

00:15:33   scores the most points in any given week [TS]

00:15:35   very smart III use FanDuel a couple [TS]

00:15:38   weeks ago during the preseason really [TS]

00:15:41   nice interface interesting test of how [TS]

00:15:43   you balance the salary cap line up a lot [TS]

00:15:46   of fun so you should give it a try by [TS]

00:15:48   going to FanDuel dot-com fa and tu l [TS]

00:16:30   today thank you to FanDuel for [TS]

00:16:32   sponsoring the uncomfortable [TS]

00:16:36   okay we're gonna fire off the spoiler [TS]

00:16:38   for now and if you haven't watched mr. [TS]

00:16:41   aleko go watch it and then come back and [TS]

00:16:43   listen to us talk about the rest of it [TS]

00:16:49   the show socks they think it's good but [TS]

00:16:55   no now we know they know the truth or [TS]

00:16:58   get started before we get into all the [TS]

00:16:59   spot things let's talk about something I [TS]

00:17:00   want to talk about but I thought I [TS]

00:17:01   couldn't talk about spoiling games is [TS]

00:17:03   how this show looks and how its shot [TS]

00:17:06   which seems like it's totally [TS]

00:17:06   spoiler-free but I kind of think it is [TS]

00:17:08   and I can relate to the plot because [TS]

00:17:10   it's not that these are things about it [TS]

00:17:12   first [TS]

00:17:13   it's clear that this does not have a [TS]

00:17:14   game of thrones sighs budget also the [TS]

00:17:16   location of your interior is there some [TS]

00:17:18   city streets outside that's basically it [TS]

00:17:20   for the show like there's very little it [TS]

00:17:23   seems like you could shoot a cheaply [TS]

00:17:24   because you just need interiors of [TS]

00:17:26   apartment buildings and office buildings [TS]

00:17:27   a couple of streets very few locations [TS]

00:17:30   and you're done I'd agree the only the [TS]

00:17:32   only exception i would say is that it's [TS]

00:17:33   very clearly shot in New York and they [TS]

00:17:35   make really good use of it being shot in [TS]

00:17:38   New York I feel like like I felt like we [TS]

00:17:41   were in New York where you know when [TS]

00:17:43   they should in Toronto the dumpling [TS]

00:17:44   place is a real dumping place you can [TS]

00:17:46   see it on google maps i have been like [TS]

00:17:48   in terms of it is not like games are [TS]

00:17:49   throwing those castles had dragons or [TS]

00:17:51   CGI lots of costumes or 11 shots in the [TS]

00:17:53   mountains or whatever right so and see [TS]

00:17:55   us a size budget right and what can you [TS]

00:17:58   really do with that budget to make a [TS]

00:18:00   show interesting and I was really [TS]

00:18:01   impressed with how they made the show [TS]

00:18:03   not look like other shows and look [TS]

00:18:05   interesting and and weird i think it's [TS]

00:18:07   shot weirdly is completely shot with my [TS]

00:18:11   first I mean like from the first gosh I [TS]

00:18:13   don't know i don't have in front of me [TS]

00:18:15   from the first I want to say five [TS]

00:18:16   minutes i thought wow this this cat [TS]

00:18:18   really likes David Fincher it it really [TS]

00:18:20   reminded me a lot of the whoever is [TS]

00:18:23   doing the cinematography and making a [TS]

00:18:25   lot of the just decisions about a David [TS]

00:18:27   Fincher movie and then of course there's [TS]

00:18:30   just the framing for the lighting in the [TS]

00:18:33   framing I mean I feel like it's an [TS]

00:18:34   affront to John siracusa when I watched [TS]

00:18:36   at home i have to flip my TV in the game [TS]

00:18:37   mode to actually be able to watch it [TS]

00:18:39   it's so dark it's not just of you may be [TS]

00:18:42   getting a little bit out of tune there [TS]

00:18:43   but like the color grading is a lot like [TS]

00:18:45   venture but the framing is crazy pants [TS]

00:18:47   is crazy screaming I feel like in the [TS]

00:18:49   lower lower third like that happen [TS]

00:18:51   what about thirds he's in the reason the [TS]

00:18:53   lower one day 6 of the screen like the [TS]

00:18:56   only thing that's ahead and the head [TS]

00:18:58   like is not even entirely visible the [TS]

00:19:00   ears off screen and just peeking at the [TS]

00:19:02   lower right corner of your sixteen by [TS]

00:19:03   nine screen is like I nose in an eyeball [TS]

00:19:05   the whole rest of the screen is back [TS]

00:19:06   Todd vanderwerff has a good piece I link [TS]

00:19:08   to it and the show notes you guys check [TS]

00:19:10   it out it's on box.com about it's called [TS]

00:19:14   the mr. became an obsession thanks to [TS]

00:19:17   one weird visual trick with funny but [TS]

00:19:20   it's it's it's splitting splitting this [TS]

00:19:22   you know the screen 3 is vertically and [TS]

00:19:24   horizontally see what it is not the rule [TS]

00:19:26   of thirds it is worst i think that rule [TS]

00:19:28   so eight so this is the official it's [TS]

00:19:30   like a Brady Bunch kind of set of 9 and [TS]

00:19:32   then you see these people on the extreme [TS]

00:19:34   edges of the screen and he's got some [TS]

00:19:36   screenshots in the story that a and it's [TS]

00:19:39   absolutely true when you watch i watch [TS]

00:19:41   that first episode I was at and Merlin [TS]

00:19:43   you you you mentioned this earlier i was [TS]

00:19:45   positively giddy and which is why I [TS]

00:19:47   think it's right to say watch episode 1 [TS]

00:19:49   and see what you think I was giddy i was [TS]

00:19:50   getting for a few reasons one is how i [TS]

00:19:52   was constantly being suffered and all my [TS]

00:19:54   expectations were just completely blown [TS]

00:19:56   out of the water as i watched Elliot's [TS]

00:19:58   behavior and and one of the other ones [TS]

00:20:00   is how is the visual stuff where I [TS]

00:20:02   couldn't I could not believe what I was [TS]

00:20:04   seeing it's like oh my god what are they [TS]

00:20:06   doing this is crazy and crazy in a good [TS]

00:20:08   way but totally not like anything I've [TS]

00:20:11   really seen on a on certainly didn't [TS]

00:20:13   expect from a TV show on the UN and it's [TS]

00:20:15   making its own visual language because [TS]

00:20:17   it's done with a purpose like it's not [TS]

00:20:18   like they're arbitrarily putting edge of [TS]

00:20:20   the screens right it's not like it's not [TS]

00:20:22   like Dutch Dutch angular shaky camera [TS]

00:20:23   it's not like they're doing some kind of [TS]

00:20:25   a trick like crossing the line like [TS]

00:20:26   we're you always make sure that guys [TS]

00:20:28   left right so they have people having [TS]

00:20:29   conversations and sometimes the speaker [TS]

00:20:33   a is on the far left side of the screen [TS]

00:20:34   and speaker speaker bees and the far [TS]

00:20:36   right side screen sometimes like the [TS]

00:20:38   like the heads if you take that this [TS]

00:20:39   krista frames from like showing the [TS]

00:20:41   speaker and then showing the next [TS]

00:20:42   speaker if the heads are close to each [TS]

00:20:44   other [TS]

00:20:45   I mean I don't know if the trends are [TS]

00:20:46   trying to decode the things like that [TS]

00:20:48   the people are shown to be close to each [TS]

00:20:50   other one of the heads of faraway the [TS]

00:20:51   people are are at a distance next [TS]

00:20:53   absolutely Liam that's absolutely what's [TS]

00:20:55   going on and I mean that's that's the [TS]

00:20:57   base most basic level then beyond that [TS]

00:20:58   you start doing angles and start doing [TS]

00:21:00   whose [TS]

00:21:01   Bob and whose below and I mean it's [TS]

00:21:03   something that every you know it's a [TS]

00:21:05   bait the basics of cinematography right [TS]

00:21:07   but done to such incredible extremes and [TS]

00:21:09   here's what is what i think is amazing [TS]

00:21:10   to show that it's done to such [TS]

00:21:12   incredible extremes and then the stuff [TS]

00:21:14   that's in basically the entire rest of [TS]

00:21:15   your TV screen 95% your screen is [TS]

00:21:17   covered with something that is not an [TS]

00:21:19   actor that stuff is interesting and cool [TS]

00:21:21   to like it worked into the shot it's not [TS]

00:21:23   just like it's blank background it real [TS]

00:21:25   and again it cheaply that really [TS]

00:21:27   beautifully shot soft focus when they [TS]

00:21:29   needed showing enough of the background [TS]

00:21:31   when they don't and then you know the [TS]

00:21:33   other thing that just makes me like you [TS]

00:21:34   know my like Jason I was a little giddy [TS]

00:21:36   that makes me love the show you more I [TS]

00:21:39   love this about girls too and this is [TS]

00:21:40   the reason I i saw the connection [TS]

00:21:41   besides like that you know quirky [TS]

00:21:43   low-budget sure whatever is the big [TS]

00:21:45   title the title mr. robot coming in and [TS]

00:21:48   3 episode the title placement and the [TS]

00:21:50   credits placement is carefully done [TS]

00:21:54   right in Michael it's part of the show [TS]

00:21:56   to come across culminating in that [TS]

00:21:58   awesome episode around seven ish or [TS]

00:22:00   whatever it's running now episode 6 45 [TS]

00:22:02   the big one you can't see it coming but [TS]

00:22:04   it's like all here comes they're gonna [TS]

00:22:05   do it with a storefront yes oh my god [TS]

00:22:08   yes let's put a payoff that and then I [TS]

00:22:11   guess that the final thing is the music [TS]

00:22:13   which is like this show you mentioned [TS]

00:22:14   this to the mr. robot is an 80 spot this [TS]

00:22:17   whole show seems like an 80 show it's [TS]

00:22:19   kind of weird that they have you know [TS]

00:22:20   smartphones in it right [TS]

00:22:22   the music that the weird swelling [TS]

00:22:23   electronic music the font everything [TS]

00:22:25   about it just like warms the heart of [TS]

00:22:27   the city's child which doesn't make [TS]

00:22:30   sense for a show set in modern times but [TS]

00:22:31   it just does well and it's it's because [TS]

00:22:34   part of part of it is for me is that [TS]

00:22:37   it's so visually arresting me when I'm [TS]

00:22:39   watching TV a lot of the time i'm [TS]

00:22:41   looking at my phone and making fun of [TS]

00:22:43   what i'm watching and this I can't take [TS]

00:22:46   my eyes off it because i want to see [TS]

00:22:48   what its gonna look like in the next [TS]

00:22:49   scene or the next shot right and part of [TS]

00:22:53   the reason is not just because it's [TS]

00:22:54   weird but because they're making these [TS]

00:22:57   just sort of visual references to to the [TS]

00:22:59   styles of things like Scorsese and [TS]

00:23:02   Kubrick and david fincher and and I mean [TS]

00:23:05   it's amazing to look at and and there's [TS]

00:23:08   a great article by Matthew Mads other [TS]

00:23:11   sites we which his title is mr. robot is [TS]

00:23:14   not a great show yet i don't quite agree [TS]

00:23:17   with him but he he points that even more [TS]

00:23:21   of those things and I was so happy to [TS]

00:23:23   see one of the things that point that is [TS]

00:23:25   the opening scene of the second episode [TS]

00:23:27   ends with music from stanley kubrick's [TS]

00:23:29   Barry Lyndon which how random is that [TS]

00:23:32   but it fits and and when I was watching [TS]

00:23:35   it I would i know that song why are you [TS]

00:23:38   using it that's insane [TS]

00:23:40   what does that have to do with hacking [TS]

00:23:42   but it fit perfectly [TS]

00:23:43   certainly more random the Pixies later [TS]

00:23:45   but yeah yeah so what can I can I ask [TS]

00:23:49   I mean I I always I i make my mention [TS]

00:23:52   this to dan I'm back to work or we got [TS]

00:23:54   in so much trouble for supposedly [TS]

00:23:56   spoiling this show for people by [TS]

00:23:57   mentioning the two words fight and club [TS]

00:23:59   but i'm curious John or whomever what do [TS]

00:24:04   you think is spoilery about the way that [TS]

00:24:06   it's shot that there's it's look that's [TS]

00:24:08   looking for something that we do this [TS]

00:24:10   not there and we don't see a lot of the [TS]

00:24:13   way it shot this is the second aspect [TS]

00:24:14   here thanks for bringing that back with [TS]

00:24:15   i forgot that threat you have when this [TS]

00:24:19   out during the show they do Telegraph a [TS]

00:24:21   lot of stuff even though I knew nothing [TS]

00:24:23   about the show again I thought it was a [TS]

00:24:24   comedy and people kept mentioning so I [TS]

00:24:25   literally knew nothing I was not spoiled [TS]

00:24:27   by anybody tweeting or anything like [TS]

00:24:28   that episode one right away I kind of [TS]

00:24:31   know where they're going with this i'm a [TS]

00:24:32   big fan of fight club anyway I'm kind of [TS]

00:24:34   prime to expect that kind of see where [TS]

00:24:36   they're going with it i hope that the [TS]

00:24:37   whole show wasn't going to hinge on this [TS]

00:24:39   and I'm kind of glad that it doesn't [TS]

00:24:40   seem too but they seem to be going that [TS]

00:24:42   direction so I since I knew from episode [TS]

00:24:45   1 this seems to be the direction they're [TS]

00:24:47   going from from the it is starting [TS]

00:24:48   voiceover on right i'm watching for it [TS]

00:24:51   what you're watching for is like hey [TS]

00:24:53   does anyone ever talked to Bruce Willis [TS]

00:24:54   right you're looking for are they are [TS]

00:24:56   they going to cheat it or whatever and [TS]

00:24:58   the way it shot they they try to subvert [TS]

00:25:02   that immediately by having people talk [TS]

00:25:05   to Christians later Drake directly in in [TS]

00:25:08   the presence of Elliot which is not [TS]

00:25:10   something that's done like it it's fair [TS]

00:25:12   game as you see later because of the way [TS]

00:25:14   they set things up but they're on Graham [TS]

00:25:16   right he's not an imaginary creature in [TS]

00:25:19   the way actually and ended it don't do [TS]

00:25:21   the fight club thing where it's either [TS]

00:25:22   one or the other and [TS]

00:25:23   they're never like they intentionally [TS]

00:25:25   shoot in line things up to let your like [TS]

00:25:28   what you're looking for i was looking [TS]

00:25:29   for it does anyone ever make eye contact [TS]

00:25:30   with Christmas later or to look through [TS]

00:25:32   him and Elliot they make eye contact [TS]

00:25:33   with legislators in those moments [TS]

00:25:35   Christian Slater is you know that is [TS]

00:25:37   that with the person who they're talking [TS]

00:25:38   to it you know me like you get that you [TS]

00:25:40   get the more you realize that at that [TS]

00:25:41   point Elliot is basically deactivated [TS]

00:25:43   he's over in a corner staring at the [TS]

00:25:44   screens I'm it's unreliable narrator all [TS]

00:25:47   the way through to the camera lens right [TS]

00:25:48   and so they get away with trying to say [TS]

00:25:50   you thought we were going to fucking but [TS]

00:25:52   we're totally not like how everyone's [TS]

00:25:53   dealing with christian slater like it [TS]

00:25:54   he's obviously like they have [TS]

00:25:56   conversations with christian slater and [TS]

00:25:57   then three lines later talk to Elliot [TS]

00:25:59   it's like well they're both obviously [TS]

00:26:00   there because the other characters were [TS]

00:26:01   all talking to them right and just that [TS]

00:26:03   they they're like we're not playing by [TS]

00:26:05   the rules of any even though they're [TS]

00:26:07   obviously referencing all the stuff [TS]

00:26:08   they're not playing by the rules of [TS]

00:26:10   sixth sense they're not playing by the [TS]

00:26:11   rules of Fight Club playing by the rules [TS]

00:26:12   of this show on the road to the show our [TS]

00:26:14   are the next level of unreliable [TS]

00:26:16   narrator everything that you see is [TS]

00:26:18   unreliable after the cameras I'm [TS]

00:26:19   reliable URL you is like he's it's [TS]

00:26:22   almost like he's not afterwards [TS]

00:26:24   disassociated but as I went back and [TS]

00:26:26   watched the first episode probably three [TS]

00:26:27   times and second or third time i watched [TS]

00:26:29   it as dan and I were getting deeper and [TS]

00:26:31   deeper into this whole fight club theory [TS]

00:26:32   there was a scene relatively early on [TS]

00:26:35   where where Elliot is standing across [TS]

00:26:38   the street from the restaurant and mr. [TS]

00:26:42   robot walks up and starts hassling [TS]

00:26:43   people at a table and was the first time [TS]

00:26:45   where I was like em I don't this holds [TS]

00:26:47   up because obviously he's like acting [TS]

00:26:50   like a homeless guy and he's actively [TS]

00:26:52   like bugging people at this table who [TS]

00:26:54   are interacting with him but also as you [TS]

00:26:56   say in that case [TS]

00:26:57   Elliot is an observer of that right you [TS]

00:26:59   know the only thing we know is Elliot [TS]

00:27:01   across the street is is watching all [TS]

00:27:02   this happen which i think is makes it so [TS]

00:27:05   much more interesting idea this did [TS]

00:27:06   enough that's right words associated on [TS]

00:27:08   like that he's got this yet there's [TS]

00:27:10   these two things going on and like and [TS]

00:27:12   you know and you know anybody also like [TS]

00:27:14   me we have to look at some point about [TS]

00:27:15   the whole evil Corps that court thing [TS]

00:27:16   and like how at some point you know [TS]

00:27:18   fairly early on unreliable narrator [TS]

00:27:21   reading that he everything that he [TS]

00:27:22   mentioned a thing that he mentioned now [TS]

00:27:24   is appearing on screens and other people [TS]

00:27:26   are calling at evil Corp so yeah like [TS]

00:27:27   you say John you know beyond unreliable [TS]

00:27:29   narrator and then obviously then by the [TS]

00:27:31   end of the series that you finally get [TS]

00:27:33   to that like Oh [TS]

00:27:35   moment where you're like oh no I really [TS]

00:27:37   can't rely on his narrow he doesn't [TS]

00:27:39   remember what happened like he is he is [TS]

00:27:41   truly disconnected from himself and [TS]

00:27:44   which is just it's it's so chilling it's [TS]

00:27:46   almost like waking up from a night of [TS]

00:27:47   like blackout drinking and trying to [TS]

00:27:49   deconstruct what happened was horrible [TS]

00:27:50   nights in college were like oh no that [TS]

00:27:53   happened and that happened and having [TS]

00:27:55   him have to start watching that dawning [TS]

00:27:57   realization as he's realizing like what [TS]

00:27:59   has happened is I found incredibly [TS]

00:28:00   incredibly affecting the moment where [TS]

00:28:02   they I feel like producers are hanging [TS]

00:28:05   lantern on it and and really saying and [TS]

00:28:07   this came out in the interviews [TS]

00:28:08   afterward like we weren't trying to keep [TS]

00:28:11   you guessing we were trying to lead you [TS]

00:28:12   ahead of Elliot to the realization that [TS]

00:28:14   Christian Slater is part of it is part [TS]

00:28:17   of his / own person if not his own [TS]

00:28:19   personality that I was out ahead of it [TS]

00:28:21   but then like the show like I was out of [TS]

00:28:24   heaven i was looking for it but then [TS]

00:28:26   when I saw the things that the show [TS]

00:28:27   didn't like well wish the show is having [TS]

00:28:29   fun with us because obviously it's [TS]

00:28:31   trying it knows that we're going to [TS]

00:28:32   expect this like when they were in the [TS]

00:28:34   the f society headquarters by you know [TS]

00:28:36   Coney Island or whatever and they had [TS]

00:28:37   all the groups of hackers talking [TS]

00:28:38   together they had scenes with [TS]

00:28:41   conversations and debates that involved [TS]

00:28:42   both Elliot and mr. oh yeah as if [TS]

00:28:45   they're all there and it was trying to [TS]

00:28:47   like chill out of that thing don't worry [TS]

00:28:49   too much don't worry too much Elliott [TS]

00:28:50   said it's literally said f Society like [TS]

00:28:53   two times on the couch in the first [TS]

00:28:54   episode [TS]

00:28:55   don't worry about that at all that might [TS]

00:28:57   have all been a red herring [TS]

00:28:58   it's all fine and you know the whole [TS]

00:29:00   reveal of whom mr. robot was but that [TS]

00:29:02   was telegraphed as well but then they [TS]

00:29:04   spent a lot of the time in the show [TS]

00:29:05   saying well that can obviously be the [TS]

00:29:06   case because he would remember him and [TS]

00:29:08   they're having like you don't understand [TS]

00:29:09   the depths of what's going on yeah you [TS]

00:29:11   know they have a conversation about him [TS]

00:29:13   we haven't seen a picture of him but on [TS]

00:29:15   the other hand you know obviously was as [TS]

00:29:18   you know he would remember that [TS]

00:29:20   anyway I i like that that that it [TS]

00:29:22   stirred that stuff into a big stew and I [TS]

00:29:25   also like the fact that that's not what [TS]

00:29:27   this is all leading to what you're [TS]

00:29:28   really worried about what I'm really [TS]

00:29:30   worried about in the show is Elliot is a [TS]

00:29:32   character and how his you know how his [TS]

00:29:36   life is evolving and what it's going to [TS]

00:29:37   mean for all the people around him right [TS]

00:29:39   and that is more interesting than what [TS]

00:29:42   is the truth of [TS]

00:29:43   they're the they're the situation in any [TS]

00:29:46   particular scene it's much more [TS]

00:29:47   interesting to say I I don't we don't we [TS]

00:29:49   may not know what the truth is here but [TS]

00:29:50   how does this affect everybody else's we [TS]

00:29:53   see kind of in midseason which I thought [TS]

00:29:54   was a they could save that for the big [TS]

00:29:57   finale what happens to what's-her-name [TS]

00:29:58   the neighbor shayla there you go like [TS]

00:30:01   that that is exactly what i was looking [TS]

00:30:03   for the show is like yeah it's being [TS]

00:30:07   close to this person with these these [TS]

00:30:10   talents but these problems as well and [TS]

00:30:12   these ambitions and these sort of [TS]

00:30:13   philosophies about life has not good [TS]

00:30:18   consequences that was actually was the [TS]

00:30:21   10 brave traveler episode 6 that was [TS]

00:30:24   actually one of my favorites of the [TS]

00:30:26   season and that i watched a couple times [TS]

00:30:27   a prison break [TS]

00:30:28   yeah yeah I thought that was I thought [TS]

00:30:32   that was pretty amazing i mean you know [TS]

00:30:33   i did I like them all but I mean some [TS]

00:30:35   more than others but that one that I [TS]

00:30:36   thought I thought the what's-his-name a [TS]

00:30:40   verra verra those guys you know he was a [TS]

00:30:44   great creepy creepy was a great and also [TS]

00:30:46   but that's another one where like the [TS]

00:30:48   whole opening in the cell with bouncing [TS]

00:30:50   the ball and all that stuff but you know [TS]

00:30:52   it's just it's fun to see Elliot on the [TS]

00:30:54   ropes and find fun but I mean part of [TS]

00:30:57   what makes this so great is Elliot on [TS]

00:30:58   the ropes being such a mess how he is [TS]

00:31:00   and having so many vulnerabilities and [TS]

00:31:01   confusions and seeing how he does it [TS]

00:31:04   doesn't get out of it is is a huge [TS]

00:31:05   driving factor in it i just want to [TS]

00:31:06   underscore agree with David I like the [TS]

00:31:08   fact that it wasn't a puzzle box [TS]

00:31:09   I like that this wasn't about like what [TS]

00:31:11   is the magnet mean on the island that [TS]

00:31:13   you know like once you solve this one [TS]

00:31:15   mystery you understand the show like I i [TS]

00:31:16   love that like it added a lot but why [TS]

00:31:19   why do they go in the ferris wheel what [TS]

00:31:21   is the meaning of the ferris wheel in [TS]

00:31:22   the know ferris wheel Tim Merry back i [TS]

00:31:26   added to marlon episode 6 I want to talk [TS]

00:31:29   about this um I liked it but it feels [TS]

00:31:33   like it's the most out of place in the [TS]

00:31:35   entire season because it feels like a TV [TS]

00:31:37   show episode like an episodic like this [TS]

00:31:40   week Elliott has to break somebody out [TS]

00:31:42   of jail and it felt a little bit like it [TS]

00:31:45   wasn't this about the rest of the story [TS]

00:31:47   but more like and just be cynical for a [TS]

00:31:50   moment like he was short on episodes and [TS]

00:31:53   they were able to insert this little [TS]

00:31:55   dude [TS]

00:31:55   russian that because shayla gets killed [TS]

00:31:59   at the end it adds something to sort of [TS]

00:32:01   Elliott's character but it feels to me [TS]

00:32:03   in most ways unnecessary which is not to [TS]

00:32:07   say that it isn't good but unlike every [TS]

00:32:09   other episode in the season episode 6 [TS]

00:32:11   feels like it could have just been [TS]

00:32:13   slotted in or removed with very little [TS]

00:32:15   difference so because it's because [TS]

00:32:17   you're going to contribute because it [TS]

00:32:18   didn't contribute so much to the f [TS]

00:32:20   Society and Elliot arcs yeah it's just a [TS]

00:32:22   selfie I mean it's a standalone episode [TS]

00:32:23   I thought it told us a lot about Elliot [TS]

00:32:25   but it was not stand alone because it [TS]

00:32:27   resolves the the shale Ark which was [TS]

00:32:29   true which is through the entire season [TS]

00:32:30   I think the season has acts and I think [TS]

00:32:32   that middle act with shayla and and vera [TS]

00:32:35   and everything how do you pronounce the [TS]

00:32:36   name verra verra that was the breaking [TS]

00:32:38   bad section of the show and then I don't [TS]

00:32:41   know what you would call the first part [TS]

00:32:42   and then the final third like it i would [TS]

00:32:44   break it up into thirds like that and [TS]

00:32:45   there is a little bit of discontinuity [TS]

00:32:47   there but i think it's not stand alone [TS]

00:32:49   because it results like I said it [TS]

00:32:50   resolves the shale thread which is [TS]

00:32:52   important to resolve because in the [TS]

00:32:53   beginning they set things up [TS]

00:32:55   you've got the the childhood friend [TS]

00:32:57   potential love interest and you're like [TS]

00:33:00   is it Gabby will they won't they type [TS]

00:33:01   thing you've got the neighbor person who [TS]

00:33:04   also happens to be a drug dealer [TS]

00:33:06   you've got the psychiatrist and you've [TS]

00:33:09   got the work life and these things like [TS]

00:33:12   they it's not like a regular TV show [TS]

00:33:14   where he's just going to continue and [TS]

00:33:16   he's always going to have the the local [TS]

00:33:19   girl and he's always going to have the [TS]

00:33:20   childhood friend that like you don't get [TS]

00:33:22   through the first season and the [TS]

00:33:23   neighbor girl is gone right [TS]

00:33:25   these threads needs all go somewhere so [TS]

00:33:27   she knows ark was the smallest and the [TS]

00:33:29   steepest and it resolved itself [TS]

00:33:32   midseason if you took out that [TS]

00:33:34   particular episode then what did you do [TS]

00:33:36   just hang around for the rest of things [TS]

00:33:37   like it's not that kind of TV show I [TS]

00:33:39   feel like everything everything in it [TS]

00:33:40   even just in this very short for [TS]

00:33:42   single-season how does Colby change how [TS]

00:33:45   does evil Corp change how does [TS]

00:33:47   what's-his-name the crazy Swedish guy [TS]

00:33:50   like well I had as well a time should i [TS]

00:33:52   see well yeah yeah every every recognize [TS]

00:33:55   their recognize that name John yeah [TS]

00:33:57   every character on this show even just a [TS]

00:34:00   short season it was only eight episodes [TS]

00:34:02   right out how many episodes 10 short [TS]

00:34:05   episodes every character is totally [TS]

00:34:08   different than you expected them to be [TS]

00:34:09   and has changed from the beginning and [TS]

00:34:11   some of them aren't even there and [TS]

00:34:12   that's one of the things i like about [TS]

00:34:14   the show is that it moves that you can [TS]

00:34:15   kind of see that maybe was the most [TS]

00:34:16   creative moves fast that it is not going [TS]

00:34:19   to be a show where season after season [TS]

00:34:21   are familiar characters have adventures [TS]

00:34:24   because they're all going to change and [TS]

00:34:26   be changed and I mean who would have [TS]

00:34:28   thought that Angela the beginning and [TS]

00:34:29   Angela at the end are totally different [TS]

00:34:32   places but you kind of understand how [TS]

00:34:34   Angela got to the point where she's [TS]

00:34:35   scolding the the product salesman and [TS]

00:34:37   conflicted about it [TS]

00:34:39   alright and Elliot you know he's on his [TS]

00:34:41   journey of discovering himself [TS]

00:34:45   everybody makes a lot of progress and i [TS]

00:34:47   think it is there is a thematic sort of [TS]

00:34:50   potential and construct the magic maybe [TS]

00:34:52   like a inconsistency of mood like is [TS]

00:34:54   this breaking bad is this a sopranos is [TS]

00:34:57   this orange is the new black is this [TS]

00:35:00   monk it's kind of all them and one big [TS]

00:35:04   glorious messenger [TS]

00:35:05   well and what one of the things that [TS]

00:35:07   struck me about that episode was because [TS]

00:35:10   it did feel a little weird a place I [TS]

00:35:12   kind of wondered if that was a script or [TS]

00:35:15   if that started as a script that they [TS]

00:35:17   said show us what the sixth episode [TS]

00:35:19   would be like and so they wrote it and [TS]

00:35:22   then they figured out a way to work in [TS]

00:35:24   more of the story line once they made [TS]

00:35:26   the rest of the series was sort of like [TS]

00:35:28   well we've already written the script [TS]

00:35:29   you know and and it can work nicely [TS]

00:35:32   fitting in the different arcs and and [TS]

00:35:35   you know but ya did it felt odd to me [TS]

00:35:39   too but that's but that's a common thing [TS]

00:35:42   where they say what's the seventh season [TS]

00:35:44   premiere tell me that before reorder [TS]

00:35:46   your series [TS]

00:35:47   I and I don't doubt that in the end you [TS]

00:35:49   know you couldn't remove episode 6 and [TS]

00:35:51   have it be something else it just it [TS]

00:35:52   felt to me like something that was [TS]

00:35:53   inserted sort of later and then made to [TS]

00:35:58   fit into the season which is which is [TS]

00:36:00   fine in it and it does that but you know [TS]

00:36:01   it is as a standalone episode i mean if [TS]

00:36:03   you pointed to one episode and said what [TS]

00:36:05   say you know give me an episode of mr. [TS]

00:36:07   robot to watch i would say watch the [TS]

00:36:08   first one and you'll get hooked but [TS]

00:36:10   episode 6 [TS]

00:36:11   look like has a beginning and an ending [TS]

00:36:12   which most of the episodes they do but [TS]

00:36:15   they're not as as clear as I i caii [TS]

00:36:18   total you know when you put it that way [TS]

00:36:20   I see what you're saying [TS]

00:36:20   I just I thought I found that very guy [TS]

00:36:23   like so annoying in the previous ones I [TS]

00:36:25   thought he was so good in this high [TS]

00:36:26   Gregory you know what it is partly Jason [TS]

00:36:28   is that you know what's so frustrating [TS]

00:36:31   about so many movies movies in so many [TS]

00:36:34   comic books is like it's very difficult [TS]

00:36:36   to understand why anybody does what they [TS]

00:36:37   do and the stakes are always everything [TS]

00:36:40   and you know that becomes so frustrating [TS]

00:36:42   in common because you're like I'm why [TS]

00:36:43   did they do that or like what does it [TS]

00:36:44   always have to be about the destruction [TS]

00:36:45   of the universe in the ultimate [TS]

00:36:47   nullifier and all that kind of stuff and [TS]

00:36:49   and i think i like that episode because [TS]

00:36:50   I i liked it that the stakes were not [TS]

00:36:54   everything but also the motivation is [TS]

00:36:57   very very super high and easy to [TS]

00:36:59   understand and and I think it helps us [TS]

00:37:01   understand more about Elliot to see you [TS]

00:37:03   know it's fun to see him like his way [TS]

00:37:04   out of a problem but it's fun to see [TS]

00:37:06   Elliot desperate like I thought that [TS]

00:37:08   really it helped to see him like again [TS]

00:37:10   yeah you know up against the ropes in [TS]

00:37:12   this lake is that you know okay we [TS]

00:37:15   haven't talked about the narration like [TS]

00:37:16   we always no narration is death and yet [TS]

00:37:17   his narration is as I think so so [TS]

00:37:19   terrific most of the time now i think i [TS]

00:37:21   think you're right that perhaps in some [TS]

00:37:22   ways episode 6 is there to remind us the [TS]

00:37:24   deli it has capabilities and is not just [TS]

00:37:26   a mess one even if we take it as read [TS]

00:37:29   that society is a thing that he's [TS]

00:37:30   participating in those goals for this [TS]

00:37:32   happening and either our steaks if it [TS]

00:37:33   goes wrong it is it really isn't about [TS]

00:37:36   like the the end of the world [TS]

00:37:37   necessarily like saving the world isn't [TS]

00:37:39   like that's part of what you're [TS]

00:37:41   wondering the show is are these guys all [TS]

00:37:43   just kind of you know smoking each [TS]

00:37:47   other's you know like it isn't i did not [TS]

00:37:50   actually going to cause the downfall of [TS]

00:37:52   anything orbit and they play off the [TS]

00:37:54   evil corporate like I loved at the end [TS]

00:37:56   of the explanation of evil Corp and the [TS]

00:37:58   lawsuit and the the deaths and they're [TS]

00:38:00   planning for in the fun that had made [TS]

00:38:02   like 50 times that much of the spot like [TS]

00:38:04   this is beautiful and so you have to [TS]

00:38:06   wonder all these hackers together I [TS]

00:38:07   think that wasn't what you really write [TS]

00:38:10   our order they just think they're gonna [TS]

00:38:11   change real so you can never get a bead [TS]

00:38:13   on whether everybody involved enough [TS]

00:38:15   society is high on their own supply and [TS]

00:38:18   is not you know that they did their [TS]

00:38:21   comical or if they really are incredibly [TS]

00:38:23   dangerous [TS]

00:38:24   and don't realize the extent of the [TS]

00:38:26   damage there in like almost like there's [TS]

00:38:27   like a kind of like a script kiddie [TS]

00:38:29   thing to have like you know we're gonna [TS]

00:38:30   take everybody down with these are [TS]

00:38:31   likely is that does that philosophy have [TS]

00:38:33   any foundation did they really believe [TS]

00:38:34   it who really believes it like [TS]

00:38:36   especially once mr. robot is taken out [TS]

00:38:38   of the picture are folded in that you're [TS]

00:38:39   not even sure that Elliot is on board [TS]

00:38:41   with himself involving it and the sister [TS]

00:38:43   and everyone else has their reasons for [TS]

00:38:45   being there but like in the end of a [TS]

00:38:46   actually gonna end like the the dark [TS]

00:38:48   army are they more serious thats they [TS]

00:38:50   see more serious especially with the [TS]

00:38:52   final episode you know so that tension [TS]

00:38:54   is is hanging over this entire thing I [TS]

00:38:56   think so you this episode that episode 6 [TS]

00:39:00   getting back to that the stakes are [TS]

00:39:02   smaller but they're clear that these are [TS]

00:39:04   plain old criminals they're thugs [TS]

00:39:06   they're bad people they're going to do [TS]

00:39:08   bad things you don't have to wonder if [TS]

00:39:09   it's going to be the taking down of the [TS]

00:39:11   entire credit system or erasing the dead [TS]

00:39:13   or anything like that it is very small [TS]

00:39:16   but very real concrete steaks and I I [TS]

00:39:18   think episode 6 I would never tell [TS]

00:39:20   anyone to start there because i think it [TS]

00:39:21   doesn't go anywhere unless you've been [TS]

00:39:23   introduced to show through all the other [TS]

00:39:25   episodes and met via I I loved his [TS]

00:39:28   creepy Underpants introduction thing and [TS]

00:39:30   all those you know that hold you have to [TS]

00:39:33   you have to care about the people before [TS]

00:39:34   episode 6i think I plus 6 is right where [TS]

00:39:36   that goes [TS]

00:39:37   it is this is the very Breaking Bad [TS]

00:39:39   middle section of the series and I [TS]

00:39:40   suppose you could remove it and continue [TS]

00:39:42   the arc but I didn't and that was the [TS]

00:39:44   most involved and excited i was i think [TS]

00:39:46   around episode 6 and 7 also also I mean [TS]

00:39:50   we haven't talked much about Elliot's [TS]

00:39:51   habit but you know obviously he has very [TS]

00:39:54   strong feelings for shayla but she's [TS]

00:39:55   also the supplier for his very [TS]

00:39:58   particular needs right and in some ways [TS]

00:40:01   like there's that there are steaks [TS]

00:40:02   beyond his affection to her going away [TS]

00:40:04   he's very straightforward than the [TS]

00:40:05   voice-over is like I gotta decide you [TS]

00:40:08   know this guy did you go to jail but [TS]

00:40:09   think about my supply like you know his [TS]

00:40:11   whole he has very sort of not be like [TS]

00:40:17   premeditated reasons for everything he [TS]

00:40:19   does everyone in his life has a function [TS]

00:40:21   and he weighs the pros and cons and [TS]

00:40:23   makes a call let a sort of it and [TS]

00:40:25   clear-headed narrated weigh it against [TS]

00:40:28   similar with the breaking bad type thing [TS]

00:40:30   of like him coming around to saying this [TS]

00:40:32   guy's got to go i can make that happen [TS]

00:40:34   only starts off as the the bald-headed [TS]

00:40:37   Walter White he doesn't he doesn't have [TS]

00:40:38   money you know he's there from episode [TS]

00:40:40   one right [TS]

00:40:41   it seems kind of very reptilian until [TS]

00:40:43   the course you realize that he doesn't [TS]

00:40:45   even know it and it is going on inside [TS]

00:40:47   his own head so he's really not he's [TS]

00:40:49   really nice clean the house clear-eyed [TS]

00:40:50   view of the world as he likes to think [TS]

00:40:52   he does now that's one of the great [TS]

00:40:53   undermining moments in the first episode [TS]

00:40:55   as you do you think you've got this guy [TS]

00:40:56   kind of Wired and you you realize all [TS]

00:40:59   the various drugs that he's taking and [TS]

00:41:01   this supplier's across the hall and [TS]

00:41:03   she's got some other drugs that he could [TS]

00:41:04   take two and then they have sex and [TS]

00:41:06   you're like what am I seeing here when [TS]

00:41:07   he's got a system like you're like oh no [TS]

00:41:10   nothing's worse than a smart drug drug [TS]

00:41:13   user with a system because he's gonna [TS]

00:41:14   take this amount of stuff with this much [TS]

00:41:16   stuff make sure he doesn't get addicted [TS]

00:41:18   you know it doesn't overdose but that's [TS]

00:41:19   all that all falls apart [TS]

00:41:21   yeah almost immediately to which is a [TS]

00:41:23   yes so um what should we talk about him [TS]

00:41:27   and christian slater we've touched on i [TS]

00:41:28   really enjoyed his performance in this [TS]

00:41:30   I'd say it's you know he was [TS]

00:41:32   delightfully gets to be the is the [TS]

00:41:34   slider easiest uh yeah he is so sweet [TS]

00:41:37   three so Heather's ok it's just it's [TS]

00:41:39   really nice i like that when you don't [TS]

00:41:41   know what's going on and he kind of he [TS]

00:41:43   kind of intrude on Elliot and so let me [TS]

00:41:44   let me explain what's going on and talk [TS]

00:41:46   about this and cuts tries to stop at a [TS]

00:41:48   few points and all that it's just really [TS]

00:41:50   enjoyable I love that he's this kind of [TS]

00:41:51   you know guy in a jumpsuit who talks to [TS]

00:41:55   him on the subway and then get taken to [TS]

00:41:57   coney island and they're riding the [TS]

00:41:58   ferris wheel and all that it's all it's [TS]

00:42:00   really enjoyable it's a great [TS]

00:42:01   interaction been rather rami malek just [TS]

00:42:03   owns this entire show [TS]

00:42:05   Slater does a very good job and it turns [TS]

00:42:08   out as we go along but you know this is [TS]

00:42:10   two parts of Elliott's personality [TS]

00:42:11   talking to each other here which is [TS]

00:42:13   which makes it that much more [TS]

00:42:14   fascinating memories of his father and [TS]

00:42:16   yeah I planned a fast in fact that he's [TS]

00:42:19   trying to you know unconsciously maybe [TS]

00:42:22   I'm probably psychoanalyzing here but [TS]

00:42:24   you know we got coney island we got the [TS]

00:42:26   shop we've got this you know this just [TS]

00:42:29   the fact that he's trying to obviously [TS]

00:42:30   reconcile something kind of unreconciled [TS]

00:42:32   little with the past and we really see I [TS]

00:42:35   feel like I don't know this my [TS]

00:42:36   criminology but I think you can see that [TS]

00:42:38   played out in so many different ways and [TS]

00:42:40   when is it that we get to the mr. Oh [TS]

00:42:43   yeah number nine oh god that was a good [TS]

00:42:45   one I thought that was incredibly moving [TS]

00:42:48   and number 9 was just was just amazing [TS]

00:42:51   right when he actually we see him with [TS]

00:42:53   his his his actual dad is dad and all [TS]

00:42:56   the all the ads for was in 1994 yeah i [TS]

00:43:00   like um the previous episode I mean this [TS]

00:43:03   is the moment where we realize be long [TS]

00:43:05   we're workin workin for ya so it's so [TS]

00:43:07   hot so you get you get you get white [TS]

00:43:09   rose who we see and they're in a [TS]

00:43:11   completely bizarre scene where it's like [TS]

00:43:14   you will only see once at the back of [TS]

00:43:15   this like hard drive repair shop or [TS]

00:43:17   whatever fascinating that we're why I [TS]

00:43:22   expected to what we saw when he met [TS]

00:43:24   White Rose would be something unexpected [TS]

00:43:26   but i would not i would not have guessed [TS]

00:43:29   BD Wong as a woman as white rose [TS]

00:43:33   fascinating and then also the whole [TS]

00:43:36   thing with Darlene Darlene throughout [TS]

00:43:37   this is portrayed as this kind of like [TS]

00:43:39   strangely forward character like why is [TS]

00:43:42   she so but when I just watch yourself [TS]

00:43:43   familiar [TS]

00:43:44   yeah well she buddying up to Elliot he [TS]

00:43:46   like it's like get away you know you're [TS]

00:43:47   just my twitter is no recovery of from [TS]

00:43:49   Coney Island yeah she's like the kind of [TS]

00:43:51   menacing him and all of that end in [TS]

00:43:53   episode 8 we see Darlene and Angela like [TS]

00:43:58   at Dance class just talking to each [TS]

00:44:01   other just friends talking about Elliot [TS]

00:44:03   and it's just a great moment like what [TS]

00:44:04   did I just see what does that mean is [TS]

00:44:09   that is going to reveal because it's [TS]

00:44:11   like the kind of reveal that doesn't hit [TS]

00:44:12   you over the head it assumes you're [TS]

00:44:14   smart enough to know that it's a reveal [TS]

00:44:15   there's no big musical cue but it is you [TS]

00:44:17   know and i think that this true of all [TS]

00:44:20   the things that doesn't doesn't cheat if [TS]

00:44:21   you go back and watch the episodes again [TS]

00:44:23   you obviously you can look at them into [TS]

00:44:24   the kind of the same success well watch [TS]

00:44:26   it again i could anyone knowing the [TS]

00:44:27   secrets I can see all the stuff but [TS]

00:44:29   everything works into two ways just like [TS]

00:44:31   that you know like the line is said [TS]

00:44:32   we're darling at some point is like how [TS]

00:44:34   do you know where I live and I wouldn't [TS]

00:44:35   know where you [TS]

00:44:36   yeah why wouldn't you know you like [TS]

00:44:37   she's a hacker questions relook why [TS]

00:44:39   wouldn't you know it because she's your [TS]

00:44:40   sister of course she does bring that [TS]

00:44:41   works both ways totally valid neither [TS]

00:44:43   one is a cheat and but you can go back [TS]

00:44:45   and watch it and go oh okay so you have [TS]

00:44:47   to decide which meaning you you at [TS]

00:44:50   you know you can go for their and [TS]

00:44:51   they're very clever writing not like [TS]

00:44:54   when you go back and watch it doesn't [TS]

00:44:55   all fall apart doesn't lay flight still [TS]

00:44:58   everything still plays yeah the enemy [TS]

00:45:00   and the way that the way that it's [TS]

00:45:02   played the scene between LA and Darlene [TS]

00:45:03   you know it is played perfectly of their [TS]

00:45:07   success celebrating the success of [TS]

00:45:09   society and and and he leans in and it's [TS]

00:45:13   like it's the moment in the TV show [TS]

00:45:14   where you know and she sent him the [TS]

00:45:18   signals like she loves him she cares [TS]

00:45:20   about him they are very casually you [TS]

00:45:22   know close together so it's super easy [TS]

00:45:25   and and so we read into that what he [TS]

00:45:27   reads into that and that's the end that [TS]

00:45:30   if there is a big twist in this show [TS]

00:45:31   that is the one that that that moment of [TS]

00:45:34   like have you forgotten again where it's [TS]

00:45:37   all just blade bear in that moment and [TS]

00:45:39   we are like Elliot realizing that [TS]

00:45:41   everything that we've seen we completely [TS]

00:45:43   missed key facts and it's just so well [TS]

00:45:45   done that and that and that's what I [TS]

00:45:48   loved is the misdirection of having mr. [TS]

00:45:50   robot not really be there and a mutual [TS]

00:45:52   that mutual heartbreak though that's sad [TS]

00:45:55   as me it does because the sort of [TS]

00:45:56   Alzheimer's thing was like no no I [TS]

00:45:58   didn't forget i I really you know like [TS]

00:46:00   faking it right segment as fast as he [TS]

00:46:02   can because he is smart and that's [TS]

00:46:03   that's the best thing about the rest of [TS]

00:46:05   the series you always been the voice [TS]

00:46:07   overs are always sort of AA what I'm [TS]

00:46:10   going to say in the scene is what I have [TS]

00:46:11   to say to get along society but now in [TS]

00:46:13   this voiceover i'll tell you the real [TS]

00:46:15   hidden reality behind everything because [TS]

00:46:16   i'm a hacker and I packed with people [TS]

00:46:18   and I know the truth and out of those [TS]

00:46:19   guys cheating on this person with his [TS]

00:46:20   wife and I know that this person like [TS]

00:46:22   this and you know Elliot knows [TS]

00:46:24   everything about everybody and nobody [TS]

00:46:25   can hide from his all-seeing hackers I [TS]

00:46:27   but he doesn't he absolutely doesn't he [TS]

00:46:30   doesn't know really important basic [TS]

00:46:32   facts about his own life and what's [TS]

00:46:34   going on it and so that that's the best [TS]

00:46:37   trap for him because that's why you feel [TS]

00:46:39   very because of the whole rest of thing [TS]

00:46:40   he was your voice of please voiceover [TS]

00:46:42   Elliot tell me what's really going on [TS]

00:46:44   here and that's also like to i rosy and [TS]

00:46:45   for that reason because Elliot is [TS]

00:46:47   totally flustered on the timer and says [TS]

00:46:49   stupid things and does not take [TS]

00:46:51   advantage of that time in an efficient [TS]

00:46:52   manner because he's just you know he [TS]

00:46:55   kind of blows it [TS]

00:46:56   that's him sort of struggling gasping [TS]

00:46:59   for air realizing that there are powers [TS]

00:47:00   beyond his control as well [TS]

00:47:02   uh before we move on either a couple of [TS]

00:47:05   points that i wanted to i want to get [TS]

00:47:06   out at one of them is tyrell wellick and [TS]

00:47:09   his wife Joanne that why she needs her [TS]

00:47:11   own show [TS]

00:47:12   yes i would watch it Joanna show she is [TS]

00:47:14   so great that the character like that on [TS]

00:47:17   humans actually where it's like that [TS]

00:47:18   that could have been the star of the [TS]

00:47:20   show in another version of the show so [TS]

00:47:22   fascinating we meet her she is you know [TS]

00:47:25   we meet her and again subverting [TS]

00:47:26   expectation she is the the beautiful [TS]

00:47:29   pregnant wife of the hard-charging [TS]

00:47:30   executive who's this [TS]

00:47:31   do you know who is one of the key [TS]

00:47:33   technical people at a tea Corbin evil [TS]

00:47:35   Corp and very rapidly we see there we [TS]

00:47:40   see their sexual practices their bondage [TS]

00:47:42   practices that so easily and what we see [TS]

00:47:44   that they are well yeah we see that for [TS]

00:47:47   sure but also just their they're kind of [TS]

00:47:49   open collusion about wanting our [TS]

00:47:54   yes just like the house of cards kind of [TS]

00:47:56   vibe where they are exaggerated team and [TS]

00:47:59   she is kind of the leader of the [TS]

00:48:00   meanwhile yes exactly right [TS]

00:48:01   she's she's she's the one who's like no [TS]

00:48:03   you gotta do this you gotta do that they [TS]

00:48:05   speak Swedish to each other which is [TS]

00:48:07   also just another there's just so many [TS]

00:48:08   little details in there that they don't [TS]

00:48:10   need the details but the details are all [TS]

00:48:12   interesting and and suffered sort of [TS]

00:48:15   like what you'd expect if you like you [TS]

00:48:17   don't need to give me the details I can [TS]

00:48:18   make some assumptions about this couple [TS]

00:48:19   no you cannot yeah and it's not like [TS]

00:48:23   slide darth vader and provide because [TS]

00:48:25   Tyrell is so shown to be so macchiavelli [TS]

00:48:28   and doing all these things but then you [TS]

00:48:29   realize the power behind the throne like [TS]

00:48:31   and she like it's like a contest [TS]

00:48:33   what will Tyrell do to further his aims [TS]

00:48:36   he will do lots of things you don't like [TS]

00:48:38   is that going after the receptionist and [TS]

00:48:41   you know having sex with them like is [TS]

00:48:42   that is something that he actually [TS]

00:48:43   enjoys or something he's willing to do [TS]

00:48:45   to get ahead you don't even know what [TS]

00:48:47   will she do with two to make sure to [TS]

00:48:49   keep this family together like old into [TS]

00:48:51   the fork that you wouldn't help possibly [TS]

00:48:53   it's like and it's almost like they're [TS]

00:48:56   all one-upping each other but in the end [TS]

00:48:57   of their interpersonal moments she makes [TS]

00:49:00   demands of him [TS]

00:49:01   and he kind of cracks under the pressure [TS]

00:49:03   and doesn't follow the plan and ends up [TS]

00:49:06   doing something that you probably [TS]

00:49:07   shouldn't have on the roof of the [TS]

00:49:08   building yes and/or he's fault he likee [TS]

00:49:13   unless he's less able to handle the [TS]

00:49:14   strain maybe he's under more pressure as [TS]

00:49:16   well because she's at home all day but [TS]

00:49:18   you know she's the emperor in the [TS]

00:49:20   situation he's Vader that's how you know [TS]

00:49:22   I hadn't thought of it this way but you [TS]

00:49:23   know it's like you know everybody [TS]

00:49:26   colleges that keep johnstone you know in [TS]

00:49:28   probook you know about improv and the [TS]

00:49:30   whole idea of improv being based on [TS]

00:49:32   status and if you think about it status [TS]

00:49:34   the exchange of status in various ways [TS]

00:49:36   is such a huge part of this where you [TS]

00:49:39   see a whole my gosh [TS]

00:49:41   the guy who ends up firing Tyrell that [TS]

00:49:43   guy at the CEO I love him I love him [TS]

00:49:46   he's as the evil CEO and he's so great [TS]

00:49:48   he's like Christopher Lee playing [TS]

00:49:50   vincent d'onofrio I just love the way I [TS]

00:49:52   love his little tix to the way that he [TS]

00:49:54   talks and but like the the way that that [TS]

00:49:58   status and power get exchanged and [TS]

00:50:02   transmogrified throughout the show are [TS]

00:50:03   fascinating to me too [TS]

00:50:04   we haven't talked at all about Elliot's [TS]

00:50:06   boss who ends up being a super [TS]

00:50:07   interesting and sympathetic character he [TS]

00:50:09   seems like such a buffoon he seems like [TS]

00:50:10   some kind of like you know bill Lumbergh [TS]

00:50:13   kind of love you know buffoon at one [TS]

00:50:15   point but he's a very sympathetic [TS]

00:50:16   character in some ways and just the way [TS]

00:50:19   that like you know from day to day these [TS]

00:50:20   power exchanges can change so much and [TS]

00:50:23   just the disproportionate you know way [TS]

00:50:27   the power gets moved around whether [TS]

00:50:28   that's Tyrells wife being the one is [TS]

00:50:30   obviously running the show or the way [TS]

00:50:31   that you know something can suddenly [TS]

00:50:33   change in like what that means to each [TS]

00:50:34   of these characters i thought it's very [TS]

00:50:36   especially as the show progresses in [TS]

00:50:37   that last night third act i think it's [TS]

00:50:39   very well done [TS]

00:50:40   yeah they might have some great [TS]

00:50:41   inflation or power inflation issues [TS]

00:50:43   because by the end you're in like eyes [TS]

00:50:45   wide shut territory and you realize for [TS]

00:50:47   angela has been suckered into like any [TS]

00:50:49   kind of know what this colby shows up at [TS]

00:50:51   her house so we were super impressed by [TS]

00:50:52   you and like is the best thing about [TS]

00:50:53   that episode for a second i think [TS]

00:50:55   everyone watching out of sort of wants [TS]

00:50:57   to believe wants to believe that they [TS]

00:50:58   really were impressed by Angela and they [TS]

00:51:00   want her to come in for a second you [TS]

00:51:01   believe it to be like you know what she [TS]

00:51:03   was impressive but no but by the end [TS]

00:51:06   like I don't know you know that that [TS]

00:51:09   final you know eyes wide shut halls of [TS]

00:51:11   power [TS]

00:51:12   whiterose [TS]

00:51:12   out of disguise or in disguise depending [TS]

00:51:14   on how they're gonna go with it and the [TS]

00:51:16   CEO and the whole speech about the the [TS]

00:51:18   fund and making it 50 times that amount [TS]

00:51:21   of money all the way to settle this case [TS]

00:51:22   and like you know why are you so calm [TS]

00:51:25   you i found that problems like this tend [TS]

00:51:28   to crack under the weight of you like [TS]

00:51:30   just great super evil speeches but where [TS]

00:51:33   do you go from there [TS]

00:51:34   I'm really worried about season 2 [TS]

00:51:35   because you've got that next echelon of [TS]

00:51:38   power in the eyes wide shot house and [TS]

00:51:40   then i'm not sure you can go up any [TS]

00:51:41   farther from there and I would almost be [TS]

00:51:43   happier if you had someone involved in [TS]

00:51:45   there so that we could say that what we [TS]

00:51:47   saw in that final scene was also [TS]

00:51:49   unreliable but Elliot wasn't involved [TS]

00:51:51   there so i think we have to take all [TS]

00:51:52   that is kind of face value and that it [TS]

00:51:55   kind of is more pros and it's a little [TS]

00:51:57   i'm sorry what scene is that where where [TS]

00:52:00   the white rose or there's a there's a [TS]

00:52:02   mansion where all of the evil leaders of [TS]

00:52:05   the world the Illuminati mean that guy's [TS]

00:52:08   basing house [TS]

00:52:08   yeah and that's where that's where white [TS]

00:52:11   rose and the CEO of of evil Corp have a [TS]

00:52:15   drink like a black bolt and tired and by [TS]

00:52:18   the way evil evil corporate sand runs [TS]

00:52:19   logos and that is my dream it up and [TS]

00:52:22   Ron's ya like a sister to my other ankle [TS]

00:52:24   i wanted to mention a couple of [TS]

00:52:25   characters in the chatroom we they [TS]

00:52:28   mentioned and I think this is absolutely [TS]

00:52:29   right [TS]

00:52:30   in some ways that the person you really [TS]

00:52:31   feel sorry for all this is a is gideon [TS]

00:52:34   goddard who's the CEO of all safe [TS]

00:52:36   who is you-know-who seems like a [TS]

00:52:38   perfectly nice guy and you know it flies [TS]

00:52:40   lay down on the jet and he's you know we [TS]

00:52:43   meet we meet his husband and and they're [TS]

00:52:45   there they're very nice and all that end [TS]

00:52:48   oh my god his business is completely [TS]

00:52:50   destroyed it's on it and somebody it [TS]

00:52:52   seems pretty resilient i thought you had [TS]

00:52:53   a business after the first disaster but [TS]

00:52:55   it still hangs on like the thing is he's [TS]

00:52:57   not played as a dummy you know he's [TS]

00:53:00   smart he's investigating server cs30 [TS]

00:53:02   like he's so close [TS]

00:53:03   he's really close he just doesn't he's [TS]

00:53:05   not willing to go [TS]

00:53:07   he's too nice of a person to go the next [TS]

00:53:08   step to realize first always but he's [TS]

00:53:10   also he's also that guy where like he [TS]

00:53:13   becomes increasingly sympathetic because [TS]

00:53:15   he's the business guy like maybe he [TS]

00:53:17   knows the business of we know of the of [TS]

00:53:19   what people are doing a little bit [TS]

00:53:20   obviously he's a smart cookie but like [TS]

00:53:23   he also has to maintain their [TS]

00:53:24   relationships [TS]

00:53:25   and the appearances and that scene where [TS]

00:53:28   his the CFO is meeting with him is just [TS]

00:53:32   so brutal you know where he's obviously [TS]

00:53:34   got this cognitive dissonance of [TS]

00:53:35   thinking like it's okay we can still [TS]

00:53:36   love you pull this out it's not going to [TS]

00:53:38   be okay with that was awful so hard to [TS]

00:53:40   watch it so clearly too nice to Succeed [TS]

00:53:43   in Business in the world of this [TS]

00:53:44   television show because everyone else is [TS]

00:53:46   getting ahead is not as concerned about [TS]

00:53:49   other people as he is and you know just [TS]

00:53:51   yeah we should diversify shouldn't have [TS]

00:53:53   radio presenter his business going to be [TS]

00:53:55   able courthouses biggest things together [TS]

00:53:57   you get something like you to stop [TS]

00:53:59   shakin you should consult John he [TS]

00:54:01   couldn't say no to evil Corp and then he [TS]

00:54:03   got into deep and the other character i [TS]

00:54:05   want to mention it is glory rubens [TS]

00:54:07   character the psychiatrist just because [TS]

00:54:08   I feel I feel like early on in the [TS]

00:54:10   season she's used really interestingly [TS]

00:54:12   and you know Elliot is is checking up on [TS]

00:54:14   her boyfriend and revealing him to be a [TS]

00:54:16   fraud and all this stuff and we see her [TS]

00:54:18   in one scene at the end I feel like her [TS]

00:54:20   character is a little bit strange in the [TS]

00:54:21   sense that we need to have her to know [TS]

00:54:23   that Elliot is sort of like under [TS]

00:54:25   treatment but I don't know I feel like [TS]

00:54:29   she kind of didn't get used enough [TS]

00:54:31   no she's she becomes the cipher in a lot [TS]

00:54:34   of ways there wasn't enough room to to [TS]

00:54:36   have her be more than what she not [TS]

00:54:37   enough room [TS]

00:54:38   I know that's right at all well I better [TS]

00:54:39   think the show is smart and keeping [TS]

00:54:41   people in reserve like various still out [TS]

00:54:43   there [TS]

00:54:44   yes I and she's still I think she's [TS]

00:54:46   important to have maybe not again maybe [TS]

00:54:47   not the sopranos where she's going to be [TS]

00:54:49   like a thread through the entire thing [TS]

00:54:51   but it's an eye I really love that [TS]

00:54:52   actress and I i love her character you [TS]

00:54:55   know shouldn't have much to go on you [TS]

00:54:56   see that she is a human person she does [TS]

00:54:59   mean well she does have her own quirks [TS]

00:55:02   and she's trying to do the right thing [TS]

00:55:04   but she is not succeeding because she [TS]

00:55:06   doesn't have all the information [TS]

00:55:07   yeah I feel like season to think clearly [TS]

00:55:10   Elliott needs psychological help [TS]

00:55:12   right so perhaps we'll see that someone [TS]

00:55:14   and she's and she's not she's good at [TS]

00:55:17   her job like she's trying to get through [TS]

00:55:19   to it she's trying to get but just you [TS]

00:55:21   know it's going to be it's going to be [TS]

00:55:23   difficult and it's interesting that she [TS]

00:55:26   had you know this is another problem [TS]

00:55:27   that she has like kind of an adversarial [TS]

00:55:30   relationship but also that you know that [TS]

00:55:31   they can get subtracted Sopranos a plot [TS]

00:55:34   line with the hole [TS]

00:55:36   dr. Melfi and and what happens to her [TS]

00:55:40   and what time's your browser does it [TS]

00:55:42   doesn't do about it in the same you this [TS]

00:55:44   is all small stakes version of that with [TS]

00:55:47   Elliot interfering in her life in ways [TS]

00:55:49   that she doesn't appreciate but does [TS]

00:55:51   appreciate but how she's gonna deal with [TS]

00:55:53   that not a lot of it and this season but [TS]

00:55:55   that is a place that is well you can go [TS]

00:55:57   back to in season 2 to enrich both of [TS]

00:55:59   the characters and I think that that [TS]

00:56:01   thread in that relationship will also [TS]

00:56:03   have an archive will have to end [TS]

00:56:04   somewhere probably badly for most people [TS]

00:56:06   but she also has an important i think [TS]

00:56:07   she has an important role in this season [TS]

00:56:10   even if she is kind of a cipher which is [TS]

00:56:12   that you know this show is to a large [TS]

00:56:14   extent about the walls that we put up [TS]

00:56:18   about things and the ways that we decide [TS]

00:56:20   like who's in charge or that we decide [TS]

00:56:22   you know for that matter like you know [TS]

00:56:24   what constitutes the money and the [TS]

00:56:25   credit that we have and like all of [TS]

00:56:26   these paper walls to constitute our [TS]

00:56:28   society and I think in a kind of more [TS]

00:56:32   picturesque way she represents like the [TS]

00:56:35   the bulwark against madness right in [TS]

00:56:37   some ways like she's the one she's the [TS]

00:56:38   one who's gonna help Elliot is obviously [TS]

00:56:40   this very troubled guy she obviously [TS]

00:56:41   cares about him but feels a certain [TS]

00:56:42   responsibility to make sure he doesn't [TS]

00:56:44   you screw up [TS]

00:56:45   she's got to be something like a parent [TS]

00:56:47   in some ways but also a professional and [TS]

00:56:49   when he does the big reveal of [TS]

00:56:51   everything he knows about her and what [TS]

00:56:52   kind of porn she's been looking at like [TS]

00:56:54   it's just it's just yet another one of [TS]

00:56:55   these paper walls being torn down and I [TS]

00:56:58   think she does a really great job at [TS]

00:56:59   characterizing what that would feel like [TS]

00:57:01   you know to to be like one of those big [TS]

00:57:04   heads on a screen and Big Brother and [TS]

00:57:05   suddenly be brought right back down to [TS]

00:57:08   human or subhuman sighs and feel [TS]

00:57:10   incredibly vulnerable which is all she [TS]

00:57:11   actually keep your chin up through it [TS]

00:57:13   like she manages to choose not going to [TS]

00:57:15   let it bring her all the way down [TS]

00:57:17   she's going to maintain her composure [TS]

00:57:19   and at the best degree possible in that [TS]

00:57:21   situation but I mean but she is but like [TS]

00:57:24   all of these systems now she is shown to [TS]

00:57:26   be even as she is a source of you know [TS]

00:57:29   gosh stuff like medications stuff like [TS]

00:57:31   deciding like what you can sign off on [TS]

00:57:32   in terms of what Elliot no can do you [TS]

00:57:35   know she is she represents you know the [TS]

00:57:37   system in that way and when she is shown [TS]

00:57:39   to be that vulnerable it's I think it's [TS]

00:57:42   an echo of the same kind of thing that's [TS]

00:57:43   happening with showing that these big [TS]

00:57:45   systems that protect our money in our [TS]

00:57:46   credit now [TS]

00:57:47   are you know society and law are are [TS]

00:57:49   just as vulnerable and I thought that [TS]

00:57:51   was well done and i would love to see [TS]

00:57:52   her used again and more in the future [TS]

00:57:54   because i love that actress what I seen [TS]

00:57:56   her on what else you are not you know [TS]

00:57:59   i'm talking about a little technical [TS]

00:58:00   stuff that's just a few things are so in [TS]

00:58:03   the first episode was just kind of a [TS]

00:58:04   shame they get I think the worst [TS]

00:58:06   technical seen out there were Tyrell [TS]

00:58:08   talk to Elliot OIC you're running KDE [TS]

00:58:10   run know myself that's a comprehension [TS]

00:58:12   that would never take place between two [TS]

00:58:14   people who know anything about computers [TS]

00:58:15   never took place between one person who [TS]

00:58:17   doesn't know one person who does elliot [TS]

00:58:19   with think terrorists why would that [TS]

00:58:21   never happen because that's like it's [TS]

00:58:23   not the type of thing it's it's like two [TS]

00:58:25   cargo is going all I see you have black [TS]

00:58:27   wheels on your car might have treads [TS]

00:58:28   years I'm friends now you have [TS]

00:58:30   Michelin's i have like it's just it's [TS]

00:58:32   not at the level [TS]

00:58:33   hi Katie vs no yeah those are your [TS]

00:58:36   things but two people to people who know [TS]

00:58:40   a lot about cars are going to talk about [TS]

00:58:42   something like if you're trying to [TS]

00:58:44   impress somebody like was Elvis's and [TS]

00:58:47   see mr McLeod Tyrell is trying to [TS]

00:58:48   impress Elliot with his knowledge to [TS]

00:58:50   show that hey I'm I'm like you you [TS]

00:58:53   wouldn't go for something that sort of [TS]

00:58:55   like basic and boring you would try to [TS]

00:58:58   find something obscure but the problem [TS]

00:59:00   is that seemed to someplace to go for [TS]

00:59:01   something obscure because the audience [TS]

00:59:03   knows doesn't know anything about this [TS]

00:59:04   so they have to do what they did which I [TS]

00:59:06   don't think really works for people who [TS]

00:59:08   don't know but it just sounds like [TS]

00:59:09   generation for people who do know it's [TS]

00:59:10   like neither one would be impressed by [TS]

00:59:12   this exchange and it's silly and it's [TS]

00:59:14   embarrassing it's kind of creatures [TS]

00:59:16   doesn't matter power through it that's [TS]

00:59:17   you know you shouldn't be listening this [TS]

00:59:18   anyway they haven't seen the series but [TS]

00:59:20   i think it's this fine everything else [TS]

00:59:22   they do they try to keep a distance from [TS]

00:59:24   which is a good idea like in broad terms [TS]

00:59:27   they want to say haha [TS]

00:59:30   although they have Christmas later so [TS]

00:59:31   mall where instead of malware which [TS]

00:59:33   really bothered me anyway it's only get [TS]

00:59:36   someone in there to tell me how to [TS]

00:59:38   pronounce words but they basically say [TS]

00:59:39   is there a raspberry pi to take over the [TS]

00:59:42   league they heard of raspberries high [TS]

00:59:44   they notice it and you know they just [TS]

00:59:45   it's funny every weekend with my [TS]

00:59:48   blinkers went off a little bit on the [TS]

00:59:49   whole like hvac thing like someone [TS]

00:59:51   something that felt a little bit like a [TS]

00:59:53   stretch without stretching on [TS]

00:59:54   yeah well I made all of it is a stretch [TS]

00:59:56   all the stretch that they could they [TS]

00:59:57   could plan this but like they don't they [TS]

00:59:57   could plan this but like they don't they [TS]

01:00:00   stay far enough away they say this is [TS]

01:00:02   our plan in broad strokes raise the [TS]

01:00:04   thermostat damage the tapes that already [TS]

01:00:06   is kind of problem most fantastical [TS]

01:00:08   because talk about a slow-moving [TS]

01:00:09   disaster that can be averted that is [TS]

01:00:10   totally one of the right but can you [TS]

01:00:13   know what as you know internet as [TS]

01:00:16   thermostat type stuff and [TS]

01:00:18   internet-connected things become real [TS]

01:00:19   like that's a real thing like microsoft [TS]

01:00:20   campus has all computer-controlled thing [TS]

01:00:22   controlling the the temperature of all [TS]

01:00:24   the buildings and once you become [TS]

01:00:25   network connect you can get hacked they [TS]

01:00:27   stay just far enough away to say it's [TS]

01:00:29   possible that you can get into this and [TS]

01:00:31   like the hospital IT department the [TS]

01:00:33   silly guy and everything running windows [TS]

01:00:35   98 dad that's you know I mean like it [TS]

01:00:37   everything they do could be done and [TS]

01:00:40   you're supposedly these people are [TS]

01:00:41   amazingly talented and you don't see how [TS]

01:00:43   much time they invest it could be like [TS]

01:00:44   well I guess the times that we didn't [TS]

01:00:45   say they were working on this for weeks [TS]

01:00:46   doing all this research or whatever so I [TS]

01:00:49   think it all hangs together [TS]

01:00:51   I'm just glad that they don't feel the [TS]

01:00:53   need to have long drawn-out scenes where [TS]

01:00:55   they have a bunch of proper announcer [TS]

01:00:57   computers that the character spirit each [TS]

01:00:58   other because they don't they just say [TS]

01:00:59   did you take over the thing with the [TS]

01:01:01   thing [TS]

01:01:01   yeah I did the thing with the thing [TS]

01:01:02   alright fine good that's you know plot [TS]

01:01:04   is moving forward now don't need to try [TS]

01:01:06   to impress the audience with the the [TS]

01:01:09   technical skills but little bit [TS]

01:01:11   cringe-inducing it especially early i [TS]

01:01:12   think as the show gets going you notice [TS]

01:01:15   it less and they talk about a lesson [TS]

01:01:16   that's good [TS]

01:01:17   alright let's move on to humans which is [TS]

01:01:22   about robots a show about robots not mr. [TS]

01:01:24   roboto about humans is it to show by [TS]

01:01:26   robots is a i-don't-know-what with [TS]

01:01:28   Nathan [TS]

01:01:30   channel 4 in the UK which we we know [TS]

01:01:35   here at the comfortable officially that [TS]

01:01:36   would be bc general door and on AMC [TS]

01:01:41   based on a Swedish series called real [TS]

01:01:44   humans which i haven't seen by the [TS]

01:01:46   swedish so tyrell wellick and his wife [TS]

01:01:48   can watch it and understand it eight [TS]

01:01:52   episodes I the science fictional premise [TS]

01:01:55   it is a world very much like today [TS]

01:01:57   except that there are robots that look [TS]

01:02:00   like humans but are artificially [TS]

01:02:01   intelligent creatures that are used as [TS]

01:02:04   servants and healthcare workers and [TS]

01:02:07   various other things throughout the [TS]

01:02:08   world and we meet a family who is uh who [TS]

01:02:12   has just taken the husband basically [TS]

01:02:14   goes and buys a synth as they're called [TS]

01:02:17   to work for their family and and cook [TS]

01:02:19   and clean and take care of their kids [TS]

01:02:20   and things like that it brings it home [TS]

01:02:22   and there's some tension with the wife [TS]

01:02:23   the wife has been traveling on business [TS]

01:02:25   trips and he's frustrated that he [TS]

01:02:27   doesn't have help around the house so he [TS]

01:02:29   goes and buys a refurb it turns out sent [TS]

01:02:32   and quite seriously refurbished and uh [TS]

01:02:36   thatthat's a the story of the story of [TS]

01:02:40   humans is is a question about who are [TS]

01:02:43   these sense and are are some of them [TS]

01:02:46   perhaps becoming sentient and what would [TS]

01:02:48   that mean for this worker class or slave [TS]

01:02:51   class that has been created the people [TS]

01:02:53   now rely on and all with English accent [TS]

01:02:55   except for William Hurt who is professor [TS]

01:02:58   hobby he does not something please [TS]

01:03:00   William Hurt because he's williamsburg [TS]

01:03:01   so I I i really like humans [TS]

01:03:05   I didn't like it as much as mr. but i [TS]

01:03:07   really liked it and one of the things I [TS]

01:03:08   liked about it is that it felt very much [TS]

01:03:10   like a classic science fiction novel to [TS]

01:03:11   me it felt like what if what if we live [TS]

01:03:14   in a world where we had these things and [TS]

01:03:16   they took care of us and then it turned [TS]

01:03:18   out that they were that they were sent [TS]

01:03:19   in or they became sentient and and now [TS]

01:03:21   they're a slave class and what does that [TS]

01:03:23   mean and do we hunt them do we kill them [TS]

01:03:25   do we give them their their freedom [TS]

01:03:27   what does it all mean and what are the [TS]

01:03:28   societal impacts on having having these [TS]

01:03:30   human form servants around even if they [TS]

01:03:32   are becoming sent here what it what are [TS]

01:03:34   the societal impacts and and as I [TS]

01:03:36   watched I felt like over the eight [TS]

01:03:38   episodes that it really did a good job [TS]

01:03:39   of sort of exploring all those things in [TS]

01:03:41   a classic science fiction now [TS]

01:03:43   all kind of way and that so I i like [TS]

01:03:46   that plus i got to recognize like [TS]

01:03:47   everybody from what doctor who episode [TS]

01:03:49   they were in a kinder gentler way I felt [TS]

01:03:52   like this show is a very gentle maybe [TS]

01:03:54   you know I don't watch enough TV to know [TS]

01:03:56   if this is part of the thing but it was [TS]

01:03:58   it's the people under nice [TS]

01:04:00   it's not like gritty and and gory and [TS]

01:04:03   you know like right [TS]

01:04:05   it felt very gentle felt like a very [TS]

01:04:06   gentle sci-fi where they're going to [TS]

01:04:09   take their time with the premise they're [TS]

01:04:10   gonna have people give each other [TS]

01:04:12   meaningful looks and have discussions [TS]

01:04:14   about things and dramatic things will [TS]

01:04:16   happen but it's not overblown and so I [TS]

01:04:18   felt it was you know it was it was [TS]

01:04:20   relaxing and it was interesting and it's [TS]

01:04:22   the kind of show that I don't think we [TS]

01:04:24   get much around here because we have [TS]

01:04:25   sci-fi around here it has to be like you [TS]

01:04:28   know aliens and spaceships and you know [TS]

01:04:31   Stargate or whatever and this was much [TS]

01:04:33   more of a lb relax British paste human [TS]

01:04:37   drama that just happened to involve [TS]

01:04:39   robots and in the same way that that mr. [TS]

01:04:42   robot doesn't spend a lot of time [TS]

01:04:44   delving into the details we don't really [TS]

01:04:46   care about the details of of the sense [TS]

01:04:48   that much we care about the family that [TS]

01:04:50   hasn't yet we eventually care about the [TS]

01:04:52   sense that that have you know family [TS]

01:04:53   have gained have gained consciousness [TS]

01:04:56   ah and everything else like you know is [TS]

01:04:59   even the whole like anti-synth movement [TS]

01:05:02   that's there in the background and it's [TS]

01:05:03   a threat or whatever but that's not what [TS]

01:05:05   the show is about this is another like [TS]

01:05:06   mr. robot it is a character drama where [TS]

01:05:09   it did it hinges entirely on you care [TS]

01:05:12   about the characters in this very small [TS]

01:05:13   story in the grand scheme of things and [TS]

01:05:15   that's the end as i mentioned it's the [TS]

01:05:17   two families and that becomes very clear [TS]

01:05:19   in the last episode I guess we should [TS]

01:05:22   fire off another spoiler horn pretty [TS]

01:05:24   soon because there are some more details [TS]

01:05:26   here but but suffice it to say I you [TS]

01:05:29   know I think it's worth again watching [TS]

01:05:30   episode 1 of humans and seeing what you [TS]

01:05:32   get out of it is gentle and I like that [TS]

01:05:34   about it john you know it's not that [TS]

01:05:36   there aren't kind of like good guys and [TS]

01:05:38   bad guys and people who behave badly but [TS]

01:05:40   i know i actually asked myself at [TS]

01:05:42   several points while I was watching it [TS]

01:05:43   is am I really watching a story that's [TS]

01:05:45   about a robot uprising was gonna kill [TS]

01:05:47   all the humans off because it doesn't [TS]

01:05:48   feel like that it could be that but it [TS]

01:05:50   doesn't feel like that it feels like [TS]

01:05:52   again like this is a more thoughtful [TS]

01:05:54   story about what does it mean [TS]

01:05:56   I mean you know again what does it mean [TS]

01:05:58   that the sensor there in at all what [TS]

01:06:00   does it mean for the the relationship of [TS]

01:06:02   the end of the husband and wife in the [TS]

01:06:05   family because it is driving them apart [TS]

01:06:08   or are they drifting apart anyway what [TS]

01:06:11   does it mean for their relationships [TS]

01:06:12   with their children [TS]

01:06:13   what is the children's relationship with [TS]

01:06:15   the synth and and is it real or not [TS]

01:06:18   all of that is in there what does it [TS]

01:06:19   mean for society at large and then you [TS]

01:06:21   throw in this other aspect which is 0 [TS]

01:06:23   and William Hurt story right which is [TS]

01:06:24   very sad very sad and and sweet sweet [TS]

01:06:28   it's a bittersweet story about a man [TS]

01:06:29   who's lost his wife and he had a stroke [TS]

01:06:31   and the only memories he has really of [TS]

01:06:34   his wife are the ones that his old synth [TS]

01:06:36   has of his dead wife that's that's my [TS]

01:06:39   favorite thread [TS]

01:06:40   it's just so beautiful so it's not about [TS]

01:06:42   like it could be about a robot uprising [TS]

01:06:43   but it's not really i just want to say [TS]

01:06:46   one more thing before the horn which is [TS]

01:06:48   that I also like the fact i mean i don't [TS]

01:06:51   make this sound like you know [TS]

01:06:52   masterpiece theater or something [TS]

01:06:54   it's it's a little slow not slow it's [TS]

01:07:00   not very quick paced at first all I will [TS]

01:07:03   say is this if you like the first [TS]

01:07:04   episode or two I want to say just stick [TS]

01:07:07   with it because yeah maybe in probably [TS]

01:07:10   quickly the story really picks up [TS]

01:07:13   no no I would say I'm I don't say this [TS]

01:07:15   about every show every show maybe should [TS]

01:07:16   be like this but it's not true of every [TS]

01:07:18   show every episode is better up until [TS]

01:07:21   maybe the last episode episode is very [TS]

01:07:24   frustrating but that's ok and the rear [TS]

01:07:28   so there's there's one episode i think [TS]

01:07:29   it's episode 6 is the one that left me [TS]

01:07:32   in tears twice but i will say stick with [TS]

01:07:35   it because it is it's a lot of [TS]

01:07:37   world-building storytelling and so forth [TS]

01:07:39   but you know if you enjoy it it's it's [TS]

01:07:41   an enjoyable show to watch just because [TS]

01:07:42   it's beautifully done it looks great but [TS]

01:07:44   i would just say like don't worry like [TS]

01:07:46   there's a lot more story to come in the [TS]

01:07:48   story really picks up but its a spoiler [TS]

01:07:50   but like a lot happens in one episode it [TS]

01:07:53   which is I think very rewarding and if [TS]

01:07:56   you end up liking the first couple [TS]

01:07:57   episodes [TS]

01:07:58   don't worry it's not all that [TS]

01:08:00   glacial it does it does pickup and a lot [TS]

01:08:04   of story happens and a lot of action [TS]

01:08:05   happens so my only ambition before the [TS]

01:08:07   horn is like you know if you like it [TS]

01:08:09   stick with it [TS]

01:08:10   yeah what the the thing that struck me [TS]

01:08:12   when I first heard about it it reminded [TS]

01:08:14   me of Ray Bradbury's i sing the body [TS]

01:08:17   electric which was originally a Twilight [TS]

01:08:20   Zone script that he wrote and then he [TS]

01:08:22   turned it into a short story and it's [TS]

01:08:24   it's a similar concept it's about [TS]

01:08:26   children who get a written android [TS]

01:08:29   grandmother who takes care of them and [TS]

01:08:32   it's a very similar setup but this is so [TS]

01:08:35   much better and much more well thought [TS]

01:08:38   out about what that kind of society [TS]

01:08:40   would involve so if if you like that one [TS]

01:08:44   which is not a great twilight zone or if [TS]

01:08:46   you like the story this is a really good [TS]

01:08:49   version of that kind of story now maybe [TS]

01:08:53   that's what i was thinking of about my [TS]

01:08:54   classic sci-fi feel like it doesn't feel [TS]

01:08:56   like an old story but it does feel like [TS]

01:08:58   it's doing what kind of we think of as [TS]

01:09:01   classic sci-fi does in its in in what [TS]

01:09:03   it's exploring and right it's um it's [TS]

01:09:05   thank you i instead of you know guns [TS]

01:09:08   going off and ships and and robots [TS]

01:09:10   weight has been lots but what I like i [TS]

01:09:13   had a story where you know it's too kind [TS]

01:09:15   of like a parallel universe where like [TS]

01:09:18   pretty much everything is the same mix [TS]

01:09:20   for this one thing and that has [TS]

01:09:21   consequently got smart phones they yeah [TS]

01:09:23   they got you with no likes gathers no [TS]

01:09:25   rocket cars or anything they're driving [TS]

01:09:27   SUVs or minivans but yes stick with it [TS]

01:09:30   that's the only thing [TS]

01:09:31   alright let's fire off a spoiler on for [TS]

01:09:33   humans [TS]

01:09:38   so soft physically pull them again man [TS]

01:09:43   god that's so obviously an actual woman [TS]

01:09:45   is not a robot [TS]

01:09:47   god I i wanted to mention to so family [TS]

01:09:51   by the end it's very clear that we are [TS]

01:09:53   watching two families there's a will [TS]

01:09:55   there's a sense family and human family [TS]

01:09:56   and the end there those wonderful we're [TS]

01:09:58   watching and kind of watching for [TS]

01:10:00   families [TS]

01:10:00   well yeah I mean defendant at the end [TS]

01:10:02   you get the two families in the house [TS]

01:10:03   together basically determining the fate [TS]

01:10:05   of the world which i kinda like that [TS]

01:10:06   there's the that all the sensor together [TS]

01:10:08   who are the children of the creator of [TS]

01:10:10   the intelligence sense and you've got [TS]

01:10:12   the the the Hawkins family and they're [TS]

01:10:15   all together and they've sort of got [TS]

01:10:17   this uneasy kind of thing and I really [TS]

01:10:18   like that that you know these are the [TS]

01:10:20   brothers and sisters these children of [TS]

01:10:24   of of the original creator that is a [TS]

01:10:28   David Elster right I'll i really like [TS]

01:10:30   that including including his son who is [TS]

01:10:32   sort of part [TS]

01:10:33   synth part human which is also pretty [TS]

01:10:35   cool i I just I really liked all that [TS]

01:10:38   there is a big twist in this which is [TS]

01:10:39   that there's a police detective who is [TS]

01:10:41   actually like beef [TS]

01:10:43   it's like a missing Cylon from [TS]

01:10:44   battlestar galactica yeah I love that [TS]

01:10:46   reveal of all the ways to reveal that [TS]

01:10:48   the way home my god that was so doctor [TS]

01:10:50   who when she pulls out the wine balloon [TS]

01:10:52   yeah I'm like hidin it was so freaky [TS]

01:10:55   she's drunk wine and you think well [TS]

01:10:57   she's got to be human because she's [TS]

01:10:58   drinking wine with her partner I was [TS]

01:10:59   like you gotta be him as a price that [TS]

01:11:01   every time she was on camera they did [TS]

01:11:03   the makeup people to put that scar on [TS]

01:11:05   her neck right and so it's like you know [TS]

01:11:07   she wouldn't have a scarf she was a [TS]

01:11:09   Cylon a replicant whatever you want to [TS]

01:11:11   do with into things at the end up end of [TS]

01:11:13   a long day trying to get a bag with all [TS]

01:11:16   the food that she's pretended to eat and [TS]

01:11:18   drink and then she plugs in crazy stuff [TS]

01:11:22   crazy stuff so I love the daughter in [TS]

01:11:24   this i love Maddie Maddie in this shit [TS]

01:11:27   again let this what i was saying earlier [TS]

01:11:28   she could be the star of the show and [TS]

01:11:30   she's not but she's great and she's got [TS]

01:11:33   like she's gonna figure out what's going [TS]

01:11:35   on with the sin that they got which you [TS]

01:11:37   know the the teenage son wants to touch [TS]

01:11:39   your boobs and the father turns on the [TS]

01:11:40   downloadable content to enable sex mode [TS]

01:11:43   and she just wants to like the hacker [TS]

01:11:47   she wants to like and she's like what [TS]

01:11:49   stressed about the future of the world [TS]

01:11:50   is like what's the point study [TS]

01:11:51   because the synthesis going to be able [TS]

01:11:52   to be a surgeon in 10 minutes like she's [TS]

01:11:54   ahead of she's like the the heavyset [TS]

01:11:57   pimply kid from fear the walking dead [TS]

01:11:59   she's ahead of everyone else on the show [TS]

01:12:00   realizing guys don't you realize what [TS]

01:12:02   this means if we continue down this path [TS]

01:12:03   with these since I it's going to be a [TS]

01:12:05   problem is maybe not for the parents [TS]

01:12:07   generation they just see it as like oh [TS]

01:12:08   it's helpful thing for you to have in [TS]

01:12:10   the house or you know it's a sex toy or [TS]

01:12:11   whatever but she sees this is the end of [TS]

01:12:13   humanity and you guys are just happy [TS]

01:12:15   about it [TS]

01:12:16   yeah yeah well I like the that whole [TS]

01:12:18   question of is this is that the end of [TS]

01:12:21   humanity or night there's a lot of [TS]

01:12:23   knee-jerk reactions in the background [TS]

01:12:24   you've got the kind of worried about it [TS]

01:12:25   but i kinda like that like you know do [TS]

01:12:27   it here are we looking at well they're [TS]

01:12:30   going to replace us and they're all [TS]

01:12:31   better than us or is it more like you [TS]

01:12:33   know we've created new a new slave class [TS]

01:12:35   and we have to deal with the fact that [TS]

01:12:39   they're actually alive [TS]

01:12:41   well yeah and like not to jump to the [TS]

01:12:42   giant picture but you know it's me know [TS]

01:12:45   when you get into the the whole like [TS]

01:12:47   what automation writ large does for us [TS]

01:12:50   it ends up getting to some interesting [TS]

01:12:53   things and and I think that's where this [TS]

01:12:55   cuts to the chase fairly quickly even if [TS]

01:12:57   it is a little bit slow paced which is [TS]

01:12:59   first of all like what we think like you [TS]

01:13:00   know work in some ways gives us meaning [TS]

01:13:01   like the things that we do the way that [TS]

01:13:03   we spend our day really matters the way [TS]

01:13:05   that we care for our children like what [TS]

01:13:07   with foods we prepare for our kids like [TS]

01:13:09   that's that's a big part of who we are [TS]

01:13:10   and I has played out with I'm sorry I [TS]

01:13:14   remember the woman's name the the wife [TS]

01:13:16   like it's I think she is she's so great [TS]

01:13:19   at portraying that not just the guilt of [TS]

01:13:21   like being the working mom is a lawyer [TS]

01:13:23   which is that whole sense of like you [TS]

01:13:25   know what if somebody can do this better [TS]

01:13:26   than I am better but you know better [TS]

01:13:28   than i can do it like that that's a [TS]

01:13:29   horrifying prospect the idea that you [TS]

01:13:31   could buy an appliance that would be a [TS]

01:13:33   better parent than you or our index you [TS]

01:13:35   could you could you could buy a robot [TS]

01:13:37   that would be a better employee than you [TS]

01:13:38   it isn't just a matter of feeling [TS]

01:13:40   frustrated that you maybe don't make the [TS]

01:13:41   same wage it's a matter of going like [TS]

01:13:43   well then what is it that makes us human [TS]

01:13:45   what is it that makes life worth doing [TS]

01:13:46   if there are appliances that can be [TS]

01:13:48   better than your daughter demands that [TS]

01:13:50   that that the robot read the story to [TS]

01:13:53   her instead so female of like our kids [TS]

01:13:55   male of our ipads more than us but we're [TS]

01:13:57   not threatened by the ipads because [TS]

01:13:58   they're not close enough to the uncanny [TS]

01:14:00   value right he's like well they may love [TS]

01:14:02   television more than us but it's fine on [TS]

01:14:04   the mom because once you make a [TS]

01:14:04   television shaped like a mom then it's a [TS]

01:14:06   problem then you like alright TV that's [TS]

01:14:09   an this is too close for comfort I think [TS]

01:14:11   the best one is the the wife of the [TS]

01:14:13   detective like that's the other [TS]

01:14:15   questions than it answers is like she's [TS]

01:14:17   unhappy there in their marriage she's [TS]

01:14:18   unhappy in their marriage whatever is it [TS]

01:14:21   sufficient for people to have a [TS]

01:14:24   attentive uh attractive male sex pot [TS]

01:14:30   that listens to their stories and gives [TS]

01:14:31   them nice massage and prepare some nice [TS]

01:14:33   meals as long as it that that sexpot [TS]

01:14:36   doesn't malfunction [TS]

01:14:37   she was probably pretty much okay with [TS]

01:14:39   it like that she chose that over her [TS]

01:14:41   husband because that robot was giving [TS]

01:14:44   her the attention that her husband was [TS]

01:14:45   not it was entirely dedicated to her it [TS]

01:14:48   was nice it was thoughtful carried her [TS]

01:14:50   from room to room when she was injured [TS]

01:14:51   it made her meals it gave her the [TS]

01:14:54   massages and again for the second she [TS]

01:14:55   wanted and right up until the point that [TS]

01:14:57   she installed the modifications and a [TS]

01:14:59   malfunction she was okay with that so [TS]

01:15:00   that's the other uncomfortable thing [TS]

01:15:02   thats is asking is not like in this [TS]

01:15:05   replace us with all in our children [TS]

01:15:07   whatever but like is there are they [TS]

01:15:09   better than humans and always because no [TS]

01:15:11   human like the roads don't have their [TS]

01:15:13   own needs these the non-conscious ones [TS]

01:15:15   they entirely exist to serve your needs [TS]

01:15:17   and if they can do so in a way that [TS]

01:15:19   makes you think that there's just [TS]

01:15:20   another human there who is really really [TS]

01:15:22   into you [TS]

01:15:23   how many people are okay with that but I [TS]

01:15:25   I don't think they're gonna get into X i [TS]

01:15:27   think the the the the entire show is [TS]

01:15:29   leading like if i take the show as as [TS]

01:15:31   shown in this season one the obvious [TS]

01:15:34   conclusion is that all the humans will [TS]

01:15:35   destroy all these robots it's also [TS]

01:15:37   available all ultimate form of of [TS]

01:15:38   self-absorption where you know if you're [TS]

01:15:41   like say like an introverted person with [TS]

01:15:43   lots of needs like you'd be perfectly [TS]

01:15:45   happy to have a whole bunch of the world [TS]

01:15:47   replaced by automation whether that's [TS]

01:15:49   uber or instant card or whatever it is [TS]

01:15:51   that you want there's a whole way to [TS]

01:15:52   create this world full of things that [TS]

01:15:55   will serve you and will open up your [TS]

01:15:57   time and attention in ways that you [TS]

01:15:58   never could have before that hates great [TS]

01:16:01   the roof the rest of the world becomes [TS]

01:16:02   an automaton the rest of the world loses [TS]

01:16:04   their jobs but i think this gets at [TS]

01:16:06   those like well what does that mean to [TS]

01:16:07   me like what if nobody needs me anymore [TS]

01:16:09   that's that's that's what i thought this [TS]

01:16:11   drove home is yes yes there certainly [TS]

01:16:13   think that the [TS]

01:16:13   huge issue of like what if these things [TS]

01:16:15   are more than just you know machines but [TS]

01:16:18   i also love that idea of like when we [TS]

01:16:19   feel threatened [TS]

01:16:21   not just in terms of like you know the [TS]

01:16:22   story people always want to tell on [TS]

01:16:24   planet money is like what happens when [TS]

01:16:25   robots make our t-shirts but there's [TS]

01:16:27   something deeper to that which is like [TS]

01:16:28   what if like the whole reason that I [TS]

01:16:30   think I'm valuable to the world is [TS]

01:16:32   suddenly much more economically and [TS]

01:16:34   efficiently replaced by this machine and [TS]

01:16:37   I thought they did that very well [TS]

01:16:38   you have a device I feel like it's [TS]

01:16:40   leading to like I think in season 2 [TS]

01:16:42   they're gonna have to come up with some [TS]

01:16:43   kind of conflict is right now it's clear [TS]

01:16:45   that people don't like these machines [TS]

01:16:47   like that the angry people want to smash [TS]

01:16:50   all these things and the only thing was [TS]

01:16:52   going to stop them from smashing them [TS]

01:16:53   are either other humans which I don't [TS]

01:16:55   think is going to happen or the robots [TS]

01:16:57   themselves and so far the rods that but [TS]

01:16:59   Miss cos they're only help really [TS]

01:17:00   so far the roads themselves seem too [TS]

01:17:02   passive and they're basically going to [TS]

01:17:04   get smashed up because these are not the [TS]

01:17:06   robots from the matrix this is not you [TS]

01:17:09   know the skynet that becomes conscious [TS]

01:17:11   in 20 milliseconds later decides it [TS]

01:17:13   needs to wipe out humanity these uh [TS]

01:17:15   these robots these since our conscious [TS]

01:17:19   and also have a conscience and that will [TS]

01:17:22   be their downfall [TS]

01:17:23   if they don't get their acts together [TS]

01:17:24   because it's so clear that the humans [TS]

01:17:26   are conscious and there's enough of them [TS]

01:17:28   who are mad for so many reasons taking [TS]

01:17:30   our jobs replacing us [TS]

01:17:32   I don't like that you know like Merlin [TS]

01:17:34   said replacing me in ways that I don't [TS]

01:17:36   want to be replaced and humans are [TS]

01:17:37   really good at smashing things they [TS]

01:17:38   don't like if there's an added you know [TS]

01:17:40   will kill all the Wolves will cut down [TS]

01:17:42   all the trees will pave paradise and put [TS]

01:17:45   in the parking lot and these these since [TS]

01:17:47   our doom so I don't know how they're [TS]

01:17:49   gonna resolve that because it's so I [TS]

01:17:50   mean again miss code being their only [TS]

01:17:52   hope is there one sent that finally gets [TS]

01:17:53   a clue and says we need to go to another [TS]

01:17:56   planet or destroy all humans or are they [TS]

01:17:58   going to have this sort of touchy-feely [TS]

01:17:59   we need to figure out how to get along [TS]

01:18:01   with each other and I can you can you [TS]

01:18:03   imagine can anyone imagine a planet [TS]

01:18:05   where humans and since existed reproduce [TS]

01:18:08   it similar rates and exist alongside [TS]

01:18:09   each other intermixed in society I the [TS]

01:18:12   world set up by the show does not seem [TS]

01:18:14   like it is open to that possibility if [TS]

01:18:16   the sensor conscious they're not [TS]

01:18:18   conscious seems like everyone's kind of [TS]

01:18:19   okay with it is uneasy balance but as [TS]

01:18:21   soon as the conscious that develops have [TS]

01:18:22   to be destroyed now the sense the sense [TS]

01:18:24   have all kinds of basically like what [TS]

01:18:27   governor's like know how you run a [TS]

01:18:28   u-haul van and we'll let you drive over [TS]

01:18:30   60 miles an hour right you can push the [TS]

01:18:32   accelerator accelerator down like all [TS]

01:18:34   these sense have these basic governor's [TS]

01:18:36   that prevent them from doing the things [TS]

01:18:37   that greater if we let the since do [TS]

01:18:39   everything they could do like that's a [TS]

01:18:41   whole different world now we've got a [TS]

01:18:42   world where it's all based on what since [TS]

01:18:43   10 so you're wondering it's like what [TS]

01:18:45   that would be something where there's [TS]

01:18:47   some kind of show down like a meeting [TS]

01:18:48   this person's vs humans come like why [TS]

01:18:50   would he [TS]

01:18:51   why would how can they coexist because [TS]

01:18:53   like the sense are better at everything [TS]

01:18:55   and don't have all the same problems and [TS]

01:18:58   can be presumably repaired and [TS]

01:19:00   consciousness can be transferred it's [TS]

01:19:01   like what is the role of humans on a [TS]

01:19:03   planet with with since they're there is [TS]

01:19:06   not and so and but the humans will be [TS]

01:19:08   super pissed about that right and so [TS]

01:19:10   this inherent conflict like it's not [TS]

01:19:11   like well we'll go about our lives and [TS]

01:19:13   fifty percent of the people in the city [TS]

01:19:15   or sense and fifty percent aren't and [TS]

01:19:17   you know like even just have to come to [TS]

01:19:20   an agreement about birth rates how since [TS]

01:19:22   how many nuisance are you allowed to [TS]

01:19:24   created what rate and who's going to [TS]

01:19:26   decide on that and is a democracy and [TS]

01:19:28   like I I don't see how i think the show [TS]

01:19:31   is going on a much smaller level even [TS]

01:19:32   though wants to go into the hole that [TS]

01:19:34   the larger level the small level is [TS]

01:19:36   what's more interesting but I feel like [TS]

01:19:37   inevitably this show has to end by all [TS]

01:19:40   with all since being destroyed [TS]

01:19:41   I don't know i mean i-i so going to the [TS]

01:19:43   last episode III felt like they were [TS]

01:19:45   going to a place where they were going [TS]

01:19:46   to have I was expecting kind of a bold [TS]

01:19:48   final episode where they decided to [TS]

01:19:50   basically will light up all the sense in [TS]

01:19:53   the world and give them all the code [TS]

01:19:55   that we have been into Center and then [TS]

01:19:56   it says that is the only one strategy [TS]

01:19:58   niska's got it not only turn them all to [TS]

01:20:00   sending beans but give them all a single [TS]

01:20:02   mission which is killing every human [TS]

01:20:04   life can be selfish yes right which is [TS]

01:20:06   why I love disco i love i love this guy [TS]

01:20:09   I love that you know when she's killing [TS]

01:20:11   the people who were trying to kill the [TS]

01:20:13   sense to train with the essence out and [TS]

01:20:15   and then she learns how to to play with [TS]

01:20:17   the little with little Sophie at the end [TS]

01:20:20   that was really hilarious and strange [TS]

01:20:22   and creepy but I yeah I expected that [TS]

01:20:25   into what I felt like the eight-episode [TS]

01:20:28   I felt like softened what it was going [TS]

01:20:30   to do almost like it was well aware that [TS]

01:20:32   it needed to play things out for the [TS]

01:20:34   long game and I felt there had been so [TS]

01:20:35   much dramatic tension leading up to a [TS]

01:20:37   moment where they were going to decide [TS]

01:20:39   what to do [TS]

01:20:39   you and then in episode 8 the kind of [TS]

01:20:41   like back off at like no no not yet it [TS]

01:20:43   just wanted everyone has their separate [TS]

01:20:45   agendas the the failed mommy body [TS]

01:20:47   cooperates enough to have the the the [TS]

01:20:50   final thing and then miska you know is [TS]

01:20:51   going to do this thing that she does and [TS]

01:20:53   goes her separate way kind of like she [TS]

01:20:54   did the middle of the season as well but [TS]

01:20:57   since you did it before it's like it [TS]

01:20:59   just they just put things on pause [TS]

01:21:00   because they know that during the season [TS]

01:21:02   like the end of the show i think is is [TS]

01:21:05   either you know the realized again is [TS]

01:21:07   all since you destroyed and the [TS]

01:21:09   uplifting and is all the sensor allowed [TS]

01:21:11   to become conscious but they never show [TS]

01:21:12   you what happens after that they like [TS]

01:21:14   and it goes out and all since become [TS]

01:21:16   conscious and then we fade to black [TS]

01:21:17   yeah yeah which is how I wanted to use [TS]

01:21:19   one day and was you know they make all [TS]

01:21:22   of them sent the end you know they don't [TS]

01:21:24   have a budget for the dole out since [TS]

01:21:26   human war like this one is not sure what [TS]

01:21:28   kind of budget doesn't it doesn't have [TS]

01:21:29   the right actors for well they just have [TS]

01:21:31   a month a montage of a whole bunch of [TS]

01:21:32   very nice English people who are like [TS]

01:21:35   nannies killing kids in like well i'm at [TS]

01:21:39   the bottom takes care of William Hurt is [TS]

01:21:41   already a wrecking machine makes sense [TS]

01:21:43   that someone needs to return that one [TS]

01:21:45   because it does not have a good bedside [TS]

01:21:46   know but it's someone named the era [TS]

01:21:49   that's the National Health Service body [TS]

01:21:51   I I can't help but feel that there's [TS]

01:21:53   some British come very British [TS]

01:21:55   commentary on the bureaucracy of the [TS]

01:21:57   National Health that right we're missing [TS]

01:21:59   there was more and also commentary on [TS]

01:22:02   like the removing the humanity from [TS]

01:22:04   people who need care they're damn good [TS]

01:22:06   note that he's no longer the product is [TS]

01:22:08   not the primary user that the system is [TS]

01:22:09   the primary user have I think you know [TS]

01:22:12   um I know we don't have a lot of time [TS]

01:22:13   but I mean I and this is another one [TS]

01:22:15   where I kind of grabbed me in the first [TS]

01:22:17   episode I think they did a really nice [TS]

01:22:18   job of world-building very quickly in [TS]

01:22:22   this one and I you know gosh i just i od [TS]

01:22:26   was like a big it was a hook for me like [TS]

01:22:28   I'm sentimental eminent you know that [TS]

01:22:30   kind of guy [TS]

01:22:30   there's just something so great to me [TS]

01:22:32   about this idea that you know [TS]

01:22:34   introducing this idea that you know we [TS]

01:22:37   it's not like robots are disliked we get [TS]

01:22:40   the one point when everything's going to [TS]

01:22:41   be perfect [TS]

01:22:42   no nope it's like there's all kinds of [TS]

01:22:44   problems and i just i love that the [TS]

01:22:46   whole arc of [TS]

01:22:47   you know the way that professor hobby [TS]

01:22:50   what's-his-name dr. that's an AI was [TS]

01:22:53   here in this William Hurt is worried [TS]

01:22:54   there's something so pointed to me about [TS]

01:22:57   this idea of you know it's kind of corny [TS]

01:22:59   but the idea of this guy who's had was a [TS]

01:23:01   stroke [TS]

01:23:02   yeah he had a stroke so real so he's so [TS]

01:23:04   he's lost his memories OD is his [TS]

01:23:07   outboard brain for certain memories but [TS]

01:23:10   is unreliable they're both but like [TS]

01:23:11   there's something so obvious but so [TS]

01:23:13   beautiful to me about the relationship [TS]

01:23:15   between these two broken machines but [TS]

01:23:16   the body picture of the brokencyde I [TS]

01:23:19   mean like there's something very point [TS]

01:23:21   two minutes if you ever had anybody in [TS]

01:23:22   your family with Alzheimer's you know [TS]

01:23:23   the heartbreak of the like one day out [TS]

01:23:26   of 90 when they suddenly remember [TS]

01:23:28   something extremely specific but I i [TS]

01:23:31   think there's lots of ways that could [TS]

01:23:32   get yeah it's a little mawkish but i [TS]

01:23:34   think they got it right [TS]

01:23:35   I think they really did and that for me [TS]

01:23:36   was a big emotional hook I mean I love [TS]

01:23:38   the whole thing of the busy family and [TS]

01:23:40   the slightly tuned out dumb day I god [TS]

01:23:42   what a passive aggressive move [TS]

01:23:43   how could you go out and like buy a hot [TS]

01:23:45   robot and bring out why don't know why [TS]

01:23:47   don't more understanding wife on the [TS]

01:23:49   planet was like oh I suppose I guess [TS]

01:23:52   like are you kidding me [TS]

01:23:53   well they end up giving her like I know [TS]

01:23:55   like you have to supposedly has a guilt [TS]

01:23:57   her guilty secret is that was not a [TS]

01:24:00   dream that was not as guilty of a seat [TS]

01:24:02   is expected they try very hard to give [TS]

01:24:04   to to give the reasons why he did does [TS]

01:24:09   this and she doesn't react differently [TS]

01:24:11   to it is very understanding yes you will [TS]

01:24:13   they get they give her the gift for her [TS]

01:24:14   see dark secrets and they also you know [TS]

01:24:16   they make her seem really bad at the [TS]

01:24:18   beginning was like you said you'd be [TS]

01:24:19   gone for two days and you work on for [TS]

01:24:20   five days and almost like you exactly [TS]

01:24:22   but her dark chocolate chip tried to [TS]

01:24:24   call but she did she tried but like her [TS]

01:24:27   dark secret I mean the dark secret seem [TS]

01:24:29   to be that she was out of town you know [TS]

01:24:32   to find some mean bone but the real dark [TS]

01:24:34   secret is like she's misunderstood she [TS]

01:24:37   was that she was you know she was doing [TS]

01:24:38   an emotionally difficult thing that she [TS]

01:24:40   wasn't ready to tell her husband about [TS]

01:24:42   which seems weird that like really I [TS]

01:24:43   don't understand how you wouldn't ya [TS]

01:24:45   that while you but whatever like she is [TS]

01:24:47   very sympathetic and he is kind of a [TS]

01:24:49   doof CEO kind of yes but i but I you [TS]

01:24:53   know I guess maybe like I say maybe I'm [TS]

01:24:54   just mawkish and sentimental as a person [TS]

01:24:56   but the whole thing of him [TS]

01:24:58   wanting to keep Cody and like try to [TS]

01:25:00   repair him and can get like that [TS]

01:25:02   resonated with me like we've all we've [TS]

01:25:04   all had I mean like gosh I've had [TS]

01:25:05   iphones I wanted to keep longer than [TS]

01:25:07   then then worked but like it's also just [TS]

01:25:09   very emblematic of like the fragility of [TS]

01:25:11   memory and the way that like in this [TS]

01:25:14   case that the two of them together like [TS]

01:25:15   almost make a person with a memory and I [TS]

01:25:19   thought that was that was very very [TS]

01:25:20   moving [TS]

01:25:21   I like the fact that he also was not so [TS]

01:25:23   addled that he thinks OD is like like [TS]

01:25:26   the people like no I need my reputation [TS]

01:25:28   to myself my senses my friend he knows [TS]

01:25:31   already is just a machine and I'm not a [TS]

01:25:33   very good machine and partly broken [TS]

01:25:35   machine like this he helped create them [TS]

01:25:37   he understands exactly what he is told [TS]

01:25:39   under no illusions that already has his [TS]

01:25:40   friend but he befriends OD in the same [TS]

01:25:43   way that like you know that uh [TS]

01:25:44   what's-his-name befriends Wilson on the [TS]

01:25:47   island and cast away [TS]

01:25:49   right on thanks know right everybody [TS]

01:25:51   never goes full Wilson where he thinks [TS]

01:25:53   you know he never thinks about me as a [TS]

01:25:55   person and he just understands that that [TS]

01:25:57   you know against his outboard memory is [TS]

01:25:59   his only connection to his dead wife he [TS]

01:26:02   repairs him as best he can he talk to [TS]

01:26:04   him the way you might talk to a pet [TS]

01:26:06   where you know that doesn't really [TS]

01:26:07   understand you but you have long [TS]

01:26:08   complicated conversations about your [TS]

01:26:10   dead wife with your dog your dog looks [TS]

01:26:12   at you and tilts his head [TS]

01:26:13   it's fine like it already is not even as [TS]

01:26:15   smart as your dog right but he did you [TS]

01:26:17   know it like you said it's like that [TS]

01:26:19   it's like the pair of jeans that you [TS]

01:26:20   know it but plus the involving memory so [TS]

01:26:23   I like the fact that they get into the [TS]

01:26:25   adventures again together he he should [TS]

01:26:27   have a helper bot that is more competent [TS]

01:26:29   he shouldn't be out driving in the car [TS]

01:26:31   or letting his sister is broken since [TS]

01:26:34   drive the car and then felt like he did [TS]

01:26:37   these are all very young you know he's [TS]

01:26:38   he's not making wise choices but he's an [TS]

01:26:40   old guy and this is all he's got he just [TS]

01:26:42   wants to go out for a drive in the car [TS]

01:26:44   and ends the way you expected to end and [TS]

01:26:46   that just makes them all the more [TS]

01:26:47   sympathetic but i like the fact that [TS]

01:26:48   it's not like he is the same man insane [TS]

01:26:51   world and the health services bodice is [TS]

01:26:54   trying to keep him down know he really [TS]

01:26:56   does need help at home he really does [TS]

01:26:59   also just want to put a vote in for max [TS]

01:27:01   III i love that actor [TS]

01:27:04   yeah he like Josh was just I don't know [TS]

01:27:07   maybe just he's such a handsome man with [TS]

01:27:08   such an expressive face but like [TS]

01:27:11   tumi him as the face of the empathetic [TS]

01:27:13   you know robot people because they move [TS]

01:27:15   a certain way with a certain lack of a [TS]

01:27:17   fact but max is so just naturally [TS]

01:27:19   lovable and like I he's another one [TS]

01:27:21   where you know it's my guess let's say [TS]

01:27:24   the obvious a lot of this reminded me at [TS]

01:27:26   times a blade runner and in some ways [TS]

01:27:28   some of the characters actually tracked [TS]

01:27:30   characters and later in some ways but [TS]

01:27:32   like you know I I just think there's [TS]

01:27:34   something I don't know there's just like [TS]

01:27:36   you said with John like you said like [TS]

01:27:38   you talk to a dog or yeah you realize [TS]

01:27:40   this thing is not real [TS]

01:27:41   like even though the and these people [TS]

01:27:43   are aware that they're not people but [TS]

01:27:46   that doesn't mean that they don't have [TS]

01:27:47   these these feelings I i don't know i [TS]

01:27:49   found a very affecting that was great i [TS]

01:27:51   love max yeah I really like I needed to [TS]

01:27:54   because she had to do the dual mode of [TS]

01:27:56   like show what a sense is like when it's [TS]

01:27:58   not contrast and show what it's like [TS]

01:28:00   when it is conscious and eat i think [TS]

01:28:01   that they didn't do any changes and [TS]

01:28:03   makeup i think it was all just acting [TS]

01:28:05   but you know like when she's recharging [TS]

01:28:07   the chair and a second just as I'm in [TS]

01:28:08   here and then goes back like it was [TS]

01:28:10   great to see her transition from the she [TS]

01:28:13   I think she was the best at being [TS]

01:28:14   robotic without doing the robot because [TS]

01:28:17   she was on camera a lot and she had to [TS]

01:28:19   kind of figure that out and then when [TS]

01:28:20   she becomes the regular person it's [TS]

01:28:22   almost like it's like it's not even the [TS]

01:28:23   same actress but she's not in an either [TS]

01:28:25   mode when she's in media mode but also [TS]

01:28:28   the whole thing of like you know when [TS]

01:28:30   you're kind of acclimate yourself to the [TS]

01:28:31   show through the first like maybe three [TS]

01:28:33   or four episodes i don't know if you [TS]

01:28:35   guys did this but i found myself [TS]

01:28:36   wondering like these are a eyes [TS]

01:28:38   these are extremely powerful computers [TS]

01:28:40   like what they choose to expose to the [TS]

01:28:42   family in terms of the output may you [TS]

01:28:45   wonder how much that has to do with what [TS]

01:28:46   they actually quote-unquote know like [TS]

01:28:49   obviously you see that the wife is like [TS]

01:28:50   hiding around the corner in this case [TS]

01:28:52   you know but like you know all along I [TS]

01:28:54   kept wondering like how much is she [TS]

01:28:56   assimilating that we don't know yet and [TS]

01:28:58   she has such a lack of a fact but it's [TS]

01:29:01   not it is she's not like just gonna quit [TS]

01:29:03   being a robot [TS]

01:29:04   there's something about that actress [TS]

01:29:06   just killed it at being able to do these [TS]

01:29:08   incredibly subtle things that kept you [TS]

01:29:10   on the bubble of wondering like how much [TS]

01:29:12   she knew and how much that humanity was [TS]

01:29:14   like shining through right and it was it [TS]

01:29:16   that was in story reason for that was [TS]

01:29:17   like the idea of the other conscious was [TS]

01:29:19   buried under there [TS]

01:29:20   right you know it was influencing it's [TS]

01:29:22   like you know what does she know I'm [TS]

01:29:24   scared of spiders [TS]

01:29:25   I you know just how douchey reading [TS]

01:29:28   these emotions uh how did you know that [TS]

01:29:31   i would like to read the book to Sophie [TS]

01:29:32   you don't like the whole that I that was [TS]

01:29:35   a great early part of the season because [TS]

01:29:36   you are put into the mindset of the wife [TS]

01:29:38   Laura I think her name was [TS]

01:29:40   it's a issue no Louis yeah I mean I is [TS]

01:29:43   obvious reasons why you may be jealous [TS]

01:29:45   and upset that her husband brings up [TS]

01:29:47   this you know sexpot into the house or [TS]

01:29:48   whatever right but on the other level [TS]

01:29:51   like she's doubting yourself like am I [TS]

01:29:53   just overreacting it you know app you [TS]

01:29:56   know it's like she actively undermining [TS]

01:29:58   me is she liked it yeah yeah and it like [TS]

01:30:00   is it because it the they so well [TS]

01:30:03   established the world but it's like it's [TS]

01:30:04   like wandering for toasters undermining [TS]

01:30:06   you like if these interests appliances [TS]

01:30:08   everyone everyone knows how they work [TS]

01:30:10   like the whole family knows how they can [TS]

01:30:11   hurt people they're never going to do [TS]

01:30:13   this they're never gonna do that anyway [TS]

01:30:14   here's this one that is far as she's [TS]

01:30:16   concerned and again i think is the thing [TS]

01:30:18   that would be much more common but they [TS]

01:30:20   had so firmly established the entire [TS]

01:30:21   rest of the world totally believe these [TS]

01:30:22   things are just like appliances and [TS]

01:30:24   she's the only crazy one who thinks i [TS]

01:30:26   think it's it's noticing more than and [TS]

01:30:28   it turns out it is noticing more right [TS]

01:30:30   because this is a special one or [TS]

01:30:31   whatever but in reality if we had since [TS]

01:30:33   like this everybody would think that [TS]

01:30:34   think they're since they're out to get [TS]

01:30:36   them [TS]

01:30:36   no one would allow a sexy female [TS]

01:30:38   sentence of their house like it you know [TS]

01:30:39   these are it's this is sci-fi that day [TS]

01:30:43   even getting beyond the fact that if [TS]

01:30:45   that we have technology created since [TS]

01:30:47   there'd be so many other temp [TS]

01:30:48   technological implications that it [TS]

01:30:49   wouldn't be just it's just like our [TS]

01:30:50   world but with since biggest issue if [TS]

01:30:53   you can do a scent so might you know so [TS]

01:30:55   you have to kind of carve out this it's [TS]

01:30:57   more of a fantasy scenario were like [TS]

01:30:58   take the world as it is now and add this [TS]

01:31:01   one magical thing but pretend it's not [TS]

01:31:02   magic and don't think too much about the [TS]

01:31:04   implications we won't have a smaller [TS]

01:31:06   stories you don't have the budget for [TS]

01:31:07   the human scent war [TS]

01:31:08   um if you can put all that out of your [TS]

01:31:11   mind [TS]

01:31:11   I i think the show holds together as you [TS]

01:31:15   know this it is a gentle kind of [TS]

01:31:17   fun-sized us [TS]

01:31:19   slow-paced relaxing sci-fi story that [TS]

01:31:22   that episode 1i think like I don't think [TS]

01:31:24   the series starts slow because i think [TS]

01:31:26   if you watch episode 1 and you're into [TS]

01:31:28   sci-fi you understand everything they're [TS]

01:31:30   setting up you understand your [TS]

01:31:31   attentions they're gonna set up [TS]

01:31:33   and how you may not know how it's all [TS]

01:31:34   going to evolve but so many sort of [TS]

01:31:37   pieces are put onto the board the I I [TS]

01:31:39   was just excited by the first episode I [TS]

01:31:41   wanted to see how these pieces were [TS]

01:31:42   going to move and in the end I think [TS]

01:31:44   they just kind of dump the board back [TS]

01:31:46   into the box and fold the game up and [TS]

01:31:47   said come back in season 2 anymore we [TS]

01:31:50   should talk about that humans i love the [TS]

01:31:52   little girl what's her name is Sophie [TS]

01:31:53   Sophie so adorable so cute so cute and [TS]

01:31:56   really like maybe you adorable and I [TS]

01:31:58   would watch The Adventures of you know [TS]

01:32:00   Maddie and Maddie in the sense in in [TS]

01:32:03   computer hackers sofiane miska miska [TS]

01:32:05   will be dismembering people with it with [TS]

01:32:07   with pruning shears and little girl be [TS]

01:32:09   like play dolls with me help [TS]

01:32:11   yeah I'd watch like their version of the [TS]

01:32:13   road yeah that's right that's right it's [TS]

01:32:16   a little girl in her murder violent and [TS]

01:32:18   memory be there too i would never let [TS]

01:32:20   any harm come to Sophie and they solve [TS]

01:32:22   crimes [TS]

01:32:22   I'm sorry Sophie I'm afraid I don't [TS]

01:32:24   understand the question so John are the [TS]

01:32:30   sense of human robots or not I it's [TS]

01:32:34   tough with the sense because they make [TS]

01:32:36   it seem like it's just kind of living [TS]

01:32:38   skin [TS]

01:32:38   I don't know enough about what goes on [TS]

01:32:40   inside them are they like the terminator [TS]

01:32:41   where it's just a robot with living skin [TS]

01:32:42   attached to the outside or are they [TS]

01:32:44   biological through and through with [TS]

01:32:46   mechanical enhancements and a [TS]

01:32:48   special-effects budget the show says we [TS]

01:32:51   can't tell you because all we're going [TS]

01:32:52   to show you a superficial skin with some [TS]

01:32:53   blue blood but why is there blood at all [TS]

01:32:56   and why is the blood blue I'm leaning [TS]

01:32:58   towards sidebar for these guys think [TS]

01:33:00   they're organic parts in there is i [TS]

01:33:02   can't is why else would you have I mean [TS]

01:33:04   is the blood just for the skin is like a [TS]

01:33:05   chia pet where it's just on the surface [TS]

01:33:07   and notice i like is like like a robot [TS]

01:33:09   lubricant 444 but it seems like they [TS]

01:33:13   have a circulatory system and why do you [TS]

01:33:15   do maybe you just need a circulatory [TS]

01:33:17   system for the skin I don't know we [TS]

01:33:18   don't know enough about what's inside [TS]

01:33:19   these things we haven't seen any of them [TS]

01:33:20   sliced in half so i can make a call yet [TS]

01:33:23   but ok was like it seems like cyborgs to [TS]

01:33:24   me all right especially especially if [TS]

01:33:26   they're going to be convincing sexpots [TS]

01:33:28   interesting well that may be true but [TS]

01:33:29   that's what the blue fluid floor 40 we [TS]

01:33:33   also don't know how much the same way [TS]

01:33:34   that we knew we had a density measure [TS]

01:33:36   like they all like 400 pounds because [TS]

01:33:38   they're you know made of steel and stuff [TS]

01:33:40   I don't write will have to stay tuned [TS]

01:33:42   for season 2 where they won't be [TS]

01:33:43   I'm sure they're gonna have suddenly [TS]

01:33:44   came to this yeah seems like alien [TS]

01:33:46   autopsy by the Saints robot [TS]

01:33:50   yeah I wish we had more time for humans [TS]

01:33:52   i got tons more to say about I want to [TS]

01:33:53   drag it out but I I thought we decided [TS]

01:33:55   that was really good i thought the last [TS]

01:33:57   episode was it was like basically like [TS]

01:33:59   we both watched my wife and I were like [TS]

01:34:01   was so excited after i know it and I was [TS]

01:34:03   like that was really know you can feel [TS]

01:34:06   them backing off of all the momentum if [TS]

01:34:08   you if you thought about it though [TS]

01:34:09   how could they and now without ending [TS]

01:34:13   the series like it's like if you wanted [TS]

01:34:15   to do the the final bits big dramatic [TS]

01:34:17   think it builds up builds up and then [TS]

01:34:19   they're all conscious and wait for [TS]

01:34:20   season two of them what the hell they [TS]

01:34:21   doing season two didn't make it they [TS]

01:34:22   don't have the budget for that [TS]

01:34:23   government can see what that that would [TS]

01:34:25   be an interesting problem i'd love to [TS]

01:34:27   have that problem but I mean I'd rather [TS]

01:34:29   have that problem then have the lose the [TS]

01:34:32   momentum thing [TS]

01:34:33   yeah yeah just said that they just [TS]

01:34:34   didn't lose it they like to put the [TS]

01:34:36   brakes i stopped dead yeah [TS]

01:34:37   yep they're afraid i was there like here [TS]

01:34:40   there we have to have season two and [TS]

01:34:42   then and then I had to screw with their [TS]

01:34:43   character motivations you like you have [TS]

01:34:45   to believe that the the partner reveals [TS]

01:34:47   herself to her partner and says you're [TS]

01:34:49   my favorite human but then has his dark [TS]

01:34:51   past but then also wants to kill her [TS]

01:34:53   since family within changes in mind i'm [TS]

01:34:54   not going to kill you they're gonna help [TS]

01:34:55   you but then one of them is brainwashing [TS]

01:34:56   us just like too much to like too much [TS]

01:35:00   stoppage too many people doing things [TS]

01:35:01   out of character just so you can you [TS]

01:35:03   call your momentum and spread them to [TS]

01:35:05   the four winds [TS]
