00:02:17 ◼   ► and mr. robot was one of those and it is [TS]

00:02:21 ◼   ► created by a guy named sam ass male who [TS]

00:02:23 ◼   ► had done some a written some [TS]

00:02:26 ◼   ► well thought of movie screen plays one [TS]

00:02:28 ◼   ► of which was produced one of which was [TS]

00:02:29 ◼   ► famously I guess not produced but loved [TS]

00:02:32 ◼   ► by people who read it and yet Hollywood [TS]

00:02:34 ◼   ► never made and and he got he got the [TS]

00:02:38 ◼   ► power to run the this show for USA and [TS]

00:02:41 ◼   ► and make mr. robot and the result is a [TS]

00:02:44 ◼   ► very I'd say peculiar skewed kind of TV [TS]

00:02:49 ◼   ► show not like what I expected to see I [TS]

00:02:51 ◼   ► honestly watched most 22 gauge how bad [TS]

00:02:55 ◼   ► it's technology was like this like how [TS]

00:02:58 ◼   ► bad the tech was in it and in the end my [TS]

00:03:01 ◼   ► verdict on that was that it was as good [TS]

00:03:02 ◼   ► as one can probably expect from a actual [TS]

00:03:05 ◼   ► dramatic TV show about computer things [TS]

00:03:07 ◼   ► but what was unexpected for me anyway [TS]

00:03:11 ◼   ► was how great it was quite frankly how [TS]

00:03:14 ◼   ► incredibly closely entertaining and [TS]

00:03:16 ◼   ► interesting it was so what do you all [TS]

00:03:23 ◼   ► the title alone really in grossly [TS]

00:03:31 ◼   ► like the joke about you know CSI cyber [TS]

00:03:45 ◼   ► dunno terrible technology when I see it [TS]

00:03:47 ◼   ► and that can be really frustrating and [TS]

00:04:21 ◼   ► absorbing iie I thought the pacing was [TS]

00:04:26 ◼   ► Tim talked about on your other program [TS]

00:04:28 ◼   ► is that the show really hangs on the guy [TS]

00:04:31 ◼   ► plays Elliot who I just thought was [TS]

00:04:34 ◼   ► terrific but the rest of the cast is is [TS]

00:04:36 ◼   ► great and [TS]

00:04:37 ◼   ► I don't know I found it incredibly [TS]

00:04:38 ◼   ► absorbing in ways that I didn't even [TS]

00:04:40 ◼   ► expect and it knew I guess I guess I [TS]

00:04:44 ◼   ► feel like it really knew which buttons [TS]

00:04:46 ◼   ► to hit at which times to keep the [TS]

00:04:48 ◼   ► tension high and keeping interest high [TS]

00:04:49 ◼   ► and knowing when to introduce what are [TS]

00:04:51 ◼   ► ultimately very complex human and mental [TS]

00:04:53 ◼   ► and emotional issues even in the midst [TS]

00:04:56 ◼   ► of all this you know people typing in a [TS]

00:04:57 ◼   ► terminal I I thought it was I thought it [TS]

00:05:00 ◼   ► was pretty terrific make the only [TS]

00:05:02 ◼   ► spoiler-free things i can say about it [TS]

00:05:04 ◼   ► are to the people listening and that to [TS]

00:05:07 ◼   ► the point of what Marlon made before [TS]

00:05:09 ◼   ► when i heard people talking about mr. [TS]

00:05:12 ◼   ► robot for the longest time probably days [TS]

00:05:14 ◼   ► or weeks i thought it was a comedy and I [TS]

00:05:15 ◼   ► was not interested that's like another [TS]

00:05:18 ◼   ► Silicon Valley you know mr. robot is not [TS]

00:05:21 ◼   ► a good title for the show I if you have [TS]

00:05:23 ◼   ► don't know what we're talking about and [TS]

00:05:25 ◼   ► I'm staying away the show because of the [TS]

00:05:27 ◼   ► title ignore the title it's a it's a [TS]

00:05:30 ◼   ► it is not a comedy at all mother has [TS]

00:05:56 ◼   ► else so I don't know if he's a great [TS]

00:06:38 ◼   ► I was gonna like it to orphan black from [TS]

00:06:40 ◼   ► a couple years ago was like I don't know [TS]

00:06:42 ◼   ► and i'm not sure if they can pull this [TS]

00:06:44 ◼   ► off and I got kind of got pulled in and [TS]

00:06:46 ◼   ► further and further and by the end of it [TS]

00:06:48 ◼   ► I was like oh no this is great and [TS]

00:06:50 ◼   ► that was sort of the the my expectations [TS]

00:06:53 ◼   ► were particularly high and I was a [TS]

00:06:54 ◼   ► little skeptical and then it kind of [TS]

00:06:56 ◼   ► kind of stuck me in [TS]

00:06:57 ◼   ► yeah it's it's funny to think about you [TS]

00:06:59 ◼   ► know I don't the words treatment or just [TS]

00:07:02 ◼   ► even the script but I IE I can't even [TS]

00:07:04 ◼   ► imagine how you would describe let's say [TS]

00:07:07 ◼   ► you're doing the casting and you're [TS]

00:07:08 ◼   ► talking to the casting people about what [TS]

00:07:09 ◼   ► you want this actor to accomplish you [TS]

00:07:12 ◼   ► know if you were to describe the sorts [TS]

00:07:14 ◼   ► of things that this sector does so well [TS]

00:07:16 ◼   ► as Elliot it would it would sound like a [TS]

00:07:19 ◼   ► like a caricature I mean it would sound [TS]

00:07:21 ◼   ► almost like a like a like a baggy pants [TS]

00:07:23 ◼   ► kind of vaudeville idea of like some [TS]

00:07:25 ◼   ► kind of like spitting one of those [TS]

00:07:26 ◼   ► autistic programmers but he brings so [TS]

00:07:28 ◼   ► much nuance to it and again i might be [TS]

00:07:30 ◼   ► cooking this from Tim Goodman but the [TS]

00:07:32 ◼   ► way that he can look both dead I'd and [TS]

00:07:34 ◼   ► bug-eyed at the same time is it is a [TS]

00:07:36 ◼   ► terrific big bug eyes but he's got but [TS]

00:07:39 ◼   ► you we use met Elliot and we've already [TS]

00:07:41 ◼   ► know Elliot some of us are le and we've [TS]

00:07:43 ◼   ► been around Elliot and we know that it's [TS]

00:07:45 ◼   ► not really just as simple as though it's [TS]

00:07:47 ◼   ► that crazy guy who fixes the computer [TS]

00:07:48 ◼   ► like he brings he brings a lot to it [TS]

00:07:51 ◼   ► it's when you realize the you talking to [TS]

00:07:53 ◼   ► somebody and and the lack of a fact that [TS]

00:07:56 ◼   ► you sense is potentially either out an [TS]

00:08:00 ◼   ► actual lack of a fact they don't you [TS]

00:08:02 ◼   ► know they're not reacting to you or it [TS]

00:08:04 ◼   ► is completely the deer-in-the-headlights [TS]

00:08:05 ◼   ► and I and and I i have that experience [TS]

00:08:08 ◼   ► sometimes and and that's what I always [TS]

00:08:10 ◼   ► got from Elliott is like what's back [TS]

00:08:12 ◼   ► there what's behind them and one of the [TS]

00:08:14 ◼   ► brilliant things I think about the pilot [TS]

00:08:15 ◼   ► episode is that it plays I feel like it [TS]

00:08:19 ◼   ► plays us this whole show plays us and we [TS]

00:08:21 ◼   ► will talk to that after we fire off the [TS]

00:08:22 ◼   ► spoiler but the pilot plays us perfectly [TS]

00:08:25 ◼   ► in X and expects us to make every single [TS]

00:08:29 ◼   ► assumption about what you just said it's [TS]

00:08:31 ◼   ► the kind of us autistic you somewhere on [TS]

00:08:34 ◼   ► the spectrum computernerd programmer guy [TS]

00:08:36 ◼   ► ux you know those cliches are are [TS]

00:08:39 ◼   ► programmed into us and then it just kind [TS]

00:08:42 ◼   ► not small down as it goes and you [TS]

00:08:45 ◼   ► realize what you're seeing is a much [TS]

00:08:47 ◼   ► more interesting performance and much [TS]

00:08:49 ◼   ► more interesting character than the one [TS]

00:08:51 ◼   ► that you might have expected from you [TS]

00:08:53 ◼   ► know some basic cable show about that [TS]

00:08:55 ◼   ► supposed to be about hackers right on on [TS]

00:09:10 ◼   ► the traps it falls into are the common [TS]

00:09:12 ◼   ► ones but it's just not important like I [TS]

00:09:17 ◼   ► technical problems because the [TS]

00:09:18 ◼   ► technology is not the point that the [TS]

00:09:20 ◼   ► people who made the show did not get [TS]

00:09:22 ◼   ► bogged down in like we have to make this [TS]

00:09:24 ◼   ► realistic in its it's a human drama [TS]

00:09:26 ◼   ► happens the setting happens to be [TS]

00:09:28 ◼   ► hacking don't worry about even if your [TS]

00:09:29 ◼   ► computer and I think everything else is [TS]

00:09:32 ◼   ► good about the show will make you ignore [TS]

00:09:33 ◼   ► the admittedly laughable times they [TS]

00:09:36 ◼   ► tight touch on technology that's fine [TS]

00:09:38 ◼   ► it's not the point of the show was [TS]

00:09:39 ◼   ► before we blow the horn here I feel like [TS]

00:09:42 ◼   ► the people who i want to get your read [TS]

00:09:44 ◼   ► on this John because if there's anybody [TS]

00:09:45 ◼   ► who can who can address this for me it's [TS]

00:09:47 ◼   ► you I felt like this was about as good [TS]

00:09:50 ◼   ► in terms of like you know you're [TS]

00:09:53 ◼   ► generally right you're generally on the [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► right track about like the tech that [TS]

00:09:56 ◼   ► they did show i didn't have those [TS]

00:09:59 ◼   ► moments of initially like no it's not [TS]

00:10:01 ◼   ► like that at all it was more like those [TS]

00:10:03 ◼   ► are some of those in the first episode [TS]

00:10:06 ◼   ► the even just like the terminal commands [TS]

00:10:09 ◼   ► ballpark and I realized that the low bar [TS]

00:10:11 ◼   ► because of scorpion and CSI cyber [TS]

00:10:13 ◼   ► but I was like whoever did this like [TS]

00:10:15 ◼   ► they they knew what they were doing and [TS]

00:10:18 ◼   ► then the the writer and producer were [TS]

00:10:21 ◼   ► like yeah we're gonna do what we need to [TS]

00:10:23 ◼   ► do for drama and and if you really saw [TS]

00:10:25 ◼   ► hacking seen like the scene in the first [TS]

00:10:27 ◼   ► episode that was not you know there was [TS]

00:10:30 ◼   ► more realistic it would just be boring [TS]

00:10:32 ◼   ► so I feel like yeah I'm gonna give him a [TS]

00:10:34 ◼   ► pass for that but I felt like underneath [TS]

00:10:36 ◼   ► it all it was smart [TS]

00:10:37 ◼   ► that was not Ludacris with its its [TS]

00:10:40 ◼   ► attack in broad strokes of things that [TS]

00:10:42 ◼   ► happen are all reasonable implausible [TS]

00:10:44 ◼   ► and drive the plot forward but they're [TS]

00:10:45 ◼   ► not really the point in the minor [TS]

00:10:47 ◼   ► details they get lots of stuff wrong but [TS]

00:10:49 ◼   ► it doesn't matter you know yes you just [TS]

00:10:50 ◼   ► forgive that because it's they don't [TS]

00:10:52 ◼   ► dwell on it that there's not it's not [TS]

00:10:53 ◼   ► the point of the show at all so don't be [TS]

00:10:55 ◼   ► scared away if even if you're someone [TS]

00:10:57 ◼   ► who's into computers did I don't be [TS]

00:10:59 ◼   ► scared away by the silly episode titles [TS]

00:11:01 ◼   ► that are supposed to look like all names [TS]

00:11:02 ◼   ► and ridiculous i like that i mean it's [TS]

00:11:04 ◼   ► like literally the episode titles are [TS]

00:11:06 ◼   ► things you'd find on bittorrent also be [TS]

00:11:08 ◼   ► cool 8 respond to that the Micronauts on [TS]

00:11:12 ◼   ► there I'm just saying [TS]

00:11:14 ◼   ► yeah um I mean where where you know [TS]

00:11:16 ◼   ► probably pretty certain to upset or [TS]

00:11:19 ◼   ► offend somebody with these terms but i [TS]

00:11:20 ◼   ► mean i think it is there they are [TS]

00:11:21 ◼   ► actively we're not saying these as a [TS]

00:11:24 ◼   ► pejorative I think I don't know that [TS]

00:11:26 ◼   ► there's definitely first of all I think [TS]

00:11:27 ◼   ► there's definitely an attempt to and at [TS]

00:11:30 ◼   ► least initially portray this guy as not [TS]

00:11:33 ◼   ► just having sort of mental and emotional [TS]

00:11:35 ◼   ► disturbances but i think he'd be very [TS]

00:11:37 ◼   ► much reads as somebody on on the [TS]

00:11:40 ◼   ► spectrum and you know and i think it's a [TS]

00:11:42 ◼   ► pretty fantastic time for us getting a [TS]

00:11:46 ◼   ► better understanding of how it works [TS]

00:11:48 ◼   ► when you're you know when you're talking [TS]

00:11:50 ◼   ► about people being on the spectrum [TS]

00:11:51 ◼   ► because we're learning so much more as a [TS]

00:11:52 ◼   ► great new book about this you know [TS]

00:11:57 ◼   ► the spectrum called people in my family [TS]

00:12:02 ◼   ► a pretty long time ago is just because [TS]

00:12:09 ◼   ► know a finishing your sentences that you [TS]

00:12:11 ◼   ► know that I'm listening [TS]

00:12:12 ◼   ► even if I'm interrupting you and in the [TS]

00:12:14 ◼   ► case of some of these folks and then [TS]

00:12:15 ◼   ► they seem like you say like like it's a [TS]

00:12:16 ◼   ► deer in headlights [TS]

00:12:17 ◼   ► what we now know though is that this [TS]

00:12:20 ◼   ► looks are maybe not appearing to even be [TS]

00:12:22 ◼   ► listening to you but they are picking up [TS]

00:12:24 ◼   ► they can be picked not only be listening [TS]

00:12:27 ◼   ► and assimilating information in a way [TS]

00:12:28 ◼   ► that you would not but that there [TS]

00:12:31 ◼   ► I don't know it's it's a gift in some [TS]

00:12:33 ◼   ► ways that some of these folks have our [TS]

00:12:35 ◼   ► are very gifted and what they're able to [TS]

00:12:40 ◼   ► nontraditional the end up getting pegged [TS]

00:12:42 ◼   ► as you say being being a robot so I just [TS]

00:12:44 ◼   ► gonna be a little bit sensitive about [TS]

00:12:48 ◼   ► think that they are very much setting [TS]

00:12:50 ◼   ► him up part of their way that they [TS]

00:12:52 ◼   ► greatly disrupt our our our expectations [TS]

00:12:56 ◼   ► knew this and then I saw this but you [TS]

00:12:57 ◼   ► know what that goes for a bunch of the [TS]

00:12:59 ◼   ► characters like you think you understand [TS]

00:13:04 ◼   ► i like that i like the fact that all the [TS]

00:13:05 ◼   ► characters are most of the characters if [TS]
