00:00:15   bad man won the tournament that we ran [TS]

00:00:18   here that was stupid and we wanted to [TS]

00:00:20   have an amazing episode about that man [TS]

00:00:23   and we we are doing one tonight we are [TS]

00:00:26   we are embarking on a journey through [TS]

00:00:28   films starting the Batman and we're [TS]

00:00:31   starting with the the tim burton [TS]

00:00:34   directed Batman films 1989 Batman and [TS]

00:00:38   1992 is batman returns to discuss these [TS]

00:00:43   films with me i have a fine panel of [TS]

00:00:46   people who watch the movies and that [TS]

00:00:47   will talk about it because that's what [TS]

00:00:48   the show is will begin by introducing [TS]

00:00:51   them [TS]

00:00:51   Shannon sudderth is here hi Shannon [TS]

00:00:53   welcome back 11 keys [TS]

00:00:55   David jail or wholly super your [TS]

00:00:57   spectacular Batman and the no new auntie [TS]

00:01:02   Ashley hello I'm multi-chip sudderth I'm [TS]

00:01:09   sorry i I'm I didn't prepare I've [TS]

00:01:12   watched the ben affleck daredevil and [TS]

00:01:14   Tony sindelar hello nerds and for Batman [TS]

00:01:20   is Mac Batman belongs to all of us we [TS]

00:01:22   are all been no let's not get carried [TS]

00:01:24   away [TS]

00:01:25   it's not how DC Comics sees it i don't [TS]

00:01:27   think that all right so here's the story [TS]

00:01:29   with that man they did the the adam west [TS]

00:01:31   batman in the sixties that was fun then [TS]

00:01:34   the property cuddle just lay there for a [TS]

00:01:36   while Superman they start making [TS]

00:01:39   Superman films in the late seventies [TS]

00:01:41   those are successful and they decided we [TS]

00:01:43   should go back into batman again they [TS]

00:01:44   took until nineteen eighty-nine when [TS]

00:01:47   finally Batman hit the big screen again [TS]

00:01:50   starring michael keaton as Bruce Wayne [TS]

00:01:52   and Batman Jack Nicholson as the Joker [TS]

00:01:54   directed by tim burton this was for [TS]

00:01:58   those who did not live through it i can [TS]

00:01:59   just say it was a big deal like this was [TS]

00:02:02   my memory is that this was the first [TS]

00:02:05   like market movie as marketing campaign [TS]

00:02:10   that I remember like literally the [TS]

00:02:12   Batman logo [TS]

00:02:14   was omnipresent you could not everything [TS]

00:02:18   had Batman logos on it your milk at a [TS]

00:02:20   batman logo on it [TS]

00:02:21   everything had Batman logos it was it [TS]

00:02:25   was for those who didn't live through it [TS]

00:02:26   it was a huge marketing push this was my [TS]

00:02:29   want to say the end of my freshman year [TS]

00:02:31   in college and yeah so it was a big deal [TS]

00:02:35   and I think it was a man an extremely [TS]

00:02:37   successful film as well with a different [TS]

00:02:40   you know a different kind of take that [TS]

00:02:42   was very influential that led to like [TS]

00:02:44   the the a lot of the themes of it get [TS]

00:02:47   kind of replayed in batman the animated [TS]

00:02:48   series it's got an interesting kind of [TS]

00:02:51   art deco-style uh so anyway let's start [TS]

00:02:55   by discussing tim burton's batman is [TS]

00:02:58   everybody here [TS]

00:02:59   did you did you all see Batman when it [TS]

00:03:01   came out or did you watch it later [TS]

00:03:04   yeah I saw it when it came out but I was [TS]

00:03:08   a really big comics nerd at the time so [TS]

00:03:10   I also went through the pre-movie pre [TS]

00:03:14   publicity [TS]

00:03:16   oh my god this is going to suck they [TS]

00:03:18   can't Michael Keane I remember that his [TS]

00:03:21   chin isn't strong enough so that it's [TS]

00:03:24   it's remarkable that this movie was this [TS]

00:03:27   successful as it wasn't i think a lot of [TS]

00:03:29   it had to do with the overdrive [TS]

00:03:31   marketing that Warner's did to try to [TS]

00:03:33   convince people that know it wasn't [TS]

00:03:34   going to suck you know I I was the one [TS]

00:03:37   in my my group in high school because [TS]

00:03:40   this came out right at the tail end of [TS]

00:03:41   my senior year of high school I was the [TS]

00:03:44   one who when they announced the casting [TS]

00:03:46   was like okay it's gonna be great and [TS]

00:03:48   everyone else is like no no come on come [TS]

00:03:51   on Michael Keaton these Betelgeuse is [TS]

00:03:53   mr. mom and like they're just you watch [TS]

00:03:56   and sure enough he is I mean he's still [TS]

00:03:58   my favorite movie Batman I saw it [TS]

00:04:00   opening night in a crowded theater that [TS]

00:04:03   was completely full and it was playing [TS]

00:04:05   into auditoriums in that multi plaque [TS]

00:04:07   and I know that because there was [TS]

00:04:09   something wrong with their print and we [TS]

00:04:10   had to sit there in that crowded theater [TS]

00:04:12   for 30 minutes past the show time until [TS]

00:04:15   it finally started and I still loved [TS]

00:04:18   every second of it [TS]

00:04:19   my friends and I spent months doing jack [TS]

00:04:21   nicholson's little card thing remove the [TS]

00:04:23   card around the deck everything in the [TS]

00:04:26   movie was cool too [TS]

00:04:27   and it's it's one of the few that ever [TS]

00:04:28   so twice in the theater in the same [TS]

00:04:30   weekend my college roommates and I we [TS]

00:04:33   were not cool people we memorized the [TS]

00:04:37   lyrics to bat dance that's how could [TS]

00:04:39   that mean to you do we wait for this [TS]

00:04:42   movie and I married him anyway Tony ya [TS]

00:04:45   too young to be an honorary or just old [TS]

00:04:47   enough to see a bad man i was definitely [TS]

00:04:49   too young for part perhaps for both of [TS]

00:04:52   these movies but definitely for this one [TS]

00:04:53   I think i was aware as a spamming I was [TS]

00:04:57   a child I i was aware of the like the [TS]

00:05:00   marketing push of it but I i think the [TS]

00:05:03   first time I saw it was you know on a [TS]

00:05:05   VHS tape it's good you're drinking your [TS]

00:05:07   milk it's good and yeah because I think [TS]

00:05:09   you're bad milk [TS]

00:05:10   yeah and speaking of bad milk i should [TS]

00:05:12   say the Batman cereal that came out [TS]

00:05:14   needing nine was really good [TS]

00:05:17   Batman Returns cereal not as good funny [TS]

00:05:20   men but we'll get there we'll get there [TS]

00:05:22   tim burton personally make both of those [TS]

00:05:24   so all right let's talk about Batman [TS]

00:05:27   then we'll look we'll talk about 1989's [TS]

00:05:30   Batman now I mentioned I the style here [TS]

00:05:33   is it's fun it is this weird art deco [TS]

00:05:37   kind of style we we've seen this in a [TS]

00:05:39   few movies up [TS]

00:05:40   it's definitely I you know the i always [TS]

00:05:44   think of Max Headroom is being a little [TS]

00:05:45   bit like that although that's a little [TS]

00:05:47   more techy of course the great Super [TS]

00:05:48   Mario Brothers it's anyway but it but it [TS]

00:05:52   is a it's kind of a fun mix of things [TS]

00:05:55   that look old along with some things [TS]

00:05:56   that look uh look modern and his first [TS]

00:05:59   was the designer I think won the Oscar [TS]

00:06:01   for art direction it would visit it [TS]

00:06:03   looks really beautiful and from the very [TS]

00:06:06   very start where we see the this stuff [TS]

00:06:08   we see a family with it with a parents [TS]

00:06:11   in and the young kid and it's very [TS]

00:06:13   clearly playing on the origin of Batman [TS]

00:06:17   it's kind of a fake-out and it's a fake [TS]

00:06:19   ad because it's not it's actually the [TS]

00:06:20   present and they're saved by Batman but [TS]

00:06:22   but they they can't get a cab so they [TS]

00:06:24   decided to cut through a dark dark le [TS]

00:06:29   dangerous Ally because they're dumb [TS]

00:06:31   yeah and that meant save them when i [TS]

00:06:34   first saw this movie I it was a crowded [TS]

00:06:37   house there were loads of people there [TS]

00:06:39   who were not come [TS]

00:06:40   book fans they were there because of the [TS]

00:06:42   marketing and all the stuff that opening [TS]

00:06:44   scene when you see the but i think one [TS]

00:06:48   of the descriptions of Gotham City is as [TS]

00:06:50   long as the hell burst from the ground [TS]

00:06:52   and kept on going [TS]

00:06:53   when you see that opening claustrophobic [TS]

00:06:55   shot shot there were people in the [TS]

00:06:58   audience who were clearly not regular [TS]

00:06:59   Batman fans who just audibly gasps oh my [TS]

00:07:02   god this is horrific [TS]

00:07:04   you know right the right then and there [TS]

00:07:06   that art direction is just coming at you [TS]

00:07:09   and it's not [TS]

00:07:10   Dayglow sixties pop art that's for sure [TS]

00:07:13   who are you I'm Batman [TS]

00:07:15   here it is oh we we did that ad [TS]

00:07:19   infinitum on its are everywhere else i'm [TS]

00:07:22   back mad by then you're saying you [TS]

00:07:24   stopped [TS]

00:07:25   well no I don't think it's just slow [TS]

00:07:27   down some some people went and got day [TS]

00:07:29   jobs and didn't do it anymore but now i [TS]

00:07:32   remember going up to a drive-through I [TS]

00:07:35   don't want to say it was a McDonald's [TS]

00:07:37   but it could have been a taco bell and [TS]

00:07:39   and what is it can I help you have [TS]

00:07:40   everyone in the car when I'm Batman [TS]

00:07:43   yeah he threatens the one guy a lot but [TS]

00:07:49   he but he says no no I'll send out you [TS]

00:07:51   can send a message my notes here are all [TS]

00:07:53   about how this I think is very [TS]

00:07:55   definitely trying to reflect the new [TS]

00:07:59   york city of this period this is a [TS]

00:08:01   crumbling sleazy metropolis except often [TS]

00:08:05   city it's not metropolis to Gotham City [TS]

00:08:08   but it is it is very much that eighties [TS]

00:08:11   sleazy garbagey New York that we're [TS]

00:08:14   seeing in in Gotham it's gross [TS]

00:08:17   the hipsters have not come yet know it's [TS]

00:08:20   gross but it's also got art deco and [TS]

00:08:23   gargoyles everywhere [TS]

00:08:25   hmm sure it's a cooler city that's gone [TS]

00:08:28   to credit and tommy guns the police [TS]

00:08:30   carry tommy guns i love how I i love how [TS]

00:08:34   just an anachronistic the whole thing is [TS]

00:08:36   and they're all in like weird leather [TS]

00:08:37   jackets that you know are you know the [TS]

00:08:41   me I i think the word that comes to mind [TS]

00:08:43   is it is discount finish where um yeah [TS]

00:08:46   yeah but that's just that's it that's [TS]

00:08:48   how they do things in Gotham yeah Tony [TS]

00:08:50   when you can't afford a leather catsuit [TS]

00:08:51   you know what you do you just cut up [TS]

00:08:53   some final and so it but [TS]

00:08:54   that's another yeah anyway I learned a [TS]

00:08:56   lot in these movies [TS]

00:08:58   hey so uh so we see Billy Dee Williams [TS]

00:09:02   appears as Harvey Dent although he [TS]

00:09:05   doesn't have very much to do in this [TS]

00:09:06   movie he's just kind of present Jack [TS]

00:09:08   Nicholson and a Jerry Hall i have a have [TS]

00:09:13   a scene together jacket jacket is the [TS]

00:09:16   henchman for the organized crime leader [TS]

00:09:19   and Jerry Hall is his is his girl but [TS]

00:09:22   they are stepping out on the side here [TS]

00:09:24   and we get some lines including decent [TS]

00:09:28   people shouldn't live here which is good [TS]

00:09:30   this is Gotham City welcome to it and [TS]

00:09:33   and what delightful casting is Jack [TS]

00:09:35   palace you can be Jack Nicholson's boss [TS]

00:09:39   yeah you just somebody bigger than Jack [TS]

00:09:41   Nicholson Jack Nicholson is going to be [TS]

00:09:43   playing this pretty big kind of big [TS]

00:09:46   remember Jack never got my number one [TS]

00:09:49   guy [TS]

00:09:51   it's yeah Jack Palance is great as a [TS]

00:09:53   Carl Grissom Chris some gruesome right [TS]

00:09:56   and there's another there's dirty [TS]

00:09:58   lieutenant Hart who we meet who is one [TS]

00:10:02   of my least favorite things about this [TS]

00:10:03   movie because he's just kind of a fat [TS]

00:10:05   slob who is like dubbed in i think yeah [TS]

00:10:09   I would I couldn't tell if what was [TS]

00:10:11   going I wasn't sure if somebody if he [TS]

00:10:12   was eight ER in his own lines or [TS]

00:10:14   somebody else was covering them but yeah [TS]

00:10:15   like noticeably doesn't match up the way [TS]

00:10:18   he's dubbed to is strange [TS]

00:10:20   he's dubbed as if he's communicating but [TS]

00:10:22   the the voice is so soft and gravely [TS]

00:10:25   that there's no way that any any noise [TS]

00:10:28   at that volume could have been [TS]

00:10:29   understandable by any of the other [TS]

00:10:30   characters in the scene and I just don't [TS]

00:10:32   I I never liked the character and I [TS]

00:10:35   never liked the way he talked but it was [TS]

00:10:37   only watching it back this time that I [TS]

00:10:39   realized he's just completely dubbed in [TS]

00:10:41   and I don't even know why and its kind [TS]

00:10:43   of slightly gravely and anyway he's a [TS]

00:10:45   crooked cop and and he's gross and his [TS]

00:10:49   voice is super strange and and it's [TS]

00:10:52   Porkins yeah yeah [TS]

00:10:55   Porkins it's so bizarre to me well the [TS]

00:10:57   butt with a weird dubbed again it might [TS]

00:10:59   be him it might be somebody else mr. is [TS]

00:11:01   it's very strange required a monthly I [TS]

00:11:04   don't get that shit together [TS]

00:11:06   someone else took up all the oxygen in [TS]

00:11:08   the room before he got any life [TS]

00:11:10   interesting [TS]

00:11:11   we meet a couple other characters early [TS]

00:11:13   on here too we we meet knocks the the [TS]

00:11:17   reporter played by room TVs Robert wool [TS]

00:11:21   oh I love knocks because Robert was [TS]

00:11:23   playing him like he's the star of the [TS]

00:11:25   movie yet haven't no no one told you see [TS]

00:11:28   he's almost in a different movie [TS]

00:11:30   he's like a wacky wacky journalism movie [TS]

00:11:33   that is not the movies and it's it is [TS]

00:11:35   very french maid and halfway through the [TS]

00:11:37   movie he just drops out like he's off [TS]

00:11:39   following scoops or something but it's [TS]

00:11:42   like the movie said oh wait [TS]

00:11:44   we've got Batman sorry Robert no he's [TS]

00:11:46   like kind of any movie come with you I'm [TS]

00:11:48   gonna do some stuff in the movies like [TS]

00:11:49   no I remember him doing the late-night [TS]

00:11:52   chat show circuit around this time and [TS]

00:11:54   he was actually he was acting like it [TS]

00:11:56   was his movie there too [TS]

00:11:58   yeah this is terrible i remember on the [TS]

00:12:00   comedy channel that he would do one of [TS]

00:12:02   the going to commercial bumpers and it [TS]

00:12:05   was mostly him complaining that he got a [TS]

00:12:09   great contract that said he got a cut of [TS]

00:12:10   the toy rights but then he discovered [TS]

00:12:14   you only got a cut of his toy right and [TS]

00:12:17   you were not a lot of plucky reporter [TS]

00:12:19   toys being sold [TS]

00:12:21   hey I had I had the plucky reporters [TS]

00:12:23   journalist notebook and pen and and the [TS]

00:12:26   snap brim hat you gotta you gotta give a [TS]

00:12:29   couple dollars to Robert well that's [TS]

00:12:30   okay he's got are less money now it's [TS]

00:12:32   fine and we and we also meet kim [TS]

00:12:35   basinger as Vicki Vale who is introduced [TS]

00:12:38   so you know they're trying to do the on [TS]

00:12:42   some kind of a battery thing between [TS]

00:12:44   Robert wall and kim basinger her and I [TS]

00:12:48   can't decide whether it's gross or [TS]

00:12:50   whether it's amusing because he's so bad [TS]

00:12:53   at it [TS]

00:12:54   I tend to plump for the ladder yeah that [TS]

00:12:56   that he's he's that bad at it she's [TS]

00:12:58   humoring him because she needed help [TS]

00:13:01   yeah I think he's the only one who's got [TS]

00:13:03   the banter going on she's just humoring [TS]

00:13:05   yeah but she's like it all gets summed [TS]

00:13:08   up later on when at one point you know [TS]

00:13:10   he's like expressing concern or [TS]

00:13:12   something and she puts both her hands on [TS]

00:13:13   his face and give them a quick little [TS]

00:13:15   kiss your you're cute yorkie pups [TS]

00:13:17   through it you can tell she's a serious [TS]

00:13:19   reporter because she wears glasses [TS]

00:13:20   sometimes huh right you can you can [TS]

00:13:23   definitely tell that but they are again [TS]

00:13:25   it is it is kind of a fun fun tone but [TS]

00:13:27   it's a little bit weird because it's it [TS]

00:13:28   is like from another movie about plucky [TS]

00:13:31   reporters but it's really just to get us [TS]

00:13:32   into this other story that were that [TS]

00:13:34   were going to get with with Batman which [TS]

00:13:37   is fine i I actually made a note at this [TS]

00:13:39   point to that at points rubber walls [TS]

00:13:41   performance reminds me a little bit of [TS]

00:13:42   like Bill Murray in ghostbusters it's [TS]

00:13:44   that kind of eccentric and bizarre and [TS]

00:13:47   there's the whole thing where where [TS]

00:13:49   they're in Bruce Wayne's uh that mansion [TS]

00:13:52   and they're like wander into the Hall of [TS]

00:13:54   weapons like the museum room must be a [TS]

00:13:56   hang of the wicker people and things [TS]

00:13:58   like that where it's just the strange [TS]

00:14:00   you know but look at this look at that [TS]

00:14:01   mirror he must be Bruce vain [TS]

00:14:03   I'm like again and again and again it's [TS]

00:14:06   just nice girl and i genuinely enjoy him [TS]

00:14:08   he's not putting a lot of energy out in [TS]

00:14:10   a role that he has to know isn't that [TS]

00:14:13   important [TS]

00:14:14   good for him i think he thinks it's that [TS]

00:14:17   important i'm sorry and godbless [TS]

00:14:20   important lesson yes I enjoy and I'm [TS]

00:14:23   surprised how much of his dialogue I I i [TS]

00:14:25   know i like know by heart the right wall [TS]

00:14:28   dialogue is wacky and it gets you into [TS]

00:14:30   the movie and yeah and then he is [TS]

00:14:32   discarded but he's kind of fun while you [TS]

00:14:36   sit around he serves His function and [TS]

00:14:38   goes on [TS]

00:14:39   yeah he doesn't die no he doesn't so we [TS]

00:14:42   get to kiss on the check instead on this [TS]

00:14:43   way in fact that the oh yeah that's [TS]

00:14:46   that's a happy ending in Gotham [TS]

00:14:47   well it's not a pure it's not a pure [TS]

00:14:50   origin movie it's sort of the first [TS]

00:14:52   appearance of Batman but we don't get [TS]

00:14:53   the we don't get the let's go to Nanda [TS]

00:14:56   Parbat and have training site once this [TS]

00:14:58   kind of stuff so in the beginning that [TS]

00:15:00   man's a mystery and Knox's the character [TS]

00:15:03   that is sort of investigating the [TS]

00:15:05   mystery and that that's our gateway in [TS]

00:15:07   and then that this everything shifts [TS]

00:15:10   over to Michael Keaton and there's [TS]

00:15:12   nothing for him to do and right good [TS]

00:15:15   riddance [TS]

00:15:15   good riddance also we get what you get [TS]

00:15:17   in in there in around this part i'm not [TS]

00:15:19   going to go point by point here but this [TS]

00:15:20   is where we get to see Michael Keaton we [TS]

00:15:22   get to see Michael koffice as Alfred as [TS]

00:15:25   well in some of these scenes in here [TS]

00:15:26   Michael Keaton so we talked about it I i [TS]

00:15:29   think i think this movie does a good job [TS]

00:15:31   of of getting a [TS]

00:15:33   introduced to Bruce Wayne and and I i [TS]

00:15:36   think yeah you spend a few minutes with [TS]

00:15:39   Michael Keaton is Bruce Wayne and I feel [TS]

00:15:41   like i buy into it is like oh IC IC why [TS]

00:15:44   Michael Keaton's in this movie because I [TS]

00:15:46   think he does i think he does a good job [TS]

00:15:47   my favorite Bruce Wayne of any movie [TS]

00:15:50   yes i like i like his version of like [TS]

00:15:53   weirdo eccentric I Bruce Wayne because [TS]

00:15:57   there's so many versions of Bruce Wayne [TS]

00:15:58   as the like the polished millionaire [TS]

00:16:01   playboy who is smooth talking and this I [TS]

00:16:03   like this guy who's just like no he's [TS]

00:16:04   awkward and weird and spend a lot of [TS]

00:16:06   time sitting by himself being brought [TS]

00:16:09   sandwiches by offered and doesn't really [TS]

00:16:10   know how to talk to people also he's [TS]

00:16:13   apparently not a celebrity and Gotham [TS]

00:16:14   not everybody knows what he looks like [TS]

00:16:16   and he's just this weird guy who throws [TS]

00:16:19   kind of benefit party things at his [TS]

00:16:21   house i like i like awkward Bruce Wayne [TS]

00:16:23   I details to enjoy himself at the party [TS]

00:16:26   like when he sneaks behind the the two [TS]

00:16:29   reporters and they're going to his [TS]

00:16:30   Museum he's watching them and he's [TS]

00:16:32   genuinely amused i feel like this is the [TS]

00:16:34   only Bruce Wayne from the movies i would [TS]

00:16:36   actually watch a movie about right yeah [TS]

00:16:39   right well in in in retrospect he's you [TS]

00:16:42   know I don't know how intentional was [TS]

00:16:44   but it's it's almost like he's playing [TS]

00:16:46   Bruce Wayne somewhere on the spectrum [TS]

00:16:48   right he's clearly a genius is of course [TS]

00:16:51   the world's greatest detective and of [TS]

00:16:53   course this is a movie where we get to [TS]

00:16:55   see that for once we get to know Bruce [TS]

00:16:57   Wayne instead of just Batman or just as [TS]

00:16:59   a cover for Batman and and i love that [TS]

00:17:02   and you know you get the impression that [TS]

00:17:03   he could fake being cool and suave if he [TS]

00:17:07   had to but this is a little bit more [TS]

00:17:10   like himself at least in this part of [TS]

00:17:12   the movie I was a mild comic book geek [TS]

00:17:15   going high school college and if for [TS]

00:17:17   this movie [TS]

00:17:18   the reason that I went was because they [TS]

00:17:21   cast Michael Keaton an accident that I [TS]

00:17:23   really really loved and was really [TS]

00:17:25   invested in and I was looking at the [TS]

00:17:27   blowback of you know it can't be and I'm [TS]

00:17:29   like yes it can you know yes it can [TS]

00:17:31   trust me [TS]

00:17:33   anybody can be hiding under that suit [TS]

00:17:35   but you've got to have somebody with his [TS]

00:17:37   kind of charm and wackiness and [TS]

00:17:40   instability [TS]

00:17:42   I mean that that you're dealing with a [TS]

00:17:43   young man who [TS]

00:17:44   you know who lost his parents were [TS]

00:17:48   killed in front of his eyes at a very [TS]

00:17:49   young age and his reaction to that is to [TS]

00:17:53   go and trained himself to the utmost to [TS]

00:17:56   to do something about it and not just do [TS]

00:17:59   something about it but I'm gonna dress [TS]

00:18:01   up like a bat and scare these criminals [TS]

00:18:02   are you need a Michael Keaton to pull [TS]

00:18:06   that character off [TS]

00:18:07   yeah and I think that's not normal know [TS]

00:18:09   exactly but that's not normal and and it [TS]

00:18:13   to the extent that you know a couple [TS]

00:18:16   movies later [TS]

00:18:17   did you brought they brought in this val [TS]

00:18:19   kilmer guide to be Bruce Wayne and he's [TS]

00:18:22   a conventional hero compared to Michael [TS]

00:18:24   Keaton who is just nuts [TS]

00:18:27   he is let not want to know you want to [TS]

00:18:30   get nuts he's got that Betelgeuse scene [TS]

00:18:32   where you see all that manic energy [TS]

00:18:34   right I I feel like eating gets lost [TS]

00:18:37   inside the Batsuit but that's not when [TS]

00:18:40   you need the actor to do the best job [TS]

00:18:43   you need him to do the best job as a [TS]

00:18:46   ruse Wayne and Keaton is mesmerizing [TS]

00:18:48   that Batman in the Batsuit could almost [TS]

00:18:50   be played by a stockman yeah right [TS]

00:18:52   huh it's the mr. Bruce Wayne you've got [TS]

00:18:54   a lot of really fine i acting from [TS]

00:18:58   Keaton when he's in the suit and [TS]

00:19:00   occasionally his yet some of his ideas [TS]

00:19:01   expressions come thru yes it's a quirk [TS]

00:19:04   of the mouth it says so much [TS]

00:19:06   yeah you know yeah in fact there is a [TS]

00:19:08   recent Batman movie that also involves [TS]

00:19:10   Superman huh [TS]

00:19:12   what would they call that movie i think [TS]

00:19:13   it's called Batman comma and also [TS]

00:19:15   Superman and to briefly reference that [TS]

00:19:19   movie i really liked Batman whenever it [TS]

00:19:22   was just Ben Affleck not a student [TS]

00:19:24   already got interested i can see there's [TS]

00:19:27   a CGI monster or something but there was [TS]

00:19:30   cool acting as Bruce Wayne and that's [TS]

00:19:32   the closest we're going to get to a bed [TS]

00:19:33   member Superman episode right there [TS]

00:19:35   there was an episode 493 contractual [TS]

00:19:41   obligation fulfilled the the teasers [TS]

00:19:43   they've put out for the Justice League [TS]

00:19:45   movie I really well-known like now in [TS]

00:19:48   and the layout no no no no nope nope [TS]

00:19:51   nope [TS]

00:19:52   this episode of the incomparable is [TS]

00:19:55   brought to you by blue apron i'm really [TS]

00:20:28   are reducing food waste we have just [TS]

00:20:30   enough to enjoy the meal and that's [TS]

00:20:32   about it and cooking together can be [TS]

00:20:34   great for kids families this summer [TS]

00:20:35   my wife made a point of cooking with our [TS]

00:20:38   kids with the blue aprons meals that got [TS]

00:20:40   clear recipes and instructions that you [TS]

00:20:43   can follow and that was a whole lot of [TS]

00:20:44   fun research shows that blue apron [TS]

00:20:46   families cook nearly three times more [TS]

00:20:47   often some of the meals available in [TS]

00:20:49   january from blue apron just to give you [TS]

00:20:52   an idea of the kind of stuff that you [TS]

00:20:57   spaghetti squash and marinara with [TS]

00:21:01   and korean rice cakes with cabbage and [TS]

00:21:03   for a cocky we have a huge folder full [TS]

00:21:07   of blue apron recipes that we want to [TS]

00:21:09   make again on a regular basis because we [TS]

00:21:11   love them so much when they came from [TS]

00:21:13   blue apron [TS]

00:21:14   it's really great check out this week's [TS]

00:21:27   blue apron so don't wait [TS]

00:21:29   blue apron dot-com / smell blue apron a [TS]

00:21:33   better way to cook so I want to give [TS]

00:21:35   some praise here is where I mean it was [TS]

00:21:36   great my Michael golf is great i do love [TS]

00:21:39   I mean tony mentioned like Alfred brings [TS]

00:21:42   him sandwiches but it's like it is this [TS]

00:21:45   this is a great moment where you know [TS]

00:21:47   it's like you know it's just us here in [TS]

00:21:50   this old mansion and he he encourages [TS]

00:21:52   Bruce and and Vicki to get together at [TS]

00:21:56   several points brings her to him in the [TS]

00:21:58   Batcave at the end of the movie and it's [TS]

00:22:01   just he's just so so delightful the [TS]

00:22:04   whole time I I [TS]

00:22:05   think i think has there been great [TS]

00:22:08   Alfred's in movies but i really love [TS]

00:22:10   Michael gasps performances as Alfred [TS]

00:22:12   he's just just delightful and helpful [TS]

00:22:15   and friendly and loving and you know and [TS]

00:22:17   and fatherly yeah exactly right i mean [TS]

00:22:20   we're jumping kinda head I i love the [TS]

00:22:22   scene where vicki and Bruce have their [TS]

00:22:25   kind of their date and then Alfred kind [TS]

00:22:27   of the day it starts with the this yet [TS]

00:22:29   whether the judge with joke Adams jokes [TS]

00:22:31   shot rather the long ends of the table [TS]

00:22:33   into classic and then they go from that [TS]

00:22:35   to like hanging out in the kitchen with [TS]

00:22:37   Alfred so nice i like that a lot [TS]

00:22:40   that's that's because that's Bruce Wayne [TS]

00:22:42   getting over himself for getting over [TS]

00:22:43   his I think it's getting over his view [TS]

00:22:46   of himself and like he should be and [TS]

00:22:49   then just being like they I like how you [TS]

00:22:51   actually see him like pick up his plate [TS]

00:22:53   and his wine glass and be like come on [TS]

00:22:54   let's go and then cut to their in this [TS]

00:22:57   much warmer kind of wood table little [TS]

00:23:00   light light wood and then like a kitchen [TS]

00:23:02   or something with Alfred it's great and [TS]

00:23:04   just before that that great line when [TS]

00:23:07   Vicki says that you know I don't think [TS]

00:23:09   this mansion is very much it is this [TS]

00:23:12   like you at all and bruce says some of [TS]

00:23:16   it is very much me know it's it's it's [TS]

00:23:19   very there some there since this is not [TS]

00:23:23   going to be considered a subtle movie by [TS]

00:23:25   a long shot right there are but there [TS]

00:23:28   are subtleties in Michael Keaton's [TS]

00:23:30   performance [TS]

00:23:31   yeah i agree i agree there's a lot of [TS]

00:23:33   little nice stuff a lot of less stuff [TS]

00:23:35   with Michael Keaton and Michael Michael [TS]

00:23:36   cough the okay so yeah we should talk [TS]

00:23:40   about Jack Nicholson as jack napier and [TS]

00:23:43   he becomes he becomes the Joker unsubtle [TS]

00:23:46   half of the no it'sit's not i meannot a [TS]

00:23:48   carton eckhardt who I didn't like gets [TS]

00:23:51   shot by jack in a scene at the access [TS]

00:23:53   chemical plant which i also just to say [TS]

00:23:56   again that i don't like that character [TS]

00:23:58   before he gets shot he's like acting [TS]

00:24:00   like a zombie he's just kind of moving [TS]

00:24:01   very slowly and kind of going in and [TS]

00:24:04   it's I don't understand that carry I [TS]

00:24:05   don't even know why that character is [TS]

00:24:06   there it's really bad but but the Joker [TS]

00:24:09   so jack napier who is revealed late in [TS]

00:24:12   the movie in a coincidence that's [TS]

00:24:14   probably unnecessary is the person who [TS]

00:24:16   shot [TS]

00:24:16   Bruce Wayne's parents yeah [TS]

00:24:19   f words about that later yeah well we'll [TS]

00:24:21   get it will circle around that but here [TS]

00:24:23   he he you know there's a shootout he [TS]

00:24:26   gets hit by a ricochet Batman tries to [TS]

00:24:29   capture catch him but he drops into the [TS]

00:24:32   chemicals and is is dead and will never [TS]

00:24:35   see him again except of course he [TS]

00:24:36   resurfaces with the the white face and [TS]

00:24:41   is the is the Joker so they got my [TS]

00:24:44   understanding is that they backed up a [TS]

00:24:46   truck money to Jack Nicholson's house [TS]

00:24:48   and they said you can be in our movie [TS]

00:24:50   will pay you a lot of money you can go [TS]

00:24:53   to all the laker games will make sure [TS]

00:24:54   that we schedule around you and we limit [TS]

00:24:56   the amount of time you have to spend on [TS]

00:24:57   this movie but you know it was quite a [TS]

00:25:00   coup to get the guy who was basically [TS]

00:25:02   considered the best or one of the what [TS]

00:25:05   two or three best actors on the planet [TS]

00:25:08   to be in their little superhero movie we [TS]

00:25:11   got a golden globe nomination he even [TS]

00:25:12   got Top Billing yeah mmm yeah absolutely [TS]

00:25:15   and that Joker's a plum role right i [TS]

00:25:17   mean this is this is this isn't this [TS]

00:25:20   isn't a role that won an Oscar for [TS]

00:25:22   somebody else to write it is a quite a [TS]

00:25:24   role to bite to chew off to bite on [TS]

00:25:27   jewel I don't know to shoot there's a [TS]

00:25:29   lot of chewing scenery going on really [TS]

00:25:30   is what's happening again [TS]

00:25:31   it's quite a roll yeah when Jack [TS]

00:25:33   Nicholson puts his all into it and then [TS]

00:25:35   some [TS]

00:25:35   and this early in the movie he's also [TS]

00:25:38   really really good as jack napier yeah [TS]

00:25:41   and that's that the-the-the minutes the [TS]

00:25:46   unhinged miss that's just sort of in the [TS]

00:25:49   background waiting to be released after [TS]

00:25:51   he takes a bath you know he he's a [TS]

00:25:54   plausible gangster villain and then then [TS]

00:25:59   he just he just cuts loose he gets [TS]

00:26:01   behind the makeup and he just what's [TS]

00:26:04   that what's that phrase you use a lot [TS]

00:26:06   Jason turns into the skin just admits to [TS]

00:26:08   it you know you just gotta go with it [TS]

00:26:10   right [TS]

00:26:11   yes he's a jack napier zile operated on [TS]

00:26:14   by a German doctor who has a very bad [TS]

00:26:17   set of tools it looks more like [TS]

00:26:19   something you get info and you can get [TS]

00:26:21   into Medical why they really did a heck [TS]

00:26:23   of a job and I think those tools for [TS]

00:26:25   what you used to like punch holes of [TS]

00:26:26   letting up but that was that was what [TS]

00:26:30   tim burton was stocking up for Edward [TS]

00:26:32   Scissorhands so it's bad but that's bad [TS]

00:26:33   news for Jack Palance he's not gonna [TS]

00:26:35   make it because uh because jack napier [TS]

00:26:38   has come back from the dead he knows [TS]

00:26:39   that he he was sent to the axis chemical [TS]

00:26:41   plant as a setup because he was stepping [TS]

00:26:45   out with with his girl [TS]

00:26:47   jerry hall so sugar bumps sugar bumps [TS]

00:26:51   just putting it out there and so yeah so [TS]

00:26:53   he kills a he kills Jack Palance I had [TS]

00:26:56   to jagannatha told me to kill jack [TS]

00:26:58   palance and says wait till they get a [TS]

00:27:01   load of me but interesting decision by [TS]

00:27:04   Jack Nicholson an interesting decision [TS]

00:27:05   by tim burton to leave it in at and I [TS]

00:27:08   I'd say this is a representative of how [TS]

00:27:10   far they let Nicholson go with this [TS]

00:27:14   he doesn't just say wait till they get a [TS]

00:27:15   load of me he then goes whoo whoop em [TS]

00:27:21   haha and they just leave it all in just [TS]

00:27:24   letting you know for sure I'm insane but [TS]

00:27:27   it's not even that he's saying wait till [TS]

00:27:29   they get a load of me its weight only [TS]

00:27:31   get a load of me he follows it up with a [TS]

00:27:35   sound and then another weird sound a [TS]

00:27:38   maniacal laugh and tim burton's like [TS]

00:27:39   yeah we're just gonna keep all that in [TS]

00:27:41   just let a roll there's a dance he does [TS]

00:27:43   when he leaves one of the seems that [TS]

00:27:45   it's just like it blows my mind that [TS]

00:27:47   that's that's this that's in there is a [TS]

00:27:49   few times where Nicholson is just [TS]

00:27:51   goofing around at the end of the team [TS]

00:27:52   they leave it in there is the time he [TS]

00:27:53   tells his really loyal henchmen in a [TS]

00:27:56   black Palace imitation you my number one [TS]

00:28:00   guy he and then the guy leaves and [TS]

00:28:03   nickel just standing there going [TS]

00:28:04   do-do-do-do-do-do VD just move it off [TS]

00:28:10   but the Joker could just be goofing off [TS]

00:28:12   let's leave it in its great he is not [TS]

00:28:15   concerned about what like there's a lot [TS]

00:28:17   where he's just a room by himself but [TS]

00:28:19   it's like no peace still going he does [TS]

00:28:21   not need an audience but when he has an [TS]

00:28:23   audio yeah it goes up to love even [TS]

00:28:24   bigger [TS]

00:28:25   yeah like it when they hit the museum [TS]

00:28:28   okay here's what we're doing guys [TS]

00:28:30   oh yeah let's see what else in there [TS]

00:28:33   Bruce Bruce lies to vicki vale after [TS]

00:28:37   they've spent the night together [TS]

00:28:38   I says he's got to go out of town but [TS]

00:28:40   Alfred [TS]

00:28:41   basically gives gives that away awkward [TS]

00:28:45   like yeah yeah that was that was well [TS]

00:28:49   you you're supposed to let your Butler [TS]

00:28:50   know that you've gotta yeah you [TS]

00:28:53   should've gone with it though i suppose [TS]

00:28:54   i'm thinking that this alfred was not a [TS]

00:28:56   former spy i think it offered in this is [TS]

00:28:58   not used to Bruce Wayne as a woman i was [TS]

00:29:02   a playboy right so much so he doesn't [TS]

00:29:04   have the moves down it like oh yes we [TS]

00:29:06   are going out of town [TS]

00:29:07   ya soon as Bruce has a girlfriend [TS]

00:29:09   girlfriend gets brought down to the bad [TS]

00:29:12   hey so alpha tango what so that you've [TS]

00:29:15   got a girl now [TS]

00:29:16   yeah but there's no they don't have any [TS]

00:29:19   pop formal policies written up it's a [TS]

00:29:21   problem I owe the Joker has a meeting of [TS]

00:29:24   all the crime lords in ya Gotham City [TS]

00:29:26   they have a little meeting little table [TS]

00:29:27   gang of gangs yeah I love his vanity [TS]

00:29:30   that he's got the flesh-colored makeup [TS]

00:29:33   plastered on top of his chalk white skin [TS]

00:29:35   and this one and hit that looks even [TS]

00:29:37   more creepy that's one of my favorite [TS]

00:29:39   things is that his skin is naturally [TS]

00:29:41   white with the smile but sometimes he [TS]

00:29:43   puts makeup on to have it look normal [TS]

00:29:45   and then later on the movie tells Batman [TS]

00:29:48   i have taken off my makeup [TS]

00:29:50   let's see if you can take off yours [TS]

00:29:51   except he hasn't taken off his makeup [TS]

00:29:53   he's put more makeup on right yeah well [TS]

00:29:57   it's it's not it's not that it's vanity [TS]

00:29:59   it's he's he he knows nobody knows what [TS]

00:30:02   he looks like yet anybody also wants to [TS]

00:30:05   freak them out as the makeup starts to [TS]

00:30:07   crack and peel away the smile looks [TS]

00:30:10   pretty freaked out about to me [TS]

00:30:13   yeah weird prosthetic it is weird he [TS]

00:30:16   killed he kills a guy with the joy [TS]

00:30:17   buzzer [TS]

00:30:18   you mentioned the you're my number one [TS]

00:30:22   guy and all that Bob I enjoy Bob [TS]

00:30:24   throughout this movie is not right now [TS]

00:30:26   he is a little bit Larry Darrell and [TS]

00:30:28   Darrell but he's quite enjoyable as just [TS]

00:30:31   loyal sidekick guy who keeps saying [TS]

00:30:33   things his lines are all like yes sir [TS]

00:30:36   that's it that's all Bob does i have [TS]

00:30:38   watched him for years I saw him on WKRP [TS]

00:30:42   in the first season and when [TS]

00:30:44   wow that's a really weird guy huh and [TS]

00:30:47   then he was also in a show called best [TS]

00:30:49   of the west from the makers of taxi [TS]

00:30:51   which was a Western thing and he played [TS]

00:30:53   a henchman named fraud [TS]

00:30:55   and that was delightful it's tracy [TS]

00:30:58   Walter is the name of the actor enjoyed [TS]

00:31:00   when the Joker's gang shows up to the [TS]

00:31:01   point guns at all the boss leaders that [TS]

00:31:04   they already have embroidered jackets [TS]

00:31:06   with like patches of the Joker's face [TS]

00:31:08   it's like that's how you know they're [TS]

00:31:10   good management group is that they've [TS]

00:31:11   already like day one we've got invited [TS]

00:31:13   jackets ready to go like the movies of [TS]

00:31:16   marketing behavior yeah yeah that's [TS]

00:31:18   Joker's got all sorts of stuff will see [TS]

00:31:21   even more stuff the Joker's got ready to [TS]

00:31:23   go ready to deploy he's he's crafted [TS]

00:31:25   people in both senses of the word [TS]

00:31:27   oh he's just my type yeah so let's see [TS]

00:31:30   what else I mean jack napier then [TS]

00:31:32   attacks various gangsters Bruce Wayne is [TS]

00:31:34   is stunned and shocked by this Batman [TS]

00:31:38   gets all the headlines even though [TS]

00:31:41   Napier's attacked all the gangsters he's [TS]

00:31:43   very upset that we get this town needs [TS]

00:31:45   an enema that line happens here in this [TS]

00:31:48   in this area again jack nicholson what [TS]

00:31:50   can you say just yeah he's clearing the [TS]

00:31:54   trailer [TS]

00:31:55   yeah well here is the trailer right be [TS]

00:31:58   he's a whole both of these movies have a [TS]

00:32:00   lot of press conferences in them like a [TS]

00:32:02   lot of press conferences in them a lot [TS]

00:32:04   of on the steps of City Hall the one [TS]

00:32:06   that I find the weirdest is that there [TS]

00:32:08   is the Mafia press conference that the [TS]

00:32:10   Joker and his mind to people that that [TS]

00:32:14   one that one confused me a little bit [TS]

00:32:15   but again i did not live in Gotham in [TS]

00:32:18   1980 night I maybe that's just business [TS]

00:32:20   as usual but like yeah if I'm if I'm [TS]

00:32:22   running the organized crime i would hold [TS]

00:32:24   less press conferences what I'm saying [TS]

00:32:26   maybe none maybe none maybe I mean look [TS]

00:32:29   just throwing that out there huh that's [TS]

00:32:31   the one where nobody notices the [TS]

00:32:32   extremely amateurish minds around the [TS]

00:32:34   place right [TS]

00:32:35   yep yep yep you know again I guys you [TS]

00:32:40   guys are older than me i'm just i'm [TS]

00:32:42   assuming a lot about what 1998-1999 was [TS]

00:32:44   like there weren't that many minds all [TS]

00:32:47   the way there are mines and how many [TS]

00:32:48   what was the mind to press conference [TS]

00:32:50   ratio is what i mask it well let me tell [TS]

00:32:52   you about a couple named shields and [TS]

00:32:54   Yarnell era para primes and they were [TS]

00:32:59   huge they had their own show [TS]

00:33:01   they did have yeah the seventies yes [TS]

00:33:03   they did a god I'm suddenly feeling [TS]

00:33:05   younger is anybody there [TS]

00:33:06   there's a point at which vicki vale [TS]

00:33:08   suddenly is way more interested in using [TS]

00:33:11   her newspapers resources to look up [TS]

00:33:12   information about her boyfriend then to [TS]

00:33:15   investigate Batman is she supposed to be [TS]

00:33:17   doing she seems to have a lot of free [TS]

00:33:18   range from her previous highly [TS]

00:33:21   successful photojournalism run in that [TS]

00:33:23   island that she just came back from we [TS]

00:33:25   haven't actually talked a whole lot [TS]

00:33:26   about Vicki Vale and I think there's a [TS]

00:33:29   reason for the hands [TS]

00:33:30   I have to know you think which are an [TS]

00:33:34   amazing apartment [TS]

00:33:35   yes and in one scene she has a Padawan [TS]

00:33:37   braid yeah okay just one little braids [TS]

00:33:40   on the side of her head going down over [TS]

00:33:42   her shoulder she might be a jet by now i [TS]

00:33:44   remember being rather irritated at one [TS]

00:33:47   point watching the movie at some point [TS]

00:33:49   it may not have been the first time but [TS]

00:33:50   at a subsequent watching because when [TS]

00:33:53   they introduce her she's you know shown [TS]

00:33:57   to be very capable award-winning [TS]

00:33:59   globe-trotting photojournalist looking [TS]

00:34:01   for the the heavy hard stories [TS]

00:34:04   yeah um and so it's yet Robert walls [TS]

00:34:07   character you know somewhat [TS]

00:34:08   understandably you're going to chase [TS]

00:34:10   Batman it doesn't quite seem to fit [TS]

00:34:13   um and then about halfway through the [TS]

00:34:17   movie or so all of a sudden there's [TS]

00:34:19   apparently nothing left for kim basinger [TS]

00:34:21   to do then scream or dangle from a Ledge [TS]

00:34:25   or cord or something or faint and it's [TS]

00:34:27   like you're not [TS]

00:34:29   she was doing well she could have [TS]

00:34:30   contributed the amount of her dialogue [TS]

00:34:33   that is her screaming in reaction to [TS]

00:34:34   something is like a lot began well okay [TS]

00:34:37   so I like the scene where she's on the [TS]

00:34:40   rooftop and she immediately starts [TS]

00:34:42   taking pictures of Batman fighting in [TS]

00:34:43   the alley right that's good news sense [TS]

00:34:45   like that that's the scene where I'm [TS]

00:34:47   like okay she's doing her job and of [TS]

00:34:48   course right then uses the Old Cape [TS]

00:34:50   trick to steal the film out of her bra [TS]

00:34:53   but I be on Cape trick you okay yeah [TS]

00:34:57   that does that a lot he's like who [TS]

00:34:59   there's a cape and what happens then [TS]

00:35:01   nobody knows it's under the Cape was a [TS]

00:35:03   mystery that's how Batman does it all [TS]

00:35:05   sorts of magic tricks [TS]

00:35:07   anyway so that's good but then you're [TS]

00:35:09   right a other than that she's mostly a [TS]

00:35:13   damsel i do think that when she when [TS]

00:35:15   Alfred brings her into the Batcave [TS]

00:35:17   toward the end but that's a nice [TS]

00:35:20   where she's being like supportive I i [TS]

00:35:22   find her her support for Bruce nice but [TS]

00:35:25   again that's being supportive and not [TS]

00:35:26   you know but at but at the same time [TS]

00:35:29   she's kind of like breaking down his [TS]

00:35:31   shell so there are moments in there [TS]

00:35:33   whenever she's put in any sort of like [TS]

00:35:34   part of the plot like the wind with the [TS]

00:35:37   Joker the art museum is the most [TS]

00:35:39   disappointing one because although she [TS]

00:35:40   she gives a push back to him a little [TS]

00:35:43   bit you know like when when she goes to [TS]

00:35:45   comfort him with because he got covered [TS]

00:35:47   in water and he's melting like it's just [TS]

00:35:50   dumb like why would you do that in jan [TS]

00:35:52   there's also lots of lots of the [TS]

00:35:53   screaming lots again we're almost at the [TS]

00:35:56   Museum attack actually but I i wanted to [TS]

00:36:00   mention a couple other things I enjoy [TS]

00:36:02   the new TV news as we see it in this [TS]

00:36:07   movie not the first off the outfit on [TS]

00:36:10   the the first anchor woman who dies is [TS]

00:36:13   staggering [TS]

00:36:15   it looks like it's like a jacket with [TS]

00:36:18   shoulder pads but it looks literally [TS]

00:36:20   looks like she's wearing a parka it is [TS]

00:36:22   so huge and padded it is amazing [TS]

00:36:24   she's not the only one can be a singer [TS]

00:36:26   and Robert wool yeah there's a lot of [TS]

00:36:29   shoulder pad action in this room well [TS]

00:36:30   it's against wasn't talking head suit [TS]

00:36:32   like he's nowhere near the outside is [TS]

00:36:34   what it is but that one first [TS]

00:36:38   anchorwoman is the most extreme of all [TS]

00:36:40   of them but i really loved the joke [TS]

00:36:42   where they discovered that the cosmetics [TS]

00:36:44   are poisoned and they don't know exactly [TS]

00:36:45   where the poison is and then for the [TS]

00:36:48   rest of the the movie the TV anchors [TS]

00:36:50   have no makeup on and they've been made [TS]

00:36:52   to have blemishes and things all over [TS]

00:36:54   their faces that kills me after your [TS]

00:36:56   hair their hair looks awful [TS]

00:36:58   so it doesn't need to be there because [TS]

00:37:00   they don't even have combs anymore it's [TS]

00:37:02   just a joke [TS]

00:37:02   yeah and it's mainly mainly affects TV [TS]

00:37:05   anchors Vicki Vale is doing fine [TS]

00:37:06   Tom you know she's not what she imports [TS]

00:37:08   all of her husband watches ok thank you [TS]

00:37:10   and can accepted and so we're off to the [TS]

00:37:13   museum so uh Vicki give Alfred get a [TS]

00:37:16   call saying she'll be 10 minutes late to [TS]

00:37:18   the museum but to meet Bruce but that is [TS]

00:37:20   a he's not meeting her there so that's a [TS]

00:37:22   bad sign i think that this looks like a [TS]

00:37:24   job for Batman and what happens is the [TS]

00:37:27   gas the Joker the Joker attacks they [TS]

00:37:31   gasp the museum [TS]

00:37:33   and then immediately the Joker and [TS]

00:37:34   enhancement after everybody drops [TS]

00:37:36   Vicki's got a little mask that she's [TS]

00:37:38   been given by a in a little package and [TS]

00:37:41   told put this on immediately everybody [TS]

00:37:43   drops because of the gas and then the [TS]

00:37:44   Joker and his people walk in which is [TS]

00:37:46   interesting because you think there [TS]

00:37:47   would still be gas but they have no [TS]

00:37:49   masks [TS]

00:37:49   it's fine it's fine it's time for a [TS]

00:37:52   dance party and finally Prince shows up [TS]

00:37:55   is this good time to talk about princes [TS]

00:37:56   concrete yeah this is the time because [TS]

00:37:59   they play they play a song arm on the [TS]

00:38:02   boom box as they go through and deface [TS]

00:38:05   all the art or Sorry Sorry improve the [TS]

00:38:08   art as Joker would tell us and we play a [TS]

00:38:11   prince song as as that goes on there's [TS]

00:38:13   another prints on later during the [TS]

00:38:14   parade prince was in quite a coup was [TS]

00:38:18   commissioned to basically do in a [TS]

00:38:20   batman-themed album and those songs [TS]

00:38:22   would be in the movie and then the end [TS]

00:38:25   and then what happened was Tim Burton [TS]

00:38:27   said I'm not really interested in that [TS]

00:38:29   you have you heard my boy Elfman he's [TS]

00:38:33   got a really good theme [TS]

00:38:34   yeah well Danny Elfman we could talk [TS]

00:38:36   about that i think that i think this is [TS]

00:38:38   one of my favorite movie scores of all [TS]

00:38:39   time I love the danny elfman score but [TS]

00:38:43   it is kind of amazing that they got an [TS]

00:38:45   entire album by Prince that a lot of [TS]

00:38:48   people really love and it's it's some of [TS]

00:38:52   it is played in the background in a [TS]

00:38:53   couple of scenes but there's literally [TS]

00:38:55   these two scenes where prince comes to [TS]

00:38:58   the fore at all and it's expressed like [TS]

00:39:01   part of the plot right right thats that [TS]

00:39:04   the only use that that Tim Burton has [TS]

00:39:06   four Prince's like if they're playing [TS]

00:39:08   music in the movie will play a prince [TS]

00:39:12   song but otherwise forget it [TS]

00:39:15   otherwise it's just going to be score [TS]

00:39:16   did they pick Prince just because he [TS]

00:39:18   likes purple and the Joker likes purple [TS]

00:39:20   I don't all i think this was again just [TS]

00:39:24   a marketing uh you know the marketing [TS]

00:39:27   behemoth kicking in and he was he was [TS]

00:39:29   like the biggest thing on warner music [TS]

00:39:31   more music yeah and they said let's [TS]

00:39:34   let's make this energy happen [TS]

00:39:35   yeah and he played saturday night live [TS]

00:39:39   during the promotion for this stuff and [TS]

00:39:41   all I can remember is that he did party [TS]

00:39:43   man [TS]

00:39:44   and.and who entrust and he's performing [TS]

00:39:49   those songs on the SNL stage with the [TS]

00:39:52   giant Batman that logo of course lying [TS]

00:39:56   behind them because you know I don't [TS]

00:39:58   know who is intended to be bigger at [TS]

00:40:00   this point prince or Batman [TS]

00:40:02   merchandising well i think that was [TS]

00:40:04   where Prince got his idea to change his [TS]

00:40:05   name to a giant symbol gonna be [TS]

00:40:08   unfortunately batman logo was was taken [TS]

00:40:11   so we couldn't do that [TS]

00:40:12   Batman princess batman logo hit number [TS]

00:40:14   one on the billboard album chart it was [TS]

00:40:16   it was a it was a big seller even though [TS]

00:40:18   you can barely hear in the movie I just [TS]

00:40:20   I I wonder what movie would be like I I [TS]

00:40:23   feel like a modern a more modern movie [TS]

00:40:25   would have gone all the way with like [TS]

00:40:28   Prince wall-to-wall and I'm not sure [TS]

00:40:30   whether that would have been better or [TS]

00:40:31   worse but it would have been very [TS]

00:40:33   different from what we get with with [TS]

00:40:35   these two to the two tracks being played [TS]

00:40:37   trust and Parliament and and the music I [TS]

00:40:39   mean just bad dance was the video for [TS]

00:40:41   that was what like 45 minutes or even [TS]

00:40:43   six minutes and it was on every hour on [TS]

00:40:47   mtv furling three days i'm telling you [TS]

00:40:50   the marketing for this movie brilliant i [TS]

00:40:52   own a lot of bad songs easily the worst [TS]

00:40:55   song i own and that means it's worse [TS]

00:40:59   than all of disco Evita is a cover of [TS]

00:41:03   batt dance cover we have when i worked [TS]

00:41:06   at a movie theater we had a CD of a [TS]

00:41:08   generic bands versions of various movie [TS]

00:41:12   theme songs because they didn't want to [TS]

00:41:15   pay for the full rights and some poor [TS]

00:41:17   girl had to record it and not use any of [TS]

00:41:19   the samples so they had to get a new [TS]

00:41:21   actress into the oh my do to go [TS]

00:41:24   vicki vale vale be keeping that makes me [TS]

00:41:27   feel like I wasted my time memorizing [TS]

00:41:30   that song back in the day he got ways to [TS]

00:41:33   shut the investment ship you can get [TS]

00:41:34   that back by creating your own cover [TS]

00:41:36   version you've invested in yourself [TS]

00:41:38   every day here from now on they couldn't [TS]

00:41:40   even be bothered to playback dance over [TS]

00:41:42   the end credits [TS]

00:41:43   yeah yeah I know right i mean [TS]

00:41:45   that'sthat's i do think that it's a [TS]

00:41:47   missed opportunity there it's also just [TS]

00:41:49   a sign of the left hand and the right [TS]

00:41:50   hand not knowing what each other was [TS]

00:41:51   doing that by tim burton well so I have [TS]

00:41:55   a lot of theories about this movie that [TS]

00:41:56   maybe i'll get to before we [TS]

00:41:58   it's a batman returns that but there's [TS]

00:42:00   definitely the conflict between the [TS]

00:42:02   studio and the marketing and the giant [TS]

00:42:04   machine and Tim Burton who likes to make [TS]

00:42:06   weird quirky tweet little movies there [TS]

00:42:10   was a lot of conflict creatively about [TS]

00:42:12   this movie and I think it's amazing that [TS]

00:42:14   that it turns out as well as it does [TS]

00:42:16   given all of that [TS]

00:42:18   well I mean you had John Peters [TS]

00:42:20   producing or executive producing and he [TS]

00:42:23   was kind of insane mom you know and I'm [TS]

00:42:26   sure prince was his idea and and going [TS]

00:42:29   here let's do this and let's do that [TS]

00:42:31   let's do this and and I know that the [TS]

00:42:33   ending was not tim burton's idea that [TS]

00:42:36   wasn't in the script it was John Peters [TS]

00:42:38   going hey would it be awesome if they [TS]

00:42:39   like climb to the top of the cathedral [TS]

00:42:41   and the whole thing took place up there [TS]

00:42:42   and why do we kill Vicki Vale and then [TS]

00:42:44   Batman will get really angry [TS]

00:42:46   it's like okay and and he went ahead and [TS]

00:42:50   had the thing constructed without [TS]

00:42:52   clearing it with anybody was just like [TS]

00:42:54   here this is gonna be the end of the [TS]

00:42:55   movie and they actually and like they [TS]

00:42:59   asked to Burton's like why are we [TS]

00:43:00   climbing to the top of the thing because [TS]

00:43:02   i don't know we'll figure it out when [TS]

00:43:03   you get there and they had to redo that [TS]

00:43:06   so that's that's kinda like the movie a [TS]

00:43:07   microcosm the original screen [TS]

00:43:09   screenwriter was a guy named sam ham and [TS]

00:43:12   then a guy named warrants car and came [TS]

00:43:14   in after it so alliteration was [TS]

00:43:16   absolutely important while riding right [TS]

00:43:21   but I mean yeah thank you [TS]

00:43:22   I and my understanding is the Sam ham [TS]

00:43:25   script was fairly straight and you have [TS]

00:43:30   monkey you have lines that survived of [TS]

00:43:33   the the the rewrite and temperance [TS]

00:43:37   direction that get completely turned [TS]

00:43:39   over like the the Joker cylindrical e it [TS]

00:43:44   you might join me for a week after the [TS]

00:43:47   weird confrontation between Bruce Wayne [TS]

00:43:50   and the Joker and Vicki and he plays it [TS]

00:43:52   for Laughs things like that there is so [TS]

00:43:55   much dissonance in this movie between [TS]

00:43:59   temper and sensibilities and and the [TS]

00:44:01   screenwriters is this a serious movie or [TS]

00:44:05   is tim burton taking the piss out of [TS]

00:44:07   superheroes in general because he's Tim [TS]

00:44:10   Burton [TS]

00:44:11   you're right it'sit's it's amazing that [TS]

00:44:13   this movie is this is successful as it [TS]

00:44:15   is because these parts don't fit no no [TS]

00:44:20   they really don't know there are other [TS]

00:44:21   parts to that that will get 22 because [TS]

00:44:25   there's that the whole romantic comedy [TS]

00:44:26   part that comes back again later [TS]

00:44:28   that's like a totally other movie said [TS]

00:44:30   that also happens in here it's like When [TS]

00:44:33   Harry Met Sally if Harry was Batman [TS]

00:44:35   anyway [TS]

00:44:35   hey will but I don't know what she's [TS]

00:44:38   happy so the museum the museum scene i [TS]

00:44:42   like because it is this manic Joker [TS]

00:44:44   dancing around the prince and I think [TS]

00:44:45   that's pretty good [TS]

00:44:46   there's some great dialogue in here this [TS]

00:44:48   is this is quality Joker antics write [TS]

00:44:50   like this is the one-dollar bill i like [TS]

00:44:52   that that's pretty good [TS]

00:44:54   uh I don't know if it's art but i like [TS]

00:44:56   it like he says at that painting the [TS]

00:44:59   one-dollar bill and then a scene later [TS]

00:45:01   he says what he wants is to have his [TS]

00:45:03   face on the one-dollar bill and I like [TS]

00:45:05   to think the Joker just thought of it [TS]

00:45:06   because he just saw panting I like the [TS]

00:45:08   one where they go by the really weird [TS]

00:45:10   painting and he's like I I don't touch [TS]

00:45:11   this one I kinda like it [TS]

00:45:13   they move on its we're creating a move [TS]

00:45:16   on it's good and then and then I I like [TS]

00:45:18   how it all comes together where he tells [TS]

00:45:19   vicki vale I'm an artist I'm a car i'm a [TS]

00:45:22   card until someone dies that's what i do [TS]

00:45:25   and it's like all right I get the Joker [TS]

00:45:27   now is it a night Jerry Hall comes back [TS]

00:45:29   and Jerry Hall yeah exactly who he is [TS]

00:45:31   he's a he's really hide that she's [TS]

00:45:34   wearing them at why she wearing the mask [TS]

00:45:36   and she's acting all weird and then yeah [TS]

00:45:39   she just make it but that man comes to [TS]

00:45:42   say Vicky before we can get more time in [TS]

00:45:44   the in the museum but i just i love the [TS]

00:45:46   museum scene i love i love ya i love the [TS]

00:45:48   whole thing it's weird and and funny and [TS]

00:45:51   and yeah it's good and that leads [TS]

00:45:54   directly into a Batmobile that we have [TS]

00:45:56   never seen yeah that's right before him [TS]

00:45:59   that movie live one note which is the if [TS]

00:46:01   I had to say there's one perfect shot in [TS]

00:46:03   Batman it is probably my favorite shot [TS]

00:46:07   the movie is when he comes through the [TS]

00:46:09   skylight in the museum and the whole [TS]

00:46:11   Cape is like fully now like like you see [TS]

00:46:15   the whole Cape coming down i love that [TS]

00:46:17   that's great and then the whole thing [TS]

00:46:20   where he just sort of worth I think [TS]

00:46:22   wordlessly um [TS]

00:46:24   no just stands there and fires off as [TS]

00:46:26   very a lot of lot of gadgets and these [TS]

00:46:28   ones that ropes and then slides away and [TS]

00:46:30   out the door and then they get into [TS]

00:46:32   battle which has applied which is this [TS]

00:46:34   wacky again wacky modular CarDekho [TS]

00:46:38   high-tech Batmobile thing [TS]

00:46:40   yeah where did you find the Batmobile in [TS]

00:46:43   all versions for a Batman for decades [TS]

00:46:46   like immediately the comics like oh yeah [TS]

00:46:48   let's do that [TS]

00:46:49   yeah when they had man the animated [TS]

00:46:51   series oh no we're gonna look just like [TS]

00:46:53   this movie and have that bat will be [TS]

00:46:54   really until christian bale batman i [TS]

00:46:57   guess where it's a little more it so [TS]

00:46:59   it's it's a different wider kind of [TS]

00:47:01   platform thing but yeah that's cool cool [TS]

00:47:03   Batmobile huh cool when we said let's [TS]

00:47:05   stop having cool cars have an ugly tank [TS]

00:47:07   yep yeah i mean i really like the [TS]

00:47:09   animated version but this would be my [TS]

00:47:11   second favorite Batmobile so i mean i [TS]

00:47:13   like that it does not look like any [TS]

00:47:15   other car right it's it just looks crazy [TS]

00:47:18   yeah he didn't soup something up now [TS]

00:47:20   like this is a billion the whole way and [TS]

00:47:22   it doesn't even in the backyard and it [TS]

00:47:24   almost doesn't look like a car right [TS]

00:47:26   like it looks more like like a weird [TS]

00:47:27   shoe or something in a copper yeah [TS]

00:47:29   that's good [TS]

00:47:30   yeah it it's like out torpedo with wheel [TS]

00:47:33   yeah yeah it's a mash-up between the [TS]

00:47:34   chrysler building an sr-71 but it [TS]

00:47:38   doesn't look quite so good it looks [TS]

00:47:40   great when it's still but when they're [TS]

00:47:43   driving around with it i think that [TS]

00:47:45   every out this suspension to tell we [TS]

00:47:47   break down with it it's gonna be hard to [TS]

00:47:49   turn that thing on the link [TS]

00:47:50   yeah yeah it's not just the Batmobile [TS]

00:47:52   though they're there is the chase that [TS]

00:47:55   they go through their there is one [TS]

00:47:56   intersection that it goes through that I [TS]

00:47:59   I'm not kidding you is the most fake [TS]

00:48:02   looking set oh yeah I have never seen in [TS]

00:48:06   a movie where they're driving through [TS]

00:48:08   and it's like that is not a street that [TS]

00:48:11   is not available in public that is that [TS]

00:48:14   is that like that's a backlog but a lot [TS]

00:48:16   of this movie and and like some of the [TS]

00:48:18   street seems the parade to is the same [TS]

00:48:20   way again [TS]

00:48:21   where it is just super fake and like [TS]

00:48:24   like minimal effort was made here the [TS]

00:48:27   art direction for Gotham is great but [TS]

00:48:29   like they have like two intersections [TS]

00:48:31   right like they just did and I use them [TS]

00:48:33   over and over [TS]

00:48:34   and right like really go meet under that [TS]

00:48:36   bridge again yes a parade and the press [TS]

00:48:39   conferences and like you know that like [TS]

00:48:41   the outside of City Hall and the outside [TS]

00:48:43   of the like that movie theater like a [TS]

00:48:45   Chrysler want me to build a block and [TS]

00:48:47   that's able to block you can get away [TS]

00:48:48   with that sort of thing on Star Trek [TS]

00:48:50   cause also all corridors look the same [TS]

00:48:52   right but this this soundstage is so [TS]

00:48:55   distinctive not all your corridors can [TS]

00:48:57   be Crime Alley it doesn't work I'm going [TS]

00:49:00   to let us leave the beauty and without [TS]

00:49:01   distracting everybody with my crackpot [TS]

00:49:03   theory if people would like to hear my [TS]

00:49:04   crackpot theory email me how are you [TS]

00:49:07   you want some more email marketing or [TS]

00:49:10   you can tweet at Mangia Mangia never [TS]

00:49:12   actually quick and ask him for a [TS]

00:49:14   crackpot theory so they get digging in [TS]

00:49:17   an alley they get cotton ali-a Batman [TS]

00:49:21   decides to flee with Vicki up by by [TS]

00:49:24   firing his bat whatever-it-is rope thing [TS]

00:49:28   up and asked her how much she weighs so [TS]

00:49:31   that there's a wait joke that is made [TS]

00:49:33   with i rolled my eyes as well especially [TS]

00:49:35   you already had zip-lined with her like [TS]

00:49:37   you know [TS]

00:49:38   yeah I'm not your second you know this [TS]

00:49:39   is not your first rodeo like yeah he [TS]

00:49:42   should know the way we're making fat [TS]

00:49:44   jokes about Kim Basinger really I know [TS]

00:49:46   right [TS]

00:49:47   this is not the most feminist movies [TS]

00:49:50   yeah you don't say sharing like yes they [TS]

00:49:54   loud cheering like 200 pounds of our [TS]

00:49:56   chip is this the most feminist Batman [TS]

00:49:58   movie you see let's dig deeper on this [TS]

00:50:02   i would say it could be worse but it's [TS]

00:50:05   not great [TS]

00:50:06   mr. Drazen pieces now could this be what [TS]

00:50:09   could be worse but the way joke it [TS]

00:50:11   stands well you know like i said there [TS]

00:50:12   are moments with Vicki failing I'm like [TS]

00:50:14   alright that's good but yeah there are [TS]

00:50:16   other things that are not but I want to [TS]

00:50:18   talk about I want to talk about the [TS]

00:50:19   fights in the alley because there are a [TS]

00:50:20   whole bunch of Joker's henchmen who come [TS]

00:50:22   to fight Batman in the alley and they're [TS]

00:50:24   like there's like a fighter guy and then [TS]

00:50:27   there's like a ninja and Tony to answer [TS]

00:50:29   your question in the in the late [TS]

00:50:31   eighties in Gotham City [TS]

00:50:32   did we have a lot of ninjas in the [TS]

00:50:34   actual answers oh god yes yes there were [TS]

00:50:37   so many ninjas and there are some here [TS]

00:50:39   some of the henchmen turned out to be [TS]

00:50:40   ninjas everything I know about New York [TS]

00:50:43   City is formed from the Ninja Turtles [TS]

00:50:45   movie not the michael bay 1 and the [TS]

00:50:48   Warriors so i see i have no problems [TS]

00:50:50   with this scene so you're missing humble [TS]

00:50:52   and rocks which is any key component it [TS]

00:50:55   has the whole alpine part of New York [TS]

00:50:57   City its means and and here we see one [TS]

00:51:00   of the biggest limitations of this movie [TS]

00:51:02   that I never noticed back in 1989 but in [TS]

00:51:06   the days of the Marvel Cinematic [TS]

00:51:08   Universe i'm totally scene which is your [TS]

00:51:10   hero cannot move ya soon so damn big [TS]

00:51:15   these these fight scenes probably looked [TS]

00:51:18   great when we have nothing to compare [TS]

00:51:19   them to but he they're not moving you're [TS]

00:51:23   not moving [TS]

00:51:23   although the bad guys bad guys moving in [TS]

00:51:25   Batman like either steps out of the way [TS]

00:51:27   or just punches them because that's [TS]

00:51:28   about all he could I mean he gets shot [TS]

00:51:29   several times and I guess he's just [TS]

00:51:31   tough enough that they bounce often i [TS]

00:51:32   mean i can remember i am NOT approaching [TS]

00:51:35   this movie with the level of nostalgia [TS]

00:51:36   that the rest of the team here is and [TS]

00:51:39   yeah all these action sequences fall [TS]

00:51:41   pretty yes you're younger than us [TS]

00:51:43   yeah there's a scene where you can tell [TS]

00:51:45   what they wrote up was Batman beat up [TS]

00:51:47   all the thugs and in the background that [TS]

00:51:49   Joker dances with Vicki fail and it [TS]

00:51:51   looks great down and boy takes a long [TS]

00:51:55   time to beat up those thugs he can't [TS]

00:51:57   even bend your waist plus the books did [TS]

00:52:00   the usual thing and they went at a one [TS]

00:52:02   or two at a time [TS]

00:52:03   well it's sorted they're simple learning [TS]

00:52:04   center rules never thinks to swarm [TS]

00:52:06   answer one of them just falls through [TS]

00:52:08   the floor without touching him huh [TS]

00:52:10   that's the Batman that good so I mean [TS]

00:52:13   for me there's three pillars [TS]

00:52:15   Batman right okay tell me more alright [TS]

00:52:18   this is good [TS]

00:52:18   I mean we're getting some church a [TS]

00:52:19   Batman stuff going on here this good [TS]

00:52:21   ever know three pillars of Batman you [TS]

00:52:23   didn't stop me so here I go [TS]

00:52:25   gadgets detective work and you know [TS]

00:52:29   ninja skills this movie realize pretty [TS]

00:52:32   heavily on one pillar of Batman I i [TS]

00:52:35   would prefer to see a little bit more of [TS]

00:52:36   an even distribution across the three [TS]

00:52:38   pillars is what I'm saying [TS]

00:52:39   so are you saying you want a more [TS]

00:52:41   holistic but i want ya i want a more [TS]

00:52:43   complete Batman if you are looking to [TS]

00:52:46   become think how can you be a more [TS]

00:52:48   complete Batman right to modify ashley [TS]

00:52:51   and i'll forward that to me [TS]

00:52:54   possibly with some editorializing yeah [TS]

00:52:58   mmm yeah the the suit this i think the [TS]

00:53:01   suit looks great but he can't handing [TS]

00:53:04   them know well it looks great when he's [TS]

00:53:06   not moving in which is most of the time [TS]

00:53:09   ready kazi and burton thought anything [TS]

00:53:11   else didn't look threatening enough and [TS]

00:53:13   see you know looking threatening is not [TS]

00:53:16   the the key thing with Batman he's got [TS]

00:53:20   to be able to move [TS]

00:53:21   yeah but one thing you think of when you [TS]

00:53:23   think of bats is a mobility I I do [TS]

00:53:29   really like the scene that comes up here [TS]

00:53:31   when they're riding back to the Batcave [TS]

00:53:33   in the Batmobile and kim basinger starts [TS]

00:53:36   to look at him and his space and all [TS]

00:53:38   that he turns on the light [TS]

00:53:39   yes and it shines in her face so she [TS]

00:53:41   can't see and she kind of raises her [TS]

00:53:43   hand and that and the the score comes up [TS]

00:53:45   and they blast through this you know [TS]

00:53:48   through the the down that country road [TS]

00:53:50   and into the hidden entryway to the [TS]

00:53:52   Batcave i love that whole thing that's [TS]

00:53:54   like super mystery Batman he's not going [TS]

00:53:57   to let you look at his head his mouth [TS]

00:53:59   and chin to figure out who is there's a [TS]

00:54:01   light he's got to stop people from doing [TS]

00:54:03   that if they if he takes a passenger on [TS]

00:54:05   in the Batcave he keeps turning his head [TS]

00:54:07   to keep himself shadow tushy gaseum yeah [TS]

00:54:10   it's a superhero actually worried about [TS]

00:54:12   whether or not people can see his face [TS]

00:54:14   yes as opposed to the the as opposed to [TS]

00:54:17   Batman Returns which we'll get to in a [TS]

00:54:19   minute or any of your movie spider-man [TS]

00:54:21   these days it could be that mask in [TS]

00:54:23   media and the drop of a hat [TS]

00:54:25   yeah hot [TS]

00:54:26   it is so I romantic comedy starts [TS]

00:54:30   suddenly there's a there's a whole plot [TS]

00:54:34   where Bruce is trying to tell her that I [TS]

00:54:37   that he's Batman he's gonna admit it [TS]

00:54:40   he's gonna let let let that loose [TS]

00:54:43   except he can't do it and and uh she [TS]

00:54:47   says he's a jerk and then and then it [TS]

00:54:50   says so shut up and he pushes her down [TS]

00:54:51   which I'm like yeah that's not actually [TS]

00:54:53   that cool but ok it's the eighties it's [TS]

00:54:55   a romantic comedy alright and then he's [TS]

00:54:57   he struggles to get things out and she [TS]

00:54:59   thinks he's married but he's trying to [TS]

00:55:01   admit and in fact would probably have [TS]

00:55:03   said on that man at some point if the [TS]

00:55:06   Joker doesn't knock on the door and then [TS]

00:55:08   our romantic comedy becomes a sort of [TS]

00:55:10   weird romantic comedy crime tension [TS]

00:55:15   thing [TS]

00:55:16   NAA source i will cite later says that [TS]

00:55:20   this was kind of any impactors improv [TS]

00:55:24   moment in the movie and it just doesn't [TS]

00:55:27   fit by this point Robert will have been [TS]

00:55:29   off the screen for a good 30 40 minutes [TS]

00:55:32   and he's not coming [TS]

00:55:33   yeah he's not it was a very good 32 [TS]

00:55:36   different hits just a different movie in [TS]

00:55:38   this in this part there's that I mean [TS]

00:55:40   there's some nice bits in here uh the [TS]

00:55:43   the Bruce Wayne when he comes in he says [TS]

00:55:45   he comments on our honor apart right [TS]

00:55:47   nice apartment right Monty nice place [TS]

00:55:49   lots of space and then so when the Joker [TS]

00:55:51   comes in he says nice place lots of [TS]

00:55:53   space and like they say the same things [TS]

00:55:55   that was that was kinda funny but you [TS]

00:55:57   know Bruce Wayne provokes the Joker come [TS]

00:56:00   on let's get nuts [TS]

00:56:02   I don't really understand why he does [TS]

00:56:05   that [TS]

00:56:05   it seems weird is the plan is for him to [TS]

00:56:08   be shot [TS]

00:56:09   we're right where he has the little [TS]

00:56:11   metal tray so that he doesn't die [TS]

00:56:13   I don't know it is a little coincidental [TS]

00:56:16   yeah I I don't understand why this scene [TS]

00:56:19   is the way it is because because if [TS]

00:56:21   anyone if the Joker is going to shoot [TS]

00:56:24   anyone anywhere [TS]

00:56:26   why would he aim for the heart he would [TS]

00:56:27   do like various parts of the body i want [TS]

00:56:29   you twitch and you know yet he would [TS]

00:56:31   name you and make you hurt until you're [TS]

00:56:33   coming man [TS]

00:56:34   it's Chinatown it's trying to town shake [TS]

00:56:36   at my only explanation and it's not a [TS]

00:56:38   good one [TS]

00:56:39   is the idea that that Bruce Wayne is [TS]

00:56:42   trying to be chivalrous and by time to [TS]

00:56:45   figure this out [TS]

00:56:46   yeah and if you keep intention on [TS]

00:56:48   himself and not Vicki less likely that [TS]

00:56:50   she's going to get her that but like I [TS]

00:56:52   said that still weak as water and it's a [TS]

00:56:54   really strange scene and it's because [TS]

00:56:57   they need the Joker to shoot Bruce there [TS]

00:57:00   so that he can say the dance with the [TS]

00:57:01   devil line [TS]

00:57:02   yeah which he always knows when he kills [TS]

00:57:04   people accept all those other times when [TS]

00:57:06   he doesn't say we kill people have a [TS]

00:57:08   right to killed several people by this [TS]

00:57:10   one saat yeah also that one time he said [TS]

00:57:12   it and pointed the gun to get in and [TS]

00:57:14   didn't didn't do it so you know yet but [TS]

00:57:16   he always telling you always done if you [TS]

00:57:18   missed it was being prepared [TS]

00:57:20   ok so he's not the most consistent guys [TS]

00:57:22   now I'm just I'm just grumbling about [TS]

00:57:25   that plot point so when he says that [TS]

00:57:27   though Michael Keaton does reaction that [TS]

00:57:29   is kind of a cool moment [TS]

00:57:31   speaking of the Joker's a brilliant [TS]

00:57:32   plans let's talk about his latest [TS]

00:57:33   brilliant plan which is he's gonna have [TS]

00:57:35   a parade where he's going to drop 20 [TS]

00:57:37   million in cash on the crowd for the [TS]

00:57:40   party [TS]

00:57:41   that's the a4 everything party or [TS]

00:57:42   whatever and uh it's uh it's weird [TS]

00:57:47   because very long [TS]

00:57:48   yeah yeah because first off first of its [TS]

00:57:51   kind of unclear about what's going on [TS]

00:57:52   and and the beginning again i'm going to [TS]

00:57:53   point out at the beginning of that scene [TS]

00:57:55   when the parade get started there's like [TS]

00:57:57   seven people there for the citywide raid [TS]

00:57:59   with 20 million catch seven people [TS]

00:58:02   no cops the same intersection that we've [TS]

00:58:04   seen several times before and a very [TS]

00:58:06   small like two lane street [TS]

00:58:08   yeah these huge budgets were not spend [TS]

00:58:10   on extras now I which is technically got [TS]

00:58:13   it all yeah i mean when we jump ahead to [TS]

00:58:15   Batman Returns there's not that many [TS]

00:58:16   people at that tree lighting so well you [TS]

00:58:18   know what every year so not watch it at [TS]

00:58:21   home from on television television yeah [TS]

00:58:23   there's more prints in the in the parade [TS]

00:58:26   those who get we get a little bit like [TS]

00:58:28   that and i actually was reminded in the [TS]

00:58:30   first sam raimi spider-man movie they [TS]

00:58:33   have the hooray for everything festival [TS]

00:58:34   where the green goblin attacks people [TS]

00:58:36   and there's balloons and stuff and this [TS]

00:58:38   is it's very much the same scene as this [TS]

00:58:41   except of course that actually is like [TS]

00:58:43   in Times Square and has lots of people [TS]

00:58:46   you know computer-generated people but [TS]

00:58:48   lots of people and i was i was reminded [TS]

00:58:50   of that while watching this [TS]

00:58:52   this is the the low budget version where [TS]

00:58:53   they have one block and you know 20 [TS]

00:58:56   extra I wondered how much they spent on [TS]

00:58:59   the sequence where Batman is angry and [TS]

00:59:01   he drives his car to the chemical plant [TS]

00:59:03   blows everything up because i thought [TS]

00:59:05   yeah that seems expensive and didn't [TS]

00:59:06   have much [TS]

00:59:08   yeah just rolls rolls the Batmobile and [TS]

00:59:09   drop some bombs blows up access [TS]

00:59:11   chemicals and and drives off like yay [TS]

00:59:14   take that chemical plants the movie did [TS]

00:59:16   not have enough explosions so think it's [TS]

00:59:18   a good thing nobody was in there [TS]

00:59:20   yep so robert wall makes this triumphant [TS]

00:59:23   reappearance here Monty you're going to [TS]

00:59:26   roberts he's totally doing what of [TS]

00:59:28   reporter at an event would do which is [TS]

00:59:30   he tells the photographer take pictures [TS]

00:59:34   that expect funny good good tip take for [TS]

00:59:38   pictures and then he writes a headline [TS]

00:59:40   out loud as he's taking pictures [TS]

00:59:41   Gotham's greed this is not how [TS]

00:59:43   journalism works this is not water [TS]

00:59:45   reporter does but at least robert [TS]

00:59:46   wallace back he knows the idea of [TS]

00:59:48   journalism there's been quite a little [TS]

00:59:51   earlier where he yells copy and times [TS]

00:59:54   completely unprepared for the kid right [TS]

00:59:56   next to say yes sir [TS]

00:59:58   don't have any copy for that it [TS]

00:59:58   don't have any copy for that it [TS]

01:00:00   if you haven't written a word liar [TS]

01:00:02   anyway there's a bit there's a bad plane [TS]

01:00:04   yeah Jason Jason that nice movie you got [TS]

01:00:06   here I like the Batmobile but we need to [TS]

01:00:08   sell to toys [TS]

01:00:10   how can you help me out what if what if [TS]

01:00:12   we have a bad plane that looks like the [TS]

01:00:14   Batman logo and he flies in front of the [TS]

01:00:15   Moon thereby creating a batman logo [TS]

01:00:18   okay that sounds great however i've only [TS]

01:00:20   got about eight bucks for the budget so [TS]

01:00:22   you can never have that appear next to [TS]

01:00:24   any actual actors because we're going to [TS]

01:00:26   make maybe like have you make a model of [TS]

01:00:27   it is that ok what we're going to do is [TS]

01:00:29   we're going to make a bad plane model [TS]

01:00:30   that's going to fly around and then [TS]

01:00:32   we're going to have a thing that we put [TS]

01:00:33   on like a golf cart that we dragged [TS]

01:00:35   along r1 street and and and what we'll [TS]

01:00:38   have is the bad plane will just get shot [TS]

01:00:40   by a gun and and crash and again another [TS]

01:00:43   young about apparently the original [TS]

01:00:45   script called for the choker to have a [TS]

01:00:46   tank to shoot the bad play down and then [TS]

01:00:48   for budgetary reasons his tank is [TS]

01:00:50   replaced with a gun home a gun while [TS]

01:00:53   somewhere in here is the scene that is [TS]

01:00:55   most tim burton e in the movie to me [TS]

01:00:57   which is when the plane grabs all the [TS]

01:01:00   balloons and flies away [TS]

01:01:02   oh yeah those balloons I'm positive are [TS]

01:01:06   based on the same sketches that led to [TS]

01:01:08   nightmare before christmas know those [TS]

01:01:11   blues are the same toys that are under [TS]

01:01:13   trees because those more than anything [TS]

01:01:17   else the movie say hi I'm Tim Burton I [TS]

01:01:20   like stuff that looks like this [TS]

01:01:21   yeah I do like that scene where Batman's [TS]

01:01:23   got his like a little claw or whatever [TS]

01:01:25   on the bad plane that can grab the [TS]

01:01:27   balloons and and it leads to the the [TS]

01:01:29   Joker getting very upset he took my [TS]

01:01:31   balloons [TS]

01:01:32   I love that he had that yeah that the [TS]

01:01:35   parts that part's good a poor Bob I like [TS]

01:01:38   the idea that the balloons themselves [TS]

01:01:40   are full of poison gas and will be [TS]

01:01:42   released on the unsuspecting public [TS]

01:01:44   that's kind of fun you can think about [TS]

01:01:46   that when you're watching the [TS]

01:01:47   thanksgiving parade next year that's i [TS]

01:01:50   mean that's like that classic Joker [TS]

01:01:51   style plot right i mean i'm down yeah oh [TS]

01:01:54   yeah oh yeah why is it that they get [TS]

01:01:56   bigger as the gas is released [TS]

01:01:59   I'm just confused about that point it's [TS]

01:02:01   physics everything with distance in that [TS]

01:02:03   entire sequence does not make any sense [TS]

01:02:05   like the size of the balloons or [TS]

01:02:06   whatever size they need to be the [TS]

01:02:08   proximity of the balloons to the Joker [TS]

01:02:10   is whatever they need to be it [TS]

01:02:12   yeah it's don't worry about it [TS]

01:02:14   everything's great that point though we [TS]

01:02:15   get action hero robert wall because he [TS]

01:02:18   master himself except a baseball bat [TS]

01:02:21   what is he doing you're not the hero of [TS]

01:02:24   this movie sir you don't know that they [TS]

01:02:26   could rename it later call it knocks man [TS]

01:02:28   yeah this thing is hard time cap it's [TS]

01:02:31   the journalists in the bad man that'll [TS]

01:02:33   be wanted to go you know he could just [TS]

01:02:35   as easily be in the suit to do we really [TS]

01:02:39   know this the scene ends with the climax [TS]

01:02:42   where they all run up into a tower and [TS]

01:02:43   fight because there's always a towering [TS]

01:02:46   it all follows yeah you're right exactly [TS]

01:02:47   right hand there's got to be a tower and [TS]

01:02:49   here it is a giant Bell falls down an [TS]

01:02:52   oxide stairs so that no one can chase [TS]

01:02:54   them up except also conveniently at the [TS]

01:02:56   top of the tower there's like ten Joker [TS]

01:02:58   goons that doesn't make any sense [TS]

01:02:59   uh-huh yeah I don't know when those guys [TS]

01:03:01   came from don't worry about it [TS]

01:03:03   they're there and again it's it's a [TS]

01:03:04   variety of goods yeah they're judging [TS]

01:03:07   goons and there's ninja goon yeah this [TS]

01:03:09   is you know cartwheeling goon yeah mhm [TS]

01:03:12   diversification yeah yeah you got a [TS]

01:03:14   different kinds of guns and that allows [TS]

01:03:15   the Joker to dance and make jokes while [TS]

01:03:18   Batman has to fight various goons well [TS]

01:03:21   yeah this is this is not one of my [TS]

01:03:24   favorite parts of the movie sounds like [TS]

01:03:25   the perfunctory we have to have a boss [TS]

01:03:27   fight at the end of the movie thing [TS]

01:03:30   yeah and that's what it you know knowing [TS]

01:03:32   that now it kind of shows through in the [TS]

01:03:35   direction [TS]

01:03:35   yeah because tim burton didn't want to [TS]

01:03:37   do that now for the ending that there's [TS]

01:03:39   a problem you always have with batman [TS]

01:03:41   vs. the Joker which is Batman is strong [TS]

01:03:44   in the Joker isn't yeah so if that man [TS]

01:03:48   punches Joker even once that's kind of [TS]

01:03:51   the end of the game [TS]

01:03:52   yeah once you get to the Joker you [TS]

01:03:54   that's the one [TS]

01:03:55   once you can get get to him yeah well [TS]

01:03:57   and we'll see this again in batman [TS]

01:03:58   returns but in the comics you know [TS]

01:04:00   Joker's got this wiry insane strength [TS]

01:04:02   and Batman happens did not be wearing [TS]

01:04:04   armor so it's a bit of a fairer fine [TS]

01:04:08   and yet we have just completely missed [TS]

01:04:11   actually the the issue that of Batman [TS]

01:04:17   secret origin which they're about to [TS]

01:04:20   have out here on top of this bill I I so [TS]

01:04:22   yeah they we get the dance with the [TS]

01:04:24   devil in the pale moon [TS]

01:04:25   like all that and it's revealed that [TS]

01:04:27   like i said earlier that the Joker uh we [TS]

01:04:30   went jet when he was young jack napier [TS]

01:04:32   he was the one who shot Bruce Wayne's [TS]

01:04:34   parents and there's that moment of like [TS]

01:04:36   you you know you created me and you [TS]

01:04:39   created me uh and even the Joker the [TS]

01:04:42   Joker makes fun of that immediately [TS]

01:04:44   oh sure you got to say that I say you [TS]

01:04:46   are you crazy you got to say I created [TS]

01:04:48   you like he doesn't even listen to him [TS]

01:04:50   so how do people feel about this in the [TS]

01:04:52   context of the movie i don't i don't [TS]

01:04:53   like it in the context of Batman but [TS]

01:04:55   maybe it works I don't mind it here it [TS]

01:04:57   as a single movie find their dark [TS]

01:05:00   mirrors of each other that gives him a [TS]

01:05:03   little extra but that's fine i don't [TS]

01:05:05   mind did the writers trying to add some [TS]

01:05:07   depth in here somewhere [TS]

01:05:08   well that was Burton's idea ok i like [TS]

01:05:12   the idea that we get Batman's origin in [TS]

01:05:14   passing and to make it yet to make it [TS]

01:05:17   relevant in some way I think you could [TS]

01:05:18   have probably made it relevant where he [TS]

01:05:20   was killed by somebody like jack napier [TS]

01:05:23   and not have it literally be him and [TS]

01:05:25   still have a connection there because [TS]

01:05:27   that's an awful lot of coincidence but [TS]

01:05:29   it's fine and you know and that's [TS]

01:05:30   sometimes that this is handled in [TS]

01:05:31   different ways [TS]

01:05:32   I mean I used the person who is usually [TS]

01:05:34   identified its the killer is this [TS]

01:05:36   character called Joe Chill and even that [TS]

01:05:38   some people did not like because they [TS]

01:05:40   like the idea of more that like the you [TS]

01:05:42   know that we will he will never know [TS]

01:05:44   right and that he and right he will go [TS]

01:05:46   out every night and fight crime and [TS]

01:05:47   never happened he's never going to be [TS]

01:05:49   able to 100% Avengers parents because as [TS]

01:05:53   some faceless hood is the person and you [TS]

01:05:55   know he has to fight all crime to to [TS]

01:05:57   confront that as opposed to like nope [TS]

01:05:59   it's a guy he's got a name and a face [TS]

01:06:01   and maybe I can get him even some days [TS]

01:06:03   and they're terribly there's at least [TS]

01:06:04   one story where that happens so to then [TS]

01:06:07   make it even be the joker [TS]

01:06:09   huh yeah not a fan yeah that's that's [TS]

01:06:12   the point actually that glint and here's [TS]

01:06:15   where i cite the previous source of Glen [TS]

01:06:17   Weldon from pop culture happy are wrote [TS]

01:06:19   a really really good book i really love [TS]

01:06:21   it [TS]

01:06:22   the caped crusade and his argument is [TS]

01:06:25   that by doing this by making the Joker [TS]

01:06:29   the guy who killed Batman's parents [TS]

01:06:31   you've turned this from a hero story [TS]

01:06:34   into a revenge entry fee and and [TS]

01:06:38   as far as Batman goes I don't like it [TS]

01:06:41   but as far as a self-contained movie [TS]

01:06:44   where spoiler alert the Joker dies at [TS]

01:06:47   the end [TS]

01:06:47   yeah it kind of makes sense to sort of [TS]

01:06:50   wrap it all up in the one store [TS]

01:06:52   ok I'll by-the-sea see my my headcanon [TS]

01:06:55   is that was that mean it probably still [TS]

01:07:00   is that it's not really the Joker or [TS]

01:07:05   jack napier or whoever you want to call [TS]

01:07:07   them at that point it's that that's what [TS]

01:07:09   Batman is imagining now and that every [TS]

01:07:12   night he goes out he sees someone [TS]

01:07:15   different doing it and that's part of [TS]

01:07:17   his part of his little quirk about that [TS]

01:07:20   is psychosis about that so you know to [TS]

01:07:24   me it doesn't have to be the Joker in [TS]

01:07:27   this but it makes sense that he would [TS]

01:07:28   picture him this time so that I think [TS]

01:07:32   this is basically the end of the movie [TS]

01:07:33   they they they fight they go for one [TS]

01:07:35   last press conference [TS]

01:07:36   yes that's right there's a cliffhanger [TS]

01:07:38   and then they reverse and then the Joker [TS]

01:07:41   drops and dies and and there's a press [TS]

01:07:45   conference and Commissioner Gordon [TS]

01:07:47   explains that they've been given a bat [TS]

01:07:49   signal and we pan of intensity CA [TS]

01:07:51   vigilantes and AH gave us the signal we [TS]

01:07:56   needed one because we didn't have any [TS]

01:07:58   spotlights so nobody turn it on though [TS]

01:08:00   because that is going to rich [TS]

01:08:03   yeah you could be and that's that's a [TS]

01:08:06   that's Batman I i was i saw this movie a [TS]

01:08:12   lot in the I guess early nineties and I [TS]

01:08:15   was a little worried to revisit it [TS]

01:08:17   because i haven't revisited in quite a [TS]

01:08:19   while and you know I i enjoyed watching [TS]

01:08:23   it it's got lots of issues but I i like [TS]

01:08:26   the the the way it looks and I like [TS]

01:08:29   Michael Keaton and I like Jack [TS]

01:08:31   Nicholson's totally wild performance and [TS]

01:08:34   I you know I I i enjoyed watching it [TS]

01:08:37   even though it's definitely of you know [TS]

01:08:40   of its time [TS]

01:08:41   what did everybody else think about this [TS]

01:08:42   one I continue to enjoy it [TS]

01:08:44   yeah not only as much as I did the first [TS]

01:08:46   time I saw it we've had a lot more [TS]

01:08:47   superhero movie since then right i mean [TS]

01:08:49   that's part [TS]

01:08:50   that is is that this was the novelty of [TS]

01:08:52   a movie like a big-budget movie with [TS]

01:08:55   real actors about Batman it was kind of [TS]

01:08:58   a big I mean not just the marketing part [TS]

01:09:00   was a big deal to have this much talent [TS]

01:09:04   make and money assembled to make a [TS]

01:09:07   superhero movie and now of course we get [TS]

01:09:09   to eight or ten days a year but [TS]

01:09:12   comparing it to modern superhero movies [TS]

01:09:14   everyone now wants everybody to make [TS]

01:09:16   sense they try like especially DC movies [TS]

01:09:19   we try to have motivations for all the [TS]

01:09:21   characters but a madman like tim burton [TS]

01:09:25   is willing to say all right jack [TS]

01:09:27   nicholson remember Cesar Romero double [TS]

01:09:31   it go [TS]

01:09:32   yeah that's when my brother made me [TS]

01:09:36   watch batman begins and we're talking [TS]

01:09:39   about you haven't seen Batman Begins yet [TS]

01:09:42   oh my god you have to see Batman Begins [TS]

01:09:44   i'm watching batman begins and I've got [TS]

01:09:47   this movie competing with it in the back [TS]

01:09:50   of my head and I wound up at all [TS]

01:09:53   I almost I want up disliking batman [TS]

01:09:56   begins because it was too much of an [TS]

01:09:58   effort to make Batman realistic and yes [TS]

01:10:03   and when you when you when you get to [TS]

01:10:06   the point where Bruce Wayne puts on bat [TS]

01:10:08   ears [TS]

01:10:09   it's got to be a whole lot weirder [TS]

01:10:11   otherwise i'm sitting here going why is [TS]

01:10:13   he putting on bad ears if i love this i [TS]

01:10:16   love the 1989 batman because it is just [TS]

01:10:21   weird enough to make me forgive a whole [TS]

01:10:24   lot of stuff that doesn't make sense i [TS]

01:10:26   think mostly holds up as you said you [TS]

01:10:29   know taking into account that yes it [TS]

01:10:31   this is tim burton and and tim burton [TS]

01:10:33   has a unique vision but um it holds up [TS]

01:10:37   for be overall i have quibbles aplenty [TS]

01:10:39   here and there but i can still sit down [TS]

01:10:44   and watch it again and enjoy most of it [TS]

01:10:46   again [TS]

01:10:46   yeah I enjoyed as a fusion of a little [TS]

01:10:50   bit of the Adam West style a little bit [TS]

01:10:52   of Gary Miller a little bit of Danny [TS]

01:10:54   O'Neil you know a little bit of neal [TS]

01:10:57   adams i love that it [TS]

01:11:00   spawned it sort of gave us the animated [TS]

01:11:02   series which is my favorite Batman of [TS]

01:11:05   all and and for me I mean Batman Begins [TS]

01:11:09   i really liked it when I saw it in the [TS]

01:11:11   theater and then you know I i didn't [TS]

01:11:14   watch it for a while and then the Dark [TS]

01:11:16   Knight came out I well I should rewatch [TS]

01:11:18   batman begins and I didn't like it as [TS]

01:11:20   much and i still have not gotten all the [TS]

01:11:23   way through dark knight rises because it [TS]

01:11:25   is just so oppressively wrong and you [TS]

01:11:30   know and so in retrospect I like the [TS]

01:11:32   Nolan movies less and less as they went [TS]

01:11:34   on and I still really enjoy this [TS]

01:11:36   I don't need the plot to make total [TS]

01:11:38   sense I just think that's good [TS]

01:11:40   well i'm watching yeah that's not going [TS]

01:11:42   to mean it's more like comic book [TS]

01:11:44   actually it is that it is very [TS]

01:11:45   straightforward in a way that so many of [TS]

01:11:47   these movies that have multiple villains [TS]

01:11:48   aren't like look the Joker is bad and [TS]

01:11:50   he's crazy and he wants to cause cause [TS]

01:11:53   trouble for Batman and he is interested [TS]

01:11:56   in Vicki Vale and making him is this [TS]

01:11:58   next art project and he wants to kill [TS]

01:12:01   people in Gotham City like I mean that [TS]

01:12:03   he doesn't have a grand said [TS]

01:12:06   imaginations that are going to lead to [TS]

01:12:08   an outcome hehe is just a comic book [TS]

01:12:11   villain who's trying to do bad stuff and [TS]

01:12:14   Batman stops him that's I you know it's [TS]

01:12:16   refreshing in that way that that's kind [TS]

01:12:18   of all there is to this movie it's dead [TS]

01:12:20   that's it it's like there's Batman [TS]

01:12:21   there's the Joker they interact and did [TS]

01:12:24   the Joker plunges off of a building in [TS]

01:12:26   his dead and that's it [TS]

01:12:27   Tony your verdict on Batman I it's fine [TS]

01:12:31   it's mine [TS]

01:12:34   the people who made this should not be [TS]

01:12:36   hunted down and killed for sport [TS]

01:12:38   oh no this this is for its future it's [TS]

01:12:41   so many bad memories current anyone I i [TS]

01:12:44   like the version of The Joker I I think [TS]

01:12:47   I'm less impressed with this version of [TS]

01:12:49   Batman than than the rest of you to me [TS]

01:12:52   he's a little blah the action sequences [TS]

01:12:54   have not aged particularly well but [TS]

01:12:56   maybe they were more exciting at the [TS]

01:12:58   time [TS]

01:12:58   no I do like weirdo Bruce Wayne I had [TS]

01:13:02   not remember that and that was that was [TS]

01:13:03   kind of a treat to discover that but I'd [TS]

01:13:07   I feel like I mean and this is this is [TS]

01:13:09   not necessarily a problem with this [TS]

01:13:10   movie so much as a lot of Batman and [TS]

01:13:12   general is sometimes Batman is not very [TS]

01:13:15   exciting and it's his villains that are [TS]

01:13:16   the interesting fun and I get the sense [TS]

01:13:19   that maybe tim burton does not care that [TS]

01:13:21   much about Batman and that this movie is [TS]

01:13:24   kind of only a lot more about the Joker [TS]

01:13:26   and this whole will talk about Batman [TS]

01:13:28   Returns shortly but Batman it can be [TS]

01:13:32   boring and I think he's especially [TS]

01:13:33   boring when he's just kinda by himself [TS]

01:13:35   and that's why I think a lot of stories [TS]

01:13:38   he gets paired with other people and [TS]

01:13:39   that that's gonna be fun whether that's [TS]

01:13:41   Robin or Commissioner Gordon and we get [TS]

01:13:44   a little bit of that here with with [TS]

01:13:46   vicki vale but not a lot and so Batman I [TS]

01:13:49   in this particular film comes across as [TS]

01:13:51   kind of boring a lot and I think that's [TS]

01:13:53   a little unfortunate when Commissioner [TS]

01:13:54   Gordon is a nonentity in this to which [TS]

01:13:56   is too bad [TS]

01:13:57   yeah i mean he's there but I want to [TS]

01:13:59   springboard off something Tony said [TS]

01:14:01   because dangerous coming out of this [TS]

01:14:03   movie [TS]

01:14:04   absolutely everyone talked about how [TS]

01:14:08   much fun jack nicholson was and nobody [TS]

01:14:10   talked about Michael Keaton and everyone [TS]

01:14:13   said oh I get it [TS]

01:14:14   the villains are the interesting part of [TS]

01:14:16   the villains add the color and the [TS]

01:14:17   excitement to the story and I think that [TS]

01:14:20   led directly to what happens in batman [TS]

01:14:23   returns [TS]

01:14:23   mmm yeah I think you're right yeah yeah [TS]

01:14:26   I mean Keaton is easily my favorite [TS]

01:14:28   thing in the movie and like I said he's [TS]

01:14:30   still my favorite movie Batman so Batman [TS]

01:14:33   Returns then happened and i'm pretty [TS]

01:14:38   sure i'm going to tell you how i feel [TS]

01:14:40   about batman returns so that was that [TS]

01:14:42   was nineteen ninety two three years [TS]

01:14:43   later [TS]

01:14:44   so I've got a theory about batman [TS]

01:14:45   returns I will I will give you my full [TS]

01:14:47   disclosure upfront i saw batman returns [TS]

01:14:49   in the theater in 1992 and I hated it [TS]

01:14:51   and i have not seen it since and i [TS]

01:14:54   watched it for this podcast and let me [TS]

01:14:55   tell ya [TS]

01:14:56   ah twenty-one-year-old me has excellent [TS]

01:15:01   taste in detecting haha because batman [TS]

01:15:06   returns is a piece of crap and i will i [TS]

01:15:09   will argue with those who think [TS]

01:15:10   otherwise but here's here's my theory [TS]

01:15:12   because i think it's i think it's [TS]

01:15:14   garbage i think it is I think it is so [TS]

01:15:15   terrible and and seeing it again [TS]

01:15:18   yeah it's so terrible but here's the [TS]

01:15:20   here's the reason why one tim burton i'm [TS]

01:15:22   not a tim burton fan [TS]

01:15:24   Batman is a movie that is compromised by [TS]

01:15:27   all of the studio oversight the producer [TS]

01:15:30   oversight the marketing message all of [TS]

01:15:32   that Tim Burton has said he doesn't like [TS]

01:15:35   Batman the movie he doesn't like it he's [TS]

01:15:37   not he thinks it's boring [TS]

01:15:38   I think Batman is not a movie the timber [TS]

01:15:41   and really wanted to make or like to [TS]

01:15:43   make and he didn't get to make the movie [TS]

01:15:44   he wanted and investment returns after [TS]

01:15:46   Batman with such a financial success [TS]

01:15:48   they let tim burton make whatever he [TS]

01:15:50   wanted and the result is a terrible [TS]

01:15:52   movie because the only reason Batman is [TS]

01:15:54   watchable is because they didn't let tim [TS]

01:15:56   burton be Tim Burton because tim burton [TS]

01:15:58   being tim burton is the recipe for a bad [TS]

01:16:00   movie not a bad movie but not a good [TS]

01:16:02   comic book movie i chatted with Glenn [TS]

01:16:04   weldon at a book release party and i [TS]

01:16:07   told him that i was a guy i really loved [TS]

01:16:10   the book although I thought he was too [TS]

01:16:11   unkind to the tim burton movies and he [TS]

01:16:15   said that is an opinion that some people [TS]

01:16:17   have and so but after the first is so I [TS]

01:16:22   was thinking about batman returns as I [TS]

01:16:24   remembered it [TS]

01:16:25   I watched it for the first time just [TS]

01:16:28   before we started recording and I Oh [TS]

01:16:31   Glenn weldon an apology [TS]

01:16:33   so as you know this movie is not good [TS]

01:16:36   my problem is i wanted i want to defend [TS]

01:16:39   tim burton I don't want to defend this [TS]

01:16:41   movie which is garbage [TS]

01:16:43   well I'll put it out put it this way [TS]

01:16:44   Monty I can see how reasonable people [TS]

01:16:46   would like some of Tim Burton's movies I [TS]

01:16:48   don't they don't work for me and I [TS]

01:16:50   either i think we're talking in our [TS]

01:16:51   slack earlier about how i feel about tim [TS]

01:16:53   burton movies like how some people feel [TS]

01:16:55   about wes anderson movies which is they [TS]

01:16:57   feel all exactly the same to me [TS]

01:16:59   whatever the sensibility is that he's [TS]

01:17:00   trying to get across it obviously really [TS]

01:17:02   works for him and people who like his [TS]

01:17:04   movies and it doesn't work for me like I [TS]

01:17:05   just it's all just noise to me I i find [TS]

01:17:08   it all unpleasant in with some [TS]

01:17:11   exceptions like dead wood made pee-wee's [TS]

01:17:13   big adventure is a good example right [TS]

01:17:14   but a lot of the movies he makes I don't [TS]

01:17:16   really love that man returns though I [TS]

01:17:17   feel like is is everything I don't like [TS]

01:17:20   about a Tim Burton movie like multiplied [TS]

01:17:23   and it concentrated well let me put it [TS]

01:17:26   this way i am tuned into tim burton to [TS]

01:17:28   the point where I kind of enjoyed the [TS]

01:17:30   Dark Shadows movie it was not as [TS]

01:17:32   annoying as I thought it was going to be [TS]

01:17:34   Batman Returns I can't stand [TS]

01:17:37   I think there's it i don't think he gets [TS]

01:17:40   any of the quirkiness and it's just the [TS]

01:17:43   surface level stuff [TS]

01:17:44   oh no it's all I've got it's too much [TS]

01:17:46   pork if I want to list a couple more my [TS]

01:17:48   theories here which is which is I do [TS]

01:17:50   think that this is one of those movies [TS]

01:17:52   that really lets us down the path of hey [TS]

01:17:54   what if we had more villains in [TS]

01:17:56   superhero movies it's a terrible idea i [TS]

01:17:58   don't know if it's ever been done well [TS]

01:17:59   where they've added like multiple [TS]

01:18:01   supervillains in a superhero movie and [TS]

01:18:04   had it work out to improve the movie and [TS]

01:18:07   I don't think it does it here either so [TS]

01:18:09   I think that's part of the problem and I [TS]

01:18:10   think fundamentally and this came up [TS]

01:18:11   earlier Tim Burton totally doesn't think [TS]

01:18:14   Batman is interesting and for the [TS]

01:18:16   largest part of Batman Returns Batman is [TS]

01:18:19   not even around it is really the story [TS]

01:18:21   of the penguin and catwoman and Batman [TS]

01:18:24   is like the doofus who shows up and hugs [TS]

01:18:27   them sometimes I'll got that was one of [TS]

01:18:30   the things that drove me nuts this time [TS]

01:18:33   I remember watching this I don't think I [TS]

01:18:35   saw it in the theater but i think i saw [TS]

01:18:37   it on a cable channel or on a on VHS [TS]

01:18:41   afterwards at some point and it [TS]

01:18:44   irritated me at the time thinking like [TS]

01:18:46   you know they really could have done [TS]

01:18:49   better a better job with Catwoman [TS]

01:18:51   this was before I really knew Selina [TS]

01:18:54   Kyle's Catwoman's origins in in the [TS]

01:18:57   comics I hadn't seen the animated series [TS]

01:18:58   yet and this origin story [TS]

01:19:02   neither of these origin stories make any [TS]

01:19:05   he says it's she falls all falls out of [TS]

01:19:07   a window and and fall to her death [TS]

01:19:10   except she's hit a few awnings on the [TS]

01:19:12   way down but then cats swarm her and [TS]

01:19:15   Jason she stays on you I to explain to [TS]

01:19:17   you how magic works i I'm just saying I [TS]

01:19:20   wasn't aware that that that is looking [TS]

01:19:22   after strange movie that woman is like a [TS]

01:19:24   Cat spirit totem person or something but [TS]

01:19:28   that's what this movie once but also [TS]

01:19:30   that penguins raised a baby [TS]

01:19:32   yeah well there to be fair to be fair I [TS]

01:19:37   think there's the implication that he [TS]

01:19:38   was also raised by the circus and just [TS]

01:19:39   wasn't mentioned all right okay for [TS]

01:19:40   being our reason that Maxie there who [TS]

01:19:42   will speak for the circus i will speak [TS]

01:19:44   specifically its ok awning had a picture [TS]

01:19:46   of it out on it i did and they were just [TS]

01:19:48   talking about the heads before she felt [TS]

01:19:51   she got possessed by an awning spirit is [TS]

01:19:53   that what you're telling me she know [TS]

01:19:55   that would have been on any woman but [TS]

01:19:56   what happens if if you say I'm not a cat [TS]

01:19:59   and then you fall through an awning with [TS]

01:20:02   a picture of a cat and then cats come [TS]

01:20:03   around you you are forced to start [TS]

01:20:06   talking all sorts of cat medical person [TS]

01:20:09   for the whole one point try to wash [TS]

01:20:11   yourself by licking your hand what the [TS]

01:20:13   animal animal theme right i mean that's [TS]

01:20:15   it is penguin and catwoman so we're [TS]

01:20:17   going to have lots of animals and and at [TS]

01:20:19   one point there's like I'm not a human [TS]

01:20:21   being I'm an animal is something that so [TS]

01:20:23   Danny DeVito is the penguin and machine [TS]

01:20:26   uh-oh who is it [TS]

01:20:28   now i'm going to show you shall find her [TS]

01:20:31   she'll fight for his cat lineart is [TS]

01:20:32   selina kyle Christopher Walken is Max [TS]

01:20:36   Schreck named after the star of nice [TS]

01:20:39   verado he dresses like Scrooge in A [TS]

01:20:41   Christmas Carol which is just how about [TS]

01:20:44   that makeup i like when they introduce [TS]

01:20:45   him he said he's in a meeting [TS]

01:20:47   so you know he's probably not so great [TS]

01:20:48   and he's wearing gloves inside so you [TS]

01:20:50   know he's really evil [TS]

01:20:52   yeah he's also very clearly modeled [TS]

01:20:55   after Donald Trump I'm not kidding he's [TS]

01:20:57   very clearly modeled on absolutely [TS]

01:20:59   practically his last line is you're [TS]

01:21:01   fired [TS]

01:21:02   this movie was actually a little [TS]

01:21:03   uncomfortable to watch after the [TS]

01:21:05   election now tell you living in the new [TS]

01:21:07   york area at the time that with [TS]

01:21:08   everybody was like wow he's like goth [TS]

01:21:11   Donald Trump whoa [TS]

01:21:13   he was the only good thing in the movie [TS]

01:21:15   well i was gonna say the for me the only [TS]

01:21:17   three good things in the movie [TS]

01:21:19   christopher walken yes the fact that [TS]

01:21:22   Michael Keaton finally gets top billing [TS]

01:21:24   an event info k you know yeah but he had [TS]

01:21:28   a fourth most lines pay now and in the [TS]

01:21:31   fact that the words to the music in this [TS]

01:21:33   were really easy to memorize I like the [TS]

01:21:35   I like the part where all the Penguins [TS]

01:21:37   are come on the march i watch that twice [TS]

01:21:39   that was my hair part not be entirely [TS]

01:21:42   fire some some rockets [TS]

01:21:44   yeah rocket which the Penguins have the [TS]

01:21:46   Penguins have targeting radicals [TS]

01:21:48   dropping over their eyes they have [TS]

01:21:50   targeting monocles y to the Penguins [TS]

01:21:52   have remote control [TS]

01:21:53   sorry possibly carry his corpse to the [TS]

01:21:56   water at the end [TS]

01:21:59   yes they did make sure you did there's a [TS]

01:22:00   very nice sort of penguin ceremony they [TS]

01:22:04   have level [TS]

01:22:04   tating Majesty is this your first [TS]

01:22:06   penguin funeral yep there's yeah but [TS]

01:22:09   it's this this movie so so yeah the lab [TS]

01:22:12   since of Batman he just disappears for [TS]

01:22:15   for a large portion of the movie the [TS]

01:22:18   penguin stuff I found not interesting [TS]

01:22:20   Christopher Walken is he is the best [TS]

01:22:23   thing in the movie i like i like him [TS]

01:22:26   it's a bizarre performance but i really [TS]

01:22:28   enjoy it well it's one yeah yeah and I [TS]

01:22:31   think that's probably a problem that the [TS]

01:22:33   the that's orthogonal to the whole mood [TS]

01:22:35   right notion of Batman [TS]

01:22:37   yeah I want to follow him and see what [TS]

01:22:39   he's up we'll match trek to next and the [TS]

01:22:41   answer is he gets killed by the cat by [TS]

01:22:44   Catwoman at the end by I feel like that [TS]

01:22:46   yeah I thought about that he's like the [TS]

01:22:48   Robert will love this movie [TS]

01:22:50   if that's the s I've never heard driver [TS]

01:22:53   will always Christopher Walken compared [TS]

01:22:55   but there it is [TS]

01:22:57   yeah we want water for walk-ins are huh [TS]

01:23:00   I just just gonna say that generate that [TS]

01:23:03   just for teaching you do not want to [TS]

01:23:05   mess with that drives me nuts of the the [TS]

01:23:08   the way they had some of for me one of [TS]

01:23:12   the strengths in the movie was post [TS]

01:23:15   transformation Catwoman Pfeiffer you [TS]

01:23:18   know then that and it was really [TS]

01:23:20   entertaining that they even had to [TS]

01:23:22   transform her in the first place I mean [TS]

01:23:24   Selina Kyle in the comics is it a rich [TS]

01:23:28   lady who decides to you know start [TS]

01:23:30   stealing jewelry or whatever but no [TS]

01:23:32   they're going to have to transform [TS]

01:23:34   Michelle Pfeiffer tried to make her a [TS]

01:23:36   frump so that they can turn everything [TS]

01:23:38   very old glamour Woman out towards your [TS]

01:23:40   glasses corndog yes I and there were so [TS]

01:23:44   many good points [TS]

01:23:45   hidden inside the Catwoman story the the [TS]

01:23:48   idea of her trying to become her own [TS]

01:23:51   vigilante because at first she's you [TS]

01:23:53   know she your first thing she does is [TS]

01:23:55   rescue a woman although she's very upset [TS]

01:23:57   that the woman let herself get caught in [TS]

01:23:59   the first place and then she turns to [TS]

01:24:01   destruction of going after Schrag it [TS]

01:24:04   then it turns into this weird unresolved [TS]

01:24:07   sexual tension between her and between [TS]

01:24:10   Catwoman Batman that just comes out of [TS]

01:24:11   nowhere and makes no sense their moves [TS]

01:24:15   are so totally weird so weird [TS]

01:24:16   it emphasizes the other thing I [TS]

01:24:18   hate about this movie which is how dumb [TS]

01:24:20   Batman is for the first two-thirds of [TS]

01:24:22   the movie [TS]

01:24:22   yeah he's the world when he shows up [TS]

01:24:25   he's done the world's greatest detective [TS]

01:24:27   your detective skills i wrote down at [TS]

01:24:29   one point the world's greatest detective [TS]

01:24:31   with a bunch of question marks and then [TS]

01:24:33   like three lines down in my notes it [TS]

01:24:34   says oh now the world's greatest [TS]

01:24:36   detective is punching clowns that is [TS]

01:24:39   what that many other members interests I [TS]

01:24:41   will I will I will also check in with [TS]

01:24:43   with my wiser friends here about what it [TS]

01:24:46   was like when this movie came out I was [TS]

01:24:48   still a child and I recall it being [TS]

01:24:50   weird that this movie I was still like a [TS]

01:24:53   vehicle for shuffling action figures [TS]

01:24:55   that kids even though it was so much [TS]

01:24:58   more violent and had like the sexual [TS]

01:25:00   themes to it that the video even amalia [TS]

01:25:02   think people if it's that I don't you [TS]

01:25:04   want to do with that felt weird uh i [TS]

01:25:06   mean i remember seeing like like kids [TS]

01:25:09   dressed up as catwoman for halloween [TS]

01:25:11   like young children and be like this [TS]

01:25:13   analysis weird yeah this is not run [TS]

01:25:15   harley quinn me this this year lots of [TS]

01:25:18   people went to see it lots of people i [TS]

01:25:21   mean probably went back for second [TS]

01:25:23   feelings but when you've got Paul Bearer [TS]

01:25:26   penguins you don't know what to do with [TS]

01:25:28   Paul Bearer people i'm ok with that part [TS]

01:25:31   yeah no one knew what to do I have [TS]

01:25:33   benefit memories i don't know why i [TS]

01:25:34   remember this of Joan Rivers when she [TS]

01:25:37   had her TV show and she has this gossip [TS]

01:25:41   columnist or press you know somebody who [TS]

01:25:43   was on the celebrity circuit talking [TS]

01:25:45   about like one of the one of the [TS]

01:25:47   pre-release parties or something for for [TS]

01:25:49   the movie and she showing Joan Rivers [TS]

01:25:52   this paperweight that's designed so that [TS]

01:25:55   was one of the big things was it was [TS]

01:25:56   Christmastime it was snow snow [TS]

01:25:58   everywhere so there was this glass [TS]

01:25:59   paperweight with the Batman logo inside [TS]

01:26:01   it and if you tilted at the snow would [TS]

01:26:03   move across it and here's Joan Rivers [TS]

01:26:05   plain-looking with this thing playing [TS]

01:26:07   with it going what the hell is this [TS]

01:26:09   that that that felt like the general [TS]

01:26:12   reaction after once the movie was out [TS]

01:26:14   it's like what the hell is this the [TS]

01:26:16   buzzwords were there [TS]

01:26:17   penguin Catwoman Batman's back and while [TS]

01:26:20   that man back really well they didn't [TS]

01:26:22   bother with anything so yeah was [TS]

01:26:25   worthwhile i mean i remember at the time [TS]

01:26:28   thinking you know remembering back three [TS]

01:26:30   years to all the marketing push and [TS]

01:26:32   everybody saw the logo and everything [TS]

01:26:34   was bright and bold and fun and you know [TS]

01:26:37   just the logo itself was you know black [TS]

01:26:40   and gold and just just jumped out at you [TS]

01:26:43   and this did not have any of that it [TS]

01:26:46   didn't have a song you know again [TS]

01:26:47   whatever we think of the songs and all [TS]

01:26:49   it didn't have a song playing every hour [TS]

01:26:51   on mtv it didn't have anything bouncy [TS]

01:26:54   and fun to it [TS]

01:26:55   the only thing you ever saw was dark and [TS]

01:26:57   snow and ice and and their three phases [TS]

01:27:00   and they looked so c is also it it's an [TS]

01:27:02   xmas movie it's set at Christmastime and [TS]

01:27:05   it was released in june so perfect [TS]

01:27:08   timing that one of the one of the pieces [TS]

01:27:10   that was taken out of the first batman [TS]

01:27:14   movie was or heavily reduced was the [TS]

01:27:18   notion of the Batman and Joker being [TS]

01:27:21   parts different sides of the same coin [TS]

01:27:24   there's a head newspaper headline in an [TS]

01:27:27   early script that was taken out where [TS]

01:27:30   the headline is war of the freaks and [TS]

01:27:34   they seemed to rediscover that idea for [TS]

01:27:37   this movie because they put so much [TS]

01:27:39   effort into turning pink winning [TS]

01:27:42   Catwoman into freaks and also playing [TS]

01:27:46   with the idea of Batman as they feel [TS]

01:27:48   weak and tim burton seems to be so [TS]

01:27:51   fascinated with that he forgets to make [TS]

01:27:54   a superhero movie or just have Batman [TS]

01:27:57   he's not interested in Batman he Tim [TS]

01:27:59   Burton very clearly as bored by Batman [TS]

01:28:01   and so this is a movie about the about [TS]

01:28:03   Catwoman and penguin really and there's [TS]

01:28:06   a little bit of satire about him running [TS]

01:28:08   for for mayor and there's the L and [TS]

01:28:10   there's max Shreck trying to manipulate [TS]

01:28:12   things and all of that but but that man [TS]

01:28:15   doesn't get a lot of time Bruce Wayne [TS]

01:28:17   gets a little time sort of like in his [TS]

01:28:19   again there's this other thread which is [TS]

01:28:21   his attraction to Selina Kyle and [TS]

01:28:23   Batman's attraction to Catwoman and [TS]

01:28:25   that's that feels like something out of [TS]

01:28:27   the comics a little bit and when we get [TS]

01:28:29   to the very love that yeah yeah I I'll i [TS]

01:28:31   think that's I think that's one of my [TS]

01:28:33   grandma definitely strong parts that [TS]

01:28:35   yeah let these two really good actors [TS]

01:28:37   give them this really tangled issue let [TS]

01:28:40   them go [TS]

01:28:41   Michelle Pfeiffer after she after she [TS]

01:28:44   gets dumped out of the window and when [TS]

01:28:47   she's not in the cat suit is fascinating [TS]

01:28:51   yeah except in that scene where she's [TS]

01:28:53   sewing that the scene where she comes [TS]

01:28:54   back to her apartment and just yeah that [TS]

01:28:57   is and then shows her thing i hate that [TS]

01:28:59   seen a library then she pulls it [TS]

01:29:01   together [TS]

01:29:02   yeah that the reason I don't think this [TS]

01:29:04   was all tim burton's idea is he would [TS]

01:29:06   rather have the freaks be the heroes [TS]

01:29:09   instead of the villains sure like he [TS]

01:29:12   would rather do Edward Scissorhands then [TS]

01:29:14   have the guy who's yeah shunned by [TS]

01:29:17   society be actually ugly and horrible [TS]

01:29:20   like Danny DeVito I mean Danny DeVito's [TS]

01:29:22   Eric he's making to go with like well [TS]

01:29:25   what can I do with the Batman movie to [TS]

01:29:27   give it to get what I want it's like to [TS]

01:29:29   have these two have these characters [TS]

01:29:31   like this i'm a little surprised that [TS]

01:29:33   Catwoman ends up ends up killing max at [TS]

01:29:38   the end because it seems kind of [TS]

01:29:39   unnecessary she they they kiss over a [TS]

01:29:42   Taser to it's really stupid [TS]

01:29:43   oh yeah now he did kill her first true [TS]

01:29:46   but I think I feel like that would be an [TS]

01:29:47   interesting moment of like I issue [TS]

01:29:50   batteries she good [TS]

01:29:52   like maybe maybe maybe she's more [TS]

01:29:54   complicated than that because that [TS]

01:29:55   character is kind of like that she's a [TS]

01:29:57   little bit of both and then the penguin [TS]

01:29:58   this is more irredeemable but you know [TS]

01:30:01   that's again you know that they're in [TS]

01:30:04   the end it is about them just sort of [TS]

01:30:06   like having a moment on the stage and [TS]

01:30:07   then sort of a perfunctory I guess [TS]

01:30:10   Batman needs to clean this up at the end [TS]

01:30:11   because it's that kind of movie [TS]

01:30:13   yeah I do like that little clever bit at [TS]

01:30:15   the beginning of the movie before she [TS]

01:30:18   takes her tumble when she's who wins [TS]

01:30:21   Lena car was mugged and she's so mousing [TS]

01:30:23   all this other stuff and Batman saves [TS]

01:30:25   her and the Taser still lying there and [TS]

01:30:27   then she just get this glint in the eye [TS]

01:30:29   and she teases the unconscious thug and [TS]

01:30:33   that I do like that little bit because [TS]

01:30:35   that's that sort of suggest you that [TS]

01:30:37   yeah she is kind of broken inside and [TS]

01:30:40   got a lot of repressed anger and stuff [TS]

01:30:42   like that [TS]

01:30:42   well i think that the the Catwoman [TS]

01:30:44   thread for me that the Salina call [TS]

01:30:47   Catwoman thing for me feels like the [TS]

01:30:50   weather it's the script or whether it's [TS]

01:30:52   Burton I don't know but it feels like [TS]

01:30:54   this [TS]

01:30:55   first week shaky step towards women [TS]

01:30:57   having agency because you know she's one [TS]

01:31:01   of the reasons I think she's she's going [TS]

01:31:02   to kill Shrek at the end is because you [TS]

01:31:04   know this is a step she can take to [TS]

01:31:07   finally get her for revenge on him that [TS]

01:31:10   one line just killed me [TS]

01:31:13   um i would love to you know go live in [TS]

01:31:15   your castle and be your fairy princess i [TS]

01:31:17   would love that but i would hate myself [TS]

01:31:19   you know because she sees even that you [TS]

01:31:22   know is is giving in a way there's [TS]

01:31:25   there's a really good idea buried in [TS]

01:31:29   there that we only get glimpses I my [TS]

01:31:32   note says despite the dick jokes that [TS]

01:31:36   happened in this uh i think in providing [TS]

01:31:39   the brew Selena relationship is the best [TS]

01:31:41   thing in the movie like other the other [TS]

01:31:42   than other than yeah walkin doing [TS]

01:31:44   walking because that's weird and quirky [TS]

01:31:47   and it's like she's got a secret [TS]

01:31:49   identity he's got a secret identity [TS]

01:31:50   they're both really messed up they meet [TS]

01:31:53   when she walks into the office where [TS]

01:31:56   were walking is convinced that he he [TS]

01:31:58   killed her the night before and she just [TS]

01:32:00   walks in and he's like what's going on [TS]

01:32:02   and then that's also when Bruce Wayne is [TS]

01:32:04   there and they meet and so that's kind [TS]

01:32:05   of electric it all that is is pretty [TS]

01:32:07   cool because that's that's a weird I [TS]

01:32:10   mean I mean there's your Tim Burton [TS]

01:32:12   movie right it's like that freak Cesare [TS]

01:32:14   the heroes like Bruce and selina are [TS]

01:32:17   kind of freaks but they're also kind of [TS]

01:32:20   the leads and the heroes here and and it [TS]

01:32:23   that stuff kind of works and some of the [TS]

01:32:25   Batman Catwoman stuff works too but [TS]

01:32:27   that's you know again that then then a [TS]

01:32:31   monkey delivers a note of regret from [TS]

01:32:33   Batman removal i remember going into all [TS]

01:32:38   the press the only press I remember [TS]

01:32:40   about Batman Returns was talking about [TS]

01:32:43   Sean Young trying to become yeah right [TS]

01:32:45   oh they were worried about her like [TS]

01:32:48   sneaking onto the set at in the car in a [TS]

01:32:51   costume she made herself and sneaking [TS]

01:32:54   into Tim Burton's office she was [TS]

01:32:56   supposed to be the original Vicki Vale [TS]

01:32:58   and she got hurt and they had to recast [TS]

01:33:00   basing her so again apparently she [TS]

01:33:03   really really wanted to be in a movie [TS]

01:33:04   made me uncomfortable at the time [TS]

01:33:06   because they were really casting her as [TS]

01:33:07   crazy Shaw [TS]

01:33:08   Young who was so desperate for working [TS]

01:33:11   show up on talk shows and beg for it [TS]

01:33:13   yeah haha this movie has some [TS]

01:33:16   interesting things to try to say about [TS]

01:33:19   misogyny and yet it does it is almost [TS]

01:33:24   performs the misogyny more than it [TS]

01:33:26   comments on it man explains it or Batman [TS]

01:33:30   explains it [TS]

01:33:31   penguin is awful Max Schreck is awful [TS]

01:33:34   and Catwoman is sort of this perfect [TS]

01:33:39   victim kind of character and it's almost [TS]

01:33:42   like they it's up there with bits of [TS]

01:33:45   this in the first batman movie with Jack [TS]

01:33:48   Nicholson's character you know I didn't [TS]

01:33:50   you look good jack [TS]

01:33:51   I didn't ask and all this other stuff [TS]

01:33:54   but they amp it up in this movie as [TS]

01:33:57   though they're trying to make a point [TS]

01:33:58   about it i and III don't think they [TS]

01:34:02   succeed in Michael Keaton's last scene [TS]

01:34:05   about goodwill toward men and women just [TS]

01:34:08   doesn't google yeah i think that a last [TS]

01:34:12   person to do a pass on the screenplay [TS]

01:34:14   just put in a million stupid quips [TS]

01:34:17   yeah like towards the last half of the [TS]

01:34:19   movie it's full of things like I haven't [TS]

01:34:21   been fed all day eat floor do you have [TS]

01:34:25   fiber lot of dark yeah my kitty litter [TS]

01:34:29   and all my notes are so my heart I say [TS]

01:34:31   that the office I don't think he did the [TS]

01:34:33   final pass on it but the main credited [TS]

01:34:36   screenwriter had his previous film was [TS]

01:34:39   Hudson Hawk which is a much better [TS]

01:34:41   feeling much better film it's much [TS]

01:34:45   better than this will all it's so much [TS]

01:34:47   fun [TS]

01:34:48   one thing i want to mention about this [TS]

01:34:50   and then I I'm pretty much done with the [TS]

01:34:51   things for me to say about the movie [TS]

01:34:53   because I I don't like haha ok but Jason [TS]

01:34:57   you haven't even done the plot outline [TS]

01:34:58   yeah that's not gonna happen i fly i am [TS]

01:35:01   amused by the scene where do when the [TS]

01:35:05   penguin is trying to give a speech again [TS]

01:35:07   another press conference in Tony you [TS]

01:35:09   have your love hacked your hacked by [TS]

01:35:11   Batman and Alfred using a CD desi yeah [TS]

01:35:14   and that makes me laugh because they [TS]

01:35:16   they turn the tables on him in the end [TS]

01:35:18   he does a little bit of scratching there [TS]

01:35:20   and then later in the movie [TS]

01:35:21   Alfred is like a a freaker with [TS]

01:35:24   frequency jamming powers who turns the [TS]

01:35:28   Penguins around and like go Alfred and [TS]

01:35:31   it's ridiculous an awful and and doesn't [TS]

01:35:33   fit but it's also funny and the [TS]

01:35:35   culmination of that Batman shows up and [TS]

01:35:38   he's got his bat remote that controls [TS]

01:35:40   the Penguins and the penguin gets the [TS]

01:35:43   remote from him and then presses the [TS]

01:35:45   button [TS]

01:35:46   yeah which blows everything up and it's [TS]

01:35:48   like I don't I don't [TS]

01:35:49   yeah why is I think it was the things [TS]

01:35:52   listed it was it's like a homing thing [TS]

01:35:54   and that whoever presses the button it's [TS]

01:35:56   going to blow up that thing and then and [TS]

01:35:58   so Batman's just tricking the penguin [TS]

01:36:00   into taking jason your season tech [TS]

01:36:02   journalists is that how buttons work [TS]

01:36:05   yep that's how it works [TS]

01:36:09   it's a red button Tony red button that [TS]

01:36:11   means things explode if you push it come [TS]

01:36:12   on [TS]

01:36:13   ok thankyou standards the iso standard [TS]

01:36:16   for buttons i would like to briefly call [TS]

01:36:18   out three things in the movie that i [TS]

01:36:20   have a comment about if that's ok 1 i'd [TS]

01:36:24   like the way the video says no just give [TS]

01:36:27   you a splitting headache and the way [TS]

01:36:29   Christopher Walken sounds kind of like [TS]

01:36:31   he's apologizing when he says it's not [TS]

01:36:33   working think that was a weird scene [TS]

01:36:37   that I enjoyed a weird scene i did not [TS]

01:36:39   enjoy is when Catwoman is skipping rope [TS]

01:36:43   with her bullwhip which feels like [TS]

01:36:46   somebody thought that would look cool [TS]

01:36:47   and then it didn't and finally Batman [TS]

01:36:51   totally straps of dynamite with henchmen [TS]

01:36:53   and blow the money we don't we don't see [TS]

01:36:55   that he's fine [TS]

01:36:56   yeah I mean we talked about him not [TS]

01:36:58   killing people he kills he's he's fine [TS]

01:37:00   he's fine the best no circles artery [TS]

01:37:03   Tony you're in denial here Batman of [TS]

01:37:06   these two movies is a cold-blooded [TS]

01:37:09   murderer straight from detective comics [TS]

01:37:12   27 days you have to admit it he's bad [TS]

01:37:16   just you just band-aid over that he's [TS]

01:37:19   fine [TS]

01:37:21   I have an important equation solution I [TS]

01:37:24   have a very important question here [TS]

01:37:25   please [TS]

01:37:26   where the hell did the red triangle [TS]

01:37:29   circus gang get the plans for the [TS]

01:37:31   Batmobile yeah I'm just as a pretty big [TS]

01:37:33   claw they broke into [TS]

01:37:35   DMP let's say that pedia here here here [TS]

01:37:39   i can head candidate its weak and [TS]

01:37:41   pathetic there is the scene where they [TS]

01:37:43   go to the Department of record like this [TS]

01:37:45   movie yeah they go to the penguin spends [TS]

01:37:47   an extended period of time in the Gotham [TS]

01:37:49   Department of records which has a very [TS]

01:37:51   fancy sign for a Department of records [TS]

01:37:53   and probably Bruce Wayne is an [TS]

01:37:56   upstanding citizen and has put the files [TS]

01:37:58   for the blueprints of the Batmobile he [TS]

01:38:00   entered them into the public record as [TS]

01:38:02   you do when you're trying to maintain a [TS]

01:38:03   secret identity [TS]

01:38:04   uh-huh and my own area though yeah and [TS]

01:38:08   we've done [TS]

01:38:09   yeah tell me how do you think he got the [TS]

01:38:11   license plate for it straightly ya think [TS]

01:38:13   I felt a breeze how do people feel to me [TS]

01:38:15   the worst scene in this movie is when [TS]

01:38:17   the penguin goes up to his upstairs of [TS]

01:38:20   his campaign headquarters and him and [TS]

01:38:21   Catwoman are there and she oh god that [TS]

01:38:24   is that is the work for me the worst i [TS]

01:38:27   don't know if that is for you even even [TS]

01:38:29   not even counting the part which um [TS]

01:38:31   where she almost it's a bird [TS]

01:38:34   I am 46 years old and I am still too [TS]

01:38:36   young to see the penguin and catwoman on [TS]

01:38:39   that bad [TS]

01:38:39   I the dialogue and see what makes me [TS]

01:38:42   deeply uncomfortable and again this is [TS]

01:38:44   something that was used to sell action [TS]

01:38:45   figures two children [TS]

01:38:47   see I don't hurt likes grotesque protest [TS]

01:38:49   like beautiful grotesques Tony that is [TS]

01:38:52   that the scene that includes the line [TS]

01:38:53   that's just the pussy I was looking for [TS]

01:38:56   yes it was I thought so yeah that's not [TS]

01:38:59   a good scene or is there other scene [TS]

01:39:00   where he puts the moves on her and she [TS]

01:39:02   refuses and he tries to make her fly [TS]

01:39:04   into the sky on a honor like a parasol [TS]

01:39:06   helicopter thing also not a good scene [TS]

01:39:09   mmm nope nope nope i bet you there's [TS]

01:39:13   some other not a good see ya there are [TS]

01:39:15   you Jason Jason Jason I know your movies [TS]

01:39:18   almost done and you have a Batmobile and [TS]

01:39:20   I even saw you made a new version that [TS]

01:39:21   it splits into pieces that's great we'll [TS]

01:39:23   sell a new toy can get one more new toy [TS]

01:39:25   out of this movie so we can for the kids [TS]

01:39:27   and for my bank account how about a bad [TS]

01:39:29   boat just put it in had the batboat yeah [TS]

01:39:33   okay it's also know that the bats right [TS]

01:39:35   over here [TS]

01:39:36   all right I'm good ok alright that's up [TS]

01:39:39   about this penguin issue to shoot a [TS]

01:39:41   missile off of its back i had the action [TS]

01:39:44   figure of that as a kid I did too [TS]

01:39:47   well I wasn't the kid but I i had that [TS]

01:39:49   it came in a pack with two penguins one [TS]

01:39:50   of the Penguins is holding the [TS]

01:39:51   developers out in a way that I don't [TS]

01:39:53   know penguins really do the other [TS]

01:39:54   penguins just standing there they're not [TS]

01:39:56   really exited was just I like seeing [TS]

01:39:59   that 40 seconds of paul rubens that was [TS]

01:40:01   nice [TS]

01:40:01   yeah yeah the beginning of a penguin [TS]

01:40:04   penguin parents paul rubens is the [TS]

01:40:06   Penguins dad in the in that state is [TS]

01:40:09   born it's just like pee-wee's roving [TS]

01:40:11   seen yeah well they're both they're both [TS]

01:40:13   pee-wee's big adventure the mom and the [TS]

01:40:16   dad are both in pee-wee's big yeah [TS]

01:40:18   giantess a leader [TS]

01:40:19   yeah sorry hoe but the site a side note [TS]

01:40:22   I a pink one in the graveyard kneeling [TS]

01:40:27   before his parents grave bumping into [TS]

01:40:31   the wobbly styrofoam grave next-gen just [TS]

01:40:36   just sell you know Danny DeVito had to [TS]

01:40:38   deal with a lot of prosthetics with that [TS]

01:40:39   costume I was their number-one son and [TS]

01:40:42   they treated me like number two [TS]

01:40:43   zing somebody gotta pull your outline [TS]

01:40:45   that somebody got paid to write that [TS]

01:40:47   line I don't think they should have [TS]

01:40:48   brought up Vicki Vale in this no no [TS]

01:40:52   pretend she didn't exist that I won't be [TS]

01:40:54   sitting there going yeah what happened [TS]

01:40:55   to her instead it's really sad it's like [TS]

01:40:57   hey yeah remember that that we were [TS]

01:40:59   starting a good relationship there no [TS]

01:41:01   she couldn't take me being Batman [TS]

01:41:03   no really because I thought you talk [TS]

01:41:05   that through in the previous movie [TS]

01:41:07   yeah that that that made me kind of mad [TS]

01:41:09   but really it's low on my list of [TS]

01:41:12   grievances so haha sitting down watching [TS]

01:41:16   it tonight after not having seen it for [TS]

01:41:19   so long and it's like right away it was [TS]

01:41:22   just like everything was dialed 215 not [TS]

01:41:26   just 11 but 15 Gotham City was grimmer [TS]

01:41:30   know and uglier on all of the grotesque [TS]

01:41:34   curries of you know whether it's the [TS]

01:41:36   villains whatever it just everything was [TS]

01:41:38   just pushed up into this level that had [TS]

01:41:40   me cringing for most of this movie [TS]

01:41:43   that's good news the next batman movie [TS]

01:41:45   is much more colorful yeah yeah but [TS]

01:41:47   everybody was there huh [TS]

01:41:49   i I don't understand I don't understand [TS]

01:41:52   why this movie [TS]

01:41:54   I why I liked it so much in my memory I [TS]

01:41:57   I that shall find that well well yeah [TS]

01:42:01   Michael Keaton but surely but know that [TS]

01:42:04   the the thing i love about the the [TS]

01:42:08   original batman movie is that it is [TS]

01:42:11   weird and I just assumed that Batman [TS]

01:42:15   Returns was in that same vein with a [TS]

01:42:19   cooler Batman suit and some other stuff [TS]

01:42:22   and yeah Michelle Pfeiffer but yeah [TS]

01:42:26   member this is what this is one of those [TS]

01:42:28   movies that I really shouldn't have [TS]

01:42:30   watched again I should have noticed but [TS]

01:42:32   convince myself that I enjoyed it [TS]

01:42:35   apologies to glen world yeah yeah yeah [TS]

01:42:40   well you know Michael Keaton that I'm [TS]

01:42:43   gonna say a Michael Keaton deserved [TS]

01:42:46   better that I i really like to be still [TS]

01:42:50   got ya [TS]

01:42:51   uh yeah I know I I like the performance [TS]

01:42:53   in Batman and actually I like what [TS]

01:42:55   little we see of him as Bruce Wayne in [TS]

01:42:58   Batman Returns that stuff with Michelle [TS]

01:43:00   Pfeiffer's he got kicked in the head [TS]

01:43:01   hard enough and looking out yeah I like [TS]

01:43:04   that boardroom scene between him and [TS]

01:43:05   Christopher Walken I want yeah that's [TS]

01:43:07   that's excellent keep cutting to him in [TS]

01:43:09   the Batcave is like mm yes language i [TS]

01:43:12   see no right parents yes and then that's [TS]

01:43:15   it like wait what is even here it's like [TS]

01:43:18   oh yeah we should probably show him [TS]

01:43:19   before they forget what they're watching [TS]

01:43:21   I'm still in this movie people don't [TS]

01:43:22   forget I'm Batman [TS]

01:43:23   I'm hanging out with Robert will now I'm [TS]

01:43:28   just glad that joel schumacher was able [TS]

01:43:32   to come and restore dignity to the [TS]

01:43:33   franchise pieces of mr. Whelan's book is [TS]

01:43:38   that the history of that man is full of [TS]

01:43:40   wild over reactions from previous [TS]

01:43:42   interesting yes I'm not gonna not what I [TS]

01:43:45   pick up in a future episode we are going [TS]

01:43:46   to watch the tool to joel schumacher [TS]

01:43:49   Batman movies and then what we will what [TS]

01:43:51   do you mean we [TS]

01:43:52   yeah I didn't sign up for that we and [TS]

01:43:56   then then we'll have the Nolan movies [TS]

01:43:59   after that but but for now i would have [TS]

01:44:03   to say that we have discharged your [TS]

01:44:05   duties and I am sorry [TS]

01:44:08   to have made everybody watch batman [TS]

01:44:11   returns because tony is this in the [TS]

01:44:14   braces like banned from the treasure [TS]

01:44:15   Batman or just the church Batman [TS]

01:44:17   recognize the existence of Batman [TS]

01:44:18   returned you know do whatever you want [TS]

01:44:20   people knowing what the pattern where it [TS]

01:44:24   is a bad memory around the Batman [TS]

01:44:25   university curriculum Tony that's what i [TS]

01:44:27   want so far the Batman university [TS]

01:44:29   curriculum is mainly focused on the [TS]

01:44:31   batman animated series and word that's [TS]

01:44:34   what that's where that's that's the [TS]

01:44:35   foundation of love and respect for [TS]

01:44:37   Batman is that good right that's why it [TS]

01:44:41   has such high approval ratings go Batman [TS]

01:44:43   university so the 1989 Batman's kind of [TS]

01:44:46   grandfathered and it's like a [TS]

01:44:47   predecessor of the Batman I I mean there [TS]

01:44:50   are there are elements of this that show [TS]

01:44:52   up in batman the animated series like [TS]

01:44:53   there is an episode called the mechanic [TS]

01:44:56   about the penguin sabotaging the [TS]

01:44:59   Batmobile which makes way more sense [TS]

01:45:01   that the plot point and this one so they [TS]

01:45:03   think they do borrow things from it but [TS]

01:45:05   yeah they be the best thing about this [TS]

01:45:08   movie are the things that gets stolen [TS]

01:45:11   for the animated series and they leave [TS]

01:45:13   eighty-five percent of the rocks behind [TS]

01:45:15   so yeah stripped for parts [TS]

01:45:18   yep i would rather had this movie been [TS]

01:45:21   Christopher Walken as Max Schreck doing [TS]

01:45:25   evil things that have to be countered by [TS]

01:45:28   Bruce Wayne and Batman that would have [TS]

01:45:30   been a way better movie i would rather [TS]

01:45:32   this movie were Christopher walk in as [TS]

01:45:34   Max Schreck in notion rocky yeah yeah [TS]

01:45:38   but I would've been fine whatever [TS]

01:45:40   christopher walken that's fine it's [TS]

01:45:42   christopher rot walking does lots of [TS]

01:45:44   weird stuff while Bruce Wayne and and [TS]

01:45:48   Selena Kyle go out on a date [TS]

01:45:49   now you have a great Tim Burton was just [TS]

01:45:51   like really angry that he hadn't didn't [TS]

01:45:53   have the idea to use the circus gang in [TS]

01:45:55   the Joker movie and so is like I don't [TS]

01:45:57   know they're here [TS]

01:45:58   it was like white why are you guys in [TS]

01:46:00   this movie itself no no [TS]

01:46:02   well because Robin was originally gonna [TS]

01:46:03   be okay yeah it's a mess [TS]

01:46:06   I like what I like at the end when [TS]

01:46:08   there's going to be the big fight and [TS]

01:46:09   they all just leave and I was like it's [TS]

01:46:11   like conservation of bad guys because of [TS]

01:46:13   the big fight with the Joker they're all [TS]

01:46:15   the bad guys that showed up from are so [TS]

01:46:17   it's like it was evening out there [TS]

01:46:19   there's their henchmen that didn't make [TS]

01:46:20   any sense to be there [TS]

01:46:21   in that movie and the henchmen that do [TS]

01:46:23   make sense to be here just disappear in [TS]

01:46:24   this one I'm okay with it comes and does [TS]

01:46:26   nothing but get shots a bluefish a blue [TS]

01:46:29   and zhu tou at the end of this one blue [TS]

01:46:31   pursue mhm [TS]

01:46:34   you know Edward with right after this [TS]

01:46:35   movie I wonder if tim burton was [TS]

01:46:37   thinking i need to remind myself that [TS]

01:46:40   it's important to love movies yeah yeah [TS]

01:46:42   yeah and that's that's a good movie [TS]

01:46:45   I'm like that movie I I I feel for tim [TS]

01:46:48   burton's is best although I complain [TS]

01:46:49   about tim burton because i don't like is [TS]

01:46:51   I don't really like his work but i will [TS]

01:46:53   say i can't imagine that this was a [TS]

01:46:57   particularly fulfilling film for him [TS]

01:46:59   I'm sure was more fulfilling than the [TS]

01:47:01   first Batman it feels more like stuff [TS]

01:47:04   that's up his alley [TS]

01:47:05   but still I'm not sure this is the kind [TS]

01:47:07   of thing that is really his bag so now [TS]

01:47:11   the movie before this between the Batman [TS]

01:47:13   movies with edward scissorhands which is [TS]

01:47:15   pure tim burton saying there you go then [TS]

01:47:17   he went out to the paycheck and then you [TS]

01:47:19   go and then he went made wood right so [TS]

01:47:22   that's what you do not like the paycheck [TS]

01:47:23   and then you go making a passion project [TS]

01:47:24   instead [TS]

01:47:25   Hey look on the right side you got to [TS]

01:47:27   see Danny DeVito just going to town on a [TS]

01:47:29   raw fish so that's an experience you can [TS]

01:47:31   never unsee [TS]

01:47:32   I saw the fifth season of taxi I've seen [TS]

01:47:35   that i want to say although i did not [TS]

01:47:38   enjoy Danny DeVito's performance I [TS]

01:47:41   appreciate how hard he went for it [TS]

01:47:44   I think you know what you're worried [TS]

01:47:46   about getting like that at all [TS]

01:47:47   good for him pilot yeah I was okay with [TS]

01:47:50   it i mean i forgot that it was Danny [TS]

01:47:51   DeVito a lot which which says something [TS]

01:47:53   for ya me too [TS]

01:47:56   yeah i'm willing to give him a lot of [TS]

01:47:57   credit for that he is disgusting an [TS]

01:48:00   awful and violence but he's got weird [TS]

01:48:01   prosthetics and he's actually acting and [TS]

01:48:04   yeah yeah and it's not just like being [TS]

01:48:06   Danny DeVito he's not yeah by the guys [TS]

01:48:09   knows what more do you want [TS]

01:48:10   well that guy should see that how do you [TS]

01:48:12   really i like how long they left it yeah [TS]

01:48:15   he says they know well it could be worse [TS]

01:48:17   at least my nose is gushing blood [TS]
