00:00:12   uncomfortable i'm your host Jason smell [TS]

00:00:13   we as we record this we are weak away [TS]

00:00:15   from the release of star wars the force [TS]

00:00:17   awakens and this could be a little [TS]

00:00:20   change of pace this episode little break [TS]

00:00:22   we did a couple holiday episodes and of [TS]

00:00:23   course I imagine that in the next couple [TS]

00:00:26   of weeks are our episodes are going to [TS]

00:00:28   be devoted to the force awakens but i [TS]

00:00:30   wanted to take that this moment in [TS]

00:00:32   between to talk about the anticipation [TS]

00:00:35   and our expectations a little bit and [TS]

00:00:37   what our plans are and and just just set [TS]

00:00:42   the stage a little bit for the Star Wars [TS]

00:00:45   revival that is to come [TS]

00:00:48   so let me introduce the three people who [TS]

00:00:51   i would i would expect you would expect [TS]

00:00:54   to be here wherever we're talking about [TS]

00:00:56   Star Wars the people who have been on I [TS]

00:00:57   believe essentially all our star wars [TS]

00:00:59   episodes first coming to her coming to [TS]

00:01:03   hear from her sickbed just just revive [TS]

00:01:06   temporarily before retreating there and [TS]

00:01:09   and i'm very glad that she could could [TS]

00:01:11   make it serenity Caldwell I hi i just [TS]

00:01:15   came out of a back to thank to come [TS]

00:01:17   podcast for 45 minutes every record out [TS]

00:01:20   Jason couldn't that's girl you got back [TS]

00:01:22   to take come on that's why it's not that [TS]

00:01:25   serious which has to be some liquid [TS]

00:01:27   while it's dr. droid goes if I could [TS]

00:01:31   just have some tea like back to sac did [TS]

00:01:33   you also the back to t they just heat up [TS]

00:01:36   the stuff from the from the tank it's [TS]

00:01:37   not no don't drink that was the idea is [TS]

00:01:41   that it's like Andy 30 John syracuse you [TS]

00:01:44   heard him of course he's here hi hope [TS]

00:01:46   we're not going to talk about the [TS]

00:01:46   trailer i didn't watch know that would [TS]

00:01:49   be crazy to be wrong [TS]

00:01:50   we can talk about why you didn't watch [TS]

00:01:52   it maybe yeah and a moron hi [TS]

00:01:55   this deal is getting worse all the time [TS]

00:01:57   it is it is well how bad is this deal i [TS]

00:02:00   looked it up [TS]

00:02:01   we did our flash podcast about disney [TS]

00:02:04   announcing the new Star Wars trilogy [TS]

00:02:06   three years ago wow it was October [TS]

00:02:11   thirty-first halloween 2012 [TS]

00:02:14   remember it it was a Thursday warm day [TS]

00:02:17   up but episode 214 this is 276 that is [TS]

00:02:23   how long it's been it's been a long time [TS]

00:02:26   i require an outrageous and once we've [TS]

00:02:28   seen the movie and talked about it did [TS]

00:02:30   we just shut down the podcast are we [TS]

00:02:31   done that it was probably no more star [TS]

00:02:33   wars that i heard they're gonna make a [TS]

00:02:34   new one of these every year it's a rumor [TS]

00:02:37   service its gonna be like next taking [TS]

00:02:40   over apple from the inside this will [TS]

00:02:41   slowly become a star wars' podcast the [TS]

00:02:43   star the star wars a minute will never [TS]

00:02:45   be able to catch up [TS]

00:02:48   never ever they will never be able to do [TS]

00:02:51   it and then in may of 2014 [TS]

00:02:54   we talked about casting and then it [TS]

00:02:57   Thanksgiving of 2014 [TS]

00:02:59   we got the teaser trailer and then of [TS]

00:03:01   course this year they released the the [TS]

00:03:02   final trailer and everybody asked us if [TS]

00:03:05   one final except for like additional [TS]

00:03:08   scenes that kept getting added into [TS]

00:03:09   international versions of the trailers [TS]

00:03:11   which is also pretty funny and everybody [TS]

00:03:12   asks what we're going to do a trailer [TS]

00:03:14   analysis episode which sort of you know [TS]

00:03:16   we did it a couple of times why would [TS]

00:03:17   why would we not do it again and the [TS]

00:03:19   answer was no because a Miss Jones [TS]

00:03:23   siracusa has decided to put himself in a [TS]

00:03:26   bubble as much as possible and not be [TS]

00:03:28   spoiled any further about what's going [TS]

00:03:29   on how's that been going John going [TS]

00:03:31   pretty well actually like a set of a [TS]

00:03:33   bunch of filters on Twitter and my [TS]

00:03:35   eyeballs are really good filter so if I [TS]

00:03:37   see like anything related to star wars [TS]

00:03:40   whether it be a picture or word or [TS]

00:03:42   whatever I just scrolled off the screen [TS]

00:03:44   before I can read it [TS]

00:03:45   do you have somebody to vent like if [TS]

00:03:47   your kids come in to talk to you is [TS]

00:03:48   there someone to vent their topics [TS]

00:03:50   before because you know they can go [TS]

00:03:51   off-book sometimes and I think I've come [TS]

00:03:54   and found one of the computers in the [TS]

00:03:56   house showing like you that trailer [TS]

00:03:58   viewed on YouTube you know my son has [TS]

00:04:01   hasn't he knows enough not to talk to me [TS]

00:04:04   about it you may have AG knots [TS]

00:04:06   you should check nasty and say yeah but [TS]

00:04:08   it works out pretty well like the thing [TS]

00:04:10   that Jason just mentioned that they had [TS]

00:04:11   been adding scenes for international I [TS]

00:04:13   didn't know that that's how well my [TS]

00:04:14   filter is working now John you could [TS]

00:04:16   guess that that's like oh the trailer [TS]

00:04:17   has been released in japan and it has an [TS]

00:04:19   extra see me yeah of course it does of [TS]

00:04:21   course it's surprise after we watch the [TS]

00:04:23   movie i will tell you the few things [TS]

00:04:25   that [TS]

00:04:26   it leaked through my filter that i may [TS]

00:04:27   or may not know I don't even say them [TS]

00:04:29   now but my little girl BBS John is [TS]

00:04:32   actually not sure if this movie is [TS]

00:04:33   longer than the two minutes of footage [TS]

00:04:35   that we've seen JJ Abrams pranking us [TS]

00:04:37   all [TS]

00:04:38   that's what's happening we just go in [TS]

00:04:39   the theater industry back guarantee if [TS]

00:04:41   the movie is cancelled somebody tell me [TS]

00:04:43   well i think i think that there's great [TS]

00:04:45   i mean look Ren and i spent a we had a [TS]

00:04:48   long I message thread on the night that [TS]

00:04:52   the full trailer came out so long where [TS]

00:04:54   we were we almost just recorded that [TS]

00:04:57   just like this just do a do a little [TS]

00:04:58   facetime chat and require dramatic [TS]

00:05:00   reading of your im's good we could I [TS]

00:05:03   gotta check the transcript and we have [TS]

00:05:05   theories all that and it was very [TS]

00:05:06   exciting but what I what I liked about [TS]

00:05:09   it was that although I've seen those [TS]

00:05:10   scenes i think i think JJ Abrams is done [TS]

00:05:12   a good job because although with some [TS]

00:05:14   analysis you can probably get a better [TS]

00:05:16   idea of the shape of the film i really [TS]

00:05:18   don't know I i if there's enough there [TS]

00:05:21   and enough that they may have withheld [TS]

00:05:23   that i really have no idea what this [TS]

00:05:25   what this film is is about other than [TS]

00:05:27   the sort of broad strokes that we got [TS]

00:05:29   essentially from the casting and I like [TS]

00:05:33   that I thought I like feeling even [TS]

00:05:34   though I've seen more of it than you [TS]

00:05:36   have John I like that idea that I'm not [TS]

00:05:39   isolated that with doctor who this year [TS]

00:05:41   I didn't go to the gala freebase spoiler [TS]

00:05:44   forum and I stayed away the whole time [TS]

00:05:46   and it was kind of delightful in in its [TS]

00:05:49   way to to not have any spoilers and not [TS]

00:05:52   know what's coming and just let it let [TS]

00:05:54   it happen and I I'm the real question is [TS]

00:05:56   will any of us be able to get other than [TS]

00:05:58   perhaps John who may be sealed in a [TS]

00:06:00   mayonnaise go in his closet are we going [TS]

00:06:04   to be able to avoid the last few days [TS]

00:06:06   when people start to see it in [TS]

00:06:07   screenings and things and are we going [TS]

00:06:10   to try to avoid damn you're gonna try to [TS]

00:06:11   avoid yeah okay I almost didn't watch [TS]

00:06:13   the last trailer and eventually broke [TS]

00:06:14   down and did it's because you're weak i [TS]

00:06:16   am it's true i fell to the dark side i [TS]

00:06:19   think the the tricky thing you know part [TS]

00:06:23   of the reason for not watching this is [TS]

00:06:24   part of it is just not wanting to be [TS]

00:06:25   spoiled on the movie itself but there's [TS]

00:06:28   also sort of that larger meta picture of [TS]

00:06:30   now the idea that you might go in and [TS]

00:06:33   see a new star wars movie for the first [TS]

00:06:35   time and have it not suck its kind of [TS]

00:06:37   you know novel for the last [TS]

00:06:39   30 odd years so I think you know there's [TS]

00:06:42   also a bit of that hesitancy like a half [TS]

00:06:44   i see anything else I might start [TS]

00:06:46   doubting whether or not you know may [TS]

00:06:48   prejudice myself so I'm gonna try my [TS]

00:06:52   darnedest to not find out anything and [TS]

00:06:55   already I've I'm sure I've seen more [TS]

00:06:57   than i would like to though nothing like [TS]

00:06:59   you just and I don't think there's [TS]

00:07:00   anything that we like particularly [TS]

00:07:01   compromise it's just that every [TS]

00:07:03   additional little seed gets you thinking [TS]

00:07:05   yeah and that's the for me that's always [TS]

00:07:07   the danger is you know being someone who [TS]

00:07:09   watches a lot of movies reads a lot of [TS]

00:07:10   books and sort of writes books works and [TS]

00:07:12   you know look at narrative structures [TS]

00:07:14   things like that [TS]

00:07:15   I I start feeling like a helmet can I [TS]

00:07:16   put these puzzle pieces together and go [TS]

00:07:18   away brain go away brain to go do [TS]

00:07:20   something about you take the settings in [TS]

00:07:22   the trailer right and you could try to [TS]

00:07:23   make an order out of them and that's [TS]

00:07:25   that moment where you're like I kind of [TS]

00:07:27   don't want to do that exact you want to [TS]

00:07:29   leave that alone you don't you don't [TS]

00:07:31   want to explore into that dark crevices [TS]

00:07:33   i mean i think the the majority the vast [TS]

00:07:36   majority of the trailer scenes i think [TS]

00:07:38   are more character building then they [TS]

00:07:40   are necessarily story building which I [TS]

00:07:42   really appreciate because I don't really [TS]

00:07:44   have an idea of how the Ark of the movie [TS]

00:07:46   is going to go i know that there's you [TS]

00:07:48   know planet a-and planet be because they [TS]

00:07:51   look different and God forbid star wars [TS]

00:07:53   as a planet that looks the same or that [TS]

00:07:55   doesn't look the same the entire planet [TS]

00:07:57   over it has different seasons so I know [TS]

00:08:00   they're probably multiple planets in the [TS]

00:08:01   movie but ultimately I think what [TS]

00:08:04   they've done with the what they've done [TS]

00:08:05   with the trailers very much is showcased [TS]

00:08:08   the characters that are going to be [TS]

00:08:10   involved in this and really humanize the [TS]

00:08:12   characters and I think above all else [TS]

00:08:15   like I could piece together i could try [TS]

00:08:17   and piece together stories and I could [TS]

00:08:19   put my own hopes and dreams for certain [TS]

00:08:21   characters prey on my in in my my brain [TS]

00:08:26   but i think that the biggest sort of [TS]

00:08:29   success that in my opinion that JayJay's [TS]

00:08:32   had with the with the trailers has been [TS]

00:08:35   like hey remember those those three [TS]

00:08:38   movies that sort of looked like Star [TS]

00:08:40   Wars but there was no characterization [TS]

00:08:43   at all and the characters were [TS]

00:08:44   essentially cardboard cutouts we're [TS]

00:08:46   going to give you like seven or eight [TS]

00:08:48   trailers including the International [TS]

00:08:49   spots and the and the television [TS]

00:08:53   colors that that show hey this movie is [TS]

00:08:56   essentially nothing but characters and [TS]

00:08:58   their good characters and they have [TS]

00:09:00   depth and personality and wisecracks [TS]

00:09:04   entertainment weekly to the story that [TS]

00:09:06   had something that I thought was [TS]

00:09:07   interesting which are i think is the [TS]

00:09:10   corporate explanation of what they're [TS]

00:09:12   doing which is I think it was JJ Abrams [TS]

00:09:15   said when we thought about what we [TS]

00:09:18   wanted to do that we want what we want [TS]

00:09:20   to do is go back to the original trilogy [TS]

00:09:22   and recapture how people felt about that [TS]

00:09:24   and I thought that was the kindest way [TS]

00:09:27   possible to say forget about them [TS]

00:09:29   student the the prequels son forget [TS]

00:09:32   about them [TS]

00:09:33   we're not going to deny that they exist [TS]

00:09:35   but our goal is to not do them but [TS]

00:09:37   that's basically what they were saying [TS]

00:09:38   and i think that i think that the a lot [TS]

00:09:40   of the sands labor materials like hey [TS]

00:09:42   remember the things you liked about Star [TS]

00:09:43   Wars that's what this movie is it's the [TS]

00:09:45   things you like about the one star wars [TS]

00:09:47   thing I've been doing lately is a mostly [TS]

00:09:50   watching my son play star wars [TS]

00:09:51   battlefront which is the rare in modern [TS]

00:09:55   day star wars game that absolutely [TS]

00:09:58   pretends the prequels do not exist [TS]

00:10:00   I mean basically after the prequels [TS]

00:10:01   every game with a star wars property had [TS]

00:10:04   to at least if not have right frequent [TS]

00:10:07   based game had to like include [TS]

00:10:08   characters or ships or settings or you [TS]

00:10:11   notes or just some acknowledgement of [TS]

00:10:14   those movies existing had defined things [TS]

00:10:15   in the star wars universe before the [TS]

00:10:17   parade was obviously all the game's [TS]

00:10:18   original trilogy games instance [TS]

00:10:20   variables came out it was podracer this [TS]

00:10:21   and moving droid armies around that and [TS]

00:10:25   star wars battlefront here is this [TS]

00:10:26   modern console game i did just looks and [TS]

00:10:30   feels and sounds like the original [TS]

00:10:33   trilogy 100-percent and as far as I'm [TS]

00:10:36   aware there's absolutely nothing in the [TS]

00:10:37   game acknowledge those movies exist you [TS]

00:10:39   know Jason interesting you point out you [TS]

00:10:41   know JJ Abrams talking about this maybe [TS]

00:10:42   sort of the corporate line but i think [TS]

00:10:44   what we are you know realizing from this [TS]

00:10:46   is that this is possibly the file [TS]

00:10:49   certainly the first time in 30 years but [TS]

00:10:51   maybe the first time ever that a Star [TS]

00:10:53   Wars movie has been made by a star wars [TS]

00:10:55   fan because I think we can all agree in [TS]

00:10:58   light of this recent conference George [TS]

00:10:59   Lucas isn't really a star wars fan right [TS]

00:11:01   i mean definitely didn't that's fine but [TS]

00:11:04   he's not not a fan in the way that the [TS]

00:11:05   people who can [TS]

00:11:06   assume that were a fan and so that's an [TS]

00:11:08   entirely different perspective because [TS]

00:11:10   that is the perspective that the most of [TS]

00:11:12   the rest of us are coming up you know [TS]

00:11:13   coming in with so I i think you know JJ [TS]

00:11:18   Abrams I'm sure probably felt the way [TS]

00:11:20   many of us did when the prequels came [TS]

00:11:22   out and is probably just as sort of hell [TS]

00:11:24   bent on not replicating that experience [TS]

00:11:27   so you know he's sort of in our corner i [TS]

00:11:29   guess you could say I think that's [TS]

00:11:31   driving when you look like what Lucas [TS]

00:11:32   has been he's pretty di I feel like he's [TS]

00:11:37   got his billions of dollars and he [TS]

00:11:39   should probably just shut up and not [TS]

00:11:41   talk about Star Wars anymore but yet [TS]

00:11:42   every now and then he in the last month [TS]

00:11:44   he said these things that has just yeah [TS]

00:11:46   that just could just continue with the [TS]

00:11:49   very it's very clear that George Lucas [TS]

00:11:51   does not think Star Wars is what [TS]

00:11:53   everybody who loves it thinks it is [TS]

00:11:55   which explains a lot about the prequels [TS]

00:11:57   and and I think the clincher is when [TS]

00:12:00   asked [TS]

00:12:01   now that he's seen the force awakens [TS]

00:12:03   which he hadn't seen until the last week [TS]

00:12:05   when asked about it he said I think the [TS]

00:12:07   fans are going to love it it's very much [TS]

00:12:09   the kind of movie they've been looking [TS]

00:12:10   for and I i love that quote because it [TS]

00:12:13   puts him at opposition with the fans [TS]

00:12:15   which is exactly the right place for him [TS]

00:12:17   to be and and you're right JJ Abrams is [TS]

00:12:20   a star wars fan and the people really [TS]

00:12:23   the people making this movie r star wars [TS]

00:12:25   fans and and we've seen with some other [TS]

00:12:28   some other stuff like that like the JJ [TS]

00:12:31   abrams star track who's writers were [TS]

00:12:33   were start to start her fans with doctor [TS]

00:12:36   who read relaunch that that's what i was [TS]

00:12:38   going to bring up the dangers of this [TS]

00:12:39   entrance to think like the doctor who [TS]

00:12:41   that the relaunch of doctor who with [TS]

00:12:43   Russell T Davies has a big goof and [TS]

00:12:46   doing doctor who [TS]

00:12:48   it had good aspects of it but I think if [TS]

00:12:50   there was also it also had bad aspects [TS]

00:12:52   where like it not gonna say it's like [TS]

00:12:54   fan fiction but where it says you know i [TS]

00:12:57   said with the Daleks in the Cybermen [TS]

00:12:58   haven't like a rap battle that was [TS]

00:13:00   pretty much fanfiction like you can you [TS]

00:13:03   can be in too deep and I here here i am [TS]

00:13:05   in my little bubble of trying to not [TS]

00:13:06   know things and I've actually what i [TS]

00:13:07   found is it's kind of leading me [TS]

00:13:09   speaking of the dark side toward towards [TS]

00:13:11   like a I'm like going to the cave on [TS]

00:13:13   Dagobah like solid thinking we would you [TS]

00:13:17   bring with you I'm [TS]

00:13:18   having trouble holding onto the [TS]

00:13:19   possibility that I could like this movie [TS]

00:13:21   more than I like to be the recent Star [TS]

00:13:22   Trek movies not Star Wars like I'm not [TS]

00:13:24   even like oh you see I'm saying am I [TS]

00:13:27   even gonna like this movie as much as I [TS]

00:13:28   like to read i'm not even a big star [TS]

00:13:30   trek fan and I didn't like you know that [TS]

00:13:32   movies are fun and like i like is i had [TS]

00:13:34   the best I can help for this that I'm [TS]

00:13:35   gonna go to Star Wars movie and best [TS]

00:13:37   case scenario i'll come out gone [TS]

00:13:39   that was a fun movie which is exactly [TS]

00:13:40   what I thought after the day's rooms the [TS]

00:13:42   to start movies they were funny movie [TS]

00:13:44   every time I see them again on TV and [TS]

00:13:45   like these are fun these are nice but [TS]

00:13:48   then i say is that is that all i can [TS]

00:13:50   expect out of a Star Wars movie so I [TS]

00:13:52   don't know I'm a little bit fearful of a [TS]

00:13:54   Star Wars movie by a plan and i'm trying [TS]

00:13:56   to think back to like the other aspect [TS]

00:13:58   was like is there any piece of media [TS]

00:14:00   that is it going to feel the way started [TS]

00:14:02   obviously not cuz resource moves me [TS]

00:14:04   younger and their formative and so on [TS]

00:14:05   and so forth what is the most profound [TS]

00:14:07   media experience that I've had in the [TS]

00:14:09   past several years as an adult and I [TS]

00:14:13   have trouble thinking of what those [TS]

00:14:14   might be I mean most recent memory i [TS]

00:14:16   guess i like the best thing i've seen in [TS]

00:14:17   moving pictures like this past year is [TS]

00:14:19   probably something like mr. robot which [TS]

00:14:20   really surprised me and i found really [TS]

00:14:22   intriguing and interesting but it's also [TS]

00:14:23   very weird not like Star Wars at all so [TS]

00:14:25   like whatever your answers that like [TS]

00:14:27   what have you seen your brother movie or [TS]

00:14:29   TV in your adult life that has come [TS]

00:14:32   close to being as important to you as [TS]

00:14:35   you know things that you've seen your [TS]

00:14:37   formative your road was pretty [TS]

00:14:38   impressive to me it's still sticking [TS]

00:14:41   with me which is impressive given that [TS]

00:14:43   it's been almost a year i would agree [TS]

00:14:45   with mr. robot better that was the one [TS]

00:14:48   that sort of came to me off the top of [TS]

00:14:49   my head [TS]

00:14:50   moviesmovies you went into expecting or [TS]

00:14:53   media you went into expecting something [TS]

00:14:55   completely different than what you [TS]

00:14:57   actually came out with our time together [TS]

00:14:59   movies that are sort of in that same [TS]

00:15:02   vein I mean I could think of like you i [TS]

00:15:04   can make movies that i went into and [TS]

00:15:05   came out thinking hey that was a really [TS]

00:15:06   fun movie and I can think of movies that [TS]

00:15:08   i went in and went into and came out [TS]

00:15:10   thinking hey that was a really good [TS]

00:15:12   movie and you know the latter case would [TS]

00:15:14   be something like I saw spotlight [TS]

00:15:16   recently which is about the Boston Globe [TS]

00:15:18   uncovering the the Catholic Church [TS]

00:15:20   scandal here in Boston great movie [TS]

00:15:22   not exactly kind of the star wars vain i [TS]

00:15:25   actually think this thing that's closest [TS]

00:15:26   in my mind is reading the expanse books [TS]

00:15:29   i actually I really love this one [TS]

00:15:31   I mean for books that are you know 500 [TS]

00:15:33   600 pages I just devoured those and they [TS]

00:15:35   to me they read is very cinematic so I'm [TS]

00:15:39   looking forward to that being translated [TS]

00:15:41   the screen but again that's it feels a [TS]

00:15:43   little too close in some ways because [TS]

00:15:44   it's like it's almost like riding on [TS]

00:15:46   Star Wars coattails to a certain extent [TS]

00:15:48   you know space adventure and and i don't [TS]

00:15:51   know i think you're right John that the [TS]

00:15:52   problem being that not only is this [TS]

00:15:54   where these formative and things that we [TS]

00:15:56   saw you know as a as young as young [TS]

00:15:59   people but also they were you know kind [TS]

00:16:03   of the revolutionary in their own way [TS]

00:16:05   right like in the context of the cinema [TS]

00:16:07   that was going on there so it's it's a [TS]

00:16:09   lot of lot of boxes to check to to find [TS]

00:16:12   something that appeals to you at that [TS]

00:16:13   age that also causes such a big seismic [TS]

00:16:16   shift in the way that things are done i [TS]

00:16:19   think actually the closest thing is sort [TS]

00:16:21   of a media experience in some ways the [TS]

00:16:23   the marvel cinematic universe and the [TS]

00:16:25   fact that they've created this huge like [TS]

00:16:28   just like huge Hydra like technical [TS]

00:16:31   property that crosses all these [TS]

00:16:33   different genres and different types of [TS]

00:16:36   media is just utterly unlike anything [TS]

00:16:39   that i have seen before in any way as [TS]

00:16:43   star star wars certainly gets the [TS]

00:16:44   closest in that way but even it was [TS]

00:16:46   fairly limited compared to the MCU which [TS]

00:16:49   seems to have all these different [TS]

00:16:50   properties everywhere on TV you know in [TS]

00:16:53   movies on netflix direct TV series some [TS]

00:16:56   comic books all of that it's just it's a [TS]

00:16:58   its enormous undertaking and i don't [TS]

00:17:01   think i would have been possible without [TS]

00:17:02   star wars of success but that's where [TS]

00:17:04   the closest i can think of something [TS]

00:17:05   that is just kind of taken on a life of [TS]

00:17:08   its own criticized one movie to take [TS]

00:17:10   their place [TS]

00:17:11   haha MCU is definitely a feat and that [TS]

00:17:16   definitely I think right off of the [TS]

00:17:18   previous and prior success of Star Wars [TS]

00:17:20   I don't know it's and it's it's an [TS]

00:17:24   interesting question to think about i [TS]

00:17:27   think for a fury road was a good example [TS]

00:17:28   because you wrote is not new like oh if [TS]

00:17:32   you're going to do something no movie [TS]

00:17:33   has ever done before because they're [TS]

00:17:34   been mad max moves before and I think [TS]

00:17:36   nothing in fury road was particularly [TS]

00:17:39   groundbreaking terms of the boundary it [TS]

00:17:41   was just done really well and distilled [TS]

00:17:44   down to it [TS]

00:17:45   essence and the reason it stood out so [TS]

00:17:46   much is because modern movies feel like [TS]

00:17:48   they have to have all these particular [TS]

00:17:49   elements and sort of a feeling and the [TS]

00:17:52   paces ferry road is like cut out all [TS]

00:17:54   that distill it down to this very [TS]

00:17:56   concentrated form of a particular thing [TS]

00:17:59   that had existed in the past that were [TS]

00:18:00   all kind of like had our help [TS]

00:18:01   blonde back in the theater because like [TS]

00:18:03   oh yeah that I remember that and this is [TS]

00:18:06   a really good example of that and I [TS]

00:18:08   haven't seen a movie like this in a long [TS]

00:18:09   time and it you know and thatthat's what [TS]

00:18:12   stood out to me that like I think that [TS]

00:18:15   probably road did was maybe the most [TS]

00:18:17   affecting theater experience I've had in [TS]

00:18:20   awhile but because it was so pure and [TS]

00:18:24   you know so primal it doesn't quite fall [TS]

00:18:27   into the same category as me as a movie [TS]

00:18:30   that just like really stick with sticks [TS]

00:18:31   with being because I I you know I'm [TS]

00:18:33   gonna watch that movie for years and [TS]

00:18:34   years i'm going to keep it in my [TS]

00:18:36   collection i'm going to treasure it [TS]

00:18:37   doesn't feel like that to me it doesn't [TS]

00:18:39   stick in your mind the same way but it [TS]

00:18:42   does it's funny to me because fury road [TS]

00:18:44   kind of feels like the Orson Welles of [TS]

00:18:46   sci-fi movies where it's just it's it's [TS]

00:18:48   such a great its impeccably built [TS]

00:18:51   science fiction film um and it just it [TS]

00:18:56   hits all of the buttons but it doesn't [TS]

00:18:58   you know i'm i'm picturing you know the [TS]

00:19:00   thing that that star wars really did for [TS]

00:19:02   me is a kid is it gave me something to [TS]

00:19:04   identify with and something to strive [TS]

00:19:06   towards in a strange way and it's like I [TS]

00:19:08   would you know I built God knows how [TS]

00:19:11   many cardboard spaceships from age 72 [TS]

00:19:14   age 15 and I can't imagine building [TS]

00:19:17   cardboard war rigs to this to the same [TS]

00:19:22   extent yeah I mean I think about it and [TS]

00:19:24   like if if we're talking about films in [TS]

00:19:27   particular that affect me is like I I [TS]

00:19:29   would categorize some certain pixar [TS]

00:19:31   films in that category [TS]

00:19:33   I know you know Wally is not the most [TS]

00:19:35   not the not the best pixar film but [TS]

00:19:38   definitely would is very affecting and [TS]

00:19:40   it's something that I go back to a lot [TS]

00:19:42   and now I feel like I saw when I was old [TS]

00:19:45   enough to both appreciate it as a as a [TS]

00:19:48   film as well as you know it I wouldn't [TS]

00:19:51   consider that a formative because it [TS]

00:19:52   came out past college I don't know it's [TS]

00:19:55   I think that bringing up animation that [TS]

00:19:57   remind [TS]

00:19:57   me if I had to pick a movie that I saw [TS]

00:19:58   on scene in my adult life not seen in my [TS]

00:20:01   adolescence formative years that is [TS]

00:20:02   really stuck with me to the green stars [TS]

00:20:04   have I don't have to go through the [TS]

00:20:05   Miyazaki's and so yeah I was gonna say [TS]

00:20:07   yeah I think about those a lot [TS]

00:20:09   they really stuck with me I do watch it [TS]

00:20:10   over and over again i do treasure them [TS]

00:20:12   in the same way that I try to star wars [TS]

00:20:13   what what I'm getting at is like is it [TS]

00:20:15   even possible because a lot of the [TS]

00:20:17   criticism is like there is no movie that [TS]

00:20:18   you can never see that is going to be as [TS]

00:20:20   important to you as Star Wars was two [TS]

00:20:22   people who were you know mostly mine [TS]

00:20:23   Jason hbu guys two or there's no music [TS]

00:20:25   ever gonna hear that's that's gonna [TS]

00:20:27   affect you as much as the music and [TS]

00:20:28   adolescents and I just don't think [TS]

00:20:30   that's true because a lot of miyazaki [TS]

00:20:32   wasn't even made until I was completely [TS]

00:20:34   an adult and it's really important to me [TS]

00:20:37   and really you know knock my socks off [TS]

00:20:39   and i keep going back to us I believe it [TS]

00:20:41   is possible i'm trying to come to become [TS]

00:20:43   okay with not watching any of the stuff [TS]

00:20:45   related to star wars is am I gonna be [TS]

00:20:48   okay if the star wars movie comes out [TS]

00:20:50   and it's not like Miyazaki's to me but [TS]

00:20:53   it's merely a good movie in the same way [TS]

00:20:55   like for me that I enjoyed the new star [TS]

00:20:57   trek movies or did you know that you [TS]

00:20:59   might enjoy a good you know [TS]

00:21:00   Marvel Cinematic Universe movie we okay [TS]

00:21:02   with that if it comes out and it does [TS]

00:21:03   that like obviously like oh it's better [TS]

00:21:05   than the prequels yeah it's still better [TS]

00:21:07   than the prequels right like I mean we [TS]

00:21:08   had the extremes i guess is the way you [TS]

00:21:10   can put it is like we've we've seen what [TS]

00:21:11   happens when everything is firing on all [TS]

00:21:13   cylinders and working and is just sort [TS]

00:21:15   of you know genius level stuff and we've [TS]

00:21:18   seen the other end where it's just [TS]

00:21:19   garbage and so chances are it probably [TS]

00:21:23   will be somewhere in between right and [TS]

00:21:25   you are we okay with that [TS]

00:21:27   I think I'm okay with that I mean there [TS]

00:21:29   have been enough Star Wars properties [TS]

00:21:30   that i have certainly enough stars [TS]

00:21:32   properties that I've read that were [TS]

00:21:34   terrible and i read it because hey more [TS]

00:21:36   star worse I've you know Chewbacca dying [TS]

00:21:40   i can i'm glad that's not canon anymore [TS]

00:21:42   because you know I I could have I could [TS]

00:21:44   easily erase that from my memory but I'm [TS]

00:21:46   you know I mean I stuck with the clone [TS]

00:21:49   wars despite the fact that some of the [TS]

00:21:50   early episodes are rough going and you [TS]

00:21:52   get a lot of really you know you you you [TS]

00:21:54   get rewarded for that there's some great [TS]

00:21:55   moments in clone wars in Star Wars [TS]

00:21:59   rebels is a fantastic show and i don't [TS]

00:22:03   think i would have given that a chance [TS]

00:22:04   originally had I not seen clone wars and [TS]

00:22:08   I kind of feel like if it's if it's [TS]

00:22:09   anything even remove [TS]

00:22:10   Lee in that vein where it's like yet if [TS]

00:22:13   I'm having fun and it gives me glimmers [TS]

00:22:16   of the of the feeling like if it puts a [TS]

00:22:18   smile on my face and it it doesn't [TS]

00:22:22   necessarily i don't think it necessarily [TS]

00:22:24   has to be brand-new nostalgia like [TS]

00:22:29   instant nostalgia it doesn't have to be [TS]

00:22:31   a groundbreaking phone and it doesn't [TS]

00:22:33   have to at least for me be you know the [TS]

00:22:36   end-all-be-all Star Wars movies if I saw [TS]

00:22:38   Star Wars movie it was better than [TS]

00:22:39   Empire i think i would have to question [TS]

00:22:41   my entire life so I I feel like I'm okay [TS]

00:22:45   with it you know i'm ok with it just [TS]

00:22:47   settling into the pantheon as this is a [TS]

00:22:49   really good piece of Star Wars lore that [TS]

00:22:51   once you've reached average watch the [TS]

00:22:52   original trilogy this is what you should [TS]

00:22:54   see next because this you know carries [TS]

00:22:57   on the story and really interesting [TS]

00:22:59   things happen I would be okay with that [TS]

00:23:01   and as a side note it looks like we're [TS]

00:23:04   going to get a female protagonist you [TS]

00:23:06   know just guessing here hypothetically [TS]

00:23:07   but it looks like we're gonna get a [TS]

00:23:08   female protagonist in Star Wars which is [TS]

00:23:10   pretty darn exciting regardless and I'm [TS]

00:23:14   just like I'm i'm really looking forward [TS]

00:23:16   to that [TS]

00:23:17   let me take a break to tell you about [TS]

00:23:54   they provide their own commentary tracks [TS]

00:23:58   the cannon episode one might be the most [TS]

00:24:00   contentious commentary track ever Amy [TS]

00:24:02   and Devin take on goodfellas that's [TS]

00:24:05   totally in the canon by the way and then [TS]

00:24:07   there's super-ego forgotten classics [TS]

00:24:10   this is a comedy podcast where the [TS]

00:24:12   people from super ego which is another [TS]

00:24:14   podcast improvise a famous work of [TS]

00:24:17   fiction [TS]

00:24:18   ok improvising a work of fiction it's an [TS]

00:24:21   interesting idea [TS]

00:24:21   wait for it they are not familiar with [TS]

00:24:23   that worked [TS]

00:24:24   not at all they get the title the first [TS]

00:24:26   and last lines and the names of the [TS]

00:24:28   characters and the rest is up to them so [TS]

00:24:30   the first episode of that it's the Red [TS]

00:24:33   Badge of Courage a book that I hate and [TS]

00:24:36   it's ridiculous and that's all the [TS]

00:24:38   better i think that the super-ego [TS]

00:24:40   forgotten classics version is ridiculous [TS]

00:24:42   it can't be worse than the original [TS]

00:24:44   sorry to Stephen Crane fans out there so [TS]

00:24:46   anyway how that FM has so much the [TS]

00:25:20   questions we have to ask is what is [TS]

00:25:22   disney doing here because you Disney [TS]

00:25:23   bought lucasfilm for billions of dollars [TS]

00:25:25   several billion dollars and you know [TS]

00:25:27   they're not buying this for a nostalgia [TS]

00:25:29   trip right there buying this to be one [TS]

00:25:32   of these eternal franchise properties [TS]

00:25:35   that appeals to young and old alike [TS]

00:25:36   right and the idea is so that's not what [TS]

00:25:39   Star Wars has been right when Star Wars [TS]

00:25:41   came out it's not just that we were [TS]

00:25:43   young or not born yet but that they were [TS]

00:25:46   singular those first movies were all of [TS]

00:25:50   Star Wars and yeah there were some [TS]

00:25:51   ancillary stuff but it was early and now [TS]

00:25:54   for Star Wars to be what you know to [TS]

00:25:57   make back [TS]

00:25:57   disney's investment it needs to be [TS]

00:25:59   franchise it needs to be a movie series [TS]

00:26:02   that with a new movie every year and be [TS]

00:26:04   you know what a modern and TV spin-offs [TS]

00:26:06   and all these things that that star wars [TS]

00:26:08   needs to be so it's never gonna be the [TS]

00:26:10   same but i do think that disney one star [TS]

00:26:13   wars to be for everybody and and so even [TS]

00:26:19   if we don't even know what we get is [TS]

00:26:22   different from seeing the original [TS]

00:26:23   movies and it's more like you know a [TS]

00:26:27   little bit it just us being happy that [TS]

00:26:30   we're playing in that world and people [TS]

00:26:32   are ripping off of the things that we [TS]

00:26:34   know by heart from those other movies [TS]

00:26:35   like watching a band that we loved [TS]

00:26:38   from 20 years ago or for some of us on [TS]

00:26:41   this conversation 10 years ago you know [TS]

00:26:43   along to when we were kids [TS]

00:26:45   um and that that will be good for us but [TS]

00:26:49   I think that's not good enough for [TS]

00:26:50   disney and I think that's the other part [TS]

00:26:51   of what's being crafted here is they [TS]

00:26:53   want this to be something that I a [TS]

00:26:56   teenager would really like and that a [TS]

00:26:58   ten-year-old would would really like and [TS]

00:26:59   buy the toys for and all of those things [TS]

00:27:01   and become a lifelong star wars fan too [TS]

00:27:03   and that's all that's a lot to ask and [TS]

00:27:05   it may be unreasonable and the net [TS]

00:27:08   result may be that it is something like [TS]

00:27:09   like like John said about Marvel movies [TS]

00:27:12   or star trek movies where you come out [TS]

00:27:13   of the theater as a jaded adult and [TS]

00:27:15   you're like yeah that was a fine piece [TS]

00:27:17   of of entertainment but not not life [TS]

00:27:20   changing it for us but i would say the [TS]

00:27:24   Disney would succeed and and and [TS]

00:27:26   Lucasfilm would would succeed if we came [TS]

00:27:28   out liking it [TS]

00:27:29   feeling better about the franchise as a [TS]

00:27:31   whole getting you know that warm glow of [TS]

00:27:35   things that we recognized and loved [TS]

00:27:37   being playback for us a little bit in [TS]

00:27:38   new ways and that you know the other [TS]

00:27:41   part of this gets fulfilled which is [TS]

00:27:43   that you know the kids want to buy the [TS]

00:27:45   toys & and play and and no more about [TS]

00:27:48   Star Wars well and part of the other [TS]

00:27:50   sort of ingredient there is that tastes [TS]

00:27:52   have changed as well right I mean [TS]

00:27:53   because of what star wars didn't because [TS]

00:27:56   of all the other media that we've [TS]

00:27:57   experienced over the last you know 10 or [TS]

00:27:59   20 years 30 years etc we all have [TS]

00:28:03   different expectations for movies now so [TS]

00:28:06   you know in some ways putting up the [TS]

00:28:08   star trek movies in the Marvel movies is [TS]

00:28:09   a good barometer because it is kind of [TS]

00:28:11   you know those are attempts to sort of [TS]

00:28:13   distill that like this is the experience [TS]

00:28:15   we want to sell to everybody into like a [TS]

00:28:18   concrete little package that's like it's [TS]

00:28:20   got everything it's got action it's got [TS]

00:28:21   adventure it's got outer space [TS]

00:28:23   you know and in the appeals to everybody [TS]

00:28:25   and so the formula and and you know [TS]

00:28:29   ingredients of moviemaking have changed [TS]

00:28:32   in some ways compared to you know back [TS]

00:28:35   in 1977 where a nobody was making things [TS]

00:28:39   in quite that quite that packaged a [TS]

00:28:42   format that point and so moviemaking has [TS]

00:28:45   been home to this risky perfect engine [TS]

00:28:47   of commercialism and so I think you know [TS]

00:28:49   in some ways to [TS]

00:28:51   that means that everything sort of [TS]

00:28:53   levels out as we go because our [TS]

00:28:56   expectations lower and the movies you [TS]

00:28:58   know maybe get a little bit better but [TS]

00:29:00   everything sort of tends towards that [TS]

00:29:02   middle ground I i don't know but i do [TS]

00:29:05   i'm not sure maybe maybe some you know [TS]

00:29:07   kids some seven-year-olds gonna walk out [TS]

00:29:09   of this movie and you know not having [TS]

00:29:11   seen any other Star Wars movies and [TS]

00:29:13   their eyes are going to be opened in [TS]

00:29:15   this is going to have the effect on them [TS]

00:29:17   that it had on offs back then but yeah [TS]

00:29:19   it's it's hard to tell because you can't [TS]

00:29:21   sort of really can't run the experiment [TS]

00:29:22   again right now the franchise that [TS]

00:29:24   actually reminds me the most of sort of [TS]

00:29:26   this this reinvention is a little bit [TS]

00:29:29   doctor who you think about you know I i [TS]

00:29:33   ended up watching old doctor who but not [TS]

00:29:35   until long after i had discovered the [TS]

00:29:37   new episodes and I became a fan solely [TS]

00:29:41   from the new episodes and then and that [TS]

00:29:43   new world building and since then i've [TS]

00:29:45   gone back and I've been like oh this is [TS]

00:29:47   why people loved it so much you know in [TS]

00:29:49   the past and then also been able to [TS]

00:29:50   enjoy the newer stuff from the new [TS]

00:29:52   doctors and and emphasized with all of [TS]

00:29:55   that and I I feel like there is a great [TS]

00:29:58   potential for if Disney does this right [TS]

00:30:01   and all indications seem to to point [TS]

00:30:04   toward yes they are in fact doing this [TS]

00:30:06   right and there is you know potential [TS]

00:30:09   here we could be looking at that and I [TS]

00:30:12   mean honestly I hate to say this but [TS]

00:30:14   like I know kids who are obsessed with [TS]

00:30:16   Star Wars because it sounds horrible to [TS]

00:30:19   say but like their first their first [TS]

00:30:21   exposure to it was the prequels which [TS]

00:30:24   seems like a horrible thing to do to a [TS]

00:30:25   child but the children really don't [TS]

00:30:28   realize what's good or not like when [TS]

00:30:29   you're really little kids have bad taste [TS]

00:30:31   right kids yeah kids can have bad taste [TS]

00:30:35   but no i mean like you'll see like I one [TS]

00:30:41   of my my fiancé's cuz around meet [TS]

00:30:45   nephew is is completely obsessed with [TS]

00:30:47   Star Wars and all is he all he seen as [TS]

00:30:49   the prequels but he he loves the idea [TS]

00:30:51   he's like I would you know I want to [TS]

00:30:53   pilot a fighter and I can't wait for the [TS]

00:30:55   force awakens and I think that Jedi are [TS]

00:30:59   so cool like he didn't get the you know [TS]

00:31:02   the small picture details that we [TS]

00:31:03   focused on his adults big [TS]

00:31:04   like oh my god this is awful he focused [TS]

00:31:07   on the big picture stuff the stuff that [TS]

00:31:08   makes star wars star wars and I'm [TS]

00:31:11   praying that you know force awakens is [TS]

00:31:12   heads and shoulders a better than than [TS]

00:31:16   the prequels but still it gives you know [TS]

00:31:19   it gives me hope that no matter what a [TS]

00:31:22   generation of children will come away [TS]

00:31:23   being like Star Wars is part of our life [TS]

00:31:26   four stars as part of our blood will [TS]

00:31:27   pick it up you know from from the new [TS]

00:31:30   generation so to speak [TS]

00:31:31   you're right about when we can be done [TS]

00:31:33   John mentioned that there is definitely [TS]

00:31:35   an aspect of the of the fanfiction thing [TS]

00:31:37   and we want though the Doctor Who [TS]

00:31:38   rebooted but at the same time it was [TS]

00:31:39   fans who understood why they were fans [TS]

00:31:41   and when they when they perhaps even [TS]

00:31:44   though they were also world-class TV [TS]

00:31:46   writers when they would slip and put in [TS]

00:31:48   things that work basically fanservice [TS]

00:31:49   you know uh no giving fans what fans [TS]

00:31:54   want is not always the worst thing in [TS]

00:31:56   the world especially if you're trying to [TS]

00:31:57   revive a fandom that has been on hard [TS]

00:31:59   times and Doctor Who fandom certainly [TS]

00:32:01   was and when I look at the when I go to [TS]

00:32:03   that doctor convention in LA every year [TS]

00:32:05   good lord it is young now in a way that [TS]

00:32:08   it was not even five years ago and um [TS]

00:32:11   and that that is a success that is a [TS]

00:32:13   rebooted fandom where it's not just the [TS]

00:32:16   die hard to remember it from the [TS]

00:32:17   eighties it is brand-new people who love [TS]

00:32:20   it because of 2005 through 2015 and that [TS]

00:32:25   is a that that's something that star [TS]

00:32:26   wars strives for and you know aside from [TS]

00:32:30   the marketing blitz which is there and [TS]

00:32:33   the TV shows which are there in the end [TS]

00:32:35   you know if if they do their job right [TS]

00:32:37   then this movie will capture the [TS]

00:32:41   imagination of kids in a similar way at [TS]

00:32:43   least then it captured our imaginations [TS]

00:32:45   as kids I would think you're getting [TS]

00:32:47   back to what Dan said about sort of [TS]

00:32:49   modern moviemaking sensibilities and [TS]

00:32:52   definitely see that in the Star Trek [TS]

00:32:53   like well there have been Star Trek [TS]

00:32:55   movies but here stark movies with the [TS]

00:32:56   new twist and they were made more like [TS]

00:32:58   modern movies right and I think Star [TS]

00:33:02   Wars this the same reason thinking like [TS]

00:33:03   well if they just make a movie in the [TS]

00:33:05   star wars universe in the style of [TS]

00:33:07   modern moviemaking and it's a good movie [TS]

00:33:08   and it's a good story and it's fun to [TS]

00:33:09   watch and it is respectful of the [TS]

00:33:12   the the setting a lot of hands John the [TS]

00:33:15   characters and all that stuff now but [TS]

00:33:16   like you come out and think it's fun but [TS]

00:33:18   i think it's still possible especially [TS]

00:33:21   now where john williams is still alive [TS]

00:33:24   the all the all the original actors are [TS]

00:33:25   still alive [TS]

00:33:27   JJ did this one himself I think it's [TS]

00:33:30   still possible to do kind of miyazaki's [TS]

00:33:34   done because over so many years you know [TS]

00:33:37   if you look at Miyazaki's early movies [TS]

00:33:39   and you look like a spirited away versus [TS]

00:33:42   like castle in the sky [TS]

00:33:44   those movies are separated by many years [TS]

00:33:46   that nothing to do with each other [TS]

00:33:48   really they just made by the same studio [TS]

00:33:51   one of them does look older than the [TS]

00:33:54   other one but throughout all of the [TS]

00:33:56   studio ghibli movies of miyazaki's [TS]

00:33:58   movies there is something there is that [TS]

00:34:01   something that intangible quality of the [TS]

00:34:03   movie that makes you think this is a [TS]

00:34:06   miyazaki movie that is just as magical [TS]

00:34:08   now as it was then and I think there is [TS]

00:34:11   an equivalent of that for Star Wars [TS]

00:34:12   there is there is a certain star wars [TS]

00:34:15   magic that's a combination of you know [TS]

00:34:17   sort of adventure good-natured optimism [TS]

00:34:20   excitement I maybe a little bit of [TS]

00:34:24   novelty but like I don't even think you [TS]

00:34:26   need like oh these amazing special [TS]

00:34:28   effects like miyazaki again and again [TS]

00:34:30   made a movie that you're like there [TS]

00:34:32   there's just something magical about [TS]

00:34:33   this movie and even though it has no [TS]

00:34:34   relation to those other movies and those [TS]

00:34:36   other movies could not exist at all and [TS]

00:34:37   I would watch this one in isolation and [TS]

00:34:39   say there's something about this movie I [TS]

00:34:41   feel like there's something about Star [TS]

00:34:42   Wars the prequels didn't have it all and [TS]

00:34:44   I think it's possible to recapture that [TS]

00:34:47   and have the movie Rigby raised above [TS]

00:34:48   the level of all those just a fun movie [TS]

00:34:51   set in the star wars universe i give [TS]

00:34:52   like I think I feel better about this [TS]

00:34:54   movie when more of them come out which [TS]

00:34:56   is a weird thing to say but like when [TS]

00:34:57   they do the movie where there were [TS]

00:34:59   whatever the one they were doing what [TS]

00:35:00   that's like off of the trilogy not like [TS]

00:35:02   this movie and ecology films Yeah right [TS]

00:35:04   there whatever they're doing the getting [TS]

00:35:06   this thats our plans or whatever other [TS]

00:35:08   stories they want to tell the universe [TS]

00:35:09   those movies and they'll do their thing [TS]

00:35:12   and I think I'll be more comfortable [TS]

00:35:13   those but there is a certain weight of [TS]

00:35:14   expectation oh this is a new trilogy [TS]

00:35:16   with its gonna be you know seven eight [TS]

00:35:18   and nine and seven eight nine can follow [TS]

00:35:20   four five and six [TS]

00:35:21   there's a lot of pressure there and i [TS]

00:35:23   feel like these movies i will feel [TS]

00:35:25   better about said [TS]

00:35:26   Ben probably after it comes out maybe [TS]

00:35:27   after nine different I mean because then [TS]

00:35:30   I'll be like oh yeah it's not all hang [TS]

00:35:31   on this one thing but I just really hope [TS]

00:35:33   like if you're going to recapture that [TS]

00:35:35   star wars magic it's not because the [TS]

00:35:37   original people are doing in the same [TS]

00:35:38   way then you have the miyazaki the magic [TS]

00:35:39   is he was doing all the movies and he [TS]

00:35:41   got better with age and and you know he [TS]

00:35:44   put himself in those movies you can see [TS]

00:35:46   he was still there [TS]

00:35:47   I just want I just want a little bit of [TS]

00:35:49   that magic in this movie before before [TS]

00:35:51   it becomes impossible to get that magic [TS]

00:35:53   and the movies have to become modern [TS]

00:35:55   movies I don't think this has to be a [TS]

00:35:57   modern we can make this can discovery [TS]

00:35:59   recapture the magic kind of in the same [TS]

00:36:00   way that you could say that last crusade [TS]

00:36:02   even though it's a pale shadow raters [TS]

00:36:03   Last Crusade captured some of that [TS]

00:36:05   energy magic because a lot of the same [TS]

00:36:07   people were involved and you can see ya [TS]

00:36:10   couple moments that movie like all this [TS]

00:36:11   is this is indeed this is Indiana Jones [TS]

00:36:13   is this is the guy I know from Raiders I [TS]

00:36:16   just want that in this but I think [TS]

00:36:17   that's possible [TS]

00:36:18   honestly I really do and and going back [TS]

00:36:20   to clone wars i mean i-i think there are [TS]

00:36:22   there moments of that of s star wars [TS]

00:36:24   magic and clone wars and there are [TS]

00:36:26   moments in in rebels that are that REM [TS]

00:36:29   that make me reminisce Star Wars even [TS]

00:36:31   without the original people and in a [TS]

00:36:33   completely different medium i wanted the [TS]

00:36:36   biggest sort of most telling factors and [TS]

00:36:38   sort of this pre anticipation faces I've [TS]

00:36:40   been going in mostly spoiler-free I've [TS]

00:36:41   watched the trailers but I haven't [TS]

00:36:42   really been seeking out spoilers or [TS]

00:36:45   wanted to confirm any potential theories [TS]

00:36:47   i have but i'll watch semi like mostly [TS]

00:36:50   spoiler-free conversations with work [TS]

00:36:52   with with Harrison Ford and with Carrie [TS]

00:36:55   Fisher there if there are a couple [TS]

00:36:57   interviews that they have done that are [TS]

00:36:58   pretty much entirely spoiler-free and [TS]

00:37:01   all they all they're doing the entire [TS]

00:37:03   interview is grinning and being like [TS]

00:37:05   it's really good it's really fun and [TS]

00:37:08   that's not that not like I've seen I've [TS]

00:37:10   seen Harrison have two drunks like her [TS]

00:37:12   support have to drug seller movie where [TS]

00:37:13   it's just like yes it's really good and [TS]

00:37:16   you don't see his eyes light up it's [TS]

00:37:17   just the this my like the fake fake sad [TS]

00:37:19   smile that actors have to do when [TS]

00:37:21   they're not passionately involved in a [TS]

00:37:23   project but watching I think Harrison [TS]

00:37:26   Ford in a dog suit on Jimmy Fallon a [TS]

00:37:29   while a couple a couple month or two [TS]

00:37:31   back and Carrie Fisher last week with [TS]

00:37:35   her dog on I think good morning america [TS]

00:37:38   and both of them seem to have such [TS]

00:37:40   exuberant joy for the film in a way that [TS]

00:37:44   I I feel like you don't see actors with [TS]

00:37:47   this kind of passion for projects that [TS]

00:37:50   they don't actually think are something [TS]

00:37:52   special and and to have the original [TS]

00:37:54   actors and especially Harrison Ford who [TS]

00:37:56   is notoriously grumpy like he's the [TS]

00:37:59   man's in his early seventies he doesn't [TS]

00:38:01   have to he doesn't really have to show [TS]

00:38:03   for movies he doesn't like anymore [TS]

00:38:04   um to see both of them so excited about [TS]

00:38:08   the release of this film and so excited [TS]

00:38:10   about the screenings that they've seen [TS]

00:38:11   that that fills me with that fills me [TS]

00:38:14   with so much new hope [TS]

00:38:16   aho of john i would say on there are [TS]

00:38:19   some interesting opportunities here to [TS]

00:38:21   recapture the magic in different ways [TS]

00:38:22   i'm thinking of again to i'm going to [TS]

00:38:25   bring up a doctor who think that the [TS]

00:38:26   season finale of Doctor Who features [TS]

00:38:28   i'll say asset that is a recreation of a [TS]

00:38:32   unoriginal more or less doctor who set [TS]

00:38:34   from the sixties and/or i'm reminded of [TS]

00:38:38   life when Star Trek The Next Generation [TS]

00:38:39   did that episode that we're Scotty we [TS]

00:38:43   use a holodeck to make the original [TS]

00:38:44   enterprise bridge like they're the road [TS]

00:38:47   one movie next year which is about the [TS]

00:38:50   ceiling of the Death Star plans that [TS]

00:38:51   leads into into episode 4 into the [TS]

00:38:54   original star wars film that's going to [TS]

00:38:56   be interesting because art direction [TS]

00:38:57   wise it can actually have to measure it [TS]

00:38:59   it it will feel like and look like the [TS]

00:39:05   original star wars in a way that this [TS]

00:39:06   film doesn't need to and that's that's [TS]

00:39:10   an interesting opportunity to tell a [TS]

00:39:11   different kind of story too i mean it [TS]

00:39:12   that that's a bit of artistic freedom [TS]

00:39:14   that having these films that are not [TS]

00:39:16   part of the main saga can can provide so [TS]

00:39:19   i'm actually kinda interested in that [TS]

00:39:21   I'm also interested in that what they're [TS]

00:39:22   not doing at least at this point is [TS]

00:39:24   making the whole film series and [TS]

00:39:26   interconnected story like the Marvel [TS]

00:39:28   stories and realizing that their star [TS]

00:39:30   wars advantage here is that they've got [TS]

00:39:32   this this long set of years to play with [TS]

00:39:36   and tell stories in with the first you [TS]

00:39:38   know with with episodes one through [TS]

00:39:39   seven now and and that they're they're [TS]

00:39:44   gonna be able to hop all all all around [TS]

00:39:45   and tell stories from within this rich [TS]

00:39:47   universe [TS]

00:39:48   I think that's exciting the idea of [TS]

00:39:49   seeing other kinds of star [TS]

00:39:51   his movies and other kinds of Star Wars [TS]

00:39:53   content and and you may get some of that [TS]

00:39:55   kind of old vibe feel from rug one I [TS]

00:39:59   don't think there's much less pressure [TS]

00:40:00   with those stories oh yeah i do whatever [TS]

00:40:02   you want like make make a new our [TS]

00:40:04   detective story make make one of them a [TS]

00:40:06   horror movie don't care do her assigned [TS]

00:40:08   IP I it's a big it's a big universe like [TS]

00:40:11   make make a romantic comedy star wars [TS]

00:40:13   universe i don't care go for right it's [TS]

00:40:14   just that the 789 i would like one of [TS]

00:40:18   them doesn't have to you know it doesn't [TS]

00:40:19   have to be fancy services shouldn't be [TS]

00:40:21   in fact I don't want like it almost [TS]

00:40:22   scares me a little bit the original [TS]

00:40:23   characters and of course i love them i [TS]

00:40:25   want to see them again but on the other [TS]

00:40:26   hand my call but don't ruin this because [TS]

00:40:28   this should really be a new story with [TS]

00:40:30   new characters it's not really about you [TS]

00:40:32   and like we talked about in the past [TS]

00:40:34   podcast about this [TS]

00:40:36   what are you gonna do with those little [TS]

00:40:36   characters just like there's a certain [TS]

00:40:39   magic of star wars in the same way I [TS]

00:40:40   think Miyazaki's the best example I can [TS]

00:40:41   think of the certain magic miyazaki and [TS]

00:40:43   even though his movies are just so [TS]

00:40:45   incredibly wildly different from each [TS]

00:40:46   other like you know robots vs creatures [TS]

00:40:49   vs magic did you know little kids adults [TS]

00:40:53   animals just there there's so much [TS]

00:40:57   variation and yet through it all you [TS]

00:40:58   feel this this similarity feel that [TS]

00:41:01   there's something about it that it did [TS]

00:41:03   regard you know even though you know the [TS]

00:41:04   settings are the same and they're not [TS]

00:41:05   the same time period there's no [TS]

00:41:06   characters in common whatsoever you can [TS]

00:41:08   feel it and that's what I want out of [TS]

00:41:10   this like in this does have characters [TS]

00:41:11   in common [TS]

00:41:12   this will have settings and comments is [TS]

00:41:14   part of continuity I just don't think it [TS]

00:41:16   should lean on those things for for the [TS]

00:41:18   feeling I wonder who ever is you know my [TS]

00:41:21   surrogate in this movie I want to care [TS]

00:41:22   about as much as I care about like Luke [TS]

00:41:24   you know flying through the trench or [TS]

00:41:26   you know a character that i can connect [TS]

00:41:29   with as much as Yoda or a villain as [TS]

00:41:31   good as darth vader i mean this [TS]

00:41:32   tolerance i know i obviously not going [TS]

00:41:35   to get it all if it's just it's just [TS]

00:41:37   nearly as good as the star trek movies [TS]

00:41:38   will walk out and probably call it a win [TS]

00:41:40   and then just look forward to for [TS]

00:41:42   further movies in the universe but if [TS]

00:41:43   they're going to capture recapture [TS]

00:41:44   anything original star wars now is the [TS]

00:41:46   time to do it please [TS]

00:41:47   well the good news is I feel like we've [TS]

00:41:49   probably already God we knock on every [TS]

00:41:52   piece of wood is nearby feel like we [TS]

00:41:54   probably already seen the workers that [TS]

00:41:55   we've got to offer in this franchise so [TS]

00:41:57   you know and then again setting a little [TS]

00:42:00   bar but you know it's in the romantic [TS]

00:42:02   comedy [TS]

00:42:03   I know but I've seen the Ewok movies so [TS]

00:42:06   that's pretty much the same thing just [TS]

00:42:07   having like AKA brain trust of of people [TS]

00:42:11   rather than having it be this creator [TS]

00:42:14   who can do whatever he wants would make [TS]

00:42:17   me doesn't even like Star Wars bed with [TS]

00:42:19   me think that it's probably unlikely [TS]

00:42:21   that we'll get something quite as [TS]

00:42:22   disastrous as the prequels but you never [TS]

00:42:25   never seen everything yet you have the [TS]

00:42:26   hobbit movies well one but we've got [TS]

00:42:28   we've got we've got Peter Jackson [TS]

00:42:29   after-the-fact saying Hobbit movies are [TS]

00:42:32   a mess because they didn't give us time [TS]

00:42:33   to to storyboard or time to actually [TS]

00:42:36   solve problems as a director dropped out [TS]

00:42:38   and so he had seven and there's no I [TS]

00:42:39   mean there's a lot of a lot of things [TS]

00:42:40   there but yeah bad things could happen [TS]

00:42:42   yeah like anyway I'm i give them plenty [TS]

00:42:44   of room to make bad movies in the future [TS]

00:42:46   just tried to blow 789 a modest proposal [TS]

00:42:49   from John siracusa time to take a non [TS]

00:42:52   sponsor break i just want to tell [TS]

00:42:53   everybody out there were going to be [TS]

00:42:55   recording our year and wrap up episode [TS]

00:42:57   on December 28 if you have particular [TS]

00:42:59   favorites from the incomparable or being [TS]

00:43:02   comfortable spin-off podcast from 2015 [TS]

00:43:04   send them to podcast at the incomparable [TS]

00:43:07   dot-com we'd love to hear from you and [TS]

00:43:09   then we will celebrate everything 2015 [TS]

00:43:12   in our first episode of 2016 [TS]

00:43:15   because that's how we roll and thanks to [TS]

00:43:18   everybody out there for listening to the [TS]

00:43:19   incomparable this year we really [TS]

00:43:21   appreciate it [TS]

00:43:22   so what's the plan i want to ask you all [TS]

00:43:24   this what's the plan right now and when [TS]

00:43:28   you're thinking about do you when you [TS]

00:43:31   seeing it [TS]

00:43:32   do you plan to see it again have you [TS]

00:43:33   already built in other times you're [TS]

00:43:34   going to see it what is your what is [TS]

00:43:36   your your plan for watching this movie [TS]

00:43:39   ran what's what's your plan [TS]

00:43:41   all right well here's the plan to see it [TS]

00:43:42   thursday night with friends but I [TS]

00:43:44   couldn't get into that screen so I'm [TS]

00:43:45   going thursday night slightly before so [TS]

00:43:48   i get to see it before all my friends [TS]

00:43:49   which kind of is responsible for [TS]

00:43:52   spoilers [TS]

00:43:52   yeah I can shout i can go into the next [TS]

00:43:54   theater as i finish that probably be [TS]

00:43:56   like 30 minutes from the end be like [TS]

00:43:58   that God ours [TS]

00:44:00   yeah but I'm but yeah and I'm going [TS]

00:44:06   with with Rick and I i think we're going [TS]

00:44:10   again friday morning i think that's [TS]

00:44:13   that's what I've heard is then we've [TS]

00:44:14   bought a second round of tickets and [TS]

00:44:18   chances are knowing me will probably go [TS]

00:44:20   again and like monday because i need the [TS]

00:44:22   weekend to like actually digest I see [TS]

00:44:25   all of the ne ne pivotal movies and this [TS]

00:44:28   is a bad habit from when I was a kid but [TS]

00:44:30   like I'll see them three or four times [TS]

00:44:32   mostly partially because i want to get [TS]

00:44:34   sick of them even with super expensive [TS]

00:44:36   movie tickets but part honestly a lot of [TS]

00:44:39   its just enjoying the world building and [TS]

00:44:41   enjoying the scenery and and everything [TS]

00:44:43   that I didn't catch the first time [TS]

00:44:44   because I'm you know your game in the oh [TS]

00:44:47   my god new stuff in this franchise and I [TS]

00:44:52   feel like Star Wars Star Wars is for me [TS]

00:44:54   a special franchise in the way that like [TS]

00:44:57   the MCU just simply isn't i'm not going [TS]

00:44:59   to go see MCU movie 5 times but I will [TS]

00:45:01   definitely see a Pixar movie two or [TS]

00:45:02   three times and i will see a Star Wars [TS]

00:45:04   movie two or three times even if it's [TS]

00:45:06   terrible one [TS]

00:45:07   John what's your plan something about [TS]

00:45:09   thursday i'm in the same shows dan I [TS]

00:45:11   think although it's reserved seating so [TS]

00:45:13   will be seated so i think i think [TS]

00:45:14   there's literally sitting behind me away [TS]

00:45:17   from you guys from the from the 30 [TS]

00:45:19   minutes early if showing your joke but [TS]

00:45:21   this is legit fear that I have for my [TS]

00:45:24   mother most dangerous time is why i'm in [TS]

00:45:26   the theater familiar but sauron to go [TS]

00:45:28   into your clutter and other people are [TS]

00:45:30   coming out and I don't want to see their [TS]

00:45:31   faces or anything or anything they have [TS]

00:45:34   to say i don't want to see hand motions [TS]

00:45:37   I mean I'm glad I'm seeing Thursday [TS]

00:45:39   because I really just need to see it so [TS]

00:45:40   i can safely use the internet again [TS]

00:45:42   right so yeah so thursday and you know [TS]

00:45:45   Thursday's a regular work day so I'm [TS]

00:45:46   just gonna go to work nor the internet [TS]

00:45:48   come home have dinner and go to the [TS]

00:45:49   theater watching and then I'll feel safe [TS]

00:45:51   and then on friday i'm going with my [TS]

00:45:54   wife taking friday off work and we're [TS]

00:45:57   just gonna go see it together and then [TS]

00:45:58   on Saturday the whole family is going [TS]

00:46:00   well that's the full so that's the full [TS]

00:46:01   siracusa three-day extravaganza keep [TS]

00:46:04   adding family members and these are all [TS]

00:46:06   2d screenings by the way I want maybe on [TS]

00:46:09   if I really like it on sunday i'll try [TS]

00:46:11   and imax one or maybe the next weekend [TS]

00:46:13   i'll stop trying imax one because I [TS]

00:46:15   kind of interested to see it in and all [TS]

00:46:17   the formats that it's going to be out in [TS]

00:46:18   assuming it's any good like if I the [TS]

00:46:20   third time i see it like you don't [TS]

00:46:22   you'll know by then [TS]

00:46:23   yeah Shirley Shirley says the man who [TS]

00:46:25   saw phantom menace five times the [TS]

00:46:26   theater surely you'll know about their [TS]

00:46:27   time it's good i only saw episodes two [TS]

00:46:30   and three one time in the house same [TS]

00:46:32   same here [TS]

00:46:33   dan what's your plan yes I too am going [TS]

00:46:36   on Thursday later in the evening at [TS]

00:46:40   which with a with a bunch of people [TS]

00:46:41   including apparently John syracuse [TS]

00:46:43   sitting behind me which should be fun [TS]

00:46:45   just get the commentary is really what [TS]

00:46:46   I'm looking forward to I don't have any [TS]

00:46:49   subsequent showing plans yet but I would [TS]

00:46:53   not bet against seeing it again at some [TS]

00:46:54   point that weekend and I was just [TS]

00:46:56   discussing with some family members [TS]

00:46:57   possibly going over the christmas break [TS]

00:46:59   well i'm visiting them so yeah so I [TS]

00:47:02   think that it will it will definitely be [TS]

00:47:05   cynical times I like John if it is the [TS]

00:47:07   end up being it's good i will probably [TS]

00:47:10   consider an imax showing just because [TS]

00:47:11   I'm curious to see how it looks on a [TS]

00:47:13   giant screen for me it's a it is [TS]

00:47:16   thursday evening with the family were [TS]

00:47:21   all we're all going jamie has a we're [TS]

00:47:25   going to the seven o'clock showing on [TS]

00:47:26   Thursday James gotta a final the next to [TS]

00:47:30   the next day I'm it's too bad she's [TS]

00:47:32   going to see Star Wars she said that for [TS]

00:47:35   study after there is no study during [TS]

00:47:38   Star Wars we're gonna go see Star Wars [TS]

00:47:39   and i have no plans beyond that it's [TS]

00:47:41   great how the movies open on the day [TS]

00:47:43   before they actually open now I don't [TS]

00:47:44   even get this midnight showing started [TS]

00:47:46   like seven the previous day is like [TS]

00:47:48   Christmas creep you know it's so here [TS]

00:47:49   eventually like the really stable me [TS]

00:47:51   nothing in the midnight showing of three [TS]

00:47:53   days before I've seen Tuesday Tuesday [TS]

00:47:55   showings for friday movie before in Los [TS]

00:47:57   Angeles it does happen but you know in [TS]

00:47:59   in some way I actually kind of like it [TS]

00:48:01   because it means not having to be awake [TS]

00:48:04   at night and then go home at three in [TS]

00:48:06   the morning [TS]

00:48:07   anybody remember dark knight the first [TS]

00:48:09   the second Dark Knight movie the second [TS]

00:48:10   Dark Knight movie where it was like what [TS]

00:48:12   two and a half hours long and i didn't [TS]

00:48:14   get home until four in the morning it [TS]

00:48:16   was was a dark time for the Empire i use [TS]

00:48:19   my creaky old man wasn't remember that [TS]

00:48:21   went to the Phantom Menace at a midnight [TS]

00:48:22   showing and then went out to like ihop [TS]

00:48:25   and dissected you type of movie until [TS]

00:48:27   about 5am [TS]

00:48:28   went back to my friends house slept for [TS]

00:48:31   two hours woke up picked up Tony sent [TS]

00:48:34   away from school if it's cool still [TS]

00:48:36   because we were seniors I think or we [TS]

00:48:37   were in freshman in college and then [TS]

00:48:39   went and saw it again [TS]

00:48:41   yeah that was um speaking of dark times [TS]

00:48:45   sleep deprivation explains all they [TS]

00:48:47   realized midnight showings is so much [TS]

00:48:49   fun you can make even more money if you [TS]

00:48:51   showed at 10pm and then I realized well [TS]

00:48:53   we're going to 10pm you can also show at [TS]

00:48:55   7pm couldn't we just really firsthand [TS]

00:48:57   why not what its gonna be like JJ Abrams [TS]

00:48:59   want your rough cut of the movie like I [TS]

00:49:01   think I think what they've realized this [TS]

00:49:03   is a market for people to go out and see [TS]

00:49:05   him a big movie on thursday and then why [TS]

00:49:07   would you hold it for friday at that [TS]

00:49:09   point why not why not extend the weekend [TS]

00:49:11   another day and make money on thursday [TS]

00:49:13   evening at least buy you know I think [TS]

00:49:16   hey if the customers are there then take [TS]

00:49:19   advantage of it so I know so many people [TS]

00:49:21   who are seeing this on thursday that was [TS]

00:49:22   pretty funny i think i was just 3d which [TS]

00:49:24   I'm not thrilled about but you know [TS]

00:49:26   whatever where were we're going to see [TS]

00:49:28   it and hope Jamie gets a good score on [TS]

00:49:31   her finals [TS]

00:49:32   Jason what I'm what theater are you [TS]

00:49:34   seeing it in i'm seeing it as the [TS]

00:49:36   century corte madera which is a single [TS]

00:49:38   screen movie theater which they're [TS]

00:49:40   probably going to close the next [TS]

00:49:41   surprisingly playing star wars are only [TS]

00:49:43   movie for that the screen [TS]

00:49:44   ya welcome that that that is the thing [TS]

00:49:46   that they do is they tend to put the big [TS]

00:49:48   the big you know blockbuster film on [TS]

00:49:50   that one screen with the big with the [TS]

00:49:52   big screen and legend has it this is the [TS]

00:49:54   George Lucas's preferred movie theater [TS]

00:49:57   so i hope it doesn't ruin it by like I [TS]

00:50:01   don't know what he stands up in the [TS]

00:50:03   middle of a movie about how my mommy [TS]

00:50:05   tell you what my outline said it was [TS]

00:50:07   going to get pictures of the circular so [TS]

00:50:09   the next question is well how we gonna [TS]

00:50:12   how are we gonna find time to talk about [TS]

00:50:14   this on the podcast next weekend we're [TS]

00:50:16   going to find the time we're going to [TS]

00:50:18   find some time we're gonna do it we're [TS]

00:50:20   going to do it somehow [TS]

00:50:22   all right i mean i-i literally in the [TS]

00:50:24   incomparable schedule it just says OMG [TS]

00:50:26   star wars on that next weekend and that [TS]

00:50:30   the following weekend it literally says [TS]

00:50:31   OMG more star wars because I figure [TS]

00:50:33   we'll probably have more than one [TS]

00:50:34   episode worth between all of us and [TS]

00:50:37   everybody else in the incomparable [TS]

00:50:39   panelist calendar who is also [TS]

00:50:42   going to see it so you know i do think [TS]

00:50:45   that we're gonna we're gonna have a lot [TS]

00:50:46   of opportunity to break it down a great [TS]

00:50:48   time to announce our new star wars [TS]

00:50:49   sub-caste yeah well there is a feed full [TS]

00:50:52   of everything that the network posts [TS]

00:50:53   about Star Wars so I'm sure climb and [TS]

00:50:56   I'm sure Joe and dan will be doing a [TS]

00:50:58   defocused about it since they've been [TS]

00:50:59   covering all the Star Wars movies on d [TS]

00:51:02   focus lately too but yeah this is yeah [TS]

00:51:05   we we don't need a sub caste dan it's [TS]

00:51:07   all star wars now the resident December [TS]

00:51:10   practically incomparable has just become [TS]

00:51:12   the incomparable Star Wars channel it [TS]

00:51:14   could [TS]

00:51:15   did you realize that I'm Star Wars [TS]

00:51:17   awakens comes out essentially a week [TS]

00:51:19   before christmas day we are literally [TS]

00:51:21   getting Christmas early actually I it [TS]

00:51:24   kind of bugs me that it's so close to [TS]

00:51:25   Christmas I'd hoped you know and some of [TS]

00:51:27   that is just podcast scheduling like [TS]

00:51:29   okay I wish we had more easy AJ more [TS]

00:51:32   weeks you get re ballon d'or Christmas [TS]

00:51:34   but instead it's just like it's right [TS]

00:51:36   before Christmas [TS]

00:51:37   it's right there although you know what [TS]

00:51:39   if they done the previous week then it [TS]

00:51:40   would have been on my birthday and I [TS]

00:51:41   can't handle the star wars movie [TS]

00:51:43   potentially being bad on my birthday [TS]

00:51:44   would just be awful [TS]

00:51:45   this is going to be interesting we've [TS]

00:51:47   invested a lot I mean all the given that [TS]

00:51:49   we were talking about this three years [TS]

00:51:52   ago in you know zero information terms [TS]

00:51:57   at that point just that Lucasfilm had [TS]

00:51:59   bought or I had been bought by disney [TS]

00:52:01   and that there was going to be a new [TS]

00:52:03   trilogy which blew our minds but it you [TS]

00:52:09   know it's come to this which is there is [TS]

00:52:11   a movie we have plans we have tickets [TS]

00:52:12   bought way in advance which is also kind [TS]

00:52:15   of hilarious and it's a it's gonna be a [TS]

00:52:18   real thing that's uh so I'll just sounds [TS]

00:52:20   harken back to one of my cousin's [TS]

00:52:22   telling me that she remembered being in [TS]

00:52:24   school and worrying that you know after [TS]

00:52:26   watching empire that she would die [TS]

00:52:28   before the Jedi came out so everybody [TS]

00:52:30   stay safe out there this because all I'm [TS]

00:52:32   saying that's the same topic came up on [TS]

00:52:34   a recent podcast i was on tonight [TS]

00:52:36   the same thought yeah take no chances [TS]

00:52:38   this week people if you're gonna go [TS]

00:52:39   skydiving put it off just a week [TS]

00:52:42   well I hope I don't break my neck and [TS]

00:52:44   roller derby this weekend that would be [TS]

00:52:45   sad [TS]

00:52:46   well wheel you into the theater don't [TS]

00:52:47   worry I mean yeah the the roller derby [TS]

00:52:50   tournament is called state wars and its [TS]

00:52:53   star wars-themed so you know maybe maybe [TS]

00:52:56   you'll be okay maybe the star wars God's [TS]

00:52:58   will be looking over but yeah i'm [TS]

00:53:01   probably doing too many dangerous things [TS]

00:53:03   this week [TS]

00:53:03   oh well it'll be okay don't know yeah [TS]

00:53:06   yeah don't yeah I'm sure I'm sure we'll [TS]

00:53:08   be fine [TS]

00:53:09   I've got BBA to protect me 20 yeah we [TS]

00:53:11   put a lot of we put a lot of effort into [TS]

00:53:13   this movie so we need to see it now [TS]

00:53:15   yeah but I've decided not to go [TS]

00:53:18   well i should i should say speaking of [TS]

00:53:20   pretty anticipation [TS]

00:53:21   um if you end up it disneyland or disney [TS]

00:53:25   world before you see the movie [TS]

00:53:27   do not go on Star Tours this is this is [TS]

00:53:30   something i discovered and it doesn't [TS]

00:53:32   spoil a whole lot but it definitely is [TS]

00:53:34   like oh this is a new thing this is a [TS]

00:53:37   new and interesting thing that probably [TS]

00:53:40   I shouldn't be seeing right now oh well [TS]

00:53:43   so yeah John I don't think you have any [TS]

00:53:46   plans to go to start to to disneyland [TS]

00:53:48   before seeing the force awakens but you [TS]

00:53:51   know just in case you were thinking of [TS]

00:53:52   like a quick trip down to Florida or [TS]

00:53:53   California just don't do it probably [TS]

00:53:55   about yeah probably just apparently and [TS]

00:53:57   by the only reason I went on Star Tours [TS]

00:53:59   was because you raved about it so much [TS]

00:54:01   and so i figured i'm going to try to [TS]

00:54:02   brave the motion sickness but I could [TS]

00:54:04   end up closing my eyes for a lot of oh [TS]

00:54:06   no [TS]

00:54:07   yeah just as that's a rough ride for me [TS]

00:54:09   but I didn't want to i will probably [TS]

00:54:10   never do it again I'm am looking forward [TS]

00:54:12   to eventually going back to disney after [TS]

00:54:14   they do the whole crazy Star Wars land [TS]

00:54:16   whatever yeah and that's that that's a [TS]

00:54:19   great dick there already [TS]

00:54:21   I think they're already constructing [TS]

00:54:23   they're tearing down the but they were [TS]

00:54:25   tearing animal at Disneyland [TS]

00:54:27   yeah am they took down a bunch of [TS]

00:54:29   disneyland everything's space mountain [TS]

00:54:31   to hyperspace mountain in disneyland [TS]

00:54:33   proper and disney world they they [TS]

00:54:36   basically cordon off a whole section of [TS]

00:54:38   hollywood studios they actually we were [TS]

00:54:40   one day off from seeing the star wars [TS]

00:54:42   launch Bay experience we just timed our [TS]

00:54:45   tickets and properly but on the day that [TS]

00:54:47   I was leaving [TS]

00:54:49   something on Twitter actually messaged [TS]

00:54:51   me and was like you know i would say [TS]

00:54:53   that you guys just missed this being [TS]

00:54:55   here but i'm just in line and I've [TS]

00:54:58   already seen three major spoilers so [TS]

00:55:00   perhaps it was good that you you know [TS]

00:55:02   narrowly missed it was like okay yeah [TS]

00:55:05   they think [TS]

00:55:07   thank you and i miss Twitter person for [TS]

00:55:08   a plotting our are good decisions [TS]

00:55:11   yeah but I the idea of a whole star [TS]

00:55:13   wars-themed part of disneyland that's a [TS]

00:55:15   good idea i think people need to get [TS]

00:55:17   such a good i guess people get such a [TS]

00:55:19   kick out of like the stormtroopers in [TS]

00:55:22   near near the star tours section of of [TS]

00:55:25   disneyland that that will be on the that [TS]

00:55:28   will be a lot of fun but because the [TS]

00:55:30   thing that makes me really excited about [TS]

00:55:32   that is like a few years ago I guess few [TS]

00:55:34   more than a few years ago wanted Wally [TS]

00:55:36   come out 2007-8 something like that they [TS]

00:55:41   had a Wally rolling around in 2008 wet [TS]

00:55:45   disneyland and I'm like the the wally [TS]

00:55:47   was in like a small area and didn't [TS]

00:55:49   really go very far but I'm like you have [TS]

00:55:51   a Wally you have a tiny proof-of-concept [TS]

00:55:53   bb-8 I've seen the real life version [TS]

00:55:56   proof-of-concept bb-8 the concept of [TS]

00:55:59   droids autonomously rolling around [TS]

00:56:01   disney world and disneyland is not out [TS]

00:56:04   of the question and that thrills me [TS]

00:56:05   especially given disney's history with [TS]

00:56:08   really really good [TS]

00:56:11   automatic design like one of the reasons [TS]

00:56:13   why i want to go to someplace like harry [TS]

00:56:15   potter land is the thematics like I [TS]

00:56:18   don't even care about the rights I just [TS]

00:56:19   care about [TS]

00:56:20   oh I'm gonna walk into a section of the [TS]

00:56:21   park and all of a sudden it feels like [TS]

00:56:23   i'm in i'm in harry potter story or all [TS]

00:56:25   of a sudden it feels like I'm on a rebel [TS]

00:56:27   base or you know I'm in the jungle on [TS]

00:56:29   ready to join a Jedi Temple like all of [TS]

00:56:33   these that the potential of that is so [TS]

00:56:37   exciting to me so exciting [TS]

00:56:39   see there's always more to anticipate [TS]

00:56:41   isn't there always always more spoilers [TS]

00:56:45   to avoid yeah that's right so many [TS]

00:56:48   spoilers there are always new spoilers [TS]

00:56:50   being always in motion the spoilers are [TS]

00:56:52   see I can occasionally reference every [TS]

00:56:58   now and then I do it all right well uh [TS]

00:57:01   everybody get your [TS]

00:57:02   you know get ready get ready get your [TS]

00:57:04   get your starter shoes on I don't know [TS]

00:57:06   what those would be put on your on your [TS]

00:57:08   Jedi hat i'll go by those [TS]

00:57:10   three-hundred-dollar boots that Ray is [TS]

00:57:12   wearing in the trailer [TS]

00:57:13   alright well everybody out there i hope [TS]

00:57:14   you to stay safe in this week of [TS]

00:57:16   anticipation don't do anything foolish [TS]

00:57:17   because you need we need you to be there [TS]

00:57:19   at the at the Star Wars premieres two [TS]

00:57:21   and then we will we'll be back here at [TS]

00:57:24   some point next weekend with some cast [TS]

00:57:29   of characters hopefully this one and [TS]

00:57:32   we'll break down at least our initial [TS]

00:57:34   impressions about it i feel like you [TS]

00:57:36   know what will i will have some [TS]

00:57:38   impressions about it and that and and [TS]

00:57:40   that that will be exciting and then [TS]

00:57:41   we'll have another week maybe that to [TS]

00:57:44   put thoughts together in a simple of [TS]

00:57:45   some other panels and talk about it too [TS]

00:57:47   so much more star wars to come in for [TS]

00:57:50   the rest of the month but uh until then [TS]

00:57:53   i would like to thank my stars pals have [TS]

00:57:55   been on this episode 7 journey with me [TS]
