00:00:40   and I got about 12 people who said they [TS]

00:00:41   wanted to be on that episode so we're [TS]

00:00:44   doing two episodes about this is the [TS]

00:00:45   first will be another one a little bit [TS]

00:00:47   later and if this is about to bad Star [TS]

00:00:50   Trek movies i declare them bad even if [TS]

00:00:52   my panel might slightly disagree and [TS]

00:00:54   they'll be ashamed to the stirring the [TS]

00:00:57   original Star Trek cast so we're going [TS]

00:00:58   to be talking tonight about Star Trek [TS]

00:01:01   the motion picture from 1979 and star [TS]

00:01:04   trek the final frontier from 1989 [TS]

00:01:07   directed by mr. william shatner himself [TS]

00:01:10   joining me to talk about these two fine [TS]

00:01:12   well okay these films they are films [TS]

00:01:14   they were put on film are the following [TS]

00:01:18   David jail or hello hello there [TS]

00:01:21   go ahead and Fleischmann hi i have an [TS]

00:01:23   opening statement that i'm saying oh [TS]

00:01:24   stop dating to the end chip sudderth my [TS]

00:01:28   oath of celibacy is on record keishon my [TS]

00:01:31   duties welcome wendover permission [TS]

00:01:35   granted [TS]

00:01:36   Andy not co hello I would like to greet [TS]

00:01:38   you in the form of a 90-minute long [TS]

00:01:40   tracking shots across the bow event i [TS]

00:01:45   will respond by looking on in awe [TS]

00:01:46   silently Monty Ashley shock re live long [TS]

00:01:53   and take a nap halfway through the movie [TS]

00:01:55   Jason and of course it wouldn't be a [TS]

00:01:58   discussion of Star Trek without mr. [TS]

00:01:59   Scott McNulty hello [TS]

00:02:01   row row row your boat gently down the [TS]

00:02:04   road now that's all street like majorly [TS]

00:02:08   metri let's start with dark the motion [TS]

00:02:12   picture and then when i was going to [TS]

00:02:14   star trek five you know what do these in [TS]

00:02:16   chronological order Star Trek the motion [TS]

00:02:17   picture 1979 look the idea was Star Trek [TS]

00:02:20   became a cold success and then there [TS]

00:02:22   were all these sci-fi movies starting [TS]

00:02:23   with star wars that were very successful [TS]

00:02:24   in the late seventies and people at [TS]

00:02:26   Paramount finally haha [TS]

00:02:27   I've got a great idea let's let's do [TS]

00:02:30   that in fact they had just like done all [TS]

00:02:31   the work to make a new TV series and [TS]

00:02:33   they just scrapped it and instead they [TS]

00:02:36   made Star Trek the motion picture it [TS]

00:02:39   talk about amy was going to be moving [TS]

00:02:40   then it was gonna be a TV series that [TS]

00:02:42   was going to be a movie [TS]

00:02:44   what a mess fortunately the movie isn't [TS]

00:02:46   a mess at all [TS]

00:02:47   wait a second I don't wanna I don't want [TS]

00:02:51   to recap the entire plot because as as [TS]

00:02:53   suggested by and you wouldn't know it [TS]

00:02:56   but they're the plot is like 20 seconds [TS]

00:02:59   okay so here the slot closing price good [TS]

00:03:02   models you've got here's the plot a [TS]

00:03:04   cloud it that's really big and powerful [TS]

00:03:07   floats toward the earth the enterprise [TS]

00:03:10   which is just being refitted seems to be [TS]

00:03:12   the only ship that can go out and visit [TS]

00:03:14   the cloud they send the Enterprise Kirk [TS]

00:03:16   takes command even though he wasn't in [TS]

00:03:18   command they go and visit the cloud find [TS]

00:03:20   out that it is an earth probe trying to [TS]

00:03:23   radio home just like on that old star [TS]

00:03:25   trek episode The Changeling and it [TS]

00:03:28   absorbs a couple of members of the crew [TS]

00:03:30   and disappears the end [TS]

00:03:32   see see was that hard I i was just it [TS]

00:03:36   was fascinating to watch this tonight [TS]

00:03:37   because i was there were 35 minutes in [TS]

00:03:40   and I realized that and what we've just [TS]

00:03:42   seen over first 35 minutes would [TS]

00:03:44   uncovered a 10 seconds of captains law [TS]

00:03:47   makes loud has been seen approaching the [TS]

00:03:50   earth the enterprise on its way to find [TS]

00:03:53   out what it's about before kills [TS]

00:03:54   everybody i've taken command of the [TS]

00:03:56   enterprise even though I'm Admiral and [TS]

00:03:58   action interior bridge [TS]

00:04:00   you're a couple there were some couple [TS]

00:04:02   cool scenes i did--like i mean [TS]

00:04:03   interspersed in this very long movie [TS]

00:04:05   where like I did like the notion of this [TS]

00:04:08   kind of big electromagnetic thing of [TS]

00:04:10   like the special effect of the Klingon [TS]

00:04:11   ship being dissolved like it was hokey [TS]

00:04:13   but it was also a little different [TS]

00:04:15   there's a lot of you know until you know [TS]

00:04:17   what's going on [TS]

00:04:18   there's a nice sense of this the scope [TS]

00:04:21   of this thing it's 81 is a 68 use that's [TS]

00:04:25   awfully large land could have all been [TS]

00:04:27   handled with eight with a scrolling wall [TS]

00:04:31   of yellow text recently noticed that [TS]

00:04:33   little let's also acknowledge that they [TS]

00:04:35   had they replayed that entire scene only [TS]

00:04:38   with the with the with a federation ship [TS]

00:04:40   and the Federation outpost it's the [TS]

00:04:42   first try it was absolutely unnecessary [TS]

00:04:44   and then there's the whole set of the [TS]

00:04:46   they load up the first 45 minutes with [TS]

00:04:48   oh my god that the are the ship isn't [TS]

00:04:50   really ready to go out there's gonna be [TS]

00:04:51   so many malfunctions and effect but that [TS]

00:04:54   doesn't play into anything that happens [TS]

00:04:55   later so snow [TS]

00:04:56   that goes out and we'll never ever [TS]

00:04:58   getting back together [TS]

00:05:00   yeah why were they apart why did they [TS]

00:05:02   have to be apart [TS]

00:05:04   why were they in the movie there the [TS]

00:05:05   movies not about the band movies is uber [TS]

00:05:08   and process Khambhat up but they [TS]

00:05:10   actually I early show otherwise the [TS]

00:05:12   century 21 real estate agent can now [TS]

00:05:15   captain the enterprise and not Sulu well [TS]

00:05:17   as the I feel bad for Decker because he [TS]

00:05:20   said that this community have to wait [TS]

00:05:21   for pretty [TS]

00:05:22   hey he gets bumped down to science [TS]

00:05:24   officer although apparently that's a job [TS]

00:05:26   normally held by every Vulcan in the [TS]

00:05:28   world and then he gets science officer [TS]

00:05:30   taken away from him from a plant [TS]

00:05:32   standpoint he's very important but he's [TS]

00:05:35   really just there to carry sort of a [TS]

00:05:36   romantic subplot i propose that he is mo [TS]

00:05:39   yeah it's got the is but he did have two [TS]

00:05:42   jobs when he was bumped down he was the [TS]

00:05:44   executive officer and science off so [TS]

00:05:46   well because work is going to be soaring [TS]

00:05:49   backup Vulcan so I want everyone just a [TS]

00:05:52   moment the the Vulcan shot because that [TS]

00:05:54   was very weird the spot you know he's [TS]

00:05:57   been apparently in silent meditation for [TS]

00:05:59   two-and-a-half years to get some color [TS]

00:06:01   glass urging his emotions yeah and the [TS]

00:06:03   Vulcans a square together speaking [TS]

00:06:05   Finnish I was like I've never heard [TS]

00:06:06   Vulcan spouts oh-58 a whole field it's [TS]

00:06:10   like I i believe the story there is that [TS]

00:06:12   they just did all the dialogue in [TS]

00:06:13   English and they thought it would be [TS]

00:06:14   cooler if it sounded aliens so they kind [TS]

00:06:17   of overdubbed it but it's all in the [TS]

00:06:18   same things because they're overdubbing [TS]

00:06:20   the language the English with with fake [TS]

00:06:23   English and it sounds ridiculous and [TS]

00:06:25   that was well before Marco grand so [TS]

00:06:27   here's the here's a problem I i think [TS]

00:06:29   with the first part of this movie is is [TS]

00:06:30   it is i think Andy's write a lot of this [TS]

00:06:32   is unnecessary [TS]

00:06:34   it is very long and it's hard to see why [TS]

00:06:38   it's in the movie other than the fact [TS]

00:06:39   that they thought it would look cool or [TS]

00:06:41   be cool in some way and and you know [TS]

00:06:43   what this movie looks good and it sounds [TS]

00:06:46   good [TS]

00:06:46   the music is good music here are your [TS]

00:06:49   results that you're there you're going [TS]

00:06:51   to lose that [TS]

00:06:53   copy that I've got to waking up you're [TS]

00:06:56   breaking up I can't hear you scott doing [TS]

00:06:57   I really happy I understand that's the [TS]

00:07:01   Klingon sequence does not need to be [TS]

00:07:03   there but i love that sequence so much [TS]

00:07:06   because i enjoy those ships and you have [TS]

00:07:10   to think about this is the first time in [TS]

00:07:12   ten years people are seeing Star Trek [TS]

00:07:13   and while that was very disappointing [TS]

00:07:16   when they saw this movie because this [TS]

00:07:18   movie is not very good see those see [TS]

00:07:21   those Klingon Cruiser like oh my god its [TS]

00:07:23   star trek it's never looked this good [TS]

00:07:25   and then four and a half hours later as [TS]

00:07:27   the that sequence ends you think well [TS]

00:07:30   maybe they could speed can't wait to see [TS]

00:07:32   it's also false advertising is like I [TS]

00:07:33   can't wait to see what the Klingons are [TS]

00:07:35   up to in this week [TS]

00:07:36   well you'll never sell them on just [TS]

00:07:37   right there digitized but to work [TS]

00:07:40   yeah I mean it's like you you went to [TS]

00:07:42   all the trouble to come up with this [TS]

00:07:43   fancy complicated makeup to redo what [TS]

00:07:46   Klingons look like you've come up with [TS]

00:07:47   all the ships and the models and then we [TS]

00:07:49   never see them again and then the great [TS]

00:07:52   Cleon music yeah and and I get it it's [TS]

00:07:56   like okay we want to see the Klingon [TS]

00:07:57   bird-of-prey on a big screen [TS]

00:07:58   hey let's go to Vulcan as long as we're [TS]

00:08:00   going on the big screen let's see Vulcan [TS]

00:08:02   on the big screen but science statue [TS]

00:08:06   there standing under the strange and [TS]

00:08:08   Vulcan seems to be a hellscape because [TS]

00:08:10   the absolute success star trek for does [TS]

00:08:14   the opening of this movie better in [TS]

00:08:16   every respect you have ships you have [TS]

00:08:18   the ship's dying when the programs by [TS]

00:08:21   Vulcan looks better [TS]

00:08:23   it's it you know you don't need you we [TS]

00:08:25   don't need star trek one we have Star [TS]

00:08:27   Trek for you're also giving spacca of a [TS]

00:08:30   reason to actually have a have an arc [TS]

00:08:32   throughout the show you know instead of [TS]

00:08:34   a ok so that's a part of the supplies [TS]

00:08:36   going to be Spock's rediscovery of [TS]

00:08:38   himself [TS]

00:08:38   no they just needed to get his ass off [TS]

00:08:40   of Vulcan and onto the ship is the only [TS]

00:08:42   one of the universe who resonates with [TS]

00:08:44   this thing to it's never explained it's [TS]

00:08:46   a plot point it's just a horse [TS]

00:08:48   well it's right that the second answer [TS]

00:08:50   is this was written as the pilot for the [TS]

00:08:53   series they were gonna do [TS]

00:08:54   yeah and then they changed it without [TS]

00:08:57   really rethinking it as anything more [TS]

00:09:00   in this interesting story that would [TS]

00:09:01   have been fine as a 44-minute episode [TS]

00:09:04   and then they're like oh what's gonna [TS]

00:09:07   have more effect it's gotta be bigger [TS]

00:09:09   and and instead of actually you know [TS]

00:09:11   making a story that was big [TS]

00:09:14   they just added more shots of the ship [TS]

00:09:17   because the ship looks really good thing [TS]

00:09:20   because it looks bad conscience well i [TS]

00:09:22   think the Klingon ships look bad because [TS]

00:09:25   there clearly models they are in perfect [TS]

00:09:28   formation and they stay right there [TS]

00:09:31   yes I think it sounds bad sounds like [TS]

00:09:34   Star Wars not Star Trek wait what sounds [TS]

00:09:37   bad about the scenes in the movie that [TS]

00:09:40   the theme song specifically it starts [TS]

00:09:43   with this big bombastic Oh John Williams [TS]

00:09:46   sounding theme then you have a starscape [TS]

00:09:48   and it pans down to see starships yeah [TS]

00:09:53   that coming on the Klingon the Klingon [TS]

00:09:55   theme that's going on their gods and you [TS]

00:09:57   can see that it's certainly they're [TS]

00:09:58   moving information it felt very tron to [TS]

00:10:01   me almost that same way where it's all [TS]

00:10:02   locked together and not entirely and not [TS]

00:10:05   entirely right i think the enterprise [TS]

00:10:06   model is very nice and the stuff that [TS]

00:10:07   they do with that again it but endless [TS]

00:10:10   and I kept watching and thinking well [TS]

00:10:11   you know at least they reuse this [TS]

00:10:13   footage and star trek to and that's a [TS]

00:10:14   much better than Betty and it's kind of [TS]

00:10:16   long seen on star trek to but it's like [TS]

00:10:18   a fraction of the time they spend in [TS]

00:10:19   Star Trek the motion picture on the same [TS]

00:10:21   effect all agree with Monty on the music [TS]

00:10:23   I you know I'm glad jerry goldsmith got [TS]

00:10:27   paid [TS]

00:10:27   he does a very good chance that i have [TS]

00:10:29   never liked that theme which the baba [TS]

00:10:33   but that one of these and it's so yeah [TS]

00:10:36   next generation right they reused in [TS]

00:10:38   Star Trek The Next Generation it's funny [TS]

00:10:40   I couldn't remember because so familiar [TS]

00:10:42   i was like i just remembering this [TS]

00:10:43   wrongs and watch next generation for [TS]

00:10:45   some time but I i thought the music was [TS]

00:10:47   suppose it was great throughout was my [TS]

00:10:50   feeling i would often forget was on [TS]

00:10:52   screen actually listen to the [TS]

00:10:53   orchestration he did an incredible job [TS]

00:10:55   lots of different instruments some [TS]

00:10:57   experimental instruments he likes um I [TS]

00:11:00   think they were gonna say he's a big [TS]

00:11:01   turbo fan is back feeling because a lot [TS]

00:11:04   of like low rumbling stuff had on [TS]

00:11:06   noise-canceling headphones and wasn't [TS]

00:11:08   i'd love to get the soundtrack to this i [TS]

00:11:10   think it was so much better than the [TS]

00:11:11   movie The [TS]

00:11:12   actual sentence can be created yeah you [TS]

00:11:14   know you're exactly right Glenn the most [TS]

00:11:16   exciting thing about this movie's the [TS]

00:11:18   overture it's well I know you can't be [TS]

00:11:22   one less than I can't let this planet [TS]

00:11:24   north of the Klingon uniforms too i was [TS]

00:11:27   the only out i'm done grasping for [TS]

00:11:29   positive things to say they didn't come [TS]

00:11:30   up with that the Klingon uniforms which [TS]

00:11:32   is a really good uniform design that [TS]

00:11:34   actually was good enough that they could [TS]

00:11:35   use it for the entire series that was [TS]

00:11:37   great the sum of the uniforms [TS]

00:11:39   engineering also i was surprised also [TS]

00:11:41   that actually they just reuse the okay [TS]

00:11:42   that was good enough especially because [TS]

00:11:44   all of the other costumes here we're [TS]

00:11:46   just full skirts short sleeve uniform [TS]

00:11:49   but we got against pajamas and uh [TS]

00:11:51   jumpsuit [TS]

00:11:53   I never understood the whole very pale [TS]

00:11:57   like washed-out earth-tone silk pajamas [TS]

00:12:00   all I could think was that they used all [TS]

00:12:02   of the colors in the movie poster and [TS]

00:12:04   setup we don't have any more color [TS]

00:12:05   budget [TS]

00:12:06   see this is what happens when you don't [TS]

00:12:07   use your time at mood wisely you only [TS]

00:12:09   have 30 minutes if so in the first the [TS]

00:12:12   first third of this movie I thought if [TS]

00:12:15   you if you cut down a lot of the [TS]

00:12:18   unnecessary stuff because the fact is [TS]

00:12:20   there is a huge amount of I mean it is [TS]

00:12:22   you think when you're gonna watch it [TS]

00:12:24   again you think well you know I probably [TS]

00:12:26   overstated and then watching you don't [TS]

00:12:28   know I understated it there are minutes [TS]

00:12:31   were all there are special effects and [TS]

00:12:33   we were we were talking on that random [TS]

00:12:35   track episode Scott about Star Trek for [TS]

00:12:37   about how it starts with them want [TS]

00:12:39   everybody on in the movie watching star [TS]

00:12:41   trek 3 and then search for syria in this [TS]

00:12:43   literally at several points of watching [TS]

00:12:46   our characters watching the movie with [TS]

00:12:48   us using it's just so that goes on [TS]

00:12:51   forever but one of the things that I I [TS]

00:12:54   thought watching through this time is [TS]

00:12:56   there is a nugget of an interesting bit [TS]

00:12:58   of drama in the first act of this [TS]

00:13:00   because you have you have themes that [TS]

00:13:02   would be revisited in some cases in [TS]

00:13:05   other movies you've got Kirk wanting to [TS]

00:13:07   research command and there's the Kirk [TS]

00:13:09   Decker dynamic i think is kind of [TS]

00:13:11   interesting how McCoy who Kirk is kind [TS]

00:13:13   of brought on because he's trying to get [TS]

00:13:15   the band back together but McCoy [TS]

00:13:16   immediately calls Kirk on his BS and & [TS]

00:13:20   Decker knows what's what I think I think [TS]

00:13:22   that's an icy what they're doing there [TS]

00:13:24   and i think that was kind of interesting [TS]

00:13:26   but we'll see that's where I thought it [TS]

00:13:27   started to go off the rails for me well [TS]

00:13:29   okay go house where to go with that well [TS]

00:13:32   stop big because they established Decker [TS]

00:13:35   as the guys alright he's going to be [TS]

00:13:37   Kirk's executive officer is going to be [TS]

00:13:39   telling Kirk no we can't do that so Kurt [TS]

00:13:41   can show how manly he is but then they [TS]

00:13:44   bring McCoy on and that's McCoy's only [TS]

00:13:47   job is to call Curtis stuff it's not [TS]

00:13:49   like he has a lot of surgery to do in [TS]

00:13:51   the movie [TS]

00:13:52   yeah so before you know it McCoy is [TS]

00:13:54   doing all the things that Decker's [TS]

00:13:56   character ought to be doing a decorator [TS]

00:13:58   just standing around they're having a [TS]

00:13:59   chin [TS]

00:14:00   well i think i see I don't entirely [TS]

00:14:01   agree with that because although I [TS]

00:14:03   though although bones does do that the [TS]

00:14:05   whole idea here is the Kirk is not this [TS]

00:14:06   about not relinquishing things to the [TS]

00:14:08   next generation and he Decker knows more [TS]

00:14:11   about the ship and Kirk does and and [TS]

00:14:13   Kirk does not appreciate that other [TS]

00:14:14   people have you know like decorate he [TS]

00:14:17   has qualifications and I let what like i [TS]

00:14:19   was saying i think i see what they were [TS]

00:14:21   trying to do there [TS]

00:14:22   I do think that it it it all falls apart [TS]

00:14:25   fairly quickly but but i sat i SAT there [TS]

00:14:29   thinking you know I could see how [TS]

00:14:30   somebody could come in with this first [TS]

00:14:32   act and say I see where we can take this [TS]

00:14:35   to lead to some dramatic story choices [TS]

00:14:37   and arrest the movie [TS]

00:14:38   none of that happens meeting of it how I [TS]

00:14:42   want to point out something about [TS]

00:14:42   Decker's indexes competences remember [TS]

00:14:45   the scene when Kirk comes on board right [TS]

00:14:47   and he's it takes 40 minutes so you can [TS]

00:14:49   never forget how long it takes out their [TS]

00:14:50   body to do another loop around cuddy [TS]

00:14:53   this step just a slow it down Scotty [TS]

00:14:56   you're going too fast I want this to [TS]

00:14:57   take 10 minutes to get there Kirk [TS]

00:14:59   suffers from motion sickness [TS]

00:15:00   little-known fact is in engineering [TS]

00:15:02   Scotty is talking about the transporter [TS]

00:15:05   right & Decker's trying to fix something [TS]

00:15:06   he fixes the transporter system the next [TS]

00:15:11   time here on the transporter is when the [TS]

00:15:13   Vulcan and someone else are melted in [TS]

00:15:14   the transporter beam so I would question [TS]

00:15:16   his competency let me take a break to [TS]

00:18:00   can I can I also mentioned I mean we we [TS]

00:18:02   could list them all but like the the [TS]

00:18:04   transporter accident see that sword the [TS]

00:18:06   wormhole seen it the there are so many [TS]

00:18:09   scenes in this movie that you look at [TS]

00:18:10   you look why does that exist in the [TS]

00:18:12   world will see i guess exist to show [TS]

00:18:14   while Decker knew better but it's a [TS]

00:18:16   waste of time and it goes on for so long [TS]

00:18:18   the transporter accident it's a waste [TS]

00:18:21   it's a way don't because that's over you [TS]

00:18:23   to do to add that extra kick in the nuts [TS]

00:18:25   is not only is this movie going slowly [TS]

00:18:27   but through the wormhole saying let's [TS]

00:18:29   have everything happened just to just to [TS]

00:18:32   really lower the Occidental doorbell [TS]

00:18:35   rings I'm gonna go away it makes the [TS]

00:18:39   great man's right comparing the i'm [TS]

00:18:44   sorry i'll repeat that for use and [TS]

00:18:48   asteroid yeah we could see it's an [TS]

00:18:50   aspiration that god I think that [TS]

00:18:52   wormhole scene is there because star [TS]

00:18:54   wars had a very exciting going into [TS]

00:18:56   hyperspace scene so we need to make [TS]

00:18:59   three very exciting going to work drive [TS]

00:19:01   scene and then something has to happen [TS]

00:19:03   and then we can get on with our plot but [TS]

00:19:06   there's just yeah there's no reason so [TS]

00:19:08   not wagon train to the stars you know [TS]

00:19:10   this is so not Horatio Hornblower in [TS]

00:19:13   space they I i can see the eye can see a [TS]

00:19:16   bit of the logic in the studio saying [TS]

00:19:18   okay we want to make this movie because [TS]

00:19:20   Star Wars is big but we don't want to [TS]

00:19:23   just eight star wars so let's eight 2001 [TS]

00:19:26   or something let's go we have YS and all [TS]

00:19:28   the stuff but specifically the pacing of [TS]

00:19:30   5001 yes [TS]

00:19:32   oh well I thought that clicks into [TS]

00:19:33   something that I was really very aware [TS]

00:19:35   of it really seems like this is gene [TS]

00:19:38   roddenberry's attempt to say oh oh I [TS]

00:19:41   can't believe you thought that [TS]

00:19:42   piece-of-crap Star Wars was good [TS]

00:19:44   let me show you what a real science [TS]

00:19:46   fiction is about it's about every little [TS]

00:19:48   scientific detail and making sure we're [TS]

00:19:50   thinking about our feelings at every [TS]

00:19:53   point of the way don't worry I'll fix [TS]

00:19:55   every and phone and ate the evidence of [TS]

00:19:57   that is not only the movie itself but [TS]

00:19:59   the fact that Gene Roddenberry did the [TS]

00:20:02   exact same thing all over again with [TS]

00:20:05   next-generation Decker is Riker is [TS]

00:20:08   really is i Leah Jerry Goldsmith is [TS]

00:20:11   jerry goldsmith collecting checks for [TS]

00:20:15   things he wrote ten years ago we talked [TS]

00:20:17   about Roddenberry and i think i will be [TS]

00:20:19   talking about the latter third of this [TS]

00:20:21   movie doesn't the last 10 hours and [TS]

00:20:26   again I think the interior features [TS]

00:20:27   stuff is beautiful and i got to study it [TS]

00:20:29   in detail that goes for for a long time [TS]

00:20:32   it's locked going out in the suit by the [TS]

00:20:34   way another scene it's like why is that [TS]

00:20:35   even in there but but here's the thing [TS]

00:20:37   about that end of the movie that is the [TS]

00:20:39   worst kind of Gene Roddenberry story not [TS]

00:20:42   only is it creeping from the changeling [TS]

00:20:44   on the original Star Trek episode and [TS]

00:20:46   the end the Eilean subplot where they're [TS]

00:20:49   trying to teach the i Leah duplicate to [TS]

00:20:51   be sort of like to play her into being [TS]

00:20:54   human again is a knockoff of take your [TS]

00:20:57   pick the one with the kelvans or the one [TS]

00:21:00   with the though the water little girls [TS]

00:21:02   made of the episode that's like half of [TS]

00:21:04   Spock's scenes in the whole series yeah [TS]

00:21:06   so you jam that in there too but the [TS]

00:21:08   problem is that the end it becomes I [TS]

00:21:10   mean there is it's all the things that [TS]

00:21:12   you can complain about about gene [TS]

00:21:13   roddenberry's utopian vision and [TS]

00:21:15   believing that he's this amazing visit [TS]

00:21:16   visionary there's no conflict [TS]

00:21:18   there's the it's all about humanity [TS]

00:21:21   striving to better themselves in the end [TS]

00:21:23   people get glowy and things disappear [TS]

00:21:26   and that's the end of the blood he and [TS]

00:21:28   there's no villain there's if there's a [TS]

00:21:29   sense of wonder like he literally thinks [TS]

00:21:32   that that people will enjoy this movie [TS]

00:21:35   because they'll enjoy watching [TS]

00:21:37   characters they love watch special [TS]

00:21:39   effects and then that's a whole last [TS]

00:21:42   third of of the film it's like Field of [TS]

00:21:44   Dreams he the features wants to meet his [TS]

00:21:46   dad again and play catch ya well feature [TS]

00:21:48   was an actual character instead of just [TS]

00:21:50   being a set then that might have been [TS]

00:21:52   interesting to write but it was just [TS]

00:21:54   yeah yeah I don't think there and [TS]

00:21:56   explore the idea to like there's a [TS]

00:21:58   planet machine intelligences is a really [TS]

00:22:00   cool idea also explored in early episode [TS]

00:22:02   of futurama for a bot planet and I think [TS]

00:22:05   that although it did it much better have [TS]

00:22:06   to say silence [TS]

00:22:09   and anyway sorry but the people [TS]

00:22:12   understand futurama will get that but [TS]

00:22:13   the that's a very interesting idea but [TS]

00:22:15   it's told right it's not the show till [TS]

00:22:17   it's that old thing they're talking [TS]

00:22:19   about a planet machine intelligences we [TS]

00:22:21   don't even get like a scene like a a [TS]

00:22:24   cutaway it's all you're standing in [TS]

00:22:26   front of machinery and special effects [TS]

00:22:28   talking about things describing things [TS]

00:22:30   that are actually very interesting [TS]

00:22:31   conceptually if they were explored or [TS]

00:22:34   they could have been a tron they could [TS]

00:22:36   have done a you know an early matrix C [TS]

00:22:38   kind of thing and said we're going into [TS]

00:22:40   the mind of feature because we need to [TS]

00:22:41   teach it what humanity is anything [TS]

00:22:44   instead of they're like oh there's a [TS]

00:22:46   shorted wire i'll type in something very [TS]

00:22:48   quickly that you can't see so clearly [TS]

00:22:51   you don't even know what I just said [TS]

00:22:52   and then i will go into start us hello [TS]

00:22:55   and and well the whole plot of this film [TS]

00:22:56   is essentially the enterprise drives out [TS]

00:22:58   to see a cloud and the cloud [TS]

00:22:59   disappearance might have sex with humans [TS]

00:23:02   found on a cloud that second Decker [TS]

00:23:05   Decker quantum leap's let's not forget [TS]

00:23:07   this [TS]

00:23:07   sure he does yeah that's exactly it [TS]

00:23:09   hopes will because she's a teenager [TS]

00:23:11   preparing to go see The Beatles at the [TS]

00:23:12   end Sullivan Show but unfortunately she [TS]

00:23:15   left a pair curlers on it should burn [TS]

00:23:16   the house down and she left home and got [TS]

00:23:18   killed [TS]

00:23:18   so now Decker is going to be her for the [TS]

00:23:20   next two weeks see the beatles and save [TS]

00:23:22   her life either theory and who this [TS]

00:23:24   movie was made for i think was for the [TS]

00:23:26   model builders because of every science [TS]

00:23:30   fiction movie this movie gives you the [TS]

00:23:32   best look at every single spaceship like [TS]

00:23:35   if you're building an enterprise [TS]

00:23:37   this is the movie you want your visit [TS]

00:23:39   water tank down there too yeah every see [TS]

00:23:42   where it oh that's the office level huh [TS]

00:23:44   got office level that was my favorite [TS]

00:23:46   label and another level [TS]

00:23:47   exterior office league level label [TS]

00:23:50   outside of a star just goes you can see [TS]

00:23:53   because you get those duck boat tours of [TS]

00:23:55   the truck they want to sit the first [TS]

00:23:57   they want to see is the office level of [TS]

00:23:58   the enterprise oh my god that was great [TS]

00:24:00   monty monty out I'll do you one better [TS]

00:24:02   this is the same impulse that made the [TS]

00:24:05   Star Wars prequels they knew they went [TS]

00:24:09   they went into Star Trek and they like [TS]

00:24:12   it's been 10 years [TS]

00:24:13   let's do something special let's make [TS]

00:24:15   your big ship big models and and let's [TS]

00:24:18   see earth let's see what the human let's [TS]

00:24:21   see what the human [TS]

00:24:22   this is really like in the 23rd century [TS]

00:24:24   they get so deep into Star Trek universe [TS]

00:24:29   kinds of stuff they forget to tell a [TS]

00:24:32   story it it [TS]

00:24:34   this totally feels like a it's totally [TS]

00:24:37   feels like the George Lucas prequels and [TS]

00:24:40   it's it's it's people who love star trek [TS]

00:24:42   so much and don't get me wrong you know [TS]

00:24:44   after ten years there's a whole lot of [TS]

00:24:47   nostalgic power to seeing the band get [TS]

00:24:49   back together again but that's all this [TS]

00:24:51   is this is oh my god i love my star trek [TS]

00:24:55   so much i'm going to make a movie about [TS]

00:24:57   it [TS]

00:24:58   oh so it's fan Fitzpatrick for model [TS]

00:25:01   builders it's fanfic by robin i think it [TS]

00:25:04   I think chip you got you got something [TS]

00:25:05   where this is about the creator of the [TS]

00:25:08   property that was successful not [TS]

00:25:11   understanding why people liked it and [TS]

00:25:13   making decisions based on his sort of [TS]

00:25:16   blown up a ego about like I i have big [TS]

00:25:20   big ideas and big plans i'm going to in [TS]

00:25:23   Roddenberry's case talk about this [TS]

00:25:25   utopian view vision of humanity and also [TS]

00:25:29   sort of with a side of dirty old man sex [TS]

00:25:31   commentary and with Lucas it was all [TS]

00:25:34   about like digital sets in digital [TS]

00:25:36   extensions and and it's it's a movie for [TS]

00:25:38   kids but I'm bringing the entire medium [TS]

00:25:40   forward and in both cases these guys are [TS]

00:25:42   diluted and they create a piece of junk [TS]

00:25:44   because they don't actually understand [TS]

00:25:46   what it is they created and why people [TS]

00:25:47   responded to it i don't know if i recall [TS]

00:25:50   the Star Trek the motion picture a piece [TS]

00:25:51   of junk but I feel like it doesn't it [TS]

00:25:54   lays a lot of foundation for what the [TS]

00:25:56   other better movies do and also i think [TS]

00:25:59   they're still there's not a lot of it [TS]

00:26:01   but there's still that great interaction [TS]

00:26:04   between you know the holy trinity [TS]

00:26:05   trinity of Star Trek McCoy Spock and [TS]

00:26:09   Kirk when they get together it's still [TS]

00:26:11   good but there's not a whole lot of it [TS]

00:26:13   there's a lot of them looking at things [TS]

00:26:15   together i was i was surprised by how [TS]

00:26:18   much of this movie actually does last [TS]

00:26:20   four years the sets last pretty much [TS]

00:26:23   through Star Trek for the security [TS]

00:26:26   uniforms [TS]

00:26:27   you even said that security universal [TS]

00:26:29   drinks yes that's because they're cheap [TS]

00:26:31   skates not because they didn't let alone [TS]

00:26:33   yesterday one of the reasons star trek [TS]

00:26:35   to I mean as a fantasy [TS]

00:26:36   track two I looked at this noticed all [TS]

00:26:38   the things that they resist or two and [TS]

00:26:39   one of the reasons star trek to was able [TS]

00:26:41   to be made on the budget that it was and [TS]

00:26:43   look as good as it does is because they [TS]

00:26:44   got to reuse a lot of stuff that they [TS]

00:26:46   paid for Star Trek the motion picture [TS]

00:26:47   but real quick uh let me let me finish [TS]

00:26:49   the list you know wrist communicator [TS]

00:26:51   capital use one of those risks correct [TS]

00:26:53   communities in Star Trek to the Klingon [TS]

00:26:55   designs the Vulcan designs and they last [TS]

00:26:58   for forever [TS]

00:27:00   Spock's emotional development are the [TS]

00:27:04   spa QC in star trek to is clearly the [TS]

00:27:07   spot who went through all this stuff in [TS]

00:27:09   Star Trek one it's like the only thing [TS]

00:27:10   that was thrown away with the pajamas [TS]

00:27:13   yeah I don't know about their but i [TS]

00:27:15   think i think that's it that's an idea [TS]

00:27:17   of a of a of a plot thread that they had [TS]

00:27:20   on the on the corkboard that they forgot [TS]

00:27:22   to pick up i think that it's it's easy [TS]

00:27:25   to forget it you can you can you can [TS]

00:27:27   drop into Star Trek to without having [TS]

00:27:28   seen Star Trek one and think it's one of [TS]

00:27:31   the greatest moves you've ever seen i do [TS]

00:27:32   think it's a great movie i think part of [TS]

00:27:33   it is that it's almost as if it's almost [TS]

00:27:35   as if they had they cast Montalban [TS]

00:27:37   specifically because they realize [TS]

00:27:39   exactly how little energy there wasn't [TS]

00:27:41   the first one [TS]

00:27:42   yeah i think if they put this i'm being [TS]

00:27:43   completely serious here that if I think [TS]

00:27:45   that if they put this big huge bright [TS]

00:27:47   Sun in the middle of this story [TS]

00:27:49   everybody's going to be thrown around [TS]

00:27:51   its orbit and its heat and it's like [TS]

00:27:53   that's why these two are as far as [TS]

00:27:55   different as night and day so I i think [TS]

00:27:57   that Spock is just another failed [TS]

00:27:59   subplot in Star Trek one star trek to [TS]

00:28:01   they have this entire thing from start [TS]

00:28:03   to finish about how look we are a crew [TS]

00:28:06   of like X hundreds of people and one [TS]

00:28:08   person might have to sacrifice for [TS]

00:28:10   everybody that and there's sometimes [TS]

00:28:11   where as much as you would with all [TS]

00:28:13   opening scene as in star trek to you [TS]

00:28:15   might want to hopefully be able to save [TS]

00:28:17   everybody [TS]

00:28:18   I'm telling you there are situations [TS]

00:28:19   where that's not possible so you just [TS]

00:28:21   have to make the best decision there is [TS]

00:28:22   there's no that through line of a story [TS]

00:28:24   in the first movie [TS]

00:28:26   no I like I like what they try to do [TS]

00:28:28   with Spock the idea there is Spock's [TS]

00:28:30   finally decided what he's going to do [TS]

00:28:31   with his life which is going to purchase [TS]

00:28:32   emotions and really be a Vulcan and and [TS]

00:28:35   then he needs a feature and feature is [TS]

00:28:36   completely emotionless and that's why [TS]

00:28:39   they can't communicate with it it is a [TS]

00:28:41   way it is seen the entire universe and [TS]

00:28:43   doesn't understand it because it has no [TS]

00:28:44   you know he'd have no humanity and Spock [TS]

00:28:48   realizes that this is his great [TS]

00:28:50   mistake is that he needs to not purchase [TS]

00:28:51   humanity but embrace it [TS]

00:28:53   ok on paper that sounds good the movie [TS]

00:28:55   doesn't really earn it and you're right [TS]

00:28:56   Andy you could not see this movie and [TS]

00:28:58   c-spot and star trek to and B hey its [TS]

00:29:00   box and not you know it's not he's going [TS]

00:29:02   to change character in star trek to but [TS]

00:29:04   i like the idea of of that story arc I [TS]

00:29:07   just don't think it's earned because [TS]

00:29:08   very little is also i wanted to mention [TS]

00:29:10   Kirk is so passive in this movie most of [TS]

00:29:12   the time and that's another reason when [TS]

00:29:14   you look at Martha bono legal give Kirk [TS]

00:29:16   an enemy in somebody to play off of [TS]

00:29:18   because in this movie like his biggest [TS]

00:29:20   moves that he makes for things like [TS]

00:29:22   belaying orders from Decker like no it's [TS]

00:29:25   not radio for help or no lets things [TS]

00:29:27   like ordering them not to do things is [TS]

00:29:30   like Kirk is most active which is no [TS]

00:29:32   good [TS]

00:29:33   it's believable to have Kirk you know [TS]

00:29:35   trying to recapture his glory he was [TS]

00:29:37   been benched for two-and-a-half years [TS]

00:29:39   it's believable for him to try to get [TS]

00:29:42   things back and for him not to be firing [TS]

00:29:45   on all cylinders yet but it's not it's [TS]

00:29:47   not good storytelling is not interested [TS]

00:29:50   yeah it if thats that's where you end [TS]

00:29:52   you know like the midpoint that's the [TS]

00:29:56   midpoint of the thing is where he makes [TS]

00:29:57   that shift to being the Kirk we we know [TS]

00:29:59   and love but it's he's like that for the [TS]

00:30:01   home yeah i want to point out the spark [TS]

00:30:03   thing that I think they did very well [TS]

00:30:04   it's in passing but happens a few times [TS]

00:30:07   I'd forgotten it was in the movie is you [TS]

00:30:09   know he's ostensibly purchases emotions [TS]

00:30:11   he's been in meditation he's been [TS]

00:30:13   disappointed but it's not supposed to [TS]

00:30:14   experience emotions when he comes aboard [TS]

00:30:16   and he's absolutely stone-faced everyone [TS]

00:30:20   yeah and there we actually thought that [TS]

00:30:21   was actually he seemed alien he doesn't [TS]

00:30:24   seem you know the way he's dressed the [TS]

00:30:25   way he carries himself he's just [TS]

00:30:27   completely absent from them and they're [TS]

00:30:29   all getting kind of increasingly pissed [TS]

00:30:30   off and trying to cope with that and I [TS]

00:30:33   actually thought that was legitimate [TS]

00:30:34   because that was an old camaraderie is [TS]

00:30:36   gone [TS]

00:30:36   he's not the person they knew their [TS]

00:30:38   trying to roll with the fact that you [TS]

00:30:39   know this is we maybe now but if that's [TS]

00:30:42   what they're all so excited everyone [TS]

00:30:44   says Sulu and check everyone stands up [TS]

00:30:46   and and mr. Jacques magical barrier you [TS]

00:30:49   mean she had like one speaking right but [TS]

00:30:52   she had that plot in the series where [TS]

00:30:53   she wasn't sort of in love with him in [TS]

00:30:55   the original series right and she's [TS]

00:30:56   there is just like turns around walks [TS]

00:30:58   and that that was actually a defective [TS]

00:31:00   emotional bit and by the way this is his [TS]

00:31:03   shuttle docking [TS]

00:31:03   is another one of those scenes that is [TS]

00:31:05   endless and has no reason to be in a [TS]

00:31:07   movie it's a long-range shuttle it's [TS]

00:31:09   probably a career it's really cool to [TS]

00:31:11   see it doc it's gotta work hard and he [TS]

00:31:13   attaches from the warp sweat and comes [TS]

00:31:15   in an attachment so very cool asleep in [TS]

00:31:17   the park doesn't remember it flips over [TS]

00:31:19   its various i almost want that model i [TS]

00:31:22   get Tom servo maybe this is a [TS]

00:31:24   documentary on how to dock a [TS]

00:31:25   shuttlecraft like a starship Jerry [TS]

00:31:29   Goldsmith has convinced this is the most [TS]

00:31:31   exciting see that not every scene is the [TS]

00:31:33   most exciting see now the reason jerry [TS]

00:31:35   goldsmith thinks everything is exciting [TS]

00:31:37   is because he was writing it without the [TS]

00:31:38   footage [TS]

00:31:39   yeah great the medium is having his head [TS]

00:31:41   was going is the schools with good [TS]

00:31:44   headcanon so there's a director's [TS]

00:31:46   edition of this which I owned by i was [TS]

00:31:48   actually um i'm robert wise says [TS]

00:31:50   apparently they they ran out of time to [TS]

00:31:52   edit this movie because it did it did [TS]

00:31:54   come down to the end and they were [TS]

00:31:55   cutting it not only were they were they [TS]

00:31:57   were rewriting it while they were [TS]

00:31:58   shooting which is never a good sign but [TS]

00:32:00   they were editing it up until the [TS]

00:32:01   drop-dead the director's edition is [TS]

00:32:03   better pace i wouldn't say it's fast [TS]

00:32:05   enough paste I feel like there must be a [TS]

00:32:07   really good fan edit out of there out of [TS]

00:32:09   this movie that is better but it's [TS]

00:32:11   better person and it's got some nicer [TS]

00:32:13   things in it and it's got some someone [TS]

00:32:15   pushing that two times fast forward but [TS]

00:32:17   yeah well you know i just i would be [TS]

00:32:19   kind of interested to see how you could [TS]

00:32:20   artfully cut this movie down by an hour [TS]

00:32:23   easily but anyway the director's edition [TS]

00:32:25   i will say I i think it's a better [TS]

00:32:27   addition I think it's got some nice [TS]

00:32:29   things it makes it sinks Vulcan up [TS]

00:32:31   Vulcan looks a little bit like a son [TS]

00:32:33   blasted hellscape and a little more like [TS]

00:32:34   Vulcan as we've seen in other things [TS]

00:32:37   it's ok but you know there's only so [TS]

00:32:39   much that anyone can do with this [TS]

00:32:41   because i have any of you seen the [TS]

00:32:42   special longer version [TS]

00:32:45   yes no there's one the yes there is one [TS]

00:32:48   version right it was it was good to fill [TS]

00:32:51   the three hours slot [TS]

00:32:52   yeah they said they'd say so they make [TS]

00:32:54   it made it longer for television so [TS]

00:32:56   there's even more staring out at port [TS]

00:32:59   holes but there are also some of the [TS]

00:33:01   character bits that aren't even in the [TS]

00:33:03   director's cut their kind of nice [TS]

00:33:05   Sulu making a fool of himself in front [TS]

00:33:07   of i Leah because she's she's she's a [TS]

00:33:10   sexy delton yeah some more some more [TS]

00:33:14   banter between Kirk and Spock and McCoy [TS]

00:33:16   where the human moments that were left [TS]

00:33:19   on the cutting room floor because you [TS]

00:33:21   know we've got to be more 2001 hey so I [TS]

00:33:24   got it I got a issue here about i Leah [TS]

00:33:27   and the nation nature of consciousness [TS]

00:33:28   where this movie is ostensibly one of [TS]

00:33:31   the things is exploring is what the [TS]

00:33:33   nature of consciousness is it just [TS]

00:33:35   doesn't very badly then within the movie [TS]

00:33:37   they take a character they destroy her [TS]

00:33:39   and create a duplicate which were then [TS]

00:33:41   supposed to I guess people are not [TS]

00:33:43   suitably horrified by the android that [TS]

00:33:46   appears i mean it's it's so emotionless [TS]

00:33:49   second-stringers more upset that he's [TS]

00:33:51   been ordered by Kirk to go follow her [TS]

00:33:52   around yeah and she's dead she's a tiger [TS]

00:33:54   and this is red simulator was in love [TS]

00:33:56   they were lovers [TS]

00:33:58   yeah and that she should disintegrate in [TS]

00:34:00   front of Decker and he shows no sign he [TS]

00:34:03   said he's like slightly slightly put out [TS]

00:34:05   there then her her destructor send a [TS]

00:34:08   probe that looks exactly like her and [TS]

00:34:10   has access to all of her memories to [TS]

00:34:12   examine them and he is more upset about [TS]

00:34:16   is being ordered around by Kirk then he [TS]

00:34:19   is you know sort of disgusted and [TS]

00:34:21   infuriated by this you know simulacrum [TS]

00:34:25   of his former lover that's in front of [TS]

00:34:27   them it is baffling well this is the [TS]

00:34:29   fundamental scientific theme is what is [TS]

00:34:31   consciousness when you take someone's [TS]

00:34:32   memories you stick another body the [TS]

00:34:34   transporter you know what's happening [TS]

00:34:36   with someone's transporter they killed [TS]

00:34:37   and reassembled the notion of where the [TS]

00:34:39   Solarize these are all fundamental [TS]

00:34:41   science fiction concepts and they're [TS]

00:34:42   like well she's disintegrated and [TS]

00:34:44   there's a new one who's entirely [TS]

00:34:46   nanoscopic she sweats just like the old [TS]

00:34:49   one so whatever she breaks just regular [TS]

00:34:51   a little bit there you got the theme of [TS]

00:34:54   this movie is stated when I'll ESS the [TS]

00:34:56   words recreation and enjoy have no [TS]

00:34:58   meaning to my programming or to any [TS]

00:35:02   viewer of this movie [TS]

00:35:03   oh my part of the reason this is so [TS]

00:35:05   unpleasant is because everyone in the [TS]

00:35:08   movie is uncomfortable all of the [TS]

00:35:10   characters are comfortable with others [TS]

00:35:12   yeah well that too polyester doesn't [TS]

00:35:14   breathe [TS]

00:35:15   I think Scotty's ok Scotty's okay [TS]

00:35:17   they're out of sorts with each other [TS]

00:35:19   I'm coming out the length of her shorty [TS]

00:35:21   robe i keep getting nervous about it [TS]

00:35:22   means having a spa day that's what I [TS]

00:35:24   thought [TS]

00:35:24   the top of your robe I don't like [TS]

00:35:25   because without getting into too many [TS]

00:35:28   details the the color and her bald head [TS]

00:35:33   butt from the back is certain [TS]

00:35:36   uncomfortably anatomical effect i'm sure [TS]

00:35:40   Jean I'm sure he appreciated that [TS]

00:35:43   because but it was cool about it in the [TS]

00:35:46   future man it's all cool in the future [TS]

00:35:47   man we all just wear a jumpsuit that's [TS]

00:35:49   fine [TS]

00:35:49   well you know they use this as raw [TS]

00:35:52   material for better movies to come [TS]

00:35:54   what and that's that's the reason the [TS]

00:35:55   original show worked is because they all [TS]

00:35:58   worked together in this one they're all [TS]

00:35:59   just not we're getting together and [TS]

00:36:02   they're arguing [TS]

00:36:03   well at least the human adventure is [TS]

00:36:06   just beginning all right I've had enough [TS]

00:36:09   of starting and I make it up to her 80s [TS]

00:36:12   final final thoughts Monty yes one I [TS]

00:36:16   really like that moment when Kirk first [TS]

00:36:18   gets on the enterprise and the incident [TS]

00:36:20   is going to show him to the bridge and [TS]

00:36:21   Kirk says I think I know how to do it [TS]

00:36:24   hi the answer is walk five feet into an [TS]

00:36:26   elevator it's a bridge and in JJ Abrams [TS]

00:36:31   defense [TS]

00:36:32   there's a lot of lens flare in this [TS]

00:36:33   movie now yeah yeah and a lot of weight [TS]

00:36:36   sets to yeah you know I think there's [TS]

00:36:41   some actually some some costumes in the [TS]

00:36:43   JJ Abrams Star Trek that are [TS]

00:36:44   intentionally echoing the pajamas 20 [TS]

00:36:49   because how could you not all right [TS]

00:36:51   let's move on 10 years into the future [TS]

00:36:53   to star trek five colon the final [TS]

00:36:57   frontier of the backslash html5 Nicholas [TS]

00:37:06   gone 40 for the entertainment server [TS]

00:37:09   which was the most generic name possible [TS]

00:37:11   the motion picture or the final frontier [TS]

00:37:13   I don't know it's time I know frontier [TS]

00:37:15   and close i have the the blu-ray of this [TS]

00:37:19   because it came with the other better [TS]

00:37:20   movies and it has a little documentary [TS]

00:37:23   about the making like you know people [TS]

00:37:26   talk about the screenwriter and William [TS]

00:37:27   Shatner and have been at all talking [TS]

00:37:29   about it and it's a fascinating [TS]

00:37:31   documentary to watch because they're all [TS]

00:37:33   talking about this horrible movie that [TS]

00:37:35   was [TS]

00:37:35   not very good and there are many like [TS]

00:37:39   Harvin it was like I was not gonna I [TS]

00:37:41   didn't want to be part of this William [TS]

00:37:43   Shatner talk me into its they all said [TS]

00:37:46   that they call this movie bills turn [TS]

00:37:49   because he was contractually he only did [TS]

00:37:51   Star Trek for because he was going to [TS]

00:37:53   direct star trek five and if he didn't [TS]

00:37:55   he was going to do the movie anymore and [TS]

00:37:58   the screenwriter was like you know we [TS]

00:38:00   have the scene where we need to distract [TS]

00:38:02   some people so I jokingly said why don't [TS]

00:38:05   we have a whore do a dance and everyone [TS]

00:38:07   in the room said that's a great idea and [TS]

00:38:08   he was like no let's not do that now i [TS]

00:38:09   know we're putting in the movie yeah be [TS]

00:38:12   careful what you guys think you got you [TS]

00:38:14   can't you can't help but notice that the [TS]

00:38:15   first 20 or 30 minutes of Star Trek 5 [TS]

00:38:17   has a lot of people telling her how [TS]

00:38:19   awesome they are hayas you know no I'm [TS]

00:38:22   sorry bill but we do i need Kirk here [TS]

00:38:25   for this mission [TS]

00:38:26   the first 20 minutes for my favorite [TS]

00:38:28   part because unlike the other star trek [TS]

00:38:30   movie i just watched it and people [TS]

00:38:32   sitting around having fun and go [TS]

00:38:35   straight there was hardly any Kirk Spock [TS]

00:38:36   McCoy better in the first movie and this [TS]

00:38:38   movie looks like there's going to be all [TS]

00:38:40   Kirk Spock McCoy better which not great [TS]

00:38:43   but would've been a place like something [TS]

00:38:44   there there at opposite ends of the bell [TS]

00:38:46   curve there [TS]

00:38:47   yeah yeah i agree i think because I look [TS]

00:38:49   at the first half hour of this movie and [TS]

00:38:51   I think it is the most spectacularly [TS]

00:38:53   self-indulgent that piece of garbage [TS]

00:38:56   look at the whole thing that well the [TS]

00:38:57   entire day with this is having honestly [TS]

00:38:59   if I had one word to describe star trek [TS]

00:39:01   5i thought perhaps I'd only seen it once [TS]

00:39:03   in them in the theater in 1989 [TS]

00:39:05   yeah and I'm a Star Trek fan I just [TS]

00:39:07   never need to revisit i revisited [TS]

00:39:09   finally in the last week for this if I [TS]

00:39:10   had to review it with one word it would [TS]

00:39:12   be garbage [TS]

00:39:14   it is a piece of garbage but it is [TS]

00:39:16   terrible on so many levels I I didn't [TS]

00:39:19   realize how bad it was [TS]

00:39:20   but the beginning really offends me [TS]

00:39:22   because I feel like it's PIAA again it's [TS]

00:39:25   just completely self-indulgent well Kirk [TS]

00:39:27   Spock and McCoy a great having you know [TS]

00:39:29   jet boots and away muttering to himself [TS]

00:39:33   in Yosemite and did we really need to [TS]

00:39:35   see star trek five the camping trip but [TS]

00:39:37   that's what we see here and there's that [TS]

00:39:40   whole like the nimbus thing at the [TS]

00:39:41   beginning which is kind of ridiculous [TS]

00:39:43   and and miss uses a lot of interesting [TS]

00:39:46   actors or at least David Warner [TS]

00:39:48   I know I feel like that's the word David [TS]

00:39:50   Warner I know I love him so much in this [TS]

00:39:53   film up and and and learns like Lawrence [TS]

00:39:56   luck bill i think is terrible in this is [TS]

00:39:58   it is not i mean i know they wanted I [TS]

00:40:01   guess Sean Connery for it but who surely [TS]

00:40:03   there was a better suited actor to play [TS]

00:40:06   a Vulcan cult leader than Lawrence luck [TS]

00:40:09   and Bill who is just this kind of genial [TS]

00:40:11   guy it's just it's baffling it's [TS]

00:40:14   baffling to me he is a contrast I mean [TS]

00:40:17   he's supposed to be a jovial Vulcan so [TS]

00:40:19   true and in the documentary Harv Bennett [TS]

00:40:22   said this is gonna be a great scene [TS]

00:40:24   we're going to show of Vulcan and then [TS]

00:40:25   he's going to laugh at people are going [TS]

00:40:26   to lose their minds and there's an [TS]

00:40:28   awkward pause and he says next time like [TS]

00:40:33   i got i can see so many things in this [TS]

00:40:35   movie working in West they were thinking [TS]

00:40:39   about him and that's one of them and [TS]

00:40:40   that's like yeah that's kind of an [TS]

00:40:42   interesting idea [TS]

00:40:43   it's not done very well nothing in this [TS]

00:40:45   film is done very well yeah I wouldn't [TS]

00:40:47   say this is a good movie but I certainly [TS]

00:40:49   found it more entertaining than the [TS]

00:40:51   other movie just because they said [TS]

00:40:52   things happening on the screen or any [TS]

00:40:54   gentleman who have steak but it was just [TS]

00:40:55   moving rapidly in front of your eyes I [TS]

00:40:57   will grant you that money let me [TS]

00:40:59   summarize the plot of this one by the [TS]

00:41:00   way [TS]

00:41:01   Kirk and Spock McCoy and the rest of the [TS]

00:41:03   crew of the enterprise are on a camping [TS]

00:41:04   trip and they're called back to the [TS]

00:41:06   enterprise because again for reasons [TS]

00:41:08   unknown they're the only ship that can [TS]

00:41:10   go and deal with this diplomatic problem [TS]

00:41:13   where there are hostages at a base in [TS]

00:41:15   the neutral zone when they get there the [TS]

00:41:17   enterprise is taken over by the hostile [TS]

00:41:21   force of people who kidnapped led by a [TS]

00:41:23   Vulcan who apparently is box [TS]

00:41:25   half-brother and the they take the [TS]

00:41:28   enterprise to the center of the galaxy [TS]

00:41:29   through the great barrier which is not [TS]

00:41:32   the same great barrier on the outside of [TS]

00:41:33   the galaxy because this one is [TS]

00:41:34   apparently on the inside the galaxy star [TS]

00:41:36   trek moment there it's not they find a [TS]

00:41:38   planet there's a big head [TS]

00:41:40   it says it's God Kirk says but wait a [TS]

00:41:42   second why you what you need a ride on [TS]

00:41:45   our spaceship if your God and then I [TS]

00:41:47   wrong they run around a little bit and [TS]

00:41:50   apparently God blows up with a photon [TS]

00:41:54   torpedo also there are some comedy also [TS]

00:41:57   i should say in the other side plot [TS]

00:41:59   there are seeing some comic relief [TS]

00:42:01   bonds with the worst Klingon makeup you [TS]

00:42:03   will ever see and they the at the end [TS]

00:42:06   the Klingon ambassador makes them [TS]

00:42:08   apologize that Star Trek five and then [TS]

00:42:11   there's a cocktail party I was expecting [TS]

00:42:13   that like I was like apologize now [TS]

00:42:15   commit ritual suicide in front of [TS]

00:42:17   everybody [TS]

00:42:18   okay you can't forget the cocktail party [TS]

00:42:21   where they all high-five about how great [TS]

00:42:22   they are now that's true that the end of [TS]

00:42:24   movie it does i'm surprised that they [TS]

00:42:25   all didn't tell a joke and laugh [TS]

00:42:27   together I was betrayed by their father [TS]

00:42:30   misuse of the word marshmallow and then [TS]

00:42:32   I had to read the back story i was even [TS]

00:42:33   more upset about it there's backstory [TS]

00:42:35   yes [TS]

00:42:35   oh you mean yes with the marshmallow not [TS]

00:42:38   futuristic marshmallow dispenser [TS]

00:42:40   yeah and it says marsh melanie has in [TS]

00:42:42   the novelization know he has manipulated [TS]

00:42:45   the memory banks spot learns I like shut [TS]

00:42:48   up [TS]

00:42:48   yeah bill mhm it was a joke that didn't [TS]

00:42:51   land we're okay with that i will sit [TS]

00:42:54   there are two things i did like about [TS]

00:42:55   Star Trek five number one after the [TS]

00:42:58   previous three or four movies that [TS]

00:42:59   looked so horribly like not just a TV [TS]

00:43:03   show but like this though when the last [TS]

00:43:07   three episodes of the third to the last [TS]

00:43:08   episode in the shooting schedule where [TS]

00:43:10   they've run out of money and they need [TS]

00:43:12   to save all the money for like the [TS]

00:43:13   two-part season finale and so there's [TS]

00:43:15   just no money to make anything look okay [TS]

00:43:17   ever so there are parts of it that [TS]

00:43:18   actually look like an actual movie and I [TS]

00:43:21   also like the one there's one actually [TS]

00:43:23   really good thread that they've managed [TS]

00:43:25   to put through most of the movies and [TS]

00:43:27   that is the fact that these guys is [TS]

00:43:29   getting old they get older they don't [TS]

00:43:31   like getting old that don't like the [TS]

00:43:33   fact that they're not really in touch [TS]

00:43:34   and they're no longer the a prime crew [TS]

00:43:36   anymore and so as a result Starfleet for [TS]

00:43:39   them becomes just these three or four [TS]

00:43:41   people that they've grown to know and [TS]

00:43:43   love [TS]

00:43:43   so I i'm willing to give them a bit of a [TS]

00:43:45   mulligan on the sitting around the [TS]

00:43:47   campfire bits and then the beans and [TS]

00:43:49   bourbon jokes in the marshmallow and [TS]

00:43:51   stuff other than that the fact that I [TS]

00:43:56   used to have my bike locked up with [TS]

00:43:57   Windows kryptonite locks you can open [TS]

00:43:59   without with a pic with a big pen I [TS]

00:44:01   didn't know the enterprise cuz was easy [TS]

00:44:03   to steal and that that was that 10,000 [TS]

00:44:06   not a good idea [TS]

00:44:07   well especially after structu when we [TS]

00:44:09   discover all the locks and things they [TS]

00:44:10   got you're like wait we already know [TS]

00:44:11   five-digit code [TS]

00:44:13   we should go to execute a couple hours [TS]

00:44:16   to go through all those combinations [TS]

00:44:18   what did you know eight you read about [TS]

00:44:19   how Shatner had this grand plan and you [TS]

00:44:23   know okay there's the Writers Guild [TS]

00:44:24   strike then there was the the special [TS]

00:44:26   effects that didn't that didn't work in [TS]

00:44:28   ilm gave them sort of like the the [TS]

00:44:31   cast-off special effects and hundred and [TS]

00:44:33   ten degree weather drink some of the [TS]

00:44:35   shooting and and an ego [TS]

00:44:37   alright alright bad things happen fine [TS]

00:44:40   but you know and and there is there is [TS]

00:44:42   like the kernel of an interesting idea [TS]

00:44:44   again you know it's like there's [TS]

00:44:45   something philosophical there's [TS]

00:44:47   something very trick to the concept of [TS]

00:44:50   it but it's also badly done and it'sit's [TS]

00:44:53   shatter being self-indulgent for the [TS]

00:44:55   whole thing of course there's something [TS]

00:44:56   track about it they're always meeting [TS]

00:44:58   space gods yes it is in fact when people [TS]

00:45:01   say when people negatively review a star [TS]

00:45:03   trek movie because they say it doesn't [TS]

00:45:04   really fit into the ideals of the [TS]

00:45:07   television series i point out that the [TS]

00:45:09   two worst Star Trek movies arguably are [TS]

00:45:12   the ones that are most closely aligned [TS]

00:45:14   to the ideals of Star Trek series and [TS]

00:45:17   that started the motion picture and star [TS]

00:45:18   trek five where nothing much happens and [TS]

00:45:21   it's kind of dumb because there's just a [TS]

00:45:22   space God or cloud at the end because [TS]

00:45:24   the the thing that kills me about it is [TS]

00:45:26   you you read about how Shatner fought to [TS]

00:45:29   keep everything in and and they had to [TS]

00:45:31   you know Harv gonna cut it down and they [TS]

00:45:33   had to recut it because chatter wanted [TS]

00:45:35   more stuff and watching this and [TS]

00:45:37   thinking and and he needed all these [TS]

00:45:39   effects right so what are all these [TS]

00:45:41   effects well he's got all these [TS]

00:45:43   shuttlecrafts flying around because [TS]

00:45:45   transporter doesn't work [TS]

00:45:47   oh no and then they're looking at things [TS]

00:45:50   through the view screen and the window [TS]

00:45:51   in the shuttlecraft and they're doing [TS]

00:45:53   all these things if you had just left [TS]

00:45:55   the transporter alone your story would [TS]

00:45:57   have been sharper and you have been able [TS]

00:45:59   to cut like all of these special effects [TS]

00:46:01   you have had this like stock effect that [TS]

00:46:03   was easy to do that they did all the [TS]

00:46:04   time and you could've actually like made [TS]

00:46:08   more story this for a short film this [TS]

00:46:11   has a lot of dead time of them just [TS]

00:46:14   sitting in the shuttlecrafts flying [TS]

00:46:16   again and it's just it's Star Trek the [TS]

00:46:18   motion picture done not as well [TS]

00:46:21   well I wonder if this was more of an [TS]

00:46:22   inspiration for galaxy quest then more [TS]

00:46:24   than some of the other movies and TV [TS]

00:46:26   show [TS]

00:46:26   a couple scenes in here was like this is [TS]

00:46:28   a shot-for-shot a galaxy quest moment [TS]

00:46:31   and that sort of tone the bombastic mess [TS]

00:46:34   of it and that self-importance even Curt [TS]

00:46:36   mean both him directing the film but [TS]

00:46:39   also the way his characters played in [TS]

00:46:40   the movie both were very much [TS]

00:46:42   i I don't know I because i haven't seen [TS]

00:46:44   for a long time like JC don't know four [TS]

00:46:46   seasons was in the theater maybe once [TS]

00:46:48   and I saw it just snapped into into that [TS]

00:46:51   parody mode i had never seen it but I [TS]

00:46:54   had seen Star Trek the motion picture [TS]

00:46:56   when it came out and not since and I'd [TS]

00:46:59   never seen this and back-to-back I liked [TS]

00:47:02   this more just because something was [TS]

00:47:03   happening [TS]

00:47:04   mhm i will agree that something happens [TS]

00:47:06   I do i do agree i'm not gonna I'm not [TS]

00:47:09   gonna refuse that there there there is [TS]

00:47:11   motion on the screen a whole lot more [TS]

00:47:13   I mean to be fair my notes and right [TS]

00:47:16   after the camping trip and pick up at [TS]

00:47:18   the end of saying what is with this [TS]

00:47:20   cocktail party [TS]

00:47:21   yeah didn't matter but I have a lot of [TS]

00:47:22   notes on the camera i hate i hate the [TS]

00:47:25   the side-box stuff a lot i hate the give [TS]

00:47:29   me your pain thing I don't think it's [TS]

00:47:31   clear at all in the script of how that [TS]

00:47:33   works and how it's it's it's mind [TS]

00:47:36   control but it's also not mind control [TS]

00:47:38   it's just that once you don't have turns [TS]

00:47:40   out Sulu and Chekov in hora the only [TS]

00:47:42   reason that they followed orders was [TS]

00:47:44   because they were tormented by their [TS]

00:47:45   internal pain i guess because once they [TS]

00:47:48   were relieved of that they were happy to [TS]

00:47:49   go to the center of the galaxy with [TS]

00:47:51   sidewalk i also really don't understand [TS]

00:47:53   the scene where Sybok shows McCoy and [TS]

00:47:55   Kirk and Spock or walk away and Spock [TS]

00:47:58   the source of their pain because it's [TS]

00:48:00   unclear whether that's first it's like [TS]

00:48:02   is that happening in their heads or are [TS]

00:48:05   they seeing it and then are the initial [TS]

00:48:07   reaction shots from the other characters [TS]

00:48:09   like they're also seeing your personal [TS]

00:48:11   flashbacks which unless there's some [TS]

00:48:13   really strange like forebrain mind-meld [TS]

00:48:16   thing happening [TS]

00:48:17   it kinda doesn't hold up and doesn't [TS]

00:48:19   make any sense [TS]

00:48:21   and although the if the the scene with [TS]

00:48:22   McCoy and his dad is affecting in it in [TS]

00:48:26   a way and i know david i think i said [TS]

00:48:28   it's the only thing in the movie that [TS]

00:48:29   really works if it is yeah mostly works [TS]

00:48:33   it none of it none of it does not make [TS]

00:48:36   any sense luck until I find not [TS]

00:48:38   believable at any point I don't think he [TS]

00:48:39   has any [TS]

00:48:40   Dennis I don't think he believed him as [TS]

00:48:42   jovial I don't believe him as a Vulcan I [TS]

00:48:45   he's just a uh yeah he's a different [TS]

00:48:48   kind of open it is it's really it's [TS]

00:48:49   really like at the edge of what could [TS]

00:48:51   have been really deep and profound if [TS]

00:48:54   they had if they had really committed to [TS]

00:48:55   look what if the yeah they sure keep [TS]

00:48:58   coming back to the idea of hey look I [TS]

00:48:59   got my pain I gotta deal with the things [TS]

00:49:01   i have to be responsible for as I'm [TS]

00:49:04   watching this every excuse me at the end [TS]

00:49:05   of it i'm thinking my god would have [TS]

00:49:06   been wonderful if it were questionable [TS]

00:49:08   whether they'd actually found God or not [TS]

00:49:11   yeah there's enough evidence that no [TS]

00:49:13   actually we did find God but Kirk [TS]

00:49:16   because he knows that well if this is an [TS]

00:49:18   imprisoned alien entity these kids gonna [TS]

00:49:20   kill everybody so we can't take a chance [TS]

00:49:21   let's kill God and then for the [TS]

00:49:23   basically for the capture the movie has [TS]

00:49:25   to be well yeah I might have basically [TS]

00:49:27   disconnected all of creation from this [TS]

00:49:30   source of light and love and perfect [TS]

00:49:32   truth I gotta deal with that and [TS]

00:49:35   everyone's gonna like you're gonna hate [TS]

00:49:36   me for it [TS]

00:49:36   I mean there's so many simple problems [TS]

00:49:38   like you maybe you you mentioned whether [TS]

00:49:40   sidewalk has these magical powers if you [TS]

00:49:43   the fact that you make them a Vulcan [TS]

00:49:44   makes you have to question from the very [TS]

00:49:46   beginning is this something that is he [TS]

00:49:49   actually a very positive therapeutic [TS]

00:49:51   sort of guy or is he just having and [TS]

00:49:54   doing a mind-meld sort of thing and [TS]

00:49:56   making people look at like the like the [TS]

00:49:58   long either mystic whatever whatever [TS]

00:50:00   that stupid the medium medium long [TS]

00:50:02   medium that's the sidewalk has no shades [TS]

00:50:04   of gray and if we were wondering about [TS]

00:50:06   side pocket we wonder is he a cult [TS]

00:50:08   leader is a murderer or it is the UH [TS]

00:50:10   meaning you know a good intention guy is [TS]

00:50:14   a mind-controlling us or is he [TS]

00:50:16   and that sort of lays there in the [TS]

00:50:18   script but it's never really i did like [TS]

00:50:21   one moment though the one moment which [TS]

00:50:24   is one of the cheesiest moments when he [TS]

00:50:25   says we're gonna go find God Kirk says [TS]

00:50:28   you are bad and just the look yeah I [TS]

00:50:32   don't doubt that i dislike that's [TS]

00:50:33   actually that is surprising it was good [TS]

00:50:36   i think this movie fails so bad not just [TS]

00:50:39   for general audiences but for hardcore [TS]

00:50:41   Star Trek fans you know Star Trek for [TS]

00:50:43   appeal to everybody it was a it was a [TS]

00:50:46   crowd-pleaser it fans loved it [TS]

00:50:49   general audiences really loved it yeah [TS]

00:50:51   this one fails [TS]

00:50:53   one of the weight ways that it failed [TS]

00:50:54   with the failed with the hardcore [TS]

00:50:56   Trekkies is that we'd already seen a [TS]

00:50:58   much better story about an emotional [TS]

00:51:01   Vulcan in the McIntyre's novel [TS]

00:51:04   enterprise the first adventure which a [TS]

00:51:06   lot of Star Trek's and even yes yes it's [TS]

00:51:10   a it's a great story that's a much more [TS]

00:51:12   it is much more effective take on the on [TS]

00:51:16   the notion of what would be what it [TS]

00:51:18   would be like for a Vulcan to be [TS]

00:51:20   emotional it's in its box cousin so [TS]

00:51:23   right off the bat hardcore Trekkies who [TS]

00:51:26   buy the books and all this stuff or like [TS]

00:51:28   we've seen this before this is not new [TS]

00:51:31   the other thing that really pisses me [TS]

00:51:34   off about this movie is how every [TS]

00:51:37   character other than Kirk even even [TS]

00:51:41   spoken McCoy every other character is [TS]

00:51:45   taken down a few pegs there is made fun [TS]

00:51:48   off the engineer can't fix the ship and [TS]

00:51:50   bashes head the navigator and helmsman [TS]

00:51:52   get lost in the woods all communications [TS]

00:51:55   officer dances nude Spock's still out of [TS]

00:51:57   it even though he was all better at the [TS]

00:51:59   end of the last movie it's a joke that [TS]

00:52:01   check off could be the cannon captain I [TS]

00:52:04   hate this movie what it does to the [TS]

00:52:06   characters every character in this tells [TS]

00:52:10   Kirk how brilliant he is he's the only [TS]

00:52:12   one who with Stan's Sybok and any [TS]

00:52:16   apparently Spock and McCoy the original [TS]

00:52:18   draft we're also going to just go [TS]

00:52:20   totally with sidewalk and and the two of [TS]

00:52:22   them are good with that and said no our [TS]

00:52:25   characters wouldn't do that and so [TS]

00:52:28   that's the only reason they don't but [TS]

00:52:29   but yet everything is kirk is great and [TS]

00:52:33   then Kirk is God you know and and [TS]

00:52:34   especially that that moment in the end [TS]

00:52:36   the cat at the end of the movie he goes [TS]

00:52:38   maybe God's right here and he taps his [TS]

00:52:41   chest and there's that pause before he [TS]

00:52:43   says in the human heart [TS]

00:52:45   well that's not too oh that's not that [TS]

00:52:47   out of Star Trek cannon though like a [TS]

00:52:49   lot of Star Trek seems to be based [TS]

00:52:51   around and Kirk is the greatest guy in [TS]

00:52:53   the world like Star Trek Star Trek to [TS]

00:52:56   everybody love star trek to but he's so [TS]

00:52:58   great [TS]

00:52:59   he broke the Kobayashi Maru we don't [TS]

00:53:01   mind it there [TS]

00:53:02   yeah but but it's everybody's kind of [TS]

00:53:04   annoyed with him for [TS]

00:53:06   and graceful and he's flawed he is a [TS]

00:53:07   flawed PS user is refusing to accept his [TS]

00:53:10   his his own mortality and aging in the [TS]

00:53:13   ears kobayashi maru is a symptom of him [TS]

00:53:16   not being able to accept reality which [TS]

00:53:18   is not the case in Star Trek five he's [TS]

00:53:20   certainly flawed here because he claims [TS]

00:53:21   he loves the song row row your boat [TS]

00:53:23   doesn't make any Souls it's a great song [TS]

00:53:26   we don't have nobody left that licensing [TS]

00:53:28   the song we go to the public domain [TS]

00:53:30   well I think about the movie wasn't [TS]

00:53:32   being happy birthday watching at the end [TS]

00:53:34   with the with especially after during [TS]

00:53:37   the episode and wearing the captain [TS]

00:53:38   stubing shirt i realized that the end [TS]

00:53:40   David Warner comes up with the Romulan [TS]

00:53:43   ambassador it puts his arm around her [TS]

00:53:45   and sexy and stupid I'm like this is the [TS]

00:53:46   end of the love boat this last year and [TS]

00:53:49   yeah everyone your hair's up everything [TS]

00:53:50   sadly no Mary's Charo yeah it doesn't [TS]

00:53:52   matter at all kinds people died and all [TS]

00:53:55   kinds of things are going wrong it's [TS]

00:53:56   like and now let's put the happy music [TS]

00:53:58   at the end hopefully at least they're [TS]

00:54:00   treating their female characters [TS]

00:54:01   consistently throughout from the start [TS]

00:54:03   and the end of the movie so so but this [TS]

00:54:04   is of course the the infamous over a fan [TS]

00:54:07   dance scene isn't here i am in the midst [TS]

00:54:10   of a even more ludicrous scene involving [TS]

00:54:12   the desert raid that happens on the on [TS]

00:54:15   the the whatever-it-is desert outpost [TS]

00:54:18   that is ignited in the new tradition [TS]

00:54:21   Kirk solo march to the bar to rescue the [TS]

00:54:24   hostages and he's attacked by a triple [TS]

00:54:26   breasted cat warrior this is beyond get [TS]

00:54:28   Ripper cat stripper [TS]

00:54:30   thank you and and he lifts her up and [TS]

00:54:32   throw her into the pools or face down [TS]

00:54:35   she's dead and it's will order dance in [TS]

00:54:38   my neighborhood it's a cool too and I'm [TS]

00:54:40   like it goes on they cut back and she's [TS]

00:54:42   still motionless facedown you know a [TS]

00:54:47   chance she was the star to look at [TS]

00:54:48   business hurt her like her like she's [TS]

00:54:50   like the logo of that bar feeling neon [TS]

00:54:52   yeah if you notice but let's say I did [TS]

00:54:54   have to like actually come up your for [TS]

00:54:56   female characters two of them do [TS]

00:54:59   stripteases and the other two one of [TS]

00:55:02   them is a Klingon warrior ok that's cool [TS]

00:55:04   and the last one is just as she's just [TS]

00:55:07   cheesy ambassadors there too [TS]

00:55:08   hey dollface really got through alleged [TS]

00:55:10   we hate and and one of the Klingon [TS]

00:55:12   warrior she gets ogled by yeah check out [TS]

00:55:15   yeah and just really powerful legs [TS]

00:55:18   she's great muscle person was makeup is [TS]

00:55:21   unlike any other women sling on we ever [TS]

00:55:23   see she's got like a lipgloss people can [TS]

00:55:27   exact same thing that we did was take [TS]

00:55:29   them something on wants to be pretty [TS]

00:55:31   ya know i'm going to click on but that's [TS]

00:55:33   not how they are pretty maybe if it was [TS]

00:55:36   like the blood of her and her big events [TS]

00:55:38   or something they would she have put ya [TS]

00:55:40   human these Klingons are on the [TS]

00:55:42   spaceship they have been exposed to [TS]

00:55:43   other cultures [TS]

00:55:44   these are the worst Klingons in any Star [TS]

00:55:46   Trek movie you guys know that's how [TS]

00:55:48   powerful advertising is they even [TS]

00:55:49   managed to Shane McLane onto itself to [TS]

00:55:52   itself load that's because she's worth [TS]

00:55:53   it for all the things in this movie that [TS]

00:55:56   are awful and there's so many it's all [TS]

00:55:59   almost all of them you know what's you [TS]

00:56:01   know what's the one thing that drives me [TS]

00:56:03   nuts through almost the entire film when [TS]

00:56:06   Spock nerve pinches a horse [TS]

00:56:09   James Jones terrible artifact although [TS]

00:56:11   yes where the enterprise is sort of a [TS]

00:56:13   drift because the special effects guy is [TS]

00:56:15   incompetent and always from the back [TS]

00:56:17   hook no I the the little gray and brown [TS]

00:56:23   and TN military sweaters that they have [TS]

00:56:26   for their assault rate i love that cost [TS]

00:56:29   of salt sweaters you know they're [TS]

00:56:31   wonderful [TS]

00:56:32   the thing that drives me nuts for the [TS]

00:56:34   whole thing is Kirk's little collar has [TS]

00:56:37   that little section that sort of folded [TS]

00:56:39   under the sweater and then I guess they [TS]

00:56:41   kept it because they couldn't reshoot [TS]

00:56:44   something so they kept the continuity of [TS]

00:56:46   it all through the movie i'm going to [TS]

00:56:48   fix your damn collar Jim fast the caller [TS]

00:56:51   that's all it's that it's a stupid my [TS]

00:56:54   David that's not that's like number [TS]

00:56:56   9,000 on the offenses and I know but you [TS]

00:56:59   keep seeing over the moment you fix that [TS]

00:57:01   color this movie who really good [TS]

00:57:04   there are some guidelines there are some [TS]

00:57:05   guidelines of the god what has gotten [TS]

00:57:07   spaceship but it's also the star liked [TS]

00:57:09   it better before he died [TS]

00:57:11   that's a great line yeah like that it [TS]

00:57:13   suggested that the previous movies had [TS]

00:57:15   happened [TS]

00:57:16   yeah it's exactly it's not that it's [TS]

00:57:17   synthetic likely it's like God I want to [TS]

00:57:19   make sure before he died [TS]

00:57:22   another thing I just like about this [TS]

00:57:24   movie by the way is the lighting III [TS]

00:57:26   appreciate Andy saying that it feels [TS]

00:57:28   cinematic at various points i find i [TS]

00:57:30   find that it [TS]

00:57:31   it's very poorly lit it's it's weirdly [TS]

00:57:34   kind of yellow and they're strange [TS]

00:57:35   shadows and it doesn't seem stylistic to [TS]

00:57:38   me it seems incompetent to me and it's [TS]

00:57:42   just a I think the movie looks bad [TS]

00:57:44   because of it because the lighting is so [TS]

00:57:46   weird and and not good so I'll throw [TS]

00:57:49   that on the pile to some pretty major [TS]

00:57:54   ilj so yeah I feel terms with pink why [TS]

00:57:57   pinks and purples and lavenders and just [TS]

00:58:01   express shiners colorful guy but that I [TS]

00:58:04   thought the opening scenes were pretty [TS]

00:58:05   good like that in the end it just just [TS]

00:58:08   the cinematography just with just the [TS]

00:58:10   way that was photographed and here i'm [TS]

00:58:12   not talking about woody this is one of [TS]

00:58:14   the greatest like this could have been a [TS]

00:58:16   David Lee movie talk about i'm used to [TS]

00:58:18   like Star Trek for and star trek to [TS]

00:58:21   where it looks like just they sent [TS]

00:58:24   somebody on amazon.com said you've got a [TS]

00:58:26   hundred bucks to buy some LED lights [TS]

00:58:28   will click them right to the front of [TS]

00:58:29   the camera will buy some high intensity [TS]

00:58:32   high-wattage light bulbs will put the [TS]

00:58:33   lamps in the back at least looked like a [TS]

00:58:36   movie then actually play out like a [TS]

00:58:38   movie but at least like I think Star [TS]

00:58:40   Trek to looks way more like a movie star [TS]

00:58:42   trek five does especially when are [TS]

00:58:43   poorly lit a certain either argue star [TS]

00:58:46   trek for looks way more like a movie [TS]

00:58:47   star trek yeah I'm star trek 3 looks [TS]

00:58:49   like a TV show [TS]

00:58:50   yes yeah yeah what more can we say about [TS]

00:58:52   Star Trek five anybody have anything [TS]

00:58:55   else to say like everybody loves desert [TS]

00:58:57   planets you got a raucous you got to [TS]

00:58:59   wean you got the dry land [TS]

00:59:00   you get embarrassed sims3 it joins the [TS]

00:59:03   Pantheon is desert wastes and lacked [TS]

00:59:06   peace and also the chief exporter of [TS]

00:59:10   holes as we see the whole farmer even [TS]

00:59:12   open shot yes [TS]

00:59:14   yeah is we got a long as i got it for [TS]

00:59:18   midnight oil getting those are beautiful [TS]

00:59:20   so in this 3 is a planet where weapons [TS]

00:59:22   are not allowed the whole planet [TS]

00:59:24   appearances barristers bandits full of [TS]

00:59:27   galactic peace and many dollars and [TS]

00:59:30   Sandy similarly well it's easy to have a [TS]

00:59:32   planet of peace if nobody wants to go [TS]

00:59:34   there and that's really not a lot of [TS]

00:59:37   words on the South Pole either so what [TS]

00:59:39   in in reading thousands of galactic [TS]

00:59:42   peace [TS]

00:59:42   I you know I found out that [TS]

00:59:44   Harv Bennett apparently blamed the [TS]

00:59:47   failure of the movie partly on people [TS]

00:59:50   you know suddenly we have the next [TS]

00:59:52   generation on driver fatigue than they'd [TS]

00:59:54   rather stay home and watch that at home [TS]

00:59:56   yeah it's like if that were true it [TS]

00:59:58   wouldn't have been the number one movie [TS]

00:59:58   wouldn't have been the number one movie [TS]

01:00:00   in weekend yeah he knows people came out [TS]

01:00:02   for it and then they saw it when God [TS]

01:00:04   know it is funny to see that it turns [TS]

01:00:07   out that people involved in the creation [TS]

01:00:09   of Star Trek five like to blame the [TS]

01:00:10   existence of Star Trek The Next [TS]

01:00:11   Generation its failure because it was [TS]

01:00:13   the first Star Trek film to be released [TS]

01:00:15   with a Star Trek TV series on the air [TS]

01:00:18   but they're wrong time we expected [TS]

01:00:23   I mean the other thing is you have your [TS]

01:00:25   director and even if you don't like [TS]

01:00:27   you're George Takei and you don't really [TS]

01:00:29   care about chatter you're still doing [TS]

01:00:31   what the director tells you you're still [TS]

01:00:32   following had their vision of this story [TS]

01:00:36   and and so it's kind of like natalie [TS]

01:00:39   portman in the prequels she is a really [TS]

01:00:41   good actress she has awful in the [TS]

01:00:43   prequels because she's doing what the [TS]

01:00:44   director told her to do and in this case [TS]

01:00:47   you've got Shatner and so yeah they're [TS]

01:00:50   all they're doing what they can [TS]

01:00:53   I mean anything that is good in a [TS]

01:00:55   delivery of a line almost has to be [TS]

01:00:58   subversive right it has to be the actor [TS]

01:01:01   saying I this is I can I know how to do [TS]

01:01:03   this line bill shut up and and the only [TS]

01:01:06   times that they really come alive when [TS]

01:01:08   they are being funny when they are in [TS]

01:01:10   these scenes that are just what you [TS]

01:01:12   think of is as shatters goofiness don't [TS]

01:01:14   tell me how to say it [TS]

01:01:15   it sickens me because I feel like one of [TS]

01:01:20   the mistakes in this movie is is this [TS]

01:01:22   kind of over confidence in the ability [TS]

01:01:25   for them to do comedy that starcraft for [TS]

01:01:29   which is a funny movie and they do a [TS]

01:01:32   good job and it is a really clever trick [TS]

01:01:35   to get that movie to be as funny as it [TS]

01:01:36   is and i feel like its star trek five [TS]

01:01:38   just thinks oh we're funny and is really [TS]

01:01:41   lazy with its jokes and the most [TS]

01:01:43   offensive [TS]

01:01:44   actually we mentioned earlier i want to [TS]

01:01:45   say i think the single worst thing that [TS]

01:01:48   happens in any Star Trek movie is Scotty [TS]

01:01:51   walking into the the beam you call my [TS]

01:01:53   god and then they haven't be unconscious [TS]

01:01:56   and take him to sick bay so they even [TS]

01:01:57   like oh no but it's a plot point now to [TS]

01:01:59   it's not just a joke it's a plot point [TS]

01:02:00   people and it is it is you know where is [TS]

01:02:03   the sad trombone music at that point is [TS]

01:02:05   so terrible [TS]

01:02:07   it's not only just against his character [TS]

01:02:08   it's not funny it is the bassist form of [TS]

01:02:11   slapstick but I think throughout this [TS]

01:02:12   movie [TS]

01:02:13   the jokes are way too easy and it's [TS]

01:02:15   because honestly somebody thought hey [TS]

01:02:17   we're great comedy now and start [TS]

01:02:20   recording it was was harder to do than [TS]

01:02:22   that it was a tougher trick them and the [TS]

01:02:24   pacing of that moment doesn't even work [TS]

01:02:26   no I mean that I don't like the back of [TS]

01:02:29   my hand funk and i think is all the [TS]

01:02:32   relationships in the movie and this to [TS]

01:02:34   harp on this because we should this bad [TS]

01:02:36   is even a bit where he wakes up and [TS]

01:02:37   there's a her I'm like are they in a [TS]

01:02:39   relationship it's portrayed a child's [TS]

01:02:41   level both in the first part where she [TS]

01:02:43   bring some dinner the plastic bin the [TS]

01:02:45   tiny bag right and that part 80 and [TS]

01:02:47   likes are the action relationship are [TS]

01:02:49   you just you're just doing some kind of [TS]

01:02:51   like infantile it was almost like Scotty [TS]

01:02:53   can feed himself when he gets wrapped up [TS]

01:02:57   in what he's doing [TS]

01:02:58   let's eat dinner but i will say going [TS]

01:03:01   back to that documentary and the the [TS]

01:03:04   funny thing [TS]

01:03:05   william shatner said you know I wanted [TS]

01:03:07   to make this a drama it wasn't supposed [TS]

01:03:08   to be funny or supposed to be you know [TS]

01:03:10   they're looking for ipod and they told [TS]

01:03:13   me since Star Trek for was so popular we [TS]

01:03:16   needed to make Star Trek 5 funny [TS]

01:03:18   yeah that's it felt to me like somebody [TS]

01:03:20   looked at the script said this neat [TS]

01:03:22   thing needs to be more zany you have a [TS]

01:03:25   comedy feels like somebody striving for [TS]

01:03:26   zany yeah and and the characters have no [TS]

01:03:29   heart as a result that just a dry speak [TS]

01:03:32   the inter it's just drives me crazy [TS]

01:03:34   it shares some of the faults that [TS]

01:03:37   nemesis has in that the characters even [TS]

01:03:40   especially through Star Trek two through [TS]

01:03:42   four they had an arc they had a reason [TS]

01:03:45   to be going from point A to point B and [TS]

01:03:48   then star trek five [TS]

01:03:49   hey all of a sudden we're back on the [TS]

01:03:52   ship we're back where we started from [TS]

01:03:54   we're just older and what will be funny [TS]

01:03:58   now but it's wanders and and we did talk [TS]

01:04:00   about this in the star trek for episode [TS]

01:04:01   of random to track its ponder its [TS]

01:04:03   wonders that last bit of star trek for [TS]

01:04:06   when the movie and star trek for has [TS]

01:04:08   this little little a skoda we're on the [TS]

01:04:10   bridge of the enterprise [TS]

01:04:11   it's like finally after this whole story [TS]

01:04:13   between Star Trek 2 3 and 4 has gotten [TS]

01:04:15   us to this point where we can go back [TS]

01:04:16   out and have other adventures like you [TS]

01:04:19   remember from the old star trek series [TS]

01:04:20   won't this be great and then we get star [TS]

01:04:23   trek five [TS]

01:04:24   we were wrong when i gave you what you [TS]

01:04:28   asked for [TS]

01:04:28   not what you wanted no I mean not Star [TS]

01:04:32   Trek the motion picture I look at it as [TS]

01:04:34   like a noble failure they were trying to [TS]

01:04:36   do grand things they just did it badly [TS]

01:04:41   this is hack this is that this is just [TS]

01:04:43   this is just hacked out garbage i can't [TS]

01:04:45   i cannot improve upon your garbage Jason [TS]

01:04:48   it is garbage [TS]

01:04:49   yeah yeah you know it's I didn't have [TS]

01:04:50   the strong opinion after finishing [TS]

01:04:51   watching until we talked about it and i [TS]

01:04:53   realize i watched the motion picture of [TS]

01:04:55   that like was slow and thin but it was [TS]

01:04:57   fine it's just dull right and after we [TS]

01:05:00   talked about actually actively like this [TS]

01:05:03   movie much less than what I watched it [TS]

01:05:04   on monday disagrees [TS]

01:05:07   I didn't do disagree i found Star Trek [TS]

01:05:09   the motion picture god-awful boring you [TS]

01:05:12   endless you're tracking shots you have [TS]

01:05:14   special in back guess agree nothing [TS]

01:05:16   happening at all at least in Star Trek [TS]

01:05:18   five somebody wrote a joke [TS]

01:05:21   somebody is trying to do something to [TS]

01:05:24   ride some level of entertainment for me [TS]

01:05:26   which did not happen in the first what [TS]

01:05:28   we're arguing between is a movie that is [TS]

01:05:30   smooth and slick and deadly boring and a [TS]

01:05:36   movie that is crass and crappy but at [TS]

01:05:39   least moves along a nice clip and has [TS]

01:05:42   some study and risers and tries and I [TS]

01:05:44   think it's up to all of us to decide [TS]

01:05:46   which would which of those we would [TS]

01:05:47   prefer them i think they're both awful [TS]

01:05:50   and I was with when I hated more and i [TS]

01:05:53   hated the first one a lot more than the [TS]

01:05:55   second I user is searching 5i i think [TS]

01:05:57   i've come to accept that Star Trek the [TS]

01:05:59   motion picture is just going to be kind [TS]

01:06:00   of pretty and boring and go on forever [TS]

01:06:01   or star trek five just makes me angry [TS]

01:06:03   with it with each other of the two of [TS]

01:06:07   the two friends that I i agree they're [TS]

01:06:09   both awful [TS]

01:06:11   the only thing that gives star trek five [TS]

01:06:16   any kind of edge for me and I'm not I'm [TS]

01:06:19   not even saying I like it better than [TS]

01:06:21   the motion picture but that one scene [TS]

01:06:23   with McCoy and his father not even the [TS]

01:06:25   Sybok part of it just that sequence [TS]

01:06:28   between the two of them is more powerful [TS]

01:06:31   than anything in the motion picture that [TS]

01:06:34   that scene is great the hands and you [TS]

01:06:37   know and and [TS]

01:06:38   but it's also the most serious scene in [TS]

01:06:40   the whole damn movie you know for this [TS]

01:06:42   is a movie here is this really intense [TS]

01:06:44   saying of of euthanasia and and him [TS]

01:06:48   realizing that he if he had just waited [TS]

01:06:50   but maybe his father couldn't have [TS]

01:06:52   waited you know and and that and well [TS]

01:06:55   and I was gonna say that it's not even [TS]

01:06:57   that feels like a manufactured story i [TS]

01:06:59   mean that that feels like someone who [TS]

01:07:01   has gone through that at least the the [TS]

01:07:04   experience of a parent dying and I mean [TS]

01:07:07   it hit me in the theater in 1989 it's [TS]

01:07:10   him even more now as an older person who [TS]

01:07:13   has added a pair and I and I mean it's [TS]

01:07:15   just really nicely done [TS]

01:07:18   how much of that is you know the actors [TS]

01:07:20   and then the moment how much of that is [TS]

01:07:22   the writing I don't know you know I [TS]

01:07:24   thought that I'm with you there i [TS]

01:07:26   thought that was most certainly I think [TS]

01:07:28   the strongest seen the entire movie one [TS]

01:07:30   of very few strong scenes in the movie [TS]

01:07:31   but it also was sort of emblematic of [TS]

01:07:34   the problems with a movie that they just [TS]

01:07:35   don't know how to trust you seem to play [TS]

01:07:37   out in and of itself [TS]

01:07:38   yes that was what if what if it wasn't [TS]

01:07:41   that oh that oh my they discovered a [TS]

01:07:43   cure for two hours late two years later [TS]

01:07:45   was just know you had no there was no [TS]

01:07:48   cure discovered for your spending the [TS]

01:07:49   rest of your unit you're going to spend [TS]

01:07:50   the rest of your life no matter what [TS]

01:07:52   wondering if it was the right thing to [TS]

01:07:53   do and even was the right thing to do it [TS]

01:07:55   was going to be completely gutting to [TS]

01:07:56   know that you can get that no matter how [TS]

01:07:59   correct it was you are responsible for [TS]

01:08:01   the death of your father at that time [TS]

01:08:03   just like if they decided to go with the [TS]

01:08:06   sort of thing where what if there's [TS]

01:08:07   nothing magical or mystical about it [TS]

01:08:10   what if there's just a message that says [TS]

01:08:11   whatever it is you've done in your life [TS]

01:08:14   that is the beauty of it cause you to [TS]

01:08:16   put three bricks in the backpack you're [TS]

01:08:18   carrying everyday your life you can take [TS]

01:08:19   those bricks out you don't you're not [TS]

01:08:21   responsible for that and not that a not [TS]

01:08:25   that you have this little junior high [TS]

01:08:26   literary magazine twist at the end [TS]

01:08:28   wait a minute you mean that this pill [TS]

01:08:30   actually never did anything to our [TS]

01:08:32   brains at all it just allowed us to [TS]

01:08:33   forgive ourselves you know it's but [TS]

01:08:36   they're so this is the most frustrating [TS]

01:08:38   thing about movies for me is when you [TS]

01:08:40   can see oh god you just there's one more [TS]

01:08:44   door he opens the glass door you would [TS]

01:08:46   have found something beautiful but he [TS]

01:08:48   said nope work [TS]

01:08:49   good let's go Matt room and seeing the [TS]

01:08:51   original cut then then it's like oh and [TS]

01:08:53   by the way bones a shuttlecraft fell [TS]

01:08:55   from the sky onto his grave and [TS]

01:08:57   destroyed the crap and then a starship [TS]

01:09:00   fella you know I came up with an even [TS]

01:09:02   pedestrians level along the scenes [TS]

01:09:04   didn't make enough then shoulda neva [TS]

01:09:07   takes because i'm watching some stuff [TS]

01:09:09   and I'm like that someone actually [TS]

01:09:11   misspoke several times I've never asked [TS]

01:09:14   they actually said something wrong or [TS]

01:09:16   almost wrong and that was to take the [TS]

01:09:18   you did not have coverage my [TS]

01:09:19   understanding i read a couple articles [TS]

01:09:21   about the making of this my [TS]

01:09:22   understanding was that in in several [TS]

01:09:23   cases they had so little time they were [TS]

01:09:26   running so late and over schedule that [TS]

01:09:27   they would just yet they do it take her [TS]

01:09:29   too and they're moving on to the next [TS]

01:09:31   thing and and it's you know when Shatner [TS]

01:09:33   it's his first directorial effort and [TS]

01:09:36   you know you don't get the sense that he [TS]

01:09:38   had a whole lot of a support network [TS]

01:09:39   around him that he did this because he [TS]

01:09:41   could damn it not because he didn't have [TS]

01:09:44   a family around him who is helping him [TS]

01:09:45   do this and like hard Bennett didn't [TS]

01:09:47   want to be there and you know that [TS]

01:09:50   William dude let anymore really want to [TS]

01:09:52   be involved in this in this film that [TS]

01:09:55   that his old buddy was directing and you [TS]

01:09:58   know just to k really didn't like him [TS]

01:10:00   and didn't want to be in it and I don't [TS]

01:10:02   know if he was not at all although not a [TS]

01:10:05   did say he enjoyed it yeah after the [TS]

01:10:08   fact he said that yeah I I think we've [TS]

01:10:09   chatter was a professional guy and they [TS]

01:10:11   they wanted it they didn't want him to [TS]

01:10:12   fail and they were trying to sabotage [TS]

01:10:14   him but i'm not sure they were all [TS]

01:10:15   standing around like saying bill how can [TS]

01:10:17   I help can't let me take some of your [TS]

01:10:19   pain so water king was on it for 10 days [TS]

01:10:22   yeah yeah sienna and the scriptwriter [TS]

01:10:25   you know foot four star trek 52 David la [TS]

01:10:28   la [TS]

01:10:29   Lowery Lowery Lowery is you know he did [TS]

01:10:32   you know dreamscape before this and then [TS]

01:10:35   he ended up doing pad passenger 57 [TS]

01:10:37   that's right i think part of the problem [TS]

01:10:41   with this movie and Star Trek the motion [TS]

01:10:42   picture is there so many classic cast [TS]

01:10:45   members you have to drag on get given [TS]

01:10:48   their screen time give them their bit [TS]

01:10:50   and you know what not many of the [TS]

01:10:52   stories really require Sulu and check [TS]

01:10:54   off to have a lot that's the problem [TS]

01:10:56   with all the Star Trek movies you want [TS]

01:10:57   to give them a few months humble yeah [TS]

01:10:59   and then and then kind of move along [TS]

01:11:01   unfortunately or her as mom [TS]

01:11:02   and this seems to be to do a fandom [TS]

01:11:05   that's no bueno in the coverage though [TS]

01:11:06   i'm not going to defend this at all [TS]

01:11:08   however i was surprised and reviewing [TS]

01:11:10   this michelle nichols said no she was [TS]

01:11:12   really liked it she liked doing it the [TS]

01:11:13   only thing she was annoyed by as they [TS]

01:11:14   dubbed over voice and I was just find I [TS]

01:11:17   didn't know that I figured she'd be [TS]

01:11:18   talked into it or they used a body [TS]

01:11:20   double [TS]

01:11:20   she wasn't involved she's like no no was [TS]

01:11:22   great but they should use my singing [TS]

01:11:24   yeah I'm shocked that was her because it [TS]

01:11:26   she was completely silhouetted so you [TS]

01:11:28   couldn't see her face [TS]

01:11:29   mhm just like Shatner climbing the [TS]

01:11:32   mountain where you can't see his face [TS]

01:11:34   I really thought that was not michelle [TS]

01:11:36   nichols yes it is [TS]

01:11:38   zoom in a bit guys yeah well i gotta say [TS]

01:11:41   based on these two movies I don't know [TS]

01:11:43   why you guys like Star Trek so much haha [TS]

01:11:45   all the rest of it's like Isis example [TS]

01:11:47   put sky I promise I'm gonna throw this [TS]

01:11:50   the last question we refer to you which [TS]

01:11:51   is do you have a do you have a thought [TS]

01:11:54   about which one of these films is is [TS]

01:11:56   that the worst well star trek five does [TS]

01:12:01   have a scene where Klingon bird-of-prey [TS]

01:12:04   shoots got in the face [TS]

01:12:06   yeah that but I think Star Trek five is [TS]

01:12:12   far worse than Star Trek the motion [TS]

01:12:14   picture only because of the same moment [TS]

01:12:17   that you pick Jason of Scotty hitting [TS]

01:12:20   his head on that beam is it is the lunch [TS]

01:12:24   line worst thing in star trek by far [TS]

01:12:27   yeah I do not like it yeah I didn't like [TS]

01:12:30   the first time I started five I didn't [TS]

01:12:32   like it the second time I saw Star Trek [TS]

01:12:34   5 which was for this podcast doesn't [TS]

01:12:36   feel bad to have that blu-ray it's a [TS]

01:12:37   little like I feel about having the [TS]

01:12:39   Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the [TS]

01:12:40   Crystal Skull blu-ray it's not because I [TS]

01:12:42   got the box but it with other words but [TS]

01:12:45   I own it now i feel like i want to put a [TS]

01:12:47   post-it so that if if your relatives are [TS]

01:12:49   cleaning out your house after you die to [TS]

01:12:51   look it was part of the set a forehand [TS]

01:12:53   and the boxes so flimsy that I simply [TS]

01:12:55   took it out and threw it away they would [TS]

01:12:57   like go in on the side is provided some [TS]

01:12:59   needed structure for the actual physical [TS]

01:13:01   it's it's nestled between Star Trek for [TS]

01:13:03   Star Trek six both of which i like so [TS]

01:13:05   yeah both better better films all right [TS]

01:13:09   well I'm gonna wrap this up this is this [TS]

01:13:10   this end part one of our our trip to bad [TS]

01:13:14   star trek movie land there will be in [TS]

01:13:16   really cathartic anything in a few weeks [TS]

01:13:18   we will do we will do another one that [TS]

01:13:22   has a different panel and we will be [TS]

01:13:23   talking about the next generation two [TS]

01:13:24   films from the next generation series [TS]

01:13:26   that we considered the worst of the two [TS]

01:13:28   although i'm not convinced you know [TS]

01:13:31   there is a question about really there's [TS]

01:13:33   only the one good one so there you know [TS]

01:13:35   and many of you have three other ones [TS]

01:13:36   but we will watch two of those for that [TS]

01:13:39   for that one but I'm but this has been a [TS]

01:13:41   trip to the the low points of the [TS]

01:13:43   original series Star Trek films [TS]

01:13:46   I'd like to thank my guests for for [TS]

01:13:47   sharing their pain and learning from the [TS]

01:13:50   sharing David lord thank you thank you I [TS]

01:13:53   I thought I didn't like Star Trek five [TS]

01:13:56   before but now i really hate it so this [TS]

01:13:59   has been good could have been healing [TS]

01:14:01   you've taken my pain good Glenn [TS]

01:14:03   fleischmann the transporter is good [TS]

01:14:06   well as they always say broken the needs [TS]

01:14:09   of the many are outweighed by the needs [TS]

01:14:10   of the PU all right Doug strips other [TS]

01:14:14   shock re thank you Jason you have proved [TS]

01:14:18   yourself worthy to receive from us this [TS]

01:14:20   symbol of total logic excellent very [TS]

01:14:23   nice indian not co torpedo away I i will [TS]

01:14:32   say that this has been very helpful in [TS]

01:14:34   that just your last five minutes has [TS]

01:14:36   made me realize it i still think that [TS]

01:14:38   the worst i don't like really love any [TS]

01:14:41   of the Star Trek movies but i think that [TS]

01:14:42   ok star trek to but I said I do realize [TS]

01:14:45   that as painful as watching one and five [TS]

01:14:48   were i think i would have just not been [TS]

01:14:50   able to show up for screening for for [TS]

01:14:52   the show if we were doing Star Trek next [TS]

01:14:54   generation movies because those were [TS]

01:14:57   just sins against Isis there since [TS]

01:14:59   yesterday stay tuned stay Times list [TS]

01:15:01   powerful and yeah everybody got to [TS]

01:15:03   choose which one they wanted to be on I [TS]

01:15:06   would have sent you two minutes and [TS]

01:15:07   weeping into the microphone i would drop [TS]

01:15:09   about it with your little sentimental [TS]

01:15:10   reserve activation clause that got me [TS]

01:15:13   here [TS]

01:15:13   Monty Ashley they gave they give her [TS]

01:15:16   back to me Monty in the words of the [TS]

01:15:19   Klingons in Star Trek five burp and of [TS]

01:15:26   course Scott melty thank you [TS]

01:15:28   life is not a dream who Nick very nice [TS]

01:15:34   and thank you to everybody out there for [TS]

01:15:35   listening to this episode i hope you [TS]

01:15:37   didn't watch these movies before [TS]

01:15:38   listening because uh I feel bad [TS]

01:15:40   we'd hate to have ruined them for young [TS]

01:15:42   men from the spoilers and william [TS]

01:15:49   shatner if you're listening I'm sorry [TS]

01:15:50   it's really it's we've been calling it [TS]

01:15:53   shatters folly for 25 years for a reason [TS]

01:15:55   he's not building bills it's not about [TS]

01:15:57   this you know he's blocked us already [TS]

01:15:59   built can handle a few guys making fun [TS]

01:16:01   of him on the internet it's apple booty [TS]

01:16:03   screw that alright well thanks everybody [TS]

01:16:05   for listening we will see you next time [TS]

01:16:21   okay i have a closing statement [TS]

01:16:27   ok Glen have to lay it on us so listen [TS]

01:16:29   I'm the war and I speak for the probes I [TS]

01:16:32   thought it was despicable the treatment [TS]

01:16:34   of probes and both of these movies that [TS]

01:16:36   forgot it was a through-line pyar 10 and [TS]

01:16:38   the non-existent voyager 6 did not get [TS]

01:16:40   the treatment they deserved but I've [TS]

01:16:42   spent years writing about probes in the [TS]

01:16:44   recent past [TS]

01:16:45   I feel like I know them personally and I [TS]

01:16:46   felt like these movies were two front to [TS]

01:16:49   all the hard work and effort that they [TS]

01:16:51   put in [TS]

01:16:51   that's it i did feel bad for those [TS]

01:16:54   probes its leader like we haven't kissed [TS]

01:16:58   that Decker guy with his with his prime [TS]

01:17:00   yeah drama i leave as a probe to [TS]

01:17:02   everybody's proven i think if process [TS]

01:17:06   Khambatta had had any sort of a [TS]

01:17:08   character before turning into it I know [TS]

01:17:10   she would have been way more interesting [TS]

01:17:12   i know they I mean they almost gave her [TS]

01:17:15   character but they didn't that innate it [TS]

01:17:18   they should have just left her a [TS]

01:17:19   nameless extra i'm turning out of any [TS]

01:17:21   Linus you any movie that maybe cringe [TS]

01:17:23   more than the celibacy of line i forgot [TS]

01:17:26   it was coming then she said it I my [TS]

01:17:29   memory [TS]

01:17:30   it was presented a less exposed story [TS]

01:17:32   fashion and that's when I don't I just [TS]

01:17:34   thought that was fine i can't tell you [TS]

01:17:36   the number number times I've shown for [TS]

01:17:38   the first day work and someone for the [TS]

01:17:39   first time I've taken about a brain cell [TS]

01:17:42   identity [TS]

01:17:43   ok just a dial nine to get an outside [TS]

01:17:46   line of the means of here [TS]

01:17:47   here's a bizarre thing i didn't mention [TS]

01:17:49   the show which is out there is a line [TS]

01:17:50   and stroking motion picture the baffles [TS]

01:17:51   me which is maybe it's just my own [TS]

01:17:53   personal taste here but when they're [TS]

01:17:55   talking on the communicator to Starfleet [TS]

01:17:57   Command when they've sent back you know [TS]

01:18:00   melting piles of flesh that used to be [TS]

01:18:02   people translating to say yeah the guy [TS]

01:18:04   the guy on the other influences [TS]

01:18:06   enterprise what we got back here didn't [TS]

01:18:10   live long [TS]

01:18:11   fortunately it's just like this guy just [TS]

01:18:14   saw this guy saw people like melt and [TS]

01:18:18   explode in a transporter room he should [TS]

01:18:20   be like Enterprise it also have you also [TS]

01:18:24   said two sections and I just say that [TS]

01:18:27   like when I was a teenager downloading [TS]

01:18:29   things using the xcode xmodem Morsy [TS]

01:18:31   modem protocol there was something that [TS]

01:18:33   protocol that said oh [TS]

01:18:34   this connection is no good i'm not even [TS]

01:18:36   advises yeah i just wish they were using [TS]

01:18:39   zmodo again it was like on a list of [TS]

01:18:42   like you know we never shown why McCoy [TS]

01:18:44   is afraid of transporters so we let's [TS]

01:18:46   have a transporter accident [TS]

01:18:47   what does have to do with the movie [TS]

01:18:48   nothing Star Trek five the contractual [TS]

01:18:52   minutes i took a friend of mine from [TS]

01:18:54   college to to this and she had never [TS]

01:18:57   seen any Star Trek before he was like no [TS]

01:19:00   I'll go with you that'll be fun and we [TS]

01:19:01   go into the theater and the first off [TS]

01:19:03   everybody it's a matinee showing its in [TS]

01:19:05   my thing came out in june so it's like [TS]

01:19:07   towards the end of the school year my [TS]

01:19:08   freshman year in college and we go into [TS]

01:19:11   the theater and it is entirely like the [TS]

01:19:15   hardest of the hardcore Star Trek fans [TS]

01:19:17   on the guy we're sitting next to has [TS]

01:19:19   brought his reference material with him [TS]

01:19:21   he's bad strap books and maybe like a [TS]

01:19:23   clipboard and a pen and he's gonna take [TS]

01:19:25   notes and all that and she looks at me [TS]

01:19:27   like what have I gotten into an honest [TS]

01:19:28   look I'm sorry I like Star Trek but you [TS]

01:19:31   don't see me carrying around any books i [TS]

01:19:32   left the books at home and he was gonna [TS]

01:19:35   like annotate the drawings of the [TS]

01:19:37   enterprise as it went I don't even know [TS]

01:19:39   cells there so we sit down maybe he was [TS]

01:19:41   just gonna entertain himself before the [TS]

01:19:42   film so we sit down I'm thinking well [TS]

01:19:44   you know at least we can enjoy the movie [TS]

01:19:46   and it was starting five [TS]

01:19:47   yeah we went opening night and it was [TS]

01:19:51   just a whole bunch of my old high school [TS]

01:19:52   friends and you know and beforehand it's [TS]

01:19:55   like yeah start for was awesome yeah and [TS]

01:19:59   we were very quiet at the investment and [TS]

01:20:01   we just kind of looked at each other and [TS]

01:20:03   when let's go get something to drink [TS]

01:20:07   so that's why I'm so concerned about [TS]

01:20:08   spoilers in the spot gases you know [TS]

01:20:10   i-i-i my wish for people is that they [TS]

01:20:12   have the exact same experience that we [TS]

01:20:14   had as as children not knowing exactly [TS]

01:20:17   how disappointed were going to be just [TS]

01:20:19   let it be a surprise every one of these [TS]

01:20:20   little things I didn't realize you had [TS]

01:20:23   such a sadistic street to you and II and [TS]

01:20:26   III see when when when you when you bite [TS]

01:20:28   me I'll bite back [TS]

01:20:30   that's all the fourteen-year-old looked [TS]

01:20:31   up through both of these movies and why [TS]

01:20:33   are you making me watch these now notice [TS]

01:20:35   nobody's nobody's strapped into the [TS]

01:20:37   chair walk away just walk by look at [TS]

01:20:39   watch the good ones i got a lot of [TS]

01:20:41   sympathy are discussing doesn't wear [TS]

01:20:42   those great people feel really bad for [TS]

01:20:43   me [TS]

01:20:45   I looked at the slack and asked why are [TS]

01:20:46   you making me watch these yeah me nobody [TS]

01:20:49   nobody make know what exactly is it was [TS]

01:20:52   that I was reflecting upon that tonight [TS]

01:20:53   thing that I I knew how bad this movie [TS]

01:20:55   was and yet I at some point i was asked [TS]

01:20:57   would you like to watch this movie and [TS]

01:20:59   talk about have 11 people say yes yes i [TS]

01:21:01   would like to be on the bed Star Trek [TS]

01:21:02   movies episode that's why we're doing [TS]

01:21:03   two of them so I mysterious I [TS]

01:21:05   legitimately never seen five and I'm [TS]

01:21:08   like well that'll be something that it [TS]

01:21:11   is something it is [TS]
