00:00:45   incomparable this is one of our episodes [TS]

00:00:46   where we are walking through all of the [TS]

00:00:49   films of hayao miyazaki the great [TS]

00:00:51   japanese animation director we have [TS]

00:00:54   talked about of course kiki's delivery [TS]

00:00:56   service and my neighbor totoro we are [TS]

00:01:00   talking in this episode about nineteen [TS]

00:01:02   eighty-four years [TS]

00:01:03   Masika of the valley of the wind now [TS]

00:01:05   again we did back when the incomparable [TS]

00:01:08   hadn't done almost 300 episodes and we [TS]

00:01:10   thought we could do like all of the joss [TS]

00:01:12   whedon TV shows in one episode we did an [TS]

00:01:15   episode about miyazaki yeah i thought we [TS]

00:01:17   were young and stupid test an episode [TS]

00:01:19   and we talked about it briefly then but [TS]

00:01:22   now we're going back because you know [TS]

00:01:23   these podcasts are going to post [TS]

00:01:25   themselves and we're gonna talk about [TS]

00:01:26   them individually you know a couple [TS]

00:01:28   years so an Oscar the valley of the wind [TS]

00:01:30   is what we talked about this time let me [TS]

00:01:32   tell you who's on the miyazaki club [TS]

00:01:34   you heard him he's complaining already [TS]

00:01:37   it's steve lots hi Steve I'm not [TS]

00:01:38   complaining I'm just pointing out how [TS]

00:01:40   doubt naive we were to think we could [TS]

00:01:42   get through such fine works in yeah it's [TS]

00:01:45   help [TS]

00:01:45   it's true also this nut tastes really [TS]

00:01:47   weird that's my favorite line i wrote [TS]

00:01:49   again from this movie this nut tastes [TS]

00:01:52   really weird Eric and sign was laughing [TS]

00:01:55   head strange notes about the taste of [TS]

00:01:57   nuts [TS]

00:01:57   hi hello I'm happy you finally got into [TS]

00:02:00   my favorite miyazaki movie [TS]

00:02:02   oh very nice admittedly actually seen [TS]

00:02:05   that many of them so maybe it's a [TS]

00:02:08   slightly skewed sample all right Colleen [TS]

00:02:10   Sims is also out there hello and welcome [TS]

00:02:12   to miyazaki club i think there are more [TS]

00:02:14   seeds the nuts and I don't know it [TS]

00:02:17   looked like couscous or something where [TS]

00:02:19   I know he just in the end he says this [TS]

00:02:21   not taste really weird [TS]

00:02:22   yes she said it's not it's good for you [TS]

00:02:25   because it right okay interesting [TS]

00:02:27   exchange good he can eat a boot full of [TS]

00:02:29   them [TS]

00:02:30   I and wouldn't be miyazaki club without [TS]

00:02:33   John siracusa hello i'm assuming we'll [TS]

00:02:36   all get our own fox squirrels at the end [TS]

00:02:37   of this episode my yarn over here [TS]

00:02:40   yeah i'm looking forward to the fox [TS]

00:02:41   squirrels appearance in the upcoming [TS]

00:02:42   Ratchet and Clank movie 20 years [TS]

00:02:45   I'm with yes ok he looks just like [TS]

00:02:46   ratchet our client rather know Rachel [TS]

00:02:48   whatever so 1984 it's a it's not secure [TS]

00:02:55   its postapocalyptic barren want to [TS]

00:02:57   bugs there are some ostriches that are [TS]

00:02:58   written here let me let me just do the [TS]

00:03:00   opening [TS]

00:03:01   I know it's gonna seem like this you're [TS]

00:03:02   gonna do everything step-by-step i'm not [TS]

00:03:03   i just want to say a few words about the [TS]

00:03:05   very you know we've done the credits and [TS]

00:03:07   it's that the opening sequence so John [TS]

00:03:09   this is not an opening statement is a [TS]

00:03:11   statement about the opening right [TS]

00:03:12   exactly like yeah you're not gonna it's [TS]

00:03:14   not like we're not going to an opening [TS]

00:03:16   statement to a good fellows and go [TS]

00:03:18   through this thing has seen a time but I [TS]

00:03:19   feel like the way this movie opens is [TS]

00:03:21   just so so wonderful starting from the [TS]

00:03:23   credits of here to talk about with this [TS]

00:03:24   sort of the backstory given to you in a [TS]

00:03:27   compressed way with the beautiful mural [TS]

00:03:29   murals changing to the the live-action [TS]

00:03:31   corporate you know animation of a [TS]

00:03:34   present-day I'm racinos ago flying if [TS]

00:03:36   you've seen the movie before you know it [TS]

00:03:37   is on little flying wind wing and she [TS]

00:03:40   lands and she's wandering through this [TS]

00:03:42   weird looking at you know forest or [TS]

00:03:45   jungle or whatever her face is entirely [TS]

00:03:47   covered something that they did and uh [TS]

00:03:48   and the force awakens as well [TS]

00:03:50   goggles mask everything you can't even [TS]

00:03:52   tell anything about this person and they [TS]

00:03:54   do like a slow reveal where eventually [TS]

00:03:56   she pulls up the goggles and you can see [TS]

00:03:58   her eyes and she does some more stuff [TS]

00:04:00   and then yeah she's there with the quiet [TS]

00:04:04   moment on top of the home shell which is [TS]

00:04:06   yet another instance of my my emblematic [TS]

00:04:10   of all the anime that I like possibly [TS]

00:04:11   emblematic of all anime moment where [TS]

00:04:14   it's a quiet moment where she is sitting [TS]

00:04:16   under the Home shell and the the spores [TS]

00:04:18   which was like snow we're just falling [TS]

00:04:19   and it is dead silent and there's me and [TS]

00:04:21   you can choose which is just watching [TS]

00:04:22   the stuff all that is in the same slot [TS]

00:04:25   as looking up through the water droplets [TS]

00:04:28   in your diving goggles in ghost in the [TS]

00:04:30   shell or Kiki sitting on the hill [TS]

00:04:32   listening to the radio with the wind [TS]

00:04:33   blowing at them in the beginning of [TS]

00:04:35   kiki's delivery service that everything [TS]

00:04:37   we had like seat has to have that moment [TS]

00:04:39   where it's quiet reflection no music no [TS]

00:04:42   sound effects and some beautiful scene [TS]

00:04:44   involving nature and of course she hears [TS]

00:04:46   the you know thing going on and goes off [TS]

00:04:48   to to save Lord yuba which is our first [TS]

00:04:50   major act in the movie aside from [TS]

00:04:51   finding the shell is saving this of this [TS]

00:04:54   old guy who supposedly the world's best [TS]

00:04:55   swordsman and then at the end of that [TS]

00:04:58   scene you finally get the full reveal of [TS]

00:05:01   not just her eyes but her entire face [TS]

00:05:03   and her hair and she sort of exuberantly [TS]

00:05:05   tears off her mask and runs over and [TS]

00:05:07   give them a big [TS]

00:05:08   ugh i think that whole intro of leading [TS]

00:05:11   you into who this character is bit by [TS]

00:05:12   bit while showing you that for the rest [TS]

00:05:15   of this movie [TS]

00:05:16   not only will she be the center of it [TS]

00:05:18   she's got her name in the title after [TS]

00:05:19   all but she will be driving the action [TS]

00:05:22   like she does things it everything that [TS]

00:05:25   happens in this movie that has any [TS]

00:05:26   consequences because of her for the most [TS]

00:05:29   part and she started throwing out right [TS]

00:05:30   away of like I'm going to go I'm gonna [TS]

00:05:33   find the shell I'm gonna save this [TS]

00:05:34   character i'm going to bring this fox [TS]

00:05:36   world home and that's one of the things [TS]

00:05:38   i love about this movie and one of the [TS]

00:05:39   reasons i was one of the first [TS]

00:05:40   Miyazaki's i showed my children even [TS]

00:05:42   though there are you know a couple of [TS]

00:05:44   rough / scary parts where they were [TS]

00:05:46   scared of the bugs for a little bit is [TS]

00:05:47   because it shows in a matter-of-fact way [TS]

00:05:50   a unconventional character being [TS]

00:05:53   essentially a conventional hero without [TS]

00:05:55   making a big deal about it [TS]

00:05:56   I do kind of love that that she is [TS]

00:05:59   revealed so slowly at the beginning that [TS]

00:06:01   you don't really know open who she is or [TS]

00:06:03   her age which I guess her age maybe a [TS]

00:06:06   little iffy overall even by the end of [TS]

00:06:08   the movie but but yeah that it's not [TS]

00:06:10   revealed you don't quite get an idea of [TS]

00:06:12   how young she is I don't think she's [TS]

00:06:13   young and she sounds until until quite a [TS]

00:06:17   later on and what you're really seeing [TS]

00:06:19   is how capable and competent she is this [TS]

00:06:22   is a character who truly kicks ass and I [TS]

00:06:24   mean you know it's not to the point [TS]

00:06:25   where she's being a killing the hell out [TS]

00:06:27   of guys left and right yet but we're [TS]

00:06:29   still seeing her be pretty awesome at [TS]

00:06:31   the beginning [TS]

00:06:31   yeah that's that's one of the first [TS]

00:06:33   things that I appreciated about the [TS]

00:06:35   movie and because it's been a few years [TS]

00:06:37   since i've watched it like since my [TS]

00:06:39   husband and I got together in 2007 it's [TS]

00:06:41   a long time and and so I didn't remember [TS]

00:06:44   a lot of it and she's prepared like [TS]

00:06:48   she's prepared and she's smart and she's [TS]

00:06:50   resourceful and you can tell that like [TS]

00:06:53   we don't have the story on her yet but [TS]

00:06:55   we can tell that people depend on her to [TS]

00:06:57   do things like all right in the first I [TS]

00:07:01   don't know three minutes and and I think [TS]

00:07:03   that's pretty amazing and that's one of [TS]

00:07:05   the things that Miyazaki does so well is [TS]

00:07:08   establishing a strong female characters [TS]

00:07:13   immediately are almost immediately [TS]

00:07:16   yeah you get to see her taking the the [TS]

00:07:18   Gunpowder out of a show [TS]

00:07:20   sprinkle it around to be able to break [TS]

00:07:22   that home sweetie Mythbusters on that [TS]

00:07:24   because I said I wouldn't work [TS]

00:07:26   Mythbusters get yourself items LOL [TS]

00:07:29   Michelle I'm sure yeah [TS]

00:07:31   step 1 I think hotels are extra [TS]

00:07:33   susceptible to the particular type of [TS]

00:07:35   gun powder that they use in the [TS]

00:07:36   post-apocalyptic few miles ahead Kevin [TS]

00:07:39   very nice [TS]

00:07:39   yeah so the the other angle on her being [TS]

00:07:43   a person of action and like you know [TS]

00:07:45   she's doing things she's not that she is [TS]

00:07:48   driving the plot is that the the thing [TS]

00:07:50   that she does saving this this great [TS]

00:07:52   swordsman because he was in trouble and [TS]

00:07:53   she saves him again all matter of fact [TS]

00:07:57   she saves him like this movie emphasizes [TS]

00:07:59   many many many times that heroism does [TS]

00:08:02   not equal quote-unquote manliness right [TS]

00:08:04   she doesn't kill the ohm ok that's not [TS]

00:08:06   how she achieves victory over over the [TS]

00:08:09   the in section that the job to be nice [TS]

00:08:11   to save the person she resolves the [TS]

00:08:13   conflict by calming leone down right and [TS]

00:08:16   sending him back into the same thing [TS]

00:08:18   with with the fox squirrel the Fox [TS]

00:08:19   world's cute she wants to pet it it you [TS]

00:08:22   know it's freaking out it's scared and [TS]

00:08:23   bites her she resolves that conflict not [TS]

00:08:26   by teaching the fox squirrel who's boss [TS]

00:08:28   or having the Fox girl come to respect [TS]

00:08:30   her as the you know the alpha or [TS]

00:08:31   whatever she does it by calming and it's [TS]

00:08:34   not again [TS]

00:08:34   they don't hit you over the head with it [TS]

00:08:36   but almost every conflict but it with [TS]

00:08:38   her interaction in that conflict is to [TS]

00:08:40   try to do something good which is the [TS]

00:08:42   good guy right try to save people say [TS]

00:08:44   people who might even be your enemy or [TS]

00:08:45   whatever and to resolve conflict [TS]

00:08:48   conflict between people who are acting [TS]

00:08:49   out of fear and she is [TS]

00:08:51   I mean it's not that she doesn't have [TS]

00:08:52   fear she has a GS fear she has anger but [TS]

00:08:54   she's always trying to de-escalate and I [TS]

00:08:57   and that's the other thing about this is [TS]

00:08:58   like she has put in normal situations [TS]

00:09:00   and she has to be the hero but she [TS]

00:09:02   doesn't do the stereotypical like [TS]

00:09:04   physical dominance manly macho solution [TS]

00:09:08   to these problems she is not a killing [TS]

00:09:10   machine she's not even the world's best [TS]

00:09:11   swordsman she can barely lift the sword [TS]

00:09:13   that she uses an anger later in the [TS]

00:09:15   movie actually she's a pretty solid [TS]

00:09:16   killing machine [TS]

00:09:17   yeah traditional three is you just shied [TS]

00:09:19   away from it because she doesn't want to [TS]

00:09:21   be a killer which I think if it even [TS]

00:09:23   more admirable than not being able to do [TS]

00:09:24   in the first place she wanted the only [TS]

00:09:25   problem that I have with the characters [TS]

00:09:27   she's almost too competent he never [TS]

00:09:30   really makes a misstep I'm the closest [TS]

00:09:32   thing to a mr. [TS]

00:09:33   is that she gets a little overwrought i [TS]

00:09:35   guess you could say when her father is [TS]

00:09:37   killed and she kills a bunch of dudes [TS]

00:09:39   and then she realizes that was a mistake [TS]

00:09:40   but I mean almost every choice she makes [TS]

00:09:43   is the right choice in this film but not [TS]

00:09:46   not obviously so because there's a [TS]

00:09:47   particular scene later and then when [TS]

00:09:49   she's taken hostage like she's going to [TS]

00:09:51   be one of the volunteer hostages or [TS]

00:09:53   whatever and all the little girls in the [TS]

00:09:55   village like oh no don't go we look up [TS]

00:09:57   to you so on and so forth right and [TS]

00:10:00   she's like oh it's okay i'll be back in [TS]

00:10:01   she's calming them down that's when they [TS]

00:10:03   give her the bad to bring her there sack [TS]

00:10:05   of nuts yes right and they go so well [TS]

00:10:07   thing and she's all smiles and then she [TS]

00:10:10   gets on the plane and the music cue when [TS]

00:10:12   she gets onto that plane is the most [TS]

00:10:14   discordant note in the entire movie and [TS]

00:10:15   you realize she's putting a brave face [TS]

00:10:17   on this but she understands and all the [TS]

00:10:20   adults understanding you the viewer now [TS]

00:10:21   meant understand that most likely she's [TS]

00:10:23   not coming back she's gonna be dead like [TS]

00:10:25   or everyone the villagers can be there [TS]

00:10:26   she's gonna be that if you're never [TS]

00:10:27   going to see anyone again so it's not as [TS]

00:10:29   if she glides through this movie as if [TS]

00:10:31   the victory is certain and they try to [TS]

00:10:33   emphasize that by saying things are [TS]

00:10:35   going badly and she's putting a brave [TS]

00:10:37   face on it but she understands this is [TS]

00:10:39   what the situation is now she's she's [TS]

00:10:41   able to you know endure but she's a very [TS]

00:10:44   sort of she has a lot of perseverance [TS]

00:10:46   and and gusto and she's and I have a [TS]

00:10:48   tight and I have a day of however young [TS]

00:10:50   she is but she has a dark moments to [TS]

00:10:52   when she's down there in her little [TS]

00:10:53   thing with her with her weird little [TS]

00:10:55   plants and she understands that things [TS]

00:10:57   are going badly for her whole valley and [TS]

00:10:59   chances are everybody she knows [TS]

00:11:00   including herself could soon be dead [TS]

00:11:02   yeah I I actually like the fact that she [TS]

00:11:03   is so near infallible in this movie [TS]

00:11:06   because it's just it is a joy for me to [TS]

00:11:08   watch it and I'd like sometimes I just [TS]

00:11:10   like a little bit of escapism and [TS]

00:11:12   escapism for me at its best is where I [TS]

00:11:15   have something like this where there's a [TS]

00:11:16   character who you know sometimes bad [TS]

00:11:19   things happen to them but it comes out [TS]

00:11:21   all right in the end and there's [TS]

00:11:23   somebody that can really identify with [TS]

00:11:25   and and feel good about identifying with [TS]

00:11:27   because they're they're doing the right [TS]

00:11:28   thing pretty much all the time and that [TS]

00:11:31   the dark moments she has are really more [TS]

00:11:33   of self doubt and fear of the future and [TS]

00:11:36   that is something that i think probably [TS]

00:11:37   everybody can relate to i know i [TS]

00:11:39   certainly can [TS]

00:11:40   so so that the dark patches that she has [TS]

00:11:43   to go through our things that [TS]

00:11:45   a little bit more relatable to me then [TS]

00:11:47   making a choice that goes really poorly [TS]

00:11:49   for her kingdom because you know I'm not [TS]

00:11:51   a princess does she have to be princess [TS]

00:11:53   by the way that was one of the things i [TS]

00:11:54   was thinking is like princesses [TS]

00:11:56   apparently all the women in the story [TS]

00:11:58   princesses that gets the car question [TS]

00:12:00   that I have towards the middle of my [TS]

00:12:01   notes here that we can address any time [TS]

00:12:03   which is the the central question this [TS]

00:12:05   movie does nozzle live in a patriarchy [TS]

00:12:08   yeah I don't know I don't know I just [TS]

00:12:10   had that Disney Princess moment of like [TS]

00:12:12   well of course she's great and she's a [TS]

00:12:13   princess but I'm not sure she needs to [TS]

00:12:15   be at any point in the story other than [TS]

00:12:17   fact that she's in her father gets [TS]

00:12:19   killed but I mean I'm not sure that was [TS]

00:12:21   I just it seemed to me like almost like [TS]

00:12:24   extra that wasn't didn't need to be [TS]

00:12:26   there that she was oh she's not only all [TS]

00:12:27   these great things but yes of course [TS]

00:12:29   she's also the princess [TS]

00:12:30   why don't necessarily marks her as as [TS]

00:12:33   inferior so much as if it just points [TS]

00:12:36   out the fact that she's kind of a leader [TS]

00:12:38   amongst your people as is Keshawn is a [TS]

00:12:41   is a princess as well right I'm gonna [TS]

00:12:42   tell usually a leader like that's what [TS]

00:12:44   I'm saying like it in the movie [TS]

00:12:45   obviously nautical thinks of herself as [TS]

00:12:47   just another person but how does [TS]

00:12:49   everyone else treat how it is she living [TS]

00:12:51   in a world that is essentially the to [TS]

00:12:54   treat women as lesser look at all the [TS]

00:12:55   other women and in their village what [TS]

00:12:57   are they doing what are their jobs [TS]

00:12:58   what is their role in the society [TS]

00:13:00   obviously she's the daughter of the king [TS]

00:13:02   and so she's an important person she is [TS]

00:13:03   respected and of course people respect [TS]

00:13:05   and look up to her [TS]

00:13:06   mostly because she's a good person but [TS]

00:13:08   at various points in the movie like when [TS]

00:13:09   the plane crashes and they're like [TS]

00:13:11   everyone to the the plane crash site [TS]

00:13:13   even the boy is gonna blow my nose isn't [TS]

00:13:15   all hands on deck to help rescue no one [TS]

00:13:17   considers having the women company later [TS]

00:13:19   the way you know the women they're all [TS]

00:13:20   they're not in like you know that [TS]

00:13:22   headscarves are covered mostly covered [TS]

00:13:24   up and they're mostly carrying around [TS]

00:13:25   food or children and yet here's nautica [TS]

00:13:27   living in this world which is not a [TS]

00:13:29   world where it's like oh we're all equal [TS]

00:13:31   here and we have lots of people in this [TS]

00:13:33   village were just like nautica she is [TS]

00:13:35   sort of out of I feel like she is out of [TS]

00:13:37   step with the sort of rebuilding feudal [TS]

00:13:40   society that is coming from the ashes of [TS]

00:13:41   the world and she's essentially living [TS]

00:13:43   in a typical disney princess world but [TS]

00:13:45   she is not conforming to the disney [TS]

00:13:48   princess stereotype and for the most [TS]

00:13:50   part the other people in her village the [TS]

00:13:52   village let her get away with it like we [TS]

00:13:53   don't see anyone [TS]

00:13:54   pooping her are trying to keep her down [TS]

00:13:56   like they encourage her to do things [TS]

00:13:58   but every other woman I say is I I don't [TS]

00:14:01   feel like she needs to be a princess [TS]

00:14:02   feel like it's like oh and on top of her [TS]

00:14:04   being this amazing person who goes out [TS]

00:14:07   into the waste lands and salvages things [TS]

00:14:09   from the own which are your it's funny [TS]

00:14:12   that you mentioned ray and star wars [TS]

00:14:14   because boy that it really is quite [TS]

00:14:16   similar isn't it mom [TS]

00:14:18   they that she oh and did I mention she's [TS]

00:14:20   also the princess of the valley it's [TS]

00:14:22   like really she needs to be that that [TS]

00:14:24   was my only point is like she's so [TS]

00:14:26   awesome as it is it's like of course [TS]

00:14:28   she's also the princess she's got all [TS]

00:14:30   the things I me maybe to get in a little [TS]

00:14:31   bit tense deeper i think perhaps what [TS]

00:14:34   John was saying actually leads to what [TS]

00:14:36   you're saying Jason the fact that this [TS]

00:14:38   is sort of a patriarchy and it really [TS]

00:14:40   does seem to be I mean you also get the [TS]

00:14:42   scene later where she is saved by the [TS]

00:14:45   women of the sheet society who are [TS]

00:14:48   trapped you know together it's just [TS]

00:14:49   women and children right now [TS]

00:14:51   yeah so the fact that she is her [TS]

00:14:53   father's daughter that she is the [TS]

00:14:54   princess of the town means that she has [TS]

00:14:56   had the freedom to develop all of these [TS]

00:14:59   cool skills and run away on her glider [TS]

00:15:01   and explore the forest and and all that [TS]

00:15:04   kind of stuff [TS]

00:15:05   perhaps if she wasn't a princess she [TS]

00:15:07   would have gotten to do any of that [TS]

00:15:08   stuff we wouldn't have a movie on first [TS]

00:15:09   that's true and also her being used as a [TS]

00:15:11   hostage right it makes sense as a as a [TS]

00:15:14   even her father is killed here makes [TS]

00:15:16   sense that you that's what happens [TS]

00:15:17   oftentimes to the the girl children of [TS]

00:15:21   royalty in these sorts of situations [TS]

00:15:23   right as they they're the ones who end [TS]

00:15:25   up being used as the hostages so she has [TS]

00:15:27   chosen to go off with the other hostages [TS]

00:15:29   at that point in the movement but all [TS]

00:15:32   the other hostages are men like if you [TS]

00:15:33   look at there are no other women dressed [TS]

00:15:35   like she is in her village where all the [TS]

00:15:37   other women dressed in these sort of [TS]

00:15:38   like house dresses and there are there [TS]

00:15:40   interfer out in the fields or whatever [TS]

00:15:41   she is dressed not necessarily like a [TS]

00:15:43   man but unique now again she's the hero [TS]

00:15:45   of the movie she's going to stand out so [TS]

00:15:47   on and so forth but she is [TS]

00:15:49   I like that because the way she acts is [TS]

00:15:52   it is it setting an example of saying [TS]

00:15:54   you may live in a society that is [TS]

00:15:56   regressive or backwards which makes [TS]

00:15:58   sense because you know the world was [TS]

00:16:00   destroyed thousand years ago and you're [TS]

00:16:01   just rebuilding Society and you know [TS]

00:16:03   it's a monarchy and there's you know [TS]

00:16:04   hereditary rule and now that your father [TS]

00:16:07   the first thing they do when they go [TS]

00:16:08   there they run right up and kill the [TS]

00:16:09   King guy because the whole idea ask [TS]

00:16:10   and the guys in charge and you gotta cut [TS]

00:16:12   you know sever the head and that that [TS]

00:16:14   would essentially end and her chances of [TS]

00:16:17   you know even if it she survived that [TS]

00:16:18   she's not going to be in charge of [TS]

00:16:19   anything anymore right because the yet [TS]

00:16:21   when taking notes the father is killed [TS]

00:16:22   it's not like she's going to take over [TS]

00:16:23   because you can have a woman in charge [TS]

00:16:24   but she is so out of step with that and [TS]

00:16:27   that's that's something i like it and [TS]

00:16:28   these kind of movies I like to feel like [TS]

00:16:30   you [TS]

00:16:31   not that it's realistic is all made up [TS]

00:16:33   fantasy stuff but like to show an unjust [TS]

00:16:36   world and someone overcoming that rather [TS]

00:16:39   than showing like Oh everybody's all [TS]

00:16:41   equal and that's why we can have all [TS]

00:16:42   these heroes who are on conventional to [TS]

00:16:45   show here's an unconventional hero who [TS]

00:16:47   is forced to live who has found a way [TS]

00:16:48   somehow to do this great thing and you [TS]

00:16:51   know maybe it's like a you know like you [TS]

00:16:53   said escape is in fantasy found a way to [TS]

00:16:55   be like this seemingly against all odds [TS]

00:16:58   within a society that is even more sort [TS]

00:17:01   of backwards than the one you're [TS]

00:17:02   currently living in I don't know how [TS]

00:17:04   much it make up there at least the [TS]

00:17:05   valley of the wind being backwards [TS]

00:17:07   because it's clear that once Geale is [TS]

00:17:08   dead that they all look to her as the [TS]

00:17:10   under the men and the women both well [TS]

00:17:12   she's great at everything well she's [TS]

00:17:14   great at everything that's true but the [TS]

00:17:15   other princesses is in charge of the [TS]

00:17:17   officer kind of only gets to freelance [TS]

00:17:19   when she's not around so she's yeah [TS]

00:17:21   right i mean it clear that these [TS]

00:17:23   societies have formed in a traditional [TS]

00:17:25   patriarchal way and that there's a [TS]

00:17:26   division of labor and the men are the [TS]

00:17:28   ones doing the heavy lifting the hard [TS]

00:17:29   labor the same thing with sean i think i [TS]

00:17:31   did the woman with the armor and [TS]

00:17:33   everything comes she and that's another [TS]

00:17:34   miyazaki drop of having having the big [TS]

00:17:36   bad be a woman to but again she is [TS]

00:17:38   clearly an exception like it's an army [TS]

00:17:40   full of men she's leading men or second [TS]

00:17:42   command is a man in the only reason [TS]

00:17:43   she's in charge because she's so [TS]

00:17:45   exceptional exceptional she's royal [TS]

00:17:47   right i think i think that this is the [TS]

00:17:48   case where the royalty part goes above [TS]

00:17:50   the whose and you know many men and [TS]

00:17:53   women part right it will first is [TS]

00:17:54   royalty and then there's men and then [TS]

00:17:56   there's women and so she's royalty and [TS]

00:17:59   so she's up on apartment on the top and [TS]

00:18:01   she's really good at what she does and [TS]

00:18:03   she is now clearly been through a lot [TS]

00:18:05   and and survived LOL you know one of her [TS]

00:18:07   only comments about that is the fact [TS]

00:18:09   that the you know whoever she takes as a [TS]

00:18:11   husband eventually it's going to see [TS]

00:18:13   worse [TS]

00:18:14   that's where the attitudes of the [TS]

00:18:15   scriptwriters sneak through and [TS]

00:18:17   we're little ways like there are always [TS]

00:18:19   those little comments you like but that [TS]

00:18:20   doesn't seem to fit all but that was [TS]

00:18:22   taken is so conventional that it would [TS]

00:18:24   never you know in like you two years [TS]

00:18:25   passed and you realize that so that's a [TS]

00:18:27   weird [TS]

00:18:27   that's a weird way to frame that what [TS]

00:18:28   she really is that how she would frame [TS]

00:18:30   this i don't think the character would [TS]

00:18:31   but the man who is writing the character [TS]

00:18:33   certainly did [TS]

00:18:35   [Music] [TS]

00:18:37   let's take a break so i can tell you [TS]

00:18:38   about our sponsor on this week's episode [TS]

00:18:51   and it was funny he was kind of driving [TS]

00:18:53   around like no no I want to have my [TS]

00:18:55   picture taken joking around and the [TS]

00:18:57   phone dropped and it was in a protective [TS]

00:18:58   case didn't matter it landed on a rock [TS]

00:19:00   and the screen shattered it can happen [TS]

00:20:06   that's I cracked.com / smell thank you i [TS]

00:20:10   crack for sponsoring this week's and [TS]

00:20:12   comfortable [TS]

00:20:13   [Music] [TS]

00:20:15   in the opening sequence at the first few [TS]

00:20:18   scenes the movie where she's out in the [TS]

00:20:20   desert and and end in the and then she [TS]

00:20:23   finds the shell and she charms the ohm [TS]

00:20:25   who's angry and past the red eyes and [TS]

00:20:27   all of that there is a whole lot of [TS]

00:20:30   dialogue of one person talking to nobody [TS]

00:20:34   explaining everything that happens and [TS]

00:20:37   that I I feel like for all the strength [TS]

00:20:40   of the visuals of that part of the movie [TS]

00:20:42   and the world-building I think it's [TS]

00:20:43   really interesting and and like the bugs [TS]

00:20:46   just 20 my fascinate I could kind of [TS]

00:20:48   watch [TS]

00:20:48   I kind of want a screensaver of just the [TS]

00:20:50   ohms just kinda like zipping along [TS]

00:20:51   because it's they're fascinating but the [TS]

00:20:54   dialogue is like just yeah I I moment I [TS]

00:20:57   found it really painful like we're just [TS]

00:20:59   gonna dump all of this out without you [TS]

00:21:01   i'm just a character talking to the air [TS]

00:21:03   hey let me tell you about the life that [TS]

00:21:05   I'm leaving and I thought that was that [TS]

00:21:07   was not so not so strong [TS]

00:21:08   yeah I don't know the progeny of this [TS]

00:21:09   film whether it started as a manga or [TS]

00:21:11   did what [TS]

00:21:12   but yeah that makes a lot of sense [TS]

00:21:14   because there's so much unexplored [TS]

00:21:15   backstory in this thing it feels like [TS]

00:21:17   much longer source material like a like [TS]

00:21:20   an entire set of manga I don't know what [TS]

00:21:23   they called series in that particular [TS]

00:21:25   form but or our full season of a TV [TS]

00:21:27   series that just got compressed down [TS]

00:21:29   into movie length and it's just that [TS]

00:21:31   there's so many unanswered questions and [TS]

00:21:33   I don't think there's any way to [TS]

00:21:34   approach it i guess other than to dump [TS]

00:21:36   it all at the front [TS]

00:21:37   nobody needs that they need to establish [TS]

00:21:38   the minimum i think they did they did a [TS]

00:21:40   really good job of not overdoing it in [TS]

00:21:43   terms of like how many lines are there [TS]

00:21:44   and how much space is there between [TS]

00:21:46   there is the whole opening which is [TS]

00:21:47   almost speech three but they do have to [TS]

00:21:48   get a few points that you have to [TS]

00:21:49   understand that this place is poison if [TS]

00:21:51   you breathe you'll die because that's [TS]

00:21:52   going to become important later for the [TS]

00:21:54   plot you have to understand that these [TS]

00:21:56   things are big bugs and that they're not [TS]

00:21:59   necessarily enemies of the humans but [TS]

00:22:01   there are you know skittish and if you [TS]

00:22:02   mess with them you're gonna get killed [TS]

00:22:04   and you have to understand that the [TS]

00:22:07   valley is protected from everything [TS]

00:22:09   that's happened by the wind and other [TS]

00:22:10   stuff and they need to get that out some [TS]

00:22:12   way and they they get most of the [TS]

00:22:14   backstory and the sort of the equivalent [TS]

00:22:15   of the kraal which is this terrible [TS]

00:22:17   narration and and [TS]

00:22:18   tub and a wall text but you having your [TS]

00:22:20   talk to yourself not the most artful way [TS]

00:22:21   to do it but she's not monologuing [TS]

00:22:24   non-stop she you know especially if you [TS]

00:22:27   see the time gap she says if you think [TS]

00:22:28   to yourself then does stuff then set [TS]

00:22:30   anything on the shelf for a while and [TS]

00:22:31   looks around then [TS]

00:22:32   then listen for a sound that you heard [TS]

00:22:33   that runs over there and it's it's not [TS]

00:22:35   the best but I've definitely seen worse [TS]

00:22:38   and because it starts so slowly with the [TS]

00:22:40   slow reveal and lots of not talking just [TS]

00:22:42   looking at the world [TS]

00:22:44   it never really bothered and sort of [TS]

00:22:46   dogs the movie elsewhere too though I [TS]

00:22:47   mean it's not just up at the front like [TS]

00:22:49   she she falls through the sand into the [TS]

00:22:52   forest and within 20 seconds from the [TS]

00:22:55   reasons that is thrice the amount of the [TS]

00:22:58   water and then they die and these [TS]

00:22:59   crystals descend and it's all explained [TS]

00:23:01   now [TS]

00:23:02   yes and I have a chart of the ecosystem [TS]

00:23:04   over here on the cave wall if you'd like [TS]

00:23:05   to see it [TS]

00:23:06   that feels like an entire like two or [TS]

00:23:08   three episode arc or something you know [TS]

00:23:10   that just got distilled down into its [TS]

00:23:12   its thinnest essence [TS]

00:23:14   yeah so we could get on to the next plot [TS]

00:23:15   point they try to short-handed by saying [TS]

00:23:17   this is like the sand in my room under [TS]

00:23:19   the castle to try to say because she [TS]

00:23:21   spent all that time there she [TS]

00:23:22   understands this she makes the [TS]

00:23:23   connection it's you know it's not a [TS]

00:23:26   major point of the movie they just want [TS]

00:23:27   to say oh she's figured out this is like [TS]

00:23:29   that and that's you know this is just [TS]

00:23:31   the the the the diametric opposite of [TS]

00:23:35   the other miyazaki films that we've [TS]

00:23:37   watched the like [TS]

00:23:38   Kiki's and totoro where the plot is like [TS]

00:23:40   this maybe 30 seconds of plot that's [TS]

00:23:42   extended out to two hours and this is [TS]

00:23:44   about seven days worth of plot that's [TS]

00:23:46   scrunched down in two hours [TS]

00:23:48   it's a very different experience it's [TS]

00:23:49   like manoukian that there is this [TS]

00:23:50   complicated plot and and you know [TS]

00:23:52   different different factions or who are [TS]

00:23:54   fighting over something and as the [TS]

00:23:56   premise and there's the whole you know [TS]

00:23:57   world problem they really it is a bigger [TS]

00:23:59   story that they want to like you could [TS]

00:24:01   you could have made this into three [TS]

00:24:02   movies if you want it but yeah the [TS]

00:24:04   longer i never read the comics either [TS]

00:24:06   but that longer version is surely filled [TS]

00:24:09   with much more detail about this but [TS]

00:24:11   this is the like I feel like this is one [TS]

00:24:13   of the most conventional stories [TS]

00:24:15   Miyazaki has ever done because you could [TS]

00:24:16   do a straight-up live actually origin of [TS]

00:24:19   this and it is very straightforward it [TS]

00:24:21   post-apocalyptic there's a story there [TS]

00:24:23   is a beginning middle and end it there [TS]

00:24:24   is no we're diversions [TS]

00:24:26   there's no like you know where the hell [TS]

00:24:28   is this even going and is this even a [TS]

00:24:30   story is very very compact and lots of [TS]

00:24:33   other movies I feel like riff on this [TS]

00:24:36   and slowly start to tear apart this [TS]

00:24:37   formula but this was just so has such a [TS]

00:24:40   good bones I feel like that the the [TS]

00:24:44   clumsiness of the expedition especially [TS]

00:24:46   in the dub because then you can just [TS]

00:24:47   like to read the subtitles and you [TS]

00:24:48   definitely does bother you last has [TS]

00:24:50   never probably because I always felt [TS]

00:24:51   like this is this is movie shorthand [TS]

00:24:54   that most movies always do and this [TS]

00:24:56   movie is aimed at not children so much [TS]

00:24:59   maybe teenagers so it's not trying to be [TS]

00:25:01   adult and sophisticated in the same way [TS]

00:25:03   that maybe you you would ask of a modern [TS]

00:25:05   action movie i'm not really recapping [TS]

00:25:07   the plot and there is a lot of it so we [TS]

00:25:10   we have I feel like we covered a lot of [TS]

00:25:11   this this is we got this initial post [TS]

00:25:13   apocalyptic world there are lots of bugs [TS]

00:25:15   there is the gnome shell and eastwood [TS]

00:25:17   rides into town on an ostrich wearing a [TS]

00:25:19   gas mask in leg warmer [TS]

00:25:20   yeah it's not like we're in this movie [TS]

00:25:23   are sweet the leg warmer game really hot [TS]

00:25:25   okay so let's talk about the ages 4-18 [TS]

00:25:27   for ya [TS]

00:25:28   speak speak like warmer some of this [TS]

00:25:30   music in this movie is beautiful i do [TS]

00:25:33   have a note at one point where i wrote [TS]

00:25:35   down music cues from 1984 where all the [TS]

00:25:39   sudden this timeless story then suddenly [TS]

00:25:41   there's a didn't do do do then i felt [TS]

00:25:44   like i was playing a video game for a [TS]

00:25:46   moment there yeah I have the phrase [TS]

00:25:48   painfully eighties in mind yeah I if I [TS]

00:25:51   have this phrase in my notes would say [TS]

00:25:52   wonderfully eighties and it's a wonder [TS]

00:25:55   why should qualify that it's the end of [TS]

00:25:57   a note that says the music in this [TS]

00:25:59   stands out more than the other [TS]

00:26:01   Miyazaki's I've seen and the music and [TS]

00:26:03   totoro and kikis are both great but here [TS]

00:26:06   it's I i think it drives the action of [TS]

00:26:09   the film in such a key way that I is it [TS]

00:26:11   always joe hisaishi that the same guy [TS]

00:26:14   does all this music which is [TS]

00:26:16   mind-blowing if you think about think [TS]

00:26:17   about the range between like the right [TS]

00:26:20   I'm not so much in the eighties portions [TS]

00:26:21   but in and some of the others where [TS]

00:26:23   things are a little more majestic [TS]

00:26:25   sounding and it's just that they're [TS]

00:26:26   there are a couple of cues that reminded [TS]

00:26:27   me of one of the Terminator the original [TS]

00:26:30   terminator it's like as tall or quite [TS]

00:26:33   frankly music from 1984 and what it was [TS]

00:26:35   striking because so much of it is [TS]

00:26:36   classic that the movie feels classical [TS]

00:26:38   music field classic and [TS]

00:26:40   then there are a couple of points where [TS]

00:26:41   it is just suddenly this is a movie from [TS]

00:26:44   1984 not 1985 1990 3 [TS]

00:26:48   it's from 1984 right on the nose and you [TS]

00:26:51   know it's all right it's all erased when [TS]

00:26:53   they get to the small girl doing the [TS]

00:26:54   lala part yes cast song that will never [TS]

00:26:57   ever leave my head covers and in essence [TS]

00:26:59   i saw this in 1995 I was really struck [TS]

00:27:02   by their use of silence to play clear [TS]

00:27:07   there's definitely that eighty cents [TS]

00:27:09   sound all over the place but there are [TS]

00:27:12   giant swathes where it's just silent and [TS]

00:27:16   the dialogue and I was thinking if that [TS]

00:27:18   were made today like if someone were to [TS]

00:27:20   read rewrite the music for this there [TS]

00:27:24   would not be so much quiet and I thought [TS]

00:27:26   that was I don't know if that's like in [TS]

00:27:28   1984 vs 2016 difference or if it was a [TS]

00:27:33   very intentional stylistic choice at the [TS]

00:27:35   time and but it was it was fascinating [TS]

00:27:39   to me like we go through this whole [TS]

00:27:40   dramatic scene where the ship the the [TS]

00:27:43   airship is going down because it's been [TS]

00:27:45   shot down and they're like gliding in a [TS]

00:27:47   glider and trying to save you know [TS]

00:27:50   trying to save the the other craft [TS]

00:27:52   that's gliding along and it's just quiet [TS]

00:27:54   it's not like dramatic music it's not [TS]

00:27:57   you know it's not like peril [TS]

00:28:00   it's just nothing is that Miyazaki thing [TS]

00:28:02   John because that definitely has been in [TS]

00:28:04   previous page and the other two that we [TS]

00:28:05   wish i would say it's an anime thing [TS]

00:28:07   where you drop out the music and usually [TS]

00:28:09   with the dropping of the music for so [TS]

00:28:11   you can hear whatever sound effect that [TS]

00:28:13   that the the director or whoever is in [TS]

00:28:16   creative control the film feels is most [TS]

00:28:18   emblematic of this thing so when we do [TS]

00:28:20   the next anime episode will be a similar [TS]

00:28:22   type of thing but sometimes there's like [TS]

00:28:23   are there many sounds going on the scene [TS]

00:28:26   but the 1i want you to hear and [TS]

00:28:29   concentrate on is the sound of the wind [TS]

00:28:32   even though they would be sounds of [TS]

00:28:33   engines and sounds of explosions or [TS]

00:28:35   sounds of flames I want you to think [TS]

00:28:36   about the sound of the wind right or [TS]

00:28:38   when they cut out everything like later [TS]

00:28:41   in the movie when they they had she's [TS]

00:28:42   she's trying to convince the thing [TS]

00:28:44   holding the baby home to not shoot her [TS]

00:28:45   whatever there is music there and then [TS]

00:28:49   our I figure one of the two scenes they [TS]

00:28:50   do a slow mo thing and they cut out the [TS]

00:28:52   muse [TS]

00:28:52   and the sound effects but then they they [TS]

00:28:53   bring you back in the whooshing because [TS]

00:28:55   that's what they want you to feel as the [TS]

00:28:56   publishing of her going past so usually [TS]

00:28:58   the dropouts are you know for drama and [TS]

00:29:02   most of the time with the exception of [TS]

00:29:04   the one key where they really drop out [TS]

00:29:05   everything because they want you to hold [TS]

00:29:07   your breath when you see if she's gonna [TS]

00:29:08   catch tambo right right [TS]

00:29:10   they put they want it is usually nature [TS]

00:29:12   sound basically and because they want [TS]

00:29:13   you to think about think of when you [TS]

00:29:15   were in a similar situation even though [TS]

00:29:17   there was lots going on what is the one [TS]

00:29:18   thing if they can you smell they would [TS]

00:29:20   like what is the one thing that brings [TS]

00:29:22   you back sense memory wise to a moment [TS]

00:29:24   in your life that might have been like [TS]

00:29:26   this or that evokes this particular [TS]

00:29:28   encounter or senior setting or whatever [TS]

00:29:30   yeah yeah yeah i like but we mentioned [TS]

00:29:33   the silence at the beginning to end the [TS]

00:29:35   wind again miyazaki we talking about [TS]

00:29:38   wind sounds of wind i wanted to mention [TS]

00:29:41   flying so i watch the wind rises wind in [TS]

00:29:44   the title which is a recent miyazaki [TS]

00:29:48   where he PT it's all about airplanes and [TS]

00:29:51   making airplanes and dreams of flying [TS]

00:29:52   and things like that and i was struck [TS]

00:29:55   watching this about all the flying [TS]

00:29:59   that's in this you've got that you've [TS]

00:30:00   got the glider you've got the mechanics [TS]

00:30:03   of like tethering the gliders to the the [TS]

00:30:05   the powered craft you've got plant slow [TS]

00:30:08   plane crashes and fast plane crashes and [TS]

00:30:11   dogfights and clouds and dogfights not [TS]

00:30:13   in clouds and I if I had to say there's [TS]

00:30:17   a unifying thing about this movie above [TS]

00:30:20   all else I mean you know it its action [TS]

00:30:23   in the sky [TS]

00:30:25   there's just a whole lot of action in [TS]

00:30:26   the sky lot of bugs flying around and [TS]

00:30:29   they're bugs lots of bugs miyazaki loves [TS]

00:30:32   planes in case you have to figure this [TS]

00:30:33   out every movie he's not the wind rises [TS]

00:30:35   i know we love planes that I mean but [TS]

00:30:37   that was like a career capper every one [TS]

00:30:40   of his movies if you can find excuse to [TS]

00:30:41   have a flying thing flying contraption a [TS]

00:30:43   plaintiff sometimes it's uplands and [TS]

00:30:45   girls on brooms but you know other times [TS]

00:30:47   its planes yeah i mean just think of how [TS]

00:30:49   geeky flies like a broom like there's [TS]

00:30:51   nothing special about flying bicycle for [TS]

00:30:52   instance right but but think of how [TS]

00:30:54   think about he looks when she's flying [TS]

00:30:56   how much cut how how much effort was put [TS]

00:30:58   into make it look like flying on broom [TS]

00:31:02   is not just you we talk about the TV [TS]

00:31:03   show you don't just sit there and then [TS]

00:31:04   it goes from point A to point B [TS]

00:31:06   like it's a monorail right flying on a [TS]

00:31:07   room looks looks dangerous and and [TS]

00:31:10   skittish and like you're balancing on a [TS]

00:31:12   wooden thing high above the sky he is [TS]

00:31:14   obsessed with with flying machines and [TS]

00:31:18   the idea of flying and it is in all of [TS]

00:31:19   his movies [TS]

00:31:20   this one yeah this one is like totally [TS]

00:31:21   like the doodles of a middle schooler [TS]

00:31:23   like I can make some of these plants [TS]

00:31:25   like they're made of lead so how could [TS]

00:31:27   that even fly that the planes a they [TS]

00:31:28   look like bugs which is great because [TS]

00:31:30   like you know the society would build [TS]

00:31:31   flying things based their styling and [TS]

00:31:34   design based on the things they see [TS]

00:31:35   flying like the bugs and be just plain [TS]

00:31:38   after playing 2 wings you know for wings [TS]

00:31:41   wings in the back wings in the front [TS]

00:31:43   round wing stubby wings the the [TS]

00:31:46   unfolding wings of the gunship that the [TS]

00:31:48   glider thing he just goes hog-wild yeah [TS]

00:31:50   I i love the I loved all the plane stuff [TS]

00:31:54   I thought I thought it was really upset [TS]

00:31:55   i love actually I kinda love the [TS]

00:31:56   destruction of it to that we have that [TS]

00:31:58   we have that whole crash at the [TS]

00:32:02   beginning or near the beginning right [TS]

00:32:04   with a huge this huge ship that turns [TS]

00:32:06   out is loaded down with this weapon and [TS]

00:32:10   and she gets on her clyde er which is [TS]

00:32:12   again her glider is one step away from [TS]

00:32:15   being keys broom right she gets on her [TS]

00:32:18   glider and she's like shouting turn and [TS]

00:32:21   turn to the giant airship that's not [TS]

00:32:23   gonna work it smashes it breaks into [TS]

00:32:25   pieces the pieces rain down almost [TS]

00:32:28   everybody's dead except for the one [TS]

00:32:29   princess again [TS]

00:32:31   boy it's all princesses who says one [TS]

00:32:33   thing before she expires [TS]

00:32:35   it's just it's spectacular she's [TS]

00:32:36   mortally wounded they have they they try [TS]

00:32:39   to get that across without showing his [TS]

00:32:40   blood and guts for the idea she opens it [TS]

00:32:42   up it's like it is here that you know [TS]

00:32:43   i'm not a doctor but that's you're not [TS]

00:32:45   gonna make it [TS]

00:32:46   yeah she seems okay about that's the [TS]

00:32:48   problem with it's like well you know [TS]

00:32:50   your fatally wounded in a very gentle [TS]

00:32:52   way but fatal trust wandering in a way [TS]

00:32:55   that's visible as soon as we open your [TS]

00:32:57   shirt but yeah mhm otherwise not that [TS]

00:32:59   bad yeah yeah this movie is scary enough [TS]

00:33:02   to young children don't think they need [TS]

00:33:03   a door but they they do it later when [TS]

00:33:06   you're her shoulder is sliced yeah and a [TS]

00:33:08   shot as hell gore that I could imagine [TS]

00:33:10   she was seeing under [TS]

00:33:11   under the princess estelle or whatever [TS]

00:33:14   name brother [TS]

00:33:14   yeah well you have a light plane crash [TS]

00:33:17   right i mean it presumably they're just [TS]

00:33:19   like flaming and/or and bodies and [TS]

00:33:22   pieces of bodies and wreckage and all [TS]

00:33:24   this stuff but yeah we get to see the [TS]

00:33:26   graves later but we don't actually see [TS]

00:33:28   the bodies that they're putting into the [TS]

00:33:29   scrapes right right but it's so it's [TS]

00:33:31   spectacular in that that is one of the [TS]

00:33:33   things that stuck with me for the last [TS]

00:33:35   time I watched it and I i remember this [TS]

00:33:37   i watch it again that and you get the [TS]

00:33:39   dog fight in the with the clouds where [TS]

00:33:40   they go into the cloud but and also by [TS]

00:33:42   the way I don't think this is how storms [TS]

00:33:43   work that there's like a cloud and it's [TS]

00:33:47   puffy on the outside but inside it's [TS]

00:33:48   really really bad so we're going to that [TS]

00:33:51   castle in the sky program that is how [TS]

00:33:52   storms work and i guess i mean it's like [TS]

00:33:55   I thunderstorm I guess that's sort of [TS]

00:33:56   how it works but it seems very much like [TS]

00:33:57   it's just kind of a puffy cloud with bad [TS]

00:33:59   stuff inside so you can go inside like [TS]

00:34:01   structure to the wrath of khan basically [TS]

00:34:03   you can go in or you can stay out those [TS]

00:34:05   are your options you can choose and and [TS]

00:34:08   where you want to fight but anyway I [TS]

00:34:11   like the flying stuff being sake is [TS]

00:34:12   obsessed with lying i think the collider [TS]

00:34:14   is beautiful i love that they're [TS]

00:34:15   different he's obviously thought of all [TS]

00:34:17   the different ways you can fly her [TS]

00:34:18   glider like you can fly it from below [TS]

00:34:20   you can fly from above [TS]

00:34:22   you know you could you've got like [TS]

00:34:23   different ways you can do a two-person [TS]

00:34:25   thing where one person lays on the on [TS]

00:34:27   the board and one person's up in a [TS]

00:34:28   little suspender strap thing here's how [TS]

00:34:30   you landed you can also jump off of it [TS]

00:34:32   while you're moving towards something [TS]

00:34:34   and fly and and and crash into it which [TS]

00:34:38   is a maneuver she uses late in the movie [TS]

00:34:39   it's just falling with style [TS]

00:34:41   there's a lot of lying yeah it's [TS]

00:34:43   interesting to compare the animation of [TS]

00:34:45   somebody who's super competent at flying [TS]

00:34:48   with the keys animation where she's just [TS]

00:34:50   awful added yeah but and both of them [TS]

00:34:52   look dangerous like when she you know [TS]

00:34:53   says oh can you can you bring the the oh [TS]

00:34:55   my eyeball shell home it's really hard [TS]

00:34:57   for me to fly with eventually ass off a [TS]

00:34:59   cliff hanging to the bottom of water [TS]

00:35:00   flips around the front of it to get onto [TS]

00:35:02   it's like she's not really showing off [TS]

00:35:05   but you're just like you watch you doing [TS]

00:35:07   like maybe just all right now she's not [TS]

00:35:10   weighed down with that things you can do [TS]

00:35:11   the stop points but she's like a kid [TS]

00:35:13   who's who's put a lot of time into Lake [TS]

00:35:16   learning how to skateboard or you know [TS]

00:35:18   whatever like she's you can tell like is [TS]

00:35:21   very evident that she's put a lot of [TS]

00:35:23   time into doing this and from that [TS]

00:35:25   we can extrapolate even further that [TS]

00:35:27   she's done a lot of exploring and and I [TS]

00:35:30   think that's a really cool little detail [TS]

00:35:33   that it's not you know it's one of those [TS]

00:35:36   subtle things and that kind of speaks to [TS]

00:35:38   who she is and what she does a lot more [TS]

00:35:42   than you know that x position would be [TS]

00:35:44   if it's like well this is my seventh day [TS]

00:35:46   out this week and we have this [TS]

00:35:49   experience we see her being an expert [TS]

00:35:52   ya can't be safe on a skateboard mr. I [TS]

00:35:56   should we talk about the fox squirrel we [TS]

00:35:59   mentioned it go mentioned mention the [TS]

00:36:01   fox squirrel earlier she gets a fox [TS]

00:36:03   world the Fox who looks I i wrote down [TS]

00:36:05   or pokemon one of those and jobs and it [TS]

00:36:09   bites her and she doesn't really is a [TS]

00:36:11   ratchet and then it hangs on her [TS]

00:36:12   shoulder for the rest of it in fact at [TS]

00:36:14   one point she's like been flung [TS]

00:36:16   somewhere and has flung in the air and [TS]

00:36:18   she's fallen to the ground she may be [TS]

00:36:20   dead but he's still like hanging around [TS]

00:36:22   by her which I thought was I thought was [TS]

00:36:24   interesting he's very easy way to get [TS]

00:36:26   down her shirt yeah clearly as her magic [TS]

00:36:29   shirt that protects him from all over [TS]

00:36:31   all injury in flames and antioxidants [TS]

00:36:33   antioxidants right [TS]

00:36:35   no he's he's he's very special anyway [TS]

00:36:37   this is a mascot he doesn't talk like g [TS]

00:36:40   like Gigi but yeah he's fanservice and [TS]

00:36:43   he's there too busy cute and he's there [TS]

00:36:44   to to reveal her character very early in [TS]

00:36:48   the movie to show how you know that [TS]

00:36:50   she's gonna let the thing by her and say [TS]

00:36:52   see is no reason to be afraid and then [TS]

00:36:53   he feels bad like your finger and it's [TS]

00:36:55   adorable [TS]

00:36:56   yeah he's there because it's an anime [TS]

00:36:57   that's named slightly a children like [TS]

00:36:59   it's just one of those things that's [TS]

00:37:01   kind of required and is not many other [TS]

00:37:03   there's not many other cute animals [TS]

00:37:05   moving the body cute like even the [TS]

00:37:07   babydome borderline right right now i [TS]

00:37:11   love it i mean of all of the the many [TS]

00:37:13   anime things I've seen with adorable [TS]

00:37:15   animals i think it was probably my [TS]

00:37:17   number one favorite foremost most cute [TS]

00:37:19   and most the one that I would most like [TS]

00:37:21   a stuffed like plush figure of for [TS]

00:37:24   myself I have a little um almost I don't [TS]

00:37:27   know if I'd say steampunk but I mean one [TS]

00:37:29   of the vibes that I could have this [TS]

00:37:30   movie too is that this is like dreams of [TS]

00:37:32   Sky Pirates and stuff like that right [TS]

00:37:35   its daring to in the high in the sky is [TS]

00:37:37   and that's castle in the sky [TS]

00:37:38   thing and we'll know what this really is [TS]

00:37:40   it will it well music he's got enough to [TS]

00:37:42   spare but you we get here we got that we [TS]

00:37:44   got the board they're boarding the ships [TS]

00:37:46   and she's flying around and I feel like [TS]

00:37:48   that the fox squirrel on the shoulder [TS]

00:37:50   thing it is a little like a pirate [TS]

00:37:52   parrot it needs just gives her a little [TS]

00:37:53   bit more of a like I'm a dashing like i [TS]

00:37:56   am here and I also have a creature on my [TS]

00:37:58   shoulder because I could do that i'm [TS]

00:38:00   that cool so that gives us some cute [TS]

00:38:03   moments like you see you know there's a [TS]

00:38:04   shot of her that she's just lying down [TS]

00:38:06   and then suddenly like he just pokes up [TS]

00:38:08   out of her hair out of nowhere that [TS]

00:38:09   those one of the most charming moments [TS]

00:38:11   of the movie for me it's just cute and [TS]

00:38:12   nobody reacts to it there's a dirty the [TS]

00:38:15   moment worried emerges and NP she's [TS]

00:38:17   talking to people and it's very serious [TS]

00:38:18   and they're like nobodies like at [TS]

00:38:20   there's an animal in your hair nope it's [TS]

00:38:21   fine whatever get a fox squirrel they do [TS]

00:38:24   that [TS]

00:38:24   and speaking of genres that this movie [TS]

00:38:26   evokes with the Pirates in the sky think [TS]

00:38:28   it's definitely one but that the entire [TS]

00:38:29   movie speaking of you know eighties and [TS]

00:38:31   stuff is just as with so much anime is [TS]

00:38:34   soaked in the the eighties Cold War [TS]

00:38:37   mentality on top of the normal anime [TS]

00:38:40   we're basically every Japanese animation [TS]

00:38:43   is in some way that the subtext or theme [TS]

00:38:46   is in some way related to nuclear bombs [TS]

00:38:48   going off because Japan is the only [TS]

00:38:50   country that has ever been nuked now in [TS]

00:38:52   anger everything they make after that [TS]

00:38:54   has if an anime think as it's an [TS]

00:38:56   incredible extent so this thing the [TS]

00:38:58   whole seven days of fire and the opening [TS]

00:39:00   credits against we have the giants [TS]

00:39:01   walking with the sticks the top of their [TS]

00:39:02   heads are ICBM cones you know like it's [TS]

00:39:05   it's not subtle at all [TS]

00:39:07   you rarely is an anime subtle later in [TS]

00:39:09   the movie will see a mushroom cloud [TS]

00:39:10   surprises and weird for anime it's in [TS]

00:39:13   every anime like you can't but that's [TS]

00:39:14   this jar this is a post-apocalyptic one [TS]

00:39:16   so of course they're gonna do that and [TS]

00:39:17   this has the same totoro ask thing where [TS]

00:39:21   you can choose to believe that these [TS]

00:39:24   people thousand years later have [TS]

00:39:26   conceptualized the seven days of fire as [TS]

00:39:29   if they were giant cone headed people [TS]

00:39:31   like smashing cities with their you know [TS]

00:39:33   right but then later the movie you see [TS]

00:39:35   one you like [TS]

00:39:36   oh I guess they were actually people [TS]

00:39:38   like that is it you don't like that is [TS]

00:39:41   that sort of you depending on how you [TS]

00:39:43   choose to to think of it like but it's [TS]

00:39:45   but it's not it's not subtle in any way [TS]

00:39:47   and [TS]

00:39:48   the the overall kind of like what what [TS]

00:39:51   other live action genre has been into I [TS]

00:39:55   think it feels like a mad max-style [TS]

00:39:57   thing you mentioned steampunk Mad Max [TS]

00:39:59   and I had a big mac / when at one point [TS]

00:40:01   the subtitles of knowledge is a no-go [TS]

00:40:04   says who made such a terrible mess of [TS]

00:40:06   the world and I do an immediate flash of [TS]

00:40:08   Mad Max fury road who killed the world [TS]

00:40:10   have that in my new my notes right here [TS]

00:40:12   who killed the world i love that moment [TS]

00:40:14   yeah hey Johnny I you don't wanna know [TS]

00:40:15   about you you love post-apocalyptic [TS]

00:40:17   movies i do and especially i love the [TS]

00:40:22   eighties variety where nuclear war [TS]

00:40:24   that's good old-fashioned apocalypse an [TS]

00:40:25   old-timey about that's what that's what [TS]

00:40:27   I grew up on dharna that's right let's [TS]

00:40:29   analyze this is me I'm hot lips right [TS]

00:40:32   and it would have been a nuke everything [TS]

00:40:34   and everything will be gone and it's all [TS]

00:40:36   about like humans using really big [TS]

00:40:38   weapons and when everything's gone you [TS]

00:40:40   get to wipe the slate clean and start [TS]

00:40:41   over and you get to decide how that's [TS]

00:40:43   going to look in this world looks like [TS]

00:40:44   bugs yeah yeah i think it I think John [TS]

00:40:46   and I have talked before about how we [TS]

00:40:48   are both suckers fourth post apocalyptic [TS]

00:40:50   stuff and I guess you know we already [TS]

00:40:52   talked about the stand i think it [TS]

00:40:53   diseases is my apocalypse but i also [TS]

00:40:56   appreciate this cold war-style and that [TS]

00:40:58   was I think what drew me to the movie in [TS]

00:41:01   the first place the first time I saw it [TS]

00:41:02   way back when I was in college and I [TS]

00:41:04   just it was interesting to see [TS]

00:41:07   especially at that time not knowing as [TS]

00:41:09   much about anime to see the darkness of [TS]

00:41:12   the post-apocalypse idea meshed with [TS]

00:41:15   such a bright and generally cheerful [TS]

00:41:17   kind of children's type film and the you [TS]

00:41:21   know good kind of putting those two [TS]

00:41:23   things together there's a little bit of [TS]

00:41:24   a Frisian that really works for me as a [TS]

00:41:26   viewer it's like taking you know two [TS]

00:41:28   great tastes that I wouldn't have [TS]

00:41:29   thought would taste great together but [TS]

00:41:31   actually do and I sneak in is really [TS]

00:41:33   grim moments like I've noticed this in [TS]

00:41:35   the recent years that I hadn't noticed [TS]

00:41:36   for the first many years I saw she's on [TS]

00:41:38   the the watched that the ship where [TS]

00:41:41   she's a captive and she gets saved by [TS]

00:41:43   the women and they replace her in her [TS]

00:41:44   cell and everything right and she did [TS]

00:41:46   they smuggle her out with the dress and [TS]

00:41:47   she goes into the room with the women [TS]

00:41:49   and the children and I think there were [TS]

00:41:51   some in there with him to like and what [TS]

00:41:53   they have in that room when like the [TS]

00:41:55   battle and Susan the thing what what [TS]

00:41:57   they have in that room is they have a [TS]

00:41:58   giant bomb so basically when those guys [TS]

00:42:00   finally get through the door [TS]

00:42:01   we're gonna set off this bomb and kill [TS]

00:42:03   ourselves and them like that's they're [TS]

00:42:05   basically using you know terrorist [TS]

00:42:07   suicide last resort [TS]

00:42:08   you're not going to take us live tax in [TS]

00:42:10   the room with all the women and the [TS]

00:42:11   children and it's it's in passing and it [TS]

00:42:13   goes by quickly but you're like if you [TS]

00:42:15   really think about what what life is [TS]

00:42:17   like for the people living in this world [TS]

00:42:18   it's pretty bad like your town is [TS]

00:42:21   probably going to be swallowed up by the [TS]

00:42:22   toxic jungle you could be killed at any [TS]

00:42:24   time many people there's no real law to [TS]

00:42:25   speak of its survival of the fittest the [TS]

00:42:27   future of entire city's entire fairly [TS]

00:42:29   large cities and people's and families [TS]

00:42:32   at it is you know a moment away from [TS]

00:42:34   being destroyed by so many things and [TS]

00:42:36   everything is so grim that everyone in [TS]

00:42:38   the room seems grimly determined to blow [TS]

00:42:40   themselves up like like it's no big and [TS]

00:42:42   she's just sort of like walking through [TS]

00:42:43   this story and it's just think of how [TS]

00:42:45   many people died you know it's this is [TS]

00:42:47   not a nice world but it i guess it's [TS]

00:42:49   normalized because they have never known [TS]

00:42:50   any other way [TS]

00:43:37   [Music] [TS]

00:43:39   I i have to say that this is that coming [TS]

00:43:43   coming from the cold war-era if you [TS]

00:43:48   described like a message movie from the [TS]

00:43:51   mid eighties and or or let me put it [TS]

00:43:54   another way if you'd said hey Jason [TS]

00:43:56   imagine a message movie from the [TS]

00:43:58   eighties what were the messages be i [TS]

00:44:00   would probably say violence is bad [TS]

00:44:03   protect the environment [TS]

00:44:06   take care be nice to animals and protect [TS]

00:44:08   the environment don't hurt each other [TS]

00:44:11   people want two people want to destroy [TS]

00:44:13   the world [TS]

00:44:14   so you've got to fight against using [TS]

00:44:16   yourself and and be yourself right [TS]

00:44:18   I so I I had a few moments in this room [TS]

00:44:20   like III get the drugs and don't just [TS]

00:44:23   say no stay in school did I I just there [TS]

00:44:26   are there are a few moments in here [TS]

00:44:28   where it is so artfully done that I like [TS]

00:44:31   it but at the same time this is uh what [TS]

00:44:35   seems i think from the perspective of [TS]

00:44:36   2016 kind of innocent in its take care [TS]

00:44:42   of animals be nice to the environment [TS]

00:44:45   and don't blow things up violently but [TS]

00:44:48   that isn't sort of like those are the [TS]

00:44:50   themes of this and it sort of sweet now [TS]

00:44:52   when I think about it but again it did [TS]

00:44:54   strike me as being a little bit [TS]

00:44:56   reminiscent of sort of an after-school [TS]

00:44:58   special [TS]

00:44:59   and that's why i love it see all the [TS]

00:45:01   other people in the movie all the other [TS]

00:45:03   groups are not on that page [TS]

00:45:05   none of those groups sort of learned the [TS]

00:45:06   lessons that you were just of course not [TS]

00:45:08   none of them really know them really [TS]

00:45:09   learn oh hey we shouldn't use the super [TS]

00:45:11   weapons during a few select individuals [TS]

00:45:13   realize it but pretty much everyone else [TS]

00:45:15   in this movie is trying to do what it [TS]

00:45:17   takes to stay alive even if it involves [TS]

00:45:18   killing the entire other city or kingdom [TS]

00:45:20   or whatever even the people in her [TS]

00:45:22   village are not really on the [TS]

00:45:24   high-minded idea on now we've all [TS]

00:45:25   learned that we shouldn't use super they [TS]

00:45:27   don't get all these people out of their [TS]

00:45:28   village they go back to their farming [TS]

00:45:29   right and there it's not you know and [TS]

00:45:31   they're willing to fight them for their [TS]

00:45:33   not like oh there there is no one here [TS]

00:45:35   espousing a pacifist philosophy there is [TS]

00:45:36   no one here with high-minded ideals [TS]

00:45:38   about the environment now [TS]

00:45:39   miyazaki himself I don't put that in the [TS]

00:45:41   eighties miyazaki himself is obsessed [TS]

00:45:43   with like the environment and pollution [TS]

00:45:45   that's a thread that runs through all [TS]

00:45:45   the movies and gets more and more [TS]

00:45:47   preaching about that as you go on even [TS]

00:45:48   like in the the modern movies like [TS]

00:45:49   spirited away [TS]

00:45:51   he's gonna hammer that in the middle of [TS]

00:45:52   the movie for like 10-15 minutes so you [TS]

00:45:54   get it like a ponyo you know great about [TS]

00:45:56   that the junction like ponyo that's [TS]

00:45:58   that's him [TS]

00:45:59   that is not that's not the eighties [TS]

00:46:01   that's him he is big on we're destroying [TS]

00:46:03   but in it but in the eighties this was [TS]

00:46:06   these were the messages in the eighties [TS]

00:46:07   I message of the eighties was we're all [TS]

00:46:09   going to blow ourselves up if we don't [TS]

00:46:10   be careful if we don't we don't get our [TS]

00:46:11   heads together and realize that you know [TS]

00:46:13   if escalation in a world where you have [TS]

00:46:15   the 1i weapons to destroy the world will [TS]

00:46:17   eventually end up with the world being [TS]

00:46:18   destroyed that is totally the eighties [TS]

00:46:19   theme and the theme of all those movies [TS]

00:46:21   is we should not blow ourselves up and [TS]

00:46:24   here's how easily we could do so if we [TS]

00:46:26   just let a couple of hotheads being [TS]

00:46:27   charged and have these weapons we should [TS]

00:46:29   not blow ourselves up we shouldn't have [TS]

00:46:31   these weapons that you know but [TS]

00:46:32   Pandora's box is open so be real careful [TS]

00:46:35   we don't blow ourselves up and yes that [TS]

00:46:37   that was a lot of things but in this one [TS]

00:46:38   I like the fact that that even at the [TS]

00:46:41   end you get the idea that you know and [TS]

00:46:44   also gonna need to learn this lesson she [TS]

00:46:46   already knew it and everyone else didn't [TS]

00:46:48   learn the lesson right there just gonna [TS]

00:46:49   be like I would go back to our village [TS]

00:46:50   and I was alive or whatever and this [TS]

00:46:53   whole same thing will happen again and [TS]

00:46:54   that's one of my questions on repeated [TS]

00:46:55   viewings they they show a couple [TS]

00:46:57   flashbacks of the own like every time [TS]

00:46:58   the humans have tried to like fight back [TS]

00:47:00   the toxic jungle the only will come out [TS]

00:47:02   and trampled to cross them and during [TS]

00:47:04   those things they show the owners [TS]

00:47:05   trampling like skyscrapers [TS]

00:47:06   yeah just like xion in the matrix where [TS]

00:47:08   it like so civilization has been rebuilt [TS]

00:47:10   three separate times in this thousand [TS]

00:47:13   years up to the part where you have [TS]

00:47:14   skyscrapers and the owner like and no [TS]

00:47:16   ahead and wipe that was what I thought [TS]

00:47:18   yeah look at the cheat sheet has been [TS]

00:47:20   built up enough that they have a giant [TS]

00:47:21   dome and it ends up getting trampled by [TS]

00:47:24   the only and then the sports spread I [TS]

00:47:26   mean they're able to build these [TS]

00:47:27   technological airplanes I mean they've [TS]

00:47:29   got flight right lakes really well and [TS]

00:47:32   again they're talking about at that [TS]

00:47:33   point how the the toxic jungle or the [TS]

00:47:36   sea of decay has spread over the years [TS]

00:47:38   and so I suspect what's what's happened [TS]

00:47:40   is that these are some pockets of [TS]

00:47:42   civilization or at least cities that [TS]

00:47:44   have survived through the thousand years [TS]

00:47:47   and then gradually get destroyed over [TS]

00:47:49   time as the as the sea spreads in the [TS]

00:47:51   homes kind of what but it's the hubris [TS]

00:47:53   it's not that serious spreading it the [TS]

00:47:55   the humans to get all up in there like [TS]

00:47:56   we have this big city we've got [TS]

00:47:58   skyscrapers why do we tolerate this big [TS]

00:47:59   insects in these no-go zones why don't [TS]

00:48:01   we take our big weapons go with [TS]

00:48:02   and blow the crap out of them and every [TS]

00:48:03   time they try to do that these big homes [TS]

00:48:05   come out and go and and and this match [TS]

00:48:07   their bodies into their cities until [TS]

00:48:08   they're dead and then their bodies [TS]

00:48:10   become breeding ground for the next four [TS]

00:48:12   so there previously safe city is now all [TS]

00:48:14   toxic jungle right and so that's that's [TS]

00:48:16   the the was like his whole thing of [TS]

00:48:18   being in harmony with nature and [TS]

00:48:19   everything was just his personal theme [TS]

00:48:21   and also a big japanese theme of I you [TS]

00:48:24   know why couldn't you just been happy in [TS]

00:48:25   their City they would've been fine but [TS]

00:48:26   eventually they feel like no men must [TS]

00:48:28   dominate the earth and you know miyazaki [TS]

00:48:30   is taking the righteous hand of his home [TS]

00:48:32   and saying no you don't don't fight [TS]

00:48:35   against nature nature will always win [TS]

00:48:36   and then the later lesson to see this [TS]

00:48:39   toxic drug was actually doing something [TS]

00:48:40   trying to clean up a stupid world that [TS]

00:48:42   you ruined people such as leave it alone [TS]

00:48:43   if you don't fight with it and you can [TS]

00:48:45   live in harmony with it in the valley [TS]

00:48:47   you'll be fine if you fight against it [TS]

00:48:48   it's all going to end in tears [TS]

00:48:50   if only they could all have seen that [TS]

00:48:51   tapestry with the prophecy on it but [TS]

00:48:53   these all could have been avoided [TS]

00:48:55   well the prophecy was the the guy in [TS]

00:48:57   blue with the beard is going to come and [TS]

00:48:58   save everybody on a big golden field [TS]

00:49:00   it's just it's just a run-of-the-mill [TS]

00:49:01   like Savior sort of thing and and I the [TS]

00:49:04   first time I saw it I didn't take much [TS]

00:49:06   notice how many times you co this you [TS]

00:49:08   know the legend of the Savior is going [TS]

00:49:09   to come and save us or whatever and of [TS]

00:49:11   course it shows it dude [TS]

00:49:12   like why wouldn't it you know because [TS]

00:49:13   that's the world that she lives in right [TS]

00:49:15   and even though it's like well does it [TS]

00:49:17   goes the main character and you know [TS]

00:49:18   it's gonna come through but when I was a [TS]

00:49:20   kid anyway totally work for me lately in [TS]

00:49:22   that it didn't even occur to me that she [TS]

00:49:24   would be the fulfillment of this [TS]

00:49:25   prophecy I'm like so many other movies [TS]

00:49:26   that it's clear from seen one this is [TS]

00:49:28   the prophecy main character will fulfill [TS]

00:49:30   I think you know we're kind of taught [TS]

00:49:32   that the girls don't do that so it would [TS]

00:49:35   be [TS]

00:49:35   oh yeah of course this man is going to [TS]

00:49:37   come and maybe nautical help him a [TS]

00:49:38   little bit and then she'll get a scrape [TS]

00:49:39   and he'll have to come rescue her and [TS]

00:49:42   then that'll be that'll be the point of [TS]

00:49:44   the story but it's not which is amazing [TS]

00:49:47   and you know going back to star wars and [TS]

00:49:49   talking about Ray that's what I loved [TS]

00:49:51   about star wars 2 and they have to show [TS]

00:49:54   it to you there because it because it's [TS]

00:49:55   selling conventional they have to show [TS]

00:49:56   you look bearded guy rain and more [TS]

00:49:59   friend art da get kids 0 because you [TS]

00:50:01   don't like I mean I guess that when i [TS]

00:50:03   saw the kid didn't occur to me and they [TS]

00:50:05   need to do that and I was glad they did [TS]

00:50:06   that it's like oh all right now I see it [TS]

00:50:09   yep thanks I do really like the fact [TS]

00:50:10   that the reason she's in a blue outfit [TS]

00:50:12   is because her pink dress has been [TS]

00:50:14   soaked in all [TS]

00:50:15   blood doesn't like where she rips the oh [TS]

00:50:19   my want to talk about them the sandworms [TS]

00:50:21   of this piece the ohm I there they're uh [TS]

00:50:25   they're I I'm not cute but i kinda like [TS]

00:50:30   I kind of love them there be this big [TS]

00:50:31   segmented dome with lots of eyes [TS]

00:50:37   slugging roly-polies and friend [TS]

00:50:41   tentacles than you usually do they are [TS]

00:50:43   very friendly tentacles and also there's [TS]

00:50:45   a scene i wrote I wrote on my notes that [TS]

00:50:48   i can't decide if Nazca really thinks [TS]

00:50:51   the own can understand her when she [TS]

00:50:53   talks to him or if they're just talking [TS]

00:50:55   she's like she would talk to a cat like [TS]

00:50:57   they can understand that thailand's [TS]

00:50:59   that's another thing that I think it [TS]

00:51:00   reveals itself i repeat viewings they [TS]

00:51:02   mentioned many times like when the bugs [TS]

00:51:04   in the village and the guys like we got [TS]

00:51:05   to shoot the other guys know you know [TS]

00:51:07   the young young guys like let's kill it [TS]

00:51:08   in the older guys like no no if you kill [TS]

00:51:10   it if we kill even one bug like the [TS]

00:51:13   consequence there's no telling how we'd [TS]

00:51:15   suffer for a single insects death i [TS]

00:51:17   wrote that town today and so there's an [TS]

00:51:19   acknowledgement and with all the [TS]

00:51:21   backstory about the ohm and like [TS]

00:51:22   carrying the baby and the homecoming and [TS]

00:51:24   destroy the city [TS]

00:51:25   these are not dumb animals like that [TS]

00:51:27   they that they understand the concept of [TS]

00:51:29   revenge that one of them dies they're [TS]

00:51:31   going to tell each other about it and [TS]

00:51:32   come get you all through the toxic [TS]

00:51:34   jungle-like word spreads they're [TS]

00:51:36   communicating i mean they're not [TS]

00:51:37   yeah I'm not sure I'm not sure they can [TS]

00:51:39   understand what she's saying to them [TS]

00:51:40   when she talks to the babydome and [TS]

00:51:42   trying to take care of it but I'm not [TS]

00:51:45   the baby one but they are they are [TS]

00:51:46   established as essentially magical [TS]

00:51:48   because you've got the glowy thing [TS]

00:51:49   essentially are healing her and you you [TS]

00:51:51   imagine that they are communicating on a [TS]

00:51:53   level in which they are communicating [TS]

00:51:54   and this much more sophisticated way and [TS]

00:51:57   like that these these these animals all [TS]

00:51:59   the bugs but especially the ohms are [TS]

00:52:00   much smarter than like say an elephant [TS]

00:52:02   or any other kind of animal they're [TS]

00:52:03   smarter the dog smarter than a dolphin [TS]

00:52:06   they're essentially could be the new [TS]

00:52:07   dominant life form on the planet [TS]

00:52:09   maybe they're not quite as smart as [TS]

00:52:10   humans or maybe they're just you know [TS]

00:52:12   they're arranging themselves in a [TS]

00:52:14   different way but if you think of them [TS]

00:52:16   as just big charging Buffalo you're [TS]

00:52:18   missing a lot of the the thrust of the [TS]

00:52:21   plot of the movie that the idea [TS]

00:52:22   is that they are they are intelligent [TS]

00:52:24   was supposed to give another ass angle [TS]

00:52:26   to the aspect of like the humans who [TS]

00:52:28   hate the bugs I'm gonna destroy them and [TS]

00:52:29   just treat them as vermin it's like well [TS]

00:52:31   not really vermin like they're they're [TS]

00:52:33   kind of your competition for ownership [TS]

00:52:35   of this planet going forward I don't see [TS]

00:52:37   that at all i see that pretty much [TS]

00:52:39   everything they do could be pretty much [TS]

00:52:40   chalked up to instinct yeah the charging [TS]

00:52:43   the red eyes [TS]

00:52:45   I mean but if you need more than [TS]

00:52:46   instinct to know that a an insect in the [TS]

00:52:48   valley has been injured let's go get [TS]

00:52:49   them [TS]

00:52:50   yeah but I think it's that they [TS]

00:52:51   represent the ecosystem like they're [TS]

00:52:53   they're one of the forces of the e of [TS]

00:52:55   the ecology of the planet and they they [TS]

00:52:59   are giant dead trees that dropped yeah [TS]

00:53:01   they there are cleansing force they get [TS]

00:53:04   angry than they that but they're almost [TS]

00:53:05   like the like the wind to their force of [TS]

00:53:08   nature that is part of this larger [TS]

00:53:10   environment that they're in i'm not sure [TS]

00:53:13   that the ohms are gonna be in a building [TS]

00:53:16   cities anytime soon but i think they are [TS]

00:53:18   part of the part of the the ecology of [TS]

00:53:21   the planet and and when you do things [TS]

00:53:23   that are bad they come and smash you and [TS]

00:53:25   building cities but just the idea that [TS]

00:53:27   they have communication that word [TS]

00:53:29   spreads among they don't have written [TS]

00:53:30   like straw and clearly have right there [TS]

00:53:33   and more than more than just pheromones [TS]

00:53:35   like the idea that hey they killed one [TS]

00:53:37   of our guys over in that village so [TS]

00:53:39   let's all get together and go destroy [TS]

00:53:40   that village right or let's all go to [TS]

00:53:42   get together and destroy that town and [TS]

00:53:45   sacrifice are so you get the idea that [TS]

00:53:46   they don't understand that they are [TS]

00:53:48   sacrificing themselves they're just not [TS]

00:53:49   mindlessly I i think the knowledge [TS]

00:53:51   smarter than they are [TS]

00:53:53   I don't get that at all yeah i totally [TS]

00:53:54   agree they are the force of nature type [TS]

00:53:56   thing but I i think that they are there [TS]

00:53:59   are the clear successor students because [TS]

00:54:01   that's one of the questions in the [TS]

00:54:02   movies like that i think music voices at [TS]

00:54:04   some point like will will the you know [TS]

00:54:06   the the sea of decay spread like our [TS]

00:54:09   arguments going to make it essentially [TS]

00:54:10   and I feel like if they don't homes are [TS]

00:54:12   clearly the top of the intelligence [TS]

00:54:15   chain of the various bugs that are in [TS]

00:54:17   there and they seem very thoughtful and [TS]

00:54:18   they seem very social and they seem to [TS]

00:54:21   care about their young like me what what [TS]

00:54:23   other animal of any intelligence level a [TS]

00:54:26   massive the entire herd to go after one [TS]

00:54:28   baby that never happens any society [TS]

00:54:30   except for something as sophisticated as [TS]

00:54:31   humans because other you know other big [TS]

00:54:33   animals don't care about your baby this [TS]

00:54:35   I'm not going to gather all the guys [TS]

00:54:36   let's all get that baby that never [TS]

00:54:38   happens I feeling well no that's that's [TS]

00:54:39   basically what is effectively is that if [TS]

00:54:41   the baby's being killed [TS]

00:54:43   that's like once poor on a tree in the [TS]

00:54:45   valley of the wind it indicates that you [TS]

00:54:48   know there are humans here and the [TS]

00:54:50   destructors of the planet are here and [TS]

00:54:51   therefore that's where we need to go and [TS]

00:54:53   that's what we need to crush enough that [TS]

00:54:55   their plot reason we didn't i didn't [TS]

00:54:57   read intelligence into it as much as [TS]

00:54:59   sort of a kind of almost mystical wisdom [TS]

00:55:01   so they were yes they they were sort of [TS]

00:55:04   the the speakers for the the from the [TS]

00:55:07   parliament in a very yeah in a very in a [TS]

00:55:10   very sort of just like mystical and wise [TS]

00:55:12   way I didn't feel like there was a whole [TS]

00:55:13   lot of specific piece by piece thought [TS]

00:55:17   going on but they had some sort of you [TS]

00:55:20   know empathy almost that they were able [TS]

00:55:22   to communicate with nasik Nazca are [TS]

00:55:24   actually that she was able to [TS]

00:55:25   communicate with them to get her point [TS]

00:55:27   across because she's she's got this [TS]

00:55:29   crazy crazy it i don't know if it's a [TS]

00:55:31   skill i don't know if it's supposed to [TS]

00:55:32   be some sort of like low-level telepathy [TS]

00:55:34   or if she's just that good at at exuding [TS]

00:55:37   you know but the only firm and and [TS]

00:55:42   they're also like compassionate to so I [TS]

00:55:46   think that can do it maybe I'd agree [TS]

00:55:48   with Erica in terms of like kind of the [TS]

00:55:50   the wisdom of the earth or like whatever [TS]

00:55:53   that is but like once they calm down [TS]

00:55:56   it's like oh wait let's assess the [TS]

00:55:58   situation a little bit what's happening [TS]

00:55:59   no someone someone is hurt and clearly [TS]

00:56:01   they weren't this person wasn't [TS]

00:56:03   hell-bent on destroying us [TS]

00:56:06   you know what can we do to help them and [TS]

00:56:07   yeah I can kind of like that theory of [TS]

00:56:11   the baby the baby tells them this girl [TS]

00:56:13   helped me right baby says hey this lady [TS]

00:56:16   who just trampled and probably basically [TS]

00:56:18   killed the idea is that the babydome [TS]

00:56:20   tells the other ones this person helped [TS]

00:56:22   me so bring her back to life with your [TS]

00:56:24   magic [TS]

00:56:25   yeah well and I mean that in itself to [TS]

00:56:26   me the spokes that that they are more [TS]

00:56:29   than just what the other bugs are like [TS]

00:56:31   the fact that they are able to recognize [TS]

00:56:34   regardless of the mechanism of them [TS]

00:56:35   learning that fact that they were able [TS]

00:56:37   to recognize that there is a person who [TS]

00:56:39   helped one of their own and it and [TS]

00:56:42   because of that they can you cool down [TS]

00:56:43   and go from red to blue [TS]

00:56:45   there's a dream sequence I at one point [TS]

00:56:48   when she's when she goes down in the [TS]

00:56:50   quicksand that I just I I all I really [TS]

00:56:54   noticed that i liked that the dream [TS]

00:56:56   sequences done in a different style of [TS]

00:56:58   art then the rest of your haiti's a [TS]

00:57:01   sketchy animation style that was popular [TS]

00:57:03   than not so much they take on me video [TS]

00:57:05   things like I was going to say the [TS]

00:57:07   singer bahaha does not appear in this [TS]

00:57:09   stream secrets but he could far as you [TS]

00:57:11   know you and slowed-down frame rate and [TS]

00:57:13   it has i think what is probably the most [TS]

00:57:15   overtly phallic shot in all of miyazaki [TS]

00:57:20   movies when she is riding on my guess [TS]

00:57:23   the horse or whatever with her father [TS]

00:57:25   and they're showing a kind of from her [TS]

00:57:26   perspective what is it like to be on [TS]

00:57:28   there in the hilt of his sword is like [TS]

00:57:30   it you know poking up and shaped in a [TS]

00:57:32   very phallic matter moving back and [TS]

00:57:34   forth as in like she's in the idea of [TS]

00:57:36   the father is impossibly large as hands [TS]

00:57:38   are huge and it's just a very you know I [TS]

00:57:40   am a small little person hears this big [TS]

00:57:42   man who is dominating my life [TS]

00:57:44   you think that's worse than the scene of [TS]

00:57:45   the ostriches licking her face with your [TS]

00:57:47   enormous pink tongues [TS]

00:57:49   yes yes I don't know maniacally I but [TS]

00:57:52   yeah that whole scene with the baby home [TS]

00:57:54   I mean it's another character moment and [TS]

00:57:56   it's got an a an adorable song haha is [TS]

00:57:59   that a flash packer are pure dream [TS]

00:58:00   sequence [TS]

00:58:01   I was trying to decide that the baby on [TS]

00:58:03   when I was a flashback i'm assuming the [TS]

00:58:05   app is I took it as basically I'm her [TS]

00:58:09   life flashing before her eyes and her [TS]

00:58:12   remembering that happening a long time [TS]

00:58:13   ago and also I as i mentioned earlier i [TS]

00:58:16   think the quicksand thing is dumb [TS]

00:58:19   that's like oh no we are dying in [TS]

00:58:22   quicksand no and then she wakes up was [TS]

00:58:24   like oh and then we emerged without like [TS]

00:58:27   falling from the ceiling of this giant [TS]

00:58:29   thing and dying we emerged in a huge [TS]

00:58:32   cave of that's good and that all the [TS]

00:58:35   water is pure in the air is pure every [TS]

00:58:38   time I've seen this movie I thought come [TS]

00:58:40   on how does that work that's like [TS]

00:58:41   apparently in this world one can fall [TS]

00:58:43   600 feet and not die which is why [TS]

00:58:46   they're so confident they're flying [TS]

00:58:47   because they fell with sand and landed [TS]

00:58:49   on sand which look so soft don't you [TS]

00:58:50   think another mythbuster [TS]

00:58:52   episode can you fall with a bunch of [TS]

00:58:53   sand and land on it and not die from CTE [TS]

00:58:56   I just I just sort of hand waved that [TS]

00:58:59   entire thing away [TS]

00:59:01   there's a reason that there's a dream [TS]

00:59:02   sequence and then she wakes up not [TS]

00:59:04   knowing what happened it's like just [TS]

00:59:05   nevermind it was just this beautiful it [TS]

00:59:08   was so beautiful like the cave and the I [TS]

00:59:10   mean it also didn't make any sense that [TS]

00:59:12   there's sunlight somehow getting down [TS]

00:59:14   there it's so dark in the sea of decay [TS]

00:59:15   to start with right and yet somehow [TS]

00:59:18   there's light coming down infield has [TS]

00:59:19   got more beautifully lit it looks great [TS]

00:59:21   goodness of goodness that does that [TS]

00:59:24   right when you say that the trees they [TS]

00:59:26   soak up the sun light and it spread to [TS]

00:59:28   the top and it falls to the earth as [TS]

00:59:29   light crystals [TS]

00:59:31   yes I am I can accepted this not taste [TS]

00:59:34   really weird but it's good for you it's [TS]

00:59:36   the seed yeah I was a I was very [TS]

00:59:39   relieved when I discovered that Oscar [TS]

00:59:42   was wearing pants because it's not [TS]

00:59:44   immediately clear the left time i watch [TS]

00:59:47   this [TS]

00:59:48   yes it took me a while to sort of figure [TS]

00:59:49   that out and I had to like deposit and [TS]

00:59:51   screen cabins like what is going on here [TS]

00:59:53   so yeah first thing when i started [TS]

00:59:55   watching this with Stephen I was like by [TS]

00:59:57   the way just please note she is in fact [TS]

00:59:59   wearing pants [TS]

00:59:59   wearing pants [TS]

01:00:00   there's like a flesh-colored yeah [TS]

01:00:01   flashcard leggings from the skin of some [TS]

01:00:03   animal right we do still get a lot of [TS]

01:00:06   scenes of her skirt blowing up from [TS]

01:00:07   behind which is open those are tight [TS]

01:00:09   fitting pants [TS]

01:00:10   yeah yep the giant warrior I guess we [TS]

01:00:14   could talk about ya look at that is such [TS]

01:00:17   an anticlimax like this big warrior that [TS]

01:00:19   building up may bring it out before it [TS]

01:00:21   was done cooking and it just falls apart [TS]

01:00:22   just like they said it would but you [TS]

01:00:24   know you got you got to go to or we go [TS]

01:00:26   to war with the warrior you have you [TS]

01:00:28   know that too feels like something that [TS]

01:00:29   somewhat of a missed opportunity that [TS]

01:00:31   would have been a lot more impressive [TS]

01:00:32   had they stretch this out longer and [TS]

01:00:35   multiple movies [TS]

01:00:36   yeah I almost wish it wasn't there [TS]

01:00:39   because it just when I think about the [TS]

01:00:41   movie when I think back on it they never [TS]

01:00:43   remember that it's there anyway it [TS]

01:00:45   clearly doesn't add anything for me [TS]

01:00:46   other than some like flashy lights at [TS]

01:00:48   the end and so I don't it it's a weird [TS]

01:00:52   thing to me [TS]

01:00:53   well it highlights the futility of what [TS]

01:00:55   they're trying to do right i mean [TS]

01:00:56   they're so hell-bent on killing each [TS]

01:00:58   other that there and if they're going to [TS]

01:01:00   go right back to the old ways like if [TS]

01:01:02   you have they don't have access to [TS]

01:01:04   weapons but if you give one of them [TS]

01:01:05   access to weapons immediately just like [TS]

01:01:06   we got to use to kill the other guys [TS]

01:01:08   like this is the first instinct [TS]

01:01:10   it's the fighting over the weapon is the [TS]

01:01:11   reason past these two things are warring [TS]

01:01:13   with each other is all i heard they have [TS]

01:01:14   a weapon we have to go take it from all [TS]

01:01:15   will take a backhaul will use it against [TS]

01:01:17   them and then in the end like they'd be [TS]

01:01:19   used against nature instead of against [TS]

01:01:20   mammals like oh we need to regroup let's [TS]

01:01:22   not fight each other the overcoming [TS]

01:01:24   let's use this big man weapon against [TS]

01:01:26   them and it falls apart because like you [TS]

01:01:28   can't you know you can't fight against [TS]

01:01:29   nature don't even try and they have to [TS]

01:01:31   have the scene where he shoots out a big [TS]

01:01:33   thing it makes a gigantic mushroom cloud [TS]

01:01:34   up boy [TS]

01:01:35   japanese can draw a mushroom clouds like [TS]

01:01:37   nobody's business like very dramatic big [TS]

01:01:39   flash of light and makes no sense that [TS]

01:01:41   he drew a line with this laser and makes [TS]

01:01:42   a mushroom cloud but dammit we have a [TS]

01:01:44   mushroom cloud and it's going to look [TS]

01:01:45   good and it doesn't matter because the [TS]

01:01:47   only keep coming and it means also you [TS]

01:01:48   know you're ruining it you're doing the [TS]

01:01:50   violent thing that could let us to this [TS]

01:01:51   terrible terrible place and that that's [TS]

01:01:54   the message of that firing it although i [TS]

01:01:57   did have that moment of the the [TS]

01:01:59   simplicity of the plot where when it [TS]

01:02:02   needs to not be there anymore it just [TS]

01:02:05   dies and they basically like oh I guess [TS]

01:02:09   it died it turns into orange know which [TS]

01:02:11   is anime anime shorthand for guts [TS]

01:02:13   yeah isn't [TS]

01:02:13   not a unique to miyazaki yeah I just I I [TS]

01:02:16   it's very convenient that it is very [TS]

01:02:18   fearsome weapon until it needs to not be [TS]

01:02:21   anymore [TS]

01:02:22   yeah which probably didn't let it finish [TS]

01:02:23   cooking like it yes it's fun it's like a [TS]

01:02:25   biological weapon and like you know [TS]

01:02:27   they're they're trying to like get it [TS]

01:02:29   back up the fighting strength like you [TS]

01:02:30   can take it out needs to be in the oven [TS]

01:02:31   for 20 more minutes is like no I'm [TS]

01:02:33   taking it out now it's alright well and [TS]

01:02:36   I do feel like that the use of it like [TS]

01:02:38   that by that point Hashanah is very I [TS]

01:02:41   mean she's just sort of but blinded by [TS]

01:02:43   battle rage but I didn't like when she's [TS]

01:02:46   first introduced at the beginning her if [TS]

01:02:49   the way she's going about things is [TS]

01:02:50   really crappy but her motivations are [TS]

01:02:53   actually a understandable it's not like [TS]

01:02:55   she's a mustache twirling villain she [TS]

01:02:57   wants to take the world back for humans [TS]

01:03:00   because you know that the sea of decay [TS]

01:03:02   is an awful thing as far as she knows [TS]

01:03:03   she doesn't know the truth about it [TS]

01:03:04   because she hasn't fallen 600 feet [TS]

01:03:06   through sand so she just wants to to [TS]

01:03:09   help her people and and not just to help [TS]

01:03:11   her people to help the people of the [TS]

01:03:12   valley to and i will i like the idea [TS]

01:03:15   that that I can see things from her [TS]

01:03:17   perspective and and that she's not just [TS]

01:03:20   evil for the sake of of evil and then [TS]

01:03:22   you know she sort of goes the wrong [TS]

01:03:24   direction as things go along and just [TS]

01:03:26   gets more and more fed up and angry and [TS]

01:03:28   just wants to fight fight fight but at [TS]

01:03:30   least at the beginning she was a [TS]

01:03:32   somewhat more interesting character [TS]

01:03:34   she's a pro lady about she basically [TS]

01:03:36   lady about she is a princess mononoke [TS]

01:03:38   the supposed antagonist woman but you [TS]

01:03:41   are forced to you know recognize that [TS]

01:03:45   are at least it you know understand [TS]

01:03:47   where she's coming from because her [TS]

01:03:49   motive she does lots of good things and [TS]

01:03:50   her motivation seem to make sense [TS]

01:03:51   logically she just happens to be on the [TS]

01:03:53   wrong side of the magical world that [TS]

01:03:55   Miyazaki has set up in which you really [TS]

01:03:57   shouldn't go against nature because he's [TS]

01:03:58   writing the story dammit and [TS]

01:03:59   you're gonna lose music is really [TS]

01:04:01   pastoral kind of guy you know the it [TS]

01:04:04   Japan is interesting because it's got [TS]

01:04:05   these incredibly dense urban centers and [TS]

01:04:07   then it's got the countryside and I you [TS]

01:04:10   know I with all of his work i love the [TS]

01:04:13   countryside and I think of skepticism of [TS]

01:04:15   technology and density of of you know [TS]

01:04:20   big cities seems to be a theme that I [TS]

01:04:22   see and so I was thinking of that when [TS]

01:04:25   when I when we get this kind of [TS]

01:04:27   imperialism of the troops coming in and [TS]

01:04:29   saying well we're from the word from [TS]

01:04:30   this being a bigger civilization and [TS]

01:04:32   we're gonna take over you [TS]

01:04:33   quaint little people who live off the [TS]

01:04:34   land here in this special little Valley [TS]

01:04:36   we're gonna we're gonna take over for [TS]

01:04:38   you and I I felt like that was right up [TS]

01:04:41   Miyazaki's ally of saying the these are [TS]

01:04:44   the people who live off the land they [TS]

01:04:46   understood there closer to the earth [TS]

01:04:48   than you are they understand it better [TS]

01:04:49   than you [TS]

01:04:51   it's always going to be better for the [TS]

01:04:53   the small group of people out in the [TS]

01:04:54   countryside than it is for some [TS]

01:04:56   Outsiders from the city who think they [TS]

01:04:58   know better than the people from the [TS]

01:05:00   country and you know this guy I see this [TS]

01:05:02   in key i see this in totoro I mean this [TS]

01:05:04   is something that he does again and [TS]

01:05:06   again when they have the luxury of not [TS]

01:05:08   having been developing their protected [TS]

01:05:09   by the wind and they can afford to not [TS]

01:05:11   have to they don't want to fight wars [TS]

01:05:13   for the people there in this secluded [TS]

01:05:14   Valley they're protected they don't have [TS]

01:05:16   to build defenses against talk jungle [TS]

01:05:18   and are constantly fighting against bugs [TS]

01:05:19   and doing stuff like that it's all like [TS]

01:05:21   they're they're kind of like laid-back [TS]

01:05:23   like we had and then the other ones that [TS]

01:05:24   you imagine the other humans are have a [TS]

01:05:26   much much more difficult struggle [TS]

01:05:28   against nature and so they're all booked [TS]

01:05:30   up in there friday against each other [TS]

01:05:32   and then the valley gets in the middle [TS]

01:05:33   of this like we were just here doing our [TS]

01:05:35   thing and be in our little village and [TS]

01:05:37   you guys come and basically destroyed [TS]

01:05:39   almost the entire thing that the [TS]

01:05:40   burndown three-hundred-year-old forest [TS]

01:05:42   they crashed the plane there friday each [TS]

01:05:43   other's there the then the owner coming [TS]

01:05:45   towards them [TS]

01:05:46   it's not not a good movie for the valley [TS]

01:05:47   and there's all the the bucketheads the [TS]

01:05:50   helmet head sir they're the worst [TS]

01:05:52   that's true you know and even just [TS]

01:05:54   strictly from an aesthetic perspective i [TS]

01:05:56   actually have that my notes to it was a [TS]

01:05:58   really neat just juxtaposition to see [TS]

01:06:00   the the military airplanes all that gray [TS]

01:06:03   metal you know lots of rabbits and stuff [TS]

01:06:05   flying in / this pastoral beauty of the [TS]

01:06:08   valley of the wind and there's such a [TS]

01:06:09   contrast between the two of those and [TS]

01:06:11   made [TS]

01:06:11   that scene even more sort of you know [TS]

01:06:14   heart clutching because like oh no not [TS]

01:06:17   only are they being invaded their being [TS]

01:06:18   invaded in a style that's so completely [TS]

01:06:20   different from the life that we have [TS]

01:06:21   seen them living so far as painful life [TS]

01:06:25   is just better when your primary [TS]

01:06:26   industries our crops and windmills [TS]

01:06:28   well you do wonder if that's sustainable [TS]

01:06:30   like because they do show like when she [TS]

01:06:32   meets up a large Cuba and they're like [TS]

01:06:34   on their way back home there's a bunch [TS]

01:06:36   of windmills and stuff out there and [TS]

01:06:37   you're like so maybe this whole windmill [TS]

01:06:40   being protected by the wind culture used [TS]

01:06:42   to be spread out much farther and like [TS]

01:06:44   this is the last fashion because they're [TS]

01:06:45   wandering through towns that seem to [TS]

01:06:47   have windmills just like there's that [TS]

01:06:49   are close to their home but they're [TS]

01:06:51   totally overrun by toxic jungle in the [TS]

01:06:53   desert and all this other stuff and so [TS]

01:06:54   they're still safe but I mean I got an [TS]

01:06:56   honest question is this is this it for [TS]

01:06:59   humans it will the the sea of decay take [TS]

01:07:01   over everything are we gonna make it [TS]

01:07:04   it's a multi-generational question for [TS]

01:07:07   sure but the answer is not clear [TS]

01:07:09   especially since they haven't really [TS]

01:07:10   done anything to fortify themselves just [TS]

01:07:12   basically relying on the wind and doing [TS]

01:07:14   in a farming to get themselves a 3-2 [TS]

01:07:16   winter I guess another thing that we [TS]

01:07:18   could talk about even briefly is kinda [TS]

01:07:21   we talked about how cool Gnostic is in [TS]

01:07:23   the beginning and how resourceful she is [TS]

01:07:24   and how smart she is but we haven't [TS]

01:07:26   talked about like her little underground [TS]

01:07:27   lair and how she figures out that the [TS]

01:07:31   plants aren't the toxic things it's the [TS]

01:07:33   soil in the water that's toxic and how [TS]

01:07:36   like basically she's motivated to add a [TS]

01:07:40   note like we're not told about any kind [TS]

01:07:43   of school or any kind of scientific [TS]

01:07:45   discovery like obviously they're very [TS]

01:07:48   into aviation and in these cultures but [TS]

01:07:51   we're not really told about like [TS]

01:07:52   scientific theories or biology or [TS]

01:07:55   whatever so she's basically as far as [TS]

01:07:57   I'm concerned he's like learned how to [TS]

01:07:59   science on her own [TS]

01:08:01   it has created like this underground I [TS]

01:08:04   not a greenhouse with this underground [TS]

01:08:07   thing and she's motivated because her [TS]

01:08:11   her father is very sick and then there's [TS]

01:08:13   later there's an old man who's like a [TS]

01:08:15   gnostic is going to figure out what's [TS]

01:08:17   going on and make me better and like so [TS]

01:08:19   so we've we've got this thread [TS]

01:08:21   throughout you know we've got the [TS]

01:08:23   presumably the flashback of her [TS]

01:08:25   with the baby own and and and her like [TS]

01:08:28   crying and clutching it and trying to [TS]

01:08:30   protect it and in like this kind loving [TS]

01:08:33   scientific resourceful young woman and [TS]

01:08:37   how freakin cool and Obama is like no no [TS]

01:08:43   it's all about legends they're going to [TS]

01:08:44   say 10 scientific method I can we can [TS]

01:08:47   figure things out again her village just [TS]

01:08:49   seemed to be all about the science there [TS]

01:08:51   into agriculture fine and somehow [TS]

01:08:53   they've got these planes that you're not [TS]

01:08:54   quite sure how that fits in with the [TS]

01:08:55   rest of stuff that seems way more [TS]

01:08:56   advanced gliders maybe but that gunship [TS]

01:08:58   know where the hell that came from but [TS]

01:09:00   it looks like the style of their village [TS]

01:09:01   but no one else is like you know [TS]

01:09:04   studying crops there like spore resist [TS]

01:09:06   enter doing gene splicing and she's down [TS]

01:09:08   there essentially she's like Isaac [TS]

01:09:10   Newton and mendel you know all rolled [TS]

01:09:12   into one [TS]

01:09:13   well you don't have to do it in secret [TS]

01:09:14   because it's not like a supported [TS]

01:09:16   activities not actually the apprentice [TS]

01:09:17   to the science program of development [TS]

01:09:18   she is the science program of the family [TS]

01:09:20   I think the suggestion is that everybody [TS]

01:09:22   else in the villages too busy planting [TS]

01:09:25   crops and making sure the windows [TS]

01:09:26   runtime the luxury of that is how we [TS]

01:09:29   worked a lot of you know back in the [TS]

01:09:30   early scientific days like who had time [TS]

01:09:32   to do with science stuff like that [TS]

01:09:33   nobility or the the upper classes [TS]

01:09:34   otherwise you are you know you have to [TS]

01:09:36   work all day so you wouldn't die in the [TS]

01:09:38   winter I mean she has the time to get to [TS]

01:09:40   go into the sea of decay at the [TS]

01:09:42   beginning and and collect the spore and [TS]

01:09:44   then find the the Home shell which then [TS]

01:09:47   they say okay well later when we have [TS]

01:09:48   some time we'll go in and we'll get that [TS]

01:09:49   for our tools so i think just by [TS]

01:09:52   necessity now I i I'm actually kind of [TS]

01:09:54   confused as to why she's so secretive [TS]

01:09:57   about it other than that perhaps the [TS]

01:09:58   rest of the villagers will be so [TS]

01:10:00   disturbed by the fact that she's hanging [TS]

01:10:02   on to talk what they consider to be [TS]

01:10:04   taught explored i think is like the man [TS]

01:10:06   beyond like why are you keeping a baby [TS]

01:10:08   I'm like even during that sequence i [TS]

01:10:09   remember the first time I watch it kind [TS]

01:10:11   of understanding a dad it's like do you [TS]

01:10:13   really want your kids to have his own [TS]

01:10:14   because they look cute but like you know [TS]

01:10:16   like like monkeys they grow up to things [TS]

01:10:18   that can tear your face off or worse so [TS]

01:10:20   maybe you know they take that thing away [TS]

01:10:21   I don't kill it oh they're gonna kill it [TS]

01:10:23   like because you can't have that stuff [TS]

01:10:24   in the village of the same thing she's [TS]

01:10:26   being secretive she's learned she's [TS]

01:10:27   grown people don't like it when you [TS]

01:10:28   bring stuff back from toxic jungle when [TS]

01:10:30   I found like I know please you know [TS]

01:10:33   because of one of those things got on [TS]

01:10:34   their plants they got to burn the whole [TS]

01:10:35   forest down so you can kind of [TS]

01:10:37   understand why she's hiding it [TS]

01:10:38   because any of there is no culture and [TS]

01:10:40   supporting her right her you know let me [TS]

01:10:42   figure out how to save the world with [TS]

01:10:43   science endeavors but she knows Lorde [TS]

01:10:46   you people will be down with it because [TS]

01:10:47   she invites him into our secret room at [TS]

01:10:49   one point [TS]

01:10:50   yeah he's cool is the cool uncle yep [TS]

01:10:53   he's been places you know stuff he's the [TS]

01:10:55   cool uncle who will stop your sword [TS]

01:10:57   thrust with his wrist [TS]

01:10:58   yeah I don't have the best defense [TS]

01:10:59   mechanism but it worked the yeah they're [TS]

01:11:01   there you get he got he gets cool sword [TS]

01:11:03   fighting stuff there's a couple of [TS]

01:11:05   amusing sword fights where there's a [TS]

01:11:07   where you know there's a big there's a [TS]

01:11:10   lot of back-and-forth and then somebody [TS]

01:11:11   sort of like just wills their way to [TS]

01:11:13   push a whole bunch of people away from [TS]

01:11:15   them which is a classic classic maneuver [TS]

01:11:17   where you go on now I'm fighting three [TS]

01:11:19   of you push and they all fall down but [TS]

01:11:22   yeah I'm cool anyway he's definitely [TS]

01:11:24   cool it almost makes up for his terrible [TS]

01:11:26   hair style choices i want to ask about [TS]

01:11:28   the end of the movie uh so Monica is [TS]

01:11:31   seemingly dead and then she is sort of [TS]

01:11:33   like touched by many tentacles of many [TS]

01:11:36   ohms and she is raised into the sky and [TS]

01:11:39   is brought back to life and and then [TS]

01:11:44   walks across the the golden the golden [TS]

01:11:48   fields in order to return and and and [TS]

01:11:52   fulfill the prophecy [TS]

01:11:53   what did everybody think about this you [TS]

01:11:55   know this sudden death and resurrection [TS]

01:11:57   at the end of the movie for naaka I [TS]

01:12:01   didn't think she died is that she was [TS]

01:12:03   very badly injured and they healed her [TS]

01:12:06   with their you know totally scientific [TS]

01:12:08   healing powers that they have because [TS]

01:12:10   there was over a thousand years the heel [TS]

01:12:13   humans and no no III give it a little [TS]

01:12:15   bit of a magic angle but the important [TS]

01:12:17   point is not whether she said the [TS]

01:12:18   important point is she's choosing to [TS]

01:12:20   sacrifice herself in an attempt to save [TS]

01:12:22   our village she has no expectation she's [TS]

01:12:24   gonna live when she's sitting there with [TS]

01:12:25   the baby on the things charging towards [TS]

01:12:27   her like it's not like she thinks so [TS]

01:12:29   this will be final stop right before [TS]

01:12:30   they get to me she's making a brave [TS]

01:12:32   decision and her brave decision is not [TS]

01:12:34   to defeat the owned by commandeering the [TS]

01:12:36   big warrior and shooting them all until [TS]

01:12:37   they stay away from the village she is [TS]

01:12:39   trying to save the village in her way [TS]

01:12:41   which is they're mad about this let's [TS]

01:12:44   give the baby a give the baby back to [TS]

01:12:46   the right thing to do and be this is the [TS]

01:12:47   only reasonable way to save our city [TS]

01:12:50   our Valley we shouldn't be shooting them [TS]

01:12:51   with lasers from a giant and to make [TS]

01:12:54   this happen [TS]

01:12:55   you know I'm gonna sacrifice myself even [TS]

01:12:56   saving the home I'm gonna like stop it [TS]

01:12:58   from going into the acid water because [TS]

01:12:59   it doesn't know by having myself going [TS]

01:13:01   to the acid I'm gonna you know like she [TS]

01:13:03   she wins the day [TS]

01:13:05   by sacrificing herself whether or not [TS]

01:13:08   she actually went all the way dead [TS]

01:13:09   before they brought her back to life or [TS]

01:13:11   not and that is another example of [TS]

01:13:13   heroism does not equal vanquishing your [TS]

01:13:16   photos with strength like it's not that [TS]

01:13:18   they're not equivalent like a manliness [TS]

01:13:20   and manas and all that type of stuff is [TS]

01:13:22   not the only way to be a hero [TS]

01:13:24   yeah I don't think she is dead although [TS]

01:13:25   it's clear that the villagers from afar [TS]

01:13:27   think your kids the kids shouting very [TS]

01:13:29   loudly that she's dead and we grab my [TS]

01:13:31   saying yeah probably probably heard [TS]

01:13:33   they're all doctors she fulfills the [TS]

01:13:35   prophecy then everybody ok with the [TS]

01:13:36   prophecy fulfilled that was another sort [TS]

01:13:38   of rolling eyes having that I did it is [TS]

01:13:41   easy [TS]

01:13:41   not only that she's probably a princess [TS]

01:13:43   but she has to fulfill the prophecy ok [TS]

01:13:45   it was cute at to me it's sort of fit [TS]

01:13:47   along with with the bit of mystical [TS]

01:13:49   wisdom that i was reading from the ohms [TS]

01:13:51   I I felt like the the idea of a prophecy [TS]

01:13:55   bringing it all together was was kind of [TS]

01:13:57   cute and I i would have been fine [TS]

01:13:59   without it but having it in there was ok [TS]

01:14:01   and and like Steve I was really cool [TS]

01:14:03   with the idea that her dress became blue [TS]

01:14:05   because of the ohms blood just staining [TS]

01:14:07   it except for the design on the front [TS]

01:14:08   which is apparently resistant to own [TS]

01:14:10   blood and no and yes I was I was good [TS]

01:14:13   with it [TS]

01:14:14   yeah i mean that's that's the movie is [TS]

01:14:15   the formula you're going to be here [TS]

01:14:16   you're going to fill the prophecy to [TS]

01:14:17   twist on it this time is that if you're [TS]

01:14:19   young and steeped in a lady's culture [TS]

01:14:23   like I was doesn't occur to you that [TS]

01:14:24   she's going to be the hero and so they [TS]

01:14:26   have that hammer home the thing but in [TS]

01:14:27   the end it is a formula movie about you [TS]

01:14:30   know saving the world from destruction [TS]

01:14:32   through heroism and she's a princess and [TS]

01:14:35   she fills the prophecy and that's that's [TS]

01:14:37   how that's how these movies work so you [TS]

01:14:39   know it's I totally accept it because [TS]

01:14:40   this I think is a great example of that [TS]

01:14:43   genre that it does things in an [TS]

01:14:45   interesting way even though it basically [TS]

01:14:47   follows every point of performing well [TS]

01:14:48   and it's it's it's very miyazaki right [TS]

01:14:51   like the the whole mysticism and [TS]

01:14:53   prophecy type stuff is there it's just [TS]

01:14:55   it's in line with what he does pretty [TS]

01:14:59   much all the time does everybody have to [TS]

01:15:01   be the chosen one [TS]

01:15:02   you know does it but i guess that i [TS]

01:15:05   guess so well in 1984 you did ya then [TS]

01:15:08   people weren't tired of those tropes yet [TS]

01:15:10   in 1984 they were they stay something [TS]

01:15:13   that you did well not an animation maybe [TS]

01:15:15   maybe in in Japanese animation but [TS]

01:15:17   certainly not what we were seeing in the [TS]

01:15:19   States [TS]

01:15:20   that's what you got that was a that was [TS]

01:15:22   your classic tropes all right anything [TS]

01:15:25   else we should talk about that we [TS]

01:15:26   haven't brought up so far if you've got [TS]

01:15:28   some things on your list now would be a [TS]

01:15:30   time to get them off your list and into [TS]

01:15:32   the podcast i really like the exchange [TS]

01:15:34   with the Tamaki and soldier pops up and [TS]

01:15:36   says councillor we await your orders and [TS]

01:15:39   he responds shut up and the guy says yes [TS]

01:15:41   sir [TS]

01:15:41   oh yeah that was awesome ya know what [TS]

01:15:45   you wanted to do nothing [TS]

01:15:47   go away alright you got it yeah that was [TS]

01:15:50   the one chanakya that's that's exactly [TS]

01:15:52   how they should always go right just go [TS]

01:15:54   away [TS]

01:15:55   alright got it stopped like the the [TS]

01:15:57   credit sequence which is a like in key [TS]

01:16:00   where you know the movie is over right [TS]

01:16:03   but they give you the the main stories / [TS]

01:16:06   we want to tell you how all the people [TS]

01:16:08   that you care about what happened to [TS]

01:16:10   them [TS]

01:16:10   yeah that's a lot it's not going to be a [TS]

01:16:11   thing yeah exactly but it's going to be [TS]

01:16:13   the credits are going to roll over [TS]

01:16:14   there's going to be no dialogue so the [TS]

01:16:15   things we learned this one is you [TS]

01:16:17   basically have peace between the valley [TS]

01:16:19   in Kinshasa they don't presume that [TS]

01:16:20   battle that they were going to have when [TS]

01:16:21   they were interrupted from the home and [TS]

01:16:23   tell me kids leave the valley peaceably [TS]

01:16:25   we imagine new windmills and wells are [TS]

01:16:28   built knows because they're helping them [TS]

01:16:30   you know get their their feedback on to [TS]

01:16:31   them they plan to replant the forest was [TS]

01:16:33   burned down [TS]

01:16:35   she teaches the kids to fly gliders [TS]

01:16:36   which I don't know if this is a new [TS]

01:16:40   democratization of the gliding lessons [TS]

01:16:42   previously only the Royal people had [TS]

01:16:44   applied which we don't see anyone else [TS]

01:16:45   like gliders earlier in the movie but it [TS]

01:16:47   in the credits sequence she's like hey [TS]

01:16:49   kids i'm gonna show you all how to be [TS]

01:16:51   gladder flyers like me which is adorable [TS]

01:16:53   and the air will be filled with [TS]

01:16:54   high-pitched screams right well that you [TS]

01:16:56   just like Chuck's him off a cliff [TS]

01:16:57   hanging onto a wing is like that doesn't [TS]

01:16:59   it was like well I guess the ones that [TS]

01:17:00   fall you didn't make it [TS]

01:17:03   yeah as bell goes out with exploring [TS]

01:17:07   with Lord yuba they're just like off the [TS]

01:17:09   two of them you know as well does not [TS]

01:17:10   stay in Mary nautica like evasion and [TS]

01:17:13   they're not live happily ever after he [TS]

01:17:14   goes off he's going to be in [TS]

01:17:15   explorer and seeing how what what the [TS]

01:17:17   other humans are up to and checking the [TS]

01:17:19   extent of the cdk with Lord yuba and [TS]

01:17:22   then bugs be bugging ya i actually [TS]

01:17:25   because because I ended up taking my [TS]

01:17:27   computer into my room and watching most [TS]

01:17:29   of the movie by myself [TS]

01:17:31   the battery on my computer died exactly [TS]

01:17:33   as the first credit came up and i was so [TS]

01:17:36   tired as falling asleep anyway so I just [TS]

01:17:38   shut my computer and and and set it down [TS]

01:17:40   and was like yeah watch the movie this [TS]

01:17:41   morning when i open my computer up and [TS]

01:17:43   plugged it in it immediately started [TS]

01:17:45   playing from the place that it left off [TS]

01:17:47   and I got to see all of this nice [TS]

01:17:49   falling action and found find out you [TS]

01:17:50   know what happened to the character so I [TS]

01:17:52   felt like I i had a nice little had a [TS]

01:17:54   nice little sleep on it before i was [TS]

01:17:56   reminded of what happened to all these [TS]

01:17:57   characters i loved that there's some [TS]

01:17:59   scenes there where they're working on [TS]

01:18:00   the windmills as well yeah that the new [TS]

01:18:03   the windmills and well like they're [TS]

01:18:04   getting there getting there town back [TS]

01:18:06   into shape and that really impressions [TS]

01:18:08   the Clean Water the impression I got [TS]

01:18:09   from that was that perhaps they had [TS]

01:18:11   worked out a way to pull up pure soil [TS]

01:18:14   and water so that when they replant the [TS]

01:18:15   forest there replanting what is [TS]

01:18:17   effectively a non-toxic forest but they [TS]

01:18:19   already knew how to get clean water [TS]

01:18:21   because I said this is just like regular [TS]

01:18:22   from are well and the soil was tainted [TS]

01:18:25   so yeah I don't know if they've found a [TS]

01:18:26   way to get soil but newbie but there's [TS]

01:18:29   there's sand at the bottom of their well [TS]

01:18:30   that's pure as well so yeah but like if [TS]

01:18:33   you if you take this movie to be like oh [TS]

01:18:35   this was nuclear war right that's not [TS]

01:18:37   her radiation works like plants don't [TS]

01:18:39   make it go away like it's it's a little [TS]

01:18:41   bit plan w john a little bit tougher I [TS]

01:18:44   know you want to do it but like it's a [TS]

01:18:45   little tougher nut to crack with the [TS]

01:18:47   whole subatomic particles thing like it [TS]

01:18:48   is that radiation and decay really don't [TS]

01:18:52   don't stand up to biological means of [TS]

01:18:55   dealing with it it's going to be there [TS]

01:18:57   until it's not going to be there but [TS]

01:18:58   anyway this is all you know that you can [TS]

01:19:01   make up the rules as world however you [TS]

01:19:03   want but yeah like you would think like [TS]

01:19:05   if everything is polluted they're like [TS]

01:19:07   you see basically the people getting you [TS]

01:19:09   know but like the bumps on their hands [TS]

01:19:10   or whatever you're assuming the father [TS]

01:19:12   and all you know this is the fate of all [TS]

01:19:13   men who [TS]

01:19:14   or live near the jungle like we're all [TS]

01:19:16   just gonna die young from presumably a [TS]

01:19:18   cancer like element which seems like [TS]

01:19:20   kind of a bummer be like but how do you [TS]

01:19:21   even lift to that age if all of your [TS]

01:19:23   soil is tainted or whatever so now it's [TS]

01:19:25   kind of like the spaceships and star [TS]

01:19:27   wars movie the speed of plot the the [TS]

01:19:29   toxicology of the the sea of decay does [TS]

01:19:33   what it needs to do for the purposes of [TS]

01:19:34   this story as satisfying is that ending [TS]

01:19:37   montage is i still find the miyazaki [TS]

01:19:39   ending comical where everything is [TS]

01:19:41   resolved and boom the movies over now [TS]

01:19:45   here's the montage [TS]

01:19:46   it's called a happy ending i'm not sure [TS]

01:19:48   if you're familiar with it but no but [TS]

01:19:50   those kids movies I've seen happy [TS]

01:19:52   endings that don't don't last I like [TS]

01:19:54   that I don't want to have the big long [TS]

01:19:56   and drawn out thing I left my love the [TS]

01:19:57   credit sequence you don't need to have [TS]

01:19:58   any dialogue you just need to show like [TS]

01:20:00   seems like little vignettes of like you [TS]

01:20:02   know it just enough to know what what's [TS]

01:20:05   what's happening with them who you know [TS]

01:20:07   who is with who what are they doing are [TS]

01:20:09   they rebuilding our people happier [TS]

01:20:10   people said who's leaving who is staying [TS]

01:20:12   that I love that that's the perfect way [TS]

01:20:15   to wrap up the movie rather than like [TS]

01:20:17   otherwise you have to figure out some [TS]

01:20:18   way to end it end it at the you know [TS]

01:20:20   that the resolution of the major [TS]

01:20:22   conflict you don't even need to I [TS]

01:20:23   freeware the end I think they just ended [TS]

01:20:25   with like oh she's alive and we're all [TS]

01:20:26   happy that is the end you don't need to [TS]

01:20:28   drag it out anymore [TS]

01:20:29   I wonder if this was technically the [TS]

01:20:31   first studio ghibli film set correct [TS]

01:20:34   this studio is formed after this movie [TS]

01:20:37   it's like a movie that me and studio [TS]

01:20:40   galea this is early times though [TS]

01:20:42   yeah yeah whatever you think of like [TS]

01:20:43   future boy conan other things like you [TS]

01:20:45   know building up to the miyazaki we [TS]

01:20:47   would come to know a lot of this is all [TS]

01:20:49   throat oh you know later even though you [TS]

01:20:52   have this one that wasn't studio it's [TS]

01:20:53   really hadn't yet been formed good or [TS]

01:20:55   whatever like technically speaking [TS]

01:20:56   corporation wise if you look at this you [TS]

01:20:59   see a line straight from this through to [TS]

01:21:01   especially castle in the sky and and [TS]

01:21:04   Princess Mononoke i'm just wondering if [TS]

01:21:06   the fact that they packed so much story [TS]

01:21:08   and so much stuff into this movie [TS]

01:21:09   necessitated the use of that that [TS]

01:21:12   montage of the credits instead of [TS]

01:21:14   actually drawing out the ending more and [TS]

01:21:16   that inform future miyazaki films [TS]

01:21:18   because it seemed to work well i mean i [TS]

01:21:20   don't think he made up that thing it's a [TS]

01:21:21   lot of movies do that but it's it's [TS]

01:21:22   satisfying and if you're an animator we [TS]

01:21:25   gotta do a bunch of animation and [TS]

01:21:26   don't have to deal with the dialogue or [TS]

01:21:28   moving lips just people smiling and [TS]

01:21:31   doing happy things and being together [TS]

01:21:32   and it's it's a visual payoff for [TS]

01:21:35   watching the rest of the movie and [TS]

01:21:37   coming to enjoy these characters you [TS]

01:21:39   just want you want to see them be [TS]

01:21:41   successful and happy and have things be [TS]

01:21:44   resolved and you don't need there to be [TS]

01:21:47   a plot in that part [TS]

01:21:48   all right we're gonna wrap it up here I [TS]

01:21:50   was fun to revisit the Nazca and talk [TS]

01:21:53   about it for more than like eight [TS]

01:21:55   minutes like we did on that one podcast [TS]

01:21:56   that one time but we will be back [TS]

01:21:58   obviously at some point in the future [TS]

01:21:59   with another miyazaki movie i would like [TS]

01:22:02   to thank the members of this edition of [TS]

01:22:05   the miyazaki club for joining me tonight [TS]

01:22:07   Alan Simms thanks for being here thanks [TS]

01:22:10   for having me [TS]

01:22:11   Erica and sign thanks for joining us [TS]
