00:03:02 ◼   ► really savvy marketing campaign and [TS]

00:03:04 ◼   ► they'd really talked it up at comic-con [TS]

00:03:06 ◼   ► and they built some sort of buzz on you [TS]

00:03:08 ◼   ► know they did all the right kind of [TS]

00:03:10 ◼   ► pre-show marketing things at the [TS]

00:03:12 ◼   ► previous four phenomenal yeah but we've [TS]

00:03:14 ◼   ► seen that you can appeal to that kind of [TS]

00:03:16 ◼   ► geek audience and and you have a [TS]

00:03:18 ◼   ► terrible failure ratings wise because [TS]

00:03:21 ◼   ► it's just not a big enough audience on [TS]

00:03:22 ◼   ► its own and the fact is that they got [TS]

00:03:25 ◼   ► they got a lot more than that which i'm [TS]

00:03:27 ◼   ► not quite sure how they pulled it off [TS]

00:03:28 ◼   ► but Steve's right that the previews were [TS]

00:03:30 ◼   ► great and the buzz was good and the [TS]

00:03:32 ◼   ► reviews were good [TS]

00:03:33 ◼   ► certainly there's at least some [TS]

00:03:34 ◼   ► percentage of comic book geeks that got [TS]

00:03:36 ◼   ► dragged and I mean you guys go doubt i [TS]

00:03:38 ◼   ► think both of you were amongst those who [TS]

00:03:40 ◼   ► claim to be not fans of horror in any [TS]

00:03:43 ◼   ► and i don't know if i miss representing [TS]

00:03:47 ◼   ► this debate about what's referred to as [TS]

00:03:49 ◼   ► horror but yeah in general I would say [TS]

00:03:52 ◼   ► that I Walking Dead certainly applies [TS]

00:03:57 ◼   ► feel like John is almost the host of the [TS]

00:04:41 ◼   ► often than not that the zombies you know [TS]

00:04:43 ◼   ► that they play a part but really they're [TS]

00:04:45 ◼   ► just background for whatever human drama [TS]

00:04:48 ◼   ► or whatever flyballs of humanity the the [TS]

00:04:50 ◼   ► filmmaker wants to highlight in Romero [TS]

00:04:53 ◼   ► in particular used it basically all of [TS]

00:04:55 ◼   ► his films are some sort of commentary on [TS]

00:04:57 ◼   ► you know that the flaws of man and [TS]

00:05:00 ◼   ► consumerism and you know how people fall [TS]

00:05:03 ◼   ► apart when they're stuck in a room [TS]

00:05:04 ◼   ► together and they're supposed to work [TS]

00:05:06 ◼   ► together and yet they can do nothing but [TS]

00:05:08 ◼   ► the beat up on each other and make a [TS]

00:05:10 ◼   ► mess of things that there's a lot of [TS]

00:05:12 ◼   ► bothers me about zombies and that's one [TS]

00:05:13 ◼   ► of them that their their antagonists [TS]

00:05:15 ◼   ► that is never a character right like [TS]

00:05:19 ◼   ► even think some cliched as vampires [TS]

00:05:22 ◼   ► vampires have motivations and you can [TS]

00:05:24 ◼   ► you know they can be characters in your [TS]

00:05:25 ◼   ► story and you can you know but zombies [TS]

00:05:29 ◼   ► might as well be like bad weather or you [TS]

00:05:31 ◼   ► know or or disease or men they are kinda [TS]

00:05:35 ◼   ► that's what that's what I was gonna say [TS]

00:05:36 ◼   ► zombie stories are man versus nature [TS]

00:05:39 ◼   ► basically that they you know it the [TS]

00:05:42 ◼   ► nature is the zombie plague of the [TS]

00:05:44 ◼   ► zombies are in the background and [TS]

00:05:45 ◼   ► they're dangerous and they'll kill you [TS]

00:05:47 ◼   ► but they're there they're serious like a [TS]

00:05:49 ◼   ► like a tornado or hurricane or something [TS]

00:05:52 ◼   ► is sort of out of your control and man [TS]

00:05:53 ◼   ► is helpless to you know to stop it it's [TS]

00:05:57 ◼   ► just an unstoppable force and how do you [TS]

00:05:59 ◼   ► deal with it's like whether they can [TS]

00:06:01 ◼   ► sneak up on you very slowly [TS]

00:06:27 ◼   ► had time to shoot six episodes in order [TS]

00:06:29 ◼   ► to get it on the air when our they [TS]

00:06:31 ◼   ► intend to do more than six for the [TS]

00:06:33 ◼   ► second season the envelope there will be [TS]

00:06:35 ◼   ► 13a a more traditional cable seriously [TS]

00:06:38 ◼   ► you know I i guess i could just throw it [TS]

00:06:40 ◼   ► out there to start as is you know of the [TS]

00:06:43 ◼   ► season as a whole and where I guess [TS]

00:07:33 ◼   ► the comic not only are they I think [TS]

00:07:34 ◼   ► maybe making it shaped better for TV [TS]

00:07:37 ◼   ► that the plot kind of maybe hangs [TS]

00:07:39 ◼   ► together better but i haven't I have not [TS]

00:07:56 ◼   ► comic Rick goes into atlanta he meets [TS]

00:08:16 ◼   ► meet everybody and in this we meet the [TS]

00:08:18 ◼   ► people sooner they have more of an [TS]

00:08:22 ◼   ► adventure in the in the city the first [TS]

00:08:24 ◼   ► time they go back to the city they added [TS]

00:08:27 ◼   ► this character of Merle the kind of [TS]

00:08:29 ◼   ► awful racist guy who they end up leaving [TS]

00:08:31 ◼   ► chained up on the roof and he and then [TS]

00:08:33 ◼   ► he falls off his own hand and gets away [TS]

00:08:35 ◼   ► I never would've guessed up as I'm like [TS]

00:08:37 ◼   ► all this galaxy straight out of a comic [TS]

00:08:39 ◼   ► book i guess i know nothing about comics [TS]

00:08:41 ◼   ► but he just seemed like a comic book [TS]

00:08:42 ◼   ► character that you can see is that [TS]

00:08:43 ◼   ► entire plot shred of them leaving them [TS]

00:08:45 ◼   ► on the roof completely completely fresh [TS]

00:08:48 ◼   ► material that's completely fresh Lyle [TS]

00:08:50 ◼   ► the visit to the CDC to visit the the [TS]

00:08:54 ◼   ► guy who talks to his computer and [TS]

00:08:56 ◼   ► presses buttons and does research on all [TS]

00:08:59 ◼   ► on his own [TS]

00:09:00 ◼   ► the in the CDC in the last episode is [TS]

00:09:02 ◼   ► completely off the path of the of the [TS]

00:09:05 ◼   ► comic that guy doesn't really exist in [TS]

00:09:08 ◼   ► notable thing is that Rick finds out [TS]

00:09:11 ◼   ► that his wife and Shane were sleeping [TS]

00:09:14 ◼   ► together when he was presumed dead very [TS]

00:09:19 ◼   ► change that just made the character of [TS]

00:09:20 ◼   ► risk extremely dumb and unobserved it's [TS]

00:09:23 ◼   ► coming into the camp and everyone else [TS]

00:09:25 ◼   ► knows and Rises like I think you that's [TS]

00:09:28 ◼   ► just a storyline that they wanted to [TS]

00:09:30 ◼   ► defer but but the the fallout of that [TS]

00:09:33 ◼   ► through various means in the comic [TS]

00:09:36 ◼   ► spoiler alert for the comic air is that [TS]

00:09:39 ◼   ► a shame is killed very early on as well [TS]

00:09:44 ◼   ► and that he's still kicking and at you [TS]

00:09:48 ◼   ► know so huge some huge divergences at [TS]

00:09:50 ◼   ► and yet it's also in many ways so much [TS]

00:09:53 ◼   ► like the comic but somebody read the [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► comic I think that's great because I [TS]

00:09:56 ◼   ► think I know what's coming but I [TS]

00:09:58 ◼   ► actually know that I don't that I might [TS]

00:10:20 ◼   ► really don't know and that's great [TS]

00:10:22 ◼   ► because I i can watch the show while [TS]

00:10:25 ◼   ► appreciating its relationship to that [TS]

00:10:26 ◼   ► comic book without actually having it [TS]

00:10:29 ◼   ► kind of rec the suspense in any way [TS]

00:10:32 ◼   ► which is it's really it's a nice trick [TS]

00:10:33 ◼   ► by frank darabont who's the executive [TS]

00:10:36 ◼   ► producer and Robert Kirkman who's the [TS]

00:10:38 ◼   ► writer of the comic who worked very [TS]

00:10:40 ◼   ► closely with them and they actually even [TS]

00:10:42 ◼   ► wrote one of the six episodes so what is [TS]

00:10:44 ◼   ► the fact that the comic guy is helping [TS]

00:10:46 ◼   ► into adapted is that keeping the fanboys [TS]

00:10:49 ◼   ► at bay screaming that they've you know [TS]

00:10:50 ◼   ► go off book and although that seems to [TS]

00:10:53 ◼   ► be the template now because they're [TS]

00:10:54 ◼   ► doing that with Game of Thrones which is [TS]

00:10:57 ◼   ► based on the george RR r george RR that [TS]

00:11:00 ◼   ► was too many R's Martin novels is five [TS]

00:11:03 ◼   ► bars and very very complex guy is I'm [TS]

00:11:05 ◼   ► actually excited about Game of Thrones [TS]

00:11:07 ◼   ► even though I've never read the source [TS]

00:11:10 ◼   ► a good stuff it really good books but [TS]

00:11:13 ◼   ► what they've done with george RR martin [TS]

00:11:15 ◼   ► is he's writing an episode of the first [TS]

00:11:17 ◼   ► season of Game of Thrones or has written [TS]

00:11:18 ◼   ► and I think there is something to that [TS]

00:11:21 ◼   ► of a kind of co-opting the creator and [TS]

00:11:24 ◼   ► having him be involved so that you can't [TS]

00:11:27 ◼   ► say you bastardized the work because I'm [TS]

00:11:30 ◼   ► and creator as it as an ambassador of [TS]

00:11:32 ◼   ► the show then just think about how many [TS]

00:11:34 ◼   ► adaptation of stephen king has been [TS]

00:11:36 ◼   ► involved in his own work and they've [TS]

00:11:37 ◼   ► been off [TS]

00:11:38 ◼   ► oh so it's not always a Tennessee it so [TS]

00:11:41 ◼   ► it seems to be in a comic fanboys you [TS]

00:11:43 ◼   ► run the risk of of having the fanbase [TS]

00:11:45 ◼   ► turn against the guy [TS]

00:11:46 ◼   ► if if what he writes ends up being [TS]

00:11:48 ◼   ► crappy well I think that's always the [TS]

00:11:50 ◼   ► risk right and i think that with walking [TS]

00:11:52 ◼   ► dead it paid off in a way that some of [TS]

00:11:54 ◼   ► the Stephen King stuff for example [TS]

00:11:56 ◼   ► didn't is walking dead it turns out to [TS]

00:11:57 ◼   ► hit it's generally liked and so you know [TS]

00:12:00 ◼   ► everybody's happy and and because it's [TS]

00:12:02 ◼   ► generally liked and it's doing well the [TS]

00:12:04 ◼   ► fact that it diverges from the cannon [TS]

00:12:06 ◼   ► doesn't seem to matter and and it is [TS]

00:12:08 ◼   ► faithful in many other ways i mean there [TS]

00:12:10 ◼   ► were shots in it that are just right out [TS]

00:12:12 ◼   ► of the comics you know Rick and his hat [TS]

00:12:14 ◼   ► and his uniform and all that I'd love to [TS]

00:12:16 ◼   ► do that using just waiting to little [TS]

00:12:19 ◼   ► comic book frame to appear posterized [TS]

00:12:21 ◼   ► around the still image before they go to [TS]

00:12:22 ◼   ► commercial right yeah in some ways I [TS]

00:12:24 ◼   ► think it's Kirkman also working with [TS]

00:12:27 ◼   ► working with the youth the writers to [TS]

00:12:29 ◼   ► almost to a revision of his story it's [TS]

00:12:32 ◼   ► almost like a second draft so you know I [TS]

00:12:34 ◼   ► I the CDC think I mean the story in the [TS]

00:12:36 ◼   ► comics starts out around Atlanta and [TS]

00:12:39 ◼   ► nobody thought or Kirkman didn't think [TS]

00:12:41 ◼   ► you know there's a whole infectious [TS]

00:12:43 ◼   ► diseases center in Atlanta that might be [TS]

00:12:46 ◼   ► relevant and it's so when you watching [TS]

00:12:48 ◼   ► TV with like of course they go to the [TS]

00:12:50 ◼   ► CDC but the comic he just didn't think [TS]

00:12:51 ◼   ► of it so they you know that's a good [TS]

00:12:53 ◼   ► idea it's like hate [TS]

00:12:55 ◼   ► I should put that in there so they did [TS]

00:12:56 ◼   ► pretty sure the CDC is not rigged to [TS]

00:12:58 ◼   ► explode in a fireball just saying that [TS]

00:13:01 ◼   ► it would that be awesome that seems like [TS]

00:13:03 ◼   ► you know they got a little automatic did [TS]

00:13:06 ◼   ► I imagine it wouldn't look like CGI as [TS]

00:13:43 ◼   ► which is something I thought I'd never [TS]

00:13:45 ◼   ► see particularly with this much [TS]

00:13:48 ◼   ► no legitimate gore and and horror [TS]

00:13:50 ◼   ► set-pieces it didn't disappoint me in [TS]

00:13:53 ◼   ► some ways part of what i thought was so [TS]

00:13:58 ◼   ► great about the idea of having a weekly [TS]

00:13:59 ◼   ► series on zombies is that I think one of [TS]

00:14:03 ◼   ► the biggest failings of the of zombie [TS]

00:14:05 ◼   ► films and and horror films in general is [TS]

00:14:08 ◼   ► that you've got maybe an hour and a half [TS]

00:14:10 ◼   ► with the characters and you've got to [TS]

00:14:13 ◼   ► get to the killing [TS]

00:14:14 ◼   ► so character development is basically [TS]

00:14:16 ◼   ► non-existent in your average horror film [TS]
