00:00:36   has become one of the most quoted and I [TS]

00:00:41   think beloved cult if it can even be [TS]

00:00:43   called a cult film anymore so much to [TS]

00:00:45   talk about joining me today to discuss [TS]

00:01:01   it has so the princess bride a movie [TS]

00:01:05   that i don't think i ever saw in the [TS]

00:01:07   theater I was alive when it was in the [TS]

00:01:09   theater which puts me up on some people [TS]

00:01:11   who [TS]

00:01:14   yeah that's ok but but I didn't see it [TS]

00:01:16   either i did I saw on home video and I [TS]

00:01:18   was wondering what everybody was quoting [TS]

00:01:20   I didn't understand any of the quotes [TS]

00:01:21   when people were quoting things in [TS]

00:01:23   college I had no idea and then I saw the [TS]

00:01:25   princess bride well those are all from [TS]

00:01:27   one movie and I think we're going to [TS]

00:01:29   need to establish the ground all that [TS]

00:01:30   the first person who kind of [TS]

00:01:31   unintentionally spasmodically quotes the [TS]

00:01:34   movie losses or did they win [TS]

00:01:36   no they lose they lose the game points [TS]

00:01:40   for style [TS]

00:01:40   ok ok so you've got to go this entire [TS]

00:01:42   podcast without making a reference to [TS]

00:01:44   the princess bride I don't think that's [TS]

00:01:45   gonna work [TS]

00:01:46   that's inconceivable in fact there are i [TS]

00:01:49   was gonna say never go in against a [TS]

00:01:50   sicilian when death comes online it's [TS]

00:01:52   only mostly inconceivable [TS]

00:01:54   now this podcast is over yes so first [TS]

00:01:59   thing I wanted to talk about about the [TS]

00:02:01   princess bride is to begin at the [TS]

00:02:03   beginning and talk about the framing [TS]

00:02:04   sequence because one of the interesting [TS]

00:02:05   things about this movie is that it is it [TS]

00:02:08   is a once-upon-a-time kind of fairytale [TS]

00:02:11   and it is told as [TS]

00:02:14   story by a grandfather to his grandson [TS]

00:02:15   and so we've got these scenes at the [TS]

00:02:17   beginning end in a couple places in the [TS]

00:02:19   Middle not too much they don't they [TS]

00:02:20   don't overdo it [TS]

00:02:21   where you've got what you got young Fred [TS]

00:02:24   Savage young before the wonder years [TS]

00:02:26   even young fred savage and old Peter [TS]

00:02:29   Falk before he was really really old [TS]

00:02:31   Peter Falk but still old a little bit [TS]

00:02:34   scary and Fred savages in his room with [TS]

00:02:37   his chicago bears stephane and he's [TS]

00:02:39   playing I think it's micro League [TS]

00:02:41   Baseball I'm like a Commodore 64 and and [TS]

00:02:46   then we and then he tells Peter Falk [TS]

00:02:48   tells him the story of the princess [TS]

00:02:50   bride is Morgenstern and then you know [TS]

00:02:53   he interjected a few points in at the [TS]

00:02:55   end there it is spoilered huh [TS]

00:02:58   he finishes the story at the end and and [TS]

00:03:01   it's kind of hard work but I it's [TS]

00:03:03   interesting that they chose to do this i [TS]

00:03:04   mean the space on a book the book itself [TS]

00:03:07   has its own framing sequence which is a [TS]

00:03:09   little bit different and how would you [TS]

00:03:10   adapt that but it is charming although [TS]

00:03:12   every time I put in the movie i'm i'm [TS]

00:03:13   shocked because the the main part of the [TS]

00:03:16   story is so timeless and yet the framing [TS]

00:03:18   sequence is so so very eighties it's the [TS]

00:03:21   original book i think i read a librarian [TS]

00:03:24   high school suggested it to me and I [TS]

00:03:26   don't think she told me that it was a [TS]

00:03:28   parody and i think i was just naive [TS]

00:03:30   enough that when I read it I thought it [TS]

00:03:32   was I don't know who you're callin was [TS]

00:03:35   and so I started reading it and I don't [TS]

00:03:37   you know I should have even at that [TS]

00:03:38   point known because i was at like film [TS]

00:03:39   and I was like man this is sort of [TS]

00:03:41   bizarre and while I guess the original [TS]

00:03:44   book would really boring and they're [TS]

00:03:45   like oh okay I get it now I think I [TS]

00:03:48   should have seen that already but yeah [TS]

00:03:50   okay because he's talking about how he's [TS]

00:03:52   adapted it from the original form s [TS]

00:03:53   Morgenstern in there lots of footnotes [TS]

00:03:55   and judge things like that he took out a [TS]

00:03:57   40-page sequence describing the flory [TS]

00:04:01   and royalty and how they dress it was an [TS]

00:04:04   elaborate parody that is Morgenstern is [TS]

00:04:07   written that he didn't think modern [TS]

00:04:08   audiences were peasants it's like half a [TS]

00:04:10   paragraph and it just blows by it you [TS]

00:04:11   think wow it was written so colloquially [TS]

00:04:14   actually read a little bit like [TS]

00:04:15   nonfiction until starting until you get [TS]

00:04:17   to rodents of unusual size and some [TS]

00:04:19   other obvious giveaways but it seemed [TS]

00:04:21   like he was reinterpreting a story it's [TS]

00:04:22   like someone found talkin lord of the [TS]

00:04:24   rings and turned it into a [TS]

00:04:26   your page breezy tale about a guide us [TS]

00:04:27   to throw a runaway well i think if you [TS]

00:04:29   look at the actual like circumstances [TS]

00:04:31   that arose in the inn in Goldman's [TS]

00:04:33   writing the story which is to say I [TS]

00:04:34   believe he has two daughters and yes I'm [TS]

00:04:37   one night [TS]

00:04:38   what do you want to hear a story about [TS]

00:04:39   before you go to bed and one of them [TS]

00:04:41   said a princess and the other one said a [TS]

00:04:43   bride so he combined them basically to [TS]

00:04:45   create this and so it has a very Desiree [TS]

00:04:47   bedtime story quality right like it [TS]

00:04:49   veers off in strange directions but as [TS]

00:04:52   though it is all being invented on the [TS]

00:04:54   spot in some ways but as if you drop off [TS]

00:04:56   momentarily you wake up and the plot is [TS]

00:04:58   really remarkably different because we [TS]

00:05:00   missed a piece of it and very colloquial [TS]

00:05:02   like you know like sort of a dry humor [TS]

00:05:04   of a you know someone telling a story [TS]

00:05:06   that is set in grounded in a particular [TS]

00:05:08   time but he's telling it from the [TS]

00:05:11   perspective of a time that like like [TS]

00:05:12   jason said like you know the family [TS]

00:05:14   stories very narrow in anchored in the [TS]

00:05:15   eighties and so it has a very the whole [TS]

00:05:18   thing has a very anachronistic style to [TS]

00:05:20   it right like the people the way people [TS]

00:05:22   talk for a lot of it and the the jokes [TS]

00:05:24   and references are all like Billy [TS]

00:05:26   Crystal's characters is exactly such a [TS]

00:05:29   random you know random voice that the [TS]

00:05:31   miracle it the miracle max and Valerie [TS]

00:05:33   his wife do it's it's it's even miracle [TS]

00:05:36   max and Valerie Wright like us don't [TS]

00:05:38   know it seemed to fit in a semi in the [TS]

00:05:40   world of the story but they do because [TS]

00:05:42   nothing quite fits when I first saw the [TS]

00:05:44   movie i thought they just didn't fit all [TS]

00:05:46   it seemed just just bled into me and [TS]

00:05:49   then I read the book in there in the [TS]

00:05:50   book exactly the same way they're [TS]

00:05:51   described as elderly Jews in the book [TS]

00:05:54   and you know this was this was from a [TS]

00:05:56   time like before Europe was invented is [TS]

00:05:59   the quote that uses and then his copy [TS]

00:06:02   editor he says he says in the notes that [TS]

00:06:04   his copy editor it in the notes within [TS]

00:06:06   the book that is copy editor said how [TS]

00:06:08   could how is that even possible before [TS]

00:06:09   Europe has invented was that mean [TS]

00:06:11   and so his invented copy editor he says [TS]

00:06:13   that's the first time they've had gotten [TS]

00:06:15   emotional with me in the margins and the [TS]

00:06:18   the book is an astonishingly faithful [TS]

00:06:20   adaptation he leaves out very very [TS]

00:06:22   little in his screenplay and everything [TS]

00:06:24   proceeds exactly as its he got exactly [TS]

00:06:26   what he wanted and Goldman wrote the [TS]

00:06:28   screenplay too right yeah I noticed i'm [TS]

00:06:30   watching it there actually are some [TS]

00:06:31   editing and continuity [TS]

00:06:33   there's like the movie is a little [TS]

00:06:34   sloppier than I remember [TS]

00:06:36   no Mike's come down into this into the [TS]

00:06:39   scene but they really uh it's it's a [TS]

00:06:41   it's choppy at points not sure that's [TS]

00:06:43   intentional to follow the book story or [TS]

00:06:45   because they just kinda you know they [TS]

00:06:47   whipped it out this is not gotten me you [TS]

00:06:48   know 25-year golden deluxe reissue [TS]

00:06:51   anniversary set yet [TS]

00:06:53   well that's actually not true because i [TS]

00:06:54   own this island this movie on DVD twice [TS]

00:06:57   already [TS]

00:06:57   really one of them is the anniversary [TS]

00:06:59   edition and it does have some extras and [TS]

00:07:04   stuff that the original and I think the [TS]

00:07:05   print is a little bit better is the [TS]

00:07:06   printer master that would be my only [TS]

00:07:08   question [TS]

00:07:08   yeah it still doesn't look at grabbing [TS]

00:07:10   this is a movie that is deserving of a [TS]

00:07:12   real rehab treatment although i don't [TS]

00:07:15   know how they shot and how good the [TS]

00:07:16   quality of the masterís but but they [TS]

00:07:18   did do something like that they added a [TS]

00:07:20   commentary track and some interviews and [TS]

00:07:21   I've actually seen this in in 35 [TS]

00:07:23   millimeter film at are at our college [TS]

00:07:25   campus movie theater when I was when I [TS]

00:07:27   was an undergrad I'm and the print was [TS]

00:07:29   was terrible and of course but I mean [TS]

00:07:31   you know you go it was at midnight and [TS]

00:07:33   everybody went there and of course [TS]

00:07:34   everybody is quoting along and so it [TS]

00:07:37   didn't really matter if it was a [TS]

00:07:38   terrible printer not it was a great [TS]

00:07:39   experience rocky horror of fantasy [TS]

00:07:41   movies [TS]

00:07:42   it kind of reminded me of ladyhawke i [TS]

00:07:44   just rewatched it input i noticed during [TS]

00:07:46   the preparation for this podcast i just [TS]

00:07:48   rewatched you watching you watch [TS]

00:07:49   ladyhawke in preparation for this month [TS]

00:07:51   yell but i have i have seen part of it [TS]

00:07:53   recently love Lady Hawks with my [TS]

00:07:54   favorite films from that time I was [TS]

00:07:56   trying to think of other movies that are [TS]

00:07:57   like this and the only thing I could [TS]

00:07:59   come up with was Stardust it's kind of a [TS]

00:08:01   self-conscious adventure parody Omar I [TS]

00:08:04   think princess brides the rest of them [TS]

00:08:06   but why don't they make more movies like [TS]

00:08:07   this i think this is a terrific movie in [TS]

00:08:09   a terrific templates for years since [TS]

00:08:11   I've seen it but what about like Time [TS]

00:08:12   Bandits kinda reminds me of that too [TS]

00:08:14   well you're right about Stardust the [TS]

00:08:16   Stardust is a really good example and a [TS]

00:08:18   movie i liked and did have a little bit [TS]

00:08:20   of that vibe time pants at which far [TS]

00:08:23   Senate I think and puppets the parson [TS]

00:08:26   puppets Carson puppets is the downfall [TS]

00:08:28   of my career is my new hot pie store is [TS]

00:08:32   going to call farce and puppets [TS]

00:08:34   that's my autobiography imaginarium of [TS]

00:08:36   doctor parnassus also had kind of a [TS]

00:08:38   field anybody saw that very few people [TS]

00:08:40   did for 44 people sorry there are their [TS]

00:08:44   talent terry gilliam you know [TS]

00:08:46   has kind of elements of this but I i [TS]

00:08:48   think or maybe a little too have the [TS]

00:08:51   heart is a little too black [TS]

00:08:52   yeah he goes he goes a little dark with [TS]

00:08:54   his little too weird to a little too [TS]

00:08:57   weird [TS]

00:08:58   well watching the movie again reminded [TS]

00:08:59   me of all kinds of things i had [TS]

00:09:00   forgotten about from that era among [TS]

00:09:02   other things that cary elwes an [TS]

00:09:03   incredibly funny physical actor which I [TS]

00:09:06   you know I guess I and I've seen plenty [TS]

00:09:08   of stuff since but he's come to use a [TS]

00:09:10   stiff sometimes he's full of himself [TS]

00:09:11   sometimes he's not really acting and he [TS]

00:09:14   is got a straight face this whole thing [TS]

00:09:16   and it's just incredibly funny to watch [TS]

00:09:18   Kerry Ellis was one of those people that [TS]

00:09:20   I followed somewhat obsessively through [TS]

00:09:22   middle school and high school even [TS]

00:09:23   though his career was pretty much a dead [TS]

00:09:25   end at that point it's like mid mid [TS]

00:09:27   nineties early two thousands it wasn't [TS]

00:09:29   doing much but i like it when he was the [TS]

00:09:31   impediment agent on The X Files that's [TS]

00:09:34   when I I saw that I thought really [TS]

00:09:36   you're the guy who you know because [TS]

00:09:38   there's always going to be kind of suit [TS]

00:09:39   who's from the bad part of the [TS]

00:09:40   government who says oh I can't let you [TS]

00:09:42   do that [TS]

00:09:43   bulgaria you're looking at things you [TS]

00:09:44   should look at and cary elwes really [TS]

00:09:47   attended this you've sunk to this point [TS]

00:09:49   I i was actually really excited i ended [TS]

00:09:52   up for god knows what reason seeing ella [TS]

00:09:54   enchanted the movie version which the [TS]

00:09:56   book version the book of Ellen chanted [TS]

00:09:58   is quite a wonderful young adult novel [TS]

00:10:01   and the movie is completely terrible but [TS]

00:10:03   Kerry else is in it playing you know [TS]

00:10:06   kind of a kind of the the count [TS]

00:10:09   character in princess bride for ella [TS]

00:12:47   the thirties it's the aunjanue it's a [TS]

00:12:49   throwback I really [TS]

00:12:50   mmm that is she really did about she did [TS]

00:12:52   practically no acting the entire thing [TS]

00:12:54   so that's that's what the introduce you [TS]

00:12:58   just need to look around you throughout [TS]

00:12:59   this film put on a fake accent mr. sort [TS]

00:13:02   of but it's really is the traditional [TS]

00:13:05   role you introduce the actress in order [TS]

00:13:06   that we may view her through the film [TS]

00:13:08   later he may be allowed to act but in [TS]

00:13:10   this introduction you must just observer [TS]

00:13:12   i don't know i love her delivery of the [TS]

00:13:14   line the which is it the one that most [TS]

00:13:16   likely kill myself in the morning or the [TS]

00:13:18   it nothing i'm gonna go to my lock [TS]

00:13:20   myself in my room and shoot I've lost [TS]

00:13:23   one see i'm really i'm gonna win the [TS]

00:13:24   award for you're not bothering me from [TS]

00:13:27   watching princess bride she tells the [TS]

00:13:29   king but she's gonna she's gonna kill [TS]

00:13:30   himself kill herself and he says would [TS]

00:13:32   that be nice [TS]

00:13:33   yes before the West she kissed me yeah [TS]

00:13:35   that's right i love that i liked her [TS]

00:13:37   delivery there it sounds kind of [TS]

00:13:38   despondent but uplifting at the same [TS]

00:13:40   time [TS]

00:13:40   well and also the the ever so popular oh [TS]

00:13:42   my sweet whistling viton so I'm just [TS]

00:13:45   runs it all together so um the structure [TS]

00:13:48   of this movie is very strange [TS]

00:13:49   as mentioned earlier we start with an [TS]

00:13:53   extended chase essentially there's the [TS]

00:13:55   prologue right there is framing sequence [TS]

00:13:57   and then there's the prologue with the [TS]

00:13:59   Buttercup in the farmhand yeah yeah [TS]

00:14:01   kissing book but then there's the chase [TS]

00:14:03   scene which is where we get to meet our [TS]

00:14:08   not heroes are anti-heroes but they are [TS]

00:14:11   our heroes there or at least two of them [TS]

00:14:13   are kind are mercenaries and represented [TS]

00:14:15   very very comfortably in the mercenary [TS]

00:14:17   role play all the parts of gold Vizzini [TS]

00:14:19   41 physic and Inigo Montoya played by [TS]

00:14:24   mandy patinkin Andre the Giant and [TS]

00:14:26   Wallace Shawn man of letters and also [TS]

00:14:29   the man you don't want to go in with [TS]

00:14:34   death on with the Sicilian something [TS]

00:14:37   never going against a sicilian when [TS]

00:14:39   death is on the line now we are you [TS]

00:14:41   but i gotta throw out the one thing [TS]

00:14:43   Jason you just you just like tweak like [TS]

00:14:45   something in my head that made me make a [TS]

00:14:46   connection i never made that's what I'm [TS]

00:14:48   here for the chase scene is is very [TS]

00:14:53   analogous to the chase scene from [TS]

00:14:55   another William Goldman film which [TS]

00:14:57   Cassidy and the Sundance Kid where you [TS]

00:14:59   have the people running away and then [TS]

00:15:01   there's the the follower the people who [TS]

00:15:02   are disordered oddly following them and [TS]

00:15:04   never quite gets shaken off the trail [TS]

00:15:06   but i just found that interesting [TS]

00:15:08   because there's definitely an echo in [TS]

00:15:10   both those movies are both great movies [TS]

00:15:11   and William Goldman's a tremendous [TS]

00:15:13   writer but I thought it was funny that [TS]

00:15:15   it suddenly reminded me of that because [TS]

00:15:16   you you see him in the distance right [TS]

00:15:18   he's following them in the boat and then [TS]

00:15:20   climbs up the cliffs and everything a [TS]

00:15:22   very similar scene i just think that [TS]

00:15:24   there's something there [TS]

00:15:25   inconceivable but so we begin you know [TS]

00:15:28   they-they-they kidnapper they take her [TS]

00:15:30   to the boat to go across there screaming [TS]

00:15:32   heels you know they there's the boat in [TS]

00:15:35   the distance and we see them and so [TS]

00:15:36   we've met our three characters may have [TS]

00:15:37   kidnapped the the the girl and and they [TS]

00:15:39   go to cliffs of insanity [TS]

00:15:41   all right do it with the list Jason the [TS]

00:15:44   cliffs of insanity the they Andre the [TS]

00:15:47   Giant is so powerful that he just [TS]

00:15:49   basically pulls them up on her bottom [TS]

00:15:51   rope with like three people hanging off [TS]

00:15:53   of him i love that and faster faster [TS]

00:15:57   azines we're going faster the poor poor [TS]

00:16:00   Andre the Giant and then we have this [TS]

00:16:02   interesting structure where once they [TS]

00:16:04   get to the top of the cliffs we all [TS]

00:16:06   split up in true scooby-doo fashion so [TS]

00:16:09   that each character can meet the man in [TS]

00:16:11   black individually instead of as a group [TS]

00:16:14   where they might just kill the man in [TS]

00:16:15   black and be done with it so they have [TS]

00:16:17   to delivery to their back stories as [TS]

00:16:19   well of course right so that it sits [TS]

00:16:21   this great structure in in the middle of [TS]

00:16:23   the chase where we now unspool these [TS]

00:16:25   characters one by one and we need an ego [TS]

00:16:27   Montoya and there isn't just a [TS]

00:16:29   swordfight Inigo Montoya gets to tell [TS]

00:16:31   him the whole story so Inigo Montoya has [TS]

00:16:36   got to be the the most quoted character [TS]

00:16:38   in this movie right I you know day he [TS]

00:16:40   has great quotes why he's been growing [TS]

00:22:19   the great timing of the great little [TS]

00:22:21   piece of the time but in the end when he [TS]

00:22:26   gives a very impassioned speech it is [TS]

00:22:28   the speech that he's been waiting to get [TS]

00:22:29   his whole life and it's not a joke it's [TS]

00:22:31   it you know he he wants him to beg for [TS]

00:22:33   his life and then he's gonna say i want [TS]

00:22:35   my father back you son of a bitch and [TS]

00:22:36   he's going to kill a man and he does and [TS]

00:22:38   it's not played for laughs and it [TS]

00:22:40   shouldn't be and whenever there are some [TS]

00:22:41   moments of real realism you know some [TS]

00:22:45   seriousness and you have made the [TS]

00:22:46   silliness [TS]

00:22:47   I think the one thing that I really love [TS]

00:22:50   about this film is that no line is [TS]

00:22:51   really thrown away you know in in other [TS]

00:22:53   films you can have there's you know [TS]

00:22:55   there are scenes there are lines that [TS]

00:22:57   it's obvious that the screenwriter [TS]

00:22:59   either wasn't really paying attention or [TS]

00:23:02   that important just 30 advance the story [TS]

00:23:04   but every single scene every single line [TS]

00:23:06   in this movie is designed for several [TS]

00:35:38   back to the bedtime story it's all about [TS]

00:35:42   your children and you're making things [TS]

00:35:43   up you're gonna go all the different [TS]

00:35:46   places from and pull from different [TS]

00:35:48   types of stories and it doesn't doesn't [TS]

00:35:53   think taping it when it was on TV and [TS]

00:35:56   and that was the version that i saw for [TS]

00:35:59   a long time and I still got that version [TS]

00:36:01   of the things that to this day I noticed [TS]

00:36:03   when i watch the DVD now is that BM the [TS]

00:36:06   fire small obscene is where they cut for [TS]

00:36:08   time and and that fire swamp seeing is [TS]

00:36:11   in the movie is in the cut version but [TS]

00:36:13   it is it is a much shortened and i gotta [TS]

00:36:17   say i understand why because the movie [TS]

00:36:19   kind of grinds to a halt it is a [TS]

00:36:22   transitional phase and when they're in [TS]

00:36:23   the swamp before they start sort of the [TS]

00:36:25   next act and you know it [TS]

00:36:28   there-there's you know that all the [TS]

00:36:29   pauses and then there's that they go [TS]

00:36:31   underneath and the wrote walks by which [TS]

00:36:34   they just risky moment yes key moment in [TS]

00:36:37   the film to have both everyone [TS]

00:36:39   off-screen for a moment i remember [TS]

00:36:41   seeing everything the original film we [TS]

00:37:58   recalibrate and that's the second whole [TS]

00:38:00   movement of this movie which is he's [TS]

00:38:02   trapped and they got and then he's dead [TS]

00:38:04   and they gotta rescue him and she's you [TS]

00:38:05   know waiting for the fastest ships to to [TS]

00:38:08   to bring backward of him which is you [TS]

00:38:12   know it's the i would argue maybe the [TS]

00:38:14   weakest of the three kind of sections of [TS]

00:38:18   where it gets a little little Mel Brooks [TS]

00:42:34   he's as weak as a kitten throughout it's [TS]

00:42:36   a little-bitty hill at that moment to [TS]

00:42:38   people or English bedroom farce it's [TS]

00:42:39   like people are running down hallways [TS]

00:42:41   people come by people are stabbed doors [TS]

00:42:43   open and shut [TS]

00:42:45   people are certainly where they [TS]

00:42:46   shouldn't be in beds like it buttercup [TS]

00:42:48   throws herself on Cary Elwes and on the [TS]

00:43:29   he does because he's a giant knockdown [TS]

00:43:32   and the guy is getting away and it's you [TS]

00:43:34   know again a little bit of that [TS]

00:43:35   emotional realism injected in this [TS]

00:43:37   ridiculous scene that's happening now [TS]

00:43:39   it's a great that's also a very moment I [TS]

00:43:41   also love the the final showdown between [TS]

00:43:42   wesleyan and humperdinck with both [TS]

00:43:45   because I think they both get both both [TS]
