The Incomparable

25: Studied His Agrippa

00:00:00   the incomparable podcast is Morgenstern [TS]

00:00:04   page one number 25 for february's 2011 i [TS]

00:00:14   would like to tell you a story based on [TS]

00:00:16   a film based on a book that's not based [TS]

00:00:19   on another quick didn't ever actually [TS]

00:00:21   exist the topic today is the princess [TS]

00:00:23   bride a fine film from the nineteen [TS]

00:00:26   eighties a good decade directed by [TS]

00:00:30   robert wieder a movie that was a minor [TS]

00:00:34   success i suppose at the time and yet [TS]

00:00:36   has become one of the most quoted and I [TS]

00:00:41   think beloved cult if it can even be [TS]

00:00:43   called a cult film anymore so much to [TS]

00:00:45   talk about joining me today to discuss [TS]

00:00:48   this beloved film our serenity Caldwell [TS]

00:00:51   hi Jason Glenn fleischmann howdy [TS]

00:00:55   Greg moss hello Jason and Dan Morgan hi [TS]

00:00:59   Jason [TS]

00:00:59   thanks for coming back it's been awhile [TS]

00:01:01   it has so the princess bride a movie [TS]

00:01:05   that i don't think i ever saw in the [TS]

00:01:07   theater I was alive when it was in the [TS]

00:01:09   theater which puts me up on some people [TS]

00:01:11   who [TS]

00:01:14   yeah that's ok but but I didn't see it [TS]

00:01:16   either i did I saw on home video and I [TS]

00:01:18   was wondering what everybody was quoting [TS]

00:01:20   I didn't understand any of the quotes [TS]

00:01:21   when people were quoting things in [TS]

00:01:23   college I had no idea and then I saw the [TS]

00:01:25   princess bride well those are all from [TS]

00:01:27   one movie and I think we're going to [TS]

00:01:29   need to establish the ground all that [TS]

00:01:30   the first person who kind of [TS]

00:01:31   unintentionally spasmodically quotes the [TS]

00:01:34   movie losses or did they win [TS]

00:01:36   no they lose they lose the game points [TS]

00:01:40   for style [TS]

00:01:40   ok ok so you've got to go this entire [TS]

00:01:42   podcast without making a reference to [TS]

00:01:44   the princess bride I don't think that's [TS]

00:01:45   gonna work [TS]

00:01:46   that's inconceivable in fact there are i [TS]

00:01:49   was gonna say never go in against a [TS]

00:01:50   sicilian when death comes online it's [TS]

00:01:52   only mostly inconceivable [TS]

00:01:54   now this podcast is over yes so first [TS]

00:01:59   thing I wanted to talk about about the [TS]

00:02:01   princess bride is to begin at the [TS]

00:02:03   beginning and talk about the framing [TS]

00:02:04   sequence because one of the interesting [TS]

00:02:05   things about this movie is that it is it [TS]

00:02:08   is a once-upon-a-time kind of fairytale [TS]

00:02:11   and it is told as [TS]

00:02:14   story by a grandfather to his grandson [TS]

00:02:15   and so we've got these scenes at the [TS]

00:02:17   beginning end in a couple places in the [TS]

00:02:19   Middle not too much they don't they [TS]

00:02:20   don't overdo it [TS]

00:02:21   where you've got what you got young Fred [TS]

00:02:24   Savage young before the wonder years [TS]

00:02:26   even young fred savage and old Peter [TS]

00:02:29   Falk before he was really really old [TS]

00:02:31   Peter Falk but still old a little bit [TS]

00:02:34   scary and Fred savages in his room with [TS]

00:02:37   his chicago bears stephane and he's [TS]

00:02:39   playing I think it's micro League [TS]

00:02:41   Baseball I'm like a Commodore 64 and and [TS]

00:02:46   then we and then he tells Peter Falk [TS]

00:02:48   tells him the story of the princess [TS]

00:02:50   bride is Morgenstern and then you know [TS]

00:02:53   he interjected a few points in at the [TS]

00:02:55   end there it is spoilered huh [TS]

00:02:58   he finishes the story at the end and and [TS]

00:03:01   it's kind of hard work but I it's [TS]

00:03:03   interesting that they chose to do this i [TS]

00:03:04   mean the space on a book the book itself [TS]

00:03:07   has its own framing sequence which is a [TS]

00:03:09   little bit different and how would you [TS]

00:03:10   adapt that but it is charming although [TS]

00:03:12   every time I put in the movie i'm i'm [TS]

00:03:13   shocked because the the main part of the [TS]

00:03:16   story is so timeless and yet the framing [TS]

00:03:18   sequence is so so very eighties it's the [TS]

00:03:21   original book i think i read a librarian [TS]

00:03:24   high school suggested it to me and I [TS]

00:03:26   don't think she told me that it was a [TS]

00:03:28   parody and i think i was just naive [TS]

00:03:30   enough that when I read it I thought it [TS]

00:03:32   was I don't know who you're callin was [TS]

00:03:35   and so I started reading it and I don't [TS]

00:03:37   you know I should have even at that [TS]

00:03:38   point known because i was at like film [TS]

00:03:39   and I was like man this is sort of [TS]

00:03:41   bizarre and while I guess the original [TS]

00:03:44   book would really boring and they're [TS]

00:03:45   like oh okay I get it now I think I [TS]

00:03:48   should have seen that already but yeah [TS]

00:03:50   okay because he's talking about how he's [TS]

00:03:52   adapted it from the original form s [TS]

00:03:53   Morgenstern in there lots of footnotes [TS]

00:03:55   and judge things like that he took out a [TS]

00:03:57   40-page sequence describing the flory [TS]

00:04:01   and royalty and how they dress it was an [TS]

00:04:04   elaborate parody that is Morgenstern is [TS]

00:04:07   written that he didn't think modern [TS]

00:04:08   audiences were peasants it's like half a [TS]

00:04:10   paragraph and it just blows by it you [TS]

00:04:11   think wow it was written so colloquially [TS]

00:04:14   actually read a little bit like [TS]

00:04:15   nonfiction until starting until you get [TS]

00:04:17   to rodents of unusual size and some [TS]

00:04:19   other obvious giveaways but it seemed [TS]

00:04:21   like he was reinterpreting a story it's [TS]

00:04:22   like someone found talkin lord of the [TS]

00:04:24   rings and turned it into a [TS]

00:04:26   your page breezy tale about a guide us [TS]

00:04:27   to throw a runaway well i think if you [TS]

00:04:29   look at the actual like circumstances [TS]

00:04:31   that arose in the inn in Goldman's [TS]

00:04:33   writing the story which is to say I [TS]

00:04:34   believe he has two daughters and yes I'm [TS]

00:04:37   one night [TS]

00:04:38   what do you want to hear a story about [TS]

00:04:39   before you go to bed and one of them [TS]

00:04:41   said a princess and the other one said a [TS]

00:04:43   bride so he combined them basically to [TS]

00:04:45   create this and so it has a very Desiree [TS]

00:04:47   bedtime story quality right like it [TS]

00:04:49   veers off in strange directions but as [TS]

00:04:52   though it is all being invented on the [TS]

00:04:54   spot in some ways but as if you drop off [TS]

00:04:56   momentarily you wake up and the plot is [TS]

00:04:58   really remarkably different because we [TS]

00:05:00   missed a piece of it and very colloquial [TS]

00:05:02   like you know like sort of a dry humor [TS]

00:05:04   of a you know someone telling a story [TS]

00:05:06   that is set in grounded in a particular [TS]

00:05:08   time but he's telling it from the [TS]

00:05:11   perspective of a time that like like [TS]

00:05:12   jason said like you know the family [TS]

00:05:14   stories very narrow in anchored in the [TS]

00:05:15   eighties and so it has a very the whole [TS]

00:05:18   thing has a very anachronistic style to [TS]

00:05:20   it right like the people the way people [TS]

00:05:22   talk for a lot of it and the the jokes [TS]

00:05:24   and references are all like Billy [TS]

00:05:26   Crystal's characters is exactly such a [TS]

00:05:29   random you know random voice that the [TS]

00:05:31   miracle it the miracle max and Valerie [TS]

00:05:33   his wife do it's it's it's even miracle [TS]

00:05:36   max and Valerie Wright like us don't [TS]

00:05:38   know it seemed to fit in a semi in the [TS]

00:05:40   world of the story but they do because [TS]

00:05:42   nothing quite fits when I first saw the [TS]

00:05:44   movie i thought they just didn't fit all [TS]

00:05:46   it seemed just just bled into me and [TS]

00:05:49   then I read the book in there in the [TS]

00:05:50   book exactly the same way they're [TS]

00:05:51   described as elderly Jews in the book [TS]

00:05:54   and you know this was this was from a [TS]

00:05:56   time like before Europe was invented is [TS]

00:05:59   the quote that uses and then his copy [TS]

00:06:02   editor he says he says in the notes that [TS]

00:06:04   his copy editor it in the notes within [TS]

00:06:06   the book that is copy editor said how [TS]

00:06:08   could how is that even possible before [TS]

00:06:09   Europe has invented was that mean [TS]

00:06:11   and so his invented copy editor he says [TS]

00:06:13   that's the first time they've had gotten [TS]

00:06:15   emotional with me in the margins and the [TS]

00:06:18   the book is an astonishingly faithful [TS]

00:06:20   adaptation he leaves out very very [TS]

00:06:22   little in his screenplay and everything [TS]

00:06:24   proceeds exactly as its he got exactly [TS]

00:06:26   what he wanted and Goldman wrote the [TS]

00:06:28   screenplay too right yeah I noticed i'm [TS]

00:06:30   watching it there actually are some [TS]

00:06:31   editing and continuity [TS]

00:06:33   there's like the movie is a little [TS]

00:06:34   sloppier than I remember [TS]

00:06:36   no Mike's come down into this into the [TS]

00:06:39   scene but they really uh it's it's a [TS]

00:06:41   it's choppy at points not sure that's [TS]

00:06:43   intentional to follow the book story or [TS]

00:06:45   because they just kinda you know they [TS]

00:06:47   whipped it out this is not gotten me you [TS]

00:06:48   know 25-year golden deluxe reissue [TS]

00:06:51   anniversary set yet [TS]

00:06:53   well that's actually not true because i [TS]

00:06:54   own this island this movie on DVD twice [TS]

00:06:57   already [TS]

00:06:57   really one of them is the anniversary [TS]

00:06:59   edition and it does have some extras and [TS]

00:07:04   stuff that the original and I think the [TS]

00:07:05   print is a little bit better is the [TS]

00:07:06   printer master that would be my only [TS]

00:07:08   question [TS]

00:07:08   yeah it still doesn't look at grabbing [TS]

00:07:10   this is a movie that is deserving of a [TS]

00:07:12   real rehab treatment although i don't [TS]

00:07:15   know how they shot and how good the [TS]

00:07:16   quality of the masterĂs but but they [TS]

00:07:18   did do something like that they added a [TS]

00:07:20   commentary track and some interviews and [TS]

00:07:21   I've actually seen this in in 35 [TS]

00:07:23   millimeter film at are at our college [TS]

00:07:25   campus movie theater when I was when I [TS]

00:07:27   was an undergrad I'm and the print was [TS]

00:07:29   was terrible and of course but I mean [TS]

00:07:31   you know you go it was at midnight and [TS]

00:07:33   everybody went there and of course [TS]

00:07:34   everybody is quoting along and so it [TS]

00:07:37   didn't really matter if it was a [TS]

00:07:38   terrible printer not it was a great [TS]

00:07:39   experience rocky horror of fantasy [TS]

00:07:41   movies [TS]

00:07:42   it kind of reminded me of ladyhawke i [TS]

00:07:44   just rewatched it input i noticed during [TS]

00:07:46   the preparation for this podcast i just [TS]

00:07:48   rewatched you watching you watch [TS]

00:07:49   ladyhawke in preparation for this month [TS]

00:07:51   yell but i have i have seen part of it [TS]

00:07:53   recently love Lady Hawks with my [TS]

00:07:54   favorite films from that time I was [TS]

00:07:56   trying to think of other movies that are [TS]

00:07:57   like this and the only thing I could [TS]

00:07:59   come up with was Stardust it's kind of a [TS]

00:08:01   self-conscious adventure parody Omar I [TS]

00:08:04   think princess brides the rest of them [TS]

00:08:06   but why don't they make more movies like [TS]

00:08:07   this i think this is a terrific movie in [TS]

00:08:09   a terrific templates for years since [TS]

00:08:11   I've seen it but what about like Time [TS]

00:08:12   Bandits kinda reminds me of that too [TS]

00:08:14   well you're right about Stardust the [TS]

00:08:16   Stardust is a really good example and a [TS]

00:08:18   movie i liked and did have a little bit [TS]

00:08:20   of that vibe time pants at which far [TS]

00:08:23   Senate I think and puppets the parson [TS]

00:08:26   puppets Carson puppets is the downfall [TS]

00:08:28   of my career is my new hot pie store is [TS]

00:08:32   going to call farce and puppets [TS]

00:08:34   that's my autobiography imaginarium of [TS]

00:08:36   doctor parnassus also had kind of a [TS]

00:08:38   field anybody saw that very few people [TS]

00:08:40   did for 44 people sorry there are their [TS]

00:08:44   talent terry gilliam you know [TS]

00:08:46   has kind of elements of this but I i [TS]

00:08:48   think or maybe a little too have the [TS]

00:08:51   heart is a little too black [TS]

00:08:52   yeah he goes he goes a little dark with [TS]

00:08:54   his little too weird to a little too [TS]

00:08:57   weird [TS]

00:08:58   well watching the movie again reminded [TS]

00:08:59   me of all kinds of things i had [TS]

00:09:00   forgotten about from that era among [TS]

00:09:02   other things that cary elwes an [TS]

00:09:03   incredibly funny physical actor which I [TS]

00:09:06   you know I guess I and I've seen plenty [TS]

00:09:08   of stuff since but he's come to use a [TS]

00:09:10   stiff sometimes he's full of himself [TS]

00:09:11   sometimes he's not really acting and he [TS]

00:09:14   is got a straight face this whole thing [TS]

00:09:16   and it's just incredibly funny to watch [TS]

00:09:18   Kerry Ellis was one of those people that [TS]

00:09:20   I followed somewhat obsessively through [TS]

00:09:22   middle school and high school even [TS]

00:09:23   though his career was pretty much a dead [TS]

00:09:25   end at that point it's like mid mid [TS]

00:09:27   nineties early two thousands it wasn't [TS]

00:09:29   doing much but i like it when he was the [TS]

00:09:31   impediment agent on The X Files that's [TS]

00:09:34   when I I saw that I thought really [TS]

00:09:36   you're the guy who you know because [TS]

00:09:38   there's always going to be kind of suit [TS]

00:09:39   who's from the bad part of the [TS]

00:09:40   government who says oh I can't let you [TS]

00:09:42   do that [TS]

00:09:43   bulgaria you're looking at things you [TS]

00:09:44   should look at and cary elwes really [TS]

00:09:47   attended this you've sunk to this point [TS]

00:09:49   I i was actually really excited i ended [TS]

00:09:52   up for god knows what reason seeing ella [TS]

00:09:54   enchanted the movie version which the [TS]

00:09:56   book version the book of Ellen chanted [TS]

00:09:58   is quite a wonderful young adult novel [TS]

00:10:01   and the movie is completely terrible but [TS]

00:10:03   Kerry else is in it playing you know [TS]

00:10:06   kind of a kind of the the count [TS]

00:10:09   character in princess bride for ella [TS]

00:10:11   enchanted it's a very it'sit's kind of [TS]

00:10:13   wonderful he is a snake and I'm like oh [TS]

00:10:14   finally you're doing something that's [TS]

00:10:16   not saw or small TV parts even if it is [TS]

00:10:20   a terrible movie [TS]

00:10:21   can we come to some consensus on his [TS]

00:10:23   last name dlw es el L I always yeah I [TS]

00:10:27   always said l's but I guess LLS i'm [TS]

00:10:29   consulting wikipedia which does not have [TS]

00:10:32   a pronunciation carry Elvis this is like [TS]

00:10:35   well sure something it could be anything [TS]

00:10:37   like that elvish in elvish carry out why [TS]

00:10:40   is he not in order [TS]

00:10:41   rings Bell to relish it yes that's true [TS]

00:10:45   so so he's opposite he's oppositely [TS]

00:10:48   young Robin Robin right there yes very [TS]

00:10:52   young i would like to claim credit for [TS]

00:10:54   knowing Robin right before anybody else [TS]

00:10:56   because in high school I would come home [TS]

00:10:58   every day and plopped down in front of [TS]

00:11:00   Santa Barbara the Four Seasons soap [TS]

00:11:04   opera is this something you want to [TS]

00:11:05   admit Greg it was awesome wasn't it i [TS]

00:11:08   had and i have never given myself up to [TS]

00:11:10   anything even remotely like that before [TS]

00:11:12   or since [TS]

00:11:13   and it had a Martinez and margins right [TS]

00:11:15   it had not v martinez a margin 49 one of [TS]

00:11:20   the many many Martinez it was very [TS]

00:11:23   enjoyable and then Robin Wright goes off [TS]

00:11:25   to an actual career and I just think [TS]

00:11:27   she's sorry you mentioned santa barbara [TS]

00:11:29   that's where all the you know hot girls [TS]

00:11:34   come from is whenever I happened to be [TS]

00:11:35   watching [TS]

00:11:36   I just I'm just gonna put it I happen to [TS]

00:11:37   have carrier was as wikipedia page up [TS]

00:11:39   and since we're trying to figure out his [TS]

00:11:40   name and I scroll down to his credits [TS]

00:11:42   and i gotta say i absolutely love that [TS]

00:11:44   his credits include include TV credits [TS]

00:11:46   include such wonderful things as pinky [TS]

00:11:48   and the brain [TS]

00:11:49   yeah i'm not and the x-files as Jason [TS]

00:11:52   mentioned but most recently among two of [TS]

00:11:55   these rolls are the young pope john paul [TS]

00:11:58   the second home [TS]

00:12:00   the adventuresome pope john paul is [TS]

00:12:02   saying some sort of you know villa or [TS]

00:12:04   you know presumably probably have [TS]

00:12:06   villain in 111 order SVU and Ted Bundy [TS]

00:12:09   so I think his career is clearly [TS]

00:12:12   actually I'm gonna put every plug which [TS]

00:12:14   is to say he did a small recurring role [TS]

00:12:16   guest role on psych in the last couple [TS]

00:12:19   seasons as a like a jewel thief and he [TS]

00:12:22   was actually really really still working [TS]

00:12:24   hey what is arming he's got the charm [TS]

00:12:26   he's still working and I get our Michael [TS]

00:12:28   Caine's out there who take what comes [TS]

00:12:30   because that's how they pay the bill [TS]

00:12:31   that's right there's nothing wrong with [TS]

00:12:33   that and and of course Robin Wright has [TS]

00:12:35   gone on to be in many many things but [TS]

00:12:37   here she was you know she's she's the [TS]

00:12:40   princess she was introduced with this [TS]

00:12:42   movie that was our credit that was the [TS]

00:12:44   first time I'd seen in introducing [TS]

00:12:45   introducing credit since like you know [TS]

00:12:47   the thirties it's the aunjanue it's a [TS]

00:12:49   throwback I really [TS]

00:12:50   mmm that is she really did about she did [TS]

00:12:52   practically no acting the entire thing [TS]

00:12:54   so that's that's what the introduce you [TS]

00:12:58   just need to look around you throughout [TS]

00:12:59   this film put on a fake accent mr. sort [TS]

00:13:02   of but it's really is the traditional [TS]

00:13:05   role you introduce the actress in order [TS]

00:13:06   that we may view her through the film [TS]

00:13:08   later he may be allowed to act but in [TS]

00:13:10   this introduction you must just observer [TS]

00:13:12   i don't know i love her delivery of the [TS]

00:13:14   line the which is it the one that most [TS]

00:13:16   likely kill myself in the morning or the [TS]

00:13:18   it nothing i'm gonna go to my lock [TS]

00:13:20   myself in my room and shoot I've lost [TS]

00:13:23   one see i'm really i'm gonna win the [TS]

00:13:24   award for you're not bothering me from [TS]

00:13:27   watching princess bride she tells the [TS]

00:13:29   king but she's gonna she's gonna kill [TS]

00:13:30   himself kill herself and he says would [TS]

00:13:32   that be nice [TS]

00:13:33   yes before the West she kissed me yeah [TS]

00:13:35   that's right i love that i liked her [TS]

00:13:37   delivery there it sounds kind of [TS]

00:13:38   despondent but uplifting at the same [TS]

00:13:40   time [TS]

00:13:40   well and also the the ever so popular oh [TS]

00:13:42   my sweet whistling viton so I'm just [TS]

00:13:45   runs it all together so um the structure [TS]

00:13:48   of this movie is very strange [TS]

00:13:49   as mentioned earlier we start with an [TS]

00:13:53   extended chase essentially there's the [TS]

00:13:55   prologue right there is framing sequence [TS]

00:13:57   and then there's the prologue with the [TS]

00:13:59   Buttercup in the farmhand yeah yeah [TS]

00:14:01   kissing book but then there's the chase [TS]

00:14:03   scene which is where we get to meet our [TS]

00:14:08   not heroes are anti-heroes but they are [TS]

00:14:11   our heroes there or at least two of them [TS]

00:14:13   are kind are mercenaries and represented [TS]

00:14:15   very very comfortably in the mercenary [TS]

00:14:17   role play all the parts of gold Vizzini [TS]

00:14:19   41 physic and Inigo Montoya played by [TS]

00:14:24   mandy patinkin Andre the Giant and [TS]

00:14:26   Wallace Shawn man of letters and also [TS]

00:14:29   the man you don't want to go in with [TS]

00:14:34   death on with the Sicilian something [TS]

00:14:37   never going against a sicilian when [TS]

00:14:39   death is on the line now we are you [TS]

00:14:41   but i gotta throw out the one thing [TS]

00:14:43   Jason you just you just like tweak like [TS]

00:14:45   something in my head that made me make a [TS]

00:14:46   connection i never made that's what I'm [TS]

00:14:48   here for the chase scene is is very [TS]

00:14:53   analogous to the chase scene from [TS]

00:14:55   another William Goldman film which [TS]

00:14:57   Cassidy and the Sundance Kid where you [TS]

00:14:59   have the people running away and then [TS]

00:15:01   there's the the follower the people who [TS]

00:15:02   are disordered oddly following them and [TS]

00:15:04   never quite gets shaken off the trail [TS]

00:15:06   but i just found that interesting [TS]

00:15:08   because there's definitely an echo in [TS]

00:15:10   both those movies are both great movies [TS]

00:15:11   and William Goldman's a tremendous [TS]

00:15:13   writer but I thought it was funny that [TS]

00:15:15   it suddenly reminded me of that because [TS]

00:15:16   you you see him in the distance right [TS]

00:15:18   he's following them in the boat and then [TS]

00:15:20   climbs up the cliffs and everything a [TS]

00:15:22   very similar scene i just think that [TS]

00:15:24   there's something there [TS]

00:15:25   inconceivable but so we begin you know [TS]

00:15:28   they-they-they kidnapper they take her [TS]

00:15:30   to the boat to go across there screaming [TS]

00:15:32   heels you know they there's the boat in [TS]

00:15:35   the distance and we see them and so [TS]

00:15:36   we've met our three characters may have [TS]

00:15:37   kidnapped the the the girl and and they [TS]

00:15:39   go to cliffs of insanity [TS]

00:15:41   all right do it with the list Jason the [TS]

00:15:44   cliffs of insanity the they Andre the [TS]

00:15:47   Giant is so powerful that he just [TS]

00:15:49   basically pulls them up on her bottom [TS]

00:15:51   rope with like three people hanging off [TS]

00:15:53   of him i love that and faster faster [TS]

00:15:57   azines we're going faster the poor poor [TS]

00:16:00   Andre the Giant and then we have this [TS]

00:16:02   interesting structure where once they [TS]

00:16:04   get to the top of the cliffs we all [TS]

00:16:06   split up in true scooby-doo fashion so [TS]

00:16:09   that each character can meet the man in [TS]

00:16:11   black individually instead of as a group [TS]

00:16:14   where they might just kill the man in [TS]

00:16:15   black and be done with it so they have [TS]

00:16:17   to delivery to their back stories as [TS]

00:16:19   well of course right so that it sits [TS]

00:16:21   this great structure in in the middle of [TS]

00:16:23   the chase where we now unspool these [TS]

00:16:25   characters one by one and we need an ego [TS]

00:16:27   Montoya and there isn't just a [TS]

00:16:29   swordfight Inigo Montoya gets to tell [TS]

00:16:31   him the whole story so Inigo Montoya has [TS]

00:16:36   got to be the the most quoted character [TS]

00:16:38   in this movie right I you know day he [TS]

00:16:40   has great quotes why he's been growing [TS]

00:16:43   like whoa whoa which is time after time [TS]

00:16:46   and of course it's repeated right many [TS]

00:16:48   times in the movie because he sort of [TS]

00:16:50   talks about he tells the whole story of [TS]

00:16:52   the six-fingered man of the six-fingered [TS]

00:16:53   man [TS]

00:16:54   his father I don't but I like the other [TS]

00:16:57   one I actually was able to insert into a [TS]

00:16:59   fortune magazine article 99 about [TS]

00:17:01   windows XP that word you use it does not [TS]

00:17:04   mean what you think it means yeah and he [TS]

00:17:07   goes got amigos god Ilana got a lot of [TS]

00:17:09   lines singer so anytime Montoya [TS]

00:17:12   obviously you killed my father prepare [TS]

00:17:14   to die and it is it obviously passion [TS]

00:17:18   juice that's going to really sell it I'm [TS]

00:17:20   not an actor I'm quoting I'm I'm but the [TS]

00:17:23   host uh our players would like if they [TS]

00:17:25   would like to act out the parts we could [TS]

00:17:27   do a little staging we could just sit [TS]

00:17:29   here for the next 90 minutes and reenact [TS]

00:17:31   the entire princess from my friend of [TS]

00:17:33   mine actually did this recently he was [TS]

00:17:35   at a party where it came up that at [TS]

00:17:37   least a couple people there had not seen [TS]

00:17:38   the princess bride and he determined he [TS]

00:17:40   could pretty much do the entire movie [TS]

00:17:42   from memory so he fed lines through a [TS]

00:17:44   bunch of them and there he infected the [TS]

00:17:46   entire pan and someone videotaped it and [TS]

00:17:49   I'm like please get me a copy of this [TS]

00:17:51   because i think this would be awesome [TS]

00:17:53   it's the one-man show of the princess [TS]

00:17:54   bride so so um any moment i love the [TS]

00:17:59   swordfight great sword fighting my wife [TS]

00:18:01   is a is a former fencer and she was [TS]

00:18:04   amused by the fact that they fence with [TS]

00:18:07   swords that would not you couldn't do [TS]

00:18:10   that kind of fencing with swords like [TS]

00:18:12   that so they're obviously very light [TS]

00:18:13   swords but I'm it's a very exciting [TS]

00:18:15   scene and the when they're talking [TS]

00:18:17   during the the sword fight about the [TS]

00:18:20   different methods that they're using you [TS]

00:18:23   know if I you must respond with kappa [TS]

00:18:24   Farrah that sort of thing those are all [TS]

00:18:26   actual names of fencing new moves and [TS]

00:18:30   that actually that sort of is one of my [TS]

00:18:32   favorite lines which is if he has [TS]

00:18:35   considered his Agrippa which I have see [TS]

00:18:38   I don't know what it is about this movie [TS]

00:18:40   that which i have it's light-hearted it [TS]

00:18:42   has quit [TS]

00:18:43   it's witty in a in a way 3 scene has had [TS]

00:18:46   that infused in it and I get the sword [TS]

00:18:49   fight no no it's not just it is a [TS]

00:18:51   swordfight that's a pretty good sword [TS]

00:18:52   fighting it's actually too because [TS]

00:18:53   there's the left handed sword fight and [TS]

00:18:55   then there's the right here and sword [TS]

00:18:57   fight it separated by gymnastics [TS]

00:18:59   yes yes the the high bar a sidebar [TS]

00:19:03   gymkata anyone seen at gym [TS]

00:19:06   movie of just a few years older than [TS]

00:19:08   this one no I'm not sure any no money in [TS]

00:19:11   it is seen in pic metal with that I've [TS]

00:19:14   seen it [TS]

00:19:14   Greg seen every movie ever he's in this [TS]

00:19:16   town and they're all rushing at him and [TS]

00:19:18   at the end of the movie and he runs into [TS]

00:19:20   the center of town and there just [TS]

00:19:21   happens to be a gym horse there and so [TS]

00:19:25   he knows he'll gymkata skills to spin [TS]

00:19:27   his legs around and beat the people off [TS]

00:19:29   came out wrong [TS]

00:19:30   it's a combination of gymnastics and [TS]

00:19:33   some other thing from gymnastics martial [TS]

00:19:37   arts like it's like the guncotton from [TS]

00:19:39   equilibrium another great maybe it's the [TS]

00:19:41   miraculous appearances specific to [TS]

00:19:42   national equipment within the context of [TS]

00:19:44   the action that that resonates with [TS]

00:19:47   Princess Bride [TS]

00:19:47   yes why is there are on a high bar in [TS]

00:19:50   the middle of the ruins of the [TS]

00:19:52   whatever-it-is on the top of the cliff [TS]

00:19:53   is ready set I was admiring that [TS]

00:19:56   yesterday that was such a great set [TS]

00:19:58   really is it's funny when i was doing [TS]

00:20:00   stage combat my very first year of high [TS]

00:20:02   school I went to an arts high school I [TS]

00:20:04   we I took fencing and we actually ran [TS]

00:20:09   through this seen among a couple of [TS]

00:20:11   other very different film scenes in [TS]

00:20:13   order to get a grip of certain [TS]

00:20:15   techniques and to get taught certain [TS]

00:20:17   techniques which was hilarious [TS]

00:20:19   just like okay yes I'm gonna go after [TS]

00:20:22   school and reenact Grand Princess Bride [TS]

00:20:24   seen or seen from the matrix or [TS]

00:20:26   something like that there was some high [TS]

00:20:27   school it was pretty great [TS]

00:20:30   I mean if you're doing matrix yes hey I [TS]

00:20:33   got to I got to choreograph burly brawl [TS]

00:20:35   so that was pretty great none of them [TS]

00:20:36   went to college i'm a shot down the [TS]

00:20:38   school and decertified it and fired all [TS]

00:20:41   the teachers there's a great moment [TS]

00:20:42   scattered as gems like little jewels [TS]

00:20:44   chain throughout this movie one of the [TS]

00:20:46   reasons i think it's an enduring film [TS]

00:20:48   it's enjoyable to watch is that it's got [TS]

00:20:50   ridiculously low farce and stupid crap [TS]

00:20:52   in it and I mean you know i should say [TS]

00:20:54   it's actually pretty high brother are no [TS]

00:20:56   crap jokes was like no it's the Middle [TS]

00:20:58   Ages or whatever eighteen hundreds or [TS]

00:20:59   whatever supposed to be in the not [TS]

00:21:01   stepping in manure you know so it's not [TS]

00:21:02   an L Brooks movie we know that if I was [TS]

00:21:04   about to say it [TS]

00:21:05   they didn't take the mel brooks path [TS]

00:21:07   other than the fact that the miracle max [TS]

00:21:08   the miracle max would be the mel brooks [TS]

00:21:10   part except you're not being played by [TS]

00:21:13   now that billy crystal is seemingly Loki [TS]

00:21:15   by comparison to hell Brooks would have [TS]

00:21:16   played that but the but so little gems [TS]

00:21:19   stronger at the film are these deeply [TS]

00:21:21   serious moments that resonate well above [TS]

00:21:24   the far so I was watching last night and [TS]

00:21:26   I i remember the scene in my head but [TS]

00:21:28   seeing it [TS]

00:21:28   he's carry out west is making its way up [TS]

00:21:30   the cliffs of insanity many tankers [TS]

00:21:33   waiting for marriage like you don't go [TS]

00:21:34   faster if you get a rope without you [TS]

00:21:35   know I don't know what you trust me no I [TS]

00:21:37   give you my what can I where is the [TS]

00:21:39   Spaniard man you're known to many [TS]

00:21:41   Spaniards how hard that he says I swear [TS]

00:21:43   on the soul of my father don't be going [TS]

00:21:45   twice you will not fall and it's like [TS]

00:21:47   when a different film and he says [TS]

00:21:49   they're all right just a little you get [TS]

00:21:51   like 10 seconds 15 seconds of this [TS]

00:21:53   beautiful moment that is completely [TS]

00:21:55   genuine and then we're back to silly [TS]

00:21:57   stuff in there but the same thing when [TS]

00:21:59   he confronts the six-fingered man when [TS]

00:22:01   he confronts the count you know he gives [TS]

00:22:02   a really really effective speech about [TS]

00:22:05   you know I've been searching my whole [TS]

00:22:07   life and and you know and he finally he [TS]

00:22:10   he gives it low-key really intensely you [TS]

00:22:12   killed my father prepare to die and [TS]

00:22:14   christopher guest looks at him and then [TS]

00:22:16   turns and runs away you go from one of [TS]

00:22:19   the great timing of the great little [TS]

00:22:21   piece of the time but in the end when he [TS]

00:22:23   gets to go to count Rugen he you know he [TS]

00:22:26   gives a very impassioned speech it is [TS]

00:22:28   the speech that he's been waiting to get [TS]

00:22:29   his whole life and it's not a joke it's [TS]

00:22:31   it you know he he wants him to beg for [TS]

00:22:33   his life and then he's gonna say i want [TS]

00:22:35   my father back you son of a bitch and [TS]

00:22:36   he's going to kill a man and he does and [TS]

00:22:38   it's not played for laughs and it [TS]

00:22:40   shouldn't be and whenever there are some [TS]

00:22:41   moments of real realism you know some [TS]

00:22:45   seriousness and you have made the [TS]

00:22:46   silliness [TS]

00:22:47   I think the one thing that I really love [TS]

00:22:50   about this film is that no line is [TS]

00:22:51   really thrown away you know in in other [TS]

00:22:53   films you can have there's you know [TS]

00:22:55   there are scenes there are lines that [TS]

00:22:57   it's obvious that the screenwriter [TS]

00:22:59   either wasn't really paying attention or [TS]

00:23:01   it wasn't really that it's not really [TS]

00:23:02   that important just 30 advance the story [TS]

00:23:04   but every single scene every single line [TS]

00:23:06   in this movie is designed for several [TS]

00:23:09   purposes and that's what kind of [TS]

00:23:10   captures the imagination so much clearer [TS]

00:23:14   yeah there are so many great just like I [TS]

00:23:16   think of other moments i was just [TS]

00:23:17   looking through a list of quotes refresh [TS]

00:23:19   my memory but i love this scene you know [TS]

00:23:21   right before we unmask the dread pirate [TS]

00:23:24   roberts the man in black where he says [TS]

00:23:27   he has that wonderful life is pain [TS]

00:23:29   Highness anyone who sells says [TS]

00:23:30   differently something good [TS]

00:23:32   inches which is another like another [TS]

00:23:34   sort of anachronism yes fine right but [TS]

00:23:36   cute but what a great line we what [TS]

00:23:40   strikes me about this movie is is it's [TS]

00:23:42   the writing that makes it what it is [TS]

00:23:44   inside the nerd cannon I mean it'sit's [TS]

00:23:46   kind of oddball for the way movies that [TS]

00:23:50   nerds enjoy because there's no sequels [TS]

00:23:52   and there's not much investment in the [TS]

00:23:54   world i don't have a lot of Princess [TS]

00:23:56   Bride fanfic oh god but i don't i don't [TS]

00:24:00   know of any cost play i don't know of [TS]

00:24:02   any conventions but everybody i know [TS]

00:24:04   loves this movie and can quote it like [TS]

00:24:06   crazy and it has to be because of the [TS]

00:24:08   writing it's a fairytale to write like [TS]

00:24:10   there's an aspect to that it seems more [TS]

00:24:13   like a timeless fairytale story then [TS]

00:24:16   even like a a beloved movie right in [TS]

00:24:20   some ways you don't tampering with it [TS]

00:24:22   would be would be wrong you know it [TS]

00:24:24   taking it to any of those places would [TS]

00:24:26   be deserving experior it's it's magic [TS]

00:24:29   and fun at its most pure it's not at you [TS]

00:24:31   know you don't it's not something that [TS]

00:24:33   you can take in any way mark market [TS]

00:24:37   forces take things like crazy [TS]

00:24:38   great great i'll send you mind my [TS]

00:24:40   manuscript of about the about the the [TS]

00:24:44   Gilder royal family and imaginations [TS]

00:24:46   that they go through when their attempts [TS]

00:24:48   to according to other than goldman i [TS]

00:24:50   read something different before the show [TS]

00:24:52   from goldman which said that he had [TS]

00:24:54   actually tried to write a sequel but he [TS]

00:24:58   said I got I got pissed at myself [TS]

00:24:59   because I would stand i would sit there [TS]

00:25:01   looking at a blank page i just couldn't [TS]

00:25:02   think of anything to write there's [TS]

00:25:04   another s Morgenstern book called the [TS]

00:25:06   silent gondoliers but it's not the floor [TS]

00:25:09   in universe right and even that doesn't [TS]

00:25:12   see me odd-even that I said that the [TS]

00:25:14   floor in universe you can talk about [TS]

00:25:15   Star Trek Star Wars I i believe the [TS]

00:25:17   accepted turn is the floor reverse for [TS]

00:25:20   Gil diverse it just seems wrong [TS]

00:25:23   it's the you know it's the the [TS]

00:25:25   neverending story part 2 like ABS that [TS]

00:25:28   would be here right i mean that was a [TS]

00:25:31   problem that was the problem so so I [TS]

00:25:34   want to I want to get back to what [TS]

00:25:36   little structure this podcast has which [TS]

00:25:37   I'm sort of walking part of part of this [TS]

00:25:39   of the structure of the movie we left [TS]

00:25:41   Inigo Montoya knocked out because it [TS]

00:25:43   would be a an awful waste [TS]

00:25:46   of material to leave this poor sorts [TS]

00:25:48   been dead and move on the man in black [TS]

00:25:50   then moves on to the to the next bit of [TS]

00:25:54   peril which is Fezzik the giant played [TS]

00:25:56   by wrestler wrestling hall of famer i'll [TS]

00:25:59   i'll point out Andre the Giant who [TS]

00:26:01   didn't speak English basically at all [TS]

00:26:04   and apparently was given his lines by [TS]

00:26:06   somebody off-screen before he would [TS]

00:26:09   shoot the scenes so that he would yet so [TS]

00:26:11   that he could save him because he was [TS]

00:26:13   really really terrible at English and [TS]

00:26:16   yet there's something so delightful [TS]

00:26:17   about his about his double honest he's [TS]

00:26:19   my favorite thing in the entire movie is [TS]

00:26:21   that sometimes we have you know David [TS]

00:26:23   Lynch often likes the cast like native [TS]

00:26:25   people he like Andy and twin peaks the [TS]

00:26:28   sheriff's deputy was like a driver and [TS]

00:26:30   the guy could not act to save his life [TS]

00:26:32   and was I kind of loved him because he [TS]

00:26:34   had this awkwardness that was completely [TS]

00:26:36   honest and and completely charming [TS]

00:26:40   yeah i mean one of one of my other again [TS]

00:26:43   i'm going to just list all these [TS]

00:26:44   favorite things in this movie but the [TS]

00:26:45   thing I love about the about the scenes [TS]

00:26:47   where would where they send Fezzik to [TS]

00:26:50   kill the man in black is is that the [TS]

00:26:53   scene he tells him to throw to get a [TS]

00:26:55   rock hide behind the high behind the [TS]

00:26:57   boulder and throw the rock at his head [TS]

00:26:58   and kill him and he said my way is not [TS]

00:27:00   very sportsmanlike in which was my way [TS]

00:27:03   that's not very sportsmanlike and and [TS]

00:27:05   and again this movie doesn't such an [TS]

00:27:07   amazing job of taking you're essentially [TS]

00:27:09   what are supposed to be your bad guys [TS]

00:27:11   and by the time they get the to the [TS]

00:27:13   point where where they're going to [TS]

00:27:15   perpetrate their they're supposedly evil [TS]

00:27:17   acts you're on their side and you hope [TS]

00:27:20   that they don't get killed by the the [TS]

00:27:22   man in black and so obviously the man in [TS]

00:27:24   black does his does his his best on the [TS]

00:27:27   you know as God intended i think they [TS]

00:27:29   say where it's a you know fist against [TS]

00:27:32   fists which is slightly unfair for the [TS]

00:27:33   man in black but he managed this is your [TS]

00:27:35   you mean you put down your rock and I [TS]

00:27:37   put that my sword and we try to kill [TS]

00:27:38   each other like civilized people yes [TS]

00:27:39   that's right that sportsman like not not [TS]

00:27:43   not like throwing a rock at his head [TS]

00:27:45   I could have hit you you know so course [TS]

00:27:48   no one loves eeny there's no love for [TS]

00:27:50   his no no Sol Sol Sol of busyness so now [TS]

00:27:53   we get to it so now it is down to you [TS]

00:27:55   and it is down to me they meet this is [TS]

00:27:58   easy meets the man in black [TS]

00:27:59   with buttercup tied up and there's a [TS]

00:28:01   battle of wits which he accepted the [TS]

00:28:03   death [TS]

00:28:04   that's right and so while sean is busy [TS]

00:28:08   knee again inconceivable the one of the [TS]

00:28:11   most courted things from this movie and [TS]

00:28:13   such a funny part you know he--he's in [TS]

00:28:15   it in the first third and then he's dead [TS]

00:28:17   but you know such a just I laughs the [TS]

00:28:21   entire time he's on the screen he [TS]

00:28:22   captures the screen [TS]

00:28:23   anytime he's on it's just eyes they're [TS]

00:28:26   ok he's looking around he's got is [TS]

00:28:28   gesturing me that there's a lot going on [TS]

00:28:30   because he obviously thinks he's a [TS]

00:28:32   genius you know and to Socrates Plato [TS]

00:28:35   amateurs moron moron morons [TS]

00:28:39   I just I love that was just looking at [TS]

00:28:40   the the transcript of that of the battle [TS]

00:28:42   of the woods which is hilarious because [TS]

00:28:45   of course he spends the entire time like [TS]

00:28:47   you essentially stalling gonna try to [TS]

00:28:50   make all these conclusions you've [TS]

00:28:51   decided then not hardly [TS]

00:28:53   yeah you're just stalling now you'd like [TS]

00:28:55   to think that wouldn't you [TS]

00:28:57   but then he gets you know basically what [TS]

00:28:59   is it all come down to he switches the [TS]

00:29:02   glasses all right look over there [TS]

00:29:04   yeah which is you're right i mean that's [TS]

00:29:05   that's that's actually probably the [TS]

00:29:07   right game but if they haven't poisoned [TS]

00:29:08   both cups with I O'Kane and of course [TS]

00:29:10   and of course then we learned that the [TS]

00:29:12   man in black not only you know is smart [TS]

00:29:14   enough to know good enough that sword [TS]

00:29:15   fighting to be enabled Montoya and sort [TS]

00:29:18   of clever enough and resilient enough to [TS]

00:29:19   be physical but he is also far far [TS]

00:29:22   smarter because in you know he went into [TS]

00:29:24   this game knowing there was no way he [TS]

00:29:25   could lose its a brilliant strategy i [TS]

00:29:27   thought when i call forward call for 25 [TS]

00:29:30   years to sherlock BBC discussed as heard [TS]

00:29:34   on the previous episode of the [TS]

00:29:35   uncomfortable and we were talking about [TS]

00:29:38   the cyanide capsule or whatever capsule [TS]

00:29:41   episode it was the first right yeah [TS]

00:29:43   yes and it was exactly this scene and I [TS]

00:29:46   actually thought that the resolution of [TS]

00:29:49   that would be that the spoiler horn cab [TS]

00:29:53   driver was how to make yourself immune [TS]

00:29:55   to some poison are mostly municipalities [TS]

00:29:57   it seemed like the logical outcome and [TS]

00:29:59   it was not that that even that leads up [TS]

00:30:01   to the the Battle of it also leads up to [TS]

00:30:03   one of my favorite scenes which is when [TS]

00:30:05   the prince is trying to track them down [TS]

00:30:07   and so we've been told this I O'Kane [TS]

00:30:09   powder which he used to poison it is is [TS]

00:30:11   odorless and tasteless and [TS]

00:30:13   you know totally invisible and so [TS]

00:30:15   there's a scene where the Prince comes [TS]

00:30:16   up you know but picks up the little vial [TS]

00:30:18   sniffs it and goes I Akane powder think [TS]

00:30:21   it's a great scene [TS]

00:30:23   yeah why I don't know because he's such [TS]

00:30:25   a buffoon in like in every other way [TS]

00:30:27   right really sense I ok and powder but [TS]

00:30:30   there's something but it's what he does [TS]

00:30:32   not smell [TS]

00:30:33   yes is I ok yeah but that's that's the [TS]

00:30:36   same scene where he were he says that if [TS]

00:30:38   this doesn't go well he will be most put [TS]

00:30:39   out what's the book has much more about [TS]

00:30:42   him being mean if it's mentioned the [TS]

00:30:44   movie i realized the first time you see [TS]

00:30:46   the princess really doing anything he's [TS]

00:30:48   tracking but there's no explanation of [TS]

00:30:49   it gets down he looks at some footsteps [TS]

00:30:51   and introduces the entire story from [TS]

00:30:53   that which is a great tell there was a [TS]

00:30:55   little what's up [TS]

00:30:56   oh yes I don't know that there was a [TS]

00:30:57   battle and butt in the in the book it's [TS]

00:31:00   much more overtime really guy only lives [TS]

00:31:02   for hunting and fighting the reason he [TS]

00:31:04   wants a war with guilders because he [TS]

00:31:06   wants to do some more you know fighting [TS]

00:31:08   and fighting [TS]

00:31:09   yeah right so I Wesley and Buttercup [TS]

00:31:13   irawr reunited and he tells a story [TS]

00:31:15   about the dread pirate roberts and and [TS]

00:31:18   then if they go down a hill and and then [TS]

00:31:22   the movie strips to a completely [TS]

00:31:24   different location that's not in any way [TS]

00:31:25   related to anything we've seen before [TS]

00:31:27   he's a Dogma 95 issue here and I throat [TS]

00:31:31   I'm just throwing that out there that is [TS]

00:31:33   that the first time those two things [TS]

00:31:34   have i mentioned princess bride and [TS]

00:31:37   documenting five [TS]

00:31:38   well let me ask you this you would think [TS]

00:31:40   so you know that you know that large [TS]

00:31:42   front rear and his elk right dogma [TS]

00:31:44   continuity of sort of form in space [TS]

00:31:46   without flashbacks we have the friendly [TS]

00:31:48   mechanism which violates that but i was [TS]

00:31:49   thinking and I thought about this again [TS]

00:31:51   we watching the movie that the Dread [TS]

00:31:53   Pirate Roberts will be a great little [TS]

00:31:54   action scene right it would have been [TS]

00:31:56   that well I was captured by the dread [TS]

00:31:57   pirate roberts and in the book I think [TS]

00:31:59   it's more of a narrative it's not him [TS]

00:32:01   telling it's a little more narrow [TS]

00:32:02   description [TS]

00:32:03   although I'm hazy on that and I'm yet to [TS]

00:32:06   resume for to preserve that continuity [TS]

00:32:08   of of space didn't want to break out [TS]

00:32:10   acts within flashbacks exactly the [TS]

00:32:13   flashbacks to defray mechanism and [TS]

00:32:15   there's the action movie which is coming [TS]

00:32:16   out dreams their dream sequences that [TS]

00:32:18   are cheating dream sweet sequences so I [TS]

00:32:20   don't think you're right [TS]

00:32:21   yeah that is outside but i also think [TS]

00:32:23   Wesley telling the story of its time [TS]

00:32:25   the cabin boy establishes a lot about [TS]

00:32:27   his character too I mean he's he's smart [TS]

00:32:30   and he's resilient and he just kind of [TS]

00:32:32   goes with it [TS]

00:32:33   I'll probably kill you in the morning [TS]

00:32:34   sleep well most likely kill you in the [TS]

00:32:36   morning he just delivers that so [TS]

00:32:38   nonchalantly that it's perfect for [TS]

00:32:40   pirates is good [TS]

00:32:41   yeah exactly what I love that he tells [TS]

00:32:43   the whole story right of the inheritance [TS]

00:32:46   of the the mantle of the dread pirate [TS]

00:32:48   roberts my name is Ryan yeah it i love [TS]

00:32:52   the right you know my name is Ryan hired [TS]

00:32:54   the ship from the previous trip pirate [TS]

00:32:56   roberts and he got it from a guy named [TS]

00:32:57   cover button like it's just the real [TS]

00:33:01   robbers be retired 15 years and living [TS]

00:33:03   like a king in Patagonia no it'sit's [TS]

00:33:04   there's something lovely about that [TS]

00:33:06   whole thing and I think you're right it [TS]

00:33:08   does show it shows us a depth to Wesley [TS]

00:33:10   that we don't get from him early on when [TS]

00:33:13   he's just you know the nameless yeah [TS]

00:33:15   these that he's the farm boy right you [TS]

00:33:17   know and so I don't know it's I I love [TS]

00:33:19   him telling the story part of that is [TS]

00:33:21   again Carrie always his charisma in in [TS]

00:33:23   relating the story and the tension the [TS]

00:33:25   tension between them there is actually [TS]

00:33:26   really nice where where he feels that [TS]

00:33:29   she has betrayed him because he assumes [TS]

00:33:31   that her getting married is because [TS]

00:33:33   she's moved on from their true love [TS]

00:33:35   which is not which is not the case [TS]

00:33:37   really because she doesn't like the [TS]

00:33:39   prints but she's agreed to marry him [TS]

00:33:40   because what else you gonna do with [TS]

00:33:42   yourself [TS]

00:33:43   yeah well exactly would that be nice so [TS]

00:33:46   so I like that Dad given taken and she's [TS]

00:33:49   kind of mad because who is this guy and [TS]

00:33:51   she's making light of of her true love [TS]

00:33:54   and he's angry at her because she's you [TS]

00:33:58   know not holding up her side of the deal [TS]

00:34:00   of true love and I in Iowa and then of [TS]

00:34:02   course she figures out but it's a really [TS]

00:34:04   nice little bit of tension between them [TS]

00:34:06   for that one moment so and then go into [TS]

00:34:09   the fire swamp in their giant rats and [TS]

00:34:10   people in giant rat costumes but i never [TS]

00:34:13   understood why that i rotated 12 false [TS]

00:34:16   elements in the book is the rodents of [TS]

00:34:17   unusual size i feel like he was trying [TS]

00:34:19   to get at something with that I don't [TS]

00:34:21   know what it was that he was a parody of [TS]

00:34:23   something I didn't understand he was [TS]

00:34:24   parodying well i think the cliffs of [TS]

00:34:27   insanity or the first time he does that [TS]

00:34:29   he did something is just so ridiculously [TS]

00:34:31   name you know kind of liked [TS]

00:34:32   hyperbolically named and I think for [TS]

00:34:34   cliffs of insanity it works for are you [TS]

00:34:36   rous is I don't think it does i love the [TS]

00:34:39   rous is that is one of the great moments [TS]

00:34:41   of physical slap it's funny but it [TS]

00:34:44   doesn't feel like it's from the universe [TS]

00:34:46   doesn't feel like it's from the story [TS]

00:34:48   the people named the cliffs of insanity [TS]

00:34:49   wouldn't call them rodents of unusual [TS]

00:34:51   size [TS]

00:34:52   yeah but I think that's part of what the [TS]

00:34:53   whole thing is it's kind of all pastiche [TS]

00:34:55   right it's all not quite real or worlds [TS]

00:34:59   that aren't quite don't quite line up [TS]

00:35:02   I feel like getting you don't get like a [TS]

00:35:03   clear idea like even though you know [TS]

00:35:05   sort of history about flora and killed [TS]

00:35:06   or whatever but used to long [TS]

00:35:08   yeah I feel it feels all disjointed like [TS]

00:35:10   a jigsaw piece missing a few puzzles but [TS]

00:35:12   that's actually kind of what i love [TS]

00:35:13   about it is that there are all these [TS]

00:35:15   little hooks in and you makes you wonder [TS]

00:35:16   where did that come from or how is this [TS]

00:35:20   what is this world that we're in here [TS]

00:35:21   where you know it patched together for [TS]

00:35:23   resources [TS]

00:35:24   why'd I think he had a whole bunch of [TS]

00:35:26   tropes he wanted to use I mean he just [TS]

00:35:28   fill the bag with in every kind of [TS]

00:35:31   clichĂ© from fantasy and adventure so we [TS]

00:35:34   have a we have a scary swamped with fire [TS]

00:35:36   and monsters and crazy let's bring it [TS]

00:35:38   back to the bedtime story it's all about [TS]

00:35:40   you know when when you're sitting with [TS]

00:35:42   your children and you're making things [TS]

00:35:43   up you're gonna go all the different [TS]

00:35:46   places from and pull from different [TS]

00:35:48   types of stories and it doesn't doesn't [TS]

00:35:50   necessarily need to fit together after I [TS]

00:35:52   first saw this movie um I ended up i [TS]

00:35:53   think taping it when it was on TV and [TS]

00:35:56   and that was the version that i saw for [TS]

00:35:59   a long time and I still got that version [TS]

00:36:00   better in my head a little bit and one [TS]

00:36:01   of the things that to this day I noticed [TS]

00:36:03   when i watch the DVD now is that BM the [TS]

00:36:06   fire small obscene is where they cut for [TS]

00:36:08   time and and that fire swamp seeing is [TS]

00:36:11   in the movie is in the cut version but [TS]

00:36:13   it is it is a much shortened and i gotta [TS]

00:36:17   say i understand why because the movie [TS]

00:36:19   kind of grinds to a halt it is a [TS]

00:36:22   transitional phase and when they're in [TS]

00:36:23   the swamp before they start sort of the [TS]

00:36:25   next act and you know it [TS]

00:36:28   there-there's you know that all the [TS]

00:36:29   pauses and then there's that they go [TS]

00:36:31   underneath and the wrote walks by which [TS]

00:36:34   they just risky moment yes key moment in [TS]

00:36:37   the film to have both everyone [TS]

00:36:39   off-screen for a moment i remember [TS]

00:36:41   seeing everything the original film we [TS]

00:36:43   watching and I was that this is great [TS]

00:36:45   like there's nobody on screen for a few [TS]

00:36:47   seconds while the tension builds it was [TS]

00:36:49   brilliant well you expect the hand to [TS]

00:36:51   emerge right from the quicksand but you [TS]

00:36:53   don't expect that a giant kind of Muppet [TS]

00:36:55   rat will slowly ample across the screen [TS]

00:36:58   exit then it'll be quiet for a while and [TS]

00:37:00   then the hand but about how many of us [TS]

00:37:02   are super super happy that you know they [TS]

00:37:05   didn't go back in a 25th anniversary [TS]

00:37:07   edition to replace it with a cgi euro/us [TS]

00:37:09   oh shit without like I'm just saying I [TS]

00:37:12   understand why when they cut the movie [TS]

00:37:14   for time that's what they chose to cut [TS]

00:37:15   out no i mean it's it's also the one the [TS]

00:37:17   one seen especially when the Prince [TS]

00:37:19   catches up to him [TS]

00:37:20   I remember the first time I ever saw it [TS]

00:37:22   coincidentally when I was sick on a beta [TS]

00:37:24   player but I'm you were sick on [TS]

00:37:27   automated I was sick and I watch it on [TS]

00:37:29   the beta plan even made a lot of people [TS]

00:37:30   sick [TS]

00:37:31   yes as I heard I know but it's it's the [TS]

00:37:35   one scene where once Wesley his kind of [TS]

00:37:38   revealed all I'm not actually Dread [TS]

00:37:39   Pirate Roberts all of a sudden [TS]

00:37:41   hey he's not quite so badass anymore and [TS]

00:37:44   gets taken pretty much without a fight [TS]

00:37:45   and I remember at that point I'm just [TS]

00:37:47   kind of like we what's going on but he [TS]

00:37:49   was just he was so smart and now he's [TS]

00:37:51   this is this is one of those those [TS]

00:37:53   solder points where they've taken [TS]

00:37:55   they've taken act 1 and now it's like [TS]

00:37:56   all right fire swamp now we got to [TS]

00:37:58   recalibrate and that's the second whole [TS]

00:38:00   movement of this movie which is he's [TS]

00:38:02   trapped and they got and then he's dead [TS]

00:38:04   and they gotta rescue him and she's you [TS]

00:38:05   know waiting for the fastest ships to to [TS]

00:38:08   to bring backward of him which is you [TS]

00:38:12   know it's the i would argue maybe the [TS]

00:38:14   weakest of the three kind of sections of [TS]

00:38:16   the movie III and there's some this is [TS]

00:38:18   where it gets a little little Mel Brooks [TS]

00:38:20   e to me not just with despair exactly so [TS]

00:38:24   I don't even think about trying to [TS]

00:38:26   escape [TS]

00:38:27   yeah yeah we've got that we've got the [TS]

00:38:28   pit of despair and we've got the guy [TS]

00:38:30   down there who is right out of a mel [TS]

00:38:31   brooks movie and boys thought that was [TS]

00:38:33   robbie coltrane the first time I saw [TS]

00:38:34   them like probably Coltrane no I'm going [TS]

00:38:37   to early and that the tree with the door [TS]

00:38:40   and ends that secret [TS]

00:38:42   yeah it's just it's it's a funny little [TS]

00:38:45   part of the movie and and it's necessary [TS]

00:38:47   but you know the torture equipment the [TS]

00:38:50   life I've actually had that done to me [TS]

00:38:52   you had years more why we stopped off [TS]

00:38:56   i'm going to an acupuncturist have an [TS]

00:38:57   acupuncturist they've put a million [TS]

00:39:00   little glass cups on my back and lit [TS]

00:39:02   fires on top of them decide [TS]

00:39:03   they're out feels great but it looks [TS]

00:39:05   remarkably like well and I hate to tell [TS]

00:39:07   you that wasn't an active practice does [TS]

00:39:11   explain the wealth though [TS]

00:39:12   mm that's why you pulled a little lever [TS]

00:39:15   and then water comes out and my wife had [TS]

00:39:17   been beaten with oranges I do i do [TS]

00:39:19   actually like Adam I like that scene [TS]

00:39:21   where they crank up the the and and even [TS]

00:39:24   count Rugen says no not 100 or whatever [TS]

00:39:28   it is 50 [TS]

00:39:29   yeah and they and they are and he's his [TS]

00:39:32   scream can be heard throughout the [TS]

00:39:33   kingdom [TS]

00:39:33   I i like that the the event the man in [TS]

00:39:36   black is feeling it now that is the pit [TS]

00:39:38   of despair buttercup cannot hear no no [TS]

00:39:42   so she's wearing her headphones so but [TS]

00:39:45   it does it after they after they kill [TS]

00:39:47   the kill the kill the man in black is a [TS]

00:39:49   great interlude with them [TS]

00:39:51   Fred Savage was very upset because you [TS]

00:39:53   know we can't be and then there's a [TS]

00:39:54   really nice bit of narrative twist in [TS]

00:39:56   there where where I'm Peter Falk says [TS]

00:39:58   nothing happens to 22 the Prince he he [TS]

00:40:02   lives 2000 jeez grampa what are you [TS]

00:40:05   doing why you telling me this story [TS]

00:40:06   added that is a great that is a great [TS]

00:40:09   scene because it's that defying of all [TS]

00:40:12   of the rules you know sometimes bad [TS]

00:40:14   people get away right and so it's that [TS]

00:40:16   whole to find breaking all the rules of [TS]

00:40:18   the fairytale at that point you know you [TS]

00:40:20   kill the hero and you you know you have [TS]

00:40:23   the bad guys or waltzes and it's great i [TS]

00:40:26   love the same same with the screaming [TS]

00:40:28   deals where he says she doesn't die at [TS]

00:40:30   this time she doesn't get my deals its [TS]

00:40:32   let's just say because you looked a [TS]

00:40:33   little more attention to fuse all that [TS]

00:40:35   tension we're not gonna don't worry [TS]

00:40:36   about it so they they they revealed that [TS]

00:40:37   upfront which is which is a really funny [TS]

00:40:40   and then so then he's dead and we get [TS]

00:40:43   the the class leader classic is but it [TS]

00:40:45   turns out he's only mostly dead me and [TS]

00:40:47   we get that the scenes with with the [TS]

00:40:49   physic and indigo taking the men in [TS]

00:40:52   black [TS]

00:40:52   after after an ego is is a is has water [TS]

00:40:56   poured over him by desert because he's [TS]

00:40:58   part of the brute squad you want to brew [TS]

00:41:00   system is the risk and then what a great [TS]

00:41:03   another great example of cary elwes is a [TS]

00:41:04   physical actors i love that whole bits [TS]

00:41:06   with him you know where he can't walk [TS]

00:41:08   basically because he's just getting his [TS]

00:41:09   strength back [TS]

00:41:10   he flops his head from side to side with [TS]

00:41:13   whatever I mean he's left over the [TS]

00:41:15   parapet and they slide them up in his [TS]

00:41:17   head completely lost slides of hope the [TS]

00:41:20   cops we can see it in like that should [TS]

00:41:22   be physically impossible [TS]

00:41:23   it's like defend but it's it's hilarious [TS]

00:41:26   is great to watch and that whole scene [TS]

00:41:27   where he's trying to come up with a plan [TS]

00:41:29   if only we had a holocaust clue like [TS]

00:41:32   what why wasn't i wasn't listed among [TS]

00:41:34   the things that we had another [TS]

00:41:35   wheelbarrow i will burst it among our [TS]

00:41:37   resources to help find out having a [TS]

00:41:39   rodent i'm not i'm still not really [TS]

00:41:42   clear on how wheeling Andre the Giant in [TS]

00:41:44   a wheelbarrow with a big cloak and and [TS]

00:41:47   lighting him on fire is the it was the [TS]

00:41:49   reputation of the dread pirate roberts [TS]

00:41:51   yeah the dread pirate roberts I know it [TS]

00:41:54   wasn't tall enough he wasn't told that [TS]

00:41:56   by himself [TS]

00:41:57   that's right under the giant giant [TS]

00:41:58   enough quite so so they get into the [TS]

00:42:01   they that with the use of what gate key [TS]

00:42:04   oh you mean this gate key they get into [TS]

00:42:07   his arms off quickly i forgot because [TS]

00:42:11   they get into the castle and then we [TS]

00:42:14   have our you know that that's all part [TS]

00:42:16   of this last act which is the the rescue [TS]

00:42:18   of butter cup in and you're right [TS]

00:42:21   cary elwes is fantastic because [TS]

00:42:23   throughout this he's holding onto suits [TS]

00:42:26   of armor and laying on a bed completely [TS]

00:42:28   flat and is he's our hero and he's [TS]

00:42:32   completely incapable of doing anything [TS]

00:42:34   he's as weak as a kitten throughout it's [TS]

00:42:36   a little-bitty hill at that moment to [TS]

00:42:38   people or English bedroom farce it's [TS]

00:42:39   like people are running down hallways [TS]

00:42:41   people come by people are stabbed doors [TS]

00:42:43   open and shut [TS]

00:42:45   people are certainly where they [TS]

00:42:46   shouldn't be in beds like it buttercup [TS]

00:42:48   throws herself on Cary Elwes and on the [TS]

00:42:51   right that says what Leslie what's I [TS]

00:42:54   actually love when when count Rugen so [TS]

00:42:57   so you know gives his speech and can't [TS]

00:42:59   ruin runs away which is hilarious [TS]

00:43:02   what I really love and and didn't notice [TS]

00:43:05   for a while about that scene but now [TS]

00:43:07   I've seen it so many times I noticed [TS]

00:43:08   everything is is I love mandy patinkin [TS]

00:43:12   is panic when count Rugen runs away and [TS]

00:43:15   he can't go after him because the door [TS]

00:43:17   is closed heat and there's a scene where [TS]

00:43:19   he's he's smashing against the door and [TS]

00:43:21   shouting and it is so well played he [TS]

00:43:24   shouting Fezzik physics and he's [TS]

00:43:26   desperate for physics to come and like [TS]

00:43:29   he does because he's a giant knockdown [TS]

00:43:30   the door because this is his moment and [TS]

00:43:32   and the guy is getting away and it's you [TS]

00:43:34   know again a little bit of that [TS]

00:43:35   emotional realism injected in this [TS]

00:43:37   ridiculous scene that's happening now [TS]

00:43:39   it's a great that's also a very moment I [TS]

00:43:41   also love the the final showdown between [TS]

00:43:42   wesleyan and humperdinck with both [TS]

00:43:45   because I think they both get both both [TS]

00:43:48   I carry always in Chris around and head [TS]

00:43:50   have such a great presence in that scene [TS]

00:43:52   where you know I'm predict to the death [TS]

00:43:54   note to the pain and he sort of has that [TS]

00:43:57   pause i'm not quite familiar with that [TS]

00:43:59   because you know but explaining and [TS]

00:44:02   that's what the pig comes in we sure [TS]

00:44:03   that your warhol he's going he's going [TS]

00:44:05   to use small words so that you'll [TS]

00:44:07   understand he's going all in because he [TS]

00:44:09   knows that he can't you know he doesn't [TS]

00:44:12   have any strength or at least not enough [TS]

00:44:14   strange lately more than just lift his [TS]

00:44:16   arm so he's got a late he's got a blade [TS]

00:44:19   he's playing place right through it [TS]

00:44:21   that's right so he blamed this all the [TS]

00:44:23   way up to that point where he can do is [TS]

00:44:24   one physical move [TS]

00:44:26   drop your sword drop your and it's great [TS]

00:44:30   and then he lives of course because [TS]

00:44:32   we've been told he lives that's not the [TS]

00:44:34   point the point is that is that he's [TS]

00:44:36   humiliated yeah that's right and that [TS]

00:44:38   Wesley and and and butter cop go off [TS]

00:44:41   together on there otherwise lets you say [TS]

00:44:43   butter color copies but this is equal to [TS]

00:44:45   Rho ok no with the seagull the RoboCup [TS]

00:44:48   she's get it right now Wesley and butter [TS]

00:44:52   got go off buttercup buttercup buttercup [TS]

00:44:54   buttercup back up buttercup there [TS]

00:44:57   Leslie and Buttercup go off together on [TS]

00:45:00   four white horses that seem to have been [TS]

00:45:03   found somewhere in the stables by andre [TS]

00:45:05   the giant designate found these [TS]

00:45:07   warehouses [TS]

00:45:08   that's right i think there are four of [TS]

00:45:09   us if we find a big hello lady that's [TS]

00:45:13   how fairytales work is if you need to [TS]

00:45:14   resolve the story of course there is a [TS]

00:45:16   horse there are and why would you how [TS]

00:45:18   would you in the story anyway other than [TS]

00:45:19   riding with them riding off into the [TS]

00:45:21   sunrise in this case on four white [TS]

00:45:23   horses flying dragons [TS]

00:45:25   oh yeah oh I have to say one of the ways [TS]

00:45:28   that this movie has gotten into my head [TS]

00:45:31   is that in reading the george RR martin [TS]

00:45:33   fantasy series starts with a game of [TS]

00:45:36   thrones i actually can't picture a [TS]

00:45:40   really nefarious character Jaime [TS]

00:45:42   Lannister the sort of stuff sorry [TS]

00:45:44   yes i can't iive cast Chris Sarandon is [TS]

00:45:46   Jaime Lannister hope but he's no but I [TS]

00:45:49   I'm sorry that's the part that's for [TS]

00:45:50   another podcast it's kind of a date is [TS]

00:45:52   kind of ridiculous and yet because that [TS]

00:45:54   guy's really is will be evil but at the [TS]

00:45:56   same time well let's just say it's the [TS]

00:45:58   greatest role chris sarandon has never [TS]

00:45:59   played percentage of the eric roberts of [TS]

00:46:02   his particular yes that's right because [TS]

00:46:04   it's just his sister is really famous [TS]

00:46:06   but now I just because when i started [TS]

00:46:08   reading those books i thought well this [TS]

00:46:09   is a this is a real kind of stuffed [TS]

00:46:11   shirt prince and the problem is he's not [TS]

00:46:13   and I it's got me into trouble where [TS]

00:46:15   again Chris Sarandon is being inhabited [TS]

00:46:17   by a much better actor i suppose in my [TS]

00:46:19   in my mind the old skull cinema while [TS]

00:46:21   we're playing the george RR martin i'm [TS]

00:46:23   sure it'll when the guy from New [TS]

00:46:24   Amsterdam plays a minium in the TV [TS]

00:46:27   series on HBO then i won't that'll [TS]

00:46:30   that'll wipe it down and we'll get that [TS]

00:46:31   for you or maybe you'll be sitting there [TS]

00:46:33   saying I think Chris array antenna he [TS]

00:46:35   would have been perfect when you years [TS]

00:46:37   ago have to do a podcast in April when [TS]

00:46:39   the show comes out [TS]

00:46:40   do you think yeah but THX installed in [TS]

00:46:44   your skull cinema because i really [TS]

00:46:45   should work enough grade [TS]

00:46:47   no i only have that my real cinema my [TS]

00:46:49   school had this is gary undergo be fine [TS]

00:46:51   when inside your head [TS]

00:46:52   well you know I can I my two years are [TS]

00:46:55   perfectly good at listening to 5.1 so [TS]

00:46:57   why wouldn't I just make it in my head [TS]

00:46:59   too [TS]

00:46:59   I don't have 5.1 years Glenn not yet not [TS]

00:47:04   yet but maybe some of the features here [TS]

00:47:06   what else I want to talk about here I [TS]

00:47:07   think so Rob Reiner directed this movie [TS]

00:47:10   TVs meathead by the way back when he [TS]

00:47:14   directed good movie yes yes so so here's [TS]

00:47:16   the funny thing [TS]

00:47:17   this is one in a string of movies there [TS]

00:47:20   was a point when Rob Reiner had directed [TS]

00:47:22   something like six or seven movies in a [TS]

00:47:24   row all of which were good movies [TS]

00:47:28   beautiful story extend by me very much [TS]

00:47:31   this is this is spinal tap followed by [TS]

00:47:33   the sure thing followed by stand by me [TS]

00:47:36   followed by the princess bride followed [TS]

00:47:38   by when harry met sally followed by [TS]

00:47:40   misery followed by a few good man [TS]

00:47:43   well I think that was the shit i think [TS]

00:47:45   that that's the chain i might be missing [TS]

00:47:46   one in there enough for anyone life I [TS]

00:47:48   well and that's good because that was it [TS]

00:47:50   and it just went yeah but then he made [TS]

00:47:53   North but um [TS]

00:47:55   but it's also i should i should mention [TS]

00:47:57   we have Billy Crystal who went on to be [TS]

00:48:00   the leading man in his next movie when [TS]

00:48:01   harry met sally and also appeared in a [TS]

00:48:04   small cameo in this is spinal tap and [TS]

00:48:07   christopher guest from this is spinal [TS]

00:48:09   tap and who's going to make on all these [TS]

00:48:11   other mockumentaries is of course count [TS]

00:48:13   Rugen the six-fingered man so their [TS]

00:48:14   little bits of of the of the team from [TS]

00:48:17   these other movies of Rob writers who [TS]

00:48:19   have dropped into the princess bride but [TS]

00:48:21   what I want to run that that was for him [TS]

00:48:23   and some really different kinds of [TS]

00:48:24   movies i mean it's so many different [TS]

00:48:26   genres he did and yeah and then that was [TS]

00:48:28   it because he has made a good movie [TS]

00:48:29   since it's the same it's the same with [TS]

00:48:30   William Goldman who's had an amazing [TS]

00:48:32   writing career just across a whole bunch [TS]

00:48:35   of different genres just just pick [TS]

00:48:38   cherry-picking here Butch Cassidy and [TS]

00:48:39   the Sundance Kid Stepford Wives Marathon [TS]

00:48:41   Man bridge too far misery maverick the [TS]

00:48:44   ghost in the darkness they're not all [TS]

00:48:46   terrific movies so he is so screenwriter [TS]

00:48:49   of misery that's interesting so we we [TS]

00:48:50   teamed with Ron Goldman Goldman didn't [TS]

00:48:53   he write that terrible book about John [TS]

00:48:54   Lana don't think so [TS]

00:48:56   no he wrote he wrote a nonfiction book [TS]

00:48:58   called adventures in the screen trade [TS]

00:49:00   that supposed to be terrific when I [TS]

00:49:01   haven't read it out that is I don't read [TS]

00:49:03   it but I has been highly recommended to [TS]

00:49:04   me as well that may be the guy who wrote [TS]

00:49:07   princess bride the book and the [TS]

00:49:08   screenplay also wrote Marathon Man the [TS]

00:49:10   book and the screenplay and all the prep [TS]

00:49:12   all the programs man i don't see how one [TS]

00:49:14   guide masters those two Chandra's just [TS]

00:49:17   just so wildly diverse in both such high [TS]

00:49:20   quality was he also an actor on a 70 [TS]

00:49:23   sitcom because that would give him the [TS]

00:49:24   traction now you need Ron Howard for the [TS]

00:49:27   and yeah we know we get skipped over [TS]

00:49:29   miracle max in our chronological [TS]

00:49:32   condition film we talked about him [TS]

00:49:33   online chile we briefly touched on on [TS]

00:49:37   him it's one scene it's a memorable [TS]

00:49:39   scene although true but to believe we [TS]

00:49:41   all quote to believe which means to [TS]

00:49:43   block laiĂ¡ laiĂ¡ laiĂ¡ it because he [TS]

00:49:45   just doesn't miracle max is very grumpy [TS]

00:49:47   because he got fired by Prince [TS]

00:49:49   Humperdinck you know you talk about the [TS]

00:49:50   center part of the movie where things [TS]

00:49:52   get kind of slap sticky and miracle max [TS]

00:49:55   and and billy crystal and Carol Kane [TS]

00:49:58   just they they epitomise that for me [TS]

00:50:00   that you just didn't get in with the [TS]

00:50:02   rest of the movie it's the mel brooks [TS]

00:50:04   portion of the movie and and the and the [TS]

00:50:05   and the albino and the the torture [TS]

00:50:07   machine and [TS]

00:50:08   on that and although it's all in the [TS]

00:50:10   book is the funny plastic I mean it was [TS]

00:50:12   off it was accurately converted to the [TS]

00:50:15   screen to something a bit funnier and [TS]

00:50:17   much much briefer than in the book but [TS]

00:50:20   everybody everybody remembers it right [TS]

00:50:21   everybody relax Billy Crystal and using [TS]

00:50:23   iMovie for what three minutes [TS]

00:50:25   well and in some ways you can argue it [TS]

00:50:27   works because it doesn't work [TS]

00:50:28   I mean big again I come back to that [TS]

00:50:30   idea of okay well because because of [TS]

00:50:33   everything every nothing fits in this [TS]

00:50:35   movie it feels like to me and yet that [TS]

00:50:37   that is kind of the one thing that [TS]

00:50:38   having it all have in common is that [TS]

00:50:41   it's all drawn from all these these [TS]

00:50:42   places it's all this patchwork quilt and [TS]

00:50:45   yet it's something where each individual [TS]

00:50:47   piece might not seem like it works but [TS]

00:50:49   for some reason when they come together [TS]

00:50:51   it creates something larger than the sum [TS]

00:50:54   of its parts [TS]

00:50:55   um ok then so what you're saying really [TS]

00:50:59   now you disagree what you're saying is [TS]

00:51:01   that it because it doesn't fit [TS]

00:51:03   that's why it fits well didn't they have [TS]

00:51:06   sex mackey died in there and so they [TS]

00:51:08   pull out Billy Crystal I mean it was [TS]

00:51:09   eating the book to it's like if you're [TS]

00:51:11   you're hopeless the marriage is about to [TS]

00:51:13   happen your main character is dead and [TS]

00:51:15   Goldman pulls out this completely you [TS]

00:51:18   know ridiculous things always a wizard [TS]

00:51:19   so he makes the wizard you know as long [TS]

00:51:21   as you're being ridiculous go full-on [TS]

00:51:23   ridiculous [TS]

00:51:24   yeah right i mean of course the thing is [TS]

00:51:25   he was already screenwriter at that [TS]

00:51:26   point so the question is how much of the [TS]

00:51:28   book was written with the notion he may [TS]

00:51:30   have had Billy Crystal in mind for all [TS]

00:51:32   we know for that point because it's not [TS]

00:51:34   in 1974 [TS]

00:51:35   yeah it was that all yeah only crystal [TS]

00:51:38   wasn't even on so my goodness okay and I [TS]

00:51:42   withdraw I can kind of i'll edit that [TS]

00:51:45   out jacketing yes please leave it all [TS]

00:51:47   inconvenient wrong opinions from this [TS]

00:51:49   podcast I can kind of see it though I [TS]

00:51:51   mean the beauty of the movie being so [TS]

00:51:54   many different things is that it can [TS]

00:51:55   appeal to so many different people as [TS]

00:51:57   well so i can see that in a way being [TS]

00:52:00   towards the more not lowbrow humor set [TS]

00:52:03   because it's not it's not really lowbrow [TS]

00:52:05   humor but the mel brooks part of the [TS]

00:52:07   audience who wants who want those quotes [TS]

00:52:10   to say at their you know their parties [TS]

00:52:12   at least no farting history or cover a [TS]

00:52:15   crotch shot small miracles see have you [TS]

00:52:18   i don't know if my tone gave give this [TS]

00:52:20   away but I'm not [TS]

00:52:21   take Mel Brooks fan actually he said it [TS]

00:52:23   depends on the area i mean he made some [TS]

00:52:25   producers is one of the funniest movies [TS]

00:52:26   ever made but I could really stand right [TS]

00:52:29   blazing saddles and sandals yeah we [TS]

00:52:31   gettin our blazing cells grateful [TS]

00:52:33   blazing saddles I mean this is like [TS]

00:52:35   about TV editing there are so many films [TS]

00:52:37   from the eighties seventies and eighties [TS]

00:52:38   that were ruined for us who grew up in [TS]

00:52:40   the eighties and nineties because we saw [TS]

00:52:44   them on television they were butchered [TS]

00:52:45   the point of recognizability so I didn't [TS]

00:52:47   understand funny blazing saddles was [TS]

00:52:49   until I saw it unedited again I think [TS]

00:52:51   the Blazing Saddles episode will be one [TS]

00:52:53   of those great episodes where Dan Morgan [TS]

00:52:54   is the host because i'm not talking [TS]

00:52:57   about [TS]

00:52:57   I I don't need that movie to waste any [TS]

00:52:59   more of my life I saw the case on the [TS]

00:53:01   campfire scene on TV where they just [TS]

00:53:03   damp the sound down to zero it made no [TS]

00:53:06   sense whatsoever mr. fine there is that [TS]

00:53:09   but slim pickins slim pickins live down [TS]

00:53:13   lived in the town where I grew up under [TS]

00:53:16   the giant you have school by samuel [TS]

00:53:19   beckett i like it i have Fred Savage in [TS]

00:53:21   my closet that's where he's been that's [TS]

00:53:25   how this game works and speak actually [TS]

00:53:27   Peter Falk is still alive or no yes [TS]

00:53:31   because what i want is it's like [TS]

00:53:33   funnyordie to get Fred Savage and peter [TS]

00:53:35   falk together to re-record their son [TS]

00:53:38   please together would be awesome when [TS]

00:53:41   Goldman still alive know right they [TS]

00:53:42   would they would rerecord the scene [TS]

00:53:43   except Peter Falk would be reading [TS]

00:53:45   something horrible with a they could [TS]

00:53:48   just cut it straight into the movie as [TS]

00:53:50   it is it's it's part of the criterion is [TS]

00:53:52   they've recorded just those seen to [TS]

00:53:54   update them that's the only dated part [TS]

00:53:55   of the movie [TS]

00:53:56   Peter Falk is in the nursing home and [TS]

00:53:58   Fred Savage is reading history that's [TS]

00:54:00   touching the penthouse that makes me sad [TS]

00:54:06   that's like the ending of big fish [TS]

00:54:07   captain bring-down making everybody sad [TS]

00:54:11   at the end of a podcast about the happy [TS]

00:54:14   movie that everyone looks okay i want to [TS]

00:54:16   go around the the room and asked [TS]

00:54:18   everybody for since this is the most [TS]

00:54:21   quotable movie in the universe [TS]

00:54:24   my question to you since this movie is [TS]

00:54:25   so incredibly quotable and this is the [TS]
