39: Bigger on the Inside

00:00:00   the incomparable product test number 39 [TS]

00:00:09   may 2011 we're back on the hospital with [TS]

00:00:14   another of our flash podcasts talking [TS]

00:00:17   about the season of doctor who and [TS]

00:00:18   tonight we are going to talk about the [TS]

00:00:21   latest installment an episode called the [TS]

00:00:23   doctor's wife by renowned writer of [TS]

00:00:26   comics and novels and TV and movies and [TS]

00:00:30   all sorts of other things you know I [TS]

00:00:32   don't know songs stage plays poems [TS]

00:00:35   comics ice economics he actually gets [TS]

00:00:38   done bro he wrote a lot of them so we [TS]

00:00:40   should say it twice [TS]

00:00:41   yeah exactly i'm here right here's a [TS]

00:00:43   Twitter feed Neil Neil Gaiman wrote this [TS]

00:00:46   episode the doctor's wife and so join me [TS]

00:00:49   today as you may have heard to talk [TS]

00:00:51   about it we have damn Ouran High Dam [TS]

00:00:54   sandwiches [TS]

00:00:55   Glenn fleischmann how do and Scott [TS]

00:00:58   McNulty hello hello i enjoy how you say [TS]

00:01:02   hello [TS]

00:01:03   thank you it's very exciting very [TS]

00:01:07   energetic which I like enthusiasm is [TS]

00:01:09   good so the doctor's wife this is [TS]

00:01:11   perhaps in some ways the most hyped [TS]

00:01:13   episode single episode of doctor who and [TS]

00:01:17   what it's in a long time i mean i think [TS]

00:01:19   if you take the sort of regenerations [TS]

00:01:22   and and season premieres and things like [TS]

00:01:24   that out of it just as a run-of-the-mill [TS]

00:01:26   standalone episode largely because it's [TS]

00:01:29   neil gaiman and he's got quite a [TS]

00:01:30   following himself but it you know the [TS]

00:01:35   fact is no matter whose name is on the [TS]

00:01:37   credits it's still an episode of Doctor [TS]

00:01:39   Who and it's something that needs to be [TS]

00:01:41   judged on its own merits i'm curious [TS]

00:01:43   what you guys what you guys thought [TS]

00:01:46   where you mean the hype was so huge that [TS]

00:01:48   it's kinda I felt on one level was going [TS]

00:01:50   to really hard for this episode to live [TS]

00:01:51   up to the hype and had a titillating [TS]

00:01:54   title right now just life [TS]

00:01:56   add me as it turns out was kind of a red [TS]

00:01:59   herring in some ways I you know I go [TS]

00:02:01   further and say that I think I think it [TS]

00:02:03   was a terrible title i think that it was [TS]

00:02:05   a title that was chosen for marketing or [TS]

00:02:08   services especially for the British [TS]

00:02:09   media to get all you know tutor about [TS]

00:02:13   and go home [TS]

00:02:13   what does it mean to lead people astray [TS]

00:02:15   and when i when i read that one of the [TS]

00:02:17   other titles for it was bigger on the [TS]

00:02:18   inside i thought well that's your title [TS]

00:02:21   while the original title apparently was [TS]

00:02:23   the house of nut house of night is also [TS]

00:02:24   which is also pretty good I thought yeah [TS]

00:02:26   it's it's not appetizing pocket if it's [TS]

00:02:28   got something going on there [TS]

00:02:29   yeah the way it didn't I knew that going [TS]

00:02:31   in when i watch the episode I thought [TS]

00:02:33   that's not a great title for could have [TS]

00:02:35   called it behind the blue door as well [TS]

00:02:36   huh might have had some connotation [TS]

00:02:39   problems a lot of bigger on the inside [TS]

00:02:41   and around the inside i think that would [TS]

00:02:43   know that one of its a little it's a [TS]

00:02:45   little flip it's a little flip for them [TS]

00:02:48   yeah i feel i thought i'd have basically [TS]

00:02:50   no game and wrote a two-part christmas [TS]

00:02:51   episode and they managed to squeeze into [TS]

00:02:53   42 minutes or 48 minutes might have been [TS]

00:02:56   better and I might even better in a [TS]

00:02:57   Christmas episode VII I think that I i [TS]

00:03:00   don't mean it's bad but like I felt I [TS]

00:03:02   felt like there was so much that there [TS]

00:03:03   needed to be you know and I know that [TS]

00:03:06   they cut a bunch of stuff out [TS]

00:03:07   I mean like obviously you always do that [TS]

00:03:09   but I know specifically in this case the [TS]

00:03:11   machines that were cut out and I guess I [TS]

00:03:13   felt like again maybe part of this is [TS]

00:03:15   just coming up to the hype and i find [TS]

00:03:16   that often with things that are really [TS]

00:03:17   hyped like this my first watching is not [TS]

00:03:20   a good not as positive because of the [TS]

00:03:23   hype and then after I've already seen it [TS]

00:03:25   was declared never seen it you know i [TS]

00:03:27   have to worry about the hype but i [TS]

00:03:28   haven't had a chance to rewatch it so [TS]

00:03:29   but apparently i live under a rock [TS]

00:03:31   because the first time i heard of that [TS]

00:03:33   this was even going to be like a hyped [TS]

00:03:36   thing was last week when i was on [TS]

00:03:37   another incomparable and someone mention [TS]

00:03:40   that neil gaiman had Roach doctor who [TS]

00:03:43   episode was like I should probably watch [TS]

00:03:44   the hockey ball week who I'd been in [TS]

00:03:48   there are villa in Afghanistan but I i [TS]

00:03:53   thought was pretty good i mean i think [TS]

00:03:55   one was saying about it kind of feeling [TS]

00:03:57   like a Christmas episode is right on [TS]

00:03:59   because you know you know gaming rights [TS]

00:04:01   kind of like fairytale s kind of things [TS]

00:04:03   and I think that that kind of feeling [TS]

00:04:05   came through the episode i think it had [TS]

00:04:08   it had that same kind of had more whimsy [TS]

00:04:11   they're used to in this sort of [TS]

00:04:12   Mythology episodes of the show that you [TS]

00:04:15   know chasing the big plot arc for the [TS]

00:04:17   season and I mean I like it had you know [TS]

00:04:19   it had the death the Time Lords [TS]

00:04:21   references had humanity that little bit [TS]

00:04:23   i should listen to matt smith four times [TS]

00:04:25   figure out what he was saying [TS]

00:04:27   when he says to him you want to be [TS]

00:04:29   forgiven don't you and he said don't we [TS]

00:04:31   all but I couldn't make it out it was [TS]

00:04:33   bloody have trouble with keep mumbles a [TS]

00:04:35   lot [TS]

00:04:36   yeah i got that a previous episode oh [TS]

00:04:38   yeah but I thought you said big themes [TS]

00:04:41   that had the righteous Time Lord you [TS]

00:04:44   know righteous Time Lord it had a madman [TS]

00:04:47   with the box i don't have the box [TS]

00:04:49   anymore which is which is great so he's [TS]

00:04:51   left to entirely his own devices and [TS]

00:04:54   then he goes all MacGyver so he built [TS]

00:04:55   stuff out of nothing which we love with [TS]

00:04:57   the doctor has to work without having [TS]

00:04:59   his TARDIS with him but he hasn't [TS]

00:04:59   started with them and then you have [TS]

00:05:02   worrying Amy screaming running down [TS]

00:05:04   hallways which is always good almost [TS]

00:05:05   falling down pits anytime you have [TS]

00:05:07   characters almost falling down pits [TS]

00:05:08   great episode [TS]

00:05:09   alright you don't worry dies so just i [TS]

00:05:11   know i would you got it wasn't gonna [TS]

00:05:14   happen through I got to be going like at [TS]

00:05:17   least even killed him with aa realize [TS]

00:05:20   that I didn't remember that you're so [TS]

00:05:21   right i was but he's just gonna be rain [TS]

00:05:24   Joe because he actually died every [TS]

00:05:25   episode behind the first episode this [TS]

00:05:27   season to order a terrible he died the [TS]

00:05:30   second but can they go so far around [TS]

00:05:32   that becomes funny again I'd like that [TS]

00:05:35   worried also you have criticized [TS]

00:05:37   worrying previous episodes I think [TS]

00:05:38   Arthur Darvill is a is a perfectly fine [TS]

00:05:41   actor and their moments and illegal [TS]

00:05:43   yeah it pulls it out of times but this [TS]

00:05:45   thing about they've actually the point [TS]

00:05:46   he's a nurse and I i actually the [TS]

00:05:48   moments where he's actually professional [TS]

00:05:49   you're like oh he's not just some guy [TS]

00:05:51   you know amy was like most of the [TS]

00:05:53   Companions of doctor takes are aimless [TS]

00:05:56   people then figure out the way the world [TS]

00:05:57   they're not as directed Martha Jones [TS]

00:05:59   maybe notwithstanding soundtrack to be a [TS]

00:06:01   doctor and she fell into running along [TS]

00:06:03   with other people don't know whether way [TS]

00:06:05   and he's like he's got a profession is a [TS]

00:06:07   nurse she does job damn well and when [TS]

00:06:09   they actually need medical help [TS]

00:06:10   he's there and I actually like the fact [TS]

00:06:12   that the Rory you know he could he when [TS]

00:06:14   he turned off the shield's he was the [TS]

00:06:16   telepathic interface you know all the [TS]

00:06:18   things that actually the pretty one [TS]

00:06:19   he's thinking I agree with good i really [TS]

00:06:22   i mean i think i think he hasn't even [TS]

00:06:25   given a like a fair shake basically and [TS]

00:06:27   I and I think it was nice to see him get [TS]

00:06:28   much more stuff to do in this episode [TS]

00:06:30   and I feel like he's that I feel like [TS]

00:06:33   he's a good character who is then [TS]

00:06:36   misused as a plot device [TS]

00:06:38   I mean I really I and that's where the [TS]

00:06:39   deaths come [TS]

00:06:40   and I think that although you know what [TS]

00:06:41   you know there was a nice touch in this [TS]

00:06:43   episode i thought was in that that scene [TS]

00:06:46   where they have to telepathically unlock [TS]

00:06:48   the door to the control room and she and [TS]

00:06:50   Amy thinks about what these you know [TS]

00:06:53   those those words mean to her right and [TS]

00:06:55   the scene was a joy where she had [TS]

00:06:58   enlarged their lights yeah delight your [TS]

00:06:59   pictures your wedding right which is I [TS]

00:07:02   thought was a nice touch it was not [TS]

00:07:03   because it's one of those things that it [TS]

00:07:06   was a subtle reinforcement of their [TS]

00:07:08   relationship and we've seen a lot of [TS]

00:07:09   like late-night your fit right and so it [TS]

00:07:12   was nice to see that like oh that's [TS]

00:07:14   that's the way it should be right like [TS]

00:07:16   that's the relationship we want to root [TS]

00:07:17   for is the one that's that sort of you [TS]

00:07:20   know that's solid and they can't be [TS]

00:07:21   holding a bigger wedge for us to his [TS]

00:07:23   time goes on it's like now Amy's already [TS]

00:07:25   you know sort of over the doctor not [TS]

00:07:26   always sure but we're getting further [TS]

00:07:28   and further away from that and now it's [TS]

00:07:29   like she's like oh oh you're in love [TS]

00:07:31   with the TARDIS and you always have been [TS]

00:07:33   and of course she's always with you and [TS]

00:07:35   now she's been personified so that wedge [TS]

00:07:37   gets even broader there's not like less [TS]

00:07:39   and less of a romantic thing over time [TS]

00:07:42   yeah 3 people who tardis is one too many [TS]

00:07:46   it's probably a good rule of thumb [TS]

00:07:49   that's not a picture I mean there's also [TS]

00:07:51   some there is some great dialogue [TS]

00:07:52   especially I thought the interactions [TS]

00:07:54   between the doctor in the TARDIS were [TS]

00:07:57   for the most part that was the part I [TS]

00:07:58   enjoyed I don't think the plot I didn't [TS]

00:08:00   pay much attention to in some ways [TS]

00:08:02   well minutes they need to stop a even [TS]

00:08:04   they even admit that the the root of [TS]

00:08:06   this story is just what if the TARDIS [TS]

00:08:08   were personified and that's what this [TS]

00:08:09   episode is it's the doctor gets the one [TS]

00:08:11   chance to interact with the TARDIS and [TS]

00:08:14   actually talk with her in a bit of a [TS]

00:08:17   comic book filled from that standpoint [TS]

00:08:19   is I haven't allowed the Doctor Who [TS]

00:08:20   comics I think they're sort of thin but [TS]

00:08:23   the ones i read our little more like [TS]

00:08:25   this there's a lot of what if things [TS]

00:08:26   that are hard to do on screen I [TS]

00:08:29   understand the radio plays a bit like [TS]

00:08:30   that as well where it's things that like [TS]

00:08:32   it would cost such a fortune to do the s [TS]

00:08:35   that this ssei for it so they can't do [TS]

00:08:38   it then attended do so they have stories [TS]

00:08:40   that play out the comic books and same [TS]

00:08:41   thing here like there are aspects of [TS]

00:08:43   this that that they figure way to do [TS]

00:08:46   this without it being expensive but [TS]

00:08:48   being interesting in the same kind of [TS]

00:08:49   what-if scenario apparently it's quite [TS]

00:08:51   it was quite extreme [TS]

00:08:52   and some which is what has this season [TS]

00:08:53   instead of last they ran out of money [TS]

00:08:54   last year that's funny [TS]

00:08:56   you got a real game and talking about [TS]

00:08:58   all the scenes they caught on the [TS]

00:08:59   specimens in the special features but [TS]

00:09:01   yeah i'm wondering that's why i say that [TS]

00:09:03   did feel like a spectacular that they [TS]

00:09:05   pulled off i mean i think it had a I [TS]

00:09:07   think it a good through-line I think [TS]

00:09:09   it's some good like B&C plots to it I [TS]

00:09:11   thought it was very very neil gaiman [TS]

00:09:13   dish without violating the canon of the [TS]

00:09:15   universe but it wasn't a more to that [TS]

00:09:17   point it makes deliveries i was reading [TS]

00:09:19   the wikipedia article afterwards there's [TS]

00:09:20   law stuff I didn't get but they're [TS]

00:09:21   apparently a lot of direct references [TS]

00:09:23   into that into past you know third [TS]

00:09:25   fourth doctor stories in terms of things [TS]

00:09:27   like getting rid of the rooms in the [TS]

00:09:29   target ordering a bite extra thrust [TS]

00:09:30   those are all references [TS]

00:09:32   I mean what I really castro valley yeah [TS]

00:09:35   yeah i like to put the the over i loved [TS]

00:09:37   seeing the old control room [TS]

00:09:39   archives and spending the night the [TS]

00:09:41   Tenth Doctor I that gave me a brief [TS]

00:09:42   paying of like oh they kept that very [TS]

00:09:45   radical it's a standing for for more [TS]

00:09:48   than a year it's at the doctor who [TS]

00:09:49   experience now in life thoughts all you [TS]

00:09:50   want but they can't be blown it up [TS]

00:09:52   no they they blow up little parts [TS]

00:09:55   actually you can see at the doctor who [TS]

00:09:56   organized it is that it's scorched a [TS]

00:09:58   little bit from the pyrotechnics of of [TS]

00:10:00   david tennant's regeneration but they [TS]

00:10:02   left it standing for like a year because [TS]

00:10:04   they knew they were going to use it in [TS]

00:10:05   that episode and got delayed so they [TS]

00:10:06   kept standing until they shot that scene [TS]

00:10:09   in this episode and then they finally [TS]

00:10:11   could take it down but it was a really [TS]

00:10:13   cool you know kind of moment to see Amy [TS]

00:10:15   and Rory run-in ok that's the old [TS]

00:10:17   control room of this place [TS]

00:10:20   yeah it was good so so what did you [TS]

00:10:23   think of saran Jones as interests who [TS]

00:10:26   you know that but the personification of [TS]

00:10:28   the TARDIS I thought she was kind of [TS]

00:10:30   appropriately batty and trying to figure [TS]

00:10:32   out what it like i like i like the touch [TS]

00:10:34   that the idea is the TARDIS is eternal [TS]

00:10:36   it lives everywhere in time and space [TS]

00:10:37   and so doesn't know how to react when it [TS]

00:10:40   suddenly living time linearly because it [TS]

00:10:42   knows everything that's going to happen [TS]

00:10:44   and everything that has happened and is [TS]

00:10:47   trying to just get a grasp on what it's [TS]

00:10:48   like to be one of these people walking [TS]

00:10:50   around [TS]

00:10:50   yeah I thought she did a great job and [TS]

00:10:52   she held her own you know that was and [TS]

00:10:54   that's the important thing right [TS]

00:10:56   the TARDIS as glamazon like the TARDIS [TS]

00:10:58   is the doctors constant companion right [TS]

00:11:00   and in that way [TS]

00:11:02   his is sort of original his partner [TS]

00:11:05   and it needs to be a symbiotic equal [TS]

00:11:08   when given take relationship and so she [TS]

00:11:10   stole her own right exactly which makes [TS]

00:11:13   it earlier [TS]

00:11:14   not only is that funny that you know I [TS]

00:11:15   know I told I stole a Time Lord escaped [TS]

00:11:17   which is the just don't understand this [TS]

00:11:19   entire series mythos but it also puts [TS]

00:11:22   them on equal footing or puts her one up [TS]

00:11:25   on him but that means you know you can't [TS]

00:11:27   take her as being anything less than the [TS]

00:11:29   doctors match [TS]

00:11:30   I love and I guess I don't know there's [TS]

00:11:33   lots of great little dialogue bits but [TS]

00:11:35   my favorite possibly was about the the [TS]

00:11:38   the door [TS]

00:11:39   you never read the instructions on the [TS]

00:11:40   door it says polls it's what do you do [TS]

00:11:42   every time you push this was to open [TS]

00:11:44   outwards yeah that was that was really [TS]

00:11:47   funny although i believe that that is [TS]

00:11:49   about the panel that's got the phone in [TS]

00:11:50   it [TS]

00:11:51   not the whole door but you know it was [TS]

00:11:53   too funny to what I was amusing else [TS]

00:11:56   because i have noted earlier in the [TS]

00:11:57   episode because they showed it a shot oh [TS]

00:11:59   they linger on it right and I was like [TS]

00:12:01   good you're looking at the wrong day i [TS]

00:12:03   was i was thinking the exact same thing [TS]

00:12:04   it's funny they opened the wrong way and [TS]

00:12:06   then they mentioned it was like oh [TS]

00:12:07   that's great yeah I thought she's I [TS]

00:12:10   thought you did a lovely job of having [TS]

00:12:11   um you know we have too many fish out of [TS]

00:12:13   water there's always the you know what [TS]

00:12:14   is this thing you call love you know I [TS]

00:12:16   always kinda hate the android alien [TS]

00:12:19   whatever and she's like no she just had [TS]

00:12:21   a hard time for what now was in verb [TS]

00:12:24   tenses but then she got the hang of it [TS]

00:12:26   and was totally on board and I you know [TS]

00:12:28   and put the whole thing where she's [TS]

00:12:31   she's playing him she knows she has a [TS]

00:12:33   limited time with him [TS]

00:12:34   it really felt like this beautiful [TS]

00:12:35   little how to do between the two of them [TS]

00:12:38   as opposed to being like she wasn't [TS]

00:12:39   important she wasn't serious she wasn't [TS]

00:12:42   larger-than-life but i'm not even that [TS]

00:12:44   great line she had the you know she's [TS]

00:12:46   living things you know you're bigger on [TS]

00:12:48   the inside right that's why they're so i [TS]

00:12:52   think that would have been a good title [TS]

00:12:53   is this i just it isn't just flip it you [TS]

00:12:55   think it's going to be and then you [TS]

00:12:57   realize that does have this extra [TS]

00:12:58   meaning when she says that I thought the [TS]

00:13:00   one the one place where this episode did [TS]

00:13:03   kind of fall down and i think and i [TS]

00:13:06   liked it but I i think this has to do [TS]

00:13:08   with the fact that it's so packed and [TS]

00:13:10   they had to fit in the in the time slot [TS]

00:13:12   and it really was probably more like 60 [TS]

00:13:14   minutes worth like you said like a [TS]

00:13:15   little special is the stuff on the [TS]

00:13:18   dammit before we get into the act in the [TS]

00:13:20   TARDIS and Serrato while with Raymond [TS]

00:13:23   Raymond while the doctor and interests [TS]

00:13:25   are building the kind of replacement [TS]

00:13:26   artists the stuff with with auntie and [TS]

00:13:29   uncle or people that kind of like [TS]

00:13:32   they're there for to advance the plot [TS]

00:13:33   and then they literally are just like [TS]

00:13:35   now this interesting stuff there right [TS]

00:13:37   that they are patchwork and they're [TS]

00:13:38   assembled and there but the thralls of [TS]

00:13:40   of the house and I felt like you wanted [TS]

00:13:43   more of that you wanted to see who they [TS]

00:13:45   were and why they were this way and you [TS]

00:13:47   wanted more of them being kind of [TS]

00:13:48   dominated and threatened by the house so [TS]

00:13:51   that when the house goes into the TARDIS [TS]

00:13:53   it's you know it's scary it's scarier [TS]

00:13:55   and they die and it's more affecting and [TS]

00:13:59   you don't like the food i love the food [TS]

00:14:01   but the unit was really just sort of [TS]

00:14:02   like why not let's make it a nude was [TS]

00:14:05   just there was not another was a hat-tip [TS]

00:14:07   yeah but it wasn't it there was no point [TS]

00:14:09   you're right it didn't matter that it [TS]

00:14:11   was in it I thought like the stakes [TS]

00:14:13   could have been up to a little bit more [TS]

00:14:14   than either let's give him that one line [TS]

00:14:15   about another route I couldn't say it [TS]

00:14:17   right but what are you going to cut [TS]

00:14:18   right i mean that's sort of how I felt [TS]

00:14:19   is that this is obviously the stuff that [TS]

00:14:21   they would you would need to cut because [TS]

00:14:22   you can't cut all this other stuff but [TS]

00:14:24   it did suffer i think because we didn't [TS]

00:14:26   get enough of that time with those [TS]

00:14:29   characters are the first scene is really [TS]

00:14:31   quite remarkable especially in a show [TS]

00:14:34   that is for children because the first [TS]

00:14:37   scene is essentially these two people [TS]

00:14:39   leading a third person and who says I [TS]

00:14:42   guess it so it's me and they're like [TS]

00:14:43   yeah it's gonna be you and what here's [TS]

00:14:45   what we're going to do we're going to [TS]

00:14:46   kill you and stick somebody else inside [TS]

00:14:48   your body and she's like I'm scared well [TS]

00:14:50   I would be it's gonna hurt like hell and [TS]

00:14:51   then bang she's dead [TS]

00:14:53   I mean wow what it is trigger dark dark [TS]

00:14:57   yellow is the implied that I don't know [TS]

00:14:59   why she's a name and the other three [TS]

00:15:00   have character attributes but it seems [TS]

00:15:04   to be implied that they've done this so [TS]

00:15:05   many times before that you know maybe [TS]

00:15:08   there's not much of a person in there I [TS]

00:15:10   don't know that may be the limiting [TS]

00:15:11   factor later I don't know I was little I [TS]

00:15:14   was a little sad that the I mean I don't [TS]

00:15:16   know if you want call red herring around [TS]

00:15:18   i get and it made sense at the time lord [TS]

00:15:19   angle with the mail and every getting [TS]

00:15:22   him getting mail and everything I [TS]

00:15:24   although it was entirely i mean i guess [TS]

00:15:26   the house sent that last message to try [TS]

00:15:28   and entice them they're right but yeah I [TS]

00:15:31   mean it was cool [TS]

00:15:32   it as someone who has not watched a lot [TS]

00:15:34   of the prior like the non modern doctor [TS]

00:15:36   who you always feel like you you lack a [TS]

00:15:39   little bit not having seen all the you [TS]

00:15:42   know the other time lords in except for [TS]

00:15:45   you know the master master yeah and a [TS]

00:15:47   little bit of you have more cancel it [TS]

00:15:48   was cool to have his attention like I [TS]

00:15:51   don't like it was cool to hear about [TS]

00:15:52   like he's like all the Corsair that was [TS]

00:15:54   great that was like oh wow that sounds [TS]

00:15:55   cool like what i wanna i wanna know more [TS]

00:15:58   about that guy [TS]

00:15:59   ya he's dead yeah but they always got it [TS]

00:16:03   he's gonna get to see the arm the [TS]

00:16:04   Corsair the math you don't get to see [TS]

00:16:06   his arms and guests are the arm of the [TS]

00:16:08   questionnaire or said no that was good [TS]

00:16:10   actually that is a apparently I i saw [TS]

00:16:14   this episode once and I can't have no [TS]

00:16:16   recollection of it all but Patrick [TS]

00:16:18   travels last episode 1969 the war games [TS]

00:16:20   there's a scene where the doctor i [TS]

00:16:23   believe puts a message he has to some of [TS]

00:16:26   the time lords and he puts a message in [TS]

00:16:27   a cube and sends it off and neil gaiman [TS]

00:16:29   said oh I want to do I want to use that [TS]

00:16:31   that we haven't seen that since 1969 [TS]

00:16:33   always thought that was cool [TS]

00:16:35   so that's what those cubes are is [TS]

00:16:37   actually a reference to Doctor Who from [TS]

00:16:39   you know 40-plus years ago which is [TS]

00:16:42   nobody was a giant doctor he's a huge [TS]

00:16:44   Doctor Who yeah I can believe it also [TS]

00:16:46   there's the developed telepathic thing [TS]

00:16:48   which they use at times seems like it [TS]

00:16:50   was used quite a bit this time I thought [TS]

00:16:53   the way I just love the fact that it's [TS]

00:16:54   like what's going on it's like getting [TS]

00:16:56   some kind of message it's painful like I [TS]

00:16:58   either this or this beauty of in the [TS]

00:17:01   previous seasons when you actually [TS]

00:17:02   including this one when they had to use [TS]

00:17:03   a time when they call it say a look at [TS]

00:17:07   artists on the wrist thing it's a [TS]

00:17:09   teleportation the time vortex or you're [TS]

00:17:11   at a time or text me later or give or [TS]

00:17:14   take particular image and holes to use [TS]

00:17:15   it really it doesn't feel good to use [TS]

00:17:18   and love the fact that like there's [TS]

00:17:19   these things like it's hack together [TS]

00:17:21   technology or or it's painful to receive [TS]

00:17:24   the telepathic message from the TARDIS [TS]

00:17:25   not just like oh its ethereal wonderful [TS]

00:17:28   states like now okay [TS]

00:17:30   crimson 11 delight in the great words [TS]

00:17:34   that i can remember it must be a real [TS]

00:17:35   word because your game and used it and [TS]

00:17:37   it perhaps not [TS]

00:17:38   caracal parents file yeah I don't know [TS]

00:17:40   it wasn't [TS]

00:17:42   you know running around in quarters it's [TS]

00:17:44   doctor who write it was a little bit [TS]

00:17:45   silly but at the same time I like they [TS]

00:17:47   were in the TARDIS in there and and it's [TS]

00:17:49   you get the invoice very retro wouldn't [TS]

00:17:51   normally be you know quite that way but [TS]

00:17:54   because the house is running things he's [TS]

00:17:56   basically just making them run around [TS]

00:17:57   and entertain him but it was cool to see [TS]

00:18:00   them to told me this opportunity to say [TS]

00:18:03   menacingly Michael she missed [TS]

00:18:04   opportunity minutes with a and the house [TS]

00:18:06   always wins you know haha because it [TS]

00:18:10   always bet on black and yeah [TS]

00:18:12   Wesley Snipes with whatever lies gone [TS]

00:18:15   bad [TS]

00:18:17   Scott great ways did I like it yes i did [TS]

00:18:20   i did have one problem with it will have [TS]

00:18:22   two problems with that both of which are [TS]

00:18:24   not important but I'll bring them up [TS]

00:18:27   because that's the kind of person I am I [TS]

00:18:28   so you know the doctor gets this message [TS]

00:18:31   in there like who we have to go outside [TS]

00:18:33   the universe at the doctors like I've [TS]

00:18:34   been outside the university everyone's [TS]

00:18:35   like oh how do we get 30 days ago it's [TS]

00:18:37   really hard at two seconds later that's [TS]

00:18:38   how do you reverse not so hard and the [TS]

00:18:41   other thing is that they bade this big [TS]

00:18:44   deal about the doctors like well I can [TS]

00:18:45   finally talk to the TARDIS and yet the [TS]

00:18:48   TARDIS can send telepathic messages to [TS]

00:18:50   Rory and how hard is it the computer in [TS]

00:18:53   Star Trek can talk [TS]

00:18:54   how hard is it to hook up something in [TS]

00:18:56   the TARDIS they can let the time I think [TS]

00:18:57   there was dialogue about the actual [TS]

00:18:58   being well yeah I mean they see I think [TS]

00:19:02   Amy said said you know you [TS]

00:19:05   why don't why doesn't the terms to talk [TS]

00:19:06   to you and there was an answer and it [TS]

00:19:08   was something like that all it did you [TS]

00:19:09   know it is its eternal and it just [TS]

00:19:12   doesn't work that way and it wouldn't [TS]

00:19:14   understand it doesn't mean it was it was [TS]

00:19:16   explaining it away but I appreciate that [TS]

00:19:18   they that they did it yesterday anything [TS]

00:19:21   then he tries to explain it and then [TS]

00:19:22   made clear get it says its basic ways [TS]

00:19:24   yeah I actually one of the things I [TS]

00:19:26   really like about the University of [TS]

00:19:27   having read as i mentioned on a recent [TS]

00:19:29   podcast i read these books you know why [TS]

00:19:31   Brian Greene about parallel universes [TS]

00:19:34   and about string theory and he tries [TS]

00:19:38   very hard to explain these incredibly [TS]

00:19:39   crazy complex in 11 dimensional [TS]

00:19:42   universes and curled-up dimensions by [TS]

00:19:45   using metaphors and and you get you to [TS]

00:19:48   get the distinct sense that that the [TS]

00:19:50   metaphor is not really right but it's [TS]

00:19:52   the clothes closest we can get for my [TS]

00:19:54   puny brain to comprehend [TS]

00:19:55   and so I love that in we've seen it [TS]

00:19:58   twice the cs and I think we're the [TS]

00:19:59   doctors not like that at all [TS]

00:20:00   he says if it helps then great but it's [TS]

00:20:02   really actually not like that wasn't [TS]

00:20:04   there is an XKCD strip like last week [TS]

00:20:06   that had the same joke about cavities [TS]

00:20:09   like a you know like a rubber sheet we [TS]

00:20:10   putting in what's pulling things down if [TS]

00:20:12   there's no gravity it's not like that at [TS]

00:20:13   all but here would understand otherwise [TS]

00:20:15   use your dimensional representation of a [TS]

00:20:18   three-dimensional universe just if you [TS]

00:20:19   know just go with it [TS]

00:20:21   I didn't think this was the most quantum [TS]

00:20:23   leap like episode in terms of [TS]

00:20:25   explanation where the TARDIS is like you [TS]

00:20:27   know she's like you never take me where [TS]

00:20:29   you don't take me we're trying to go and [TS]

00:20:30   take you where you need to be yes and [TS]

00:20:33   then I was like I was like you know we [TS]

00:20:36   can always stopping and never be able to [TS]

00:20:38   get home trying to make that last leap [TS]

00:20:40   home and I just had that sense of I [TS]

00:20:42   thought actually the modern series have [TS]

00:20:44   been a lot more like that where the [TS]

00:20:46   doctor sets out to go somewhere winds up [TS]

00:20:49   somewhere else or just find some other [TS]

00:20:50   animal serious was like that to mean [TS]

00:20:52   that was why that was such a beautiful [TS]

00:20:54   line is that it's always been the case [TS]

00:20:55   that that the doctor ends up right i [TS]

00:20:58   mean that's the premise of the show is [TS]

00:20:59   that hehe how does he go to be in all of [TS]

00:21:01   these places and and everything goes a [TS]

00:21:03   little wonky knee goes unexpected places [TS]

00:21:05   and the answer is that the TARDIS is [TS]

00:21:07   taking you out [TS]

00:21:08   I always felt that was the case right [TS]

00:21:09   that that if he goes where he's needed [TS]

00:21:11   and that's why he goes there but so [TS]

00:21:14   having her say no I take you where you [TS]

00:21:16   need to be it's just all those the [TS]

00:21:17   argument that because everything is [TS]

00:21:19   interconnected in tiny widely [TS]

00:21:21   wibbly-wobbly that that there could be [TS]

00:21:24   the notion that artist takes to where he [TS]

00:21:26   was because that's where already was [TS]

00:21:28   because he had to be there at that [TS]

00:21:29   particular time that he wasn't the [TS]

00:21:31   universe we've been destroyed or I want [TS]

00:21:33   you to explain that and by some i had [TS]

00:21:34   medical 11 or was it meant oh very well [TS]

00:21:39   I can't walking on your destinations [TS]

00:21:41   there are plenty of episodes in which he [TS]

00:21:43   actually goes somewhere and it happens [TS]

00:21:45   that when he's there something terrible [TS]

00:21:46   happens or he's the cause of it such as [TS]

00:21:48   midnight in the right tenant years right [TS]

00:21:52   but I'm you want me right it's like time [TS]

00:21:54   are there so that would so that he would [TS]

00:21:55   be able to do that i don't i'll also say [TS]

00:21:58   this to this remind anyone of the star [TS]

00:21:59   trek episode with the souring the milk [TS]

00:22:01   episode the no no well child every tiny [TS]

00:22:06   galaxy's child every time you touch me [TS]

00:22:08   your time you touch the ship you're [TS]

00:22:10   touching me because Leah Brahms is the [TS]

00:22:12   holodeck of the which is actually the [TS]

00:22:14   enterprise computer while it was ya [TS]

00:22:16   later my only other episode the man i [TS]

00:22:18   really enjoyed that you know like what's [TS]

00:22:21   my name and so he's going there sexy to [TS]

00:22:24   you sweet i was I mean it's funny lot of [TS]

00:22:29   fun lots of funny stuff right i mean III [TS]

00:22:31   you know it's it could have been it [TS]

00:22:34   could've been dark I was actually [TS]

00:22:35   worried it would be scarier and it [TS]

00:22:36   wasn't a scary episode really my kids [TS]

00:22:39   weren't scared I mean it was it was [TS]

00:22:41   important that's atomized the your [TS]

00:22:44   breathing would yeah well where was he [TS]

00:22:47   he was standing over there oh well [TS]

00:22:51   or actually that that's a funny line or [TS]

00:22:53   distribute stay and stay out of the way [TS]

00:22:55   how we know where you're landing or I [TS]

00:22:57   don't know it's okay so no I mean lots [TS]

00:23:02   of funny stuff and obviously written by [TS]

00:23:04   somebody who loves the show and it was a [TS]

00:23:06   good episode I feel like like Dan [TS]

00:23:08   actually like on one level it's hard to [TS]

00:23:11   judge it having only seen at one time [TS]

00:23:13   because because the hype [TS]

00:23:14   it's very hard for me to calibrate sort [TS]

00:23:16   of where it really ranks because there [TS]

00:23:19   was so much hype going in and and [TS]

00:23:21   honestly watching it with my kids I [TS]

00:23:23   actually had a little bit of a sinking [TS]

00:23:24   feeling when i started to watch it [TS]

00:23:26   because I thought man you know how can [TS]

00:23:28   it live up to all of the hype here I [TS]

00:23:30   feel like I need to just kinda let it [TS]

00:23:32   wash over me and and not not get too [TS]

00:23:35   excited about it so I really don't know [TS]

00:23:36   how to ultimately judging other than to [TS]

00:23:38   say that I did like it i thought it was [TS]

00:23:40   well written it did feel a rush but so [TS]

00:23:42   many of the Moffett episodes especially [TS]

00:23:44   these last couple years have felt rushed [TS]

00:23:47   to felt totally insanely packed over [TS]

00:23:50   packed with stuff and yeah I wish this [TS]

00:23:53   was an hour-long episode because i think [TS]

00:23:54   that they could have used it but i do [TS]

00:23:56   think it was beautifully written in many [TS]

00:23:59   parts and and was well done i'm not sure [TS]

00:24:01   measures up to some of the best episodes [TS]

00:24:03   of the new rebooted doctor who though [TS]

00:24:04   including a bunch by steven moffat a few [TS]

00:24:06   by russell davis to it was never any [TS]

00:24:08   real sense of actual threat i mean i [TS]

00:24:10   think that's it is like the house was [TS]

00:24:12   ominous and it was evil and so forth but [TS]

00:24:16   you never felt there was any doctor [TS]

00:24:18   wasn't about to learn new truths about [TS]

00:24:19   himself percent [TS]

00:24:21   but he wasn't going to know one's got [TS]

00:24:23   everything yeah well nor were they nor [TS]

00:24:25   were they put in I mean except for [TS]

00:24:26   really want me an imaginary Rory torment [TS]

00:24:29   right but it was not like amy was Amy [TS]

00:24:31   and Rory and I believe we call it war [TS]

00:24:33   meant i'm going to go very quickly that [TS]

00:24:37   we don't we don't know about you now [TS]

00:24:39   sorry no the contract oh you call it [TS]

00:24:42   that no but you know it wasn't as if [TS]

00:24:44   they were they were tortured or [TS]

00:24:45   something like that they were sort of [TS]

00:24:47   scared a little bit and they have to run [TS]

00:24:48   around but that wasn't really the point [TS]

00:24:50   again it was perfect it was more of a [TS]

00:24:52   cardiovascular workout i like the idea [TS]

00:24:54   though [TS]

00:24:54   what's scary is the idea that some you [TS]

00:24:56   know another malevolent consciousness is [TS]

00:24:58   taken over the TARDIS and it's going to [TS]

00:24:59   fly around I mean that was that was [TS]

00:25:01   scary in the sense that you know it's [TS]

00:25:04   we've come to know and love the TARDIS [TS]

00:25:05   and now there's this bad guy inside her [TS]

00:25:08   that's nice but he's going to the [TS]

00:25:10   universe but there are no other time [TS]

00:25:11   lord so the house is going to die [TS]

00:25:13   well I think the doctors you'll figure [TS]

00:25:15   something we'll find something else to [TS]

00:25:17   eat you know he'll need a black hole [TS]

00:25:18   like something i don't know what the [TS]

00:25:20   next am I said that are suffering but he [TS]

00:25:23   will go to hand planet [TS]

00:25:25   yeah and where that that is pure roar [TS]

00:25:30   meant sorry also good i am your dad it's [TS]

00:25:36   not forget it don't matter it's got on [TS]

00:25:38   you got rolled mental and I hope now I [TS]

00:25:42   you know it's over time moving on this [TS]

00:25:45   podcast was really can't enter this [TS]

00:25:47   podcast so I rod is not add up [TS]

00:25:50   oh and we were left with a brief tidbit [TS]

00:25:54   relating presumably to the to the [TS]

00:25:57   overarching plot of the season in that [TS]

00:26:00   the TARDIS told Rory something before [TS]

00:26:03   she became the targets again about the [TS]

00:26:06   river in a forest I remember but [TS]

00:26:08   sometimes important i guess i would [TS]

00:26:10   appreciate away at it wasn't like the [TS]

00:26:12   only way out of the forest the only [TS]

00:26:14   water in the forest is the river the [TS]

00:26:16   river right out what it is concerning [TS]

00:26:19   tonight you know what that Holly you [TS]

00:26:20   don't know anybody know rivering be [TS]

00:26:22   ridiculous [TS]

00:26:23   the i'm waiting for the scene where mrs. [TS]

00:26:26   worry I'm still worried about is what [TS]

00:26:28   shut the hell up about the doctor time [TS]

00:26:30   we all know we got other things to deal [TS]

00:26:32   with you're going to [TS]

00:26:33   start every episode with her during the [TS]

00:26:34   Aurora's going to say you're still [TS]

00:26:36   thinking about it aren't you [TS]

00:26:37   well least they didn't end this episode [TS]

00:26:38   with the doctor flipping a switch and [TS]

00:26:40   check on her [TS]

00:26:41   alright so i was waiting for that to see [TS]

00:26:43   that is wreaking he's making quantum up [TS]

00:26:46   quantum bunk belts it's gonna it's all [TS]

00:26:48   and jump difficulty between one and two [TS]

00:26:49   bunk beds they're just gonna you're just [TS]

00:26:51   gonna go to the the next step which is [TS]

00:26:53   going to be flipping and going [TS]

00:26:54   boy-girl-boy-boy-girl-boy-girl i did [TS]

00:26:58   like the line about the bunk beds [TS]

00:26:59   it's cool to bed with the ladder how do [TS]

00:27:01   you put in that your room on kids are [TS]

00:27:04   awesome [TS]

00:27:05   my children will soon discover that [TS]

00:27:07   lucky if i give them a ladder [TS]

00:27:11   oh no so it so any other thoughts about [TS]

00:27:15   about the the what-is-it the doctor's [TS]

00:27:17   wife was fun and amusing which is kind [TS]

00:27:20   of nice [TS]

00:27:22   yeah it was i liked it to be I mean my [TS]

00:27:23   complaint about the pirate episode is [TS]

00:27:25   that they felt like they didn't have [TS]

00:27:26   enough material and I'd rather I'd [TS]

00:27:28   rather have overflowing with material [TS]

00:27:31   more material than you can do anything [TS]

00:27:32   with then than the other so you know it [TS]

00:27:35   as a standalone it was much work much [TS]

00:27:38   better [TS]

00:27:39   that's the only problem with the pirate [TS]

00:27:41   episode was that it was horrible [TS]

00:27:42   haha so 11 one little flaw fatal flaw [TS]

00:27:46   they could have just fixed it i mean if [TS]

00:27:48   they just tweaked it a little bit it [TS]

00:27:50   would have been horrible [TS]

00:27:51   yeah well let's not talk about that [TS]

00:27:52   people are angry at us for being so down [TS]

00:27:55   on that episode so it's all like [TS]

00:27:58   everything from now on I honest so I oh [TS]

00:28:02   I watched it on I rented it from itunes [TS]

00:28:05   so i want to i wonder if anyone else had [TS]

00:28:06   this problem where they were on the [TS]

00:28:07   makeshift TARDIS and I couldn't hear [TS]

00:28:10   anything that they were saying to each [TS]

00:28:12   other just my ok 10 years it was tough [TS]

00:28:16   because the general problems [TS]

00:28:18   yeah I think they just there's a bad mix [TS]

00:28:19   on the shade the problem is that i think [TS]

00:28:21   maybe part of it is because all of us [TS]

00:28:23   are Americans it's it's sometimes hard [TS]

00:28:25   to figure out what they're saying that's [TS]

00:28:27   uncle own rules a bit uncle was Welsh i [TS]

00:28:29   think i'm using a weird accent I think [TS]

00:28:33   was fascinating actually I think it's if [TS]

00:28:35   I discovered if I can't figure out in [TS]

00:28:37   the UK accent is its well we'll just [TS]

00:28:40   call it Welsh he said it just like [TS]

00:28:42   Catherine zeta-jones so have you ever [TS]

00:28:44   heard about Cheryl strangely [TS]

00:28:46   first-order have you ever heard her talk [TS]

00:28:48   when she wasn't character she talks yuge [TS]

00:28:51   it does not correspond it is making the [TS]

00:28:53   show they make the show in Wales so [TS]

00:28:55   that's not that's not surprising they [TS]

00:28:57   actually make a show in Catherine [TS]

00:28:58   zeta-jones oh she's making around the [TS]

00:29:01   inside optic oh my ok so next week we [TS]

00:29:05   have a two-parter by Matthew Graham who [TS]

00:29:10   was a writer for life on Mars and its [TS]

00:29:14   successor ashes to ashes [TS]

00:29:16   he also wrote david tennant episode that [TS]

00:29:19   was a low budget last minute fill-in [TS]

00:29:20   episode i believe called fear her which [TS]

00:29:23   was terrible i couldn't even watch them [TS]

00:29:25   when i started watching so bad I've [TS]

00:29:27   never is the only Doctor Who and the [TS]

00:29:28   miles you don't have watched that was [TS]

00:29:30   one of the kids drawing thing yeah we [TS]

00:29:32   will struggle but they didn't have the [TS]

00:29:33   money to like do the I think originally [TS]

00:29:35   they were gonna be like animated parts [TS]

00:29:37   where the doctor was in a kids drawing [TS]

00:29:38   and then they didn't have the money for [TS]

00:29:40   head so they just had like a shadow on a [TS]

00:29:42   wall and a picture of this carriage I [TS]

00:29:44   there's a bit more uses the one is [TS]

00:29:46   always uses a sonic screwdriver to knock [TS]

00:29:48   a piece of drawing out of the air it was [TS]

00:29:51   just lie here s if he does the Olympic [TS]

00:29:53   torch in the london 2012 olympics in [TS]

00:29:55   that episode that episode but you know [TS]

00:29:57   but life on Mars was good so I you know [TS]

00:29:59   did I like ashes ashes as a guy i watch [TS]

00:30:02   the entire series those good performance [TS]

00:30:04   in the first couple of that but so so [TS]

00:30:05   he's got you know he's he's got a [TS]

00:30:07   special i think i think it's worth not [TS]

00:30:09   blaming him for fear her [TS]

00:30:11   everybody's got a bad episode and I'm [TS]

00:30:12   but a two-part episode i am looking [TS]

00:30:16   forward to it actually I think I think [TS]

00:30:18   it sounds from what I've heard is creepy [TS]

00:30:20   it's kind of dark and creepy and it said [TS]

00:30:22   I think in the near future and so it's [TS]

00:30:25   yeah it's i'm looking forward to it so I [TS]

00:30:28   guess we'll be back in two weeks then to [TS]

00:30:30   talk about the the two-parter as a whole [TS]

00:30:32   rather talk about how worried eyes maybe [TS]

00:30:35   I'll twice twice actually but I believe [TS]

00:30:38   this episode is is about it i don't [TS]

00:30:40   think this is a spoiler it's it's called [TS]

00:30:42   it called it the red flash I think right [TS]

00:30:45   i think that i think there's like the [TS]

00:30:47   idea here is that there's like cloning [TS]

00:30:48   involved so if we're very very lucky [TS]

00:30:50   the clone war ii and killing them twice [TS]

00:30:52   or like seven or eight times because why [TS]

00:30:55   not why not [TS]

00:30:56   it's like I mean buying in bulk yeah [TS]

00:30:58   guess I got extra six [TS]

00:31:00   back of robberies at costco I was just [TS]

00:31:02   at costco or you picked up a 12 pack of [TS]

00:31:04   Rory's you get a palette and I'm still [TS]

00:31:06   open [TS]

00:31:07   i'm still holding out for the return of [TS]

00:31:08   bird Cribbins though I know now it's a [TS]

00:31:11   party that's impossible universally [TS]

00:31:12   episode when I just I want him back i [TS]

00:31:14   miss them i will be returning [TS]

00:31:16   that's right said fred on that note i am [TS]

00:31:21   going to wrap it up for this flash [TS]

00:31:24   incomparable episode we'll have a [TS]

00:31:25   regular episode in the next day or so [TS]

00:31:27   but thank you for listening to our [TS]

00:31:29   doctor who recaps will be back in two [TS]

00:31:31   weeks and thank you for recapping and [TS]
