00:01:53   that's right I you relieve the remainder [TS]

00:01:57   Riker in some way remember checks [TS]

00:02:12   very hard to complain to a more and more [TS]

00:02:14   person whose name rhymes with sex about [TS]

00:02:16   the just people can make a better name [TS]

00:02:17   that's right mr. all I know as a smell I [TS]

00:02:20   don't know what you're talking about [TS]

00:02:21   I would have loved to be compared to you [TS]

00:02:24   know I think what is commander Riker if [TS]

00:02:26   I think mine has the the best can't make [TS]

00:02:28   fun of me I you would think you're ready [TS]

00:02:31   now sadly the jaw sweet movie came a [TS]

00:02:34   little too late for ya but even then you [TS]

00:02:36   know it wouldn't be that bad to be it [TS]

00:02:38   was that there was Ren and Stimpy there [TS]

00:02:40   was serenity the gods prayer there was [TS]

00:02:42   sure you want your son you also have I'm [TS]

00:02:45   directly when you do a name that that is [TS]

00:02:48   a word in the dictionary that's tough [TS]

00:02:51   yeah and I don't it's not mocking it's [TS]

00:02:53   not more rather it's not putting [TS]

00:02:55   unworthy but there how many times did [TS]

00:02:57   you get pissed off at somebody and they [TS]

00:02:59   said well that's not very much like your [TS]

00:03:01   name serenity [TS]

00:03:02   mmm i had a count and then I feel the [TS]

00:03:04   book right and then I feel another [TS]

00:03:06   brother all I stopped counting yeah you [TS]

00:03:08   killed them all well I went back in time [TS]

00:03:09   and you know kill the Grand Valley [TS]

00:03:11   waited segue that that sounds like a [TS]

00:03:14   topic so what's our topic is not [TS]

00:03:15   people's names Dan freaks [TS]

00:03:17   it's time travel in the movies and [TS]

00:03:20   specifically we're going to say that you [TS]

00:03:22   did because you came back in time and [TS]

00:03:24   specifically we're going to talk about [TS]

00:03:26   back to the future and oh what the heck [TS]

00:03:29   we can talk about this equals to if you [TS]

00:03:30   really like to but that's the future the [TS]

00:03:32   lovely 1985 i believe yes a [TS]

00:03:37   science-fiction comedy starring michael [TS]

00:03:39   j fox the J stands for genius and [TS]

00:03:43   christopher lloyd and weekly at thompson [TS]

00:03:46   and Crispin Glover country life and [TS]

00:03:49   color white [TS]

00:03:50   uh-oh miss Wilson and if yes I'm and [TS]

00:03:53   Biff TVs Biff movies Biff so so we'll [TS]

00:03:57   start we'll start with back to the [TS]

00:03:58   future i think one of the things I [TS]

00:04:00   remember about back to the future is [TS]

00:04:01   that I remember being very clear [TS]

00:04:03   reaction to a trend in the movies which [TS]

00:04:05   is the year before 1984 Ghostbusters [TS]

00:04:09   became the biggest grossing movie of all [TS]

00:04:11   time or a comedy movie of all time and [TS]

00:04:14   it was this interesting combination it [TS]

00:04:17   was a comedy with sci-fi elements and [TS]

00:04:20   big special effects released over the [TS]

00:04:21   summer huge hit and the next summer and [TS]

00:04:25   I don't think it was at the time [TS]

00:04:27   intended to be this but really [TS]

00:04:29   replicated it with this other comedy [TS]

00:04:31   sci-fi adventure [TS]

00:04:33   back to the future and so I remember [TS]

00:04:35   going into it thinking well you know [TS]

00:04:37   this is just this attempt to do [TS]

00:04:38   Ghostbusters but it was a very different [TS]

00:04:39   movie and I i think you know i think it [TS]

00:04:43   works on all those levels have been one [TS]

00:04:45   of the great things about back to the [TS]

00:04:46   future is that it is funny and it's got [TS]

00:04:49   a nostalgia element but it's got the [TS]

00:04:51   sci-fi adventure element to it all kind [TS]

00:04:53   of works and what to me what's amazing [TS]

00:04:54   about back to the future is that it it [TS]

00:04:56   stays for the most part very loyal to [TS]

00:04:58   its own definition of how time travel [TS]

00:05:00   should work and I think for more than [TS]

00:05:03   one generation of people now as defined [TS]

00:05:05   what the general rules of time-travel [TS]

00:05:07   should be if you're going to do any [TS]

00:05:09   other kind of fiction today about time [TS]

00:05:11   travel [TS]

00:05:11   you have to just buy do you know the [TS]

00:05:13   generic rules you can accept the way the [TS]

00:05:15   time that back to the future has [TS]

00:05:16   established or you have two very [TS]

00:05:18   explicitly define your rule set to say [TS]

00:05:19   I'm not following back to the future [TS]

00:05:21   battles i think the moment a couple [TS]

00:05:22   years ago a doctor who where where the [TS]

00:05:24   doctor who has been time traveling since [TS]

00:05:26   the sixties mind you tried to explain to [TS]

00:05:28   a human being what about some rule of [TS]

00:05:30   time travel or like all right back to [TS]

00:05:33   the future and you see that ok [TS]

00:05:35   Wow we've gotten to the point where back [TS]

00:05:37   to the future is the reference point in [TS]

00:05:38   Doctor Who for time travel because you [TS]

00:05:41   have the whole like the pictures [TS]

00:05:43   disappearing as a at you know it's [TS]

00:05:45   actually a really nice non [TS]

00:05:47   science-fictional way of viewing like [TS]

00:05:48   changes to the timeline which is it's [TS]

00:05:50   not like oh you can't remember anything [TS]

00:05:52   anymore it's like 10 these pictures are [TS]

00:05:53   fading and if you don't fix things I'll [TS]

00:05:55   it away [TS]

00:05:56   you have just now instantly highlighted [TS]

00:05:58   my biggest my single biggest objection [TS]

00:05:59   to how the movie handles time-travel [TS]

00:06:01   fading away of the pictures it should be [TS]

00:06:03   instantaneous right it should be [TS]

00:06:04   instantaneous there should be no fading [TS]

00:06:05   it's not like they suddenly parts [TS]

00:06:07   ratchets consider what it's really like [TS]

00:06:10   you a lot of changing in that there's a [TS]

00:06:13   there's still a possibility [TS]

00:06:15   yeah we're still at that you know there [TS]

00:06:17   have gone they're still not your reason [TS]

00:06:18   they're not there [TS]

00:06:20   you know i think that i think the [TS]

00:06:21   quantum physics people would argue with [TS]

00:06:23   that then maybe they were standing maybe [TS]

00:06:25   they were their own podcast there's no [TS]

00:06:27   way for us to know it's very uncertain [TS]

00:06:29   that's right well they used to but we [TS]

00:06:30   change that so now it's not like that [TS]

00:06:32   anymore [TS]

00:06:33   we traveled back in time [TS]

00:06:37   study chemistry okay so we just start [TS]

00:06:39   this podcast over again like no times no [TS]

00:06:41   so Huey Huey Lewis by the way this is [TS]

00:06:44   like the app apotheosis of Kiwi lewis [TS]

00:06:46   and the news the the power love the [TS]

00:06:49   power of love and back in time [TS]

00:06:51   what's interesting about you might have [TS]

00:06:53   the soundtrack by the way actually [TS]

00:06:54   bought this money is set i bought the [TS]

00:06:56   back to the future but he lose his [TS]

00:06:57   contribution to the soundtrack was the [TS]

00:06:58   year before with Ghostbusters he had [TS]

00:07:00   been asked to do this the theme song [TS]

00:07:02   happen he declined saying he didn't want [TS]

00:07:04   to be pigeonholed as you know or do you [TS]

00:07:06   know to get into that genre but then he [TS]

00:07:07   saw how big the Ghostbusters team hit [TS]

00:07:09   was then later sued the Ghostbusters if [TS]

00:07:12   we're getting off the day with a new [TS]

00:07:13   drop the bassline of free Parker juniors [TS]

00:07:15   Ghostbusters is the baseline for my [TS]

00:07:17   one-man war on drugs when so and he got [TS]

00:07:19   a part in the movie yeah [TS]

00:07:21   yes nothing and two and two songs the [TS]

00:07:25   the key opening song and the end-credit [TS]

00:07:28   song right [TS]

00:07:29   yeah that's the power of you Lewis [TS]

00:07:31   that's that is the power of fuels are [TS]

00:07:32   you're listening to the Huey Lewis stars [TS]

00:07:34   podcast by the way I know but that I had [TS]

00:07:38   that I had the cassette there's a [TS]

00:07:39   lindsey buckingham song on there that i [TS]

00:07:41   kinda like old time bomb town was about [TS]

00:07:43   the ladies here tonight but I don't know [TS]

00:07:44   if we have time to get over it is not [TS]

00:07:46   know he's bumped will be on the next and [TS]

00:07:48   comfortable with your number 40 what's [TS]

00:07:50   interesting about this movie isn't [TS]

00:07:51   nostalgia point which we which we raised [TS]

00:07:53   earlier is that there's there's various [TS]

00:07:54   nostalgia points depending on where you [TS]

00:07:56   are right because obviously you've got [TS]

00:07:58   from now we now have the the 80s [TS]

00:08:00   nostalgia view of it but at the time of [TS]

00:08:02   course there was a nostalgia of the [TS]

00:08:04   fifties because he goes back in time to [TS]

00:08:06   the fifth is this movie not far enough [TS]

00:08:07   back in our past now that it's the [TS]

00:08:09   equivalent of a farm and fifties was [TS]

00:08:11   always very marty mcfly almost well yeah [TS]

00:08:14   in fact maybe 30 years its 30-year yeah [TS]

00:08:17   but it's how ya gonna add to the most [TS]

00:08:20   were actually alive then [TS]

00:08:21   Great Scott what we're very close to [TS]

00:08:23   most of us though yeah yeah that's true [TS]

00:08:26   not most of it oh right that's [TS]

00:08:28   depressing us when I went during the [TS]

00:08:30   nineteen fifties most of us know i was [TS]

00:08:32   talking about i would venture to say [TS]

00:08:36   that all of not words of the eighty [TS]

00:08:39   percent of us for not know but so you [TS]

00:08:41   you get that you get that fifties [TS]

00:08:43   nostalgia I mean that's actually one of [TS]

00:08:44   the interesting point is that not only [TS]

00:08:46   do we have 80s nostalgia now but it [TS]

00:08:48   played off of that fifties nostalgia it [TS]

00:08:50   was very [TS]

00:08:50   too much there and and so the fifties [TS]

00:08:52   that they portray you know you've got [TS]

00:08:53   your you got your greasers right i mean [TS]

00:08:56   it's a little bit like like a American [TS]

00:08:59   Graffiti kind of thing almost got these [TS]

00:09:01   archetypes you got the cars with the [TS]

00:09:02   fins and you get the diner and and they [TS]

00:09:05   walk through all those scenes and you've [TS]

00:09:07   got the like high school fifties kind of [TS]

00:09:09   high school tropes which leads to the [TS]

00:09:11   dance and and yet one of the things I [TS]

00:09:13   really like about this movie is that it [TS]

00:09:15   is subversive to a certain degree and [TS]

00:09:17   and I think the moment that strikes me [TS]

00:09:19   about it is that he meets his mom and [TS]

00:09:22   and it's it's some of this some of her [TS]

00:09:24   behavior think she's sneaking a smoke at [TS]

00:09:26   one point I was like oh my god mom and [TS]

00:09:29   it and so it's like the 50 seems so [TS]

00:09:31   whitewashed and yet then you go back [TS]

00:09:33   there and you know it totally wasn't [TS]

00:09:34   like what we view the fifties to be and [TS]

00:09:37   and even though it was enjoying the [TS]

00:09:39   nostalgia factor it also was kind of [TS]

00:09:41   commenting on the fact that it wasn't [TS]

00:09:42   really is clean and squeaky you know [TS]

00:09:44   squeaky clean and beautiful as as we [TS]

00:09:46   think that if you talk if you're [TS]

00:09:47   highlighting his mom smoking as the the [TS]

00:09:49   kids enterprise the fifties I think [TS]

00:09:51   you're dancing around what what nearly [TS]

00:09:53   got the movie not made but nobody wanted [TS]

00:09:55   to touch the movie with the original [TS]

00:09:56   Zemeckis and Gail script because there [TS]

00:09:58   was a key incest supply its as long as [TS]

00:10:01   nobody wanted to touch it they wanted [TS]

00:10:03   them to get rid of that and work around [TS]

00:10:04   incest and not do with that we were [TS]

00:10:06   marty mcfly where real Marty's mom falls [TS]

00:10:09   in love with him hours time writer i [TS]

00:10:10   think the movie about the guy on the [TS]

00:10:11   motorcycle that goes back in time and [TS]

00:10:13   and it becomes his own grandfather [TS]

00:10:14   that's a totally different movie but [TS]

00:10:16   when i saw when i was 13 there are very [TS]

00:10:18   few films that I can cite that really [TS]

00:10:20   there's one that I can think of that [TS]

00:10:21   really are comedies that at least at [TS]

00:10:24   least in some way hinge upon a mother [TS]

00:10:27   falling in love with her son and it's I [TS]

00:10:29   mean I think it's pretty remarkable that [TS]

00:10:30   back to the future succeeded despite or [TS]

00:10:33   because well why is it right that right [TS]

00:10:35   i mean the horror of michael j fox of [TS]

00:10:37   being it when Lea Thompson comes onto [TS]

00:10:39   him [TS]

00:10:39   it's easy so he is horrified she was [TS]

00:10:42   totally hot and he's horrified by it its [TS]

00:10:45   kind of brilliant [TS]

00:10:46   yes yeah the comedy is what sold it [TS]

00:10:49   right because it's a funny situation [TS]

00:10:50   because he is terrified by it and and [TS]

00:10:53   it's so cool it's oh it's gross and what [TS]

00:10:55   was my mother doing with we've already [TS]

00:10:57   seen her at that point right don't know [TS]

00:10:58   we said inner fat younger one serious [TS]

00:11:01   yeah [TS]

00:11:02   in the present so we just have one had [TS]

00:11:05   ever let it sit the president now that [TS]

00:11:07   ass but it was the future right we [TS]

00:11:09   should go back there at some point it's [TS]

00:11:10   very confusing very confusing yeah that [TS]

00:11:13   again and I i drilled this a little bit [TS]

00:11:15   before already but you know the what I [TS]

00:11:17   loved about back to the future and still [TS]

00:11:19   do is that it's it stays very honest to [TS]

00:11:22   its interpretation of time travel and [TS]

00:11:23   I'm thinking specifically of how like [TS]

00:11:25   flight of the navigator violates all [TS]

00:11:27   kinds of time-travel logic where that [TS]

00:11:29   you know that if you're familiar with [TS]

00:11:31   the film at the end the boys brought [TS]

00:11:32   back to the present but another version [TS]

00:11:34   of the boy has simply disappeared there [TS]

00:11:35   should be two versions of the the star [TS]

00:11:37   center boy by the National marant but [TS]

00:11:40   back to the future throughout the entire [TS]

00:11:41   trilogy really is very consistent about [TS]

00:11:43   you know if i go back to the past [TS]

00:11:44   there's a version of me there perhaps [TS]

00:11:45   right so they have them sneaking through [TS]

00:11:47   and you've got you know the in back to [TS]

00:11:50   the part to you have him going back to [TS]

00:11:51   the fifties again he has to avoid his [TS]

00:11:53   other self right and he has to avoid you [TS]

00:11:56   know standards for Christmas Glover in [TS]

00:11:57   the whole thing [TS]

00:11:58   strike strike and i love that the arm [TS]

00:12:02   you you have in the original movie that [TS]

00:12:06   that a christopher lloyd is in both [TS]

00:12:09   timelines but he's but in the past [TS]

00:12:12   obviously he doesn't know about Marty so [TS]

00:12:14   Marty have to explain it to em right and [TS]

00:12:16   that that's great and that makes sense [TS]

00:12:18   but the the beauty part of that is that [TS]

00:12:20   when Marty returns to the present at the [TS]

00:12:22   end of the movie returns to 1985 Doc [TS]

00:12:25   Brown says to Marty I knew this was all [TS]

00:12:28   going to happen because it happened for [TS]

00:12:30   me in the fifties which is this [TS]

00:12:32   internally consistent story right which [TS]

00:12:35   is such a nice as a big sci-fi geek in [TS]

00:12:38   1985 was like yes they didn't they [TS]

00:12:40   didn't let that go [TS]

00:12:41   they made it of course it was him in the [TS]

00:12:43   past and now in the present me he [TS]

00:12:46   remembers all of that but at the same [TS]

00:12:48   time his parents seem to have no [TS]

00:12:50   recollection that somebody who [TS]

00:12:51   apparently turns out to look exactly [TS]

00:12:53   like his son right [TS]

00:12:55   yeah it was just you know he was with [TS]

00:12:56   some guy do for like a few days it's [TS]

00:12:59   Catholic although mostly just really [TS]

00:13:01   that's funny so he does he just he does [TS]

00:13:03   change the timeline another one does [TS]

00:13:06   that was that's one of the funny things [TS]

00:13:07   about the movie is that when he comes [TS]

00:13:09   back it's not the same time when his [TS]

00:13:11   parents like have a big house right now [TS]

00:13:13   his father's success [TS]

00:13:14   biz like the family slow my favorite my [TS]

00:13:17   favorite of all realistic-looking Glover [TS]

00:13:19   would be a lifesaver change my favorite [TS]

00:13:21   change the remains when he leaves of [TS]

00:13:24   course it's the Twin Pines mall and he [TS]

00:13:25   comes back in the future and knocks down [TS]

00:13:27   a tree and then when he comes back it's [TS]

00:13:29   the Lone Pine just one of the best [TS]

00:13:32   Louisville you'll blink and you'll miss [TS]

00:13:33   it but it's great it's a great little [TS]

00:13:36   yes I think you know another key element [TS]

00:13:38   of how it handles time travel is that [TS]

00:13:39   when they come back for the sequel one [TS]

00:13:41   Crispin Glover is played by somebody [TS]

00:13:43   else and to Marty's girlfriend is much [TS]

00:13:45   much hotter Elisabeth Shue after [TS]

00:13:47   Elizabeth Shue becomes the girlfriend in [TS]

00:13:49   episode and is today at two and second [TS]

00:13:51   right yeah really run a porch somewhere [TS]

00:13:52   and chance again Elizabeth sure right [TS]

00:13:55   yeah they just couldn't get her back you [TS]

00:13:57   know what you know what i mean the the [TS]

00:13:59   fact that grew into the store with [TS]

00:14:00   Christmas Glover is probably not so [TS]

00:14:01   relevant to our topic right now be no he [TS]

00:14:03   he wanted more money than they were [TS]

00:14:04   willing to pay him to come and he was [TS]

00:14:06   career-ready it wasn't his credit he's [TS]

00:14:08   trying to kick david letterman in the [TS]

00:14:10   head so that they shoot around him and [TS]

00:14:11   you standards and another actor in such [TS]

00:14:13   a right and that changed the how [TS]

00:14:16   Hollywood actors now get paid for [TS]

00:14:17   residuals and reuse of your films of it [TS]

00:14:19   changed the laws about you have to treat [TS]

00:14:21   those actors so they affected the future [TS]

00:14:23   making back to the future just know [TS]

00:14:25   that's why is quite artful in the second [TS]

00:14:28   movie not I there are a lot of things I [TS]

00:14:29   don't like about the second movie but [TS]

00:14:31   what i do hi I'm with Max is why i don't [TS]

00:14:33   think it's quite artful that how they [TS]

00:14:34   they make you it's it's a little bit [TS]

00:14:37   like what deep space nine went back [TS]

00:14:38   through the original Star Trek episode [TS]

00:14:40   it's like we don't have these actors are [TS]

00:14:41   there at least not the same age but [TS]

00:14:42   we'll we'll be doing the general manager [TS]

00:14:45   and some Crispin Glover they had his [TS]

00:14:46   dialogue and they have people from the [TS]

00:14:48   backside who were doubling for him and [TS]

00:14:50   it you can't you can't really tell that [TS]

00:14:54   he's not a participant other than the [TS]

00:14:56   story surrounding it which is that it [TS]

00:14:57   wasn't to your point about the second [TS]

00:14:59   movie I think we have to go around the [TS]

00:15:01   room now and everybody's favorite [TS]

00:15:03   episode your favorite movie in the [TS]

00:15:05   trilogy is ok ok i think it would be [TS]

00:15:08   obvious yeah i'll start I think the [TS]

00:15:11   first movie is is clearly the best of [TS]

00:15:13   three [TS]

00:15:14   clearly I i think from up from a [TS]

00:15:17   filmmaking perspective I think the first [TS]

00:15:19   one making out tops but i think the [TS]

00:15:21   second one is my favorite and I think [TS]

00:15:23   part of it has to do with it was the it [TS]

00:15:24   was actually future it was the future [TS]

00:15:26   which is an inward everywhere [TS]

00:15:28   motherboard rewards now because if it [TS]

00:15:31   and if you were if you were a kid in [TS]

00:15:32   that era as I was and lex was yes um you [TS]

00:15:36   knew the urban legend [TS]

00:15:38   did you know what were you familiar with [TS]

00:15:39   the urban legends that Mandela has a day [TS]

00:15:41   made personally made hoverboard but they [TS]

00:15:43   were too dangerous to release and so [TS]

00:15:45   every year every kid was nine-year-olds [TS]

00:15:48   was like oh my god i want to offer for [TS]

00:15:50   you really badly because robert zemeckis [TS]

00:15:52   would say yes you did [TS]

00:15:53   so gullible this happens to be one of [TS]

00:15:55   the biggest search terms of my friends [TS]

00:15:57   of our blog was hoverboard television [TS]

00:15:59   fix your favorite of the time my [TS]

00:16:00   favorite was like Jason the first you [TS]

00:16:04   know nobody learns get word was so i can [TS]

00:16:06   talk about third but I've got a lot to [TS]

00:16:09   say about the food i remember waiting in [TS]

00:16:10   line actually waiting in line and watch [TS]

00:16:12   what I have to say I and this is I quit [TS]

00:16:16   ability to get no Lex this been alright [TS]

00:16:19   crisis this podcasters over and okay the [TS]

00:16:21   phrases this point guess was over [TS]

00:16:23   you know I've gotta I've gotta say I'm [TS]

00:16:25   not fair to the second but I have a I [TS]

00:16:27   have a thing about movies that end as [TS]

00:16:30   and wait for the third because it's [TS]

00:16:32   organized going to make the reservation [TS]

00:16:33   on the back to back you and your family [TS]

00:16:35   they came outside your own part yeah [TS]

00:16:37   they were basically filmed like the same [TS]

00:16:38   time yeah and and that to me I was very [TS]

00:16:41   offended by that in that because and [TS]

00:16:42   actually i don't remember honestly that [TS]

00:16:45   was the first movie I'd ever been to [TS]

00:16:46   where it was that obvious that they made [TS]

00:16:49   to movies as one life first one ends on [TS]

00:16:52   a cliffhanger straight what has already [TS]

00:16:54   has a little dinner theaters yeah it [TS]

00:16:55   said you know it's just the ending of [TS]

00:16:57   the movie with my recent video it said [TS]

00:16:59   to wait there any but there's a coda in [TS]

00:17:01   terms of the story they go oh we're [TS]

00:17:02   going we don't need roads all your kids [TS]

00:17:04   they're in trouble yeah exactly [TS]

00:17:06   we gotta go get with that could have [TS]

00:17:08   been just the end of the movie like yeah [TS]

00:17:09   it was like the second was the second [TS]

00:17:11   was really liked the story was not [TS]

00:17:13   finished yeah i think that that I don't [TS]

00:17:15   speak for you [TS]

00:17:16   damn more but I mean that's what please [TS]

00:17:18   pick them it was exciting to me about [TS]

00:17:19   part2 wasn't just knew hoverboards but [TS]

00:17:21   it was the future you know they were [TS]

00:17:23   fully at cars there was you know the [TS]

00:17:25   crazy self-tightening shoes and jackets [TS]

00:17:28   and prices on sports almanacs printed on [TS]

00:17:30   paper and look at the three jaws [TS]

00:17:33   is that that stuff while the double the [TS]

00:17:36   double neckties was awesome video [TS]

00:17:38   conferencing and when will we ever we [TS]

00:17:40   barely more geeky fun but and I want to [TS]

00:17:44   summarize surprised you like the level [TS]

00:17:46   the level of ramaj too i think was also [TS]

00:17:48   just you know that there are also many [TS]

00:17:50   direct references and it ties in so [TS]

00:17:52   closely with the first one that feels [TS]

00:17:54   that part of the larger story you know [TS]

00:17:55   the first one was a great story with was [TS]

00:17:57   very brilliantly handle for short but [TS]

00:17:58   the second one didn't just have the cool [TS]

00:18:00   future stuff but it also had the cool [TS]

00:18:02   passed up all the alternatives that [TS]

00:18:03   right yeah parties there with more is oh [TS]

00:18:06   my god is called well do you have a [TS]

00:18:07   verdict on this on the second movie on [TS]

00:18:10   which is but which of them is your [TS]

00:18:11   favorite on choose well everybody know [TS]

00:18:16   I'm not gonna save your dresser all [TS]

00:18:18   making what is myself we're wrapping up [TS]

00:18:20   the third no well i will write the third [TS]

00:18:21   one but I don't say it's my favorite the [TS]

00:18:23   phrases [TS]

00:18:23   the first is definitely my favorite just [TS]

00:18:25   because it stands up having having I [TS]

00:18:29   mean taking on AMC AMC showed back to [TS]

00:18:33   the future in theaters for its 25th 30 [TS]

00:18:36   2015 yeah 25th anniversary I the blue [TS]

00:18:40   right came out and then they also [TS]

00:18:41   rereleased unfortunately a digital print [TS]

00:18:44   but still a print of the 35 millimeter [TS]

00:18:46   film into theaters for a rerelease and [TS]

00:18:49   that was the most fun I've had a theater [TS]

00:18:51   in a couple years because like you know [TS]

00:18:54   you some some movies you remember from [TS]

00:18:56   your childhood they're not as great and [TS]

00:18:57   back to the future without a doubt [TS]

00:18:59   stands up its it's still I mean means [TS]

00:19:01   it's hilarious on every point and you [TS]

00:19:03   just like that entire films just [TS]

00:19:05   Gideon's like smiling like a little kid [TS]

00:19:08   the entire time i will say from an epic [TS]

00:19:11   kind of scale even though it didn't [TS]

00:19:13   always work the third one has a lot of [TS]

00:19:15   fun to it the idea of building a time [TS]

00:19:17   machine out of a train remains endlessly [TS]

00:19:21   amusing to me the gun battles the the [TS]

00:19:23   now there's the god I see I i don't [TS]

00:19:27   remember the third one except in images [TS]

00:19:29   and like little bit but there's a man [TS]

00:19:31   has the remit the the the sort of branch [TS]

00:19:34   off plot from the first one it's very [TS]

00:19:35   similar in the first one there back in [TS]

00:19:36   time and they don't have any plutonium [TS]

00:19:37   and the third one back there any gas you [TS]

00:19:41   prefer the first of 3rd feel like [TS]

00:19:43   standalone movies yeah and the second [TS]

00:19:45   one and this is my complaint about the [TS]

00:19:46   second one is [TS]

00:19:47   second one is about the first movie [TS]

00:19:49   which is awesome and and I didn't like [TS]

00:19:55   the future stuff so much and I think [TS]

00:19:57   part of it [TS]

00:19:57   it relaxes making a horrible yeah i [TS]

00:20:00   think part of it is I'm flying cars days [TS]

00:20:03   not you know I want my flying car [TS]

00:20:05   there's something you'd really something [TS]

00:20:07   about a plot that it's just something [TS]

00:20:10   about the plot seems very mechanical to [TS]

00:20:12   me like they were so constrained by what [TS]

00:20:14   had been said in the first movie and [TS]

00:20:16   where they knew they need to go that it [TS]

00:20:18   just all seems kind of like they're they [TS]

00:20:21   had to step through a and B and C to get [TS]

00:20:23   where they need to go and so although [TS]

00:20:25   the individual i'll grant you the [TS]

00:20:27   individual like little touches like the [TS]

00:20:29   hoverboards are really cool [TS]

00:20:31   the plot in that part c but i really [TS]

00:20:33   love you and really mechanical like well [TS]

00:20:35   we gotta get bit and we gotta send it [TS]

00:20:37   back to you but i love the only thing i [TS]

00:20:39   love the alternate history that they set [TS]

00:20:41   up to like this day that they you know [TS]

00:20:43   everything changes right with this one [TS]

00:20:44   little detail you bring back that [TS]

00:20:46   Almanac and everything changes you've [TS]

00:20:48   got this whole alternate until by the [TS]

00:20:50   way let's not let's not discount the [TS]

00:20:51   right he threw the ball back to himself [TS]

00:20:53   in a very very cool shot [TS]

00:20:54   yes it's just that my friend here if [TS]

00:20:57   you're gonna affect the future that's [TS]

00:20:58   how you do it right you you two stories [TS]

00:21:00   that that's right it's clever i know all [TS]

00:21:01   the winners i can make bets i could make [TS]

00:21:03   a lot of money and I think he probably [TS]

00:21:04   that would probably explain to people [TS]

00:21:06   that if they ever do get to travel back [TS]

00:21:07   in time but they should bring very [TS]

00:21:08   famous words on the Android LA sports [TS]

00:21:12   Almanac sales shot up I don't be [TS]

00:21:15   surprised me to me it's not it wasn't [TS]

00:21:17   just the future stuff that I love to [TS]

00:21:18   back to do they were there were two [TS]

00:21:20   other pieces one like it we talked about [TS]

00:21:21   you know just having multiple Marty's it [TS]

00:21:23   seems the same time I love that that's [TS]

00:21:24   national radio beyond Marty with Marty [TS]

00:21:27   in you know what I just like the idea [TS]

00:21:30   that he's gotta go into the future to [TS]

00:21:32   help make his you know kids not be [TS]

00:21:34   screwed up your kids r kids we could [TS]

00:21:36   have to blame them but then there's also [TS]

00:21:38   that they were seeing that they didn't [TS]

00:21:40   have to do where Mark where Michael J [TS]

00:21:42   Fox plays multiple roles around the [TS]

00:21:43   dinner table i will see a tail that's [TS]

00:21:46   very at that's very Eddie Murphy I'm i [TS]

00:21:48   think i did explain [TS]

00:21:50   there are three ever did it not only [TS]

00:21:52   ridiculous voices he's just playing just [TS]

00:21:54   playing this kid he's gonna the daughter [TS]

00:21:56   to right he plays the daughter in that's [TS]

00:21:57   a yes [TS]

00:21:58   the thing about Roberts Max's movies in [TS]

00:22:00   terms of back to the future in general [TS]

00:22:02   as i love how theatrical they are and [TS]

00:22:05   and Goofy and cheesy to a certain extent [TS]

00:22:07   i mean you have this is a film medium [TS]

00:22:10   and it could have been very very easy [TS]

00:22:11   for them to either cast different actors [TS]

00:22:14   for the adults and the children the [TS]

00:22:16   first movie or to do anything like it [TS]

00:22:18   are extolled yeah right i mean but I [TS]

00:22:21   mean they go Dax they they go with age [TS]

00:22:23   makeup they go with very theatrical [TS]

00:22:25   things that you do on the state and very [TS]

00:22:28   and very exaggerated age makeup too and [TS]

00:22:30   it's basically saying to the audience [TS]

00:22:32   yes we know these are people enable a [TS]

00:22:33   guy Thompson sort of horrifying yeah how [TS]

00:22:36   many ways do they have her because they [TS]

00:22:37   ever made up at the beginning of back [TS]

00:22:39   feature at the end of back feature which [TS]

00:22:40   you look slightly just thought that I [TS]

00:22:41   should yes and then alternate in the [TS]

00:22:43   alternate timeline in back into having [TS]

00:22:46   made up differently and 45 originally [TS]

00:22:48   partially yes she appears another 12 as [TS]

00:22:50   the doesn't she says there's an ancestor [TS]

00:22:53   yeah yeah yeah don't know that strange [TS]

00:22:55   all the ancestors look like you one of [TS]

00:22:57   the little bit we went which day Michael [TS]

00:23:00   J blocks without the muscle dad yeah [TS]

00:23:02   Irish and others really really exists [TS]

00:23:04   and has a lot of really dominant jesus [TS]

00:23:06   said yeah that's all we can say about [TS]

00:23:07   that [TS]

00:23:08   editor's all look the same but the other [TS]

00:23:10   piece that that's spelling i also number [TS]

00:23:13   two handles time-travel I want to be [TS]

00:23:14   from getting this right so you'll all [TS]

00:23:15   quick me if I'm wrong viciously will but [TS]

00:23:17   yes you know in number two bit goes back [TS]

00:23:20   to the past gives himself the Almanac [TS]

00:23:22   and then comes back to the future and [TS]

00:23:23   then they they but it doesn't make sense [TS]

00:23:27   that he has successfully come back to [TS]

00:23:28   the future since he's already been to [TS]

00:23:29   change right yes but when you get the [TS]

00:23:31   DVD or blu-ray and you see the deleted [TS]

00:23:33   scene there's a whole scene where if [TS]

00:23:35   comes back from having give himself the [TS]

00:23:37   time when he managed somehow to before [TS]

00:23:38   before past BF has time to deal with the [TS]

00:23:41   Almanac and change the course of history [TS]

00:23:43   or future history if returns to the what [TS]

00:23:48   would have been the current president [TS]

00:23:49   and then suddenly like vanishes from the [TS]

00:23:51   timeline and if in a painful physical [TS]

00:23:53   way as the future is changing all around [TS]

00:23:56   him and they have this deleted scene [TS]

00:23:57   that they took out because they didn't [TS]

00:23:58   think audiences can handle probably [TS]

00:23:59   right but just the fact that they were [TS]

00:24:01   thinking about it that way that he [TS]

00:24:02   couldn't have really successfully come [TS]

00:24:03   back to [TS]

00:24:04   what had been his present i thought was [TS]

00:24:06   very smart [TS]

00:24:07   yeah i'm just throwing that out when you [TS]

00:24:09   were going still talking about you were [TS]

00:24:10   talking I robert zemeckis yeah just [TS]

00:24:12   didn't notice the inherent theatrically [TS]

00:24:14   here at reality of it all and how in [TS]

00:24:17   utterly enjoyable and makes the movies [TS]

00:24:19   which would otherwise I mean they're [TS]

00:24:20   fairly can't be movies when you take a [TS]

00:24:23   look at it and I do not think they would [TS]

00:24:25   have they would stand the test of time [TS]

00:24:27   as well as they have if the campus [TS]

00:24:29   hadn't been so thoroughly embraced like [TS]

00:24:31   if they had tried to pitch back to the [TS]

00:24:33   future more seriously right did they [TS]

00:24:35   don't take themselves seriously I think [TS]

00:24:37   that's part of the beauty of that and [TS]

00:24:38   that's kind of beauty of the time travel [TS]

00:24:39   too is it's like-- yes we're giving [TS]

00:24:41   we're giving you fairly complicated [TS]

00:24:43   stuff but we're giving it to you with a [TS]

00:24:45   crazy scientist and we're basically [TS]

00:24:47   saying no none of this stuff makes sense [TS]

00:24:49   and hey look at the flux capacitor and [TS]

00:24:51   no it doesn't he invented all falling [TS]

00:24:53   off his toilet right yeah exactly [TS]

00:24:55   everybody couldn't have invented it in [TS]

00:24:56   some ways without em you know Marty [TS]

00:24:58   coming back into the past telling him [TS]

00:25:00   you did you think of this today when you [TS]

00:25:02   fell off the toilet because he had [TS]

00:25:03   doctrine hadn't acted on it right until [TS]

00:25:05   Marty plan services and try on Tranzit [TS]

00:25:07   right look at all the things that bugged [TS]

00:25:08   me about that but I was perfect for [TS]

00:25:10   frizzy the time-travel I kind of love [TS]

00:25:12   the idea that that which which which [TS]

00:25:14   back to the future doesn't embrace but i [TS]

00:25:15   love the idea of time travel movies [TS]

00:25:16   where what you say is what happened [TS]

00:25:18   happened right and so why did lost its a [TS]

00:25:22   pat it's a paradox but it's not a [TS]

00:25:24   paradox it's like well of course doctor [TS]

00:25:26   and density because of the time-travel [TS]

00:25:28   that comes back to and recommended [TS]

00:25:30   mostly well how is that possible because [TS]

00:25:31   that's what happened you don't even go [TS]

00:25:34   into it anymore than that there's maybe [TS]

00:25:35   something simplified great a [TS]

00:25:38   spanish-language movie that came out a [TS]

00:25:39   couple years ago crime crimes [TS]

00:25:42   there's front of her time time crimes is [TS]

00:25:45   made by not-so-legal ando who is a [TS]

00:25:47   Spanish Spanish director who made a [TS]

00:25:50   couple of short films that were academy [TS]

00:25:51   award-nominated and this was his first [TS]

00:25:54   full-length feature and it's it takes [TS]

00:25:56   some cues from back to the future in [TS]

00:25:58   terms of how time travel works but [TS]

00:26:00   without spoiling too much of the movie [TS]

00:26:01   and it's a movie that can be very easily [TS]

00:26:03   spoiled it's all about embracing the [TS]

00:26:06   inherent absurdity of paradoxes it's a [TS]

00:26:08   murder mystery wrapped in a time travel [TS]

00:26:11   story is creepy as heck but one of the [TS]

00:26:14   most fascinating movies that I've ever [TS]

00:26:16   seen [TS]

00:26:17   was gonna ask later uh what people if [TS]

00:26:19   they've got a great time travel movies [TS]

00:26:21   have you just said you just blown it I [TS]

00:26:23   just I just blown I just blend we're [TS]

00:26:25   going to bed early y-yes obey you gave [TS]

00:26:28   me such a such a perfect already like [TS]

00:26:30   California x alla Terry I segue yeah you [TS]

00:26:33   probably a crown future yeah but it's [TS]

00:26:34   bad it's true it's ready and tell me [TS]

00:26:36   what i'm doing and one but i just want [TS]

00:26:39   to say on one last point between number [TS]

00:26:41   two and number one in terms of which is [TS]

00:26:42   the better film that number one the [TS]

00:26:45   number wanted a few I is worse yes that [TS]

00:26:47   the first got back to the future will [TS]

00:26:50   always for me be hindered and I didn't [TS]

00:26:51   realize it initially on my first [TS]

00:26:53   watching but only later by its inherent [TS]

00:26:55   racism and giving marty mcfly credit for [TS]

00:27:00   inventing rock and roll music and [TS]

00:27:02   stealing it from you know Chuck Barry [TS]

00:27:04   Chuck Baron it's your cousin Marvin [TS]

00:27:08   Harry and that's because yeah Barry can [TS]

00:27:11   only better because Marty McFly goes [TS]

00:27:12   back in time to play is it and then [TS]

00:27:13   Chuck Berry here's and if you do how [TS]

00:27:15   long plate but again paradoxes right now [TS]

00:27:17   but i mean it's it's a it's a i would [TS]

00:27:18   say you know one could look at it [TS]

00:27:21   through the a picolo of races you could [TS]

00:27:23   also say that the check berry and Marvin [TS]

00:27:25   his cousin have good taste because they [TS]

00:27:28   chose the classic rock and roll of [TS]

00:27:30   Johnny be good and not the ridiculous [TS]

00:27:33   heavy metal guitar solo through that [TS]

00:27:36   Michael J Fox played that left everybody [TS]

00:27:37   kind of silent which is a great scene by [TS]

00:27:40   the way it's like I push this too far [TS]

00:27:41   but you're not ready you're gonna love [TS]

00:27:44   it right right right we just great [TS]

00:27:46   tweets so let's talk about the third [TS]

00:27:47   movie a little bit because it is [TS]

00:27:49   fascinating because the second movie is [TS]

00:27:51   clearly second movie is clearly a sequel [TS]

00:27:54   to the first movie and it's about the [TS]

00:27:55   first movie in many ways the third movie [TS]

00:27:57   is just a story in this universe it's a [TS]

00:28:01   very different kind of thing I honestly [TS]

00:28:03   I have a very hard time judging this [TS]

00:28:05   movie I like it but I i don't think i [TS]

00:28:09   can view it objectively largely because [TS]

00:28:11   it is almost entirely shot on location [TS]

00:28:14   in the town i grew up in I because I [TS]

00:28:18   grew up in sonora california and they [TS]

00:28:20   built that they built Hill Valley and [TS]

00:28:22   now i live in mill valley which is even [TS]

00:28:24   more confusing they built your little [TS]

00:28:25   oranges and I [TS]

00:28:27   I'm not going to say the the and more [TS]

00:28:29   than I&I mr. fusion to the that's where [TS]

00:28:32   my compost goes the the they built it [TS]

00:28:35   out outside of town and because that we [TS]

00:28:38   out in the foothills in Northern [TS]

00:28:40   California you can get it doubles very [TS]

00:28:42   well for for the Old West and then [TS]

00:28:45   movies High Noon was shot there i mean [TS]

00:28:48   that it's it's a great Old West setting [TS]

00:28:50   in California so they should movies [TS]

00:28:51   there and so I have friends who are in [TS]

00:28:53   there extras and and so it's very hard [TS]

00:28:56   for me to judge it but the two or three [TS]

00:28:58   times that I've seen it i I've been [TS]

00:29:00   struck by how it's just kind of fun [TS]

00:29:02   it's very entertaining it is not [TS]

00:29:04   encumbered by the story previously and [TS]

00:29:08   it's almost like that that's the [TS]

00:29:09   franchise movie it's almost like the [TS]

00:29:11   first two are kind of tied together and [TS]

00:29:12   they're like it and it's not true [TS]

00:29:14   because they shot set two and three [TS]

00:29:15   together and yet three feels like the [TS]

00:29:18   hey let's do another back to the future [TS]

00:29:19   story instead of let's follow up on the [TS]

00:29:22   last scene from the first movie and tie [TS]

00:29:24   a whole story together I don't know me [TS]

00:29:27   know if you guys feel that way i really [TS]

00:29:29   like does yeah I like three but I mean I [TS]

00:29:31   don't know the lead up to that I was [TS]

00:29:32   just a brief word about the end of two [TS]

00:29:34   like I will say that's one of the parts [TS]

00:29:36   that still gives me goosebumps right [TS]

00:29:37   towards the end of 2 where he gets you [TS]

00:29:39   know he watches the DeLorean vanish [TS]

00:29:40   anything for my western union guy comes [TS]

00:29:43   up i love that such a great saying it's [TS]

00:29:44   a fantastic see and also traditional [TS]

00:29:46   dances around and then he's like oh my [TS]

00:29:47   god how do i get back right and so he [TS]

00:29:50   has to run and find you know diets i [TS]

00:29:52   love that part that setup but the third [TS]

00:29:54   one is it it's a very entertaining movie [TS]

00:29:56   and it's got some it's a little bit [TS]

00:29:59   off-kilter from some of the other ones [TS]

00:30:01   you know you got doc brown get to love [TS]

00:30:02   interest [TS]

00:30:03   mary steenburgen every major American [TS]

00:30:05   version and you get the you know Michael [TS]

00:30:08   J Fox are Marty dealing with his his [TS]

00:30:10   older you know ancestors which gardens [TS]

00:30:13   suspiciously similar circumstances that [TS]

00:30:15   you are outside of his familiar i [TS]

00:30:16   thinkyeah withhold West motif which is [TS]

00:30:19   like 30 min but for me my the the [TS]

00:30:22   biggest issues I had with it is i I've [TS]

00:30:24   never i'm not a huge fan of the western [TS]

00:30:25   genre in particular so sort of lightly [TS]

00:30:27   parodying skewering it didn't really [TS]

00:30:29   work for me as well as the other two and [TS]

00:30:31   I I didn't like how the third movie felt [TS]

00:30:33   derivative to me of its predecessors i [TS]

00:30:35   got i felt like to built on one in an [TS]

00:30:37   original way you know reworking some of [TS]

00:30:39   the scenes trying to be [TS]

00:30:40   where three really tried to take a [TS]

00:30:41   different direction which I applaud but [TS]

00:30:43   it's very similar getting the getting [TS]

00:30:44   the facts and now the facts is going to [TS]

00:30:46   change from saying your fire to fading [TS]

00:30:48   away slowly again it's not an instant [TS]

00:30:49   change like the photograph should have [TS]

00:30:51   been it's a it's a slow gradual changes [TS]

00:30:53   Marty perfects his future life and just [TS]

00:30:56   you know using that image changing over [TS]

00:30:58   time technique again and I don't I felt [TS]

00:31:00   that AP copy itself too much I'd say is [TS]

00:31:02   that the same time though as a kid [TS]

00:31:03   growing up watching them it was just [TS]

00:31:06   kind of like all right it's the first [TS]

00:31:07   movie but in the old west and that was [TS]

00:31:09   perfectly ok as a seven-year yeah but [TS]

00:31:11   they knew the hoverboard to they really [TS]

00:31:13   did but I mean they had you know when it [TS]

00:31:15   has a super time you're like cool train [TS]

00:31:17   not not until the end I don't think it's [TS]

00:31:20   still that was a really also a great a [TS]

00:31:22   great wrap up to i think you know [TS]

00:31:23   they're it's hard [TS]

00:31:25   do you end the series you spin it out to [TS]

00:31:27   another franchise and I think you know [TS]

00:31:28   they came to the point where a ride or [TS]

00:31:31   to a ride somewhere or an animated [TS]

00:31:33   series which they did as well but I like [TS]

00:31:35   the I mean they destroyed they destroyed [TS]

00:31:37   that the DeLorean right you know in that [TS]

00:31:38   last scene which is kind of [TS]

00:31:39   heartbreaking but the same time also you [TS]

00:31:41   know like it's a fitting but then things [TS]

00:31:43   get it right they destroy the Lord you [TS]

00:31:45   think was powerful but then the trains [TS]

00:31:46   of time-travel yeah yeah so they can I [TS]

00:31:48   don't like that for me and I don't like [TS]

00:31:50   the trade as much i don't know i'm i'm [TS]

00:31:52   grateful for robert zemeckis destroying [TS]

00:31:54   the DeLorean because of where his career [TS]

00:31:55   has gone now and I'm really afraid of [TS]

00:31:57   back to the future foreign 3d they [TS]

00:32:00   became legendary person capture yeah [TS]

00:32:02   everybody to discuss whether or not they [TS]

00:32:04   would do a fourth and shot only just [TS]

00:32:06   uncanny valley exactly like Daniel shot [TS]

00:32:09   it down like 10 right yeah well those [TS]

00:32:12   Americans you know he's made some i mean [TS]

00:32:15   yeah he did porks pretty to contact [TS]

00:32:16   which I really like sitting as when was [TS]

00:32:18   when was contact may come in the [TS]

00:32:20   nineties exactly [TS]

00:32:22   robert zemeckis kind of went down at [TS]

00:32:24   about 1000 hehe and he went into some [TS]

00:32:27   weird actually [TS]

00:32:28   sure yes exactly know he works with that [TS]

00:32:30   I mean I know we can edit them afterward [TS]

00:32:32   that correctly from wrong and I very [TS]

00:32:34   well could be but i'm pretty sure you're [TS]

00:32:35   wrong [TS]

00:32:36   the back to the form i will try the back [TS]

00:32:38   to the future even if you're right Marty [TS]

00:32:40   McFly hating to be called yellow only [TS]

00:32:43   starts in the second it'sit's using the [TS]

00:32:45   second and third movie but it never have [TS]

00:32:47   now [TS]

00:32:48   first-first yeah you're our daughter we [TS]

00:32:51   have where to call hours they come [TS]

00:32:53   coward but they don't call them because [TS]

00:32:55   it's in the second movies is nobody [TS]

00:32:57   calls me yellow I think that it happens [TS]

00:32:59   I feel like it does in nineteen does not [TS]

00:33:02   he does yeah they don't use the [TS]

00:33:04   terminology yellow but they do you say [TS]

00:33:06   doesn't weird it's like all the work of [TS]

00:33:08   Martin require no it's itself in for [TS]

00:33:11   ventricular threatened surpassed yeah [TS]

00:33:13   yeah friends you like an invalid yeah [TS]

00:33:15   diner on the kind of examples like what [TS]

00:33:17   chicken or coward or so because of [TS]

00:33:19   chicken yeah chicken and then he turned [TS]

00:33:22   around and punched him but yeah yeah [TS]

00:33:23   chicken but yeah we'll get some he's a [TS]

00:33:25   vegetarian clearly evolved and invest in [TS]

00:33:29   you actually didn't speaking of great [TS]

00:33:30   scenes a fantastic scene where he meets [TS]

00:33:33   his uncle who's a baby behind it was in [TS]

00:33:36   the crib to those boxes yeah actually [TS]

00:33:39   you know one of the funny things that [TS]

00:33:41   about that has made this movie aah well [TS]

00:33:42   is that in the movie his eighties [TS]

00:33:46   trappings are made fun of by the people [TS]

00:33:48   in the fifties right because they're not [TS]

00:33:50   like they're not like 50 skier and his [TS]

00:33:53   lightweight which is funny writing his [TS]

00:33:55   links FC now now it's great because now [TS]

00:33:57   we look at the eighties fashion and the [TS]

00:33:59   fifties people make fun of it and we go [TS]

00:34:01   haha yeah [TS]

00:34:02   ladies fashion was funny so it's [TS]

00:34:04   actually I think aged better or just as [TS]

00:34:08   well because why is he wearing not see [TS]

00:34:09   that yeah this is a lower rate [TS]

00:34:12   calvin klein you have so many mysteries [TS]

00:34:15   to teach us about her for me from the [TS]

00:34:17   future [TS]

00:34:18   I also the DeLorean I guess we should [TS]

00:34:21   say I eat last time machine ironic i was [TS]

00:34:24   to dan dan and I actually both on the [TS]

00:34:26   same t-shirt which is a classic t-shirt [TS]

00:34:28   that that actually Chris Hardwick from [TS]

00:34:30   the Nerdist podcast war on craig [TS]

00:34:32   ferguson show when matt smith from [TS]

00:34:33   doctor who was on it that's a lot of [TS]

00:34:35   names that so basically so basically [TS]

00:34:38   unpack this know there's too much let me [TS]

00:34:40   sum up the guy from The Nerdist podcast [TS]

00:34:43   that I'm gonna wear a doctor who shirt [TS]

00:34:45   on craig ferguson show what should i [TS]

00:34:47   wear and I thought well I know what I [TS]

00:34:49   would wear and it turns out he wore it [TS]

00:34:51   which is the same thing that i have in [TS]

00:34:52   that Dan has which is a shirt called it [TS]

00:34:54   came out of nowhere which shows the the [TS]

00:34:57   DeLorean from Back to the Future having [TS]

00:34:59   raised [TS]

00:34:59   into the TARDIS from Doctor Who which is [TS]

00:35:02   is just great it's really is on so many [TS]

00:35:05   levels and to have that you can provide [TS]

00:35:07   what the original time she was supposed [TS]

00:35:09   to be in the back to the future series [TS]

00:35:10   and why they moved away from it is this [TS]

00:35:12   jeopardy now you will know i gave you [TS]

00:35:14   the question so clearly is not jeopardy [TS]

00:35:16   relax you you know that wasn't it was a [TS]

00:35:19   phone booth like in building tells it [TS]

00:35:21   was supposed to be originally the [TS]

00:35:22   original draft was a refrigerator and [TS]

00:35:25   Steven Spielberg became as the producer [TS]

00:35:27   of the film became concerned that kids [TS]

00:35:28   would try to go into the refrigerator at [TS]

00:35:30   home so he saved that for indian [TS]

00:35:32   education that looks like they totally [TS]

00:35:35   blew that but now they don't be going to [TS]

00:35:36   ya-ya only three usually there's no way [TS]

00:35:39   we're gonna be nuclear explosion the [TS]

00:35:41   kids should go in there freezin [TS]

00:35:42   associations with the door and ended up [TS]

00:35:44   being not much better since you know [TS]

00:35:46   that cars then and his injuries to climb [TS]

00:35:49   into yes well yeah well yeah nobody [TS]

00:35:51   usually just drugs in the sidekick okay [TS]

00:35:53   no yeah actually it's it's in the end I [TS]

00:35:56   think it's like the greatest thing that [TS]

00:35:58   could ever have happened to delorean [TS]

00:36:00   motor company and I saw one goes on on [TS]

00:36:03   the on the road so it's just you know if [TS]

00:36:04   my dad was taking me the more I was a [TS]

00:36:06   teenager and I remember looking back and [TS]

00:36:08   there's just a guide like there's just [TS]

00:36:09   the floor and on the street like they [TS]

00:36:11   have only we quickly driving like I've [TS]

00:36:14   seen what I saw one on the freeway in LA [TS]

00:36:15   I dry we were driving home after a visit [TS]

00:36:18   la and it's in stainless steel it's [TS]

00:36:21   hilarious but but the thing that its Sun [TS]

00:36:23   is it has become the definitive thing so [TS]

00:36:26   now DeLoreans mean back to the future [TS]

00:36:29   right now [TS]

00:36:29   whereas the time it was like this [TS]

00:36:31   obscure no attempt to do a new American [TS]

00:36:34   car company that failed for a lot of [TS]

00:36:35   reasons and it's kinda adores you know [TS]

00:36:38   so so are perfect for time travel [TS]

00:36:40   yeah so so it's good getting money out [TS]

00:36:43   of an movie scenes to yes it's funny [TS]

00:36:46   that that has become the definitive [TS]

00:36:48   DeLoreans now for all eternity will be [TS]

00:36:51   the Back to the Future car right is a [TS]

00:36:53   mistake that we've got 88 miles an hour [TS]

00:36:54   without mentioning either Einstein or [TS]

00:36:56   Copernicus with the dogs [TS]

00:36:59   no no it's not insane it's just mildly [TS]

00:37:02   amusing we haven't talked about [TS]

00:37:03   Christopher Lloyd much either no not me [TS]

00:37:05   i would like to do because eighty eight [TS]

00:37:06   months because I pronounce gigawatts [TS]

00:37:10   wrong the entire chicka wat with a chair [TS]

00:37:12   yes one yet [TS]

00:37:13   yeah well you know what are you talking [TS]

00:37:14   about i've got a hundred twenty gigabyte [TS]

00:37:15   hard drive you [TS]

00:37:17   what do you mean I'm an ever-popular [TS]

00:37:20   will smith single gettin jiggy with it [TS]

00:37:22   yeah very nice crisp yeah it's [TS]

00:37:24   christopher lloyd from basically this [TS]

00:37:26   point from taxi [TS]

00:37:27   that's right and playing a similarly [TS]

00:37:30   kind of nutty character but I I think [TS]

00:37:33   he's like the heart and soul of this [TS]

00:37:34   movie was not just a mad scientist right [TS]

00:37:36   here it's really kind of touching when [TS]

00:37:37   you when Marty meets him in the fifties [TS]

00:37:39   Marty's best friend yeah yeah well the [TS]

00:37:41   relationship we got shot by the Libyans [TS]

00:37:43   and and obviously killed and he won't be [TS]

00:37:45   alive when we get back maybe it's the [TS]

00:37:47   Libyans although and back in the news [TS]

00:37:49   anyways actually seen the because of a [TS]

00:37:53   remix of back to the future there's a [TS]

00:37:55   trailer that they made to the idea of [TS]

00:37:57   brokeback mountain with the relationship [TS]

00:37:58   between Marty and rockband doc brown [TS]

00:38:00   which is that simultaneously kind of [TS]

00:38:03   strange but also still kind of touching [TS]

00:38:05   you can have they can almost always [TS]

00:38:08   plotting our story between the two doc [TS]

00:38:10   and Marty have a great relationship [TS]

00:38:12   it's needed no matter what it is love [TS]

00:38:14   knows no bounds not even time and you [TS]

00:38:16   have to believe that doctrine was [TS]

00:38:17   building that giant guitar amplifier for [TS]

00:38:19   Marty's benefits i want that house it [TS]

00:38:21   very sweet there's no there's no doubt [TS]

00:38:24   about it known that the in the first [TS]

00:38:27   movie the end you can I mean that n [TS]

00:38:29   sequences ate almost perfect bit of [TS]

00:38:32   suspense with the the countdown being a [TS]

00:38:35   uncontrollable because it's a lightning [TS]

00:38:37   strike that would would you can't delay [TS]

00:38:39   it or anything it's not like your usual [TS]

00:38:40   like James Bond you know countdown that [TS]

00:38:43   ends at 007 because it's it's known [TS]

00:38:47   because of time travel but it's going to [TS]

00:38:49   happen at a certain time and so they [TS]

00:38:50   have a timing and in those movies in the [TS]

00:38:52   first and the second movie actually the [TS]

00:38:54   third movie to a very effective at [TS]

00:38:56   feeling like oh god they're never going [TS]

00:38:57   to get out of this they're doing how [TS]

00:38:58   could be how could be out with you know [TS]

00:39:00   this is a problem and yet i do love [TS]

00:39:02   Legos i'm only see you know i love that [TS]

00:39:04   moment you know what he's getting ready [TS]

00:39:05   to go back in time and he's like I just [TS]

00:39:06   wish i could if only i could get to doc [TS]

00:39:09   sooner waiting icon as much time as i [TS]

00:39:11   need i'm in a time machine like there's [TS]

00:39:13   a great moment where he thinks he can [TS]

00:39:14   save his friend right and then he and [TS]

00:39:17   then it seems like you fail fails right [TS]

00:39:19   but he doesn't but and the whole movie [TS]

00:39:21   keeps paying itself like you mentioned [TS]

00:39:23   the dander the one [TS]

00:39:24   the lone pine marten Twin Pines mall but [TS]

00:39:26   you know you have that early on seeing [TS]

00:39:28   that seems like a total throwaway save [TS]

00:39:30   the clock tower save the clock tower we [TS]

00:39:31   add you know exact position comes on and [TS]

00:39:34   explains it's the good lady's right yeah [TS]

00:39:36   but she comes to explain to me exactly [TS]

00:39:37   when the clock tower stopped inhalation [TS]

00:39:39   and soon added pages and that's the way [TS]

00:39:41   its worldwide says which I use all the [TS]

00:39:43   time it seemed extraneous at the time [TS]

00:39:46   yeah well not the whole movie ever i [TS]

00:39:48   mean that was part of the beauty of [TS]

00:39:49   these the whole series was it references [TS]

00:39:52   itself and it references pop culture in [TS]

00:39:55   ways that you don't expect a lot of time [TS]

00:39:56   doing catch until the second or third [TS]

00:39:58   time you watch it and and that was mean [TS]

00:40:00   you can watch it today and still get [TS]

00:40:02   stuff out of it you might not have [TS]

00:40:03   gotten out of it when you first watched [TS]

00:40:04   it and i'm at a moment of appreciation [TS]

00:40:06   for michael j fox who is a big reason [TS]

00:40:08   why the energy is working and it's [TS]

00:40:10   amazing because he wasn't cashed in the [TS]

00:40:11   right it was every soul and everything [TS]

00:40:14   like ask the movie right [TS]

00:40:15   yeah it really kind of unprecedented [TS]

00:40:17   where one large for they looked at the [TS]

00:40:19   dailies and basically said he's not for [TS]

00:40:21   Eric Stoltz who is a good actor and has [TS]

00:40:24   been in lots of good stuff but just was [TS]

00:40:25   not was not the right and they went to [TS]

00:40:28   michael j fox who is known only for [TS]

00:40:29   being in family ties right and he's [TS]

00:40:32   banned and he was doing it all [TS]

00:40:35   i partially with his drinking and drug [TS]

00:40:37   problem yeah but doing he would work [TS]

00:40:39   family ties all day or all week and then [TS]

00:40:41   fly without any sleep to you know I [TS]

00:40:43   don't was flying or driving but go to [TS]

00:40:44   the separate back to the I think it was [TS]

00:40:45   your night but yeah anybody he literally [TS]

00:40:48   you know when you read his memoir a [TS]

00:40:49   lucky guy something like that looking [TS]

00:40:52   man but he was doing it all on no sleep [TS]

00:40:55   and he would have no sleep and he would [TS]

00:40:56   shoot all weekend long and have like [TS]

00:40:58   four hours and then go back to the [TS]

00:40:59   family time so yeah yeah i was gonna [TS]

00:41:00   bring it up and then I can't that there [TS]

00:41:02   are very few movies i think where you [TS]

00:41:05   look at the movie you say I can't [TS]

00:41:06   imagine anyone else in that role and [TS]

00:41:09   they're just from them up michael j fox [TS]

00:41:11   is personality the way he acted in this [TS]

00:41:14   movie that is just quintessential Marty [TS]

00:41:16   McFly's that's the funny thing about [TS]

00:41:18   their adult stuff is that of all the [TS]

00:41:20   movie and I would never have imagined [TS]

00:41:22   this is the movie where I was another [TS]

00:41:23   guy who shot a photo my you know Michael [TS]

00:41:26   J Fox is said in interviews that he saw [TS]

00:41:27   them scouting for back to the future and [TS]

00:41:29   heard the Spielberg's mechanism of the [TS]

00:41:30   general story line was while he was [TS]

00:41:32   filming teen wolf and he was saying god [TS]

00:41:34   I wish that the family ties producers [TS]

00:41:36   would let me out you know allow [TS]

00:41:37   me to film this this back-to-the-future [TS]

00:41:39   movie instead of having me being a movie [TS]

00:41:41   about being half-man half-wolf when we [TS]

00:41:44   and we said earlier that you know part [TS]

00:41:46   of the reason that movie works is it [TS]

00:41:47   doesn't take itself so seriously and i [TS]

00:41:49   think a huge part of that is michael j [TS]

00:41:51   fox is comedic personality which is [TS]

00:41:54   where you came from right eyes right now [TS]

00:41:56   it was perfect for tvs Alex Keaton what [TS]

00:42:00   we do baby without you without love [TS]

00:42:04   without without 1.21 jigowatts zealots [TS]

00:42:09   or 88 miles per hour [TS]

00:42:11   oh man I always wanted to drive [TS]

00:42:13   everything in a team i never tried to [TS]

00:42:15   cast 88 up like i wish i had i wish i [TS]

00:42:17   had a digital speedometer on my car just [TS]

00:42:19   for that my my friend Mike once created [TS]

00:42:22   a fake band based on back to the future [TS]

00:42:24   and I'm sure number one song title which [TS]

00:42:26   is my love for you goes 88 miles per [TS]

00:42:28   hour huh [TS]

00:42:29   it it it's funny I mean I I really view [TS]

00:42:32   this is like almost like this accidental [TS]

00:42:34   it's it's a nap it was a huge hit and [TS]

00:42:38   it's become a huge called success and i [TS]

00:42:40   look at it and you know it's like it's [TS]

00:42:42   not even breaking a sweat [TS]

00:42:43   right i mean it's just it's so unfeeling [TS]

00:42:45   effortless yeah so unassuming the [TS]

00:42:47   special gel good but it's fun it's not [TS]

00:42:49   trying too hard [TS]

00:42:50   80 miles an hour becomes iconic it's not [TS]

00:42:52   like they were trying to push it just [TS]

00:42:53   became a little dangly unbelievable [TS]

00:42:54   right you know like that was just the [TS]

00:42:56   flames maybe even a special effects [TS]

00:42:58   right the flames down the road [TS]

00:43:00   that's just you know putting flammable [TS]

00:43:01   thing on the road and lighting on fire [TS]

00:43:02   and shoot a nominal data in in that shot [TS]

00:43:05   at the end where they there's both [TS]

00:43:07   sitting on the ground the fire goes yeah [TS]

00:43:08   realize it's like it's drawn in and it [TS]

00:43:10   literally Marty's leg is standing in the [TS]

00:43:12   flame [TS]

00:43:12   well it was acceptable accessible sci-fi [TS]

00:43:16   that didn't bill itself as science white [TS]

00:43:18   Hawk Down like Ghostbusters before right [TS]

00:43:20   now that's why those two movies really [TS]

00:43:22   are linked for me and we will do an [TS]

00:43:23   uncomfortable but Ghostbusters some [TS]

00:43:25   point that's one of the other the real [TS]

00:43:26   genius would be in that 12 down so we'll [TS]

00:43:28   move onto Ghostbusters which hopefully [TS]

00:43:30   somebody will not come and beat to death [TS]

00:43:31   John siracusa get it figured if you got [TS]

00:43:34   you got you got the you got the know [TS]

00:43:36   that's why i mentioned this is not here [TS]

00:43:37   to defend him some but but oh those two [TS]

00:43:39   movies showed there is a you know Star [TS]

00:43:42   Wars show that there's a mass audience [TS]

00:43:43   for a sci-fi adventure movie in the [TS]

00:43:45   summer that people didn't realize was [TS]

00:43:47   there [TS]

00:43:47   back to the future and Ghostbuster [TS]

00:43:49   showed that it doesn't have to be [TS]

00:43:51   great it could be funny right you can do [TS]

00:43:53   special effects and funny and in fact [TS]

00:43:55   you put those two things together and [TS]

00:43:56   you can have the biggest grossing movie [TS]

00:43:58   of the year which i believe both of [TS]

00:44:00   those movies were and it and then it [TS]

00:44:02   unfortunately in the rest of the [TS]

00:44:04   eighties you saw a lot of attempts to [TS]

00:44:05   replicate that failed but those two [TS]

00:44:08   don't think they made it was to her [TS]

00:44:10   original stories and I don't think they [TS]

00:44:11   were really you know Star Wars helps to [TS]

00:44:14   be a certain to certain extent but they [TS]

00:44:16   weren't a pic the way Star Wars when [TS]

00:44:17   you're trying to emulate the rounded [TS]

00:44:19   yeah in into the present day and they [TS]

00:44:22   were really recognize you know they want [TS]

00:44:24   everything on there like mannequin you [TS]

00:44:27   know there was there was I think it took [TS]

00:44:28   a big leap of faith especially for [TS]

00:44:30   Ghostbusters for them to say you know [TS]

00:44:31   what we're going to pay for big [TS]

00:44:34   blockbuster special effects for a bill [TS]

00:44:37   murray and Dan Aykroyd completed rifi [TS]

00:44:39   and and likewise to say Steven Spielberg [TS]

00:44:42   is making a sci-fi movie great where do [TS]

00:44:44   I where do I sign up but it's a comedy [TS]

00:44:46   seriously you know [TS]

00:44:48   did you see his previous comedy that [TS]

00:44:50   didn't go over very well I think this is [TS]

00:44:52   it paves the way for movies like men in [TS]

00:44:55   black but we also encourage them because [TS]

00:44:56   it paved the way for movies like wild [TS]

00:44:58   wild west men in black 2 right right but [TS]

00:45:00   I i think i think in balance [TS]

00:45:03   you're much better off yes I'm literally [TS]

00:45:05   with movies that don't take themselves [TS]

00:45:07   too seriously but can be both a [TS]

00:45:09   blockbuster and have a sense of humor [TS]

00:45:10   and I'm dead there are anything and can [TS]

00:45:12   still make you think it's hard to I feel [TS]

00:45:15   and I feel like that's one of things [TS]

00:45:16   that makes it really it's hard to do a [TS]

00:45:17   good movie without at least some humor [TS]

00:45:19   know it's true and you know it all comes [TS]

00:45:21   back to having a strong story and having [TS]

00:45:23   strong characters and no matter what you [TS]

00:45:26   if you if you make something solely [TS]

00:45:28   based off the popularity of you know [TS]

00:45:31   what I inspection yeah exactly [TS]

00:45:33   you're gonna have a lot of nothing I [TS]

00:45:34   mean you'll get the popularity of like [TS]

00:45:36   science fiction and fantasy in today's [TS]

00:45:37   and you look at you know okay let's make [TS]

00:45:39   a movie about vampires right with ya [TS]

00:45:42   yeah I'm awesome you know it was listed [TS]

00:45:44   have been better for the had a couple [TS]

00:45:45   jokes are vampires but that's right [TS]

00:45:48   Jackie man like okay how about this you [TS]

00:45:52   gonna tell the joke [TS]

00:45:54   no yeah Jason could you tell me what [TS]

00:45:57   your favorite not back to the future to [TS]

00:45:59   that so that's a really nice segue [TS]

00:46:01   blacks because I'm going I'm going to [TS]

00:46:03   ask everybody except ran because she [TS]

00:46:06   seems to have already told us [TS]

00:46:08   well I'm or did she just ask right it's [TS]

00:46:11   it's one of its one of the most [TS]

00:46:13   intriguing i'll tell you what when you [TS]

00:46:15   were gonna come back to last you can see [TS]

00:46:17   if you can wrap your brain and come up [TS]

00:46:19   with another another time problem i will [TS]

00:46:21   get started [TS]

00:46:21   thank you Lex usually I wait until the [TS]

00:46:23   end and people like Jason you haven't [TS]

00:46:25   told us what your favorite isn't why [TS]

00:46:27   biding my time waiting to laugh I think [TS]

00:46:29   I've good guess I'm making my way down [TS]

00:46:30   to get our location and almost certainly [TS]

00:46:33   knows what this is because i won't shut [TS]

00:46:34   up about this movie and I've mentioned [TS]

00:46:36   on previous podcast a member on so i'll [TS]

00:46:38   mention it here it is a movie that was [TS]

00:46:41   shot for about twenty-five thousand [TS]

00:46:42   dollars by a guy who's never made a [TS]

00:46:44   movie before he wrote it he directed his [TS]

00:46:46   friends are in it i have watched it like [TS]

00:46:48   five times I it it's confusing as hell [TS]

00:46:53   and yet it is brilliant [TS]

00:46:55   it's by a guy named shane carruth and [TS]

00:46:57   the name of the movie is primer or you [TS]

00:46:59   might call it primer but i believe it's [TS]

00:47:01   called primer that's what i like to call [TS]

00:47:03   it and it is a time travel movie with [TS]

00:47:05   very specific rules and it's about a [TS]

00:47:09   couple of guys who invented a time [TS]

00:47:10   machine and the way the time travel [TS]

00:47:12   works is is you can't travel back want [TS]

00:47:17   except to the point where the [TS]

00:47:19   time-travel machine was turned on so you [TS]

00:47:21   can't go back into the deep past but you [TS]

00:47:23   turn it on and then you go away for a [TS]

00:47:25   while you come back and you can enter [TS]

00:47:28   the box and come and travel backward to [TS]

00:47:31   the point where you turn it on and then [TS]

00:47:33   get back out i was kinda like a save [TS]

00:47:35   point in the game it's it is so what [TS]

00:47:38   ends up happening is the reason you turn [TS]

00:47:39   it on and then leave is because if you [TS]

00:47:40   turn it on and stay you'll watch [TS]

00:47:42   yourself come out of the box so you [TS]

00:47:43   leave and so so you pick this up and you [TS]

00:47:46   see that these and it's very kind of [TS]

00:47:48   obscure and they're talking about how [TS]

00:47:50   they've invented sort of accidentally [TS]

00:47:52   because they're like trying to do a tech [TS]

00:47:54   startup and then [TS]

00:47:55   talking about it in very technical terms [TS]

00:47:57   and you think it's kind of dry and then [TS]

00:47:59   you realize that it's a time machine [TS]

00:48:01   because they they drive they drive to [TS]

00:48:04   their the storage locker where they [TS]

00:48:05   built the time machine and they see them [TS]

00:48:08   and they leave their car and they see [TS]

00:48:09   themselves leaving the storage locker [TS]

00:48:11   it's crazy and over time what you [TS]

00:48:14   realize you're not watching the first [TS]

00:48:16   iteration of this you backed your [TS]

00:48:17   actually you're actually watching [TS]

00:48:19   several iterations in and these guys [TS]

00:48:21   have already had the time machine but [TS]

00:48:23   are now backing tracking over their [TS]

00:48:26   timeline and there's a website where you [TS]

00:48:28   can actually see the entire timeline of [TS]

00:48:30   primer and it's incredibly confusing but [TS]

00:48:33   it's brilliant and there are lots of [TS]

00:48:35   just shocking moments where you realize [TS]

00:48:37   you know those the sounds of the rats [TS]

00:48:39   that are running around in the in the in [TS]

00:48:41   the ceiling of the guys house might not [TS]

00:48:43   be rats there might be like a guy from [TS]

00:48:46   the future up there [TS]

00:48:48   nice uh great stuff so it is confusing [TS]

00:48:51   and yet it is internally consistent and [TS]

00:48:55   i find it [TS]

00:48:56   riveting even though it is this guy's [TS]

00:48:58   only movie and he he did it with like [TS]

00:49:00   kind of his own money and wikipedia says [TS]

00:49:03   7,000 7,000 dollars he wanted he wanted [TS]

00:49:05   maybe it's the $25,000 that maybe the [TS]

00:49:07   prize he won because he wanted to film [TS]

00:49:09   festival and the feeling is gross [TS]

00:49:10   424,000 yeah and he and he and he will [TS]

00:49:14   let himself he actually liked invested [TS]

00:49:16   in in like lighting rigs that he built [TS]

00:49:18   himself in order to light it properly [TS]

00:49:20   it's crazy but that said it it's a good [TS]

00:49:23   movie it's very confusing and yet it is [TS]

00:49:26   it is brilliant and and kind of pure in [TS]

00:49:29   its vision of time travel so so for me [TS]

00:49:31   the number woman time travel movie is is [TS]

00:49:34   primer and I have a second that i'll [TS]

00:49:36   save to the end for it because i don't [TS]

00:49:40   want to steal it in case somebody will [TS]

00:49:42   come back to be damn more and how about [TS]

00:49:43   you gotta go with Bill and Ted's [TS]

00:49:45   Excellent sorry gotta get I was gonna be [TS]

00:49:48   fantastic and has my favorite time [TS]

00:49:50   travel scene ever which is after I think [TS]

00:49:54   they're trying to get was it someone out [TS]

00:49:56   there trying to get someone out of jail [TS]

00:49:57   and so they need the keys and they say [TS]

00:50:01   oh we've got the time machine right so [TS]

00:50:04   like what if after this is all over we [TS]

00:50:05   go back in time get the keys and leaving [TS]

00:50:07   behind the sign here and there water [TS]

00:50:09   around behind right behind right nothing [TS]

00:50:10   goes whoa i love it because it's going [TS]

00:50:13   to be perfect like yeah as long as they [TS]

00:50:15   remember to do that that that will [TS]

00:50:16   perfectly work [TS]

00:50:18   yeah um and I think it's you know it's [TS]

00:50:20   again another comedy movie this much [TS]

00:50:21   what a lot more community i would argue [TS]

00:50:23   oh yeah that back to the future but [TS]

00:50:25   still a fairly pretty you know a pretty [TS]

00:50:28   good movie just you know for the [TS]

00:50:30   presence of among others George Carlin [TS]

00:50:32   it's a great has an awesome movie part [TS]

00:50:34   it was just very entertaining it's very [TS]

00:50:36   it's a very strange movie but it i love [TS]

00:50:39   all the time travel parts [TS]

00:50:40   it's all good it's good natured to write [TS]

00:50:42   it so easy go i love the scenes where [TS]

00:50:44   they have to talk to themselves and like [TS]

00:50:46   convinced themselves that actually like [TS]

00:50:48   they're actually themselves from that [TS]

00:50:49   you jerk right and it's just it's [TS]

00:50:51   extremely well-written there are some [TS]

00:50:53   great strange things are afoot at the [TS]

00:50:55   Circle K this 13 lines in there and and [TS]

00:50:59   just man I and it's got the doctor who [TS]

00:51:02   inspired phone but yes the phone which [TS]

00:51:04   is going home and I tried for so that [TS]

00:51:05   the road as I recall you it's dial the [TS]

00:51:08   year you wanted to go back to and then [TS]

00:51:09   press the pound and star Keys [TS]

00:51:11   simultaneously I tried that in every day [TS]

00:51:14   I'm program that's good for like ya know [TS]

00:51:16   I would probably still do that but it's [TS]

00:51:19   just a fantastic and they they pick up [TS]

00:51:21   all these guys you know all the [TS]

00:51:23   historical figures Abraham Lincoln and [TS]

00:51:25   so great sand sea Rises everything is [TS]

00:51:27   right it's just such a it's such a fun [TS]

00:51:30   dapoli and you know [TS]

00:51:31   so in your summation Napoleon was a [TS]

00:51:34   short dead dude [TS]

00:51:36   right right although my favorite my [TS]

00:51:39   favorite bill intense scene is in the [TS]

00:51:40   sequel where the sequels that when they [TS]

00:51:42   play twister with in and battleship with [TS]

00:51:44   death and with death and the death is [TS]

00:51:46   talking about bizarre Cutcliffe of [TS]

00:51:48   collapse of of like highbrow and lowbrow [TS]

00:51:50   its death from like a more Bergman plane [TS]

00:51:54   advise william sadler a quiz a bad guy [TS]

00:51:57   from diehards who is crazy [TS]

00:52:00   so it's like this Bergman asked daddy to [TS]

00:52:02   play we return battleship with Bill and [TS]

00:52:04   Ted it is eight you notice journey [TS]

00:52:06   underrated but i think a a surprisingly [TS]

00:52:08   good sequel you know the original title [TS]

00:52:10   of that was Bill and Ted go to hell [TS]

00:52:11   which actually papers the bogus morning [TS]

00:52:14   is awesome and they are in fact now [TS]

00:52:15   talking about doing a third floor [TS]

00:52:17   really doing a third one with them at [TS]

00:52:19   you know returning counter reason Alex [TS]

00:52:21   winters and having them play the [TS]

00:52:23   characters at the age they would be now [TS]

00:52:25   and someone we had a conversation with [TS]

00:52:27   this was while he and George Carlin's [TS]

00:52:29   gone what do you do and my friend lost [TS]

00:52:31   weight but you know it's reversed he'll [TS]

00:52:33   be young because he was told in the [TS]

00:52:36   original movie so you can just recast [TS]

00:52:38   the part because you know he's supposed [TS]

00:52:39   to be a lot younger we can go back over [TS]

00:52:41   the footage and and meet themselves in [TS]

00:52:43   the past it's a very you know one of [TS]

00:52:45   those movies that is kinda question is [TS]

00:52:47   is it is it late eighties early nineties [TS]

00:52:48   i'm not sure which one when it was made [TS]

00:52:51   but it's it feels it's ladylike in 89 [TS]

00:52:55   and I feel like it does have that sort [TS]

00:52:57   of eighties movie vibe to it like it's [TS]

00:52:59   kind of weird right these guys make a [TS]

00:53:01   band that's gonna supposedly like save [TS]

00:53:03   the world someday or something it's [TS]

00:53:05   strange but I a double line [TS]

00:53:07   yeah the light whole move it's a good [TS]

00:53:09   one too late for movie ten francs where [TS]

00:53:11   value I stole it sorry didn't know that [TS]

00:53:12   was that was when I concur with damn you [TS]

00:53:14   know in terms of entertainment value [TS]

00:53:15   that is good in an injustice groundhog [TS]

00:53:18   day contest i'm tellin ya sure that [TS]

00:53:21   somebody is a little some point at some [TS]

00:53:24   point we're probably gonna do a whole [TS]

00:53:26   podcast about island a love to yeah [TS]

00:53:28   which-which i would argue is one of that [TS]

00:53:30   actually probably one of the best movies [TS]

00:53:31   ever made [TS]

00:53:32   I don't think is required my wife cannot [TS]

00:53:34   stand it and I'm I'm like are you crazy [TS]

00:53:36   this is one of the best movies [TS]

00:53:38   my mother loves i love it one of my [TS]

00:53:40   really think it is one of the best [TS]

00:53:42   series with all seriousness share with [TS]

00:53:44   you yes one of the best movies ever made [TS]

00:53:46   yeah and at one because it's got all [TS]

00:53:48   these levels it's funny [TS]

00:53:49   yeah its dramatic and yet it actually [TS]

00:53:51   says something about like the meaning of [TS]

00:53:52   life which is a kind of amazing for a [TS]

00:53:55   wacky comedy [TS]

00:53:57   well let me default don't Drive Angry [TS]

00:53:58   regard to drive regular I'm going to [TS]

00:54:01   defer to attract no longer just to lex [TS]

00:54:04   and we can continue talking about a [TS]

00:54:06   little bit i'll pick something well be [TS]

00:54:07   but feel free if you if you want to if i [TS]

00:54:09   miss points you add them on the here's [TS]

00:54:11   the reasons that I love and you just [TS]

00:54:12   reference one of them days ago but when [TS]

00:54:14   you think about groundhog day I think [TS]

00:54:16   that the the journey Bill Murray takes [TS]

00:54:18   that movie makes a lot of sense like at [TS]

00:54:20   first you would be insane you write [TS]

00:54:21   livid right furious and unhappy but then [TS]

00:54:24   he decides I'm is perfect at that point [TS]

00:54:26   yes it's like I'm gonna have [TS]

00:54:28   to his character deciding i have to do [TS]

00:54:30   something with this but let's not forget [TS]

00:54:32   where these like suicidal for ya after [TS]

00:54:34   day I could see every day that he [TS]

00:54:36   suicide like sure it's a bit it's like [TS]

00:54:38   almost a Buddhist monastery where he [TS]

00:54:40   gets he gets past besides all i can do [TS]

00:54:41   here is perfect myself because you get [TS]

00:54:44   the assumption that he's been there for [TS]

00:54:45   like a thousand years [TS]

00:54:46   yes but to me but first I mean initially [TS]

00:54:48   his point is how can I get you know [TS]

00:54:50   Andie McDowell with poor choice but how [TS]

00:54:52   can i get a big telephone lan the movies [TS]

00:54:54   yeah but a and that's his first goals [TS]

00:54:58   and you know very selfish in that rain [TS]

00:54:59   but you know [TS]

00:55:00   yes you just mentioned thousands of [TS]

00:55:02   years ago Harold Ramos said that he [TS]

00:55:04   thinks it's got to be at least 30 or 40 [TS]

00:55:06   years and if you can think about that [TS]

00:55:07   and really where I have to say my [TS]

00:55:09   40-year he's doing that day over and [TS]

00:55:11   over again read every book in the [TS]

00:55:13   library learn to be an ice sculpture [TS]

00:55:14   learn to be a masterpiece in there some [TS]

00:55:16   logical flaws the movie like how does he [TS]

00:55:18   keep going to the piano teacher and [TS]

00:55:19   saying I need to learn how to play piano [TS]

00:55:20   but he goes in at some point he's become [TS]

00:55:22   not just a beginner the panel but [TS]

00:55:23   accomplished and they're not just to [TS]

00:55:24   college with super like somebody gets a [TS]

00:55:26   little bit complicated why doesn't [TS]

00:55:27   anybody work it out but I mean gogo [TS]

00:55:29   different levels of different piano [TS]

00:55:31   teachers and maybe it's to me you know [TS]

00:55:35   there's was magically knows everybody [TS]

00:55:37   knows they're all other stories and [TS]

00:55:39   everything there is I don't have that [TS]

00:55:40   world but eventually he even become so [TS]

00:55:42   good that it's not just what do I have [TS]

00:55:44   to do you know what's the right toast to [TS]

00:55:46   make one we're going to have champagne [TS]

00:55:47   and you know what's the what's the right [TS]

00:55:48   jokes to make dynamic Dallas cetera but [TS]

00:55:50   he decides I'm not just gonna do those [TS]

00:55:52   things but I'm gonna save i'm going to [TS]

00:55:54   better some other people's life I don't [TS]

00:55:56   affect me selfishly I gonna attach to [TS]

00:55:58   get something out of the tree [TS]

00:55:59   I'm in it even though they could never [TS]

00:56:01   happen she says thank you [TS]

00:56:03   you know it is it it's like that to me [TS]

00:56:05   is the part that's really interesting [TS]

00:56:07   knows he's not here he know it has 40 [TS]

00:56:10   years to get its all his selfish selfish [TS]

00:56:13   impulses outright and presumably he [TS]

00:56:15   slept with every woman that is he's [TS]

00:56:17   capable of sleeping within the town and [TS]

00:56:19   and that finds that wanting because [TS]

00:56:21   there's never any trace of it the next [TS]

00:56:23   time and he has to do it all again he [TS]

00:56:25   just exhaust everything that he could do [TS]

00:56:27   and there's nothing left to do but [TS]

00:56:29   perfect himself and I like to believe [TS]

00:56:31   that every once in awhile even as he's [TS]

00:56:33   on this no spiritual journey to self [TS]

00:56:35   betterment that every once in awhile you [TS]

00:56:37   wake up and you just not feeling it [TS]

00:56:38   takes fans and you know he killed [TS]

00:56:40   himself in some gratifying [TS]

00:56:41   exciting ways that building stay in bed [TS]

00:56:44   right now but eventually he's got a [TS]

00:56:46   schedule so he says okay [TS]

00:56:47   the cats falling at this time the guy in [TS]

00:56:49   the alley is getting you know I need [TS]

00:56:51   food [TS]

00:56:52   the guy in the restaurants choking on a [TS]

00:56:53   stick ok I've got to be here that's [TS]

00:56:55   right he creates the perfect day right [TS]

00:56:57   and that's what gets him out of it and [TS]

00:56:59   you're right but I mean greater always [TS]

00:57:01   my favorite story about the movie [TS]

00:57:03   Groundhog Day is my my sister used to [TS]

00:57:06   live in Israel [TS]

00:57:07   yeah and she and her Israeli husband [TS]

00:57:09   moved to the United States or maybe they [TS]

00:57:11   were just visiting that beer is my home [TS]

00:57:12   they had never seen the film had been [TS]

00:57:13   out for years but they had never seen [TS]

00:57:15   the film so I can't believe that there's [TS]

00:57:17   nobody there are people who have never [TS]

00:57:18   seen this girl is years ago this was [TS]

00:57:20   years ago but now now there wouldn't be [TS]

00:57:22   anyone [TS]

00:57:23   exactly but something is we would have [TS]

00:57:24   had to fire off the spoiler horn if that [TS]

00:57:26   were the case there's they're sitting in [TS]

00:57:27   the in my family room in my old house in [TS]

00:57:29   pennsylvania and we're watching them on [TS]

00:57:30   a video we're watching a movie on video [TS]

00:57:32   but their jet lag from having flown from [TS]

00:57:34   israel so every time we fall asleep i'll [TS]

00:57:36   just remind me the way the top faster [TS]

00:57:40   than my sister eventually she becomes [TS]

00:57:42   this was my is this movie's success only [TS]

00:57:44   to show the same scenes again and again [TS]

00:57:46   like I don't know people seem to like it [TS]

00:57:47   and she follows me because it's what I [TS]

00:57:49   just keep seeing the same see you [TS]

00:57:51   basically gave me 180 the ring groundhog [TS]

00:57:53   that's fascinating sociological [TS]

00:57:55   experiment so so he hasn't spoken to be [TS]

00:57:57   soon as we've been sitting here I've [TS]

00:57:59   noticed ran sliding further and further [TS]

00:58:01   down her seat and the answer is we [TS]

00:58:03   didn't fire off the spoiler hard for her [TS]

00:58:05   and she has not seen you never saw [TS]

00:58:07   ground i have never seen the movie [TS]

00:58:09   how is that possible and i haven't seen [TS]

00:58:12   home alone so that you know yeah there [TS]

00:58:14   you go [TS]

00:58:14   well can I don't see Ferris Bueller I'm [TS]

00:58:16   gonna last year ever so like Ted's [TS]

00:58:17   Excellent Adventure did you sit really [TS]

00:58:19   still haven't seen villain what has [TS]

00:58:22   nobody seen primers five bodies and yeah [TS]

00:58:24   thank you seem like you've never heard [TS]

00:58:26   of I'm sorry rescue last last year on [TS]

00:58:29   blu-ray actually yeah it was good have [TS]

00:58:31   you discussed that movie Leah we have we [TS]

00:58:32   have not although that was that was I [TS]

00:58:34   think one of the points about about real [TS]

00:58:35   genius as I was saying that I can give a [TS]

00:58:38   read on the people who love Ferris [TS]

00:58:40   Bueller that as somebody who had never [TS]

00:58:41   seen it and has no nostalgia toward it [TS]

00:58:44   it's a pretty good movie and I have the [TS]

00:58:45   style shorten think it's a great move it [TS]

00:58:47   over there waiting and idly would you [TS]

00:58:49   think you know I religion [TS]

00:58:50   oh yeah at the time and yes almost cries [TS]

00:58:52   it was like it was ok [TS]

00:58:53   we're very hard and was for Groundhog [TS]

00:58:55   Day was shot by the way yeah listen [TS]

00:58:57   woodstock gonna write exactly do you [TS]

00:58:58   have another time travel movie well I [TS]

00:59:00   stole yours since you both stole my [TS]

00:59:02   first two traces I'm really high school [TS]

00:59:04   well I think your time travel movie and [TS]

00:59:06   dress that's your sister with the third [TS]

00:59:08   round and time travel movie drives the [TS]

00:59:10   new york next select I you know I did [TS]

00:59:15   there's the the third and fourth one are [TS]

00:59:17   probably wins art what's it [TS]

00:59:19   I said the lake outside always gonna be [TS]

00:59:20   no no IIM we're in time someone I would [TS]

00:59:23   have made to see that movie i have fond [TS]

00:59:25   memories of Time Bandit I hear you got [TS]

00:59:28   into it because I was like 11 years old [TS]

00:59:31   when it came out and I I don't know how [TS]

00:59:33   I got to see it in theaters but I did [TS]

00:59:35   and I was blown away i had an 11-year [TS]

00:59:37   I've never seen time never seen this is [TS]

00:59:39   it up i'm seeing a large everybody this [TS]

00:59:42   is probably all of it but but not in [TS]

00:59:43   years [TS]

00:59:44   however the movie freaking me out yeah I [TS]

00:59:46   was 11 years old I saw my parents my [TS]

00:59:48   parents of course you are not sci-fi [TS]

00:59:50   people were like that was the worst [TS]

00:59:52   movie I've ever seen not and I was just [TS]

00:59:54   like wow that is amazing i didn't get [TS]

00:59:57   half of it but it was still amazing [TS]

00:59:59   right [TS]

00:59:59   and [TS]

00:59:59   and [TS]

01:00:00   and so I'm one of these days I want to [TS]

01:00:01   go back and watch it again because it's [TS]

01:00:02   probably been a good 15 20 years since [TS]

01:00:04   I've seen it on a more recent note i [TS]

01:00:07   would also have to i really like 12 [TS]

01:00:09   monkeys [TS]

01:00:10   ah well night i see yeah that was my is [TS]

01:00:13   being interrogated that was my reserve [TS]

01:00:15   pic that i was going to come back to 12 [TS]

01:00:16   monkeys in my mind is is philosophically [TS]

01:00:18   the perfect time travel yet because it [TS]

01:00:20   it because it holds to the belief that [TS]

01:00:25   what happened happened and that [TS]

01:00:27   everything that happens is an attempt to [TS]

01:00:28   change the past and yet it creates the [TS]

01:00:30   past and that there's no way to change [TS]

01:00:31   it and although that's kind of [TS]

01:00:33   crushingly depressing in one way and [TS]

01:00:35   that's a very dark depressing movie it's [TS]

01:00:37   also kind of brilliant and I i love that [TS]

01:00:40   movie a half agree with you because i [TS]

01:00:42   think that the way the 12 monkeys treats [TS]

01:00:44   time travel is exactly spot-on I think [TS]

01:00:46   the movie itself is a bit ham-fisted and [TS]

01:00:48   how it tells that story so I wouldn't [TS]

01:00:50   put it I i love its handling time travel [TS]

01:00:52   but i really don't love it's a excellent [TS]

01:00:54   does the ending bother you because the [TS]

01:00:57   end the ending bothers me and that it's [TS]

01:00:58   it's it's it's pretty Telegraph yes my [TS]

01:01:01   lord and it was although dan it came out [TS]

01:01:04   like 20 years ago LOL i know i just felt [TS]

01:01:07   through the crap yeah I do you want to [TS]

01:01:08   flip out there by the way speaking of [TS]

01:01:09   little time together well I i really [TS]

01:01:12   found not the movie so much but i think [TS]

01:01:15   it was an impossible movie to try to [TS]

01:01:16   make but i think that the book that uh I [TS]

01:01:18   don't have pronounce your last name so i [TS]

01:01:19   won't try but the time traveler's wife I [TS]

01:01:20   think reordering handles vinegar [TS]

01:01:23   look I like you to say i like my book I [TS]

01:01:26   didn't really love the movie i thought [TS]

01:01:28   it was ok with the blood really handles [TS]

01:01:30   time is fantastic so fantastic a [TS]

01:01:32   narrative John my favorite incredible [TS]

01:01:34   how do you let me just that the [TS]

01:01:35   architecture of the book itself to [TS]

01:01:36   figure out the time when the whole story [TS]

01:01:37   is Billy if you haven't read the time [TS]

01:01:39   traveler's wife go so good if you Flight [TS]

01:01:42   if you've liked i'll also say if you [TS]

01:01:43   liked any of the work that Steven Moffat [TS]

01:01:45   has done for doctor who read the time [TS]

01:01:48   traveler's wife because even steven [TS]

01:01:49   moffat will say it was the inspiration [TS]

01:01:51   for a lot of his time travel based kind [TS]

01:01:54   of character romance stories that he's [TS]

01:01:56   told and held again and told again and [TS]

01:01:58   and it's great i i i love that book me [TS]

01:02:02   to so many different ways especially [TS]

01:02:03   because we can make away and that that's [TS]

01:02:06   great that's great well they meet any [TS]

01:02:08   meat right it's the only time you can [TS]

01:02:09   tell a relationship like that where [TS]

01:02:11   we're two people meet and one of them [TS]

01:02:13   knows [TS]

01:02:13   everything about the other one and the [TS]

01:02:14   other ones never met the first one right [TS]

01:02:16   both but because they're both packages [TS]

01:02:18   and dad but I respect to many different [TS]

01:02:20   times [TS]

01:02:20   grace but you know on that now it's not [TS]

01:02:22   technically a time travel movie but [TS]

01:02:24   eternal sunshine has kind of that [TS]

01:02:25   quality to it where that's you're going [TS]

01:02:28   if you don't remember it's like it well [TS]

01:02:31   no but I mean everything that we're [TS]

01:02:33   married mary as as hopped up yeah no I [TS]

01:02:37   will as they're going through memories [TS]

01:02:39   they're going through memories in [TS]

01:02:40   Reverse time and they're going through [TS]

01:02:41   the reverse of relationship some reason [TS]

01:02:43   which is interesting is it is a great me [TS]

01:02:45   and I'm not I'm not I'm kind of [TS]

01:02:47   skeptical with a lot of charlie kaufman [TS]

01:02:49   stuff as i'm on the record as saying [TS]

01:02:50   that I think adaptation is one of the [TS]

01:02:52   worst movies i've ever seen but eternal [TS]

01:02:55   sunshine is a great while you talk a lot [TS]

01:02:57   of that up to michel gondry who I think [TS]

01:02:58   is a really talented director [TS]

01:03:01   Wow story my applied gas boiler war of [TS]

01:03:08   words with friends that was said but the [TS]

01:03:10   one the one that I was surprised that no [TS]

01:03:12   one mentioned that i didn't really even [TS]

01:03:14   remember think of his time travel movie [TS]

01:03:16   until I checked Wikipedia is list of [TS]

01:03:17   time tony was the Terminator franchise [TS]

01:03:19   no I saw that but I can't say it's not [TS]

01:03:22   it's not really is like it's like an [TS]

01:03:24   action movie predicated on it but it's [TS]

01:03:26   not really related travel time travel is [TS]

01:03:29   so bad idea [TS]

01:03:30   terminator don't punch later I I thought [TS]

01:03:33   is actually a good movie i love a red [TS]

01:03:35   the original terminator evo is actually [TS]

01:03:37   doesn't get enough credit for being [TS]

01:03:38   great with the second movie is good and [TS]

01:03:40   second if it were just like 16 times [TS]

01:03:42   don't think he is a chance the first [TS]

01:03:46   movie like like 20 years after it came [TS]

01:03:48   out right now is so sore laughs don't [TS]

01:03:50   know that's true for the second special [TS]

01:03:53   most likely to do not quit but i'm still [TS]

01:03:56   cool for me because you terminate [TS]

01:03:58   actually at the time with [TS]

01:03:59   state-of-the-art is a million original [TS]

01:04:00   terminator at the time was a low-budget [TS]

01:04:02   movie right now so it'll also [TS]

01:04:04   highlighted by a movie but you know I [TS]

01:04:05   don't lot of people who say at the time [TS]

01:04:07   that like the movie the robot at the end [TS]

01:04:08   is still pretty like like cool but like [TS]

01:04:10   you know not from the 20 years [TS]

01:04:12   perspective but at the time they're like [TS]

01:04:13   oh I got an awesome i always like [TS]

01:04:16   Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park movies [TS]

01:04:18   they had mind-blowing effects that just [TS]

01:04:19   do not hold up about Jurassic park's a [TS]

01:04:21   good example of a movie that completely [TS]

01:04:23   changed how we thought of [TS]

01:04:24   special-effects it really made right [TS]

01:04:26   streams like CGI [TS]

01:04:27   and-and-and it's laughable but this is [TS]

01:04:29   what it's like a lot of stuff where the [TS]

01:04:31   first move the first movie or TV show or [TS]

01:04:32   a book or whatever that does something [TS]

01:04:34   if you look at it without thinking of a [TS]

01:04:36   context it's like oh really everybody [TS]

01:04:38   does this now but at the time it was at [TS]

01:04:39   first and now we look back and go well [TS]

01:04:41   those aren't that great but at the time [TS]

01:04:43   yeah it was impressed i don't know i [TS]

01:04:45   mean there had to be that first movie [TS]

01:04:47   that did that and it was jurassic park [TS]

01:04:48   in every movie does that now you have [TS]

01:04:51   the DVD or blu-ray laserdisc up to ask [TS]

01:04:53   park and you have free time on your [TS]

01:04:54   hands which you will do since you just [TS]

01:04:56   listen to this podcast that you should [TS]

01:04:58   go watch the final scene in jurassic [TS]

01:04:59   park where I'm the t-rex has the [TS]

01:05:01   Velociraptor his mouth is in the museum [TS]

01:05:03   itself as explains his head around if [TS]

01:05:05   you go frame by frame there's a frame [TS]

01:05:06   where the the Velociraptor completely [TS]

01:05:08   disappears from the t-rex's math and [TS]

01:05:10   somebody w spotted it with your naked [TS]

01:05:12   eye which I find amazing it's because [TS]

01:05:14   they it was negated because they changed [TS]

01:05:16   the timeline actually what the truth is [TS]

01:05:18   the day he disappeared because he was a [TS]

01:05:20   victim of the Velociraptor sure [TS]

01:05:22   well thank you i'm surprised the time [TS]

01:05:25   for time travel movie nobody mentioned [TS]

01:05:27   star trek for which is a fantastic time [TS]

01:05:30   felony it if it's it wasn't bad but it [TS]

01:05:33   wasn't in my head it's a good great good [TS]

01:05:35   move because it and that was the first [TS]

01:05:36   star chick we are actually originally or [TS]

01:05:38   west mesa totally off-kilter campy star [TS]

01:05:42   trek movie that embraces you guys will [TS]

01:05:44   start with you got the double dumbass on [TS]

01:05:45   you you got you got the the the one that [TS]

01:05:48   I love is fine doctor gave me a pill and [TS]

01:05:50   groom me a new kidney where where dr. [TS]

01:05:52   McCoy's in the hospital he's like they [TS]

01:05:54   cut you open my god it's like a Spanish [TS]

01:05:56   Inquisition and it's like our time I [TS]

01:05:58   love spot feeling the feeling of nerve [TS]

01:06:00   pinch to the guy with the boom box on [TS]

01:06:02   the bus and everybody [TS]

01:06:03   the guy was going to go into Britain [TS]

01:06:05   he's got that mohawk [TS]

01:06:06   yeah some night i think i would like it [TS]

01:06:08   more now when i saw at the time I was [TS]

01:06:10   like this is just horrible how it's hot [TS]

01:06:13   it's gonna be hot i think i would [TS]

01:06:16   appreciate living in the bay area though [TS]

01:06:17   now i would be disturbed by the bad [TS]

01:06:19   geography and because they're like [TS]

01:06:20   standing on in the east bay next to the [TS]

01:06:22   paper original like we got to get to [TS]

01:06:23   alameda it's like to hear you right [TS]

01:06:25   there what what what's going on but at [TS]

01:06:28   the time I was like turning left bridges [TS]

01:06:30   I mcintosh kamia computer that was right [TS]

01:06:33   on low to no computer no there that's a [TS]

01:06:37   and that's referenced in the other in [TS]

01:06:39   the JJ Abrams reboot which is a time [TS]

01:06:40   travel movie and well yeah and that's [TS]

01:06:42   reference where they once again where [TS]

01:06:44   this time spot from the future tell [TS]

01:06:46   Scotty you will invent this thing so [TS]

01:06:49   it's like Scotty gets it from both sides [TS]

01:06:51   yeah I can't i mean i thought that the [TS]

01:06:53   JJ Abrams movie was a fun movie but it's [TS]

01:06:55   I find not that it's time travel [TS]

01:06:57   handling is bogus just as much as its [TS]

01:06:59   storytelling is bogus where that he ends [TS]

01:07:00   up at exactly the right size on this [TS]

01:07:02   extreme barren and I've heard their [TS]

01:07:04   justifications for that and I agree that [TS]

01:07:06   bothered me at the time but its [TS]

01:07:07   subsequent rewatching has bothered me [TS]

01:07:09   like that it's not my problem with that [TS]

01:07:11   movie that the i am a big believer in in [TS]

01:07:14   ii you will sell me on something if you [TS]

01:07:16   say you know what in this alternate [TS]

01:07:18   timeline the universe the universe is [TS]

01:07:20   going to course-correct and it's gonna [TS]

01:07:21   push the right people together because [TS]

01:07:22   how after 80 timelines diverged like 20 [TS]

01:07:25   years ago and yet everybody is on the [TS]

01:07:26   bridge of the enterprise is exactly the [TS]

01:07:27   same moment I so I'm willing to accept [TS]

01:07:29   yes they were destined to be together [TS]

01:07:32   my problem with that movie is mostly [TS]

01:07:33   like you Leonard Leonard Nimoy as great [TS]

01:07:35   as he is you know he comes on screen and [TS]

01:07:38   then he has to do the exposition and [TS]

01:07:39   there's that kind of like him scratching [TS]

01:07:41   scene where he kind of mumbles about how [TS]

01:07:44   there's like a black hole that's going [TS]

01:07:46   to destroy the galaxy which doesn't even [TS]

01:07:48   make any sense and then eats a planet [TS]

01:07:50   and he fires the red matter and then [TS]

01:07:53   Nero is angry at him and it just it [TS]

01:07:55   doesn't make any sense you're at and [TS]

01:07:57   i'll as much as I love that movie I [TS]

01:07:58   can't watch that scene because it is so [TS]

01:08:00   nonsensical and I do want to say when [TS]

01:08:02   you pointed out in you know a spark is [TS]

01:08:05   as mr. exposition and maybe think of the [TS]

01:08:06   Austin Powers movies and I think it's [TS]

01:08:08   the second door speaking of time travel [TS]

01:08:09   that's killing us [TS]

01:08:11   it does have a clever way was i who [TS]

01:08:13   shackles right [TS]

01:08:14   yes you know awesome powers of saying [TS]

01:08:15   well you know how do we don't understand [TS]

01:08:17   how this you know the tunnels gonna work [TS]

01:08:19   and how many of me will be into i have a [TS]

01:08:20   bad teeth a good teeth on these and he [TS]

01:08:22   looks right at the camera says don't [TS]

01:08:24   worry about it is a beer that is the way [TS]

01:08:26   that it was a good call it like that way [TS]

01:08:29   later [TS]

01:08:30   yeah right all right I have a new [TS]

01:08:32   favorite okay i don't know i was just [TS]

01:08:34   saying other movies that aren't really [TS]

01:08:36   about time travel that have time travel [TS]

01:08:38   an army of darkness army of darkness is [TS]

01:08:40   a great time traveling that isn't really [TS]

01:08:42   about time for having saved know it's a [TS]

01:08:44   classic and her haven't seen evil dead [TS]

01:08:46   two yet army of darkness I saw first [TS]

01:08:49   that's a army darkest I saw first and I [TS]

01:08:52   slidellla everything then evil dead two [TS]

01:08:54   are conducted well I mean that's a movie [TS]

01:08:57   that's predicated on time travel but [TS]

01:08:58   it's not really but if you got really [TS]

01:09:00   bored today if you say I haven't seen [TS]

01:09:02   evil did to yet does that mean you [TS]

01:09:03   intend to protect to even she was also a [TS]

01:09:06   very good move over by terrible good [TS]

01:09:08   movie but yeah yeah I'm just I'm just [TS]

01:09:10   I'm just doing a high-fidelity don't [TS]

01:09:12   look at this point yeah and and kind of [TS]

01:09:14   a neat the back to the future can't be [TS]

01:09:15   time travel light there's also known as [TS]

01:09:17   peggy sue got married which was a time [TS]

01:09:20   travel movie john carradine is a member [TS]

01:09:21   here one of the greatest bad actors ever [TS]

01:09:24   done guaranteeing that nicolas cage with [TS]

01:09:27   you know for ahead of valley girl hair [TS]

01:09:29   so any other any other time travels you [TS]

01:09:32   want you want to get out or will a [TS]

01:09:33   future version of yourself come back in [TS]

01:09:35   time to this point and blurt the name of [TS]

01:09:37   a great time travel movie from 2020 [TS]

01:09:39   hearing well you better take speaking of [TS]

01:09:40   back in time if you haven't yet seen or [TS]

01:09:43   don't remember the Saturday Night Live [TS]

01:09:45   sketch when Michael J Fox hosted and [TS]

01:09:46   he's in the elevator in a building and [TS]

01:09:49   kevin nealon first walks in and [TS]

01:09:50   recognizes michael j fox and start [TS]

01:09:52   singing go back in time like singing a [TS]

01:09:55   really high-pitched really poorly and [TS]

01:09:56   then I think Dana Carvey comes in and I [TS]

01:09:58   think they're all recognizing my box and [TS]

01:10:00   singing the back in time song again yeah [TS]

01:10:01   that's the if you haven't seen or don't [TS]

01:10:03   remember that video you gotta find it [TS]

01:10:04   i'm confident on online and its really [TS]

01:10:07   really fine [TS]

01:10:07   that's why throw that we have to find it [TS]

01:10:10   show notes that's the power of love em [TS]

01:10:13   don't take money where man don't take [TS]

01:10:15   Fame you don't need no credit card to [TS]

01:10:17   ride this train goes the Train only [TS]

01:10:18   takes care what he says to ride this [TS]

01:10:20   train to see you think that he saw the [TS]

01:10:22   future and knew that in third movie they [TS]

01:10:24   were going to use a travel huey lewis is [TS]

01:10:25   actually a time travel [TS]

01:10:27   you actually want me so much you know [TS]

01:10:28   what he actually time traveler [TS]

01:10:30   yes except for the baseline which was [TS]

01:10:32   written by Ray Parker jr. sadly sadly [TS]

01:10:35   the NewsHour curse at times you know [TS]

01:10:38   open left behind in that that's why they [TS]

01:10:40   really were behind right yeah and [TS]

01:10:42   they're only exists in the present but [TS]

01:10:44   he Lewis is is is at all times and space [TS]

01:10:47   and simultaneous knowing some of the [TS]

01:10:48   affection that people have in this room [TS]

01:10:50   for the series i will say that i did not [TS]

01:10:52   approve of how the television series [TS]

01:10:54   lost in your strap ideally i enjoyed [TS]

01:10:58   enjoyed their time travel section enjoy [TS]

01:11:00   parts that i enjoyed this year's long as [TS]

01:11:02   I didn't try thinking too hard about the [TS]

01:11:03   time you agree with the great thing [TS]

01:11:05   about watch the great thing about lost [TS]

01:11:07   going to the seventies with the dharma [TS]

01:11:09   initiative was because they got to do [TS]

01:11:10   lots of funny stuff and I I think that's [TS]

01:11:13   why they did it right is that they like [TS]

01:11:14   well this is such a right period for us [TS]

01:11:16   to talk about and you got to have Sawyer [TS]

01:11:19   in his full on like Rockford Files mode [TS]

01:11:22   and that this is sheriff of the dharma [TS]

01:11:24   initiative and that was great but it [TS]

01:11:25   didn't for comedy with the ultimate [TS]

01:11:26   because they were lousy storytellers so [TS]

01:11:28   i think it was fine and there was [TS]

01:11:29   something i think there was some [TS]

01:11:30   desperation there as well and would have [TS]

01:11:32   all worked except that maybe they [TS]

01:11:33   weren't for those meddling kids in the [TS]

01:11:34   end it in the end it didn't pay off [TS]

01:11:36   right and that stupid dog and it didn't [TS]

01:11:39   make any sense that son did not get some [TS]

01:11:41   back of the past with the present no no [TS]

01:11:42   no I will defend the series but not on [TS]

01:11:45   this podcast yes maybe another another [TS]

01:11:48   time I don't under [TS]

01:11:49   it's too bad you don't have a podcast [TS]

01:11:50   that could use to talk about this about [TS]

01:11:52   this thing it will will file it away [TS]

01:11:54   we'll send it into a time capsule and [TS]

01:11:56   put it in the future when we will [TS]

01:11:57   discuss it at another time when we're [TS]

01:11:59   back in time to the future you know [TS]

01:12:03   anyway I'm us before before we go [TS]

01:12:05   because we're about out of time out of [TS]

01:12:07   time in fact a license plate on which at [TS]

01:12:09   one which has one letter more than is it [TS]

01:12:12   has eight letters and you can only get [TS]

01:12:13   seven letters on the custom license [TS]

01:12:14   plate in california which is how and the [TS]

01:12:17   only reason I know that is that I always [TS]

01:12:18   know that it's one too many out we're [TS]

01:12:21   talking to my kids about about back to [TS]

01:12:23   the future and I and my my son said that [TS]

01:12:27   doesn't make back to the future doesn't [TS]

01:12:29   make any sense [TS]

01:12:30   and I said well that's the point is that [TS]

01:12:32   there in the past and then I have to get [TS]

01:12:33   back to the future is known [TS]

01:12:36   really have to get back to their present [TS]

01:12:38   i guess so i guess i'll get more you [TS]

01:12:39   gotta go back to the future the future [TS]

01:12:44   alright man i think that by one semester [TS]

01:12:46   a score of that theme [TS]

01:12:48   oh yeah great movie music charges from [TS]
