00:00:00   if you're listening to this at all not [TS]

00:00:01   if you're listening is in the car if [TS]

00:00:03   your listeners at home get like I've got [TS]

00:00:05   a bottle whiskey or something hard like [TS]

00:00:07   it in the cupboard get a glass every [TS]

00:00:09   time we spontaneously can't stop from [TS]

00:00:11   quoting the movie you take a shot the [TS]

00:00:14   income per little contest episode 100 mm [TS]

00:00:18   october twenty plan [TS]

00:00:22   welcome back to the incomparable podcast [TS]

00:00:24   I'm your host Jason Snell and our topic [TS]

00:00:27   in this episode is gonna be one of my [TS]

00:00:29   favorite comedies of all time i picked [TS]

00:00:31   in our movie draft a few months ago you [TS]

00:00:36   might ask the question if you've got [TS]

00:00:39   episode 110 where can you go from there [TS]

00:00:42   and the answer is you can go that extra [TS]

00:00:45   little bit to go off the cliff just turn [TS]

00:00:48   it up a little bit more and you have [TS]

00:00:49   episode 111 and we go to 11 now to talk [TS]

00:00:55   about this is spinal tap the fine [TS]

00:00:58   mockumentary directed by rob reiner from [TS]

00:01:03   1983 i believe and here to join with me [TS]

00:01:07   in discussing this fine piece of work [TS]

00:01:09   are and Enoch oh hi Andy this is mark [TS]

00:01:13   number one this is mark number bond is [TS]

00:01:14   this little fun that's right i went [TS]

00:01:17   obvious hydrate so if I'm Nigel you can [TS]

00:01:19   be my David st. Hubbins and that makes [TS]

00:01:21   ben boychuk our very own harry shearer [TS]

00:01:25   or would you prefer to be Vince average [TS]

00:01:29   the keyboard player now I want to be the [TS]

00:01:32   lukewarm water was created for [TS]

00:01:34   elaboration good that's good enough that [TS]

00:01:37   i should pause recording so you can go [TS]

00:01:39   off and get a cucumber and wrapping up [TS]

00:01:41   for I would not use to do that I i [TS]

00:01:43   already did it's a zucchini is not yeah [TS]

00:01:47   because a cucumber would be bumpy and [TS]

00:01:49   suggest a level of disease that a [TS]

00:01:52   zucchini does not [TS]

00:01:53   well you think that we can get a good [TS]

00:01:55   idea of having a cucumber down there [TS]

00:01:56   especially with the heat moisture is [TS]

00:01:57   that you wind up with a pickle later on [TS]

00:01:59   fair enough because as you know the [TS]

00:02:03   catering is just this is just a shambles [TS]

00:02:05   you kno oh man there's so much you know [TS]

00:02:07   it one of the amazing things about this [TS]

00:02:09   movie is that this is a [TS]

00:02:11   this movie was made before Rob Reiner [TS]

00:02:14   made the princess bride but in those two [TS]

00:02:19   movies and we've covered the princess [TS]

00:02:21   bride on a previous podcast as well [TS]

00:02:23   two of the most quotable and quoted and [TS]

00:02:27   referenced movies of all time and when i [TS]

00:02:30   watched this is spinal tap back for this [TS]

00:02:33   podcast i was shocked at just how many [TS]

00:02:36   references I here on a regular basis and [TS]

00:02:39   make on a far too regular basis to this [TS]

00:02:42   is spinal tap [TS]

00:02:43   so I you know I would like to sort of [TS]

00:02:46   just walk through it and and talk about [TS]

00:02:48   it as we do when we talk about different [TS]

00:02:50   movies so this is spinal tap [TS]

00:02:53   we're introduced to it by Marty Bergey [TS]

00:02:55   played by Rob Reiner fine but [TS]

00:02:58   documentary filmmaker who is walking as [TS]

00:03:01   he introduces the movie to us he's [TS]

00:03:02   walking through the most complicated and [TS]

00:03:05   nonsensical movie set up ever [TS]

00:03:07   it's got every piece of movie equipment [TS]

00:03:09   known to man lighting some unknown seen [TS]

00:03:12   there at one point is my favorite there [TS]

00:03:14   are there is a series of ladders that [TS]

00:03:17   are set up in order as to as if to [TS]

00:03:19   create I don't even know what a [TS]

00:03:21   pyramidal ladders and and from that we [TS]

00:03:25   get the sense that this turns out sort [TS]

00:03:28   of hack director has had stumbled upon a [TS]

00:03:31   story in the life of this this this rock [TS]

00:03:35   band spinal tab and I had since we're [TS]

00:03:39   talking about Marty Bergey because he he [TS]

00:03:42   kicks this movie off the story is that [TS]

00:03:44   people thought this movie was real which [TS]

00:03:46   completely blows me away because as i [TS]

00:03:49   watched the first 10 minutes of what I [TS]

00:03:50   thought I other than the hot and heavy [TS]

00:03:53   metal fans that they interview at the [TS]

00:03:54   beginning it is so clearly not [TS]

00:03:57   I i guess i guess you know I think the [TS]

00:04:00   thing that sells this movie as as being [TS]

00:04:02   real is the that are the songs that and [TS]

00:04:05   the performance of the other songs [TS]

00:04:07   because those are real and the songs [TS]

00:04:09   were you know they're originals and [TS]

00:04:12   they're the sorts of songs maybe that [TS]

00:04:13   you would get from a band like this and [TS]

00:04:15   the that the actors are performing those [TS]

00:04:17   songs for real and I guess that goes a [TS]

00:04:19   long way because of a lot of the rest of [TS]

00:04:22   it is so crazy that it just can't be [TS]

00:04:23   real but [TS]

00:04:24   with the songs whether they're overdub [TS]

00:04:28   which they are in some parts or whether [TS]

00:04:29   they're performing live as they're doing [TS]

00:04:30   in one of the sound checks and in a [TS]

00:04:33   couple of the interviews you know it's [TS]

00:04:35   real and I guess that goes a long way [TS]

00:04:36   yeah that that's something a lot of [TS]

00:04:38   these like mockumentaries kind of don't [TS]

00:04:40   really think they really doesn't work [TS]

00:04:42   because the reality of the story they're [TS]

00:04:45   telling us that this is a rock band had [TS]

00:04:46   a huge success 15-20 years ago [TS]

00:04:49   they're definitely write n 1020 years [TS]

00:04:51   ago 15 years ago there there on the way [TS]

00:04:53   but they can still like bringing a crowd [TS]

00:04:55   and most mockumentaries would be well [TS]

00:04:58   let's gets like stupid songs that just [TS]

00:05:00   don't work people who just cant play the [TS]

00:05:03   fact that they are decent musicians they [TS]

00:05:05   can really play the stuff [TS]

00:05:07   not only does it sell that idea but also [TS]

00:05:09   you sort of get another layer in when [TS]

00:05:11   you figure out that ok so they're good [TS]

00:05:13   musicians they can really play and they [TS]

00:05:15   can compose good songs they're probably [TS]

00:05:17   the reason why they never made it to [TS]

00:05:18   that next level is that they just have [TS]

00:05:20   absolutely no taste whatsoever what they [TS]

00:05:23   wanted to the really stupid songs about [TS]

00:05:25   bottoms and sex farms and let's do a [TS]

00:05:29   song about Stonehenge it'll be all like [TS]

00:05:30   we'll be there huge master fiance was [TS]

00:05:33   just this is this [TS]

00:05:34   yeah and everything like every song [TS]

00:05:36   every song that they write is like the [TS]

00:05:38   doodle on the cover of anybody's trapper [TS]

00:05:40   keeper with her 14 years old and a boy [TS]

00:05:43   and puberty that's every single song [TS]

00:05:46   with spinal tap does and and they're all [TS]

00:05:48   they all sound like you know we've we've [TS]

00:05:52   heard those songs by other bands for [TS]

00:05:55   real that were completely straight and [TS]

00:05:57   perfectly sincere in there in there you [TS]

00:06:02   know in their juvenile you know sexual [TS]

00:06:05   longings I mean at you know the one [TS]

00:06:08   thing that after i saw this movie for [TS]

00:06:11   the first time which was probably and I [TS]

00:06:13   don't know 1985-86 I had a hard time [TS]

00:06:16   taking going to concerts and not [TS]

00:06:19   laughing excellent and tax on state [TS]

00:06:22   because they were exactly the same and [TS]

00:06:25   apparently i guess a number i was doing [TS]

00:06:27   a little bit of reading beforehand about [TS]

00:06:28   this and I I didn't realize how many [TS]

00:06:30   rock and rollers watch this movie and [TS]

00:06:34   either didn't get the joke or were [TS]

00:06:37   where the first time or were sort of [TS]

00:06:41   shocked and appalled and said this is [TS]

00:06:43   liquid that that they made a movie of us [TS]

00:06:45   you know this is all this is this is [TS]

00:06:48   like our lives so one of the one of the [TS]

00:06:51   things that's amazing about these songs [TS]

00:06:52   right i saw this movie for the first [TS]

00:06:54   time on video in after having heard [TS]

00:06:57   about it and it being famous [TS]

00:06:59   I think maybe right before I went to [TS]

00:07:02   college or right right when i started in [TS]

00:07:05   college and and i remember i literally [TS]

00:07:07   being on the floor pounding the floor [TS]

00:07:10   and crying with laughter as I watched it [TS]

00:07:12   so it was it was not overhyped it lived [TS]

00:07:15   up to the hype it more and more than did [TS]

00:07:17   that but when you talk about the [TS]

00:07:18   songwriting I mean it is that perfect [TS]

00:07:19   combination these are songs the [TS]

00:07:21   reasonable songs they're actually catchy [TS]

00:07:23   and it's not just that they're juvenile [TS]

00:07:25   but it's the it's the they they come [TS]

00:07:28   across as being written by somebody who [TS]

00:07:30   thinks they're being really really [TS]

00:07:32   clever and and and they're not when [TS]

00:07:35   there's a fine line between its City [TS]

00:07:39   stupid another level with this is spinal [TS]

00:07:42   tap starting with big bottom right with [TS]

00:07:45   big bottom let's get it out of the way [TS]

00:07:47   right at the beginning there is nothing [TS]

00:07:49   subtle here and there's nothing clever [TS]

00:07:50   here and it and and it's painful and yet [TS]

00:07:54   incredibly catchy incredibly Cassidy [TS]

00:07:56   exactly [TS]

00:07:57   oh it's like it's like--there's they're [TS]

00:08:01   sort of those songs songs where it's [TS]

00:08:03   like as it sits like springtime for [TS]

00:08:05   Hitler for the producers have to remind [TS]

00:08:08   myself that I could not sing the song [TS]

00:08:10   allowed i'm taking my walk if we walk [TS]

00:08:15   through from the beginning I mean we are [TS]

00:08:17   introduced right away to the band we get [TS]

00:08:21   a David st. Hubbins on lead guitar Nigel [TS]

00:08:25   tufnell on lead guitar nice right [TS]

00:08:28   why have one lead guitar when you can [TS]

00:08:29   have two Derek smalls on-base Harry [TS]

00:08:32   Shearer and then there's a keyboard [TS]

00:08:34   player in the series of drummers turns [TS]

00:08:36   out a series of drummers and the first [TS]

00:08:41   let's say the first thing after the [TS]

00:08:43   after the opening number one first their [TS]

00:08:45   interviews with a bunch of real fans and [TS]

00:08:49   that is that is a real aspect of this is [TS]

00:08:51   the piece [TS]

00:08:51   the lady who says well I feel like you [TS]

00:08:53   know that you musically connected with [TS]

00:08:56   the band real person actual person you [TS]

00:09:00   till you can't make this stuff up but [TS]

00:09:02   then we that but then the movie launches [TS]

00:09:04   with this party that is kicking them off [TS]

00:09:06   on their american tour right and and [TS]

00:09:08   this is that moment where I think how [TS]

00:09:09   did anybody think this was this was real [TS]

00:09:11   because it's because we get Fran [TS]

00:09:13   Drescher as Bobby flagman who says her [TS]

00:09:16   name again and again and then they put [TS]

00:09:17   up the title that says her name is just [TS]

00:09:19   a stupid joke but it's great and this [TS]

00:09:21   has got the mind for are serving food [TS]

00:09:23   and and it's inexplicably Dana Carvey [TS]

00:09:25   and Billy Crystal who and they end up [TS]

00:09:28   with one line each and I imagine there's [TS]

00:09:30   an entire thing with the mines that just [TS]

00:09:32   got completely cut out because this [TS]

00:09:33   movie was famously i think five hours or [TS]

00:09:36   so in running time at in its first edit [TS]

00:09:38   and then they ended up cutting it to 90 [TS]

00:09:40   minutes which is not unlike any [TS]

00:09:42   documentary right you're gonna find the [TS]

00:09:44   stories you go [TS]

00:09:45   I bet especially since this was so this [TS]

00:09:47   was improvisational and they got great [TS]

00:09:50   people who knew how to really they [TS]

00:09:52   stayed in character the whole time this [TS]

00:09:54   something that really didn't like from [TS]

00:09:55   the later like Christopher Guest [TS]

00:09:57   mockumentaries you can tell that these [TS]

00:09:58   are people who are dying to say [TS]

00:10:00   something that they hope is going to [TS]

00:10:02   make it into the final edit and so and [TS]

00:10:04   there you can but you can get leaks [TS]

00:10:06   these extended dvds that have like hours [TS]

00:10:08   of additional footage and I so encourage [TS]

00:10:11   you to seek out by 11 applying on ebay [TS]

00:10:14   criterias the diversion that had I seems [TS]

00:10:18   like every scrap of footage that that [TS]

00:10:20   ever was even considered foreigners like [TS]

00:10:21   five hours for the bonus stuff and i [TS]

00:10:23   paid like a hundred and forty dollars [TS]

00:10:25   for an eBay or something and all man [TS]

00:10:28   just broke it open and watched it for [TS]

00:10:30   five hours straight is that good [TS]

00:10:32   so yes you see right there is there is [TS]

00:10:34   backstage stuff between the two my have [TS]

00:10:36   I have the I thought the criterion DVD [TS]

00:10:40   the MGM DVD and now i have the blu-ray [TS]

00:10:41   and all of them have some slightly [TS]

00:10:44   different stuff on them the most notably [TS]

00:10:45   is the criterion DVD not only doesn't [TS]

00:10:48   have a raft of footage that's that cut [TS]

00:10:51   from the movie although there's some [TS]

00:10:52   stuff that's on the MGMT VD that isn't [TS]

00:10:54   on the criterion but most of the good [TS]

00:10:56   stuff including see metal argue is as [TS]

00:10:59   funny as anything in the movie that we [TS]

00:11:00   can get to it when we talk about Bruno [TS]

00:11:02   Kirby uh-huh it [TS]

00:11:04   it's also got yes actually got a [TS]

00:11:06   commentary track that is by the actors [TS]

00:11:09   out of character and and the the more [TS]

00:11:13   readily available now DVD has got them [TS]

00:11:15   doing a very funny in character [TS]

00:11:17   commentary track where they're [TS]

00:11:19   complaining about how this is such a [TS]

00:11:20   hack job by Marty Bergey and that puts [TS]

00:11:23   them in the worst possible light and it [TS]

00:11:25   wasn't really like this totally easy [TS]

00:11:27   he's just taking the pace he's taking [TS]

00:11:29   the pace okay but um but the original is [TS]

00:11:31   great because you you've got them out of [TS]

00:11:33   character talking about how they made [TS]

00:11:34   the movie and it's got all these amazing [TS]

00:11:36   just miles and miles of uncut are of cut [TS]

00:11:42   footage that is is absolutely crazy [TS]

00:11:45   what else is in this ad there's a it [TS]

00:11:47   Patrick mackney is in this scene as [TS]

00:11:51   adenosine hog founder of cruise was [TS]

00:11:55   knighted for his creating hardwood take [TS]

00:11:57   summer camp for pellaeon's boys [TS]

00:12:02   good grief what else what else is in [TS]

00:12:06   this this is just bad bad puns we meet [TS]

00:12:09   Bob black man he makes the year that and [TS]

00:12:11   so tap into America and everything here [TS]

00:12:14   ya go [TS]

00:12:16   well no I also not wit no we we have [TS]

00:12:20   like experience with like marketing [TS]

00:12:21   people in PR people wasn't Bobby flagman [TS]

00:12:24   so familiar to us this that one person [TS]

00:12:27   who's like app like the industry party [TS]

00:12:29   who wants to make sure that someone meet [TS]

00:12:30   someone else and when a joke is made [TS]

00:12:33   want to make sure everybody knows that [TS]

00:12:34   joke was heard and appreciated the oh [TS]

00:12:36   god is so great I Bobby black man Bobby [TS]

00:12:41   flagman I whatever and then right after [TS]

00:12:44   this we get Bruno Kirby right driving [TS]

00:12:46   them in the limo and then being from LA [TS]

00:12:50   one of the pleasures of this movie [TS]

00:12:52   because i know you're you're from la is [TS]

00:12:54   realizing that every single thing in it [TS]

00:12:56   was shot in LA and it's doubling for [TS]

00:12:57   every city in north america and when [TS]

00:12:59   they're in the limo driving i took great [TS]

00:13:01   pleasure this time and just watching out [TS]

00:13:03   the window at all the things that are [TS]

00:13:05   not in New York City that they drive [TS]

00:13:06   fast as they do it because it was it's [TS]

00:13:09   all it's basically downtown LA I'm a [TS]

00:13:12   shot most of it is square blocks of [TS]

00:13:14   downtown every time i'm down by the by [TS]

00:13:16   LAX I [TS]

00:13:17   look around and and and like spinal tap [TS]

00:13:19   spinal tap spinal tap it's like that's [TS]

00:13:22   atlanta that's the Detroit that's New [TS]

00:13:25   York City it's all just until they get [TS]

00:13:28   finally to LA at the end of the movie [TS]

00:13:29   but broker be just such a bizarre [TS]

00:13:32   character and hehe again we know most of [TS]

00:13:36   his stuff got cut but he still has this [TS]

00:13:40   wonderful thing where he where where [TS]

00:13:42   they're reading uh I think tecnica is a [TS]

00:13:44   Derek yes I can yes reading it now yeah [TS]

00:13:47   Derek Derek I think Derek is reading yes [TS]

00:13:49   i can buy I actually believe its [TS]

00:13:51   position one of his groupies that that's [TS]

00:13:53   for this reference [TS]

00:13:54   oh you're right yeah that's right that's [TS]

00:13:55   right by Sammy Davis jr. and and that [TS]

00:13:58   leads / no crew Kirby the the the limo [TS]

00:14:02   driver who's sitting up front with with [TS]

00:14:04   Marty Bergey the director to talk about [TS]

00:14:06   his favorite scene in yes i can buy [TS]

00:14:09   Sammy Davis jr. involving Frank Sinatra [TS]

00:14:11   it turns out that he's a an obsessive [TS]

00:14:12   Frank Sinatra fan and this leads the [TS]

00:14:15   band to just roll up the window between [TS]

00:14:17   them and the and the driver so that they [TS]

00:14:19   don't have to listen anymore he gets [TS]

00:14:21   very upset because they're not really [TS]

00:14:22   showing proper respect to Frank Sinatra [TS]

00:14:24   and this right roll thing is a fad [TS]

00:14:29   I wouldn't tell them that this is just a [TS]

00:14:32   fan but in the cut seems there is a [TS]

00:14:35   fantastic scene and this is what I [TS]

00:14:37   commend people if you can find it and i [TS]

00:14:39   believe it's actually on the blu-ray but [TS]

00:14:41   it was originally just on that criterion [TS]

00:14:43   collection version where Bruno Kirby I [TS]

00:14:47   believe delete is busy delivering pizza [TS]

00:14:50   to the hotel room he comes up to the [TS]

00:14:52   hotel room that they're staying in and [TS]

00:14:55   they get him high they give him my I [TS]

00:14:58   think they just give them a joint in the [TS]

00:14:59   anybody to get him high and and there's [TS]

00:15:03   literally a smash cut spent smash cuts [TS]

00:15:05   to that is under Hannah's name is black [TS]

00:15:08   black little Underpants singing this [TS]

00:15:10   address thinking my wife my way into [TS]

00:15:13   into a pizza crust is holding a [TS]

00:15:16   microphone [TS]

00:15:18   and what fun happened part of what sells [TS]

00:15:24   it is that now like everybody in that [TS]

00:15:26   room in that scene is like laughing and [TS]

00:15:29   falling down hysterically out of [TS]

00:15:31   character because now now it's michael [TS]

00:15:33   mckean now it's was very sheer who [TS]

00:15:37   cannot believe that her curvy is killing [TS]

00:15:39   it this bad this business and the last [TS]

00:15:41   thing he does is he says to them now [TS]

00:15:44   that's music that passes out [TS]

00:15:46   that's collapse and that's it that's it [TS]

00:15:49   absolutely great great / it's sad that [TS]

00:15:52   it's not in the movie i understand why [TS]

00:15:54   somebody the chatroom pointed out that [TS]

00:15:55   if you look at the unedited version all [TS]

00:15:57   that footage it's it's you know it goes [TS]

00:16:00   on forever in its life listen I i [TS]

00:16:01   actually agree with that i think that [TS]

00:16:03   them cutting a demo is a very short [TS]

00:16:04   movie it's 90 minutes long [TS]

00:16:06   you know I think the reason it's a [TS]

00:16:07   classic is that they were ruthless [TS]

00:16:09   there's a there's a whole subplot about [TS]

00:16:10   their opening act was committed because [TS]

00:16:13   it ends up getting more famous and it's [TS]

00:16:15   a it's a band it's a it's an all-girl [TS]

00:16:16   band and that's why the migrating herpes [TS]

00:16:21   sores on Derek and Nigel that you know [TS]

00:16:23   which have now been taken to be like [TS]

00:16:25   well you know we're sharing somebody or [TS]

00:16:27   they're gay lovers whatever was like [TS]

00:16:28   well no it's the subplot about this band [TS]

00:16:30   that was entirely exercise from the [TS]

00:16:32   movie so it's great that it's 90 minutes [TS]

00:16:34   long but this is one of those scenes [TS]

00:16:36   that that is it's worth finding it [TS]

00:16:40   because it's just so great and I [TS]

00:16:42   understand why they cut it out my I [TS]

00:16:43   don't think of five hour version of this [TS]

00:16:45   is spinal tap would actually be a better [TS]

00:16:47   movie it but they did definitely there's [TS]

00:16:51   some gems in there that they cut out [TS]

00:16:52   when they're finding the story there is [TS]

00:16:56   a there's a much longer version of the [TS]

00:16:58   scene it just in the limo were Bruno [TS]

00:17:02   Kirby is going on at some length about [TS]

00:17:04   Frank Sinatra's life and I a lot of the [TS]

00:17:07   stuff is on youtube by the way I'm sure [TS]

00:17:09   I'm and it doesn't in the end the longer [TS]

00:17:12   seen with because i watched it the other [TS]

00:17:14   day after i rewatched the movie and it [TS]

00:17:17   yeah it's not as good [TS]

00:17:20   it's not as tight mean you can [TS]

00:17:22   understand why I just wanted to riff at [TS]

00:17:25   length because they got a lot of great [TS]

00:17:26   stuff out of it but [TS]

00:17:27   in seeing included also that the the [TS]

00:17:31   subplot with the dose was the name of [TS]

00:17:34   and fri and yeah and there's a there's [TS]

00:17:38   like a 17-minute cut of that on youtube [TS]

00:17:42   in the footage is not very good with the [TS]

00:17:45   quality the quality of its not they're [TS]

00:17:47   going up with spinal tap is going down [TS]

00:17:49   and and in the end it's I think not only [TS]

00:17:53   a more plot to them this movie really [TS]

00:17:55   required but yeah it's i think its own [TS]

00:17:58   little pleasure to watch spinal tap go [TS]

00:18:01   down I don't think you really need to [TS]

00:18:02   contrast it i mean other than when they [TS]

00:18:04   run into howard hesseman in the in the [TS]

00:18:06   Kansas City holiday inn or wherever they [TS]

00:18:08   are and and and he's obviously a [TS]

00:18:11   megastar whose past he's gonna sell up [TS]

00:18:14   your normal dome up [TS]

00:18:16   he's the man he's the best in the world [TS]

00:18:18   right right and make sure won't even [TS]

00:18:19   talk to them but he's that he's the [TS]

00:18:20   manager right so that that's all you [TS]

00:18:24   need [TS]

00:18:24   I mean that tells the story do you need [TS]

00:18:26   this kind of their going up while we're [TS]

00:18:28   going down kind of plot at all and you [TS]

00:18:30   really need that kind of a plot in this [TS]

00:18:31   movie anyway it's clear that spinal tap [TS]

00:18:34   it is and their audience is becoming [TS]

00:18:36   increasingly selective as it goes on the [TS]

00:18:39   the key part of that scene that they [TS]

00:18:41   could that they kept in is you can tell [TS]

00:18:43   they've got their glasses they're dark [TS]

00:18:45   glasses on there trying to be [TS]

00:18:46   conspicuous because they remember what [TS]

00:18:48   it was like during those four months of [TS]

00:18:49   the late 1960s when they were you being [TS]

00:18:52   chased by by the public and they [TS]

00:18:54   couldn't there never was asking them for [TS]

00:18:55   autographs but as soon as they see these [TS]

00:18:58   girls from the other end of the corridor [TS]

00:18:59   so oh my god it's you that uh oh here it [TS]

00:19:02   comes here it cab there glee there so [TS]

00:19:05   thrilled to be recognized but know that [TS]

00:19:06   run right past them because they [TS]

00:19:07   recognize the young rocks of the wrong [TS]

00:19:09   going rock store when people talk about [TS]

00:19:11   this movie they talk about spinal tap [TS]

00:19:13   being this legendarily you know bad [TS]

00:19:15   heavy metal band and I mean away [TS]

00:19:19   Marty Bergey puts it at the very [TS]

00:19:21   beginning is that they're well known for [TS]

00:19:23   being one of England's loudest bands [TS]

00:19:25   that's there that's the claim to fame is [TS]

00:19:27   the volume level not any other [TS]

00:19:28   proficiency about them but when when you [TS]

00:19:31   watch the movie it there's a much more [TS]

00:19:33   cutting commentary about them that I [TS]

00:19:35   think people don't talk about when they [TS]

00:19:37   talk about this movie which is that they [TS]

00:19:39   are [TS]

00:19:40   brazen ripoff artists they're basically [TS]

00:19:44   chasing whatever genre will be the most [TS]

00:19:47   successful for them and this doesn't you [TS]

00:19:49   know it's very easy to think back about [TS]

00:19:51   spinal tap and think of them as this [TS]

00:19:52   heavy metal band but we see I mean [TS]

00:19:54   starting with the fact that they're [TS]

00:19:55   going to be the originals and they have [TS]

00:19:57   to change the name to the new originals [TS]

00:19:59   because there's already a band called [TS]

00:20:00   the originals but then we see they've [TS]

00:20:02   got the listen to the flower people wear [TS]

00:20:05   their where the where the psychedelic [TS]

00:20:08   band they've got give me some give me [TS]

00:20:10   some money whether the Thames minh and [TS]

00:20:11   the red Begley is running and they're [TS]

00:20:13   there they're all clean-cut in that [TS]

00:20:17   version right and so you see as as you [TS]

00:20:19   go that they are you know shameless in [TS]

00:20:23   changing John Rah's to find a hit or [TS]

00:20:27   shit you know with which i think i think [TS]

00:20:30   that gets lost and I think it's funny [TS]

00:20:32   now what was funny since then is that [TS]

00:20:33   now they're kind of locked in as being [TS]

00:20:35   viewed it retro actively is this heavy [TS]

00:20:37   metal band that the guys in the movie [TS]

00:20:39   have gone and played lots of live dates [TS]

00:20:41   a spinal tap but one of the jokes about [TS]

00:20:44   spinal tap is that they just have no [TS]

00:20:46   they're they're frauds in essentially [TS]

00:20:49   they'll do whatever and play whatever [TS]

00:20:50   kind of music and the fact that this [TS]

00:20:52   heavy metal this rough heavy metal band [TS]

00:20:54   is doing sex farm and big bottom is the [TS]

00:20:56   same people who did listen to the flower [TS]

00:20:58   people and give me some money is [TS]

00:21:00   ridiculous but that doesn't that kind of [TS]

00:21:02   underscore the idea that the only reason [TS]

00:21:04   why they're in the in the rock and roll [TS]

00:21:06   is to get won't get teenage girls and so [TS]

00:21:09   even though like they're now at it [TS]

00:21:11   during the during the movie they must be [TS]

00:21:12   what their early thirties maybe mid [TS]

00:21:13   thirties so there are there will always [TS]

00:21:15   be playing whatever style of music that [TS]

00:21:17   teenage girls go to concerts for right [TS]

00:21:19   and there and there are there their [TS]

00:21:22   audiences entirely teenage boys right [TS]

00:21:25   because the the glue young women are [TS]

00:21:27   terrified because they have armadillos [TS]

00:21:29   in their trial to drink haha don't mind [TS]

00:21:35   if I do [TS]

00:21:36   that's good that's good well they at the [TS]

00:21:39   end they talk about we don't want to be [TS]

00:21:41   you know in our mid forties still doing [TS]

00:21:44   this this is our opportunity to do [TS]

00:21:47   something different and all those [TS]

00:21:48   projects that we talked about doing with [TS]

00:21:50   our lives which of course is immediately [TS]

00:21:53   change by the fact that [TS]

00:21:54   sex farmers on the charts in japan so [TS]

00:21:56   much for that if they can still make [TS]

00:21:58   money doing this this this racket [TS]

00:22:01   they'll just keep on doing it because [TS]

00:22:02   that's that's really you know that's [TS]

00:22:05   really what they're about is do whatever [TS]

00:22:07   they can to keep to keep on going [TS]

00:22:09   I think that they there the the secret [TS]

00:22:12   to the group is that they just will have [TS]

00:22:14   never progressed beyond age 20 and that [TS]

00:22:17   if it were as any other band or most [TS]

00:22:21   other musicians a point at which they [TS]

00:22:23   realize that oh for God's sakes and I'm [TS]

00:22:25   basically is barely scratching out a [TS]

00:22:27   living [TS]

00:22:28   although I can barely get an audience [TS]

00:22:29   together i'm having no success [TS]

00:22:31   whatsoever like finding like five foot [TS]

00:22:35   building something that's new in my own [TS]

00:22:36   I should sort of give up the dream a [TS]

00:22:38   little bit you know play guitar on the [TS]

00:22:39   weekends but find something else to do [TS]

00:22:41   with my life now these people are always [TS]

00:22:43   going to be doing that same thing so [TS]

00:22:44   long as there is any chance they could [TS]

00:22:46   maintain this illusion that they are [TS]

00:22:48   eight a successful rock band they're [TS]

00:22:51   going to do it if that means going to go [TS]

00:22:52   into Japan they're gonna go to japan i [TS]

00:22:54   wanted to talk about musical styles 11 [TS]

00:22:56   last point I wanted to make which I I [TS]

00:22:57   while watching Stonehenge that that [TS]

00:23:02   somebody in the chat room was saying how [TS]

00:23:04   they're not that knowledgeable about [TS]

00:23:05   about heavy metal and so some of the [TS]

00:23:09   jokes [TS]

00:23:09   didn't you know maybe maybe went over [TS]

00:23:11   their head i'm not particularly [TS]

00:23:13   knowledgeable about heavy metal uh I [TS]

00:23:16   other than just sort of in general the [TS]

00:23:17   stereotypes of it which for me work just [TS]

00:23:20   fine and I've heard some of the famous [TS]

00:23:22   stories the scene where where the where [TS]

00:23:25   the complaining about the large cold [TS]

00:23:27   cuts with the small pieces of bread as a [TS]

00:23:30   reference to you know endless stories [TS]

00:23:32   about different musicians writers and [TS]

00:23:34   getting upset that there are you know [TS]

00:23:35   only brown Eminem's or no brown Eminem's [TS]

00:23:38   or anything like that but the one [TS]

00:23:40   reference that I that I get now that I [TS]

00:23:42   didn't get the first time that I saw [TS]

00:23:44   this movie is a is Stonehenge you know [TS]

00:23:48   people people say Donald happens a [TS]

00:23:50   parody of heavy metal but you know [TS]

00:23:52   listen to the flower people is not it's [TS]

00:23:53   a comparative a different genre give me [TS]

00:23:56   some money is not and Stonehenge is a [TS]

00:23:59   prog-rock you know really with all the [TS]

00:24:03   makeup and the that they're wearing and [TS]

00:24:05   the and the set its Genesis you know [TS]

00:24:07   that's a that's a generous [TS]

00:24:08   sis or Peter Gabriel era Genesis or [TS]

00:24:10   other prog rock band from them from the [TS]

00:24:13   mid-seventies that they're doing they're [TS]

00:24:15   so it suggests that they also tried that [TS]

00:24:17   Avenue to see if they could make that [TS]

00:24:18   work and that didn't work either so they [TS]

00:24:20   went back to sex farm and and it's great [TS]

00:24:24   and having having heard more of that [TS]

00:24:26   music now than when I first saw it that [TS]

00:24:27   the Stonehenge seen it is a little bit [TS]

00:24:30   more resonant because I can laugh about [TS]

00:24:32   the pretension and you know the costumes [TS]

00:24:34   and the makeup and all those things that [TS]

00:24:36   those bands that you know your Genesis [TS]

00:24:38   and king crimson and bands like that did [TS]

00:24:40   in the seventies so that made me laugh [TS]

00:24:42   on another level then adjust the very [TS]

00:24:44   small person who might have crushed the [TS]

00:24:47   very small statue that there is [TS]

00:24:50   something that I wanted to mention that [TS]

00:24:52   it may be you know before they go to to [TS]

00:24:57   Philadelphia and ride in the limousine [TS]

00:24:59   with with the with Bruno Kirby you know [TS]

00:25:03   there throughout the movie there are [TS]

00:25:05   these these you know you when you made [TS]

00:25:07   the point before about you know [TS]

00:25:10   depicting their decline you didn't need [TS]

00:25:11   to contrast it with that subplot with [TS]

00:25:13   the with the other band that was rising [TS]

00:25:15   I mean there are these little things [TS]

00:25:16   throughout the movie and before they go [TS]

00:25:18   to Philadelphia you know in faith their [TS]

00:25:23   manager comes to them as well we're not [TS]

00:25:25   really going to saturate new york city [TS]

00:25:27   we're gonna go to Philadelphia that's a [TS]

00:25:29   real rock and roll town and and that's [TS]

00:25:32   the first of several sets references [TS]

00:25:35   throughout the welcome mat classic i was [TS]

00:25:37   in Boston last weekend and literally [TS]

00:25:40   walking down the street with with the [TS]

00:25:42   Dan Morgan and and Phillip Michaels and [TS]

00:25:45   and and we made that very reference that [TS]

00:25:48   you know it's don't worry it's not a big [TS]

00:25:50   college down not a big college town this [TS]

00:25:54   week should do this way out of booze we [TS]

00:25:56   should do this for every episode i love [TS]

00:25:58   this we should what was it that that'll [TS]

00:26:02   that'll be able to live with this like [TS]

00:26:04   pee-wee's playhouse we'll do a secret [TS]

00:26:05   word the remember every time you hear [TS]

00:26:08   the word sticker drink real loud my [TS]

00:26:12   theory on spinal tap is is mostly that [TS]

00:26:14   they really did stop developing it's not [TS]

00:26:16   so much that they're chasing after all [TS]

00:26:18   kinds of new directions or that they're [TS]

00:26:20   always 34 years behind [TS]

00:26:22   inside part of it is just that they try [TS]

00:26:25   to live in this moment in which the the [TS]

00:26:28   in which they are there they will always [TS]

00:26:30   be able to Mabel maybe get 300 maybe 500 [TS]

00:26:33   people inside a group it's inside venue [TS]

00:26:36   they can they can maybe support maybe a [TS]

00:26:41   tour of five or six very carefully [TS]

00:26:43   chosen venues and i'm not sure if it's [TS]

00:26:46   declining so much as this is the bottom [TS]

00:26:48   this is where they want up and this is [TS]

00:26:50   this is this is the point at which that [TS]

00:26:52   the bus is moving so slowly that they [TS]

00:26:54   can either continue to grab the bus at [TS]

00:26:56   4.5 miles an hour and get nowhere or at [TS]

00:27:00   this point they can safely jump off the [TS]

00:27:02   bus and go someplace else but they're [TS]

00:27:03   just choose to keep writing that sleight [TS]

00:27:05   is the question that there you know is [TS]

00:27:08   it bad necessarily you know it i think [TS]

00:27:10   it's a good question that that is spinal [TS]

00:27:13   tap just becoming more selective I mean [TS]

00:27:16   it's such a it's just a funny line from [TS]

00:27:18   en where he's trying to plant paint a [TS]

00:27:20   good picture about the fact that they [TS]

00:27:21   used to be able to fill arenas and they [TS]

00:27:23   can't now but there are lots of musical [TS]

00:27:25   artists that I mean this is the curve a [TS]

00:27:26   musical artist is necessarily that they [TS]

00:27:28   go from being big hits two residing in [TS]

00:27:31   the where they know where they now file [TS]

00:27:32   being daily like a yes that's doing I [TS]

00:27:37   think thank you three or is it or is it [TS]

00:27:40   that you end up at that it's the feeling [TS]

00:27:42   like what we used to be big and now [TS]

00:27:44   we're we're small small can be good if [TS]

00:27:46   you've gotten lots of musical artists do [TS]

00:27:48   really well with a very small audience [TS]

00:27:50   but there is this feeling like are they [TS]

00:27:51   really small or are they just done well [TS]

00:27:56   that's it well that's that that's a good [TS]

00:27:57   commentary on what know what it's like [TS]

00:27:59   to be a musician today and what famous [TS]

00:28:01   really like where if you were to talk [TS]

00:28:03   about the the pinnacle of success and [TS]

00:28:07   fame used to be Charles Schultz and [TS]

00:28:09   peanuts everybody on the planet would be [TS]

00:28:12   able to know who knows who Charles [TS]

00:28:13   Schulz's those few who maybe don't they [TS]

00:28:16   know Snoopy is and Charlie Brown the [TS]

00:28:18   concept of pulling away the football the [TS]

00:28:19   last second and the security blanket [TS]

00:28:21   that kind of every single newspaper City [TS]

00:28:24   newspaper has that that stripping [TS]

00:28:25   everybody has heard of it [TS]

00:28:26   now the pinnacle of success is something [TS]

00:28:28   like the oatmeal or something like [TS]

00:28:30   player versus player where I was [TS]

00:28:32   surprised that there's just a 34 years [TS]

00:28:34   ago when I was [TS]

00:28:35   talking to like 5 600 people and just as [TS]

00:28:38   an experiment so how many people have [TS]

00:28:39   heard of neil gaiman I'm thinking here [TS]

00:28:41   there's no writer more famous than Neil [TS]

00:28:44   Gaiman out of 5 her people which is I [TS]

00:28:46   would admittedly diverse in age of 50 [TS]

00:28:49   people maybe a dozen maybe two dozen [TS]

00:28:51   raise their hands and yet he ended it by [TS]

00:28:54   every measure of success he is immensely [TS]

00:28:57   successful so maybe if if they remade [TS]

00:28:59   this movie today or if they decided to [TS]

00:29:01   do another sequel to spinal tap [TS]

00:29:03   they could do a thing where they're [TS]

00:29:04   still filling just their only feeling [TS]

00:29:05   like thousand see clubs 2000c clubs but [TS]

00:29:08   they're playing like 200 gigs gigs a [TS]

00:29:11   year and they're making lots and lots [TS]

00:29:13   and lots don't like Jonathan Coulton [TS]

00:29:14   right they've got they've got their [TS]

00:29:16   audience and it's not a huge audience [TS]

00:29:18   but they're they're famous in their [TS]

00:29:20   little in their little area whatever see [TS]

00:29:22   if they can find that and that's the [TS]

00:29:23   question I have about spinal tap [TS]

00:29:25   watching the night in the movie is that [TS]

00:29:26   you know and that's sort of i think [TS]

00:29:28   basically what happens at the end as [TS]

00:29:30   well no there is still an audience [TS]

00:29:32   somewhere for spinal there'll always be [TS]

00:29:33   an audience somewhere for them and but [TS]

00:29:35   they're never going to be big but maybe [TS]

00:29:37   maybe it doesn't [TS]

00:29:38   maybe doesn't matter if they just gotta [TS]

00:29:40   that more selective audience they might [TS]

00:29:43   be okay doing county fairs and look at [TS]

00:29:45   some of these these groups that are [TS]

00:29:47   doing county fairs now you think like [TS]

00:29:49   God how is that possible last chance to [TS]

00:29:51   see journey at the at the local county [TS]

00:29:55   fair and I feel really bad about it [TS]

00:29:56   that's the that's the only thing that [TS]

00:29:58   the only positive thing I see coming [TS]

00:30:00   from this widespread like casino [TS]

00:30:01   gambling all these rooms that now not [TS]

00:30:05   now here we're if any money has a game [TS]

00:30:07   anybody great kid has a place to play [TS]

00:30:10   yeah flock of seagulls if they can find [TS]

00:30:13   two more people to replace the two [TS]

00:30:14   people who went into life insurance and [TS]

00:30:15   I very specifically asked for it to be [TS]

00:30:17   Neil Gaiman and puppet show [TS]

00:30:22   ok we'll give you that there you go i [TS]

00:30:25   love the there's a great bit that really [TS]

00:30:27   is like a Saturday Night Live sketch [TS]

00:30:29   that is rob reiner reading fake a handle [TS]

00:30:34   reviews of their album after them and [TS]

00:30:37   it's such a wonderful couple of minutes [TS]

00:30:39   because they they mocked up these fake [TS]

00:30:42   album covers including intravenous to [TS]

00:30:45   Milo which is like a statue [TS]

00:30:48   with with the i might be bad for them [TS]

00:30:53   with your homemade god it's so great and [TS]

00:30:56   it has it has the the classic and you [TS]

00:30:59   can also if you watch the reactions [TS]

00:31:01   here's a key in this movie watch watch [TS]

00:31:03   don't watch the person you're supposed [TS]

00:31:04   to watch watch everybody else because it [TS]

00:31:07   was largely improvised and there are so [TS]

00:31:09   many moments where they're laughing and [TS]

00:31:10   you know they're just laughing because [TS]

00:31:11   it's funny and not because the character [TS]

00:31:13   would let me try to cover it up and in [TS]

00:31:15   this scene [TS]

00:31:15   Rob Reiner is killing them desperately [TS]

00:31:18   treading water and a/c over pre-recorded [TS]

00:31:21   so great about that entertaining the [TS]

00:31:22   Gospel according to spinal tap where [TS]

00:31:24   where he said what David i create spinal [TS]

00:31:26   tap and couldn't have rested on that day [TS]

00:31:28   but the pinnacle it as a journalist I [TS]

00:31:33   find it especially fantastic is when the [TS]

00:31:36   shark sandwich review is simply shit [TS]

00:31:39   sandwich to which group back at ya ya [TS]

00:31:43   know that our way that out now it's [TS]

00:31:46   possible but that would be you know [TS]

00:31:49   you're just you're just making fun of us [TS]

00:31:51   that you made that up that's not real [TS]

00:31:53   it's so great and the cover sharks and [TS]

00:31:55   which is great because it's a sandwich [TS]

00:31:57   with white bread except the top of the [TS]

00:31:59   sandwiches like the top of an ocean and [TS]

00:32:01   there's a shark fin and what is so [TS]

00:32:03   terrible and it's so funny so i love [TS]

00:32:05   that that that's a that's a great but if [TS]

00:32:07   you watch christopher guest you'll see [TS]

00:32:08   that he's dying during that whole thing [TS]

00:32:10   because they're all they're all hearing [TS]

00:32:13   these for the very first time is your [TS]

00:32:15   brother kept them secret yet so we [TS]

00:32:17   should talk about the cover there's an [TS]

00:32:19   ongoing plot about the cover of smell [TS]

00:32:21   the glove which is the new album that's [TS]

00:32:23   going to be coming out from spinal tap [TS]

00:32:24   as this but they've recorded it and now [TS]

00:32:26   they're gonna tour to support it but [TS]

00:32:27   it's been delayed because the big the [TS]

00:32:31   big record stores don't want to handle [TS]

00:32:32   it because the album [TS]

00:32:34   it features a woman on all fours grease [TS]

00:32:38   a greased naked lady on all fours with a [TS]

00:32:40   chain wearing a dog collar with a chain [TS]

00:32:43   leading that man's and that has a [TS]

00:32:45   leather glove pressed into her face to [TS]

00:32:48   make has smell it you don't see that as [TS]

00:32:50   offensive as 1983 for God because they [TS]

00:32:53   wanted to do what what what what's the [TS]

00:32:57   what's the problem with it though [TS]

00:33:00   well comparable [TS]

00:33:02   compared to what I you know we were [TS]

00:33:04   around during the early eighties we've [TS]

00:33:05   seen album covers that the problem is [TS]

00:33:07   that like spinal tap is not a huge band [TS]

00:33:10   the problem the problem is that if if [TS]

00:33:13   you if you are like Motorhead or if you [TS]

00:33:15   if you are like guns and roses at their [TS]

00:33:18   apex of their selling power all that of [TS]

00:33:21   course is a line to give they could they [TS]

00:33:23   could have like shoved it right down [TS]

00:33:24   their throats but no there's a point [TS]

00:33:26   where they play that what Ricky flame or [TS]

00:33:28   whatever who's the guy that they meet in [TS]

00:33:29   the hotel lobby that his last out his [TS]

00:33:31   new album is he was he was tied with [TS]

00:33:34   table with volleys all these little bit [TS]

00:33:36   maybe was living there like so totally [TS]

00:33:38   different huh [TS]

00:33:40   it's it was due coming today we can [TS]

00:33:42   thank you to your name thank you very [TS]

00:33:44   much [TS]

00:33:45   yes and it but some people say that the [TS]

00:33:46   original cover of smell the glove is [TS]

00:33:49   sexist but I say what's wrong with being [TS]

00:33:51   sexy [TS]

00:33:51   what's wrong with being sexy sex ace [TS]

00:33:55   those are you two doing this is not wait [TS]

00:33:58   wait don't tell me when spinal tap made [TS]

00:34:04   their big comeback in 1992 I am I got a [TS]

00:34:09   press pass to go cover their drummer [TS]

00:34:11   auditions at the los angeles college in [TS]

00:34:13   and it was kind of sad because there [TS]

00:34:17   were all these you mean there were [TS]

00:34:19   hundreds of you know aspiring [TS]

00:34:23   professional drummers lined up there and [TS]

00:34:25   that thing turned out to be total BS [TS]

00:34:26   because I mean there wasn't just you [TS]

00:34:28   know it basically it was a gimmick to [TS]

00:34:31   get a lot of people out and they ended [TS]

00:34:33   up using a lot of a lot of more famous [TS]

00:34:36   drummers on their tour to you know its [TS]

00:34:38   guests premium Mick Fleetwood was one [TS]

00:34:40   but um I got to set it with the press [TS]

00:34:43   and you know i was still in college at [TS]

00:34:47   the time so I had no compunction about [TS]

00:34:48   you know behaving slightly [TS]

00:34:51   unprofessionally and I got all their [TS]

00:34:54   autographs and but but when I i put the [TS]

00:34:57   the PR photo in front of in front of [TS]

00:35:01   Christopher gas tonight and he signed [TS]

00:35:03   thing and I said that there's there's [TS]

00:35:04   nothing wrong with being sexy and he [TS]

00:35:06   looked at me in and it wasn't he had [TS]

00:35:09   this most bewildered look on his face it [TS]

00:35:11   wasn't like it wasn't like it was it [TS]

00:35:14   wasn't like the look you're [TS]

00:35:15   have somebody who was thinking of Christ [TS]

00:35:17   this is the 400 time I've heard this [TS]

00:35:20   it was more like what are you talking [TS]

00:35:23   about [TS]

00:35:24   but anyway there's nothing wrong with [TS]

00:35:26   being sexy and and that's how i got to [TS]

00:35:28   spinal taps autograph but Tom days did [TS]

00:35:31   they sign in character [TS]

00:35:32   oh yeah I did no but on but for years I [TS]

00:35:37   thought that the that cover that the [TS]

00:35:43   cover that they were discussing that was [TS]

00:35:45   so controversial I thought it was [TS]

00:35:47   supposed to be based on there's this [TS]

00:35:50   notorious covered of an album the [TS]

00:35:53   Scorpions put out called virgin killer [TS]

00:35:56   which had a at basically a naked [TS]

00:36:01   underage girl on it and nobody in the [TS]

00:36:05   United States was going to carry it if [TS]

00:36:08   they had it that way so it was replaced [TS]

00:36:09   with just a picture of the band but then [TS]

00:36:12   I read today that it was supposedly [TS]

00:36:14   based on a different album a Whitesnake [TS]

00:36:18   album that i had never heard of called [TS]

00:36:19   love hunter which features a naked woman [TS]

00:36:22   sort of being assaulted and it's an [TS]

00:36:25   illustration of a naked woman being [TS]

00:36:28   threatened by a giant Cobra white a [TS]

00:36:32   white snake you're saying yeah yeah and [TS]

00:36:34   so but there's got to be mean there's [TS]

00:36:36   probably half a dozen or a dozen album [TS]

00:36:39   covers that that whole controversy could [TS]

00:36:41   have been based upon because that was [TS]

00:36:43   just kind of the cheesy albums that you [TS]

00:36:45   you saw back in those days [TS]

00:36:47   well what's funny now is that actually [TS]

00:36:49   the history of the band has gotten a [TS]

00:36:50   little bit mixed up because of that what [TS]

00:36:52   ben says in 1992 they they did this [TS]

00:36:56   essentially 10th anniversary thing and [TS]

00:36:58   and they released an album break like [TS]

00:37:00   the wind and a tour and break like the [TS]

00:37:03   wind is strange because it contains [TS]

00:37:06   songs that are referred to in the movie [TS]

00:37:08   but we're never seen so so there's been [TS]

00:37:11   it's it's this weird kind of like if [TS]

00:37:13   you're in the continuity of spinal tap [TS]

00:37:15   it's a little bit weird because it's got [TS]

00:37:17   its got songs that you didn't at you [TS]

00:37:20   didn't actually hear but were referenced [TS]

00:37:21   by name or the album was referenced by [TS]

00:37:23   name and this song is supposedly from [TS]

00:37:25   the album it doesn't come across as it [TS]

00:37:27   being entirely a new albums [TS]

00:37:29   final tab but it's sort of like some new [TS]

00:37:31   songs from spinal tap and a bunch of [TS]

00:37:33   things that you you know from the [TS]

00:37:35   greatest hits catalog that they're [TS]

00:37:37   bringing to you and it's it's gotten so [TS]

00:37:39   strange that actually the blu-ray the [TS]

00:37:41   cover the blu-ray is the promo art from [TS]

00:37:43   break like the wind so it's not even [TS]

00:37:44   from 1982 is from 1992 various very [TS]

00:37:48   strange to keep track of sort of like [TS]

00:37:51   what what goes where in spinal tap and [TS]

00:37:54   spinal tap Lord because they've been [TS]

00:37:55   they decided after it became such a cult [TS]

00:37:57   hit to go back in and sort of start [TS]

00:37:59   coloring in you know some of the margins [TS]

00:38:01   and filling in some of the pieces that [TS]

00:38:03   weren't there and and I think it's kind [TS]

00:38:05   of hard to keep track of what's in what [TS]

00:38:07   was in the movie and what's all kind of [TS]

00:38:09   like supplemental material from a decade [TS]

00:38:12   or more later that there's a great line [TS]

00:38:14   from some interview with Harry Shearer [TS]

00:38:16   and which they they talk about the [TS]

00:38:18   popularity of spinal tap as a live band [TS]

00:38:20   and he says oh it's great because every [TS]

00:38:22   week every day every time we will [TS]

00:38:24   probably come to town we pretend to be [TS]

00:38:26   spinal tap in these like 2,000 people [TS]

00:38:28   pretend to be our fans and everybody has [TS]

00:38:31   a good time [TS]

00:38:33   yes it no one gets hurt some people get [TS]

00:38:35   paid [TS]

00:38:36   it's alright there's nothing wrong with [TS]

00:38:37   that tiny bread in the dressing room we [TS]

00:38:39   talked about just it's it's a great [TS]

00:38:42   scene because that is that Nigel yes I [TS]

00:38:45   is this choke it's just a travel plastic [TS]

00:38:49   about this thing that can be reasoned [TS]

00:38:52   out by a child but to him the fact that [TS]

00:38:55   you could you have to fold the meat but [TS]

00:38:56   you cannot fold the bread or the bread [TS]

00:38:58   breaks is infuriating to him and he [TS]

00:39:02   demands get me get me new bread i want [TS]

00:39:04   large bread and what the small of a [TS]

00:39:06   properly prophet saws bread so we can [TS]

00:39:09   wind up with you eat this [TS]

00:39:11   that's what would see but is it that the [TS]

00:39:15   one of the brilliant thing or maybe the [TS]

00:39:17   oversight thing is that some of the [TS]

00:39:19   lodge you could sort of see where half [TS]

00:39:20   the logic is like with the legendary [TS]

00:39:23   scene where Nigel issuing Martinez [TS]

00:39:25   guitar collection its and that's where [TS]

00:39:28   and then that's where you see you see [TS]

00:39:29   like the top of the Marshall amp that [TS]

00:39:31   goes to 11 and where he's trying to [TS]

00:39:33   explain well you have need that extra [TS]

00:39:35   push sure you've got all the way up all [TS]

00:39:36   the way up all the way up what he got [TS]

00:39:38   from that now we're so we've got you [TS]

00:39:40   just we can just turn these things to 11 [TS]

00:39:41   and Marty try to explain [TS]

00:39:43   well why don't you just have 10 be the [TS]

00:39:45   top number and that the top number you [TS]

00:39:47   just make that a little louder and it's [TS]

00:39:48   still 10 but it's a little bit louder [TS]

00:39:49   and you seem like just chewing gum [TS]

00:39:52   starting at the top and repeating these [TS]

00:39:53   go to eleven and and it actually did [TS]

00:39:56   take me when I remember seeing the first [TS]

00:39:59   time that but 11 is a higher number than [TS]

00:40:02   10 what is he talking about [TS]

00:40:04   and then I've had had my Nigel moment I [TS]

00:40:06   realized oh he's saying okay 10 is just [TS]

00:40:08   10 is not an absolute scale of loudness [TS]

00:40:11   as as as as certified by the Greenwich [TS]

00:40:16   Observatory is just an arbitrary number [TS]

00:40:18   that could be an open it is you know [TS]

00:40:20   this is the famous joke are famous punch [TS]

00:40:22   line from this movie and what's amazing [TS]

00:40:26   about it is in that one sentence that [TS]

00:40:30   Rob Reiner says it the logic and a logic [TS]

00:40:33   is completely unpacked it's not as if [TS]

00:40:35   the audience is left to laugh at the [TS]

00:40:38   ridiculousness of the fact that what you [TS]

00:40:40   know you could just make it louder and [TS]

00:40:41   make ten be the louder sound but but he [TS]

00:40:45   says the line and it is it is really [TS]

00:40:47   perfectly phrased that it that it [TS]

00:40:49   encapsulates everything that that it [TS]

00:40:52   makes no sense about this and all Nigel [TS]

00:40:55   can do at that point is respond with but [TS]

00:40:56   it's one louder [TS]

00:40:57   I've tried to explain that joke to [TS]

00:40:59   people and I can never do with the [TS]

00:41:02   Justice of just what Rob Reider says [TS]

00:41:03   that makes that exist without killing [TS]

00:41:05   the joke he explains the show completely [TS]

00:41:08   and it still leads to the best line in [TS]

00:41:10   the movie [TS]

00:41:11   ya see that it's it's that's why [TS]

00:41:14   improvisational comedy like this you [TS]

00:41:16   have to have people who are really good [TS]

00:41:17   at it and know what the who get it who [TS]

00:41:19   know what the point is because this is a [TS]

00:41:22   beautiful scene because part of what [TS]

00:41:23   makes it so funny is the pauses the [TS]

00:41:26   silences and when you see it being done [TS]

00:41:28   badly like me on youtube with people who [TS]

00:41:30   think they can be do a spinal tap type [TS]

00:41:32   movie they know one at any time there's [TS]

00:41:34   a pause somebody wants to jump in there [TS]

00:41:36   with this line they just thought of as [TS]

00:41:38   opposed to everybody to working together [TS]

00:41:40   to realize that oh wait no all of us in [TS]

00:41:43   character are trying to listen to figure [TS]

00:41:45   out what this guy just said it will be [TS]

00:41:46   funny if none of us get it it can't be [TS]

00:41:49   played it must be play don't even look [TS]

00:41:51   at it can be played [TS]

00:41:53   I wasn't looking at you what a point [TS]

00:41:55   at that point this mess this was never [TS]

00:41:57   been applied everything so it still got [TS]

00:41:59   the old tag on it again again legend it [TS]

00:42:02   right you you do get the sense that [TS]

00:42:03   there are some scenes in this movie that [TS]

00:42:04   it's just let's write down all the [TS]

00:42:06   legendary rock stories like the guy who [TS]

00:42:08   bought if they are and they never played [TS]

00:42:09   it because it was too perfect and could [TS]

00:42:10   never be played and and then just take [TS]

00:42:13   them off and and sprinkle them [TS]

00:42:15   throughout this movie in these little [TS]

00:42:16   tiny vignettes and that scene is so [TS]

00:42:18   great as he goes through it because the [TS]

00:42:22   amps in there in the guitars in there [TS]

00:42:23   just great stuff so we get we get a ends [TS]

00:42:28   cricket bat at one point there's a very [TS]

00:42:30   tough very strange thing we're in faith [TS]

00:42:31   the manager explains about how useful it [TS]

00:42:33   is that he has a quick bat and then [TS]

00:42:35   we're treated to a montage where he [TS]

00:42:36   pushes some things off the table and [TS]

00:42:39   then some actions that old TV any he [TS]

00:42:43   also showed that thing into some poor [TS]

00:42:45   kids neck for she's just sort of gently [TS]

00:42:47   backstage but you as a manager you have [TS]

00:42:51   a cricket bat and and of course because [TS]

00:42:53   we've all seen the outtakes we know we [TS]

00:42:55   know that this is actually supposed to [TS]

00:42:57   be something something much cooler so it [TS]

00:43:00   was supposed to be was that they did it [TS]

00:43:02   hold the lead see this in the same hotel [TS]

00:43:03   room with this scene that was shot like [TS]

00:43:06   to take place right after their they [TS]

00:43:08   hear cups and cakes being played on the [TS]

00:43:10   radio and they're all excited hey we're [TS]

00:43:12   getting airplay and then of course the [TS]

00:43:14   scene ends with Harry Shearer is the DJ [TS]

00:43:16   say oh yeah going all the way back to [TS]

00:43:18   nineteen sixty-eight with the Thames [TS]

00:43:20   with friends with the times but they [TS]

00:43:22   later changed their name to spinal tap [TS]

00:43:23   file them in the where are they now file [TS]

00:43:26   well it's 43 the NPM so they're also [TS]

00:43:28   there they'll get so depressed that e [TS]

00:43:31   ven is trying to get them all excited [TS]

00:43:33   again trying to get some other doldrums [TS]

00:43:35   so this is just hey let's trash the [TS]

00:43:37   hotel rooms and it knocks over the lab [TS]

00:43:38   you finally you wise up like was cricket [TS]

00:43:40   back trashin the hotel room himself [TS]

00:43:42   because the others can't get X can't get [TS]

00:43:44   the energy up to even like break of a [TS]

00:43:46   make their manager to the trashing for [TS]

00:43:48   them then it's this is this is that this [TS]

00:43:52   is where this is the dark turn right [TS]

00:43:55   we're big in showing us a cricket bat [TS]

00:43:57   about the time when the gigs are getting [TS]

00:43:58   cancelled left and right we hear that [TS]

00:44:00   their residing the where that no file [TS]

00:44:01   they take the trip to Graceland which [TS]

00:44:05   leads to a reference that I've got to [TS]

00:44:08   say I you [TS]

00:44:09   news on a on a regular basis which is [TS]

00:44:13   the first off they try to sing [TS]

00:44:14   Heartbreak Hotel in harmony and it's a [TS]

00:44:17   complete disaster because they're [TS]

00:44:19   completely incapable of doing that well [TS]

00:44:22   since my baby left me no no probably [TS]

00:44:26   better if it's in the same key benefit [TS]

00:44:30   what does that go wrong ganas the line [TS]

00:44:38   that kills me everytime is well this [TS]

00:44:40   puts it in perspective that too much [TS]

00:44:42   fucking person I was when the print I [TS]

00:44:47   can't use that all the time it's got all [TS]

00:44:51   the time that's nothing much what is a [TS]

00:44:55   context in which you would use that i [TS]

00:44:57   missed an example what what how would [TS]

00:45:00   you use that is some something bad that [TS]

00:45:03   it that needs to be put in perspective [TS]

00:45:04   80 comes you would be surprised it comes [TS]

00:45:07   up where they're like you know and and [TS]

00:45:09   this puts uh you know this puts the the [TS]

00:45:12   needs of our parents were as they go [TS]

00:45:14   into nursing homes into perspective and [TS]

00:45:15   I say to my motherfucking perspective [TS]

00:45:18   that is how I what every time it works [TS]

00:45:21   it's brilliant boy i'm gonna have to do [TS]

00:45:23   some bleeping out for this episode but [TS]

00:45:25   that's fine [TS]

00:45:25   haha it's rated R movie folks you can't [TS]

00:45:30   hear bad words that you know on that [TS]

00:45:33   point though on that are rated point you [TS]

00:45:35   know watching it again the other day [TS]

00:45:36   it's a tame are real well yeah I mean [TS]

00:45:39   that kind of there's not there's not [TS]

00:45:41   really a lot of nudity there are there [TS]

00:45:44   drugs happening but mostly in the [TS]

00:45:45   background [TS]

00:45:46   yeah there there it's implied right [TS]

00:45:49   groupies and all that but it is it is i [TS]

00:45:51   mean the more most horrific thing in it [TS]

00:45:53   is the sweater that Janine makes for [TS]

00:45:55   David with this planet with rings and [TS]

00:45:57   moons on that is practically x-rated [TS]

00:46:01   because it's so horrible but otherwise [TS]

00:46:03   yeah it's pretty time except when we had [TS]

00:46:05   the there's some now some of the [TS]

00:46:07   outtakes [TS]

00:46:08   oh yeah i mean if you look at some of [TS]

00:46:10   the outtakes and there's some some it's [TS]

00:46:12   a lot more decadent in the outtakes but [TS]

00:46:14   the movie itself is actually there's [TS]

00:46:18   some [TS]

00:46:19   some instances of some bad language but [TS]

00:46:21   for the most part I was kind of [TS]

00:46:22   surprised watching it again in 1983 I [TS]

00:46:26   think the mean obviously the language [TS]

00:46:27   puts it over the top it would even today [TS]

00:46:29   and then probably the all of the implied [TS]

00:46:32   drug use would have been hard for the [TS]

00:46:34   ratings board to swallow in 1983 [TS]

00:46:37   although not by today's two terms it is [TS]

00:46:39   shockingly came because if a movie like [TS]

00:46:43   this made today would presumably have [TS]

00:46:44   more obvious drug use and way more [TS]

00:46:49   nudity and sex then at least implied and [TS]

00:46:53   and hinted at and even shown a little [TS]

00:46:55   bit where is there's really not that's [TS]

00:46:58   not the kind of movie I think maybe the [TS]

00:46:59   makers of this movie were you know tamer [TS]

00:47:01   than their characters would be but and [TS]

00:47:05   they did cut a lot of stuff out to ya [TS]

00:47:08   know or or it's just that wasn't there [TS]

00:47:10   it's not there today and it might not [TS]

00:47:12   have been as money and i'll also i think [TS]

00:47:14   that this this is why the commentary [TS]

00:47:16   track is so good because you know you [TS]

00:47:18   can see how much they thought out every [TS]

00:47:21   single sort of thing to make it today [TS]

00:47:22   they knew they were only workers comedy [TS]

00:47:24   if it seem like this could really be [TS]

00:47:25   happening and so I think that was [TS]

00:47:27   Michael McCann who was talking about [TS]

00:47:28   things like drug use the same we decided [TS]

00:47:30   that their problem there's probably [TS]

00:47:32   going to be some drug use but they would [TS]

00:47:34   be shrewd enough to know that there are [TS]

00:47:36   things I should not be doing on camera [TS]

00:47:38   right and so that's why this document [TS]

00:47:40   would never cat catch them doing [TS]

00:47:41   something that's a little bit too out [TS]

00:47:43   there right right i would imagine a [TS]

00:47:45   modern version of this there would be a [TS]

00:47:46   little more of a you know Brody Brody [TS]

00:47:49   discovered with her her shirt off or [TS]

00:47:52   something like that that would be to [TS]

00:47:53   ously present but but you're right i [TS]

00:47:57   mean in the documentary concede one of [TS]

00:48:00   the tricks and obviously christopher [TS]

00:48:01   guest went on to make a series of more [TS]

00:48:04   documentary comedies fake documentary [TS]

00:48:06   comedies you eat part of the conceit is [TS]

00:48:09   that these are subjects that know [TS]

00:48:11   they're being filmed and they behave [TS]

00:48:13   accordingly so um I wanna let's see what [TS]

00:48:18   else is on my list here I wanted to talk [TS]

00:48:20   for a second about Harry Shearer in [TS]

00:48:23   general because he doesn't get as much [TS]

00:48:24   notice and yet does some wonderful work [TS]

00:48:26   as the befuddled Derek smalls who is the [TS]

00:48:29   lukewarm water to the fire of Nigel in [TS]

00:48:31   the ice and [TS]

00:48:32   David and there is no point i think that [TS]

00:48:35   is greater for harry shearer than the [TS]

00:48:37   rock-and-roll creation scene which is [TS]

00:48:39   also very prog-rock another prog-rock [TS]

00:48:41   number where they come they emerge from [TS]

00:48:43   pods and Harry Shearer spent the entire [TS]

00:48:45   number trying to escape from his pod as [TS]

00:48:48   a roadie hammers on it and brings a [TS]

00:48:50   blowtorch and he's still playing his [TS]

00:48:52   part as this all happens right and you [TS]

00:48:55   know Harry Shearer is great in this it's [TS]

00:48:57   such a strange part the bass player [TS]

00:48:58   always kind of a peculiar part of a band [TS]

00:49:01   i remember in that the movie I like a [TS]

00:49:03   lot that thing you do you know which [TS]

00:49:07   again is two characters with a in a band [TS]

00:49:09   who got a creative conflict and then [TS]

00:49:11   there's the bass player and he lives on [TS]

00:49:12   another planet and and Harry Shearer in [TS]

00:49:15   this movie is kind of like that but but [TS]

00:49:17   so great and the scene where he's stuck [TS]

00:49:19   in a pod is a is a classic because he's [TS]

00:49:21   trying to keep it together and he [TS]

00:49:23   finally emerges victorious just as they [TS]

00:49:25   leave the stage and then he gets his arm [TS]

00:49:27   caught in it as he tries to go back it's [TS]

00:49:30   great it's just a wonderful scene and in [TS]

00:49:32   general I think just a great performance [TS]

00:49:34   by Kerry sure yeah well the other great [TS]

00:49:37   thing about sharing this whole thing is [TS]

00:49:38   the way he plays the bass he plays the [TS]

00:49:40   bass one-handed and he's constantly [TS]

00:49:42   throwing his hands in the air and and [TS]

00:49:44   but the other scene i love with him is [TS]

00:49:49   right after the after the Stonehenge [TS]

00:49:54   debacle and yes you know in in and [TS]

00:49:58   they're having this intense band meeting [TS]

00:50:00   and and even blows up with them and [TS]

00:50:02   quits and a half and tells them all you [TS]

00:50:05   know and and videos explaining his job [TS]

00:50:08   and you know how hard it is to find [TS]

00:50:10   mandolin strings in Houston whatever and [TS]

00:50:12   and and he storms out of the room and [TS]

00:50:14   and and in Derek smalls asks a practical [TS]

00:50:17   question about masks practical question [TS]

00:50:20   this point what we're doing stonehedge [TS]

00:50:23   tomorrow now we're not doing fucking [TS]

00:50:25   Stonehenge the but then but then look at [TS]

00:50:30   look at the look on his face after that [TS]

00:50:32   he kind of raises his eyebrows and it's [TS]

00:50:36   sort of like okay well that goes on that [TS]

00:50:38   was onto the scene where they were [TS]

00:50:39   Janine hands out the horoscopes right [TS]

00:50:41   and he's like well like I defense i like [TS]

00:50:43   my selfish and he's just going with each [TS]

00:50:45   whatever whatever he's going with it we [TS]

00:50:48   should talk to you since you mentioned [TS]

00:50:49   in quitting this is the may be as close [TS]

00:50:54   to a plotline is this movie gets which [TS]

00:50:55   is Janine comes and it we have our yoko [TS]

00:50:59   ono moment where nigel is a enjoying [TS]

00:51:03   touring with his friend David and then [TS]

00:51:05   Janine comes and ruins everything [TS]

00:51:08   because she's got she takes him away and [TS]

00:51:10   she's got ideas about costumes and she [TS]

00:51:13   makes this awful sweatshirt for him and [TS]

00:51:15   she's she wants to be the co-manager of [TS]

00:51:17   the band which leads to even quitting [TS]

00:51:19   and then she wants to do all their [TS]

00:51:20   horoscopes while she takes them to their [TS]

00:51:22   their poor dated in Cleveland Janine is [TS]

00:51:25   interesting right because she is she is [TS]

00:51:28   she just wants to help but she is no she [TS]

00:51:32   doesn't she's awful and she's dressed in [TS]

00:51:35   the perfect awful nineteen eighties [TS]

00:51:38   regalia and she's got her her horoscopes [TS]

00:51:41   and her bad ideas and it's such a [TS]

00:51:46   fantastic train wreck and the worst part [TS]

00:51:48   is that she separates david from Nigel [TS]

00:51:50   which causes the whole thing because it [TS]

00:51:53   goes again if they're they want to be 20 [TS]

00:51:56   years old they weren't married when [TS]

00:51:57   there are 20 if you put introduce [TS]

00:51:59   anything into this equation that wasn't [TS]

00:52:01   there when they were 20 everything falls [TS]

00:52:03   apart and also she she is that Yoko the [TS]

00:52:06   the it was great that you have a first [TS]

00:52:09   the first date in which she's like Jesus [TS]

00:52:12   on the tourism manager where is she [TS]

00:52:14   she's on the stage next to David st. [TS]

00:52:16   Hubbins with the tambourine of that is [TS]

00:52:19   so fantastic that well as they're doing [TS]

00:52:21   they're terrible [TS]

00:52:22   they're they're terrible attempt to [TS]

00:52:24   replace Nigel and she's got the [TS]

00:52:26   tambourine because that was really what [TS]

00:52:28   it was all about and you see any sin you [TS]

00:52:30   see the tension there from the start she [TS]

00:52:33   makes her first appearance on the tour [TS]

00:52:35   bus and that makes me want to call out [TS]

00:52:37   another that this is a great movie for [TS]

00:52:40   cameos just like little performances by [TS]

00:52:42   people that hey look there's Paul [TS]

00:52:43   Shaffer Hey look Bruno Kirby [TS]

00:52:45   Hey look his Dana Carvey there in the [TS]

00:52:47   tour bus the computer that just the [TS]

00:52:49   computer games of the tour bus is a is a [TS]

00:52:52   Tandy color computer with a chiclet [TS]

00:52:54   keyboard playing a version [TS]

00:52:56   another version of missile command [TS]

00:52:58   called subcommand so how many planets [TS]

00:53:01   have you destroyed there is cooked quite [TS]

00:53:03   amazing this video magic another another [TS]

00:53:08   wire that comes up in my in my head like [TS]

00:53:11   everytime everytime like a plug [TS]

00:53:13   something and there's something that's [TS]

00:53:14   like a really nice like graphic display [TS]

00:53:16   like a great new visualizer in itunes [TS]

00:53:18   boys say quite amazing this video magic [TS]

00:53:21   you know the first time we see Janine is [TS]

00:53:24   when the album is delivered and she [TS]

00:53:26   immediately undercuts everything that he [TS]

00:53:28   is doing and says it's terrible and and [TS]

00:53:30   you know this album cover should never [TS]

00:53:31   have been done and and and pushes [TS]

00:53:33   everybody's buttons until the band is [TS]

00:53:35   kind of completely destroyed and of [TS]

00:53:38   course it'sit's that's the payback at [TS]

00:53:40   the end when they go to japan on you [TS]

00:53:43   know after en ask them to reunite and [TS]

00:53:46   there's that last wonderful shot where [TS]

00:53:48   ian is holding a script bat and smiling [TS]

00:53:51   smugly as as Janine is rolling her eyes [TS]

00:53:55   and looking disgusted in the audience [TS]

00:53:57   and just like reading normal she's not [TS]

00:53:59   part of this beautiful but youyou it's [TS]

00:54:01   the there is a backstory there cuz [TS]

00:54:03   remember the first time she's mentioned [TS]

00:54:05   as when she calls she calls davidson [TS]

00:54:08   happens at the hotel after that in the [TS]

00:54:10   depressing scene after the after the the [TS]

00:54:12   radio play and that's when he finds out [TS]

00:54:14   all your that's not 33 that window [TS]

00:54:17   display always just great now that's [TS]

00:54:18   great perfect my life's just been just [TS]

00:54:21   remind night and talk stealth it tells [TS]

00:54:24   tells my talk about this that Jade come [TS]

00:54:26   with us that while she's she's coming to [TS]

00:54:29   drop off some stuff and then leave [TS]

00:54:30   no no she's gonna be coming with us like [TS]

00:54:32   and just in time too because she told me [TS]

00:54:35   that my virginity Larry sounded fat so [TS]

00:54:37   you can be bringing any since it is it [TS]

00:54:40   is i mean that the relationship between [TS]

00:54:42   David Nigel i mean this is this is these [TS]

00:54:45   guys have been together since they were [TS]

00:54:47   little kids and you know you can see on [TS]

00:54:50   on Nigel's face when when that all [TS]

00:54:52   happens that that he's not interested in [TS]

00:54:55   Jenin he easy [TS]

00:54:57   he's out with his buddy doing the tour [TS]

00:54:59   they are they are a duo here and with [TS]

00:55:02   her in the way it doesn't work it's it's [TS]

00:55:05   your fucking life [TS]

00:55:07   it's my life is too fucking one of the [TS]

00:55:09   Akshay's she's not get the car fucking [TS]

00:55:15   comments and I 00 so great we haven't [TS]

00:55:19   talked about a fantastic seen the end i [TS]

00:55:24   mentioned earlier I saw this movie on [TS]

00:55:25   video when i was home I think for the [TS]

00:55:28   summer from college and i mention that i [TS]

00:55:32   ended up on the floor crying pounding [TS]

00:55:35   the floor and had to pause the movie [TS]

00:55:36   because i couldn't I i had to get myself [TS]

00:55:39   together the seen that made me do that [TS]

00:55:41   is the scene where Nigel plays a [TS]

00:55:44   beautiful piano number after Marty [TS]

00:55:46   Bergey and it's in d minor the saddest [TS]

00:55:51   at ease all keys and uh it's a cross [TS]

00:55:57   between a Mozart and Bach which we call [TS]

00:56:00   it tomorrow really [TS]

00:56:02   but the thing that kills me is he plays [TS]

00:56:04   this beautiful sad little piano piece [TS]

00:56:06   and Marty Bergey says at the end well [TS]

00:56:08   what's it called [TS]

00:56:09   he says well I i call it lick my love [TS]

00:56:11   pump 15 minutes [TS]

00:56:14   I think I couldn't stop laughing at that [TS]

00:56:17   joke couldn't just amazing i survived [TS]

00:56:22   frankly such a great such a great thing [TS]

00:56:26   and a and again that's Christopher Guest [TS]

00:56:28   playing the piano himself and you know [TS]

00:56:29   it's got its got that whole realism and [TS]

00:56:31   we've built up who nigel is so we're [TS]

00:56:33   surprised at this turn in his character [TS]

00:56:36   and see that he's got actually a little [TS]

00:56:38   bit of musical talent and then bang so [TS]

00:56:42   great [TS]

00:56:43   what else do we have already fuckin we [TS]

00:56:46   can mention you mention Paul Shaffer is [TS]

00:56:47   in this they go to the album signing and [TS]

00:56:49   there's nobody there and already fuckin [TS]

00:56:50   from polymer records A&R in Cleveland [TS]

00:56:53   kick my ass kicked my ass that we [TS]

00:56:56   saturated we oversaturated so as [TS]

00:56:59   somebody and and and you know and I know [TS]

00:57:01   you've done is as somebody who has done [TS]

00:57:02   public speaking before and and has done [TS]

00:57:06   like appearances at events and things [TS]

00:57:08   the what first time i watch this I've [TS]

00:57:11   never done anything like that you know [TS]

00:57:13   or at least not enough to have that have [TS]

00:57:14   it be something that resonated with me [TS]

00:57:16   this time when i watch the movie I'm [TS]

00:57:18   like oh my god that is that is my worst [TS]

00:57:20   nightmare that is my fear it's like [TS]

00:57:23   all right i'm gonna show up you want me [TS]

00:57:25   to come speak i'm going to fly halfway [TS]

00:57:27   across the country and I'm gonna go and [TS]

00:57:28   you said you think you okay i'll go and [TS]

00:57:31   do my thing and you get there and [TS]

00:57:32   there's like two guys anything I came [TS]

00:57:35   all this way for a hole you know three [TS]

00:57:37   days to get here and all of this and [TS]

00:57:38   you're paid for my room and nobody shows [TS]

00:57:42   up and and here it is this is the [TS]

00:57:43   nightmare [TS]

00:57:44   nobody nobody wants to buy smell the [TS]

00:57:48   glove for 599 by the way if you notice [TS]

00:57:51   it's 599 yes I i had exactly that [TS]

00:57:54   experienced horse was trying to produce [TS]

00:57:57   like a show that was kinda like going to [TS]

00:57:59   be like like see like I'm a touring [TS]

00:58:01   version of CES and they got david pogue [TS]

00:58:04   they got me they got like a whole bunch [TS]

00:58:06   of huge names like oh we were in like [TS]

00:58:09   really big paper paper paper play [TS]

00:58:11   contracts and like mine involved how [TS]

00:58:12   many days hotel on to the feet and so [TS]

00:58:15   first time in I gotta go I gotta I gotta [TS]

00:58:19   talk about this because huge huge [TS]

00:58:22   convention center with maybe a hundred [TS]

00:58:26   people coming [TS]

00:58:27   yeah they made they made all these [TS]

00:58:29   convinced they could like just cancel it [TS]

00:58:31   so we all flew out there [TS]

00:58:32   I spoke to their there's a I spoke to [TS]

00:58:35   two people i remember that quite clearly [TS]

00:58:37   and I had I had and because this is [TS]

00:58:39   going to be like a tour sort of thing [TS]

00:58:41   that actually like spend a lot of time [TS]

00:58:42   putting together a very complicated like [TS]

00:58:44   our long slide deck and then I suddenly [TS]

00:58:46   remember the best piece of speaking [TS]

00:58:48   advise anybody ever given me that you [TS]

00:58:50   would never take the stage have twenty [TS]

00:58:52   dollars in your pocket count the number [TS]

00:58:53   of people there if there's enough people [TS]

00:58:55   that you can just take all them out [TS]

00:58:56   together and by the metre beer do that [TS]

00:58:58   instead of going to slide deck but yes [TS]

00:59:00   and and there are there are these [TS]

00:59:03   already fuckin times through [TS]

00:59:04   redistricting will you just stop [TS]

00:59:06   apologizing [TS]

00:59:07   maybe it'd be almost ok if you just said [TS]

00:59:10   okay no one showed up [TS]

00:59:11   oh well oh oh I get I'm get the chills [TS]

00:59:15   because this I mean mrs. happened [TS]

00:59:16   this is not happening me to the point of [TS]

00:59:18   it being two people but it's happened to [TS]

00:59:20   me where where we've been on a panel [TS]

00:59:23   that outnumbered the audience that's not [TS]

00:59:26   why don't we take you one on one you [TS]

00:59:28   know we'll do it just everybody pick one [TS]

00:59:30   of us and we'll go have a beer and yea [TS]

00:59:33   right because because you know that was [TS]

00:59:36   at least we did [TS]

00:59:37   better than that up then that record [TS]

00:59:38   signing nobody goes a record-setting [TS]

00:59:40   expect like we just see if we saturate [TS]

00:59:43   oversaturated I it [TS]

00:59:46   that's not my timing was right at the [TS]

00:59:48   time you're a terrible timing a terrible [TS]

00:59:49   time a terrible time terrible timing and [TS]

00:59:51   also you know you and you know that Paul [TS]

00:59:54   Shaffer like you it was even it was 82 [TS]

00:59:56   but you know that he's been like like [TS]

00:59:58   rock-and-roll music businesses like [TS]

00:59:58   rock-and-roll music businesses like [TS]

01:00:00   session players a studio player for like [TS]

01:00:01   ten years you know that he was basing [TS]

01:00:03   that off of a hundred already fuckin [TS]

01:00:05   that he knows personally for exactly [TS]

01:00:08   like that at this point Paul Shaffer was [TS]

01:00:10   known a knot at not as david letterman's [TS]

01:00:13   family because that was on the Letterman [TS]

01:00:15   Show started in February of 82 but but [TS]

01:00:17   as a he made appearances in the band on [TS]

01:00:20   saturday night live including some some [TS]

01:00:22   some bits some sketches about the music [TS]

01:00:24   industry so you know that's so that's [TS]

01:00:26   why they plucked him for this for this [TS]

01:00:28   part plus he's really funny [TS]

01:00:30   it's a great bit and anything check out [TS]

01:00:33   like every bit of his his costume is [TS]

01:00:35   perfect where you know the course he [TS]

01:00:37   went out he made sure that he bought [TS]

01:00:38   like a spinal tap t-shirt and a spinal [TS]

01:00:40   tap satin tour jacket he wants to make [TS]

01:00:42   sure the bad knows that he's a fan of [TS]

01:00:43   them because you have a t-shirt [TS]

01:00:45   oh god perfect it's so great so that [TS]

01:00:50   they're in cleveland so we have to at [TS]

01:00:51   least say the extended joke where [TS]

01:00:54   they're they can't find the stage which [TS]

01:00:56   is again apparently based on based on [TS]

01:00:59   real events for bands where they've left [TS]

01:01:02   to go out to the stage and been an able [TS]

01:01:04   to find it and they find this wonderful [TS]

01:01:05   guy in a boiler room who tries to give [TS]

01:01:07   them very complicated directions and [TS]

01:01:09   they they not in and say rock and roll [TS]

01:01:12   and they leave and they end up right [TS]

01:01:13   back at the guy again [TS]

01:01:15   yep hi the other was based on a document [TS]

01:01:17   document in there in the commentaries [TS]

01:01:19   are talking about a documentary which [TS]

01:01:20   that is like that is exactly what [TS]

01:01:22   happens or at least this guy's walking [TS]

01:01:23   around backstage macy's a door opens the [TS]

01:01:26   door he finds himself like on a tennis [TS]

01:01:27   court like that seems to be attached [TS]

01:01:30   somewhere to the stage complex and just [TS]

01:01:33   bewildered that how the hell did I went [TS]

01:01:34   up in a tennis court [TS]

01:01:35   the guy in the boiler room also has a [TS]

01:01:37   great line where where it's you'll see a [TS]

01:01:38   door that says authorized personnel only [TS]

01:01:41   you're authorized right you've got to [TS]

01:01:43   you've got the instrument ago [TS]

01:01:45   that's wrong with the bathroom hello [TS]

01:01:47   Cleveland and it is actually Cleveland [TS]

01:01:50   which is nice because they could also [TS]

01:01:52   that's a famous thing that isn't in this [TS]

01:01:54   move in this movie where bands have said [TS]

01:01:56   hello to the wrongs gotten food at uh we [TS]

01:02:01   talked about we talked about Janine [TS]

01:02:03   because this is the point the movie [TS]

01:02:04   where she says that she feels the album [TS]

01:02:05   was mixed all wrong and should have been [TS]

01:02:06   used [TS]

01:02:07   they should use EE and then and that [TS]

01:02:10   what drives in i think is this [TS]

01:02:13   don't hinge incident so Stonehenge [TS]

01:02:15   famous nigel wright's down on a piece of [TS]

01:02:18   paper a Stonehenge statue and makes the [TS]

01:02:22   mistake of using the to tick marks four [TS]

01:02:24   inches instead of one tick mark 4 feet a [TS]

01:02:27   very esoteric bit to be used in a comedy [TS]

01:02:31   routine and yet so great because and [TS]

01:02:35   speaking of cameos Anjelica Huston as [TS]

01:02:37   the sculptor presents en with the [TS]

01:02:39   16-inch statue and he's a gas right and [TS]

01:02:43   we cut away and what I find interesting [TS]

01:02:45   about that scene I mean it's hilarious [TS]

01:02:47   right that it comes down in the the [TS]

01:02:49   dwarf is in danger of crushing the [TS]

01:02:51   statue only you you left out one of my [TS]

01:02:54   friends one of my favorite lines and [TS]

01:02:57   Justin met in my phone my favorite [TS]

01:03:00   movies which is just what I was given [TS]

01:03:02   this this sketch this napkin [TS]

01:03:04   fuck this fuck the napkin so i I just I [TS]

01:03:09   I don't want it I haven't done it yet I [TS]

01:03:11   haven't done it but I should do a google [TS]

01:03:12   search right now there must be on [TS]

01:03:14   alcohol and local bands called up on the [TS]

01:03:16   napkin so so if there isn't that [TS]

01:03:19   somebody should start a band call it [TS]

01:03:21   that and i will buy their tenancy p so [TS]

01:03:24   it's great as we see in being so furious [TS]

01:03:26   about this and we think well he was [TS]

01:03:27   going to do something about it right but [TS]

01:03:28   he doesn't know which sets us up for the [TS]

01:03:30   shock of it not being fixed and coming [TS]

01:03:32   down but it also interesting because [TS]

01:03:34   this is how this is even stick it out [TS]

01:03:36   this is where he basically is so fed up [TS]

01:03:38   but he's gonna go he decides to be a [TS]

01:03:40   jerk about it he looks on with glee as [TS]

01:03:42   this happens he knows this good is gonna [TS]

01:03:44   happen and remember he he has the option [TS]

01:03:46   of not putting that thing I stay right [TS]

01:03:48   but he goes with anything anything that [TS]

01:03:50   under on every other point I think that [TS]

01:03:53   he's like relishing the thought of you [TS]

01:03:54   look I've got the napkin that says that [TS]

01:03:56   i do what you guys tell me if this [TS]

01:03:58   tourist disasters because i'm doing what [TS]

01:04:01   you're telling me to do [TS]

01:04:02   yeah yeah he decides that he's going to [TS]

01:04:04   be a jerk he's gonna set it all up [TS]

01:04:07   he's going to refuse to take [TS]

01:04:08   responsibility he's gonna blame it on [TS]

01:04:09   you wrote it on the UH napkin wrong I'm [TS]

01:04:12   just here to do what you tell me right [TS]

01:04:13   and that nothing with all that it's any [TS]

01:04:16   cook on the other way and that its I did [TS]

01:04:17   but not just while you're not as [TS]

01:04:19   confused as knowledge allow you owe my [TS]

01:04:23   god [TS]

01:04:24   and that's how I mean that's really [TS]

01:04:25   began for him [TS]

01:04:26   for for him and he goes up it's [TS]

01:04:28   fascinating that that's that's that at [TS]

01:04:30   that moment in between in the gaps the [TS]

01:04:32   way the way the editing works where you [TS]

01:04:33   see him and he is outraged he's acting [TS]

01:04:35   like a good manager and then better [TS]

01:04:38   because he's just you can't take it [TS]

01:04:40   anymore he realizes there's nothing you [TS]

01:04:42   can do and these people are idiots or [TS]

01:04:45   maybe he just thinks well make the best [TS]

01:04:46   of it and see what happens [TS]

01:04:47   whatever it is he make some decisions [TS]

01:04:51   and then refuses to take any [TS]

01:04:52   responsibility for those decisions after [TS]

01:04:55   Stonehenge the very tiniest own [TS]

01:04:57   interests you and you know what can you [TS]

01:04:59   say about that actual bit is it is one [TS]

01:05:02   of the great [TS]

01:05:03   I visual jokes of uh of of movies i [TS]

01:05:08   think the lowering of the incredible [TS]

01:05:10   night i first heard about this movie [TS]

01:05:12   actually the first thing I heard about [TS]

01:05:13   it was Stonehenge in college when people [TS]

01:05:16   were talking about this movie that I had [TS]

01:05:17   seen and it was all about the scene [TS]

01:05:19   where the Stonehenge they're like I [TS]

01:05:21   didn't even know what they were talking [TS]

01:05:22   about it first was like a Stonehenge [TS]

01:05:23   haha like what about stone inspect well [TS]

01:05:26   it's tiny and they'd answer [TS]

01:05:28   oh ok and and that's what stuck with [TS]

01:05:31   people because it's such a great visual [TS]

01:05:32   joke so great you know to this day to [TS]

01:05:35   this day I still don't know who the [TS]

01:05:39   Druids were or what did not have a cost [TS]

01:05:44   or what they were doing little niggas he [TS]

01:05:48   lives on you within the living room [TS]

01:05:51   instead of stone and anything and you [TS]

01:05:53   just it's it's almost as if Nigel is now [TS]

01:05:55   completely did this moment is dis [TS]

01:05:57   associated with reality because inside [TS]

01:06:00   his mind this is a 12,000 seal arena [TS]

01:06:03   everybody is mmmm mesmerized their minds [TS]

01:06:07   are blown by this mystical creation that [TS]

01:06:10   he has put on the stage and even if they [TS]

01:06:12   had managed to produce an 18-foot high [TS]

01:06:14   stone henge monument it would only have [TS]

01:06:16   made the thing look even said well that [TS]

01:06:18   they'll be later said it's this Genesis [TS]

01:06:20   it's this Genesis moment right but where [TS]

01:06:22   it's this prog rock [TS]

01:06:24   oh I'm wearing out you know with peter [TS]

01:06:25   gabriel is like I'm wearing of foxes [TS]

01:06:27   head on my head and I made up like what [TS]

01:06:30   huh [TS]

01:06:31   but but what is great about the song [TS]

01:06:33   Stonehenge is that it is so fantastic in [TS]

01:06:38   its a [TS]

01:06:39   nonsensical nature it is literally like [TS]

01:06:42   everything you that you think is [TS]

01:06:45   historically something that you could [TS]

01:06:47   throw in there but none of it is [TS]

01:06:49   actually right and it's all just short [TS]

01:06:51   of shuffled in and you know they're the [TS]

01:06:53   demons and the Banshees the and may do [TS]

01:06:56   that as well and have children dance to [TS]

01:06:59   the pipes of pan and then the bridge is [TS]

01:07:02   is just as nonsensical because it's like [TS]

01:07:04   a romantic bridge and come you my love [TS]

01:07:07   won't you take my hand we'll go back in [TS]

01:07:09   time to this mystic land it is so [TS]

01:07:11   fantastic in how terrible it is it's [TS]

01:07:14   amazing it is it's like if you read the [TS]

01:07:17   lyrics if you think about Stonehenge it [TS]

01:07:19   is it is a tour de force of terribleness [TS]

01:07:22   it's like it you know what it is it's [TS]

01:07:25   like a Ronnie James Dio so I've heard [TS]

01:07:28   some writing i love drawing change do [TS]

01:07:30   but but those layers some of his lyrics [TS]

01:07:32   for that mean for the dude op with the [TS]

01:07:34   dewdrops crimes for God's sake tempo it [TS]

01:07:39   does take us it takes us right back to [TS]

01:07:42   being 14 years old the things you think [TS]

01:07:44   of this is a clever mind blowing awesome [TS]

01:07:46   thing that anybody has ever written and [TS]

01:07:49   i have written it i can't wait to put [TS]

01:07:52   this in front of an audience so they [TS]

01:07:53   will acknowledge what a genius I already [TS]

01:07:56   mean the Druids didn't build Stonehenge [TS]

01:07:57   that's one of the actors who Christopher [TS]

01:08:02   Guest used in many of his later [TS]

01:08:06   mockumentaries that he made is Fred [TS]

01:08:08   Willard who makes a wonderful appearance [TS]

01:08:10   here where the the gig in seattle gets [TS]

01:08:12   cancelled but they get scheduled on an [TS]

01:08:14   airbase and this is the moment where [TS]

01:08:16   Nigel can't take anymore [TS]

01:08:18   any-any walks off but this this again is [TS]

01:08:20   a wonderful little collect collection of [TS]

01:08:22   scenes and Fred Willard has this great [TS]

01:08:23   line about how he's a big fan and [TS]

01:08:26   they're all big fans of your work and [TS]

01:08:28   your albums i speak not of you in [TS]

01:08:31   specific but Moore the general john ruan [TS]

01:08:33   of rock-and-roll what are we getting [TS]

01:08:38   into here as it with this is out let me [TS]

01:08:41   let me let you know [TS]

01:08:42   let me tell you what this is all about [TS]

01:08:43   this is our monthly at ease weekend in [TS]

01:08:46   which we all get to sort of let our hair [TS]

01:08:48   down I notice that you kind of got ahead [TS]

01:08:49   army I let my girl [TS]

01:08:51   we do ours but now i would like to get [TS]

01:08:55   the music started at oso 1500 hours and [TS]

01:08:59   then if you could wrap it up bio 1530 [TS]

01:09:02   hours 1500 hours from now that's about [TS]

01:09:05   14 hours and alli can play a couple slow [TS]

01:09:09   song so we can dance to it cut smash cut [TS]

01:09:11   to sex farm working on a sex ball trying [TS]

01:09:16   to raise some hollow again the lyrics he [TS]

01:09:19   listened to the lyrics spoken through [TS]

01:09:20   your bday feels leaving my eyes see that [TS]

01:09:25   my pitchfork poking your hey it's it's a [TS]

01:09:30   very sophisticated take on sex what [TS]

01:09:34   happens to be on a farm [TS]

01:09:36   yeah ring the bell there you go [TS]

01:09:39   it is it is again I'm praising these [TS]

01:09:42   songs for for how terrible their sex [TS]

01:09:44   farm is not it's not in the high level [TS]

01:09:47   of terrible missives of Stonehenge [TS]

01:09:49   Stonehenge is so ambitiously terrible [TS]

01:09:51   you know but again they're trying to [TS]

01:09:54   cover the gamut of terrible song right [TS]

01:09:55   here and sex farmers so delightfully [TS]

01:09:57   adolescent and attempting to make sexual [TS]

01:10:01   clever sexual references that are not [TS]

01:10:05   remotely clever it's so great [TS]

01:10:08   it's so great and so awful at the same [TS]

01:10:10   time and that's again something I said [TS]

01:10:12   at the beginning one of the reasons that [TS]

01:10:14   this movie works and I think we've wiped [TS]

01:10:15   some people thought that it was real [TS]

01:10:17   is that the music performances are real [TS]

01:10:19   and they made sure that the in the [TS]

01:10:20   commentary tracks and the documentaries [TS]

01:10:22   you can the real documentary about the [TS]

01:10:24   movie you can see they tried to get all [TS]

01:10:26   of the musicianship right they were [TS]

01:10:28   really upset if the fingering on the [TS]

01:10:29   guitar was not matching what they were [TS]

01:10:32   playing so it feels real and to have [TS]

01:10:35   these songs be fully realized and [TS]

01:10:38   terrible is AI think that's one of the [TS]

01:10:41   things that really holds the movie [TS]

01:10:42   together there are lots of funny jokes [TS]

01:10:44   but the fact that this music is there [TS]

01:10:45   and real and they commit to it fully [TS]

01:10:49   really makes it and I was reminded that [TS]

01:10:52   as I laughed and laughed again at the [TS]

01:10:54   the song that I've heard a million times [TS]

01:10:55   sex farm but when you're in the moment [TS]

01:10:57   it is so terrible it's great [TS]

01:11:00   yeah and the context of any at the air [TS]

01:11:01   force base with the people gasp looking [TS]

01:11:04   on very well [TS]

01:11:05   the springtime for Hitler moment there [TS]

01:11:07   too as they watch this performance but [TS]

01:11:09   see how to see how far they went in to [TS]

01:11:11   make this happen [TS]

01:11:12   there are two scenes that preceded it [TS]

01:11:14   that while he's giving the demo while [TS]

01:11:16   the natural toughness give it showing [TS]

01:11:17   off his guitar collection he has to show [TS]

01:11:20   off folders my cuz my radio Mike's like [TS]

01:11:22   a walk with then in another scene like [TS]

01:11:24   this the same scene in which he finds [TS]

01:11:26   out the Janine is coming to visit [TS]

01:11:28   he has to be seen playing the guitar the [TS]

01:11:30   winds up smashing on stage so that today [TS]

01:11:32   with we established that in the [TS]

01:11:34   continuity and of course the one is [TS]

01:11:36   probably the one guitar that we've seen [TS]

01:11:38   so far that is not a really expensive [TS]

01:11:40   really great guitar like but it's not [TS]

01:11:42   going to be less paul gaultier i laughed [TS]

01:11:44   at the as cheap guitar serious laughter [TS]

01:11:46   the explain explanation of a wireless [TS]

01:11:49   guitar that it is not connected to [TS]

01:11:50   anything it's just contributes biwi [TS]

01:11:52   wireless [TS]

01:11:53   ya know what I'm pretty much all like [TS]

01:11:55   that now it's got a funny but at the [TS]

01:11:57   time ago this is the wireless guitar [TS]

01:11:58   why do you have that well we got a gag [TS]

01:12:00   where where the Air Force signals come [TS]

01:12:03   in and then he smashes the guitar but [TS]

01:12:05   that's it [TS]

01:12:06   so so and that's the end of spinal tap [TS]

01:12:09   right they may he quits the band and [TS]

01:12:13   David would be sure to be much more [TS]

01:12:16   upset if he wasn't under such heavy [TS]

01:12:17   sedation it's being I'll just you know [TS]

01:12:21   look at all the people who's been in and [TS]

01:12:24   out to this band I mean stopping papes [TS]

01:12:27   what why and then started when you know [TS]

01:12:29   Marty Marty Bergey you don't have [TS]

01:12:31   anything you can't be comparing him to [TS]

01:12:34   those other ppl 437 people have been [TS]

01:12:37   it's been over the years I just so we we [TS]

01:12:42   get the we get the trip to stockton [TS]

01:12:43   california to the puppet show and spinal [TS]

01:12:46   tap which is which is a great with which [TS]

01:12:49   is a great moment because and my wife [TS]

01:12:51   noticed it and pointed out my and I [TS]

01:12:54   think it's a great point that this movie [TS]

01:12:56   is committed enough to the realism of [TS]

01:12:58   being in a band that they go over the [TS]

01:13:00   set list and realize there's almost [TS]

01:13:01   nothing they can play electric cozy the [TS]

01:13:04   other because Nigel wrote it or because [TS]

01:13:06   they need Nigel to play on it and in [TS]

01:13:08   fact when we see them in la at the end [TS]

01:13:10   in their last tour for tonight I'm gonna [TS]

01:13:12   rock you tonight Harry Shearer is [TS]

01:13:14   singing harmony part and he's terrible [TS]

01:13:16   and and so [TS]

01:13:19   that even there we have the realism of [TS]

01:13:21   the fact that this is a band that is not [TS]

01:13:23   actually capable of functioning without [TS]

01:13:25   without Nigel so they do the jazz [TS]

01:13:27   odyssey and the reformation of spiders [TS]

01:13:29   oh there's a notice it was only [TS]

01:13:31   certainly was also get there they're not [TS]

01:13:33   in the present or not in the now so when [TS]

01:13:35   they say well you know that leaves us [TS]

01:13:37   for the cozy 12 minutes well you know [TS]

01:13:38   we're gonna have to do is all the [TS]

01:13:40   schedule to see and then day events in [TS]

01:13:42   Heaven's a reaction is has two is not [TS]

01:13:44   like in reality it's like we can't play [TS]

01:13:47   a 22-minute like jazz jazz jazz fusion [TS]

01:13:50   from the festival crowd is just simply [TS]

01:13:52   don't look like no you're in a puppet [TS]

01:13:54   show theatre you're not an Aston free [TS]

01:13:56   that's what yeah it's and it's um [TS]

01:13:59   and yet the the 30 hardcore spinal tap [TS]

01:14:02   fans who have come to see them then boo [TS]

01:14:04   them and there's the great shot of the [TS]

01:14:05   guy putting his thumb down [TS]

01:14:07   yeah that's my favorite little thing [TS]

01:14:09   because they betrayed spinal tap at that [TS]

01:14:12   point even the fans are against this new [TS]

01:14:14   direction for it hold it and rub my [TS]

01:14:19   favorite throwaway lines the entire [TS]

01:14:20   thing I'm gonna cut into that seem like [TS]

01:14:22   they're preparing the setlist like the [TS]

01:14:24   makers a I've got this mendocino rocket [TS]

01:14:27   fuel yeah and I I had no idea what [TS]

01:14:32   mendocino rocket fuel could possibly be [TS]

01:14:34   I I imagine it was a drug reference but [TS]

01:14:37   you're witnessing spinal tap mock to the [TS]

01:14:40   riba these are only taking on jamboree [TS]

01:14:42   that's so bad so they end at the end of [TS]

01:14:45   end of the tour party which seems [TS]

01:14:47   awfully nice given what we've seen up to [TS]

01:14:50   now you get the sense that it was [TS]

01:14:51   probably schedule in advance and there's [TS]

01:14:54   actually a line where somebody says I'm [TS]

01:14:56   kind of surprised that you know people [TS]

01:14:58   turned out for this up here on a rooftop [TS]

01:15:01   in LA and and and then a Nigel appears [TS]

01:15:07   before the gig after after you know [TS]

01:15:10   David and a [TS]

01:15:13   oh and eric are talking about as i said [TS]

01:15:16   earlier the dreams of other things they [TS]

01:15:18   could do with their lives but that Nigel [TS]

01:15:20   appears with a message from Ian oh yes [TS]

01:15:23   the other dead man who have a Deadman [TS]

01:15:25   are saying sex farmers on the charts in [TS]

01:15:28   Japan which is such a great thing sex [TS]

01:15:30   farm is on the charts in Japan which [TS]

01:15:33   leads to that wonderful crazy moment [TS]

01:15:37   where I mean there's financial says have [TS]

01:15:39   a good show right but it's that moment [TS]

01:15:43   of like they miss each other he misses [TS]

01:15:45   him yeah and and so you get that [TS]

01:15:47   wonderful thing where where [TS]

01:15:49   nigel is invited on stage in the middle [TS]

01:15:51   of it states a rock and roll fantasy [TS]

01:15:52   right and there happens to be a guitar [TS]

01:15:54   right there that he can pick up and play [TS]

01:15:56   and ya know and and MMA drummer explodes [TS]

01:16:01   and they go to japan yay happy ending [TS]

01:16:04   for everybody but the drummer [TS]

01:16:06   yes you know that's up thats that was [TS]

01:16:11   one of the real false notes about this [TS]

01:16:13   movie for me how much the reconciliation [TS]

01:16:16   have to that you know that you have two [TS]

01:16:19   minutes drummers yap combatants [TS]

01:16:21   spontaneous all the time I know dozens [TS]

01:16:24   of times a year [TS]

01:16:26   no call for that either Jesus Christ [TS]

01:16:28   because the the come on bring your own [TS]

01:16:32   it out I'm i get 2 i'll get to him [TS]

01:16:34   I'm listening fun listening for belly to [TS]

01:16:37   your counselor e alright so that was [TS]

01:16:39   something thoughtfully how many drummers [TS]

01:16:41   you've gone through you burned through [TS]

01:16:42   i'm only as God made me sad [TS]

01:16:45   haha you're quick on the belt for that [TS]

01:16:48   one didn't get completely out of Economy [TS]

01:16:50   Act mention him that that's a bended [TS]

01:16:52   paul dano benedict a matte painter from [TS]

01:16:56   Sesame Street yes and of course the [TS]

01:16:58   neighbor on the jeffersons so what [TS]

01:17:00   you're saying then is that is that one [TS]

01:17:01   drummer dying of spontaneous human [TS]

01:17:02   combustion is one thing but to have a [TS]

01:17:05   second but who add that that to me that [TS]

01:17:09   push the boundaries of suspending my [TS]

01:17:11   chest i was sad that we didn't see more [TS]

01:17:13   of Ed Begley Jr as the original drummer [TS]

01:17:15   but he died in a bizarre gardening [TS]

01:17:18   access on the doctors that's not to [TS]

01:17:20   investigate further [TS]

01:17:22   best to leave it sold [TS]

01:17:25   so nice i do see your point is that they [TS]

01:17:27   shouldn't repeated they should have come [TS]

01:17:29   up with some sort of brand-new way from [TS]

01:17:31   to die but it would have been difficult [TS]

01:17:32   to fight to kill him and like in 12 [TS]

01:17:35   frames put it in a way that would have [TS]

01:17:38   communicated instead it already set up [TS]

01:17:39   the thing about spontaneous human [TS]

01:17:41   combustion so right [TS]

01:17:43   ok again underlining that people do die [TS]

01:17:46   of spontaneous commotion all the time [TS]

01:17:48   it's just not always you know [TS]

01:17:49   yeah quite widely not so widely reported [TS]

01:17:52   that they could have i suppose to have [TS]

01:17:53   like a light a light standard or [TS]

01:17:55   something just land on the stage and [TS]

01:17:58   then they cut to Japan a true it would [TS]

01:17:59   be dark and yet kind of funny that they [TS]

01:18:01   just keep on going on because it's just [TS]

01:18:03   another drummer just another drummer [TS]

01:18:05   they're interchangeable [TS]

01:18:08   that's the idea that's the end of my [TS]

01:18:10   notes and that's the end of the movie [TS]

01:18:11   there are a lot of funny things that are [TS]

01:18:12   sort of cut from from different [TS]

01:18:15   interview segments that ran over the [TS]

01:18:16   credits some of which are very funny and [TS]

01:18:18   some which are very strange [TS]

01:18:19   yes just another one of my favorite [TS]

01:18:22   lines you know [TS]

01:18:23   oh the the new drivers that so long as I [TS]

01:18:25   found that alongside can get the sex and [TS]

01:18:29   the drugs I don't really need an open [TS]

01:18:31   road [TS]

01:18:31   Johnny it's yes [TS]

01:18:35   so what you know that and that's the [TS]

01:18:37   movie it is it is a tight 90-minute [TS]

01:18:39   movie and they did exercise a lot of a [TS]

01:18:42   lot of care in cutting all of this other [TS]

01:18:46   footage out and and finding the core of [TS]

01:18:49   the movie that that you know people that [TS]

01:18:53   is a cult movie to this day I mean it's [TS]

01:18:55   not i think the level of of something [TS]

01:18:57   like the princess bride at least in geek [TS]

01:18:59   circles but this is one of those movies [TS]

01:19:00   that is is still incredibly popular to [TS]

01:19:05   be quoted in it and use it shows up on [TS]

01:19:07   list of funniest movies of all time and [TS]

01:19:09   you know it's it and it's kind of [TS]

01:19:12   amazing i didn't come to this before it [TS]

01:19:14   was a cult hit I came to it after was a [TS]

01:19:15   cult hit but I see why it is and it is [TS]

01:19:17   it's on my list of of of the funniest [TS]

01:19:20   movies of all time for certain that I [TS]

01:19:22   mean that's why I took in our movie [TS]

01:19:23   draft too is it's definitely in my in my [TS]

01:19:26   top 10 and I've seen it a million times [TS]

01:19:28   and it doesn't really get old [TS]

01:19:29   it holds up really really really well [TS]

01:19:32   even even with some of the [TS]

01:19:36   you know the terrible hair and you know [TS]

01:19:40   that terrible hair is horrible this time [TS]

01:19:42   listen shit that the Janine's outfit [TS]

01:19:47   that outfit that she it and what does he [TS]

01:19:49   say that she looks like i'm not come at [TS]

01:19:51   the bandwidth you already woman [TS]

01:19:53   especially when the dresses like an [TS]

01:19:54   Australian not mad so from here go 25 [TS]

01:19:58   yeah that is that is a spectacular [TS]

01:20:01   outfit that she is better that it's [TS]

01:20:03   amazing it's amazing [TS]

01:20:06   no it it holds up i was surprised i [TS]

01:20:08   didn't buy the blu-ray for a while and [TS]

01:20:10   we're gonna do this episode but I broke [TS]

01:20:12   down and bought about the brute blu-ray [TS]

01:20:13   I thought this movie was shot in [TS]

01:20:15   16-millimeter what can they do but i [TS]

01:20:17   don't know whether they did or rehab on [TS]

01:20:20   the printer did some digital work to it [TS]

01:20:22   or whatever for previous four previous [TS]

01:20:24   DVD release and then but they have the [TS]

01:20:26   HD source or what but the HD it actually [TS]

01:20:29   does look really good they did I i think [TS]

01:20:31   it freaked out any every last bit of [TS]

01:20:32   detail that is available in that film [TS]

01:20:34   but it looks good and you know for a [TS]

01:20:37   movie that was shot on 16-millimeter for [TS]

01:20:39   not a huge budget in la doubling for [TS]

01:20:42   every city ever it it looks pretty good [TS]

01:20:46   it sounds good the musical numbers sound [TS]

01:20:48   great that they you know it it it all [TS]

01:20:52   that holds up and then you're watching a [TS]

01:20:53   group of of idiots and their court kind [TS]

01:20:57   of lovable idiots but you're watching a [TS]

01:20:58   group of idiots do dumb things you know [TS]

01:21:00   what stupid rock-and-roll stars doing [TS]

01:21:03   dumb things and having raging egos and I [TS]

01:21:07   mean that doesn't that never goes out of [TS]

01:21:09   style that the names change in the genre [TS]

01:21:11   change but that's like that's a constant [TS]

01:21:14   that I don't see a learning progression [TS]

01:21:16   in pop stars you know it doesn't happen [TS]

01:21:18   there's a saying that whatever whatever [TS]

01:21:22   kind of clothes you wore when you felt [TS]

01:21:25   as though your life was at its greatest [TS]
