00:02:39 ◼   ► wife's and uncle's house and then didn't [TS]

00:02:46 ◼   ► finally got the DVD of it because i [TS]

00:02:49 ◼   ► remember liking it and the DVD of course [TS]

00:02:51 ◼   ► is the version that's the disney dubbed [TS]

00:02:53 ◼   ► version and until that I got the DVD or [TS]

00:02:57 ◼   ► blu-ray last week I had never watched [TS]

00:02:59 ◼   ► the japanese version with english [TS]

00:03:01 ◼   ► subtitles but I know that John insists [TS]

00:03:05 ◼   ► that uh that that's the way to watch [TS]

00:03:08 ◼   ► them so i did actually watch the blu-ray [TS]

00:03:10 ◼   ► there and then also watch some of it in [TS]

00:03:11 ◼   ► English with my kids so I've seen it in [TS]

00:03:12 ◼   ► kind of a bunch of different versions [TS]

00:03:14 ◼   ► John what's your experience with your [TS]

00:03:41 ◼   ► went back and watch the dubbed version [TS]

00:03:43 ◼   ► and I could barely remember it because [TS]

00:03:44 ◼   ► like you when you you don't have kids [TS]

00:03:46 ◼   ► you watch your movie once twice three [TS]

00:03:48 ◼   ► times you know maybe your visit once a [TS]

00:03:51 ◼   ► year after that if it's SuperDuper [TS]

00:03:54 ◼   ► you see the same movie a bazillion times [TS]

00:04:03 ◼   ► yeah and so it was kind of alien for me [TS]

00:04:09 ◼   ► don't watch so I mean like when merlin [TS]

00:04:15 ◼   ► lines from the dub and I recognized them [TS]

00:04:17 ◼   ► as lines from the don't even though [TS]

00:04:19 ◼   ► they're not like lines from the real [TS]

00:04:20 ◼   ► movie like they're not even if they [TS]

00:04:21 ◼   ► don't have the words that they say in [TS]

00:04:22 ◼   ► Japanese like the subtitles don't match [TS]

00:05:36 ◼   ► original DVD dubbed version was a fox [TS]

00:05:39 ◼   ► fox put out a version of it with a [TS]

00:05:41 ◼   ► double it's different than we've had [TS]

00:05:42 ◼   ► different voices that is anyone I've [TS]

00:05:44 ◼   ► never seen right yeah I seem to remember [TS]

00:05:46 ◼   ► that and thinking it was not so [TS]

00:05:47 ◼   ► distinguished but the movie so visually [TS]

00:05:49 ◼   ► stunning and then yeah then the Dakota [TS]

00:05:51 ◼   ► Fanning version which as i say i think [TS]

00:05:52 ◼   ► is very well done [TS]

00:05:53 ◼   ► I've got to get a 1080p of that I really [TS]

00:05:56 ◼   ► like and then today like I said for the [TS]

00:05:58 ◼   ► first time in a long time since having a [TS]

00:06:00 ◼   ► kid anyway I went back and watch the [TS]

00:06:02 ◼   ► version with subtitles and then went [TS]

00:06:04 ◼   ► down the rabbit hole of like finding two [TS]

00:06:06 ◼   ► versions of the translated script in [TS]

00:06:09 ◼   ► three different all these different sets [TS]

00:06:10 ◼   ► of you know anyway I guess my point [TS]

00:06:12 ◼   ► being that Miyazaki himself says that [TS]

00:06:14 ◼   ► you really this movie barely makes it as [TS]

00:06:17 ◼   ► it is and what makes sense if you don't [TS]

00:06:19 ◼   ► speak Japanese because there's all kinds [TS]

00:06:21 ◼   ► of jokes and nuances to get lost so i'm [TS]

00:06:23 ◼   ► really interested in hearing what you [TS]

00:06:24 ◼   ► guys have to say about that because now [TS]

00:06:27 ◼   ► I feel like I almost like I've been [TS]

00:06:28 ◼   ► watching a different movie [TS]

00:06:29 ◼   ► yes sir john john says the internet [TS]

00:06:31 ◼   ► through purest fashion that watching it [TS]

00:06:33 ◼   ► in Japanese with the subtitles is a [TS]

00:06:35 ◼   ► better experience it's certainly [TS]

00:06:36 ◼   ► different but since i since I think none [TS]

00:06:38 ◼   ► of us understand Japanese you know we're [TS]

00:06:41 ◼   ► still relying on the subtitles we can [TS]

00:06:43 ◼   ► hear what they're saying and and maybe [TS]

00:06:45 ◼   ► pick some nuance out but we can't [TS]

00:06:46 ◼   ► understand what they're saying so it is [TS]

00:06:48 ◼   ► fascinating that these different [TS]

00:06:49 ◼   ► versions [TS]

00:06:50 ◼   ► and i know i did this with Kiki's [TS]

00:06:52 ◼   ► Delivery Service not too long ago I [TS]

00:06:53 ◼   ► watched it in the subtitle version and [TS]

00:06:56 ◼   ► it is it is very different and the [TS]

00:06:58 ◼   ► translations aren't the same because the [TS]

00:07:00 ◼   ► subtitles don't need to match the lips [TS]

00:07:03 ◼   ► moving of the characters right they can [TS]

00:07:05 ◼   ► be a theoretically closer to what was [TS]

00:07:09 ◼   ► intended in the original whereas the [TS]

00:07:11 ◼   ► dubbed version needs to you know you can [TS]

00:07:13 ◼   ► have somebody saying something when you [TS]

00:07:14 ◼   ► can't see them speaking so that they're [TS]

00:07:17 ◼   ► they're very different we've talked [TS]

00:07:18 ◼   ► about this in the other anime episode [TS]

00:07:20 ◼   ► like this it's a blessing and a curse to [TS]

00:07:22 ◼   ► watch a movie with subtitles when you [TS]

00:07:24 ◼   ► don't speak the language because that [TS]

00:07:26 ◼   ► the curses of course that you know you [TS]

00:07:27 ◼   ► can't get all the nuances that are there [TS]

00:07:29 ◼   ► in the original language we can [TS]

00:07:30 ◼   ► understand the same but the blessing is [TS]

00:07:32 ◼   ► that you can imagine that they're acting [TS]

00:07:34 ◼   ► performances are better than they are [TS]

00:07:35 ◼   ► and that as a westerner that is an [TS]

00:07:38 ◼   ► actual very important but very not very [TS]

00:07:41 ◼   ► often spoke about advantage of watching [TS]

00:07:43 ◼   ► dubs with subtitles is that poor [TS]

00:07:45 ◼   ► performances where line readings are [TS]

00:07:47 ◼   ► really bad you're insulated from them [TS]

00:07:50 ◼   ► and at least in my mind I i tend to [TS]

00:07:52 ◼   ► project and imagine that these are great [TS]

00:07:54 ◼   ► uncle perform reduced actors ever really [TS]

00:07:57 ◼   ► they could just be terrible but i have [TS]

00:07:58 ◼   ► no idea what they're saying so that's [TS]

00:08:00 ◼   ► okay yeah i understand that line and [TS]

00:08:03 ◼   ► Elia and for the subtitles matching like [TS]

00:08:05 ◼   ► that i know enough Japanese to know when [TS]

00:08:08 ◼   ► that like the person said mother or [TS]

00:08:10 ◼   ► father or sister and they inserted the [TS]

00:08:12 ◼   ► proper noun instead like and they'll do [TS]

00:08:14 ◼   ► that repeatedly or when they have [TS]

00:08:16 ◼   ► expanded what I know to be a single [TS]

00:08:17 ◼   ► idiomatic phrase into an English [TS]

00:08:19 ◼   ► sentence that is more or less equivalent [TS]

00:08:20 ◼   ► stuff like that is I i would much rather [TS]

00:08:24 ◼   ► have I kind of grew up on fansubs and i [TS]

00:08:26 ◼   ► would much rather have literal subtitles [TS]

00:08:28 ◼   ► that don't make as much sense then [TS]

00:08:31 ◼   ► english subtitles where they attempt to [TS]

00:08:33 ◼   ► expand out Japanese idioms into remotely [TS]

00:08:37 ◼   ► equivalent English idioms you know what [TS]

00:08:39 ◼   ► they just say yes or thank you or [TS]

00:08:41 ◼   ► something like that in the japanese [TS]

00:08:42 ◼   ► version and then you see that the [TS]

00:08:44 ◼   ► subtitle set is like a sentence and a [TS]

00:08:46 ◼   ► half [TS]

00:08:46 ◼   ► wow it's like no I heard them they just [TS]

00:08:48 ◼   ► said yes and then the final the final [TS]

00:08:50 ◼   ► sin of the dub is when and this kills me [TS]

00:08:53 ◼   ► and they do it on these new documents a [TS]

00:08:54 ◼   ► lot is there is no line in the original [TS]

00:08:57 ◼   ► Japanese no one is speaking and yet they [TS]

00:08:59 ◼   ► will have the English voice actors say [TS]

00:09:00 ◼   ► things because they can get away with it [TS]

00:09:02 ◼   ► because like the faces and [TS]

00:09:03 ◼   ► amber yeah because they feel like they [TS]

00:09:04 ◼   ► need to explain things like oh so we're [TS]

00:09:07 ◼   ► going to know yes we're going there okay [TS]

00:09:08 ◼   ► i guess we're gonna go there and like [TS]

00:09:09 ◼   ► there's nothing like no dialogue [TS]

00:09:11 ◼   ► whatsoever and that seeing the japanese [TS]

00:09:12 ◼   ► one that just makes me angry and I said [TS]

00:09:14 ◼   ► stop it we can figure it out you don't [TS]

00:09:16 ◼   ► we're not that dumb [TS]

00:09:17 ◼   ► so now that we've we've described how [TS]

00:09:20 ◼   ► we're not qualified even judge this and [TS]

00:09:22 ◼   ► yet we're going to Steve so yes so this [TS]

00:09:29 ◼   ► did watch it in the original Japanese [TS]

00:09:31 ◼   ► because it just seemed wrong to do it [TS]

00:09:38 ◼   ► felt like I was not doing it right [TS]

00:09:40 ◼   ► because i don't speak the language and I [TS]

00:09:44 ◼   ► frankly don't have a clue how good the [TS]

00:09:46 ◼   ► translation is and I don't know enough [TS]

00:09:49 ◼   ► about Japanese speech patterns to know [TS]

00:09:52 ◼   ► if you know if there's a decent [TS]

00:09:53 ◼   ► performance going on here or not [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► obviously you know that does have its [TS]

00:09:57 ◼   ► benefits but I so so even the way I [TS]

00:10:00 ◼   ► watched it felt I felt a little dirty [TS]

00:10:01 ◼   ► and then I i intended to watch it the [TS]

00:10:04 ◼   ► second time with the English dub and I [TS]

00:10:07 ◼   ► got maybe about 10 minutes in and i just [TS]

00:10:09 ◼   ► switched back to the subs for two [TS]

00:10:11 ◼   ► reasons I mean one is one is that it's [TS]

00:10:14 ◼   ► such a different movie with the subs and [TS]

00:10:16 ◼   ► I actually I don't even have any idea [TS]

00:10:18 ◼   ► which of the two I mean it's out with [TS]

00:10:20 ◼   ► the dub it's a it's a different movie [TS]

00:10:21 ◼   ► and I'm not entirely sure which of the [TS]

00:10:24 ◼   ► two dubs i watched having obtained it [TS]

00:10:26 ◼   ► through traditional me screaming if the [TS]

00:10:30 ◼   ► father sound like the guy from wings [TS]

00:10:31 ◼   ► you're watching the Disney one [TS]

00:10:34 ◼   ► ok i'm not i'm still not sure no the [TS]

00:10:36 ◼   ► other guys and wings so they know that [TS]

00:10:37 ◼   ► guy [TS]

00:10:38 ◼   ► ok very good person so yeah I mean I got [TS]

00:10:41 ◼   ► you know 10 minutes in and i realized [TS]

00:10:43 ◼   ► that i was going to be incredibly [TS]

00:10:45 ◼   ► confused having only seen this film [TS]

00:10:46 ◼   ► twice once with the that once with [TS]

00:10:49 ◼   ► english subs and once with a dub because [TS]

00:10:51 ◼   ► they're two different completely [TS]

00:10:52 ◼   ► different movies and I was going I kind [TS]

00:10:55 ◼   ► of lose track of what was said in which [TS]

00:10:57 ◼   ► version so i switch back for that reason [TS]

00:10:59 ◼   ► and also because there are so many [TS]

00:11:02 ◼   ► little Western colloquialisms and things [TS]

00:11:04 ◼   ► that they drop into the dub and it's [TS]

00:11:06 ◼   ► it's so jarring having seen it in ya [TS]

00:11:10 ◼   ► having read that the subs and and heard [TS]

00:11:12 ◼   ► the original Japanese it just seems like [TS]

00:11:14 ◼   ► it's [TS]

00:11:15 ◼   ► so different from the way it was [TS]

00:11:16 ◼   ► intended that it just graded on me and I [TS]

00:11:20 ◼   ► didn't get through it [TS]

00:11:21 ◼   ► I i was struck while I was watching it [TS]

00:11:22 ◼   ► and and my son brought this up to that [TS]

00:11:26 ◼   ► it did this the the dubbed version and [TS]

00:11:30 ◼   ► the insertion of Western isms so his [TS]

00:11:33 ◼   ► other movies that i love is kiki's [TS]

00:11:35 ◼   ► delivery service and it's set in a [TS]

00:11:36 ◼   ► European city whereas this is set in [TS]

00:11:40 ◼   ► japan in rural post-war Japan and you [TS]

00:11:43 ◼   ► can get away with a lot of kind of weird [TS]

00:11:45 ◼   ► cultural things when it's a japanese [TS]

00:11:46 ◼   ► movie set in a European city but this [TS]

00:11:49 ◼   ► isn't that and so you do you do sort of [TS]

00:11:52 ◼   ► feel like this is not this isn't quite [TS]

00:11:55 ◼   ► right that you're really westernizing [TS]

00:11:56 ◼   ► something that that you maybe shouldn't [TS]

00:11:59 ◼   ► be because this is a Japanese story [TS]

00:12:01 ◼   ► exactly [TS]

00:12:02 ◼   ► yes well ok now that we have made it [TS]

00:12:05 ◼   ► clear that we don't know what we're [TS]

00:12:06 ◼   ► talking about never stopped us before [TS]

00:12:10 ◼   ► yeah that's why not we will soldier on [TS]

00:12:12 ◼   ► let me let me explain a little bit for [TS]

00:12:14 ◼   ► those who haven't seen this movie yet [TS]

00:12:16 ◼   ► and I i feel like the spoiler horn has [TS]

00:12:18 ◼   ► taken the week off because quite [TS]

00:12:21 ◼   ► honestly will and we'll get to this a [TS]

00:12:23 ◼   ► little bit later kind of nothing happens [TS]

00:12:25 ◼   ► in this movie to a certain degree [TS]

00:12:26 ◼   ► totally and so I I don't think you could [TS]

00:12:29 ◼   ► possibly spoil it [TS]

00:12:31 ◼   ► other than that it's really nice and you [TS]

00:12:45 ◼   ► professor and his daughters are moving [TS]

00:12:49 ◼   ► into a house in the country and when we [TS]

00:12:51 ◼   ► meet them for the first time they're [TS]

00:12:52 ◼   ► they're going down the road and up in a [TS]

00:12:54 ◼   ► truck with Vera with their possessions [TS]

00:12:57 ◼   ► and they're moving into this this house [TS]

00:12:58 ◼   ► that that has hasn't had somebody living [TS]

00:13:00 ◼   ► in it for a little while and they're [TS]

00:13:02 ◼   ► doing this because the mother is in the [TS]

00:13:05 ◼   ► hospital with what we assume is [TS]

00:13:07 ◼   ► something like tuberculosis although [TS]

00:13:08 ◼   ► it's never said I think it's the papers [TS]

00:13:11 ◼   ► yeah it's the confidence the consumption [TS]

00:13:13 ◼   ► it's definitely it's definitely [TS]

00:13:14 ◼   ► consumption it's in the graphic novel [TS]

00:13:16 ◼   ► and Miyazaki's life so he's right yeah [TS]
