144: Hangin` With the Totes

00:00:03   the incomparable number 144 jun 2013 [TS]

00:00:11   welcome back to the incomparable podcast [TS]

00:00:13   I'm your host Jason snail and in this [TS]

00:00:15   episode we're going to be talking about [TS]

00:00:16   another classic japanese animated film i [TS]

00:00:21   think last year John siracusa and I [TS]

00:00:23   spent some time talking about hayao [TS]

00:00:25   miyazaki's wonderful kiki's delivery [TS]

00:00:27   service and we're back to talk about his [TS]

00:00:30   1988 film My Neighbor Totoro which was [TS]

00:00:34   recently re-released in a beautiful [TS]

00:00:37   blu-ray edition so that's our that's our [TS]

00:00:39   hook that's our time we hook joining me [TS]

00:00:42   because you know it around and it's the [TS]

00:00:44   wave of the future it came out in 88 so [TS]

00:00:46   that's not it [TS]

00:00:46   so it's it's the blu-rays new the movie [TS]

00:00:49   is old the blu-rays do and joining me [TS]

00:00:51   you heard his voice there it is [TS]

00:00:53   Steve let's hi Steve konichiwa Jason [TS]

00:00:55   thank you do you have a lot of a [TS]

00:00:57   background with the with this movie or [TS]

00:00:59   did you just watch it for the podcast [TS]

00:01:00   this is my first my first total role and [TS]

00:01:04   my first miyazaki wow so I cast is over [TS]

00:01:07   uh-huh i have lots of questions that [TS]

00:01:10   Voice you heard as John siracusa who is [TS]

00:01:12   of course here to talk about things that [TS]

00:01:14   are animated and from Japan hi John [TS]

00:01:16   thanks for coming back you know and i'll [TS]

00:01:18   let the star trek episode i said i had a [TS]

00:01:20   false memory of us doing an episode [TS]

00:01:22   about the original reboot star wars star [TS]

00:01:25   trek didn't we do an episode not just [TS]

00:01:29   about Kiki but about all of miyazaki [TS]

00:01:31   movies and we try to talk a little bit [TS]

00:01:33   about each one arm i imagining that as [TS]

00:01:34   well uh we did try to talk about all of [TS]

00:01:39   them but didn't spend a whole lot of [TS]

00:01:41   time on any of them [TS]

00:01:42   I fear I'm going to repeat things i said [TS]

00:01:44   on that show well that's okay we're [TS]

00:01:47   going to expand this is the expansion [TS]

00:01:48   already i have not listened to that [TS]

00:01:50   episode so it will be new to me [TS]

00:01:52   that's good and who you haven't heard [TS]

00:01:55   yet but joining us for a second visit to [TS]

00:01:57   the incomparable is our good friend [TS]

00:02:00   friend of the podcast you know him you [TS]

00:02:02   love him you can't live without him it's [TS]

00:02:04   Merlin man I Merlin I Jason guys it's [TS]

00:02:08   good to have you back [TS]

00:02:09   it's wonderful to be here I love this [TS]

00:02:10   movie yeah it's a i love it too but [TS]

00:02:14   spoiler alert i think although Steve may [TS]

00:02:17   be confused by it but i think the rest [TS]

00:02:19   of us love it so we'll get into it so so [TS]

00:02:22   my neighbor totoro i can tell you [TS]

00:02:24   I first saw this movie i'm going to say [TS]

00:02:27   I mean more than a decade ago I think I [TS]

00:02:30   saw a VHS that was the original English [TS]

00:02:34   dub of this movie think that at my my [TS]

00:02:39   wife's and uncle's house and then didn't [TS]

00:02:43   see it for for many years and then [TS]

00:02:46   finally got the DVD of it because i [TS]

00:02:49   remember liking it and the DVD of course [TS]

00:02:51   is the version that's the disney dubbed [TS]

00:02:53   version and until that I got the DVD or [TS]

00:02:57   blu-ray last week I had never watched [TS]

00:02:59   the japanese version with english [TS]

00:03:01   subtitles but I know that John insists [TS]

00:03:05   that uh that that's the way to watch [TS]

00:03:08   them so i did actually watch the blu-ray [TS]

00:03:10   there and then also watch some of it in [TS]

00:03:11   English with my kids so I've seen it in [TS]

00:03:12   kind of a bunch of different versions [TS]

00:03:14   John what's your experience with your [TS]

00:03:17   background with my neighbor totoro so [TS]

00:03:20   sort of the original Japanese like most [TS]

00:03:22   na but then I had kids and they can't [TS]

00:03:25   read subtitles or couldn't at the time I [TS]

00:03:27   introduced this movie to them right now [TS]

00:03:28   subsequently i had seen this movie and [TS]

00:03:31   within the disney dubbed the one with [TS]

00:03:33   the dakota fanning and everything [TS]

00:03:35   many many many many many many many times [TS]

00:03:38   and to rewatch it for for this podcast i [TS]

00:03:41   went back and watch the dubbed version [TS]

00:03:43   and I could barely remember it because [TS]

00:03:44   like you when you you don't have kids [TS]

00:03:46   you watch your movie once twice three [TS]

00:03:48   times you know maybe your visit once a [TS]

00:03:51   year after that if it's SuperDuper [TS]

00:03:52   favorite right but when you have kids [TS]

00:03:54   you see the same movie a bazillion times [TS]

00:03:56   and so I found that in the memory space [TS]

00:03:58   for this movie [TS]

00:03:59   the tub is to come to dominate through [TS]

00:04:02   sheer repetition [TS]

00:04:03   yeah and so it was kind of alien for me [TS]

00:04:05   to be watching the subtitle version [TS]

00:04:06   which is a very strange experience [TS]

00:04:08   especially for the enemy that my kids [TS]

00:04:09   don't watch so I mean like when merlin [TS]

00:04:12   is making it tweets today everything [TS]

00:04:14   about lines from the movie those are [TS]

00:04:15   lines from the dub and I recognized them [TS]

00:04:17   as lines from the don't even though [TS]

00:04:19   they're not like lines from the real [TS]

00:04:20   movie like they're not even if they [TS]

00:04:21   don't have the words that they say in [TS]

00:04:22   Japanese like the subtitles don't match [TS]

00:04:24   the words of the characters in this [TS]

00:04:26   movie [TS]

00:04:26   well iight went to follow up on that and [TS]

00:04:29   there's actually found three different [TS]

00:04:30   translations of that line that have [TS]

00:04:32   nothing to do with creepy [TS]

00:04:33   I mean three different transcription [TS]

00:04:36   different people [TS]

00:04:37   the wreck it's pretty old it's [TS]

00:04:38   completely rotten nothing to do with [TS]

00:04:41   creepy are there multiple dubs yeah this [TS]

00:04:44   is like that dogs but there's two [TS]

00:04:46   there's two jobs [TS]

00:04:47   I'm sorry I'm jumping and there's two [TS]

00:04:48   jobs the original one which isn't that [TS]

00:04:50   great i like-like-like you i guess i've [TS]

00:04:52   seen the Dakota Fanning one many many [TS]

00:04:55   times i love it i watched it I watched I [TS]

00:04:59   don't know the first third of it tonight [TS]

00:05:00   and for the first time because everybody [TS]

00:05:03   was saying you gotta go see the subtitle [TS]

00:05:05   version like John having a kid we're not [TS]

00:05:07   going to you know have subtitles around [TS]

00:05:09   the house so yeah it's a very different [TS]

00:05:11   movie the characters come off very [TS]

00:05:12   different from the data from the dubbed [TS]

00:05:14   version i think the version is very well [TS]

00:05:16   done but it's kind of it's a different [TS]

00:05:18   movie and I mean so I guess I've seen at [TS]

00:05:22   first I saw my friend Michael showed me [TS]

00:05:24   the catbus seen like you know 13 14 [TS]

00:05:27   years ago I thought it was hilarious and [TS]

00:05:29   super weird and then i saw it i think i [TS]

00:05:32   found a copy that fell off the back of a [TS]

00:05:34   truck of the original just like the [TS]

00:05:36   original DVD dubbed version was a fox [TS]

00:05:39   fox put out a version of it with a [TS]

00:05:41   double it's different than we've had [TS]

00:05:42   different voices that is anyone I've [TS]

00:05:44   never seen right yeah I seem to remember [TS]

00:05:46   that and thinking it was not so [TS]

00:05:47   distinguished but the movie so visually [TS]

00:05:49   stunning and then yeah then the Dakota [TS]

00:05:51   Fanning version which as i say i think [TS]

00:05:52   is very well done [TS]

00:05:53   I've got to get a 1080p of that I really [TS]

00:05:56   like and then today like I said for the [TS]

00:05:58   first time in a long time since having a [TS]

00:06:00   kid anyway I went back and watch the [TS]

00:06:02   version with subtitles and then went [TS]

00:06:04   down the rabbit hole of like finding two [TS]

00:06:06   versions of the translated script in [TS]

00:06:09   three different all these different sets [TS]

00:06:10   of you know anyway I guess my point [TS]

00:06:12   being that Miyazaki himself says that [TS]

00:06:14   you really this movie barely makes it as [TS]

00:06:17   it is and what makes sense if you don't [TS]

00:06:19   speak Japanese because there's all kinds [TS]

00:06:21   of jokes and nuances to get lost so i'm [TS]

00:06:23   really interested in hearing what you [TS]

00:06:24   guys have to say about that because now [TS]

00:06:27   I feel like I almost like I've been [TS]

00:06:28   watching a different movie [TS]

00:06:29   yes sir john john says the internet [TS]

00:06:31   through purest fashion that watching it [TS]

00:06:33   in Japanese with the subtitles is a [TS]

00:06:35   better experience it's certainly [TS]

00:06:36   different but since i since I think none [TS]

00:06:38   of us understand Japanese you know we're [TS]

00:06:41   still relying on the subtitles we can [TS]

00:06:43   hear what they're saying and and maybe [TS]

00:06:45   pick some nuance out but we can't [TS]

00:06:46   understand what they're saying so it is [TS]

00:06:48   fascinating that these different [TS]

00:06:49   versions [TS]

00:06:50   and i know i did this with Kiki's [TS]

00:06:52   Delivery Service not too long ago I [TS]

00:06:53   watched it in the subtitle version and [TS]

00:06:56   it is it is very different and the [TS]

00:06:58   translations aren't the same because the [TS]

00:07:00   subtitles don't need to match the lips [TS]

00:07:03   moving of the characters right they can [TS]

00:07:05   be a theoretically closer to what was [TS]

00:07:09   intended in the original whereas the [TS]

00:07:11   dubbed version needs to you know you can [TS]

00:07:13   have somebody saying something when you [TS]

00:07:14   can't see them speaking so that they're [TS]

00:07:17   they're very different we've talked [TS]

00:07:18   about this in the other anime episode [TS]

00:07:20   like this it's a blessing and a curse to [TS]

00:07:22   watch a movie with subtitles when you [TS]

00:07:24   don't speak the language because that [TS]

00:07:26   the curses of course that you know you [TS]

00:07:27   can't get all the nuances that are there [TS]

00:07:29   in the original language we can [TS]

00:07:30   understand the same but the blessing is [TS]

00:07:32   that you can imagine that they're acting [TS]

00:07:34   performances are better than they are [TS]

00:07:35   and that as a westerner that is an [TS]

00:07:38   actual very important but very not very [TS]

00:07:41   often spoke about advantage of watching [TS]

00:07:43   dubs with subtitles is that poor [TS]

00:07:45   performances where line readings are [TS]

00:07:47   really bad you're insulated from them [TS]

00:07:50   and at least in my mind I i tend to [TS]

00:07:52   project and imagine that these are great [TS]

00:07:54   uncle perform reduced actors ever really [TS]

00:07:57   they could just be terrible but i have [TS]

00:07:58   no idea what they're saying so that's [TS]

00:08:00   okay yeah i understand that line and [TS]

00:08:03   Elia and for the subtitles matching like [TS]

00:08:05   that i know enough Japanese to know when [TS]

00:08:08   that like the person said mother or [TS]

00:08:10   father or sister and they inserted the [TS]

00:08:12   proper noun instead like and they'll do [TS]

00:08:14   that repeatedly or when they have [TS]

00:08:16   expanded what I know to be a single [TS]

00:08:17   idiomatic phrase into an English [TS]

00:08:19   sentence that is more or less equivalent [TS]

00:08:20   stuff like that is I i would much rather [TS]

00:08:24   have I kind of grew up on fansubs and i [TS]

00:08:26   would much rather have literal subtitles [TS]

00:08:28   that don't make as much sense then [TS]

00:08:31   english subtitles where they attempt to [TS]

00:08:33   expand out Japanese idioms into remotely [TS]

00:08:37   equivalent English idioms you know what [TS]

00:08:39   they just say yes or thank you or [TS]

00:08:41   something like that in the japanese [TS]

00:08:42   version and then you see that the [TS]

00:08:44   subtitle set is like a sentence and a [TS]

00:08:46   half [TS]

00:08:46   wow it's like no I heard them they just [TS]

00:08:48   said yes and then the final the final [TS]

00:08:50   sin of the dub is when and this kills me [TS]

00:08:53   and they do it on these new documents a [TS]

00:08:54   lot is there is no line in the original [TS]

00:08:57   Japanese no one is speaking and yet they [TS]

00:08:59   will have the English voice actors say [TS]

00:09:00   things because they can get away with it [TS]

00:09:02   because like the faces and [TS]

00:09:03   amber yeah because they feel like they [TS]

00:09:04   need to explain things like oh so we're [TS]

00:09:07   going to know yes we're going there okay [TS]

00:09:08   i guess we're gonna go there and like [TS]

00:09:09   there's nothing like no dialogue [TS]

00:09:11   whatsoever and that seeing the japanese [TS]

00:09:12   one that just makes me angry and I said [TS]

00:09:14   stop it we can figure it out you don't [TS]

00:09:16   we're not that dumb [TS]

00:09:17   so now that we've we've described how [TS]

00:09:20   we're not qualified even judge this and [TS]

00:09:22   yet we're going to Steve so yes so this [TS]

00:09:24   was your this was your first miyazaki [TS]

00:09:26   and and your first totoro indeed and I i [TS]

00:09:29   did watch it in the original Japanese [TS]

00:09:31   because it just seemed wrong to do it [TS]

00:09:33   any other way and even watching it in [TS]

00:09:35   the Japanese kinda like John says I I [TS]

00:09:38   felt like I was not doing it right [TS]

00:09:40   because i don't speak the language and I [TS]

00:09:44   frankly don't have a clue how good the [TS]

00:09:46   translation is and I don't know enough [TS]

00:09:49   about Japanese speech patterns to know [TS]

00:09:52   if you know if there's a decent [TS]

00:09:53   performance going on here or not [TS]

00:09:55   obviously you know that does have its [TS]

00:09:57   benefits but I so so even the way I [TS]

00:10:00   watched it felt I felt a little dirty [TS]

00:10:01   and then I i intended to watch it the [TS]

00:10:04   second time with the English dub and I [TS]

00:10:07   got maybe about 10 minutes in and i just [TS]

00:10:09   switched back to the subs for two [TS]

00:10:11   reasons I mean one is one is that it's [TS]

00:10:14   such a different movie with the subs and [TS]

00:10:16   I actually I don't even have any idea [TS]

00:10:18   which of the two I mean it's out with [TS]

00:10:20   the dub it's a it's a different movie [TS]

00:10:21   and I'm not entirely sure which of the [TS]

00:10:24   two dubs i watched having obtained it [TS]

00:10:26   through traditional me screaming if the [TS]

00:10:30   father sound like the guy from wings [TS]

00:10:31   you're watching the Disney one [TS]

00:10:34   ok i'm not i'm still not sure no the [TS]

00:10:36   other guys and wings so they know that [TS]

00:10:37   guy [TS]

00:10:38   ok very good person so yeah I mean I got [TS]

00:10:41   you know 10 minutes in and i realized [TS]

00:10:43   that i was going to be incredibly [TS]

00:10:45   confused having only seen this film [TS]

00:10:46   twice once with the that once with [TS]

00:10:49   english subs and once with a dub because [TS]

00:10:51   they're two different completely [TS]

00:10:52   different movies and I was going I kind [TS]

00:10:55   of lose track of what was said in which [TS]

00:10:57   version so i switch back for that reason [TS]

00:10:59   and also because there are so many [TS]

00:11:02   little Western colloquialisms and things [TS]

00:11:04   that they drop into the dub and it's [TS]

00:11:06   it's so jarring having seen it in ya [TS]

00:11:10   having read that the subs and and heard [TS]

00:11:12   the original Japanese it just seems like [TS]

00:11:14   it's [TS]

00:11:15   so different from the way it was [TS]

00:11:16   intended that it just graded on me and I [TS]

00:11:20   didn't get through it [TS]

00:11:21   I i was struck while I was watching it [TS]

00:11:22   and and my son brought this up to that [TS]

00:11:26   it did this the the dubbed version and [TS]

00:11:30   the insertion of Western isms so his [TS]

00:11:33   other movies that i love is kiki's [TS]

00:11:35   delivery service and it's set in a [TS]

00:11:36   European city whereas this is set in [TS]

00:11:40   japan in rural post-war Japan and you [TS]

00:11:43   can get away with a lot of kind of weird [TS]

00:11:45   cultural things when it's a japanese [TS]

00:11:46   movie set in a European city but this [TS]

00:11:49   isn't that and so you do you do sort of [TS]

00:11:52   feel like this is not this isn't quite [TS]

00:11:55   right that you're really westernizing [TS]

00:11:56   something that that you maybe shouldn't [TS]

00:11:59   be because this is a Japanese story [TS]

00:12:01   exactly [TS]

00:12:02   yes well ok now that we have made it [TS]

00:12:05   clear that we don't know what we're [TS]

00:12:06   talking about never stopped us before [TS]

00:12:10   yeah that's why not we will soldier on [TS]

00:12:12   let me let me explain a little bit for [TS]

00:12:14   those who haven't seen this movie yet [TS]

00:12:16   and I i feel like the spoiler horn has [TS]

00:12:18   taken the week off because quite [TS]

00:12:21   honestly will and we'll get to this a [TS]

00:12:23   little bit later kind of nothing happens [TS]

00:12:25   in this movie to a certain degree [TS]

00:12:26   totally and so I I don't think you could [TS]

00:12:29   possibly spoil it [TS]

00:12:31   other than that it's really nice and you [TS]

00:12:32   should see it and you know [TS]

00:12:34   spoiler alert it's nice i'm so glad you [TS]

00:12:36   you start off saying that because that's [TS]

00:12:38   that's exactly what confused me [TS]

00:12:40   oh nothing nothing i'm so so this is set [TS]

00:12:43   in post-war Japan the story is a [TS]

00:12:45   professor and his daughters are moving [TS]

00:12:49   into a house in the country and when we [TS]

00:12:51   meet them for the first time they're [TS]

00:12:52   they're going down the road and up in a [TS]

00:12:54   truck with Vera with their possessions [TS]

00:12:57   and they're moving into this this house [TS]

00:12:58   that that has hasn't had somebody living [TS]

00:13:00   in it for a little while and they're [TS]

00:13:02   doing this because the mother is in the [TS]

00:13:05   hospital with what we assume is [TS]

00:13:07   something like tuberculosis although [TS]

00:13:08   it's never said I think it's the papers [TS]

00:13:11   yeah it's the confidence the consumption [TS]

00:13:13   it's definitely it's definitely [TS]

00:13:14   consumption it's in the graphic novel [TS]

00:13:16   and Miyazaki's life so he's right yeah [TS]

00:13:21   it's straight out it's just not [TS]

00:13:23   mentioned in the movie [TS]

00:13:24   absolutely that's where this but that's [TS]

00:13:25   what it is and they want i guess in [TS]

00:13:27   foursome [TS]

00:13:28   it's medical they want her to not be in [TS]

00:13:30   the hustle and bustle of the city they [TS]

00:13:32   wanted the cleaner of the countryside [TS]

00:13:33   but she isn't there yet she's still in [TS]

00:13:34   the hospital and they're setting up [TS]

00:13:36   house and they move into this house and [TS]

00:13:39   the girls kind of clean it up and their [TS]

00:13:40   little magical black puffy guys who were [TS]

00:13:43   living in this house is nothing better [TS]

00:13:45   for the consumption that little black [TS]

00:13:47   Koosh balls flying it yeah I made a suit [TS]

00:13:49   made it and they answer they clean up [TS]

00:13:51   the house and those all go away and then [TS]

00:13:54   and and so they're living in this house [TS]

00:13:56   and one of the girls sees a creature in [TS]

00:14:01   the grass and it's like a spirit or or [TS]

00:14:04   or something a strange little animal [TS]

00:14:06   spirit and she follows it through a [TS]

00:14:09   through a kind of a tunnel in the next [TS]

00:14:12   to the tree of like made out of plans [TS]

00:14:13   and she ends up at the base of this [TS]

00:14:15   giant tree with a couple with these [TS]

00:14:18   three giant or three creatures one small [TS]

00:14:21   one medium and one very large that are [TS]

00:14:24   these wood spirits and then she declares [TS]

00:14:27   them totoro which I'm unclear the it [TS]

00:14:31   sounds like maybe it's a pronunciation [TS]

00:14:33   of troll in the dubbed version he [TS]

00:14:35   actually the large one actually says to [TS]

00:14:38   pull role and she's all your totoro [TS]

00:14:42   which is strange because he may have [TS]

00:14:44   just been saying get off my stomach is a [TS]

00:14:46   sort of sounds like that in the evenin [TS]

00:14:48   the japanese version it sounds vaguely [TS]

00:14:50   like that sort of right and are too hard [TS]

00:14:52   i didn't think they had dub totoro oh [TS]

00:14:54   yeah totoro is not the same not the same [TS]

00:14:57   voice in the japanese version in the an [TS]

00:14:58   English dub hey dub totoro they totally [TS]

00:15:00   dumped her oh man that's not right that [TS]

00:15:03   must look this up in his wikipedia [TS]

00:15:05   research that yeah i think it's i think [TS]

00:15:06   it's a Miss presentation of trouble here [TS]

00:15:07   the ideas in the dubbed version that you [TS]

00:15:10   know she s mispronounces it I yeah it's [TS]

00:15:14   supposed to be a troll based on they say [TS]

00:15:16   is that role in this is a totoro and she [TS]

00:15:18   says yes she'd miss misprint miss her [TS]

00:15:20   totoro is tomorrow but yeah but I mean [TS]

00:15:24   the yeah there's the King totoro and now [TS]

00:15:26   because keep small medium large total [TS]

00:15:28   rows so so this is a great it's [TS]

00:15:30   interesting I here I thought it was the [TS]

00:15:32   Japanese for giant retarded bipedal [TS]

00:15:34   sloth when it turns out that's its trial [TS]

00:15:37   control we don't have a word for the Red [TS]

00:15:39   Sox have two toes [TS]

00:15:41   not five so what happens next again [TS]

00:15:46   nothing really happens so so she falls [TS]

00:15:49   asleep and they find her and there no [TS]

00:15:52   total rows anywhere so it wasn't a dream [TS]

00:15:54   or was it and then later later there's a [TS]

00:15:57   rainy night and their their father's [TS]

00:16:00   coming back he's going to take a train [TS]

00:16:02   to a bus back from Tokyo to this to this [TS]

00:16:05   country place where they're living and [TS]

00:16:07   they're waiting there and the giant [TS]

00:16:09   totoro appears next to them and and yes [TS]

00:16:13   this is the plot folks and they give him [TS]

00:16:15   an umbrella and he's amused by that and [TS]

00:16:18   he gets on a bus that's like a giant cat [TS]

00:16:20   and he goes away which they call a cab [TS]

00:16:23   us the cat bus stop me if I'm getting [TS]

00:16:25   any of this wrong then then uh they [TS]

00:16:28   later have a wonderful adventure with [TS]

00:16:30   the total rows and the totoro jumps up [TS]

00:16:32   and down with the with the umbrella LOL [TS]

00:16:34   a frog burps at one point [TS]

00:16:36   don't forget that you're dead inside [TS]

00:16:37   Steve dead inside [TS]

00:16:40   I didn't say I just like the Frog [TS]

00:16:41   burping i just wanted to point it out [TS]

00:16:43   it's it's a classic moment to the girls [TS]

00:16:45   have a good time with the total rows and [TS]

00:16:46   we were led to believe that maybe they [TS]

00:16:48   are real but because they there's this [TS]

00:16:50   fantastical scene where they plant these [TS]

00:16:52   seeds in the total rows company and the [TS]

00:16:54   seeds grow into giant trees and at the [TS]

00:16:57   end of the night the trees are gone [TS]

00:16:59   father never notices anything but [TS]

00:17:00   they're the they're plants have started [TS]

00:17:02   to grow so there's some some magic [TS]

00:17:03   happening and then comes the what we [TS]

00:17:06   could maybe call the plot which is that [TS]

00:17:09   the littler of the two girls wants to go [TS]

00:17:13   see her mother and and gets like it to [TS]

00:17:17   get the phone call that the mother can't [TS]

00:17:19   come that weekend because she's had it [TS]

00:17:22   sounds like it sounds like it might be [TS]

00:17:24   an emergency has happened right first [TS]

00:17:26   right it turns out it's not a big deal [TS]

00:17:27   but they can't they have to go someplace [TS]

00:17:29   where there's a phone and call their dad [TS]

00:17:31   in the city and he has to call the [TS]

00:17:32   hospital and and they don't know in the [TS]

00:17:34   build the little girl gets upset and [TS]

00:17:36   wanders off in history I guess wondering [TS]

00:17:38   with her with her one year of corn to [TS]

00:17:40   find her mother at the hospital and she [TS]

00:17:42   gets lost and so then they look for her [TS]

00:17:45   and the and totoro helps and someone's [TS]

00:17:49   the catbus and they go and they find her [TS]

00:17:52   and everything's fine and the court is [TS]

00:17:54   delivered and the corn is delivered to [TS]

00:17:56   the windowsill of her mother's hospital [TS]

00:17:57   bed and cry and that's that moment of it [TS]

00:18:00   was a dream or was it huh [TS]

00:18:01   it wasn't or was it it wasn't or was it [TS]

00:18:06   you know that's that's one of the things [TS]

00:18:08   I really like about it is and so what I [TS]

00:18:10   like I mean obviously some of the music [TS]

00:18:12   movies are much quicker pace i mean if [TS]

00:18:14   you watch something like cat castle in [TS]

00:18:18   the sky [TS]

00:18:18   you know it's really is like an [TS]

00:18:20   adventure yeah you know moving a lot of [TS]

00:18:22   ways but i like how you know I kind of [TS]

00:18:25   like how little happens and in first [TS]

00:18:27   haha hearing you do that is a pitch you [TS]

00:18:31   Jason Snelling voice in particular maybe [TS]

00:18:32   realizing what happens here buddy I'm [TS]

00:18:35   gonna wait for it wait for it [TS]

00:18:37   here's the thing then they have to go to [TS]

00:18:39   the bus stop [TS]

00:18:40   8-way anything and it's raining and [TS]

00:18:43   maybe 13 small it's really cute just one [TS]

00:18:46   picture it but yeah that was a terrible [TS]

00:18:48   pitch that would be as a movie but you [TS]

00:18:50   know that jump too far how to help but [TS]

00:18:52   the the whole I'm very intrigued by [TS]

00:18:55   armed the druid like animism and spirit [TS]

00:18:58   spirit stuff but also you know and [TS]

00:19:01   something I guess could make it very [TS]

00:19:02   perplexing but i think is really [TS]

00:19:03   interesting is like how important you [TS]

00:19:06   know plants are in this in general and I [TS]

00:19:09   kind of did you get the feeling that her [TS]

00:19:10   dad is maybe like a botanist or [TS]

00:19:12   something is just channeling miyazaki [TS]

00:19:14   who is totally into the natural state of [TS]

00:19:17   the world that man is ruining I mean [TS]

00:19:19   like a recurring theme and a lot of it [TS]

00:19:20   every movie yeah this is yeah and this [TS]

00:19:22   is a very fattening that and girls [TS]

00:19:24   cleaning dirty houses like a schoolgirl [TS]

00:19:26   thing like it seems like always [TS]

00:19:27   somebody's always gotta clean a dirty [TS]

00:19:28   house I think that's the traditional [TS]

00:19:30   Japanese think of cleaning the floor [TS]

00:19:31   with a little rags or whatever and i [TS]

00:19:34   think i'm assuming again this is like TV [TS]

00:19:36   reading through learning about japan [TS]

00:19:37   only through animate that is not [TS]

00:19:39   something that means documented but that [TS]

00:19:40   actually is [TS]

00:19:41   it's kind of like saying you know in [TS]

00:19:43   America no two peoples clean the floors [TS]

00:19:45   with those mops in the bucket yeah they [TS]

00:19:46   do that's why you see people with mops [TS]

00:19:48   and buckets you know like Howl's Moving [TS]

00:19:49   Castle howl's moving castle has a lot of [TS]

00:19:51   housecleaning to be right and spirited [TS]

00:19:54   away has all the girls doing it once you [TS]

00:19:55   know my am my kids and I were also [TS]

00:19:58   watching and fascination about the one [TS]

00:20:00   of the one of the funny cultural things [TS]

00:20:01   here is the the bathroom [TS]

00:20:03   let's get the two big tubs and they [TS]

00:20:06   you know they're bringing in the water [TS]

00:20:07   and then like a pole family is bathing [TS]

00:20:10   we're sitting in the water and then the [TS]

00:20:11   girl gets out and she likes open [TS]

00:20:13   yourself up and then she gets back about [TS]

00:20:15   with the water and my kids were [TS]

00:20:16   fascinated by that because that's their [TS]

00:20:17   like what it what am I seeing here and I [TS]

00:20:19   said well this is how the this is how [TS]

00:20:22   they do taking a bath but that this is [TS]

00:20:26   the dads in there and the kids are in [TS]

00:20:27   there and just everybody's in a little [TS]

00:20:29   bathtub and it's just it's it's a very [TS]

00:20:31   different thing that dad is great by the [TS]

00:20:33   way is me he's like the most [TS]

00:20:35   understanding is like oh you saw a [TS]

00:20:37   totoro ok for you know he doesn't like [TS]

00:20:39   speaking of difference in the sun w not [TS]

00:20:41   my friends see in the sub he is more I [TS]

00:20:45   don't know how you like he's he's [TS]

00:20:47   friendly and garrulous and playful kind [TS]

00:20:50   of like slightly teasing the kids about [TS]

00:20:52   their make-believe things whereas in the [TS]

00:20:54   end the dub one he's like I'm the [TS]

00:20:56   friendliest dad in the world and i love [TS]

00:20:58   my girls and no I won't write like it's [TS]

00:21:01   it's more of a dorky kind of thing [TS]

00:21:03   whereas the Japanese what it's like with [TS]

00:21:05   little little bit of a twinkle in his [TS]

00:21:07   eye out of the way I can't close the [TS]

00:21:08   screen you know it's much more taciturn [TS]

00:21:11   in the he's like I mean that you know [TS]

00:21:13   this is an example of good character was [TS]

00:21:15   the dad doing this movie not much right [TS]

00:21:16   but like it despite the fact that by [TS]

00:21:18   modern parenting standards he's hit [TS]

00:21:20   neglectful and should be implicated in [TS]

00:21:22   social services the arms of allowing his [TS]

00:21:24   children to wander with a well yeah like [TS]

00:21:26   40 bucks but like you've got a priest a [TS]

00:21:28   pre-school age daughter running around [TS]

00:21:31   places where the puddles of water and [TS]

00:21:33   things like that and he's like reading [TS]

00:21:34   his book and take notes and she's gone [TS]

00:21:37   he's like huh until his dog other [TS]

00:21:39   daughter comes back to check it over his [TS]

00:21:40   old baseball score sheet [TS]

00:21:42   yeah a competent when the workday is [TS]

00:21:44   over he says has anyone seen my time [TS]

00:21:46   before you haven't given her one shader [TS]

00:21:48   an eight-hour everyone but but now but [TS]

00:21:51   like but they get you they despite all [TS]

00:21:52   that you get on his side because of [TS]

00:21:54   things like when they come to the new [TS]

00:21:56   house right and he tells the girl [TS]

00:21:58   something someone's like to see if you [TS]

00:21:59   can figure how to get up to the second [TS]

00:22:00   floor he knows how to get the second [TS]

00:22:01   floor but it's a fun thing for the girls [TS]

00:22:03   to do it like simple things like that [TS]

00:22:04   gets you on his side of like he is [TS]

00:22:07   managing to give the girl to enhance the [TS]

00:22:10   girls good time of exploring the new [TS]

00:22:11   house rather than yelling at them and [TS]

00:22:13   saying stop running around we have done [TS]

00:22:14   pack like that's so his character is in [TS]

00:22:18   both things defined by [TS]

00:22:19   that's so much of what again what I love [TS]

00:22:21   about the characterization in the movie [TS]

00:22:23   especially with ski and in a rare as you [TS]

00:22:26   kind of saying in a subtle way with her [TS]

00:22:29   dad think about like what you know what [TS]

00:22:30   they're going through you know what i [TS]

00:22:32   mean if if my wife were really really [TS]

00:22:34   ill I'm I'm unhinged all the time and I [TS]

00:22:36   don't you know I hardly help at all in [TS]

00:22:38   this case he's got to take care of the [TS]

00:22:39   kids he's gotta work he's going to do [TS]

00:22:41   all this stuff and he still keeps it [TS]

00:22:42   very playful and stuff he's always kind [TS]

00:22:44   of stepping up to the plate to try and [TS]

00:22:46   you know be the surrogate mom she's so [TS]

00:22:48   happy when her mom says that you know [TS]

00:22:50   she's like her and you know again when [TS]

00:22:52   you say it I totally agree when you say [TS]

00:22:54   nothing happens that's kind of what i [TS]

00:22:55   love because it really is on the way [TS]

00:22:57   it's done you know and yet something [TS]

00:22:58   giant is happening which it's you know [TS]

00:23:00   all about our relationship to these [TS]

00:23:01   environments in each other and he's kind [TS]

00:23:04   of plan the roberto benigni role in life [TS]

00:23:06   is beautiful the japanese version [TS]

00:23:08   he's keeping it he's keeping it you know [TS]

00:23:10   relax but the kids well mob is you know [TS]

00:23:13   potentially your death right right now [TS]

00:23:16   he's being a good dad will I mean a huge [TS]

00:23:18   change of coming to the country and [TS]

00:23:19   moving into this house and they make it [TS]

00:23:21   into an adventure and that is what this [TS]

00:23:23   is right it's their adventure with the [TS]

00:23:25   spirits of the forest now that they [TS]

00:23:26   moved out to the countryside but you [TS]

00:23:28   know he's got to go to his job and he's [TS]

00:23:30   worried about his wife in the hospital [TS]

00:23:31   and all of that at the same time so we [TS]

00:23:34   don't see a lot of that in this in this [TS]

00:23:36   father we see him being taken care of [TS]

00:23:38   his daughters and being supportive you [TS]

00:23:40   know with some issues about trying to [TS]

00:23:41   send them to their deaths [TS]

00:23:43   yeah having them check out the second [TS]

00:23:45   floor in the house with the completely [TS]

00:23:46   rickety porch that's about to collapse [TS]

00:23:48   on don't you love like when they go and [TS]

00:23:50   like you know greet the tree and and [TS]

00:23:53   yeah it's so it is self-consciously [TS]

00:23:55   silly at least in the dubbed version but [TS]

00:23:57   it's I think it's really sweet and and [TS]

00:23:59   their you know their relationships right [TS]

00:24:00   when i was getting ready for this I was [TS]

00:24:02   i love kind of google for some things I [TS]

00:24:05   want to search on walking into something [TS]

00:24:07   along the lines of Disney why does [TS]

00:24:09   disney kill so many parents and i found [TS]

00:24:11   a site that's called why does disney [TS]

00:24:13   always kill the parents and because you [TS]

00:24:16   know think about all the disney movies [TS]

00:24:17   where so much of the plot turns on the [TS]

00:24:20   fact that a parent is like dead missing [TS]

00:24:24   the band the kids the kids orphaned [TS]

00:24:26   mom's tied to a chain with a chain and [TS]

00:24:28   dumbo and this movie it's like it's and [TS]

00:24:30   it's a nuclear family [TS]

00:24:32   he's having these problems but you know [TS]

00:24:34   all the action comes out of their their [TS]

00:24:36   interactions with each other and plants [TS]

00:24:39   and charles i guess but I i think that's [TS]

00:24:42   really redeeming and you know it is true [TS]

00:24:44   I i like the fact that you know it's [TS]

00:24:46   just in so many kids movies it's so [TS]

00:24:48   vital keys or it's fantastic it's just [TS]

00:24:52   always do so much [TS]

00:24:53   I mean we're super pick one is picky is [TS]

00:24:55   my friend John siracusa is but we're [TS]

00:24:57   pretty picky about what will watch and [TS]

00:24:59   we will always fall back like if you [TS]

00:25:00   know [TS]

00:25:01   Mulan is like the worst that we will go [TS]

00:25:02   generally of non superhero stuff but you [TS]

00:25:06   know if there's so much like just [TS]

00:25:07   everybody's running around and and and [TS]

00:25:10   the kids don't see my kids and this the [TS]

00:25:12   kids like in so many of his movies [TS]

00:25:13   they're instantly totally believable [TS]

00:25:15   characters that seem like themselves [TS]

00:25:18   people with flaws but you know I mean [TS]

00:25:21   how many kids movies are really about [TS]

00:25:22   relationships that aren't like you know [TS]

00:25:24   vegetales or something that's an [TS]

00:25:25   interesting point about the dead parents [TS]

00:25:27   because in a sense that's kind of going [TS]

00:25:30   on here but it's much more subdued mean [TS]

00:25:32   obviously the reason that Disney goes to [TS]

00:25:34   that well so many times is if you're you [TS]

00:25:36   know a pre school or elementary [TS]

00:25:38   school-age kid you don't have that much [TS]

00:25:40   stuff that you gotta worry about but if [TS]

00:25:42   you were to ask a kid with their worst [TS]

00:25:44   fears it would probably be you know what [TS]

00:25:47   my parents weren't there all the sudden [TS]

00:25:48   and you know the disney just goes they [TS]

00:25:51   go to full monty and they kill off the [TS]

00:25:53   parents in this one you know the older [TS]

00:25:55   the kid is the more they're gonna get [TS]

00:25:57   about the fact that you know Mom is [TS]

00:26:00   potentially going to die here [TS]

00:26:02   that's when sasuke that's kind of loses [TS]

00:26:04   it with may write when she finally she's [TS]

00:26:07   so you know sisterly bond is really a [TS]

00:26:10   little bit maternal with the whole [TS]

00:26:11   family she makes lunch she gets real up [TS]

00:26:13   early and make lunch for everybody know [TS]

00:26:14   that kind of right but that but you know [TS]

00:26:16   it's finally when she thinks maze acting [TS]

00:26:19   like a baby that you really see the [TS]

00:26:21   cracks and how worried she really is [TS]

00:26:23   about her mom and it isn't like this you [TS]

00:26:25   know [TS]

00:26:25   lacrimosa seen with you know [TS]

00:26:27   unnecessarily soaring score or something [TS]

00:26:30   like that it's a I thought that was [TS]

00:26:32   completely authentic I thought that was [TS]

00:26:33   completely how that character would [TS]

00:26:35   respond in that situation and I think [TS]

00:26:37   that's great because the little kids the [TS]

00:26:38   preschoolers watching this won't pick up [TS]

00:26:40   on that although just call moms at the [TS]

00:26:41   hospital and she looks perfectly happy [TS]

00:26:43   and there's you know there's [TS]

00:26:44   nothing that wrong she's going to come [TS]

00:26:45   back in a couple of weeks it's pretty [TS]

00:26:46   healthy the older kids will pick up on [TS]

00:26:48   their very high very high forehead [TS]

00:26:50   it's it's nice that they're an option [TS]

00:26:52   for the kid you know not necessarily see [TS]

00:26:54   Bambi's mom gets shot you know what [TS]

00:26:56   Merlin said before is one of the one of [TS]

00:26:58   the keys to this movie understands what [TS]

00:27:00   i think is that and a lot of miyazaki [TS]

00:27:02   movies but this more so that I think the [TS]

00:27:03   other ones that a lot a lot of the [TS]

00:27:04   movies featuring children including the [TS]

00:27:06   disney ones where they kill off the [TS]

00:27:07   parents are an excuse for them to tell [TS]

00:27:10   regular adult stories but merely insert [TS]

00:27:12   child characters into leading roles so [TS]

00:27:14   that the audience can identify with them [TS]

00:27:15   where they'll have that they get rid of [TS]

00:27:17   the parents because that removes that [TS]

00:27:19   complication of that angle like people [TS]

00:27:20   to tell you what to do every day and [TS]

00:27:22   tell you to put your socks on stuff like [TS]

00:27:23   that because that frees the carries up [TS]

00:27:25   to basically be small slightly less [TS]

00:27:28   powerful adults and they relate to each [TS]

00:27:30   other and the other characters like [TS]

00:27:32   adults they do adult things throughout [TS]

00:27:33   the course the movies just that they're [TS]

00:27:34   smaller like why I fiction where you [TS]

00:27:36   have young adults so that the readers [TS]

00:27:38   can relate to them into that age but [TS]

00:27:40   they're really just doing adult type [TS]

00:27:41   things the kids in this movie act like [TS]

00:27:44   kids of the appropriate age and you [TS]

00:27:46   can't have kids that age do things like [TS]

00:27:49   going an amazing adventure like castle [TS]

00:27:50   in the sky and have the wherewithal like [TS]

00:27:52   because they're not motivated by [TS]

00:27:53   discovery redeeming the spirit of their [TS]

00:27:55   father who found this cat like that's [TS]

00:27:57   not how kids that age think just isn't [TS]

00:27:59   right [TS]

00:28:00   these kids in this movie are exactly [TS]

00:28:01   age-appropriate which maybe you don't [TS]

00:28:03   realize until you have kids who pass [TS]

00:28:05   through these exact ages and you're like [TS]

00:28:06   right then and there little kids [TS]

00:28:08   impersonating the big kid all the time [TS]

00:28:10   and wanting to you know that that red [TS]

00:28:12   totally true to me [TS]

00:28:13   so the greatest scene here about these [TS]

00:28:15   two girls that that I think says a lot [TS]

00:28:17   it and maybe doesn't get the attention [TS]

00:28:19   it deserves is the may the the younger [TS]

00:28:23   daughter insists on coming to school and [TS]

00:28:27   cries and cries and cries until granny [TS]

00:28:29   who is the nice lady whose I guess [TS]

00:28:32   renting them the house brings her to the [TS]

00:28:36   school and Satsuki goes out together in [TS]

00:28:41   the entire class watches this drama [TS]

00:28:43   unfold and in the end may spend the rest [TS]

00:28:46   of the day sitting inside skis classroom [TS]

00:28:49   and it's just such a great scene because [TS]

00:28:52   it's you know the younger sisters had a [TS]

00:28:54   temper tantrum the lady doesn't know [TS]

00:28:56   what to do that [TS]

00:28:57   babysitter and and in the end the sister [TS]

00:29:01   sort of like tries to explain to her [TS]

00:29:03   what's going on and then realizes she's [TS]

00:29:04   just got to take her under her wing for [TS]

00:29:06   the day and what I like about it too is [TS]

00:29:07   there's no real consequence to that the [TS]

00:29:09   teacher is supportive of it and the rest [TS]

00:29:11   of the students think it's really cool [TS]

00:29:13   that her little sister came and they and [TS]

00:29:15   they say nice things when they leave at [TS]

00:29:17   the end of the school day and it's just [TS]

00:29:19   it's again you could look at that and [TS]

00:29:21   say nothing happens but you know I think [TS]

00:29:23   it's great in portraying that [TS]

00:29:25   relationship and also just dealing with [TS]

00:29:27   a kid who's having a temper tantrum and [TS]

00:29:29   who is got your mind made up and there's [TS]

00:29:31   nothing you can do to change their mind [TS]

00:29:33   my favorite kid being kid seeing which I [TS]

00:29:36   pretty sure I talked about when to the [TS]

00:29:37   miyazaki episode is the content of the [TS]

00:29:39   boy who is not of the age where he [TS]

00:29:42   notices the girls quite yet but it's [TS]

00:29:43   kind of on the cusp of that yes and the [TS]

00:29:45   the way that manifests itself is him [TS]

00:29:47   communicating with the series of grunts [TS]

00:29:49   and like whenever he sees her not [TS]

00:29:52   wanting doing things are thrusting the [TS]

00:29:53   item that has the years the umbrella [TS]

00:29:54   take it and then running away dropping [TS]

00:29:57   on the ground running away and as he [TS]

00:29:58   runs away this big smile on his face [TS]

00:30:00   when she brings you back to the house he [TS]

00:30:01   hides because like the whole concept of [TS]

00:30:04   her being there is embarrassing to him [TS]

00:30:06   he hides yes and when his mother asked [TS]

00:30:08   them what you doin bro he doesn't say he [TS]

00:30:10   gave her because that would be [TS]

00:30:11   embarrassing like all of his actions and [TS]

00:30:13   you know when someone says oh who is [TS]

00:30:15   that a door and he says no one but he's [TS]

00:30:16   happy and he's playing with his plane he [TS]

00:30:18   doesn't have a way to even understand [TS]

00:30:20   this relationship he just has like these [TS]

00:30:22   visceral reactions to it in the acts [TS]

00:30:24   like like like a crazy person you would [TS]

00:30:26   think it's not like not like a male [TS]

00:30:28   character in any but that's how kids [TS]

00:30:30   that age act like you see you know you [TS]

00:30:32   see my son totally acts like that right [TS]

00:30:34   down to the grunts you're like oh come [TS]

00:30:36   on no one throws something at you in [TS]

00:30:37   grunts no no boys do that they'll do [TS]

00:30:40   they say exactly [TS]

00:30:41   no interview and if you have also by [TS]

00:30:43   that he's right at that age where he is [TS]

00:30:46   you say like he's confused about this [TS]

00:30:47   but also think about the fact that again [TS]

00:30:50   maybe every to mention that these things [TS]

00:30:51   but he's a country mouse [TS]

00:30:52   he's a kid who whose works in a rice [TS]

00:30:54   field and this girl from this really [TS]

00:30:56   cute girl of his age whose by probably [TS]

00:31:00   by contrast and it's pretty [TS]

00:31:01   sophisticated comes out and is living [TS]

00:31:04   there and he's here to take all that in [TS]

00:31:07   at one time and she is more [TS]

00:31:08   sophisticated because girls tend to [TS]

00:31:10   mature faster and she is more articulate [TS]

00:31:13   and able to like that is also [TS]

00:31:14   appropriate because like girls that age [TS]

00:31:16   compared to the boys that it makes the [TS]

00:31:17   boy things look like you know the answer [TS]

00:31:19   thoughts because they are in the girls [TS]

00:31:21   to assume you know she does right [TS]

00:31:22   rightly react by just sticking her [TS]

00:31:24   tongue out Adam and you know giving it [TS]

00:31:26   back which is good to see but for all [TS]

00:31:27   for all those things they don't have to [TS]

00:31:29   lean on the accelerator to tell us any [TS]

00:31:31   of those things we may out my reading of [TS]

00:31:35   it may come to school because she's [TS]

00:31:36   having a really hard time dealing with [TS]

00:31:38   this change [TS]

00:31:39   oh yeah and sasuke ceiling but they [TS]

00:31:40   don't they don't have to go in there's [TS]

00:31:42   not like a he's not like a song tell me [TS]

00:31:45   how you feel alright alright love the [TS]

00:31:47   little boy that doesn't have to be some [TS]

00:31:48   kind of a flashback or you know interior [TS]

00:31:51   monologue while he plays with this plane [TS]

00:31:53   like we get that you know all the things [TS]

00:31:54   went well as nothing is happening in [TS]

00:31:56   this moving movie everything is [TS]

00:31:58   happening with these people trying to [TS]

00:31:59   figure out these little bits of their [TS]

00:32:00   lives which is then only amplified by [TS]

00:32:03   these dyscrasia animism that's going on [TS]

00:32:05   but you know what you could watch them [TS]

00:32:06   cause a fantasy movie which it certainly [TS]

00:32:08   is in a lot of ways but the part that [TS]

00:32:10   grounds that it makes it more than I [TS]

00:32:13   don't know kung fu panda or something is [TS]

00:32:15   that is that this is nothing against the [TS]

00:32:17   pandas but that is is that it really is [TS]

00:32:19   grounded in and John's really how many [TS]

00:32:21   toes do pandas have fans versus totoro I [TS]

00:32:23   think the thing that really struck me [TS]

00:32:25   that struck me the most about how more [TS]

00:32:29   how much more generally authentic these [TS]

00:32:30   kids were than the usual kids you see an [TS]

00:32:32   animated films was the tears on may they [TS]

00:32:36   weren't like it was like one sad little [TS]

00:32:38   teardrop pouring down her face she you [TS]

00:32:40   see it twice see it when she's taken to [TS]

00:32:42   the school keeps throwing a temper [TS]

00:32:43   tantrum and you see it at the end when [TS]

00:32:44   she's lost and it's it's just like this [TS]

00:32:47   smudged face tears pouring down her face [TS]

00:32:49   and there's not coming out of her nose [TS]

00:32:51   yep and that's it so much more authentic [TS]

00:32:54   than then the tears that you generally [TS]

00:32:56   see in a film like this in the edit it [TS]

00:32:59   was a very small subtle thing but it [TS]

00:33:01   really kind of a impressed me was just [TS]

00:33:05   how how much more authentic it was no [TS]

00:33:07   they're all these anime episodes we are [TS]

00:33:09   at least I always end up slamming [TS]

00:33:11   western movies and you know like how [TS]

00:33:13   everything's better in Japan and they do [TS]

00:33:15   things but like the things that stand [TS]

00:33:16   out what as a Western or watching [TS]

00:33:18   japanese other things that are different [TS]

00:33:20   and one of the things that I think [TS]

00:33:21   stands out in this movie and getting [TS]

00:33:23   back to like the kids [TS]

00:33:23   being more authentic is the the [TS]

00:33:27   fearlessness and RR the the different [TS]

00:33:29   way in which they tell the story so the [TS]

00:33:31   thing I took notes when I watched it a [TS]

00:33:32   second time one of the things i noted is [TS]

00:33:35   that 22 minutes of this movie go by [TS]

00:33:37   before anyone says anything to indicate [TS]

00:33:40   that the mothers in the hospital before [TS]

00:33:42   that you don't know is their mother if I [TS]

00:33:44   did issue coming later [TS]

00:33:46   not a single not like oh you might miss [TS]

00:33:48   it or they don't emphasize it they [TS]

00:33:49   literally say nothing about the mother [TS]

00:33:51   not being there until 20 minutes into [TS]

00:33:53   the movie whereas if you made this movie [TS]

00:33:54   is a western movie especially given what [TS]

00:33:56   i think is the overall theme of this [TS]

00:33:57   movie the mom being sick would be the [TS]

00:34:00   framing device like that would be that [TS]

00:34:01   running under the credit really like [TS]

00:34:03   Citizen Kane it would be in media res [TS]

00:34:05   where you would start out with like her [TS]

00:34:06   on a bed like near death or there would [TS]

00:34:08   be dialogue or they'd be getting out of [TS]

00:34:10   the truck and it'd be like well when [TS]

00:34:11   your mother until your mother gets out [TS]

00:34:13   of the hospital kids where she is near [TS]

00:34:15   death they would have to frame it that [TS]

00:34:17   way and like it's and it's and in by [TS]

00:34:19   Western standards like oh that's bad [TS]

00:34:20   storytelling because if your whole movie [TS]

00:34:23   is about this thing you cannot mention [TS]

00:34:25   it until 22 minutes into a 90-minute [TS]

00:34:27   movie or however long it is like because [TS]

00:34:29   once that's mentioned in the previous 20 [TS]

00:34:32   minutes that you saw changes meaning and [TS]

00:34:33   I think that is true but I think like [TS]

00:34:35   that kind of type of boldness allowing [TS]

00:34:38   you to settle into the movie before [TS]

00:34:40   we're letting you know what it's about [TS]

00:34:42   it's something like it I movies for [TS]

00:34:45   adults in the West won't do that they [TS]

00:34:47   have to have the stupid voiceover and [TS]

00:34:49   the dialogue and the you know and the [TS]

00:34:51   big dramatic opening scene and the [TS]

00:34:52   stupid title card that says 36 hours [TS]

00:34:54   earlier like no one wanted to let you go [TS]

00:34:57   into through 20 mins of the movie for [TS]

00:34:58   sale by the way the moms in the hospital [TS]

00:34:59   gets you to know that in our house we [TS]

00:35:02   always say the exposition light is on [TS]

00:35:03   and then we make this little blue [TS]

00:35:05   something window with our hands but yeah [TS]

00:35:07   I think that you're I think you're [TS]

00:35:08   totally right [TS]

00:35:09   it's it's it's luxurious in its pace in [TS]

00:35:11   some ways and you may not realize how [TS]

00:35:13   much has happened until you go oh ok i [TS]

00:35:15   would that was actually kind of leading [TS]

00:35:17   up to something but you know again one [TS]

00:35:18   of my favorite scenes one of the like [TS]

00:35:19   three times i cry in the movie is when [TS]

00:35:21   they when they do find may and she's [TS]

00:35:23   standing there and what is it at least [TS]

00:35:26   in the dubsky said something like oh you [TS]

00:35:28   were taking that corner mom and make us [TS]

00:35:31   who [TS]

00:35:32   and like this to me there's so much [TS]

00:35:34   conveyed and I'm not doing it justice [TS]

00:35:37   but in that one little scene after all [TS]

00:35:38   of this really the biggest dramatic part [TS]

00:35:40   of the when they find the sandal I mean [TS]

00:35:42   oh yeah I mean you know when my [TS]

00:35:44   daughter's friend came over and we watch [TS]

00:35:46   this we had to do that i did that thing [TS]

00:35:48   because I'm overcompensated like listen [TS]

00:35:50   hey listen you know this part turns out [TS]

00:35:51   ok ok but for a minute it looks like she [TS]

00:35:53   drowned [TS]

00:35:54   yeah but that those were the the relief [TS]

00:35:57   has come we've just gotten through this [TS]

00:35:58   Lake I made the catbus thing went with [TS]

00:36:01   the tree and everything with the totoro [TS]

00:36:02   you may not realize how luxurious is the [TS]

00:36:05   movie has been until there's this [TS]

00:36:06   explosion of activity at the end it's [TS]

00:36:08   just so fantastic in the true sense of [TS]

00:36:10   the word and then when sasuke may have [TS]

00:36:12   that one tiny little exchange it's like [TS]

00:36:14   I just like this is this just pulls it [TS]

00:36:16   all together but it's so subtle they [TS]

00:36:17   didn't have to say oh you understand the [TS]

00:36:19   animism and importance of you know [TS]

00:36:22   animated druid plants in Japan and that [TS]

00:36:24   someone to take these things you for [TS]

00:36:26   nourishment from mother who has [TS]

00:36:27   tuberculosis which is a kind of [TS]

00:36:29   respiratory disease [TS]

00:36:31   yeah here's another subtle thing that [TS]

00:36:32   most people don't notice because like at [TS]

00:36:36   this point I think adults especially [TS]

00:36:37   start to check out is why is it that may [TS]

00:36:40   decides to go take the corn to the [TS]

00:36:43   mother in the hospital like if you think [TS]

00:36:45   back to the movie and you seen it once [TS]

00:36:46   or whatever like i like she just decided [TS]

00:36:48   to do that because she had the corn and [TS]

00:36:49   later told that it will make her better [TS]

00:36:51   and stuff about it but there's an [TS]

00:36:52   inciting incident [TS]

00:36:53   hey Justin it's not just like spelled [TS]

00:36:55   out with a shot from 12 different angles [TS]

00:36:58   or whatever its when her older sister [TS]

00:37:00   breaks down about the idea from other [TS]

00:37:02   not coming out [TS]

00:37:03   macy's her older sister breaking down by [TS]

00:37:05   her mother and maze personality is such [TS]

00:37:07   a sheet-like you see this little go [TS]

00:37:10   watch it again it's like it's like Mike [TS]

00:37:11   you know lake lansing the knowing look [TS]

00:37:13   at Vader in the carbon seen just not on [TS]

00:37:16   on very long but watch it again she sees [TS]

00:37:18   her sister breaking down in Manny [TS]

00:37:19   comforting her and that's the last drop [TS]

00:37:22   are amazed little face get set and she's [TS]

00:37:24   too stubborn and determined as her [TS]

00:37:25   little personality which again is [TS]

00:37:26   another great aspect of accurate [TS]

00:37:28   representation of children you can see [TS]

00:37:30   the little personalities like from a [TS]

00:37:32   ridiculously early age so we know how he [TS]

00:37:34   is going to grow up right [TS]

00:37:35   she once she sees your sister break now [TS]

00:37:36   just like that's it i'm fixing this [TS]

00:37:38   problem taking this corn to mom [TS]

00:37:39   that's what makes her leave up at that [TS]

00:37:41   point like they're all back to the house [TS]

00:37:42   everybody's fine but she could cannot [TS]

00:37:44   stand to see her oldest [TS]

00:37:45   to lose it like that and not yelling at [TS]

00:37:47   her but like being sad about then she [TS]

00:37:48   realizes oh my sister is said to all [TS]

00:37:50   right it's up to me now i have to fix [TS]

00:37:52   this problem and she sets off right with [TS]

00:37:54   her sister who has been the strong one [TS]

00:37:55   through the whole thing is now suddenly [TS]

00:37:57   weekend so she takes over [TS]

00:37:59   yeah and like it is to that type of [TS]

00:38:02   thing where it they'd is no dialogue [TS]

00:38:04   there's no 17 scenes there's no like if [TS]

00:38:07   you know musical cues talk about the [TS]

00:38:09   music there's lots of the dramatic [TS]

00:38:10   moments as music videos and Kiki as well [TS]

00:38:12   do not have any music and the music goes [TS]

00:38:14   away when when these dramatic things [TS]

00:38:17   happen a telegram comes and everything [TS]

00:38:18   their silence when they first look a [TS]

00:38:20   first look at the camphor tree and of [TS]

00:38:22   course I mean to me that's one thing [TS]

00:38:24   that's so amazing about every miyazaki [TS]

00:38:26   movie that I've seen like five of my [TS]

00:38:28   guesses is the second you hear like [TS]

00:38:30   three totally different music cues in [TS]

00:38:33   the movie you feel like you've heard [TS]

00:38:34   that song a thousand times and when they [TS]

00:38:36   go to the tree there's like silent you [TS]

00:38:37   know that one point there's some silence [TS]

00:38:39   you see the leaves rustling and they [TS]

00:38:40   have down down down down down which is I [TS]

00:38:44   mean it as it's a little ping-pong but [TS]

00:38:46   it's incredibly memorable don't you [TS]

00:38:49   think I mean all those so I mean like [TS]

00:38:50   the march at the beginning and and the [TS]

00:38:53   way like to me that confidence weird [TS]

00:38:55   combination of the scoring in the [TS]

00:38:58   background painting have a wonderful [TS]

00:39:00   impact on the rest of the movie in all [TS]

00:39:02   of these movies there's there's it's so [TS]

00:39:04   rich the way that they work together but [TS]

00:39:07   right when I watched one is watching the [TS]

00:39:09   subtitle version i was i thought my [TS]

00:39:12   audio had gone out there a couple times [TS]

00:39:13   when there's just silence there when may [TS]

00:39:15   sets out on her little coordination no [TS]

00:39:17   music when the telegram comes and [TS]

00:39:19   they're reading it [TS]

00:39:19   no music wow like that like they [TS]

00:39:21   punctuate the dramatic moments by like [TS]

00:39:23   like there's lots of silent passages but [TS]

00:39:25   then like the music comes back in like [TS]

00:39:27   when you're expecting that the comeback [TS]

00:39:29   in there's no like like stuttering minor [TS]

00:39:31   chord cellos or anything and when you're [TS]

00:39:34   expecting it to come back in all of a [TS]

00:39:35   sudden it doesn't come back in and the [TS]

00:39:37   lack of it coming back like the notes [TS]

00:39:39   they don't play you know like hit it [TS]

00:39:41   works and it's not it's not a [TS]

00:39:42   revolutionary effect but like you would [TS]

00:39:46   think people would use it more often [TS]

00:39:47   hear it is in the kids cartoon [TS]

00:39:48   understanding how to emphasize the drama [TS]

00:39:51   is a drama situation without having like [TS]

00:39:54   big bass drums or symbols playing with [TS]

00:39:56   the opposite but having no music at all [TS]

00:39:57   anyone use it comes in like it that [TS]

00:39:59   thing is this is not music that's like [TS]

00:40:01   over-the-top bombastic score that so [TS]

00:40:04   it's very you know nice and gentle like [TS]

00:40:06   the rest of the movie and even that they [TS]

00:40:08   cut away one of the things we we've been [TS]

00:40:11   talking about is white why do you have [TS]

00:40:13   this attraction to movies like this that [TS]

00:40:16   as Westerners were watching this movie [TS]

00:40:18   from Japan and I think we've said that [TS]

00:40:21   part of it is being open to the [TS]

00:40:23   possibilities of other ways of telling [TS]

00:40:25   stories that we we've seen so many as [TS]

00:40:27   adults we've seen so many different ways [TS]

00:40:29   of telling stories in the styles that [TS]

00:40:31   are popular here and then when you're [TS]

00:40:33   when you're seeing something like a [TS]

00:40:35   miyazaki movie and you realize that [TS]

00:40:37   rules that we thought were rules are not [TS]

00:40:39   hard and fast rules in that in fact [TS]

00:40:41   there are ways to tell stories [TS]

00:40:43   successfully that break those rules and [TS]

00:40:45   that's one of the exciting things about [TS]

00:40:47   this when I said nothing really happens [TS]

00:40:49   i mean in some ways lots of things [TS]

00:40:50   happen but but there's no antagonist [TS]

00:40:52   really the antagonist here was I mean [TS]

00:40:54   the episode we did about all the [TS]

00:40:57   miyazaki movies was number 84 and I [TS]

00:40:58   called wind is the enemy which was my [TS]

00:41:00   line about who the antagonist is in keep [TS]

00:41:02   the keys delivery service it's the wind [TS]

00:41:04   because the wind causes trouble and in [TS]

00:41:06   this movie the antagonist is like the [TS]

00:41:09   moms tuberculosis is the only antagonist [TS]

00:41:12   I think that existed that ear of corn I [TS]

00:41:15   had the rain I mean there's there's 90 [TS]

00:41:18   and antagonist is this the actual [TS]

00:41:20   antagonist in the lives of all children [TS]

00:41:21   the age of the children this movie and [TS]

00:41:23   as anyone who has children the agents we [TS]

00:41:25   know is what the mortal enemy of [TS]

00:41:27   children is deviation from the status [TS]

00:41:29   quo right on the status quo is I have a [TS]

00:41:31   mother she's alive she takes care of me [TS]

00:41:33   and now the statute she brushes my [TS]

00:41:35   second and has been disrupted and no [TS]

00:41:37   matter what that no matter what that [TS]

00:41:39   status quo is any disruption to it [TS]

00:41:41   because that the happy ending of this [TS]

00:41:43   movie is essentially return to the [TS]

00:41:45   status quo for these girls their mother [TS]

00:41:46   comes like as soon as the title card [TS]

00:41:48   comes up like the song is over [TS]

00:41:49   everyone's happy to deliver think the [TS]

00:41:51   very next thing you see the first great [TS]

00:41:53   title card is mom's coming home in a [TS]

00:41:55   taxi status quo restored finally my life [TS]

00:41:58   as I've known it for all these three [TS]

00:42:00   years or five years or seven years or [TS]

00:42:01   whatever [TS]

00:42:02   finally it's back to the way it was and [TS]

00:42:04   that constitutes a happy ending [TS]

00:42:06   not quite the same because they were the [TS]

00:42:08   countryside but see that's what that [TS]

00:42:09   where somebody we something we haven't [TS]

00:42:11   talked about a lot that's where the the [TS]

00:42:13   total rows come in right because i was [TS]

00:42:15   just gonna say where 56 minutes in i may [TS]

00:42:18   be no no I just want to say maybe this [TS]

00:42:20   is a parent thing is yeah I think it's [TS]

00:42:22   wonderful that we made 56 minutes into [TS]

00:42:24   this conversation without talking about [TS]

00:42:26   the most remarkable part of it in some [TS]

00:42:27   ways which is that wonderful you know [TS]

00:42:29   big you know giant blue not sloth [TS]

00:42:32   character top shelf [TS]

00:42:33   yeah I love he's going a big cat but i [TS]

00:42:36   love how rabbit cat so the total rows [TS]

00:42:39   are they're welcoming them into the [TS]

00:42:41   forest right these are forest spirits [TS]

00:42:43   and they're out in the forest there in [TS]

00:42:44   the countryside and that's that's that [TS]

00:42:46   part of the story is is them adapting to [TS]

00:42:49   this new place that they're living and [TS]

00:42:50   then there's the story with the mom so [TS]

00:42:52   it's not quite status quo just about the [TS]

00:42:56   mom but I any in the important ways [TS]

00:42:58   right like in the important ways like my [TS]

00:43:01   mother not being there is the the [TS]

00:43:03   initial sure fighting incident the [TS]

00:43:04   initial disruption and having mom back [TS]

00:43:06   it was at that point the the new house [TS]

00:43:08   is that it's cause we don't like kids [TS]

00:43:09   will get used to a new routine pretty [TS]

00:43:10   quickly but getting rid of your mother [TS]

00:43:12   is the type of thing you don't get used [TS]

00:43:14   to that easily if at all [TS]

00:43:16   that's definitely the problem to be [TS]

00:43:17   solved or not in this but the totoro i [TS]

00:43:19   guess i guess my point about talking [TS]

00:43:21   when he was talking about the totoro now [TS]

00:43:22   to which we should probably do is is [TS]

00:43:25   they are the welcoming of into this new [TS]

00:43:27   world they're saying we're the spirits [TS]

00:43:29   of this forest and I imagine that [TS]

00:43:31   there's a whole lot of animism and you [TS]

00:43:34   know a Japanese culture stuff here that [TS]

00:43:38   I don't understand and I can't even [TS]

00:43:40   judge whether when the father does the [TS]

00:43:42   thing where he thanks the the trees and [TS]

00:43:45   all of that as an American I can't even [TS]

00:43:48   judge whether that's the father being a [TS]

00:43:50   little bit goofy to make the daughters [TS]

00:43:52   feel good or whether that is something [TS]

00:43:55   that has all sorts of connections to [TS]

00:43:56   japanese culture that I just don't [TS]

00:43:58   understand the tree the tree hill pay [TS]

00:44:00   attention to it is his daughter can [TS]

00:44:03   treat him like a flower shop don't know [TS]

00:44:04   where she is ours yeah I don't know what [TS]

00:44:06   was that like we're actually that's so [TS]

00:44:07   speaking of that will seem that that [TS]

00:44:09   rang true for me too but despite the [TS]

00:44:10   fact that he's been neglecting star like [TS]

00:44:12   when you try to get work done and your [TS]

00:44:14   and your little daughter comes up and [TS]

00:44:15   says you're the flower shop now and [TS]

00:44:16   lines that's what kids do ya get work [TS]

00:44:18   done they will do I just don't let them [TS]

00:44:19   run off 48 hours after yeah [TS]

00:44:21   actually the daughter disengages and he [TS]

00:44:23   doesn't follow her which is probably a [TS]

00:44:24   mistake but ok so we should talk about [TS]

00:44:26   the totoro if we have things to say [TS]

00:44:28   about them i obviously they're they're [TS]

00:44:31   cute they're very cute and they're fun [TS]

00:44:33   and the three of them which is all I [TS]

00:44:34   always thought that was an amusing [TS]

00:44:36   interaction that they come in three [TS]

00:44:37   sizes and and they all you know there's [TS]

00:44:41   one that's kind of more like a bunny and [TS]

00:44:43   the one that's kind of more like a cat [TS]

00:44:44   and they don't say anything other than [TS]

00:44:47   you know Bo and you know but then [TS]

00:44:51   there's lots of merchandise you can buy [TS]

00:44:53   a total row you can get a big stuff [TS]

00:44:55   totoro you can get a total mug and and [TS]

00:44:58   although they're not kind of the point [TS]

00:44:59   of the movie as we've been talking about [TS]

00:45:01   all along they are they are what the [TS]

00:45:03   movie that fits the title this is the [TS]

00:45:05   fantastic element you know what what is [TS]

00:45:07   the what is the appeal of these guys I [TS]

00:45:10   mean other than that they're cute and [TS]

00:45:11   that they don't know what an umbrella [TS]

00:45:13   does a bunny [TS]

00:45:14   my-my meta theory for the entire movie [TS]

00:45:17   is that everything in this movie is [TS]

00:45:19   about how children deal with the fact [TS]

00:45:21   that their mother isn't there and every [TS]

00:45:23   every thing in the movie including the [TS]

00:45:25   totoro and all the other things is a [TS]

00:45:27   manifestation of things that are inside [TS]

00:45:29   these children that they have no [TS]

00:45:30   facility to understand at all right and [TS]

00:45:34   a lot of the things that the these [TS]

00:45:36   feelings of the children's are have are [TS]

00:45:37   having and these desires that they have [TS]

00:45:39   everything manifest in these fantastical [TS]

00:45:41   ways and in the same way when a child is [TS]

00:45:44   watching this movie they don't know that [TS]

00:45:47   the total rows and the stuff these [TS]

00:45:49   children are fantasizing about in the [TS]

00:45:50   sprites they don't know what part of the [TS]

00:45:52   the internal life of the child those [TS]

00:45:54   things are coming from or represent or [TS]

00:45:56   our mirror image of they just know that [TS]

00:45:59   how that guy's cute Oros its rights or [TS]

00:46:02   front or whatever like even if its price [TS]

00:46:03   which is the easiest one of like kids [TS]

00:46:05   going into place that are afraid of the [TS]

00:46:06   dark and the dark 10 you can become sort [TS]

00:46:09   of this thing that's alive right well in [TS]

00:46:11   a child's mind it is alive so what if [TS]

00:46:12   you just had a living thing that was [TS]

00:46:14   basically like darkness manifested in [TS]

00:46:15   these little things that you're [TS]

00:46:17   initially scared of and then they get [TS]

00:46:18   used to it and they leave whatever kids [TS]

00:46:21   aren't going to make that connection but [TS]

00:46:22   they I feel like they will connect with [TS]

00:46:24   the suit sprites as something they [TS]

00:46:26   recognized in the same way towards big [TS]

00:46:28   cute fuzzy thing but the total rows [TS]

00:46:30   especially the big humongous one the [TS]

00:46:32   smaller one coming to the big humongous [TS]

00:46:34   totoro [TS]

00:46:34   is like that feeling about your mom not [TS]

00:46:37   being there and maybe she might never [TS]

00:46:38   come back [TS]

00:46:40   made manifest in this big giant thing [TS]

00:46:42   and kids don't are gonna make that [TS]

00:46:43   connection when they watch it but i [TS]

00:46:45   would think that they would get some [TS]

00:46:47   sort of unease about the idea of the [TS]

00:46:49   mother being in the hospital depending [TS]

00:46:50   on what kind of kid there and how old [TS]

00:46:52   they are and that this big totoro thing [TS]

00:46:54   I don't know what YouTube Merlin but [TS]

00:46:56   like my daughter was very scared when I [TS]

00:46:59   but it seemed when they meet the big [TS]

00:47:00   tour of the first time she's always move [TS]

00:47:01   it grandpa was like two and a half or [TS]

00:47:02   whatever the growling in the big teeth [TS]

00:47:04   yeah because he's got a big mountains Jo [TS]

00:47:06   get stronger teeth and everything and [TS]

00:47:08   are you know a lot of things that [TS]

00:47:09   Miyazaki movies are like that we're like [TS]

00:47:11   the goat think once the corn they draw [TS]

00:47:13   that goat is a pretty scary-looking go [TS]

00:47:15   to have elite than a realistic-looking [TS]

00:47:17   face and stuff like that and an adult [TS]

00:47:20   watches to like this is a big fuzzy [TS]

00:47:22   thing and it made noises and it was a [TS]

00:47:23   goat nothing right but a little kid [TS]

00:47:25   watches that goat is terrifying the [TS]

00:47:27   total opening his mouth is terrifying so [TS]

00:47:28   here it is again they don't understand [TS]

00:47:30   this is the embodiment of the children's [TS]

00:47:32   fear about their mother but they do know [TS]

00:47:34   there's actually something a little bit [TS]

00:47:35   scary by the thing and then eventually [TS]

00:47:36   they come around to it being a little [TS]

00:47:38   bit friendlier like everything magical [TS]

00:47:40   and interesting is also all scary to [TS]

00:47:43   both the children in the movie in the [TS]

00:47:44   children watching the movie create be [TS]

00:47:46   great baby to piggyback on that yes I [TS]

00:47:49   think that's a really good on unified [TS]

00:47:51   field theory of totoro on but he has [TS]

00:47:54   nothing interesting again you know help [TS]

00:47:57   my daughter seen this movie a bunch of [TS]

00:47:58   times it's one of our one of our go-to [TS]

00:48:00   is it's up there with the with the [TS]

00:48:02   incredibles as one of our like well if [TS]

00:48:05   we can't agree will definitely watch [TS]

00:48:07   this and everybody will be like pretty [TS]

00:48:08   ok happy but but you know but again when [TS]

00:48:11   we have there are guests over and she [TS]

00:48:13   hadn't seen the surprise before she [TS]

00:48:15   hadn't seen what happens after may looks [TS]

00:48:17   under the house she hadn't seen what you [TS]

00:48:20   know I guess I'm getting as they're [TS]

00:48:21   they're part of part of the beauty of [TS]

00:48:24   this movie is I don't know this is a [TS]

00:48:26   japanese thing or miyazaki thing Josh [TS]

00:48:28   think about mom [TS]

00:48:30   the character of mom in halves are there [TS]

00:48:33   so many different castles in the sand [TS]

00:48:36   castle in the sky [TS]

00:48:37   the one where she rides motorcycles [TS]

00:48:37   right you know talking about the one [TS]

00:48:40   with the higher the pirate mother [TS]

00:48:42   oh yeah the castle in the sky or you [TS]

00:48:44   know everything and everyone of these [TS]

00:48:46   movies [TS]

00:48:47   has these were so many themes obviously [TS]

00:48:49   flying there's so many things that go [TS]

00:48:51   through all these movies but there are [TS]

00:48:52   so many things that at the first of all [TS]

00:48:55   yes that a parent and a child will watch [TS]

00:48:57   and get a really different vibe from [TS]

00:48:59   like when not Kiki but what's how's [TS]

00:49:03   Moving Castle when she first walked down [TS]

00:49:05   that alley and those two guys are are [TS]

00:49:08   talking to her and it becomes obvious [TS]

00:49:10   for how comes up and kind of saves her [TS]

00:49:12   that [TS]

00:49:13   wow that those guys are more than creepy [TS]

00:49:15   like those guys are predators like the [TS]

00:49:17   kid might watch that and go oh like [TS]

00:49:19   those are probably bad guys who are like [TS]

00:49:21   giving her a hard time as a parent of a [TS]

00:49:23   daughter i watch that scene went whoa [TS]

00:49:25   like that's wild there's a little kid [TS]

00:49:27   might watch this and I guess I'm you [TS]

00:49:31   know in America we're so used to being [TS]

00:49:33   banged over the head with the threat of [TS]

00:49:36   death being right around the corner and [TS]

00:49:38   that basically the death death is the [TS]

00:49:40   car that gets played in so many things [TS]

00:49:42   including with the parents and in movies [TS]

00:49:44   but in this case I don't know where this [TS]

00:49:46   comes from but again and again in this [TS]

00:49:48   movie and so many miyazaki movies we see [TS]

00:49:50   that there's really it's just something [TS]

00:49:52   we don't understand yet it's something [TS]

00:49:54   that's mysterious and it could end up [TS]

00:49:55   being in chanting it could stay creepy [TS]

00:49:58   but it is something that we can't [TS]

00:50:00   completely understand and you know what [TS]

00:50:02   by the time we get it you know an hour [TS]

00:50:03   and a half later we still don't really [TS]

00:50:05   understand what happened and we we made [TS]

00:50:08   we may be scared we may be happy but it [TS]

00:50:10   we isn't hot resolved and and I think in [TS]

00:50:13   a typical again not to beat up on non [TS]

00:50:15   miyazaki movies but in a lot of movies [TS]

00:50:17   there is this this need to artificially [TS]

00:50:21   clothes a lot of loops because it's [TS]

00:50:26   essential to the story that those be [TS]

00:50:27   close so like do we really understand [TS]

00:50:29   like why did the tree go go away after [TS]

00:50:30   the dream [TS]

00:50:31   well it doesn't matter what matters is [TS]

00:50:33   that there's something important and [TS]

00:50:35   just back to the corn for a second i [TS]

00:50:37   think one of the reasons the corn things [TS]

00:50:39   started is when they're picking the corn [TS]

00:50:41   doesn't granny say something about that [TS]

00:50:43   all these veterans are you have to make [TS]

00:50:45   your it'll make them healthier plants [TS]

00:50:47   the plants the seed and little kids head [TS]

00:50:49   very good but you don't have the same [TS]

00:50:50   with the kids the kids remember and [TS]

00:50:52   that's exactly right John and you end up [TS]

00:50:53   playing this juvenile game of telephone [TS]

00:50:55   were a little kid you know he's trying [TS]

00:50:57   to understand the world and end up [TS]

00:50:58   trying to make these connections but in [TS]

00:50:59   this case things like the 64 [TS]

00:51:01   see that turns on its really cute and [TS]

00:51:02   it's really funny but but there's no [TS]

00:51:04   need to go either like okay first of all [TS]

00:51:07   the suits are totally like this suit [TS]

00:51:10   gremlins are a hallucination because [TS]

00:51:12   you're crazy little kid no that's not [TS]

00:51:13   accurate [TS]

00:51:14   your father says they might be real and [TS]

00:51:15   you have stuff on your hands what did we [TS]

00:51:18   resolve where there's actually some [TS]

00:51:19   sprites on their hands [TS]

00:51:20   well maybe maybe not you know that the [TS]

00:51:24   total is real [TS]

00:51:25   I don't know she got to the hospital but [TS]

00:51:28   to think that would be maddening in most [TS]

00:51:30   movies you know if you watch the james [TS]

00:51:32   bond movie and like didn't understand [TS]

00:51:35   like how he got across you know from one [TS]

00:51:37   continent to the other drive you crazy [TS]

00:51:38   well he's stepped into a phone booth and [TS]

00:51:40   put in a coin and then the booth turned [TS]

00:51:42   into a giant and the pig was suddenly in [TS]

00:51:45   another country and then it was not a [TS]

00:51:47   pig and he was in that country you'd be [TS]

00:51:49   like what the hell just happened the [TS]

00:51:51   sign by the mice light goes into [TS]

00:51:53   Goldfinger place [TS]

00:51:54   yeah they do in western movies when they [TS]

00:51:57   do that they go way over the top and [TS]

00:51:59   make it ok let's make it clear that this [TS]

00:52:01   is all like the taking place in the mind [TS]

00:52:04   of a child and on there it's totally [TS]

00:52:05   fantastical and in some ways the colors [TS]

00:52:07   and the cinematography never want to do [TS]

00:52:09   something like this that's like more or [TS]

00:52:12   less straightforward reality but with [TS]

00:52:14   these fantastical elements made all that [TS]

00:52:15   they stick out all the board because [TS]

00:52:17   everything else like the house looks [TS]

00:52:18   like a real house the bicycle was like a [TS]

00:52:19   real bicycle people doing real jobs [TS]

00:52:21   they're cooked their farming horizon the [TS]

00:52:23   real way it's period-accurate for that [TS]

00:52:25   places in Japan you know and then this [TS]

00:52:27   like a cat bus right and that like I [TS]

00:52:30   feel like I've sound just moving to a [TS]

00:52:31   lot of adults who were not prepared and [TS]

00:52:34   they disengaged else is engaged from [TS]

00:52:37   this movie because they said all this is [TS]

00:52:38   just some silly thing for kids it makes [TS]

00:52:40   no sense because they you know they [TS]

00:52:42   decided it's not a coherent narrative [TS]

00:52:44   but i think it's entirely coherent as a [TS]

00:52:46   representation of how children that age [TS]

00:52:48   actually live where the line between [TS]

00:52:50   what's real and what's fantasy like it's [TS]

00:52:54   not there the the catbus is rendered [TS]

00:52:56   just as realistically as the people you [TS]

00:52:58   know planting the rice in the fields [TS]

00:52:59   because as far as kids concerned they're [TS]

00:53:01   both equally valid real totally like [TS]

00:53:05   what they don't know what's weird they [TS]

00:53:06   just know what they experience and so [TS]

00:53:08   these fantastic like that was it a dream [TS]

00:53:11   that happen in real life like doesn't [TS]

00:53:13   matter that like that there [TS]

00:53:14   whole life is like that everything in [TS]

00:53:16   their life is a blur of things that [TS]

00:53:19   might be real and that representative [TS]

00:53:20   the way the world works and things that [TS]

00:53:22   might be just a story that you did read [TS]

00:53:23   you my we just did a my son's open house [TS]

00:53:27   and he's in third grade and I was [TS]

00:53:31   looking at his work for the year and he [TS]

00:53:32   has all these things and he does this [TS]

00:53:34   around the house to where you take a [TS]

00:53:36   real element and then he sort of like [TS]

00:53:37   spins these uh these what ifs like in [TS]

00:53:40   fact I his teacher said that his reading [TS]

00:53:43   comprehension probably is higher than [TS]

00:53:45   his score would indicate because he gets [TS]

00:53:48   so caught up in it that he just begins [TS]

00:53:49   like riffing on and then what about this [TS]

00:53:51   and then what if this happened and what [TS]

00:53:53   if this happened then your kind of gone [TS]

00:53:54   it's like he's into Fantasyland and I [TS]

00:53:56   look at a scene even just seemed like [TS]

00:53:58   that the famous scene where they're [TS]

00:54:00   waiting at the bus stop in the end the [TS]

00:54:01   giant totoro is there I that's like what [TS]

00:54:04   if you're waiting at the bus stop and [TS]

00:54:05   you an umbrella what would what would [TS]

00:54:07   what would the totoro have would he have [TS]

00:54:09   anything maybe he has a leaf on it said [TS]

00:54:10   well what if we gave him an umbrella [TS]

00:54:11   what do you know what it was what would [TS]

00:54:12   he do what what if he jumped up and down [TS]

00:54:14   a bunch of water fell on you know just [TS]

00:54:16   like whoa [TS]

00:54:17   we're just going to keep going with it [TS]

00:54:19   and and that's when I describe these [TS]

00:54:22   movies to people or i use this a lot in [TS]

00:54:24   this podcast i use the word charming [TS]

00:54:26   which I i don't use in real life [TS]

00:54:28   actually but on this podcast I use it a [TS]

00:54:30   lot which is there's that moment where [TS]

00:54:32   you are under the spell and you're [TS]

00:54:33   having a good time and it kinda doesn't [TS]

00:54:35   matter it doesn't matter if these the [TS]

00:54:38   miyazaki movies especially their they're [TS]

00:54:40   so strong with the charm that it doesn't [TS]

00:54:43   you know I just enjoy being in the world [TS]

00:54:45   i like looking at the at the background [TS]

00:54:47   I like that the shot of the water where [TS]

00:54:50   you can see the stuff that's down in the [TS]

00:54:51   running water as it as though as the [TS]

00:54:54   water rushes over as they're walking to [TS]

00:54:57   the house it's just this incredible [TS]

00:54:58   detail that you don't normally see in in [TS]

00:55:02   animation and then even with the things [TS]

00:55:04   like the that how the total rows behave [TS]

00:55:07   after you realize that the big toe is [TS]

00:55:08   going to eat her [TS]

00:55:10   they just are just friendly and charming [TS]

00:55:11   and you're enjoying this experience and [TS]

00:55:14   it does it does it always have to be [TS]

00:55:16   advancing a story and do third there [TS]

00:55:18   don't always need to be threats and evil [TS]

00:55:21   people who are in a conflict is a very [TS]

00:55:24   important part of drama [TS]

00:55:25   this is true but it doesn't always have [TS]

00:55:26   to be [TS]

00:55:27   and it drama and this is this is that [TS]

00:55:29   it's just kind of charming and pleasant [TS]

00:55:31   and it's nice to be there and and I mean [TS]

00:55:34   that's that's why that's why works for [TS]

00:55:36   me [TS]

00:55:37   funny you mention that because i'm [TS]

00:55:38   looking at my notes right now in the [TS]

00:55:40   second note right after the one that [TS]

00:55:41   just says what just happened haha says [TS]

00:55:45   totally charming [TS]

00:55:46   ah look at that I was what I wanted to [TS]

00:55:48   drink debrief you since you're you're a [TS]

00:55:50   newbie to this 22 how how you experience [TS]

00:55:53   this and what the hell you thought with [TS]

00:55:55   your done with it because it's like [TS]

00:55:56   what's happening is anything happening [TS]

00:55:58   now that was nice [TS]

00:55:59   yeah i watch the whole thing with this [TS]

00:56:01   gigantic smile on my face because you [TS]

00:56:03   really can't help it [TS]

00:56:04   it is totally charming when the two [TS]

00:56:06   girls the creatures every everybody's [TS]

00:56:08   pretty much adorable too dad is even [TS]

00:56:09   adorable although clearly either insane [TS]

00:56:12   or you're hoping this kids die [TS]

00:56:15   he's delusional he you know he might be [TS]

00:56:17   wider than the flower store that's my [TS]

00:56:19   parenting was like back then it was [TS]

00:56:21   there in exile at the scene where [TS]

00:56:22   they're they're outside on the tree when [TS]

00:56:25   both of the girls are hanging with the [TS]

00:56:27   totes ma and they're they're making the [TS]

00:56:29   plants grow [TS]

00:56:30   I feel like when he looks out the window [TS]

00:56:31   there he actually kind of sees them [TS]

00:56:33   because he is completely insane [TS]

00:56:35   now the word the word I would use [TS]

00:56:39   instead of charming about it was time [TS]

00:56:41   does this thing that I seen a lot of [TS]

00:56:43   anime is that a lot of anime is about [TS]

00:56:45   the sensory experience of events more [TS]

00:56:49   than the events themselves and a lot of [TS]

00:56:51   the things that we end up labeling as [TS]

00:56:52   charming are scenes in which the camera [TS]

00:56:56   or the script or whatever focuses on [TS]

00:56:58   sensory elements more than expedition or [TS]

00:57:02   events or even character development so [TS]

00:57:04   they're like if you go through totoro [TS]

00:57:05   and just you can just freeze frame on 70 [TS]

00:57:07   different scenes where y is the scene in [TS]

00:57:09   the movie again because it shows the [TS]

00:57:11   light reflecting off the little [TS]

00:57:13   waterfall [TS]

00:57:13   yeah why is this even though again [TS]

00:57:15   because it shows how shiny and acorn is [TS]

00:57:17   and how it rolls on the table like there [TS]

00:57:19   you know and sometimes it's much longer [TS]

00:57:21   like it like that it's really true I [TS]

00:57:23   hadn't thought of that's totally true [TS]

00:57:24   that allowed the loud sounds of the [TS]

00:57:26   insects at night like what happens in [TS]

00:57:28   the seem like they will bring you into [TS]

00:57:30   sensory experiences that will that you [TS]

00:57:33   will relate to just as much if not more [TS]

00:57:36   than [TS]

00:57:37   hey remember when this happened to you [TS]

00:57:38   when you got into an argument or when [TS]

00:57:40   someone chased or whatever this is like [TS]

00:57:42   hey remember how water looks when it's [TS]

00:57:45   flowing over a broken bottle like when [TS]

00:57:48   may when my picks up the skate makes you [TS]

00:57:51   know lunch for everybody and I this time [TS]

00:57:53   in particular I guess I i noticed [TS]

00:57:55   there's just a short little shot of May [TS]

00:57:57   picks up her like a little bento box i [TS]

00:58:00   guess yes she picks up for luncheon and [TS]

00:58:02   with fish and the rice and she like goes [TS]

00:58:04   and she can make say mmm face and that's [TS]

00:58:07   all there is to it yet that's all there [TS]

00:58:09   is to it [TS]

00:58:10   it's just a sensory experience and maybe [TS]

00:58:12   in again maybe I'm reading too much into [TS]

00:58:13   it but you know she's that's a little [TS]

00:58:16   bit of home and in that little box yeah [TS]

00:58:18   you know there's all kinds of little [TS]

00:58:20   sensory things where people just pause [TS]

00:58:22   and and you know just and I don't know [TS]

00:58:24   the translation this but just may [TS]

00:58:26   standing there and holding a rusty [TS]

00:58:28   bucket in her hand [TS]

00:58:29   it's intended of course that classic [TS]

00:58:32   line but she's holding this bucket hit [TS]

00:58:34   her hand and it's just a shot of her [TS]

00:58:35   staring through a rusty bucket and you [TS]

00:58:37   get the sense and I immediately saw in [TS]

00:58:39   that because I'm a parent himself [TS]

00:58:41   involved is the same way that my [TS]

00:58:42   daughter would go and explore area and [TS]

00:58:44   pick up stuff that I would never in a [TS]

00:58:45   million years pickup and the way she's [TS]

00:58:47   running around that wonderful shot of [TS]

00:58:48   her neglectful father looking at his [TS]

00:58:50   body books what she runs around outside [TS]

00:58:52   is just doing nothing in particular [TS]

00:58:53   rings completely true because like you [TS]

00:58:55   say John and like it's like kind of like [TS]

00:58:57   we're all saying is that you know this [TS]

00:58:59   is this is being a being a kid being [TS]

00:59:01   being a human being is about trying to [TS]

00:59:03   tell cut some kind of a story about the [TS]

00:59:05   world that makes sense and that where [TS]

00:59:07   you get to be a main character and [TS]

00:59:09   you're trying to draw together these [TS]

00:59:10   threads that may be completely unrelated [TS]

00:59:12   i mean how many times you guessed the [TS]

00:59:14   wrong lyrics to a song when you were a [TS]

00:59:16   kid because you were just trying to you [TS]

00:59:17   know get this thing right [TS]

00:59:19   I you know I my daughter didn't [TS]

00:59:21   understand because it's a Shinto when [TS]

00:59:23   that when the girls are trying to get [TS]

00:59:25   out of the rain [TS]

00:59:26   you know in there and there and and ski [TS]

00:59:28   talks to the statue and my daughter [TS]

00:59:30   turns because she thinks that through [TS]

00:59:31   his real first and I said now that's [TS]

00:59:33   actually ate and then i realized i would [TS]

00:59:35   have to explain this entire culture of [TS]

00:59:37   you know what should be dead relatives [TS]

00:59:38   and stuff you know but in this there's [TS]

00:59:41   just it's just these little things you [TS]

00:59:42   see a little kid standing in the rain [TS]

00:59:44   and it sounds so corny but you know kids [TS]

00:59:47   experience whether it's an earache or [TS]

00:59:49   roller coaster or a large animal holding [TS]

00:59:52   a leaf they experience everything so [TS]

00:59:54   much more profoundly than we do they not [TS]

00:59:56   they not you know have the nostalgia [TS]

00:59:59   about [TS]

00:59:59   about [TS]

01:00:00   that we get but the kids feel things in [TS]

01:00:02   a way much more in the moment and and [TS]

01:00:05   fully I think the adults to and slowing [TS]

01:00:08   this stuff down and putting it on these [TS]

01:00:10   in these little tiny and small terms in [TS]

01:00:12   these little tiny shots i think can make [TS]

01:00:15   that come back to the surface for us too [TS]

01:00:17   we watch it because we see in our kids [TS]

01:00:19   but we also remember that from being a [TS]

01:00:20   kit and holding up a bucket and saying [TS]

01:00:22   stupid where the stupid bucket [TS]

01:00:24   what a stupid bucket is that the line in [TS]

01:00:25   the dub yeah I was it wasn't the [TS]

01:00:28   original rusty bucket she says it's her [TS]

01:00:31   this is a rusty bucket I don't think [TS]

01:00:32   she's having a bucket i think is all she [TS]

01:00:34   says she says this bucket is symbolic oh [TS]

01:00:36   yeah and then the bus stop seem like [TS]

01:00:39   when they're there when the rain is [TS]

01:00:40   going on the total shows up the key [TS]

01:00:42   century part of that scene is like and [TS]

01:00:45   you can think back to when your kid even [TS]

01:00:46   now when you have an umbrella over your [TS]

01:00:48   head is a difference between the [TS]

01:00:49   trickling rain and like the big drops of [TS]

01:00:51   rain that shake off the general the [TS]

01:00:53   satin and sound and how it started out [TS]

01:00:55   can be startling for a bunch of rain to [TS]

01:00:56   come down and make that noise and when [TS]

01:00:58   you're a kid you're like maybe you're [TS]

01:00:59   doing that for the first time to this [TS]

01:01:00   two different sounds that the rain can [TS]

01:01:02   make an umbrella is the drip drip brain [TS]

01:01:03   of the rain going to the puddles and [TS]

01:01:05   then there's when it shakes off of a [TS]

01:01:06   tree because the tree collects larger [TS]

01:01:07   drops and they slide off and you know [TS]

01:01:09   the totoro takes advantage of that and [TS]

01:01:11   once he realizes that tape as [TS]

01:01:13   interesting sound let's make more of [TS]

01:01:14   that that that's the sensory part of [TS]

01:01:17   that in the drama in that scene is like [TS]

01:01:18   oh here comes the whole bunch of water [TS]

01:01:20   on top of it and maybe you don't think [TS]

01:01:22   about that until like you're I don't [TS]

01:01:24   having kids with you in this mindset [TS]

01:01:26   here at the bus stop with your kids and [TS]

01:01:28   you're holding the umbrella and the kids [TS]

01:01:30   are holding their umbrellas and select [TS]

01:01:31   the first time that they get to hold [TS]

01:01:32   their own umbrella and the big droplets [TS]

01:01:33   on their umbrella and they all get [TS]

01:01:35   started and i'm excited by you realize [TS]

01:01:37   that this is the thing and you know it [TS]

01:01:38   it's kind of cliché tell you know the [TS]

01:01:40   adults we take for granted all these [TS]

01:01:41   things and the kids let us reconnect [TS]

01:01:43   with our blah blah blah blah but like [TS]

01:01:44   that's part of what this movie is about [TS]

01:01:46   and it's it's accurate for the kids who [TS]

01:01:49   are in the movie but I think it's also a [TS]

01:01:52   real experience that the adults watching [TS]

01:01:54   again they don't disengage can have by [TS]

01:01:56   watching this movie you know one of the [TS]

01:01:57   things that they say about the reason [TS]

01:02:00   kids can get obsessed with you know [TS]

01:02:03   whether it's like pokemon cards or you [TS]

01:02:06   know anything where they wanna they want [TS]

01:02:08   to know everything about some little [TS]

01:02:09   thing is that is that the world is so [TS]

01:02:11   vast and I know [TS]

01:02:12   bowl and where's your kid you realize [TS]

01:02:14   that that you basically don't know [TS]

01:02:16   anything about anything and one natural [TS]

01:02:18   reaction to that is to become very [TS]

01:02:20   knowledgeable in some small thing just [TS]

01:02:23   whatever it is it's like I know [TS]

01:02:25   everything there is about this like for [TS]

01:02:26   my son right now it's minecraft he [TS]

01:02:28   talked to me a lot about Minecraft right [TS]

01:02:30   and when I see the scene where they're [TS]

01:02:33   waiting for the bus [TS]

01:02:34   one of the other things that strikes me [TS]

01:02:36   is that that's a scene where the the [TS]

01:02:38   totoro is the proxy where the girls know [TS]

01:02:41   about umbrellas the right and and they [TS]

01:02:43   have to show him the umbrella and it's [TS]

01:02:45   it's this nice thing where there you [TS]

01:02:47   know he's this he's the wood spirit that [TS]

01:02:49   they understand that the technology and [TS]

01:02:51   and and you know he also has things to [TS]

01:02:53   show them but I like that they're there [TS]

01:02:55   in this position where they're like oh [TS]

01:02:57   here and try this try this umbrella and [TS]

01:03:00   and also by the way the whole is a [TS]

01:03:03   dreamers it real [TS]

01:03:04   where's the umbrella go to take seem [TS]

01:03:07   real [TS]

01:03:07   no yeah it just looks that in a movie oh [TS]

01:03:10   he took that sunbrella yeah yeah like [TS]

01:03:11   that that type of that scene spends a [TS]

01:03:13   lot of time like letting them being [TS]

01:03:15   sitting there in the dripping rain [TS]

01:03:16   before chargers up [TS]

01:03:17   yes you sort of build it up to the point [TS]

01:03:19   where you realize there's your kids in [TS]

01:03:22   there alone and it's getting dark and [TS]

01:03:23   they're waiting for the dad we should [TS]

01:03:25   have shown up already [TS]

01:03:26   exactly and it's and it's raining that's [TS]

01:03:28   why that's why i love i absolutely love [TS]

01:03:30   that scene just because of the the way [TS]

01:03:32   it's set up i mean the just the [TS]

01:03:34   exquisite loneliness of that single [TS]

01:03:36   light and it has nothing else but the [TS]

01:03:39   darkness of the forest all around [TS]

01:03:40   there's no sound but for the rain dad [TS]

01:03:43   hasn't come on the first bus in there [TS]

01:03:45   exactly a bus comes a bus comes and it's [TS]

01:03:48   not his and am I getting on my own like [TS]

01:03:51   and it's you think for a second Oh dad [TS]

01:03:53   took a bike we have no idea where he got [TS]

01:03:55   a bike but here it comes on the bike [TS]

01:03:57   nope not dad and me is getting sleepy [TS]

01:03:59   make it totally yes sorry is concerned [TS]

01:04:02   about me getting sleepy because now [TS]

01:04:03   you're gonna have a sleepy kid on your [TS]

01:04:05   hands too [TS]

01:04:05   they're at their absolute most [TS]

01:04:07   vulnerable in that scene and that's I [TS]

01:04:09   think that's that's why totoro shows up [TS]

01:04:10   because right at that point that point [TS]

01:04:12   soft skin needs needs that to get her [TS]

01:04:15   through like the same way that may was [TS]

01:04:17   more able to you [TS]

01:04:18   channel you know her her anxiety into [TS]

01:04:21   this total thing that later no one else [TS]

01:04:23   could see that now many is that now sox [TS]

01:04:25   she's there and she's got me into a lot [TS]

01:04:26   of responsibility I think you mean [TS]

01:04:28   that's why totoro chooses to appear to [TS]

01:04:31   them then [TS]

01:04:31   well but that's the thing it doesn't [TS]

01:04:32   matter which it doesn't really matter [TS]

01:04:34   which is like I'm not married to one [TS]

01:04:35   interpretation but both of them work [TS]

01:04:37   perfectly well and sure you don't you [TS]

01:04:39   don't doesn't take anything from either [TS]

01:04:40   one if even when he does show up for [TS]

01:04:42   whatever reason and you know and he eat [TS]

01:04:45   it you look down and the thing we always [TS]

01:04:48   notice because Wolverine fans is his [TS]

01:04:51   giant claws she looks she's got the [TS]

01:04:53   umbrella is kind of concealing and you [TS]

01:04:55   look down you see this horrific looking [TS]

01:04:57   creature standing next to her [TS]

01:04:59   that's what I got the sloth from those [TS]

01:05:00   in Norma's right [TS]

01:05:02   oh and it's so incongruous too because [TS]

01:05:04   we've met these magical creatures in the [TS]

01:05:06   tree right there there treif spirit they [TS]

01:05:09   live in the trees they collect acorns [TS]

01:05:11   all that stuff and then it's so funny to [TS]

01:05:14   let's not forget that too that when he [TS]

01:05:16   shows up here it's it's like what I'm [TS]

01:05:18   waiting for a blood test which is [TS]

01:05:19   probably waiting for a bus but there's [TS]

01:05:22   only one they want damn it almost is it [TS]

01:05:24   almost a shot like a horror film I mean [TS]

01:05:26   you'd probably just about ram to go [TS]

01:05:30   speaking foreign films that happened oh [TS]

01:05:31   but yeah you just see this like this [TS]

01:05:33   enormous claw kind of come in from the [TS]

01:05:36   super started sneaking around the corner [TS]

01:05:38   of the umbrella it's it's but think [TS]

01:05:40   about it I mean I'm but it all the [TS]

01:05:42   there's all this little pendulum of like [TS]

01:05:45   a little bit scary and a little bit of [TS]

01:05:48   relief it you know it isn't like you [TS]

01:05:51   know Freddy Krueger's gonna jump into [TS]

01:05:53   your dream or something just a little [TS]

01:05:54   bit of scary and then a little bit of [TS]

01:05:56   relief [TS]

01:05:56   so in this case I mean to me one of my [TS]

01:05:58   favorite scenes in the corner one of my [TS]

01:05:59   favorite animated gifs is when totoro [TS]

01:06:02   jumps and you know first it's kinda [TS]

01:06:04   scary though you're thinking is he mad [TS]

01:06:06   he like some kind of confused incredible [TS]

01:06:08   hulk eric is everything he says is very [TS]

01:06:09   loud and deep enough yeah but he's like [TS]

01:06:12   always it that he's never been in rain [TS]

01:06:13   18 he's angry and you're like what [TS]

01:06:15   what's going on with the rain and then [TS]

01:06:17   he jumps up in the air like the [TS]

01:06:18   wonderful total away where he just jump [TS]

01:06:20   straight up in the air comes down and [TS]

01:06:23   then start getting that idiot grin on [TS]

01:06:24   his face exactly is it has miyazaki grin [TS]

01:06:27   and then the arm and then the girls if [TS]

01:06:30   memory serves the girls [TS]

01:06:31   as if they're on a tier board go flying [TS]

01:06:33   up in the air when you have the ground [TS]

01:06:35   and then all the rain comes down and [TS]

01:06:37   you're like oh my God he's being playful [TS]

01:06:39   like for no reason at all he's being [TS]

01:06:41   playful and my favorite horror fixing in [TS]

01:06:44   this movie is that obviously again with [TS]

01:06:46   the goat and other things in miyazaki [TS]

01:06:47   movies they will very frequently render [TS]

01:06:50   some things startlingly realistic it's [TS]

01:06:52   very pleasant but is accurate and this [TS]

01:06:54   one it's when the cat buses in the tree [TS]

01:06:56   with the girls at the end they could get [TS]

01:06:57   the hospital they're sitting up in the [TS]

01:07:00   tree looking down at the mom who's [TS]

01:07:02   laughing everything's fine and they show [TS]

01:07:03   the shot of the catbus in the tree with [TS]

01:07:05   two girls and this cat bus has claws [TS]

01:07:07   everywhere like it's wrapped its [TS]

01:07:10   multiple limbs around this tree and it's [TS]

01:07:12   just this giant Claude grinning heart [TS]

01:07:14   was too cute little girls having a [TS]

01:07:16   branch 13 frame that sometimes it looks [TS]

01:07:18   like something out of a nightmare and [TS]

01:07:20   that's because again when you're a [TS]

01:07:22   little kid a lot of things that are [TS]

01:07:24   normal and that you're comfortable with [TS]

01:07:26   still have this edge of like scariness [TS]

01:07:29   about them because things things look we [TS]

01:07:31   really totally let's look at it like a [TS]

01:07:33   turnip head turnip head and cat howls [TS]

01:07:35   moving castle has that same like like at [TS]

01:07:38   once delightful and completely [TS]

01:07:40   disturbing like giant smile [TS]

01:07:42   I you know I when I when I first moved [TS]

01:07:43   to my neighborhood which is a lot of [TS]

01:07:45   Asian people in it [TS]

01:07:46   I i was asking some friends of mine like [TS]

01:07:48   it's really strange like nobody smiles [TS]

01:07:49   around here when you meet them and I [TS]

01:07:51   don't know this is accurate but my [TS]

01:07:52   boyfriend says well in i guess i'm just [TS]

01:07:55   rip it supposedly in in China at it was [TS]

01:07:58   considered a sign of weakness but you [TS]

01:08:00   like you wouldn't open your mouth you [TS]

01:08:01   wouldn't show your teeth you wouldn't [TS]

01:08:03   it's just you remain kind of mute about [TS]

01:08:05   it and I don't know that's that's [TS]

01:08:07   applicable to hear but there's something [TS]

01:08:09   really somebody who's smiling that much [TS]

01:08:12   it looks like John Wayne Gacy you know [TS]

01:08:14   is open yeah yeah it's got they've got [TS]

01:08:17   to be up to something but didn't think I [TS]

01:08:19   you know it's weird it's like yet notice [TS]

01:08:21   the way that sake is animated she moves [TS]

01:08:25   she moves very confidently she has very [TS]

01:08:28   kind of light footfall but she is also [TS]

01:08:30   kind of a weird hesitation to the way [TS]

01:08:32   that she moves like when she shall run a [TS]

01:08:34   little bit and she'll stop and it will [TS]

01:08:35   be this weird hesitation and i love the [TS]

01:08:37   scene when she first steps on the catbus [TS]

01:08:39   because let's be honest she's stepping [TS]

01:08:41   onto a giant what eight-legged can just [TS]

01:08:44   that into a giant eight [TS]

01:08:45   like it's going to the little little [TS]

01:08:47   sound and she gets in but in around she [TS]

01:08:50   gets in and it's a cat like the floor [TS]

01:08:54   gives she sits down and kind of scooches [TS]

01:08:56   into the seat but which is an [TS]

01:08:58   abbreviation she's in it to super creepy [TS]

01:09:00   but it's a great baby [TS]

01:09:02   maybe the most by far the most [TS]

01:09:04   disconcerting thing about the catbus is [TS]

01:09:06   towards the end when he jumps off the [TS]

01:09:08   electrical wires and you can very [TS]

01:09:10   clearly see that it is a boy cat bus and [TS]

01:09:14   you know it's it's a tomcat bus [TS]

01:09:16   oh boy is it ever I did not notice that [TS]

01:09:19   I'm gonna go back is hosted the sorts of [TS]

01:09:21   things that i noticed because i am a [TS]

01:09:22   student film [TS]

01:09:23   yes good enough thanks to view CA and it [TS]

01:09:29   speaks to a culture that's not concerned [TS]

01:09:31   he brings fresh eyes [TS]

01:09:32   Jason fresh ideas what it is they put me [TS]

01:09:35   his head in front of the the final i [TS]

01:09:37   noticed that it was those tables heart [TS]

01:09:39   fully framed [TS]

01:09:40   yep if only they had done so for the cat [TS]

01:09:42   and in Japan they just all get naked and [TS]

01:09:45   take a bath together here we don't do [TS]

01:09:47   that i don't think i don't think my kids [TS]

01:09:48   found that to start because they brought [TS]

01:09:49   home and make it all over the house and [TS]

01:09:50   you know where were ya i'm still not [TS]

01:09:54   ready like questions about Japanese [TS]

01:09:55   culture for when I was a little kid I [TS]

01:09:57   would have found that extremely strange [TS]

01:09:59   i mean we have a different kind of [TS]

01:10:00   household and then when I was a little [TS]

01:10:02   kid thank God but but but also i mean [TS]

01:10:04   think about that think about explain to [TS]

01:10:06   your kid like oh wait a minute [TS]

01:10:07   so this house is is literally falling [TS]

01:10:09   apart regardless of the translation this [TS]

01:10:11   house is not in great condition [TS]

01:10:13   it may have it may have a variety of [TS]

01:10:15   different ghosts it's definitely got [TS]

01:10:16   acorns falling from the ceiling and a [TS]

01:10:18   really gonna be old lady in it but it's [TS]

01:10:20   got what two she's got to do bathtubs [TS]

01:10:22   and like a swinging to hurt they have an [TS]

01:10:25   entire like it seems good third of the [TS]

01:10:26   house is dedicated to the bathroom [TS]

01:10:28   that's because as least in my [TS]

01:10:29   understanding in Japan bathing can be a [TS]

01:10:32   much more social experience it's more [TS]

01:10:33   than just washing yourself it's like a [TS]

01:10:35   hangout thing right now is that accurate [TS]

01:10:38   I'll alternate you are an animal and all [TS]

01:10:40   hang out the tub as far as I could tell [TS]

01:10:41   he's all laid out i think it's i thought [TS]

01:10:44   it was I thought it was really sweet [TS]

01:10:45   that was 1i think one of the least [TS]

01:10:46   confusing things too [TS]

01:10:47   I didn't really explain that you know [TS]

01:10:49   that right that's just like i like the [TS]

01:10:51   fact that they're in the carbon and the [TS]

01:10:53   had the wind is blowing the house and [TS]

01:10:54   then the father to spend another screams [TS]

01:10:57   are spots more elastic scared just to [TS]

01:11:00   scare away he looks insane when he does [TS]

01:11:02   it John but she looks a little crazy [TS]

01:11:03   when he does he's totally bent I've [TS]

01:11:05   pointed this out he is completely off [TS]

01:11:07   his rocker [TS]

01:11:08   I think that's a cultural thing though [TS]

01:11:09   i'm just guessing i'm not i have no idea [TS]

01:11:11   of insanity and adult males no no like [TS]

01:11:14   the whole idea that you will if you're [TS]

01:11:16   that if you're scared that you will [TS]

01:11:17   scare away the spirits by yourself [TS]

01:11:19   fierce and it's an activity to do with [TS]

01:11:22   little kids who are scared to you know [TS]

01:11:24   like what if we just make loud noises [TS]

01:11:26   the scariest one way but in general is [TS]

01:11:28   likely you're in a rickety house and its [TS]

01:11:29   really windy and when it gets really [TS]

01:11:31   windy outside young children worried [TS]

01:11:33   that the house is gonna fall down right [TS]

01:11:34   in this case with the shots from the [TS]

01:11:36   outside maybe the tin roof is going to [TS]

01:11:37   come off or whatever but like that just [TS]

01:11:40   the sound design and that scene of like [TS]

01:11:41   she's outside gathering wood and the [TS]

01:11:43   wind blows out of her hand and the [TS]

01:11:45   difference in sound from going outside [TS]

01:11:47   getting the wood to being inside and be [TS]

01:11:49   like the comfort of Okinawa inside the [TS]

01:11:51   sheltered place and it's comma and then [TS]

01:11:53   I'm in the bath with my dad but then [TS]

01:11:54   it's still a little bit scary in the [TS]

01:11:56   house shakes but at least we're all here [TS]

01:11:57   together that's when she like rinses off [TS]

01:11:59   and jumps back into the tub so she can [TS]

01:12:00   be closer to her dad [TS]

01:12:01   that's all I thought that was all very [TS]

01:12:03   sweet and he's probably out probably [TS]

01:12:05   would come off as more creepy if not [TS]

01:12:08   have done in a western movie baby you [TS]

01:12:12   know i don't i'm sorry the translations [TS]

01:12:14   wrong but I love that scene i love that [TS]

01:12:17   ya know that's a good dog like I was it [TS]

01:12:19   has characterizations that the other one [TS]

01:12:20   that stands out for me and the dub is [TS]

01:12:21   the part where they make up a [TS]

01:12:24   description of the like you're hearing [TS]

01:12:27   Sasuke's voice as the mother reads her [TS]

01:12:29   letter [TS]

01:12:29   here's picture of me as a crap there's a [TS]

01:12:31   crab is not which is not it was like it [TS]

01:12:34   has to do with like her squatting down [TS]

01:12:35   in front of the plants and in the sub [TS]

01:12:37   and assuming the subs accurate but in [TS]

01:12:40   the dub it's like oh she's getting [TS]

01:12:41   crabby and here's a picture of her as a [TS]

01:12:43   craft like but when they choose to ended [TS]

01:12:47   in the dub make a different joke then [TS]

01:12:50   was in the original movie if the [TS]

01:12:51   different joke is also funny thumbs up [TS]

01:12:53   like I'm not saying has to be a slave [TS]

01:12:55   Ashley translated from the original [TS]

01:12:58   japanese i think the the delivery like a [TS]

01:13:00   delivery on creepy is adorable i think [TS]

01:13:02   which is why we keep repeating it and [TS]

01:13:04   things like here's a picture of me as a [TS]

01:13:05   crap that line crack me up [TS]

01:13:06   the first time I saw the dump and I [TS]

01:13:08   still smile when I see it so it's not as [TS]

01:13:10   if you have to you know my daughter [TS]

01:13:11   still my daughter still points it out [TS]

01:13:13   every time which means no it's not it's [TS]

01:13:15   made an impression [TS]

01:13:16   yeah well what about I mean I'm to show [TS]

01:13:21   but but well percent for me this also [TS]

01:13:23   really starts to come together there is [TS]

01:13:25   the like I think it's admittedly like [TS]

01:13:27   the really dramatic idea that like [TS]

01:13:29   there's a moment where we're not sure [TS]

01:13:31   what's going on with me but I for me [TS]

01:13:34   like it's all of that slow burn and you [TS]

01:13:37   know the intellectual payoff of this i [TS]

01:13:41   don't know there's the when finally when [TS]

01:13:43   she finally goes and she's asking the [TS]

01:13:45   totoro for help [TS]

01:13:46   it'sit's that everything from then on in [TS]

01:13:49   the movie is is not merely like [TS]

01:13:51   intellectually satisfying and as we say [TS]

01:13:52   charming it's completely exhilarating to [TS]

01:13:55   me when he when he jumps up out of the [TS]

01:13:57   tree i just want to pump my fist like [TS]

01:13:59   this is so cool and you know anyone he [TS]

01:14:01   is a he puts the clawed hand around her [TS]

01:14:04   and goes straight up the tree and and [TS]

01:14:06   calls the catbus and it's just one thing [TS]

01:14:08   after another after that I just find it [TS]

01:14:10   they pass over the people that are [TS]

01:14:12   looking for me it's just I think it's [TS]

01:14:14   wonderful years a bit that actually [TS]

01:14:16   would call sharma's when the to the [TS]

01:14:18   catbus fines may and the two of them run [TS]

01:14:21   from opposite sides in the front of the [TS]

01:14:23   campuses face and I the Icefall did you [TS]

01:14:25   oh yeah and they meet in the middle on [TS]

01:14:27   that level cap bus goes cross-eyed that [TS]

01:14:29   and the other little Q of like you know [TS]

01:14:30   they find the corner of the window so [TS]

01:14:32   Allah says it looks as to mommy and then [TS]

01:14:34   they cut the suit the scene of the [TS]

01:14:35   catbus running and profile which is the [TS]

01:14:37   one part time they do kind of a [TS]

01:14:39   bombastic musical crew and the catbus is [TS]

01:14:41   just running and they're both on it and [TS]

01:14:43   they're both smiling and they're both on [TS]

01:14:44   the fuzzy cats eat like who doesn't want [TS]

01:14:46   to be inside a fuzzy cat perfectly [TS]

01:14:48   contented ok as music plays as you race [TS]

01:14:51   yeah like that'll do it is the ultimate [TS]

01:14:53   you know the ultimate high for a 5 into [TS]

01:14:57   your own girl but I hope that what [TS]

01:14:59   they're doing is going this is what [TS]

01:15:00   bothered me they're sitting there at the [TS]

01:15:02   hospital I mean obviously what's [TS]

01:15:03   important to them is that they check up [TS]

01:15:05   on mom [TS]

01:15:05   meanwhile there's a whole city dragging [TS]

01:15:08   the lake that thinks that island is dead [TS]

01:15:10   and I trying to find your peace to that [TS]

01:15:13   is that the darkest part of this movie [TS]

01:15:14   for me is and the kids don't notice [TS]

01:15:16   is that they're they're searching the [TS]

01:15:17   pond with poles yeah and I think kids [TS]

01:15:19   think they're gonna they're searching [TS]

01:15:21   for the girl to find them know they're [TS]

01:15:22   searching for major body because you [TS]

01:15:24   don't find anything in a lake with a [TS]

01:15:25   pole that's alive [TS]

01:15:27   no no thatthat's that dark that's the [TS]

01:15:30   darkest spotted this entire movies is [TS]

01:15:33   that moment of like well maybe she [TS]

01:15:34   drowned [TS]

01:15:35   yeah and like and sasuke running as the [TS]

01:15:37   Sun sets with her dirty knees and taking [TS]

01:15:39   off her shoes and like you just feel [TS]

01:15:41   like I can feel her heart beating don't [TS]

01:15:44   know how long have a lot how long have [TS]

01:15:46   you lost one of your children like the [TS]

01:15:48   longest I've think I've lost my kids for [TS]

01:15:50   maybe like three minutes and 20 seconds [TS]

01:15:52   or something that three words in 20 [TS]

01:15:54   seconds is like the amount i know it's [TS]

01:15:56   not the same thing I had a 30 seconds 30 [TS]

01:15:58   seconds at a target two weeks ago that i [TS]

01:16:01   thought was gonna have a heart attack my [TS]

01:16:02   son disappeared on us at universal [TS]

01:16:05   islands of adventure he was playing in [TS]

01:16:07   one of the one of the play areas and [TS]

01:16:10   it's the one right by the raft ride and [TS]

01:16:12   he disappeared on us and was gone for it [TS]

01:16:14   must have been 20 to 30 minutes before [TS]

01:16:17   we local how many and by the time I [TS]

01:16:19   found him he was maybe a half way around [TS]

01:16:24   the park you know it's just kind of set [TS]

01:16:25   up in a big circle y absolutely [TS]

01:16:27   terrifying and did have some corn did [TS]

01:16:31   not have corn [TS]

01:16:33   I wish he had I could have used some [TS]

01:16:35   corn after I said that would have been [TS]

01:16:36   good [TS]

01:16:37   yeah it's it it is a yeah there's [TS]

01:16:40   indefinitely resonates having having [TS]

01:16:42   just gone through that fairly recently [TS]

01:16:43   because you know it was the raft ride on [TS]

01:16:45   your mind your mind because I mean like [TS]

01:16:47   it's like how he could easily have [TS]

01:16:49   toppled in nobody would have heard it [TS]

01:16:51   because it's fairly loud through there [TS]

01:16:52   and my wife was in a part of town today [TS]

01:16:55   where the find my friends like she [TS]

01:16:58   wasn't getting a signal and I should [TS]

01:17:00   said this is where she was one hour ago [TS]

01:17:02   and i immediately thought she was dead [TS]

01:17:04   yes that's exactly where your head goes [TS]

01:17:06   I've done that yes exactly we had was [TS]

01:17:08   like okay so in this case a minute ago [TS]

01:17:11   on my kid was looking at [TS]

01:17:14   at war machine masks in the toy section [TS]

01:17:18   i said let's go i took a few steps and [TS]

01:17:20   now i'm pretty sure like she's entirely [TS]

01:17:22   now they're Japanese farmers with exact [TS]

01:17:25   expenditure precisely [TS]

01:17:28   yeah yeah I'm okay I'm but I'm i realize [TS]

01:17:30   we're probably going a little longer [TS]

01:17:31   right we're running out of time yes go [TS]

01:17:33   ahead i just wanted to I don't want to [TS]

01:17:34   dwell i mean i think i feel i feel so [TS]

01:17:37   silly now because I consider myself a [TS]

01:17:39   scholar of this film we're really maybe [TS]

01:17:42   I don't know fan or super fan but now I [TS]

01:17:43   realize how much how different it is in [TS]

01:17:46   the as as 70 siracusa would say the [TS]

01:17:49   subversive the dub the father [TS]

01:17:52   wow so different the mother might my [TS]

01:17:55   wife does a couple really good at [TS]

01:17:57   impersonations just a great [TS]

01:17:59   impersonation of of uh well all you need [TS]

01:18:04   to know here she does a great [TS]

01:18:05   impersonation of the mother from from [TS]

01:18:08   this movie you know it LOL her really [TS]

01:18:11   super weird line in the double belly i [TS]

01:18:13   want to get i'm going to get better and [TS]

01:18:16   come [TS]

01:18:16   oh yeah and she and and like an American [TS]

01:18:19   movie normally you hear someone speaking [TS]

01:18:21   like that and you go oh my god they're [TS]

01:18:22   so gonna die [TS]

01:18:24   uh yeah they're crazy and and the mother [TS]

01:18:26   the mother in the infant in the non dub [TS]

01:18:29   version is so much more saying she [TS]

01:18:31   sounds so much one of the sake sounds [TS]

01:18:34   younger than the dub the father he [TS]

01:18:38   sounds like maybe not quite as smart and [TS]

01:18:40   a little sterner equally crazy but [TS]

01:18:42   anyway I don't want that so I'm terribly [TS]

01:18:45   sick to be honest I think she just wants [TS]

01:18:46   a break from her insane husband what she [TS]

01:18:49   was she writing when they bring in which [TS]

01:18:50   to raise their journal what is she [TS]

01:18:51   writing it was your running everything [TS]

01:18:54   when they could they come in and just [TS]

01:18:55   scribble something in a notebook [TS]

01:18:57   I'm just saying there might be something [TS]

01:18:58   going on here dear diary I am so glad [TS]

01:19:01   i'm not at that house right [TS]

01:19:03   my husband is so irresponsible i hope [TS]

01:19:06   the kids aren't dead but i'm glad to [TS]

01:19:08   finally have two minutes to my cells in [TS]

01:19:10   the tub my kids probably more corn that [TS]

01:19:13   I hate corn [TS]

01:19:14   why did you bring me some sort of rotted [TS]

01:19:17   out house and here come the farmers a [TS]

01:19:18   sloth [TS]

01:19:19   yes the sort of thing he do that's it i [TS]

01:19:23   had a dream tonight of a monster that [TS]

01:19:24   lives in the trees and killed the [TS]

01:19:27   where's my corn I hope we have none of [TS]

01:19:29   that it's really all the moms story is [TS]

01:19:31   heard in their dreams of murder maybe [TS]

01:19:33   funny feeling back in Tokyo he was doing [TS]

01:19:35   all this stuff though you know you just [TS]

01:19:36   let her wander around Tokyo and in [TS]

01:19:39   worship a tree found go down to the [TS]

01:19:41   flower shop this work there for a while [TS]

01:19:44   so Steve before we go [TS]

01:19:47   yeah we made you so we made you watch [TS]

01:19:49   this crazy movie you have any other any [TS]

01:19:51   other thoughts about every other than I [TS]

01:19:52   mean it seems like you had a pretty ok [TS]

01:19:54   time you know like I said I was charmed [TS]

01:19:56   by it i really enjoyed watching it i'm [TS]

01:19:58   still not sure how much I like it to be [TS]

01:20:02   honest and maybe it's just that I'm I'm [TS]

01:20:04   ruined by American films you know I've [TS]

01:20:07   seen too many since your first means [TS]

01:20:08   your first miyazaki my first miyazaki at [TS]

01:20:10   all wow that India is a long it's a long [TS]

01:20:13   ramp to figure it out i think Twitter is [TS]

01:20:15   actually the most challenging for adults [TS]

01:20:16   because it doesn't have doesn't conform [TS]

01:20:20   or anything but like I think it's the [TS]

01:20:21   most pure miyazaki movie in that once [TS]

01:20:25   you watch the whole bunch of you can [TS]

01:20:26   kind of figure out where he's going with [TS]

01:20:28   all his stuff [TS]

01:20:29   this is like the the sort of meditative [TS]

01:20:32   distillation of it all like it's all [TS]

01:20:34   there in the movie like but it doesn't [TS]

01:20:36   just doesn't seem like there's a world I [TS]

01:20:37   think this movie is the type of thing [TS]

01:20:38   that will unfold for you in an [TS]

01:20:41   unconventional way over time if you give [TS]

01:20:43   it a chance and it does help to watch it [TS]

01:20:45   repeatedly with kids who relate to it in [TS]

01:20:47   a different way but it's not it's yeah i [TS]

01:20:51   think it's both the most challenging and [TS]

01:20:53   the most pure of his movies because it [TS]

01:20:55   it issues a lot of the stuff that we [TS]

01:20:57   normally expect to have a movie when [TS]

01:20:59   that's all gone all you're left with is [TS]

01:21:01   this weird center you just don't want to [TS]

01:21:02   do with it you just kind of bobble in [TS]

01:21:03   your hands all set for me the problem is [TS]

01:21:06   that because so little seems to be [TS]

01:21:09   happening at any given time [TS]

01:21:10   the closest point of reference for me is [TS]

01:21:13   some of these preschool TV shows that [TS]

01:21:15   come on where there's I don't know some [TS]

01:21:16   sort of anthropomorphic creature and you [TS]

01:21:18   just kind of wanders around and you know [TS]

01:21:21   nothing much happens in those and in [TS]

01:21:22   this almost felt to me like they took [TS]

01:21:24   three of those episodes of some you know [TS]

01:21:27   preschoolers show and stuck them [TS]

01:21:29   back-to-back you know there's one where [TS]

01:21:30   they move into the house and they know [TS]

01:21:31   there's the one where they frolic with [TS]

01:21:32   the totoro totally this is the one where [TS]

01:21:34   may got lost and [TS]

01:21:36   and they just clamp them together and on [TS]

01:21:39   the second watch through some of that [TS]

01:21:40   had gone away and i think it will [TS]

01:21:42   continue to as i watch it more but that [TS]

01:21:44   I think the main thing for me is I'm [TS]

01:21:46   gonna have to have to sit down and watch [TS]

01:21:48   with my kids and see what they yeah yeah [TS]

01:21:49   and hopefully they haven't been ruined [TS]

01:21:51   by too much disney well and I think [TS]

01:21:53   about it the more I think the more you [TS]

01:21:54   watch it the more the superstructure of [TS]

01:21:57   the like that the mother situation and [TS]

01:22:00   the kids the more like those mountains [TS]

01:22:02   that are underneath this notion of [TS]

01:22:03   stillwater start to like you start to [TS]

01:22:05   sense those mountains under the bottom [TS]

01:22:06   like the ocean is like one big flat [TS]

01:22:08   thing we don't realize this huge [TS]

01:22:09   mountain ranges under their it and I [TS]

01:22:10   think the more I watch this movie the [TS]

01:22:12   more like this it's not a series of [TS]

01:22:14   small little skin even looks like one [TS]

01:22:16   there's this huge mountain range [TS]

01:22:17   underneath the surface of all the stuff [TS]

01:22:19   and that as i watch it over and over [TS]

01:22:21   again I just feel that thing underneath [TS]

01:22:23   everything that's there [TS]

01:22:24   yeah more than that the service of which [TS]

01:22:26   I continue to enjoy and it's fun and [TS]

01:22:28   everything but like that's what I think [TS]

01:22:29   happens i repeated viewings that I all I [TS]

01:22:32   see now i watch this movie is the little [TS]

01:22:34   sensory moments and the underwater [TS]

01:22:36   mountain range that's what I that's what [TS]

01:22:37   i get when i watch the movie now I did [TS]

01:22:39   pick up on that stuff but it was it's so [TS]

01:22:41   subtle that you know maybe my edited [TS]

01:22:43   yeah just keep watching because like the [TS]

01:22:45   big lebowski i would actually recommend [TS]

01:22:46   I've only seen I think 45 miyazaki [TS]

01:22:50   movies but I mean watching I'm always [TS]

01:22:52   disinclined to say we you know you're [TS]

01:22:54   watching five times [TS]

01:22:55   see also be hope ascii but I mean 22 [TS]

01:22:58   others off the top of my head I mean [TS]

01:22:59   they know da is spirited away which is [TS]

01:23:01   really quite something and really in [TS]

01:23:04   some ways really not for kids in a lot [TS]

01:23:06   of ways yeah sorry that's pretty was [TS]

01:23:08   pretty challenging to the it was good [TS]

01:23:12   one if you really want like wow this is [TS]

01:23:14   this is pretty dope Rivera kind of stuff [TS]

01:23:31   in the sky is is a you know maybe snow [TS]

01:23:34   incredibles but it's a really I think [TS]

01:23:36   it's a terrific adventure story and [TS]

01:24:17   was the same guy i mean you get [TS]

01:24:18   aesthetically that it was the same guy [TS]

01:24:19   but it is very straightforward as you [TS]

01:24:23   know except for the fact that has a [TS]

01:24:24   female protagonist that doesn't marry [TS]

01:24:26   someone at the end like not notice the [TS]

01:24:28   color cast most guys are both kids [TS]

01:24:30   adventure movies that have something [TS]

01:24:32   deeper to them that you will feel [TS]

01:24:33   comfortable you'll have something to [TS]

01:24:34   hang your hat on and both of those [TS]

01:24:36   movies where as spirited away you will [TS]
