The Incomparable

159: Full Shatner

00:00:00   the incomparable number 159 September [TS]

00:00:11   everybody welcome back to be [TS]

00:00:12   uncomfortable i'm your host Jason Snell [TS]

00:00:14   and when we last left the uncomfortable [TS]

00:00:17   we had done the first two rounds of our [TS]

00:00:18   second movie draft where we pick a bunch [TS]

00:00:22   of movies that we think that you should [TS]

00:00:23   see and a sort of virtual film festival [TS]

00:00:27   so we have the first two rounds last [TS]

00:00:28   week seven people seven movies each that [TS]

00:00:31   was fourteen we're going to do three [TS]

00:00:33   more rounds a little bit faster pace [TS]

00:00:36   than last week it couldn't really be [TS]

00:00:38   much slower my participants are in the [TS]

00:00:41   order in which they pick any odd co [TS]

00:00:43   David lower Steve let's Monty Ashley [TS]

00:00:47   John siracusa dan morgan and then i will [TS]

00:00:50   pick last as the host anyway let's pick [TS]

00:00:53   it up in round three [TS]

00:00:55   we're back up to the third pic so Andy [TS]

00:00:57   it's your turn [TS]

00:00:58   linking back to pelham 123 which one of [TS]

00:01:00   the reasons i like was because it's like [TS]

00:01:02   all these character actors this is a [TS]

00:01:04   more recent movie that the big year from [TS]

00:01:06   2011 which one of the reasons why i have [TS]

00:01:11   cable is that it's there's a great it's [TS]

00:01:14   great when they just simply program [TS]

00:01:16   these movies that maybe you saw the [TS]

00:01:18   trailer when was released but there was [TS]

00:01:21   just nothing to motivate you to see it [TS]

00:01:23   and then by the time I hit video you've [TS]

00:01:25   totally forgotten all about it [TS]

00:01:27   this really is a terrific little movie [TS]

00:01:29   the basic premise is that if you're [TS]

00:01:33   serious birdwatcher maybe one of the [TS]

00:01:35   things on your bucket list is to do this [TS]

00:01:36   thing called a big year which means you [TS]

00:01:38   spend entire calendar year from January [TS]

00:01:40   first December 31st trying to spot as [TS]

00:01:43   many species of bird in North America as [TS]

00:01:46   possible and there are records for this [TS]

00:01:49   and it's it's really intense thing so [TS]

00:01:51   it's about Jack Black and steve martin [TS]

00:01:54   and owen wilson as three different [TS]

00:01:55   burgers are all having a big year at the [TS]

00:01:57   same time Owen Wilson holds like this [TS]

00:02:00   what was often thought of as this [TS]

00:02:02   unbreakable record of some 130 birds in [TS]

00:02:05   one year but this is this is the year [TS]

00:02:07   that El Nino has changes like really [TS]

00:02:09   change where birds are going to be [TS]

00:02:10   landing and so now both steve martin [TS]

00:02:13   jack black think that I've always wanted [TS]

00:02:15   to do this and I love burning and maybe [TS]

00:02:17   this is a good year for reverse to do [TS]

00:02:18   this and as I'm explaining this you're [TS]

00:02:21   probably imagining that at one point [TS]

00:02:22   Steve Martin will walk the club [TS]

00:02:24   hanging onto the hood of a runaway RV [TS]

00:02:26   that will then throw him into a latrine [TS]

00:02:28   or something like that and it's nothing [TS]

00:02:30   like that because it's like when I look [TS]

00:02:33   for saying about selling it's like every [TS]

00:02:35   obvious joke that's right there ready to [TS]

00:02:37   be reached and picked up they leave it [TS]

00:02:38   there and they really go into even [TS]

00:02:41   though they maintain that as a comedy [TS]

00:02:43   about three people who love this sport [TS]

00:02:45   one of whom is super good and three [TS]

00:02:48   people who are into this big year for [TS]

00:02:50   very different reasons and they go [TS]

00:02:52   through all these little adventures and [TS]

00:02:54   they become different the they sort of [TS]

00:02:56   learned something about their own lives [TS]

00:02:57   by the end of the year even though it is [TS]

00:02:59   funny [TS]

00:03:00   now the reason why connects back to [TS]

00:03:01   pelham 123 is that one of the things I [TS]

00:03:03   love about it is that it's just [TS]

00:03:04   chock-full of character actors and [TS]

00:03:07   character roles and owen wilson was in [TS]

00:03:11   tenenbaums also but also also anjelica [TS]

00:03:13   huston Anjelica Huston is in this movie [TS]

00:03:15   as the owner of a boat who does that [TS]

00:03:18   does birding tours call Danny aquat Jim [TS]

00:03:22   Parsons from from big bang theory is the [TS]

00:03:25   the operator of a burning blog Brian [TS]

00:03:28   Dennehy on the kings of character actors [TS]

00:03:30   jack black's dad and one of my favorite [TS]

00:03:34   character character athletic directors [TS]

00:03:37   kevin Pollak does legs does the sort of [TS]

00:03:40   performance as the steve martin plays [TS]

00:03:43   CEO of a huge chemical corporation that [TS]

00:03:46   has been he's been trying to recover for [TS]

00:03:48   years but he keeps like not wanting to [TS]

00:03:50   retire so this is his way to say look [TS]

00:03:52   I'm definitely retiring kevin Pollak [TS]

00:03:54   plays like the one of his underlings who [TS]

00:03:56   you know that is now steering his [TS]

00:03:58   company and he has so few scenes but in [TS]

00:04:01   every single scene he delivers the goods [TS]

00:04:05   with just not even just with a couple [TS]

00:04:06   lines with one gesture with one thing [TS]

00:04:09   like that so I like i said i didn't [TS]

00:04:11   really I didn't see it until it came on [TS]

00:04:13   HBO and then the first time I saw like [TS]

00:04:15   the last 45 minutes of it i was so [TS]

00:04:18   charmed by how well drawn these [TS]

00:04:20   characters are how there really are no [TS]

00:04:23   enemies and there are no bad guys in [TS]

00:04:25   this movie it really is about these [TS]

00:04:27   people individually they interact with [TS]

00:04:28   each other but it really is how they [TS]

00:04:30   individually approach this and what this [TS]

00:04:32   big year represents to them and that [TS]

00:04:34   particular point in their lives [TS]

00:04:36   you will also let finally the the you [TS]

00:04:39   also noticed that the how carefully [TS]

00:04:41   every movies art-directed because of [TS]

00:04:43   course everyone has each of these [TS]

00:04:45   characters has a cell phone jack black [TS]

00:04:47   is like a working sort of working-class [TS]

00:04:48   guy he has like a contract flip phone [TS]

00:04:51   Steve Martin is the corporate exec and [TS]

00:04:54   he has a blackberry owen wilson is kind [TS]

00:04:56   of a jerk [TS]

00:04:57   jackass so he has an iphone yeah I can't [TS]

00:05:02   even see the movie so i can't i can't [TS]

00:05:03   speak to that but I I actually read the [TS]

00:05:05   book by Mark obama obama sick i think [TS]

00:05:09   his name is who's up to Sports [TS]

00:05:12   Illustrated writer great book i can say [TS]

00:05:15   that i could say that the book as the [TS]

00:05:16   book is a really enjoyable read and I [TS]

00:05:20   love books and movies about people who [TS]

00:05:22   are obsessed with things that most [TS]

00:05:24   people are not obsessed with its [TS]

00:05:26   fascinating i got i got the book [TS]

00:05:27   inaudible like after this to see like [TS]

00:05:29   what the real story was like and yet [TS]

00:05:30   it's like it you really do enjoy seeing [TS]

00:05:32   people who have a certain passion that [TS]

00:05:34   you do not share yet but who have an [TS]

00:05:36   ability to articulate that passion that [TS]

00:05:38   make you understand why they love this [TS]

00:05:40   thing since Ashley David your turn [TS]

00:05:42   well I wanted to pick a film that had [TS]

00:05:46   been adapted from a play cuz you know i [TS]

00:05:48   do theater so it's like malaria which [TS]

00:05:49   one to pick [TS]

00:05:50   and I mean there are a lot of really [TS]

00:05:53   good adaptations of plays but i decided [TS]

00:05:56   to go with night of the iguana which is [TS]

00:06:00   maybe not a great adaptation of a play [TS]

00:06:03   but it's kind of an interesting group of [TS]

00:06:06   people shove together in a hotel in [TS]

00:06:08   mexico during a tropical storm tropical [TS]

00:06:12   depression or something and an iguana [TS]

00:06:14   there is actually an iguana but the [TS]

00:06:18   reason it's interesting to me is partly [TS]

00:06:20   because you have Richard Burton in full [TS]

00:06:23   william shatner mode and I swear william [TS]

00:06:26   shatner got all his his stick from Bert [TS]

00:06:28   except Burton knew how to do it well and [TS]

00:06:32   I'd like I say that with love I love [TS]

00:06:34   with a panic but but the other thing [TS]

00:06:37   that's great about it is you have ava [TS]

00:06:38   gardner is the woman who owns the hotel [TS]

00:06:41   that all these people are at [TS]

00:06:43   you've got Richard Burton and it was [TS]

00:06:47   just after he had married elizabeth [TS]

00:06:49   taylor who is ragingly jealous that he [TS]

00:06:51   was going off to Mexico within the [TS]

00:06:53   gardener and you know John Huston [TS]

00:06:56   directing it and I forget who else there [TS]

00:06:59   was no sue lyon who was lolita in [TS]

00:07:03   Stanley Kubrick's film and apparently [TS]

00:07:06   the mood on the set was so happy and so [TS]

00:07:10   wonderful that John Huston bought a [TS]

00:07:14   pistol and specially engraved bullets [TS]

00:07:18   for each of the fat for burton and [TS]

00:07:20   taylor immigrant with all of their all [TS]

00:07:22   of the other people's names engraved on [TS]

00:07:24   the bullets and said here's your set [TS]

00:07:26   here you go and so it's kind of fun to [TS]

00:07:29   watch them all getting progressively [TS]

00:07:32   more manic as the film goes on because [TS]

00:07:35   you kind of wonder how much of it is [TS]

00:07:36   acting and how much of it is it they're [TS]

00:07:38   driving one another crazy but I mean it [TS]

00:07:42   you know it's it's a fun pressure cooker [TS]

00:07:44   everything watching characters go nuts [TS]

00:07:46   and you get to see Britain have a [TS]

00:07:48   breakdown like two-thirds of the way [TS]

00:07:51   through the film spits you know but yeah [TS]

00:07:54   I just it's it's fun thinking about the [TS]

00:07:57   poisonous atmosphere behind it and yet [TS]

00:07:59   it turned out and that bad film [TS]

00:08:01   alright night of the iguana great a not [TS]

00:08:04   bad film I'm not bad not bad film with [TS]

00:08:06   with full Shatner Shatner it's good [TS]

00:08:11   seeing your turn [TS]

00:08:12   alright having just talked about [TS]

00:08:14   poltergeists going to take a slight [TS]

00:08:16   departure with my next film which is [TS]

00:08:19   nineteen seventy sevens the many [TS]

00:08:22   adventures of winnie the pooh [TS]

00:08:24   no solid choice iced I totally support [TS]

00:08:29   and its choice i didn't find that scary [TS]

00:08:31   that scared me more than poltergeist I'm [TS]

00:08:33   not picking this just as an excuse to [TS]

00:08:35   work the word poo into my festival title [TS]

00:08:37   not just now I i love it because it's so [TS]

00:08:41   utterly gentle and totally removed from [TS]

00:08:44   worldly concerns it is the [TS]

00:08:46   quintessential childhood movie it does a [TS]

00:08:50   surprisingly faithful job I think of of [TS]

00:08:52   recreating the wonderful million books [TS]

00:08:54   the the art of course differ [TS]

00:08:56   substantially from the e/m Shepherd [TS]

00:08:57   style in the books but it has to because [TS]

00:08:59   those drawings are basically kind of [TS]

00:09:01   scribbly and I don't think they would [TS]

00:09:02   translate terribly well to the animation [TS]

00:09:04   so I think the character designs they [TS]

00:09:06   came up with were pretty darn good [TS]

00:09:07   considering but mostly I love this movie [TS]

00:09:11   because sterling Holloway voice is so [TS]

00:09:13   freaking perfect [TS]

00:09:14   oh yeah for winning the moon said this [TS]

00:09:17   movie came out when I was five and some [TS]

00:09:20   of the featurettes that were stitched [TS]

00:09:21   together to make it actually predate [TS]

00:09:23   that by several years so when I was very [TS]

00:09:25   small I had had a few disney records [TS]

00:09:29   that told the stories but the original [TS]

00:09:31   voice actors and i would put them on [TS]

00:09:33   when I went to bed so sterling Holloway [TS]

00:09:36   to me is the sound of being lulled to [TS]

00:09:38   sleep pike [TS]

00:09:39   yeah by that wonderful wonderful voice [TS]

00:09:41   and so really love the movie the [TS]

00:09:46   animation could be better i mean it's [TS]

00:09:48   it's from that weird period when it [TS]

00:09:49   looked like Disney animators warranty [TS]

00:09:51   racing their pencil lines for some [TS]

00:09:52   reason you know what happened kinda [TS]

00:09:55   throughout the mid-seventies and but if [TS]

00:09:58   you can ignore that it's it's a terrific [TS]

00:10:00   little movie that still works for me to [TS]

00:10:04   this day and it also contains that great [TS]

00:10:06   final line that never fails to make me [TS]

00:10:09   weep uncontrollably which is Christopher [TS]

00:10:13   Robin is leaving the Hundred Acre Wood [TS]

00:10:14   to go to school and he's trying to [TS]

00:10:16   explain that to poo butt pou of course [TS]

00:10:18   being a bear of very little brain [TS]

00:10:19   doesn't really understand and then the [TS]

00:10:22   the last scene kinda has been walking [TS]

00:10:24   off together into the evening and [TS]

00:10:25   sebastian cabot the narrator announces [TS]

00:10:27   wherever they go and whatever happens to [TS]

00:10:30   them on the way in there enchanted place [TS]

00:10:32   on top of the forest a little bear will [TS]

00:10:35   always be waiting [TS]

00:10:36   and I just remember seeing that part [TS]

00:10:39   when I was about 10 years old and [TS]

00:10:41   suddenly realizing oh everything I love [TS]

00:10:44   I will someday outgrow it works very [TS]

00:10:49   very well good strong always fantastic [TS]

00:10:51   you're absolutely right [TS]

00:10:52   he's great i wish i wish you'd done more [TS]

00:10:54   voiceover work yeah he's good in this [TS]

00:10:57   and he's good in the jungle book is [TS]

00:10:59   called the Python right i think he [TS]

00:11:01   actually shows up in Robin Hood as well [TS]

00:11:03   bit of an odd duck [TS]

00:11:05   yes little bit okay the many adventures [TS]

00:11:08   of winnie the pooh it's on the board on [TS]

00:11:11   the board [TS]

00:11:12   Monty what do you got third man no no [TS]

00:11:16   I'm getting about the fourth man but i [TS]

00:11:23   will briefly say that if you like the [TS]

00:11:24   third man i highly recommend you find [TS]

00:11:26   the radio drama the many lives of [TS]

00:11:29   harrier line now because it's a prequel [TS]

00:11:31   so he can be as evil as he wants and [TS]

00:11:34   there's an assumption that he'll [TS]

00:11:35   eventually get his comeuppance later in [TS]

00:11:38   the movie right and well and I love love [TS]

00:11:40   the every episode for the first couple [TS]

00:11:42   of episodes starts with you may remember [TS]

00:11:44   i was shot to death in a suit you do get [TS]

00:11:49   pretty sick of this is either [TS]

00:11:51   yes I'm gonna set his half-brother yeah [TS]

00:11:54   sick is it already what do you have for [TS]

00:11:56   us body [TS]

00:11:57   well my theme is clearly martial arts [TS]

00:11:59   movies that have miraculously gotten DVD [TS]

00:12:01   releases in the face of public scorn yes [TS]

00:12:03   I'm gonna get me one that just got a DVD [TS]

00:12:06   release a couple weeks ago [TS]

00:12:08   ninja three the domination you show up a [TS]

00:12:11   lot of gas stations don't you [TS]

00:12:13   now I go to scarecrow video the finest [TS]

00:12:16   video store in the world why do you ask [TS]

00:12:18   there you go it's inside a gas station [TS]

00:12:20   it i missed the first two ninjas [TS]

00:12:23   so you're gonna have to get me up to [TS]

00:12:24   speed well like all of the ninja movies [TS]

00:12:27   this has nothing to do with any of the [TS]

00:12:28   other ninja locate that it's accepted [TS]

00:12:31   star sho kosugi who was the only ninja [TS]

00:12:33   actor through the entire nineteen [TS]

00:12:35   eighties you might remember him from the [TS]

00:12:37   master [TS]

00:12:38   oh yes the master I didn't enjoy with [TS]

00:12:40   Lee Van Cleef is about the master you're [TS]

00:12:42   thinking over is a different yeah shoka [TS]

00:12:44   Sookie was the bad ninjas and also any [TS]

00:12:46   timely van cleef space wasn't visible [TS]

00:12:49   he would you know Sookie yeah i'm a [TS]

00:12:51   theory that one of the reasons ninja [TS]

00:12:52   movies are so popular is that you can [TS]

00:12:54   completely cover your actor bringing any [TS]

00:12:56   stuff man you want now that what made [TS]

00:12:59   into three the domination a change of [TS]

00:13:01   pace was it had a female as the [TS]

00:13:04   protagonist and she's played by Lucinda [TS]

00:13:06   Dickey who you probably don't remember [TS]

00:13:08   shooting that's the i'll break in and [TS]

00:13:11   break into electric boogaloo which were [TS]

00:13:15   both also this year [TS]

00:13:16   think bigger first a busy year that was [TS]

00:13:20   her only here a year the Dickey so I'm [TS]

00:13:22   going to be animals were only in 1984 [TS]

00:13:25   and then i'm done yes come out and not [TS]

00:13:27   very good now in this movie ninjas have [TS]

00:13:30   the power to possess people [TS]

00:13:31   supernaturally and on the DVD commentary [TS]

00:13:34   the doctor explains that the reason they [TS]

00:13:36   did that is because they figured people [TS]

00:13:38   wouldn't find a plausible that a woman [TS]

00:13:40   could do martial arts [TS]

00:13:41   wow so they went to the perfectly [TS]

00:13:44   natural alternate answer of supernatural [TS]

00:13:47   affects the actual plot is pretty boring [TS]

00:13:50   but there is a seduction scene where [TS]

00:13:52   she's giving a guy a lapdance opens a [TS]

00:13:55   can of v8 and seductively pours it down [TS]

00:13:57   her clear that probably so this is well [TS]

00:14:01   the ninjas possessing her [TS]

00:14:02   however I not seen this movie I could've [TS]

00:14:05   had a v-8 shadow wants to do you with my [TS]

00:14:08   ninja pole twirling while she's doing [TS]

00:14:10   this her face says I am certain this is [TS]

00:14:13   the sexiest thing anyone has ever seen [TS]

00:14:15   and it isn't and she lives in the most [TS]

00:14:23   1980 specific apartment ever it's just a [TS]

00:14:25   great big room with a stand-up arcade [TS]

00:14:29   machine and nagle prints every way oh [TS]

00:14:31   yeah it is a very odd movie and somehow [TS]

00:14:36   it not only got a DVD release couple [TS]

00:14:38   weeks ago it has directors commentary [TS]

00:14:39   and everything [TS]

00:14:41   oh wow thats all set director does the [TS]

00:14:44   one movie made right so he's really on [TS]

00:14:45   tickets he wasn't too busy [TS]

00:14:47   I don't know some of these movies were [TS]

00:14:50   accidentally directed by people who went [TS]

00:14:52   on to do things well X this guy directed [TS]

00:14:55   break into electric boogaloo I'll get it [TS]

00:14:57   open for him [TS]

00:14:58   yeah that that movies awful by the way [TS]

00:15:00   if you're curious [TS]

00:15:01   I love the breakdancers are just mines [TS]

00:15:03   they found in the park caii had heard [TS]

00:15:05   that break into was the better of the [TS]

00:15:07   break-in movies but i guess not [TS]

00:15:10   listen the problem with break into and I [TS]

00:15:13   can go on about the other as long as you [TS]

00:15:15   like [TS]

00:15:16   maybe I maybe could be is there any [TS]

00:15:19   country in that because then you can [TS]

00:15:20   just pick up next time and there's no [TS]

00:15:22   come who in that there's some dance [TS]

00:15:24   fighting and breaking where people you [TS]

00:15:27   know kind of lock at each other all [TS]

00:15:29   right and we run lock at each other [TS]

00:15:35   that's great that's not everything [TS]

00:15:37   reading my denomination bring domination [TS]

00:15:39   from 1984 you cannot look at a frame of [TS]

00:15:42   this movie and not know it's from 1984 [TS]

00:15:44   excellent that's great I i think people [TS]

00:15:49   are gonna really like the the kungfu [TS]

00:15:51   come food at the at the film festival i [TS]

00:15:53   think this would be a fun night if you [TS]

00:15:56   come on down a minute drive in at the [TS]

00:15:57   outskirts of tactile have the driving [TS]

00:15:59   right that's right all right John [TS]

00:16:01   syracuse oh you're up [TS]

00:16:03   sorry you can't pick min 23 the [TS]

00:16:04   domination i'm pretty sure I've seen [TS]

00:16:07   that 120 seats for being truthful there [TS]

00:16:10   any of the other ninja of the movies our [TS]

00:16:12   syllabus and I've also seen Breaking and [TS]

00:16:15   break into wow yeah USA Network's what I [TS]

00:16:19   blame for Allah so up all night with [TS]

00:16:24   rhonda shear and Gilbert Gottfried plays [TS]

00:16:27   it its up all night [TS]

00:16:29   yes alright so to understand why I [TS]

00:16:33   picked this movie thing you have to know [TS]

00:16:34   about me is that I like the good Jason [TS]

00:16:37   Bourne movies better than like most [TS]

00:16:39   James Bond movies I like my spine movies [TS]

00:16:42   realistic in scare quotes but still so [TS]

00:16:48   this is emily is very realistic [TS]

00:16:50   yeah that fits in scare quotes it is the [TS]

00:16:53   2006 movie called The Good Shepherd and [TS]

00:16:56   I didn't notice until i went to the IMDb [TS]

00:16:58   page but it was directed by robert de [TS]

00:17:00   niro I had no idea i don't think that [TS]

00:17:02   factors into it all here but it's got a [TS]

00:17:03   hell of a cast it's matt damon and the [TS]

00:17:05   the lead that angelina jolie Alec [TS]

00:17:07   Baldwin fully crewed up robert de niro [TS]

00:17:09   with the guy from 2001 his name I can't [TS]

00:17:11   pronounce michael gambon William part [TS]

00:17:14   timothy hutton like [TS]

00:17:15   you know the big stars in sort of an [TS]

00:17:19   ensemble connections i think yeah I I [TS]

00:17:22   stopped I stop copying pasting from my [TS]

00:17:23   duties for important huge cat seemingly [TS]

00:17:26   live look at the actual running time it [TS]

00:17:28   seems like a long movie that's what I [TS]

00:17:29   like I like to be long and drawn out and [TS]

00:17:30   it's kind of the sprawling history of [TS]

00:17:32   the CIA and one family's involvement in [TS]

00:17:35   it and I don't want to spoil too much of [TS]

00:17:38   the plot and that's all you really need [TS]

00:17:39   to know do you like your movies your spy [TS]

00:17:41   movies kind of like slow and sinister do [TS]

00:17:45   you like sprawling multi-character [TS]

00:17:46   movies that have said that spanned two [TS]

00:17:49   generations of a family [TS]

00:17:51   do you like movies without a lot of [TS]

00:17:52   comedy and very dark and kind of serious [TS]

00:17:55   music the whole time then this is the [TS]

00:17:57   movie for you [TS]

00:17:58   it also has one of the most tragic death [TS]

00:18:00   scenes in any movie I've ever seen and [TS]

00:18:03   my favorite thing about the tragic [TS]

00:18:04   testing which I will not spoil is that [TS]

00:18:06   it may not actually be all that tragic [TS]

00:18:08   ah which i think is a great twist or is [TS]

00:18:11   it or isn't it it is anyway if you have [TS]

00:18:14   never heard of the good shepherd because [TS]

00:18:15   I hadn't heard of until I caught on like [TS]

00:18:17   Netflix or something a couple years ago [TS]

00:18:18   I I don't know if it did very well in [TS]

00:18:21   theater or whatever but if you like that [TS]

00:18:22   type of movie Go Netflix it now you will [TS]

00:18:24   not be disappointed [TS]

00:18:26   it seemed to earn back its budget which [TS]

00:18:28   means of you know it probably ended up [TS]

00:18:29   over many many years breaking even but [TS]

00:18:32   you know it's not a success in the box [TS]

00:18:34   office [TS]

00:18:35   yeah i had to pay all those actors yeah [TS]

00:18:37   well and some actual real-life you know [TS]

00:18:40   basis I was just remembering that the [TS]

00:18:42   yeah the the character on who matt damon [TS]

00:18:44   is or the person who matters character [TS]

00:18:46   is based is a rather notorious but like [TS]

00:18:49   very very famous CIA agent as far as [TS]

00:18:52   those things go in there is sort of a [TS]

00:18:54   little bit of a true story behind some [TS]

00:18:56   of it are inspired by an interesting is [TS]

00:18:58   matt damon doesn't play like the [TS]

00:18:59   fresh-faced kid in this movie like [TS]

00:19:02   further the latter part of the movie is [TS]

00:19:04   it there is a fresh-faced kid in the [TS]

00:19:05   movie and it's his son after which actor [TS]

00:19:09   that is but that many ways it especially [TS]

00:19:11   change of pace because like Oh Matt [TS]

00:19:13   Damon that's like the Good Will Hunting [TS]

00:19:14   guy right now not in this movie [TS]

00:19:16   alright I want to talk to you about our [TS]

00:19:18   first sponsor its warby parker these are [TS]

00:19:20   the rebels of I where they're dedicated [TS]

00:19:23   to the belief that really nice [TS]

00:19:26   I we're really nice glasses and [TS]

00:19:28   sunglasses [TS]

00:19:29   cost a fortune they shouldn't cost as [TS]

00:19:31   much as a high-end iPhone their [TS]

00:19:34   prescription glasses start at $95 [TS]

00:19:36   including the prescription lenses and [TS]

00:19:38   their titanium frames collection [TS]

00:19:40   including lenses starts at 145 all their [TS]

00:19:44   glasses already having anti-reflective [TS]

00:19:45   anti-glare coating there's no markup to [TS]

00:19:48   come with a case they come with cleaning [TS]

00:19:49   cloth and here's the best part this is [TS]

00:19:52   an online store for glasses they do have [TS]

00:19:55   some showrooms in some places including [TS]

00:19:56   San Francisco where I live but you can [TS]

00:19:59   order them online and you can do it [TS]

00:20:00   without fear that you're gonna get [TS]

00:20:02   something that wasn't at all what you [TS]

00:20:03   thought it was when you saw it on the [TS]

00:20:04   web they'll send you up to five pairs of [TS]

00:20:06   glasses in their home try-on program [TS]

00:20:09   they ship them directly to you you keep [TS]

00:20:11   them for up to five days you try them on [TS]

00:20:12   in the comfort of your own home and then [TS]

00:20:14   you send them back with a prepaid label [TS]

00:20:16   after you've made your decision and if [TS]

00:20:18   you don't like any of them there's no [TS]

00:20:19   obligation to purchase but you can get [TS]

00:20:21   that assurance that this is actually [TS]

00:20:22   what you're going to get and then you [TS]

00:20:24   place the order to have him in your [TS]

00:20:26   hands within 10 business days and it's [TS]

00:20:28   usually even faster than that they also [TS]

00:20:30   have their heart in the right place for [TS]

00:20:31   every pair of glasses warby parker cells [TS]

00:20:33   they distribute a pair of glasses to [TS]

00:20:35   somebody in need because Warby Parker [TS]

00:20:37   doesn't just believe that glasses should [TS]

00:20:39   be affordable for everybody [TS]

00:20:40   they also believe that people in need [TS]

00:20:42   should be able to see and so they give [TS]

00:20:45   them glasses as well and they've got [TS]

00:20:46   this donation program now there are also [TS]

00:20:48   sunglasses they have non prescription [TS]

00:20:50   polarized sunglasses those started 95 or [TS]

00:20:52   145 with titanium frames and the [TS]

00:20:55   prescription polarized glasses start at [TS]

00:20:57   one fifty-one 95 for titanium so warby [TS]

00:21:00   parker they believe glasses should be a [TS]

00:21:02   fashion accessory should be fashionable [TS]

00:21:04   these are vintage inspired designs they [TS]

00:21:06   believe that they should be reasonably [TS]

00:21:08   priced they believe that all sorts of [TS]

00:21:10   people should have access to quality [TS]

00:21:12   eyeglasses and they believe that online [TS]

00:21:14   shoppers shouldn't have to freak out [TS]

00:21:16   because they're worried that what they [TS]

00:21:17   just bought isn't going to be good when [TS]

00:21:20   they get it you get to try it on so a [TS]

00:21:22   very cool idea [TS]

00:21:23   warby parker is the name you go to warby [TS]

00:21:25   parker dot-com and its w/ei rby parrkerr [TS]

00:21:29   check it out [TS]

00:21:31   get some glasses in see if your next new [TS]

00:21:34   pair of glasses fit you in the comfort [TS]

00:21:35   of your own home use the code smell [TS]

00:21:38   which is my last name [TS]

00:21:39   thank you very much i hope you know that [TS]

00:21:41   by now since you've been listening to my [TS]

00:21:42   show [TS]

00:21:42   use the code snow and you'll get a free [TS]

00:21:45   3-day shipping deal from warby parker so [TS]

00:21:49   try it out [TS]

00:21:50   warby parker calm and thanks for Parker [TS]

00:21:52   for sponsoring the incomparable dan it's [TS]

00:21:55   your turn [TS]

00:21:56   well having picked sneakers and through [TS]

00:21:59   effect i can only fit finish this off [TS]

00:22:01   with the third movie in a trilogy which [TS]

00:22:05   is high just realized also takes place [TS]

00:22:07   the same or is film the same year as [TS]

00:22:09   sneakers and that is 1990 tues army of [TS]

00:22:12   darkness [TS]

00:22:13   nice i directed by Sam Raimi excellent [TS]

00:22:17   excellent movie in Jason you mentioned [TS]

00:22:19   evil dead two earlier yes the third 130 [TS]

00:22:21   evil dead trilogy and the first one I [TS]

00:22:25   ever saw which was because perhaps made [TS]

00:22:27   a little better entered for someone like [TS]

00:22:28   me who doesn't like horror movies that [TS]

00:22:30   much though I have seen and enjoyed Evil [TS]

00:22:32   Dead 2 which is only kind of partially [TS]

00:22:36   horror movie it's a calm [TS]

00:22:37   yeah it's really a comedy is why i like [TS]

00:22:40   it but army of darkness which is the the [TS]

00:22:42   story of ash from the first two evil [TS]

00:22:45   movies he was transported back in time [TS]

00:22:46   at the events at the end of people there [TS]

00:22:50   too and ends up in the dark ages [TS]

00:22:52   basically where he is a sleep and then [TS]

00:22:55   when the castle he is in a has been [TS]

00:23:00   insulated into is under attack by evil [TS]

00:23:03   minions e is forced to come to their [TS]

00:23:05   their rescue but of course he does the [TS]

00:23:08   sinners own particular way and this you [TS]

00:23:11   know movie contains many many great [TS]

00:23:13   things including limoges to classic [TS]

00:23:16   Harryhausen stop-motion battles with [TS]

00:23:20   skeletons the Three Stooges are also [TS]

00:23:23   referenced in here [TS]

00:23:25   The Day the Earth Stood Still i believe [TS]

00:23:27   is also a reference with the the three [TS]

00:23:30   pet words of flowers Virata Klaatu [TS]

00:23:33   Barada don't know but Bruce Campbell who [TS]

00:23:37   is you know rightfully a a movie icon if [TS]

00:23:41   a B movie icon is is fantastic here this [TS]

00:23:43   is into my mind probably his best work [TS]

00:23:46   and it's just it's you know Sam Raimi [TS]

00:23:50   before Sam Raimi sort of got into [TS]

00:23:52   mainstream Hollywood movies you but you [TS]

00:23:54   can see all the things in here [TS]

00:23:56   that show up in his later movies I mean [TS]

00:23:59   if you watch the the doctor octopus seen [TS]

00:24:01   spider-man 2 you know there's like [TS]

00:24:03   direct references back to his work and [TS]

00:24:05   evil dead [TS]

00:24:06   it's just the way he shoots it he's got [TS]

00:24:09   a very distinctive methodology and [TS]

00:24:11   there's certain shots you really loves [TS]

00:24:13   to reuse and it's it's terribly cheesy [TS]

00:24:17   at points but kind of in a delightful [TS]

00:24:20   hilarious way lots of little players who [TS]

00:24:24   show up in another universe bizarre [TS]

00:24:27   little rolls for bridget fonda appears [TS]

00:24:29   very briefly and Beth Davis who plays [TS]

00:24:33   the the love interest who some might [TS]

00:24:35   know in more recent years as Jared [TS]

00:24:37   Harris's wife on mad men and of course [TS]

00:24:41   ted raimi Sam Raimi's brother who [TS]

00:24:44   appears as a three different characters [TS]

00:24:48   but it's also one another one of those [TS]

00:24:50   movies that is that is eminently [TS]

00:24:53   quotable gimme some sugar baby [TS]

00:24:56   he pretty much anything Bruce Campbell [TS]

00:24:58   says in this movie is it's just instant [TS]

00:25:01   instant classic so if you ever play duke [TS]

00:25:03   nukem virtually every single line from [TS]

00:25:05   that is crib from this will be out this [TS]

00:25:10   it's just it's just a great movie this [TS]

00:25:11   the skeleton fight at the end if nothing [TS]

00:25:13   else is just totally worth it [TS]

00:25:15   although don't make the mistake I did [TS]

00:25:16   originally when I bought this on DVD i [TS]

00:25:18   bought like what was supposedly i think [TS]

00:25:20   the director's cut and it has a [TS]

00:25:23   different the Virgin i had only had an [TS]

00:25:25   in an ending that was different from the [TS]

00:25:27   theatrical release in the movie [TS]

00:25:29   yeah they're at least three separate [TS]

00:25:30   releases of army of darkness the the [TS]

00:25:32   quote-unquote directors cut ending which [TS]

00:25:35   is not the theatrical cut ending is [TS]

00:25:37   actually worse i would argue so I later [TS]

00:25:39   acquired a separate version that has [TS]

00:25:41   both endings but the original ending is [TS]

00:25:44   seen in the theaters i think is a is a [TS]

00:25:45   much more satisfying says I ending and [TS]

00:25:49   if you haven't seen this movie I don't I [TS]

00:25:52   I don't even have nothing for you [TS]

00:25:54   why what's wrong with you alright I just [TS]

00:25:57   haven't seen it yet you haven't seen our [TS]

00:25:59   radar [TS]

00:26:01   have you seen people that you haven't [TS]

00:26:02   seen evil good to yet i have a single [TS]

00:26:05   gave you that the pollution of Evil Dead [TS]

00:26:07   is is very interesting because people [TS]

00:26:09   get the original Evil Dead is is [TS]

00:26:11   straight-up horror and its really good [TS]

00:26:13   as a horror film it's it's genuinely [TS]

00:26:16   scary and its international pretty [TS]

00:26:19   twisted it's in there and then evil that [TS]

00:26:21   to suddenly becomes like the Benny Hill [TS]

00:26:23   horror movie [TS]

00:26:24   yeah it's a comedy and it aside from it [TS]

00:26:27   being a comedy it's almost exactly the [TS]

00:26:28   same movie as evil dead right although [TS]

00:26:31   it has the single best visual pun play [TS]

00:26:35   on words ever made in the movie i will [TS]

00:26:38   say that all right I'll I'm going to see [TS]

00:26:40   my calcium eventual and then army of [TS]

00:26:42   darkness is basically like more like a [TS]

00:26:44   fantasy epic you know Jason and the [TS]

00:26:46   Argonauts style jerk than anything else [TS]

00:26:48   they were going to call it many evil [TS]

00:26:49   dead and then they remanded they remade [TS]

00:26:51   Evil Dead yeah some so I it's my turn to [TS]

00:26:55   go to wrap the third round and i am [TS]

00:26:59   going to i'm going to pick this is gonna [TS]

00:27:01   be a little complicated i am going to [TS]

00:27:04   pick another James Cameron movie to go [TS]

00:27:07   with Steve's choice of the Terminator [TS]

00:27:09   i'm going to pick the abyss but it's the [TS]

00:27:12   special edition where they added back [TS]

00:27:14   all the things that make that movie good [TS]

00:27:16   because the original release is crappy [TS]

00:27:19   but the special edition which I saw in [TS]

00:27:23   70 millimeter I believe or it was on a [TS]

00:27:26   giant screen i think it was 70 [TS]

00:27:27   millimeter it is spectacular spectacular [TS]

00:27:30   so I thought when they when they did the [TS]

00:27:32   home video special edition release they [TS]

00:27:34   did a limited film release and I saw in [TS]

00:27:38   san francisco and it's a really good [TS]

00:27:40   movie and the ending of the original was [TS]

00:27:45   really bad and the special edition it [TS]

00:27:48   actually fixes huge amounts of problems [TS]

00:27:51   with the movie it's long but there's a [TS]

00:27:54   lot of great stuff in it at the core [TS]

00:27:57   it's the story of the relationship [TS]

00:28:00   between harris and Mary Elizabeth [TS]

00:28:04   mastrantonio a yes Michael Biehn is in [TS]

00:28:07   this too and and is is threatening there [TS]

00:28:12   is an amazing scene where [TS]

00:28:14   we're at harris has to allow Mary [TS]

00:28:20   Elizabeth mastrantonio to drown and hope [TS]

00:28:23   that maybe he could he can pump the [TS]

00:28:26   water out of her body later and bring [TS]

00:28:30   her back to life but he has to let her [TS]

00:28:32   drown first [TS]

00:28:33   that is an incredible just incredible [TS]

00:28:35   seen the special effects are good [TS]

00:28:39   this is one of the first major cgi usage [TS]

00:28:42   and in a movie with a little alien [TS]

00:28:44   pseudopod water water thingy that comes [TS]

00:28:48   out of the moonpool there's aliens yeah [TS]

00:28:51   there's lots of undersea action there's [TS]

00:28:54   crazy like submarine gadgety things in [TS]

00:28:57   this in this sea bass at the bottom of [TS]

00:29:00   the ocean sitting on the ocean floor [TS]

00:29:03   chris elliott is a guy on a ship at one [TS]

00:29:06   point it's like why is he and his movie [TS]

00:29:07   but he's there Michael beans mustaches [TS]

00:29:11   like an actor in itself it is it is [TS]

00:29:14   indeed good character moments a good [TS]

00:29:18   story arc and interesting message and a [TS]

00:29:23   much better in the special edition like [TS]

00:29:26   I can't even imagine so i i'm i i'm [TS]

00:29:30   gonna pick the best because i wanna i [TS]

00:29:32   wanna a big big sci-fi movie and I like [TS]

00:29:35   the best special edition a lot sadly not [TS]

00:29:36   on blu-ray [TS]

00:29:38   but it's on DVD and i do recommend it's [TS]

00:29:40   really good i love love love that movie [TS]

00:29:43   that I hold up that movie as one of I [TS]

00:29:46   can't imagine a script by screenplay [TS]

00:29:48   being more perfectly executed than that [TS]

00:29:53   beat for beat for beat every element is [TS]

00:29:56   exactly where it has to be and even [TS]

00:29:58   though this is a really intense action [TS]

00:30:01   action movie at no point do you ask [TS]

00:30:05   yourself the question why is this [TS]

00:30:07   character doing this or why is this [TS]

00:30:08   happening [TS]

00:30:09   and the answer is because it's a movie [TS]

00:30:12   and that one has to happen that the [TS]

00:30:14   scene the you refer to specifically i [TS]

00:30:16   think that Hitchcock would have been [TS]

00:30:18   absolutely thrilled to have come up with [TS]

00:30:20   this concept that there you have two [TS]

00:30:23   characters that are in a mini-sub that [TS]

00:30:26   is taking on water [TS]

00:30:27   and now they have to figure out how they [TS]

00:30:29   not die [TS]

00:30:30   yeah and rounded up and the the I don't [TS]

00:30:33   really want to I really would rather [TS]

00:30:34   people see this movie and see it unfold [TS]

00:30:37   yeah spoil it but what I love is that [TS]

00:30:39   again a lesser movie would have left you [TS]

00:30:42   thinking yeah but why didn't they try [TS]

00:30:44   this oh come on thats no James Cameron [TS]

00:30:47   put so much work in this to make sure [TS]

00:30:49   that the solution they come up with as [TS]

00:30:52   horrible as it is is the only solution [TS]

00:30:54   available to them and then it's not as [TS]

00:30:57   though like after the scenes but that [TS]

00:30:59   part of the movies over with let's [TS]

00:31:01   forget about the fact we went through [TS]

00:31:03   this know that has an impact on how the [TS]

00:31:04   movie has to play out after that it's [TS]

00:31:06   like everything because i'll stop [TS]

00:31:09   ranting about this but just to give just [TS]

00:31:11   to give you like a concrete example and [TS]

00:31:13   Harris is the star the movement [TS]

00:31:15   he's the same he's the star ok he's the [TS]

00:31:17   big name he's the hero [TS]

00:31:19   so you know that if there's something [TS]

00:31:20   big that has to be done to save the day [TS]

00:31:22   the hero has to do it nonetheless at the [TS]

00:31:25   start of the movie he is simply like the [TS]

00:31:28   the head mechanic that he's like the [TS]

00:31:30   head of the screw on this oil derrick he [TS]

00:31:32   does not have the technical expertise to [TS]

00:31:34   do the thing that he has to do there are [TS]

00:31:36   other people who have come down onto the [TS]

00:31:37   book onto this undersea platform who do [TS]

00:31:39   have the expertise [TS]

00:31:41   Cameron figure has to have to figure out [TS]

00:31:43   we have to have a reason why he and only [TS]

00:31:46   he is available to do it as and they do [TS]

00:31:49   yeah I like i said but front for all my [TS]

00:31:52   appreciation for that technical stuff [TS]

00:31:53   it's just a rollicking great adventure [TS]

00:31:56   movie I really think it's the best movie [TS]

00:31:58   James Cameron has everything [TS]

00:31:59   do you like the original cut and II know [TS]

00:32:02   because I'm sure I'm on the same page is [TS]

00:32:04   jason i remember seeing the first cut [TS]

00:32:05   and not understanding why do you go you [TS]

00:32:08   literally have no I mean I think they [TS]

00:32:10   were like we're coming out and will be a [TS]

00:32:11   little more like 2001 ich werde plate [TS]

00:32:13   what is happening nobody no it's not [TS]

00:32:15   it's not it's not it's not only that but [TS]

00:32:17   the cut version it's only it's only [TS]

00:32:19   about 22 minutes shorter but the reason [TS]

00:32:21   if he if you got to get the movie down [TS]

00:32:23   to two hours and 20 minutes you are you [TS]

00:32:26   going to take out the stuff that's [TS]

00:32:27   really expensive expression [TS]

00:32:29   effects shots know you're going to take [TS]

00:32:31   out dialogue scenes that don't [TS]

00:32:33   necessarily contribute to the plot but [TS]

00:32:35   what they do is they give you the [TS]

00:32:37   context here is the relationship between [TS]

00:32:39   each of one HR each and every one of the [TS]

00:32:41   workers on this oil platform and this is [TS]

00:32:44   why this person is important to that [TS]

00:32:45   person this is why this other person [TS]

00:32:47   here can't just jump in here again it's [TS]

00:32:51   it today they wouldn't cut this movie by [TS]

00:32:53   the way because it's not even three [TS]

00:32:54   hours long and an action sci-fi action [TS]

00:32:56   movie at a hundred and seventy minutes [TS]

00:32:58   now people wouldn't even blink at it [TS]

00:33:00   right the main change they make is that [TS]

00:33:02   the pseudopod would be pointed straight [TS]

00:33:03   at the camera a lot more for the greedy [TS]

00:33:06   three purposes yes [TS]

00:33:08   that explains what went wrong because I [TS]

00:33:10   tried to watch this movie a couple of [TS]

00:33:12   months ago and I must have gotten a [TS]

00:33:13   special edition one because my only note [TS]

00:33:15   on our super boring haha which seemed [TS]

00:33:18   odd because of the mountain specialist [TS]

00:33:19   everybody loves it [TS]

00:33:21   yea though i don't think the special [TS]

00:33:23   edition i don't think the special [TS]

00:33:24   edition is super boring i think maybe it [TS]

00:33:26   is a long movie [TS]

00:33:27   I mean there's no doubt about it but [TS]

00:33:28   it's long movies builds I what I love it [TS]

00:33:31   well you you also need to read also need [TS]

00:33:34   to get the documentary about the making [TS]

00:33:36   of the story because that's another [TS]

00:33:37   thing that we could talk for half are [TS]

00:33:38   about world showing to but if it's [TS]

00:33:41   really is like only james cameron could [TS]

00:33:44   will this movie into existence the way [TS]

00:33:46   that he did that's like I think this is [TS]

00:33:49   a submarine fetish [TS]

00:33:50   yeah he does he's always been into this [TS]

00:33:52   movie and Titanic yes and the fact that [TS]

00:33:54   he descended to the deepest part of the [TS]

00:33:57   ocean in a submarine like last year he [TS]

00:34:00   says always a world record for lowest [TS]

00:34:02   submarined I've kind of obsessed the the [TS]

00:34:07   man now has Titanic money if he wants to [TS]

00:34:09   go to the case of our targeting all by [TS]

00:34:11   himself just because he can do that [TS]

00:34:13   before we get back to our draft want to [TS]

00:34:15   take a moment and talk about our sponsor [TS]

00:35:35   bad lighting around [TS]

00:35:37   I'm sorry no we don't live around would [TS]

00:35:39   have my notes ready for inviting love [TS]

00:35:42   love stood one of those like retro [TS]

00:35:44   romantic comedy set in nineteen fifties [TS]

00:35:46   in with Spencer Tracy is like installing [TS]

00:35:48   this made this huge supercomputer to do [TS]

00:35:50   all the research for a TV network [TS]

00:35:53   katharine hepburn is the head of the [TS]

00:35:54   like old-fashioned book type research [TS]

00:35:56   department and they they start off [TS]

00:35:58   butting heads but they want to fall in [TS]

00:36:00   love it's great story also great tech [TS]

00:36:02   great technology great old-fashioned [TS]

00:36:03   heavy iron IBM accumulators and stuff in [TS]

00:36:06   the room [TS]

00:36:06   David I wanted to stay high brow so i'm [TS]

00:36:08   going to pick the rundown with the rock [TS]

00:36:11   and Shem Scott basically show of the [TS]

00:36:18   rock is a bounty hunter or retrieval [TS]

00:36:21   expert who is sent to Brazil to bring [TS]

00:36:24   back Seann William Scott Stifler who [TS]

00:36:26   formerly ys who has he's stuck in this [TS]

00:36:30   town that is run by christopher walken [TS]

00:36:32   of course is enslaved all of the locals [TS]

00:36:35   and really I mean you know there's [TS]

00:36:39   action there's a tranquilizer darts that [TS]

00:36:43   give them whose genic things while [TS]

00:36:46   they're hanging from trees they're [TS]

00:36:47   monkeys there's a monkey that violates [TS]

00:36:49   the rocks face at one point I mean it's [TS]

00:36:51   nice classy Abram peterburg you know [TS]

00:36:56   friday night lights here but the classic [TS]

00:36:59   my favorite part of the movie is [TS]

00:37:01   everything Christopher Walken says [TS]

00:37:04   because I swear he had to be making this [TS]

00:37:06   all up and at the very end of the movie [TS]

00:37:08   and you can use the spoiler and if you [TS]

00:37:10   want but it doesn't really matter of [TS]

00:37:12   course the locals turn on him and shoot [TS]

00:37:13   him and get him down in the street and [TS]

00:37:15   as he's dying he's spinning around with [TS]

00:37:18   his gun in his hand he goes you [TS]

00:37:20   ungrateful boom-boom buzz and drops yeah [TS]

00:37:26   and you're just sitting there going what [TS]

00:37:28   the yeah and there was all I'm glad you [TS]

00:37:33   ate i'm glad you kept highbrow oh yeah [TS]

00:37:36   David thank you see if I like almost [TS]

00:37:39   everything John Carpenter did in the [TS]

00:37:41   early eighties this is probably my [TS]

00:37:43   favorite 1984 Starman oh nice touching [TS]

00:37:47   tale of a space alien and the [TS]

00:37:49   life-giving power of his magical glowing [TS]

00:37:51   balls [TS]

00:37:54   Jeff Bridges jeff bridges uh is a space [TS]

00:37:56   alien he gets the gold disc that was [TS]

00:37:59   sent off on Voyager 2 telling everybody [TS]

00:38:02   in outer space come to earth we love [TS]

00:38:04   visitors and naturally government shoots [TS]

00:38:07   down his spaceship sure you spend the [TS]

00:38:10   rest of soccer to spend the rest of the [TS]

00:38:11   round seeking out the alien to try and [TS]

00:38:13   dissect him our love it because the [TS]

00:38:15   performance by jeff bridges is fantastic [TS]

00:38:18   I shows pitch-perfect bemusement at at [TS]

00:38:22   all of our earth traditions and speech [TS]

00:38:23   patterns and his near orgasmic reaction [TS]

00:38:26   to his first taste of dutch apple pie is [TS]

00:38:28   one of the best moments of any [TS]

00:38:31   performance sites on the eighties got an [TS]

00:38:33   Oscar nom for ya [TS]

00:38:34   oscar nomination you know he's good [TS]

00:38:36   bemusement yes this is this is some of [TS]

00:38:39   his best beam usery alright love it [TS]

00:38:41   Starman good stuff Karen Allen and [TS]

00:38:44   bridges have a real nice sweet genuine [TS]

00:38:46   organically grown relationship in it and [TS]

00:38:49   also want to put out a thumbs up to the [TS]

00:38:53   score which I always assumed was John [TS]

00:38:55   Carpenter's but turns out is by Jack [TS]

00:38:57   Nietzsche okay good stuff [TS]

00:39:00   all right Monty petey wheatstraw [TS]

00:39:04   is that is that the director of the [TS]

00:39:06   movie that is the movie it is sometimes [TS]

00:39:09   called pd wheatstraw the devil's [TS]

00:39:10   son-in-law stars and sorry Rudy ray [TS]

00:39:14   Moore who is better known as dolomite [TS]

00:39:17   from 1977 Rudy ray Moore was most famous [TS]

00:39:22   as a comic he recorded incredibly filthy [TS]

00:39:25   long-playing albums for people and he [TS]

00:39:30   would do a tale of the signifying monkey [TS]

00:39:32   where everything rhymed [TS]

00:39:34   I don't have time to get into exactly [TS]

00:39:35   how one of his rhymes sort of made it [TS]

00:39:39   into Rapper's Delight a couple years [TS]

00:39:41   later that I assure you it's fascinating [TS]

00:39:43   he does do some kung foo he clearly [TS]

00:39:47   likes kungfu but he cannot do come [TS]

00:39:50   through at all [TS]

00:39:53   and unlike a sensible movie where you [TS]

00:39:56   bring a stunt double he just kind of [TS]

00:39:57   waves his hands in a way he thinks looks [TS]

00:40:00   like comfort food and then everybody [TS]

00:40:02   falls down for Rudy ray Moore awesome [TS]

00:40:04   awesome petey wheatstraw kung fools [TS]

00:40:07   blaxploitation combo [TS]

00:40:09   yes excellent alright John buying this [TS]

00:40:13   list I guess I've realized that case [TS]

00:40:15   everyone will have realized early that I [TS]

00:40:16   can't have a man-crush on George Clooney [TS]

00:40:18   yeah so here's another hit another [TS]

00:40:20   journey movie club yea in language [TS]

00:40:24   specific combination of my out of sight [TS]

00:40:28   pic and my Good Shepherd and I'm a Good [TS]

00:40:30   Shepherd pic yeah kind of its syriana [TS]

00:40:33   this is George Clooney as a rumpled spy [TS]

00:40:36   it's a serious spy movie it has a plot [TS]

00:40:38   that people used to say was the most [TS]

00:40:40   confusing plot of any movie and they [TS]

00:40:41   couldn't keep track of but it's totally [TS]

00:40:42   not confusing you just watch the movie [TS]

00:40:44   and don't like check twitter the whole [TS]

00:40:46   time you will be able to follow it [TS]

00:40:48   the plot is good it's interesting it's [TS]

00:40:49   smart I satisfying conclusion and the [TS]

00:40:52   pictures George Clooney with a really [TS]

00:40:53   rocking beer [TS]

00:40:54   alright circus out the drop the mic clue [TS]

00:41:00   need you've included dan what about you [TS]

00:41:03   as much as I love Harrison Ford for me [TS]

00:41:06   the iconic Jack Ryan will always be Alec [TS]

00:41:09   Baldwin in the hunt for red october [TS]

00:41:10   which is also the best of the tom clancy [TS]

00:41:13   books in that series also you get sean [TS]

00:41:15   connery as a rush [TS]

00:41:16   in submarine kappa which really makes [TS]

00:41:19   the movie for me cover mounting for sure [TS]

00:41:21   but i think that and and just a great [TS]

00:41:23   film you get you know james earl jones [TS]

00:41:25   as his boss and one of the really just [TS]

00:41:29   fantastic Cold War spy films as Sean [TS]

00:41:33   Connery tries to defect with a nuclear [TS]

00:41:36   suddenly submarine from the Soviet Union [TS]

00:41:38   great great movie really good tension [TS]

00:41:41   and yeah the crazy Ivan which which [TS]

00:41:45   later gets reference in firefly yeah I [TS]

00:41:48   had both of your head sneakers and that [TS]

00:41:50   is that sneakers i put sneakers i put [TS]

00:41:52   down at the bottom like Daniel probably [TS]

00:41:54   pick that one so let him after one but I [TS]

00:41:55   didn't want you to take red october [TS]

00:41:56   those low blow [TS]

00:41:58   it's worth the same person John you [TS]

00:41:59   remember need to remind me out [TS]

00:42:02   that's good 1i am going I'm going to [TS]

00:42:06   pick in my lightning round pick i'm [TS]

00:42:07   going to pick once from 2007-10 hansard [TS]

00:42:11   marketa irglova it's been turned into a [TS]

00:42:13   musical at won the oscar for best song [TS]

00:42:15   it is a charming low-budget movie about [TS]

00:42:19   an Irish musician and a woman who's an [TS]

00:42:24   immigrant from Eastern Europe who meet [TS]

00:42:27   and he shows he basically he shows her [TS]

00:42:31   how to play the piano and they fall in [TS]

00:42:33   love and it's and they all the [TS]

00:42:36   characters are people who can sing and I [TS]

00:42:40   believe will enhance our composed most [TS]

00:42:42   of the music for this movie himself and [TS]

00:42:44   he performs it and it really is kind of [TS]

00:42:47   an amazing it's got a great vibe and the [TS]

00:42:50   music is good and the story is really [TS]

00:42:53   interesting and bittersweet and it's not [TS]

00:42:56   a it's not a really sappy kind of love [TS]

00:42:57   story if there's a lot of complexity to [TS]

00:42:59   it and it's set in Dublin and so it's [TS]

00:43:02   gotta some nice of the gritty feel of [TS]

00:43:06   being around you know busking on the [TS]

00:43:09   streets of Dublin and things like that [TS]

00:43:10   and I like it a lot [TS]

00:43:11   I find it incredibly charming so once [TS]

00:43:14   it's what i choose we can do one more [TS]

00:43:16   lightning-round if you guys have the [TS]

00:43:18   something in the you ready [TS]

00:43:20   you gotta lighten I can do it all right [TS]

00:43:21   maybe I can do a straight lightning [TS]

00:43:23   strikes twice go ahead Michael Apted is [TS]

00:43:25   56 up latest chapter in a plague [TS]

00:43:29   documentary series [TS]

00:43:30   it started with a BBC british television [TS]

00:43:32   documentary which they interviewed [TS]

00:43:35   seven-year-old British kids from all [TS]

00:43:37   different like social strata with the [TS]

00:43:39   idea that you know if we interview that [TS]

00:43:42   the this is this is the future they all [TS]

00:43:44   face there's a lower class person here [TS]

00:43:46   someone born to upper-class go into the [TS]

00:43:47   pot school and Michael Apted who was [TS]

00:43:50   just someone who worked on that [TS]

00:43:51   documentary decided to let visit the [TS]

00:43:54   seven-year-olds at age 14 and ok let's [TS]

00:43:56   visit 21 and now there are 56 years old [TS]

00:43:58   and every seven years he goes back and [TS]

00:44:00   whoever wants to participate the [TS]

00:44:02   interview them all again and so the last [TS]

00:44:04   one just came out i think was just last [TS]

00:44:06   year and it's cool because now they're [TS]

00:44:08   at the age where they're elderly they [TS]

00:44:10   have grandkids some of them have [TS]

00:44:12   different sort of perspectives towards [TS]

00:44:14   their own participation in the [TS]

00:44:15   documentary and this is there talking to [TS]

00:44:18   a filmmaker someone who they've [TS]

00:44:19   literally no now all of their lives so [TS]

00:44:22   this is sort of like the closest we're [TS]

00:44:24   going to get to the truman show ever [TS]

00:44:26   as these are people whose lives have [TS]

00:44:27   been at least months every seven years [TS]

00:44:30   subject to popular speculation and [TS]

00:44:33   scrutiny so and it's tempting to see [TS]

00:44:35   that kind of course the apt is going to [TS]

00:44:36   be occasionally be unfair and when they [TS]

00:44:39   see someone who is also not going to the [TS]

00:44:42   voice but so who's now I'm a lawyer and [TS]

00:44:44   now I've got incredible amounts of money [TS]

00:44:45   now I have a states and now what one as [TS]

00:44:48   i'm talking about how nice it is to have [TS]

00:44:50   nice things for my family [TS]

00:44:51   I'm gonna cut back to him at seven years [TS]

00:44:53   old talking about why some people [TS]

00:44:55   succeed and why some people fail and [TS]

00:44:57   this is why sometimes these documentary [TS]

00:44:59   subjects are not very happy with Michael [TS]

00:45:00   Apted because they keep he keeps doing [TS]

00:45:02   that but then of course there's ID [TS]

00:45:05   entire series is worth is worth seeing [TS]

00:45:07   you can pretty much dropped the needle [TS]

00:45:08   at any point in the series and have a [TS]

00:45:10   great time [TS]

00:45:11   highly recommended documentary series [TS]

00:45:12   alright David [TS]

00:45:14   alright this is one of those films that [TS]

00:45:16   I sit down and say you know [TS]

00:45:18   ok watch this it's a world war two film [TS]

00:45:21   from the mid-sixties called where Eagles [TS]

00:45:23   dare based on as alistair maclean novel [TS]

00:45:26   great movie [TS]

00:45:27   yeah Richard Burton Clint Eastwood going [TS]

00:45:30   behind enemy lines playing spy games [TS]

00:45:33   with Nazis at a castle high up in the [TS]

00:45:36   air called the equals nest which at you [TS]

00:45:40   know just you know some fantastic [TS]

00:45:42   reverses and [TS]

00:45:43   and tricks and con games and you know [TS]

00:45:45   people changing loyalties back and forth [TS]

00:45:47   and one of the most thrilling and I mean [TS]

00:45:51   you can tell most of it is done with [TS]

00:45:53   like rear projection but just a [TS]

00:45:55   thrilling fight set-piece on a cable car [TS]

00:45:59   back and forth going up to the strange [TS]

00:46:01   castle but Richard Burton and clint [TS]

00:46:04   eastwood just really good and the scene [TS]

00:46:07   where they just string all the grenade [TS]

00:46:09   yeah gather it's just for like yeah it [TS]

00:46:12   gets ridiculous but it's awesome it's so [TS]

00:46:14   good [TS]

00:46:15   great movie and efforts are going [TS]

00:46:16   broadsword calling Danny Boy broadsword [TS]

00:46:19   calling Danny alright Steve you got one [TS]

00:46:23   more [TS]

00:46:23   what's gonna be alright here it is in [TS]

00:46:26   1979 my parents in order to capture for [TS]

00:46:30   posterity the acting stylings of their [TS]

00:46:32   seven-year-old son bought our families [TS]

00:46:35   first VCR which was this massive [TS]

00:46:37   200-pound beast with honest-to-god wood [TS]

00:46:41   paneling it looks like a family of four [TS]

00:46:44   can use it as a fallout shelter at the [TS]

00:46:48   time you know that VCRs were new so you [TS]

00:46:50   could buy movies on VHS but they were [TS]

00:46:52   like eight and each of them cost you [TS]

00:46:54   about ninety dollars so it the film my [TS]

00:46:57   dad bought to test this thing out on em [TS]

00:47:00   I watched it so many times is the [TS]

00:47:03   Poseidon Adventure from 1970 you [TS]

00:47:06   yeah I wanted to get on some of that [TS]

00:47:08   sweet gene hackman action [TS]

00:47:10   are you really like always good i love [TS]

00:47:13   the Poseidon Adventure i love gene [TS]

00:47:14   hackman and these are two that are just [TS]

00:47:16   made for each other you know about rogue [TS]

00:47:20   wave knocks over the Queen Mary onto its [TS]

00:47:22   back and then a handful of survivors try [TS]

00:47:24   to make their way up to the bottom of [TS]

00:47:25   the ship [TS]

00:47:26   it's a fairly simple concept but it's [TS]

00:47:28   done extremely well and you just can't [TS]

00:47:30   go wrong with Gene Hackman and Ernest [TS]

00:47:32   Borgnine spitting pieces of the scenery [TS]

00:47:34   at each other [TS]

00:47:35   it is one of my favorite films i [TS]

00:47:38   understand their people to consider this [TS]

00:47:40   a guilty pleasure those people are wrong [TS]

00:47:41   analysis I'd adventure Shelley Winters [TS]

00:47:45   entered allergy mode having to save the [TS]

00:47:48   day by swimming underwater [TS]

00:47:50   yes [TS]

00:47:50   that's a big deal it could fall Wow but [TS]

00:47:53   yet unleashed Maureen Montgomery on this [TS]

00:47:55   world and that is a terrible thing I can [TS]

00:47:57   understand why some people don't feel so [TS]

00:47:59   good about the side adventure that was [TS]

00:48:01   the disaster [TS]

00:48:02   that's right disaster after the davonte [TS]

00:48:05   come through us one more time one [TS]

00:48:07   workshop i'm gonna go with black [TS]

00:48:09   dynamite [TS]

00:48:10   yeah but I've actually heard of no it's [TS]

00:48:14   super good like it's pretending to be a [TS]

00:48:17   bad blaxploitation movie but it's [TS]

00:48:20   actually really funny it's eric michael [TS]

00:48:22   jai white who is an authentic martial [TS]

00:48:25   artist and huge muscley guy so already [TS]

00:48:28   it's got more fighting for the ability [TS]

00:48:30   than a lot of actual blaxploitation [TS]

00:48:31   movies all the music in it sounds [TS]

00:48:34   exactly like blaxploitation music which [TS]

00:48:37   means it sounds amazing and it's just [TS]

00:48:41   really funny and has some really good [TS]

00:48:42   fights in today if you only watch one [TS]

00:48:45   blaxploitation parody and you should [TS]

00:48:48   this is the West is going on all right [TS]

00:48:50   good [TS]

00:48:51   wait you should only watch one you're [TS]

00:48:52   saying yeah i'm gonna say don't bother [TS]

00:48:55   watching [TS]

00:48:56   don't be a menace something something [TS]

00:48:58   something to your friends in the hood [TS]

00:48:59   watch black dynamite Anton and you can't [TS]

00:49:02   go wrong [TS]

00:49:03   Black Dynamite is the good [TS]

00:49:04   blaxploitation parody movie that's all [TS]

00:49:06   you need to take a right got it John [TS]

00:49:09   so my final pic is going to be picked [TS]

00:49:11   based on the traditional criteria of [TS]

00:49:14   movie I saw on television this past week [TS]

00:49:16   huh and was reminded that it exists and [TS]

00:49:20   that I've seen it before [TS]

00:49:21   this is a simple plan 1998 movie by Sam [TS]

00:49:24   Raimi not starring bill paxton remember [TS]

00:49:26   when he could open a movie he was the [TS]

00:49:28   leading man [TS]

00:49:29   Bridget not let the female a BF well you [TS]

00:49:32   know and I'm Billy Bob Thornton who I'd [TS]

00:49:35   forgotten was even in this movie the [TS]

00:49:37   first time I saw it because the first [TS]

00:49:38   time I saw it I didn't know who Billy [TS]

00:49:39   Bob Thornton was but i was reminded [TS]

00:49:41   watching this that Billy Bob Thornton [TS]

00:49:43   can actually act is pretty darn good as [TS]

00:49:45   a reason he became famous and then [TS]

00:49:46   presented series of bad movies and [TS]

00:49:48   became a parody of himself but anyway [TS]

00:49:50   he's a good actor [TS]

00:49:51   it's it's sort of a proto Fargo it's [TS]

00:49:54   kinda like Fargo minus minus the humor [TS]

00:49:56   but with like a black shriveled heart [TS]

00:49:58   and in place of the humor [TS]

00:50:00   and interviews and the outcome of the [TS]

00:50:01   movie is entirely predictable you know [TS]

00:50:03   exactly what's going to happen and then [TS]

00:50:05   it happens but it somehow keeps you [TS]

00:50:06   watching anyway so it becomes like this [TS]

00:50:08   is definitely like and if it comes on TV [TS]

00:50:10   it comes on TV never seen you should [TS]

00:50:12   watch it i think i've seen that one then [TS]

00:50:14   and i think it was good [TS]

00:50:16   if I just seeing it now like you're like [TS]

00:50:18   oh I've seen so many better movies do [TS]

00:50:20   the same thing and that's true but you [TS]

00:50:21   know those movies didn't exist in 1998 [TS]

00:50:24   so like to give a credit [TS]

00:50:25   alright it's based on a really good [TS]

00:50:27   novel to all right who mm novelist wrote [TS]

00:50:29   the screenplay [TS]

00:50:30   yeah damn what do you have for me i'm [TS]

00:50:34   sticking with the alec baldwin train for [TS]

00:50:36   the first movie then I ever saw [TS]

00:50:38   it's a great train you can yell it you [TS]

00:50:40   can yell at people and play words with [TS]

00:50:41   friends as long as you like [TS]

00:50:43   yeah like fun train the first movie I [TS]

00:50:47   ever went to see by myself like without [TS]

00:50:50   parents with my friend Jason toss get [TS]

00:50:52   ready to field everybody was the 1994 [TS]

00:50:56   movie The Shadow the whole application [TS]

00:50:59   of the Orson Welles regular love this [TS]

00:51:01   movie [TS]

00:51:02   terrible campaign movie great movie [TS]

00:51:05   fantastic i thought i thought was a [TS]

00:51:07   solid solid yeah your boy elizacass [TS]

00:51:09   didn't boil Jonathan winters in miquelon [TS]

00:51:13   Tim Curry Penelope Ann Miller like great [TS]

00:51:16   movie and like just totally plays up the [TS]

00:51:18   camp which is for me is the best part [TS]

00:51:21   which is the University battle Lamont [TS]

00:51:23   Cranston as the No moonlights as the [TS]

00:51:25   shadow and John loan who plays shiwan [TS]

00:51:29   khan with the last remaining you know [TS]

00:51:31   descendant of genghis khan is here to [TS]

00:51:32   take over the world and yet they have [TS]

00:51:34   this great like chemistry between the [TS]

00:51:37   two of them you know he'll talk about [TS]

00:51:38   taking over the world and say and by the [TS]

00:51:40   way where did you get that tie brooks [TS]

00:51:43   brothers as that midtown you know like [TS]

00:51:45   it just it goes all completely off the [TS]

00:51:47   rails and seems totally aware that it's [TS]

00:51:49   a parody of itself and it's just it's [TS]

00:51:53   just delightful and alec baldwin you [TS]

00:51:55   know I don't know he's this is his you [TS]

00:51:58   know one of his comedic bright spots [TS]

00:52:00   sort of before he made his later [TS]

00:52:02   resurgence as such a great comedic actor [TS]

00:52:04   I a kid you know I have the shadow [TS]

00:52:07   action figures of like regular Alec [TS]

00:52:09   Baldwin and then they did an invisible [TS]

00:52:11   yes [TS]

00:52:12   yeah that's awesome well I had am so i [TS]

00:52:15   had to get this movie in region 2 DVD [TS]

00:52:16   because it did not exist in region one [TS]

00:52:19   in white sky me a pan and scan and I was [TS]

00:52:21   like no way am i doing that [TS]

00:52:23   wow I'm so i had to i have a region free [TS]

00:52:26   DVD player still for the shadow [TS]

00:52:28   alright so it's come to me for the last [TS]

00:52:31   pic and what I really want to do here is [TS]

00:52:33   just pick Star Wars about that it [TS]

00:52:37   occurred to me I might like nobody's [TS]

00:52:39   pictures yet and say in your face [TS]

00:52:42   John siracusa and mourn because Star [TS]

00:52:44   Wars is still laying out there we did a [TS]

00:52:46   whole draft and you didn't pick Star [TS]

00:52:48   Wars picked a good sorry but who dress [TS]

00:52:50   but here's the thing i'm not gonna do it [TS]

00:52:53   mostly because Monty has taught me an [TS]

00:52:55   important lesson which is people are [TS]

00:52:58   aware of Star Wars i'm not going to do [TS]

00:53:01   anything other than say in your face [TS]

00:53:02   which i just said and make a real pet [TS]

00:53:06   nice yeah that's right that's right it's [TS]

00:53:08   siracusa did what blood sport is still [TS]

00:53:11   available jasmine yes so i'm going to [TS]

00:53:13   i'm gonna instead pick a movie that [TS]

00:53:15   maybe not everybody knows about that i [TS]

00:53:17   enjoy which is a 1991 film that is a a [TS]

00:53:21   an homage to alfred hitchcock directed [TS]

00:53:23   by kenneth branagh called get again ice [TS]

00:53:26   which I which I like a lot and my wife [TS]

00:53:29   and I still quote this movie to each [TS]

00:53:30   other mostly in the context of [TS]

00:53:33   brandishing a pair of scissors and think [TS]

00:53:35   these are for you and then we put the [TS]

00:53:38   scissors down safely because you don't [TS]

00:53:41   run with scissors in the house it's a [TS]

00:53:43   it's a fascinating story about a man and [TS]

00:53:47   woman in the present day or in 1991 and [TS]

00:53:49   and in black and white in the past and [TS]

00:53:51   you get the sense that they have been [TS]

00:53:53   reincarnated and there's a an [TS]

00:53:56   interesting story about that there's a [TS]

00:53:58   it's a he's a friend on the past is a [TS]

00:54:01   musician in Hollywood emma thompson it [TS]

00:54:08   there's questions about is the [TS]

00:54:10   reincarnation real or not there's a [TS]

00:54:12   really nice twist their that happens [TS]

00:54:14   derek jacobi is in it he is fantastic [TS]

00:54:18   there is a there is a a brief Campbell [TS]

00:54:22   Scott appearance which is hilarious [TS]

00:54:23   because you think a maybe he's in this [TS]

00:54:25   movie [TS]

00:54:25   and then he goes away again and it's [TS]

00:54:28   very funny and and also there's a very [TS]

00:54:30   strange cameo by robin williams which is [TS]

00:54:33   actually not bad at all it's actually [TS]

00:54:35   pretty good and who's the other person I [TS]

00:54:38   wanted to mention here Andy Garcia is in [TS]

00:54:39   this and he's a cop in the past and then [TS]

00:54:43   he also makes a present-day appearance [TS]

00:54:45   later in the movie that's actually [TS]

00:54:46   pretty great and it is definitely a [TS]

00:54:48   twisty turny Hitchcock kind of feeling [TS]

00:54:50   movie i think this i'm not sure if this [TS]

00:54:53   was the movie that branded erected right [TS]

00:54:55   after he directed Henry the fifth but it [TS]

00:54:58   was not it was not soon after that [TS]

00:55:00   yeah there's that was his follow-up yeah [TS]

00:55:02   it's written by the guy who wrote out of [TS]

00:55:05   sight [TS]

00:55:05   yes got Frank so see it's all connected [TS]

00:55:07   and it's a lot of fun and I think it [TS]

00:55:10   gets overlooked now and some really nice [TS]

00:55:13   twists and and you know Kenneth Branagh [TS]

00:55:16   made a bunch of really good movies in [TS]

00:55:18   the in the late eighties and early [TS]

00:55:20   nineties and then you know he made other [TS]

00:55:23   movies later but this was this was a [TS]

00:55:25   really good really good fun [TS]

00:55:27   Hitchcock inspired thriller with this [TS]

00:55:30   interesting supernatural overtone of are [TS]

00:55:33   these people you know reincarnated from [TS]

00:55:36   the people who were here in Los Angeles [TS]

00:55:38   50 years before and there's an actually [TS]

00:55:41   forgot this movie existed yeah I [TS]

00:55:43   remember loving it when I saw that's why [TS]

00:55:45   I didn't pick star wars as i thought you [TS]

00:55:46   know this is a great movie i think [TS]

00:55:48   people should see it and you may not [TS]

00:55:49   have even heard about it so dead done [TS]

00:55:51   the right thing said well done again [TS]

00:55:53   great title to there's also that little [TS]

00:55:55   voyeuristic to thrill you get when you [TS]

00:55:57   know you're watching a movie in which [TS]

00:55:58   the two leads are married and within a [TS]

00:56:01   couple years after this movie horse yes [TS]

00:56:03   so you try to figure okay did it happen [TS]

00:56:06   during the shooting of this movie or [TS]

00:56:08   were they working out some of the [TS]

00:56:09   problems of their existing wasn't [TS]

00:56:11   present during this movie because then [TS]

00:56:12   they did much ado about nothing and [TS]

00:56:14   they're both in that to read that right [TS]

00:56:16   but that's their professional [TS]

00:56:17   responsible they said look we're gonna [TS]

00:56:19   stay together for the perception they [TS]

00:56:21   didn't do that but yes it's possible but [TS]

00:56:23   it does it adds to the kind of classic I [TS]

00:56:25   actually think this moving my work [TS]

00:56:26   better now that it's been out for 20 [TS]

00:56:29   years as a kind of you into the back [TS]

00:56:32   classic movie kind of feel might [TS]

00:56:34   actually serve it better but anyway dead [TS]

00:56:36   again cans branta [TS]

00:56:37   thank you something very enterprising [TS]

00:56:40   one of our listeners is going to find a [TS]

00:56:42   way to connect all of our movies [TS]

00:56:44   together except for Monty want me to [TS]

00:56:47   connect together and then you just need [TS]

00:56:48   one at Monte Pikmin of Monty's movies [TS]

00:56:51   can connect to us and then we're all set [TS]

00:56:53   but that's okay cause everybody gets [TS]

00:56:55   their own day I wasn't convinced that my [TS]

00:56:57   movies only needed to cohere with [TS]

00:56:58   themselves so thats little later i'm [TS]

00:57:01   just saying some conspiracy theorist of [TS]

00:57:03   a of a listener is gonna be like wait [TS]

00:57:05   this person is in this movie and that's [TS]

00:57:07   directed by the same person who directed [TS]

00:57:09   this movie who did the music for this [TS]

00:57:11   movie and then they're gonna figure out [TS]

00:57:12   they're all connected [TS]

00:57:13   except for like Miami connection [TS]

00:57:16   yes ironically enough strange one of the [TS]

00:57:19   guys and kill and kill again somehow [TS]

00:57:21   went on to be in the guard recruiter the [TS]

00:57:23   gods must be crazy [TS]

00:57:24   okay okay it might take a couple steps [TS]

00:57:27   in yeah we might win my somebody will [TS]

00:57:29   come up with a grand unified theory of [TS]

00:57:31   the uncomfortable movie draft but it was [TS]

00:57:33   98 degrees of the incomparable yes [TS]

00:57:35   exactly [TS]

00:57:36   well so that's it we have we have picked [TS]

00:57:38   a bunch of movies yes we have a mission [TS]

00:57:42   accomplished [TS]

00:57:43   why did we do this again that's what [TS]

00:57:45   we're here to do you might we could [TS]

00:57:47   debate what else we did but we did that [TS]

00:57:48   we picked 35 movies and we have now [TS]

00:57:51   drafted the second annual incomparable [TS]

00:57:54   film festival has come to its conclusion [TS]

00:57:56   so that there's a lot of fun stuff and [TS]

00:57:59   I've I've got movies i need to watch now [TS]

00:58:01   I'm gonna start searching AMC or Turner [TS]

00:58:04   Classic 4 9am citizenship movies anymore [TS]

00:58:06   they just showed TV shows i turn the [TS]

00:58:09   classic movies or I look at my next [TS]

00:58:10   netflix or amazon and see what i can see [TS]

00:58:13   what i can find lots of good selections [TS]

00:58:15   here they're a couple moved here I need [TS]

00:58:17   to rewatch because i remember really [TS]

00:58:19   hating them yeah I know what I saw you [TS]

00:58:21   saying that that's that's fascinating [TS]

00:58:23   that's good that's that's that's worth [TS]

00:58:25   it and also you can go see the third man [TS]

00:58:27   that's fine [TS]

00:58:28   I everybody knows the third man is good [TS]

00:58:31   substitute substantially better of the [TS]

00:58:33   two really good movies that are let's [TS]

00:58:35   take place in the sewers this ninja [TS]

00:58:37   turtles very I think visit I think this [TS]

00:58:39   is up yeah I don't forget my great great [TS]

00:58:41   crossover between the two of the shot is [TS]

00:58:43   an excellent excellent sewage a smooth [TS]

00:58:45   have nothing against the third man is a [TS]

00:58:47   fine film [TS]

01:00:43   still have their greatness is going to [TS]

01:00:45   just scream when we left star wars on [TS]

01:00:47   board again I think Star Wars needs to [TS]

01:00:48   stay there and perfect i think so we [TS]

01:00:50   just honored that way and the third man [TS]

01:00:51   Dan sneakers zero effect army of [TS]

01:01:05   hekia i'm not i might go check my email [TS]

01:01:07   during the shadow but that's okay [TS]

01:01:09   oh no no no no okay no no right don't [TS]

01:01:15   I won't that's for sure that's for sure [TS]

01:01:18   Shadow has a knife with like four edges [TS]

01:01:21   man four edges on and my signs that made [TS]

01:01:24   by its insane this knife [TS]

01:01:26   oh that knife and and of course my pics [TS]

01:01:30   were high fidelity Zelig the abyss [TS]

01:01:33   special edition once and yet again those [TS]

01:01:35   are solid picks Jason good job thanks [TS]

01:01:37   Steve [TS]

01:01:38   I like your pics to those are pics that [TS]

01:01:52   we're here with our post-draft analysis [TS]

01:01:54   I'm Jason smell your host and joining me [TS]

01:01:56   in the studio today is Philip michaels [TS]

01:01:58   our movie expert on the uncomfortable [TS]

01:02:00   and he's going to be analyzing the draft [TS]

01:02:01   picks that you just heard Phil welcome [TS]

01:02:03   and thank you Jason thank you for having [TS]

01:02:05   me here [TS]

01:02:06   yes it's very nice to have you now of [TS]

01:02:07   course people may know you from your [TS]

01:02:09   time doing the incomparable old movie [TS]

01:02:11   club no episode 8 they may know me from [TS]

01:02:14   previous episode a few that's right [TS]

01:02:17   and indeed as they know you as Dwight [TS]

01:02:19   David Eisenhower yes classic comedy bit [TS]

01:02:21   never to be repeated exactly so I I've [TS]

01:02:24   asked you as a an opinionated person [TS]

01:02:25   about movies to duty Mel Kiper Jr style [TS]

01:02:28   that's on ESPN reference nerds analysis [TS]

01:02:31   of the movie draft picks and to tell us [TS]

01:02:35   who the who the winners and the losers [TS]

01:02:36   were in the incomparable movie dropped [TS]

01:02:39   just completed [TS]

01:02:40   well i've i've done my Mel Kiper Jr wig [TS]

01:02:43   with its a formidable widow's peak [TS]

01:02:46   yes fans and um I i have to say a knocko [TS]

01:02:51   started off the draft strong with what [TS]

01:02:53   what a number one pick of the [TS]

01:02:55   conversation right I as we are having [TS]

01:02:58   now a conversation do I mean a fantastic [TS]

01:03:02   pic and he follows it up with a with a [TS]

01:03:04   great one two punch and I'm thinking oh [TS]

01:03:06   this is gonna be the this is going to be [TS]

01:03:08   the the oft-overlooked nineteen [TS]

01:03:11   seventies great drafts and then then [TS]

01:03:14   comes the curveball with the with the [TS]

01:03:16   big year which i haven't seen i I've [TS]

01:03:18   heard it's alright it's a movie about [TS]

01:03:20   birdwatchers though more recent some [TS]

01:03:22   people don't like that move now some [TS]

01:03:24   people do not i love the book the book [TS]

01:03:26   is by a Sports Illustrated writer is a [TS]

01:03:28   very good but i have the the movies on [TS]

01:03:30   my watch list i haven't gotten to it to [TS]

01:03:32   looking at it yet but that my main [TS]

01:03:34   objection to it is you have you have [TS]

01:03:36   this big theme going Andy and then you [TS]

01:03:38   you deviate from your plan I believe he [TS]

01:03:41   had some movies sniped from him [TS]

01:03:43   oh well then we go into the death set [TS]

01:03:45   which is alright not my favorite Hepburn [TS]

01:03:47   and Tracy movie that would be patent [TS]

01:03:49   Mike and then I think he just in the in [TS]

01:03:52   the last round he loses the plot with [TS]

01:03:54   the with 56 and up a documentary which [TS]

01:03:59   documentaries are all right but a [TS]

01:04:01   multi-part documentary is is he busy [TS]

01:04:04   drafting all of the document [TS]

01:04:05   various jason or just the 1i think he's [TS]

01:04:07   driving just the one but who people if I [TS]

01:04:09   went to a film festival and said all [TS]

01:04:11   right here's part 7 of this documentary [TS]

01:04:13   series that you haven't seen the first [TS]

01:04:15   six parts of I would burn down with [TS]

01:04:17   theater previously and I would be and [TS]

01:04:19   punch 26 up and people would would build [TS]

01:04:21   a statue in my honor I say built burning [TS]

01:04:24   down with theater so a great draft just [TS]

01:04:27   that that went off the rails [TS]

01:04:29   alright fair enough what about a monkey [TS]

01:04:31   Ashley Monty has succeeded I think in [TS]

01:04:34   that he picked five movies I I couldn't [TS]

01:04:37   die wouldn't recognize them if you [TS]

01:04:39   showed them to me now so so well done to [TS]

01:04:41   you mami Ashley says the movie expert [TS]

01:04:43   who's seen none of your movies he's [TS]

01:04:45   outwitted you have saying I see I've [TS]

01:04:48   heard of Miami connection yes people [TS]

01:04:50   I've heard nice things about Miami [TS]

01:04:52   connection but all the rest it is all he [TS]

01:04:54   i think he picked pops and whistles and [TS]

01:04:56   better and oh yeah that film i think [TS]

01:05:00   those workers other pics you know the [TS]

01:05:01   day after we recorded the incomparable [TS]

01:05:04   movie draft i listened to an episode of [TS]

01:05:06   the flophouse that that site's Miami [TS]

01:05:08   connection i want hey Monty that's your [TS]

01:05:10   movie the movie everyone is talking [TS]

01:05:12   about on podcast these days i guess so [TS]

01:05:15   good job Monty yes if it pops up on one [TS]

01:05:18   of the British football podcast that I [TS]

01:05:20   listen to will know something's up [TS]

01:05:22   yeah yeah viral marketing gone awry yeah [TS]

01:05:25   where's our money [TS]

01:05:26   Miami connection guys guess we need a [TS]

01:05:30   miami connection [TS]

01:05:31   alright David Lord David Laura I'm [TS]

01:05:33   trying to make the the make sense of his [TS]

01:05:35   pics if he went in with the theme if he [TS]

01:05:37   went in with a with a plan of attack and [TS]

01:05:39   it seems to be random stuff i like my [TS]

01:05:42   guess was his theme II wonder boys [TS]

01:05:45   tenenbaums there-there there-there [TS]

01:05:47   movies of a kind [TS]

01:05:49   I suppose you squint hard enough yeah [TS]

01:05:51   it's sort of in the same same genre and [TS]

01:05:56   hey night of the iguana [TS]

01:05:57   that's nice that's a good pic he loses [TS]

01:06:01   me with the rundown this is this this is [TS]

01:06:03   his 56 and up this is his Waterloo I [TS]

01:06:07   actually paid good American money to see [TS]

01:06:09   this in the theater [TS]

01:06:10   why would you do that because i am [TS]

01:06:13   married to a woman who quite enjoys the [TS]

01:06:16   movie presence of Dwayne [TS]

01:06:19   rock Johnson and so so i sat in the [TS]

01:06:22   theater and watch the movie and it's um [TS]

01:06:25   it's a movie if it runs for about a [TS]

01:06:28   hundred and eligible for the draft yeah [TS]

01:06:30   you tell me it is eligible there's a [TS]

01:06:32   beginning a middle and then the [TS]

01:06:34   characters speak and something happens [TS]

01:06:36   and then you all go home and and rather [TS]

01:06:38   throw yeah yeah [TS]

01:06:40   and even though I i sat in the movie and [TS]

01:06:42   maintain possession of my five weeks [TS]

01:06:44   throughout if you if you gave me a quiz [TS]

01:06:46   on plot points right now I couldn't tell [TS]

01:06:49   you what happened in it and yet of all [TS]

01:06:51   the movies in Christendom this is one [TS]

01:06:54   David lawyer would pick so i don't even [TS]

01:06:58   he picked where Eagles dare I don't even [TS]

01:07:00   think that is the best Clint Eastwood [TS]

01:07:02   battles Nazis picture that he could have [TS]

01:07:04   picked but without having these heroes [TS]

01:07:07   is a tank driver and I believe Don [TS]

01:07:11   Rickles system Kelly's heroes if if [TS]

01:07:13   memory serves and I think memory is [TS]

01:07:15   serving here that's that's the portion [TS]

01:07:17   of my brain where I stored the plot of [TS]

01:07:19   the rundown is instead possessed by [TS]

01:07:22   we're done wrinkles appear all right [TS]

01:07:24   a puzzling draft it he stumbles late [TS]

01:07:28   ok so sort of like an archos got [TS]

01:07:30   stronger than just all right that might [TS]

01:07:32   that might be related the fact that I [TS]

01:07:33   told people to bring you know three or [TS]

01:07:34   so pics and then they everybody made [TS]

01:07:36   things up afterward maybe my fault a [TS]

01:07:38   little bit now you gotta come prepared [TS]

01:07:39   with Raph you do you have to have a deep [TS]

01:07:41   bored you do i would not if I ever were [TS]

01:07:44   in a draft i would not walk into the [TS]

01:07:46   room with less than a hundred movies [TS]

01:07:48   alright fair enough a hundred movies or [TS]

01:07:51   you're just winging it [TS]

01:07:52   alright and you deserve the ridicule you [TS]

01:07:54   get from a know-nothing jackass [TS]

01:07:55   so let's let's go deep on steve lets his [TS]

01:07:58   pics no no because if he is going to [TS]

01:08:03   pick winnie the pooh and not take this [TS]

01:08:05   exercise seriously then I don't see why [TS]

01:08:07   I should all right fair enough he did he [TS]

01:08:10   pick ups beside adventure well then he [TS]

01:08:11   should have to sing the morning after [TS]

01:08:13   oh well there's got to be a morning that [TS]

01:08:17   let's talk about it i see if i say more [TS]

01:08:19   than seconds I think you have to pay [TS]

01:08:21   them [TS]

01:08:21   let's talk about 10 more and then and [TS]

01:08:23   just forget about Steve let's ok he was [TS]

01:08:25   never here who dan more anode and more [TS]

01:08:29   and well he has the most [TS]

01:08:31   automatic unity I think of anyone in the [TS]

01:08:33   draft him as-as-as you you can tell I [TS]

01:08:36   kind of like the idea of thematic unit e [TS]

01:08:37   I like movies that sort of flow and and [TS]

01:08:40   go into each other [TS]

01:08:41   unfortunately he has the single worst [TS]

01:08:44   pic of and the draft which is which is [TS]

01:08:47   the shadow [TS]

01:08:49   oh now dan and I we don't always see [TS]

01:08:53   eye-to-eye on movies he's a big fan of [TS]

01:08:55   of Hudson Hawk rewrite and I i think [TS]

01:08:59   that is one of the worst motion pictures [TS]

01:09:01   pound-for-pound that has ever been been [TS]

01:09:04   released the shadow I saw the shadow at [TS]

01:09:08   a press screening in 1994 at for my [TS]

01:09:11   college newspaper and i do not have [TS]

01:09:15   happy memories of that time in my life [TS]

01:09:17   perhaps 10 likes it also the shadow one [TS]

01:09:20   of the one of the lamest superhero is I [TS]

01:09:23   have the ability to cloud men's minds [TS]

01:09:26   that's that's good you ask them [TS]

01:09:27   complicated problems now I just started [TS]

01:09:29   they get they get confused disoriented [TS]

01:09:31   and I go about my business and um it was [TS]

01:09:35   Alec Baldwin when Alec Baldwin's was [TS]

01:09:37   desperately trying to find the movie [TS]

01:09:39   franchise this is where you can get your [TS]

01:09:40   l Alec Baldwin action figure we [TS]

01:09:42   determine yes shadow indeed because he [TS]

01:09:44   he he was originally the his franchise [TS]

01:09:47   was gonna be the judge on Brian right [TS]

01:09:49   jack ryan tom clancy beeson he and tom [TS]

01:09:51   clancy didn't didn't get on [TS]

01:09:54   so instead of Harrison Ford walked into [TS]

01:09:56   that role and and Alec Baldwin was well [TS]

01:09:59   I gotta get me on the sweet franchise [TS]

01:10:00   train so the shadow looks like if it's [TS]

01:10:03   got some legs and if appear Boyle is the [TS]

01:10:07   is the lovable chauffeur in that movie I [TS]

01:10:09   want to say so how so how do we do the [TS]

01:10:11   math there if Dan's got uh good pics you [TS]

01:10:14   said but then consistent pics and then [TS]

01:10:16   the shadow [TS]

01:10:17   well everyone has a reach in their draft [TS]

01:10:19   everyone has their third there [TS]

01:10:22   darko in the draft with LeBron James and [TS]

01:10:26   Carmelo Anthony e he grabbed our co and [TS]

01:10:29   and and that's where we are all right [TS]

01:10:31   that's a basketball referee Anders well [TS]

01:10:34   I don't even like basketball [TS]

01:10:37   ok let's go to John siracusa I gave more [TS]

01:10:40   in a run for his money in [TS]

01:10:42   at least in terms of thematic [TS]

01:10:44   consistency at least there was a a [TS]

01:10:46   record a recognizable pattern there was [TS]

01:10:49   no there were no crazy Ivan's to go back [TS]

01:10:51   Jack Ryan and fighting the the the [TS]

01:10:54   Russians in the in the submarine maybe [TS]

01:10:56   I'd give him the edge he was he came the [TS]

01:11:00   closest to to capture in this draft but [TS]

01:11:03   then there's the Good Shepherd the Good [TS]

01:11:06   Shepherd that not so good shepherd is [TS]

01:11:09   what they should call it going like [TS]

01:11:10   Robert De Niro's direction now I don't [TS]

01:11:12   like the movie though the movie is [TS]

01:11:14   basically i'm sure this is discussed [TS]

01:11:16   earlier in the podcast but it's it's the [TS]

01:11:18   history of the CIA is told through the [TS]

01:11:20   eyes of Matt Damon who does not age [TS]

01:11:22   within the movie and robert de niro [TS]

01:11:24   short history [TS]

01:11:25   robert de niro is the head of the CIA [TS]

01:11:27   and his he's a diabetic wreck and each [TS]

01:11:29   scene he's losing another limb and [TS]

01:11:31   towards the end I think he's just a head [TS]

01:11:34   in a box like barking orders at the [TS]

01:11:36   diabetes it's getting me and and [TS]

01:11:39   angelina jolie does the angelina jolie I [TS]

01:11:43   I'm crime crazy and beautiful but mostly [TS]

01:11:45   crazy and it's it's an emotionally dead [TS]

01:11:48   movie to me and yeah it's probably the [TS]

01:11:53   second or speak of the draft wow that's [TS]

01:11:57   it stands out because again a really [TS]

01:11:59   strong draft but everyone has their [TS]

01:12:01   reach everyone has their as their their [TS]

01:12:04   Achilles heel and this was Syracuse's [TS]

01:12:07   alright well that wraps up all the [TS]

01:12:08   people who picked yesterday everyone [TS]

01:12:10   there's no need to talk about anyone [TS]

01:12:11   else someone picked high-fidelity [TS]

01:12:13   magnificent pic yes magnificent good and [TS]

01:12:17   then the ceiling and I you know I'm not [TS]

01:12:19   a Woody Allen fan yeah as I like my [TS]

01:12:21   style I like Woody Allen and I liked [TS]

01:12:23   that movie it's different from his other [TS]

01:12:25   movies [TS]

01:12:25   yeah i think if you were to go for [TS]

01:12:27   nineteen eighties Woody Allen Purple [TS]

01:12:29   Rose of Cairo might be a stronger [TS]

01:12:31   selection but radio days is good to ya [TS]

01:12:33   narrow the best and no no the special [TS]

01:12:38   edition oh ok then [TS]

01:12:40   oh that's alright once really not a [TS]

01:12:44   apart for money this was the the movie [TS]

01:12:46   that I've never heard of this movie [TS]

01:12:48   about it it's not the most well it won [TS]

01:12:50   the oscar for best song but that I love [TS]

01:12:52   no endorsements then I look ya'll [TS]

01:12:54   watching yeah like you say [TS]

01:12:56   I believe the side that this might've [TS]

01:12:59   what ask this might be the most relevant [TS]

01:13:01   song to ever win the Oscar because it's [TS]

01:13:04   a huge part of what happens in the movie [TS]

01:13:07   and it's performed by its stars sure so [TS]

01:13:09   it's actually written by it's actually [TS]

01:13:11   he's not like and now Bruce Springsteen [TS]

01:13:13   is gonna sing a song about a over the [TS]

01:13:15   credits over the credits [TS]

01:13:17   I i was going to say though I I didn't [TS]

01:13:19   recognize it from the title and then I [TS]

01:13:21   looked it up on IMDb and I said oh right [TS]

01:13:23   that one that movie with the Irish [TS]

01:13:25   people use Irish people [TS]

01:13:27   yeah he's irish she's an Eastern [TS]

01:13:28   European Bryant but yeah right that's [TS]

01:13:31   the one [TS]

01:13:31   okay well identified yes thank you and [TS]

01:13:34   dead again [TS]

01:13:36   where is everyone else in the draft seem [TS]

01:13:38   to be the final round is that the shadow [TS]

01:13:41   you you actually I think finish strong a [TS]

01:13:44   good you you were one of the that you [TS]

01:13:46   righted the ship [TS]

01:13:48   oh you look here you closed out the [TS]

01:13:50   draft was my duty to close the draft out [TS]

01:13:52   on a run i couldn't make Star Wars time [TS]

01:13:54   I like that again I think I think dead [TS]

01:13:56   again is some an underappreciated movie [TS]

01:13:59   it's been a while since I've seen it so [TS]

01:14:01   maybe it doesn't hold up as well yeah i [TS]

01:14:02   don't know i gotta go back and want to [TS]

01:14:03   put a few but Kenneth Branagh's a pretty [TS]

01:14:06   good director and that was a that was a [TS]

01:14:08   nice modern day filmed war right little [TS]

01:14:12   Hitchcock little hill ma join in [TS]

01:14:15   alright so far you are you [TS]

01:14:18   we do that around the house the anytime [TS]

01:14:21   the scissors are being picked up so late [TS]

01:14:25   on me who do you think who are winners [TS]

01:14:27   and are losers from the incomparable [TS]

01:14:28   second annual movie draft i think the [TS]

01:14:30   the draft the the film festival i would [TS]

01:14:33   go to the listeners are the real winners [TS]

01:14:35   well yes listening yeah you know who [TS]

01:14:38   really won anyone listening to this [TS]

01:14:40   segment on to the end yeah they got to [TS]

01:14:43   the end now can go on with their lives [TS]

01:14:44   but um i would think that the winner the [TS]

01:14:48   person whose film festival I would I [TS]

01:14:50   would I would pay to go see would be Dan [TS]

01:14:53   Morgan wow I would you want would you [TS]

01:14:55   like to have dinner during the screening [TS]

01:14:56   of the shadow that's when i check your [TS]

01:14:58   email [TS]

01:14:59   that's when I would run to the bathroom [TS]

01:15:00   and maybe pick up some snacks or yeah or [TS]

01:15:03   the whole movie you gotta step out yeah [TS]

01:15:05   yeah I could die [TS]

01:15:07   have a sandwich check on the babysitter [TS]

01:15:09   see how she's doing but yeah I think he [TS]

01:15:12   had the best draft uh second prize would [TS]

01:15:15   be you or siracusa will say you since [TS]

01:15:18   you're in the room with me good yeah [TS]

01:15:20   excellent choice and circus it just may [TS]

01:15:22   be a step behind and naco floor to over [TS]

01:15:25   the map all over the place up and down [TS]

01:15:28   highs and lows but money money was [TS]

01:15:33   points for having a clear plan I don't [TS]

01:15:34   be doing his selections out of a the at [TS]

01:15:37   the drive-in movie theater at the edge [TS]

01:15:39   of town [TS]

01:15:39   exactly exactly and certainly there [TS]

01:15:42   there would be I I think his has an [TS]

01:15:46   audience i'm just not the audience right [TS]

01:15:47   and i think that those that concludes [TS]

01:15:51   all the noble who are in the draft is [TS]

01:15:53   Steve what no there wasn't wasn't there [TS]

01:15:56   you don't want to acknowledge dl5 anyone [TS]

01:15:58   used to acknowledge that person [TS]

01:16:01   all right we need them there you have it [TS]

01:16:03   there's our post podcast and rocks and [TS]

01:16:05   the Hound is your nineteen eighties [TS]

01:16:07   disney pic alright and that wraps it up [TS]

01:16:11   for the incomparables postgame [TS]

01:16:12   post-draft film analysis edition thank [TS]

01:16:16   you Phillip Michaels for being here and [TS]

01:16:17   questioning all of our decision thank [TS]

01:16:19   you it was very fun to ridicule other [TS]

01:16:22   people's fondest choices without being [TS]

01:16:25   in front of them now exactly that's the [TS]

01:16:26   best kind of ridicule when you can do it [TS]

01:16:28   from the safety of distance that's right [TS]

01:16:30   and that brings us to the end of the [TS]

01:16:33   incomparable film festival [TS]
