00:00:34   and we're here because 50 years ago some [TS]

00:00:38   very clever people in England created a [TS]

00:00:41   very strange interesting television show [TS]

00:00:44   that has against all odds survived with [TS]

00:00:49   a few bare spots here and there has [TS]

00:00:53   survived into the 21st century and of [TS]

00:00:56   course talking about Doctor Who which [TS]

00:00:57   turns 50 this very weak and joining me [TS]

00:01:02   to talk in general about Doctor Who [TS]

00:01:04   we're just gonna geek out about Doctor [TS]

00:01:05   Who for a little while [TS]

00:01:06   that's what this is going to be so get [TS]

00:01:07   ready I've got some wonderful guests [TS]

00:01:09   that i've i've put together who have a [TS]

00:01:11   relationship with Doctor Who that goes [TS]

00:01:13   back a little bit longer than 2005 [TS]

00:01:16   believe in the Russell T Davis revival [TS]

00:01:19   you know I'm you remember him from many [TS]

00:01:21   past episodes he's not on as much as [TS]

00:01:23   used because he's very busy but he's [TS]

00:01:25   here tonight it's going fleischmann hi [TS]

00:01:29   medical emergency [TS]

00:01:30   no you got the wrong free trial you're [TS]

00:01:33   killin me you're your recent Steve let's [TS]

00:01:35   think in Babylon 5 as part of Star Trek [TS]

00:01:37   this is part of my crossover dark heresy [TS]

00:01:39   heresy everywhere yet is it is we've [TS]

00:01:41   already were off so far off the rails [TS]

00:01:43   you can't even see them from here that [TS]

00:01:45   Voice you heard is chip chip are you [TS]

00:01:46   going by your your full name now or you [TS]

00:01:49   just chip TV strip I'm out of the closet [TS]

00:01:51   i'm out of the blue closet [TS]

00:01:53   my name is chip sudderth and I'm hosted [TS]

00:01:55   the 2-minute Time Lord podcast right he [TS]

00:01:56   used to be that cheap guy now he has [TS]

00:01:58   chips out of host of the excellent to [TS]

00:02:00   mint of Time Lord podcast i love it i [TS]

00:02:01   also love short podcasts and the two men [TS]

00:02:03   Time Lord generally delivers not always [TS]

00:02:07   but generally delivers on the 2-minute [TS]

00:02:08   promise i love that it's great [TS]

00:02:10   I i disclaim heavily when when it [TS]

00:02:12   doesn't deliver [TS]

00:02:13   around that and and Jason Mann say [TS]

00:02:15   you're a beautiful podcaster probably [TS]

00:02:17   thank you very much same believe this [TS]

00:02:20   man and and Erica and sign is back as [TS]

00:02:23   well she too appears on the Doctor Who [TS]

00:02:25   podcast in her case being Verity which [TS]

00:02:28   is another excellent doctor podcast that [TS]

00:02:30   lives on my iphone in my little [TS]

00:02:32   podcasting app hi Erica [TS]

00:02:33   hello it's nice to be back Yes Doctor [TS]

00:02:35   Who podcasts all around but circular [TS]

00:02:37   logic will only make you dizzy [TS]

00:02:39   alright so here we go doctor-who it's a [TS]

00:02:43   show you may have heard of its it's from [TS]

00:02:47   the BBC it came on in November of 1963 [TS]

00:02:49   and fifty years later it's still on now [TS]

00:02:51   there was a time i have to admit there [TS]

00:02:54   was a time when I I really believed that [TS]

00:02:57   it was never going to come back because [TS]

00:02:58   i remember when dr. went off the air in [TS]

00:03:02   what 1989-90 with sylvester mccoy which [TS]

00:03:07   I didn't you know believe it or not I [TS]

00:03:08   haven't even seen that last season of [TS]

00:03:10   Sylvester McCoy I I never saw when I [TS]

00:03:12   went to college I I starting college in [TS]

00:03:14   the fall of 88 and there was no like [TS]

00:03:16   reliable TV and I never and I i think [TS]

00:03:19   i've i've never seen that last that last [TS]

00:03:22   season but it was often it was gone and [TS]

00:03:23   then there was the abortive attempt to [TS]

00:03:25   bring it back on Fox that led to just [TS]

00:03:28   the backdoor pilot that they shot with [TS]

00:03:30   paul mcgann that basically any [TS]

00:03:32   enthusiasm in the network so they just [TS]

00:03:33   sort of burn it off and it was never [TS]

00:03:36   picked up and it really looked like [TS]

00:03:37   doctor who was was dead dead dead and i [TS]

00:03:40   always thought that you know that was a [TS]

00:03:42   shame because we would have this 50th [TS]

00:03:43   anniversary we look back and say well [TS]

00:03:45   it's too bad that that old thing didn't [TS]

00:03:47   make it and in fact instead we are in [TS]

00:03:51   the midst of this avalanche of Doctor [TS]

00:03:55   Who stuff for the 50th anniversary you [TS]

00:03:57   can buy Doctor Who shirts at hot topic [TS]

00:04:00   that kind of thing that all right there [TS]

00:04:02   but I my my son my son went as the 11th [TS]

00:04:08   doctor for halloween this year and he [TS]

00:04:10   went to school and was very happy to [TS]

00:04:13   point out and actually my wife took a [TS]

00:04:16   picture and texted it to me at work that [TS]

00:04:18   he was not the only 11th doctor in his [TS]

00:04:21   class my awesome bowties are cool and [TS]

00:04:26   and yeah fourth-graders like bowties and [TS]

00:04:28   fences it turns out so it's just I I [TS]

00:04:31   kind of can't believe that we've gotten [TS]

00:04:33   to this point that this crazy show has a [TS]

00:04:35   has first time in America speaking as as [TS]

00:04:38   as for people in in the united states [TS]

00:04:41   that is taking off to the point where [TS]

00:04:43   you can buy Doctor Who shirts and hot [TS]

00:04:44   topic and people seem to actually know [TS]

00:04:46   what the show is because there was that [TS]

00:04:47   time in the nineties where my favorite [TS]

00:04:50   doctor who joke by the way i'm gonna [TS]

00:04:52   share it now which is how many doctor [TS]

00:04:55   who fans does it take to screw in a [TS]

00:04:56   light bulb I don't know Jason how many [TS]

00:04:58   none they just sit in the dark and wait [TS]

00:05:01   for it to come back on [TS]

00:05:02   oh that's great joke instead it's [TS]

00:05:05   irrelevant now it's totally irrelevant [TS]

00:05:07   we can laugh about it now but there was [TS]

00:05:09   a time in the middle in the nineties in [TS]

00:05:12   the early 2000s when it was painfully [TS]

00:05:14   true although to be fair to the those [TS]

00:05:17   folks who were doing something during [TS]

00:05:19   that time there was an awful lot going [TS]

00:05:20   on during the quote-unquote wilderness [TS]

00:05:22   years they were novels there without Big [TS]

00:05:25   Finish audios so it really wasn't quite [TS]

00:05:27   as as as dead as people thought it was [TS]

00:05:29   for me I i think actually the active of [TS]

00:05:33   graduating from high school and going [TS]

00:05:35   off to college as the show was kind of [TS]

00:05:37   fading out it was this kind of double [TS]

00:05:39   double fade out for me where I just sort [TS]

00:05:42   of wasn't even aware of anything until I [TS]

00:05:46   i read somewhere in I guess 2004 that it [TS]

00:05:49   was coming back i remember the I would [TS]

00:05:51   visit that the BBC's cult section every [TS]

00:05:54   now and then write a great section that [TS]

00:05:57   had Doctor Who in it even the BBC had [TS]

00:05:59   filed doctor who are way under cult at [TS]

00:06:01   that point and then all of a sudden [TS]

00:06:03   there was this it's coming back banner [TS]

00:06:05   and it was a and that was the Russell [TS]

00:06:07   Russell Davis relaunch announcement that [TS]

00:06:09   really started the ball the ball rolling [TS]

00:06:11   for for all the craziness that we have [TS]

00:06:14   today I think that the big finish audio [TS]

00:06:17   and the the novel's those were the it [TS]

00:06:20   wasn't there out of the mainstream I was [TS]

00:06:21   a huge Who fan and I kind of lost track [TS]

00:06:24   of it and then it was gone and i didn't [TS]

00:06:26   i didn't know i mean pre-internet maybe [TS]

00:06:29   was harder to find you have to go [TS]

00:06:30   especially stores or you'd be more tuned [TS]

00:06:33   into fan conventions and things like [TS]

00:06:34   that in America there's less going on in [TS]

00:06:36   any case but i don't think i was aware [TS]

00:06:38   until realm [TS]

00:06:39   silly recently you know certainly pass [TS]

00:06:41   the nineteen nineties how much was being [TS]

00:06:43   produced in those years so it wasn't [TS]

00:06:46   clear i mean i think there was that [TS]

00:06:47   there was that effect to that even those [TS]

00:06:49   of us who like the show if we didn't do [TS]

00:06:52   the work we didn't know that there was [TS]

00:06:54   still stuff being produced that was if [TS]

00:06:56   not can at least you know close to [TS]

00:06:58   cannon that we probably would have [TS]

00:06:59   enjoyed if you were British fan you had [TS]

00:07:02   a little more access to that and if you [TS]

00:07:04   were in America you had to be of the [TS]

00:07:05   star log consuming variety of science [TS]

00:07:10   fiction and I suppose or just like my [TS]

00:07:13   mom who would do anything to search of [TS]

00:07:15   Doctor Who stuff but honestly she kind [TS]

00:07:17   of she read a few of the first new [TS]

00:07:20   adventures novels i think with the [TS]

00:07:21   seventh doctor and I think I think that [TS]

00:07:23   it just didn't do it for her so she [TS]

00:07:25   didn't continue with it and since she [TS]

00:07:27   didn't continue that I certainly wasn't [TS]

00:07:28   gonna spend my own money on stuff so I [TS]

00:07:31   didn't really read them either so let's [TS]

00:07:32   put our part of history with this since [TS]

00:07:35   the show has 50 years of history and and [TS]

00:07:38   last time I checked all of us are our [TS]

00:07:40   young groove and the show we're talking [TS]

00:07:42   about so far away with it doesn't make [TS]

00:07:45   uh I bit maybe I could ask each of you [TS]

00:07:49   in turn for a little bit of your your [TS]

00:07:50   story about how you initially discovered [TS]

00:07:54   that doctor who and then if a you know [TS]

00:07:57   if you've got a story about the [TS]

00:07:59   wilderness years and if you if you kind [TS]

00:08:01   of focused on other things and how you [TS]

00:08:03   kind of us snapback to it because now [TS]

00:08:05   we've got people participating in [TS]

00:08:06   podcast about Doctor Who so obviously [TS]

00:08:07   that enthusiasm level came back if it [TS]

00:08:09   ever went away [TS]

00:08:11   chip what about you how did you how do [TS]

00:08:13   you discover this this this crazy thing [TS]

00:08:15   and and how'd you get where you are [TS]

00:08:17   today I discovered it in the traditional [TS]

00:08:21   manner of my forefathers which was a [TS]

00:08:23   fellow teenage geek in high school said [TS]

00:08:26   there's this show on PBS in the [TS]

00:08:29   afternoons on Saturdays and i discovered [TS]

00:08:32   the i discovered doctor who with Peter [TS]

00:08:35   Davis and who was the fifth doctor in [TS]

00:08:39   his episodes were airing sort of in the [TS]

00:08:41   mid-eighties on PBS and at that time I [TS]

00:08:46   was just starved for science fiction at [TS]

00:08:49   any at any level I'd take it was on it [TS]

00:08:52   was [TS]

00:08:52   on an unusual time i noticed immediately [TS]

00:08:55   that the special effects weren't quite [TS]

00:08:58   up to the level of say Knight Rider [TS]

00:09:01   but but there it was still it was still [TS]

00:09:05   new and different and an odd uh maybe it [TS]

00:09:10   was the british accents maybe it was uh [TS]

00:09:12   the UH rapidly constantly rotating cast [TS]

00:09:17   and Lord knows when I saw the app the [TS]

00:09:20   fifth the five doctors the episode that [TS]

00:09:23   um that first reunited all of the ball [TS]

00:09:28   of them that what 20th anniversary right [TS]

00:09:31   yeah yeah the 20th anniversary in it if [TS]

00:09:34   it first reunited all but all of the [TS]

00:09:38   doctors except for tom baker who got a [TS]

00:09:41   cameo when I first saw that I was just [TS]

00:09:45   amazed there was a there was another [TS]

00:09:47   multi dr. story before that but that was [TS]

00:09:50   before my time so it might as well not [TS]

00:09:52   have existed but there is a sense when [TS]

00:09:54   watching the five doctors that was i [TS]

00:09:56   watch that early on in my 10 years dr. [TS]

00:09:57   fan too [TS]

00:09:58   there is a sense that there's this [TS]

00:09:59   yawning chasm of history that you have [TS]

00:10:02   you know nothing about but you can tell [TS]

00:10:04   that it's there and that these [TS]

00:10:05   references are flying fast and these [TS]

00:10:07   people are relevant and as a as a new [TS]

00:10:10   watcher you're like I have no idea [TS]

00:10:12   what's going on here but obviously [TS]

00:10:14   there's a lot to know and learn that [TS]

00:10:16   that I have no idea what these [TS]

00:10:18   references are at all [TS]

00:10:19   indeed and I i kept up with it through [TS]

00:10:22   college I remember watching sylvester [TS]

00:10:25   mccoy is remembrance of the Daleks on a [TS]

00:10:27   bootleg VHS tape that had been converted [TS]

00:10:30   from powell to Wow ntsc and all that [TS]

00:10:33   other good stuff crowding in friends [TS]

00:10:35   dorm room to watch it but then the show [TS]

00:10:39   disappeared and just like you I kind of [TS]

00:10:42   forgot about it my friend who got me [TS]

00:10:44   into the show noted the paul mcgann TV [TS]

00:10:48   movie and I called my attention to it [TS]

00:10:52   but i missed it and then it fell [TS]

00:10:54   completely from my brain until until the [TS]

00:10:58   rtd series came back and that was when I [TS]

00:11:01   not only rediscovered the show but [TS]

00:11:02   absolutely fell in love with it [TS]

00:11:04   to be fair the eighth [TS]

00:11:06   these was a televised sci-fi wasteland [TS]

00:11:11   the eighties and early nineties other [TS]

00:11:12   than like Star Trek The Next Generation [TS]

00:11:14   there were not a lot that was in the in [TS]

00:11:17   the mid-nineties there was sort of a [TS]

00:11:19   renaissance of like syndicated sci-fi [TS]

00:11:20   series and the sci-fi channel and and a [TS]

00:11:23   bunch of stuff like that Babylon 5 [TS]

00:11:25   but you know that before that period it [TS]

00:11:29   was kind of vacant and that's my [TS]

00:11:32   recollection of one of the reasons why [TS]

00:11:34   that doctor who like you said kind of [TS]

00:11:36   snag your attention was there wasn't a [TS]

00:11:39   lot like will you know when you're when [TS]

00:11:42   you're in the desert and and you know [TS]

00:11:45   there's there's nothing to like that [TS]

00:11:46   thirst as a kid especially as a sci-fi [TS]

00:11:49   fan and you see some strange monster and [TS]

00:11:52   a guy with a time machine you're like [TS]

00:11:53   wait wait a second what is this [TS]

00:11:55   so there's more of this there's lots [TS]

00:11:57   more of this let's let's do that because [TS]

00:12:00   that you know there wasn't and i'm not [TS]

00:12:02   saying it in a derogatory way that there [TS]

00:12:03   wasn't anything else but certainly do it [TS]

00:12:07   wasn't as if it was competing with 30 [TS]

00:12:09   other shows that you could watch you're [TS]

00:12:11   like well hi this is a weird show i [TS]

00:12:12   haven't heard of forget about it was [TS]

00:12:13   like there was nothing there were they [TS]

00:12:15   were so few shows and they would get [TS]

00:12:17   cancelled after four episodes and then [TS]

00:12:19   you feel about it after next one so that [TS]

00:12:22   was a part of it too [TS]

00:12:23   yeah i was i was otherwise getting my [TS]

00:12:25   science fiction fix from anime like [TS]

00:12:27   programs like Robotech and things like [TS]

00:12:30   that [TS]

00:12:31   doctor-who yeah by comparison was [TS]

00:12:33   respectable which wasn't exactly the [TS]

00:12:36   reputation that had and britain at the [TS]

00:12:37   time [TS]

00:12:38   sure Erica what about you what's your [TS]

00:12:39   what's your history with doctor who you [TS]

00:12:42   mentioned your mother it was your mother [TS]

00:12:43   a fan before you indeed well sort of [TS]

00:12:46   at the same time I i discovered it in [TS]

00:12:48   the manner of by your mother she has [TS]

00:12:51   been she was a science-fiction fan from [TS]

00:12:53   long before I was born [TS]

00:12:54   I by saw Star Trek or Star Wars in utero [TS]

00:12:57   so I mean I was raised on the stuff and [TS]

00:13:00   I think the closest second figures i was [TS]

00:13:02   about five years old when Mom [TS]

00:13:04   stumbledupon doctor who on PBS and [TS]

00:13:08   because she was a stay-at-home mom at [TS]

00:13:10   the time I just watch whatever she [TS]

00:13:12   watched and that was a lot of Doctor Who [TS]

00:13:14   so I grew up on it and i always tell [TS]

00:13:17   people that for me doctor who is like [TS]

00:13:19   family [TS]

00:13:20   and I don't think people quite [TS]

00:13:21   understand the degree to which this is [TS]

00:13:23   true for me it was almost like he was an [TS]

00:13:24   uncle that just visited every week it [TS]

00:13:27   was such a it imprinted on me at such a [TS]

00:13:30   young age as part of the fabric of our [TS]

00:13:32   lives at that time and it was my [TS]

00:13:35   favorite show [TS]

00:13:36   I'm my one of my good friends whom I'm [TS]

00:13:38   still friends with to this day we met on [TS]

00:13:40   the bus on the way to kindergarten and [TS]

00:13:42   bonded because we were both fans of [TS]

00:13:43   Doctor Who so i mean that's that's the [TS]

00:13:45   kind of lasting friendship that you can [TS]

00:13:48   derive from from loving doctor who and I [TS]

00:13:51   just grew up watching it and my mom was [TS]

00:13:54   such a hardcore fan she was going to [TS]

00:13:55   Doctor Who conventions when I was young [TS]

00:13:57   like other kids had parents who went on [TS]

00:14:00   you know business trips my mom would go [TS]

00:14:02   after dr. conventions and meet you know [TS]

00:14:05   Patrick Troughton and jon pertwee colin [TS]

00:14:07   baker and Tom Baker I mean she met most [TS]

00:14:09   of them at the time and I was very [TS]

00:14:12   jealous but I was too little to to tag [TS]

00:14:14   along as far as she was concerned she [TS]

00:14:16   wanted to go half have fun on her own [TS]

00:14:17   and like most kids when they reach a [TS]

00:14:21   certain age they sort of start to [TS]

00:14:24   staining their family a little bit and [TS]

00:14:26   that's kind of what happened [TS]

00:14:28   I never disdain doctor who but I sort of [TS]

00:14:30   fell off a little bit when I when I went [TS]

00:14:33   to college and in late in high school we [TS]

00:14:35   for me there was never really a [TS]

00:14:38   wilderness years period because my mom [TS]

00:14:40   was such a crazy hardcore fan that she [TS]

00:14:41   videotaped everything I mean there was a [TS]

00:14:44   time when the Super Bowl or something [TS]

00:14:46   was on and the same day as PBS is [TS]

00:14:49   running a doctor who marathon and this [TS]

00:14:51   created quite a rift in our household [TS]

00:14:53   and eventually my mom just decided to [TS]

00:14:55   rent a VCR because we didn't own one in [TS]

00:14:58   those days rent a hotel room and the [TS]

00:15:01   entire day taping doctor who [TS]

00:15:04   so for me it was just always at my [TS]

00:15:06   fingertips but I dropped off for a [TS]

00:15:08   little while and then when I went to [TS]

00:15:10   college I kind of got back on the horse [TS]

00:15:13   a little bit because I began the the [TS]

00:15:15   grand tradition of proselytizing and had [TS]

00:15:18   a couple of of roommates and friends in [TS]

00:15:21   college that I was like you guys are are [TS]

00:15:23   geeky Star Trek fans you must watch [TS]

00:15:25   Doctor Who and I did such a good job [TS]

00:15:27   that actually my my roommate Jeff when [TS]

00:15:30   the 1996 TV movie came out on Fox he [TS]

00:15:33   had an exam a college exam scheduled [TS]

00:15:35   against it and so he went to the exam [TS]

00:15:37   filled in a little scantron sheet ABCD [TS]

00:15:39   ABCD ABCD ABCD was out in 10 minutes and [TS]

00:15:43   ran home to catch the most of the movie [TS]

00:15:45   so that's one of my great achievements [TS]

00:15:50   in life is is turning on somebody to [TS]

00:15:53   Doctor Who that much that they were [TS]

00:15:54   willing to fail an exam so it in the in [TS]

00:15:57   the in the wilderness years you would [TS]

00:16:00   you say you never really left [TS]

00:16:02   I really didn't too much it was actually [TS]

00:16:04   maybe the late wilderness years because [TS]

00:16:07   after college when I got a real job that [TS]

00:16:10   was when I sort of stopped taking it [TS]

00:16:13   upon myself to rewatch the stories so I [TS]

00:16:16   I went through a kind of a really long [TS]

00:16:17   drought after that and didn't honestly [TS]

00:16:21   when the show came back in 2005 I was [TS]

00:16:23   not looking forward to it [TS]

00:16:24   I was I was one of those Grumpy Old fans [TS]

00:16:27   it was just like oh my god they're gonna [TS]

00:16:28   screw it up [TS]

00:16:29   I don't really want to watch it so I [TS]

00:16:31   didn't even start watching the 2005 [TS]

00:16:33   series until I don't know [TS]

00:16:35   halfway through maybe maybe not until [TS]

00:16:37   all of them had already aired and my mom [TS]

00:16:39   of course had them cuz she downloaded [TS]

00:16:41   them and hanuman like CDs or something [TS]

00:16:44   so when I finally got around to watching [TS]

00:16:46   it took me a while to warm up to it but [TS]

00:16:48   then but then I liked it but I i guess i [TS]

00:16:51   was never as into the new series as I [TS]

00:16:53   was into the classic series until more [TS]

00:16:55   recently when I discovered fandom which [TS]

00:16:57   was a thing that i did not know existed [TS]

00:16:59   at all until about two years ago [TS]

00:17:02   Thank You Twitter wow you discovered [TS]

00:17:04   fandom through twitter i did it and my [TS]

00:17:07   husband incidentally yeah so what do I [TS]

00:17:09   was going to get to that you didn't just [TS]

00:17:11   maybe friend your kindergarten friend on [TS]

00:17:13   the bus through a love doctor who but [TS]

00:17:15   you also met your husband through doctor [TS]

00:17:16   who's so pretty impressive he has a [TS]

00:17:18   doctor who podcast which I started [TS]

00:17:19   listening to and then started talking to [TS]

00:17:21   him on Twitter and one thing led to [TS]

00:17:24   another and now i'm moving to Canada so [TS]

00:17:26   there you go [TS]

00:17:27   oh my gosh i was gonna ask if a it was [TS]

00:17:29   that you know the leaf fell out of the [TS]

00:17:31   sky land in your face and then yep he [TS]

00:17:34   rescue across the street but you know a [TS]

00:17:36   Twitter open would get that reference [TS]

00:17:38   plant foot want to come on let's get out [TS]

00:17:41   of bird a bird follow the city it's a [TS]

00:17:44   just wait and serenity reference to win [TS]

00:17:46   why should I am a leaf on the wind right [TS]

00:17:48   no it's not like it's not like nothing [TS]

00:17:52   walking into the lane it's about when [TS]

00:17:53   Claire's parents met him that one kid [TS]

00:17:56   alright what about You Glenn you did you [TS]

00:17:58   also dug you know as a nerdy teenager [TS]

00:18:01   preteen flip past PBS and discover a man [TS]

00:18:04   with a long scarf perhaps yeah i'm [TS]

00:18:06   assuming as always and I'm the oldest [TS]

00:18:08   person on this podcast is usually the [TS]

00:18:09   case is usually safe that and it was [TS]

00:18:12   great losses on yes mr. an older man [TS]

00:18:15   united team old man forever and yeah I [TS]

00:18:19   recall so I lived in eugene organ lovely [TS]

00:18:23   town Oregon and PBS there it seemed like [TS]

00:18:27   doctor who was always on there was some [TS]

00:18:29   point I don't know how old I was i think [TS]

00:18:31   i must have been early teens we move to [TS]

00:18:34   oriental I was aged 11 and I think for [TS]

00:18:36   like six years while i was in my parents [TS]

00:18:39   house before I went to college that it [TS]

00:18:42   feels like doctor who was always on PPS [TS]

00:18:44   i have no idea how often was on but [TS]

00:18:46   whenever i want to watch it there was [TS]

00:18:48   like it was all over you know key of [TS]

00:18:49   time marathon or it would be like 11 at [TS]

00:18:52   night and I turn on the television and [TS]

00:18:55   there would be somebody they showed it [TS]

00:18:57   was the weirdest thing that they showed [TS]

00:18:59   Tom Baker almost exclusively now if I [TS]

00:19:02   remember the time frame they were not [TS]

00:19:04   showing the because this was actually [TS]

00:19:07   after those episodes and this is years [TS]

00:19:10   of age they weren't showing the [TS]

00:19:11   contemporary Peter Davison and colin [TS]

00:19:14   baker episodes i don't think i think [TS]

00:19:17   they were showing Tom Baker largely and [TS]

00:19:20   then later and remember what it was it [TS]

00:19:22   must have been when I was mostly after [TS]

00:19:24   college I moved back to seattle in the [TS]

00:19:25   early nineties that's when I watched all [TS]

00:19:27   the Jon Pertwee's so whoever was running [TS]

00:19:29   it then I don't know what cable channel [TS]

00:19:31   had in the early nineties i think it [TS]

00:19:33   must have been cable not PBS was it not [TS]

00:19:35   on ksps at that time because i know they [TS]

00:19:37   were instrumental in variance Doctor Who [TS]

00:19:39   to the northwest [TS]

00:19:40   well boy you know i have a recollection [TS]

00:19:42   of being cable but i remember watching a [TS]

00:19:44   seemingly infinite amount of jon pertwee [TS]

00:19:46   because i didn't watch her until after [TS]

00:19:48   baker and it's kind of like watching you [TS]

00:19:51   know Roger Moore and then Sean Connery [TS]

00:19:53   don't know what to make of things [TS]

00:19:55   alright let's take a break from Doctor [TS]

00:19:59   will then travel backwards in time and [TS]

00:21:54   for once again sponsoring the [TS]

00:21:56   incomparable doctor who is not a it [TS]

00:22:00   generally has only been the old series [TS]

00:22:02   on non-commercial TV they did cut up [TS]

00:22:04   something some seventies episodes and [TS]

00:22:07   have you know weird faden's and fade out [TS]

00:22:09   for commercials but generally I think it [TS]

00:22:11   was always on PBS and [TS]

00:22:12   us with a couple exceptions but they do [TS]

00:22:15   this thing where they would show i [TS]

00:22:16   recall let me especially Tom Baker's [TS]

00:22:18   they would do that [TS]

00:22:19   Baker Wednesday running as they would [TS]

00:22:20   take a ton of them and stick them [TS]

00:22:21   together so i could sit and watch like [TS]

00:22:23   two or more hours they must've had a lot [TS]

00:22:26   of space to fill on saturdays and [TS]

00:22:27   sundays and I missed a lot of time to [TS]

00:22:29   kill at that point my life but so I [TS]

00:22:30   think I I want to believe that i've seen [TS]

00:22:32   almost all the Tom Baker series and [TS]

00:22:35   quite a bit of jon pertwee but you know [TS]

00:22:37   I've only seen a handful of i rewatched [TS]

00:22:40   a via netflix in the last few years i [TS]

00:22:43   went back and looked at some stuff I [TS]

00:22:44   have never seen William Hartnell episode [TS]

00:22:45   full I don't you ever seen a patrick [TS]

00:22:47   troughton episode i've seen the three [TS]

00:22:49   doctors have seen the five doctors I've [TS]

00:22:51   seen a little bit of sylvester mccoy i [TS]

00:22:53   did watch the paul mcgann movie when it [TS]

00:22:56   was originally aired because i was so [TS]

00:22:58   excited so sad you mean you didn't you [TS]

00:23:01   didn't watch roseanne instead haha like [TS]

00:23:05   the rest of America [TS]

00:23:07   yeah my yes there might have been a [TS]

00:23:09   better choice strangely enough but then [TS]

00:23:10   I and then I was out i can remember [TS]

00:23:12   Jason you know probably talked about [TS]

00:23:13   when doctor who is being rebooted even [TS]

00:23:15   we're probably already talking about [TS]

00:23:16   stuff priplanus and I know I've seen I [TS]

00:23:19   was well I was excited to see [TS]

00:23:21   Christopher Eccleston because I thought [TS]

00:23:23   he's a fascinating performer and so I've [TS]

00:23:25   watched everything since 2005 so Mike my [TS]

00:23:28   gap sorry sir of one to five six and [TS]

00:23:31   seven but you know jon pertwee and Tom [TS]

00:23:33   Baker sort of define a big hunk of the [TS]

00:23:35   area so i feel like i have a good [TS]

00:23:36   grounding in then we're going to talk [TS]

00:23:38   about about about good doctors and [TS]

00:23:40   favorite doctors in a bit but i'll give [TS]

00:23:41   you my i'll give you my quick version of [TS]

00:23:45   this sketch I to discovered i remember [TS]

00:23:48   clearly because I was in seventh grade [TS]

00:23:50   so it would have been like 1983 1982-83 [TS]

00:23:54   and I and I was flipping around on a [TS]

00:23:57   Saturday afternoon and on i want to say [TS]

00:24:00   the PBS station from San Francisco kqed [TS]

00:24:02   not the one from Sacramento which is [TS]

00:24:04   where i watch most my doctor who [TS]

00:24:06   there was a man in a long scarf climbing [TS]

00:24:09   up the side of what looked like sort of [TS]

00:24:11   a you know cardboard might have to say [TS]

00:24:14   that tower and and being attacked by a [TS]

00:24:17   guy in it like a tentacle in a in like a [TS]

00:24:21   guy in a suit with a tentacle and uh I [TS]

00:24:24   now know this is the [TS]

00:24:26   power of Kroll that I was seeing and I [TS]

00:24:29   was again enthralled like what the heck [TS]

00:24:31   is this thing this is not like if other [TS]

00:24:33   things on TV and I love science fiction [TS]

00:24:36   and let's let's see what it is and i [TS]

00:24:37   started to watch it and and the the [TS]

00:24:39   channel nine the kqed broadcast were [TS]

00:24:42   fuzzy where I was we lived about a [TS]

00:24:44   hundred miles away from San Francisco [TS]

00:24:45   and also it's sporadic but it turned out [TS]

00:24:49   that saturday nights on the other much [TS]

00:24:51   closer station they would edit together [TS]

00:24:54   an entire story in that omnibus [TS]

00:24:56   collection and eric and and it was short [TS]

00:24:58   they would do to so I so I started [TS]

00:25:01   watching every Saturday night also not [TS]

00:25:03   having anything else to do on a Saturday [TS]

00:25:05   night and they played tom baker and I [TS]

00:25:07   think this was what PBS stations that [TS]

00:25:09   they play tom baker through and then [TS]

00:25:10   they played Tom Baker through again you [TS]

00:25:12   would get to lakopolous he would [TS]

00:25:14   regenerate the moment has been prepared [TS]

00:25:15   for and robots and your back to robot [TS]

00:25:18   merely what the heck just happened now [TS]

00:25:19   it's the early seventies again and it [TS]

00:25:22   was just cycle through those kind of [TS]

00:25:23   endlessly and then I remember knowing [TS]

00:25:26   enough about it and I can't even [TS]

00:25:28   remember how it must have been a starter [TS]

00:25:30   log kind of thing finding out about [TS]

00:25:32   Peter Davison is that as the fifth [TS]

00:25:33   doctor and getting really excited when [TS]

00:25:35   it cycled all the way back around to [TS]

00:25:37   look opolis that we would be able to [TS]

00:25:39   shoot right on into the cast out and and [TS]

00:25:43   and of course then what happened was not [TS]

00:25:47   robot that it was spared from space we [TS]

00:25:49   were back at with jon pertwee and i'm [TS]

00:25:50   like 'who so close and now it's going to [TS]

00:25:52   be forever before we work our way back [TS]

00:25:54   up to nineteen eighty-one because we [TS]

00:25:57   just went all the way back to nineteen [TS]

00:25:58   seventy da so you think that was I [TS]

00:26:02   watching the same stuff you were then it [TS]

00:26:03   sounds like they cycle because I well [TS]

00:26:05   today yeah i think what different media [TS]

00:26:07   stations provide different packages but [TS]

00:26:08   anyway eventually my PBS station locally [TS]

00:26:11   did run through all of Peter Davison and [TS]

00:26:13   then got to colin baker and like I said [TS]

00:26:16   I i think i caught the first season and [TS]

00:26:19   parts of the second season of of of [TS]

00:26:21   sylvester mccoy i adn't in the in high [TS]

00:26:24   school I definitely you might my fever [TS]

00:26:26   reached its peak I i have attended three [TS]

00:26:30   Doctor Who conventions in my life [TS]

00:26:32   one of which was last year and I i went [TS]

00:26:34   there to be on a panel with chip so [TS]

00:26:36   thanks chip [TS]

00:26:37   you're welcome and any other two or when [TS]

00:26:39   I was in high school I went to one in [TS]

00:26:40   san jose and one in sacramento and i met [TS]

00:26:42   patrick troughton actually what was [TS]

00:26:45   super awesome and that was right when [TS]

00:26:47   the two doctors was coming out which is [TS]

00:26:48   his episode with cock with colin baker [TS]

00:26:50   and yeah that was that was pretty cool [TS]

00:26:53   stuff and actually one of the great [TS]

00:26:55   great reasons to go to a convention in [TS]

00:26:56   those days if you time it right was that [TS]

00:26:58   you would see episodes that that were [TS]

00:26:59   just not available in America and they [TS]

00:27:01   would bring the PAL tapes with them and [TS]

00:27:04   just play up an episode you play a whole [TS]

00:27:07   story in the middle of a giant [TS]

00:27:08   convention hall and everybody would just [TS]

00:27:10   sit there and watch it which was kind of [TS]

00:27:12   crazy or possibly not available in the [TS]

00:27:14   UK either because the five doctors was [TS]

00:27:16   actually shown the very first airing was [TS]

00:27:18   I didn't believe in chicago at the [TS]

00:27:21   convention there and the people in the [TS]

00:27:22   UK where po2 very angry and then with [TS]

00:27:25   the whole circulating the tapes thing [TS]

00:27:26   where i actually got their specific [TS]

00:27:28   episodes that I knew really well because [TS]

00:27:30   I met somebody who in like I met a guy [TS]

00:27:33   from Texas who sent me like three VHS [TS]

00:27:35   tapes full of Peter Davison stories but [TS]

00:27:38   only some of them and I know those [TS]

00:27:39   really well and others i've seen like [TS]

00:27:41   once or twice so anyway you know I was [TS]

00:27:43   really enthusiastic for a while and then [TS]

00:27:45   and this is people who love Sylvester [TS]

00:27:47   McCoy will will will la be sad now but [TS]

00:27:50   you know that I was less interested in [TS]

00:27:52   him and hit and his style that they went [TS]

00:27:55   with the show and I was getting ready to [TS]

00:27:57   graduate from high school I just sort of [TS]

00:27:58   felt it just sort of fell off my radar [TS]

00:28:00   and I didn't pay attention to it anymore [TS]

00:28:02   and I I I think I i think i taped a [TS]

00:28:05   bunch of old episodes I threw away the [TS]

00:28:07   tapes at some point when i was home from [TS]

00:28:09   college like that whatever I've moved on [TS]

00:28:10   in my life I little TARDIS model that i [TS]

00:28:13   built a balsa-wood I put that in the [TS]

00:28:15   garbage cans very sad but I'm so then [TS]

00:28:19   and i watch the poem again a movie too [TS]

00:28:22   and was you know that was it that was [TS]

00:28:24   just looking at it he said I've done but [TS]

00:28:27   but I so here's the thing is I remember [TS]

00:28:29   when the first episode of the of the new [TS]

00:28:31   series leaked on the internet and that [TS]

00:28:34   guy from The Canadian Broadcasting [TS]

00:28:35   Company that he put it on bittorrent or [TS]

00:28:38   Predis esser too [TS]

00:28:40   torrent and i downloaded and i watched [TS]

00:28:42   it and I was um I just wanted to see I [TS]

00:28:45   was I was very curious and and I didn't [TS]

00:28:48   expect much after after all that time [TS]

00:28:52   and i was pleasantly surprised and I was [TS]

00:28:54   very excited about it and so I I after [TS]

00:28:56   watching it I i said to my wife who had [TS]

00:28:58   no knowledge doctor but also you gotta [TS]

00:29:00   watch this and then from there I spread [TS]

00:29:02   that around two to my friends but the [TS]

00:29:04   problem was of course that didn't air in [TS]

00:29:06   the US for like a year after that but [TS]

00:29:10   that got me really back into it that so [TS]

00:29:12   the new series rekindled all of that [TS]

00:29:14   useless information that i had gathered [TS]

00:29:16   over the course of about five years when [TS]

00:29:18   I was just turning into a teenager the [TS]

00:29:20   fact that the gunfighters with cereal Z [TS]

00:29:22   or Zed for those who are listening in [TS]

00:29:24   other countries things like that [TS]

00:29:27   why do I will because I read all these [TS]

00:29:28   freakin doctor who books about this [TS]

00:29:30   about shows I've episode I've get to see [TS]

00:29:32   or that are lost forever why did I do it [TS]

00:29:35   I don't know I wanted to know everything [TS]

00:29:36   there was about Doctor Who so it all [TS]

00:29:39   came rushing back and so although all [TS]

00:29:41   those parts of my brain that we're just [TS]

00:29:42   sitting there going hey I know lots of [TS]

00:29:44   things about Doctor Who use me i am from [TS]

00:29:47   a database of Doctor Who knowledge now [TS]

00:29:49   50 years 50th anniversary now i can [TS]

00:29:52   access that information so that's my [TS]

00:29:54   that's my story came all the way back [TS]

00:29:56   let me ask me about the underground [TS]

00:29:57   today the fan conventions and it seemed [TS]

00:30:00   like for what I've heard in the older [TS]

00:30:01   days and not even that far back but like [TS]

00:30:03   when you talk about meeting Patrick [TS]

00:30:04   Troughton that that the events even if [TS]

00:30:07   they were let's say intimate that there [TS]

00:30:08   is less there's more interaction I [TS]

00:30:11   sounds like things are a lot more [TS]

00:30:12   distant these days of any of the kinds [TS]

00:30:14   of events because there's so many more [TS]

00:30:15   fans in the fandom is more intense [TS]

00:30:17   whether it's doctor who r star tracker [TS]

00:30:19   or whatever did you did you have more [TS]

00:30:21   direct interaction with the not some of [TS]

00:30:23   the folks now is still behind i think [TS]

00:30:25   what you're talking about is more a [TS]

00:30:26   general sci-fi convention doesn't have [TS]

00:30:28   that much interaction I've actually [TS]

00:30:29   found that the Doctor Who specific [TS]

00:30:31   conventions tend to be very interactive [TS]

00:30:34   for example yeah for example Gallifrey [TS]

00:30:37   one the convention that Jason was [TS]

00:30:38   talking about earlier this past year [TS]

00:30:41   actually that's where i got married if [TS]

00:30:43   you want to talk about how to protect or [TS]

00:30:44   houki i am yeah it's all coming out [TS]

00:30:47   it sure is up but you could just be [TS]

00:30:49   standing up i was standing in the bar i [TS]

00:30:51   remember for this year the year before [TS]

00:30:52   and I turned and looked [TS]

00:30:54   realize that that was Paul McGann [TS]

00:30:55   standing two people away from me and [TS]

00:30:58   just you know people hanging out [TS]

00:30:59   I'll Bacharach upon this not only [TS]

00:31:02   because I was there to see the wedding [TS]

00:31:03   but because the there is something about [TS]

00:31:06   Doctor Who fans particularly in the US [TS]

00:31:09   where there are there really is much [TS]

00:31:12   less of a barrier between the [TS]

00:31:14   professionals and the fans are I like [TS]

00:31:17   mad as a podcaster I've gotten the [TS]

00:31:19   interview several of the several of the [TS]

00:31:21   actors and writers and producers and i [TS]

00:31:23   actually got kissed on the cheek by a [TS]

00:31:25   lizard at the last convention need [TS]

00:31:27   mcintosh Madame vastra she's lovely [TS]

00:31:30   sorry I'm I'm thinking about something [TS]

00:31:33   else right now obviously didn't even [TS]

00:31:35   want to I said hi the young Amy Pond [TS]

00:31:37   yeah but no it in America it's it's a [TS]

00:31:41   it's an intimate fandom which belies the [TS]

00:31:44   fact that it's it's blowing up in [TS]

00:31:46   merchandise in hot topic and all that [TS]

00:31:48   other stuff [TS]

00:31:49   oh come on the doctor who booth two [TS]

00:31:51   years ago the doctor who the con three [TS]

00:31:53   years ago the BBC america booth at [TS]

00:31:55   comic-con was busy but manageable i [TS]

00:32:00   bought an orange Dalek this year at [TS]

00:32:04   comic-con you could not get within a [TS]

00:32:08   stone's throw of the BBC america booth [TS]

00:32:10   interest because the doctor and the [TS]

00:32:11   doctor merchandise line was insane and [TS]

00:32:15   you know they had gone from hat before [TS]

00:32:17   having like tried really hard to gin up [TS]

00:32:19   enthusiasm for it had like different [TS]

00:32:21   props in different places and you could [TS]

00:32:23   take pictures of them in text them and [TS]

00:32:24   win prizes and stuff and that they don't [TS]

00:32:27   didn't bother with that this year [TS]

00:32:28   they're like yeah where you know it was [TS]

00:32:30   it was totally insane [TS]

00:32:32   plus the costumes at comic-con like the [TS]

00:32:34   number of Doctor Who costumes I mean it [TS]

00:32:36   was very clearly like taking over media [TS]

00:32:39   this media convention it was like a [TS]

00:32:42   recognizable piece as opposed to being [TS]

00:32:44   sort of like this odd thing off on the [TS]

00:32:46   side that's obscure and culty same thing [TS]

00:32:49   at dragoncon dragoncon here dragon [TS]

00:32:51   dragon con this is a funny thing is I [TS]

00:32:52   feel like i'ma huge sci-fi not and I've [TS]

00:32:56   never gone to these things it's not out [TS]

00:32:58   of fear or dislike or concern like [TS]

00:33:00   comic-con dragoncon all these things and [TS]

00:33:02   now we're going [TS]

00:33:02   off-topic but the Doctor Who convention [TS]

00:33:04   some more appealing because because the [TS]

00:33:07   Tennessee you talk about it like I [TS]

00:33:08   followed this stuff I really its there's [TS]

00:33:11   something about you know what do you [TS]

00:33:13   seek out you seek out some sense about [TS]

00:33:14   its authenticity or connection and I'd [TS]

00:33:16   rather go to a place where I feel like [TS]

00:33:17   I'm part of a smaller crowd than I huge [TS]

00:33:20   overwhelming one there is more intimacy [TS]

00:33:22   and authenticity had a Doctor Who [TS]

00:33:24   convention i find i can't agree more and [TS]

00:33:26   actually these this year a lot of the [TS]

00:33:28   Doctor Who conventions with the huge [TS]

00:33:29   popularity are are smartly capping their [TS]

00:33:32   registration and making sure that they [TS]

00:33:34   keep it sort of intimate and I think [TS]

00:33:36   that's a good thing I i did see more [TS]

00:33:38   doctor who costumes at dragoncon than i [TS]

00:33:40   did probably anything else I mean even [TS]

00:33:42   if some reason more than Star Wars which [TS]

00:33:44   is its kind of strange different from [TS]

00:33:46   the last time i had gone which was with [TS]

00:33:47   two years previous [TS]

00:33:48   but I i did go to the Doctor Who [TS]

00:33:50   programming at dragoncon and I really it [TS]

00:33:54   made me appreciate the Doctor Who [TS]

00:33:56   specific conventions a lot let's just [TS]

00:33:58   say that [TS]

00:33:58   yeah and I think there are a couple of [TS]

00:34:01   reasons [TS]

00:34:01   Jason for uh what does that sort of [TS]

00:34:04   tracking that you saw of the ink the [TS]

00:34:06   increase crowds at the BBC america booth [TS]

00:34:09   and the explosion of fandom in the US [TS]

00:34:12   for one thing it was a slow burn [TS]

00:34:14   we were getting the episode slower you [TS]

00:34:16   know it was almost it was an instant [TS]

00:34:18   phenomenon in the UK when the show came [TS]

00:34:19   back in 2005 but it was as you said it [TS]

00:34:22   took a little while for the show to come [TS]

00:34:23   back in the US and the sci-fi channel [TS]

00:34:25   and I get all did not take care of the [TS]

00:34:29   show very well they aired at random [TS]

00:34:32   periods they aired it late and all that [TS]

00:34:34   stuff but it was still slowly building [TS]

00:34:37   and about the time that david tennant is [TS]

00:34:40   about to leave the series on BBC America [TS]

00:34:44   gets the show [TS]

00:34:45   yeah and BBC america has a smaller [TS]

00:34:47   audience the sci-fi channel but they [TS]

00:34:49   take much better care of the show and [TS]

00:34:51   then immediately you have a new doctor [TS]

00:34:54   matt smith you having essentially a soft [TS]

00:34:57   reboot of the series it's just going off [TS]

00:34:59   in a different direction is a perfect [TS]

00:35:01   jumping on point and that's when [TS]

00:35:03   American fandom just really latched on [TS]

00:35:06   and not even just American phantom all [TS]

00:35:08   of North America at this point in Canada [TS]

00:35:11   Doctor Who airs on the space channel and [TS]

00:35:13   the space channel when Doctor Who airs [TS]

00:35:16   actually beating their network [TS]

00:35:17   programming as far as rating goes [TS]

00:35:19   sometimes fast it's amazing to because [TS]

00:35:22   as somebody who's has seen dr. through [TS]

00:35:24   the years I I don't have a knock-knock [TS]

00:35:26   joke or a or a lightbulb joke for this [TS]

00:35:28   one but I'm gonna just it sounds like [TS]

00:35:30   there's there's one here somewhere we'll [TS]

00:35:32   work it out [TS]

00:35:33   dr. was always gonna be big in America [TS]

00:35:35   and it and it was always I mean in the [TS]

00:35:38   eighties you could argue that the show [TS]

00:35:40   itself was the producers of the show [TS]

00:35:42   actually started to like try to get into [TS]

00:35:48   the what will work with fandom what will [TS]

00:35:50   make us break through in America there's [TS]

00:35:52   some interest in the show in America and [TS]

00:35:55   it i would argue it maybe it probably [TS]

00:35:57   made the show worse and not better you [TS]

00:36:00   know the John nathan-turner kind of [TS]

00:36:01   catering to the fandom and and [TS]

00:36:02   disappearing up its own backside a [TS]

00:36:05   little bit but but you know it always [TS]

00:36:07   seemed like this it was never gonna [TS]

00:36:08   happen right i mean that's what i can do [TS]

00:36:10   is like it's great we can talk about [TS]

00:36:11   Doctor Who being this close to breaking [TS]

00:36:13   through in America and was never gonna [TS]

00:36:14   happen and then all the sudden happened [TS]

00:36:16   and you're right chip it was BBC america [TS]

00:36:19   which needed to establish an identity [TS]

00:36:21   for itself and was going to be able to [TS]

00:36:24   use Doctor Who as a battering ram to to [TS]

00:36:27   get established in a way that sci-fi [TS]

00:36:28   channel had no need sci-fi channel it [TS]

00:36:30   was like leftovers from somebody else [TS]

00:36:33   and i will buy it'll be cheap will put [TS]

00:36:35   it on and and BBC america marketed it [TS]

00:36:39   and used it as part of its identity and [TS]

00:36:41   you look at BBC I i made this comment on [TS]

00:36:43   Twitter the other week I feel like the [TS]

00:36:45   BBC america in some ways is the real [TS]

00:36:47   sci-fi channel now because you look at [TS]

00:36:48   some of them the the shows that they've [TS]

00:36:50   got on and they're certainly running [TS]

00:36:52   next gen and battlestar know that that's [TS]

00:36:54   that's true too but something like [TS]

00:36:55   orphan black [TS]

00:36:56   you know if that's a size is a sci-fi [TS]

00:36:59   series essentially but it's a BBC [TS]

00:37:00   america original essentially so that [TS]

00:37:04   that it turns out that's what did it is [TS]

00:37:05   the the BBC america wanting to establish [TS]

00:37:09   an identity and having this new show [TS]

00:37:10   that was at the perfect moment with matt [TS]

00:37:13   smith taking over to reintroduce it to [TS]

00:37:15   people and and there had been that [TS]

00:37:17   bubbling beneath the surface where [TS]

00:37:19   people had discussed discovered it on [TS]

00:37:20   syfy and liked it and then it was ready [TS]

00:37:23   was primed for that moment where it [TS]

00:37:25   we're just sort of took off so you know [TS]

00:37:27   I i was going to say that the [TS]

00:37:29   when the new show came back I mean I [TS]

00:37:31   definitely when I was spreading the word [TS]

00:37:33   far and wide one of the things that I [TS]

00:37:34   noticed is that that uh so sci-fi fan [TS]

00:37:40   demo in a lot of cases is a very [TS]

00:37:41   male-dominated thing i would i would say [TS]

00:37:45   historically one of the things that i [TS]

00:37:47   really enjoyed about the new doctor who [TS]

00:37:48   is that i was able to share that with my [TS]

00:37:50   friends who are women who really loved [TS]

00:37:52   certain kinds of sci-fi shows Buffy [TS]

00:37:55   being example all of the women I know [TS]

00:37:57   who who bonded with me over buffy the [TS]

00:37:59   vampire slayer I said you gotta watch [TS]

00:38:01   this and they totally got it and I was [TS]

00:38:03   so excited because when i was 14 I [TS]

00:38:06   recall there being very few women around [TS]

00:38:08   the Doctor Who conventions and then this [TS]

00:38:10   new doctor was like no no this is this [TS]

00:38:11   is a broad appeal this is a show for [TS]

00:38:13   kids and grownups for men and women and [TS]

00:38:17   that was really exciting and so I felt [TS]

00:38:18   like that it was close but it took that [TS]

00:38:21   it took that moment and and the mat [TS]

00:38:23   smith arrival I guess was that moment [TS]

00:38:25   and and here we are hot topic hot topic [TS]

00:38:28   yeah yeah unbelievable should we talk [TS]

00:38:31   about doctors since this is one of the [TS]

00:38:33   amazing things about the show is that it [TS]

00:38:35   is managed why it other shows can't last [TS]

00:38:37   because everybody gets old or they want [TS]

00:38:39   a lot of money in their contract and the [TS]

00:38:41   show's end unless it's the simpsons [TS]

00:38:43   let's animated and then they can replace [TS]

00:38:45   the actors voices with computers after a [TS]

00:38:48   while is probably what's gonna happen [TS]

00:38:50   there [TS]

00:38:50   I'm here you know hero Robo Homer well [TS]

00:38:53   they will have set every word in the [TS]

00:38:54   English language it somehow i am just [TS]

00:38:56   lon Flanders that's right haha but uh [TS]

00:38:59   but doctor who works by regenerating [TS]

00:39:02   itself not just in the main actors but [TS]

00:39:03   also in the in the producers and it and [TS]

00:39:07   in the format on a chip you've talked [TS]

00:39:09   about that onto a Time Lord a lot of one [TS]

00:39:11   of the beauties of the show is that it [TS]

00:39:12   read imagines itself in in lots of [TS]

00:39:16   different ways sometimes a week to week [TS]

00:39:17   and certainly from from era to era and [TS]

00:39:20   and you know we offer mark that time [TS]

00:39:23   based on the lead actors but but there [TS]

00:39:25   are lots of other ways where the show is [TS]

00:39:26   managed to adapt because quite honestly [TS]

00:39:27   if you look at the first episode from [TS]

00:39:29   1963 you couldn't really do that show [TS]

00:39:31   today it has to have changed a lot in [TS]

00:39:33   the intervening 50 years thats that's [TS]

00:39:35   right there's an academic and Britain [TS]

00:39:37   named matt hills who is described the [TS]

00:39:40   TARDIS is not a time machine but as on [TS]

00:39:42   Roisin [TS]

00:39:43   oh yeah yeah and and that's true because [TS]

00:39:46   you go over 50 years of Doctor Who and [TS]

00:39:49   not not only has the lead actor change [TS]

00:39:51   but the style of storytelling has [TS]

00:39:53   changed dramatically you've had [TS]

00:39:55   espionage thrillers you've had based on [TS]

00:39:59   that basis under siege with creeping [TS]

00:40:01   crawling slumbering monsters you've had [TS]

00:40:04   humor you've had romance James Bond spy [TS]

00:40:08   sort of yeah that the show seems to [TS]

00:40:11   reinvent itself uh to fit the to fit the [TS]

00:40:15   context of the of the times that is [TS]

00:40:18   being made in 2005 doctor who is [TS]

00:40:21   different from 2013 doctor who's really [TS]

00:40:23   different from 1963 and the actors [TS]

00:40:26   change to and that's the that's the [TS]

00:40:28   genius of the show it the most important [TS]

00:40:32   doctor in the show's history is patrick [TS]

00:40:35   troughton who was the second doctor [TS]

00:40:36   because he was the he was the [TS]

00:40:38   regenerator he was the first regenerated [TS]

00:40:40   lead actor and if audiences hadn't [TS]

00:40:44   bought it then the show would have died [TS]

00:40:46   for that was that Dad fateful moment of [TS]

00:40:49   saying we're going to do this show and [TS]

00:40:50   it's going to be different but it's [TS]

00:40:51   still going to be this show and and that [TS]

00:40:55   was the that was yet the defining moment [TS]

00:40:58   in some ways was not starting it but [TS]

00:41:00   continuing it and it really was like [TS]

00:41:02   classic necessity is the mother and [TS]

00:41:05   dimension type of knowing where they [TS]

00:41:07   really kind of needed William Hartnell [TS]

00:41:09   to to get out for multiple reasons and [TS]

00:41:12   decided okay we're going to try this and [TS]

00:41:14   see how it works and damn if it didn't [TS]

00:41:17   it's a sci-fi show we can do it I've [TS]

00:41:19   watched all the regeneration sequences [TS]

00:41:20   because those are available in different [TS]

00:41:22   ways so that I am familiar with that I [TS]

00:41:23   think there's actually of all of them i [TS]

00:41:26   think the david tennant's entrance and [TS]

00:41:28   exit are two of the defining moments and [TS]

00:41:31   how they dealt with that I don't know a [TS]

00:41:34   great way like the way he appeared i [TS]

00:41:37   think i should say i actually get sushi [TS]

00:41:38   Eccleston's x-rays that I'm going to be [TS]

00:41:40   gone i'm not going to be the same [TS]

00:41:41   I thought in the new series they really [TS]

00:41:45   adjust the fact that it's not the same [TS]

00:41:46   guy that this is a cheat that this isn't [TS]

00:41:49   it it's more emotionally resident [TS]

00:41:52   the way they played it it that [TS]

00:41:54   Jacqueline's like I'm gonna be going to [TS]

00:41:56   be somebody else than 10 shows up and [TS]

00:41:57   kind of go yeah everything's great but [TS]

00:41:59   it's a different person then returned it [TS]

00:42:01   left and his who his doctor you know [TS]

00:42:04   went out i watch that scene so many [TS]

00:42:06   times I don't worry says I don't want to [TS]

00:42:08   go and in their alternates that where he [TS]

00:42:10   record they filmed a few different ways [TS]

00:42:12   that some of the most moving stuff in [TS]

00:42:15   the entire show it comes to the heart of [TS]

00:42:18   like what is life about what is this [TS]

00:42:21   existence how the Time Lords they really [TS]

00:42:23   haven't won anything you know they act [TS]

00:42:25   as if they have but they haven't and i [TS]

00:42:27   don't know i think that's something that [TS]

00:42:29   they developed a lot more later [TS]

00:42:31   I mean they've played around with the [TS]

00:42:32   more to regeneration energy and all the [TS]

00:42:34   rest of the two in the in the last two [TS]

00:42:35   years the modern series if you if [TS]

00:42:37   anything to find the modern series it's [TS]

00:42:39   a examining the the accepted principles [TS]

00:42:44   of Doctor Who in a way like how would [TS]

00:42:45   people respond to these which the old [TS]

00:42:48   series it was like alright it happened [TS]

00:42:50   it's didn't move on yeah and I think [TS]

00:42:52   that's definitely a big difference [TS]

00:42:53   between the classic series in the new [TS]

00:42:55   series in the classic series they were [TS]

00:42:56   pretty careful most of the time to be [TS]

00:42:58   explicitly saying I'm just I'm the same [TS]

00:43:01   person [TS]

00:43:01   it's just it's a different body and I'm [TS]

00:43:02   a little bit different in the new series [TS]

00:43:04   they take in a different direction and [TS]

00:43:05   Glenn you liked it i personally despise [TS]

00:43:08   it but you which way what did you know [TS]

00:43:11   what let's get into it so which cannot [TS]

00:43:13   like the resistance you felt like there [TS]

00:43:15   was too much I mean there's an ego thing [TS]

00:43:16   like the new man walks away right [TS]

00:43:19   yeah you didn't really have I mean his [TS]

00:43:21   doctor was full of ego at the end he was [TS]

00:43:23   struggling the doctors send in all that [TS]

00:43:25   stuff I really that and that's what the [TS]

00:43:27   thing that I didn't like because I adore [TS]

00:43:28   david tennant as a doctor he at the time [TS]

00:43:31   almost a planted Tom Baker as my [TS]

00:43:33   favorite and to see him go out that way [TS]

00:43:36   is as a he became whiny and I just [TS]

00:43:40   didn't like that I felt like it was [TS]

00:43:42   taking this this character i had put on [TS]

00:43:44   a really high pedestal and I mean it was [TS]

00:43:46   just like rtd just like took his little [TS]

00:43:48   finger and book tipped him off that [TS]

00:43:49   pedestal and he crashed hard for I'm [TS]

00:43:51   gonna get very personal here and say ma [TS]

00:43:53   I saw my grandfather grew up [TS]

00:43:55   away and I'm so it's very personal but [TS]

00:43:58   it's true is that I saw this man had [TS]

00:44:00   been incredibly strong as whole life [TS]

00:44:01   really fall apart at the end and it [TS]

00:44:04   maybe that's why i resonate with me more [TS]

00:44:05   is it was exactly real to me in that [TS]

00:44:08   sense that you get that point and even [TS]

00:44:10   without you strip away the science [TS]

00:44:11   fiction is like he did not want to go [TS]

00:44:13   he was not ready to go in ten showed [TS]

00:44:16   that doctor showed that and then it's [TS]

00:44:18   all hey it's matt smith could Geronimo [TS]

00:44:21   hood [TS]

00:44:21   wow that's that's a really to take it i [TS]

00:44:24   guess i guess you do point out that [TS]

00:44:25   david tennant was by far the most sort [TS]

00:44:27   of human of all of the doctors yeah and [TS]

00:44:29   I guess what it comes down to it i [TS]

00:44:30   prefer doctor who is not that human I i [TS]

00:44:33   like the ones that are more alien so I [TS]

00:44:35   think that they humanize them too much [TS]

00:44:37   at the end for me it took it a little [TS]

00:44:38   too far [TS]

00:44:39   yeah Glenn Glenn and Erica are [TS]

00:44:40   demonstrating the that the Rorschach [TS]

00:44:44   test nature TV show because it has a [TS]

00:44:48   show does change so much and you are the [TS]

00:44:51   the different actors play the doctor in [TS]

00:44:54   such a different way and the different [TS]

00:44:55   styles of storytelling up more bitter [TS]

00:44:59   battles have been fought in Doctor Who [TS]

00:45:02   fandom then arm then on the ancient [TS]

00:45:06   ancient fields of on the end ancient [TS]

00:45:09   medieval fields over what doctor who is [TS]

00:45:13   and who the right kind of doctor is and [TS]

00:45:15   all that stuff how sentimental you want [TS]

00:45:18   your storytelling and classic doctor who [TS]

00:45:21   was rarely sentimental modern aqua who [TS]

00:45:24   is extremely sentimental I I side more [TS]

00:45:29   with Glenn as far as enjoying seeing the [TS]

00:45:33   tenth doctor you know with his with his [TS]

00:45:36   frailties and his excessive attachment [TS]

00:45:40   to the life that he was living and not [TS]

00:45:41   wanting to what not going to give that [TS]

00:45:43   up [TS]

00:45:44   whereas somebody who's used to seeing [TS]

00:45:48   this for 450 years worth and accustomed [TS]

00:45:52   to the changes and who wants to see [TS]

00:45:55   their doctor to be a little above these [TS]

00:45:58   human frailties will have the reaction [TS]

00:46:00   that Erica had and then thats that's one [TS]

00:46:03   of the things that makes doctor who is [TS]

00:46:04   so delicious that you can do that if you [TS]

00:46:08   don't like what [TS]

00:46:08   going on in a few just waiting to be [TS]

00:46:10   totally different just wait a minute and [TS]

00:46:12   it'll be different we have one more [TS]

00:46:14   sponsor for this episode but guess what [TS]

00:46:16   it's a very special sponsor in that he [TS]

00:46:19   is on this episode Glenn fleischmann how [TS]

00:46:23   is it you are the sponsor and welcome [TS]

00:46:26   it's very nice to have you as a sponsor [TS]

00:46:28   it's very kind of you yes IIM the [TS]

00:46:30   sponsor in that many people on this [TS]

00:46:33   podcast to participate as regular [TS]

00:46:35   panelists including yourself will in [TS]

00:46:37   fact benefit from the thing we're going [TS]

00:46:39   to talk about intriguing [TS]

00:46:42   ok stay tuned after the podcast is over [TS]

00:46:44   to hear a little bit more about Glenn's [TS]

00:46:46   new Kickstarter for the magazine and if [TS]

00:46:48   you want more information and support [TS]

00:46:49   the magazine's Kickstarter which [TS]

00:46:51   includes seven stories by people who are [TS]

00:46:54   regularly on the incomparable go to the [TS]

00:46:56   dash magazine dot org slash book and [TS]

00:47:01   stay tuned at the end for a little bit [TS]

00:47:02   more from Glen so this is this is the [TS]

00:47:04   the trap with this character is that [TS]

00:47:07   you're saying goodbye to the actor and [TS]

00:47:09   you can you can play it completely [TS]

00:47:11   straight and say well he's just gonna [TS]

00:47:12   turn to another person he shouldn't [TS]

00:47:14   bother him that much and and then the [TS]

00:47:17   modern show there's there's been more of [TS]

00:47:18   this story of sort of like well let's [TS]

00:47:21   play it like a death because that way [TS]

00:47:25   you get the drama of somebody [TS]

00:47:28   considering the end of their lives in a [TS]

00:47:29   way that I don't know I felt some of [TS]

00:47:33   that in the like the caves of Androzani [TS]

00:47:35   which is the last episode of peter [TS]

00:47:37   davison run where where he ki sacrifices [TS]

00:47:41   himself and in fact says I might [TS]

00:47:45   regenerate I don't know and and says is [TS]

00:47:48   this def he he is thinking he might not [TS]

00:47:51   make it and and and that's interesting [TS]

00:47:54   because then then you can play it and [TS]

00:47:57   say this is this is somebody dealing [TS]

00:47:59   with mortality even though they're [TS]

00:48:00   actually kind of almost immortal but [TS]

00:48:03   that it's just a you could you can play [TS]

00:48:05   either way and I totally see both sides [TS]

00:48:06   i can enjoy david tennant saying another [TS]

00:48:10   man walks away i don't want to go and I [TS]

00:48:12   do and I've seen that seen a million [TS]

00:48:14   times because when I went to the doctor [TS]

00:48:15   who experience in London it plays on a [TS]

00:48:18   loop as you're walking through [TS]

00:48:20   for years that sounds like a perfect [TS]

00:48:22   vision of hell I don't want to go over [TS]

00:48:24   and over and over and over [TS]

00:48:26   oh please don't do they do it all the [TS]

00:48:27   different versions i don't know it's [TS]

00:48:29   just like the one that aired and it's a [TS]

00:48:31   two minute loop and it goes on with the [TS]

00:48:33   music and everything the whole time and [TS]

00:48:34   it's it's I it's burned on my brain now [TS]

00:48:37   but the point is the point is I can [TS]

00:48:39   enjoy that but at the same time have [TS]

00:48:40   some hesitancy in the idea that will you [TS]

00:48:42   be but you're not really going you're [TS]

00:48:46   not really dying you're just changing [TS]

00:48:47   and it you know and that's the dichotomy [TS]

00:48:50   of a of the show is that I mean in [TS]

00:48:52   reality it's a different actor I mean [TS]

00:48:54   we're coming into the 50th anniversary [TS]

00:48:56   and we're going to see multiple doctors [TS]

00:48:58   interacting with each other and that [TS]

00:49:00   that happens because they're different [TS]

00:49:01   actors I keep waiting for the episode [TS]

00:49:03   that's called the 10 doctors were it's [TS]

00:49:05   literally the same actor ten-time yeah [TS]

00:49:08   that would be genius yeah it could be [TS]

00:49:10   him with the same face it doesn't have [TS]

00:49:12   to be it just makes it easier to have [TS]

00:49:14   different actors playing the character [TS]

00:49:15   you can have them all be the same one [TS]

00:49:17   and it would still theoretically work [TS]

00:49:20   it's just it's a cheap and it's fun but [TS]

00:49:23   you know we all know that the reality is [TS]

00:49:25   that it's just the the doctors contract [TS]

00:49:28   is up and he wants to go do something [TS]

00:49:29   else or he's been fired and they put a [TS]

00:49:31   wig on the new guy just shrugged i guess [TS]

00:49:35   he's gone and and then and then we'll [TS]

00:49:37   move on shall we talk [TS]

00:49:38   should we talk about specific doctors [TS]

00:49:41   for for a minute i wanted to do that I [TS]

00:49:43   am I was on a podcast a little while ago [TS]

00:49:45   that was the madman with a box podcast [TS]

00:49:49   which was really enjoyable and he asked [TS]

00:49:51   me what my favorite doctor was and I [TS]

00:49:53   said I tried very hard not to say Colin [TS]

00:49:56   Baker because that's a terrible terrible [TS]

00:49:58   choice and yet as a child of the [TS]

00:50:01   eighties he was the doctor when i was at [TS]

00:50:04   at at my peak of being a fan those [TS]

00:50:07   episodes were airing and I really wanted [TS]

00:50:09   to see them and I have a great in an [TS]

00:50:11   abiding love for vengeance on varos [TS]

00:50:13   because like it's basically the Doctor [TS]

00:50:15   Who version of Max Headroom and Max [TS]

00:50:16   Headroom is one of my favorite shows of [TS]

00:50:17   all time because it's about television [TS]

00:50:19   and media commentary and things like [TS]

00:50:21   that but it's it's you know it's not a [TS]

00:50:24   good choice and yet in some ways he's my [TS]

00:50:26   favorite and otherwise i guess i would [TS]

00:50:28   say David Tennant but i'm i'm there are [TS]

00:50:31   so many to choose from i was listening [TS]

00:50:32   to to Erica do your part [TS]

00:50:34   cast Verity and the amount of love for [TS]

00:50:36   Patrick Troughton I feel like is at an [TS]

00:50:38   all-time high now with the discovery of [TS]

00:50:40   those two new stories that they found in [TS]

00:50:42   a in a in a way station somewhere in [TS]

00:50:44   Africa and have enough restored that [TS]

00:50:47   that everybody seems to have come back [TS]

00:50:48   to patrick troughton as being defended [TS]

00:50:51   I've seen maybe three [TS]

00:50:53   Patrick Chan stories and he's great he's [TS]

00:50:55   great but I feel like I mean half of his [TS]

00:50:57   almost half of his run now not over half [TS]

00:50:59   its now almost half is lost to history [TS]

00:51:02   so it's hard to say so I don't know [TS]

00:51:04   whether you know you I was assuming [TS]

00:51:07   everybody who is allowed on Verity has [TS]

00:51:08   to say the second doctor is their [TS]

00:51:10   favorite but you suggested it's probably [TS]

00:51:12   Tom Baker is that right yeah actually [TS]

00:51:14   lives i think is the only one that says [TS]

00:51:16   the transducer absolutely she is well [TS]

00:51:18   okay she does she was shot she shouted [TS]

00:51:21   know she's very enthusiastic about [TS]

00:51:23   Patrick Troughton yeah i mean Tom Baker [TS]

00:51:27   is my doctor he's the one that I grew up [TS]

00:51:29   watching as I said for a little while [TS]

00:51:31   david tennant almost surpassed that but [TS]

00:51:33   then see I can never truly judge a [TS]

00:51:35   doctor until they're not on the air and [TS]

00:51:36   you know because my favorite doctor is [TS]

00:51:38   usually whoever i'm watching sure [TS]

00:51:40   so in the wilderness years it was Tom [TS]

00:51:42   Baker with my favorite peter davison was [TS]

00:51:43   my second favorite because once I knew [TS]

00:51:45   the best at this point [TS]

00:51:47   Pat Smith is really up there although i [TS]

00:51:49   think the longer he goes on the more [TS]

00:51:51   Matt Smith we see it mixed in with the [TS]

00:51:53   doctor and that that bothers me a little [TS]

00:51:56   bit so you don't have much longer to [TS]

00:51:58   wait those oh my god again so right now [TS]

00:52:01   honestly I think my favorite doctors [TS]

00:52:02   Peter Capaldi yes perfect i love him [TS]

00:52:07   everything [TS]

00:52:08   yeah he's such a terrific actor it's [TS]

00:52:09   gonna be it's also i'm glad they went [TS]

00:52:11   older like you know they're getting [TS]

00:52:12   younger and younger and you're like baby [TS]

00:52:14   dr. Marcus babies is because it's gonna [TS]

00:52:17   happen oh yeah the thing that excites me [TS]

00:52:19   about Peter Capaldi is he said [TS]

00:52:21   established enough actor and he's played [TS]

00:52:24   so many roles we have absolutely no idea [TS]

00:52:26   what kind of doctor he's going to play [TS]

00:52:28   whereas most of the doctors have to a [TS]

00:52:31   certain extent played themselves are you [TS]

00:52:34   you can see you can see David Tennant [TS]

00:52:36   under the Tenth Doctor you can see Matt [TS]

00:52:39   Smith under the 11th doctor and all that [TS]

00:52:41   Peter Capaldi I I think he's wide open i [TS]

00:52:43   think i I'm I'm going to be completely [TS]

00:52:45   surprised to see what we [TS]

00:52:47   comes up with Capaldi aside chip do you [TS]

00:52:49   have a favorite [TS]

00:52:50   I you know it in terms of the actors i [TS]

00:52:54   don't think a single doctor is a bad [TS]

00:52:56   doctor arm I I like them all the the [TS]

00:53:00   stories that were told during their [TS]

00:53:02   years that I know that story poem again [TS]

00:53:05   if you listen to those big finish audio [TS]

00:53:06   is he's so great but his show was not [TS]

00:53:10   that great but he's a great yea after in [TS]

00:53:12   those stories he's a great doctor but [TS]

00:53:14   only if you close your eyes but David [TS]

00:53:17   David David Tennant is totally my doctor [TS]

00:53:19   note but I say that I always have to [TS]

00:53:23   disclaim because matt smith's is is a [TS]

00:53:25   genius [TS]

00:53:26   he is a he i think he has a more he's [TS]

00:53:30   made more creative choices in the role [TS]

00:53:32   but there's something about the [TS]

00:53:34   familiarity and the human miss of David [TS]

00:53:37   Tennant and arm and peter davison that [TS]

00:53:42   really appeals to me there are some [TS]

00:53:43   doctor who think fans who want to note [TS]

00:53:46   who want to feel like they know the [TS]

00:53:47   doctor and there are some who I guess I [TS]

00:53:52   want to feel more awed by the doctor but [TS]

00:53:55   I am I tend to prefer the actors who [TS]

00:53:58   seemed more accessible in the world and [TS]

00:54:00   actually Jason I'll back you up i really [TS]

00:54:02   like Colin Baker a lot the stories did [TS]

00:54:04   him Little service but his costume [TS]

00:54:06   didn't really work even anything else my [TS]

00:54:08   bad [TS]

00:54:09   the hehe he is against type in in in the [TS]

00:54:13   sense that he is brash and he is out [TS]

00:54:16   there he is a force of nature as opposed [TS]

00:54:18   to patrick troughton just sort of [TS]

00:54:20   suddenly hiding in the shadows and [TS]

00:54:24   making everybody underestimate him but [TS]

00:54:26   Colin Baker has a sense of authority [TS]

00:54:28   around him that I really really like and [TS]

00:54:31   speaking of Big Finish he's been [TS]

00:54:35   redeemed if you live to see it finished [TS]

00:54:36   audios his his stories are among some [TS]

00:54:39   are among the best he's a really good [TS]

00:54:42   actor I actually feel in some ways he he [TS]

00:54:44   was you could you even almost get say [TS]

00:54:47   that he was cast to young because he is [TS]

00:54:50   he's a really good actor and I think he [TS]

00:54:53   got it was the wrong time and the wrong [TS]

00:54:55   show and the wrong decisions being made [TS]

00:54:57   by the by the people who produce the [TS]

00:54:59   show and it'sit's tube and then he had [TS]

00:55:01   get the axe because the show was going [TS]

00:55:03   down the drain and they were trying to [TS]

00:55:04   anything they could to keep it to keep [TS]

00:55:06   it alive a shame when do you have a [TS]

00:55:08   favorite i do I don't know if this will [TS]

00:55:10   be an unpopular choice but it's [TS]

00:55:12   influenced by so Tom Baker was my Tom [TS]

00:55:15   Baker was my first dr. so and announce [TS]

00:55:18   doctor for a long time so I always liked [TS]

00:55:21   his performance I've seen in other [TS]

00:55:22   things and he's just there's something [TS]

00:55:24   about the actor i really like I just [TS]

00:55:26   he's enthusiastic and bizarre [TS]

00:55:29   yes and it's terrific and so I always [TS]

00:55:31   try always view the doctor through the [TS]

00:55:33   eyes of of Tom Baker of that [TS]

00:55:36   interpretation and I so Christopher [TS]

00:55:38   Eccleston's i have to say is probably my [TS]

00:55:40   favorite doctor even though i don't [TS]

00:55:42   think he had the greatest scripts i [TS]

00:55:44   think they were ok I think they still [TS]

00:55:45   did a lot of building and there was some [TS]

00:55:46   pretty there were some quite good [TS]

00:55:48   episodes in his short run but there was [TS]

00:55:52   something about the way so Tom Baker [TS]

00:55:54   could smile so broadly that you thought [TS]

00:55:56   his head was going to split into you and [TS]

00:55:58   I thought eccleston captured the sort of [TS]

00:56:00   manic have got nothing to lose kind of [TS]

00:56:03   thing that I think there's a core across [TS]

00:56:06   the show that I've always thought I've [TS]

00:56:09   talked about how like I like the doctor [TS]

00:56:10   because a doctor runs in the danger not [TS]

00:56:12   heedlessly necessarily but not not [TS]

00:56:15   necessarily safely like he's always on [TS]

00:56:17   the verge of perhaps he's going to die [TS]

00:56:19   and he doesn't exactly care because he [TS]

00:56:21   knows he's doing the right thing maybe [TS]

00:56:22   that's part of why it was rough to take [TS]

00:56:24   some of the tenants stuff at the end [TS]

00:56:26   because he resisted and the doctor never [TS]

00:56:28   resist he always just runs into it and [TS]

00:56:30   then he sort of succumbed and I just [TS]

00:56:32   like Eccleston's sort of glee with which [TS]

00:56:35   he launched himself into things even [TS]

00:56:38   though he was this rough sort and he had [TS]

00:56:39   this rough accent a rough face all that [TS]

00:56:41   kind of stuff is this rough character i [TS]

00:56:44   just i don't know i like the vibe and I [TS]

00:56:46   liked his anger sometimes and I am but [TS]

00:56:50   the scripts i would say you know I've [TS]

00:56:52   gone back and watched some of those and [TS]

00:56:53   someone that was I think starting at the [TS]

00:56:55   beginning and tweeting about it going [TS]

00:56:57   like 26 get better just cheesy doesn't [TS]

00:56:59   get better like it does but there you [TS]

00:57:02   have to see those in the developing [TS]

00:57:03   character and Rose become so much better [TS]

00:57:06   and she starts sort of weak and weird [TS]

00:57:08   but she becomes a strong character more [TS]

00:57:09   important and then you just have to get [TS]

00:57:11   past the farting ale you do thats that's [TS]

00:57:13   why I'm [TS]

00:57:14   I don't I don't start people that rose [TS]

00:57:16   anymore i actually encourage people to [TS]

00:57:18   start with the eleventh hour catch up to [TS]

00:57:20   real-time and then jump back to Rose [TS]

00:57:21   because by then they should probably be [TS]

00:57:23   emotionally invested enough to sit [TS]

00:57:25   through the farting aliens yeah I i have [TS]

00:57:27   this is my pet theory about the doctors [TS]

00:57:29   which is which is that sometimes I i [TS]

00:57:32   like to draw kind of connections between [TS]

00:57:34   them so like it like I I sort of feel [TS]

00:57:36   that Tom Baker plan actually Tom Baker [TS]

00:57:38   and and christopher eccleston in some [TS]

00:57:40   ways are similar to me in that they may [TS]

00:57:43   feel like aliens in a in a really strong [TS]

00:57:47   way like this guy is playing on a whole [TS]

00:57:48   different level [TS]

00:57:50   he's not the white really odds not quite [TS]

00:57:52   human whereas david tennant I draw the [TS]

00:57:54   line I mean it's the obvious line but I [TS]

00:57:56   draw the line to Peter Davison that that [TS]

00:57:58   that they both they both have a similar [TS]

00:57:59   kind of energy and and exuberance and [TS]

00:58:02   and there's that wonderful little [TS]

00:58:04   special short where they meet in the [TS]

00:58:07   TARDIS and and that is now they're [TS]

00:58:08   related another related by marriage they [TS]

00:58:11   are related so far yeah and then and [TS]

00:58:13   then matt smith i mean i guess the [TS]

00:58:15   obvious parallel is to patrick troughton [TS]

00:58:17   because if you look at the patrick [TS]

00:58:18   troughton stuff I i clearly i mean Matt [TS]

00:58:20   Smith said that he watched the patrick [TS]

00:58:22   troughton episodes and there's a [TS]

00:58:23   definite connection there and I i love [TS]

00:58:25   that the show has been on we talk about [TS]

00:58:27   50 years and an 11 lead actors that it's [TS]

00:58:31   been on long enough that the the casting [TS]

00:58:35   the lead characters the era's can echo [TS]

00:58:37   and have these clear kind of echoes of [TS]

00:58:40   it but this is kind of like that in a [TS]

00:58:42   way that it couldn't be when there were [TS]

00:58:44   four I think you're right and my biggest [TS]

00:58:46   fear is that the Peter Cappelli era is [TS]

00:58:48   going to echo the jon pertwee era which [TS]

00:58:52   is my of my least favorite era of Doctor [TS]

00:58:55   Who by a landslide [TS]

00:58:57   what why is that because he was stuck on [TS]

00:58:58   earth and he was James Bond [TS]

00:59:00   Yeah Yeah right yes I don't want I don't [TS]

00:59:03   love those episodes either I i watched i [TS]

00:59:05   watch them but yeah not I look the [TS]

00:59:08   surgery I think we had Sarah Jane was [TS]

00:59:10   wondering Good there are good Pertwee's [TS]

00:59:14   I I remember I remember really liking [TS]

00:59:16   the ambassador's of death I really i [TS]

00:59:18   remember really liking Inferno but they [TS]

00:59:20   were you know i love in for enough when [TS]

00:59:22   ambassadors death is it strikes me was [TS]

00:59:24   not different from [TS]

00:59:26   Oh what is the moon base with the one [TS]

00:59:28   where they where there's the transmat [TS]

00:59:30   that gets and the Ice Warriors are in it [TS]

00:59:31   its presence of death death scenes of [TS]

00:59:35   death at you know I I like those but I [TS]

00:59:37   feel like they're the off format [TS]

00:59:38   episodes they're not the normal ones [TS]

00:59:40   which is like you know which is the [TS]

00:59:41   standard Pertwee episodes which boring [TS]

00:59:43   to me my favorite part 1episode that and [TS]

00:59:45   I haven't seen all of them recently [TS]

00:59:47   enough to remember them but is a [TS]

00:59:48   recursive peloton were there you know [TS]

00:59:50   the doctor and Joe travel off the earth [TS]

00:59:52   so definitely more like definitely more [TS]

00:59:55   like a Tom Baker style episode so well [TS]

00:59:59   inferno it [TS]

00:59:59   inferno it [TS]

01:00:00   this is a parallel universe story in [TS]

01:00:01   which is what makes it so strange and [TS]

01:00:03   the Brigadier as an eye patch and this [TS]

01:00:05   evil Brigadier I don't know that yes the [TS]

01:00:07   brigade leader great leader yet so [TS]

01:00:08   everybody's evil in that parallel planet [TS]

01:00:10   but that's ok against hatch rather than [TS]

01:00:12   the goatee ice exactly and the missing [TS]

01:00:16   mustache palomar yep it's far out there [TS]

01:00:20   like David Lynch yes unfortunately it's [TS]

01:00:22   also what a seven-part cereal harder so [TS]

01:00:26   it goes on forever [TS]

01:00:28   it doesn't feel that long though because [TS]

01:00:29   they had the genius idea to throw in the [TS]

01:00:32   alternate alternate universe in which [TS]

01:00:33   was a late addition to the script that [TS]

01:00:36   it makes it which is what I remember the [TS]

01:00:38   most of course that those PBS saturday [TS]

01:00:40   nights were fascinating because it was [TS]

01:00:42   like you didn't know how long it was [TS]

01:00:44   going to run it was the last thing on [TS]

01:00:46   the channel and so you get like inferno [TS]

01:00:48   and you'd be watching and then two hours [TS]

01:00:50   passenger like when this is gonna end [TS]

01:00:51   because there's no indication of how [TS]

01:00:54   long the show is going to be before your [TS]

01:00:56   tivo & and round-the-clock scheduling [TS]

01:00:58   was literally they would just start to [TS]

01:01:00   press play on Doctor Who and the guy the [TS]

01:01:02   PBS station will go to sleep and it will [TS]

01:01:04   run for who knows how long and that's a [TS]

01:01:07   problem with watching it in the omnibus [TS]

01:01:09   edition because that's not the way that [TS]

01:01:10   it was no seen it was created to be [TS]

01:01:13   episodic and run one week at a time of [TS]

01:01:15   the pacing is all wrong because every 25 [TS]

01:01:17   minutes there's a swelling of music that [TS]

01:01:19   suddenly dies off and a really exciting [TS]

01:01:21   thing that turns out not to be that [TS]

01:01:22   exciting because if you're seeing a [TS]

01:01:24   resolution of a cliffhanger without [TS]

01:01:26   having thought about the cliffhanger [TS]

01:01:28   which is exactly [TS]

01:01:29   yeah that's the biggest difference [TS]

01:01:31   between the classic series and the new [TS]

01:01:33   series classic series was a serial it [TS]

01:01:36   was almost almost almost has a Terrigen [TS]

01:01:40   in the old movie serials where 25 [TS]

01:01:44   minutes of story and then you come back [TS]

01:01:46   next next week [TS]

01:01:48   well whereas the modern series is modern [TS]

01:01:52   television done in 45 minutes [TS]

01:01:55   the episodes complete it's much more [TS]

01:01:57   Pacey the you your you miss the [TS]

01:02:01   opportunity for that big cliffhanger at [TS]

01:02:04   the end [TS]

01:02:05   on the other hand it's much more compact [TS]

01:02:07   and focus storytelling yeah yeah no [TS]

01:02:10   that's exactly it its a-what yet another [TS]

01:02:12   way that the show has reinvented itself [TS]

01:02:15   over the years before we go because [TS]

01:02:18   we've been talking for almost an hour [TS]

01:02:20   but i wanted to say before we go on to [TS]

01:02:22   ask you if you have any particular [TS]

01:02:23   favorite stories that you want to talk [TS]

01:02:27   about because we have 50 years to choose [TS]

01:02:29   from and I know every doctor who fan has [TS]

01:02:32   a has a favorite or i suppose if you [TS]

01:02:35   want to be negative you can talk about [TS]

01:02:36   your least favorite but let's say we [TS]

01:02:37   keep positive and talk about talking [TS]

01:02:39   about favorites um the favor two things [TS]

01:02:41   that have still stuck stuck out for you [TS]

01:02:44   that you would also recommend to other [TS]

01:02:45   people i like Erica's idea of also where [TS]

01:02:47   would you recommend people started 11 [TS]

01:02:49   hours probably a the the right answer [TS]

01:02:51   there i think maybe i would say although [TS]

01:02:54   my kids my kids and I want my whole [TS]

01:02:57   family is now watching from the [TS]

01:02:58   beginning from rose but that's because [TS]

01:03:01   the kids have been we've jumped over so [TS]

01:03:05   many different episodes now that they [TS]

01:03:07   have no sense of of of continuity back [TS]

01:03:09   beyond that Smith and so I I'm and I [TS]

01:03:12   skipped the episodes that aren't as good [TS]

01:03:14   and so now I'm like all right we're [TS]

01:03:16   gonna watch both of those Daleks in [TS]

01:03:17   Manhattan episodes nobody's gonna like [TS]

01:03:19   them but we're going to watch Jason [TS]

01:03:21   Jason if you were a good father you have [TS]

01:03:24   started them with the unearthly child I [TS]

01:03:27   don't have I don't have those on DVD but [TS]

01:03:29   i have the entire new series on DVD [TS]

01:03:30   let me tell you season season three disc [TS]

01:03:34   to who that is i think it was dust on [TS]

01:03:37   that disk i don't think i put that in [TS]

01:03:39   even cause that's that's the two dollars [TS]

01:03:41   in manhattan and then the Lazarus [TS]

01:03:42   experiment and oh and 42 which is not [TS]

01:03:46   bad as much as it is kind of not that [TS]

01:03:48   interesting but that's not a good disc [TS]

01:03:50   and the next disc is human nature and [TS]

01:03:52   blink [TS]

01:03:53   oh what a how there's some variety of [TS]

01:03:57   that anyway anyway good episodes Bad [TS]

01:04:00   episodes where where you should start I [TS]

01:04:03   got one [TS]

01:04:04   alright enough this is Anna it's the [TS]

01:04:06   kind of those things about where if you [TS]

01:04:09   like an episode that enough doctor at [TS]

01:04:10   what are you saying but I like turn left [TS]

01:04:12   quite a bit oh it's it because it's [TS]

01:04:16   telling something in the negative it's [TS]

01:04:19   the absence of any so don't get the [TS]

01:04:22   acting very very little right of david [TS]

01:04:24   tennant that episode I love candy shoes [TS]

01:04:27   and his haha to get there and falling [TS]

01:04:30   off the the car going to the ambulance [TS]

01:04:33   with the but the but I think it's one of [TS]

01:04:36   the it's an interesting episode like a [TS]

01:04:37   lot of episodes are they don't have much [TS]

01:04:39   of the actual doctor in them is it [TS]

01:04:41   defines the show by that the negative [TS]

01:04:43   space by what's not there and I i don't [TS]

01:04:45   know i love Catherine Tate a love well [TS]

01:04:48   Wilfred what's-his-name right said fred [TS]

01:04:51   members named Bernard Cribbins playing [TS]

01:04:52   yes well lots love love him just love so [TS]

01:04:56   much of the acting in the episode and [TS]

01:04:59   just that notion of ok let's put on the [TS]

01:05:02   line here is everything this guy did and [TS]

01:05:05   where for the hearth be you're never [TS]

01:05:07   gonna see it occasionally get to see [TS]

01:05:08   that like with the the whole arc of the [TS]

01:05:10   master and Freeman my brains gone dead [TS]

01:05:15   what's her name Martha from agriculture [TS]

01:05:18   Martha in that whole arc and you gotta [TS]

01:05:20   see kind of what happens if the doctor [TS]

01:05:22   is locked up and and so forth but I [TS]

01:05:24   don't know so turn left i like the [TS]

01:05:26   ending is chillin where it's it was [TS]

01:05:28   silly when he runs out you know and [TS]

01:05:32   everything says bad wolf on it but [TS]

01:05:33   there's that bit where the two of them [TS]

01:05:36   are in the shop and they're he's poking [TS]

01:05:38   at the big dead bug and she says there's [TS]

01:05:42   a girl and she she said what she say to [TS]

01:05:44   you and me she said she said two words [TS]

01:05:46   said Pat wolf and I on it shows us that [TS]

01:05:49   moment that sets in play the whole that [TS]

01:05:52   whole next arc and abundant a lot of [TS]

01:05:54   things that follows so I don't rejoice [TS]

01:05:56   possibly but one of my favorite [TS]

01:05:57   interesting chipped a did up hmm that [TS]

01:06:00   that had seemed to have so many layers [TS]

01:06:03   of meaning it [TS]

01:06:05   yeah yeah that that was me doing my [TS]

01:06:07   radar o'reilly that are bak moment haha [TS]

01:06:11   yes but yeah I love that one but I'm [TS]

01:06:14   going to mention a classic episode it [TS]

01:06:18   which is not usually my forte because [TS]

01:06:20   i'm admittedly a bigger fan of the new [TS]

01:06:23   series in the classic but [TS]

01:06:25   the perfect gateway drug to the classic [TS]

01:06:27   series i think is the sylvester mccoy [TS]

01:06:30   episode remembrance of the Daleks it is [TS]

01:06:33   one of the best Daleks stories that the [TS]

01:06:36   classic series every did plus you it's [TS]

01:06:39   the first full story that features aces [TS]

01:06:42   a companion and you get an idea of what [TS]

01:06:46   doctor who could become in the future [TS]

01:06:48   because you have an in you have an [TS]

01:06:51   intriguing relationship between the [TS]

01:06:53   doctor and the companion you have an [TS]

01:06:54   emotional arc for the companion and some [TS]

01:06:58   of the storytelling some of the [TS]

01:06:59   direction our feels very modern it was [TS]

01:07:03   the first episode of Doctor Who that I [TS]

01:07:07   remember watching thinking this could [TS]

01:07:10   actually work on American television I i [TS]

01:07:14   highly recommend it plus it's the first [TS]

01:07:16   time we see on camera without any cheats [TS]

01:07:19   a floating Dalek yes but remembrance of [TS]

01:07:23   the Daleks is a little remembrance of [TS]

01:07:24   the Daleks is a lot of fun and and if [TS]

01:07:28   you've watched a lot of the new series [TS]

01:07:30   it will help ease you into the classic [TS]

01:07:35   series Erica what about you [TS]

01:07:36   well as i already said as far as a place [TS]

01:07:38   to start I think 11th hour but I also [TS]

01:07:40   want to say that if if it's somebody [TS]

01:07:41   that I know they're a big enough geek [TS]

01:07:43   that they're willing to sit down and [TS]

01:07:44   commit to the entire new series then [TS]

01:07:46   I'll tell them to start with Rose [TS]

01:07:47   because why not [TS]

01:07:49   but as far as a favorite episode I'm on [TS]

01:07:51   record as a the rebus operation being my [TS]

01:07:54   favorite doctor whose story of all time [TS]

01:07:56   wow I will direct yeah but I will direct [TS]

01:07:59   you to the very episode in which we talk [TS]

01:08:01   about the Fourth Doctor recover the [TS]

01:08:02   reverse operation in detail so i won't [TS]

01:08:04   talk about that now up until just a [TS]

01:08:08   couple weeks ago the other favorite [TS]

01:08:11   episode of mine was the deadly assassin [TS]

01:08:13   because i'm a sucker for for stuff that [TS]

01:08:14   happens on Gallifrey like that the [TS]

01:08:16   history of the Time Lords but just in [TS]

01:08:18   the past week and a half or so I watched [TS]

01:08:21   for the very first time the patrick [TS]

01:08:23   troughton 10-part story the world games [TS]

01:08:26   and I was fracking blown away [TS]

01:08:30   I could not believe how good this was [TS]

01:08:31   it's one of those things where everybody [TS]

01:08:33   kept saying it's amazing you have to [TS]

01:08:35   watch it it's so good [TS]

01:08:36   usually when people build things up like [TS]

01:08:38   that i scoff at it and then i watch it [TS]

01:08:40   it's been built up too much and and I [TS]

01:08:42   just end up disappointed and this was [TS]

01:08:44   the absolute opposite of that it was [TS]

01:08:45   better than I was led to expect we were [TS]

01:08:48   gonna watch one or two episodes a night [TS]

01:08:50   i ended up like I just kept saying no [TS]

01:08:52   Steven start the next one can we please [TS]

01:08:54   watch the next time we went through five [TS]

01:08:56   episodes before i got to be like one [TS]

01:08:58   o'clock in the morning and my eyes were [TS]

01:09:00   closing and then we watched the other [TS]

01:09:01   five the next night [TS]

01:09:03   even my PBS station broke that in two [TS]

01:09:05   weeks yeah because that's a lot of [TS]

01:09:07   episodes it is and really watching it [TS]

01:09:10   all at once is not the best way to do it [TS]

01:09:12   is it should be broken up because again [TS]

01:09:14   that was the way it was to recede but [TS]

01:09:16   it's just it's 10 parts but it cooks the [TS]

01:09:19   pace is amazing you have patrick [TS]

01:09:21   troughton being awesomely Patrick [TS]

01:09:23   Troughton and Jamie and Zoe which are [TS]

01:09:25   one of my favorite artists teams being [TS]

01:09:28   great and it's it's fantastic they just [TS]

01:09:32   there's a lot of running around but it [TS]

01:09:33   doesn't feel like running around it's [TS]

01:09:34   like everything has a purpose and then [TS]

01:09:37   you get the time lords and I always [TS]

01:09:39   loved deadly assassin because i like the [TS]

01:09:41   Time Lord stuff and now I understand why [TS]

01:09:43   some people sort of our little bit itchy [TS]

01:09:45   when they watch deadly assassin because [TS]

01:09:47   I feel like deadly assassin did sort of [TS]

01:09:50   cheap in the Time Lords because in the [TS]

01:09:52   war games they are badass [TS]

01:09:54   it simply can't they can look at [TS]

01:09:56   somebody and and make them hurt [TS]

01:09:58   they're just like these godlike beings [TS]

01:10:00   and their rather petty and backbiting [TS]

01:10:03   once you get around to the deadly [TS]

01:10:04   assassin which i still love because it's [TS]

01:10:06   a great story but I if your classic [TS]

01:10:09   series fan and you haven't watched the [TS]

01:10:11   war games i can't recommend it enough i [TS]

01:10:13   think the pace of the tradin episodes [TS]

01:10:15   that I've seen is surprisingly good [TS]

01:10:19   i I don't know what happened in the [TS]

01:10:20   seventies but the the pace of those [TS]

01:10:22   shows [TS]

01:10:23   I feel like it slowed down because that [TS]

01:10:25   the trout and stuff I think moves a lot [TS]

01:10:28   better than a lot of what I remember of [TS]

01:10:29   the per trillion and and Tom Baker areas [TS]

01:10:32   being just kind of slow moving right but [TS]

01:10:36   cotton in the sixties it doesn't get [TS]

01:10:38   slower as you go back there's a really [TS]

01:10:40   nice pace in the sixties although maybe [TS]

01:10:42   it's maybe it's just that the ones that [TS]

01:10:44   we still have existing happen to be the [TS]

01:10:47   ones the filler pay for it could be [TS]

01:10:49   don't know [TS]

01:10:50   the slow ones they did those the ones [TS]

01:10:51   that they would delete that it's really [TS]

01:10:53   smooth [TS]

01:10:54   I so on my list you know I I feel like [TS]

01:10:58   traditionally your trouble with tribbles [TS]

01:11:01   and city on the edge of forever of [TS]

01:11:03   doctor who is the city of death in the [TS]

01:11:05   caves of Androzani there's a link to [TS]

01:11:06   that always come up and I watched the [TS]

01:11:09   city of death with my with my wife like [TS]

01:11:11   last year and it was painful because she [TS]

01:11:13   really did enjoy my call but this is the [TS]

01:11:16   this is that like the top with troubles [TS]

01:11:17   of doctorates and and you know it's it's [TS]

01:11:20   it is it is funny but it uh I I worry [TS]

01:11:24   that I I built that up too much and as a [TS]

01:11:26   fan I I i worshiped too much in case an [TS]

01:11:29   Androzani similarly is kind of in that [TS]

01:11:32   robert holmes kind of way it's a satire [TS]

01:11:34   but it's kind of confused and the plots [TS]

01:11:37   kind of weird and I be honest I don't [TS]

01:11:40   like that started I was trying to end it [TS]

01:11:42   turns out the really like the caves of [TS]

01:11:44   Androzani is for some fourth sort of the [TS]

01:11:47   last episode and a bit not for the setup [TS]

01:11:50   which is really not that great so I'm if [TS]

01:11:52   I had to pick a classic episode i'm [TS]

01:11:54   actually gonna go [TS]

01:11:54   I mean vengeance on varos is my is my [TS]

01:11:57   favorite but if I if I had to pick [TS]

01:11:59   another one that i would recommend to [TS]

01:12:00   people it would also be Colin Baker be [TS]

01:12:02   revelation of the Daleks which is a [TS]

01:12:04   black comedy with Alexei Sayle from the [TS]

01:12:07   young ones as the the DJ that is playing [TS]

01:12:10   music in this place in the whole plot is [TS]

01:12:11   basically but the that that they're [TS]

01:12:13   going to cure are they are they making [TS]

01:12:16   dollars are they feeding people but it's [TS]

01:12:17   all there using dead bodies to do it's [TS]

01:12:19   this horrible thing that happens in the [TS]

01:12:20   in the world of tranquil repose and [TS]

01:12:23   Colin Baker's wearing your agree a blue [TS]

01:12:25   coat for a while that makes you not [TS]

01:12:27   notice this outfit so much [TS]

01:12:29   Wow Jason you like a dark and violent [TS]

01:12:31   yeah yeah well it'sit's that's at i [TS]

01:12:34   don't know i think that that offset some [TS]

01:12:36   of the craziness of that era was that [TS]

01:12:38   was that it is dark it is dark and [TS]

01:12:41   violent but I i really like that that [TS]

01:12:43   revelation of the Daleks is funny too it [TS]

01:12:45   is so dark and so funny but you know I'm [TS]

01:12:48   an old softy I was gonna mention talents [TS]

01:12:50   wink Chang which is horribly racist but [TS]

01:12:54   is also really great and even and [TS]

01:12:58   there's a giant rat and there's a killer [TS]

01:13:00   mannequin or no a killer up uh Barry [TS]

01:13:04   that killer puppet oh I love it that [TS]

01:13:06   scary [TS]

01:13:07   uh but I'm a softy and I i do love the [TS]

01:13:10   new series and although again obligatory [TS]

01:13:14   episode to promote his blink i'm going [TS]

01:13:17   to say the girl in the fireplace which i [TS]

01:13:19   cannot i could watch again and again and [TS]

01:13:22   again and again and it gets me every [TS]

01:13:25   time every aspect of it kills me that I [TS]

01:13:29   love the horse i love the weirdness of [TS]

01:13:32   nothing different to different time [TS]

01:13:34   frames i like how enthusiastic Mickey is [TS]

01:13:39   about being on a spaceship and how Rose [TS]

01:13:41   has to deal with the fact that she's [TS]

01:13:42   like trying to be too cool for school [TS]

01:13:44   like I do this all the time and he's [TS]

01:13:46   really enthusiastic i love the [TS]

01:13:48   connection between David Tennant and so [TS]

01:13:52   fire miles and that and the end where [TS]

01:13:55   they don't know what's happened and why [TS]

01:13:57   they're there and they didn't [TS]

01:13:58   materialize and you see the portrait and [TS]

01:14:00   it turns out that the ship is the SS [TS]

01:14:03   Madame de Pompadour absolutely kills me [TS]

01:14:06   every single sides we know something the [TS]

01:14:08   doctor doesn't i know they never never [TS]

01:14:10   know the answer in some ways so for me [TS]

01:14:12   that's the that's that's that's my [TS]

01:14:15   that's my new series episode III I it [TS]

01:14:17   kills me [TS]

01:14:18   so quite a dichotomy there if I know I [TS]

01:14:21   know [TS]

01:14:22   well old old old series i kind of feel [TS]

01:14:24   like I want that i want some extra [TS]

01:14:26   darkness to take the edge off some of [TS]

01:14:27   the trappings of the old series new [TS]

01:14:29   series i'm all about the love schmaltz [TS]

01:14:31   city there is but there's like barbecued [TS]

01:14:34   people parts and girl in the fireplace [TS]

01:14:35   to a horse and barbecued people parts [TS]

01:14:39   and over the people part so yeah that's [TS]

01:14:41   that's that's the whole point is they're [TS]

01:14:42   using people parts to to rebuild the the [TS]

01:14:44   spaceship was beautiful the glass robots [TS]

01:14:46   glass robots yeah I don't know how they [TS]

01:14:48   work why are they necessary i don't care [TS]

01:14:50   if they lasted robots how do they were [TS]

01:14:52   anti-oil what is that I don't know it's [TS]

01:14:55   great [TS]

01:14:56   bananas are good at anything else we [TS]

01:14:59   should anything else we should talk [TS]

01:15:01   about her [TS]

01:15:02   we've we've talked for an hour we could [TS]

01:15:03   talk for 15 more years I suppose about [TS]

01:15:05   document can we talk about what we [TS]

01:15:07   expect from the upcoming episode airs oh [TS]

01:15:09   yeah so this this we're gonna drop this [TS]

01:15:11   the week of the anniversary and then I [TS]

01:15:13   should tell everybody who stayed with us [TS]

01:15:15   this long that we are going to try to [TS]

01:15:16   get a [TS]

01:15:17   group of our usual doctor flash caste [TS]

01:15:19   people actively together on the on the [TS]

01:15:22   day of the on the day of the event to [TS]

01:15:24   talk about the episode after it airs but [TS]

01:15:27   um but yeah sure let's like go ahead [TS]

01:15:32   Glenn well see sadhana comes back and [TS]

01:15:35   then the well okay now i just want to go [TS]

01:15:37   in reference sorry I should do this [TS]

01:15:38   properly predict three dicks ridemaster [TS]

01:15:43   hey you you have to go back and vocoder [TS]

01:15:48   this and post sir victor i am a Dalek [TS]

01:15:52   i I just want to go and point out that i [TS]

01:15:54   was one of the people who realized that [TS]

01:15:56   river song was a mere or his daughter [TS]

01:15:58   long before it was ever reveal a long [TS]

01:16:01   remember I was talking about one college [TS]

01:16:04   he called it yeah i called it called [TS]

01:16:05   long a time so i got no idea what's [TS]

01:16:08   gonna happen but it looks you know what [TS]

01:16:09   thing is often the new at the preview [TS]

01:16:12   these things here like this one I'm just [TS]

01:16:14   like it's got every I mean there is such [TS]

01:16:17   a fan thing right it's got the moment in [TS]

01:16:19   it that they hinted at the end of time [TS]

01:16:22   it's got all these little bits and [TS]

01:16:23   pieces are all pulling everything [TS]

01:16:24   together and you know it's got one of [TS]

01:16:27   our favorite doctor one of the best [TS]

01:16:28   actress who's ever lived in it it's got [TS]

01:16:30   some of the favorite companions it's got [TS]

01:16:32   rose looking crazy so it just feels like [TS]

01:16:35   it's gonna be a big box of fun and I [TS]

01:16:37   just hope they can pull it all off but [TS]

01:16:39   it looks good where it doesn't have any [TS]

01:16:41   cheesy kind of style to which some of [TS]

01:16:43   the previews for some previous specials [TS]

01:16:46   have and then it kind of turned out to [TS]

01:16:47   be a little bit like that so I'm looking [TS]

01:16:49   forward to it so you're predicting that [TS]

01:16:50   will be good i'm predicting yeah well [TS]

01:16:52   i'm predicting you know there's this [TS]

01:16:53   issue about when they brought so I I [TS]

01:16:56   don't know feel having to do with the [TS]

01:16:57   genetic or the was the looms no no no [TS]

01:17:02   but they brought lot they brought [TS]

01:17:04   Rassilon back so that was from TV the [TS]

01:17:07   looms are not from tvoi no really [TS]

01:17:09   new adventure novels right line that's [TS]

01:17:11   still in Barrow mother still snow long [TS]

01:17:13   barrel [TS]

01:17:14   ok well there's still something for [TS]

01:17:15   something that's going on there we have [TS]

01:17:17   you know the master is not peak there is [TS]

01:17:19   no master no we don't know we don't know [TS]

01:17:22   having your guarantee there are no [TS]

01:17:24   little you through the mail master know [TS]

01:17:27   rooms no Rassilon I just feel like [TS]

01:17:29   they're all right we'll see Rassilon I [TS]

01:17:31   bet will be mentioned he's a great guy [TS]

01:17:33   but the I i'm just wondering if they'll [TS]

01:17:35   bring back some of the scene from me [TS]

01:17:38   they would have from the rational on [TS]

01:17:40   scenes in the end of time and forgot the [TS]

01:17:43   other names creature bring Timothy [TS]

01:17:44   Dalton back I don't think that's gonna [TS]

01:17:45   happen I don't know [TS]

01:17:46   well no but I just think there's there's [TS]

01:17:47   something there's loose ends that they [TS]

01:17:50   set for us and I wonder what there's [TS]

01:17:52   trouble [TS]

01:17:52   I think I think Steven Moffat more [TS]

01:17:55   concerned with his own loose ends than [TS]

01:17:56   Russell Davis is listens but thats yes [TS]

01:17:59   again we'll see [TS]

01:18:01   fair enough Erica chipped you have any [TS]

01:18:03   predictions about about the 50 up i [TS]

01:18:06   think it's going to be fantastic i [TS]

01:18:10   really think that it doesn't matter what [TS]

01:18:12   the story does that there are going to [TS]

01:18:14   be enough nods to the past in it that my [TS]

01:18:17   little fangirl heart is going to be [TS]

01:18:18   going pitter-patter patent and I won't [TS]

01:18:20   really care what's happening until the [TS]

01:18:22   second or third time i watch it and then [TS]

01:18:24   start thinking about the plot i just i [TS]

01:18:26   think i'm going to love it and that's [TS]

01:18:28   good enough for me [TS]

01:18:29   likewise i I've seen I've seen more than [TS]

01:18:32   I want to really of the trailers yeah [TS]

01:18:34   they're there enough clues in there [TS]

01:18:37   about what's going on [TS]

01:18:38   one of the things that fascinates me is [TS]

01:18:40   that there are some very clear nods to [TS]

01:18:41   the club to the classic series including [TS]

01:18:45   the return of of a group of characters [TS]

01:18:49   that I will not spoil for those who [TS]

01:18:51   haven't seen it but there are nods to [TS]

01:18:55   their there's even a picture of [TS]

01:18:56   chameleons on the wall at Ground the the [TS]

01:18:59   Rope the the robot that did not work in [TS]

01:19:02   the peter davison episode know they're [TS]

01:19:05   so so erica is spot-on as far as the [TS]

01:19:09   fanservice is concerned what I'm excited [TS]

01:19:11   about is that by all reports [TS]

01:19:14   David Tennant and matt smith had great [TS]

01:19:17   chemistry on set and we're going to see [TS]

01:19:19   we're going to see the similarities and [TS]

01:19:22   the differences between these two [TS]

01:19:24   incredibly popular modern doctors and [TS]

01:19:27   that that fills me with glee [TS]

01:19:30   I'm going to predict that it will be a [TS]

01:19:33   more coherent plot than the five doctors [TS]

01:19:35   what boy putting yourself out on a limb [TS]

01:19:39   I don't know I seen the five doctors [TS]

01:19:41   like 20 times and my love it and the the [TS]

01:19:46   that's right the podcast of Rassilon the [TS]

01:19:51   deathstone the terrible's oh did I know [TS]

01:19:54   it's going to be better than the five [TS]

01:19:55   doctors i'm sorry it's gonna be better [TS]

01:19:57   than five doctors it's certainly going [TS]

01:19:58   to be much more coherent and I too will [TS]

01:20:01   probably pay more attention the second [TS]

01:20:03   or third time i watch it partially [TS]

01:20:05   because the second or third time I watch [TS]

01:20:07   it I will be in a movie theater watching [TS]

01:20:08   it in 3d [TS]

01:20:10   same here which will be very excited I i [TS]

01:20:12   decided not to watch it on the day of [TS]

01:20:14   which I could have it turns out but I [TS]

01:20:18   I'm gonna we're gonna stay home and [TS]

01:20:19   watch that as a family and then on the [TS]

01:20:21   Monday night we're gonna go my wife and [TS]

01:20:23   I are going to go in and watch it in the [TS]

01:20:25   theater [TS]

01:20:26   I'm trying to Rassilon up some people to [TS]

01:20:28   go with me ah i see what you did there [TS]

01:20:30   having a hard time right now yeah i'm [TS]

01:20:33   not a fan of the 3d but I you know [TS]

01:20:36   come on let's give it a shot it's Doctor [TS]

01:20:38   Who in 3d what am i going to see that [TS]

01:20:39   again I'm not going to buy a 3d TV I'll [TS]

01:20:41   tell you that [TS]

01:20:42   yeah the Dalek plunger come out of the [TS]

01:20:44   screening why when I that's what i want [TS]

01:20:47   to see three-dimensional dolla cool [TS]

01:20:49   that's right three-dimensional John Hurt [TS]

01:20:51   it turns out in 3d the Daleks are flat [TS]

01:20:54   that's the thing they wouldn't tell you [TS]

01:20:55   that he actually that's strange [TS]

01:20:58   they can get bigger fly now but they [TS]

01:20:59   they can extrude into it at least the [TS]

01:21:01   third dimension that's their secret glad [TS]

01:21:04   I can't believe I can't believe these [TS]

01:21:06   super nerdy things that you that you you [TS]

01:21:08   actually have hope might be in the in [TS]

01:21:09   the fifth we'll see if the head i don't [TS]

01:21:12   i think i think they're gonna surprise [TS]

01:21:13   that either gonna be some stuff I think [TS]

01:21:15   that maybe it's more the illusion i [TS]

01:21:16   think you're right i don't think we'll [TS]

01:21:17   see but but you know I thought end of [TS]

01:21:19   time was there was so many surprising [TS]

01:21:20   things and some previously like rather [TS]

01:21:22   be [TS]

01:21:23   the grassland all that crap so yeah [TS]

01:21:25   unexplained brass a lot guide exactly [TS]

01:21:28   like a very lame guys just dancing who [TS]

01:21:30   you got a day-long or whatever [TS]

01:21:33   ok oh the end of time wow what those are [TS]

01:21:37   good time and sometimes whatever that [TS]

01:21:39   was that the whole another podcast I [TS]

01:21:43   liked that episode haha i only noticed [TS]

01:21:47   because all these broken and they're not [TS]

01:21:50   gonna fix it and I watched um I watched [TS]

01:21:53   the what is it the stolen earth and yeah [TS]

01:21:58   journeys and journeys and you and I as I [TS]

01:22:01   watched journeys and I thought why you [TS]

01:22:02   know this would have been a really great [TS]

01:22:03   last episode for david tennant it's not [TS]

01:22:06   0 is 0 in my in my headcanon that's [TS]

01:22:09   where that's player instead sits [TS]

01:22:11   together on one level because I do love [TS]

01:22:12   the waters of mars I think that's a [TS]

01:22:14   great episode but that the specials in [TS]

01:22:16   general weren't that great and other [TS]

01:22:17   than the waters of mars which I did love [TS]

01:22:19   and that was such a that would have been [TS]

01:22:21   such a dramatic sad ending and instead [TS]

01:22:24   it's not [TS]

01:22:25   Erica did you sit in your head canon [TS]

01:22:27   headcanon yes I day and had kids I like [TS]

01:22:29   that [TS]

01:22:30   that's good I guess somebody anymore it [TS]

01:22:32   but I'm happy to disseminate it and pass [TS]

01:22:34   it on to the massillon i have that for [TS]

01:22:36   sherlock holmes a number for dr. i will [TS]

01:22:38   once again recommend there's an [TS]

01:22:39   excellent episode of the 2-minute Time [TS]

01:22:41   Lord where we're chip spoke to an expert [TS]

01:22:43   about canon in the more traditional [TS]

01:22:46   sense and how that could be applied the [TS]

01:22:49   same sort of principles to Doctor Who [TS]

01:22:52   cannon and I thought that was an [TS]

01:22:53   excellent episode so i'll put in the [TS]

01:22:55   show no it was check it out i was left [TS]

01:22:57   on chip I I appreciate it [TS]

01:22:59   that is a mark goodacre a professor for [TS]

01:23:01   a professor of New Testament history at [TS]

01:23:03   Duke University and he and i just sat [TS]

01:23:05   down and geeked out about Doctor Who [TS]

01:23:07   cannon and what the word cannon means [TS]

01:23:10   and where it comes from and it was a [TS]

01:23:11   great conversations really great i love [TS]

01:23:13   that stuff [TS]

01:23:14   I love stuff like that words we're [TS]

01:23:16   taking it back apart and trying to [TS]

01:23:17   figure out why [TS]

01:23:18   how do we get to this point where [TS]

01:23:20   everybody's got a different it turns out [TS]

01:23:21   it's not that different that doctor who [TS]

01:23:23   fans trying to say what we're going to [TS]

01:23:24   honor what we're not not that different [TS]

01:23:26   from how religions define what is in the [TS]

01:23:30   book and what is out of the book of [TS]

01:23:32   fascinating things a little the little [TS]

01:23:34   blue book basically asked [TS]

01:23:36   after who is television so Legion of [TS]

01:23:38   super-heroes is to comics em wow that's [TS]

01:23:43   about well there's isn't their time [TS]

01:23:45   travel to that's really clear is and [TS]

01:23:48   fifty years of backstory that yeah we [TS]

01:23:50   reconcile all right right yeah that's [TS]

01:23:53   right I remember that from when i was in [TS]

01:23:54   unit back in the seventies or was it the [TS]

01:23:56   eighties hey there you go [TS]

01:24:00   we don't we don't speak of it now we [TS]

01:24:03   will go back to a Star Trek reference [TS]

01:24:04   they are Klingons we do not speak of it [TS]

01:24:07   exactly I'll explain later alright well [TS]

01:24:11   this has been great to just geeked out [TS]

01:24:12   about Doctor Who its 50th this is why we [TS]

01:24:15   did this and and we'll do a flash cast [TS]

01:24:17   hopefully in the next few days well [TS]

01:24:19   about the episode itself but it's been [TS]

01:24:21   funded kind of retread Doctor Who 50 [TS]

01:24:24   years many doctors many stories lots of [TS]

01:24:26   fans and lots of people discovering [TS]

01:24:29   doctor who over the years to so this has [TS]

01:24:32   been great and i would like to thank now [TS]

01:24:34   my three fellow travelers my i'm not [TS]

01:24:37   going to call you my companions I just [TS]

01:24:38   can't do it just to put me on the place [TS]

01:24:40   being a doctor and I'm not gonna do that [TS]

01:24:42   the doctors off-screen for my fellow [TS]

01:24:44   travelers Glenn fleischmann thank you [TS]

01:24:45   for being here good to hear from you [TS]

01:24:47   again thanks for having me back but you [TS]

01:24:49   know in the next episode all been all [TS]

01:24:51   the previous ones I've got it figured [TS]

01:24:52   out [TS]

01:24:53   I can't wait to see who which actors [TS]

01:24:54   playing the second Glenn Erica and sign [TS]

01:24:58   thank you again for being on this three [TS]

01:25:00   third time's the charm now array [TS]

01:25:03   yes I've enjoyed it so much thank you so [TS]

01:25:05   much for having me really i mean but you [TS]

01:25:07   you've asked me to talk about some of my [TS]

01:25:09   favorite things [TS]

01:25:10   no thank you for being my doctor who won [TS]

01:25:11   my doctor riggers to I thought that was [TS]

01:25:13   but I made it I made a conscious effort [TS]

01:25:14   of getting the people have a long [TS]

01:25:16   storied history with Doctor Who and then [TS]

01:25:18   we'll get the usual suspects back [TS]

01:25:19   together for the fifth for the 50th [TS]

01:25:21   episode and tear apart for tonight we we [TS]

01:25:25   enjoy and chip you know again chips [TS]

01:25:28   others i can see your name [TS]

01:25:29   it's out there who makes one of my [TS]

01:25:33   favorite doctor who collects me one of [TS]

01:25:35   my favorite podcasts and it's great to [TS]

01:25:37   be able to talk to you about Doctor Who [TS]

01:25:38   again on the uncomfortable thank you so [TS]

01:25:41   much for being here [TS]

01:25:42   Jason you were fantastic and you know [TS]

01:25:45   what [TS]

01:25:45   so it wasn't you yeah that's fantastic [TS]

01:25:50   well and that brings us to the end this [TS]

01:25:52   is the end but the moment has been [TS]

01:25:55   prepared for I was the watcher all along [TS]

01:25:58   I'm Jason sell your host and the watcher [TS]

01:26:00   thanks for listening [TS]

01:26:02   we'll see you next time [TS]

01:26:11   okay time for a little post-credit [TS]

01:26:16   sequence we're back with panelist Clint [TS]

01:26:18   fleischmann blends are unofficial [TS]

01:26:20   sponsor our extra sponsor because he's [TS]

01:26:21   got a Kickstarter you may not know Glenn [TS]

01:26:24   is the editor owner and publisher of [TS]

01:26:25   something called the magazine it's an [TS]

01:26:28   interesting magazine filled with lots of [TS]

01:26:30   interesting writing it's published every [TS]

01:26:32   two weeks so I guess we're being very [TS]

01:26:33   British in this episode we could say [TS]

01:26:35   it's fortnightly right fortnightly and [TS]

01:26:38   so it's not just an iOS app but it's [TS]

01:26:40   also a website publishing at the dash [TS]

01:26:43   magazine dot org and you can get [TS]

01:26:45   everything there right climb [TS]

01:26:46   yeah it works it's got responsive design [TS]

01:26:49   the latest thing about the latest thing [TS]

01:26:50   anymore and if you can read on mobile [TS]

01:26:52   and desktop and and all that stuff [TS]

01:26:54   yeah it's me started as an iOS app it's [TS]

01:26:56   a great reading experience there but the [TS]

01:26:57   website is it's very very similar but [TS]

01:27:00   it's hard to let people know that it's [TS]

01:27:02   not just my last thing right read [TS]

01:27:03   anywhere and at what we're talking about [TS]

01:27:05   today for four people out there this is [TS]

01:27:07   the sponsorship is if they go to the [TS]

01:27:09   dash magazine dot org slash book they [TS]

01:27:12   will be taken to a magical place where [TS]

01:27:15   they discover your Kickstarter that [TS]

01:27:16   you're doing for the magazine right i [TS]

01:27:18   know this is crazy it's like Pinocchio [TS]

01:27:20   we want to be a real book so we're kind [TS]

01:27:23   of have been talking about it for a long [TS]

01:27:25   time is that the economics are so weird [TS]

01:27:27   in this industry so we have a successful [TS]

01:27:30   electronic publication but in order to [TS]

01:27:32   take it to the next level we really need [TS]

01:27:34   to go into print because people like [TS]

01:27:37   print books and we can't we can't make [TS]

01:27:39   everyone happy with an electronic [TS]

01:27:40   publication or with the subscription and [TS]

01:27:43   people told us since practically the [TS]

01:27:45   thing launched when Marco Arment found [TS]

01:27:47   it that they wanted something that could [TS]

01:27:50   hold in their hands that wasn't an ipad [TS]

01:27:51   like a book they can actually hold they [TS]

01:27:53   could give away as a gift they could sit [TS]

01:27:55   down and read and use reflected light [TS]

01:27:57   from a lamp on to their eyes to read it [TS]

01:27:59   so we kind of went all out it's going to [TS]

01:28:01   be a hardcover book it's every spread is [TS]

01:28:04   being designed we're taking all the [TS]

01:28:06   illustration and photography and even [TS]

01:28:07   more going to commission a new feature [TS]

01:28:09   for it and this is going to be a it's [TS]

01:28:12   going to be like a magazine in a book so [TS]

01:28:14   it will have the look of features like [TS]

01:28:16   you're getting a magazine but it's going [TS]

01:28:18   to be meant to be something that that [TS]

01:28:20   last and have a nice hardcover and [TS]

01:28:21   offset printing in the rest it's gonna [TS]

01:28:23   be a real thing and they're all sorts of [TS]

01:28:25   different pledge levels you can get an [TS]

01:28:26   e-book you can get a B even get the [TS]

01:28:29   hardcover book and as we record this [TS]

01:28:31   there's even an early bird special so if [TS]

01:28:32   you one of the first 750 to get in [TS]

01:28:35   you'll get a you'll get a discount over [TS]

01:28:37   the over the full price and then there's [TS]

01:28:39   crazy because its Kickstarter right [TS]

01:28:41   there's crazy stuff that you can get you [TS]

01:28:43   can get banked in the book you can get [TS]

01:28:45   multiple copies of the book you can get [TS]

01:28:46   copies of illustrations that are in the [TS]

01:28:49   book and then my favorites Glenn are the [TS]

01:28:52   are the visits [TS]

01:28:54   yes if if they're let's say 20 people [TS]

01:28:58   out there like you very much Jason and [TS]

01:29:00   they want to get you to visit if those [TS]

01:29:01   20 people just came up with $25 and ten [TS]

01:29:06   cents i can to the bath then they could [TS]

01:29:08   raise 5001 dollars and get you all [TS]

01:29:12   expenses paid by us from that amount to [TS]

01:29:14   come out and recorded episode [TS]

01:29:16   incomparable with them that's right it's [TS]

01:29:18   for 5001 dollars i will come anywhere in [TS]

01:29:20   the continental US i will buy you buy [TS]

01:29:22   dinner for two people i will record an [TS]

01:29:24   episode of the incomparable in your home [TS]

01:29:26   to be determined whether we have other [TS]

01:29:27   guests on by a skype or whether it's an [TS]

01:29:30   interview that i do with you and your [TS]

01:29:32   friends about what they like [TS]

01:29:34   in the world of geek culture schedule [TS]

01:29:38   some time in 2014 that's 5001 dollars [TS]

01:29:40   because that's I wanted life won't be [TS]

01:29:42   one dollar more than the lex friedman [TS]

01:29:44   option relax freedom comes to visit you [TS]

01:29:46   he's just five thousand dollars so you [TS]

01:29:48   can get one person with 5001 dollars or [TS]

01:29:51   5,000 one people with one knowledge [TS]

01:29:54   ya ali dinner for 2 i'm gonna buy dinner [TS]

01:29:55   for two yeah yeah we're trying to have [TS]

01:29:57   fun and you know you mentioned Lex and I [TS]

01:29:59   mentioned you is the funny thing about [TS]

01:30:00   the magazine is pretty close overlap [TS]

01:30:03   with the incomparable staff is in this [TS]

01:30:05   collection especially especially in some [TS]

01:30:07   of the earlier issues when Marco went to [TS]

01:30:09   people he knew to contribute some of the [TS]

01:30:11   great early essays we did and also some [TS]

01:30:13   later ones are from folks like John [TS]

01:30:14   siracusa Scott McNulty Lisa Schmeisser [TS]

01:30:17   yeah let's run through the list are [TS]

01:30:18   seven and comparable panelists who were [TS]

01:30:21   in this post and i'll point it was not [TS]

01:30:23   intentional i selected entirely for [TS]

01:30:24   content that was like oh that's so [TS]

01:30:26   serenity Caldwell John siracusa Scott [TS]

01:30:28   McNulty Lisa Schmeisser felt Michaels [TS]

01:30:30   lex friedman and me are all in the book [TS]

01:30:33   which is another reason why you need to [TS]

01:30:34   go would you say Glenn to V dash [TS]

01:30:37   magazine dot org slash book and back the [TS]

01:30:39   kickstarter and get a beautiful [TS]

01:30:41   hardcover book with great writing [TS]

01:30:42   including seven pieces from incomparable [TS]

01:30:45   panelists i would say yes there's also a [TS]

01:30:47   lot of pieces about gaming and video [TS]

01:30:49   games in there including scott McNulty's [TS]

01:30:51   lovely article about dnd and how it [TS]

01:30:53   helped him sort of sort of introversion [TS]

01:30:55   which is you know one of my favorite [TS]

01:30:57   pieces about gaming is that article that [TS]

01:30:59   yeah a great piece about journey from [TS]

01:31:00   John Syracuse's so lots of things that [TS]

01:31:02   are keying off of things that you've [TS]

01:31:03   heard about in the incomparable to which [TS]

01:31:05   is pretty cool [TS]

01:31:06   it is true alright so that's at the dash [TS]

01:31:08   magazine network / book and Glenn did [TS]

01:31:11   not compensate me for this but I not too [TS]

01:31:13   uncomfortable listeners would like to [TS]

01:31:15   know so thanks Glenn [TS]

01:31:17   thank you and thank you listeners [TS]
