00:04:36 ◼   ► chapter 2 chapter 3 the story continues [TS]

00:05:26 ◼   ► start seeing the ads and they're all the [TS]

00:05:28 ◼   ► same and I'm thinking this is the most [TS]

00:05:30 ◼   ► you could get out of the show to make it [TS]

00:05:33 ◼   ► seem funny because it's I've got these [TS]

00:05:34 ◼   ► memorized now right and and I and I [TS]

00:05:38 ◼   ► watched the pilot and I'm thinking okay [TS]

00:05:39 ◼   ► so all of these clips really were from [TS]

00:05:41 ◼   ► the pilot oh crap but i liked the pilot [TS]

00:05:44 ◼   ► so I kept watching and and I realized [TS]

00:05:46 ◼   ► that if they had shown clips from any [TS]

00:05:48 ◼   ► further in it would ruin the story it [TS]

00:05:51 ◼   ► would spoil too much so I actually [TS]

00:05:52 ◼   ► watched this because of you guys because [TS]

00:05:57 ◼   ► we were talking about it incessantly [TS]

00:05:58 ◼   ► well it really that but partly it was [TS]

00:06:01 ◼   ► because I had the opposite reaction to [TS]

00:06:03 ◼   ► the incessant advertising which was you [TS]

00:06:06 ◼   ► can only show me one joke that means you [TS]

00:06:08 ◼   ► only have a joke hard pass that's what i [TS]

00:06:11 ◼   ► was thinking read I kinda was like [TS]

00:06:13 ◼   ► allergic to it and then yeah because I [TS]

00:06:16 ◼   ► hang out with you guys and you guys [TS]

00:06:17 ◼   ► really oh I got a good place have you [TS]

00:06:19 ◼   ► seen the good place I loved a good place [TS]

00:06:20 ◼   ► the good place oh good like the place [TS]

00:06:22 ◼   ► that it goes good it is and I'm like [TS]

00:06:24 ◼   ► okay fine so I was like really cuz like [TS]

00:06:27 ◼   ► all you guys were sort of like when you [TS]

00:06:30 ◼   ► meet that family members girlfriend and [TS]

00:06:33 ◼   ► you can tell that he's dating out of his [TS]

00:06:34 ◼   ► League and you're like yeah but she's [TS]

00:06:37 ◼   ► really like you [TS]

00:06:38 ◼   ► about it be about the greatness of [TS]

00:06:41 ◼   ► whatever you know like that's what's [TS]

00:06:43 ◼   ► happening and so it felt to me like [TS]

00:06:46 ◼   ► that's kind of you know you you all sort [TS]

00:06:48 ◼   ► of went I wasn't really sure what to [TS]

00:06:50 ◼   ► expect here but I'm pleasant i am very [TS]

00:06:53 ◼   ► pleasantly surprised and I'm it was not [TS]

00:06:55 ◼   ► a waste of my time and I'm really glad I [TS]

00:06:56 ◼   ► watched it and then I know Glenn was [TS]

00:06:59 ◼   ► declaring very early on I'm gonna go [TS]

00:07:04 ◼   ► give it a shot like all of you guys [TS]

00:07:07 ◼   ► different viewing taste so we had a hard [TS]

00:07:09 ◼   ► time finding things that we will both [TS]

00:07:10 ◼   ► equally enjoy it like what I get through [TS]

00:07:12 ◼   ► and my name is earl is a show also about [TS]

00:07:14 ◼   ► ethics that we liked very much in the [TS]

00:07:16 ◼   ► first season and had a halt in a second [TS]

00:07:18 ◼   ► but i heard everybody whose opinion is [TS]

00:07:22 ◼   ► similar to mine about things they like [TS]

00:07:23 ◼   ► liked the good place at unreasonable [TS]

00:07:26 ◼   ► level with the NBC not nagging NBC thing [TS]

00:07:29 ◼   ► is I didn't know something of this [TS]

00:07:31 ◼   ► quality subtlety and intellectualism [TS]

00:07:35 ◼   ► with the sort of cleverness like high [TS]

00:07:37 ◼   ► and low brow humor mixing together was [TS]

00:07:39 ◼   ► possible on broadcast television and I'm [TS]

00:07:42 ◼   ► so glad to be proved wrong and I know [TS]

00:07:43 ◼   ► their other shows that have aspects of [TS]

00:07:45 ◼   ► this but to see something that's just [TS]

00:07:47 ◼   ► wonderful summer on cable or HBO yeah [TS]

00:07:49 ◼   ► usually otherwise but they got there but [TS]

00:07:51 ◼   ► my wife and I would watch an episode and [TS]

00:07:53 ◼   ► we would turn it off and we go how did [TS]

00:07:55 ◼   ► this get made how did this get here is [TS]

00:07:57 ◼   ► this really a DC holy cow that's where I [TS]

00:07:59 ◼   ► was was like three episodes in I'm like [TS]

00:08:02 ◼   ► what does NBC have on topic and if they [TS]

00:08:04 ◼   ► were able to get him to agree to the [TS]

00:08:06 ◼   ► show he apparently fell in love with it [TS]

00:08:08 ◼   ► as soon as he read it and you know how [TS]

00:08:10 ◼   ► can rightly so I mean I I know there's a [TS]

00:08:14 ◼   ► broad variety of people on the writing [TS]

00:08:16 ◼   ► staff and the producing staff and I [TS]

00:08:18 ◼   ► don't know anything about their [TS]

00:08:20 ◼   ► backgrounds but i but i have to say i [TS]

00:08:22 ◼   ► wish my mother were here i think she [TS]

00:08:24 ◼   ► would love this show and I mean just [TS]

00:08:27 ◼   ► from what I know of of theology and her [TS]

00:08:30 ◼   ► writing about it I think she would find [TS]

00:08:32 ◼   ► it very theologically sound no matter [TS]

00:08:34 ◼   ► what religion you are so one of the [TS]

00:08:36 ◼   ► things that I really like about the [TS]

00:08:37 ◼   ► pilot I mean the pilot is very I grant [TS]

00:08:40 ◼   ► you they cut it up into promos and we [TS]

00:08:43 ◼   ► saw it every time they cut away from [TS]

00:08:44 ◼   ► gymnastics for three weeks but it is [TS]

00:08:47 ◼   ► very carefully done in that it tries to [TS]

00:08:50 ◼   ► get a lot of the question [TS]

00:08:52 ◼   ► that we had out of the way very quickly [TS]

00:08:54 ◼   ► like literally first Kristen Bell who is [TS]

00:08:57 ◼   ► who's great in you know loved her and uh [TS]

00:08:59 ◼   ► Veronica Mars and now here she is and [TS]

00:09:01 ◼   ► she's grating this too and she's she's [TS]

00:09:03 ◼   ► great because she's so likable and and [TS]

00:09:05 ◼   ► that helps offset her character doing [TS]

00:09:07 ◼   ► all these awful things and being kind of [TS]

00:09:09 ◼   ► unlikable it's a great combination but [TS]

00:09:11 ◼   ► first thing that happens is she gets [TS]

00:09:12 ◼   ► called into Ted Danson's office and says [TS]

00:09:14 ◼   ► what you you're gonna need I got a few [TS]

00:09:16 ◼   ► she's actually what she says I have one [TS]

00:09:17 ◼   ► question and then asked three questions [TS]

00:09:19 ◼   ► which is great and then he tries to [TS]

00:09:21 ◼   ► explain it and then the next scene is [TS]

00:09:23 ◼   ► the presentation where Ted Danson [TS]

00:09:25 ◼   ► basically gives he like literally [TS]

00:09:26 ◼   ► gestures up to a screen and then a video [TS]

00:09:29 ◼   ► plays of Ted Danson explaining how the [TS]

00:09:31 ◼   ► afterlife works and it's so smart [TS]

00:09:33 ◼   ► because it's funny there are lots of [TS]

00:09:34 ◼   ► jokes it's entertaining but it also gets [TS]

00:09:37 ◼   ► a lot of stuff out of the way so that [TS]

00:09:39 ◼   ► they can go on with the story including [TS]

00:09:41 ◼   ► shoot first thing she asks is which [TS]

00:09:44 ◼   ► religion was right and and he basically [TS]

00:09:46 ◼   ► says all of them got about five percent [TS]

00:09:47 ◼   ► right and then there was this one dude [TS]

00:09:49 ◼   ► who was high on mushrooms this joke I [TS]

00:09:51 ◼   ► don't know why this kills me aid it [TS]

00:09:53 ◼   ► kills me every Doug force I looked up [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► the name he was about forty two percent [TS]

00:09:57 ◼   ► directly we couldn't believe it and he's [TS]

00:09:59 ◼   ► got like a memorial plaque in the office [TS]

00:10:01 ◼   ► that the thing that does me in this is [TS]

00:10:03 ◼   ► the great thing about the show me in [TS]

00:10:04 ◼   ► every episode after that this is not [TS]

00:10:06 ◼   ► really a spoiler they just at some point [TS]

00:10:08 ◼   ► they pan across the offices is a shot [TS]

00:10:09 ◼   ► and there's Doug the picture of Doug [TS]

00:10:11 ◼   ► unfortunate effect left Glenn talk about [TS]

00:10:16 ◼   ► a big reveal there's actually if you [TS]

00:10:18 ◼   ► think about it there are twists in in [TS]

00:10:20 ◼   ► all if not every episode then almost [TS]

00:10:22 ◼   ► every episode where there are things [TS]

00:10:24 ◼   ► that you assume and then it gets flipped [TS]

00:10:26 ◼   ► on its head so there there are many [TS]

00:10:37 ◼   ► pilot I think is really is really clever [TS]

00:10:39 ◼   ► and what it does the cast is really good [TS]

00:10:41 ◼   ► so the people that that Eleanor meets in [TS]

00:10:46 ◼   ► addition to Michael the architect we [TS]

00:10:48 ◼   ► meet Chitti who is an ethics professor [TS]

00:10:51 ◼   ► from Africa who is is like he [TS]

00:10:53 ◼   ► understands how to be a more ethical [TS]

00:10:54 ◼   ► person Eleanor eventually admits to him [TS]

00:10:57 ◼   ► that she shouldn't be there and they [TS]

00:10:59 ◼   ► work out a plan where he's going to [TS]

00:11:00 ◼   ► teach her how to be a better person in [TS]

00:11:02 ◼   ► order to earn her way her right into [TS]

00:11:05 ◼   ► being in the good [TS]

00:11:06 ◼   ► place and not be sent to eternal torment [TS]

00:11:08 ◼   ► in the bad place her next door they lit [TS]

00:11:11 ◼   ► oh by the way they live in a house [TS]

00:11:12 ◼   ► that's very small and full of paintings [TS]

00:11:14 ◼   ► of clowns which is great because she [TS]

00:11:17 ◼   ► loves clam because the other Eleanor [TS]

00:11:19 ◼   ► loves clowns and they are horrifying [TS]

00:11:21 ◼   ► this is the perfect house for the other [TS]

00:11:23 ◼   ► element next door in the giant mansion [TS]

00:11:26 ◼   ► because everybody gets a house it's [TS]

00:11:27 ◼   ► appropriate for them and this really [TS]

00:11:29 ◼   ► bugs Eleanor our tejani who is a [TS]

00:11:33 ◼   ► beautiful philanthropist who knew lots [TS]

00:11:37 ◼   ► of famous people and is my read on her [TS]

00:11:40 ◼   ► is and just awful because she's so [TS]

00:11:43 ◼   ► beautiful and perfect and knows it and [TS]

00:11:45 ◼   ► she's just awful and her soul mate who [TS]

00:11:48 ◼   ► is a Buddhist monk named Jian you who is [TS]

00:11:51 ◼   ► silent took a vow of silence during his [TS]

00:11:54 ◼   ► life yes nanny decided to maintain it [TS]

00:11:57 ◼   ► even still even yeah even in the [TS]

00:11:59 ◼   ► afterlife the last piece of the puzzle [TS]

00:12:01 ◼   ► is and I think maybe the most brilliant [TS]

00:12:04 ◼   ► little bit of casting is there is a [TS]

00:12:08 ◼   ► character named Janet who is a piece of [TS]

00:12:10 ◼   ► software she's a woman but she's [TS]

00:12:12 ◼   ► actually kind of like a hologram woman [TS]

00:12:15 ◼   ► she's not a girl she's not as she's not [TS]

00:12:16 ◼   ► a robot either she is she is a piece of [TS]

00:12:19 ◼   ► software who is basically the search [TS]

00:12:21 ◼   ► engine of the afterlife and takes [TS]

00:12:24 ◼   ► everything kind of literally and is [TS]

00:12:26 ◼   ► super weird and just appears and [TS]

00:12:27 ◼   ► disappears and it is brilliant because [TS]

00:12:29 ◼   ► she's just a piece of very strange [TS]

00:12:31 ◼   ► software and that is and that is this [TS]

00:12:34 ◼   ► bizarre world in a good place they have [TS]

00:12:35 ◼   ► lots of frozen yogurt places there are [TS]

00:12:37 ◼   ► there are night places where you can go [TS]

00:12:40 ◼   ► and there are nice animals to play with [TS]

00:12:42 ◼   ► it's it's paradise right I want to bring [TS]

00:12:45 ◼   ► up something about casting to which is [TS]

00:12:47 ◼   ► and it plays into the show and then [TS]

00:12:49 ◼   ► we'll talk after the spoiler about some [TS]

00:12:52 ◼   ► aspects of that then become problematic [TS]

00:12:53 ◼   ► I think is that yes the two leads in the [TS]

00:12:55 ◼   ► show are you know white American people [TS]

00:12:59 ◼   ► Kristen Bell and and and ted danson but [TS]

00:13:03 ◼   ► the cast is essentially the night like [TS]

00:13:05 ◼   ► the next three well except for Jay and [TS]

00:13:08 ◼   ► Jenna it's also a white woman but the [TS]

00:13:09 ◼   ► second next three most important [TS]

00:13:10 ◼   ► characters are people of color people [TS]

00:13:14 ◼   ► with difficult pronounce names in this [TS]

00:13:16 ◼   ► show a little part of the job [TS]

00:13:18 ◼   ► but still a thing and throughout the [TS]

00:13:20 ◼   ► entire cast it's a you know I want to [TS]

00:13:23 ◼   ► say many races ethnicities other aspects [TS]

00:13:27 ◼   ► and I thought as you watch it the reason [TS]

00:13:29 ◼   ► I say it's a it's done effortlessly [TS]

00:13:30 ◼   ► because is essentially never brought up [TS]

00:13:32 ◼   ► as an issue it's never discussed there's [TS]

00:13:34 ◼   ► never a joke about color or whatever so [TS]

00:13:37 ◼   ► at some levels you could say that kind [TS]
