00:01:01   I call this meeting of the incomparable [TS]

00:01:03   Star Wars Club to order we went through [TS]

00:01:05   the original movies we went and watched [TS]

00:01:07   episode one we let a reasonable amount [TS]

00:01:10   of time lapse so that we could recover [TS]

00:01:12   and we're back to talk about star wars [TS]

00:01:15   episode episode I should let me let me [TS]

00:01:18   punch with this properly Star Wars dash [TS]

00:01:20   episode to Roman numeral colon [TS]

00:01:23   attack of the clones right I think [TS]

00:01:25   that's the right way to to get official [TS]

00:01:28   title i got a wrong last time so I'm [TS]

00:01:30   making sure I get it right this time and [TS]

00:01:32   just to explain we would like to talk [TS]

00:01:36   about star wars we did two episode [TS]

00:01:38   chunks about each of the original three [TS]

00:01:41   movies and then by popular demand they [TS]

00:01:43   asked us to talk about [TS]

00:01:44   I you listeners asked us to talk about [TS]

00:01:47   the prequels which were which we denied [TS]

00:01:49   all knowledge of before 1i listeners [TS]

00:01:51   one-night-only we bring it back and we [TS]

00:01:54   talked about it and so that leads us to [TS]

00:01:56   this unfortunate moment which is what we [TS]

00:01:59   watch Star Wars Episode two and now [TS]

00:02:00   we're going to talk about it [TS]

00:02:01   I want to I want to leave some warnings [TS]

00:02:03   right here which is although we love [TS]

00:02:05   Star Wars especially the original [TS]

00:02:06   trilogy of prequels we don't love so [TS]

00:02:08   much and although we try not to do whole [TS]

00:02:11   episodes about things we know we're [TS]

00:02:12   gonna hate be just to destroy them every [TS]

00:02:15   now and then catharsis is good for the [TS]

00:02:17   soul i believe and that's I think what [TS]

00:02:19   you're probably going to here tonight is [TS]

00:02:21   some some catharsis about a movie that [TS]

00:02:25   we don't like although you never know [TS]

00:02:27   Monty might say the things are there me [TS]

00:02:29   my blow our minds with things that he [TS]

00:02:30   likes about it i think it's unlikely [TS]

00:02:32   might not do it might have created some [TS]

00:02:34   other insane an unlikely backstory to [TS]

00:02:36   make it all better for himself so let me [TS]

00:02:38   introduce the the participants here [TS]

00:02:41   before we get started [TS]

00:02:43   skewered you heard Steve let's hi Steve [TS]

00:02:45   hi Jason you watch the movie can we [TS]

00:02:49   confirm that I i think i did alright i [TS]

00:02:52   saw you get started actually with her in [TS]

00:02:54   little pieces over yes I took me three [TS]

00:02:57   it took me three nights and it felt like [TS]

00:02:59   about 30 that's the worst Hanukkah ever [TS]

00:03:01   all right as i will as i will discuss [TS]

00:03:03   later it's a [TS]

00:03:04   I have difficulty remembering this film [TS]

00:03:07   so all right well do your best you can [TS]

00:03:10   make for you I'll do it again [TS]

00:03:11   alright i took extensive notes and until [TS]

00:03:13   they turn into just horrible filthy [TS]

00:03:15   scrolling is at the end of the list and [TS]

00:03:18   i should be able to work from the right [TS]

00:03:19   that it's it's never a good sign when [TS]

00:03:21   you start with detail the film criticism [TS]

00:03:23   notes and it ends in a suicide note [TS]

00:03:26   yeah never a good son Monty actually is [TS]

00:03:28   also here hi Monty by Jason good to have [TS]

00:03:31   you here and to be here and he required [TS]

00:03:34   me watching this may be there we go okay [TS]

00:03:37   Dan more in you I believe watch this [TS]

00:03:42   just moments ago flophouse style before [TS]

00:03:44   the recording of this podcast is that [TS]

00:03:46   correcting deed for the first time in 12 [TS]

00:03:49   years [TS]

00:03:49   wow that's good and they haven't seen it [TS]

00:03:52   since i saw it in the theater so thanks [TS]

00:03:54   for reminding me yeah thank you for your [TS]

00:03:56   commitment to the podcast is what i have [TS]

00:03:58   to say i am going to be committed at the [TS]

00:03:59   end of this podcast that may also be [TS]

00:04:01   true [TS]

00:04:02   serenity Caldwell I believe also joined [TS]

00:04:04   you for this fine squeak screaming right [TS]

00:04:06   before we begin recording hello [TS]

00:04:07   unfortunately yes hello Jason I always [TS]

00:04:11   watching with somebody [TS]

00:04:12   yeah I you know is I'd watch them [TS]

00:04:15   watching this movie when it came out in [TS]

00:04:18   2002 was I think a much better [TS]

00:04:20   experience for me and I'm really [TS]

00:04:22   watching it tonight but there was snark [TS]

00:04:24   involved tonight so it was a little bit [TS]

00:04:25   better [TS]

00:04:26   that's good and of course you wouldn't [TS]

00:04:28   miss one it's john siracusa hello i [TS]

00:04:31   guess i can add another data point to [TS]

00:04:33   this experiment and say that I to took [TS]

00:04:35   three separate occasions to make it [TS]

00:04:37   through this movie took two for me I i [TS]

00:04:40   had to break right I rip the band-aid [TS]

00:04:42   off and did in one good job [TS]

00:04:44   well okay so I i have a little bit of a [TS]

00:04:49   synopsis here in my notes that like I [TS]

00:04:51   said trails off into sadness at the end [TS]

00:04:53   or trails often incoherence at the end [TS]

00:04:55   it starts really with sadness and goes [TS]

00:04:56   from there [TS]

00:04:57   but before I do I would like to ask if [TS]

00:04:59   anybody particularly John Syracuse has [TS]

00:05:01   any opening remarks as we often like to [TS]

00:05:04   do especially for star wars episodes [TS]

00:05:05   John do you have any room works i do [TS]

00:05:08   have a very brief opening statement [TS]

00:05:09   right I've heard the dan moore and also [TS]

00:05:11   as well as well so he can go after me if [TS]

00:05:13   you would like I don't already sent them [TS]

00:05:15   very generous thank you job [TS]

00:05:17   alright so i'm going to start with a [TS]

00:05:20   brief review of my theory of the meta [TS]

00:05:23   failure of the Star Wars prequels this [TS]

00:05:25   is a repeat of anyone who has listened [TS]

00:05:27   to the Phantom Menace episode this is [TS]

00:05:29   just a quick summary of that so to recap [TS]

00:05:31   that the reason these movies exist is to [TS]

00:05:34   explain how Luke's father became Darth [TS]

00:05:37   Vader because that's what we all want to [TS]

00:05:38   know after seeing the first three movies [TS]

00:05:39   and episode 1 didn't really do much in [TS]

00:05:43   that regard to contribute to the effort [TS]

00:05:44   towards my concern [TS]

00:05:46   yeah it's my contention that the entire [TS]

00:05:48   prequels the whole totally failed to [TS]

00:05:50   achieve this goal and this is aside from [TS]

00:05:52   their failings as an individual movie so [TS]

00:05:54   that's the big bang theory but all that [TS]

00:05:56   said going into episode 2 in 2002 i was [TS]

00:06:00   actually cautiously optimistic for a [TS]

00:06:02   couple of reasons about the second movie [TS]

00:06:04   first I knew that Anakin will be played [TS]

00:06:07   by different older and presumably better [TS]

00:06:09   actor so thumbs up on that different [TS]

00:06:12   second so much for presuming a sensible [TS]

00:06:14   episode 2 was rumored to be darker than [TS]

00:06:16   episode 1 and I figured she's after all [TS]

00:06:18   that jar stuff darker has got to be [TS]

00:06:20   better right at the best action scene in [TS]

00:06:23   episode one was the lightsaber battle at [TS]

00:06:25   the end and episode to promise to have [TS]

00:06:27   more lightsaber battles Anna I sale this [TS]

00:06:31   basically to explain that I wouldn't [TS]

00:06:32   episode 2 I didn't go into a determined [TS]

00:06:34   to hate it i went in thinking you could [TS]

00:06:37   still turn this thing around [TS]

00:06:38   I knew it was a three-episode trilogy [TS]

00:06:41   with the first one was crummy but maybe [TS]

00:06:44   to win three will be better so I had no [TS]

00:06:47   preconceived notions I was willing to [TS]

00:06:49   believe at this point and I think the [TS]

00:06:51   rest of the podcast will talk about how [TS]

00:06:53   my hopes were dashed alright good table [TS]

00:06:59   setting their damn or would you like [TS]

00:07:00   anything I i just had a short short list [TS]

00:07:04   which includes let's see robots [TS]

00:07:06   spaceships lightsabers political [TS]

00:07:11   intrigue it elicits love affairs clones [TS]

00:07:16   and only George Lucas could take all of [TS]

00:07:19   these things put them in a single movie [TS]

00:07:21   and make it so boring but you want to [TS]

00:07:24   fall asleep or else your list didn't [TS]

00:07:26   have death-sticks on it was that just an [TS]

00:07:28   oversight [TS]

00:07:29   no death-sticks reading challenge cuts [TS]

00:07:31   what's the opposite of political [TS]

00:07:33   intrigue is it political out tree good [TS]

00:07:36   because that's what this movie had it [TS]

00:07:38   yeah well we can start with the kraal [TS]

00:07:41   can't leave because I quality where I [TS]

00:07:43   was indicative yeah you have divided [TS]

00:07:45   before you get there i have a refocusing [TS]

00:07:47   statement myself oh my goodness yes this [TS]

00:07:49   is this is as exciting as the Imperial [TS]

00:07:52   Senate passing resolutions that are [TS]

00:07:54   nominated by George are being opening [TS]

00:07:56   statement the podcast don't get too [TS]

00:07:57   excited [TS]

00:07:58   dan yield the floor to refer know I know [TS]

00:08:00   I i just wanted to that was sort of my [TS]

00:08:02   nice little bitty rabbit but i agree [TS]

00:08:04   with everything my esteemed colleague [TS]

00:08:06   from siracusa that Ramu ok Steve you may [TS]

00:08:11   go ahead [TS]

00:08:12   this is more really the form of a [TS]

00:08:13   disclaimer I this is absolutely true [TS]

00:08:16   when I watched this movie it was several [TS]

00:08:19   years after everybody else had already [TS]

00:08:20   seen it and trashed it and I've seen [TS]

00:08:22   episode 1 and thought okay well that's [TS]

00:08:23   some crap but it you know it's semi [TS]

00:08:26   entertaining and so I sat down to watch [TS]

00:08:29   this I was on i think i was on a trip [TS]

00:08:31   somewhere on for business sat down to [TS]

00:08:33   the laptop watched it you know got [TS]

00:08:36   through it and then a week later I was [TS]

00:08:38   somewhere else in another hotel and I [TS]

00:08:40   looked at the DVD and i realized i watch [TS]

00:08:43   this week ago and I have absolutely no [TS]

00:08:46   recollection of anything that happened [TS]

00:08:48   in this film that is absolutely true [TS]

00:08:50   two-and-a-half hours of my life were [TS]

00:08:52   just gone [TS]

00:08:54   I knew something must have happened [TS]

00:08:55   during that time I had sort of a vague [TS]

00:08:57   sense that there had been explosions and [TS]

00:09:00   and sand but the specific I was a lot [TS]

00:09:02   like a cup party back in college that I [TS]

00:09:05   was thinking not unlike that at all [TS]

00:09:06   except not only so far from the roof [TS]

00:09:08   like fell on your head as you exited the [TS]

00:09:11   theater and yes that might well yeah it [TS]

00:09:13   was really like tiles were falling on my [TS]

00:09:15   head throughout the entire viewing some [TS]

00:09:18   of us could only wish that I'll had [TS]

00:09:19   following months after this movie idea I [TS]

00:09:22   don't know if I would take a concussion [TS]

00:09:24   normally but it's looking good this is [TS]

00:09:27   graham ok let's start with the crawl and [TS]

00:09:28   when do you have any comments about the [TS]

00:09:30   crawl i only have a couple notes there [TS]

00:09:31   so yeah my my big note about the crawl [TS]

00:09:34   is the only exciting words in that [TS]

00:09:37   entire thing or army which they also i [TS]

00:09:41   think happened to be both [TS]

00:09:42   folded and everything else there Bob [TS]

00:09:45   love oh blah blah blah limited Jedi [TS]

00:09:48   numbers [TS]

00:09:49   blah blah blah zenit my favorite part is [TS]

00:09:52   blah blah blah [TS]

00:09:53   Count Dooku yeah blah blah i would like [TS]

00:09:56   is that you know when there's nothing [TS]

00:09:57   better than then introducing a pivotal [TS]

00:10:00   character being performed by a legendary [TS]

00:10:03   actor by mentioning him as if you know [TS]

00:10:07   who he is in the crawl involving [TS]

00:10:09   bureaucracy and then not reply with your [TS]

00:10:13   two hours [TS]

00:10:14   well and then naming him something like [TS]

00:10:16   Count Dooku so did anybody ever has [TS]

00:10:19   anyone ever seen rocky doodle because I [TS]

00:10:21   feel like there's a character named like [TS]

00:10:24   Count Dooku or count Dukas or something [TS]

00:10:26   like that and that is always stuck with [TS]

00:10:28   me [TS]

00:10:28   it's the nickname for receives cat one [TS]

00:10:31   Wanda cool tool towards cools my note on [TS]

00:10:38   the crawl was that I was excited up [TS]

00:10:39   until the phrase a separatist movement [TS]

00:10:42   which is for a way to describe a [TS]

00:10:45   rebellion they could come up yes [TS]

00:10:47   yeah like going in with expectations of [TS]

00:10:49   like oh this the second one could be [TS]

00:10:50   better you gotta hand is George Lucas he [TS]

00:10:52   wasted absolutely no time and [TS]

00:10:54   immediately dissuading me from the [TS]

00:10:56   notion that this movie busy going to be [TS]

00:10:58   different and I like the first sentences [TS]

00:11:01   there is unrest and the Galactic Senate [TS]

00:11:04   it's like a lot but not even a sentence [TS]

00:11:07   I don't even get a sentence to think [TS]

00:11:09   that maybe this was going to be [TS]

00:11:10   different you go right for the Senate it [TS]

00:11:11   turns out there's food poisoning even [TS]

00:11:13   the universe is in peril [TS]

00:11:14   there was no mention of taxation or [TS]

00:11:16   trade routes this time [TS]

00:11:17   yeah so but senators would like there is [TS]

00:11:20   unrest is fine in the Galactic now don't [TS]

00:11:23   say it's okay I think we're supposed to [TS]

00:11:26   be excited when the Trade Federation [TS]

00:11:27   guys show up near the end of the movie [TS]

00:11:29   like Georgia has no idea what people are [TS]

00:11:32   nostalgic for at all no yes new can [TS]

00:11:35   raise those guys [TS]

00:11:36   oh I hate those guys I just like that [TS]

00:11:38   George Lucas looked at the first movie [TS]

00:11:40   Ghost that's pretty low bar at i think i [TS]

00:11:42   can get under that we're not playing a [TS]

00:11:45   game of window darn it [TS]

00:11:46   the separatist movement i mean this is [TS]

00:11:49   this is the first off with it with the [TS]

00:11:51   crawl is supposed to do is like get you [TS]

00:11:52   excited about what's to what's to come [TS]

00:11:54   and instead [TS]

00:11:56   it's like trying to fill in lots of [TS]

00:11:58   stuff that that is the trajectory that [TS]

00:12:00   this film is trying to take us on except [TS]

00:12:02   it's starting [TS]

00:12:03   believe it or not it's starting later [TS]

00:12:05   than it would have liked to eight get it [TS]

00:12:07   seems to me that another hour of [TS]

00:12:08   separatists arguing for a partition of [TS]

00:12:12   the Empire in the Senate is a really [TS]

00:12:14   well George Lucas wants to talk about [TS]

00:12:15   here because ultimately is this not [TS]

00:12:17   right that this this story is a [TS]

00:12:19   slow-motion car crash but it really is [TS]

00:12:21   just like hey what if there were lots of [TS]

00:12:23   political imaginations behind it seems [TS]

00:12:25   that led to a dictatorship [TS]

00:12:27   okay I get it but um it's not [TS]

00:12:30   interesting [TS]

00:12:31   it's it's a story that has happened in [TS]

00:12:34   history and you could tell it but it's [TS]

00:12:37   not interesting and in the count dooku [TS]

00:12:39   thing [TS]

00:12:40   introducing him in the crawl you know [TS]

00:12:41   it's just it just seems like a waste [TS]

00:12:43   plus it's never clear later in the movie [TS]

00:12:45   about the whole separatist movement and [TS]

00:12:48   why they exist other than as a ploy [TS]

00:12:50   churches what are they doing [TS]

00:12:52   who are they why do they want to have a [TS]

00:12:54   droid army [TS]

00:12:56   why is the separatist movement made up [TS]

00:12:57   entirely of businessmen except as a spin [TS]

00:13:00   there's also that robot guy who they're [TS]

00:13:02   at their robot business with the knobs [TS]

00:13:05   on robot businesses with a with a night [TS]

00:13:07   of the talking speaking spell from the [TS]

00:13:09   tango yeah it's kind of like the father [TS]

00:13:12   on the meters in I feel confident saying [TS]

00:13:14   that this movie might have been better [TS]

00:13:16   if the first two hours had been a crawl [TS]

00:13:18   then there's like half an hour of like [TS]

00:13:20   action at the end [TS]

00:13:22   yeah that's how it's very it's certainly [TS]

00:13:24   crawled i'll get there there are people [TS]

00:13:26   who can make interesting movies and [TS]

00:13:29   television shows out of political [TS]

00:13:31   machinations but you have to kind of go [TS]

00:13:34   the game of thrones route if you want to [TS]

00:13:36   do that [TS]

00:13:37   like who's yeah I guess lots of nudity [TS]

00:13:41   is beyond all there's a fair amount of [TS]

00:13:42   like a hinted duty in this movie anyways [TS]

00:13:45   address buddy I'm there is midriff there [TS]

00:13:48   is major and claws but no I mean there [TS]

00:13:52   are hints that in this terrible train [TS]

00:13:56   wreck of a movie there could have been [TS]

00:13:57   something cool like the the lego the [TS]

00:14:02   lego star wars version of this movie is [TS]

00:14:03   perfectly fine right [TS]

00:14:05   in fact i had i advise you to watch that [TS]

00:14:07   instead of this [TS]

00:14:09   I don't know about the lego star wars [TS]

00:14:12   version of looking for I've never played [TS]

00:14:13   the lego star wars yells I was thinking [TS]

00:14:16   about that while watching this game and [TS]

00:14:17   while watching pirates of the caribbean [TS]

00:14:19   to that I watched yesterday there's [TS]

00:14:20   lousy seems that I feel more charitable [TS]

00:14:23   towards because I enjoyed playing a LEGO [TS]

00:14:26   version it's a LEGO version was much [TS]

00:14:29   much much better with the LEGO version [TS]

00:14:30   is probably don't have terrible dialogue [TS]

00:14:32   alright so we all made it through the [TS]

00:14:33   crow we all survived i think all of the [TS]

00:14:36   crawl is my first experience of going [TS]

00:14:38   like is the the kraal they go through [TS]

00:14:40   the car almost like you said it's [TS]

00:14:41   setting you up for like the first scene [TS]

00:14:42   of the movie and as I'm watching the [TS]

00:14:44   crawl and being disgusted by whatever I [TS]

00:14:46   go you know what I have no recollection [TS]

00:14:48   of what they were trying to set up like [TS]

00:14:51   you know that they're trying to set up [TS]

00:14:53   something the scene is when economic [TS]

00:14:56   dollar the senator whatever comes on the [TS]

00:14:57   planet in her thing and and gets bombed [TS]

00:14:59   right and what they were trying to set [TS]

00:15:01   up there was supposed to be this vote [TS]

00:15:03   and she was coming there to vote on and [TS]

00:15:04   I had no recollection of that like boys [TS]

00:15:06   I can't remember the promise of the [TS]

00:15:07   first scene [TS]

00:15:08   yeah this is this is not gonna be good [TS]

00:15:09   and I like as I kept watching the movie [TS]

00:15:12   i'm like it's just all with that alien [TS]

00:15:14   guy with the forearms like seriously I [TS]

00:15:16   had talked to some sort of end-user [TS]

00:15:18   array that comes to have this move it [TS]

00:15:19   makes you forget everything about it [TS]

00:15:21   maybe it's like your brain protecting [TS]

00:15:22   itself [TS]

00:15:23   yeah it's it's like what happens when [TS]

00:15:24   you're when you're reading something [TS]

00:15:26   really boring and you suddenly realize [TS]

00:15:28   that you stopped actually processing the [TS]

00:15:29   word several paragraphs ago [TS]

00:15:31   you're thinking about something more [TS]

00:15:32   interesting yeah yeah speeders and [TS]

00:15:34   clones are flying around and stupid [TS]

00:15:36   things are being said poorly but your [TS]

00:15:37   mind just checks itself out i just like [TS]

00:15:39   even even focusing on [TS]

00:15:41   I mean like Amidala that's a good point [TS]

00:15:43   if the kraal was that that you know [TS]

00:15:46   senator Amidala former formerly queen is [TS]

00:15:50   on a desperate mission to save the the [TS]

00:15:53   Empire from falling apart but she's [TS]

00:15:55   under threat and has come here under [TS]

00:15:57   heavy guard and try to make it like [TS]

00:15:58   right like it's we missed a cliffhanger [TS]

00:16:00   of an exciting thirties movie serial [TS]

00:16:03   remember last time on star where yet her [TS]

00:16:07   landing there and having the thing blow [TS]

00:16:09   up and all that would be like oh you [TS]

00:16:10   know what mission was she on and then we [TS]

00:16:12   learned but instead it's like you know [TS]

00:16:14   her mission is one little piece in this [TS]

00:16:16   much bigger puzzle which may be true [TS]

00:16:18   plot-wise but if you know will give us [TS]

00:16:20   something we remember her vaguely from [TS]

00:16:22   the last [TS]

00:16:22   we can give can we hang something on [TS]

00:16:25   that and then the calls are awkward at [TS]

00:16:27   all the other movies as well but if you [TS]

00:16:29   could sum up in like a sentence like [TS]

00:16:31   empires like bad guys expecting the good [TS]

00:16:34   guys good guys are hiding on snow planet [TS]

00:16:35   like it and the next one is I that's are [TS]

00:16:38   good guys trying to go get on soul he [TS]

00:16:40   was frozen and the last movie will you [TS]

00:16:42   notice the first the original trilogy [TS]

00:16:44   the kraal always centers around the main [TS]

00:16:48   characters like there's some big picture [TS]

00:16:49   stuff but it always ends or begins with [TS]

00:16:53   a main character i will these lies the [TS]

00:16:55   rub because there is no matter what yeah [TS]

00:16:57   there's no main character any the main [TS]

00:17:00   characters of the prequels of a whole [TS]

00:17:02   but especially episode 2 is the Galactic [TS]

00:17:06   Senate and the Jedi Order there's no [TS]

00:17:08   like we try they try and narrow it a bit [TS]

00:17:11   like oh we should care about Anakin and [TS]

00:17:13   obi-wan and Amidala and also Yoda and [TS]

00:17:16   also the Jedi Council and also maybe [TS]

00:17:18   charger like there's no centering force [TS]

00:17:21   to any of this movie it's just a lot of [TS]

00:17:24   tiny little vignettes that are supposed [TS]

00:17:26   to string together and you're not quite [TS]

00:17:28   sure how they all do which is [TS]

00:17:30   inexcusable because again we're supposed [TS]

00:17:32   to be learning ionic intensity darth [TS]

00:17:34   vader and so you could write off the [TS]

00:17:35   first movie but say surely now when we [TS]

00:17:37   have an adult actor playing Anakin [TS]

00:17:39   surely the focus will be on him how [TS]

00:17:41   could it not be on him that's what these [TS]

00:17:42   movies are about was like actually he's [TS]

00:17:44   just kind of hanging around annoys you [TS]

00:17:45   to illustrate this here's how have sowed [TS]

00:17:47   fours crawl ends pursued by the Empire [TS]

00:17:51   sinister agents Princess Leia races home [TS]

00:17:53   about her starship custodian of the [TS]

00:17:55   stolen plans that can save her people [TS]

00:17:56   restore freedom to the galaxy and they [TS]

00:17:58   cut from that to Princess Leia racing [TS]

00:18:01   home aboard her starship with the stolen [TS]

00:18:02   plans it flows in and tells you where [TS]

00:18:05   you are supposed to this where I don't [TS]

00:18:07   even remember how even the just the [TS]

00:18:09   words are more days remember Army of the [TS]

00:18:11   Republic yeah [TS]

00:18:13   Count Dooku even count dooku doesn't get [TS]

00:18:16   caps no no just the army of the republic [TS]

00:18:19   and see if I can pull us past the call [TS]

00:18:22   here after the crawl [TS]

00:18:24   they you know they show the ship flying [TS]

00:18:26   in yeah and everything and I was struck [TS]

00:18:28   by like how the the CG and the opening [TS]

00:18:32   scene you know they cut from that like [TS]

00:18:34   the people walking out of the ship in [TS]

00:18:35   line [TS]

00:18:36   platform the CG and the audio in the [TS]

00:18:38   opening scene looks better than the [TS]

00:18:39   first live-action shot and that's [TS]

00:18:41   something I would find myself thinking [TS]

00:18:42   throughout this entire movie that the cg [TS]

00:18:44   although it is a look [TS]

00:18:45   it hasn't aged all that well you can see [TS]

00:18:46   kind of like the rough edges invariably [TS]

00:18:49   looks better to me than the live action [TS]

00:18:51   shots and I think the live action shots [TS]

00:18:53   are aging works so that the CD was like [TS]

00:18:55   oh this could be cool that's nice [TS]

00:18:56   visuals and I cut to a bunch of people [TS]

00:18:58   walking around on a green screen thing [TS]

00:18:59   I'm like oh yeah i forgot those with [TS]

00:19:00   this movement it's not even the lights [TS]

00:19:02   that are terrible to the compositing [TS]

00:19:04   right like exactly what they're putting [TS]

00:19:05   contrast with the cgi she couldn't [TS]

00:19:07   figure out how to time it [TS]

00:19:09   it's that the people never look like [TS]

00:19:10   they're in the scene with whatever is [TS]

00:19:12   flapping around a matter understand why [TS]

00:19:14   because that like if anyone would have [TS]

00:19:16   the technology to integrate them like [TS]

00:19:18   the cg itself is very well done it's [TS]

00:19:20   just I think there's something off about [TS]

00:19:22   it and it you know it makes me wish the [TS]

00:19:25   entire movie with CG like when the ship [TS]

00:19:26   goes by I was thinking boy ben burtt [TS]

00:19:28   still makes the best engine noise and [TS]

00:19:29   then we cut to a bunch of people walking [TS]

00:19:31   around the green screen like uh well on [TS]

00:19:33   the other hand there are places where [TS]

00:19:34   the CG is really really bad like I think [TS]

00:19:37   on Kamino in particular the Camino and [TS]

00:19:39   look ridiculous anytime you're gonna go [TS]

00:19:42   two characters in this film they are [TS]

00:19:45   inevitably going to look worse because [TS]

00:19:46   we have to remember too that this is [TS]

00:19:48   2002 right this is pre monsters inc pre [TS]

00:19:51   hair revolutions in CG and 3d pre proper [TS]

00:19:56   lighting engineering so they're still [TS]

00:19:59   dealing with I can't remember the exact [TS]

00:20:01   title term with it but they they [TS]

00:20:03   basically are dealing with a much [TS]

00:20:04   reduced kind of like a 256-color [TS]

00:20:07   lighting spectrum to borrow like it [TS]

00:20:10   they're dealing like with with the gif [TS]

00:20:11   of CGI right now before they haven't [TS]

00:20:14   gotten to like jpeg ER SVG maybe they [TS]

00:20:17   maybe should've dealt with that by I [TS]

00:20:19   don't know some practical effects [TS]

00:20:21   hey you would think but I they want Yoda [TS]

00:20:23   jumping around [TS]

00:20:24   I have a note later that says the [TS]

00:20:25   practical effects that were worse than [TS]

00:20:27   both the CD and live actors at one point [TS]

00:20:29   that it's rather have Anakin and and pad [TS]

00:20:32   me getting out of like that stupid [TS]

00:20:33   gondola looking thing later in the movie [TS]

00:20:35   and that gondola thing looks to me like [TS]

00:20:38   someone made a CG model and then someone [TS]

00:20:42   looked at the CG model and made a [TS]

00:20:44   real-life wooden representation of it [TS]

00:20:46   and then they got out of the wooden [TS]

00:20:47   thing it's like then the [TS]

00:20:49   movie made from the novelization of the [TS]

00:20:50   you-know-what yeah it's a little less [TS]

00:20:52   because in the workflow it's it's two [TS]

00:20:54   cycles through the end it just I was [TS]

00:20:56   like that wooden boat is the worst thing [TS]

00:20:57   I've ever seen in a movie [TS]

00:20:59   it just looks dumb it looks fake it [TS]

00:21:01   doesn't look like anything I've ever [TS]

00:21:02   want to see and I was begging for it to [TS]

00:21:04   be done in badlo red cg with bad [TS]

00:21:06   lighting on it like that would have been [TS]

00:21:07   a step up at least it goes away quickly [TS]

00:21:09   and like they're CGI diner owner who's [TS]

00:21:11   in the middle of the scrum forever [TS]

00:21:14   well look we get there we'll get there i [TS]

00:21:16   wanna i want to mention want to drag at [TS]

00:21:17   least the so there's an assassination [TS]

00:21:19   attempt after an entire movie of a Padre [TS]

00:21:23   having did doubles that I couldn't tell [TS]

00:21:26   apart even though it was keira knightley [TS]

00:21:27   and not Natalie Portman but that you can [TS]

00:21:29   listen to our episode 1 episodes for [TS]

00:21:30   that and nothing really happens except [TS]

00:21:33   there's a switcheroo at some point here [TS]

00:21:35   in the very first scene it's like that's [TS]

00:21:36   why she's got a double because her [TS]

00:21:38   double is horribly killed in an [TS]

00:21:39   assassination attempt while Padma is [TS]

00:21:41   riding in the little like side ship and [TS]

00:21:45   actually doesn't look like her [TS]

00:21:46   yeah this double actually looks more [TS]

00:21:47   like jimmy smits double she says I've I [TS]

00:21:51   failed you senator don't know how did [TS]

00:21:53   not recognize exactly what you're there [TS]

00:21:55   for you right [TS]

00:21:56   she might have failed her by telling not [TS]

00:21:57   telling her to get the hell off the [TS]

00:21:59   platform that wasn't she supposed [TS]

00:22:00   they're very clearly herself not really [TS]

00:22:03   in a disguise she's taking off for [TS]

00:22:04   disguise and she's just standing there [TS]

00:22:05   right where they just killed what they [TS]

00:22:07   thought was hurt like hell oh and she's [TS]

00:22:09   there for a very long time and this [TS]

00:22:11   scene all MC and follows it also blows [TS]

00:22:13   me away because it makes the Jedi seem [TS]

00:22:14   completely clueless because they [TS]

00:22:16   actually say well as far as we can tell [TS]

00:22:18   these are some disgruntled spice miners [TS]

00:22:20   back on Abu really angry spice miners [TS]

00:22:23   why we have you clear everything going [TS]

00:22:27   course and it would be so much easier to [TS]

00:22:29   bum you like in space and at this point [TS]

00:22:31   I started writing lines of dialogue and [TS]

00:22:33   I find a lot of my notes from episode to [TS]

00:22:34   our lines of dialogue just because i was [TS]

00:22:36   just my mind bother them in that [TS]

00:22:38   particular scene talking about the spice [TS]

00:22:40   miners and here's here's padme's lines i [TS]

00:22:42   love how she doesn't use contractions [TS]

00:22:43   because that shows she's formulas is [TS]

00:22:45   good we should just read the dialogue of [TS]

00:22:46   this movie as a podcast tonight [TS]

00:22:48   directions or instructions hairline [TS]

00:22:50   do you have any idea who's behind this [TS]

00:22:52   attack is a contraction at least and [TS]

00:22:54   then they say the spice mine things and [TS]

00:22:56   then she says I think that can Dooku was [TS]

00:22:57   behind it [TS]

00:22:58   okay great writing their own idea I [TS]

00:23:02   think that I think that is countered [TS]

00:23:03   that that is literally every line here [TS]

00:23:05   there's no subtext [TS]

00:23:07   yes again again with the text versus [TS]

00:23:09   subtext even the sentence construction [TS]

00:23:11   doesn't vary here almost I was counting [TS]

00:23:12   the number of lines that are like I verb [TS]

00:23:15   blank like I verb now I verb down I verb [TS]

00:23:18   adjective i feel like it's almost every [TS]

00:23:21   sentence for a period of maybe 15-20 [TS]

00:23:23   minutes starts with every character [TS]

00:23:24   saying I and only that but they're [TS]

00:23:26   declarative sentences they're like I [TS]

00:23:28   feel angry and upset yeah it's like oh [TS]

00:23:31   you Europe the equivalent of pseudocode [TS]

00:23:33   of yours in pseudocode you're not [TS]

00:23:34   writing the actual computer code you [TS]

00:23:36   want to do something just kind of [TS]

00:23:37   sketching that vaguely ideas you know [TS]

00:23:39   they're happening in Apple's behind [TS]

00:23:41   andria and and they just they just took [TS]

00:23:43   the pseudocode and I said but just have [TS]

00:23:44   the people say that [TS]

00:23:45   so you're thinking that maybe Lucas [TS]

00:23:47   intended to go back into a second draft [TS]

00:23:49   at some point all the George George [TS]

00:23:51   these dialogues in brackets what does [TS]

00:23:53   that mean why is it in brackets it's [TS]

00:23:54   already headed to it later he was gonna [TS]

00:23:56   give it to a writer and then someone to [TS]

00:23:57   write the script does what he had it [TS]

00:24:00   they had a writer [TS]

00:24:01   they had a second writer on inhales [TS]

00:24:02   right the great work with him on yahoo [TS]

00:24:04   basically was like gasps sounds great [TS]

00:24:06   George yeah I don't do much here let me [TS]

00:24:08   do a couple typos corrections i'll just [TS]

00:24:11   run spell check on it will be good [TS]

00:24:12   we've got great actors like natalie [TS]

00:24:14   portman you and mcgregor don't have seen [TS]

00:24:17   did you not see episode 1i think the [TS]

00:24:20   Count Dooku is behind it could not be in [TS]

00:24:22   any other movie have you ever heard like [TS]

00:24:24   in turn i think that blank is behind it [TS]

00:24:26   like you can't say that in a movie you [TS]

00:24:28   would say like Count Dooku or it must be [TS]

00:24:29   Count Dooku somewhat like even those are [TS]

00:24:31   clichés but something anything just [TS]

00:24:33   throw me a bone but even those would [TS]

00:24:34   sound yet even those would be more [TS]

00:24:36   sonnets and the stupid I mean it sounds [TS]

00:24:39   like it was written by a third grader [TS]

00:24:41   really a line featuring Count Dooku [TS]

00:24:44   sounds juvenile that the dialogue in the [TS]

00:24:47   original Star Wars there's a lot of [TS]

00:24:48   cliche dialogue that sounds like [TS]

00:24:51   something out of a cereal right it's you [TS]

00:24:54   know I sure did you sell it [TS]

00:24:56   yeah with with all the all the all the [TS]

00:24:58   stuff on the Death Star with leia and [TS]

00:24:59   all that but it's it is and it's a [TS]

00:25:01   reference and it snowing here it's not [TS]

00:25:03   like campy or over-the-top it's [TS]

00:25:06   non-existent it's just flat it's a [TS]

00:25:08   blizzard gates and it's I really think [TS]

00:25:10   it's more the delivery than the dialogue [TS]

00:25:12   like [TS]

00:25:12   well I was just gonna say what what is [TS]

00:25:15   it what is it [TS]

00:25:15   how do you believe that dialogue well [TS]

00:25:17   because we agree the delivery is [TS]

00:25:19   terrible and we create the lines a [TS]

00:25:20   terrible but how do you apportion the [TS]

00:25:21   blame [TS]

00:25:22   well I think it's due Co if he's behind [TS]

00:25:24   the script and I mean it depends you can [TS]

00:25:27   you if you can produce this script in a [TS]

00:25:30   way where you can make it actually sound [TS]

00:25:32   like rational dialogue then it's the [TS]

00:25:35   delivery but I don't think that's [TS]

00:25:37   actually possible i don't know i think [TS]

00:25:38   no matter who you put in those roles [TS]

00:25:40   this is going to sound terrible because [TS]

00:25:43   it will repel the guy who wrote the [TS]

00:25:44   script also directed these people and I [TS]

00:25:46   think the apportionment doesn't really [TS]

00:25:48   matter [TS]

00:25:48   oh yeah atlantis on one person i'm just [TS]

00:25:50   saying like because there are a lot of [TS]

00:25:51   terrible lines in the original trilogy [TS]

00:25:52   and and you know great actors managed to [TS]

00:25:55   sell them in hindsight but like I don't [TS]

00:25:58   like another thing that I think could [TS]

00:25:59   not be made better is when obi-wan and [TS]

00:26:01   Anakin are coming up in the elevator and [TS]

00:26:02   trying to share that tale about remember [TS]

00:26:04   when I thought gundarks pit like it's [TS]

00:26:06   you know what that seen this supposed to [TS]

00:26:08   do is supposed to show us that they're [TS]

00:26:09   these guys had some wacky adventures [TS]

00:26:11   together and they're bonding fell into [TS]

00:26:12   that nightmare master and then we pause [TS]

00:26:15   for one breath and then laugh because [TS]

00:26:17   remember and everyone says oh start to [TS]

00:26:21   restrained in this film at least that [TS]

00:26:24   was that keeps on giving my impression [TS]

00:26:25   like you get Padme you get Anakin and [TS]

00:26:29   obi-wan in that elevator scene where [TS]

00:26:32   despite the fact that they have this [TS]

00:26:34   somewhat casual dialogue and it's one of [TS]

00:26:36   the few instances of casual dialogue [TS]

00:26:38   they have they are both so it's like [TS]

00:26:41   there's a wall between them and for all [TS]

00:26:43   we know they could have recorded their [TS]

00:26:45   dialogue and their appearances [TS]

00:26:47   separately thanks to the magic of CGI [TS]

00:26:49   Harrison Ford does more acting with one [TS]

00:26:52   lean it's possible that hayden [TS]

00:26:53   christensen is entirely [TS]

00:26:54   computer-generated time to take a brief [TS]

00:26:56   break so that i can thank ausable for [TS]

00:28:00   standalone novel narrated by Luke [TS]

00:28:01   Daniels available unabridged Ramez nom [TS]

00:28:05   he's a sci-fi writer he also writes [TS]

00:28:06   nonfiction super nice guy and it's a [TS]

00:28:09   really good book about a near-future [TS]

00:28:12   experience where people have learned to [TS]

00:28:15   hack the human brain and install an [TS]

00:28:19   operating system that runs on and around [TS]

00:28:22   your own neurons and gives people the [TS]

00:28:24   ability to tap into the power of their [TS]

00:28:26   minds and connect to other people's [TS]

00:28:28   minds really really interesting book i [TS]

00:28:31   was going to say mind-expanding but [TS]

00:28:33   that's sort of what the books about to [TS]

00:28:35   anyway really smart near future idea of [TS]

00:28:38   augmented humanity i think it uh I think [TS]

00:28:41   it's really worth your time it's [TS]

00:28:42   available unabridged on audible and I [TS]

00:28:54   kick off your free trial go to audible [TS]

00:28:56   podcast.com slash in comfortable and [TS]

00:28:59   thanks to audible for its support of the [TS]

00:29:01   incomparable the Jedi also i have to say [TS]

00:29:05   i couldn't imagine that the Jedi that [TS]

00:29:09   being a Jedi Master a Jedi Knight would [TS]

00:29:12   be boring but there's a piece of [TS]

00:29:14   dialogue that really kills me early on [TS]

00:29:16   here where they mentioned that they that [TS]

00:29:19   obi-wan can take care of her and watch [TS]

00:29:21   her [TS]

00:29:21   he's just back from from a border [TS]

00:29:24   dispute and I thought wow that is a [TS]

00:29:26   terrible job being a Jedi Knight because [TS]

00:29:28   apparently that's what they don't fight [TS]

00:29:30   with lightsabers use the Force [TS]

00:29:32   no you go again to the bureaucrats and [TS]

00:29:34   other boarders be I think the river [TS]

00:29:36   belongs to us no no [TS]

00:29:38   half the river belongs to us well let's [TS]

00:29:41   get the Jedi in here to deal with this [TS]

00:29:43   well Jason the Jedi are keepers of the [TS]

00:29:45   Peace not soldiers of course this is why [TS]

00:29:47   the Republic has fallen because they're [TS]

00:29:49   using their guys with awesome magic [TS]

00:29:51   powers and lightsabers to deal with [TS]

00:29:52   border disputes again meanwhile he's [TS]

00:29:55   rotting from the inside out touring [TS]

00:29:57   terrible job i'm just saying terrible [TS]

00:29:59   job by the way this movie brings you out [TS]

00:30:01   of this boredom is that all you think [TS]

00:30:03   you think you're bored now you think [TS]

00:30:04   that that scene where the elevator was [TS]

00:30:06   too boring that sounds like that sticks [TS]

00:30:07   up their butts just wait and again is [TS]

00:30:09   gonna meet Pat me and he's going to [TS]

00:30:10   start to work with his amazing like you [TS]

00:30:14   grow until yeah so have you grown more [TS]

00:30:17   beautiful I mean can we talk about the [TS]

00:30:19   age discrepancy a little bit because [TS]

00:30:20   this is very strange [TS]

00:30:21   this is apparently ten years after the [TS]

00:30:23   previous movie and and natalie portman [TS]

00:30:26   doesn't look any older but of course [TS]

00:30:27   Jake Lloyd is now hayden christensen [TS]

00:30:30   she'll howls what she wanted me for [TS]

00:30:31   great justice 1441 episode waters movie [TS]

00:30:36   yeah she's supposed to be 14 [TS]

00:30:38   ok she was elected as Queen at 40 she [TS]

00:30:40   wasn't the youngest queen ever elected [TS]

00:30:42   and how old is Anakin eight [TS]

00:30:45   yeah he's got easy and please so it's [TS]

00:30:49   legal it's weird I've got some real [TS]

00:30:50   issues with the whole concept of an [TS]

00:30:52   elected queen by the way [TS]

00:30:54   yeah i was looking that up on Wikipedia [TS]

00:30:57   while we were watching tonight because i [TS]

00:30:59   was very unclear about the whole [TS]

00:31:01   mechanics of that I'm like really you're [TS]

00:31:03   elected somebody who's 14 to govern your [TS]

00:31:06   planet she was in the Legislative youth [TS]

00:31:08   program [TS]

00:31:09   yes and then it's like the model un [TS]

00:31:11   never do I didn't know we elected people [TS]

00:31:14   from the model un to you know service [TS]

00:31:16   governor of us turns out nobody else on [TS]

00:31:18   the booze quote I have no problem with [TS]

00:31:19   this because I always viewed this as [TS]

00:31:21   being one of these really you know [TS]

00:31:22   bizarre things that grows up over over [TS]

00:31:25   thousands of years where there's [TS]

00:31:26   probably something about how we're going [TS]

00:31:28   to take our our most brilliant children [TS]

00:31:30   before their unsullied by political [TS]

00:31:31   connections and we're going to you know [TS]

00:31:33   elect them as the Queen the queen is is [TS]

00:31:36   is not a in in most times it's just a [TS]

00:31:38   ceremonial figure because the guy with [TS]

00:31:40   the guy with the goatee is back there [TS]

00:31:42   doing the actual work right okay you [TS]

00:31:44   gotta work all way to get that job yeah [TS]

00:31:46   course setup that makes sense if she's [TS]

00:31:48   she's clearly only a figurehead that [TS]

00:31:50   makes perfect sense but it appears [TS]

00:31:52   there's based on the first movie that [TS]

00:31:53   she is the one and only government [TS]

00:31:54   official on all of that was that was [TS]

00:31:56   extraordinary circumstances just so [TS]

00:31:58   later is one the one time it matter it's [TS]

00:32:00   so lazy for there to be a two-term limit [TS]

00:32:02   in the Constitution wait i should point [TS]

00:32:05   out there actually are other are there [TS]

00:32:07   are other levers of power in the form of [TS]

00:32:09   her various body doubles because they [TS]

00:32:12   apparently you have shots they couldn't [TS]

00:32:13   win there yet when they're the Queen [TS]

00:32:15   that's good because apparently they're [TS]

00:32:17   being asked to sacrifice themselves not [TS]

00:32:19   for the hereditary ruler but just for [TS]

00:32:21   the fourteen-year-old that was elected [TS]

00:32:23   for her first term as Queen it's serving [TS]

00:32:26   the duty of my planet all should have [TS]

00:32:28   been in the Legislative youth program [TS]

00:32:30   not the decoy youth program here we are [TS]

00:32:33   talking about political science again [TS]

00:32:35   what is this movie done to us [TS]

00:32:37   so going back to going back to the [TS]

00:32:40   relationship thing for a second [TS]

00:32:42   the age discrepancy I don't notice so [TS]

00:32:45   much in this film because they both look [TS]

00:32:47   very young and it's kind of like okay [TS]

00:32:49   whatever but watching this film 10 years [TS]

00:32:53   later I don't think I realized just how [TS]

00:32:57   freakishly creepy the first half of this [TS]

00:33:00   movie is in terms of lines and like I [TS]

00:33:04   don't know I mean I got AI mean I was [TS]

00:33:07   watching this movie with Dan and Dan had [TS]

00:33:08   to walk out of the room a couple times [TS]

00:33:10   because I was yelling at the television [TS]

00:33:12   and I'm not usually a person who's like [TS]

00:33:14   oh god that's you know that's really [TS]

00:33:17   disrespectful or that you know seems [TS]

00:33:19   like an invasion of a woman space but [TS]

00:33:21   like the first half of this movie is so [TS]

00:33:24   creepy [TS]

00:33:26   Anakin is such a creeper will always be [TS]

00:33:28   that little boy to me [TS]

00:33:29   imagines that thing just their creepier [TS]

00:33:32   Jason well no but that's not the creepy [TS]

00:33:34   part of the creepy part of the way he'll [TS]

00:33:35   ears at her he is the creepiest low [TS]

00:33:38   yeah you're leering smirk the she [TS]

00:33:41   doesn't like me watching her and no [TS]

00:33:44   it's so gross ya know this Merc the [TS]

00:33:47   smirk is the worst part makes her skin [TS]

00:33:49   crawl [TS]

00:33:50   it's so creepy you're exactly the way i [TS]

00:33:53   remember you in my dreams pocket also [TS]

00:33:56   write as h goes in for a kiss she does [TS]

00:33:58   not respond at all she's just staring [TS]

00:34:00   into the distance [TS]

00:34:02   well yeah but it's okay for him to be [TS]

00:34:04   creeper like I like when I was watching [TS]

00:34:05   twilight you know it's like it's ok if [TS]

00:34:07   he wants to be creepy because he doesn't [TS]

00:34:08   being a bad guy right [TS]

00:34:10   maybe he's creepy but that the center of [TS]

00:34:11   this movie is not so much that he's [TS]

00:34:13   creepy and annoying which I guess hurts [TS]

00:34:14   the movie if you wanted to be likable in [TS]

00:34:15   anyway because he's terrifying but that [TS]

00:34:18   the premise of this movie is that [TS]

00:34:20   respond yeah he responds to that I can't [TS]

00:34:23   imagine anything that Anakin said has me [TS]

00:34:25   presents being attractive to any woman [TS]

00:34:27   that ever and somehow because the script [TS]

00:34:31   because the script says oh she responses [TS]

00:34:33   like oh yes that's totally a turn-on [TS]

00:34:35   are you kidding me a turn-on been dying [TS]

00:34:38   a little each day since you came back [TS]

00:34:40   really not like everything everything he [TS]

00:34:44   does everything you know he whines about [TS]

00:34:45   obi-wan he's just full of complaints [TS]

00:34:48   seems like he's a loser he is an [TS]

00:34:50   annoying leering creepy loser and if she [TS]

00:34:53   taught him a lesson and laid him low and [TS]

00:34:55   had him realized that that he ki he [TS]

00:34:57   needed to treat her like a real person [TS]

00:34:59   that would be an interesting [TS]

00:34:59   relationship dynamic but no you're right [TS]

00:35:01   John basically what the lesson learned [TS]

00:35:04   here is be a totally creepy dude and [TS]

00:35:06   never give up being creepy and [TS]

00:35:08   eventually your creepiness will be [TS]

00:35:10   properly interpreted as love will come [TS]

00:35:12   around [TS]

00:35:12   yeah listen I cannot count the number of [TS]

00:35:14   times i've walked into a bar and shouted [TS]

00:35:16   they're like animals and i slaughtered [TS]

00:35:18   them like animals and totally got like [TS]

00:35:23   five phone numbers right this let's go [TS]

00:35:25   out let me talk to him the way you talk [TS]

00:35:27   to a child at one point when he's [TS]

00:35:28   whining about obi-wan pad me says them [TS]

00:35:30   that must be frustrating for you which [TS]

00:35:32   is how you talk to children to like sort [TS]

00:35:34   of acknowledge their emotions into like [TS]

00:35:36   you know that's she treats him like a [TS]

00:35:38   child because the acts like a child and [TS]

00:35:40   during this whole time she's totally [TS]

00:35:42   flat but again if you follow the pace of [TS]

00:35:43   the movie or like we're supposed to [TS]

00:35:45   believe that she is falling in love with [TS]

00:35:46   him it's like that the real howler lines [TS]

00:35:48   at the end of this movie about how about [TS]

00:35:50   how much in love they are like yeah that [TS]

00:35:53   the number of scenes exist where they [TS]

00:35:54   could theoretically have fallen in love [TS]

00:35:56   it doesn't happen [TS]

00:35:57   in those scenes but at a pace it out [TS]

00:35:59   like what ya their fortunes I mean [TS]

00:36:01   obviously they had time yeah they have [TS]

00:36:03   the scene we're talking a senior playing [TS]

00:36:05   a scene where they kiss and a scene [TS]

00:36:08   where they're married but the characters [TS]

00:36:11   don't fall in love during those see ya [TS]

00:36:13   if they have taken out even some of the [TS]

00:36:15   creepiness like there's that there's [TS]

00:36:18   that conversation they have skipping [TS]

00:36:20   ahead a little bit in the freighter when [TS]

00:36:21   they're heading home to Naboo on you [TS]

00:36:23   know unregistered transit and that scene [TS]

00:36:26   could have been very sweet and been like [TS]

00:36:28   oh this is a you know it's it's strange [TS]

00:36:31   how far we've come in 10 years and [TS]

00:36:33   instead know the last line of that scene [TS]

00:36:35   is your exactly how i remember you in my [TS]

00:36:38   dreams leering look Padme looks down at [TS]

00:36:41   her hands saying oh lord what have I [TS]

00:36:43   gotten myself into this guy is going to [TS]

00:36:45   be protecting me but she supposed to be [TS]

00:36:47   saying oh I'm overwhelmed by how much he [TS]

00:36:49   loves me and I find that such a bit i'm [TS]

00:36:51   attracted him incredibly no no you're [TS]

00:36:53   not but yet that's how that's how she's [TS]

00:36:54   supposed to be acting there that he's [TS]

00:36:56   winning her over with this well Jason's [TS]

00:36:58   point earlier i think what's interesting [TS]

00:36:59   is there's there could have been an [TS]

00:37:01   interesting dynamic again with this this [TS]

00:37:03   woman who was put in charge of an entire [TS]

00:37:05   you know planet when she was a small [TS]

00:37:06   child she was probably not interacting [TS]

00:37:08   with other like people her age like [TS]

00:37:11   again you could have done something [TS]

00:37:12   interesting with him or her being like [TS]

00:37:14   well she's been kind of sheltered you [TS]

00:37:15   know when she's maybe kind of damage [TS]

00:37:17   because she's had to do all this stuff [TS]

00:37:18   that's really beyond her years that but [TS]

00:37:21   no we don't go that way that too [TS]

00:37:25   emotionally damaged people and i would [TS]

00:37:27   think she seems so worldly that she [TS]

00:37:29   would issue has been everything that he [TS]

00:37:30   has to offer that she would find [TS]

00:37:32   interesting she ruled the planet she's a [TS]

00:37:33   senator she's traveling from planet to [TS]

00:37:35   planet he's like he's just been isolated [TS]

00:37:38   from his entire family apparently just [TS]

00:37:39   doing the Jedi thing or disputes hanging [TS]

00:37:42   out with everyone and arpit he would not [TS]

00:37:44   be interested in him in any way [TS]

00:37:47   yes so here's the thing i wanted to also [TS]

00:37:49   mention that's why I slowly try to drag [TS]

00:37:51   this forward that will have more time to [TS]

00:37:54   talk about this relationship I think as [TS]

00:37:56   we go in the scene before they the [TS]

00:37:59   centipede attack [TS]

00:38:01   there's a video game ever is a [TS]

00:38:03   conversation we're talking Jar Jar as [TS]

00:38:05   president they're all company and and [TS]

00:38:07   the thing that there's a fascinating [TS]

00:38:08   little shot that i wanted to mention we [TS]

00:38:11   pitches they have there's a pause in the [TS]

00:38:12   conversation and they cut to charge our [TS]

00:38:14   who sits there and doesn't do anything [TS]

00:38:16   and it goes for a couple seconds for its [TS]

00:38:19   charge are sitting there in their [TS]

00:38:20   silence and then they cut away and it's [TS]

00:38:23   just it's it's maybe the best shot in [TS]

00:38:25   the movie because i have no idea where [TS]

00:38:27   that shot is there other than hey its [TS]

00:38:30   charge our doctors here [TS]

00:38:31   the kid was charged are but it's not [TS]

00:38:33   like that with dialogue it's just silent [TS]

00:38:35   of Jar Jar like and there throughout [TS]

00:38:38   this movie there are some things that [TS]

00:38:39   seemed kind of questionable in terms of [TS]

00:38:41   just the competence of editing and [TS]

00:38:42   directing movie where they're cut away [TS]

00:38:44   so I'm like why is that cutaway there [TS]

00:38:46   but the charger moment is the best [TS]

00:38:48   alright time for our second sponsor [TS]

00:38:50   break it's returning sponsor its new [TS]

00:38:53   relic new relic is a software analytics [TS]

00:39:08   2014 it's not the nineties anymore [TS]

00:39:11   one thing people are really focused on [TS]

00:39:12   this year seamless application [TS]

00:39:14   performance across multiple platforms on [TS]

00:39:17   all of their devices now that sounds [TS]

00:39:20   simple actually that sounds really hard [TS]

00:39:22   making an appt work consistently well on [TS]

00:39:25   lots of different devices all with [TS]

00:39:27   different operating systems running [TS]

00:39:29   totally different types of software is [TS]

00:39:31   super complicated back in the old days [TS]

00:39:33   let's say 2007 it was basically [TS]

00:39:36   impossible for an app developer to know [TS]

00:39:38   his or her appt was performing once we [TS]

00:39:41   ship the production it was a mystery [TS]

00:39:43   remember those days we spent a lot of [TS]

00:39:45   time there be bug hunts eventually just [TS]

00:39:49   close your eyes you sweating [TS]

00:39:51   cross your fingers and hope for the best [TS]

00:39:54   see what happens when regular people use [TS]

00:39:56   my app then you sit around monitoring [TS]

00:39:58   Twitter the app stores looking for [TS]

00:40:01   reviews looking for complaints hoping [TS]

00:40:04   that the apps are performing and [TS]

00:40:06   dreading that they're not performing who [TS]

00:40:09   quite a story scary story there but [TS]

00:40:12   those days are behind us [TS]

00:40:14   New Relic lets you track your [TS]

00:40:15   application performance down to the end [TS]

00:40:22   bugs and fix car [TS]

00:40:24   good fast way before users even notice [TS]

00:40:27   that anything has gone wrong [TS]

00:40:29   really great not a scary story anymore [TS]

00:40:59   thanks to New Relic for sponsoring the [TS]

00:41:00   podcast ok centipede attack [TS]

00:41:03   r2d2 is a terrible security would i have [TS]

00:41:06   i have those exact words in my notes he [TS]

00:41:08   is the worst security system ever mean [TS]

00:41:10   to think about what happens in this room [TS]

00:41:12   bright lights noise objects falling from [TS]

00:41:15   the ceiling to the ground he can detect [TS]

00:41:17   none of these things a toddler in the [TS]

00:41:19   room would turn his toddler head towards [TS]

00:41:21   the emotion and the noise and light [TS]

00:41:23   aren't you nothing that doesn't even [TS]

00:41:25   notice he's in sleep mode [TS]

00:41:26   I don't know that he's worse than the [TS]

00:41:28   two Jedi in the next room who are [TS]

00:41:30   bickering well their target while [TS]

00:41:32   they're like it but you're Jenny's Magic [TS]

00:41:34   Man her right that should I they're Jedi [TS]

00:41:37   come on your you didn't send two [TS]

00:41:39   Schmucks to cart but they say he's a [TS]

00:41:41   computer with sensors and rockets and [TS]

00:41:44   stuff and yet I think the idea is that [TS]

00:41:46   is he fell asleep or something or that [TS]

00:41:48   because they didn't break the little [TS]

00:41:49   beams he's admitting just look around [TS]

00:41:51   it's the only thing moving with bright [TS]

00:41:53   lights in the entire room how can you [TS]

00:41:55   not know I mean the giant to their [TS]

00:41:56   credit even though they're not in the [TS]

00:41:57   room sense the danger eventually and [TS]

00:41:59   jump in and killed the little worm [TS]

00:42:01   things but there are two is fired wait [TS]

00:42:03   okay wait I have to take issue with the [TS]

00:42:04   way they kill them because when you have [TS]

00:42:06   force powers you could just throw things [TS]

00:42:08   against the wall instead you're gonna [TS]

00:42:09   use a lightsaber and carefully choose [TS]

00:42:11   from someone's face to slice it out of [TS]

00:42:13   her hair was just trying to show off [TS]

00:42:15   like that that if you're trying to look [TS]

00:42:16   for some way the mannequin could do [TS]

00:42:17   something that could conceivably be [TS]

00:42:19   impressive maybe you could say [TS]

00:42:21   demonstrating his jedi skillz x like [TS]

00:42:23   floating stupid Paras around and stuff [TS]

00:42:25   maybe that could be impressive to like a [TS]

00:42:27   in a teenage girl who she's set up at [TS]

00:42:29   the wrong home this story ends wait to [TS]

00:42:31   see it but in a better way I think yeah [TS]

00:42:34   we just put on a robot head i'm curious [TS]

00:42:36   as to why it takes them Intel the [TS]

00:42:38   centipedes are actually crawling into [TS]

00:42:40   her hair to to sense it [TS]

00:42:42   I sense it too for drawing Steve drama [TS]

00:42:45   since 8th grade five seconds ago [TS]

00:42:47   yeah but they're still pickering when he [TS]

00:42:48   senses it suddenly the answer to every [TS]

00:42:50   question you have steve is because it's [TS]

00:42:52   in the script they sense that r2d2 was [TS]

00:42:54   beeping his sleep cycle instead of being [TS]

00:42:56   awake that's what they said it when they [TS]

00:42:58   have Palpatine send Anakin to get pad me [TS]

00:43:02   like the property is trying to do these [TS]

00:43:03   things look at the puppet master he's [TS]

00:43:04   gonna send this guy to get that guy talk [TS]

00:43:06   to this guy and ask her about that and [TS]

00:43:08   you're like it seems like oh it's this [TS]

00:43:10   amazing plan is coming together but the [TS]

00:43:11   only reason any of these things work [TS]

00:43:13   like Palpatine's his little plan to send [TS]

00:43:17   people to various places and he knows [TS]

00:43:18   that person is going to be sent to [TS]

00:43:19   protect her and stuff is because the [TS]

00:43:21   script says so like that you couldn't [TS]

00:43:23   set off I if I send obi-wan to protect [TS]

00:43:26   her the Nobel on the Jedi people who [TS]

00:43:27   decide to Nana can protect her then and [TS]

00:43:29   we'll get together with her because I [TS]

00:43:30   know the next movie like if you follow [TS]

00:43:32   the steps backwards [TS]

00:43:34   there's no expectation that they would [TS]

00:43:35   have come out this way and the only [TS]

00:43:36   reason i do is like the handset because [TS]

00:43:38   the script said they should i am glad to [TS]

00:43:40   see that there's a strong market for [TS]

00:43:41   robots that their sole purpose is to [TS]

00:43:44   dissolve holes in windows and then [TS]

00:43:46   delivered the contents of a tube through [TS]

00:43:47   them heroes its sole purpose for other [TS]

00:43:51   things too it's it's I think that's a [TS]

00:43:52   multitasking delivers death stare like [TS]

00:43:54   r2d2 has like five functions including [TS]

00:43:58   rockets [TS]

00:43:59   yeah and apparently sleeping through [TS]

00:44:00   guard duty is one of the so 100 be one [TS]

00:44:02   in a as proving he's a man of action [TS]

00:44:05   leaps out of the window into the open [TS]

00:44:09   space grabs ahold of the of the after [TS]

00:44:12   incidentally just spending the whole [TS]

00:44:13   night lecturing Anakin on how they're [TS]

00:44:15   just there to protect Padme yeah so he [TS]

00:44:17   he obviously was convinced and he jumped [TS]

00:44:20   out and then we get to see one year [TS]

00:44:22   after mark monsters inc was released we [TS]

00:44:24   get to see a replay of the door scene 4 [TS]

00:44:26   monsters as he dangles from a thing and [TS]

00:44:30   swings around in a large space and goes [TS]

00:44:31   whoa does not get my car and exactly [TS]

00:44:35   does never gets hit by car there's never [TS]

00:44:36   anything but I was struck by how much it [TS]

00:44:38   was like the door scene and monsters [TS]

00:44:39   incorporated and then there's this penny [TS]

00:44:42   ends up in a speeder chase this is all [TS]

00:44:44   happening three-dimensional [TS]

00:44:46   and there's cars everywhere and there's [TS]

00:44:48   a whole chase happening and the notes i [TS]

00:44:49   have here is it all seems really slow [TS]

00:44:53   there's no wind that they completely [TS]

00:44:55   lose the guy and then somehow are like [TS]

00:44:57   he's over there and pick up the chase [TS]

00:44:59   again which makes no sense at all [TS]

00:45:01   there's a shortcut [TS]

00:45:02   even though they're traveling in [TS]

00:45:03   completely unfettered three-dimensional [TS]

00:45:05   space [TS]

00:45:06   yes there's a shortcut that leaves them [TS]

00:45:07   several hundred feet higher and like a [TS]

00:45:11   minute ahead [TS]

00:45:12   so that's a really good shortcut i would [TS]

00:45:14   like to complain about a line of [TS]

00:45:15   dialogue here which was meant to be a [TS]

00:45:18   light-hearted and airy and quippy it's [TS]

00:45:21   when Anakin says oh you know master i [TS]

00:45:24   couldn't find a speeder i really liked [TS]

00:45:26   yeah I have to blame the director or [TS]

00:45:30   somebody for not saying that line didn't [TS]

00:45:32   work at all [TS]

00:45:33   let's just cut it once more for safety [TS]

00:45:36   please [TS]

00:45:36   Hayden ya know that the director is the [TS]

00:45:39   writer so you know he doesn't like [TS]

00:45:41   anything claimed go ahead but like its [TS]

00:45:42   it goes back to John's point about the [TS]

00:45:44   first movie right [TS]

00:45:45   this is the take they took you know [TS]

00:45:47   George Lucas on it takes like nothing's [TS]

00:45:49   gonna get me another one that's good [TS]

00:45:50   let's use that one boy when it was a [TS]

00:45:52   moment when the flying car because I [TS]

00:45:54   mean guys course on City a planet that's [TS]

00:45:57   just a city it's got layers of traffic [TS]

00:45:59   you've got this so it's a super [TS]

00:46:00   futuristic thing and you gotta chase [TS]

00:46:03   scene and you've got a car that's like a [TS]

00:46:05   hot rod flying car and and you need to [TS]

00:46:08   go down a bunch of levels recklessly and [TS]

00:46:10   so you're gonna you're just gonna go out [TS]

00:46:11   of lanes of traffic and shoot down and [TS]

00:46:13   you cut to the people who are doing it [TS]

00:46:14   and it's like they're going through a [TS]

00:46:16   tollbooth there's no wind [TS]

00:46:18   there's no excitement it's like it's [TS]

00:46:21   like dad let's me drive in the driveway [TS]

00:46:23   on Sundays it's just I a blew me away [TS]

00:46:25   that this is theoretically this should [TS]

00:46:27   be very exciting and it wasn't exciting [TS]

00:46:29   at all [TS]

00:46:29   well they reflect the level of [TS]

00:46:30   excitement that that I had and watching [TS]

00:46:32   this is a better version of the scene go [TS]

00:46:34   to start or is it is no way this is this [TS]

00:46:36   is the problem that i have with [TS]

00:46:37   remembering anything in this movie and [TS]

00:46:39   and this is just one of maybe like 10 [TS]

00:46:42   different sequences that are just pure [TS]

00:46:44   action and its really it's because the [TS]

00:46:46   movie is just basically a bunch of video [TS]

00:46:47   game levels and they're strung together [TS]

00:46:50   with really terrible cutscenes but like [TS]

00:46:52   ninety percent of it is just crazy video [TS]

00:46:55   game stuff flies around and goes boom [TS]

00:46:57   and it just totally fails to make any [TS]

00:46:58   sort of lasting [TS]

00:46:59   pression mean there's even a conveyor [TS]

00:47:01   belt season scene which is something [TS]

00:47:03   that's been a videogame clichéd since [TS]

00:47:04   before some of you were born [TS]

00:47:06   there's no sense of any mass with this [TS]

00:47:08   ship or like when somebody's eyes to [TS]

00:47:11   jump out of the ship and plummet 500 [TS]

00:47:13   miles and get caught again there's no [TS]

00:47:17   danger to them why should there be [TS]

00:47:18   danger to me the audience you know [TS]

00:47:21   there's no feeling of even physics here [TS]

00:47:22   that was a problem in the first movie to [TS]

00:47:24   is yeah there was just no sense that [TS]

00:47:26   anything bad could potentially even [TS]

00:47:27   happen to these characters so what's the [TS]

00:47:29   point yeah there's another issue I have [TS]

00:47:32   with all these these scenes too and [TS]

00:47:33   that's that so much of this chase in [TS]

00:47:35   particular but it happens throughout the [TS]

00:47:37   movie it's it's focused on showing us [TS]

00:47:39   the cool fake buildings of khorasan and [TS]

00:47:42   the chase its I mean like will be [TS]

00:47:44   zooming in on some neon colored color [TS]

00:47:46   book covered building for several [TS]

00:47:48   seconds and then after we've been [TS]

00:47:50   looking at that for a while you know [TS]

00:47:52   maybe the bounty hunter will run to view [TS]

00:47:53   of the top right corner but it's just [TS]

00:47:56   we're forced to stare at these set [TS]

00:47:58   pieces and the chase is just totally [TS]

00:48:00   incidental i also don't after the [TS]

00:48:03   shortcut he there's this really dramatic [TS]

00:48:06   scene where he he's figured out how he [TS]

00:48:09   could get her because because they took [TS]

00:48:11   the shortcut and he jumps out and jumps [TS]

00:48:14   out of the car and falls all the way [TS]

00:48:16   down to her and it's perfectly timed you [TS]

00:48:17   never get any sense that he's been [TS]

00:48:19   timing it or that he knows where it is [TS]

00:48:20   it does even I like I get the point of [TS]

00:48:24   of it happening and yet it isn't set up [TS]

00:48:27   properly so when it happens it's sort of [TS]

00:48:28   like what how did that happen and then [TS]

00:48:31   he he lands also i guess when they're on [TS]

00:48:34   the ground they say that that that the [TS]

00:48:36   bounty hunter is probably a changeling [TS]

00:48:38   so there's your star trek cross over [TS]

00:48:40   there Dan like odo yeah I appreciate [TS]

00:48:42   that [TS]

00:48:43   well did it which makes no sense at all [TS]

00:48:45   because there's like one scene when [TS]

00:48:46   she's driving the ship where you see [TS]

00:48:48   you're like her face flickr slightly and [TS]

00:48:50   then when she dies she turns into going [TS]

00:48:52   to her natural floor why didn't you just [TS]

00:48:54   stay in the natural form the whole time [TS]

00:48:56   as aliens all over this planet [TS]

00:48:57   why don't you just turn into any other [TS]

00:48:59   form and walk away like that she has her [TS]

00:49:01   little cloth mouth covering which [TS]

00:49:03   chicken [TS]

00:49:04   yeah protects her fake identity great [TS]

00:49:06   it's definitely take that off in the [TS]

00:49:08   middle of flying around why not wait [TS]

00:49:10   until you've gotten lost [TS]

00:49:12   obviously she thinks it's very effective [TS]

00:49:13   because you kinda looks around behind [TS]

00:49:15   her like she's making sure no one's [TS]

00:49:16   looking before she takes it off her [TS]

00:49:17   mouth [TS]

00:49:18   I don't know there's just yet there's so [TS]

00:49:20   much wrong with the scene in addition [TS]

00:49:21   just the whole like the resolution of [TS]

00:49:23   the scene with the we think the assassin [TS]

00:49:25   was hired by a bounty hunter like how [TS]

00:49:27   many layers of contracting are going on [TS]

00:49:29   here [TS]

00:49:30   you're a bounty hunter you don't need to [TS]

00:49:31   hire an assassin to do this but because [TS]

00:49:34   they keep increasing and competence look [TS]

00:49:36   again when they try to blow off the you [TS]

00:49:37   know the senator when she lands she's [TS]

00:49:39   there you could just picture off with [TS]

00:49:40   the sniper rifle like any of these [TS]

00:49:41   people could be killed at any time by a [TS]

00:49:43   twentieth-century sniper on this planet [TS]

00:49:45   who just wanders around the battlefield [TS]

00:49:47   and yet but with all the advanced [TS]

00:49:49   technology like the best way to kill her [TS]

00:49:51   is with worms can we get some worms into [TS]

00:49:53   her room at the poison dart shot it [TS]

00:49:56   wanted like you have a mile away by the [TS]

00:49:57   master ground should pad me with that [TS]

00:50:00   done and done [TS]

00:50:01   where's Padme during this whole chase if [TS]

00:50:04   he could just kill people as well as he [TS]

00:50:05   commanded subcontractors he'll be fine [TS]

00:50:07   he just hired two Assassin's the first [TS]

00:50:08   assassin gets all the bodyguards chasing [TS]

00:50:10   them halfway across chorus on the other [TS]

00:50:12   one just has to get through george r and [TS]

00:50:15   the in the handmaiden [TS]

00:50:16   I do like the fact that when the poison [TS]

00:50:18   dart get shot at the bounty hunter [TS]

00:50:19   obi-wan takes the opportunity to pull it [TS]

00:50:22   out look at it and say toxic Dart [TS]

00:50:24   thanks thanks Toby you are ok you just [TS]

00:50:28   skipped past what I think is the dumbest [TS]

00:50:30   thing in all of Star Wars is the [TS]

00:50:33   death-sticks it's the bar name of the [TS]

00:50:35   person who set who is trying to sell [TS]

00:50:37   death-sticks it's Elian sleazebag o Neal [TS]

00:50:40   I'm a sleazebag know because he is a [TS]

00:50:44   sleazebag that it actually manages to [TS]

00:50:48   top Count Dooku that's pretty good [TS]

00:50:49   aliens sleazebag no yes route bag and [TS]

00:50:52   although i think if you look carefully [TS]

00:50:54   in the in that bar scene you can see [TS]

00:50:55   both anthony daniels and Ahmed best two [TS]

00:50:58   plays Jar Jar as well as is and you can [TS]

00:51:00   see Lucas's Lucas's daughter's in there [TS]

00:51:02   twice i think they give her two shots on [TS]

00:51:04   camera [TS]

00:51:04   I just assume all of the younglings [TS]

00:51:07   later on our Lucas's kids it's got [TS]

00:51:09   Mykelti will appreciate this wherever he [TS]

00:51:11   is it reminded me of the bar scene in [TS]

00:51:13   Star Trek 3 which is an attempt to [TS]

00:51:16   create an energy future bar scene like [TS]

00:51:19   in Blade Runner maybe even the original [TS]

00:51:21   star wars but in fact it is not that [TS]

00:51:24   interesting and seems kind of corny and [TS]

00:51:27   this reminded me of that [TS]

00:51:28   yeah but there's a lot of blade runner [TS]

00:51:29   esque imagery with neon lights and I'm [TS]

00:51:31   surprised that people with umbrellas [TS]

00:51:33   plateau panels but they came they don't [TS]

00:51:35   mind right up to that line and so that [TS]

00:51:36   you know that the most Eisley cantina [TS]

00:51:37   reflections with like obi-wan cutting [TS]

00:51:40   off someone's arm and the whole idea i [TS]

00:51:42   give that like at least at least that [TS]

00:51:45   that type of thing having only one in a [TS]

00:51:47   bar and cutting off someone's arm at [TS]

00:51:48   least that doesn't involve dialogue so [TS]

00:51:50   we're spared their spirits one aspect of [TS]

00:51:52   the terror that is this movie were [TS]

00:51:54   spared a line if you're going like this [TS]

00:51:55   will probably come up again someday [TS]

00:51:57   so much of this movie is just mindless [TS]

00:51:59   callbacks you'll be the death of me haha [TS]

00:52:03   i did they tried to the scene where like [TS]

00:52:05   they show that the assassin creeping up [TS]

00:52:07   and you they try to make you think he's [TS]

00:52:08   creeping up and can instead of creeping [TS]

00:52:09   up and we want but like it's done so [TS]

00:52:12   badly like that cliché just events [TS]

00:52:14   there either way you don't get someone's [TS]

00:52:16   creeping up to a door but it's not the [TS]

00:52:17   door you think it is and he opens the [TS]

00:52:19   door and you realize it you know that [TS]

00:52:20   whole cliché I were talking about it [TS]

00:52:23   Jason mentioned bad editing like it's [TS]

00:52:24   just not competently done nevermind that [TS]

00:52:26   we don't care about these people and we [TS]

00:52:27   know how it's going to turn out there's [TS]

00:52:28   no actual attention [TS]

00:52:29   it's just not done well well it's weird [TS]

00:52:31   too because it's one of the few we were [TS]

00:52:32   pointing out watching it that it's one [TS]

00:52:34   of the few first person camera shots in [TS]

00:52:37   Star Wars if there are any at all like [TS]

00:52:39   you get a perspective shot from Anakin [TS]

00:52:41   as he's walking through the bar and you [TS]

00:52:43   get these wacky sort of moving close ups [TS]

00:52:45   which feel very unstar Wars like because [TS]

00:52:49   we don't see that kind of camera work [TS]

00:52:50   anywhere else it's very odd now in the [TS]

00:52:53   bar scene we do get a nice window into [TS]

00:52:55   the importance of the master to Padawan [TS]

00:52:57   a relationship when Anakin tells ob1 [TS]

00:53:01   that he thinks that this this person [TS]

00:53:03   they're chasing maybe a shape-shifter [TS]

00:53:04   and the solid Jedi Master advice it gets [TS]

00:53:07   back is be extra careful that's just [TS]

00:53:10   good writing again [TS]

00:53:11   ob1 thanks a lot man that's what my mom [TS]

00:53:13   says every time I hang up the phone with [TS]

00:53:15   her [TS]

00:53:15   be careful that's huge it did quite [TS]

00:53:17   gotten tell you [TS]

00:53:18   that is that how you get that's how we [TS]

00:53:19   learn that no see I'm willing to give up [TS]

00:53:21   we won the benefit of the doubt here and [TS]

00:53:23   so like yea alright be extra careful [TS]

00:53:24   then I don't know I feel I end up [TS]

00:53:26   feeling bad for obi-wan most last movie [TS]

00:53:28   he was just a whiny annoying pain but [TS]

00:53:30   now [TS]

00:53:30   Anakin has grown into that role and most [TS]

00:53:32   of the time I feel pretty bad for [TS]

00:53:34   everyone especially later on when he's [TS]

00:53:36   talking about like you know mace windu [TS]

00:53:39   and you're like yet and Anakin to do [TS]

00:53:41   this thing is like guys he is not ready [TS]

00:53:43   for that they're like nope sorry we're [TS]

00:53:45   sending him to do this thing and I'm [TS]

00:53:46   like wow so really wasn't will be once [TS]

00:53:48   no yeah i'm always looking for like any [TS]

00:53:51   sympathetic characters movie and we want [TS]

00:53:52   is the closest to being sympathetic I [TS]

00:53:54   think what you want a greater comes the [TS]

00:53:55   closest to rising above the material the [TS]

00:53:58   situations and everything else involved [TS]

00:54:00   in this movie and trying to make a [TS]

00:54:01   character that you perhaps have some [TS]

00:54:03   pity for if only pity that he has to be [TS]

00:54:05   in this movie at least he's now [TS]

00:54:07   graduated from the Padawan rat tail [TS]

00:54:09   yes admittedly it's to the full fledge [TS]

00:54:11   force mullet but at least he doesn't [TS]

00:54:13   have to carry that braid right hey that [TS]

00:54:15   is in honor of qui-gon jinn ok let's [TS]

00:56:51   Squarespace everything you need to [TS]

00:56:53   create an exceptional website [TS]

00:56:56   great can we do it briefly the diner [TS]

00:56:58   scene i have one note about that with [TS]

00:56:59   the totally superfluous fifties diner [TS]

00:57:02   Lucas loves 250 remember we're not we're [TS]

00:57:04   not up to the diner scene yet [TS]

00:57:06   that's right after the the toxic Dart so [TS]

00:57:08   they go back they go back to Amidala and [TS]

00:57:11   then they had they have a they have a [TS]

00:57:12   check in with the as another [TS]

00:57:16   interminable see more people sit on [TS]

00:57:17   couches lockwell so i wanted to mention [TS]

00:57:19   that i actually took notes on this part [TS]

00:57:20   so I'm get by gum I'm gonna get them out [TS]

00:57:22   because they referred Amidala as the [TS]

00:57:23   leader of the Opposition at one point [TS]

00:57:25   which I am completely baffled by because [TS]

00:57:28   now we've got layers within layers in [TS]

00:57:29   the Imperial Senate what is she opposing [TS]

00:57:31   she isshe opposing the separatists is [TS]

00:57:33   she opposing Palpatine it doesn't look [TS]

00:57:35   like it because she's got meetings with [TS]

00:57:36   him [TS]

00:57:37   what is she she had is she like in the [TS]

00:57:39   blue political party and there's also a [TS]

00:57:42   red political party and but there are [TS]

00:57:44   around [TS]

00:57:45   event because then there's separatists I [TS]

00:57:47   don't understand why she's the leader of [TS]

00:57:49   anything let alone an opposition that I [TS]

00:57:51   don't understand from what I can [TS]

00:57:53   understand and i'm basing this entirely [TS]

00:57:56   off of the crawl and the little i read [TS]

00:57:58   off Wikipedia Wikipedia it's the the [TS]

00:58:02   bill that they talked about that's been [TS]

00:58:04   voted on and committee for the last two [TS]

00:58:06   years that she's flown to correspond to [TS]

00:58:09   vote on that we hear about once in the [TS]

00:58:11   crawl and then never again besides that [TS]

00:58:14   she's the leader of the Opposition for [TS]

00:58:16   this bill I guess that's why they're [TS]

00:58:17   trying to kill her [TS]

00:58:18   well yeah the bill itself i think has to [TS]

00:58:21   do with creating a standing army and [TS]

00:58:23   she's opposed to that which is hilarious [TS]

00:58:26   because the clones end up you know [TS]

00:58:28   that's why they talk they talked when [TS]

00:58:30   she's out of the picture they can talk [TS]

00:58:31   to charger into it which is part of the [TS]

00:58:32   plot I just know it when you've got an [TS]

00:58:34   opposition and you've also got a [TS]

00:58:36   rebellion essentially the separatists it [TS]

00:58:38   gets really confusing to throw these [TS]

00:58:40   political terms around and and again but [TS]

00:58:42   sometimes people to find these movies [TS]

00:58:43   and say these movies for kids so with [TS]

00:58:45   these movies for kids it's really too [TS]

00:58:47   damn confusing because i have no idea [TS]

00:58:49   what's going on here in terms of the [TS]

00:58:51   politics at all my other notes here by [TS]

00:58:53   the way are we get some really good [TS]

00:58:55   crazy Amidala hair here which is very [TS]

00:58:57   clearly like see this is where her [TS]

00:58:59   daughter got it [TS]

00:59:00   this is where the crazy hairstyles come [TS]

00:59:01   from and i'm also in this seemed [TS]

00:59:04   everybody keeps referring to how great [TS]

00:59:07   Anakin is which i find fascinating [TS]

00:59:08   because I up on the screen and he [TS]

00:59:10   doesn't seem like he's that great at all [TS]

00:59:11   and and that and that while they're [TS]

00:59:14   playing him like he's somebody who's got [TS]

00:59:15   this dark side who's going to come out [TS]

00:59:17   that's always the kind of dream of the [TS]

00:59:19   the star wars backstory is he always had [TS]

00:59:21   this undercurrent in it it went horribly [TS]

00:59:23   wrong [TS]

00:59:23   I can't read them as anything other than [TS]

00:59:25   just kind of a spoiled brat who doesn't [TS]

00:59:26   like it when he doesn't get what he [TS]

00:59:27   wants which is you know spoiled brat who [TS]

00:59:30   becomes evil monster is not as exciting [TS]

00:59:32   or interesting as person with a good [TS]

00:59:35   core and a dark side that gets exploited [TS]

00:59:37   but that's how I feel about it is that [TS]

00:59:40   he just comes across as like a spoiled [TS]

00:59:41   oh yeah [TS]

00:59:42   don't look at me like that it makes me [TS]

00:59:43   feel uncomfortable he could not find a [TS]

00:59:45   speeder like okay okay i'll keep the [TS]

00:59:47   leering at you and drooling this is the [TS]

00:59:49   point that i wrote in my notes in your [TS]

00:59:50   pre prequel Star Wars related daydreams [TS]

00:59:53   when you wonder what Anakin Skywalker [TS]

00:59:54   was like man [TS]

00:59:55   especially that little wider even on [TS]

00:59:58   your radar man [TS]

00:59:58   your radar man [TS]

01:00:00   I'm pretty sure it was a creepy stalker [TS]

01:00:02   was definitely not on my radar it is [TS]

01:00:04   really unloading a lot of crap about [TS]

01:00:06   obi-wan padmé here [TS]

01:00:08   yeah well especially after he keeps [TS]

01:00:09   repeatedly telling everyone that you're [TS]

01:00:11   like a father to me like again it's no [TS]

01:00:14   more plausible in so it that that [TS]

01:00:16   relationship is no more plausible than [TS]

01:00:18   the relationship between human pod may [TS]

01:00:19   really you know he says you're like a [TS]

01:00:22   father me and yeah okay there's a little [TS]

01:00:23   bit of that like oh I'm having gone [TS]

01:00:25   through my teenage rebellion phase but I [TS]

01:00:27   don't know I just I just don't buy it [TS]

01:00:29   they don't sound like it [TS]

01:00:31   you can't just yell so you can't just [TS]

01:00:32   say that you're like yeah exactly [TS]

01:00:34   show me this is like apologizing nothing [TS]

01:00:36   on my way shows that stop telling me [TS]

01:00:38   start doing something I do think it's [TS]

01:00:40   interesting that that scene that you're [TS]

01:00:42   like a father to me scene comes [TS]

01:00:44   immediately before he goes and meets [TS]

01:00:46   with Palpatine and Palpatine's like oh [TS]

01:00:48   so you're really giving you your real [TS]

01:00:51   position congratulations would be son [TS]

01:00:54   haha me go [TS]

01:00:57   haha don't mind this hood back here I've [TS]

01:00:59   don't have it for any particular reason [TS]

01:01:00   to style the hoodie they all the kids [TS]

01:01:03   with me and mcdermott also putting in [TS]

01:01:06   you know giving a game attempt to [TS]

01:01:08   continue his role as Palpatine here if [TS]

01:01:10   the only one who has a sensible [TS]

01:01:12   character arc where he was the galaxy [TS]

01:01:15   and many tries to do things to rule the [TS]

01:01:17   galaxy aided by the ridiculous script [TS]

01:01:19   that make all these plans come to [TS]

01:01:20   fruition without any real effort on his [TS]

01:01:22   part but it's clear what his motivation [TS]

01:01:24   is is clearly is a bad guy so he's got a [TS]

01:01:27   leg up on almost everyone else in this [TS]

01:01:28   movie [TS]

01:01:29   yeah i mean dan and I were talking about [TS]

01:01:31   this what we were watching the end of [TS]

01:01:32   the movie and if Palpatine's real goal [TS]

01:01:35   is to play two sides against the other [TS]

01:01:37   it would have been a lot cooler to [TS]

01:01:39   actually see a lot more of his [TS]

01:01:41   machinations in this film and in the [TS]

01:01:44   prior film and really make it be like [TS]

01:01:46   Anakin may have had some dark side in [TS]

01:01:48   him but here is the man who basically [TS]

01:01:51   corrupted him and destroyed his life [TS]

01:01:53   while also kind of destroying the entire [TS]

01:01:56   Republic like that's an interesting [TS]

01:01:58   story right [TS]

01:02:00   you'd have to come up with a plausible [TS]

01:02:01   scenario for him to turn evil which they [TS]

01:02:03   as we find out in third movie they never [TS]

01:02:05   they never I never I never buy any can I [TS]

01:02:08   never buy in turning evil one reason for [TS]

01:02:10   Anakin to like start off as a sweet [TS]

01:02:11   little boy [TS]

01:02:12   I and somehow because you know they they [TS]

01:02:15   never come up with any reason for him to [TS]

01:02:17   be evil you sure he's whiny and creepy [TS]

01:02:19   but like happy and because Darth Vader [TS]

01:02:22   is not Leary he dark there has dignity [TS]

01:02:25   Anakin has no dignity and how do you go [TS]

01:02:26   like this no there's no path is no [TS]

01:02:28   connecting between A&B it's just like he [TS]

01:02:30   swept along by the script in a certain [TS]

01:02:32   point they put him in the mask name [TS]

01:02:33   anyway that's it so facile is the thing [TS]

01:02:35   with the whole like when he had the [TS]

01:02:37   political discussion with Padma about [TS]

01:02:39   like someone should be in charge just [TS]

01:02:41   tell everyone what to do [TS]

01:02:43   yeah maybe not me but someone John I [TS]

01:02:45   don't really believe that little bit and [TS]

01:02:50   that person would decide what to do and [TS]

01:02:52   that would work very well is it like why [TS]

01:02:54   would she even like again this is [TS]

01:02:56   supposed to be attractive who having a [TS]

01:02:57   political discussions the politics right [TS]

01:02:59   she's been a senator she's ruled the [TS]

01:03:01   planet he must seem like the dumbest [TS]

01:03:03   most night you wearing creepy [TS]

01:03:05   uninteresting like they're there should [TS]

01:03:07   be no attraction between these people [TS]

01:03:08   and yet on the other hand the extent of [TS]

01:03:11   her political savvy is to put jar jar [TS]

01:03:14   and charged in our stead [TS]

01:03:16   so he's newly elected representatives to [TS]

01:03:19   maybe she didn't really put a whole lot [TS]

01:03:20   of thought into this [TS]

01:03:22   the I think some of the core problems [TS]

01:03:24   with Emma can stem from and with with [TS]

01:03:27   Palpatine stem from two decisions made [TS]

01:03:29   in the first movie which we talked about [TS]

01:03:31   a little bit which is one probably [TS]

01:03:33   having a meeting [TS]

01:03:34   Anakin Skywalker as a little kid is part [TS]

01:03:37   of the problem because it forced them to [TS]

01:03:39   read connell sorts of things about when [TS]

01:03:40   i met your father he was a great pilot [TS]

01:03:42   and things like that so he's a kid pilot [TS]

01:03:44   ok I i think that was a mistake and if [TS]

01:03:46   we had met him a little bit later [TS]

01:03:47   probably would have made more sense in [TS]

01:03:48   that story arc might have that I you [TS]

01:03:51   know it's harmed by the faculty meeting [TS]

01:03:53   as a little kid and then the other thing [TS]

01:03:54   is this decision to make [TS]

01:03:55   Palpatine's rise and his evilness sort [TS]

01:03:57   of like secret which I guess the idea [TS]

01:04:00   there as well it's going to be a real [TS]

01:04:01   twist when you realize he's the bad guy [TS]

01:04:03   but you know that's it's not and you [TS]

01:04:07   miss you miss actually seeing him [TS]

01:04:10   pulling the strings behind the scenes [TS]

01:04:11   more overtly because we still can tell [TS]

01:04:14   that it's him but yet he's sidelined it [TS]

01:04:17   makes it maybe I look even more [TS]

01:04:18   incompetent because it's likely we spent [TS]

01:04:20   the first movie fine pretend pretend you [TS]

01:04:22   didn't know until the end of the first [TS]

01:04:23   movie the second movie everybody knows [TS]

01:04:24   everybody knows accepted [TS]

01:04:26   nice the giant just look stupid and [TS]

01:04:28   incompetent and not because they're like [TS]

01:04:29   decadent lazy like that's the story they [TS]

01:04:31   want to tell they want to snuggle the [TS]

01:04:33   Jedi had become you know that they had [TS]

01:04:35   lost their their way or whatever on the [TS]

01:04:37   dark side is clouding their jobs they've [TS]

01:04:39   stopped doing lightsaber battles they've [TS]

01:04:41   been sucked into trade negotiations they [TS]

01:04:43   just come off a stupid instead like [TS]

01:04:44   that's that there is a better movie in [TS]

01:04:46   there you could say about how you know [TS]

01:04:48   this was the decadent world and the Jedi [TS]

01:04:49   have lost lost their vision of what [TS]

01:04:51   they're supposed to be doing but instead [TS]

01:04:53   you see a bunch of sort of incompetent [TS]

01:04:56   sort of timid not very smart not very [TS]

01:04:59   powerful Jedi making bad decisions that [TS]

01:05:01   it's not because they're decadent or [TS]

01:05:02   because there's some kind of you know [TS]

01:05:04   that they've been blinded by their own [TS]

01:05:06   arrogance none of that is there they're [TS]

01:05:07   just kinda like Kobe door stupid [TS]

01:05:09   yeah you are you deserved it three [TS]

01:05:11   killed off there's an early line for [TS]

01:05:13   mace windu where he says Dooku was once [TS]

01:05:15   a Jedi he couldn't assassinate anyone [TS]

01:05:17   that's not how foolish you are but so is [TS]

01:05:22   turning to the darkside not a thing yet [TS]

01:05:23   I mean I haven't read a whole lot of the [TS]

01:05:25   extended universe talk about this if in [TS]

01:05:29   episode one [TS]

01:05:30   yeah but they don't explain why he'd let [TS]

01:05:32   him like how do you become a former Jedi [TS]

01:05:34   yeah he retired he retires disappeared [TS]

01:05:38   test no he's known because he's a leader [TS]

01:05:40   of the separatists we formed attachments [TS]

01:05:42   and that's really the problem after the [TS]

01:05:47   first movie when they established Anakin [TS]

01:05:49   has more or less lovable well-adjusted [TS]

01:05:51   nice little kid who happens to be a [TS]

01:05:54   slave and let's not do really talked [TS]

01:05:55   about that once you've started him off [TS]

01:05:57   on that foot it's very difficult to get [TS]

01:06:00   him into a position where he becomes [TS]

01:06:02   Darth Vader if you had started them off [TS]

01:06:04   as like a street kid who is the member [TS]

01:06:06   of like a street gang and had to live [TS]

01:06:08   you know a tough life and learn that [TS]

01:06:10   might equals right like 30 it's it's so [TS]

01:06:13   very difficult no matter what happens [TS]

01:06:15   fine you use someone cheats on you think [TS]

01:06:17   all the Jedi betrayed you were ever to [TS]

01:06:18   extend that into ok well now i have to [TS]

01:06:20   kill all the Jedi an entire galaxy you [TS]

01:06:22   have to be like mad with power power [TS]

01:06:24   crazy you have to believe that power is [TS]

01:06:26   the only thing that's important you know [TS]

01:06:27   what you have to do I don't want to get [TS]

01:06:30   too much into episode three things but [TS]

01:06:31   once you start off as a cute little kid [TS]

01:06:34   it's super hard to get him into darth [TS]

01:06:36   vader and they don't even really make an [TS]

01:06:38   attempt at it [TS]

01:06:38   this movie that is making wine and they [TS]

01:06:40   say well if you take whiny and write [TS]

01:06:43   raise it to a large exponential power [TS]

01:06:45   equals darth vader and it doesn't we [TS]

01:06:47   know the Darth Vader was the whiniest of [TS]

01:06:49   all the villains yeah if you raise the [TS]

01:06:51   large power just as more whining this is [TS]

01:06:53   the problem i have with Anakin in this [TS]

01:06:55   movie is that we've been told throughout [TS]

01:06:57   the first trilogy that you know he he [TS]

01:06:59   was heroic [TS]

01:07:00   yes and so you expect to see somewhere [TS]

01:07:02   along the course of this film him [TS]

01:07:04   perform some sort of heroic deed or act [TS]

01:07:06   in a heroic fashion and he doesn't he's [TS]

01:07:08   basically a knob from start to finish [TS]

01:07:11   no he doesn't do anything he does very [TS]

01:07:13   little of any agency whatsoever i mean [TS]

01:07:14   even if you if you add in the last movie [TS]

01:07:16   his heroic action there was accidentally [TS]

01:07:20   point out the spit shipwright like in [TS]

01:07:22   terms of episode two [TS]

01:07:23   there's not much that he does in here [TS]

01:07:25   that is active period [TS]

01:07:28   other than the other than the fight [TS]

01:07:29   scenes yeah he jumps off of a a speeder [TS]

01:07:32   the accidental jetta even the fight [TS]

01:07:35   scenes are always fight scenes where [TS]

01:07:36   other people are like anakin no don't [TS]

01:07:38   know [TS]

01:07:39   ok he just got thrown against a wall he [TS]

01:07:41   killed all those sand people what else [TS]

01:07:43   you want from him kill some sandpaper I [TS]

01:07:44   killed them all the travel by refugee [TS]

01:07:47   transport we never see that we covered [TS]

01:07:48   that earlier than we do see them we do [TS]

01:07:50   see them in there briefly in their [TS]

01:07:52   travel by refugee and as usual Padma is [TS]

01:07:55   wearing some kind of shiny copper [TS]

01:07:57   headpiece weird hair stuff yes which is [TS]

01:07:59   exactly what you expect to see on [TS]

01:08:01   refugees certainly not a senator or a [TS]

01:08:04   queen definitely not to be drawn [TS]

01:08:05   attention to refugees love that stuff [TS]

01:08:08   also would anybody who is not a Padawan [TS]

01:08:11   where a rat tail by choice in this [TS]

01:08:13   universe that's a good point to yet we [TS]

01:08:15   know she knows how to dress down she did [TS]

01:08:17   it all through the first movie that's [TS]

01:08:19   right at least Anakin he sort of looks [TS]

01:08:21   the part he's got like his his his Jedi [TS]

01:08:24   poncho on it looks like you just woke up [TS]

01:08:27   in the gutter outside of the space [TS]

01:08:29   peanuts and beer and he could be a [TS]

01:08:31   refugee apart from the rat tail but [TS]

01:08:33   padme's got her usual 50 pounds of junk [TS]

01:08:37   in her hair and it's just absurd you [TS]

01:08:39   think she's slumming you can we talk [TS]

01:08:41   about the droid racism that seems [TS]

01:08:43   rampant in these movies and we aren't [TS]

01:08:46   you just once they go up and pick up [TS]

01:08:48   some food now it is just wants to pick [TS]

01:08:51   up some [TS]

01:08:51   food from like like maybe the bar you [TS]

01:08:53   don't want droids because like that's a [TS]

01:08:55   particular environment but he just wants [TS]

01:08:57   to go get food and bring it back to them [TS]

01:08:58   and the droid who's serving was gotta [TS]

01:09:00   give him enough no no get out of here no [TS]

01:09:02   droid seat [TS]

01:09:03   let's pick up the food i mean the joint [TS]

01:09:05   can't even heat right like that's the [TS]

01:09:07   worst part is like I'm not going to eat [TS]

01:09:08   them myself [TS]

01:09:09   you can I am a droid who understands [TS]

01:09:12   they do the unconscionable in and the [TS]

01:09:14   lead-up to this scene they kind of bag [TS]

01:09:16   on r2 they're walking towards the ship [TS]

01:09:18   and they're talking about how they're [TS]

01:09:19   scared and the responses at least we [TS]

01:09:21   have our two haha yeah these are the [TS]

01:09:24   jokes folks no seriously at least we [TS]

01:09:26   have our two is like the most heroic [TS]

01:09:27   character that we have in this entire [TS]

01:09:29   movie thank God [TS]

01:09:30   well that's like me saying at least I [TS]

01:09:31   have my gps unit in my car I mean by GPS [TS]

01:09:35   unit can fly it has lasers but it's [TS]

01:09:37   still basically just something to move [TS]

01:09:40   my car around right you gps stands a [TS]

01:09:42   better chance of protecting you in a [TS]

01:09:44   dark room from space enemies another [TS]

01:09:45   girl sweet [TS]

01:09:46   this is true and then here we are it's [TS]

01:09:49   the alien diner where where we meet the [TS]

01:09:51   weird diner alien who knows everything [TS]

01:09:53   there is to know about darts [TS]

01:09:56   oh yeah let's buy the OneNote having the [TS]

01:09:58   scene because again the writing i was [TS]

01:10:00   doing is right now things is he says the [TS]

01:10:02   word clear no nurs clutter is like [TS]

01:10:04   cloning those clients fellas pretty good [TS]

01:10:07   one likes to get it like it suddenly [TS]

01:10:09   turns into dora like you have to repeat [TS]

01:10:11   the same word that Cano's the best [TS]

01:10:13   cloners the clone a club we get it there [TS]

01:10:16   could we understand it's the title of [TS]

01:10:18   the movie like I don't understand what [TS]

01:10:19   that scene was there i don't understand [TS]

01:10:21   the other than Lucas obsession with the [TS]

01:10:23   fifties that character we don't care [TS]

01:10:25   about he's not interesting like at this [TS]

01:10:27   point also wrote my notes too many [TS]

01:10:28   characters too many planets to me it's [TS]

01:10:31   just too many moving parts you maestro [TS]

01:10:33   couldn't get these parts fit together [TS]

01:10:34   into a cohesive whole and Lucas is not a [TS]

01:10:37   maestro my notes say cloners like that [TS]

01:10:39   means anything but your door references [TS]

01:10:43   is a good is it is a good one John [TS]

01:10:45   because who do we ask for help when we [TS]

01:10:47   don't know which way to go [TS]

01:10:48   say map say map oh wait they took the [TS]

01:10:51   planet out of the map we can't say map [TS]

01:10:53   I thought it was really weird that all [TS]

01:10:56   the Jedi younglings were all exactly the [TS]

01:10:58   same height hello younglings [TS]

01:11:00   will this be a good spot to have some [TS]

01:11:01   aliens like they had the one red-faced [TS]

01:11:03   alien but they [TS]

01:11:04   have we know there's ton of weird shapes [TS]

01:11:06   or an extra tall alien or an extra short [TS]

01:11:09   yeah they're all kids they're all just [TS]

01:11:10   Lucas's me everything you did the [TS]

01:11:12   readers kids younglings are shooting [TS]

01:11:15   younglings classes at the Jedi school [TS]

01:11:17   are sorted by height you know everybody [TS]

01:11:20   chlorines are usually present in a [TS]

01:11:21   certain body type so depending on when [TS]

01:11:24   they manifest it's true i should i [TS]

01:11:25   should point out that that a beloved [TS]

01:11:27   podcast of mine and john's the flophouse [TS]

01:11:30   did an episode about episode 2 and the [TS]

01:11:32   only thing I remember I wanted to [TS]

01:11:33   mention from their episode about this [TS]

01:11:35   movie is the point that many of the [TS]

01:11:38   words used in this movie are English [TS]

01:11:40   words and occasionally a word will be [TS]

01:11:42   changed for no apparent reason other [TS]

01:11:44   than to make it seem alien e so we could [TS]

01:11:46   call these people kids or children but [TS]

01:11:48   no their younglings yuengling is a [TS]

01:11:50   redundant word space children young [TS]

01:11:54   means one thing and this suffix Ling [TS]

01:11:56   just means a young version of that young [TS]

01:11:59   young man doing anything [TS]

01:12:01   what's up young space space children [TS]

01:12:04   come on [TS]

01:12:04   word up my youngs the whole bit with the [TS]

01:12:07   map is pretty great because it's like [TS]

01:12:08   not only has it been you know the the [TS]

01:12:10   map has been erased [TS]

01:12:11   I like the idea first of all that it [TS]

01:12:13   should be that the planet should be [TS]

01:12:14   south of another planet that [TS]

01:12:16   particularly struck record be single [TS]

01:12:19   active true north [TS]

01:12:20   yeah its three-dimensional he knows [TS]

01:12:22   exactly where the planet is supposed to [TS]

01:12:24   be Kristen why do you not go there they [TS]

01:12:27   have spaceships but it and he's like [TS]

01:12:29   legitimately I just can't figure this [TS]

01:12:30   one out [TS]

01:12:31   yeah I know but that was like what was [TS]

01:12:33   the point of having that scene in the [TS]

01:12:34   movie to show that all we want is really [TS]

01:12:36   really really stupid like he got no new [TS]

01:12:39   information is it it's not there [TS]

01:12:42   it looks like it's been erased he [TS]

01:12:44   already told them gravity is point like [TS]

01:12:46   it's not even like a CSI scene where [TS]

01:12:47   they figure out like something by using [TS]

01:12:49   computers [TS]

01:12:50   I don't under the scenes in this movie [TS]

01:12:51   that just don't need to be there at all [TS]

01:12:54   and it's someone thought was a really [TS]

01:12:56   great idea like oh that the mind of a [TS]

01:12:58   child is going to tell us some insight [TS]

01:13:00   now [TS]

01:13:00   nope he's gonna tell you exactly 13 [TS]

01:13:02   year-old know and by doing that he will [TS]

01:13:04   make you appear dumber than [TS]

01:13:06   three-year-old because you are it does [TS]

01:13:08   give a chance for you to slag and by [TS]

01:13:10   saying he's lost a planet that I was [TS]

01:13:11   impressed by the efficiency of their [TS]

01:13:13   library system we just have to say the [TS]

01:13:14   name of a planet say it's a Kamino [TS]

01:13:17   and they can immediately say that [TS]

01:13:19   doesn't exist now we're asking how it's [TS]

01:13:21   spelled the library was one of the few [TS]

01:13:23   sort of lazy visual design because the [TS]

01:13:26   visual design these movies like the [TS]

01:13:27   ships and everything is not I i think [TS]

01:13:28   it's reasonably good but the library [TS]

01:13:30   they said how about we have big walls [TS]

01:13:32   like a lineup book spines yeah that [TS]

01:13:34   reads his library i'm pretty sure that [TS]

01:13:35   the visual design of this movie because [TS]

01:13:37   the whole thing that made the first [TS]

01:13:38   trilogy cool was that it was lived in [TS]

01:13:40   this landspeeders look call me that [TS]

01:13:43   again this is supposed to be like the [TS]

01:13:44   guilty want to give them license to go [TS]

01:13:46   with I'm just saying like a library [TS]

01:13:48   having light up book spines that is too [TS]

01:13:50   lazy [TS]

01:13:50   sorry do I think we go back to New [TS]

01:13:52   briefly and we meet then there's the new [TS]

01:13:55   queen who is in the same it's like they [TS]

01:13:57   get to reuse the sets and they got the [TS]

01:13:59   guy with the with the goatee and it's [TS]

01:14:01   full of a planet full of old people and [TS]

01:14:03   old stuff and of course they were ruled [TS]

01:14:04   by gun girls [TS]

01:14:06   yeah don't be an Anakin Skywalker yeah [TS]

01:14:11   creepy i like when they're walking when [TS]

01:14:13   they're walking down the walkway and [TS]

01:14:14   have some more sterling dialogue like I [TS]

01:14:16   agree i think the Republic needs you I'm [TS]

01:14:18   glad you chose to serve and seen thank [TS]

01:14:21   you for like thank you for expressing [TS]

01:14:22   those sentiments in such a dry boring [TS]

01:14:25   fashion is this where your boat is John [TS]

01:14:27   reason I think it's somewhere around [TS]

01:14:28   here like they're talking about like she [TS]

01:14:31   says that she wasn't in the legislative [TS]

01:14:33   use and she wanted to go in the Senate [TS]

01:14:35   and additives like yes i agree i think [TS]

01:14:38   the Republic needs you [TS]

01:14:39   I was glad you chose to serve end of [TS]

01:14:41   seeing like that's it that that's it [TS]

01:14:43   said it sounds like an important word [TS]

01:14:46   i'm actually really thinking about the [TS]

01:14:47   new political system now [TS]

01:14:50   yeah she said I wasn't the youngest [TS]

01:14:52   queen ever elected so there were younger [TS]

01:14:55   Queens that her and they might never [TS]

01:14:58   have Kings I think this is a planet [TS]

01:15:01   that's always ruled by young teenage [TS]

01:15:03   girls [TS]

01:15:04   yes I green if I mean that the plan also [TS]

01:15:07   fell apart too so i would like to [TS]

01:15:09   believe that that that they have decided [TS]

01:15:11   that the wave for them to rule without [TS]

01:15:13   being uncovered by up like political [TS]

01:15:16   dealings and things is having an [TS]

01:15:17   innocent a preteen girl sit on the [TS]

01:15:20   throne for a while and not do much [TS]

01:15:22   because there's the guy with the goatee [TS]

01:15:24   there's one scene where they tried to [TS]

01:15:25   establish the sort of tension in the [TS]

01:15:28   romantic relationship is sort of a [TS]

01:15:30   sparring type thing [TS]

01:15:31   like a han Leia thing where they're like [TS]

01:15:32   I think we should go for the lake [TS]

01:15:33   country for security and they have this [TS]

01:15:35   disagreement or whatever and again [TS]

01:15:36   everything that everything in this movie [TS]

01:15:38   I can put up on the big board saying I [TS]

01:15:41   can see what they're trying to do in the [TS]

01:15:43   scene they're trying to make this [TS]

01:15:44   relationship like it you know they're [TS]

01:15:46   attracted to each other but they also [TS]

01:15:48   have a little bit of witty verbal [TS]

01:15:49   sparring is sparring is a form of [TS]

01:15:51   flirting or whatever and it totally [TS]

01:15:52   falls on its face it does not work the [TS]

01:15:55   writing is bad does not make me think [TS]

01:15:56   any of the characters are likable or [TS]

01:15:58   interesting or clever in any way they [TS]

01:16:01   just it makes and look more petulant it [TS]

01:16:03   makes her look stupid for tolerating his [TS]

01:16:05   petulance and it just it totally fails [TS]

01:16:08   and like I i wish i could take all these [TS]

01:16:10   scenes like pin them up and say this [TS]

01:16:13   scene was supposed to this and didn't [TS]

01:16:14   seem as opposed to this and didn't and I [TS]

01:16:16   don't know what's worse the seams with a [TS]

01:16:17   talk and exposition and sit on couches [TS]

01:16:19   or the scenes where you can tell what [TS]

01:16:21   they're trying to do and they totally [TS]

01:16:23   family just move on to like well I guess [TS]

01:16:25   we didn't pull it off next scene please [TS]

01:16:26   let nothing be done we'll just take it [TS]

01:16:29   as it is and hope you forget camino [TS]

01:16:31   llego tu camino it's very rainy this is [TS]

01:16:33   a planet that's rainy there's lots of [TS]

01:16:34   water [TS]

01:16:35   they're also cloners they're here [TS]

01:16:37   they're cloners big cloners lots of [TS]

01:16:39   green identically tall implausibly [TS]

01:16:41   skinny long-necked yes camino aliens are [TS]

01:16:44   these tall skinny white aliens in these [TS]

01:16:47   in these long white corridors i remember [TS]

01:16:51   watching this movie the first time in [TS]

01:16:52   thinking I can i really like the look [TS]

01:16:54   and the art direction of the Camino [TS]

01:16:57   scenes that it's rainy it's kind of [TS]

01:16:59   atmospheric it's this very like 2001 [TS]

01:17:02   almost or some of the scenes in in the [TS]

01:17:05   original trilogy that it's the kind of [TS]

01:17:07   like all white aesthetic and I thought [TS]

01:17:09   the aliens were interesting and strange [TS]

01:17:11   and they have strange voices and I godly [TS]

01:17:14   never look like they belong in the scene [TS]

01:17:16   to me [TS]

01:17:16   yeah yeah always it was the humans the [TS]

01:17:19   humans who don't look like they're [TS]

01:17:20   standing on anything there they're not [TS]

01:17:21   even planted on ya just in the green [TS]

01:17:23   screen it's a pleasant cartoon to watch [TS]

01:17:25   yes I liked it originally but but [TS]

01:17:29   watching it back this time I was like oh [TS]

01:17:30   it's really not that good i was hoping [TS]

01:17:32   that this would be the thing that I [TS]

01:17:34   could be like oh yeah the white [TS]

01:17:36   long-necked aliens on the rain planet [TS]

01:17:38   that will be fine at like the big waves [TS]

01:17:40   and the big creature that the guys [TS]

01:17:42   riding on the back up [TS]

01:17:42   I like to see the movie featuring those [TS]

01:17:44   guys out of like Avatar before avatar [TS]

01:17:46   and I think the idea of the planet where [TS]

01:17:48   it's rainy and dark all-time in their [TS]

01:17:49   gigantic waves is moody and atmosphere [TS]

01:17:51   gets to bed it happen to be you know you [TS]

01:17:53   got trapped in the middle of episode 2 [TS]

01:17:54   and can i say that obi-wan is among his [TS]

01:17:57   things that he's not skillful at playing [TS]

01:17:59   along [TS]

01:18:00   not yet you still fighting there's a [TS]

01:18:01   whole lot of like yeah well we expected [TS]

01:18:04   you want you expected me oh yes yes you [TS]

01:18:06   did [TS]

01:18:07   we hope you'll enjoy the army you [TS]

01:18:09   ordered the the re oh yeah oh yeah the [TS]

01:18:12   are you going on about the army yes oh [TS]

01:18:14   yes please tell me who ordered that army [TS]

01:18:17   just to refresh my memory of these [TS]

01:18:19   cloners are very not very careful this [TS]

01:18:21   must be like oh you would think they'd [TS]

01:18:23   be a little bit more careful decisions [TS]

01:18:24   but like it's the problem we're talking [TS]

01:18:26   about the Anakin not being a hero [TS]

01:18:27   what does obi-wan do this heroic he sent [TS]

01:18:29   here to do something heroic like go [TS]

01:18:31   figure out find this bounty hunter [TS]

01:18:32   whatever find him [TS]

01:18:34   how does obi-wan succeed in his mission [TS]

01:18:35   through his coming through his skill [TS]

01:18:37   through you know its cleverness to [TS]

01:18:39   through his brute-force now he just [TS]

01:18:41   Falls ass-backwards into it because the [TS]

01:18:43   scripture says you some luck he shows I [TS]

01:18:45   luck they put him in he does a bad job [TS]

01:18:48   of hiding everything I may just he'll [TS]

01:18:49   like what he didn't he wasn't here oh we [TS]

01:18:51   didn't do anything heroic he was just [TS]

01:18:53   there you could have you gonna send r2 [TS]

01:18:54   and r2 would have been as successful in [TS]

01:18:56   this mission [TS]

01:18:56   yeah it's true [TS]

01:19:00   yeah except as long as they weren't [TS]

01:19:01   centipedes around this is where i had to [TS]

01:19:03   stop the first time by the way that yeah [TS]

01:19:04   but we got to learn the secret of the [TS]

01:19:07   stormtroopers which is that they're all [TS]

01:19:09   Boba Fett's father [TS]

01:19:10   no no no [TS]

01:19:14   yeah so i have this later when that when [TS]

01:19:16   we when we load up on stormtroopers but [TS]

01:19:18   i can mention it now which is the clone [TS]

01:19:19   troopers on one level it explains why [TS]

01:19:21   store stormtroopers are so uniform and [TS]

01:19:24   so lame because they're they've been [TS]

01:19:26   engineered to follow orders and [TS]

01:19:28   apparently the miss your target little [TS]

01:19:30   things but I really don't like this red [TS]

01:19:31   come I always always liked the fact that [TS]

01:19:33   the storm troopers were you know scary [TS]

01:19:35   shock troops for the Empire even though [TS]

01:19:37   yeah they don't shoot as well and they [TS]

01:19:39   killed their killed easily but here [TS]

01:19:41   we've just backed it all out to being [TS]

01:19:42   these kind of like genetically [TS]

01:19:44   engineered in order to be pliable [TS]

01:19:47   versions of Jango Fett well you have [TS]

01:19:51   like the droid racism this is the clone [TS]

01:19:53   racism because all right so they're [TS]

01:19:54   genetically identical but so were twins [TS]

01:19:56   that's why are we spoke this is the [TS]

01:19:58   excusing the fact that like we're gonna [TS]

01:20:00   kill these guys later but don't feel bad [TS]

01:20:02   they're just clones they're absolutely a [TS]

01:20:03   hundred percent you been engineered to [TS]

01:20:05   followers and apply I know start [TS]

01:20:07   seatbelt but they're just they're in [TS]

01:20:08   there as human as any other human and [TS]

01:20:11   it's not like I think the Empire [TS]

01:20:13   archived on the Empire's evil and all [TS]

01:20:14   that stuff but it's like in the movie [TS]

01:20:15   this is done to excuse later the death [TS]

01:20:18   of these things like that we don't care [TS]

01:20:19   about like when and hops off the the [TS]

01:20:21   thing and the clones were piloting their [TS]

01:20:22   blow up that we don't linger on that [TS]

01:20:24   it's like well they're just clones a [TS]

01:20:25   million that's not a big deal and I [TS]

01:20:27   think it's made worse it's made worse by [TS]

01:20:28   the clone wars television series which [TS]

01:20:30   is actually much better than any of [TS]

01:20:32   these movies and that really humanizes [TS]

01:20:34   the clones and shows what it's like to [TS]

01:20:36   be cloned going up but like it's it's so [TS]

01:20:39   terrible for me to see how they treat [TS]

01:20:41   clones and it seems odd to me that we [TS]

01:20:43   have to watch boba fett watch his father [TS]

01:20:45   died later because he just ends up going [TS]

01:20:47   into the same line of work as his father [TS]

01:20:49   being a bounty hunter so it's not much [TS]

01:20:51   of an origin story but it strikes me as [TS]

01:20:54   odd that after his father's dead clones [TS]

01:20:57   of his father are on every planet in the [TS]

01:21:00   system [TS]

01:21:00   yeah yeah they're not his dad but yeah [TS]

01:21:03   they're the modified ones they're [TS]

01:21:05   mentally they've been mentally [TS]

01:21:07   handicapped isn't that what they say on [TS]

01:21:09   communities that they've grown [TS]

01:21:10   yeah they just been made compliant yeah [TS]

01:21:13   but for the kid [TS]

01:21:15   if you ever see a stormtrooper without [TS]

01:21:16   his helmet on oh my god that's dad [TS]

01:21:19   it looks like your dad well but but it [TS]

01:21:21   looks like him too because he's also a [TS]

01:21:23   clone of his dance is going to grow up [TS]

01:21:24   to look exactly like his father that's [TS]

01:21:26   why he's so messed up in here it comes [TS]

01:21:28   it's it's not really his father it's his [TS]

01:21:30   it's his brother it's his twin really [TS]

01:21:32   its yeah that the clone thing when it [TS]

01:21:35   really got to me was at the end where I [TS]

01:21:37   realized hey we're supposed to be [TS]

01:21:39   rooting for the Jedi who are willingly [TS]

01:21:40   sending living beings who have been [TS]

01:21:43   genetically engineered to be compliant [TS]

01:21:44   into battle to be killed slaughtered by [TS]

01:21:48   a bunch of robots and the clone wars TV [TS]

01:21:50   series that relationship between the [TS]

01:21:52   Jedi and the clones is like that tension [TS]

01:21:54   is five kills me that the cartoon [TS]

01:21:57   network show us so much more nuanced and [TS]

01:21:58   interest in these than these [TS]

01:21:59   multi-million dollar movies but the Jedi [TS]

01:22:02   have a relationship with the leaders of [TS]

01:22:04   the clone armies and I think I kind of [TS]

01:22:06   read in the television series the Jedi [TS]

01:22:08   feel kind of bad [TS]

01:22:10   what about this whole were commanding [TS]

01:22:11   you and we're in this together and [TS]

01:22:13   they're like you could have done [TS]

01:22:14   something like that in this movie to [TS]

01:22:16   show the Jedi were uncomfortable with [TS]

01:22:17   this that they had a relationship with [TS]

01:22:19   them in battle that didn't treat them [TS]

01:22:20   just like a machine that you can give [TS]

01:22:22   orders to it because it kind of makes [TS]

01:22:23   sense that the humans treat the droids [TS]

01:22:25   just machines because they just believe [TS]

01:22:27   there's no strong AI and I was one [TS]

01:22:28   throwaway line in this movie that [TS]

01:22:29   actually kind of liked they said well [TS]

01:22:31   that machines that would think there [TS]

01:22:32   wouldn't be any of us here I'm like hey [TS]

01:22:34   that would be a blessing and B that's [TS]

01:22:35   kind of a clever comment down AI but you [TS]

01:22:38   know I've seen three c-3po and r2 and [TS]

01:22:40   they actually seem like the thinking to [TS]

01:22:41   me so maybe you should open your eyes [TS]

01:22:42   you fought in the Clone Wars while the [TS]

01:22:44   Clone Wars sound like they're really [TS]

01:22:45   cool no actually it's just we made lots [TS]

01:22:47   of photocopies and this one guy and made [TS]

01:22:50   a giant army it was sort of like [TS]

01:22:52   destroyed fighting drugs to be honest [TS]

01:22:53   with you wasn't a big deal [TS]

01:22:55   yeah and and then we ran them into the [TS]

01:22:56   drugs yet because the droids is the [TS]

01:22:58   excuse is like we don't care the first [TS]

01:22:59   movie that the droids are dying and i [TS]

01:23:01   will close vs towards don't you it's a [TS]

01:23:03   kind of a wash right dad that they're [TS]

01:23:04   all the same they died who came when i [TS]

01:23:06   say fought in the Clone Wars what I mean [TS]

01:23:08   mean is i SAT over here and watch that [TS]

01:23:11   movie at that right yeah it's like very [TS]

01:23:15   similar [TS]

01:23:15   I know what you were saying to yourself [TS]

01:23:17   when you saw how long this episode was [TS]

01:23:19   wow that's a long episode of the [TS]

01:23:22   uncomfortable i wonder if they manage to [TS]

01:23:24   squeeze episode 2 into a single episode [TS]

01:23:27   instead of doing it in two parts like [TS]

01:23:30   they did with all of the other Star Wars [TS]

01:23:32   movies [TS]

01:23:32   well no that didn't happen [TS]

01:23:35   join us next week for part two of our [TS]

01:23:38   discussion of Star Wars Episode two [TS]
