00:00:32   we're back to talk about another one of [TS]

00:00:33   the movies of hayao miyazaki the great [TS]

00:00:37   japanese animation writer director [TS]

00:00:39   producer everything we did a whole [TS]

00:00:41   episode about him that was just the only [TS]

00:00:44   two person episode ever of the cover was [TS]

00:00:46   just me and John talking about miyazaki [TS]

00:00:48   movies and then we did the whole episode [TS]

00:00:50   about my neighbor totoro with this very [TS]

00:00:54   panel and I wanted to get the band back [TS]

00:00:55   together because we had such a great [TS]

00:00:56   time to talk about my favorite miyazaki [TS]

00:00:59   movie [TS]

00:01:00   kiki's delivery service joining me to [TS]

00:01:02   talk about Kiki are John siracusa hi [TS]

00:01:05   John [TS]

00:01:06   I'm ready is I i have no doubt you're [TS]

00:01:09   ready we're not talking about Game of [TS]

00:01:11   Thrones you know that right away what we [TS]

00:01:13   know the scene where the cat murders [TS]

00:01:18   that guy is just wow it was surprising [TS]

00:01:21   gigi is coming that that's a steve lets [TS]

00:01:24   you heard there I Steve know it's so [TS]

00:01:27   good to be back in weird weird japan we [TS]

00:01:29   get is smitten [TS]

00:01:30   it's nice to be back here and and of [TS]

00:01:33   course are our fourth member of our [TS]

00:01:35   little of miyazaki movie club Marlon man [TS]

00:01:38   I hi guys how's it going good to have [TS]

00:01:40   you back [TS]

00:01:41   that's great to be here everybody watch [TS]

00:01:43   the movie has every seen the moving [TS]

00:01:44   going to watch the movie now seeing this [TS]

00:01:47   one couple three times [TS]

00:01:49   yeah yeah I watched it uh I watched it [TS]

00:01:53   today and i watched it with the Japanese [TS]

00:01:56   audio track on the subtitles for i think [TS]

00:01:58   only the second time although to be fair [TS]

00:02:00   it was the last two times I watched him [TS]

00:02:02   i watched it that way but i have it i [TS]

00:02:04   feel like i have the disney dub version [TS]

00:02:06   ingrained in my mind and that when we [TS]

00:02:08   talk about anime this is always the [TS]

00:02:10   issue is [TS]

00:02:11   no what's the real version and there [TS]

00:02:13   really isn't a real version unless you [TS]

00:02:14   speak Japanese because you're either [TS]

00:02:15   relying on the subtitles to tell you [TS]

00:02:17   things is what we had that moment where [TS]

00:02:19   my wife and I were watching it and [TS]

00:02:20   saying oh well that's different in the [TS]

00:02:22   in the in this version and we tried to [TS]

00:02:24   describe a certain level of authority to [TS]

00:02:26   the subtitles i'm not sure we can do [TS]

00:02:27   that either so you definitely cannot [TS]

00:02:30   because I don't know much Japanese but i [TS]

00:02:31   know enough Japanese to know when the [TS]

00:02:33   subtitles are incorrect very incorrect [TS]

00:02:35   often [TS]

00:02:35   yeah i was looking on i think i think [TS]

00:02:37   the wikipedia page even says like when I [TS]

00:02:40   was suspicious about the let's have some [TS]

00:02:42   hot chocolate and I was like that's [TS]

00:02:44   coffee that's because why is she putting [TS]

00:02:45   a lot of sugar in her hot chocolate is [TS]

00:02:48   the book that most coarse ground hot [TS]

00:02:50   chocolate I've ever seen in my life [TS]

00:02:53   it's actually oval teed is that the boys [TS]

00:02:54   in the town there's a disco right yeah [TS]

00:02:57   you don't catch that all this done [TS]

00:02:59   yeah well we can't have that would be [TS]

00:03:01   crazy and i have no idea what they [TS]

00:03:03   actually said but I even just minor [TS]

00:03:04   things where the subtitles always spell [TS]

00:03:06   things out where people are addressed by [TS]

00:03:08   name or title [TS]

00:03:09   okay dad I'll be right there and the [TS]

00:03:10   actual dialogue is ok I feel fortunate [TS]

00:03:15   in that apparently the there was quite a [TS]

00:03:18   bit of controversy over the original [TS]

00:03:19   disney dub of this although it [TS]

00:03:21   apparently was okayed by miyazaki and [TS]

00:03:24   dance studio ghibli is a good leader [TS]

00:03:27   jiggly jiggly [TS]

00:03:29   hey Benny you couldn't pronounce that [TS]

00:03:31   you can I just I just I was reading that [TS]

00:03:33   same thing today and it sounds like [TS]

00:03:35   before you fire off the Horn I guess [TS]

00:03:37   there was on there's 1i think pretty [TS]

00:03:40   important plot point that sounds like it [TS]

00:03:42   was completely different and yeah yeah [TS]

00:03:45   yeahs the cat a cat related blood point [TS]

00:03:47   captain yes exactly [TS]

00:03:49   that's a really important one that [TS]

00:03:51   changes the movie without what I had was [TS]

00:03:53   it turns out i guess the 2010 disney dub [TS]

00:03:56   where they actually yes scaled back some [TS]

00:03:58   of the bombass that they added in and [TS]

00:04:01   got rid of that particular messed up [TS]

00:04:04   plot point and it works a lot better now [TS]

00:04:06   i think and that's not the version i [TS]

00:04:08   have i've got the you know whatever the [TS]

00:04:10   previous DVD is what i have and this is [TS]

00:04:12   a movie also that has been released on [TS]

00:04:13   blu-ray in essentially every country in [TS]

00:04:16   the world except the United States so [TS]

00:04:18   far as i can tell [TS]

00:04:19   so that's really nice thanks a lot [TS]

00:04:21   disney disney yeah it kills me i will we [TS]

00:04:26   didn't do this for a while because I was [TS]

00:04:27   just waiting for that blu-ray to come [TS]

00:04:28   out and it's like no no sign of it don't [TS]

00:04:31   know what's going on [TS]

00:04:32   once you once you get the gospel from [TS]

00:04:33   siracusa and decided that it's time to [TS]

00:04:35   watch it in whatever version you watch [TS]

00:04:37   subtitled instead of dubbed it ain't [TS]

00:04:40   easy to do by conventional means in the [TS]

00:04:42   u.s. almost say about that yeah well you [TS]

00:04:46   can buy me the DVD you can't buy the [TS]

00:04:48   disney DVD and watching japanese with [TS]

00:04:49   english subtitles and Howard Howard the [TS]

00:04:52   subtitles they get well and get your own [TS]

00:04:55   ego to like open subtitles what's your [TS]

00:04:57   go-to for that job [TS]

00:04:58   yeah fansubs usually are almost always [TS]

00:05:01   better than the official subtitles [TS]

00:05:03   because you can choose when you're [TS]

00:05:05   picking your fansubs you can pick the [TS]

00:05:06   pedantic fansubs who were going to do [TS]

00:05:08   literal translations and then it's gonna [TS]

00:05:10   read kind of like I mean it doesn't make [TS]

00:05:12   sense to pass the time but you could be [TS]

00:05:14   talking like that car [TS]

00:05:15   this is exactly the literal translation [TS]

00:05:17   of what they're saying you have to [TS]

00:05:18   figure out exactly like it would be like [TS]

00:05:20   a translation of some French think it [TS]

00:05:22   would be like a lightning delivery mail [TS]

00:05:24   and be like I think they mean email you [TS]

00:05:26   know think that's you have to figure [TS]

00:05:28   that way or you can do the fan subs are [TS]

00:05:30   trying to catch the spirit of adore you [TS]

00:05:31   mean you can just pick your fansub crew [TS]

00:05:33   who you think does a good job I and get [TS]

00:05:36   the experience you want out of it but it [TS]

00:05:38   sounds like the subs on the disney [TS]

00:05:39   version are based on the script for the [TS]

00:05:42   the original dub that was only available [TS]

00:05:45   on a laserdisc and on like Japanese [TS]

00:05:47   airplane and so it's not based on the [TS]

00:05:50   actual like it its it's got like oh the [TS]

00:05:53   humanity which is not you notice that [TS]

00:05:56   was in the subs of mine and I think it's [TS]

00:05:58   yeah it's not in the dub it was enraged [TS]

00:06:01   out of a job that I saw although i guess [TS]

00:06:03   it was in the original one [TS]

00:06:04   let's see the thing with all these [TS]

00:06:06   movies is like movies that are are aimed [TS]

00:06:08   at children are good for children if you [TS]

00:06:10   have children you will find yourself [TS]

00:06:11   inevitably watching the doubles because [TS]

00:06:13   little children can't read yeah and even [TS]

00:06:16   though i've had my children watch many [TS]

00:06:17   subtitled movies where I pipe literally [TS]

00:06:19   sat on the couch and read them the [TS]

00:06:20   subtitles and just have them watch it [TS]

00:06:22   that way [TS]

00:06:22   most of the time to watch in English and [TS]

00:06:24   so at this point I've seen this movie [TS]

00:06:25   dubbed more times than I've seen it [TS]

00:06:27   subtitled by far because my kids used to [TS]

00:06:29   watch it over and over and over and over [TS]

00:06:30   again and i have to say as far as [TS]

00:06:32   dubs go this is a pretty good dub all [TS]

00:06:35   things considered I mean it's very [TS]

00:06:37   different from the original version and [TS]

00:06:38   in the beginning I resented it because [TS]

00:06:40   of that but like totoro there is a [TS]

00:06:42   certain charm to the dub to this movie [TS]

00:06:45   Matthew Lawrence notwithstanding I like [TS]

00:06:47   the fact that the second that this 2010 [TS]

00:06:49   DVD doesn't you know doesn't use the [TS]

00:06:52   disney disney pop songs that were [TS]

00:06:57   inserted at the beginning and the end [TS]

00:06:58   and goes back to the Japanese songs and [TS]

00:07:00   right because that kind of rubbed me the [TS]

00:07:01   wrong way there are a lot of there are a [TS]

00:07:04   lot of differences in this movie between [TS]

00:07:06   the the English dub and and just reading [TS]

00:07:09   with the subtitles i think the cat is [TS]

00:07:11   actually the biggest one right because [TS]

00:07:12   GG right is this high-pitched you know I [TS]

00:07:15   have a cat kind of voice and it's phil [TS]

00:07:17   hartman in English up and Gigi says so [TS]

00:07:20   much less to yeah he says a lot and he's [TS]

00:07:23   a wisecracker an animal sidekick and me [TS]

00:07:25   that's kind of a big deal really because [TS]

00:07:27   I mean isn't he effectively supposed to [TS]

00:07:29   be sort of the representation of kikis [TS]

00:07:31   childhood there are sort of immature [TS]

00:07:34   thoughts on court according to that fact [TS]

00:07:37   that we are apparently read on the [TS]

00:07:38   internet yes but I'm I don't entirely [TS]

00:07:40   like that that maybe have been our [TS]

00:07:42   intention when a tournament to phil [TS]

00:07:43   hartman like it it's totally different [TS]

00:07:46   and you can you can reject it and say [TS]

00:07:48   well that's not how this movie is [TS]

00:07:49   supposed to be but I still feel like [TS]

00:07:50   phil hartman works as phil hartman in [TS]

00:07:52   the context of the dub it works but it [TS]

00:07:54   is real different I mean we're watching [TS]

00:07:56   it in in the subtitled version uses a [TS]

00:08:01   lot less it has a much more feminine [TS]

00:08:03   voice I mean I guess I'm i don't i'm [TS]

00:08:06   guessing GG still of a gendered boy I [TS]

00:08:09   don't know [TS]

00:08:10   well I is he has children later Lily it [TS]

00:08:13   seems pretty clearly to be a girl [TS]

00:08:14   well be normative the money shot circuit [TS]

00:08:20   city is not feeling adoption service is [TS]

00:08:22   also part of her it was the fifties and [TS]

00:08:25   world war two hadn't happened was a [TS]

00:08:26   complicated time [TS]

00:08:27   but-but-but-but another sigh I don't [TS]

00:08:30   want you know go crazy here but there's [TS]

00:08:31   a lot that hinges on like what you [TS]

00:08:33   think's going on with that cat and she [TS]

00:08:35   told anybody says a lot less and GT [TS]

00:08:38   really reads less as a wiseacre than [TS]

00:08:40   english version and much more is like [TS]

00:08:42   kind of [TS]

00:08:44   overabundance of caution not a pessimist [TS]

00:08:47   exactly but almost like the kind of [TS]

00:08:48   nagging like what super-ego I guess you [TS]

00:08:51   know that's kind of like telling her you [TS]

00:08:53   will be careful what you're doing here [TS]

00:08:54   but he goes with the flow much more in [TS]

00:08:55   the original Phil Hartman does fill the [TS]

00:08:58   role of you know [TS]

00:08:59   c-3po oh my goodness should be going to [TS]

00:09:01   the asteroid field blah blah right but [TS]

00:09:04   there's almost no way that you can [TS]

00:09:05   construe him as sort of a part of her [TS]

00:09:07   subconscious and in that feeling away [TS]

00:09:09   anyways she does not have that sort of [TS]

00:09:11   wisecracker e-science and that's what [TS]

00:09:14   that's what he's offering seems to be in [TS]

00:09:15   a different movie because her reaction [TS]

00:09:17   him is not the appropriate reaction that [TS]

00:09:19   you would be you would expect to have 44 [TS]

00:09:21   you know for his character and in the [TS]

00:09:22   dubbed version you know he's great [TS]

00:09:24   though I i gotta say i absolutely love [TS]

00:09:26   his character in this even though he's [TS]

00:09:28   basically a feline Paul Lynde in fact I [TS]

00:09:29   didn't even recognize the magical [TS]

00:09:31   apartment [TS]

00:09:31   originally I was trying to place the [TS]

00:09:33   voices like a screw it i'm gonna go with [TS]

00:09:35   Poland and that worked out fine for me [TS]

00:09:38   because he gets all the best lines i [TS]

00:09:39   think this is his last voiceover [TS]

00:09:41   performance that he did I mean the last [TS]

00:09:43   performance it was was those last [TS]

00:09:45   episode of newsradio but i think this [TS]

00:09:46   was his last voiceover and you know yeah [TS]

00:09:49   there are moments where you can tell [TS]

00:09:51   like like there's the scene where at the [TS]

00:09:54   very beginning where keys mom wants her [TS]

00:09:57   to use use her broom once once Kiki use [TS]

00:10:03   her old broom and not this new broom the [TS]

00:10:05   key is made and kikis like it's old its [TS]

00:10:09   stupid you know it's very teenager kind [TS]

00:10:11   of thing to say and in the original the [TS]

00:10:14   least what the sub says is she turns to [TS]

00:10:17   G&G is like yeah you should use your [TS]

00:10:19   mom's room and in the enemy in the dub [TS]

00:10:22   it's like I don't know i think your [TS]

00:10:24   broom is kind of crappy you should you [TS]

00:10:26   you know let's take let's take the old [TS]

00:10:28   one right it's just your broom is nice [TS]

00:10:30   use your moms so intent yeah yeah yeah [TS]

00:10:33   so it's a different it's just very [TS]

00:10:35   different where he's he's acting as a [TS]

00:10:36   character whereas in the original it [TS]

00:10:38   does read sort of like this is the you [TS]

00:10:40   know I know you're rebelling but you [TS]

00:10:42   should just take it from your mother go [TS]

00:10:43   ahead it's just different very different [TS]

00:10:46   we could probably talk in large broad [TS]

00:10:49   strokes about the story the story's [TS]

00:10:51   pretty terrible without ruining the [TS]

00:10:52   whole thing anything [TS]

00:10:53   yeah let's let's little not much as [TS]

00:10:56   usual after two not [TS]

00:10:58   much not much happened that's what I [TS]

00:11:00   said on our first miyazaki podcast I [TS]

00:11:02   said that this is one of those movies [TS]

00:11:04   where there is no real antagonist it's [TS]

00:11:07   just sort of things happen and as I said [TS]

00:11:10   at the time sort of like the weather the [TS]

00:11:12   weather is an antagonist here and [TS]

00:11:14   circumstance only very briefly I mean at [TS]

00:11:17   any any given thing that would probably [TS]

00:11:19   be like a horrible you know a time for [TS]

00:11:21   something awful to happen in a regular [TS]

00:11:23   disney movie or some other animated film [TS]

00:11:25   is more or less resolved in a couple of [TS]

00:11:26   seconds like his propeller takes off and [TS]

00:11:29   you're expecting like something horrible [TS]

00:11:30   to happen and you know next scene it [TS]

00:11:33   cuts to the next scene is just sitting [TS]

00:11:34   there with a propeller it's always [TS]

00:11:37   realistic in a way that we said this in [TS]

00:11:39   total episode that in the way the total [TS]

00:11:41   was realistic not so much and that is [TS]

00:11:43   magical flying things or that they're [TS]

00:11:44   witches or anything like that but the [TS]

00:11:46   characters behavior a little evil ways [TS]

00:11:48   and the things that happened or sort of [TS]

00:11:49   the mundane things that happen in life [TS]

00:11:50   sometimes your mother gets sick [TS]

00:11:52   sometimes people travel from place to [TS]

00:11:54   place and pick vegetables and move into [TS]

00:11:56   an old house sometimes you move to a new [TS]

00:11:58   town you meet people you make friends [TS]

00:12:01   you get your feelings hurt like but [TS]

00:12:03   nothing it with the exception of the [TS]

00:12:04   very end of the movie nothing out of the [TS]

00:12:06   ordinary that might not happen in real [TS]

00:12:08   life happens in this movie and you're [TS]

00:12:09   always expecting it to be like well this [TS]

00:12:11   has to be heightened drama or [TS]

00:12:13   exaggerated action or surely something [TS]

00:12:15   terrible or amazing or fantastic is [TS]

00:12:17   going to happen and again until the very [TS]

00:12:20   end which is still vaguely plausible [TS]

00:12:21   kind of disaster type scenario it is [TS]

00:12:24   very sort of run-of-the-mill and that I [TS]

00:12:27   think is what draws me so much to this [TS]

00:12:28   movie is that it feels it feels more [TS]

00:12:32   like real life in a relaxed sort of way [TS]

00:12:34   that lets you connect with the things [TS]

00:12:36   that are happening you're just saying [TS]

00:12:37   all these things could have or have [TS]

00:12:38   happened to me with again with the [TS]

00:12:40   possible exception of the end even [TS]

00:12:42   though I'm not a witch or whatever i'm [TS]

00:12:44   just not accustomed to these these [TS]

00:12:45   gentle movements minutes every time I [TS]

00:12:48   see something like we see key lighting [TS]

00:12:50   the fire from the point of view inside [TS]

00:12:51   the oven and the grandmother is looking [TS]

00:12:53   on behind her sort of benevolently and I [TS]

00:12:55   I keep finding myself thinking look at [TS]

00:12:57   she's gonna push you in [TS]

00:12:58   yeah that all of you are so they can [TS]

00:13:00   burn the wig not not that kind of movie [TS]

00:13:02   I know but it's it's that kind of stuff [TS]

00:13:04   has been so ingrained for all the [TS]

00:13:06   animated features i watched my entire [TS]

00:13:07   life like something terrible is going to [TS]

00:13:09   happen to parents gonna die [TS]

00:13:11   you know she's gonna lean too far off [TS]

00:13:13   over the side of the bike and shred her [TS]

00:13:15   ear off on the road to heaven watching [TS]

00:13:17   watching these movies with my kids when [TS]

00:13:19   they were little and we we all watched [TS]

00:13:20   it as a family today with the subtitles [TS]

00:13:23   on which is fun because again they're [TS]

00:13:25   all they all can do it now but watching [TS]

00:13:28   when they were little you know my both [TS]

00:13:31   of my kids my son especially but both of [TS]

00:13:32   them when they were like really scary [TS]

00:13:35   moments are there were really bad people [TS]

00:13:36   they would hide or they wouldn't like it [TS]

00:13:38   and one of the great things about these [TS]

00:13:40   miyazaki movies and especially about [TS]

00:13:42   Kiki is there's nothing like that in [TS]

00:13:45   here it's a great it's a really great [TS]

00:13:46   fun movie but there that that is not [TS]

00:13:48   there isn't a villain who is doing [TS]

00:13:51   villainous things it's just it's it's [TS]

00:13:53   very different and it ended you know the [TS]

00:13:55   whole movie feels different because of [TS]

00:13:57   it she has no enemy that she's bad right [TS]

00:14:00   at any point right yeah i don't know i [TS]

00:14:02   don't have enough to if it's an anime [TS]

00:14:04   thing but it definitely is like miyazaki [TS]

00:14:06   thing that they're very spacious about [TS]

00:14:08   making this story I mean one other way [TS]

00:14:10   that it's like totoro to me at least in [TS]

00:14:12   my own head is that you know childhood [TS]

00:14:15   growing up really your whole life but [TS]

00:14:17   especially up through your teen years [TS]

00:14:18   you're just constantly confronted with [TS]

00:14:20   things that just kind of makes sense and [TS]

00:14:22   you know and whether there's all kinds [TS]

00:14:24   of stuff especially intro we're like we [TS]

00:14:25   said before like did that really happen [TS]

00:14:27   or not know maybe it doesn't matter in [TS]

00:14:29   some ways in the movie it's just that [TS]

00:14:30   for a kid [TS]

00:14:31   there's so much mystery to stuff that [TS]

00:14:33   happens there's so many things that you [TS]

00:14:34   can't understand you try to base on a [TS]

00:14:36   previous experience and that [TS]

00:14:38   spaciousness of not having somebody [TS]

00:14:40   tried to poison you with an apple or not [TS]

00:14:41   trying to throw you into an oven [TS]

00:14:43   there's a lot of space for this to be [TS]

00:14:44   about the kind of personal terminally he [TS]

00:14:46   says as much i need i read one of the [TS]

00:14:48   things an introduction to the maybe the [TS]

00:14:50   manga of this where he said you know [TS]

00:14:52   that this is it's it's not difficult to [TS]

00:14:54   go out and be on your own and make money [TS]

00:14:56   it's difficult to have like [TS]

00:14:58   self-realization until I grow up that's [TS]

00:15:00   the hard part and I think that's that [TS]

00:15:01   spaciousness really works in these [TS]

00:15:02   movies once you once you get past [TS]

00:15:04   expecting an anvil to fall on somebody [TS]

00:15:06   you know things like in the pacing of [TS]

00:15:09   this movie and most of his movies like [TS]

00:15:10   most anime it has a focus on kind of [TS]

00:15:12   sensory experiences as several many many [TS]

00:15:15   scenes in movies involved but even if [TS]

00:15:17   you just look at the pacing of like he [TS]

00:15:19   just showed three shots and that didn't [TS]

00:15:21   include the main character that had no [TS]

00:15:23   I'll our music going over them just as [TS]

00:15:25   sort of a way to transition you from one [TS]

00:15:27   day they weren't establishing shots or [TS]

00:15:28   whatever it's like so many scenes in [TS]

00:15:30   this movie if you tear it apart you're [TS]

00:15:32   like wait a second that like someone had [TS]

00:15:34   to sit there and draw that scene that [TS]

00:15:35   scene in that scene and between this 60 [TS]

00:15:38   seconds there's no dialogue and like not [TS]

00:15:40   like why is that even in the movies like [TS]

00:15:41   we got to make it fast you gotta cut you [TS]

00:15:43   have tighter it's got to be action [TS]

00:15:44   action we got a dialogue scene right you [TS]

00:15:46   know and this movie is not like that and [TS]

00:15:48   and i think the lingering on those [TS]

00:15:51   things it's not it's not like a Malik [TS]

00:15:52   film like he's not lingering on you like [TS]

00:15:54   a tree growing out from an acorn [TS]

00:15:55   something like it's not it's not that [TS]

00:15:57   level but it is very much influences the [TS]

00:16:00   pace and experience of watching this [TS]

00:16:02   movie maybe not for kids maybe only for [TS]

00:16:03   adults but i watch it and you know if I [TS]

00:16:05   haven't seen a movie in a long time i'm [TS]

00:16:07   just always amazed that sort of how it [TS]

00:16:09   how just unwind and just sort of rolls [TS]

00:16:12   out in front of you and it had its own [TS]

00:16:15   pace sort of at the pace of life instead [TS]

00:16:16   about the pace of like narrative there's [TS]

00:16:19   a particular scene in that in that vein [TS]

00:16:21   that really stood out for me which is [TS]

00:16:23   when there's very deliberate long seen [TS]

00:16:26   if Kiki at the bakery counter just [TS]

00:16:28   staring out the window sort of your [TS]

00:16:30   flight and reflections of people walking [TS]

00:16:32   by and see if it's there it's its total [TS]

00:16:34   silence and she's watching you know that [TS]

00:16:36   the boy on the bike pulls up and the [TS]

00:16:38   girl gets on the bike and drives on and [TS]

00:16:40   it's just it but that's it that's their [TS]

00:16:41   version of an action scene like we're [TS]

00:16:43   getting married of things like because [TS]

00:16:44   now it's like what happens [TS]

00:16:46   she's bored she's inside she has to work [TS]

00:16:48   the girl that the boy comes up in the [TS]

00:16:49   scooter the girl who's better dressed [TS]

00:16:51   than she is gets on the bike gets on the [TS]

00:16:53   bike sidesaddle and they go off together [TS]

00:16:55   and she remains inside like that and yes [TS]

00:16:57   there are many scenes in here that have [TS]

00:16:59   no dollar but that's like an action [TS]

00:17:00   scene is like oh we are developing the [TS]

00:17:02   character we're showing we are showing [TS]

00:17:03   how she feels [TS]

00:17:04   by showing what she sees even though she [TS]

00:17:06   has a slight expression the entire time [TS]

00:17:08   sort of like bringing bringing you into [TS]

00:17:10   the inner life of this girl without [TS]

00:17:11   giving you a voiceover even as an action [TS]

00:17:14   scene though I mean it's just so many [TS]

00:17:15   frames where there's just nothing [TS]

00:17:17   happening nothing's moving thats quiet [TS]

00:17:19   there's silence and you would never see [TS]

00:17:21   that many frames go by without something [TS]

00:17:22   happening in a an american animated film [TS]

00:17:25   and I love that about it i think it's [TS]

00:17:27   great i wrote that particular bit down [TS]

00:17:29   because it just struck me you know this [TS]

00:17:31   is so so different from what I'm used to [TS]

00:17:33   you know growing up watching handlebar [TS]

00:17:36   Berra cartoons & you think of the [TS]

00:17:38   running joke about how you keep running [TS]

00:17:39   past the same window over and over and [TS]

00:17:42   there's so much like unnecessary [TS]

00:17:44   I mean a positive way unnecessary luxury [TS]

00:17:46   to the pacing of the scenes but also the [TS]

00:17:49   incredible amount of detail and the [TS]

00:17:50   glistening water and stuff but I mean [TS]

00:17:52   how many cartoons have you watched where [TS]

00:17:54   it's just people eating for a few [TS]

00:17:57   seconds or like Kiki waking up and you [TS]

00:17:59   hear you when she wakes up in a room and [TS]

00:18:01   she hears i just noticed this time [TS]

00:18:03   watching it like I think it's that she [TS]

00:18:05   had like a boat going by and she rolls [TS]

00:18:07   over and look at the sheet uncovers GG [TS]

00:18:10   and she kind of stirs a little bit and [TS]

00:18:12   then crawls back under the sheet [TS]

00:18:14   it's just a delightful little little [TS]

00:18:15   tone not necessary to anything about [TS]

00:18:18   pushing the plot forward but you know in [TS]

00:18:20   the same way it's like you're saying [TS]

00:18:20   Steve the earlier Steve I think it's [TS]

00:18:23   hard for somebody like me to readjust [TS]

00:18:24   when you're expecting that ridiculous [TS]

00:18:26   amount of pacing but you know the the [TS]

00:18:28   scenery and the background and the [TS]

00:18:30   activity and that most mundane to you i [TS]

00:18:32   guess you could say is is really as I [TS]

00:18:35   want a character in the movie it's so [TS]

00:18:37   important that this not be pasted that [TS]

00:18:40   way and then when it does happen you get [TS]

00:18:41   to that amazing you know third act and [TS]

00:18:44   suddenly it's like an explosion of [TS]

00:18:46   activity it's like the end of totoro [TS]

00:18:47   you're like wow this is like a whole [TS]

00:18:48   different movie now there's stuff [TS]

00:18:49   happening really underscores that even [TS]

00:18:53   even in the middle of a the actual [TS]

00:18:54   action scenes they have for example when [TS]

00:18:56   they decide to do action even if it's [TS]

00:18:58   just like oh she's leaving home and [TS]

00:19:00   she's going along and she's like you [TS]

00:19:02   know floating on her broom and then it [TS]

00:19:03   starts to rain and that tiny sequence of [TS]

00:19:05   it starts to rain zoom along the top of [TS]

00:19:06   the thing going it's a couple seconds [TS]

00:19:08   long or whatever but they do a good job [TS]

00:19:10   again with going down the hill on the [TS]

00:19:11   bike leaning into the turns that is a [TS]

00:19:13   very well done exciting action scene [TS]

00:19:16   it's like boy where it's as if the [TS]

00:19:18   camera is like still and lingering in [TS]

00:19:20   common with the action scenes come the [TS]

00:19:22   camera knows exactly what to do to make [TS]

00:19:24   the action scenes exciting in short [TS]

00:19:26   bursts building up to the big finale on [TS]

00:19:27   but even in the middle like when they [TS]

00:19:28   when they need to do that they do it [TS]

00:19:30   very very well and you know and go back [TS]

00:19:33   to real life and it its it's like her [TS]

00:19:35   life where it's mostly just the mundane [TS]

00:19:37   part of living your life punctuated by [TS]

00:19:39   these significant events it's great that [TS]

00:19:41   they can they can do something that sort [TS]

00:19:43   of action-packed without necessarily [TS]

00:19:44   having a whole bunch of craziness going [TS]

00:19:47   on [TS]

00:19:48   like during that sequence where she [TS]

00:19:49   leaves home that you're talking about i [TS]

00:19:51   just made a note this flying sequence [TS]

00:19:53   actually feels dangerous and it really [TS]

00:19:54   does because they do such a good job of [TS]

00:19:56   making her seem like she's unsure on her [TS]

00:19:58   broom and she's clearly unbelievably [TS]

00:20:01   high up in the air and it just you watch [TS]

00:20:03   that and there's not that much going on [TS]

00:20:05   relatively on screen but yet you know i [TS]

00:20:07   was getting vertigo watching the thing I [TS]

00:20:10   liked to seen the the in terms of a [TS]

00:20:12   hanna-barbera style animation the thing [TS]

00:20:14   that i noticed i mean when she goes and [TS]

00:20:16   visits her friend painter in the [TS]

00:20:18   countryside I had that moment its like a [TS]

00:20:20   this is Miyazaki's like finally the [TS]

00:20:22   countryside I could do my all my totoro [TS]

00:20:24   stuff like a big trees and water [TS]

00:20:27   glistening and and you know that's nice [TS]

00:20:29   and and you know field stretching out to [TS]

00:20:32   heels in the background but early on [TS]

00:20:34   there's the scene where she's the first [TS]

00:20:36   person she encounters when she's on her [TS]

00:20:38   broom is this other witch who's who's [TS]

00:20:41   bitchy right she's like a nice night [TS]

00:20:43   isn't it well it was this terrible but [TS]

00:20:47   uh there's kiki is learning to fly and [TS]

00:20:50   at one point the the witch asked her to [TS]

00:20:53   turn off a radio and she reaches Davis [TS]

00:20:55   exact noted she reaches down to turn off [TS]

00:20:58   the radio and the broom Bob's down and [TS]

00:21:00   she has to compensate and get it back to [TS]

00:21:02   come back up because just the act of [TS]

00:21:04   leaning forward like that it's like [TS]

00:21:06   taking your hands off the steering wheel [TS]

00:21:07   it you know she's not an expert at [TS]

00:21:09   keeping level and then she bobs back up [TS]

00:21:11   and it's a little moment but it you know [TS]

00:21:14   that that's a lot of animation work to [TS]

00:21:16   do that and yet it feels so much more [TS]

00:21:18   real because then you realize she is [TS]

00:21:21   struggling to keep it together and you [TS]

00:21:24   know it's not easy for her but you know [TS]

00:21:26   again if you're coming quarters and as [TS]

00:21:29   an animator you would never show [TS]

00:21:31   something like that because it gives you [TS]

00:21:32   hints about the physics of flying broom [TS]

00:21:35   and you know and it's not in a straight [TS]

00:21:37   line and and yet we see it in in this [TS]

00:21:41   movie and and i love that i absolutely [TS]

00:21:44   love that that's the luxury of miyazaki [TS]

00:21:46   movies is that you know like so that [TS]

00:21:48   first of the miyazaki movies on is the [TS]

00:21:50   traditional ones they have beautifully [TS]

00:21:51   painted background which are more or [TS]

00:21:52   less static they may pan across them or [TS]

00:21:54   like zoom in on me [TS]

00:21:55   whatever right and those are beautiful [TS]

00:21:57   like paintings in and of themselves and [TS]

00:21:58   you have the character animation / and [TS]

00:22:00   you know no matter how minor the scene [TS]

00:22:02   in a feature-length miyazaki movie [TS]

00:22:04   that's no matter what the scene is some [TS]

00:22:07   person put their entire life and being [TS]

00:22:09   into that scene so I'm not the note that [TS]

00:22:11   i have in this is the but you have to [TS]

00:22:13   which is flying alongside each other and [TS]

00:22:15   then in a lesser movie any lesser [TS]

00:22:17   animated movie the two people will be [TS]

00:22:19   flying alongside each other and talking [TS]

00:22:21   and they would never be that Bob and [TS]

00:22:23   then if you watch it with the daily note [TS]

00:22:24   that has it she bobs when she adjusts [TS]

00:22:27   the radio when she comes back up she [TS]

00:22:29   really just her dress because she wants [TS]

00:22:31   to regain her composure so that you can [TS]

00:22:32   continue having a conversation and some [TS]

00:22:34   guy had to animate those you know 200 [TS]

00:22:37   frames of animation or whatever it is [TS]

00:22:39   and like eat he or she poured their [TS]

00:22:42   heart and soul into that animation and [TS]

00:22:44   thought about I mean occupy key frame to [TS]

00:22:46   do whatever and that like there are no [TS]

00:22:48   like oh and this is just a scene where [TS]

00:22:50   this dialogue so don't worry about it or [TS]

00:22:51   this isn't a big same route are going [TS]

00:22:53   better or in this scene bridge in this [TS]

00:22:55   scene we're just worried about the [TS]

00:22:56   background so don't worry about like [TS]

00:22:57   every single moment you know and that's [TS]

00:23:00   the luxury of these movies like you know [TS]

00:23:01   they just poured every ounce of time and [TS]

00:23:04   money and effort into it it's like the [TS]

00:23:06   you know this able to get apple hardware [TS]

00:23:08   whatever someone sweats over every [TS]

00:23:10   little detail in a future like miyazaki [TS]

00:23:12   someone supposed to every little detail [TS]

00:23:13   kids are not going to notice this but it [TS]

00:23:15   allows adults to rewatch these things [TS]

00:23:17   again and again and pick out new things [TS]

00:23:18   every time I saw that cumulative effect [TS]

00:23:20   what you're describing and you know it [TS]

00:23:22   when you're saying that i'm thinking [TS]

00:23:23   like in any other movie the two broom [TS]

00:23:25   sticks with literally be parallel and [TS]

00:23:27   equidistant the entire time the two [TS]

00:23:29   characters are talking and you know it [TS]

00:23:31   now I'm thinking about that more now and [TS]

00:23:33   I'm realizing like from through the [TS]

00:23:34   entire movie there's one thing that's [TS]

00:23:36   always sustained that adds to her [TS]

00:23:39   character something you don't see a lot [TS]

00:23:40   which is that she really has to [TS]

00:23:42   concentrate to fly you know usually [TS]

00:23:45   which hop and she's going on a chopper [TS]

00:23:47   and taking off and in this case where [TS]

00:23:48   you can really tell that it's taken [TS]

00:23:50   especially at the end when she's [TS]

00:23:51   actually like my favorite scene in the [TS]

00:23:52   movie where she's sweating because [TS]

00:23:54   you're spiring to try and be able to fly [TS]

00:23:56   which is going to mojo back [TS]

00:23:58   but that whole sense all the way through [TS]

00:24:00   that you know what a weird balance it is [TS]

00:24:02   though that we could see this 13 year [TS]

00:24:04   old girl who has trouble flying or never [TS]

00:24:06   liked that worried that she's gonna like [TS]

00:24:08   you know flying door [TS]

00:24:09   heller blade or something there's not [TS]

00:24:10   that constant sense of danger I'm kind [TS]

00:24:12   of worried when when she in the credits [TS]

00:24:14   when she's right in front of pacing [TS]

00:24:16   tambo and his little bicycle airplane i [TS]

00:24:18   have a little worried about hurting [TS]

00:24:20   people that someone actually yes [TS]

00:24:22   somebody's very enthusiastic kind of [TS]

00:24:24   just like just don't take your eyes off [TS]

00:24:25   the ball here to here you get chopped up [TS]

00:24:27   is a very enthusiastic young man that's [TS]

00:24:29   what I worry about it but not until that [TS]

00:24:31   point I think my biggest moment of [TS]

00:24:32   concern is in that end sequence where [TS]

00:24:34   she's getting along maybe a foot above [TS]

00:24:35   the ground [TS]

00:24:36   oh yeah that there's sort of a star wars [TS]

00:24:39   trench sequence that goes on really [TS]

00:24:40   really just like she's on a skateboard [TS]

00:24:42   at that moment right she's like she [TS]

00:24:44   doesn't land on the ground but she's [TS]

00:24:46   she's flying inches off the ground and [TS]

00:24:49   the camera is low downright the [TS]

00:24:51   perspective there is work where we're [TS]

00:24:53   low at ground level and we're watching [TS]

00:24:55   her just kind of skitter across the the [TS]

00:24:58   the street to get to that to the airship [TS]

00:25:01   she's got that stance of like those [TS]

00:25:03   knobs that drive there [TS]

00:25:04   suzuki motorcycles down the freeway with [TS]

00:25:06   their bare feet up on the back of the [TS]

00:25:08   tail [TS]

00:25:08   also she's um I early on talking about [TS]

00:25:12   how she flies in the way it works when [TS]

00:25:13   she first takes off she you know she [TS]

00:25:15   kind of goes sideways and she hits a [TS]

00:25:17   tree and then she hits another tree and [TS]

00:25:19   and in the ne in the subtitle version [TS]

00:25:22   you see the she you see you go over one [TS]

00:25:26   tree right and and uh and then another [TS]

00:25:29   tree shake so there's an implied [TS]

00:25:30   collision and then the father says oh [TS]

00:25:34   she's you know now she's over the lake [TS]

00:25:36   she'll be fine but you don't see you [TS]

00:25:38   don't you don't see her take off into [TS]

00:25:39   the horizon flying straight like any [TS]

00:25:41   other movie would write like she's [TS]

00:25:43   writing herself now and she's figured [TS]

00:25:44   out how to fly [TS]

00:25:45   no she was nowhere in sight she's not [TS]

00:25:47   going straight she's going sideways she [TS]

00:25:48   doesn't have it together and then and [TS]

00:25:50   it's funny because then you see your go [TS]

00:25:52   past the one tree and you're like well [TS]

00:25:54   now what and the other tree shakes and [TS]

00:25:56   you're like no she's got again but in [TS]

00:25:57   its much played much broad much more [TS]

00:26:01   broadly in the Disney dub version where [TS]

00:26:03   the whole way you can actually hear i [TS]

00:26:05   think GG and there's a little bit of [TS]

00:26:06   Kiki kind of like you know not that dro [TS]

00:26:09   there we go again right there's there's [TS]

00:26:11   many ways but more dialogue in the [TS]

00:26:13   american version because the Japanese [TS]

00:26:14   versions of all these films they trust [TS]

00:26:16   the audience understand what's going on [TS]

00:26:18   about having characters you know what [TS]

00:26:20   having characters just you know spell [TS]

00:26:22   out what's going on or have the [TS]

00:26:24   reassuring line of dialogue to make sure [TS]

00:26:25   you know what's happening or that you [TS]

00:26:27   know what here comes with it [TS]

00:26:28   that's that seems to be the way they [TS]

00:26:31   take anime and bring it to America like [TS]

00:26:32   well obviously we need our characters to [TS]

00:26:34   talk more soon as characters aren't on [TS]

00:26:35   the screen and they can add lines to [TS]

00:26:37   them because the mouth what you want to [TS]

00:26:38   see the mouth moving like they're [TS]

00:26:39   off-screen it's like yeah start putting [TS]

00:26:41   a dialogue so the kids can follow along [TS]

00:26:43   and that the Japanese movies just trust [TS]

00:26:45   kids and adults and everyone to be able [TS]

00:26:47   to understand what's going without [TS]

00:26:48   saying anything and took to their credit [TS]

00:26:50   like they have like long sequences in [TS]

00:26:52   this movie where for example she [TS]

00:26:54   delivers the herring pine the rain and [TS]

00:26:57   it's wet and tombos waiting for her and [TS]

00:26:58   she comes back home and she has a couple [TS]

00:27:00   words with a sauna going up the stairs [TS]

00:27:02   but there's a long sequence where she [TS]

00:27:04   just kind of like silently returning and [TS]

00:27:08   walked into her room and then walks up [TS]

00:27:10   to her bed and then does the big flop on [TS]

00:27:12   the bed because again totally realistic [TS]

00:27:14   and that whole long sequence doesn't [TS]

00:27:16   have any words or even facial [TS]

00:27:18   expressions let you know what she's [TS]

00:27:19   thinking but they trusted like you will [TS]

00:27:21   understand her situation you know what [TS]

00:27:23   she's thinking when she flops headfirst [TS]

00:27:24   onto the bed it is not a shock because [TS]

00:27:26   that's exactly what we all expected to [TS]

00:27:28   do at that point because we are with her [TS]

00:27:29   emotionally through the entire sequence [TS]

00:27:30   and it's not because there was a [TS]

00:27:32   voiceover or there was yelling or [TS]

00:27:34   screaming back and forth or anything [TS]

00:27:35   like that [TS]

00:27:35   also i have a twelve-year-old daughter [TS]

00:27:36   and I've seen that happen in my house [TS]

00:27:39   narrow in fact my daughter was like oh I [TS]

00:27:42   do that Maggie [TS]

00:27:43   yup yup you do I honestly I think the [TS]

00:27:46   Japanese version is funnier when she [TS]

00:27:48   takes off and hits the trees [TS]

00:27:49   I think it's funny that it's absolutely [TS]

00:27:51   silent and everybody's tensely watching [TS]

00:27:53   if she's gonna be able to do this and [TS]

00:27:55   she has this chino she's got an audience [TS]

00:27:57   which is I mean talk about the worst [TS]

00:27:59   thing in the world it's nice that [TS]

00:27:59   everybody comes and says goodbye to her [TS]

00:28:01   but then they have to watch it she tries [TS]

00:28:03   to fly and then and then after all of [TS]

00:28:05   that and sheets the tree but she writes [TS]

00:28:07   herself and it's kinda like okay it's [TS]

00:28:08   gonna be okay and she goes over the [TS]

00:28:10   other trainer like all right she's on [TS]

00:28:11   her way and then the other tree shakes [TS]

00:28:12   and it's like oh no and it's subtle but [TS]

00:28:15   it's really really funny and it's more [TS]

00:28:18   sticky and me in the dubbed version i [TS]

00:28:19   mean i don't wanna make this all about [TS]

00:28:20   subs and dubs but i think it's funny [TS]

00:28:22   that it's a different kind of humor and [TS]

00:28:23   I i liked it in the good news is i think [TS]

00:28:26   they scale that back that broad comedy a [TS]

00:28:28   little bit in the 2010 version because i [TS]

00:28:30   don't recall there being a whole lot of [TS]

00:28:31   chatter [TS]

00:28:32   on during a sequence but just hitting [TS]

00:28:34   the trees and then the bells ringing [TS]

00:28:35   that's not hear the bells ringing she [TS]

00:28:37   hits that last tree but i don't remember [TS]

00:28:39   hearing GG say anything at all [TS]

00:30:56   you i fix it for supporting five-by-five [TS]

00:30:57   and the uncomfortable like Indiana Jones [TS]

00:31:00   though the whole way that you're going [TS]

00:31:03   to get the audience to identify with [TS]

00:31:04   this character is it can't look easy [TS]

00:31:06   it's actually has to be vulnerable and [TS]

00:31:09   she has to not do well in many things so [TS]

00:31:11   like she's setting off on an adventure [TS]

00:31:12   and if you want the audience to feel [TS]

00:31:14   like this is an adventure because it's [TS]

00:31:16   not like going to save the kingdom or [TS]

00:31:18   you know anything like that she's just [TS]

00:31:21   going to first of all she's leaving home [TS]

00:31:22   with 13 you have to make that feel more [TS]

00:31:24   fraught that does like oh they used to [TS]

00:31:26   do this because seems crazy you leave [TS]

00:31:27   the moment 13 but she's a witch named [TS]

00:31:29   the special thing and she's like she's [TS]

00:31:32   on her broom on her own [TS]

00:31:34   destination unknown that has to feel [TS]

00:31:36   like an adventure and from the very [TS]

00:31:37   beginning it feels like an adventure [TS]

00:31:38   because just getting off the ground is [TS]

00:31:40   an adventure just leaving town [TS]

00:31:41   successfully adventure and then it and [TS]

00:31:43   rain is rain adventure rains an [TS]

00:31:45   adventure like what do you do when it [TS]

00:31:46   rains you don't have any place to go you [TS]

00:31:48   going to turn around and go back home [TS]

00:31:49   and you know go like your father [TS]

00:31:51   whispering here you can always come back [TS]

00:31:52   home if you want to you know like it you [TS]

00:31:55   have to identify with her vulnerability [TS]

00:31:58   right off the bat and so it does feel [TS]

00:32:00   like an adventure to if you were just to [TS]

00:32:02   write down the events what happens [TS]

00:32:03   that's not much of an adventure but it [TS]

00:32:05   really feels like it you know sleeping [TS]

00:32:06   with the cows waking up in a new place [TS]

00:32:08   on the train coming into the town across [TS]

00:32:11   the water with the gulls like that's not [TS]

00:32:14   much happening but you feel it through [TS]

00:32:17   her because you immediately identify [TS]

00:32:18   with her as in overhead yeah when she [TS]

00:32:22   gets to the city and and this is my ah [TS]

00:32:27   before i brag about it to talk about [TS]

00:32:28   setting here because this is this is a [TS]

00:32:30   fascinating thing and that this is a [TS]

00:32:32   movie when you watch totoro you're [TS]

00:32:33   watching a movie about Japanese people [TS]

00:32:35   in Japan when you watch kiki's delivery [TS]

00:32:37   service [TS]

00:32:38   you're watching japanese movie in [TS]

00:32:40   Japanese or originally at least maybe [TS]

00:32:42   dubbed in english about characters who [TS]

00:32:45   are in an undefined northern european [TS]

00:32:48   country where a lot of the writing is in [TS]

00:32:52   English or in a fake Germanic kind of [TS]

00:32:56   language in fact there's there's even [TS]

00:32:58   some english language [TS]

00:32:59   stuff happening in the background of the [TS]

00:33:01   japanese version to imply that this is [TS]

00:33:03   Europe or something Europe ish and the [TS]

00:33:05   look of it is according to wikipedia you [TS]

00:33:09   know it was a mostly based on stuff in [TS]

00:33:11   Sweden I've actually been the city looks [TS]

00:33:13   like Stockholm a lot of the stuff in the [TS]

00:33:15   countryside looks like this B which is [TS]

00:33:17   um on this in Scotland which is an [TS]

00:33:20   island in the baltic sea I've been to [TS]

00:33:21   both of those places there there's a [TS]

00:33:23   there's a scene where she's walking down [TS]

00:33:24   the street at one point that I i pointed [TS]

00:33:25   out of myself i have been on that street [TS]

00:33:27   like I can tell what the references are [TS]

00:33:29   but it's also fascinating because it's [TS]

00:33:31   like it there's some some cognitive [TS]

00:33:33   dissonance there it's like a weight i'm [TS]

00:33:35   used to seeing these japanese animated [TS]

00:33:37   movies about Japan and that's not what [TS]

00:33:40   this is this is this is I can't even [TS]

00:33:42   know that what's the name of the of the [TS]

00:33:44   bakery it's like this for you do keep on [TS]

00:33:47   just more good sport gooder right it [TS]

00:33:50   would yeah right [TS]

00:33:51   it's it's not it's not Japanese all the [TS]

00:33:54   writing is not it's sort of fascinating [TS]

00:33:55   how you you got to think about like how [TS]

00:33:57   this was was playing for a Japanese [TS]

00:33:59   audience that you know that's all of the [TS]

00:34:02   non-japanese writing and sending a [TS]

00:34:03   signal that this is happening in in [TS]

00:34:05   Europe so I thought that was I thought [TS]

00:34:08   that was really interesting to it makes [TS]

00:34:09   this feel very different in that way [TS]

00:34:11   from and it's storybook here up kind of [TS]

00:34:14   thanks to rebook mid century Europe but [TS]

00:34:17   it's definitely not like totoro where [TS]

00:34:18   you know you're in Japan and this is [TS]

00:34:20   about the Japanese countryside all [TS]

00:34:22   settings are realistic in that integral [TS]

00:34:24   like it's a house in the country and you [TS]

00:34:26   have right and rice fields and that's [TS]

00:34:27   what it looks like it here even though [TS]

00:34:28   this is an amalgam kind of its like a [TS]

00:34:30   composite character of Health European [TS]

00:34:32   cities but it is a real living City that [TS]

00:34:35   isn't that is not the enemy nor is it [TS]

00:34:36   your friend it's just a city where [TS]

00:34:38   people work where people do the things [TS]

00:34:39   in there are people who were Kurt to you [TS]

00:34:41   and there's there are you know strangers [TS]

00:34:44   on the street and their people who are [TS]

00:34:45   nice to you and their friends and their [TS]

00:34:46   classes and there's like it is it like [TS]

00:34:48   it is an entire working city and after [TS]

00:34:51   watching this movie so many times like I [TS]

00:34:53   can't imagine any adult who wouldn't [TS]

00:34:55   want to live in that city because it is [TS]

00:34:56   ideal lot it is idealized to integrate [TS]

00:34:58   they have everything they have the [TS]

00:34:59   beautiful scenery that nice people they [TS]

00:35:01   have good bakeries you can live in the [TS]

00:35:03   woods and drink resetar birds [TS]

00:35:05   yeah right which is why would you [TS]

00:35:07   deliver stuff yeah yeah I'm not not not [TS]

00:35:10   that well that's and a part of Stockholm [TS]

00:35:11   but it's [TS]

00:35:12   modeled after is the old town in the [TS]

00:35:14   centre-right is there's the whole city [TS]

00:35:15   and then there's the part where the [TS]

00:35:16   tourists like me go and and say wow this [TS]

00:35:19   is so quaint and beautiful and that's [TS]

00:35:21   what this movie is showing right it's [TS]

00:35:24   the beautiful village ii old European [TS]

00:35:27   streets and things like that and then [TS]

00:35:29   and then beautiful countryside when we [TS]

00:35:31   get out to where the painter is going to [TS]

00:35:33   paint Kiki but definitely not naked in [TS]

00:35:35   the village definitely is it has it [TS]

00:35:37   vaguely Germanic feel although tombos [TS]

00:35:39   clothes are more flaming League a [TS]

00:35:41   Frenchman I think interesting well i [TS]

00:35:43   think you're going for Sweden or Denmark [TS]

00:35:44   but yeah sure it's yours is that is that [TS]

00:35:47   a Swedish look I don't know Europe [TS]

00:35:49   well I found at one point one of the [TS]

00:35:50   flags is like a yellow it's one of those [TS]

00:35:53   would cross is like you see in the [TS]

00:35:55   Scandinavian countries but it's like [TS]

00:35:56   yellow one purple and I'm like all going [TS]

00:35:58   up cot flags flags we don't recognize it [TS]

00:36:00   crazy flag is that well when I'm when I [TS]

00:36:03   would have been in Scandinavia it's like [TS]

00:36:04   okay is this the yellow one the blue or [TS]

00:36:06   is this the yellow on the red or is this [TS]

00:36:08   the white on the blue I don't know [TS]

00:36:10   because they're like I'm color blind to [TS]

00:36:12   see if the guys don't make everything in [TS]

00:36:14   X or even come on don't do that but but [TS]

00:36:18   purple yellow and purple like I'm [TS]

00:36:20   confident is not an actual country [TS]

00:36:22   that's the made-up country that Kiki [TS]

00:36:24   lives in apparently but so anyway when [TS]

00:36:27   they get to the once you get to the town [TS]

00:36:29   she causes a traffic jam and almost an [TS]

00:36:31   accident and and i noticed for the very [TS]

00:36:34   first time that a bus zooms by her that [TS]

00:36:36   is with the label simply to do is really [TS]

00:36:38   on it that made me laugh and then and [TS]

00:36:42   then and tombo basically gets her out of [TS]

00:36:48   trouble with the police by saying help [TS]

00:36:50   beef somebody stole my something and and [TS]

00:36:53   she runs the other way which I i like [TS]

00:36:55   that moment of you know she is here she [TS]

00:36:58   is a little desperate right i mean she [TS]

00:37:00   is trying to make it and and you get [TS]

00:37:02   that sense like when it later on when [TS]

00:37:04   it's evening you know she needs to find [TS]

00:37:07   a way she could tries to go to the hotel [TS]

00:37:09   and they're like you know what are you [TS]

00:37:10   talking about you don't have any [TS]

00:37:11   identification you're just a kid sitting [TS]

00:37:13   silently with the uneaten sandwich [TS]

00:37:15   yes well done until until the cat eats [TS]

00:37:18   as the Sun as the sun goes down you [TS]

00:37:20   don't need her to talk to the cat back [TS]

00:37:22   and forth for an entire scene of [TS]

00:37:23   dialogue oh what are we going to do you [TS]

00:37:24   I don't know [TS]

00:37:25   just a bum about you don't need to do [TS]

00:37:27   that you just need to have her sit there [TS]

00:37:28   with your arms at your side with food in [TS]

00:37:29   front of her not eating it and have the [TS]

00:37:31   Sun going down and then just maybe have [TS]

00:37:33   the cats a Kiki that's all you need you [TS]

00:37:36   don't need to spell out what's going on [TS]

00:37:39   so all that desperation and the feeling [TS]

00:37:40   when she when she has that moment where [TS]

00:37:42   the cop is so you stay right here and [TS]

00:37:43   she's like I'm gonna go this way it's [TS]

00:37:45   that it's like she's yes he should [TS]

00:37:47   probably stay right but she's like it's [TS]

00:37:49   going to be complicated it's gonna ruin [TS]

00:37:51   her chance and it's again it's it's not [TS]

00:37:53   a really nasty kind of she's desperate [TS]

00:37:57   and needs to find a way to survive but [TS]

00:37:59   that's what's happening here is she's [TS]

00:38:01   disobeying the police to do think she's [TS]

00:38:03   worried about most with the cop is that [TS]

00:38:05   he's going to tell her parents [TS]

00:38:06   yeah yeah yeah she wants to get on with [TS]

00:38:08   her life she wants with this new life [TS]

00:38:10   that she's dedicated herself to doing [TS]

00:38:12   yeah and also not have her parents find [TS]

00:38:14   out that she started a wreck also john [TS]

00:38:17   you talk about that the the beautiful [TS]

00:38:19   moments a little tiny details that some [TS]

00:38:21   animator somewhere spent the there's a [TS]

00:38:23   moment where tambo is in in that scene [TS]

00:38:25   where he reveals that he cleverly made a [TS]

00:38:28   diversion [TS]

00:38:29   he is looking at her and riding his bike [TS]

00:38:32   and almost runs into a garbage can [TS]

00:38:34   yeah and has to adjust and go around the [TS]

00:38:36   garbage can it's just like you don't [TS]

00:38:38   it's amazing detail that's like that is [TS]

00:38:40   detail of from a live-action world but [TS]

00:38:43   they animated the whole thing and you [TS]

00:38:44   can feel you again you can feel the [TS]

00:38:46   physics of it you can see that he has to [TS]

00:38:48   swerve many as to get back his bike back [TS]

00:38:50   to straight and the b-bumps the garbage [TS]

00:38:52   can and it and she wants the garbage can [TS]

00:38:55   but he doesn't like he doesn't like [TS]

00:38:56   Harpo Marx it into the garbage can know [TS]

00:38:58   that he's trying to is trying to keep [TS]

00:39:00   his composure you know I know it sounds [TS]

00:39:02   silly but it's like I'm still burning [TS]

00:39:03   off you know 40 years of of watching [TS]

00:39:05   american cartoons and you know I get a [TS]

00:39:07   little while and it's funny and it's [TS]

00:39:09   real and then the movie goes on and [TS]

00:39:11   tombos interest in her this is this is [TS]

00:39:13   the you know I more cliche is that we [TS]

00:39:15   this movie avoids that armors Atomos [TS]

00:39:17   interest in her is because she is flying [TS]

00:39:19   it's not while look at this gorgeous new [TS]

00:39:21   girl that's flown into tent like it [TS]

00:39:23   the in every other movie that the [TS]

00:39:25   females only worth is how is how nice [TS]

00:39:27   she looks and so that the first if you [TS]

00:39:29   if there's some sort of something that [TS]

00:39:31   happens at first sight it's like wow [TS]

00:39:33   look at her like it even something like [TS]

00:39:35   you know how to train your dragon where [TS]

00:39:36   what's your name comes walking slow [TS]

00:39:37   motion with explosion behind [TS]

00:39:39   I'd like the whole point is she's [TS]

00:39:40   beautiful and beautiful is is the way [TS]

00:39:42   women are valuable and therefore and I [TS]

00:39:44   mean that's fine for what it is but like [TS]

00:39:46   the in this movie [TS]

00:39:48   tambo is interested in her because she [TS]

00:39:50   can fly literally fly and he is obsessed [TS]

00:39:52   with flying and yes he's obviously you [TS]

00:39:54   know it [TS]

00:39:55   interested in our and kind of a [TS]

00:39:56   boyfriend-girlfriend kind of way as well [TS]

00:39:58   but that is not the plot of this movie [TS]

00:40:00   that's not how this movie's gonna be [TS]

00:40:01   resolved it's not important to this [TS]

00:40:03   movie and he has a legitimate interest [TS]

00:40:04   in her that is based on something that [TS]

00:40:07   she can do that he can't he's just so [TS]

00:40:10   flying around for pete's sake [TS]

00:40:12   yeah well there's gonna be a huge party [TS]

00:40:15   at the Flying Club the aviation club [TS]

00:40:18   yeah and I've tried at the first couple [TS]

00:40:20   times the movie I was lumping tambo in [TS]

00:40:22   with the rich kids but now if you want [TS]

00:40:24   to look closely like he is he's well off [TS]

00:40:26   but he's not like the giant house on the [TS]

00:40:29   cliff overlooking to see well off like [TS]

00:40:31   his he lives in the sort of middle-class [TS]

00:40:34   part of town and any place overlooking [TS]

00:40:36   to us buyers to they all live on the [TS]

00:40:39   cliff of what I'm talking like the one [TS]

00:40:40   where they bring the little toy cat [TS]

00:40:41   where that was like actually i own this [TS]

00:40:43   entire Peninsula ok for the fashion [TS]

00:40:46   designer woman who is like the fashion [TS]

00:40:48   designer woman is not his mother right [TS]

00:40:50   his mother just a regular person he's [TS]

00:40:51   got a propeller on his bike his friends [TS]

00:40:53   cars could piss like is probably the [TS]

00:40:55   rolls-royce but a beat-up rolls-royce [TS]

00:40:57   like you know that his friends going so [TS]

00:40:58   yeah there's this definitely class [TS]

00:41:00   structure going on here at this point of [TS]

00:41:02   the movie I i really like that they [TS]

00:41:05   don't make a big deal about the fact [TS]

00:41:06   that she's which I mean it's just [TS]

00:41:08   witches exist in this world and people [TS]

00:41:10   know about it seems like their influence [TS]

00:41:12   may be fading you know at least in the [TS]

00:41:14   big cities but you know the time frame [TS]

00:41:16   is modern it's like my grandmother told [TS]

00:41:18   me right at least they have like [TS]

00:41:19   electric ovens you know so it's not it's [TS]

00:41:21   not easy but we're not going wrong in [TS]

00:41:23   the past when which is in talking cat [TS]

00:41:24   still roamed the land sort of territory [TS]

00:41:27   key now there's airplanes and electric [TS]

00:41:30   ovens but they're also old ladies who [TS]

00:41:32   are suspicious of the electric ovens but [TS]

00:41:34   that's a good part in the beginning of [TS]

00:41:36   this movie like when this movie starts [TS]

00:41:37   you you know from the posters or [TS]

00:41:39   whatever that's gonna involve the witch [TS]

00:41:41   riding on a broomstick but if you like [TS]

00:41:42   my kids into the posters if you just [TS]

00:41:44   bring a little kid into this clean and [TS]

00:41:46   you see the mom making potions and stuff [TS]

00:41:48   like that [TS]

00:41:48   the movie has to eventually established [TS]

00:41:50   like the rules of the universe [TS]

00:41:52   and right up to the point where Kiki you [TS]

00:41:55   know straddle the broom to leave her [TS]

00:41:56   house and her hair starts ripping like [TS]

00:41:58   that you're not sure what's up you're [TS]

00:41:59   like well as witches and I guess they [TS]

00:42:02   have dresses it seems like a normal [TS]

00:42:03   family and they were gonna go camping [TS]

00:42:04   and yes the moms potions or it's not a [TS]

00:42:06   big deal but then it's like nope you can [TS]

00:42:08   actually fly and it's magic is dramatic [TS]

00:42:10   and it's beautifully animated and you [TS]

00:42:12   know that is an exciting moment I think [TS]

00:42:14   in the film for a little kid because [TS]

00:42:16   they don't know what the rule if you [TS]

00:42:17   don't show them the poster ahead of time [TS]

00:42:18   with you shouldn't they don't know what [TS]

00:42:20   the rules this world are up front and [TS]

00:42:21   the animation when she takes off is is [TS]

00:42:24   beautiful and and wonderful and not at [TS]

00:42:27   all mundane like the act of flight is [TS]

00:42:30   acknowledged for what it is like this is [TS]

00:42:32   amazing and everyone who sees you do it [TS]

00:42:34   to like she just flew did you see I mean [TS]

00:42:35   it's not like they shouldn't be not [TS]

00:42:37   falling over like they would be [TS]

00:42:38   realistically speaking but it is it is [TS]

00:42:40   given credit as as a important [TS]

00:42:43   impressive thing through the how long [TS]

00:42:46   they spend on it and how well it's [TS]

00:42:47   animated the I was I I'm gonna mention [TS]

00:42:50   the bakery now and I was trying to prep [TS]

00:42:52   by its duty upon yeah but it's [TS]

00:42:55   apparently pronounced gucci keep on [TS]

00:42:57   which okay ponyo location which is taken [TS]

00:42:59   from rock-scissors-paper fruit energy [TS]

00:43:02   balagia haagen-dazs Tanya's bakery what [TS]

00:43:05   they did in the dub they call the good [TS]

00:43:07   cooking pan bakery which I thought was [TS]

00:43:08   clever because they tried to try to get [TS]

00:43:09   the same sounds into an english we're [TS]

00:43:11   not the I like so there's all this all [TS]

00:43:16   connects because for some reason a lady [TS]

00:43:19   with a baby left the pacifier at the [TS]

00:43:22   bakery and what let's talk about the [TS]

00:43:25   first lady with the baby massively [TS]

00:43:27   pregnant Osan oh yes well that's what i [TS]

00:43:29   was going to say it so a giant huge [TS]

00:43:32   pregnant lady comes out of the stores [TS]

00:43:34   like a lady forgot your uh and so we [TS]

00:43:37   meet us on oh yeah so what we're in the [TS]

00:43:40   fifties I know they had two separate [TS]

00:43:41   beds like i was at Ozzie and Harriet [TS]

00:43:43   have the separate beds and they have the [TS]

00:43:44   beds together and I was someone had the [TS]

00:43:46   best I don't know the history of i [TS]

00:43:47   cannot tell anybody [TS]

00:43:48   listen Ricky yeah I seem to recall that [TS]

00:43:50   like saying the word pregnant on early [TS]

00:43:53   television was somewhat frowned upon and [TS]

00:43:56   like in general like acknowledgement of [TS]

00:43:58   the human reproductive process took a [TS]

00:44:00   long time to come into live-action [TS]

00:44:02   television for adults in our country can [TS]

00:44:04   you think of another car [TS]

00:44:05   tune that acknowledges human [TS]

00:44:07   reproduction is a great showing a [TS]

00:44:08   massively I mean maybe tom and jerry did [TS]

00:44:11   it because they did a lot of raunchy [TS]

00:44:11   stuff they're having and pretend to be [TS]

00:44:13   pregnant at some point I don't know but [TS]

00:44:15   like it she is it like an ad of the [TS]

00:44:18   people must move your style is right but [TS]

00:44:20   she's more or less the anatomically only [TS]

00:44:22   slightly exaggerated gigantic pregnant [TS]

00:44:25   moment in a cartoon for children and [TS]

00:44:27   that shouldn't be impressive because [TS]

00:44:28   that's how we all got here but so much [TS]

00:44:30   of it [TS]

00:44:32   cartoons for children or any program for [TS]

00:44:34   children does not acknowledge how people [TS]

00:44:35   come to be at all and this movie doesn't [TS]

00:44:38   shy away from it and there it is and [TS]

00:44:39   it's a very important part of the movie [TS]

00:44:40   because she is one in a long line of [TS]

00:44:43   potential role models for Kiki which we [TS]

00:44:45   should get to at some point listing [TS]

00:44:46   those out and I think that is an [TS]

00:44:48   important part of the movie that I'm at [TS]

00:44:51   sad that it's surprising or shocking but [TS]

00:44:53   this is one phase of one possible phase [TS]

00:44:57   of a woman's life [TS]

00:44:58   also let's not forget that in most [TS]

00:45:00   movies if you have a pregnant lady her [TS]

00:45:02   being pregnant is an important part of [TS]

00:45:04   the plot because the title character is [TS]

00:45:06   that why else would she be pregnant is [TS]

00:45:08   something is going to happen with her [TS]

00:45:10   pregnancy and you know what happens in [TS]

00:45:12   the pregnancy in this [TS]

00:45:14   nothing is worth over the reddit there's [TS]

00:45:17   you see that she's now had a baby [TS]

00:45:19   well it's something some respects it's [TS]

00:45:21   important because that's why she needs a [TS]

00:45:22   little help around the beach for sure [TS]

00:45:24   but I mean it's just not you [TS]

00:45:26   she could say hey I need some help [TS]

00:45:28   around the bakery I've been meaning to [TS]

00:45:29   hire somebody but instead she's a giant [TS]

00:45:31   presently when it's it's not emblematic [TS]

00:45:33   of some problem in her relationship or [TS]

00:45:37   or a big source of tension with no with [TS]

00:45:39   her mate for the child is not a prophecy [TS]

00:45:42   baby will have to hope they will bring [TS]

00:45:44   the end of the world that we know John [TS]

00:45:46   that we know right it's not it's not [TS]

00:45:47   going to be secretly that's the Kings [TS]

00:45:50   baby and there's nothing like that one [TS]

00:45:52   of the things i do notice is that what [TS]

00:45:53   only one of Gigi's cats kittens [TS]

00:45:57   yeah black kitten and that black kitten [TS]

00:45:58   comes with him to learn so that he can [TS]

00:46:01   be presumably a kitten or a black cattle [TS]

00:46:04   of the future which and I thought our [TS]

00:46:05   the baby will be the next gen and I [TS]

00:46:08   thought no this is not i gotta stop that [TS]

00:46:10   means gigi is a horrible racist [TS]

00:46:11   teammates with a white puffy cat needs a [TS]

00:46:14   black not puffy but he does it once it [TS]

00:46:17   when one kid got his [TS]

00:46:18   mastic jeans the other ones are nice and [TS]

00:46:20   composed and that one is this path [TS]

00:46:22   station after the thread and fallin also [TS]

00:46:23   in this universe the boy cats are all [TS]

00:46:25   black and not puffy and the girl cats [TS]

00:46:27   are all white and puffy [TS]

00:46:29   I think that's cool what we learned [TS]

00:46:30   small sample size [TS]

00:46:32   yeah those are the only cats we see [TS]

00:46:34   really so i could be wrong [TS]

00:46:35   there's another can actually on the the [TS]

00:46:37   other witches broom stick at the [TS]

00:46:38   beginning yeah used to be female [TS]

00:46:40   yes baby back at like stuck stuck up cat [TS]

00:46:43   stuck-up witch [TS]

00:46:45   yeah so I sano it was her role that the [TS]

00:46:49   the panoply of role models that are [TS]

00:46:51   presented to Kiki throughout this movie [TS]

00:46:52   she's kind of in the middle here and [TS]

00:46:54   she's showing the possibilities of [TS]

00:46:56   motherhood [TS]

00:46:56   this is one thing you can do is a woman [TS]

00:46:58   as you can you give birth [TS]

00:46:59   she's a business owner yes she's [TS]

00:47:02   assertive I she is is not like as you [TS]

00:47:06   mentioned not not sort of no pun [TS]

00:47:08   intended coward by her pregnancy and she [TS]

00:47:10   is pregnant she's pregnant but continues [TS]

00:47:14   to to do all the things that she does [TS]

00:47:16   she's also kind and charitable to Kiki [TS]

00:47:19   but also expects her to you know to to [TS]

00:47:21   work and earn her keep [TS]

00:47:23   you know she's not just sitting in a [TS]

00:47:24   rocking chair like standing herself and [TS]

00:47:26   exhaling right exactly and even even at [TS]

00:47:30   the end of the movie when she gives [TS]

00:47:32   birth she's standing on the hill [TS]

00:47:33   weatherhead up to her you know shielding [TS]

00:47:35   her brow looking at Kiki flying through [TS]

00:47:37   the air and the husband has the baby and [TS]

00:47:39   is feeding it right but this is one [TS]

00:47:41   possible future for Kiki I up until that [TS]

00:47:44   moment are we even sure that he's her [TS]

00:47:45   husband [TS]

00:47:46   yeah it took me a while i think is great [TS]

00:47:47   i didn't get that was another about on [TS]

00:47:49   the screen [TS]

00:47:50   baking is this is a strong silent type [TS]

00:47:53   clearly it was a particle he's working [TS]

00:47:55   there to like he's making sure that the [TS]

00:47:57   two of them have a business together [TS]

00:47:59   sure I guess what bun in the oven get it [TS]

00:48:01   went to bakers love each other very much [TS]

00:48:03   too so maybe he's just helping out at [TS]

00:48:05   the end but is that how it works is that [TS]

00:48:07   there's a man and a woman and there's a [TS]

00:48:08   baby is that I don't know this mayne [TS]

00:48:10   ever seen as an animated film before [TS]

00:48:11   interesting but you're right in a lesser [TS]

00:48:14   film the the thing at the end that it [TS]

00:48:16   allows Kiki to fly again would have been [TS]

00:48:18   you know the the emergency pregnancy as [TS]

00:48:21   as opposed to the Zeppelin you know [TS]

00:48:22   which of courses for college if it does [TS]

00:48:24   have a convenient timing was like they [TS]

00:48:26   have as the movies ending we need to get [TS]

00:48:27   her into labor she's like okay time to [TS]

00:48:29   go [TS]

00:48:29   you know right but I mean yeah it's [TS]

00:48:31   still totally incidental it just happens [TS]

00:48:33   to happen at that point it's it's not [TS]

00:48:35   the focus of the film although she is [TS]

00:48:38   still rather Zeppelin like come to think [TS]

00:48:39   of it [TS]

00:48:40   yeah I think she might have been a [TS]

00:48:41   second so the first the first throw [TS]

00:48:43   model the interstate his life is there [TS]

00:48:45   besides her parents when she leaves home [TS]

00:48:46   is the other girl in the broom who shows [TS]

00:48:48   like at the end of your year which [TS]

00:48:50   training this could be you you know [TS]

00:48:52   worldly-wise but also a little bit [TS]

00:48:54   stuck-up and full of herself and she [TS]

00:48:56   goes into a town that smaller than the [TS]

00:48:58   town to keep you will eventually end up [TS]

00:48:59   in there is a difference in the dialogue [TS]

00:49:01   between English and Japanese of as to [TS]

00:49:03   whether kinky like is this town big and [TS]

00:49:06   impressive to Kiki does the stuck-up you [TS]

00:49:08   only think it's big and Kiki doesn't [TS]

00:49:10   believe that or whatever but this is [TS]

00:49:13   she's seeing a potential of her future [TS]

00:49:15   self and deciding perhaps that she [TS]

00:49:17   doesn't want to end up like that whereas [TS]

00:49:18   when she sees asano this is another [TS]

00:49:20   possibility that she may not want to [TS]

00:49:21   look like that either but it is a a [TS]

00:49:23   nicer possibility yes but it's funny [TS]

00:49:26   it's like almost like you know what you [TS]

00:49:28   can have one which every town it's like [TS]

00:49:30   a mime or something it's like we can [TS]

00:49:32   have one of these in town it's not [TS]

00:49:33   really that like overwhelmingly weird [TS]

00:49:35   the thing that really differentiates [TS]

00:49:36   arisen that she's a witch is that she's [TS]

00:49:38   a pumpkin [TS]

00:49:39   you know what i mean and she doesn't [TS]

00:49:40   include provincial right yes I mean yeah [TS]

00:49:43   yeah she's a country mouse and the the [TS]

00:49:46   witch with a green eyed cat has clearly [TS]

00:49:47   she's figured out her trade and it's [TS]

00:49:49   very proud of having done that and again [TS]

00:49:52   key expires that again that's just a [TS]

00:49:54   little bit of pot pushing forward of [TS]

00:49:55   like how much she really wants to [TS]

00:49:57   succeed at this she wants she wants to [TS]

00:49:58   be a big kid she's been waiting for this [TS]

00:49:59   thing to happen and and i think that i [TS]

00:50:02   don't know i think that that they do a [TS]

00:50:04   nice job of not over doing that with her [TS]

00:50:06   character but it really well establishes [TS]

00:50:08   that she's very motivated to try and [TS]

00:50:10   make it in this place even she has no [TS]

00:50:12   reason to think that she would succeed [TS]

00:50:13   there she's not swept along by the plot [TS]

00:50:15   either every part of this movie she is [TS]

00:50:18   an active participant in making happen [TS]

00:50:19   she decides that she wants to leave even [TS]

00:50:21   though she had previously planned the [TS]

00:50:22   next night she decides it's going to be [TS]

00:50:23   clear night full moon I want to leave [TS]

00:50:25   now she tries to take her broom and like [TS]

00:50:27   her mother [TS]

00:50:28   search the last little bit of motherhood [TS]

00:50:29   before she leaves you know like she her [TS]

00:50:31   actions drive this plot forward her [TS]

00:50:33   decisions and her wanting to do things [TS]

00:50:35   she's not like suddenly caught up in an [TS]

00:50:37   adventure that she's swept along in or [TS]

00:50:39   what [TS]

00:50:39   she liked it you know compared to like [TS]

00:50:41   kind of billboard like has adventure [TS]

00:50:43   thrust upon him she makes all these [TS]

00:50:45   changes in her life happen but through [TS]

00:50:47   food deciding to do something if I were [TS]

00:50:49   that helicopter dad though I mean I [TS]

00:50:51   guess maybe the cats are familiar or [TS]

00:50:52   something but i would have really given [TS]

00:50:54   her driving skills I would have tried to [TS]

00:50:55   talk her out of driving with a cat on [TS]

00:50:57   the broom yeah you can get back the [TS]

00:50:59   vision on that how that goes once you [TS]

00:51:00   teach your daughter how to drive and how [TS]

00:51:02   and how accepting this issue of your [TS]

00:51:04   instruction well she did at least listen [TS]

00:51:06   to his admonition that she should make [TS]

00:51:08   the cat to in the radio while she yeah [TS]

00:51:10   that's right the cat is there is the [TS]

00:51:12   kind of that song that is such a great [TS]

00:51:14   pop song which wondering what the [TS]

00:51:16   Japanese Japanese only the Japanese one [TS]

00:51:18   yeah although I i'm curious about what [TS]

00:51:20   the theme song is saying but I it's got [TS]

00:51:21   to be something that's totally on the [TS]

00:51:22   nose it's a very fifty sock-hop gonna [TS]

00:51:25   know it's from it isn't it from I [TS]

00:51:27   thought I run the fact that essentially [TS]

00:51:28   is actually a pop song from the [TS]

00:51:30   seventies yeah but the style the Royal [TS]

00:51:32   is a a fifties saw cop yeah well I mean [TS]

00:51:35   it in the seventies and even Japan loves [TS]

00:51:38   to make their own invitation versions of [TS]

00:51:39   you know fifties American about a woman [TS]

00:51:42   who's going to tell her boyfriend's [TS]

00:51:44   mother about him and get him in trouble [TS]

00:51:46   and admonished I think it's the thrust [TS]

00:51:48   is what's called what's the song called [TS]

00:51:49   rogue group called i was on youtube you [TS]

00:51:54   can go and don't have a confront what's [TS]

00:51:55   the song like that the the song that [TS]

00:51:57   they replaced it with in the previous [TS]

00:51:58   one is it just puts it like the most in [TS]

00:52:01   most cases i don't like when they [TS]

00:52:03   replace the Japanese song with an [TS]

00:52:04   English with an entirely different songs [TS]

00:52:05   it's usually terrible but the songs this [TS]

00:52:07   one are not they're not super terrible [TS]

00:52:11   its jail [TS]

00:52:13   yeah it say that it's an incredibly [TS]

00:52:14   generic happy disney pop right around [TS]

00:52:18   the not but that insulting [TS]

00:52:20   yeah they're not insulting there not [TS]

00:52:22   knowing that that the lyrics are not [TS]

00:52:24   insulting Lee ridiculous right I'm [TS]

00:52:26   actually disappointed that those that's [TS]

00:52:28   it that's an actual pop song i was i was [TS]

00:52:29   totally thinking the lyrics were like [TS]

00:52:31   along the lines of kikis flagging not [TS]

00:52:33   broomstick engine has a cat could be [TS]

00:52:37   your actual silver a town which is a [TS]

00:52:39   place where people these encountering [TS]

00:52:41   problems with where they're a [TS]

00:52:43   the riches here come see girls watch out [TS]

00:52:47   for the boot keep it going to get you [TS]

00:52:51   can't turn the radio down because here's [TS]

00:52:54   another witch but yeah guess that's not [TS]

00:52:57   it they are light with the exposition [TS]

00:52:59   label I appreciate that [TS]

00:53:01   sorry I'm trying to imagine what the [TS]

00:53:03   bridge of that song is about crows in [TS]

00:53:04   some way by good and they can memorize [TS]

00:53:08   faces and pick us left in this year in [TS]

00:53:12   August has learned to deal with them [TS]

00:53:14   yeah in those scenes with the speaking [TS]

00:53:15   of the crows like this is another thing [TS]

00:53:17   in the in the grand tradition of totoro [TS]

00:53:18   where again that the faces in this movie [TS]

00:53:20   are miyazaki faces they're not realistic [TS]

00:53:23   human looking faces there you know kind [TS]

00:53:25   of in-between they're not they're not [TS]

00:53:26   taught entirely cartoonish but the [TS]

00:53:29   animals are frighteningly realistic like [TS]

00:53:31   they look like they're all like little [TS]

00:53:33   cow [TS]

00:53:34   yeah the cow the crows the goat who [TS]

00:53:36   wants the corner into a road just like [TS]

00:53:37   frighteningly dead on realistic has been [TS]

00:53:40   terrifying and again it's like that's [TS]

00:53:43   you know how it a little kid powered a [TS]

00:53:46   child see a bird squawking your face it [TS]

00:53:48   would be terrifying when you see burn up [TS]

00:53:50   close like that they're scary little [TS]

00:53:52   dinosaurs [TS]

00:53:53   it's terrifying when you're an adult I [TS]

00:53:54   hate him hate birds [TS]

00:53:56   well and there's those talons on that [TS]

00:53:59   thing is it's sort of scratching at her [TS]

00:54:00   when she falls into the tree that it [TS]

00:54:02   really is very scary all the somebody's [TS]

00:54:04   basis now for some reason to keep [TS]

00:54:05   thinking of house moving castle a tour [TS]

00:54:07   or howl's moving castle and what's the [TS]

00:54:11   one with mom and castle in the sky like [TS]

00:54:15   I love the straight-on it's almost like [TS]

00:54:18   his Kubrick shot is a shot of somebody [TS]

00:54:20   looking at the camera looking extremely [TS]

00:54:22   determined with their face set whether [TS]

00:54:24   that somebody just got punched in the [TS]

00:54:25   stomach [TS]

00:54:26   whether it's somebody's trying to fly [TS]

00:54:27   something that's you know I mean there's [TS]

00:54:29   there's a certain kind of me I don't [TS]

00:54:30   know that's an amazing or miyazaki thing [TS]

00:54:32   but I is his characters are artists [TS]

00:54:35   imbued with their silence but their [TS]

00:54:37   faces just have so much purposefulness [TS]

00:54:40   to them you know you don't get that with [TS]

00:54:42   Fred and Barney I'm gonna I'm gonna [TS]

00:54:43   mention something that i noticed this [TS]

00:54:45   time I think that that I haven't noticed [TS]

00:54:47   before which is when she gets when when [TS]

00:54:50   key goes with the the artist back to the [TS]

00:54:53   woods to her artists retreat with the [TS]

00:54:56   crows [TS]

00:54:57   parkrose alright we've got off on the [TS]

00:55:00   wrong foot last time I hope you don't [TS]

00:55:01   pick my eyes out this time haha I'm my [TS]

00:55:04   cabin deep in the woods i'll show you my [TS]

00:55:06   etchings yeah seriously there is she's a [TS]

00:55:08   very does the artist is a very sensual [TS]

00:55:10   person is what I'm saying these little [TS]

00:55:11   boys don't have legs that look like this [TS]

00:55:13   although it bothers me a little bit that [TS]

00:55:16   she's basically a very tall may from [TS]

00:55:18   totoro she's also kind of hot and that [TS]

00:55:21   make it very uncomfortable yeah that [TS]

00:55:22   makes me uncomfy about I was she says [TS]

00:55:24   these these legs I'm like or the boobs [TS]

00:55:26   you could have mentioned the boobs and [TS]

00:55:28   not the legs but ok this is not a boy [TS]

00:55:31   you picked up here hitchhiking and [TS]

00:55:32   another one of miyazaki's really big [TS]

00:55:34   laugher here this explosion of left i [TS]

00:55:39   love that I love that take that win it [TS]

00:55:41   when it's somebody I'm thinking very [TS]

00:55:43   seriously about this and I said [TS]

00:55:44   something very serious long pause and [TS]

00:55:46   then haha ah i love that that is so [TS]

00:55:50   great [TS]

00:55:50   actually I realize that's an anime true [TS]

00:55:52   but that's going to actually sort of [TS]

00:55:53   bothers me because there's so much [TS]

00:55:55   realism in these movies and then that [TS]

00:55:56   just that that consoles me out of it [TS]

00:55:58   there's a little bit like like it works [TS]

00:56:00   in the scene like for example with [TS]

00:56:02   whether the propeller bike crashes and [TS]

00:56:04   like are you okay like that is a place [TS]

00:56:06   where there is tension you're worried [TS]

00:56:07   but then once you see everyone's okay [TS]

00:56:09   there is a release that much like that [TS]

00:56:11   part's realistic that's what he told [TS]

00:56:12   about the you know the artist too [TS]

00:56:14   because I felt like that was Kiki being [TS]

00:56:15   very serious and the artist is like [TS]

00:56:17   totally deflate services like now it's [TS]

00:56:19   fine you know that's you're worried [TS]

00:56:20   about too much too much [TS]

00:56:22   there's a bit earlier that when she has [TS]

00:56:23   the flu and she asked if she's gonna die [TS]

00:56:25   and no you have to responsible [TS]

00:56:27   oh yeah oh oh yeah laughing a little kid [TS]

00:56:31   you know that kid cracks you up when [TS]

00:56:33   they say something like most adults are [TS]

00:56:35   better at holding it in like when your [TS]

00:56:36   kid something cute and silly like that [TS]

00:56:38   you don't have right in their face but [TS]

00:56:39   osanna was really good areas and hostess [TS]

00:56:42   it's just so over-the-top accountant me [TS]

00:56:43   out of it so I was gonna say we turn our [TS]

00:56:45   faces [TS]

00:56:46   it looks to me like when the the artist [TS]

00:56:49   is sketching keys face that we see more [TS]

00:56:52   detail in the sketch of a canyon face [TS]

00:56:56   then the actual faces are in the moon [TS]

00:56:59   because they're because they're stylized [TS]

00:57:00   then you don't need that many lines like [TS]

00:57:02   that's that that's the economy of the [TS]

00:57:04   miyazaki faces there I'm [TS]

00:57:05   able to view such incredible emotion [TS]

00:57:07   with so few lines like that's the [TS]

00:57:09   artistry of it and when she drives it is [TS]

00:57:10   a sketchy like we don't you know you see [TS]

00:57:12   all these details like whoa where's that [TS]

00:57:13   coming from like you don't need those [TS]

00:57:15   days and we don't see that level of [TS]

00:57:16   resolution if you live in this world you [TS]

00:57:18   see the full resolution of people but we [TS]

00:57:20   we don't see that so I thought that was [TS]

00:57:21   what was her name Ursula right [TS]

00:57:23   personally have the artist so she she is [TS]

00:57:26   another possibility for Kiki's future [TS]

00:57:28   saying yeah he is an independent woman [TS]

00:57:30   living on her own you know chasing her [TS]

00:57:33   artistic music became self-sufficient [TS]

00:57:36   confident a little bit eccentric able to [TS]

00:57:39   indulge in her eccentricities and and [TS]

00:57:42   unique but you know and not living in [TS]

00:57:44   the city living outside the city but [TS]

00:57:45   occasionally traveling into it and she [TS]

00:57:46   comes in a little bit like a pumpkin [TS]

00:57:48   with a straw hat and a big backpack too [TS]

00:57:49   but that's okay [TS]

00:57:50   and I that seems they have what there is [TS]

00:57:53   another section of the movie where it's [TS]

00:57:56   like what cut all this out why is this [TS]

00:57:58   here getting on the bus but there hurry [TS]

00:58:01   up the bus is late walking onto the bus [TS]

00:58:03   sitting in the back of the bus and [TS]

00:58:04   getting to share some candy has Kiki [TS]

00:58:06   ever had candy before in her life we [TS]

00:58:07   don't know bubblegum she even know what [TS]

00:58:09   that is passing over the little gumballs [TS]

00:58:11   eating them walking up the really big [TS]

00:58:13   hill getting to the top of the really [TS]

00:58:14   big hill turning around and looking at [TS]

00:58:16   the town below you like there's like [TS]

00:58:18   seven scenes and they're like what's [TS]

00:58:19   going on this i know they're traveling [TS]

00:58:21   background cut to her house we need to [TS]

00:58:22   have a dialogue that brings no this is [TS]

00:58:24   the movie like this this trip back with [TS]

00:58:26   this moment is what is what this entire [TS]

00:58:28   movie is about its you can get you can't [TS]

00:58:30   cut that out and just bring them right [TS]

00:58:31   to the cabin where they can have a [TS]

00:58:32   conversation and you're gonna get the [TS]

00:58:34   cabinet's like to talk about her losing [TS]

00:58:35   her magic so I guess that's a plot point [TS]

00:58:37   but the movie is happening when they're [TS]

00:58:39   when she's getting the gumballs in the [TS]

00:58:41   bus the movie is happening when when the [TS]

00:58:43   bus is pulling away and it's viewed out [TS]

00:58:45   the window and the bus lurches and you [TS]

00:58:47   can see the scenery go up and then down [TS]

00:58:48   like that that's this movie for me all [TS]

00:58:51   those parts was also going outside the [TS]

00:58:53   the and getting a little genetic I you [TS]

00:58:55   know was reading up a little bit and it [TS]

00:58:57   makes it sound like the people can read [TS]

00:59:00   this on Wikipedia but there are some [TS]

00:59:02   travails with taking this original book [TS]

00:59:04   there wasn't a director attached to it [TS]

00:59:06   for a long time miyazaki was busy with [TS]

00:59:07   totoro and they're trying to decide what [TS]

00:59:09   to do with this and apparently the book [TS]

00:59:11   is a pretty straightforward but it's [TS]

00:59:13   episodic like here's the story [TS]

00:59:15   here's another story at all in parallel [TS]

00:59:16   they're mostly it sounds kind of [TS]

00:59:18   independent [TS]

00:59:18   an encyclopedia brown kind of thing and [TS]

00:59:20   then and-and-and miyazaki introduces the [TS]

00:59:23   one who when he attached himself to it [TS]

00:59:25   as director is the one that added the [TS]

00:59:27   whole ending that brings it all together [TS]

00:59:29   but originally I guess jacket that that [TS]

00:59:31   it was basically just about this is [TS]

00:59:32   shallower was a kids story with em with [TS]

00:59:34   a character who's a witch who delivers [TS]

00:59:36   things and she can have various [TS]

00:59:37   adventures that are shallow nature and [TS]

00:59:39   miyazaki turned into a coming-of-age [TS]

00:59:40   story basically yeah yeah and so we give [TS]

00:59:44   it some of the episodic stuff with like [TS]

00:59:46   the heavy package and all of that and [TS]

00:59:47   the unholy lucky and that awesome dog [TS]

00:59:51   when windows that dog great i love that [TS]

00:59:53   a chef and sort of depressing friends [TS]

00:59:56   people all the whole family whole family [TS]

00:59:58   is talking about how he's basically [TS]

00:59:58   is talking about how he's basically [TS]

01:00:00   the plant one foot in the grave thank [TS]

01:00:01   you buddy but he's smarter than they [TS]

01:00:03   think yeah that's right he's a little [TS]

01:00:05   dog he moved slowly that's well hit me [TS]

01:00:08   in the in the isn't in the subtitle [TS]

01:00:11   version isn't like that amazing dog that [TS]

01:00:13   fantastic dog that fabulous dog [TS]

01:00:17   something like that yeah he they take [TS]

01:00:19   him [TS]

01:00:19   they underestimate the family does Jeff [TS]

01:00:21   the dog and just because he slowed [TS]

01:00:23   doesn't mean he doesn't know exactly [TS]

01:00:24   what's going on and he you know he [TS]

01:00:26   rescues GG from the other it is a nice [TS]

01:00:30   smile about Hillary yeah with when gigi [TS]

01:00:32   is pretending to be a toy they make him [TS]

01:00:34   you know comically toy like and stiff [TS]

01:00:36   and then when when Jeff like puts him [TS]

01:00:38   down on the ground he's a real cat again [TS]

01:00:40   and runs away like a real cat right it's [TS]

01:00:42   just like the doggies dog ever it was so [TS]

01:00:44   great the way with so gently [TS]

01:00:46   it really looks really look like a dog [TS]

01:00:48   now I don't I gotta jump in here the ok [TS]

01:00:51   so so she let me just ask is is for [TS]

01:00:56   practical purposes is Gigi really [TS]

01:00:58   talking to kiki is Gigi in this case [TS]

01:01:02   talking to Jeff is it doesn't matter [TS]

01:01:04   because like I I this is the first time [TS]

01:01:06   i watched where I thought I got a little [TS]

01:01:07   bit little bit six cents with it and I [TS]

01:01:09   was thinking maybe she doesn't really [TS]

01:01:12   talk maybe that's all just in Key said [TS]

01:01:14   and then the two versions know he's like [TS]

01:01:16   my cock state-owned he definitely well [TS]

01:01:19   first off he definitely talk to other [TS]

01:01:20   animals i think that's I think that sort [TS]

01:01:22   of assumed in this is that the animals [TS]

01:01:24   all can talk to each other that's not [TS]

01:01:25   just kicking my engineer them talking to [TS]

01:01:27   each other but because we realize like [TS]

01:01:29   what I talked to this and then with the [TS]

01:01:31   dog we see it early on there's a seam [TS]

01:01:33   where at least in the subtitle there's [TS]

01:01:38   an old an old woman I think who says [TS]

01:01:41   something like oh well he said this and [TS]

01:01:43   I think it's referring I wish I'd [TS]

01:01:45   written it down [TS]

01:01:46   I think it's referring to G and I was [TS]

01:01:47   like haha i think this is implying that [TS]

01:01:50   some people can hear the cats some you [TS]

01:01:53   know old cat ladies and witches can hear [TS]

01:01:56   the cats when they talk scrapbookers the [TS]

01:01:59   impression that she she could understand [TS]

01:02:02   the cat only as long as she needed to [TS]

01:02:03   understand the cat for his assistance [TS]

01:02:05   she's kind of coming into the world and [TS]

01:02:07   and growing up at that at the point [TS]

01:02:10   where she suddenly has sort of made the [TS]

01:02:12   transition [TS]

01:02:13   too but that's not when he stops talking [TS]

01:02:14   to restarting her when she loses [TS]

01:02:16   confidence and she loses her powers and [TS]

01:02:18   her ability to fly you know when she [TS]

01:02:20   becomes but she's not she's lost her [TS]

01:02:22   confidence because she's the reality of [TS]

01:02:24   her situation in the fact that she's [TS]

01:02:26   kind of alone in the big world has come [TS]

01:02:27   to her [TS]

01:02:28   well that's so my theory and focuses on [TS]

01:02:30   past shows is that when she loses her [TS]

01:02:32   magic is essentially her hitting puberty [TS]

01:02:34   like yep we're gonna go all the way and [TS]

01:02:37   yeah you know she got her period that's [TS]

01:02:38   that's what I was wondering what I was [TS]

01:02:40   thinking yesterday i 100% like what [TS]

01:02:42   that's what it's a stand-in for higher [TS]

01:02:44   she wants to lay down its bigger because [TS]

01:02:47   like it's you know it all comes to a [TS]

01:02:49   head at that point it's like childhood [TS]

01:02:51   is ending and here is your here's your [TS]

01:02:53   outward biological sign of that and it's [TS]

01:02:55   her treatment of thombo should have been [TS]

01:02:57   a dead giveaway and and now it all comes [TS]

01:03:00   to a head and you have to realize you [TS]

01:03:01   there's no going back you have to figure [TS]

01:03:03   out this new world you have to put what [TS]

01:03:05   it is that's making you upset seeing [TS]

01:03:07   those rich kids what's making you feel [TS]

01:03:09   like you don't fit in and or do you just [TS]

01:03:11   have to work but some people don't have [TS]

01:03:12   to work but you do but then what what [TS]

01:03:14   you know like all those things and those [TS]

01:03:17   things are happening in her head she is [TS]

01:03:18   not dramatic about she's not writing in [TS]

01:03:20   her diary and and bawling constantly and [TS]

01:03:23   screaming at people it's all like it and [TS]

01:03:25   it's aight thanks so much more realistic [TS]

01:03:27   and more affecting that way and that's [TS]

01:03:29   when she starts to lose her magic stuff [TS]

01:03:32   and what's the first thing you should do [TS]

01:03:33   if she wants she tries to regain it was [TS]

01:03:35   running down the hill like I gotta I [TS]

01:03:36   gotta get it back i got it like and you [TS]

01:03:38   can't you can't go back that way you can [TS]

01:03:39   only you can only go forward and trying [TS]

01:03:41   to taiji get into that whether it's the [TS]

01:03:43   Japanese GG or the or the you know Phil [TS]

01:03:46   Hartman one I don't think either one of [TS]

01:03:48   them ties in that well because like it [TS]

01:03:51   you know so everything is in the [TS]

01:03:53   american one when she gets her powers [TS]

01:03:55   back at the end she can hear Phil [TS]

01:03:56   Hartman again and then japanese one she [TS]

01:03:58   can't hear full of you can't hear Jeezy [TS]

01:04:00   again she just sounds like a cat and an [TS]

01:04:02   economist and version of the disney tub [TS]

01:04:04   he does you don't hear ya Hartman he's [TS]

01:04:06   gone [TS]

01:04:07   yep didn't say meow didn't say that he [TS]

01:04:12   said but she like I don't like I don't [TS]

01:04:14   think that's integral because I think [TS]

01:04:15   all you all you need to know is that she [TS]

01:04:18   has come through the other side that [TS]

01:04:19   she's got her her magic power you know [TS]

01:04:22   she is she's doing its self [TS]

01:04:23   actualization that should come through [TS]

01:04:24   that and whether she still needs [TS]

01:04:26   got to be there or not I don't think [TS]

01:04:28   it's that big of a deal because even in [TS]

01:04:29   the japanese one she's not leaning on [TS]

01:04:31   the cat and he's not like her dad or her [TS]

01:04:33   ego out there talking he's just kind of [TS]

01:04:35   there as part of the movie but it's not [TS]

01:04:38   a big interview like the two of them are [TS]

01:04:39   not a team he is the whites cracking [TS]

01:04:41   sidekick you get even [TS]

01:04:43   yea even in the japanese one he is not [TS]

01:04:45   like integral so they they didn't [TS]

01:04:48   connect GG to her in a way that admit [TS]

01:04:50   that it makes him symbolic of something [TS]

01:04:52   that she has to leave behind i don't [TS]

01:04:53   think the Japanese one I agree I agree [TS]

01:04:56   with you I think I think it's actually [TS]

01:04:58   kind of weird to see that connection [TS]

01:05:00   because I I don't [TS]

01:05:01   yeah I don't we left sort of wondering [TS]

01:05:04   well why does he stop she talking again [TS]

01:05:07   at the end I'm you know I I sounds [TS]

01:05:09   non-canonical but I mean that makes it a [TS]

01:05:11   lesser movie to me for him to be hurt [TS]

01:05:14   again [TS]

01:05:15   you don't wanna wait wait but we don't [TS]

01:05:16   know the rules of the universe getting [TS]

01:05:17   back to whether he's talking or not we [TS]

01:05:18   don't know if the rules of the universe [TS]

01:05:20   are as described in things like well you [TS]

01:05:22   know it's not not witch magic the letter [TS]

01:05:24   here and it's actually because they were [TS]

01:05:25   raised together or whatever like that [TS]

01:05:27   really sort of like dicks think of the [TS]

01:05:28   dust mites in totoro but that's a [TS]

01:05:31   different universe where like this [TS]

01:05:32   universe we were established the adults [TS]

01:05:34   can see and accept magical things we're [TS]

01:05:36   into her own and not as never [TS]

01:05:38   established in total there is no adults [TS]

01:05:40   and as a witch flying by and we all see [TS]

01:05:41   it acknowledged that yes there are such [TS]

01:05:43   things as witches and yes they can fly [TS]

01:05:44   like the rules are clearly established [TS]

01:05:46   that magic is part of this realistic [TS]

01:05:47   world now whether the cat physics that I [TS]

01:05:49   don't know but like in totoro that's all [TS]

01:05:51   like you could say you know [TS]

01:05:53   no adults have pay any attention to that [TS]

01:05:54   that could all be in their heads and a [TS]

01:05:56   perfectly fit so I feel like once you [TS]

01:05:57   have a world where witches are flying [TS]

01:05:59   around talking cat is not out of the [TS]

01:06:01   question at all but it is sort of [TS]

01:06:03   tentative is the relationship between [TS]

01:06:04   key and gigi is the fact that he stops [TS]

01:06:07   talking at some point clearly feels like [TS]

01:06:09   well this is because she's transitioning [TS]

01:06:11   she's growing up and at the end for him [TS]

01:06:14   to come in and speak again it just feels [TS]

01:06:16   like you know oh we couldn't we couldn't [TS]

01:06:17   make the kids it makes it a double [TS]

01:06:19   vanities different movie i don't i don't [TS]

01:06:21   agree because i think that she again I [TS]

01:06:24   feel like the shutdown of his voice is [TS]

01:06:27   when she loses confidence and so the way [TS]

01:06:30   i read this is she she's not losing chef [TS]

01:06:35   lose the ability to fly she loses it [TS]

01:06:37   temporarily and then she gets it back [TS]

01:06:38   and those two things happening [TS]

01:06:40   mauritania slee to me i think i connect [TS]

01:06:43   them and I say this is not you know the [TS]

01:06:46   world has gotten her and she's never [TS]

01:06:47   going to hear the cat again but she's [TS]

01:06:49   going to be able to fly again how is [TS]

01:06:50   that she gets the one and not the other [TS]

01:06:52   so she came back because she's grown as [TS]

01:06:53   a person and now she's she's she's [TS]

01:06:55   flying for her own internal inspiration [TS]

01:06:58   it all depends on why you think she [TS]

01:06:59   could hear the cabinet being right if [TS]

01:07:01   you think she could hear the cat because [TS]

01:07:02   it was part of her witch's powers then [TS]

01:07:04   you feel like she when she gets her [TS]

01:07:05   powers back against your comments about [TS]

01:07:06   you hear the cap but if you if you think [TS]

01:07:08   that she hears the cat when she's [TS]

01:07:09   younger because it's just a way that [TS]

01:07:11   young it's sort of like the total like a [TS]

01:07:13   way young people comfort themselves with [TS]

01:07:14   something imaginary and suddenly she [TS]

01:07:16   finds herself growing up to the point [TS]

01:07:17   where it's like you know what I don't [TS]

01:07:18   believe in Santa anymore and office on [TS]

01:07:20   the cat is just a meowing thing then you [TS]

01:07:22   don't want her to hear the cat at the [TS]

01:07:23   end because that would be a regression [TS]

01:07:25   and that's why I think what Marilyn's [TS]

01:07:26   coming from [TS]

01:07:26   I thought I thought the key yeah [TS]

01:07:28   definitely i'm free i thank god for four [TS]

01:07:30   years of college I I felt like it wasn't [TS]

01:07:33   like an imaginary friend that but was an [TS]

01:07:35   imaginary friend that was we real kind [TS]

01:07:37   of and then and then when it's called a [TS]

01:07:39   friend Mario enough friend which one of [TS]

01:07:41   my imaginary friend that is real is a [TS]

01:07:43   friend that i think that's that's a [TS]

01:07:46   contradiction in terms of topping hang [TS]

01:07:49   on just made club is is the cat but the [TS]

01:07:52   real forget really talking about with [TS]

01:07:54   the whole movie though basically being [TS]

01:07:56   her growing up it to me it felt like she [TS]

01:07:58   gets her flying back that's good there [TS]

01:08:00   are some things you know that you can [TS]

01:08:01   maybe revisit as you get older and [TS]

01:08:03   there's some things will never be the [TS]

01:08:04   same again and me the cat was one of [TS]

01:08:06   those things that you know that's just [TS]

01:08:08   how it's not how it is now you're not [TS]

01:08:10   gonna be able to your cat's about you [TS]

01:08:11   but it shouldn't be because she no [TS]

01:08:13   longer has the magic ability has to be [TS]

01:08:15   because the cat was never talking to her [TS]

01:08:17   and it was just something that children [TS]

01:08:19   do to play pretend to comfort themselves [TS]

01:08:20   during her transition that's why it was [TS]

01:08:22   so shocking when you know why you just [TS]

01:08:25   meowing why are you talking like a cat [TS]

01:08:26   it's like the cat has always been [TS]

01:08:27   talking there's never been a Santa you [TS]

01:08:29   just you didn't know that or it could [TS]

01:08:31   simply be that when she was young she [TS]

01:08:32   had a need to understand what the cat [TS]

01:08:34   was telling her and now she doesn't [TS]

01:08:36   here's what i would say she can't she [TS]

01:08:38   shouldn't lose the ability to hear the [TS]

01:08:39   cat and fly at the same time they should [TS]

01:08:43   be there too much in sync and there's no [TS]

01:08:45   occasionally they happen at the same [TS]

01:08:47   time it would be better if she can still [TS]

01:08:49   talk to the cat and then at the end when [TS]

01:08:51   she has grown up and succeeded and he [TS]

01:08:53   is his cat family and all that that [TS]

01:08:56   maybe then she can't hear him anymore [TS]

01:08:58   and it's a sign that she's growing up [TS]

01:08:59   because they happen simultaneously [TS]

01:09:01   you're in this weird part where it's [TS]

01:09:03   like you know why did why did these two [TS]

01:09:06   things happen and does she get both mile [TS]

01:09:09   my logic in that situation she gets both [TS]

01:09:11   of them back but there's a third there's [TS]

01:09:13   a third part to this that I hope we can [TS]

01:09:15   semi agree it was part of what makes [TS]

01:09:16   this so great is that you know in in a [TS]

01:09:18   lot of other movies that were told in [TS]

01:09:20   this way with the style with this story [TS]

01:09:22   it would have been something that [TS]

01:09:24   tactically said she's ok so there's that [TS]

01:09:27   we should also point out the wonderful [TS]

01:09:28   inversion of that the heartbreaking [TS]

01:09:30   scene where she can't fly [TS]

01:09:32   she's looking up at the sky and she sees [TS]

01:09:34   this up and going yeah combo in it and [TS]

01:09:35   it's just a perfectly encapsulates the [TS]

01:09:37   sort of feeling of being 13 years old I [TS]

01:09:39   mean and losing your mojo but it kind of [TS]

01:09:41   green road Zeppelin's are encompass my [TS]

01:09:44   my 13 year old self perfectly you don't [TS]

01:09:47   know where that Zeppelin's going you [TS]

01:09:49   don't know how inflated this up it's [TS]

01:09:50   gonna be me right into things that might [TS]

01:09:52   be a little kid big way that sometimes [TS]

01:09:54   it's pointing up at we're down the [TS]

01:09:55   sexual desire like not sure why [TS]

01:09:58   yeah you don't know it's like snow and [TS]

01:10:01   then you fly into the Clocktower and [TS]

01:10:02   deflate land on a building [TS]

01:10:04   how many inches or how long but the but [TS]

01:10:07   the thing is it's kinda cool though they [TS]

01:10:08   don't really hit the accelerator on the [TS]

01:10:10   whole like oh she's saving a man and [TS]

01:10:13   it's the love of her life and that you [TS]

01:10:15   know I didn't get that out of this and i [TS]

01:10:17   love that I you know because you could [TS]

01:10:19   so that all up way too tightly where [TS]

01:10:21   it's like oh now she's discovered like [TS]

01:10:23   she's got to save a boy and that now old [TS]

01:10:25   in a muscle top now she's really in the [TS]

01:10:27   post-credit sequence would be their [TS]

01:10:28   wedding but it is not their weddings the [TS]

01:10:30   Flying Club she's out there on the broom [TS]

01:10:32   flying they're all flying it that the [TS]

01:10:34   the prize at the end is that she gets to [TS]

01:10:36   be a person in society with friends [TS]

01:10:38   yeah she's it finally a degree we're [TS]

01:10:40   getting married now married now [TS]

01:10:42   well thatthat's throughout that I mean [TS]

01:10:44   that that's one of the fascinating [TS]

01:10:45   things that rings so true it's it defies [TS]

01:10:48   all logic and yet simultaneously rings [TS]

01:10:51   true which is that scene where she [TS]

01:10:53   they've survived their ridiculous bike [TS]

01:10:57   propeller incident and um and they're [TS]

01:11:01   laughing and then the kids in the car [TS]

01:11:03   drive up and he he's buddies with them [TS]

01:11:06   he's buddies with her [TS]

01:11:07   he thinks this is all going to be fine [TS]

01:11:08   and she's like I'm out of here right and [TS]

01:11:11   then she buy and then she goes back and [TS]

01:11:13   she she plants herself and this is she's [TS]

01:11:15   she it is this is I mean this is being a [TS]

01:11:17   teenager right it's she is amazingly [TS]

01:11:20   lonely and yet when given the option to [TS]

01:11:23   get involved in this [TS]

01:11:25   she was she's like no way and walks away [TS]

01:11:27   to be she's walking away from people and [TS]

01:11:29   then being sad that she's alone which is [TS]

01:11:31   so illogical and yet so completely true [TS]

01:11:34   it's a good movie and you know it's a [TS]

01:11:35   thing there's there's so many like these [TS]

01:11:37   these kind of money shots in miyazaki [TS]

01:11:39   movie one of the things I think you have [TS]

01:11:40   to make your peace and and I think Josh [TS]

01:11:42   but this very well in the past is it and [TS]

01:11:44   probably in better words than this but [TS]

01:11:45   that you have to make your peace with [TS]

01:11:47   the fact that there's gonna be stuff [TS]

01:11:48   that comes up in these movies it's never [TS]

01:11:50   really fully explained and there's never [TS]

01:11:52   know you could sit there and you can [TS]

01:11:53   have these Talmudic debates about it but [TS]

01:11:55   a big part of what makes these kinds of [TS]

01:11:57   music these movies so magical and again [TS]

01:11:59   i'm thinking of how i'm thinking of [TS]

01:12:01   castle in the sky i'm thinking about all [TS]

01:12:02   these movies are not princess monokey [TS]

01:12:04   but just be these things that happened a [TS]

01:12:06   certain way and that's that's just how [TS]

01:12:08   it is but it's you know how the [TS]

01:12:09   characters react to that and I don't [TS]

01:12:11   know that makes it still makes it so [TS]

01:12:13   great and keeps it to you to use that [TS]

01:12:15   word that so overused magical like why [TS]

01:12:17   did that happen we don't know why it's a [TS]

01:12:18   movie yeah I love that the big probably [TS]

01:12:21   the biggest single blow to Kiki at least [TS]

01:12:23   in the middle part of the movie is she [TS]

01:12:25   goes through all the trouble to to make [TS]

01:12:27   the the dreadful sounding herring and [TS]

01:12:29   pumpkin pie [TS]

01:12:30   oh man for grandma goes out fishes out [TS]

01:12:32   the firework and Stokes up the old brick [TS]

01:12:34   oven and cook the thing up and put in [TS]

01:12:37   all this work and then there's the whole [TS]

01:12:38   panic or she has to go in the rain and [TS]

01:12:41   probably the worst blow to her is the [TS]

01:12:43   fact that it in the whole film is the [TS]

01:12:45   fact that she gets there and the girl [TS]

01:12:46   says I hate grandma's supplies and slams [TS]

01:12:49   the door in your face and that was it [TS]

01:12:51   another two role models for her the old [TS]

01:12:53   widow woman who lives by herself but has [TS]

01:12:56   still has a certain dignity and lives [TS]

01:12:58   with her friends / lover Bertha right [TS]

01:13:01   just got four right and the horny [TS]

01:13:03   twisted lady that loves footage exactly [TS]

01:13:05   crash and cases i'll take your broom [TS]

01:13:09   dear [TS]

01:13:09   so she can go down the hallway and [TS]

01:13:10   pretend to ride the broom [TS]

01:13:12   she's a wild about lighter than air [TS]

01:13:13   travel she's [TS]

01:13:15   bullet that was a great scene where [TS]

01:13:17   she's she's caught on the broomstick [TS]

01:13:19   again they don't show her sneaking over [TS]

01:13:20   there whatever they just cut her and [TS]

01:13:21   what she's doing she's on the broom [TS]

01:13:23   pretending to be which is so that her [TS]

01:13:24   granddaughter it's the same girl that [TS]

01:13:26   she saw the same rich girl what they saw [TS]

01:13:28   in tombos group of friends and you know [TS]

01:13:30   she got what she sees her later and [TS]

01:13:32   that's I think that's really what kills [TS]

01:13:34   her at the end when when he calls her [TS]

01:13:36   over and she realizes that that's the [TS]

01:13:37   girl who was so horribly ungrateful [TS]

01:13:39   after all the work program and she's all [TS]

01:13:41   beautifully dressed up and it's her [TS]

01:13:43   birthday party and there is a party and [TS]

01:13:44   she's not going to be going to run [TS]

01:13:46   because she's drenched now and that girl [TS]

01:13:48   is is ungrateful and this is all like at [TS]

01:13:50   that moment she feels like her lowest of [TS]

01:13:52   low but later on they you know the sort [TS]

01:13:55   of the snootiness of that girl are the [TS]

01:13:56   girls on it [TS]

01:13:57   sports she's spoiled she's [TS]

01:13:58   unappreciative that's what one of the [TS]

01:14:00   things that brings Kiki around [TS]

01:14:01   understanding i don't want to be that [TS]

01:14:03   girl like that's that's one of that you [TS]

01:14:05   know that there's females in every [TS]

01:14:07   single age range she encountered [TS]

01:14:08   encounters female to female to female [TS]

01:14:09   from someone's her age 21 slightly older [TS]

01:14:12   to you know the personalized like [TS]

01:14:15   they've got the entire age range of [TS]

01:14:17   women mapped out and every one of them [TS]

01:14:18   keys looking at and again you never see [TS]

01:14:21   this movie talk about you don't see [TS]

01:14:22   movies female protagonist and even if [TS]

01:14:24   you do see it the female protagonist is [TS]

01:14:25   in a world of men and this shows [TS]

01:14:28   Oh a girl and what she sees in the world [TS]

01:14:31   is all the other women because that's [TS]

01:14:33   what she's trying to figure out who am I [TS]

01:14:34   going to be what am I gonna be like [TS]

01:14:35   she's not going to look at them to the [TS]

01:14:36   men to figure this out and it you know [TS]

01:14:38   it's so shocking just because everything [TS]

01:14:40   water movies is man and about men in the [TS]

01:14:42   world of men and women as accessories or [TS]

01:14:44   or it's about or it's about showing up [TS]

01:14:45   that bitch like that's the other thing [TS]

01:14:47   if you're gonna know if you're going to [TS]

01:14:48   have known with women in it is going to [TS]

01:14:50   be the central working girl thing where [TS]

01:14:52   you've got to have this this this big [TS]

01:14:54   tension between the underdog that we [TS]

01:14:56   love and this hottie person who needs to [TS]

01:14:58   be brought down because they're making [TS]

01:14:59   this person feel bad and and that that [TS]

01:15:01   is used for the amount of effect is [TS]

01:15:03   necessary here but then it doesn't turn [TS]

01:15:05   into something whether doing like a you [TS]

01:15:07   know death becomes her kind of [TS]

01:15:09   one-upmanship in fact the reaction that [TS]

01:15:11   Kiki has is not what I expect from her [TS]

01:15:13   right so she goes to all this trouble [TS]

01:15:14   goes through the rain with this terrible [TS]

01:15:17   hearing and pumpkin pie we with a [TS]

01:15:19   picture of a fish on it and and just [TS]

01:15:22   like I hate grandma's you close the door [TS]

01:15:24   close the door and instead of keeping [TS]

01:15:26   like boy you know what what an awful [TS]

01:15:28   person that was [TS]

01:15:29   she says wow I can't believe she's [TS]

01:15:31   related to that nice lady i love that [TS]

01:15:34   that is so great because that's what [TS]

01:15:35   that's what she's not personally [TS]

01:15:37   offended [TS]

01:15:38   she feels bad for for granny that's who [TS]

01:15:40   she feels bad for like right she's so [TS]

01:15:42   nice and this person is not but she [TS]

01:15:45   feels also like lower than low like the [TS]

01:15:48   trans the disparity because she's the [TS]

01:15:50   delivery girl she's drenched she's and [TS]

01:15:53   they also doesn't like our overriding [TS]

01:15:54   robe is unfashionable yeah it's just and [TS]

01:15:58   she tries like she's so hard like all [TS]

01:15:59   but it's wet now it's like I work really [TS]

01:16:01   hard to the food came through ok you [TS]

01:16:03   know give it a try like she's so she's [TS]

01:16:05   so good Kiki and like and she's forced [TS]

01:16:08   it to do all these things it's just you [TS]

01:16:10   know and Jason you mentioned before like [TS]

01:16:12   out your loan and when invited you you [TS]

01:16:14   turn down the invitation then you feel [TS]

01:16:15   alone [TS]

01:16:16   it's that a similar scene like that [TS]

01:16:18   which also ranked true to me early on in [TS]

01:16:19   the movie where tambo gives her the [TS]

01:16:21   invitation says miss which on it yes and [TS]

01:16:24   in english in the movie [TS]

01:16:26   yeah getting an invitation to be to go [TS]

01:16:29   to a social event is like the most [TS]

01:16:30   terrifying thing that could happen to [TS]

01:16:31   her and she immediately runs to her [TS]

01:16:32   current mother figure and says it's not [TS]

01:16:34   so much like I have to deliver that have [TS]

01:16:36   to look at the invitation is the crisis [TS]

01:16:38   yeah i've been invited to a party I have [TS]

01:16:39   no idea what I'm going to do and I've [TS]

01:16:41   seen that play out like candy but that's [TS]

01:16:43   the way yeah that that is the that is [TS]

01:16:45   the crisis and you know and like what [TS]

01:16:47   you mean or is this is exactly what you [TS]

01:16:48   wanted didn't you want to have friends [TS]

01:16:49   like that's not how it works when you're [TS]

01:16:51   13 years old [TS]

01:16:52   that's right by the way my favorite [TS]

01:16:54   detail in the movie is during that scene [TS]

01:16:56   where she's completely soaked and she [TS]

01:16:57   lands at the big house to deliver the [TS]

01:16:59   pie and you can tell how soap she is [TS]

01:17:02   because her humongous bow is suddenly [TS]

01:17:04   obeying the laws of physics whole rest [TS]

01:17:07   of the film is gigantic and is one scene [TS]

01:17:09   it's just drooping around the top of her [TS]

01:17:12   head it's a magical waters pouring added [TS]

01:17:14   it's wonderful and our asano her staring [TS]

01:17:17   at mother figure fills that role as well [TS]

01:17:20   in that after this all happens and after [TS]

01:17:22   this disaster is gone out in the sauna [TS]

01:17:24   knows that it's been a disaster and [TS]

01:17:25   those also knows enough to stay away [TS]

01:17:27   asanas next move in orchestrating keys [TS]

01:17:29   life from a distance in a motherly way [TS]

01:17:31   but not too heavy-handed is to send her [TS]

01:17:34   to deliver something to tambo the boy [TS]

01:17:35   waiting for for a while I in in a [TS]

01:17:38   reasonably clever way basically you know [TS]

01:17:39   he's taking bread from her own bakery [TS]

01:17:41   and paying key to deliver it [TS]

01:17:42   him and setting up that you know that [TS]

01:17:44   encounter well first she feeds oatmeal [TS]

01:17:47   and honey scalding oatmeal and honey to [TS]

01:17:49   a cat right warned him she said it was [TS]

01:17:52   hot everyone what do you want [TS]

01:17:53   well obviously he can't understand her [TS]

01:17:55   either cat he just can't help himself [TS]

01:17:58   but you don't you don't say don't burn [TS]

01:18:00   your tongue and then hand you know a [TS]

01:18:02   bowl of scalded milk to an animal with a [TS]

01:18:03   brain the size of a thumb [TS]

01:18:05   it's just even if it could talk [TS]

01:18:08   she's not know just not done Thank [TS]

01:18:10   templin over the old ladies I like me [TS]

01:18:14   she goes back to the old ladies I [TS]

01:18:15   thought that the old ladies things going [TS]

01:18:16   to be over but instead they say Baker [TS]

01:18:19   cake with yu-gi-oh sweet official key [TS]

01:18:23   logo and was that it was at a bread Kiki [TS]

01:18:25   that the Baker lady had put in the [TS]

01:18:27   window though the Baker husband did it [TS]

01:18:29   because I that's not a senior so she [TS]

01:18:31   when she's awake she's supposed to be [TS]

01:18:32   coming back for the party right and what [TS]

01:18:35   you see is the husband pacing back and [TS]

01:18:37   forth isn't working and at first you [TS]

01:18:39   think it's because he's worried about [TS]

01:18:40   her which she is and that you mean his [TS]

01:18:42   keys like two lines in the movie but his [TS]

01:18:44   character is fully revealed by the [TS]

01:18:45   things that I'm doing and the second [TS]

01:18:46   thing is that you realize that he's the [TS]

01:18:48   one who made the big bread key sign and [TS]

01:18:50   he's excited for her to see it when she [TS]

01:18:52   when she comes back and so right when he [TS]

01:18:54   sees it she's coming he runs and hides [TS]

01:18:55   because he doesn't want to be there when [TS]

01:18:57   she comes like he's too embarrassed that [TS]

01:18:58   I made this for you but he's excited [TS]

01:19:00   about her seeing and so when when she [TS]

01:19:01   sees it looks at it he casually strolled [TS]

01:19:03   in like 10 big deal just made a thing [TS]

01:19:05   for you and she jumps on him and give [TS]

01:19:06   him a hug all no dialogue all happening [TS]

01:19:08   through window from an outside shot [TS]

01:19:09   completely amazing [TS]

01:19:11   you wouldn't even see that in adult [TS]

01:19:12   live-action films they be like what's [TS]

01:19:14   going on there i don't understand like [TS]

01:19:15   watch the movie [TS]

01:19:16   everything is there a movie that's [TS]

01:19:18   what's the movie there's an airship at [TS]

01:19:20   the end i just i love the fact that you [TS]

01:19:23   know this dirigible has been forced to [TS]

01:19:25   land there and apparently the entire [TS]

01:19:27   town has gone original crazy [TS]

01:19:29   yes we see it on the TV in the bakery [TS]

01:19:31   and the two ladies are watching it as [TS]

01:19:33   you do is the fifties rigid airship [TS]

01:19:35   madness [TS]

01:19:36   it was isn't the fifties I never really [TS]

01:19:38   got a grip on what the time fit only get [TS]

01:19:40   from the look at the cars that's more or [TS]

01:19:41   less the arrows supposed to be [TS]

01:19:42   yeah and the end that seventies pop song [TS]

01:19:45   that sounds like it's from a cop any [TS]

01:19:47   duty duty but I you know I I I you know [TS]

01:19:51   I love I love a good separate movie i [TS]

01:19:53   have to admit i do love that [TS]

01:19:56   I is strange because there's this is the [TS]

01:19:58   opening line of dialogue in the movies [TS]

01:20:00   like and the airship might be passing [TS]

01:20:03   overhead or it might not be all right [TS]

01:20:05   okay and we get the we got an exciting [TS]

01:20:09   airship scene where there is actually it [TS]

01:20:10   does damage to the to the buildings of [TS]

01:20:13   course the most noticeable building in [TS]

01:20:17   town gets hit by the hit by the airship [TS]

01:20:20   i find it funny that everybody is really [TS]

01:20:22   worried about tambo who is dangling from [TS]

01:20:24   the airship but not worried about the [TS]

01:20:26   entire like cabin full of people who are [TS]

01:20:30   also on the air she was fine fine but [TS]

01:20:32   we'll be fine [TS]

01:20:33   certainly there safe because they're [TS]

01:20:35   inside the like you know the thing [TS]

01:20:37   yeah but if it specials every guy does [TS]

01:20:39   elliot yeah I'm sure it's not like it's [TS]

01:20:42   not like the pink paint caught on fire [TS]

01:20:44   there is a nice line that it that is it [TS]

01:20:46   we're full of helium so it won't explode [TS]

01:20:48   like it's not gonna be like a Hindenburg [TS]

01:20:51   thing if we die it's going to because we [TS]

01:20:52   smashed into something like the ground [TS]

01:20:55   with but was it at the end where she's [TS]

01:20:58   saved tambo and you can see them in [TS]

01:21:00   there in the cabin they're still up [TS]

01:21:01   there clapping and they're all excited [TS]

01:21:03   and celebrating [TS]

01:21:04   meanwhile they're hanging between two [TS]

01:21:06   high building yeah you you expect almost [TS]

01:21:07   like Prince that Italian Job moment [TS]

01:21:09   where it's like okay I've got a plan [TS]

01:21:11   thanks but I know how we're gonna get [TS]

01:21:13   out of here it's like I don't know [TS]

01:21:14   slowly let allowed to deflate and hope [TS]

01:21:16   that it just kind of sag Cinderella see [TS]

01:21:19   they're out of combat at that point so [TS]

01:21:21   they can just kick in this God right [TS]

01:21:22   that's that's good did Randy knowledge [TS]

01:21:25   area is right i imagine the key would [TS]

01:21:27   then like go up and shuttle them down [TS]

01:21:29   bit by bit or something maybe it doesn't [TS]

01:21:32   seem like she's got a real grip on that [TS]

01:21:33   push broom at that point that she would [TS]

01:21:35   have to get a bit much better broom that [TS]

01:21:37   was just a broom that was available to [TS]

01:21:38   her but she still got it at the end haha [TS]

01:21:40   what a great sequence [TS]

01:21:42   yeah and that's when it sits silent [TS]

01:21:45   she's on the brain with silent and then [TS]

01:21:47   there's like you know the the lucky [TS]

01:21:49   silence while followed by the the sound [TS]

01:21:51   the bristling it's like a oh yeah where [TS]

01:21:54   it comes to life basically like it's [TS]

01:21:57   gotta have already said she flies fly [TS]

01:21:59   and you expect her to you know [TS]

01:22:01   sky-rocket in perfect formation instead [TS]

01:22:04   she slams into the nearest building ball [TS]

01:22:06   bounces off another one with regular [TS]

01:22:08   she's lost with their foot yeah yeah and [TS]

01:22:10   they do it sounds against they have the [TS]

01:22:11   crowd booing oh you know the crowd noise [TS]

01:22:13   going on the announcer and everything [TS]

01:22:14   like that and all that fades out as [TS]

01:22:16   tambo falls and as she catches them so [TS]

01:22:18   that the the climax of the movie they [TS]

01:22:20   fade everything out including the [TS]

01:22:21   background cacophony of crowds that you [TS]

01:22:24   didn't realize I was was there until [TS]

01:22:25   they turn it off which is the best way [TS]

01:22:26   to use the one thing i do here is that [TS]

01:22:28   is her making her connecting with his [TS]

01:22:30   hand as she grabs and that's all you [TS]

01:22:32   here which is great so here's here's [TS]

01:22:34   something that my son notice that I've [TS]

01:22:35   never really thought about in all of my [TS]

01:22:37   times watching this movie but this time [TS]

01:22:38   today he noticed it which is as soon as [TS]

01:22:41   she soon as she catches tambo and saves [TS]

01:22:43   him everybody cheers and there's like [TS]

01:22:46   confetti or a ticker-tape parade [TS]

01:22:48   everywhere and he's like why is there [TS]

01:22:49   confetti [TS]

01:22:50   where did that come from and I'm like I [TS]

01:22:52   have no idea in this town they always [TS]

01:22:54   have it ready have it ready it's like [TS]

01:22:55   the fireworks [TS]

01:22:56   it's like the fireworks at the end of [TS]

01:22:57   Return of the Jedi or it's like well you [TS]

01:22:59   know normally we don't shoot off [TS]

01:23:00   fireworks here on the exams or the [TS]

01:23:03   x-wings have it is but we gotta decide [TS]

01:23:05   good happens we've got some fireworks to [TS]

01:23:08   fire off but if the sign is a big city [TS]

01:23:09   man it either it's confetti or it's like [TS]

01:23:12   really light rubble from the building's [TS]

01:23:14   maybe they were ready to celebrate this [TS]

01:23:16   is there a to celebrate the Zeppelin [TS]

01:23:18   maybe and put it had yeah those are [TS]

01:23:21   shreds of the cabin crews shirts they're [TS]

01:23:23   trying to fashion a rope to get down [TS]

01:23:25   know it crashed the plane crashed into a [TS]

01:23:26   building that had lots of paperwork and [TS]

01:23:28   the paperwork out shredded and blown out [TS]

01:23:30   and there was landing what it would be [TS]

01:23:32   my special movie in the eighties [TS]

01:23:33   business movie made 89 right so like [TS]

01:23:36   it's like the end of war game someone [TS]

01:23:37   else throw paper in there at the end of [TS]

01:23:38   every day the movie anyway watch for [TS]

01:23:41   that there's sudden sudden celebratory [TS]

01:23:42   confetti you get a letter from the mpaa [TS]

01:23:45   there's a couple questions we have got [TS]

01:23:47   to be new mall we looked a little bit [TS]

01:23:49   more people through when you and the [TS]

01:23:51   other the other standard speaking of [TS]

01:23:52   standards is that in miyazaki movies and [TS]

01:23:53   eighties movies in particular miyazaki [TS]

01:23:55   movies you have to have an incredibly [TS]

01:23:57   heartwarming and affecting sequence that [TS]

01:23:59   the credits roll over right if they [TS]

01:24:01   throw the Dean in the pool [TS]

01:24:03   not the same not the same at all like [TS]

01:24:06   I'm always amazed at integrated you drop [TS]

01:24:07   a police car to like not good enough [TS]

01:24:09   pretty awesome and I have the grad and [TS]

01:24:11   the details of the way of going over the [TS]

01:24:13   side of the deck oh yeah that's been the [TS]

01:24:15   one person that's still in the pool that [TS]

01:24:17   you see just kind of slowly moving here [TS]

01:24:19   from the splash [TS]

01:24:20   no detail is too small because some guy [TS]

01:24:23   spent three weeks on that and then at [TS]

01:24:25   the end we get the letter back to her [TS]

01:24:27   parents that we were promised at the [TS]

01:24:29   very beginning her mother still if [TS]

01:24:30   distracted will have one of her test [TS]

01:24:32   tubes explode with black smoke and she [TS]

01:24:36   gets the letter saying i'm fine i'm [TS]

01:24:38   doing ok we discovered that it takes [TS]

01:24:40   roughly three days to rebuild a clock [TS]

01:24:43   tower sure that there are very [TS]

01:24:46   industrious people look at the town that [TS]

01:24:48   strap and essentially all that confetti [TS]

01:24:50   was just rubble from them already trying [TS]

01:24:52   to fix up the tower there are already [TS]

01:24:53   people are soon as we have results it [TS]

01:24:55   was the actually the wrapping of the new [TS]

01:24:56   tower than it already been kept stepping [TS]

01:24:58   that's the pair had just cut the ribbon [TS]

01:25:00   was that fast [TS]

01:25:01   that's right well Tom but was following [TS]

01:25:02   that all happened like think about these [TS]

01:25:05   movies that have the credit sequences [TS]

01:25:06   what would the movies be like if they [TS]

01:25:09   didn't have the credit sequence like if [TS]

01:25:10   the movie actually ended and they just [TS]

01:25:12   showed names / black and I was it like [TS]

01:25:14   how would how would you feel about the [TS]

01:25:16   movies differently if you know it [TS]

01:25:18   totoro I mean to her as a smaller one [TS]

01:25:20   this one has won a whole bunch of the [TS]

01:25:22   the i mean i can cancel this guy has one [TS]

01:25:24   as well [TS]

01:25:25   or maybe it's just too pretty cries when [TS]

01:25:26   I way I always feel like that that part [TS]

01:25:28   of the movie is a shorthand way to give [TS]

01:25:32   you a satisfying ending it wouldn't work [TS]

01:25:34   if you cut it out but you don't have [TS]

01:25:36   time to do everything that's in the [TS]

01:25:37   credit sequences it's like it's almost [TS]

01:25:39   like cheating with like a montage like [TS]

01:25:40   we don't want to show a montage and we [TS]

01:25:42   don't want to have some silly scene [TS]

01:25:43   where they exchanged two lines of [TS]

01:25:44   dialogue to be established but we just [TS]

01:25:46   want to show like and this is what [TS]

01:25:47   happens in the immediate future of these [TS]

01:25:49   characters I in a way that doesn't feel [TS]

01:25:52   weird because we tried to rush into try [TS]

01:25:54   to have multiple things that wouldn't [TS]

01:25:55   work but I think everybody like flies in [TS]

01:25:57   on the credit sequence like who doesn't [TS]

01:25:59   like that whose heart is not worn by [TS]

01:26:01   saying that sequence in the credits and [TS]

01:26:02   you don't go like that ending the movie [TS]

01:26:04   was weird I thought they rushed at the [TS]

01:26:05   end when they tried to show what [TS]

01:26:06   happened to the character shoes ended [TS]

01:26:08   like no one ever feels that way i don't [TS]

01:26:09   know why more movies don't use this but [TS]

01:26:11   I guess Marvel movies accepted but like [TS]

01:26:14   the animation equivalent of that that [TS]

01:26:16   whole animal house thing Dean wormer [TS]

01:26:17   went to prison where he was prepared but [TS]

01:26:19   it's but it's not that ham-fisted like [TS]

01:26:21   this they're not like like the things [TS]

01:26:23   are seeing are essential to the story [TS]

01:26:25   you're not wondering what happened to me [TS]

01:26:26   just want to be like because you already [TS]

01:26:27   know Kiki is going to be okay but you [TS]

01:26:29   also want the payoff scene of seeing it [TS]

01:26:31   but let's you be very economical with [TS]

01:26:32   cutting it off when the story's done [TS]

01:26:34   and in the case of liquid total it's a [TS]

01:26:36   little bit more luxurious but in this [TS]

01:26:37   case when you see her Dashiell on the [TS]

01:26:40   broom in the credits come up you like [TS]

01:26:41   wow that was that was really the end is [TS]

01:26:43   over that's it that was I think it's [TS]

01:26:45   great i think they could they could [TS]

01:26:47   probably have avoided that by making the [TS]

01:26:48   ending a little less abrupt but well I'm [TS]

01:26:51   like a sauna gives birth we know she was [TS]

01:26:52   really no she goes into labor [TS]

01:26:54   we assume everything came out ok but [TS]

01:26:55   just in case you're wondering here's [TS]

01:26:57   asano she's there now here's the baby [TS]

01:26:59   here's the dad they're happy they're [TS]

01:27:01   watching key they know she's happy like [TS]

01:27:03   it's all the things that you want to [TS]

01:27:04   know our our reality after the movie [TS]

01:27:07   ends that you can assume they are but [TS]

01:27:08   they give you the payoff like here you [TS]

01:27:10   go here's a picture of her and the baby [TS]

01:27:13   and you know this is with us what [TS]

01:27:14   happened anyway but just seeing them [TS]

01:27:15   makes you happier than just be thinking [TS]

01:27:17   I bet she had the baby now on it but [TS]

01:27:19   that's wonderful especially with totoro [TS]

01:27:21   where you i mean the the genius stroke [TS]

01:27:23   of courses showing me show the family [TS]

01:27:25   show them then you show the total rows [TS]

01:27:27   and then you show the implicit kind of [TS]

01:27:29   interaction of them to you know I did [TS]

01:27:31   that I think that's particularly [TS]

01:27:33   delightful in total that was critical [TS]

01:27:34   because you have to have mom came home [TS]

01:27:36   somewhere yeah i mean that but that's [TS]

01:27:38   the first thing on sequences her coming [TS]

01:27:40   out of the cab or whatever with arms [TS]

01:27:42   wide open and the kids running towards [TS]

01:27:44   or like you know that's why I'm going to [TS]

01:27:45   get well yeah the payoff a little bit [TS]

01:27:47   and so on this one another sequence here [TS]

01:27:49   like earlier on the movie key is looking [TS]

01:27:52   at shoes and the window shoes that she [TS]

01:27:54   can't afford while she's in the city and [TS]

01:27:55   she just sits there staring at them for [TS]

01:27:57   a while and I think like some people [TS]

01:27:58   come by behind or whatever and the [TS]

01:27:59   credit sequence she's still staring at [TS]

01:28:01   choosing the window we're just showing [TS]

01:28:02   that yes there are still going to be [TS]

01:28:04   things that you want that you can have [TS]

01:28:05   because you don't suddenly become the [TS]

01:28:06   richest most powerful princess in the [TS]

01:28:08   entire world you get everything you want [TS]

01:28:09   but while she's staring at the shoes one [TS]

01:28:12   of the people who passes by her is a [TS]

01:28:14   mother with a little girl and the little [TS]

01:28:15   girls dress like II the hero of the town [TS]

01:28:17   and she her head turns and she's like [TS]

01:28:19   whoa you know that's that's quite a [TS]

01:28:22   complicated payoff out of like they [TS]

01:28:25   don't show her and now she's got those [TS]

01:28:26   red shoes she wanted up she still at the [TS]

01:28:28   window looking at the fancy shoes but [TS]

01:28:29   also she's admired and looked up to [TS]

01:28:32   about a little girls and their dress [TS]

01:28:33   like she is that is fairly that's a [TS]

01:28:37   fairly complicated thing to put into [TS]

01:28:38   kids movie for a kid to unpack but i [TS]

01:28:40   think that like gets through to them the [TS]

01:28:42   key would be a great halloween costume [TS]

01:28:44   for a twelve-year-old girl by the way [TS]

01:28:46   they wanna wait for that matter [TS]

01:28:48   sure big but not that much girly about [TS]

01:28:50   big bow big dark robe you know room is [TS]

01:28:55   black with a last-second throw together [TS]

01:28:57   kind of it's still a good with costumes [TS]

01:29:00   were both students everybody would know [TS]

01:29:01   who you were [TS]

01:29:02   anybody who's seen this movie really go [TS]

01:29:03   big bow key sure it's kinky [TS]

01:29:06   yeah Steve you have not seen this movie [TS]

01:29:09   before [TS]

01:29:09   that's correct and i have now seen it [TS]

01:29:11   twice both times with the dub I i would [TS]

01:29:14   I i watched it again today just to kind [TS]

01:29:16   of you know having it fresh in my mind [TS]

01:29:19   and i decided i'd rather watch the [TS]

01:29:21   double right sit down and watch it with [TS]

01:29:22   the kids are rather watch the japanese [TS]

01:29:24   version or watch with the kids and I [TS]

01:29:26   think kids both wanted to watch it so we [TS]

01:29:28   said watch it together [TS]

01:29:29   so what's what's your what's your [TS]

01:29:30   verdict and what's their verdict about [TS]

01:29:31   it as new new viewers i thought it was [TS]

01:29:34   great [TS]

01:29:35   uh yeah i really enjoyed it at once I [TS]

01:29:38   you know kind of got over the fact that [TS]

01:29:39   you know no one's going to be stabbed at [TS]

01:29:42   something horrible with the oven and [TS]

01:29:44   this is so much you know even even just [TS]

01:29:46   things like that you expect the painter [TS]

01:29:48   to have you to give up the cat with more [TS]

01:29:50   of a fight you know or you know Gigi [TS]

01:29:53   having a tougher time getting away from [TS]

01:29:54   the dog but you know once i once I got [TS]

01:29:55   past that I really kind of I sort of [TS]

01:29:58   like luxuriating in the slow pace of the [TS]

01:30:01   thing and just kind of appreciating the [TS]

01:30:03   animation as it comes [TS]

01:30:04   I given though how sort of gentle and [TS]

01:30:08   quiet and and not fast cut things were I [TS]

01:30:11   kind of expected the kids to get up and [TS]

01:30:13   leave after a while but they didn't they [TS]

01:30:14   watched they joined it didn't say much [TS]

01:30:17   during the film the boy enjoyed the the [TS]

01:30:21   the cats antics [TS]

01:30:23   mmm big a fan video here i think i think [TS]

01:30:25   the the phil hartman I mean we sound so [TS]

01:30:28   snooty talking about you know watch in [TS]

01:30:29   Japanese or whatever but i mean the the [TS]

01:30:31   dubbed version is great it's really [TS]

01:30:33   really good i would not wanna I would [TS]

01:30:36   not want anybody to think like don't [TS]

01:30:37   show this to your kids unless they can [TS]

01:30:38   speak Japanese because it is really [TS]

01:30:40   great and the heart and character might [TS]

01:30:41   you know my daughter's got a GG you know [TS]

01:30:43   plush toys she loves the phil hartman g [TS]

01:30:46   character i would not would not worry [TS]

01:30:48   about robbing a six-year-old of that [TS]

01:30:50   experience because they'll speak [TS]

01:30:51   Japanese yet my daughter made the [TS]

01:30:53   observation early on and she's sitting [TS]

01:30:55   in the room right now so she's pregnant [TS]

01:30:56   be very [TS]

01:30:56   mr. i'm talking about her but at any [TS]

01:30:58   rate yeah one of the one of the few [TS]

01:31:00   things that was mentioned is really [TS]

01:31:02   early on when she's getting ready to go [TS]

01:31:04   and she wants dad to pick her up i like [TS]

01:31:06   when she was little she pointed out [TS]

01:31:07   she's having some notes through she [TS]

01:31:10   pointed out she is not a [TS]

01:31:11   thirteen-year-old she acts more like an [TS]

01:31:13   eight-year-old which I thought was [TS]

01:31:15   fairly percent but from the dads are one [TS]

01:31:17   of you like I mean my daughter is seven [TS]

01:31:20   and she does that exact same thing and [TS]

01:31:22   wants me to pick her up over i had like [TS]

01:31:24   I used to and I do it pretty much [TS]

01:31:26   opposed that dad doesn't like you get [TS]

01:31:28   your backs are snaps you're gonna tap [TS]

01:31:30   and you know that eventually presently [TS]

01:31:32   you won't be able to do this anymore but [TS]

01:31:34   you keep trying to do it i mean that [TS]

01:31:35   that seems a little bit for the parents [TS]

01:31:36   more than romantic I i will tell you [TS]

01:31:38   that that seemed means a lot more to me [TS]

01:31:41   now with a 12 year old daughter than it [TS]

01:31:44   did when I was watching with a six-year [TS]

01:31:46   a it means a lot more right but it's a [TS]

01:31:49   great moment as a pair but it's also key [TS]

01:31:51   that you see Kiki be a kid right [TS]

01:31:55   yes she's about to go out riding this [TS]

01:31:56   big adventure where she's she can't be [TS]

01:31:57   anymore it's got to get that lonely [TS]

01:31:59   getting in the last little bits like I [TS]

01:32:01   mean that and that's why the dad [TS]

01:32:02   whispering are you know you can always [TS]

01:32:03   you can always come home if the domain [TS]

01:32:06   like yeah right so yeah I think I heard [TS]

01:32:10   her say that and I thought oh no the [TS]

01:32:11   sort of Japanese over-the-top miss of [TS]

01:32:13   some of these things is is gonna sort of [TS]

01:32:15   throw her off but really it was it was [TS]

01:32:18   deserve a point so in the end and [TS]

01:32:19   actually ended up working i think very [TS]

01:32:21   well yeah everybody enjoyed it i thought [TS]

01:32:23   it was great [TS]

01:32:23   I'll probably watch it a few more times [TS]

01:32:25   and and like it more because I can tell [TS]

01:32:27   this is one of those growers yes it is [TS]

01:32:30   and i want to i want to reinforce that [TS]

01:32:32   that that what you said about we can be [TS]

01:32:34   we can be snooty about this I i find it [TS]

01:32:37   interesting if you think you know a [TS]

01:32:39   movie to watch to turn off the the [TS]

01:32:41   English dub and watching japanese with [TS]

01:32:43   subtitles [TS]

01:32:44   it gives you a different perspective on [TS]

01:32:45   the movie which i think is interesting [TS]

01:32:47   for a movie that that you've watched a [TS]

01:32:49   lot but yes i'm at i'm a gigantic phil [TS]

01:32:52   hartman fan i think i love almost well [TS]

01:32:55   not everything you did cuz he did some [TS]

01:32:56   really crappy movies but he did a lot of [TS]

01:32:58   amazing stuff and this is a really fun [TS]

01:33:01   performance from him and if all you do [TS]

01:33:03   is listen to the japanese version with [TS]

01:33:05   subtitles [TS]

01:33:06   you're missing out on a a different but [TS]

01:33:08   good experience [TS]

01:33:10   so I just wanted to make a quick i mean [TS]

01:33:13   i challenge you to find that manager [TS]

01:33:14   John come up with a handful but there's [TS]

01:33:16   not that many non american movies I'd [TS]

01:33:20   say foreign not American movies in [TS]

01:33:22   movies are not in English you're not [TS]

01:33:23   gonna find that many movies that are [TS]

01:33:26   that are survive the dubbing process [TS]

01:33:28   better than these miyazaki movies [TS]

01:33:30   I mean they're not perfect but they are [TS]

01:33:32   so much better than a than a bunch of [TS]

01:33:34   them i mean even watching we're watching [TS]

01:33:35   now let's say we weren't watching this [TS]

01:33:37   because this wouldn't be appropriate [TS]

01:33:38   watching the anime x-men today and like [TS]

01:33:41   you know it's I you know it's good but I [TS]

01:33:44   mean but something John whenever you [TS]

01:33:45   talk about how sometimes the characters [TS]

01:33:47   are actually saying anything and then [TS]

01:33:49   but you know in the english version they [TS]

01:33:51   feel the need to add things to remember [TS]

01:33:52   back at all about comfort movies all [TS]

01:33:55   your yoga master and you've got all [TS]

01:33:57   these unnecessary grunts and try and [TS]

01:33:59   fill everything like mouth movement with [TS]

01:34:01   some kind of sound and and i have to say [TS]

01:34:03   like you know it would be a really real [TS]

01:34:05   disservice if we made people think that [TS]

01:34:07   this isn't okay to watch that because it [TS]

01:34:09   is there there are I think the Toros [TS]

01:34:11   another one is just obviously so [TS]

01:34:12   fantastic their other there are a few [TS]

01:34:14   such moments in this dub like there's a [TS]

01:34:16   scene where she's at the mirror and she [TS]

01:34:18   opens her mouth real life she says yeah [TS]

01:34:21   yeah look it comes off a little weird [TS]

01:34:27   but instead they are very very well to [TS]

01:34:29   deal with the distance [TS]

01:34:30   disney's deal with the distribution of [TS]

01:34:31   their stuffs of the studio ghibli stuff [TS]

01:34:34   is the my understanding is they're not [TS]

01:34:36   allowed to change the video at all and [TS]

01:34:39   so right dubs like your force like they [TS]

01:34:42   basically said no we can't touch a [TS]

01:34:43   friend but can we cut out that part [TS]

01:34:44   where she has her mouth open for an [TS]

01:34:45   extended period of time because there's [TS]

01:34:46   no syllable in English that does that is [TS]

01:34:48   like no you actually can't change the [TS]

01:34:49   video but what you can do is you know [TS]

01:34:52   what we have traditionally done and make [TS]

01:34:53   her draw out somewhere so I'm so glad [TS]

01:34:56   that there because like with a with [TS]

01:34:58   nausea they did that terrible warriors [TS]

01:35:00   of the wind thing where they just chop [TS]

01:35:01   the video to bits i think that's kind of [TS]

01:35:03   what drove the future deal which said [TS]

01:35:05   you can distribute our movies in America [TS]

01:35:07   you but you cannot change the frame of [TS]

01:35:09   the video right that's a good movie [TS]

01:35:11   question for anybody who's who has [TS]

01:35:13   watched the Japanese which i guess is [TS]

01:35:15   all of you except me i understand that [TS]

01:35:18   when Disney did the dub they also [TS]

01:35:19   changed a lot of the music cues they [TS]

01:35:21   made it's a bit more bombastic not just [TS]

01:35:23   that the opening and closing songs but [TS]

01:35:25   also some of the actual score is that [TS]

01:35:28   scaled back in the japanese version or [TS]

01:35:30   is it still have the same i'm not that I [TS]

01:35:32   noticed i think i mean the beginning in [TS]

01:35:35   any music or different is their middle [TS]

01:35:37   part they said that they added there is [TS]

01:35:38   there is little bit yeah there's that [TS]

01:35:40   the tinkling kind of song i think maybe [TS]

01:35:42   around the time that she's on the bike [TS]

01:35:44   with it there's actually a different [TS]

01:35:45   middle song in the japanese one that's [TS]

01:35:48   not that's not as dramatic as a song [TS]

01:35:49   they put in the english but i think it's [TS]

01:35:50   about it it's just different [TS]

01:35:52   I mean this is the interesting thing is [TS]

01:35:53   they're just different there and neither [TS]

01:35:55   of them and then again neither of them [TS]

01:35:58   is the definitive because the definitive [TS]

01:35:59   is your Japanese you understand Japanese [TS]

01:36:02   you understand Japanese culture and you [TS]

01:36:03   watch the movie and I can't do that so I [TS]

01:36:07   be really curious to hear your take [TS]

01:36:08   Jason on the 2010 version that i watched [TS]

01:36:10   because it sounds like all the things [TS]

01:36:12   that they deliberately removed from the [TS]

01:36:14   original disney dub were smart boobs [TS]

01:36:17   this is why i'm waiting for the blu-ray [TS]

01:36:19   because i assume the blu-ray will be [TS]

01:36:21   that same that same take on it and and I [TS]

01:36:24   want to get this in HD and I think [TS]

01:36:26   that'll be that'll be graded it does it [TS]

01:36:28   sound so sure did Lucas is part of that [TS]

01:36:30   initiate it sounds like they backed off [TS]

01:36:32   it sounds like they really heard [TS]

01:36:35   the criticism of some of the changes or [TS]

01:36:38   whether they heard that from fans or [TS]

01:36:40   they or I imagine some of it might be [TS]

01:36:42   John Lasseter because he's now in a [TS]

01:36:44   position of authority at Disney and his [TS]

01:36:46   Lordships music and he worships miyazaki [TS]

01:36:48   so I think maybe even Lassiter's like [TS]

01:36:50   can we do some things can we fix this a [TS]

01:36:52   little bit before we put it out again [TS]

01:36:53   and and so I think that's cool because [TS]

01:36:56   it sounds like they they've made it and [TS]

01:36:58   they've used that good dub and brought [TS]

01:37:00   it back a little to make it a little [TS]

01:37:02   more like the original here's a pro tip [TS]

01:37:04   for watching the you're watching a [TS]

01:37:06   subtitled versions of these movies [TS]

01:37:08   miyazaki movie studio ghibli movies in [TS]

01:37:10   general [TS]

01:37:11   turn off the subtitles during the [TS]

01:37:13   credits because in these movies the [TS]

01:37:16   credit sequences are often you know [TS]

01:37:19   knows it was a great example like a [TS]

01:37:20   little mini movies in and of themselves [TS]

01:37:22   and their framed with the Japanese [TS]

01:37:24   credits which you can't read fine just [TS]

01:37:26   pretend they're a nice little art [TS]

01:37:27   they're framed with the action in the [TS]

01:37:29   credits you know just so and when they [TS]

01:37:31   put the American credits on they have to [TS]

01:37:33   cover the action and totally destroyed [TS]

01:37:35   the composition of all the frames turn [TS]

01:37:36   off the subtitles during the credits to [TS]

01:37:38   turn them back on with the movie starts [TS]

01:37:40   wandering the grounds and I wish that [TS]

01:37:41   was the default mode like not that I [TS]

01:37:43   don't want to see the English names of [TS]

01:37:44   these people or whatever but that's [TS]

01:37:46   that's part of the movie and I feel like [TS]

01:37:47   they are altering the video by saying [TS]

01:37:49   well there's a block of japanese text [TS]

01:37:50   over here [TS]

01:37:51   Kiki's over there and we're gonna put [TS]

01:37:52   these English names right over Kiki no [TS]

01:37:54   don't do that whereas whereas in the [TS]

01:37:55   dubbed version they just take out the [TS]

01:37:57   Japanese and replace it with English [TS]

01:38:00   were right so they also mess up the [TS]

01:38:02   composition on that is true they do [TS]

01:38:04   because they don't fit the same as good [TS]

01:38:05   as the worst one though it's not as it [TS]

01:38:06   goes like this beautiful little mini [TS]

01:38:08   tone poem of credits and there is no [TS]

01:38:11   place to put English words anywhere made [TS]

01:38:13   and they do and it's terrible so turn [TS]

01:38:15   them off [TS]

01:38:15   alright one other question about the [TS]

01:38:17   original Japanese is the naked line in [TS]

01:38:20   there I don't know enough Japanese it's [TS]

01:38:23   in the subtitle version is really nice [TS]

01:38:25   is that doesn't tell you anything but I [TS]

01:38:27   imagine it would be because like again [TS]

01:38:29   that's like it comes to see my actions [TS]

01:38:32   etching not invited yeah that's under I [TS]

01:38:34   was just frankly amazed she wants she [TS]

01:38:36   wants to do a drawing with me in it says [TS]

01:38:38   Kiki and his responses naked and its [TS]

01:38:41   just oh tu so nasty it's it's just it's [TS]

01:38:45   got such a rye feel to it I was [TS]

01:38:47   surprised that they kept it intact in [TS]

01:38:49   the Disney version because it's that's [TS]

01:38:51   it that's a pretty good entendre right [TS]

01:38:54   there but it if that is in the movie [TS]

01:38:56   though which I can imagine it would be [TS]

01:38:57   because again the Japanese an artist [TS]

01:38:58   puritanical we are about this it's still [TS]

01:39:00   a it fits into the theme of the movie [TS]

01:39:02   because it's a certain point like the [TS]

01:39:04   idea of her seeing herself as a sexual [TS]

01:39:06   being other people seeing her that way [TS]

01:39:07   or that being a possibility and not just [TS]

01:39:09   being a giggle worthy thing is part of [TS]

01:39:11   the act of growing up and like that [TS]

01:39:13   touch on it just barely there and that's [TS]

01:39:16   that's how it begins like you just can't [TS]

01:39:17   nobody touch on just barely just another [TS]

01:39:20   thought on there in that respect when [TS]

01:39:21   the cat stop stalking its around the [TS]

01:39:23   time that he hooks up with the the hot [TS]

01:39:25   female kitty [TS]

01:39:26   so maybe that's his story that you see [TS]

01:39:28   in this is so Randy Garcia on Twitter [TS]

01:39:30   want heat while listening to us said to [TS]

01:39:32   me it's not the key grows up [TS]

01:39:34   it's the g grows up and is no longer [TS]

01:39:36   interested in human so that i crack [TS]

01:39:39   that's very cat right there to like that [TS]

01:39:41   cats are never interested in humans so [TS]

01:39:43   yeah they start out I know what he [TS]

01:39:45   learned his lesson [TS]

01:39:46   John you had something yes I'd like this [TS]

01:39:48   this is also my favorite miyazaki movie [TS]

01:39:51   uh I don't remember when I first saw it [TS]

01:39:52   but it was probably way back in the [TS]

01:39:54   eighties and I think I first saw it like [TS]

01:39:55   at home you know like by myself during [TS]

01:39:59   the summer is just one of those one of [TS]

01:40:01   those lazy summer day kind of moves from [TS]

01:40:03   89 so i'm not too sure it's even got [TS]

01:40:05   here until like 90 91 something I I [TS]

01:40:07   don't remember where I even where I saw [TS]

01:40:09   it like it was definitely one of those [TS]

01:40:11   kind of relaxing movies you just like [TS]

01:40:13   are surprised by your sort of let it [TS]

01:40:15   happen and it's just grown and grown on [TS]

01:40:18   me over the years and my plan with my [TS]

01:40:20   kids that I executed was the image but i [TS]

01:40:22   would i would in dr. ate them with many [TS]

01:40:25   movies that i'm dr. with this was a big [TS]

01:40:27   one like the two things I was leaning [TS]

01:40:28   heavily were basically like Star Wars [TS]

01:40:30   and miyazaki and of all the miyazaki [TS]

01:40:32   this is the movie that I kept showing [TS]

01:40:34   them like first of all this is you can [TS]

01:40:36   show this like total you can show this [TS]

01:40:37   to a two-year-old like you can show us [TS]

01:40:39   that to anybody and most kids will not [TS]

01:40:42   be frightened by over and i just showed [TS]

01:40:43   it to them constantly and both my son [TS]

01:40:46   and my daughter because it is such like [TS]

01:40:48   I knew that what they were going to see [TS]

01:40:49   for their entire lives were sort of [TS]

01:40:52   Western action movies with male [TS]

01:40:54   protagonists that are just like we all [TS]

01:40:56   know what that's gonna be like [TS]

01:40:57   everything they see is going to be like [TS]

01:40:58   that including Star Wars for that matter [TS]

01:41:00   like it's all going to be like that [TS]

01:41:01   have so many so few go tues for [TS]

01:41:04   realistic depictions of young self [TS]

01:41:08   actualized females that I just saturated [TS]

01:41:10   them to the degree now that i think my [TS]

01:41:12   seven-year-old daughter every time I [TS]

01:41:13   bring movies like I want to see that [TS]

01:41:14   again like she's smoothie thousands of [TS]

01:41:17   times and I strongly encourage every [TS]

01:41:19   parent of sons or daughters to get this [TS]

01:41:23   movie to get Toto and just to show them [TS]

01:41:26   constantly so that they're burned into [TS]

01:41:27   your children's DNA is because until it [TS]

01:41:29   once they enter that wider world all [TS]

01:41:31   they're gonna see is the generic like [TS]

01:41:33   there's just so few good examples of [TS]

01:41:35   this and it kills me that this issue of [TS]

01:41:37   them and I maybe I'm burning my children [TS]

01:41:39   out in this movie but this movie is a [TS]

01:41:41   parenting tool I feel like come on daddy [TS]

01:41:44   watch a princess tonight I believe me [TS]

01:41:46   when i say the princess you're never [TS]

01:41:48   going to stop that like she has seen all [TS]

01:41:50   the other movies I some people feel the [TS]

01:41:52   same way about frozen but I feel even [TS]

01:41:54   more strongly about these movies that [TS]

01:41:55   they are they are sort of just gentle [TS]

01:41:59   and even-handed and just just good like [TS]

01:42:02   they're not educationally but just [TS]

01:42:04   couldn't lose you can I want this movie [TS]

01:42:05   to be part of like the internal [TS]

01:42:07   emotional landscape of my children [TS]

01:42:08   essentially and so I've done I've done [TS]

01:42:10   that through repetition I hope and [TS]

01:42:12   that's how i feel about these movies and [TS]

01:42:14   I'm essentially willing to to trust my [TS]

01:42:15   children trust them with my children I i [TS]

01:42:17   agree with everything you said but I [TS]

01:42:18   also want to add that they're weird [TS]

01:42:20   which is great haha no I'm seriously so [TS]

01:42:23   many there's so much can you know and [TS]

01:42:25   like we're joking about like expecting [TS]

01:42:26   you know like a bank vault to fall in [TS]

01:42:28   somebody's head or something but I mean [TS]

01:42:29   you know we got the way we are from [TS]

01:42:32   watching certain kind of cartoon a [TS]

01:42:34   reading a certain kind of comic over and [TS]

01:42:35   over and over and I think you could do [TS]

01:42:37   worse than introducing something like [TS]

01:42:38   this when they're ready for it yet [TS]

01:42:39   spirited away when they're ready for it [TS]

01:42:41   because I mean what happens in these [TS]

01:42:43   movies like you know like you're making [TS]

01:42:44   funny a John because I'd finally seen [TS]

01:42:46   nautica and that in Prince monokey were [TS]

01:42:49   to that and I mean I guess I'm glad we [TS]

01:42:52   waited awhile because they're both like [TS]

01:42:54   declar they're a little their little [TS]

01:42:56   rougher you have the correct they are [TS]

01:42:57   but oh my god princess [TS]

01:42:59   they're both so goddamn weird if they're [TS]

01:43:02   just extremely extremely stress it's [TS]

01:43:04   very difficult to even explain what [TS]

01:43:06   happens in some sequences because [TS]

01:43:07   Stephen describing what combination of [TS]

01:43:09   fantastic animals this looks like it's [TS]

01:43:11   impossible and its kind of bleeding but [TS]

01:43:13   it's not it's all soup [TS]

01:43:14   you're weird but i think that's really [TS]

01:43:16   good i really like my daughter started i [TS]

01:43:18   started showing her Marx Brothers movies [TS]

01:43:19   where like she's gonna have absolutely [TS]

01:43:21   no idea what's happened but she she asks [TS]

01:43:24   talk about a gift a kid who wants to [TS]

01:43:26   watch duck soup like I want her to sit [TS]

01:43:28   there and have a process what's going on [TS]

01:43:29   in this and and and nana I'm not mean I [TS]

01:43:33   mean it merely just as like some kind of [TS]

01:43:34   an sa80 study program but i think the [TS]

01:43:37   idea of putting things in front of your [TS]

01:43:38   kids they don't expect that they're [TS]

01:43:39   gonna have to ask questions about or [TS]

01:43:40   just wonder about i mean it's it's just [TS]

01:43:42   so easy to sit down and I'm the [TS]

01:43:44   trash-talking a hero or something but [TS]

01:43:46   it's just so easy to sit down and walk [TS]

01:43:48   through that same little Candyland game [TS]

01:43:50   of these same 35 movies that all their [TS]

01:43:52   friends have seen and I like the idea of [TS]

01:43:54   challenging them to like see something [TS]

01:43:56   that doesn't on the face of it make a [TS]

01:43:58   lot of sense i'm an old guy and I don't [TS]

01:43:59   understand all of it so I think that's a [TS]

01:44:01   really good exercise when they're ready [TS]

01:44:02   for it I think it's a really good idea [TS]

01:44:03   and like the internal landscape of all [TS]

01:44:06   their friends are going to be beauty and [TS]

01:44:08   the beast aladdin snow white monster [TS]

01:44:11   high like like about like move some of [TS]

01:44:14   these are really good but great are very [TS]

01:44:16   much like you can describe this movie on [TS]

01:44:18   the playground and it'll make sense and [TS]

01:44:19   how many movies do they see where they [TS]

01:44:22   were there is ineffable quality to it I [TS]

01:44:24   don't just say magic but there's nothing [TS]

01:44:25   inevitable about it was like we kind of [TS]

01:44:27   just got to see it to really get it [TS]

01:44:28   yeah and the kids don't appreciate all [TS]

01:44:30   these nuances of these movies were [TS]

01:44:31   discussing but I really do feel like [TS]

01:44:32   they internalize them and that like that [TS]

01:44:34   I basically what I'm trying to do is [TS]

01:44:36   like I want the inside of my children to [TS]

01:44:39   be something different in some small way [TS]

01:44:41   than the inside of a other children [TS]

01:44:43   because i want to give them an [TS]

01:44:44   experience that they wouldn't have is [TS]

01:44:46   they're all that experience they were [TS]

01:44:47   talking about they're gonna get that [TS]

01:44:48   whether we do it or not like there's [TS]

01:44:51   nothing we can do to stop them from from [TS]

01:44:53   getting on it's like worrying if they'll [TS]

01:44:54   discover french fries right it's like [TS]

01:44:56   you know the they will get on the air [TS]

01:44:57   desert-like don't we're not gonna give [TS]

01:44:59   our child deserves well good luck with [TS]

01:45:00   that like it that you know it's the [TS]

01:45:02   world is going to happen to them all you [TS]

01:45:04   can do and you get a specialist I say [TS]

01:45:06   start young like you get such a small [TS]

01:45:08   window of time to 34 years old to make [TS]

01:45:12   any sort of impression online and also [TS]

01:45:14   just blaming it from an adult [TS]

01:45:15   perspective showing them that I like [TS]

01:45:17   these movies i watch them without them [TS]

01:45:18   sometimes they come down when they can't [TS]

01:45:20   sleep in the same you're watching [TS]

01:45:21   miyazaki movie and I think that has an [TS]

01:45:22   effect they're saying these are just [TS]

01:45:23   kids movies that we watch these movies [TS]

01:45:25   and daddy watches to like they're good [TS]

01:45:27   for everybody [TS]

01:45:28   you get so few chances to do so do you [TS]

01:45:31   have a miyazaki movie on a loop and then [TS]

01:45:32   when an infrared beam is triggered game [TS]

01:45:34   of thrones flips over to the miyazaki [TS]

01:45:36   movies come down the stairs that are our [TS]

01:45:38   stairs are very creaky and i was able to [TS]

01:45:41   pause the night when we heard one kid [TS]

01:45:42   coming down it looks like John's playing [TS]

01:45:44   journey but he hits a button in and [TS]

01:45:46   Microsoft Excel comes up you know I mean [TS]

01:45:49   like I really running along but like [TS]

01:45:51   there's one like unfortunate side effect [TS]

01:45:54   of a good thing a good thing is [TS]

01:45:57   realizing that it matters what we showed [TS]

01:45:58   that show our kids like it's a good [TS]

01:46:00   thing i'm really glad that like you know [TS]

01:46:02   there was a there was a time when you [TS]

01:46:05   couldn't just have commercials disguises [TS]

01:46:07   TV shows like in the seventies that was [TS]

01:46:09   a thing for a while the eighties that [TS]

01:46:11   one away [TS]

01:46:11   I guess I guess I just feel like it's [TS]

01:46:13   adjusted to to amplify with John saying [TS]

01:46:16   that there's there's so many things you [TS]

01:46:20   could do like I've probably there's com [TS]

01:46:22   definitely comics I've read with my kids [TS]

01:46:24   comics ever with my kids this week that [TS]

01:46:26   she's probably too young to be reading [TS]

01:46:27   and I don't feel great about that but in [TS]

01:46:29   the case of this movie script what I say [TS]

01:46:31   that because I want her to be exposed to [TS]

01:46:33   stuff that's beyond the incredibly broad [TS]

01:46:37   darkly drawing outlines of what [TS]

01:46:40   constitutes children's entertainment [TS]

01:46:41   because it's really depressing if you if [TS]

01:46:44   you really look at the landscape that's [TS]

01:46:46   out there of what you're supposed to be [TS]

01:46:47   consuming when you know I mean like [TS]

01:46:49   clone wars clone wars i think is awesome [TS]

01:46:50   I like it better than three of the style [TS]

01:46:54   person because it's really good but it's [TS]

01:46:56   also it's it's it's really predictable [TS]

01:46:59   and I just think the idea of like [TS]

01:47:00   throwing stuff to your kid that is not [TS]

01:47:02   dangerous but there's not that much like [TS]

01:47:04   my smokes probably little much for a [TS]

01:47:07   young kid spirit whale a little much for [TS]

01:47:09   a young kid but I don't know I just feel [TS]

01:47:11   like giving your kids the chance to have [TS]

01:47:13   stuff we don't sit around read [TS]

01:47:15   fairytales so much as we did when I was [TS]

01:47:17   a kid so there's nothing if you're going [TS]

01:47:19   to be in this media landscape giving [TS]

01:47:20   them start putting stuff in their path [TS]

01:47:21   that they're going to think about and [TS]

01:47:23   maybe they'll have a question a year [TS]

01:47:24   from now that they don't have today but [TS]

01:47:26   adding the transition to parenting [TS]

01:47:27   lesson but i just think that's such a [TS]

01:47:29   great opportunity like John says you [TS]

01:47:30   don't have forever or even even live [TS]

01:47:32   action movies for adults get like that [TS]

01:47:35   for the actresses that are out there [TS]

01:47:37   what roles do they have for women [TS]

01:47:39   that I that they are the hero of the [TS]

01:47:42   story unequivocally but no no any sort [TS]

01:47:46   of qualifiers no restaurant I mean like [TS]

01:47:48   zero gravity wasn't hundred local things [TS]

01:47:49   happen to some Republican gravity and [TS]

01:47:52   she was kind of like more like an inner [TS]

01:47:53   struggle like nausea go straight up [TS]

01:47:55   she's the hero of the story and over in [TS]

01:47:57   it not in not in a you could substitute [TS]

01:47:59   a male character be the same story [TS]

01:48:01   because it wouldn't she's also she's a [TS]

01:48:02   female she acts like a female she's also [TS]

01:48:05   you know she has like it's I don't just [TS]

01:48:08   dont even cie I maybe I'm not thinking [TS]

01:48:10   well stop that someone knows it will [TS]

01:48:11   throw it out maybe like is there a [TS]

01:48:13   live-action movie that is a [TS]

01:48:14   straightforward action/adventure movie [TS]

01:48:16   with a female hero to agree that the [TS]

01:48:18   Nazca is and I don't even think there is [TS]

01:48:19   that hope so i got hopes for Lucy it's [TS]

01:48:21   not something she'll be watching anytime [TS]

01:48:23   soon but i gotta i don't know i think [TS]

01:48:24   she's got to go like it you know be the [TS]

01:48:26   killing machine and that one like there [TS]

01:48:28   are certain things that were allowed to [TS]

01:48:29   have and i would say that i would hold [TS]

01:48:31   nas ago and and Kiki for that matter is [TS]

01:48:33   to movies that could never fly as a [TS]

01:48:35   Hollywood live action movie classic is a [TS]

01:48:37   good action movie too though that's the [TS]

01:48:39   thing is like it isn't just that I think [TS]

01:48:40   a lot of people think Miyazaki's all [TS]

01:48:42   like giant avoid smiling faces and it's [TS]

01:48:45   it's not I mean he's only seen her on [TS]

01:48:48   key and you haven't seen mine okay and [TS]

01:48:50   and not-so-good you can be forgiven for [TS]

01:48:52   thinking that but you're missing a big [TS]

01:48:54   part of the picture there I just like [TS]

01:48:55   the fact that everything here isn't [TS]

01:48:56   handed to the kid that's watching on a [TS]

01:48:58   platter right i mean there's weirdness [TS]

01:49:00   there are there are themes that are [TS]

01:49:03   really subtle as far as you know growing [TS]

01:49:05   up and hand the whole puberty aspect of [TS]

01:49:08   it which they will be picked up on for [TS]

01:49:10   quite some time but there's there's a [TS]

01:49:12   lot of stuff that goes on that they [TS]

01:49:14   actually have to piece together [TS]

01:49:15   themselves to start just you know what [TS]

01:49:17   why did this person why did that go that [TS]

01:49:19   way why did that person to what they did [TS]

01:49:21   why would they motivated separate why or [TS]

01:49:23   why is she why is she I can tell like [TS]

01:49:25   kids can tell that she's upset or sad [TS]

01:49:26   but they will take a long time before [TS]

01:49:28   very why why is she upset because she [TS]

01:49:31   doesn't explain why her she's gone away [TS]

01:49:32   and eventually like that's the party [TS]

01:49:34   movies the kids won't get until they are [TS]

01:49:35   themselves 12 and go oh now I recognize [TS]

01:49:38   why she shuts down when the kids pull up [TS]

01:49:40   in the car right and that's too [TS]

01:49:42   sophisticated for this point I really [TS]

01:49:44   like watching this with the kids tonight [TS]

01:49:45   because even though they they would [TS]

01:49:47   laugh at the occasional you know funny [TS]

01:49:49   cat joke and wouldn't say much about [TS]

01:49:51   what's going on in the film [TS]

01:49:53   you can watch their faces and you can [TS]

01:49:55   kind of see the gears turning or once in [TS]

01:49:57   a while you'd see like a little subtle [TS]

01:49:58   smile appear on a face at an appropriate [TS]

01:50:00   point and it's just it's really fun to [TS]

01:50:02   kind of see the brain started to work [TS]

01:50:05   while they're watching a movie instead [TS]

01:50:06   of just you know things flowing by [TS]

01:50:08   adults should watch this movie because [TS]

01:50:09   it is i think many seems like it [TS]

01:50:11   sometimes you think your kids get more [TS]

01:50:13   than they do right it was a very often i [TS]

01:50:15   will add my kids hate this as all kids [TS]

01:50:17   should we'll ask them why did character [TS]

01:50:20   X what is characterized feeling now and [TS]

01:50:22   why I kind of hate you for asking it now [TS]

01:50:24   they absolutely they absolutely do not [TS]

01:50:26   know the answer sometimes they can tell [TS]

01:50:28   what the person is feeling of his [TS]

01:50:29   animation i can tell she's not happy or [TS]

01:50:31   sad or whatever but they have no idea [TS]

01:50:32   why and they're not going to such an [TS]

01:50:33   awful thing to do to your kids Jon [TS]

01:50:35   that's like saying show your work i [TS]

01:50:36   asked them gently and I don't lean on it [TS]

01:50:39   and yes and yes they do hate it and they [TS]

01:50:41   can either be something similar is what [TS]

01:50:43   it's all about things a young girl could [TS]

01:50:44   do in the city to earn over [TS]

01:50:45   no I don't know what I'm trying to do [TS]

01:50:48   what I'm trying to do is the kinds of [TS]

01:50:51   things we could do naked I'm I'm trying [TS]

01:50:53   to gauge whether they are actually [TS]

01:50:55   following along to the degree you hope [TS]

01:50:56   they aren't his thing is they don't they [TS]

01:50:57   don't understand like I mean many adults [TS]

01:51:00   don't understand why you ask it if you [TS]

01:51:02   like to try this with your adult friends [TS]

01:51:04   pause the movie and ask them you'll be [TS]

01:51:06   very depressed by those answers well [TS]

01:51:07   anyway which I know that John I mean the [TS]

01:51:10   one simple question to ask the end it [TS]

01:51:11   sounds silly but sometimes I yeah i'll [TS]

01:51:13   turn and see what you do that why did [TS]

01:51:14   you do that just know what you think he [TS]

01:51:16   did that he did that because he was mad [TS]

01:51:17   he did it because he was sad [TS]

01:51:19   well you know didn't turn out the way we [TS]

01:51:20   expected like it better than me [TS]

01:51:22   no but I think sometimes asking i have [TS]

01:51:25   the motivation thing that's what I love [TS]

01:51:26   and again any great story [TS]

01:51:28   I mean you know i'm always pulling up to [TS]

01:51:30   the high level but I got I'm always the [TS]

01:51:31   most fascinated by stories as [TS]

01:51:33   representing something that starts in a [TS]

01:51:35   certain state and eventually more or [TS]

01:51:36   less ends in another state and what we [TS]

01:51:38   learn about somebody who's faced with [TS]

01:51:40   something that seems impossible [TS]

01:51:42   that's what makes a great story so when [TS]

01:51:44   your face when were in life where face [TS]

01:51:45   it was something impossible like how do [TS]

01:51:47   we handle it like not great a lot of the [TS]

01:51:49   time and along the way you are your [TS]

01:51:51   integrity as a person is constantly [TS]

01:51:53   tested by all these opportunities to try [TS]

01:51:55   and handle this in a way that feels like [TS]

01:51:57   it's going to be less stressful or [TS]

01:51:58   whatever and I think someone's along the [TS]

01:52:00   way it's it's worth you know you don't [TS]

01:52:02   sit down and turn it into some kind of [TS]

01:52:03   afterschool special but you could you [TS]

01:52:05   could do it on there [TS]

01:52:06   equestria girls you can you just sit [TS]

01:52:08   there and go like you know why why is [TS]

01:52:10   this why is this person behaving in the [TS]

01:52:11   way that they are do you think anyway [TS]

01:52:13   and having bought a son and a daughter [TS]

01:52:15   when i asked the two questions of the [TS]

01:52:16   nine-year-old son and a seven-year-old [TS]

01:52:18   daughter it is shocking how much more [TS]

01:52:19   the seven-year-old daughter is able to [TS]

01:52:21   understand what's going on in the [TS]

01:52:23   emotional world of the characters on the [TS]

01:52:24   screen i mean i know that's a stereotype [TS]

01:52:25   but I've got the two kids and I guess [TS]

01:52:27   the two kids the questions and despite a [TS]

01:52:29   three-year age difference the [TS]

01:52:30   seven-year-old knows why that girl or [TS]

01:52:32   boys upset and the nine-year-old if he [TS]

01:52:35   knows he's not saying so that brings us [TS]

01:52:37   to the end of our show and i would like [TS]

01:52:38   to thank my lovely gasps for once again [TS]

01:52:41   spending some time talking about a [TS]

01:52:44   miyazaki movie with me Merlin man it was [TS]

01:52:46   great to have you back [TS]

01:52:48   thanks man it's a it's always a joy to [TS]

01:52:49   be here appreciate it I'm glad youwere [TS]

01:53:07   really enjoyed it you I didn't make you [TS]

01:53:17   i did i'd pick that's all right to [TS]

01:53:19   define time and I'd I feel like my my my [TS]

01:53:23   horizons have been expanded yet again [TS]

01:53:25   prognosis of miyazaki yeah [TS]

01:53:27   yep yep and John syracuse I would've [TS]

01:53:29   done without you thanks for being here [TS]

01:53:50   about my neighbor totoro so thanks [TS]
