00:04:47 ◼   ► be a mythology episode right because it [TS]

00:04:49 ◼   ► to a very discreet portion of the show [TS]

00:04:52 ◼   ► and in some ways it's amazing that this [TS]

00:04:54 ◼   ► works because it seems like a hard sell [TS]

00:04:57 ◼   ► right that you have staff to have seen [TS]

00:04:58 ◼   ► these you know basically these two [TS]

00:05:00 ◼   ► particular episodes of a seven-year-long [TS]

00:05:02 ◼   ► show in order to sort of get it and they [TS]

00:05:04 ◼   ► started you know they give you that [TS]

00:05:05 ◼   ► little flashback at the beginning and [TS]

00:05:07 ◼   ► you know it sprinkled throughout here [TS]

00:05:08 ◼   ► and there but you know you compare that [TS]

00:05:10 ◼   ► to something like insurrection or [TS]

00:05:11 ◼   ► nemesis or even generations in which all [TS]

00:05:14 ◼   ► you really have to know was like okay [TS]

00:05:15 ◼   ► captain kirk's a guy right like I think [TS]

00:05:17 ◼   ► that is I mean the closest the closest [TS]

00:05:20 ◼   ► parallel is really probably to wrath of [TS]

00:05:22 ◼   ► khan right which was also sort of a call [TS]

00:05:24 ◼   ► back to an episode of the show and to me [TS]

00:05:27 ◼   ► that it's impressive that they got a not [TS]

00:05:29 ◼   ► only is a mythology you know movie is it [TS]

00:05:32 ◼   ► made but it is unquestionably the most [TS]

00:05:35 ◼   ► successful and the best of these for [TS]

00:05:37 ◼   ► next generation will be so yeah it's one [TS]

00:05:39 ◼   ► of the things i love about this is the [TS]

00:05:41 ◼   ► economy with which it it starts the [TS]

00:05:43 ◼   ► story and then just motors through it [TS]

00:05:45 ◼   ► and the balance between those those [TS]

00:05:47 ◼   ► various threads your ear never sitting [TS]

00:05:51 ◼   ► there going what's going to happen next [TS]

00:05:53 ◼   ► when is the next scene [TS]

00:05:55 ◼   ► it just keeps moving and you know for [TS]

00:05:58 ◼   ► all the jokes about tvs Riker he does a [TS]

00:06:00 ◼   ► nice job driving that yes and keeping [TS]

00:06:03 ◼   ► all the balls in the air i just i [TS]

00:06:05 ◼   ► remember sitting in the theater going [TS]

00:06:07 ◼   ► this shouldn't be working like this this [TS]

00:06:09 ◼   ► is great because i was disappointed by [TS]

00:06:11 ◼   ► generations and so it was like wow they [TS]

00:06:14 ◼   ► got it right and they never got it right [TS]

00:06:16 ◼   ► again but oh I think something i would [TS]

00:06:20 ◼   ► say is you want to watch star trek [TS]

00:06:21 ◼   ► beyond um I hated that movie i'm sorry [TS]

00:06:24 ◼   ► i've seen it twice I've given it a fair [TS]

00:06:25 ◼   ► shot an action movie in space in what [TS]

00:06:28 ◼   ► really stands out to me when you go back [TS]

00:06:30 ◼   ► and watch first contact is i think most [TS]

00:06:33 ◼   ► people would agree it's one more action [TS]

00:06:35 ◼   ► e star trek movies with the next [TS]

00:06:37 ◼   ► generation cast but what makes it work [TS]

00:06:40 ◼   ► so much better than I think the the [TS]

00:06:43 ◼   ► reboot is managed to do is the Cuban [TS]

00:06:46 ◼   ► moments like the moment with lily and [TS]

00:06:48 ◼   ► card are really intense and really [TS]

00:06:51 ◼   ► awesome indie feel that like when you [TS]

00:06:53 ◼   ► know Picard chooses to kill instant [TS]

00:06:56 ◼   ► Lynch like you feel that I when the [TS]

00:06:58 ◼   ► turns to the board when Hawk turns into [TS]

00:07:00 ◼   ► a board like you feel that [TS]

00:07:02 ◼   ► and I just think there's a man acting [TS]

00:07:04 ◼   ► substance in this film that just doesn't [TS]

00:07:07 ◼   ► exist in the more recent Star Trek movie [TS]

00:07:09 ◼   ► yeah they're they're allowed to have [TS]

00:07:11 ◼   ► depth though and and they've earned that [TS]

00:07:13 ◼   ► depth whereas we're just told oh this is [TS]

00:07:16 ◼   ► kirk and spock and you know they're [TS]

00:07:18 ◼   ► great [TS]

00:07:18 ◼   ► well that's I mean once again the next [TS]

00:07:20 ◼   ► generation movies have seven years of [TS]

00:07:22 ◼   ► the next generation get build-up and the [TS]

00:07:24 ◼   ► characters whereas the reboots have the [TS]

00:07:26 ◼   ► movies that you've seen plus you know [TS]

00:07:28 ◼   ► you're here for your recollections of [TS]

00:07:30 ◼   ► previous actors doing different versions [TS]

00:07:32 ◼   ► of the same characters so it's in many [TS]

00:07:34 ◼   ► ways even more of a challenge to have [TS]

00:07:35 ◼   ► that right i mean with be with first [TS]

00:07:39 ◼   ► contact think you have a situation where [TS]

00:07:41 ◼   ► all of the the principals involved have [TS]

00:07:44 ◼   ► kind of Dave they know their characters [TS]

00:07:46 ◼   ► like the back of their hands at this [TS]

00:07:47 ◼   ► point they they know you know Patrick [TS]

00:07:51 ◼   ► Stewart knows who Picard is in the very [TS]

00:07:53 ◼   ► intimate way and when you add that to a [TS]

00:07:57 ◼   ► screenplay that really is designed to [TS]

00:07:59 ◼   ► cut up needle down to the courts of [TS]

00:08:01 ◼   ► these characters he do get something [TS]

00:08:04 ◼   ► that you know the best way I can [TS]

00:08:06 ◼   ► describe it as sort of like a a clean [TS]

00:08:08 ◼   ► palette cleanser right that like this is [TS]

00:08:11 ◼   ► these are this is a the same way that [TS]

00:08:15 ◼   ► wrath of khan got you the essence of the [TS]

00:08:17 ◼   ► original series characters is the [TS]

00:08:19 ◼   ► essence of all of these next-generation [TS]

00:08:22 ◼   ► characters and in the the subsequent [TS]

00:08:24 ◼   ► films i think lose quite a bit of this [TS]

00:08:26 ◼   ► and then attempt to kind of make them [TS]

00:08:28 ◼   ► more conventional but here here it is a [TS]

00:08:33 ◼   ► very much a parent I would also add as a [TS]

00:08:35 ◼   ► parenthetical that I really enjoy Star [TS]

00:08:37 ◼   ► Trek beyond we can have the camera i [TS]

00:08:40 ◼   ► really enjoyed it too but that's a whole [TS]

00:08:42 ◼   ► other move but oh well there's also a [TS]

00:08:46 ◼   ► surprising amount of had for lack of a [TS]

00:08:47 ◼   ► better term fanservice in this movie [TS]

00:08:49 ◼   ► which is that minor characters from the [TS]

00:08:51 ◼   ► show up here like Barkley appearing lady [TS]

00:08:54 ◼   ► now nurse Ogawa appears if it seem like [TS]

00:09:06 ◼   ► you can have the emergency medical [TS]

00:09:09 ◼   ► to avoid your movie yeah and nurse Ogawa [TS]

00:09:13 ◼   ► gets to you almost as much as dr. [TS]

00:09:21 ◼   ► earliest times i saw this i mean is [TS]

00:09:24 ◼   ► probably the third or fourth time I saw [TS]

00:09:25 ◼   ► I saw it with someone who had never seen [TS]

00:09:27 ◼   ► next generation but they were just [TS]

00:09:29 ◼   ► curious because they heard all about the [TS]

00:09:31 ◼   ► snow the board the board and so they [TS]

00:09:33 ◼   ► didn't have any of the best of both [TS]

00:09:35 ◼   ► worlds they didn't have any of the [TS]

00:09:36 ◼   ► knowledge of Picard's history with them [TS]

00:09:38 ◼   ► and they loved it and were able to [TS]

00:09:42 ◼   ► follow it from just from what was in the [TS]

00:09:44 ◼   ► movie and at the end asked me did they [TS]

00:09:47 ◼   ► actually do an episode about that said [TS]

00:09:49 ◼   ► oh oh you have no idea [TS]

00:09:51 ◼   ► yes they did many it's a remarkably [TS]

00:09:53 ◼   ► efficient screenplay and I say that when [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► we talk about Star Trek beyond what I [TS]

00:09:58 ◼   ► said about it was that it falls into the [TS]

00:10:00 ◼   ► trap of having only enough parts to do [TS]

00:10:02 ◼   ► what it needs to do and we again that's [TS]

00:10:04 ◼   ► a different podcasts that this is [TS]

00:10:05 ◼   ► efficient in a different way this is an [TS]

00:10:07 ◼   ► efficient in that while it's doing these [TS]

00:10:09 ◼   ► bits of fanservice it's doing them in [TS]

00:10:17 ◼   ► it's a good joke and everybody who seen [TS]

00:10:25 ◼   ► it's a perfect use of the character it [TS]

00:10:26 ◼   ► doesn't linger on it nurse Ogawa is [TS]

00:10:29 ◼   ► present and she does everything Barkley [TS]

00:10:30 ◼   ► is used in that one scene at a moment [TS]

00:10:34 ◼   ► that will get to in a little bit that is [TS]

00:10:36 ◼   ► very important when you're talking about [TS]

00:10:37 ◼   ► characters and about the journey that [TS]

00:10:40 ◼   ► Cromwell has to take is that from [TS]

00:10:41 ◼   ► Cochran and then that's it we know [TS]

00:10:43 ◼   ► that's all we needed him for but it's [TS]

00:10:45 ◼   ► kind of a pivotal scene and he's he's [TS]

00:10:47 ◼   ► the right character to use in that [TS]

00:10:49 ◼   ► situation and throughout this movie i [TS]

00:10:51 ◼   ► think i can point it [TS]

00:10:52 ◼   ► other examples of some restraint of like [TS]

00:10:55 ◼   ► they use they know where all the tools [TS]

00:10:56 ◼   ► are but they use them with restraint and [TS]

00:10:58 ◼   ► they get them to do exactly what they [TS]

00:10:59 ◼   ► need and then that's it and then that [TS]

00:11:01 ◼   ► they don't get over you they move on to [TS]

00:11:03 ◼   ► the next thing so card [TS]

00:11:32 ◼   ► what it is and that he has to move past [TS]

00:11:33 ◼   ► it because it does help him defeat the [TS]

00:11:35 ◼   ► board in the present day when they want [TS]

00:11:38 ◼   ► to like leave him on the outside but he [TS]

00:11:40 ◼   ► he has a vendetta against the Borg and [TS]

00:11:44 ◼   ► and we see that throughout his he's only [TS]

00:11:46 ◼   ► on earth for a short amount of time he [TS]

00:11:48 ◼   ► deems back to the ship and at that point [TS]

00:11:50 ◼   ► he's kind of an action hero but he is [TS]

00:11:52 ◼   ► not Captain Picard for a while because [TS]

00:11:55 ◼   ► he not only does he kill a instant Lynch [TS]

00:11:58 ◼   ► uh in in the holodeck and kind of silly [TS]

00:12:02 ◼   ► as appalled by that but he kills another [TS]

00:12:04 ◼   ► character very early on who's just been [TS]

00:12:06 ◼   ► assimilated by the Borg no attempt to [TS]

00:12:08 ◼   ► say that header me at all I mean he he [TS]

00:12:12 ◼   ► is from the get-go he basically says [TS]

00:12:14 ◼   ► just kill them you know they would thank [TS]

00:12:17 ◼   ► you i know i would so we get to see [TS]

00:12:19 ◼   ► Picard really kind of he's messed up [TS]

00:12:21 ◼   ► until he finally has that final scene [TS]

00:12:23 ◼   ► with alfre woodard where she kind of [TS]

00:12:26 ◼   ► makes him snap out of it i think it's [TS]

00:12:27 ◼   ► really need all the action and suspense [TS]

00:12:29 ◼   ► and and things that were used to in a in [TS]

00:12:31 ◼   ► a movie like this it's a really good [TS]

00:12:33 ◼   ► journey for patrick stewart to do more [TS]

00:12:36 ◼   ► than you know what we saw in best of [TS]

00:12:38 ◼   ► both worlds basically while it's nice [TS]

00:12:39 ◼   ► because so many of the episodes I mean [TS]

00:12:41 ◼   ► TNG was largely very episodic yea even [TS]

00:12:44 ◼   ► tho ye they didn't spend a ton of time [TS]

00:12:47 ◼   ► on Picard recovering from you know being [TS]

00:12:49 ◼   ► assimilated right like that doesn't [TS]

00:12:51 ◼   ► really come up [TS]

00:12:52 ◼   ► yeah like one episode yeah which is i [TS]

00:12:54 ◼   ► love that is but with traditionally like [TS]

00:12:56 ◼   ► you know everything resets at the end of [TS]

00:12:58 ◼   ► the episodes right most of the time [TS]

00:12:59 ◼   ► there is some white continuity from [TS]

00:13:01 ◼   ► episode to episode ensure if you look [TS]

00:13:03 ◼   ► over the course of seven seasons you see [TS]

00:13:05 ◼   ► these characters change in some ways but [TS]

00:13:07 ◼   ► a lot of it is you know reset at the end [TS]

00:13:09 ◼   ► of the episode like watching an old [TS]

00:13:10 ◼   ► lady's cartoon and so you know having a [TS]

00:13:13 ◼   ► chance to sort of delve into the [TS]

00:13:14 ◼   ► psychological thing that was an impact [TS]

00:13:16 ◼   ► of an earlier episode is what gives it [TS]

00:13:19 ◼   ► that richness that we don't really get [TS]

00:13:21 ◼   ► from a lot of the other ones i mean they [TS]

00:13:22 ◼   ► tried something like this insurrection [TS]

00:13:23 ◼   ► you know it has a sort of an idea and a [TS]

00:13:26 ◼   ► plot and you know there's there's a [TS]

00:13:28 ◼   ► message journals there but it's sort of [TS]

00:13:31 ◼   ► right it doesn't work it fails because [TS]

00:13:33 ◼   ► that's not really a [TS]

00:13:34 ◼   ► a question that we were interested in [TS]

00:13:36 ◼   ► seeing answered what I think really [TS]

00:13:38 ◼   ► shines about first contact is Picard and [TS]

00:13:42 ◼   ► I think it just shows how much more [TS]

00:13:45 ◼   ► talented actor he has been the shot the [TS]

00:13:48 ◼   ► shot has that one really good moment [TS]

00:13:50 ◼   ► when Spock ties but i think generally [TS]

00:13:52 ◼   ► speaking most people would agree it's [TS]

00:13:54 ◼   ► just no contest and like we're telling [TS]

00:13:57 ◼   ► jokes on this podcast about the line [TS]
