00:00:36   picked a movie to to talk about that is [TS]

00:00:39   one of my favorite Star Trek movies and [TS]

00:00:41   we had an episode about it yet so we're [TS]

00:01:44   with us [TS]

00:01:44   it's jamehl Bowie hello hello I don't [TS]

00:01:47   have a quotation from the movie but that [TS]

00:01:51   makes you better than all of us it's [TS]

00:01:52   about that Adam Adam Scott on the [TS]

00:01:55   defiant being like they're hailing us or [TS]

00:01:57   whatever it's taking a nice I relief [TS]

00:02:01   when his bosses they don't have to [TS]

00:02:02   commit suicide [TS]

00:02:04   yeah that's right well when wharf is [TS]

00:02:06   your captain you gotta wonder if it's a [TS]

00:02:08   good day to die [TS]

00:02:09   includes you right it's a hard posting [TS]

00:02:12   working for Worf guys alright so first [TS]

00:02:15   contact written by run more brand braga [TS]

00:02:18   from Star Trek writers on Star Trek next [TS]

00:02:21   generation in the following series [TS]

00:02:22   directed by Jonathan Frakes TVs [TS]

00:02:24   commander Riker himself and obviously [TS]

00:02:27   the next generation cast with a few [TS]

00:02:29   guest stars Alfre Woodard is Lily James [TS]

00:02:33   Cromwell is Ephraim Cochran a character [TS]

00:02:35   from the original series [TS]

00:02:36   Reese who in a weird episode of the [TS]

00:02:39   original series where he falls in love [TS]

00:02:41   with a cloud [TS]

00:02:42   anyway we've all been there Jason and [TS]

00:02:44   Alice Krieger is the board queen so [TS]

00:02:47   three great i think guest stars in this [TS]

00:02:50   one to get stories of a movie can have [TS]

00:02:52   guest stars but it's a based on the TV [TS]

00:02:54   show so i guess it can I thought maybe [TS]

00:02:56   we break the moving down to start into [TS]

00:02:59   the three different threads that that [TS]

00:03:03   this movie goes in because this movie [TS]

00:03:04   really does break into three plot [TS]

00:03:06   threads of it fairly quickly [TS]

00:03:08   the movie starts with a Borg attack well [TS]

00:03:10   I guess it really starts with Picard [TS]

00:03:11   dreaming about about dreaming about [TS]

00:03:14   being assimilated by the Borg and then [TS]

00:03:16   he wakes up but it's still a dream but [TS]

00:03:19   then he wakes up again and gets a called [TS]

00:03:20   the border attacking and and that that [TS]

00:03:24   sets Picard off on his journey because [TS]

00:03:26   they basically say no no don't come we [TS]

00:03:29   don't want you don't like we don't trust [TS]

00:03:31   you because you were compromised when [TS]

00:03:34   you were assimilated by the Borg but of [TS]

00:03:37   course Picard disregards orders he [TS]

00:03:39   rushes in he saves the day because his [TS]

00:03:41   knowledge of the board actually helps [TS]

00:03:43   them blow up the board ship but uh [TS]

00:03:45   little sphere emerges from the board [TS]

00:03:48   ship and goes back in time to assimilate [TS]

00:03:50   earth in the past and that's your that's [TS]

00:03:54   where the story begins to pick up war [TS]

00:03:55   from the damage defiant because [TS]

00:03:57   contractually war should be in the [TS]

00:03:59   movies but this on the Space nine so [TS]

00:04:01   they gotta work that out and so they're [TS]

00:04:04   like yeah but defined it'sit's good nice [TS]

00:04:06   little ship little-little and we're back [TS]

00:04:10   in the past and it's a it's a it's a [TS]

00:04:12   like a day before the first launch of [TS]

00:04:15   the reception Cochran's warp ship [TS]

00:04:17   meeting the aliens who are not [TS]

00:04:20   identified until the last scene for a [TS]

00:04:22   first contact contact experience and at [TS]

00:04:25   that point the the movie breaks into [TS]

00:04:27   three we have the card we have data [TS]

00:04:29   talking to the board queen and we've got [TS]

00:04:32   the stuff that happens on earth where is [TS]

00:04:34   that from Cochran is dealing with some [TS]

00:04:37   members of the crew and the weight of [TS]

00:04:39   history [TS]

00:04:40   the one thing that that's interesting [TS]

00:04:41   about this that sets it apart from [TS]

00:04:43   pretty much all the other [TS]

00:04:44   next-generation movies at least is if [TS]

00:04:46   this were an episode of the show would [TS]

00:04:47   be a mythology episode right because it [TS]

00:04:49   connects [TS]

00:04:49   to a very discreet portion of the show [TS]

00:04:52   and in some ways it's amazing that this [TS]

00:04:54   works because it seems like a hard sell [TS]

00:04:57   right that you have staff to have seen [TS]

00:04:58   these you know basically these two [TS]

00:05:00   particular episodes of a seven-year-long [TS]

00:05:02   show in order to sort of get it and they [TS]

00:05:04   started you know they give you that [TS]

00:05:05   little flashback at the beginning and [TS]

00:05:07   you know it sprinkled throughout here [TS]

00:05:08   and there but you know you compare that [TS]

00:05:10   to something like insurrection or [TS]

00:05:11   nemesis or even generations in which all [TS]

00:05:14   you really have to know was like okay [TS]

00:05:15   captain kirk's a guy right like I think [TS]

00:05:17   that is I mean the closest the closest [TS]

00:05:20   parallel is really probably to wrath of [TS]

00:05:22   khan right which was also sort of a call [TS]

00:05:24   back to an episode of the show and to me [TS]

00:05:27   that it's impressive that they got a not [TS]

00:05:29   only is a mythology you know movie is it [TS]

00:05:32   made but it is unquestionably the most [TS]

00:05:35   successful and the best of these for [TS]

00:05:37   next generation will be so yeah it's one [TS]

00:05:39   of the things i love about this is the [TS]

00:05:41   economy with which it it starts the [TS]

00:05:43   story and then just motors through it [TS]

00:05:45   and the balance between those those [TS]

00:05:47   various threads your ear never sitting [TS]

00:05:51   there going what's going to happen next [TS]

00:05:53   when is the next scene [TS]

00:05:55   it just keeps moving and you know for [TS]

00:05:58   all the jokes about tvs Riker he does a [TS]

00:06:00   nice job driving that yes and keeping [TS]

00:06:03   all the balls in the air i just i [TS]

00:06:05   remember sitting in the theater going [TS]

00:06:07   this shouldn't be working like this this [TS]

00:06:09   is great because i was disappointed by [TS]

00:06:11   generations and so it was like wow they [TS]

00:06:14   got it right and they never got it right [TS]

00:06:16   again but oh I think something i would [TS]

00:06:20   say is you want to watch star trek [TS]

00:06:21   beyond um I hated that movie i'm sorry [TS]

00:06:24   i've seen it twice I've given it a fair [TS]

00:06:25   shot an action movie in space in what [TS]

00:06:28   really stands out to me when you go back [TS]

00:06:30   and watch first contact is i think most [TS]

00:06:33   people would agree it's one more action [TS]

00:06:35   e star trek movies with the next [TS]

00:06:37   generation cast but what makes it work [TS]

00:06:40   so much better than I think the the [TS]

00:06:43   reboot is managed to do is the Cuban [TS]

00:06:46   moments like the moment with lily and [TS]

00:06:48   card are really intense and really [TS]

00:06:51   awesome indie feel that like when you [TS]

00:06:53   know Picard chooses to kill instant [TS]

00:06:56   Lynch like you feel that I when the [TS]

00:06:58   turns to the board when Hawk turns into [TS]

00:07:00   a board like you feel that [TS]

00:07:02   and I just think there's a man acting [TS]

00:07:04   substance in this film that just doesn't [TS]

00:07:07   exist in the more recent Star Trek movie [TS]

00:07:09   yeah they're they're allowed to have [TS]

00:07:11   depth though and and they've earned that [TS]

00:07:13   depth whereas we're just told oh this is [TS]

00:07:16   kirk and spock and you know they're [TS]

00:07:18   great [TS]

00:07:18   well that's I mean once again the next [TS]

00:07:20   generation movies have seven years of [TS]

00:07:22   the next generation get build-up and the [TS]

00:07:24   characters whereas the reboots have the [TS]

00:07:26   movies that you've seen plus you know [TS]

00:07:28   you're here for your recollections of [TS]

00:07:30   previous actors doing different versions [TS]

00:07:32   of the same characters so it's in many [TS]

00:07:34   ways even more of a challenge to have [TS]

00:07:35   that right i mean with be with first [TS]

00:07:39   contact think you have a situation where [TS]

00:07:41   all of the the principals involved have [TS]

00:07:44   kind of Dave they know their characters [TS]

00:07:46   like the back of their hands at this [TS]

00:07:47   point they they know you know Patrick [TS]

00:07:51   Stewart knows who Picard is in the very [TS]

00:07:53   intimate way and when you add that to a [TS]

00:07:57   screenplay that really is designed to [TS]

00:07:59   cut up needle down to the courts of [TS]

00:08:01   these characters he do get something [TS]

00:08:04   that you know the best way I can [TS]

00:08:06   describe it as sort of like a a clean [TS]

00:08:08   palette cleanser right that like this is [TS]

00:08:11   these are this is a the same way that [TS]

00:08:15   wrath of khan got you the essence of the [TS]

00:08:17   original series characters is the [TS]

00:08:19   essence of all of these next-generation [TS]

00:08:22   characters and in the the subsequent [TS]

00:08:24   films i think lose quite a bit of this [TS]

00:08:26   and then attempt to kind of make them [TS]

00:08:28   more conventional but here here it is a [TS]

00:08:33   very much a parent I would also add as a [TS]

00:08:35   parenthetical that I really enjoy Star [TS]

00:08:37   Trek beyond we can have the camera i [TS]

00:08:40   really enjoyed it too but that's a whole [TS]

00:08:42   other move but oh well there's also a [TS]

00:08:46   surprising amount of had for lack of a [TS]

00:08:47   better term fanservice in this movie [TS]

00:08:49   which is that minor characters from the [TS]

00:08:51   show up here like Barkley appearing lady [TS]

00:08:54   now nurse Ogawa appears if it seem like [TS]

00:08:57   very briefly I don't just like that you [TS]

00:08:59   know they make sure that almost all [TS]

00:09:01   those like little recurring characters [TS]

00:09:02   get a moment or something even if we [TS]

00:09:04   have new character certain as well as [TS]

00:09:06   you can have the emergency medical [TS]

00:09:08   hologram yes [TS]

00:09:09   to avoid your movie yeah and nurse Ogawa [TS]

00:09:13   gets to you almost as much as dr. [TS]

00:09:15   crusher gets to do in this movie [TS]

00:09:16   yeah that's true dr. crusher at least [TS]

00:09:18   try get to get drunk and and one of the [TS]

00:09:21   earliest times i saw this i mean is [TS]

00:09:24   probably the third or fourth time I saw [TS]

00:09:25   I saw it with someone who had never seen [TS]

00:09:27   next generation but they were just [TS]

00:09:29   curious because they heard all about the [TS]

00:09:31   snow the board the board and so they [TS]

00:09:33   didn't have any of the best of both [TS]

00:09:35   worlds they didn't have any of the [TS]

00:09:36   knowledge of Picard's history with them [TS]

00:09:38   and they loved it and were able to [TS]

00:09:42   follow it from just from what was in the [TS]

00:09:44   movie and at the end asked me did they [TS]

00:09:47   actually do an episode about that said [TS]

00:09:49   oh oh you have no idea [TS]

00:09:51   yes they did many it's a remarkably [TS]

00:09:53   efficient screenplay and I say that when [TS]

00:09:55   we talk about Star Trek beyond what I [TS]

00:09:58   said about it was that it falls into the [TS]

00:10:00   trap of having only enough parts to do [TS]

00:10:02   what it needs to do and we again that's [TS]

00:10:04   a different podcasts that this is [TS]

00:10:05   efficient in a different way this is an [TS]

00:10:07   efficient in that while it's doing these [TS]

00:10:09   bits of fanservice it's doing them in [TS]

00:10:11   ways where it's exactly what you need [TS]

00:10:14   and nothing more so like the emergency [TS]

00:10:15   medical hologram [TS]

00:10:17   it's a good joke and everybody who seen [TS]

00:10:19   voyagers like hey it's the EMH but it's [TS]

00:10:22   also just a good joke it's a delaying [TS]

00:10:24   tactic for crusher [TS]

00:10:25   it's a perfect use of the character it [TS]

00:10:26   doesn't linger on it nurse Ogawa is [TS]

00:10:29   present and she does everything Barkley [TS]

00:10:30   is used in that one scene at a moment [TS]

00:10:34   that will get to in a little bit that is [TS]

00:10:36   very important when you're talking about [TS]

00:10:37   characters and about the journey that [TS]

00:10:40   Cromwell has to take is that from [TS]

00:10:41   Cochran and then that's it we know [TS]

00:10:43   that's all we needed him for but it's [TS]

00:10:45   kind of a pivotal scene and he's he's [TS]

00:10:47   the right character to use in that [TS]

00:10:49   situation and throughout this movie i [TS]

00:10:51   think i can point it [TS]

00:10:52   other examples of some restraint of like [TS]

00:10:55   they use they know where all the tools [TS]

00:10:56   are but they use them with restraint and [TS]

00:10:58   they get them to do exactly what they [TS]

00:10:59   need and then that's it and then that [TS]

00:11:01   they don't get over you they move on to [TS]

00:11:03   the next thing so card [TS]

00:11:05   let's let's dive into Picard a little [TS]

00:11:06   bit more card you talk about the perils [TS]

00:11:09   will start to we have moby-dick we have [TS]

00:11:12   a character from an old star trek [TS]

00:11:14   episode in different Cochran or if you [TS]

00:11:16   want to go this way a direct sequel to [TS]

00:11:18   an old next generation episode in this [TS]

00:11:20   case yes to both [TS]

00:11:21   world there's so much rolled into that [TS]

00:11:23   and and this is a story about the card [TS]

00:11:26   having his baggage with the board and it [TS]

00:11:29   end almost coming to accept that it is [TS]

00:11:32   what it is and that he has to move past [TS]

00:11:33   it because it does help him defeat the [TS]

00:11:35   board in the present day when they want [TS]

00:11:38   to like leave him on the outside but he [TS]

00:11:40   he has a vendetta against the Borg and [TS]

00:11:44   and we see that throughout his he's only [TS]

00:11:46   on earth for a short amount of time he [TS]

00:11:48   deems back to the ship and at that point [TS]

00:11:50   he's kind of an action hero but he is [TS]

00:11:52   not Captain Picard for a while because [TS]

00:11:55   he not only does he kill a instant Lynch [TS]

00:11:58   uh in in the holodeck and kind of silly [TS]

00:12:02   as appalled by that but he kills another [TS]

00:12:04   character very early on who's just been [TS]

00:12:06   assimilated by the Borg no attempt to [TS]

00:12:08   say that header me at all I mean he he [TS]

00:12:12   is from the get-go he basically says [TS]

00:12:14   just kill them you know they would thank [TS]

00:12:17   you i know i would so we get to see [TS]

00:12:19   Picard really kind of he's messed up [TS]

00:12:21   until he finally has that final scene [TS]

00:12:23   with alfre woodard where she kind of [TS]

00:12:26   makes him snap out of it i think it's [TS]

00:12:27   really need all the action and suspense [TS]

00:12:29   and and things that were used to in a in [TS]

00:12:31   a movie like this it's a really good [TS]

00:12:33   journey for patrick stewart to do more [TS]

00:12:36   than you know what we saw in best of [TS]

00:12:38   both worlds basically while it's nice [TS]

00:12:39   because so many of the episodes I mean [TS]

00:12:41   TNG was largely very episodic yea even [TS]

00:12:44   tho ye they didn't spend a ton of time [TS]

00:12:47   on Picard recovering from you know being [TS]

00:12:49   assimilated right like that doesn't [TS]

00:12:51   really come up [TS]

00:12:52   yeah like one episode yeah which is i [TS]

00:12:54   love that is but with traditionally like [TS]

00:12:56   you know everything resets at the end of [TS]

00:12:58   the episodes right most of the time [TS]

00:12:59   there is some white continuity from [TS]

00:13:01   episode to episode ensure if you look [TS]

00:13:03   over the course of seven seasons you see [TS]

00:13:05   these characters change in some ways but [TS]

00:13:07   a lot of it is you know reset at the end [TS]

00:13:09   of the episode like watching an old [TS]

00:13:10   lady's cartoon and so you know having a [TS]

00:13:13   chance to sort of delve into the [TS]

00:13:14   psychological thing that was an impact [TS]

00:13:16   of an earlier episode is what gives it [TS]

00:13:19   that richness that we don't really get [TS]

00:13:21   from a lot of the other ones i mean they [TS]

00:13:22   tried something like this insurrection [TS]

00:13:23   you know it has a sort of an idea and a [TS]

00:13:26   plot and you know there's there's a [TS]

00:13:28   message journals there but it's sort of [TS]

00:13:31   right it doesn't work it fails because [TS]

00:13:33   that's not really a [TS]

00:13:34   a question that we were interested in [TS]

00:13:36   seeing answered what I think really [TS]

00:13:38   shines about first contact is Picard and [TS]

00:13:42   I think it just shows how much more [TS]

00:13:45   talented actor he has been the shot the [TS]

00:13:48   shot has that one really good moment [TS]

00:13:50   when Spock ties but i think generally [TS]

00:13:52   speaking most people would agree it's [TS]

00:13:54   just no contest and like we're telling [TS]

00:13:57   jokes on this podcast about the line [TS]

00:13:59   must be drawn here but like you can [TS]

00:14:01   watch that scene in I also the home of [TS]

00:14:04   drainage in anger and desperation in the [TS]

00:14:07   world just bubbling up in me and I've [TS]

00:14:09   seen it a thousand times and it is i [TS]

00:14:12   mean it's acting and playing off of Lily [TS]

00:14:14   like she's perfectly cast here because [TS]

00:14:16   she she stands up to him and like that's [TS]

00:14:19   not something we really see on [TS]

00:14:20   next-generation very much someone to can [TS]

00:14:22   go toe-to-toe with Picard and I think [TS]

00:14:24   it's you know it's not a mystery it's [TS]

00:14:26   just incredible acting and what what's [TS]

00:14:29   what's really amazing is you know [TS]

00:14:31   they've used movie dick as an analogy in [TS]

00:14:34   the past but it's con con is the one who [TS]

00:14:37   is the Ahab figure and rice time it's [TS]

00:14:41   the hero and and it's also not a good [TS]

00:14:44   thing right that's the thing that kind [TS]

00:14:45   of snaps out of it it's like oh and you [TS]

00:14:50   know what that is such that is that such [TS]

00:14:52   a brave thing to do with their hero and [TS]

00:14:54   but Stewart can handle it [TS]

00:14:56   obviously I will say though that in [TS]

00:14:59   short of going that route and I think [TS]

00:15:01   it's I've about i think it and thought [TS]

00:15:03   it was very smart choice to sort of make [TS]

00:15:05   Picard our a hab that I think that this [TS]

00:15:10   movie i cannot paves the way for the [TS]

00:15:15   explicitly action here any action hero [TS]

00:15:18   ii recorded me and the subsequent [TS]

00:15:20   next-generation missed you think of the [TS]

00:15:22   big misreading of a character I mean so [TS]

00:15:25   my least favorite part of first contact [TS]

00:15:26   is the holodeck seen part of this is [TS]

00:15:30   gonna ask oh hey Talladega to concede [TS]

00:15:32   that but sort of the Picard of [TS]

00:15:36   next-generation I don't think generally [TS]

00:15:39   would gun down you know someone with the [TS]

00:15:44   Tommy gun in the middle of a holodeck [TS]

00:15:46   just [TS]

00:15:47   doesn't really that's like a wharf thing [TS]

00:15:49   to do right thats really seem like a [TS]

00:15:51   record that we know and even in the [TS]

00:15:53   context of a story about his PTSD it [TS]

00:15:57   just doesn't really fit and I think I [TS]

00:16:00   think that's if there's like a flaw here [TS]

00:16:03   a fatal flaw but something that would I [TS]

00:16:05   think become a fatal form and emulator [TS]

00:16:07   movies it's that like I Picard it [TS]

00:16:12   becomes her Patrick Stewart plays Picard [TS]

00:16:15   as an almost arrow Flemish character and [TS]

00:16:18   a way that i'm not quite sure I really [TS]

00:16:22   fits they care for the that students [TS]

00:16:25   actually established going into first [TS]

00:16:27   contact [TS]

00:16:28   well here you would argue that he's that [TS]

00:16:29   he's kinda messed up and that's why he's [TS]

00:16:31   behaving this way the problem is if [TS]

00:16:32   somebody says oh that was cool let's [TS]

00:16:34   have him do that again in the next [TS]

00:16:35   couple of movies it's like no no youyou [TS]

00:16:38   that then you really misread this [TS]

00:16:39   character because he was doing that [TS]

00:16:41   because he was totally in a bad place [TS]

00:16:43   and needed to snap out of it [TS]

00:16:45   this is not normal Captain Picard [TS]

00:16:47   because he would never do that it's it's [TS]

00:16:49   also not a normal situation they're not [TS]

00:16:51   just trying to fight the board they're [TS]

00:16:52   trying to preserve the existence of the [TS]

00:16:55   Federation there's desperation there too [TS]

00:16:57   I mean part of that is it you know [TS]

00:16:58   Patrick Stewart had a read the original [TS]

00:17:01   well an earlier draft of this and had [TS]

00:17:04   decided that he wanted to be up on the [TS]

00:17:05   ship and be action here doing these [TS]

00:17:07   things and not down on the planet which [TS]

00:17:10   was the way it was originally written so [TS]

00:17:12   I think it's a very different movie [TS]

00:17:15   having him up there eight works for me [TS]

00:17:18   especially because he has lily as as [TS]

00:17:21   brianna the head said as a foil to work [TS]

00:17:25   off of and it also helps us is the [TS]

00:17:26   audience to understand his mind in a way [TS]

00:17:28   that any gin insurrection doesn't [TS]

00:17:31   accomplish and in a way that nothing in [TS]

00:17:34   nemesis accomplishes there's there's no [TS]

00:17:37   no the weather character to bounce off [TS]

00:17:39   of there really other than he has a [TS]

00:17:41   couple of the sides to Troy about you [TS]

00:17:43   know [TS]

00:17:44   oh he understands me or whatever for [TS]

00:17:46   chins up but that this this really I I [TS]

00:17:50   feel works quite well because she can [TS]

00:17:54   also extract all of the information from [TS]

00:17:57   card in a way that many of these other [TS]

00:18:00   doctors probably couldn't because you [TS]

00:18:02   know they the the next generation [TS]

00:18:03   characters weren't really supposed to [TS]

00:18:04   challenge one another like this so it it [TS]

00:18:08   works well to have her there to [TS]

00:18:10   challenge him off in that aspect in [TS]

00:18:12   something that we don't see you again [TS]

00:18:13   repeated in in the following films isn't [TS]

00:18:17   a great moment we're on the bridge [TS]

00:18:18   Picard basically insult he dresses down [TS]

00:18:20   Worf he basically says go sacrifice [TS]

00:18:22   yourself and and goes into random just [TS]

00:18:25   walks into the ready room and offer a [TS]

00:18:27   water just looks around and she's like [TS]

00:18:29   what the hell are you people doing and [TS]

00:18:32   they're like oh while he's the captain [TS]

00:18:33   we're going to follow his orders which [TS]

00:18:34   of course is admirable and it and it's I [TS]

00:18:36   think maybe a little too on the nose but [TS]

00:18:38   I like that she says to him like maybe [TS]

00:18:42   they never got stupid orders like this [TS]

00:18:45   before whatever she says like to say [TS]

00:18:46   that of course their loyalty is good [TS]

00:18:48   normally but you're behaving [TS]

00:18:50   irrationally but I just like that that [TS]

00:18:51   because she's not a member of the crew [TS]

00:18:53   in column on it and that that is and she [TS]

00:18:56   storms in there and then we get that [TS]

00:18:58   amazing scene where which i do i just [TS]

00:19:00   love dearly loved the whole thing things [TS]

00:19:02   I i think we quote that scene weekly and [TS]

00:19:05   if it's not a line must be drawn here [TS]

00:19:07   it's you broke your little ships right [TS]

00:19:09   that is it and just the way she under [TS]

00:19:12   cells that line two [TS]

00:19:14   she doesn't make a big deal out of it [TS]

00:19:15   just you know there's that pause and you [TS]

00:19:18   broke a little ships it's like that's [TS]

00:19:21   the coldest way to do that line [TS]

00:19:23   well I like the I mean in the it's shot [TS]

00:19:25   very well seen to it this whole movie is [TS]

00:19:27   shot very distinctly from the enterprise [TS]

00:19:29   that we've come to know and love right [TS]

00:19:31   on the series because it's the new [TS]

00:19:34   enterprise as we've as we've had [TS]

00:19:36   arguments in the in our back channel [TS]

00:19:38   slack for her few weeks about what [TS]

00:19:40   happened carrier Enterprise it so that's [TS]

00:19:42   great but you know it is it's a it's a [TS]

00:19:44   it's the most advanced ship in the fleet [TS]

00:19:46   it's clearly much more of a warship and [TS]

00:19:49   you know the whole thing is sort of [TS]

00:19:51   darkly lit and it's got all you know a [TS]

00:19:53   very different feel to it and so I i [TS]

00:19:56   think and there's a nice like several [TS]

00:19:57   zoom in on and he talks about we were [TS]

00:19:59   you know they they do this we fall back [TS]

00:20:02   they do this we retreat you know and [TS]

00:20:03   like I love that it's a great shot two [TS]

00:20:05   great delivery by stuart like that whole [TS]

00:20:07   thing is incredibly well put together I [TS]

00:20:10   and I think what's interesting about [TS]

00:20:12   this is that it [TS]

00:20:13   puts Starfleet on a much more military [TS]

00:20:17   footing you know it feels like I mean I [TS]

00:20:19   was thinking also just so it's almost a [TS]

00:20:21   throwaway line but yeah Lily calls him [TS]

00:20:24   addresses him as soldier at one point [TS]

00:20:26   and he doesn't argue with that or make [TS]

00:20:28   any comment about it right like even [TS]

00:20:30   though i think there are a lot of cases [TS]

00:20:31   where we'd have started characters like [TS]

00:20:33   we're not soldiers were really like [TS]

00:20:35   explorers and scientists now in this [TS]

00:20:36   from there pretty much soldiers it's [TS]

00:20:38   even more clever than that i think in [TS]

00:20:40   that there's a scene the scene where he [TS]

00:20:41   takes her to the Observation Lounge and [TS]

00:20:43   shows her earth and it's this beautiful [TS]

00:20:45   it's it's such a star trek seen it's [TS]

00:20:47   such a gene roddenberry scene where it's [TS]

00:20:49   like we don't even have any money in the [TS]

00:20:51   future we just work to better ourselves [TS]

00:20:52   the whole thing and then they go and [TS]

00:20:55   they emerged into the middle of the into [TS]

00:20:56   the bridge and the bat and the battle [TS]

00:20:58   planning is going on and you can see in [TS]

00:21:01   alfre woodard it's like oh so much for [TS]

00:21:05   idealism right like that that's the [TS]

00:21:07   moment where like the old the kind of [TS]

00:21:08   star trek ideals and falls away and [TS]

00:21:10   we're fighting and all the right [TS]

00:21:12   lighting is like red and everybody's got [TS]

00:21:13   big rifles and there's gonna be a fight [TS]

00:21:15   and it's a really like like she she gets [TS]

00:21:18   old star trek and then this is what she [TS]

00:21:20   actually get it turns into ds9 there [TS]

00:21:22   what people think so that the the big [TS]

00:21:24   action sequence and it is it is a it is [TS]

00:21:27   an action movie sequence right it's like [TS]

00:21:29   we need two three complete 3d Lee's that [TS]

00:21:31   need to be turned in order to do the [TS]

00:21:33   thing stops the bad guy [TS]

00:21:34   yeah you know it is that although [TS]

00:21:38   they're all I think there's a lot of [TS]

00:21:39   clever things about the fact that it's [TS]

00:21:40   on the underside of the saucer that we [TS]

00:21:42   get the kind of like funny where they're [TS]

00:21:44   upside down and then we get the shot [TS]

00:21:46   where we pan up and now we've oriented [TS]

00:21:47   right side up and there's some antigrav [TS]

00:21:49   stuff in it and there's some some [TS]

00:21:51   punching in spacesuits and Worf uses [TS]

00:21:54   aboard 2-2 tie office in a suit at one [TS]

00:21:57   point and i know it is i I really enjoy [TS]

00:22:02   that scene although i think it goes back [TS]

00:22:04   to what i was saying about future movies [TS]

00:22:06   that i enjoy that scene and yet I one of [TS]

00:22:09   the reasons i enjoy this because at this [TS]

00:22:10   point we didn't see the next generation [TS]

00:22:12   do action set pieces like this and now [TS]

00:22:15   like Star Trek movies have to be all [TS]

00:22:16   action set pieces like this so that part [TS]

00:22:19   of it i don't like but I do kind of [TS]

00:22:20   enjoy it as ridiculous it is that the [TS]

00:22:22   three maglock thing is that they have to [TS]

00:22:23   turn [TS]

00:22:24   hard part of that is also the the sort [TS]

00:22:26   of like horror aspect the thriller [TS]

00:22:28   aspect of it but make sure that makes it [TS]

00:22:30   slightly different than some of the [TS]

00:22:31   other action set-pieces we're going up [TS]

00:22:34   against other kinds of villains in this [TS]

00:22:36   particular case you know it's more like [TS]

00:22:39   fighting zombies you know they're kind [TS]

00:22:41   of ignoring you milling around doing [TS]

00:22:43   your thing and it's like oh now you draw [TS]

00:22:44   their attention not so it can it makes [TS]

00:22:48   the action scenes play out differently [TS]

00:22:49   than if there were Romulans doing [TS]

00:22:52   something on the deflector dish or [TS]

00:22:53   Riemann's doing something on the [TS]

00:22:55   deflector dish they keep looking up [TS]

00:22:56   right when they when they do things with [TS]

00:22:58   the computer to keep looking up and you [TS]

00:23:00   remember that moment like oh oh jeez but [TS]

00:23:02   it doesn't it's not like if it was a [TS]

00:23:04   Romulan or something where they would [TS]

00:23:05   immediately be like calling in people to [TS]

00:23:08   go attack them instead your current kind [TS]

00:23:09   of waiting for women they gonna come and [TS]

00:23:11   when are they going to attack but the [TS]

00:23:13   people who are doing [TS]

00:23:14   yeah I want to actually get double [TS]

00:23:16   double dominant because it is now I [TS]

00:23:18   recently I think every watch this maybe [TS]

00:23:21   a week and a half ago i've been on the [TS]

00:23:23   star trek kick we're watching all these [TS]

00:23:24   movies and I think it was a week after [TS]

00:23:27   their reward first time tag and it [TS]

00:23:29   really did strike me how much especially [TS]

00:23:34   in the earlier scenes with the [TS]

00:23:35   enterprise is being assimilated and crew [TS]

00:23:38   members are being assimilated and there [TS]

00:23:40   are shots of crew members and having [TS]

00:23:42   their limbs replace how much it is shot [TS]

00:23:44   like a body horror film [TS]

00:23:46   yeah and how much you know caution [TS]

00:23:50   tight tight spaces low lighting costs [TS]

00:23:53   phobia there's the scene where data is a [TS]

00:23:56   is grab from beneath and dried under [TS]

00:23:58   manager here did a straight-up horror [TS]

00:24:02   movie scenes a green and Jeffrey's to [TS]

00:24:04   really early on right oh yeah the first [TS]

00:24:07   two simulations we don't even see I [TS]

00:24:09   first much as first contact is a more [TS]

00:24:12   action e-track movie i do think that the [TS]

00:24:16   fact that so much of the action [TS]

00:24:18   throughout be the film is in this horror [TS]

00:24:23   style does make it seem under this makes [TS]

00:24:27   it seem less action it makes it seem [TS]

00:24:28   less true it's not it's not kinetic in a [TS]

00:24:31   way that sealing the the reboots are and [TS]

00:24:34   that [TS]

00:24:35   that makes a real difference in just the [TS]

00:24:37   general feel of it I i really really [TS]

00:24:39   agree with that in one of the the core [TS]

00:24:42   consists of a horror movie is you know [TS]

00:24:44   heart is generally a lower budget genre [TS]

00:24:47   right so you not to blast star trek [TS]

00:24:51   beyond similar but you know the scene [TS]

00:24:52   where you know the the enterprise tips [TS]

00:24:54   up and they're the others flying [TS]

00:24:56   downhill or even you know the rescue [TS]

00:24:59   seem like it's just an action movie like [TS]

00:25:01   someone got carpal tunnel CGI and all [TS]

00:25:03   the motor bikes around its not [TS]

00:25:05   impressive anymore i think what makes [TS]

00:25:08   this movie work and part of it is [TS]

00:25:10   because it did come in an age before cg [TS]

00:25:13   hit really just freed us or trapped us [TS]

00:25:16   to like depending on how you see it but [TS]

00:25:18   it's it's shot like that scene is kind [TS]

00:25:22   of low budget like they're moving in [TS]

00:25:24   slow motion on a soundstage you know [TS]

00:25:27   it's lit very carefully and it's [TS]

00:25:29   actually very minimal set for something [TS]

00:25:31   you're describing as a as a whole you [TS]

00:25:33   know an action scene and I firmly [TS]

00:25:36   believe it's a creative person that [TS]

00:25:38   constraints can actually make your work [TS]

00:25:41   better and i think they served them in [TS]

00:25:43   the same absolutely let's pick up the [TS]

00:25:46   thread about the board and i want to [TS]

00:25:47   move kind of tour data and the board [TS]

00:25:49   queen but it goes with the the idea of [TS]

00:25:51   the horror movie David does get dragged [TS]

00:25:53   into that door and then we get a series [TS]

00:25:55   of scenes with the board queen i think [TS]

00:25:58   more broadly to the Borg as a villain [TS]

00:26:01   going back to start to iive um I'm gonna [TS]

00:26:05   I'm gonna say later on that their scenes [TS]

00:26:08   with data for Queen that actually remind [TS]

00:26:09   me of goldfinger their strength but he's [TS]

00:26:12   tied down and they're having like [TS]

00:26:14   repartee it actually does remind me of [TS]

00:26:16   that but do you expect me to talk no [TS]

00:26:18   expect you to die i expect you to [TS]

00:26:20   assimilate but the but the thing about [TS]

00:26:24   about structure to is it has khan and he [TS]

00:26:26   is this oversized character who is going [TS]

00:26:29   to be the opposition and and we're gonna [TS]

00:26:31   have a madman that the the crew has to [TS]

00:26:33   defeat the problem that great movie one [TS]

00:26:35   of my favorite movies of all time but [TS]

00:26:36   problem is that it seems like now every [TS]

00:26:38   search movie has one of those characters [TS]

00:26:39   and this movie reminded me again the [TS]

00:26:42   board are yes there's a face to the [TS]

00:26:44   board in the board queen but they're a [TS]

00:26:45   force of nature they are kinda like [TS]

00:26:47   zombies [TS]

00:26:48   it is more like a horror movie [TS]

00:26:49   and I really like that I really liked [TS]

00:26:51   that that what's happening on the on the [TS]

00:26:53   enterprise's an infestation [TS]

00:26:55   it's not a madman's masterplan blah it's [TS]

00:27:00   it's it's something much more scary and [TS]

00:27:03   insidious and it's taking over [TS]

00:27:04   crewmembers I I like all of that and [TS]

00:27:08   it's not the master plan they weren't [TS]

00:27:10   expecting the enterprise to follow them [TS]

00:27:12   this is totally improv it's like as long [TS]

00:27:14   as we're here they are a force of nature [TS]

00:27:16   but they also are thinking and have a [TS]

00:27:19   plan their you know they have a [TS]

00:27:20   collection they stopped assimilating at [TS]

00:27:22   a certain deck because that's all they [TS]

00:27:23   need at that point right get what they [TS]

00:27:25   need so that makes them even scarier if [TS]

00:27:27   they were just you know mindlessly [TS]

00:27:29   assimilating I don't they keep coming [TS]

00:27:31   exactly like i felt dumb for not [TS]

00:27:32   realizing you even though I've seen this [TS]

00:27:34   movie several times including in the [TS]

00:27:35   theaters i felt dumb for never really [TS]

00:27:37   drawing that zombie parallel and I guess [TS]

00:27:39   maybe that's because at the time it felt [TS]

00:27:40   like zombies were not as big thing is [TS]

00:27:42   they are now you know that would be a [TS]

00:27:44   constant like walking dead and [TS]

00:27:46   everything like that but the it really [TS]

00:27:48   is such a great line of course they call [TS]

00:27:49   it out by guy she he describes them as [TS]

00:27:51   cyborg zombies to Lily at one point but [TS]

00:27:55   it is really good like the assimilation [TS]

00:27:57   rights writedowns like don't let them [TS]

00:27:58   touch you don't let them bite you right [TS]

00:27:59   like you'll be infected [TS]

00:28:01   you know in that aspect of it in [TS]

00:28:03   mirroring the horror movie part of it i [TS]

00:28:04   think is is very very clever and very [TS]

00:28:07   savvy and they take a lot of cues from [TS]

00:28:08   that genre and they they really they [TS]

00:28:11   assimilated a genre pretty well in [TS]

00:28:13   cinema say one thing i like about the [TS]

00:28:15   board as villains that's an interesting [TS]

00:28:18   twist i think on some of the core [TS]

00:28:21   premises of star track which is that you [TS]

00:28:23   know it's a serious devoted to the [TS]

00:28:26   exploration the idea that we can meet [TS]

00:28:29   the alien species other intelligent [TS]

00:28:32   beings and work with them and cooperate [TS]

00:28:35   with them and the board should have [TS]

00:28:36   raised the question what if you [TS]

00:28:38   encounter something that is profoundly [TS]

00:28:40   alien right that isn't that that that [TS]

00:28:43   does not into come close to perceiving [TS]

00:28:46   the world anyway like you do that has [TS]

00:28:48   its own own sort of like actually the [TS]

00:28:52   world like [TS]

00:28:53   ideology that is / it almost profoundly [TS]

00:28:57   auntie life does not fit what do you do [TS]

00:29:01   with something like that that does not [TS]

00:29:02   fit with your sense of what what ought [TS]

00:29:06   to be and I I just like I like how that [TS]

00:29:11   how that profound alien this access road [TS]

00:29:16   like a challenge to shred of inmates [TS]

00:29:19   this is one of the threads of the movie [TS]

00:29:21   like it's not just Picard's PTSD here [TS]

00:29:23   but in a real way the board acted sort [TS]

00:29:28   of like a you know you think you could [TS]

00:29:30   have this Federation but here's [TS]

00:29:32   something that just will not fit well I [TS]

00:29:34   mean it's me it's multiculturalism [TS]

00:29:35   versus a simulation if you want to boil [TS]

00:29:37   it down right because these are both the [TS]

00:29:39   Federation is all about finding new [TS]

00:29:40   worlds and new people and bringing them [TS]

00:29:42   into their happy kind of community and [TS]

00:29:45   the border about finding new worlds and [TS]

00:29:46   finding new people and taking what they [TS]

00:29:48   want from them and incorporating it into [TS]

00:29:50   a single assimilated hole which is not [TS]

00:29:53   to go too far down this path but I mean [TS]

00:29:54   in some ways they're diabetic coma [TS]

00:29:57   diametrically opposed in some ways [TS]

00:29:58   they're kind of similar and that that's [TS]

00:30:00   kind of interesting to like I love that [TS]

00:30:03   the board queen who is the [TS]

00:30:04   representation [TS]

00:30:05   I think it's a very smart decision by [TS]

00:30:06   the screenplay by the way to have a [TS]

00:30:08   character who is a representation of the [TS]

00:30:10   board collective because otherwise [TS]

00:30:12   they're kind of totally faceless but she [TS]

00:30:14   makes this argument right like what do [TS]

00:30:16   you mean data we we go find the best [TS]

00:30:18   stuff and we're we're trying to achieve [TS]

00:30:20   perfection by picking the best of [TS]

00:30:22   everybody and creating me one perfect [TS]

00:30:24   life-form in the galaxy there's a way [TS]

00:30:27   there's not way and what's this [TS]

00:30:29   the Borg Queen and that concede is in [TS]

00:30:31   dialogue with Star Trek six instead of [TS]

00:30:36   the the conversation early on in that [TS]

00:30:39   movie among the Klingons about the [TS]

00:30:41   Federation as this as this project that [TS]

00:30:45   will wipe away click on cultural [TS]

00:30:47   distinctives the Klingons will lose some [TS]

00:30:50   essence of who they are in joining up or [TS]

00:30:53   even even beginning the process of [TS]

00:30:55   joining up with the Federation I don't [TS]

00:30:57   know how intentional that isn't given [TS]

00:30:59   the run more was co-writer I'm if I have [TS]

00:31:02   a feeling that it probably was a little [TS]

00:31:03   intentional but there is definitely [TS]

00:31:06   some dialogue in those ideas explains a [TS]

00:31:09   lot about collects it by the way if you [TS]

00:31:15   look closely at some of the Borg in the [TS]

00:31:18   background throughout this film you know [TS]

00:31:21   they had they had way more budget and [TS]

00:31:23   way more time to do the makeup so [TS]

00:31:25   instead of just being a bunch of [TS]

00:31:26   humanoid-looking boring if you look [TS]

00:31:29   closely there are Klingon border and in [TS]

00:31:31   romulus and Vulcans and Bolians and you [TS]

00:31:34   know they they took the time to rethink [TS]

00:31:37   how they looked and make all those [TS]

00:31:40   different aliens into board to which you [TS]

00:31:43   know very subtle thing and it was quite [TS]

00:31:45   the boon for the Borg expansion set of [TS]

00:31:48   the star trek customizable car get haha [TS]

00:31:51   just oh just just head out nervous all [TS]

00:31:55   so John Syracuse and I every now and [TS]

00:31:57   then talk about what if things are [TS]

00:31:58   robots are not at one point he and i had [TS]

00:32:01   a baby a wacky conversation where we [TS]

00:32:02   were talking about if you took a robot [TS]

00:32:04   and added organic things would it would [TS]

00:32:07   it become to become a cyborg from the [TS]

00:32:09   other direction which is kind of what [TS]

00:32:10   the board Queens trying to do to data [TS]

00:32:12   here but I think that's fascinating that [TS]

00:32:14   the Borg so many stories i think we see [TS]

00:32:17   in Star Trek and another science fiction [TS]

00:32:19   are about computer intelligences machine [TS]

00:32:22   intelligence features and things like [TS]

00:32:24   that are saying we're going to perfect [TS]

00:32:25   everything by being logical and and [TS]

00:32:28   making everything into a computer and [TS]

00:32:31   the board isn't like that it's actually [TS]

00:32:32   one of the things that I find [TS]

00:32:33   fascinating about the board is the Board [TS]

00:32:35   believes that the ultimate perfection in [TS]

00:32:37   life is a synthesis of organic life and [TS]

00:32:41   machinery and so data is intriguing to [TS]

00:32:44   them but also still kind of offensive to [TS]

00:32:47   them because data is just a machine data [TS]

00:32:49   is a failure [TS]

00:32:51   Amanda would say this to write data [TS]

00:32:52   wants to be more human and and the [TS]

00:32:54   board's perspective is yeah you do need [TS]

00:32:57   to be more human because machines are [TS]

00:32:58   just as bad as pure organics as as we [TS]

00:33:01   were watching earlier the kids both went [TS]

00:33:03   wee wee don't want to know where they [TS]

00:33:05   got the skin for day and said no you [TS]

00:33:08   really that bored always have a lot of [TS]

00:33:10   skin that implies that they grew it or [TS]

00:33:12   something like that but yeah we don't we [TS]

00:33:13   don't [TS]

00:33:14   wanna know where the things that makes [TS]

00:33:16   the board so effective is that they take [TS]

00:33:20   familiar things and they make them [TS]

00:33:22   unfamiliar right so there are simulating [TS]

00:33:23   the enterprise and they have that [TS]

00:33:25   there's a great scene where they go from [TS]

00:33:26   the normal corridor you know in the [TS]

00:33:28   early in the movie when they're figure [TS]

00:33:30   out the border on the enterprise and [TS]

00:33:31   they're walking down a corridor and then [TS]

00:33:33   suddenly you know they turn a corner and [TS]

00:33:36   it's the same corridor except its border [TS]

00:33:38   five and so now suddenly it's an alien [TS]

00:33:41   space but yet there's an underlying [TS]

00:33:43   familiarity of it so that makes it [TS]

00:33:44   creepy and then of course they [TS]

00:33:46   assimilate people you know and change [TS]

00:33:48   the way they look datas look changes [TS]

00:33:50   because the graft all the skin on to him [TS]

00:33:53   that shot where they show that the earth [TS]

00:33:56   has been assimilated it's a very [TS]

00:33:57   familiar shot of the earth but it's [TS]

00:33:59   slightly different so it's very very [TS]

00:34:00   effective [TS]

00:34:01   it's like a literal nightmare you know [TS]

00:34:03   when you have those dreams where it's [TS]

00:34:04   like I was in my house but it's not my [TS]

00:34:05   house and someone was there but they [TS]

00:34:07   weren't that person and that's exactly [TS]

00:34:09   that zombies and body horror and I mean [TS]

00:34:11   it's all kind of wrapped together I [TS]

00:34:12   think any other thoughts about that but [TS]

00:34:14   the board the board queen i really like [TS]

00:34:16   Alice creek here i love the shot where [TS]

00:34:18   she comes down from the rafters and it's [TS]

00:34:19   just because everyone because that that [TS]

00:34:22   says it all right that says this is not [TS]

00:34:23   a person right this is not a human [TS]

00:34:25   person anyway this is something very [TS]

00:34:27   different and and it's just it's just a [TS]

00:34:30   great moment i love it as you and she [TS]

00:34:32   gets in her little outfit and then just [TS]

00:34:34   starts to walk it's like why even now I [TS]

00:34:36   like that i love that shot and I like [TS]

00:34:38   really like this character too and I [TS]

00:34:39   agree I my question i guess for the [TS]

00:34:41   rescue I'm kind of curious like coming [TS]

00:34:42   into this from you know your experiences [TS]

00:34:45   with the Borg in the series to this [TS]

00:34:48   seemed like does it seem really on board [TS]

00:34:50   like I mean they they have a data gets a [TS]

00:34:52   nice shot off he's like oh you can't be [TS]

00:34:54   an individual because that's not what [TS]

00:34:55   the Borg are and she's like well you [TS]

00:34:57   know sort of its but it's a weird it's [TS]

00:35:00   not something we've really seen that [TS]

00:35:02   much of from the board we do have like [TS]

00:35:03   Hugh early on and stuff like that right [TS]

00:35:05   where we have semi individuals of course [TS]

00:35:08   later we have seven of nine on Voyager [TS]

00:35:10   but it seems it's an interesting choice [TS]

00:35:13   because it does put a face on what's [TS]

00:35:15   otherwise this gigantic monolithic bad [TS]

00:35:18   guy and I was curious to know if you [TS]

00:35:20   guys felt like that was a that was an [TS]

00:35:21   odd choice or no I think it's a really [TS]

00:35:23   good choice especially going forward on [TS]

00:35:25   Voyager like a lot of the [TS]

00:35:27   best episodes of season 6 and 7 or all [TS]

00:35:30   about the board queen and you know Jason [TS]

00:35:32   you're talking about liking the shot [TS]

00:35:33   where she comes down like they you can [TS]

00:35:37   see the the special version of it like [TS]

00:35:40   with the special effects shots were [TS]

00:35:41   there they have on a crane they're [TS]

00:35:43   lowering her down [TS]

00:35:45   Voyager had a shot that I think even it [TS]

00:35:49   surpasses that is her entire body being [TS]

00:35:52   put together from scratch it's really [TS]

00:35:54   really awesome probably the the best [TS]

00:35:56   technical moment of Voyager special [TS]

00:35:58   effects so I think I i really like it [TS]

00:36:01   because I think she does kind of thumb [TS]

00:36:03   is she gives you no conflict in science [TS]

00:36:08   fiction like it's it's basically about [TS]

00:36:10   mirroring human emotion right so i think [TS]

00:36:13   when it's more amorphous I think it's [TS]

00:36:15   really hard to get at the heart of that [TS]

00:36:17   that said I think that the biggest flaw [TS]

00:36:19   at least to me in first contact is you [TS]

00:36:23   know the data board Queen subplot i [TS]

00:36:26   think it is a little bit mod1 I think [TS]

00:36:29   Star Trek tends to go down the road of [TS]

00:36:31   someone that wants to be human just [TS]

00:36:33   about two or three times too many and [TS]

00:36:36   it's just down it didn't really land for [TS]

00:36:38   me and I think it's because you have [TS]

00:36:40   brent Spiner is acting just can't [TS]

00:36:42   compete with other people in the movie [TS]

00:36:44   to be honest I disagree on a bunch of [TS]

00:36:47   different levels but uh because the the [TS]

00:36:51   another way you're saying you're talking [TS]

00:36:52   about [TS]

00:36:53   I don't feel like it holds up as well as [TS]

00:36:55   the shot in first contact because this [TS]

00:36:58   is mostly photographic with like [TS]

00:37:00   paintwork and like I don't know elastic [TS]

00:37:01   reality or wear these for the morphing [TS]

00:37:03   that pulls off this effect is not as [TS]

00:37:06   complex or as intricate conceptually but [TS]

00:37:09   I feel like wind up looking better over [TS]

00:37:12   the years because the other one was just [TS]

00:37:14   kind of a little shiny if you go back in [TS]

00:37:16   and when watching this this works out [TS]

00:37:19   well for me and I i do like Prince [TS]

00:37:22   acting off of her there couple scenes [TS]

00:37:25   where he's he's hitting it a little hard [TS]

00:37:26   but it's it's AIT's it's nice to have [TS]

00:37:30   this sort of unusual seduction compared [TS]

00:37:35   to I feel like some of the more typical [TS]

00:37:37   star trek romances that [TS]

00:37:39   we see play out because this is very [TS]

00:37:41   alien on many levels to to watch these [TS]

00:37:45   these to interact as opposed to you know [TS]

00:37:49   some of the more traditional things of [TS]

00:37:50   of different characters trying to appeal [TS]

00:37:52   to one another in order to accomplish [TS]

00:37:54   their goals and that you know what might [TS]

00:37:55   be a different alien race or something [TS]

00:37:57   but mainly comes out like pointed ears [TS]

00:37:58   and and this is it is something other [TS]

00:38:02   entirely there are moments where I think [TS]

00:38:04   especially towards the end where brent [TS]

00:38:05   Spiner doesn't do as good a job but i [TS]

00:38:07   think the the when they're doing their [TS]

00:38:08   Goldfinger kind of number there and he [TS]

00:38:10   keeps saying things like like that seems [TS]

00:38:13   that's an interesting story but i don't [TS]

00:38:15   think i believe it's friday he's very [TS]

00:38:17   skeptical i really like all of that [TS]

00:38:19   later later it's maybe not as strong but [TS]

00:38:22   I i do like that because of the [TS]

00:38:23   temptations of the flesh that she's [TS]

00:38:25   offering to data I feel like that that's [TS]

00:38:27   just like laying it out there as plain [TS]

00:38:29   as day of like organic life is something [TS]

00:38:32   that we can provide to you you can be [TS]

00:38:34   more than you are and that's what he's [TS]

00:38:35   told us for seven seasons that he always [TS]

00:38:38   wanted and and it also sets up the [TS]

00:38:40   question of like is going to be tempted [TS]

00:38:41   which we find out later he was tempted [TS]

00:38:43   for six tenths of a second which is an [TS]

00:38:44   eternity for Androids [TS]

00:38:46   I i do ultimately I i really like those [TS]

00:38:50   scenes although i think that maybe [TS]

00:38:51   they're they're not toward the end [TS]

00:38:53   they're not quite as well put together [TS]

00:38:54   but I i remember watching it with my [TS]

00:38:56   father and his immediate reaction to the [TS]

00:38:58   board Queen was oh no no there are no [TS]

00:39:01   individuals no no and I thought well [TS]

00:39:05   alright that's no that makes sense but [TS]

00:39:07   the more I thought about it night and [TS]

00:39:09   got him to watch it again [TS]

00:39:11   what's the one thing we know about the [TS]

00:39:12   board they adapt what do they do in when [TS]

00:39:15   they're firing their weapons they adapt [TS]

00:39:17   to you know they had their shields they [TS]

00:39:19   have to keep shifting frequencies they [TS]

00:39:21   do all these things [TS]

00:39:21   this is just an adaptation this is what [TS]

00:39:23   they have to do to conquer earth and to [TS]

00:39:26   conquer humanity and I thought that was [TS]

00:39:28   you know it's not obvious they don't [TS]

00:39:30   they don't like hold up a sign and go [TS]

00:39:32   see here's what we're doing but I [TS]

00:39:34   thought that worked really well and then [TS]

00:39:36   I liked where it developed into Voyager [TS]

00:39:37   she's not over explained here either [TS]

00:39:40   right [TS]

00:39:40   basically I I like that she's like well [TS]

00:39:43   you know the words are individuals and [TS]

00:39:44   she's like it's complicated you don't [TS]

00:39:46   understand how complicated we are and I [TS]

00:39:48   like [TS]

00:39:49   like humans you don't get you you think [TS]

00:39:51   you know the Borg but we are way more [TS]

00:39:53   complex than that and then they don't go [TS]

00:39:54   into it i like it because it's like yeah [TS]

00:39:56   okay i could buy that and we've already [TS]

00:39:57   seen the cutest right we gave we took a [TS]

00:40:00   person gave them a name while they were [TS]

00:40:01   assimilated it's like okay [TS]

00:40:03   the board will do what they want to do [TS]

00:40:04   and if they are a hivemind sort of [TS]

00:40:06   having a queen bee makes sense so and [TS]

00:40:10   and you know and what we get then is a [TS]

00:40:12   spokesperson for the board which is [TS]

00:40:13   really what we need in order for the [TS]

00:40:15   board to be a little more than a [TS]

00:40:17   faceless automatons which is what they [TS]

00:40:20   were kind of next-generation I like that [TS]

00:40:21   scene with Picard and the board Queen [TS]

00:40:23   where he's like but the ship oh i [TS]

00:40:25   remember when i was little cute i [TS]

00:40:27   remember you but that ship was blown up [TS]

00:40:28   and she looks at him with the stain and [TS]

00:40:30   says he's making such three-dimensional [TS]

00:40:32   terms that body is if you know her [TS]

00:40:36   that body is not her she is an [TS]

00:40:37   individual kind of but she's also a part [TS]

00:40:41   of the collective so that body just [TS]

00:40:42   appears whenever she needs it to be [TS]

00:40:44   because she is where the board is [TS]

00:40:46   because she is bored like the Trinity [TS]

00:40:48   people i mean even when they named him [TS]

00:40:49   Locutus they they did make it pretty [TS]

00:40:51   clear that they named him that because [TS]

00:40:54   they felt they needed a spokesman they [TS]

00:40:56   needed someone to communicate yeah so it [TS]

00:40:59   makes sense to me and I like the idea [TS]

00:41:00   that it's that you know she's she's not [TS]

00:41:02   an individual who runs the Borg she is [TS]

00:41:04   the body that they have created in order [TS]

00:41:08   to represent the you know the board in [TS]

00:41:11   conversation first first among equals [TS]

00:41:13   you could say that she's the devil that [TS]

00:41:15   they needed for data in some ways right [TS]

00:41:17   since to tempt data that may be why she [TS]

00:41:19   is there is because they did thats you [TS]

00:41:22   know she's required at that point it's [TS]

00:41:24   not like they said it's not like they [TS]

00:41:26   say oh well she's going to start the new [TS]

00:41:28   hive here on earth after we kill [TS]

00:41:30   everybody and we've got a whole plan to [TS]

00:41:32   do all of that so don't go into that [TS]

00:41:34   which i really like to just leave it [TS]

00:41:35   it's complicated it's more than three [TS]

00:41:37   dimensional humans wouldn't understand [TS]

00:41:40   us and another moment i like is when the [TS]

00:41:42   instructor dish like they get the the [TS]

00:41:45   dish off and that plan has stopped and [TS]

00:41:47   there's a moment she looks up and she [TS]

00:41:49   obviously realizes what has happened [TS]

00:41:51   because she is the board so she knows [TS]

00:41:52   what everything is going on and she says [TS]

00:41:54   change of plans [TS]

00:41:55   yeah it's still a villain and and but ya [TS]

00:41:59   gotta collect villain it's good it's [TS]

00:42:01   really good [TS]

00:42:02   Alice creek just good job it's a good [TS]

00:42:04   performance and absolutely [TS]

00:42:05   this movie is so well cast you know it [TS]

00:42:09   is it's it's not nothing against some of [TS]

00:42:12   the other castes but everyone even the [TS]

00:42:15   smallest parts are really nicely cast [TS]

00:42:18   and and especially you know Alfre [TS]

00:42:20   Woodard and James Cromwell and analysis [TS]

00:42:22   creek [TS]

00:42:23   come on yeah I know McDonough he dies [TS]

00:42:26   well uh huh [TS]

00:42:29   let's talk about it from Cochrane so [TS]

00:42:31   down on the planet down on earth i keep [TS]

00:42:33   calling it the planet but it's earth its [TS]

00:42:34   21st mid twenty-first century or not [TS]

00:42:37   that far from now we've got a third [TS]

00:42:39   world war two learn to live through as [TS]

00:42:41   real star trek that late 20th and early [TS]

00:42:43   21st century had world war three it was [TS]

00:42:45   very bad we survived their eugenics wars [TS]

00:42:47   already so we're doing all right blue [TS]

00:42:49   super soap so down in Montana an old the [TS]

00:42:52   nuclear missile silo Zefram Cochrane who [TS]

00:42:55   is this character who was mentioned and [TS]

00:42:58   shown sort of in his secret post faking [TS]

00:43:01   his death life being a very different [TS]

00:43:04   kind of guy but hey it was a long time [TS]

00:43:06   later but he was always supposed to be [TS]

00:43:08   the man who invented the warp drive so [TS]

00:43:09   here we see it [TS]

00:43:10   he is a hard-drinking scientists who [TS]

00:43:12   enjoys rockabilly on a jukebox [TS]

00:43:14   ok who so sure it so good possibility is [TS]

00:43:18   best on a jukebox i really like his coat [TS]

00:43:21   by the way impactful overall were there [TS]

00:43:24   it's a giant winner for me especially [TS]

00:43:26   compared to Picard space cardigan which [TS]

00:43:28   I find pretty lame yeah he's got a job [TS]

00:43:30   he's got a jug head hat yeah I like [TS]

00:43:33   Picard's 21st century earth outfit the [TS]

00:43:35   pants those pants are amazing [TS]

00:43:38   yeah so that we get different conference [TS]

00:43:40   down here and he's a and he's we meet [TS]

00:43:44   him and he's without talking to Lily but [TS]

00:43:46   then there's a there's an attack and and [TS]

00:43:49   by the Borg and and lily has to be taken [TS]

00:43:51   back to the ship so Cochran is down [TS]

00:43:53   there essentially with Ryker and Troy [TS]

00:43:55   and then an engineering team that's [TS]

00:43:58   going to help fix the damage to his ship [TS]

00:44:00   so that he can take off the next day and [TS]

00:44:02   that's that's the you could see that [TS]

00:44:04   kind of story line right where there's a [TS]

00:44:06   there's a technical store [TS]

00:44:09   about fixing the ship one of the things [TS]

00:44:10   that this movie does so well is that's [TS]

00:44:13   not what this whole segment is about [TS]

00:44:15   it's about Zefram Cochrane is a [TS]

00:44:16   character which first off kind of a big [TS]

00:44:18   deal for star trek movie to spend so [TS]

00:44:19   much time on a character arc of somebody [TS]

00:44:21   who's not one of the seven regular [TS]

00:44:23   characters but it's really good because [TS]

00:44:26   it's what somebody told you that you [TS]

00:44:28   were one of the most famous people in [TS]

00:44:29   history and what you're about to do is [TS]

00:44:31   going to change everything and then you [TS]

00:44:32   feel the weight of history pressing down [TS]

00:44:35   on you and that's what happens to that [TS]

00:44:37   from cochran here they're funny [TS]

00:44:39   there's there's a lot of funny stuff too [TS]

00:44:40   i really like the stuff with Ryker and [TS]

00:44:43   Troy I feel like jonathan frakes is [TS]

00:44:45   never better as Ryker than he is in the [TS]

00:44:47   scene where he finds droid drunk at the [TS]

00:44:49   bar [TS]

00:44:49   yep that was a great sea mile to smell [TS]

00:44:52   you just smile on his face but the smile [TS]

00:44:54   in his eyes is perfect [TS]

00:44:56   yeah LeVar Burton gets to go full [TS]

00:44:57   reading rainbow at one point statue [TS]

00:45:00   yes don't take my word for it he's got a [TS]

00:45:03   very specific like diction and cadence [TS]

00:45:05   there and I kept thinking of my cats are [TS]

00:45:07   reading rainbow episode but mine own for [TS]

00:45:08   this part mainly just reads don't meet [TS]

00:45:10   your heroes [TS]

00:45:11   yeah I do love the part with Georgie [TS]

00:45:14   says I probably shouldn't tell you this [TS]

00:45:15   but I went to separate cock again [TS]

00:45:17   yeah well there's that moment later [TS]

00:45:21   where Riker says to Jordi you told him [TS]

00:45:24   about the Statue Like don't just because [TS]

00:45:28   he's really runs off at one point and is [TS]

00:45:30   drinking in the in the wilderness and is [TS]

00:45:32   going to try to hide from them because [TS]

00:45:33   you just can't take it anymore Barkley [TS]

00:45:35   of course once his autograph essentially [TS]

00:45:37   but i really like that that he is not a [TS]

00:45:40   he's kind of a strange guy who's [TS]

00:45:42   building a spaceship out of a nuclear [TS]

00:45:44   missile complex on his own he's figured [TS]

00:45:45   out warp drive and it's fine when it's [TS]

00:45:48   just him and his friends messing around [TS]

00:45:49   trying to build this thing but then when [TS]

00:45:52   he when he sees the history of it he has [TS]

00:45:55   a hard time living up to it and I just I [TS]

00:45:57   really enjoy all of these parts i think [TS]

00:45:59   james cromwell does a great job with [TS]

00:46:00   this character and I and you know [TS]

00:46:03   there's a funny moment when they [TS]

00:46:05   launched and he and then there were they [TS]

00:46:06   have to abort the launch because he [TS]

00:46:07   can't find it the thing that's important [TS]

00:46:09   it's because he wants to play magic [TS]

00:46:10   carpet ride while they launched into [TS]

00:46:12   space office sony minidisc it's not [TS]

00:46:14   quite of the Beastie Boys roughly [TS]

00:46:17   one haha what I like about it is that [TS]

00:46:21   after we've spent this too much time [TS]

00:46:23   with Ephram Cochran do we really doubt [TS]

00:46:25   that he's got a song picked out [TS]

00:46:27   I don't ya i believe it yeah and James [TS]

00:46:30   Cromwell is one of those actors i grew [TS]

00:46:32   up watching him and he you know he was [TS]

00:46:34   one of those it's that guy in you know [TS]

00:46:36   he was stretch Cunningham on all in the [TS]

00:46:38   family he was on places like five [TS]

00:46:40   different people on Barney Miller and [TS]

00:46:41   really until he was in babe know he's [TS]

00:46:44   just hey it's that guy right yeah babe [TS]

00:46:46   and LA confidential and then I think the [TS]

00:46:48   Joe link to the the roger ebert review [TS]

00:46:51   of first contact which wich dread which [TS]

00:46:54   calls from james caldwell the tall [TS]

00:46:56   farmer from babe and I was like yeah [TS]

00:46:57   that's also where that you're arguing [TS]

00:46:59   but I was like you know he's just this [TS]

00:47:03   funny guy who appears on 76 comes and [TS]

00:47:07   and oh he's so good in this and the [TS]

00:47:10   comedy scenes on earth especially with [TS]

00:47:13   Zefram Cochrane interacting with all of [TS]

00:47:15   the other cast and crew we we get [TS]

00:47:17   history if you don't figure out that [TS]

00:47:19   familiar star trek but you also get a [TS]

00:47:21   moment to release some of the tension [TS]

00:47:23   that builds up in the action scenes that [TS]

00:47:25   are happening on the enterprise whenever [TS]

00:47:26   we cut back to this weekend we can sort [TS]

00:47:28   of like reset a little and come back [TS]

00:47:30   down and then we can go back to that and [TS]

00:47:32   the actions can start to build up again [TS]

00:47:33   which is something that doesn't happen [TS]

00:47:35   very often where you're just sleeping [TS]

00:47:37   from 10 gravity scene to another zero [TS]

00:47:39   gravity scene and backhoe along the you [TS]

00:47:42   know gravity current any thing towards [TS]

00:47:44   the thing to release the switch to the [TS]

00:47:46   levers or whatever so there's there's [TS]

00:47:48   there's none of the it having this [TS]

00:47:51   comedy helps the story structurally too [TS]

00:47:54   because you can you can sort of relax [TS]

00:47:57   and then get comfortable again it's not [TS]

00:47:59   just a constant barrage of of action p [TS]

00:48:02   so over action piece yet again again [TS]

00:48:04   it's that balance and economy they they [TS]

00:48:06   trust the audience to go with them they [TS]

00:48:09   trust the audience not to explain so [TS]

00:48:11   many things and it's delightful [TS]

00:48:14   I think that it's a good use I I praised [TS]

00:48:16   jonathan frakes performance directing [TS]

00:48:17   himself here but i think given how much [TS]

00:48:19   time he spent with marina sirtis i'm in [TS]

00:48:22   making the original next-generation [TS]

00:48:24   series [TS]

00:48:25   she's good here too and i'm not a big [TS]

00:48:27   fan of Troy but I think that she this is [TS]

00:48:30   the best [TS]

00:48:30   Troy that she is you know they should [TS]

00:48:34   yeah she's got funny drunk things which [TS]

00:48:36   you know what records you're drunk it's [TS]

00:48:38   like she's so drunk what you should [TS]

00:48:40   never say it but IM not what why does [TS]

00:48:44   she have that job it's like she knows [TS]

00:48:45   people [TS]

00:48:46   she's like she's like she's a counselor [TS]

00:48:48   she knows people she's the one you send [TS]

00:48:50   in there to talk to this guy and and [TS]

00:48:51   like all of her scenes i think are very [TS]

00:48:53   good and i'm not a fan of Troy and the [TS]

00:48:56   next generation very much I i think that [TS]

00:48:58   she was badly used but here she really [TS]

00:49:01   gets room to shine and I think she's [TS]

00:49:02   really good i think with our Burton is [TS]

00:49:04   good here because what we're seeing is [TS]

00:49:06   already doing his job right he's like I [TS]

00:49:08   get to fix the ship that I learned about [TS]

00:49:10   in school that's awesome and he's [TS]

00:49:12   instructing engineers to do all this [TS]

00:49:14   stuff and that's good too i love Georgie [TS]

00:49:16   is one of my favorite characters I feel [TS]

00:49:17   like he gets ill served a lot of [TS]

00:49:19   next-generation episodes and this is a [TS]

00:49:20   really good use of him Troy as well I i [TS]

00:49:23   like you i'm not a huge fan of her but I [TS]

00:49:25   I think she does really well here we see [TS]

00:49:26   the chemistry between her and Riker [TS]

00:49:28   which a lot of times we had told about [TS]

00:49:30   but don't necessarily experience or its [TS]

00:49:32   melodramatic and over-the-top where is [TS]

00:49:34   this one seems like oh yeah these are [TS]

00:49:36   too long friends / sometimes partners [TS]

00:49:39   who you know clearly have a rapport with [TS]

00:49:42   each other and and I think even the [TS]

00:49:44   drunk thing is funny to me because i [TS]

00:49:45   remember watching this as a [TS]

00:49:46   sixteen-year-old and thinking wow one of [TS]

00:49:50   the the next generation career is [TS]

00:49:51   getting drunk this is so like so wrong [TS]

00:49:55   it feels like so weird that he'd like it [TS]

00:49:57   yeah scandalous good work well gene was [TS]

00:49:59   dead by then so it's okay huh what else [TS]

00:50:01   to talk about here I I don't have a lot [TS]

00:50:03   of other notes these are the three [TS]

00:50:05   these are the three categories i think [TS]

00:50:07   at the end when the stories come [TS]

00:50:08   together is pretty good we see the [TS]

00:50:09   shadow of this of the enterprise-e on [TS]

00:50:13   the controls on the Phoenix which is the [TS]

00:50:15   warp ship and they say oh I'm sure [TS]

00:50:17   they're just here just give us a [TS]

00:50:19   send-off but meanwhile data is targeting [TS]

00:50:20   them with quantum torpedoes and it's a [TS]

00:50:22   it's a very exciting moment and and then [TS]

00:50:26   we discover of course data isn't [TS]

00:50:27   betraying them he's gonna he's gonna [TS]

00:50:30   miss they're gonna make their work jump [TS]

00:50:32   and i will say maybe having a volatile [TS]

00:50:37   material that will destroy all organic [TS]

00:50:39   material one bump from of a phaser rifle [TS]

00:50:43   away from killing everybody [TS]

00:50:44   engineering might be a design flaw but [TS]

00:50:46   it's good that it was a rise though [TS]

00:50:48   right like it doesn't go up that's nice [TS]

00:50:49   it's very heavy out on the floor the [TS]

00:50:51   advantage of using some really [TS]

00:50:53   questionable nineties cg volumetric [TS]

00:50:56   stuff i mean i think about just rates [TS]

00:50:59   i'm not even sure this billion metric [TS]

00:51:00   baby it looks it looks decidedly not [TS]

00:51:03   realistic in any capacity that's not yet [TS]

00:51:06   I i had a couple random notes one which [TS]

00:51:08   was i love when Riker tries to explain [TS]

00:51:10   the cochrane you know in cochrane sort [TS]

00:51:12   of repeats back to Mikey ok this is what [TS]

00:51:14   you're telling me there's a bunch of [TS]

00:51:16   like robots from the future trying to [TS]

00:51:18   come back and stop it's like he [TS]

00:51:19   literally just described terminator [TS]

00:51:21   terminator [TS]

00:51:22   well did you see the board queen at the [TS]

00:51:23   end she's the Terminator yes you know [TS]

00:51:26   she is determine areas is exactly i have [TS]

00:51:28   very terminator head written in my notes [TS]

00:51:30   as well I also that Jonathan Franks must [TS]

00:51:32   have a kink in his neck from looking up [TS]

00:51:34   the child james cromwell for this entire [TS]

00:51:36   about it and he's a big man hands and oh [TS]

00:51:40   yeah Patrick Stewart super-ripped good [TS]

00:51:42   for Patrick Stewart isn't it is it kinda [TS]

00:51:46   depressing to think that like I i wish i [TS]

00:51:48   could like told myself in you Nadine I [TS]

00:51:51   60 i saw this so like Brianna every [TS]

00:51:53   single star trek movie see from here on [TS]

00:51:55   out it's not gonna be as good [TS]

00:51:57   like that's really depressing click [TS]

00:52:00   2009.com despite you know I don't think [TS]

00:52:04   we've had a truly great star trek movie [TS]

00:52:05   since then and i would like to say a [TS]

00:52:08   samplin i wanted to mention the music [TS]

00:52:11   for a minute because this is jerry [TS]

00:52:12   goldsmith working on with his son Joel [TS]

00:52:15   and what I love about it is of course [TS]

00:52:17   Jerry Goldsmith did the next generation [TS]

00:52:19   theme when it was the Star Trek the [TS]

00:52:21   motion picture theme and so we get that [TS]

00:52:23   here and I like that it's sort of the [TS]

00:52:25   the night a nice uniting of the guy who [TS]

00:52:28   wrote the music for the show and the [TS]

00:52:30   people who are actually from that show [TS]

00:52:32   y'all together the motion picture [TS]

00:52:34   Klingon theme for world's great and the [TS]

00:52:39   first contact theme is fantastic i found [TS]

00:52:41   myself wandering around just like [TS]

00:52:42   whistling it's from myself after [TS]

00:52:44   watching the movie and there's a nice [TS]

00:52:45   board theme to which is that when it's [TS]

00:52:47   almost like the 2001 notes in a [TS]

00:52:50   different weird different key with some [TS]

00:52:52   weird electronic on top of it but we see [TS]

00:52:54   we hear that when the board up here [TS]

00:52:57   throughout so I I really actually like [TS]

00:52:58   the score a lot because of the nostalgia [TS]

00:53:00   and also because of the original stuff [TS]

00:53:03   that's in the movie I think it's pretty [TS]

00:53:04   good i mean there's a reason Goldsmith [TS]

00:53:05   is a legend I mean I wouldn't rip this a [TS]

00:53:08   couple days ago to listen to it again [TS]

00:53:09   because i own a CD of it from from 1996 [TS]

00:53:12   which is the only place you can get [TS]

00:53:14   CDC's days and it's really it's really [TS]

00:53:18   it's it's great it's a great score i [TS]

00:53:20   wish there I which I there were more [TS]

00:53:21   cues on the soundtrack but it's it's [TS]

00:53:24   really solid and goldsmith does elevate [TS]

00:53:26   this in a way that a lot of the you know [TS]

00:53:28   the TV stuff it's very different writing [TS]

00:53:30   music for you know 7 Series is 7 seasons [TS]

00:53:33   of a TV show than it is for writing for [TS]

00:53:35   a feature film and you know Jerry [TS]

00:53:37   Goldsmith once again displays why he is [TS]

00:53:38   an amazing amazing score [TS]

00:53:41   yeah I think that's also one of the [TS]

00:53:42   things that for me kind of hurt [TS]

00:53:44   generations is this score by Dennis [TS]

00:53:47   McCarthy does not have the very familiar [TS]

00:53:51   theme that you heard in every single [TS]

00:53:53   opening of every single star trek the [TS]

00:53:55   next generation episode so that that [TS]

00:53:58   that theme from the original motion [TS]

00:54:00   picture was completely absent from that [TS]

00:54:03   that episode I'm sorry that movie from [TS]

00:54:06   fellow it's kind of an episode last [TS]

00:54:07   episode you update the but this movie [TS]

00:54:10   has it and he would go on to score all [TS]

00:54:14   of the remaining next-generation movies [TS]

00:54:16   all three of these and i have to say [TS]

00:54:19   that first contact is my favorite of [TS]

00:54:21   them there are some action cues that I [TS]

00:54:23   like an insurrection but this one really [TS]

00:54:26   holds together very well and is quite [TS]

00:54:30   possibly my favorite of the three [TS]

00:54:32   nemesis is just like a disaster [TS]

00:54:35   unfortunately in all levels yeah I I [TS]

00:54:39   think he was probably given some bad [TS]

00:54:41   direction by the director or something [TS]

00:54:43   but that soundtrack they all were great [TS]

00:54:46   but there's no aspect of that movie that [TS]

00:54:49   wasn't a bad direction but the the [TS]

00:54:51   that's one of the things that I really [TS]

00:54:53   love about first contact and I've lost [TS]

00:54:55   my original CD so i cant i cant a boot [TS]

00:54:58   up a nineties operating system to access [TS]

00:55:00   the digital extras that are still on it [TS]

00:55:01   so I'm gonna go around the panel and ask [TS]

00:55:04   for some sort of final thoughts over all [TS]

00:55:07   about how you feel about first contact [TS]

00:55:09   and [TS]

00:55:10   the top the hard question which is where [TS]

00:55:12   does it rank where does it rank in Star [TS]

00:55:14   Trek movies where would you where you [TS]

00:55:16   put it [TS]

00:55:17   I'm curious about that so let me start [TS]

00:55:20   with with bri since she sort of started [TS]

00:55:22   down this path and saying that we [TS]

00:55:24   haven't seen its like since we're [TS]

00:55:26   bringing overall thoughts about first [TS]

00:55:28   contact and where would you rank it [TS]

00:55:30   well i think it's it's a third as second [TS]

00:55:32   best Star Trek movie right like wrath of [TS]

00:55:34   khan is definitely the best one that has [TS]

00:55:37   the best merit I think the shot really [TS]

00:55:40   pulled it together that filling really [TS]

00:55:42   delivered extremely powerful performance [TS]

00:55:45   but you know I i think this is a movie [TS]

00:55:48   it really comes close [TS]

00:55:50   I really really close and think it's the [TS]

00:55:52   the best moment that you know generation [TS]

00:55:55   on the next generation staff had [TS]

00:55:57   together so I i guess i would say I [TS]

00:56:01   always watch this movie and I am a [TS]

00:56:04   little bit sad because this was a time [TS]

00:56:06   period where we were talking about [TS]

00:56:08   perhaps getting you avoid movie made and [TS]

00:56:12   wasn't really clear where your broom [TS]

00:56:14   we're going to go after a next [TS]

00:56:16   generation had their shot and you know [TS]

00:56:19   like you guys are laughing at the doctor [TS]

00:56:21   and your Janeway small cameo but to me [TS]

00:56:23   it's like um I don't know like this is [TS]

00:56:26   the one the last chance that we we [TS]

00:56:28   really had to see that crew on the big [TS]

00:56:31   screen and we never did so it's always a [TS]

00:56:33   little bittersweet for me [TS]

00:56:34   so what about you where where does this [TS]

00:56:36   movie rank overall and what are your [TS]

00:56:38   overall thoughts about it i love this [TS]

00:56:39   movie [TS]

00:56:40   I have a hard time ranking it exactly [TS]

00:56:44   with everything a kind of toss it back [TS]

00:56:47   and forth between a couple because i do [TS]

00:56:51   think that wrath of khan is my favorite [TS]

00:56:53   but II there are some things about it [TS]

00:56:56   there in terms of filmmaking our little [TS]

00:56:58   dated [TS]

00:56:59   unfortunately I i still love it so no [TS]

00:57:02   one sent me an angry letter by the same [TS]

00:57:05   kind of goes for structure for which I [TS]

00:57:07   also love i also love the movie star [TS]

00:57:10   trek six I really do love a lot but i [TS]

00:57:13   think first contact might be above [TS]

00:57:14   either six or voyage home depending on [TS]

00:57:19   my mood but that's that's where I would [TS]

00:57:22   would rank them and I I think this might [TS]

00:57:24   be definitely the most cinematic version [TS]

00:57:29   of the next generation you're going to [TS]

00:57:30   see it is on the big screen for four [TS]

00:57:33   movies but this is this is the movie of [TS]

00:57:36   this cast [TS]

00:57:37   jamel what do you want your overall [TS]

00:57:39   thought about this and where do you [TS]

00:57:40   slotted in the cannon so I think I i [TS]

00:57:43   think it may be on the younger and of [TS]

00:57:45   the group here and the next generation [TS]

00:57:47   as a series very much like my track it [TS]

00:57:51   to track i grew up watching with my [TS]

00:57:53   family and the next generation and the [TS]

00:57:55   first contact has a sort of special [TS]

00:57:58   place in my in my movie viewing life is [TS]

00:58:03   rid of the movie is Allah knows a kid [TS]

00:58:05   and still you know pretty important to [TS]

00:58:07   me and i love it on this very kind of [TS]

00:58:10   emotional level and it is one of my [TS]

00:58:14   favorite tracks I i think i would place [TS]

00:58:16   it third with my favorite being [TS]

00:58:19   undiscovered country followed by wrath [TS]

00:58:23   of khan and then first contact i wanna [TS]

00:58:26   sort of go to something [TS]

00:58:29   Bree said which yet was her her view [TS]

00:58:35   that mr. of the last great track movie [TS]

00:58:40   and every kind of trying to think about [TS]

00:58:41   like why that might have been made in my [TS]

00:58:44   answer ANSWER have for myself at least [TS]

00:58:46   is that I think it's served after the [TS]

00:58:49   next generation and this may just [TS]

00:58:50   reflect larger trends in Hollywood that [TS]

00:58:54   track movies just became a member [TS]

00:58:57   no species of action film and they're [TS]

00:59:00   willing the willingness to kind of [TS]

00:59:02   approach different kinds of genres [TS]

00:59:03   within the track world one away right so [TS]

00:59:07   like undiscovered country is basically a [TS]

00:59:10   procedural like that is that's what that [TS]

00:59:12   home is a procedural that happens when [TS]

00:59:14   the trek universe trying to answer a [TS]

00:59:16   central mystery the first contact is I [TS]

00:59:20   think a lot of ways a horror movie with [TS]

00:59:23   the some unit a fish out of water comedy [TS]

00:59:25   thrown in [TS]

00:59:27   to give it some levity but but since [TS]

00:59:31   then we just happen i don't think [TS]

00:59:33   there's been a real willingness weather [TS]

00:59:35   for market reasons or just for you lack [TS]

00:59:37   of creativity to really be used to track [TS]

00:59:41   as like an umbrella for a you know [TS]

00:59:44   exploring these characters in this world [TS]

00:59:46   in in and the using different genres and [TS]

00:59:51   I don't know you're gonna get that back [TS]

00:59:53   and it's sort of why I kind of think [TS]

00:59:55   that the best place for track really is [TS]

00:59:59   television [TS]

00:59:59   television [TS]

01:00:00   and I'm not sure yeah I'm not sure [TS]

01:00:02   movies ultimately or feature films [TS]

01:00:05   ultimately all right sure are [TS]

01:00:08   well-suited for what I think makes track [TS]

01:00:11   track [TS]

01:00:13   yeah I think there's a lot of truth when [TS]

01:00:14   we talk about that in past episodes to [TS]

01:00:15   that star trek on TV is it is a TV [TS]

01:00:18   franchise ultimately and there are some [TS]

01:00:21   good movies too but it it seems to be [TS]

01:00:23   the best I did see a story at one point [TS]

01:00:25   about how I mean paramount is basically [TS]

01:00:27   in if it wasn't chaos and now it's in [TS]

01:00:30   double chaos given all the ownership [TS]

01:00:33   issues but I did see a story about the [TS]

01:00:36   idea of what it what if they like [TS]

01:00:38   everybody they're like what if we follow [TS]

01:00:40   from Marvel's example and do a a bunch [TS]

01:00:43   of movies in the star trek universe that [TS]

01:00:46   tell different stories and I thought [TS]

01:00:47   that might work i don't know if it would [TS]

01:00:49   but it might work at least in that you [TS]

01:00:51   would have the freedom to not have one [TS]

01:00:53   movie every three years that had to be a [TS]

01:00:55   huge action tentpole movie because you [TS]

01:00:57   were making a bunch of different smoke [TS]

01:00:59   maybe a little bit smaller movies in [TS]

01:01:02   corners of the universe but I don't know [TS]

01:01:03   how realistic that is in today's feature [TS]

01:01:06   film business versus putting it on TV [TS]

01:01:08   which is what CBS is doing with [TS]

01:01:10   startling discovery [TS]

01:01:11   Star Trek seems like a perfect fit for [TS]

01:01:13   netflix to me but you know let's move [TS]

01:01:15   this was his money [TS]

01:01:17   it's netflix and the rest of the world [TS]

01:01:19   that makes you feel any better [TS]

01:01:20   yeah it isn't like so everywhere but [TS]

01:01:22   here David what are your overall [TS]

01:01:25   thoughts about first contact and where [TS]

01:01:26   do you rank it I well you know i love it [TS]

01:01:29   when when i saw it it's one of the few [TS]

01:01:31   few movies i saw it twice the opening [TS]

01:01:33   weekend and it i would put it right up [TS]

01:01:38   there with wrath of khan you know and [TS]

01:01:40   and only like by a couple of degrees [TS]

01:01:43   it's like that close for me it's just it [TS]

01:01:48   the story telling us so streamlined and [TS]

01:01:51   so I mean did this is a this is the next [TS]

01:01:54   generation firing on all cylinders right [TS]

01:01:56   and I remember walking out of it very [TS]

01:01:59   hopeful for where they were going to go [TS]

01:02:01   because they were all still pretty young [TS]

01:02:04   and you know and I I i know some fans [TS]

01:02:08   are not crazy about Brandon braga after [TS]

01:02:10   a while but i like Braga and [TS]

01:02:12   or when they're working together I [TS]

01:02:13   forgive them for generations yet to have [TS]

01:02:16   the promise of future next-generation [TS]

01:02:19   movies followed up with insurrection and [TS]

01:02:21   everything I was just crushing and and [TS]

01:02:24   even you know again just watching it [TS]

01:02:26   recently for this it's the same [TS]

01:02:28   excitement it's like I want to see more [TS]

01:02:30   with them doing big things and there are [TS]

01:02:34   two other things that I can watch them [TS]

01:02:35   doing big things but i don't watch them [TS]

01:02:36   again and I you know I've said it before [TS]

01:02:39   I kind of like insurrection it's it's [TS]

01:02:43   still it's like maybe mid range for me [TS]

01:02:45   you know it's not it's not nemesis God [TS]

01:02:49   knows but yeah I just I really like [TS]

01:02:53   first contact i love that it allows the [TS]

01:02:55   characters to have dimension that they [TS]

01:02:57   don't get to have in any of the other [TS]

01:02:58   movies and you get to see them doing [TS]

01:03:01   things that they don't do all the time [TS]

01:03:04   except maybe Worf because work is worth [TS]

01:03:06   a lot of a lot of bittersweetness when [TS]

01:03:08   we think about what happened after this [TS]

01:03:10   movie it's really sad [TS]

01:03:11   yeah Anna your your final thoughts and [TS]

01:03:14   and ranking for first contact yeah it's [TS]

01:03:16   a it's a damn shame that we only got we [TS]

01:03:18   have four movies and we'll only one of [TS]

01:03:20   them was like really tremendously good i [TS]

01:03:22   do have a soft spot for generations but [TS]

01:03:23   I you know it's not nearly as good as [TS]

01:03:25   first contact [TS]

01:03:26   yeah I i really like first contact i [TS]

01:03:28   haven't watched it in many years and so [TS]

01:03:30   I was kind of trepidatious when I sat [TS]

01:03:32   down to watch it wondering if it held up [TS]

01:03:34   and and by gosh it did I really enjoyed [TS]

01:03:37   that I was not bored for a single moment [TS]

01:03:39   I i really felt very engaged and and it [TS]

01:03:43   was zero just as good as i remember [TS]

01:03:44   seeing it in the movie theater so I feel [TS]

01:03:46   good about that although to you know to [TS]

01:03:48   breeze point emails point about the [TS]

01:03:49   other as a TV series i think i think [TS]

01:03:52   that's there's something to be said for [TS]

01:03:54   that it is really hard i mean the [TS]

01:03:55   nineties worry more the sort of that the [TS]

01:03:58   birth of the big blockbuster action [TS]

01:04:00   movie and as a teenager in that era I [TS]

01:04:03   went and saw a bunch of them some i [TS]

01:04:05   guess i'm part of the problem but I [TS]

01:04:07   don't forget about mine [TS]

01:04:08   I never got my ds9 move either so you [TS]

01:04:11   know yeah there's that I guess I [TS]

01:04:13   suffered through that as well as far as [TS]

01:04:15   overall ranking I think I probably on in [TS]

01:04:18   club Joe here [TS]

01:04:19   iie it's hard for me to put a ranking on [TS]

01:04:22   them wrath of khan obviously has a lot [TS]

01:04:25   going for it and is it is a you know a [TS]

01:04:28   technical masterpiece I think like Jim [TS]

01:04:30   ally I grew up with TNG and and so these [TS]

01:04:33   guys are more like my crew than the [TS]

01:04:35   original series crew was and I certainly [TS]

01:04:38   you know watch a lot more next [TS]

01:04:39   generation before I saw any of the [TS]

01:04:41   original series for much of the original [TS]

01:04:42   series so I I kind of put this up there [TS]

01:04:44   with them but it's also a little bit [TS]

01:04:46   apples and oranges I do love four and [TS]

01:04:49   six just because of their their [TS]

01:04:50   respective nature's for as a great [TS]

01:04:53   comedy show piece and six just because [TS]

01:04:56   it's it's a thriller great great you fun [TS]

01:04:58   to watch thriller very popcorn me [TS]

01:05:00   without being too ridiculous like [TS]

01:05:02   blockbuster action movie so you know [TS]

01:05:05   those are those are I think the four [TS]

01:05:06   star trek movies that i would gladly [TS]

01:05:07   watch it anytime no matter what so I I'm [TS]

01:05:12   okay putting them all in a little pool [TS]

01:05:13   together right Scott [TS]

01:05:15   it's down to you now what are your [TS]

01:05:16   thoughts about first contact and where [TS]

01:05:18   rates [TS]

01:05:18   well I will echo many sentiments I i [TS]

01:05:21   love first contact i do hate the opening [TS]

01:05:25   credits though they're so so bland if [TS]

01:05:28   they are awful [TS]

01:05:29   I don't know why there should i had a [TS]

01:05:31   note about most generic titles ever I [TS]

01:05:34   sure it's some contractual thing to have [TS]

01:05:37   awful opening credits or something but i [TS]

01:05:39   just don't like that and it's so sad [TS]

01:05:41   want to write the fun the opening scene [TS]

01:05:44   is so great but the credits are just [TS]

01:05:46   awful and even that's a the generations [TS]

01:05:49   credits that you are better you know you [TS]

01:05:51   follow that champagne bottle you don't [TS]

01:05:53   know how to dance at the beginning [TS]

01:05:54   you're like what the heck of an echo its [TS]

01:05:56   champion anyway [TS]

01:05:58   clearly his first contact is the third [TS]

01:06:02   best Star Trek movie but it was no doubt [TS]

01:06:05   about it [TS]

01:06:06   wrath of khan uh [TS]

01:06:09   the undiscovered country first contact [TS]

01:06:12   probably then star trek for and then [TS]

01:06:16   star trek 2009 reboot probably would be [TS]

01:06:20   by my rankings beyond oh you put beyond [TS]

01:06:25   what 2,000 i like it i just destroyed [TS]

01:06:28   micro ok I'm right there with you I [TS]

01:06:30   thought Scott was gonna go left field [TS]

01:06:33   and say like and then star trek five you [TS]

01:06:34   know your stuff [TS]

01:06:35   what has gotten into instruction not in [TS]

01:06:37   front of the Klingons yeah but I mean [TS]

01:06:40   the end and there's just so much that I [TS]

01:06:42   like about first contact i can't think [TS]

01:06:45   of anything other than the opening [TS]

01:06:47   credits that I don't like about first so [TS]

01:06:50   I mean kudos to everyone involved and I [TS]

01:06:53   mean I I you know as everyone said the [TS]

01:06:56   next generation movies afterwards not [TS]

01:06:59   very good i do like generations so it's [TS]

01:07:03   not nearly as good as first contact but [TS]

01:07:05   i do like it i like seeing William [TS]

01:07:06   Shatner trucking around on a horse for [TS]

01:07:07   no apparent reason [TS]

01:07:09   making eggs eggs looking at a clock you [TS]

01:07:14   know a guy name is in generations since [TS]

01:07:15   I think it has its moments but uh yeah i [TS]

01:07:20   mean first contact if they would made a [TS]

01:07:23   more first contacts i will just keep [TS]

01:07:24   watching [TS]

01:07:25   but sadly i didn't they didn't they [TS]

01:07:28   didn't do that well I i agree with what [TS]

01:07:30   everybody said this is this is a great [TS]

01:07:31   movie i was reminded about how great it [TS]

01:07:33   is [TS]

01:07:33   I i love it a lot i think i would [TS]

01:07:36   probably say there are only been to [TS]

01:07:38   legitimately great star trek movies and [TS]

01:07:40   that their wrath of khan and first [TS]

01:07:42   contact and when I hear people running [TS]

01:07:45   down the next generation movies i have [TS]

01:07:47   this moment where I'm like you've seen [TS]

01:07:50   first contact because it's really good [TS]

01:07:52   like it's a written it's not the wrath [TS]

01:07:54   of khan being replayed it's a really [TS]

01:07:56   good movie on its own and so I think [TS]

01:07:59   those that's number one and revocations [TS]

01:08:01   one of my favorite movies if not my [TS]

01:08:03   favorite movie of all time but first [TS]

01:08:05   contact is I think very clearly in that [TS]

01:08:07   same in that same category as a truly [TS]

01:08:10   great star trek movie and then yeah we [TS]

01:08:11   can we can argue about what goes below [TS]

01:08:13   that I think maybe I put 2009 third but [TS]

01:08:16   yeah you know 20 it's a there so there's [TS]

01:08:19   there's there's good charge recognize [TS]

01:08:21   bad Star Trek we've established this [TS]

01:08:22   this is [TS]

01:08:23   good Star Trek it's sad what happened [TS]

01:08:24   afterward but this is good stuff for the [TS]

01:08:27   fact that it makes me really feel [TS]

01:08:28   nostalgic for the next generation [TS]

01:08:30   I grew up with original series as a kid [TS]

01:08:32   I don't remember not knowing about the [TS]

01:08:33   original Star Trek and the next [TS]

01:08:35   generation was the show I became a fan [TS]

01:08:36   of because i wasn't i was a high school [TS]

01:08:39   and college student when it was on so I [TS]

01:08:41   was deep down into my excitement as a as [TS]

01:08:44   a sci-fi fan for next generation and I [TS]

01:08:47   see this movie and I think this is how [TS]

01:08:49   great that cast was and how great that [TS]

01:08:51   show was it validates that in a strange [TS]

01:08:54   way that like the original series got [TS]

01:08:56   these good movies what about the next [TS]

01:08:57   generation and hear it here it is like [TS]

01:08:59   see what they can do when all the things [TS]

01:09:02   are right see what this casket we also [TS]

01:09:04   got all the we get all the tos reunion [TS]

01:09:07   and like you know them coming back years [TS]

01:09:08   after the show i kinda want the TNG [TS]

01:09:10   reunion now where they will read my no [TS]

01:09:12   band back together one last time right [TS]

01:09:14   yeah exactly yeah I I don't think it's [TS]

01:09:17   to be but I would ever know what i want [TS]

01:09:19   i love to see Patrick they were [TS]

01:09:20   difficult art one last time with the [TS]

01:09:21   great and you know say what you will [TS]

01:09:23   about the first couple of seasons of [TS]

01:09:25   next generation or the first couple [TS]

01:09:27   seasons of well any of them up but they [TS]

01:09:30   were all really well cast and the [TS]

01:09:33   characters i even in the worst episodes [TS]

01:09:37   the characters were enough to get you [TS]

01:09:38   through sometimes and this is you talk [TS]

01:09:40   about the the reunion which is [TS]

01:09:42   essentially what those Star Trek movies [TS]

01:09:43   were the original Star Trek movies [TS]

01:09:45   that's that's actually one of the power [TS]

01:09:47   powerful things about this is that at [TS]

01:09:49   least this is the team basically at the [TS]

01:09:52   top of their game this isn't 15 years [TS]

01:09:55   after they were on tue coming back and [TS]

01:09:58   talking about aging this is the team [TS]

01:10:00   doing their thing and you can imagine [TS]

01:10:03   that they've been out on missions and [TS]

01:10:05   that enterprise-e for a while now and [TS]

01:10:08   who knows what they were we didn't get [TS]

01:10:09   to see them but uh that's that's really [TS]

01:10:12   cool too so it's just it's yeah i love [TS]

01:10:14   it i want to give it a big hug [TS]

01:10:16   except and I just I get turned into a [TS]

01:10:18   board it would be bad don't know Jason [TS]

01:10:20   don't let them touch you know hole no [TS]

01:10:23   I'll just tell them to assimilate this [TS]

01:10:24   anyway so happy 50th anniversary of Star [TS]

01:10:28   Trek and here's to another 50 and here's [TS]

01:10:30   to a neutron star trek TV series in 2017 [TS]

01:10:33   I think we're all looking forward to [TS]

01:10:35   some star trek on TV maybe where it [TS]

01:10:36   belongs but uh but 50 years what a [TS]

01:10:39   milestone so let me thank my panel for [TS]

01:10:42   coming in and ensuring some happy [TS]

01:11:00   little ships I did actually there's one [TS]

01:11:03   of them on my desk that is broken every [TS]

01:11:06   one important lesson that we learned [TS]

01:11:07   from this movie bored have very bad [TS]

01:11:09   eyesight [TS]

01:11:10   yeah I just don't care they're really [TS]

01:11:13   just kind of listless and they just [TS]

01:11:15   don't care [TS]
