00:01:42   love this movie so much i was in the [TS]

00:01:44   theater was a kid when I first came out [TS]

00:01:45   and I'm definitely here as the the blind [TS]

00:01:54   going to savage this is not a rocket [TS]

00:02:06   released in june of 1982 Star Wars was [TS]

00:02:11   and ET surpassed it and became a fort [TS]

00:02:16   for a decade the highest-grossing motion [TS]

00:02:19   picture of all time until another Steven [TS]

00:02:22   Spielberg movie Jurassic Park passed in [TS]

00:02:24   the 90 so [TS]

00:02:24   this was a success on essentially every [TS]

00:02:28   level [TS]

00:02:29   everybody saw it in the eighties [TS]

00:02:31   everybody loved it they didn't put it [TS]

00:02:34   out on home video for like six years [TS]

00:02:35   because they just kept re-releasing into [TS]

00:02:37   theaters and made people increasingly [TS]

00:02:39   angry I and then for many years it it be [TS]

00:02:43   still but I for many years I think NBC [TS]

00:02:45   broadcast it on Thanksgiving night as [TS]

00:02:48   sort of a good for the whole family [TS]

00:02:50   holiday film so yeah I think the most [TS]

00:02:53   impressive thing about et's species by [TS]

00:02:56   the way is that they travel across the [TS]

00:02:58   galaxy using only the power of rainbows [TS]

00:03:04   oh don't make me make David Sparkes [TS]

00:03:08   angry with me this early [TS]

00:03:10   please go drive the rainbow drives and [TS]

00:03:13   flowers it's a perfectly and there they [TS]

00:03:15   we come with rainbows seeking your [TS]

00:03:17   it's great it's pretty awesome alright [TS]

00:03:20   so et is a it's very interesting movie [TS]

00:03:24   in that I was gonna up before I serve [TS]

00:03:27   summarizing the plot i guess i have an [TS]

00:03:29   opening statement after all I'm [TS]

00:03:30   surprised but I say this about some [TS]

00:03:34   miyazaki movies totoro and kiki's [TS]

00:03:37   delivery service very specifically in [TS]

00:03:39   that there's kind of no bad guy in ET [TS]

00:03:42   there's Peter Coyote who is keys the [TS]

00:03:47   government agent who is searching for et [TS]

00:03:51   but even he in the end is kind of turns [TS]

00:03:57   out is not a bad guy they're just trying [TS]

00:03:59   to find this alien land that landed [TS]

00:04:02   their threat more threats than a [TS]

00:04:05   miyazaki movie because you do have the [TS]

00:04:06   sort of sinister music as the government [TS]

00:04:09   people look for ET but it's pretty [TS]

00:04:13   gentle it is a pretty kind of [TS]

00:04:15   delightfully gentle movie i have not [TS]

00:04:18   seen it since 1982 and it's stuck with [TS]

00:04:22   me pretty well but i did not remember it [TS]

00:04:25   being so lyrical I didn't remember it [TS]

00:04:27   being so [TS]

00:04:29   sweet you know it felt like it felt like [TS]

00:04:33   just a big blockbuster back then it's [TS]

00:04:35   very different looking at with severely [TS]

00:04:39   aged eyes [TS]

00:04:40   yeah I had kind of the same experience I [TS]

00:04:42   I don't remember when I saw it for the [TS]

00:04:44   first time I know it wasn't on its [TS]

00:04:46   original release in the theater because [TS]

00:04:47   we couldn't afford to go to movies so i [TS]

00:04:49   suspect i saw it like on VHS later or [TS]

00:04:51   maybe one of the releases and maybe saw [TS]

00:04:55   parts of it in between then and now but [TS]

00:04:57   didn't have a whole lot of memory like [TS]

00:04:59   the memories that I remembered where [TS]

00:05:00   that the the threats as you put it Jason [TS]

00:05:03   in the film were more heavy and real [TS]

00:05:06   than they are watching it as an adult so [TS]

00:05:09   I think it I think that you know that [TS]

00:05:11   that worked their whole swaths a plot [TS]

00:05:13   that i did not remember that you know [TS]

00:05:15   this did so yeah I think it's a [TS]

00:05:17   different experience watching it as an [TS]

00:05:18   adult but i think that the reason that [TS]

00:05:20   it worked so well and you know became [TS]

00:05:23   the top-grossing film for so many years [TS]

00:05:25   is because it did feel like it was a a a [TS]

00:05:28   real threat and sort of a scary movie 2 [TS]

00:05:31   kids to some extent interesting to me is [TS]

00:05:33   when I was a kid and I saw the first [TS]

00:05:35   time of course identified with Elliot [TS]

00:05:37   yeah and and that's part of the reason [TS]

00:05:39   why i love this movie so much is it is a [TS]

00:05:41   time capsule of my childhood I had a [TS]

00:05:43   friend that were ski mask we played [TS]

00:05:45   Dungeons and Dragons I mean the stuff [TS]

00:05:47   the stuff in the movie that you look at [TS]

00:05:49   it with 2016 eyes you say all that none [TS]

00:05:52   of that happened no it all happened it's [TS]

00:05:53   always in Elliot's room [TS]

00:05:54   yeah yeah okay we get on our bikes and [TS]

00:05:57   we had to be home when it was dark and [TS]

00:05:59   other otherwise our parents had no idea [TS]

00:06:01   where we were and it just was kind of it [TS]

00:06:03   was a snapshot of my childhood so of [TS]

00:06:05   course i love that now but as a kid I [TS]

00:06:07   identify with Elliot then my daughter is [TS]

00:06:10   now 20 when she was like for I hadn't [TS]

00:06:12   seen the moving years and I said well I [TS]

00:06:14   think she's ready for a tissot watch TT [TS]

00:06:16   and i just i think i got very nostalgic [TS]

00:06:18   seen that stuff but also the interesting [TS]

00:06:21   thing to me was when I watched it when [TS]

00:06:23   she was a child was identified with keys [TS]

00:06:25   which I hadn't seen the movie from keys [TS]

00:06:28   perspective in open you know when you [TS]

00:06:30   think about it as an adult you're [TS]

00:06:31   watching oh my goodness he's these [TS]

00:06:33   people have this alien in their house [TS]

00:06:35   and 30 [TS]

00:06:37   isn't so it was it was a good experience [TS]

00:06:39   for me from both ends of the transaction [TS]

00:06:42   i guess you would say now I feel alive [TS]

00:06:44   again maybe as an adult looking at it [TS]

00:06:46   but the threat here is not really a [TS]

00:06:49   threat that anything to they're gonna do [TS]

00:06:51   something terrible to ET the thread is [TS]

00:06:53   more like they're going to ruin our fun [TS]

00:06:55   we have an alien in our house [TS]

00:06:58   I don't want anybody else to know about [TS]

00:07:00   her or or find him [TS]

00:07:02   I just want to keep them for myself as [TS]

00:07:04   the hey Erica it's a one alien for [TS]

00:07:07   Christmas right by one that's exactly it [TS]

00:07:09   i want to i just did he's from his mind [TS]

00:07:12   he's my pet alien and so that's the [TS]

00:07:15   threat from the government is like you [TS]

00:07:17   know they want to ruin everything by [TS]

00:07:18   like learning about him and maybe you [TS]

00:07:22   know because honestly could ET have [TS]

00:07:24   communicated to his home and radioed [TS]

00:07:27   home more effectively with the resources [TS]

00:07:29   of the federal government probably this [TS]

00:07:32   felt the little more sinister than that [TS]

00:07:34   in that I thought that there was kind of [TS]

00:07:36   a bad guy which is what the ignorance of [TS]

00:07:38   adults throughout this movie except for [TS]

00:07:41   Elliot's mom you never see it it's [TS]

00:07:44   almost like peanuts come to life you'll [TS]

00:07:46   never see adult heads you never see [TS]

00:07:48   anything in anything like that and the [TS]

00:07:51   first time that you actually see a [TS]

00:07:53   full-on human silhouette is when you've [TS]

00:07:55   got when you've got dudes an astronaut [TS]

00:07:59   suits uh the walking dead in their way [TS]

00:08:02   and yet in the front door that's super [TS]

00:08:04   scary and we would need to talk more [TS]

00:08:06   about that when we get there but you're [TS]

00:08:07   right i mean yeah you're right there [TS]

00:08:08   it's a threat and if you're a kid seems [TS]

00:08:10   like there's just as an adult I look at [TS]

00:08:11   it and I think yeah you know is that is [TS]

00:08:15   it really that scary you know if the [TS]

00:08:17   music is scary that's actually one of my [TS]

00:08:20   first notes is that this is john [TS]

00:08:22   williams a year after raiders of the [TS]

00:08:24   lost ark doing a score that at moments [TS]

00:08:27   is the uplifting ET kind of music that [TS]

00:08:30   we think of but especially in the early [TS]

00:08:32   scenes it's much more raiders of the [TS]

00:08:34   lost ark where it's sort of slow and [TS]

00:08:37   kind of dissonant and spooky and I think [TS]

00:08:42   that does that I think that goes a long [TS]

00:08:43   way that the the people in their cars [TS]

00:08:46   going through the forest and the and the [TS]

00:08:47   john williams music makes it seems [TS]

00:08:49   scarier [TS]

00:08:50   then you know at least as an adult I [TS]

00:08:52   look at it and I think they're you know [TS]

00:08:54   they're just looking for it that they [TS]

00:08:55   think there's an alien spaceship that [TS]

00:08:57   landed in the forest because one did and [TS]

00:08:59   they want to find out about it you know [TS]

00:09:01   that's not not unreasonable but maybe [TS]

00:09:03   this means i'm terrible and I should get [TS]

00:09:05   a set of keys needed my help we're also [TS]

00:09:07   looking at it in a post x-files world so [TS]

00:09:10   now we can empathize with FBI agents [TS]

00:09:12   looking for aliens I kept expecting keys [TS]

00:09:16   to sort of morph into the dude from the [TS]

00:09:19   Starman TV show opening theme where he's [TS]

00:09:23   always talking to camera i can get you [TS]

00:09:25   the alien but he doesn't ask Peter [TS]

00:09:27   Coyote he tells a nice story at the end [TS]

00:09:29   about how he's been dreaming about alien [TS]

00:09:31   since he was since he was Elliot's agent [TS]

00:09:33   turns out he's you know he's just a [TS]

00:09:34   regular guy and he feels really sad like [TS]

00:09:36   all the doctors do but we'll get there [TS]

00:09:38   maybe we should start at the beginning [TS]

00:09:39   and mrs. very good interesting we see [TS]

00:09:42   keys investigating it's all dialogue [TS]

00:09:45   long stretch of of no dialogue here we [TS]

00:09:47   don't really that we see the people [TS]

00:09:49   investigating the alien landing you know [TS]

00:09:53   I the there's a spaceship there they're [TS]

00:09:56   going through the forest great gathering [TS]

00:09:58   plants people are coming we see the keys [TS]

00:10:01   there is this John Williams score that [TS]

00:10:03   is great but its its its sinister and [TS]

00:10:06   then in the end the alien spaceship [TS]

00:10:09   sends out its called for its to recall [TS]

00:10:11   all of its botanist or whatever and one [TS]

00:10:15   of them gets left behind and that's [TS]

00:10:17   that's our buddy that's ee that's the [TS]

00:10:20   the title extraterrestrial i love the [TS]

00:10:24   love the way they when they say they're [TS]

00:10:25   scrambling to look because they think [TS]

00:10:27   there's one left and they want to take [TS]

00:10:30   off and then there's a shot at a fence [TS]

00:10:32   where all the flashlights point up in [TS]

00:10:34   the sky following the spaceship and then [TS]

00:10:37   simultaneously they all go down and [TS]

00:10:39   start their search [TS]

00:10:41   it's very Spielberg to me oh yeah yes [TS]

00:10:44   yeah they're there are a number of of [TS]

00:10:46   times where things are you know [TS]

00:10:48   realism is sacrificed for the sake of [TS]

00:10:50   getting the shot or making something [TS]

00:10:52   beautiful like keys for example who [TS]

00:10:54   keeps moving his keys from one side of [TS]

00:10:56   his hips to the other does that mean [TS]

00:10:59   this thing he's got a lot of key to [TS]

00:11:00   unlock a lot of doors that's the thing I [TS]

00:11:02   kept thinking too is like why do you [TS]

00:11:04   need any keys back in the days when the [TS]

00:11:06   size of your keyring you know she'll [TS]

00:11:08   never Andy work i love the world [TS]

00:11:10   building of the you know the interior of [TS]

00:11:13   the ship you know you pay attention and [TS]

00:11:14   yet it it's a bottom the expedition the [TS]

00:11:16   aliens are visiting us to check us out [TS]

00:11:19   the way that we would be doing [TS]

00:11:21   theoretically 200 years from now i love [TS]

00:11:25   it that we're that we're weird the [TS]

00:11:26   indigenous where the indigenous [TS]

00:11:28   life-forms and there's a clever [TS]

00:11:30   scientists except for the clever [TS]

00:11:31   scientists you can't figure out that [TS]

00:11:33   it's time to go [TS]

00:11:34   yeah he's just caught up and in getting [TS]

00:11:36   those plants that they have a prime [TS]

00:11:37   directive of some sort / presumably but [TS]

00:11:40   also i like the fact that these are [TS]

00:11:41   aliens did you get back to the x-files [TS]

00:11:43   point they just want to probe our plants [TS]

00:11:46   not our bodies and that's fine that's [TS]

00:11:49   they're nice they're just looking for [TS]

00:11:51   salad [TS]

00:11:52   yeah that's right hungry a technical [TS]

00:11:55   issue here so that the all the suburban [TS]

00:11:57   stuff is shot in the San Fernando Valley [TS]

00:11:59   in Southern California but the forest [TS]

00:12:01   stuff is shot like it in Mike Northern [TS]

00:12:04   California redwood forest i believe so [TS]

00:12:06   it's a it's a this is a this is sort of [TS]

00:12:08   a suburb that doesn't quite exist where [TS]

00:12:10   there's this kind of amazing forest [TS]

00:12:12   right backing up on the suburb but still [TS]

00:12:14   we see we see down into the suburb into [TS]

00:12:18   essentially the san fernando valley it's [TS]

00:12:19   never specified but that's where they [TS]

00:12:20   shot it where the the alien perhaps is [TS]

00:12:24   going and we see a house populated by a [TS]

00:12:27   bunch of kids there are older boys who [TS]

00:12:30   are playing Dungeons and Dragons and [TS]

00:12:32   there's the younger boy [TS]

00:12:33   Elliot who wants to get in on the action [TS]

00:12:35   there's a lot that goes on in this scene [TS]

00:12:37   there's a lot of dialogue there's the [TS]

00:12:39   there's a whole dnd thing going on [TS]

00:12:42   Elliot trying to get in with the older [TS]

00:12:43   boys that are playing with his brother [TS]

00:12:45   but I wanted to stop and just say it's [TS]

00:12:49   funny in the highest grossing movie of [TS]

00:12:51   all time the places where you find [TS]

00:12:53   influence and like stranger things would [TS]

00:12:58   not exist were it not for this scene [TS]

00:13:00   like this scene is stranger things it's [TS]

00:13:02   the people who made that that movie that [TS]

00:13:04   or that that netflix series said you [TS]

00:13:06   know that scene in ET we're playing [TS]

00:13:07   Dungeons and Dragons what if we did a [TS]

00:13:09   whole show of [TS]

00:13:10   that because that's basically like it's [TS]

00:13:12   all there [TS]

00:13:13   Freaks and Geeks also seriously [TS]

00:13:16   references this scene in ET this is like [TS]

00:13:19   for me this is the the the ground zero [TS]

00:13:21   of you know of a tease [TS]

00:13:25   kids playing and and you know ordering a [TS]

00:13:29   pizza and all that stuff it's all right [TS]

00:13:33   how how much quotes that that scene in [TS]

00:13:38   the house angry and ended it really mean [TS]

00:13:41   that's what we were doing you know i [TS]

00:13:43   remember playing the very brief amount [TS]

00:13:45   of time I play dnd was right around when [TS]

00:13:48   yeah the dnd people must have been very [TS]

00:13:50   happy that there's role-playing [TS]

00:13:52   happening even like the dialogue is a [TS]

00:13:54   little edgier than you'd see in the kids [TS]

00:13:56   movie these days [TS]

00:13:58   oh yeah and they're douchebags thrown [TS]

00:14:00   around a lot of kids movies these [TS]

00:14:01   tickets for penis breath i remember how [TS]

00:14:04   scandalized my mom was at the penis [TS]

00:14:07   breath and in and then immediately [TS]

00:14:09   ensued with a well they did that just [TS]

00:14:13   just to keep it from being rated g and [TS]

00:14:16   it up that that behind it yeah yeah [TS]

00:14:18   those were the words we were using at [TS]

00:14:20   the time I mean it's not it's it's it's [TS]

00:14:22   a tactic [TS]

00:14:23   yeah but my mom didn't like to think [TS]

00:14:25   that that was which case those are our [TS]

00:14:28   16 year old boys doing with 16 year old [TS]

00:14:30   boys do and then there's you know or 15 [TS]

00:14:33   year-old boys whatever and then there's [TS]

00:14:34   you know ten-year-old eleven-year-old [TS]

00:14:37   whatever is somewhere around there [TS]

00:14:38   Elliot who once you know who wants to [TS]

00:14:40   play with the big boys but he's a little [TS]

00:14:43   brother I do think they're trying to get [TS]

00:14:44   across the point that deal Wallace is [TS]

00:14:46   trying to hold it together the breakdown [TS]

00:14:48   of the nuclear family was a big deal [TS]

00:14:51   here as well yeah she'sshe's only she's [TS]

00:14:53   recently separated she's not divorced [TS]

00:14:55   yet yeah it'sit's been recent but that's [TS]

00:14:59   a through line for her and the kids is [TS]

00:15:02   throughout is you know the abandoned the [TS]

00:15:05   abandonment my dad and the the that just [TS]

00:15:09   that the trauma that there really that [TS]

00:15:12   that seems to inform Elliot a little bit [TS]

00:15:16   you know I've got to find somebody to [TS]

00:15:18   take care of here [TS]

00:15:19   it's very clear there's a very personal [TS]

00:15:20   movie for Steven Spielberg his parents [TS]

00:15:22   split up when he was young [TS]

00:15:24   and that that's that's where this is [TS]

00:15:26   coming from like this is this is his [TS]

00:15:29   childhood issues kind of brought into [TS]

00:15:31   this fantasy setting which is kind of a [TS]

00:15:33   classic thing I think to do it is recent [TS]

00:15:37   he's got he the father has run off to [TS]

00:15:38   Mexico with his his new girlfriend he [TS]

00:15:42   doesn't even like Mexico but he went to [TS]

00:15:44   Mexico anyway it's that it's it stuff so [TS]

00:15:47   so yeah she's dead she's trying to do [TS]

00:15:50   well it's trying to hold it together [TS]

00:15:51   they order a pizza which turns out i [TS]

00:15:54   think they're not supposed to do and [TS]

00:15:55   they have Elliot go get the pizza and [TS]

00:15:59   from the delivery driver but on his way [TS]

00:16:02   back with a pizza he thinks there's [TS]

00:16:03   something in the garden shed [TS]

00:16:05   don't-don't-don't there is an alien it's [TS]

00:16:07   really an alien shit [TS]

00:16:09   no it's a raccoon it's a raccoon surely [TS]

00:16:12   there is a raccoon in this moment just [TS]

00:16:13   later and don't call me shirley fit so [TS]

00:16:16   so Elliot is a intrigued he also steps [TS]

00:16:19   on the peets kills me everytime it's a [TS]

00:16:22   god no good one job you had one job but [TS]

00:16:26   it's a bit i think the scene is [TS]

00:16:28   interesting it was so he goes throws the [TS]

00:16:30   ball and then it all comes back flips [TS]

00:16:32   flips out and then again just kind of [TS]

00:16:35   another sign the deal Wallace's is [TS]

00:16:37   barely hanging on the kids all grab [TS]

00:16:39   knives and yes right and then Michael [TS]

00:16:45   said he looks at these tracks that are [TS]

00:16:47   clearly not a coyote [TS]

00:16:49   yes mam the Coyotes are back at that's [TS]

00:16:52   one for the movie i can never understand [TS]

00:16:53   it's not like you'll be tracks it's dark [TS]

00:16:56   and they don't they're not prepared for [TS]

00:16:58   alias it's mostly just scuffs like you [TS]

00:17:01   don't actually see any very clear [TS]

00:17:02   footprints oh yeah yeah but i feel like [TS]

00:17:05   she I think she even says like don't she [TS]

00:17:07   tells them not to do the knives or what [TS]

00:17:09   everything that that's that's the thing [TS]

00:17:11   where I where as an adult I look at it [TS]

00:17:12   and I just feel so bad for her because [TS]

00:17:14   her life is kind of falling apart and [TS]

00:17:15   she's trying to keep it together is that [TS]

00:17:17   in this scene she tells that the boys [TS]

00:17:20   not to do everything they do and they [TS]

00:17:23   just blow right past drives yeah right [TS]

00:17:26   i've seen families like that yes hello [TS]

00:17:29   parent of a fourteen-year-old yeah so [TS]

00:17:32   yeah so so reese's pieces are used as a [TS]

00:17:35   as a guy I an attractor a lower yes yes [TS]

00:17:39   that's my that's one of my favorite [TS]

00:17:41   things just like that is that is perfect [TS]

00:18:00   alternate ending when he's on the table [TS]

00:18:03   at the end of the movie he says he [TS]

00:18:19   manual ET thinks that the logical thing [TS]

00:18:23   to do when the ball is thrown in is to [TS]

00:25:33   startling with the umbrella that et is [TS]

00:25:36   startled and Elliott gets scared so it's [TS]

00:25:39   like they are good very clearly [TS]

00:25:40   connected even if you missed that on [TS]

00:28:19   while he is the younger brother and he [TS]

00:28:21   does get treated like a younger brother [TS]

00:28:23   most of the time he still he still loves [TS]

00:28:25   his older brother [TS]

00:28:26   dance and wants to bring him in on this [TS]

00:28:28   so he does and then of course the older [TS]

00:28:30   brother that the treats him very [TS]

00:28:33   differently after that because oh my god [TS]

00:28:36   yeah it's just do the any of the rest of [TS]

00:28:39   you get a fairytale vibe from this story [TS]

00:29:22   kids are the ones who have the adventure [TS]

00:29:24   not the parents and so the killing off [TS]

00:29:26   the dad they send him to Mexico [TS]

00:41:18   these characters and that is really a [TS]

00:41:21   hallmark of seventies and eighties early [TS]

00:41:22   eighties films that I kind of Miss these [TS]

00:41:25   days I kind of Miss but you know we have [TS]

00:41:28   to have continuous moving and plots and [TS]

00:41:30   explosions and you know i'd like to get [TS]

00:41:33   to know these characters because that's [TS]

00:41:36   you know what the difference between all [TS]

00:41:38   the different aliens with kids movies [TS]

00:41:40   are the characters you know you could [TS]

00:41:42   argue that the plot that there's another [TS]

00:41:45   movie going on that they much more [TS]

00:41:46   conventional movie which is government [TS]

00:41:49   scientists try to find a runaway alien [TS]

00:41:51   on earth [TS]

00:41:52   yes haha and yes ET what we get is [TS]

00:41:55   occasionally we will cut away and see [TS]

00:41:57   that movie is continuing and that's like [TS]

00:41:59   the plot and it's like the kids are are [TS]

00:42:01   playing with their alien friend and [TS]

00:42:03   there's two there's some plot here right [TS]

00:42:05   because they're there they're learning [TS]

00:42:06   but it feels like too much more [TS]

00:42:07   conventional plot is happening somewhere [TS]

00:42:08   else and occasionally we see that it's [TS]

00:42:11   progressing and then eventually at the [TS]

00:42:13   end of the movie it collides with this [TS]

00:42:15   movie and they have to deal with it and [TS]

00:42:17   it's ok for that to happen [TS]

00:42:18   enter to be so oblique because we [TS]

00:42:21   already know have that plot works [TS]

00:42:22   exactly [TS]

00:42:23   we don't we don't have to see it in [TS]

00:42:24   detail and then say the third plot is [TS]

00:42:27   you know a family is trying to get blown [TS]

00:42:29   up families trying to deal with it yeah [TS]

00:42:31   right which-- which you just don't get [TS]

00:42:33   in the kids movie these days I don't [TS]

00:42:36   think you know not really that would [TS]

00:42:37   have been covered [TS]

00:42:38   yeah this is where we learning he's got [TS]

00:43:04   now they put a sheet on him cuz my holes [TS]

00:43:14   mom is just a little too excited little [TS]

00:43:18   to overall emotionally overwrought over [TS]

00:43:20   how cute the kids look in their [TS]

00:43:22   halloween costumes and snap the picture [TS]

00:43:24   and stuns ET immediately [TS]

00:43:28   but this this movie is really good for [TS]

00:43:30   falling over gags seems like the moms a [TS]

00:43:32   little it to me [TS]

00:43:33   sure okay haha Jenna and I do love that [TS]

00:43:37   drew barrymore just getting pissed off [TS]

00:43:39   and pacing anything for them [TS]

00:43:42   yeah and then ET I finally allowed to [TS]

00:43:45   walk out in the world and he sees a [TS]

00:43:48   world where people are dressed in these [TS]

00:43:50   totally weird things and then at one [TS]

00:43:53   point he sees it somebody in Yoda [TS]

00:43:54   costume and thanks haha one of my people [TS]

00:43:56   and it's gonna it's gonna chase after [TS]

00:43:59   Yoda and then they have to kind of like [TS]

00:44:01   steer him away because the golden music [TS]

00:44:03   at that point turns to Yoda's theme from [TS]

00:44:05   Star Wars and john williams world that [TS]

00:44:07   right in its great and that was because [TS]

00:44:09   i remember seeing it like either opening [TS]

00:44:12   weekend or the weekend after and that [TS]

00:44:14   was the hugest react yes i agree movie [TS]

00:44:18   agreed the the room went bananas i [TS]

00:44:22   remember that memories from 1982 it's [TS]

00:44:24   funny yeah Elliot and ETR off on their [TS]

00:44:29   bike on on Elliot's bike they they're [TS]

00:44:32   joined at this point it's their bike in [TS]

00:44:35   order to deploy the the phoning home and [TS]

00:44:39   we see our first instance of flying [TS]

00:44:42   bikes i had forgotten that the flying [TS]

00:44:44   bike happened so early in the film I was [TS]

00:44:46   just remembering the later instance but [TS]

00:44:48   then I just realize it's checkout slide [TS]

00:44:50   like that's right and Elliot is coughing [TS]

00:44:53   this is the this is our first sign that [TS]

00:44:54   eet is getting sick he wakes up and et [TS]

00:44:57   is gone they have to search for him [TS]

00:45:00   Elliot's getting sick Michael finds ET [TS]

00:45:02   this is grim stuff Michael finds eat and [TS]

00:45:05   all kind of gray and and laying in a [TS]

00:45:08   land in the water [TS]

00:45:09   yeah being like snuffled by a raccoon [TS]

00:45:12   what gets with reason there's a raccoon [TS]

00:45:14   yeah the last thing you can't defend [TS]

00:45:15   yourself from raccoons bad man out of it [TS]

00:45:18   i heard the helicopter coming in and I [TS]

00:45:20   was not remembering the movie pretty [TS]

00:45:22   well i was thinking that this would be [TS]

00:45:23   the moment when uh you know the [TS]

00:45:26   the government agents swooped in and [TS]

00:45:29   grab him but it's not quite that grim [TS]

00:45:31   but throughout this movie all the way up [TS]

00:45:35   to this point you know I I feel like [TS]

00:45:37   Elliott and Michael and even greater you [TS]

00:45:41   know they know the kind of movie that [TS]

00:45:43   they're in possibly before they're [TS]

00:45:45   supposed to they they figure I think [TS]

00:45:48   they they they surmise that et is an [TS]

00:45:52   alien they surmise that the government [TS]

00:45:54   agents are going to come in and swoop in [TS]

00:45:56   and pick them up and and all the stores [TS]

00:45:59   the sort of thing they've got to keep [TS]

00:46:01   them away from the adults they don't [TS]

00:46:03   ever consider that no getting an adult [TS]

00:46:05   to help out would be a good idea which [TS]

00:46:08   is very prescient considering what [TS]

00:46:10   happens but that's that's one of the [TS]

00:46:12   things that I have trouble with about [TS]

00:46:14   the movie is that they know which movie [TS]

00:46:17   there in just immediately [TS]

00:46:19   yeah it's so this is a so now the link [TS]

00:46:22   obviously that things start to move [TS]

00:46:23   really fast at this point this is where [TS]

00:46:26   we get weird with were sick I think [TS]

00:46:28   we're dying where Elliot is now [TS]

00:46:31   referring to them as a as a unit and the [TS]

00:46:34   mothers holding the coffee and she just [TS]

00:46:37   lets go and you just she slowly pours it [TS]

00:46:39   out onto the floor [TS]

00:46:41   that's great because my actions smart [TS]

00:46:43   thing and it's so believable that when [TS]

00:46:45   they're getting really sick okay it's [TS]

00:46:46   time to bring mom in on this [TS]

00:46:48   yeah yeah and it and it and of course it [TS]

00:46:51   doesn't work out that well because mom [TS]

00:46:53   is justifiably freaked out about this [TS]

00:46:55   and she wants to protect her kids from [TS]

00:46:58   the scary space alien and then she [TS]

00:47:01   almost immediately discovers that she's [TS]

00:47:04   just as much as at threat and that the [TS]

00:47:07   that's a dangerous situation for [TS]

00:47:09   everybody as well because it's you know [TS]

00:47:12   knock knock astronaut calling yeah okay [TS]

00:47:14   so something alright i love i love it i [TS]

00:47:19   love this movie but here it is [TS]

00:47:22   yeah but this is this is weird and I [TS]

00:47:24   feel almost died not knowing the story [TS]

00:47:27   behind this [TS]

00:47:28   I feel like almost that this was [TS]

00:47:30   somebody's an image somebody had in a [TS]

00:47:34   dream or in a sketch that they made or [TS]

00:47:37   something like that which is like you [TS]

00:47:39   know you open the door [TS]

00:47:40   and there are astronauts standing [TS]

00:47:42   outside because it feels very dreamlike [TS]

00:47:44   and one of the reasons that feels [TS]

00:47:46   dreamlike is it doesn't make any sense [TS]

00:47:48   that people that people would be wearing [TS]

00:47:50   like Apollo astronaut suits and they're [TS]

00:47:53   going through the mini blinds to that [TS]

00:47:55   one got me as a kid I'm like wow yeah [TS]

00:47:57   and not only that but just parked [TS]

00:47:59   walking with arms outstretched I mean [TS]

00:48:01   like a scooby-doo villain [TS]

00:48:03   yeah I mean I i get that they're [TS]

00:48:05   supposed to be like hazmat suit but they [TS]

00:48:07   have has been suits in this movie and [TS]

00:48:09   these are not separate thing [TS]

00:48:11   yeah exactly and it is it's bizarre [TS]

00:48:13   again I I feel like what this is is it's [TS]

00:48:15   it's scary and a weird creepy indelible [TS]

00:48:18   image and all of those things are true [TS]

00:48:20   all of those things are true and yet [TS]

00:48:22   it's sort of weird the evil space aliens [TS]

00:48:25   you know I think that's that that's part [TS]

00:48:27   of the that that's part of the message [TS]

00:48:29   you [TS]

00:48:30   they come in with their NASA patches and [TS]

00:48:31   their big gold advisors but they're the [TS]

00:48:34   scary ones you know they're the aliens [TS]

00:48:37   and the folks inside the house including [TS]

00:48:39   ET or not [TS]

00:48:41   yeah and you get the desired effect but [TS]

00:48:43   the interesting thing is that's it [TS]

00:48:45   I mean that's the only scary because the [TS]

00:48:47   next thing you see there there's got him [TS]

00:48:49   in a hospital bed and they've got a [TS]

00:48:50   bunch of doctors taking care of them and [TS]

00:48:52   it's like they didn't go anywhere with [TS]

00:48:54   that I think for grades just another [TS]

00:48:56   example of sacrificing realism to make [TS]

00:48:59   something that looks cool [TS]

00:49:00   yeah and amp up the drama i wrote down [TS]

00:49:02   fun image but why it's like that it's [TS]

00:49:06   like it is a fun image and that's what [TS]

00:49:08   and you know what [TS]

00:49:09   it's a great image and I remember it i [TS]

00:49:12   will say this I'll give him the movie [TS]

00:49:13   credit the movie never tries to do like [TS]

00:49:16   a lot of work to explain that image it [TS]

00:49:18   just moves on which is good because i [TS]

00:49:21   would say a lesser movie would build all [TS]

00:49:23   sorts of dialogue about why it was the [TS]

00:49:26   way it was and things like that it's [TS]

00:49:28   like now just do not know forget it you [TS]

00:49:30   saw it we we moved on and now we're in a [TS]

00:49:33   hospital setup and the people have some [TS]

00:49:35   some like hospital gowns and hazmat [TS]

00:49:37   suits and no nobody is an Apollo [TS]

00:49:40   astronaut anymore I mean if you want to [TS]

00:49:42   go for the magic realism [TS]

00:49:43   and the dreamlike logic I mean for the [TS]

00:49:47   characters in the house yet it it just [TS]

00:49:49   something totally scary is happening and [TS]

00:49:51   they don't understand what's going on [TS]

00:49:53   okay sure but as as a movie that we are [TS]

00:49:57   watching it's like oh right yeah you [TS]

00:49:59   could definitely argue that it's like [TS]

00:50:01   from their perspective it is this then [TS]

00:50:02   their people then people showed up at [TS]

00:50:04   the door wearing these crazy suits and [TS]

00:50:06   they were everywhere and we were [TS]

00:50:08   freaking out right and this is a this is [TS]

00:50:10   an illustration of that even though they [TS]

00:50:12   were really hazmat suits and make they [TS]

00:50:14   were coming through the blinds but it [TS]

00:50:16   felt like that and that's and the movies [TS]

00:50:18   trying to get across that feeling [TS]

00:50:19   it's just that it's just stopped me cold [TS]

00:50:21   every time when it's like mad bass been [TS]

00:50:25   it then it goes even further and the [TS]

00:50:27   house gets a gets given the breaking bad [TS]

00:50:30   treatment interest rate gets tented [TS]

00:50:33   everybody's got everybody's bringing [TS]

00:50:35   their oxygen with them for a longer time [TS]

00:50:38   yeah and and you know the point is this [TS]

00:50:41   is not your house anymore you this is [TS]

00:50:43   not your home anymore it we we are [TS]

00:50:46   taking it over because this thing that [TS]

00:50:48   you have is so scary and unknown keys [TS]

00:50:53   sees this as an opportunity to learn [TS]

00:50:57   yes but everybody else is following it [TS]

00:51:00   everybody still follow following the the [TS]

00:51:02   government bureaucracy military model [TS]

00:51:04   here of take it take control of the [TS]

00:51:07   situation take charge and fear and fear [TS]

00:51:12   curious and enthusiastic and the [TS]

00:51:14   grown-ups are afraid [TS]

00:51:16   yeah i was actually perfectly fine with [TS]

00:51:18   them tending the house and stuff I mean [TS]

00:51:20   that seems like a logical thing to do [TS]

00:51:22   do you have you know if possible really [TS]

00:51:24   make sense from another planet that the [TS]

00:51:26   thing that got me was how quick they [TS]

00:51:29   were to just discard that like inside [TS]

00:51:32   yeah you know after after et's dead [TS]

00:51:34   suddenly everybody's taking off all [TS]

00:51:36   their masks he could be worse after he's [TS]

00:51:38   dead you don't know anything about him [TS]

00:51:39   to explode and release boards that turn [TS]

00:51:43   you into an ETA for all you know you [TS]

00:51:45   have no ec2 even then he would be the [TS]

00:51:48   real monster there you go [TS]

00:51:49   that won't happen if they fed him after [TS]

00:51:51   midnight yeah Peter Coyote gets to talk [TS]

00:51:52   now he we've been seeing him do a lot of [TS]

00:51:54   him acting basically [TS]

00:51:57   haha really but frankly acting but uh [TS]

00:52:00   but we get to hear Peter Coyote who is [TS]

00:52:03   it's fun [TS]

00:52:04   he's a fun actor and he he says Elliot [TS]

00:52:16   at the same time you get the sense that [TS]

00:52:21   we begin to appreciate a little bit more [TS]

00:52:30   yeah it's okay to talk to me exact he's [TS]

00:52:32   one of us just to a certain extent right [TS]

00:52:35   yeah yeah he still grown-up who has a [TS]

00:52:37   job to do but he at least empathize and [TS]

00:52:39   lots of doors unlock and I thought that [TS]

00:52:41   was just a really good bit of acting by [TS]

00:52:44   henry thomas that the kid playing Elliot [TS]

00:52:46   at that part of that he was that really [TS]

00:52:49   stands up forget every time it has to [TS]

00:52:51   have to carry a whole lot of this movie [TS]

00:52:56   does a pretty darn good job [TS]

00:52:57   he's one of the reasons this movie is a [TS]

00:52:59   success he was he was 11 when this movie [TS]

00:53:05   shot it and he does a pretty amazing job [TS]

00:53:17   think that Henry Thomas is spent I mean [TS]

00:53:42   keep showing their charts and they're [TS]

00:53:43   both getting more and more sick and then [TS]

00:53:49   diverge from one another and he said you [TS]

00:53:52   know he and and so suddenly Elliot any t [TS]

00:53:55   have set have separated and Elliot is [TS]

00:53:58   sort of shouting and at you can as a as [TS]

00:58:39   one person's heart lights up all of [TS]

00:58:41   their hearts light up and that's how do [TS]

01:01:54   know you just trying to escape your kids [TS]

01:12:49   where that comes from you we recently [TS]

01:12:51   reviewed a significantly lesser movie [TS]

01:12:54   called Batman Returns that was very very [TS]

01:12:58   bright in my memory for something I [TS]

01:13:00   thought it was fascinating and weird and [TS]

01:13:02   edgy and all the stuff that was it i'm [TS]

01:13:04   having a similar moment of let down with [TS]

01:13:07   ET for some reason I can't really put my [TS]

01:13:09   finger on it other than [TS]

01:13:11   all of the other big movies in the big [TS]

01:13:14   franchises of the late seventies and [TS]

01:13:16   early eighties for some reason I feel [TS]

01:13:20   like they stuck around a little bit [TS]

01:13:21   longer and I felt compelled to keep [TS]

01:13:24   checking in with him [TS]

01:13:25   ET was a one-off and it left me behind [TS]

01:13:28   and on and and i'm just not sure do you [TS]

01:13:32   how how big does it still hold all flat [TS]

01:13:36   how big a place doesn't still hold in [TS]

01:13:38   current pop culture is it a period piece [TS]

01:13:40   is it nostalgia or is it still ET the [TS]

01:13:44   big blockbuster that we all still [TS]

01:13:46   remember fondly well let my kids both [TS]

01:13:49   saw in school the first time I didn't [TS]

01:13:53   even know I was like wait wait you saw [TS]

01:13:56   it in school because my wife and I said [TS]

01:13:59   we should we should see if they want to [TS]

01:14:00   see et they've never seen ET well they [TS]

01:14:02   both seen it and and over the course of [TS]

01:14:06   several days it was one of those time [TS]

01:14:07   killer things in school and that's [TS]

01:14:11   really not the best way to an experience [TS]

01:14:13   in the movie and you know and and so [TS]

01:14:16   they like it they liked it when we [TS]

01:14:18   watched it again and you know I I can't [TS]

01:14:22   help but think like the first time I [TS]

01:14:24   showed them star trek the wrath of khan [TS]

01:14:26   i even knowing that there were more [TS]

01:14:29   films with Spock later my son my older [TS]

01:14:34   son really had no idea what was coming [TS]

01:14:36   and so when Spock dies at the end it's [TS]

01:14:39   like oh my god and he had been [TS]

01:14:42   shattering all through the movie and he [TS]

01:14:43   just went dead silent for the rest of [TS]

01:14:45   the movie i really want to kind of you [TS]

01:14:48   know now that it's been a little time [TS]

01:14:49   since they saw it I kind of want to sit [TS]

01:14:53   down and turn out all the lights and [TS]

01:14:55   turn off all the devices and just say [TS]

01:14:56   let's just watch this and experience it [TS]

01:14:59   and see what happens but i know that the [TS]

01:15:02   whole generation of kids at least in [TS]

01:15:05   their school for them it's a movie that [TS]

01:15:07   kills time at school and that's kind of [TS]

01:15:09   depressing at the might get my kids are [TS]

01:15:12   older now and they've died already told [TS]

01:15:14   the story about them seen many years ago [TS]

01:15:15   but my my sister-in-law has two kids a [TS]

01:15:18   five and seven and we watched it [TS]

01:15:22   together and they had never seen it [TS]

01:15:23   before and I will [TS]

01:15:24   super curious to see how they liked it [TS]

01:15:27   the seven-year-old girl was completely [TS]

01:15:29   in I mean from the very beginning feet [TS]

01:15:31   she really enjoyed it she wasn't talking [TS]

01:15:33   she was watching during the part where [TS]

01:15:37   he's dying she like scooted in next to [TS]

01:15:40   me you know she wanted to be close but [TS]

01:15:43   the but the five-year-old he did you [TS]

01:15:46   just didn't care at all and I feel like [TS]

01:15:48   maybe this is the grumpy old man but you [TS]

01:15:50   know a lot of like you know kids [TS]

01:15:51   animation style movies today are a lot [TS]

01:15:54   of like an old fart jokes and like gags [TS]

01:15:56   and it just didn't feel like this movie [TS]

01:15:58   resonated with him at all but i think he [TS]

01:16:00   might have been too young to for to [TS]

01:16:02   resonate with him [TS]

01:16:03   yeah I have no idea how it how it lands [TS]

01:16:05   with kids at all these days but I know [TS]

01:16:07   for me kind of like it was with you chip [TS]

01:16:09   it i didn't check in with it at all and [TS]

01:16:11   I found it I found it enjoyable film to [TS]

01:16:13   watch I think maybe I'm still you know [TS]

01:16:15   Snoopy enough and an emotional enough to [TS]

01:16:17   to have all of those those cute sweet [TS]

01:16:19   scenes resonate with me enough to enjoy [TS]

01:16:21   I don't see myself going back to watch [TS]

01:16:23   it again it was just it was it was a [TS]

01:16:26   fine movie I i think it was very [TS]

01:16:28   well-crafted and I can see how it if if [TS]

01:16:31   i had seen it at the right time or the [TS]

01:16:33   right age and watch the beginning again [TS]

01:16:34   that this this would totally have been a [TS]

01:16:36   movie that I would have returned to [TS]

01:16:38   again and again is that didn't happen [TS]

01:16:40   that way and I don't think that it's i [TS]

01:16:43   don't i don't know that it's as well [TS]

01:16:45   known in you know the cultural zeitgeist [TS]

01:16:47   is it used to be i mean that's that's [TS]

01:16:50   going to happen but it's i feel like i [TS]

01:16:53   used to see a lot more references to it [TS]

01:16:55   in pop culture and that is is fading out [TS]

01:16:58   a little bit so I mean unless some sort [TS]

01:17:01   of big ET revival happens i would not be [TS]

01:17:04   surprised if as the years pass he [TS]

01:17:07   teaches sort of fades away [TS]

01:17:09   I feel like it's a club it's a classical [TS]

01:17:11   movie and will always be considered that [TS]

01:17:13   it is right i think it has reached [TS]

01:17:15   classic status i think what it is nice [TS]

01:17:59   will be remembered but it's not going to [TS]

01:18:05   raiders of the lost ark where they [TS]

01:18:07   became the blockbuster movie franchises [TS]

01:18:10   yeah it's a largely quiet fairytale kind [TS]

01:18:19   looms large on Steven Spielberg's [TS]

01:18:24   who is who is still making movies 69 he [TS]

01:18:28   still making movies but he is it safe to [TS]

01:18:31   say going to be recognized as one of the [TS]

01:18:33   towering directors of all-time and this [TS]

01:18:36   is one of his very best films and will [TS]

01:18:40   remain so so i think on that level it [TS]

01:18:42   will also be remembered but it's not in [TS]

01:18:44   the same category as movies that you [TS]

01:18:49   personal and it's sweet and it's fairy [TS]

01:19:53   all of the back pass between Steven [TS]

01:19:56   Spielberg and George Lucas really coming [TS]

01:19:58   out here but i was looking back into my [TS]

01:20:03   childhood I was looking into 1982 and it [TS]

01:20:06   looked authentic absolutely authentic [TS]

01:20:08   and that that is a gift for this movie I [TS]

01:20:12   think and just like it does not [TS]

01:20:14   it's not like a Stepford portrayal of [TS]

01:20:17   the suburbs rain right grown-up thing I [TS]

01:20:19   mean [TS]

01:20:19   Oh on Halloween when I grew up things [TS]

01:20:21   were rough on halloween night me when [TS]

01:20:23   you went out you had eggs and there was [TS]

01:20:26   stuff going on [TS]

01:20:26   I mean it's so much more milk toes now [TS]

01:20:28   at least where i live compared to where [TS]

01:20:31   I gave up and you know penis breath and [TS]

01:20:34   all that's I mean that's just kind of [TS]

01:20:35   the way of the world then and and you [TS]

01:20:38   know you didn't have GPS on your kids [TS]

01:20:40   and get all the stuff you know and and [TS]

01:20:43   so that's one of the reasons why i know [TS]

01:20:44   i'm nostalgic for now and i enjoy [TS]

01:20:46   because it reminds me of a different [TS]

01:20:47   phase of my life but but it is it is [TS]

01:20:50   wonderful that that it is there the [TS]

01:20:53   events go kind of magic realist but uh [TS]

01:20:56   but he really he really strives for [TS]

01:21:00   civility grounds it and and when it when [TS]

01:21:02   it's grounded and windy other other [TS]

01:21:05   movies off the time didn't pay as much [TS]

01:21:08   attention to where they were there was [TS]

01:21:10   set dressing but he's actually exploring [TS]

01:21:12   this is the pop culture of the time [TS]

01:21:14   these the Star Wars toys here's the [TS]

01:21:16   dungeons and dragons here's that [TS]

01:21:18   commercial and when you do a good job of [TS]

01:21:21   grounding it in a time then you [TS]

01:21:25   inevitably create a time capsule and [TS]

01:21:27   there are other contemporary movies that [TS]

01:21:30   just are not this one does it if you're [TS]

01:21:33   of age that you grew up in this late [TS]

01:21:35   seventies early eighties and you haven't [TS]

01:21:38   seen this moving in while you owe it to [TS]

01:21:39   yourself to just just watch it once [TS]

01:21:41   because it is so fun especially for [TS]

01:21:43   someone that lived through that area now [TS]

01:21:45   even though it didn't strike me [TS]

01:21:46   emotionally [TS]

01:21:48   uh the way it does you David it it did [TS]

01:21:51   it I am grateful that I got that I [TS]

01:21:54   rewatched it just to sort of reconnect [TS]

01:21:56   who i was back then huh [TS]

01:21:58   back when ship had a heart mmhmm yeah it [TS]
