00:03:35 ◼   ► is for kids and watching Star Trek on TV [TS]

00:03:37 ◼   ► for kids all of this is the silly stuff [TS]

00:03:39 ◼   ► that you do as a kid and at some point [TS]

00:03:41 ◼   ► you grow up and that stuff isn't for you [TS]

00:03:45 ◼   ► anymore and you become an adult and it's [TS]

00:03:47 ◼   ► time to put away the childish things and [TS]

00:03:49 ◼   ► move on and do adult things and so what [TS]

00:03:53 ◼   ► I wanted to talk about here a little bit [TS]

00:05:30 ◼   ► put away the toys because your parents [TS]

00:05:31 ◼   ► your parents liked this stuff to show [TS]

00:05:34 ◼   ► you always sort of model that this is [TS]

00:05:36 ◼   ► something that's perfectly fine for [TS]

00:05:37 ◼   ► adults exactly you never feel do not go [TS]

00:05:40 ◼   ► off to college and feel some pressure to [TS]

00:05:41 ◼   ► like I shouldn't like these things [TS]

00:05:43 ◼   ► anymore i should i should drop these [TS]

00:05:45 ◼   ► habits for things that are going to be [TS]

00:05:46 ◼   ► more you know marketable and approved by [TS]

00:05:49 ◼   ► others and considered to be grown-up [TS]

00:05:52 ◼   ► things so here's the problem when you [TS]

00:05:54 ◼   ► grow up in a house it's full of [TS]

00:05:56 ◼   ► musicians and then you go to high school [TS]

00:05:58 ◼   ► for theater and experimental theater and [TS]

00:06:02 ◼   ► then you go to college for experimental [TS]

00:06:04 ◼   ► theater never have to grow up forever [TS]

00:06:06 ◼   ► when you spend I mean my thesis was on [TS]

00:07:30 ◼   ► of you know video games or movies or [TS]

00:07:33 ◼   ► books or whatever what have you and I I [TS]

00:07:38 ◼   ► I mean maybe I'm younger than everyone [TS]

00:07:40 ◼   ► you had your pan how did you escape have [TS]

00:07:42 ◼   ► you do today as a as somebody in their [TS]

00:07:44 ◼   ► twenties who who moved to another city [TS]

00:07:46 ◼   ► and and has met other people and got [TS]

00:07:48 ◼   ► involved with other things have you run [TS]

00:07:49 ◼   ► into people now in your life who look at [TS]

00:08:35 ◼   ► school but like I had a core group of [TS]

00:08:36 ◼   ► friends who were all really nerdy and [TS]

00:08:38 ◼   ► all into the same things as us and we in [TS]

00:08:41 ◼   ► some to a certain extent there was like [TS]

00:08:42 ◼   ► safety in numbers like we could all hang [TS]

00:08:44 ◼   ► out and talk about is your only the [TS]

00:08:45 ◼   ► other people the popular people like [TS]

00:08:46 ◼   ► don't talk to them with jockstrap is [TS]

00:08:48 ◼   ► already got the beginner that's right [TS]

00:08:51 ◼   ► but like I have the opposite experience [TS]

00:08:52 ◼   ► for you in that my dad to this day has [TS]

00:08:55 ◼   ► no interest in anything even kind of [TS]

00:08:58 ◼   ► vaguely nerdy related [TS]

00:08:59 ◼   ► that's not true your dad's into baseball [TS]

00:09:01 ◼   ► and he's into like I mean there it's a [TS]

00:09:02 ◼   ► different kind of nerd but I mean like [TS]

00:09:04 ◼   ► I'm completely different kind of short [TS]

00:09:05 ◼   ► but what I'm saying specifically I'm [TS]

00:09:07 ◼   ► saying in the like fantasy science [TS]

00:09:09 ◼   ► fiction where all the stuff like that [TS]

00:09:10 ◼   ► kind of thing video that we talking [TS]

00:09:12 ◼   ► about like he has no interest in in [TS]

00:09:14 ◼   ► almost any of that like most i ever got [TS]

00:09:17 ◼   ► to play date games way that was like [TS]

00:09:18 ◼   ► scrabble and trivial pursuit and it's [TS]

00:09:22 ◼   ► you know he really had no internet my [TS]

00:09:24 ◼   ► mother is a little bit i think she's in [TS]

00:09:26 ◼   ► some ways more like a closet like geek [TS]

00:09:28 ◼   ► in that way because she definitely but [TS]

00:09:32 ◼   ► you can't reveal it to her husband right [TS]

00:09:34 ◼   ► now but like I should definitely read I [TS]

00:09:36 ◼   ► I definitely read fantasy books that she [TS]

00:09:38 ◼   ► gave me and my her sister especially and [TS]

00:09:41 ◼   ► all my cousins on that side [TS]

00:09:43 ◼   ► we're also really into a lot of this [TS]

00:09:44 ◼   ► stuff because i remember always watching [TS]

00:09:46 ◼   ► star wars like one of my earliest [TS]

00:09:47 ◼   ► memories watching star wars with that [TS]

00:09:49 ◼   ► and I remember that my aunt always [TS]

00:09:51 ◼   ► a flight like these fans fantasy sort of [TS]

00:09:54 ◼   ► young adult fantasy books for me to read [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► i would like borrow from our library [TS]

00:09:56 ◼   ► whatever's out there these Edward eager [TS]

00:09:58 ◼   ► for example or even as bit that kind of [TS]

00:10:01 ◼   ► stuff to sort of fantastic children's [TS]

00:10:03 ◼   ► novels of the like fifties and sixties [TS]

00:10:05 ◼   ► and I kind of grew up reading a bunch of [TS]

00:10:07 ◼   ► that stuff and and for me growing up [TS]

00:10:09 ◼   ► more than anything it was about books i [TS]

00:10:12 ◼   ► read its read constantly like there's a [TS]

00:10:14 ◼   ► in sixth grade you know when they were [TS]

00:10:16 ◼   ► like doing a slideshow with our like [TS]

00:10:17 ◼   ► sixth-grade graduation from elementary [TS]

00:10:19 ◼   ► school and they had like pictures of [TS]

00:10:21 ◼   ► people doing like you know things your I [TS]

00:10:22 ◼   ► was like me sitting at a desk reading a [TS]

00:10:24 ◼   ► book and I was like read books sometimes [TS]

00:10:26 ◼   ► during classes that's not supposed to [TS]

00:10:28 ◼   ► read reading books during but it was [TS]

00:10:29 ◼   ► like constantly I was always reading [TS]

00:10:31 ◼   ► something and i was reading tons and [TS]

00:10:33 ◼   ► tons of science fiction/fantasy at that [TS]

00:10:35 ◼   ► point and I think my mother kept you [TS]

00:10:37 ◼   ► know tried to make sure i read other [TS]

00:10:40 ◼   ► stuff like so I could you know sort of [TS]

00:10:42 ◼   ► more well-rounded but well that worked [TS]

00:10:45 ◼   ► out [TS]

00:10:46 ◼   ► I mean I did but I gravitate i [TS]

00:10:47 ◼   ► constantly gravitated back to that and [TS]

00:10:50 ◼   ► so it did provide and I had friends in [TS]

00:10:53 ◼   ► elementary school and you know again you [TS]

00:10:56 ◼   ► were all as kids you're all kind of into [TS]

00:10:58 ◼   ► certain aspects of that but I felt like [TS]

00:11:00 ◼   ► I didn't necessarily like bond with [TS]

00:11:02 ◼   ► anybody over it was just expected and so [TS]

00:11:04 ◼   ► it wasn't until I got to middle school [TS]

00:11:06 ◼   ► that I've met a lot of other people who [TS]

00:11:07 ◼   ► were really into the same thing and we [TS]

00:11:09 ◼   ► were you know playing playing D&D and we [TS]

00:11:12 ◼   ► were playing you know magic later on and [TS]

00:11:15 ◼   ► we were going biking to the comic book [TS]

00:11:17 ◼   ► store and talking about you know sci-fi [TS]

00:11:19 ◼   ► movies and all this stuff we made it we [TS]

00:11:21 ◼   ► made role-playing games and we founded [TS]

00:11:24 ◼   ► clubs like we basically took over a [TS]

00:11:26 ◼   ► games club and turn it into like a club [TS]

00:11:28 ◼   ► where we could play all sorts of like [TS]

00:11:30 ◼   ► rpgs and I you sure you're your child [TS]

00:11:32 ◼   ► what I wasn't like a John Waters movie [TS]

00:11:34 ◼   ► or something because i think it was like [TS]

00:11:35 ◼   ► a simulation in the computer and [TS]

00:11:38 ◼   ► actually it was it doesn't sound real [TS]

00:11:40 ◼   ► some terrible Eugene but it is mine for [TS]

00:11:42 ◼   ► me I was a matrix-matrix always unusual [TS]

00:11:45 ◼   ► and I understand that but like it was [TS]

00:11:46 ◼   ► for me it was a big part of embracing [TS]

00:11:50 ◼   ► that and never feeling never having to [TS]

00:11:52 ◼   ► feel ashamed of that you didn't learn [TS]

00:11:53 ◼   ► shame correctly and molecular change [TS]

00:11:55 ◼   ► trust me when i say looking for other [TS]

00:11:56 ◼   ► things but not not for that [TS]

00:12:02 ◼   ► down upon that and I think natural [TS]

00:12:08 ◼   ► really really valued and academic [TS]

00:12:11 ◼   ► achievement was sort of a big thing in [TS]

00:12:13 ◼   ► the way that athletics for example by [TS]

00:12:15 ◼   ► comparison was not as big in a city [TS]

00:12:17 ◼   ► named for one of the most famous [TS]

00:12:19 ◼   ► scientist that's you basically lives in [TS]

00:12:22 ◼   ► Utopia and and the the world's first PDF [TS]

00:12:24 ◼   ► but I was gonna ask me I was gonna ask [TS]

00:12:27 ◼   ► if it's a generational thing in some [TS]

00:12:28 ◼   ► ways in that like what [TS]

00:12:30 ◼   ► speaking of my father I know that as a [TS]

00:12:32 ◼   ► as a kid he read things like comic books [TS]

00:12:35 ◼   ► and stuff like that because it was again [TS]

00:12:38 ◼   ► expected or it was what you gave kids or [TS]

00:12:41 ◼   ► you know is what they were supposed to [TS]

00:12:42 ◼   ► an interesting but he clearly didn't [TS]

00:12:44 ◼   ► outgrow that because he really doesn't [TS]

00:12:46 ◼   ► have interest but i always wonder if [TS]

00:12:47 ◼   ► there's like a generational thing where [TS]

00:12:49 ◼   ► that was not in his the the area he was [TS]

00:12:51 ◼   ► growing up in that was not allowed or or [TS]

00:12:55 ◼   ► like you know there was no application [TS]

00:12:58 ◼   ► for that in a way that today it feels as [TS]

00:13:01 ◼   ► though it's a lot easier to grow up in a [TS]

00:13:03 ◼   ► society where that's acceptable and i [TS]

00:13:05 ◼   ► can give you I can give you one reason [TS]

00:13:06 ◼   ► actually the more I think about like my [TS]

00:13:08 ◼   ► childhood and where that whence the [TS]

00:13:10 ◼   ► internet are ya that I mean the fact [TS]

00:13:12 ◼   ► that you know like I had a really [TS]

00:13:14 ◼   ► terrible childhood went to the internet [TS]

00:13:16 ◼   ► folks [TS]

00:13:17 ◼   ► yes my child by adolescent well hope you [TS]

00:13:20 ◼   ► will find a one-day BBS is right like [TS]

00:13:23 ◼   ► the very first thing that I remember [TS]

00:13:24 ◼   ► doing when I got on a computer to talk [TS]

00:13:27 ◼   ► to other people [TS]

00:13:28 ◼   ► was that my dad had worked his celtic [TS]

00:13:30 ◼   ► connections to get me a pen pal for go [TS]

00:13:32 ◼   ► straighter like we were talking about [TS]

00:13:34 ◼   ► the silly PBS show with some kid in [TS]

00:13:37 ◼   ► arizona and i don't like I don't know [TS]

00:13:39 ◼   ► this kid and I haven't talked to him in [TS]

00:13:40 ◼   ► like 20 odd years but it was still the [TS]

00:13:44 ◼   ► fact that like oh wait you mean people [TS]

00:13:47 ◼   ► other than me like this show somewhere [TS]

00:13:49 ◼   ► else and then I was given pretty much [TS]

00:13:51 ◼   ► probably horrifying to most of the [TS]

00:13:54 ◼   ► parents in the room uh unrestricted [TS]

00:13:57 ◼   ► internet access from you know h7 onward [TS]

00:14:01 ◼   ► like I i was in chat rooms and I was my [TS]

00:14:03 ◼   ► dad was just he gave me a very quick [TS]

00:14:05 ◼   ► talk on the beginning and like we [TS]

00:14:07 ◼   ► started using the computer basically [TS]

00:14:08 ◼   ► like don't do stupid things and don't [TS]

00:14:10 ◼   ► reveal your real age [TS]

00:14:12 ◼   ► and I thought of that is ok i'll just [TS]

00:14:13 ◼   ► play a twenty-four-year-old so anywhere [TS]

00:14:16 ◼   ► I when I was just like I was cat I was a [TS]

00:17:22 ◼   ► learned about dnd he introduced me to [TS]

00:17:24 ◼   ► magic and I just introduced to all of my [TS]

00:17:26 ◼   ► friends to it and he would always like I [TS]

00:17:28 ◼   ► would go up and visit and he would like [TS]

00:17:29 ◼   ► take me to the role-playing store [TS]

00:17:31 ◼   ► because like a long time I like [TS]

00:17:32 ◼   ► collected like little red managers [TS]

00:17:34 ◼   ► apartment [TS]

00:17:35 ◼   ► yeah exactly i a ton of those and so but [TS]

00:17:37 ◼   ► like he was an adult and I mean at that [TS]

00:17:40 ◼   ► point he was probably you know he must [TS]

00:17:41 ◼   ► have been in his 20 like early twenties [TS]

00:17:43 ◼   ► or something but there's an [TS]

00:17:44 ◼   ► eight-year-old or whatever he was an [TS]

00:17:45 ◼   ► adult right and and he would take me [TS]

00:17:48 ◼   ► like he would validate this right like [TS]

00:17:50 ◼   ► he was in a successful adult he was a [TS]

00:17:51 ◼   ► teacher and you know he was into the [TS]

00:17:54 ◼   ► stuff and he is a person who doesn't [TS]

00:17:56 ◼   ► feel any he's a very outspoken guy and [TS]

00:18:00 ◼   ► he is a very like I who is in no way [TS]

00:18:02 ◼   ► feels embarrassed about any of the [TS]

00:18:03 ◼   ► hobbies he does and that to me was a [TS]

00:18:06 ◼   ► very positive role model to have to look [TS]

00:18:08 ◼   ► up to be like you can be a functional [TS]

00:18:10 ◼   ► successful adult and still be interested [TS]

00:18:12 ◼   ► in these things that I don't have to [TS]

00:18:13 ◼   ► deny myself from liking these now I [TS]

00:18:15 ◼   ► didn't have the internet and I didn't [TS]

00:18:17 ◼   ► have those examples but i feel like i'm [TS]

00:18:18 ◼   ► trying to think of what made me hold on [TS]

00:18:20 ◼   ► to things and in capacity drop part of [TS]

00:18:23 ◼   ► that is like maybe you can hold two [TS]

00:18:24 ◼   ► nasty like screw everybody else I'm [TS]

00:18:26 ◼   ► gonna be bitter and hate the world and [TS]

00:18:27 ◼   ► become kind of like you can you can be a [TS]

00:18:29 ◼   ► self-hating nerd and you put me the [TS]

00:18:31 ◼   ► stuff behind and pretend it was never [TS]

00:18:32 ◼   ► you you can be the screw the whole world [TS]

00:18:34 ◼   ► i may be alone but I'm right [TS]

00:18:35 ◼   ► whatever but your chest yeah but but [TS]

00:18:40 ◼   ► things that I held onto were because [TS]

00:18:51 ◼   ► enough in adult connection you can see [TS]

00:18:54 ◼   ► you guys don't know but like something [TS]

00:18:56 ◼   ► we're gonna rule the world and whatever [TS]

00:18:58 ◼   ► because computers so important there was [TS]

00:18:59 ◼   ► a little bit of a connection that was [TS]

00:19:00 ◼   ► like well adults are into computers too [TS]

00:19:02 ◼   ► but it's not the thing to be into in [TS]

00:20:57 ◼   ► that was unifying but it was also not [TS]

00:20:58 ◼   ► special but I never felt the same kind [TS]

00:21:04 ◼   ► kids who like comics and there are a [TS]

00:21:05 ◼   ► couple kids are like science fiction but [TS]

00:38:25 ◼   ► opportunities to do these things I never [TS]

00:38:27 ◼   ► felt the pressure to leave the stuff [TS]

00:38:31 ◼   ► it's because i felt like i was on a [TS]

00:38:32 ◼   ► mission I felt like we're going to use [TS]
