00:01:17   movies against our will it is Philip [TS]

00:01:19   Michaels hello I'm just filling out my [TS]

00:01:21   bingo cart because I literally said when [TS]

00:01:24   the Nick character appeared and kiss me [TS]

00:01:26   deadly Steve's gonna make a comment [TS]

00:01:29   about here i have a whole series of [TS]

00:01:32   comments that i was going to make about [TS]

00:01:34   Nick to what I side that is being said [TS]

00:01:37   in la the first thing I thought is [TS]

00:01:38   that's not Spanish what is he saying in [TS]

00:01:42   his totally fake dialogue is literally a [TS]

00:01:44   section of of my notes about 17 lines [TS]

00:01:48   along this just vavavoom home people you [TS]

00:01:51   how so [TS]

00:01:53   um we should say we watched two movies [TS]

00:01:55   they're both Fillmore's we watch kiss me [TS]

00:01:57   deadly and out of the past [TS]

00:01:59   yes filled you want to explain a little [TS]

00:02:01   bit about why you picked these movies [TS]

00:02:02   why God why would you do that [TS]

00:02:05   well um i was gonna send kind of like [TS]

00:02:08   these movies Jason but now you make me [TS]

00:02:10   feel good no no I know about the last [TS]

00:02:13   time we are we can be in the old movie [TS]

00:02:15   club i was forced against my will by the [TS]

00:02:17   powers of democracy to do a couple who [TS]

00:02:19   these that I don't really care for well [TS]

00:02:21   so this time I am i turn the old movie [TS]

00:02:24   club into the benevolent dictatorship [TS]

00:02:27   that it was born to be and pick stuff [TS]

00:02:30   that I like and I am I i love detective [TS]

00:02:34   movies i i i really enjoy movies where [TS]

00:02:37   there's that the pretense of a mystery [TS]

00:02:42   but mostly it's just about the detective [TS]

00:02:43   going around and some slapping people [TS]

00:02:46   around ya himself getting slapped around [TS]

00:02:48   in the process never got that from [TS]

00:02:50   tennis and boy do these movies offer [TS]

00:02:54   that plenty of slapping to yeah yeah I [TS]

00:03:00   believe that was the original title of [TS]

00:03:02   miss you daddy was Mickey Spillane [TS]

00:03:04   plenty of slapping yeah [TS]

00:03:07   slap me hardly so shall we start the [TS]

00:03:09   show we start with kiss me deadly let's [TS]

00:03:12   let's is what's that one first okay i [TS]

00:03:15   just finished watching that the way God [TS]

00:03:18   intended it to be seen which is on my [TS]

00:03:20   phone on youtube without that was [TS]

00:03:23   graceful I watched it on an iPad needs [TS]

00:03:25   to slap to just now I switch to a TV [TS]

00:03:28   about a third of the way through because [TS]

00:03:30   i thought this is ridiculous and then i [TS]

00:03:31   also watched it on YouTube but did watch [TS]

00:03:34   it on a TV yeah I watched it on my [TS]

00:03:36   appletv well there you go i watch it on [TS]

00:03:39   netflix DVD and i'm glad i did because [TS]

00:03:41   then I could take the DVD out look at it [TS]

00:03:44   and realize I really watch that movie so [TS]

00:03:48   kids kiss me deadly based on Mickey [TS]

00:03:50   Spillane novel kiss me comma deadly mhm [TS]

00:03:54   i missed the comma they remove the comma [TS]

00:03:56   from when they adapted the movie they [TS]

00:03:58   settled at commons gotta go [TS]

00:03:59   that's what happened to it doesn't [TS]

00:04:01   translate well the film now so a little [TS]

00:04:05   bit of background on how i came across [TS]

00:04:07   this movie I watched it many many years [TS]

00:04:09   ago I was as home alone at night I i [TS]

00:04:12   said hey it's a detective movie it's a [TS]

00:04:14   film noir I like those and uh watched it [TS]

00:04:18   and dear god the ending and I am I don't [TS]

00:04:23   wanna I don't want to put the cart [TS]

00:04:25   before the horse here but that the [TS]

00:04:27   ending is a little bit disturbing when [TS]

00:04:30   you're home alone it at that [TS]

00:04:32   uh I'm friday night at after midnight [TS]

00:04:35   and that's the last image you see before [TS]

00:04:37   bed nine and as it turns out i had [TS]

00:04:41   actually seen the I that there's an [TS]

00:04:43   edited version of the movie short yeah [TS]

00:04:45   after it came out but they they cropped [TS]

00:04:48   the ending so that significant chunks [TS]

00:04:50   are missing that make you think oh my [TS]

00:04:52   god what is happening at the end of this [TS]

00:04:54   movie but again we're getting ahead of [TS]

00:04:56   ourselves [TS]

00:04:57   yeah so why don't we why don't we begin [TS]

00:04:59   at the beginning the movie opens with a [TS]

00:05:01   naked woman running down a deserted [TS]

00:05:03   country road was just and some really [TS]

00:05:05   really bad ADR yes which is how I the [TS]

00:05:09   whole movie has that whole movie yes but [TS]

00:05:12   i like most of my movies to start that [TS]

00:05:14   way about the the ADR they're like that [TS]

00:05:16   first scene all she's doing is like [TS]

00:05:18   heavy breathing and panting it was like [TS]

00:05:19   a bad 70s porn where they're too cheap [TS]

00:05:21   to rent sound equipment on location ran [TS]

00:05:24   really far and was very much out of [TS]

00:05:26   breath which is why she's panting [TS]

00:05:27   heavily through the first three minutes [TS]

00:05:30   of the credits the whole credit again [TS]

00:05:32   erica you you like movies that you like [TS]

00:05:34   and I like movies that I like so fair [TS]

00:05:37   enough i actually really dug that though [TS]

00:05:39   I thought this you have the weirdest [TS]

00:05:41   thing a man over the credits or I think [TS]

00:05:43   yeah I think it sets it it sets a tone [TS]

00:05:45   that and it's not just its necking cold [TS]

00:05:47   with like the breathless sob [TS]

00:05:48   accompaniment and well at we we should [TS]

00:05:51   point out that the this naked lady a [TS]

00:05:54   very young [TS]

00:05:54   Cloris Leachman all the obviously she [TS]

00:05:57   still sort of looks 80 years old she [TS]

00:05:59   yeah she observes angles from certain [TS]

00:06:02   angles but it'sit's young naked Cloris [TS]

00:06:03   Leachman also at after she's picked up [TS]

00:06:07   in the credits roll the credits roll [TS]

00:06:08   from the bottom to the top so [TS]

00:06:09   everything's like reading a reading a [TS]

00:06:11   highway markings on the you know street [TS]

00:06:14   markings where it's all upside down [TS]

00:06:15   which i think is intentional yeah i know [TS]

00:06:17   its centennial but because it's it says [TS]

00:06:20   the car is driving so it sits down now [TS]

00:06:22   deadly kiss me Mickey Spillane ok deval [TS]

00:06:25   Frank by music yeah mhm which I need to [TS]

00:06:29   point out music by Frank of all of Brady [TS]

00:06:31   Bunch same family affair her the there [TS]

00:06:35   yeah family affair as well but here is [TS]

00:06:40   doing music for for picky spooning and [TS]

00:06:42   it turns out that the first person chief [TS]

00:06:45   lines on the hot well she could have [TS]

00:06:47   other people could have driven past her [TS]

00:06:48   and she could have dodged them but the [TS]

00:06:50   first person who stops and and get the [TS]

00:06:52   stick stuck in his wheel it just happens [TS]

00:06:54   to be tough [TS]

00:06:56   la private dick Mike Hammer chair does [TS]

00:06:59   amazing and he gets it and end and early [TS]

00:07:04   on he he is just I there's there's no [TS]

00:07:07   way of saying this is just the world's [TS]

00:07:09   biggest dick the other hand good because [TS]

00:07:12   it is or otherwise [TS]

00:07:13   yeah let me guess you went out with a [TS]

00:07:15   guy who thought the no was a [TS]

00:07:17   three-letter word yet [TS]

00:07:19   yeah he is just unsympathetic to this [TS]

00:07:21   naked panting terrified for her life [TS]

00:07:24   woman yeah and then says I should just [TS]

00:07:26   kick you out of the car [TS]

00:07:27   yeah well admittedly after three minutes [TS]

00:07:28   of the panting I wanted to leave the car [TS]

00:07:30   and although she did it she did get him [TS]

00:07:33   right [TS]

00:07:34   she's like you're the kind of guy with [TS]

00:07:35   appearance matters and nothing else and [TS]

00:07:37   it's just your car and your muscles and [TS]

00:07:39   all that i actually had him pegged yeah [TS]

00:07:41   but so they drive for a bit and it turns [TS]

00:07:46   out the cheese [TS]

00:07:47   she's running from the loony bin mhm for [TS]

00:07:50   reasons that we can't determine she's [TS]

00:07:51   being pursued and all of a sudden the [TS]

00:07:55   dudes who were pursuing that her catch [TS]

00:07:57   up and torture her and beat up my camera [TS]

00:08:01   and dump the bodies in the car and [TS]

00:08:04   pushed off the side of the road to to [TS]

00:08:06   make it look like a Oh terrific accident [TS]

00:08:08   that will that will kill them both but [TS]

00:08:10   but my camera lives [TS]

00:08:11   D'Arnot mm turn helps probably heard is [TS]

00:08:15   indeed and this is when we find out as [TS]

00:08:18   he's being debriefed by his his pal the [TS]

00:08:20   LA Police Lieutenant who looks a lot [TS]

00:08:22   like former California Governor grave [TS]

00:08:25   David yeah that's what is great Davis [TS]

00:08:27   doing in this movie smoking always am [TS]

00:08:31   also a quick question how do you get a [TS]

00:08:33   tree branch the size of a shop broom [TS]

00:08:35   wrapped around your axle it's [TS]

00:08:37   complicated Steve cars in 52 very [TS]

00:08:39   different you know the car was moving [TS]

00:08:41   very fast and there was literally and he [TS]

00:08:43   has a guy check it out cause it's [TS]

00:08:45   pulling to the right so the guy at the [TS]

00:08:46   at the filling station like leans [TS]

00:08:48   forward and he pulls out like a mature [TS]

00:08:50   poplar this was communist / still makes [TS]

00:08:55   it all the way back to LA [TS]

00:08:56   we just pulled out that tree and that [TS]

00:08:59   was fine [TS]

00:09:00   this was you know this is wrapped around [TS]

00:09:01   your wheel and it one of my favorite [TS]

00:09:03   early scenes of the movie is the the [TS]

00:09:05   interview with all the federal [TS]

00:09:08   investigators we're basically my camera [TS]

00:09:11   doesn't say a word and there's just one [TS]

00:09:13   guy answering all the questions about [TS]

00:09:15   yeah my camera is and it turns out he's [TS]

00:09:17   a very terrible person he's a Tae Hee [TS]

00:09:20   does penny any divorce cases mostly and [TS]

00:09:23   it involves basically him or his female [TS]

00:09:26   assistant going and and setting up [TS]

00:09:28   either the man or the woman or both and [TS]

00:09:30   then did getting bribe money from them [TS]

00:09:34   is in short a bedroom dick [TS]

00:09:37   yes in every every sense of the word but [TS]

00:09:41   I as it turns out and it ends with the [TS]

00:09:44   with somebody demanding that someone how [TS]

00:09:45   to open up a window as i recall which I [TS]

00:09:47   thought was you have nice dreams anyway [TS]

00:09:49   I'm sure you plan that absolutely [TS]

00:09:53   as you know i'm quite the fan of 1776 [TS]

00:09:56   good so I e my camera decides either out [TS]

00:10:02   of a sense of I'm going to avenge the [TS]

00:10:04   death of a poor naked Cloris Leachman [TS]

00:10:06   more likely out of the sense that hmm [TS]

00:10:09   this seems like a case that could lead [TS]

00:10:10   to some such a little piece of a little [TS]

00:10:13   piece of money for my camera also has [TS]

00:10:15   mad because you know they wrecked his [TS]

00:10:17   car and they also wrecked his car so [TS]

00:10:18   yeah so he's out to find out who exactly [TS]

00:10:22   was pursuing her and what for and that [TS]

00:10:25   leads us on a twisted tale that would [TS]

00:10:28   take me hours to to unravel here on the [TS]

00:10:31   podcast [TS]

00:10:32   suffice it to say we skip ahead a bit [TS]

00:10:35   and there's lots of confrontations with [TS]

00:10:37   a lot of thugs and a lot of colorful [TS]

00:10:39   characters but it turns out that the [TS]

00:10:42   thing everyone's after is what my camera [TS]

00:10:44   is a lady friend so eloquently calls the [TS]

00:10:47   the the whose it i believe for the [TS]

00:10:49   whatsit the the great whatsit the great [TS]

00:10:51   whatsit it's a it's a case and it when [TS]

00:10:55   you open it it's very hot to the touch [TS]

00:10:57   and it's glowing and oh it burns my [TS]

00:10:59   cameras and the first time he tries to [TS]

00:11:02   open it [TS]

00:11:02   yeah I have a note that is my king my [TS]

00:11:04   cameras going to get armed cancer [TS]

00:11:06   this thing thank you brother deserves it [TS]

00:11:10   yeah probably it's the words out one of [TS]

00:11:12   the people that's been helping my camera [TS]

00:11:14   all along is the roommate of the [TS]

00:11:17   deceased Cloris Leachman shiza she's a [TS]

00:11:19   mousy haired wave herself and and she [TS]

00:11:24   smooches my camera whenever to [TS]

00:11:26   everyone's is smooching my camera [TS]

00:11:28   getting slapped by him in this movie [TS]

00:11:30   it doesn't matter how long we've known [TS]

00:11:32   if a woman sees him she basically walks [TS]

00:11:34   up to him implants when running the [TS]

00:11:35   kisser [TS]

00:11:36   yeah again has so often happens you like [TS]

00:11:39   the movies you like the movies I like so [TS]

00:11:43   long story short they grabbed my [TS]

00:11:47   camera's girl that the baddies and say [TS]

00:11:49   hey you better give us that that that [TS]

00:11:51   case and the UH my camera contrives a [TS]

00:11:57   way to confront the confront the bad [TS]

00:12:01   guys and it turns out that the the [TS]

00:12:03   roommate of Cloris Leachman is in fact [TS]

00:12:05   and I is spoiler alert it turns out that [TS]

00:12:09   she's working with the baddies and she [TS]

00:12:11   double crosses the baddies shoots the [TS]

00:12:13   the insane doctor who quotes lots of [TS]

00:12:15   mythology [TS]

00:12:16   yes haha ahead up but we'll get to that [TS]

00:12:20   a moment and she opens the box and [TS]

00:12:23   unlike my camera who like opens it gets [TS]

00:12:26   burton says I in open this any further [TS]

00:12:28   she opens it all the way and burst into [TS]

00:12:31   flames not my school bellick not unlike [TS]

00:12:34   the Nazis in Raiders of the Lost guard [TS]

00:12:36   as as Mike Hammer and his girlfriend [TS]

00:12:39   flee flee the premises now in the ending [TS]

00:12:43   that I saw originally the part where [TS]

00:12:45   them they escaped to the to the beach [TS]

00:12:48   outside of the beach house as it is [TS]

00:12:50   engulfed in flames was cut and it just [TS]

00:12:53   ends with the house bursting into flames [TS]

00:12:55   and into a nuclear cloud as if the [TS]

00:12:57   entire world has been destroyed by NASA [TS]

00:12:59   by this by this phone you are and that's [TS]

00:13:02   what made me originally see this movie [TS]

00:13:04   and go oh my god what's happening there [TS]

00:13:07   what I see I actually like that ending [TS]

00:13:09   better because yeah it [TS]

00:13:11   yeah it's a more chilling ended but in [TS]

00:13:13   in the in the orig what turns out to be [TS]

00:13:15   the original ending in the restored [TS]

00:13:17   ending which was I think resurfaced [TS]

00:13:19   about 1997 it has the the footage of [TS]

00:13:22   them escaping into the sea and then [TS]

00:13:23   looking back on the house as it is [TS]

00:13:26   enveloped in a in a nuclear implosion [TS]

00:13:29   and of course because this movie was [TS]

00:13:30   made in 1995 55 it is obviously a a [TS]

00:13:37   panicky movie about the Atomic Age and [TS]

00:13:40   how and it presupposes that we're all [TS]

00:13:44   going to be destroyed by the by the Big [TS]

00:13:47   Bob so so there you go [TS]

00:13:49   that that's the that's the most [TS]

00:13:51   comprehensive and cohesive somebody [TS]

00:13:54   gonna kiss me deadly yeah you'll ever [TS]

00:13:55   get [TS]

00:13:56   I throw to the floor for discussion yeah [TS]

00:13:58   i was just going to say that that ending [TS]

00:14:00   that they debate you added back in with [TS]

00:14:02   them escaping to the beach and looking [TS]

00:14:04   back up on the surface it might seem [TS]

00:14:07   like it's a happier ending but really [TS]

00:14:09   they're just gonna die very slowly and [TS]

00:14:11   horribly from radiation poisoning just [TS]

00:14:13   like anybody who's used the locker room [TS]

00:14:15   where that thing was stored for the past [TS]

00:14:16   how yeah how many weeks like all of [TS]

00:14:18   those guys that poor club who not pretty [TS]

00:14:21   well this this particular bit of nuclear [TS]

00:14:24   fuel apparently only works when it's [TS]

00:14:25   aimed at you know let's try possible [TS]

00:14:29   that's a letterbox TV we live a block [TS]

00:14:31   and if they offered in leather for most [TS]

00:14:33   the time so everybody say it's an [TS]

00:14:36   important installation when you go to [TS]

00:14:38   the dentist that vest they put on you [TS]

00:14:39   when you when they take your x-rays [TS]

00:14:41   that's what i like and i love that best [TS]

00:14:43   so heavy in comfy yet supposedly that [TS]

00:14:47   attending the the just you know see [TS]

00:14:50   everybody died in the house that was [TS]

00:14:52   only the US version everywhere else [TS]

00:14:54   around the country had the extra two [TS]

00:14:56   minutes where everyone else where in the [TS]

00:14:58   world have the extra minutes where there [TS]

00:14:59   on the beach looking at the house and [TS]

00:15:02   then say apparently was restored from [TS]

00:15:03   you know that's how they knew that was [TS]

00:15:06   the ending [TS]

00:15:06   yeah you know Phil I I your your [TS]

00:15:09   synopsis is fascinating to me because [TS]

00:15:11   you did you did very much what I would [TS]

00:15:14   do if I were to synopsize this movie [TS]

00:15:15   which is there's a lot of detail at the [TS]

00:15:17   beginning there's the end and then in [TS]

00:15:19   the middle [TS]

00:15:20   um lots of stuff happens there's they [TS]

00:15:23   get my camera talks to [TS]

00:15:25   people and goes to some places and I [TS]

00:15:27   didn't really follow that and then they [TS]

00:15:29   end up with the box and things explode [TS]

00:15:32   and I looked on the wikipedia summary to [TS]

00:15:34   try and get a better sense of the plot [TS]

00:15:35   and realize that the author of the [TS]

00:15:37   wikipedia some summary [TS]

00:15:39   similarly threw up their hands and say [TS]

00:15:41   well suffice to say that at the end [TS]

00:15:44   there's a box and it blows up the mess [TS]

00:15:45   be so here's the thing about film noir [TS]

00:15:46   that I found her at least the the [TS]

00:15:48   fillmore examples that I like it's not [TS]

00:15:51   so much about the plot as it is about [TS]

00:15:54   the the the characters that you meet [TS]

00:15:57   along the way and two of my favorites in [TS]

00:16:00   this movie are the two heavy sugar and [TS]

00:16:02   oh whose jacket was Chuck masharawi [TS]

00:16:06   yardley not really a small Harley max I [TS]

00:16:09   was gonna say max sugar and sugar and [TS]

00:16:10   Charlie Max who are these the if you I [TS]

00:16:15   don't know if listeners know who Jack [TS]

00:16:16   Elam is he is the character actor from [TS]

00:16:18   the nineteen fifties and sixties and [TS]

00:16:20   early seventies with with the eyes that [TS]

00:16:22   went in five thousand directions as he [TS]

00:16:25   was walking and he just in movies he [TS]

00:16:27   just played a series of heavies but [TS]

00:16:30   mostly it [TS]

00:16:32   never fear some heavies just sort of [TS]

00:16:34   heavies who were out of their depth and [TS]

00:16:36   has been a lot of westerns and sergio [TS]

00:16:37   leone's beginning Ryan's yes exactly he [TS]

00:16:40   he cut most of his teeth in westerns by [TS]

00:16:42   the early on in his career he he played [TS]

00:16:44   the goon and a lot of movies and usually [TS]

00:16:46   the goon that gets smacked around it is [TS]

00:16:47   he the guy who Mike Hammer beats up in [TS]

00:16:49   the alleyway I man throws down the [TS]

00:16:51   stairs [TS]

00:16:52   he's the one who acts up John sugar he's [TS]

00:16:54   going back to you slowly and in the pool [TS]

00:16:56   the quad a little pool now it's the boys [TS]

00:16:58   that's a medical scene where you don't [TS]

00:17:00   even see the guy get punch you just see [TS]

00:17:02   his body drop yes that was my favorite [TS]

00:17:03   action sequence of the whole thing and [TS]

00:17:05   he's so scared that one of his eyes [TS]

00:17:07   decides to point the other direction [TS]

00:17:08   I just love how like you know the one [TS]

00:17:11   guy approaches hammer and you don't see [TS]

00:17:14   anything you don't even see emotion from [TS]

00:17:16   hammer and just over some major [TS]

00:17:18   obstacles backing up backing up like [TS]

00:17:20   yeah what the hell was that the tip [TS]

00:17:23   that's just the two great scenes where [TS]

00:17:24   sugar gets the just first gets the crap [TS]

00:17:27   beaten out of them and then gets [TS]

00:17:28   murdered by my camera there are never [TS]

00:17:30   shown on camera it's just Jackie limbs [TS]

00:17:32   reaction yeah and you know for all that [TS]

00:17:34   this is probably not my favorite film [TS]

00:17:36   noir movie over there [TS]

00:17:37   there's some some decent directorial [TS]

00:17:39   touches like that I I appreciate that [TS]

00:17:41   for sure [TS]

00:17:42   time for a brief break to tell you about [TS]

00:17:45   Squarespace now you've heard everybody [TS]

00:17:48   in podcasting talk about Squarespace [TS]

00:19:11   find something that's creative commons [TS]

00:19:13   non commercial or commercial use ok and [TS]

00:19:15   it it can be tricky [TS]

00:19:17   or you can work with getty images which [TS]

00:19:19   is a library of images you have access [TS]

00:19:21   to more than 40 million professional [TS]

00:19:24   stock photographs and they would [TS]

00:19:25   normally cost you hundreds of thousands [TS]

00:19:27   of dollars per image but they're ten [TS]

00:19:29   dollars per image to squarespace [TS]

00:19:30   customers so huge way to make your [TS]

00:19:45   new templates that cater to each of [TS]

00:19:47   those professions and then you get to [TS]

00:19:49   use them to that's pretty awesome [TS]

00:19:51   so here's what you do get started at [TS]

00:20:07   your support for the uncomfortable so [TS]

00:20:09   thank you very much to squarespace for [TS]

00:20:11   your continued support of the [TS]

00:20:13   uncomfortable [TS]

00:20:14   Squarespace a better web starts with [TS]

00:20:16   your website now I'm not a really a new [TS]

00:20:19   are aficionado [TS]

00:20:20   so I'm asking this in all honesty are [TS]

00:20:22   the lead characters usually so awful I [TS]

00:20:27   mean hammer is it is a terrible terrible [TS]

00:20:29   mess and he's gonna be a stream I i [TS]

00:20:32   would say not as awful but ready [TS]

00:20:34   generally not morally let's say at best [TS]

00:20:38   they're they're chaotic good i mean this [TS]

00:20:40   is a guy who's being walked out of the [TS]

00:20:42   hospital by his girlfriend sees two [TS]

00:20:44   other girls passed by and says we look [TS]

00:20:45   at all the goodies and that's kind of [TS]

00:20:49   our introduction the first words out of [TS]

00:20:51   his mouth is and on the scene on the [TS]

00:20:53   steps as you walk in the hospital's like [TS]

00:20:54   I never thought I'd smell that again [TS]

00:20:57   smell what what yeah sidewalk be our [TS]

00:21:02   yeah I do want to say a few kind words [TS]

00:21:05   about Ralph Meeker who plays plays my [TS]

00:21:10   camera I think that this is this is the [TS]

00:21:12   best thing he's ever done [TS]

00:21:14   he just throws himself into that role [TS]

00:21:16   with with relish he is great in that [TS]

00:21:18   part because he is not trying to be no [TS]

00:21:21   nice guy he is he is he is a jerk and he [TS]

00:21:24   embraces it there there's a scene where [TS]

00:21:27   he uh basically hides from a guy that [TS]

00:21:30   he's trying to outwit any out with some [TS]

00:21:33   quite easily and the guy discovers them [TS]

00:21:36   and and and Ralph maker just smiles [TS]

00:21:40   because he knows it's beaten time it's [TS]

00:21:41   time to slap you [TS]

00:21:43   he slaps around an old man at that [TS]

00:21:44   athletic club oh it's great and he takes [TS]

00:21:47   back the money he was going to bribe it [TS]

00:21:49   with that's that's the best part [TS]

00:21:50   exactly well it's either you get broader [TS]

00:21:53   you get slapped a mac i chose slap I [TS]

00:21:55   have a note that don't ask my camera for [TS]

00:21:57   more money just at no point asking for [TS]

00:21:59   more money and never put your hands near [TS]

00:22:01   drool he made you an offer he did [TS]

00:22:04   looks like he's having fun i wouldn't do [TS]

00:22:05   that looks like he's enjoying the role [TS]

00:22:07   but i cant send pic particularly enjoyed [TS]

00:22:09   the performance although i've never seen [TS]

00:22:11   Ralph maker in anything else that I can [TS]

00:22:12   call to mind so maybe i will agree that [TS]

00:22:15   this is his best role I think he takes [TS]

00:22:17   this really awful character and somehow [TS]

00:22:18   makes him less awful get you i really [TS]

00:22:24   can't condone that my camera character [TS]

00:22:26   in this but it you don't completely hate [TS]

00:22:29   him by the end at least I don't just [TS]

00:22:31   simply because he does appear to be [TS]

00:22:33   enjoying himself [TS]

00:22:34   I'll get a real real Nicholson vibe from [TS]

00:22:37   the middle of places maybe yeah yeah [TS]

00:22:39   underneath nerving grin that he has but [TS]

00:22:41   I think that's true this is very much I [TS]

00:22:43   I think you can draw a little dotted [TS]

00:22:46   line between this in chinatown he gave [TS]

00:22:49   me are kind of like a christopher [TS]

00:22:50   mcdonald kind of i've actually I thought [TS]

00:22:53   you know if these voices are is a dead [TS]

00:22:56   ringer actually for Kent Mansley and the [TS]

00:22:57   iron yeah it when it's it's interesting [TS]

00:23:00   is he was the other thing is probably [TS]

00:23:02   most famous for is doing the play picnic [TS]

00:23:05   on stage and he anyone awards for that [TS]

00:23:08   and then he got my camera and then that [TS]

00:23:12   was kind of it turns your career killer [TS]

00:23:15   huh [TS]

00:23:16   but yeah you know it's it's kind of [TS]

00:23:18   interesting i I don't know about his you [TS]

00:23:22   know how he saw the character but i know [TS]

00:23:23   have the screenwriters saw this he did [TS]

00:23:26   not care for splain or for the book and [TS]

00:23:30   he just he just had fun and and his [TS]

00:23:32   contempt shows it's wonderful explain [TS]

00:23:34   clearly did not care much for him as [TS]

00:23:36   anything you're not happy you know [TS]

00:23:39   yeah this this movie at the what was [TS]

00:23:41   weird to me i was expecting a fairly [TS]

00:23:44   straightforward noir and at the end the [TS]

00:23:46   last note i had was okay that was a trip [TS]

00:23:48   and it wasn't you it wasn't just the [TS]

00:23:52   nuclear waste thing although that was [TS]

00:23:54   incredibly insane [TS]

00:23:55   there were all sorts of bits in there [TS]

00:23:56   that just maybe they were almost [TS]

00:23:58   hallucinatory yeah I think it's because [TS]

00:24:00   we're in the fifties here and we're [TS]

00:24:02   getting towards the end of a sort of the [TS]

00:24:04   the noir period so I think maybe they [TS]

00:24:06   were trying to just went up themselves [TS]

00:24:07   at this point but I mean even as even as [TS]

00:24:11   a movie other than water there were so [TS]

00:24:12   many just weird things like starting [TS]

00:24:14   with the sobs over the credits and [TS]

00:24:17   and i mean the the office has a ballet [TS]

00:24:19   bar and a stripper pole in it and then [TS]

00:24:23   there's always things that are sort of [TS]

00:24:24   they feel like they shouldn't be in 1955 [TS]

00:24:27   but apparently they were like the the in [TS]

00:24:29   wall answering machine surreal to road [TS]

00:24:31   the answering machine was amazing [TS]

00:24:33   that's gonna learn that the first pi/2 [TS]

00:24:36   have an answering machine in film and TV [TS]

00:24:38   and it's amazing even the leave your [TS]

00:24:40   message at the sound of the tone [TS]

00:24:42   outgoing messages intact in 1955 yeah [TS]

00:24:45   and it was a nice Tony really great tone [TS]

00:24:47   and I was impressed with the tone i love [TS]

00:24:50   to others there's always kind of a [TS]

00:24:52   presumably unintentional product [TS]

00:24:54   placement I mean there's there's seven [TS]

00:24:56   up there's Pabst Blue Ribbon their [TS]

00:24:57   standard oil is chevron there's there's [TS]

00:25:01   something else near the garage [TS]

00:25:03   Karl the one of the main bad guys know I [TS]

00:25:06   love izod shirt haha yeah in 1955 which [TS]

00:25:10   is how you know he's evil [TS]

00:25:12   the only product placement i noticed was [TS]

00:25:14   totally not actual product placement but [TS]

00:25:15   one of the guys was named trivago the [TS]

00:25:18   italian opera singer fellow and a whole [TS]

00:25:19   I could think of was that disheveled guy [TS]

00:25:21   from the hotel commercials and that I [TS]

00:25:23   think is my favorite Ralph maker moment [TS]

00:25:25   when he goes to confront the opera [TS]

00:25:28   singer and and and stumbles upon his [TS]

00:25:30   record collection goes hey this is a [TS]

00:25:32   nice record-smashing shame if something [TS]

00:25:35   happened to it might be just amazing and [TS]

00:25:37   have to do that either they're not [TS]

00:25:39   really no reason to push that guy right [TS]

00:25:41   camera i had that demo with him where he [TS]

00:25:43   goes to the house and the and the pretty [TS]

00:25:45   blonde Marilyn Monroe type is like it [TS]

00:25:48   she's like very interested in him and [TS]

00:25:50   then like oh come on inside and we'll go [TS]

00:25:52   let's go to the pool and all that and [TS]

00:25:54   and it's like this is so bizarre like [TS]

00:25:55   this would not what is happening what am [TS]

00:25:58   I seeing why would she behaved this way [TS]

00:25:59   and that the the thing that really [TS]

00:26:01   killed me is when he goes into the the [TS]

00:26:03   little of the little house where he [TS]

00:26:04   drops the guy off camera she looks at [TS]

00:26:06   the at the guys around the pool is like [TS]

00:26:08   I figured why not what [TS]

00:26:11   and she's the one that she's the one [TS]

00:26:12   who's never seen him before he drives it [TS]

00:26:14   all gets out of the car she immediately [TS]

00:26:15   kisses immediately genus car she should [TS]

00:26:18   you don't dislike anyone I know [TS]

00:26:20   oh my god here is our [TS]

00:26:24   and on top of that you've got the [TS]

00:26:25   performance of the girl who plays Lily [TS]

00:26:27   Carver who is either a wonderful or a [TS]

00:26:30   terrible actor i really need but her [TS]

00:26:33   performance is so insane I mean she's [TS]

00:26:35   completely unhinged [TS]

00:26:37   mhm Lily Carver we should mention is the [TS]

00:26:39   is the lady who secretly working with [TS]

00:26:42   the baddest yesterday not really the [TS]

00:26:43   roommate who was actually fished out of [TS]

00:26:45   the bay several weeks pre-ride we find [TS]

00:26:48   out let that's actually a nice [TS]

00:26:50   comeuppance for for a hammer in a way [TS]

00:26:52   where he is detective friend governor [TS]

00:26:55   gray davis is like oh yeah Mr private [TS]

00:26:58   dick if you talk to the police you know [TS]

00:27:00   she was dead weeks ago and i like that [TS]

00:27:02   was really matter what if there and [TS]

00:27:03   think about his girl that was a good kid [TS]

00:27:08   that's a healthy relationship [TS]

00:27:10   oh yeah velda ms/ms I'm always glad when [TS]

00:27:12   you're in trouble because you always [TS]

00:27:13   come to me that's healthy yeah well I [TS]

00:27:16   less said about that the better know is [TS]

00:27:18   that seen her wear it the police [TS]

00:27:20   detective really puts puts my camera [TS]

00:27:24   street i think is fun it is Howard to [TS]

00:27:28   know that he's this is not know nice guy [TS]

00:27:30   if you thought we were being ambivalent [TS]

00:27:32   about how we felt about my camera know [TS]

00:27:34   he's terrible he deserves everything [TS]

00:27:35   that happened to him [TS]

00:27:37   you know i'm pretty sure he's a [TS]

00:27:38   sociopath yes yeah I think maybe so but [TS]

00:27:41   so are we are we are we just gonna not [TS]

00:27:44   talk about Nick have we don't know why [TS]

00:27:45   I'm waiting for it i'm wade working up [TS]

00:27:48   to it i have in my notes that just like [TS]

00:27:50   you you know how you make a walk-on [TS]

00:27:51   character more interesting [TS]

00:27:53   you just make a mess Nick give me a cute [TS]

00:27:55   little accent wha instant character you [TS]

00:27:57   know we've got the Greek getty and if [TS]

00:27:59   you really want to make a married man [TS]

00:28:01   memorable make him the most ethnic [TS]

00:28:03   person of all time he is literally [TS]

00:28:06   listed in the imd credits as no I among [TS]

00:28:09   ethnic haha yeah his actual last name [TS]

00:28:13   was papadatos la colombe right now [TS]

00:28:19   because you know that everyone was movie [TS]

00:28:22   if you've watched this movie you know [TS]

00:28:23   what you were talking about if you [TS]

00:28:25   haven't let us warning [TS]

00:28:26   about yes nick is nick is my cameras [TS]

00:28:29   only friend hey my camera picture God [TS]

00:28:32   without doing a guy from Star Wars [TS]

00:28:33   Episode one now but it's basically the [TS]

00:28:35   same guy he's basically he's Greek is [TS]

00:28:38   necessarily well with elegant but yeah [TS]

00:28:41   sure I guess maybe surprisingly separate [TS]

00:28:43   he fixes my cameras car when the bad [TS]

00:28:46   guys like get my camera car that's wired [TS]

00:28:48   with explosives heat he gets in the car [TS]

00:28:50   like a child and I gotta gonna start the [TS]

00:28:54   car mr. mr. hammerstine just blithely [TS]

00:28:57   Yanks out the couple of sticks of [TS]

00:28:58   dynamite the I really constitute a [TS]

00:29:00   sophisticated car Bob and 19 and tucks [TS]

00:29:03   it into his breast pocket and stuff do [TS]

00:29:05   you notice how my camera is like [TS]

00:29:07   standing slightly away from the card [TS]

00:29:08   says go ahead Nick open the hood look [TS]

00:29:11   good [TS]

00:29:11   no I'm the other side I keep you not [TS]

00:29:14   getting anywhere letting his quote [TS]

00:29:16   unquote friends take that for india [TS]

00:29:18   around he came on-screen i flashed back [TS]

00:29:21   to pixar's cars and just went feet stop [TS]

00:29:24   yeah yeah that's about right and in [TS]

00:29:27   fairness to my camera he gets very sad [TS]

00:29:29   when when Nick guys okay so this is the [TS]

00:29:31   thing that made me laugh the most in the [TS]

00:29:33   entire movie is he my camera and nick [TS]

00:29:36   have a conversation later in the movie [TS]

00:29:37   and then he says neck look I can't I [TS]

00:29:40   can't finish talking to you now but i'll [TS]

00:29:42   be back I'll see you later I thought oh [TS]

00:29:43   my god nick is gonna die and the next [TS]

00:29:45   shot is the guy turning the jack off on [TS]

00:29:47   the car crushing Nick to death am I [TS]

00:29:49   guess II never promised a future [TS]

00:29:51   conversation with a character because [TS]

00:29:53   that means they're about to die [TS]

00:29:55   oh no my mustache oh yeah but they [TS]

00:29:58   killed Nick Nick that's a spicymeatball [TS]

00:30:04   may commit the ball [TS]

00:30:06   oh don't worry and it's not like he's [TS]

00:30:09   the only one because you've got the [TS]

00:30:10   Italian moving man and the Irish [TS]

00:30:12   landlord it just goes on but it's funny [TS]

00:30:15   that the Nick performance is so over the [TS]

00:30:17   top that the bartender when he's [TS]

00:30:19   describing Nick laters as novel haha he [TS]

00:30:23   says he's xu [TS]

00:30:25   you there even make it fun of it in film [TS]

00:30:28   the other the other character i think [TS]

00:30:30   that deserves a special call out is is [TS]

00:30:33   dr. Kennedy whose the corner that my [TS]

00:30:36   camper [TS]

00:30:37   it's the crowd yeah sighs I realize I [TS]

00:30:40   need to specify when I say my camera [TS]

00:30:41   beats the crap out of someone that could [TS]

00:30:43   be any one of it as your captors but he [TS]

00:30:46   he find some evidence on the body of [TS]

00:30:50   Cloris Leachman and my camera once it [TS]

00:30:53   and my camera's pays him for it and the [TS]

00:30:56   doctor so hot that he's this mouthy [TS]

00:30:59   little fellow I'm not going to give it [TS]

00:31:01   to you and then my camera slams his hand [TS]

00:31:03   into a true or a couple of times and I I [TS]

00:31:06   that scene makes me giggle I don't want [TS]

00:31:09   because the first of all it's funny that [TS]

00:31:10   he just kind of let anybody any random [TS]

00:31:12   guy off the street wandering and check [TS]

00:31:14   out the steps [TS]

00:31:15   well whatever zooms that as a private [TS]

00:31:17   detective my camera knows his way around [TS]

00:31:19   the the coroner's office of of Los [TS]

00:31:23   Angeles surely this fellow is run across [TS]

00:31:25   my camera that and should know better [TS]

00:31:26   hmm indeed but yeah I love the bit where [TS]

00:31:29   he's a mic is sort of working out the [TS]

00:31:32   whole remember me Sonic thing which [TS]

00:31:34   basically everybody saw coming miles and [TS]

00:31:36   miles away and and as he's describing as [TS]

00:31:40   he's kind of working it out the [TS]

00:31:41   coroner's just smiling and nodding like [TS]

00:31:43   I already know this [TS]

00:31:44   yes cut to the chase if if you hit it is [TS]

00:31:47   just got there eventually nice get to [TS]

00:31:49   the part where you offer me money [TS]

00:31:52   skip the part where you slam my hand [TS]

00:31:53   into the drawer couple of dozen times [TS]

00:31:56   and I scream in agony [TS]

00:31:57   well somebody's screaming it's not him [TS]

00:31:59   it's it's all the bad ad origin my [TS]

00:32:01   camera's face when he does that though [TS]

00:32:03   he smiles yeah most disturbing gleaning [TS]

00:32:06   he's sadistic in this [TS]

00:32:08   yeah I mean of all of all the my camera [TS]

00:32:11   things I've seen over the years this [TS]

00:32:13   might be my favorite adaptation because [TS]

00:32:14   it's the only one that really captures [TS]

00:32:16   how just kind of stupid and brutish and [TS]

00:32:19   sociopathic he is [TS]

00:32:20   oh yeah Alex it's it's quite something I [TS]

00:32:23   am NOT a Mickey Spillane fan and I don't [TS]

00:32:27   really care for for the my camera [TS]

00:32:29   character over and I don't care for his [TS]

00:32:32   books but I [TS]

00:32:33   enjoy this adaptation because it gets to [TS]

00:32:38   the heart of this is this is this is [TS]

00:32:40   terrible man [TS]

00:32:41   yeah it does terrible things and he's a [TS]

00:32:44   terrible man he does Terry doesn't even [TS]

00:32:46   do right things for terrible reason as [TS]

00:32:49   terrible things for awful reason yeah [TS]

00:32:51   well I will say this though he doesn't [TS]

00:32:54   open up the he doesn't open up the box [TS]

00:32:57   in the locker room and kill everybody [TS]

00:32:59   and yeah I'm good I'm good on you [TS]

00:33:00   my camera yeah he's like well I don't [TS]

00:33:02   understand this weird science thing i'm [TS]

00:33:04   closing today I just close that if I [TS]

00:33:06   were you will just be regular in the [TS]

00:33:08   locker in a lot i'm sure it'll be safe [TS]

00:33:10   that we have to get no money or fame for [TS]

00:33:12   this if I die [TS]

00:33:13   yeah so I hate the creepy chick took off [TS]

00:33:15   wonder where she went well [TS]

00:33:17   driving on the other thing that [TS]

00:33:20   fascinates me about this movie is the [TS]

00:33:22   director robert aldrich and if you look [TS]

00:33:24   at this filmography it is it is like the [TS]

00:33:26   hometown buffet of movies he's just pick [TS]

00:33:29   he does every every dang thing one can [TS]

00:33:33   do we did the dirty dozen he did a hush [TS]

00:33:37   hush sweet Charlotte and whatever [TS]

00:33:38   happened to Baby Jane and the longest [TS]

00:33:41   yard and the Frisco kid and what do [TS]

00:33:43   these movies have in common [TS]

00:33:44   well they were all shot on film they use [TS]

00:33:49   doctors [TS]

00:33:50   yes he did for for texas which it is a [TS]

00:33:53   terrible terrible Frank Sinatra Dean [TS]

00:33:55   Martin movie know anyhow it down a [TS]

00:33:58   little more well you know how dare you [TS]

00:34:02   we know this movie did have though this [TS]

00:34:05   movie did have a lot of shots of pets on [TS]

00:34:08   pillows i don't know if you guys noticed [TS]

00:34:09   that [TS]

00:34:10   yeah hello dog in a pillow some other [TS]

00:34:12   shots they can depend on the cat the cat [TS]

00:34:14   was like in the answering service which [TS]

00:34:16   I really i love that that was a really [TS]

00:34:18   absurd moment we called the doctor and [TS]

00:34:19   the doctor is not available in the lady [TS]

00:34:21   at the answering service is like well I [TS]

00:34:23   don't know what to tell you he's not [TS]

00:34:25   available I'm like this is the most why [TS]

00:34:27   do you even have an answering service if [TS]

00:34:28   they don't do anything but say no sorry [TS]

00:34:30   he's not here he might make a Yeti job [TS]

00:34:32   but so that's all [TS]

00:34:34   like what about thank you for that [TS]

00:34:35   interesting piece of information answer [TS]

00:34:37   service lady but the best part is that [TS]

00:34:38   then she's got that cat perched above [TS]

00:34:40   her like the cat is also answering calls [TS]

00:34:43   or something and he [TS]

00:34:44   that was the previous model answering [TS]

00:34:47   Michelle before the real real in-wall [TS]

00:34:49   model [TS]

00:34:50   yeah was a cat based approach instead of [TS]

00:34:53   a lovely tone like is it was hell yeah [TS]

00:34:56   this is a weird movie [TS]

00:34:59   yeah couple more bits of insanity in the [TS]

00:35:01   movie i like this the the sleeping pills [TS]

00:35:04   that immediately knock the gap that's [TS]

00:35:07   totally how that works line as he can [TS]

00:35:08   avoid getting worked over best defense [TS]

00:35:10   ever i'm going to keep sleeping pills in [TS]

00:35:12   my house and case i'm gonna get hassled [TS]

00:35:14   that's crazy to see chug this is [TS]

00:35:16   sleeping potion and he starts snoring [TS]

00:35:18   just before my camera can work him over [TS]

00:35:20   so he's not awake for the beatings just [TS]

00:35:22   a good call renounce can be handsome and [TS]

00:35:24   smart ya know hehe read up on my [TS]

00:35:26   cameraman my camera can hit you if [TS]

00:35:30   you're sleepy nope that's harder than a [TS]

00:35:32   sect of sketches code [TS]

00:35:34   well I was expecting oh he's committing [TS]

00:35:35   suicide you know this is this is like [TS]

00:35:37   that yeah that's what I'm not able [TS]

00:35:38   sleeping pills no he's just taking a nap [TS]

00:35:41   yep I thought he was gonna start foaming [TS]

00:35:43   at the mouth instead he starts snoring [TS]

00:35:44   he's fairly certain my camera's got a [TS]

00:35:46   short attention span it will be gone [TS]

00:35:49   well I have to say this is the best [TS]

00:35:53   movie I've ever watched on YouTube it's [TS]

00:35:55   also the only movie i've ever watched on [TS]

00:35:57   youtube so features but there's a line [TS]

00:35:59   in in here and i'm going to read it that [TS]

00:36:01   it gets by one of the villains Carl who [TS]

00:36:04   he calls up to threaten my camera and [TS]

00:36:07   and I think it basically sums up the the [TS]

00:36:09   film noir experience in a way and it's [TS]

00:36:11   what what does it matter that your work [TS]

00:36:13   has been interrupted your correct your [TS]

00:36:15   life has been ruffled to to put it [TS]

00:36:17   mildly [TS]

00:36:17   if you would not stop to pick up [TS]

00:36:19   Christina not any of these things would [TS]

00:36:21   have happened and and i think that's a [TS]

00:36:24   that's a that's a beautiful little of [TS]

00:36:27   summation of the of the Mike Hammer [TS]

00:36:29   experience and kiss me deadly a [TS]

00:36:32   suggestion then is that he run over in [TS]

00:36:34   the middle of this well then why do we [TS]

00:36:36   get out of character why did you stop [TS]

00:36:37   idiot [TS]

00:36:38   you shouldn't have stopped well had [TS]

00:36:41   amateur popular in my god how there is [TS]

00:36:43   that alleged wedge the real i had a tree [TS]

00:36:46   that I wiggled into a kayak [TS]

00:36:49   lord I you know I enjoy this movie very [TS]

00:36:54   much i disturbing any notwithstanding [TS]

00:36:56   that freak the hell out of me [TS]

00:36:58   many many years ago i think it's it's an [TS]

00:37:02   unusual movie i think it it holds up [TS]

00:37:05   well over time I enjoy Ralph makers [TS]

00:37:08   performance as unhinged as it is I i [TS]

00:37:12   think it's beautifully shot and your [TS]

00:37:15   thumb and I i get the sense that i'm [TS]

00:37:17   going to be voted down here but dammit [TS]

00:37:19   I'm right you know in fact now i like i [TS]

00:37:22   like this movie too although it's got [TS]

00:37:23   the same problem that i have with a lot [TS]

00:37:24   of the film Noirs and including out of [TS]

00:37:26   the past which we're going to talk about [TS]

00:37:27   which is it is atmospheric and [TS]

00:37:30   interesting and I like the setup and [TS]

00:37:32   then the plot kicks in and there's like [TS]

00:37:35   a half an hour where I could swear that [TS]

00:37:37   I may have had some sort of event where [TS]

00:37:41   I've completely lost what has happened [TS]

00:37:43   in half and it's good that is a fair [TS]

00:37:45   city no idea and then the end comes on [TS]

00:37:48   like oh well cool things are happening I [TS]

00:37:49   don't really know why but it seems cool [TS]

00:37:51   okay the end and there's a portion where [TS]

00:37:53   they just throw all these names at you [TS]

00:37:54   ran some of which you never find out [TS]

00:37:56   anything about like the guy both these [TS]

00:37:59   movies my wife turned moves like this [TS]

00:38:00   was this a double-cross them like I [TS]

00:38:02   guess I I don't know I'd no idea at this [TS]

00:38:05   point in the history of film noir that's [TS]

00:38:07   kind of not surprising because you had [TS]

00:38:09   like the big sleep is one of the sort of [TS]

00:38:11   bigger film noir and in that film it was [TS]

00:38:13   is running long so you had Howard Hawks [TS]

00:38:15   actually taking scenes out of the film [TS]

00:38:19   and they were a lot of the scenes that [TS]

00:38:20   actually made the plot make centuries to [TS]

00:38:21   see just to see if they could actually [TS]

00:38:23   still have a hit because of the main [TS]

00:38:25   characters and and and whether or not [TS]

00:38:27   people like it and that is apparently a [TS]

00:38:29   classical them not sure I understand why [TS]

00:38:31   so yeah they were able to do that you [TS]

00:38:33   can carve out huge parts of the plot [TS]

00:38:36   plot doesn't matter so much when you've [TS]

00:38:37   got enough atmosphere in a way that are [TS]

00:38:39   six fun to watch and and even in the [TS]

00:38:41   book of The Big Sleep [TS]

00:38:42   you know it people kept asking Chandler [TS]

00:38:45   will have what about this guy who died [TS]

00:38:47   who killed him like I don't know [TS]

00:38:49   ya know I I senior call Howard Hawks [TS]

00:38:51   called up having Chandler to ask yes yes [TS]

00:38:54   and a what happens here you got me pal [TS]

00:38:57   I left as an exercise for the reader ya [TS]

00:39:01   know I have to say I mean I this is this [TS]

00:39:04   is one of my favorite film Noirs so you [TS]

00:39:08   are by no means alone you and me lor [TS]

00:39:10   yeah i just i i i actually it can laugh [TS]

00:39:14   at all that i may not like me even Nick [TS]

00:39:15   the Greek mechanic i am ia just made me [TS]

00:39:18   laugh right you're locked room and show [TS]

00:39:21   respect it's so far over the top and the [TS]

00:39:25   end the same with the with the woman at [TS]

00:39:26   the at the pool party where she's like [TS]

00:39:28   kissing him and and all that right like [TS]

00:39:30   when she sees him it's like okay about [TS]

00:39:33   you I i found that amusing on on a level [TS]

00:39:36   so yeah I actually and enjoyed it quite [TS]

00:39:38   a bit except for the part where I was [TS]

00:39:40   scratching my head going ok I don't know [TS]

00:39:42   what is happening now but let's just [TS]

00:39:43   assume that my cameras up to no good and [TS]

00:39:46   these drugs are gonna beat him up and I [TS]

00:39:49   just shrugged Mike I don't [TS]

00:39:50   and seriously the read the wikipedia [TS]

00:39:52   summary it's like literally the first 10 [TS]

00:39:54   minutes of the movie and then the end [TS]

00:39:56   and in between there like I don't know [TS]

00:39:58   and then eventually this happens so it [TS]

00:40:00   turns out turns out is there's a box [TS]

00:40:03   ok I didn't think this was too bad to [TS]

00:40:04   follow it the first time I didn't [TS]

00:40:06   obviously but after some pausing and in [TS]

00:40:09   some diagrams and charts and what about [TS]

00:40:13   what happened every time I you two [TS]

00:40:15   arrows boxes and so forth subscription [TS]

00:40:17   to do I didn't have a huge problem [TS]

00:40:19   following it i just i think for all of [TS]

00:40:21   the things you mentioned Jason that are [TS]

00:40:23   over-the-top I that made me not so much [TS]

00:40:25   like I think once you get past about [TS]

00:40:26   1952 my interest in film sort of starts [TS]

00:40:29   to fall off pretty drastically and this [TS]

00:40:31   fits right into that it just it they're [TS]

00:40:34   trying different things and sometimes it [TS]

00:40:35   works and most of the time it doesn't [TS]

00:40:37   and just gets weirder and this this [TS]

00:40:39   falls into that weird it's weird that [TS]

00:40:40   doesn't do it for me [TS]

00:40:42   we should mention its influence because [TS]

00:40:44   this is obviously the influence on repo [TS]

00:40:45   man and pulp fiction right the right [TS]

00:40:47   yeah MacGuffin with that the glowing on [TS]

00:40:50   the inside [TS]

00:40:51   no although in this they actually [TS]

00:40:53   explain what it is yeah i know it is [TS]

00:40:55   much better and sorta yeah it's an [TS]

00:40:57   isotope I can't they don't work this way [TS]

00:41:00   but I'm sure whatever your nuclear fuel [TS]

00:41:03   cells don't work like that you know [TS]

00:41:05   we're sleeping pills but it's Marsellus [TS]

00:41:07   Wallace's soul [TS]

00:41:08   sure i liked it i will say this for it [TS]

00:41:11   it was not boring yep and almost every [TS]

00:41:14   other noir I've ever seen [TS]

00:41:15   there's at least a 30-minute period [TS]

00:41:17   where I'm ready to drift off and this [TS]

00:41:19   did not happen yeah that's exactly what [TS]

00:41:22   the screenwriter said to when they said [TS]

00:41:24   you know what does this mean what'd he [TS]

00:41:25   do why did you do this is it didn't care [TS]

00:41:27   i just want to have fun every scene has [TS]

00:41:29   to have something funny going on and [TS]

00:41:30   something that you're interested in like [TS]

00:41:31   a cat and ya know you and I feel a [TS]

00:41:35   little filthy having seen this film [TS]

00:41:37   especially the bits where peace pimping [TS]

00:41:40   out Delta oh yeah unless we all just [TS]

00:41:43   have to be happy in the knowledge that [TS]

00:41:45   two years later my camera died of armed [TS]

00:41:47   cancer and that would be and so on [TS]

00:41:49   during the apocalypse I think apparently [TS]

00:41:52   but yeah mm got home Bob [TS]

00:41:55   well I i do enjoy that the doctor in the [TS]

00:41:59   the one the one on camera seen that he [TS]

00:42:01   has it is like I know it's Pandora's by [TS]

00:42:05   heat like quotes like four different [TS]

00:42:08   yes four different mythological or thing [TS]

00:42:13   we get it you you studied humanities in [TS]

00:42:16   addition to becoming a scientist the [TS]

00:42:17   best part of that is the fact that that [TS]

00:42:20   that he's got this very important piece [TS]

00:42:22   of information to convey to Gabrielle / [TS]

00:42:25   lily which is don't open the bottom of [TS]

00:42:27   the box i know yet i say to you as if i [TS]

00:42:29   am all of sarah said you're not getting [TS]

00:42:32   through paypal he has the time to get [TS]

00:42:35   all of that out there she's I'm he's got [TS]

00:42:37   his priorities in line and with with all [TS]

00:42:39   of the amazingly sexist things in this [TS]

00:42:43   movie I actually found that seemed the [TS]

00:42:45   most sexist because that doctor is [TS]

00:42:48   talking to her literally like she's like [TS]

00:42:51   not even a child like she just cannot [TS]

00:42:53   understand being a woman and knowing [TS]

00:42:55   your place you don't understand these [TS]

00:42:57   complicated things and I'm sitting there [TS]

00:42:59   thinking Lily she's got the gun guy [TS]

00:43:01   she's probably got one over on you here [TS]

00:43:03   but he has no idea this particular woman [TS]

00:43:06   though clearly is addled in some way [TS]

00:43:08   based on the way she act she's playing [TS]

00:43:10   dumb through most of the film and then [TS]

00:43:11   it's only at the very end that she kept [TS]

00:43:13   her voice even change when she pulls out [TS]

00:43:15   the gun and I think maybe he was just a [TS]

00:43:17   little too wrapped up in his own [TS]

00:43:19   pontifications to notice [TS]

00:43:21   she had switched so the graphic I don't [TS]

00:43:23   know I'm ontological rate up nuts at the [TS]

00:43:25   way she turns on a dime and she's like [TS]

00:43:27   afraid and then she wants to kiss on [TS]

00:43:29   hammer and also she opens the box at the [TS]

00:43:31   end which is crazy she opens a real wide [TS]

00:43:34   and she keeps opening it [TS]

00:43:36   Mary Martin peter out for the part of [TS]

00:43:39   Peter Pan she never got over them yeah [TS]

00:43:41   clearly what's like the scene with the [TS]

00:43:43   landlord killed me just because you know [TS]

00:43:46   hammers talking to the landlord and the [TS]

00:43:47   landlord's wife is right there and she [TS]

00:43:49   keeps repeating everything and finally [TS]

00:43:50   hammer just says tell it to shut up and [TS]

00:43:53   this long pause and then the labor goes [TS]

00:43:55   shut up why is that even here all right [TS]

00:44:01   kiss me deadly let me tell you briefly [TS]

00:44:05   about our sponsor its smile software you [TS]

00:44:09   may know them as the makers of text [TS]

00:44:51   characters just a couple abbreviations [TS]

00:44:53   and boom big long strings of text that [TS]

00:44:55   would take a long time for you to type [TS]

00:44:57   on the little iOS keyboard can just come [TS]

00:45:00   shooting right out of that keyboard [TS]

00:45:09   shortcuts that you set up on your Mac [TS]

00:45:11   will be available to you in any [TS]

00:45:12   application now it was true some apps on [TS]

00:45:15   iOS before could use text expander but [TS]

00:45:17   they had to build in text expander [TS]

00:45:19   support specifically and some apps [TS]

00:45:21   didn't do it in the Apple apps [TS]

00:45:23   absolutely didn't do it but all the apps [TS]

00:45:25   that are using this keyboard can get the [TS]

00:45:28   advantages of text expander so it's a [TS]

00:45:30   huge leap forward in terms of typing [TS]

00:45:32   productivity on iOS [TS]

00:45:33   and text expander respects your privacy [TS]

00:45:37   they've got a website entry up it's a [TS]

00:45:39   blog entry called what about that scary [TS]

00:45:43   when you enable a custom keyboard they [TS]

00:45:45   have a very clear privacy policy they [TS]

00:45:47   respect your privacy and now the custom [TS]

00:45:56   crazy custom keyboard layouts in case [TS]

00:45:58   qwerty is not enough for you [TS]

00:46:01   so here's where you need to go visit [TS]

00:46:02   smile software.com / incomparable and [TS]

00:46:22   can make the difference by shortening [TS]

00:46:24   what you have to type in order to get [TS]

00:46:26   long strings of text and thank you so [TS]

00:46:27   much to smile software and text expander [TS]

00:46:30   touch three for sponsoring the [TS]

00:46:31   incomparable we also watched out of the [TS]

00:46:34   past will do you want to explain out of [TS]

00:46:38   the past to us [TS]

00:46:39   oh I don't think I could uh huh well so [TS]

00:46:41   well Robert Mitchum is in its so out of [TS]

00:46:44   the pass we we start in any town USA [TS]

00:46:47   which is bridgeport California report [TS]

00:46:50   California's right on the other side of [TS]

00:46:52   the Sierra Nevadas new the Nevada border [TS]

00:46:54   exactly hundred miles from where I grew [TS]

00:46:56   up to the mile small mountain town [TS]

00:46:59   yep and Robert Mitchum is running a gas [TS]

00:47:03   station they have of course but he's not [TS]

00:47:06   really a gas station attendant is he [TS]

00:47:08   Jason he's not and it's not that's not [TS]

00:47:10   even his real name [TS]

00:47:12   no he's a man with those asked what ya [TS]

00:47:15   know seriously and someone comes from [TS]

00:47:19   out of his past you to all who ought to [TS]

00:47:25   uh [TS]

00:47:27   bring him back into I don't know anyhow [TS]

00:47:29   he's cruising along the 395 as you do [TS]

00:47:32   yeah joe mr. job yes so John missed it [TS]

00:47:36   one of his old associates uh stumbles [TS]

00:47:38   across this gas station and says oh boy [TS]

00:47:40   oh boy [TS]

00:47:41   hey I finally found you a there's [TS]

00:47:43   there's a guy who wants to meet you and [TS]

00:47:45   that's when licks his cigarette a deaf [TS]

00:47:47   kid so yeah always a bad yeah yes I [TS]

00:47:49   Robert Mitchum is assistant at the gas [TS]

00:47:52   station we should point out is a very [TS]

00:47:54   helpful deaf kid which will come in [TS]

00:47:57   handy later and help me Hester yeah [TS]

00:48:00   which will also kind of the movie yeah [TS]

00:48:03   spoiler alert um so Robert Mitchum has [TS]

00:48:07   to go see a guy and he gets the girl [TS]

00:48:09   that he's sweet on in town to drive him [TS]

00:48:12   up there and he basically tells her his [TS]

00:48:14   life story which he's been hiding up [TS]

00:48:17   until this point and so we start off as [TS]

00:48:18   very nearly as awkward incidentally as [TS]

00:48:21   the two-hour description to franklin [TS]

00:48:24   delano roosevelt and happened James yeah [TS]

00:48:26   if it is this is the thing about half of [TS]

00:48:29   the past it begins with a guy narrating [TS]

00:48:32   a flashback that goes on forever about [TS]

00:48:34   40 minutes adding into some detail about [TS]

00:48:37   his past love that doesn't necessarily [TS]

00:48:39   need to be brought up so we discover [TS]

00:48:41   that instead of being a kindly gas [TS]

00:48:43   station attendant he used to be a [TS]

00:48:44   hard-bitten private eye and he was hired [TS]

00:48:46   at one point by Kirk Douglas to hunt [TS]

00:48:49   down a coveted shot Kirk Douglas and [TS]

00:48:51   made off with forty thousand dollars of [TS]

00:48:53   his money which was quite a bit of money [TS]

00:48:56   in 1947 and so he chases her down to [TS]

00:48:59   Mexico [TS]

00:49:00   and in the process of doing so falls in [TS]

00:49:04   love with her which is pretty not a [TS]

00:49:06   really good plan again spoiler well [TS]

00:49:08   we're told they fall in love [TS]

00:49:10   I don't think we ever see it but we'll [TS]

00:49:13   get to that in a moment anyhow Kirk [TS]

00:49:15   Douglas shows up in Mexico and robert [TS]

00:49:18   mitchum decide say this is a this is [TS]

00:49:20   about the time that i make like I [TS]

00:49:21   couldn't find her and me in the me and [TS]

00:49:24   the new mrs. we we live off 44 points [TS]

00:49:27   north while telling telling Kirk Douglas [TS]

00:49:29   that she must have escaped down south so [TS]

00:49:32   they go and they run into Robert Mitchum [TS]

00:49:35   is old partner who ends up following [TS]

00:49:38   them and is going to blackmail them and [TS]

00:49:41   it's at that point that the that the [TS]

00:49:43   lady friend who's played by jane greer [TS]

00:49:45   shoots Robert mentions partner and [TS]

00:49:48   that's when they split up and robert [TS]

00:49:50   mitchum begins his new life as the gas [TS]

00:49:52   station attendant in in bridgeport well [TS]

00:49:55   hehe i guess he be [TS]

00:49:57   he hides the body or berry berry is the [TS]

00:49:59   bonding and and that brings us back to [TS]

00:50:01   present-day and out of the past [TS]

00:50:05   yes we ran out of the ground and into [TS]

00:50:08   the present and we shine up there we we [TS]

00:50:10   we arrived at Kirk Douglases Lake Tahoe [TS]

00:50:13   mansion which has a lovely few and it [TS]

00:50:16   turns out that no Jane Greer is now back [TS]

00:50:19   with with kirk douglas and Kirk Douglas [TS]

00:50:22   has a favor that he's going to ask [TS]

00:50:23   robert mitchum to do and Robert mentions [TS]

00:50:25   gotta do it because well you kind of [TS]

00:50:27   dropped the ball and that whole finding [TS]

00:50:29   this girl thing and falling in love with [TS]

00:50:31   her and uh betrayed my trust and the job [TS]

00:50:36   that Kirk Douglas has is I'm a horrible [TS]

00:50:39   tax cheat and you've got to go find the [TS]

00:50:41   the books that I've been keeping [TS]

00:50:45   separately before they fall into the [TS]

00:50:48   hands of the Internal Revenue Service [TS]

00:50:50   and get those books for me and we'll [TS]

00:50:53   just call it square and robert mitchum [TS]

00:50:55   knows that he's being set up and indeed [TS]

00:50:57   he is because not only uh does the the [TS]

00:51:01   tax lawyer get murdered the books are [TS]

00:51:06   a made off with and they're gonna be [TS]

00:51:07   sent to kirk douglas but because Robert [TS]

00:51:09   Mitchum sort of knows that he's being [TS]

00:51:11   set up he gets the the phone ebooks [TS]

00:51:13   first and he's able to strike a deal [TS]

00:51:15   with the with Kirk Douglas where it's [TS]

00:51:17   basically hey you [TS]

00:51:20   you uh you don't duh get me in trouble [TS]

00:51:25   for that that partner of mine that got [TS]

00:51:28   shot we send Jane Greer up the river and [TS]

00:51:31   and and now we call it square well Jane [TS]

00:51:33   Greer doesn't like that so much so so [TS]

00:51:35   she plugs Kirk Douglas she's gonna [TS]

00:51:37   decide to start a new with Robert [TS]

00:51:39   Mitchum robert mitchum besides that's [TS]

00:51:41   not going to be good so I tips off the [TS]

00:51:43   cops that they're they're coming and it [TS]

00:51:46   they died in a hail of gunfire at the [TS]

00:51:47   end of the movie and Robert Mitchum is [TS]

00:51:49   somewhat redeemed for his a horrible [TS]

00:51:51   choices in life and again that's the [TS]

00:51:53   500-yard view this is the problem with [TS]

00:51:55   filming where I realize this about five [TS]

00:51:57   seconds before this podcast began I'm [TS]

00:51:59   gonna have to summarize these plots yeah [TS]

00:52:01   and it is like describing a game of [TS]

00:52:05   chess when you thought it was a game of [TS]

00:52:08   checkers [TS]

00:52:10   so I open it up to the floor again [TS]

00:52:14   you've got an idea that there's a lot of [TS]

00:52:16   fishing is important in this movie that [TS]

00:52:18   well yes yes we should mention Kirk [TS]

00:52:21   Douglas has a goon goon named Jojo is [TS]

00:52:24   not very good at the job of being a goon [TS]

00:52:26   no learned throughout this movie is [TS]

00:52:27   curtis says Joe couldn't find a printer [TS]

00:52:30   in the Bible and so at one point Joe is [TS]

00:52:37   sent tail Robert Mitchum and he does so [TS]

00:52:40   by following the the Deaf kid and he [TS]

00:52:44   spies Robert Mitchum and he's got gonna [TS]

00:52:46   shoot you Robert Mitchum but all the [TS]

00:52:48   Deaf kid turns around and uses fly [TS]

00:52:50   casting skills to crap job by the arm [TS]

00:52:52   and pull off a cliff into the Walker [TS]

00:52:55   river [TS]

00:52:55   yeah Billy Joe instantly he's a fly cast [TS]

00:52:58   wizard [TS]

00:52:59   yeah that deaf dumb accomplished sure [TS]

00:53:01   casts a mean bastard below [TS]

00:53:03   the inspiration for Tommy this movie [TS]

00:53:06   it's a little-known fact [TS]

00:53:07   wow yeah but that isn't that is one of [TS]

00:53:10   the more unique death scenes I've ever [TS]

00:53:12   seen where a guy is standing on a cliff [TS]

00:53:13   top he's hooked by a fishing line and [TS]

00:53:16   pulled to his death [TS]

00:53:17   I'm getting a very strong fishing think [TS]

00:53:20   it is awesome by the way you just gotta [TS]

00:53:22   get them off balance [TS]

00:53:23   that's it she was standing right on the [TS]

00:53:25   edge as may have become apparent when I [TS]

00:53:27   was quoting Kirk Douglas there i love [TS]

00:53:29   kirk douglas in this movie is nicely [TS]

00:53:32   menacing he is so menacing and so and [TS]

00:53:36   enjoys being menacing so much in every [TS]

00:53:38   line that he says is just dripping with [TS]

00:53:40   double meaning this is like his second [TS]

00:53:42   movie [TS]

00:53:43   yeah and every threat that he makes is [TS]

00:53:46   is just so said through through a smile [TS]

00:53:49   and know he is he is a delight to watch [TS]

00:53:52   he's it's charming in the most oily sort [TS]

00:53:55   of way I didn't love it when he shows up [TS]

00:53:58   in Mexico I'm just here to see a man [TS]

00:54:00   about a horse [TS]

00:54:01   literally I'm on my way to Mexico City [TS]

00:54:04   see a man about a horse [TS]

00:54:06   mhm great you know when we were emailing [TS]

00:54:10   about what we were gonna watch I was [TS]

00:54:12   like oh cool to fillmore I've never seen [TS]

00:54:14   before I was so excited and I watched [TS]

00:54:16   kiss me deadly and that was the thing [TS]

00:54:18   that I did and then I and then I watched [TS]

00:54:21   out of the past and the credits hadn't [TS]

00:54:23   even finished when I was like oh my god [TS]

00:54:25   I've seen this before i watched a lot of [TS]

00:54:27   old movies and I have a terrible memory [TS]

00:54:29   for titles so it was it was just a [TS]

00:54:31   matter of 35 seconds and was like oh my [TS]

00:54:34   goodness i have seen this before and I [TS]

00:54:35   was excited is so take it in now now yes [TS]

00:54:39   she mentioned this was remade in the [TS]

00:54:42   early eighties as against all odds [TS]

00:54:44   starring jeff bridges in the robert [TS]

00:54:47   mitchum roll rachel ward in the jane [TS]

00:54:49   greer or roll and james woods in the [TS]

00:54:54   Kirk Douglas role that is not lateral [TS]

00:54:57   movement that is not not no probably be [TS]

00:55:01   okay with james woods in that role but I [TS]

00:55:03   don't know what anybody else and and [TS]

00:55:05   jane greer as her character's mother and [TS]

00:55:07   I believe alex karras is as as Joe own [TS]

00:55:10   couldn't find couldn't find a prayer in [TS]

00:55:12   the Bible [TS]

00:55:13   yeah who plays the Deaf kid I don't you [TS]

00:55:17   know I've never actually seen the movie [TS]

00:55:18   i've only seen the music video [TS]

00:55:20   I've only I've only seen Phil Collins [TS]

00:55:22   this just an empty space [TS]

00:55:25   fun fact about against all odds Phil [TS]

00:55:27   Collins was turned down to sing that [TS]

00:55:29   song at the Oscars yeah they didn't know [TS]

00:55:30   who the hell would they had a dancing [TS]

00:55:32   singing it instead [TS]

00:55:34   yeah yeah a dancer sang again so my [TS]

00:55:38   terrible thing [TS]

00:55:40   cathy is not very good in this movie I [TS]

00:55:42   find her I find that yeah he gave i find [TS]

00:55:45   that character completely uninteresting [TS]

00:55:46   I find the actress uninteresting they [TS]

00:55:48   act as if she's interesting and yet she [TS]

00:55:51   isn't their relationship is completely [TS]

00:55:53   unbelievable at all points I i think [TS]

00:55:57   this is the central flaw of our past [TS]

00:55:59   which I'm gonna say again I enjoy this [TS]

00:56:01   movie I wanted to but that at the end [TS]

00:56:04   but yeah she is problematic because she [TS]

00:56:06   is the femme fatale who inspires no [TS]

00:56:09   fatalities but she causes and very [TS]

00:56:13   little and causes a few but she's not [TS]

00:56:15   when they go to alcohol Acapulco it's [TS]

00:56:17   like they have they have some snappy [TS]

00:56:20   dialogue that is kind of not earned and [TS]

00:56:23   then they go to the beach to kiss and [TS]

00:56:25   then they're in love [TS]

00:56:26   I'm Mike like it's really good the tour [TS]

00:56:28   guide sponded I have no problem with [TS]

00:56:30   that because so that's the kind of a [TS]

00:56:33   hallmark of some of the films like of [TS]

00:56:35   that era [TS]

00:56:35   it's it if they don't necessarily go in [TS]

00:56:38   for too much character development [TS]

00:56:39   you're just sort of expected to make [TS]

00:56:40   those that those you know yourself and [TS]

00:56:42   she was very pretty and they had that [TS]

00:56:44   dialogue so for being that was good [TS]

00:56:46   enough [TS]

00:56:46   it was alright with it the problem with [TS]

00:56:47   that is they have the the scene where [TS]

00:56:49   Kirk Douglas is hiring robert mitchum [TS]

00:56:51   neee well hey why are you sending me to [TS]

00:56:54   find her there are a lot of Dame's the [TS]

00:56:55   rope in the world [TS]

00:56:57   oh when you see her you'll know but no I [TS]

00:57:00   know I don't know I do entertainment [TS]

00:57:05   I thought she was lovely and I thought [TS]

00:57:07   the actors did a pretty good job with it [TS]

00:57:08   when you're bonding moment is do you [TS]

00:57:10   like to gamble [TS]

00:57:10   not with a wheel that's it mm that's the [TS]

00:57:13   kind of chemistry that works for me it [TS]

00:57:16   was it yes it's silly but I like it the [TS]

00:57:18   bonding moment [TS]

00:57:19   is the is jose rodriguez who comes in ya [TS]

00:57:21   farmers to give the door knockers them [TS]

00:57:23   rings and earrings and then gets paid by [TS]

00:57:26   Bailey just before he recommends the [TS]

00:57:28   donkey show [TS]

00:57:29   yes oh no that's the meat cute and you [TS]

00:57:31   know we do have to say something from [TS]

00:57:33   the past the the ethnic characters [TS]

00:57:35   actually makes sense within the setting [TS]

00:57:37   and they are overdone and over the top [TS]

00:57:39   so that the Federated scapula teal yeah [TS]

00:57:42   I just I just didn't find that the [TS]

00:57:43   cactus interesting you know [TS]

00:57:45   well she and and who is the these the [TS]

00:57:48   small-town girl that Robert Mitchum is [TS]

00:57:49   sweet on now they are just real drips in [TS]

00:57:52   this movie [TS]

00:57:53   yeah there's no there's no nice way of [TS]

00:57:54   saying it and it really is underscored [TS]

00:57:56   by by the fact when Rhonda Fleming shows [TS]

00:57:58   up she is the Secretary of the lawyer [TS]

00:58:01   the tax lawyer that Robert Mitchum is [TS]

00:58:03   supposed to steal the stuff from their [TS]

00:58:05   ends up getting framed for murder for [TS]

00:58:07   she is in like maybe two or three scenes [TS]

00:58:09   and she is great she is is she pops and [TS]

00:58:14   she has she has verve and she has been [TS]

00:58:16   and you sit there in co now why wasn't [TS]

00:58:19   she cast the the role of Cathy because [TS]

00:58:21   at least then you could see it's someone [TS]

00:58:23   that that can match wits with Robert [TS]

00:58:26   Mitchum was notable and in some way [TS]

00:58:28   yeah well Jean Grey was it she was [TS]

00:58:30   pretty actually generate had been um she [TS]

00:58:33   had some sort of policy when she was [TS]

00:58:34   young and with had a part of her face [TS]

00:58:36   paralyzed and all the well now I feel [TS]

00:58:38   that Erica thank you and all of the [TS]

00:58:41   exercises that she had to do to get the [TS]

00:58:43   emotion back in her face sort of helped [TS]

00:58:45   push her toward a sort of acting that [TS]

00:58:47   used her face a lot to express emotion [TS]

00:58:50   and I think that's kind of what she [TS]

00:58:51   became known for and I think she does [TS]

00:58:53   that a lot i think i think that her way [TS]

00:58:56   of encoding is is more just not so much [TS]

00:58:58   the the dialogue in the emotion in the [TS]

00:59:00   speech but the really you know what [TS]

00:59:03   looks on her face when she just looks so [TS]

00:59:05   upset or so completely feeling list or [TS]

00:59:08   you know from one scene to the next [TS]

00:59:09   thing I worked for me I actually thought [TS]

00:59:11   she was pretty good [TS]

00:59:12   she you know she's not she's not really [TS]

00:59:15   a big character but she's she's got some [TS]

00:59:18   subtle tease her post [TS]

00:59:21   I'm with snow understand what I'm going [TS]

00:59:23   to immediately fall in love with her the [TS]

00:59:25   second i see your bit is a bit [TS]

00:59:26   ridiculous but I and later when trim [TS]

00:59:28   when there's the double-double cross the [TS]

00:59:29   briefcase and I thought I sounded like [TS]

00:59:31   she was totally and [TS]

00:59:32   leave a bottle she didn't work didn't [TS]

00:59:33   work for me and she set up I mean that [TS]

00:59:35   that's what phil was saying to is that [TS]

00:59:37   she set up to be well you when you see [TS]

00:59:40   your you know and she's like cash fine [TS]

00:59:42   she's fine but she didn't know she I did [TS]

00:59:44   I just I didn't find any chemistry [TS]

00:59:45   between her and mitch mitchum is like a [TS]

00:59:48   force of nature he's like John he's so I [TS]

00:59:52   you know angular and and and visceral [TS]

00:59:55   and weird even and then she's just she's [TS]

00:59:59   also present [TS]

00:59:59   also present [TS]

01:00:00   and you know i kinda liked the bit where [TS]

01:00:02   he's fighting with his partner and and [TS]

01:00:04   she's watching it and she's got kind of [TS]

01:00:06   a little smile on her face like she's [TS]

01:00:08   really kind of enjoying watching the [TS]

01:00:10   beatings requiring you know and of [TS]

01:00:11   course she busts out with the gun [TS]

01:00:13   because she really liked shootin guys [TS]

01:00:14   he's no Veronica Lake she's no Rita [TS]

01:00:16   Hayworth she really does like shooting [TS]

01:00:18   people though that is not as it's true i [TS]

01:00:20   don't know maybe I just appreciated the [TS]

01:00:21   fact that that towards the end of the [TS]

01:00:23   film became evident that well it wasn't [TS]

01:00:27   clear earlier on she's kind of been [TS]

01:00:28   pulling the strings all yelling that was [TS]

01:00:30   great seeing that's a great scene where [TS]

01:00:31   she lets them get in that like it's the [TS]

01:00:34   it is the punchy estate punch-up i have [TS]

01:00:37   seen in a movie a long time just punch [TS]

01:00:39   after punch after punch and when finally [TS]

01:00:41   we've reached the end she just shoots [TS]

01:00:43   the guy and make him think you didn't [TS]

01:00:45   have to kill him [TS]

01:00:47   she's like yeah I did she's told home [TS]

01:00:48   she's totally cold about it and well and [TS]

01:00:50   an earlier she says oh with didn't die [TS]

01:00:53   I'm sorry he didn't die I mean she's [TS]

01:00:55   cold that much is fascinating about this [TS]

01:00:58   care called around the heart she's got a [TS]

01:01:00   couple of good line readings like that [TS]

01:01:01   one and it towards the end when she's [TS]

01:01:04   finally getting Mitchum to take off to [TS]

01:01:06   Mexico with her and and he tells her put [TS]

01:01:09   a few think she's going to pack and just [TS]

01:01:11   put a few things in for me and she says [TS]

01:01:12   I have and it's her reading I that is [TS]

01:01:15   great that this the the real selling [TS]

01:01:18   point of out of the past for me is the [TS]

01:01:20   script as it has just some some great [TS]

01:01:23   some great hard-boiled hard-bitten lines [TS]

01:01:27   in there and I don't know she can't be [TS]

01:01:29   all that bad well she comes closer than [TS]

01:01:30   anyone elses yeah that was great and the [TS]

01:01:33   other one I really liked is is when [TS]

01:01:36   everybody dies honey I don't want to do [TS]

01:01:39   it either but if I do I want to be last [TS]

01:01:41   yeah that was my god I'm gonna be the [TS]

01:01:43   last couple minutes [TS]

01:01:45   fantastic and lay in that kind of my god [TS]

01:01:47   that was great yeah they did don't you [TS]

01:01:49   believe me baby i don't care of my [TS]

01:01:53   gallows hi baby [TS]

01:01:54   my biggest problem with this with this [TS]

01:01:56   movie which I did end up liking [TS]

01:01:58   eventually was that initially like in [TS]

01:02:01   the very opening segment there's a [TS]

01:02:03   couple of conversations between Marty [TS]

01:02:05   who works at the diner and and and Joe [TS]

01:02:08   and then I alien Joe have a conversation [TS]

01:02:09   and these conversations are like ninety [TS]

01:02:12   percent innuendo and cliches and has no [TS]

01:02:14   idea what they're talking to no idea and [TS]

01:02:16   I'm just shaking my head going these [TS]

01:02:17   these first of all these conversations [TS]

01:02:18   are way too snappy by has so snaggle [TS]

01:02:21   that are having them and it's supposed [TS]

01:02:23   to be the exposition guys I'm supposed [TS]

01:02:25   to be able to pick up on this and I I [TS]

01:02:27   felt completely lost its a slow starting [TS]

01:02:29   movie it really it annoy it doesn't take [TS]

01:02:32   off until Kirk Douglas yes [TS]

01:02:34   yeah well and then but see if you're [TS]

01:02:35   totally rate it's it snappy dialogue is [TS]

01:02:37   supposed to be like snappy dialogue with [TS]

01:02:39   you're like oh I really like how these [TS]

01:02:40   people are giving and taking when [TS]

01:02:41   everybody speaks in superfast snappy [TS]

01:02:44   dialogue it just becomes like I don't [TS]

01:02:46   know it's it's confusing and weird and [TS]

01:02:48   like why is everybody talking like this [TS]

01:02:50   and that I definitely got that feeling [TS]

01:02:52   in the diner especially like what is [TS]

01:02:54   even happening here [TS]

01:02:56   yeah I was afraid at that point that it [TS]

01:02:57   was going to be that way the entire way [TS]

01:02:59   through yeah unfortunately it wasn't it [TS]

01:03:01   was still found I was irritated enough [TS]

01:03:03   by that possibly that i found kind of [TS]

01:03:06   the entire sequence in the past to be [TS]

01:03:08   kind of kind of boring honestly and then [TS]

01:03:10   when it when we were out of the past the [TS]

01:03:13   present i found it picked up nicely i [TS]

01:03:15   like the whole frame job plot but but [TS]

01:03:17   that that whole opening sequence just [TS]

01:03:20   didn't I also not a fan of grabbing of [TS]

01:03:22   the narration in that part in fact there [TS]

01:03:24   was one bit of narration that made me [TS]

01:03:26   laugh out loud because she says why [TS]

01:03:29   don't we go back to my place and it's [TS]

01:03:31   immediately followed by narration that [TS]

01:03:33   says it was the first time she mentioned [TS]

01:03:34   her place or going there she said it i [TS]

01:03:41   love that tile a generation I mean it's [TS]

01:03:44   just it's kind of cheesy thing that the [TS]

01:03:46   that the hallmark of some of some of the [TS]

01:03:48   more films of that particular area just [TS]

01:03:50   feels like self-parody at i know but the [TS]

01:03:53   thing is that the [TS]

01:03:54   time you know this was pre irony this is [TS]

01:03:56   the wrist as can be i just it gets me in [TS]

01:03:58   the heart i love it there's a lot of [TS]

01:04:00   reasons why this movie shouldn't work [TS]

01:04:02   and yet it does for me [TS]

01:04:04   oh I didn't even mention the bankbook [TS]

01:04:05   she leaves a bankbook but just one thing [TS]

01:04:07   that this is deposited forty thousand [TS]

01:04:09   dollars and it's ok it's open on the [TS]

01:04:12   very top of her purse and she walks away [TS]

01:04:13   I'll thats hilarious [TS]

01:04:15   it's like she should just have a bag [TS]

01:04:17   with a dollar sign up now if it weren't [TS]

01:04:21   for Michigan Kirk Douglas it probably [TS]

01:04:23   wouldn't work [TS]

01:04:24   no I wouldn't know but they're great [TS]

01:04:25   they're great but apparently it a the [TS]

01:04:28   both of them were kinda wary of being [TS]

01:04:32   upstaged by the other which added movie [TS]

01:04:35   free papabile on-screen tension whenever [TS]

01:04:38   the two of them are on screen together [TS]

01:04:40   that maybe they got along with each [TS]

01:04:42   other after this movie was made but they [TS]

01:04:44   surely did not get along with each other [TS]

01:04:46   during the filming and that that quite [TS]

01:04:49   that translates quite well onto the [TS]

01:04:51   screen and it's very appropriate and [TS]

01:04:53   helps out with the mood of the picture [TS]

01:04:55   yeah i like the fact that Mitchell's [TS]

01:04:58   character here is is almost always a [TS]

01:05:01   step or two ahead of the game which is a [TS]

01:05:03   nice change from the doors I've seen [TS]

01:05:06   where the lead is just getting dragged [TS]

01:05:07   around by events he always seems like [TS]

01:05:09   he's kinda with it and you know he's [TS]

01:05:11   he's smart enough to know that he's [TS]

01:05:12   being framed and he's smart enough to [TS]

01:05:14   hide the body although not smart enough [TS]

01:05:15   to hide it somewhere the police will [TS]

01:05:16   find a 10 minutes later but i find i [TS]

01:05:20   found that kind of a kind of a fun to [TS]

01:05:22   watch because it felt like almost like [TS]

01:05:24   the ferris bueller of ur's really yeah [TS]

01:05:26   and I also like the fact that you know [TS]

01:05:28   he he with his plan at the end is he [TS]

01:05:31   wants to pin the murders basically on [TS]

01:05:33   the people who actually committed them [TS]

01:05:35   shows already dead so he's like let's [TS]

01:05:37   let's pin the murder of this seals [TS]

01:05:38   lawyer guy on Joe he's the one that did [TS]

01:05:40   it and then you know send and [TS]

01:05:43   whatsherface up the river and she's the [TS]

01:05:44   one that shot his partner so to me this [TS]

01:05:47   movie is like the b-side to melt ease [TS]

01:05:49   Falcon and where you've got the the [TS]

01:05:51   detective who's one step ahead of [TS]

01:05:53   everyone and and there's there's there's [TS]

01:05:56   lots of how's he gonna get out of this [TS]

01:05:57   so i want to pin it on the people who [TS]

01:05:59   actually did it and write down to the [TS]

01:06:02   problem with I is the biggest problem i [TS]

01:06:04   have with maltese falcon is met Mary [TS]

01:06:06   Astor [TS]

01:06:07   in the femme fatale role just as the [TS]

01:06:10   biggest problem without the past is Jane [TS]

01:06:12   Greer so there you go you're palsy Jane [TS]

01:06:16   Greer however i'm gonna make the point [TS]

01:06:19   of it i would like one of every dress [TS]

01:06:22   that she wears actually in that [TS]

01:06:23   everybody else whereas in this movie [TS]

01:06:24   please that instead of the goal of mine [TS]

01:06:26   now even the waitress at the restaurant [TS]

01:06:29   okay all but one he got me there [TS]

01:06:33   wow what I i don't know i don't know [TS]

01:06:35   what else to say about this movie death [TS]

01:06:36   by fishing line that's a big thing that [TS]

01:06:38   happened you know I just think it's [TS]

01:06:39   weird that like okay so we got this this [TS]

01:06:41   seemingly nice deaf kid who helps out in [TS]

01:06:45   that by the end of the film he's a [TS]

01:06:46   cold-blooded murderer like he's gotta [TS]

01:06:48   live with that for the rest of my [TS]

01:06:49   savings what she's gonna shoot his buddy [TS]

01:06:52   he's saving his buddy that's true that [TS]

01:06:54   cult that's sure but still you UAE I [TS]

01:06:56   think you experiencing emotional fallout [TS]

01:06:58   from that sort of thing no matter what [TS]

01:06:59   the motivation was [TS]

01:07:00   that's right my you can't you can't [TS]

01:07:03   determine intent from the kid pulling [TS]

01:07:05   him down he's saving his friends et soon [TS]

01:07:07   the guy I'm there too quickly you know [TS]

01:07:09   defuse the situation either he's saving [TS]

01:07:11   his friend or he just really wanted to [TS]

01:07:13   go fishing and the line was a little bit [TS]

01:07:14   too long and it just puts an accident [TS]

01:07:16   one of the ways that he we know he's [TS]

01:07:18   ultimately a good kid because i was [TS]

01:07:19   selfless well not really selfless but [TS]

01:07:21   his action at the end when he kind of [TS]

01:07:22   lets the girlfriend get on with her life [TS]

01:07:25   and turns and see I do not diagnose care [TS]

01:07:28   for that anyway I thought that was a [TS]

01:07:29   kind of bizarre ending tell them you're [TS]

01:07:31   late [TS]

01:07:31   it's like the the lie that way should we [TS]

01:07:34   did good [TS]

01:07:35   Steve sort of said what it was so the [TS]

01:07:37   drippy girlfriend that he has she's [TS]

01:07:40   she's she's not a fish together what is [TS]

01:07:43   wrong with two people fishing together [TS]

01:07:45   in addition to being courted by robert [TS]

01:07:47   mitchum she's also being courted by this [TS]

01:07:49   that Dirk square jaw who I guess is some [TS]

01:07:52   sort of local state employment forestry [TS]

01:07:54   organization yeah and uh you know now [TS]

01:07:58   that I would know what it was if I could [TS]

01:08:00   figure out what the hell the lady at the [TS]

01:08:01   counter was saying in the oh yeah now [TS]

01:08:04   that Robert Mitchum is out of the [TS]

01:08:05   picture of course she's gonna go with [TS]

01:08:07   him but she she goes to the the Deaf kid [TS]

01:08:10   and says I've got to know was he really [TS]

01:08:13   going to go off with the equally drippy [TS]

01:08:15   gene career and is spoiler alert to the [TS]

01:08:19   audience no he was not [TS]

01:08:20   was just going along with with Jane [TS]

01:08:22   Greer cuz she was holding the gun to his [TS]

01:08:24   head [TS]

01:08:24   yeah and he he really did it also to [TS]

01:08:27   said that she would get her comeuppance [TS]

01:08:30   and so it is with holes the cops to set [TS]

01:08:34   it's a setup he's gonna set hops [TS]

01:08:36   yeah i was she really going off and [TS]

01:08:38   family really slick moment two words [TS]

01:08:40   like stay here honey I gotta make a [TS]

01:08:41   phone call [TS]

01:08:42   yeah okay I'll finish this conversation [TS]

01:08:44   later [TS]

01:08:45   go pack our things i gotta put myself a [TS]

01:08:47   drink I've gotta call the chi me for [TS]

01:08:49   myself 3mm so she says I gotta know what [TS]

01:08:54   she really going with him and the Deaf [TS]

01:08:57   kids sort of knots and cost ya [TS]

01:08:59   she was now you can go off and be with [TS]

01:09:01   your equally drippy Forrester guy and so [TS]

01:09:04   she doesn't update any friend was [TS]

01:09:06   draining you but I hope that makes you [TS]

01:09:08   feel better [TS]

01:09:09   yeah and then he turns to the the the [TS]

01:09:12   gas station sign and does the the wink [TS]

01:09:15   in the nod and that to me was just [TS]

01:09:18   really weird and hacking kind of [TS]

01:09:20   pointless yeah I would agree with the [TS]

01:09:22   end and that's who Keyser Soze was I [TS]

01:09:26   understand the motivation behind it [TS]

01:09:27   because he's you know that this is the [TS]

01:09:29   nineteen-forties women are lesser [TS]

01:09:31   creatures and they need to be protected [TS]

01:09:33   so that their feelings you know don't [TS]

01:09:35   get hurt so David will arise like a guy [TS]

01:09:37   with an idiot [TS]

01:09:38   we're going easy on her [TS]

01:09:42   yeah my wife maninder took exception [TS]

01:09:44   that one too she also have a rod Jason [TS]

01:09:47   yeah I I don't understand it but I don't [TS]

01:09:53   like Robert Mitchum could kill a guy [TS]

01:09:55   with a knitting needle is all I'm saying [TS]

01:09:57   or Rodwell that the Deaf kid that the [TS]

01:09:59   Deaf kid technically did kill somebody [TS]

01:10:00   with a rod and reel it did and real [TS]

01:10:03   totally did I was just saying that I [TS]

01:10:04   don't understand why they ended it that [TS]

01:10:07   way and it was supposed to be a sweet [TS]

01:10:08   touching thing but for me as a woman of [TS]

01:10:12   this in the next century a little bit [TS]

01:10:14   insulting 44 due to the next century [TS]

01:10:16   it's not that clever either a movie [TS]

01:10:20   seems to think that we give a damn what [TS]

01:10:21   happens to that girl and she's really [TS]

01:10:23   not a particularly major character other [TS]

01:10:25   than the fact that we've she's she had [TS]

01:10:27   to suffer through the rather extended [TS]

01:10:29   description i hate to keep using the [TS]

01:10:31   word drip but drip is [TS]

01:10:33   really and I liked her I thought she was [TS]

01:10:36   sweet hometown girl next door [TS]

01:10:39   I wanted him to end up with her how [TS]

01:10:41   terribly wrong you are [TS]

01:10:42   did you feel like at the end there had [TS]

01:10:44   to be some sort of a closure for her you [TS]

01:10:46   would have felt unsatisfied because [TS]

01:10:48   that's that's the impression i get for [TS]

01:10:49   why they added that ending up yeah I [TS]

01:10:51   suppose that say I need to feel like [TS]

01:10:53   she's no she's ok I need to know that [TS]

01:10:56   she's happy with Dirk square jaw forest [TS]

01:10:59   ranger I don't like the implication that [TS]

01:11:01   she couldn't go on with her life if even [TS]

01:11:04   if she had known that he was going to be [TS]

01:11:05   faithful to her I mean I feel like that [TS]

01:11:07   would be maybe a nicer way to start [TS]

01:11:09   continue one right in thinking oh he was [TS]

01:11:12   just going to leave me anyway like a [TS]

01:11:14   wily for with a bunch of anger rather [TS]

01:11:15   than some more memories yeah that's [TS]

01:11:17   right now because i already got the [TS]

01:11:18   corpse or he doesn't matter that he's [TS]

01:11:20   dead he was a jerk move on because [TS]

01:11:23   that's how feelings work [TS]

01:11:25   yeah totally these are these are [TS]

01:11:29   fascinating man this movie like the [TS]

01:11:31   other one that got into the middle where [TS]

01:11:32   there was the I'm being framed and [TS]

01:11:34   there's a kind of like the one he [TS]

01:11:35   figures out he sniffed out that it's [TS]

01:11:37   gonna be a frame job he actually says to [TS]

01:11:38   the guy i'm in a frame but then that was [TS]

01:11:42   like and I gotta taxes and I'm gonna go [TS]

01:11:44   get the thing before the other guy [TS]

01:11:45   that's there and get that moment of like [TS]

01:11:48   I don't know what's happening in many [TS]

01:11:49   ways the plot of this is more convoluted [TS]

01:11:51   than kiss me deadly or more to the point [TS]

01:11:53   the parts of the plot that don't involve [TS]

01:11:56   Kirk Douglas and robert mitchum crossing [TS]

01:11:59   swords running every literal sense I are [TS]

01:12:03   less interesting than the many Makka [TS]

01:12:06   nations going on and Kiss Me Deadly yeah [TS]

01:12:08   I was admit I was drinking a bit of wine [TS]

01:12:11   that i did get a little bit lost and [TS]

01:12:12   this is my second times don't know I [TS]

01:12:14   don't know yet the needs wine probably [TS]

01:12:17   help the journey because maybe instead [TS]

01:12:19   of these norms are fascinating to me [TS]

01:12:21   because they got the twisted plot and in [TS]

01:12:23   the end in the end for me when i get out [TS]

01:12:25   of them as the atmosphere and sometimes [TS]

01:12:27   the dialogue is is great and in this [TS]

01:12:29   movie they're so great dialogue but but [TS]

01:12:31   it's that it's that some of the [TS]

01:12:32   characters are great and you get that [TS]

01:12:34   you know it's i love in in kiss me [TS]

01:12:37   deadly especially there's the you know [TS]

01:12:39   bright sunny Los Angeles with it see you [TS]

01:12:41   bright and dark at the same time I you [TS]

01:12:44   know that's that's just a classic trade [TS]

01:12:46   market this stuff [TS]

01:12:47   there's in this movie and out of the [TS]

01:12:50   past one of the things that really [TS]

01:12:51   struck me is that literally the greatest [TS]

01:12:54   crutch I director could have is smoking [TS]

01:12:58   because like if nothing's happening in a [TS]

01:13:00   scene they just have a fiddle with their [TS]

01:13:03   cigarettes and he hasn't it it happens [TS]

01:13:05   endlessly and to the point where I just [TS]

01:13:08   kind of found it hilarious that the like [TS]

01:13:10   there's nothing else for them to do in [TS]

01:13:13   the scenes like I i would start playing [TS]

01:13:14   the game would be like what would Robert [TS]

01:13:16   Mitchum be doing in this scene if you [TS]

01:13:17   weren't fiddling with his cigarettes and [TS]

01:13:19   the answer generally was nothing he [TS]

01:13:21   wouldn't just be sitting there like a [TS]

01:13:23   lump for somebody needs to do a YouTube [TS]

01:13:26   cut of Anwar without smokes and just [TS]

01:13:28   know your brush out the cigarette so [TS]

01:13:30   they're just standing there waving their [TS]

01:13:31   answer and that's one of the reasons i [TS]

01:13:33   like laura is one of my favorite film [TS]

01:13:35   Noirs because he didn't smooth although [TS]

01:13:37   there is an incident where he he clocks [TS]

01:13:39   a gaylord in his office and then stops [TS]

01:13:42   to light a smoke I know [TS]

01:13:43   likewise it's and speaking of the [TS]

01:13:46   smoking part of shortly when when that [TS]

01:13:48   when Robert Mitchum gets back to the gas [TS]

01:13:50   station i think the first time yeah and [TS]

01:13:52   I'm always really loved it he flicks he [TS]

01:13:54   flicks a lit cigarette out his gas [TS]

01:13:56   station [TS]

01:13:57   hello what that's why they always got a [TS]

01:14:01   death wish [TS]

01:14:01   it's it's also shows a sign that he's [TS]

01:14:04   not really a guy with a castration but [TS]

01:14:06   that's not just realized there you can [TS]

01:14:08   see very little babysitter's missed it [TS]

01:14:10   that's gas station 101 friend yeah that [TS]

01:14:13   that that kind of amazing but you know [TS]

01:14:14   it again it's of a kind this is its own [TS]

01:14:16   genre it is you know that when you not [TS]

01:14:19   get into the argument about whether or [TS]

01:14:21   not Fillmore's and johnrandall that'll [TS]

01:14:23   take us another okay let me rephrase [TS]

01:14:25   that I I plead the court to rephrase [TS]

01:14:27   this [TS]

01:14:27   these these films are of a kind and they [TS]

01:14:30   have tropes and they have you what I [TS]

01:14:33   take away often is the atmosphere and [TS]

01:14:36   some of the characters and some of the [TS]

01:14:37   dialogue and not so much the plot and so [TS]

01:14:41   like out of the past it's about Mitchum [TS]

01:14:43   it's about Kirk Douglas and that's a [TS]

01:14:46   fight scene with all the punching and [TS]

01:14:48   then the guy just gets shot at the end [TS]

01:14:49   the poor guy to shoot him up front white [TS]

01:14:51   with a punching the sound that it is [TS]

01:14:54   compared to kiss me deadly this sound in [TS]

01:14:56   that scene was awesome and yet even was [TS]

01:14:58   watching a baseball game in the [TS]

01:15:00   same room and when that scene came on he [TS]

01:15:01   like looked up and looked over he's like [TS]

01:15:03   oh I love people stuff it's 1840 sound [TS]

01:15:06   of metal whereas in kiss me deadly [TS]

01:15:08   literally just lines of dialogue are [TS]

01:15:10   repeated because they didn't have any [TS]

01:15:12   other dialogue and its really not great [TS]

01:15:14   but miss ya that punch up is a good [TS]

01:15:17   that's a really good punch-up it's [TS]

01:15:18   brutal and flap flap flap plan after all [TS]

01:15:21   that work guy just gets shot [TS]

01:15:22   what was the point if why I work so hard [TS]

01:15:25   you could have shot him to begin with [TS]

01:15:27   what's the point really is the theme [TS]

01:15:28   that runs through the fruit water pretty [TS]

01:15:30   much what why bother the point when she [TS]

01:15:35   was really enjoying watching that she [TS]

01:15:36   really was actually got my shooting your [TS]

01:15:39   general climax in the end up and then [TS]

01:15:41   she needed a cigarette [TS]

01:15:42   that's right that's right I I feel like [TS]

01:15:44   we should mention this was directed by [TS]

01:15:46   jacques Turner who also directed cat [TS]

01:15:49   people [TS]

01:15:50   yep and same set of the cinematographer [TS]

01:15:53   those were his two movies [TS]

01:15:56   yeah you may know me from such films as [TS]

01:16:00   cat people and that's it [TS]

01:16:04   not the nineteen eighties remake of cat [TS]

01:16:06   pee no no the good one [TS]

01:16:09   well anything more about out of the past [TS]

01:16:10   now I think I think we've pretty much [TS]

01:16:12   beating these movies to death talk to [TS]

01:16:14   our way through the I think we pretty [TS]

01:16:16   much dissuaded people from watching [TS]

01:16:17   either of these movies which is a shame [TS]

01:16:19   because I enjoy both yes why don't I [TS]

01:16:23   still like out of the past I i will go [TS]

01:16:25   to bat for that one but I knew that [TS]

01:16:26   Kathy was bad when in the restaurant in [TS]

01:16:28   Mexico they order drinks and they get up [TS]

01:16:31   to leave Robert Mitchum drinks his but [TS]

01:16:33   Kathy leaves her shot of bourbon behind [TS]

01:16:36   sorry that was it right there [TS]

01:16:39   I knew she was a drip she she wasn't [TS]

01:16:42   even trying [TS]

01:16:43   no the only shot she likes her when she [TS]

01:16:46   plugs a guy with a shower has a long way [TS]

01:16:50   to go but I don't know over-the-top it [TS]

01:16:52   anyway she likes to shoot people this is [TS]

01:16:55   what I'm saying [TS]

01:16:56   yeah well I I i am glad that I watched [TS]

01:17:00   them am I I wouldn't say I whole [TS]

01:17:02   heartedly enjoyed either of them but i [TS]

01:17:04   enjoyed parts of both of them and i'm [TS]

01:17:05   happy to have seen them no good if I can [TS]

01:17:08   bring a little joy into your humdrum [TS]

01:17:10   lives [TS]

01:17:11   everything's been for nothing him i [TS]

01:17:15   would probably recommend these films to [TS]

01:17:16   somebody if I knew somebody that was the [TS]

01:17:18   sort of person to whom these films [TS]

01:17:20   should be recommended the right sort of [TS]

01:17:23   person but i'm not sure that i know [TS]

01:17:25   anybody that description so but i did [TS]

01:17:28   enjoy them both sporadic i'm glad i saw [TS]

01:17:30   kiss me deadly if only to reinforce the [TS]

01:17:33   fact that is did not at all the kind of [TS]

01:17:35   film noir that is my favorite it just [TS]

01:17:37   makes the ones that i like seeing even [TS]

01:17:39   better [TS]

01:17:40   good eats a silver lining now that the [TS]

01:17:45   outline of the shape of the movie that [TS]

01:17:47   defines the parts of other movies that [TS]

01:17:49   you like [TS]

01:17:50   yes the negative space really emphasis [TS]

01:17:53   on negative yeah yeah nite it won't [TS]

01:17:56   surprise anyone that I really enjoy some [TS]

01:17:58   door in general and I know really [TS]

01:18:00   enjoyed both of these not surprisingly [TS]

01:18:02   David i find that sort of surprising [TS]

01:18:03   yeah that really so it's all my [TS]

01:18:07   seventies sci-fi stories that me and [TS]

01:18:09   David have adventures going around boom [TS]

01:18:15   watch movies smacking people upside [TS]

01:18:17   hovel saving Cloris Leachman yeah as [TS]

01:18:20   always not let's not say things we can [TS]

01:18:22   take Cloris Leachman that's a pretty [TS]

01:18:25   brutal scene of of her being tortured to [TS]

01:18:28   death though I gotta say yeah yeah yeahs [TS]

01:18:30   five movie [TS]

01:18:31   yeah for 1955 that movie crosses a lot [TS]

01:18:34   of boundaries [TS]

01:18:35   hey fun fact the s the the Kefauver [TS]

01:18:38   Commission like side of that is the [TS]

01:18:41   number one threat to you more alert and [TS]

01:18:44   youth [TS]

01:18:45   yeah the movie that estes kefauver [TS]

01:18:47   doesn't want you to see ya the ADR and [TS]

01:18:51   that scene was actually quite effective [TS]

01:18:53   that was that was really disagree edge [TS]

01:18:55   she's a good screamer I gotta say in the [TS]

01:18:56   and then the sort of reveal well first [TS]

01:18:59   of all her legs are twitching which is [TS]

01:19:00   disturbing itself while you are bare [TS]

01:19:03   legs the lower halves of them sort of [TS]

01:19:05   twitching as she screams and then that [TS]

01:19:07   the reveal of I guess it pans up a [TS]

01:19:09   little from the dr shoes which it has [TS]

01:19:11   film as some sort of a weird obsession [TS]

01:19:13   with and you see he's holding something [TS]

01:19:14   I assume it's pliers it looks kind of [TS]

01:19:17   like a bottle opener but either one is a [TS]

01:19:19   little disturbing [TS]

01:19:21   no it's yeah the scene of her legs [TS]

01:19:23   twitching it's just that [TS]

01:19:24   in my memory I will never get that out I [TS]

01:19:26   need to wash my brain with bleach and [TS]

01:19:29   it's not clear from his his [TS]

01:19:30   pontificating afterwards whether she has [TS]

01:19:32   died in the process or she's been [TS]

01:19:33   knocked out [TS]

01:19:34   I think she's I don't know if you tried [TS]

01:19:37   to revive her [TS]

01:19:38   it would be a resurrection who are you [TS]

01:19:40   to resurrect another person or whatever [TS]

01:19:43   it is you know very good i just love the [TS]

01:19:46   mic my library was surprisingly for a [TS]

01:19:50   small town library it had the criterion [TS]

01:19:52   edition of kiss me deadly I am notice [TS]

01:19:56   youtube listeners you yes scared to an [TS]

01:20:00   interview at church i love that it just [TS]

01:20:03   uses some of the original art on the [TS]

01:20:04   cover and apparently they promoted it as [TS]

01:20:07   Mickey splains latest h-bomb explanation [TS]

01:20:11   spoiler here's your picture on the front [TS]

01:20:15   oh I finally get that I saw that on the [TS]

01:20:21   poster as I that sets of nice bit of [TS]

01:20:23   hyperbole and then or is no i get it and [TS]
