00:02:37 ◼   ► last policeman on the flight to montreal [TS]

00:02:39 ◼   ► and I immediately bought the other two [TS]

00:02:42 ◼   ► books and I you know by the time i got [TS]

00:02:44 ◼   ► back i think i was in the middle of the [TS]

00:02:45 ◼   ► third book I was just [TS]

00:02:48 ◼   ► and that's actually why i think a great [TS]

00:02:49 ◼   ► endorsement these books are a lot of fun [TS]

00:02:51 ◼   ► to read just be even before we start [TS]

00:02:54 ◼   ► talking about what they are i mean they [TS]

00:02:55 ◼   ► they go fast [TS]

00:02:57 ◼   ► there are a lot of fun and it's been [TS]

00:02:58 ◼   ► awhile since I really ripped through a [TS]

00:03:00 ◼   ► series like I read your last policeman [TS]

00:03:02 ◼   ► they're very gently written there's not [TS]

00:03:03 ◼   ► a lot of extraneous stuff in there and [TS]

00:03:05 ◼   ► that's what I appreciate is that there's [TS]

00:03:07 ◼   ► not a whole lot of time wasting [TS]

00:03:08 ◼   ► so these are you know one of the things [TS]

00:03:11 ◼   ► I really like about the the series is [TS]

00:03:13 ◼   ► that these are did for lack of a better [TS]

00:03:15 ◼   ► word these are detective novels these [TS]

00:03:17 ◼   ► are these are these are these are police [TS]

00:03:19 ◼   ► you know police / detective / crime [TS]

00:03:22 ◼   ► novels with and I remember Scott and [TS]

00:03:24 ◼   ► Lisa both talking about this because you [TS]

00:03:26 ◼   ► guys read it before the rest of us i [TS]

00:03:28 ◼   ► think yeah these are the the spin to the [TS]

00:03:31 ◼   ► to the detective novel but procedural [TS]

00:03:35 ◼   ► crime novel is that the earth has been [TS]

00:03:38 ◼   ► given me an unpleasant diagnosis which [TS]

00:03:41 ◼   ► is that it's going to be hit by an [TS]

00:03:43 ◼   ► asteroid and these aren't spoilers this [TS]

00:03:45 ◼   ► is in the beginning of the first book it [TS]

00:03:47 ◼   ► becomes very clear very rapidly that the [TS]

00:03:50 ◼   ► the planet is going to be probably [TS]

00:03:53 ◼   ► destroyed by an asteroid and the society [TS]

00:03:57 ◼   ► is beginning to break down and amid the [TS]

00:04:00 ◼   ► breakdown of society there's a guy who's [TS]

00:04:03 ◼   ► a policeman and is trying to solve up [TS]

00:04:07 ◼   ► what he believes is a murder even though [TS]

00:04:09 ◼   ► nobody else does so I love that it's the [TS]

00:04:11 ◼   ► you know it's a plot that you've [TS]

00:04:13 ◼   ► probably seen before you know it any e [TS]

00:04:16 ◼   ► voice and style that you've seen before [TS]

00:04:18 ◼   ► and then it's got this bizarre shard of [TS]

00:04:21 ◼   ► a science fictional element that just [TS]

00:04:23 ◼   ► kind of upsets everything so you never [TS]

00:04:25 ◼   ► know quite what's going to happen next [TS]

00:04:26 ◼   ► is just such a great idea for a book on [TS]

00:04:29 ◼   ► top of that detective Henry palace he [TS]

00:04:31 ◼   ► gets promoted right around the time that [TS]

00:04:34 ◼   ► everything goes to pot has jobs are [TS]

00:04:36 ◼   ► available for p.m. we're still around [TS]

00:04:38 ◼   ► yeah and basically just wandered off and [TS]

00:04:40 ◼   ► then go to Florida or New Orleans right [TS]

00:04:42 ◼   ► and you're like well what-whatever wait [TS]

00:04:44 ◼   ► there have been mass suicides evidently [TS]

00:04:46 ◼   ► mom but what I really admire about Henry [TS]

00:04:49 ◼   ► in this book and actually the whole [TS]

00:04:51 ◼   ► series is his dog insistence on honoring [TS]

00:04:54 ◼   ► this internal ideal of civilization [TS]

00:04:57 ◼   ► where he's like if murders happen [TS]

00:04:59 ◼   ► it's my job to solve them because if we [TS]

00:05:00 ◼   ► don't solve crimes water we you know [TS]

00:05:02 ◼   ► what makes us human or non-human and so [TS]

00:05:04 ◼   ► he basically lives out his his life as a [TS]

00:05:07 ◼   ► meditation on what it means to be human [TS]

00:05:08 ◼   ► when you're facing extinction and I [TS]

00:05:11 ◼   ► really like that he never comes out and [TS]

00:05:13 ◼   ► says that explicitly but it's implicit [TS]

00:05:14 ◼   ► and everything he does he's one of my [TS]

00:05:16 ◼   ► favorite fictional characters this year [TS]

00:05:18 ◼   ► I I think it's a really good character I [TS]

00:05:21 ◼   ► i agree with you that the undercurrent [TS]

00:05:23 ◼   ► in this entire series is well there are [TS]

00:05:27 ◼   ► lots of things but one of them is very [TS]

00:05:38 ◼   ► when your civilization gets a terminal [TS]

00:05:43 ◼   ► it's that moment of you know reflection [TS]

00:05:48 ◼   ► of what when you when you get that when [TS]

00:05:50 ◼   ► you get that diagnosis what do you do do [TS]

00:05:52 ◼   ► you say oh it doesn't matter and do [TS]

00:05:55 ◼   ► crazy things or do you say well you know [TS]

00:05:58 ◼   ► i wanna i want to make I want to make [TS]

00:06:00 ◼   ► this matter because there's not a lot of [TS]

00:06:02 ◼   ► time left and what what Henry palace [TS]

00:06:05 ◼   ► does is say it matters to him even if [TS]

00:06:09 ◼   ► and he's not like you should matter to [TS]

00:06:11 ◼   ► you too so much as it's like knowing [TS]

00:06:12 ◼   ► manageme somebody should be doing this [TS]

00:06:14 ◼   ► and that is so the policeman right that [TS]

00:06:17 ◼   ► is such the somebody's gotta stand here [TS]

00:06:19 ◼   ► somebody's gotta gotta stand up for this [TS]

00:06:21 ◼   ► guy who didn't do it or I find the real [TS]

00:06:24 ◼   ► killer or whatever that that a you get [TS]

00:06:25 ◼   ► from a lot of of of police stories and [TS]

00:06:28 ◼   ► detective stories anyway except for him [TS]

00:06:30 ◼   ► he's you know he's also sort of standing [TS]

00:06:32 ◼   ► up for society as a as a concept that [TS]

00:06:35 ◼   ► somebody should still be solving crimes [TS]

00:06:37 ◼   ► even though we're all gonna die in here [TS]

00:06:39 ◼   ► I pull up the passage that hooked beyond [TS]

00:06:41 ◼   ► the first book and this isn't really [TS]

00:06:42 ◼   ► this is again this doesn't spoil the [TS]

00:06:44 ◼   ► plot but this tells you what you're in [TS]

00:06:45 ◼   ► for [TS]

00:06:46 ◼   ► where it starts with a lot of bucket [TS]

00:06:48 ◼   ► list is returned disappointed and a lot [TS]

00:06:50 ◼   ► of newly minted criminal [TS]

00:06:51 ◼   ► goals and wild pleasure seekers have [TS]

00:06:53 ◼   ► found themselves in jail waiting and [TS]

00:06:54 ◼   ► terrified solitude for october so yeah [TS]

00:06:57 ◼   ► there are differences in behavior but [TS]

00:06:58 ◼   ► they're in the margins the main [TS]

00:07:00 ◼   ► difference from a law enforcement [TS]

00:07:00 ◼   ► perspective is more atmospheric hard to [TS]

00:07:03 ◼   ► define i would characterize the mood [TS]

00:07:05 ◼   ► here in town is that of a child who is [TS]

00:07:07 ◼   ► in trouble yet but knows he's going to [TS]

00:07:08 ◼   ► be confused said trembling against the [TS]

00:07:11 ◼   ► knowledge of what comes next and right [TS]

00:07:12 ◼   ► on the edge of violence not angry but [TS]

00:07:14 ◼   ► anxious in a way that could easily [TS]

00:07:15 ◼   ► shaped into anger and it was just this [TS]

00:07:18 ◼   ► beautiful what I really like is how he [TS]

00:07:21 ◼   ► raises and dismisses the whole idea of [TS]

00:07:23 ◼   ► bucket lists and people gone wild in in [TS]

00:07:25 ◼   ► just a few sentences because i remember [TS]

00:07:28 ◼   ► reading the flat the novel that launched [TS]

00:07:30 ◼   ► the flash Ford TV series no mandatory [TS]

00:07:33 ◼   ► right yeah I think yeah and i remember [TS]

00:07:35 ◼   ► reading that and my biggest problem with [TS]

00:07:37 ◼   ► that was there wasn't for me there [TS]

00:07:38 ◼   ► wasn't a lot of convincing world world [TS]

00:07:40 ◼   ► building or even dismissal but what [TS]

00:07:43 ◼   ► about this what about that there's just [TS]

00:07:44 ◼   ► a lot that doesn't get sketched out and [TS]

00:07:46 ◼   ► one of the things winters does [TS]

00:07:47 ◼   ► consistently in this book is almost he [TS]

00:07:50 ◼   ► anticipates almost everyone if and then [TS]

00:07:52 ◼   ► you know tell you yeah well that's how [TS]

00:07:54 ◼   ► it goes down well what about bucket list [TS]

00:07:56 ◼   ► as well [TS]

00:07:56 ◼   ► yeah they're there and it has not gone [TS]

00:07:58 ◼   ► well for them or what about religious [TS]

00:07:59 ◼   ► programs yeah well they've set [TS]

00:08:00 ◼   ► themselves on fire or what about XYZ and [TS]

00:08:03 ◼   ► it's just casually woven into the [TS]

00:08:05 ◼   ► background and and you can see that [TS]

00:08:09 ◼   ► normal life is beginning to fray and it [TS]

00:08:10 ◼   ► adds to the tension in the book too [TS]

00:08:12 ◼   ► because you know everything is beginning [TS]

00:08:14 ◼   ► to develop into entropy that's that's [TS]

00:08:16 ◼   ► the whole sense of the book is is [TS]

00:08:17 ◼   ► everything is going to enter fee and the [TS]

00:08:20 ◼   ► end is disorderly and messy and he ends [TS]

00:08:22 ◼   ► it worse than he started the back and [TS]

00:08:24 ◼   ► then you're like more I want more in [TS]

00:08:26 ◼   ► please [TS]

00:08:26 ◼   ► and-and-and-and the police and and [TS]

00:08:28 ◼   ► people who are committed to finding that [TS]

00:08:30 ◼   ► you know who's responsible for crimes [TS]

00:08:32 ◼   ► these are the people who are standing [TS]

00:08:34 ◼   ► against the entropy but the world is [TS]

00:08:36 ◼   ► spinning out of control in in this in [TS]

00:08:39 ◼   ► this book it hasn't spun yet but you [TS]

00:08:41 ◼   ► know it will [TS]

00:08:42 ◼   ► and in fact this whole crime is him [TS]

00:08:45 ◼   ► investigating a suicide and they're so [TS]

00:08:47 ◼   ► common that everybody just doesn't even [TS]

00:08:49 ◼   ► care and something about the crime makes [TS]

00:08:52 ◼   ► him think I don't think this guy killed [TS]

00:08:54 ◼   ► himself I think this was a murder made [TS]

00:08:56 ◼   ► to look like a suicide and it's such a [TS]

00:08:58 ◼   ► great moment because even his even among [TS]

00:09:01 ◼   ► his colleagues that kind of checked out [TS]

00:09:04 ◼   ► because [TS]

00:09:05 ◼   ► it's just so easy to say well this is a [TS]

00:09:07 ◼   ► suicide and that's and maybe it's [TS]

00:09:10 ◼   ► because he's new but he the you know [TS]

00:09:14 ◼   ► palace cares and wants to investigate it [TS]

00:09:17 ◼   ► and they sort of humor him [TS]

00:09:18 ◼   ► it's really yeah it's a combination of a [TS]

00:09:21 ◼   ► dream you said since he was 12 because [TS]

00:09:22 ◼   ► he mentions that where he's had the same [TS]

00:09:24 ◼   ► dream when he was 12 and get sworn in as [TS]

00:09:26 ◼   ► a detective and it's the culmination of [TS]

00:09:28 ◼   ► his life's work and it gives us like [TS]

00:09:29 ◼   ► meeting right that it's inside feel like [TS]

00:09:32 ◼   ► this is kind of his way of saying this [TS]

00:09:34 ◼   ► is it my life has to mean something [TS]

00:09:35 ◼   ► before it ends when it gets it in just [TS]

00:09:38 ◼   ► under the wire [TS]

00:09:39 ◼   ► ya know jumping off of what Jason was [TS]

00:09:41 ◼   ► saying about the his co-workers i find [TS]

00:09:43 ◼   ► it interesting that you know we're [TS]

00:09:46 ◼   ► talking about all the different levels [TS]

00:09:47 ◼   ► of things that can happen and and I i [TS]

00:09:49 ◼   ► I'd like the fact that he still has co [TS]

00:09:51 ◼   ► workers that are doing things but he has [TS]

00:09:53 ◼   ► a main character really does stand out [TS]

00:09:55 ◼   ► because he is like you said standing up [TS]

00:09:58 ◼   ► for this and his co-workers how kind of [TS]

00:10:00 ◼   ► checked out there's they haven't run [TS]

00:10:02 ◼   ► away they're still there doing it but [TS]

00:10:03 ◼   ► it's kinda like you know when you you [TS]

00:10:05 ◼   ► get the detective the stereotypical [TS]

00:10:07 ◼   ► detective that's been on the force for [TS]

00:10:08 ◼   ► 40 years he's just kind of waiting for [TS]

00:10:10 ◼   ► retirement and still collecting that [TS]

00:10:12 ◼   ► paycheck and worming his chair not [TS]

00:10:14 ◼   ► really trying very hard and there are a [TS]

00:10:16 ◼   ► variety of different ages of the people [TS]

00:10:19 ◼   ► who are still left but you think the [TS]

00:10:21 ◼   ► impression that they're kind of doing [TS]

00:10:22 ◼   ► the same thing they're just sort of like [TS]

00:10:24 ◼   ► they don't really know what else to do [TS]

00:10:25 ◼   ► so they're just going to fill out a [TS]

00:10:26 ◼   ► better time this way but they're not [TS]

00:10:28 ◼   ► going to try to hard because why bother [TS]

00:10:30 ◼   ► when the only things that struck me [TS]

00:10:33 ◼   ► about him is that he reminds me of [TS]

00:10:35 ◼   ► Detective bailiffs at the beginning of [TS]

00:10:37 ◼   ► the series homicide [TS]

00:10:39 ◼   ► you know he's just promoted he's always [TS]

00:10:42 ◼   ► wanted to be a murder police right and [TS]

00:10:45 ◼   ► that's the thinking man's policeman and [TS]

00:10:48 ◼   ► he gets his first case and it up cge [TS]

00:10:50 ◼   ► gets obsessed with it he wants to get it [TS]

00:10:52 ◼   ► right he wants to solve it because it's [TS]

00:10:54 ◼   ► his first case and it was that kind of [TS]

00:10:58 ◼   ► obsession with this is my first thing in [TS]

00:11:01 ◼   ► this thing that I've always wanted to do [TS]

00:11:03 ◼   ► and i need to do it right and i'm not [TS]

00:11:06 ◼   ► going to shortcut I'm not gonna forget [TS]

00:11:09 ◼   ► it I'm not just gonna go home to suicide [TS]

00:11:10 ◼   ► and go on to the next thing and I kind [TS]

00:11:12 ◼   ► of like that stick-to-itiveness like the [TS]

00:11:14 ◼   ► feeling that [TS]

00:11:17 ◼   ► I mean I think we all experience this [TS]

00:11:18 ◼   ► even better i'm extremely unlucky [TS]

00:11:20 ◼   ► personally you get somewhere and [TS]

00:11:23 ◼   ► everybody says well yeah it's ok now but [TS]

00:11:25 ◼   ► boy you should have been here back when [TS]

00:11:27 ◼   ► the salad days right it's always in the [TS]

00:11:29 ◼   ► news and and for Palace this is it's [TS]

00:11:33 ◼   ► just so true he he finally gets this [TS]

00:11:36 ◼   ► thing that he wants when kind of nobody [TS]

00:11:39 ◼   ► wants it and nobody really wants him to [TS]

00:11:40 ◼   ► do it but you know by gum he's gonna do [TS]

00:11:43 ◼   ► it but there's that also that feeling of [TS]

00:11:44 ◼   ► loss not just the loss of of of [TS]

00:11:47 ◼   ► civilization but his loss that this is [TS]

00:11:50 ◼   ► his big dream and now it gets here and [TS]

00:11:51 ◼   ► it's sort of been devalued like like you [TS]

00:11:54 ◼   ► know I just I that really struck me to [TS]

00:11:57 ◼   ► that at the party I'm finally here at [TS]

00:11:58 ◼   ► the party [TS]

00:11:59 ◼   ► just when the party is over the band is [TS]

00:12:01 ◼   ► packing up the Gators of when i finally [TS]

00:12:04 ◼   ► got in [TS]

00:12:04 ◼   ► yes they're gone well i would like to [TS]

00:12:07 ◼   ► also point out Jason before you were [TS]

00:12:11 ◼   ► just describing your your ride and [TS]

00:12:13 ◼   ► reading these books is really fun and [TS]

00:12:14 ◼   ► and i think that we have a very [TS]

00:12:16 ◼   ► different idea of what fun is because [TS]

00:12:19 ◼   ► that isn't I think we've established [TS]

00:12:20 ◼   ► that haven't we relate a little dark [TS]

00:12:23 ◼   ► sometimes that is I mean I like things [TS]

00:12:26 ◼   ► dark but i would not characterize oh my [TS]

00:12:28 ◼   ► feelings about that as a as fun i guess [TS]

00:12:31 ◼   ► um these are for their excellent books I [TS]

00:12:33 ◼   ► wouldn't be here talking about them but [TS]

00:12:35 ◼   ► I I do kind of want to give a warning to [TS]

00:12:37 ◼   ► anybody who has not read these books if [TS]

00:12:38 ◼   ► you if you are the kind of person who [TS]

00:12:41 ◼   ► knows that that this type of [TS]

00:12:43 ◼   ► end-of-the-world stuff might bring you [TS]

00:12:44 ◼   ► down and you are in a fragile state of [TS]

00:12:46 ◼   ► mind i would recommend waiting until [TS]

00:12:49 ◼   ► you're a little bit more solid because I [TS]

00:12:51 ◼   ► agree I'm i was a little iffy just down [TS]

00:12:54 ◼   ► the you know the description of these [TS]

00:12:56 ◼   ► books of as to whether or not i should [TS]

00:12:57 ◼   ► read them in the first place but I was [TS]

00:12:59 ◼   ► like well I'll think about it and then [TS]

00:13:02 ◼   ► actually one of our our kind listeners [TS]

00:13:04 ◼   ► purchased the first book for me off of [TS]

00:13:07 ◼   ► my Amazon wish list so I was like all [TS]

00:13:09 ◼   ► right it's a sign it was meant to be and [TS]

00:13:12 ◼   ► when i read it the first book was so [TS]

00:13:13 ◼   ► good that I immediately purchased the [TS]

00:13:15 ◼   ► second one it was like I don't want two [TS]

00:13:17 ◼   ► and a half three days or something like [TS]

00:13:18 ◼   ► that I zip through them and i'm still [TS]

00:13:21 ◼   ► not sure if that was a good idea or not [TS]

00:13:24 ◼   ► yeah I don't know if it was a chicken in [TS]

00:13:26 ◼   ► the egg thing but i was i was in a [TS]

00:13:28 ◼   ► really bad place as i read these books [TS]

00:13:30 ◼   ► and I can't blame them entirely because [TS]

00:13:32 ◼   ► I might have been anyway but I mean yeah [TS]

00:13:35 ◼   ► things got kinda kinda dicey and ugly [TS]

00:35:17 ◼   ► more suicides that the he just sort of [TS]

00:35:21 ◼   ► didn't want to bog things down with it [TS]

00:35:22 ◼   ► and also that that some of these houses [TS]

00:35:25 ◼   ► and in places that he's passing are that [TS]

00:35:27 ◼   ► many more of them perhaps then he can [TS]

00:35:30 ◼   ► tell from the outside are still [TS]

00:35:31 ◼   ► inhabited and it's just people hunkering [TS]

00:36:32 ◼   ► and picking up the kids and just taking [TS]

00:36:39 ◼   ► the Amish yeah well it's and what I [TS]

00:36:43 ◼   ► really enjoyed was how he said no I've [TS]

00:36:47 ◼   ► a huge plague and that we have to stay [TS]

00:36:49 ◼   ► quarantined because i don't want them to [TS]

00:36:56 ◼   ► burden and a wonderful gift at the same [TS]

00:56:59 ◼   ► and she comes home one day to find a one [TS]

00:57:03 ◼   ► hiding in her closet and blackmails her [TS]
