00:00:00   the incomparable number 225 December [TS]

00:00:11   welcome back everybody to the [TS]

00:00:12   incomparable podcast I'm your host Jason [TS]

00:00:13   still and we're here for [TS]

00:00:15   in addition of our book club i would [TS]

00:00:18   like to first off I recognize that Scott [TS]

00:00:21   melty is not here for the book club [TS]

00:00:23   not because he didn't read the book and [TS]

00:00:24   in fact like the book a lot and [TS]

00:00:25   recommended to many of us but because [TS]

00:00:27   he's a good son and he has to help his [TS]

00:00:30   mom move and he's moving he's like [TS]

00:00:32   moving his mom from one state to another [TS]

00:00:34   or something right now so all good jobs [TS]

00:00:37   god good job we're sorry your not here [TS]

00:00:40   but I have wonderful people here with me [TS]

00:00:42   to talk about this book in absence of [TS]

00:00:45   mr. McNulty Erica and signs out there [TS]

00:00:47   hello i am here indeed you know in nice [TS]

00:00:51   one [TS]

00:00:52   it's almost like your Galaxy Quest hello [TS]

00:00:54   from last week but was it don't remember [TS]

00:00:56   where you want a galaxy quest podcast [TS]

00:01:01   yeah i was just repeat everything the [TS]

00:01:04   computer says that's all you need to do [TS]

00:01:05   yep that you release my sister who is [TS]

00:01:08   also here and his writing this book I [TS]

00:01:10   hope [TS]

00:01:11   hello hi i read the whole trilogy look [TS]

00:01:13   at me to me to carry all right and David [TS]

00:01:17   laura is also out here you've read the [TS]

00:01:18   whole trilogy it's the end of the world [TS]

00:01:20   as we know it end spoiler Warren I feel [TS]

00:01:23   fine [TS]

00:01:24   huh all right we're gonna be doing some [TS]

00:01:26   spoilers horn action here i think i [TS]

00:01:28   think we will since we've all read all [TS]

00:01:30   three books we will do a little bit of [TS]

00:01:32   spoiler warning and as we go so if [TS]

00:01:36   you've only read if you've written in [TS]

00:01:37   the books when you get that first boil [TS]

00:01:39   horn you will want to dive away from [TS]

00:01:41   your comfortable chair and press the [TS]

00:01:43   button marked spoiler horn on your phone [TS]

00:01:46   or podcast have a choice and not listen [TS]

00:01:49   to the rest and then likewise if you [TS]

00:01:50   haven't read the second book will have [TS]

00:01:52   another spoiler warning so now i'm just [TS]

00:01:54   picturing one of those staples [TS]

00:01:55   commercials easy buttons on everybody's [TS]

00:01:57   desk but just his pictures for the horn [TS]

00:02:00   yeah that's right you does dive dive [TS]

00:02:02   over there hit the soft friendly button [TS]

00:02:05   and know that you're not going to be [TS]

00:02:07   spoiled that because you've you've [TS]

00:02:08   called you summoned the spoiler horn to [TS]

00:02:11   your side [TS]

00:02:12   something like that anyway the last [TS]

00:02:15   policeman is what worked what we're [TS]

00:02:16   talking about [TS]

00:02:17   and any last police in series apparently [TS]

00:02:19   by Ben winters the the third book in the [TS]

00:02:23   series came out relative [TS]

00:02:24   recently I read these books in a matter [TS]

00:02:29   of days in fact i believe i was on [TS]

00:02:31   silent i was on a trip to Montreal for [TS]

00:02:34   the singleton conference and I read the [TS]

00:02:37   last policeman on the flight to montreal [TS]

00:02:39   and I immediately bought the other two [TS]

00:02:42   books and I you know by the time i got [TS]

00:02:44   back i think i was in the middle of the [TS]

00:02:45   third book I was just [TS]

00:02:48   and that's actually why i think a great [TS]

00:02:49   endorsement these books are a lot of fun [TS]

00:02:51   to read just be even before we start [TS]

00:02:54   talking about what they are i mean they [TS]

00:02:55   they go fast [TS]

00:02:57   there are a lot of fun and it's been [TS]

00:02:58   awhile since I really ripped through a [TS]

00:03:00   series like I read your last policeman [TS]

00:03:02   they're very gently written there's not [TS]

00:03:03   a lot of extraneous stuff in there and [TS]

00:03:05   that's what I appreciate is that there's [TS]

00:03:07   not a whole lot of time wasting [TS]

00:03:08   so these are you know one of the things [TS]

00:03:11   I really like about the the series is [TS]

00:03:13   that these are did for lack of a better [TS]

00:03:15   word these are detective novels these [TS]

00:03:17   are these are these are these are police [TS]

00:03:19   you know police / detective / crime [TS]

00:03:22   novels with and I remember Scott and [TS]

00:03:24   Lisa both talking about this because you [TS]

00:03:26   guys read it before the rest of us i [TS]

00:03:28   think yeah these are the the spin to the [TS]

00:03:31   to the detective novel but procedural [TS]

00:03:35   crime novel is that the earth has been [TS]

00:03:38   given me an unpleasant diagnosis which [TS]

00:03:41   is that it's going to be hit by an [TS]

00:03:43   asteroid and these aren't spoilers this [TS]

00:03:45   is in the beginning of the first book it [TS]

00:03:47   becomes very clear very rapidly that the [TS]

00:03:50   the planet is going to be probably [TS]

00:03:53   destroyed by an asteroid and the society [TS]

00:03:57   is beginning to break down and amid the [TS]

00:04:00   breakdown of society there's a guy who's [TS]

00:04:03   a policeman and is trying to solve up [TS]

00:04:07   what he believes is a murder even though [TS]

00:04:09   nobody else does so I love that it's the [TS]

00:04:11   you know it's a plot that you've [TS]

00:04:13   probably seen before you know it any e [TS]

00:04:16   voice and style that you've seen before [TS]

00:04:18   and then it's got this bizarre shard of [TS]

00:04:21   a science fictional element that just [TS]

00:04:23   kind of upsets everything so you never [TS]

00:04:25   know quite what's going to happen next [TS]

00:04:26   is just such a great idea for a book on [TS]

00:04:29   top of that detective Henry palace he [TS]

00:04:31   gets promoted right around the time that [TS]

00:04:34   everything goes to pot has jobs are [TS]

00:04:36   available for p.m. we're still around [TS]

00:04:38   yeah and basically just wandered off and [TS]

00:04:40   then go to Florida or New Orleans right [TS]

00:04:42   and you're like well what-whatever wait [TS]

00:04:44   there have been mass suicides evidently [TS]

00:04:46   mom but what I really admire about Henry [TS]

00:04:49   in this book and actually the whole [TS]

00:04:51   series is his dog insistence on honoring [TS]

00:04:54   this internal ideal of civilization [TS]

00:04:57   where he's like if murders happen [TS]

00:04:59   it's my job to solve them because if we [TS]

00:05:00   don't solve crimes water we you know [TS]

00:05:02   what makes us human or non-human and so [TS]

00:05:04   he basically lives out his his life as a [TS]

00:05:07   meditation on what it means to be human [TS]

00:05:08   when you're facing extinction and I [TS]

00:05:11   really like that he never comes out and [TS]

00:05:13   says that explicitly but it's implicit [TS]

00:05:14   and everything he does he's one of my [TS]

00:05:16   favorite fictional characters this year [TS]

00:05:18   I I think it's a really good character I [TS]

00:05:21   i agree with you that the undercurrent [TS]

00:05:23   in this entire series is well there are [TS]

00:05:27   lots of things but one of them is very [TS]

00:05:29   much what are we what are we here for [TS]

00:05:31   what the society mean what is the value [TS]

00:05:35   of having a civilization and when your [TS]

00:05:38   when your civilization gets a terminal [TS]

00:05:41   diagnosis it's really interesting [TS]

00:05:43   it's that moment of you know reflection [TS]

00:05:48   of what when you when you get that when [TS]

00:05:50   you get that diagnosis what do you do do [TS]

00:05:52   you say oh it doesn't matter and do [TS]

00:05:55   crazy things or do you say well you know [TS]

00:05:58   i wanna i want to make I want to make [TS]

00:06:00   this matter because there's not a lot of [TS]

00:06:02   time left and what what Henry palace [TS]

00:06:05   does is say it matters to him even if [TS]

00:06:09   and he's not like you should matter to [TS]

00:06:11   you too so much as it's like knowing [TS]

00:06:12   manageme somebody should be doing this [TS]

00:06:14   and that is so the policeman right that [TS]

00:06:17   is such the somebody's gotta stand here [TS]

00:06:19   somebody's gotta gotta stand up for this [TS]

00:06:21   guy who didn't do it or I find the real [TS]

00:06:24   killer or whatever that that a you get [TS]

00:06:25   from a lot of of of police stories and [TS]

00:06:28   detective stories anyway except for him [TS]

00:06:30   he's you know he's also sort of standing [TS]

00:06:32   up for society as a as a concept that [TS]

00:06:35   somebody should still be solving crimes [TS]

00:06:37   even though we're all gonna die in here [TS]

00:06:39   I pull up the passage that hooked beyond [TS]

00:06:41   the first book and this isn't really [TS]

00:06:42   this is again this doesn't spoil the [TS]

00:06:44   plot but this tells you what you're in [TS]

00:06:45   for [TS]

00:06:46   where it starts with a lot of bucket [TS]

00:06:48   list is returned disappointed and a lot [TS]

00:06:50   of newly minted criminal [TS]

00:06:51   goals and wild pleasure seekers have [TS]

00:06:53   found themselves in jail waiting and [TS]

00:06:54   terrified solitude for october so yeah [TS]

00:06:57   there are differences in behavior but [TS]

00:06:58   they're in the margins the main [TS]

00:07:00   difference from a law enforcement [TS]

00:07:00   perspective is more atmospheric hard to [TS]

00:07:03   define i would characterize the mood [TS]

00:07:05   here in town is that of a child who is [TS]

00:07:07   in trouble yet but knows he's going to [TS]

00:07:08   be confused said trembling against the [TS]

00:07:11   knowledge of what comes next and right [TS]

00:07:12   on the edge of violence not angry but [TS]

00:07:14   anxious in a way that could easily [TS]

00:07:15   shaped into anger and it was just this [TS]

00:07:18   beautiful what I really like is how he [TS]

00:07:21   raises and dismisses the whole idea of [TS]

00:07:23   bucket lists and people gone wild in in [TS]

00:07:25   just a few sentences because i remember [TS]

00:07:28   reading the flat the novel that launched [TS]

00:07:30   the flash Ford TV series no mandatory [TS]

00:07:33   right yeah I think yeah and i remember [TS]

00:07:35   reading that and my biggest problem with [TS]

00:07:37   that was there wasn't for me there [TS]

00:07:38   wasn't a lot of convincing world world [TS]

00:07:40   building or even dismissal but what [TS]

00:07:43   about this what about that there's just [TS]

00:07:44   a lot that doesn't get sketched out and [TS]

00:07:46   one of the things winters does [TS]

00:07:47   consistently in this book is almost he [TS]

00:07:50   anticipates almost everyone if and then [TS]

00:07:52   you know tell you yeah well that's how [TS]

00:07:54   it goes down well what about bucket list [TS]

00:07:56   as well [TS]

00:07:56   yeah they're there and it has not gone [TS]

00:07:58   well for them or what about religious [TS]

00:07:59   programs yeah well they've set [TS]

00:08:00   themselves on fire or what about XYZ and [TS]

00:08:03   it's just casually woven into the [TS]

00:08:05   background and and you can see that [TS]

00:08:09   normal life is beginning to fray and it [TS]

00:08:10   adds to the tension in the book too [TS]

00:08:12   because you know everything is beginning [TS]

00:08:14   to develop into entropy that's that's [TS]

00:08:16   the whole sense of the book is is [TS]

00:08:17   everything is going to enter fee and the [TS]

00:08:20   end is disorderly and messy and he ends [TS]

00:08:22   it worse than he started the back and [TS]

00:08:24   then you're like more I want more in [TS]

00:08:26   please [TS]

00:08:26   and-and-and-and the police and and [TS]

00:08:28   people who are committed to finding that [TS]

00:08:30   you know who's responsible for crimes [TS]

00:08:32   these are the people who are standing [TS]

00:08:34   against the entropy but the world is [TS]

00:08:36   spinning out of control in in this in [TS]

00:08:39   this book it hasn't spun yet but you [TS]

00:08:41   know it will [TS]

00:08:42   and in fact this whole crime is him [TS]

00:08:45   investigating a suicide and they're so [TS]

00:08:47   common that everybody just doesn't even [TS]

00:08:49   care and something about the crime makes [TS]

00:08:52   him think I don't think this guy killed [TS]

00:08:54   himself I think this was a murder made [TS]

00:08:56   to look like a suicide and it's such a [TS]

00:08:58   great moment because even his even among [TS]

00:09:01   his colleagues that kind of checked out [TS]

00:09:04   because [TS]

00:09:05   it's just so easy to say well this is a [TS]

00:09:07   suicide and that's and maybe it's [TS]

00:09:10   because he's new but he the you know [TS]

00:09:14   palace cares and wants to investigate it [TS]

00:09:17   and they sort of humor him [TS]

00:09:18   it's really yeah it's a combination of a [TS]

00:09:21   dream you said since he was 12 because [TS]

00:09:22   he mentions that where he's had the same [TS]

00:09:24   dream when he was 12 and get sworn in as [TS]

00:09:26   a detective and it's the culmination of [TS]

00:09:28   his life's work and it gives us like [TS]

00:09:29   meeting right that it's inside feel like [TS]

00:09:32   this is kind of his way of saying this [TS]

00:09:34   is it my life has to mean something [TS]

00:09:35   before it ends when it gets it in just [TS]

00:09:38   under the wire [TS]

00:09:39   ya know jumping off of what Jason was [TS]

00:09:41   saying about the his co-workers i find [TS]

00:09:43   it interesting that you know we're [TS]

00:09:46   talking about all the different levels [TS]

00:09:47   of things that can happen and and I i [TS]

00:09:49   I'd like the fact that he still has co [TS]

00:09:51   workers that are doing things but he has [TS]

00:09:53   a main character really does stand out [TS]

00:09:55   because he is like you said standing up [TS]

00:09:58   for this and his co-workers how kind of [TS]

00:10:00   checked out there's they haven't run [TS]

00:10:02   away they're still there doing it but [TS]

00:10:03   it's kinda like you know when you you [TS]

00:10:05   get the detective the stereotypical [TS]

00:10:07   detective that's been on the force for [TS]

00:10:08   40 years he's just kind of waiting for [TS]

00:10:10   retirement and still collecting that [TS]

00:10:12   paycheck and worming his chair not [TS]

00:10:14   really trying very hard and there are a [TS]

00:10:16   variety of different ages of the people [TS]

00:10:19   who are still left but you think the [TS]

00:10:21   impression that they're kind of doing [TS]

00:10:22   the same thing they're just sort of like [TS]

00:10:24   they don't really know what else to do [TS]

00:10:25   so they're just going to fill out a [TS]

00:10:26   better time this way but they're not [TS]

00:10:28   going to try to hard because why bother [TS]

00:10:30   when the only things that struck me [TS]

00:10:33   about him is that he reminds me of [TS]

00:10:35   Detective bailiffs at the beginning of [TS]

00:10:37   the series homicide [TS]

00:10:39   you know he's just promoted he's always [TS]

00:10:42   wanted to be a murder police right and [TS]

00:10:45   that's the thinking man's policeman and [TS]

00:10:48   he gets his first case and it up cge [TS]

00:10:50   gets obsessed with it he wants to get it [TS]

00:10:52   right he wants to solve it because it's [TS]

00:10:54   his first case and it was that kind of [TS]

00:10:58   obsession with this is my first thing in [TS]

00:11:01   this thing that I've always wanted to do [TS]

00:11:03   and i need to do it right and i'm not [TS]

00:11:06   going to shortcut I'm not gonna forget [TS]

00:11:09   it I'm not just gonna go home to suicide [TS]

00:11:10   and go on to the next thing and I kind [TS]

00:11:12   of like that stick-to-itiveness like the [TS]

00:11:14   feeling that [TS]

00:11:17   I mean I think we all experience this [TS]

00:11:18   even better i'm extremely unlucky [TS]

00:11:20   personally you get somewhere and [TS]

00:11:23   everybody says well yeah it's ok now but [TS]

00:11:25   boy you should have been here back when [TS]

00:11:27   the salad days right it's always in the [TS]

00:11:29   news and and for Palace this is it's [TS]

00:11:33   just so true he he finally gets this [TS]

00:11:36   thing that he wants when kind of nobody [TS]

00:11:39   wants it and nobody really wants him to [TS]

00:11:40   do it but you know by gum he's gonna do [TS]

00:11:43   it but there's that also that feeling of [TS]

00:11:44   loss not just the loss of of of [TS]

00:11:47   civilization but his loss that this is [TS]

00:11:50   his big dream and now it gets here and [TS]

00:11:51   it's sort of been devalued like like you [TS]

00:11:54   know I just I that really struck me to [TS]

00:11:57   that at the party I'm finally here at [TS]

00:11:58   the party [TS]

00:11:59   just when the party is over the band is [TS]

00:12:01   packing up the Gators of when i finally [TS]

00:12:04   got in [TS]

00:12:04   yes they're gone well i would like to [TS]

00:12:07   also point out Jason before you were [TS]

00:12:11   just describing your your ride and [TS]

00:12:13   reading these books is really fun and [TS]

00:12:14   and i think that we have a very [TS]

00:12:16   different idea of what fun is because [TS]

00:12:19   that isn't I think we've established [TS]

00:12:20   that haven't we relate a little dark [TS]

00:12:23   sometimes that is I mean I like things [TS]

00:12:26   dark but i would not characterize oh my [TS]

00:12:28   feelings about that as a as fun i guess [TS]

00:12:31   um these are for their excellent books I [TS]

00:12:33   wouldn't be here talking about them but [TS]

00:12:35   I I do kind of want to give a warning to [TS]

00:12:37   anybody who has not read these books if [TS]

00:12:38   you if you are the kind of person who [TS]

00:12:41   knows that that this type of [TS]

00:12:43   end-of-the-world stuff might bring you [TS]

00:12:44   down and you are in a fragile state of [TS]

00:12:46   mind i would recommend waiting until [TS]

00:12:49   you're a little bit more solid because I [TS]

00:12:51   agree I'm i was a little iffy just down [TS]

00:12:54   the you know the description of these [TS]

00:12:56   books of as to whether or not i should [TS]

00:12:57   read them in the first place but I was [TS]

00:12:59   like well I'll think about it and then [TS]

00:13:02   actually one of our our kind listeners [TS]

00:13:04   purchased the first book for me off of [TS]

00:13:07   my Amazon wish list so I was like all [TS]

00:13:09   right it's a sign it was meant to be and [TS]

00:13:12   when i read it the first book was so [TS]

00:13:13   good that I immediately purchased the [TS]

00:13:15   second one it was like I don't want two [TS]

00:13:17   and a half three days or something like [TS]

00:13:18   that I zip through them and i'm still [TS]

00:13:21   not sure if that was a good idea or not [TS]

00:13:24   yeah I don't know if it was a chicken in [TS]

00:13:26   the egg thing but i was i was in a [TS]

00:13:28   really bad place as i read these books [TS]

00:13:30   and I can't blame them entirely because [TS]

00:13:32   I might have been anyway but I mean yeah [TS]

00:13:35   things got kinda kinda dicey and ugly [TS]

00:13:37   they're so watch yourself if you're not [TS]

00:13:39   sure I agree i definitely felt that too [TS]

00:13:42   when I finished I did not come out of [TS]

00:13:46   finishing the third book like you know [TS]

00:13:49   fresh and we're and refreshed and ready [TS]

00:13:52   to seize the day I was like I who like [TS]

00:13:56   that wasn't wow I I'm gonna have to [TS]

00:13:59   reveal myself as a soulless monster then [TS]

00:14:02   i'm using are you going [TS]

00:14:05   I read them as they came out so I had a [TS]

00:14:06   year pause in between each one which [TS]

00:14:09   which helps members i can see i I don't [TS]

00:14:13   I don't usually get that empathetic with [TS]

00:14:15   a book but there are occasionally like [TS]

00:14:18   graham greene's the power and the glory [TS]

00:14:19   I've never finished it because it heat [TS]

00:14:22   poor trees depression and desolations so [TS]

00:14:26   well just like no no I can't finish this [TS]

00:14:29   book and then there's a little bit of [TS]

00:14:32   that in this but it's it's also a [TS]

00:14:34   detective story which is cool so I [TS]

00:14:37   enjoyed it i wanted to make sure he was [TS]

00:14:40   gonna be okay with in a very limited [TS]

00:14:42   subset of what [TS]

00:14:43   ok could possibly be but um they that [TS]

00:14:47   that one of the things i want to address [TS]

00:14:49   those if you do read the trilogy rest [TS]

00:14:50   assured that it is really well read and [TS]

00:14:54   really well-thought-out and the ending [TS]

00:14:55   is immensely gratifying and it's a it's [TS]

00:14:58   and it makes sense it's not always that [TS]

00:15:00   was my big know because i had read the [TS]

00:15:01   first one like the bean seeds like [TS]

00:15:04   literally two weeks before the second [TS]

00:15:05   one came out and immediately bought that [TS]

00:15:07   one and ripped through it and then I [TS]

00:15:08   preap and then i pre-ordered the third [TS]

00:15:10   one and i almost never do that because I [TS]

00:15:12   prefer to buy my books used and but I [TS]

00:15:15   immediately bought it new for kindle and [TS]

00:15:17   when it came out the day it came out I [TS]

00:15:18   blocked out sometime and read it and [TS]

00:15:21   when I was done I was like huh [TS]

00:15:23   I've no I was relieved because it clear [TS]

00:15:26   on so it could have gone so bad and he [TS]

00:15:28   could have broken faith with the reader [TS]

00:15:29   and instead he writes a book that is so [TS]

00:15:33   consistent to Henry is and so consistent [TS]

00:15:36   with the story he began telling in the [TS]

00:15:38   first book that this trilogy really [TS]

00:15:39   hangs together as a perfect three piece [TS]

00:15:42   of that makes sense [TS]

00:15:43   and oh yeah it's like Diane lot yeah [TS]

00:15:46   it's six months ago by putting sticks [TS]

00:15:47   the landing so I really i was relieved [TS]

00:15:50   because I would've been angry if they [TS]

00:15:51   hadn't done that it doesn't certainly [TS]

00:15:52   mean it's a feel-good I mean this whole [TS]

00:15:54   the whole series it is consistent and I [TS]

00:15:56   think that's what you're saying is a i [TS]

00:15:58   agree i think the ending is consistent [TS]

00:16:00   and not a ripoff and all those things [TS]

00:16:02   the fact is this is ultimately about the [TS]

00:16:04   sort of the world destruction of light [TS]

00:16:07   in fact you could say it's weird because [TS]

00:16:08   we all talked about the stand a little [TS]

00:16:10   while ago [TS]

00:16:10   it is a few chapters of the stand right [TS]

00:16:13   is it is how society unravels and how [TS]

00:16:16   people face and react to death and [TS]

00:16:19   that's what it's about [TS]

00:16:21   there's a why a series called this world [TS]

00:16:23   we live in I'm turning on googling [TS]

00:16:25   whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo does it now but the [TS]

00:16:29   premise is that a rogue it's always a [TS]

00:16:31   row gasps oh yeah is that the one where [TS]

00:16:33   the moon blows up yeah its okay its or [TS]

00:16:35   getting hit by an asteroid yes it's [TS]

00:16:37   Susan beth pfeffer and gather the moon [TS]

00:16:40   gets hit by an asteroid knocks it out of [TS]

00:16:42   orbit and enriched and in turn what that [TS]

00:16:44   does is that screws with the oceans that [TS]

00:16:47   screws with the oceans tides and then [TS]

00:16:49   the caldera under Yellowstone explodes [TS]

00:16:51   yeah so so the earth effectively goes [TS]

00:16:55   into it what what is all people called [TS]

00:16:58   nuclear winter state like there's no [TS]

00:16:59   more Sun and the climate change is [TS]

00:17:02   radical and and very sudden and society [TS]

00:17:05   breaks down and so I had read the first [TS]

00:17:08   three books in that series when they [TS]

00:17:09   came out [TS]

00:17:10   oh yeah like I rather like 2011 which [TS]

00:17:12   was not the best time to read that but [TS]

00:17:14   we done [TS]

00:17:16   yeah well I was postpartum at the time [TS]

00:17:17   too so totally not helping [TS]

00:17:19   uh-huh so I had already gone through and [TS]

00:17:23   read a trilogy about this is what [TS]

00:17:24   happens when massive catastrophe hits [TS]

00:17:27   and this is what happens to people who [TS]

00:17:28   are left standing and so in the back of [TS]

00:17:30   my mind the whole time mastering the [TS]

00:17:31   last policeman and I admit that [TS]

00:17:33   subsequent two books i was impressed [TS]

00:17:37   with how he mainly he treated the idea [TS]

00:17:39   of suicide because well it's true he [TS]

00:17:41   does he does investigate murders he does [TS]

00:17:44   also raised a lot of very good points [TS]

00:17:47   about whether when it makes sense to [TS]

00:17:49   have a survival instinct that kicks in [TS]

00:17:50   versus what makes sense to throw in the [TS]

00:17:52   towel and then he starts talking about [TS]

00:17:53   the scams that people have started [TS]

00:17:54   pulling on each other or the death [TS]

00:17:56   it measures are taking and and i found [TS]

00:17:58   that actually a lot more upsetting than [TS]

00:18:00   the notion that a comet would hit the [TS]

00:18:02   planet it was the idea of not knowing [TS]

00:18:03   whether you wanted to live or die that [TS]

00:18:05   that I have the most trouble with these [TS]

00:18:06   books should we fire off the spoiler [TS]

00:18:09   Horner is there more we should do on [TS]

00:18:10   this side of it i think i gave my [TS]

00:18:12   warning so I'm going ok I think I think [TS]

00:18:15   that's I think that's right this [TS]

00:18:16   definitely can leave you I definitely [TS]

00:18:18   felt like i was i was picked up by these [TS]

00:18:21   books and then when I was left off [TS]

00:18:22   although i really enjoyed the reading [TS]

00:18:24   experience i was left in a different [TS]

00:18:26   emotional place then when they picked me [TS]

00:18:29   up there is no doubt about it [TS]

00:18:30   oh yeah now i have i seen questions [TS]

00:18:32   linger in the back of my head of the [TS]

00:18:34   post-apocalyptic variety time for me to [TS]

00:18:36   tell you about one of our sponsors it's [TS]

00:18:38   smile software makers of text expander [TS]

00:18:40   touch three and many other excellent [TS]

00:18:42   utilities for the mac and for iOS [TS]

00:18:43   TextExpander touch 3 is an app that has [TS]

00:18:46   a custom keyboard now you may know [TS]

00:18:49   TextExpander on the mac and iOS is some [TS]

00:18:51   great software that lets you type things [TS]

00:18:54   just a few letters and then BOOM [TS]

00:18:56   expand out into pretty much anything you [TS]

00:19:15   individual apps could support the text [TS]

00:19:17   expander shortcut format and that was [TS]

00:19:19   great but in lots of apps including all [TS]

00:19:22   the stock apple apps there was no [TS]

00:19:23   support you couldn't get to your text [TS]

00:19:25   expander shortcuts you can with this [TS]

00:19:28   custom keyboard you flip over the text [TS]

00:19:29   expander coaching custom keyboard or you [TS]

00:19:31   keep it open and you have access to all [TS]

00:19:33   of those texts but you type a couple of [TS]

00:19:35   things boom huge strings of text just [TS]

00:19:38   pop out and all you do is tap a couple [TS]

00:19:40   of things with your thumbs that is [TS]

00:19:42   really great you can type much more with [TS]

00:19:44   a lot less effort and it will grab your [TS]

00:19:47   favorite snippets from your mac and make [TS]

00:19:49   them available to use on your iOS device [TS]

00:19:51   and another important point TextExpander [TS]

00:20:02   their privacy policy and how smile [TS]

00:20:04   software is not going to read what you [TS]

00:20:07   type which is very cool they're nice [TS]

00:20:09   people and their [TS]

00:20:09   not going to do that text expander touch [TS]

00:20:53   the end of the world if you don't wanna [TS]

00:20:54   listen spoilers jump to 55 minutes for [TS]

00:20:57   what are you reading [TS]

00:20:58   [Music] [TS]

00:21:02   I'm going to be very careful as we talk [TS]

00:21:04   about this here because i read them all [TS]

00:21:07   in such close succession and and because [TS]

00:21:10   i read them on a kindle I've discovered [TS]

00:21:12   that now that I'm now that I'm reading [TS]

00:21:13   an e-reader I don't make the delineation [TS]

00:21:16   between different books as much because [TS]

00:21:18   i'm not seeing the covers and I tend to [TS]

00:21:20   forget the titles of books if I wasn't [TS]

00:21:22   looking at the wikipedia page for the [TS]

00:21:24   first one right now I could not tell you [TS]

00:21:26   the title who support the second and [TS]

00:21:27   third books and i don't know that i [TS]

00:21:29   remember super well exactly where the [TS]

00:21:31   line is between each one of them simply [TS]

00:21:34   because it is such a consistent story [TS]

00:21:36   and it really does flow each one has its [TS]

00:21:38   own beginning middle and end date for [TS]

00:21:40   miss Gloria solved because that [TS]

00:21:42   beautiful art my god I'm just I the the [TS]

00:21:46   pacing the way he links all three of [TS]

00:21:49   them together each book has its distinct [TS]

00:21:53   are due its distinct narrative arc with [TS]

00:21:54   the whole series just does a beautiful [TS]

00:21:57   job from beginning to end too and i'm [TS]

00:21:59   with you Erykah it's it's I have to stop [TS]

00:22:01   remind myself that oh yeah book two ends [TS]

00:22:03   with insert event here in them and and [TS]

00:22:07   then booked three starts with but this [TS]

00:22:08   last police been uh we you know we [TS]

00:22:11   talked about the themes a little bit one [TS]

00:22:12   of the things that i like it so it's a [TS]

00:22:14   suicide that he thinks is a murder [TS]

00:22:15   there is of course a I mean let's see [TS]

00:22:20   there's there's the subplot with his [TS]

00:22:21   sister and their em and there's like the [TS]

00:22:25   military base and all these things that [TS]

00:22:26   are happening and then there's the [TS]

00:22:28   there's the trying to figure out the the [TS]

00:22:32   story of the guy and the guy was hanging [TS]

00:22:33   out with that with that with another guy [TS]

00:22:35   and then there's a well woman who's [TS]

00:22:37   involved because it's a detective story [TS]

00:22:39   of course he's going to unravel their [TS]

00:22:42   lives and get in get involved with the [TS]

00:22:46   woman who's involved in the mystery as [TS]

00:22:49   you do as happens so often no detectives [TS]

00:22:53   mostly Democrats the books about the [TS]

00:22:56   detectives who just do their job and [TS]

00:22:58   it's all morning they just take care of [TS]

00:23:00   it and always a femme fatale [TS]

00:23:02   in this case it's kind of literal yeah I [TS]

00:23:05   like I enjoyed the mystery i enjoyed him [TS]

00:23:07   unraveling I like the fact that even in [TS]

00:23:10   a standard mystery when a guy thinks [TS]

00:23:12   it's a murder but everybody else thinks [TS]

00:23:14   it's suicide you're like come on it [TS]

00:23:15   the book he's going to be right but in [TS]

00:23:17   this I felt like he might be wrong [TS]

00:23:20   i mean i-i don't know that the the [TS]

00:23:21   existence of that asteroid makes [TS]

00:23:23   everything kind of it throws everything [TS]

00:23:25   out of sync and I start to think maybe [TS]

00:23:27   this is not going to be that story it's [TS]

00:23:29   gonna be some weird thing involving the [TS]

00:23:31   end of the world and and you know it [TS]

00:23:33   turns out not to be it turns out that [TS]

00:23:34   that there is indeed a a mystery to be [TS]

00:23:39   solved involving a conspiracy to kill [TS]

00:23:42   this guy and make it look like a suicide [TS]

00:23:44   and it's nice because you know by sort [TS]

00:23:48   of starting in media res you know here [TS]

00:23:52   you don't necessarily know except unless [TS]

00:23:54   you've read the back of the book [TS]

00:23:56   no it's it's about the end of the world [TS]

00:23:58   so you know if you're trying to pick up [TS]

00:24:00   details about what's going on in this [TS]

00:24:01   world it's all oblique it's not you know [TS]

00:24:03   well to mcdonalds well it's not really a [TS]

00:24:05   mcdonalds right you know how I love that [TS]

00:24:07   when he explains which change of clothes [TS]

00:24:09   which was not in just these little [TS]

00:24:11   details that you pick up so again [TS]

00:24:14   there's there's just enough doubt as to [TS]

00:24:17   whether you know maybe it really is a [TS]

00:24:19   suicide [TS]

00:24:19   I don't know right and but but yeah I [TS]

00:24:23   love that there's no like big things [TS]

00:24:25   saying here is the situation now right [TS]

00:24:28   it gives you everything you need to know [TS]

00:24:29   it's just all these details that sort of [TS]

00:24:31   filter through the whole thing and you [TS]

00:24:35   you learn stuff as you need to know it [TS]

00:24:37   as it makes the plot make more sense [TS]

00:24:39   which is against just beautiful [TS]

00:24:41   yeah in the so in the end you know [TS]

00:24:44   there's I mean we can we can recap the [TS]

00:24:47   plot but basically he follows leads that [TS]

00:24:50   leads that that uh make you think [TS]

00:24:53   there's a very nice red herring where [TS]

00:24:54   you think that this is going to be about [TS]

00:24:55   this guy who's doing insurance fraud [TS]

00:24:58   whose because the insurance companies [TS]

00:25:00   again are in a problematic place because [TS]

00:25:03   the world is coming to an end and lots [TS]

00:25:05   of crazy things are happening whether [TS]

00:25:07   they're disputing a lot of payouts to [TS]

00:25:08   because they're now what you gonna do [TS]

00:25:13   uh you know we'll take it to court next [TS]

00:25:16   year haha and but in the end it turns [TS]

00:25:19   out that there's a there's a guy who's [TS]

00:25:21   what distributing drugs out of the [TS]

00:25:23   basement of the police station is that [TS]

00:25:25   right [TS]

00:25:27   hospitals are the hospital right [TS]

00:25:29   hospital [TS]

00:25:30   that's right and I but along the way we [TS]

00:25:35   have the Fatah land and a scene that [TS]

00:25:37   could very easily have been in other [TS]

00:25:39   circumstances not as meaningful but what [TS]

00:25:44   is interesting about this series is this [TS]

00:25:46   this seen this this one evening the date [TS]

00:25:49   that that the main character goes on [TS]

00:25:52   haunts him for the rest of the books [TS]

00:25:55   which I actually think it's kind of [TS]

00:25:57   great dance that it's so meaningful to [TS]

00:25:59   him and we're thinking about this woman [TS]

00:26:02   that he spent you know was actually one [TS]

00:26:04   night with an A and the it had that [TS]

00:26:07   hangs over the other two books it's [TS]

00:26:09   actually really kind of great that's the [TS]

00:26:11   case haunted by women [TS]

00:26:12   I suppose so his sister here and sister [TS]

00:26:16   is that this is his sister is the [TS]

00:26:17   biggest ghost in his life and she's [TS]

00:26:19   right there half the time but palace [TS]

00:26:20   will you ever learn [TS]

00:26:23   probably a dozen now it's gonna hit that [TS]

00:26:26   he's just about to learn in yeah the and [TS]

00:26:32   yeah we should we should we talk about [TS]

00:26:34   the other books [TS]

00:26:35   why not why not that's all right isn't [TS]

00:26:38   this your second spoiler Hearn [TS]

00:26:40   [Music] [TS]

00:26:43   it's alright form below [TS]

00:26:47   well done Lisa push the button on the [TS]

00:26:49   spoiler in there good job i guess i [TS]

00:26:50   could count on fiat so countdown city is [TS]

00:26:55   the one that I um I think I feel like in [TS]

00:27:00   some ways I I I remember the most [TS]

00:27:02   because this this to me [TS]

00:27:04   so at the end they basically shut down [TS]

00:27:06   parts of the police force and palaces [TS]

00:27:09   out of a job [TS]

00:27:10   so now he's kind of like a detective [TS]

00:27:11   with you know like a private detective [TS]

00:27:14   sort of except not what sort of man and [TS]

00:27:17   this and and i love the structure of [TS]

00:27:18   this one because this one is very much [TS]

00:27:20   like it's like his his old nanny but [TS]

00:27:22   it's very much like her husband has [TS]

00:27:24   disappeared [TS]

00:27:25   you gotta find him and it all kind of [TS]

00:27:27   unravels when he starts to check out his [TS]

00:27:29   story there's like the bowling alley [TS]

00:27:32   where they serve food that is where he [TS]

00:27:34   worked and then he he has to figure out [TS]

00:27:37   that they have a truck that they use to [TS]

00:27:39   get supplies and he ends up in this one [TS]

00:27:43   he ends up he ends up at the what the [TS]

00:27:46   University of New Hampshire is that [TS]

00:27:48   right yeah it'sit's you an agent with [TS]

00:27:51   become a hippie commune basically his [TS]

00:27:54   sister he ends up there with his sister [TS]

00:27:56   and they're trying to find out the [TS]

00:27:57   location of this guy who is the husband [TS]

00:28:01   of the nanny and wondering what he's up [TS]

00:28:03   to and what he's doing and and and and [TS]

00:28:06   traces that story through and eventually [TS]

00:28:09   comes to a like a Coast Guard is a [TS]

00:28:13   schematic yes it's there's there's a [TS]

00:28:16   coastguard operation they interrupt [TS]

00:28:18   yeah yeah where he's where it turns out [TS]

00:28:21   that this guy is trying to prove to what [TS]

00:28:25   saved the people who are off who have [TS]

00:28:28   fled other places and are trying to come [TS]

00:28:30   to the u.s. on the off-chance that since [TS]

00:28:33   the asteroid is hitting an end indonesia [TS]

00:28:35   us may be safer place to be and these [TS]

00:28:38   people are being like gunned down before [TS]

00:28:41   they stand and thinking the ship's yeah [TS]

00:28:44   person so you know that it's really dark [TS]

00:28:46   but that I mean this has really division [TS]

00:28:49   the visuals of this have stuck with me [TS]

00:28:51   that the the walls of the of the [TS]

00:28:53   university they with the defenses and [TS]

00:28:56   and being allowed [TS]

00:28:57   and I was like high security perimeter [TS]

00:29:00   and the bowling alley where there's the [TS]

00:29:02   guy who's like it's like the mob bowling [TS]

00:29:05   alley [TS]

00:29:05   except they just you know it's the there [TS]

00:29:07   they're mobbed up because it's the end [TS]

00:29:09   of the world and they have food there [TS]

00:29:10   and then that last confrontation where [TS]

00:29:13   he's coming he meets the finally meets [TS]

00:29:16   the husband and he's climbed up the side [TS]

00:29:18   of that that building and it's just it's [TS]

00:29:21   just yeah what a crazy it better [TS]

00:29:24   you know I I liked it better than the [TS]

00:29:26   first one because i thought it was like [TS]

00:29:27   even more memorable as things are [TS]

00:29:29   spinning out of control and and it [TS]

00:29:31   really i'll i really enjoyed the thread [TS]

00:29:33   that he keeps following because it's dog [TS]

00:29:35   it right he's just like you kind of like [TS]

00:29:37   to start but then in true detective [TS]

00:29:39   story fashion once he gets that thread [TS]

00:29:41   he just keeps pulling it he can't help [TS]

00:29:43   but keep pulling it no matter what the [TS]

00:29:45   cost is the second book i thought was [TS]

00:29:47   actually the most disturbing of them all [TS]

00:29:48   to be honest with you because that's [TS]

00:29:51   also when you discovered the parents [TS]

00:29:52   have been abandoned their children [TS]

00:29:54   oh yeah oh that's right yeah there's [TS]

00:29:56   like the it's like merchants from a [TS]

00:29:58   musical except terrible it's awful yeah [TS]

00:30:01   you know so you discovered that's been [TS]

00:30:03   going on the medical care has begun to [TS]

00:30:06   deteriorate there's that weird vigil [TS]

00:30:08   they have in Massachusetts where people [TS]

00:30:10   just start standing up and reciting all [TS]

00:30:11   things are going to miss the end of the [TS]

00:30:13   world you know there's that there's that [TS]

00:30:17   data model there's the hucksters who [TS]

00:30:19   took all those people for all their life [TS]

00:30:21   savings for this this this rescue [TS]

00:30:23   oh yeah program that will never ever [TS]

00:30:25   come to fruition and yeah that one just [TS]

00:30:29   a kind of made me go like yeah I mean I [TS]

00:30:32   guess you got some money but really like [TS]

00:30:35   you you have three weeks to spend it on [TS]

00:30:37   whatever I just yeah like a lot of work [TS]

00:30:40   to go through to scam people like that's [TS]

00:30:42   just that you're really a terrible [TS]

00:30:44   person if you're doing that because [TS]

00:30:46   you're not going to get much out of it [TS]

00:30:48   yeah it's just awful uh-huh so it's just [TS]

00:30:51   it's just the second one is because the [TS]

00:30:54   third book I think they're the thing I [TS]

00:30:55   really like about the third book is it's [TS]

00:30:57   just this this very it's just the final [TS]

00:31:01   unraveling where where he only has two [TS]

00:31:03   big mysteries left to solve one of them [TS]

00:31:04   is what the hell happened to a sister [TS]

00:31:05   right and the answer is not a surprise [TS]

00:31:09   this one reminded me [TS]

00:31:10   of a book that i really i read in high [TS]

00:31:12   school that I really liked that was one [TS]

00:31:14   of my favorite detective books called [TS]

00:31:17   well in the same way that it that [TS]

00:31:19   there's this kind of you know i love [TS]

00:31:22   that dread of I'm gonna follow this case [TS]

00:31:25   and it's going to go somewhere badly you [TS]

00:31:27   know bad and it's gonna be bad for me [TS]

00:31:28   and it's going badly for everybody [TS]

00:31:30   involved and yet i'm going to do it [TS]

00:31:32   because that's just what's gonna happen [TS]

00:31:33   now it's that dot that darkness and in [TS]

00:31:36   that book is I think he may be out of [TS]

00:31:38   print it might be back in print now [TS]

00:31:40   called strike three you're dead which is [TS]

00:31:42   actually about a baseball player [TS]

00:31:43   investigating the murder of one of his [TS]

00:31:45   teammates and for a book that is kind of [TS]

00:31:48   quirky and strange and sounds like it [TS]

00:31:50   might be wacky it's actually really dark [TS]

00:31:52   and then that the first book in a series [TS]

00:31:53   of of mysteries being solved by this [TS]

00:31:56   former baseball player and it's the same [TS]

00:31:58   thing which is personal life you know [TS]

00:32:01   spending apart have to follow the case [TS]

00:32:03   leads to unpleasant locations and and I [TS]

00:32:06   I just the result of that book is i love [TS]

00:32:09   the tone i like i love that the main [TS]

00:32:11   character is reluctant and yet can't [TS]

00:32:13   just can't help it has to follow the [TS]

00:32:15   path and that's I got that exact same [TS]

00:32:17   tone and feeling and style from from all [TS]

00:32:21   these books but especially countdown [TS]

00:32:22   city [TS]

00:32:23   yeah oh and the diner the diner that [TS]

00:32:26   serves almost nothing where he and his [TS]

00:32:27   two former police colleagues go like [TS]

00:32:31   have nowhere else to be amazing [TS]

00:32:35   no the am I mean is I you sort of going [TS]

00:32:38   into book number three world of trouble [TS]

00:32:39   that that really oh this this isn't [TS]

00:32:41   gonna end well see also common yeah but [TS]

00:32:44   you know I think for me that the thing [TS]

00:32:45   that broke my heart a little bit is how [TS]

00:32:47   he leaves police house and strikes out [TS]

00:32:49   on his own and it's just like the worst [TS]

00:32:51   possible decision you can make but like [TS]

00:32:53   jason said he's got that thing in his [TS]

00:32:55   nature that pushes him to keep going [TS]

00:32:56   alright we're going to just blow the [TS]

00:32:57   blow the whole whole whore now [TS]

00:33:00   [Music] [TS]

00:33:04   there goes yeah and you know his [TS]

00:33:06   sister's the biggest mystery in his life [TS]

00:33:08   and he's just compelled to try to solve [TS]

00:33:10   whatever it is that he goes on about and [TS]

00:33:14   you know it's not gonna end well like [TS]

00:33:16   you know from the minute you open the [TS]

00:33:17   book she hasn't she hasn't she's always [TS]

00:33:19   a sign of something bad in every single [TS]

00:33:20   book the minute he gets entangled mr. [TS]

00:33:23   things get complicated in weird and [TS]

00:33:24   murdery Erica you know you mentioned the [TS]

00:33:27   the the the the dark the darkness and [TS]

00:33:31   that it ends up in a problematic place I [TS]

00:33:36   i will reinforce that by saying that the [TS]

00:33:38   world of trouble reminds me a lot of the [TS]

00:33:40   road yeah uh yeah yeah yeah you know [TS]

00:33:44   because he is he's traveling through and [TS]

00:33:46   i think it's interesting i can't wait to [TS]

00:33:47   get your reaction to station 11 cuz well [TS]

00:33:49   we're gonna do that we're going to do [TS]

00:33:50   that for the football club so everybody [TS]

00:33:53   seek some therapy before they're more [TS]

00:33:56   and more population tellin ya you know [TS]

00:33:59   it's not i can't stop thinking about the [TS]

00:34:01   book it's delightful [TS]

00:34:02   it's it's an amazing book will get there [TS]

00:34:04   um I but it's delightful i mentioned i [TS]

00:34:07   mentioned the road but it is like that [TS]

00:34:10   in a sense and this is actually [TS]

00:34:11   something I thought was weird in these [TS]

00:34:13   books is I don't get a sense by the time [TS]

00:34:16   the third book happens that this is not [TS]

00:34:18   the stand right people aren't dying in [TS]

00:34:21   mass die-offs because of something [TS]

00:34:23   that's happening the thing is gonna [TS]

00:34:25   happen and it's going to be the end of [TS]

00:34:26   the world and yet in world of trouble as [TS]

00:34:29   he is riding his bicycle from Vermont to [TS]

00:34:33   ohio I the world seems pretty [TS]

00:34:36   unpopulated and I I thought that was [TS]

00:34:39   really nice [TS]

00:34:42   in terms of telling a story about the [TS]

00:34:44   end of the world that have it be like we [TS]

00:34:45   this is the world we are leaving behind [TS]

00:34:47   that we've already abandoned it and yet [TS]

00:34:50   you know the people aren't really going [TS]

00:34:52   anywhere and so on that level it didn't [TS]

00:34:55   really make a lot of sense to me that it [TS]

00:34:57   seemed as empty as it did he runs into [TS]

00:34:58   people here and there but it it just [TS]

00:35:01   seemed like you know this kind of a this [TS]

00:35:03   kind of apocalypse where I know it felt [TS]

00:35:06   like he was cheating and he was telling [TS]

00:35:07   us a setting of a different kind of [TS]

00:35:10   apocalypse and the one where [TS]

00:35:11   actually watching I felt like this would [TS]

00:35:12   be more people around and I was figure [TS]

00:35:14   the mass suicides [TS]

00:35:15   yeah I got the feeling that there are [TS]

00:35:17   more suicides that the he just sort of [TS]

00:35:18   described some of the suicides and [TS]

00:35:21   didn't want to bog things down with it [TS]

00:35:22   and also that that some of these houses [TS]

00:35:25   and in places that he's passing are that [TS]

00:35:27   many more of them perhaps then he can [TS]

00:35:30   tell from the outside are still [TS]

00:35:31   inhabited and it's just people hunkering [TS]

00:35:33   down because they don't want to run into [TS]

00:35:35   run into anybody you don't have the code [TS]

00:35:38   right of like what the different kinds [TS]

00:35:40   of houses are abandoned and therefore to [TS]

00:35:42   find friends yeah the red towns versus [TS]

00:35:45   the blue toes and then when you get the [TS]

00:35:47   red ones just chillin an awful but i [TS]

00:35:51   think it i liked the the bits and pieces [TS]

00:35:55   of the the folks that he found who were [TS]

00:35:57   still you could retain their humanity to [TS]

00:36:00   a certain extent I think that it didn't [TS]

00:36:03   completely balanced out all of the the [TS]

00:36:05   awfulness as far as you know making me [TS]

00:36:07   feel good but it was nice to see that [TS]

00:36:10   that wasn't left aside that this wasn't [TS]

00:36:12   you know we were completely dragged down [TS]

00:36:14   by it some people still have not only [TS]

00:36:16   are some people still trying to keep [TS]

00:36:21   their their old job the way that he has [TS]

00:36:23   been but there are also people who have [TS]

00:36:25   become even more selfless and there are [TS]

00:36:29   actually just trying to help out you [TS]

00:36:30   know you be the people traveling around [TS]

00:36:32   and picking up the kids and just taking [TS]

00:36:34   care of them and yes lets you know not a [TS]

00:36:36   bad thing I i really like the twist with [TS]

00:36:39   the Amish yeah well it's and what I [TS]

00:36:43   really enjoyed was how he said no I've [TS]

00:36:45   lied to everybody and said that there's [TS]

00:36:47   a huge plague and that we have to stay [TS]

00:36:49   quarantined because i don't want them to [TS]

00:36:51   know what's happening and I thought to [TS]

00:36:53   myself you know wow that's a terrible [TS]

00:36:56   burden and a wonderful gift at the same [TS]

00:36:57   time and how must it feel to have to try [TS]

00:37:00   to keep up that lie every day out of [TS]

00:37:02   love you know and it would work that is [TS]

00:37:04   completely one hundred percent plausible [TS]

00:37:06   thing and it makes the ending just [TS]

00:37:08   beautiful [TS]

00:37:09   you know I guess I when I read the last [TS]

00:37:11   chapter and I'm holding my I was holding [TS]

00:37:13   my breath through all of it through the [TS]

00:37:14   epilogue and I I literally was holding [TS]

00:37:18   my breath through it and then you know [TS]

00:37:21   we get to the weather having lunch [TS]

00:37:23   together [TS]

00:37:23   uh-huh and you know you get to the last [TS]

00:37:25   page and your and then I was home it was [TS]

00:37:30   that mean that last paragraph was just [TS]

00:37:32   burned into my mind is just like that if [TS]

00:37:34   of any book I think that I've ever read [TS]

00:37:37   that ending is is going to stick with me [TS]

00:37:40   and has changed me more as a person into [TS]

00:37:42   anything else I can think of [TS]

00:37:44   oh god yeah but the thing that I liked [TS]

00:37:46   about that ending so much was how after [TS]

00:37:50   spending basically a book and a half [TS]

00:37:51   documenting the downward slide of [TS]

00:37:53   humanity both as a conceit no actually [TS]

00:37:56   as a conceit as a species and as a [TS]

00:37:59   condition you know where basically [TS]

00:38:01   dissolving into selfish shapes and [TS]

00:38:02   people are killing each other for dumb [TS]

00:38:03   reasons and and all that like he chooses [TS]

00:38:06   to end on this this note of deliberate [TS]

00:38:08   community and deliberate com deliberate [TS]

00:38:11   support and complicity where he agrees [TS]

00:38:13   to be complicit in the lie and Ally [TS]

00:38:15   agrees because he's like no one should [TS]

00:38:17   have to be alone today and I just I was [TS]

00:38:20   like wow that's that's that's a [TS]

00:38:21   remarkably up the end it you know where [TS]

00:38:25   he's basically a form in that young [TS]

00:38:26   people can cheat people can choose to be [TS]

00:38:28   good under awful circumstances over and [TS]

00:38:30   over again they can choose to be good [TS]

00:38:31   and and I thought that was just a [TS]

00:38:33   beautiful way to in the book when [TS]

00:38:35   talking about i'm sticking the landing I [TS]

00:38:37   mean this is now that we're now that [TS]

00:38:39   we're safely behind many spoilers horns [TS]

00:38:41   balance of squiggly lines had a variable [TS]

00:38:45   city tonight [TS]

00:38:46   yeah so many spoilers horns uh add the [TS]

00:38:49   budget for this episode 4 large with [TS]

00:38:50   bringing extra extra read it [TS]

00:38:52   yeah the one thing i really appreciated [TS]

00:38:55   in this it it reminded me by the by the [TS]

00:38:57   end of the third one [TS]

00:38:58   it reminded me of the movie Penn & [TS]

00:39:00   Teller get killed [TS]

00:39:01   we're at the end of the movie [TS]

00:39:05   sure enough Penn & Teller get killed and [TS]

00:39:07   the camera pulls up in this long crane [TS]

00:39:10   shot or helicopter shot and and pens [TS]

00:39:12   voice comes on it goes what we named the [TS]

00:39:14   movie pen until we get killed what did [TS]

00:39:15   you expect would happen [TS]

00:39:17   yeah and it's like me yeah the the thing [TS]

00:39:20   I really like about this is that there's [TS]

00:39:23   no it's not a plot about saving the end [TS]

00:39:25   of the world it's not a part of about [TS]

00:39:27   trying to get out of it [TS]

00:39:28   it's just here's what's gonna happen [TS]

00:39:30   over here you know [TS]

00:39:33   oh yeah yeah and that that goes back to [TS]

00:39:35   what Lisa was saying about [TS]

00:39:37   and they thought they'd never blink on [TS]

00:39:39   it Scott mentioned this and I mentioned [TS]

00:39:42   it to an unprepossessing podcast and and [TS]

00:39:44   so I guess technically that would be [TS]

00:39:45   considered a spoiler but it really is [TS]

00:39:46   more like you want to give the [TS]

00:39:48   reassurance like you know this series is [TS]

00:39:50   what it's a it's about what it's about [TS]

00:39:52   and it would be a ripoff [TS]

00:39:54   if in the end there was a miracle and [TS]

00:39:56   and it doesn't happen and the way it [TS]

00:39:59   ends is we can talk about later but it's [TS]

00:40:02   you know I didn't feel like I am I was [TS]

00:40:05   ripped off and I I appreciate that does [TS]

00:40:08   what it says on the label this is what [TS]

00:40:09   the story is about it's not not about [TS]

00:40:12   that its didn't it's telling you the [TS]

00:40:14   truth and what it's about the the hard [TS]

00:40:16   thing to talk about when you're not [TS]

00:40:17   trying to spoil it when you say he stuck [TS]

00:40:19   the landing is he he does not shy away [TS]

00:40:22   from he doesn't swerve and say well [TS]

00:40:24   maybe in fact most of the information [TS]

00:40:26   you get as things go along is just [TS]

00:40:28   confirming its yeah this is gonna happen [TS]

00:40:32   righty you keep wanting that moment of [TS]

00:40:34   like well maybe and instead the [TS]

00:40:35   information like no no really it's not [TS]

00:40:37   gonna happen that would there they're [TS]

00:40:39   not going to survive this [TS]

00:40:41   it's just I and then you think well [TS]

00:40:42   maybe it's going to Indonesia maybe that [TS]

00:40:44   will be ok for us in the US [TS]

00:40:46   no that's not gonna be okay either well [TS]

00:40:48   what if we're away from the oceans and [TS]

00:40:50   we're in the know that's not going to [TS]

00:40:51   end it just keeps going like that and [TS]

00:40:54   yet [TS]

00:40:54   and in the end while he never blinks [TS]

00:40:58   from that what what you don't get [TS]

00:41:01   which I actually kind of love I I was [TS]

00:41:03   dreading it and I was happy not to see [TS]

00:41:05   it is you don't get to see what happens [TS]

00:41:07   next [TS]

00:41:07   no yes I completely agree because as [TS]

00:41:11   much as I'm curious about it i firmly [TS]

00:41:14   believe that some things should be left [TS]

00:41:15   up to your imagination right yeah it's [TS]

00:41:18   better that way right other books are [TS]

00:41:20   available that deeply depict the [TS]

00:41:22   horrible things that happened at the [TS]

00:41:24   very end of the world but here ya [TS]

00:41:26   because that an up note it takes to [TS]

00:41:28   country has Henry has had his journey [TS]

00:41:30   right he's taking his journey and if if [TS]

00:41:32   if what happens is sometime in the next [TS]

00:41:34   two hours some you know a shockwave [TS]

00:41:37   happens and and breaks their bones and [TS]

00:41:39   destroys the house and he bleeds to [TS]

00:41:41   death you're in or whatever it is you [TS]

00:41:43   know something terrible happens and they [TS]

00:41:45   all died right that's what's going to [TS]

00:41:46   happen next [TS]

00:41:47   it doesn't matter at this point it [TS]

00:41:49   doesn't matter because this is the part [TS]

00:41:50   that man [TS]

00:41:51   nurses the way it ends and and and i [TS]

00:41:53   wanted to talk a little bit about the [TS]

00:41:55   the mystery of a sort that's in the in [TS]

00:41:57   this not only does he take a little trip [TS]

00:41:59   but he ends up at the police station [TS]

00:42:01   where there's like a bunker that's been [TS]

00:42:03   constructed underneath where the fake [TS]

00:42:05   we're going to save the world cult that [TS]

00:42:08   includes his sister is going to end up [TS]

00:42:11   and this is where he finds his sister [TS]

00:42:12   and finds that finds that she's dead [TS]

00:42:15   he missed her by so very little time if [TS]

00:42:19   you would have not stopped to help [TS]

00:42:20   somebody else along the way Joe might [TS]

00:42:22   have been there in time to save her the [TS]

00:42:24   the way he deals with her murder the [TS]

00:42:25   person who murdered his sister the the [TS]

00:42:28   way he deals with that murder is just [TS]

00:42:29   phenomenal because it shows that again [TS]

00:42:31   and again he chooses to to stick to that [TS]

00:42:33   internal standard of civilization and he [TS]

00:42:35   chooses compassion right and it's almost [TS]

00:42:38   like he's subbing in what he wishes he [TS]

00:42:40   could have done for Nico for this woman [TS]

00:42:42   no you know and and he does point out [TS]

00:42:45   while you were you were tripping balls [TS]

00:42:46   at the time but there's a lot going on [TS]

00:42:48   and I i think one of the things I really [TS]

00:42:51   like about this in terms talk about your [TS]

00:42:53   wacky confrontation scenes in in [TS]

00:42:56   detective stories in or detective movies [TS]

00:42:59   and things like that the the the battle [TS]

00:43:01   in the bunker where we've got like an [TS]

00:43:03   extra guy who we didn't know he was [TS]

00:43:04   there because he was asleep or high or [TS]

00:43:07   something and and and all of that and [TS]

00:43:09   then I it ends up being a really great [TS]

00:43:12   kind of a dramatic action e climax to [TS]

00:43:17   the to this this mystery [TS]

00:43:20   I really like that I thought this like [TS]

00:43:21   so bizarre that we're gonna we're gonna [TS]

00:43:23   go down in the bunker where they're [TS]

00:43:25   supposed to be riding out to the end of [TS]

00:43:26   the world we're going to break open the [TS]

00:43:27   impregnable bunker and see who's down [TS]

00:43:29   there I I end and that gets just [TS]

00:43:32   increasingly weird i really enjoyed that [TS]

00:43:34   I thought that was so strange and I and [TS]

00:43:37   then in the end the choice Henry makes [TS]

00:43:40   is not to stay in the bunker [TS]

00:43:41   yeah I was a little heartbroken by [TS]

00:43:43   Cortez because I i really loved him to [TS]

00:43:45   the second book and when he shows up at [TS]

00:43:48   the end of the second book to police [TS]

00:43:49   house in a horse-drawn carriage and he's [TS]

00:43:51   got coffee and he's like what I just [TS]

00:43:53   over 25 and I'm like this is what the [TS]

00:43:55   house like this with the book needs this [TS]

00:43:57   random element of of levity and because [TS]

00:44:00   he kinda provided this this this this [TS]

00:44:02   wildcard well you know what the [TS]

00:44:04   trachomatis what like there was a [TS]

00:44:05   certain lightness of character I light [TS]

00:44:08   and then book number three it goes away [TS]

00:44:11   at the end of that was like Cortez why [TS]

00:44:13   did you have to because i like i like [TS]

00:44:16   that because he it they bring him in and [TS]

00:44:18   he is [TS]

00:44:19   yes he's funny but he is funny with an [TS]

00:44:21   edge in with the dark side and he is [TS]

00:44:23   he's not a good guy and I was worried [TS]

00:44:26   actually that he was going to soften him [TS]

00:44:28   up and have some sort of redemption arc [TS]

00:44:30   for him by the end and the fact that [TS]

00:44:32   didn't happen maybe I think just as [TS]

00:44:34   happy as the fact that he didn't works [TS]

00:44:36   out when it comes to killing the entire [TS]

00:44:38   Earth with an asteroid it was the same [TS]

00:44:39   kind of a same kind of with a realism [TS]

00:44:41   what kind of thing going on and another [TS]

00:44:44   thing that happened towards the end [TS]

00:44:45   there that i enjoyed was the fact that [TS]

00:44:47   not only is cortez sort of parallel you [TS]

00:44:51   be a the world and the asteroid but we [TS]

00:44:53   also have a weird little parallel 44 [TS]

00:44:55   palace himself because the we find out [TS]

00:44:58   that that would help there's an FBI [TS]

00:45:00   agent who he hasn't realized was an FBI [TS]

00:45:02   agent this whole time [TS]

00:45:04   who is also trying to find his sister [TS]

00:45:06   and trying to save her because he sort [TS]

00:45:09   of see the same thing in her that that [TS]

00:45:10   Palace does and they both fail and you [TS]

00:45:14   can feel bad for both of them [TS]

00:45:16   I think you're right about Cortez I just [TS]

00:45:18   I I always liked the trap of the the [TS]

00:45:21   Brogue who the road who decides to have [TS]

00:45:24   a last-minute change of heart and I [TS]

00:45:26   think you're right it would not have [TS]

00:45:27   worked here in a nice guy and maybe [TS]

00:45:30   that's what makes it more poignant is is [TS]

00:45:32   the fact that some people are true to [TS]

00:45:34   their natures even when there's no [TS]

00:45:35   reason not to be the I i also like how [TS]

00:45:37   the story comes to rest with the [TS]

00:45:39   exception of the the the Amish farm that [TS]

00:45:42   we get the very end the story comes to [TS]

00:45:44   rest at an empty police station [TS]

00:45:46   so we're back Henry is also back in a [TS]

00:45:49   new police station and and I like the [TS]

00:45:52   sense that it's sort of like there's the [TS]

00:45:54   vending machines in the kitchen and it's [TS]

00:45:56   sort of I I pictured it as the eunuch [TS]

00:45:58   strangely clean and together police [TS]

00:46:01   station that just has nobody in it but [TS]

00:46:03   this is Henry's this is where Henry gets [TS]

00:46:05   to solve his last case and he still [TS]

00:46:07   managed to find sort of a friend because [TS]

00:46:09   he's reading through the the journals of [TS]

00:46:11   that one detective recognize he liked [TS]

00:46:13   her he liked her [TS]

00:46:15   yeah it's in the connection right there [TS]

00:46:17   right she she figures out what's going [TS]

00:46:19   on and then the very sadly he he finally [TS]

00:46:22   puts together what her last entry means [TS]

00:46:25   and how that did that was a very bad day [TS]

00:46:27   the town [TS]

00:46:28   yeah yeah i I just I i love the fact [TS]

00:46:33   that he doesn't want to stay in the [TS]

00:46:35   bunker because part of me is like no [TS]

00:46:37   dude you got a bunker that they made up [TS]

00:46:39   they made a doomsday bunker and it's [TS]

00:46:40   doomsday how perfect is that and it's [TS]

00:46:42   open and you can just go in and they got [TS]

00:46:44   stuff down there and you can you know [TS]

00:46:45   who knows there's a vending machine with [TS]

00:46:47   candy Christian give it a shot you never [TS]

00:46:50   know and what I like that he that he [TS]

00:46:52   chooses not to do that right because it [TS]

00:46:54   goes back to what Lisa was saying that [TS]

00:46:56   this is about somebody you know in one [TS]

00:47:00   way this is Death with Dignity this is [TS]

00:47:01   him deciding he's going to go out his [TS]

00:47:04   you know in a in a civilized fashion and [TS]

00:47:07   the world is going to not end with a you [TS]

00:47:09   know just everybody tearing everything [TS]

00:47:11   apart but it's going to end with sort of [TS]

00:47:13   family and community and yeah I I don't [TS]

00:47:17   know you're gonna you're gonna go down [TS]

00:47:19   with your with your boots on and not [TS]

00:47:21   cowering in the ground in a hole hoping [TS]

00:47:24   to eke out a few more months and I like [TS]

00:47:28   that I like that that's the decision he [TS]

00:47:29   makes it [TS]

00:47:30   yeah yeah yeah I'm totally with amen [TS]

00:47:34   amen [TS]

00:47:35   barium good job Hank palace [TS]

00:47:38   good good job well I'm and how how [TS]

00:47:41   boring would have been if he had stayed [TS]

00:47:43   in the bunker right that's that's not [TS]

00:47:45   how it's going to end well that's true [TS]

00:47:46   right [TS]

00:47:47   the end and they lived in function for [TS]

00:47:49   Evan the end [TS]

00:47:50   yeah i mean really that's when you think [TS]

00:47:52   about I i would find that a much more [TS]

00:47:54   depressing endia even if there's some [TS]

00:47:56   sort of hope that in 15 years he can you [TS]

00:47:58   know continue on I just that would have [TS]

00:48:01   horrible existence that probably is i I [TS]

00:48:03   just I still have thoughts about that [TS]

00:48:05   poor girl down there all by herself like [TS]

00:48:08   but that did just going to go insane [TS]

00:48:10   here it's not okay so-so palace she said [TS]

00:48:14   I guess you're the last policeman the [TS]

00:48:17   edge that would not be something that [TS]

00:48:21   would not be some good i I don't I don't [TS]

00:48:23   advocate that anything i'm glad that it [TS]

00:48:25   didn't I I [TS]

00:48:26   I mean we didn't mention but i really [TS]

00:48:28   love where he kind of runs the runs the [TS]

00:48:31   gauntlet a little bit in terms of [TS]

00:48:32   getting to the Amish farm i really [TS]

00:48:34   enjoyed that not only doesn't meet that [TS]

00:48:35   he meets the wacky couple that like [TS]

00:48:37   naked couple for the RV and then [TS]

00:48:40   realizes that there is like is it like [TS]

00:48:43   metal work that's done by the there's [TS]

00:48:45   the standard concrete work that's not [TS]

00:48:47   great [TS]

00:48:47   yeah with a stamp from the Amish guy [TS]

00:48:49   puts that together and then he goes out [TS]

00:48:50   to the farm and is basically threatened [TS]

00:48:55   and told to leave and and with bodily [TS]

00:48:58   harm and chooses not to and I really [TS]

00:49:00   like that to that he's hard-headed at [TS]

00:49:03   that moment he just wants to get this [TS]

00:49:04   solved and I I'm not a bad guy you know [TS]

00:49:07   and I I just it's there's some moments [TS]

00:49:10   that really have stuck with me from this [TS]

00:49:11   book really if there's ever at you know [TS]

00:49:13   I've got nothing to lose sort of a time [TS]

00:49:15   and this is probably it so yeah I I [TS]

00:49:18   could see myself perhaps being even more [TS]

00:49:20   hard-headed than normal and and really [TS]

00:49:22   going for it in that sort of situation [TS]

00:49:24   because you know he can he keep sort of [TS]

00:49:26   saying to himself this is no I don't [TS]

00:49:28   have much time I've got to get this [TS]

00:49:30   figured out he really needs the [TS]

00:49:31   policeman he's a detective needs to [TS]

00:49:33   solve the mystery before it's all over [TS]

00:49:34   ya mean it really follows through the [TS]

00:49:37   classic noir troops of you know again [TS]

00:49:41   the the detective who has to find the [TS]

00:49:43   truth and and just this sort of streak [TS]

00:49:46   of nihilism except you know in a Philip [TS]

00:49:48   Marlowe novel the world isn't literally [TS]

00:49:49   going to end but here it is [TS]

00:49:52   but but again you know it's all those [TS]

00:49:54   troops that the Chandler inhabit were [TS]

00:49:56   using to exactly yeah these are these [TS]

00:49:59   are all detective stories and crime [TS]

00:50:02   stories there's just this whole a whole [TS]

00:50:03   other layer that mean the darkness of [TS]

00:50:05   something like like Anwar that might [TS]

00:50:08   that that might seem like where we where [TS]

00:50:10   is that coming from I guess it's coming [TS]

00:50:12   from the souls of corrupt people and [TS]

00:50:13   things like that it's like here as well [TS]

00:50:15   you know it's be astrally yeah it's [TS]

00:50:17   kinda like Raymond Chandler's on the [TS]

00:50:19   beach [TS]

00:50:19   yeah there you go wow yeah David does it [TS]

00:50:24   again [TS]

00:50:25   yeah Wow trouble so much coffee goes [TS]

00:50:28   he's done if you if you chose to be be [TS]

00:50:31   spoiled anyway and still haven't read [TS]

00:50:33   these books you should read them if you [TS]

00:50:34   like if you like it that but again as [TS]

00:50:36   Erica said you should probably be a good [TS]

00:50:38   place they are they are hot [TS]

00:50:40   word on where they're easy to read but [TS]

00:50:42   they they take you on an emotional [TS]

00:50:44   journey I mean you are journeying [TS]

00:50:45   through the it's it's it's tough [TS]

00:50:50   there's tough it's tough stuff and it's [TS]

00:50:52   a dark place and although it ends on [TS]

00:50:54   what is about note for a series of books [TS]

00:50:58   like this it's not that kind of up note [TS]

00:51:00   if they enter the world of note but it's [TS]

00:51:03   not that into you know what character [TS]

00:51:05   comes to rest at an appropriate place [TS]

00:51:08   yeah it's very satisfying from a [TS]

00:51:09   narrative perspective from an emotional [TS]

00:51:11   perspective you will be erect for about [TS]

00:51:13   2,400 please please [TS]

00:51:15   yeah you'll have full no i don't know if [TS]

00:51:18   the rest of you have this but I had the [TS]

00:51:20   what would I do [TS]

00:51:22   yeah that's why would you read a book [TS]

00:51:24   about the end of the world and i'll ask [TS]

00:51:25   yourself what you do at the end of the [TS]

00:51:27   world that's the Holy yeah and I i found [TS]

00:51:29   myself at and I'd I didn't get any [TS]

00:51:33   closer to clarity over the course of [TS]

00:51:34   three bones I I'm you know and I was I [TS]

00:51:36   was I was like well I know I wouldn't be [TS]

00:51:38   like this person or I would not want to [TS]

00:51:40   do that and then I thought why just [TS]

00:51:41   don't help [TS]

00:51:42   well you-you-you we need to find John [TS]

00:51:45   Syracuse's a mountaintop read i was just [TS]

00:51:48   gonna say i was just here to have a plan [TS]

00:51:50   he's gonna pick me up he's always got a [TS]

00:51:52   plan i was gonna say I'm gonna go go [TS]

00:51:54   hang out with jen Syracuse and not go [TS]

00:51:56   anywhere near legacy Black Snow not [TS]

00:52:00   Alexis house [TS]

00:52:01   why what is lex plenty and I guess you [TS]

00:52:03   got us all the BBQ well did you know [TS]

00:52:05   this was this was were you not on the [TS]

00:52:07   dogstars now I was no soda [TS]

00:52:10   well that's what I all well yeah you can [TS]

00:52:12   listen to that in here loud legs to the [TS]

00:52:14   lexus pairs for the lives of his [TS]

00:52:15   children would end would end their in [TS]

00:52:17   their lives in a gentle way before the [TS]

00:52:19   zombies come and John Syracuse's like no [TS]

00:52:22   no I got a plan [TS]

00:52:23   send your kids to me I'll take care of [TS]

00:52:25   them will be fine oh my god of the video [TS]

00:52:27   is your family to be comfortable John [TS]

00:52:31   Syracuse's got a solid lead he's gonna [TS]

00:52:33   break down there yeah he's got a plan [TS]

00:52:35   he's got a plan for all of us just like [TS]

00:52:36   Jesus that way yeah that's what I was [TS]

00:52:40   going for that and so thank you I'm just [TS]

00:52:44   admit you're bringing my imagery into [TS]

00:52:46   separate longest gospel at the end of [TS]

00:52:49   the world centerpiece will take care of [TS]

00:52:51   all of us don't worry in the open [TS]

00:52:53   basket together oh yes I see into the [TS]

00:52:58   hypercritical society that is to come [TS]

00:53:00   you can't pronounce it like that [TS]

00:53:03   this is the only time we have left her [TS]

00:53:05   this podcast is not you know like Star [TS]

00:53:07   yeah so did I you know again you need to [TS]

00:53:10   be in the right place you need to be [TS]

00:53:12   willing to take that journey but [TS]

00:53:13   especially if you like [TS]

00:53:15   good police story detective stories it [TS]

00:53:19   uh III I it was not work to go through [TS]

00:53:23   them it would have left an emotional [TS]

00:53:25   impact but they were all really really [TS]

00:53:27   enjoyable fun I don't you again [TS]

00:53:31   hey they pulled me through it they I I [TS]

00:53:35   did not want to stop reading at any [TS]

00:53:37   point in all three books i just wanted [TS]

00:53:39   to keep reading them so take that for [TS]

00:53:40   what it's worth that's a but not fun [TS]

00:53:43   sorry Erica I shouldn't say fun one is [TS]

00:53:46   the wrong leaves the wrong impression [TS]

00:53:48   another series that reminds me of is [TS]

00:53:50   Martin Cruz Smith's books about [TS]

00:53:52   detective Arcady Renko who starts it as [TS]

00:53:56   an ascot police detective when he goes [TS]

00:53:58   through all kinds of horrible jobs that [TS]

00:54:00   he is forced through after he pursued [TS]

00:54:02   the truth to it sin and then he winds up [TS]

00:54:05   being a detective again after the fall [TS]

00:54:07   of the Soviet Union and then again it's [TS]

00:54:10   sort of that that nihilistic hopeless [TS]

00:54:13   kind of existence although again doesn't [TS]

00:54:16   literally be in the end of the world but [TS]

00:54:19   it's that same kind of I don't think [TS]

00:54:22   I've mood [TS]

00:54:23   the detective alright well you've been [TS]

00:54:25   you've gotten our recommendations and [TS]

00:54:27   our warnings now listen to the smiths [TS]

00:54:33   all reading this Tim yet [TS]

00:54:34   yes certainly not have have I have a [TS]

00:54:37   bunch of the dvds of romantic comedies [TS]

00:54:39   ready to go in order for YouTube clips [TS]

00:54:42   of the stuff that makes you laugh or [TS]

00:54:44   whatever your comfort food is not such [TS]

00:54:45   all ready to go watch love actually yeah [TS]

00:54:48   so Erica not season 8 of Doctor Who that [TS]

00:54:51   right no have some some anyway before we [TS]

00:54:57   go I like to go around and ask people [TS]

00:54:59   what are you reading is there a book [TS]

00:55:01   that you've read lately or that you're [TS]

00:55:03   really that [TS]

00:55:04   no that you just finished that you would [TS]

00:55:06   like to or again you could be recently [TS]

00:55:09   that you'd like to recommend or mention [TS]

00:55:11   that you you read this is a good time to [TS]

00:55:13   do that because this is the time where [TS]

00:55:14   I'm going to ask you that David what are [TS]

00:55:15   you reading [TS]

00:55:16   well I'm since I'm in writing mode right [TS]

00:55:19   now I'm all nonfiction because if i [TS]

00:55:22   start reading fiction i will start just [TS]

00:55:25   done consciously picking up the style of [TS]

00:55:28   whatever i'm reading and that's not a [TS]

00:55:29   good thing so i just finished a book [TS]

00:55:32   called when Magoo flew the history of [TS]

00:55:35   the UPA animation studio where they did [TS]

00:55:38   mr. Magoo and Gerald blowing blowing but [TS]

00:55:41   they also did some brilliant standalone [TS]

00:55:43   like adaptations of james thurber and [TS]

00:55:46   Edgar Allan Poe and a lot of the graphic [TS]

00:55:51   work they did his influence advertising [TS]

00:55:54   and animation since then so it's really [TS]

00:55:57   fascinating book and then it's there was [TS]

00:55:59   sort of an idyllic studio that just sort [TS]

00:56:02   of fell apart when when push came to [TS]

00:56:05   shove but it's it's a really interesting [TS]

00:56:07   story and then i went from that into yes [TS]

00:56:11   please by Amy Poehler because Amy [TS]

00:56:13   Poehler Erica what are you reading [TS]

00:56:16   well I i need some comfort reading [TS]

00:56:19   actually if you're going back so i [TS]

00:56:21   reread one of my favorite probably my [TS]

00:56:25   favorite Sarah Addison Ellen books and i [TS]

00:56:27   think i mentioned her on the last book [TS]

00:56:29   club the first book I ever read by her [TS]

00:56:31   was called the sugar queen and it's a [TS]

00:56:33   it's about a young girl who [TS]

00:56:35   well she's actually not that young just [TS]

00:56:36   like 27 but she is very very sheltered [TS]

00:56:39   and her mother has been drinking [TS]

00:56:42   sheltering her on purpose because she [TS]

00:56:44   just wanted to take care of her and and [TS]

00:56:46   she eats a lot and she's up a heroine a [TS]

00:56:49   main character who is is buried [TS]

00:56:53   basically overweight and they don't make [TS]

00:56:54   a big deal about it in the book but it [TS]

00:56:56   is it is one of the attributes of her [TS]

00:56:59   and she comes home one day to find a one [TS]

00:57:02   of these sort of tawdry women in town [TS]

00:57:03   hiding in her closet and blackmails her [TS]

00:57:06   because she finds her secret stash of [TS]

00:57:07   candy in the back of this closet and the [TS]

00:57:11   head says you need to let me hide here [TS]

00:57:12   i'm gonna tell everybody about about [TS]

00:57:14   this and then it's a very sort of [TS]

00:57:16   heartwarming [TS]

00:57:17   re over the course of it that this girl [TS]

00:57:20   gets helped by the more worldly woman [TS]

00:57:23   and and there's that there's a little [TS]

00:57:25   bit of supernatural stuff going on which [TS]

00:57:27   would i would ruin the book if I if I [TS]

00:57:29   explain it in case anybody wants to read [TS]

00:57:31   it so i had to read that again to kind [TS]

00:57:34   of calm myself and make myself happy and [TS]

00:57:36   then the other thing I've been reading [TS]

00:57:37   is the first issue of uncanny magazine [TS]

00:57:40   which is a new magazine of short fiction [TS]

00:57:43   and interviews and and essays and stuff [TS]

00:57:47   that I am producing the podcast [TS]

00:57:49   co-producing with with my husband [TS]

00:57:52   Stephen co-producing the podcast for so [TS]

00:57:54   I got a free subscription [TS]

00:57:57   yeah yeah I saw you tweeting about that [TS]

00:58:00   today I have a Kickstarter subscription [TS]

00:58:02   for that so yeah I think I actually did [TS]

00:58:04   it actually did kick in money on [TS]

00:58:05   Kickstarter so technically it wasn't [TS]

00:58:07   free but will work for subscription but [TS]

00:58:09   I've been really enjoying it [TS]

00:58:11   there are some excellent excellent [TS]

00:58:12   stories in there and I'm fine I've [TS]

00:58:15   really been enjoying I'm still not quite [TS]

00:58:17   all the way through the first one [TS]

00:58:18   because I've been so busy but I'm [TS]

00:58:19   getting there and I'm loving it right [TS]

00:58:22   Lisa what are you reading I just [TS]

00:58:24   finished station 11 and I can't shut up [TS]

00:58:26   about it [TS]

00:58:26   by Emily st. John mandal and I really [TS]

00:58:31   hope we do in a comfortable book about [TS]

00:58:33   this soon because yeah that's going to [TS]

00:58:35   be on the agenda for for january it is [TS]

00:58:37   basically do remember how during the [TS]

00:58:39   stand podcast we were like well how [TS]

00:58:41   would this work in an era of the [TS]

00:58:42   internet [TS]

00:58:44   oh and this book we're not quite sure [TS]

00:58:45   well this book basically answers that [TS]

00:58:47   question [TS]

00:58:48   uh-huh and it's wonderful and lyrical [TS]

00:58:51   and there are that there there's a [TS]

00:58:56   there's a there's an indie comics plot [TS]

00:58:58   line that runs through it as well as the [TS]

00:59:00   as well as a fluid devastates into the [TS]

00:59:01   world [TS]

00:59:02   it's beautiful and again I can't stop [TS]

00:59:06   thinking about it the other things I've [TS]

00:59:08   been reading i'm a huge harry s temper [TS]

00:59:11   fan and I don't think she gets enough [TS]

00:59:14   credit in sci-fi circles and i finished [TS]

00:59:16   her most recent novel which is fish [TS]

00:59:18   tales which is about preparing for in [TS]

00:59:21   the coming environmental apocalypse [TS]

00:59:23   ok on and along those lines I am [TS]

00:59:27   currently i'm also reading slow [TS]

00:59:28   apocalypse by John Varley [TS]

00:59:30   haha it's looking at once inserted some [TS]

00:59:32   sort of romantic story here but pepper [TS]

00:59:35   and pepper and barley or both longtime [TS]

00:59:37   favorites of mine i am more engaged in [TS]

00:59:41   their older work but i have not yet [TS]

00:59:43   figured out whether it's because I was a [TS]

00:59:45   younger reader than and it was easier to [TS]

00:59:48   fall into books and not climb out or if [TS]

00:59:53   you know it's it's it's old but on old [TS]

00:59:55   reader means an old author and there's a [TS]

00:59:57   lot of baggage on both ends I don't know [TS]

00:59:58   but I'm [TS]

00:59:58   but I'm [TS]

01:00:00   hopeful that the that barleys book slow [TS]

01:00:02   apocalipsis is a return to form because [TS]

01:00:04   he kind of veered off track with his [TS]

01:00:05   mark series and i'm also reading william [TS]

01:00:09   gibson's the peripherals in fit the [TS]

01:00:11   peripheral fits and starts [TS]

01:00:13   well the thing about Gibson is if I have [TS]

01:00:14   like six hours and a head cold it's [TS]

01:00:17   really really fun because you know you [TS]

01:00:19   just like take a lot of sudafed and it [TS]

01:00:23   lets you fall right into his prose style [TS]

01:00:25   because these protocells is [TS]

01:00:26   simultaneously spare and overheated [TS]

01:00:29   so you know reading so to me totally [TS]

01:00:32   he's kind of equivalent of like that [TS]

01:00:34   that out of that that out of your head [TS]

01:00:36   feeling that you get the first you have [TS]

01:00:37   a really bad cold so I like to read and [TS]

01:00:39   what I'm sit just because i had this way [TS]

01:00:41   like what I'm feeling in my head matches [TS]

01:00:43   up with anything on the screen so [TS]

01:00:45   station eleven Scott multi the mentioned [TS]

01:00:48   at the beginning helping his mom good [TS]

01:00:50   son etc etc he all he said that station [TS]

01:00:54   11 is I believe his favorite book of the [TS]

01:00:56   year will have to check in with him its [TS]

01:00:59   center on their end episode to make sure [TS]

01:01:01   but yeah everybody likes it and I've got [TS]

01:01:04   it in the queue but I haven't I haven't [TS]

01:01:05   read it yet i'm currently reading [TS]

01:01:08   ancillary sword by unlucky the sequel to [TS]

01:01:10   Angela ancillary justice about [TS]

01:01:12   two-thirds of the way through it love it [TS]

01:01:14   another good one and I i finished the [TS]

01:01:18   madness of angels which I mentioned on [TS]

01:01:19   the previous podcast the the London [TS]

01:01:22   urban fantasy podcast that i was reading [TS]

01:01:24   I did finish that that was very long it [TS]

01:01:26   was good but it was so long very long so [TS]

01:01:29   I'm not going to come back to that [TS]

01:01:30   series for a while I think and the book [TS]

01:01:32   that I finished is the peripheral by [TS]

01:01:35   william gibson which starts it is what [TS]

01:01:39   may be the most confused I've been in [TS]

01:01:41   the science-fiction book in a long time [TS]

01:01:43   where it starts where I like I'm not [TS]

01:01:45   sure who these people are or what [TS]

01:01:47   they're doing or what I'm supposedly [TS]

01:01:49   seeing and then there's a moment for me [TS]

01:01:51   there's a moment I don't know it i read [TS]

01:01:55   on my Kindle so I'm gonna say like [TS]

01:01:56   fifteen percent of the way through [TS]

01:01:57   fifteen twenty percent of the way [TS]

01:01:59   through where I'm like oh and at that [TS]

01:02:01   point it was a you know it was [TS]

01:02:04   delightful actually the rest of the way [TS]

01:02:05   through it is a very strange book with a [TS]

01:02:07   very strange premise [TS]

01:02:10   yes it's so we [TS]

01:02:12   and I'm not sure I'm not sure I like how [TS]

01:02:15   it ends only because i'm not quite sure [TS]

01:02:17   I kind of felt like he just said ok [TS]

01:02:20   that's enough [TS]

01:02:21   show's over everybody and then and then [TS]

01:02:23   the end of the story was hoping I ok [TS]

01:02:25   because I can I read it was like oh yeah [TS]

01:02:28   okay that was a lot of fun that was a [TS]

01:02:29   fun ride and then the next day I was [TS]

01:02:31   thinking about wait how does it end [TS]

01:02:33   that's what you know and it's not like [TS]

01:02:35   it ends like to be continued to [TS]

01:02:36   something it's more like really okay [TS]

01:02:38   that was I guess that was the end he [TS]

01:02:41   wanted it in strangely i guess i would [TS]

01:02:44   say but I i found it so enjoyable to go [TS]

01:02:46   from being completely baffled about what [TS]

01:02:49   I was reading to getting it and then [TS]

01:02:51   taking sort of delight in the weird [TS]

01:02:53   alternate futures that we see and that's [TS]

01:02:57   a little hint [TS]

01:02:58   there's two timelines that are [TS]

01:03:00   intersecting and various it's so bizarre [TS]

01:03:03   I'll stock up on the city Feathersword [TS]

01:03:05   oh yeah you mean you said you may need [TS]

01:03:07   some extra extra nyquil to defense [TS]

01:03:12   oh my god that were just right but [TS]

01:03:14   anyway I Indian I didn't do it overall [TS]

01:03:16   does not endorse robotripping before six [TS]

01:03:19   seven but but uh you know except for [TS]

01:03:21   wave gets it apparently but anyway [TS]

01:03:22   wherever I i enjoyed reading it and then [TS]

01:03:26   afterward I was like what was that which [TS]

01:03:29   is kind of funny but it was it was fun [TS]

01:03:31   to read it so yeah that's what i'm [TS]

01:03:33   reading and that means we've reached the [TS]

01:03:34   end [TS]

01:03:35   mhm that's a podcast we did a podcast we [TS]

01:03:37   talk about books i like talking about [TS]

01:03:39   books we should do we should do state [TS]

01:03:41   station eleven i think we're gonna have [TS]

01:03:42   to do that [TS]

01:03:43   yeah oh my god will America just opt out [TS]

01:03:47   yeah it's a find a happier book [TS]

01:03:50   why do we keep reading these apocalypse [TS]

01:03:52   books I don't all of my friends to read [TS]

01:03:54   this book club quality books and went [TS]

01:03:55   crazy over Donna Tartt and all that all [TS]

01:03:57   of them are just hysterical with joy [TS]

01:04:00   over station eleven as well it really is [TS]

01:04:02   one of these books that works across [TS]

01:04:03   multiple audiences it so it's on all the [TS]

01:04:06   10 best books of the year list that I've [TS]

01:04:08   seen coming out [TS]

01:04:09   it's definitely it's it's a it's a site [TS]

01:04:13   guy stewie kind of I've wanted white [TS]

01:04:15   look so far was the first know the first [TS]

01:04:17   time I went straight through and then [TS]

01:04:18   the second time I went back because its [TS]

01:04:20   nonlinear so the first time I read it [TS]

01:04:22   through and then the second time I went [TS]

01:04:24   back because i read i have it on my [TS]

01:04:26   kindle [TS]

01:04:26   second time I went back and picked apart [TS]

01:04:27   certain plot threads to see how well [TS]

01:04:29   they hung together and how well they [TS]

01:04:31   spin out individually and that and [TS]

01:04:33   rereading it the second time just maybe [TS]

01:04:35   like it more good son yeah it's oh my [TS]

01:04:38   god is amazing [TS]

01:04:39   alright so stay tuned for that in [TS]

01:04:41   January but that at that wraps up this [TS]
