2: The 7th Guest

00:00:00   so I vary wildly unrelated question for mister Siracusa [TS]

00:00:05   what the hell happened with this PlayStation 4 thing as I don't really [TS]

00:00:10   follow video games and all but oh my god that the internets went crazy over there [TS]

00:00:14   I guess it was like a crazy they went fairly minor is that wherever it is all [TS]

00:00:19   kinds I think everyone's mind was blown about how little their mind was blown [TS]

00:00:22   over the value that is exactly right I don't get it at all because like they do [TS]

00:00:31   this with every new console and maybe people are getting more and more work [TS]

00:00:34   done that but they always do something like this but they always dole out the [TS]

00:00:37   information like Nintendo's the king of this that we they were like we are we [TS]

00:00:43   have a new console coming in and it's called the revolution and like they had [TS]

00:00:46   a press conference about that but intelligent and on that note I'm I said [TS]

00:00:49   it's called the revolution and it's the size of three DVD has stacked on top of [TS]

00:00:54   each other and the control scheme is very interesting and i can tell you [TS]

00:00:58   anything else just you know the next press conference like ok now is like so [TS]

00:01:02   long even if I showed you ok here is a little box but the control scheme is [TS]

00:01:05   really need as they grow up healthy controls and then finally here is the [TS]

00:01:09   new console here the box here with the name isn't here to control it was like [TS]

00:01:12   seven press conference over the course of a year slowing going out information [TS]

00:01:15   about the week right that's how they do it you know this is the first press [TS]

00:01:19   conference I'm surprised they even showed a picture of the controller I'm [TS]

00:01:22   surprised the shower in the specs learning new with those all we're from [TS]

00:01:25   all the rumors and everything and they more or less confirm those plus or minus [TS]

00:01:29   a few details like you know in this internet age we all we really know like [TS]

00:01:33   it as well as articles I think we do one of them you know Durango vs Orbis [TS]

00:01:38   the two code names of Microsoft and Sony consoles its like we have them down to [TS]

00:01:42   the individual components that are gonna be a motherboards you never gonna give [TS]

00:01:46   never gonna announce price until it's practically a for sale sign anyone [TS]

00:01:49   expecting prices crazy all you gotta show me the box who cares I mean like [TS]

00:01:52   they they showed the box of the PlayStation 3 and then there wasn't a [TS]

00:01:58   box with a ship to show the controller PlayStation 3 not within the control of [TS]

00:02:01   the ship I don't know why anyone is upset about any of this as far as I'm [TS]

00:02:06   concerned they this was like the first press release the first press conference [TS]

00:02:11   they showed a bunch of stuff [TS]

00:02:13   probably about the same amount of stuff I expected them to show anyone here [TS]

00:02:17   expected to see a price in a date and that date was like March you were crazy [TS]

00:02:21   so I'm kidding aside [TS]

00:02:24   kidding aside you were not disappointed by this now it's exactly what I expected [TS]

00:02:28   I guess you know I was disappointed by the controller but you know I can't say [TS]

00:02:33   that I was unexpected and I was pleasantly surprised about the RAM which [TS]

00:02:36   was double the rumored amount assuming that someone actually stick with that [TS]

00:02:39   says a lot of things like until the product ships so i'm i'm still get a [TS]

00:02:46   thumbs up all by one despite the controller was interesting to you is [TS]

00:02:49   that the architecture they picked up with initially said its its x86 CPUs [TS]

00:02:54   from AMD and eight gigs of shared ran with video and main room but some beefy [TS]

00:02:59   AMD video card that's basically the the modern version of the Xbox one and and [TS]

00:03:06   and the Xbox moment came out because it had like a seven thirty three megahertz [TS]

00:03:10   know but such a piece of crap no honestly this is a fantastic system was [TS]

00:03:18   not offended because it was a cobbled together a terrible PC and try to differ [TS]

00:03:23   I I would say it was effectively it was like a 72 megahertz pentium something [TS]

00:03:29   with a Geforce three that's basically what it was like you know there if they [TS]

00:03:33   were they were both custom parts but that if you open it up you look like it [TS]

00:03:37   and take it to pieces will it blend machine and a black box and so there you [TS]

00:03:43   go [TS]

00:03:43   the one thing that helped them alot was the making games which is DirectX and [TS]

00:03:47   and it was it was easy to program for which many consoles are very hard to [TS]

00:03:51   program for or or at least to extract a lot of good performance out of and and [TS]

00:03:56   you know it was it had so many advantages it's interesting now that and [TS]

00:04:01   the Xbox went away from the architecture for the 360 and the PC the PlayStation 2 [TS]

00:04:06   ps2 and ps3 were both ridiculously hyper whatever weird CPUs they had but you're [TS]

00:04:12   always very hard to program for especially the is the ps3 of the Emotion [TS]

00:04:15   Engine are the best 023 his cell [TS]

00:04:19   everyone especially the cells being very hard to program for efficiently at least [TS]

00:04:26   and about the ps2 though is it cost about as much as the GPU an original [TS]

00:04:30   Xbox like the entire Michelle yeah that's a good thing is like I can't see [TS]

00:04:34   this whatever this P as far as I can see that being an expensive long-term mean [TS]

00:04:38   the ps3 launched it was at five hundred [TS]

00:04:42   gonna be expensive it can be probably a reason everyone x86 this generation is [TS]

00:04:48   because x86 is finally got the power use it under control because the Xbox one [TS]

00:04:54   was before [TS]

00:04:55   Intel had gotten their chips down in power like it was before the the core [TS]

00:05:00   architecture you know before Apple about this but it was also before the stupid [TS]

00:05:04   Pentium 4 network architecture that was so wasteful I know but it was still is [TS]

00:05:08   it was nothing compared to the power sipping little to no washing machine CPU [TS]

00:05:13   that's in the PlayStation 1 into like consoles used incredibly cheap when we [TS]

00:05:17   think so that's why the Xbox or so huge that's why it was so hot you know until [TS]

00:05:21   everyone's power BC and the next generation because they still haven't [TS]

00:05:24   gone up and that was sweet spot is PowerPC and ATI and then this finally [TS]

00:05:29   now in the modern age the the x86 tax isn't that bad you can get a reasonably [TS]

00:05:34   low-powered x86 CPU and repair really the reason the PC parts this time around [TS]

00:05:41   is because neither player Microsoft or Sony have the kind of money to invest in [TS]

00:05:47   all custom stuff like sony did something can't afford to do the cell again [TS]

00:05:51   despite you know whether you like the solid don't like it cost them tremendous [TS]

00:05:55   amount of mine to develop this crazy ass new thing on their own they could not [TS]

00:05:59   put that kind of investment didn't want to and microsoft also didn't want to pay [TS]

00:06:03   for IBM to make their own crazy CPU GPU thing like they did with the Xbox [TS]

00:06:07   everything we are both not in a position to do that this time we have to go with [TS]

00:06:13   commodity parts there's not enough of an upside for us to do custom so they both [TS]

00:06:16   go to community park and wait for forgive my ignorance on this I don't [TS]

00:06:19   know anything about what the next Xbox murder plan to have a way I'm D CPU [TS]

00:06:24   and NVIDIA GPU representative use the same for both formerly ATI yeah I'm [TS]

00:06:33   company but yeah they're the same I mean it's that they were close to the same [TS]

00:06:37   PSD know that the Xbox 360 doesn't have a Cell processor but they both had GB [TS]

00:06:43   using a TI and they both had PowerPC course inside their CPUs and sell that [TS]

00:06:47   also some other crazy stuff and NVIDIA GPU and there's like that but did there [TS]

00:06:52   there are different you should also an article in its short enough you can read [TS]

00:06:58   through the differences and mother decided to do it look like a difference [TS]

00:07:01   gonna be the Microsoft was going to have double the RAM of the the Sony box but [TS]

00:07:07   but but it was slower RAM and look at the Microsoft box and said ok why would [TS]

00:07:12   you put that much RAM and a game console it's it's too much and too slow for you [TS]

00:07:17   to use to make up for the slowness of the RAM the next Xbox has dedicated an [TS]

00:07:22   embedded SRAM like thirty two megabytes of a kind of like how the the GameCube [TS]

00:07:27   dated 22 have one really super fast regions you can use for cash or nothing [TS]

00:07:32   like gramm partisan and other data you need to trust by and then an enormous [TS]

00:07:36   pool much slower RAM and the theory behind that is that Microsoft nothing [TS]

00:07:40   microsoft box was going to be like a DVR and media center [TS]

00:07:44   games when you have access to all that ramzi gigs began to get like five digs [TS]

00:07:48   out or something in the rest of it will be dedicated to like just doing like you [TS]

00:07:52   know media center temp activities which were granted the same time is your games [TS]

00:07:57   whereas a sunny one was supposedly coming with four gigs of super duper you [TS]

00:08:00   know four gigs of DDR 5 which stop sign video card that would be unified pool [TS]

00:08:05   all of its really fast and don't need a special cash cost of but there's not [TS]

00:08:08   enough left over for you to be doing dedicated you know the media center DVR [TS]

00:08:12   whatever functionality but now that Sony has come out with eight I don't know if [TS]

00:08:17   they just changed their mind and met with a demand that's eight gigs of DDR 5 [TS]

00:08:21   assuming that's what's in there I still seem to be in the presentation but I [TS]

00:08:24   just the number 12 on by the way the the PlayStation 1 supposedly has more GPU [TS]

00:08:30   cores as well so it was a marked it was more interesting fight with the rumored [TS]

00:08:34   specs now the real specs are out [TS]

00:08:36   assuming that the rumored Xbox bexar correct the Sony one is just more [TS]

00:08:40   powerful and and always has passed around the same amount more GPU cores [TS]

00:08:46   and then the Xbox one as I guess it will have its crazy ass connects stuff on [TS]

00:08:51   there looking very similar this generation and that's very end and then [TS]

00:08:58   you also throw in his ass valve box thing to happen that is just a PC I mean [TS]

00:09:03   well but the funny thing is like here now we're gonna have two possibly three [TS]

00:09:09   consoles that are extremely similar to PC hardware that's what I'm saying like [TS]

00:09:17   I think the ps4 is not like PC hardware PC don't have eight gigabytes of GV the [TS]

00:09:23   r5 RAM they have memory for the computer and a CPU for the computer and then I [TS]

00:09:27   have a GPU and then there's ramen the video card [TS]

00:09:30   separate pools of vary wildly different memory one of its really close to the [TS]

00:09:34   dedicated GPU you know and this this is a very different arrangement than having [TS]

00:09:38   a unified super fast RAM for the entire thing and then like this is dedicated to [TS]

00:09:44   decode hardware on the only thing for it so they can do it you know like [TS]

00:09:48   real-time screen capture video of you playing like the ps4 is not gonna look [TS]

00:09:52   like it's 10 bucks team i think is literally going to be a PC is gonna be [TS]

00:09:55   Rams gonna be view and was gonna be GPUs gonna be CPU that is very different [TS]

00:10:00   aren't directly from the ps4 and that's even before you start getting into all [TS]

00:10:03   the little dedicated chips for all the data connection and even before you get [TS]

00:10:06   into how much closer you can get to the metal on the visa on the PlayStation [TS]

00:10:12   when running games for it so I expect ps4 games to look as good as the steam [TS]

00:10:17   box games out of the gate assuming assuming anyone ever makes a man who is [TS]

00:10:21   a company like that distance something company is making box thing I know I [TS]

00:10:25   don't know what about the plan is but like they should they should make their [TS]

00:10:29   own hardware or pick one hardware vendor make one single thing not be like oh [TS]

00:10:33   it's a free for anyone to make a game pc their beauty I can't think Marco to go [TS]

00:10:40   back quite a while actually what what is it that you like so much about the Xbox [TS]

00:10:43   one and I ask because the friends of mine that I have [TS]

00:10:47   that that adored the Xbox one in it seems to me they adored it more for the [TS]

00:10:52   hockey mahdi things you could do with it than they did for the actual stock Xbox [TS]

00:10:57   does does a question makes [TS]

00:10:59   and I bought mine actually pre hacked because I didn't want to mess it up but [TS]

00:11:04   I I bought my own Xbox in like 2004 I think about which doesn't want something [TS]

00:11:11   that was well into the cut the consoles lifespan and it was it was very nice I [TS]

00:11:16   bought it mainly as a 16 bit emulator for my TV and and some media center [TS]

00:11:23   functions like that originally XBMC running all that it was a fantastic for [TS]

00:11:29   that but as as a gaming console what I liked about the Xbox one was that they [TS]

00:11:37   really went all out on the hardware and and they really they really had a few [TS]

00:11:42   very good innovations one of the biggest ones where there's breakaway controller [TS]

00:11:47   cords remember those yeah yeah you know is better than paraguay controller [TS]

00:11:51   courts Marco wireless venture called innovation well yeah but you're in your [TS]

00:11:58   break going control of guards at the time everything still have wires and so [TS]

00:12:02   if you're going to have you heard if you're gonna have a bunch of wires [TS]

00:12:07   that's a very good way to do it and and they also had like they had an auto [TS]

00:12:13   switching Ethernet port on the back it was the first console as far as I know [TS]

00:12:16   ever to have Ethernet at all and to have it built in every console was awesome [TS]

00:12:20   and it was all just watching so that you can use a straight through or crossover [TS]

00:12:23   cable between two Xboxes not make any would just make it work which on Gigabit [TS]

00:12:28   I think all Gigabit ports have that but that was only hundred megabit and so it [TS]

00:12:31   was optional that time and they put that in as little little trick and had all [TS]

00:12:35   sorts of like neat little things [TS]

00:12:36   interface stuff like that that that you that was very ahead of its time and in [TS]

00:12:43   addition to being a pretty powerful system graphics was so overall I I [TS]

00:12:48   really enjoyed even I don't know until relatively late in life span was [TS]

00:12:53   fantastic system and what's weird is in this is totally dating me well [TS]

00:13:00   maybe John who probably was well ahead of me on this but I in a market that [TS]

00:13:05   you've done this to when you when you talk about internet connection on a [TS]

00:13:08   console I don't know why but the first thing that jumps to mind is me when I'm [TS]

00:13:13   like 10 playing like descent one and like wolf three in 3d but Duke Duke [TS]

00:13:19   Nukem 3d in like June on serial no modem cables strung together in like my dad's [TS]

00:13:26   office or whatever so my friends bring their freakin tower computer and the [TS]

00:13:30   eight hundred-pound 15 inch monitors over we would have liked a predecessor [TS]

00:13:35   to a LAN party in in you know and that was how I spent my Friday or Saturday [TS]

00:13:40   evenings when I was like 10 playing these games against my friends locally [TS]

00:13:44   and then we thought we were really hot shit when we would figure out how to do [TS]

00:13:49   it over dial-up which by the way was so unreliable and so slow that it never [TS]

00:13:53   worked anyway but I mean I did you guys also do that sort of ridiculous crap in [TS]

00:13:58   your yeah I mean almost every weekend in high school and even like like the [TS]

00:14:01   summer summers in college my friends I would do as we were all home almost [TS]

00:14:05   every weekend in high school that we would we would halt our our computers [TS]

00:14:09   and our CRT monitors to whoever's house had had the hub at the time but [TS]

00:14:16   different people at different times there was before Wireless also so we [TS]

00:14:20   would just have very long network cable like duct tape to the ceiling and down [TS]

00:14:24   the stairs and everything in it was it we would spend like six hours setting we [TS]

00:14:28   would like we would start the game at midnight [TS]

00:14:31   just be so long just setting it up trying all the computer to see each [TS]

00:14:35   other on the network properly it was a disaster and you know people have their [TS]

00:14:39   big CRT sitting on the coffee table and everyone crammed in the basement got it [TS]

00:14:44   was but we had a blast it was tons of fun and I like now we can all just do [TS]

00:14:48   that with laptops or iPads and have just as much fun but there really is [TS]

00:14:54   something about local multiplayer I just I love that is for certain types we [TS]

00:15:01   would almost always play our DS's and and for especially for that for that [TS]

00:15:05   game type I mean it's just it's such a fantastic set up and it's so much better [TS]

00:15:08   than playing online it's so much better than [TS]

00:15:12   then split screen all-in-one TV from a consoling it's it's fantastic and now [TS]

00:15:17   now the hardware is awesome we all have enough money to afford laptops now and [TS]

00:15:21   laptops are all good enough to play games now and now we live in different [TS]

00:15:25   places and have kids and stuff tomorrow to visit ever doing stuff it's kind of [TS]

00:15:30   sad John how much damage I presume you were an expert in all of these things [TS]

00:15:34   but did you get involved in all this card really would have liked networking [TS]

00:15:38   in my house until I went off to college [TS]

00:15:41   AppleTalk was awesome for this example talk the discovery protocol when you're [TS]

00:15:47   talking over you can see everyone else who is also on the networks that [TS]

00:15:50   simplified setup really just the plug things together with AppleTalk cables [TS]

00:15:54   everyone can see everyone else and I games like marathon stop supporting [TS]

00:15:57   Apple talks you just fire it up [TS]

00:15:59   LCW join up and play was like really easy especially at you know like college [TS]

00:16:03   computer labs where all the Macs were there and they're all connected with [TS]

00:16:06   Apple targeted marathon all them and you've got you know instantly and party [TS]

00:16:10   in the computer lab even then a problem there though is that you need two things [TS]

00:16:14   that don't exist [TS]

00:16:15   friends with Max in the nineties and games from colleges colleges the max for [TS]

00:16:21   the labs are is filled with Miami had beheaded marathon which is all you [TS]

00:16:24   really need it and play I did play doom on the Mac over a modem I believe it was [TS]

00:16:31   after I come back on college and played against somebody that they had you ever [TS]

00:16:38   hear of a vaara of are you wanna pronounce it that was a great game with [TS]

00:16:45   AppleTalk networking it was non texter map just like flat shaded polygons like [TS]

00:16:50   kind of like a game where did your direction of travel in the direction [TS]

00:16:54   that your head to carry the guns were pointing were independent of each other [TS]

00:16:57   too complicated for modern game or certainly too complicated for console [TS]

00:17:01   that very interesting to play over the network especially colleges because the [TS]

00:17:08   college you had an AppleTalk network but you also had an Ethernet connection to [TS]

00:17:12   the Internet which are just like amazing coming from dial-up right so you can [TS]

00:17:15   play people and you know far off places over your Ethernet connection that was [TS]

00:17:20   like magic remember doing that on the [TS]

00:17:22   you can only get on the on the the lab computers because back in your dorm you [TS]

00:17:26   get a modem and there was a non-starter you can play online games over Ethernet [TS]

00:17:29   over the internet at the college it was way easier because you were on a network [TS]

00:17:35   of computers are you had labs you know it in high school when you when you get [TS]

00:17:38   home on your computer and of course before LCD monitors and laptops that was [TS]

00:17:43   it was and wireless it was so much more involved I never to take my computers [TS]

00:17:48   anyplace my precious beautiful [TS]

00:17:51   carry them in a car and light box and checkers you know I would never really [TS]

00:17:55   crummy the like like you know you always had max right so by definition you were [TS]

00:18:01   never building a computer for me like I had this this weird half have had [TS]

00:18:06   together tower that I had assembled myself like oh hell no part of it really [TS]

00:18:11   felt particularly like nice or fragile [TS]

00:18:14   is kinda like this that's why i like two Xboxes look like it was built like I [TS]

00:18:20   know the Xbox huge law it really like and I i even had a full tower case not a [TS]

00:18:27   mid-tower a full tower they wanted friends with us cases do I went over to [TS]

00:18:31   their house and play their PC games and then no no good I still miss RTS as with [TS]

00:18:39   local multiplayer [TS]

00:18:42   I actually did play some I like I played Starcraft and Conquer Red Alert some but [TS]

00:18:50   you know what I miss the days back in the day Marco when you when I would play [TS]

00:18:55   Transport Tycoon together oh yeah it was it was a really honest I know I didn't [TS]

00:19:03   hear a noise I think we would have some pointed us to play Transport Tycoon the [TS]

00:19:07   great thing is Transport Tycoon which is again that nobody had ever heard of as [TS]

00:19:10   far as I knew it apparently has enough of a cult following that now there's a [TS]

00:19:16   huge open source open TTD for open transfer Transport Tycoon Deluxe you can [TS]

00:19:21   get a modern engine for Transport Tycoon these all the old assets all the alarm [TS]

00:19:25   everything for its open source for Mac and Linux and Windows [TS]

00:19:30   I'd somebody I think it once reports due to the App Store and a couple of the [TS]

00:19:34   store for probably a GPS [TS]

00:19:35   isolation or something who knows and what you can get this now so like I was [TS]

00:19:39   playing Transport Tycoon again a few years ago I'm a MacBook on the train [TS]

00:19:43   like building up a whole news it was awesome and you know none did you know [TS]

00:19:51   like I believe was transportation if it wasn't transportation is roller coaster [TS]

00:19:54   tycoon you know all that was 99% that was assembly line I don't know that I'll [TS]

00:19:59   tell you my games back in the DA sorry but that's just not my head its [TS]

00:20:04   operating system assembly ya life so I can do to get a good performance out of [TS]

00:20:12   it that stuns me because when I was in when I was in school I like john was a [TS]

00:20:16   computer engineer not a computer scientist and so because of that we had [TS]

00:20:20   to take lunch W courses in one of the ones that I believe is classified as [TS]

00:20:24   doubly was microprocessor I remember exactly was called but it basically was [TS]

00:20:29   writing assembly for Motorola HTC 11 and I i was one of the like six people I [TS]

00:20:35   talk to that actually really really loved their course and I really did [TS]

00:20:40   enjoy writing an assembly but holy crap I would not want to do that at that [TS]

00:20:44   level that just sounds painful I'm really like my assembly choruses and I i [TS]

00:20:50   really got into it and I could see how I would be perfectly happy doing that but [TS]

00:20:53   by the time I was taking a course it was I knew it wasn't you know like if that [TS]

00:20:57   was the mainstream radio program really happened but you know the way it is now [TS]

00:21:02   that's not known as writing entire large programs and assembly anymore you have a [TS]

00:21:06   pearl makes about as much sense but I couldn't help myself I you know and I go [TS]

00:21:14   back a sec Transport Tycoon I have lots of ideas for little little games I would [TS]

00:21:21   make if I knew how to make games and had time to do so and chose to do that with [TS]

00:21:24   that time none of which are true but one of the things that I've always wanted to [TS]

00:21:30   do is take what I love so much about Transport Tycoon is building the train [TS]

00:21:36   networks I don't really care about the other parts of the game I guess I liked [TS]

00:21:39   building these complicated train networks with tracks laid out in such a [TS]

00:21:43   way that the maximum throughput a trans go through [TS]

00:21:45   not at all gummed up and everything and and I think I bet you could extract that [TS]

00:21:51   just that element of it into a simple our game for iOS that's that's modern [TS]

00:21:58   and and just simple and fun and I and i know that there's train yard which is [TS]

00:22:03   not really the same thing although it's very good but that's far as I know that [TS]

00:22:08   doesn't exist yet and I don't really know even with the details of that would [TS]

00:22:11   be like house after that what exactly gameplay will be how it would work out [TS]

00:22:15   imagine to be some kind of puzzle lite game were you know you're trying to sign [TS]

00:22:19   these tracks and put the signals in the right places where they would do the [TS]

00:22:22   right thing and everything but you know all to maximize throughput and minimize [TS]

00:22:27   traffic and once it was you envision that program in your head don't you [TS]

00:22:31   immediately envision the program that you try to solve that game tonight maybe [TS]

00:22:36   just hang out with them and have a second on the game and maximize [TS]

00:22:39   throughput and I think it might be np-complete to solve it but I'm [TS]

00:22:43   imagining but it's one of the more they do the the Automator things like Marion [TS]

00:22:48   games and stuff or try to make an algorithm that will successfully get you [TS]

00:22:53   through the level but they're like limitations you're doing it like it has [TS]

00:22:57   to be real time you can only do it in like the scanning interval so you can't [TS]

00:23:00   really be smart like the the dumbest algorithm that can execute on this this [TS]

00:23:06   limited CPU during the interval between frames that successfully gets you thru [TS]

00:23:10   level that's really nerdy my goodness that's impressive did you ever play [TS]

00:23:17   transport tycoon John do you know what we're talking about now but i dont no [TS]

00:23:20   sign of those Tycoon game but you don't think the fact you don't like the other [TS]

00:23:25   John Kuhn is like railroad tycoon or roller coaster tycoon and it's not and [TS]

00:23:31   it was i think is made but wholly different people it's much more like [TS]

00:23:35   SimCity it's closer links ok I would like this people are into them I see the [TS]

00:23:42   appeal but I like I played them just not my cup of tea and just to the game is it [TS]

00:23:47   is very looks a lot like SimCity and there are a bunch of cities on the map [TS]

00:23:51   but you don't build the city's you you are transportation network and you build [TS]

00:23:56   the trains and the plains and the roads that connect the cities and you get [TS]

00:24:00   business from that and so you spend most of your time like laying out track like [TS]

00:24:05   pipe dreams i cant i dont know I don't know I don't think so you have about a [TS]

00:24:13   bunch of pieces that are all square any and if he's gonna have a straight line [TS]

00:24:16   from top to bottom a straight line from left to right those are the types of [TS]

00:24:18   elbow and you had to lay out the pieces as they came you didn't get the pic and [TS]

00:24:24   chooses like here's the next piece find someplace good for it and then [TS]

00:24:27   eventually water with start flowing in the goal was like to get your pipe set [TS]

00:24:30   up for a really long run if thats right you meet someone let the best about pipe [TS]

00:24:34   dream is that I think at least one possibly multiple games have added [TS]

00:24:40   basically pipe dream as their version of like hacking like when you're in some [TS]

00:24:44   good door lock and they put you into the hacking any game and the hacking many [TS]

00:24:48   games is it's basically a pipe dream you know it's like wires and special effects [TS]

00:24:51   like that but you like this hockey game is quite premature you know that have [TS]

00:24:56   nothing to do with actual hacking and it's not even like they just have to [TS]

00:24:59   have some sort of activity the regular people who don't know anything about [TS]

00:25:03   computers will accept ok yes this is hacking and they used pipe dream but I I [TS]

00:25:07   like five minutes of the game is fun he even had a version of that in the [TS]

00:25:10   seventh guest and yes very it's a very popular like they disguise it as much as [TS]

00:25:15   possible and something that eventually realize wait a second this is this is [TS]

00:25:18   just like pipe dream cleverly disguised so I'm definitely going to release [TS]

00:25:22   hasn't called tech podcast episode be I wonder anybody is going to know what I [TS]

00:25:28   just said about the 7th guest like it if anybody even members what that is they [TS]

00:25:32   will remember when I actually loved eleventh hour do you know what that is I [TS]

00:25:37   do this sequel but I never played this season ever played seven guess who [TS]

00:25:40   incidentally but I really enjoyed eleventh hour as the 7th guest was is [TS]

00:25:45   one of those CD rom games the first he was one of the first CD rom games I [TS]

00:25:50   think [TS]

00:25:51   it certainly there was one of the first ever seen and and it was it was like [TS]

00:25:56   you're in this haunted mansion and you had like solve puzzles it was a big [TS]

00:26:00   puzzle solving game and so is tons of diesel many games and trying to figure [TS]

00:26:05   out that some murder mystery I forget the exact story but it was one of those [TS]

00:26:11   games where like because it was on a CD rom most of the time in the game was [TS]

00:26:15   spent like watching these little FMV sequences visible videos games couldn't [TS]

00:26:20   have videos of know that point there was one of the stories based on cartridges [TS]

00:26:24   so it would waste the whole CD with liked videos and CD audio raw and so you [TS]

00:26:32   spend the whole time like watching video clips and clicking between them and that [TS]

00:26:36   was the game but it did have some pretty hard puzzles it I remember that he would [TS]

00:26:41   because it was right to my memory which is terrible it was right around the time [TS]

00:26:46   you like mister come out as well maybe for the few see any missed but missed [TS]

00:26:50   was way more popular but the seven predated it and I was like missed seem [TS]

00:26:57   so primitive after seeing the 7th guest because it wasn't full motion it was [TS]

00:27:00   like a slide show that between amidst all this paper card video what was it [TS]

00:27:09   was a quick time those tiny video every every move you made would be animated [TS]

00:27:16   the whole way and ends with a date with Miss like if you click to move to go [TS]

00:27:22   into a room ago just clipping to be there right across the ocean video was [TS]

00:27:28   remembered as across there was a plague on on city optical media games because [TS]

00:27:35   there was so many ten-member there was a vampire game with Shannen Doherty and I [TS]

00:27:39   think that was the low point there and there are a whole lot of like the music [TS]

00:27:42   video games are like a criss-cross one for the Sega CD really 07 guess was a [TS]

00:27:50   good game but in general full motion video on CD rom those are all terrible [TS]

00:27:53   especially because like when CD-roms first came out [TS]

00:27:57   yes they could hold video but they couldn't hold or playback very good [TS]

00:28:02   quality video [TS]

00:28:03   so you were seeking and you're sitting there sitting through really low quality [TS]

00:28:08   or really tiny exactly so one of the things one of the other CD games CD-rom [TS]

00:28:16   games I really looked at the time although I think it was a couple years [TS]

00:28:18   later was wing commander three guys ever play that had Mark Hamill in it [TS]

00:28:22   John you must have played this I know what you're talking about I was not a [TS]

00:28:26   wing commander and this is the only one of the series ever played that but I [TS]

00:28:29   really wanted that had a lot of emotion video is split across like four CD roms [TS]

00:28:33   which is unheard of at the time but a couple things about some casting and [TS]

00:28:38   missed firstly John I'm surprised that you aren't in love with missed strictly [TS]

00:28:44   because it was originally done and hyper card I liked it I like that you can keep [TS]

00:28:49   calm and an option did not know that would not like to do so and hyper hyper [TS]

00:28:54   card stack you can I can make little regions that are clickable whatever [TS]

00:28:58   you're developing a high regard to bond over those regions are so you could hold [TS]

00:29:02   down command options are clickable region and earlier versions of miss they [TS]

00:29:09   had not I guess found a way to disable that or whatever so every take the [TS]

00:29:12   mystery out of the game if you can hold down command an option and see what the [TS]

00:29:15   regions where near the mystery and then also real-time follow up because I don't [TS]

00:29:21   want to have it up so that it from Wikipedia missed was commercially [TS]

00:29:24   successful release along with the 7th guest it was widely regarded as a killer [TS]

00:29:28   application that accelerated the sales of CD-rom drives which was first period [TS]

00:29:31   7 cast by a few months and this is this is of course a CEO who whatever my [TS]

00:29:38   friends had but like I saw the 7th guest a few years before a verse on this but [TS]

00:29:43   then again I just cause my friend had it and I guess nobody bought mister a while [TS]

00:29:47   the best part was I remember vividly for these games [TS]

00:29:52   loading them into what do you call it a carousel but it was like a cartridge [TS]

00:29:58   yeah yeah so you put the CD into a taxi and the Caddy into the external CD ROM [TS]

00:30:04   Drive and that's how I played it and my god that was so terrible it was probably [TS]

00:30:08   scuzzy [TS]

00:30:08   it was indeed you're absolutely right before missed were get two games called [TS]

00:30:16   the manhole and cosmic Cosmo which would have been manhole the manhole that [TS]

00:30:21   children were absolutely hundred-percent precursors to missed but they were black [TS]

00:30:28   and white had they did not come on CD rom cosmic also came at like six floppy [TS]

00:30:32   disks 600 K populist but it was the same as a card stack with static screens that [TS]

00:30:38   you could click on to make things happen to solve puzzles much more casual [TS]

00:30:42   puzzles much market-oriented lighter-weight type things all black and [TS]

00:30:46   white graphics but it was the same type deal click from one place mister simply [TS]

00:30:50   640 by 480 3d rendered color version of that plus promotion video but if you [TS]

00:30:56   play those first two games it was a natural progression [TS]

00:30:59   well also apparently was by the same guys who did missed when I heard of [TS]

00:31:03   those guys who was it is a very important very important piece of work [TS]

00:31:09   along with like fools errand in the world in the pantheon of gaming and [TS]

00:31:13   Beckham you think is the game like miss today or do you think everybody would [TS]

00:31:18   just wanted to be a free 3d well but you can move where you wanna know that's [TS]

00:31:23   what the most games are like they want to make them all they did they did [TS]

00:31:26   missed and then I criven was just like missed but like much nicer and better [TS]

00:31:30   than they did the one mystery exile where you could like QuickTime movie are [TS]

00:31:35   you can change your viewpoint look around in real time so it's like you're [TS]

00:31:37   in a series of you know bubbles the time they are things you can look around and [TS]

00:31:43   they say there's a real estate walk-throughs yeah but much nicer and [TS]

00:31:47   motion motion sickness inducing me then they did real miss which is like taking [TS]

00:31:51   missed one now we can do that in real time and then it which was the online [TS]

00:31:56   thing where you could walk around [TS]

00:31:57   and include 3d far past the point of of static screens although I believe [TS]

00:32:02   revenues coming out for the iPad I think they'll actually be a good application [TS]

00:32:06   for people wandering River is the best game if you can only play one of them [TS]

00:32:09   play Rayman even with the stag screens I think on the iPad still work well yeah [TS]

00:32:17   actually that kind of game probably like there's so many game ports that that [TS]

00:32:20   people are jumping onto iOS now because if they think they can make a quick buck [TS]

00:32:23   off the old catalog and the 7th guest that's right now and I actually might [TS]

00:32:30   try that just to see I am sure the game is not nearly as good as I remember a 99 [TS]

00:32:34   ever but like like sega's dumping so much crap on there like there's just so [TS]

00:32:39   many like old console an old PC games are just being dumped on iOS and most of [TS]

00:32:45   them are just terrible because controlling things are so different iOS [TS]

00:32:48   but I imagine a game like mister driven but probably be really random access [TS]

00:32:56   even better than doing with the mouse mouse cursor making things up in new [TS]

00:32:59   random access but they really need to bring his myth and yth wasn't that like [TS]

00:33:05   an RTS withhold with fantasy or yep but it was no resources to begin around you [TS]

00:33:14   have a certain number of points he distributes here whatever you want to [TS]

00:33:16   select that's it no mining no producing new troops know nothing so is the [TS]

00:33:21   tactics game really but it's perfect for the iPad because it was all about you [TS]

00:33:26   know swiping around the battlefield rotating securing selecting multiple [TS]

00:33:30   people you can imagine like tracing your hands around them maybe they have little [TS]

00:33:33   bit difficult because they were formation keys like all the number keys [TS]

00:33:35   were which formation you wanted and then click and drag to align your formation [TS]

00:33:39   but I feel like I'm in a series of gestures you could pull it off and it [TS]

00:33:43   would be awesome I played Miss like crazy and that would be awesome on the [TS]

00:33:46   iPad I definitely feel like these the RTS type games or games that have [TS]

00:33:51   artists like controls are really so far underexplored on on the iPad [TS]

00:33:57   the console [TS]

00:34:00   you don't have a random access to the mouse pointers I was just like it's a [TS]

00:34:03   nightmare it so it's a good on your Mac or PC [TS]

00:34:07   terrible on the console the iPad should be great because you know you have [TS]

00:34:10   random access and you know ten fingers really need to really the iPad profile [TS]

00:34:14   that the morning in July pad 40 to use two hands to to play 3001 you'll come [TS]

00:34:21   out with destiny but at least had all iPads but I would have to carry my full [TS]

00:34:27   tower PC to my friends house to put on a random know you know it also just jumped [TS]

00:34:33   into my head that I used to love playing back in the day was battle chests you [TS]

00:34:36   guys have played that I saw that it was exactly and her 10 year olds and yeah [TS]

00:34:46   they cut the guys had off better than regular chats and it wasn't it wasn't [TS]

00:34:53   even a 320 by 240 is that was built the dividing line between disgusting PC [TS]

00:35:01   games with the pixels breaks and real software that had very few games of that [TS]

00:35:07   era were 640 by 480 syndicated finally PC gaming as well according to the [TS]

00:35:14   screenshot Wikipedia for battle jesse was 320 by 200 but I get the feeling [TS]

00:35:18   this is gonna be shrunk like when I one of my favorite classic games a scorched [TS]

00:35:24   earth to the extent that when I was in college I tried making a scorched-earth [TS]

00:35:29   clone about five different ways and starting over five different times [TS]

00:35:33   that's how I learned erect textile and OpenGL I started even trying out an iOS [TS]

00:35:39   and loves it so much and and and in fact my wife who was then just my girlfriend [TS]

00:35:46   even made me a scorched-earth pillow for one of the various anniversary [TS]

00:35:51   Valentines something or other [TS]

00:35:53   where she likes stitched a scorched-earth screenshot she found that [TS]

00:35:56   she she reproduced it with stitching on a pill it looks awesome yeah I was [TS]

00:36:02   fantastic game and I was happy to see like some game similar to it like that [TS]

00:36:07   tank game whenever I shoot on iOS and the early days but [TS]

00:36:12   that game that was one of the very first into head where I could run at the full [TS]

00:36:18   resolution of my demo video card supported which was 640 by 480 and it [TS]

00:36:22   just looked so much better than my friends crappy 320 by 240 on his little [TS]

00:36:26   bit older PC all those other sharper lines and every everything was so crisp [TS]

00:36:33   on my 640 by 480 screen as well as Mac gamers are lowering overall you be able [TS]

00:36:37   yeah you may have color but nvm sharp sharp black and white graphics card it [TS]

00:36:45   really did make such a difference of the sharpness of the things you could do [TS]

00:36:49   that but that's why games like you know fool's errand or possible this tiny [TS]

00:36:52   sharp graphics are you even things like dark castle where PC gamers when they [TS]

00:36:57   saw dark castle were impressed because it was something they couldn't see on [TS]

00:37:01   their systems even though this is a black in my game that's not turn their [TS]

00:37:04   nose up and threw fascinated by because it was you know didn't exist at all [TS]

00:37:08   anywhere [TS]

00:37:08   nothing had you know 72 dpi screen with tiny little characters with real sound [TS]

00:37:15   thing that PC gamers will be impressed by you know if you didn't have a fancy [TS]

00:37:19   sound Congress had 2 p.m. speaker and whatever you know the maximum out of the [TS]

00:37:24   box 20 kilohertz audio and you know they put like actual clips of sound nice to [TS]

00:37:28   impress PC folks when they came home rather just play like random clips Mike [TS]

00:37:32   Ferris Bueller's Day Off and stuff just plan to me like beep sounds a bit like [TS]

00:37:35   wow [TS]

00:37:35   CD in there is a sound they can make sounds you know it's funny because I [TS]

00:37:43   don't really give a crap about hardware in in terms of the intricacies of this [TS]

00:37:48   cheap here Saturday this processor vs that but back in those days man I [TS]

00:37:53   remember having arguments about what was it like the Sound Blaster 16 vs Blaster [TS]

00:37:58   Pro and like all these stupid terrible arguments that when you're ten years old [TS]

00:38:03   and a complete freakin nerd God you took him so seriously back then [TS]

00:38:09   it was a much rougher world with all the stuff like you would have some games [TS]

00:38:14   just one support your sound card and a bit and even just like the point where [TS]

00:38:19   you went from PC speaker to sound card nobody had Macs are john was a point [TS]

00:38:23   when you went from PC speaker to sound card that was a major upgrade is it [TS]

00:38:27   really did change what your computer could do it radically changed what it [TS]

00:38:32   was like to play games and look to me like I said I got my first computer was [TS]

00:38:38   a 486 without without a sound card and then like I got as an add-on like the [TS]

00:38:44   next christmas I got a package that was a soundblaster that a CD ROM Drive would [TS]

00:38:51   also plug into the motherboard didn't have CTE controllers like I think it was [TS]

00:38:56   at a p/e the interface that they used sound cards would actually come with [TS]

00:39:01   pataki controllers and they would sell the senior on the sound card as a bundle [TS]

00:39:05   so that so like my first Christmas after having my first computer I added to it [TS]

00:39:11   a senior ominous sound card and that was section massive upgrade like I don't [TS]

00:39:16   think there is an upgrade that significant until getting internet [TS]

00:39:20   connectivity like in and how much it change my computer and then getting in [TS]

00:39:24   there wasn't anything really after that until SSDs maybe but what about wi-fi I [TS]

00:39:31   mean did not the same not finding max because you're adding this terrible CD [TS]

00:39:35   ROM Drive in the Sound Blaster card with a computer and a huge upgrade and like [TS]

00:39:39   every Mac able to do that for years and years when you had your 46 and you were [TS]

00:39:44   just ignoring them [TS]

00:39:45   yeah probably often the side there they all had stereo sound that work they call [TS]

00:39:52   you can connect cd-rom drive to all you don't have to buy anything we're just [TS]

00:39:56   there I probably wouldn't like this was I bought this computer in 1994 late 1994 [TS]

00:40:06   and I remember it costs like $2000 with modern printer [TS]

00:40:12   what what what a decently equipment costs in 2004 1994 [TS]

00:40:17   what it costs in 94 right and that that was the problem we couldn't afford it so [TS]

00:40:25   you know i i my gateway two thousand PC that came in the Casbah box for the [TS]

00:40:33   Aussies where'd you get a crappy low cost me with the CD rom and sound card [TS]

00:40:38   is no sound card attorney said there's no they all came they all came with [TS]

00:40:44   sound that worked there's like it's not there's no incompatibility like the very [TS]

00:40:50   first 128 gigabytes of RAM trying to sound just like regular sound you know [TS]

00:40:57   they did they jumped up to CD quality eventually but it's like you would never [TS]

00:41:01   there was never a Mac just believe in but you might be able to remember [TS]

00:41:06   speaking of RAM and this is from our car do you remember doing the dance with [TS]

00:41:10   conventional memory and trying to make sure that you're like auto execs at six [TS]

00:41:15   had had the drivers set up in such a way that you would eke out just barely [TS]

00:41:20   enough conventional memory in order to run whatever game you want to try that [TS]

00:41:23   are my friends house trying to instructions about how to change your [TS]

00:41:27   config does try to get the thing to boot up as like to get one game to work and [TS]

00:41:34   then you've got to be done with this game now because we have another game [TS]

00:41:36   and head screw with the settings and you can't do both of them I had these [TS]

00:41:42   pitching like boot disks and in the auto execs scripts that fall on menu system [TS]

00:41:49   so I had to turn the computer on if you want to play what game you want to play [TS]

00:41:54   with either engage and disengage the mouse and turn on or off your Sound [TS]

00:41:57   Blaster in the South America but god it was after that I I bought my first [TS]

00:42:06   computer like right when that stuff started not matter anymore like it had [TS]

00:42:09   it had eight megs of RAM which at the time was pretty good at it wasn't like a [TS]

00:42:14   workstation level but it was for a home here that was very good and so it was [TS]

00:42:18   like da six point one or 6.2 it was already pretty mature at that point the [TS]

00:42:24   Sound Blaster was really easy to assemble for sixteen I get put on the [TS]

00:42:28   default by our cues and everything in it just works and all the game just [TS]

00:42:30   supports [TS]

00:42:31   sixteens already so like I feel like I i entered that like right after it was all [TS]

00:42:36   those pains in the ass the next time I had such a big pain in the ass and I'm [TS]

00:42:42   gonna put the acronym but it was we were living in Austin Texas at the time [TS]

00:42:47   actually and we were getting we were trying to hook up to our first ISP and [TS]

00:42:53   not only do we have to write the modem command strips whatever that's like 80 [TS]

00:42:57   blah blah but to do so we had to write that but then we had to write the script [TS]

00:43:05   that you would run that the modem and router through whatever the computer [TS]

00:43:09   would run once you connect the ISP customers I can remember the name of the [TS]

00:43:13   script but we had to write that by hand in this was when I S p's like nobody had [TS]

00:43:18   not heard from you was like wait for this and send to college to connect my [TS]

00:43:25   colleges network with my modem [TS]

00:43:28   remember what it was called in my dad night literally spent like two weeks [TS]

00:43:31   trying to figure this thing out and finally we did it was like a whole new [TS]

00:43:35   world without internet access in lab now seeing scripts and complicated well but [TS]

00:43:45   bear in mind I was like 12 at the time we didn't have internet to turn to [TS]

00:43:49   because there was barely internet to begin with and be this was trying to get [TS]

00:43:53   on the fucking internet in first place it was so painful [TS]

00:43:58   remember the name of the modem it's like i I got interested enough in to look up [TS]

00:44:04   like the eighty whatever language made by who was the one who made this is [TS]

00:44:09   where I came up with that originated it doesn't make sense once you understand [TS]

00:44:13   how it works and so you could tweak it to try to get like a little bit more [TS]

00:44:16   performance out of yours emoting transfers you know it just changes tweet [TS]

00:44:19   this primer a little bit seamless travel 500 characters per second I think I get [TS]

00:44:23   more cold air intake and I remember the days like the external USB modems didn't [TS]

00:44:32   you talk about that at one point my focus that was the first modem I [TS]

00:44:36   add because I wasn't I wasn't allowed to really get on the internet for a while [TS]

00:44:40   just form for money reasons for the first time I have is just a hand-me-down [TS]

00:44:44   from out of nowhere got it may be the garbage and her story was 2400 baud and [TS]

00:44:49   it was a tremendous external serial modem and this was probably 1996 it was [TS]

00:44:54   pretty late to have a 2400 baud modem and the only thing I can connect to was [TS]

00:44:59   a local BBS that was free [TS]

00:45:01   there was no internet service from back then so what I eventually got though was [TS]

00:45:05   III eventually somehow negotiated [TS]

00:45:10   I think I think somebody else felt pity on me and had to be down a fourteen four [TS]

00:45:14   modem a little while later works at the time again was ridiculously slow but it [TS]

00:45:18   was a lot better than 2,400 so with that I convinced my my richest friend whose [TS]

00:45:24   dad had an AOL account to give me a screen name on his account so I could [TS]

00:45:31   log on and I would leave call waiting off I mean I would leave call waiting [TS]

00:45:36   enabled and leave the speaker on the modem on constantly which is an 80 [TS]

00:45:40   command you have to modify to do that and I just listened to that shook the [TS]

00:45:45   whole time I'm online just listen to that and I would have to listen to the [TS]

00:45:49   call waiting beep because if the call waiting beep it was either my friend who [TS]

00:45:54   wanted to use the account you could both be logged in or it was somebody calling [TS]

00:45:58   my mom really one phone line so I had to put the modem off pick up the phone and [TS]

00:46:03   asked if I lose all the connections I had to let me download it was in [TS]

00:46:07   progress will be lost have to start over again and I'll be able client would [TS]

00:46:12   freak out cuz it wasn't really accustomed to your modem just being [TS]

00:46:14   turned off all the time and the middle of traffic being used and it was [TS]

00:46:19   terrible and I went straight from that terrible AOL set up to eventually a 30 [TS]

00:46:25   36 modem that was a gift for me and I really appreciated that there are 36 [TS]

00:46:30   million still no service though I still do my friend's account and then after [TS]

00:46:35   about another year that I went right to cable I finally convinced I want to let [TS]

00:46:40   me by my internet service III was working at [TS]

00:46:42   a little hippie food co-op grocery store around 6:15 so I was able to pay the 40 [TS]

00:46:48   bucks a month for the roadrunner service from Time Warner it was the very first [TS]

00:46:52   came on and it was awesome and I went straight from 30360 my friend's account [TS]

00:46:57   to 10 megabit unmonitored awesome everything you never got 56 K [TS]

00:47:03   I skip 28 and 56 K that the two most common ones I I skip 28 and 33 601 2497 [TS]

00:47:13   9614 456 [TS]

00:47:17   see i win 9614 428 30336 and a lot of this I went through every step and I [TS]

00:47:23   remember that we chose the X-two side of the X 226 flex debate but the reason I [TS]

00:47:29   was able to get all this stuff was not because we were particularly flew in but [TS]

00:47:33   because dad worked for IBM so he arguably needed all this crap for work [TS]

00:47:37   and so because of that I got to kind of ride on his coattails in the same time [TS]

00:47:41   writing on Marcos and five hits a few well I knew this car for work I start [TS]

00:47:45   something you know well I still have the 336 get like it was so you know I got [TS]

00:47:52   the key low demand like 98 or 99 one of those and but I was still I still had a [TS]

00:47:58   reason to pull out that old external 3361 robotics modem like once a year [TS]

00:48:03   until like 2005 I like I I held onto it kept needing it for educational like oh [TS]

00:48:09   crap something's broken I can't do something I need this modem to save me [TS]

00:48:13   in some way like that that kept coming up for almost a decade after I had it [TS]

00:48:19   memories were so leave really are probably about the turn into a pumpkin [TS]

00:48:32   or whatever you do when you get really tired anything else [TS]

00:48:39   talking that's getting better and I only had that one glass of silver trim [TS]

00:48:47   Jennifer did not get there was not fruity [TS]

00:48:50   that then that is long since done so I can't even blame it on the booze [TS]

00:48:55   anything else good I actually that was a really good XML tech podcast from what [TS]

00:49:02   to say other than was actually gonna be a podcast I was to loosen my game talk [TS]

00:49:09   to my fans will be disappointed that the whole point john is that if we convince [TS]

00:49:13   you to do any kind of additional tech podcast we can't allow you to prepare [TS]

00:49:17   for it because they know when you get burned out and you and you have to stop [TS]

00:49:20   the video I only saw the tail end of the video I just look through the sunday [TS]

00:49:25   event I just started I joined when they were showing details on the obligatory [TS]

00:49:31   pre-rendered BS become part of the Sony press conference experience i just i i [TS]

00:49:40   really have dealt with these consoles that like [TS]

00:49:43   is is the console business still growing meaningfully gonna be successful [TS]

00:49:48   business wise but all the hardware they're making I would like to buy and [TS]

00:49:52   use and I hope they stay in business to make games are tight I'm not even going [TS]

00:49:56   to even attempt to handicap their business stuff for the hardware I think [TS]

00:50:00   it's still very interesting much more interesting to me than just like making [TS]

00:50:04   a gaming PC [TS]

00:50:05   you know if you look at the optical disk for video business you know i i think [TS]

00:50:10   you know we had the eighty DVD version blu-ray format work sucked and and then [TS]

00:50:15   now we stop the problem with like a lot of people just don't upgrade to Blu ray [TS]

00:50:19   because DVD is good enough for them and they don't really know yet [TS]

00:50:25   and blu-ray is such a pain in the ass call the new menu things they do that [TS]

00:50:28   all the job and so like I i think im looking at that landscape it very well [TS]

00:50:35   might be that blu-ray is the last video disc format know certainly and and and [TS]

00:50:41   if it's not there is only problem one more you know but i think is probably [TS]

00:50:44   the last one you know looking at these consoles I would say there's a good [TS]

00:50:48   chance these might be the last consoles that Microsoft [TS]

00:50:52   johnnie make if they if they'd play their cards are they shouldn't be the [TS]

00:50:57   last console second have optical disc probably you know it was many questions [TS]

00:51:02   about whether the PlayStation 4 would have an optical drive weather is going [TS]

00:51:04   to go down not only but I think we don't know the answer to the times they can't [TS]

00:51:10   go download the games to get a little aggressive actions are too slow so yeah [TS]

00:51:15   I have faith that certainly Microsoft can stay in business with their other [TS]

00:51:19   things funding them and Sony I think though I think they're both pull it out [TS]

00:51:23   any Microsoft will be fine microsoft is fine pumping money into a losing [TS]

00:51:27   division for a long time and an Xbox is finally making money for them now it is [TS]

00:51:32   the turn around sometimes and I i dont know if I'd like turn around if you [TS]

00:51:37   ignore that read it right [TS]

00:51:39   costs are if you dont but the basically came around like it that's that that's [TS]

00:51:43   their one little success story that just biding their own battle but I hope they [TS]

00:51:47   will stamp prices cause I like game consoles and I don't want to go away I i [TS]

00:51:52   do till I it's hard for me to really enjoy them because I haven't really had [TS]

00:51:56   time to enjoy a game console or rather I haven't even played journey seems like I [TS]

00:52:02   haven't haven't chosen to spend my time that way I guess I should go do it now [TS]

00:52:10   miss the game but it takes four hours to get the right that was the problem there [TS]

00:52:18   was there was a day and i IMed you for recommendation there's a day where we're [TS]

00:52:22   at if I decided you know this is before the baby was born and we were bored and [TS]

00:52:27   we're like it was a weekend I guess I can I can justify not working for one [TS]

00:52:31   day and really let's play video games ok and so do games are really happy with [TS]

00:52:37   what we have we have we have all three systems is upstate somewhere to parents [TS]

00:52:41   as I don't know where that we use anymore but I have no desire to play the [TS]

00:52:46   way but we have the 360 and the ps3 and they both have internet connection they [TS]

00:52:50   both have downloadable game stores are let's go what what do you wanna play and [TS]

00:52:54   we we we realized we were totally unqualified even choose a game to to buy [TS]

00:52:58   him play from their stores so [TS]

00:53:01   so you know I am I am I am Syracuse asked you what you get you give me their [TS]

00:53:06   conditions they were mostly pretty good for a gun like well I gotta add more [TS]

00:53:10   credit to my account but I don't want to give some credit cards they keep getting [TS]

00:53:13   hacked so as to find somewhere around that and and then while the ps3 game is [TS]

00:53:19   now let's switch over the Xbox this can take forever and then go through 17 [TS]

00:53:23   system software updates and all these reboots take over the Xbox do pretty [TS]

00:53:27   much the exact same thing going through this offer updates all the reboot then [TS]

00:53:31   going try to buy some games having to add more credit my account that I [TS]

00:53:35   haven't had any credit for to it since 2005 and or whatever and they all these [TS]

00:53:40   all these hoops to jump through these overhead of trying to start playing a [TS]

00:53:44   game and let me down the demo for this before I buy it and it sucks then you [TS]

00:53:49   can't multiple download anything if you do it counts the first download it was [TS]

00:53:53   such a disaster we ended up spending hours trying to play a game and then by [TS]

00:53:59   the time we actually started playing a game which eventually we started what's [TS]

00:54:02   the black and white one [TS]

00:54:04   Linda and that's a really good game we enjoyed it for a while but [TS]

00:54:08   come back and finish yet that was like the perfect game for this for us but it [TS]

00:54:14   took us hours of dicking around with the consoles and they're saying he didn't [TS]

00:54:18   turn on your Mac for a couple of years and you're onto something along the Mac [TS]

00:54:23   App Store what's the Mac App Store all-news 10.6 points [TS]

00:54:27   10680 of that only runs on online so that operate again like if you don't use [TS]

00:54:32   your Mac for years you'd be in for the same crazy upgrade today if you use your [TS]

00:54:36   console frequently the system updates are there more frequent and then last [TS]

00:54:41   ten-point updates but they're not that honors they'd be spread out because he [TS]

00:54:44   be using more frequently used frequently as a media player rights of the people [TS]

00:54:49   who don't actually play games on it except for once in a blue moon just like [TS]

00:54:53   they have all the updates built up for them but if you if you use it for like [TS]

00:54:58   that's not stopping any of my kids with their plan things at least once a week [TS]

00:55:01   and so everything is also always updated fine and I think that's plenty of Wii [TS]

00:55:06   games that you would actually enjoy that I recommend you stay at the week is now [TS]

00:55:11   it's past his prime but you know I mean honestly if I was gonna get back into [TS]

00:55:15   the way I get the Wii U because one of these ahead as much but the Wii was the [TS]

00:55:17   lack of a steel output yeah that's it was past his prime when it was [TS]

00:55:23   introduced in the past we use fun multiplayer gaming where one person that [TS]

00:55:27   the little screen that person's got the big 10 split screen kind of nice yeah I [TS]

00:55:31   I am actually once once my kids old enough to want to play video games I [TS]

00:55:36   imagine my opinion of consoles will change in my usage pattern will change [TS]

00:55:39   but for the next few years until it happens presumably you gotta give us [TS]

00:55:44   console makers and business to get older [TS]

00:55:47   gotta get a couple of years five years before you can do something useful and [TS]

00:55:52   that console makers still standing [TS]

00:55:54   I imagine some geek parents have probably attempted this where you [TS]

00:55:59   attempt to make your kid just be happy with a very large quantity of games for [TS]

00:56:03   an old system that now costs nothing but I would imagine that my kids and my kids [TS]

00:56:10   they do not care he played Nintendo 64 games GameCube games Wii games none of [TS]

00:56:16   those are each day at a time when there are just hideous looking and there is no [TS]

00:56:20   he'd never has never made a peep about again not looking good once in his aid [TS]

00:56:25   that's pretty good yeah maybe I'll try that for the guys still have that modded [TS]

00:56:29   xbox somewhere loaded up with my emulator packs of like every game ever [TS]

00:56:35   made for the Genesis the Super Nintendo the NES and I think even a few for the [TS]

00:56:39   topographic 16 and a few and it could regulate the eyes are getting more I [TS]

00:56:45   didn't try 2d games maybe he would have complained if it had to do they're all [TS]

00:56:49   like Nintendo 64 as far back as I want but look awful cash that was like the [TS]

00:56:54   first things that were three days you know they're not good looking but maybe [TS]

00:57:00   he would have brought it to you I'm not sure what you'll find out trying and [TS]

00:57:03   trying out with the bases but now so many iOS games or 2d and so many kids on [TS]

00:57:08   a plane those yeah but there to do right now [TS]
