582: The Biggest Chunk of the Smallest Chunk

00:00:00   So, from Relay, this is Connected, episode 582. Today's show is brought to you by Ecamm and Sentry.

00:00:13   My name is Mike Hurley, and I had the pleasure of introducing the Ricky Benchman, Federico Vettici.

00:00:18   Hello, Mike. Hi. How are you?

00:00:21   Very good. I think a couple of episodes time, and that old Benchmanship's going to get put on the line.

00:00:28   Yeah, we'll see. We'll see about that. We're also joined by Stephen. Hello, Stephen.

00:00:32   I currently don't have a title. Neither does Mike.

00:00:34   Yeah.

00:00:34   But it's a good opportunity to remind people, next week, we're doing the Annies, where we grade the year month by month on the Tici scale.

00:00:45   And then after that, a couple weeks after that, we have our annual predictions, where we score the 25 predictions and make 26 predictions.

00:00:56   So, lots of fun stuff coming up.

00:00:57   Well, I thought you meant there were 25 predictions. That's a lot of predictions.

00:01:00   Oh, can you imagine if we had decided that? Like, you have to do one prediction per year number? That was fine 12 years ago, but now it's getting out of hand.

00:01:08   I mean, with the Flexi, sometimes we get up there, but...

00:01:11   It's true.

00:01:11   It's true.

00:01:12   I thought you were going to say something different. I thought you were going to say, you know who else doesn't have titles anymore? A whole bunch of people at Apple.

00:01:19   We got it. We're straight into the follow-up. So, since last week's episode, there was a bunch more change. I'm going to try and summarize this the best I can for you, because I had to immerse myself in all of this news for Upgrade this week.

00:01:35   So, Lisa Jackson is retiring. Lisa's full job title was Vice President for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives.

00:01:48   So, she is retiring in January, and they are bringing in Jennifer Newstead from Meta.

00:01:54   Jennifer will begin as a Vice President, and then Kate Adams, who is the current legal counsel, the general counsel, she is going to start transitioning some of her role to Jennifer, who will then...

00:02:10   And then Kate will be retiring late next, late 2026.

00:02:15   And then by that time, Jennifer Newstead will be the full, like, general counsel, and will be taking the government affairs part of Lisa Jackson's role.

00:02:26   The social initiatives and environment will give no leader, and the teams will report into the COO of Sibicon.

00:02:37   Then, there was some news that Johnny Shrooji had told Tim Cook that he was looking to leave, and then that Mark Gurman reported on that.

00:02:48   Then there was a memo that Johnny Shrooji sent to his team, and obviously no one else was supposed to see it, where he's like,

00:02:56   No, I love my job at Apple. I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

00:03:00   I can't tell if you were being sarcastic or not, if no one else was supposed to see it.

00:03:04   Absolutely sarcastic.

00:03:06   Okay, I was going to say, it definitely read, like, something, please leak this, across the top.

00:03:11   Yes, they're only written down so they're leaked. If you don't want it leaked, you just say it, right?

00:03:14   Because then, right, you just say it to people, which you could also do.

00:03:17   You could get all of his team in a room and say it to them.

00:03:19   But no, you write it down so it leaks.

00:03:22   Yeah, the Gurman story on Sibicon is fascinating, because it was only a couple of days between Gurman's reporting,

00:03:30   it was like the end of the week, and then Monday, I think it was Monday, the leak memo came out.

00:03:37   And so I don't know if it's a Gurman time delay, where, like, this had been going on, or he was misinformed or misunderstood, we'll never know.

00:03:48   But it was definitely a very interesting subplot here.

00:03:51   Yeah, I find it really interesting that there are people like John Gruber and others who were like,

00:03:56   Oh, Gurman was wrong?

00:03:57   Yeah.

00:03:58   And I just don't...

00:04:00   So I did have the...

00:04:01   I don't see how you could see anything other than, no, it came out, and now they're trying to, like, get on top of it.

00:04:08   Yeah, unless someone was told by a source that he was... I don't know. It's very strange.

00:04:15   I do think losing the head of your technologies group would be pretty bad.

00:04:23   Like, if Suruji was like, okay, I'm going to go somewhere else.

00:04:27   First of all, I don't know where... I mean, you would go to an AI company or Google, like, someone else making their own chips.

00:04:37   It's kind of a small... The list of companies he could go to is pretty small, I think.

00:04:41   I could start his own thing.

00:04:42   You could start your own thing.

00:04:44   I think it would have been a pretty big blow if he was stepping out the same time all these other people were.

00:04:51   And I'm sure there's dynamics.

00:04:52   Y'all talked about...

00:04:53   But y'all talked about this on Upgrade 593.

00:04:55   One of y'all's best episodes.

00:04:58   Like, Upgrade 593 is an all-timer.

00:05:00   Y'all are talking about this and sort of the struggles Apple has with talent and talent retention and people staying too long.

00:05:08   So people who would be moving up don't have a place to go.

00:05:11   All those things.

00:05:12   And so this is all in the backdrop of, right, that it is reported that Tim Cook is looking towards the door.

00:05:19   John Ternus may be next.

00:05:22   So, like, Suruji and Ternus work, you would assume, closely together.

00:05:25   The head of hardware and the head of Apple Silicon stuff.

00:05:29   So maybe there's dynamics there we don't understand, but very interesting.

00:05:33   Well, it's just like, I'm sure we've all experienced this.

00:05:38   Like, your co-worker becomes your boss?

00:05:40   Yep.

00:05:41   It's like, I don't really want to deal with this new environment that I'm in.

00:05:44   New dynamic.

00:05:44   I've been in this.

00:05:46   Or, like, I've been in a scenario where me and two of my co-workers all went for the same job.

00:05:52   And one of them got it.

00:05:53   And that was, like, a weird vibe.

00:05:55   Yeah.

00:05:55   Right?

00:05:56   Like, because, like, we all wanted this.

00:05:58   And now you're the one.

00:06:00   It's like, these things just get strange.

00:06:01   I tell you, the way we'll find out, right, is if they make Johnny Suruji the CTO.

00:06:06   Yeah.

00:06:06   If they make Johnny Suruji the CTO, then German was right.

00:06:09   Because if they do that, then Apple has created a role that didn't exist, which is exactly what they did for Johnny Ive.

00:06:17   And, like, they would give it to Suruji.

00:06:19   Yeah.

00:06:20   It'd be interesting to see.

00:06:21   And y'all did mention on Upgrade, like, has Apple had a CTO before?

00:06:28   Yeah.

00:06:29   And they did.

00:06:30   They had a CTO way back in the late 90s.

00:06:38   And that CTO whose name I'm trying to Google and I can't find it, maybe the chat room or maybe the Discord can help me out.

00:06:42   But only you're the one, Stephen.

00:06:44   I'm the only one.

00:06:46   Oh, Ellen Hancock.

00:06:47   I remembered it.

00:06:47   She was the CTO, and she was part of that process about, hey, are we going to buy BOS?

00:06:55   Are we going to buy Next Step?

00:06:57   What are we going to do?

00:06:58   And then she didn't keep her job very long after the new leadership came in.

00:07:04   But it is a position with some history at Apple.

00:07:07   And, look, I think Suruji is one of those people, even though the original sin of making Johnny Ive the chief design officer, even though that is a hangover that we're still feeling today, I think a company like Apple, a CTO, is not a position that is unusual or out of step.

00:07:28   I mean, my thing was always that Johnny should have always been the chief design officer.

00:07:32   They shouldn't have used it as a thing to try and keep him.

00:07:35   And I think that it is very fine to say that Suruji would be a good candidate for a CTO.

00:07:41   Yeah.

00:07:42   Although, I mean, this is one of those things of, like, what is the role of a CTO?

00:07:46   I don't know, realistically.

00:07:48   I feel like it's maybe one of those roles that is flexible depending on the company.

00:07:51   And then your argument is, well, what about Craig?

00:07:54   Yeah.

00:07:55   Right?

00:07:57   Yeah.

00:07:57   Because they're both senior vice presidents, software engineering and hardware technologies.

00:08:01   And then Jernus is hardware engineering.

00:08:03   And so you also have the thing where, like, right now you have two hardware SVPs, but only one software SVP.

00:08:10   That's interesting.

00:08:13   You know, it's kind of an imbalance.

00:08:16   So, yeah, I don't know.

00:08:16   But I'm glad he's staying.

00:08:18   I would definitely be a little concerned if he was stepping out.

00:08:23   Again, not that there's not good people in the organization below him that could totally lead it.

00:08:27   I'm not saying that.

00:08:27   But I think all the hand-wringing over the last couple of weeks would have been dialed up even further if Suruji was out the door.

00:08:38   I still think it is a fascinating choice of words to say, I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

00:08:46   I don't think that's the best sentence to use.

00:08:51   Yeah.

00:08:51   Like, why soon?

00:08:53   Why do you have to put soon?

00:08:54   Why that qualifier?

00:08:56   I mean...

00:08:57   So you do plan on leaving?

00:08:58   Yeah.

00:08:59   I don't know.

00:09:01   I mean, he is 61, according to Wikipedia.

00:09:08   So even if it's not soon, say you want to retire at 65, like that's four years.

00:09:13   I mean, I don't know.

00:09:15   Four years soon?

00:09:16   Doesn't feel like it.

00:09:17   I don't know.

00:09:18   Yep.

00:09:19   Anyways.

00:09:21   Mike, tell us about Alan Dye.

00:09:24   I don't want to.

00:09:25   Okay, well, you can skip it.

00:09:26   No, it's okay.

00:09:27   I agree.

00:09:28   I agree, actually.

00:09:29   Can we just not?

00:09:32   I don't want to talk about it anymore.

00:09:34   Okay.

00:09:35   I'll just read it and we'll move on.

00:09:37   Okay.

00:09:37   Listener Rick wrote in, calling Alan Dye just a packaging guy is bonkers when his work at

00:09:44   Apple has always been copied globally for all packaging.

00:09:47   Okay, Rick.

00:09:47   There's a little bit of an overstatement here.

00:09:50   Like, some companies have copied Apple, but definitely not globally for all packaging.

00:09:56   Are we talking about boxes right now?

00:09:58   We're talking about boxes.

00:09:59   Okay.

00:10:01   Okay.

00:10:02   Anything that's remotely a tech product or a luxury product has packaging that takes so many cues from Apple.

00:10:08   I mean, I wanted to read this because I like the sentiment behind it.

00:10:15   Like, you can start someplace and evolve somewhere else.

00:10:18   I'm not sure Alan Dye did a great job of that.

00:10:20   Hard to say.

00:10:21   But at the same time, like, it's a little overblown that everyone in the world looks at Apple and has copied them.

00:10:27   Yes, some brands have, but other brands have interesting packaging ideas too.

00:10:31   For the boxes.

00:10:31   For the boxes.

00:10:32   For the boxes.

00:10:34   So, iOS 26 is going out to the world now.

00:10:38   It is.

00:10:38   Like, people are getting it now.

00:10:40   And so, today, I spent a few minutes looking at the Apple topic on threads.

00:10:45   Boys.

00:10:47   People freaking out.

00:10:48   The people are mad.

00:10:49   The people are mad.

00:10:50   On threads, which obviously they're mad.

00:10:51   I mean, that's engagement bait.

00:10:53   Maybe they're mad because they're using threads.

00:10:56   Have you thought about that?

00:10:57   That could also be a thing.

00:10:58   That could also be a thing.

00:10:59   But, yeah, the people are upset.

00:11:03   But I also think everybody is upset at first.

00:11:07   And then it's like, oh, you know what?

00:11:08   This is actually pretty nice.

00:11:09   I think that's the way it has gone for a lot of people.

00:11:13   And so, we'll see what the people think.

00:11:16   Yeah.

00:11:16   My 15-year-old daughter, her phone prompted her to install 26.

00:11:23   And she'd been putting it off.

00:11:25   And I just want to recount a text thread with her.

00:11:29   Then we can move on.

00:11:30   Yeah.

00:11:31   It made me update my phone.

00:11:33   It's so glitchy and ugly.

00:11:34   I detest it.

00:11:35   Okay.

00:11:36   I have faith that she's going to come around, by the way.

00:11:40   Yeah.

00:11:40   We'll see.

00:11:40   And then I said, the guy who designed it just quit Apple and is going to meta.

00:11:44   She said, whoa.

00:11:46   Surprise, surprise.

00:11:47   You're infecting your children.

00:11:52   I like Liquid Glass.

00:11:54   With your own views.

00:11:55   I know.

00:11:55   But, like, the meta thing.

00:11:56   Anyway.

00:11:57   But, like, does she know that she can do good tinting of her icons?

00:12:02   I feel like that could.

00:12:03   I need to.

00:12:04   I need to.

00:12:04   You need to show her that.

00:12:05   Yeah.

00:12:06   Because I think that could turn it all around.

00:12:07   Yeah.

00:12:08   People like to do that.

00:12:10   It could be.

00:12:11   But, yes.

00:12:11   26 is going out.

00:12:13   And so, I think we will know in the next few weeks how the public more generally feels about it.

00:12:19   Okay.

00:12:21   Can we have a palate cleanser?

00:12:22   Oh, yeah.

00:12:24   Tiny heads.

00:12:25   Ah.

00:12:26   Yes.

00:12:27   It's back on sale.

00:12:29   So refreshing.

00:12:30   Three people get ready to buy it.

00:12:32   No, it's not.

00:12:33   It's not on sale.

00:12:34   I'm logging into Cotton Bureau.

00:12:35   You can do it if you want to.

00:12:37   I'm wearing mine today.

00:12:37   It's a good T-shirt.

00:12:38   But nobody will buy it.

00:12:40   So this is from the Apple newsroom in the UK.

00:12:44   So Battersea, right?

00:12:46   We've talked about it.

00:12:47   Y'all have been there.

00:12:48   I really want to see it next time I'm in London.

00:12:51   Apple is projecting illustrations on the two, like, or two of, like, the stacks or the towers on the building.

00:13:00   Mm-hmm.

00:13:01   This is a, was a public creativity competition for illustrators on the iPad called Your Tree on Battersea.

00:13:09   Great name.

00:13:11   Really great.

00:13:12   This is really cool.

00:13:13   So they had 24 winning public submissions, and those are animated and, again, projected on the building.

00:13:21   Go check out the link in the show notes.

00:13:23   This is really, really cool.

00:13:25   Yeah.

00:13:26   They did this last year.

00:13:27   I don't know if it was the first year that they did it, but I remember that they did it last year.

00:13:31   Yeah.

00:13:31   But it wasn't public last year.

00:13:33   Yeah.

00:13:33   I was going to say, I don't remember if it was a public thing.

00:13:36   This was sent to us because one of the illustrations has a bunch of people with tiny heads drawn by Matt Joyce, and it's in the very 2023 Sass colors.

00:13:50   So it's, like, blue and magenta and pink and yellow.

00:13:53   It's a lot of fun.

00:13:55   But this is super cool, and I would love to see it because I think it's pretty, I would imagine it's pretty compelling in person.

00:14:03   Yeah, they've done a bunch of stuff on the towers, like they did.

00:14:06   Oh, yeah.

00:14:07   Okay.

00:14:08   So they did a tree thing with David Hockney in 2023, and then last year they did Wallace and Gromit projections on the towers.

00:14:17   I think it's awesome.

00:14:18   I love it.

00:14:19   Like, let's turn this beautiful building into artwork.

00:14:22   Super cool.

00:14:22   This episode of Connected is brought to you by Ecamm.

00:14:28   If you're a macOS user who creates videos or podcasts, you need Ecamm.

00:14:33   Ecamm Live is the all-in-one studio built exclusively for the Mac, so it looks, feels, and performs like a native pro app should.

00:14:42   So whether you're live streaming, recording a podcast, or producing training videos, Ecamm gives you broadcast-level control with drag-and-drop simplicity.

00:14:52   Switch cameras, show your screen, cue overlays, control audio, all without ever leaving your Mac.

00:15:00   One of my favorite things about Ecamm is how it's so integrated with the other parts of macOS.

00:15:06   The Mac is a great multimedia platform, yet a lot of apps that do video recording, live streaming stuff, don't really integrate with things nicely.

00:15:16   And Ecamm Live really does.

00:15:18   It's built by people who care about the Mac.

00:15:20   And with Ecamm, you can brand your show in a bunch of different ways.

00:15:23   Titles, graphics, lower thirds.

00:15:25   You can pull in guests for an interview, record multitrack audio for perfect post-production.

00:15:31   And if you're into automation like I am, Ecamm works beautifully with tools like the Stream Deck and Loopback, as well as many other tools you already know and love.

00:15:41   And you can upgrade to Pro and unlock Ecamm for Zoom.

00:15:45   This is super awesome.

00:15:47   You can feed your polished setup straight into Zoom for a meeting or a webinar.

00:15:51   Everything looks really professional.

00:15:52   You can share Zoom comments on the screen.

00:15:55   And you can even capture each participant's audio and video separately for easy post-production work.

00:16:02   To get one month free, go to ecamm.com slash connected and use the code connected.

00:16:08   That's one month of Ecamm Live for free at Ecamm, E-C-A-M-M, ecamm.com slash connected.

00:16:18   Okay, guys, I'm bringing a topic to the show today that I am feeling really conflicted about.

00:16:27   Love it.

00:16:28   Mostly because have you ever used a piece of software and you're like, I like everything that these folks are doing, but I know that they are doomed.

00:16:41   And so like you appreciate something and you know it's going to end.

00:16:45   And like it's a bittersweet feeling, right?

00:16:48   So the kind of topic that I'm bringing to the show today is that I spent a couple of days optimizing my audio setup.

00:16:58   It's been a while since I tried new headphones, new gear.

00:17:01   And in the process, I tried Tidal, the music streaming service.

00:17:05   Wow.

00:17:06   And what if I told you the title is pretty good right now and they're doing interesting work and they're absolutely going to fail and it's kind of sad to watch.

00:17:17   So this all started because of my constant sense of dread and creepiness and just feeling gross whenever I use Spotify.

00:17:25   And I'm also very conflicted about that because all of my friends are using Spotify and Spotify's discovery and discovery engine continues to be the best one that I've ever tried.

00:17:40   I consistently discover new and interesting bands that I can then recommend to people and those people go to their concerts and they tell me, oh, you recommended this that you discovered on Spotify.

00:17:51   And I went to see them live and they're incredible.

00:17:53   I have tried all of the discovery features of Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, you know, Tidal in this case.

00:18:01   Spotify continues to have the best algorithm, but everything about Spotify is creepy and kind of gross.

00:18:08   And they're the service that pays artists the less money compared to other music streaming services.

00:18:14   And this all started because I read this article, this report where Tidal was actually the music streaming service that was paying artists the most.

00:18:22   Like they were giving them the most money compared to all other streaming services.

00:18:27   But like the most of the least probably, right?

00:18:31   Exactly.

00:18:32   Isn't that the problem?

00:18:32   So that's the problem.

00:18:34   Like they're paying them the biggest chunk of the smallest chunk.

00:18:38   It's like everything that you're doing on principle, like you have good principles.

00:18:48   Really great principles.

00:18:49   And those are taking you nowhere.

00:18:51   Like those good principles, like, and I guess, you know, you could apply, philosophically speaking, you could apply this problem to all kinds of issues in everyday life.

00:19:01   Without like, you know, you don't have to want to talk about it as you don't want to, but I'm just saying, can I probe this Spotify problem with you a little bit?

00:19:07   Like, is it, like, is it, like, is it, like, is it, like, is that they pay artists the least?

00:19:11   It's a bunch of issues.

00:19:13   They pay the artists the least.

00:19:16   They are not really doing anything in terms of this AI music sort of topping the charts in Spotify and fake AI singles ended up on artists' profile pages.

00:19:29   Their CEO used to fund, like, war startups or stuff like that.

00:19:37   Yeah, he's not the CEO anymore, right?

00:19:38   I'm not defending this, but I think this is one of the reasons is it became a bit of...

00:19:42   I am very conflicted because I don't like a whole bunch of things that Spotify does.

00:19:46   I don't like the fact that they run ICE ads in the United States personally.

00:19:52   It's a whole bunch of problems, really.

00:19:56   At the same time, they have the best search, they have the best algorithm, there's the social peer pressure of everybody uses Spotify.

00:20:05   They have insane market share in the U.S. and in Europe.

00:20:10   They now have lost less.

00:20:11   And so, you know, that problem when you're stuck between your principles and software that is actually pretty good, but there's a part of you that says,

00:20:21   ah, I am liking this, but it also kind of sucks and makes me feel gross at the same time.

00:20:26   So there's that issue.

00:20:28   Yeah, I mean, honestly, again, I'm not defending it.

00:20:31   I'm just saying, find yourself a technology company today where that isn't the case, you know?

00:20:38   Title maybe, maybe title is the answer.

00:20:41   In Italy, there's an expression that we have.

00:20:44   I don't know if there's an equivalent in English, but when somebody, in this case, you're the somebody, says something that you are in agreement with,

00:20:52   you would say, look, you're breaking an open door.

00:20:54   Like, I am the open door in this case.

00:20:56   Like, I fully agree with you on this.

00:20:58   That is a great, that's a great phrase.

00:21:01   Yeah.

00:21:01   I like that.

00:21:02   I, I know, I know.

00:21:04   Like, find a technology company that isn't even slightly creepy or doing something shady these days.

00:21:11   But in any case, maybe it's the fact that I really, really, really deeply care about music.

00:21:16   And so that's my issue.

00:21:18   In any case, title.

00:21:19   So stay with me here.

00:21:21   Tidal is now owned by Block.

00:21:23   Now, if you recall, Block is the parent company of Square and is operated by Jack Dorsey.

00:21:34   Yes.

00:21:35   Now?

00:21:35   I remember when this happened now.

00:21:37   Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:21:38   Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:21:38   So anyway, Tidal has less than 1% market share in the United States.

00:21:44   And which goes back to the idea of, like, yeah, you're paying the artists the most, but like, of how much money exactly?

00:21:51   You know, it's so funny.

00:21:52   Like, I'm sorry I'm just, I'm derailing you so much.

00:21:55   No, no, no.

00:21:56   It's good.

00:21:57   I'm derailing here to add a link to the show notes.

00:21:59   And it got a Guardian article.

00:22:00   Jack Dorsey's block to lay off a thousand people.

00:22:03   Yep.

00:22:04   Gee.

00:22:04   And it's just like, oh, yeah, look, find the good one.

00:22:08   Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:22:10   And so Tidal went for, I did some research.

00:22:13   Tidal last year or this year, a few months ago, went for several months without updates.

00:22:19   And the word on the street, where by street I mean Reddit communities, is that, like, they fired a bunch of people and they had no engineers left.

00:22:27   And then they rehired some engineers.

00:22:29   And so the updates started again.

00:22:31   In the process, Tidal stopped doing.

00:22:35   So Tidal, you know, they started with the whole Jay-Z thing, like, more than a decade ago.

00:22:40   And now they're not doing that anymore.

00:22:42   And sort of over the years, they sort of sold Tidal, the differentiator, was we have high quality music.

00:22:52   They were using this custom format called MQA instead of the, you know, what the rest of the industry eventually embraced, which was like Flack Files and Dolby Atmos.

00:23:02   Over the past year, Tidal pivoted away from MQA.

00:23:06   So they discontinued their MQA format and they started supporting Flack and Dolby Atmos as well.

00:23:13   Okay.

00:23:13   And they have a pretty good catalog.

00:23:16   They have a, you know, the lossless playback has been rolled, just like Apple Music, into the main regular subscription tier.

00:23:24   So you don't have to pay more if you want to have lossless quality.

00:23:28   They have Tidal Connect, which is pretty much the same thing as Spotify Connect, meaning that you can connect to speakers and compatible accessories instead of using Bluetooth or AirPlay.

00:23:40   Once again, giant ask risk here as part of the layups.

00:23:44   They also discontinued support for TVs, Roku, Plex, and other services that used to be compatible.

00:23:53   But the thing is, the apps are pretty good.

00:23:55   They have the best credits view of all the streaming services that I've seen.

00:24:04   You can go into an album and they have this grid view for all the credits of all the players and performers and engineers for every single track in an album.

00:24:13   It's better than the one that you get in Apple Music.

00:24:15   And it's definitely better than what you get in Spotify.

00:24:18   They have the second best, for my taste, real-time lyrics view.

00:24:23   It's better than Spotify.

00:24:24   Not as good as Apple Music, but it's better than Spotify.

00:24:27   And they're now doing, so now their thing to try and be different is that they have this emerging artist program.

00:24:35   And they have this, like, emerging artist of the week.

00:24:42   A chunk of your subscription, I think, goes to this pool of emerging artists that they highlight and spotlight for you.

00:24:49   They have an algorithmic playlist of emerging artists recommended for you.

00:24:56   They have a new upload feature.

00:25:00   So they're also trying to be a little bit more like Bandcamp, where if you're an indie artist, you can just upload your music to Tidal.

00:25:07   And they have a daily Discovery Mix that is, like, imagine Spotify Discovery Weekly, but not as overwhelming.

00:25:16   It's just, it's like 10 songs every day and that's it.

00:25:19   And it's, like, it's all pretty good.

00:25:23   It's all pretty good.

00:25:24   And I like the idea of this small music startup trying to survive.

00:25:31   But it's also kind of sad at the same time.

00:25:34   Yeah.

00:25:34   They even have an app for Android in the car, which is what I have in my Volvo.

00:25:40   You can install Tidal, just like you can install Spotify from the Google Play Store in the car.

00:25:45   They have a Tidal version for Android, which is also, like, semi-abandoned, seems like.

00:25:53   But in any case, I don't know.

00:25:56   I did this experiment.

00:25:57   They're pretty good.

00:25:59   It's just, you get that feeling that there's, like, I don't know, five people working on it or something.

00:26:05   And I like the principle, the idea of what they're doing.

00:26:09   But I don't think, sadly, that they're going to survive, especially given that they had some pretty massive layoffs at the beginning of the year.

00:26:19   And it doesn't seem like they're making a lot of money.

00:26:21   And so now they're trying to pivot with, you know, this new Emerging Artist program, which is great in theory.

00:26:28   I love the idea.

00:26:29   But it's hard these days.

00:26:32   You know, going up against, you know, Apple, Spotify, and Amazon, just in the U.S.

00:26:37   Like, those are the three services with the biggest market share.

00:26:40   And then you have YouTube.

00:26:41   So, yeah.

00:26:42   Anyway, I...

00:26:44   What you're experiencing is what RDO users experienced in late 2014.

00:26:51   Oh, my gosh.

00:26:52   RDO.

00:26:52   I was one of those people.

00:26:54   I was one of those people.

00:26:55   You know, the other day I was looking for something on my phone and I found a screenshot of Beats Music.

00:27:01   Oh, man.

00:27:02   Like, with the...

00:27:04   Remember the playback thing was a circle?

00:27:06   Yep.

00:27:07   That would be in the middle.

00:27:08   Covering the album artwork, which was an awesome...

00:27:10   Yeah.

00:27:11   Yeah.

00:27:12   In any case, I wanted to shake up my audio listening a little bit.

00:27:19   I feel like I've been stuck in a rut for the past few years.

00:27:22   I haven't really tried new audio gear at all.

00:27:25   So, this week I decided to try a couple of things.

00:27:30   The other one, unfortunately, I thought it was going to be delivered today, but the Amazon guy still hasn't showed up.

00:27:36   So, who knows?

00:27:37   Anyway, I got these wireless earbuds by Bowers & Wilkins.

00:27:43   It's a British brand, Mike.

00:27:45   I don't know if you ever heard of...

00:27:47   B&W.

00:27:47   B&W.

00:27:48   Yeah, B&W.

00:27:49   I got the PI8.

00:27:52   So, these are their in-ear wireless earbuds.

00:27:55   Like, they're take-on AirPods, essentially.

00:27:57   But with a twist.

00:28:00   So, I've been doing some research, and it seems like the hot new accessory for audiophiles who don't want to use cables are these Bluetooth dongles that you plug into a computer or in the USB-C port of your phone.

00:28:15   It never ends with you sickos, does it?

00:28:17   Like, all right, we won't use cables, but we have to use a dongle.

00:28:24   But, so, so, so, it's this tiny, tiny thing.

00:28:28   And there's a bunch of companies making the same thing.

00:28:31   And the thing that I got, the thing that I got is made by Creative.

00:28:37   They call it the BT, I guess that stands for Bluetooth, W6.

00:28:41   But you can get a version made by Sennheiser.

00:28:44   You can get a version made by Fio, which is another audio brand.

00:28:48   They're all the same thing.

00:28:49   The idea being, it's a tiny USB-C dongle, really tiny, that you plug into your iPhone.

00:28:54   And when you do, it takes over the iPhone's Bluetooth connections.

00:28:58   So, it's a Bluetooth dongle.

00:29:01   The problem with the iPhone is that, unlike Android, Apple still uses SBC as the Bluetooth codec.

00:29:07   So, when you're using these wireless earbuds or headphones, you're not really using any lossless codec.

00:29:15   You're using the highly compressed SBC codec that iOS still uses by default.

00:29:21   iOS or macOS, for that matter, they don't support aptX, adaptive, or lossless,

00:29:29   or the latest brand for all of this.

00:29:32   I don't know if you guys have ever heard of it, Snapdragon Sound.

00:29:36   This is their latest name.

00:29:37   This is the chip people?

00:29:39   Okay.

00:29:40   Yeah, it's by Qualcomm.

00:29:41   They now call it Snapdragon Sound.

00:29:43   It's basically aptX, either adaptive, so it changes the quality of the audio based on your connection,

00:29:50   or you can just enable aptX lossless.

00:29:52   And it's a lossless Bluetooth codec that uses a lot of bandwidth.

00:29:57   This tiny dongle lets me use aptX lossless, and it just worked.

00:30:02   So, you put the dongle into your iPhone.

00:30:05   It goes into pairing mode.

00:30:06   Then you put your earbuds, in my case, the PI8, in pairing mode.

00:30:11   They automatically find each other, and I've been able to listen to Tidal and Apple Music with lossless quality and Bluetooth earbuds.

00:30:21   And it's been fantastic.

00:30:23   I gotta tell you, these PI8 earbuds, they're really good.

00:30:27   And now I'm not here to talk about, like, the soundstage and the bass and the mids and the highs and all of that.

00:30:32   But they do sound great.

00:30:35   They do sound better than AirPods 3 when you're just listening to music.

00:30:39   The noise cancellation?

00:30:40   Not as good.

00:30:41   But it's really not as good as the Apple one.

00:30:45   But I don't think I'm going to keep this.

00:30:47   I think I'm going to return this.

00:30:50   I think I'm going to try the BW-PX8S2.

00:30:55   So, these are headphones.

00:30:56   Oh, David Beckham on the website, yeah.

00:30:59   Yes, they have Beckham.

00:31:00   Yeah, they're really stylish.

00:31:02   Also, because David Beckham is wearing them.

00:31:05   So, that helps.

00:31:06   I'm going to try this with this system.

00:31:10   And I will report back.

00:31:13   But in the meantime, I can tell you, these dongles, these tiny Bluetooth dongles, they do work.

00:31:19   And the creative one was like 30 euros for me.

00:31:23   And it finally provides a solution for using Bluetooth.

00:31:27   So, no cable, but still listening to lossless music.

00:31:30   So, all this to say, poor Tidal.

00:31:34   They're doing all the right things.

00:31:36   I'm just not sure how long they're going to survive.

00:31:38   But this new world of Bluetooth dongles, I like it.

00:31:43   And I think I'm going to explore it a bit more.

00:31:46   So, what music service are you going to use then?

00:31:49   I think, not Tidal.

00:31:51   I think over the holidays, I will do some soul-searching here.

00:31:56   Really, really finally make a decision between Spotify and Apple Music.

00:32:00   It's those two, really.

00:32:02   I don't really like Amazon Music.

00:32:04   I don't want to run my own music library again.

00:32:08   And I don't know.

00:32:10   I honestly don't know.

00:32:12   There are many things that I like about Apple Music.

00:32:14   There are, unfortunately, many things that I like about Spotify still.

00:32:19   And so, I don't know.

00:32:21   I don't know.

00:32:24   Zoe recommends Cubos.

00:32:25   No.

00:32:26   Cubos.

00:32:27   Cuboos.

00:32:28   Yeah.

00:32:29   Been there.

00:32:29   Been there.

00:32:30   Done that.

00:32:30   I'm not going to do it again.

00:32:32   Did you ever try Samsung Milk Music?

00:32:35   Wait, you're kidding me.

00:32:37   That's not a thing.

00:32:38   It's not called Milk Music.

00:32:39   Yes, it is.

00:32:40   No, it's not.

00:32:41   No.

00:32:41   No.

00:32:42   Milk Music?

00:32:43   Milk Music.

00:32:44   Why is it called that?

00:32:45   I'm putting it in the Discord right now.

00:32:47   Because they're milking the last sense out of the music.

00:32:52   Oh, okay.

00:32:53   It lasted 13 months.

00:32:56   That's rough.

00:32:57   It's not bad.

00:32:57   That's not bad.

00:32:58   Milk Music.

00:32:59   Milk Music.

00:33:00   It's got to be a translation problem, right?

00:33:03   Milk Music.

00:33:04   Why would you call it Milk?

00:33:06   Yeah, it's like iPhone math.

00:33:08   That's what it is.

00:33:09   Yeah, I don't know why you want your music service to be called Milk.

00:33:13   I mean, I could never deal with it.

00:33:16   You know, it's really...

00:33:17   Yes, you would get sick.

00:33:19   Yeah, it's really terrible to lactose intolerant people.

00:33:23   It's very, very insensitive.

00:33:25   It was a different time back in 2016.

00:33:27   It was.

00:33:27   We were...

00:33:28   A long time ago.

00:33:29   Yeah, we were not respected as people.

00:33:32   Very intolerant of lactose intolerance, you know?

00:33:34   Yes, that's right.

00:33:35   Federico, in like two sentences, what are your issues with Apple Music?

00:33:45   The Discovery, mainly.

00:33:47   The Discovery is not as good as Spotify, and the search is also not as fast or as accurate.

00:33:55   I really like a lot of things about Apple Music.

00:33:58   The app looks really nice.

00:34:00   The lyrics are the best ones.

00:34:01   The fact that they have lyrics translation now has been pretty great.

00:34:06   I've been listening to the new Rosalia album, and it's been fantastic for having translation in the lyrics.

00:34:12   They have the best sound quality.

00:34:14   They have the excellent new feature to pin playlists or Spotify or albums to the top of your library.

00:34:24   And you can have those pins on the home screen as widgets.

00:34:26   That's really good.

00:34:28   But I discover...

00:34:30   I know for a fact that I discover less music when I'm on Apple Music than I do on Spotify.

00:34:35   And so I never stopped wanting to discover new music.

00:34:42   And that's the problem for me is that when I stay on Apple Music for too long, I can feel after a while that I'm bored because I haven't discovered anything really new and exciting in a while.

00:34:59   And I've discovered so much music in the past year of Spotify than in three years of Apple Music, you know, prior combined.

00:35:08   So that's what I don't like.

00:35:10   The issue is I don't get great vibes from Spotify, but...

00:35:18   You also don't get good vibes from Apple Music, but it's a different vibe.

00:35:21   Yeah, yeah, unfortunately, yes.

00:35:24   And also, no, TJ, new music is not terrible.

00:35:29   I strongly, strongly, vehemently disagree.

00:35:33   This episode of the show is brought to you by Sentry.

00:35:38   Broken lines of code, busted API calls, app crashes.

00:35:42   Nobody likes these things.

00:35:45   Nobody wants these things, which is why Sentry exists.

00:35:47   It's the only developer-first app monitoring platform built to give you answers, not just clues.

00:35:55   Sentry gives you tools like error monitoring, distributed tracing, session replays, and two freshly minted tools, AI agent monitoring and structured logs.

00:36:04   These let you get to the root cause of issues faster.

00:36:08   And it's used by millions of developers, including some of the biggest apps like Claude, Disney Plus, and Duolingo.

00:36:14   And here at Relay, we use Sentry to keep an eye on our CMS and our ad inventory system.

00:36:21   So if we have an error somewhere, both I and our freelance developer get a notification, and we can see what's going on.

00:36:29   It's super, super useful for our team.

00:36:32   And Sentry recently launched a new AI agent named Sear, which can automatically generate fixes with over 90% accuracy.

00:36:41   It's like hiring an engineer who already knows your entire code base.

00:36:45   Sear finds the correct root cause 94% of the time and can even provide merge-ready PRs based on that analysis.

00:36:54   So try it free at Sentry.io, that's S-E-N-T-R-Y, Sentry.io, and tell them that Connected sent you.

00:37:03   They have a free developer plan, and listeners of the show can use the code CONNECTED at signup for three months free of their team plan and 150,000 free errors.

00:37:15   That's S-E-N-T-R-Y, Sentry.io, and the code CONNECTED.

00:37:19   The link is in the show notes.

00:37:20   Our thanks to Sentry for the support of the show, and Relay.

00:37:25   So last week there was no news, and I spent over an hour preparing a quiz, so you will now be delivered the quiz.

00:37:37   Welcome back to the Quizzes, the quiz show of in a podcast where I'm Mike Hurley because my Connected co-hosts randomly and by surprise on a variety of varying subjects.

00:37:46   So far in the 2025 Quizzes, Steven has 545 points, and Federico has 355 points, so there's a bit of a gap there, unfortunately.

00:37:57   And today, we're going to be playing a quiz that will get us in the spirit for our picks coming up soon,

00:38:06   because we are going to be playing Whose Annual Rikki Was It Anyway?

00:38:10   So, I have a selection of annual Rikki's that have been predicted over the years,

00:38:18   and I would like you two to tell me whose Rikki was that Rikki.

00:38:23   There will be 20 points per correct answer, with a bonus 10 points if you can guess the year that it was picked in.

00:38:34   As a reminder to you both, for our scoring system now, I both now need you to open an iMessage chat to me,

00:38:41   because you will be texting me your answers.

00:38:43   Okay.

00:38:44   So, I have a bunch of questions. Do you understand? I'm going to read the prediction to you.

00:38:52   You have to both tell me who made that prediction, and if you want to make a guess for the year, you can make a guess.

00:39:02   Okay.

00:39:04   Federico is sending me lots of really lovely messages so far.

00:39:07   Yes.

00:39:07   Are you trying to cheat?

00:39:08   No.

00:39:09   I play fair, you know?

00:39:12   You play fair.

00:39:13   Okay.

00:39:14   Do we have any questions?

00:39:15   No.

00:39:17   Okay.

00:39:18   Stephen is also now sending me honestly threatening messages at this point, so we're going great.

00:39:25   You can read it. You can read it out loud if you want.

00:39:28   He says, I love you and control the bank account.

00:39:31   That's what I said.

00:39:32   Oh, wow.

00:39:32   Yeah.

00:39:33   So, it's rough.

00:39:35   It's rough.

00:39:35   That feels like mixed messages there, if I'm being completely honest.

00:39:39   Yeah.

00:39:40   How many questions are we doing?

00:39:42   I have 11.

00:39:44   Ooh.

00:39:45   Okay.

00:39:46   We'll see how we go.

00:39:48   Question number one.

00:39:52   The iPhone 7S and 7S Plus will look like the 7 and 7 Plus, not this edge-to-edge unicorn

00:40:01   phone that has been rumored.

00:40:05   I also thought it would be fun, maybe, for some of these to, like, think about what the

00:40:11   pick was.

00:40:12   Like, we can talk about that if you want to.

00:40:14   I do have one question.

00:40:16   Yeah.

00:40:16   These are annual picks, right?

00:40:19   These were annual picks, yes.

00:40:21   So, when we give you the year, it is corresponding to, like, the year in which it was picked, right?

00:40:32   So, for example...

00:40:33   No, but, like, we used to record these episodes in December, and we would make picks for the

00:40:38   following year.

00:40:39   Sure, but I think that they would be listed as that year.

00:40:43   So, like, if we said something in 2012, but the pick was for 2013, I'm supposed to give

00:40:50   you 2013.

00:40:50   Actually, looking back in history, we always made these picks in January.

00:40:57   Oh, okay.

00:40:57   Perfect.

00:40:58   All right.

00:40:58   So, like, I'm having a quick scan through.

00:41:01   They've always been done in January.

00:41:02   So, it would be, like, you know, for the ones for this year, the 2025 picks, right?

00:41:09   And we recorded it on January 8th.

00:41:11   But, yeah, they've always been...

00:41:13   Doing a quick scan through, they've always been in January.

00:41:15   Okay.

00:41:17   So, we're going to text you...

00:41:21   So, I'm going to read it again for you, just in case, because we've deviated a bit.

00:41:24   The iPhone 7S and 7S Plus will look like the 7 and 7 Plus, not this edge-to-edge unicorn

00:41:30   phone that has been rumored.

00:41:32   I sent you my answer.

00:41:35   Okay.

00:41:36   There's my answer.

00:41:40   Okay.

00:41:43   This was Steven's pick.

00:41:44   Yeah.

00:41:46   For 2017.

00:41:48   Oh.

00:41:49   I got it.

00:41:50   I got it.

00:41:51   Federico picked both Steven and 2017.

00:41:54   Nice.

00:41:55   I said me in 2016.

00:41:57   Yes.

00:41:59   So, this is an interesting pick.

00:42:01   This pick was deemed correct by us.

00:42:05   Because, I guess...

00:42:07   Right.

00:42:07   So, this is the thing of, like, trying to get into our thinking, right?

00:42:10   Well, and the rules were so different then, right?

00:42:13   Like...

00:42:13   They were.

00:42:13   Oh, yeah.

00:42:14   I've got some trivia about the rules later on.

00:42:16   The 7S and 7S Plus didn't exist, right?

00:42:20   Yeah.

00:42:20   Never.

00:42:22   Is that correct?

00:42:23   Yeah.

00:42:23   It became the...

00:42:24   They went from 7 to 8, but the 8 launched alongside the iPhone 10.

00:42:27   That's right.

00:42:28   And so...

00:42:29   I mean, the edge-to-edge unicorn phone, is that not the 10?

00:42:33   Like, is that...

00:42:34   It does seem...

00:42:36   Yeah, that seems like a misscoring in hindsight.

00:42:38   Well, I guess this is...

00:42:41   It can't get in our heads, you know, who knows how that was.

00:42:45   I will say the reason I thought it was mine is the Frayge edge-to-edge unicorn phone sounds

00:42:50   like me.

00:42:50   That is a very...

00:42:52   I assume that's probably what got Federico to.

00:42:55   That is a very Steven sentence.

00:42:58   Yes.

00:42:58   That's a bananas grading for us.

00:43:01   I don't know what happened there.

00:43:02   All right.

00:43:03   You ready for question number two?

00:43:04   Yes, sir.

00:43:05   A streaming service announced as Apple Video.

00:43:08   Ooh.

00:43:10   A streaming service announced as Apple Video.

00:43:14   Um.

00:43:17   Yeah.

00:43:22   Okay.

00:43:23   I don't feel great about what I've submitted, but...

00:43:26   Okay.

00:43:27   So, Steven, what did you submit?

00:43:29   I submitted that it was you, Mike, in 2018.

00:43:32   Okay.

00:43:33   I said Mike 2020.

00:43:35   You're both wrong.

00:43:40   And I...

00:43:40   Here's the thing.

00:43:42   Here's a question for you both.

00:43:44   I'm going to ask you a question now.

00:43:45   I'm going to get both of your thoughts on it because I did not anticipate the scenario that

00:43:49   I'm in right now.

00:43:50   So, I said that I wanted you to pick who got the correct answer with 10 bonus points if you

00:43:57   guess the year.

00:43:58   If it's a bonus, if it's a bonus, it's dependent on the first part of the answer being correct.

00:44:03   Yeah.

00:44:03   Excellent.

00:44:04   That's how I agree with this.

00:44:07   And because one of you did get the year correct, but you both got the person wrong.

00:44:12   This was Federico in 2018.

00:44:14   Oh, wow.

00:44:16   So, I got the year right.

00:44:17   You got the year right, but you both said me.

00:44:20   Apple Video.

00:44:21   Yeah.

00:44:21   We naturally associate video and entertainment with Mike.

00:44:25   That's right.

00:44:25   So, I just did a quick Google and TV Plus was launched in 2019.

00:44:30   So, this was way ahead of its time.

00:44:32   So, this pick was wrong.

00:44:34   It was deemed as wrong because there was neither a streaming service and it wasn't called Apple

00:44:39   Video.

00:44:39   Okay.

00:44:41   We're not too far away from that name now, realistically.

00:44:44   No.

00:44:45   Which is very funny.

00:44:46   All right.

00:44:47   Question number three.

00:44:48   Apple will name a successor to Steve Dowling, former head of public relations at Apple.

00:44:55   Oh, man.

00:44:56   Yeah.

00:44:58   This is really in the weeds, this one.

00:45:00   Yep.

00:45:01   That's a name I've not thought of in a long time.

00:45:03   That's a meme, right?

00:45:05   It's a name I haven't heard of in years.

00:45:07   Yeah, it's from Star Trek.

00:45:10   Um, who could know?

00:45:13   I mean, somebody knows.

00:45:15   Who did he replace?

00:45:17   Katie Cotton?

00:45:19   Katie Cotton.

00:45:20   That's it.

00:45:21   Yeah.

00:45:21   Okay.

00:45:23   Mine's in.

00:45:23   Okay.

00:45:25   Steven, what did you guess?

00:45:27   I guessed Federico in 2019.

00:45:29   And Federico, what did you guess?

00:45:32   I said Federico in 2021.

00:45:34   You both get 20 points.

00:45:36   This was Federico's, this was Federico's, uh, uh, guess.

00:45:39   Okay.

00:45:40   What year?

00:45:40   It was 2020.

00:45:41   Ooh.

00:45:43   Wasn't he replaced by that person who didn't last very long?

00:45:48   Yes.

00:45:49   And it was, like, years later.

00:45:51   Yeah.

00:45:53   And then, yeah, and then that, and I, I figure there's somebody in that role now.

00:45:57   I don't know.

00:45:57   Yeah.

00:45:57   Was, she was from some other tech company, I think.

00:46:00   HP?

00:46:02   Can I Google who it was?

00:46:05   Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:46:06   Okay.

00:46:06   Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:46:07   All right, who replaced, I remember it being weird, Dowling at Apple.

00:46:12   Uh, let's see.

00:46:15   It was Stella Lowe.

00:46:18   Yep.

00:46:19   Where was she before?

00:46:22   Cisco.

00:46:23   Where was she?

00:46:24   Cisco.

00:46:25   And she was there less than a year.

00:46:28   Yeah.

00:46:29   I'll put that, I'll put that in the show notes if anybody wants to revisit that.

00:46:32   I think everybody's done all the revisiting now.

00:46:36   That's the whole story.

00:46:37   I think that, that's as much revisiting as anyone realistically needs to do.

00:46:41   Yeah.

00:46:41   My Stella Lowe calendar didn't go very far, you know.

00:46:44   Three months.

00:46:46   All right.

00:46:48   So, we have the three questions in.

00:46:52   Stephen's on 40 points.

00:46:54   Federico's on 50 points.

00:46:55   Pick number four.

00:46:57   An iPhone Pro with Apple Pencil support.

00:47:01   Two Apple Pencils.

00:47:03   A standard and a new short one that supports the iPhone and iPad mini.

00:47:07   God.

00:47:08   Wait, what?

00:47:09   What's, what?

00:47:09   Is that English?

00:47:11   An iPhone Pro with Apple Pencil support, comma, two Apple Pencils.

00:47:15   A standard and a new short one that supports the iPhone and iPad mini.

00:47:21   So, I think what this pick is getting at is that the iPhone will be called the iPhone Pro and it will feature Apple Pencil support and that there will also be two Apple Pencils now.

00:47:31   There'll be the standard one for the iPad and then a new shorter one for the iPhone and the iPad mini.

00:47:37   That's wild.

00:47:39   Okay.

00:47:40   Although, I will say, I will say, I have a pick for 26 that does involve the Apple Pencil.

00:47:47   Just going to put that out there.

00:47:49   Okay.

00:47:51   I definitely feel good about who this was.

00:47:56   The question is, when was it?

00:47:58   That is, well, that's the bonus question.

00:48:01   The main question is.

00:48:03   Can you, can you read the details again?

00:48:05   One more time.

00:48:06   I'm sorry.

00:48:06   An iPhone Pro with Apple Pencil support, two Apple Pencils, a standard and a new short one that supports the iPhone and iPad mini.

00:48:14   The iPad mini.

00:48:16   And the iPad mini.

00:48:18   Okay.

00:48:23   My guess is in.

00:48:25   Okay.

00:48:28   Stephen, what was your guess?

00:48:29   That it was you, Mike, in 2018.

00:48:33   Okay.

00:48:33   And Federico, what is yours?

00:48:34   I said that it was you, Mike, in 2022.

00:48:37   You were both correct that it was me, but it was in 2017.

00:48:42   Wow.

00:48:43   And here's your first piece of trivia.

00:48:45   This trivia came from rickies.co.

00:48:48   This pick was so risky that Federico suggested adding a special round to the prediction format.

00:48:55   History was made.

00:48:58   This was the, this was the pick that created the riskies, the risky part of the rickies.

00:49:04   Oh my God.

00:49:05   I don't know what I was doing.

00:49:06   I don't know why I did this.

00:49:08   Wow.

00:49:09   But I did it.

00:49:09   Okay.

00:49:09   This is where it all started.

00:49:11   And I went back and looked.

00:49:13   The bill of rickies was so short at this point.

00:49:17   Oh, I'm sure.

00:49:17   It was so short.

00:49:18   This pick was wrong, obviously.

00:49:22   This did not, this did not happen.

00:49:24   Still is.

00:49:25   Yeah.

00:49:26   Still is wrong.

00:49:27   Question five.

00:49:29   Apple launches at least one iPad model with a new display technology.

00:49:35   Who guessed it and when did they guess it?

00:49:41   That's so generic.

00:49:42   Oh yeah, baby.

00:49:44   A new display technology.

00:49:48   A new display technology.

00:49:48   With at least one iPad.

00:49:49   A new display technology.

00:49:50   In a technology.

00:49:52   It's a different kind of mattress.

00:49:54   All right.

00:49:56   Mine's in.

00:49:57   You got it.

00:49:58   Okay.

00:49:58   Federico.

00:49:58   Okay.

00:49:59   Federico, who did you guess?

00:50:01   I said me in 2022.

00:50:03   And Steven?

00:50:04   I said me in 2020.

00:50:06   That is 20 points for Federico.

00:50:09   This was a 2021 pick.

00:50:13   That was correct.

00:50:14   I guess that's the tandem OLED would have been what?

00:50:18   Nope.

00:50:18   No, XDR.

00:50:19   Yep.

00:50:20   Yeah.

00:50:21   It'd be that.

00:50:22   Tandem OLED was 2024, right?

00:50:25   Yeah, it was last year.

00:50:25   Okay.

00:50:26   Yeah.

00:50:26   Good.

00:50:27   Good.

00:50:27   Good pick, Federico.

00:50:29   Mike, Steven, whoever it was.

00:50:30   Thank you.

00:50:30   Federico.

00:50:31   And both of us.

00:50:32   It could be both of us.

00:50:32   Federico picked it.

00:50:33   And I picked it for this.

00:50:34   And not you for sure, Steven.

00:50:35   Yeah.

00:50:36   Certainly not you.

00:50:36   We know it wasn't you.

00:50:37   100% know it was not you.

00:50:38   Question six.

00:50:41   The new Mac Pro will be smaller.

00:50:43   The new Mac Pro will be smaller, not a cube shape, feature no support for the current MPX modules,

00:50:47   and or will allow some form of expandability outside of Thunderbolt.

00:50:51   It will be available in one color.

00:50:53   Not a cube shape is hilarious.

00:50:57   Not a cube shape.

00:50:57   The new Mac Pro will be smaller, not a cube shape, feature no support for the current MPX modules,

00:51:02   and or will allow for some form of expandability outside of Thunderbolt.

00:51:07   It will be only available in one color.

00:51:10   Okay, I have a follow-up question after we guess.

00:51:12   Okay.

00:51:13   But I remember this pick for a specific reason.

00:51:17   The question is, what year was it?

00:51:19   Okay.

00:51:20   I'm trying to think I remember.

00:51:23   I don't know if I can answer that question for you, but maybe together we can come to an answer.

00:51:28   Can you read it again, please?

00:51:31   Absolutely.

00:51:32   The new Mac Pro will be smaller, not a cube shape, feature no support for the current MPX modules,

00:51:38   and or will allow for some form of expandability outside of Thunderbolt.

00:51:42   It will only be available in one color.

00:51:45   One color is hilarious.

00:51:48   Okay.

00:51:49   Okay.

00:51:50   Okay, Federica?

00:51:52   I said Mike 2020.

00:51:54   I said Mike in 2022.

00:51:56   That was me in 2022.

00:52:00   Yes.

00:52:01   Steven gets 30 points.

00:52:02   Federica gets 20 points.

00:52:04   What was your question, Steven?

00:52:07   Well, so I have a reason I remembered it and the question.

00:52:09   The reason I remembered it and knew it was you is that Federico and I are both cube computer aficionados.

00:52:17   We would never say something.

00:52:18   Couldn't it be a cube?

00:52:19   I think that that was debate, debate the both of you.

00:52:22   Yeah.

00:52:22   But my question is, did you get this right because of the Mac Studio?

00:52:26   What year was the Mac Studio?

00:52:27   No, I got this wrong.

00:52:30   I mean, I wouldn't have gotten it right.

00:52:31   Well, the new Mac Pro, I guess.

00:52:32   This was one of the, I think I had two picks like this where I kind of went just a bit wild to try and make it risky, where I got close.

00:52:40   It wasn't smaller.

00:52:43   It did not feature support for the current MPX modules.

00:52:47   Yeah.

00:52:47   And it allowed for expandability.

00:52:49   No, just with Thunderbolt.

00:52:51   Yeah.

00:52:51   You basically have described the Mac Studio.

00:52:53   Yeah.

00:52:54   Yeah.

00:52:55   You know, that's not how this goes.

00:52:58   That's great.

00:52:58   Pick seven.

00:53:00   No in-person WWDC.

00:53:05   Who picked it and when?

00:53:08   Oh, in-person WWDC.

00:53:11   That does narrow the years, probably.

00:53:13   No in-person WWDC.

00:53:14   Does it?

00:53:15   Maybe.

00:53:17   Okay.

00:53:19   I'm going to say.

00:53:20   Okay.

00:53:23   Federico?

00:53:25   Can I give my answer?

00:53:26   Oh, sorry.

00:53:27   Yes.

00:53:27   You both give me your answers.

00:53:28   Okay.

00:53:29   I said Stephen in 2021.

00:53:30   And Stephen.

00:53:32   I said me in 2022.

00:53:34   This was Stephen in 2021.

00:53:38   That's 30 points for Federico.

00:53:40   20 for Stephen.

00:53:41   Nice.

00:53:42   The thing that I was wondering here is if you would have tricked yourselves into thinking this was a 2020 prediction?

00:53:49   No, because that would have been impossible.

00:53:53   It would have been before COVID.

00:53:54   Yeah.

00:53:55   If we were picking this in January.

00:53:56   Well, technically.

00:53:58   Okay.

00:53:59   I mean.

00:53:59   But it was not a thing.

00:54:00   It was not a thing.

00:54:02   It's not what it became.

00:54:03   Technically.

00:54:04   Yes.

00:54:05   But I just wondered if your brains would kind of like trick yourselves.

00:54:10   I thought about it.

00:54:11   But I thought about it.

00:54:12   I was like, ah, no, that would be the trick.

00:54:14   And the reason I thought 22 was, in hindsight, it felt obvious there wasn't going to be one in 21.

00:54:20   I thought by 22, maybe there could be.

00:54:23   No, it wasn't obvious.

00:54:24   If you go back in time, the way people were talking about it.

00:54:28   It's like, ah, yeah, now we can come back.

00:54:30   And it turns out 2021 was worse than 2020, maybe.

00:54:33   So far, we're at 140 points for Federico and 110 for Steven.

00:54:42   Ooh.

00:54:42   Okay.

00:54:43   So we're going to question number eight.

00:54:45   Time to focus.

00:54:47   Workflow two appears as a system feature or app.

00:54:51   That's so close to what happened.

00:54:56   Workflow two appears as a system feature or app.

00:55:01   Who said it when?

00:55:03   Okay, Federico, what did you say?

00:55:10   I said it was me in 2018.

00:55:12   Steven, what did you say?

00:55:14   I said the same thing.

00:55:15   Federico in 18.

00:55:17   Excellent memory, boys.

00:55:18   It's 30 points each.

00:55:19   Yeah.

00:55:20   Yeah.

00:55:20   I have some more trivia for you here.

00:55:22   Obviously, this pick was correct.

00:55:23   This caused the Bill of Ricci's to be amended with the half points rule.

00:55:28   No half points.

00:55:29   I don't know why.

00:55:30   I can't work out.

00:55:31   Because it wasn't called Workflow.

00:55:32   It was called Shortcuts.

00:55:33   It was called Shortcuts.

00:55:34   But why did we only give you a half point?

00:55:36   You know what I mean?

00:55:37   I guess this was the problem, right?

00:55:38   Yeah.

00:55:39   Maybe Federico demanded a half point.

00:55:41   So we gave it to him and then said no more half points.

00:55:44   This was probably it.

00:55:47   I remember where I was when I learned that Workflow had been purchased.

00:55:51   I was at lunch with some friends at a Mexican place.

00:55:54   And I'm sure it was our group thread was like popping off about it.

00:55:59   I was like, I have to like go write a blog post on my phone.

00:56:01   Please excuse me.

00:56:03   I remember getting like a TechCrunch link or something.

00:56:06   Like maybe that was where I read it.

00:56:07   It was probably Panzerino broke that news, I'm going to assume.

00:56:11   He broke the news.

00:56:12   Yeah.

00:56:12   Yeah.

00:56:12   Question nine.

00:56:14   Apple will launch its own podcast content beyond its existing deal with Oprah.

00:56:22   Wait, no.

00:56:22   Can you read it again, please?

00:56:23   Yeah.

00:56:24   Apple will launch its own podcast content beyond its existing deal with Oprah.

00:56:29   Existing deal.

00:56:31   There was a podcast deal with Oprah.

00:56:34   I mean, there was a deal with Oprah that like made a lot of promises that I don't think were ever delivered on.

00:56:39   Yeah.

00:56:41   Okay, I've answered.

00:56:42   No, no, I have no idea here.

00:56:44   Okay.

00:56:46   Steven, what did you say?

00:56:47   Oh, no, hold on, hold on.

00:56:49   I apologize.

00:56:49   No.

00:56:50   I had not cleared the previous message notification, so I got confused.

00:56:54   I have no idea.

00:56:58   Okay.

00:57:01   That was a long time ago.

00:57:03   Was it?

00:57:05   Attention.

00:57:10   Okay, Federico, I need an answer from you.

00:57:12   Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:57:13   Yeah.

00:57:15   Okay.

00:57:15   Okay, Steven, what did you say?

00:57:17   I said it was Mike in 2016.

00:57:20   And Federico?

00:57:21   I said it was Steven in 23.

00:57:23   It was Steven in 2020.

00:57:26   Ooh.

00:57:28   Okay.

00:57:29   I mean, it's funny because Steven's is very far from that point, and so is Federico, but in the complete opposites from each other, which is fascinating.

00:57:38   Yeah.

00:57:39   This pick was correct, by the way.

00:57:41   Incredible.

00:57:42   And I think it was Apple News today.

00:57:44   Probably.

00:57:45   That's probably right.

00:57:46   Yeah.

00:57:47   Which is still going, by the way.

00:57:48   Is it?

00:57:49   Yeah.

00:57:50   I've been, I started, I'm only on episode one, but I've started plurberous.

00:57:56   Plurberous.

00:57:57   Oh, I thought you were going to say.

00:57:58   Plurberous.

00:58:00   And I thought you were saying, I've started Apple News today and I'm only on episode one.

00:58:05   Guys.

00:58:06   I've gone back.

00:58:07   It's crazy what happened in 2020.

00:58:09   I've got so much to catch up on thousands of episodes.

00:58:13   What happened in 2022?

00:58:15   I can't wait to find out.

00:58:16   Yeah.

00:58:17   We actually started plurberous last night.

00:58:19   We were halfway through the first episode.

00:58:20   Okay.

00:58:21   I've watched only the first episode, but in the preview, like the front part, front matter of the show, it's like, please check out the official podcast.

00:58:30   They're doing a bunch of those.

00:58:32   The For All Mankind one is particularly great.

00:58:34   Yeah.

00:58:35   Okay.

00:58:36   All right.

00:58:38   So we're eight, we're nine down.

00:58:41   There's two left.

00:58:42   Federico's pulling away now, 190 to 140.

00:58:46   That's okay.

00:58:47   The comeback starts now, Federico.

00:58:48   Yeah, I know.

00:58:49   Question 10.

00:58:52   A Mac gets a screen that supports touch and or Apple Pencil input.

00:58:59   Hmm.

00:59:01   Someone was all about the Apple Pencil.

00:59:02   A Mac gets, we're all about the Apple Pencil.

00:59:06   Everybody loves the Apple Pencil.

00:59:07   I don't know where mine is.

00:59:08   A Mac gets a screen that supports touch and or Apple Pencil input.

00:59:16   Hmm.

00:59:16   I wrote a thing.

00:59:19   I'm just stalling for time as I think.

00:59:20   I wrote a thing years ago, I think for Jason, about how the trackpad on the MacBook Pro should take pencil input and I stand by it.

00:59:30   I feel good about who it was.

00:59:32   The years have shot in the dark.

00:59:36   Okay.

00:59:36   I have spent it.

00:59:39   And Steven, what did you go for?

00:59:40   I said Mike in 22.

00:59:41   And Federico?

00:59:43   I said Mike in 21.

00:59:45   It was Mike in 2021.

00:59:47   Oh, nice.

00:59:49   30 points for Federico.

00:59:50   I'm so good at this.

00:59:51   I don't know.

00:59:53   I don't know what's happening to me today.

00:59:54   We found it now, Federico.

00:59:55   Now we're just going to keep doing this for the rest of the year.

00:59:57   I like how we were doing history stuff.

01:00:01   Yeah.

01:00:02   I'm trying to do less of that.

01:00:03   Now you see how the game was leaning in your favor before.

01:00:06   Yeah.

01:00:06   I'm trying to do less of that.

01:00:08   This is our history.

01:00:10   It's true.

01:00:11   Federico is clearly better at our history.

01:00:13   It's true.

01:00:13   This pick was obviously wrong.

01:00:15   And we're back around to this conversation again.

01:00:18   Five years later, it will be.

01:00:21   And then maybe it will be right.

01:00:23   Your final question in this round of the quizzes today is.

01:00:28   Apple will release its biggest iPad ever with a display of at least 16 inches.

01:00:35   It won't be.

01:00:36   Shush.

01:00:38   Shush.

01:00:39   It won't be OLED.

01:00:41   It'll have the front-facing camera on the landscape side and two USB-C ports.

01:00:47   At least it'll be called the iPad Studio.

01:00:51   Okay.

01:00:53   That would be incredible.

01:00:55   All right.

01:00:57   I've submitted my guess.

01:00:58   Yeah.

01:00:59   Okay.

01:01:00   And what was your guess, Steven?

01:01:01   Federico in 23.

01:01:03   Yeah.

01:01:04   I said the same.

01:01:05   And you're both completely correct.

01:01:07   That's 30 points to each of you.

01:01:10   Obviously, this pick was wrong.

01:01:12   Yeah.

01:01:13   Obviously.

01:01:13   You were really on one.

01:01:15   I think you really believed that this was going to happen, too.

01:01:18   Yeah.

01:01:18   I remember you were really focused on a big iPad.

01:01:21   Yeah.

01:01:22   Yeah.

01:01:22   Yeah.

01:01:22   Yeah.

01:01:23   That time was alive with guesses around, like, is the studio brand going to branch out?

01:01:29   Yes.

01:01:29   Could it be something instead of pro?

01:01:32   And nothing yet.

01:01:34   But we'll see.

01:01:35   I still think it could, though.

01:01:36   I think it could, too.

01:01:37   It's a good brand.

01:01:39   I've said before, I think that AirPods Max should be called AirPods Studio.

01:01:43   Yes.

01:01:44   But they should also actually just do something to that product.

01:01:46   And there is a studio display, but that name predates all this stuff.

01:01:50   Yeah.

01:01:51   Okay.

01:01:52   So, at the end of today's quiz, Steven scored 190 points.

01:01:56   Federico scored 250 points.

01:01:59   Nice.

01:01:59   So now, in 2025, Steven has 735, and Federico has 605.

01:02:05   That seems like a much more achievable gap now.

01:02:08   But.

01:02:09   Although, this is probably the last quizzes of the year.

01:02:12   I was going to say.

01:02:12   Maybe this is the year of Luigi.

01:02:16   Maybe 2025 continues.

01:02:18   Yeah.

01:02:18   So, I haven't decided yet.

01:02:19   There might be more quizzes.

01:02:20   We only have one episode left, and it's the annual review.

01:02:23   If you stick to quizzes.

01:02:24   I pulled a near-perfect game.

01:02:26   You did.

01:02:27   No, that was incredible to be a part of.

01:02:28   Very, very good.

01:02:29   Very, very good.

01:02:30   But, I mean, who knows?

01:02:32   Maybe there will be more quizzes.

01:02:33   There are more episodes, so we'll find out.

01:02:36   All right.

01:02:37   Thank you for playing.

01:02:37   Thank you, Mike.

01:02:39   It's nice to have a quizzes where Federico's not angry at me at the end.

01:02:43   Yeah.

01:02:43   That's nice.

01:02:43   Nice, nice.

01:02:44   Very nice.

01:02:45   You know who's also not angry?

01:02:47   It's the end.

01:02:48   Who?

01:02:49   Me.

01:02:50   Because it's the end.

01:02:51   Yeah.

01:02:52   And I'm not angry.

01:02:53   Wait, that means you want it to be the end of the episode?

01:02:55   Yeah.

01:02:56   Pull him out of his misery.

01:02:57   That's right.

01:02:58   Okay.

01:02:58   Fair enough.

01:02:59   Fair enough.

01:02:59   Yes, it is the end of the episode.

01:03:03   Got a bunch of stuff going on, so bear with me for a moment.

01:03:06   We are still running our sale on annual memberships.

01:03:10   Go to giverelay.com.

01:03:13   You get 20% off Connected Pro, which is the longer and ad-free version of the show that we do each and every week.

01:03:19   You also get a bunch of great goodies from Relay.

01:03:21   And it's a great gift.

01:03:23   So if you go to giverelay.com, you can buy it for yourself or send it to your aunt to get it for you as a gift.

01:03:27   Go check that out.

01:03:29   You can leave feedback.

01:03:31   There's a link in the show notes.

01:03:32   Feedback and follow-up is always good.

01:03:33   And again, next week we'll be reviewing the year month by month.

01:03:38   Until then, if you want to find more of us, you can find Mike.

01:03:41   He hosts a bunch of other shows here on Relay.

01:03:44   You can check his work out at Cortex Brand.

01:03:47   Mike, do you want to remind people of the Upgradeys?

01:03:49   Oh, thank you very much.

01:03:51   Yeah.

01:03:51   So in a couple of weeks' time, we're going to be doing the 12th Annual Upgradey Awards.

01:03:57   And we ask for Upgradeys, but also the, what do we call our listeners?

01:04:02   The passionate ones.

01:04:04   Passionate ones.

01:04:05   The passionate ones can also make votes in the Upgradeys too.

01:04:08   So you can go to Upgradeys.vote, and I'll put a link in the show notes too.

01:04:11   Make some nominations in our categories.

01:04:13   You don't have to nominate everything, but maybe some of these, you know, you have a favorite iOS app of the year that you want to be nominated in the Upgradeys.

01:04:22   Well, you can, you can go and make that nomination and it will be put into the consideration and maybe your favorite app will win an Upgradey.

01:04:29   Who could tell?

01:04:29   So go to Upgradeys.vote and you can submit that for us.

01:04:33   Or favorite podcast.

01:04:37   And I will just say, Connected has won runner-up many times.

01:04:44   You know, we've won first place twice and one more first place win we enter the Hall of Fame.

01:04:51   Yep.

01:04:52   That is, I think, solely occupied, oh, occupied by what, ATP and the Flophouse?

01:04:57   Correct.

01:04:59   So, that'd be pretty good company for us.

01:05:02   Yeah, it's not going to happen this year.

01:05:04   I can just tell you that's the case.

01:05:06   What is that?

01:05:07   Because you're going to give it to your rest is history boys?

01:05:09   The rest is history is absolutely going to win.

01:05:12   So it's rigged, is what you're saying.

01:05:13   Yes.

01:05:14   It's absolutely rigged.

01:05:16   Me and Jason make the decisions and we have a favorite.

01:05:20   And I expect that the rest is history wins this year and next year and then it can't win anymore.

01:05:26   So then maybe Connected.

01:05:28   Look out, you can make a big campaign for 2027.

01:05:31   Okay.

01:05:32   For Connected to finally go in the Hall of Fame.

01:05:35   Okay.

01:05:36   But also, you really, you have to petition Jason because I will never allow for, I will never pick one of my own shows to win.

01:05:44   Jason.

01:05:44   So you have to, you have to petition Jason and the listeners.

01:05:48   Jason, please.

01:05:50   It's all I want.

01:05:52   I mean, he's not going to do it this year.

01:05:54   So you're really going to have to wait because we both really enjoyed the rest is history this year.

01:05:58   No, I do too.

01:06:00   You can find Federico at MacStories.net.

01:06:03   Federico, what's going on between now and the end of the year at MacStories?

01:06:07   We have the MacStories Selects Awards that are coming out really soon.

01:06:11   And that's it, really.

01:06:15   Then we're going to take a little bit of a break because we need it.

01:06:18   But we have that coming up and it's going to be a good one.

01:06:20   I think it's my favorite selection in a few years.

01:06:24   And I'm really excited about that.

01:06:25   Oh, is it all done?

01:06:25   All the decisions made?

01:06:27   All done.

01:06:27   Good to go.

01:06:28   John got the awards yesterday.

01:06:30   So we're finalizing everything.

01:06:32   Could Connected win a trophy from you?

01:06:36   No.

01:06:36   No.

01:06:37   No.

01:06:39   I didn't even think about it.

01:06:42   Why are you begging for an award?

01:06:44   He really wants one.

01:06:46   I really just want to be awarded something.

01:06:48   Yeah, okay.

01:06:49   We'll give you something, Dad.

01:06:51   Okay.

01:06:51   Best Stephen.

01:06:52   I mean, clearly.

01:06:55   There you go.

01:06:56   You just won.

01:06:56   Congratulations.

01:06:57   You just won Best Stephen.

01:06:58   Thank you.

01:06:59   I did win the podcast-a-thon.

01:07:02   That counts for a lot.

01:07:04   You can find my writing at 512pixels.net, and I co-host Mac Power users here on Relay each

01:07:09   and every Sunday.

01:07:10   I'd like to thank our sponsors this week, Ecamm and Sentry.

01:07:13   And until next week, say goodbye.

01:07:15   Arrivederci.

01:07:16   Cheerio.

01:07:17   Bye, y'all.
