568: The Rickies (September 2025)

00:00:00   from relay this is connected episode 568 today's show is brought to you by squarespace and

00:00:14   turbulence forecast i am your ricky benchman fedorico with each unit it's my pleasure to be

00:00:18   joined for this big episode today by steven hello steven you're going down buddy i don't know

00:00:26   hey who was that oh we haven't introduced anybody else it was the band the connected band band uh i

00:00:36   would like a welcome to the program mr mike hurley oh it's so good to be here i'm ready i'm bringing

00:00:41   it today i'm like i've decided i'm bringing it today so you're all gonna have to watch out for

00:00:45   that it's a new day we're recording on thursdays yeah it is yeah yeah yeah which i don't know about

00:00:52   y'all totally broke my internal clock i don't know where i am yeah no big time no i had quite a day

00:00:59   plus we're doing connection on thursday i feel like i have no idea where i am yeah um you know

00:01:04   interesting feeling uh we have some follow-up mike you want to take this one because i think you're

00:01:09   so happy well i was initially uh instagram have launched an ipad app but they decided to do it

00:01:15   in the worst way like i don't understand why they even bothered like they've just they've they've made

00:01:20   everyone's so happy that it existed and then they're like yeah how about it just doesn't work

00:01:24   like instagram so the main thing here is they've got an instagram app it's on ipad you can make it lots

00:01:31   of different sizes it's a full app right it's got everything um you know this is it's pretty similar

00:01:37   to the web site and which i expect there's some shared some shared uh links there between the two

00:01:44   things but the the home tab of the instagram for ipad app it has your stories across the top

00:01:52   and then reels

00:01:54   and it's the reels tab it's not your pictures anymore and this is reels like the algorithm reels

00:02:04   it's not just reels from accounts that you follow if you want to see the posts from people you've chosen

00:02:09   to follow then you go to the like friends or following tab and you can see all those posts in

00:02:17   either algorithmic or chronological view but you don't get stories there they've split stories

00:02:23   to be with the reels and then everything else in the friends tab or whatever it's i hate it this is

00:02:30   terrible uh i don't know why they've done this and i well i do know why they've done this i wish they

00:02:37   wouldn't have done this and i am concerned that this is actually a harbinger for the future of

00:02:42   instagram oh yeah and if this is where instagram is going like i could see my personal usage declining

00:02:50   i have no interest in reels and tiktok personally it's just not what i want and if they're gonna add

00:02:57   this friction into using the app with friction for me i could imagine that i would naturally

00:03:04   want to use it less and less like at this point like for me the iphone version of instagram was

00:03:11   better on my ipad than the current version the ipad version of instagram because with ios 26

00:03:17   the iphone apps work great right like they just work great uh i'm pretty sad about this this is this

00:03:25   is a this is a real bummer like i don't i don't understand why this is the right again i keep saying

00:03:31   that i do know why they're doing it i just wish they wouldn't do it you know what yeah so they want

00:03:36   so they want to do tiktok and they figured hey we're launching the app on a new platform let's use it as

00:03:41   a test bed for you know seeing how it actually goes if we get rid of the home page and we just

00:03:47   default to reels not even from people you follow but algorithmic reels and we don't let you see the

00:03:52   stories in the friends view that's that's great like i wouldn't mind if i could see my stories in the

00:03:58   friends view right like i would just open the app tap what i need to tap and just carry on with that

00:04:02   you know what i mean like i just open the app and press the button and i would get used to that over

00:04:05   time and it wouldn't bother me but it's like the fact that they've separated the two things that i want

00:04:10   and put them in different places and if i want to watch people's stories i have to see

00:04:15   just algorithmic nonsense like stuff that it's just like for me again because i don't use these

00:04:22   services it's not good for me right it's like it doesn't give me uh like it's showing me things that

00:04:30   it thinks i might care about right but like it's actually stuff that i wouldn't if that makes sense

00:04:36   like so you're familiar with fan cams that's the thing you guys know what these are i think

00:04:42   they're called fan cams they're like these edits that of someone that you like and they're like edited

00:04:46   in this very specific way like oh yeah yeah so i keep getting those for formula one and i but i

00:04:54   wouldn't watch those you know what so like if i was using reels they would see that i would go past

00:04:59   those quickly man people use social media way too much that's my takeaway and just in a way that is

00:05:05   totally different to oh my god yeah okay so i don't know but i'm pretty bummed about it um

00:05:13   i hope this isn't what they do to the iphone app and i figure i'm just not going to use

00:05:18   the instagram for ipad really i don't think we'll see do you know increasingly as more time passes i

00:05:25   remain convinced that the best social network there is is actually reddit at least you know

00:05:30   it wears its nastiness on its sleeve you know okay you know that you're gonna spend some time on reddit

00:05:38   you're gonna find some useful information but also you know because when you sign up for reddit you

00:05:43   know you're gonna have some absolutely nasty vile people on there and at least they're honest about

00:05:50   it you know like it's always been this way they don't even try to make it better but you know i

00:05:57   honestly think i get more value out of reddit like if i had to say okay let's assume let's assume

00:06:02   that i have 30 minutes to waste all right and i get to choose do i want to waste 30 minutes

00:06:08   on tiktok on instagram on x the everything app or on reddit or youtube and i actually think that

00:06:16   out of those 30 wasted minutes i get a higher value ratio out of reddit than the others i don't know

00:06:26   just my my personal yeah i don't i don't i'm not a fan of reddit like not for like the typical reasons

00:06:34   like i just don't really i'm just i just don't really like it like you know yeah just reddit's

00:06:40   not my deal i i like it for like um information you know yeah that's that's what i mean yeah i mean like

00:06:46   if i google something and a reddit thread comes up i will probably click on that first but i i don't

00:06:51   like browse reddit you know what i mean like i don't have like um like i don't i don't i used

00:06:57   too i used to use narwhal right and i used to like have a few subreddits that i would keep up with

00:07:02   but there's just like most of the subreddits that i was in that they just kind of trend towards like

00:07:07   just like bitterness and nastiness oh yeah man yeah yeah they're so nasty yeah and it's just not what

00:07:14   i'm looking for you know um because these are the people i would unfollow on social media you know

00:07:20   but like i i can't get it you can't really get away from what's i can't believe i'm saying this but

00:07:25   what's nice about it compared to other places is that very so often like you go at least the i don't

00:07:33   know the subreddits i go in um if there's even a even a slight hint of someone being like i'm just

00:07:41   gonna be super upfront about it like they absolutely hate nazis which is not something that you would

00:07:47   think is a an obvious thing some social networks encourage you exactly so at least they got that

00:07:55   going on reddit they they don't like those people at least at least they don't like nazis on reddit

00:08:01   the least they can do you know what a high bar i don't know what a high bar right i mean at least

00:08:07   they got that which is not a given sadly anyway i've had a bunch of people send me the polar loop

00:08:16   um polar is a heart rate monitor company i think um was this the one that you had federico was that a

00:08:23   polar i don't know you tell me it was it actually was um and uh they've made a subscription free

00:08:33   alternative to the whoop band it's coming out later this month it's two hundred dollars um and it does

00:08:40   similar ish kinds of things tracks your activity sleep and heart rate it has eight days battery life

00:08:46   the thing about this though right like this is it people sent me this this is interesting

00:08:50   what is the app experience like so like that because like i'm looking at a screen a couple of

00:08:59   screenshots of their app and it doesn't look as nice to use i would say as as whoop does but i'll be

00:09:07   intrigued to see if people review this i would expect that victoria song at the verge will review

00:09:13   this and it will be keen i'll be keen to get the answers at least um but i'm i'm not sure this well

00:09:19   i have already subscribed to whoop and like the way that whoop works you don't pay them monthly

00:09:23   you pay them annually so i'm in i'm in you know um but yeah it's an interesting thing that's out there

00:09:30   for people uh but i still want apple to do this a couple of like maybe a week or so ago there was

00:09:37   someone on threads who made like a concept of of an apple whoop band yeah i saw again it i saw yeah a

00:09:42   bunch of people like oh mike this is what you want it's like yes wait wait wait wait wait was it concepts

00:09:48   of a band what are you saying what is that what are you saying trump was asked about health care and he

00:09:55   said he had concepts of a plan yeah i'm not as plugged in on it as you i think i think maybe

00:10:01   these references might work with some of if you got that let me know on which switch social network

00:10:08   reddit india no not reddit oh man i could federico i love you but boy i disagree uh but i also agree

00:10:16   that instagram is bad on the ipad i installed it and hated it and i'll never use it steven you

00:10:23   had a post on your vlog uh where you've put your your i don't know flag in the ground for the name

00:10:30   of the folding iphone that's right this is i just wanted to put it out here on the show too it's a

00:10:35   it's a mega ricky is what this is because i'm a year ahead of my time okay iphone ultra

00:10:43   it's the name of the folding pretty decent pretty decent pretty decent pretty decent yeah i think

00:10:51   they're going to put fold in it honestly but i like where you're coming from is this is this is if

00:10:56   it's not going to be that right if it's not going to be folding it's probably this uh or max but that

00:11:02   sounds ridiculous um yeah you never know hey it is september unlike last week when it wasn't september

00:11:11   and i said it was september but now it really is september and september is childhood cancer awareness

00:11:16   and that means that relay for saint jude is back can you feel it can you feel it boys we're back

00:11:26   raising money for saint jude as of this recording we are at eighty thousand dollars for saint jude which

00:11:32   is so amazing you can help grow that number by going to saintjude.org slash relay mike why would

00:11:41   somebody want to do that well they want to be able to give money to saint jude and that is the

00:11:46   place to do it and they can also support the campaign that we've been running so this is the seventh time

00:11:51   that the relay community has come together to support the life-saving work of saint jude children's

00:11:55   research hospital uh over these seven years six years again i don't remember how it works but we've

00:12:02   done it seven times and we've raised four million dollars uh together as a community we raised a million

00:12:06   dollars last year which was absolutely unbelievable and a fantastic way to celebrate relay 10 but we're

00:12:12   asking you again as we will do every year for as long as we possibly can to go to stjude.org slash relay

00:12:18   and donate i want to talk a little bit about something called the transition oncology program at saint jude

00:12:26   the end of treatment is not the end of support the transition oncology program also known as top

00:12:31   which is good because transition oncology program is hard to say this helps prepare families for a

00:12:37   smoother transition from treatment to everyday life top develops a treatment summary to help families and

00:12:43   their local health care providers move forward to help families plan for their child's specific needs

00:12:48   saint jude will screen for possible mental and emotional health concerns find out if the child needs

00:12:53   school or job training support find out if they need health uh finding help help finding health insurance

00:12:59   um help families across health care services and provide education about the child's current and future

00:13:05   health needs this is just part of the comprehensive care provided by saint jude because being like

00:13:11   getting to the point where you're cancer free is not the end of your journey

00:13:14   um and they know this and it's kind of just one of the ways that a saint jude patient is always part of

00:13:21   the saint jude family yeah that transition is really hard we did it with our son who is a pediatric cancer

00:13:27   survivor thanks to saint jude you know we went through that transition and it's it's tough because you have

00:13:33   a lot of questions about what do i tell his doctors in the future what should we be looking out for how do we

00:13:39   manage these things and top is just one part of that making sure that families have what they need

00:13:48   they're equipped with what they need to move forward and i love this program i think it's super important

00:13:54   and y'all it is like one brick in a giant wall of things that saint jude does for families with kids with

00:14:03   cancer and catastrophic disease and not just kids who come to memphis for treatment at saint jude because saint

00:14:09   jude shares their research and their information freely around the world we've gotten several

00:14:15   emails this month already of people in across the u.s and in europe having kids facing cancer

00:14:22   and who weren't treated at saint jude but their care was influenced by saint jude's research and

00:14:28   information and in some cases doctors actually partnering with doctors at saint jude to make sure

00:14:33   they're making the best decisions it's a whole circle of care a complete circle of care with saint jude and

00:14:39   that's why this is important so please go to saint jude.org slash relay and donate you can also sign up

00:14:46   and become a fundraiser and this is a great way to get the fundraising in front of your own communities

00:14:52   your own your own people and uh there's a bunch of uh different incentives and rewards you can uh you can

00:15:00   do but i want to draw your attention specifically this week to the the matching program so a lot of

00:15:06   companies will match their employees donations and there's information about that if you scroll down

00:15:12   that page um and it's a great way for your money to go even further and i can tell you because i have

00:15:19   the data it makes a big difference in campaigns like ours and so if you donate check out that that

00:15:26   information on the page talk to your company and see if they will match your donation it's uh

00:15:30   can be a huge impact for really basically no work so go check that out saint jude.org slash relay

00:15:39   help give them more tomorrows go to saint jude.org slash relay to donate i'll start your own fundraiser

00:17:50   all right is everybody ready can you believe we're making picks again

00:17:57   on a thursday on a thursday that's the weird thing

00:18:01   it's economy

00:18:02   the rickies is a game connected host hey that's us play before apple keynotes and the beginning of a new year

00:18:14   we're trying to predict future events it's made up of three rounds each host makes two regular picks

00:18:21   followed by a risky pick there are two types of rickies today we are playing keynote rickies because

00:18:28   it's september not january the keynote rickies winner is named the keynote chairman and this position is held

00:18:35   until the next keynote host should be introduced at the top of each episode according to their current titles

00:18:41   and you heard something you've been hearing something special since wbdc

00:18:45   uh in the event that a host has both positions

00:18:49   as federico does he won the annual rickies

00:18:53   and he won the last keynote rickies he is the ricky benchman

00:18:57   and uh if he wins this you know this time

00:19:01   he'll continue that and if he doesn't

00:19:03   he won't

00:19:04   after the rickies the hosts play a game called the flexis these two games are separate

00:19:09   but related

00:19:11   please stand for the reading of the rules

00:19:16   each host gets to make two regular picks

00:19:26   hosts can be granted a bonus regular pick for any previously incorrect pick that has now come true

00:19:32   from the last three corresponding games

00:19:34   a previously incorrect pick may be used only once

00:19:38   correct regular picks are awarded one point

00:19:41   the language used for regular picks must be finalized and agreed upon during recording

00:19:46   and no partial points may be awarded

00:19:49   risky picks have a more complex scoring system

00:19:54   each host must make a pick with three supporting details

00:19:59   if you get all three details correct you earn two points

00:20:02   two details correct will earn you one point

00:20:06   if you get one detail correct you earn zero points

00:20:09   and if you get all three details wrong you lose a point

00:20:14   as someone who has been there it is devastating

00:20:17   points are only awarded based on details not the overall pick

00:20:21   picks must have been approved as risky by the two other hosts before the start of the game

00:20:27   so we've been texting furiously over the last week or so

00:20:29   making sure we're all lined up

00:20:31   picks for the keynote rookies cannot be reused by the host who made them for the next keynote

00:20:36   for the keynote rookies the scoring window starts when the live stream begins

00:20:40   and closes when picks are scored

00:20:43   which will be next thursday

00:20:45   any information used in scoring must be publicly verifiable at the time of recording

00:20:51   all hosts are allowed to reuse picks previously made by others

00:20:55   scoring is completed during the recording and cannot be modified once an episode is complete

00:21:00   in the event of a tie dice by p calc must be used in relay mode to pick a winner

00:21:06   in the case of a three-way tie hosts all make their calls at the same time

00:21:11   with flipping continuing until a winner is named

00:21:14   jason snell previously had a lifetime ban on flipping any coins in relation to the rookies

00:21:20   however after graduating coin flip university during the 2024 podcastathon for saint jude

00:21:26   he can now flip a coin under direct supervision

00:21:29   the order of the picks is set by previous performance

00:21:33   the winner of the previous associated game goes first the previous loser goes last

00:21:39   winners will be recognized during the closing ceremonies

00:21:43   past results can be seen at rookies.co and rookies.net

00:21:47   these sites also have pages about managing your own scorekeeping at home

00:21:51   you may be seated

00:21:53   it is september uh which means that steven and i will be uh dueling uh on the 19th of september

00:22:03   the seventh annual podcastathon for saint jude

00:22:06   like the quizzes last week we should put some points uh on the line today

00:22:11   uh i would like to suggest that we take our total points for regular picks and flexies

00:22:20   like so rickies and flexies multiply the final by 10

00:22:24   okay that works for me cool

00:22:27   it's time for round one federico as the benchman you get to go first

00:22:33   okay i'll tell you boys i'm gonna try and play this very strategically because i want to keep my title

00:22:40   so yeah we'll see uh my number one pick is

00:22:45   that didn't last long did it

00:22:47   maybe there's a strategy

00:22:50   i like maybe there is i like to keep it on your toes you know that maybe that's the strategy

00:22:55   um my number one pick is apple introduces a new thin iphone model

00:23:01   so there's gonna be a thin iphone i don't want to i don't want to say what it's gonna be called

00:23:07   will it be called will it be called air will it be called slim who knows i think it's gonna be called

00:23:12   iphone math iphone math remember that that was cool um

00:23:17   greatest iphone name of all time

00:23:18   so yeah i think there's gonna be a thin iphone we'll know it when we see it they're gonna make a big deal

00:23:24   out of the fact that it's thin and it's the thinnest iphone ever made

00:23:27   i will be outside of this pick i will be curious to see if it'll be as thin as an ipod pro i don't think it will

00:23:37   the ipod pro is what 5.1 millimeters thin

00:23:41   5 point yeah

00:23:43   yeah so i don't i think it's gonna be thicker than that

00:23:46   uh but i think it's gonna be appreciably thinner than the current gen 16 pro max for example so that's

00:23:53   gonna be interesting and also it'll be interesting to see how much of a premium you you're gonna pay

00:23:59   for such a thin iphone i think it's gonna be interesting to have that contrast especially

00:24:05   between the the iphone 17 pro and the iphone 17 air like how do you price that i would like to talk

00:24:11   about that specifically later on in today's episode yeah yeah okay um i saw somebody a couple of days

00:24:19   ago using an iphone 6 um on a bus wow that phone looked so thin like it really isn't that much different

00:24:30   it's like a millimeter thinner than an iphone 16 right and let me see where it is it's a 6.9 millimeters

00:24:38   for the iphone 6 but i think part of it it was definitely based on okay so the iphone pro is

00:24:45   eight millimeters so it's quite a significant difference to the iphone pro so like the phone

00:24:49   that i'm using so that that is like just like 25 thinner and also it didn't have this huge camera bump

00:24:57   right so it did make me think about the fact that what is this this phone might feel thinner it's

00:25:08   probably going to feel thinner than it looks the air right because all of the case rumors have that

00:25:14   it still has like a big bar that goes across the top so like you know if you're looking at it maybe

00:25:18   that kind of skews it but when you hold it in your hand it's going to be super thin and light and like

00:25:23   that's kind of the the pull of it but yeah just seeing somebody use an iphone 6 it's like wow we

00:25:29   didn't know what we had the the funniest thing about that is in people were like worked up about the

00:25:35   little camera protrusion on the iphone 6 and 6 plus it's like oh buddy you don't you don't know what's

00:25:42   coming like yeah yeah i mean especially what we may be about to get this is all camera back there

00:25:48   yeah it's gonna be gonna be exciting uh yeah fedega i think you're gonna you're gonna get this um it

00:25:54   is interesting you know samsung beat apple to the punch on this but i don't think that phone has done

00:25:58   anything so we'll see if that's not available better success is it not they just they just showed it

00:26:04   okay yeah no i don't but mostly i think it's gonna be interesting to see if that so they've been

00:26:10   trying to make sense out of this fourth iphone in the lineup forever oh yeah and and maybe this time

00:26:15   around the air will be successful oh no it is it is available now apologies sorry yeah okay before

00:26:20   we get the follow-up it they initially showed it off and gave no information and then it came out

00:26:25   to not much fanfare sorry i i guess what's gonna be interesting is seeing if people actually want

00:26:32   a phone with less battery and worse cameras just because it's thin you know so because i understand

00:26:43   thinness as as part of you know preparation for a foldable but that's a completely separate product

00:26:49   right you're getting a foldable here you're getting a regular iphone that sure it's thinner but also

00:26:56   it's much worse battery and a worse camera and a worse everything really but it's thin

00:27:02   we'll see i guess yeah i want it but not as my main phone you know exactly i'm not i don't i'm not

00:27:08   going to replace my i'm not expecting to replace my pro iphone with the air like that's for sure

00:27:14   you know yeah yeah yeah what i don't know what i'm gonna do i i could do something i could do

00:27:20   something wild yes you i was talking i was talking to uh chance miller the other day about about this

00:27:27   very thing of like man the air would be like really good for content but ultimately i probably want the

00:27:31   features of the pro and he was like yeah i mean maybe i'll just flip-flop i was like oh i can't relate

00:27:37   to that i've never i've never flip-flopped on a phone it's gonna be fascinating to see what you do

00:27:44   um because i'm i am hoping that on the day it comes out will someone will have one yeah um and

00:27:51   it will i think the key will be how how quick will it be until you return to the apple store

00:27:58   you know like how fast will it be until that happens i guess we'll find out yeah we'll see i'm i'm

00:28:05   intrigued by it all right my first round pick apple has a new case option to replace fine woven

00:28:12   so yeah i mean i don't know about that name but i said it on upgrade and jason was like well

00:28:20   fine woven wasn't a good name so oh yeah you know what like they're both bad um i think this was obvious

00:28:26   right like apple replaced their leather cases with a new premium case option which did not perform well

00:28:33   um they didn't do it again so they ended up going last year with only only the silicone which you

00:28:39   definitely know is not what they would prefer they want to have a expensive and more expensive phone

00:28:45   case available for you to buy um so i would expect that the team that has been working a team that i

00:28:51   kind of feel sorry for in a way because i bet it took a lot of time to find a replacement for leather

00:28:57   and now they had to start that process all over again however i will say that team did not do a

00:29:02   good job the first time around sorry to say it but that case was bad um it was bad at basically not

00:29:09   it was bad at many of the things that a case needs to be good at um i will be intrigued to see what this

00:29:16   feels like what the kind of specs of it are um especially like some of the stuff i just don't understand like

00:29:22   some of the the leaks seem to suggest that the camera control area is just a cut out which just

00:29:28   feels like i will be shocked if they do that pretty that'd be pretty sad i mean i would be shocked if

00:29:36   the silicone case has a little piece of sapphire in it but the more expensive case they're like i just

00:29:40   jam your finger in there you know like who's it gonna hurt so yeah it's gonna be interesting there's

00:29:46   going to be more eyes on this case than there would normally be eyes on a case right like that's that's

00:29:51   the problem that this product has nobody really paid that much attention to the apple leather cases year

00:29:57   in and year out right like you knew what it was and you did it fine woven came out people weren't really

00:30:02   paying attention to it until they started getting them and they were weird and and like they were

00:30:06   acting strangely like you know like the they were getting all scuffed and and stuff like that i think

00:30:12   steven's ports were misaligned on his one like it just was didn't really seem to be like a very

00:30:16   complete product so but now you know people are going to be taking keys to this thing as soon as they

00:30:23   open the packaging so plus i'm sorry i'm already going on about this now um it will be they'll be under

00:30:30   under a particular amount of scrutiny because case talk and articles can be written in the time

00:30:36   before the iphones are out and so all of the tech websites and and also the tech podcasts like this one

00:30:43   we're looking for stories during that time right like that week in between and the cases usually arrive

00:30:49   in the week in between so you're kind of like yeah people will be wanting to put these things to the

00:30:55   test and because they need things to talk about so it's going to be fascinating to see what happens

00:31:01   i think they've probably learned their lessons here and i i hope this is good you know the the leaks

00:31:05   about this they're reminiscent of the peak design cases which i really like and so i am hopeful that

00:31:12   they get it right this time but i haven't actually used an apple first party case since the fine woven

00:31:19   thing fell apart i mean there's lots of other good options out there apple has a lot of competition to

00:31:25   get it right uh that they really need to okay my first round pick the iphone pro and pro max have

00:31:33   different camera systems hmm i think i think well i mean uh i mean technically they are always

00:31:43   different because they're two different phones so you could get this point on a technicality yes

00:31:49   a feature is different you know what i'm saying a feature is different between the two my suspicion is

00:31:54   that it's zoom related but we'll see these things have to be said on the podcast because you know if

00:32:01   you're tied with one of us you might try and try and you know weasel your way in yeah saying like well you

00:32:07   you know you know from phone but yes so you think zoom zoom is what you know that'd be my unofficial

00:32:13   guess yeah i found a weird rumor which seemed to suggest there was a rumor that suggested that there

00:32:18   was the possibility of a mechanical aperture in the pro max that you could change the aperture

00:32:23   mechan mechanical okay wow hey maybe that's what camera control is good for actually controlling the

00:32:30   camera they should repurpose camera control for that instead of the weird swipe that nobody uses i have

00:32:36   camera control follow-up i totally forgot so i was setting up a new iphone 16 for a family member

00:32:44   this earlier this week and in like the setup flow there's camera control and there's an option like

00:32:51   in the setup do you want it just to be a button or do you want all the swipey stuff and i think i didn't

00:32:56   take a screenshot but i think it defaulted to just be a simple button which i found really interesting

00:33:02   and this was on ios 18 you know they're not it's a family member i'm not putting them on the beta

00:33:05   that that because they added that at a certain point and i guess they just made that part of

00:33:10   the setup flow but you wouldn't necessarily see that unless you were starting fresh right they're not

00:33:14   gonna they're gonna ask you about that huh that's interesting i was surprised that i mean and who knows

00:33:21   right like the the camera is one of the camera app often has changes very late um i was surprised that

00:33:29   the camera control button continued to work exactly the same in 26 me too honestly i think it's too

00:33:36   complicated and that my mind hasn't changed after a year every once in a while i turn it back on because

00:33:41   i just use it as a button i'm like no this is a mess in here yeah i i only ever use it to open the camera

00:33:49   app i don't take pictures of it because i just don't i don't like the the pressing of the button i don't

00:33:55   think it's it's a very comfortable button to press um so i i use the on-screen camera button but i

00:34:01   do like having a dedicated button to open the camera from literally whatever same same yeah i use it all

00:34:07   the time for that okay that brings us into round two round two uh my round two pick is the pro iphones

00:34:17   have a wider rectangular camera bar on the back uh whereby rectangular i mean we we know what i mean

00:34:26   like it's gonna be wider and longer than the square-ish yeah thing we have now yeah can we say

00:34:34   rectangular ish rectangular ish yes because i mean i just want that in the official record it's not a

00:34:41   rectangular can we say squircle oh round round direct yeah um i think it's gonna like initially

00:34:51   when i saw the leaks months and months ago i thought oh my god that's so ugly it it is actually it's kind

00:34:58   of weird to say that a leaked design has been growing on me i guess we'll see what the official

00:35:04   one looks like but it has been growing on me i think it's like i think i actually gonna like the more

00:35:09   balanced um look i don't know maybe just a fashion thing that more and more phones are doing it now

00:35:15   and my eyes are getting used to it as an idea i don't know it looks good on the pixel phones like

00:35:20   it does this is a design that looks good on the pixel phones it is wild to me in a way for apple to

00:35:26   follow google in hardware design but like yeah google of google set this as like a thing everybody laughed

00:35:33   at it and then over time it's like you know what this actually just looks good like it's like it looks

00:35:37   different it looks modern because all the other phones they're trying their best to to downplay it

00:35:45   right like even though they're making them bigger all the time but it's like no no no it's just one

00:35:50   corner that's like this the rest of the phone it's fine and i think people are gonna dig it like i think

00:35:55   it you know it will pass the rocking test which i'm pretty sure is only a thing youtubers do i don't

00:36:02   know if anyone in real life really please don't please don't write to me please don't you know what

00:36:07   i'm saying i just stop all right not you do you too should you feel so offended by the fact that mike

00:36:12   said that nobody rocks their phone on a table in real life please don't send us an email please don't

00:36:18   please don't um i so i feel like you know it will it will make that part work and i and i think people

00:36:25   might like you know i don't know how it will feel to hold but like it might be like a thing where a

00:36:30   lot of people could rest a finger right there or whatever and it becomes like for many of the reasons

00:36:35   i use a pop socket like the main one is it's not even extending it it's just having something to like

00:36:41   rest my finger against it just gives you a like a nice grip point people might like it for that um i think

00:36:47   it's going to go down well and and it's also going to serve the main purpose which makes every iphone

00:36:53   look like a new one yep thank you i was going to say that because it's going to sound silly but it

00:36:57   gives you an instant way to tell that somebody's using a new iphone and it's a good conversation

00:37:02   starter with people in general like hey is that the new one pro and the air the regular iphone 17

00:37:08   seems to just basically look like the 16 i mean nobody buys that so please don't send me an email about

00:37:14   that also you did last year you did was it last year well yeah i used the plus for a while you

00:37:23   flip-flopped yeah who's the flip-flopper now son yeah no no don't even no don't even try don't even

00:37:29   don't even go there i mean you are the guru of it's true so you know looking at my iphone 16 plus

00:37:38   to make this thing rectangular doesn't even double it in size like it's already past the 50 mark

00:37:44   width wise um but i am excited about this i think it looks really good all right my second round pick

00:37:51   is that the apple watch ultra finally goes to three oh finally wow about time i need a new apple watch

00:38:00   so i will say that there this this pick is not as like basic as it looks on the surface because like i

00:38:07   could have just said the apple watch ultra finally gets a revision but like i'm like no i'm gonna put my

00:38:13   like i'm gonna say it's gonna be the apple watch ultra 3 which is again not like incredibly uh risky

00:38:18   or anything but this you know i could have gone i could have gone more safe than i did uh they

00:38:23   absolutely need to do this uh like how long are we going to do this thing i i do think that it will

00:38:28   be a bit of a change um i think it will probably be more like the series 10 you know um in kind of

00:38:35   like in design like make the screen a little bit bigger flatten out the sides maybe make it thinner would be

00:38:39   nice but who knows if they'll get there i'm also going with a three uh apple announces airpods pro

00:38:50   three so uh it's been a minute since we've had new airpods pro i was thinking about this in this pick

00:38:57   it's kind of amazing how much apple has added to airpods pro 2 over their lifetime like in terms of

00:39:03   features and uh i think they're going to build on that i think unofficially the heart rate sensing

00:39:09   stuff that came in those beats headphones seemed like an obvious win for airpods pro 3 and uh yeah

00:39:15   i think we'll see them next to the iphone i think they want they want it to share the spotlight with

00:39:19   the phone yeah be interesting to see what they actually do here right like heart rate monitoring is

00:39:28   one then there's been like a bunch of weird rumors right like infrared cameras for i don't know what

00:39:33   um will they redesign it will what you know what what else is going to be in the the airpods pro are

00:39:41   they going to make significant changes to the sound profile again like will they add any more modes

00:39:47   right we've got like adaptive mode um stuff like that like i and and the here's what i want actually i'm

00:39:53   going to just say this this is a software thing um the conversational awareness mode i should be

00:39:59   able to turn that off for the music app because i can't sing along to music yes yes so i i would

00:40:07   like the ability to turn that off for the music app or use the power of apple intelligence to understand

00:40:13   that i'm singing along to the music i'm listening to yeah also in the future like three years from now

00:40:19   when they have apple glasses uh i the future that i imagine i'm wearing apple glasses and i'm wearing

00:40:27   also airpods and i don't want the conversation awareness to kick in because the uh the glasses

00:40:33   recognize that i'm talking to my dogs so that's the kind of ai i want to see oh right the glasses see

00:40:40   the dogs exactly like because i'm talking to them i'm like hey like and from what like i think also

00:40:47   jason had this problem i mentioned yeah on upgrade a few months ago like recognize that i'm just talking

00:40:53   to my dogs you don't need to pause because like they're not actually going to talk back to me

00:40:57   unfortunately although i want apple to do some kind of like super high quality like bone conduction or

00:41:03   something you know like the like where it doesn't actually make noise yeah that would be cool in the

00:41:10   glasses not in airpods obviously yeah anyway uh that is uh round two i think

00:41:17   yes uh do we have any bonus round picks no okay well you know what's happening next the ad

00:41:30   this episode of the show is brought to you by turbulence forecast we all check the weather

00:43:02   in the show notes our thanks to turbulence forecast for the support of this show and all of relay

00:43:10   all right federico let's get risky okay so i think i am going to read my risky pick first and then

00:43:19   i'm going to explain the context and why i chose this one so the as we know the the new risky pick format

00:43:25   has an opening statement and three conditions the opening statement is the new iphone 17 pro devices

00:43:32   have additional apple intelligence features

00:43:37   condition number one they have more ram than other iphones and can run on device models faster

00:43:44   number two the 17 pros can run the seven billion version of apple foundation model on device

00:43:52   number three the 17 pros get new image and or camera related ai features so here's what i'm thinking

00:44:05   about here um rumors are suggesting that the the pros and maybe the air as of a leak of today will have 12

00:44:15   gigabytes of ram as opposed to the previous uh eight gigabytes of ram that is on the current generation

00:44:21   iphone models the currently the on-device apple intelligence that you have the model that gets downloaded on

00:44:31   on your iphone 16 or 16 pro today is the 4 billion model small one i believe two-bit quantization they

00:44:43   mentioned last year anyway it's a small and kind of i don't want to say dumb but kind of that it's a very

00:44:49   small and not so intelligent model that can run on your phone that all that only has eight gigabytes of ram

00:44:57   so it can run that model plus also let you use your phone normally um now as as we have seen especially

00:45:05   in android android land for the past 12 years over the past year it seems like 12 gigabytes of ram

00:45:12   is the sweet spot right now if you want to have a better model for on-device ai than the 4 billion apple

00:45:21   apple intelligence one and also get to use your phone with multitasking taking pictures taking 4k videos

00:45:29   the usual stuff so if apple is doing 12 gigabytes of ram on an iphone i could see first of all condition

00:45:37   number one they have more ram than other iphones and can run on device models faster i could see apple say

00:45:42   well apple intelligence we have some big upgrades for apple intelligence on the on the new iphones

00:45:48   first of all it runs faster than your previous phone because i mean uh time to first token token

00:45:54   generation per second like those are all metrics that you can observe on a computer today you can

00:46:00   observe on a phone today and i would imagine that apple would like to say we have better we have the a19

00:46:08   we have more memory your apple intelligence tasks can run faster i was thinking to myself like why

00:46:16   did i even have a grounds to speak on this kind of stuff right because like apple intelligence i just

00:46:21   don't think you're seeing in the conversation but then i thought about johnny sruji down in the lab

00:46:27   he just says stuff you know he just says he's just like out there and he's like my flops and tops are

00:46:32   just like the best yeah i mean believe it and also if you want to be taken seriously in the ai industry

00:46:38   which i think apple one would like to be taken with some amount of seriousness at some point um

00:46:45   you would need to show those metrics right if you are serious about ai and for serious about saying well

00:46:51   our our phones are ai phones also just saying well on these new devices with these new chips and this

00:46:57   more memory we can have a shorter time to first token when you ask a question we can generate more tokens

00:47:03   per second when you're waiting for a response especially and this brings me to my second

00:47:08   condition especially if for the past three months you've been making such a big deal out of the fact

00:47:16   that your third-party developers will be able to tap into on-device foundation models which is what's

00:47:22   happening with ios 26 now so your apple you're making a big deal out of the fact that the third-party

00:47:30   developers can integrate with apple intelligence great and when they do all they get is the small

00:47:36   and kind of bad four billion foundation model that's not i mean obviously that's not ideal right you would

00:47:44   like to have developers use an even better model so i think that there's an opening here for apple to say

00:47:52   on the new iphones uh third-party apps get automatically upgraded to the bigger uh seven

00:48:00   billion version of apple foundation model now why that one uh first of all that is the current version

00:48:06   that runs on private cloud compute oh if if you compare a seven billion model um and you sort of run

00:48:17   some just do some research you can get those kinds of models on android running there's plenty of cases

00:48:23   of those models running on phones with 12 gigabytes of RAM that seems like a i mean i i have no doubt that

00:48:30   you're right but like it seemed like quite a jump to me to be like the private cloud compute model can

00:48:35   now run locally like that that would be quite intense right you would need to be quantized so we need to be

00:48:41   optimized for a phone rather than whatever what do they have a mac studio in the cloud or something i

00:48:47   don't know um but you know i could see apple saying on these new phones we can have a bigger apple

00:48:52   intelligence model which means uh better responses maybe more languages you know that kind of stuff

00:49:00   there was also a rumor a few months ago by mark german that apple was testing uh bigger models in private

00:49:06   cloud compute so i could see apple basically progressively saying over time some models will

00:49:11   graduate to running on device and in the cloud we're gonna progressively move to bigger and bigger models

00:49:17   and condition number three uh i think they have to have some kind of response to the fact that google

00:49:25   and samsung are absolutely running away with the idea that they have ai phones that have serious

00:49:32   artificial intelligence based uh camera and image features so the iphone event is always a an

00:49:40   opportunity for apple to showcase some new photos and camera stuff and i think i mean they do this every

00:49:46   year uh and i think they're gonna have some kind of ai angle here i don't know what it is but i think

00:49:53   it's not i would be surprised if it's just gonna be yeah we have a better lens you're gonna take better

00:49:58   pictures that's it i think they're gonna have something that is about apple intelligence that

00:50:03   is about ai and they're gonna say it as part of the photos or camera segments did you see the google

00:50:11   photos gemini i think where you just like say what you want done to an image yeah does it apple has a

00:50:17   white paper on it remember we talked about it last year natural language white paper natural language

00:50:23   editing project raccoon something you know they all had weird names no it wasn't raccoon but yes i mean

00:50:29   why not uh that but yeah google have done that now right like that's in google photos so maybe something

00:50:36   like that i don't know that'd be also a bigger a bigger model also lets you do that so yeah um steven you

00:50:43   might be able to help me with this question the a19 pro which would be the chip that we'd expect to see

00:50:50   is this the first time we see kind of like a core that would go to the m5 uh or is this m4

00:50:57   i don't remember how what what way around it goes i don't remember okay maybe the discord knows

00:51:06   is the a19 pro gonna be the one on the updated uh three nanometer process i think the a18 pro was

00:51:15   wasn't it yeah the a18 is the second generation well well there's a second generation of the of the

00:51:22   first third nanometer or is it a new third it's gonna no the a19 pro will be the third generation

00:51:27   three nanometer process jason says it's the same core as the m5 so that's there you go that's the

00:51:33   information that i was looking for he's the person to know that so the all that to say that's another

00:51:37   reason why you would spend time talking about the ai performance in this chip is because the people that

00:51:43   care about what apple might do over the next year in their hardware this would be the first implication

00:51:49   of the capabilities of it right in theory yeah yeah all right cool my pick uh i'm innovating on um a

00:51:59   format of risky picks that i created in september of 2021 which informs the current system where i made a

00:52:08   a pick about the ipad mini and just like threw a bunch of stuff my pick was a new ipad mini is

00:52:14   introduced for a fresh design new colors previously not part of the product usbc smart connector and 5g

00:52:19   support and i got everything except a smart connector it was a heartbreak but the point of that was i

00:52:25   couldn't think of anything super risky anymore so i'm just gonna make it risky by throwing stuff at it

00:52:30   and so this time my pick begins with apple announces the iphone air which that's not risky but now i'm

00:52:38   going for it in the details so detail number one it weighs between 146 to 148 grams that is so

00:52:48   specific okay so either one four six seven or eight the reason that this is also risky is all the rumors

00:52:55   say 145 and i'm just gonna say that no one really knows so i'm going 146 to 148 uh it does not have the

00:53:05   worst quoted battery life of the 17 line it will be equal or better than the 17 wow okay oh boy setting

00:53:16   that baseline okay okay i have two ways that i think they might be able to do this one is a new battery

00:53:23   technology yeah which seems like they're gonna do the other is do you remember all those rumors of a

00:53:29   ai powered battery optimization like there is battery optimization stuff going on in 26 but it's not

00:53:38   powered by apple intelligence there's a lot of rumor about apple intelligence powered my thought is a

00:53:44   combination of new battery technology and software they may be able to get a smaller milliamp power

00:53:53   battery to last as long as the 17 on the specs they give at least hmm

00:53:59   that's my thought like apple has set kind of like the baseline of a battery right and they do this in

00:54:08   all their products i'm sure they will if they can't do it they can't do it but i'm sure that they will

00:54:13   try by hook or by quirk to not make it seem like this phone has like terrible battery life you know

00:54:19   point three the iphone air is more expensive than the iphone pro

00:54:27   yeah i i think that may be right for i yeah for a couple a couple of reasons uh one as jason said on

00:54:38   upgrade and federico said earlier that fourth iphone spot that the mini was in and now the plus is in

00:54:45   has struggled and so maybe apple abandons that price point for now i think they also can't build

00:54:51   this phone at that price point but i think most importantly this phone i think like is a on-ramp

00:54:59   to a foldable and that phone is gonna be expensive and so this is a step in that direction yeah well but

00:55:06   that will be a fifth phone yeah yeah but i mean in terms of price point like starting price point

00:55:12   there's gonna be a lot of our a lot of r&d costs in this phone yeah and they're gonna make you pay for

00:55:18   that yeah and so uh yeah i i just i don't i just imagine i don't think there is any need for this to be

00:55:27   in that spot yeah right that like what is it like 899 spot i just can't i also just can't imagine it

00:55:34   it would fit in that spot like this phone is so weird yeah i think that would mean they have to cut

00:55:39   things down and it makes it less of a good phone like for me one thing i really want if the air

00:55:46   doesn't have it it takes it off the table for me is like an always on display i really like it i use

00:55:51   it all the time at my desk 899 maybe they have to give that up but at whatever you're thinking 1299

00:55:58   uh 1199 whatever maybe they don't my my expectation is it's 1099 so it sits between

00:56:06   the iphone 16 and 16 pro max if those prices remain right like those prices that the iphone

00:56:15   16 the iphone 17 pro might come in at 1099 to begin with there's a rumor that they're going to be more

00:56:20   expensive but come with more storage is like an offset that doesn't make a difference it's still more

00:56:26   expensive you know what it's like you can you can tell me it's for that but it's it's more expensive

00:56:30   um but yeah i think that it will go price wise will be 17 17 pro 17 17 pro max that's what i think it

00:56:38   will be okay i have a question about your first point it weighs between 146 and 148 grams yeah does that

00:56:48   that mean it can weigh 146 147 or 148 yeah that's what he said okay okay does that need to be in

00:56:56   writing doesn't it mean that i think it does but i also read it there's there's there's a hyphen in

00:57:03   between the numbers so technically that's a range of grams okay yeah okay i figure it means that i don't

00:57:08   know but i don't know how words work but okay this is mine i i think i've i've like purposefully gone

00:57:14   i think a bit contrarian of a lot of the things that people think this phone's going to be but

00:57:19   this is also the phone i want you know what i mean like make the battery life good make it more expensive

00:57:24   than the pro so you've actually put what it needs in there i agree with you steven like well i think all

00:57:31   these phones i think it's ridiculous that like the 17 well it's ridiculous that the 16 doesn't have a

00:57:38   promotion display with always on right like the whole line should have that now i'm hoping maybe

00:57:44   this is the year they do it because they kind of i think they kind of have to do it with the air

00:57:48   although the problem with the air is well always on means battery life this one doesn't have a big

00:57:54   battery yeah um i don't know maybe it's always on but like there's not an option to have the

00:58:01   wallpaper so it's more like oledy uh they changed the way that it works by default it was on display

00:58:08   in 26 they made it blurry yeah so you could read your notifications i mean you think that's why i

00:58:14   guarantee you that's why why it is interesting interesting but yeah i turned that off i don't

00:58:19   know why they made that change but they did it okay my risky pick i am sorry for this one i cannot

00:58:27   wait please do it say it the iphone pro and pro max come in a unique finish it refracts slash reflects

00:58:38   light it has a rainbow effect as light passes over it apple calls this finish glass unbelievable what are

00:58:50   are you doing you know what are you sure there are especially the first point the like

00:58:57   steven are you sure you don't want to change this yeah the first point is literally it refracts

00:59:06   reflects light it is first of all it's like those are like two completely opposite things i'm encompassing

00:59:14   light interacting with it that's what i'm that's what i'm getting after i mean this isn't happening

00:59:18   right like you know i feel like you must know this it would have to be a transparent iphone made of

00:59:23   glass-like material and what exactly is it gonna refract or reflect light i said it right there you know

00:59:31   right which what light what light the light the light the light in the world outside you're walking

00:59:38   under a street light and you get a little don't do this do you want to lose like i don't understand

00:59:45   like it felt like you were just like i just don't want i told you this days ago and and and you stuck

00:59:52   with it brought to you by the people who suggested apple was going to make a deck there's no way this

00:59:59   could be in development and we don't know about it but there were rumors about it no there wasn't yeah

01:00:06   there were people saying just absolutely unhinged things about iphones and liquid glass and light will

01:00:14   reflect reflect that was just people saying stuff like that it wasn't anything

01:00:19   what what rumors find me the rumors mac rumors tim hardwood okay okay a new rumor out of china

01:00:27   today has sparked speculation that apple may be writing a unique new iphone 17 pro color that

01:00:32   somehow reflects the new design language of its ios 26 design where is this i'll put it in discord

01:00:41   the leaker who only claims to have heard of it but not seen stop reading seems to believe that the

01:00:51   color is what previous leaks have simply referred to as white quote but it appears differently depending

01:00:57   on the lighting

01:00:58   white

01:01:01   anthony burned me down on the discord steven is trying to balance his lead in the saint jude

01:01:09   competition to give mike a chance oh that's nice of you

01:01:13   yeah oh my head by 130 points a white based material that subtly shifts use depending on

01:01:20   light and angle could add a dynamic on wednesday a mac word report claimed to reveal all of the colors

01:01:26   that each iphone 17 model will come in allegedly based on an internal document the report listed white

01:01:32   as a color option for all models including the iphone 17 17 air 17 pro and 17 pro max

01:01:39   steven once again are you sure you want to have this risky peak

01:01:42   okay well all right respect respect well we all look silly you know if if they have the liquid glass

01:01:52   phone if they have the liquid glass phone i will do something in your honor that i will think about

01:01:59   wow yeah okay i mean with a promise like that how could i how could i go wrong yeah

01:02:07   okay to re uh state our risky picks federico says the new iphone 17 pro devices have additional

01:02:15   apple intelligence features mike says apple introduces the iphone air and he made some

01:02:20   very specific guesses about weight and price and then i said the iphone pro and pro max come in a unique

01:02:27   finish called glass it is now time for the flexis the flexis is a game held after each edition of

01:02:37   the rickies it consists of a series of additional picks in relation to the upcoming apple event or

01:02:44   year scoring is completed separately from the main game but like the rickies the order of picks is set

01:02:49   by the results of the previous game and ties will be broken by using dice by p calc please lie down

01:02:56   host host must make a minimum of five flexi picks each correct pick is awarded one point wrong picks

01:03:12   do not remove any points and no partial points may be awarded the winner is determined by comparing the

01:03:19   percentage of correct flexis made by each host the winner can use their chosen title as long as they

01:03:25   are the winner federico shall be named prince flexi and is known as king flexi when having won both the

01:03:30   keynote annual games mike has chosen duke of flexington and uses the name arch duke flexington when applicable

01:03:38   i am the attorney general flexi and uses the title secretary of the flex when necessary

01:03:44   loser of the flexis must compensate the winner of the flexis by donating to a charity of the winner's

01:03:50   choice obviously this month i would assume that is at st jude.org slash relay the amount of the donation

01:03:57   is 25 per wrong flexi made by the loser the money must be donated on air if someone holds all four titles

01:04:05   they were allowed to choose their own nickname you may be seated

01:04:10   all right i get to go first because i won the flexis at wbdc i have six for now for now

01:04:24   the iphone watch the iphone watch the apple watch ultra series 3 has a larger screen than the ultra 2

01:04:32   bump it up a little bit ios 26 gets a release date of the week of september 15th

01:04:41   don't want to pick a day huh a week is enough it's not a risky is it yeah okay you know flexis aren't

01:04:49   open to judging by the others i'm just asking you know i'm just asking you know i'm just asking

01:04:52   gonna like got it or not because like in your previous round it seemed like you really had

01:04:56   something and now like just wow hey you know you do apple releases a new external iphone battery

01:05:03   jaws introduces the pro iphones in a dark setting

01:05:10   apple announces air tags 2

01:05:17   and number six the iphone air is the quote one more thing

01:05:20   you're on this train too huh i am

01:05:24   i'm uh i'm uh i'm going down the rails of history okay

01:05:29   all right i have nine for now matching well we'll see uh

01:05:38   i had nine just want to know i had nine and federico had six and now yes federico see now

01:05:44   i have nine and now he has nine you gotta match the high end you know you gotta you gotta you gotta

01:05:50   have a wait till you see the another 11 i have ready to paste it okay all right cool we'll see

01:05:58   number one apple has a new lane yard accessory for the iphone um number two air tags 2 feature ultra

01:06:06   wideband support

01:06:07   number three apple announces a partnership with google for gemini

01:06:13   don't air tags already have ultra wide band

01:06:15   do they is it isn't that like their whole thing because you can do precision finding

01:06:21   is it

01:06:22   apple designed you one ship for ultra wideband yeah why don't you say i think the rumor is

01:06:31   enhanced or improved i think the idea is like a new generation white band

01:06:38   will be able to support it from further away i think new generation ultra wide band technology

01:06:45   that's how you can like walk to it right because if it's bluetooth it can't be like it's over

01:06:51   there it's over here that kind of thing yeah new generation ultra wide band technology steven you

01:06:56   have stairs in your new house and uh i i wonder if you've yet come across the fact where you're

01:07:02   trying to find something and it's like this might be on another floor have you done that yet

01:07:06   i have not had that happen so you know it can like point you can walk towards it and

01:07:12   you're like you're getting closer to it but the phone knows you're not actually closer based on

01:07:15   where it's telling you to go and it pops up and it's like this may be on another floor

01:07:19   and that's when you know to go over upstairs or downstairs to find your airpods i will have to

01:07:24   check that out yeah

01:07:25   anyway number three apple announces a partnership with google for gemini

01:07:31   because they're all they're allowed to be as friendly as they like now and yeah

01:07:34   this is something we didn't cover but yeah apple can keep getting that sweet sweet money and and no

01:07:39   one's happier about this they will get the money and if they build a search engine they will get the

01:07:45   data from google so that's nice yeah uh tim's a winner yeah number four all iphones have a

01:07:54   a pro motion display i think it's time we're gonna do it number five some of the new iphones have

01:08:02   a redesigned thermal system and big time you know you know that they they should do it these phones get

01:08:08   hot man um number six all iphones have an improved selfie camera so better front-facing camera yeah

01:08:18   do you think they're gonna say slow fees again uh that is a word i haven't heard in such a long time

01:08:24   and i hope to never hear again number seven the back of the pro iphones looks different

01:08:35   i really hope they did the two-tone thing because it also has been going on me yeah that's what you

01:08:40   mean yeah i want that i want that yeah that's gonna be really cool did you hear i also was thinking

01:08:45   about this again which is sometimes i just have to reuse things i say on upgrade to connect it doesn't

01:08:50   happen very often but it will always happen in the prediction episodes wow because titanium made the

01:08:55   phones lighter you go back to aluminium and glass they're gonna go back to where they were and wait no

01:09:01   no no no if you get rid of you i heard you say that on upgrade and you were wrong on upgrade and

01:09:07   you're wrong here yeah they were steel they were lighter than any feedback so am i really wrong i don't

01:09:13   think so i think so well it's tight what's light a titanium or aluminium i think aluminum you said you

01:09:20   think that doesn't sound like i mean they moved to titanium because they were steel we'll see okay

01:09:28   nevertheless i still want it to be light and it will make it light if they replace the gloss oh

01:09:32   yeah yeah definitely number eight shortcuts use model action for apple intelligence is mentioned

01:09:40   slash shown on screen um they could use all the good stuff they can get when talking about apple

01:09:48   intelligence they use model action is pretty cool and number nine ios 26 comes out on monday september 15th

01:09:57   love it uh also by the way uh aluminium is lighter than titanium there you go chat gpt about it and

01:10:05   can you trust that there's also a bunch of people in the discord can we trust them i don't know

01:10:11   they're all bots all right oh my god mike added some

01:10:17   yeah all right i've got 11 so far number one no iphone color has the word orange in its name

01:10:27   then even if it's orange they ain't calling it that and just that's that's my thought uh the iphone

01:10:35   line is called 17 okay it's not going to be 26 the iphone 17 air has a promotion display

01:10:44   okay there is an iphone air bumper case okay because you still got to feel how thin that thing is

01:10:52   you know matt display for the pro iphone oh i wish i know i went out when i wrote this down i was

01:11:02   basically wrote it down because of how excited it would make you oh my god why not though right like

01:11:08   they've worked out how to do it it's an option obviously it's an option it's not the display

01:11:14   on the ipad pro you can choose why can't you do it on the iphone pro yes yes for all the same reasons

01:11:22   why not let's just do it please yeah new headband for the vision pro oh oh okay okay

01:11:32   the iphone 17 the iphone 17 air is pulled from an envelope

01:11:34   i'll be so mad if they don't do this

01:11:39   maybe maybe or maybe your buddy john turners can wear really tight jeans

01:11:48   you can't even see it don't look too close

01:11:52   is there an iphone hair in your pocket you couldn't tell you couldn't tell it's not what

01:12:02   you think oh my word i've gone a bit hot and bothered now um yeah steven you got to be on the

01:12:08   my on on this wavelength for me the iphone 17 air uh yeah i think i'm on the way of an envelope

01:12:14   i think with the ipad air they hid it behind an apple pencil right i think is what they did for

01:12:21   that one and then famously or famous in my own mind for the ipad air 2 they had a laser cut the

01:12:27   pencil down and the ipad air 2 was behind it that was sick i had i was trying to i i had a thought the

01:12:33   other day that i've just had again like i had this thought while i was holding my child so i couldn't

01:12:37   look it up so like there's an answer to this question when did the iphone but the ipad air

01:12:44   become a thing like they they didn't go from ipad to ipad air and back to ipad again right like

01:12:51   the ipad was always available when they had the ipad air right you know what i mean like they added

01:12:56   it as a product right they didn't wasn't it in uh okay 20 2013 the first ipad air was 2013 it

01:13:04   replaced the ipad 4 the ipad my thought was right the well the no the ipad 4 october 2012 to

01:13:14   october 2014 the ipad 5th generation was not till 2017 so there was a gap where there was no regular

01:13:21   ipad that that is that so i'm sorry i phrased it incorrectly my original thought was that the ipad

01:13:28   air was on its own yes and then i was like really did they do because then i was trying to think like

01:13:34   when because then i was lost in like what the ipad air was the ipad air did used to just look like the

01:13:41   ipad it wasn't like um the ipad air now that looks like the ipad pro correct you know what i mean right

01:13:46   so that was fast because they also did that thing was the new ipad right they did that too that yeah

01:13:53   the new ipad that was the third one that was the third one yeah right all of this came from me starting

01:13:58   the thought of do you remember how good the ipad mini 2 was that was the thought that i had and then

01:14:02   sent me down this like like what was the names of all the ipads like i guess what am i gonna do and

01:14:08   i can't do anything except hold this child and it's got to be dark in the room and so i was just

01:14:13   thinking about ipads i feel like federico probably does that kind of stuff uh number eight apple

01:14:19   specifically calls out the blood oxygen features of the apple watch yeah because they've not been

01:14:24   allowed to talk about it but they're getting but they're getting sued again so i don't think they

01:14:28   will i don't think they care if they're shipping it maybe right like they're not being sued again

01:14:37   though right like massimo just said some stuff this is still it's still available it hasn't been taken

01:14:43   off but um yeah yeah uh the 17 line is all made of aluminium all of them uh i was 26 comes out on

01:14:54   tuesday september 16 i really hope you're right look against why not you know yeah yeah let's pick 10

01:15:01   pick 11 no date for mac os tahoe oh john is gonna be so happy and so upset at the same time yeah yeah

01:15:09   because i think they'll talk about it in october and it'll be an october event

01:15:12   man i would be so jealous of john if that's the case yeah i think it i think tahoe needs some more

01:15:19   time in the oven uh i added well one oh wow okay just one there is an orange iphone pro now what are

01:15:31   you saying here like i'm just intrigued because i said no iphone has the word orange in its name

01:15:37   right you saying it's just orange by the eye or yeah yeah name yeah yeah orange by the eye

01:15:42   okay okay there isn't there there is an iphone pro that is orange by the eye

01:15:49   what color is copper copper i think is different than orange i think it's got more

01:15:55   peak in it right but this is why i'm asking you that question because i think it will be a copper

01:15:59   number eight it'll be orange there is an iphone pro that is copper you just stole it straight from

01:16:06   number 10 the new iphone pro color is called tangerine oh that's very orange yeah yeah

01:16:20   imac g3 tangerine okay number 12 the new iphone color is called rust

01:16:31   no why not why not why not okay why not number nine maybe it is the new iphone

01:16:40   pro color is called copper oh wait isn't that you have orange by the eye and copper by the eye

01:16:51   come on steve them out you could do whatever you want but like come on come on i thought that you

01:16:59   were saying it was going to be called copper so so now we have orange by the eye and copper by the eye

01:17:04   and it's called copper come on i feel like you're letting your orange side down by just like now saying

01:17:12   it's copper you know i'm here to win number 11 the iphone air is introduced with a video that shows it

01:17:23   uh appear that makes it appear from behind an iphone 17 pro

01:17:37   laying flat on the surface so here's my question for you did they do that or did they do like the

01:17:45   other thing you know i mean is it like the iphone maybe they pick it up and there's an iphone 6 and

01:17:49   they pick it up again and then there's like a that'd be cool i don't know number 13 oh my god

01:17:54   tim cook says iphone 17 air before anyone else okay yeah makes sense i think he's gonna take the one

01:18:02   one more thing okay is that it i think i'm done i think i'm done okay i think i'm done all right

01:18:11   steven i'm done okay all right well those are the pics boys if you want to find us to make fun of our

01:18:24   picks we are on the internet federico is the editor in chief of mac stories dot net the host of a bunch
