246: I Just Want My Stories

00:00:00   oh god I can't imagine have to put a key [TS]

00:00:01   in a steering column Oh grow like an [TS]

00:00:04   animal it's fun twisting twisting [TS]

00:00:06   twisting the key is fun yeah [TS]

00:00:09   John how do you live man get in foot [TS]

00:00:11   down the clutch foot on the brake twist [TS]

00:00:12   the key that motion is still you know [TS]

00:00:15   it's the thing you know it's even better [TS]

00:00:17   than that [TS]

00:00:17   get in push the gas yeah yeah I'm sure [TS]

00:00:21   Jeff loves it when you just get out of [TS]

00:00:22   her car and leave it rolling down the [TS]

00:00:23   Drive running and unlocked all the [TS]

00:00:30   windows open air conditioning on radio [TS]

00:00:33   blaring you're probably serious I bet [TS]

00:00:36   this is happen at least once I I have [TS]

00:00:38   not left it like in year rolling but I [TS]

00:00:40   have left his car running and unlocked [TS]

00:00:42   [Laughter] [TS]

00:00:49   all right so let's let's start the show [TS]

00:00:52   in we'll start with some neutral [TS]

00:00:54   follow-up apparently people pay [TS]

00:00:57   attention to racing cars and people pay [TS]

00:01:00   attention to Formula One I'm not really [TS]

00:01:02   clear why and apparently pleaseplease [TS]

00:01:05   right Marco [TS]

00:01:07   apparently ever pretty much every racing [TS]

00:01:10   car has its paddles on the wheel [TS]

00:01:12   I was lamenting last week that the Alfa [TS]

00:01:15   Romeo had its paddles on the column [TS]

00:01:16   which I've heard other like car [TS]

00:01:19   reviewers and in people like that say oh [TS]

00:01:21   it always has to be on the column but I [TS]

00:01:23   don't really understand why cuz I didn't [TS]

00:01:25   like it that way and I and I had at the [TS]

00:01:27   same time a BMW loner and f30 loner and [TS]

00:01:31   that had the the paddles on the on the [TS]

00:01:33   wheel and I much preferred that so [TS]

00:01:36   anyway so a lot of people wrote in to [TS]

00:01:38   say pretty much every racing car has the [TS]

00:01:40   paddles on the wheel you were right [TS]

00:01:41   that's where it should be and somebody [TS]

00:01:44   and I don't I don't remember who this [TS]

00:01:46   was I apologize but somebody said to me [TS]

00:01:47   and this is just a theory but I mean it [TS]

00:01:49   makes sense to me maybe it's less of a [TS]

00:01:51   big deal for racecar drivers because [TS]

00:01:52   their wheels don't typically do like an [TS]

00:01:55   entire revolution if you think about it [TS]

00:01:57   they're typically you know doing maybe a [TS]

00:01:58   30 or 60 or maybe a 90-degree turn but [TS]

00:02:01   but I would assume not often not much [TS]

00:02:03   more than that if I'm wrong I don't [TS]

00:02:06   really care I was just just a thought [TS]

00:02:08   exercise so no big deal but I just [TS]

00:02:11   thought I'd cover that really quickly I [TS]

00:02:12   did [TS]

00:02:13   responses related this were due to me [TS]

00:02:16   musing about what f1 cars might be [TS]

00:02:17   knowing nothing about f1 and I had a [TS]

00:02:19   brain fart there that was my bad I was [TS]

00:02:20   like oh f1 cars they don't they don't [TS]

00:02:22   even use pedals cuz they got all those [TS]

00:02:24   buttons on the steering wheel and while [TS]

00:02:25   there is a very often a button to shift [TS]

00:02:27   into neutral [TS]

00:02:28   they still use paddles for everything so [TS]

00:02:30   never mind on that I did have to give [TS]

00:02:34   the alpha-male back I was very very sad [TS]

00:02:35   it pulled away in and I wept [TS]

00:02:38   not really but I was sad and now I'm [TS]

00:02:41   back to my my BMW life is rough I tell [TS]

00:02:44   you god I sound like such an intolerable [TS]

00:02:45   piece of crap alright moving on [TS]

00:02:47   let's toad actually it's getting no [TS]

00:02:49   better as it turns out let's talk about [TS]

00:02:50   our iPhone orders and our [TS]

00:02:52   thousand-dollar phones I quit this is [TS]

00:02:54   just going nowhere good so I think one [TS]

00:02:57   of the biggest things that we have [TS]

00:02:59   learned in this entire iPhone 10 cycle [TS]

00:03:02   is that the rumor mill is completely [TS]

00:03:06   full of shit now like it's complete bull [TS]

00:03:10   all of it it's heard out so much of it [TS]

00:03:13   was complete bull yeah [TS]

00:03:16   and we were and we were complicit or at [TS]

00:03:18   least speak for myself I was complicit [TS]

00:03:20   in it because I was I was probably the [TS]

00:03:22   most worried to the three of us about [TS]

00:03:24   not getting a phone until 2020 and I was [TS]

00:03:27   freaking out about it for no reason well [TS]

00:03:29   as well as it turns out spoiler alert [TS]

00:03:31   now we're he's in but but yeah I was [TS]

00:03:34   just as deep in this as anyone else if [TS]

00:03:36   not more so and I don't know I was [TS]

00:03:38   trying to like do a retrospective which [TS]

00:03:40   is a word that you don't really [TS]

00:03:41   understand Marco but John will I was [TS]

00:03:44   trying to have my own little one-man [TS]

00:03:45   retro meeting I believe it's called a [TS]

00:03:47   post-mortem in the parking lot yeah [TS]

00:03:49   exactly right yeah so you do know so [TS]

00:03:51   anyway so I was I was tossing things [TS]

00:03:53   into the parking lot I was as I was [TS]

00:03:55   having my one-person retro and I don't [TS]

00:03:58   really know specifically where this [TS]

00:04:01   notion came from I mean I was one of the [TS]

00:04:03   ones parroting it so I'm guilty I am a [TS]

00:04:05   hundred and fifty percent guilty but [TS]

00:04:07   where did we all get it in our brains [TS]

00:04:09   this is not just the three of us this is [TS]

00:04:11   the Royal us where did all the talking [TS]

00:04:13   heads get it in their brains that it was [TS]

00:04:16   going to be this bad like Meredith [TS]

00:04:18   discomfort the phone the phone is supply [TS]

00:04:20   constrained and people had guesses about [TS]

00:04:22   how many they were going to make and [TS]

00:04:23   there [TS]

00:04:24   stories about parts shortages so that's [TS]

00:04:27   that's what it was it is like oh they [TS]

00:04:28   can't make enough of those 3d dot [TS]

00:04:29   thingies and supposedly they lowered [TS]

00:04:31   their standards for the dot thing used [TS]

00:04:33   to make more of them but then Apple said [TS]

00:04:35   no we didn't do that that's BS I mean at [TS]

00:04:37   this point fast few cycles you have to [TS]

00:04:39   imagine that a lot of those stories [TS]

00:04:41   about apples manufacturing problems and [TS]

00:04:44   blah blah blah are things motivated or [TS]

00:04:48   not planted by competitors but like that [TS]

00:04:51   they're they're motivated stories that [TS]

00:04:53   somebody wants to put that information [TS]

00:04:55   out there to sow doubt into Apple [TS]

00:04:58   situation now they you know they don't [TS]

00:05:01   have enough iPhone tends to go around [TS]

00:05:03   just like they don't have enough of many [TS]

00:05:04   then you have an iPhone you know sevens [TS]

00:05:07   to go around certainly another jet-black [TS]

00:05:08   ladies always shortages all right it's [TS]

00:05:11   very difficult to tell until Apple [TS]

00:05:12   starts reporting numbers exactly how big [TS]

00:05:14   this shortage was but last show oh you [TS]

00:05:17   know we were talking about was will we [TS]

00:05:19   be able to get our phones forget about [TS]

00:05:21   how many Apple cells and so and so [TS]

00:05:22   although we did touching that briefly [TS]

00:05:23   and but everything was just estimates [TS]

00:05:25   like that one newspaper whatever said [TS]

00:05:27   they it looks like they're gonna have [TS]

00:05:29   four times fewer phones in previous [TS]

00:05:34   years but we'll find out when Apple [TS]

00:05:35   reports how many iPhones did they sell [TS]

00:05:37   between launch and the end of the year [TS]

00:05:39   although they have a fiscal year I don't [TS]

00:05:41   know how this all works but anyway we'll [TS]

00:05:42   find out and it could be that the [TS]

00:05:45   numbers are dead-on really they sold 1/4 [TS]

00:05:48   as many as they did last year but that's [TS]

00:05:51   not what we're talking about here what [TS]

00:05:52   we're talking about here is we were all [TS]

00:05:53   staying up to 3m to otter phones and [TS]

00:05:55   some of us were very very pessimistic [TS]

00:05:56   about getting a phone anytime soon so [TS]

00:05:59   how did it go for everybody assuming we [TS]

00:06:02   all stayed up I think it's pretty safe [TS]

00:06:05   to say that Marco and I did and since [TS]

00:06:07   I've got the mic I will say that I [TS]

00:06:09   stayed up my experience was slightly [TS]

00:06:12   worse than the watch than the LTE watch [TS]

00:06:14   my experience with the LTE watch was [TS]

00:06:16   stunningly good it was the the Apple [TS]

00:06:18   Store app was live at 301 or something [TS]

00:06:20   like that I was in and out in no time in [TS]

00:06:23   this in this instance it was typical [TS]

00:06:25   Apple which is to say five to ten [TS]

00:06:27   minutes late now in the defense of Apple [TS]

00:06:30   maybe that's a aggregation issue or [TS]

00:06:34   something to do with CD enzyme now [TS]

00:06:36   side of my my comfort zone but one way [TS]

00:06:38   or another it was like 305 ish that [TS]

00:06:41   everything woke up I did use the Apple [TS]

00:06:43   store app and surprisingly I heard a [TS]

00:06:45   fair bit of reports from like Twitter [TS]

00:06:48   and whatnot that the Apple store app was [TS]

00:06:49   not the pretty much flawless experience [TS]

00:06:51   for everyone that it had been for the [TS]

00:06:53   last few years I had a few people say [TS]

00:06:55   that they actually had better lock on on [TS]

00:06:57   the website which is stunning because [TS]

00:06:59   anytime I've tried that it's been a [TS]

00:07:00   disaster but anyway about 3:05 I ordered [TS]

00:07:03   my phone and then I I rolled over and [TS]

00:07:06   ordered Aaron's phone and got both of [TS]

00:07:09   them and they should be here Friday so [TS]

00:07:11   it worked out really really well for me [TS]

00:07:13   to a degree that I did not expect I did [TS]

00:07:16   choose to ship to home I was thinking [TS]

00:07:18   about doing a store pickup which I've [TS]

00:07:21   never done before and I know would get [TS]

00:07:23   me my phone earlier in the day because [TS]

00:07:24   typically EPS doesn't get to us until [TS]

00:07:26   like 5:00 or 6:00 at night on iPhone day [TS]

00:07:28   but I was scared that just going through [TS]

00:07:30   that whole process especially when I'm [TS]

00:07:32   unfamiliar with it would would slow me [TS]

00:07:34   down too much [TS]

00:07:35   and I would lose my chance so both of [TS]

00:07:37   them will be delivered to the house [TS]

00:07:38   sometime Friday so I'm working from home [TS]

00:07:41   Friday if you happen to be listening to [TS]

00:07:42   this from my job I will be here I will [TS]

00:07:45   be here at the house making sure that I [TS]

00:07:46   know I'm sick Marco how did how did it [TS]

00:07:53   fare for you pretty similar I used the [TS]

00:07:56   app as usual the app didn't come up for [TS]

00:07:58   me until like you know 3:05 or 306 like [TS]

00:08:01   it was wait and like I was in some [TS]

00:08:03   slacks where like some people are [TS]

00:08:04   already completing the entire orders and [TS]

00:08:06   reporting back what their dates were [TS]

00:08:07   when they completed the order before my [TS]

00:08:09   store was even up mmm but that happens [TS]

00:08:11   all the time I mean the Apple ordering [TS]

00:08:13   process with the iPhones has gotten [TS]

00:08:15   really really good with just that one [TS]

00:08:18   exception the only part about it that [TS]

00:08:20   really feels unfair is that there's a [TS]

00:08:24   huge variance in when people's stores [TS]

00:08:27   come up and it could be like 15 minutes [TS]

00:08:29   apart like it's a big variance and so [TS]

00:08:32   some people said they saw the store like [TS]

00:08:33   at 2:58 so and some people didn't see [TS]

00:08:36   the store until 3:10 and like it's a [TS]

00:08:38   huge range usually I fall on the on the [TS]

00:08:41   worst side of this rings like usually [TS]

00:08:43   for me it's it's somewhere around like [TS]

00:08:45   five five or six minutes after the hour [TS]

00:08:46   and you can try like alternating between [TS]

00:08:49   cell [TS]

00:08:50   and Wi-Fi to be on different networks [TS]

00:08:53   some people suggested even trying the [TS]

00:08:55   VPN I didn't get that far into it I [TS]

00:08:56   didn't think about it at 3:00 in the [TS]

00:08:58   morning [TS]

00:08:59   surprisingly I don't but like you know [TS]

00:09:01   the it just seems like it's a total [TS]

00:09:04   crapshoot when your store will come up [TS]

00:09:06   and that makes a pretty big difference [TS]

00:09:08   in whether you get one on day one or not [TS]

00:09:10   usually like if you're if yours comes up [TS]

00:09:12   at 3:07 you're probably not getting day [TS]

00:09:15   one delivery on most high-profile [TS]

00:09:17   projects in parks you know the same [TS]

00:09:19   thing happen with the watch you know [TS]

00:09:20   like any kind of high profile through AM [TS]

00:09:23   Apple longs usually this is a problem [TS]

00:09:24   jet black phone same problem you know so [TS]

00:09:26   like the whole rest of the system feels [TS]

00:09:28   very good and very fair and it has [TS]

00:09:30   dramatically improved over the last few [TS]

00:09:32   years and it's just that one piece that [TS]

00:09:34   feels like if you're on the batter that [TS]

00:09:37   it feels like you're getting screwed for [TS]

00:09:38   no reason so I hope Apple can figure out [TS]

00:09:40   a way to improve that you know i I've [TS]

00:09:43   never done anything on their scale [TS]

00:09:44   before but I haves on high scale things [TS]

00:09:47   it is possible to make everything go up [TS]

00:09:49   at you know and almost exactly the same [TS]

00:09:51   time like that is a thing that can [TS]

00:09:53   happen on the internet it's not easy but [TS]

00:09:55   it's pop so like if they prioritize that [TS]

00:09:59   maybe they don't realize how annoying [TS]

00:10:00   this is but I hope someone I hope [TS]

00:10:03   whoever at Apple cares a lot about these [TS]

00:10:04   things about getting these right about [TS]

00:10:06   building in systems like the thing where [TS]

00:10:08   if it can't kind of the carrier it like [TS]

00:10:10   reserves it for you and emails you again [TS]

00:10:11   like tomorrow like a lot of thought has [TS]

00:10:14   gone into that system and for the most [TS]

00:10:16   part it's great and there's just this [TS]

00:10:17   one big glaring problem with it that I [TS]

00:10:20   hope they can figure out a way to fix or [TS]

00:10:21   at least let's reduce that variance and [TS]

00:10:24   CDN availability so that like maybe [TS]

00:10:26   every one store comes up in the same one [TS]

00:10:27   minute instead of the same 15 minutes [TS]

00:10:29   that's the only thing about the system [TS]

00:10:30   that feels unfair a lot of its [TS]

00:10:32   competitive a lot of its cutthroat but [TS]

00:10:34   all of it feels fair except that yeah I [TS]

00:10:37   would agree with that I can't think of a [TS]

00:10:40   any particular way that they could do [TS]

00:10:43   better with it I mean I guess maybe a [TS]

00:10:47   lottery but I think just like we [TS]

00:10:50   lamented when when wEDC went to a [TS]

00:10:52   lottery I think there's something to be [TS]

00:10:54   said for having the dedication to wake [TS]

00:10:58   up at 3:00 in the morning if you're on [TS]

00:10:59   the East Coast to actually in [TS]

00:11:00   sure that you get one you know initially [TS]

00:11:02   in the same way it rewarded you WDC [TS]

00:11:05   rewarded the people who had like seven [TS]

00:11:07   different notification strategies in [TS]

00:11:09   order to know when tickets went on sale [TS]

00:11:11   and and maybe maybe a more fair answer [TS]

00:11:14   would be a lottery but in if not that I [TS]

00:11:16   think you're right that this is as fair [TS]

00:11:18   as it can get with the CDN propagation [TS]

00:11:21   issues notwithstanding and and the thing [TS]

00:11:23   is like a lottery like a few blows you [TS]

00:11:25   guys to that I think there it's such a [TS]

00:11:27   more complicated thing than WC tickets [TS]

00:11:29   like first of all you're talking about [TS]

00:11:30   like allocating five thousand conference [TS]

00:11:33   tickets versus ten million phones [TS]

00:11:35   there's a pretty big difference in scale [TS]

00:11:37   yeah and and of course the phones are [TS]

00:11:39   tied to carrier things and have to be [TS]

00:11:41   checked out with carrier they're like so [TS]

00:11:42   the phones are way more complicated than [TS]

00:11:44   WTC and there's way more of them so the [TS]

00:11:47   same system doesn't necessarily apply [TS]

00:11:49   again I think I did insist may have I [TS]

00:11:51   agree with you I think it's fine they [TS]

00:11:52   just need to fix that one thing anyway [TS]

00:11:54   so all that being said I did wake up at [TS]

00:11:57   three in the morning I did place an [TS]

00:11:59   order successfully for my iPhone ten on [TS]

00:12:01   day one delivery I didn't do store pick [TS]

00:12:03   up just a delivery store pick up is fine [TS]

00:12:06   but you still have to wait in such a [TS]

00:12:08   long line for pickup on day one like if [TS]

00:12:11   if you're not day one and you do pick up [TS]

00:12:13   at the store it's much faster you know [TS]

00:12:14   there's basically no line or a very [TS]

00:12:16   short one but on day one you're waiting [TS]

00:12:18   on line just like everyone else you're [TS]

00:12:20   just waiting on like a different roped [TS]

00:12:21   off section of the line they if you if [TS]

00:12:23   you have reservation but you're still [TS]

00:12:25   gonna be there for like two hours yeah [TS]

00:12:26   so I'm looking forward to anyway just to [TS]

00:12:29   conclude the rumor mill thing before we [TS]

00:12:30   leave this topic in general the rumor [TS]

00:12:32   mill has gotten so much wrong since [TS]

00:12:36   about a year ago or so when there was a [TS]

00:12:40   rumor going around that one of Mark [TS]

00:12:42   durman's big sources was like escorted [TS]

00:12:44   out of campus very publicly I don't know [TS]

00:12:47   if that was true or not [TS]

00:12:48   but it certainly does seem like there's [TS]

00:12:51   not a lot of not a lot of leaks out of [TS]

00:12:53   Apple anymore and the by far the most [TS]

00:12:57   credible information we got about the [TS]

00:12:59   iPhone 10 leaked out of Apple itself you [TS]

00:13:02   know in in there too software of leaks [TS]

00:13:04   it didn't leak out of anywhere else like [TS]

00:13:06   the the rumor mill was basically you [TS]

00:13:10   know empty they all they were doing for [TS]

00:13:12   the most part was reporting on what [TS]

00:13:13   Apple accidentally [TS]

00:13:15   almost everything else they've reported [TS]

00:13:17   ended up being BS like now you know as [TS]

00:13:19   we're getting more information about the [TS]

00:13:22   phone people are using the foam we're [TS]

00:13:23   hearing more from Apple executives like [TS]

00:13:25   on the record stories and stuff it [TS]

00:13:27   certainly seems like the entire like [TS]

00:13:28   touch ID under the glass thing was [TS]

00:13:30   completely false that there are now [TS]

00:13:32   multiply Apple executives directly [TS]

00:13:33   stating that in interviews and I'm [TS]

00:13:35   inclined I'm inclined to believe them I [TS]

00:13:36   don't think they would lie about that [TS]

00:13:38   kind of thing I think it you know it [TS]

00:13:39   wouldn't serve a menorah lie about that [TS]

00:13:40   we're now hearing things like you know [TS]

00:13:42   that like the like face ID having issues [TS]

00:13:45   and everything those are probably BS to [TS]

00:13:47   the component thing and having [TS]

00:13:48   adjustments Apple directly called that [TS]

00:13:50   out and deny it which they never do for [TS]

00:13:53   things like that like that's [TS]

00:13:54   unprecedented you know for the most part [TS]

00:13:56   so that also I'm inclined to believe [TS]

00:13:57   because they so rarely ever comment on [TS]

00:14:00   things like that publicly it's like that [TS]

00:14:02   was probably BS it seems like anything [TS]

00:14:04   that was about supply being super short [TS]

00:14:08   was probably BS to because here's the [TS]

00:14:11   thing right now [TS]

00:14:12   so we every one us other podcasters Tech [TS]

00:14:15   Park iPhones the rumor sites we were all [TS]

00:14:17   expecting this to be a massive backorder [TS]

00:14:20   situation we were saying on the show [TS]

00:14:22   like you know 2018 isn't that far away [TS]

00:14:24   we were all saying like we would be [TS]

00:14:26   lucky to get it you know waking up at [TS]

00:14:29   3:00 a.m. [TS]

00:14:29   we'd be lucky to get it by December and [TS]

00:14:32   then you know it won't be too long [TS]

00:14:34   before it's 2018 well guess what right [TS]

00:14:36   now today as we record almost a week [TS]

00:14:38   later the latest estimates say five to [TS]

00:14:41   six weeks [TS]

00:14:42   that's mid-december a week later you can [TS]

00:14:45   still order it and have it come this [TS]

00:14:46   year because then this here's almost [TS]

00:14:48   over it's like that's pretty good so one [TS]

00:14:52   of two things is true either there is [TS]

00:14:55   way less demand for this phone than [TS]

00:14:57   anybody thought which i think is pretty [TS]

00:14:58   unlikely or most of those reports about [TS]

00:15:02   there being incredibly short supplies [TS]

00:15:04   and everything are wrong so and that's [TS]

00:15:06   just adds even more to the pile of [TS]

00:15:09   rumors that were wrong about the iPhone [TS]

00:15:11   10 like we heard so many everything [TS]

00:15:14   about the software we heard was wrong [TS]

00:15:15   like everything about the home indicator [TS]

00:15:18   situation the home gesture that was all [TS]

00:15:20   wrong like we heard so much wrong stuff [TS]

00:15:23   about the iPhone 10 that it really this [TS]

00:15:26   is [TS]

00:15:27   this has been a bad year for the Apple [TS]

00:15:29   rumor game and in some ways to kind of [TS]

00:15:32   like you know good riddance it was [TS]

00:15:33   getting a little bit too good it was [TS]

00:15:35   good it was certainly like a little too [TS]

00:15:37   spoilery on a lot of the new products [TS]

00:15:39   you know I'm saying this here not only [TS]

00:15:43   to call them out but also to kind of [TS]

00:15:46   have to kind of help the world help me [TS]

00:15:48   remind myself when I get caught up in [TS]

00:15:51   talking about these rumors cuz I - like [TS]

00:15:52   you said Casey I - have been totally [TS]

00:15:54   complicit in discussing these rumors as [TS]

00:15:56   if they were almost a sure thing or if [TS]

00:15:57   they were sure thing because for so long [TS]

00:15:58   the rumors were that good like for for [TS]

00:16:01   so long in like the heyday of mark [TS]

00:16:03   Berman like two years ago they actually [TS]

00:16:06   like they were getting every detail of [TS]

00:16:08   every product like it they were nailing [TS]

00:16:10   so much before before the release it was [TS]

00:16:13   it was actually really unfun it was like [TS]

00:16:16   it was kind of fun to be a commentator [TS]

00:16:17   but it was unfun to like watch the [TS]

00:16:19   events and just see them unveil the [TS]

00:16:21   things that you already knew about like [TS]

00:16:22   two months ago in great detail no less [TS]

00:16:24   but we all all of us commentators and [TS]

00:16:27   Apple fans and readers of these sites [TS]

00:16:30   and and followers of the Apple news we [TS]

00:16:32   all have to now readjust from that time [TS]

00:16:35   that now we have to probably assume that [TS]

00:16:39   most of the rumors that we're hearing [TS]

00:16:40   are wrong rather than assuming that [TS]

00:16:42   they're right and then figuring out [TS]

00:16:44   later than some of them are wrong let me [TS]

00:16:45   do the opposite of helping you Mark Owen [TS]

00:16:47   said once again that I generally [TS]

00:16:49   disagree with your assessment that the [TS]

00:16:50   rumor mill was off before apples leaks [TS]

00:16:53   we knew all screen oled phone with face [TS]

00:16:58   ID face ID leaked face ID leaks so early [TS]

00:17:02   before any software leaks and yes there [TS]

00:17:04   were tons of reports about details that [TS]

00:17:06   were wrong and yes apples exec said you [TS]

00:17:09   know we committed to face ID and we [TS]

00:17:11   never really spent any time trying to do [TS]

00:17:12   under the screen or side things and [TS]

00:17:14   stuff like that that's you know that's [TS]

00:17:15   all well and good right but there's [TS]

00:17:17   always a certain amount of noise so even [TS]

00:17:18   before Apple software leaks which were [TS]

00:17:20   massive and gave us huge amounts of [TS]

00:17:22   totally verified real Zee real [TS]

00:17:24   information even before that we knew [TS]

00:17:27   almost everything about this phone what [TS]

00:17:29   it looked like the shape the size down [TS]

00:17:31   to the millimeter the orientation of the [TS]

00:17:32   cameras how many cameras there would be [TS]

00:17:34   the fact that it would be all screen the [TS]

00:17:35   fact that the scream was OLED the fact [TS]

00:17:36   that it would detect your face that's [TS]

00:17:37   how you are unlock it everything else is [TS]

00:17:39   details [TS]

00:17:40   I think the still for these phone [TS]

00:17:42   products it is impossible so far for [TS]

00:17:45   Apple to actually keep anything like [TS]

00:17:46   this secret there was a lot of BS and [TS]

00:17:49   misinformation especially the stories [TS]

00:17:51   and we've said this at the time we were [TS]

00:17:52   discussing them really like apples [TS]

00:17:54   considering like you know using whether [TS]

00:17:56   it's going to have face ID under there [TS]

00:17:58   it was like a month before or it was [TS]

00:18:00   have touch ID on the screen it was like [TS]

00:18:01   a month before the an intro announcement [TS]

00:18:03   it's like they're like displaced in time [TS]

00:18:05   where maybe this was true a year and a [TS]

00:18:07   half ago we're just hearing about it now [TS]

00:18:09   but always the the rumors especially on [TS]

00:18:11   a lot of the rumor sites are phrased as [TS]

00:18:14   if it's happening now and it's [TS]

00:18:15   nonsensical like I mean who was it uh [TS]

00:18:17   Danis is named and rekey Oh what patent [TS]

00:18:20   I don't pronounce his name something [TS]

00:18:21   like that I'm pretty sure you're right [TS]

00:18:22   on the Dan part it's Ritchie oh I think [TS]

00:18:24   yeah some yeah one of apples people was [TS]

00:18:28   it was an oppressed thing and they said [TS]

00:18:29   he said that they had locked the design [TS]

00:18:31   for the iPhone 10 in November that's [TS]

00:18:33   November of last year right now today [TS]

00:18:38   yeah they'd locked it a year ago right [TS]

00:18:40   and yet there were rumors stories like [TS]

00:18:42   two months ago that Apple is debating [TS]

00:18:44   what should do with face ID versus touch [TS]

00:18:46   ID under the screen and know what do you [TS]

00:18:48   know they're not like I mean that we [TS]

00:18:50   said we knew those were BS at the time [TS]

00:18:52   but I still think that the combination [TS]

00:18:54   of the rumor mill knowing so much about [TS]

00:18:56   this phone before any leaks and then the [TS]

00:18:58   leaks basically putting highlighter over [TS]

00:19:01   the details that are right and sort of [TS]

00:19:03   Xing out the ones that are wrong means [TS]

00:19:05   that we still more or less knew what was [TS]

00:19:07   getting introduced and now I'm you know [TS]

00:19:09   one way I kind of like being surprised [TS]

00:19:11   but also kind of like you're in detail [TS]

00:19:12   so I could go either way but just [TS]

00:19:15   because the rumors especially motivated [TS]

00:19:17   rumors like Oh apples having [TS]

00:19:18   manufacturing problems Oh fear [TS]

00:19:20   uncertainty and doubt especially since [TS]

00:19:22   things like that there's reasons for [TS]

00:19:24   them to exist and they're gonna be wrong [TS]

00:19:26   we're in a while I don't think that's [TS]

00:19:27   that big of a deal and okay I I don't [TS]

00:19:30   know I'm I'm not adjusting my attitude [TS]

00:19:32   towards rumors because I don't mind is a [TS]

00:19:35   bunch of BS noise mixed in with the real [TS]

00:19:37   information and I still think there's a [TS]

00:19:39   ton more real information than we used [TS]

00:19:41   to have about things because this Apple [TS]

00:19:43   makes too many of these phones supply [TS]

00:19:44   chain is too leaky and we're just gonna [TS]

00:19:47   have to accept that we're more or less [TS]

00:19:49   going to know what the next phone is [TS]

00:19:51   going to be like and that all we have to [TS]

00:19:53   worry about of the detail [TS]

00:19:54   and then it sometimes like a few weeks [TS]

00:19:56   before intro Apple tells so detailed [TS]

00:19:58   accidentally by releasing about just [TS]

00:19:59   software no I mean I think you know we [TS]

00:20:02   did hear a lot of rumors that ended up [TS]

00:20:04   being true but the thing but like with [TS]

00:20:06   the rumor mill like the challenge is [TS]

00:20:07   always like knowing what parts of this [TS]

00:20:10   are actually likely to be real or not [TS]

00:20:11   and usually like you know during the [TS]

00:20:14   really good days of the rumor mills like [TS]

00:20:16   two years ago you could be sure almost [TS]

00:20:19   everything they said was was actually [TS]

00:20:20   true but until apple's software leaks we [TS]

00:20:24   didn't know whether the products would [TS]

00:20:27   be like possibility a B C or D or many [TS]

00:20:30   of the details but we knew exactly what [TS]

00:20:32   it would look we'd said well not I mean [TS]

00:20:34   like I save some of the images of like [TS]

00:20:37   like down to the millimeter you know [TS]

00:20:40   when people were selling cases for it we [TS]

00:20:42   knew what this thing would look like [TS]

00:20:43   they were still questions like I can't [TS]

00:20:44   tell if it's tied into that screen can [TS]

00:20:46   you right and same with the face ID like [TS]

00:20:48   that rumor was really long it took a [TS]

00:20:50   really long time of coming but didn't [TS]

00:20:51   really get confirmed until much later I [TS]

00:20:55   but what I'm saying it's like you know [TS]

00:20:58   is this the next iPhone and they'd show [TS]

00:21:00   you some 3d render yeah that was that [TS]

00:21:01   was the next iPhone and we knew it a [TS]

00:21:03   long long time ago will it recognize [TS]

00:21:05   your face that was the only credible [TS]

00:21:06   rumor we had other than various other [TS]

00:21:08   places to put touch ID and so that was [TS]

00:21:10   the only debate it's like Oh surely [TS]

00:21:12   it'll do the face thing but is it gonna [TS]

00:21:13   have touch ID at all anymore under the [TS]

00:21:15   screen on the back like that was a [TS]

00:21:17   question but we knew like the face ID [TS]

00:21:19   would be there so I feel like we had a [TS]

00:21:21   really good picture of this phone and it [TS]

00:21:23   all turned out to be correct and the [TS]

00:21:26   details that turned out to be wrong [TS]

00:21:27   we're interesting especially when we [TS]

00:21:28   were discussing you know a touch ID in [TS]

00:21:30   the back and the best one was the the [TS]

00:21:33   game of telephone rumour about touch ID [TS]

00:21:34   being on the home button do you remember [TS]

00:21:35   that rumour mm-hmm right and that that's [TS]

00:21:38   explicable now you see how it works like [TS]

00:21:40   because you have to double tap the the [TS]

00:21:41   the power button to make Apple pay work [TS]

00:21:44   and it puts a little highlight anything [TS]

00:21:46   over it right so somebody like in this [TS]

00:21:48   game of telephone knew about that and [TS]

00:21:50   you know through seven different people [TS]

00:21:52   it becomes suddenly touch ID and the [TS]

00:21:54   power button which and I really made any [TS]

00:21:55   sense because it's not big enough but [TS]

00:21:56   anyway even things like that I loved [TS]

00:21:58   seeing after the fact oh that's that's [TS]

00:22:00   what they were confused about there was [TS]

00:22:02   never touch adding the power button but [TS]

00:22:04   somebody knew that piece of information [TS]

00:22:05   and it [TS]

00:22:07   like you know lost in translation and [TS]

00:22:09   then all of a sudden this rumor came out [TS]

00:22:10   of it so I think that's just par for the [TS]

00:22:12   course of rumors I don't know I feel [TS]

00:22:14   like the rumor mill was so sketchy and [TS]

00:22:17   then around the time with the lost [TS]

00:22:19   iPhone 4 [TS]

00:22:20   I think sources got really good and then [TS]

00:22:23   in the last year so like I think Marco [TS]

00:22:26   had said if sources have been not as [TS]

00:22:30   good because I feel like we knew but [TS]

00:22:33   even without software software releases [TS]

00:22:36   we knew exactly what this stuff would [TS]

00:22:37   look like like to the pixels so to speak [TS]

00:22:39   I understand it's a terrible analogy but [TS]

00:22:40   now if it wasn't for software releases [TS]

00:22:43   we know we know the broad strokes you're [TS]

00:22:45   right John but I don't think without the [TS]

00:22:47   home pod debacle we would have known as [TS]

00:22:50   specifically as we have in prior years [TS]

00:22:52   but I don't think it's broad strokes [TS]

00:22:55   like we didn't have if it wasn't for [TS]

00:22:56   that phone left in a bar we wouldn't [TS]

00:22:58   have known exactly what the iPhone 4 [TS]

00:23:00   looked like until somebody found one but [TS]

00:23:01   we knew exactly what the iPhone 10 would [TS]

00:23:03   look like maybe some surface details we [TS]

00:23:05   didn't know I feel like the iPhone 8 we [TS]

00:23:07   didn't have a really good grasp on [TS]

00:23:09   surface details maybe but when you have [TS]

00:23:12   millimeter perfect you know measured [TS]

00:23:15   drawings of the phone months ahead of [TS]

00:23:17   time that turn out to be 100% accurate [TS]

00:23:19   so I hear that people could build cases [TS]

00:23:21   based on them that is unprecedented we [TS]

00:23:23   didn't have that for the iPhone 3GS for [TS]

00:23:25   the iPhone for like back then you know [TS]

00:23:27   being left in a bar was the only way we [TS]

00:23:28   were gonna get that kind of thing so but [TS]

00:23:31   like that but there are so many there's [TS]

00:23:32   so much noise you said John like I feel [TS]

00:23:34   like part of the Apple rumor game is [TS]

00:23:36   always trying to figure out like you [TS]

00:23:38   know what what if this will actually [TS]

00:23:39   cause like everybody who you know floats [TS]

00:23:43   their head near Apple or is a sub is a [TS]

00:23:45   you know friend of a nephew of of a [TS]

00:23:47   supplier or something like everybody who [TS]

00:23:49   was anywhere near Apple can leak [TS]

00:23:53   something about what they think they [TS]

00:23:54   might be working on because they had one [TS]

00:23:56   part made or they heard from a friend of [TS]

00:23:59   a friend of a friend who works at a man [TS]

00:24:00   at a factory or you know something like [TS]

00:24:02   that there's always something about like [TS]

00:24:03   or even you know people on campus who [TS]

00:24:05   leaked you know people inside the [TS]

00:24:06   company they can leak about things that [TS]

00:24:08   they've seen or heard about around [TS]

00:24:10   campus but none of that has a strong [TS]

00:24:13   correlation to what actually gets [TS]

00:24:14   released and how things actually ship [TS]

00:24:16   and what the final version of things [TS]

00:24:17   actually look like or do or work so [TS]

00:24:20   the challenge of the rumor mill has [TS]

00:24:21   always been okay you have all this [TS]

00:24:24   information ten percent of it is true [TS]

00:24:26   but you don't know what ten percent [TS]

00:24:28   until the event okay and that part has [TS]

00:24:32   has reverted back to as bad as it used [TS]

00:24:35   to be that part was better two years ago [TS]

00:24:38   and that part is now back to where it [TS]

00:24:40   was ten years ago and which is basically [TS]

00:24:42   all over the place and not that useful [TS]

00:24:44   so that's what I'm saying like it's not [TS]

00:24:47   that it's not that we won't have seen [TS]

00:24:49   many of the details ahead of time but we [TS]

00:24:52   won't know which of the details we've [TS]

00:24:53   seen are true and which will ship you [TS]

00:24:55   know and that's the kind of thing that [TS]

00:24:57   used to leak a lot better than it does [TS]

00:24:59   now and that's what I'm very happy about [TS]

00:25:01   now but again that's also what it needs [TS]

00:25:03   to now and it's now adjust myself to by [TS]

00:25:07   default disbelieve rumor sites rather [TS]

00:25:10   than by default believing them the way [TS]

00:25:11   I've been doing the last two years I [TS]

00:25:13   don't know if you want to change your [TS]

00:25:14   default but and on this front I think [TS]

00:25:20   the iPhone 10 was actually a tricky case [TS]

00:25:23   too because so much was changing we knew [TS]

00:25:25   so much was changing with the iPhone 10 [TS]

00:25:26   so with so much up for grabs there's [TS]

00:25:28   less sort of bedrock that you can you [TS]

00:25:30   know say well it's an iPhone and these [TS]

00:25:33   two minor things change once you get rid [TS]

00:25:35   of all the stuff on the front and make [TS]

00:25:37   it all screen there are many [TS]

00:25:39   possibilities with how that can go [TS]

00:25:40   especially before the software leaks it [TS]

00:25:42   was that's why it was I did like well [TS]

00:25:43   what happened it's not to date where [TS]

00:25:44   does it go it's not under screen is it [TS]

00:25:45   on the back is it on the power button it [TS]

00:25:47   like you know because more things were [TS]

00:25:50   up for grabs [TS]

00:25:50   if this pretend that 10 doesn't exist [TS]

00:25:53   and this is just the eight you know [TS]

00:25:55   there there wouldn't have been a weird [TS]

00:25:58   rumor about touch ID being in the power [TS]

00:25:59   button on the eight because they'd be [TS]

00:26:00   like well touching is where it always is [TS]

00:26:01   like look there's the phone like there [TS]

00:26:02   you know only a few things are changing [TS]

00:26:05   so the bigger the break from the past [TS]

00:26:08   the more possibility is for random [TS]

00:26:11   guesses and rumors and misheard things [TS]

00:26:12   because so much more seems possible [TS]

00:26:14   right so you've entertained it as a [TS]

00:26:16   possibility because you know who knows [TS]

00:26:18   what they'll do and then of course the [TS]

00:26:19   software League sort of you know refine [TS]

00:26:21   that all that well we'll see you next it [TS]

00:26:22   was presumably next phone they will not [TS]

00:26:25   have a catastrophic so for a leak like [TS]

00:26:27   this and we'll get to play the game all [TS]

00:26:29   the way up to the end where we'll have [TS]

00:26:30   you know there will be more constrained [TS]

00:26:32   that there won't be suffering you know [TS]

00:26:33   that the the one after the ten is not [TS]

00:26:35   going to be as a radical departure as [TS]

00:26:37   the ten is from the seven right and [TS]

00:26:39   we'll have a bunch of different [TS]

00:26:40   competing theories and we'll see how we [TS]

00:26:43   we do on them but it still seems like [TS]

00:26:45   you know a couple months before our [TS]

00:26:47   iPhone time next year we will have [TS]

00:26:49   measured drawings of exactly what the [TS]

00:26:51   phone would look like maybe we won't [TS]

00:26:52   know the exact colors in names though so [TS]

00:26:54   kept that going for us [TS]

00:26:55   all we know is that it'll be a new shade [TS]

00:26:57   of space gray yeah will they ever run [TS]

00:27:00   out they should just just line them up [TS]

00:27:02   and see you know when do they have to go [TS]

00:27:04   from like you know 8-bit color or 16-bit [TS]

00:27:05   color contain all contain all the space [TS]

00:27:08   Gray's all this is to say let me tell [TS]

00:27:11   you about my iPhone I was just about to [TS]

00:27:13   add so I first time I ever did this [TS]

00:27:18   getting a phone for my wife we both end [TS]

00:27:20   up waking up because really when one [TS]

00:27:21   person wakes up like look everyone's [TS]

00:27:22   gonna be up I was very unlucky in the [TS]

00:27:27   CBN lottery the store did not come up [TS]

00:27:30   for with me for me for like 10 or 12 [TS]

00:27:33   minutes [TS]

00:27:33   well I eventually got through on first [TS]

00:27:36   was actually the website so I'm about [TS]

00:27:38   the category of one of the people where [TS]

00:27:39   furiously forced quitting and [TS]

00:27:41   relaunching the app on you know on Wi-Fi [TS]

00:27:44   and LTE did not let me get to it I got [TS]

00:27:46   it first in the website but because my [TS]

00:27:48   wife was also doing this on multiple [TS]

00:27:50   devices she's doing it on her Mac and [TS]

00:27:52   her phone before I went through the auto [TS]

00:27:55   process right to the end because I knew [TS]

00:27:56   what she wanted but before I hit the [TS]

00:27:57   button about that point I had walked [TS]

00:27:59   downstairs and wanted to check are you [TS]

00:28:01   are you in the same process it turns out [TS]

00:28:03   she was she was right at the by step as [TS]

00:28:05   well so I didn't actually pull the [TS]

00:28:06   trigger on my by she pulled the trigger [TS]

00:28:07   on hers two to three weeks that's when [TS]

00:28:11   my ship date is so I did not get day one [TS]

00:28:13   I was unlucky in the unintentional CDN [TS]

00:28:17   lottery but two or three weeks it's not [TS]

00:28:19   that bad you know she was too happy with [TS]

00:28:21   it because she was also worried that it [TS]

00:28:22   would be really a long time and she [TS]

00:28:23   didn't want a way to relive time because [TS]

00:28:24   he's kind of getting sick of her phone [TS]

00:28:26   so two or three weeks is acceptable to [TS]

00:28:28   her oh I forgot yeah she got the big one [TS]

00:28:30   and we did a Verizon and they did the [TS]

00:28:32   thing where it's like we're having [TS]

00:28:34   trouble contacting your carrier which is [TS]

00:28:35   a vast improvement I tweeted you know a [TS]

00:28:39   tweeted that might have seemed like [TS]

00:28:40   snark but wasn't I called it progress [TS]

00:28:42   this is progress this is better than [TS]

00:28:44   before it's still sad that they you know [TS]

00:28:45   the carriers suck and they can't make [TS]

00:28:47   this work but at least it doesn't stop [TS]

00:28:49   the process but there was you know a [TS]

00:28:51   good 24 hours of fretting because you go [TS]

00:28:54   through the process and it's like well I [TS]

00:28:56   could kind of the carrier but don't [TS]

00:28:58   worry your phone is reserved and you go [TS]

00:28:59   to bed you know 3:30 thinking [TS]

00:29:01   everything's fine right but then the [TS]

00:29:04   next day you start to worry as everyone [TS]

00:29:05   else says look at my order look at my [TS]

00:29:07   ship date blah blah blah blah and you [TS]

00:29:09   have nothing you just have a screen that [TS]

00:29:11   you saw last night at 3:30 in the [TS]

00:29:12   morning that said you had a phone but [TS]

00:29:14   there's no proof that even happened [TS]

00:29:16   right and you have an email that says oh [TS]

00:29:19   we'll contact you when it's time for you [TS]

00:29:21   to complete your order alright but then [TS]

00:29:23   you're just waiting for an email it's [TS]

00:29:24   like so when when are you gonna email me [TS]

00:29:25   and tell me I can complete my order then [TS]

00:29:26   you start worrying they're gonna email [TS]

00:29:28   me and tell me I can complete my order [TS]

00:29:29   and that's gonna count as my order time [TS]

00:29:31   like that I didn't reserve a spot in [TS]

00:29:32   line at 3 a.m. but it's really just [TS]

00:29:33   gonna be when I get the email especially [TS]

00:29:35   since they say you'll have 24 hours to [TS]

00:29:36   complete your order so there's a little [TS]

00:29:37   bit of time pressure and it was a really [TS]

00:29:40   long time like everybody else had gotten [TS]

00:29:42   their orders and they gotten their dates [TS]

00:29:44   and everything we still hadn't received [TS]

00:29:45   the email but finally towards the end of [TS]

00:29:46   the day the next day got an email [TS]

00:29:49   completed the order and that's when we [TS]

00:29:50   saw the the two to three week thing so [TS]

00:29:52   that's not the best system it's a little [TS]

00:29:55   bit nerve-wracking I would I would like [TS]

00:29:56   it if I could actually go through the [TS]

00:29:58   process and give them the money and [TS]

00:29:59   complete the order and just say just [TS]

00:30:01   settle up figure it out with Verizon [TS]

00:30:03   later because they're obviously already [TS]

00:30:04   reserving me a spot I don't see why I [TS]

00:30:06   have to be involved with the the time [TS]

00:30:08   delayed retry right Apple can do that on [TS]

00:30:10   their in so that was a little bit [TS]

00:30:12   nerve-wracking but it all came out well [TS]

00:30:14   man we are sponsored this week by jams [TS]

00:30:18   now jams now helps you manage your Apple [TS]

00:30:20   devices from anywhere go to JAMF dot-com [TS]

00:30:24   slash ATP to create your free account [TS]

00:30:26   today when you first start a business [TS]

00:30:28   it's pretty easy to keep track of just [TS]

00:30:30   your computer and just your phone but as [TS]

00:30:33   you grow this doesn't scale very well [TS]

00:30:35   you start to buy tech for employees and [TS]

00:30:37   it gets harder to keep track of [TS]

00:30:39   everybody's devices this covers Macs [TS]

00:30:41   iPhones and iPads figuring out how to [TS]

00:30:44   for example secure the iPad that your [TS]

00:30:46   sales rep just lost can be pretty tough [TS]

00:30:49   especially when you're in different [TS]

00:30:50   locations maybe your distributive [TS]

00:30:51   business around the world so champ now [TS]

00:30:53   makes that and a whole lot more so much [TS]

00:30:57   easier you [TS]

00:30:58   configure settings you can protect [TS]

00:30:59   sensitive information you can even lock [TS]

00:31:01   or wipe your devices remotely from [TS]

00:31:04   anywhere Jam for now secures your stuff [TS]

00:31:07   they secure your devices so you can [TS]

00:31:08   focus on your business instead and they [TS]

00:31:11   bring all this to you with no IT [TS]

00:31:13   expertise needed this stuff can be [TS]

00:31:15   really complicated Jam makes it really [TS]

00:31:18   really easy for you [TS]

00:31:19   so our listeners can start securing your [TS]

00:31:21   businesses today by setting up your [TS]

00:31:23   first three devices for free with Jam [TS]

00:31:25   add more for just two bucks a month per [TS]

00:31:28   device so see for yourself create a free [TS]

00:31:30   account today at Jam comm slash ATP [TS]

00:31:33   that's JAMF dot-com / ATP thank you so [TS]

00:31:38   much to Jam for now for sponsoring our [TS]

00:31:39   show [TS]

00:31:40   jams now manage your Apple devices from [TS]

00:31:42   anywhere so tell me about your iMac it's [TS]

00:31:48   back so here's here's what happened so [TS]

00:31:52   you know the Genius Bar or Grove or [TS]

00:31:54   forest whatever had it for a little less [TS]

00:31:57   than a week in in a little less than a [TS]

00:32:00   week they replaced the panel that's it [TS]

00:32:03   oh and then the very last day somebody [TS]

00:32:07   called me to ask if they could format my [TS]

00:32:09   hard drive even though I told them when [TS]

00:32:11   I dropped it off yes I have everything [TS]

00:32:12   backed up you can you can replace it or [TS]

00:32:14   format it if you need to they said they [TS]

00:32:16   needed to format my hard drive because [TS]

00:32:18   there was some bad data on the platters [TS]

00:32:21   by the way this is an SSD only iMac [TS]

00:32:24   there were some bad data on my platters [TS]

00:32:27   and that was causing my GPU overheating [TS]

00:32:30   issue and that they had to reformat the [TS]

00:32:33   hard drive to get rid of the bad blocks [TS]

00:32:35   on my platters and I was just like [TS]

00:32:40   really like can you explain a little bit [TS]

00:32:42   a little bit more and and every every [TS]

00:32:44   explanation I got was worse than the [TS]

00:32:46   last one [TS]

00:32:47   and I didn't I didn't pull it like the [TS]

00:32:49   I'm a nerd card I didn't I didn't tell [TS]

00:32:51   them how wrong they were yeah why why [TS]

00:32:53   did you bother pressing them on that did [TS]

00:32:55   you think there was a real explanation [TS]

00:32:57   hiding under there you just want to hear [TS]

00:32:59   them squirm as they try to like rephrase [TS]

00:33:01   it another way well and I was trying [TS]

00:33:03   because I was like I was like how can [TS]

00:33:04   that affect the GPU and there and okay I [TS]

00:33:08   said GPU every single time [TS]

00:33:11   about this fan every time like look the [TS]

00:33:13   GPU runs too hot I monitor I can tell [TS]

00:33:16   the temperature like it runs too hot [TS]

00:33:17   then the fan spins up well it's doing [TS]

00:33:19   almost nothing ok the GPU and I kept I [TS]

00:33:23   said it when I dropped it off I said it [TS]

00:33:24   when they were doing testing I said it [TS]

00:33:26   everywhere every single time that that [TS]

00:33:29   they set it back to me they said oh this [TS]

00:33:32   is why your fans running hot I'm like no [TS]

00:33:34   no it's more detailed than that trust me [TS]

00:33:36   this I'm trying to help you figure this [TS]

00:33:38   out like no they didn't they didn't hear [TS]

00:33:41   it so you know look I had a mediocre [TS]

00:33:43   experience right the people were very [TS]

00:33:45   nice they didn't fix any of my problems [TS]

00:33:47   except for the screen oh and now I have [TS]

00:33:49   a hot green pixel in the middle screen [TS]

00:33:50   so you know I'm not gonna have them [TS]

00:33:53   touch it again yeah this is why I don't [TS]

00:33:55   like whatever people whenever I complain [TS]

00:33:57   about a problem with hardware I have and [TS]

00:33:59   people like why don't you guys bring it [TS]

00:34:00   in for repair this is why because it [TS]

00:34:03   doesn't usually get the problems fixed [TS]

00:34:05   and you know sometimes if it's easy like [TS]

00:34:08   when I had a bad lightning port on my [TS]

00:34:09   phone that was easy [TS]

00:34:10   that they swapped it out done great [TS]

00:34:12   experience but when it's like a nuanced [TS]

00:34:15   issue with a desktop computer you know I [TS]

00:34:18   had to haul it there go without a [TS]

00:34:20   desktop for a week get it back put all [TS]

00:34:23   my data back on because they formatted [TS]

00:34:24   the drive for no reason fan still runs [TS]

00:34:26   too fast when the GPU runs hot for no [TS]

00:34:28   apparent reason [TS]

00:34:29   it wasn't bad data on my platters in my [TS]

00:34:31   SSD and surprise surprise and so you [TS]

00:34:35   know I appreciate it that they tried but [TS]

00:34:38   this is why I don't do this usually I [TS]

00:34:40   usually take the opposite approach where [TS]

00:34:42   if you're like once the seal is broken [TS]

00:34:43   once I've gone to and from the store [TS]

00:34:46   once I'm going to continue to go back [TS]

00:34:48   until as Generac would say I get [TS]

00:34:50   satisfaction display back three times so [TS]

00:34:53   if I if I they replace the screen and it [TS]

00:34:54   came back with a hot green sub-pixel [TS]

00:34:56   that would go back a mealy just for the [TS]

00:34:58   screen there's like look I've gone [TS]

00:35:00   through this asshole to get the screen [TS]

00:35:01   I'm gonna keep going through until I get [TS]

00:35:04   a perfect screen back unless have some [TS]

00:35:05   policy is about it I'm not doing it but [TS]

00:35:07   I don't know I don't know deals but I [TS]

00:35:08   would try right and my attempt to [TS]

00:35:11   explain the erasing of the disc like [TS]

00:35:13   maybe like the the cutting the ends off [TS]

00:35:17   the roast reason behind this poor person [TS]

00:35:19   trying to explain to you why they want [TS]

00:35:20   to erase your hard drive I have had many [TS]

00:35:23   times in the past [TS]

00:35:25   problems that make the computer do weird [TS]

00:35:27   stuff that have to do with like [TS]

00:35:28   corrupted libraries somewhere right so [TS]

00:35:30   like some some sort of file on disk does [TS]

00:35:33   not checksum correctly it has the wrong [TS]

00:35:34   data in it who knows why [TS]

00:35:35   like HFS+ errors you know could actually [TS]

00:35:38   be a hardware related failure who knows [TS]

00:35:41   and you say like well how it why would [TS]

00:35:43   that manifest in the GPU getting hot [TS]

00:35:46   there's enough tiny little things all [TS]

00:35:48   over the place [TS]

00:35:49   loadable pieces of code and various [TS]

00:35:51   library files and stuff that it's [TS]

00:35:54   possible that one of them could be [TS]

00:35:57   loaded and only a certain code path hits [TS]

00:36:00   the corrupted part and that causes it to [TS]

00:36:02   crash and then immediately relaunches [TS]

00:36:03   and that happens over and over and over [TS]

00:36:04   again and that causes some subsystem to [TS]

00:36:07   work harder than it should because it's [TS]

00:36:09   basically you know probabilistically [TS]

00:36:11   constantly crashing depending on when [TS]

00:36:13   the code path that hits the corrupted [TS]

00:36:14   part of the library is hit and you don't [TS]

00:36:17   see that and except maybe a in a console [TS]

00:36:19   line somewhere if you're lucky and that [TS]

00:36:21   would cause temperature go up so that's [TS]

00:36:22   my most charitable interpretation of why [TS]

00:36:24   there might be a legit reason for them [TS]

00:36:25   to erase your disk although that's why a [TS]

00:36:28   lot of people say I did a combo updater [TS]

00:36:30   and it fixed everything like just [TS]

00:36:31   reinstalling the OS often fixes it to [TS]

00:36:32   because it'll replace that library with [TS]

00:36:34   the correct version of it again stuff [TS]

00:36:36   like that has happened it probably [TS]

00:36:38   doesn't explain a temperature specific [TS]

00:36:40   thing I would expect to see more crashes [TS]

00:36:42   or whatever but I'll bet that that [TS]

00:36:44   issues like that are one of the reasons [TS]

00:36:45   why they've routinely wanted to erase [TS]

00:36:47   your drive just to reduce the number of [TS]

00:36:48   variables essentially like they should [TS]

00:36:50   have just said we don't know but we're [TS]

00:36:52   out of ideas and this is always the last [TS]

00:36:54   thing we try and sometimes it fixes it [TS]

00:36:55   so it's worthwhile and so they did it [TS]

00:36:59   okay so we had somebody write in who is [TS]

00:37:02   an anonymous Apple care advisor and they [TS]

00:37:05   said that they were servicing a 20-17 [TS]

00:37:09   MacBook Pro 13 inch for spacebar that [TS]

00:37:11   stopped functioning Apple care had [TS]

00:37:14   determined the issue was related to [TS]

00:37:15   accidental damage and therefore was not [TS]

00:37:17   covered under warranty they held their [TS]

00:37:19   MacBook Pro for a recoat price of 475 [TS]

00:37:22   dollars [TS]

00:37:23   holy smokes although the customer [TS]

00:37:27   disputes prying the key off in an effort [TS]

00:37:28   to fix the issue herself I don't doubt [TS]

00:37:30   that she probably did the point is our [TS]

00:37:32   customers would have no reason to try [TS]

00:37:33   and perform surgery on their brand-new [TS]

00:37:35   laptops with their car keys if the [TS]

00:37:37   keyboards worked rely [TS]

00:37:38   in the first place $500 to fix this [TS]

00:37:41   keyboard that is bananas I thought this [TS]

00:37:45   was a good story because it shows just [TS]

00:37:46   how things can go wrong thus far we've [TS]

00:37:48   been talking about it like oh we don't [TS]

00:37:50   really know what the reliability issue [TS]

00:37:51   is but these things are also under [TS]

00:37:52   warranty and eventually they won't be [TS]

00:37:53   and it will be worse but this is you [TS]

00:37:56   know this is example of good Apple [TS]

00:37:57   customer service in the end but sort of [TS]

00:38:01   a trap for customers like if this [TS]

00:38:04   happens to you you get a new laptop and [TS]

00:38:05   the spacebar stops working and you [TS]

00:38:08   decide to try to pry the key cap off now [TS]

00:38:09   maybe you're just frustrated maybe [TS]

00:38:10   you're impatient maybe you don't want a [TS]

00:38:12   wallet bother taking this store maybe [TS]

00:38:13   you've pried the key caps off past Apple [TS]

00:38:15   laptops and have fixed it yourself by [TS]

00:38:17   blowing stuff out or whatever but either [TS]

00:38:18   way if you do this and like and you know [TS]

00:38:22   and when you do with these through these [TS]

00:38:24   new keyboards there's like no way to get [TS]

00:38:27   it back on successfully like you're [TS]

00:38:28   doomed the prying off the key gaps is [TS]

00:38:30   not a thing you should do it's not even [TS]

00:38:31   a thing that Apple repair centers do [TS]

00:38:33   that's why they have to replace the [TS]

00:38:34   whole top of your computer right if you [TS]

00:38:36   do that and then bring it into the Apple [TS]

00:38:38   store they're gonna say well I see your [TS]

00:38:42   problem you pried off your spacebar and [TS]

00:38:44   that's not covered under warranty [TS]

00:38:46   because you essentially damaged your own [TS]

00:38:48   computer and if you said no no I've only [TS]

00:38:50   pried it off because before the spacebar [TS]

00:38:52   wasn't working you know by the letter of [TS]

00:38:55   the of the Apple Apple care laws like no [TS]

00:38:58   if you pry the key or if you try to [TS]

00:39:00   repair your own computer and mess it up [TS]

00:39:02   we don't pay for that now you know the [TS]

00:39:05   reason this is good Apple customer [TS]

00:39:07   service is that the person involved was [TS]

00:39:09   you know able to make an exception and [TS]

00:39:11   override the repair center whatever [TS]

00:39:12   likely the genius understands like the [TS]

00:39:14   only reason your prize is off because it [TS]

00:39:15   was broken I don't think you're sitting [TS]

00:39:16   around deciding to pry off your key caps [TS]

00:39:17   for the hell of it right and so they did [TS]

00:39:19   the right thing and I'm letting this get [TS]

00:39:21   repaired under warranty but when the [TS]

00:39:24   warranty runs out like what we just go [TS]

00:39:25   wait for the first person to have a [TS]

00:39:27   stuck key and exactly the the time of [TS]

00:39:30   their warranty runs out and realize [TS]

00:39:32   stuck key equals four hundred and [TS]

00:39:33   seventy-five dollars and that's going to [TS]

00:39:35   be a very very sad person a person who [TS]

00:39:38   will probably start considering how [TS]

00:39:39   convenient it might be to use their [TS]

00:39:40   laptop without ever touching the [TS]

00:39:41   keyboard on it maybe they are in the [TS]

00:39:43   market for a new Mac Mini I don't [TS]

00:39:47   remember which show it was I heard this [TS]

00:39:49   on but did you hear that [TS]

00:39:51   repairing the back glass on an iPhone 10 [TS]

00:39:55   is something like $500 yeah it's because [TS]

00:39:57   it's it's like a full replacement cost [TS]

00:40:00   basically so yeah it's like it's like [TS]

00:40:01   over $500 and notice AppleCare cost $200 [TS]

00:40:04   now on on the iPhone 10 and did you guys [TS]

00:40:08   all get AppleCare I did not I who were [TS]

00:40:12   living dangerously I buy it for tips [TS]

00:40:15   because she wants the peace of mind of [TS]

00:40:17   knowing that and she does drop her phone [TS]

00:40:18   occasionally we do have cases we have [TS]

00:40:20   yet to break one but still for her as we [TS]

00:40:24   wanted to buy it because that makes me [TS]

00:40:25   feel better for mine I I never have and [TS]

00:40:29   my policy has been you know because now [TS]

00:40:31   Affleck cares like I think it's like 130 [TS]

00:40:34   or 140 ish for the regular iPhone eights [TS]

00:40:37   and then for the iPhone 10 it's 200 am I [TS]

00:40:40   thinking here is the first time I have [TS]

00:40:43   to have a very expensive repair I will [TS]

00:40:46   reconsider my policy of having not spent [TS]

00:40:48   $200 every year up until that point but [TS]

00:40:51   until it happens unless that happens I'm [TS]

00:40:54   gonna keep not spending $200 to protect [TS]

00:40:56   the phone that I don't necessarily need [TS]

00:40:57   to be protected and well you know we'll [TS]

00:41:00   let it ride from there I'm the kind of [TS]

00:41:01   person who I don't really drop my stuff [TS]

00:41:03   like all I've never dropped gadgets [TS]

00:41:05   before or like I think I've dropped a [TS]

00:41:07   phone in the total of time that I've had [TS]

00:41:10   iPhones the entire last 10 years I think [TS]

00:41:14   I've dropped it maybe twice and neither [TS]

00:41:17   time it was severely damaged so I hope I [TS]

00:41:20   don't need it and if I start needing it [TS]

00:41:22   then I'll eat that first repair as a [TS]

00:41:24   life lesson and I'll start getting it [TS]

00:41:25   then until it happens I'm saving 200 [TS]

00:41:27   bucks a year I did get AppleCare plus on [TS]

00:41:31   my iPhone 7 and if you recall I dropped [TS]

00:41:35   it when I was running with it because [TS]

00:41:36   I'm an idiot and that was my first my [TS]

00:41:39   first iPhone casualty I have also [TS]

00:41:41   developed a deep scratch in the screen [TS]

00:41:43   since that happened I have no earthly [TS]

00:41:44   idea how so the good news is if I get [TS]

00:41:48   this repaired a second time the Apple [TS]

00:41:49   Care will have paid for itself but this [TS]

00:41:51   is the first phone I've run in a long [TS]

00:41:53   time without a case and two hundred [TS]

00:41:55   dollars on top of 1,200 or whatever I [TS]

00:41:57   paid is a lot of money so I have a [TS]

00:42:00   leather case that will be a few days [TS]

00:42:02   late behind my phone because I just [TS]

00:42:04   ordered it today [TS]

00:42:05   and I think I'm going to go back to [TS]

00:42:07   having a leather case and hopefully not [TS]

00:42:08   destroying my phone we are sponsored [TS]

00:43:52   thank you so much to cash for sponsoring [TS]

00:43:54   our show John it is all coming up [TS]

00:44:00   millhouse with regard to the Apple TV [TS]

00:44:01   tell us about this yeah so a bunch of [TS]

00:44:05   announced essentially announcements from [TS]

00:44:07   Apple because they have videos this [TS]

00:44:09   strange sort of out of time not at WWDC [TS]

00:44:12   but very much like WWC videos explaining [TS]

00:44:15   some of the new AP eyes in TV OS [TS]

00:44:17   11-point [TS]

00:44:18   - which is not yet released but [TS]

00:44:20   presumably will be in beta soon so the [TS]

00:44:22   very first thing I did was went out to [TS]

00:44:24   my Apple TV and turned on beta software [TS]

00:44:27   updates which is the thing that you can [TS]

00:44:29   do if you sign up for the beta program [TS]

00:44:30   you get a menu thing that says in the [TS]

00:44:31   software update thing do you want to [TS]

00:44:32   also consider beta update I said yes and [TS]

00:44:35   I said please update me and it did an [TS]

00:44:37   update but then when I rebooted I was [TS]

00:44:39   still in 11.1 and now every time I check [TS]

00:44:42   for an update it says I have the latest [TS]

00:44:43   version so I do not have 11.2 I don't [TS]

00:44:45   know if anybody has it may be that beta [TS]

00:44:47   is not out yet but anyway why do I want [TS]

00:44:49   11.2 well a couple of reasons first [TS]

00:44:51   there is a new API called AV display [TS]

00:44:54   manager [TS]

00:44:56   I shouldn't even know if it's new API [TS]

00:44:57   unfortunately I have not had time to [TS]

00:44:58   watch this video but this there's new [TS]

00:45:01   api's that allow you as an app developer [TS]

00:45:03   to switch video display modes [TS]

00:45:08   confusingly there's a second set of [TS]

00:45:10   screenshots showing you know what the TV [TS]

00:45:13   OS thing will look like where there are [TS]

00:45:15   options now to say automatically match [TS]

00:45:18   the frame rate of the source video and [TS]

00:45:20   automatically match the HD arnis of the [TS]

00:45:23   source video and you can turn them both [TS]

00:45:25   on and for a little while I was confused [TS]

00:45:28   well which is it is it that application [TS]

00:45:31   developers have to update their apps to [TS]

00:45:32   switch modes or is it that Apple TV will [TS]

00:45:35   simply detect the framerate and quality [TS]

00:45:38   of the video that's displaying an Apple [TS]

00:45:40   TV you'll switch modes as far as I can [TS]

00:45:42   tell it is you need both for this to [TS]

00:45:44   happen [TS]

00:45:44   developers need to update their apps to [TS]

00:45:46   use a new API and the new API won't [TS]

00:45:49   actually switch your mode unless the [TS]

00:45:50   preference is set in your Apple TV to [TS]

00:45:52   say hey if an application says that it [TS]

00:45:55   wants to change the mode to 24 hours per [TS]

00:45:57   second or whatever or some multiple of [TS]

00:45:59   that allow it to do it again I haven't [TS]

00:46:02   actually installed this beta because [TS]

00:46:03   they won't send it to me so I'm not [TS]

00:46:04   entirely sure so I'm just going off [TS]

00:46:05   several articles on this topic we'll put [TS]

00:46:08   a link in the show notes they are so I [TS]

00:46:09   can go home which I think just [TS]

00:46:10   summarizes the information that's [TS]

00:46:11   provided but anyway this is all good [TS]

00:46:13   news the good news is you will not have [TS]

00:46:15   to go to that menu and pick from umpteen [TS]

00:46:18   different formats every time you're [TS]

00:46:19   going to play a video which of course [TS]

00:46:21   you know the exact frame rate for and [TS]

00:46:23   it's also good news with people with HDR [TS]

00:46:24   TVs because previously apparently it was [TS]

00:46:26   if you turn to HDR on and played some [TS]

00:46:28   non HDR video it would try to display it [TS]

00:46:30   in HDR and make it look [TS]

00:46:31   gross which is just terrible I didn't [TS]

00:46:33   know that because I don't have an HDR TV [TS]

00:46:34   my only fear now is that these features [TS]

00:46:38   will come and they will be 4k only not [TS]

00:46:41   Apple TV 4k only but will only be [TS]

00:46:44   available if you have a 4k television [TS]

00:46:45   because right now I can't tell the Apple [TS]

00:46:47   TV output at some optimal 24 Hertz to my [TS]

00:46:52   television because I have a standard [TS]

00:46:54   definition a non 4k television and I [TS]

00:46:58   don't have a 24 Hertz option or any [TS]

00:47:00   multiple theraph which is a shame if you [TS]

00:47:01   have a 4k TV you do I'm hoping all this [TS]

00:47:04   mode switching and everything is not [TS]

00:47:06   confined to 4k like these other settings [TS]

00:47:09   are so we'll see but I'm excited by it [TS]

00:47:11   things are going in the right direction [TS]

00:47:12   all right let's ask a TP drew wants to [TS]

00:47:15   know what do you recommend for antivirus [TS]

00:47:17   on High Sierra don't run it don't know [TS]

00:47:19   yeah that someone asked me this at work [TS]

00:47:22   too and the reason I put this question [TS]

00:47:23   in there is that this is a surprisingly [TS]

00:47:24   common question especially for new Mac [TS]

00:47:26   users what should I get for antivirus my [TS]

00:47:29   answer to all these people is do not [TS]

00:47:30   install antivirus software on your Mac [TS]

00:47:32   maybe that sounds terrible and maybe [TS]

00:47:34   people think I'm an old fogy and really [TS]

00:47:35   in this modern day and age you need [TS]

00:47:36   antivirus software and bla bla but from [TS]

00:47:39   my experience over many many years being [TS]

00:47:42   forced to run many different kinds of [TS]

00:47:44   antivirus software at work I hate all of [TS]

00:47:46   them and all of them made my Mac worse [TS]

00:47:47   and at home I have never ever ever ever [TS]

00:47:50   run antivirus software all iMacs and as [TS]

00:47:54   far as I'm aware I have never had any [TS]

00:47:57   problems with viruses so my [TS]

00:47:59   recommendation is do not run and do [TS]

00:48:01   virus software on your Mac it's all bad [TS]

00:48:03   Marco any other thoughts I think exactly [TS]

00:48:06   what John says - the work experience [TS]

00:48:08   part yeah I mean at this point I would [TS]

00:48:12   say that antivirus software on your Mac [TS]

00:48:14   I think probably is a bigger threat of [TS]

00:48:18   itself being malware than any malware [TS]

00:48:20   that you would find and even when it's [TS]

00:48:23   working correctly not that it's malware [TS]

00:48:24   but it messes with your computer it like [TS]

00:48:26   it makes it slow it makes it annoying it [TS]

00:48:28   makes things not work that we're [TS]

00:48:29   supposed to work the headaches you will [TS]

00:48:31   get from the antivirus software itself [TS]

00:48:34   far outweigh the supposed to protection [TS]

00:48:36   that it and honestly it's not gonna [TS]

00:48:37   protect you the real question is like [TS]

00:48:39   just find a long time magazine maybe not [TS]

00:48:41   me like you know 1984 Mac user but but [TS]

00:48:44   you know humble brat right I'm just [TS]

00:48:46   saying like find someone who's been [TS]

00:48:48   using her Mac for years and ask them [TS]

00:48:49   what do you run for antivirus like can [TS]

00:48:51   you find a Mac user who has not run [TS]

00:48:54   antivirus and has been you know overrun [TS]

00:48:56   by viruses like Marco Casey have you [TS]

00:48:58   ever run antivirus software on your Mac [TS]

00:49:00   my work computer but that's because it's [TS]

00:49:02   compulsory not because I choose it but I [TS]

00:49:05   mean your home one nope even when I had [TS]

00:49:08   a work computer I didn't have you ever [TS]

00:49:11   had any problem with viruses I've never [TS]

00:49:13   not only have I never had a problem with [TS]

00:49:14   a Mac virus I've never even heard of [TS]

00:49:17   anybody else having a problem with one [TS]

00:49:19   ever saying yeah I mean more likely it's [TS]

00:49:21   gonna be you know social engineering and [TS]

00:49:23   getting you to click on some button [TS]

00:49:24   you're not supposed to know that you [TS]

00:49:26   know and not to say there aren't volun [TS]

00:49:27   abilities Mac's are totally vulnerable [TS]

00:49:28   to malware and viruses 100% and humans [TS]

00:49:31   are completely vulnerable to social [TS]

00:49:33   engineering and things that trick you in [TS]

00:49:35   to clicking something you're not [TS]

00:49:36   supposed to do right but the question [TS]

00:49:37   wasn't like our Mac's horrible the virus [TS]

00:49:39   they are the question was should I [TS]

00:49:42   install antivirus software and the [TS]

00:49:43   answer that is no because that software [TS]

00:49:45   is bad and makes your Mac worse now [TS]

00:49:48   remember that Apple does have a very [TS]

00:49:50   rudimentary anti-malware stuff that [TS]

00:49:52   you're getting with your note or not [TS]

00:49:53   they do push updates to it when they [TS]

00:49:55   identify new malware I think it's not [TS]

00:49:57   gonna save you from everything but it's [TS]

00:49:58   not as if you're completely unprotected [TS]

00:50:00   so this next one was an email submission [TS]

00:50:03   and I thought it was really interesting [TS]

00:50:05   Charlie Ullman rights if iOS and Mac OS [TS]

00:50:08   were available to install and integrate [TS]

00:50:10   with any hardware would you still use an [TS]

00:50:12   iPhone and a Mac and he continues for [TS]

00:50:14   this thought experiment assume that it [TS]

00:50:17   works well on all devices none of the [TS]

00:50:19   windows driver crap software updates [TS]

00:50:21   would happen just as regularly none of [TS]

00:50:23   the Android fragmentation crap you could [TS]

00:50:25   use any of the new hardware on other [TS]

00:50:27   devices without issue [TS]

00:50:28   NFC Microsoft 10 and dial Google pixel [TS]

00:50:31   squeeze etc and the prices don't change [TS]

00:50:34   meaning the Galaxy S II wouldn't cost as [TS]

00:50:36   much as an iPhone the surface book [TS]

00:50:37   wouldn't cost as much as a touch of our [TS]

00:50:39   Mac Mac Book etc I've thought about this [TS]

00:50:42   for several days now because I was [TS]

00:50:45   wanting to added this to the to the show [TS]

00:50:47   notes and I don't think I have any [TS]

00:50:49   really strong answers because I really [TS]

00:50:52   really do think for me that the best [TS]

00:50:56   Hardware out there is Apple [TS]

00:50:57   hardware I would probably at least flirt [TS]

00:51:01   with a thing pad especially that retro [TS]

00:51:04   one that just came out mmm mmm I know [TS]

00:51:06   John is getting really sick to his [TS]

00:51:08   stomach hearing me to talk about this [TS]

00:51:10   but man I think that looks good but [TS]

00:51:13   anyway I don't think I've ever seen a [TS]

00:51:15   phone that I've that I've longed for and [TS]

00:51:18   I don't really ever see computers that [TS]

00:51:21   I'm terribly enthusiastic about outside [TS]

00:51:24   of what comes from Apple and I don't [TS]

00:51:26   know if I'm just if it's Stockholm [TS]

00:51:28   Syndrome at this point or what but other [TS]

00:51:30   than maybe a think pad I don't think [TS]

00:51:32   there's anything but what about you John [TS]

00:51:34   I would definitely use non-apple [TS]

00:51:38   hardware because I would get basically [TS]

00:51:40   the modern equivalent of my 2008 Mac [TS]

00:51:42   priority got a big computer with room [TS]

00:51:44   for lots of stuff inside including a [TS]

00:51:45   really big gaming video card and Apple [TS]

00:51:48   doesn't sell anything like that so I [TS]

00:51:49   would have gotten that long ago like [TS]

00:51:51   that's what I'm waiting around for us [TS]

00:51:52   that you know a Mac Pro that I want to [TS]

00:51:54   buy if I could get third-party hardware [TS]

00:51:56   and run Mac OS and not have to deal with [TS]

00:51:58   any of the you know hackintosh stuff or [TS]

00:52:00   whatever yes I definitely would for [TS]

00:52:03   phones I also have never seen a phone [TS]

00:52:06   that has made me think I would rather [TS]

00:52:09   have that hardware than my iPhone [TS]

00:52:10   hardware even it was down to something [TS]

00:52:12   like mini USB versus lighting that was [TS]

00:52:15   no contest and us PC versus lighting I [TS]

00:52:17   think I still kind of prefer lighting so [TS]

00:52:19   I don't think there's any hardware that [TS]

00:52:22   would tempted me especially now that we [TS]

00:52:25   have like the sevens the the six and [TS]

00:52:26   seven size phone and we'll see what I [TS]

00:52:28   think of the 10 when it gets here but [TS]

00:52:31   for my desktop Mac computer in the [TS]

00:52:34   absence of a Mac Pro that suits my needs [TS]

00:52:36   I would definitely be running [TS]

00:52:38   third-party hardware Marco I've never [TS]

00:52:42   seen another phone that I that I [TS]

00:52:44   actually thought like I would like to [TS]

00:52:46   stop using my iPhone and go use that [TS]

00:52:48   please it has never come close I was [TS]

00:52:50   very impressed when I saw the what is [TS]

00:52:53   the Samsung the s8 the one the what not [TS]

00:52:56   the not the note but the one that came [TS]

00:52:58   out like six months ago that was [TS]

00:52:59   edge-to-edge ish like that one I was [TS]

00:53:02   very impressed when I saw that but it [TS]

00:53:04   wasn't so compelling that I like I want [TS]

00:53:06   to lose everything I know about the [TS]

00:53:07   hardware now this is a great question in [TS]

00:53:09   the sense that it assumes that we can [TS]

00:53:11   still use this [TS]

00:53:11   use the software that we like you know [TS]

00:53:13   all the Apple software because that [TS]

00:53:14   really is like you know that that's that [TS]

00:53:16   that's what matters more like ultimately [TS]

00:53:18   I would take Apple hardware that makes [TS]

00:53:22   me miserable before I would leave Mac OS [TS]

00:53:25   and iOS for the alternatives so it's a [TS]

00:53:30   good question for the phones yeah no way [TS]

00:53:32   for you no tablets no for laptops maybe [TS]

00:53:37   I think I might consider using PC [TS]

00:53:40   laptops especially oh you absolutely [TS]

00:53:42   would after all this kvetching about the [TS]

00:53:44   keyboard you absolutely would go to a [TS]

00:53:47   different laptop o [TS]

00:53:48   PC laptops are kind of ugly though well [TS]

00:53:50   I don't care about the look so much as [TS]

00:53:52   as the functionality for me cuz like so [TS]

00:53:54   anyway so I'm very happy right now with [TS]

00:53:56   just having an older Apple laptop you [TS]

00:53:59   know in the future when that plan [TS]

00:54:00   becomes untenable I hope their modern [TS]

00:54:04   ones at that point again are better for [TS]

00:54:06   me then I'll just switch to the modern [TS]

00:54:08   ones or even if they're not better [TS]

00:54:09   maybe I'll just want to suck it up and [TS]

00:54:11   deal with it so I don't so I don't have [TS]

00:54:13   to like mess with hackintosh Azure old [TS]

00:54:15   laptops or anything else but if I could [TS]

00:54:18   like run Mac OS perfectly well on [TS]

00:54:20   something better from the PC world or [TS]

00:54:23   you know at least better for my [TS]

00:54:24   preferences sure I would consider that [TS]

00:54:28   there isn't a lot out there that's [TS]

00:54:30   honestly that much better you know it's [TS]

00:54:32   it's very similar to when I mentioned a [TS]

00:54:34   couple episodes ago how like reviewers [TS]

00:54:36   always positively review like whenever [TS]

00:54:38   there's like a new surface book or [TS]

00:54:40   whenever there's like a new Google phone [TS]

00:54:43   a new Nexus or pixel phone like the [TS]

00:54:46   reviews were always really positive and [TS]

00:54:48   then the reviewers don't end up using [TS]

00:54:49   them like they're like oh this is a [TS]

00:54:50   great phone for somebody else and then [TS]

00:54:52   like they switch back to their iPhone [TS]

00:54:53   and their MacBook like the next day [TS]

00:54:55   alright and so like it with a lot of [TS]

00:54:58   this alternative stuff it's hard to get [TS]

00:54:59   good quality long-term reviews and often [TS]

00:55:03   times the long-term reviews are a lot [TS]

00:55:04   less positive than the initial ones were [TS]

00:55:06   so it's hard to really know as as [TS]

00:55:09   somebody who admittedly does not try you [TS]

00:55:12   know not Apple hardware almost ever it's [TS]

00:55:15   hard for me to really know how good of a [TS]

00:55:16   stuff is but certainly I would have an [TS]

00:55:19   open mind to it and on the desktop I you [TS]

00:55:22   know similar to John right now Apple [TS]

00:55:24   doesn't make what I [TS]

00:55:25   need they said they're going to so I [TS]

00:55:29   hope they do unlike John I don't need my [TS]

00:55:32   Mac Pro or my Mac desktop I don't need [TS]

00:55:34   it to be a standard tower with a whole [TS]

00:55:37   bunch of like card slots for gaming [TS]

00:55:39   cards or drive bays or anything else I [TS]

00:55:41   don't actually need that the trash can [TS]

00:55:44   Mac Pro would have been great for me if [TS]

00:55:47   they just updated it like that would [TS]

00:55:49   have been great [TS]

00:55:50   they didn't which is unfortunate but [TS]

00:55:52   like if they if they could have if they [TS]

00:55:54   could just deliver me that with you know [TS]

00:55:57   not the overheating GPUs issue maybe [TS]

00:55:59   deliver me that with modern internals [TS]

00:56:02   that can drive a 5k display and that [TS]

00:56:04   would be great I would love that [TS]

00:56:05   not a lot of other people would but I [TS]

00:56:07   would so I'd be totally fine with that [TS]

00:56:08   but in the meantime they don't have that [TS]

00:56:10   and there's I don't know when that's [TS]

00:56:11   when they're new Mac Pro is coming I I [TS]

00:56:14   assume that it's hopefully next year [TS]

00:56:17   hopefully in the earlier part of the [TS]

00:56:19   year but I really have no idea [TS]

00:56:21   so desktops I would use non Apple hopper [TS]

00:56:25   because I feel like that's where it [TS]

00:56:26   would matter the least that I was using [TS]

00:56:28   non Apple hardware like you're not [TS]

00:56:29   touching it really you can you know you [TS]

00:56:31   can use someone else's screen and it's [TS]

00:56:33   not that bad you know it wouldn't be [TS]

00:56:35   that big of a deal to use someone else's [TS]

00:56:36   desktop you know especially if you build [TS]

00:56:38   a tower it's under your desk you barely [TS]

00:56:40   even see it but yeah it's a cool [TS]

00:56:43   question III like I like having I like [TS]

00:56:45   thinking about this it kind of it kind [TS]

00:56:46   of prompts you to like look around the [TS]

00:56:48   PC and Android world to see what the [TS]

00:56:51   alternatives even are but ultimately I [TS]

00:56:54   don't I don't find a lot of them very [TS]

00:56:55   compelling it would be kind of [TS]

00:56:57   interesting to build my own computer [TS]

00:56:59   again I used to do that you know I used [TS]

00:57:00   to build build my own PC and I really [TS]

00:57:03   enjoyed that hobby that was a really fun [TS]

00:57:04   hobby yeah yeah I agree it would be kind [TS]

00:57:06   of interesting to see to see like what [TS]

00:57:08   that's like now I you know from the [TS]

00:57:10   little glances I've seen here and there [TS]

00:57:11   from people posting about and stuff it [TS]

00:57:13   doesn't look doesn't seem like it's that [TS]

00:57:14   different it seems like looks - it's [TS]

00:57:16   actually about the same just like you [TS]

00:57:18   know now there's like there's been like [TS]

00:57:19   five new versions of ATX since then but [TS]

00:57:22   it's still like fairly similar you know [TS]

00:57:27   now I think everybody water cools now [TS]

00:57:28   before you know back then it was much [TS]

00:57:30   more of a specialized thing that most [TS]

00:57:32   people didn't do now water cooling is [TS]

00:57:35   much more common and there's a lot more [TS]

00:57:36   blue LEDs okay [TS]

00:57:38   would not consider a feature so but it [TS]

00:57:41   would be kind of fun to build computers [TS]

00:57:43   again but ultimately you know if Apple [TS]

00:57:47   gives me a really nice Mac Pro I'll be [TS]

00:57:49   pretty happy with that I forgot to [TS]

00:57:51   address a lot of tops because I don't [TS]

00:57:52   like laptops but if forced to pick a [TS]

00:57:54   laptop would you you know stick with the [TS]

00:57:55   Apple one I'm in a bind because I think [TS]

00:57:58   all the laptops except for the Microsoft [TS]

00:58:00   ones I find them less pleasing looking [TS]

00:58:03   than the Apple ones and you know that [TS]

00:58:06   makes a difference to me and it's not [TS]

00:58:08   like it's like you can build your own [TS]

00:58:09   laptop like you can with desktop right [TS]

00:58:11   so you don't have as many options there [TS]

00:58:12   but all I've heard about the Microsoft [TS]

00:58:15   laptops and they're you know [TS]

00:58:17   transformable tablets and stuff like [TS]

00:58:18   that is that they have all sorts of [TS]

00:58:19   weird reliability problems and [TS]

00:58:21   durability problems with the fabric and [TS]

00:58:22   everything like that line of computers [TS]

00:58:24   is the most appealing to me but I would [TS]

00:58:27   be wary of actually buying one for [TS]

00:58:28   myself because of all the reliability [TS]

00:58:30   problems I've heard for the service book [TS]

00:58:32   so you know I'm like Casey I don't have [TS]

00:58:35   a thing for the ThinkPad so I just don't [TS]

00:58:37   think there's a lot of laptop hardware [TS]

00:58:38   out there although if pressed if I was [TS]

00:58:41   forced I'll probably still just grin and [TS]

00:58:43   bear it and get an ugly PC thing just so [TS]

00:58:45   I could have ports and battery life and [TS]

00:58:47   all the things that we've complained [TS]

00:58:48   about a million times I will say there [TS]

00:58:51   was a really nice segment on back to [TS]

00:58:52   work [TS]

00:58:53   about I think it was the last week's [TS]

00:58:55   episode Microsoft wraps offered to send [TS]

00:58:59   Dan Benjamin a surface book honestly I [TS]

00:59:03   don't know I can't tell you which model [TS]

00:59:05   some kind of surface book to just try [TS]

00:59:07   out something that could be a tablet and [TS]

00:59:09   a laptop I think can they all do that I [TS]

00:59:11   don't know whatever anyway they sent him [TS]

00:59:13   one to try out and he talked about it on [TS]

00:59:15   the show and the discussion was very [TS]

00:59:16   very good you know Dan is somebody who [TS]

00:59:18   is mostly an apple person but he he has [TS]

00:59:22   recent PC experience also and so to hear [TS]

00:59:26   his impressions of the service book were [TS]

00:59:27   very good and overall despoil it overall [TS]

00:59:30   his impressions are pretty positive so [TS]

00:59:33   it's worth hearing that to know like to [TS]

00:59:36   have kind of a glimpse into the other [TS]

00:59:37   side of like what it's like when I'm [TS]

00:59:39   mostly Apple person talks all talks a [TS]

00:59:41   lot about a modern nice Windows laptop [TS]

00:59:45   and especially you know like the like [TS]

00:59:47   hearing about like what it's like to [TS]

00:59:48   have crossovers between [TS]

00:59:51   tablet mode and you know happy being [TS]

00:59:53   able to have like a pen or touch it and [TS]

00:59:56   put in a desktop OS you know Dan came [TS]

00:59:59   out of that basically [TS]

00:59:59   out of that basically [TS]

01:00:00   like Apple should have something like [TS]

01:00:02   this for Mac OS and if you're a really [TS]

01:00:05   big fan of the iPad you probably [TS]

01:00:06   shouldn't listen to this episode [TS]

01:00:08   but I think there's a lot to to consider [TS]

01:00:12   there they bring up so that that's worth [TS]

01:00:14   listen if you're interested in this kind [TS]

01:00:15   of stuff finally Tim Walker wants to [TS]

01:00:18   know any thoughts about Apple firing an [TS]

01:00:20   engineer after his daughter posted a [TS]

01:00:21   hands-on video of the iPhone 10 on [TS]

01:00:23   YouTube so the chief summarizer in chief [TS]

01:00:26   had his on basically what happened was [TS]

01:00:28   and I think it was a little while ago [TS]

01:00:31   but but certainly after the announcement [TS]

01:00:33   an Apple employee who we have later [TS]

01:00:36   found out works somewhere in the RF team [TS]

01:00:38   I guess the radio frequency team had his [TS]

01:00:41   daughter into Cafe Max and she was [TS]

01:00:44   filming a vlog and she also was handed [TS]

01:00:48   his phone like he handed her his phone [TS]

01:00:50   which was an iPhones hand again post [TS]

01:00:53   announcement but free you know before [TS]

01:00:57   everyone had them and she was flipping [TS]

01:00:59   through the home screen and I haven't [TS]

01:01:01   you know done the Kremlinology on this [TS]

01:01:02   but apparently well that's kind of a [TS]

01:01:05   loaded term now isn't it I haven't done [TS]

01:01:06   the Zapruder film or how we pronounce it [TS]

01:01:08   on this but um anyways I guess there [TS]

01:01:12   were some apps that you wouldn't expect [TS]

01:01:13   to see somebody said something about a [TS]

01:01:14   QR code that you wouldn't expect to see [TS]

01:01:16   so there was some unreleased stuff on [TS]

01:01:19   this phone for sure well this video [TS]

01:01:24   somehow or another got popular and I say [TS]

01:01:26   that only because the the the young [TS]

01:01:29   woman who had who had filmed it and put [TS]

01:01:31   it on YouTube had said you know I have [TS]

01:01:32   in so many words I have no followers I [TS]

01:01:35   don't know how this became popular etc [TS]

01:01:36   etc but somehow or another did and they [TS]

01:01:39   have since fired her dad they fired this [TS]

01:01:42   engineer and you know Tim Walker wants [TS]

01:01:44   to know well how do we feel about that [TS]

01:01:45   and my initial reaction was man that's [TS]

01:01:48   it's kind of crappy because the thing [TS]

01:01:52   was already announced everyone knew what [TS]

01:01:55   it was like what's the big deal but then [TS]

01:01:59   I found out well there was some [TS]

01:02:01   unreleased software on there and you [TS]

01:02:03   know maybe this QR code thing and some I [TS]

01:02:05   guess there may have been a code name or [TS]

01:02:07   two shown on the screen at one point or [TS]

01:02:08   another [TS]

01:02:09   and that made me less confident that [TS]

01:02:12   Apple was being a bunch of jerks and [TS]

01:02:15   then I was reminded of when Marco you [TS]

01:02:17   and I went to Apple last year in 2016 [TS]

01:02:21   and we went to IL one or one ili always [TS]

01:02:24   get it backwards we went to the the main [TS]

01:02:26   building and then we went to the theater [TS]

01:02:29   the that they would occasionally do [TS]

01:02:30   product announcements in and there's a [TS]

01:02:32   Steve Jobs quote a quote outside the [TS]

01:02:34   theater and and I think both of us are [TS]

01:02:37   certainly I you know took a picture of [TS]

01:02:38   it put it on like Instagram or something [TS]

01:02:40   like that and one of our mutual friends [TS]

01:02:41   who works at Apple actually privately [TS]

01:02:43   wrote me and was like who was letting [TS]

01:02:45   you take a picture on campus that's BS [TS]

01:02:47   in the picture was of a Steve Jobs quote [TS]

01:02:50   like and he was genuinely like perturbed [TS]

01:02:53   that this picture was taken much less [TS]

01:02:55   posted anywhere he was perturbed that [TS]

01:02:57   that my escort had allowed me to do that [TS]

01:02:59   which i think is kind of freakin [TS]

01:03:02   ridiculous but that I tell the story to [TS]

01:03:04   tell to just emphasize how how deep this [TS]

01:03:09   lies within Apple employees and so in [TS]

01:03:12   the end of the day I think you know what [TS]

01:03:15   the dude knew the rules like she [TS]

01:03:17   shouldn't have been filming in the first [TS]

01:03:19   place and definitely should not have [TS]

01:03:21   seen pre-release software if it was just [TS]

01:03:24   that he handed her the phone and it was [TS]

01:03:25   off me I don't see that as that big a [TS]

01:03:28   deal but since apparently there's some [TS]

01:03:30   there was some unreleased stuff on that [TS]

01:03:32   device that changes my tune quite [TS]

01:03:35   heavily Marco how do you feel um I come [TS]

01:03:39   down a little harder than you but nearby [TS]

01:03:40   basically you know we you know none of [TS]

01:03:44   us have ever worked at Apple and this is [TS]

01:03:47   you know internal hiring policy stuff [TS]

01:03:50   that that you know and it's hard to say [TS]

01:03:53   what should or shouldn't happen based on [TS]

01:03:55   what we know from the outside of the [TS]

01:03:57   situation because we don't we obviously [TS]

01:03:58   don't know everything cuz we don't work [TS]

01:04:00   there we don't know this person we don't [TS]

01:04:01   know everything that was inadvertently [TS]

01:04:03   revealed on that video or could have [TS]

01:04:04   been revealed or what the policies [TS]

01:04:06   exactly are written apples not that keen [TS]

01:04:08   on sharing things like that with the [TS]

01:04:10   public but but we you know I I can say [TS]

01:04:13   that when when we were there like the [TS]

01:04:17   last thing I would have ever thought to [TS]

01:04:19   do was shoot a vlog [TS]

01:04:22   I would I could I can't even imagine you [TS]

01:04:25   know to me that that just shows a a [TS]

01:04:27   severe lapse in judgment and and not of [TS]

01:04:32   the woman who was vlogging I mean she [TS]

01:04:34   wasn't the employee you know her father [TS]

01:04:35   who was permitting her to do this and [TS]

01:04:36   bring her into campus knowing she was [TS]

01:04:38   doing this like that you know he's the [TS]

01:04:40   one who has the who has the poor [TS]

01:04:42   judgment here I whether it's against the [TS]

01:04:44   rules [TS]

01:04:45   as they're written or not I don't know I [TS]

01:04:47   don't know what the rules are I would [TS]

01:04:50   never assume that would be okay and I [TS]

01:04:52   and I don't think anybody should be [TS]

01:04:54   surprised that he lost his job as a [TS]

01:04:57   result you know to let somebody in and [TS]

01:04:59   you know you said that it's you know [TS]

01:05:01   maybe it wouldn't matter if the phone [TS]

01:05:02   was off no I'll go even further the [TS]

01:05:05   phone was not out yet and the press [TS]

01:05:07   embargo wasn't even listed like reviews [TS]

01:05:08   hadn't even been permitted yet to permit [TS]

01:05:12   to bring someone into campus as an [TS]

01:05:13   employee and to permit them to shoot [TS]

01:05:17   video of your running phone of this non [TS]

01:05:19   publicly available phone I think that's [TS]

01:05:22   common sense that that would be a [TS]

01:05:23   problem yeah yeah and and that's not [TS]

01:05:26   even considering that it was allegedly [TS]

01:05:28   running internal software which is [TS]

01:05:31   another problem but even even if it [TS]

01:05:33   wasn't running internal software I think [TS]

01:05:35   allowing someone to shoot a video [TS]

01:05:37   first of all shoot a video inside campus [TS]

01:05:39   at all on publish publish it like you [TS]

01:05:41   know I had lunch at cafe max it was [TS]

01:05:43   amazing the last thing I would have [TS]

01:05:45   thought to do was shoot a video posted [TS]

01:05:48   like even though we weren't as far as I [TS]

01:05:50   know we weren't seeing anything secret [TS]

01:05:52   you know but like still it's like this [TS]

01:05:54   is like the interior of the campus like [TS]

01:05:56   it it felt incredibly privileged to be [TS]

01:06:00   there at all and I didn't want to get [TS]

01:06:03   myself or our hosts in trouble so the [TS]

01:06:06   last thing I would have thought to do [TS]

01:06:07   would be to shoot any kind of video or [TS]

01:06:09   like take pictures of people in the cafe [TS]

01:06:11   or anything like that you know I too [TS]

01:06:13   took a picture of the of the quote on [TS]

01:06:15   the wall in that one room and because it [TS]

01:06:18   was a press area I decided this is [TS]

01:06:20   probably safe to post to Instagram and I [TS]

01:06:22   did but that was the only thing that I [TS]

01:06:25   that I took a picture of they look it's [TS]

01:06:27   the only memory that I have a record of [TS]

01:06:29   that trip because I was too afraid to [TS]

01:06:32   take my phone out for any other reason [TS]

01:06:34   and I didn't want again I didn't [TS]

01:06:36   in trouble and I assumed that it would [TS]

01:06:38   get people in trouble if if any of us [TS]

01:06:41   took photos and posted them online so [TS]

01:06:43   yes so this should have been common [TS]

01:06:46   sense and I think to most Apple [TS]

01:06:48   employees it is common sense and so if [TS]

01:06:51   somebody didn't see that as common sense [TS]

01:06:53   or had had a bad lapse in judgment and [TS]

01:06:55   lost their job as a result I honestly [TS]

01:06:58   don't think that's that much of a story [TS]

01:06:59   yeah I don't think these people need to [TS]

01:07:01   use common sense because every employee [TS]

01:07:03   gets training with regard to what with [TS]

01:07:05   secrets and stuff right it's not like [TS]

01:07:06   yeah Apple just allows us to happen [TS]

01:07:09   through osmosis and culture you get told [TS]

01:07:11   when you're hired by Apple here's what [TS]

01:07:13   you can and can't do and all sorts of [TS]

01:07:16   guidelines and how to be safe and blah [TS]

01:07:17   blah blah and this is clearly a thing [TS]

01:07:20   that you're not supposed to do and this [TS]

01:07:21   person did it and then not only and [TS]

01:07:23   sometimes like well is it is it a zero [TS]

01:07:25   tolerance policy one strike and you're [TS]

01:07:27   out like oh isn't there you know okay [TS]

01:07:30   you made a mistake but maybe you're a [TS]

01:07:31   new employee and oh no no I'm not sure [TS]

01:07:34   what their policy with that is but in [TS]

01:07:36   this particular situation whether it was [TS]

01:07:39   the first time or not it was not the [TS]

01:07:42   type of thing where it's like all right [TS]

01:07:44   well you took someone hurt or you let [TS]

01:07:45   them take a picture but then you you [TS]

01:07:48   know have them deleted off their phone [TS]

01:07:49   or you listen take a picture but then it [TS]

01:07:50   never left their phone again like there [TS]

01:07:52   was a violation of the rules and [TS]

01:07:53   technically we could fire you according [TS]

01:07:55   to you know whatever thing you signed in [TS]

01:07:57   your employment agreement or error but [TS]

01:07:58   we won't because the consequences [TS]

01:08:00   weren't that bad but in this case the [TS]

01:08:01   consequences were about as bad as they [TS]

01:08:02   could possibly be and that the entire [TS]

01:08:04   world saw this video before they were [TS]

01:08:06   supposed to see it [TS]

01:08:08   revealing essentially that yes you broke [TS]

01:08:11   the rules and now everybody knows you [TS]

01:08:12   broke the rules and if Apple was to [TS]

01:08:14   allow this to happen they're basically [TS]

01:08:15   saying our PR doesn't need to actually [TS]

01:08:19   control the message for a new product [TS]

01:08:22   introductions actually random employees [TS]

01:08:24   in our cafeteria can also decide when [TS]

01:08:27   the public gets to see the phone in in [TS]

01:08:29   what context because that doesn't [TS]

01:08:30   undermine our corporate goals at all [TS]

01:08:31   this gigantic corporate you like it was [TS]

01:08:35   a mistake and it was a fireable offense [TS]

01:08:39   and it didn't go well like it went [TS]

01:08:41   pretty poorly when it's on YouTube and [TS]

01:08:44   spread all over the internet so it's a [TS]

01:08:47   sad story I feel bad for everybody [TS]

01:08:49   involved [TS]

01:08:50   right but it's not a surprising story [TS]

01:08:53   and I don't think Apple was being [TS]

01:08:55   excessively meteor because like I said I [TS]

01:08:57   think the consequences were actually [TS]

01:08:58   pretty bad might not seem that bad be [TS]

01:09:01   like well everyone knew about the phone [TS]

01:09:02   whatever but as we'll discuss in a [TS]

01:09:05   moment for probably the one and only [TS]

01:09:07   topic of the show Apple has a PR [TS]

01:09:09   department whose job it is to control [TS]

01:09:11   how the world comes to know their [TS]

01:09:15   products when they're introduced and no [TS]

01:09:17   part of the PR plan involves random [TS]

01:09:20   employees in the cafeteria posting vlogs [TS]

01:11:11   rethink what your money can do this has [TS]

01:11:17   been an interesting week and Apple PR [TS]

01:11:19   and all of the Talking Heads like us I [TS]

01:11:23   think have been there in various degrees [TS]

01:11:27   confused happy upset and enthusiastic [TS]

01:11:31   and bitter at some point or another so [TS]

01:11:34   help me get the timeline right so was it [TS]

01:11:37   Monday that was the Steven Levy's review [TS]

01:11:41   came out is that right I believe so okay [TS]

01:11:44   yeah I might have the details slightly [TS]

01:11:46   wrong on that but I think that's right [TS]

01:11:47   so Steven Levy was one of the very small [TS]

01:11:50   handful of people that reviewed the [TS]

01:11:52   original iPhone way back when and he was [TS]

01:11:56   apparently given some sort of blessing [TS]

01:11:59   to be the first person to get a review [TS]

01:12:04   posted of the iPhone 10 then I believe [TS]

01:12:09   Tuesday or maybe it was late Monday was [TS]

01:12:13   sometime shortly thereafter it ended up [TS]

01:12:16   that we saw that a bunch of youtubers [TS]

01:12:20   had if I understand things right then [TS]

01:12:23   offered to come it seemed in New York [TS]

01:12:26   often offered to come in to like an [TS]

01:12:28   Apple kind of press event where they [TS]

01:12:33   could film and use the iPhone 10 and [TS]

01:12:37   they could film the iPhone 10 and do you [TS]

01:12:40   know a couple minutes with it and they [TS]

01:12:43   could post their reviews to YouTube late [TS]

01:12:46   Monday or early Tuesday and my reaction [TS]

01:12:52   to that was kind of like what the hell [TS]

01:12:55   because it in and of itself like [TS]

01:12:58   youtubers getting access wasn't [TS]

01:13:01   unremarked or whatever wasn't remarkable [TS]

01:13:04   I think okay fine of course I'm KB HD [TS]

01:13:05   had access but it wasn't mkbhd it was [TS]

01:13:09   people that I had never heard of which [TS]

01:13:12   to be honest is actually probably a good [TS]

01:13:13   sign because I don't know who any of the [TS]

01:13:15   popular youtubers are but [TS]

01:13:17   it was surprising to me because I'm at [TS]

01:13:18   least casually aware of most of the [TS]

01:13:21   popular tech related or tech adjacent [TS]

01:13:24   youtubers like mkbhd like Casey nice [TS]

01:13:27   that in people like that and these [TS]

01:13:29   people that had access seemed to have a [TS]

01:13:32   far numerically anyway a far smaller [TS]

01:13:35   following than then the heavy hitters I [TS]

01:13:38   keep they like the nice stats in the [TS]

01:13:39   mkbhd s and that was kind of weird and [TS]

01:13:43   naturally I was a little mainly offended [TS]

01:13:48   that's probably too strong word but I [TS]

01:13:49   was a little like man why don't I get a [TS]

01:13:51   chance at this like his podcasting not a [TS]

01:13:53   thing does that not count I give up on [TS]

01:13:55   that long ago oh I know I it's a selfish [TS]

01:13:58   reaction full on but it's you know it [TS]

01:14:02   was my honest reaction and it was kind [TS]

01:14:04   of I wasn't upset about it but I was [TS]

01:14:06   kinda like what the hell and then I [TS]

01:14:07   talked with the Joseph Linsky and in [TS]

01:14:11   Matt Alexander and Matt Alexander put up [TS]

01:14:14   a really really great post about kind of [TS]

01:14:17   what do you think about when you're your [TS]

01:14:20   product company and releasing a new [TS]

01:14:22   product and how do you control the PR [TS]

01:14:24   and I am unfairly summarizing it by [TS]

01:14:29   saying the the the takeaway I had from [TS]

01:14:32   it was that these youtubers that I kind [TS]

01:14:34   of you know fluffed off is oh who are [TS]

01:14:36   they they're not important they're [TS]

01:14:38   actually quite important just to peep [TS]

01:14:40   with it to circles that I don't pay [TS]

01:14:42   attention to and I'm embarrassed to say [TS]

01:14:45   that didn't occur to me until I really [TS]

01:14:46   talked to Joe and Matt about it but it [TS]

01:14:49   seems obvious in retrospect and that's [TS]

01:14:52   probably really smart on Apple's part [TS]

01:14:54   because the reality of the situation is [TS]

01:14:56   I'm unlikely to wait very long to buy an [TS]

01:15:01   iPhone 10 and most of the listeners of [TS]

01:15:03   this show given infinite money would [TS]

01:15:06   probably buy an iPhone 10 tomorrow if [TS]

01:15:09   they haven't already [TS]

01:15:10   so does Apple really need to convince us [TS]

01:15:13   to buy an iPhone 10 no not really but [TS]

01:15:17   what about the people that care about [TS]

01:15:19   fashion or care about things that are [TS]

01:15:22   not just technology and so the reactions [TS]

01:15:25   to this were varied some very angry some [TS]

01:15:28   confused some common [TS]

01:15:30   of both and then shortly thereafter I [TS]

01:15:34   think it was Tuesday morning that all [TS]

01:15:36   that a lot of the traditional reviewers [TS]

01:15:39   like the Gruber's of the world the Jason [TS]

01:15:41   Snell's etcetera when their their [TS]

01:15:43   embargo was lifted and then we got some [TS]

01:15:47   of the stuff that we expect as Apple [TS]

01:15:49   nerds but it's been an interesting few [TS]

01:15:52   days watching Apple try to you know pull [TS]

01:15:57   the strings on this puppet and figure [TS]

01:15:59   out the best way to get this PR wave [TS]

01:16:04   orchestrated I don't know that I've been [TS]

01:16:07   talking for a while thoughts I don't [TS]

01:16:09   have a lot of thoughts on this it just [TS]

01:16:11   seemed weird it seemed like a weird [TS]

01:16:13   approach and it's really hard to talk [TS]

01:16:16   about this without you know somebody is [TS]

01:16:18   saying like oh well we're just old and [TS]

01:16:19   out of touch because everyone gets [TS]

01:16:21   everything from YouTube now and I'm not [TS]

01:16:24   even arguing that people on YouTube [TS]

01:16:26   shouldn't get you know pre-release [TS]

01:16:28   review unit access and no I think they [TS]

01:16:30   actually should you know I think Apple [TS]

01:16:32   should go to where the people are that [TS]

01:16:33   makes total sense and YouTube is where [TS]

01:16:35   many of the people are now so that makes [TS]

01:16:37   total sense the thing about it that [TS]

01:16:39   seemed weird to me is that compared to [TS]

01:16:42   all past launches like this it wasn't [TS]

01:16:46   weird that they added these YouTube [TS]

01:16:48   channels that honestly many of them were [TS]

01:16:50   not very popular as you said like that's [TS]

01:16:52   it was like it wasn't like mkbhd was [TS]

01:16:54   there at that event you know earlier [TS]

01:16:56   than everyone else like I don't know but [TS]

01:16:58   what seemed weird about it was not the [TS]

01:17:01   addition of the people who got it but [TS]

01:17:05   the subtraction of the people who didn't [TS]

01:17:07   it's again it's not weird that youtubers [TS]

01:17:10   got access it's weird that none of the [TS]

01:17:13   press did basically like that and and [TS]

01:17:16   the press that usually does as somebody [TS]

01:17:20   who follows this stuff and like I always [TS]

01:17:23   want to read those first reviews maybe [TS]

01:17:26   that makes me a dinosaur but for the [TS]

01:17:28   most part almost none of the press that [TS]

01:17:31   usually gets review units got one at all [TS]

01:17:36   or with more than like 12 hours before [TS]

01:17:39   before the publishing deadline so it's [TS]

01:17:42   just it was weird as a fan [TS]

01:17:44   most of what we have to go on is very [TS]

01:17:45   surface level and that to me is deeply [TS]

01:17:49   unsatisfying like I want I wanted like [TS]

01:17:53   the in-depth reviews from Gruber and [TS]

01:17:55   from like other yet like the other tech [TS]

01:17:57   publications that usually get them and [TS]

01:18:00   to not have that felt weird and I don't [TS]

01:18:04   think it's a good I don't think it [TS]

01:18:07   projects confidence from Apple like to [TS]

01:18:09   give so many of these reviewers less [TS]

01:18:11   than a day to review their phones [TS]

01:18:14   suggest that Apple doesn't want them to [TS]

01:18:16   spend that much time before they publish [TS]

01:18:18   their thoughts and I don't think that's [TS]

01:18:19   a like even if the iPhone 10 is great [TS]

01:18:21   and by the early reports it seems like [TS]

01:18:23   it probably is that doesn't look good [TS]

01:18:25   like that that doesn't exceed confidence [TS]

01:18:27   in their product to say like we're not [TS]

01:18:29   even gonna give you enough time to judge [TS]

01:18:30   things like battery life or face ID [TS]

01:18:32   reliability like that's that doesn't [TS]

01:18:34   look good for the product so it's just [TS]

01:18:36   weird so in an ideal world and I've seen [TS]

01:18:39   people suggest to like well they didn't [TS]

01:18:41   have enough to go around that's [TS]

01:18:42   completely wrong they have plenty if you [TS]

01:18:46   can still log on right now and order one [TS]

01:18:47   that comes in December they have plenty [TS]

01:18:49   Apple could have given phones to more [TS]

01:18:51   reviewers with more time if they wanted [TS]

01:18:54   to this was clearly a choice not to do [TS]

01:18:56   that and I just think that part is what [TS]

01:19:00   feels off about this that like we don't [TS]

01:19:02   have those in-depth reviews from tech [TS]

01:19:06   writers big publications you know really [TS]

01:19:09   hardly any of them we have we have [TS]

01:19:11   basically like three and and it's weird [TS]

01:19:15   to have so few for such an important [TS]

01:19:18   products coming out of Apple I want more [TS]

01:19:21   so I think it's easy especially if [TS]

01:19:26   you've been following Apple for a long [TS]

01:19:29   time to start getting into a tail [TS]

01:19:33   wagging the dog situation where you [TS]

01:19:35   really start to believe that the [TS]

01:19:41   publications and people who get early [TS]

01:19:45   access to Apple stuff and write their [TS]

01:19:48   reviews that that we like to read are [TS]

01:19:50   getting it because of some kind of merit [TS]

01:19:56   that they have [TS]

01:19:57   like for the original iPhone is a good [TS]

01:19:58   example like the original iPhone went to [TS]

01:20:01   Polk Mossberg at big and Levy I think [TS]

01:20:05   you know get them all there all right [TS]

01:20:07   but that's all right so that's this we [TS]

01:20:09   went to but the reason we were all [TS]

01:20:12   comfortable with that worldview is [TS]

01:20:14   because it went to Wall Street Journal [TS]

01:20:16   New York Times USA Today and it was [TS]

01:20:19   Steven Levy working for that I forget [TS]

01:20:20   maybe time but anyway famous old people [TS]

01:20:24   who've been doing this for a long time [TS]

01:20:25   working for famous powerful influential [TS]

01:20:30   old institutions and so it fit with the [TS]

01:20:33   the mental model of if you are the New [TS]

01:20:37   York Times you get the iPhone early if [TS]

01:20:39   you're The Wall Street Journal you get [TS]

01:20:40   the iPhone only and even if you're USA [TS]

01:20:42   Today which maybe Mick paper right but [TS]

01:20:45   it's extremely popular right of course [TS]

01:20:48   USA Today gets one even new visa Oh USA [TS]

01:20:50   Today what does that review gonna be [TS]

01:20:51   like haha USA Today right but they're [TS]

01:20:54   really big and so that all fits with our [TS]

01:20:58   model of like the tail being the [TS]

01:21:01   publication's wagging the dog that is [TS]

01:21:02   Apple it's like Apple has no choice they [TS]

01:21:04   have to give it to the Wall Street [TS]

01:21:06   Journal [TS]

01:21:06   Apple has no choice they have to get the [TS]

01:21:08   New York Times to the New York Times [TS]

01:21:09   just too important right but that's [TS]

01:21:12   never been the situation the tail is not [TS]

01:21:15   wagging the dog Apple has a PR [TS]

01:21:18   department whose job it is to choose how [TS]

01:21:20   best to promote their products to the [TS]

01:21:22   public it just so happens that the [TS]

01:21:25   strategy chosen by that PR department [TS]

01:21:27   has fit with the narrative that people [TS]

01:21:31   who get early access get it based on [TS]

01:21:33   prestige long time relationships with [TS]

01:21:35   Steve Jobs long time in the industry [TS]

01:21:37   like whatever whatever criteria that [TS]

01:21:39   that we had come to accept there's like [TS]

01:21:42   that's the reason they're getting it [TS]

01:21:43   when you that should never have been the [TS]

01:21:47   reason they were getting it strictly [TS]

01:21:49   speaking it should have been that like [TS]

01:21:52   it's a second degree thing where apples [TS]

01:21:54   like the best way to promote our product [TS]

01:21:57   is to have the most prestigious [TS]

01:21:59   newspapers promoted let's go find the [TS]

01:22:00   most person whose newspapers so it's a [TS]

01:22:02   second degree it's not as if like well [TS]

01:22:04   that we have no choice but to give it to [TS]

01:22:06   the most prestigious newspaper because [TS]

01:22:07   if we don't do that we'll be hurt is it [TS]

01:22:09   it's a selection of [TS]

01:22:11   a strategy and an execution of that [TS]

01:22:12   strategy in recent years Apple has been [TS]

01:22:15   changing its strategy a lot more from [TS]

01:22:19   year to year in terms of how it does [TS]

01:22:21   everything like the Mac roundtable [TS]

01:22:23   showing like Yosemite early in private [TS]

01:22:27   press briefings distributed around the [TS]

01:22:28   country the incorporation of youtubers [TS]

01:22:32   starting several years ago like from [TS]

01:22:35   year to year it's clear that Apple PR is [TS]

01:22:39   trying different strategies and [TS]

01:22:42   depending on what strategy they're [TS]

01:22:43   executing from that follows who who gets [TS]

01:22:48   this and there is no like bubble of [TS]

01:22:50   course they have to go to the New York [TS]

01:22:51   Times no they don't they didn't they [TS]

01:22:53   didn't do it this time that I had to get [TS]

01:22:55   the world street journal a bit like you [TS]

01:22:56   know there's there's no reason that the [TS]

01:22:59   Wall Street Journal has to have the best [TS]

01:23:01   and most and earliest access as compared [TS]

01:23:03   to a youtuber with not a very big follow [TS]

01:23:06   like theirs that's not a rule it's just [TS]

01:23:09   what Apple chooses to do now I'm not on [TS]

01:23:11   PR I don't know what the best strategy [TS]

01:23:13   for Apple is but this strategy this time [TS]

01:23:18   around was different in a way that [TS]

01:23:20   seemed to break people's mental model of [TS]

01:23:22   how PR works and they were forced to [TS]

01:23:24   realize that who gets what when is [TS]

01:23:26   entirely the choice of Apple on how that [TS]

01:23:29   you know how they think they can best [TS]

01:23:31   promote their product now you may say [TS]

01:23:32   that they're wrong maybe you're suddenly [TS]

01:23:33   a PR exporting it like Apple you made a [TS]

01:23:35   mistake you should have given this to [TS]

01:23:36   these people in that people in these [TS]

01:23:37   times or whatever but most people on the [TS]

01:23:40   outside aren't thinking of it that way [TS]

01:23:41   they're not thinking how how does this [TS]

01:23:43   does this put the apples best foot [TS]

01:23:45   forward right we're thinking of it as [TS]

01:23:47   consumers and I you know I am as well [TS]

01:23:49   like you just want to read you just want [TS]

01:23:52   your stories I want my stories I want [TS]

01:23:53   every through views from the people that [TS]

01:23:54   I know and if suddenly you can't read [TS]

01:23:56   those reviews you're like oh that's sad [TS]

01:23:57   for me right but it's not about whether [TS]

01:23:59   you get to read the reviews from the [TS]

01:24:01   people you want Apple doesn't care [TS]

01:24:02   whether you get to reuse and the people [TS]

01:24:03   you want unless that influences the [TS]

01:24:05   success of their product and how its [TS]

01:24:07   received by the public which maybe it is [TS]

01:24:09   and maybe that's the argument like oh [TS]

01:24:10   because you didn't give it to Walt [TS]

01:24:11   Mossberg he's retired now but because [TS]

01:24:13   you didn't give it to the New York Times [TS]

01:24:14   as early as possible now I you know [TS]

01:24:17   that's going to influence me to not buy [TS]

01:24:19   the phone or whatever like that's you [TS]

01:24:21   know that's that's not an argument so [TS]

01:24:22   mostly I think it's [TS]

01:24:25   people had the wrong model of how PR [TS]

01:24:28   works and that wrong model was brought [TS]

01:24:30   into stark relief and then a little tiny [TS]

01:24:32   bit is you moved my cheese I'm used to [TS]

01:24:35   always reading these reviews and these [TS]

01:24:37   people and expecting them to have a week [TS]

01:24:38   with the phone beforehand because it's [TS]

01:24:40   always been the case [TS]

01:24:41   right and then finally the ugliest part [TS]

01:24:43   of it is you know just general [TS]

01:24:46   bitterness that somebody got the phone [TS]

01:24:49   and somebody didn't right now it's easy [TS]

01:24:51   for us to say here in podcasts where we [TS]

01:24:52   never get anything right so at the [TS]

01:24:56   bottom of the barrel right oh well I [TS]

01:24:57   still did still room for us to be bitter [TS]

01:24:59   too because of course selfishly as Casey [TS]

01:25:01   pointed out from my perspective I love [TS]

01:25:04   that you know that more different people [TS]

01:25:07   get the iPhone I'm a more different [TS]

01:25:10   person too like we have so from an [TS]

01:25:16   outsider's perspective not thinking of [TS]

01:25:18   it as PR I wish everybody got all the [TS]

01:25:20   phones they wanted if you're doing any [TS]

01:25:23   kind of stuff on YouTube on podcasts if [TS]

01:25:25   you're writing a blog if you're doing [TS]

01:25:27   anything and you're doing it day after [TS]

01:25:29   day year after year week after week and [TS]

01:25:31   you're doing a good job and you have any [TS]

01:25:33   kind of audience I think it should be [TS]

01:25:35   possible to get review hardware for our [TS]

01:25:37   phone after it's announced but before [TS]

01:25:39   the public can get it but that's just [TS]

01:25:41   like Oh what do you want word the word [TS]

01:25:44   of the tail here we're not the dog and a [TS]

01:25:46   question Apple has to ask is not does [TS]

01:25:49   this person deserve it or do we feel [TS]

01:25:51   like we have to give it because they [TS]

01:25:52   have a big always the question is what [TS]

01:25:54   is the best strategy for selling a lot [TS]

01:25:56   of phones and making people happy for [TS]

01:25:57   them and this year they tried the [TS]

01:25:59   strategy which was this weird mix of low [TS]

01:26:02   volume youtubers plus traditional media [TS]

01:26:05   with with lead time plus some [TS]

01:26:08   traditional media with less lead time [TS]

01:26:10   and they'll see what the result is in it [TS]

01:26:12   but they'll change it next year but [TS]

01:26:15   people getting angry about it like it's [TS]

01:26:19   a it's a human reaction to you know you [TS]

01:26:22   know they moved my cheese like I want I [TS]

01:26:23   want to read the the Walt Mossberg [TS]

01:26:25   review but he retired and now I'm angry [TS]

01:26:26   well let's life like whatever you know I [TS]

01:26:30   I wish you know Gruber had had the phone [TS]

01:26:33   for two weeks and he didn't well that's [TS]

01:26:35   life right but [TS]

01:26:38   you know it I don't think the whole [TS]

01:26:40   class struggle thing of like old-world [TS]

01:26:42   tech old white dudes who always get to [TS]

01:26:44   reviews versus new people I didn't think [TS]

01:26:46   that's actually the story other than [TS]

01:26:48   like chiding people for being you know [TS]

01:26:51   for being to to sort of up their own [TS]

01:26:53   butts about it like once you start [TS]

01:26:55   really believing that like my favorite [TS]

01:26:57   person deserves to get the phone you [TS]

01:26:59   have totally lost the plot about what [TS]

01:27:00   what is going on here we're you know [TS]

01:27:04   some of us are just disappointed that we [TS]

01:27:06   don't get to read the reviews from the [TS]

01:27:07   people that we wanted to read it from at [TS]

01:27:08   the the you know the scale we want to [TS]

01:27:11   read it but but that's just us perhaps [TS]

01:27:13   this is the most brilliant PR strategy [TS]

01:27:15   ever for a phone with Apple choosing to [TS]

01:27:17   do what it you know what it did we won't [TS]

01:27:20   know until maybe we will never know [TS]

01:27:22   because we won't know like what the [TS]

01:27:23   results are of this has compared to [TS]

01:27:25   press past strategies but it's very [TS]

01:27:27   least as a less interested outside [TS]

01:27:29   observer because honestly um you know I [TS]

01:27:31   do want to read the reviews from [TS]

01:27:33   basically from people I know personally [TS]

01:27:34   like Jason's Nails review right but [TS]

01:27:36   that's that's a position that most [TS]

01:27:38   people do not find themselves in but [TS]

01:27:40   none of them are gonna influence my my [TS]

01:27:42   buying decision like what's going to be [TS]

01:27:44   imposed my buying decision is when you [TS]

01:27:45   to get them and when I get them and we [TS]

01:27:47   tried them we talk to each other like [TS]

01:27:48   anyone else but beyond that like I'm [TS]

01:27:55   excited by new people getting the phones [TS]

01:27:57   and I'm trying to think with PR mindset [TS]

01:28:00   why would it be a good idea to give low [TS]

01:28:03   volume YouTube channels early access to [TS]

01:28:05   the phone and I can think of a ton of [TS]

01:28:06   reasons not again not being anyone who [TS]

01:28:08   knows anything about PR but just like [TS]

01:28:10   think about it for a few seconds first [TS]

01:28:13   of all those people are gonna be so [TS]

01:28:14   grateful like it let just like we would [TS]

01:28:16   be grateful Apple so the some people are [TS]

01:28:18   gonna be so so the iPhone 10 like [TS]

01:28:21   because they know they're not you know [TS]

01:28:23   some big channel that has millions and [TS]

01:28:25   millions subscribers they know how big [TS]

01:28:26   they are compared to the YouTube world [TS]

01:28:28   they are gonna be so grateful to get [TS]

01:28:30   that they're all enthusiastic these [TS]

01:28:32   people love the the iPhone they love [TS]

01:28:34   Apple like it is you can't you know you [TS]

01:28:36   can't buy that enthusiasm these people [TS]

01:28:38   are not jaded cynical I've reviewed [TS]

01:28:40   every single thing and you know I just [TS]

01:28:42   expect to get it and I'm angry if I [TS]

01:28:44   don't they are excited to be there and [TS]

01:28:46   they're gonna do things and review [TS]

01:28:48   things in a way that is different than [TS]

01:28:51   people who are you [TS]

01:28:52   a hundred different things like I see [TS]

01:28:54   lots of potential interesting upsides to [TS]

01:28:57   doing what they did we already talked [TS]

01:28:59   about the downsides maybe it makes you [TS]

01:29:01   look like you're scared that you don't [TS]

01:29:03   want to give like the jaded review or [TS]

01:29:04   access to your phone because they're [TS]

01:29:05   just gonna tear it apart because they're [TS]

01:29:06   gonna find all the problems that the [TS]

01:29:08   person who gets to play with it for 10 [TS]

01:29:10   minutes in a Apple thing before release [TS]

01:29:13   isn't going to find right that all [TS]

01:29:15   factors into the decisions but I'm [TS]

01:29:19   definitely not angry that more people [TS]

01:29:20   got access to it [TS]

01:29:21   I'm not even really angry that my [TS]

01:29:24   favorites didn't get access to it [TS]

01:29:25   earlier what it seems like a lot of them [TS]

01:29:26   are angry which I you know whatever if [TS]

01:29:28   it's your livelihood I kind of don't [TS]

01:29:30   blame them but that's always the way [TS]

01:29:31   it's been with that but like to give an [TS]

01:29:34   example from my past for years and years [TS]

01:29:36   and years our technical didn't get crap [TS]

01:29:38   from Apple that our second ago could not [TS]

01:29:40   get like there was nothing they wouldn't [TS]

01:29:42   return our calls but basically like they [TS]

01:29:44   would be nice and polite that we could [TS]

01:29:47   not get anything from Apple and [TS]

01:29:49   eventually that changed and it changed [TS]

01:29:53   because apples PR strategy changed it's [TS]

01:29:55   not like we weren't worthy before and [TS]

01:29:57   were worthy after and it didn't feel [TS]

01:29:59   good when we couldn't get anything right [TS]

01:30:02   and it felt good when we could get [TS]

01:30:03   something but the the connection between [TS]

01:30:06   the quality of Ars Technica and whether [TS]

01:30:08   or not Apple gave us review Hardware was [TS]

01:30:11   not the connection people want to think [TS]

01:30:12   it is it is Apple decides what to do and [TS]

01:30:15   you honestly really have notice is [TS]

01:30:17   important life lesson you can't control [TS]

01:30:19   what other people do or think about you [TS]

01:30:21   the best you can do is just decide how [TS]

01:30:24   you're going to act and do your best [TS]

01:30:25   work and hope for the best so that's why [TS]

01:30:27   we continue to do this podcast patiently [TS]

01:30:29   waiting Apple for Apple to send us [TS]

01:30:31   preview Mac Pro hardware please call us [TS]

01:30:33   I would be if I was the one that got the [TS]

01:30:36   Mac Pro not that funny not as funny as [TS]

01:30:38   you think it is oh it's my we find it [TS]

01:30:40   very funny but it's who else are they [TS]

01:30:43   going to sent I guess they could send [TS]

01:30:44   preview Mac for a hardware to like like [TS]

01:30:46   actual professionals who are like doing [TS]

01:30:47   video and stuff but that's boring what [TS]

01:30:49   other what other cultural institution [TS]

01:30:52   cares more about the Mac Pro than this [TS]

01:30:54   podcast two-thirds of this podcast [TS]

01:31:00   recommend [TS]

01:31:02   not yet released oh my word you know I [TS]

01:31:05   should also note that a mamaan bag now I [TS]

01:31:09   didn't get a chance to look it up and I [TS]

01:31:11   think one of you added it to the show [TS]

01:31:12   notes but he had a relatively long kind [TS]

01:31:17   of rant although it was very [TS]

01:31:20   level-headed to be called a rant but a [TS]

01:31:22   discussion I guess about how one of the [TS]

01:31:25   advantages of giving you know some of [TS]

01:31:26   these youtubers access is that they're [TS]

01:31:28   not all old white guys like we are and [TS]

01:31:31   there's a lot to be said for that I [TS]

01:31:33   think John you touched on this a minute [TS]

01:31:35   ago but that's an improvement no matter [TS]

01:31:38   how you slice it that's an improvement [TS]

01:31:39   to the PR strategy now it doesn't have [TS]

01:31:42   to be at the cost of old white dudes [TS]

01:31:43   maybe maybe not I don't know but [TS]

01:31:45   certainly reaching more diverse voices [TS]

01:31:47   is a good thing for Apple so you should [TS]

01:31:51   check that out if you have about I think [TS]

01:31:53   it was a little less than ten minutes to [TS]

01:31:54   spare and like so many things in this [TS]

01:31:56   world [TS]

01:31:57   the older like the farther you go back [TS]

01:32:00   in time the more likely it is that all [TS]

01:32:02   the people in positions of power or old [TS]

01:32:03   white dudes right and so any PR strategy [TS]

01:32:08   that focuses on all white dudes is [TS]

01:32:12   necessarily back in time like we hope [TS]

01:32:15   we're making progress in all fronts and [TS]

01:32:16   that there is a more a diverse set of [TS]

01:32:18   voices out there especially with the [TS]

01:32:19   dawning the internet and the bet [TS]

01:32:21   lowering the barriers to entry and if if [TS]

01:32:23   you if they were if Apple was still [TS]

01:32:25   pursuing the same strategy they did in [TS]

01:32:26   2007 with the iPhone and only giving it [TS]

01:32:28   to all the white dudes who work for [TS]

01:32:29   newspapers like we would all agree [TS]

01:32:31   that's that's an outdated strategy right [TS]

01:32:34   if they simply shift and say we should [TS]

01:32:37   give it to new media as they did as they [TS]

01:32:39   started giving it to websites like ARS [TS]

01:32:40   technica stuff like that [TS]

01:32:41   new media you would hope has better [TS]

01:32:44   ratios of you know men and women and [TS]

01:32:49   different races like you would hope that [TS]

01:32:51   purely by moving to new media you get [TS]

01:32:54   more diversity and that's before you [TS]

01:32:57   even consider should we actually target [TS]

01:33:00   diverse reviewers because we're leaving [TS]

01:33:02   money on the table if we don't do that [TS]

01:33:04   right and so it's not even clear to me [TS]

01:33:09   that there was a specific effort to [TS]

01:33:11   target more diverse reviewers in this [TS]

01:33:13   point I think it's a natural consequence [TS]

01:33:15   of targeting modern media like you know [TS]

01:33:19   and again it's not the first time [TS]

01:33:20   they've done anything with YouTube we [TS]

01:33:21   were commenting about the fact that [TS]

01:33:23   they're not giving you the most popular [TS]

01:33:24   YouTube channels or whatever but that is [TS]

01:33:26   the the promise and the beauty of the [TS]

01:33:28   Internet and YouTube and blogs and every [TS]

01:33:31   other sort of form of media without as [TS]

01:33:36   many people preventing you from doing it [TS]

01:33:39   anyone can put up a blog anyone can put [TS]

01:33:42   up something on YouTube and that is [TS]

01:33:44   allowing us to hear from people we [TS]

01:33:46   previously didn't hear where they were [TS]

01:33:48   there we just didn't hear from them [TS]

01:33:49   because they weren't hired by the New [TS]

01:33:50   York Times right so that is all positive [TS]

01:33:53   and a conscious shift towards modern [TS]

01:33:56   media you know like podcasts which are [TS]

01:33:58   super modern but also so dominated by [TS]

01:34:01   white dude sorry yeah [TS]

01:34:04   like I think that that is all positive [TS]

01:34:06   and if anything Apple should lean even [TS]

01:34:09   more heavily in that direction because [TS]

01:34:10   all those voices are still [TS]

01:34:11   underrepresented in modern media as well [TS]

01:34:14   it's just that deal the older that [TS]

01:34:16   people get and the farther you go back [TS]

01:34:17   in time the worse it gets in terms of [TS]

01:34:19   diversity even if you're not doing [TS]

01:34:21   anything different than even if you're [TS]

01:34:22   not like consciously trying to just give [TS]

01:34:23   it to white dudes if you want to give it [TS]

01:34:25   to old people who work in newspapers [TS]

01:34:27   that's what you're gonna end up with [TS]

01:34:28   much more so than if you want to give it [TS]

01:34:29   to popular youtubers so now that we've [TS]

01:34:32   discussed the you know they completely [TS]

01:34:35   insular brouhaha what do we think of [TS]

01:34:37   these reviews it sounds like this is a [TS]

01:34:39   pretty solid phone I don't have time to [TS]

01:34:41   review so many of them yeah no I mean [TS]

01:34:44   like my one hesitation basically is like [TS]

01:34:47   almost nobody has had a chance to really [TS]

01:34:49   live with it for more than like a couple [TS]

01:34:51   days [TS]

01:34:52   so the initial impressions are great so [TS]

01:34:55   I think I'm confident enough with all [TS]

01:34:56   these reviews that my first day with the [TS]

01:34:59   phone is probably gonna be awesome I [TS]

01:35:00   just don't know how it's gonna happen [TS]

01:35:02   after that but it does seem pretty [TS]

01:35:04   positive you know you know if nothing [TS]

01:35:06   else it was only it was it was [TS]

01:35:07   frustrating to see all that PR stuff [TS]

01:35:09   because almost every one of like the [TS]

01:35:12   YouTube quick takes and even many if the [TS]

01:35:14   press quick takes were like just kind of [TS]

01:35:17   restating Apple's own PR points about [TS]

01:35:19   like look an emoji exists and it's new [TS]

01:35:22   and shiny it's coming out soon and there [TS]

01:35:25   wasn't much that we didn't already know [TS]

01:35:27   whatever we learn details of new things [TS]

01:35:29   that I didn't already know like and [TS]

01:35:31   that's one of the reasons why I like [TS]

01:35:32   Jason Snell's review so much and one [TS]

01:35:33   other and why I like the upgraded [TS]

01:35:35   podcast this week so much because it's [TS]

01:35:37   packed full of like actually new [TS]

01:35:40   information that we didn't already know [TS]

01:35:42   as enthusiasts to follow this stuff and [TS]

01:35:44   who already saw the keynote you know [TS]

01:35:46   like if we like so many of the articles [TS]

01:35:48   and reviews and YouTube things are just [TS]

01:35:50   like rehashes of the keynote event [TS]

01:35:52   basically and so to hear anything new is [TS]

01:35:54   great and as we've heard new things from [TS]

01:35:57   the very few sources that have new [TS]

01:35:59   things to report so far it just sounds [TS]

01:36:03   really great it sounds awesome [TS]

01:36:04   and I am very much looking forward to it [TS]

01:36:07   I can't wait until Friday at you know [TS]

01:36:10   9:00 p.m. when the overworked UPS [TS]

01:36:13   whoever finally gets here I cannot wait [TS]

01:36:15   for that because I'm looking forward to [TS]

01:36:18   it it sounds like what I have wanted [TS]

01:36:21   ever since the iPhone plus came out for [TS]

01:36:25   three years ago when was that three [TS]

01:36:27   years ago you know ever since then it's [TS]

01:36:29   what it's what I've wanted which is I [TS]

01:36:30   would like the benefits of that in a [TS]

01:36:33   smaller body that I can actually hold [TS]

01:36:35   more easily than the big one and so this [TS]

01:36:38   seems to offer basically that like [TS]

01:36:41   there's a few things that are different [TS]

01:36:42   like you know the screen is like taller [TS]

01:36:44   and skinnier you know it's not it isn't [TS]

01:36:46   like the same aspect ratio and width as [TS]

01:36:48   the fluffs phone but it seems like we [TS]

01:36:51   have the best of everything in this [TS]

01:36:52   phone finally and that's that's gonna be [TS]

01:36:55   really great I am a little concerned [TS]

01:36:57   about reach ability of the vertical [TS]

01:37:00   reach ability but I'm kind of looking [TS]

01:37:02   forward to it as an app developer you [TS]

01:37:04   know I finally I shipped overcast for we [TS]

01:37:08   should be at by the time this shows [TS]

01:37:09   edited if everything goes well now I [TS]

01:37:12   have a giant canvas to play with and now [TS]

01:37:14   I have a whole UI to rethink I haven't [TS]

01:37:17   really done much of that yet I basically [TS]

01:37:19   just expanded the existing UI to fill [TS]

01:37:21   the screen properly because I didn't [TS]

01:37:24   want to do any redesign work without [TS]

01:37:26   actually having it in my hand physically [TS]

01:37:28   to test with and it's like how does this [TS]

01:37:30   actually feel what can I actually reach [TS]

01:37:32   you know things like that but I'm [TS]

01:37:34   looking forward to this new era of kind [TS]

01:37:38   of having to rethink everything it's [TS]

01:37:39   it's a ton of work for developers as I [TS]

01:37:41   mentioned last week but I think it's [TS]

01:37:43   going to be real [TS]

01:37:44   nice when we when we get there and I'm [TS]

01:37:46   really looking forward to having all [TS]

01:37:47   this real estate on the screen to play [TS]

01:37:50   with you know my now playing screen it [TS]

01:37:51   can have so many more features but now [TS]

01:37:54   that I have like a tall skinny aspect [TS]

01:37:55   ratio so like I'm looking forward to [TS]

01:37:58   both his developer and as a user and as [TS]

01:38:00   a fan of this stuff and I'm I'm happy to [TS]

01:38:02   see so far that the reviews shallow as [TS]

01:38:05   many of them are are seemingly [TS]

01:38:09   universally positive and it seems like [TS]

01:38:11   everyone loves face ID it seems like [TS]

01:38:13   it's really fast it seems like it does [TS]

01:38:15   it's not perfect but it's close enough [TS]

01:38:16   and people don't seem to notice it much [TS]

01:38:18   anymore which is awesome overall I'm [TS]

01:38:20   very excited I'm very happy and thankful [TS]

01:38:23   I got a day one order in and I just [TS]

01:38:26   can't wait to get it yep [TS]

01:38:27   yeah I'm mostly relieved that FaceTime [TS]

01:38:30   works as we always would like from sorry [TS]

01:38:34   yes face ID because that was that was my [TS]

01:38:37   big fear that that face ID would be good [TS]

01:38:40   but just barely under the threshold of [TS]

01:38:44   of annoyance and every review I've read [TS]

01:38:47   so far has said it's fine like it does [TS]

01:38:50   it works like Apple says it's supposed [TS]

01:38:52   to within the parameters that they set [TS]

01:38:54   out there are no surprises and it feels [TS]

01:38:56   good to use it's different but as [TS]

01:38:59   someone who spent a long time with touch [TS]

01:39:01   ID phones you know we all know and have [TS]

01:39:04   internalized the vagaries of touch ID no [TS]

01:39:07   wet fingers sometimes doesn't get it on [TS]

01:39:09   the first try [TS]

01:39:09   you got to pick up your finger and put [TS]

01:39:11   it down again every once in a while you [TS]

01:39:12   get the code thrown in your face and we [TS]

01:39:16   just accept that as the price of living [TS]

01:39:17   with with touch ID face ID has all the [TS]

01:39:20   equivalents of that it's too far away [TS]

01:39:21   from me there's bright Sun you know my [TS]

01:39:25   identical twin can unlock my phone all [TS]

01:39:27   sorts of things like yes every one of [TS]

01:39:29   these things has inherent problems but [TS]

01:39:31   the videos I've seen about how long it [TS]

01:39:34   takes to unlock like people going down [TS]

01:39:36   it's doing of timing and stop watching [TS]

01:39:38   everything that shows me so far not [TS]

01:39:40   having use one of these myself but it [TS]

01:39:43   seems like it's with it's under the the [TS]

01:39:45   threshold like that it's acceptable [TS]

01:39:47   right and like touch ID was in the first [TS]

01:39:51   iteration touch ID in the first [TS]

01:39:52   iteration was also like you know I was [TS]

01:39:55   obviously a vast improvement over typing [TS]

01:39:56   in code but it got better in the set [TS]

01:39:58   so I'm already looking forward to the [TS]

01:39:59   second one but the first one like [TS]

01:40:00   there's no catastrophic problem like oh [TS]

01:40:02   my goodness this phone hinges on face ID [TS]

01:40:05   and face ID is just too annoying to use [TS]

01:40:08   that does not appear to be the case so [TS]

01:40:10   I'm relieved [TS]

01:40:10   in that case and you know the their [TS]

01:40:15   views I've read in full like Jason's and [TS]

01:40:17   I've read some of Hannah's Reno's like [TS]

01:40:20   their their take on the phone obviously [TS]

01:40:22   speaks to me the most because they're [TS]

01:40:23   you know they have they come from the [TS]

01:40:25   same experiences that I do but getting [TS]

01:40:26   back to the PR thing briefly all those [TS]

01:40:28   reviews they're like oh this is a [TS]

01:40:29   shallow review and doesn't tell me [TS]

01:40:31   anything that I didn't already know the [TS]

01:40:33   people who watch that video don't know [TS]

01:40:35   all the things that we already know [TS]

01:40:36   because they didn't pour over the [TS]

01:40:37   keynote and do a three-hour podcast [TS]

01:40:38   about it that's all new information to [TS]

01:40:40   the people who watch that channel people [TS]

01:40:42   who watch that channel have seen like an [TS]

01:40:44   advertisement and some images and [TS]

01:40:45   articles that didn't read and everything [TS]

01:40:47   they're being told they were learning it [TS]

01:40:49   for the first time from a trusted face [TS]

01:40:50   that they know right that's so again if [TS]

01:40:53   I had to put myself my PR hat on and [TS]

01:40:55   think like if you you know how do you [TS]

01:40:56   imagine PR might work reaching people [TS]

01:41:00   who aren't you know poring over [TS]

01:41:03   everything that that comes from Apple [TS]

01:41:06   those reviews aren't shallow to them [TS]

01:41:08   that is a giant info dump as far as [TS]

01:41:10   they're concerned yeah we're hearing [TS]

01:41:11   things that were like yeah yeah I knew [TS]

01:41:12   that knew that knew that I knew that but [TS]

01:41:14   the people who are watching those videos [TS]

01:41:15   on those channels that are not tech [TS]

01:41:17   related didn't know any of that stuff [TS]

01:41:19   and they're seeing the new iPhone for [TS]

01:41:21   the very first time maybe I don't even [TS]

01:41:22   understand what a big deal it is like [TS]

01:41:24   whatever the new iPhone is it out yet [TS]

01:41:25   can you buy it do all my friends already [TS]

01:41:27   have it they don't know those are [TS]

01:41:30   channels that were probably being [TS]

01:41:31   underserved by just giving it to the [TS]

01:41:33   tech columnist and The Wall Street [TS]

01:41:34   Journal and a bunch of Apple bloggers [TS]

01:41:37   nerds so again I can imagine all sorts [TS]

01:41:40   of potential upsides to the strategy [TS]

01:41:42   that Apple took even some of my mkbhd [TS]

01:41:45   has a nerd audience like that's a nerdy [TS]

01:41:48   channel right it's not the same as [TS]

01:41:49   giving it to someone who works for a [TS]

01:41:51   fashion magazine it's a different [TS]

01:41:52   audience and Apple's reaching different [TS]

01:41:54   people with this strategy now what was [TS]

01:41:56   that I think it was uh was it Marco okay [TS]

01:41:58   which one of you brought up the [TS]

01:41:59   subtracting people me that's the that [TS]

01:42:03   part of the strategy of not giving it to [TS]

01:42:05   the other institutions I have more [TS]

01:42:08   trouble thinking up a reason for that of [TS]

01:42:10   the [TS]

01:42:10   they were afraid that the cranky sort of [TS]

01:42:17   you know the old guard would be more [TS]

01:42:19   likely to spend time focusing on the [TS]

01:42:22   flaws and less time being excited about [TS]

01:42:24   the cool stuff but that's just that's [TS]

01:42:26   just a theory [TS]

01:42:27   like and again I think Apple PR tries [TS]

01:42:29   things and looks at the results and [TS]

01:42:31   adjust their strategy and they've done [TS]

01:42:32   it so many times that I give them leeway [TS]

01:42:34   to try this strategy and we'll see what [TS]

01:42:36   they do with the next one [TS]

01:42:37   all right thanks to our sponsors this [TS]

01:42:39   week Casper [TS]

01:42:40   and we'll see you next week [TS]

01:42:44   [Music] [TS]

01:42:55   [Music] [TS]

01:43:01   because it was accidentally was [TS]

01:43:05   accidental and you can find the show [TS]

01:43:09   notes at ATP FM and if floor into [TS]

01:43:14   Twitter you can follow them CAS II WA L [TS]

01:43:20   is esta that's Casey less ma RC o AR m [TS]

01:43:25   and T Marco Arment [TS]

01:43:28   SI r AC us a Syracuse [TS]

01:43:39   I have some after-show things to ask [TS]

01:43:48   Casey about so I am super behind on [TS]

01:43:51   Twitter Casey have you already posted [TS]

01:43:53   your video review of the Alpha no good [TS]

01:43:58   god no yeah you eat we mark when I spoke [TS]

01:44:00   about this a little bit in the pre-show [TS]

01:44:02   and and I have purchased Final Cut Pro [TS]

01:44:05   Final Cut Pro X whatever it is right [TS]

01:44:09   this free car is already costing you [TS]

01:44:10   money oh is it ever I did post a like [TS]

01:44:13   literally eight second teaser to Twitter [TS]

01:44:17   earlier today I stopped that teaser [TS]

01:44:21   deliberately right before I got to [TS]

01:44:23   Quadrifoglio because I didn't want to [TS]

01:44:25   have the entire internet make fun of me [TS]

01:44:26   for pronouncing that incorrectly so I am [TS]

01:44:30   pleased with the progress on making on [TS]

01:44:33   the video but I have made very little [TS]

01:44:36   progress and it is slow going but that [TS]

01:44:38   progress that has been made I'm pleased [TS]

01:44:40   with so I am actually I did actually see [TS]

01:44:42   that clip so that's how far behind I am [TS]

01:44:43   Twitter I think I just read that before [TS]

01:44:45   we sat down podcasting and I have one [TS]

01:44:47   piece of advice I watched it with mute [TS]

01:44:49   on so I didn't hear any of the audio I [TS]

01:44:51   did see is one of the default fonts for [TS]

01:44:54   titles so cranky about that do not use [TS]

01:44:59   that fund everyone got so cranky about [TS]

01:45:01   that [TS]

01:45:02   I don't I don't think it was the default [TS]

01:45:06   now I'm not arguing it was one of a [TS]

01:45:09   short list of options it's completely [TS]

01:45:11   correct but it was not the default I [TS]

01:45:14   don't believe and I have since changed [TS]

01:45:15   it to Futura [TS]

01:45:16   because I haven't come up with a better [TS]

01:45:18   plan yet I was laying put it this way [TS]

01:45:23   that's the font i use on my destiny [TS]

01:45:24   videos you should be aiming higher than [TS]

01:45:26   that fair enough okay see you know if [TS]

01:45:29   you have a bunch of people complain that [TS]

01:45:30   your font isn't good enough you only [TS]

01:45:31   have two options comic sans and papyrus [TS]

01:45:34   no avatar d so far so you don't have be [TS]

01:45:37   confused with that it's hard yeah I mean [TS]

01:45:41   it's so far so good [TS]

01:45:42   I can certainly send two of you guys a [TS]

01:45:44   draft if you give a crap for the first [TS]

01:45:47   two seconds I saw but also again with [TS]

01:45:49   meudon or whatever seven seconds [TS]

01:45:50   whatever it was hmm don't take this the [TS]

01:45:52   wrong way [TS]

01:45:53   but it's hard for me to tell whether you [TS]

01:45:55   are doing an homage to the the car [TS]

01:45:59   review channels that you watch and love [TS]

01:46:01   or a parody of them like you should feel [TS]

01:46:06   constrained by the formats that have [TS]

01:46:09   come before yes we've all seen these [TS]

01:46:10   other car channels but I don't think you [TS]

01:46:14   need to do a car view the way you do [TS]

01:46:17   them you can do them the KC way now [TS]

01:46:19   maybe it starts by saying I'm gonna [TS]

01:46:20   imitate the channels that I know and [TS]

01:46:22   love or like maybe you are sending them [TS]

01:46:24   up or maybe half of it is the joke that [TS]

01:46:26   you are exactly following the format of [TS]

01:46:28   the channels that you like but it's [TS]

01:46:29   funny because it's you doing it right I [TS]

01:46:31   don't know I have been sound was off but [TS]

01:46:34   I would encourage you to spread your [TS]

01:46:36   wings and fly and do whatever the hell [TS]

01:46:38   kind of car view you want to do your [TS]

01:46:41   assessment is semi correct so I need to [TS]

01:46:45   pull from somewhere right like I'm not a [TS]

01:46:47   creative enough person that I can just [TS]

01:46:49   fart out like this brand new paradigm is [TS]

01:46:52   you are your excellent farter KC I am a [TS]

01:46:55   very good farter full of gas everybody [TS]

01:46:57   loves it is that a marketable skill we [TS]

01:47:00   wish because if so yeah the three of us [TS]

01:47:02   we've got that unblocked no I I need [TS]

01:47:05   somewhere to start from and my starting [TS]

01:47:09   point and certainly the first seven [TS]

01:47:10   seconds completely bears this out and [TS]

01:47:12   you're right but my starting point is [TS]

01:47:14   kind of mostly Doug de Muro style review [TS]

01:47:19   but the formula is not identical like [TS]

01:47:22   it's not a bunch of quirks then you know [TS]

01:47:26   in-car video then Doug score like it's [TS]

01:47:29   not gonna be quite that formulaic but I [TS]

01:47:30   do start with some of me talking around [TS]

01:47:33   the outside of the car then we talking [TS]

01:47:34   about all I've got so far that the [TS]

01:47:37   intention is to about of me talking [TS]

01:47:40   about the inside of the car but very [TS]

01:47:41   little in the in the realm of quirks and [TS]

01:47:44   more about just what does it feel like [TS]

01:47:45   to drive a Julia and then a little bit [TS]

01:47:49   of ride-along footage which I actually [TS]

01:47:50   think will probably be pretty brief [TS]

01:47:52   because all it's going to be is me [TS]

01:47:53   giggling about how fast it is and how [TS]

01:47:56   good it sounds and then a little bit at [TS]

01:47:59   the end which is again me standing in [TS]

01:48:01   front of the car outside so and I have a [TS]

01:48:05   couple of [TS]

01:48:06   I feel like this is if it goes the way I [TS]

01:48:10   intend it's going to be part Doug de [TS]

01:48:15   Muro part cgp grey in that I have some [TS]

01:48:21   well not really awesome so that I don't [TS]

01:48:26   know if you saw it John this might have [TS]

01:48:27   been before you before he jumped on the [TS]

01:48:29   call but I'd put in the chat a link to a [TS]

01:48:33   still picture that I had taken which is [TS]

01:48:36   of the three key fobs and so yeah this [TS]

01:48:39   is when you were here because you were [TS]

01:48:40   talking about the Accord key fob and and [TS]

01:48:43   the the stick with that is that is like [TS]

01:48:47   the final frame in me building up to [TS]

01:48:51   what you see so the you know as as the [TS]

01:48:54   voice-over is going I have just a white [TS]

01:48:56   sheet of paper and then I then you see [TS]

01:48:57   the BMW e90 key appear and then you know [TS]

01:49:01   the next quote-unquote frame which is [TS]

01:49:03   probably you know thirty literal frames [TS]

01:49:05   later you see the e90 having been [TS]

01:49:08   written and then you see the f30 key [TS]

01:49:10   appear thirty frames later the f30 key [TS]

01:49:13   that's that's been written you see what [TS]

01:49:14   I'm saying so there's like a there's [TS]

01:49:16   some gags not gags that's too strong a [TS]

01:49:19   word but like some cutesy timing that [TS]

01:49:22   I'm trying to do for a couple of these [TS]

01:49:23   things is that on top of a toilet tank [TS]

01:49:25   no also screw you that's my trunk you [TS]

01:49:29   bastard that's a white car it's hard to [TS]

01:49:31   tell clean keeps his car anyway but the [TS]

01:49:48   reason I say it's vaguely CGP grey ish [TS]

01:49:51   is that I think one of the ten tenets [TS]

01:49:54   isn't word I'm looking for one of the [TS]

01:49:55   like sticks with a CGP grey video is [TS]

01:49:58   being cutesy with the timing and I mean [TS]

01:50:00   that in a complimentary way you know [TS]

01:50:02   like things are happening visually on [TS]

01:50:04   beats verbal beats and and so there's [TS]

01:50:09   like a little bit of that going on and [TS]

01:50:11   there's a little an to do a little bit [TS]

01:50:13   of that with regard to the interior as [TS]

01:50:15   well I hope I can trim it down like it's [TS]

01:50:18   a couple of minutes long [TS]

01:50:20   it's three minutes right now and it has [TS]

01:50:23   probably a third of the footage I want [TS]

01:50:26   maybe even a little less than that and [TS]

01:50:27   I'm aiming for between five and ten [TS]

01:50:29   minutes [TS]

01:50:30   I think the 20 minute demure Doug Miro [TS]

01:50:33   reviews that's way too much for me today [TS]

01:50:35   if I get in the habit of doing this [TS]

01:50:36   maybe I'll get in the habit of doing you [TS]

01:50:38   know 20 minute reviews one day [TS]

01:50:40   eventually but for my first crack at [TS]

01:50:43   this [TS]

01:50:43   I really hope to stay under 10 and would [TS]

01:50:46   prefer to be closer to five but I I [TS]

01:50:48   think it'll be ten or it maybe even more [TS]

01:50:50   than that just don't spend a lot of time [TS]

01:50:52   on the owners manual on the spare tire [TS]

01:50:53   and you'll be fine sorry okay noted I [TS]

01:50:58   deeply regret not having bought or or [TS]

01:51:01   rented or done something to get a laugh [TS]

01:51:03   Mike I think the audio quality is I'm [TS]

01:51:06   going to get dinged for pretty bad to [TS]

01:51:07   the point that I am debating actually [TS]

01:51:10   trying to dub yeah I feel like bad audio [TS]

01:51:15   on your first youtube video featuring [TS]

01:51:16   yourself as a rite of passage for [TS]

01:51:18   everybody who's not mark oh yeah that's [TS]

01:51:20   probably true even I only had mediocre [TS]

01:51:22   audio but you were way above the normal [TS]

01:51:25   bar which is like you sounds like you're [TS]

01:51:27   talking to a laptop microphone from [TS]

01:51:28   across the room everybody's first [TS]

01:51:29   YouTube video has to be like I think [TS]

01:51:31   it's the rule yeah I mean I was wearing [TS]

01:51:32   a lot like just a crappy one [TS]

01:51:35   I had crappy lava yeah you still sounded [TS]

01:51:39   way way better than what people's first [TS]

01:51:40   youtube video supposed to sound like [TS]

01:51:41   yeah no I mean I would say Casey like [TS]

01:51:43   it's better to like a and and I'm saying [TS]

01:51:46   this to myself as much as you because [TS]

01:51:48   when I tried to do a like nice-looking [TS]

01:51:51   YouTube video with my MacBook Pro review [TS]

01:51:52   like I look back on it recently and it's [TS]

01:51:55   like I can't I can't even watch it it's [TS]

01:51:57   so bad like at the time I didn't think [TS]

01:51:59   it was that bad now looking back on it [TS]

01:52:01   now I think it's really bad and I it's [TS]

01:52:04   painful for me to even see it someone [TS]

01:52:07   that one of the lessons I learned from [TS]

01:52:08   that that I wish I would have learned [TS]

01:52:09   before I made it is it's better to do a [TS]

01:52:14   better job at a format you can do better [TS]

01:52:16   than to then to aim too high with with [TS]

01:52:20   the format or style that you want to [TS]

01:52:22   create and do a bad job of it and that's [TS]

01:52:25   what I did [TS]

01:52:25   I aim too high I tried to create a much [TS]

01:52:28   higher production value video than what [TS]

01:52:31   my skill and experience and to some [TS]

01:52:33   degree equipment [TS]

01:52:34   was actually capable of but this is [TS]

01:52:36   mostly not an equipment problem this is [TS]

01:52:39   mostly a skill and experience problem [TS]

01:52:41   yeah and the fact is like we've made so [TS]

01:52:44   few videos I don't know if you have a [TS]

01:52:46   better knack at it than I do it's hard [TS]

01:52:48   to have a worse knockout than I do if I [TS]

01:52:50   make any more videos I'm going to try to [TS]

01:52:52   make them in a more casual way with [TS]

01:52:54   lower production value intentionally to [TS]

01:52:56   prevent me from getting too much in the [TS]

01:52:59   weeds here because like you know you [TS]

01:53:01   might be thinking about fixing your [TS]

01:53:02   audio that's cool you should have good [TS]

01:53:04   audio if you can but that's probably not [TS]

01:53:06   gonna be your biggest challenge your [TS]

01:53:08   biggest challenge is gonna be like [TS]

01:53:09   things that people who make video more [TS]

01:53:12   and who are experienced and/or trained [TS]

01:53:15   with it are better so things like [TS]

01:53:17   composition timing cutting motion color [TS]

01:53:21   Corrections like stuff stuff that like [TS]

01:53:23   that casual beginners just don't get or [TS]

01:53:26   need experience to develop to get and [TS]

01:53:30   because we've made so few videos we [TS]

01:53:34   don't have that yet so it's better I [TS]

01:53:38   think to aim for something more casual [TS]

01:53:40   less produced less fancy and just put [TS]

01:53:45   that out there then to try to make [TS]

01:53:47   something super professional when you [TS]

01:53:50   don't have the tool set or the skills [TS]

01:53:52   that are the experience to be able to [TS]

01:53:54   achieve the look you're going for yet [TS]

01:53:56   yeah I think that makes sense and I [TS]

01:53:58   think I feel like my aspiration is to [TS]

01:54:04   have something that feels like it even [TS]

01:54:07   feels vaguely like a cross of dim euro [TS]

01:54:10   and gray not to say that that's my [TS]

01:54:11   marching orders but but just that [TS]

01:54:13   somebody could watch this film or [TS]

01:54:16   whatever you want to call it this this [TS]

01:54:17   video and say yeah I see what he was [TS]

01:54:20   going for there and I can see a little [TS]

01:54:21   sprinkle of demure and a little sprinkle [TS]

01:54:22   of gray there and okay he didn't get [TS]

01:54:26   there but I see where this line is [TS]

01:54:28   heading well you can't really have a [TS]

01:54:29   line if it's only one data point but you [TS]

01:54:31   know what I'm saying like I understand [TS]

01:54:32   where he's going with this and yeah that [TS]

01:54:34   was a bit ham-fisted here the audio is [TS]

01:54:36   crappy there but there's promise here [TS]

01:54:39   does that make sense like I wanna I feel [TS]

01:54:43   like it is within my skill set to to get [TS]

01:54:46   in the vicinity [TS]

01:54:48   of this perfect video that I have in my [TS]

01:54:50   brain [TS]

01:54:51   and I don't think I'm gonna deliver the [TS]

01:54:53   perfect video that's in my brain but I [TS]

01:54:55   do feel like the the things I'm asking [TS]

01:54:58   of myself I'm reaching to get to them [TS]

01:55:01   but I think they're by and large [TS]

01:55:05   attainable which is kind of it which is [TS]

01:55:07   the best place to be right where you're [TS]

01:55:09   uncomfortable but not and so that's [TS]

01:55:12   that's where I think I am remind me of [TS]

01:55:14   this when the video is released insider [TS]

01:55:15   garbage well and the thing is to like [TS]

01:55:17   you know you're comparing yourself to [TS]

01:55:20   people who are such pros yeah I'll give [TS]

01:55:26   you a quick story here it's like in this [TS]

01:55:28   so gray is gonna be so embarrassed that [TS]

01:55:31   I'm that I'm saying this but oh well [TS]

01:55:32   sorry great I don't want to give any [TS]

01:55:35   details really in case I didn't bears [TS]

01:55:37   anybody but at some point I witnessed [TS]

01:55:39   somebody asking gray for a critique on a [TS]

01:55:44   video he like kind of you know went on [TS]

01:55:47   his phone for a few minutes in the [TS]

01:55:48   conversation went elsewhere and about 15 [TS]

01:55:50   minutes later he showed on his phone he [TS]

01:55:54   had real just on his phone he had recut [TS]

01:55:56   the entire video and was showing frame [TS]

01:56:00   by fan I saw before and after and his [TS]

01:56:02   was way better just by recutting the [TS]

01:56:05   footage that he was given in this video [TS]

01:56:07   and he was able to explain why he [TS]

01:56:10   rearranged things he trimmed things [TS]

01:56:12   differently why he liked certain scenes [TS]

01:56:14   float into the other ones better than [TS]

01:56:16   the other ones and how this reordering [TS]

01:56:17   and recutting of this completely changed [TS]

01:56:21   the feel and pace and and overall [TS]

01:56:24   quality of this video and to see him do [TS]

01:56:26   that it's like it's I imagine like when [TS]

01:56:30   when non-tech people see tech people [TS]

01:56:32   like whiz through a problem on the [TS]

01:56:34   computer superfast and it blows their [TS]

01:56:36   mind that's how I felt watching this [TS]

01:56:38   like I'm like oh my god like that's this [TS]

01:56:40   is a skill set that people like gray [TS]

01:56:43   have because they're very experienced [TS]

01:56:44   with this and and they're very good at [TS]

01:56:46   it yeah yeah when I compare how the way [TS]

01:56:49   I approach making a video to the way [TS]

01:56:52   that I saw a pro do it my god it's [TS]

01:56:56   worlds apart it like so like I don't [TS]

01:57:00   even have the vocab you [TS]

01:57:02   Lari to describe you know what it is [TS]

01:57:05   that he was doing and why it was better [TS]

01:57:08   but it was way better and the way he was [TS]

01:57:11   explaining it it like it made total [TS]

01:57:14   sense but I could never to come up with [TS]

01:57:16   that and so like you're getting started [TS]

01:57:18   in this you know you don't have a lot of [TS]

01:57:20   video experience right like you don't [TS]

01:57:22   have like a secret YouTube career [TS]

01:57:23   because that we didn't know about no and [TS]

01:57:25   in and for those who listen to this if [TS]

01:57:27   this makes the released version of the [TS]

01:57:29   show like I have never ever edited [TS]

01:57:31   podcast truly I never have not once [TS]

01:57:33   because it's always been either you or [TS]

01:57:35   Mike or you know one of your minions [TS]

01:57:39   organization full of minions here yeah [TS]

01:57:41   exactly the two of you have just minions [TS]

01:57:43   all the way down but but you know what I [TS]

01:57:45   mean like I've never even edited a [TS]

01:57:46   podcast so I've dabbled in iMovie a [TS]

01:57:49   couple times and I think I've dabbled in [TS]

01:57:51   GarageBand maybe once but these are [TS]

01:57:54   these are tools that I am not familiar [TS]

01:57:56   with so I'm just kind of hacking at it [TS]

01:57:58   you know I feel like I'm going through [TS]

01:57:59   the jungle not with a machete but with [TS]

01:58:02   like a pocketknife and I do feel like [TS]

01:58:05   I'm making forward progress but [TS]

01:58:08   unequivocally what I release is going to [TS]

01:58:10   look ham-fisted what I hope though is [TS]

01:58:13   that once you get past the crap audio [TS]

01:58:15   and once you get past the fact that the [TS]

01:58:17   timing is wrong once you get past the [TS]

01:58:19   fact that inevitably this video will run [TS]

01:58:21   longer than it should and I'm gonna try [TS]

01:58:22   my damnedest to cut it down but I know [TS]

01:58:24   it'll end up running too long I hope [TS]

01:58:26   that you the collective you can see this [TS]

01:58:31   and say I see the start of something [TS]

01:58:34   here it's probably not the end hopefully [TS]

01:58:38   not the end and this I can see how this [TS]

01:58:41   is going to get better with time and and [TS]

01:58:43   part of the way I've tried to do that is [TS]

01:58:46   I do feel like my review my video review [TS]

01:58:48   is going to have a bit of a narrative I [TS]

01:58:51   feel like I can't I have created an arc [TS]

01:58:53   and I even took some engineering paper [TS]

01:58:54   from college and like drew out like [TS]

01:58:56   really crudely drawn storyboards which I [TS]

01:58:58   think I put on like - the stories well [TS]

01:59:03   but it's I mean that's how I'm trying to [TS]

01:59:05   like frame it in my head because you [TS]

01:59:07   were doing an unreal pencil and paper [TS]

01:59:08   like your Mike earlier or something yeah [TS]

01:59:10   which is which is barbaric but it's the [TS]

01:59:12   best way I could come up with to try to [TS]

01:59:13   like [TS]

01:59:15   through the story I want to tell and I [TS]

01:59:18   think if I didn't at least have the [TS]

01:59:20   beginnings in that regard I I would be [TS]

01:59:24   totally lost in this video would never [TS]

01:59:25   come out but since I had an Xcode [TS]

01:59:27   storyboards finally finally used for it [TS]

01:59:30   that's true but I I guess what I'm [TS]

01:59:35   saying roundabout way is this is going [TS]

01:59:37   to be embarrassing when I release it if [TS]

01:59:39   I do it all it may be so embarrassing [TS]

01:59:41   that I don't release there are only [TS]

01:59:42   seven to send it to my friends I don't [TS]

01:59:43   know that you should after you release [TS]

01:59:45   this video you should by all rights have [TS]

01:59:47   the most popular YouTube channel on this [TS]

01:59:49   podcast I think Marco had does have you [TS]

01:59:54   have a lot of views on your on your your [TS]

01:59:56   MacBook thing but in theory a review of [TS]

01:59:59   any [TS]

01:59:59   any [TS]

02:00:00   a thousand dollar sports sedan has more [TS]

02:00:02   like general interest than I'd yet [TS]

02:00:04   another review of like a laptop so I [TS]

02:00:06   feel like you should come out as the [TS]

02:00:08   undisputed views champion of ATP I hope [TS]

02:00:11   I hope so and well I think my plan is to [TS]

02:00:15   release it I really do feel like I can [TS]

02:00:17   get it to a point that I'm only lightly [TS]

02:00:20   embarrassed by it rather than deeply [TS]

02:00:22   embarrassed by it but we'll see what [TS]

02:00:24   happens [TS]

02:00:25   and part of the reason I really want to [TS]

02:00:27   release it is because I feel like I have [TS]

02:00:29   a story here and that story may not be [TS]

02:00:31   interesting to anyone else it's like you [TS]

02:00:33   know when you when you have like a [TS]

02:00:34   really good slideshow of your vacation [TS]

02:00:36   right to some degree what we made you [TS]

02:00:38   sit through John when when Mark when I [TS]

02:00:40   went to Germany and then again when we [TS]

02:00:42   went like to us we had this like story [TS]

02:00:46   arc and it was fascinating and exciting [TS]

02:00:47   but to you it might have been a total [TS]

02:00:48   freaking snooze it may be the same thing [TS]

02:00:51   here but I feel like I have a story arc [TS]

02:00:53   I feel like I have something to say and [TS]

02:00:56   maybe it's completely selfish but I've I [TS]

02:00:59   have already filmed my conclusion and I [TS]

02:01:02   add I knew what I wanted to say but I [TS]

02:01:04   ad-lib did and I'm really really happy [TS]

02:01:06   with how it came out and so I feel like [TS]

02:01:10   if I've got a decent start and I've got [TS]

02:01:13   a good but pretty pretty good end that [TS]

02:01:15   I'm pretty happy with so if I can just [TS]

02:01:16   get the middle okay then it'll be okay [TS]

02:01:20   and we'll see what happens but I am [TS]

02:01:23   having fun and that's the other thing if [TS]

02:01:24   nothing else I'm having fun and I'm [TS]

02:01:27   adding a tool to my tool belt will that [TS]

02:01:30   be interesting very useful in the future [TS]

02:01:32   maybe not who knows but Alfre Mayo has [TS]

02:01:36   told me that they're going to give me [TS]

02:01:37   another car next year not a Julia [TS]

02:01:39   something else we'll see if it comes to [TS]

02:01:41   fruition in part because baby but in [TS]

02:01:45   theory I'll have access to an Alfa Romeo [TS]

02:01:46   my dad actually just bought an [TS]

02:01:49   interesting car which I can tell you two [TS]

02:01:51   about privately later so if he really [TS]

02:01:55   and truly loves me then maybe he'll let [TS]

02:01:57   me review them easier to get your car [TS]

02:01:59   from manufacturer I I think you might be [TS]

02:02:01   right and you haven't even met my dad [TS]

02:02:03   you know I only have one question it is [TS]

02:02:06   not white last time yeah it's silver [TS]

02:02:10   it's just shiny white no it's [TS]

02:02:12   oh god you're the worst but I'm saying [TS]

02:02:15   like there is a way in which I can [TS]

02:02:19   probably eke out a couple more videos [TS]

02:02:21   and if I have a handful of videos under [TS]

02:02:23   my belt maybe it's possible to get [TS]

02:02:26   access to cars I wouldn't already have [TS]

02:02:28   access to and I've actually had a couple [TS]

02:02:30   people reach out via Twitter which is [TS]

02:02:31   extremely kind and nice of them and say [TS]

02:02:33   hey if you want to do my you know [TS]

02:02:35   genuinely interesting car I'm happy to [TS]

02:02:37   do it and that works for regular car [TS]

02:02:40   reviews I don't know if I'm comfortable [TS]

02:02:42   with that because God forbid I broke [TS]

02:02:43   something like then what you know or if [TS]

02:02:46   I ran into somebody then what you know [TS]

02:02:48   so I'm not entirely comfortable with [TS]

02:02:51   that or at least not now but it's been [TS]

02:02:53   extremely flattering that somebody would [TS]

02:02:54   be you know willing to even entertain [TS]

02:02:56   the idea so who knows maybe this will be [TS]

02:02:59   a one and done thing and I'll be [TS]

02:03:01   embarrassed about it in a month or maybe [TS]

02:03:03   even an hour after its posted but so far [TS]

02:03:07   I'm learning and having fun and I know [TS]

02:03:10   it's very like kumbaya and touchy-feely [TS]

02:03:11   but that's really the most I can ask for [TS]

02:03:13   at the moment you know all right let me [TS]

02:03:15   let me you know pose an alternative path [TS]

02:03:17   here so you know a you you waffled a [TS]

02:03:22   minute ago about whether you'd even [TS]

02:03:24   release this video you definitely should [TS]

02:03:25   produce this video because the way you [TS]

02:03:27   get better at making videos is by making [TS]

02:03:31   videos like this you know just like [TS]

02:03:33   everything else like you're not gonna [TS]

02:03:35   get good at something if you do it twice [TS]

02:03:38   a year when you get a press car like [TS]

02:03:40   that's not that's not going to be enough [TS]

02:03:42   you should actually consider doing [TS]

02:03:45   reviews of other cars boring cars other [TS]

02:03:48   things like that aren't cars you know [TS]

02:03:51   review helicopters I don't care like [TS]

02:03:52   just review if this is a thing you want [TS]

02:03:55   to get good at doing you have to [TS]

02:03:57   construct ways to do it more often [TS]

02:03:59   because otherwise you're never going to [TS]

02:04:02   be able to create the kind of thing you [TS]

02:04:05   want to create if you're not getting [TS]

02:04:07   more experience like you know per unit [TS]

02:04:10   of time like doing one of these a year [TS]

02:04:12   is not gonna be enough so if you [TS]

02:04:14   actually want this to be a thing that [TS]

02:04:16   you get good at and that you do on a [TS]

02:04:18   regular basis do more of it find ways to [TS]

02:04:20   do more of it and maybe that's just [TS]

02:04:23   reviewing boring cars sometimes you know [TS]

02:04:25   like just [TS]

02:04:26   like if you make yourself a deal like in [TS]

02:04:28   a review like one car a month and then [TS]

02:04:31   try to figure out like how do you even [TS]

02:04:32   do that [TS]

02:04:33   how do you get set up for that what how [TS]

02:04:36   how much effort do you have to make this [TS]

02:04:39   fit within in order to be able to afford [TS]

02:04:41   time wise to do it once per month set [TS]

02:04:44   that system in motion and whether that's [TS]

02:04:46   like you could have something like what [TS]

02:04:48   if you like get friendly with a local [TS]

02:04:50   used-car dealer and whatever they have a [TS]

02:04:52   cool used car in you know yeah you give [TS]

02:04:54   them you give them like some small my [TS]

02:04:56   money and they let you borrow it for for [TS]

02:04:58   a few days you know cuz then it's no [TS]

02:05:00   sweat off their back it's use anyway you [TS]

02:05:02   know like bar for a few days maybe you [TS]

02:05:04   like promote their dealership at the end [TS]

02:05:05   of it or something you know like they're [TS]

02:05:07   like there are ways to solve this [TS]

02:05:09   problem and and there are ways if you [TS]

02:05:11   want to only review cars and you don't [TS]

02:05:14   want to borrow our friends cars there [TS]

02:05:15   are ways around that like there are [TS]

02:05:17   things that you can do here and you know [TS]

02:05:19   if that's not enough for you like first [TS]

02:05:22   of all review your car hello like well [TS]

02:05:26   my car is old I know what there's a lot [TS]

02:05:29   of people who who are wanting to buy [TS]

02:05:32   used BMWs and wants to know which ones [TS]

02:05:34   are good none and which ones have a lot [TS]

02:05:37   of expensive work that need to be done [TS]

02:05:39   well exactly people want it like you're [TS]

02:05:42   not gonna compete with like you know the [TS]

02:05:45   the pros for like getting all the high [TS]

02:05:48   profile views for every brand new car [TS]

02:05:50   people are gonna go to the big reviewers [TS]

02:05:52   for that where you can compete is on [TS]

02:05:55   things the big reviewers aren't spending [TS]

02:05:56   time on so you can compete with all the [TS]

02:05:59   crazy cars you have you have access to [TS]

02:06:00   in your everyday life and there's gonna [TS]

02:06:02   be someone looking for that and you can [TS]

02:06:04   use those like lower profile lower [TS]

02:06:07   traffic lower pressure videos to build [TS]

02:06:10   your skills with so that on the off [TS]

02:06:13   chance that you do get some kind of [TS]

02:06:15   awesome new press car that is higher [TS]

02:06:17   profile and expensive and fancy you will [TS]

02:06:20   already have built the skills so you [TS]

02:06:22   won't have to be learning on that one [TS]

02:06:24   build the skills up in like you know a [TS]

02:06:26   more like training wheels kind of [TS]

02:06:28   environment where the stakes are lower [TS]

02:06:30   and you can do it more often and then [TS]

02:06:32   you can be ready for like when something [TS]

02:06:34   big happens yeah I completely agree with [TS]

02:06:36   you and and I think just looking at my [TS]

02:06:39   network for lack of a better term that [TS]

02:06:40   sounds so LinkedIn but you know maybe I [TS]

02:06:43   could get some seat time in in either [TS]

02:06:45   your car underscores cars and you know [TS]

02:06:47   people you know exactly every [TS]

02:06:50   conversation I have here telling me [TS]

02:06:52   about one of your friends with a cool [TS]

02:06:53   car like you know so many car people [TS]

02:06:56   like this is not a hard thing for you to [TS]

02:06:58   do if you if you wanted to set this up [TS]

02:07:00   you could very easily set this up [TS]

02:07:02   also that and here's here's my car yeah [TS]

02:07:05   Aaron's car your car your you know your [TS]

02:07:07   parents cars all your friends cars you [TS]

02:07:10   can happily drive mine if you can get [TS]

02:07:11   yourself here somehow like that's this [TS]

02:07:14   is totally a thing that you can do it is [TS]

02:07:17   not that hard if you if you want if you [TS]

02:07:20   want to get yourself set up with us you [TS]

02:07:21   already have a pretty good networking [TS]

02:07:23   place to do it it's a big time [TS]

02:07:26   commitment but developing any new skill [TS]

02:07:28   like this is going to be so you know if [TS]

02:07:30   you if you want to do it [TS]

02:07:32   figure out a way to do it set it up you [TS]

02:07:34   know make it a habit and that's how you [TS]

02:07:36   go get good at it I'm not saying like [TS]

02:07:39   I'm not saying that you're gonna make [TS]

02:07:40   bad stuff like what I'm saying is I know [TS]

02:07:43   what you're going for and you're not [TS]

02:07:46   gonna be able to you're not gonna be [TS]

02:07:47   able to achieve what the level you want [TS]

02:07:49   to achieve unless you do it regularly [TS]

02:07:51   unless you make a habit of it then [TS]

02:07:53   you're gonna develop the skills to do it [TS]

02:07:55   over time but you have to start doing [TS]

02:07:58   that and you're not gonna do that if you [TS]

02:07:59   only get one car a year yeah yeah I [TS]

02:08:02   completely agree with everything you [TS]

02:08:03   said and and you know Aaron and I've [TS]

02:08:06   talked about it a bit and you know we've [TS]

02:08:07   talked about you know is this worth [TS]

02:08:09   spending money on you know outside of [TS]

02:08:11   Final Cut Pro obviously like is it worth [TS]

02:08:12   me getting you know $100 laughs Mike and [TS]

02:08:15   you know maybe a multi-hundred dollar [TS]

02:08:16   like XLR portable recorder and and the [TS]

02:08:19   answer is we don't know but okay stop [TS]

02:08:21   right there this stuff is really cheap [TS]

02:08:23   you don't need to spend much money they [TS]

02:08:24   what you need is what you need is an [TS]

02:08:26   iPhone maybe a gimbal for it and some [TS]

02:08:31   kind of small mic that you can clip to [TS]

02:08:33   your shirt rand record but those are [TS]

02:08:35   surprised if you don't if you don't want [TS]

02:08:36   something fancy and wireless those with [TS]

02:08:38   the SL arse you can go really cheap and [TS]

02:08:40   it works oh there you go but my point is [TS]

02:08:42   just so like you know what what both [TS]

02:08:44   time and in financial commitment is [TS]

02:08:47   worth is this worth and on the surface [TS]

02:08:50   the conservative answer is not a single [TS]

02:08:53   sent in not a single minute but it's not [TS]

02:08:55   quite that simple right because what if [TS]

02:08:57   like it and I was talking Aaron about [TS]

02:08:59   this and and this is probably going to [TS]

02:09:01   be embarrassing to say at some point in [TS]

02:09:04   my life but I'm gonna say it anyway [TS]

02:09:05   suddenly this became analogue what if [TS]

02:09:09   this becomes another like livelihood for [TS]

02:09:13   for me and my family and what if doing [TS]

02:09:17   the podcast in doing these videos is [TS]

02:09:19   enough to fund our existence and what if [TS]

02:09:22   then I didn't have to go to a job' job [TS]

02:09:25   every day and what if I could then spend [TS]

02:09:29   more time with my family you know like [TS]

02:09:30   that's it's a moonshot I don't think [TS]

02:09:32   that'll ever ever ever ever happen but [TS]

02:09:34   why wouldn't I just give it a whirl and [TS]

02:09:36   see see what happens you know because [TS]

02:09:39   and I'm basically repeating imperative [TS]

02:09:41   what you said Marco back to you but [TS]

02:09:43   that's kind of the way I'm looking at it [TS]

02:09:45   right now is who knows what if I have a [TS]

02:09:47   bit of a knack for this like I I feel [TS]

02:09:49   like there's something here and it's not [TS]

02:09:52   gonna be mature and it's gonna have [TS]

02:09:53   problems but why not to use a underscore [TS]

02:09:57   ISM why not unpack this a little bit and [TS]

02:09:59   see what I come up with cuz maybe [TS]

02:10:02   maybe I've got this I mean if you really [TS]

02:10:05   want to go for the moon shot of the moon [TS]

02:10:06   shot what if I end up on Top Gear [TS]

02:10:08   America in ten years like again that I [TS]

02:10:10   understand how preposterous and comical [TS]

02:10:12   that is but who knows like why should I [TS]

02:10:15   say I can't do that you never know [TS]

02:10:17   weirder things have happened yeah I mean [TS]

02:10:20   look you man [TS]

02:10:22   worst-case scenario you have a really [TS]

02:10:25   cool fulfilling hobby that you really [TS]

02:10:26   enjoy yeah exactly [TS]

02:10:27   that's the worst worst case scenario you [TS]

02:10:30   get to film cars and talk about them you [TS]

02:10:31   do that anyway like if you happen to be [TS]

02:10:37   able to turn this hobby into a business [TS]

02:10:38   cool that's bonus but either way it's [TS]

02:10:41   good like either way it's gonna make you [TS]

02:10:44   happy to do it and look everybody has [TS]

02:10:45   hobbies John plays destiny you can shoot [TS]

02:10:47   car videos right John take me back to [TS]

02:10:51   earth am I am I crazy I was just gonna [TS]

02:10:54   say it's making me feel old to hear [TS]

02:10:57   people whose spirits haven't been [TS]

02:10:58   crushed by life yeah John answer ever [TS]

02:11:03   optimism [TS]

02:11:05   do play destiny and I make videos of me [TS]

02:11:07   playing destiny and it's a fulfilling [TS]

02:11:09   hobby wait do you have like a channel [TS]

02:11:11   where you put those yeah rip we're on [TS]

02:11:14   the Internet [TS]

02:11:15   ii-i'll have you know I have dozens of [TS]

02:11:18   using Sufis do you really like put these [TS]

02:11:22   online somewhere I have a youtube [TS]

02:11:24   channel it's been mentioned on this show [TS]

02:11:26   we did you were here yes yes even I knew [TS]

02:11:28   that and I have no memory there is user [TS]

02:11:30   siracusa there we go yeah that's you or [TS]

02:11:33   somebody who's posing as you and all the [TS]

02:11:35   plays destiny mm-hmm well plays doesn't [TS]

02:11:38   mean just the way I play it [TS]

02:11:40   let me tell you the videos are [TS]

02:11:41   action-packed 113 views Wow that's right [TS]

02:11:45   Wow oh you have a lot here I've been [TS]

02:11:48   doing it for a while since that's anyone [TS]

02:11:49   you know you're gonna have to edit out [TS]

02:11:51   all the times I mentioned gray because I [TS]

02:11:53   think there are times that he actually [TS]

02:11:55   does listen to this show and I don't [TS]

02:11:56   know what I said about him it was all [TS]

02:11:58   intended to be intended to be [TS]

02:12:02   complimentary but if he's if he's smart [TS]

02:12:04   he'll he'll pounce on me for using the [TS]

02:12:07   phrase lose the plot and say haha now [TS]

02:12:09   you're using British isms actually [TS]

02:12:10   that's true he'll jump on it straight [TS]

02:12:11   away his first videos were crap - he [TS]

02:12:15   just he just didn't publish them or [TS]

02:12:17   maybe he did I think it was mentioned on [TS]

02:12:19   an old hif aside like that you have to [TS]

02:12:21   keep your first really crappy video and [TS]

02:12:22   your channel you can't delete it [TS]

02:12:23   like you know like you you're comparing [TS]

02:12:26   yourself somebody who's been doing this [TS]

02:12:27   for years alright so like everyone [TS]

02:12:29   starts out crappy and if you only make [TS]

02:12:31   one video a year you're gonna be crappy [TS]

02:12:33   for a long time if you do it if you make [TS]

02:12:36   this a new thing that you do on a [TS]

02:12:37   regular basis you have a much better [TS]

02:12:39   chance of getting better over time yeah [TS]

02:12:41   yeah and and and I would say and again [TS]

02:12:43   like this is me telling myself this is [TS]

02:12:45   much anything else don't focus on the [TS]

02:12:47   gear the gear is not your problem you [TS]

02:12:50   can do everything you need with an [TS]

02:12:51   iPhone that's it that's all you need you [TS]

02:12:54   everything else is bonus like it'd be [TS]

02:12:56   nice to have a little bit better you [TS]

02:12:59   know audio input it's a little closer to [TS]

02:13:00   your mouth if you're gonna be on camera [TS]

02:13:02   otherwise like that's you don't really [TS]

02:13:04   need that much you don't think about the [TS]

02:13:06   hundreds of dollars on audio interface [TS]

02:13:09   and stuff you don't need it also you [TS]

02:13:10   already own one but you don't need it [TS]

02:13:14   like you only got the the content of the [TS]

02:13:18   video [TS]

02:13:18   the video footage itself the writing of [TS]

02:13:23   the video the the timing and the editing [TS]

02:13:25   and the cutting and what you're saying [TS]

02:13:27   is way more important than the equipment [TS]

02:13:29   you have and the fact is the iPhone that [TS]

02:13:33   you already will have anyway is the best [TS]

02:13:36   video camera in the world for this type [TS]

02:13:38   of thing most of the time like not not [TS]

02:13:40   all the time like there's you can have [TS]

02:13:42   specialized things and pros and [TS]

02:13:43   everything but like if you want to just [TS]

02:13:45   make a video as a newcomer to the field [TS]

02:13:47   just use your iPhone it has everything [TS]

02:13:49   you need built-in you already own it [TS]

02:13:50   spend $0 just use the iPhone yeah and so [TS]

02:13:53   the stuff I did I did with a GoPro and [TS]

02:13:56   old GoPro that I borrowed from work and [TS]

02:13:58   my iPhone and and there are a couple of [TS]

02:14:01   things like I'll do voiceovers with the [TS]

02:14:02   good mic which is going to be jarring [TS]

02:14:04   because it's gonna be so much better [TS]

02:14:05   than the stuff I filmed live but [TS]

02:14:08   whatever but I and I recorded the [TS]

02:14:11   exhaust note a couple of times with my [TS]

02:14:12   good mic just to get a really good you [TS]

02:14:15   know like the the beginning of this [TS]

02:14:16   preview is actually the exhaust as [TS]

02:14:19   recorded with the mic I'm speaking to [TS]

02:14:20   you with now which I'm sure it's wrong [TS]

02:14:22   in some way or another because it's [TS]

02:14:23   probably not the right mic for it but [TS]

02:14:25   whatever it was just your mic is not [TS]

02:14:27   filled with exhaust yeah I mean whatever [TS]

02:14:30   right but you see it was like a GoPro in [TS]

02:14:34   an iPhone and my podcasting mic to your [TS]

02:14:37   point I am 98% of the way there the only [TS]

02:14:40   problem I haven't really solved for is [TS]

02:14:42   when the iPhone is several feet away [TS]

02:14:45   from my body [TS]

02:14:47   and I'm doing a live discussion and by [TS]

02:14:51   that I mean you know I'm recording both [TS]

02:14:52   video and audio and I'm going to keep [TS]

02:14:54   both the video in the audio that's the [TS]

02:14:56   thing I haven't solved for and that's [TS]

02:14:57   what's gonna sound like garbage in this [TS]

02:14:59   video unless I like overdub or whatever [TS]

02:15:01   the term is that actors do if I dub over [TS]

02:15:03   myself and try to review or whatever it [TS]

02:15:07   is yeah so I try to like match my exact [TS]

02:15:09   don't do that delivery that I did at the [TS]

02:15:12   time but I do it with my podcast mic and [TS]

02:15:15   I don't think I'm capable of it I'll [TS]

02:15:16   probably give it a shot just to see if [TS]

02:15:17   it gets even close but I don't think I'm [TS]

02:15:19   wanted like that's incredibly hard like [TS]

02:15:22   it and I think like you have to be a [TS]

02:15:24   very experienced actor probably to be [TS]

02:15:25   able to have any chance of doing that [TS]

02:15:26   well I'm sure you're right yeah but you [TS]

02:15:28   should get Declan to dub over [TS]

02:15:30   because that would make a good yeah [TS]

02:15:33   maybe I'm assuming I'm assuming your [TS]

02:15:35   that your overdubbing Quadrifoglio with [TS]

02:15:37   a haven't done it yet I haven't done it [TS]

02:15:41   yet but I plan to do it at least the [TS]

02:15:43   first it's like slowed down the video [TS]

02:15:44   slightly like match it up so you look [TS]

02:15:46   all weird the secret to a good audio for [TS]

02:15:50   this purpose like you can get integrated [TS]

02:15:53   details but basically none of them [TS]

02:15:55   matter as much as get a mic close to [TS]

02:15:58   your mouth and it matters way less what [TS]

02:16:01   that mic is how good it is like just get [TS]

02:16:03   something that can be close to your [TS]

02:16:05   mouth because even a really good mic [TS]

02:16:07   even if you get like a really nice fancy [TS]

02:16:08   shotgun mic that that's made for this [TS]

02:16:10   purpose it does not sound nearly as good [TS]

02:16:12   as a cheap lavalier next to your face [TS]

02:16:15   well in the stopgap that I used which [TS]

02:16:18   you're going to yell at me for and [TS]

02:16:19   you're right is I used actually one of [TS]

02:16:22   my ear pods so I have one air pot in my [TS]

02:16:24   ear and that was what the audio is for [TS]

02:16:25   and it sounds like a telephone call [TS]

02:16:27   which is okay but it's a lot better than [TS]

02:16:31   me because the the phone was the fun [TS]

02:16:33   probably 10 feet away for a lot of the [TS]

02:16:35   stuff that I filmed and so left with [TS]

02:16:37   just the phone mic it would have been [TS]

02:16:39   nothing but like wind and a dim faint [TS]

02:16:41   version of me and so it was the best I [TS]

02:16:44   could do without spending any money but [TS]

02:16:46   I can tell you right now that if if this [TS]

02:16:49   gets posted which it did I intend to [TS]

02:16:51   post it I guarantee that I'm gonna get a [TS]

02:16:53   bunch of complaints about the audio and [TS]

02:16:54   they're gonna be there because the audio [TS]

02:16:56   is gonna sound like garbage for the [TS]

02:16:57   stuff that I filmed quote-unquote in [TS]

02:16:58   person but it doesn't matter like don't [TS]

02:17:01   know and that's why I'm just rolling [TS]

02:17:02   just time and what you can do that's [TS]

02:17:05   probably your cheapest option really [TS]

02:17:06   without having to buy much of anything [TS]

02:17:08   you're gonna have to buy a probably a [TS]

02:17:10   wire live probably a wired lavalier mic [TS]

02:17:12   that's fine they're really cheap they're [TS]

02:17:14   like you know under 50 bucks for a even [TS]

02:17:17   halfway decent wire wired lavalier and [TS]

02:17:20   what I suggest you do is plug it into [TS]

02:17:22   something that can record the audio [TS]

02:17:23   separately from the video that we don't [TS]

02:17:24   to worry about that and then you can [TS]

02:17:26   sync it up in Final Cut you can sync up [TS]

02:17:28   the audio I think automatically with [TS]

02:17:30   with the video somehow it's it syncs up [TS]

02:17:32   there's a way to do that and then and [TS]

02:17:35   and you know you're doing such short [TS]

02:17:36   clips that like drift is not going to be [TS]

02:17:38   a noticeable problem in this time [TS]

02:17:39   duration that you're doing yeah the [TS]

02:17:41   other thing I would say is one thing to [TS]

02:17:43   consider for [TS]

02:17:44   what is recording that thing you know it [TS]

02:17:46   can be an old iPhone a second one like [TS]

02:17:49   don't if you can't if you don't have [TS]

02:17:50   like a long enough oh oh oh interesting [TS]

02:17:52   point yeah if you don't have a long [TS]

02:17:53   enough eight inch cable to lightning [TS]

02:17:55   adapter to nominal to fit into the new [TS]

02:17:57   iPhone yeah I'm with it just use it use [TS]

02:17:59   like an iPhone five that and you know [TS]

02:18:01   run voice memos as you plug in a wire to [TS]

02:18:04   lavaliere to its headphone jack that's [TS]

02:18:05   compatible with it like that's a thing [TS]

02:18:07   you can do too because all iPhones can [TS]

02:18:09   be audio recorders like that's that's [TS]

02:18:13   gonna be better than what you have now [TS]

02:18:14   like it's gonna be easier the other [TS]

02:18:16   thing or you know you can get something [TS]

02:18:17   like a zoom h1 which is like this little [TS]

02:18:20   tiny thing you could like either I mean [TS]

02:18:22   it's it's not invisible like you know [TS]

02:18:24   you but you could like put it in a shirt [TS]

02:18:25   pocket at least or somewhere near your [TS]

02:18:28   mouth that is nearer than an iPhone and [TS]

02:18:30   it's like it's you know it's kind of [TS]

02:18:31   like a standalone recorder you can also [TS]

02:18:33   run a wired lavalier into an H ones line [TS]

02:18:36   in Jack that's that's a thing a lot of [TS]

02:18:38   people do it's like there's there's lots [TS]

02:18:40   of options here that rant that range [TS]

02:18:42   from free because you already have the [TS]

02:18:44   stuff to like under a hundred bucks yeah [TS]

02:18:47   and you can go crazy you can go to you [TS]

02:18:49   can go way higher than that but you [TS]

02:18:50   don't need to like they don't even like [TS]

02:18:52   I would even say just don't like don't [TS]

02:18:54   mess with that because it's so like it's [TS]

02:18:56   so much more important now to get the [TS]

02:18:58   other basics right this is where I went [TS]

02:19:00   totally wrong with mine like I got the [TS]

02:19:02   fancy camera and the fancy tripod and I [TS]

02:19:05   even bought like an iPad teleprompting [TS]

02:19:07   mount I thought about doing that yeah I [TS]

02:19:09   could use a cheap one skis teleprompt [TS]

02:19:12   plus like I I got all this crazy stuff [TS]

02:19:16   so I could like have teleprompter so I [TS]

02:19:18   could be looking at the camera while I'm [TS]

02:19:20   reading my text editing at my laptop [TS]

02:19:21   with the notes on it and everything like [TS]

02:19:22   I got this crazy setup I and I ended up [TS]

02:19:25   using most of it 0 times or one time to [TS]

02:19:28   make a mediocre video and I didn't make [TS]

02:19:30   a video after that it's like if I make [TS]

02:19:31   videos again I'm going to instead just [TS]

02:19:35   use my iPhone in the gimbal that I also [TS]

02:19:37   bought for some reason like I'm just [TS]

02:19:39   gonna use it in that and should shoot [TS]

02:19:42   myself and maybe I'll have a lavalier [TS]

02:19:44   mic to give myself better audio but [TS]

02:19:46   that's as far as I would go probably in [TS]

02:19:48   that department just because like yeah [TS]

02:19:50   if I'm going to make videos again what I [TS]

02:19:53   need is to make the process lower [TS]

02:19:55   friction so I'd do it more [TS]

02:19:57   and the only way I'm gonna do that is by [TS]

02:19:59   making it basically all iPhone and [TS]

02:20:01   making it informal you know basically [TS]

02:20:03   like making it like periscope you know [TS]

02:20:05   or Instagram lie like that's because I [TS]

02:20:08   have no problem doing those because they [TS]

02:20:09   were informal and all iPhone based so I [TS]

02:20:12   guess my use need to do that right and [TS]

02:20:13   so you need to find out what that is for [TS]

02:20:15   you like find out how to make yourself [TS]

02:20:17   do more videos so that you can get [TS]

02:20:19   better at making videos so that when you [TS]

02:20:21   get an opportunity like this you can do [TS]

02:20:22   you can do the kind that you actually [TS]

02:20:23   want to do yeah the only equipment I'm [TS]

02:20:25   currently planning to buy if any is a [TS]

02:20:28   lavalier mic of some sort and maybe a [TS]

02:20:31   gimbal and that's it like that's all I [TS]

02:20:32   feel like I really need at this point [TS]

02:20:34   because I can borrow a GoPro from work [TS]

02:20:36   or there's a possibility that a listener [TS]

02:20:38   might have a actually a similar [TS]

02:20:41   generation one that that they're not [TS]

02:20:43   using anymore so he had offered to send [TS]

02:20:45   it to me so I have a GoPro I'll have a [TS]

02:20:50   I'll have my phone maybe like some sort [TS]

02:20:53   of mount that I can mount between the [TS]

02:20:55   headrests like if I get really serious [TS]

02:20:57   something that I can mount the GoPro to [TS]

02:21:00   between the headrest because basically [TS]

02:21:01   the only mount I have right now is the [TS]

02:21:02   suction cup mount which is great for [TS]

02:21:05   taking video of me but less great for [TS]

02:21:07   taking video of what's going out the [TS]

02:21:09   front of the car but anyway the point is [TS]

02:21:12   I I agree with you that I there's very [TS]

02:21:15   little I intend to spend money on unless [TS]

02:21:18   I have a compelling reason to which is [TS]

02:21:20   to say things are going well and if [TS]

02:21:22   things are going well then great why not [TS]

02:21:24   throw money at throw money at it but if [TS]

02:21:26   things aren't things are as I expect [TS]

02:21:28   which is to say it was a fun blip on the [TS]

02:21:30   radar for me and the people that care [TS]

02:21:31   about me then whatever [TS]
