Hypercritical

9: No iLife is an Island

00:00:02   this is hypercritical weekly talkshow [TS]

00:00:04   ruminating on exactly what is wrong in [TS]

00:00:07   the world of Apple and related [TS]

00:00:09   technologies and businesses nothing is [TS]

00:00:10   so perfect that it cannot be complained [TS]

00:00:12   or criticized about by John siracusa [TS]

00:00:15   it's my co-host I'm Dan Benjamin we'd [TS]

00:00:18   like to thank [TS]

00:00:18   freshbooks comm online invoicing and [TS]

00:00:21   Rackspace comm for sponsoring this show [TS]

00:00:24   and as I mentioned this is episode [TS]

00:00:26   number 8 9 rather or 8 could be 9 it's 9 [TS]

00:00:33   let's go with 9 it's episode 9 and today [TS]

00:00:38   we're going to be talking about well [TS]

00:00:41   first we have follow-up but do we want [TS]

00:00:43   to announce the topic sure yeah [TS]

00:00:45   today we're going to do follow-up on [TS]

00:00:48   both topics from last show the iPad 2 [TS]

00:00:51   and the Apple strategy tax and then our [TS]

00:00:53   main topic which will squeeze in if [TS]

00:00:55   there's time is no I life is an island [TS]

00:00:58   yeah this has been on the list for a [TS]

00:01:01   long time since the beginning this is [TS]

00:01:04   one I'm finally glad we with it's just [TS]

00:01:05   the right time to get to it because [TS]

00:01:07   everybody's applauding Apple right now [TS]

00:01:08   as they should be great new stuff coming [TS]

00:01:11   out I think but this they they might [TS]

00:01:14   have gotten some of this wrong so we'll [TS]

00:01:15   talk about that but first we got to do [TS]

00:01:17   this follow up yep did you agree or did [TS]

00:01:20   you order your iPad 2 so my wife [TS]

00:01:23   actually I don't think has officially [TS]

00:01:25   picked which model she's getting [TS]

00:01:26   narrowed down but she went to the store [TS]

00:01:28   today for some reason just to I don't [TS]

00:01:31   know if she was going to buy it on the [TS]

00:01:33   spot or she just wanted to see one or [TS]

00:01:34   whatever but as soon as she saw the [TS]

00:01:35   lines she just turned around and came [TS]

00:01:37   back [TS]

00:01:37   what were the lines like out your way [TS]

00:01:39   I'm guessing pretty bad yeah and and she [TS]

00:01:41   was annoyed that they're not selling [TS]

00:01:43   them or even showing them apparently [TS]

00:01:44   until 5 p.m. right I don't know there [TS]

00:01:46   wasn't any but it was just a giant line [TS]

00:01:48   and she wasn't going to sit there for [TS]

00:01:50   three hours and waiting it to get in [TS]

00:01:52   either buy one or look at one at five so [TS]

00:01:53   I told her not to bother I told her [TS]

00:01:55   we'll wait until the weekend and see [TS]

00:01:56   what it's like but she could not resist [TS]

00:01:59   she was drawn to the store so no I don't [TS]

00:02:01   have one yet maybe the next time we talk [TS]

00:02:04   to you what about ordering went to you [TS]

00:02:06   would you ever consider that no I [TS]

00:02:07   figured out you know pick one up in [TS]

00:02:10   person I didn't want to deal with [TS]

00:02:11   waiting for it to come in the mail [TS]

00:02:13   plus I've got packs all this weekend so [TS]

00:02:15   I'm not going to be around right she'll [TS]

00:02:16   probably get one so by next week I think [TS]

00:02:18   we'll have one assuming stock holds up [TS]

00:02:19   right don't know what the inventory [TS]

00:02:22   situation always a question so a little [TS]

00:02:25   bit of iPad to follow up from talking [TS]

00:02:27   about it last week [TS]

00:02:28   oh one of the things that I meant to [TS]

00:02:30   mention that I saw on Twitter comment [TS]

00:02:32   supplement Twitter I wish I could [TS]

00:02:33   remember who it was because I thought it [TS]

00:02:34   was very smart but it was during the [TS]

00:02:36   keynote when they were showing the turn [TS]

00:02:38   the keynote doing during the press event [TS]

00:02:40   where they were showing that introducing [TS]

00:02:42   the iPad 2 and someone tweeted almost [TS]

00:02:44   immediately when they showed that Smart [TS]

00:02:46   Cover thing with the magnets yeah that [TS]

00:02:47   Apple will make more money off selling [TS]

00:02:49   those covers than any other tablet maker [TS]

00:02:51   will make off selling their tablets Wow [TS]

00:02:53   and that is so true because the margins [TS]

00:02:55   on those covers must be just [TS]

00:02:56   unbelievable especially that's $70 [TS]

00:02:57   leather one oh yeah all accessories are [TS]

00:03:01   just you know money factories like it [TS]

00:03:03   maybe it's not as Extreme as it is like [TS]

00:03:05   Best Buy where they are Best Buy sells [TS]

00:03:07   you $2,000 TV they make $20 in profit [TS]

00:03:10   but they sell you a $40 cable and they [TS]

00:03:12   make $30 in profit so basically selling [TS]

00:03:14   that cable is more profit than selling [TS]

00:03:16   that gigantic TV a better analogy might [TS]

00:03:18   even be the movie theater popcorn and [TS]

00:03:21   drinks and snacks which are oh yeah you [TS]

00:03:22   know nine dollars for a drink it cost [TS]

00:03:25   them a fraction of a cent so where [TS]

00:03:27   company I mean but it's different in [TS]

00:03:29   Apple Apple so they can huge money on [TS]

00:03:30   both of them but you just look at those [TS]

00:03:32   accessories man you know like it's [TS]

00:03:34   unbelievable and and it came up back to [TS]

00:03:35   me again this week because a friend of [TS]

00:03:37   mine at work was asking me about I was [TS]

00:03:40   thinking about getting an HDMI adapter [TS]

00:03:43   for an iPad or but then you know it's [TS]

00:03:46   $40 so he get that HDMI adapter for the [TS]

00:03:49   iPad so we could see his iPads picture [TS]

00:03:51   on his television like with the MLD APIs [TS]

00:03:52   or whatever yeah or he'd get an Apple TV [TS]

00:03:55   for $100 so the HDMI adapter it's not [TS]

00:03:59   half the price of the Apple TV but it's [TS]

00:04:00   creeping up on being half the price of [TS]

00:04:02   an Apple TV or it's half the bicep like [TS]

00:04:04   a refurb Apple TV mm-hmm that's a that's [TS]

00:04:07   a strange decision to be making well I [TS]

00:04:09   could I could buy this piece of plastic [TS]

00:04:10   and metal with no active components or I [TS]

00:04:12   could buy an entire Apple TV brand you [TS]

00:04:14   know it's a toss-up kind of because you [TS]

00:04:16   know with the cable yeah it's half the [TS]

00:04:18   price but then you don't get to do [TS]

00:04:19   things wirelessly with the Apple TV you [TS]

00:04:21   accomplish what you wanted which is [TS]

00:04:22   showing your MLB stuff on your [TS]

00:04:24   big-screen TV but you get a whole Apple [TS]

00:04:26   TV [TS]

00:04:27   yeah it shows the absurdity I mean I [TS]

00:04:29   wonder those things we'll meet in the [TS]

00:04:30   middle like will the apple TV every 179 [TS]

00:04:32   bucks but then like the new you know [TS]

00:04:34   fund report adapter for the iPad 3 is [TS]

00:04:36   gonna be you know 69 I was a $10 [TS]

00:04:38   difference some sort of a singularity [TS]

00:04:42   happening here all and I think my [TS]

00:04:44   brother was the one who noted a while [TS]

00:04:45   back through the new price point for not [TS]

00:04:47   being able to walk out of the Apple [TS]

00:04:48   store with it used to be 30 bucks like [TS]

00:04:50   nothing in the store was less than $30 [TS]

00:04:52   now it seems like it might be increasing [TS]

00:04:54   because that HDMI adapter is 39 I guess [TS]

00:04:57   they're still thanks for $30 sure there [TS]

00:04:58   are like Ana I think the I think the [TS]

00:05:00   iPad dock is 29 do you know if they [TS]

00:05:03   still have that you and they came out [TS]

00:05:04   with a new one they did yeah they came [TS]

00:05:06   out with with a new iPad to dock so [TS]

00:05:09   people are our beloved nerds our good [TS]

00:05:12   friends in chat room are asking if I got [TS]

00:05:15   one I did I ordered it this morning I [TS]

00:05:17   got a 32 gig black Wi-Fi only with the [TS]

00:05:25   gray cover which is a cover it's a [TS]

00:05:30   leadership ya the cover shipped so I'll [TS]

00:05:33   have that Monday I think you can just [TS]

00:05:34   play what I think you just play with [TS]

00:05:35   that by itself it's almost as good as [TS]

00:05:37   another pen you just open and close it [TS]

00:05:39   on top of like I don't know your desk [TS]

00:05:41   right because it won't work with the [TS]

00:05:43   existing iPads but I can try alright I [TS]

00:05:45   also got the HDMI adapter because I the [TS]

00:05:49   way that we capture video on these shows [TS]

00:05:50   one of the one of the ways that we do [TS]

00:05:52   video on the video the video shows that [TS]

00:05:54   we do is using HDMI capture so it would [TS]

00:06:01   be very cool to be able to capture the [TS]

00:06:03   iPad screen directly this way whenever [TS]

00:06:07   we want to demo an iOS app or talk about [TS]

00:06:08   something on iOS we'll be able to do it [TS]

00:06:10   in a very nice way without having to [TS]

00:06:13   worry about glare or shoulder-mounted [TS]

00:06:15   cameras or any of that madness so I got [TS]

00:06:19   you've got out that yeah but otherwise I [TS]

00:06:21   would mean oh we have [TS]

00:06:23   as of tomorrow we're gonna have three [TS]

00:06:25   Apple TV's here one old one and two new [TS]

00:06:27   ones Big Damn MLB app force my hand [TS]

00:06:30   there they come free with your cereal [TS]

00:06:32   now just to get a free Apple TV at the [TS]

00:06:34   bottom of the box of India first [TS]

00:06:36   purchases here's the problem I I could [TS]

00:06:38   watch the MLB I could watch baseball all [TS]

00:06:40   the time and I needed to you know I [TS]

00:06:43   needed to be I did a requirement I had [TS]

00:06:45   to be able to do that and my wife on the [TS]

00:06:47   other hand although she is actually way [TS]

00:06:50   better than me when it comes to playing [TS]

00:06:53   sports she played sports through high [TS]

00:06:55   school and a little bit in college and [TS]

00:06:57   liked it a team where she was on a team [TS]

00:06:59   at her job for a while and I can barely [TS]

00:07:02   throw straight I mean I don't want to [TS]

00:07:04   talk about it but even that she does not [TS]

00:07:07   enjoy watching as much like she could [TS]

00:07:10   call a game like oh I'll say oh that's [TS]

00:07:12   this guy just triple sparrow he should [TS]

00:07:14   have thrown let you know I mean she [TS]

00:07:15   could do the whole thing but she just [TS]

00:07:16   doesn't didn't enjoy it the way that I [TS]

00:07:17   do but so I have to I had to have one [TS]

00:07:20   Apple TV just for the MLB and then the [TS]

00:07:23   other one after this net why didn't you [TS]

00:07:25   tell me Netflix streaming was so good [TS]

00:07:28   every show my dad ever wanna watch is on [TS]

00:07:31   this thing I guess it's good for kids I [TS]

00:07:33   don't know I get most of my kid stuff [TS]

00:07:34   off the DVR but every time I go on to it [TS]

00:07:36   like streaming I'm disappointed by the [TS]

00:07:38   things that I can only get on disc [TS]

00:07:39   because we have a disc subscription to [TS]

00:07:41   and whenever there's something I hear [TS]

00:07:43   about a Michael that's a really old [TS]

00:07:43   movie in its obscure I'm sure that's an [TS]

00:07:45   instant and it's not and it's all it's [TS]

00:07:47   not Netflix as far as all the content [TS]

00:07:49   owners are there's just so much great [TS]

00:07:51   stuff though on there and especially for [TS]

00:07:53   especially for kids that you know they [TS]

00:07:55   they easy sent me this thing I cancelled [TS]

00:07:57   the subscription of him years ago [TS]

00:07:59   and they sent me this thing we you know [TS]

00:08:00   we'd love for you to come back and try [TS]

00:08:02   it out here try have another free months [TS]

00:08:04   so I did the free month and man there's [TS]

00:08:07   so much great stuff out there and it [TS]

00:08:09   works so nice on the Apple TVs and now [TS]

00:08:11   I'm getting get another one else first [TS]

00:08:14   first world problems we may end up with [TS]

00:08:16   one of those eventually but um see if I [TS]

00:08:18   can hold out for the second gen apple TV [TS]

00:08:19   cuz your TiVo will do it right yeah I [TS]

00:08:22   TiVo do my PlayStation will do it my we [TS]

00:08:25   will do it just everything attached to [TS]

00:08:27   my TV will stream Netflix but not MLB [TS]

00:08:31   not a big baseball guy so nobody's [TS]

00:08:33   perfect [TS]

00:08:35   all right onward yeah so the other iPad [TS]

00:08:39   thing that I saw snowball this week for [TS]

00:08:42   some insane reason is this whole CPU [TS]

00:08:44   issue of what's inside an Apple a5 and a [TS]

00:08:49   last show we talked about it and what I [TS]

00:08:53   basically said my recollection is that I [TS]

00:08:55   was relaying a conversation that I had [TS]

00:08:57   with some people from ARS technica about [TS]

00:08:59   some I think it called them dark horse [TS]

00:09:01   theories about what could be in there [TS]

00:09:02   right now I guess I didn't express [TS]

00:09:06   enough that the obvious answer is that [TS]

00:09:08   it's in 89 like that's what everyone [TS]

00:09:09   just assumes it is the reason we have [TS]

00:09:10   this dark aura theory is like well [TS]

00:09:12   wouldn't it be fun to think about what [TS]

00:09:13   what else could possibly happen before [TS]

00:09:15   we know you know and that's when we [TS]

00:09:16   started talking about well it could be [TS]

00:09:18   to a eight cores inside there because [TS]

00:09:19   Apple is conservative and the only [TS]

00:09:21   information we had was some stats on the [TS]

00:09:24   performance we didn't even know if you [TS]

00:09:26   know the battery size was the same it [TS]

00:09:28   was just mostly just speculation but [TS]

00:09:29   then during the week I saw a story after [TS]

00:09:31   story about I don't know they were never [TS]

00:09:33   attributed to any particular person or [TS]

00:09:37   source but just more speculation about [TS]

00:09:39   you know could it be the different core [TS]

00:09:41   and you know I don't know none of them [TS]

00:09:42   had any information either so I don't [TS]

00:09:44   know if we take any blame for that but I [TS]

00:09:47   certainly got a lot of feedback that [TS]

00:09:49   either I shouldn't have been speculating [TS]

00:09:50   without the having enough information or [TS]

00:09:53   that I was totally wrong and shouldn't [TS]

00:09:54   have been insisting that it was 2a [TS]

00:09:56   eights or something this was not my [TS]

00:09:58   theory to begin with it was it was just [TS]

00:10:00   something that we were talking about so [TS]

00:10:02   it took to my knowledge we still don't [TS]

00:10:04   know for certain what it is it's since [TS]

00:10:06   then we have learned a few things one [TS]

00:10:07   thing we learned I think we learned this [TS]

00:10:08   during the show if I'd been paying more [TS]

00:10:10   attention to the chat room was that the [TS]

00:10:11   batteries in the iPad 1 and 2 are the [TS]

00:10:13   same size not physical dimensions wise [TS]

00:10:16   but in terms of power they're both 25 [TS]

00:10:17   watt hours and that's really what [TS]

00:10:18   matters it doesn't really matter how big [TS]

00:10:20   the battery is you just want the power [TS]

00:10:21   rating and from listening to people's [TS]

00:10:27   reviews it seemed like the screens look [TS]

00:10:28   very similar I don't know if they draw [TS]

00:10:30   exactly the same power but they seem to [TS]

00:10:31   be they look the same externally more or [TS]

00:10:34   less right Gruber was even saying that [TS]

00:10:36   they're exactly the same size he goes [TS]

00:10:38   yeah he basically said they are the same [TS]

00:10:40   screen right and all they did was change [TS]

00:10:42   the rim to be a little bit narrower so [TS]

00:10:43   that's why the iPad 2 is smaller so that [TS]

00:10:45   gets back to the whole thing of like [TS]

00:10:47   well if the battery is the same size [TS]

00:10:49   and the screen is the same and [TS]

00:10:52   everything else inside it seems to be at [TS]

00:10:54   least as power-hungry or more than it [TS]

00:10:56   used to be like the GPU is 9x as fast or [TS]

00:10:58   whatever we don't know what power power [TS]

00:11:00   is but the bottom is looking for [TS]

00:11:01   components inside that they could they [TS]

00:11:03   could account for a CPU taking more [TS]

00:11:05   energy is harder right so that's what [TS]

00:11:10   we've learned since last time but that [TS]

00:11:11   doesn't give us any more answers you [TS]

00:11:12   still doesn't tell you whether it's an [TS]

00:11:14   a9 in core and there are two eights [TS]

00:11:15   because they could be a shrink it could [TS]

00:11:17   be you know 32 nanometers and the other [TS]

00:11:19   one was 45 or something like that so you [TS]

00:11:20   have no idea what the power draw is I [TS]

00:11:22   fix it hasn't torn one open as far as I [TS]

00:11:24   know yet so we really don't know what's [TS]

00:11:26   going on in there but 99.9% chance it's [TS]

00:11:29   in a nine core as a eight theory was [TS]

00:11:31   really just an amusing possibility to [TS]

00:11:34   think about before we had any [TS]

00:11:35   information it's too bad that we don't [TS]

00:11:38   have the information now and we get her [TS]

00:11:39   to settle once we're all I thought it [TS]

00:11:40   was funny to look at the Wikipedia page [TS]

00:11:42   because I remember during last show I [TS]

00:11:43   think I pulled up the Wikipedia page and [TS]

00:11:45   it said flat out the Apple a5 you know [TS]

00:11:48   uses the RMA 9 core and in a time [TS]

00:11:52   between last week's show and now that [TS]

00:11:55   page has gone through many many many [TS]

00:11:57   really been watching it random people [TS]

00:11:59   someone I just looked at it in [TS]

00:12:01   preparation for this show and I went [TS]

00:12:02   through the history I'm like wow it's [TS]

00:12:03   just been like an edit war of like [TS]

00:12:04   someone said note it's too late of [TS]

00:12:06   course because I read it on this article [TS]

00:12:07   it's source the story that they heard [TS]

00:12:09   from this thing that and then someone [TS]

00:12:10   changes it back to 89 said no the a [TS]

00:12:12   can't do SMP which is true by the way I [TS]

00:12:14   said they would have to add cache [TS]

00:12:15   coherency you know and apples arm [TS]

00:12:17   license doesn't allow that and then some [TS]

00:12:18   will change it back and say you don't [TS]

00:12:20   know what their license huge edit war at [TS]

00:12:22   one point the Page said the Apple a5 [TS]

00:12:24   contains an a9 core or 2a eight cores [TS]

00:12:28   like they're just coming right out and [TS]

00:12:30   say we have no idea it's either this or [TS]

00:12:31   it's that or it could be something else [TS]

00:12:32   really mm-hmm I should have change I [TS]

00:12:34   feel like editing the page and changing [TS]

00:12:36   it to say the Apple a5 contains some [TS]

00:12:38   sort of computing core like we could [TS]

00:12:41   probably say that's true but at this [TS]

00:12:42   point I think the last time I checked [TS]

00:12:44   the Wikipedia page was saying it was in [TS]

00:12:46   a nine but all these things you know [TS]

00:12:48   they have the little footnotes on [TS]

00:12:49   Wikipedia saying where they're cited [TS]

00:12:50   from they would all cite articles of [TS]

00:12:52   just people guessing like we were on the [TS]

00:12:54   last show so I don't see how that's [TS]

00:12:55   quite a citation but finally is we don't [TS]

00:12:57   know I apologize for any anything that I [TS]

00:13:00   may have done [TS]

00:13:02   to foster this crazy provided [TS]

00:13:05   speculation on the internet because [TS]

00:13:07   agents like a game of telephone and [TS]

00:13:09   eventually you get far enough away from [TS]

00:13:11   whatever the original source was which I [TS]

00:13:13   don't think was us but whoever it was [TS]

00:13:15   eventually the fifth person to report it [TS]

00:13:17   reports it is fact as if someone knows [TS]

00:13:18   something or just flat-out states it as [TS]

00:13:21   if it's you know something that that's [TS]

00:13:23   true right and then people get angry if [TS]

00:13:26   the chatroom is saying that is my fault [TS]

00:13:28   I contend that someone else this it [TS]

00:13:30   wasn't even my theory to begin with [TS]

00:13:31   someone else must have I think this is [TS]

00:13:33   something that people would come up with [TS]

00:13:34   on their own simply because they say if [TS]

00:13:37   it's in a nine core how can they be [TS]

00:13:38   getting ten hours a battery life out of [TS]

00:13:39   it and then it's not um so I think I [TS]

00:13:46   said all we had to say for the iPad 2 DM [TS]

00:13:49   and we'll both have them next week so we [TS]

00:13:51   can talk more about them but I think [TS]

00:13:52   that's been covered well in other places [TS]

00:13:54   the other thing we talked about last [TS]

00:13:56   week is the the Apple strategy tax this [TS]

00:13:59   had even more feedback than the iPad 2 [TS]

00:14:02   stuff thankfully because I think it's a [TS]

00:14:03   lot more media and it was a lot more [TS]

00:14:05   thoughtful and interesting feedback from [TS]

00:14:07   a lot of people most of the feedback [TS]

00:14:08   that I saw said you got it wrong I would [TS]

00:14:14   say it's tough to when you get feedback [TS]

00:14:16   at any issue that's like controversial [TS]

00:14:18   like this or where you're saying [TS]

00:14:19   something bad or something good about [TS]

00:14:20   Apple it tends to pull out the people [TS]

00:14:23   who either are big Apple fans and love [TS]

00:14:25   everything that Apple does and you say [TS]

00:14:26   anything that sounds remotely heartful [TS]

00:14:27   they yell at you or you get the people [TS]

00:14:29   who just hate Apple with a passion [TS]

00:14:30   anytime you say anything remotely bad [TS]

00:14:32   they come out so right on yeah I hate [TS]

00:14:33   Apple Apple killed my dog [TS]

00:14:36   so I got both of those types of emails [TS]

00:14:37   but I think they were in the minority it [TS]

00:14:39   wasn't that an inflammatory of an issue [TS]

00:14:41   mostly what I got were things in the [TS]

00:14:43   middle which were other people being [TS]

00:14:44   thoughtful about it and bringing up you [TS]

00:14:45   know interesting points and I was glad [TS]

00:14:47   to see that so the one point that I [TS]

00:14:51   think I really should have talked about [TS]

00:14:53   both in the article and the podcast that [TS]

00:14:54   didn't get to and it was just because [TS]

00:14:56   it's kind of like sometimes I assumed [TS]

00:14:59   too many things like whatever I'm [TS]

00:15:01   thinking in my head they assume everyone [TS]

00:15:03   else is starting from that same premise [TS]

00:15:04   so one thing that I didn't talk about [TS]

00:15:06   about Apple which I think everybody [TS]

00:15:07   knows but it would have been a good time [TS]

00:15:08   to bring it up was the reasons Apple is [TS]

00:15:11   like this why does Apple enter these [TS]

00:15:13   businesses why does Apple do what it [TS]

00:15:15   does [TS]

00:15:16   why does Apple make iLife why do they [TS]

00:15:18   why did why did it make Safari why don't [TS]

00:15:20   they use flash you know why do they [TS]

00:15:23   start a bookstore why do they do all the [TS]

00:15:24   stuff and it's rooted in some extremely [TS]

00:15:28   logical thinking and basically Apple has [TS]

00:15:30   in the past gotten screwed over when [TS]

00:15:34   they've relied on other companies to do [TS]

00:15:36   things for them and that goes way way [TS]

00:15:38   way way way back in almost every [TS]

00:15:39   possible important point in Apple's [TS]

00:15:42   history you can find this phenomenon [TS]

00:15:43   going on there you know all the way back [TS]

00:15:46   to I think I wrote something years and [TS]

00:15:48   years ago about at the Apple Adobe [TS]

00:15:51   relationship and how Apple really wanted [TS]

00:15:52   Adobe and Microsoft and others to be on [TS]

00:15:54   board with them to the change to this [TS]

00:15:56   new Rhapsody operating system with the [TS]

00:15:57   new next drive api's and those guys said [TS]

00:16:00   yeah no thanks and that was sort of when [TS]

00:16:03   when Apple's power was was at its lowest [TS]

00:16:05   they really just didn't have any clout [TS]

00:16:07   no one everyone thought they were going [TS]

00:16:09   out of business no one want to have [TS]

00:16:10   anything to do with them [TS]

00:16:12   and so they just didn't have the pull to [TS]

00:16:14   talk to these other big companies and [TS]

00:16:16   say please we'd really like to make a [TS]

00:16:17   new operating system with an all new API [TS]

00:16:18   will you please rewrite your all your [TS]

00:16:20   apps we rewrite office we rewrite [TS]

00:16:21   Photoshop and they said no and so that's [TS]

00:16:24   why I have to do the carbon thing with [TS]

00:16:25   Mac os10 and all that stuff but you know [TS]

00:16:29   all the way up the line you can think of [TS]

00:16:30   all they relied on Microsoft to create [TS]

00:16:33   their web browser side Internet Explorer [TS]

00:16:34   but that kind of stagnated relying added [TS]

00:16:38   Adobe to have a Photoshop they basically [TS]

00:16:40   relied on you know relying on other [TS]

00:16:42   companies to make great applications for [TS]

00:16:43   this this iMac that they made you know [TS]

00:16:45   or you know think about relying on other [TS]

00:16:48   companies to make applications for [TS]

00:16:49   digital music players at a certain point [TS]

00:16:50   Apple said we have to show these people [TS]

00:16:52   what what we want to happen no one else [TS]

00:16:54   is going to make the iLife suite for us [TS]

00:16:56   no one else is going to make the [TS]

00:16:57   applications that are going to sell our [TS]

00:16:59   hardware so we're going to do it [TS]

00:17:00   ourselves and show everybody how it's [TS]

00:17:02   done so they made the they made itunes [TS]

00:17:04   they made the iTunes Music Store [TS]

00:17:06   you know they made iLife and said yeah [TS]

00:17:09   this these great computers we have with [TS]

00:17:10   all these features you should make out [TS]

00:17:11   applications like this is what sells [TS]

00:17:13   them and so they made that entire suite [TS]

00:17:14   of stuff I think even started to [TS]

00:17:16   encroach on Microsoft's territory with [TS]

00:17:18   making you know the iWork suite and [TS]

00:17:20   numbers and stuff like that just at this [TS]

00:17:22   point Apple really believes that if you [TS]

00:17:25   want something done right do it yourself [TS]

00:17:26   yeah and you see you see that everywhere [TS]

00:17:29   so this is what's motivating Apple to do [TS]

00:17:33   all these things why does Apple need to [TS]

00:17:34   make a bookstore because they don't want [TS]

00:17:36   to rely on Amazon to be their bookstore [TS]

00:17:38   because every time they rely on somebody [TS]

00:17:39   else that other party lets them down [TS]

00:17:41   lets them down either by not paying as [TS]

00:17:43   much attention to the to Apple's [TS]

00:17:44   platform as Apple thinks it should or by [TS]

00:17:47   making a cruddy product or just by you [TS]

00:17:49   know letting their products stagnate and [TS]

00:17:51   not and just not giving Apple platform [TS]

00:17:54   all they do that they think it deserves [TS]

00:17:56   so they don't even want to get in that [TS]

00:17:58   situation it's the same thing with flash [TS]

00:17:59   they want they don't want people writing [TS]

00:18:02   flash applications and that becoming [TS]

00:18:04   like the platform that they're that is [TS]

00:18:06   running on all their iPhones and stuff [TS]

00:18:07   because what if Adobe loses interest and [TS]

00:18:09   said no really Adobe's make a strategic [TS]

00:18:11   partnership with Google or with [TS]

00:18:13   Microsoft or something and yeah the the [TS]

00:18:15   flash runtime for iOS is going to kind [TS]

00:18:17   of be left behind and we're not really [TS]

00:18:19   interested in updating that I think [TS]

00:18:20   Apple feels like that already happened [TS]

00:18:21   on the Mac because flash in the Mac for [TS]

00:18:23   years and years was much worse than [TS]

00:18:24   flash on Windows in terms of performance [TS]

00:18:26   this still is yeah and and what could [TS]

00:18:29   Apple do please Dobby we really like it [TS]

00:18:31   if you know we don't we don't like it [TS]

00:18:33   when flash is better in windows makes [TS]

00:18:34   Mac's feel slow it's draining the [TS]

00:18:36   batteries down in our lap can you please [TS]

00:18:38   and did you know Apple doesn't have [TS]

00:18:39   control they can do is beg and Apple [TS]

00:18:41   does not want to be in that position and [TS]

00:18:42   the Apple today is way way way more [TS]

00:18:44   powerful than they used to be but [TS]

00:18:45   they're still coming from that place [TS]

00:18:46   they still have that sort of corporate [TS]

00:18:49   baggage of thinking if we rely on anyone [TS]

00:18:53   else we will be let down so we're going [TS]

00:18:56   to do everything ourselves and so that's [TS]

00:18:57   why even though the Kindle is is on iOS [TS]

00:19:00   and is a bookstore Apple say like no [TS]

00:19:01   we're going to do our own because we [TS]

00:19:03   think we can make a better book reader [TS]

00:19:05   and we don't want to rely on those guys [TS]

00:19:07   and that's I think that's an important [TS]

00:19:10   if people aren't familiar with that [TS]

00:19:11   whole psychological factor of the Apple [TS]

00:19:16   s corporate person it may not make much [TS]

00:19:19   sense as to why Apple does all the [TS]

00:19:20   things that it does but that that goes a [TS]

00:19:23   long way towards explaining why Apple [TS]

00:19:24   starts into these businesses we'll just [TS]

00:19:28   remember back before Apple had its own [TS]

00:19:30   successful web browser for example yeah [TS]

00:19:35   they didn't have control of something [TS]

00:19:38   that was so important to their business [TS]

00:19:41   and the thing about it is that like [TS]

00:19:43   Internet Explorer I five for Mac was a [TS]

00:19:45   great web browser it had better CSS [TS]

00:19:47   support than than any browser on any [TS]

00:19:49   other platform it's a lot of the reason [TS]

00:19:50   why web designers flock to the Mac event [TS]

00:19:52   and so you think oh isn't Apple happy [TS]

00:19:56   they've got like the most awesome web [TS]

00:19:57   browser and it's awesome and the things [TS]

00:19:58   that Apple likes like it makes things [TS]

00:20:00   look nicer CSS makes fonts look nice [TS]

00:20:01   it's great you know Apple should be [TS]

00:20:03   happy no matter how good things are [TS]

00:20:05   Apple always is of the mind that yeah [TS]

00:20:08   things are good now like the Kindle app [TS]

00:20:10   is great now and Amazon is putting all [TS]

00:20:12   this money into its iOS stuff now but [TS]

00:20:14   what happens next year the year after [TS]

00:20:16   that the year after that and true to [TS]

00:20:18   form Internet Explorer for the Mac kind [TS]

00:20:21   of started to stagnate and the Mac OS 10 [TS]

00:20:23   version was this ugly Carbon port and it [TS]

00:20:25   was kind of gross and Firefox was now [TS]

00:20:27   just getting off the ground it was not [TS]

00:20:29   really Apple style and so how can you [TS]

00:20:31   have a modern platform that doesn't have [TS]

00:20:32   a web browser it's up to your standards [TS]

00:20:34   these oh this is just another another [TS]

00:20:35   time that Apple is learning the lesson [TS]

00:20:37   of you know let's not let other people [TS]

00:20:39   do is we have to do it ourselves right [TS]

00:20:40   it's all about controlling your own [TS]

00:20:41   destiny in a lot of ways yeah now now I [TS]

00:20:43   still believe everything that I said [TS]

00:20:45   last time about the Apple strategy tax [TS]

00:20:46   this this these all these assumptions [TS]

00:20:48   are in my mind when I was writing it I [TS]

00:20:49   just should've expressed them better [TS]

00:20:50   because a lot of people would give [TS]

00:20:52   feedback and say this is why this is why [TS]

00:20:57   you're wrong Apple is doing all this [TS]

00:20:59   stuff it's not painting itself into a [TS]

00:21:01   corner it has to do this because look [TS]

00:21:02   what happened last time and I would say [TS]

00:21:06   that there has to be a limit like you [TS]

00:21:09   have to know you the situation they're [TS]

00:21:11   in now is not the situation they were in [TS]

00:21:12   before and you can't you can't do [TS]

00:21:14   everything yourself [TS]

00:21:15   you can't think that everyone is always [TS]

00:21:17   going to let you down the nature of a [TS]

00:21:18   platform is that you're building [TS]

00:21:19   something that other people can build on [TS]

00:21:21   top of you know everybody needs [TS]

00:21:24   third-party developers and you can't [TS]

00:21:26   just say well no one else can do with [TS]

00:21:28   this as well as we can so if there's any [TS]

00:21:30   remotely significant business we're [TS]

00:21:31   going to do it all ourselves and I think [TS]

00:21:35   that that's why the strategy tax stuff [TS]

00:21:38   is still valid that they're overstepping [TS]

00:21:40   that their neuroses about being let down [TS]

00:21:42   by other partners is causing them to [TS]

00:21:46   overreach and to just go a step too far [TS]

00:21:48   on the strategy tax stuff and [TS]

00:21:54   you feel better yeah I think so I think [TS]

00:21:57   I actually have some more on this really [TS]

00:21:59   but full before you do we'd like to [TS]

00:22:00   thank FreshBooks comm for sponsoring [TS]

00:22:02   today's episode you know I started 5x5 [TS]

00:22:05   and and I was thrilled to do that but [TS]

00:22:07   the part of it and this is that I do not [TS]

00:22:10   enjoy spending time on the [TS]

00:22:11   administrative stuff this is just I [TS]

00:22:13   don't especially things like invoicing [TS]

00:22:15   so this is where fresh books comes in [TS]

00:22:17   this is an easy-to-use online invoicing [TS]

00:22:18   service it will save you a lot of time [TS]

00:22:20   it will get you paid faster and it will [TS]

00:22:22   make you look professional because it [TS]

00:22:24   really looks great it's much better than [TS]

00:22:25   you know coming up with your own thing [TS]

00:22:27   in you know pages or word or whatever [TS]

00:22:29   and like you know sending that that [TS]

00:22:31   looks like garbage this is the real deal [TS]

00:22:33   and getting started is completely free [TS]

00:22:35   go to fresh books calm and you sign up [TS]

00:22:37   for the free account and here's [TS]

00:22:39   something very cool they're doing just [TS]

00:22:40   for hypercritical [TS]

00:22:41   listeners they're going to give away a [TS]

00:22:43   birthday cake every day to somebody who [TS]

00:22:45   signs up from the show so all you need [TS]

00:22:48   to do for chance to win the birthday [TS]

00:22:49   cake it does not need to be your [TS]

00:22:50   birthday I've cleared this with them you [TS]

00:22:53   just show up and now you enter in [TS]

00:22:55   hypercritical when they ask the question [TS]

00:22:57   of how you heard about us and and you [TS]

00:22:59   could win one so do that at fresh books [TS]

00:23:01   calm when you sign up that's it you need [TS]

00:23:05   to invoice anybody though jaunty I do [TS]

00:23:07   need to you know what I use for [TS]

00:23:08   invoicing people I should use an actual [TS]

00:23:11   professional service where I actually [TS]

00:23:12   use is the invoice template in pages [TS]

00:23:15   yeah that's what I'm saying that that's [TS]

00:23:17   in there but how do you keep track of [TS]

00:23:19   that how do you know if they on how do [TS]

00:23:20   you the official follow through it's a [TS]

00:23:22   big man I mean obviously it's not as a [TS]

00:23:24   big problem for me because this is not [TS]

00:23:25   like you know what there's not my [TS]

00:23:27   regular gig and I do so few invoices a [TS]

00:23:29   year but if I had to do more than one or [TS]

00:23:31   two of these a month I would shoot [TS]

00:23:32   myself do it that way it's no good [TS]

00:23:34   well now you can you like birthday cake [TS]

00:23:36   you here's what you do you go sign up [TS]

00:23:38   and then you you bring home a cake you [TS]

00:23:40   tell your kids it's their birthday and [TS]

00:23:41   they're like that it's not my birthday [TS]

00:23:43   like it's your birthday when I say it's [TS]

00:23:45   your birthday eat some cake some one of [TS]

00:23:47   those things where you can't win if [TS]

00:23:48   you're an employee of the now you can [TS]

00:23:51   own this just sign up yeah yeah I feel [TS]

00:23:54   like that's kind of gauche that's why do [TS]

00:23:55   I enter in any Ars Technica contest the [TS]

00:23:57   cake is a lie anyway [TS]

00:23:58   exactly all right a little portal joke [TS]

00:24:02   there Apple strategy texts oh god I have [TS]

00:24:06   somebody still have more on this [TS]

00:24:08   yeah I do I try I try to get through [TS]

00:24:10   quickly um so one of the other things [TS]

00:24:13   that people brought up which I hadn't [TS]

00:24:15   thought up which is a very good point as [TS]

00:24:17   to what's the particular motivation in [TS]

00:24:20   the case of the iBookstore which which i [TS]

00:24:22   think is an overreach what would make it [TS]

00:24:24   Apple overreach that way besides the [TS]

00:24:26   whole we have to do it ourselves because [TS]

00:24:27   what if Amazon never forsakes us and [TS]

00:24:30   that's the whole I into a quick sidebar [TS]

00:24:35   so people love to personify Apple in the [TS]

00:24:38   form of Steve Jobs as in life as in like [TS]

00:24:40   you know the corporate person is this [TS]

00:24:41   actual physical person and they're the [TS]

00:24:43   one in the same and whatever whim he has [TS]

00:24:45   if he likes the color blue Apple will [TS]

00:24:47   change all the buildings to blue because [TS]

00:24:48   he is Apple and Apple is him and we know [TS]

00:24:51   where that comes from the some truth to [TS]

00:24:53   it but it's also kind of ridiculous at a [TS]

00:24:54   certain point but that's how people [TS]

00:24:55   think about it I think it's a bad move [TS]

00:24:57   to think about it like that but it's [TS]

00:25:00   shorthand for a lot of people and so the [TS]

00:25:01   shorthand one person gave me your [TS]

00:25:03   feedback is that Steve Jobs just had to [TS]

00:25:06   be pissed about the Amazon mp3 store [TS]

00:25:09   mostly because the record labels used [TS]

00:25:13   the existence of Amazon as a viable [TS]

00:25:15   music competitor to gain leverage over [TS]

00:25:17   Apple because they were afraid that [TS]

00:25:19   they'd given Apple too much power as the [TS]

00:25:20   distributor of digital music having [TS]

00:25:22   whatever was 70% of the digital music [TS]

00:25:24   distribution market share and they may [TS]

00:25:26   sell amazon amaz that's a big company [TS]

00:25:28   they sell lots of stuff they're great at [TS]

00:25:30   selling things they're a big name and [TS]

00:25:31   they want to do a music store we need to [TS]

00:25:33   go and talk to them because we need some [TS]

00:25:35   sort of leverage against Apple and for a [TS]

00:25:37   while I remember the ammos mp3 store had [TS]

00:25:39   better prices then than the Apple store [TS]

00:25:42   do you remember that yeah and that was [TS]

00:25:44   basically the music store is giving [TS]

00:25:46   Apple in the personified form of Steve [TS]

00:25:49   Jobs two fingers yeah yeah you thought [TS]

00:25:51   you had the power well we're gonna you [TS]

00:25:52   know we're gonna take it back or we're [TS]

00:25:54   gonna have a competitor better deal [TS]

00:25:55   because we like to play you two off of [TS]

00:25:56   each other so it's a good business move [TS]

00:25:58   from the record labels point of view but [TS]

00:26:00   Jobs had to be pissed man [TS]

00:26:01   that I bet Amazon was you know I don't [TS]

00:26:05   know like it's silly to be angry about [TS]

00:26:08   this because it's just business and how [TS]

00:26:10   could he be how could you be you know [TS]

00:26:12   he's an adult he's a business man how [TS]

00:26:14   could he be really be angry but every [TS]

00:26:15   cartoonish caricature of Steve Jobs that [TS]

00:26:18   you see on television or in people [TS]

00:26:19   telling stories makes you think that [TS]

00:26:21   he's the type of person [TS]

00:26:21   that would be all pissy about this well [TS]

00:26:23   how dare they start a music store don't [TS]

00:26:25   they know that we you know our music [TS]

00:26:26   store is better boy I hate them no I [TS]

00:26:28   don't think he's really like that but [TS]

00:26:30   this this is the impression that I get [TS]

00:26:33   from a lot of people who tell me about [TS]

00:26:35   this boy boy jobs and now I hold as a [TS]

00:26:38   group that he holds a grudge now Jobs is [TS]

00:26:39   pissed in Amazon so not only did would [TS]

00:26:42   Apple not want to rely on Amazon but you [TS]

00:26:46   know what F Amazon they they took they [TS]

00:26:50   hurt us in the music negotiations by [TS]

00:26:52   daring to have a music store so we're [TS]

00:26:54   gonna do mean things to them men at [TS]

00:26:56   pupal I don't buy this theory because I [TS]

00:26:59   think it's silly and childish and silly [TS]

00:27:01   and childishness jobs may have been in [TS]

00:27:02   his youth that I feel like he has moved [TS]

00:27:05   way past that by now but behind all that [TS]

00:27:09   is the kernel of truth that business [TS]

00:27:11   relationship wise Amazon finds itself at [TS]

00:27:13   odds with Apple in at least this one [TS]

00:27:15   very recent area and it could have moat [TS]

00:27:18   added to the motivation of saying why [TS]

00:27:20   should we have a book store when Amazon [TS]

00:27:22   is so greater and these other things are [TS]

00:27:23   so great why should we enter that arena [TS]

00:27:24   there's a little tiny prick you know in [TS]

00:27:27   the back of your head even though it's [TS]

00:27:28   not boys to say well they did kind of [TS]

00:27:30   enter our business when they did that [TS]

00:27:32   music store thing so I don't feel so bad [TS]

00:27:33   or it's kind of like this straw maybe [TS]

00:27:35   that broke the camel's back there it [TS]

00:27:37   could just even be subconscious could be [TS]

00:27:39   something they just never even bring up [TS]

00:27:40   or someone brings up at the end of the [TS]

00:27:41   meeting and they all laugh about but [TS]

00:27:42   because like it's not of course that's [TS]

00:27:44   not the real reason we're doing it you [TS]

00:27:45   know we had the real meeting about the [TS]

00:27:47   reasons we're going to do it but you [TS]

00:27:48   know I thought it was a good point Aaron [TS]

00:27:50   Pressman brought that up to me another [TS]

00:27:53   point this is a Rory Berger synthesis [TS]

00:27:56   was the whole premise that winning is [TS]

00:28:01   only defined by maximum market share and [TS]

00:28:04   that was that was definitely a premise [TS]

00:28:05   of what I was talking about the strategy [TS]

00:28:08   tacks in that well how can the the [TS]

00:28:10   iBookstore guy do his job because isn't [TS]

00:28:11   his job to be the most successful store [TS]

00:28:14   and success is to find as having the [TS]

00:28:15   biggest market share hmm [TS]

00:28:16   and he said well you know Apple Apple [TS]

00:28:19   has low market share and lots of stuff [TS]

00:28:20   they just want to have the most profit I [TS]

00:28:22   I'm not a fan of this theory I think [TS]

00:28:25   that market share isn't everything and [TS]

00:28:27   then you can't you know you can't buy a [TS]

00:28:28   house with market share you want profit [TS]

00:28:30   you want money but I think Apple wants [TS]

00:28:31   both I think they want the big fat [TS]

00:28:33   margins they want the most profit and [TS]

00:28:35   they all [TS]

00:28:35   I want to have the most market share [TS]

00:28:37   because if you don't have those volumes [TS]

00:28:38   no matter how much profit you're making [TS]

00:28:41   although you know that the little corner [TS]

00:28:43   of the market you have without the [TS]

00:28:45   volumes you lose lots of things you got [TS]

00:28:46   to have the volume to get to get the [TS]

00:28:48   good deals to have the power negotiation [TS]

00:28:50   is to get the good parts prices is on [TS]

00:28:52   hardware and stuff but even on software [TS]

00:28:54   on stores to have the leverage against [TS]

00:28:56   the the publishers you need to have the [TS]

00:28:58   volume so I can't imagine a scenario in [TS]

00:29:01   which a big part of that I bookstore [TS]

00:29:05   guys job is to just to get market share [TS]

00:29:07   because you just need to have volume you [TS]

00:29:09   doesn't mean you need to have ninety [TS]

00:29:10   percent and just like crush everybody [TS]

00:29:12   else or a hundred percent but if that [TS]

00:29:14   guy said well we're making tons of [TS]

00:29:16   profit you know but we only have ten [TS]

00:29:18   percent market share but the boy we have [TS]

00:29:19   the most lucrative ten percent I think [TS]

00:29:21   his bosses would say that's good and all [TS]

00:29:23   but we really have no negotiating power [TS]

00:29:26   against the the publishers if we're only [TS]

00:29:28   ten percent of the market so you need to [TS]

00:29:29   like step up your game so that's my take [TS]

00:29:32   on that one more someone brought up yeah [TS]

00:29:36   this is the last one I think I'll skip [TS]

00:29:38   over what we have for the rest of the [TS]

00:29:39   follow up because I have other follow-up [TS]

00:29:40   we can do it too one more Alex Kay [TS]

00:29:44   brought this up a past example of a [TS]

00:29:47   possible strategy tax conflict of [TS]

00:29:49   interest that that hurt consumers and [TS]

00:29:51   that would be the lack of blu-ray [TS]

00:29:53   support on Macs [TS]

00:29:55   basically saying that the theory there [TS]

00:29:57   is that Apple didn't want to put blu-ray [TS]

00:29:58   drives in its max because it didn't want [TS]

00:30:00   to hurt its digital you know [TS]

00:30:02   distribution of movies and stuff yeah [TS]

00:30:06   what do you think about that I don't [TS]

00:30:08   know if I buy it entirely because it [TS]

00:30:10   it's a little bit mixing two things [TS]

00:30:12   there because you could say well they [TS]

00:30:13   did that big zit in one they wanted [TS]

00:30:15   people to buy stuff from the iTunes [TS]

00:30:16   store buy your video from us don't buy [TS]

00:30:18   blu-ray discs because we don't sell [TS]

00:30:20   blu-ray discs but on the other hand it's [TS]

00:30:22   also kind of part of just apples vision [TS]

00:30:24   of the future the reason we all like [TS]

00:30:25   apples that they look ahead and see how [TS]

00:30:27   things should be in the future and they [TS]

00:30:29   just make that happen as soon you know [TS]

00:30:31   sooner rather than later [TS]

00:30:32   and by not putting blu-ray in there they [TS]

00:30:33   were signaling the digital distribution [TS]

00:30:35   is the future and whether you buy from [TS]

00:30:36   us or not we're not doing this out of [TS]

00:30:38   selfish you know reasons it's mostly [TS]

00:30:40   just because we think in the future disk [TS]

00:30:42   putting bits on discs is silly and dumb [TS]

00:30:44   and it we should make we should hasten [TS]

00:30:47   its demise as much as possible and I'm [TS]

00:30:49   fine to say that I don't think first of [TS]

00:30:51   all I don't think this move actually [TS]

00:30:52   helped Apple sell more videos on the [TS]

00:30:55   iTunes Store because if people wanted [TS]

00:30:56   discs they were going to get discs even [TS]

00:30:58   if their max wouldn't play them I think [TS]

00:30:59   that's such a small market of people [TS]

00:31:00   playing movies on their on their max it [TS]

00:31:03   hurt apple a little bit in the [TS]

00:31:04   professional media production market [TS]

00:31:06   where they wanted blu-ray because they'd [TS]

00:31:07   have to produce them as part of their [TS]

00:31:09   work and that max couldn't understand [TS]

00:31:10   them so they had to buy external drives [TS]

00:31:12   and stuff but I'm inclined to say that [TS]

00:31:15   it is not an example of strategy shacks [TS]

00:31:17   and is more of an example of like Apple [TS]

00:31:19   ditching the USB ports hmm it's pretty [TS]

00:31:22   much like that where they said look the [TS]

00:31:23   future is going to be USB let's forget [TS]

00:31:25   about all these other interfaces let's [TS]

00:31:26   drop them from machine to force everyone [TS]

00:31:28   to move along and that's what they were [TS]

00:31:29   doing with the lack of blu-ray pay no [TS]

00:31:31   attention to the blu-ray yeah and also [TS]

00:31:34   on our already to the next step [TS]

00:31:36   just ignore we want to want to move the [TS]

00:31:37   ball down the field there's this I'll go [TS]

00:31:39   along with that yeah ah that's the best [TS]

00:31:43   reason I've heard so far we have three [TS]

00:31:46   more items to follow up and I'll just [TS]

00:31:47   tell you that the names then we'll skip [TS]

00:31:48   them okay hey you love the teases the [TS]

00:31:51   iPhone 5 and antenna design will say [TS]

00:31:54   that for next week oh that's a good one [TS]

00:31:56   the MacBook Pro which I'll just do is [TS]

00:31:59   when I was takes two seconds and I quote [TS]

00:32:00   pros apparently can be can have 16 [TS]

00:32:03   gigabytes of RAM in there if you put in [TS]

00:32:05   SuperDuper expensive 8 gigabyte DIMMs [TS]

00:32:07   right and what will - a gigabyte DIMMs [TS]

00:32:10   run you apparently about 1600 bucks so [TS]

00:32:13   the limitation on new sell CPU is [TS]

00:32:15   apparently that just has two memory [TS]

00:32:16   channels rings Apple could not add more [TS]

00:32:18   DIMM slots even if there was room this [TS]

00:32:20   is my understanding but and you can get [TS]

00:32:23   16 gigs but you pay through the nose for [TS]

00:32:24   it so I'm sure someone that's out there [TS]

00:32:26   needs those 16 gigs and it's good to [TS]

00:32:28   know that it's possible if you're [TS]

00:32:29   willing to pay through the nose ah and I [TS]

00:32:32   got one more but it's too minor so we'll [TS]

00:32:33   skip it entirely [TS]

00:32:34   good good riddance today I say do we [TS]

00:32:38   have any time for the actual show today [TS]

00:32:40   I think we do why I only got less than [TS]

00:32:42   30 minutes on this tonight yeah 35 yeah [TS]

00:32:45   all right [TS]

00:32:47   no I life is an island and the subtitle [TS]

00:32:51   what was the subtype I lost the subtitle [TS]

00:32:53   I'll find it in a second you can edit [TS]

00:32:57   out this pause no I like it it's very [TS]

00:32:59   you know it's real shows [TS]

00:33:02   shows that you're not the you know and [TS]

00:33:05   all my people think you are I had all my [TS]

00:33:07   webpages up but then I closed them and [TS]

00:33:08   discussed when you relate I can reopen [TS]

00:33:11   your ID all right [TS]

00:33:12   no I life is an island apples ongoing [TS]

00:33:15   failure to recognize how its best [TS]

00:33:17   customers actually use its products [TS]

00:33:18   mm-hmm just reading that if you were one [TS]

00:33:22   of the people who shares my complaints [TS]

00:33:25   you may already know like everything [TS]

00:33:26   that I'm about to say but if you don't [TS]

00:33:28   share my complaints that sounds you [TS]

00:33:30   don't know what I'm going to talk about [TS]

00:33:30   this doesn't sound like it makes sense [TS]

00:33:35   so I think this is the way into this [TS]

00:33:37   topic the way in is to think about how [TS]

00:33:40   Apple Pictures people using its products [TS]

00:33:42   and you can go pick any error in Apple's [TS]

00:33:45   history after Jobs is returned to say [TS]

00:33:46   like what what do they expect people to [TS]

00:33:48   do so sort of at the dawning of the new [TS]

00:33:52   fancier Mac's or the IMAX and basically [TS]

00:33:54   and the iLife suite in particular is [TS]

00:33:56   this my impression of how they pictured [TS]

00:33:58   it and how they would show it in the ads [TS]

00:33:59   is you your family or whoever go into an [TS]

00:34:02   Apple store you buy a Mac you get the [TS]

00:34:04   iLife suite bring it home and you take [TS]

00:34:06   pictures of your kids you take movies [TS]

00:34:08   your kids you make music whatever every [TS]

00:34:12   time you use some device your iPod or [TS]

00:34:14   your iPhone or your digital camera or [TS]

00:34:17   your camcorder wherever you hook it up [TS]

00:34:18   to your Mac it imports the stuff into [TS]

00:34:20   their great applications it organizes [TS]

00:34:22   your stuff lets you share them with [TS]

00:34:23   Grandma lets you video chat with people [TS]

00:34:25   you know you bring all your stuff [TS]

00:34:27   together and that's how you integrate [TS]

00:34:29   Apple's products into your life and they [TS]

00:34:31   make your life better because now you've [TS]

00:34:32   got this great place to manage all your [TS]

00:34:34   memories and all your media and to [TS]

00:34:36   create things and to do interesting [TS]

00:34:37   things with iMovie and to share it with [TS]

00:34:39   everybody over the internet using all [TS]

00:34:41   Apple software all Apple hardware that [TS]

00:34:44   seems to be what they want and expect to [TS]

00:34:47   happen and way back when that was that [TS]

00:34:49   seem valid especially like in like [TS]

00:34:51   1998-99 when the iMac first came out [TS]

00:34:53   it's like yeah I'm going to buy this [TS]

00:34:54   computer it'll be a family computer this [TS]

00:34:55   is what we'll do with it but what [TS]

00:34:57   actually happens and especially among [TS]

00:34:59   the crazy Apple nerds is that they [TS]

00:35:01   brought home that Mac even if they [TS]

00:35:03   weren't crazy Apple learns they become [TS]

00:35:04   crazy app learns they bring home the Mac [TS]

00:35:06   like oh this is great you know I'm doing [TS]

00:35:07   things I've never done before making [TS]

00:35:08   movies I'm cutting things together and [TS]

00:35:10   use digital media this is on master of [TS]

00:35:12   the universe I love computers and what [TS]

00:35:15   is that you know then the mom wants a [TS]

00:35:17   Mac or then the dad wants one or then [TS]

00:35:18   the kid wants one or something I said [TS]

00:35:20   alright well yeah but I love next I have [TS]

00:35:22   these laptops let's get one of those [TS]

00:35:23   looks kind of like a toilet seat but [TS]

00:35:24   whatever we'll get it for you you know [TS]

00:35:25   and then you can have this in your room [TS]

00:35:27   and I can have that there and then you [TS]

00:35:29   know I want to use a separate computer [TS]

00:35:30   for Bill ping so you know so these these [TS]

00:35:32   are apples best customers [TS]

00:35:33   people who just love the products and [TS]

00:35:35   they get one and they realize how [TS]

00:35:37   wonderful it is and they want more and [TS]

00:35:38   so you know every member of the family [TS]

00:35:40   has one now that may sound crazy even [TS]

00:35:42   you know in the late 90s or certainly in [TS]

00:35:45   the 80s that that every member of your [TS]

00:35:46   family would have a computer that [TS]

00:35:47   there'd be a husband computer wife [TS]

00:35:49   computer each kid has a computer that's [TS]

00:35:51   just Fantasyland you know when we were [TS]

00:35:53   but and a little bit of apples mindset [TS]

00:35:56   you know in all their ads was like no [TS]

00:35:58   there'll be one computer in your house [TS]

00:35:59   and all gather round and we'll do stuff [TS]

00:36:00   on and you'll take turns and stuff once [TS]

00:36:02   everybody has a computer though apples [TS]

00:36:05   model starts to break down really badly [TS]

00:36:07   and the best example I think the most [TS]

00:36:09   common one is that if you're a family [TS]

00:36:11   and you have to max maybe you just [TS]

00:36:14   bought a new one and there's like the [TS]

00:36:15   old one is still floating around but you [TS]

00:36:16   will eventually end up with two backs [TS]

00:36:18   you don't even have to be Apple's best [TS]

00:36:19   customer you just you're just an apple [TS]

00:36:20   customer eventually you will have to max [TS]

00:36:23   but you still just have one family and [TS]

00:36:26   when you go and take pictures on [TS]

00:36:27   vacation or something you have to [TS]

00:36:29   connect your camera back to a computer [TS]

00:36:31   to put those pictures on and you're not [TS]

00:36:33   going to connect this to computers and [TS]

00:36:34   put the pictures in both places you just [TS]

00:36:37   want to do it once but then then you've [TS]

00:36:39   got what you basically done is [TS]

00:36:40   designated one computer in your house as [TS]

00:36:41   the iPhoto computer or the aperture [TS]

00:36:44   computer or whatever you know you're [TS]

00:36:45   probably not using aperture but that's [TS]

00:36:47   the picture computer so what happens [TS]

00:36:49   when you when someone comes home from [TS]

00:36:51   taking the kids out on a trip and you [TS]

00:36:52   want to take the pictures off the camera [TS]

00:36:54   and organize them but someone else is [TS]

00:36:55   using the quote-unquote picture computer [TS]

00:36:57   you can't use I'm doing something on [TS]

00:37:00   paying bills or I'm writing a paper or [TS]

00:37:02   whatever you'll just have to wait it's [TS]

00:37:04   like well you've got to max there but [TS]

00:37:07   someone is hogging the iPhoto computer [TS]

00:37:08   and and ditto for every other thing I'm [TS]

00:37:10   syncing iPods is another example you [TS]

00:37:13   know you can only this was from way way [TS]

00:37:14   back you know they said well to combat [TS]

00:37:16   piracy you can only connect your iPod to [TS]

00:37:19   one computer and that's like it's [TS]

00:37:20   computer I'm we did that so that you [TS]

00:37:22   won't go over your friends house with [TS]

00:37:23   your five monstrous five gig iPod I'll [TS]

00:37:26   get into there too right [TS]

00:37:28   and give them all your music illegally [TS]

00:37:29   yeah you don't want to that don't steal [TS]

00:37:31   music guys so they said that what we're [TS]

00:37:33   going to do your iPod is home up to one [TS]

00:37:34   computer and what that means basically [TS]

00:37:37   is that if there's some new song it [TS]

00:37:38   comes out you want to quickly go onto [TS]

00:37:40   iTunes and buy it because you're a great [TS]

00:37:41   Apple customer and you're just the [TS]

00:37:42   single comes out you want to buy it for [TS]

00:37:43   $0.99 and someone is using the computer [TS]

00:37:46   the iTunes computer the computer that [TS]

00:37:48   your iPod is synced with you have to [TS]

00:37:49   wait doesn't matter that you have four [TS]

00:37:51   Macs in your house it you've now tied [TS]

00:37:54   specific functions to specific Macs and [TS]

00:37:56   this is what I mean by no iLife is an [TS]

00:37:58   island realistically families exist and [TS]

00:38:01   families have many pretty people who [TS]

00:38:03   produce content and many people who want [TS]

00:38:05   to manage it even if it's just husband [TS]

00:38:06   and wife and they wanted you know one [TS]

00:38:08   the husband wants to organize vacation [TS]

00:38:10   photos but the wife wants to you know [TS]

00:38:11   browse the web or do something else you [TS]

00:38:13   have the shuffle machine so that okay [TS]

00:38:15   well if you want to do photo [TS]

00:38:16   organization you have to do it over here [TS]

00:38:17   right and when when this happened I'm [TS]

00:38:20   like okay well it's 1998 it's 2000 2001 [TS]

00:38:23   Apple you know still getting used to the [TS]

00:38:25   idea that they're going to be selling [TS]

00:38:26   lots of Macs into homes or that this [TS]

00:38:28   this phenomenon is gonna happen but [TS]

00:38:29   surely they'll eventually realize how [TS]

00:38:31   real people use their products surely [TS]

00:38:33   they'll eventually have some sort of [TS]

00:38:34   solution for dealing with this and the [TS]

00:38:37   best they came up with and how many [TS]

00:38:38   years it's been almost 10 years it has [TS]

00:38:40   been to make content viewable from other [TS]

00:38:43   Mac so you know my wife can see the [TS]

00:38:46   pictures from the iPhoto computer on her [TS]

00:38:48   Mac but she can't edit them she can't [TS]

00:38:50   organize them and yeah she can drag them [TS]

00:38:52   over to copy them but that takes forever [TS]

00:38:54   and now you got your pictures in two [TS]

00:38:56   places and you're trying to you know [TS]

00:38:57   there's no good family-friendly solution [TS]

00:39:00   to doing this and it's one of those [TS]

00:39:03   ridiculous issues where Apple is not [TS]

00:39:07   serving the customers that just want to [TS]

00:39:09   give it money hand or if it's like we [TS]

00:39:10   want to buy Macs we want to buy I pause [TS]

00:39:12   we want to buy everything we want to we [TS]

00:39:13   want to have a whole house full of your [TS]

00:39:15   stuff we just want it to work together [TS]

00:39:17   and you know it still hasn't come and I [TS]

00:39:20   don't see it anywhere on horizon but [TS]

00:39:22   every time I do anything with iLife or [TS]

00:39:24   anything having to do with media my [TS]

00:39:25   computer it burns me that this mindset [TS]

00:39:27   of one computer one device still [TS]

00:39:29   permeates their entire product line the [TS]

00:39:32   iPods in particular burn because it's [TS]

00:39:33   not even DRM on the music anymore and [TS]

00:39:35   yet if you plug your iPod into another [TS]

00:39:36   computer you can't buy something in that [TS]

00:39:38   computer and stick it on your iPod [TS]

00:39:39   because that would be crazy [TS]

00:39:41   yeah it really it I would much rather [TS]

00:39:44   have it be an account level thing for [TS]

00:39:48   the sinking when it comes to the sinking [TS]

00:39:51   anywhere une Mac you can go on when you [TS]

00:39:53   sign into your account at a little work [TS]

00:39:55   with that because right now it's like [TS]

00:39:57   it's it's like this like we've got you [TS]

00:39:59   know I've talked about and we have an [TS]

00:40:01   iPad that's sort of like the family iPad [TS]

00:40:03   that my wife my little kid will use and [TS]

00:40:05   really I'm the one that gets all the [TS]

00:40:07   apps and sets everything up [TS]

00:40:09   so my wife or my little boy they'll have [TS]

00:40:12   to Excel well we want this app you know [TS]

00:40:14   can you get this one and she even though [TS]

00:40:16   she is you know a college graduate she [TS]

00:40:19   can not buy an app because it sucked up [TS]

00:40:21   to my machine you know what I'm saying [TS]

00:40:22   it it's it's me I'm sorry [TS]

00:40:24   step up still the apps are at least a [TS]

00:40:26   step up because at least if you buy an [TS]

00:40:27   app once now makes you resign yourself [TS]

00:40:30   to the ridiculous thing of using a [TS]

00:40:31   single Apple ID for all your devices [TS]

00:40:32   used ads Apple ID in every single [TS]

00:40:34   because my Apple ID is the one we use on [TS]

00:40:36   all our devices then at least when I buy [TS]

00:40:38   an app [TS]

00:40:38   my wife put it on her iPod and it is [TS]

00:40:41   kind of perverse that her iPod is logged [TS]

00:40:42   into my Apple ID right that's a leap but [TS]

00:40:45   that's that's still better than at least [TS]

00:40:47   they're letting it be shared around but [TS]

00:40:49   what would be the equivalent of the [TS]

00:40:50   iLife Island scenario would be is that [TS]

00:40:52   if I bought the app and that she'd have [TS]

00:40:54   to buy it again a different account to [TS]

00:40:55   get it on her iPod and she could never [TS]

00:40:56   you know but what's annoying though is [TS]

00:40:58   that is that most families this is this [TS]

00:41:01   is such a common problem this is this is [TS]

00:41:03   the frustrating way that it is for [TS]

00:41:05   everybody this isn't this isn't an edge [TS]

00:41:07   case usually you describe edge cases [TS]

00:41:09   usually you know it started out as an [TS]

00:41:11   edge case because who had all these [TS]

00:41:12   Mac's but like neva tably if you aren't [TS]

00:41:14   an apple customer vanished any stripe [TS]

00:41:16   you will buy a new Mac and your old one [TS]

00:41:18   you probably won't throw in the garbage [TS]

00:41:19   it'll probably still be in the house in [TS]

00:41:21   I like the fact they had the migration [TS]

00:41:24   assistant that was a big problem area [TS]

00:41:26   that they did address and I what I felt [TS]

00:41:27   like was a reasonably timely manner in [TS]

00:41:28   the migration system just keeps getting [TS]

00:41:30   better and better to the point where I [TS]

00:41:31   actually started using it which is was a [TS]

00:41:33   big step for me because I was always a [TS]

00:41:35   manually bring over your stuff I would [TS]

00:41:37   like may and we put the prep files in [TS]

00:41:39   place many wait I would tweak thing at [TS]

00:41:41   individual file levels I knew where [TS]

00:41:42   everything went and I finally decided to [TS]

00:41:45   give the the migration assistant a try I [TS]

00:41:48   think it was Snow Leopard was the first [TS]

00:41:49   time I did or maybe was leopard and damn [TS]

00:41:52   that thing doesn't just work right so [TS]

00:41:54   that doesn't recognize [TS]

00:41:55   scenario that your customers have they [TS]

00:41:56   buy new Mac they don't they don't have [TS]

00:41:59   the knowledge to to do what I used to do [TS]

00:42:01   with manually drag files over you know I [TS]

00:42:03   remember doing that back from the system [TS]

00:42:04   six days just manually putting files [TS]

00:42:05   over to create my new hard drive [TS]

00:42:08   nobody does that you know regular people [TS]

00:42:10   won't do that so they made this [TS]

00:42:11   migration assistant they made it really [TS]

00:42:12   easy use and it works so they recognized [TS]

00:42:15   that need but well they didn't recognize [TS]

00:42:16   is that you can't just you know tying [TS]

00:42:19   iPhoto to a single computer is a [TS]

00:42:21   non-starter even if you bring the whole [TS]

00:42:23   library over and hey I got this new Mac [TS]

00:42:24   and look there's my old photos that's [TS]

00:42:25   great but now all your old photos was [TS]

00:42:27   still on your old Mac and I got the [TS]

00:42:28   photos in two places and I you've got [TS]

00:42:29   the split-brain scenario where humans [TS]

00:42:32   aren't good at keeping track of all that [TS]

00:42:34   vacations in this computer that's what [TS]

00:42:35   happens to people they end up with stuff [TS]

00:42:37   on both computers so that's all here but [TS]

00:42:38   that's over there but when I come home [TS]

00:42:40   for the park I put the pictures of [TS]

00:42:41   little Joey on this computer but you can [TS]

00:42:44   copy them over the air then you lose my [TS]

00:42:45   ratings but I cropped & rotated them [TS]

00:42:47   over here too so make sure you get the [TS]

00:42:48   copies but oh just a gigantic mess and [TS]

00:42:51   syncing is really hard and Apple sucks [TS]

00:42:54   at it that's all the show but I don't [TS]

00:42:56   even think they have to sync I think [TS]

00:42:57   they just need to I would be happy as a [TS]

00:42:59   first step to just instead of making one [TS]

00:43:01   computer the iLife computer or the [TS]

00:43:03   iPhoto computer make it the iLife server [TS]

00:43:06   and then at least you know have [TS]

00:43:08   everything just on the one computer in [TS]

00:43:09   the requirements now all that computers [TS]

00:43:10   needs to be on someone else can be [TS]

00:43:12   logged into it doing something else on [TS]

00:43:13   it but just that computer needs to be on [TS]

00:43:14   and then the other the other computers [TS]

00:43:16   can can possibly painfully over the [TS]

00:43:19   network at least be able to slowly [TS]

00:43:22   manipulate things organize photos add [TS]

00:43:24   ratings put keywords in you know [TS]

00:43:26   whatever you're going to do do two [TS]

00:43:28   places in our or the faces thing or what [TS]

00:43:31   you know there's so much you can do so [TS]

00:43:32   much metadata that you can provide that [TS]

00:43:35   you want to be able to write when you're [TS]

00:43:36   in that sort of I'm organizing my photos [TS]

00:43:38   make a little album of it you know push [TS]

00:43:39   the album up to the web I web is the [TS]

00:43:41   same way iWeb is kind of a train wreck [TS]

00:43:43   but it's the same type of deal we use [TS]

00:43:45   iWeb for our family website just because [TS]

00:43:47   we pay for dot Mac and we want something [TS]

00:43:48   that's password protected for privacy [TS]

00:43:50   and Iowa fits the bill but horrible [TS]

00:43:53   horrible program but we have one [TS]

00:43:54   computer that you can do iWeb from [TS]

00:43:56   that's the iWeb computer and if you just [TS]

00:43:57   want to put in a new little blog post [TS]

00:43:59   you can't do it from any computer except [TS]

00:44:01   for that computer and that particular [TS]

00:44:02   count on that particular computer so [TS]

00:44:04   it's a double whammy [TS]

00:44:05   all these island type things are places [TS]

00:44:08   where apple just doesn't get something [TS]

00:44:13   that seems to be in Google's DNA the [TS]

00:44:14   whole you know network computer sinking [TS]

00:44:17   damn arid I'm that's also another show [TS]

00:44:20   topic but this this is a minor [TS]

00:44:22   manifestation of them not getting that [TS]

00:44:24   and you know I didn't complain about it [TS]

00:44:27   for years because I figured first the [TS]

00:44:29   first thing you have to do is make good [TS]

00:44:30   app that people want to use and then you [TS]

00:44:32   know refine it and you know go through [TS]

00:44:34   one two or three versions but I feel [TS]

00:44:35   like I will do that like they made the [TS]

00:44:37   iLife suite and they made it better and [TS]

00:44:38   now it's pretty darn polished at some [TS]

00:44:40   point you have to address this and I [TS]

00:44:41   gave them many years before you know I [TS]

00:44:43   cut them a lot of slack to say they've [TS]

00:44:45   got more important things to do this is [TS]

00:44:47   and you said this isn't an edge case but [TS]

00:44:49   I thought you know this is kind of an [TS]

00:44:50   edge case especially back in the [TS]

00:44:51   beginning that you can't you know the [TS]

00:44:54   Nerds can't go demanding their pet [TS]

00:44:56   obscure feature in version one or even [TS]

00:44:58   version 2 or version three but we're on [TS]

00:45:00   you know the fourth and fifth revisions [TS]

00:45:02   and some apps like iMovie have been [TS]

00:45:03   totally rewritten at least once already [TS]

00:45:05   it's time for them to do something about [TS]

00:45:07   this what was now suggestin well now we [TS]

00:45:10   can insert the usual fantasy scenario [TS]

00:45:12   where we take the North Carolina [TS]

00:45:14   datacenter once again we hook it up in [TS]

00:45:17   there and we say well the North Carolina [TS]

00:45:18   datacenter that will solve this problem [TS]

00:45:20   because surely Apple is using that to [TS]

00:45:22   insert whatever it is you want to Apple [TS]

00:45:23   to do so in this case I won't sir [TS]

00:45:25   well surely they're using that to make [TS]

00:45:26   some sort of server-side cloud based [TS]

00:45:29   synchronized iLife blob they're not [TS]

00:45:32   actually doing that I would think but [TS]

00:45:35   yeah they could do a server side [TS]

00:45:36   component but that's just not in their [TS]

00:45:38   DNA I think like I said I think a good [TS]

00:45:40   first step would be make make some sort [TS]

00:45:44   of iLife server type thing where it's [TS]

00:45:47   part of the iLife suite you designate [TS]

00:45:48   one computer is that you don't have to [TS]

00:45:50   designate as a servic service ounds [TS]

00:45:51   scary you can make it more like it's [TS]

00:45:53   like home sharing but it's readwrite you [TS]

00:45:54   know use some existing paradigm that [TS]

00:45:56   people are comfortable with in terms of [TS]

00:45:57   it just appears in your sidebar of your [TS]

00:45:59   application you can see these other [TS]

00:46:00   people's libraries or whatever the same [TS]

00:46:02   way it works now but it's got to be [TS]

00:46:04   faster because it's dog slow even over a [TS]

00:46:05   wired Gigabit Ethernet and you know it's [TS]

00:46:09   got to be it's got to be read/write so I [TS]

00:46:13   don't care how they mask it and how they [TS]

00:46:15   put it into the the application and [TS]

00:46:18   whether they call it a server what [TS]

00:46:19   they probably don't want to because it's [TS]

00:46:20   too intimidating whether they just call [TS]

00:46:21   it Home Sharing version to whatever they [TS]

00:46:23   want to do marketing wise but we just [TS]

00:46:26   need to get families out of this [TS]

00:46:28   struggle of having a bunch of different [TS]

00:46:30   islands in their house but bunch of [TS]

00:46:32   different media spread all over the [TS]

00:46:33   place and by the way while they're in [TS]

00:46:34   there stop the ridiculous thing where [TS]

00:46:36   you can only plug the iPod into one [TS]

00:46:37   computer that drives me nuts like I was [TS]

00:46:40   in the podcast on the way to and from [TS]

00:46:42   work and sometimes the podcast will come [TS]

00:46:43   out when I'm at work and I have my iPod [TS]

00:46:45   with me and I'm a little stupid USB [TS]

00:46:47   adapter because the shuffle doesn't have [TS]

00:46:48   one and I would love to download that [TS]

00:46:52   podcast on my work Mac plug in my Maya [TS]

00:46:56   you know a little iPod shuffle put the [TS]

00:46:58   podcast on it for the ride home but I [TS]

00:46:59   can't because if I plug my shuffle into [TS]

00:47:00   my computer at work my options are [TS]

00:47:02   erased the whole thing or just listen to [TS]

00:47:04   what's on and if you had an iPhone you'd [TS]

00:47:06   be able to do that yeah I'm just saying [TS]

00:47:10   like yeah the iPod what about an iPod [TS]

00:47:12   Touch on an iPod touch you can do that [TS]

00:47:14   too right you can download the podcast [TS]

00:47:16   on the on the iPod touch so yes I was I [TS]

00:47:19   use the shuffle for commuting just [TS]

00:47:20   because it's small and you know I don't [TS]

00:47:22   care if it gets dropped in the ground or [TS]

00:47:23   whatever [TS]

00:47:24   sure or Don but or more likely he get [TS]

00:47:26   mugged and get mugged in the commute but [TS]

00:47:29   but yeah that that burns me is that uh [TS]

00:47:33   you know I am the quote-unquote owner of [TS]

00:47:35   both computers I have the account it's [TS]

00:47:37   the same Apple ID logged into both ones [TS]

00:47:38   the music is not even a pay thing it's a [TS]

00:47:41   free podcast you know on the web and yet [TS]

00:47:43   I can't stick my ipod into this computer [TS]

00:47:45   and put a podcast on it and go home [TS]

00:47:48   without erasing the entire thing and [TS]

00:47:50   that's just that's like a ridiculous [TS]

00:47:51   legacy embarrass you think that'll [TS]

00:47:54   change ever I think the more likely [TS]

00:47:59   scenario is that the non-touch ipods [TS]

00:48:01   will just go away yeah and and then you [TS]

00:48:04   know a problem solve we don't have a [TS]

00:48:06   limitation anymore because within iOS [TS]

00:48:08   you could just download it right onto [TS]

00:48:09   your thing you don't have that problem [TS]

00:48:10   yeah that's depressing to me though this [TS]

00:48:12   is a limitation they just can't be [TS]

00:48:14   bothered to fix because that product [TS]

00:48:15   line is like well it does what it does [TS]

00:48:17   it's fading away let's concentrate on [TS]

00:48:19   iOS I'll be a while we'll have to wait a [TS]

00:48:21   while for that don't well speaking of [TS]

00:48:25   speaking of waiting actually that's a [TS]

00:48:26   good segue we'll do our second sponsor [TS]

00:48:29   waiting is for chumps can you agree on [TS]

00:48:33   that John [TS]

00:48:34   sure so why why wait on on your images [TS]

00:48:37   your videos JavaScript and CSS to [TS]

00:48:39   download from traditional origin [TS]

00:48:41   locations instead John you know you [TS]

00:48:42   should use a see the end that's right I [TS]

00:48:46   heard you say that Rackspace is [TS]

00:48:48   partnered I was taking a drink well I [TS]

00:48:50   heard I heard CDN like that CDN [TS]

00:48:54   Rackspace is partnered with Akamai on [TS]

00:48:56   their global CDN to make waiting forever [TS]

00:48:58   for file download sitting in the past so [TS]

00:49:00   if your web developer if you're a [TS]

00:49:01   designer if you're a programmer and [TS]

00:49:04   performance of your site actually [TS]

00:49:06   matters to you you should check out [TS]

00:49:07   Rackspace cloud files it's affordable [TS]

00:49:09   and the Akamai CDN is bundled at no [TS]

00:49:12   additional charge so you can stop [TS]

00:49:13   waiting you can learn more about this at [TS]

00:49:15   Rackspace cloud comm and visit visit the [TS]

00:49:19   site and take a look around and try it [TS]

00:49:22   out that's it stop waiting you know CD [TS]

00:49:29   ends I'm always annoyed when people [TS]

00:49:32   don't you see the ends now aren't you [TS]

00:49:33   kind of annoyed if you go to a website [TS]

00:49:34   that you feel like is a big website and [TS]

00:49:36   you realize that not using a CDN well it [TS]

00:49:38   doesn't make sense it doesn't make sense [TS]

00:49:40   because they're setting themselves up to [TS]

00:49:41   for failure it's not like it spends if [TS]

00:49:44   it's 2011 it did I sleep it's cheaper [TS]

00:49:47   but that's why use a CDN because if you [TS]

00:49:49   have to pay for your own bandwidth and [TS]

00:49:50   you had even remotely popular site it's [TS]

00:49:52   ridiculously expensive it's cheaper to [TS]

00:49:54   put the stuff on the CDN and put it near [TS]

00:49:55   the edge closer to people but also the [TS]

00:49:57   existence of CD ends is kind of like [TS]

00:49:59   it's like a symptom of the of the [TS]

00:50:02   internet like it's like a failure in the [TS]

00:50:04   internet itself that CDNs are necessary [TS]

00:50:06   and they are definitely necessary [TS]

00:50:07   because they are and it's private [TS]

00:50:09   businesses making money off Annie that's [TS]

00:50:11   there which is it would be much better [TS]

00:50:13   if these read-only files were closer to [TS]

00:50:15   our customers and the internet by itself [TS]

00:50:18   can't do that for you so businesses are [TS]

00:50:20   built on the Internet to do that are [TS]

00:50:21   called CD ends and they've just become [TS]

00:50:22   just mandatory for like every business [TS]

00:50:25   that wants to have anything to do with [TS]

00:50:26   content and I guess it's a thriving [TS]

00:50:28   ecosystem of lots of different companies [TS]

00:50:30   competing and I guess we're seeing [TS]

00:50:31   competition work but it seems almost [TS]

00:50:33   like it's and I know you can't call it a [TS]

00:50:38   flaw on the internet but it's it's [TS]

00:50:40   almost like if you were building the [TS]

00:50:41   Internet - or in Vegas they already [TS]

00:50:43   built that Internet three or four or [TS]

00:50:44   five you would say well what we've [TS]

00:50:47   learned now [TS]

00:50:47   is that there is this class of data that [TS]

00:50:50   benefits from being closer to the [TS]

00:50:52   customers and massively distributed so [TS]

00:50:54   we need to build that into the network [TS]

00:50:55   itself because it's such a common need [TS]

00:50:58   and you know yeah just the idea that [TS]

00:51:01   there are thousands of people [TS]

00:51:02   downloading the same thing from servers [TS]

00:51:06   that are not geographically close to [TS]

00:51:08   them at all and it just it seems so old [TS]

00:51:10   old-fashioned it yeah and that same [TS]

00:51:13   data's gotta go twenty hops around the [TS]

00:51:15   world to that person and then the guy in [TS]

00:51:17   the house next to him does the same [TS]

00:51:18   thing and he asked for the same data so [TS]

00:51:20   all I back across the world and gets it [TS]

00:51:21   CDN is a way to go so some dupe dooba I [TS]

00:51:25   don't know how to say this guy Dobie W [TS]

00:51:28   anyway one of the our friends the Nerds [TS]

00:51:31   of the chatroom says that wouldn't it be [TS]

00:51:35   cool I'm paraphrasing it wouldn't be [TS]

00:51:38   cool if and when Apple does this this [TS]

00:51:40   stuff in the cloud they would have to [TS]

00:51:42   have a little Nass box that would sort [TS]

00:51:45   of cash everything in your in your local [TS]

00:51:47   on your on your land and people still [TS]

00:51:51   say land yeah [TS]

00:51:53   there's no no better word for really [TS]

00:51:55   people still don't say when regular [TS]

00:51:57   people don't only IT people do but [TS]

00:51:59   people do still say land that would be a [TS]

00:52:02   note product like a little thing all it [TS]

00:52:04   does is just cache the stuff that you [TS]

00:52:06   you frequently access well that's [TS]

00:52:09   actually that's actually it's being in [TS]

00:52:10   the North Carolina data center I've seen [TS]

00:52:12   a couple stories floating around about [TS]

00:52:13   this and I think that they're probably [TS]

00:52:14   on the money because it I think this is [TS]

00:52:17   coming uh the idea getting rid of [TS]

00:52:20   another ridiculous limitation in apples [TS]

00:52:21   sort of iTunes i life thing which is [TS]

00:52:23   that if you bought a song from itunes [TS]

00:52:26   and you've lost it because you [TS]

00:52:28   accidentally deleted it or whatever [TS]

00:52:29   Apple was like yeah too bad about that [TS]

00:52:31   you want to buy it again and that's not [TS]

00:52:34   true of applications yeah even though [TS]

00:52:36   Apple you know I remember one night the [TS]

00:52:38   App Store first came out were like well [TS]

00:52:39   if I already bought this what should I [TS]

00:52:42   do I mean it doesn't seem to recognize [TS]

00:52:44   that I bought it before it just has a [TS]

00:52:45   Buy button I don't I don't want to buy [TS]

00:52:46   it again I just want it in the people [TS]

00:52:48   like no no I just hit the Buy button [TS]

00:52:48   it'll bring up a dialog that says oh it [TS]

00:52:50   looks like you've already bought this [TS]

00:52:51   would you like it for free and that [TS]

00:52:52   still freaks people out to this day [TS]

00:52:54   anyone new to iOS if you tell them well [TS]

00:52:56   I went on this other thing and and even [TS]

00:52:58   though I bought a ready can I have it [TS]

00:52:59   all you can't just hit the Buy button [TS]

00:53:01   you sure [TS]

00:53:01   you sure I'm not buying again no you're [TS]

00:53:02   not buying again trust me and they hit [TS]

00:53:04   the button and they get a little [TS]

00:53:05   friendly dialogue that says it looks [TS]

00:53:06   like you already bought this again and [TS]

00:53:07   they feel relief that's kind of a bad UI [TS]

00:53:09   for the whole experience maybe is [TS]

00:53:11   intentionally that way but it's much [TS]

00:53:13   better than the itunes experience [TS]

00:53:15   whereas if you lose your song tough luck [TS]

00:53:16   now coming for someone who did a digital [TS]

00:53:21   media store or way back in the year 2002 [TS]

00:53:24   in the midst of time I work for an [TS]

00:53:26   e-book company that was one of the [TS]

00:53:28   biggest benefits that we would sell to [TS]

00:53:29   people said yet you buy this digital [TS]

00:53:31   softness so what if I lose my file what [TS]

00:53:33   if my hard drive gets corrupted website [TS]

00:53:34   now don't worry we keep track of [TS]

00:53:35   everything you bought at digital we have [TS]

00:53:37   a record we say you bought this that and [TS]

00:53:38   the other thing if you ever want to [TS]

00:53:40   redownload your book just come to your [TS]

00:53:41   bookshelf page big big selling point of [TS]

00:53:43   the website go to your bookshelf you [TS]

00:53:45   know you have ownership of these things [TS]

00:53:46   redownload any book you've ever bought [TS]

00:53:48   we keep track of everything forever and [TS]

00:53:50   ever it's your bookshelf it's just like [TS]

00:53:52   having a bookshelf at home these ebooks [TS]

00:53:53   are real books you know you can make a [TS]

00:53:55   collection of them and they say boy [TS]

00:53:56   that's great I can redownload whatever I [TS]

00:53:58   want they feel more comfortable about [TS]

00:53:59   the experience of buying this digital [TS]

00:54:01   media which is sort of you know [TS]

00:54:02   ephemeral to them and they're afraid it [TS]

00:54:04   might go away in a puff of smoke at any [TS]

00:54:05   moment which is true [TS]

00:54:06   listen to the back up show so the fact [TS]

00:54:11   that Apple came out with a music star [TS]

00:54:12   we're like well I remember I was hearing [TS]

00:54:14   about the I can start like surely [TS]

00:54:15   they'll do that same thing because like [TS]

00:54:16   this the whole point of making a digital [TS]

00:54:18   media store is you just want the other [TS]

00:54:20   day why would they not do that why would [TS]

00:54:22   I not do that now the reason they didn't [TS]

00:54:24   do that as far as I've been able to [TS]

00:54:26   glean is that not because Apple is [TS]

00:54:29   stupid about digital media but because [TS]

00:54:31   the people that were making a deal with [TS]

00:54:32   the record labels had crazy notions [TS]

00:54:35   about everything and one of their crazy [TS]

00:54:36   notions was all right Apple will give [TS]

00:54:38   you some music that you can try to do [TS]

00:54:40   this crazy digital download thing with [TS]

00:54:42   but but we're only going to let you in [TS]

00:54:44   the contract let a customer download [TS]

00:54:46   that song once so they pay you $0.99 you [TS]

00:54:49   give a 60 cents or whatever and then you [TS]

00:54:51   let them download that song one time you [TS]

00:54:52   do not let them download it again [TS]

00:54:53   because I heard for my grandson the [TS]

00:54:56   downloading a thing more than one time [TS]

00:54:58   means more than one person is getting [TS]

00:54:59   him rent so one download per song and I [TS]

00:55:01   believe according to all the vague [TS]

00:55:03   smokey rumors that I've read that that [TS]

00:55:05   was somewhere either was or still is [TS]

00:55:07   somewhere in all their music contracts [TS]

00:55:08   one download per purchase now you can [TS]

00:55:11   bet Apple has been trying as hard as [TS]

00:55:13   they possibly can with all their deals [TS]

00:55:15   if this if it's even true that this was [TS]

00:55:16   in their contract to say look guys this [TS]

00:55:18   one download for song thing it's [TS]

00:55:19   ridiculous [TS]

00:55:20   we're selling more music than Walmart [TS]

00:55:23   for you guys we have 70% of the market [TS]

00:55:25   can we just get that Clause out of there [TS]

00:55:26   because it's stupid and it just makes [TS]

00:55:28   people pissed off on their hard drive [TS]

00:55:29   dive and lose all their music and they [TS]

00:55:30   come to us and they say you know oh I [TS]

00:55:32   want my music backs and we have to go [TS]

00:55:34   you know no backsies because look at the [TS]

00:55:36   agreement that you clicked on it says if [TS]

00:55:37   you lose your music tough lock and it [TS]

00:55:39   does all say that and everything and [TS]

00:55:40   sometimes they'll say okay well we'll [TS]

00:55:42   give you I've heard some some people who [TS]

00:55:44   have been successfully able to tell [TS]

00:55:47   Apple that they would like some music [TS]

00:55:48   they already purchased and Apple would [TS]

00:55:50   like you know sort of give it to them [TS]

00:55:51   hush-hush okay here you go and I've [TS]

00:55:53   heard and I did this is I haven't heard [TS]

00:55:56   this from an Apple person but I've heard [TS]

00:55:57   this like out there that third hand yeah [TS]

00:56:01   third hand that one there's like a one [TS]

00:56:04   time we will give you everything you [TS]

00:56:06   bought claws like once if you if you if [TS]

00:56:10   you lose everything and I think this is [TS]

00:56:12   set up for those cases of catastrophic [TS]

00:56:15   failure I had a computer it was a some [TS]

00:56:18   kind of Mac and it crashed I had a [TS]

00:56:20   problem I don't really understand it but [TS]

00:56:22   they gave me a new Drive and now all my [TS]

00:56:24   music is gone and I hate you and they'll [TS]

00:56:26   say don't hate us you can have it all [TS]

00:56:28   back everything that you bought from us [TS]

00:56:31   but only once customer service people [TS]

00:56:33   want to have something in their back [TS]

00:56:34   pocket yeah more service that you can [TS]

00:56:36   pull out in the extreme cases where you [TS]

00:56:38   can just really make the person happy [TS]

00:56:40   now how they work that out with the with [TS]

00:56:41   the labels and this mythical contract [TS]

00:56:43   clause that may or may not exist I don't [TS]

00:56:44   know but we both heard of that happening [TS]

00:56:46   but the rumor going on now also tied to [TS]

00:56:49   North Carolina data center as all rumor [TS]

00:56:51   as all apple rumors must be it's like [TS]

00:56:54   area 51 now the data so you gotta have [TS]

00:56:57   something to that base you know is a big [TS]

00:56:59   deal lots of money it's an actual [TS]

00:57:01   physical building so you can think about [TS]

00:57:02   it's like it's there man there's a [TS]

00:57:03   building it's gotta be something in [TS]

00:57:05   there aliens I don't know the thing is [TS]

00:57:08   that they're going to say well what [TS]

00:57:10   Apple is going to do now is not a [TS]

00:57:11   subscription service like Rhapsody where [TS]

00:57:13   you got unlimited music for a monthly [TS]

00:57:14   fee or something like that but what [TS]

00:57:15   they're going to do is finally say that [TS]

00:57:17   anything you purchase to us applications [TS]

00:57:19   music whatever [TS]

00:57:21   we will now expose the fact that we have [TS]

00:57:25   a record of that because obviously Apple [TS]

00:57:26   does have a record of it and lets you [TS]

00:57:27   redownload that from wherever you are so [TS]

00:57:29   if you set up a new Mac and you say hey [TS]

00:57:30   all that stuff that about me I can start [TS]

00:57:32   put it on this Mac now it will go out to [TS]

00:57:34   the magical Apple servers and say oh [TS]

00:57:35   here's all the songs that you bought put [TS]

00:57:36   them onto that Mac same you know [TS]

00:57:38   authorization for the Apple ID and fair [TS]

00:57:41   play and all that business or you know [TS]

00:57:43   not fair play in the case of music [TS]

00:57:44   without be around these days but for the [TS]

00:57:46   movies and everything like that Apple [TS]

00:57:48   you know the rules will all be the same [TS]

00:57:49   it'll just simply be that they that your [TS]

00:57:52   stuff has a server-side incarnation and [TS]

00:57:54   that the rumors about this data center [TS]

00:57:57   go all the way up to saying just oh now [TS]

00:57:59   to let you read down your music to say [TS]

00:58:01   everything is going to be on the search [TS]

00:58:03   everything you just look there all your [TS]

00:58:05   photos all your eye movies like [TS]

00:58:07   everything uh the probabilities [TS]

00:58:08   everything plans is that most of the [TS]

00:58:10   world does not have you know FiOS [TS]

00:58:12   connections like the privileged few [TS]

00:58:15   so anything that requires you uploading [TS]

00:58:17   75 gigabytes of video of your kid is [TS]

00:58:20   probably untenable for people with a [TS]

00:58:22   crappy cable modem that only does you [TS]

00:58:25   know one megabit up or something [TS]

00:58:27   but that's that's the far end of the [TS]

00:58:31   rumor the closer ram which i think is [TS]

00:58:32   much more reasonable as to say that [TS]

00:58:34   whatever they're going to call this next [TS]

00:58:36   iteration of itunes is going to have a [TS]

00:58:37   server side component and at the very [TS]

00:58:39   least it will let you start finally [TS]

00:58:40   redownload enough to vol ready purchased [TS]

00:58:42   I hope it's not more than that I hope [TS]

00:58:45   they do give some sort of server side [TS]

00:58:46   solution but I'm always wary when Apple [TS]

00:58:48   delves into the server side realm [TS]

00:58:50   because historically they have not [TS]

00:58:51   there's not been their strengths or is [TS]

00:58:54   the the euphemism that I heard in my [TS]

00:58:56   youth was that their expertise lies [TS]

00:58:57   elsewhere on this whole syncing for but [TS]

00:59:01   you know the but and and I I that seems [TS]

00:59:03   to be the case if you look at if you [TS]

00:59:04   look at mobile me and before it dot Mac [TS]

00:59:06   anything that had to do with syncing [TS]

00:59:08   which always really just piss-poor yeah [TS]

00:59:12   well that that's that's a hard problem [TS]

00:59:14   and the Google solution just thinking [TS]

00:59:15   not to do that show now but the Google [TS]

00:59:17   solution to syncing is there is no [TS]

00:59:19   syncing there is only the server and [TS]

00:59:21   yeah obviously Google does syncing but [TS]

00:59:23   it's a philosophical difference follows [TS]

00:59:24   all the differences that in Google's [TS]

00:59:26   case the canonical representation of [TS]

00:59:28   your data is on the server and your [TS]

00:59:30   client is if anything just a simple [TS]

00:59:32   cache yeah whereas apples vision [TS]

00:59:34   the world rooted in the time before the [TS]

00:59:37   internet had become as prominent as [TS]

00:59:39   Anytus is that your stuff is on your [TS]

00:59:41   computer and the server side component [TS]

00:59:43   is a way station for us to transfer to [TS]

00:59:45   other computers her to back it up or [TS]

00:59:47   whatever right at scenario you have to [TS]

00:59:49   do syncing because then you've got two [TS]

00:59:50   Macs and we just said that the Mac is [TS]

00:59:53   the canonical place so now you have two [TS]

00:59:54   Macs and they have to sort out who knows [TS]

00:59:56   what and get it all you know and [TS]

00:59:58   technically speaking there's [TS]

00:59:58   technically speaking there's [TS]

01:00:00   the difference is between these two blur [TS]

01:00:02   very quickly but philosophically [TS]

01:00:04   speaking if you come at it from the [TS]

01:00:06   perspective that the computer is [TS]

01:00:07   canonical you make different decisions [TS]

01:00:09   than the Google thing where that where [TS]

01:00:11   server-side is canonical I think long [TS]

01:00:13   term server side being canonical is the [TS]

01:00:16   right decision but lots of people don't [TS]

01:00:18   feel that way you see a lot of pushback [TS]

01:00:20   on Google with like I don't know my [TS]

01:00:21   stuff in the cloud I want to have a [TS]

01:00:23   local copy I want to feel like I own it [TS]

01:00:24   and never mind that technically [TS]

01:00:25   technical difference being the two may [TS]

01:00:27   blur to the point where there is no [TS]

01:00:29   distinction and that all your data is in [TS]

01:00:30   both places on both platforms but people [TS]

01:00:33   who are afraid of Big Brother or [TS]

01:00:35   whatever are don't like that about [TS]

01:00:38   Google going to like the lack of control [TS]

01:00:39   and and and they have reasons not to [TS]

01:00:41   like it like that recent thing where up [TS]

01:00:43   under Gmail users apparently lost all [TS]

01:00:45   their mail right for at least for a [TS]

01:00:46   period of time and then they were able [TS]

01:00:48   to restore some right but you don't know [TS]

01:00:50   like when that happens like people are [TS]

01:00:53   still like what am I going to get it [TS]

01:00:54   back because there are some cases where [TS]

01:00:55   people don't get their data back and so [TS]

01:00:57   there's still that barrier to overcome [TS]

01:00:59   so apples still firmly in the camp of [TS]

01:01:01   like your computer is yours we sell you [TS]

01:01:03   the stuff it's on your computer and [TS]

01:01:06   that's and that's the real [TS]

01:01:08   representation if we give you services [TS]

01:01:10   to help with that don't worry we're not [TS]

01:01:11   stealing all your data and we're [TS]

01:01:12   certainly not going to say that we're [TS]

01:01:13   the only place where your data is kept [TS]

01:01:17   those like it's three topics in one yeah [TS]

01:01:21   not bad [TS]

01:01:22   oh and and we're right in an hour too so [TS]

01:01:26   nobody can shout at us you know good [TS]

01:01:29   work man and your app acts all weekend [TS]

01:01:31   so you house house packs been crowded [TS]

01:01:34   yeah again I feel like you know that [TS]

01:01:37   that scene in Jerry Maguire where he's [TS]

01:01:38   in the hotel room by himself at night [TS]

01:01:40   with like the fever and the blanket [TS]

01:01:41   around them you know it comes up he [TS]

01:01:42   comes up with a mission statement with [TS]

01:01:44   the memo I went I'm a pax I just I sit [TS]

01:01:46   in that fever and I'm like listen listen [TS]

01:01:48   listen less money fewer tickets you know [TS]

01:01:53   that one with it because they can't even [TS]

01:01:56   look good that's what I want out of pax [TS]

01:01:58   I wanted to make less money and sell [TS]

01:02:01   fewer tickets because they moved from [TS]

01:02:03   the hinds Convention Center which is a [TS]

01:02:05   sort of a medium sized to small [TS]

01:02:06   convention center to the big giant I [TS]

01:02:09   don't know what it's called but the big [TS]

01:02:10   giant Boston expo convention center [TS]

01:02:12   which is just massive [TS]

01:02:13   but then they just sold more tickets and [TS]

01:02:15   that's not the way you know I said well [TS]

01:02:17   last year was everyone's complaining his [TS]

01:02:18   lines were too long and it was crowded [TS]

01:02:19   it was crazy you couldn't move so don't [TS]

01:02:22   worry we're going to a bigger Convention [TS]

01:02:23   Center next year I don't know what the [TS]

01:02:24   ratios are all I know is that I waited [TS]

01:02:25   on some monster lines today and the [TS]

01:02:28   bigger Convention Center I guess helped [TS]

01:02:30   you feel less crossed aerobic and [TS]

01:02:31   certainly gave the lines lots of room to [TS]

01:02:33   stretch out put some just hour-long [TS]

01:02:35   monster lines wait an hour only to be [TS]

01:02:38   turned away in the last 600 yards [TS]

01:02:40   because the closed the door then you got [TS]

01:02:42   to go to the overflow room then you guys [TS]

01:02:43   start waiting on the other line and it's [TS]

01:02:44   just yeah well so but I still enjoy it [TS]

01:02:48   still enjoy hanging out with the Nerds [TS]

01:02:50   seeing the Nerds talk seeing what there [TS]

01:02:52   is to see but I just wish that they [TS]

01:02:54   would sell fewer like out and of course [TS]

01:02:56   I would like it if they were just up the [TS]

01:02:58   price you know you want to sell fewer [TS]

01:02:59   tickets so if your dick is charged more [TS]

01:03:01   that was Jerry's theory too you know [TS]

01:03:03   fewer clients but we'll treat them [TS]

01:03:04   better and we'll charge them more [TS]

01:03:05   presumably but you know what happened to [TS]

01:03:07   him you gotta fire so obviously I don't [TS]

01:03:10   know how to run a convention I just wish [TS]

01:03:12   it wasn't quite as crowded but yeah I [TS]

01:03:13   will be there all week all weekend [TS]

01:03:15   waiting in lines I'll have fun there and [TS]

01:03:19   we'll be back for our regular time next [TS]

01:03:22   week Friday at noon Eastern right I hope [TS]

01:03:25   so [TS]

01:03:25   you don't have any more big packs [TS]

01:03:28   conferences to go to and I I won't [TS]

01:03:30   injure myself again we'll say okay [TS]

01:03:33   that's a promise so thanks everybody for [TS]

01:03:37   tuning in if you liked the show whatever [TS]

01:03:39   you've been doing for this show on [TS]

01:03:41   iTunes has been working because as we [TS]

01:03:44   were mentioning before the show started [TS]

01:03:46   this shows new and noteworthy again or [TS]

01:03:49   just noteworthy I guess I think people [TS]

01:03:52   have been downloading a lot but there [TS]

01:03:53   have been a lot of reviews coming in so [TS]

01:03:54   if you liked the show you should leave [TS]

01:03:55   like a 2 or 3 line review in there I [TS]

01:03:57   don't know how much that helps but no it [TS]

01:03:59   helped no it really helps it really kind [TS]

01:04:01   of bothered that this like you know [TS]

01:04:02   comment section on because I'm used to [TS]

01:04:05   everything I do have a comment section [TS]

01:04:06   hanging off the bottom of which is also [TS]

01:04:07   another show topic that we'll get to [TS]

01:04:08   eventually but since there's no comic [TS]

01:04:11   section comment section on the podcast I [TS]

01:04:13   read the reviews on the guide to [TS]

01:04:15   instinct it's my form of feedback on [TS]

01:04:17   there's nothing there I feel sad yeah [TS]

01:04:18   when we don't want to said John [TS]

01:04:21   of course by asking for comments I'm [TS]

01:04:23   also simply asking for people to [TS]

01:04:24   increase the number of bad comments [TS]

01:04:26   which will make me sad too but I like [TS]

01:04:27   bad comments again that's another show [TS]

01:04:29   topic I should add to list if you didn't [TS]

01:04:30   know it was already there the whole [TS]

01:04:32   online thing and if you can persuade me [TS]

01:04:34   to do comments cuz I haven't I'm not [TS]

01:04:37   sold I mean I wouldn't do it on the 5x5 [TS]

01:04:40   site because comments means you have to [TS]

01:04:42   have moderators it's just how big like [TS]

01:04:44   you know what the deal is there at least [TS]

01:04:45   what I would not try to persuade you to [TS]

01:04:47   do that but I'm just saying that by [TS]

01:04:48   their nature podcasts are not our medium [TS]

01:04:50   that happens over audio and it's not a [TS]

01:04:52   web page somewhere and definitely [TS]

01:04:55   another day another topic for another [TS]

01:04:57   day yes so thanks John have a great [TS]

01:05:01   weekend [TS]

01:05:12   you [TS]
