Roderick on the Line

Ep. 92: "Born on a Ball"

00:00:00   hello hey John I Maryland has gone [TS]

00:00:09   pretty well yeah yeah I've just been on [TS]

00:00:15   the internet this morning arguing about [TS]

00:00:16   the Beatles with some ding-a-lings i [TS]

00:00:19   wanna hear about that you're explaining [TS]

00:00:20   the universe to your daughter today [TS]

00:00:22   oh well i started doing that and then it [TS]

00:00:24   made me think that I needed that was [TS]

00:00:26   more important was to straighten out [TS]

00:00:29   some feelings haha yeah i was trying to [TS]

00:00:34   you know I i got the globe out she said [TS]

00:00:37   where does the Sun go and that seems [TS]

00:00:43   like a reasonable question so i got the [TS]

00:00:45   globe out and I got a baseball and i [TS]

00:00:48   said here's the earth and here's where [TS]

00:00:50   we live and the moon goes around there [TS]

00:00:54   is like this baseball at the Sun and [TS]

00:00:57   then i put i took a headlamp and put the [TS]

00:00:59   headlamp on and I stood far away from [TS]

00:01:02   the globe and ice was pointing the [TS]

00:01:04   headlamp at Seattle and I said when the [TS]

00:01:06   Sun shines on Seattle it's because it's [TS]

00:01:09   a big fireball that's far away but then [TS]

00:01:13   the globe turns and your you don't see [TS]

00:01:18   the Sun sets on the other side but then [TS]

00:01:20   the baseball of the Moon can always see [TS]

00:01:23   the Sun and so the baseball and I'm [TS]

00:01:25   shining the headlamp on the baseball [TS]

00:01:27   likessee Seattle's in the dark but the [TS]

00:01:30   baseball can see the Sun and then she [TS]

00:01:35   said why do we live on a ball [TS]

00:01:39   and I felt like that was a really good [TS]

00:01:41   question and the more I thought about it [TS]

00:01:43   the less i even had a pity answer for [TS]

00:01:50   why we live on the bond ball and [TS]

00:01:52   eventually I said we were born on a ball [TS]

00:01:55   and we will die on a ball and no one [TS]

00:01:59   every single person that you know every [TS]

00:02:01   single thing that you know was born on a [TS]

00:02:04   ball [TS]

00:02:07   no one knows why we'll all die on this [TS]

00:02:11   ball without ever knowing why [TS]

00:02:13   end of conversation [TS]

00:02:19   no i don't think so i think it's only [TS]

00:02:21   the beginning she took that and looked [TS]

00:02:24   thoughtful and kind of wandered off to [TS]

00:02:27   think about it I kind of makes me see [TS]

00:02:30   the appeal of the whole flatter thing [TS]

00:02:31   though [TS]

00:02:32   well yeah sure I mean I could sit and [TS]

00:02:36   explain explain that the earth is a [TS]

00:02:38   piece of paper and if you go to the ends [TS]

00:02:41   you'll fall off but that it that makes [TS]

00:02:43   no more sense but what about Santa [TS]

00:02:45   well you you bring up a good question [TS]

00:02:49   because the appears the problem on the [TS]

00:02:54   one hand i know that i am not smarter [TS]

00:02:57   than everyone on earth [TS]

00:03:00   on the other hand i don't actually [TS]

00:03:02   believe that which so Santa part know [TS]

00:03:06   the fact that i'm not smarter than [TS]

00:03:07   everybody on our so on the one hand I [TS]

00:03:10   feel like I'm trying to reinvent [TS]

00:03:12   christmas and i know that i am i'm one [TS]

00:03:16   of many many many people throughout [TS]

00:03:19   history who have said Christmas is dumb [TS]

00:03:22   but aspects of it are great i would just [TS]

00:03:26   like to take those aspects that I like [TS]

00:03:28   and revisit a kind of pagan animist [TS]

00:03:34   solstice holiday but also you know like [TS]

00:03:38   as Hodgman says slowly kill a tree in my [TS]

00:03:44   house you know practice Christmas in [TS]

00:03:48   some of its splendor but without [TS]

00:03:51   succumbing to [TS]

00:03:52   all the nightmare but at the same time I [TS]

00:03:56   know that I I like I i know that [TS]

00:03:58   hubristic people throughout history have [TS]

00:04:01   tried to do this and they all end up at [TS]

00:04:04   Grandma's house opening package after [TS]

00:04:08   package of socks while their children [TS]

00:04:12   are showered with Barbies that does seem [TS]

00:04:16   pretty unfair in Roma it almost seems [TS]

00:04:19   like like there's nothing i can do even [TS]

00:04:22   at like we march knowingly into [TS]

00:04:26   catastrophe because the only other [TS]

00:04:29   option is that you completely reinvent [TS]

00:04:33   the world and celebrate festivus but [TS]

00:04:37   anyway has met Santa a couple of times [TS]

00:04:41   really and I has not been particularly [TS]

00:04:48   interested or thrilled like it is very [TS]

00:04:51   uninterested in hanging with Santa [TS]

00:04:53   well here's the pitch it once and it did [TS]

00:04:55   not go well I don't you wide if you've [TS]

00:04:58   noticed when you get up close to the [TS]

00:05:00   real-life Santa's the department store [TS]

00:05:02   Santa's I feel like most of the time [TS]

00:05:05   they are all Jewish men and they are [TS]

00:05:08   drunk like inch in the only the only way [TS]

00:05:13   they can deal with that cognitive [TS]

00:05:14   dissonance [TS]

00:05:15   yeah that we went to boeing field the [TS]

00:05:17   other day because Santa was Santa was [TS]

00:05:19   coming and there were 2,000 kids there [TS]

00:05:26   to see Santa arrived and I'm standing [TS]

00:05:30   I'm like will send that there's there's [TS]

00:05:32   going to be an airplane which is going [TS]

00:05:33   to be interesting but then Santa's going [TS]

00:05:36   to get out and who nobody's I mean like [TS]

00:05:38   my baby is not going to care and my [TS]

00:05:42   baby's mother standing there said I [TS]

00:05:45   swear to you [TS]

00:05:46   what do you mean Santa's arriving in an [TS]

00:05:48   airplane [TS]

00:05:50   that said do you think that they have [TS]

00:05:54   figured out a way to get reindeer to fly [TS]

00:05:56   what do you think is gonna happen is it [TS]

00:05:59   Seattle what would you expect that's how [TS]

00:06:00   she arrived on a plane where the airport [TS]

00:06:02   and I honestly think that this adult [TS]

00:06:05   woman had not so we considered what [TS]

00:06:09   exactly was about to happen like she she [TS]

00:06:11   maybe was holding out a little bit of [TS]

00:06:15   expectation that there would be reindeer [TS]

00:06:17   but in any case Santa did arrive in a [TS]

00:06:20   yellow t Havilland beaver which is a [TS]

00:06:24   wonderful airplane and was thrilled to [TS]

00:06:26   see the airplane and I was thrilled [TS]

00:06:29   it was a very it was a beautiful beaver [TS]

00:06:31   highly polished this is a seaplane know [TS]

00:06:36   it can be made into a seaplane the de [TS]

00:06:40   Havilland beaver is one of the great [TS]

00:06:41   airplanes it is a Canadian airplane they [TS]

00:06:45   don't make them anymore they're classic [TS]

00:06:47   airplanes but every one of them is still [TS]

00:06:49   everyone they ever made is still flying [TS]

00:06:50   because all pilots recognize that this [TS]

00:06:55   is the great the de Havilland beaver is [TS]

00:06:58   the great bush plane like it they don't [TS]

00:07:03   know how many of them made but I swear [TS]

00:07:05   to you they are all still in the air [TS]

00:07:06   because people polish them to within an [TS]

00:07:09   inch of their lives because they're the [TS]

00:07:10   perfect for the perfect plane is now [TS]

00:07:12   stratovarius of Bush planes exactly the [TS]

00:07:14   Stradivarius of Bush planes the de [TS]

00:07:16   Havilland beaver it has a rotary engine [TS]

00:07:18   and nothing can compare to the sound of [TS]

00:07:20   a rotary engine in full flight in full [TS]

00:07:23   song anyway this plan shows up Santa [TS]

00:07:27   gets down out of the plane with his with [TS]

00:07:29   mrs. Claus and right away you see mrs. [TS]

00:07:33   Claus's outfit does not match Santa's [TS]

00:07:35   outfit their different Velvets like a [TS]

00:07:37   second marriage [TS]

00:07:38   well he have to figure though even if [TS]

00:07:41   even if it's even if its second mrs. [TS]

00:07:43   Claus the first thing she's gonna do i [TS]

00:07:45   mean i'm not i don't know women a [TS]

00:07:47   hundred percent but under but [TS]

00:07:50   ninety-four percent i know the first [TS]

00:07:52   thing she's going to do is if it is [TS]

00:07:54   Santa Claus outfit was made by his first [TS]

00:07:56   wife she's going to make him a new one [TS]

00:07:58   that matches hers you know what I mean [TS]

00:08:01   like this is just basic Claus [TS]

00:08:03   is science mm so her velvet outfit in [TS]

00:08:07   his Santa suit are different Velvets and [TS]

00:08:09   right away she foxy know she was a [TS]

00:08:12   little old lady mrs. Claus second thing [TS]

00:08:15   I notice is that Santa is a Jewish man [TS]

00:08:16   and I know that from you know from my [TS]

00:08:19   studies of phrenology haha and that he's [TS]

00:08:24   also drunk that he wasn't piloting the [TS]

00:08:28   heavily wasn't piloting the plane he was [TS]

00:08:30   leaving and also sad was riding in the [TS]

00:08:32   back he wasn't even co-piloting he was [TS]

00:08:35   riding in the back like luggage [TS]

00:08:37   yeah and then his elves are just two [TS]

00:08:41   children that are clearly his [TS]

00:08:43   grandchildren not elves at all but [TS]

00:08:45   children and so i'm thinking i put on my [TS]

00:08:50   hat for this I got I got out of my house [TS]

00:08:53   might be able to get away with a lot of [TS]

00:08:55   shit when you're pretending to be Santa [TS]

00:08:58   yeah so he comes he works the line he's [TS]

00:08:59   a great he's very nice he tells [TS]

00:09:01   everybody you know he's like pre-selling [TS]

00:09:03   the like are going to come see me at the [TS]

00:09:04   santa thing you know he doesn't really [TS]

00:09:07   didn't really talk like my dad will talk [TS]

00:09:08   like that or like a Jewish then and I'm [TS]

00:09:12   thinking you know just more interested [TS]

00:09:14   in the airplane and I am too but then as [TS]

00:09:20   he as he marches off i'm i'm i'm i'm [TS]

00:09:22   back to thinking lamp from caught in [TS]

00:09:24   this world of like do I i'm busy trying [TS]

00:09:29   to explain to her that the moon is a [TS]

00:09:31   baseball but with my other hand I'm [TS]

00:09:33   gonna tell her that Santa Claus is real [TS]

00:09:36   well I brought up for a reason I think [TS]

00:09:37   they both have a lot in common [TS]

00:09:39   especially in that there are certain [TS]

00:09:43   facts in the world that grown-ups you [TS]

00:09:47   know kind of know or you know learning [TS]

00:09:49   people who were grown-ups now but you [TS]

00:09:52   know honestly in the case of the solar [TS]

00:09:55   system and I do like the fact that you [TS]

00:09:57   were in fact the center of that solar [TS]

00:09:59   system in your description not the [TS]

00:10:01   headlamp on [TS]

00:10:02   yeah alright but in with both Santa and [TS]

00:10:05   the solar system it's only the grown-ups [TS]

00:10:07   that are troubled really troubled by not [TS]

00:10:10   being able to explain [TS]

00:10:12   all of the inconsistencies yeah I think [TS]

00:10:15   I think I mean maybe maybe it's [TS]

00:10:17   different with the earth but I mean [TS]

00:10:18   there's kids every day there's so much [TS]

00:10:20   shit that a little kid does not [TS]

00:10:22   understand even if you explain something [TS]

00:10:24   really simple flawlessly and there [TS]

00:10:26   aren't that many things that simply to [TS]

00:10:27   explain flawlessly [TS]

00:10:28   still they still don't understand [TS]

00:10:30   they're still gonna have some great [TS]

00:10:31   question some kind of you know Steve [TS]

00:10:32   Allen type question or Bill Cosby type [TS]

00:10:34   question it's gonna make you feel like a [TS]

00:10:35   dumbass [TS]

00:10:36   no matter what pops yeah but you know [TS]

00:10:39   they say they do say the darndest things [TS]

00:10:40   but you know the you know I just think [TS]

00:10:43   about like the kind of like media that [TS]

00:10:45   she consumes like she understands that [TS]

00:10:46   like cartoon reality you know what you [TS]

00:10:50   can do to hit somebody with a mallet in [TS]

00:10:52   a cartoon is not the same thing I hope [TS]

00:10:54   that she could do to me with a mallet so [TS]

00:10:56   your little girl is old enough to [TS]

00:10:57   understand that my little girl still [TS]

00:10:59   does not still would happily hit me with [TS]

00:11:01   a mallet she believes in the single [TS]

00:11:03   mallet theory [TS]

00:11:04   well the that the thing I'm I guess I'm [TS]

00:11:07   wrestling with as I have considered [TS]

00:11:09   christmas is that when I was growing up [TS]

00:11:14   even though we were a pretty secular [TS]

00:11:16   house I mean my mom took us to church [TS]

00:11:18   because church was a social thing in her [TS]

00:11:24   own childhood and she didn't want to [TS]

00:11:27   deprive us of like methodism hope [TS]

00:11:31   whatever didn't want to deprive us of [TS]

00:11:33   the hymns um but I remember as a kid you [TS]

00:11:40   know seven eight nine years old you know [TS]

00:11:44   during the seventies obviously [TS]

00:11:45   Christianity was still in its still [TS]

00:11:50   provided the popular culture around [TS]

00:11:52   Christmas time there was no there was no [TS]

00:11:55   prohibition against talking about the [TS]

00:11:57   baby Jesus on in crime TV right when he [TS]

00:12:01   said happy holiday season you really [TS]

00:12:02   meant Merry Christmas you mean merry [TS]

00:12:04   christmas and and in in fact like there [TS]

00:12:07   was a tremendous amount of like [TS]

00:12:10   sanctimonious religiosity in in every I [TS]

00:12:16   mean at the end of the Happy Days [TS]

00:12:18   christmas special or whatever they all [TS]

00:12:19   the camera zoomed in on the star at the [TS]

00:12:23   top of the tree and there was some [TS]

00:12:24   admonition that we [TS]

00:12:25   should remember the reason for the [TS]

00:12:27   season or whatever it was very you know [TS]

00:12:29   Jesus was at the center of the game [TS]

00:12:32   until the culture wars and the and the [TS]

00:12:37   you know the feminazis yeah and the [TS]

00:12:42   Islamic Nazis took Jesus away guess so [TS]

00:12:47   but I mean if you go back to know [TS]

00:12:49   actually it's definitely feminazis to [TS]

00:12:51   blame but if you go back to you know [TS]

00:12:53   that should charlie brown christmas and [TS]

00:12:56   the way that they handle you know the [TS]

00:12:57   shepherds abiding in the field it it's [TS]

00:13:00   jesus is not the center of even like [TS]

00:13:03   little drummer boy he is but he's the [TS]

00:13:05   center of it as like a little baby it's [TS]

00:13:07   not it's not that the Savior I mean I [TS]

00:13:09   guess it is in some sense but it's [TS]

00:13:10   always I think it's always been coded [TS]

00:13:12   has always been a little bit complicated [TS]

00:13:14   but this is something interesting you [TS]

00:13:16   said I want to make sure not to lose [TS]

00:13:17   though is that when you described like [TS]

00:13:19   having the trying like make your peace [TS]

00:13:20   with some version of Christmas that that [TS]

00:13:23   isn't you know totally disgusting i kind [TS]

00:13:27   of think that's what everybody had does [TS]

00:13:29   and I think it's kind of what everybody [TS]

00:13:30   has always done well but this is so this [TS]

00:13:33   is my challenge because I some of my [TS]

00:13:35   favorite memories as a kid are solitary [TS]

00:13:38   moments that i spent in a in a dark room [TS]

00:13:42   it is sitting with your disappointment [TS]

00:13:46   and confusion that this applies [TS]

00:13:48   throughout the year some of my favorite [TS]

00:13:51   moments are sitting alone in a dark room [TS]

00:13:52   but but around Christmastime especially [TS]

00:13:55   like being there with the tree and the [TS]

00:13:57   lights are off the trees blinking and [TS]

00:14:00   it's quiet outside and maybe the snow is [TS]

00:14:02   coming down but really striving inside [TS]

00:14:05   myself to find two to access the sacred [TS]

00:14:10   to find I understood that it was a [TS]

00:14:14   holiday about God and about the you know [TS]

00:14:21   about the hot the the higher-ups [TS]

00:14:24   like the higher up ideas of selflessness [TS]

00:14:29   and giving and sacrifice and even if i [TS]

00:14:35   even as a kid I didn't have all the [TS]

00:14:38   judeo-christian language but I [TS]

00:14:43   understood that that's what we were [TS]

00:14:45   trying to that was the practice of [TS]

00:14:48   Christmas and we were trying to access [TS]

00:14:50   those those ideas in ourselves and those [TS]

00:14:54   feelings and so that's and and you know [TS]

00:14:57   ended the thing about december is it is [TS]

00:15:01   in a lot of ways a very sacred feeling [TS]

00:15:04   time it's the darkest day of the year it [TS]

00:15:09   is the very vulnerable in December yeah [TS]

00:15:12   and-and-and it feel you know it is the [TS]

00:15:14   inn in a way the quietest month [TS]

00:15:18   everything is sleeping and so that [TS]

00:15:22   feeling which which was connected to [TS]

00:15:25   this this goulash of culture a little [TS]

00:15:30   bit baby Jesus a little bit Star of [TS]

00:15:33   Bethlehem which it wasn't clear what the [TS]

00:15:35   Star of Bethlehem was exactly but it was [TS]

00:15:37   something in the sky that was both [TS]

00:15:41   beautiful and also like awesome and all [TS]

00:15:45   these middle eastern stories but also [TS]

00:15:50   Santa and the stores and the bells and [TS]

00:15:54   data and all kind all comes together to [TS]

00:15:56   create this very powerful and it for me [TS]

00:15:59   very personal thing that I wouldn't want [TS]

00:16:06   to deprive my child of you know like [TS]

00:16:09   that was the one time of year where I i [TS]

00:16:12   would legitimately kind of sit myself [TS]

00:16:16   down close my eyes turn my face to [TS]

00:16:19   heaven and say are you there god it's me [TS]

00:16:24   it's me heat [TS]

00:16:26   la marque marga mark again Eric you're [TS]

00:16:32   hoping you're open you're giving him a [TS]

00:16:33   shot you're saying here danced and had [TS]

00:16:35   time to go to the big game and like [TS]

00:16:37   opening the heart and saying uh I want [TS]

00:16:42   to be generous [TS]

00:16:44   I want to love instead of hate i want to [TS]

00:16:48   you know all these things i was reading [TS]

00:16:50   this fascinating article the other day [TS]

00:16:54   about a Japanese zero pilot during Pearl [TS]

00:17:02   Harbor who crashed his plane on a [TS]

00:17:04   hawaiian island after bombing Pearl [TS]

00:17:07   Harbor crash you know he was like she's [TS]

00:17:09   basically his plane was disabled and he [TS]

00:17:11   crashed on this Hawaiian island that did [TS]

00:17:13   not have a telephone and they were about [TS]

00:17:17   a hundred and fifty Native Hawaiians [TS]

00:17:19   that lived on this island and three [TS]

00:17:23   japanese people two of them born in [TS]

00:17:28   america won a Japanese immigrant who [TS]

00:17:32   were living together with the Hawaiians [TS]

00:17:34   on this island and this pilot crashes [TS]

00:17:36   his plane there and they don't know [TS]

00:17:41   about Pearl Harbor it hasn't happened [TS]

00:17:43   they didn't get a phone call and it [TS]

00:17:46   hasn't you know their shortwave radio [TS]

00:17:47   has to wait until the until two o'clock [TS]

00:17:50   in the morning to work or whatever and [TS]

00:17:52   so this pilot crashes his plane and [TS]

00:17:54   everybody's like oh how unfortunate we [TS]

00:17:58   should like we should help this person [TS]

00:17:59   we we don't speak he doesn't speak [TS]

00:18:02   English [TS]

00:18:03   the Hawaiians didn't speak Japanese so [TS]

00:18:05   they're like let's help this down a [TS]

00:18:06   pilot and they bring them into town and [TS]

00:18:09   somebody's like well let's go fetch the [TS]

00:18:11   those Japanese people and maybe they can [TS]

00:18:14   talk to him and so the the Japanese who [TS]

00:18:18   were living on the island come talk to [TS]

00:18:21   the pilot figure out what happened [TS]

00:18:23   a pilot in lists them in a scheme to [TS]

00:18:33   get his get his papers back from the the [TS]

00:18:39   chief of the island and burn the plane [TS]

00:18:42   and like and basically the these three [TS]

00:18:44   japanese conspire with the pilot it ends [TS]

00:18:49   up in a battle between the the Native [TS]

00:18:54   Hawaiians and these and the the pilot [TS]

00:18:56   and his conspirators and on the basis of [TS]

00:19:01   this incident this was the justification [TS]

00:19:06   for part of the justification that the [TS]

00:19:08   department of war used to start talking [TS]

00:19:11   about internment camps because on Pearl [TS]

00:19:15   Harbor Day an actual incident where [TS]

00:19:19   Japanese pilot crashed on an island and [TS]

00:19:24   and native you know like born in America [TS]

00:19:28   people of Japanese descent came to his [TS]

00:19:31   aid against their neighbors and so this [TS]

00:19:35   is cited as like a little-known incident [TS]

00:19:39   but that was in all the memos that went [TS]

00:19:41   to Washington were like what you know [TS]

00:19:43   the Japanese in San Francisco if there's [TS]

00:19:46   an invasion [TS]

00:19:47   can we can we trust them over this is [TS]

00:19:50   turning into a happy Christmas story cuz [TS]

00:19:51   cuz its sense up until about 90 seconds [TS]

00:19:54   ago you really had me I thought I [TS]

00:19:56   thought I thought what was gonna happen [TS]

00:19:57   was he with the land you would get out [TS]

00:20:00   he does he realize you just see the star [TS]

00:20:03   in the sky [TS]

00:20:04   well that's not over simplified he he [TS]

00:20:06   would crash land lightly and think okay [TS]

00:20:09   I need to repair my plane but for now [TS]

00:20:11   i'm gonna dress up as a Dickensian [TS]

00:20:13   character haha and fit in and and while [TS]

00:20:16   he was waiting for his part to arrive [TS]

00:20:17   from from Tokyo that he would learn the [TS]

00:20:21   true meaning of Christmas when that he [TS]

00:20:22   would be embraced and will be kinda like [TS]

00:20:24   the Grinch meets tora tora tora there is [TS]

00:20:27   there actually is a there is there there [TS]

00:20:30   is a version of that story coming out of [TS]

00:20:33   the end of this story so get and tour [TS]

00:20:36   actually figures into it could be three [TS]

00:20:39   hours look because as I was researching [TS]

00:20:43   this story and and feeling like wow this [TS]

00:20:45   complicates man [TS]

00:20:47   others for me now this is this [TS]

00:20:49   complicates this story that we are we've [TS]

00:20:52   been telling ourselves for the last 70 [TS]

00:20:54   years which was that the I mean [TS]

00:20:56   obviously the internment camps were an [TS]

00:20:58   abomination but this is a this is an [TS]

00:21:03   incident that actually happened and and [TS]

00:21:08   and that the aid and succour that these [TS]

00:21:12   that the three local Japanese provided [TS]

00:21:15   this 0 pilot was not incidental like [TS]

00:21:17   they actually took up arms against their [TS]

00:21:19   neighbors and you know this was this was [TS]

00:21:24   disaffected well anyway so as in the [TS]

00:21:26   course of reach further researching this [TS]

00:21:29   story to make sure that it's not just [TS]

00:21:30   some but it's not some propagandized [TS]

00:21:34   revisionism I learned that the pilot who [TS]

00:21:40   led the assault on pearl harbor the the [TS]

00:21:45   the lead guy in the air [TS]

00:21:47   he also he and he is the man who [TS]

00:21:50   actually said tora tora tora into his [TS]

00:21:53   microphone [TS]

00:21:54   he's the heat that's it that's his quote [TS]

00:21:56   and I forget his name he went on to be [TS]

00:22:01   in the Battle of Midway he was he fought [TS]

00:22:04   in Burma he became like he was a he was [TS]

00:22:06   a hero in Japan and after the war as the [TS]

00:22:10   American government was prosecuting [TS]

00:22:13   Japanese a higher ups for war crimes [TS]

00:22:19   this pilot took offense at the idea [TS]

00:22:23   because he said you know this is this is [TS]

00:22:26   common in war and surely the Americans [TS]

00:22:30   tortured all their Japanese captives [TS]

00:22:32   just as we tortured our American [TS]

00:22:34   captives and so he said about after the [TS]

00:22:40   war to go interview all of the Japanese [TS]

00:22:43   prisoners of war as they were [TS]

00:22:44   repatriated from and as he did he found [TS]

00:22:48   them all [TS]

00:22:49   he he realized that their reports were [TS]

00:22:52   that in fact know they had not been [TS]

00:22:54   tortured they had been treated with [TS]

00:22:56   tremendous kindness by their captors and [TS]

00:22:59   fed and and treated as you know as as [TS]

00:23:03   well as American soldiers were being [TS]

00:23:08   treated [TS]

00:23:09   except they were you know obviously they [TS]

00:23:10   were in prison camps but they weren't [TS]

00:23:11   tortured they weren't starved they [TS]

00:23:14   weren't in that Eric marched they [TS]

00:23:16   weren't death marched and this this [TS]

00:23:19   pilots after war experiences worse it [TS]

00:23:24   was such a it was so alien to his notion [TS]

00:23:27   of the import the central importance of [TS]

00:23:30   revenge as like the court one of his [TS]

00:23:35   core beliefs like vengeance is how you [TS]

00:23:38   get justice and if someone murders your [TS]

00:23:41   family you you have a a bond of [TS]

00:23:45   vengeance with them and until you [TS]

00:23:47   achieve that vengeance you your [TS]

00:23:49   ancestors can't rest or whatever and he [TS]

00:23:52   was contrasting that with the what he [TS]

00:23:55   what he took to be the overtly christian [TS]

00:23:57   idea of forgive your enemy [TS]

00:24:02   and love your love your enemy and hit [TS]

00:24:07   the experience was so profound that he [TS]

00:24:08   became an evangelical Christian haha and [TS]

00:24:11   spent the rest of his life traveling the [TS]

00:24:13   world this is the guy who spearheaded [TS]

00:24:15   the Pearl Harbor attack spent the rest [TS]

00:24:18   of his life traveling the world speaking [TS]

00:24:21   as a you know like as a pretty powerful [TS]

00:24:24   public speaker like yes i bombed Pearl [TS]

00:24:26   Harbor and now i am now i have learned [TS]

00:24:31   to turn the other cheek and love my [TS]

00:24:33   enemy so yeah it's a Christmas miracle [TS]

00:24:38   it was a Christmas miracle and it all [TS]

00:24:40   and december 70 is just a couple of [TS]

00:24:42   weeks before Christmas [TS]

00:24:44   maybe that's the Christmas story I maybe [TS]

00:24:47   that's the version of Christmas I need [TS]

00:24:49   to introduce to my daughter [TS]

00:24:51   we don't it's not really a Jesus story [TS]

00:24:53   it's more about this Japanese zero pilot [TS]

00:24:59   right now I don't know [TS]

00:25:01   well you can you can lead a huge [TS]

00:25:04   surprise invasion and a piece and then [TS]

00:25:07   get away with it by by changing [TS]

00:25:09   religions it's certainly an option [TS]

00:25:13   interesting interesting story though [TS]

00:25:16   interesting conversations very very very [TS]

00:25:18   interesting indeed [TS]

00:25:20   and that is and i think my instinct as [TS]

00:25:23   we have covered that many times [TS]

00:25:25   ok my instincts for vengeance but what i [TS]

00:25:31   want i aspire to have my instinct beat [TS]

00:25:36   toward love and anyway this time of year [TS]

00:25:42   was always the one time of year when I [TS]

00:25:44   would really make a concerted effort to [TS]

00:25:48   like and I think it's true for a lot of [TS]

00:25:52   us get in the spirit of the season and [TS]

00:25:54   get you know get some get some love flow [TS]

00:25:56   and I don't know how to integrate that [TS]

00:26:00   this is the problem with not believing [TS]

00:26:02   in ghosts but being scared of ghosts [TS]

00:26:05   how do you integrate this this message [TS]

00:26:09   of you know like altruism and also [TS]

00:26:15   connection with a higher power and tree [TS]

00:26:18   worship at like how do you how do you [TS]

00:26:23   find a way to all of that outside of [TS]

00:26:26   institutional religious practice I don't [TS]

00:26:31   think it's that hard [TS]

00:26:33   I mean it's me again these are all [TS]

00:26:35   things that are only problematic if you [TS]

00:26:38   think it all needs to make sense [TS]

00:26:39   me and I think I mean you know who cares [TS]

00:26:42   what anybody else wants to do for [TS]

00:26:43   Christmas I mean you should do what [TS]

00:26:45   makes your relatives happy or whatever i [TS]

00:26:47   guess not that I think okay so here's [TS]

00:26:49   one thing with this amount obsess about [TS]

00:26:50   Christmas but the the i think that the [TS]

00:26:54   people who act as though this has always [TS]

00:26:57   been a solemn event about celebrating [TS]

00:27:01   the birth of the Savior of the Christian [TS]

00:27:05   you know the Christian Savior Jesus baby [TS]

00:27:08   yeah but I mean like lawyers ok so when [TS]

00:27:10   you get to the crux of what people what [TS]

00:27:12   it what is the stick everybody has up [TS]

00:27:13   there but about Christmas and they're [TS]

00:27:14   not being honored correctly at the heart [TS]

00:27:16   of it it seems like what they're saying [TS]

00:27:18   is you guys keep forgetting the [TS]

00:27:19   Christmas is really all about [TS]

00:27:21   celebrating the birth of Jesus who will [TS]

00:27:24   eventually a few years become the savior [TS]

00:27:26   of humanity and he was actually born in [TS]

00:27:29   September probably well but it's been in [TS]

00:27:31   that framework I think what they're [TS]

00:27:32   trying to say is those people are [TS]

00:27:34   understandably I mean if that's what [TS]

00:27:36   they believe I get that um the problem [TS]

00:27:39   is i think that his store history is not [TS]

00:27:41   in their favor but i think i think i [TS]

00:27:44   think one reason people are nominally in [TS]

00:27:47   a have yours for nominally been had the [TS]

00:27:50   panties and a lot about christmas [TS]

00:27:52   because it was excellent cover to drink [TS]

00:27:53   and and if they didn't have that [TS]

00:27:58   supernal buy-in then they would just [TS]

00:28:01   seem like a bunch of drunks but I mean [TS]

00:28:02   you look at what what is Christmas been [TS]

00:28:04   for like 200 years in the West it's been [TS]

00:28:07   about parties really certainly has been [TS]

00:28:10   about its been to a certain extent has [TS]

00:28:11   been about charity and stuff like that [TS]

00:28:13   but I [TS]

00:28:13   in it the the birth of the Christian [TS]

00:28:16   Savior has not been at the center of [TS]

00:28:18   Christmas for over a century and to act [TS]

00:28:20   any differently is just not sensible or [TS]

00:28:23   historically accurate there's always [TS]

00:28:25   been people who are very loud about [TS]

00:28:27   being mad that it's not more that way [TS]

00:28:29   but I don't think that's the way most [TS]

00:28:30   people do it sure there's tons of Jesus [TS]

00:28:32   that Jesus everywhere but but but look [TS]

00:28:35   what he was you no actually you know I'm [TS]

00:28:37   just saying passing my wife has a really [TS]

00:28:39   wackadoodle name for the manger scene [TS]

00:28:40   i've never heard she calls it a crash [TS]

00:28:43   yeah that's the name for I've never [TS]

00:28:44   heard that I was totally Christian I've [TS]

00:28:46   never heard that crash [TS]

00:28:47   yeah i thought that was the guy at the [TS]

00:28:49   compound no no not correct crash [TS]

00:28:53   yeah I ever heard it's a woman in our [TS]

00:28:55   home SS Christians it's a thing that it [TS]

00:28:59   the the crash became one of the bones of [TS]

00:29:02   contention in the last 20 years because [TS]

00:29:04   it used to be that you would have a [TS]

00:29:06   crash in front of every small town City [TS]

00:29:10   Hall i should do and then people were [TS]

00:29:14   mad because it was government property [TS]

00:29:16   in government [TS]

00:29:17   it was you know government-sponsored [TS]

00:29:18   crash and I have actually seen her you [TS]

00:29:21   in small towns where instead of a very [TS]

00:29:25   abstract instead of taking away abstract [TS]

00:29:28   like this i have i've seen somewhere [TS]

00:29:31   where different characters have been [TS]

00:29:33   added to try and take away the sting [TS]

00:29:36   I'm sorry LIC well I haven't seen that [TS]

00:29:38   like what so you know your bond it's [TS]

00:29:40   like a Wookiee there [TS]

00:29:42   mm then you know Marilyn Monroe is there [TS]

00:29:46   pretty soon it's like out there [TS]

00:29:49   what's going on I don't know what's [TS]

00:29:52   going on here does he'll everyone's [TS]

00:29:54   we're like I think they're trying to [TS]

00:29:55   like get it in like under the radar [TS]

00:29:56   screen where it used to be when I was a [TS]

00:29:58   kid you would have literal people [TS]

00:30:00   sitting in a tableau with an angelic you [TS]

00:30:05   know usually fake baby sitting there [TS]

00:30:06   baby couldn't do that kind of work you [TS]

00:30:08   have to use twins right it would be like [TS]

00:30:09   yeah you know in Hollywood but but no it [TS]

00:30:12   became more and more abstract until it [TS]

00:30:13   was creepy like was just like you know [TS]

00:30:15   just completely iconic but it was just [TS]

00:30:18   like 18 bowling pins all arranged [TS]

00:30:20   exactly in a rush of the box and a camel [TS]

00:30:23   but I don't know this gyre I've read a [TS]

00:30:26   story of the day of [TS]

00:30:27   where was I think was Oklahoma that [TS]

00:30:30   successfully basically with private [TS]

00:30:34   funding had allowed a 10 commandments [TS]

00:30:37   did you read about this attend [TS]

00:30:38   Commandments to be put all right in the [TS]

00:30:40   center of the court or the Statehouse [TS]

00:30:43   right yeah and you hear one single time [TS]

00:30:45   no Satanists oh they do this later and [TS]

00:30:48   Commandments this ad and they're going [TS]

00:30:50   to race twice as much money 20,000 [TS]

00:30:52   instead of ten thousand dollars to put [TS]

00:30:54   up their own thing to to the memory of [TS]

00:30:56   the memory to the historical and [TS]

00:31:01   literary Satan [TS]

00:31:03   oh sure not they're not talking about [TS]

00:31:04   the fallen angel that used to sit at the [TS]

00:31:06   right hand of God they are talking about [TS]

00:31:08   the literary Satan yeah yeah yeah I [TS]

00:31:11   don't think I guess they could get a guy [TS]

00:31:13   in a red suit with a pitchfork I don't [TS]

00:31:16   know I i I just I you know I know you're [TS]

00:31:19   a thinker and you think and I think even [TS]

00:31:20   just an Oklahoma big-time well and [TS]

00:31:23   that's that turns out that's the irony [TS]

00:31:24   is that in trying to railroad that [TS]

00:31:26   through this kind of snickering haha and [TS]

00:31:28   you know now we really got him way [TS]

00:31:29   they've opened the door to all this [TS]

00:31:31   other stuff but i don't i don't know i [TS]

00:31:33   mean i think it's together for this so [TS]

00:31:36   two quick things in passing at first was [TS]

00:31:38   always well in my late later adult years [TS]

00:31:40   I've always thought it's kind of strange [TS]

00:31:42   that we have this incredibly solemn [TS]

00:31:44   occasion in the dead of winter to [TS]

00:31:46   celebrate the birth of Jesus and then [TS]

00:31:48   you've got you got the Easter Bunny and [TS]

00:31:51   eggs and the Virgin see of of spring to [TS]

00:31:55   celebrate his truly truly horrible [TS]

00:31:58   crucifixion death right but he comes [TS]

00:32:01   back that's true yeah and the thing [TS]

00:32:03   about hit the thing about his a perfect [TS]

00:32:04   Brian the dog to on the Family Guy show [TS]

00:32:07   you anything about his birth of course [TS]

00:32:08   is that it is the shortest day of the [TS]

00:32:11   year and then the day start getting [TS]

00:32:14   longer like he is born and also the the [TS]

00:32:17   year is born we are like born again in [TS]

00:32:19   the Sun Sun is back coming slowly [TS]

00:32:23   that's a good point it's a baby son on [TS]

00:32:25   december twenty fifth and then the Sun [TS]

00:32:28   is going to grow to become the adult son [TS]

00:32:30   of summer so it's all very like it's all [TS]

00:32:34   very tree forests chapel people [TS]

00:32:38   it's very tree people for jobs people [TS]

00:32:41   but i love this guy it's and and then of [TS]

00:32:45   course in spring that's when you really [TS]

00:32:47   want to [TS]

00:32:47   that's when you want to die die a [TS]

00:32:49   gruesome and disfiguring death in the [TS]

00:32:52   Sun and then then be reborn three days [TS]

00:32:55   later [TS]

00:32:56   yeah i mean that's just it's i don't [TS]

00:32:58   even have to explain what that's a [TS]

00:33:00   metaphor [TS]

00:33:00   okay how about this tell me if you're on [TS]

00:33:02   board with this part to you think about [TS]

00:33:04   sitting around in that darkroom like you [TS]

00:33:07   know feeling like an idiot going like [TS]

00:33:09   wherewhere is there i'm opening my I'm [TS]

00:33:11   opening myself up to the idea that [TS]

00:33:13   there's this bigger thing that I should [TS]

00:33:14   be a better person and you open up and [TS]

00:33:15   there's all that stuff I think a huge [TS]

00:33:17   part of Christmas is feeling like shit i [TS]

00:33:19   think i think what we must accept and [TS]

00:33:22   not just purely from strictly from like [TS]

00:33:24   a aid if you like same mental health [TS]

00:33:27   standpoint but i think we also need to [TS]

00:33:29   realize there's something inherently [TS]

00:33:30   extremely sad about Christmas there's [TS]

00:33:33   something very there's so much nostalgia [TS]

00:33:35   that people would you think about who's [TS]

00:33:37   dead and not there anymore i think [TS]

00:33:38   that's that's what people don't [TS]

00:33:39   acknowledge that's what's ironic to me [TS]

00:33:41   in some ways it's like okay well you [TS]

00:33:42   know believe what you want to believe if [TS]

00:33:44   you want to go get deals on amazon deals [TS]

00:33:46   on amazon whatever black friday whatever [TS]

00:33:48   it is you want to do like investor thing [TS]

00:33:49   let that be your thing christmas lights [TS]

00:33:51   whatever that is but also let's [TS]

00:33:52   acknowledge that it's a very depressing [TS]

00:33:54   time of year for a lot of people [TS]

00:33:56   yeah and and I think that's what gets [TS]

00:33:57   lost to me that's the healthy part is [TS]

00:33:59   not that I can't get my get my college [TS]

00:34:01   educated brain around the idea of you [TS]

00:34:04   know the the the wizard in the sky [TS]

00:34:06   sending his son down to save us then die [TS]

00:34:08   it's it's much more like I think it's a [TS]

00:34:10   bummer that we don't acknowledge hell [TS]

00:34:13   morose and well yes mawkish but also [TS]

00:34:18   just just depressing Christmases it's [TS]

00:34:21   really depressing you'll never do it [TS]

00:34:22   right [TS]

00:34:23   your kid my kid will never be happy [TS]

00:34:24   enough at what we bought her as a gift [TS]

00:34:27   she'll never be into these things as [TS]

00:34:29   much as would make me happy i would love [TS]

00:34:30   for more of my family who's dead to be [TS]

00:34:32   around to see this and I think that's [TS]

00:34:33   what people don't aren't comfortable [TS]

00:34:35   acknowledging they feel like they should [TS]

00:34:36   be all up and Pepe and wearing a silly [TS]

00:34:39   sweater and feeling great all the time [TS]

00:34:40   when I think most of us are stressed out [TS]

00:34:42   and freaky and depressed a lot of the [TS]

00:34:45   time I mean I'm not a depressive person [TS]

00:34:47   but it does make me very [TS]

00:34:49   it's not solemn what's the word [TS]

00:34:51   reflective about like what I've lost in [TS]

00:34:53   life following melancholy yeah like the [TS]

00:34:56   kind of reflect on what I've lost and [TS]

00:34:58   we'll never get back Merry Christmas [TS]

00:34:59   that's what I think about and i think i [TS]

00:35:01   think most people are uncomfortable [TS]

00:35:02   admitting that because I feel like [TS]

00:35:04   they're being a holiday karma sock I i [TS]

00:35:07   think that one of the one of the themes [TS]

00:35:09   though the running themes in my life had [TS]

00:35:13   I got a car here is that what a growing [TS]

00:35:19   up in Alaska there is always a there's [TS]

00:35:22   always somebody who is more of an [TS]

00:35:25   outdoorsman then you write and a greater [TS]

00:35:30   Yeti theory there is there there is [TS]

00:35:32   always somebody who is like who has [TS]

00:35:35   slept outside more nights and that is a [TS]

00:35:40   that is a a hierarchy that goes all the [TS]

00:35:43   way up to the literal Grizzly Adams 'as [TS]

00:35:47   who make a living [TS]

00:35:49   trapping animals in the winter with [TS]

00:35:52   homemade snares and so all you have to [TS]

00:35:57   do is spend one night outside in the [TS]

00:36:00   dead of winter in Alaska to realize that [TS]

00:36:02   you that that living in the city living [TS]

00:36:06   in your house you are not living the [TS]

00:36:09   same life at all as someone who is [TS]

00:36:13   living on the on the ragged edge of [TS]

00:36:17   survival [TS]

00:36:18   oh yeah and although although you prefer [TS]

00:36:24   the comfort the fact is that in those [TS]

00:36:27   moments when you are outside at night in [TS]

00:36:30   the wilderness in the winter there is a [TS]

00:36:33   solemnity to life that that we do that [TS]

00:36:38   we take great pains to eliminate you [TS]

00:36:41   know we build we build houses we heat [TS]

00:36:45   them from inside we keep we leave the [TS]

00:36:46   lights on all night and all of that is [TS]

00:36:48   to banish this this thing that we've [TS]

00:36:52   talked about you and I many many times [TS]

00:36:54   this feeling that the that the stars are [TS]

00:36:57   ambivalent to you the feeling that [TS]

00:36:58   you're going to fall off the earth [TS]

00:37:00   the feeling that you know and and it [TS]

00:37:03   isn't just it isn't just a feeling of [TS]

00:37:06   profound aloneness it is like the it is [TS]

00:37:09   the core feeling of profundity at its [TS]

00:37:13   heart you know and these guys who are [TS]

00:37:16   living out in the wilderness they are in [TS]

00:37:19   touch with the the immensity and the the [TS]

00:37:27   immensity of creation but also the [TS]

00:37:29   enormity of it and being exposed to it [TS]

00:37:34   as much as I have which is not that much [TS]

00:37:37   being a you know an Alaskan and sort of [TS]

00:37:40   like dragged out into the wilderness and [TS]

00:37:43   then left standing rooted in spot [TS]

00:37:47   looking up at the Milky Way and feeling [TS]

00:37:48   like oh fuck like not only is the Milky [TS]

00:37:51   Way there but it's also 40 below zero [TS]

00:37:53   and right though and the woods are full [TS]

00:37:58   of predators and uh and my friends have [TS]

00:38:04   left me like I am I am so out of the out [TS]

00:38:09   of the realm of like black friday right [TS]

00:38:11   now and into a very different kind of [TS]

00:38:14   black friday a black ass and so so [TS]

00:38:18   that's and laminated he is a thing that [TS]

00:38:21   I want to impart not just too much to [TS]

00:38:24   people who are close to me but i want to [TS]

00:38:26   share that with everybody I meet because [TS]

00:38:28   I feel like most of us who live in the [TS]

00:38:32   live in the present world are all are [TS]

00:38:35   almost completely divorced from it and a [TS]

00:38:38   lot of people have never experienced it [TS]

00:38:40   or or they have experienced it in the it [TS]

00:38:44   that one time somebody drove the car up [TS]

00:38:46   a dirt road and turn the lights off and [TS]

00:38:49   they all got out of the car looked at [TS]

00:38:50   the stars for a minute it's kind of [TS]

00:38:51   bleakness tourism the right or or you're [TS]

00:38:54   just like Oh fine and and it's it's even [TS]

00:38:57   more scary and awesome because you have [TS]

00:38:59   no context for it and then you're like [TS]

00:39:01   get back in the car turn the heater on [TS]

00:39:03   and turn the fucking radio on and get me [TS]

00:39:06   back to the work to the the world that I [TS]

00:39:09   understand which is one with a roof on [TS]

00:39:11   it [TS]

00:39:11   and so that's that celebrity whatever [TS]

00:39:15   that is that connection with that [TS]

00:39:17   feeling of smallness and the feeling of [TS]

00:39:20   like the yawn in truth that we live on a [TS]

00:39:26   ball and we don't know why and and to [TS]

00:39:33   not think about that every day is is [TS]

00:39:36   just a factor of having drowned that out [TS]

00:39:40   with a lot of high pitch noise you know [TS]

00:39:43   that that 200 years ago we would have [TS]

00:39:47   been confronted with it every day [TS]

00:39:50   because we would have been out plowing [TS]

00:39:53   at or if we wanted to go somewhere after [TS]

00:39:56   dark we would there you know you can [TS]

00:39:58   hear the wolves at the edge of town and [TS]

00:40:01   now we have grounded out but we've [TS]

00:40:03   grounded out almost entirely with static [TS]

00:40:05   and 22 miss it to miss out on it is to [TS]

00:40:12   miss out on that the thing about [TS]

00:40:16   something very very core about something [TS]

00:40:18   as real as as can be that maybe isn't [TS]

00:40:25   even there in the summer or is there in [TS]

00:40:28   a different way in the summer since this [TS]

00:40:30   is definitely much harder to get access [TS]

00:40:32   to and and in winter you can leave your [TS]

00:40:36   you can leave your like we have a [TS]

00:40:38   solution of screens and our windows in [TS]

00:40:40   San Francisco you just open up your [TS]

00:40:41   windows you know whenever you feel like [TS]

00:40:43   it and stuff can come in but that sense [TS]

00:40:45   of like it mean in a way to use that [TS]

00:40:48   word again you're talking about a kind [TS]

00:40:49   of abstraction where we get more and [TS]

00:40:51   more layers of comfort and security that [TS]

00:40:54   can make us that on the one hand make us [TS]

00:40:57   feel safe and secure and warm and all [TS]

00:41:00   those things but also are meant to make [TS]

00:41:03   us feel like we'll never have that [TS]

00:41:04   probation and will never and [TS]

00:41:06   consequently i think that's kind of what [TS]

00:41:08   you're saying that we'll never have to [TS]

00:41:10   confront that existential void will let [TS]

00:41:14   alone the fact that you know it's like [TS]

00:41:16   the difference between you know [TS]

00:41:17   sprinting kind of like playing around in [TS]

00:41:19   a little tidal pool versus understanding [TS]

00:41:21   like what a wave can do to you [TS]

00:41:24   like that's like that you know the kind [TS]

00:41:26   of like that's the cold is like water in [TS]

00:41:28   that sense it's like you don't realize [TS]

00:41:30   like how incredibly harsh the world is [TS]

00:41:33   natively how harsh our existence [TS]

00:41:35   ultimately is and so you know if you get [TS]

00:41:38   enough christmas sweaters eventually you [TS]

00:41:40   won't have to think about it want to [TS]

00:41:41   imagine all the the people that we know [TS]

00:41:43   who our astronomy buff space nerds who [TS]

00:41:47   interact with space primarily by looking [TS]

00:41:53   at hubbell photos on the internet or you [TS]

00:41:58   know a at and how although those Hubble [TS]

00:42:01   photos and space photos and episode of [TS]

00:42:05   cosmos are all extraordinary the [TS]

00:42:10   difference between looking at the most [TS]

00:42:13   detailed photos you know color-enhanced [TS]

00:42:15   photograph of distant nebula is compared [TS]

00:42:20   to standing out on a cold night and [TS]

00:42:22   peering into a telescope at a blurry [TS]

00:42:25   picture of satire blurry view of Saturn [TS]

00:42:29   which is in some ways like pales in [TS]

00:42:35   comparison but on the other hand if [TS]

00:42:37   you've ever done if you've ever stood [TS]

00:42:38   out in the cold shivering looking at [TS]

00:42:41   Saturn through a telescope you know that [TS]

00:42:43   it is in a way infinitely more profound [TS]

00:42:46   than looking at these pictures of deep [TS]

00:42:50   space in on a computer because you [TS]

00:42:52   you're actually conscious of the [TS]

00:42:54   distance and your conscious of the goal [TS]

00:42:57   of the void and of the fact that it's [TS]

00:43:00   real it's not a special effect it's not [TS]

00:43:02   a game i can't look up into the night [TS]

00:43:08   sky without feeling [TS]

00:43:12   terror i guess and it's not a it's not a [TS]

00:43:16   terror that's uncomfortable it's like a [TS]

00:43:18   it's like a terror in it in a Greek [TS]

00:43:22   sense of like why do we not all feel [TS]

00:43:27   terror all the time why why shouldn't we [TS]

00:43:33   we should be terrified we live on a [TS]

00:43:35   freaking ball and that should be a lot [TS]

00:43:39   scarier [TS]

00:43:40   I feel like and I feel like it was scary [TS]

00:43:44   it was very scary until very recently [TS]

00:43:48   well you you've got in in describing [TS]

00:43:50   that you've got a lot of the core [TS]

00:43:53   realization that people get in a [TS]

00:43:56   religious setting without the supernal [TS]

00:43:59   influence [TS]

00:43:59   yeah you got that sense of immensity the [TS]

00:44:02   the god that's bigger than god there's [TS]

00:44:04   something that we can't get a name for [TS]

00:44:06   this bigger than you know that's be able [TS]

00:44:08   Cartesian but something that's bigger if [TS]

00:44:11   it's if we can imagine it that's not the [TS]

00:44:13   thing it's something bigger than that [TS]

00:44:15   it's something that has so much in [TS]

00:44:17   Normandy and and if you don't feel small [TS]

00:44:19   you're not thinking hard enough so and [TS]

00:44:22   it's one of the reasons that I couldn't [TS]

00:44:24   it's one of the reasons that when I when [TS]

00:44:26   I think to myself I should have been a [TS]

00:44:28   physicist it was the thing that I wanted [TS]

00:44:30   to do and what what stopped me was that [TS]

00:44:37   in such in such quick succession it was [TS]

00:44:41   so easy to get myself into a place where [TS]

00:44:43   i was asking questions that couldn't be [TS]

00:44:45   answered and that i had to content [TS]

00:44:49   myself with discovering answers to [TS]

00:44:53   questions that were further up the food [TS]

00:44:54   chain like and I couldn't I couldn't be [TS]

00:45:00   content seeking seeking something small [TS]

00:45:05   flagstones I'm [TS]

00:45:11   but that's really where I you know [TS]

00:45:14   really where I would I would want to be [TS]

00:45:16   and it's it's so sad it's so sad to know [TS]

00:45:20   that we won't know that we cannot know [TS]

00:45:24   yeah it's such a mean that the [TS]

00:45:28   melancholy in feeling like there are [TS]

00:45:32   that we just can't know even the next [TS]

00:45:36   scale up right now yeah totally [TS]

00:45:39   the and the more the more you know the [TS]

00:45:42   more you realize you can't know it's yes [TS]

00:45:43   what back serious musicians basics like [TS]

00:45:46   religion for atheists in some ways yeah [TS]

00:45:49   right but the I don't know I feel I feel [TS]

00:45:54   I feel like maybe I should just turn on [TS]

00:45:56   my mp3 player and see if the kings of [TS]

00:45:59   leon have a new track i thought they had [TS]

00:46:02   long hair i'm really confused they might [TS]

00:46:05   have strictly might have cutting saw [TS]

00:46:06   them on the internet live and I think [TS]

00:46:08   they must have I think they must have [TS]

00:46:10   lost their hair at JFK or something they [TS]

00:46:12   they they were very short [TS]

00:46:13   I you know I had longer a couple years [TS]

00:46:15   ago and then I I cut it because it [TS]

00:46:17   seemed like the only thing i was i'm [TS]

00:46:19   supposed to do that day huh [TS]

00:46:21   like how was I supposed to do alright [TS]

00:46:23   cut off this hair and now I feel like oh [TS]

00:46:27   what a dummy i would have I could have [TS]

00:46:30   four feet of hair right now year long [TS]

00:46:33   hair with all due respect to to a man [TS]

00:46:36   that I really respect just sartorially [TS]

00:46:38   really in every way it was creepy your [TS]

00:46:40   hair creepy creepy creepy is creepy the [TS]

00:46:43   word you want to use I crazier like cool [TS]

00:46:49   features like you were you looking for [TS]

00:46:52   yeah yeah probably cool that's probably [TS]

00:46:54   you know 61 creepier the other three [TS]

00:46:57   people on me creepy and well it was the [TS]

00:47:00   two thoughts John yeah okay the missing [TS]

00:47:02   tooth is creating you know it'sit's you [TS]

00:47:04   know if you got the baking soda and you [TS]

00:47:07   got the vinegar and as long as you keep [TS]

00:47:09   them apart you don't have a volcano but [TS]

00:47:10   you man that combination that picture of [TS]

00:47:13   you with with my daughter is still one [TS]

00:47:14   of my favorite things because in any [TS]

00:47:16   kind of part in the middle in a real [TS]

00:47:18   real Jesus kind of way to up [TS]

00:47:21   you get a lot of hair you you end up it [TS]

00:47:23   parts itself in the middle that's the [TS]

00:47:25   thing it is that right yeah because of [TS]

00:47:28   the weight [TS]

00:47:29   yeah you can you can try and like [TS]

00:47:31   partied different places but eventually [TS]

00:47:32   it's gonna just it's gonna it's gonna [TS]

00:47:35   fall into that Roseanne Roseannadanna [TS]

00:47:37   huh [TS]

00:47:38   oh I you know I've been five been [TS]

00:47:41   playing at having slightly longer hair [TS]

00:47:43   and its really not working out [TS]

00:47:45   really yeah i mean it just does not look [TS]

00:47:47   good on a man my age and I'm long hair [TS]

00:47:49   not long hair but i couldn't i don't [TS]

00:47:51   think i could get too long here I just I [TS]

00:47:53   couldn't take it [TS]

00:47:54   I'm not kissing your ass when I say that [TS]

00:47:55   I have never seen you with a hairstyle [TS]

00:47:59   or a or a version of like scruffy scruff [TS]

00:48:03   that I didn't think was cool [TS]

00:48:06   oh God thank you John that means the [TS]

00:48:08   world to me i I'm my hair is atrocious [TS]

00:48:10   right now [TS]

00:48:11   sometimes your hair is short sometimes [TS]

00:48:12   it's long sometimes it's must be [TS]

00:48:14   sometimes it's much easier I guess we [TS]

00:48:16   talking like a serious communication [TS]

00:48:18   problems with my operator and i've got i [TS]

00:48:21   needed i need to look I hate to say it I [TS]

00:48:24   i have to go take a look at some other [TS]

00:48:25   options your your opera you mean the man [TS]

00:48:27   who sits in a little chair and drives [TS]

00:48:29   the Merlin from inside I can talk about [TS]

00:48:32   Doctor Who your other side now though [TS]

00:48:35   the the lady who who cuts my hair [TS]

00:48:37   oh and that's $12 haircut and believe me [TS]

00:48:41   before she does not owe me a nickel it's [TS]

00:48:44   anyway it's I should do something about [TS]

00:48:46   it [TS]

00:48:47   let's see this is the beauty of you you [TS]

00:48:49   know being a professional entertainer is [TS]

00:48:51   you can do things like that and it'll be [TS]

00:48:52   entertaining to people if you get along [TS]

00:48:53   here [TS]

00:48:54   yeah yeah well and the thing about long [TS]

00:48:57   hair on a man my size is it instantly [TS]

00:49:02   conjures arrest Putin like severity I [TS]

00:49:07   think that's your personality [TS]

00:49:08   oh really no I mean on a bad way but [TS]

00:49:11   you're here be right [TS]

00:49:13   no no I mean I think it's very [TS]

00:49:15   flattering i think you have a very [TS]

00:49:17   intimidating presence to begin with but [TS]

00:49:20   when you have a deliberately missing [TS]

00:49:22   tooth you know and like shoulder-length [TS]

00:49:24   hair [TS]

00:49:26   yeah yeah i think people start really [TS]

00:49:28   imagine themselves in a garbage bag you [TS]

00:49:30   know when they see that coming [TS]

00:49:32   yeah although I wouldn't waste a garbage [TS]

00:49:34   bag on most people know right yeah I [TS]

00:49:37   feel like what the garbage bag is just [TS]

00:49:39   something that the raccoons are going to [TS]

00:49:41   have to tear through it might as well [TS]

00:49:43   just save everybody the pollution and [TS]

00:49:47   just just put the body in a river [TS]

00:49:50   oh that's what Mesa environmental recipe [TS]

00:49:53   eaten up [TS]

00:49:54   yeah i-i've been thinking a lot about [TS]

00:49:57   the life of an entertainer lately [TS]

00:49:59   because unfortunately or rather [TS]

00:50:04   fortunately I have a lot of big plans [TS]

00:50:06   now I'm feeling better and I'm feeling [TS]

00:50:08   like like engaging but as you know [TS]

00:50:12   feeling like engaging and engaging em [TS]

00:50:16   are uh are different and engaging even [TS]

00:50:20   engagement is a process that it's a it's [TS]

00:50:24   an everyday process i wake up yesterday [TS]

00:50:27   and I engage and then I wake up today [TS]

00:50:31   and I forget to you nothing quite as [TS]

00:50:33   engag and then it's like oh fuck i have [TS]

00:50:36   to do this every day I talking about [TS]

00:50:38   like like like pulling your you like one [TS]

00:50:40   reason our listeners mean I know we [TS]

00:50:41   haven't had a recording a while is [TS]

00:50:43   partly because you've been even [TS]

00:50:45   traveling a lot [TS]

00:50:46   I've been working well yeah we're [TS]

00:50:48   traveling for traveling for like you're [TS]

00:50:50   always working in some way John Thank [TS]

00:50:52   You Merlin I think you're out there [TS]

00:50:53   playing on the field even if there's no [TS]

00:50:54   crop really well with what the show up [TS]

00:50:57   every day right idea of shots i shall [TS]

00:51:00   show up one of the things our listeners [TS]

00:51:02   should be made aware of is that you and [TS]

00:51:04   I are going to do a live version of [TS]

00:51:06   rather come let me take a minute a [TS]

00:51:08   little bit by the sponsor today haha [TS]

00:51:11   yeah we're gonna do that now [TS]

00:51:12   di Denton Cisco's sketchfest hm we are [TS]

00:51:16   going to be underpaid and over used at [TS]

00:51:19   sketchfest well that's just the nature [TS]

00:51:21   of the festival of all festivals until [TS]

00:51:26   you reach a certain point where you are [TS]

00:51:28   overpaid and under you as my carne [TS]

00:51:30   carnies really just do it for the love [TS]

00:51:31   of the craft that's why they think well [TS]

00:51:33   they loved the game didn't you have [TS]

00:51:35   those I mean I this is more [TS]

00:51:38   kind of breaking the 56 wall here but [TS]

00:51:40   when is that should tell people about [TS]

00:51:42   though it's at the end of january so [TS]

00:51:43   we're doing two shows the 30th and 31st [TS]

00:51:45   in San Francisco live but it has it is [TS]

00:51:49   the idea of of agreeing to do those [TS]

00:51:52   shows has in me ignited a feeling that [TS]

00:51:57   you know and I in you and I have talked [TS]

00:51:59   about it a feeling that we should we [TS]

00:52:01   should start to think about live [TS]

00:52:05   performance as one of the things that we [TS]

00:52:06   do [TS]

00:52:07   yeah which is we should we should do the [TS]

00:52:08   show we should just show live in [TS]

00:52:10   different locations like a crazy night i [TS]

00:52:13   agree i agree i I'd like to pre-announce [TS]

00:52:16   but i think that's a very good idea i [TS]

00:52:17   think this is a great way to kick-off RR [TS]

00:52:20   jubilee year 2014 it's going to be here [TS]

00:52:22   but this has this has been suggested to [TS]

00:52:25   me that i should do a regular show [TS]

00:52:28   because because playing these long [TS]

00:52:31   winters reunion shows has reminded me [TS]

00:52:33   that I am an electric guitar player and [TS]

00:52:36   for the last few years i've been getting [TS]

00:52:39   by [TS]

00:52:40   strumming my acoustic guitar and singing [TS]

00:52:42   which is the thing I enjoy but i am an [TS]

00:52:45   electric guitar player especially when [TS]

00:52:47   you say it that way I play the electric [TS]

00:52:49   guitar do you play the guitar [TS]

00:52:50   electrically is what you do likely shit [TS]

00:52:53   out of the LA yes and the thing about [TS]

00:52:56   having a rock band is it's very [TS]

00:52:58   expensive to to house and feed all these [TS]

00:53:01   people [TS]

00:53:03   bunya and yet you have to keep you have [TS]

00:53:06   to feed them you have to give them a [TS]

00:53:07   place to sleep you get it they have to [TS]

00:53:09   have their medicine after their medicine [TS]

00:53:10   you have to talk nicely to them at a [TS]

00:53:12   certain point every day to remind them [TS]

00:53:15   that you like them and care about them [TS]

00:53:16   and have to live with the constant [TS]

00:53:20   expectation of apologies [TS]

00:53:22   yeah you have to then sometimes somebody [TS]

00:53:24   asked to go to the bathroom and [TS]

00:53:26   everybody else doesn't have to go to the [TS]

00:53:27   bathroom but we're going to tell me [TS]

00:53:28   can't go to the bathroom [TS]

00:53:30   no you have to pull over but all of that [TS]

00:53:33   is necessary if you want to play the [TS]

00:53:35   shit out of the electric guitar in front [TS]

00:53:37   of people because nobody wants to see [TS]

00:53:38   you do that in front of a drum machine [TS]

00:53:41   anyway so i'm trying to think of like [TS]

00:53:44   okay here here we are it's brand new [TS]

00:53:47   year we're starting a new year this is [TS]

00:53:48   gonna be do believe year want to start [TS]

00:53:51   getting out there want to start [TS]

00:53:52   performing and uh and then that just [TS]

00:53:57   brings the whole it's just the whole [TS]

00:53:58   glacier of performance starts calving [TS]

00:54:03   off into the Bristol Bay of my all we [TS]

00:54:07   had a little moment there [TS]

00:54:18   wow where's my orange bell somebody [TS]

00:54:21   stole my orange bell she could traveling [TS]

00:54:24   and working has been in my house [TS]

00:54:26   um but you know if you do it enough and [TS]

00:54:30   you get paid for it is it's like a job [TS]

00:54:32   that the pain in the ass part is we're [TS]

00:54:33   in my experience the pain in the ass [TS]

00:54:35   part is like having to go somewhere for [TS]

00:54:36   like a day [TS]

00:54:37   yeah well I see I'm trying to I'm trying [TS]

00:54:40   to I'm trying to for this is the hard [TS]

00:54:43   part trying to lower my expectations [TS]

00:54:45   about money and return to a time when [TS]

00:54:51   what I believed in was art and I [TS]

00:54:56   remember many many long long passionate [TS]

00:54:59   conversations with people in cafes / [TS]

00:55:02   export a over pack of export a [TS]

00:55:05   cigarettes and forty cups of coffee [TS]

00:55:07   where we were talking about art and we [TS]

00:55:11   meant it [TS]

00:55:12   it was serious business and somewhere [TS]

00:55:17   along the line there [TS]

00:55:19   the word art got quotation marks around [TS]

00:55:20   it because it was unseemly to talk about [TS]

00:55:26   art if you were in the pop vernacular [TS]

00:55:30   and then quotation marks got put around [TS]

00:55:33   everything for many years they're cooked [TS]

00:55:38   a trick and and now i'm trying to clear [TS]

00:55:42   away this like snow storm of quotation [TS]

00:55:46   marks and find whatever is there and [TS]

00:55:52   whatever is behind this is blizzard and [TS]

00:55:58   I want to you know like I want to care [TS]

00:56:00   about I want to care about art and [TS]

00:56:03   entertainment and figure once again as i [TS]

00:56:08   used to figure that that that that not [TS]

00:56:11   only will the money follow but even [TS]

00:56:13   appreciation will follow people don't [TS]

00:56:15   appreciate it at first some people do [TS]

00:56:18   well I i think i actually reality so so [TS]

00:56:23   you're not going to get you know can be [TS]

00:56:24   like Santana just showing up and doing [TS]

00:56:26   solos for your electric guitar playing [TS]

00:56:29   what what's your what's your plan for [TS]

00:56:31   doing a regular show is like what I was [TS]

00:56:33   like what the guy that plays all the [TS]

00:56:34   cattle are go that kind of thing you're [TS]

00:56:37   going to do a good job Brian thing is [TS]

00:56:38   that what you do is you host with your [TS]

00:56:40   host an event school that's I don't [TS]

00:56:43   think that doesn't have these huge doing [TS]

00:56:45   Allentown and we're a little and John [TS]

00:56:51   bryantown harmoniously where [TS]

00:56:58   I that this is the thing I don't know [TS]

00:57:02   that so there's a venue here in Seattle [TS]

00:57:04   called the rendezvous which is a very [TS]

00:57:07   small room it's probably it's it was [TS]

00:57:10   built originally as a screening room [TS]

00:57:12   because Seattle was a town where [TS]

00:57:15   Hollywood movies in the twenties and [TS]

00:57:18   thirties they would screen those movies [TS]

00:57:20   here in Seattle before they went into [TS]

00:57:21   wide release and so Seattle had a whole [TS]

00:57:25   little constellation of tiny theaters [TS]

00:57:30   clover built just to show Errol Flynn [TS]

00:57:33   movies to a select crowd and judging on [TS]

00:57:39   there you know based on their reaction [TS]

00:57:40   then they would it do another editor [TS]

00:57:42   whatever so they're always like a light [TS]

00:57:44   on that test really like beta testers [TS]

00:57:45   for airflow movies right and so they're [TS]

00:57:48   there used to be a whole slew of these [TS]

00:57:51   little like 5280 capacity theaters that [TS]

00:57:56   were done in high egyptian-style and [TS]

00:57:59   most of them are gone but the this one [TS]

00:58:01   remains called the jewel box theater at [TS]

00:58:03   the rendezvous it's a tiny little [TS]

00:58:05   roommates where my music career got [TS]

00:58:07   started we you know my first shows were [TS]

00:58:09   all in this room because the way you [TS]

00:58:12   would book it is you would walk into the [TS]

00:58:14   bar and there'd be like four sailors and [TS]

00:58:18   like to 60-year old floozies also you [TS]

00:58:22   know sitting at the bar one guy would be [TS]

00:58:24   smoking because at the time wait saw it [TS]

00:58:26   was absolutely topics bond and you would [TS]

00:58:29   walk in and there was a book on a on a [TS]

00:58:33   lectern and you would flip the book to [TS]

00:58:36   likes an open date and you just write [TS]

00:58:37   your name on and that was how you book [TS]

00:58:39   to show in this bar like we're playing [TS]

00:58:41   here on Tuesday and play like the [TS]

00:58:44   bartender wouldn't even not at you they [TS]

00:58:45   just and then you would show up you [TS]

00:58:49   would have to collect the money you have [TS]

00:58:51   to have somebody to stand at the door [TS]

00:58:53   collecting money and then you play the [TS]

00:58:55   show and then you the bar didn't they [TS]

00:58:58   didn't ask for a cut or whatever they [TS]

00:59:00   just figured that all of the all of the [TS]

00:59:02   the gimlets they were serving what was [TS]

00:59:07   more than enough pay and [TS]

00:59:08   is that really something from another [TS]

00:59:09   century it was a great it was a great [TS]

00:59:11   deal and a wonderful thing for the town [TS]

00:59:14   and I think even now they fixed up the [TS]

00:59:16   jewel box a little bit but I think even [TS]

00:59:17   now it's not that hard to just walk in [TS]

00:59:20   and say like I'm playing here but I've [TS]

00:59:23   been thinking I should do a show there [TS]

00:59:25   once a week but I don't know what it [TS]

00:59:29   would be Merlin I honestly don't know [TS]

00:59:30   what kind of show to do should i should [TS]

00:59:36   i rant for an hour and then first I ran [TS]

00:59:39   for 15 minutes and then play the [TS]

00:59:40   electric guitar for an hour which is the [TS]

00:59:43   ledges regroup should i should i should [TS]

00:59:46   i ran for 20 minutes play for 20 minutes [TS]

00:59:49   ran for 20 more minutes i think this is [TS]

00:59:50   not complicated i can cut at some point [TS]

00:59:53   John i would like to have a role in life [TS]

00:59:54   showing you that things are not as [TS]

00:59:55   complicated as they sink [TS]

00:59:57   yeah I think you should go into a show [TS]

00:59:58   and see how it goes and then try [TS]

00:59:59   different [TS]

00:59:59   different [TS]

01:00:00   if that didn't work but a real real real [TS]

01:00:02   easy one would be just going to do a [TS]

01:00:04   show and see how it goes [TS]

01:00:05   I told you off the record will cut this [TS]

01:00:07   out not really is that I would be fine [TS]

01:00:08   for us to alternate between our two [TS]

01:00:11   cities every month San Francisco and [TS]

01:00:12   Seattle yeah actually at a similar-sized [TS]

01:00:16   together I think it's because doing that [TS]

01:00:17   just sighed a sigh of like seven tonight [TS]

01:00:22   I don't like to announce things but [TS]

01:00:24   nobody but in your case I mean this is [TS]

01:00:26   part of your art where you're not going [TS]

01:00:27   to put quotation marks around it right [TS]

01:00:29   now is that you just just go and do it [TS]

01:00:32   just going to see what happens i mean [TS]

01:00:33   you you can do some storytelling you can [TS]

01:00:35   do some songs stuff you know it's a part [TS]

01:00:37   of it is it like there's such a in my [TS]

01:00:41   head anyway and i suspect him in a lot [TS]

01:00:43   of people of a similar age it's your [TS]

01:00:45   idea of like what a rock and roll show [TS]

01:00:46   is which is it's a place where you go [TS]

01:00:48   and like 225 bands play it starts late [TS]

01:00:52   it's really loud it's rock and roll show [TS]

01:00:54   and the thing is it doesn't need to be [TS]

01:00:56   just that or it doesn't need to be some [TS]

01:00:58   kind of ironic bow tie event like there [TS]

01:01:00   could be something in between and that [TS]

01:01:03   you know it gets its own definition [TS]

01:01:05   based on who's doing the show and who [TS]

01:01:07   starts coming to it a lot [TS]

01:01:08   that's you know what I mean it's just [TS]

01:01:10   there's i think if you if the [TS]

01:01:12   expectations are that low there is known [TS]

01:01:13   which is good [TS]

01:01:15   the expectation should be low there [TS]

01:01:16   shouldn't be any any thought that it's [TS]

01:01:17   going to be you know sword swallowers [TS]

01:01:20   and shit but like you know you can you [TS]

01:01:22   could go and do some new songs do some [TS]

01:01:25   storytelling have a guest you could you [TS]

01:01:26   could interview someone you there are [TS]

01:01:28   various things that you can do it could [TS]

01:01:29   be John rock show [TS]

01:01:31   yeah i was thinking about calling it [TS]

01:01:33   John Rodricks rendezvous is it [TS]

01:01:38   rendezvous Rondo's moods [TS]

01:01:40   ok because you keep announcing it [TS]

01:01:42   rendezvous and I like the idea that that [TS]

01:01:43   it's like an old whore named him named [TS]

01:01:45   Rhonda rendezvous individual yeah [TS]

01:01:48   exactly it's all rendezvous no [TS]

01:01:52   rendezvous [TS]

01:01:54   well I i feel like the word rendezvous [TS]

01:01:57   is a is a is a word with a great it has [TS]

01:02:02   a great pedigree in Alaska because we [TS]

01:02:04   have the fur around whom every winter [TS]

01:02:07   where all the fur trappers come to town [TS]

01:02:09   and well they used to come to town and [TS]

01:02:12   sell their first [TS]

01:02:13   sounds like a dragon that it actually [TS]

01:02:17   there is a great component have to come [TS]

01:02:19   to the fur on de foot there's a think [TS]

01:02:21   that you have a thing called the miners [TS]

01:02:24   and trappers ball which is I swear to [TS]

01:02:29   you that absolute highlight of the [TS]

01:02:32   Alaska social year they bring their [TS]

01:02:35   homemade snares well if you can get a [TS]

01:02:37   ticket to the minor and trappers ball [TS]

01:02:39   now i'll put in with you it's like a [TS]

01:02:40   heavy ticket you can't get good it right [TS]

01:02:43   now I'm that the miners trapped these [TS]

01:02:45   like serious like guys that they look [TS]

01:02:48   like [TS]

01:02:48   Nanook of the north or they're wearing [TS]

01:02:49   the filson jackets like this is hardcore [TS]

01:02:51   stuff [TS]

01:02:51   well but it's become a socialite event [TS]

01:02:53   like all of the all about heavy hitters [TS]

01:02:57   up there all go in there big wolf [TS]

01:03:00   jackets like you're supposed to wear [TS]

01:03:04   your your full on Alaska finery but [TS]

01:03:07   they're all in tuxedos there just in [TS]

01:03:09   friend forever [TS]

01:03:10   that's the wolf text accepted as a wolf [TS]

01:03:12   tux but uh but the other it's a big deal [TS]

01:03:15   up there and but for rendezvous has [TS]

01:03:19   become a huge festival in Alaska they [TS]

01:03:22   have they build up I ice castle they [TS]

01:03:26   used to they used to have this amazing [TS]

01:03:28   thing which was they would build they [TS]

01:03:30   would build big snow berms in the [TS]

01:03:32   streets downtown and they would have [TS]

01:03:34   vintage car races on ice through the [TS]

01:03:39   center of town and the way they kept the [TS]

01:03:42   cars from crashing into buildings they [TS]

01:03:44   just built snow berms up the side of the [TS]

01:03:46   buildings start full it was really it [TS]

01:03:48   was pretty amazing i don't know what [TS]

01:03:49   they do that anymore about john de vous [TS]

01:03:51   a John David too clever by half [TS]

01:03:56   look cute yeah I feel like a little too [TS]

01:03:58   you know that might that might be a [TS]

01:04:00   something that fans say I go to the John [TS]

01:04:03   de vous [TS]

01:04:04   oh that's good yeah but i would have to [TS]

01:04:07   keep it straight [TS]

01:04:08   yeah i would have to be like John [TS]

01:04:10   Roberts round of it like that even a [TS]

01:04:11   wolf tuxedo though you know [TS]

01:04:14   oh this is so infuriating to me a really [TS]

01:04:17   good friend of mine a childhood friend [TS]

01:04:20   of mine her father had a wolf a full-on [TS]

01:04:25   like knee-length wolf jacket I i have no [TS]

01:04:30   context for what wolf looks like when [TS]

01:04:32   it's made into a wearable Pelt is it [TS]

01:04:36   like is it like a law is it looks like [TS]

01:04:39   dogs but dogs are facing dog let's talk [TS]

01:04:41   sure absolutely no offense dr. coach [TS]

01:04:44   it's a very full and in most cases kind [TS]

01:04:47   of gray white the marks for people are [TS]

01:04:50   betting it up it's a bit of much thicker [TS]

01:04:55   Pelt than a dog sure um yeah but it's a [TS]

01:04:58   dog [TS]

01:04:59   basically it's a dog coat a full-length [TS]

01:05:01   dog coat with the empty suite [TS]

01:05:03   he had a full-length will wolf code and [TS]

01:05:05   it was a vintage coat he had he bought [TS]

01:05:08   it in the seventies and I think he [TS]

01:05:09   bought it he bought it from David Green [TS]

01:05:12   master for error and it was already an [TS]

01:05:15   old coat anyway so he's got this coat [TS]

01:05:18   and I was like uh you know I had an [TS]

01:05:23   injury I am I on this code for many [TS]

01:05:25   years [TS]

01:05:26   sure who wouldn't and I talked to my [TS]

01:05:28   friend and she's like oh my dad is [TS]

01:05:29   selling his wolf coat and I said he's [TS]

01:05:32   what [TS]

01:05:33   like am I not like a son to him and so I [TS]

01:05:37   so I contacted I'm like so the wolf coat [TS]

01:05:40   like let's wrap and here's what he says [TS]

01:05:45   you couldn't afford it who's strong [TS]

01:05:48   thing and I was like I beg your pardon [TS]

01:05:52   and then he puts on ebay and he was [TS]

01:05:54   right i wish i could not have afforded [TS]

01:05:56   it was it over a thousand dollars it was [TS]

01:05:59   apparently a full-length wolf vintage [TS]

01:06:02   wolf parka is a is an item of some [TS]

01:06:07   of some prices goodness i just googled [TS]

01:06:09   it are they all this peppy they're very [TS]

01:06:12   well-seasoned so this one was on [TS]

01:06:13   Alaska's not made from a single wolf no [TS]

01:06:16   no a lot of wolves have to have to die [TS]

01:06:18   to make the coat [TS]

01:06:18   yes a lot of wolves had to be snared in [TS]

01:06:21   the snow and gradually chew on their [TS]

01:06:23   paws until they died to make a coat that [TS]

01:06:27   beautiful my goodness there's a lot of [TS]

01:06:31   wolves in this code looks like yeah and [TS]

01:06:33   there and so it's an extraordinary [TS]

01:06:34   garment it is not a thing that you're [TS]

01:06:36   gonna wear around your gonna wear it [TS]

01:06:40   when you wear the wolf code you are [TS]

01:06:42   communicating to everybody that you are [TS]

01:06:45   fucking lunatic and that seems like it'd [TS]

01:06:50   be kinda like wearing a kilt like I've [TS]

01:06:53   always thought that did to where the [TS]

01:06:54   utility belt you must primarily step 0 [TS]

01:06:57   you must be the person who enjoys [TS]

01:06:58   talking about wearing a utility which in [TS]

01:07:00   my experience hundred percent Venn [TS]

01:07:02   diagram overflow especially if you wear [TS]

01:07:04   a wolf coat you would be pretty into [TS]

01:07:05   talking about your wolf coat [TS]

01:07:07   well yeah unless unless you were also [TS]

01:07:10   like swinging a baton or whatever like [TS]

01:07:13   the wolf coat is either like come talk [TS]

01:07:15   to me about my wool coat example or [TS]

01:07:17   drill team or get the fuck out of my way [TS]

01:07:19   right now all I like a big stick [TS]

01:07:21   yeah yeah I'm talking about like like [TS]

01:07:23   you you're you're basically carrying a [TS]

01:07:25   cattle prod or whatever like a wolf code [TS]

01:07:28   is not even a thing that you would like [TS]

01:07:29   get in and out of a car wearing you just [TS]

01:07:32   show up in the wolf code nobody knows [TS]

01:07:33   how you got there when you leave at the [TS]

01:07:36   end of the night you disappeared into [TS]

01:07:37   the mist is kind of cool if you were [TS]

01:07:38   pulled along on some kind of up a [TS]

01:07:41   carriage by fearful wolves [TS]

01:07:44   oh yeah or you had some years the [TS]

01:07:46   bottoms of your shoes were like little [TS]

01:07:48   wax snowboards and you just walked out [TS]

01:07:51   and just think it sounds like it sounds [TS]

01:07:53   like a DC villain it sounds like a [TS]

01:07:55   Batman villain you know where you're [TS]

01:07:57   basically like this like a fetishist [TS]

01:07:58   right like like Batman has bat [TS]

01:08:00   everything you know I'm saying that he's [TS]

01:08:02   got ? so you can be like wolfman yeah [TS]

01:08:04   you have two wolves party like right in [TS]

01:08:07   front of the club [TS]

01:08:08   there's your shoes or snowboard here you [TS]

01:08:10   know out you're not going on a woman [TS]

01:08:12   what you got hold of the reins and I [TS]

01:08:14   just start pulling you down the street [TS]

01:08:15   and you're just use some respect [TS]

01:08:17   yeah oh my goodness and in to give a [TS]

01:08:20   sense of like what if what it really [TS]

01:08:22   finally went for I I these options hard [TS]

01:08:24   to tell so it's definitely over a [TS]

01:08:25   thousand you think it's this one this [TS]

01:08:28   one was that was a primo wolf coat and I [TS]

01:08:32   mean honestly I have to admit that I [TS]

01:08:35   would be I would be hard-pressed to [TS]

01:08:37   cabin occasion to wear it and I would be [TS]

01:08:39   a little ashamed to wear but the idea [TS]

01:08:42   that this will coat which had been in my [TS]

01:08:44   basically in my extended family would go [TS]

01:08:46   to some stranger so nice to be asked [TS]

01:08:49   yeah some person in Chicago who's left [TS]

01:08:51   I'm gonna werewolf code and musk paul [TS]

01:08:54   allen yeah some some jagoff if I was a [TS]

01:08:58   billionaire entrepreneur i would i would [TS]

01:09:00   probably have a collection of a very [TS]

01:09:03   overpriced embarrassing silly things [TS]

01:09:05   that I didn't tell anybody about I could [TS]

01:09:07   see having like a whole vault somewhere [TS]

01:09:09   just just just full of exotic animal [TS]

01:09:12   pelts [TS]

01:09:13   well you know the the I hate to say this [TS]

01:09:16   I really do [TS]

01:09:17   I'm ashamed of myself for saying this [TS]

01:09:18   right now but the mega millions lotto [TS]

01:09:23   Merlin is up to 550 million dollars [TS]

01:09:26   yeah yeah yeah and i went to the gas [TS]

01:09:29   station [TS]

01:09:30   I was driving in my car and I was like [TS]

01:09:33   the lotto is 550 was in Florida but it's [TS]

01:09:36   all its throughout the country now [TS]

01:09:38   oh you can just anywhere you can just go [TS]

01:09:39   buy one of those tickets yeah it's just [TS]

01:09:41   that most of the winners are in florida [TS]

01:09:42   well as losers because an overwhelming [TS]

01:09:45   number of people who buy lottery tickets [TS]

01:09:47   living room floor difference up but I so [TS]

01:09:50   several years ago I had a thing where [TS]

01:09:51   when when the lottery would get above [TS]

01:09:53   300 million i would say you know I don't [TS]

01:09:57   play the lottery but three let's say 300 [TS]

01:10:00   million is my thresholds where if it's [TS]

01:10:03   above 300 million i'm gonna buy a [TS]

01:10:04   lottery ticket just because that is [TS]

01:10:08   crazy money that is hilarious money and [TS]

01:10:11   to win it would just be fucking [TS]

01:10:14   hilarious like it might well be you [TS]

01:10:18   you know if somebody's somebody's gotta [TS]

01:10:19   win it right so anyway it's at 515 i'm [TS]

01:10:22   driving down the street in my car and [TS]

01:10:24   I'm like [TS]

01:10:24   that's like five times what we gave you [TS]

01:10:26   the contract isn't it it's that I is in [TS]

01:10:28   its in its unfathomable bottom money it [TS]

01:10:30   is even after even if you take the cash [TS]

01:10:33   option and after taxes you're still [TS]

01:10:37   gonna have three hundred million dollars [TS]

01:10:38   that's a lot of money so I driving [TS]

01:10:41   driving down the street and I'm like I'm [TS]

01:10:43   it's over 300 million threshold and I'm [TS]

01:10:45   just going to go buy a lottery ticket [TS]

01:10:46   i'm just gonna do it I don't I I'm [TS]

01:10:48   embarrassed and ashamed of myself alone [TS]

01:10:50   in the car but here i go and i went into [TS]

01:10:53   the gas station and the guy didn't look [TS]

01:10:55   up from his phone he knew you were there [TS]

01:10:57   she was speaking was playing angry birds [TS]

01:10:59   and i was like i want to buy a lottery [TS]

01:11:02   ticket he was like haha how much and I [TS]

01:11:06   because i like to have everything [TS]

01:11:08   explained to me every time I was like [TS]

01:11:10   why don't you explain to me how it works [TS]

01:11:11   and he's like seriously never raised his [TS]

01:11:15   eyes up from the phone he was like [TS]

01:11:16   dollar ticket and I said so not many [TS]

01:11:20   people just going by 14 fine teehee [TS]

01:11:22   there it's an investment in their future [TS]

01:11:23   right and and so I'm like so if i buy [TS]

01:11:26   one dollar gets me one number and two [TS]

01:11:29   dollars gives me two numbers and he's [TS]

01:11:31   like that's right [TS]

01:11:32   and any man honestly my first thought is [TS]

01:11:34   I know that the guy who sells me the [TS]

01:11:37   ticket the gas station that sells me the [TS]

01:11:38   ticket guy gets a cut and i'm already [TS]

01:11:41   resented the money that I'm gonna have [TS]

01:11:42   to get already accepting fucking 20 [TS]

01:11:45   million dollars that this guy's gonna [TS]

01:11:47   get if he sells me the winning ticket [TS]

01:11:48   because he's not even he's not even [TS]

01:11:50   participating in this one but then I do [TS]

01:11:54   i do and even crazy thing I say five [TS]

01:11:56   bucks and I get five tickets [TS]

01:11:59   it's not that crazy I mean it's stupid [TS]

01:12:01   to buy lottery tickets at all but if [TS]

01:12:03   you're gonna do it you might as well buy [TS]

01:12:04   a hundred well but this is the problem [TS]

01:12:06   because how do you think i did get the [TS]

01:12:08   500 million that makes you think that's [TS]

01:12:10   right they get from people going and [TS]

01:12:11   spending their patrons that but i'm [TS]

01:12:14   thinking if you're gonna buy a symbolic [TS]

01:12:16   lottery ticket [TS]

01:12:17   how do you buy five symbolic watery [TS]

01:12:20   tickets you have just cut the symbolism [TS]

01:12:22   in fifths through but it still the same [TS]

01:12:26   size pie but wait so you're saying [TS]

01:12:29   that's not enough for too many think you [TS]

01:12:31   should just get one I think you should [TS]

01:12:32   just get one because Lolich lottery [TS]

01:12:34   tickets right [TS]

01:12:35   your you that the chances of winning are [TS]

01:12:38   not the point [TS]

01:12:39   oh you're paranoid i have luck you're [TS]

01:12:41   saying you know I'm fucking care if i [TS]

01:12:43   was just it's it's reached the point [TS]

01:12:44   where it's nominally sensible for me to [TS]

01:12:47   try and make 300 million dollars by [TS]

01:12:48   going to the gas station so I will go [TS]

01:12:51   ahead and kick in one dollar I'm not an [TS]

01:12:53   idiot like I've off by five and you're [TS]

01:12:54   not gonna go by like a block with other [TS]

01:12:56   folks from your office yeah like you [TS]

01:12:58   want if you're trying to reduce your [TS]

01:12:59   your your odds or whatever you could buy [TS]

01:13:02   a million of them and still have no [TS]

01:13:04   chance of winning [TS]

01:13:05   I just I just I don't even I didn't take [TS]

01:13:09   coupons at walgreens you get chased out [TS]

01:13:11   of my daughter were chased out of the [TS]

01:13:13   store yesterday by the guy at the [TS]

01:13:15   counter because he given me some kind of [TS]

01:13:16   something-something ten dollar coupon [TS]

01:13:17   and there's never been a coupon that [TS]

01:13:20   wasn't like for suckers [TS]

01:13:21   it was this was this so they live test I [TS]

01:13:25   don't have my glasses with me [TS]
