Roderick on the Line

Ep. 146: "Science Farmer"

00:00:00   this episode of Roderick on the wine is [TS]

00:00:01   sponsored by cards against humanity this [TS]

00:00:04   month they asked the double clicks to [TS]

00:00:06   help me say hi to john reading this John [TS]

00:00:09   what you've been eating two day [TS]

00:00:17   [Music] [TS]

00:00:21   hello hey John beep-boop-beep-boop-beep [TS]

00:00:25   art would you like to begin a [TS]

00:00:27   conversation online [TS]

00:00:31   how're my pops and buzzes hows about [TS]

00:00:34   buzzing buzzing crackle and pop listen [TS]

00:00:36   pop crackle crackle did you change [TS]

00:00:39   something [TS]

00:00:40   crackle bows bows mmm on athletics it [TS]

00:00:43   turned it turned out that my that's [TS]

00:00:46   right those are on it you know I used to [TS]

00:00:47   have a college teacher that never tell [TS]

00:00:50   you this now he he pronounced that word [TS]

00:00:54   on amanha pay ya is that's a little kid [TS]

00:00:58   because he had a ligature well he felt [TS]

00:01:01   that he felt the Greek letter that is a [TS]

00:01:04   and E squished together or I think it's [TS]

00:01:08   is a date its Zoe and then finally it's [TS]

00:01:11   a diphthong [TS]

00:01:12   but yeah he he wanted it pronounced he [TS]

00:01:14   felt that that was the correct [TS]

00:01:15   pronunciation on a mono pay and he and [TS]

00:01:19   he used that word all the time in the [TS]

00:01:21   class i don't remember what the class [TS]

00:01:23   was but now I cannot say it any other [TS]

00:01:25   way it is it is not the artist anal of [TS]

00:01:29   of 1990 onomatopoeia a I don't want to [TS]

00:01:33   take you off your tech talk buzz crackle [TS]

00:01:35   but but but i do idea want to talk about [TS]

00:01:38   for announcing something or doing [TS]

00:01:41   something a certain way correctly even [TS]

00:01:43   when it sounds wrong I like the single [TS]

00:01:45   back to that ok so what turns out turn [TS]

00:01:48   all turns out all that buzzing and [TS]

00:01:50   crackling was just in my voice only need [TS]

00:01:54   to clear throat a little that was just I [TS]

00:01:56   had a little bit of I had a little bit [TS]

00:01:58   of AI don't 88 big bite [TS]

00:02:01   oh yeah yeah roll off on the ground [TS]

00:02:04   switch yeah exactly [TS]

00:02:05   that was the problem I i was i was what [TS]

00:02:08   I was doing was I was dumb I was 8 bit i [TS]

00:02:12   was told you were doing eight bit like a [TS]

00:02:15   new window will pop someone like the [TS]

00:02:18   beginning of a lot of psyche songs we [TS]

00:02:20   get the deliberate fucking in of the [TS]

00:02:22   guitar cable Kingsley's where it's gone [TS]

00:02:25   and i'm thrilled array well start [TS]

00:02:27   getting those tips from people [TS]

00:02:29   it was an anomaly i think it was a [TS]

00:02:31   gravity anomaly [TS]

00:02:33   if you uh if you know anything about [TS]

00:02:34   gravity anomalies you know that they can [TS]

00:02:37   be used to communicate across time by [TS]

00:02:41   Matthew McConaughey is that right okay [TS]

00:02:44   the flat circle [TS]

00:02:45   mhm i was a flat circle this is exactly [TS]

00:02:47   where he was a scientist is that correct [TS]

00:02:49   I'm so mad I'm so mad I you know I was [TS]

00:02:53   barely aware of interstellar as it was [TS]

00:02:55   happening as it was when it was coming [TS]

00:02:56   out and I remember there being some talk [TS]

00:02:58   I think Neil deGrasse Tyson had some [TS]

00:03:00   just a long string of tweets about the [TS]

00:03:03   science and it but I was just ignoring [TS]

00:03:04   it all [TS]

00:03:05   yeah and then I was in a hotel room and [TS]

00:03:08   and it was on the TV and i watched it [TS]

00:03:12   and I was just I was just fist clenching [TS]

00:03:15   Lee mad the entire time [TS]

00:03:17   you know i'm not i'm not be and probably [TS]

00:03:20   the fifth-best physicist that you know [TS]

00:03:23   we're here [TS]

00:03:24   I mean you know your take right well we [TS]

00:03:28   might be the only physicist I now so I'm [TS]

00:03:31   not in a position to say there are all I [TS]

00:03:33   think there are a lot of people that you [TS]

00:03:34   and I know who it turns out our [TS]

00:03:37   physicists closet with is business [TS]

00:03:40   yeah that we just don't know like i [TS]

00:03:41   would i would say grant Balfour is [TS]

00:03:43   probably pretty good physicist yeah you [TS]

00:03:46   probably just John syracuse said grant [TS]

00:03:47   Balfour we've got a physicist friends [TS]

00:03:49   for sure i would say that they would say [TS]

00:03:51   that they probably weren't physicists [TS]

00:03:53   and technical the physicist that's right [TS]

00:03:55   and i'm going to probably agree with [TS]

00:03:56   them and i'm not saying about you know [TS]

00:03:59   what I'm not the fifth-best I'm in the [TS]

00:04:01   top five business right but you because [TS]

00:04:03   I'm gravity anomaly that changes a lot [TS]

00:04:04   that's right gravity anomalies can often [TS]

00:04:07   take one that could take a group of [TS]

00:04:09   physicists and andrey sort them and then [TS]

00:04:13   do it again right it's called lensing [TS]

00:04:15   lensing and that's just part of the [TS]

00:04:17   parallax effect is that gets well it's [TS]

00:04:19   closed it's closed you're on you're on [TS]

00:04:20   to something to doppelganger effect [TS]

00:04:22   that's what it sounds like the bridge [TS]

00:04:23   sirens going by me and me [TS]

00:04:26   dinner that's it that's a that's a whole [TS]

00:04:28   different category the doppelganger [TS]

00:04:29   effect huh [TS]

00:04:30   and it's actually pronounced do to gain [TS]

00:04:32   triple-triple Gungor there for longer [TS]

00:04:34   than even nerd in a team movie devil [TS]

00:04:38   gauger now there's a little guitar thing [TS]

00:04:45   that happens when he comes in [TS]

00:04:46   ok now its doppelganger but I don't want [TS]

00:04:51   to off music Paulette expects [TS]

00:04:54   yeah you want to actually do want to [TS]

00:04:56   talk about physics but you should say [TS]

00:04:57   that because I whatever that was over [TS]

00:04:59   pronouncing i'm gonna skip that and now [TS]

00:05:01   i'm going to willing suspension of [TS]

00:05:02   disbelief which I wrote down because [TS]

00:05:04   isn't it interesting it's super [TS]

00:05:06   interesting to me like what I will [TS]

00:05:07   willfully suspend my discipline [TS]

00:05:09   disbelief about like I got the thing is [TS]

00:05:11   here's my thesis and I'm not a physicist [TS]

00:05:13   like you but I can as I sit here today I [TS]

00:05:15   can't tell you what it is about a film [TS]

00:05:17   or TV show or novel that makes me go [TS]

00:05:19   sure right and otherwise you know em [TS]

00:05:23   right it's really hard to say [TS]

00:05:27   all i know is i know that John Woo [TS]

00:05:29   movies are not realistic but i'm totally [TS]

00:05:32   in [TS]

00:05:32   I know a great movies are not realistic [TS]

00:05:34   but i'm totally in [TS]

00:05:35   how do you feel about it when people are [TS]

00:05:38   are performing karate while standing on [TS]

00:05:42   top of bamboo shoots totally talk just [TS]

00:05:46   briefly once before I don't have a [TS]

00:05:47   problem with it on because I think [TS]

00:05:49   that's part of the the universe the [TS]

00:05:51   Cinematic Universe you know it's just [TS]

00:05:53   you know the biggest problem if I had to [TS]

00:05:55   say one big thing and I don't have any [TS]

00:05:57   specific examples this in mind I know [TS]

00:05:59   this happens a lot and a lot of movies [TS]

00:06:01   in particular the first act set up is a [TS]

00:06:04   lot of world-building the others the [TS]

00:06:06   first act as a lot of establishing the [TS]

00:06:09   ironclad rules that will lead to much of [TS]

00:06:12   the drama that unfolds over the next two [TS]

00:06:14   hours in 30 minutes [TS]

00:06:15   I really like the way you're saying this [TS]

00:06:17   thank you and then stuff happens in the [TS]

00:06:20   second act rite stuff happens [TS]

00:06:22   virtually every rule ironclad rule that [TS]

00:06:25   was established in the first third kind [TS]

00:06:28   of gets thrown out the window without [TS]

00:06:29   explanation and that's frustrating and I [TS]

00:06:31   feel cheated and I feel duped [TS]

00:06:32   well in this case in this in this movie [TS]

00:06:35   the DRL ever Oh interstellar right in [TS]

00:06:37   this interstellar movie the first act is [TS]

00:06:40   the problematic act because the first [TS]

00:06:43   act is both boring [TS]

00:06:45   well it's boring and implausible but [TS]

00:06:46   also dumb poorly thought out and it sets [TS]

00:06:50   up the plot for the rest of the film [TS]

00:06:52   like this the the stuff happens part of [TS]

00:06:54   the movie where the spaceships are going [TS]

00:06:57   and people are spinning around in space [TS]

00:06:58   is very quiet [TS]

00:06:59   mhm and and keira knightley or whoever [TS]

00:07:04   the the female lead is not keira [TS]

00:07:06   knightley it's a it's a some that's an [TS]

00:07:11   unactivated actually actually an actress [TS]

00:07:14   that I have danced with haha can't [TS]

00:07:18   remember her name had a wedding if I was [TS]

00:07:20   at a wedding she was there at three and [TS]

00:07:24   i thought to myself I'm going to ask her [TS]

00:07:26   to dance and then it was more of sorts [TS]

00:07:28   of more of a group dance you know what I [TS]

00:07:30   mean like it was sort of like government [TS]

00:07:31   asked her to having a lot of Martin [TS]

00:07:33   causal gonna they're gonna want to start [TS]

00:07:35   out with that with a friendly group [TS]

00:07:36   dance yeah so it was like five of us [TS]

00:07:38   kind of group dancing and it turned out [TS]

00:07:40   he just got back from best stone and [TS]

00:07:42   you're going to really earn it [TS]

00:07:43   that's right yeah you don't just grab [TS]

00:07:45   somebody and kiss them in Times Square [TS]

00:07:46   anymore you can have a group dance there [TS]

00:07:48   was a group dancing with those and that [TS]

00:07:50   i was actually that was the moment that [TS]

00:07:52   I realized that even famous actors are [TS]

00:07:58   first desbiens em right right this was [TS]

00:08:03   that this was kind of a this was a [TS]

00:08:05   moment for me because you have us give [TS]

00:08:08   us a sense of famous actors that they [TS]

00:08:12   are very move their only stars movie [TS]

00:08:16   stars they're actually they're in a [TS]

00:08:18   different category but of course there [TS]

00:08:20   are not they started out as lesbians as [TS]

00:08:23   high school thespians yeah and then they [TS]

00:08:25   became college lesbians and then they [TS]

00:08:27   became a movie stars but they are still [TS]

00:08:29   in their heart says be anak and so we we [TS]

00:08:34   were doing this this this group dance [TS]

00:08:36   and there was so much does be anak hands [TS]

00:08:42   and face and body work [TS]

00:08:46   that by the way in real time people were [TS]

00:08:49   out there jazz hand around it was really [TS]

00:08:50   happening and there was just a lot of [TS]

00:08:52   like a everybody's looking at us and I [TS]

00:08:58   was already too old and grouchy to to [TS]

00:09:05   really enjoy it i was enjoying it more [TS]

00:09:08   from a standpoint of like I'm watching [TS]

00:09:10   this but I walked away feeling like [TS]

00:09:12   outright I bet you I bet you even [TS]

00:09:16   Harrison Ford is like this right i mean [TS]

00:09:18   when you get them like it when you get a [TS]

00:09:19   better wedding you think so is by like [TS]

00:09:21   wow I have never happened [TS]

00:09:24   I don't know where is it is it i'm [TS]

00:09:26   trying to get this right so there's a [TS]

00:09:27   drama to it there's definitely an [TS]

00:09:28   element of performance there dancing [TS]

00:09:30   like people are watching [TS]

00:09:31   yeah you remember you remember being in [TS]

00:09:35   high school huh yeah and your vaguely [TS]

00:09:39   you remember the people that were in [TS]

00:09:42   theater and how they were there was a [TS]

00:09:45   little bit in theater but I definitely [TS]

00:09:46   know what you mean [TS]

00:09:47   yeah and and that that that thing that [TS]

00:09:52   thing and so yea even back then a lot of [TS]

00:09:55   dancing in a big circle and then kind of [TS]

00:09:58   suggesting a gesture that everybody [TS]

00:10:00   could do together [TS]

00:10:01   yep it's it's sort of like a goth conga [TS]

00:10:03   line yeah yeah well yeah well yeah I [TS]

00:10:07   mean anyway so suffice to say that I [TS]

00:10:10   know this act or dress and I don't [TS]

00:10:15   remember her name because i have a very [TS]

00:10:16   hard time which is probably on the [TS]

00:10:17   community show [TS]

00:10:19   nope nope no I think she's a more famous [TS]

00:10:22   actor than that [TS]

00:10:23   wow she was into movies I you know what [TS]

00:10:28   it'll get a little it'll come to you in [TS]

00:10:29   any case she was there [TS]

00:10:31   matthew mcconaughey was there neither [TS]

00:10:32   one of them did I for a moment believe [TS]

00:10:34   was a scientist but that didn't matter [TS]

00:10:36   during the space part because who knows [TS]

00:10:39   who they're going to put in space right [TS]

00:10:41   yeah you know what I mean like it 50 [TS]

00:10:44   years from now who knows who the [TS]

00:10:46   astronauts are going to be like I didn't [TS]

00:10:48   buy that ethan hawke could get into the [TS]

00:10:51   spaceship with his bad eyes [TS]

00:10:53   in the other speaking but you can I get [TS]

00:10:56   what you're saying no I mean things can [TS]

00:10:57   be kind of it used to be you had to be [TS]

00:10:59   an engineer and a pilot and you have to [TS]

00:11:04   be at NASA you know something that could [TS]

00:11:05   be apt developers yeah that's right [TS]

00:11:07   that's exactly right it could be elon [TS]

00:11:09   musk with the with the leather but a [TS]

00:11:12   biplane pilots helmet on the front of [TS]

00:11:15   the spaceship that he designed to [TS]

00:11:16   actually look like his own face spur you [TS]

00:11:21   know shooting up into space the biggest [TS]

00:11:23   penis of all [TS]

00:11:24   yeah so I that part I didn't have a [TS]

00:11:26   problem with but the part of the part [TS]

00:11:28   that it was establishing like the that [TS]

00:11:32   but it does feel free to spoil it for me [TS]

00:11:37   know in Hathaway and half away you dance [TS]

00:11:40   with Anne Hathaway in a group a small [TS]

00:11:42   group five people dancing around at the [TS]

00:11:47   time I was like you know I was [TS]

00:11:50   entertaining the idea that maybe our [TS]

00:11:53   eyes would lock across a crowded dance [TS]

00:11:55   floor [TS]

00:11:56   mhm but looking back at photograph of [TS]

00:12:01   myself at the time i was missing a tooth [TS]

00:12:05   and I did have like hair down to the [TS]

00:12:09   middle of my back and just a difference [TS]

00:12:14   with that video series on the YouTube of [TS]

00:12:17   you [TS]

00:12:17   the 13 songs with John yells yet some [TS]

00:12:20   real long hair [TS]

00:12:21   yeah really long hair it got even longer [TS]

00:12:23   and i think at this wedding it was as [TS]

00:12:25   long as it was going to get and so I can [TS]

00:12:28   only imagine i mean i'm talking about [TS]

00:12:30   and hathaways artistic lesbionic dancing [TS]

00:12:35   i can only imagine what she was seeing [TS]

00:12:38   looking back across the circle maybe [TS]

00:12:41   that's why the group dance right [TS]

00:12:43   safety in numbers little bit of that [TS]

00:12:45   little bit of like huh [TS]

00:12:46   this is interesting how did this guy get [TS]

00:12:49   in here stay away from the biker um [TS]

00:12:51   anyway I don't blame her [TS]

00:12:53   and I've seen her in some movies where I [TS]

00:12:55   thought she was great and she was [TS]

00:12:56   actually a well no she wasn't very good [TS]

00:12:58   in this movie but that's not the point [TS]

00:13:00   the point is science as a [TS]

00:13:04   as a narrative motivator right if you [TS]

00:13:09   see if you go to a movie and you're like [TS]

00:13:10   science is going to motivate this movie [TS]

00:13:12   there is going to be somebody's going to [TS]

00:13:13   use science to tell a story it's going [TS]

00:13:16   to turn on science and I and a sense of [TS]

00:13:20   sense watching the film i have looked it [TS]

00:13:22   up and I've read all the talk about like [TS]

00:13:25   all the science is really good in this [TS]

00:13:27   movie they made sure that the science [TS]

00:13:29   had any like call people in yeah yeah [TS]

00:13:32   consultants and people's this there yeah [TS]

00:13:35   that was that and so the science like [TS]

00:13:38   the black hole that appears in the movie [TS]

00:13:41   looks like a black hole is going to look [TS]

00:13:44   if you ever seen a black holes [TS]

00:13:45   apparently right and so I don't object [TS]

00:13:47   to that [TS]

00:13:48   ok but the but the part where the dad [TS]

00:13:53   out of love for his daughter goes into [TS]

00:14:00   the black hole to communicate with her [TS]

00:14:02   by knocking books off of the shelf in [TS]

00:14:06   her bedroom in the past was not decide [TS]

00:14:11   what happened [TS]

00:14:12   not a thing that arm i don't think that [TS]

00:14:16   you i don't i'm not complaining about [TS]

00:14:18   the science not going to work out a [TS]

00:14:20   system where she know what to watch out [TS]

00:14:22   for falling books this is the thing yeah [TS]

00:14:24   she you know the movie starts she's in [TS]

00:14:27   her bedroom books are falling off the [TS]

00:14:29   shelves moon [TS]

00:14:30   I wonder if that's gonna play into the [TS]

00:14:32   family taking more more poltergeist that [TS]

00:14:34   right i mean sure that anyone would [TS]

00:14:36   unless your father was a science farmer [TS]

00:14:40   let's see what this gentleman farmer who [TS]

00:14:45   used to be a scientist is that what it [TS]

00:14:46   is I'm saying jet pilot retired jet [TS]

00:14:48   pilot science farmer and he says books [TS]

00:14:52   for follow-up there's no such thing as [TS]

00:14:53   ghosts does this is like the first hour [TS]

00:14:55   of the movie where you're like wasn't [TS]

00:14:57   supposed to be some space in this movie [TS]

00:14:59   no no we're talking about the books [TS]

00:15:00   falling off the shelves and some other [TS]

00:15:02   stuff none of it how IC IC so the books [TS]

00:15:06   falling off the shelf that he's trying [TS]

00:15:08   to explain away or actually later on [TS]

00:15:10   turns out caused by him all within this [TS]

00:15:13   space forming future [TS]

00:15:15   manipulating the past through a multiple [TS]

00:15:18   universes scenarios for the [TS]

00:15:20   controversial ending John there's no [TS]

00:15:23   more controversial ending after this [TS]

00:15:24   ending I i think if there was if there [TS]

00:15:27   were people that had that we're creating [TS]

00:15:29   a controversy about this film about some [TS]

00:15:31   element in it i dismissed them with a [TS]

00:15:35   with a with a Scott because the [TS]

00:15:39   controversy about this film is that it [TS]

00:15:40   is a garbage barge [TS]

00:15:42   hi i know is divisive it's a good film [TS]

00:15:46   is a garbage barge starring the ultimate [TS]

00:15:49   like overt and tanned leather captain of [TS]

00:15:53   garbage barge Matthew McConaughey and he [TS]

00:15:56   recruited this poor keira knightley [TS]

00:15:58   person I and Hathaway and have the way [TS]

00:16:02   to a she play someone called brand [TS]

00:16:06   yes she does some very she does a very [TS]

00:16:08   bad acting on it and there are some [TS]

00:16:12   other there some other actors in it that [TS]

00:16:14   do fine fine acting jobs but the entire [TS]

00:16:18   thing is a garbage barge and it's a 10 [TS]

00:16:20   and I and I cannot help but compare it [TS]

00:16:23   to them to the more recent film which [TS]

00:16:26   used science to create a robot raccoon [TS]

00:16:30   that had a smart mouth for and a been a [TS]

00:16:32   big machine gun [TS]

00:16:33   yeah shouldn't work and think everything [TS]

00:16:36   in that movie I believed [TS]

00:16:37   yep one hundred percent and loved and [TS]

00:16:39   this garbage barge of a movie which was [TS]

00:16:41   supposed to be smart and which multiple [TS]

00:16:44   multiple film reviewers praised for its [TS]

00:16:46   smartness people were for this is why a [TS]

00:16:48   divisive because i haven't seen the film [TS]

00:16:50   but I heard a lot of people were just [TS]

00:16:52   coming out of the theater freaking out [TS]

00:16:53   and talking about her life changed and [TS]

00:16:55   other people were like to be watched the [TS]

00:16:56   same movie [TS]

00:16:57   mm-hmm you know I learned this i'll [TS]

00:17:00   probably get this wrong i'm doing this [TS]

00:17:01   from memory but I learned a couple [TS]

00:17:02   distinctions in the last few years that [TS]

00:17:03   I think are interesting and you probably [TS]

00:17:05   know these but won't admit it you know [TS]

00:17:07   like in John Rizzo forget science [TS]

00:17:09   fiction and fantasy right now are you [TS]

00:17:12   can I know I know I know the difference [TS]

00:17:15   between modes okay okay that's a start [TS]

00:17:17   and Lord of the Rings is fantasy fantasy [TS]

00:17:20   well no here's the thing but in fantasy [TS]

00:17:22   don't you have like there's like high [TS]

00:17:23   fantasy and like low fantasy high [TS]

00:17:26   fantasy is where it really it's like a [TS]

00:17:28   whole different [TS]

00:17:29   world like a different universe or [TS]

00:17:32   something like that and forgive me [TS]

00:17:33   everybody in the world is going to get [TS]

00:17:34   mad at this but it is the distinction [TS]

00:17:35   being measured high fantasy well but [TS]

00:17:39   then also i dunno there's hard science [TS]

00:17:40   fiction [TS]

00:17:41   oh okay right so there's a kind of [TS]

00:17:43   science fiction where every conceivable [TS]

00:17:45   detail is sweated to be as accurate as [TS]

00:17:49   possible but also even in a speculative [TS]

00:17:51   fiction universe to really cater the [TS]

00:17:54   sort of person who like you know ask the [TS]

00:17:57   question of william shatner at the [TS]

00:17:59   convention like that you know it isn't a [TS]

00:18:01   distinction because there's some kind of [TS]

00:18:02   science fiction where you got a fucking [TS]

00:18:04   robot raccoon and nobody minds right and [TS]

00:18:07   this is the end this is the thing I love [TS]

00:18:10   hard science fiction and generally I [TS]

00:18:12   find that it works best when it is like [TS]

00:18:15   Blade Runner a plausible world where [TS]

00:18:18   where you eat you have you've posited [TS]

00:18:23   the future based on like one or two one [TS]

00:18:28   or two minor changes and it is produced [TS]

00:18:31   this future world righty meaner or it [TS]

00:18:34   like you take a lot of elements that we [TS]

00:18:37   all sort of except and know to be true [TS]

00:18:39   and you introduce one fantastical [TS]

00:18:42   science development [TS]

00:18:44   okay and I can handle I can handle those [TS]

00:18:46   even the ones that are like hard science [TS]

00:18:48   except fantasy right like the like ones [TS]

00:18:52   where time travel is possible or [TS]

00:18:54   something like that where where they [TS]

00:18:55   don't they don't take or what was the [TS]

00:18:57   one where the guy was coming back into [TS]

00:18:59   the yet they were people in the future [TS]

00:19:01   we're sending people back in the past to [TS]

00:19:03   get killed [TS]

00:19:04   oh yeah the night inception but rooper [TS]

00:19:09   looper right i mean at as if you sit and [TS]

00:19:13   worry about time travel like don't talk [TS]

00:19:15   about time traveling and they covered it [TS]

00:19:17   right in the film and it's hilarious [TS]

00:19:18   that moment right here just like okay [TS]

00:19:20   except that and then you then you go [TS]

00:19:23   along with the plot right and what what [TS]

00:19:25   this movie did was that it tried to get [TS]

00:19:28   the hard science right except they're [TS]

00:19:31   there nobody had done any thinking about [TS]

00:19:33   a about like the human element right [TS]

00:19:38   they had they had they gone toward the [TS]

00:19:41   hard science and they had forgotten [TS]

00:19:42   different [TS]

00:19:42   about people John they forgot about [TS]

00:19:44   people they forgot to make the human [TS]

00:19:46   motivation plausible-like although the [TS]

00:19:50   whole of the whole emotional core of [TS]

00:19:53   this film depends on the idea that a [TS]

00:19:59   daughter of a father who is a who is a [TS]

00:20:02   space farmer a Kappa science farmer gets [TS]

00:20:06   an opportunity to go into space [TS]

00:20:07   uh-huh and his ten-year-old daughter [TS]

00:20:09   says had it don't leave and he says I [TS]

00:20:12   must go into space [TS]

00:20:14   I am a time-space farmer this is what [TS]

00:20:18   science farmers do with science farmers [TS]

00:20:20   do they go into space right so that's [TS]

00:20:21   the that is the that is a thing from a [TS]

00:20:24   from basically every novel every movie [TS]

00:20:27   that the father says goodbye daughter i [TS]

00:20:30   am called out to the I'm riding out into [TS]

00:20:33   the West I am blasting off into space [TS]

00:20:36   and i will i will be back or I will [TS]

00:20:39   bring you and he's either saying it to [TS]

00:20:40   his daughter or his wife or you know [TS]

00:20:42   somebody but in this film the daughter [TS]

00:20:46   is so betrayed by the fact that her [TS]

00:20:49   father would blast off into space even [TS]

00:20:52   though she is herself a science [TS]

00:20:54   she's a science farmer herself she [TS]

00:20:56   becomes a science farmer is that right [TS]

00:20:58   it runs in the family to it's a family [TS]

00:20:59   science farm right but despite being a [TS]

00:21:01   science farmer she cannot ever forgive [TS]

00:21:04   him for this decision to go into space [TS]

00:21:06   nominally to save humanity and the whole [TS]

00:21:11   film is it is all of all the drama in it [TS]

00:21:15   is about the about the about Matthew [TS]

00:21:19   McConaughey being primarily motivated to [TS]

00:21:24   get back to earth to his daughter and [TS]

00:21:27   she still even as an adult devastated [TS]

00:21:31   obviously never been in love obviously [TS]

00:21:33   never like falling off her bike [TS]

00:21:35   the worst thing that ever happened to [TS]

00:21:36   her and the only thing that ever [TS]

00:21:37   happened her is that her father left and [TS]

00:21:40   like she doesn't forgive him for it and [TS]

00:21:42   he doesn't and he can't say like a man [TS]

00:21:46   uh a space farmers got to do a space [TS]

00:21:48   farmers gotta do like there's no it [TS]

00:21:50   isn't a science phone to keep in touch [TS]

00:21:52   so he's gotta throw books [TS]

00:21:53   well this is the thing [TS]

00:21:54   you know what happens is they get down [TS]

00:21:57   close to the gravity of the black hole [TS]

00:22:00   and time moves more slowly for him out [TS]

00:22:03   here and I like this part this is this [TS]

00:22:05   is interesting science right this is the [TS]

00:22:07   part of the movie that I wanted to watch [TS]

00:22:08   all day which is like an hour on this [TS]

00:22:10   planet is seven years back home and so [TS]

00:22:13   he's like women i can't spend you know [TS]

00:22:15   like they got down on the planet there [TS]

00:22:17   but an engine flooded or whatever like [TS]

00:22:20   hurt however come on we gotta start the [TS]

00:22:23   fucking ship [TS]

00:22:24   I gotta get back that's another year [TS]

00:22:26   that just went by Remy room and by the [TS]

00:22:29   time they get out of the black hole [TS]

00:22:32   uh everybody on earth is grown-up gosh [TS]

00:22:36   and it's like that is one of the great [TS]

00:22:38   that's a great idea right that's a great [TS]

00:22:40   plot point that's a great thing and also [TS]

00:22:44   the open the door to a lot of humanity [TS]

00:22:46   and storytelling for stride rite for [TS]

00:22:48   fantastic and the end the one you know [TS]

00:22:50   and and what your mind wants to do is [TS]

00:22:51   like they do you think can't get their [TS]

00:22:53   motor started and by the time they do [TS]

00:22:56   they come back out of the black hole [TS]

00:22:58   gravity field and earth is 400 years in [TS]

00:23:03   the future right that's what's [TS]

00:23:04   interesting [TS]

00:23:05   yeah that would be an interesting story [TS]

00:23:06   but instead like they get off the planet [TS]

00:23:09   and like his daughters grown-up and she [TS]

00:23:11   spent the last 40 years like sucking her [TS]

00:23:13   thumb while becoming a genius scientist [TS]

00:23:16   but sucking her thumb because her dad [TS]

00:23:17   didn't come back [TS]

00:23:18   ok and it's like seriously dad's don't [TS]

00:23:20   come back all the time [TS]

00:23:21   dad's go out for a pack of cigarettes [TS]

00:23:23   and don't come back like if every kid in [TS]

00:23:25   the world whose dad didn't come back [TS]

00:23:27   suck their thumb and became a genius [TS]

00:23:29   physicist well we have a better space [TS]

00:23:31   program but it sounds like the story [TS]

00:23:32   needs her to feel that way in order for [TS]

00:23:35   the and again i have not seen a movie [TS]

00:23:36   but in order for the drama from the [TS]

00:23:38   McConaughey guy to work rise to be that [TS]

00:23:41   feeling from this is my objection this [TS]

00:23:44   the movie needs her to behave in a way [TS]

00:23:46   that is not not human right and needs [TS]

00:23:50   him to behave like whatever whatever [TS]

00:23:52   their bond is like people have those [TS]

00:23:55   bonds but but anybody anybody with [TS]

00:23:57   normal human feelings watches that and [TS]

00:23:59   says you know what my dad I'm 10 years [TS]

00:24:00   older than 12 years old I love science [TS]

00:24:02   my dad is a space ship captain he's [TS]

00:24:04   gonna go and I'm I'm gonna be sad but [TS]

00:24:07   like [TS]

00:24:07   we're all gonna we're gonna get on with [TS]

00:24:09   our lives right that's the north that is [TS]

00:24:10   what up any human would do that isn't [TS]

00:24:13   like emotionally broken i'm confused I I [TS]

00:24:16   thought it was the science of three off [TS]

00:24:18   no I liked the science it was the [TS]

00:24:20   relationships the people part well so so [TS]

00:24:22   then so so this is so that this is the [TS]

00:24:25   problem right [TS]

00:24:26   he is in he has access somehow to up to [TS]

00:24:34   some sort of crossroads place created by [TS]

00:24:40   future humans for reasons that are not [TS]

00:24:44   explained he is in a crossroads where he [TS]

00:24:48   can go from he can go across multiple [TS]

00:24:53   universes he can go across time I guess [TS]

00:24:56   right [TS]

00:24:57   he's in a season and he ends up in this [TS]

00:24:59   black hole in her room sort of a lot [TS]

00:25:01   2001 a Space Odyssey where you can go [TS]

00:25:04   across time and he is using that [TS]

00:25:07   incredible power not to kill Hitler not [TS]

00:25:12   to go back to a time before he was born [TS]

00:25:16   and give his parents a riddle right that [TS]

00:25:23   only he can solve not not a not to do [TS]

00:25:26   anything interesting her except to [TS]

00:25:28   communicate to his daughter by knocking [TS]

00:25:31   books off the shelves in the past two [TS]

00:25:34   contradictory messages one because that [TS]

00:25:37   because the because the gravity field [TS]

00:25:38   this so boring the gravity the gravity [TS]

00:25:42   field and the and all of that is how he [TS]

00:25:45   and his daughter found the NASA people [TS]

00:25:47   in the first place so he must have done [TS]

00:25:49   that he must have signaled to her to go [TS]

00:25:53   find the space people which is what [TS]

00:25:56   produced the situation where he flew [TS]

00:25:58   into space right so he sent that message [TS]

00:26:00   and then spends a lot of time knocking [TS]

00:26:02   books off the shelves in a coded order [TS]

00:26:05   so that she receives the message stay [TS]

00:26:08   and the message stay is meant to be [TS]

00:26:11   communicated to him in the past through [TS]

00:26:13   his daughter all telling him not to go [TS]

00:26:16   typically turned it but if he didn't go [TS]

00:26:19   none of the been mad at ya [TS]

00:26:22   it's like the writing by doing what he [TS]

00:26:25   actually stay [TS]

00:26:25   no you didn't stay because that's [TS]

00:26:27   idiotic if he had stayed then he [TS]

00:26:30   wouldn't have been naughty right now I [TS]

00:26:31   know we're gonna have a problem that's [TS]

00:26:33   the killer problem but they didn't even [TS]

00:26:35   address that killed Hitler we wouldn't [TS]

00:26:36   know Hitler is today they didn't address [TS]

00:26:38   the fact that in an infinite number of [TS]

00:26:41   other possible multiple multiple verses [TS]

00:26:43   he did stay right there [TS]

00:26:46   they didn't address any of that they're [TS]

00:26:48   using all of that interesting physics [TS]

00:26:51   and crazy like you know Einstein me in [TS]

00:26:55   like brain fuckery to tell the dumbest [TS]

00:26:59   dumb story featuring two dummies that [TS]

00:27:05   you don't care about in the first place [TS]

00:27:07   like if you do care about their [TS]

00:27:09   relationship if you do care about this [TS]

00:27:12   father and daughter you are a dummy [TS]

00:27:13   because they are such dummies and all of [TS]

00:27:17   the physics becomes this like that it [TS]

00:27:19   becomes like all this window dressing on [TS]

00:27:23   a on a on a story on a pretty pedestrian [TS]

00:27:25   on a pedestrian and sentimental story [TS]

00:27:28   numbnuts sentimental story like if you [TS]

00:27:31   took the science out of that movie and [TS]

00:27:32   it was just like here's the story here [TS]

00:27:34   the people that you're going to end up [TS]

00:27:35   caring about others his father the [TS]

00:27:37   daughter some other people and like do [TS]

00:27:40   you care about their lives to care about [TS]

00:27:42   whether they succeed in their quest for [TS]

00:27:45   you care if they are reunited you care [TS]

00:27:47   about any of that [TS]

00:27:49   and the answer is no you couldn't [TS]

00:27:51   possibly because I'll and ultimately [TS]

00:27:54   this is this is I think the key then [TS]

00:27:56   Hollywood this is the message that [TS]

00:27:58   Hollywood needs to receive you cannot [TS]

00:27:59   care about Matthew McConaughey can't you [TS]

00:28:05   can watch him [TS]

00:28:06   it can be interested in his call all I [TS]

00:28:08   know you could be interested in him he [TS]

00:28:10   can walk across the stage and you can be [TS]

00:28:11   like uh-huh [TS]

00:28:12   you think because you can't be trusted [TS]

00:28:14   no because you cannot care about him [TS]

00:28:16   think about this [TS]

00:28:17   look at his face think about his role [TS]

00:28:19   this is an hour into some hard science [TS]

00:28:21   fiction think about it is it possible to [TS]

00:28:23   actually care about Matthew McConaughey [TS]

00:28:24   could you write a film where Matthew [TS]

00:28:26   McConaughey was the actor playing any [TS]

00:28:28   part i challenge you any part and you [TS]

00:28:31   are watching him and looking into his [TS]

00:28:33   space in his eyes and you care about [TS]

00:28:34   what happens yeah the Dallas buyers club [TS]

00:28:36   did you care about him I didn't finish [TS]

00:28:39   it right there were people in that movie [TS]

00:28:42   that you cared about it seemed like a [TS]

00:28:43   good movie [TS]

00:28:44   it was a very interesting movie and it [TS]

00:28:46   was an act early experience where you [TS]

00:28:50   watch these actors really really act the [TS]

00:28:52   shit out of what they were doing [TS]

00:28:54   I thought he was getting out of the [TS]

00:28:55   first part which i watched I nothing [TS]

00:28:57   against the the second two parts but he [TS]

00:29:00   seemed to really inhabit the role [TS]

00:29:02   yeah i really put him as a scrunchie [TS]

00:29:04   squirrely drug I he absolutely did and a [TS]

00:29:07   guy that you enjoyed watching but did [TS]

00:29:11   not personally care about now and a good [TS]

00:29:12   role for Matthew McConaughey fantastic [TS]

00:29:15   role and then at the end what you care [TS]

00:29:18   about is the tens the hundreds of [TS]

00:29:21   thousands of people who are suffering [TS]

00:29:23   from aids that this particular guy his [TS]

00:29:27   actions I hit up me helping them right [TS]

00:29:30   you cared about the people that starts [TS]

00:29:33   out as barfly turns in gandhi turns into [TS]

00:29:35   Gandhi right you can't you cared about [TS]

00:29:37   the people but he you did not care about [TS]

00:29:40   and i cannot i cannot think of a single [TS]

00:29:43   and you know what my objection to [TS]

00:29:46   Matthew McConaughey started in a [TS]

00:29:48   science-fiction role which was to [TS]

00:29:52   remember you know I dazed and confused [TS]

00:29:56   no messy Matthew McConaughey was great [TS]

00:29:57   and amazing views and in fact that maybe [TS]

00:29:59   the one example where I actually kinda [TS]

00:30:01   did [TS]

00:30:02   now I didn't care about but I sure liked [TS]

00:30:04   him now what movie [TS]

00:30:06   matthew mcconaughey and I could have [TS]

00:30:08   gone through life perfectly fine with [TS]

00:30:11   each other right he's on one path I'm on [TS]

00:30:13   another he's playing he's playing most [TS]

00:30:15   of the roles that he plays and I am [TS]

00:30:17   enjoying watching him but not caring [TS]

00:30:19   about him but in that god damned Jodie [TS]

00:30:22   Foster movie where she built a space [TS]

00:30:25   machine based on a carl sagan is desert [TS]

00:30:29   schools she doesn't meet your father she [TS]

00:30:31   goes and meets well-spaced she made [TS]

00:30:33   meets the aliens who have masqueraded as [TS]

00:30:36   her father because they because she [TS]

00:30:37   wouldn't be able to groc spoiler alert [TS]

00:30:40   she would be able to groc what they look [TS]

00:30:43   I'll IC or shoot or or not they're not [TS]

00:30:45   that just looks but [TS]

00:30:46   their whole form I can I get it so they [TS]

00:30:49   could appear to her [TS]

00:30:50   they could have appeared to her as a [TS]

00:30:51   swarm of bees Coke machine they appeared [TS]

00:30:54   as a talking Coke machine belt buckle [TS]

00:30:56   but instead they chose to appear to her [TS]

00:30:57   as her as her father which is a fucked [TS]

00:30:59   up thing for an alien consciousness to [TS]

00:31:01   do typically that's even allowed in the [TS]

00:31:03   alien ethics if they know enough to [TS]

00:31:05   impersonate somebody's dad they [TS]

00:31:06   shouldn't be allowed to do it right and [TS]

00:31:07   if I don't panic but I I just gotta draw [TS]

00:31:10   a line in the space [TS]

00:31:11   exactly if I were a Jodie Foster space [TS]

00:31:13   scientists and I got out into into like [TS]

00:31:17   a space world and my dead father arrived [TS]

00:31:21   and started talking to me in like I [TS]

00:31:24   would feel it talking to me in his like [TS]

00:31:26   a it is fatherly way and it's definitely [TS]

00:31:28   I would feel very manipulated by these [TS]

00:31:31   UFOs I would instance i would instantly [TS]

00:31:34   not trust them I what I wouldn't want to [TS]

00:31:35   talk to somebody else [TS]

00:31:37   yeah right like okay alright I've seen [TS]

00:31:39   what you can do it's a nice parlor trick [TS]

00:31:41   can you appear to me as Richard Nixon [TS]

00:31:42   now right i could that could have been [TS]

00:31:45   somebody who is new there and they were [TS]

00:31:48   abusing the technology and we're not [TS]

00:31:49   fully aware you don't mean maybe it was [TS]

00:31:51   maybe there's a new alien on the job but [TS]

00:31:53   that's the thing i really i do are they [TS]

00:31:55   contacting so many in sentient races [TS]

00:31:58   around the around the universe that [TS]

00:32:00   there that this is something that [TS]

00:32:02   they've assigned to an intern well what [TS]

00:32:04   about Clarence the angel and now it's a [TS]

00:32:06   wonderful life [TS]

00:32:07   I mean you gotta start somewhere I've [TS]

00:32:09   never seen it's a wonderful life I'm not [TS]

00:32:10   seen that I've seen that it's a it's got [TS]

00:32:12   some multi first time traveling anyway [TS]

00:32:15   in this movie with Jodie Foster [TS]

00:32:18   yeah where the where the swarm of bees [TS]

00:32:20   is appearing to her as her father [TS]

00:32:22   Matthew McConaughey plays a role uh [TS]

00:32:25   where he is some kind of spiritual [TS]

00:32:29   leader [TS]

00:32:30   yeah this is again a fantasy future [TS]

00:32:33   world where he is a how would you [TS]

00:32:37   describe him a young Billy Graham [TS]

00:32:40   who has a lot of moral authority that [TS]

00:32:44   charismatic spiritual figure charismatic [TS]

00:32:47   spiritual figure that's exactly right [TS]

00:32:48   like a young Billy Graham a young [TS]

00:32:50   diagram but with a lot of like a deep [TS]

00:32:53   soul wisdom so that he is again i can [TS]

00:32:57   imagine that right so yeah butBut I can [TS]

00:33:00   imagine playing that but such that he is [TS]

00:33:02   consulted by presidents and heads of [TS]

00:33:06   state like a young Billy Graham like a [TS]

00:33:08   young Billy Graham and he like gets him [TS]

00:33:13   he's on one of these advisory boards [TS]

00:33:15   he's a central figure he is the voice of [TS]

00:33:18   he is the voice of faith and religion in [TS]

00:33:22   this science movie and he is and he so [TS]

00:33:26   i'm watching this movie and I'm like I [TS]

00:33:28   like Jodie Foster like carl sagan i like [TS]

00:33:31   the idea of a science a movie i love the [TS]

00:33:35   idea how this is gonna be terrible [TS]

00:33:36   spoilers if you haven't seen this movie [TS]

00:33:38   i love the idea that you that that space [TS]

00:33:43   travel is basically time travel and this [TS]

00:33:48   and that and the whole spaceship design [TS]

00:33:50   is just that at that we on earth [TS]

00:33:53   perceive it to be like that she just [TS]

00:33:56   fell through a hole and came out the [TS]

00:33:57   other side you couldn't protect you from [TS]

00:33:59   time for a while [TS]

00:34:00   yeah she was gone she was gone for a [TS]

00:34:02   long time in her world and in our world [TS]

00:34:04   and appeared that the Machine didn't [TS]

00:34:05   work and nobody believed that she went [TS]

00:34:07   because it's like the eye like the eye [TS]

00:34:09   so good that such a nice nice a nice [TS]

00:34:12   touch a nice device this device although [TS]

00:34:15   again I feel like a panel of scientists [TS]

00:34:18   would be able to understand this concept [TS]

00:34:20   if she explained it to them and then [TS]

00:34:22   nobody when she got back nobody believed [TS]

00:34:24   her and she was disgraced so what [TS]

00:34:25   happens with the look on his characters [TS]

00:34:27   he learned lesson about love full [TS]

00:34:28   sentence that's exactly that is probably [TS]

00:34:30   what happens i don't i was evident it [TS]

00:34:33   every time he came on the screen i close [TS]

00:34:34   my eyes and I when mmmnn mnnn because [TS]

00:34:38   he's so callow so like so unbelievable [TS]

00:34:43   in the role of somebody that anyone [TS]

00:34:45   would care about that and to put him as [TS]

00:34:50   the like heart of the film like the like [TS]

00:34:53   the emotional part of the movie was such [TS]

00:34:57   a was such a terrible casting decision [TS]

00:35:00   that's a lot of weight to carry for any [TS]

00:35:01   actor but it sounds like you're saying [TS]

00:35:02   he wasn't up to it see what you want in [TS]

00:35:04   that role is a chubby guy if somebody's [TS]

00:35:08   gonna be the emotional heart of a [TS]

00:35:09   science movie i like that way night [TS]

00:35:11   Seinfeld's Newman thank you know if you [TS]

00:35:15   put a guy if you put a guy with a little [TS]

00:35:17   bit of a chunky guy if in the center of [TS]

00:35:20   a roll like that [TS]

00:35:21   now that's the thing you're going to [TS]

00:35:22   believe that a chunky guy's got heart [TS]

00:35:25   right you're gonna believe you don't [TS]

00:35:29   give that a guy like Matthew McConaughey [TS]

00:35:30   who who who appears to be carved out of [TS]

00:35:33   mahogany that guy's got no heart seems [TS]

00:35:36   like you want to do stuff to your [TS]

00:35:37   panties or maybe get into your bank [TS]

00:35:39   account [TS]

00:35:40   yeah you know what he wants to do he [TS]

00:35:41   wants to make some fish tacos and he [TS]

00:35:43   wants to go boogie board [TS]

00:35:45   he's a bad man that's what he wants he [TS]

00:35:47   does he wants to go he wants to have him [TS]

00:35:49   Sammy Hagar over they're gonna make some [TS]

00:35:51   fish tacos he's gonna make his famous [TS]

00:35:54   fucking salsa and then they're going to [TS]

00:35:57   go putting her it's pretty high [TS]

00:35:58   he's not he does not want to be the be [TS]

00:36:03   the emotional heart of the film you [TS]

00:36:05   don't believe it not for a second LTE [TS]

00:36:07   you consider a stretch role for him [TS]

00:36:09   anything where he's so so in that in [TS]

00:36:12   that TV show where he was playing [TS]

00:36:14   against the guy from cheers yeah sure [TS]

00:36:17   that was what he was very convincing in [TS]

00:36:20   that movie because he was a gacked out [TS]

00:36:23   like bad cop he was Abby was good at [TS]

00:36:27   like drug in laconic yeah he was a dumb [TS]

00:36:29   philosopher and that maybe with a lot of [TS]

00:36:31   dumb philosophy but it was exactly the [TS]

00:36:32   kind of dumb philosophy that I gacked [TS]

00:36:34   out cop would would spew right you [TS]

00:36:38   should be a consultant on this thing he [TS]

00:36:40   was not the chubby guy that should have [TS]

00:36:42   been at the center of both the be [TS]

00:36:44   science fiction movies that seinfeld [TS]

00:36:45   away night [TS]

00:36:46   well you know he's only have to be him [TS]

00:36:48   but maybe shave his head he might [TS]

00:36:50   likewise i would even by seth rogen in [TS]

00:36:52   those roles i think he'll I think just [TS]

00:36:53   for which were also nothing I don't mean [TS]

00:36:55   to go on a chubby thing here i think i [TS]

00:36:57   think one night lost a tremendous amount [TS]

00:36:59   of weight he had one of those two [TS]

00:37:00   transformative weight loss experiences [TS]

00:37:02   do you think that it was a do you think [TS]

00:37:03   he got a lap belt [TS]

00:37:04   oh that's what the dot leopard leopard a [TS]

00:37:07   gossipy thing [TS]

00:37:08   yeah I could be could be or they give [TS]

00:37:10   you the time tell me i think is John [TS]

00:37:12   he'll also had a big go weight loss [TS]

00:37:14   thing [TS]

00:37:14   oh I saw that but easy seems to begin [TS]

00:37:16   its hard the yo-yo thing is real you [TS]

00:37:18   know my mom believes that that people [TS]

00:37:21   who lose a lot of weight [TS]

00:37:22   uh by any method of exercise and and [TS]

00:37:27   diet she believes that those people will [TS]

00:37:31   always tell you what they did at always [TS]

00:37:36   so that someone who loses a lot of [TS]

00:37:38   weight sudden now who does not tell you [TS]

00:37:41   in exhaustive detail the method by which [TS]

00:37:45   they did it invariably have had some [TS]

00:37:48   kind of gastric bypass [TS]

00:37:50   oh you okay not that there's anything [TS]

00:37:53   wrong with that but there's [TS]

00:37:54   extraordinary medical surgical means [TS]

00:37:56   involved actually a commitment that she [TS]

00:37:59   believes she believes that that anyone [TS]

00:38:02   who has used a system of like changing [TS]

00:38:05   their diet and exercise is going to bore [TS]

00:38:07   the shit out of you about it it's almost [TS]

00:38:09   like if you had a bunch of people [TS]

00:38:11   sitting around left with four people [TS]

00:38:13   sitting around the room for any gender [TS]

00:38:15   really like anybody and like one person [TS]

00:38:19   starts talking about their kids another [TS]

00:38:21   person starts talking about their kids [TS]

00:38:22   are you talking about and just talk [TS]

00:38:23   about how their kid used to be adorable [TS]

00:38:25   and is now I dick mean the second one [TS]

00:38:27   comes in third one comes in EM there's a [TS]

00:38:29   pretty good chance if you had a kid [TS]

00:38:31   well let's be honest they probably [TS]

00:38:32   turned out to be a dick you're gonna [TS]

00:38:34   jump into that conversation the only [TS]

00:38:35   people who don't jump into that [TS]

00:38:36   conversation or someone who doesn't have [TS]

00:38:38   a kid god bless them and goes and goes [TS]

00:38:39   how that's really it sounds like a pain [TS]

00:38:41   right thing here if you've done [TS]

00:38:43   something people are proud of what [TS]

00:38:44   they've done and you know and especially [TS]

00:38:46   with the things like pregnancy or weight [TS]

00:38:47   loss or you know AAA or whatever he's [TS]

00:38:51   there are people who are going to give [TS]

00:38:52   you they've got their story I try very [TS]

00:38:54   hard not to talk about my diet and I [TS]

00:38:57   cannot help [TS]

00:38:59   oh I cannot help but not talk about it [TS]

00:39:02   because as soon as somebody like so many [TS]

00:39:04   things I swore to myself I would never [TS]

00:39:06   ever do nothing to feel bad about it [TS]

00:39:08   that's the second part that's the [TS]

00:39:09   painful part is it doesn't bother me it [TS]

00:39:11   doesn't really talk about my bowel [TS]

00:39:12   movements and cassette tapes two years [TS]

00:39:15   ago when somebody was talking about how [TS]

00:39:16   they were gluten [TS]

00:39:17   yeah I was like oh my god you're so [TS]

00:39:19   boring stop it stop talking and then [TS]

00:39:23   when I went gluten-free I was like well [TS]

00:39:25   you know I went gluten-free recently and [TS]

00:39:27   lot of water supply and I was so proud [TS]

00:39:28   of myself and I had completely forgotten [TS]

00:39:31   completely blocked out that i had [TS]

00:39:33   formerly found at people like that [TS]

00:39:36   boring so anyway that is that that's [TS]

00:39:39   that's my mom's theory but my mom has a [TS]

00:39:41   lot of theories have to take them all [TS]

00:39:43   the grain of salt [TS]

00:39:45   yeah but in the aggregate she's right a [TS]

00:39:46   lot of the time I don't have a dog in [TS]

00:39:48   this fight [TS]

00:39:48   thank you think she is did you ever talk [TS]

00:39:50   about there's one episode of this [TS]

00:39:51   american life called the seven things [TS]

00:39:52   you're not supposed to talk about [TS]

00:39:53   everyone was that one here we talked [TS]

00:39:55   about that no I think that might've been [TS]

00:39:56   one of your other programs yeah but I [TS]

00:39:59   want to find me the it's basically that [TS]

00:40:04   the notion the show it's kind of a silly [TS]

00:40:05   idea but the idea is Sarah cainnic I [TS]

00:40:07   went on to do Dean being being being [TS]

00:40:09   cereal her mother i believe it's her [TS]

00:40:12   mother is has this list of seven topics [TS]

00:40:15   no one should ever talk about [TS]

00:40:16   oh and they are you get this right [TS]

00:40:19   you're period what your diet and what [TS]

00:40:22   you eat your health in general [TS]

00:40:24   yeah i was just doing some tennis club [TS]

00:40:28   rules ok here we go keep going lost [TS]

00:40:29   three tennis balls [TS]

00:40:30   I don't just toss these out so wait [TS]

00:40:32   let's go back to get pot we gotta get [TS]

00:40:34   your period we got a diet number four we [TS]

00:40:39   have Sleep Number five your dreams [TS]

00:40:43   oh don't talk about your dreams but [TS]

00:40:45   don't talk about sleep either huh i'm [TS]

00:40:47   just getting there [TS]

00:40:48   I love this one number six I love number [TS]

00:40:49   6 root talk what's that how you got [TS]

00:40:53   there [TS]

00:40:53   oh man we were gonna take 280 but then [TS]

00:40:57   it turned out there is a we have to take [TS]

00:40:58   a cut over and go down the 1010 you just [TS]

00:41:01   took that you just took away eighty [TS]

00:41:02   percent well when I talk about I know [TS]

00:41:04   exactly but but you know I think those [TS]

00:41:06   are the I'm just I'm just saying that if [TS]

00:41:08   we don't have these things to talk about [TS]

00:41:09   nothing i agree with this but that [TS]

00:41:11   sounds like all stuff that like if we [TS]

00:41:13   didn't have those things to talk about [TS]

00:41:15   it how your kids eventually become dicks [TS]

00:41:16   there would be no much to talk about if [TS]

00:41:18   you don't you know what for me diet and [TS]

00:41:19   sleep like right about that and sleep [TS]

00:41:22   when i'm going to say at this point that [TS]

00:41:23   when someone is introduced into our [TS]

00:41:25   family you know when somebody like gets [TS]

00:41:27   to be friends with the with the [TS]

00:41:29   Roderick's [TS]

00:41:30   one of the one of the things that they [TS]

00:41:32   have to sort of a custom themselves to [TS]

00:41:35   is that any time my mom and i arrived at [TS]

00:41:39   a place or depart we're going to spend [TS]

00:41:41   two minutes talking about the route but [TS]

00:41:45   you know she's like okay I'm taking off [TS]

00:41:47   and going a little bit right it's where [TS]

00:41:48   you going and she goes on you haven't [TS]

00:41:50   done that then it and if we're both in [TS]

00:41:52   one location and we're going to a [TS]

00:41:53   separate location we will absolutely [TS]

00:41:54   take different routes and compare and [TS]

00:41:58   deaf and we're very interested in who [TS]

00:42:00   gets to the place where I think it [TS]

00:42:03   varies i think it varies a great deal [TS]

00:42:05   especially as people get older and you [TS]

00:42:07   can compare and contrast your different [TS]

00:42:09   dietary problems and also just like to [TS]

00:42:10   say if anybody out there's any producers [TS]

00:42:12   I i would like to see a cable reality [TS]

00:42:15   show called getting to be friends with [TS]

00:42:17   Roderick's haha very it would be a 10 [TS]

00:42:22   season show at the end maybe you'll be [TS]

00:42:24   friends now I could be like things that [TS]

00:42:26   could be a contest though it could be an [TS]

00:42:28   elimination thing right could be like a [TS]

00:42:30   hidden-camera you know as he has more [TS]

00:42:32   and kind of thing at the end of every [TS]

00:42:33   episode [TS]

00:42:34   my mom and I would sit down and be like [TS]

00:42:35   I kind of like this one and she'd be [TS]

00:42:37   like mm no be nice if you left now up [TS]

00:42:42   um I went skiing this past weekend on [TS]

00:42:48   hill i went scheme for the first time in [TS]

00:42:52   a long long time [TS]

00:42:55   uh probably well the first time in many [TS]

00:42:59   years I went skiing in this yeast in [TS]

00:43:01   your family [TS]

00:43:02   this was a thing yep just like a [TS]

00:43:05   big-time skier right well I was too we [TS]

00:43:08   were that's right yeah you said that [TS]

00:43:09   yeah and and it was really it was very [TS]

00:43:12   it was very weird a melon [TS]

00:43:17   because it's a thing that I haven't done [TS]

00:43:22   in a lot in a long time and it probably [TS]

00:43:25   in the last 20 years I've done three [TS]

00:43:29   times but it's a thing that I know how [TS]

00:43:33   to do really well I'll you still have it [TS]

00:43:38   is like a ride a bike as they say oh [TS]

00:43:40   yeah because between the ages of 8 and [TS]

00:43:43   23 i skied constantly i raced I train [TS]

00:43:50   mostly in Alaska it but I was i skied in [TS]

00:43:54   college too but you know in the summer i [TS]

00:43:57   trained i would late we would we would [TS]

00:44:00   go for a long run and then we would lay [TS]

00:44:02   down in the park and our coach would [TS]

00:44:04   walk around we all be laying on the [TS]

00:44:06   grass with our eyes closed and our coach [TS]

00:44:07   would walk around between us really [TS]

00:44:09   slowly [TS]

00:44:10   this is on a beautiful sunny summer day [TS]

00:44:12   and in Alaska and he'd be like you're at [TS]

00:44:15   the top of the course and you're you're [TS]

00:44:18   checking your bindings and and then you [TS]

00:44:20   hear that you hear the buzzer babe [TS]

00:44:22   Bam Bam and then year then you're out [TS]

00:44:25   you're on the course and you're making [TS]

00:44:26   that first turn and you're just carving [TS]

00:44:28   perfectly visualizations and we would [TS]

00:44:30   sit and lay in the park while he would [TS]

00:44:32   he would visualize an entire slalom race [TS]

00:44:37   really even back then I mean I think [TS]

00:44:39   this is being a modern invention but [TS]

00:44:41   that you really get it back then 1980 [TS]

00:44:43   this is 84 probably well clean golfer [TS]

00:44:47   student exchange top don't call first do [TS]

00:44:48   that a lot too big they say like [TS]

00:44:50   visualizations like ninety percent or [TS]

00:44:51   something or forty percent or so yeah I [TS]

00:44:53   think it's a big sports thing and i [TS]

00:44:54   think i remember at the time being told [TS]

00:44:57   or feeling like this was really new and [TS]

00:44:59   really innovative and it was really [TS]

00:45:02   effective like you would lay there after [TS]

00:45:04   a long run you'll be like you know [TS]

00:45:06   feeling your body and the Sun is beating [TS]

00:45:09   down and you're thinking about this ski [TS]

00:45:11   race and you're imagining yourself just [TS]

00:45:14   skiing so well through this course and i [TS]

00:45:17   absolutely the following year during ski [TS]

00:45:21   season like at made a real leap [TS]

00:45:24   inability and had started to and i was i [TS]

00:45:27   I started winning races [TS]

00:45:30   I I got a couple of gold medals that's [TS]

00:45:32   amazing people were starting to talk [TS]

00:45:34   about me like I was a comer it all ended [TS]

00:45:38   badly but but it was a it was a it was a [TS]

00:45:44   big part of my teen life and and it's [TS]

00:45:50   not something I haven't done in years so [TS]

00:45:51   I so is it just on athletics it touches [TS]

00:45:54   on like social stuff right obviously [TS]

00:45:57   like people it's like a thing people [TS]

00:45:58   would do for fun I think people would do [TS]

00:46:01   for fun it's also a very expensive sport [TS]

00:46:03   so there's this other aspect of it where [TS]

00:46:07   it ties into it so it's a it's a very [TS]

00:46:11   class oriented thing like skiing is is [TS]

00:46:17   like horse it's like horse people right [TS]

00:46:19   you it's kinda like it is like golf in [TS]

00:46:22   in that sense right i mean where you've [TS]

00:46:23   got there's lots of ongoing expenses [TS]

00:46:25   there's lots of costly equipment you [TS]

00:46:27   could take lessons forever loon and and [TS]

00:46:29   like a lot of things that are tied to [TS]

00:46:31   social class there's the kind of [TS]

00:46:34   confusing a misattribution of like skill [TS]

00:46:40   in skiing that skill and skiing is is a [TS]

00:46:46   sign that you are a superior person kind [TS]

00:46:49   of you know like skill in golf or or or [TS]

00:46:52   tennis or horse riding a is a sign that [TS]

00:46:56   you are especially if you make it as [TS]

00:46:58   they say look easy right [TS]

00:47:00   that's a very high-status things it's [TS]

00:47:01   one thing to take a main classes and [TS]

00:47:03   everybody know it but people who can [TS]

00:47:05   cook in golf or ski or boat with [TS]

00:47:07   apparent ease i think that's super high [TS]

00:47:09   status [TS]

00:47:10   yeah it's there's a lot of status [TS]

00:47:12   involved but also for me like to be up [TS]

00:47:15   on the ski mountain but it's also a [TS]

00:47:18   solitary sport but it's a solitary sport [TS]

00:47:22   where as you're making a run you are [TS]

00:47:24   conscious of being visible to people [TS]

00:47:27   there are people standing all around the [TS]

00:47:29   ski hill watching uski there are people [TS]

00:47:31   up on the lift watching uski like [TS]

00:47:33   they're it's it is it's a solitary [TS]

00:47:34   performance of a kind of ballet if [TS]

00:47:37   you're skiing well [TS]

00:47:39   I because when i'm writing the lift or [TS]

00:47:42   standing on the side of the hill and [TS]

00:47:44   someone skis by and his skiing well i [TS]

00:47:47   will stop stop what I'm thinking and [TS]

00:47:50   watch them and admire them [TS]

00:47:51   it's a they're there every day and the [TS]

00:47:54   course of of being on a ski mountain [TS]

00:47:56   there are multiple times where you see [TS]

00:47:58   somebody and you just admire their [TS]

00:48:01   skiing and it's a form of love your [TS]

00:48:04   beauty know i-i-i don't feel that in [TS]

00:48:07   very many other things as much as I do [TS]

00:48:10   watching somebody do watching somebody [TS]

00:48:13   perform a sport that I know what it [TS]

00:48:15   feels like to do well [TS]

00:48:17   mhm and as I watch them do it well I [TS]

00:48:19   don't know them I don't know anything [TS]

00:48:21   about them but i'm watching them ski [TS]

00:48:22   well and I think I like this I like [TS]

00:48:24   watching this and so when you're skiing [TS]

00:48:27   you're also aware that like and ninety [TS]

00:48:29   percent of the people around on the ski [TS]

00:48:31   mountain are not watching you and don't [TS]

00:48:32   care and don't wouldn't recognize that [TS]

00:48:35   you were doing it well but there's this [TS]

00:48:38   small percentage of people on the lift [TS]

00:48:40   or on on the hill that you know that [TS]

00:48:43   you're aware of are going to recognize [TS]

00:48:45   that you are performing at a higher [TS]

00:48:47   level and they're gonna appreciate it [TS]

00:48:49   one way that it seems a little bit like [TS]

00:48:51   skateboarding even before there was [TS]

00:48:53   snowboarding right i mean in that sense [TS]

00:48:55   that you you would sit there and you [TS]

00:48:57   practice you do this thing all day long [TS]

00:48:58   over and over and over and when you see [TS]

00:49:00   somebody who's really capable of [TS]

00:49:01   something you know is extremely [TS]

00:49:02   difficult kind of can't help but stop to [TS]

00:49:04   admire them [TS]

00:49:05   that's right that's right and a lot of [TS]

00:49:06   things like I mean I millions of people [TS]

00:49:10   love watching basketball highlights [TS]

00:49:12   because there are these feats of [TS]

00:49:14   incredible athleticism that we all [TS]

00:49:17   recognized as a tremendous right but [TS]

00:49:21   very few of us can also play basketball [TS]

00:49:23   that well and imagine watching [TS]

00:49:26   basketball highlights if you were [TS]

00:49:28   somebody who was an incredible [TS]

00:49:30   basketball player i get that that's it [TS]

00:49:31   that's a great distinction its you can [TS]

00:49:33   you can appreciate just based on the [TS]

00:49:35   history of it but you've never actually [TS]

00:49:36   you know suck a 3-pointer yeah or like [TS]

00:49:40   jumped up and around the back of you [TS]

00:49:43   know jumped over somebody's head and and [TS]

00:49:45   dunk the basketball [TS]

00:49:46   and so I i was having this incredible [TS]

00:49:48   experience all weekend when I was like [TS]

00:49:50   it's this is one of the few things that [TS]

00:49:56   I am genuinely good at and there are [TS]

00:50:00   very few of those things right [TS]

00:50:01   I do not consider myself to be genuinely [TS]

00:50:04   good at playing guitar I am i'm good at [TS]

00:50:08   guitar impassable guitar but in a room [TS]

00:50:11   full of people that are great at guitar [TS]

00:50:13   you know nobody's gonna be like now [TS]

00:50:15   let's loss sit and watch Roderick right [TS]

00:50:18   I'm gonna kind of smile and make a joke [TS]

00:50:20   and play a joke solo I've heard you say [TS]

00:50:23   that a lot of a lot of time a lot of [TS]

00:50:24   places that you'd feel like you didn't [TS]

00:50:27   even get you always see to things that [TS]

00:50:30   you never you never really got bothered [TS]

00:50:34   to try and get good at guitar until [TS]

00:50:36   you're in your late twenties and even [TS]

00:50:38   then you're just as good as you need to [TS]

00:50:39   be to do what you want to do you never [TS]

00:50:41   saw it as this application to aspire to [TS]

00:50:43   greater and greater rock [TS]

00:50:45   yeah something like that yeah and and [TS]

00:50:47   part of it maybe is that a that skiing [TS]

00:50:51   is something that I started to do when i [TS]

00:50:52   was ten or or I'm sorry aight and I [TS]

00:50:56   didn't start playing guitar when I was [TS]

00:50:58   eight and I didn't start really i didn't [TS]

00:50:59   really do much else at eight [TS]

00:51:02   like I didn't get good at baseball I [TS]

00:51:04   didn't I wasn't good at Dungeons and [TS]

00:51:06   Dragons I wasn't good at all those [TS]

00:51:13   things that I wanted to do i I didn't [TS]

00:51:16   practice drawing i didn't i didn't get [TS]

00:51:21   the this I didn't develop a skill to [TS]

00:51:25   this to the degree that it was [TS]

00:51:27   unconscious but with skiing after not [TS]

00:51:31   having been in 10 years I get up on a [TS]

00:51:33   pair you know I go into the pro shop and [TS]

00:51:36   I'm like look I'm a 46 year old guy but [TS]

00:51:38   and I haven't been skiing in 10 years [TS]

00:51:40   but I'm gonna want your best gear and [TS]

00:51:44   they're like okay and they bring out the [TS]

00:51:48   they bring out this gear and they put it [TS]

00:51:49   out there and I'm like yeah no not not [TS]

00:51:51   this stuff I want that stuff you know [TS]

00:51:54   when I point up to the thing and they're [TS]

00:51:55   like okay man and they put me in this [TS]

00:51:58   stuff and I get up on the hill and I'm [TS]

00:52:02   as i'm writing the ski lift I'm like you [TS]

00:52:03   know this is pretty technical gear like [TS]

00:52:08   i hope that i'm not i hope i didn't [TS]

00:52:09   overestimate my need for it you know i [TS]

00:52:14   hope i don't get up there and penske has [TS]

00:52:16   changed so much and this year's so [TS]

00:52:17   radical that I'm gonna be just about 10 [TS]

00:52:23   years since i went last night and that [TS]

00:52:26   was the first time I'd gone in five [TS]

00:52:28   years and I went one day and then there [TS]

00:52:30   was I went one day five years before [TS]

00:52:33   that I would not be surprised if [TS]

00:52:34   adequate this really better [TS]

00:52:36   it's changed a lot but the art of skiing [TS]

00:52:39   hasn't changed and I got off the lift [TS]

00:52:41   and I made a couple of turns and I was [TS]

00:52:42   like all right this is the appropriate [TS]

00:52:43   gear and I understand how it works and [TS]

00:52:47   then the rest of the day I was just in [TS]

00:52:49   this place of a in this place of like [TS]

00:52:52   kind of training again where every turn [TS]

00:52:57   i made i was thinking about and I was [TS]

00:52:59   like that was a good turn and now we're [TS]

00:53:02   gonna set up the next turn and here we [TS]

00:53:04   go and then for the cardiovascular [TS]

00:53:06   standpoint you could do it seems very [TS]

00:53:08   athletic one so I was after the first [TS]

00:53:11   couple of runs i was super tired my legs [TS]

00:53:13   hurt everything about me her and and I [TS]

00:53:17   recognized a few things that I was 46 [TS]

00:53:20   and so I could not I could not get air [TS]

00:53:23   anymore I was not going to get I was not [TS]

00:53:25   gonna go off any jumps probably ever [TS]

00:53:27   again and there were you know in any [TS]

00:53:32   kind of skiing in any ski run where [TS]

00:53:35   you're really pushing yourself you're [TS]

00:53:38   going to arrive at a moment where you're [TS]

00:53:39   like okay I'm at the threshold now right [TS]

00:53:44   I'm on that I'm on the outside of my [TS]

00:53:47   ability and I think that's true of [TS]

00:53:50   anybody no matter how good they are if [TS]

00:53:52   they're pushing their envelope they get [TS]

00:53:55   to the edge of it it it seems like every [TS]

00:53:58   i always keep once when I was a kid very [TS]

00:54:00   young kid but like you with the way you [TS]

00:54:02   watching somebody doing the way you [TS]

00:54:03   described it really sounds like not only [TS]

00:54:05   is that true that you're always pushing [TS]

00:54:07   it but that you didn't need to push that [TS]

00:54:09   in a way you might not expect could come [TS]

00:54:11   up with like almost any second and that [TS]

00:54:13   could be something of meeting a certain [TS]

00:54:15   amount of velocity you didn't expect I [TS]

00:54:17   certainly imagine we talk about things [TS]

00:54:18   like even small just jumping around how [TS]

00:54:21   hard that must be on your joints but [TS]

00:54:23   then also just anything like one false [TS]

00:54:26   move and you're just gonna tear some [TS]

00:54:27   part of your body really really hard [TS]

00:54:29   right yeah you're going super fast down [TS]

00:54:32   a place and even if you are very [TS]

00:54:34   familiar with the terrain which like the [TS]

00:54:37   resort i grew up on I knew every inch of [TS]

00:54:39   it but even so every day is different [TS]

00:54:43   right because its nature and the weather [TS]

00:54:47   and the snow i mean it's always [TS]

00:54:48   different so an area that you know [TS]

00:54:50   really well you can come across it and [TS]

00:54:52   it's been this the situation has changed [TS]

00:54:54   completely [TS]

00:54:55   but as it was happening this past [TS]

00:54:57   weekend I was on completely unfamiliar [TS]

00:54:59   terrain and every time I came over arise [TS]

00:55:02   I had no idea what was on the other side [TS]

00:55:03   it could be a it could be a mile-long [TS]

00:55:05   groomed run or it could be a cliff into [TS]

00:55:10   a waterfall every time you know every [TS]

00:55:11   time you come over a a horizon and so [TS]

00:55:15   the other thing I being 46 really [TS]

00:55:19   pointed out to me was that i needed to i [TS]

00:55:23   needed to bring my the the edge of my [TS]

00:55:25   envelope in considerably because the [TS]

00:55:28   really the last time I skied very much [TS]

00:55:31   at all [TS]

00:55:32   I was still young enough that that that [TS]

00:55:36   the my boundaries were way way out [TS]

00:55:39   mhm and I needed to bring those weigh-in [TS]

00:55:43   and there were a couple of times on the [TS]

00:55:44   hill where I was standing on the edge of [TS]

00:55:45   some double black diamond run and [TS]

00:55:48   looking down and like is this doable yes [TS]

00:55:50   should i do it [TS]

00:55:54   no I should not I should not do this [TS]

00:55:57   because I can do it but I don't need to [TS]

00:56:02   prove that and I and the risk of of [TS]

00:56:08   doing this and and making even just a [TS]

00:56:10   normal error is that i will hurt myself [TS]

00:56:13   and then then today will be [TS]

00:56:16   characterized by my injury rather than [TS]

00:56:19   by the fact that I'm having a really fun [TS]

00:56:20   time [TS]

00:56:21   yeah and so that was it that was new to [TS]

00:56:23   me I'd never I'd never stood at the top [TS]

00:56:25   of a run before and look down and said [TS]

00:56:27   can I yes should I know and I did that a [TS]

00:56:30   few times and I was I was pretty proud [TS]

00:56:33   of that I think that's pretty smart [TS]

00:56:34   child is as good as you may still be [TS]

00:56:37   like it's just the stakes are higher [TS]

00:56:39   oh I'm old I mean I you know and and [TS]

00:56:41   what was great was feeling like feeling [TS]

00:56:44   after a couple of runs that i was so [TS]

00:56:46   tired that maybe I had made a terrible [TS]

00:56:49   mistake in buying an all-day pass maybe [TS]

00:56:53   I should go down and take a bath and and [TS]

00:56:57   then skiing through that pain and [TS]

00:57:00   loosening up and getting my you know and [TS]

00:57:04   and finding reserves of strength and by [TS]

00:57:06   the end you know and then i skied until [TS]

00:57:08   the last run and was was sad too sad [TS]

00:57:12   that they didn't have night skiing you [TS]

00:57:14   know but it was very weird to feel like [TS]

00:57:18   this was a thing that I then I I know [TS]

00:57:21   how to do and then I think that is such [TS]

00:57:24   a big part of my life really and i have [TS]

00:57:27   chosen not to do it for 20 years for [TS]

00:57:30   reasons that are all about [TS]

00:57:33   well it's really expensive and it's kind [TS]

00:57:35   of paint has to get up there so anyway [TS]

00:57:37   it's better you know what I I'm gonna go [TS]

00:57:40   to the cafe this morning and read the [TS]

00:57:42   newspaper instead and everyday sort of [TS]

00:57:45   making that decision for 20 years and [TS]

00:57:48   and leaving this side of me where I [TS]

00:57:53   actually know how to do something that's [TS]

00:57:55   really gratifying that's physical and [TS]

00:57:57   that's in this other realm and I just I [TS]

00:58:01   just don't [TS]

00:58:02   it's not a part of my life who and it [TS]

00:58:05   was it was aight i'm still kind of like [TS]

00:58:08   grappling with it [TS]

00:58:10   grappling with how it how it how it is [TS]

00:58:16   that i could go so that i could go year [TS]

00:58:19   after year and not even want to do it [TS]

00:58:21   once or [TS]

00:58:22   want to do it but never have that desire [TS]

00:58:25   to do it be enough to like overcome the [TS]

00:58:29   inertia of of sitting around [TS]

00:58:36   I mean doesn't question kinda sorta [TS]

00:58:38   answer itself which was that you just [TS]

00:58:40   you hadn't having not done so long i [TS]

00:58:42   guess the question some ways like when [TS]

00:58:44   do you start to not do something when [TS]

00:58:46   does it start to count as you're not [TS]

00:58:47   doing something cuz then once you did [TS]

00:58:48   you were like oh this is great huh [TS]

00:58:50   but like it used to be a huge part of [TS]

00:58:51   your life so it seems strange that you [TS]

00:58:53   didn't at least kind of check back in [TS]

00:58:54   with it [TS]

00:58:55   well yeah I mean it was a butt but it's [TS]

00:58:57   sort of related to you know it's related [TS]

00:59:00   to my well it's a relationship to action [TS]

00:59:03   right if you like when I talk about this [TS]

00:59:07   a lot i'll be on the freeway and AG i'll [TS]

00:59:09   drive by me in a truck and he's pulling [TS]

00:59:11   a trailer and it's got two snowmobiles [TS]

00:59:13   and to dirt bikes and and and a boat all [TS]

00:59:17   on the same trailer right and he's [TS]

00:59:19   pulling this thing up into the siskiyou [TS]

00:59:21   use and you just know that this guy's [TS]

00:59:25   and his whole family's in the truck and [TS]

00:59:28   he's got a cabin up there somewhere and [TS]

00:59:31   he lives for this [TS]

00:59:33   he's we work for his he works at his job [TS]

00:59:35   but he's always thinking about getting [TS]

00:59:37   up to the lake and you know my dad was [TS]

00:59:41   like that with his freaking airplane his [TS]

00:59:43   goddamn fuckin 182 and he just poured [TS]

00:59:47   money into it and he every time the sun [TS]

00:59:50   came out he's down at the airport [TS]

00:59:52   monkeying with his airplane and you know [TS]

00:59:56   every spare minute he's like let's go [TS]

00:59:58   let's let's get a hamburger up [TS]

00:59:58   let's let's get a hamburger up [TS]

01:00:00   talking now let's fly up to nil chick [TS]

01:00:02   and and then you're you know and then [TS]

01:00:05   anything he would we get in the plane [TS]

01:00:08   and he'd have his sunglasses on [TS]

01:00:10   he'd have his reading glasses on top of [TS]

01:00:12   his head because he needed them to where [TS]

01:00:13   to look at maps and then he had a third [TS]

01:00:16   pair of glasses on top of that to see [TS]

01:00:18   long-distance had like three pairs of [TS]

01:00:21   glasses on at all times when he's in his [TS]

01:00:23   plan and work when we're puttering along [TS]

01:00:25   and I'm looking out the window and I'm [TS]

01:00:26   like you know this is a this is another [TS]

01:00:28   thing I was raised doing right if that [TS]

01:00:30   if you put me behind that if you put me [TS]

01:00:32   in a 182 and said fly me somewhere I [TS]

01:00:34   could i do it without thinking but it [TS]

01:00:38   has never it never has interested me to [TS]

01:00:41   have a habit of jet ski or a lake cabin [TS]

01:00:48   or an hour a small plane because i have [TS]

01:00:51   a different kind of relationship to [TS]

01:00:53   action [TS]

01:00:54   I don't care about action in a in a in a [TS]

01:00:58   week in a way we do you do care about [TS]

01:01:01   action [TS]

01:01:02   I'm not sure I understand the question [TS]

01:01:05   I don't think how do you mean I mean [TS]

01:01:10   what I had to do with the guy with the [TS]

01:01:11   jet skis [TS]

01:01:12   I mean the guy with the jet skis is [TS]

01:01:18   making such a personal investment right [TS]

01:01:20   right [TS]

01:01:21   he's such he's so its console costly to [TS]

01:01:25   have that fun and that's what it always [TS]

01:01:28   seems like to me like it seems like the [TS]

01:01:30   kids a cost-benefit analysis I guess [TS]

01:01:32   oh yeah sure and especially when you [TS]

01:01:34   take into account the time the time and [TS]

01:01:36   the and the getting up early and the [TS]

01:01:38   just the gasoline [TS]

01:01:41   I think everybody has such interesting [TS]

01:01:45   differences and what they gravitate [TS]

01:01:46   towards in terms of which you can very [TS]

01:01:48   loosely call hobby [TS]

01:01:49   yeah because there are so many the way I [TS]

01:01:52   look at it anyway and every edit you [TS]

01:01:54   just talked about in passing or [TS]

01:01:55   in-person reflects the many vectors to [TS]

01:01:58   that because you have things like should [TS]

01:02:01   this be a largely practical thing or do [TS]

01:02:03   I kind of like the fact that it's [TS]

01:02:05   frivolous it for if you like or if it's [TS]

01:02:08   something something that is you know [TS]

01:02:09   doesn't have a practical purpose [TS]

01:02:11   some people like making furniture cuz [TS]

01:02:13   then [TS]

01:02:13   they can make beautiful furniture and [TS]

01:02:15   give it away you know some people like [TS]

01:02:16   the fact that they're building something [TS]

01:02:17   on a minecraft server that's just for [TS]

01:02:19   fun [TS]

01:02:20   is it something where I really want this [TS]

01:02:24   way how much it does doing this expose [TS]

01:02:27   me to other people and how do I feel [TS]

01:02:29   about that because I really think a big [TS]

01:02:31   part especially historically men's [TS]

01:02:32   hobbies is there's the one kind where [TS]

01:02:34   you hang out with other people and [TS]

01:02:36   there's the other kind where you kind of [TS]

01:02:37   have to be left alone [TS]

01:02:39   I think those knocked her into it I'm [TS]

01:02:41   and I mean I can go on there's things [TS]

01:02:43   like I think there is an element I don't [TS]

01:02:45   know not in the people that I like I [TS]

01:02:46   hope this isn't always an element but [TS]

01:02:47   there is the element then of conspicuous [TS]

01:02:49   consumption like do I want to have three [TS]

01:02:52   boats or do i want to have in that guys [TS]

01:02:54   Casey's he's a little over transported [TS]

01:02:56   in terms of the number of things he has [TS]

01:02:57   but and then there's just stuff like in [TS]

01:02:59   my family I think about how much the men [TS]

01:03:01   love and my uncle my uncle my father me [TS]

01:03:06   just so many people on and and I don't [TS]

01:03:09   need to just talk about man but I think [TS]

01:03:10   that's kind of the direction we're [TS]

01:03:11   talking about here enjoy the [TS]

01:03:13   paraphernalia of the hobby which could [TS]

01:03:17   be stuff like reading magazines it could [TS]

01:03:18   be things like going to the bike shop to [TS]

01:03:21   look at wrenches or whatever and then [TS]

01:03:24   you get into stuff like I guess this is [TS]

01:03:25   kind of the social thing but shoptalk [TS]

01:03:28   like getting the chance to go fly out to [TS]

01:03:30   the guy who fixes your dad's plane and [TS]

01:03:31   shoot the shit with himself and i don't [TS]

01:03:33   know i think every one of those is so [TS]

01:03:35   different and it could be something like [TS]

01:03:36   could be me read a comic book myself at [TS]

01:03:39   midnight or it could be you you know [TS]

01:03:42   arranging the ski trip [TS]

01:03:43   that's more money than you would [TS]

01:03:44   normally pay and like what makes [TS]

01:03:46   somebody find that attractive let alone [TS]

01:03:49   real relaxing is is so different like [TS]

01:03:52   the idea of going skiing to me is not [TS]

01:03:53   appealing nothing it's bad but that's [TS]

01:03:56   very much not something that I would go [TS]

01:03:58   out of my way to do because it'll take [TS]

01:04:00   my doesn't take my boxes has no [TS]

01:04:02   practical application well you even [TS]

01:04:04   still just like a little brother was [TS]

01:04:05   trying to say that all these things men [TS]

01:04:07   women and children whoever there's [TS]

01:04:10   something that feels a little part of [TS]

01:04:12   your personality what the nice thing [TS]

01:04:13   about a hobby if you want to call it [TS]

01:04:15   that it's kind of like this spring spray [TS]

01:04:17   foam insulation you can shoot in your [TS]

01:04:19   life that fills this important part that [TS]

01:04:21   needs to be filled in for some people [TS]

01:04:23   that's the social social part for other [TS]

01:04:24   people's like I just need to be left [TS]

01:04:25   alone for [TS]

01:04:26   hours a week mowing the lawn great [TS]

01:04:27   chance to listen to podcast and not talk [TS]

01:04:29   to anybody you know I was that responds [TS]

01:04:32   really what you're saying but I think [TS]

01:04:34   that part partly explains you had a lot [TS]

01:04:36   of your social intercourse coming from [TS]

01:04:37   rock and roll for a long time and you [TS]

01:04:39   know I mean I'm not trying to say [TS]

01:04:40   there's like a one-to-one explanation [TS]

01:04:42   but like I think it's actually sadly [TS]

01:04:45   easy to understand why we fall out of [TS]

01:04:47   things like that over time because other [TS]

01:04:49   stuff takes its place and then the [TS]

01:04:50   inertia [TS]

01:04:51   now favors the new things you're doing [TS]

01:04:52   rather than the old thing which is [TS]

01:04:54   admittedly an expensive pain-in-the-ass [TS]

01:04:56   I was what i was driving in and I was [TS]

01:04:58   driving past the railroad which is how I [TS]

01:05:01   get here every day I Drive past around [TS]

01:05:03   and look at the railroad and today I was [TS]

01:05:06   like railroad right the railroad it's so [TS]

01:05:12   it would be it would have been to me so [TS]

01:05:17   easy to talk about multiverses like [TS]

01:05:21   there's a version of me that this is [TS]

01:05:24   your sliding doors good one yeah and [TS]

01:05:26   she's gonna make a difference [TS]

01:05:27   yeah there's a version of me that just [TS]

01:05:29   stayed in the ski resort town where I [TS]

01:05:30   grew up and is still there [TS]

01:05:32   there are dudes like that in every I [TS]

01:05:33   mean I brought up the lift with the guys [TS]

01:05:35   like i've been i've been at whistler for [TS]

01:05:37   32 years I was like right I could have [TS]

01:05:40   been incurred for 32 years and that [TS]

01:05:44   would have died like that's an [TS]

01:05:45   interesting version of me [TS]

01:05:47   the one that stayed in Girdwood but [TS]

01:05:48   there was there was a there is a version [TS]

01:05:50   of me that really wanted to work for the [TS]

01:05:52   railroad [TS]

01:05:53   oh really yeah i mean look at the ski [TS]

01:05:57   resort has a young adult as a kid in a [TS]

01:06:00   unit okay like that i get i'm getting [TS]

01:06:02   fire we drive around the Truman car I [TS]

01:06:04   mean that sounds pretty fun pretty fun [TS]

01:06:07   but like as when i was a kid looking at [TS]

01:06:09   the future i really wanted to be a ski [TS]

01:06:11   lift operator that seems like a great [TS]

01:06:13   job and I wanted to be a so many jobs at [TS]

01:06:18   the resort i wanted to be the the person [TS]

01:06:20   that I want to be on the ski patrol I [TS]

01:06:24   wanted to be one of those people that [TS]

01:06:26   walks around the resort with a [TS]

01:06:27   walkie-talkie and a baseball hat and is [TS]

01:06:30   like taking care of business at the [TS]

01:06:31   resort you know and and that was a thing [TS]

01:06:34   I could have I could have pursued that [TS]

01:06:35   job I never ended up having a job at the [TS]

01:06:37   resort but my sister worked at the [TS]

01:06:39   resort for years [TS]

01:06:40   and but then with the railroad like to [TS]

01:06:44   be I I was friends with the guy who was [TS]

01:06:46   a conductor I bet this was a grunt rock [TS]

01:06:48   friend of mine and he was one of those [TS]

01:06:50   grunge rock people that had a straight [TS]

01:06:52   job that was kind of fascinating i mean [TS]

01:06:56   most rock-and-roll people have a [TS]

01:06:57   straight job that's not fascinating your [TS]

01:06:59   part bartender somewhere in order to [TS]

01:07:02   make it go [TS]

01:07:02   you kind of have to have something [TS]

01:07:03   uneventful that yeah but is this guy had [TS]

01:07:06   he his job was that he had started as a [TS]

01:07:08   brakeman working for Amtrak and it [TS]

01:07:11   worked his way up by the time he was 30 [TS]

01:07:13   years old to like conductor on routes [TS]

01:07:17   leaving seattle and he had one of those [TS]

01:07:19   jobs like being on an airline pilot [TS]

01:07:21   where you worked you were on two days [TS]

01:07:23   off three or something and then he did [TS]

01:07:26   the most amazing thing I was pretty good [TS]

01:07:29   friends with them at this time and I [TS]

01:07:32   understood enough about railroad culture [TS]

01:07:35   to know that there are two separate [TS]

01:07:39   tracks you are on the conductor track or [TS]

01:07:41   you are on the engineer track and [TS]

01:07:44   there's no crossover if you're on the [TS]

01:07:47   engineer track you start at the bottom [TS]

01:07:49   and work your way up and you're an [TS]

01:07:51   engineer and if you're on the conductor [TS]

01:07:52   track you become a conductor but that [TS]

01:07:54   you're different worlds and he got to be [TS]

01:07:56   a conductor and gave it all away and [TS]

01:08:00   started as started to as an apprentice [TS]

01:08:02   in on the engineer track started over 30 [TS]

01:08:06   years old because he wanted to be up in [TS]

01:08:10   that engine on those three day trips [TS]

01:08:14   across the plains whatever end and he [TS]

01:08:18   has sent sort of disappeared from my [TS]

01:08:19   life he he became an engineer and and [TS]

01:08:24   literally drove that train high on [TS]

01:08:27   cocaine now [TS]

01:08:29   probably not yeah but like a you know [TS]

01:08:32   drove that train off into the tunnel of [TS]

01:08:35   of the future and watching those trains [TS]

01:08:39   this morning I was like wow what if i [TS]

01:08:41   just got to work for the railroad like [TS]

01:08:43   it's so elegant their tracks literally [TS]

01:08:48   you're on a track [TS]

01:08:50   you don't have to worry about if you're [TS]

01:08:52   on the right track [TS]

01:08:53   you are on the right track or you're on [TS]

01:08:58   the wrong track and that's terrible you [TS]

01:08:59   you're gonna figure that out pretty fast [TS]

01:09:01   too [TS]

01:09:01   [Music] [TS]

01:09:03   yeah we all learned about this thing so [TS]

01:09:05   that's a particularly interesting one [TS]

01:09:06   I mean I guess there's world where I was [TS]

01:09:08   playing still playing any rocker being a [TS]

01:09:10   waiter but i like the idea of the the [TS]

01:09:11   the train thing but what other than [TS]

01:09:14   playing indie-rock what was what was [TS]

01:09:16   that what was the fantasy job that you [TS]

01:09:18   had that like you think back and go what [TS]

01:09:21   if I had been a hot air balloon [TS]

01:09:25   well I mean the ones that were there [TS]

01:09:29   called the world's supply / surprisingly [TS]

01:09:30   in reach because I i did I wanted to be [TS]

01:09:35   a writer i wanted to do design of [TS]

01:09:38   different kinds and i think at the time [TS]

01:09:39   I maybe in retrospect it's kind of [TS]

01:09:42   surprising how much more in reach these [TS]

01:09:44   things were than I expected [TS]

01:09:46   I never in the modern age had anything [TS]

01:09:49   like I want to be a baseball player or [TS]

01:09:52   anything like that but i don't know i [TS]

01:09:55   don't know it's strange though because [TS]

01:09:57   there's a funny thing that happens I [TS]

01:09:58   think you kind of address in the past [TS]

01:10:00   but it's kind of funny were like you [TS]

01:10:01   watch somebody for a while you watch the [TS]

01:10:03   doing you turn away from me you come [TS]

01:10:04   back you're like whoa that guy's an [TS]

01:10:05   engineer on the road now or whatever you [TS]

01:10:08   discover these people who have been like [TS]

01:10:09   quietly building this super interesting [TS]

01:10:11   career and you kind of never noticed it [TS]

01:10:13   because they were doing something else [TS]

01:10:14   or you're you're more focused on there [TS]

01:10:16   maybe the music part contains certain [TS]

01:10:17   point but i think people are are are are [TS]

01:10:19   super interesting and of course as [TS]

01:10:21   always I'm very envious in a weird way [TS]

01:10:23   of people who join the army when they're [TS]

01:10:26   young [TS]

01:10:26   oh god so my i have but all of this I [TS]

01:10:29   feel like comes back to the fact that i [TS]

01:10:31   can i am i'm still just now even just [TS]

01:10:35   now grappling with the fact that that i [TS]

01:10:38   do not have access to a multiverse right [TS]

01:10:41   like I'm not even get like the [TS]

01:10:43   newsletter [TS]

01:10:44   I've always lived I lived my whole life [TS]

01:10:46   as though them as though the the [TS]

01:10:50   multiverse a like exchange station was [TS]

01:10:55   going to be open to me and i was going [TS]

01:10:56   to be able to walk in and say now I'd [TS]

01:10:58   like to be an army man for 25 years I [TS]

01:11:00   think that's probably less silly [TS]

01:11:02   sounding then you realize because I bet [TS]

01:11:05   that's true [TS]

01:11:06   because no because I mean it pulls [TS]

01:11:09   together several threads about your life [TS]

01:11:12   and your self assessment that I find [TS]

01:11:14   very interesting I mean one of them [TS]

01:11:15   being that you are in some ways more [TS]

01:11:18   interested in breadth and depth you'd [TS]

01:11:19   like to learn a little bit about many [TS]

01:11:21   many things I think that kind of matches [TS]

01:11:23   up with that it matches up with the way [TS]

01:11:26   that you know life kind of pinballs us [TS]

01:11:27   around and we end up going into this [TS]

01:11:29   place we never expected and wasn't that [TS]

01:11:31   interesting thought it would be nice to [TS]

01:11:33   have a little view into what that would [TS]

01:11:34   have turned out to be [TS]

01:11:36   that's a scary idea right i mean i and [TS]

01:11:38   and part of that is that I I'm more [TS]

01:11:40   interested in breadth and depth but now [TS]

01:11:42   now that is why i put that kind of like [TS]

01:11:44   no I think that's I think that's [TS]

01:11:46   generally true but now that we're in our [TS]

01:11:48   forties and we see all these people that [TS]

01:11:50   have tremendous step [TS]

01:11:51   yeah i would really like a breath of [TS]

01:11:53   depth oh brother I'm not yeah i mean i [TS]

01:11:56   don't know mostly I i have to deal with [TS]

01:11:59   other adults because i have a child and [TS]

01:12:01   select the parents of other kids over [TS]

01:12:04   there they feel terrible about my life [TS]

01:12:06   there's one guy who's a scientist and [TS]

01:12:09   he's not just a scientist he's a [TS]

01:12:10   biologist he's not justify it he works [TS]

01:12:12   on a very very specific kind of frog he [TS]

01:12:15   does very specific frog work and he [TS]

01:12:17   loved that he's like the go-to guy for [TS]

01:12:19   that kind of frog [TS]

01:12:20   yeah oh yeah yeah and I got ya I don't [TS]

01:12:23   want to know it but i guess for the envy [TS]

01:12:25   that [TS]

01:12:25   yeah yeah well that's and that is B [TS]

01:12:28   that's the Matthew McConaughey in a [TS]

01:12:31   contact problem to bring it around which [TS]

01:12:35   is that part of what made that role so [TS]

01:12:37   infuriating is that he is this person [TS]

01:12:40   with this like this sort of global [TS]

01:12:44   religious wisdom but he's like a young [TS]

01:12:48   surfer asshole [TS]

01:12:50   mm and that fantasy that you would be [TS]

01:12:55   that you would be young and yet already [TS]

01:12:59   be this is the thing that Hollywood does [TS]

01:13:01   to us all the time like oh here comes [TS]

01:13:03   the world expert on frogs and it turns [TS]

01:13:05   out it's a 24 year-old actress right i [TS]

01:13:09   mean we see if it's the james bond can [TS]

01:13:11   be the key honorees movie with the with [TS]

01:13:13   the dolphins [TS]

01:13:14   Johnny mnemonic no I didn't see it well [TS]

01:13:17   I mean it'sit's this and this is I don't [TS]

01:13:19   mean this [TS]

01:13:20   sounds quite the way it sounds but you [TS]

01:13:21   know there's a lot of incredibly [TS]

01:13:23   talented men and women out there playing [TS]

01:13:24   many roles but there used to be a thing [TS]

01:13:26   I think especially in the nineties of [TS]

01:13:28   taking a certain kind of very attractive [TS]

01:13:31   young actress and trying to sell her as [TS]

01:13:33   a as like the science person and it's I [TS]

01:13:38   won't even always say was the actress i [TS]

01:13:39   think a lot of it was the material [TS]

01:13:41   wasn't up to it and so you end up [TS]

01:13:42   everybody sounds silly and that was like [TS]

01:13:45   such a thing for a while just in this [TS]

01:13:46   case it's matthew mcconaughey who's the [TS]

01:13:48   young woman was that Timothy Dalton [TS]

01:13:50   movie where Timothy Dalton James Bond [TS]

01:13:53   where the hour without ya get the girl [TS]

01:13:56   with the eyes from the movie you have a [TS]

01:13:57   galaxy note she's she's the one with the [TS]

01:13:59   nose from starship troopers yes and I [TS]

01:14:02   know exactly who you mean and she says [TS]

01:14:04   she's she's like the the China [TS]

01:14:07   torrington or something you have that [TS]

01:14:09   all known scientist but she's a [TS]

01:14:11   scientist or a nuclear of prison system [TS]

01:14:13   sometimes denise richards ah who who was [TS]

01:14:18   who a very very very handsome woman but [TS]

01:14:21   she was a yeah she was like a national [TS]

01:14:24   lab coat John she may have had a lab [TS]

01:14:27   coat I'm trying to think wasn't she [TS]

01:14:29   married to the guy from two and a half [TS]

01:14:30   men think she was married to Charlie [TS]

01:14:32   Sheen yeah Charlie Sheen everybody was a [TS]

01:14:34   tiger and anyway yeah her her roll her [TS]

01:14:38   commanding role as like the super [TS]

01:14:40   scientist in that james bond movie was I [TS]

01:14:43   think the that was the example that was [TS]

01:14:45   the peak moment that's about a big peak [TS]

01:14:47   wow really this is the this is the one [TS]

01:14:49   this is the butt but I feel like this I [TS]

01:14:52   feel I felt like in a way that sneaks [TS]

01:14:55   into all of our minds and we all have [TS]

01:14:56   this this idea that like well there are [TS]

01:14:59   some twenty-five-year-old super [TS]

01:15:01   scientist who also happen to be models [TS]

01:15:04   and surfers and uh and so I'm comparing [TS]

01:15:07   myself against them somewhat but at this [TS]

01:15:10   point in my life I'm not the expert on [TS]

01:15:11   the frogs yeah and that and being and so [TS]

01:15:15   it that such as it's so seductive [TS]

01:15:18   can you imagine like what do i do i do [TS]

01:15:21   this frog what what am i doing tomorrow [TS]

01:15:24   this frog what a what am I going to be [TS]

01:15:26   remembered for this frog I know [TS]

01:15:27   everything about this from gonna be easy [TS]

01:15:30   to explain but it is simple to explain [TS]

01:15:31   like [TS]

01:15:32   to describe exactly what I do with these [TS]

01:15:34   frogs gonna take some time but you can [TS]

01:15:36   just all you need to know is I'm the [TS]

01:15:37   go-to guy for this one kind of frog got [TS]

01:15:39   a question about this frog [TS]

01:15:40   yeah I also know about other frogs but [TS]

01:15:43   this guy is my this is my guy [TS]

01:15:45   yeah I you know but a lot of his work [TS]

01:15:49   with work you know what and it maybe it [TS]

01:15:53   maybe Maryland that one day when they [TS]

01:15:55   look back and they say two guys talking [TS]

01:15:58   podcast right guys talking podcast [TS]

01:16:02   have you heard of this two guys talking [TS]

01:16:03   podcast who's the expert who's the [TS]

01:16:06   expert on the two guys talking podcast a [TS]

01:16:08   track that's going to be Merlin Mann [TS]

01:16:11   science farmers were there idea right [TS]

01:16:13   paper but whoever said who said that [TS]

01:16:16   technology first [TS]

01:16:17   oh well I think that's yes if history [TS]

01:16:20   goes a certain way i think our future is [TS]

01:16:22   going to be fine and the thing is we [TS]

01:16:24   can't that's something we're inside it [TS]

01:16:26   right now we can't see it we cannot see [TS]

01:16:28   we're too close to it we can't see the [TS]

01:16:30   forest for the frogs [TS]

01:16:31   mmm yeah that'll do you think the [TS]

01:16:36   president's ever didn't want to meet [TS]

01:16:38   with billy graham and i don't think a [TS]

01:16:41   single president wanted to meet with [TS]

01:16:43   billy graham every president since [TS]

01:16:44   truman met with Billy Graham and I [TS]

01:16:47   wonder for a certain point they're like [TS]

01:16:49   okay what's your week look like well you [TS]

01:16:50   know we gotta go we gotta talk to you [TS]

01:16:52   Gorbachev about about this dinner and Oh [TS]

01:16:55   doing only looks like it's about time to [TS]

01:16:59   talk to Billy Graham again [TS]

01:17:00   well here's a question for you which [TS]

01:17:01   presidents do you think were actually [TS]

01:17:03   religious people of faith who governed [TS]

01:17:07   in part based upon their faith and [TS]

01:17:10   beliefs [TS]

01:17:11   i mean i-i think a question yeah I think [TS]

01:17:13   Jimmy Carter was oh yeah and i think i [TS]

01:17:16   think probably ronald reagan was really [TS]

01:17:18   pretty opportunistic I don't know he [TS]

01:17:22   said he's an onion he's tough to peel [TS]

01:17:24   but like LBJ no not at all right well [TS]

01:17:30   yeah but are you mean like I don't also [TS]

01:17:31   would not want to imply that you cannot [TS]

01:17:33   be a cynical tough you know person in [TS]

01:17:39   governance who doesn't also have faith [TS]

01:17:41   Yeah right right I'm gonna be a little [TS]

01:17:42   bit you know broad but but get Jimmy [TS]

01:17:44   Carter for sure [TS]

01:17:45   I mean I think I think price [TS]

01:17:46   he when he when he when he drinks he [TS]

01:17:48   probably genuinely felt bad [TS]

01:17:49   yeah right and and despite George a bush [TS]

01:17:54   juniors george w bush's like despite him [TS]

01:17:58   being so terrible you genuinely did get [TS]

01:18:01   a sense that he that he believed in his [TS]

01:18:05   that he believed in his religion and he [TS]

01:18:06   believed in and he was little I kind of [TS]

01:18:09   get that I get that he has like in our [TS]

01:18:11   church they had all different like when [TS]

01:18:14   the kids were in Sunday school so you [TS]

01:18:15   get the unit sanctuary think everybody [TS]

01:18:17   goes to then you got sunday school and [TS]

01:18:18   all the little kids would go to Sunday [TS]

01:18:19   school for their grade the grown-ups got [TS]

01:18:22   to choose different groups study groups [TS]

01:18:25   if you like your classes based upon our [TS]

01:18:28   demographics based upon partly like what [TS]

01:18:31   their interest was and so there was like [TS]

01:18:32   a hip young singles bible study group [TS]

01:18:36   are there was the like I don't they have [TS]

01:18:39   had fantastic names like remember [TS]

01:18:41   lamplighters was one of them they had [TS]

01:18:44   these great you know New Testament kind [TS]

01:18:46   of names but but then I remember this [TS]

01:18:48   one [TS]

01:18:49   dr. Russell Cottle was the leader of [TS]

01:18:51   this one and it was like the MIT of [TS]

01:18:54   adult church classes and he went in [TS]

01:18:57   there you didn't read the Bible you [TS]

01:18:59   studied this shit out of the Bible and [TS]

01:19:00   you brought a fucking concordance like a [TS]

01:19:02   gentleman and you have to really sit [TS]

01:19:04   down and talk about in turnover big [TS]

01:19:06   ideas about you know the stuff that [TS]

01:19:09   people even outside Christian enjoy [TS]

01:19:10   talking about the paradox the Trinity [TS]

01:19:12   like how does that actually work is [TS]

01:19:14   there is the Holy Spirit really did I [TS]

01:19:15   mean is he get really one-third of the [TS]

01:19:16   credit how does this work [TS]

01:19:17   there's all kinds of fascinating stuff [TS]

01:19:19   when you get into like you know as I'm [TS]

01:19:21   sure you must be on some level the [TS]

01:19:23   discussion of Christianity can be [TS]

01:19:24   extremely interesting [TS]

01:19:26   yeah um and so what do i say that [TS]

01:19:28   because I see jimmy carter going to dr [TS]

01:19:30   Cotterill's class and I see George W [TS]

01:19:33   Bush maybe just hanging out by the miss [TS]

01:19:36   pac-man I don't wonder if he really [TS]

01:19:39   thought a lot [TS]

01:19:41   oh i think it's i think i think it's a [TS]

01:19:42   difference in i think it's a it's the [TS]

01:19:45   transformation of Christianity right i [TS]

01:19:46   mean Jimmy Carter was practicing that [TS]

01:19:49   what we always imagined was the [TS]

01:19:52   Christian spirit and by the time George [TS]

01:19:55   Bush got into the church it was much [TS]

01:19:57   more of this prosperity gospel [TS]

01:19:59   wasn't his mostly you know what this is [TS]

01:20:01   so awful to talk about [TS]

01:20:03   I field now I feel bad but wasn't his [TS]

01:20:05   partly an arrival out of the drying up [TS]

01:20:08   well yeah but I mean you dry up and then [TS]

01:20:11   there if you if you are interested in [TS]

01:20:13   going the religion route than your you [TS]

01:20:15   just you dry up and it's like you came [TS]

01:20:17   up the escalator into the job fair of [TS]

01:20:19   religions at the convention center you [TS]

01:20:21   can pick whatever resonates with you [TS]

01:20:23   right [TS]

01:20:24   you see he's got the best tip back yeah [TS]

01:20:26   right and there are plenty of people [TS]

01:20:27   that dry up and become Buddhists or dry [TS]

01:20:29   up and go back to being Catholics like [TS]

01:20:31   they were when they were kids actually [TS]

01:20:32   there must be a special appeal to a [TS]

01:20:34   certain kind of slightly moist I'd [TS]

01:20:37   american christian and i think there is [TS]

01:20:39   for sure and i think you know i w-was [TS]

01:20:44   was in every way already pointed at this [TS]

01:20:48   version of sort of Southern Baptists but [TS]

01:20:52   whatever that whatever that has morphed [TS]

01:20:54   into yeah well it's just like if you if [TS]

01:20:58   you follow the force you know the four [TS]

01:20:59   steps of like give yourself over and so [TS]

01:21:02   forth and so on then everything good is [TS]

01:21:05   going to happen and you don't have any [TS]

01:21:07   doubt anymore and that's so different [TS]

01:21:08   from the one that Jimmy Carter practices [TS]

01:21:10   where they're like really cheering [TS]

01:21:13   full-time lifestyle guy [TS]

01:21:15   yeah let me out i'm not doing a lot [TS]

01:21:17   right are we doing it right or we you [TS]

01:21:19   know how do we help people i mean that's [TS]

01:21:21   so different you get such an i mean i [TS]

01:21:23   don't want to see him just lyin eyes [TS]

01:21:24   Jimmy Carter but uh fuck that guy but [TS]

01:21:27   like you know you also really do get the [TS]

01:21:29   sense that like whatever kind of human [TS]

01:21:30   he is that he does there's something [TS]

01:21:33   inside of him where it's probably [TS]

01:21:34   virtually impossible to tell how much of [TS]

01:21:36   his personal generosity comes out of his [TS]

01:21:38   faith and beliefs which comes out of his [TS]

01:21:39   ethics how much it comes out of his [TS]

01:21:41   heritage but is something to all of [TS]

01:21:42   those things that make this vulture on [TS]

01:21:44   of kindness that I i find very admirable [TS]

01:21:48   say what you will about the guys [TS]

01:21:49   presidency and you know reckon the [TS]

01:21:51   chopper or whatever but like I he just [TS]

01:21:53   seems like a genuinely good guy [TS]

01:21:55   yeah and then that's what that's what I [TS]

01:21:56   mean like like JFK nominally a Catholic [TS]

01:22:00   we were all terrified of his Catholicism [TS]

01:22:02   rapist you don't you don't look at paint [TS]

01:22:05   this in the White House you don't really [TS]

01:22:06   look at the way he conducted his own [TS]

01:22:08   life and think well here there's [TS]

01:22:10   somebody who they're really like really [TS]

01:22:12   cares [TS]

01:22:13   about Catholicism yeah i got that I get [TS]

01:22:16   the feeling rosaries were not on his [TS]

01:22:18   mind when he was doing what he did and [TS]

01:22:20   so I look at all the US presidents and [TS]

01:22:22   all they all saw Billy Graham they all [TS]

01:22:24   profess to be practicing more or less [TS]

01:22:27   the same version and i do not see I do [TS]

01:22:32   not see much evidence of it except in [TS]

01:22:38   those two cases right Carter as the [TS]

01:22:41   completely thoughtful Christian and [TS]

01:22:43   george bush's that completely like [TS]

01:22:45   unreflective Christian and that's pretty [TS]

01:22:48   that's pretty phenomenal it's hard to [TS]

01:22:51   know somebody's heart it's hard to know [TS]

01:22:52   and you know I don't necessarily feel [TS]

01:22:54   like we're being kind of unkind but I I [TS]

01:22:56   don't know I I don't know the answer to [TS]

01:22:58   that but you know in one of our many [TS]

01:23:00   lost episodes at the guy I said [TS]

01:23:02   something to you one time that really [TS]

01:23:03   means a lot to me which is that I you [TS]

01:23:05   didn't disagree with this but like [TS]

01:23:06   there's I i feel like i have these [TS]

01:23:08   friends where you could be friends with [TS]

01:23:10   this person for 10 years and kinda only [TS]

01:23:14   came up once or twice that they even [TS]

01:23:16   quote unquote go to church but there's [TS]

01:23:18   something about the way they conduct [TS]

01:23:20   themselves not is really admirable and [TS]

01:23:24   kind and gentle and sometimes funny and [TS]

01:23:27   maybe they drinking playing bands and [TS]

01:23:29   stuff but there's nothing to what they [TS]

01:23:30   do that this was about like [TS]

01:23:32   proselytizing or judging but they're [TS]

01:23:34   always the ones who show up to help [TS]

01:23:36   people offer stuff and that's the strain [TS]

01:23:38   that I seen something like Jimmy Carter [TS]

01:23:40   and I saw like in the people i want to [TS]

01:23:41   church with are getting into that topic [TS]

01:23:43   here no not at all i remember hilarious [TS]

01:23:46   McConaughey have but we know we had a [TS]

01:23:49   disagreement one time you and I long [TS]

01:23:51   time before we started doing this [TS]

01:23:52   podcast it was one of the it was one of [TS]

01:23:54   those times when you called me on the [TS]
