Ep. 181: "Saltin' Up"

00:00:00   pee bad [TS]

00:00:09   oh hello hi John by Marlon that's going [TS]

00:00:13   good how are you [TS]

00:00:15   oh wait you said you sound good oh thank [TS]

00:00:17   you i'm in a professional podcasting [TS]

00:00:20   studio you are not [TS]

00:00:22   yeah i would like I would like your [TS]

00:00:23   voice to be turned up a little bit i'm [TS]

00:00:24   going to look out the window and say to [TS]

00:00:26   the person operating the board you turn [TS]

00:00:29   up a turn up the Merlin oh my god I have [TS]

00:00:32   so many questions [TS]

00:00:33   yeah always that sounds better well [TS]

00:00:36   that's good yeah this is happening in [TS]

00:00:38   your RV no no i haven't built a [TS]

00:00:40   professional podcast video in my RV and [TS]

00:00:43   inside the American concrete building i [TS]

00:00:46   am in humans had American well it turns [TS]

00:00:48   out i got that wrong it's the American [TS]

00:00:49   cement building [TS]

00:00:51   oh i just learned this week that there's [TS]

00:00:52   a difference yeah well so are minutes [TS]

00:00:55   i'm in the cement building what you some [TS]

00:00:57   great thank you [TS]

00:00:59   what the hell's going on 1mon sm7b which [TS]

00:01:02   as you know is you know my preferred [TS]

00:01:03   microphone and I'm actually so where to [TS]

00:01:10   begin so I don't you know I drove down [TS]

00:01:12   to california in my GM CRP then i [TS]

00:01:15   recently purchased you still there [TS]

00:01:18   yeah yeah visiting I just started [TS]

00:01:20   helping out in jail [TS]

00:01:22   could you just one call em yes and so I [TS]

00:01:27   get down here to California and I've got [TS]

00:01:29   some rehearsals and some shows i'm gonna [TS]

00:01:31   do you get all this stuff and I can was [TS]

00:01:33   like oh yeah I'll just stay in the RV [TS]

00:01:34   you know that i had a somebody gave me a [TS]

00:01:37   podcasting microphone like one of those [TS]

00:01:39   USB ones I was like I'm just gonna you [TS]

00:01:43   know pull up in front of a cafe and i'll [TS]

00:01:44   plug in my microphone in my laptop it's [TS]

00:01:47   not going to sound great but but it will [TS]

00:01:49   be a mobile kind of facility but I [TS]

00:01:54   didn't mean what I didn't really plan [TS]

00:01:55   for and I knew this already is that when [TS]

00:01:59   you're living in an RV it's it's it it's [TS]

00:02:03   not you're not living a normal life and [TS]

00:02:07   it's kind of like when you when you buy [TS]

00:02:09   your first volkswagen bug and then all [TS]

00:02:12   of a sudden you see Volkswagen bugs [TS]

00:02:13   everywhere you didn't know that they [TS]

00:02:15   were there before you buy an RV and [TS]

00:02:18   you're driving an RV and all the sudden [TS]

00:02:21   you realize there's this whole RV [TS]

00:02:24   ecosystem that your you just weren't [TS]

00:02:28   seeing before and because there are [TS]

00:02:31   multiple layers of an RV ecosystem and [TS]

00:02:34   and when you're on the highways you see [TS]

00:02:37   these beautiful rvs these big rich [TS]

00:02:39   people are being that are traveling [TS]

00:02:42   America's highways and byways and [TS]

00:02:45   they're full of retirees and they they [TS]

00:02:47   cost 200 thousand dollars but then when [TS]

00:02:50   you get down into a city a city of any [TS]

00:02:51   size you see the substrata of RV culture [TS]

00:02:56   which is the people living in their RVs [TS]

00:03:00   on the streets of your town is big here [TS]

00:03:03   yeah really big in California so much so [TS]

00:03:06   that street signs that i used to know he [TS]

00:03:11   you pull up it into a parking spot and [TS]

00:03:13   there's a street sign that's like five [TS]

00:03:14   paragraphs long and formerly as an RV [TS]

00:03:19   owners I would just skim the first three [TS]

00:03:20   three sentences associated operator in a [TS]

00:03:24   in a civilian car you don't need to read [TS]

00:03:27   all that stuff you're talking you're not [TS]

00:03:28   a monster [TS]

00:03:29   what time is it what day is it let me [TS]

00:03:30   let me figure out if I can park here but [TS]

00:03:33   now as an RV owner you realize a lot of [TS]

00:03:35   these signs particularly in that way [TS]

00:03:36   they say things like no vehicles over [TS]

00:03:40   eight feet tall and remembers think i [TS]

00:03:45   ever saw that sign before it's a note is [TS]

00:03:47   its privileged you never saw the [TS]

00:03:48   discrimination that's right i just i was [TS]

00:03:50   blind to it and then a signs that say no [TS]

00:03:54   parking but from 8pm to 8am I was like [TS]

00:03:58   what what would crazy sign they think [TS]

00:04:01   you're a vagrant John they absolutely do [TS]

00:04:03   so no sitting on the sidewalk for John [TS]

00:04:05   know sitting on the sidewalk precisely [TS]

00:04:08   and so then I started looking around and [TS]

00:04:10   I see these people in their RVs and [TS]

00:04:12   they're parked all over where they can [TS]

00:04:14   get away with it and you know they're [TS]

00:04:16   showering in people's like garden hose [TS]

00:04:21   and it's like it's a whole it's a whole [TS]

00:04:23   world they're not homeless because they [TS]

00:04:25   have a they have a car [TS]

00:04:26   with a bit in it uh-huh and now that's [TS]

00:04:29   me so last night I slept on the corner [TS]

00:04:32   of Melrose and somewhere no rosen and [TS]

00:04:36   despair when I woke up this morning and [TS]

00:04:40   people walking their dogs around me and [TS]

00:04:43   that and scowling at me and I was like [TS]

00:04:46   I'm a podcast today with murder one [TS]

00:04:48   you know what I'll just just just whip [TS]

00:04:50   up in front of a cafe somewhere now I'll [TS]

00:04:52   hijack their Wi-Fi and then I'm in the [TS]

00:04:55   RB and i'm driving around it's like wait [TS]

00:04:57   a minute you don't whip up in front of [TS]

00:04:58   anywhere in this thing you're not just [TS]

00:05:00   you know just going to slide Indian an [TS]

00:05:02   open spot you gonna slide anywhere [TS]

00:05:04   pull up into a load load only zone and [TS]

00:05:07   just my fingers on like this thing is [TS]

00:05:11   it's like an aircraft carrier so I'm [TS]

00:05:13   tooling around and it's like once you [TS]

00:05:15   get moving you kind of can't stop you're [TS]

00:05:17   in this sort of big whale shark of a [TS]

00:05:20   pang and your mouth is open and you're [TS]

00:05:22   swallowing krill and you can't you just [TS]

00:05:25   you can't stop moving because if you do [TS]

00:05:27   then [TS]

00:05:28   and particularly in la if you sleeping [TS]

00:05:30   slow down like just the mercedes-benz [TS]

00:05:34   pile up behind you like red blood cells [TS]

00:05:38   through a constricted artery so it's [TS]

00:05:41   like to be dick cheney mm let's get to [TS]

00:05:45   that is brutal and you know like I've [TS]

00:05:48   always been in LA in a fast car and a [TS]

00:05:50   fast-moving car even when I was in the [TS]

00:05:52   tour van it was a fast-moving BAM [TS]

00:05:55   now i'm going to slow van and you [TS]

00:05:57   realize that la is not prepared for slow [TS]

00:06:01   moving vehicles that there's a there's a [TS]

00:06:03   complete it absolutely makes sense there [TS]

00:06:06   is a flowchart here but it presumes that [TS]

00:06:09   everyone is slipping and just absolutely [TS]

00:06:11   flooring their gas pedal at every [TS]

00:06:13   opportunity and so this thing's like / [TS]

00:06:16   or and people just don't know what to do [TS]

00:06:19   about it [TS]

00:06:20   it's absolutely disrupting the system [TS]

00:06:23   i'm sure i've been inside now for 45 [TS]

00:06:25   minutes and i'm sure there's there are [TS]

00:06:26   still traffic problems that i created [TS]

00:06:27   what did you end up parking so if you [TS]

00:06:30   can say so here i go i'm driving along [TS]

00:06:32   I'm like what am I gonna do I want a [TS]

00:06:34   podcast with Merlin I'm living in a van [TS]

00:06:37   now I've become a coma I'm [TS]

00:06:39   guy that has one Hawaiian shirt oh my [TS]

00:06:42   goodness and doesn't your mat fully but [TS]

00:06:45   yeah but i'm also trying to interact [TS]

00:06:47   with people in the straight world this [TS]

00:06:49   is the problem if I was fully in RV [TS]

00:06:51   ecosystem then i would i would start to [TS]

00:06:55   be one of the disappeared right and no [TS]

00:06:57   one would know people wouldn't [TS]

00:06:58   acknowledge me and I would be eating [TS]

00:07:00   mostly in Honduras restaurants and I [TS]

00:07:03   would be in this being a separate world [TS]

00:07:05   uh-huh but i'm also trying to go to [TS]

00:07:09   rehearsals into shows and be around [TS]

00:07:11   people that stuff in LA because yeah in [TS]

00:07:14   some ways you're transitioning into a [TS]

00:07:16   kind of Transportation reassignment [TS]

00:07:18   surgery you're very slowly moving into [TS]

00:07:20   this new world and that's gonna be Rocky [TS]

00:07:21   you need to you need to stand with one [TS]

00:07:24   foot over here and another over there in [TS]

00:07:25   a wheel in the middle and and you're not [TS]

00:07:27   gonna be welcomed by I've seen these [TS]

00:07:28   people moving packs got less than they [TS]

00:07:30   got tribes hit and we we had a car trip [TS]

00:07:33   over the weekend and we passed one of [TS]

00:07:34   these places and the sticker prices on [TS]

00:07:36   these things are crazy you know that the [TS]

00:07:38   same time I was like you know what 439 [TS]

00:07:41   thousand dollars you could have a really [TS]

00:07:43   sweet house that you can drive [TS]

00:07:45   that's right maybe it's my age i just [TS]

00:07:47   turned 49 maybe it is my age but I find [TS]

00:07:50   that extremely appealing and i would [TS]

00:07:52   like to meet the tribe I would like some [TS]

00:07:53   on during food and hawaiian shirt I can [TS]

00:07:54   enjoy that yeah yeah it's all the [TS]

00:07:56   freedom is unparalleled except need to [TS]

00:07:59   park [TS]

00:07:59   well they stick together because there's [TS]

00:08:01   safety in numbers and the park all [TS]

00:08:02   together and then they can like get [TS]

00:08:04   electricity for themselves and and send [TS]

00:08:07   their who and pee down a tube uh-huh [TS]

00:08:11   but when your when your renegade when [TS]

00:08:14   you're when you're off the RV grid [TS]

00:08:15   rights and onto the neighbor the street [TS]

00:08:18   grid you're a real rope you are your you [TS]

00:08:21   are here between worlds person and you [TS]

00:08:24   know and so I'm over it [TS]

00:08:26   a friends house and they're like poop do [TS]

00:08:28   and we're watching a movie and then [TS]

00:08:29   they're like okay well goodnight and [TS]

00:08:31   like three people walk out the door get [TS]

00:08:34   into boobers that appear mysteriously [TS]

00:08:36   and then poof they're off to an Airbnb [TS]

00:08:39   somewhere and she's delivered [TS]

00:08:43   yeah just there on their phone and [TS]

00:08:44   they're like Amazon next day delivery [TS]

00:08:46   POW and I'm like bringing them [TS]

00:08:49   www and down to some kind of interest [TS]

00:08:53   and a home depot parking lot and like [TS]

00:08:55   trying to get my my raise my TV antenna [TS]

00:08:59   with her bike chain that I rigged up so [TS]

00:09:03   so anyway so I'm driving along this [TS]

00:09:06   morning and I'm like what am I gonna do [TS]

00:09:07   what am I gonna do I can't even slow [TS]

00:09:09   down without the mercedes-benz piling up [TS]

00:09:13   behind me there's no loading zones [TS]

00:09:16   anywhere and I'm like who do I know in [TS]

00:09:18   la that I can help me out of his body [TS]

00:09:21   it's almost is there anybody who does [TS]

00:09:23   podcast podcast in LA and I don't think [TS]

00:09:25   there's that many people in LA to a [TS]

00:09:27   podcast i could go to Michael bike back [TS]

00:09:28   to call Michael Penn Michael pan and say [TS]

00:09:31   hey can I use your studio but you know [TS]

00:09:32   what he's in there making soundtracks [TS]

00:09:34   all the time if I were Romeo and black [TS]

00:09:36   jeans [TS]

00:09:37   what if I were heat cliff is no myth you [TS]

00:09:40   get Marc Maron he's got a garage but his [TS]

00:09:41   neighbors always running the weed [TS]

00:09:42   whacker will see him you know marks [TS]

00:09:44   never invited me on his program [TS]

00:09:46   me neither so how did I think you're sol [TS]

00:09:49   you're gonna have to go with eng you go [TS]

00:09:51   to go to orange county is probably [TS]

00:09:53   podcasters orange county right [TS]

00:09:54   podcasters in orange county but they're [TS]

00:09:56   all wearing chuck taylors and their [TS]

00:09:57   podcasts are really you know like super [TS]

00:10:00   like compressed high-energy podcasts [TS]

00:10:03   oh yea high mids right so what you're [TS]

00:10:06   doing so i called my good friend Jesse [TS]

00:10:09   thorn of the maximum fun podcast network [TS]

00:10:12   and I said hey you guys podcast and he [TS]

00:10:16   was like as a matter of fact we do and [TS]

00:10:19   we haven't putting this many [TS]

00:10:20   unfortunately we have address scrapbook [TS]

00:10:22   and so I took the elevator lady occur [TS]

00:10:25   that well you know he does have he does [TS]

00:10:28   have quite a few menswear accessories in [TS]

00:10:31   the office including a poncho is a [TS]

00:10:34   podcasting poncho he has a podcasting [TS]

00:10:36   poncho everything about jesse is exactly [TS]

00:10:39   well it's it's exactly dialed in say [TS]

00:10:41   what you will about Jesse that men think [TS]

00:10:43   stuff through he's thinking he's jesus [TS]

00:10:45   he's a wise grown-up he's he was [TS]

00:10:47   probably born a grown-up you well you [TS]

00:10:49   know I bet he's always been 63 [TS]

00:10:51   prematurely aged you um he had he has a [TS]

00:10:54   steamer clothes steamer in his bathroom [TS]

00:10:56   here [TS]

00:10:57   he has a very long beard now which is [TS]

00:11:00   made of 100-percent alpaca uh anyway so [TS]

00:11:05   jesse was like well I'm not in the [TS]

00:11:06   office right now but I'm headed there [TS]

00:11:07   and so I come down to this place in the [TS]

00:11:09   American cement building which is an [TS]

00:11:12   actual office building in an actual [TS]

00:11:14   downtown area [TS]

00:11:16   I go upstairs I knocked on the door and [TS]

00:11:18   they're they're our desks and people [TS]

00:11:20   working in the maximum fun network [TS]

00:11:23   they're there for employees at their [TS]

00:11:25   desks and I got together probably doing [TS]

00:11:27   tech support or something they're only [TS]

00:11:29   answer your question about samsung [TS]

00:11:30   phones they're working on their computer [TS]

00:11:32   you can make money from our podcast and [TS]

00:11:34   I'm telling you it's a network that's [TS]

00:11:35   unlike any other podcasts and ft [TS]

00:11:38   that's the difference yeah if it's what [TS]

00:11:40   it is it's like it's like China you you [TS]

00:11:42   may carry you make a bit of volume [TS]

00:11:44   discount [TS]

00:11:45   absolutely so I come in of course no one [TS]

00:11:48   in the office knew that I was coming [TS]

00:11:50   there are like oh hello and then and so [TS]

00:11:54   I'm here and I just put my arms and I [TS]

00:11:56   have children but i didn't mention [TS]

00:11:58   anybody that I was here to do a podcast [TS]

00:12:00   I was just like oh yeah and you know and [TS]

00:12:02   don't know the people that knew me [TS]

00:12:05   already were just like oh well I guess [TS]

00:12:07   this is normal this john rocker x here [TS]

00:12:10   Justin showed up and now is making some [TS]

00:12:12   chitchat with us eating doughnuts and [TS]

00:12:16   then just he waltzed in and we we did [TS]

00:12:18   some technical we did some technical [TS]

00:12:20   work and there's just joshing aside [TS]

00:12:23   there's a legitimate engineer sitting [TS]

00:12:25   here watching me through this last this [TS]

00:12:26   is brand-new ridiculous i I just have to [TS]

00:12:28   say you're joshing aside just the best [TS]

00:12:31   and I cannot believe that that worked [TS]

00:12:33   out so quickly and thank you to jesse [TS]

00:12:35   and team was not one super cool is that [TS]

00:12:37   out we have we've done shoutouts to the [TS]

00:12:40   maximum fun network of podcast I don't [TS]

00:12:42   like to mention other things on the show [TS]

00:12:43   I know you don't I think it's think it's [TS]

00:12:45   unseemly it's a little woozy [TS]

00:12:47   it's gratuitous little gratuitous [TS]

00:12:48   shoutout whoo yeah here's a little shout [TS]

00:12:51   out but in this case they don't really [TS]

00:12:53   really going above and beyond [TS]

00:12:55   they still making cement there are they [TS]

00:12:57   administering cement so here's the thing [TS]

00:12:59   about the American cement building i [TS]

00:13:00   believe that it's called that because [TS]

00:13:01   it's made of cement see [TS]

00:13:04   they're smart you know what they're good [TS]

00:13:05   with in la is branding and all its all [TS]

00:13:08   right on there it's it's a company that [TS]

00:13:10   sells cement in America look just just [TS]

00:13:12   look at the building [TS]

00:13:13   well that's that's the thing i don't [TS]

00:13:14   even know if there was an American [TS]

00:13:15   cement company although I guess they're [TS]

00:13:17   probably was but the building really [TS]

00:13:19   showcases the power of cement important [TS]

00:13:24   cement is I do it's extremely expensive [TS]

00:13:26   but it you know i heard a thing about [TS]

00:13:29   this i heard a podcast about this about [TS]

00:13:31   cement and how important so how [TS]

00:13:33   important cement wait let me get this [TS]

00:13:34   right you got cement you got concrete [TS]

00:13:36   cement is the stuff you it's like that's [TS]

00:13:38   the important ingredient right you got a [TS]

00:13:40   bunch of rocks you got some water [TS]

00:13:42   there's cement and concrete but there's [TS]

00:13:43   not concrete and cement precisely cell [TS]

00:13:45   and apparently this is something where [TS]

00:13:47   turns out a lot of times when you want [TS]

00:13:49   to cut corners because some it is so [TS]

00:13:51   costly signal back to the copper pipe [TS]

00:13:54   issue i think they go a little short on [TS]

00:13:56   the cement building falls down it will [TS]

00:13:58   generally put extra sand or extra like [TS]

00:14:00   oatmeal or something and it could be [TS]

00:14:02   oatmeal could be to be so could be a [TS]

00:14:04   Satan i think it's called the decision [TS]

00:14:06   any kind of hit kind of good grades are [TS]

00:14:09   rotating lot of lot of protein but it's [TS]

00:14:11   not gonna be good for chinese building [TS]

00:14:12   right well and in this case it's built [TS]

00:14:15   its built-in a very distinctive like [TS]

00:14:18   latticework sixties latticework that is [TS]

00:14:21   slightly reminiscent of the World Trade [TS]

00:14:23   Center I'm but but more but it's more [TS]

00:14:26   scenes sturdier it's less trying to say [TS]

00:14:29   it's not less emulating birds in flight [TS]

00:14:31   and more saying like this is a this is [TS]

00:14:34   like a like a lattice and natural [TS]

00:14:38   lattice maybe a DNA helix oh my goodness [TS]

00:14:42   was turned into a building [TS]

00:14:44   ok i'm looking at it now ok this is this [TS]

00:14:46   is this is a big deal it's a nice place [TS]

00:14:49   it's really big noise future saying it [TS]

00:14:50   looks kind of like it looks a little bit [TS]

00:14:53   like a shitty grill like you get a park [TS]

00:14:56   that kind of lattice except as a [TS]

00:14:57   building that's the building [TS]

00:15:00   it's like at least like seven eight [TS]

00:15:01   stories high no I'm on the 9th floor and [TS]

00:15:02   there's who there's floors above me I [TS]

00:15:04   think there's 14 Florida oh this is [TS]

00:15:06   beautiful it I what I what I think it is [TS]

00:15:08   it's it's exactly the same lattice that [TS]

00:15:10   you would use if you were doing inside [TS]

00:15:12   someone's artery and opening it up after [TS]

00:15:16   and filled with black it's a building [TS]

00:15:17   made of stents it's a stint that's right [TS]

00:15:20   square stand you know what you don't [TS]

00:15:22   like about this John Rocket sub [TS]

00:15:23   brutalist it's not it's not full on [TS]

00:15:25   brutalist it's not truly brutal and just [TS]

00:15:27   kind of aggressive it's the right it [TS]

00:15:29   would be at home in a in Brasilia yes [TS]

00:15:33   but it would also be at home stay here [TS]

00:15:36   in LA [TS]

00:15:36   I've got a lot of people climb this [TS]

00:15:38   thing it looks really climbable Shh [TS]

00:15:40   sorry my bad we get in trouble pencil so [TS]

00:15:45   that's my saga Here I am halfway through [TS]

00:15:47   a an RV adventure my first my debut RV [TS]

00:15:54   adventure and I'm in a downtown [TS]

00:15:56   podcasting office [TS]

00:15:58   well here's the thing I we've known each [TS]

00:16:00   other for over a decade now and there's [TS]

00:16:02   a question I I don't ask too often [TS]

00:16:04   because it's none of my fucking business [TS]

00:16:05   but what the hell are you doing [TS]

00:16:07   mhm mhm you like I keep my powder dry [TS]

00:16:10   for that 1i bring that one out every [TS]

00:16:12   couple years it's yeah my biannual [TS]

00:16:14   question what the hell are you doing [TS]

00:16:16   right now are you in a few expect so [TS]

00:16:18   here's looking at call someone [TS]

00:16:19   this is very confusing to me so did I [TS]

00:16:23   tell you that I went to see a [TS]

00:16:24   psychiatrist [TS]

00:16:25   don't mention this yeah you did yeah you [TS]

00:16:29   actually talked about it on air and it [TS]

00:16:30   sound like you were giving a game [TS]

00:16:32   attempt do you say in your words but [TS]

00:16:35   it's not like you're it was a game [TS]

00:16:37   attempt to say okay let's give this a [TS]

00:16:38   throw [TS]

00:16:39   sure let's give this a try and so so the [TS]

00:16:43   psychiatrist it gave me a whole saga [TS]

00:16:44   about bipolar 2 and we're going to give [TS]

00:16:48   you some anti-seizure medication because [TS]

00:16:50   inexplicably that works and bipolar to [TS]

00:16:53   no one knows why also works for ADHD is [TS]

00:16:56   that right that's right that's right we [TS]

00:16:58   talked about that so i started taking [TS]

00:16:59   this stuff in it look 4a and I went [TS]

00:17:01   through the whole thing I was like all [TS]

00:17:03   the things that I normally would would [TS]

00:17:05   not do like for instance when he said we [TS]

00:17:08   need to take it for two weeks at a very [TS]

00:17:10   minut dose just to make sure you're not [TS]

00:17:12   allergic to [TS]

00:17:13   yeah and I was like ah that's so [TS]

00:17:15   laborious is it all of our cut the size [TS]

00:17:21   a little maybe [TS]

00:17:24   ok does that seem like a good little [TS]

00:17:26   Goodman and I said that's a that is an [TS]

00:17:29   antiserum it [TS]

00:17:29   vacation with a black box warning that [TS]

00:17:32   basically watch out for the first week [TS]

00:17:34   because you may get a deadly skin [TS]

00:17:36   disease there it is that's the one limit [TS]

00:17:38   all start with like half start you start [TS]

00:17:40   real real low you ramp up and then you [TS]

00:17:42   wrap the shit down right when you take [TS]

00:17:44   that super interesting i took that we [TS]

00:17:47   did for several years [TS]

00:17:48   oh you did oh yeah oh ok well we know [TS]

00:17:51   anyway why don't we interrupt this is [TS]

00:17:53   your story but I also i will give you a [TS]

00:17:54   wonderful analogy that my shrink gave me [TS]

00:17:56   for how it works [TS]

00:17:58   ok yeah so anyway you got a black box [TS]

00:18:00   warning you talk to the shrink [TS]

00:18:02   yeah jesus christ is fascinating well so [TS]

00:18:04   yeah right now in our podcast has never [TS]

00:18:06   been let's compare medications podcast [TS]

00:18:07   but I'll that everything's kind of [TS]

00:18:08   podcast i love that [TS]

00:18:09   yeah it's good it's good that we're [TS]

00:18:11   breaking off so I'm taking this stuff [TS]

00:18:14   I've never taken a a psychological [TS]

00:18:19   medication before right except like it [TS]

00:18:22   but you know back in the day at parties [TS]

00:18:23   people be like I'm on lithium and I'd be [TS]

00:18:25   like really give me four and it gave me [TS]

00:18:27   for lithium and then there'd be this [TS]

00:18:28   uncomfortable screaming in my head and [TS]

00:18:30   I'm like I don't want to take that [TS]

00:18:31   that's the street name for that they [TS]

00:18:33   call that something up [TS]

00:18:34   yeah that doing some salt ok let's get [TS]

00:18:37   salty and and then people would say like [TS]

00:18:40   well that's not a lithium works you [TS]

00:18:42   don't just take four of them and like [TS]

00:18:43   get a buzz that's that's not that's [TS]

00:18:45   harsh my mellow as well and I was like [TS]

00:18:48   you and then everybody's antidepressants [TS]

00:18:50   I would always like I would always take [TS]

00:18:52   a handful of them to see what they did [TS]

00:18:54   and that's not how they work and so I [TS]

00:18:56   was just like I don't want to take any [TS]

00:18:57   of that stuff it's all bad it makes it's [TS]

00:18:59   like taking msg but anyway so this is [TS]

00:19:03   the first time I've ever taken at some [TS]

00:19:05   kind of medication that's meant to [TS]

00:19:06   affect my whatever my personality my [TS]

00:19:12   personality and but I did that I did [TS]

00:19:15   what he said I took it two weeks at this [TS]

00:19:17   my new dose I was just so bored of that [TS]

00:19:19   but I'm like you're trying to be you try [TS]

00:19:22   to like join the normals you're trying [TS]

00:19:24   to be a snork like just do it do what [TS]

00:19:26   they say when i started to take a little [TS]

00:19:28   bit more two weeks at a little bit more [TS]

00:19:32   and I was just like this is just come on [TS]

00:19:34   let's get to the good part [TS]

00:19:36   right in it you do have to take it super [TS]

00:19:38   slowly and I'm still your story [TS]

00:19:41   it takes a while for it to do anything [TS]

00:19:42   mm because you've got to get to the [TS]

00:19:44   target dose which you want to do super [TS]

00:19:46   slowly so you don't die from the skin [TS]

00:19:47   thing right I want to get the skin thing [TS]

00:19:49   so then I get up to the minimum what he [TS]

00:19:53   described as the minimum therapeutic [TS]

00:19:55   dose and he said if you do not have [TS]

00:19:57   bipolar disorder you can take this stuff [TS]

00:20:00   all day and won't do anything to you it [TS]

00:20:02   doesn't have any there's no side effects [TS]

00:20:04   and it doesn't it does not active on [TS]

00:20:07   someone it just has some effect that we [TS]

00:20:11   don't we don't understand and cannot [TS]

00:20:14   quantify what does have him and [TS]

00:20:17   measurable effect on people that suffer [TS]

00:20:19   from this this condition which we also [TS]

00:20:23   don't understand about you very much [TS]

00:20:26   pitch everything you love about medicine [TS]

00:20:28   in one paragraph yeah I was just like [TS]

00:20:30   great [TS]

00:20:30   well shit why don't we throw eggs at the [TS]

00:20:33   wall we don't think we don't we don't [TS]

00:20:35   exactly know what's wrong with you but [TS]

00:20:36   we have a name for it and drug that may [TS]

00:20:38   or may not work we invented a name for [TS]

00:20:40   it and now i'm sitting here because I [TS]

00:20:42   went to college for a long time whoo [TS]

00:20:44   and anyway so I'm taking this stuff and [TS]

00:20:48   then in the course of a very short [TS]

00:20:50   amount of time i wrote a song i sent it [TS]

00:20:54   to a man she recorded it and is now [TS]

00:20:58   talking about putting it on a new record [TS]

00:20:59   and then I bought an RV off of a like a [TS]

00:21:03   parking lot in the rain from a guy and [TS]

00:21:07   was like great [TS]

00:21:09   here's the money and then I drove it off [TS]

00:21:12   that Todd was like now I own this [TS]

00:21:14   yeah and I've been making some very very [TS]

00:21:19   exciting decisions across the whole [TS]

00:21:23   broad spectrum of my life that are just [TS]

00:21:26   that seem like great decision and I'm [TS]

00:21:31   very excited by them and then at a [TS]

00:21:36   certain point about two weeks and I was [TS]

00:21:38   like hey there there seems to be a there [TS]

00:21:41   seems to be a pattern [TS]

00:21:43   um the all the all these decisions are [TS]

00:21:46   like there-there they're fairly dramatic [TS]

00:21:49   dick but I feel great about them and i'm [TS]

00:21:53   sleeping well it's not like I'm it's not [TS]

00:21:56   like I'm in a manic state where I'm [TS]

00:21:58   always sleeping three hours a day like [TS]

00:22:00   getting a full night's sleep but i am [TS]

00:22:05   i'm absolutely exhibited signs these are [TS]

00:22:08   these are all choices i would make when [TS]

00:22:10   i was on a on a on a tear [TS]

00:22:14   let's say yeah but but i don't i'm not i [TS]

00:22:20   don't feel like i'm suffering the the [TS]

00:22:24   other symptoms of a manic episode which [TS]

00:22:28   are then I don't sleep that I forget to [TS]

00:22:30   eat that I you know I'm not like [TS]

00:22:34   gambling a lot right but in and you know [TS]

00:22:39   sometimes at two o'clock in the morning [TS]

00:22:40   I'll go on ebay and I by five or six [TS]

00:22:42   different patches from world war two [TS]

00:22:46   veteran like last man standing clubs but [TS]

00:22:52   that seems normal [TS]

00:22:53   so anyway it's it all seems very related [TS]

00:22:57   i don't know if i would have the the [TS]

00:23:00   gumption to buy an RV and and then set [TS]

00:23:03   off driving into California with almost [TS]

00:23:06   no preparation I don't think I would do [TS]

00:23:09   that in in a depressed state but it also [TS]

00:23:13   like I'm handling things that I when the [TS]

00:23:17   water pump blew up in eugene i didn't [TS]

00:23:19   just walk away from it and get on a [TS]

00:23:20   train right like I fixed it and so so [TS]

00:23:26   I'm I feel like I'm i am part of an [TS]

00:23:29   experiment right now her and maybe maybe [TS]

00:23:33   it's maybe I'm the experiment and the [TS]

00:23:34   experimenter but I'm and I'm taking [TS]

00:23:39   medication and I making some making some [TS]

00:23:41   adventure choices must be an exciting [TS]

00:23:44   time [TS]

00:23:45   well we'll see we'll see six months from [TS]

00:23:47   now because i did i did get a call for [TS]

00:23:50   climbing the American cement company but [TS]

00:23:52   i did get a call from my accountant [TS]

00:23:55   recently and she said you don't have any [TS]

00:24:00   money [TS]

00:24:00   you ran for public office earlier this [TS]

00:24:03   her and you didn't make any money doing [TS]

00:24:04   that that's a call you don't get you [TS]

00:24:06   spent all you spent money doing that and [TS]

00:24:08   not only that but everything you did [TS]

00:24:09   everything you bought when you're [TS]

00:24:10   running for office you can't deduct the [TS]

00:24:12   duck many of them [TS]

00:24:13   Oh God and then you just stopped running [TS]

00:24:16   for office just what couple of months [TS]

00:24:18   ago and you had it's not like you had a [TS]

00:24:22   it's not like he had a wall of money [TS]

00:24:24   that you that you needed to unlock that [TS]

00:24:27   was motivating rather than depressive [TS]

00:24:29   yes well yeah but what she was saying [TS]

00:24:32   was your in California in an RV in a [TS]

00:24:34   40-year old RV and and you are out of [TS]

00:24:39   money so choose wisely choose wisely [TS]

00:24:43   what I'm what things you buy at autozone [TS]

00:24:46   like don't just go in and buy cup [TS]

00:24:49   holders for the whole RV if you need a [TS]

00:24:52   cup holder by one but don't kid it all [TS]

00:24:55   out you know like I have to have to be [TS]

00:24:59   choosy right now so that's where I'm at [TS]

00:25:03   wow you're having sometimes and [TS]

00:25:05   sometimes i'm gonna i'm gonna do some [TS]

00:25:06   shows in LA with aimee mann im gonna [TS]

00:25:08   come up to San Francisco and do some [TS]

00:25:09   shows with Amy and their yea year and is [TS]

00:25:13   gonna be there not going to be there and [TS]

00:25:14   liz phair we may get a babysitter and [TS]

00:25:16   come to that Jonathan Coulton also yep [TS]

00:25:18   heard of him and then we're going to fly [TS]

00:25:21   across the country to boston and i'm [TS]

00:25:23   going to leave the RV in San Francisco [TS]

00:25:24   somewhere and no one I know everyone i [TS]

00:25:29   know in San Francisco lives in a in a in [TS]

00:25:31   an apartment basically you know [TS]

00:25:32   townhouse [TS]

00:25:33   yeah no RV parking at your house for [TS]

00:25:35   instance which talk because there are [TS]

00:25:38   and there are streets where people park [TS]

00:25:42   their RVs sure but I don't know if I'm I [TS]

00:25:46   don't know if I could live there two [TS]

00:25:47   weeks is a long time that's a long time [TS]

00:25:49   you need a friend who moved it for you [TS]

00:25:51   yeah that's right we need a friend with [TS]

00:25:52   the daughter who wanted to go for a ride [TS]

00:25:54   in an RV across the Golden help you as a [TS]

00:25:55   friend with a daughter who won't stop [TS]

00:25:57   talking about when Uncle John will be [TS]

00:25:58   here he should come for at least a [TS]

00:26:00   couple days because i really want to [TS]

00:26:01   ride around the yeah well and and one of [TS]

00:26:03   the great one of the great enticements [TS]

00:26:05   of the RV is that it was a it was it was [TS]

00:26:08   restored [TS]

00:26:09   let's call it restored in the eighties [TS]

00:26:12   during a time when one of the popular [TS]

00:26:16   upholstery colors was something i call [TS]

00:26:19   black berry smoothie yeah black berry [TS]

00:26:23   smoothie with an extra dollop of yogurt [TS]

00:26:24   so it's like pinky pinky purple and it [TS]

00:26:28   really it really makes the the fake wood [TS]

00:26:32   grain paneling it really makes it pop [TS]

00:26:33   over so I people a lot of people might [TS]

00:26:37   make a decision like that makes it look [TS]

00:26:38   a little over-the-top i'm guessing it [TS]

00:26:40   looks very accurate for the period [TS]

00:26:42   it looks accurate for the period up it [TS]

00:26:44   looks accurate for the period that it [TS]

00:26:46   was restored right it doesn't look [TS]

00:26:48   accurate for the 1975 in 1975 it would [TS]

00:26:51   have all been like orange it's pretty [TS]

00:26:53   much every apartment i've ever lived in [TS]

00:26:55   we're like you kinda wish it looked the [TS]

00:26:56   way it looked when it was built if you [TS]

00:26:57   get all man mid-century modern yeah but [TS]

00:26:59   you know they had a couple extra grand [TS]

00:27:01   in 1975 and these did it yeah yeah [TS]

00:27:04   that's exactly right it was like 80 it [TS]

00:27:06   was like 84 and the guy had a deal [TS]

00:27:09   he went to the point where java cotton [TS]

00:27:11   refrigerator see that here he was like [TS]

00:27:12   get those out of here yet it yet it he [TS]

00:27:15   had like a maybe had a credit at the [TS]

00:27:18   discount carpet where I was expiring and [TS]

00:27:20   he's the credit that's right and the [TS]

00:27:22   people there were like you know we got a [TS]

00:27:23   huge order a for like carpet for the [TS]

00:27:28   ramada inn and we have like a couple of [TS]

00:27:30   extra rolls just enough to do a movie so [TS]

00:27:34   there's a little bit of a robot a little [TS]

00:27:35   bit of a convention center carpet and [TS]

00:27:38   and then this black berry smoothie [TS]

00:27:40   upholstery it's a it's a sight to behold [TS]

00:27:43   this sounds like a very exciting time [TS]

00:27:44   yeah it's a wonderful time so that was [TS]

00:27:47   that the surprise [TS]

00:27:48   Oh of the surprise i said i have [TS]

00:27:51   surprise [TS]

00:27:51   well the surprise was that I was going [TS]

00:27:53   to call you from maximum fun had that's [TS]

00:27:54   so cool [TS]

00:27:55   ya casi question of course um so if you [TS]

00:28:01   are open to considering the idea that [TS]

00:28:04   there are times in the past when you've [TS]

00:28:07   been more up and down [TS]

00:28:09   yeah mom at app when you look back on [TS]

00:28:13   this times can you recognize in [TS]

00:28:16   retrospect that you were a little bit up [TS]

00:28:17   at the time but when you look back at [TS]

00:28:19   like a couple three episodes from the [TS]

00:28:20   past whatever 10 15 20 years are you [TS]

00:28:23   able to look at you oh yeah I was [TS]

00:28:24   probably a little bit manic yeah yeah I [TS]

00:28:27   mean now that you've maybe got a name [TS]

00:28:28   for it maybe provisional [TS]

00:28:30   can you kind of see it it's easier to [TS]

00:28:32   see the times when you're really [TS]

00:28:34   cratering who I'm because you just leave [TS]

00:28:38   a much darker streak on the on the on [TS]

00:28:42   your personal timeline [TS]

00:28:43   it's like stick your thumb on the ink [TS]

00:28:45   pad and just scraping across those three [TS]

00:28:48   months of the calendar right just like [TS]

00:28:50   lork yep but when you when you start to [TS]

00:28:56   of in my case when I start to put [TS]

00:28:58   together the like well that was the [TS]

00:29:01   summer that I burned because I was [TS]

00:29:03   depressed and they didn't nothing [TS]

00:29:05   happened and that was them that was a [TS]

00:29:07   dark time and then that was a and then [TS]

00:29:10   over here that was a dark time and then [TS]

00:29:12   you look at the times in between and you [TS]

00:29:16   know there's some normalcy in there but [TS]

00:29:17   there's also like oh that's kind of when [TS]

00:29:18   i recorded the first long winters record [TS]

00:29:20   and you know oh right so I was really [TS]

00:29:24   depressed for four months and then there [TS]

00:29:28   are a couple of months in there and then [TS]

00:29:29   I recorded a record where I was like [TS]

00:29:31   what i wrote a bunch of songs and was in [TS]

00:29:34   the studio 18 hours a day and then I was [TS]

00:29:37   normal for a while and then I was really [TS]

00:29:39   depressed you can't show Oh maybe maybe [TS]

00:29:43   those maybe I made those records and [TS]

00:29:46   went on those long long long crazy tours [TS]

00:29:48   and walked across Europe and rode a [TS]

00:29:53   motorcycle you know from Seattle to [TS]

00:29:55   Kansas without any tools or luggage and [TS]

00:30:02   certainly that's seven-sided like that [TS]

00:30:03   sucks appear [TS]

00:30:04   yeah and you're like well maybe there's [TS]

00:30:06   a connection between those things to [TS]

00:30:07   write which which I always felt like was [TS]

00:30:10   just my normal personality and and I was [TS]

00:30:13   plagued by depression which felt like a [TS]

00:30:16   foreigner rights which people i have [TS]

00:30:20   this is not clinical advice I'm just [TS]

00:30:21   saying things I've heard and I've heard [TS]

00:30:23   that is from people who know these [TS]

00:30:25   things that bipolar is frequently [TS]

00:30:29   misdiagnosed as depression and then you [TS]

00:30:31   end up giving almost exactly the wrong [TS]

00:30:33   drugs as a result so i never i had [TS]

00:30:37   several manic episodes where it was [TS]

00:30:39   clearly where I was clearly peaking and [TS]

00:30:43   people [TS]

00:30:43   would say things to me like are you like [TS]

00:30:47   are you sure like um you know where I [TS]

00:30:51   was very much and you know I never went [TS]

00:30:53   to vegas and like gambled my house but [TS]

00:30:56   you know several episodes like that but [TS]

00:30:58   for the most part when I was high when I [TS]

00:31:02   was having when I was not feeling mania [TS]

00:31:04   that felt great and normal felt like the [TS]

00:31:07   person I wanted to be so I never [TS]

00:31:10   diagnosed those as a problem and the [TS]

00:31:15   only reason that it's that I even went [TS]

00:31:17   to a psychiatrist was that those times [TS]

00:31:19   had been getting lower and lower like it [TS]

00:31:22   wasn't it the depression the depressions [TS]

00:31:24   were getting lower and lower but also I [TS]

00:31:27   wasn't ever soaring right and so he [TS]

00:31:31   looks like overtime just to be clear you [TS]

00:31:32   like when you look back out at six [TS]

00:31:34   months a year or whatever later you know [TS]

00:31:35   we see I like your notion of the crater [TS]

00:31:38   as a creator cannot only be deep but [TS]

00:31:42   wide and you can kind of gauge like how [TS]

00:31:44   hard that your head for him or for how [TS]

00:31:46   long right [TS]

00:31:47   we think about like losing a summer or [TS]

00:31:48   something even look at that in [TS]

00:31:50   retrospect an identifier for what it was [TS]

00:31:52   yeah and how bad it was yeah and it felt [TS]

00:31:54   like well there's three that's three [TS]

00:31:56   months that that's gone but that's not [TS]

00:31:58   that big of a deal [TS]

00:31:59   um it's not that big a deal to lose [TS]

00:32:03   three months [TS]

00:32:04   it doesn't feel worth taking medicine [TS]

00:32:08   I'm because it's not it's not three [TS]

00:32:11   months out of every six it's like three [TS]

00:32:13   months every couple of years or three [TS]

00:32:14   months every 18 months but when I [TS]

00:32:18   stopped when I stop getting them the [TS]

00:32:21   peaks like for the last five years the [TS]

00:32:25   best I was was coping coping was like [TS]

00:32:31   the best I could report and the rest of [TS]

00:32:35   the time I was scraping just just [TS]

00:32:39   scraping the undercarriage on them on [TS]

00:32:42   the on-ramp like like going to whether [TS]

00:32:47   it wasn't enough to stop the vehicle but [TS]

00:32:49   I definitely made the right less fun [TS]

00:32:51   well you can just like you just know [TS]

00:32:52   you're doing damage you're doing damage [TS]

00:32:54   to the under care [TS]

00:32:55   right and so going in and talking to the [TS]

00:32:59   to this guy and hearing him say like the [TS]

00:33:01   problem with bipolar is as you get older [TS]

00:33:03   your bottoms get lower and your tops get [TS]

00:33:06   lower to the was just like that's [TS]

00:33:08   exactly what it feels like [TS]

00:33:10   so anyway I'm taking this crazy stuff [TS]

00:33:14   and like I don't feel anymore i don't [TS]

00:33:19   feel medicated at all i just feel very [TS]

00:33:21   very faintly the very edge of my [TS]

00:33:24   periphery a kind of twinkle or or buzzed [TS]

00:33:31   his maybe like it just a tiny little bit [TS]

00:33:34   of not static but some awareness at the [TS]

00:33:40   edge of my vision that there's something [TS]

00:33:43   different huh [TS]

00:33:45   and it feels a little bit in some ways [TS]

00:33:47   like like a supporting hand so [TS]

00:33:51   interesting you should say that one [TS]

00:33:54   thing it's a lot like Buddhism you don't [TS]

00:33:57   really you don't really you don't really [TS]

00:33:59   notice what normal feels like until you [TS]

00:34:00   don't have it anymore and the easiest [TS]

00:34:02   example that anybody can call to mind is [TS]

00:34:04   when you suddenly get a terrible cold [TS]

00:34:06   and you get one of those that is a cold [TS]

00:34:07   but that kind of like where you're [TS]

00:34:08   wrecked or two or three weeks and 4 1st [TS]

00:34:11   for another and it's not the same thing [TS]

00:34:13   it's an analogy but you you feel like [TS]

00:34:15   you're getting worse and worse and worse [TS]

00:34:16   and worse or source and then finally at [TS]

00:34:18   some point like three weeks in you have [TS]

00:34:19   a day where you wake up and you feel [TS]

00:34:21   this is a very important phrase in my [TS]

00:34:22   life where you feel less bad like his [TS]

00:34:25   mother called hey are you three feeling [TS]

00:34:27   better and i would say you know i'm not [TS]

00:34:28   feeling better but I'm feeling less bad [TS]

00:34:30   and that's a nice day because you [TS]

00:34:32   realize if there's a possibility at that [TS]

00:34:34   point you don't know how long you're [TS]

00:34:35   going to be sick but you do know that if [TS]

00:34:37   you're feeling a little bit less bad day [TS]

00:34:39   after day that's a really good trend and [TS]

00:34:42   finally maybe three or four days and you [TS]

00:34:43   wake up and you don't feel normal [TS]

00:34:47   but you don't feel like you're getting [TS]

00:34:47   sicker and you feel like it's just [TS]

00:34:49   getting closer to what normal might feel [TS]

00:34:51   like you're still sick but you don't [TS]

00:34:54   feel engulfed by the sickness [TS]

00:34:56   mhm that's what that reminds me of is [TS]

00:34:59   that feeling of like you know I'm not [TS]

00:35:02   high but I'm feeling a little bit more [TS]

00:35:04   normal and normal actually feels weird [TS]

00:35:06   now because this is not what I've been [TS]

00:35:08   used to i'm not used to [TS]

00:35:09   feeling depressed or anxious all the [TS]

00:35:10   time like this seems strange should be [TS]

00:35:13   depressed and anxious about this [TS]

00:35:14   no well it didn't stick that's [TS]

00:35:16   interesting this seems like a good trend [TS]

00:35:18   yeah and also and also just be super [TS]

00:35:20   quickly what the string that said to me [TS]

00:35:22   about what that stuff does lipitor and [TS]

00:35:24   why are we putting it out so that no I [TS]

00:35:27   don't think so [TS]

00:35:27   all right little O mcdonnell/the [TS]

00:35:30   wouldn't order to look at or help your [TS]

00:35:33   dick cheney heart are you think it helps [TS]

00:35:34   your heart fats ya the way he described [TS]

00:35:37   it was if you can imagine that you're an [TS]

00:35:39   easy you know I admittedly this is again [TS]

00:35:41   another analogy a big analogy but if you [TS]

00:35:43   think about your personality being a [TS]

00:35:44   roughly the consistency of like unfixed [TS]

00:35:47   gelatin you think about it in a box [TS]

00:35:50   the problem is a lot of the ways that we [TS]

00:35:51   the feelings that we get the personality [TS]

00:35:54   aspects that we get 10 to look like we [TS]

00:35:57   find a lot of that gelatin kind of going [TS]

00:35:59   down to this one end of the box and the [TS]

00:36:01   problem is when you're trying to deal [TS]

00:36:02   with something like bipolar you don't [TS]

00:36:04   want to give somebody so much stuff that [TS]

00:36:05   makes all the jelly fly to the other end [TS]

00:36:07   what you want is it just you can almost [TS]

00:36:09   think you think about it just gelatin [TS]

00:36:11   almost like pizza dough where you want [TS]

00:36:13   this thing to be this the same flatness [TS]

00:36:15   all-around not to be without effect but [TS]

00:36:17   to not have big second bits are huge [TS]

00:36:19   spikes and that's what this the stuff [TS]

00:36:21   does it's not gonna make you feel [TS]

00:36:23   hi it's not going to give you a rush [TS]

00:36:25   just in the sense that it's going to [TS]

00:36:27   keep you from having lows and highs and [TS]

00:36:29   it just happens that you get people for [TS]

00:36:31   I think grand mal seizures and it seems [TS]

00:36:34   to kind of work for some people off [TS]

00:36:35   label especially for the side effects of [TS]

00:36:37   ADHD medicines but even by itself it can [TS]

00:36:41   help people [TS]

00:36:41   I believe this is not medicine please [TS]

00:36:44   but i like you know go see doctor please [TS]

00:36:47   but but i can't help people who have [TS]

00:36:49   some personality balance issues he [TS]

00:36:51   thinks i to me that's least in my head [TS]

00:36:54   maybe i need more medicine but that's [TS]

00:36:56   that's that's kind of the package that's [TS]

00:36:57   what you're looking for in a day where [TS]

00:37:00   you feel less shitty is a good day even [TS]

00:37:02   if you don't feel awesome because you [TS]

00:37:04   know what feeling too awesome is not a [TS]

00:37:05   great day as you've learned [TS]

00:37:07   yes well so I'm kind of wrestling now [TS]

00:37:11   with the question is is my I'll i always [TS]

00:37:18   used to feel that my normal personality [TS]

00:37:19   was [TS]

00:37:22   capable at any moment of buying an RV [TS]

00:37:25   and driving off the lot to California [TS]

00:37:27   that just felt like who I was [TS]

00:37:31   some people are waiting to get jumped in [TS]

00:37:33   an alley other people are waiting to [TS]

00:37:35   fall in love just knowing it could be [TS]

00:37:37   somebody out there when I walk into a [TS]

00:37:38   room I could meet my mate for life you [TS]

00:37:40   you're walking around you know this [TS]

00:37:42   could be the day this week the day is [TS]

00:37:43   gonna be the RV day I might fall in love [TS]

00:37:45   with an RB today I might actually I met [TS]

00:37:47   blender truck stop and fall in love with [TS]

00:37:49   a girl and take her in the RV but when [TS]

00:37:54   it but so now i'm now I'm wondering [TS]

00:37:58   basically I don't want to go back to the [TS]

00:37:59   psychiatrist because I sit down in the [TS]

00:38:02   psychiatrist's office and I say and he's [TS]

00:38:05   like how's it going [TS]

00:38:06   I think great great i mean amazing and i [TS]

00:38:11   start to report some of the things that [TS]

00:38:13   I've been doing [TS]

00:38:16   haha right he might say whoa whoa [TS]

00:38:20   we have got to adjust the dosage because [TS]

00:38:23   that also that seems a little radical [TS]

00:38:25   and he say hang on a minute give me a [TS]

00:38:27   projector have a 193 slide presentation [TS]

00:38:30   I'd like to show you but it's got [TS]

00:38:31   animations gonna guess that found out on [TS]

00:38:34   that exactly have you first of all what [TS]

00:38:36   you need to do is follow me on instagram [TS]

00:38:37   but second of all um no I don't want to [TS]

00:38:41   adjust the medication like I'm very [TS]

00:38:43   intrigued by this present amount of what [TS]

00:38:48   feels like a fairly stable state which [TS]

00:38:51   is elevated over any recent like stable [TS]

00:38:57   level that I've had in the last five [TS]

00:38:59   years and if that is the new normal for [TS]

00:39:03   me that's wonderful and i will keep [TS]

00:39:06   taking exactly this dosage I don't want [TS]

00:39:08   anymore I don't want any less I'm just [TS]

00:39:10   fine [TS]

00:39:11   like let me work this out myself i may [TS]

00:39:14   go bankrupt [TS]

00:39:15   I'm a for a while have three or four [TS]

00:39:22   different vintage fill sandbags coming [TS]

00:39:24   in the mail from ebay that i bought in [TS]

00:39:25   the middle of the night and i can i can [TS]

00:39:28   i can find a home for those and i can [TS]

00:39:32   make more money just let me work this [TS]

00:39:34   out [TS]

00:39:35   don't don't mess around with me but he [TS]

00:39:38   may say like no this is a dangerous like [TS]

00:39:40   basically buying a vintage RV is one of [TS]

00:39:43   the signs in the dsm-5 that a person is [TS]

00:39:45   over medicated and I don't want to hear [TS]

00:39:48   that this hacker to buy vintage RV daily [TS]

00:39:51   for more than six months just feel like [TS]

00:39:53   don't mess around with me right now I'm [TS]

00:39:56   okay it's not a thing you know it does [TS]

00:39:58   not feel at all like this is a [TS]

00:40:00   medication that I would want to abuse [TS]

00:40:01   i'm never gonna take two of them because [TS]

00:40:04   I don't feel it i just feel it would be [TS]

00:40:09   it would be like wanting to take more [TS]

00:40:10   penicillin [TS]

00:40:11   yeah right exactly you're looking to [TS]

00:40:13   take more antabuse it's like it's not [TS]

00:40:15   gonna it's not gonna be that fun but [TS]

00:40:17   we'll see [TS]

00:40:18   right i mean because they're there are [TS]

00:40:20   plenty of instances in the past where it [TS]

00:40:23   felt very normal but I was in a mania [TS]

00:40:25   and i did wake up in Morocco and if i [TS]

00:40:31   wake up in Morocco at any point I know [TS]

00:40:33   that I've gone too far right buddy you [TS]

00:40:35   need you need to give these bullet [TS]

00:40:37   points to a buddy right it's sort of [TS]

00:40:39   like you know what you know saying like [TS]

00:40:40   you want if i come to you and say let's [TS]

00:40:43   go to Morocco no matter how kind of what [TS]

00:40:46   you hear in there don't open the [TS]

00:40:47   two-dimensional after 11pm you know to [TS]

00:40:51   lock me in in the in the bathroom if you [TS]

00:40:54   receive a collect call from Morocco and [TS]

00:40:56   I'm asking you to buy a filter bag for [TS]

00:40:58   me right there are the net [TS]

00:41:00   that's right throw the net call Interpol [TS]

00:41:02   so so it so anyway the next few months [TS]

00:41:06   are going to be very interesting [TS]

00:41:07   yeah we'll just see how that will see [TS]

00:41:10   how this pans out [TS]

00:41:11   i'm here at maximum fun i feel like i [TS]

00:41:14   could just live here [TS]

00:41:15   I feel like they could you know there's [TS]

00:41:16   a there's an empty desk feel like I [TS]

00:41:19   could settle in [TS]

00:41:20   I bet they'd love that great would be [TS]

00:41:21   just be walking around people John [TS]

00:41:23   what's going to I got to get going we're [TS]

00:41:25   all you know over the old American [TS]

00:41:27   cement company building [TS]

00:41:28   yeah I would love to say that I got a [TS]

00:41:30   desk over there the problem is as you [TS]

00:41:31   know i'm i'm useless for doing jobs [TS]

00:41:34   yours until you stop don't you stop that [TS]

00:41:37   John Roderick you useless for most jobs [TS]

00:41:39   let's be honest but there's probably [TS]

00:41:40   there's a very special place for a very [TS]

00:41:42   special little guy out there [TS]

00:41:43   yeah you know food maybe maybe just he [TS]

00:41:46   would get a little matching but slightly [TS]

00:41:48   small [TS]

00:41:48   autodesk matching his desk and then [TS]

00:41:51   scooted up so that hit the small [TS]

00:41:53   slightly smaller desk was facing his [TS]

00:41:55   desk so I would sit and look at him [TS]

00:41:57   while i was working and he would come [TS]

00:41:58   and he would love that he would look [TS]

00:42:00   he'd be looking at it at the that the [TS]

00:42:02   pictures of his family on the desk [TS]

00:42:04   trying to avoid eye contact with me [TS]

00:42:06   yeah you know after six or eight weeks i [TS]

00:42:07   bet that'd be even more fun and he's [TS]

00:42:09   super into it i have a desk blotter and [TS]

00:42:11   I would just be sketching him all day [TS]

00:42:13   but you could cowork maybe until they [TS]

00:42:15   find the right position for you and that [TS]

00:42:16   maximum fun Corp but maybe you could [TS]

00:42:18   work i'm watching just be thrown at his [TS]

00:42:21   desk right now through you kidding me [TS]

00:42:22   he's not he doesn't he doesn't know i'm [TS]

00:42:24   watching see podcasting he's looking at [TS]

00:42:26   a computer [TS]

00:42:27   his hands are poised on the keyboard but [TS]

00:42:29   he's not pushing any buttons what he's [TS]

00:42:31   out know he had a finger poised over [TS]

00:42:33   some I bet his up at his hands are very [TS]

00:42:36   very supple their soft bodies a gentle [TS]

00:42:38   lover but you're gonna be the one [TS]

00:42:41   working there you'll find out [TS]

00:42:42   that's right i mean he's always pulling [TS]

00:42:43   on his beard now he's now he's like [TS]

00:42:45   pushing on his I the sides of his eyes [TS]

00:42:47   which is a weird save some of this for [TS]

00:42:49   your show with Dan you're right you're [TS]

00:42:51   right i'm so this is an exciting time I [TS]

00:42:56   but you know let's keep it positive for [TS]

00:42:59   a minute just for a minute first of all [TS]

00:43:01   congratulations on writing some stuff [TS]

00:43:03   oh yeah thank you that's been a total [TS]

00:43:05   you've been pushing for a while and that [TS]

00:43:06   must be a great feeling well it was a [TS]

00:43:08   little weird I wrote it I was writing [TS]

00:43:09   this song and it was definitely like a [TS]

00:43:11   song for me it was a song where I was [TS]

00:43:16   exploring some of the major themes of my [TS]

00:43:19   work sitting at the piano when I was [TS]

00:43:21   writing slow dirge about how love is a [TS]

00:43:24   shitshow and then I got to a point you [TS]

00:43:27   should send that one to Pat Benatar love [TS]

00:43:30   is a shit no is a shitshow don't get to [TS]

00:43:33   people i don't think pad is taking [TS]

00:43:37   submissions now but I was talking to Amy [TS]

00:43:40   separately and she was like I'm working [TS]

00:43:41   on a new record and herpa derpa derp and [TS]

00:43:45   and then I was separately writing this [TS]

00:43:49   song and I you know and and I was going [TS]

00:43:52   through my normal process which was i [TS]

00:43:54   wrote a thing i liked it then I was [TS]

00:43:56   trying to make it better and I couldn't [TS]

00:43:58   make it better [TS]

00:43:59   I was trying to try this i tried that [TS]

00:44:02   that word was wrong i tried to make it [TS]

00:44:04   better and i just made it worse was kind [TS]

00:44:07   of falling down all around me a little [TS]

00:44:09   bit of a sugar castle and I got to that [TS]

00:44:12   point where I was like I thought that I [TS]

00:44:15   was onto something i thought i had [TS]

00:44:16   written a good thing but it turns out [TS]

00:44:18   that it's garbage and there's no way [TS]

00:44:21   through here I can't get to the other [TS]

00:44:24   side and I kind of set it aside and then [TS]

00:44:28   for whatever reason [TS]

00:44:30   possibly because I've been doing that [TS]

00:44:32   for for several years possibly this [TS]

00:44:35   lipitor not actually lipitor let me [TS]

00:44:41   limit or ask your doctor if whatever [TS]

00:44:44   this is right for you [TS]

00:44:45   um cause me to go back to this this like [TS]

00:44:50   unformed slightly dissolved song and I i [TS]

00:44:56   went back to it and took it apart [TS]

00:44:58   basically eliminated almost all the [TS]

00:45:02   lyrics but but used keywords to write a [TS]

00:45:04   new set of words that were way better [TS]

00:45:06   and then the chorus suggested itself and [TS]

00:45:10   all of a sudden I had a song I'd built [TS]

00:45:11   by taking this dissolved cat sugar [TS]

00:45:14   castle and had what you know i had a [TS]

00:45:16   like him i had a tent city in the desert [TS]

00:45:19   all of a sudden and that is a familiar [TS]

00:45:22   process for me that's how I wrote songs [TS]

00:45:26   that's why I've always written songs you [TS]

00:45:28   write a thing unless it's perfect the [TS]

00:45:31   first time you end up having to take it [TS]

00:45:34   apart and that's hard to do it's it's um [TS]

00:45:37   there's a certain amount of suffering [TS]

00:45:40   involved but then you come out the other [TS]

00:45:43   side with the thing that you could not [TS]

00:45:44   have predicted you couldn't have seen [TS]

00:45:46   that this was the gonna be the end [TS]

00:45:47   result when you started and so I did all [TS]

00:45:51   that and I had this thing and I was very [TS]

00:45:53   close to finishing it and then again [TS]

00:45:57   maybe it's the maybe it's the like a [TS]

00:46:02   ladder rail or whatever it is but I said [TS]

00:46:11   hey aimee mann's working on a new record [TS]

00:46:12   we were just talking about it and I just [TS]

00:46:14   send it to our spontaneous [TS]

00:46:16   made a recording into my iphone of me [TS]

00:46:20   sitting at the piano going here's a song [TS]

00:46:21   i hope you like it song and then send it [TS]

00:46:25   like sensitive little with a little file [TS]

00:46:28   from the iphone recording and she wrote [TS]

00:46:31   back was like that's amazing [TS]

00:46:34   what do you want me to do when I was [TS]

00:46:35   like I don't finish it and so Amy [TS]

00:46:37   doesn't let any grass grow she finished [TS]

00:46:40   in two days and she did a very [TS]

00:46:42   interesting thing which was took [TS]

00:46:44   ownership of it like I sent it to her it [TS]

00:46:49   would I proposed a collaboration she [TS]

00:46:53   accepted that proposal at which point [TS]

00:46:57   the song became her because she's gonna [TS]

00:47:00   put it on her record and so and it was [TS]

00:47:03   unfinished right I didn't say like [TS]

00:47:04   here's a here's my finished complete [TS]

00:47:07   work was like here's the thing want to [TS]

00:47:09   want to co-write with me and she was [TS]

00:47:11   like yes and went boom and then the song [TS]

00:47:14   went away from me [TS]

00:47:17   Wow and she took she went through the [TS]

00:47:20   lyrics and that every instance where [TS]

00:47:23   there was a line that was very John [TS]

00:47:27   Roderick in the sense that it was very [TS]

00:47:32   impressionist aqui [TS]

00:47:34   like what i was getting at was through [TS]

00:47:37   several layers of oil paint I was you [TS]

00:47:42   know I was making starry night and she [TS]

00:47:46   went through and really sort of [TS]

00:47:48   literalized those lines and intimate [TS]

00:47:52   most in most cases it was the last line [TS]

00:47:55   of the verse and say I was standing [TS]

00:47:58   there you were in a wingback chair I was [TS]

00:48:03   climbing up the stair and then the gas [TS]

00:48:06   fires of the refinery on the edge of the [TS]

00:48:09   coast created a wave of Black Knight [TS]

00:48:14   sound of gong and she took the whole gas [TS]

00:48:21   fires line out and replaced it with a [TS]

00:48:24   shorter line that rhyme with stare at [TS]

00:48:26   the end [TS]

00:48:27   that made sense and I was like whoa whoa [TS]

00:48:31   whoa bro she's a pro yeah but I felt I [TS]

00:48:35   felt like it did three lines in a row [TS]

00:48:37   around you might want to the fourth 12 [TS]

00:48:39   yeah and not have it be about gas [TS]

00:48:41   refinery and what was the gas refinery [TS]

00:48:42   thing again and I was like what is the [TS]

00:48:43   gas refinery think I mean isn't that [TS]

00:48:45   painting that's just you need to use [TS]

00:48:47   that somewhere else John just keep it [TS]

00:48:48   before the next moment but he a seed [TS]

00:48:50   corn my friend right right seed corn but [TS]

00:48:53   so it was so emotionally it was i was [TS]

00:48:55   little bit like I haven't I have not [TS]

00:48:57   collaborated with people in this way [TS]

00:48:59   where i sent them i think i was writing [TS]

00:49:02   for myself and they took it and made it [TS]

00:49:04   for themselves but she made it sound [TS]

00:49:07   like any man song just by changing those [TS]

00:49:09   weird sentences into ones that like [TS]

00:49:14   actually fit and so I called Jonathan [TS]

00:49:17   Coleman I was like Hamlet's tell me walk [TS]

00:49:19   me through this and he said well here's [TS]

00:49:22   the thing when i write a song in [TS]

00:49:24   collaboration with somebody i do one of [TS]

00:49:26   two things either I either they sent me [TS]

00:49:28   half of the song and I try to write try [TS]

00:49:31   to finish it in their voice or I'll [TS]

00:49:33   start writing a song for someone in what [TS]

00:49:37   I imagine is their voice Wow [TS]

00:49:40   and so that song that I saying on his [TS]

00:49:42   record his last record [TS]

00:49:43   um the Nemesis he brought that to me [TS]

00:49:47   because he said I wrote this song in [TS]

00:49:50   imitation of your song right sounds a [TS]

00:49:52   lot like one of your songs [TS]

00:49:53   yeah he said this is just a song that I [TS]

00:49:55   wrote for you and it would only sound [TS]

00:49:58   appropriate will be using with using was [TS]

00:50:01   like oh that's an interesting skill you [TS]

00:50:04   have the UM you know to do impressions [TS]

00:50:07   of other people songwriting but so he [TS]

00:50:10   said when I write songs with somebody [TS]

00:50:11   I'm i do not feel proprietary about them [TS]

00:50:14   because I'm already writing them with [TS]

00:50:15   them in mind i'm not i would never [TS]

00:50:17   consider singing these myself and so [TS]

00:50:21   that was the difference i had written [TS]

00:50:22   this thing and Adam and was just writing [TS]

00:50:25   it the way I normally do which is [TS]

00:50:26   imagining myself singing it and now it's [TS]

00:50:29   taken honest it's now has a now has its [TS]

00:50:32   own life it's it's it's left me behind [TS]

00:50:34   it's like it's gone to college and [TS]

00:50:37   and I tried to call it over and say [TS]

00:50:40   how'd you get this number say that i [TS]

00:50:42   miss it you know and that but i'm still [TS]

00:50:44   there [TS]

00:50:45   whatever needs to talk to me and it is [TS]

00:50:47   busy it doesn't want it sort of sending [TS]

00:50:50   me right to voicemail [TS]

00:50:51   ok so we'll see I mean that's exciting [TS]

00:50:54   why i agree i said wow you got a lot of [TS]

00:51:01   angles hear me [TS]

00:51:03   it's a little lot of angles in play I'm [TS]

00:51:06   drinking some coffee that I got across [TS]

00:51:07   the street from the American cement [TS]

00:51:09   building a honduran restaurant haha i [TS]

00:51:11   have one in your lap in that photo Jesse [TS]

00:51:13   put up any so just just published a [TS]

00:51:15   photo of me almost a photo of you uh [TS]

00:51:17   Institute this is the thing if you [TS]

00:51:18   literally literally under glass if [TS]

00:51:20   you're following along on Instagram you [TS]

00:51:22   really you could be could be three steps [TS]

00:51:24   ahead of me [TS]

00:51:25   yeah I know I I don't but but I i catch [TS]

00:51:28   glimpses of it because you make it go to [TS]

00:51:29   Twitter and then I see your RV and it's [TS]

00:51:31   like a little game of where's waldo it's [TS]

00:51:33   a little uh you know which john parked [TS]

00:51:35   yeah where was he doing yeah the first [TS]

00:51:37   thing just he said when I walked in with [TS]

00:51:39   you like oh hey mr. Hawaiian shirt [TS]

00:51:42   november i was like saving that one for [TS]

00:51:45   years [TS]

00:51:45   okay well done i am mr. Hawaiian shirt [TS]

00:51:48   in November let's go investigate [TS]

00:51:50   somebody haha [TS]

00:51:52   Sherlock it's locked no i was i was [TS]

00:51:55   wearing a t-shirt for the last several [TS]

00:51:56   days and then when I woke up this [TS]

00:51:58   morning I was like this t-shirt has run [TS]

00:52:01   its course [TS]

00:52:01   yeah i'm gonna start i'm going to start [TS]

00:52:03   going to start scaring little kids with [TS]

00:52:06   this is not sure so I put on the [TS]

00:52:09   Hawaiian shirt that I bought at a thrift [TS]

00:52:10   store and people I feel really good i'm [TS]

00:52:12   in a tropical climate are you gonna tell [TS]

00:52:16   us when you're coming here or will you [TS]

00:52:18   find out from Instagram you know get [TS]

00:52:20   stuff we gotta do at school and all [TS]

00:52:22   right you guys have like your lives that [TS]

00:52:24   you live somewhere yeah is it we we give [TS]

00:52:26   us some kind of rough sense of like like [TS]

00:52:28   when you're at the bridge or something [TS]

00:52:29   yeah it's later on this week okay great [TS]

00:52:31   san francisco right [TS]

00:52:33   Oh like the type that in right here on [TS]

00:52:35   my my scheduling machine later three [TS]

00:52:38   I think maybe the three nights a week [TS]

00:52:40   three nights in San Francisco [TS]

00:52:43   okay terrific two of them have i'm [TS]

00:52:45   playing shows at some venue that I don't [TS]

00:52:47   know with the with this calf or [TS]

00:52:50   mentioned [TS]

00:52:50   master of exciting young performers [TS]

00:52:53   these kids are doing great stuff today [TS]

00:52:54   John are you falling with young people [TS]

00:52:56   are doing with music [TS]

00:52:57   well yeah you know I so the song I wrote [TS]

00:53:01   for amy is actually an EDM track and [TS]

00:53:03   doesn't have a drop i worked for hours [TS]

00:53:07   on the drop bears just like they just [TS]

00:53:09   want to put it in the exact perfect spot [TS]

00:53:11   so we really really rob it is it's about [TS]

00:53:13   it's about where you place the drop and [TS]

00:53:16   what you want to do is you want to [TS]

00:53:17   create tension by not delivering the [TS]

00:53:21   drop know you want people to wait for it [TS]

00:53:24   and want it again a gentle lover [TS]

00:53:26   it's coming just not yet here it comes [TS]

00:53:29   soft soft fingers and once it comes you [TS]

00:53:34   know it's just one big splash right here [TS]

00:53:36   one drop right one drop and then pow [TS]

00:53:39   yep and that's unless puts a lot of [TS]

00:53:42   pressure on the drop em you know what I [TS]

00:53:44   mean that's in the author of the drop [TS]

00:53:45   Itoh one shot at that you get one shot [TS]

00:53:48   do not miss your chance to blow this [TS]

00:53:51   opportunity comes once in a lifetime [TS]

00:53:53   mmm thinking of a master plan [TS]

00:53:56   nothing but sweat inside my hand what's [TS]

00:54:00   going on in your life [TS]

00:54:02   I mean nothing nothing ya know you know [TS]

00:54:04   all the same time I'm not going to [TS]

00:54:05   attempt to compete with you on this [TS]

00:54:07   youyou've having your Jesse studio yeah [TS]

00:54:11   I don't want to waste his time he's [TS]

00:54:12   probably other stuff to get the guy that [TS]

00:54:14   got have the flophouse guys come in [TS]

00:54:15   together the canadian guy with the beard [TS]

00:54:16   gotta be there [TS]

00:54:17   podcasting brothers in the brothers and [TS]

00:54:19   brothers got all these people they'll [TS]

00:54:21   come into that office [TS]

00:54:22   do they know sure they do know they make [TS]

00:54:24   podcast those the the the my brothers [TS]

00:54:27   and me is make the podcast in North [TS]

00:54:29   Carolina mountains or something I don't [TS]

00:54:31   know [TS]

00:54:31   no i don't know that i think the [TS]

00:54:32   flophouse act like they're at dan's [TS]

00:54:34   house but i think they actually other [TS]

00:54:35   than I think they actually probably go [TS]

00:54:36   you should listen to fall apart house [TS]

00:54:37   it's a very good program also i'm in [TS]

00:54:39   this studio and there are few things [TS]

00:54:40   that are there a little bit [TS]

00:54:42   well they're a little bit different from [TS]

00:54:44   my gosh you know what come up you'll [TS]

00:54:45   forgive me John I'm busy talking about [TS]

00:54:47   the limit the drill got my head up my [TS]

00:54:49   ass [TS]

00:54:49   tell me a little bit about what it's [TS]

00:54:50   like to be in Jesse studio oh yeah well [TS]

00:54:53   you steam anything yet when you have a [TS]

00:54:54   chance to steam something you could go [TS]

00:54:56   get your shirt out of the car and steam [TS]

00:54:57   it i thought that maybe I would go to a [TS]

00:54:59   store right now and buy a couple of [TS]

00:55:01   suits just to come in and steam them as [TS]

00:55:03   there's we think he's kind of wrinkled I [TS]

00:55:04   don't know if I want this there's a [TS]

00:55:05   shout there's not only a shower here in [TS]

00:55:07   this officers a bathtub and I'm [TS]

00:55:09   wondering i'm seriously since I walked [TS]

00:55:11   in here open [TS]

00:55:12   I've been just sitting and thinking like [TS]

00:55:13   okay what is the propriety of me just [TS]

00:55:16   taking a bath at me a question is the [TS]

00:55:19   bathtub in the same physical room as the [TS]

00:55:23   primary toilet [TS]

00:55:24   no oh yes don't take a bath because [TS]

00:55:26   somebody has used it as a guest bath [TS]

00:55:28   during a party [TS]

00:55:30   well i don't i'm not sure they've ever [TS]

00:55:31   had a party here there's really no i'm [TS]

00:55:33   not sure that they party business [TS]

00:55:34   business business right i mean Matthew I [TS]

00:55:36   mean I've been to a lot of Max fun [TS]

00:55:38   parties and I don't think anyone has [TS]

00:55:41   ever used a bathtub from for a party and [TS]

00:55:45   I'm a different kind of that it's a [TS]

00:55:46   classy crowd it's a google glass here [TS]

00:55:48   it's their little bit more there [TS]

00:55:50   discerning but I'm just trying to think [TS]

00:55:51   like how much of a violation of [TS]

00:55:53   everyone's psycho-sexual space it would [TS]

00:55:58   be for me to just be like can I take a [TS]

00:55:59   bath here and then just I'd be in the [TS]

00:56:02   bath there are unfailingly polite is the [TS]

00:56:04   thing they're having a hard being [TS]

00:56:05   English in a lot of wear super polite [TS]

00:56:07   and they would you know no one would [TS]

00:56:08   want to say no but they're all sitting [TS]

00:56:11   at their desks and this is the also the [TS]

00:56:13   worthy go to the bathroom [TS]

00:56:14   yeah so I just been there you know and I [TS]

00:56:16   take it to take a long you have a long [TS]

00:56:18   bath and just being there blue you [TS]

00:56:20   should give me a heads-up give him time [TS]

00:56:22   to maybe give it a good scrub you got [TS]

00:56:24   yourself a chili dog and a bathtub desk [TS]

00:56:26   and maybe pick up a suit the chicken [TS]

00:56:28   steamed come in steam suit you don't get [TS]

00:56:30   it i'm guessing there's not a bathtub in [TS]

00:56:32   the RV know there is a shower but i have [TS]

00:56:35   not yet a christened the shower [TS]

00:56:39   you're kidding me ah i was showering [TS]

00:56:41   three times a day I don't know it just [TS]

00:56:43   feels a little bit like I a boy once you [TS]

00:56:46   start showering in there you you've [TS]

00:56:48   crossed a kind of rubicon where your [TS]

00:56:52   fate is sealed like sharing a needle [TS]

00:56:54   John it's like that's when you've really [TS]

00:56:56   you become part of the RV people will [TS]

00:56:58   bathe in it you have to take Rome at [TS]

00:57:00   that point because because you've [TS]

00:57:03   declared war just by classic crossing [TS]

00:57:04   the room cancer back so i don't know i [TS]

00:57:08   mean i'm gonna do it [TS]

00:57:09   it has to be done i hope so but I'm just [TS]

00:57:12   I'm just I'm sitting there by parked off [TS]

00:57:13   melrose i'm at the corner of Melrose [TS]

00:57:16   into [TS]

00:57:16   spare and I just picture myself getting [TS]

00:57:19   in the shower all around me people are [TS]

00:57:21   walking really small dogs [TS]

00:57:23   ladies and gentlemen just feels don't [TS]

00:57:25   want to disturb your day I know you're [TS]

00:57:27   busy making films and boots but could [TS]

00:57:30   help out down-on-his-luck musician whose [TS]

00:57:31   bathing innovation it feels like I [TS]

00:57:34   should have one of those good sam club [TS]

00:57:35   stickers on the back of my RV I don't [TS]

00:57:38   know that's code that serious code good [TS]

00:57:40   sam club [TS]

00:57:41   oh you think what do you think that's [TS]

00:57:42   key party I wasn't gonna say it i was [TS]

00:57:44   gonna say i think yes primarily sure [TS]

00:57:46   it's about helping out a brother or [TS]

00:57:48   sister friend when they're having [TS]

00:57:49   trouble with their RV but it's also a [TS]

00:57:52   little bit about you know back in the [TS]

00:57:54   queen-size yeah you put upon pull your [TS]

00:57:56   RV up into the slot next to my RV we [TS]

00:57:59   were little because the other keys now [TS]

00:58:01   we don't have been that's right Willie [TS]

00:58:05   the world like it's okay well speaking [TS]

00:58:06   of a it will leave a light on for you [TS]

00:58:08   atlanta for you [TS]

00:58:09   yeah speaking of good sam club so GM [TS]

00:58:12   cr-v culture has a thing called the [TS]

00:58:15   black list and when I heard about the [TS]

00:58:18   black list at first I was like really [TS]

00:58:20   the black list [TS]

00:58:22   really you guys you're all [TS]

00:58:25   eighty-five-year-old boeing engineers is [TS]

00:58:28   it really called the black list they're [TS]

00:58:30   like the blacklist you need to get the [TS]

00:58:32   black list [TS]

00:58:33   I can't wait to hear the black list is [TS]

00:58:35   ok for me to know if I haven't been [TS]

00:58:36   initiated [TS]

00:58:37   well this is the thing is if the [TS]

00:58:38   blacklist it's just like limit until if [TS]

00:58:41   you don't have a GMC RV the blacklist [TS]

00:58:45   means nothing to you [TS]

00:58:46   oh I get it I get it it only matters if [TS]

00:58:49   you have a GMC RV and with the black [TS]

00:58:50   list is is a list of people nationwide [TS]

00:58:53   who are GMC aficionados Oh Who if you're [TS]

00:59:00   in trouble you're in a scrape scrape in [TS]

00:59:03   Shasta California you are a little bit [TS]

00:59:05   off the road in peoria illinois go to [TS]

00:59:09   the black list call somebody [TS]

00:59:11   it's like the wolf like the wolf it [TS]

00:59:14   comes out and cleans up [TS]

00:59:16   that's right comes out it is acura nsx [TS]

00:59:18   huh never touches the thing just issues [TS]

00:59:21   some orders yet there were two point the [TS]

00:59:24   hose that's right and then splits with [TS]

00:59:25   drunken sex sister [TS]

00:59:27   that's right mhm [TS]

00:59:29   um so I'm outside eugene i pull over [TS]

00:59:34   into one of those rest stops to rest i [TS]

00:59:38   get out [TS]

00:59:39   I you know I'm i do a visual check and I [TS]

00:59:43   see antifreeze pouring out from [TS]

00:59:44   underneath the vehicle shit which you [TS]

00:59:47   don't have to be a mechanic to know is a [TS]

00:59:49   is contraindicated for continuing to [TS]

00:59:52   move down the road so I go fill a milk [TS]

00:59:55   carton well somebody else in RV pulls up [TS]

00:59:57   in there like they see me looking [TS]

00:59:59   panicked and they have [TS]

00:59:59   panicked and they have [TS]

01:00:00   me they go back into their RV in handy a [TS]

01:00:02   milk jug there like fill it up with for [TS]

01:00:05   water and get you down the road [TS]

01:00:06   I was like thank you RV brother but it [TS]

01:00:09   wasn't a GMC RV with someone tell Large [TS]

01:00:11   Marge sent you [TS]

01:00:12   yeah like you know I gave them i gave [TS]

01:00:15   them some kind of Masonic sign and they [TS]

01:00:17   looked confused [TS]

01:00:18   we only had the thing that really have [TS]

01:00:21   the city gave them make them like the [TS]

01:00:23   American Sign Language sign for hungry [TS]

01:00:25   kids like like you're like little babies [TS]

01:00:28   deal with a they make points with the [TS]

01:00:30   fingers and him together to say more [TS]

01:00:31   more more MORE [TS]

01:00:33   but i but I filled it up with water and [TS]

01:00:35   I drove to Eugene and I called a guy on [TS]

01:00:37   the black list [TS]

01:00:39   whoa and he answers the phone his name [TS]

01:00:42   is Kelvin I was like that's apropos [TS]

01:00:45   that's a code name John and I said hey [TS]

01:00:48   is this company was like yeah and i said [TS]

01:00:50   hi I'm calling from the black list and [TS]

01:00:51   he was like oh tell me more [TS]

01:00:54   I said I'm on the highway and I'm [TS]

01:00:56   training and fries and he was like well [TS]

01:01:00   I can't come get you and I said no I [TS]

01:01:01   mobile and he said oh good [TS]

01:01:03   come here immediately so I'm driving [TS]

01:01:08   through eugene all of a sudden through [TS]

01:01:10   the two neighborhoods out in like west [TS]

01:01:13   eugene I pull into this guy's driveway I [TS]

01:01:16   see his GM cr-v underneath them [TS]

01:01:19   RV cover in the back and in the front is [TS]

01:01:24   a classic like 67 Datsun b210 b210 wagon [TS]

01:01:33   custom wagon I was like that's a cool [TS]

01:01:35   car he comes out he's like we're [TS]

01:01:37   watching the oregon game [TS]

01:01:39   are you sure your water pump is busted [TS]

01:01:42   it might be something else and we get [TS]

01:01:43   under we look at it was like oh yeah [TS]

01:01:45   it's a water pump was like no he's like [TS]

01:01:48   it's friday at five o'clock [TS]

01:01:50   no place is going to be open us no place [TS]

01:01:53   is going to be open on Sunday you can [TS]

01:01:55   sleep in my bar but don't touch my [TS]

01:01:57   daughter [TS]

01:01:57   that's right i was like man this sucks [TS]

01:01:59   you know i'm headed down to California [TS]

01:02:01   was like yeah and then I kind of said [TS]

01:02:06   like well I mean shit [TS]

01:02:08   wherever it is I go I'm gonna be there [TS]

01:02:10   till monday basically sleeping in [TS]

01:02:13   somebody's driveway and he was like hmm [TS]

01:02:18   his wife was yelling at the TV about the [TS]

01:02:20   football game and he's sitting there [TS]

01:02:22   he's pulling on his fingers and he's [TS]

01:02:23   like this probably isn't how the [TS]

01:02:26   blacklist works this is not exactly it's [TS]

01:02:29   not an extended-stay it's not a tumble [TS]

01:02:30   debt situation well it that's the thing [TS]

01:02:32   know and so and then he starts bass part [TS]

01:02:34   starts saying to himself under his [TS]

01:02:35   breath is like really and I'm like he [TS]

01:02:41   was muttering pay it forward under his [TS]

01:02:42   breath [TS]

01:02:43   yeah and so I'm just standing i'm [TS]

01:02:44   looking at the sky at this point I'm [TS]

01:02:46   looking down at my shoes and i'm looking [TS]

01:02:47   at the sky I don't want to I don't want [TS]

01:02:49   to jinx it i don't want to do anything [TS]

01:02:50   but I don't know how to change a water [TS]

01:02:53   pump by myself in somebody's driveway [TS]

01:02:55   and the temperature was plummeting may I [TS]

01:02:58   add it was at that time 40 degrees and [TS]

01:03:02   he's like and after about five minutes [TS]

01:03:06   of us both stand there kicking the dirt [TS]

01:03:08   with our shoes he says all right let's [TS]

01:03:13   do this [TS]

01:03:14   any calls the autozone he's like do you [TS]

01:03:17   have the following part figured out what [TS]

01:03:20   the part is called them they're like [TS]

01:03:23   manufactory do is like you seriously you [TS]

01:03:25   have a UFO water pump for a 75 ultima [TS]

01:03:29   Beal and they're like yeah we do it [TS]

01:03:30   sounds haunted and he's like alright so [TS]

01:03:33   we get in his car and we drive to the [TS]

01:03:35   autozone we buy this water pump and we [TS]

01:03:37   go back to his house and he's like [TS]

01:03:38   here's the deal I'm going to be on the [TS]

01:03:41   top of the motor you're going to be on [TS]

01:03:43   the bottom laying on the ground and [TS]

01:03:45   we're going to do this and so we [TS]

01:03:47   proceeded to take off the fan and then [TS]

01:03:50   the alternator and then the power [TS]

01:03:52   steering box and then the air [TS]

01:03:55   conditioning we basically took the whole [TS]

01:03:57   front of the motor off and then took the [TS]

01:04:00   water pump off and at this point it's 33 [TS]

01:04:04   degrees and i'm lying on the ground [TS]

01:04:06   completely soaked in antifreeze oil and [TS]

01:04:11   gas and he's up in the cabin and we are [TS]

01:04:15   turning wrenches and it's one of those [TS]

01:04:17   moments where it's like if you are a [TS]

01:04:19   mechanic you look at a situation like [TS]

01:04:22   that you're like yeah it's here's what [TS]

01:04:23   we have to do we just turn these bolts [TS]

01:04:25   and move these things and [TS]

01:04:26   turn these bolts and move these things [TS]

01:04:28   and then your job is not but for me all [TS]

01:04:32   of that still seems a little bit like [TS]

01:04:34   magic or it doesn't like like an like a [TS]

01:04:38   thing I would never dare [TS]

01:04:39   it's really daring more than anything [TS]

01:04:41   and watching the whole thing go down and [TS]

01:04:43   really being in there and doing it with [TS]

01:04:45   him it's like right this there's nothing [TS]

01:04:48   about this that isn't doable it's the [TS]

01:04:51   daring to say we're just going to change [TS]

01:04:54   that we're gonna do this now because if [TS]

01:04:56   you get the water pump off and don't get [TS]

01:04:59   a new one back on then what you have is [TS]

01:05:01   a giant pile of garbage in your front [TS]

01:05:03   driveway that sits there forever you [TS]

01:05:06   know that's because they they stopped [TS]

01:05:07   daring yeah right and and that's where [TS]

01:05:09   that's why you see junk cars everywhere [TS]

01:05:11   because somebody notes it's it's not [TS]

01:05:12   it's not difficult to tear the stuff [TS]

01:05:15   apart [TS]

01:05:15   it's just that if you don't get it back [TS]

01:05:18   together then it's done right you have [TS]

01:05:21   like he has a very short amount of time [TS]

01:05:23   and we get this thing all apart and when [TS]

01:05:27   there was like the look of course the [TS]

01:05:29   last bolt he's wrenching on and he's [TS]

01:05:31   like oh my god I feel like there's [TS]

01:05:34   something wrong with this bolt feel like [TS]

01:05:36   i'm going to share the head off of this [TS]

01:05:38   bowl and I'm like from under the truck [TS]

01:05:42   and I'm like don't share the head off [TS]

01:05:43   the boat is like he's like he's like I [TS]

01:05:47   just don't like the feel of it and so we [TS]

01:05:50   we jiggle the part and we spray some [TS]

01:05:54   rust you know some like some lube in [TS]

01:05:58   there we juggle the parts of more we [TS]

01:06:00   spray some lube and then we wait and we [TS]

01:06:02   kind of pace around and then we go back [TS]

01:06:03   and do a little bit more and he's moving [TS]

01:06:05   the thing is like [TS]

01:06:07   I still just feel like i'm about to [TS]

01:06:08   share this off and if I share this bolt [TS]

01:06:10   off i do not have a bolt extractor now [TS]

01:06:14   we are really fucked because that's a [TS]

01:06:17   that's sort of a big job considering [TS]

01:06:20   where this bolt is and that will require [TS]

01:06:23   professional and when also he never [TS]

01:06:26   signed up for having that thing sit in [TS]

01:06:28   front of it I don't know he at that [TS]

01:06:29   point like that we're both pot committed [TS]

01:06:32   to this and we sit there for like 15 [TS]

01:06:35   minutes just fretting I'm writing I'm [TS]

01:06:37   like did we do the thing where we toured [TS]

01:06:39   the thing apart and then we share the [TS]

01:06:40   last bolt and then this just gets towed [TS]

01:06:44   to a junkyard and I get on a train em I [TS]

01:06:49   don't like that story I don't like that [TS]

01:06:50   ending but none of us did and it's you [TS]

01:06:52   know it's freezing now and it's the [TS]

01:06:53   middle of the night and he just says [TS]

01:06:56   okay you know where we've gone this far [TS]

01:07:00   I can't just leave it like this i'm just [TS]

01:07:04   gonna go for and he goes and he like [TS]

01:07:07   turns the bolt is like oh I just uh I [TS]

01:07:11   don't and then he's like wait a minute [TS]

01:07:13   and it and outcomes my god and we pull [TS]

01:07:19   the bolt out and we look at it and it's [TS]

01:07:21   not damaged it was just that it was [TS]

01:07:24   really hated it a forty-year-old bolt it [TS]

01:07:26   in there a long time and so then it was [TS]

01:07:30   just like we were so we were so [TS]

01:07:32   rejoicing about this bolt that then [TS]

01:07:34   putting it all back together seemed like [TS]

01:07:37   less of an onerous task because every [TS]

01:07:40   bolt we put back in was a bolt of [TS]

01:07:43   thankfulness it was just like Thank You [TS]

01:07:46   engine for receiving this bolt thank you [TS]

01:07:48   for receiving this bolt and the thing [TS]

01:07:51   just sort of you know went back together [TS]

01:07:53   really fast because we were freezing our [TS]

01:07:56   asses off and soaking wet with with [TS]

01:07:59   fluids got every reason to just give up [TS]

01:08:02   yeah right but also like here we go and [TS]

01:08:04   it was Calvin the entire time just like [TS]

01:08:06   he just never faltered he never you know [TS]

01:08:10   he never liked let doubt intrude and [TS]

01:08:15   then like 1030 and night [TS]

01:08:19   we shake hands he's like yeah you know [TS]

01:08:22   Black List pay it forward and forward I [TS]

01:08:26   was just like Thank You Calvin see you [TS]

01:08:28   buddy [TS]

01:08:28   he's like and he's the last thing he [TS]

01:08:29   said was I mean we're friends now [TS]

01:08:32   well I mean you just you just change [TS]

01:08:35   your water pump in my driveway like know [TS]

01:08:37   what her a we haven't we have a bond i [TS]

01:08:40   was like we fucking do it takes it takes [TS]

01:08:43   an RV in a list to make you really [TS]

01:08:45   appreciate something like that yeah [TS]

01:08:46   we're not all like that all the time [TS]

01:08:47   with each other [TS]

01:08:48   no no no that's the thing like there [TS]

01:08:51   were it was so easy for him to say yeah [TS]

01:08:54   I can give you the names of a couple of [TS]

01:08:57   people um you can't park it here though [TS]
