00:00:55   did you watch the young ones when you're [TS]

00:00:57   coming up i did have you heard the news [TS]

00:01:00   uh there's a there's there's young ones [TS]

00:01:02   news take it they break it [TS]

00:01:05   were you aware that there was a fifth [TS]

00:01:08   roommate uh it was yeah I was Sergei or [TS]

00:01:12   whatever [TS]

00:01:13   yeah let's say collection which they [TS]

00:01:15   sell its funny I was just saying to a [TS]

00:01:16   great interview with him know I kind of [TS]

00:01:19   spoil this for you blow your mind but it [TS]

00:01:21   wasn't the squirrel [TS]

00:01:22   oh and the explaining to me and smiling [TS]

00:01:24   talking tomatoes [TS]

00:01:25   huh no there's a fifth roommate in some [TS]

00:01:30   production stills or like promotional [TS]

00:01:31   shots you'll see the four guys and then [TS]

00:01:34   this one looks it looks kinda like [TS]

00:01:36   cousin it where it's obviously like a [TS]

00:01:38   woman with long hair with her hair [TS]

00:01:40   combed over her face she makes an [TS]

00:01:43   appearance in every episode of the first [TS]

00:01:46   season and I've seen those shows a lot [TS]

00:01:50   mark and I never saw her she's usually [TS]

00:01:52   in the background and once you see it [TS]

00:01:54   first of all it's incredibly wild that [TS]

00:01:56   you never notice that she's there but [TS]

00:01:58   she's also incredibly creepy because [TS]

00:02:01   she's just like sitting like crouched in [TS]

00:02:03   the background behind the couch with [TS]

00:02:04   hair interface and it's it's gonna blow [TS]

00:02:07   your mind when you see what [TS]

00:02:08   yes yes oh yeah like seen that I've seen [TS]

00:02:12   a whole bunch of time she just sitting [TS]

00:02:14   there in the shadows and it's she looks [TS]

00:02:16   like a Korean water ghost it's totally [TS]

00:02:17   freaky ok [TS]

00:02:20   yes that's something that Google am i [TS]

00:02:22   right all right i'll send you they'll [TS]

00:02:24   send me some some supporting footage [TS]

00:02:26   ok but I heard about it I was like oh is [TS]

00:02:28   this could be one of those things you [TS]

00:02:30   know those things on the internet but [TS]

00:02:33   yeah [TS]

00:02:33   can internet fingers are gonna be a real [TS]

00:02:35   thing I I got to be honest we got that [TS]

00:02:37   was gonna be an internet thing but she's [TS]

00:02:39   just she's just in the background [TS]

00:02:41   she's in like some party there's a party [TS]

00:02:43   scene where everybody's doing bong hits [TS]

00:02:44   and she's at the party but other than [TS]

00:02:46   that mostly I think she's intermittently [TS]

00:02:48   occasionally there after the first as a [TS]

00:02:51   series but the the first season [TS]

00:02:53   she's in at least once and sometimes [TS]

00:02:56   many times in every episode somewhere in [TS]

00:02:59   the background not participating in the [TS]

00:03:01   scene really maybe it's horrifying [TS]

00:03:04   uh ok it's nice to find those kinds of [TS]

00:03:08   things out yeah that's what they call an [TS]

00:03:10   easter egg am i right that's right you [TS]

00:03:11   got [TS]

00:03:12   well done was done easter egg donor for [TS]

00:03:15   change on tied with no I know a lot [TS]

00:03:19   about things from 4chan this is the [TS]

00:03:22   thing here's the thing about you a lot [TS]

00:03:25   of people don't know is that there's a [TS]

00:03:26   lot of people don't know about you and I [TS]

00:03:28   like that I like that you you are you [TS]

00:03:31   deploy personal information [TS]

00:03:34   tactically you don't need to let [TS]

00:03:37   everybody know you like no know a lot [TS]

00:03:38   about a thing guy like this little bit [TS]

00:03:40   TG dribble it dribbles John dribbles out [TS]

00:03:42   at his pleasure you gotta dribble what I [TS]

00:03:45   do feel [TS]

00:03:46   did you just hear a sound that sounded [TS]

00:03:48   like traffic noise in the nineteen [TS]

00:03:50   seventies movie i think that was met my [TS]

00:03:53   little cousin act like exhaling like oh [TS]

00:03:56   maybe maybe being actually sound like Oh [TS]

00:03:59   Jack it did for a brief second [TS]

00:04:01   do you remember in the nineteen [TS]

00:04:03   seventies where ya remember that traffic [TS]

00:04:06   sounded a lot louder who the seventies [TS]

00:04:09   yes it you only hear that volume of [TS]

00:04:12   traffic like you're in manhattan or in [TS]

00:04:15   some cases in my neighborhood if you [TS]

00:04:16   ever like call me when I walk down the [TS]

00:04:17   street it's it's the trains going by its [TS]

00:04:20   deafening but growing up in the suburbs [TS]

00:04:22   I always thought you're making this up [TS]

00:04:23   there's no way traffic is this loud [TS]

00:04:25   well a bit like so this is something [TS]

00:04:28   that you know that the millenniums might [TS]

00:04:30   not know and even even a Generation Xers [TS]

00:04:33   might not remember but there was a time [TS]

00:04:36   when there were no governor's on the [TS]

00:04:39   loudness of car horns [TS]

00:04:41   so all car horns that came out of you [TS]

00:04:44   know Detroit in the sixties and [TS]

00:04:47   seventies you hit your car horn it was [TS]

00:04:49   like a boat horn oh yeah I under an old [TS]

00:04:53   American an old American sedan like you [TS]

00:04:57   would get an F sharp from hell [TS]

00:04:58   like you really really heard it and matt [TS]

00:05:01   and so in the city's this was before [TS]

00:05:04   there were a lot of campaigns for [TS]

00:05:07   traffic politeness [TS]

00:05:08   yeah cars would pile up and they would [TS]

00:05:10   just be honking honking honking that's [TS]

00:05:13   the human condition right there isn't it [TS]

00:05:15   was a deafening noise or unhappy [TS]

00:05:18   there's nothing we can do about it so we [TS]

00:05:19   might as well be unpleasant man mark [TS]

00:05:22   lugar whatever and oh yeah and there are [TS]

00:05:28   still cars the window go sure after [TS]

00:05:30   jimmy carter and that's so later on it [TS]

00:05:34   was such a problem cities were so loud [TS]

00:05:36   that they actually passed ordinances and [TS]

00:05:38   and and then furthermore laws that [TS]

00:05:42   governed the the volume of a car horn so [TS]

00:05:46   that your car could only be a certain [TS]

00:05:48   number of Billy actually a minute you [TS]

00:05:50   tell me this is a thing [TS]

00:05:51   yeah they actually mommy stated the [TS]

00:05:54   volume of car horns because it because [TS]

00:05:59   noise pollution was such a problem the [TS]

00:06:00   whole concept of noise pollution and you [TS]

00:06:03   know and all the starters when people [TS]

00:06:05   first started talking about that let me [TS]

00:06:07   interrupt you but you know for a long [TS]

00:06:08   time you can understand air pollution [TS]

00:06:09   because it's hard to breathe [TS]

00:06:11   you understand water pollution because [TS]

00:06:12   we know we can drink the large breed [TS]

00:06:14   water you can understand you don't want [TS]

00:06:15   dioxin in the eggs like we understand [TS]

00:06:16   all that but when people first I think [TS]

00:06:18   it was the seventies equivalent of the [TS]

00:06:20   word microaggressions when people first [TS]

00:06:22   heard that they were like really now [TS]

00:06:23   noise pollution [TS]

00:06:25   yeah but it was it was so noticeable [TS]

00:06:27   when they governed the volume of car [TS]

00:06:32   horns like it made a tremendous impact [TS]

00:06:34   on quality of life in cities like right [TS]

00:06:39   away and [TS]

00:06:42   and then they took other steps to get to [TS]

00:06:48   mandate that your your city factory and [TS]

00:06:53   your city you know your enterprises have [TS]

00:06:56   also be conscious of the noise that they [TS]

00:06:58   were producing and I think you know car [TS]

00:07:00   mufflers were a lot louder than it it [TS]

00:07:04   was it was kind of considered an element [TS]

00:07:07   of of a cool car that it'd be really [TS]

00:07:10   loud just sitting there idling you could [TS]

00:07:12   buy cherry bombs you could buy thrush [TS]

00:07:13   that's right goodbye glasspack people [TS]

00:07:16   might vaguely remember seeing a woody [TS]

00:07:18   the woodpecker type character on the [TS]

00:07:20   back of a muscle car and thought what [TS]

00:07:21   was that [TS]

00:07:22   that means that's a person who pay to [TS]

00:07:24   have their cargo pom-pom rubber-like so [TS]

00:07:28   it was fucking loud you know in the city [TS]

00:07:31   and everyone will be watching like an [TS]

00:07:33   old nineteen seventies movie and then [TS]

00:07:36   we'll just be a traffic scene where [TS]

00:07:38   that's just sort of an interstitial [TS]

00:07:40   moment in the film but i'll have this [TS]

00:07:44   powerful recollection of like oh wow [TS]

00:07:46   that's right it used to sound like that [TS]

00:07:48   yep and now it does not sound like that [TS]

00:07:51   it sounds like this and it's a major [TS]

00:07:55   change like I had a type of have a sense [TS]

00:07:58   memory or you know like a soul memory [TS]

00:08:01   cloud town to town I get that I've had [TS]

00:08:05   the soul memories means what's your [TS]

00:08:07   biggest soul memory Merlin oh man i had [TS]

00:08:10   one the other day [TS]

00:08:11   oh I had one that came out of nowhere [TS]

00:08:13   iĆve spoken periodically about my [TS]

00:08:16   various best friends in life and from [TS]

00:08:19   different areas like for example a [TS]

00:08:20   couple years ago I reconnected with my [TS]

00:08:22   best friend from first grade on Twitter [TS]

00:08:25   whoa who as it turns out is the [TS]

00:08:27   executive producer of many television [TS]

00:08:29   shows now really I just known as the guy [TS]

00:08:31   he's the first that god bless you rob [TS]

00:08:33   hope you're out there [TS]

00:08:34   I'm not listening he's kinda busy you [TS]

00:08:36   know you can hit TV shows but he's the [TS]

00:08:38   first fella with which I competed to see [TS]

00:08:41   how far we could pee from the urinal [TS]

00:08:43   that's big [TS]

00:08:45   the first guy you ever do that with you [TS]

00:08:47   see what's not technically a sword fight [TS]

00:08:48   and get into that until until college [TS]

00:08:49   but but seeing how far you can step away [TS]

00:08:51   from the urinal heavy stream still go so [TS]

00:08:54   i connect with people sometimes [TS]

00:08:55   friends but I had a one of my dear old [TS]

00:08:58   friends was my friend John from MSA when [TS]

00:09:02   I was 17 when I was 11 or 12 like almost [TS]

00:09:04   every weekend we were at each others [TS]

00:09:06   house like sleeping over and he got me [TS]

00:09:08   into comics got he abused my first [TS]

00:09:10   person I knew who was really into lord [TS]

00:09:11   of the rings my uber nerd friend and at [TS]

00:09:14   one point he got 2 i'm going somewhere [TS]

00:09:17   with this at one point he got to move in [TS]

00:09:19   upstairs to your house and his he was [TS]

00:09:23   there for two seasons and their song [TS]

00:09:25   always had his hair over his face live [TS]

00:09:27   in the Attic by the way you by the way [TS]

00:09:29   check your messages that Justin photos [TS]

00:09:31   okay um so John got to move from his [TS]

00:09:35   room on the main floor to up into the [TS]

00:09:36   Attic which isn't you know fairly [TS]

00:09:38   finished attic it didn't have a bathroom [TS]

00:09:39   but it had too little of the big bedroom [TS]

00:09:42   and then a little bedroom also he he was [TS]

00:09:44   granted the right yeah he got a couple [TS]

00:09:46   nice accommodations i can tell you about [TS]

00:09:48   you you're not gonna believe what this [TS]

00:09:49   guy got but so that was awesome because [TS]

00:09:51   we got the only to do anything like bad [TS]

00:09:53   we were like the ultimate good kids we [TS]

00:09:54   SAT around and talked about the indie or [TS]

00:09:56   whatever but like but what I really [TS]

00:09:58   remember is that that's also where they [TS]

00:10:01   put the cat box and I don't know if you [TS]

00:10:04   remember cat boxes from the seventies [TS]

00:10:06   but a cat box from the seventies I can [TS]

00:10:09   just tell you that somebody who now has [TS]

00:10:10   a cat with two boxes there damn side [TS]

00:10:12   away from cat boxes today we were your [TS]

00:10:14   counters to cat boxes kind of standard [TS]

00:10:16   now yeah why is it standard is this some [TS]

00:10:20   kind of this is some kind of thing i'm [TS]

00:10:22   happy to circle back to it is a life [TS]

00:10:24   hack [TS]

00:10:24   it's kind of a life hack he has a cat [TS]

00:10:26   that's a cataract yet you couldn't [TS]

00:10:28   believe what happens in extra yeah look [TS]

00:10:30   at that park is one amazing trick cat [TS]

00:10:34   boxes could pollute 900 square feet of a [TS]

00:10:37   thousand square foot apartment [TS]

00:10:39   oh my goodness i don't know if it's what [TS]

00:10:41   the cats were eating or drinking I don't [TS]

00:10:43   know if they were remember their [TS]

00:10:44   metabolism i think john siracusa would [TS]

00:10:46   would call it adaptation or aurora blues [TS]

00:10:50   evolution I'd like the i think it is the [TS]

00:10:52   quality of litter i think it is the [TS]

00:10:54   notarizing litoris non scooping nine and [TS]

00:10:58   so like that the thing is I always did [TS]

00:11:01   was I was in and this gets the second [TS]

00:11:03   accommodation that John got later which [TS]

00:11:04   I'd love to tell you about but I was [TS]

00:11:05   sitting there just for some reason I [TS]

00:11:07   think about how cool it was I get the [TS]

00:11:08   John's house [TS]

00:11:09   I'm a bag we go upstairs we will go up [TS]

00:11:11   the steps and I just I suddenly got [TS]

00:11:13   smacked in the face with this was all [TS]

00:11:15   memory with this sense memory of that [TS]

00:11:18   cat box and it was nineteen [TS]

00:11:20   seventy-eight all over again I smelled [TS]

00:11:23   it I smelled the accurate ammonia can [TS]

00:11:26   smell so clearly it was its name printed [TS]

00:11:29   on it it's the canonical cat box in my [TS]

00:11:31   head is is john scott which was named [TS]

00:11:33   Blackie they had a cat named blocking a [TS]

00:11:35   dog Blackie ah understand the dog the [TS]

00:11:38   dog was scared the cat will chase the [TS]

00:11:40   dog was the doors course I'm not look [TS]

00:11:42   good because you're living in a sitcom [TS]

00:11:43   that done you know my dad's cat was [TS]

00:11:46   named puppy [TS]

00:11:46   oh yeah and then when puppy died young [TS]

00:11:50   mother cat named the puppy 20 see that's [TS]

00:11:54   a nice story about your dad so adorbs [TS]

00:11:57   did you look at the photos yeah uh-huh I [TS]

00:12:00   don't want to look at your going to [TS]

00:12:01   sleep now [TS]

00:12:01   I mean you don't sleep you're gonna [TS]

00:12:02   sleep twice on the one hand you're gonna [TS]

00:12:04   go holy shit i've watched that show you [TS]

00:12:06   see each of those shows at least once [TS]

00:12:08   oh yeah also that's weird but now look [TS]

00:12:10   at that photo doesn't that look like [TS]

00:12:11   something from like a japanese horror [TS]

00:12:12   film [TS]

00:12:13   well enough and the problem is when i [TS]

00:12:14   first saw it I was like I don't think I [TS]

00:12:18   had a soul memory but I did have some [TS]

00:12:21   sense of like oh I knew that but I can't [TS]

00:12:25   remember knowing it light like I don't I [TS]

00:12:29   i think i noticed that person before but [TS]

00:12:32   it would have been 1984 and I don't [TS]

00:12:35   remember why or what [TS]

00:12:37   because they never interact with her [TS]

00:12:39   you're probably you're probably I mean [TS]

00:12:40   our case it was usually eventually watch [TS]

00:12:42   them on video but they were I think they [TS]

00:12:44   want MTV they were all in the u.s. a few [TS]

00:12:47   years after they were in England and you [TS]

00:12:51   know we hopped up on mountain dew I [TS]

00:12:53   should do as you as you do you know you [TS]

00:12:57   do [TS]

00:12:57   wang right now we're Guy Fieri for young [TS]

00:13:02   once i have the other day on facebook [TS]

00:13:04   there's a there are a couple of [TS]

00:13:06   reporters let's call them reporters [TS]

00:13:08   votes for the stranger alternative [TS]

00:13:10   newspaper here in Seattle yeah who are a [TS]

00:13:13   just young enough that they still well [TS]

00:13:15   they're not young enough that they can [TS]

00:13:17   with any right maintain the incredibly [TS]

00:13:23   arrogant narrow-minded progressivism [TS]

00:13:27   that they do at the you know like it's a [TS]

00:13:29   they could if they were 20 you if you [TS]

00:13:31   might find it believable but they're [TS]

00:13:33   like 30 and writing the political [TS]

00:13:35   columns for a local alternative paper [TS]

00:13:37   and just like durable oh my god they're [TS]

00:13:39   so awful and one of their surroundings [TS]

00:13:42   so confident [TS]

00:13:43   yeah sure you look at them when you're [TS]

00:13:45   like I wish I was as confident about [TS]

00:13:47   anything as you are about whatever you [TS]

00:13:49   think this week [TS]

00:13:50   yeah and I mean and there they literally [TS]

00:13:52   like in the newspaper clench their fists [TS]

00:13:54   and stamp their feet and go man [TS]

00:13:58   and they're right you know there's some [TS]

00:14:00   article in the in the paper the other [TS]

00:14:01   day about how many homelessness is man [TS]

00:14:04   people are bad people that wear ties [TS]

00:14:06   irme and and Shawn Nelson posted on his [TS]

00:14:11   Facebook page and I know for a fact that [TS]

00:14:14   Sean this is a person as a co-worker of [TS]

00:14:17   Sean's sean is very gracious about [TS]

00:14:19   retuning things from his colleagues [TS]

00:14:21   that's right that's what he does in his [TS]

00:14:23   role as what is actual tip title there [TS]

00:14:25   was an editor of he's like this big shot [TS]

00:14:28   there is the life life editor you know [TS]

00:14:30   whatever the liberal arts editor [TS]

00:14:31   somebody posted this without comments [TS]

00:14:35   and i think or with with the with an [TS]

00:14:38   oblique comment such that ninety percent [TS]

00:14:41   of the people could read it and and he [TS]

00:14:43   would be doing that new yorker thing of [TS]

00:14:45   like retweeting his colleagues but a few [TS]

00:14:47   of us recognize that he was retweeting [TS]

00:14:49   it without comment because he despises [TS]

00:14:50   this person and a like personally [TS]

00:14:54   despise them and despises it and and [TS]

00:14:56   doesn't like working with him and all [TS]

00:14:58   these and I read the article and it was [TS]

00:15:00   just like me and so I remember road in [TS]

00:15:03   the comment you know reading this guy's [TS]

00:15:06   like reading Rick from the young ones [TS]

00:15:08   journal [TS]

00:15:10   haha fascist name and so the guy the [TS]

00:15:15   writer then comments after me because of [TS]

00:15:20   course right of course [TS]

00:15:21   sure what is linkedin the article he's [TS]

00:15:24   like I'm sorry I don't get that [TS]

00:15:26   reference [TS]

00:15:27   oh if only there was some way to find [TS]

00:15:28   out what that reference was I know and [TS]

00:15:30   so I so I think there are some places [TS]

00:15:32   you could go and say Rick from the young [TS]

00:15:34   ones in your mind out what that if only [TS]

00:15:36   if only he probably doesn't have an [TS]

00:15:40   Apple watch where you do that because an [TS]

00:15:43   Apple watch is part of the you know as [TS]

00:15:45   part of colonialism but in any case MIT [TS]

00:15:48   so i replied oh don't worry about it [TS]

00:15:52   it's a reference from the sixties and [TS]

00:15:55   yeah I felt like that was that was [TS]

00:15:57   exactly how many laughs that was worth [TS]

00:15:59   like to has but it was at least I felt [TS]

00:16:01   good about it its reference from the [TS]

00:16:03   sixties go fuck yourself a break from [TS]

00:16:04   the young ones I yes you were talking [TS]

00:16:07   about finding your first grade friend [TS]

00:16:09   who you tried to pee [TS]

00:16:12   as far as you could it was a very gentle [TS]

00:16:15   kind of competition it was almost a [TS]

00:16:17   journey of self-discovery when men see [TS]

00:16:19   how far from the urinal they can get [TS]

00:16:21   it's not really a pissing contest is the [TS]

00:16:23   ironic part it's more it's a form of [TS]

00:16:24   bonding really it's not it's funny that [TS]

00:16:26   it got that term pissing contest but it [TS]

00:16:28   is really more way of saying let's see [TS]

00:16:30   what we can do with this business when [TS]

00:16:31   they're there [TS]

00:16:32   I've been in there two different kinds [TS]

00:16:33   of pissing contest i was in there one [TS]

00:16:35   was with the Catholic priest on the [TS]

00:16:37   outside wall of the fish bar in in [TS]

00:16:40   Ketchum Idaho which it with David well [TS]

00:16:47   regular listeners to show will recognize [TS]

00:16:49   this as coming from the episode members [TS]

00:16:52   of a lot of six but and then there was [TS]

00:16:56   Peter no sec who was able who was taught [TS]

00:17:00   by his father to be able to pee over his [TS]

00:17:03   own shoulder that's tremendous which we [TS]

00:17:06   made how many times you got that wrong [TS]

00:17:08   he stuck with it [TS]

00:17:09   yeah right and and Peter and his father [TS]

00:17:11   I mean neither one of them were [TS]

00:17:12   especially tall and I think that's an [TS]

00:17:15   advantage when you're trying to be over [TS]

00:17:16   your own shoulder but also a lot of [TS]

00:17:19   stream control and we'd be out somewhere [TS]

00:17:22   you know drinking [TS]

00:17:23   beer and shooting guns and we have to go [TS]

00:17:26   pee and we go over start peeing in the [TS]

00:17:28   ditch or whatever and then Peter would [TS]

00:17:30   he do this like pretty cool contortion [TS]

00:17:35   you drop a shoulder lean back a little [TS]

00:17:36   bit you know like penis in hand and then [TS]

00:17:42   just the P would he would just start [TS]

00:17:45   just directing it over his shoulder and [TS]

00:17:47   could just [TS]

00:17:48   oh my god it was a for an [TS]

00:17:50   eighteen-year-old truly uncomfortable [TS]

00:17:53   talent I would never have tried it you [TS]

00:17:56   know there's no way i would would would [TS]

00:17:58   be able to get away with this sunday [TS]

00:17:59   night everything that's the kind of [TS]

00:18:01   thing that if memory serves that's kind [TS]

00:18:03   of thing that makes you what I will call [TS]

00:18:05   a local legend [TS]

00:18:06   yeah like you're not going to appear in [TS]

00:18:08   journals probably you're not gonna be [TS]

00:18:09   featured in national magazine but you're [TS]

00:18:12   going to become that one guy that can do [TS]

00:18:13   that thing we got to compete over [TS]

00:18:14   shoulder and Peter had many many of [TS]

00:18:16   these talents [TS]

00:18:17   oh god bless him he was a he was a he [TS]

00:18:19   certainly is remains a legend to me but [TS]

00:18:24   I would you as you said that I realized [TS]

00:18:26   that my childhood best friend was a kid [TS]

00:18:33   named aaron kinnaman and over the years [TS]

00:18:37   over the last 20 years I have searched [TS]

00:18:40   for Aaron kinnaman innumerable times [TS]

00:18:42   trying to have the same experience that [TS]

00:18:45   you're having of like my first-grade [TS]

00:18:47   friend that blah blah but I had a lot of [TS]

00:18:51   experiences with aaron kinnaman who he's [TS]

00:18:54   got the out there gotta be leaving a [TS]

00:18:55   trail but he's not [TS]

00:18:57   and the problem is I don't know how to [TS]

00:18:59   spell kinnaman oh yeah like they're 14 [TS]

00:19:03   different possible spellings of cinnamon [TS]

00:19:05   and I've tried them all and there's just [TS]

00:19:08   nothing and it astonishes me to be in it [TS]

00:19:15   in our contemporary life and have an [TS]

00:19:18   errand kidman is not the only one there [TS]

00:19:20   is not the only person from my past that [TS]

00:19:22   I have tried to find on the internet [TS]

00:19:23   that there's just nothing there's just [TS]

00:19:26   not a single trace not even those those [TS]

00:19:29   terrible like white pages that way we [TS]

00:19:31   can find this person [TS]

00:19:33   in in you know in this lesson such city [TS]

00:19:37   yeah so how do you how do you live in [TS]

00:19:39   the modern world and be completely [TS]

00:19:41   invisible on the internet i know there [TS]

00:19:44   are millions and millions billions let's [TS]

00:19:47   say of people to pull it off but uh but [TS]

00:19:51   it's still like as somebody who spent a [TS]

00:19:54   lot of time on 1400 it's hard for me to [TS]

00:19:56   imagine that even if I wanted to docs [TS]

00:19:59   Aaron kinnaman I could [TS]

00:20:01   oh that's frustrating it's very [TS]

00:20:03   frustrating it's weird because everybody [TS]

00:20:05   leaves a trail you know that's what when [TS]

00:20:07   you see this is all like a little bit [TS]

00:20:08   inside baseball here when somebody shows [TS]

00:20:10   up on the scene and is being very [TS]

00:20:12   provocative especially through the shape [TS]

00:20:14   of being somebody in their twenties one [TS]

00:20:18   thing you can do in this is not anything [TS]

00:20:20   your dachshund but it's more like okay [TS]

00:20:22   so this person purports to be somebody [TS]

00:20:23   who's in the internet sphere and it's [TS]

00:20:26   definitely not a stock pot but like you [TS]

00:20:28   can go out you should be able to find [TS]

00:20:30   something about them not something just [TS]

00:20:32   embarrassing but everybody leaves a [TS]

00:20:35   trail these days of just like some dumb [TS]

00:20:37   thing you forgot about like you in a [TS]

00:20:39   talent show you know there's something [TS]

00:20:41   somewhere in when none of that stuff [TS]

00:20:43   appears at all it feels weird feels [TS]

00:20:45   weird and I'm not trying to be creepy [TS]

00:20:47   but I'm just trying to say like this is [TS]

00:20:48   just a fact of life that if you're [TS]

00:20:49   somebody these days you know that's [TS]

00:20:51   that's something that's a thing but it [TS]

00:20:53   is strange somebody who's in their [TS]

00:20:54   forties you can't find anything about [TS]

00:20:56   them [TS]

00:20:57   Yeah Yeah right like a like well I'm [TS]

00:21:02   trying to I'm trying to think of i mean [TS]

00:21:03   ok he doesn't have a linkedin profile he [TS]

00:21:06   was smart [TS]

00:21:07   yeah he doesn't have a facebook but like [TS]

00:21:10   his kids never tagged him in anything [TS]

00:21:14   yes those kids don't have a I mean it's [TS]

00:21:17   just it's very frustrating me because [TS]

00:21:19   there are a few people from my past that [TS]

00:21:21   I would like to get in contact with and [TS]

00:21:24   compare that to all the people i am in [TS]

00:21:26   contact with from my past that I would [TS]

00:21:28   rather not be in contact with it's just [TS]

00:21:31   it's very frustrating [TS]

00:21:32   uh-huh there's an idea to grow in [TS]

00:21:35   college named latonia wheeler you should [TS]

00:21:38   be able to find latonia wheeler you [TS]

00:21:39   should be able to be care and somebody [TS]

00:21:41   will now John I don't think so my [TS]

00:21:44   challenge you in [TS]

00:21:46   boy please don't challenge ok don't know [TS]

00:21:48   no stop you were you I could hear you [TS]

00:21:51   internet all sharpening your pencils are [TS]

00:21:54   getting getting your yellow legal pads [TS]

00:21:57   out stop get off your virtual pad stop [TS]

00:22:00   it go back into in animating gifts [TS]

00:22:02   John's a grandmother was married to a [TS]

00:22:08   guy for a long time and he passed away [TS]

00:22:09   and they decided that John's grandmother [TS]

00:22:12   with a call when they called money she [TS]

00:22:13   was awesome naughty was going to move in [TS]

00:22:15   with them so John's dad who is a handy [TS]

00:22:17   guy and was like a woodworker and a [TS]

00:22:20   Michigan accent I'm sorry the machinist [TS]

00:22:21   who worked at one of the great machining [TS]

00:22:22   plants in Cincinnati all the great [TS]

00:22:24   machine plants all the great machine [TS]

00:22:26   play Cincinnati actually since the [TS]

00:22:27   cincinnati milacron like they made the [TS]

00:22:29   tools that they made the precision tools [TS]

00:22:31   that made the precision tools and since [TS]

00:22:33   any of the tools that made the pursuits [TS]

00:22:36   of the workshop in it [TS]

00:22:37   unfortunately that is really went away [TS]

00:22:39   quite a while ago by all the tools the [TS]

00:22:42   tools that you did know you need to make [TS]

00:22:45   all the tools you never knew you needed [TS]

00:22:48   oh it's in Cincinnati well it's a daddy [TS]

00:22:53   making all the two easy text I got kind [TS]

00:22:57   of time making tools and unpacking lots [TS]

00:23:01   of tools making lots of to do be do be [TS]

00:23:04   do that show makes no fucking sense [TS]

00:23:07   without the original music oh my god [TS]

00:23:09   it's so insane doing right but this is [TS]

00:23:12   last train coming by the Doobie Brothers [TS]

00:23:14   and it's like really good oh yeah the [TS]

00:23:20   dx7 with some synthetic food want want [TS]

00:23:24   want so John's dad is quick set himself [TS]

00:23:28   to the task of going through their [TS]

00:23:29   unfinished basement and making an [TS]

00:23:32   apartment for her how great is this [TS]

00:23:33   unfinished basement is an incredible [TS]

00:23:35   album 2 3 4 and so John John's dad made [TS]

00:23:40   her a beautiful apartment with like a [TS]

00:23:43   full bath [TS]

00:23:45   you know with the shower gels for he put [TS]

00:23:48   in like I don't have the false floor [TS]

00:23:50   oh you sent to get high like like German [TS]

00:23:52   bearer bonds [TS]

00:23:53   no not like a Al Capone false floor was [TS]

00:23:55   not like a concrete floor is carpeted [TS]

00:23:56   and whatnot OIC ok you had a big nap too [TS]

00:23:59   I mean this is you know this is the [TS]

00:24:00   seventies sure was napping so anyway [TS]

00:24:02   long story short the made this and she [TS]

00:24:04   lived there for a long time and she [TS]

00:24:05   helped with the kids and she was awesome [TS]

00:24:07   and then you know I'm Kenley enough she [TS]

00:24:09   got married to another guy at our church [TS]

00:24:10   i can just use sixties she was probably [TS]

00:24:13   48 years old that's what's so [TS]

00:24:15   frustrating [TS]

00:24:16   she's already a great grandmother was a [TS]

00:24:18   grandma 51 years only dipped his camels [TS]

00:24:22   and makers mark uh and so then when she [TS]

00:24:26   moved out with Jim Beall dr. Beale then [TS]

00:24:30   John graduated from getting to be in the [TS]

00:24:33   place upstairs to getting the entire [TS]

00:24:36   finished basement she had his own [TS]

00:24:39   apartment inside the house when he was [TS]

00:24:41   11 so when he was eleven past this is [TS]

00:24:44   this is this is when we were pals I went [TS]

00:24:46   through John having the original room [TS]

00:24:47   into John having the upstairs room into [TS]

00:24:50   John graduating down into the room and a [TS]

00:24:52   ping-pong table be all down there and it [TS]

00:24:55   was against had his own little house and [TS]

00:24:57   start inside of the house it was [TS]

00:24:59   astonishing [TS]

00:25:00   the thing was we were good kids we were [TS]

00:25:02   good Christian kids like what we what [TS]

00:25:04   was like the worst thing we did was [TS]

00:25:07   watching other people do fireworks one [TS]

00:25:11   of the kids was really injured a betty [TS]

00:25:13   was burned he had to wear thing on his [TS]

00:25:15   neck [TS]

00:25:16   I this happened to command an apartment [TS]

00:25:18   in about your own apartment isn't that [TS]

00:25:20   kind of what this is john hodgman stream [TS]

00:25:22   right well John Hodgman actually had [TS]

00:25:23   like a whole half of the house that this [TS]

00:25:25   but I actually had the same experience [TS]

00:25:28   like my when my mom moved into her new [TS]

00:25:30   house when I was in ninth grade right [TS]

00:25:34   before ninth grade [TS]

00:25:35   this was the period when she decided [TS]

00:25:38   that I was so incorrigible that the way [TS]

00:25:39   she was going to punish me was by making [TS]

00:25:41   me go live with my father who and so she [TS]

00:25:43   moved into the new house and there was a [TS]

00:25:45   bedroom in there that was that should [TS]

00:25:46   have been my bedroom but she turned it [TS]

00:25:48   into like the fern room for the sewing [TS]

00:25:51   room or something and she was like your [TS]

00:25:53   gift wrapping your gift wrapping give [TS]

00:25:55   the gift wrapping and that's exactly [TS]

00:25:58   what it was right just like a bunch of [TS]

00:26:00   someone with a giant fuck you to [TS]

00:26:01   somebody in your family to have a room [TS]

00:26:03   for wrapping presents [TS]

00:26:05   it's a bedroom in the house and my mom [TS]

00:26:06   basically climbed into it and said this [TS]

00:26:08   is my dog crate [TS]

00:26:10   actually just populated it with all a [TS]

00:26:13   bunch of moms shit just to say like even [TS]

00:26:16   if you do move in here and put posters [TS]

00:26:18   of Porsches on the wall it's never gonna [TS]

00:26:20   feel like yours because the first thing [TS]

00:26:22   that was in here was a sewing machine [TS]

00:26:24   and so I went to live with my dad you [TS]

00:26:28   know I've told this story [TS]

00:26:29   yeah but uh but then i moved into that [TS]

00:26:33   room and then over the course of time [TS]

00:26:35   like it was just clear that it was that [TS]

00:26:37   wasn't i needed to be somewhat more [TS]

00:26:40   sequestered and we had a large basement [TS]

00:26:43   in this house footprint of an entire [TS]

00:26:45   floor that was that was a sunken bayer I [TS]

00:26:52   mean three of the four walls were just [TS]

00:26:54   were just windowless walls and then the [TS]

00:26:57   back wall was all windows and and a [TS]

00:27:01   sliding glass door except it was [TS]

00:27:02   underneath a covered porch that was on [TS]

00:27:05   the second floor [TS]

00:27:06   so basically this entire basement never [TS]

00:27:08   saw the Sun there was daylight coming in [TS]

00:27:12   from one wall but it was Alaska so in [TS]

00:27:16   the wintertime that daylight amounted to [TS]

00:27:18   nothing basically you know the sun came [TS]

00:27:21   up at ten and went down at two so there [TS]

00:27:23   was no it was dark and then in the style [TS]

00:27:26   of the seven slate sixties early [TS]

00:27:29   seventies when they built this place [TS]

00:27:30   their decision on how to how to hack it [TS]

00:27:36   out that basement was they panel the [TS]

00:27:38   walls in unfinished rough sawn wood like [TS]

00:27:43   a barn so the walls were barnwood which [TS]

00:27:49   is as as you know is very reflective and [TS]

00:27:52   really light and cheery know that was [TS]

00:27:55   sarcasm [TS]

00:27:56   it's not yeah and and then they built [TS]

00:27:59   this year like it's like you're living [TS]

00:28:00   in something that was meant to contain [TS]

00:28:02   other number [TS]

00:28:03   yeah right or meant to contain livestock [TS]

00:28:06   of the end the kind of livestock that is [TS]

00:28:08   invaluable and then the lighting they up [TS]

00:28:14   along the walls they built this they [TS]

00:28:15   built these sort of like how would you [TS]

00:28:20   describe them [TS]

00:28:22   they were cantilever little not little [TS]

00:28:27   enormous light fixtures with that sort [TS]

00:28:31   of bumpy plastic sheeting inside you [TS]

00:28:34   know the sort of bumpy translucent [TS]

00:28:36   sheets of a bumpy plastic I think I know [TS]

00:28:40   yeah and then each light fixture had [TS]

00:28:43   four light bulbs in it and there were [TS]

00:28:46   ten of these light fixtures throughout [TS]

00:28:49   the basement so 40 lightbulbs going to [TS]

00:28:56   illuminate this basement and the boxes [TS]

00:28:58   were also built out of barnwood the [TS]

00:29:01   light boxes were built at a barn wood [TS]

00:29:02   with this bumpy translucent plastic such [TS]

00:29:05   that 40 lightbulbs going at once could [TS]

00:29:08   not like produce almost no light it [TS]

00:29:11   still felt like you were here in this [TS]

00:29:13   sounds like a John McCain jail like you [TS]

00:29:16   know you were in Batman's layer [TS]

00:29:18   yeah if a Batman Slayer was made up of [TS]

00:29:20   it was a barn if Batman's cables a barn [TS]

00:29:23   something hard place to be cheerful it [TS]

00:29:25   was pretty do me but it was built in [TS]

00:29:30   this in the early settler late sixties [TS]

00:29:32   let's say as a party space so there was [TS]

00:29:34   a bar with like orange it was like an [TS]

00:29:38   orange bar with the sink in a [TS]

00:29:40   refrigerator and a and shelves for [TS]

00:29:43   glasses and & boos and then around the [TS]

00:29:47   back there was a sauna and up like a [TS]

00:29:52   tanning bed in the olds in the old style [TS]

00:29:55   which is a piece of foam on a on a bench [TS]

00:30:00   also orange and then two light bulbs of [TS]

00:30:05   this business pitiless sunlamps yeah [TS]

00:30:08   tanning bulbs not that mana tanning bed [TS]

00:30:11   with those neon bulbs but like like yeah [TS]

00:30:14   red hot red Sun bulbs [TS]

00:30:18   what were they called and what you're [TS]

00:30:19   talking about your tanning lamps getting [TS]

00:30:21   like you would get these things and they [TS]

00:30:23   were getting credibly hot and they I [TS]

00:30:26   mean I don't know much about the effects [TS]

00:30:29   of light spectra on our cells and stuff [TS]

00:30:32   but they're pretty cancer e yeah they [TS]

00:30:34   produce [TS]

00:30:35   ultraviolet light of you get burned real [TS]

00:30:37   fast on those things one way or another [TS]

00:30:39   and so there was a sauna and these UV [TS]

00:30:43   bulbs and what it sounds like somebody's [TS]

00:30:48   little uh suburban torture dungeon [TS]

00:30:50   sounds well and to make it to you know [TS]

00:30:53   took to finish out the other meetups [TS]

00:30:56   hanging from the signal to finish out [TS]

00:30:58   the decoration yeah there was a giant a [TS]

00:31:01   doll sheep head out here hanging on the [TS]

00:31:04   wall above the television so there was [TS]

00:31:07   this like there's this and it was a big [TS]

00:31:10   sheep that had been killed by my mom's [TS]

00:31:13   boyfriend who's his that was his little [TS]

00:31:15   bit of addition to the to the decor [TS]

00:31:18   that's what he does which is just to [TS]

00:31:20   keep huh [TS]

00:31:21   so when you were down when you were down [TS]

00:31:22   in the basement with all 40 lights [TS]

00:31:24   burning reduce producing the [TS]

00:31:27   illumination of like mm dusk dusk in a [TS]

00:31:34   storm just get a sandstorm you would [TS]

00:31:38   look up and this like dead sheep would [TS]

00:31:40   be eyeballing you and no matter where [TS]

00:31:43   you were in the room the sheep was [TS]

00:31:44   looking at you and at a certain point my [TS]

00:31:48   mom was like why don't you just live in [TS]

00:31:49   the basement and so that they put a bed [TS]

00:31:54   down there [TS]

00:31:55   thankfully sort of close to the windows [TS]

00:31:57   so that the so I had a sense of light [TS]

00:32:00   but that was fine with me like I was a [TS]

00:32:03   cave dweller anyway and i had my own I [TS]

00:32:06   never used the sauna [TS]

00:32:07   no one did it just became a place just [TS]

00:32:09   to put the christmas wrapping and I [TS]

00:32:12   never used the tanning bed and I never [TS]

00:32:17   used the bar for anything but I had this [TS]

00:32:20   enormous space that was mine that I [TS]

00:32:22   could you know I could shoot bows and [TS]

00:32:24   arrows down there it was really educate [TS]

00:32:27   their knives you absolutely could throw [TS]

00:32:29   anything like more anything I had a [TS]

00:32:31   12-foot long bullwhip and I would sit [TS]

00:32:34   down there and practice with until I [TS]

00:32:35   until I hurt myself very badly and then [TS]

00:32:38   I would hang it in the closet again and [TS]

00:32:39   say just stop playing the bull weapon [TS]

00:32:42   please leave it every time you do it you [TS]

00:32:44   have a really good time for five minutes [TS]

00:32:46   and then you laugh [TS]

00:32:47   surrender yourself you're so close to [TS]

00:32:48   needing an eyepatch you do not know how [TS]

00:32:50   to use this thing stop playing with it [TS]

00:32:53   and then I would you know I'd see it [TS]

00:32:55   again I'd be like move this time I'm [TS]

00:32:56   gonna get it this time gonna be like [TS]

00:32:58   done time it's exactly would be able to [TS]

00:33:01   take a gun out of somebody's hand with [TS]

00:33:03   and they don't come back in and strikes [TS]

00:33:05   out now [TS]

00:33:06   Wow but it was a it was a good and a [TS]

00:33:12   really good time down there we had [TS]

00:33:13   that's where we put our IBM pc with 64k [TS]

00:33:16   sweet a lot of K there's a lot of K i [TS]

00:33:21   had had you know that's where I would go [TS]

00:33:23   make out with my first girlfriend but [TS]

00:33:25   you know I also was I wasn't the type of [TS]

00:33:27   like nerdy good kid that would watch [TS]

00:33:30   other people do fireworks but I wasn't [TS]

00:33:32   down I wasn't having orgies down there [TS]

00:33:34   anything now my mom one time was [TS]

00:33:38   wondering why the humidifier didn't work [TS]

00:33:40   anymore and she opened up the top of the [TS]

00:33:42   dehumidifier and that didn't work [TS]

00:33:44   because soup [TS]

00:33:45   it was full of bottles of booze see she [TS]

00:33:48   was like this was a good hiding place [TS]

00:33:51   who you should have just done it just a [TS]

00:33:53   little bit better so that didn't a for [TS]

00:33:55   effort John did Miley got an a I didn't [TS]

00:33:57   affect the operation of the machine was [TS]

00:34:00   a great idea was the old-fashioned kind [TS]

00:34:01   of a humidifier that actually LOL oh and [TS]

00:34:04   up like a puddle of water in the bottom [TS]

00:34:06   yeah you could sit your liquor bottles [TS]

00:34:09   in there and keeping cool [TS]

00:34:10   ah disco wow nice super disco how geez i [TS]

00:34:15   was very into throwing sharp things i [TS]

00:34:17   like darts I liked knives sometimes [TS]

00:34:20   kitchen knives i would take all the [TS]

00:34:22   kitchen knives and I would see I would [TS]

00:34:23   try to get the right distance from the [TS]

00:34:24   wall where we get like you know a couple [TS]

00:34:26   of turns [TS]

00:34:27   yeah that was a good feeling and [TS]

00:34:29   eventually I got into you know throwing [TS]

00:34:31   star sure construct sure you pick this [TS]

00:34:33   up at the flea market on sharpen your [TS]

00:34:34   sharpening yourself and now you could [TS]

00:34:37   death or sure cans chicken chicken sir [TS]

00:34:39   did you ever carry shuriken school only [TS]

00:34:42   my wallet yeah you have loans of me [TS]

00:34:46   throwing star that you carried in your [TS]

00:34:47   wallet ya ya later I had a condom i [TS]

00:34:50   never used but for a time I had the [TS]

00:34:52   Asher can shape in my wallet and did you [TS]

00:34:54   to deploy it to the point that no now [TS]

00:34:58   the better ninjas do not keep their [TS]

00:35:01   weapons inside of a pouch in their back [TS]

00:35:03   pocket at least not the primary weapon [TS]

00:35:05   that might be that might be the one for [TS]

00:35:06   a few been searched you hope you still [TS]

00:35:07   have that one like in your sock em but [TS]

00:35:10   no no no I'm not sure who that was for [TS]

00:35:13   did you do things like that was clearly [TS]

00:35:17   for a girl [TS]

00:35:18   yeah when you pulled your wallet out [TS]

00:35:20   this is what I pulled out my adam and [TS]

00:35:22   the ants velcro wall and Asher candidate [TS]

00:35:24   know this all this here let me let me [TS]

00:35:26   buy your snow cones through the air bog [TS]

00:35:30   falls on the graft dog O'Hara yeah you [TS]

00:35:33   know tell the Chinese character on it [TS]

00:35:35   so did you think as you're walking [TS]

00:35:39   around did you pretend as though you [TS]

00:35:44   were a ninja that was not I was what i [TS]

00:35:48   would later on get into functional ninja [TS]

00:35:50   things like mostly running around in [TS]

00:35:51   people's backyards with a sweatshirt [TS]

00:35:52   over my head but functional ninja did [TS]

00:35:54   you ever have the toe shoes [TS]

00:35:55   no no I didn't go that far we had [TS]

00:35:57   sweatshirts we had a rubber tracks and [TS]

00:35:59   later actual nunchucks [TS]

00:36:01   yeah and we would carry things that we [TS]

00:36:03   imagined a suburban ninja would need one [TS]

00:36:06   of the things that defines ninja ms [TS]

00:36:08   sweatshirts ops you look you look at any [TS]

00:36:11   yes any of the original literature most [TS]

00:36:14   ninjas wear sweatshirts so we had that [TS]

00:36:16   and mainly was just about sneaking [TS]

00:36:18   around at that point yes I can't imagine [TS]

00:36:19   how many retirees we scared by like [TS]

00:36:22   running past the air conditioner at nine [TS]

00:36:23   o'clock [TS]

00:36:23   oh they probably weren't thinking ninjas [TS]

00:39:09   no no I i know huh honey did you see [TS]

00:39:13   that it's Roger it's just those ninjas [TS]

00:39:15   again it's the ninjas we have nothing to [TS]

00:39:17   fear no but see this is again this is a [TS]

00:39:19   thing I add [TS]

00:39:20   this has come up in some form or fashion [TS]

00:39:21   before but you know it's a classic [TS]

00:39:23   American male thing of like for example [TS]

00:39:24   I never driven a car but i have seen [TS]

00:39:27   lots of car driving I've seen fast car [TS]

00:39:29   driving i'm pretty sure I'd be a good [TS]

00:39:31   fast car driver I've seen so many fight [TS]

00:39:33   scenes i bet i'd be pretty great fight [TS]

00:39:35   sure and in this case like I've seen [TS]

00:39:37   stealthy my ninjas [TS]

00:39:38   I certainly if there's anything in my [TS]

00:39:41   grasp I could be a stealthy ninja i to [TS]

00:39:43   myself stealthy ninja [TS]

00:39:44   yes yes I spent a lot of time there were [TS]

00:39:48   things that Sidewalk home from school [TS]

00:39:50   and I spent a lot of time fantasizing [TS]

00:39:52   during the walk home you had your key on [TS]

00:39:54   a red string happy on red string walking [TS]

00:39:57   home from school and part of the reason [TS]

00:39:58   I walked home from school I mean there [TS]

00:39:59   was a bus but you take the bus and then [TS]

00:40:02   what would you do you just be home and I [TS]

00:40:05   wasn't somebody that went home and read [TS]

00:40:07   comic books or play video games yet get [TS]

00:40:09   a special projects [TS]

00:40:10   yeah I would sit at home and just I [TS]

00:40:12   would stare at the wall if I was at home [TS]

00:40:13   so why not walk home [TS]

00:40:15   it would take me an hour or so to walk [TS]

00:40:16   and I would fantasize the entire way [TS]

00:40:19   home just just in a state of total dream [TS]

00:40:22   place right where the the actual like I [TS]

00:40:26   was perceiving the world outside i was [TS]

00:40:28   looking at things also but in my mind it [TS]

00:40:31   was I was far far away and early on one [TS]

00:40:35   of the things I one of my fantasies was [TS]

00:40:41   that i lived in a Richie Rich world how [TS]

00:40:46   I've had that fantasy where I was a very [TS]

00:40:49   wealthy boy and and I had a bunch of [TS]

00:40:52   adult things that were scaled-down Allah [TS]

00:40:55   Bugsy Malone [TS]

00:40:58   alright so i had a rolls-royce but it [TS]

00:41:03   was a half-scale rolls-royce silver [TS]

00:41:05   shadow but it was a half-scale [TS]

00:41:07   rolls-royce silver shadow so rather than [TS]

00:41:09   having to walk home I would drive myself [TS]

00:41:12   home in my imaginarium in my half-size [TS]

00:41:16   rolls-royce silver shadow now it i would [TS]

00:41:20   I i'm picturing myself driving this [TS]

00:41:22   rolls-royce silver shadow on the bike [TS]

00:41:24   paths of anchorage alaska right out the [TS]

00:41:26   fantasy doesn't extend to that I'm [TS]

00:41:28   living in Monaco that's not possible [TS]

00:41:31   it's not plausible but it's been hearing [TS]

00:41:33   that [TS]

00:41:33   scenario you can very easily place that [TS]

00:41:35   there's all kinds of ways for young [TS]

00:41:37   person to feel fancy in their head [TS]

00:41:39   that's right that seems weirdly possible [TS]

00:41:41   when I see a rolls-royce silver shadow [TS]

00:41:43   on the road now and most of them only [TS]

00:41:45   exist as wedding cars anymore but I [TS]

00:41:49   still picture myself in it and picture [TS]

00:41:51   both me and the car is being about like [TS]

00:41:55   three quarter scale i'd love to see that [TS]

00:41:56   but then I got introduced to lord of the [TS]

00:42:00   rings as we all do about you know I [TS]

00:42:03   think even now if you get introduced to [TS]

00:42:05   lord rings for the first time it [TS]

00:42:07   immediately transported in 1980 least [TS]

00:42:10   that's how intelligent like I mean in [TS]

00:42:13   John's case and you know I i we talking [TS]

00:42:15   about here we talked about talked about [TS]

00:42:16   for siracusa it sounds like it's [TS]

00:42:18   something that somehow most guys who [TS]

00:42:22   didn't even self identifies a geek or [TS]

00:42:23   whatever but you discover usually around [TS]

00:42:25   middle school junior high like late late [TS]

00:42:27   elementary school middle school junior I [TS]

00:42:29   that right I'm seventh grade for me and [TS]

00:42:32   then I was then the concept of all of [TS]

00:42:37   that and and and lower the Rings and D&D [TS]

00:42:40   came together for me as as they should [TS]

00:42:43   as a package deal and then I spent the [TS]

00:42:45   entire time walking home from school [TS]

00:42:46   contouring spells [TS]

00:42:48   oh this is the conjuring era was [TS]

00:42:51   conjuring spills who misses this is this [TS]

00:42:53   along that is I'm sorry to interrupt but [TS]

00:42:55   was later on you and attempt to actually [TS]

00:42:57   contour that's a little later right [TS]

00:42:59   little later yeah this was just the [TS]

00:43:00   beginning of like oh and also also like [TS]

00:43:04   when I was little kid and people in [TS]

00:43:07   seattle talked about underground Seattle [TS]

00:43:09   which is a neighborhood in the on the [TS]

00:43:11   first avenue that they raised the level [TS]

00:43:15   of the streets at one point during one [TS]

00:43:17   of their many redevelopment of downtown [TS]

00:43:20   and in raising the level of the streets [TS]

00:43:22   they just they just covered over the [TS]

00:43:24   first floor of shops and stuff downtown [TS]

00:43:28   and just decided that now the second [TS]

00:43:31   floor of buildings were going to be the [TS]

00:43:32   first floor they get that in Chicago [TS]

00:43:34   know when they when they wanted to what [TS]

00:43:36   they had like plumbing or they added [TS]

00:43:38   like a whole like septic or sewer system [TS]

00:43:41   and they raised Chicago like a story [TS]

00:43:42   they raise it up residence in Anchorage [TS]

00:43:45   during the 64 earthquake and other [TS]

00:43:46   he's actually fell a story so that they [TS]

00:43:49   had to authenticate you know they call [TS]

00:43:52   pancaking here yeah that's not good [TS]

00:43:53   pancakes bad but the buildings were [TS]

00:43:55   destroyed they just dropped one story [TS]

00:43:57   that so the front door of the building [TS]

00:43:59   alex mica yeah yeah long and they just [TS]

00:44:02   cut new doors like pretty crazy but [TS]

00:44:06   people in seattle talk about underground [TS]

00:44:08   seattle when I was six or seven years [TS]

00:44:09   old I imagine that that meant that any [TS]

00:44:11   time you dug in the ground anywhere in [TS]

00:44:14   Seattle there was a city under there was [TS]

00:44:16   like a second Seattle underneath where [TS]

00:44:18   you are you just know how to get there [TS]

00:44:19   if you know how to get there we duck who [TS]

00:44:21   does a lot of holes looking for the roof [TS]

00:44:24   lines of underground seattle but by the [TS]

00:44:28   time I was in junior high of course I [TS]

00:44:30   knew there weren't city's underground [TS]

00:44:31   but I did suspect there might be [TS]

00:44:35   dungeons room right if you could just [TS]

00:44:37   find the entrance to the dungeons that [TS]

00:44:40   were I mean I'd sound like a dumb [TS]

00:44:42   seventh-grader I wasn't you don't but I [TS]

00:44:44   mean think about it like he got to the [TS]

00:44:45   point where you have a city that can [TS]

00:44:47   sustain she even to of chucky cheese [TS]

00:44:51   restaurant you have to imagine that [TS]

00:44:53   somebody had the forethought to put a [TS]

00:44:54   dungeon in like there's so many many [TS]

00:44:56   cool things that we hopefully were made [TS]

00:44:58   i'm guessing probably in the eighteen [TS]

00:44:59   hundreds that need attention right well [TS]

00:45:02   but there weren't there [TS]

00:45:03   1800 didn't play in Anchorage because [TS]

00:45:06   there was no 1800 language okay but you [TS]

00:45:09   know what I still think about my own [TS]

00:45:10   house and how expensive it would be to [TS]

00:45:12   retro actively install a dungeon or you [TS]

00:45:15   didn't want titles for awhile tunnels in [TS]

00:45:17   dungeons and like all my uncle I don't [TS]

00:45:19   wanna talk about it anymore understand [TS]

00:45:20   but uh you know i'm not talking about [TS]

00:45:22   shipping containers be ready in the [TS]

00:45:24   desert dungeon I'm talking about like [TS]

00:45:25   stonewalled dunno you're not like that [TS]

00:45:28   like 12 year old girl in a reader's [TS]

00:45:29   digest article not know about that kind [TS]

00:45:31   of thing not back with a pipe marina [TS]

00:45:35   heroin know that is harrowing I don't [TS]

00:45:37   think about that you make a sexy [TS]

00:45:39   attention haha there be a second [TS]

00:45:42   component today let there be other would [TS]

00:45:44   be you know there be a derby safes down [TS]

00:45:47   there and stuff you know it be full US [TS]

00:45:49   agency say it would be safe it would [TS]

00:45:51   probably be comfortable [TS]

00:45:52   well no but I mean safe there were no [TS]

00:45:54   I'm sorry I mean I might have a problem [TS]

00:45:56   sometimes of using words but it would [TS]

00:45:58   probably be it would be a a secure [TS]

00:46:00   location [TS]

00:46:01   that's right better put and I bet you [TS]

00:46:02   could make it comfortable i would be [TS]

00:46:04   very can be made a barn barn number I'd [TS]

00:46:06   be so comfortable down there really i [TS]

00:46:08   would everyone so I am doing is if you [TS]

00:46:10   ring the doorbell it would flash a light [TS]

00:46:12   downstairs and then I would then i'd go [TS]

00:46:14   on the closed-circuit TV and I would [TS]

00:46:16   look at you and be decided to pull the [TS]

00:46:18   track towards redhead make a decision [TS]

00:46:20   then but I never had any ninja I had [TS]

00:46:26   never had any affection for ninja dhum [TS]

00:46:28   and I don't know whether it's because I [TS]

00:46:31   i was introduced to Bruce leave the same [TS]

00:46:33   way that other people were like you [TS]

00:46:34   certainly he was around in my childhood [TS]

00:46:37   all the sort of come from fighting was [TS]

00:46:39   all there [TS]

00:46:40   it just never I never identified I can [TS]

00:46:42   tell you why this work [TS]

00:46:44   so here we're talking about the very [TS]

00:46:45   early eighties ninjas were still cool [TS]

00:46:48   ninjas were still a new-ish idea i think [TS]

00:46:51   america got burned out on ninjas there's [TS]

00:46:53   too many fucking ninjas today they're [TS]

00:46:55   were they're moving they're literally [TS]

00:46:57   they're ruining TV shows that are on TV [TS]

00:46:58   right now there's too many inches [TS]

00:47:00   you're telling me they're ninjas on TV [TS]

00:47:01   right now they're ruining TV shows [TS]

00:47:03   here's the thing ninja I mean there's [TS]

00:47:05   people who have like I think is [TS]

00:47:06   published theories about this the more [TS]

00:47:08   ninjas that you add to something less [TS]

00:47:09   interesting it gets you need one ninja [TS]

00:47:11   that you almost never see that's cool [TS]

00:47:14   it's sort of like the fifth roommate get [TS]

00:47:16   off tonight I'm look at this photo right [TS]

00:47:17   now is completely freaking your roommate [TS]

00:47:19   is a ninja your TV shows more interested [TS]

00:47:21   in this is why this is why i sought i [TS]

00:47:24   would want to be a monk like monks were [TS]

00:47:26   the coolest monk shout like well like [TS]

00:47:28   you know like in D&D like the character [TS]

00:47:30   class because among could do stuff they [TS]

00:47:32   had the vibrating palm they could go [TS]

00:47:33   down I think they could fall four feet [TS]

00:47:35   per level remember what's what good is [TS]

00:47:38   vibrating bomb right you don't get the [TS]

00:47:41   vibe [TS]

00:47:41   well alright easy but you can do stuff [TS]

00:47:44   you can do all kinds of stuff it was it [TS]

00:47:46   was sort of like what was it was like it [TS]

00:47:48   was part lot of fighter maybe some [TS]

00:47:50   clerical there's a lot of dexterity and [TS]

00:47:52   one of the cool thing was if memory [TS]

00:47:54   serves forgive me please don't hit me on [TS]

00:47:55   this I'm pretty sure you could fall four [TS]

00:47:57   feet per level by like bouncing off the [TS]

00:48:00   wall [TS]

00:48:01   nuttin monks were the coolest that [TS]

00:48:04   doesn't seem that cool [TS]

00:48:05   why would I want cool i want to fall [TS]

00:48:07   four feet 44 level if I could cast if I [TS]

00:48:11   could come [TS]

00:48:11   norb mmm i think im gonna rest it's like [TS]

00:48:14   here's you cannot rest until you're [TS]

00:48:16   resting within its gotta got like a big [TS]

00:48:18   trouble in little china style electric [TS]

00:48:20   or hovering above his hand and the other [TS]

00:48:22   guy's palm is vibrating all right and [TS]

00:48:24   he's falling it doesn't have the same [TS]

00:48:25   visual appeal [TS]

00:48:26   I I admit but it just seems like you [TS]

00:48:29   guys on the campaign was always having [TS]

00:48:31   to take a nap [TS]

00:48:32   especially the lower level there's a lot [TS]

00:48:33   of napping for the magic people but i'm [TS]

00:48:36   not opposed to have not posted napping [TS]

00:48:37   as long as there's somebody watching [TS]

00:48:38   over so you're you're walking i would [TS]

00:48:40   also like at some point to get back to [TS]

00:48:42   secret spaces because as recently as [TS]

00:48:43   last night I had a dream about a secret [TS]

00:48:45   space i dream about them constantly I [TS]

00:48:46   think about secret spaces a lot but you [TS]

00:48:49   were walking down the path the bike path [TS]

00:48:52   in your in your three quarter size of [TS]

00:48:54   rolls-royce little eventually you were [TS]

00:48:57   thinking about conjuring things I was [TS]

00:49:00   as Ben you know that this is the thing [TS]

00:49:04   about junior high [TS]

00:49:05   you're not thinking at all the way [TS]

00:49:07   through but I was pretty sure that was [TS]

00:49:10   the way to be successful with girls [TS]

00:49:12   if i could i mean think about it I i [TS]

00:49:15   like you i still continue not thinking [TS]

00:49:18   all the way through [TS]

00:49:18   you don't have to sell me on this maybe [TS]

00:49:20   i'm standing on all school dance [TS]

00:49:22   yeah on come one guy does the fucking [TS]

00:49:24   car trick the cars just keep coming out [TS]

00:49:26   of his sleeves that's pretty cool where [TS]

00:49:28   these cars coming back and he's gonna [TS]

00:49:29   card rid of the cards and that's exactly [TS]

00:49:31   what i mean i'm leaning against the wall [TS]

00:49:33   and one cardini here comes here comes [TS]

00:49:36   the devos working in a coal mine and I [TS]

00:49:40   like Johnson but John make that over the [TS]

00:49:43   cool wall go out on the dance floor [TS]

00:49:47   am I going down and I'm my god i wish i [TS]

00:49:51   could go dance with the girls more heart [TS]

00:49:53   if I was over there just like oh by the [TS]

00:49:56   way [TS]

00:49:57   wow wow like who would be dancing with [TS]

00:50:01   these guys [TS]

00:50:02   nobody better on your own private divo [TS]

00:50:05   ii like people like people be taking [TS]

00:50:07   know and then we're all these cards [TS]

00:50:09   coming from and pretty soon I'd be like [TS]

00:50:11   the king of God be between the scene [TS]

00:50:13   fans and fans just coming obviously he [TS]

00:50:16   can't get rid of them the one part i [TS]

00:50:18   check it out his name's cardini I'd yeah [TS]

00:50:20   people are gonna know what we're talking [TS]

00:50:21   about because they don't hear our [TS]

00:50:23   private conversations are talking about [TS]

00:50:24   the the great the Great card artist [TS]

00:50:27   cardini I go to throw my cigarette away [TS]

00:50:29   there's a cigarette in my mouth is a [TS]

00:50:30   cigarette again and then what these cars [TS]

00:50:32   keeps a perfect fan of cards is produced [TS]

00:50:35   he can't get rid of the cards they just [TS]

00:50:36   keep coming out rozum away and then [TS]

00:50:39   they're back again you know he was [TS]

00:50:40   married to that lady [TS]

00:50:41   yes I didn't know that yeah and she wore [TS]

00:50:45   a bellhop outfit she tempted like it if [TS]

00:50:48   i can find that I didn't see that when i [TS]

00:50:49   was 12 i can find one that will wear [TS]

00:50:51   bellhop out but I be married service who [TS]

00:50:57   would stand there with the with the [TS]

00:50:58   wastebasket why through cards into it i [TS]

00:51:01   get rid of these cars are never certain [TS]

00:51:02   images there is a mile [TS]

00:51:05   she just has a like a chest higher smile [TS]

00:51:07   and then [TS]

00:51:08   just picking up to 10 with the cool [TS]

00:51:09   parties should never get sick of it [TS]

00:51:10   she's still think you're so interesting [TS]

00:51:12   because of your card sleeves [TS]

00:51:13   yep what whop omn orb close this is also [TS]

00:51:17   a particular story this is another boy [TS]

00:51:19   pattern is that like I'm pretty sure [TS]

00:51:21   there's this one thing that if I got [TS]

00:51:23   really good at this [TS]

00:51:24   everything would fall in place maybe [TS]

00:51:26   something that's an engine for some [TS]

00:51:27   people that's an orb what is why there [TS]

00:51:29   are guitar player yeah snatching the [TS]

00:51:31   coins mention the coins off your elbow [TS]

00:51:33   right there's so many things out there [TS]

00:51:34   we are like if I could just master this [TS]

00:51:36   one thing i do this in mind Frank was [TS]

00:51:38   walking around this tennis racket [TS]

00:51:39   I get out there I produce some cards out [TS]

00:51:41   of my sleeve and get more tail than [TS]

00:51:43   Sinatra did you did you ever do any [TS]

00:51:45   cigarette tricks my cigarette tricks [TS]

00:51:47   were very modest i would do match tricks [TS]

00:51:51   I could do some match tricks I could do [TS]

00:51:53   some very minor like first-level zippo [TS]

00:51:57   tricks have almost first-level zippo [TS]

00:51:59   tricks are good just just the whole like [TS]

00:52:01   this thing look like your fingers and [TS]

00:52:02   you open it with the thing you know oh [TS]

00:52:04   yeah this snap listen two fingers on [TS]

00:52:06   making I'm making sort of like a bowling [TS]

00:52:08   ball gesture with my finger your thumbs [TS]

00:52:10   on the bottom zippo and you you make it [TS]

00:52:12   pop it and make that noise you kind of [TS]

00:52:13   smell good and they smell good [TS]

00:52:15   well you know I curators before a long [TS]

00:52:16   time travel collection that's one of the [TS]

00:52:18   few collections I've ever had [TS]

00:52:19   oh you have like Vietnam suppose no i [TS]

00:52:22   didn't have like death suppose or [TS]

00:52:24   anything i have a Kiwanis mo had a [TS]

00:52:25   Chesterfield cigarettes ippo water's [TS]

00:52:28   ripple i told you that i want a story [TS]

00:52:31   yeah you do but it's I'm gonna hear when [TS]

00:52:33   you're ready to become a man you let me [TS]

00:52:35   know is what the guy said to me when he [TS]

00:52:37   saw Michael wanna zippo while when [TS]

00:52:40   you're ready to become a male come well [TS]

00:52:42   with you know I've discovered over the [TS]

00:52:44   course of this program that we have a [TS]

00:52:46   lot of listeners who are actually [TS]

00:52:48   Mason's kindly allowed to tell us that [TS]

00:52:52   John I think they are because they as [TS]

00:52:54   they have reminded me many many times [TS]

00:52:55   there is not admitting the Masonic a [TS]

00:52:59   brotherhood is not actually a secret [TS]

00:53:02   organization they are they are more than [TS]

00:53:05   happy to explain almost everything about [TS]

00:53:08   Mason durham Wow with the addenda that [TS]

00:53:11   i'm not actually use their last name [TS]

00:53:13   when referring to them it's like naaa [TS]

00:53:15   oh well it's just like they don't want [TS]

00:53:17   to hear from somebody else in their [TS]

00:53:19   Lodge [TS]

00:53:20   Oh [TS]

00:53:21   ok it's been a little bit like when [TS]

00:53:23   you're reporting you got on record you [TS]

00:53:25   got off the record you got background [TS]

00:53:27   and you got deep background on the [TS]

00:53:28   record is you can say that John Roderick [TS]

00:53:30   said this [TS]

00:53:31   yeah like off the record is you can say [TS]

00:53:33   somebody who is highly or like you can [TS]

00:53:35   use this information but you can't say [TS]

00:53:37   who did it [TS]

00:53:38   background I think you can only say [TS]

00:53:40   stuff like somebody highly placed in the [TS]

00:53:41   broader group said this deep background [TS]

00:53:44   is you can only use this information to [TS]

00:53:46   find other information i'm very [TS]

00:53:47   interested in deep background [TS]

00:53:48   yeah deep background is good I don't [TS]

00:53:50   happen as far as the Masons that I know [TS]

00:53:53   which is not not a small handful of [TS]

00:53:57   Mason's distributed across the country [TS]

00:54:00   in the world who contact me every time [TS]

00:54:03   we talk about a syndrome boy and say as [TS]

00:54:08   I've said before we are not a secret [TS]

00:54:11   organization I'd be happy to walk you [TS]

00:54:12   through the steps let me explain again [TS]

00:54:15   things that you can google about our [TS]

00:54:19   fraternal organization that those many [TS]

00:54:22   helps the service it they always point [TS]

00:54:24   to the service organization part and the [TS]

00:54:27   fact that they wear a elaborate costumes [TS]

00:54:31   is just part of the fun [TS]

00:54:32   schreiner is never taller than when he [TS]

00:54:33   Stoops to help a crippled child [TS]

00:54:35   wow I don't know or when he pleased to [TS]

00:54:37   have that printed on small car [TS]

00:54:39   ok ok believe me i would see those [TS]

00:54:41   nobody i would see those in the I would [TS]

00:54:43   look pretty smart driving around one of [TS]

00:54:45   those i wonder if any of our listeners [TS]

00:54:47   Shriners these even still exists right [TS]

00:54:50   this is the thing I'm sure it exists but [TS]

00:54:52   like I said I time so I still think of [TS]

00:54:55   that as something my grandfather is he [TS]

00:54:56   was a freemason [TS]

00:54:58   yeah and he was a Shriner he was in [TS]

00:54:59   schools and scottish rite he's scottish [TS]

00:55:01   rite and he was a Shriner and he was [TS]

00:55:04   pretty into it [TS]

00:55:06   oh yeah there's one about as he had the [TS]

00:55:08   bolo tie he had it going on [TS]

00:55:09   you didn't have the small car though not [TS]

00:55:11   that I ever saw he passed when I was [TS]

00:55:13   fairly young I there might have been a [TS]

00:55:14   car that was in the estate I just never [TS]

00:55:15   saw it I thought I think when you pass [TS]

00:55:17   as a Shriner I think the car is it sent [TS]

00:55:20   to the next young guy who killed your [TS]

00:55:21   time I think buried in the car [TS]

00:55:23   actually I comically my grandfather's [TS]

00:55:28   funeral was grotesque because first of [TS]

00:55:30   all they did a pretty crap job on his [TS]

00:55:32   makeup so so he looked like he'd [TS]

00:55:34   had some kind of like like bad plastic [TS]

00:55:37   surgery and then he had the scottish [TS]

00:55:39   rite funeral so they put all this stuff [TS]

00:55:41   in the coffin we were there we got to [TS]

00:55:42   see the stuff they put in the coffin [TS]

00:55:44   there's a whole thing that give you an [TS]

00:55:44   apron and gave me a magic wand maybe [TS]

00:55:47   some exploding cigarettes i'm not sure [TS]

00:55:48   but there's a whole bunch of stuff they [TS]

00:55:50   put in the casket with you to go to your [TS]

00:55:51   reward [TS]

00:55:52   tell me more about that yeah that's all [TS]

00:55:55   I don't remember super was pretty sad [TS]

00:55:56   when he died [TS]

00:55:57   what was the what was the number one [TS]

00:56:00   thing you saw in his casket that may do [TS]

00:56:03   ok so far it's crazy i was 12 but also i [TS]

00:56:07   don't think we were actively encouraged [TS]

00:56:09   to be super involved in that part of it [TS]

00:56:11   it was like they got the last bite at [TS]

00:56:12   the Apple before they close the lid and [TS]

00:56:14   so I don't know what went in there there [TS]

00:56:16   there could i I don't think there's a [TS]

00:56:17   whole car but they you know it's like [TS]

00:56:19   they were pending might imagine locks [TS]

00:56:21   they were pounding their seal wings into [TS]

00:56:23   his coffin [TS]

00:56:24   mmm yeah so he was pretty into that [TS]

00:56:30   yeah I i assume that it's still around i [TS]

00:56:33   guess you're gonna find out people you [TS]

00:56:35   can write a letter to John if you would [TS]

00:56:36   like to talk about friends and no no I [TS]

00:56:39   know I know plenty about Freemasonry and [TS]

00:56:41   I have a good sense of the members of [TS]

00:56:43   our community Mason is blind extend our [TS]

00:56:46   extended family includes many Mason's [TS]

00:56:48   I've been school some momentum as the [TS]

00:56:50   razor Mason's but the oh and we made it [TS]

00:56:54   we made a terrible mistake about about [TS]

00:56:56   the knights of columbus and that I was [TS]

00:56:58   corrected on that very intelligently I [TS]

00:57:01   didn't but well no you didn't but I did [TS]

00:57:03   there there there there a Catholic group [TS]

00:57:05   there's nothing lead over to you and [TS]

00:57:07   here's the problem you and I sometimes [TS]

00:57:09   understanding very understand something [TS]

00:57:10   very well in life and in our head and [TS]

00:57:13   then somehow we each manage to say the [TS]

00:57:15   exact opposite of what the true thing is [TS]

00:57:17   that we improving though we know better [TS]

00:57:18   because we have a kind of intellectual [TS]

00:57:21   dyslexia [TS]

00:57:22   yes and yes and or and yes I know but [TS]

00:57:26   but so far i have never been Shriners [TS]

00:57:30   planed and I wasn't bad so I don't want [TS]

00:57:33   to hear about masonry again because I'm [TS]

00:57:36   very up on it but i do want to hear [TS]

00:57:38   about Shriners Frank yes is my guess is [TS]

00:57:42   i think it is like all these groups it [TS]

00:57:44   is is presented as a public service [TS]

00:57:46   organization which is smart [TS]

00:57:48   I think I think you have to be [TS]

00:57:49   introduced to the group like sponsored [TS]

00:57:51   if you like again like AAA yeah and then [TS]

00:57:54   then you probably do a lot of scut work [TS]

00:57:55   for a while [TS]

00:57:56   you gotta like I don't know a couple [TS]

00:57:58   cigars wash cars i bet there stuff where [TS]

00:58:01   there's a hazing period maybe I know [TS]

00:58:02   there's a lot of spanking and they act [TS]

00:58:04   like the blindfold jacqueline three off [TS]

00:58:05   a cliff that's the Masons right [TS]

00:58:07   my mom is banking my mom well here's [TS]

00:58:11   what my mom said my mom so here my mom [TS]

00:58:15   loves all people to the same degree [TS]

00:58:18   which is to say not very much [TS]

00:58:20   yeah but she both my mom and my dad I've [TS]

00:58:23   said this before [TS]

00:58:25   neither one of them they were they were [TS]

00:58:26   the two least racist people I've ever [TS]

00:58:28   met in my life they have no they had no [TS]

00:58:30   a they saw no color at a time when that [TS]

00:58:33   was very unusual but my mom was racist [TS]

00:58:38   against two groups of people hillbillies [TS]

00:58:41   we've talked about this a lot she's [TS]

00:58:43   still races to conceal Billy's liquid [TS]

00:58:46   supposed to eat it because well that's [TS]

00:58:49   how she described that's where she's [TS]

00:58:51   from yeah she's from she's like you [TS]

00:58:54   think you and you don't know from rural [TS]

00:58:55   ohio and 1604 see you don't know for [TS]

00:58:58   ohio and if you cross the if you cross [TS]

00:59:01   the border of of one County and go into [TS]

00:59:04   the other County you're now in hillbilly [TS]

00:59:06   country and she hates them [TS]

00:59:07   she hates them shapes them so [TS]

00:59:09   passionately she says things all the [TS]

00:59:11   time like we never should've bought the [TS]

00:59:14   Civil War we should let the South secede [TS]

00:59:16   and they would be a third world country [TS]

00:59:17   we would destroy them in war and I'm [TS]

00:59:19   like okay mom [TS]

00:59:21   it's a term that she still uses [TS]

00:59:23   disparagingly about look at those [TS]

00:59:24   hillbilly's over there [TS]

00:59:26   I know she won't do that but like Trump [TS]

00:59:29   culture of she's just like we should let [TS]

00:59:32   them succeed and then we would destroy [TS]

00:59:34   them in war not like later we should let [TS]

00:59:37   them build their own economy we should [TS]

00:59:39   have let them keep their evil practice [TS]

00:59:41   it's good it's like Muhammad Ali in the [TS]

00:59:42   rope-a-dope be like let them wear [TS]

00:59:43   themselves out and then BOOM [TS]

00:59:45   well yeah she was like that whole that [TS]

00:59:47   whole week we fought the war the wrong [TS]

00:59:48   time I guess it's a philosophy like the [TS]

00:59:51   whole states rights garbage and keep the [TS]

00:59:54   Union together we should have ignored [TS]

00:59:56   that whole thing and fought the actual [TS]

00:59:58   war about slavery [TS]

00:59:59   [Music] [TS]

00:59:59   [Music] [TS]

01:00:00   later and then defeated the south and [TS]

01:00:03   salted the earth [TS]

01:00:04   I'm like hey hey hey hey Sherman's march [TS]

01:00:07   like cool your jets it like this is not [TS]

01:00:11   a thing that we still talk about like oh [TS]

01:00:13   it's a thing I still talk about so she [TS]

01:00:15   doesn't so she's raced against him [TS]

01:00:16   because she's like the opposite of a way [TS]

01:00:18   of Faulkner character sheets so she's [TS]

01:00:22   forgotten but she's not forgotten [TS]

01:00:24   something very different [TS]

01:00:25   no she's so north and she says things [TS]

01:00:27   all the time like this is this is the [TS]

01:00:29   crazy thing like she sometimes talks [TS]

01:00:31   about Bonaparte like the Frenchman yeah [TS]

01:00:36   Napoleon we all call them we all called [TS]

01:00:38   him Napoleon but she still talks about [TS]

01:00:40   Bonaparte in a way that has been [TS]

01:00:44   transmitted through the generations of [TS]

01:00:47   her family from a time when they over [TS]

01:00:51   when he was a living person and they had [TS]

01:00:54   a nickname for him and he represented a [TS]

01:00:56   certain idea of like internationalism [TS]

01:01:01   aunty aunty British Empire ism like [TS]

01:01:06   she'll chill refer to Bonaparte wow i'm [TS]

01:01:09   like punk apart the way like people in [TS]

01:01:12   you know the early 20th century would [TS]

01:01:14   refer to Germans the Huns well yeah or [TS]

01:01:16   like it had this implication of not just [TS]

01:01:18   identifying your ethnic or geographic [TS]

01:01:20   background but something about your [TS]

01:01:21   character [TS]

01:01:22   it's absolutely about his character and [TS]

01:01:24   she she refers to him familiar [TS]

01:01:26   familiarly as though we would say like [TS]

01:01:29   Oh Bush you know or bush to or whatever [TS]

01:01:32   she's like well Bonaparte would have [TS]

01:01:34   blah blah blah [TS]

01:01:35   Wow Bonaparte on apart but a so she has [TS]

01:01:39   several of those things and some of them [TS]

01:01:41   seem like they have been translated [TS]

01:01:43   through the quicker side of her family [TS]

01:01:44   from like Calvinist x small small [TS]

01:01:51   prejudices against a against like people [TS]

01:01:56   of different sexes like not against [TS]

01:01:58   people of different nationalities but [TS]

01:01:59   you know it's like there's a doctrinaire [TS]

01:02:01   like this day I know you're talking [TS]

01:02:02   about like the in it's almost like the [TS]

01:02:04   way that people talk about nothing all [TS]

01:02:07   garrison keillor here but like you know [TS]

01:02:08   Lutheran's vs Presbyterians vs however [TS]

01:02:12   like you'd like [TS]

01:02:13   most people today who are let's say a [TS]

01:02:15   religious or non-religious ago that is [TS]

01:02:18   so weird that sounds like the butter [TS]

01:02:20   battle book like what we talked about [TS]

01:02:22   these are non-existent distinctions [TS]

01:02:23   they're all just Jesus people like oh no [TS]

01:02:25   my mom has very very strong or idea the [TS]

01:02:28   Eucharist is flatly wrong [TS]

01:02:30   yeah every single different Protestant [TS]

01:02:32   denomination my mom could make very [TS]

01:02:34   sweeping generalizations about their can [TS]

01:02:36   we would like that about the Baptist a [TS]

01:02:37   little bit [TS]

01:02:38   oh sure everybody was the Battle didn't [TS]

01:02:40   have to seem pretty extreme actually [TS]

01:02:42   turns out my friend John went back to [TS]

01:02:43   school for a while there was no dancing [TS]

01:02:46   there's no music and it wasn't like we [TS]

01:02:48   did a lot of dancing at the christian [TS]

01:02:49   church but the Baptist seeing the little [TS]

01:02:52   bit and also the Baptist were famous no [TS]

01:02:53   offense to the Baptist's out there but [TS]

01:02:55   the passes are kind of famously [TS]

01:02:56   evangelical at a time before that became [TS]

01:03:00   a thing like it like in the eighties you [TS]

01:03:02   got used to everybody being like [TS]

01:03:04   evangelical in your face but the Baptist [TS]

01:03:05   if you'd like to show you come to my [TS]

01:03:07   church you know you go to window [TS]

01:03:08   Christian Church you're going to go to [TS]

01:03:10   VBS you're gonna make some shit out of [TS]

01:03:11   popsicle sticks you're gonna sing an [TS]

01:03:13   awesome song in a major key you go and [TS]

01:03:15   Barry's gonna be like hey come back [TS]

01:03:16   anytime you go to the Baptist Church and [TS]

01:03:18   like you know you know you're Catholic [TS]

01:03:19   I'm going to hell right like you you [TS]

01:03:21   don't you understand like you [TS]

01:03:23   nine-year-old that you're gonna have [TS]

01:03:24   some problems in the afterlife [TS]

01:03:26   The Liberator the big Hollywood fat cats [TS]

01:03:28   these Vatican fat cats are not telling [TS]

01:03:29   you about [TS]

01:03:30   it's that was the Moral Majority the [TS]

01:03:32   rise of the moral authority believe [TS]

01:03:33   they're well i mean i remember that is [TS]

01:03:36   being early eighties because they [TS]

01:03:37   definitely was making a nineteen eighty [TS]

01:03:39   i think is around the time that that [TS]

01:03:41   really kicked in yeah and before that [TS]

01:03:43   yes mom like mom would say things about [TS]

01:03:45   Baptist that made it sound like they [TS]

01:03:47   were eating dirt like the old Hill [TS]

01:03:49   people [TS]

01:03:50   yeah they lived on Raw crawdad that's [TS]

01:03:52   when there was no crime at it states and [TS]

01:03:56   and and they would fight with banjos or [TS]

01:03:58   whatever whatever but but then all of a [TS]

01:04:03   sudden factors were everywhere and this [TS]

01:04:05   could be harder easy use this then I [TS]

01:04:06   don't think miss net now I think I can't [TS]

01:04:10   mean an indie rocker without finding out [TS]

01:04:12   their southern baptist right they are [TS]

01:04:15   like a very large part portion of [TS]

01:04:17   American and you know they started off [TS]

01:04:19   for 20 years like hothouse flowers and [TS]

01:04:20   then we started releasing them i think [TS]

01:04:22   in the mid-2000s yeah there was that [TS]

01:04:24   moment when a Christian rock [TS]

01:04:26   two different directions on one [TS]

01:04:27   direction it was the direction of like [TS]

01:04:30   Guy Fieri rock where people had were [TS]

01:04:32   wearing bowling shirts with flames on [TS]

01:04:33   them and they were like Jesus my arm and [TS]

01:04:38   then the other Christian rock which is [TS]

01:04:40   like man bun rock where everybody had a [TS]

01:04:42   tattoos of doves on their chests and [TS]

01:04:47   we're playing the glockenspiel very [TS]

01:04:48   aggressively pursue and it's like whoa [TS]

01:04:51   that's where we're finding Jesus that [TS]

01:04:53   way to there's a lot of different [TS]

01:04:55   Jesus's and I don't know which one I [TS]

01:04:58   don't know which kind of rock to follow [TS]

01:04:59   uh-huh up but you'll tell it like a [TS]

01:05:02   footprint on the radio [TS]

01:05:04   my wife better than me my wife can clock [TS]

01:05:06   it will be some kind of song that comes [TS]

01:05:08   on that sounds pretty indie rock and [TS]

01:05:09   should be returned office Christian rock [TS]

01:05:10   was like yeah come on this is just a [TS]

01:05:12   gentle indie-rock I feel like there's a [TS]

01:05:14   setting on the compressors at the [TS]

01:05:17   mastering studio who which is like let's [TS]

01:05:20   just set those compressors to Christian [TS]

01:05:22   it's a little too jolly oh your time [TS]

01:05:24   major key [TS]

01:05:25   yeah right he made a week at all but [TS]

01:05:27   there's something you know um they sound [TS]

01:05:29   like they're smiling when they're [TS]

01:05:31   singing which is not a bad thing but if [TS]

01:05:33   you can really tell that it sounds like [TS]

01:05:34   someone smiling it seems manic well any [TS]

01:05:37   better smiles when these things but it's [TS]

01:05:39   a grimace smile it's like wow that's [TS]

01:05:41   what I want breakfast right but uh but [TS]

01:05:46   yeah you're right there smiling because [TS]

01:05:47   if you drown it lets the devil and but i [TS]

01:05:52   would like shit [TS]

01:05:53   another that over the last 10 years i [TS]

01:05:56   have realized that my mom still has very [TS]

01:05:59   very strong opinions about the war of [TS]

01:06:01   the roses my goodness really she takes a [TS]

01:06:04   side in the war of the roses and Kenya [TS]

01:06:08   and has and there are people within the [TS]

01:06:10   British royal family today that my mom [TS]

01:06:12   cannot abide for reasons that have to do [TS]

01:06:16   with the war of the roses [TS]

01:06:18   I'm just like this is not this is not a [TS]

01:06:20   regular thing so just just coming up for [TS]

01:06:23   me and the audience here your mom grew [TS]

01:06:26   up on a farm she did and I mean ink with [TS]

01:06:30   very very modest means right i mean it's [TS]

01:06:33   pretty her grandfather was a postman and [TS]

01:06:37   being a postman during the Depression [TS]

01:06:40   was actually a pretty good job because [TS]

01:06:42   it was a regular job you're gonna lose [TS]

01:06:43   it he always was also a farmer but like [TS]

01:06:46   the postman thing but she wasn't going [TS]

01:06:48   to kumon to learn about the war of the [TS]

01:06:50   roses [TS]

01:06:51   no this is something that was this was [TS]

01:06:53   part of the fan i'm guessing here this [TS]

01:06:55   is part of the families what oral [TS]

01:06:57   history like what we think what we [TS]

01:06:59   believe in like we're cooking Brooke [TS]

01:07:01   people not Pepsi people this this came [TS]

01:07:03   up like around the house like more than [TS]

01:07:04   once a month [TS]

01:07:05   well her great-grandfather course fought [TS]

01:07:08   in the Civil War for ohio and at that if [TS]

01:07:12   you look at a map of the south and the [TS]

01:07:15   map of America at the time the South [TS]

01:07:18   comes all the way up so on the east [TS]

01:07:22   coast there like all the way from Maine [TS]

01:07:25   all the way down to maryland you know [TS]

01:07:30   the north is pretty long from there [TS]

01:07:32   versus the South but at all at the point [TS]

01:07:36   where Ohio touches the lake the North [TS]

01:07:38   was exactly one statewide which is ohio [TS]

01:07:42   and soho the Civil War had a lot of the [TS]

01:07:47   Civil War had a different feeling i [TS]

01:07:49   think from the vantage point of Ohio [TS]

01:07:52   because the South was much wider than [TS]

01:07:56   the north at that point and if you look [TS]

01:07:58   even within the state of Ohio and the [TS]

01:08:00   patterns of migration of people to the [TS]

01:08:03   west southern Ohio is still it was [TS]

01:08:07   southern how was populated with [TS]

01:08:09   scots-irish and so who are the people [TS]

01:08:12   that my mom is referring to when she [TS]

01:08:14   says her business that's that's totally [TS]

01:08:16   my family that's yeah I'm from [TS]

01:08:17   Cincinnati most my family from Kentucky [TS]

01:08:19   and there are like all uniformly english [TS]

01:08:22   and irish yeah and then in the middle of [TS]

01:08:24   Ohio there are people that you know [TS]

01:08:27   there are sort of what you would call [TS]

01:08:30   northerners from a Puritan kind of [TS]

01:08:35   mercantile I have to amend that because [TS]

01:08:37   I almost made a giant error also let the [TS]

01:08:38   Germans I mean it's in all right we're [TS]

01:08:40   not there's a lot of amino in [TS]

01:08:41   Pennsylvania and throughout Ohio but [TS]

01:08:43   anyway sorry continue [TS]

01:08:44   actually I would feel bad if I didn't [TS]

01:08:46   acknowledge my German here you have to [TS]

01:08:47   acknowledge the Germans made me look at [TS]

01:08:48   my last Merlin Mann [TS]

01:08:50   and it's not oh man but then right [TS]

01:08:53   across the top of Ohio there's this tiny [TS]

01:08:55   thin bandits got only be a hundred and [TS]

01:08:57   twenty miles wide that is a Quakers and [TS]

01:09:03   like Quakers and pen and pencil in your [TS]

01:09:06   doctor you know German calvinists and [TS]

01:09:10   Pennsylvania Dutch we have learned is a [TS]

01:09:11   misnomer right there actually works [TS]

01:09:14   German th and really enjoyed exactly so [TS]

01:09:18   so there's this tiny little band of what [TS]

01:09:21   they I think in ohio regarded as the [TS]

01:09:23   last vestige of set of civilization in [TS]

01:09:27   the entire like middle portion of of [TS]

01:09:31   North America and they really stood they [TS]

01:09:34   felt like a bowl work and they and some [TS]

01:09:37   of that persisted at least into the [TS]

01:09:39   fifties i'm not sure how people in like [TS]

01:09:42   toledo and then work feel now I i [TS]

01:09:47   imagine that it's all just denny's and [TS]

01:09:49   Sherry's they're like it is everyone [TS]

01:09:50   else now but then it was yeah it's [TS]

01:09:53   pretty strong feelings at but but what's [TS]

01:09:55   crazy about it and I think it's the same [TS]

01:09:58   in my father's family their connection [TS]

01:10:00   to the past is still so strong even as [TS]

01:10:04   they even as they have lost exactly what [TS]

01:10:07   their problem was exactly what there's [TS]

01:10:09   what was going on right yeah but like my [TS]

01:10:13   mom if you start talking about the [TS]

01:10:14   Lancaster's and a you know and like the [TS]

01:10:19   regular in the later as is yeah she's [TS]

01:10:22   gonna she's going to like this whole [TS]

01:10:25   business with Richard the third [TS]

01:10:26   she's got real strong feelings about it [TS]

01:10:28   see the hunchback in the parking lot in [TS]

01:10:30   the parking lot that's a terrific Morsi [TS]

01:10:32   song yeah that's a ROG back in the part [TS]

01:10:34   well well launched by the bar law did [TS]

01:10:38   you read that story recently about what [TS]

01:10:40   Morrissey appeared on the Johnny Carson [TS]

01:10:41   show and the and the other guest on the [TS]

01:10:43   program was the Morsi finally appeared [TS]

01:10:46   on the Carson show in like nineteen [TS]

01:10:48   ninety-one right after Carson had [TS]

01:10:51   announced his retirement before he was [TS]

01:10:53   gone [TS]

01:10:53   Wow and the other guest on the program [TS]

01:10:55   that day Bill Cosby oh my god and so [TS]

01:11:00   should be in ESPN 30 for 30 on that [TS]

01:11:02   that's me [TS]

01:11:03   using it's an incredible moment in top [TS]

01:11:06   headline 25 years ago Morsi ruined Bill [TS]

01:11:08   Cosby's appearance on the tonight show [TS]

01:11:10   yeah well not only rude but like [TS]

01:11:11   actually rule like Johnny Carson said on [TS]

01:11:14   Air several times i wish i was already [TS]

01:11:16   retired [TS]

01:11:17   Wow because there was all this pent-up [TS]

01:11:20   Morrissey energy the smiths had never [TS]

01:11:22   appeared the smiths never had a hit [TS]

01:11:24   really like so within the popular [TS]

01:11:27   culture there was very little actual [TS]

01:11:30   awareness about the smiths and who the [TS]

01:11:31   hell is Morrissey and Morrissey had gone [TS]

01:11:34   on record several times saying likewise [TS]

01:11:36   belinda carlisle on the Carson show and [TS]

01:11:38   I'm not in his in his wonderful style is [TS]

01:11:42   he is humble and an admirable style [TS]

01:11:46   thank you but he arrived on the scene [TS]

01:11:48   and like everyone in the audience was a [TS]

01:11:51   morrissey superfamily be completely [TS]

01:11:53   disrupted the show ruined it in every [TS]

01:11:55   way screaming for Morrissey throughout [TS]

01:11:58   and you can see Bill Cosby and Carson [TS]

01:12:01   these two dinosaurs at the you know from [TS]

01:12:04   the end of the from the the long-ago [TS]

01:12:06   times trying to grasp you know they make [TS]

01:12:09   comments about people with blue hair and [TS]

01:12:12   it really really like a transitional [TS]

01:12:16   moment and I thought that you would I [TS]

01:12:18   thought that'd be a thing that you would [TS]

01:12:19   love also i mean i think about this from [TS]

01:12:22   my own point of view today there's a few [TS]

01:12:24   things that are more insufferable than [TS]

01:12:26   allowed audience screaming [TS]

01:12:28   enthusiastically for something you've [TS]

01:12:30   never heard of its kind of maddening [TS]

01:12:33   I'm trying not to be that guy because [TS]

01:12:35   I've been that guy and I've been on the [TS]

01:12:37   other end of that I've been on the other [TS]

01:12:38   end of that but I mean like there's [TS]

01:12:39   something like on a show like that much [TS]

01:12:41   especially with let's be honest with a [TS]

01:12:42   guy coming out [TS]

01:12:43   I mean that's that was probably that was [TS]

01:12:46   probably not the best place for him to [TS]

01:12:48   be but it but it was a triumph for him [TS]

01:12:51   right in the it in that he was able to [TS]

01:12:53   Akita invite arrived he had he was [TS]

01:12:56   finally on the Carson show and and i [TS]

01:13:00   think that there was a really good quote [TS]

01:13:01   from Morrissey when he was like I am [TS]

01:13:03   tired of being this successful with no [TS]

01:13:08   recognition to be set weary i'm weary [TS]

01:13:11   I'm I'm so we [TS]

01:13:14   the position where success at this level [TS]

01:13:17   the level so weary that doesn't mention [TS]

01:13:20   i'm weary haha you're Morrissey is [TS]

01:13:24   amazing i picked this the and I'm [TS]

01:13:26   sticking to it all day i cannot imitate [TS]

01:13:30   morrissey four lots and lots of reasons [TS]

01:13:32   which you seen the footage of when they [TS]

01:13:36   might be giants from there the right [TS]

01:13:38   it's incredible it's we talked about [TS]

01:13:40   this i guess but like I can't speak for [TS]

01:13:42   the johns but they seem so like [TS]

01:13:45   legitimately joyful to be playing with [TS]

01:13:46   Doc Severinsen yeah and they've got the [TS]

01:13:48   whole band crankin and you know flans [TS]

01:13:51   always had that on stage a that flames [TS]

01:13:55   went on underwent a transformation in a [TS]

01:13:58   way that like lanell had a certain [TS]

01:14:01   onstage quality that he retains to this [TS]

01:14:06   day he'll easily was like the talented [TS]

01:14:08   dork at the talent contest but like he'd [TS]

01:14:11   never really seemed like he was that [TS]

01:14:12   happy to be up there but he was kind of [TS]

01:14:14   smirk smiling adorable and looking at [TS]

01:14:18   the camera to a certain degree like the [TS]

01:14:20   immigration he was officially recognized [TS]

01:14:22   he was sort of the frontman of that era [TS]

01:14:24   and he was a he was he was present in [TS]

01:14:30   what was what he was experiencing and [TS]

01:14:32   and still is in the same way but flans [TS]

01:14:35   early on never looked at the camera like [TS]

01:14:37   if you look at that Carson thing he is [TS]

01:14:40   not looking at the camera at all and [TS]

01:14:42   he's doing his he's doing his flans [TS]

01:14:45   thing and kind of not in the background [TS]

01:14:47   exactly but like he's herky-jerky and [TS]

01:14:50   he's that was part of it the bit that [TS]

01:14:53   like if you don't like a like a there's [TS]

01:14:55   somebody like kind of bits visually for [TS]

01:14:57   them that were part of their thing like [TS]

01:14:59   the big head guy and all that but also [TS]

01:15:00   in all their videos there's a lot of [TS]

01:15:02   deliberately like meta herky-jerky dance [TS]

01:15:05   moves that are clearly to me like meant [TS]

01:15:08   to be like an art like art rock it's a [TS]

01:15:11   parody of rock and roll and it's like [TS]

01:15:14   that you know i love the they might be [TS]

01:15:15   giants invented the term past the dude [TS]

01:15:17   that we use to this day like when crowd [TS]

01:15:19   surfing first became a thing I think [TS]

01:15:21   when I would refer to it as past the [TS]

01:15:22   dude and like I still use that term like [TS]

01:15:24   they had this like not a little [TS]

01:15:26   overwhelming but but [TS]

01:15:28   their distance from like the mainstream [TS]

01:15:30   rock stuff and insulin insulin era [TS]

01:15:32   friends were do that you know you it was [TS]

01:15:35   it was a tongue-in-cheek but now you can [TS]

01:15:37   see the life he legitimately just [TS]

01:15:38   fucking rocks out whatever that [TS]

01:15:41   transition was like not all of us say [TS]

01:15:44   pass the dude [TS]

01:15:45   still I should make that well it's not [TS]

01:15:47   the thing that it was but but if you [TS]

01:15:50   took plans work out of those early they [TS]

01:15:52   might be giants moments and it was just [TS]

01:15:55   Linnell [TS]

01:15:56   Oh singing and playing the accordion it [TS]

01:15:59   we wouldn't say that this was nerdy art [TS]

01:16:02   rock right it would just be it would [TS]

01:16:04   there be something going on lil playing [TS]

01:16:06   the keyboard especially be closer to [TS]

01:16:08   like solo jonathan richman where be fun [TS]

01:16:10   and enjoyable it would be hard kind of [TS]

01:16:12   thing it would be pop right yeah right [TS]

01:16:14   and and but something and this is the [TS]

01:16:17   thing it was something happened in in [TS]

01:16:20   within the they might be giants dynamic [TS]

01:16:21   particularly in Flansburg a person I [TS]

01:16:24   know quite well that i do not i'm not [TS]

01:16:27   sure I was not following closely enough [TS]

01:16:29   to watch that transition and I think it [TS]

01:16:30   might have been when they added a live [TS]

01:16:32   band who wear flans took over to became [TS]

01:16:36   a different character on stage and then [TS]

01:16:38   was very much like looking at the [TS]

01:16:40   audience present in a different way ass [TS]

01:16:43   arrangements i mean not now windows so [TS]

01:16:45   far maybe as a conductor but like having [TS]

01:16:48   he adds so much of the color to what [TS]

01:16:51   makes that a memorable song no matter [TS]

01:16:53   who's singing it and he gets so much of [TS]

01:16:55   the palette and the texture and like [TS]

01:16:56   deciding what horns go we're on the [TS]

01:16:58   Carson show it feels like he is a member [TS]

01:17:01   of the severance and banned in a way [TS]

01:17:03   like he's interacting with the band [TS]

01:17:05   which is a huge compliment [TS]

01:17:07   we have I mean that's a hell of a band [TS]

01:17:10   yeah well when they appeared on [TS]

01:17:11   letterman for the first time and they [TS]

01:17:13   had Paul shaper and you got mugged away [TS]

01:17:15   on his hamon turn it down Paul but you [TS]

01:17:19   know you saw the soft plans more [TS]

01:17:21   comfortable or at least differently like [TS]

01:17:23   interacting differently comfortable [TS]

01:17:25   different comfortable is a perfect [TS]

01:17:27   description of they might be giants they [TS]

01:17:30   might be giants differently comfortable [TS]

01:17:32   I I definitely feel like a like an heir [TS]

01:17:39   to that in a way that I wouldn't have I [TS]

01:17:43   wouldn't have said before and like I [TS]

01:17:46   wouldn't have in 1989 thought to myself [TS]

01:17:48   I'm going to be an heir to this i mean [TS]

01:17:51   is that go down all the way to your like [TS]

01:17:52   comedy rock sellers [TS]

01:17:54   yeah but like you know it'sit's it might [TS]

01:17:56   be seen as ironic but your planet rock [TS]

01:17:58   and roll solo and you're getting into [TS]

01:18:00   your glasses are flying off your phone [TS]

01:18:01   on the stage and it's actually pretty [TS]

01:18:02   fucking great [TS]

01:18:03   yeah but I'm also aware that it is a [TS]

01:18:06   that is a pastiche of rock i'm aware [TS]

01:18:09   that i am i'm commenting on rock solo [TS]

01:18:12   but i'm also really really enjoying rock [TS]

01:18:14   solo and perhaps that's a product of the [TS]

01:18:18   era that it too and in that sense it's [TS]

01:18:22   an heir to Punk even through throughout [TS]

01:18:27   they might be giants refraction who [TS]

01:18:30   write like that to whatever degree that [TS]

01:18:32   they might be giants think of themselves [TS]

01:18:33   as part of a of the punk experience and [TS]

01:18:38   then they refracted that and you know [TS]

01:18:41   and that end up influencing me but you [TS]

01:18:44   wouldn't listen to my music and think [TS]

01:18:45   anything really [TS]

01:18:48   you wouldn't think you wouldn't think [TS]

01:18:50   Punk you certainly wouldn't think metal [TS]

01:18:52   you wouldn't think I mean it [TS]

01:18:53   the music as recorded sounds very much [TS]

01:18:56   like the the the very specific early in [TS]

01:19:03   the soft rock and that's not it's not in [TS]

01:19:08   the songwriting especially have trouble [TS]

01:19:10   putting your still have a lot of trouble [TS]

01:19:12   putting stuff in a box somebody to get [TS]

01:19:13   me a few days ago saying what he say so [TS]

01:19:17   i think some lines if he likes you know [TS]

01:19:19   the long winter stuff NEX ask me in [TS]

01:19:21   particular like what i would recommend [TS]

01:19:22   from today's artists that would be [TS]

01:19:25   comparable and and I felt like there's [TS]

01:19:26   like three different ways i wasn't sure [TS]

01:19:28   how to answer not least of which I'm not [TS]

01:19:29   up on music today but honestly without [TS]

01:19:31   kissing your ass [TS]

01:19:31   I've always had a hard time with the [TS]

01:19:33   comparisons people make I don't hear [TS]

01:19:35   what they're talking about [TS]

01:19:36   unless you're overtly like quoting a [TS]

01:19:38   judas priest or ac/dc cadence as a thing [TS]

01:19:41   I don't hear the RM stuff i don't hear [TS]

01:19:43   all that [TS]

01:19:44   right isn't even say which I heard a lot [TS]

01:19:47   at the time [TS]

01:19:48   really are you really influenced by XTC [TS]

01:19:50   and I was like not really and I don't [TS]

01:19:51   hear the comparison maybe shapes I the [TS]

01:19:56   the thing I hear a lot is and i heard it [TS]

01:19:59   at the time like people would come to [TS]

01:20:00   our live shows and they would they they [TS]

01:20:02   didn't tweet and be because it didn't [TS]

01:20:03   exist but they would email me or comment [TS]

01:20:07   on message boards and say I want to see [TS]

01:20:10   them live and they were like the fucking [TS]

01:20:12   who I loved them but then I listen to [TS]

01:20:14   the records and it's so soft i can't get [TS]

01:20:18   into the sounds so soft is very [TS]

01:20:21   different and I hear that still from [TS]

01:20:24   people that are like I listen to the [TS]

01:20:25   band and I just couldn't reconcile it [TS]

01:20:28   with the person i know from the podcast [TS]

01:20:29   because I like hard rock and you talk [TS]

01:20:33   about hard rock and I assumed it would [TS]

01:20:35   be harder rock and like yeah when we [TS]

01:20:38   were in the studio we were recording [TS]

01:20:40   those tunes and chris wallace was the [TS]

01:20:41   producer and it was an era specific era [TS]

01:20:45   that was suspicious of distortion [TS]

01:20:48   suspicious of loud bass and big heavy [TS]

01:20:52   bombastic stuff even coming from a [TS]

01:20:55   punk-rock places like that nana and what [TS]

01:20:59   your songs didn't want that I don't [TS]

01:21:01   think they could have been recorded in a [TS]

01:21:04   way that if there was one more guitar on [TS]

01:21:07   every track that was that just was going [TS]

01:21:09   through a rat pedal and playing the [TS]

01:21:11   e-string only hmm not open e only but [TS]

01:21:14   but following the chord progression but [TS]

01:21:16   just playing on one string down down [TS]

01:21:18   down down and it would just be more rock [TS]

01:21:22   it would sound rock [TS]

01:21:23   I sure I mean it's your music but like I [TS]

01:21:26   one of the things i treasure about in [TS]

01:21:30   particular uh the green 1i want a [TS]

01:21:32   pinfall is the is first of all I said [TS]

01:21:36   before I think it's a UH a triumph of [TS]

01:21:39   sequencing in the tracks and I really i [TS]

01:21:41   would not want you to feel like you had [TS]

01:21:45   to change blanket hardware you had to [TS]

01:21:47   change it'll be a breeze like I'm glad [TS]

01:21:49   there's not a dung dung on it'll be a [TS]

01:21:51   breeze because that is the pacing it's [TS]

01:21:53   an album it's a fucking album and I'll I [TS]

01:21:56   i liked it has its little [TS]

01:21:58   ups and it's downs and then that [TS]

01:21:59   triumphant like last third like when you [TS]

01:22:01   come out of the second side and starts [TS]

01:22:03   didn't get what I wanted and that one [TS]

01:22:06   started to start start aside to its not [TS]

01:22:09   do we ball with you this mornin to ya no [TS]

01:22:17   idea [TS]

01:22:18   stupid stupid bad see I'm not a poser I [TS]

01:22:21   know your songs like you don't know what [TS]

01:22:23   they're called [TS]

01:22:24   yeah but decided which i always think of [TS]

01:22:26   as the beginning of side to right [TS]

01:22:28   I don't intend it that way but that's [TS]

01:22:29   what it feels like because there's like [TS]

01:22:31   the big son said let go a bit crazy [TS]

01:22:32   ending you got the big like you know the [TS]

01:22:34   end and then you don't mind telling you [TS]

01:22:35   this who cares it's not Tom it's the tom [TS]

01:22:37   petty thing right tom petty's like look [TS]

01:22:39   man you gotta have the first one side [TS]

01:22:42   tues got to be killer [TS]

01:22:43   uh-huh and I was like yeah I mean we [TS]

01:22:45   gotta we gotta decide to but stupid is a [TS]

01:22:46   classic example of a song that when we [TS]

01:22:49   played it live it was much harder rock [TS]

01:22:51   than it was and even as we were [TS]

01:22:53   recording it the drummer Michael [TS]

01:22:54   Schilling said why are you not making [TS]

01:22:56   this more rock was like well I got all [TS]

01:22:59   these look like a chime i'm putting [TS]

01:23:01   chiming guitars on also the when you [TS]

01:23:03   play it live what I always remember if [TS]

01:23:05   i'm remembering correctly was it was [TS]

01:23:06   much more crunchy but also you would [TS]

01:23:09   play up the weird rhythms of that song [TS]

01:23:12   on in your guitar figures in a way that [TS]

01:23:14   you didn't hear in the seemingly i wrote [TS]

01:23:17   this on an acoustic guitar version on [TS]

01:23:19   the record right you would play out [TS]

01:23:20   these these funny little special try to [TS]

01:23:21   remember but I can't stop my head but I [TS]

01:23:23   would remember always thinking like why [TS]

01:23:25   is he making this like more janky but it [TS]

01:23:26   worked [TS]

01:23:27   yeah my contacts the accents are in [TS]

01:23:29   places that you wouldn't expect [TS]

01:23:31   yeah but i think that somehow you sing [TS]

01:23:32   so compliments how you sing so it makes [TS]

01:23:34   it more more pokey in the way that you [TS]

01:23:38   you kind of punctuated and do your own [TS]

01:23:40   Jamal what I thought [TS]

01:23:42   another great thing from having Giants a [TS]

01:23:43   lot like line run over like such a great [TS]

01:23:45   thing I was trying to make it pokey [TS]

01:23:47   because that's what girls like oh but i [TS]

01:23:50   think the example and I that I can't [TS]

01:23:52   believe that we have to we have [TS]

01:23:53   generated to actually a music critic [TS]

01:23:56   music critic in my own music here but [TS]

01:24:00   but but uh from later hater high which [TS]

01:24:03   should not be named that it was named [TS]

01:24:07   that by the by Josh Roosevelt the head [TS]

01:24:10   of the record company [TS]

01:24:11   in one of those weird last-minute things [TS]

01:24:13   where the song had always been called [TS]

01:24:15   Jet City we still put it on the setlists [TS]

01:24:18   as jet city really and at the last [TS]

01:24:21   possible minute it was it was jet city [TS]

01:24:23   when i started writing it was jet city [TS]

01:24:25   throughout the whole nine months before [TS]

01:24:27   the record came out but rosenfeld in [TS]

01:24:30   like that record label thing where the [TS]

01:24:32   record label owner is like haha maybe I [TS]

01:24:34   should make a contribution to this why [TS]

01:24:36   don't you change the name of the song [TS]

01:24:37   too problematic hater high and I was [TS]

01:24:41   vulnerable enough for susceptible enough [TS]

01:24:43   to that kind of contribution that was [TS]

01:24:46   like oh ok and then it went [TS]

01:24:48   Emmy seriously he said that as we were [TS]

01:24:50   doing the artwork for the for the record [TS]

01:24:52   you can do you still think of it as just [TS]

01:24:53   city it's absolutely jet-setting that's [TS]

01:24:56   what we write on are on our side it's a [TS]

01:24:58   way better sauce the way better name for [TS]

01:25:00   the song but the recording of that too [TS]

01:25:04   which when we play that new girl was [TS]

01:25:07   actually originally called a 14-point [TS]

01:25:08   type you know it's called 40-foot [TS]

01:25:10   motherfucker but uh but when we were [TS]

01:25:13   recording that song I mean when we play [TS]

01:25:14   when we play jet city live we play it [TS]

01:25:17   like a like a rolling stone song from [TS]

01:25:20   exile on main street yeah and when we [TS]

01:25:23   recorded it i mean that's how I wrote it [TS]

01:25:26   but then as we were recording we were [TS]

01:25:27   like why don't we get a violin player in [TS]

01:25:29   here and then the violin player we got [TS]

01:25:32   with was a sarah from chris's weird i [TS]

01:25:36   love her parts on that and she's playing [TS]

01:25:39   kind of fiddle she's doing a family [TS]

01:25:40   thing plus you got her don't you have [TS]

01:25:41   like a lot i like crazy harmonica on [TS]

01:25:43   that one [TS]

01:25:44   yeah fill in all kinds of other stuff [TS]

01:25:45   he'll meet hillbilly music that really [TS]

01:25:48   hillbilly faiz the song and what the [TS]

01:25:51   song what the way it was written and the [TS]

01:25:54   way I think now probably should have [TS]

01:25:56   been recorded was with some down to down [TS]

01:25:59   it you know like it should have just [TS]

01:26:00   been a rock and roll song but that [TS]

01:26:02   wasn't our instinct at the time it was [TS]

01:26:04   like let's throw the let's throw the [TS]

01:26:06   whole refrigerator at this and we don't [TS]

01:26:09   have it we don't have another another [TS]

01:26:12   song with like a hillbilly violin so [TS]

01:26:15   let's so that's one thing we haven't [TS]

01:26:17   explored yet let's put it on this song [TS]

01:26:19   you know like we were trying if you [TS]

01:26:21   listen to our music we're just trying [TS]

01:26:22   over and over to put [TS]

01:26:24   every style of everything in in the [TS]

01:26:27   records you have a credit for dr dre [TS]

01:26:29   keyboard memory serves [TS]

01:26:31   dr. dre keyboard Scott McCoy is on one [TS]

01:26:34   of the songs just standing in the studio [TS]

01:26:36   quietly and we have Scott McCoy on a [TS]

01:26:40   track where really we just we put up the [TS]

01:26:42   mics and he stood in there and stared at [TS]

01:26:44   us through the window maybe just [TS]

01:26:47   recorded Scott McCoy standing in a room [TS]

01:26:49   and we included on the track so it was [TS]

01:26:52   that implements a barrage of they might [TS]

01:26:54   be giants impulse to like let's a let's [TS]

01:26:59   do weird things even in the studio that [TS]

01:27:03   no one will ever know about it but it [TS]

01:27:04   would but it'll be fun and artistic but [TS]

01:27:08   the thing was we never develop the long [TS]

01:27:11   winters never developed a definable and [TS]

01:27:13   unified sound and that would enable [TS]

01:27:17   somebody like you now to say like oh [TS]

01:27:19   right [TS]

01:27:20   our city they sound like something yeah [TS]

01:27:23   yep service I mean reading or or [TS]

01:27:25   Interpol sounds like Joy Division who [TS]

01:27:28   and I'm and i use those examples as [TS]

01:27:31   ridiculous examples [TS]

01:27:33   Silversun Pickups sound like billy [TS]

01:27:36   corgan the smartest boy in the world but [TS]

01:27:40   you know there's not you can't even say [TS]

01:27:42   about the long winters like oh they're [TS]

01:27:44   rock and roll because not i mean that's [TS]

01:27:47   the way we that's why we are live and [TS]

01:27:48   i'm a rock-and-roll person but at the [TS]

01:27:52   time we just were we were going is [TS]

01:27:54   completely we were exploring the art of [TS]

01:27:57   recording as separate from the other [TS]

01:28:00   arts I'm glad you did I wouldn't change [TS]

01:28:02   a stitch of it iie a not really treasure [TS]

01:28:05   those records you don't see I mean as [TS]

01:28:07   much as like me what the worst you [TS]

01:28:10   didn't harm is is a really really good [TS]

01:28:12   record but in my head I still sometimes [TS]

01:28:14   think that it's I still encourage people [TS]

01:28:17   and hope you approve or don't hate me [TS]

01:28:20   for this but I still encourage people to [TS]

01:28:21   start with one of tend to fall I I think [TS]

01:28:24   you might even be able to enjoy where [TS]

01:28:26   she does harm or after that we have to [TS]

01:28:30   do the show chrono no not necessarily [TS]

01:28:32   I do think that the first record is you [TS]

01:28:35   know I was coming out of the Western [TS]

01:28:37   State hurricanes where we [TS]

01:28:38   we were very rock rock band and i was i [TS]

01:28:42   was making a lot of decisions there that [TS]

01:28:44   were reactive or they were reactionary [TS]

01:28:47   like the Hurricanes where this thing now [TS]

01:28:49   i'm doing this other thing which is [TS]

01:28:51   different and if you do a hurricane song [TS]

01:28:53   it's gonna sound really different super [TS]

01:28:55   consciously making it sound different by [TS]

01:28:58   pretend to fall [TS]

01:28:59   I was just writing songs and recording [TS]

01:29:01   them how I wanted and then putting the [TS]

01:29:05   days to bed which I talk to people all [TS]

01:29:07   the time whether like that was the first [TS]

01:29:08   record of yours I heard the time I like [TS]

01:29:10   this so weird and that's one where I was [TS]

01:29:15   like again maybe more consciously saying [TS]

01:29:18   like I want to get I want to bring some [TS]

01:29:20   rock and roll back into the band [TS]

01:29:22   I want the tunes to be a little bit more [TS]

01:29:24   rocking or you know to it to a degree [TS]

01:29:28   that doesn't seem incongruous but like [TS]

01:29:31   and you know and that was that was [TS]

01:29:33   successful I'm not successfully [TS]

01:29:35   defending the video a solid don't even [TS]

01:29:40   talk about the video almost any videos [TS]

01:29:44   no I wish States hurricanes on 29 live [TS]

01:29:48   yeah don't up still up on the YouTube [TS]

01:29:51   that's the problem with the Western [TS]

01:29:52   State hurricanes is that that was you i [TS]

01:29:54   was still coming out of the bun family [TS]

01:29:56   players with the with the Hurricanes and [TS]

01:29:58   the bun family players there was no song [TS]

01:30:00   that we could not ruin with it with a [TS]

01:30:02   different time change in them like a [TS]

01:30:05   different i'm seeing the true beauty [TS]

01:30:06   like this you don't like that say what [TS]

01:30:08   if we would have someone at the company [TS]

01:30:10   was hard way we make it harder to like [TS]

01:30:12   that what a driver stood up in the [TS]

01:30:14   middle of a song stop playing the drums [TS]

01:30:16   and played the French horn for 42 [TS]

01:30:18   minutes [TS]

01:30:19   that sounds cool i like completely [TS]

01:30:21   influenced by not even I mean not even [TS]

01:30:24   they might be giants influenced by just [TS]

01:30:26   like equal parts rush and circus [TS]

01:30:31   contraption [TS]

01:30:34   [Music] [TS]
