00:01:31   you're in college I think so yeah [TS]

00:01:34   oh my gosh you know you these certain [TS]

00:01:35   three-digit numbers just float around i [TS]

00:01:36   want to say actually you know what I've [TS]

00:01:38   got the door from it right here I stole [TS]

00:01:39   it when i left school [TS]

00:01:41   hey yeah I stole the door off my up [TS]

00:01:45   yeah it still has it still has a sticker [TS]

00:01:48   that you saw it still gets a little old [TS]

00:01:50   timey door with the window [TS]

00:01:51   oh yeah still got the JR Bob sticker on [TS]

00:01:57   wow so what number was find out hang on [TS]

00:02:00   to [TS]

00:02:03   doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo [TS]

00:02:06   doo-doo-doo-doo-doo food [TS]

00:02:09   ok this is the lesson of this listeners [TS]

00:02:12   is to steal the things that mean [TS]

00:02:14   something to you anymore to me you know [TS]

00:02:16   what I should have said because I was [TS]

00:02:17   right 289 289 yep 289 also a great Ford [TS]

00:02:24   engine is is that right yeah there's a [TS]

00:02:26   for the 289 was a hot rod ford motor [TS]

00:02:30   Oh rod to eat on the 289 it was the [TS]

00:02:33   cubic inches John yeah it doesn't seem [TS]

00:02:35   like a big motor compared to like 350 [TS]

00:02:38   for a 456 or a 456 but a 289 455 456 [TS]

00:02:44   whatever double-barrel heavy heavy ya [TS]

00:02:48   comin ya ni want to bore your hammies [TS]

00:02:51   you gotta help me and the Hemings mhm [TS]

00:02:54   Hemmings is where you would sell a Hemi [TS]

00:02:56   yeah you put some thrush on the [TS]

00:02:57   transmission [TS]

00:02:58   yeah give will put a little thrush put [TS]

00:03:00   some armor all on the tires got to roll [TS]

00:03:03   got it doesn't rush from looking [TS]

00:03:04   railings are you a big balance Sebastian [TS]

00:03:06   fan i remember when balanced Bastion [TS]

00:03:10   took over the world if the first i would [TS]

00:03:13   call them the first thuy isn't they [TS]

00:03:16   aren't the first we call them more mokey [TS]

00:03:17   when I think thuy I think of Cub or I [TS]

00:03:20   think of you like maybe the raincoats a [TS]

00:03:23   little bit boy covering the Redcoats [TS]

00:03:25   room you know couples cup is everyone's [TS]

00:03:28   your friend in New York City now I don't [TS]

00:03:31   know why I would sing a cup song as John [TS]

00:03:33   Flansburg didn't originally did that [TS]

00:03:36   song it's virtually tuneless it's [TS]

00:03:37   delightful [TS]

00:03:38   well you know that's a that's a John [TS]

00:03:41   Flansburg of the feature that's oh the [TS]

00:03:44   in which part the tunas well no no no no [TS]

00:03:47   but that's what that song is a big [TS]

00:03:49   feature for him in there set I I can't [TS]

00:03:51   imagine anybody else having written that [TS]

00:03:53   song by him and alas it was not well [TS]

00:03:56   that's a good note good a song it's a [TS]

00:03:58   drunken a song [TS]

00:03:59   yeah it's a good the ass of that song as [TS]

00:04:01   good as a good asked song only go back [TS]

00:04:04   in the stock balance best yeah don't [TS]

00:04:06   Sebastian I got into them on there like [TS]

00:04:07   second or third I think it got in on the [TS]

00:04:10   on the green album [TS]

00:04:11   yeah it wasn't a great one of the red [TS]

00:04:13   one but I know love the gray one in the [TS]

00:04:15   red one but that doesn't really seem [TS]

00:04:16   like your kind of music I was you know I [TS]

00:04:22   was let's let's say I was balancing [TS]

00:04:24   Bastion adjacent oh sure [TS]

00:04:26   and really what happens yeah yeah so I [TS]

00:04:30   was I was you know I was feeling that I [TS]

00:04:33   was feeling that their songs there's [TS]

00:04:35   something they do a thing that i love [TS]

00:04:36   you know me you know I love a mid-tempo [TS]

00:04:38   power pop song do i do know that we're [TS]

00:04:41   if you do it too much above it [TS]

00:04:43   boat becomes not becomes like a cheap [TS]

00:04:44   trick song well some future cases too [TS]

00:04:46   but like one reason i love a good [TS]

00:04:48   teenage fanclub song it's like a [TS]

00:04:49   mid-tempo song that's exactly what I was [TS]

00:04:51   about to say teenage fanclub yeah you [TS]

00:04:53   take something like everything flows or [TS]

00:04:55   using a good [TS]

00:04:56   mid-tempo pop so if everything's flows [TS]

00:04:58   were any faster it would not be my [TS]

00:05:00   favorite song first favorite song the [TS]

00:05:01   nineties now with on special needs of [TS]

00:05:03   the different where they're like they've [TS]

00:05:05   got this kind of like propulsive it's [TS]

00:05:07   really it's like downbeat Arthur Lee's [TS]

00:05:09   love in some ways but there for the [TS]

00:05:11   they're like that some if you're feeling [TS]

00:05:13   sinister it's basically alone again or [TS]

00:05:14   you know [TS]

00:05:15   wow you are dropping some pop music [TS]

00:05:18   vocabulary guess you much got it i [TS]

00:05:21   cannot keep up with it all you know you [TS]

00:05:23   have mentioned 42 pop culture references [TS]

00:05:26   and it all has just sound like made-up [TS]

00:05:29   word yeah yeah the parking lot line that [TS]

00:05:33   anything like church because the the but [TS]

00:05:37   it was any faster to do it's got the [TS]

00:05:39   other song again alone again [TS]

00:05:40   why don't i don't know anything that [TS]

00:05:42   you're saying local we're talking really [TS]

00:05:47   just selling word salad yeah I'm sure [TS]

00:05:50   that I'm sure that i was in some places [TS]

00:05:51   where these musics were happening but i [TS]

00:05:53   do not remember them by name heard the [TS]

00:05:55   bad love [TS]

00:05:57   I'm course ok when they do that they're [TS]

00:05:58   famous song their famous song which I [TS]

00:06:01   which I think the thing to the drunk [TS]

00:06:04   dunk but you're right look like the song [TS]

00:06:06   dump to dump your everything that song [TS]

00:06:09   in reference to another song that I [TS]

00:06:11   think it's that what this is it's like [TS]

00:06:13   songs i don't know all the way I lilypad [TS]

00:06:15   a little hard there [TS]

00:06:16   yes yes okay never mind it's not [TS]

00:06:18   important [TS]

00:06:20   no we came out of the gate and you're [TS]

00:06:21   like well music episode and I was like [TS]

00:06:24   well it was like you were waving a dildo [TS]

00:06:27   in my face and I was like again again [TS]

00:06:31   again i can't pin this music episode [TS]

00:06:33   it's only three minutes long and i'm [TS]

00:06:37   already just like wow talk about upland [TS]

00:06:40   they're funny and literate now see I'm [TS]

00:06:42   gonna guess that that's a band Sean [TS]

00:06:44   light that seems like a very Sean kind [TS]

00:06:47   of band [TS]

00:06:47   well the little Sebastian not overly [TS]

00:06:50   love early to you the early two [TS]

00:06:52   thousands there was a lot going on [TS]

00:06:55   that it wasn't it wasn't over my head or [TS]

00:06:59   above my pay grade it was just that I [TS]

00:07:03   was there was a moment where I suddenly [TS]

00:07:07   felt behind the curve and everything got [TS]

00:07:11   way softer and prettier but the soft [TS]

00:07:17   prettiness wasn't it didn't convey like [TS]

00:07:19   either softness or prettiest it was like [TS]

00:07:22   a prettiest it was aggressively quiet [TS]

00:07:24   and aggressively soft and pretty i felt [TS]

00:07:27   i didn't know where I didn't know where [TS]

00:07:29   to go with that that's me and and and [TS]

00:07:31   what they called post-rock I've never [TS]

00:07:33   understood post-rock and I tried because [TS]

00:07:37   I really felt like that was the Jazz of [TS]

00:07:40   the late nineties post-rock was the Jazz [TS]

00:07:42   of the late nineties it's yet post-rock [TS]

00:07:44   is gonna make indie-rock look like [TS]

00:07:47   college rock that ya know post-rock I [TS]

00:07:54   didn't get I like I mean like I tried to [TS]

00:07:56   tortoise I tried the the carb and [TS]

00:07:58   whether it was the other band that but [TS]

00:08:00   they're all those bands it was just a [TS]

00:08:02   bunch of I don't know it's like a like [TS]

00:08:04   vibes vibes and brush drums and like [TS]

00:08:07   motor voices I mean you're describing [TS]

00:08:09   American analog set except minus the the [TS]

00:08:12   motor noises who American analog set [TS]

00:08:14   from that actually the vibes player for [TS]

00:08:17   American analog that plays the vibes on [TS]

00:08:20   the long winters album for the long [TS]

00:08:23   winter song Nora Nora bing-bong [TS]

00:08:27   bing-bong bing-bong said vibes bond [TS]

00:08:31   minds hard to play because you get the [TS]

00:08:33   you get to mallets in each hand and [TS]

00:08:35   you're playing octaves mostly right up [TS]

00:08:37   no no I don't think you're playing [TS]

00:08:40   different intervals yes now let's in [TS]

00:08:42   each hand [TS]

00:08:42   yes because there's it on hammers or [TS]

00:08:44   malice where they call it uh i think [TS]

00:08:47   they call them bombers hungers it would [TS]

00:08:50   be at this woman was active i thought it [TS]

00:08:52   was like a mac from superchunk kind of [TS]

00:08:54   uh no I think you can do octaves but you [TS]

00:08:56   can it's like playing the piano vibe is [TS]

00:08:58   set up like a period between your [TS]

00:08:59   fingers that must be so hard to do [TS]

00:09:01   well it is hard to do this is the thing [TS]

00:09:05   about being good at a musical instrument [TS]

00:09:07   it's almost universally hard to do and [TS]

00:09:11   no matter what 20 pick and you just pick [TS]

00:09:13   one and go for you so why there's a [TS]

00:09:15   woman here in Seattle an errand [TS]

00:09:17   Jorgensen and she is a very small human [TS]

00:09:21   right like she's small in stature and [TS]

00:09:24   also small in in all dimensions little [TS]

00:09:27   redheaded she's cool look at girls yeah [TS]

00:09:30   and she has this is just very short hair [TS]

00:09:33   and very tattoo very good tattoos and [TS]

00:09:34   she plays the vibes spectacularly and [TS]

00:09:39   she schleps her i'm saying a lot of [TS]

00:09:41   words that are hard to say and it's [TS]

00:09:43   early in the morning for me [TS]

00:09:45   spectacularly sheesh LEP's her vibes [TS]

00:09:49   which are a gigantic thing she slaps him [TS]

00:09:53   all over town and she's one of those [TS]

00:09:55   musicians that will play a show with [TS]

00:09:57   somebody and then slipper vibes over and [TS]

00:09:59   play another show and she had like must [TS]

00:10:02   take such commitment it's it's but she's [TS]

00:10:05   spectacular and she has marimbas which [TS]

00:10:08   are vibes let me so I'm going to just [TS]

00:10:11   throw this out there i don't i don't [TS]

00:10:12   know what I'm actually saying but I [TS]

00:10:14   think their Bibles made out of wood [TS]

00:10:16   mhm marimba you get what you get [TS]

00:10:19   glockenspiel you got the xylophone you [TS]

00:10:21   get the marimba and you can you get the [TS]

00:10:24   vibes the minimize the finals pipes I [TS]

00:10:26   think Lou ending points of vibes have [TS]

00:10:31   actually an electrical component which [TS]

00:10:32   is something that is spinning underneath [TS]

00:10:36   likely yeah you can turn on and off and [TS]

00:10:40   it's it as the sound travels down the [TS]

00:10:43   pipe this little spinning flap will make [TS]

00:10:47   it go what will that Leslie speak [TS]

00:10:51   exactly it's a lesson that ass [TS]

00:10:53   it's a but it's an analog Leslie so that [TS]

00:10:55   it's not going to look at all right foot [TS]

00:10:57   pedal for that II yeah [TS]

00:10:59   at one point in the nineteen eighties my [TS]

00:11:03   dad who had always been a huge fan of [TS]

00:11:05   Lionel Hampton uh huh dad decided that [TS]

00:11:09   his new instrument was going to be [TS]

00:11:11   divides [TS]

00:11:12   now little bit about like quite a [TS]

00:11:16   commitment a little bit of backstory he [TS]

00:11:18   had no prior instrument who so he [TS]

00:11:22   decided it was going to be his new [TS]

00:11:23   instrument absent a former instrument [TS]

00:11:26   and he was what 17 de 70 let's say 70 [TS]

00:11:33   and maybe 6 66 67 let's say that he's [TS]

00:11:40   like I'm gonna get some vibes [TS]

00:11:42   this was before he talked like this it [TS]

00:11:43   was when he talked like this but it's [TS]

00:11:46   and I'm gonna get some vibes I was like [TS]

00:11:48   eyes much i'm not sure where we're going [TS]

00:11:52   to put him dad and where he put them was [TS]

00:11:56   in the TV watching room behind the TV [TS]

00:11:59   watching couch I think imagining that he [TS]

00:12:03   was going to play the vibes while [TS]

00:12:05   watching the TV and so there's the face [TS]

00:12:10   of it makes so much sense [TS]

00:12:11   that's right there you can watching what [TS]

00:12:14   your stories are looking at prices right [TS]

00:12:15   that's right and just a little Hampton [TS]

00:12:17   he only watch TV at night so there were [TS]

00:12:19   no stories there was no price of right [TS]

00:12:21   it was always you can watch magnum I I [TS]

00:12:25   don't think you watch magnum but he did [TS]

00:12:26   he did was watch he liked to watch war [TS]

00:12:31   movies right he liked you like to watch [TS]

00:12:33   old classic movies so all of a sudden [TS]

00:12:38   behind the couch appeared this enormous [TS]

00:12:40   shiny set of viber phones which he never [TS]

00:12:48   again touched the treadmill he touched [TS]

00:12:51   them to bring them in the house huh [TS]

00:12:53   never touch them again so of course i [TS]

00:12:56   would sit there and play the vibes [TS]

00:12:59   Wow to everyone's a massive annoyance [TS]

00:13:05   and I would sit and you know like I have [TS]

00:13:08   like I've always done with every [TS]

00:13:09   instrument i refused any instruction or [TS]

00:13:13   any information about them and just sat [TS]

00:13:16   at them and made my own clink clink boom [TS]

00:13:20   boom well because they're because it had [TS]

00:13:22   this electricity and they were you know [TS]

00:13:24   they were fairly loud around [TS]

00:13:26   think about that one moment can get out [TS]

00:13:28   oh well boo boo and so I would play [TS]

00:13:32   these things i never got the two mallets [TS]

00:13:34   per hand business at all i just i just [TS]

00:13:37   had one mallapur hand and but i would do [TS]

00:13:40   the I would do the rapid like doing [TS]

00:13:42   really kind of stuff with the [TS]

00:13:46   fast-moving balance and boy did I have a [TS]

00:13:48   time I had as much i had so much of a [TS]

00:13:51   time that then briefly this was the best [TS]

00:13:56   the best part of this and I had [TS]

00:13:57   completely forgotten until now my dad [TS]

00:14:00   said you know what i should do since I [TS]

00:14:02   never play the vibes but you're getting [TS]

00:14:04   pretty good at it [TS]

00:14:06   I've always been intrigued by the steel [TS]

00:14:08   drum and there was brief moment where he [TS]

00:14:14   was me like the thing that the guys play [TS]

00:14:16   like a beach bar [TS]

00:14:18   yeah that's right the tunes the like [TS]

00:14:20   it's like a 55-gallon drum that's been [TS]

00:14:22   tuned [TS]

00:14:22   it's been tuned hammered that face has [TS]

00:14:24   been hammered in such a way that it can [TS]

00:14:26   play multiple notes and must be quite a [TS]

00:14:30   conversation [TS]

00:14:31   well the thing is there was there was [TS]

00:14:33   briefly a moment where I was super [TS]

00:14:35   excited that i was going to get a set of [TS]

00:14:38   steel drums behind the couch because [TS]

00:14:40   short of the bagpipes [TS]

00:14:43   there's only one instrument I mean that [TS]

00:14:46   is the instrument that if you don't know [TS]

00:14:47   how to play it [TS]

00:14:48   you cannot imagine how and look at their [TS]

00:14:50   I put violin up there [TS]

00:14:52   oh yeah I mean maybe maybe French horn [TS]

00:14:55   there certainly are now you don't want [TS]

00:14:56   to listen to something certain [TS]

00:14:57   instrument you don't want to listen to [TS]

00:14:59   somebody learn to play no more years the [TS]

00:15:02   more here mentioned that I think that [TS]

00:15:03   also is true of every instrument [TS]

00:15:05   ok that's number two that's good right [TS]

00:15:07   but so oh my god the the potential of [TS]

00:15:10   the bombs because ladies right i mean [TS]

00:15:13   there was a lot of a lot of reggae music [TS]

00:15:16   reggae music man i love kokomo that's [TS]

00:15:19   right Joseph RI and so ready music was [TS]

00:15:23   happening in a big way regular rock [TS]

00:15:25   music reggae rock music Richard average [TS]

00:15:28   rock reggae roots rock reggae and the [TS]

00:15:30   idea that maybe I could find it [TS]

00:15:34   give you and your father have a rake you [TS]

00:15:36   know like I was not get into that scene [TS]

00:15:38   through the back door by being the one [TS]

00:15:40   guy that could put one white guy sharing [TS]

00:15:42   the John around always hated me look do [TS]

00:15:48   so yeah some roto toms me but then he [TS]

00:15:53   abandoned the steel drums idea and then [TS]

00:15:56   it was never spoken of again and i think [TS]

00:15:59   it was i think he abandoned it because [TS]

00:16:00   you couldn't find steel drums in Alaska [TS]

00:16:03   without considerable work more work than [TS]

00:16:05   he was prepared to do and then one day [TS]

00:16:08   gave the vibes I think to my niece or [TS]

00:16:12   sometimes just disappeared one day and [TS]

00:16:15   that's no small feat because they you [TS]

00:16:17   know they weighed as much as a honda [TS]

00:16:19   civic but uh yeah the that when we have [TS]

00:16:23   a long history and I think dad realized [TS]

00:16:25   at that point that what he needed to do [TS]

00:16:27   with it to satisfy to scratch that edge [TS]

00:16:29   what he needed to do was just listen to [TS]

00:16:32   Lionel Hampton tapes which wouldn't like [TS]

00:16:35   things like what I think like modern [TS]

00:16:37   jazz quartet modern jazz quartet just so [TS]

00:16:40   so gorgeous also modern jazz quartet was [TS]

00:16:42   one of my favorite indie rock bands of [TS]

00:16:45   the late nineties that's right they [TS]

00:16:46   didn't realize then Christmas too late i [TS]

00:16:48   like the brownout and changing its [TS]

00:16:49   chicken bones intervention [TS]

00:16:51   not as much as the grey album what sort [TS]

00:16:53   of a right yeah sort of like Jimmy's [TS]

00:16:56   Chicken Shack was the was the like [TS]

00:16:59   Alabama version of oh yeah right like [TS]

00:17:03   Martin's first wheel which was hard with [TS]

00:17:07   first wheel on you probably know them i [TS]

00:17:09   had their EP yeah i know is it is a [TS]

00:17:12   pretty right onto a shirt i never knew [TS]

00:17:13   Martin no thank you i knew his first [TS]

00:17:15   wheel pretty no I think Martin that was [TS]

00:17:17   never actually in the band I mean that's [TS]

00:17:19   one of those funny things it's like an [TS]

00:17:20   atomic dustbin always your next [TS]

00:17:22   destination in the band was was next [TS]

00:17:25   atomic dustbin and an emo band and [TS]

00:17:27   here's everything I know about Ned [TS]

00:17:29   atomic dustbin numbered ready go [TS]

00:17:31   okay number two I would always turn it [TS]

00:17:33   off when they came on a hundred twenty [TS]

00:17:35   minutes [TS]

00:17:35   number one I remember dave kendall [TS]

00:17:37   saying names atomic testing and that [TS]

00:17:40   would be my single move number two in [TS]

00:17:41   turn off that works forward fast forward [TS]

00:17:43   fast forward a non-uniform in order [TS]

00:17:46   when our dorm in our house the three of [TS]

00:17:47   us would wake every Sunday know every [TS]

00:17:49   monday i guess after got back from class [TS]

00:17:51   we watch hundred twenty minutes which we [TS]

00:17:52   take the night before and there were [TS]

00:17:55   rules now a man who is Nigel dormer [TS]

00:17:58   Nigel dormer invented the window qua [TS]

00:18:02   niger dormer did Sherlock natural dormer [TS]

00:18:05   don't have my own Idol door the one from [TS]

00:18:07   Cambridge Nigel dormer invented the [TS]

00:18:09   dormer that's why it's called the door [TS]

00:18:11   that's right and John cropper invented [TS]

00:18:13   da floor and so Michael and and I would [TS]

00:18:18   we get home from classes on Monday we [TS]

00:18:20   get back to our house and 120 minutes [TS]

00:18:21   but the rules this is not nam this is [TS]

00:18:23   this is bowling there are rules [TS]

00:18:25   what are the rules of 120 minutes are [TS]

00:18:28   there are certain things you can and [TS]

00:18:30   must fast forward over and other things [TS]

00:18:32   you don't cuz part of this 100 you taped [TS]

00:18:35   it on VHS [TS]

00:18:35   it's the only way to fly ice you can [TS]

00:18:38   never go back this is this is 1989 and [TS]

00:18:42   it was a show pretty good [TS]

00:18:45   oh yeah I was good then it would mean [TS]

00:18:46   the light it didn't hurt that there was [TS]

00:18:48   just so much good music there is great [TS]

00:18:50   news because when you said that we're [TS]

00:18:51   talking about like the quiet man i'm [TS]

00:18:52   just thinking about is in my head this [TS]

00:18:54   is a slight derail but I'm thinking in [TS]

00:18:56   my head I wonder if it was just the late [TS]

00:18:58   eighties and the late nineties there was [TS]

00:19:00   I felt there was such an explosion of [TS]

00:19:02   music felt like it was for me [TS]

00:19:04   so you're saying it might have something [TS]

00:19:05   to do with the lates could be the late [TS]

00:19:07   but could also be just like what I'm [TS]

00:19:09   ready for what I'm into [TS]

00:19:10   what's available oh wait a minute let's [TS]

00:19:12   walk let's trace this for a second late [TS]

00:19:14   sixties you know seventies awesome [TS]

00:19:17   wait a minute it's the late oh this is [TS]

00:19:19   your time to put it out put away the [TS]

00:19:21   record no you should put out your next [TS]

00:19:23   record that's okay [TS]

00:19:25   and I think in 2018 that's when you drop [TS]

00:19:29   the bangor so you put out something in [TS]

00:19:31   in this in the 16 that's like it kind of [TS]

00:19:35   procedures your means lying EP this is [TS]

00:19:38   where you like put out the EP that gets [TS]

00:19:39   people excited it was officially oh so [TS]

00:19:41   much [TS]

00:19:42   ok and what was the EP that my bloody [TS]

00:19:45   valentine put out before four lovely for [TS]

00:19:48   the good one Billy head is anything was [TS]

00:19:50   one thing is anything i think was the [TS]

00:19:52   record before that oh no the one with [TS]

00:19:53   tom is it not when you sleep but they [TS]

00:19:55   have the one glider i'm edmund glider [TS]

00:19:59   the lighter EP mmm i mean is anything is [TS]

00:20:02   still like you can just listen is [TS]

00:20:03   anything go holy shit like this holy [TS]

00:20:05   this is head and shoulders above most i [TS]

00:20:09   mean i like i like a fair amount of [TS]

00:20:11   shoegaze but like I mean obviously [TS]

00:20:12   levels is on a different level [TS]

00:20:14   sure totally different level hmph that's [TS]

00:20:16   what--that's 91 [TS]

00:20:18   yeah well yeah okay i might not have a [TS]

00:20:21   point here but i was gonna say was we [TS]

00:20:23   watching 20 minutes I don't know why I'm [TS]

00:20:24   telling you this right 27 is my laundry [TS]

00:20:26   number Hartley's quickly do seven is [TS]

00:20:33   something now I don't want to derail [TS]

00:20:35   this [TS]

00:20:35   no shit i'm looking back to my note [TS]

00:20:37   cards here into that 207 so the area [TS]

00:20:42   code of seattle is 206 huh [TS]

00:20:44   the last week's episode and 207 is a [TS]

00:20:49   number area code that periodically comes [TS]

00:20:51   up on my phone when somebody is phone [TS]

00:20:53   spamming no interesting i could not tell [TS]

00:20:56   you what that area code is it's just [TS]

00:20:58   close enough to 206 as you can imagine [TS]

00:21:01   with one away main but its main and I'm [TS]

00:21:05   periodically fooled [TS]

00:21:06   oh yeah to at least two almost answer [TS]

00:21:11   you know you know it's you know it's [TS]

00:21:13   spam [TS]

00:21:14   you know that as soon as i said as soon [TS]

00:21:16   as I realize what it is I'm like ah good [TS]

00:21:18   my daughter Noelle though that's right i [TS]

00:21:20   pick it up and I'm like did my daughter [TS]

00:21:22   go to me and she had a well to follow [TS]

00:21:25   you Lassie wrote what what the coffee's [TS]

00:21:29   done brewing 207 so the rule was you [TS]

00:21:34   could skip past you could we usually [TS]

00:21:36   watch the beginning because they say [TS]

00:21:38   like the guests are going to be and [TS]

00:21:39   stuff like that [TS]

00:21:40   I thought that the hundred twenty [TS]

00:21:41   minutes had the had the kid with the the [TS]

00:21:44   mullet that's about his name was like [TS]

00:21:45   Frankie or something or we first had [TS]

00:21:47   Kevin seals then you had David Kendall [TS]

00:21:51   and it later yet Matt pin field i want [TS]

00:21:53   to say that i ever tell you that I was [TS]

00:21:55   in a play with Kevin Steele I said Kevin [TS]

00:21:58   sealing the idea to torch song trilogy [TS]

00:21:59   em what place were you in [TS]

00:22:02   I don't remember it was a play some play [TS]

00:22:05   some alternative nation play back in the [TS]

00:22:08   day where there was like some fire [TS]

00:22:09   breathing and [TS]

00:22:10   there's a funicular in the play my [TS]

00:22:14   goodness it was a musical and I played [TS]

00:22:17   the harmonica at one point I think I [TS]

00:22:20   might have been i did quite a few plays [TS]

00:22:22   in the nineties where i was i was kind [TS]

00:22:25   of the guy in Seattle that you would [TS]

00:22:26   stunt cast how nice [TS]

00:22:28   like all the guy from the long were no I [TS]

00:22:30   wasn't in the long winters then the guy [TS]

00:22:31   from you know is I was just a hanger-on [TS]

00:22:33   and they would put me and put me in [TS]

00:22:36   roles where I kind of would walk on play [TS]

00:22:38   a character named tiny yeah i was at one [TS]

00:22:41   point I was cool hand luke [TS]

00:22:43   oh man early yeah where you why it's [TS]

00:22:46   like here comes cool handling with a [TS]

00:22:47   special lucker your dragline I was you [TS]

00:22:51   lose the guy who hate 850 eggs I was the [TS]

00:22:54   guy that could that well yeah you can't [TS]

00:22:56   know a mechanic 50 eggs but I came out [TS]

00:22:59   and was cool and looking for a while but [TS]

00:23:00   in this in this play I play the [TS]

00:23:03   harmonica and my maybe sing a song about [TS]

00:23:06   a funicular particular niculae funicula [TS]

00:23:11   that's funny 23 people [TS]

00:23:13   ah feels cozy was in seattle at the time [TS]

00:23:18   doing some Romans who are here go to [TS]

00:23:20   their house [TS]

00:23:21   mm no conjugate that oh so ridiculous [TS]

00:23:26   finicky loss finicky latest manipulator [TS]

00:23:29   NICU LA so don't know us [TS]

00:23:34   don't do it i'm lost Kevin seal was in [TS]

00:23:38   the play and Kevin Steele we've talked [TS]

00:23:40   about him before him we I think we did [TS]

00:23:42   Kevin Steele was such a hero to me [TS]

00:23:45   really he was perpetually stony he was [TS]

00:23:47   very stony his his his sense of humor [TS]

00:23:51   was so great he was the first person [TS]

00:23:54   that appeared on television that I was [TS]

00:23:57   like oh my god that guy would be my [TS]

00:23:59   friend [TS]

00:24:00   oh my god i just special Hodgson like he [TS]

00:24:02   comes along you're like who is this guy [TS]

00:24:04   there's no be on TV like this person [TS]

00:24:06   isn't and I was so thrilled by him if he [TS]

00:24:09   was on TV I would drop everything and [TS]

00:24:11   just watching because he was such a he [TS]

00:24:14   just seemed like such a such a friend [TS]

00:24:17   and I never had that experience before [TS]

00:24:19   that and i had had never had that [TS]

00:24:21   experience since then and I didn't want [TS]

00:24:24   him to do anything else right I didn't [TS]

00:24:26   want him to go into film I didn't want [TS]

00:24:28   him to I just wanted him to stay on MTV [TS]

00:24:31   and continue to play where the kids in [TS]

00:24:34   America and have funny things to say [TS]

00:24:36   about it [TS]

00:24:37   i I didn't want him to to idea i never i [TS]

00:24:41   think I never wanted anything about that [TS]

00:27:21   he wasn't that all that's sickening and [TS]

00:27:24   he's like he had a wife and kids he [TS]

00:27:26   moved to seattle he's still super nice [TS]

00:27:29   he's exactly like he's exactly in person [TS]

00:27:32   like you was on TV that's so nice to [TS]

00:27:34   hear ya but he wasn't on TV you know now [TS]

00:27:38   a lot of those people that were on TV in [TS]

00:27:39   the nineties they continue to have [TS]

00:27:42   careers is like comedians or people you [TS]

00:27:45   know what I mean like Michael Ian Black [TS]

00:27:47   was on TV in the nineties but now he [TS]

00:27:51   continues to just sort of be a his [TS]

00:27:54   character in the world [TS]

00:27:55   yeah right and kevin steele didn't I [TS]

00:27:59   don't think make that transition he's [TS]

00:28:00   like so he's a stay-at-home dad stayed [TS]

00:28:03   home today I'm ready right now in the [TS]

00:28:04   wikipedia a yeah he was there with his [TS]

00:28:06   wife he does voiceover work as a [TS]

00:28:07   stay-at-home dad to his son can you [TS]

00:28:09   imagine isn't nice [TS]

00:28:11   I mean you're almost a stay-at-home dad [TS]

00:28:12   well I don't really work generally I [TS]

00:28:15   think you're nine one-hundredths and the [TS]

00:28:18   Florida and add all the you know you [TS]

00:28:22   deep and the rule was that it was a song [TS]

00:28:26   we had not heard even if it was [TS]

00:28:28   something that we were not into even if [TS]

00:28:30   it was negative Macduff spin you had to [TS]

00:28:32   listen you had this day and with its [TS]

00:28:35   regular I got they have it [TS]

00:28:36   you have to listen through through the [TS]

00:28:39   first chorus so you basically to listen [TS]

00:28:41   to a verse or two and the chorus and [TS]

00:28:42   then bye-bye consent the three of us [TS]

00:28:45   will vote on whether to listen to the [TS]

00:28:46   rest of the song and it's almost always [TS]

00:28:47   like to skip it [TS]

00:28:49   I that was was this yet the era of the [TS]

00:28:52   super long intro or did that come in the [TS]

00:28:55   early night that feels a little more [TS]

00:28:56   like a nineties thing this is this is to [TS]

00:28:58   me the heyday of MTV this is when I mean [TS]

00:29:01   I don't know this day I mean obviously [TS]

00:29:03   there's the like totally just a [TS]

00:29:05   coincidence that you were 19 [TS]

00:29:07   well that the one MTV's came along it [TS]

00:29:09   was you it was for hobbyists you had to [TS]

00:29:12   really sit there and wait for video you [TS]

00:29:14   like to come on cuz they have like 200 [TS]

00:29:15   videos period [TS]

00:29:16   yeah and you know they all seem to be [TS]

00:29:19   the motels only the lonely [TS]

00:29:20   well I ran you know they were the same [TS]

00:29:23   videos you see overall Oliver's army the [TS]

00:29:25   same videos you see over and over and [TS]

00:29:27   over what was the band from New Zealand [TS]

00:29:28   that was fronted by the brother of the [TS]

00:29:31   young kid that ended up being the [TS]

00:29:33   crowded house guy a split it split ends [TS]

00:29:37   I would wait for hours for every day [TS]

00:29:40   there's no weird [TS]

00:29:41   yeah that that they were one of the ones [TS]

00:29:43   that were they were not in heavy [TS]

00:29:45   rotation [TS]

00:29:45   yeah yeah but buoyed by the time of [TS]

00:29:47   split ends video would come along I will [TS]

00:29:49   yeah i would have seen Iran like six [TS]

00:29:50   times [TS]

00:29:51   yeah but you would see so like split sec [TS]

00:29:52   I got you you see six months in a leaky [TS]

00:29:54   boat i cannot you two don't go don't but [TS]

00:29:58   don't but don't but I their own the [TS]

00:30:00   painting in the background i love the [TS]

00:30:02   video 29 MTV was absolutely a thing a by [TS]

00:30:06   85 MTV of the thing [TS]

00:30:08   oh but they were still showing videos [TS]

00:30:10   they had good like shows about music [TS]

00:30:12   videos they had headbangers ball they [TS]

00:30:14   had no that's the one with Ricky Frankie [TS]

00:30:17   Ricky Jay Riecke savage not Ricky van on [TS]

00:30:20   Ricky J he's the one making lights click [TS]

00:30:23   with these cards gonna go take care of [TS]

00:30:25   these guards your card is a Jaguar key [TS]

00:30:30   rocket Rikki Rockett that's it was that [TS]

00:30:32   right my god i'm guessing and then you [TS]

00:30:34   also have but you also had my favorite [TS]

00:30:37   young TV wraps which Islam amazing so [TS]

00:30:40   I'm gonna call 999 the banner year for [TS]

00:30:42   MTV although I have to say fab 5 freddy [TS]

00:30:47   did not have a lot of telegenic [TS]

00:30:50   no he didn't yeah that's he's a [TS]

00:30:53   legendary character of fab 5 freddy what [TS]

00:30:56   we see the fab 5 freddy up blondie song [TS]

00:30:59   no that's bad press where customers also [TS]

00:31:01   there's another then it was hosted by a [TS]

00:31:03   bad lover and dr. Dre except it's a [TS]

00:31:05   different doctor Dre Dr Dre Dre but the [TS]

00:31:08   thing is I think there are a lot of dr. [TS]

00:31:10   dre's doctor because because dr. [TS]

00:31:12   straight thank you [TS]

00:31:13   because Dre is short for greatness [TS]

00:31:16   that's not true and that's a very very [TS]

00:31:21   popular in a everything American [TS]

00:31:23   community a lot of a lot of them when [TS]

00:31:25   they came to Ellis Island the changes [TS]

00:31:26   they don't sound Jewish you know to the [TS]

00:31:27   king of the Dreyfus wits it's not [TS]

00:31:29   driving anymore straightness so that's [TS]

00:31:32   what dr. dre sure [TS]

00:31:33   ok and a lot of people you know we're [TS]

00:31:36   like I'm I'm not a doctor of the rocker [TS]

00:31:38   further i'm not a real doctor but I am a [TS]

00:31:40   real dre exactly so dr. dre's popular [TS]

00:31:43   but how are you going to have a second [TS]

00:31:45   fab 5 freddy no way there's no way [TS]

00:31:49   somebody else could be like I'm also fat [TS]

00:31:51   by pretty see no magnetic field was [TS]

00:31:54   doing it I think in the nineties when i [TS]

00:31:56   was still taping it when i moved to [TS]

00:31:57   Tallahassee I always liked how [TS]

00:32:00   interested he seemed in the music but he [TS]

00:32:03   didn't have the kind of like glitzy [TS]

00:32:05   showbiz feeling like they can't restrain [TS]

00:32:07   me a little bit crazy there's a tumblr [TS]

00:32:08   that's just just what dave kendall was [TS]

00:32:10   wearing on a hundred twenty minutes [TS]

00:32:12   tremendous and i also want to share [TS]

00:32:15   something that I don't know if I talked [TS]

00:32:17   about much but reminds me of your vibe [TS]

00:32:20   story em some reason i think in 1980 my [TS]

00:32:25   mom who had taking piano lessons as a [TS]

00:32:27   kid she could still like you know she'd [TS]

00:32:29   sit down to play some piano she's not [TS]

00:32:30   all I'd like to get one of those you [TS]

00:32:32   know or organ like a series organ ya [TS]

00:32:34   yeah would ya yeah and so much gee I [TS]

00:32:39   don't know if she bought it or was [TS]

00:32:40   gifted it but she had that was a very [TS]

00:32:42   cheap serious issue organ at our house [TS]

00:32:45   had the two keyboards and it had the [TS]

00:32:48   drums and had a Foxtrot got a little [TS]

00:32:50   button keyboard that played this is the [TS]

00:32:53   key [TS]

00:32:53   this is the key is it had the buttons so [TS]

00:32:56   we got this and she's actually played [TS]

00:32:57   very much but it came with an organ [TS]

00:32:59   electric organ with a bench in the bench [TS]

00:33:01   had some [TS]

00:33:03   books and books and books in it in it [TS]

00:33:05   including like it's basically she didn't [TS]

00:33:08   do it much but I had absolutely nothing [TS]

00:33:10   to do to fill my time this in the hall [TS]

00:33:12   and oates sarah and i would just sit [TS]

00:33:13   down and try to play songs from the [TS]

00:33:16   fiddler on the roof book but it's also i [TS]

00:33:18   would write little songs using the [TS]

00:33:20   buttons because you need to know how to [TS]

00:33:21   play an E minor use need to know what [TS]

00:33:23   button hit and I learned stuff like GE [TS]

00:33:25   minor CD i love ya GA minor like that's [TS]

00:33:29   but this is 23 years before had a guitar [TS]

00:33:32   that's when I don't never i never really [TS]

00:33:34   think about this but we had a book of [TS]

00:33:36   like spiritual a reader's digest [TS]

00:33:37   religious music book we had like a you [TS]

00:33:41   know American classic songs and I would [TS]

00:33:43   just sit and that play terribly on this [TS]

00:33:47   organ and then turn the turn the [TS]

00:33:49   rock-and-roll beat up really fast that's [TS]

00:33:51   our kind of punk rock so it turns out [TS]

00:33:53   that's that's basically how i learned [TS]

00:33:55   I've been through accordion lessons I [TS]

00:33:56   think the trombone lessons I've been [TS]

00:33:58   through so many different things [TS]

00:33:59   meridian lesson oh yeah oh that's right [TS]

00:34:02   you're from Ohio that's right that's [TS]

00:34:03   right none of it stuck I hated it all [TS]

00:34:05   it wasn't until I was on my own with the [TS]

00:34:07   organ that I would sit there and and [TS]

00:34:10   beat out some some little tense [TS]

00:34:12   mhm we have the same organ and my mom [TS]

00:34:15   bought it for the same reason he turned [TS]

00:34:17   it on it sounded like when ya examining [TS]

00:34:20   the fan wound up [TS]

00:34:22   yeah but uh my game on it was every once [TS]

00:34:27   in awhile and and not and not [TS]

00:34:28   infrequently i would go in turn the [TS]

00:34:31   organ on the fan would come up i would [TS]

00:34:33   turn on the marimba beat but but [TS]

00:34:38   whatever some you know i would i would [TS]

00:34:40   set the tempo mid-tempo because that's [TS]

00:34:42   the greatest greatest tempo yes and then [TS]

00:34:44   i would start at the top of the of the [TS]

00:34:47   button series and I would play i would i [TS]

00:34:53   would just go down the row i would play [TS]

00:34:56   each I would push each button for like [TS]

00:34:59   16 bars while on the piano [TS]

00:35:03   I would play some like little two or [TS]

00:35:08   three note melody [TS]

00:35:09   uh-huh and then I would change to the [TS]

00:35:12   next button [TS]

00:35:13   and do the same thing and I would go all [TS]

00:35:16   the way through three rows of buttons [TS]

00:35:19   with each each row had 18 was looking to [TS]

00:35:24   see what fit [TS]

00:35:26   no I was just playing a song well that [TS]

00:35:28   was every chord and playing this little [TS]

00:35:32   sort of and the melody would change [TS]

00:35:34   depending on what court i went to and [TS]

00:35:37   and it was it would change just by one [TS]

00:35:39   note generally because you would hear [TS]

00:35:41   like oh that note doesn't fit anymore [TS]

00:35:43   now I have to play that note play this [TS]

00:35:45   little thing and it had playing the [TS]

00:35:47   entire song probably took 15 minutes [TS]

00:35:49   because i had to make it you know i did [TS]

00:35:52   I gave every poor girl it's almost like [TS]

00:35:54   like like exercise like running a [TS]

00:35:55   circuit [TS]

00:35:56   yeah right every court I would give i [TS]

00:35:58   would give 16 bars and I would just find [TS]

00:36:01   in the in the little three year you know [TS]

00:36:03   three notes boo did too did titude I [TS]

00:36:07   would find the little melody [TS]

00:36:10   Wow and just will work my way all the [TS]

00:36:12   way through and my sister would hear me [TS]

00:36:14   doing it and come in and dance and this [TS]

00:36:18   was like a thing and then i would get to [TS]

00:36:19   the end and I would turn off the organ [TS]

00:36:22   and I would be done [TS]

00:36:24   sometimes if Susan was really dancing [TS]

00:36:26   and I was really having a jam in time I [TS]

00:36:28   would start over at the top again and i [TS]

00:36:30   would work my way back through the [TS]

00:36:32   buttons [TS]

00:36:33   isn't that amazing yeah and it was I [TS]

00:36:35   don't know what I was learning i was [TS]

00:36:36   just learning some kind of like here's [TS]

00:36:38   how little melodies change when you move [TS]

00:36:40   from [TS]

00:36:41   I'm not even sure I understood i [TS]

00:36:42   understood what was happening that but [TS]

00:36:45   that was between was part of the fun [TS]

00:36:46   there's nothing about it what extent was [TS]

00:36:48   actually in pic embarrassing what I was [TS]

00:36:49   doing was not anything that I would ever [TS]

00:36:51   do in front of people because it was so [TS]

00:36:54   dorky but I mean you know I don't again [TS]

00:36:57   this is one of those like this should be [TS]

00:36:58   in my bio pic but like that's one of [TS]

00:37:00   those stories were like yeah you know [TS]

00:37:02   that actually was the probably the [TS]

00:37:03   single biggest thing that got me to [TS]

00:37:05   figure out enough about music to fumble [TS]

00:37:06   my way around em like 10 because here's [TS]

00:37:09   the problem i mean we talk so much in [TS]

00:37:10   the past about like learning guitar how [TS]

00:37:12   you and I both like never got that good [TS]

00:37:14   at guitar or but like but eventually you [TS]

00:37:17   power through it to where you know the [TS]

00:37:19   patterns [TS]

00:37:19   yeah to where you know these like you [TS]

00:37:22   know the 1454 wherever you go [TS]

00:37:24   eventually the bar chords but you don't [TS]

00:37:26   figure that eventually [TS]

00:37:27   the first you just have to learn all [TS]

00:37:28   these open chords and then figure out [TS]

00:37:29   how they fit together [TS]

00:37:30   yeah and the thing is I'm not putting [TS]

00:37:32   this well but your your body and your [TS]

00:37:35   brain are not able to process the music [TS]

00:37:38   part of it you're thinking about the [TS]

00:37:39   mechanics of moving your hands around [TS]

00:37:41   and trying to like fret properly and [TS]

00:37:42   keep in tune and all that kind of stuff [TS]

00:37:44   but with the organ with the buttons i [TS]

00:37:46   could just figure out like like pure [TS]

00:37:48   chord changes you know I was make these [TS]

00:37:50   really fruity like psychedelic and blues [TS]

00:37:53   guys sunshine kind of like you know [TS]

00:37:55   chord changes and it delights me but it [TS]

00:37:57   was so dark I would never do that in [TS]

00:37:58   front of somebody [TS]

00:37:59   well that's one of the things about [TS]

00:38:00   having a sibling is that your siblings [TS]

00:38:03   close enough to you that you cannot [TS]

00:38:06   excuse me you cannot avoid doing dorky [TS]

00:38:10   throwing things in it right and so like [TS]

00:38:13   the idea that I would and I mean I'm [TS]

00:38:15   sure they're there arrived at a time [TS]

00:38:18   when I would do my my little organ jam [TS]

00:38:23   and my sister would come into dance and [TS]

00:38:25   I was like get out of here i'm doing my [TS]

00:38:27   own Jam i'm not even sure that ever [TS]

00:38:30   happened I feel like that's one that's [TS]

00:38:32   one thing we're that's nice that's a [TS]

00:38:34   nice tits and I story in a nice image [TS]

00:38:36   yeah it's a little bit of a thing that [TS]

00:38:37   you and your sisters share that no one [TS]

00:38:39   could be embarrassed by because it's [TS]

00:38:41   never occurred to you that that this [TS]

00:38:43   happens outside that this is happening [TS]

00:38:45   outside of your small world right but uh [TS]

00:38:49   but yeah the the guitar still is a [TS]

00:38:53   mystery to me the way all the music [TS]

00:38:57   overlaps itself and interacts with [TS]

00:38:59   itself and i still routinely discover [TS]

00:39:03   something room like oh whoa wait a [TS]

00:39:05   minute that thing is that thing I like [TS]

00:39:09   it'sit's still like occurring to you [TS]

00:39:11   it still happens all the time where i'll [TS]

00:39:13   be out i will have been playing [TS]

00:39:15   something for years and i'll i'll stop [TS]

00:39:19   doing it for a second and try and figure [TS]

00:39:23   out what it is this thing that I've been [TS]

00:39:26   doing for years [TS]

00:39:27   looks like you've been doing it in your [TS]

00:39:28   in your hands [TS]

00:39:30   yeah but you haven't really like like [TS]

00:39:32   logically processed it like I put it on [TS]

00:39:34   a grid or something yeah it's it not [TS]

00:39:35   only in my hands it's in my songs [TS]

00:39:37   it's on my album [TS]

00:39:38   like for a long time I couldn't have [TS]

00:39:42   told you what the actual chords to the [TS]

00:39:46   song stupid were from if you'd asked me [TS]

00:39:49   I would be like I don't know just like [TS]

00:39:52   it sounds like he commands I mean that [TS]

00:39:54   sounds silly but like when i try to [TS]

00:39:55   explain something how to do something [TS]

00:39:56   that I've done on the computer I i have [TS]

00:39:58   to change a completely different mode of [TS]

00:40:00   thinking because I'm so used to just [TS]

00:40:01   doing this thing with my fingers I've [TS]

00:40:03   never verbalized anything about what I'm [TS]

00:40:04   doing and I sound like a complete idiot [TS]

00:40:06   yeah yeah yeah me too like I don't wanna [TS]

00:40:08   play it [TS]

00:40:09   I mean I don't want to tell you how to [TS]

00:40:11   do it somebody asked me on the internet [TS]

00:40:12   the other day I was they were like how [TS]

00:40:14   do you like what's the strum pattern to [TS]

00:40:18   your song it'll be a breeze and I was [TS]

00:40:21   like daughter put the pic in your hand [TS]

00:40:25   and drum before its erratic it's one of [TS]

00:40:27   your erratic sounding songs [TS]

00:40:29   well so I so so my my initial response [TS]

00:40:33   to him was like yeah put a pic in your [TS]

00:40:35   an instrument i don't know what would [TS]

00:40:36   listen to it and strum it like it sounds [TS]

00:40:38   and he wrote back was like okay thanks [TS]

00:40:42   and I kind of walked around for a couple [TS]

00:40:44   days kind of feeling bad like tonight [TS]

00:40:46   that was was I mean I mean I don't [TS]

00:40:49   understand even the question so I [TS]

00:40:50   listened to the song and I was like oh I [TS]

00:40:55   guess I see you know I guess I see what [TS]

00:40:58   you're saying it's you know it's [TS]

00:41:01   [Music] [TS]

00:41:09   I don't know the course [TS]

00:41:13   [Music] [TS]

00:41:16   and so I started to play it feels [TS]

00:41:20   natural I'm seeing counting it out it's [TS]

00:41:21   it's a little weird and so so idea you [TS]

00:41:25   know I don't know who this person was [TS]

00:41:26   but I like turned my phone on myself and [TS]

00:41:30   strummed it into a little video and send [TS]

00:41:34   it to a guy like I don't hear cool [TS]

00:41:36   here's how it is i mean i don't i'm not [TS]

00:41:38   sure you know what I realized is that [TS]

00:41:40   there's a real up stroke you know strum [TS]

00:41:44   strum you know there's a there's a very [TS]

00:41:47   much a a swing to the arm and as I [TS]

00:41:51   started to do it I realized there are [TS]

00:41:52   few songs that i have where I where the [TS]

00:41:55   arm does this kind of almost like a the [TS]

00:41:58   a gesture that a that you would do if [TS]

00:42:02   you were pretending to be the conductor [TS]

00:42:04   of an orchestra for like the kind of [TS]

00:42:06   fake fluidity of a hand that's kind of [TS]

00:42:10   swinging around with an imaginary baton [TS]

00:42:13   going like that it is it about a right [TS]

00:42:17   and as I'm strumming my hand is actually [TS]

00:42:19   kind of swinging around kind of a [TS]

00:42:22   trademark move of yours the swinging [TS]

00:42:24   around hand while the after a strong up [TS]

00:42:26   there is a kind of flourish little towns [TS]

00:42:29   and he kind of flourish little flourish [TS]

00:42:31   but it's but the flourishes I'm not [TS]

00:42:33   conscious of it as a decorative element [TS]

00:42:35   the flourish is there to give my hand [TS]

00:42:38   something to do in the air before it [TS]

00:42:40   comes down because because there's a [TS]

00:42:43   rhythmic you know some damn did a damn [TS]

00:42:48   and the hands gotta do something in [TS]

00:42:51   those little is a bottom and so it kind [TS]

00:42:54   of goes up and spins or spins around a [TS]

00:42:58   little bit like a like a little [TS]

00:42:59   hummingbird like we and i don't i don't [TS]

00:43:03   think about it it's just what's and I [TS]

00:43:06   didn't think about it it just ended up [TS]

00:43:09   like that just feels like a very natural [TS]

00:43:11   scrum and and then the hand you know the [TS]

00:43:14   hand just naturally did that but it's [TS]

00:43:18   that type of thing that I couldn't [TS]

00:43:19   describe it [TS]

00:43:20   I don't know that I'm doing it and I did [TS]

00:43:22   not learn it [TS]

00:43:23   hmm what do you do at what do you call [TS]

00:43:26   that right now and then you discover it [TS]

00:43:28   and you're like oh shit [TS]

00:43:29   you know don't i don't want to know [TS]

00:43:31   about that like if I started thinking [TS]

00:43:33   about it i'm gonna get i might get all [TS]

00:43:36   screwed up [TS]

00:43:37   oh yeah i mean is that how it is with [TS]

00:43:40   key commands i could be it could be but [TS]

00:43:43   i'm thinking like I mean I was never [TS]

00:43:44   very good at music theory I mean I [TS]

00:43:45   learned just enough to be dangerous but [TS]

00:43:48   you know there are people actually [TS]

00:43:49   people using the show who are very [TS]

00:43:50   gifted in music theory and they can do [TS]

00:43:52   stuff like I still I can't tell the [TS]

00:43:54   difference difference between 6834 time [TS]

00:43:56   because i think it's got just go to [TS]

00:43:58   lowest common denominator is all three [TS]

00:43:59   four other people have very strong [TS]

00:44:00   feelings i can I would not account that [TS]

00:44:02   to know the difference [TS]

00:44:03   mhm you probably can but like there's a [TS]

00:44:05   but there are there are people out there [TS]

00:44:07   who would think about and their head I [TS]

00:44:08   think they're probably thinking along [TS]

00:44:09   the lines like how would I know take [TS]

00:44:10   this you know you get those little like [TS]

00:44:13   even the beatles think about something [TS]

00:44:14   like to entertain my way we can work it [TS]

00:44:18   out about the time signatures on we can [TS]

00:44:20   work it out it's not a super-complex [TS]

00:44:22   song but like in the life is very short [TS]

00:44:24   there's a time for fussing and 534 [TS]

00:44:26   bump-bump all I have always thought you [TS]

00:44:29   know and obviously pencil brush so I [TS]

00:44:31   think sometimes people are counting in [TS]

00:44:33   their head if you're having a serious [TS]

00:44:34   like band NERD you have to learn how to [TS]

00:44:36   conduct you have to learn how to count [TS]

00:44:37   and I don't think that's my part of it [TS]

00:44:39   is we never do that because like I just [TS]

00:44:40   rocks but you know there's a lot of 34 [TS]

00:44:43   in the long winter know I know [TS]

00:44:45   cinnamon and and 68 and some of it is [TS]

00:44:49   not where you kind of expected to be [TS]

00:44:51   here or you know the time signature [TS]

00:44:53   stuff how I don't get around is it did [TS]

00:44:56   school me what's the difference [TS]

00:44:58   well see this is the thing for years and [TS]

00:45:00   years i would just one other musicians [TS]

00:45:02   would be playing on that stuff with me [TS]

00:45:04   or I'd be trying to explain it i would [TS]

00:45:07   just say waltz waltz see well yeah well [TS]

00:45:09   it's time to boom song oh bumbo pretty [TS]

00:45:13   bad there who doesn't know or care that [TS]

00:45:14   the two general kind of times you got 44 [TS]

00:45:16   which is almost all music we listen to [TS]

00:45:18   in the west which is could basically be [TS]

00:45:20   described as boom chicka bumper sticker [TS]

00:45:21   or like boom 4134 Wow and you know [TS]

00:45:25   Watson here because it goes 123 123 its [TS]

00:45:28   next three-four time right [TS]

00:45:30   mm but now 68 you got me [TS]

00:45:34   I mean 68 I know it when I feel it it [TS]

00:45:39   feels different than 34 and I don't know [TS]

00:45:43   how to I don't know how to talk about it [TS]

00:45:45   yeah I just and I write things in 68 [TS]

00:45:47   also and don't know and I just I feel I [TS]

00:45:53   feel the difference and its wings [TS]

00:45:55   differently and I'm sure it has [TS]

00:45:58   something to do with something where the [TS]

00:46:00   math of it and the counting you know [TS]

00:46:03   because music is math and math science [TS]

00:46:06   and science nature nature's love right [TS]

00:46:09   so i started love and i get x all but I [TS]

00:46:13   but it's like chutes and ladders right [TS]

00:46:16   some people sometimes ladders about [TS]

00:46:18   these shoots that's right and I just [TS]

00:46:20   sometimes I just shoot down to the song [TS]

00:46:23   without passing through science math and [TS]

00:46:27   nature just pure life i go from love to [TS]

00:46:30   song em on a shoot while a lot while the [TS]

00:46:33   guys in rush are climbing up the ladder [TS]

00:46:35   oh sure jacob's ladder right and i start [TS]

00:46:38   at the top of the shoot they start at [TS]

00:46:40   the bottom of the ladder and who knows [TS]

00:46:42   what happens they arrived at 2112 and I [TS]

00:46:45   get somewhere where I can't tell other [TS]

00:46:47   musicians how my songs go now look at [TS]

00:46:49   the wikipedia page in your life and turn [TS]

00:46:52   it on again right and we talked about [TS]

00:46:53   this turn it on again to turn it on [TS]

00:46:56   again 647 for 13 for 13 8 blogger the [TS]

00:47:02   mean part i want is a TV show I think [TS]

00:47:05   that's 13-8 that's nice and Christine [TS]

00:47:08   830 nate is such a pop song but a bum [TS]

00:47:10   arm on my mind you know that's all on [TS]

00:47:14   Reed Pete [TS]

00:47:16   well sure is a gentle son that's how you [TS]

00:47:18   know a song [TS]

00:47:19   yeah show you i don't know what has [TS]

00:47:25   happened this week I've had too much [TS]

00:47:26   coffee but you are bringing so much [TS]

00:47:28   fucking fault wisdom to our audience [TS]

00:47:31   yeah so all these things that seem [TS]

00:47:32   really obvious they're not they're not [TS]

00:47:34   obvious though that they need to be said [TS]

00:47:37   I haven't have this new song that hasn't [TS]

00:47:39   been really properly recorded yet called [TS]

00:47:41   not moving to portland and it's about [TS]

00:47:43   not moving to Portland [TS]

00:47:45   for a long time well it has been around [TS]

00:47:47   for a really long time but it's never [TS]

00:47:49   been i get i get i get letters sure on [TS]

00:47:52   sentences here [TS]

00:47:54   alright i asked asking me where could [TS]

00:47:58   that song can be found because people [TS]

00:47:59   want to listen to it and and i say i [TS]

00:48:02   don't know it's somewhere you look for [TS]

00:48:04   it on the internet and they're like no [TS]

00:48:05   no I want the recording of it and I go [TS]

00:48:07   that's it i'm sorry that's just what's [TS]

00:48:09   there but I've been thinking seriously [TS]

00:48:12   about recording it properly so that all [TS]

00:48:14   the people that don't listen too long [TS]

00:48:17   winter songs on YouTube that's such a [TS]

00:48:18   good idea for so many reasons you know [TS]

00:48:20   how the song goes [TS]

00:48:21   all you gotta do is get to the mechanics [TS]

00:48:23   no no nothing's easy or simple but you [TS]

00:48:25   get through the mechanics of recording [TS]

00:48:27   that and shit man your juices are going [TS]

00:48:28   again shit man [TS]

00:48:29   yeah shit sucks shit dog shit but so [TS]

00:48:33   that song goes for 45 47 46 845 4746 a [TS]

00:48:43   comment letting you are consciously [TS]

00:48:46   going like I want to make a rush son [TS]

00:48:47   no no I was just like I i wrote the 54 [TS]

00:48:51   part first I really liked it and you [TS]

00:48:54   know was jamming along on it and then if [TS]

00:48:57   you simply stay in five four that's fine [TS]

00:49:00   but you need you need something to jazz [TS]

00:49:04   it a little bit and 54 274 feels amazing [TS]

00:49:07   because just two more right [TS]

00:49:11   yep identity longer want to get the [TS]

00:49:12   higher numerators you notice the [TS]

00:49:17   weirdness last 54 when you sit there [TS]

00:49:19   listening to take five the the official [TS]

00:49:22   song of white people everywhere the [TS]

00:49:24   official chance song of the whites don't [TS]

00:49:27   go don't don't don't like that really [TS]

00:49:29   feels like a little wonky but when you [TS]

00:49:32   get into the higher ones you don't [TS]

00:49:33   notice like a return on again you would [TS]

00:49:35   not notice that that is such a crazy [TS]

00:49:36   time soon well here's the thing about [TS]

00:49:38   13-8 ok right yeah yeah it's 13-8 it's [TS]

00:49:45   an 8 is 64 twice plus 1 [TS]

00:49:49   well I mean most obviously i think sir [TS]

00:49:52   most obviously it's for 43 x plus 1 [TS]

00:49:55   well see if you're going to be like that [TS]

00:49:57   no it's basically it's basically play [TS]

00:49:59   for but uh three bars of a rock song and [TS]

00:50:02   then atopy yeah just add one beats so [TS]

00:50:04   all it all so that added beat feels like [TS]

00:50:09   that's how that's five for you know [TS]

00:50:12   that's a I mean that the extra beat is [TS]

00:50:15   just as easy to throw in and the rest [TS]

00:50:18   just feels like 44 the ninety-nine [TS]

00:50:20   percent of the tune if that's how you're [TS]

00:50:22   playing it or if you're playing six and [TS]

00:50:24   like you know you you do the pattern you [TS]

00:50:26   do it three times and then you hit a [TS]

00:50:27   little like butt up [TS]

00:50:29   that's like that's it I feel like that's [TS]

00:50:32   pretty County like everybody's kind of [TS]

00:50:35   counting it until they until they're [TS]

00:50:37   just feeling it and they're following [TS]

00:50:38   the most yes but that stuff is super fun [TS]

00:50:43   and then you throw then then you go into [TS]

00:50:44   like Soundgarden land and that's my [TS]

00:50:48   least favorite part disneyland [TS]

00:50:49   Soundgarden lands and garden land so [TS]

00:50:52   soon darling farah Sarah not for Aryan [TS]

00:50:58   or sitting there for other that's that's [TS]

00:51:01   the other band some garden is what I [TS]

00:51:04   singing you're seeing the last of the [TS]

00:51:06   Pearl Jam i'll be doing pretty news to [TS]

00:51:08   the tune of any better [TS]

00:51:09   well but I know like watching got [TS]

00:51:11   anything for firm firm isn't using [TS]

00:51:16   backup on that [TS]

00:51:17   yeah yeah because that was a that was in [TS]

00:51:21   the green event that was the band went [TS]

00:51:23   well anybody was never in the Green [TS]

00:51:24   River pan and either either was chris [TS]

00:51:26   cornell so you can talk with the hat and [TS]

00:51:28   the base was in green river got that the [TS]

00:51:30   base was in green river and stone [TS]

00:51:32   gossard was Stone geyser see green river [TS]

00:51:36   was Pearl Jam plus Mudhoney mm were [TS]

00:51:39   genius bus love equals Jackie Rogers Jr [TS]

00:51:42   but you're thinking of temple of the dog [TS]

00:51:48   I want to reach down and pick the crowd [TS]

00:51:52   up [TS]

00:51:53   Wow which one is that that's a ro [TS]

00:51:56   hardware at home ground that's what that [TS]

00:52:03   is her for all and that was the one so [TS]

00:52:09   that song is confusing it's like it's [TS]

00:52:11   like a rat King just it is recommended [TS]

00:52:13   difficult to figure out all these bands [TS]

00:52:15   that was the introduction that the world [TS]

00:52:17   had any better they never heard of him [TS]

00:52:18   before and that music video of them i [TS]

00:52:22   guess standing on a beach around the [TS]

00:52:23   campfire the hungry song [TS]

00:52:25   yeah I I thought it was the one before [TS]

00:52:29   Jeremy 10e room for all yeah butBut [TS]

00:52:34   evenflo kit so my back about Linda [TS]

00:52:37   shoulder day hope my understanding of [TS]

00:52:40   that era which let me let me just jump [TS]

00:52:42   out and say is pretty comprehensive is [TS]

00:52:46   that temple of the dog came out that was [TS]

00:52:49   chris cornell anything for anybody [TS]

00:52:51   following along at home who doesn't care [TS]

00:52:54   mhm uh what you need to start caring huh [TS]

00:52:57   stop not caring is one of my that's [TS]

00:53:00   awesome she likes so wise right stop not [TS]

00:53:04   care about not caring so uh there there [TS]

00:53:07   was a guy in seattle named Andrew Wood [TS]

00:53:09   who fronted a band called the what the [TS]

00:53:14   fuck were they called mother love bone [TS]

00:53:16   monotone of bone Mother Love Bone mother [TS]

00:53:19   love bone but the money's money from [TS]

00:53:21   Seattle [TS]

00:53:22   oh yeah keep it out of my face keep down [TS]

00:53:24   my face that's right touch me I'm sick [TS]

00:53:26   touch me I'm sick she didn't like there [TS]

00:53:28   we go there and they're not a whole [TS]

00:53:29   different place working with all that [TS]

00:53:31   you know the lead singer of money is he [TS]

00:53:36   works at sub pop records huh [TS]

00:53:38   he's still around essence you know [TS]

00:53:40   they're all still around because Seattle [TS]

00:53:42   you know what I mean like yeah [TS]

00:53:44   everybody's down with the cause here [TS]

00:53:45   it's like a college town [TS]

00:53:47   those guys are definitely down there [TS]

00:53:48   down with the struggle but Andrew Wood [TS]

00:53:51   was very flamboyant lead singer of [TS]

00:53:53   Mother Love Bone during the era where it [TS]

00:53:56   was unclear whether seattle was going to [TS]

00:53:58   be like a hair metal town [TS]

00:54:01   or whether it was going to be something [TS]

00:54:03   else like a shitty grungy town which is [TS]

00:54:05   what it ended up that ended up being [TS]

00:54:07   popular [TS]

00:54:08   oh there we go mother love bone so [TS]

00:54:10   mother love bone was that they were here [TS]

00:54:11   farmers and they were wearing scarves [TS]

00:54:14   and I make us kind of glam very super [TS]

00:54:16   glam and it was coming out of the like [TS]

00:54:18   poison a put a cherry on it whatever [TS]

00:54:23   LACMA look at that they do I had no idea [TS]

00:54:26   they look a little bit done yeah yeah [TS]

00:54:28   where you're like you know jellyfish [TS]

00:54:30   minus pop gonna have like a 60 throwback [TS]

00:54:33   kind of thing [TS]

00:54:34   yeah but that was what was happening in [TS]

00:54:35   89 right everybody's wearing Paisley [TS]

00:54:37   shirts with sure the sleeves and and [TS]

00:54:40   we're going to type of guitars and like [TS]

00:54:43   put a what look what the cat dragged in [TS]

00:54:46   style like like teased hair and so that [TS]

00:54:50   band also had a I mean they were like [TS]

00:54:55   one of the be bands here at the time and [TS]

00:55:00   stone gossard was also in that just [TS]

00:55:04   meant was in the band so they went from [TS]

00:55:07   the from the one bandwidth Mudhoney [TS]

00:55:10   where they were pulled in different [TS]

00:55:12   directions because if you look at the if [TS]

00:55:13   you look at Green River that the mud [TS]

00:55:18   hunt so hats half Mudhoney Steve Turner [TS]

00:55:21   the guitar player of money is in green [TS]

00:55:25   apple green river there was also being [TS]

00:55:28   called green-apple quick-step and I keep [TS]

00:55:30   stumbling over the who but so those guys [TS]

00:55:33   were punk and then stone and Jeff were [TS]

00:55:37   like glam and in seattle the time you [TS]

00:55:40   can just do that when I'm you don't mean [TS]

00:55:42   just do that you just have a band that [TS]

00:55:45   was like a funk have claimed but then it [TS]

00:55:49   turned into a mother love bone which was [TS]

00:55:53   all blam all the time [TS]

00:55:56   okay all glam no sham mhm as what we [TS]

00:55:59   used to not say [TS]

00:56:01   and Andrew Wood was one of these guys it [TS]

00:56:06   was like Hello cannot get the ladies up [TS]

00:56:08   here you know he was like a David Lee [TS]

00:56:09   Roth we kind of yeah right and he was [TS]

00:56:12   wait a minute wait for essen wait for it [TS]

00:56:15   chris cornell's roommate and best friend [TS]

00:56:18   turns out turns out chris cornell's [TS]

00:56:21   roommate and best friend and chris [TS]

00:56:22   cornell is in Soundgarden hair soon as [TS]

00:56:26   garden Stein and but Soundgarden was not [TS]

00:56:29   especially glam they were much more they [TS]

00:56:32   weren't they weren't like punk either [TS]

00:56:34   they were like at all they were Zeppelin [TS]

00:56:36   II mattaponi metal yeah but now we do [TS]

00:56:38   with the melvins from Seattle the [TS]

00:56:40   melvins were from Olympia Wash okay [TS]

00:56:42   sorry alright and they were they repped [TS]

00:56:45   south sound pretty hard but they were [TS]

00:56:47   the melvins were III them again the [TS]

00:56:50   racking free Melvin's are more like [TS]

00:56:52   sabes e.e will ya like punky saben lucky [TS]

00:56:56   Sabbath yeah but Melvin's were very [TS]

00:56:58   influential because the melvins where [TS]

00:57:00   the band that Kurt Cobain wanted to be [TS]

00:57:02   in they were them they were the cool [TS]

00:57:04   band that that Nirvana like was always [TS]

00:57:07   sort of like hey guys can we carry your [TS]

00:57:10   amps Catholic it was they were seriously [TS]

00:57:12   they were like the godfathers of that [TS]

00:57:15   vibe but the melvins had no time for any [TS]

00:57:18   of this bullshit who they were just they [TS]

00:57:20   weren't into glam they were doing their [TS]

00:57:22   own South CS South like Olympia style [TS]

00:57:26   that's the shit where they had like moss [TS]

00:57:28   growing in there in their nostrils and [TS]

00:57:31   stuff like that part of washington is [TS]

00:57:35   just what what is the equivalent and [TS]

00:57:37   there is no equivalent in California [TS]

00:57:39   there are definitely equivalents in a in [TS]

00:57:43   Oregon to this it's like a college town [TS]

00:57:47   full of a narco hippie kind of santa [TS]

00:57:51   cruz no Santa Cruz to its to clean and [TS]

00:57:56   to surfer who died and for sure Santa [TS]

00:57:58   Cruz oriented toward the water and in [TS]

00:58:01   the sort of olympia aberdeen nexus it is [TS]

00:58:04   also oriented to the water but but it's [TS]

00:58:07   like oriented to more like add dragging [TS]

00:58:10   the river for bodies kind of way exactly [TS]

00:58:11   like a like you go out there [TS]

00:58:14   you're harvesting sealife em and then [TS]

00:58:18   you're bringing it back and selling it [TS]

00:58:20   in order to pump up the tires on your [TS]

00:58:22   mobile home because you keep thinking [TS]

00:58:24   that you're gonna put it behind the [TS]

00:58:25   truck and trailer somewhere that's the [TS]

00:58:27   spring States you know what I mean like [TS]

00:58:30   you know what my tires food and full-on [TS]

00:58:33   19th birthday I got a fishing license [TS]

00:58:36   and a bag of chilled we're gonna one day [TS]

00:58:40   sweetheart we're gonna get out of this [TS]

00:58:41   town as soon as I can get the tires on [TS]

00:58:44   this thing up and that means I go out to [TS]

00:58:47   see one more time baby this town rips [TS]

00:58:49   the vein from your shrimp and I'm gonna [TS]

00:58:52   you know what I'm gonna get a license to [TS]

00:58:54   harvest gooey duck and when i get 14 [TS]

00:58:58   gooey duck i'm gonna some to Japan [TS]

00:59:00   I'm gonna get new tires on this rig and [TS]

00:59:02   we're getting out of here we're going [TS]

00:59:03   all the way to swim [TS]

00:59:05   Gordon fisherman meets of my submit yeah [TS]

00:59:09   okay right except their own time about [TS]

00:59:11   the rabbits George except there aren't [TS]

00:59:13   even like the colorful characters it's [TS]

00:59:17   kind of like old greg from the mighty [TS]

00:59:19   boosh wow nice pole [TS]

00:59:21   I'm old lady you not old greg i'm old [TS]

00:59:25   gregg like he comes up out of the sea [TS]

00:59:27   and keys it turns out he's a kurt [TS]

00:59:29   cobain's uncle whenever a girl named [TS]

00:59:32   Greg but no massey of massey another so [TS]

00:59:38   temple of the dog was chris cornell's [TS]

00:59:41   record that he wrote in tribute to his [TS]

00:59:44   best friend and the wood who had [TS]

00:59:46   recently died of a heroin overdose [TS]

00:59:49   he was the first big rock star of the [TS]

00:59:51   Seattle seen two died of heroin and it [TS]

00:59:55   was was it has John he was not the last [TS]

00:59:57   my friend in some ways he [TS]

00:59:57   my friend in some ways he [TS]

01:00:00   he set the tone which was hey if you're [TS]

01:00:03   going to be a big deal in this town [TS]

01:00:04   you're gonna have to die of heroin [TS]

01:00:05   yeah but so temple of the dog was the [TS]

01:00:09   big tribute record the chris cornell [TS]

01:00:12   road and then right at the last minute a [TS]

01:00:15   his pals we're starting this new band [TS]

01:00:18   with this kid from California named [TS]

01:00:20   Eddie better and very generously i like [TS]

01:00:23   to think it was a very generous move on [TS]

01:00:25   chris cornell's part it was like well [TS]

01:00:27   why don't you sing on my tribute record [TS]

01:00:29   to Andy would a guy sang lead on that [TS]

01:00:31   song a guy you never met writer I mean [TS]

01:00:33   if any better met Andy would it was not [TS]

01:00:35   his behind music my friend i did not [TS]

01:00:37   know these things that won't know any [TS]

01:00:39   better wouldn't really have met Andy [TS]

01:00:40   would because the reason that stone [TS]

01:00:42   gossard and Jeff meant even met any [TS]

01:00:45   better was because their bandwidth and [TS]

01:00:49   he would had just broken up because any [TS]

01:00:51   one time and so they were like what we [TS]

01:00:53   got we know we want to do this let's [TS]

01:00:54   form a new band and we'll put out a call [TS]

01:00:57   for singers so Eddie so chris cornell's [TS]

01:01:01   like yeah man why don't you sing on this [TS]

01:01:02   tribute to my old best pal that was the [TS]

01:01:05   singer of your bandmates old band and [TS]

01:01:08   like here you go why don't you take the [TS]

01:01:10   lead on this tune that becomes the big [TS]

01:01:13   MTV smash that really touched off the [TS]

01:01:17   whole pearl jam Soundgarden metal side [TS]

01:01:20   of MTV brunch for da boom stick the [TS]

01:01:25   landing Seattle rock history to pow boom [TS]

01:01:31   there it is you and all those bros all [TS]

01:01:34   those bros knew each other and we're all [TS]

01:01:37   broke pals back in the day and your good [TS]

01:01:39   friend Jason thin also knew all those [TS]

01:01:42   bros look at that the check in Austin's [TS]

01:01:44   back to Jason Jason fin he was there he [TS]

01:01:46   was there and his band love battery [TS]

01:01:49   right we're not very good let's be [TS]

01:01:53   honest [TS]

01:01:55   um but uh I didn't ever tell you the [TS]

01:01:59   story we were walking down the street [TS]

01:02:00   one time it seems like now many years [TS]

01:02:03   ago but he was probably already 33 years [TS]

01:02:05   old and he's like God unless I'm gonna [TS]

01:02:07   get a tattoo like do you have any [TS]

01:02:09   tattoos now now [TS]

01:02:11   well you're you're in your thirties why [TS]

01:02:14   are you getting a tattoo [TS]

01:02:15   I'm gonna get a tattoo of love battery i [TS]

01:02:18   was like love battery your band broke up [TS]

01:02:19   ten years ago [TS]

01:02:20   he's like that's right and so we walked [TS]

01:02:23   into a tattoo parlor [TS]

01:02:25   I don't even know why I don't know why I [TS]

01:02:26   was there you just encountered him on [TS]

01:02:28   the streets a lot you run into him a lot [TS]

01:02:29   yeah give me any of your anecdotes [TS]

01:02:31   involving Jason Finn involves running [TS]

01:02:34   into him on the street now you run into [TS]

01:02:35   when you guys go ahead a little [TS]

01:02:36   adventure that's what you do in certain [TS]

01:02:38   questions about what he's doing in that [TS]

01:02:39   neighborhood if he has questions about [TS]

01:02:41   what I'm doing but uh but so I where he [TS]

01:02:45   went we went into this tattoo parlor was [TS]

01:02:47   back behind the hair salon kind of up [TS]

01:02:49   above the taqueria express and he sits [TS]

01:02:52   in the chair and he's like here's what i [TS]

01:02:53   want and he pulls out the cover art to [TS]

01:02:56   his Sub Pop release from 1990 or [TS]

01:03:00   something like that he's like put that [TS]

01:03:01   on my arm and it's the only tattoo he [TS]

01:03:04   has swag wow yeah and it was some kind [TS]

01:03:07   of retro at the time I was like is this [TS]

01:03:10   revisionist are you putting this tattoo [TS]

01:03:12   on you as though you had it on then all [TS]

01:03:15   i see i've had this shirt all along [TS]

01:03:17   yeah exactly you know what I mean my ass [TS]

01:03:19   your band but you didn't get a tattoo of [TS]

01:03:22   your band when it was a bad now you're [TS]

01:03:23   getting it as post band [TS]

01:03:26   it would also be like you have to [TS]

01:03:27   Instagram a little bit i mean you know [TS]

01:03:29   what I mean a filter like you wouldn't [TS]

01:03:30   want the because you can for some pretty [TS]

01:03:32   good inc at this point you want to get [TS]

01:03:33   the shitty tattoo he would had in 1992 [TS]

01:03:37   happy legit but but he said no it's not [TS]

01:03:39   revisionist I just you know that band [TS]

01:03:41   was very important to me and i want to i [TS]

01:03:44   want to commemorate its good for him and [TS]

01:03:46   what's what's really sad is that when [TS]

01:03:48   love battery gets together now to play [TS]

01:03:50   shows i don't think they I think they [TS]

01:03:52   get a different from her behind not [TS]

01:03:55   because Jason isn't a fantastic drummer [TS]

01:03:57   but just because Seattle music politics [TS]

01:03:59   is weird and I think maybe Jason's less [TS]

01:04:02   horrible that's like the world's least [TS]

01:04:03   interesting oh Henry story [TS]

01:04:05   well except here at six and Jason like [TS]

01:04:07   left love [TS]

01:04:08   Adrian alerts when he got cherry picked [TS]

01:04:11   to be investing that man they still [TS]

01:04:12   planning [TS]

01:04:13   yeah well no he's not anymore because [TS]

01:04:15   the singer of the presidents of the USA [TS]

01:04:17   Today music now decided he wanted to do [TS]

01:04:19   kids music exclusive for baby pants and [TS]

01:04:22   that's right Casper baby follow him on [TS]

01:04:24   the Twitter he's a very big deal and his [TS]

01:04:26   music is very spectacular right and he [TS]

01:04:29   was like you know what being in a rock [TS]

01:04:30   band for a people that are playing for [TS]

01:04:33   grownups all the time [TS]

01:04:34   hmm means that i have to travel around [TS]

01:04:36   ladies shows for dummies and everybody's [TS]

01:04:40   john sloan in and make five or six [TS]

01:04:43   figures and reschedule you for the [TS]

01:04:44   weekend [TS]

01:04:45   yeah but he's you know it's it's it's [TS]

01:04:47   honestly like I local dude to yeah he [TS]

01:04:50   doesn't need the money and I'll caspar [TS]

01:04:51   babypants but believe me I understand [TS]

01:04:54   yeah he's a guy that's like I don't want [TS]

01:04:55   to stay up until midnight to wait to [TS]

01:04:57   play for a bunch of drunks i wanted i [TS]

01:04:59   want to sleep in my own bed and I can [TS]

01:05:01   make music for kids who really love it [TS]

01:05:03   that that's nice what are you gonna do [TS]

01:05:06   adjacent you gotta put that kind of work [TS]

01:05:08   is he playing a different man now being [TS]

01:05:10   Jason needs a job now you should have a [TS]

01:05:12   play with you [TS]

01:05:13   well Jason thinks so too and I you know [TS]

01:05:16   I glove Jamie is a very good drummer is [TS]

01:05:19   very good drummer but that's not the [TS]

01:05:20   issue [TS]

01:05:20   that's not the issue the issue is that [TS]

01:05:23   Jason was the was the band manager of [TS]

01:05:27   the presidents of the USA he was the [TS]

01:05:30   thing that kind of kept that machine [TS]

01:05:32   rollin he's appalled [TS]

01:05:35   yeah because Dave Meinert who used to be [TS]

01:05:38   the president of the USA manager they [TS]

01:05:40   fired him for something because they [TS]

01:05:43   were all too close to each other they [TS]

01:05:44   were all in bed with each other and then [TS]

01:05:45   Dave Meinert signed the Lumineers and [TS]

01:05:47   now is a million billion oh so Dave [TS]

01:05:50   minor got the last laugh on everybody in [TS]

01:05:52   this town because he just was like you [TS]

01:05:54   know what I'm band manager uh let's see [TS]

01:05:56   about my son these guys and you know [TS]

01:05:58   stomp-stomp-stomp far as i can tell did [TS]

01:06:01   no work at all and all of a sudden they [TS]

01:06:02   were there it's old like a million [TS]

01:06:04   records and land out of money in that [TS]

01:06:06   the cell phone commercial music I was [TS]

01:06:08   sitting with Dave's and he was trying to [TS]

01:06:11   use trying to figure out what he was [TS]

01:06:13   going to like what his next project was [TS]

01:06:15   going to be and at one point he said [TS]

01:06:17   well you know one of these days very [TS]

01:06:20   soon [TS]

01:06:20   soon a check is going to literally [TS]

01:06:23   arrived in my mailbox for a million [TS]

01:06:24   dollars or and so I'm sitting here right [TS]

01:06:27   now talking to you in a in a certain [TS]

01:06:30   state which is the state of someone who [TS]

01:06:33   is working and has the X amount of [TS]

01:06:38   dollars like this the small amount that [TS]

01:06:39   you would have if you own a business but [TS]

01:06:42   I've already earned this million dollars [TS]

01:06:45   it just hasn't arrived in my mailbox and [TS]

01:06:49   I was like wow this is a pregnant moment [TS]

01:06:51   yeah one and like in that kind of [TS]

01:06:52   situation you get alc get paid last but [TS]

01:06:55   there's a lot of other lot of move a lot [TS]

01:06:57   of different monies have to move through [TS]

01:06:59   different pipes then be processed with [TS]

01:07:02   apportionments made two different other [TS]

01:07:03   people's monies and it might be quite a [TS]

01:07:05   while before you see any of that [TS]

01:07:06   well except he's the Manager so he's the [TS]

01:07:09   pipes [TS]

01:07:09   he's the pipes is the PI he survived the [TS]

01:07:12   money moved into his pipes first he [TS]

01:07:14   piped out and everybody but this was his [TS]

01:07:16   personal cut of the money pipe i get it [TS]

01:07:19   and he so he knew what it was he knew he [TS]

01:07:22   had earned it because he watched it go [TS]

01:07:24   by the first time anyway huh [TS]

01:07:27   the problem with having Jason thin in [TS]

01:07:29   the long winters is that we talked we [TS]

01:07:32   have talked about it many times and [TS]

01:07:33   chases played with the longer but here's [TS]

01:07:36   the here's how the conversation goes hey [TS]

01:07:37   Jason do you want to be in the long [TS]

01:07:38   winters [TS]

01:07:39   yes ok well let's start talking about to [TS]

01:07:42   her and he's like all right well what [TS]

01:07:44   what kind of you know what kind of brand [TS]

01:07:47   of cables do you use and I'm like huh [TS]

01:07:49   I don't know Smith brand no no you can't [TS]

01:07:53   use Smith brand those are bullshit that [TS]

01:07:55   I tell you what I'll handle I'm like [TS]

01:07:58   when I will well how you been in the [TS]

01:08:00   band like 11 can click the bidirectional [TS]

01:08:02   cables you know the the the directional [TS]

01:08:05   and so right away he's like Trey's [TS]

01:08:09   managing the band and I'm like that will [TS]

01:08:12   settle down i like those Smith cables is [TS]

01:08:14   like nada [TS]

01:08:16   so it's not it's not a musical problem [TS]

01:08:19   it's just that he cannot manage me and I [TS]

01:08:23   cannot be managed season he's a border [TS]

01:08:26   collie yeah he's that's right he's a [TS]

01:08:29   he's an Australian Shepherd it's in the [TS]

01:08:30   reason is it is breeding for many things [TS]

01:08:33   to do is grab people [TS]

01:08:34   by the pants dragging through the yard [TS]

01:08:35   yeah he's trying to get me to go through [TS]

01:08:37   the gate and then then turn and go [TS]

01:08:40   through the second gate and then go up [TS]

01:08:43   over the hill go through a third gate [TS]

01:08:44   and then have everybody like the [TS]

01:08:47   whatever going to a Corral mhm and i am [TS]

01:08:51   an eagle who does not want to work with [TS]

01:08:54   the turkeys right and so you know i'm [TS]

01:08:59   not even my cubicle and I have that sign [TS]

01:09:02   posted on the outside of the door which [TS]

01:09:04   is a real slap in the face [TS]

01:09:06   everyone at work I can soar with Eagles [TS]

01:09:08   if you're flying with turkeys yeah yeah [TS]

01:09:11   imagine wise the that's serious business [TS]

01:09:13   and so what so and what we end up doing [TS]

01:09:18   is going to dim sum and talk about [TS]

01:09:19   something else that smart but up until [TS]

01:09:21   now I haven't there's not what you know [TS]

01:09:24   what what band what band could I'd did i [TS]

01:09:26   even have been be the drummer in yeah [TS]

01:09:28   but I got an interesting text message [TS]

01:09:32   the other day from the bass player of [TS]

01:09:33   pretty girls make graves who said who [TS]

01:09:38   was as you know the former bass player [TS]

01:09:41   of the murder city devils oh yeah right [TS]

01:09:44   okay i did not know that he texted me [TS]

01:09:47   and said hey why don't we play some [TS]

01:09:48   music [TS]

01:09:49   that's a nice text message right and I [TS]

01:09:51   was like whoa like the murder city [TS]

01:09:54   devils into pretty girls make graves [TS]

01:09:55   that's a pretty cool kid music lineage [TS]

01:09:59   that was you know was like a parallel [TS]

01:10:04   lines with my music lineage but now now [TS]

01:10:08   sort of never intersect I feel like I've [TS]

01:10:10   seen the murder scene actually I've seen [TS]

01:10:12   them like at bottom of the hill yet [TS]

01:10:14   probably did they set their piano on [TS]

01:10:16   fire what they can look at pictures here [TS]

01:10:18   I don't remember piano fire that was [TS]

01:10:20   kind of one of their signature moves [TS]

01:10:21   later on they have they hired a piano [TS]

01:10:24   player [TS]

01:10:24   young woman who was very rock and roll [TS]

01:10:27   and one of the things they did was set [TS]

01:10:29   their piano on fire that's nice [TS]

01:10:31   it's you know like you said your guitar [TS]

01:10:33   on fire that's been done but I want to [TS]

01:10:34   move it right let's think when you were [TS]

01:10:36   talking about Sarah you're the the lady [TS]

01:10:39   who plays the device i instantly thought [TS]

01:10:41   of Ben Folds Five and the story goes on [TS]

01:10:44   the first two were they actually toured [TS]

01:10:46   with a baby grand piano [TS]

01:10:48   uh-huh so they don't have to think about [TS]

01:10:49   the places you've gone and got to take [TS]

01:10:51   my amp up there and they would have a [TS]

01:10:53   baby grand piano that they would have to [TS]

01:10:55   carry up stones did he take the lists [TS]

01:10:57   ridiculous idiot you know Keane the but [TS]

01:11:02   my good good pals from mingling they [TS]

01:11:06   have a very very special piano that [TS]

01:11:11   confusingly no one else uses which is [TS]

01:11:15   the yamaha CP 70 i think which is an [TS]

01:11:22   electric piano that has strings [TS]

01:11:25   oh but it doesn't sound like a our roads [TS]

01:11:29   no that's the thing of the roads is [TS]

01:11:31   actually kind of a vibraphone brilliance [TS]

01:11:35   very different sounds like it's hitting [TS]

01:11:37   bars [TS]

01:11:38   it is yeah it's hitting little bars that [TS]

01:11:39   go boom where they were heavy since [TS]

01:11:42   they're so heavy well you think those [TS]

01:11:44   are heavy [TS]

01:11:45   look up a CP 7am it's a piano yeah it's [TS]

01:11:48   a it's a it's a infant grant but it but [TS]

01:11:51   it it's collapsible it collapses into a [TS]

01:11:54   like that this has strings & hammers in [TS]

01:11:59   it [TS]

01:11:59   yeah yeah but it's an electric pis stay [TS]

01:12:02   in tune like if you're like with the [TS]

01:12:04   Florida how would it stay in tune [TS]

01:12:05   this is the think so keen this is their [TS]

01:12:07   signature p.m. ok it's on all their [TS]

01:12:10   things get Tim Rice oxley plays at every [TS]

01:12:12   show and they arrived in a town and then [TS]

01:12:16   a piano tuner comes and tunes their [TS]

01:12:19   piano every night before the show which [TS]

01:12:21   is not a small operation sounds like a [TS]

01:12:23   euphemism as here that's right you show [TS]

01:12:26   up for the total combined typically and [TS]

01:12:28   you know what to my piano baby at that [TS]

01:12:32   let's see lower at which is that is an [TS]

01:12:35   incredible [TS]

01:12:36   that's an incredible deal right [TS]

01:12:38   of touring with one of those but then [TS]

01:12:41   check out privilege my goodness i got [TS]

01:12:43   home [TS]

01:12:44   well this is the this is the this is the [TS]

01:12:46   trick I got home and was talking to my [TS]

01:12:48   brother Bart and I was like yeah i just [TS]

01:12:50   did this tour with the with key they're [TS]

01:12:52   playing this piano called CP 70 because [TS]

01:12:54   you know my brother is a professional [TS]

01:12:55   piano player and Bart said oh yeah I [TS]

01:12:59   used to tour with the CP 70 well bard [TS]

01:13:02   when he says to her he means travel in a [TS]

01:13:06   ford van with no back seat like a like a [TS]

01:13:10   like a black flag back van and play at [TS]

01:13:14   ramada ins across the northwest and I [TS]

01:13:18   was like you play you tour with the CP [TS]

01:13:21   70 that's insane [TS]

01:13:22   oh he's like yeah I used to tour with a [TS]

01:13:24   Hammond b3 with a row with the boat a [TS]

01:13:27   speaker rotating speaker and he said [TS]

01:13:31   we'd show up to the thing and I'd get my [TS]

01:13:33   hand truck out and the other guys [TS]

01:13:36   wouldn't even help me I would just load [TS]

01:13:37   and load the b3 and the Leslie in myself [TS]

01:13:40   every time and loaded out at the end of [TS]

01:13:42   the night so I'm like I gotta see your [TS]

01:13:44   CP 70 so he takes me down in his [TS]

01:13:47   basement in Yakima [TS]

01:13:49   here's this piano completely shredded [TS]

01:13:51   right all the tolex is ripped it looks [TS]

01:13:54   like it's been dropped off of a building [TS]

01:13:56   it looks like the toyota hilux that was [TS]

01:14:00   in the TV show who [TS]

01:14:05   what's the English the car TV show top [TS]

01:14:08   gear top gear [TS]

01:14:10   there's that toyota hilux that they [TS]

01:14:12   tried to destroy it is that what they [TS]

01:14:14   like driver driver Yankee car [TS]

01:14:16   no it's not that it's they bought a new [TS]

01:14:17   Toyota and they tried to destroy it so [TS]

01:14:19   that the engine wouldn't start [TS]

01:14:21   ok and they actually dropped it from a [TS]

01:14:23   crane and they drove it into a lake I [TS]

01:14:26   mean they destroyed this truck and then [TS]

01:14:27   they would get in it and they turn the [TS]

01:14:28   key in the promoter would start it was [TS]

01:14:30   kind of like about to show how durable [TS]

01:14:32   it was to show how durable got it ok [TS]

01:14:35   anyway so parts like yeah I don't want [TS]

01:14:36   that fucking thing is it's taking up my [TS]

01:14:38   basement and i gave Wow and right now i [TS]

01:14:42   have a totally trashed yamaha CP 70 in [TS]

01:14:46   the closet of my backpack and I don't [TS]

01:14:48   know what to do with it but i can't [TS]

01:14:50   throw a key [TS]

01:14:51   get rid of it why could it shit dawg [TS]
