17: The iPhone 5 , with MG Siegler

00:00:00   I'm a hypocrite if I if I want to

00:00:05   continue to poopoo everybody who

00:00:08   complains about things like the new

00:00:11   lightning adapter and new magsafe for

00:00:16   the retina macbook pro but that I still

00:00:20   want to complain that it took me 10

00:00:21   minutes to get set up here because i'm

00:00:23   recording on the macbook air but i only

00:00:25   had the retina adapter here at this desk

00:00:28   so you had to do it you have a an

00:00:33   adapter for the the light media know all

00:00:41   i have is the one USB to lightning cable

00:00:45   that comes in the iphone box yet so it

00:00:52   actually and I even mentioned in my

00:00:53   review if anything I feel like it almost

00:00:56   gave me a better stress test of the

00:00:58   battery because yes so that our you make

00:01:01   sure the way I'm you don't have someone

00:01:03   with you at all points right like I'll

00:01:06   go downstairs and we have one in the

00:01:08   kitchen and if I make coffee or

00:01:10   something in the morning I'll just you

00:01:11   know I'll just put my phone in there for

00:01:13   five minutes and you know give it five

00:01:15   minutes jus sit here and there because

00:01:16   why not there's a cable right there

00:01:18   yeah I'm most concerned for my you know

00:01:23   work and it going to these tech

00:01:24   conferences because right now you don't

00:01:26   even think twice about it if you didn't

00:01:27   put the the charger in your bag there's

00:01:30   going to be two hundred other people who

00:01:31   have one right and now there will be

00:01:34   significantly less at least for the

00:01:36   first pursuit weeks at least

00:01:38   so yeah and the other thing that I'm

00:01:41   worried about in the interim I mean and

00:01:44   obviously this will be a moot point

00:01:45   hopefully by Christmas i would think but

00:01:47   the fact that there's nothing like a

00:01:48   month yes yes I was just talking about

00:01:50   that today to arm i wonder how quick i

00:01:53   don't think anyone's talk to them that

00:01:54   there would be a good story to see how

00:01:56   quickly they'll all come out with their

00:01:58   thing they had to have obviously been at

00:02:00   the kind of listening to the rumors and

00:02:02   knowing the specs and everything and

00:02:03   hopefully getting something ready to go

00:02:05   I don't know how far along that those

00:02:07   some case makers you know as as we help

00:02:09   goin and Asia seem to go they just go

00:02:12   out and make it like based on

00:02:13   even rumored specs I didn't like play

00:02:16   blackjack with it they don't know if

00:02:18   movies a company like that because

00:02:19   there's a little bit more involved with

00:02:20   the the power angle of it so and plus

00:02:24   they didn't have the new dock connector

00:02:25   so that's that's actually a big

00:02:26   undertaking for them i wonder how

00:02:28   quickly they can get one out

00:02:31   yeah I wonder and I would you know and

00:02:34   it's also like sort of a black box what

00:02:36   Apple's relationship is with those

00:02:38   companies like yeah I are there any of

00:02:41   them that are actually in good enough

00:02:43   graces that maybe they got small heads

00:02:45   up i know ya know a lot of people at

00:02:48   Apple use movies just like the rest of

00:02:51   us too so that could be some sort of

00:02:53   indicator I'm surprised what do you

00:02:55   think about why doesn't Apple just do a

00:02:57   case like that

00:02:58   why leave this in so many people use you

00:03:01   know a a case battery charger thing why

00:03:04   not why not move into that at all as

00:03:06   add-on accessory totally optional of

00:03:09   course but don't you think that I i

00:03:12   think it's probably a perception issue

00:03:14   right that you have you sold one yeah it

00:03:17   would create the perception that the

00:03:19   phone needs

00:03:20   yep I actually also think that's why

00:03:22   they've gotten away from the bumpers is

00:03:24   that I feel like the way that the bumper

00:03:27   thing turned out is that people thought

00:03:29   that a lot of people took it as meaning

00:03:32   that the phone needs a bumper or a case

00:03:35   of some sort right and the whole

00:03:37   antennagate thing which was really just

00:03:39   a coincidence right

00:03:41   I'm convinced i I've talked to people on

00:03:43   and off the record at apple and I'm

00:03:45   convinced that the fact that the bumper

00:03:48   alleviated the attenuation was it's just

00:03:52   a coincidence they made the bumper

00:03:53   because they thought they could make a

00:03:54   lot of money selling bumpers two people

00:03:56   yep and that they look kind of cool and

00:03:58   because they thought I the aesthetically

00:04:02   hey everybody's buying cases for the

00:04:04   phones already they're going to keep

00:04:05   buying cases no matter what we do but we

00:04:07   put a lot of effort into this beautiful

00:04:08   glass bat right let's make one that

00:04:11   shows it off and show that ok we even if

00:04:14   you do want a case for protective

00:04:15   purposes

00:04:16   you don't have to cover up the whole

00:04:18   back of the phone

00:04:19   and then the antennagate thing hit and

00:04:21   it was all just coincidence but it

00:04:23   created the perception and you'll never

00:04:25   be able to convince the people who

00:04:26   believe this otherwise that Apple knew

00:04:28   all along right at the iphone 4 needed a

00:04:31   bumper because otherwise it wouldn't

00:04:32   hold right and now that's probably just

00:04:34   you know up being blown even more out

00:04:38   now that affect this one doesn't have it

00:04:40   because you know maybe they better fix

00:04:43   it this time

00:04:44   cool still one of my all-time favorite

00:04:47   moments at an apple event was the

00:04:49   antenna great one when they when they

00:04:51   took questions and I i remember me i

00:04:54   remember i think you're sitting kind of

00:04:55   close to each other yeah right ah and I

00:04:59   asked do you guys use the bumper and it

00:05:02   was jobs filler and Bob manchild Cook

00:05:08   was up there wasn't he

00:05:09   I don't have anything that was I think

00:05:13   Bob Marley wasn't maybe it was jobs

00:05:15   cooking mansfield definitely was

00:05:17   I'm sure there's a picture somewhere we

00:05:19   could find yeah and they instead of

00:05:20   really answering i'll just reached into

00:05:22   their jeans and pulled them out and they

00:05:24   all had you know iphone 4s with no

00:05:26   bumper funny i can just google

00:05:28   interrogate that's the size of course

00:05:32   what it's called so let's see if I had

00:05:39   been

00:05:39   Harper and I did regret there was

00:05:41   something i would have it was to close

00:05:42   jobs and Bob Mansfield huh yep I've my

00:05:48   my regret on that incident though is

00:05:49   that I didn't follow up with are you

00:05:51   worried that this free bumper program is

00:05:54   going to create the perception that you

00:05:56   need the bumper and I didn't ask that

00:05:58   and nobody quite ask that and I would

00:06:00   you know such a rare case that you

00:06:01   actually got to ask questions yeah at an

00:06:04   event

00:06:04   yeah but anyway no that's why i think

00:06:10   apple doesn't do the battery pack thing

00:06:12   themselves I think they're happy to

00:06:15   leave that to third parties and sell

00:06:17   them in the store and still make some

00:06:19   money on yeah yeah I'm excited for for a

00:06:23   new movie just for when i travel you

00:06:25   know the little ones will hit on it a

00:06:27   little bit the battery with this phone

00:06:29   but uh I mean there's just no getting

00:06:31   around it even if it's a great battery

00:06:33   you're going to need you're traveling

00:06:34   you're going to need it some kind of you

00:06:37   know extra mophie or bring your power

00:06:39   cable with you right if you're far away

00:06:42   from for 12 hours right

00:06:44   I I in in you know as the years have

00:06:47   gone on at least since mophie these

00:06:48   movie things existed i don't remember

00:06:51   them in the 3gs era if they if they

00:06:53   existed i didn't have used to have like

00:06:55   I think you stuck on the bottom they

00:06:58   definitely had one because i had not a

00:07:00   mophie but it was something that and I

00:07:01   remember because it had like a curved

00:07:03   back to to you know perfectly place in

00:07:05   the curve back of the the 3g and 3gs it

00:07:09   was it didn't have a top to it so it's

00:07:11   kind of just like a bottom thing but

00:07:12   yeah definitely wasn't I i think it's it

00:07:16   it's one of those things that I i'm

00:07:18   guessing you're going to agree with me

00:07:19   and then it's going to make the people

00:07:21   who still complain that the iphone

00:07:25   doesn't have a replaceable battery and

00:07:27   you know it is half an inch thick want

00:07:29   to strangle us but I think it's actually

00:07:32   a very graceful solution to the protein

00:07:34   problem where day-to-day i love how thin

00:07:37   the iphone is i will really love how

00:07:39   much thinner die from five is and I get

00:07:43   through the day with plenty of battery

00:07:45   life I mean we're recording at 725

00:07:47   Eastern as

00:07:48   we record and I've got what I don't have

00:07:51   the percentage on but it looks like I've

00:07:52   got at least seventy percent battery

00:07:54   life left

00:07:55   yep and then on this phone and that's

00:07:57   typical for me I'd i usually make it

00:08:00   through the day and have half a charge

00:08:01   left no project and on days like you

00:08:06   said conferences are killer and you know

00:08:08   like going to WTC or something like that

00:08:10   there's no way i could make it through

00:08:12   the day and i'm often you're not even

00:08:14   near your you know in the middle of the

00:08:16   conferencing you don't have a plug-in

00:08:17   area

00:08:19   the movie is a great solution to that

00:08:21   yep so you know it might go to a

00:08:24   conference instead of having my nice

00:08:25   thin iphone I've got a big fat iphone

00:08:27   with the case right and that's like yeah

00:08:30   people don't really talk about that but

00:08:31   that has you know it's just a different

00:08:32   solution you either you either have to

00:08:34   carry around a second battery which were

00:08:36   you know be smaller than a mophie but

00:08:38   the movie has you know the benefit of

00:08:39   being the case if you want to use a case

00:08:41   that will protect the phone a bit and

00:08:45   it's you know in the case of the the

00:08:47   last movie that I had which was kind of

00:08:49   a not there's a super thin one and then

00:08:52   there's like a state more standard

00:08:53   thicker one that's like a charge an

00:08:55   extra charge and a half so it's even

00:08:57   better than having a secondary battery

00:08:59   which would only be another one charge

00:09:01   right and you don't have to power your

00:09:04   phone down to swap it out and I don't

00:09:07   know every time I test one of these

00:09:08   other phones and I have to like a lot of

00:09:11   these some of the phones even come

00:09:12   without the battery in it and you have

00:09:13   to go yeah most likely uh what was the

00:09:16   most recent 1i have is the galaxy nexus

00:09:21   s and that back you know they get

00:09:23   probably the next to scout the Galaxy

00:09:25   Nexus I mean yes our galaxy nexus the

00:09:27   back is awful

00:09:28   it's like oh I've got it right here and

00:09:29   just took it off and I had every time I

00:09:31   do it I feel like I can't believe that I

00:09:33   didn't just know it feels it's like

00:09:35   ripping off a sturdy band-aid band-aid

00:09:38   that's been like solidified by something

00:09:40   like popping or like the kind of

00:09:42   band-aids they give you at a at a

00:09:44   hospital

00:09:45   you know like that like induct industry

00:09:47   industrial-strength band-aid

00:09:50   yeah I can't believe I'm not breaking

00:09:52   off those little flimsy side hinges when

00:09:56   I'm taking everything apart now I think

00:09:58   it's a good solution but it is true

00:10:00   though that when they change the

00:10:02   yeah the form factor you're in that were

00:10:04   in this like limbo right now I don't

00:10:05   have any extra juice

00:10:07   I wonder if someone will make candy if

00:10:10   the adapters come out first get a a

00:10:13   30-pin to lightning adapter and stick

00:10:16   that in there most control and kinda you

00:10:20   know balance the the iphone 5 within an

00:10:23   old movie just about the top on or

00:10:25   something like that

00:10:26   yeah I don't know so i figured that and

00:10:31   i think the shining we can easily fill

00:10:33   the whole show with this there's no

00:10:34   reason for us to rehash our reviews of

00:10:37   the the iphone or iOS 6 I thought you

00:10:40   know I think everybody's going to read

00:10:41   them

00:10:42   why don't we take questions we can

00:10:44   answer you know talk about stuff that

00:10:45   maybe we didn't address yep and i said i

00:10:48   got we have plenty of questions on

00:10:49   Twitter we could go through i have one

00:10:51   for you though and I didn't see anybody

00:10:52   ask it and it's one of those things that

00:10:54   maybe doesn't occur to people because I

00:10:59   didn't never really occurred to me until

00:11:00   i started reviewing these phones but the

00:11:05   first 1i got to review before it came

00:11:07   out was the the verizon iphone 4 and

00:11:11   then I got the 4s last year and that

00:11:16   question didn't come up with those

00:11:18   because they were visually identical to

00:11:20   the iphone 4 on AT&T that was already up

00:11:24   before so i could just sit there and use

00:11:25   it in public and nobody would ever think

00:11:27   about right but I wondered with this one

00:11:29   whether they were going to give us any

00:11:30   rules on where we can take it out what

00:11:34   we can do and they didn't really yeah

00:11:36   says there was more rules about what you

00:11:39   can but it was mostly about sharing

00:11:40   photos it seemed like because there

00:11:42   would be the the kind of the data

00:11:44   attached to it we're going to tell

00:11:46   potentially that it's a different type

00:11:48   of coming from a different type of

00:11:50   advice but yeah there were there were no

00:11:53   really no rules about that you know i

00:11:55   was obviously that you told to kind of

00:11:56   be careful and not show it to anyone

00:11:59   besides you know your significant other

00:12:01   family if you're living at home but ya

00:12:05   know and this is it makes testing a kind

00:12:09   of tricky for you know one day I took it

00:12:11   out to take a panoramic picture to try

00:12:14   and test that out

00:12:15   I made sure to go to a secluded area you

00:12:18   know kind of far away where no one could

00:12:19   possibly tell when I was actually using

00:12:21   to take take the thing with and a few

00:12:24   times you know I just have it in my hand

00:12:26   in my pocket kind of be using that the

00:12:28   earpiece for like streaming music if I

00:12:31   was trying to do that i really wasn't

00:12:34   secretive about it i just used it

00:12:36   whenever I would use an iphone i didn't

00:12:38   try to cover up the back or anything and

00:12:39   nobody said anything and I think in

00:12:42   general it looks enough like the iphone

00:12:46   4 and 4s that I I can't even imagine I

00:12:50   think you'd have to be really really in

00:12:54   tune

00:12:54   yeah you have to see both you know

00:12:57   someone who's watching apple news

00:12:59   closely and closely enough to know

00:13:00   exactly what this new device looks like

00:13:02   what's exactly different about it and I

00:13:04   think the back is different enough to

00:13:06   like for example today you know the

00:13:07   first day we could kind of walk around

00:13:09   just normally with it i was using it on

00:13:12   the the kind of community here and

00:13:16   definitely getting a bunch of looks like

00:13:18   but San Francisco is also a place where

00:13:20   you know tech-heavy crowd especially in

00:13:23   between where i was going to the soma

00:13:24   area so definitely got that was a god

00:13:27   but I bet that's very different than

00:13:28   yeah yeah it would be it would be pretty

00:13:30   dangerous i think to try and you know

00:13:33   walk around just with it out before the

00:13:36   before the reviews come out because I

00:13:38   think someone would you know figure out

00:13:40   what you're doing and I do i I walk

00:13:44   around the city and i use it but I

00:13:46   really do try to be cognizant while I'm

00:13:49   walking and using my iphone of that

00:13:51   whole issue of you know somebody walking

00:13:54   by swiping it out of your hand and

00:13:56   taking all right I all I do I mean I you

00:13:58   know I'm sure that there's times when i

00:14:00   get engrossed in what I'm looking at the

00:14:02   where where maybe I'm susceptible to

00:14:04   that but I'm with this 1i was so super

00:14:06   paranoid depressed because I just all I

00:14:09   could think of is how awful that phone

00:14:12   call would be and i'll bet Apple would

00:14:13   be really nice but

00:14:15   it's like that's a phone call you do not

00:14:17   want to make now is haha which makes it

00:14:20   all the more incredible that it was an

00:14:22   apple engineer who you know is the one

00:14:24   is of of someone losing it

00:14:27   we're at a bar yeah like there is no way

00:14:30   that i want to be that guy no definitely

00:14:32   not

00:14:32   yeah i think that i think i think i

00:14:34   tested the the iphone 4 so that was

00:14:37   slightly different and significantly

00:14:38   different but people that already you

00:14:41   know kind of seen it because the Apple

00:14:43   engineer collected in the bar right yeah

00:14:46   and the other thing too and I mentioned

00:14:49   this on the show I think with molt's two

00:14:52   weeks ago and again I don't think I'm

00:14:56   spilling any secret but to my knowledge

00:14:58   nobody none of the people in the press

00:15:01   get seeded with a review unit until

00:15:04   after the event

00:15:06   yes as far as i know is trill but but

00:15:10   you know like I saw Pogue coming out

00:15:13   before me I mean so you know I mean just

00:15:15   don't think there's anybody in the list

00:15:17   higher than pose right you know and it

00:15:20   just makes sense and that's what you

00:15:21   know we all had six days everybody who

00:15:23   got a review unit got it last wednesday

00:15:25   after the event or later

00:15:26   yea though I don't know if I'm you know

00:15:29   just thinking about this remembering it

00:15:31   differently but it seems to me that you

00:15:34   know back in the day when maybe even the

00:15:36   first iphone reviews are coming out and

00:15:38   stuff

00:15:38   there was a obviously they had a

00:15:40   different kind of crew some of the same

00:15:42   people pogin mossberg i'm sure you know

00:15:45   had their review units but i think that

00:15:47   is smaller you know crew of people

00:15:50   reviewing it and even they do now and I

00:15:53   want to say that they had it for a

00:15:56   longer amount of time but that was also

00:15:58   a kind of a weird situation because that

00:16:02   first one of course they unveiled in

00:16:04   january and that didn't launch until

00:16:06   June yeah that's a good question i

00:16:10   wonder when those original iphone review

00:16:12   unit went out yeah i think they had them

00:16:14   for a longer time but maybe I'm wrong

00:16:15   about that I i think they might have to

00:16:20   and I know that Apple i know that there

00:16:22   was a lot more

00:16:23   hand holding the internet maybe not

00:16:26   handling is wrong term but that like I

00:16:29   help like the one that the guys who

00:16:32   lived in New York who got them i know

00:16:33   Steven Steven Levy was one that there

00:16:36   were Apple engineers who went to New

00:16:38   York for the period with the entire

00:16:40   period of the review in case something

00:16:42   he encountered any kind of problem or

00:16:44   anything like that yeah and remember

00:16:46   there were there was like pictures i

00:16:49   think there's a picture of steve jobs

00:16:50   like a little league baseball game using

00:16:52   it

00:16:52   no as soccer soccer yeah I know that's

00:16:54   right it's terrible that I even

00:16:55   recognize the soccer but you know so he

00:16:58   had no problem using it out in public

00:16:59   because again it already been unveiled

00:17:00   funny that it is one of the best

00:17:04   pictures i can remember of jobs because

00:17:07   it really seems like over the years

00:17:09   there were very few like casual pictures

00:17:12   of him in his private life yeah and you

00:17:14   know it's to the credit of the tech

00:17:15   industry that it's nothing like

00:17:16   Hollywood where there's any kind of a

00:17:18   paparazzi culture right and who else

00:17:22   would they really be I mean jobs maybe

00:17:24   that's why is that jobs may be the only

00:17:26   guy who in the history of silicon valley

00:17:27   who if there had been a paparazzi

00:17:29   industry people would have found it

00:17:30   right it was just a guy is just another

00:17:32   guy at the soccer game and there's a

00:17:34   picture of Steve Jobs using an iphone

00:17:36   before the iphone right right

00:17:39   the ultimate humble person I gotta put

00:17:43   that in the show notes so yeah I I book

00:17:49   i tried to go through and put a lot of

00:17:50   questions coming at us I tried to

00:17:51   bookmark a few of them as well but i

00:17:53   know you went through and start some of

00:17:54   your your favorites because he's been

00:17:57   coming in for a couple hours now so I

00:17:59   think you know the first thing we should

00:18:00   probably address though is the is the

00:18:03   map situation because as expected that's

00:18:05   another thing that everyone is talking

00:18:07   about right now and then some people are

00:18:09   up in arms and your dash disposed

00:18:10   there's there's one on techcrunch that

00:18:12   even have any red yet but it's a it's

00:18:14   pretty you know scathing review of of

00:18:17   what's going on with the map situation

00:18:18   so which probably and heels was pretty

00:18:21   good and his example is pretty pretty

00:18:23   damning where he lives in Manhattan and

00:18:25   searched for

00:18:26   something-something Lexington and it did

00:18:29   came up it as whatever lexington avenue

00:18:32   in brooklyn

00:18:33   yep which is really really a bad guess

00:18:35   and it is exactly the sort of thing that

00:18:39   google is good and not just maps but in

00:18:41   anything we're just with a little bit of

00:18:44   contact right of hey you're in manhattan

00:18:46   and if you're searching for some number

00:18:50   Lexington you almost certainly mean

00:18:52   lexington avenue in manhattan right and

00:18:55   it's because they have years and years

00:18:57   worth of data now to show exactly what

00:19:00   people are likely to be looking for

00:19:02   based on not only you know search

00:19:05   queries but location of that an apple is

00:19:08   is new to this so that's a that's going

00:19:11   to be one of those unfortunate kinda

00:19:12   early road bumps which you know is

00:19:15   something that I you have to imagine

00:19:17   will get better of course it will

00:19:18   um but yeah that's that's gonna be a

00:19:21   really annoying thing have you run into

00:19:23   any anything like that any any major

00:19:26   issues like an in Philadelphia's it is

00:19:28   or is it really you know what in bed

00:19:31   testing it out day-to-day in philly I

00:19:33   just walk everywhere

00:19:35   ninety percent of the time and it's been

00:19:37   fine yep and it's you know it's good but

00:19:39   it philly is like Manhattan into grid

00:19:42   city so it's really really it's not a

00:19:44   stress test for mapping it's not like

00:19:47   Boston we did the driving did I use the

00:19:51   term by term on saturday morning and he

00:19:53   had we had to go over to New Jersey

00:19:55   because my wife was raising funds for

00:19:57   this charity walk and we have to get

00:19:59   there in New Jersey is kind of notorious

00:20:01   notoriously bad driving State and be

00:20:04   number one that people who live there

00:20:05   just awful drivers and yeah i know that

00:20:08   you know there's people who live in New

00:20:09   Jersey who listen to the show but you

00:20:11   guys you guys know it's true you guys

00:20:13   terrible that I and it's it's a

00:20:18   turnaround state where it almost

00:20:20   everywhere you're never allowed to make

00:20:22   a left turn you've got to go past the

00:20:24   intersection and go to a turnaround

00:20:26   right so that you're making a right

00:20:28   right a right to make a left which is

00:20:30   why in my opinion everybody in New

00:20:32   Jersey is a terrible drivers because

00:20:34   they never learn how to make it

00:20:35   after and it is the turn-by-turn

00:20:39   directions were great until the very

00:20:40   very end and then it just sort of but

00:20:43   it's like got us really close and we

00:20:46   there's no way to actually turn on the

00:20:48   road we wanted to me and I think what

00:20:50   happened is it got confused by the whole

00:20:51   turnaround thing like it did I think it

00:20:54   put us right where we wanted to be but

00:20:56   on the other side of the road and it was

00:20:59   you know we just kind of had eyeball it

00:21:01   from there

00:21:01   you know like like a bunch of monkeys

00:21:04   who don't even have you know computer

00:21:06   and driving instruction right like the

00:21:09   old days right

00:21:10   I so that was the one that was one

00:21:12   hiccup but other than that it i haven't

00:21:14   run into it but i'm not really a heavy

00:21:16   maps user I wasn't sure how else to test

00:21:19   it i mean i type some things in

00:21:20   philadelphia i type you know how to walk

00:21:23   to city hall and it you know gave me

00:21:25   exactly the right directions to City

00:21:28   Hall

00:21:28   yep yeah and i am i'm pretty much the

00:21:31   same way I views i use the driving

00:21:33   directions once we were at a wedding

00:21:35   this weekend and we kind of used it to

00:21:36   get there and work perfectly

00:21:38   I was you know really happy with the way

00:21:40   it worked especially you can go you know

00:21:43   going to other apps and do something and

00:21:44   it keeps learning you when when it needs

00:21:47   to alert you and it's great that works

00:21:48   lockscreen great so that's great that it

00:21:50   works horizontally as well as vertically

00:21:52   and as I had no problem with any of that

00:21:54   it was also you know the maps themselves

00:21:56   were pretty good in here in carmell

00:21:58   which is a less populated area than san

00:22:00   francisco and i was able to find you

00:22:02   know these small little restaurant so

00:22:03   we're going to it all seemed to be there

00:22:05   and and work just fine to get us to

00:22:07   those places

00:22:08   san francisco have used it on a pretty

00:22:12   good amount of times now the one thing I

00:22:14   haven't tried too much is the the immune

00:22:17   system here that's not because I don't

00:22:19   think that you know i just i think that

00:22:22   the meat system itself kinda sucks and I

00:22:24   don't I never use google maps for it

00:22:26   because it's just hard to know if the

00:22:28   media is actually working on that day

00:22:30   and they have pretty bad data sharing

00:22:31   for that kind of information and so

00:22:34   that's the thing that has everyone up in

00:22:35   arms are one of the major things that

00:22:37   have as everyone up in arms as well is

00:22:39   of course the the public transportation

00:22:40   stuff and apples said they're going to

00:22:43   partner with third-parties on it i think

00:22:45   some of those are starting to go live

00:22:47   I don't

00:22:47   I don't think that they were alive they

00:22:49   work they certainly weren't live leading

00:22:51   up to the reviews i looked for a few

00:22:52   things and nothing was was ready to go

00:22:54   yet just said it was kind of a blank

00:22:56   screen in the transit area

00:22:58   yeah same with passbook yeah I actually

00:23:01   hear that I got some us i got them to

00:23:03   send me some demo things for passbook

00:23:05   right before the thing and that's the

00:23:08   network seems to work well and I think

00:23:09   some of those apps are going live right

00:23:11   now too but the transit stuff is

00:23:14   problematic though I've already someone

00:23:18   you know buzz Anderson actually tweeted

00:23:20   out earlier to look at this app called

00:23:23   transit which i just downloaded and this

00:23:26   thing is pretty slick-looking it updates

00:23:28   in real-time

00:23:29   it's optimized for the iphone 5 screen

00:23:31   already I mean this looks this i'm going

00:23:36   to get a lot of shit for this but this

00:23:37   looks better than anything in the

00:23:40   transit aspect of google maps that i was

00:23:44   using previously within ios5 and before

00:23:46   that so you know and as it work across

00:23:49   cities right now it's you know it's just

00:23:51   kind of locating you and it's located me

00:23:54   in san francisco and it's showing me the

00:23:56   nearest bus routes and its hiding 32

00:24:00   more just in case i want to search for

00:24:01   something then you can also search I

00:24:04   could try like looking up New York but

00:24:07   you know it's San Francisco is at San

00:24:09   Francisco only or would it work in other

00:24:10   major cities i believe it works in every

00:24:12   major city is and it's actually using

00:24:14   it's powered by four square data which

00:24:16   is sort of interesting huh that's

00:24:18   interesting

00:24:18   yeah because that's the one that I was

00:24:19   wondering how this is gonna play out and

00:24:21   I know that it you know there is no

00:24:24   worldwide standard for public

00:24:26   transportation sharing and at some of

00:24:28   these even know that public

00:24:30   transportation and you'd think that they

00:24:32   would be obligated to sort of make it a

00:24:35   somehow share the data right that

00:24:37   there's some you know proprietary honest

00:24:39   as who's got the data and stuff like

00:24:41   right and there's all kind of different

00:24:43   kinds of systems and they don't talk to

00:24:44   each other even in San Francisco there's

00:24:46   like two or three different systems

00:24:47   caltrain barred community and to you too

00:24:50   Google's credit they it was a mountain

00:24:52   of work to just sort of a encapsulate

00:24:55   all that in practice and another you

00:24:58   know there's there's a bunch of other

00:24:58   apps that are

00:24:59   that are have been out for a bit or

00:25:01   coming out soon that are kind of using

00:25:03   city-by-city different variations of the

00:25:06   map so you download a specific after New

00:25:08   York City you download a specific map

00:25:10   for San Francisco for Los Angeles

00:25:12   whatever so i'm not sure just because

00:25:15   this one is is located just 22 where I

00:25:18   am but this this looks pretty good you

00:25:22   know so i think it remains to be seen

00:25:24   how well it will integrate within maps

00:25:26   itself and if it's a if it's worth

00:25:30   getting up in arms about right now

00:25:32   you know it's it's definitely understand

00:25:35   where the rage is coming from because it

00:25:37   is something that at least on the face

00:25:40   of it looks like Apple is taking a step

00:25:43   backwards and people are going to be

00:25:44   upset about that from a functionality

00:25:46   standpoint but everyone i think you know

00:25:48   knows why it's happening at all and I

00:25:51   think you made this point earlier that

00:25:52   we don't know for sure that it was all

00:25:54   just Apple wanted to do it maybe there

00:25:56   was some negotiation between between

00:25:59   Google as well and and they just decided

00:26:01   to part ways

00:26:02   I heard something to that effect you

00:26:04   know just just kind of a one source

00:26:06   thing but something along those lines it

00:26:08   wasn't all that different from the

00:26:09   YouTube situation i actually after i

00:26:12   wrote that today I had a little birdie

00:26:13   tell me that I that was roughly in the

00:26:16   in the ballpark and that's not to say

00:26:18   that it's entirely google's fault it's

00:26:20   just that there were negotiations yes

00:26:22   and that where Google was coming from

00:26:24   Apple was not it really was not

00:26:27   satisfactory so what if there was any

00:26:29   sort of debate within Apple about

00:26:31   whether their own mapping stuff was

00:26:32   ready to pull the trigger on this year

00:26:34   or do they need another year that that

00:26:37   the stance with google made it worse and

00:26:40   nudge them more in that direction yeah

00:26:42   like I don't think that it was I don't

00:26:44   think it was cut and dry in any way I

00:26:46   don't think it was cut and dry in terms

00:26:48   of where Apple felt their own mapping

00:26:50   tech was I don't think it was cut and

00:26:51   dry like Google's demands were simply

00:26:53   untenable but it definitely was a mixed

00:26:58   bag like that

00:26:59   yeah that's essentially the same exact

00:27:01   thing that I heard and so that I mean it

00:27:05   is what it is

00:27:06   there's there's no question that this is

00:27:08   going to get better over time I'm I'm

00:27:10   right because it gets better by

00:27:12   collecting

00:27:12   usage data right and that's why and just

00:27:14   like with Siri or Siri got better so

00:27:17   they kind of had to release serie as a

00:27:19   beta 2 early like not good not right

00:27:22   because it needed the millions of people

00:27:24   using it to get better with the

00:27:26   aggregate data the big difference though

00:27:28   is that Siri wasn't replacing something

00:27:30   up right where as apples Maps are

00:27:33   replacing a mapping system that was

00:27:34   really yeah and i know you highlighted

00:27:37   earlier and uh then I did later as well

00:27:40   the SKA trapper was talking a bit about

00:27:42   the flip side of this which is

00:27:43   everyone's overlooking but it's also the

00:27:46   reason why this is probably more of a

00:27:48   mutual thing too is because this is

00:27:50   actually really bad for google as well

00:27:52   because they're losing tens of millions

00:27:54   of devices that were sending them data

00:27:56   and and perfecting their mapping system

00:27:58   and that's all going out the window now

00:28:01   it's not just the maps app itself it's

00:28:02   also the sdk stuff so all those apps

00:28:05   that were using the the Google Maps SDK

00:28:07   which are now switching over to Apple

00:28:08   maps I mean google can't be happy about

00:28:11   losing that data that's those are that's

00:28:13   this is valuable information that they

00:28:14   no longer have yeah and even so even the

00:28:17   other thing too and I you know I'm not

00:28:19   trying to save rod you know the new maps

00:28:21   is all a big bag of candy but there's

00:28:24   definitely some good stuff in there like

00:28:25   the graphics are much improved and

00:28:27   they're based on it not just in terms of

00:28:30   graphic design although that's better to

00:28:32   they just look better but now they're

00:28:34   very right so they scale better

00:28:36   whereas before it was all a bunch of

00:28:37   bitmaps and if you zoom dinners and dad

00:28:39   you had to redownload a new set of tiles

00:28:42   because it was all bit maps google has

00:28:45   vector images from apps but withheld

00:28:47   them from Apple Apple you know didn't

00:28:49   get those right now they have them

00:28:51   because they have their own tiles right

00:28:53   and it's definitely better when you do

00:28:54   pinching and zooming out it's better

00:28:57   yeah I so and the app is better the app

00:29:00   is actually been much just in terms of a

00:29:03   stepping away from the data right

00:29:05   mapping that it just the interface of

00:29:06   the app itself is really nice

00:29:08   yeah I mean I'd I've I as i said in in

00:29:12   my review of it huh

00:29:13   you know it's it i don't think that it's

00:29:15   as good yet as as Google Maps previously

00:29:19   was but I don't think it's that big of a

00:29:21   deal and I know that people are going to

00:29:23   be up in arms about it because it's a

00:29:25   change and everyone

00:29:26   it's up in arms about pretty much every

00:29:27   change and there's no question that it's

00:29:29   a status lights up backwards but I don't

00:29:32   know how the actual regular general

00:29:35   public will feel about this so right now

00:29:37   we're still in the phase where it's

00:29:39   mostly you know the the tech community

00:29:40   and the you know those the surrounding

00:29:43   areas that are downloading iOS 6 today

00:29:46   and are experiencing it for the first

00:29:48   time in getting all up in arms but when

00:29:50   regular people start to use this it's

00:29:52   not clear how much help view it as a

00:29:54   downgrade or if they'll really even care

00:29:55   if they'll notice the differences I mean

00:29:58   I you know obviously people use transit

00:30:00   a lot will public transportation and

00:30:03   will but uh overall i don't i don't know

00:30:05   I I just don't think it ends up being

00:30:07   that big of a deal like three months

00:30:09   from now

00:30:10   yeah I don't think so either we'll see

00:30:12   it's definitely something I think

00:30:13   everybody's going to keep their eyes on

00:30:14   and I also don't think it's something

00:30:16   that Apple is in any way under

00:30:18   estimating yeah I don't think they were

00:30:19   like oh yeah we'll just switch maps i

00:30:21   mean i think they realized that this is

00:30:23   this is a pretty big deal similar to the

00:30:27   move from doing everything tethered over

00:30:30   USB to your computer to iCloud right now

00:30:33   that if people are going to start

00:30:34   trusting their backups to iCloud apple

00:30:36   took that you know it has to work i

00:30:38   think very surgeons and I think in

00:30:39   hindsight it's worked out very well yeah

00:30:41   your con another thing before we get to

00:30:44   the the reader questions just a couple

00:30:45   of notes i had it really stands out to

00:30:47   me today that and just you know I'm sure

00:30:49   there's somebody somewhere had a problem

00:30:51   downloading and upgrading to iOS 6 but

00:30:53   it seems like again it was another major

00:30:55   update that rolled out really really

00:30:58   smoothly and nobody else in the industry

00:30:59   is getting updates i like yeah we're

00:31:02   here is the day the OS comes out and

00:31:05   everybody who wants it can just go get

00:31:07   it over the right eye was even i was i

00:31:09   was at home earlier before i had head

00:31:11   out for the day for my meetings and

00:31:13   debating whether or not to update my

00:31:16   iphone 4s which I had an updated yet I

00:31:19   didn't even have it on the beta on any

00:31:21   of the beta builds of the virus six and

00:31:23   so I just was like well let's just see

00:31:24   how it works i don't see much meet many

00:31:26   people complaining about on twitter and

00:31:28   took 10 half an hour total between all

00:31:30   the reset center and installing and

00:31:32   downloading and and then resetting and

00:31:34   it worked fine was great

00:31:37   yeah i did the same I had mind i did my

00:31:41   iphone 4s on the eight through the ADC I

00:31:44   did the i put the GM build on a couple

00:31:47   days ago or but when i started testing

00:31:49   the iphone 5 so that I could do that if

00:31:52   I did anything side-by-side it would be

00:31:54   the same OS on both yep but i did my

00:31:56   ipad just like a normal consumer today

00:31:59   and it couldn't have been easier

00:32:00   I mean is just tap tap and then you know

00:32:03   next thing you know I'm update and one

00:32:05   nobody else gets I mean android users

00:32:07   dream of something her height and wave

00:32:08   and I think they've been promising it

00:32:10   for a couple years and I just never

00:32:12   seems to quite get come to fruition one

00:32:15   other nice thing that I noticed up with

00:32:18   see the iOS 5 iOS 6 update on the 4s was

00:32:21   you know so i have used that that device

00:32:23   for a year now I had a lot of kind of

00:32:26   saved history within within maps for

00:32:28   things i was searching for it really

00:32:29   it's saved all that stuff even though

00:32:31   it's a completely new app completely

00:32:33   redone they were able to pour all of

00:32:35   that saved information including my

00:32:37   searches you know that I was doing a few

00:32:39   days ago are all still right there which

00:32:41   was and even though the search field

00:32:44   itself was still populated with the last

00:32:45   thing that I had searched for in the old

00:32:47   version of maps that's pretty impressive

00:32:49   interesting

00:32:50   yeah NSA I didn't notice that yep that's

00:32:52   pretty smart which is another 1i have

00:32:57   design sort of all over the map here but

00:32:58   I'm interested because you had the black

00:33:01   the iphone 5 i've got the white one

00:33:04   do you agree that blacks look a lot

00:33:07   blacker on screen

00:33:08   oh yeah yeah yeah I also think and just

00:33:11   looking at the picture you posted in

00:33:13   your your review on techcrunch when the

00:33:15   screen is off it looks like black is

00:33:17   blacker yeah so I'm looking at it right

00:33:20   now

00:33:20   you really can't tell where the screen

00:33:24   starts until you tilt it a little bit

00:33:26   into a bit of light and then especially

00:33:30   with the so it just on the just on the

00:33:33   main screen the lockscreen you've got

00:33:36   the the black along the top the black

00:33:38   bar with the the carrier in this case

00:33:40   verizon and the the battery indicator

00:33:42   and it's pretty close to what the with

00:33:45   the face of the of the actual phone is

00:33:47   it's a

00:33:48   and I think you hit on this in your

00:33:50   review that with the letterbox apps you

00:33:55   don't think you think you might not be

00:33:57   able to tell where kind of the the face

00:33:59   of the iphone ends and where the the

00:34:02   letterboxing begins and that's really

00:34:03   true especially you know part of it is

00:34:05   because of the colors and the the light

00:34:09   of the of app itself but it almost just

00:34:13   looks normal it looks like you're using

00:34:15   an iphone 4s it's just kind of centered

00:34:18   in the middle of a of the slightly

00:34:19   larger device

00:34:21   yeah it definitely sticks out on the

00:34:23   white one yeah the letterbox apps really

00:34:24   it just looks a little off

00:34:27   yep i don't but again i don't think that

00:34:30   should keep anybody who wants to buy the

00:34:32   white one from behind the white one

00:34:33   because I mean I mean literally today I

00:34:35   think I've had 50 app updates

00:34:37   huh yeah i think i'm down to one app

00:34:40   that I use on a daily basis that hasn't

00:34:42   been updated yet for the new screen

00:34:44   yeah I simple no I talked to a developer

00:34:45   earlier who had updated right before the

00:34:49   rollout and just said super easy as long

00:34:51   as as long as the as long as your app is

00:34:54   doing something that's kind of a linear

00:34:56   timeline based thing I mean you're

00:34:58   almost of these already have scrolling

00:35:00   built-in so all they're doing is just

00:35:01   showing more of that screen so it's a

00:35:04   really easy I i wrote yesterday when I a

00:35:06   link to the new netflix app and i called

00:35:08   it weak sauce that it wasn't updated yet

00:35:10   and and I got some flak from people

00:35:12   saying come on give these guys a break

00:35:13   the thing was only announced six days

00:35:15   ago

00:35:15   yep and so maybe that weak sauce is a

00:35:19   little bit harsh but the thing that I

00:35:21   noticed those that i was already getting

00:35:22   updates from other apps that supported

00:35:25   it and Ron the fact that netflix plays

00:35:29   video video really is the one I would

00:35:31   say it's the one thing that benefits the

00:35:33   most from the new screen size because

00:35:35   it's you know right 16 tonight I mean

00:35:37   that's the single biggest reason I think

00:35:39   to go 69 this video playback and what's

00:35:41   the one thing you use the netflix app

00:35:43   for video playback and netflix went out

00:35:45   of their way that they can test or

00:35:47   whatever but it doesn't seem to have

00:35:48   stopped anybody else like you said I'd

00:35:49   you know I can't speak firsthand

00:35:51   I don't have it

00:35:52   app in the App Store but doesn't seem

00:35:54   like it was hard then all of the apps

00:35:56   that I've tried so far that bet claim

00:35:59   compatibility in the release notes every

00:36:01   single one of them works just fine i

00:36:03   haven't had a single app that says that

00:36:04   it works on the iphone 5 screen that

00:36:07   doesn't for some reason and remember

00:36:09   that i don't have those developers have

00:36:10   actually seen most of them have not seen

00:36:12   even the iphone 5 they're doing it

00:36:14   purely off of the the emulator so right

00:36:17   and yeah netflix obviously knows that

00:36:20   they had in their notes like coming soon

00:36:22   you know support for for the iphone 5

00:36:25   i'm also you know along those lines

00:36:27   it's pretty sad that Twitter released a

00:36:30   huge update yesterday and could not add

00:36:33   in support for the iphone 5 I mean it

00:36:37   maybe it was coincidental maybe they

00:36:38   were targeting that day before I mean

00:36:40   they couldn't have known when the

00:36:41   reviews are going to come out or you

00:36:42   think they wouldn't though they are

00:36:44   built into iOS I mean they do work with

00:36:46   Apple closely and so how can Apple not

00:36:49   giving the heads up like a on this day

00:36:50   you know make sure your app is is kinda

00:36:52   ready to go and then just adding a kind

00:36:56   of fuel to the fire tweet but of course

00:36:58   comes out with one that's right the

00:36:59   update that's perfect

00:37:01   so did Twitter later new and I'm just

00:37:04   bike when I almost took the screenshot

00:37:06   and then what I should have and could i

00:37:08   would have had to hold it until after

00:37:09   the embargo is over but I had an update

00:37:14   yesterday where there were three and

00:37:15   only three apps that had been updated

00:37:17   and it was swimming so poetic it was

00:37:19   Twitter later new tweet bot and Twitter

00:37:23   and it was the to third-party clients

00:37:25   that updated to support the new screen

00:37:27   size and Twitter that didn't write which

00:37:29   is yeah i mean to be a student is waste

00:37:32   of oxygen and there is facebook did not

00:37:34   to push an update even with all their

00:37:35   new talk of native compatibility and the

00:37:37   new integration within ios6 they're not

00:37:39   still ready to go and they have a huge

00:37:41   team obviously but it's ridiculous that

00:37:43   Twitter put out a huge update 5 point

00:37:46   out they make a big deal about it and

00:37:47   they don't have it ready to go for this

00:37:49   now

00:37:50   alright let me take a break let me do

00:37:51   this first sponsor and for sponsor is an

00:37:55   iphone app called log your run all one

00:37:59   word log your run and it's an iphone app

00:38:01   for people interested in tracking any

00:38:03   sort of outdoor activity

00:38:04   it's developed by a guy named Tim

00:38:07   Westies is an indie developer and he's

00:38:09   been writing apps for the app store all

00:38:10   the way since 2009 and so update

00:38:15   speaking of apps that are on the ball

00:38:16   doing the right thing he worked hard to

00:38:19   have an update ready

00:38:20   the one that's in the app store right

00:38:21   now it's ready for the launch of the

00:38:22   iphone 5 i can vouch for it takes

00:38:24   advantage of the new screen size and an

00:38:27   email Tim tells me he lost seven pounds

00:38:29   just while testing it

00:38:31   the new version for ios6 so he uses it

00:38:35   takes advantage both of the iphone 5 the

00:38:38   new screen size and some of the new

00:38:39   features in iOS 6 and they've got some

00:38:42   new gps stuff that location stuff in

00:38:44   ios6 it takes advantage of the new map

00:38:48   api's more accurate location like Wi-Fi

00:38:52   location so it's really great perfect

00:38:56   for ios6 even better than it was before

00:38:57   on ios5 so what's the apt to well it

00:39:01   tracks or like a pedometer type thing

00:39:04   tracks how far you've gone and it also

00:39:06   has training programs that you can do

00:39:09   you can do stuff for like couch to 5k

00:39:12   you can train for a full marathon it's

00:39:16   even great though for stuff if you're

00:39:17   not like into running or jogging or

00:39:20   something like that it's great for just

00:39:21   logging walks like if you walk your dog

00:39:23   and want to see how far you go every day

00:39:25   it'll tell you how many calories you've

00:39:27   burned distance traveled time taken and

00:39:31   and to top it all off you can share the

00:39:34   data on Twitter or Facebook or and or

00:39:38   you can set up an account on log your

00:39:40   run dot-com and the data will sink to it

00:39:43   and so it's all backed up and you can

00:39:45   switch to another device plug in your

00:39:47   user account and all of the data you

00:39:48   used on your other device is right there

00:39:51   I really great app in the App Store 199

00:39:57   to box-to-box and you get this great app

00:40:00   you can find out more you can look up

00:40:02   log your run on the app store or you can

00:40:05   go to log your run dot-com check it out

00:40:08   how you know speaking of the third party

00:40:10   app that suit that's doing that

00:40:12   integration like they are how does how

00:40:14   does that look

00:40:15   I really haven't played around too much

00:40:16   with this

00:40:17   third party stuff so doing it through

00:40:18   the sdk I assume it's just kinda the

00:40:21   exact same maybe the hooks are the exact

00:40:23   same looks just looks great

00:40:25   yep just looks like them you know

00:40:29   look it's exactly what you think it's

00:40:31   just you know the new look with the the

00:40:33   new style maps yep nice so let's get to

00:40:37   some of these questions let me see

00:40:38   let's see what my favorites have I just

00:40:41   favorited a bunch of these questions I

00:40:44   lot of these we already covered or the

00:40:47   maps concerns real or just hyped fears i

00:40:50   think it's hyped right now it's its

00:40:53   overall but we don't think there is

00:40:54   something to really have to find out

00:40:56   more people started yeah I have one real

00:41:00   quick that wasn't that I didn't see

00:41:01   answered in any and things so someone

00:41:03   asked a lot for reading these to make

00:41:05   himself but Marcus squiggle asks the

00:41:10   keyboard in landscape mode so obviously

00:41:12   we have a larger screen now so how does

00:41:13   it handle that so I look I you know did

00:41:16   a little test with the 4s versus the

00:41:18   iphone 5 so it's actually the keys are

00:41:21   bigger they do make them a little bit

00:41:23   bigger so it should be easier to type

00:41:25   now in landscape mode that was

00:41:26   previously there's also some little bit

00:41:28   a sliver of kind of open room now on the

00:41:31   Sun either side of the keyboard and the

00:41:34   spacebar significantly larger than it

00:41:36   was on the floor s so yeah so they

00:41:39   basically just made the keyboard a

00:41:41   little bit longer including all the keys

00:41:44   obviously for when it's in a hole

00:41:46   vertical mode it's going to be the exact

00:41:48   same keyboard because it's the same

00:41:49   vertical with but yea landscape the keys

00:41:53   are bigger but they're not as big the

00:41:56   maximum size they could be that now sort

00:41:58   of like they figured out look here's the

00:41:59   big here's the widest it could be and

00:42:01   still be comfortable and it still

00:42:02   doesn't stretch to the whole side to

00:42:04   there's like some white space on the

00:42:05   left and right yep exactly

00:42:07   I never type that way do you know I

00:42:09   don't either

00:42:10   mostly i don't i don't use I use you

00:42:13   know the horizontal view for looking at

00:42:15   it at watching videos trying to think I

00:42:19   do I use it a lot actually on the ipad

00:42:21   especially now with this with the

00:42:22   logitech keyboard accessory constantly

00:42:25   in landscape mode but i don't use the

00:42:28   iphone all that much some games and some

00:42:30   videos it's pretty much

00:42:31   yeah same here do you have the same

00:42:35   problem i do with the letterbox taps

00:42:37   were typing his own yes keyboard yeah

00:42:39   raised i was glad you said that in your

00:42:41   review i didn't didn't really hit upon

00:42:42   that I i noted that it's hard to III

00:42:46   keep miss hitting on top when you know

00:42:49   I'm trying to scroll to the top because

00:42:51   i'm going i'm aiming kind of four right

00:42:53   below the ear piece and instead you need

00:42:55   to aim for the kind of where that the

00:42:57   time is so that's kind of screwed me up

00:42:59   a bit but yes also while typing with the

00:43:01   with the keyboard it when it's in a

00:43:03   letter letter box to app is a is

00:43:06   definitely a bit off i am especially

00:43:07   having problems with the lower left for

00:43:09   some reason I just yet

00:43:10   I same here to sing the same exact thing

00:43:12   here yeah like the shift key and I don't

00:43:15   know but again I really don't think it's

00:43:17   going to be a problem i really think

00:43:18   every app that I use on a regular basis

00:43:20   going to be updated probably by the time

00:43:21   this show airs yeah

00:43:23   yep totally Lex Friedman our friend Lex

00:43:27   Friedman asks when you run an older app

00:43:29   boxed is tapping the top of the iphone

00:43:32   screen scroll up there we go must you

00:43:35   tap the actual status bar yeah that have

00:43:37   to tap the status has to be the steps /

00:43:39   that's that's something i've also been

00:43:41   annoying to me

00:43:42   ng letterbox area is just a dead zone

00:43:45   there's it doesn't does nothing like it

00:43:48   doesn't even exist though as far as I

00:43:50   did you notice that when so when you

00:43:54   have a push notification that comes in

00:43:55   it goes down in that area and it

00:43:57   actually does not go over the Apple it

00:43:59   goes down perfectly into the space the

00:44:01   the black space above the app which i

00:44:04   think is no I I did not notice that and

00:44:06   as far as I can died can't say I read

00:44:08   every single review but i do believe

00:44:10   that yours is only when i read that

00:44:11   pointed that out so that's actually a

00:44:13   point to mg good observation i give you

00:44:16   I know I hadn't seen I thought that was

00:44:18   a it's a pretty nice touch of of of how

00:44:21   to do that because remember before when

00:44:22   people were talking about how they could

00:44:23   possibly do a longer screen

00:44:26   some people were mentioning that like

00:44:28   maybe they just do kind of notifications

00:44:30   in that area because right now it's kind

00:44:31   of just goes above the top of the app

00:44:34   and that's that's kind of what they

00:44:36   ended up doing for older apps is that

00:44:38   what happens with apps that aren't

00:44:41   letterbox though does this do they get

00:44:43   squished down

00:44:44   the letter they don't get squared

00:44:46   animations they get yeah it goes on top

00:44:48   you know it has that weird kind of

00:44:49   animation where it almost looks like

00:44:51   it's rotating in yea though maybe they

00:44:55   should have squeezed them down

00:44:56   presuming that they all support you know

00:44:58   there are no apps that support only the

00:45:01   big size right so they already have

00:45:04   those those uh those assets that they

00:45:07   need to get the size right don't know

00:45:09   what switching the assets would be like

00:45:11   but yeah I was always I've always been a

00:45:13   little I always thought there was little

00:45:15   strange how notifications kind of role

00:45:17   in on top of top of the apps but things

00:45:21   like when you're on a call or you have

00:45:24   something else you know you have skype

00:45:25   that's live it squishes everything right

00:45:28   it rather than kind of rolling down

00:45:30   rolling on top of it that actually

00:45:31   squishes whereas notifications just lie

00:45:34   on tops kind of a weird thing you know

00:45:37   and that brings to mind my least

00:45:40   favorite change in ios6 very least and i

00:45:44   find it almost baffling and Craig

00:45:48   Hockenberry and I talked about it a few

00:45:49   weeks ago he was on the show but i think

00:45:51   that segment got cut during the editing

00:45:53   process all sorts of good stuff gets cut

00:45:54   on these shows which is the new colored

00:45:58   status bar

00:45:59   oh yes yeah where it's some kind of

00:46:02   algorithm that the there you know and

00:46:04   and in all the built-in apps it's blue

00:46:07   right with where you can see it's like

00:46:08   if you open settings app you can see it

00:46:10   the open settings app instead of this

00:46:12   silver status bar wherever it used to be

00:46:14   silver and preview all previous versions

00:46:17   of iOS 6 like a platinum sort of color

00:46:20   now it's a it's a color that's computed

00:46:23   on the fly based on the color of the

00:46:27   status bar at the top of the screen so

00:46:29   in settings it's sort of a light blue

00:46:31   and in theory like an app like Yelp

00:46:34   where it's read it would be pink or

00:46:37   something like that so I i just opened

00:46:38   yelp it's not met yet but you're also

00:46:41   isn't optimized yet no I actually what

00:46:44   Yelp did done

00:46:45   no I think they did optimized but i

00:46:47   thought what I noticed was that Yelp

00:46:48   went with the black status Yelp is black

00:46:51   sorry right it's not right time so what

00:46:53   is it

00:46:55   it's soaked this to me is so confusing

00:46:57   and it's actually very disappointing and

00:46:59   almost a little concerning that this

00:47:00   that status bar color thing went through

00:47:03   the whole summer and nobody at apple

00:47:05   took it out because a it's ugly

00:47:10   it really is it it looks terrible i

00:47:12   think even when it's blue and other apps

00:47:14   that have custom colored status parts

00:47:16   which is a nice way and a common way for

00:47:18   apps to brand themselves you know like

00:47:19   some to do lap as instead of being blue

00:47:22   it's green right that's like their color

00:47:24   and Yelp clearly very branded with the

00:47:26   red netflix branded with red you know

00:47:30   that you use a good way to brand your

00:47:33   app right on these colored status bar

00:47:35   it's just ugly I really can't believe

00:47:37   that that they would do that and it's

00:47:40   like it's more complicated now it's like

00:47:42   why is it or the second reason why i

00:47:45   think it's a bad idea is that a colored

00:47:49   statusbar previously always had very

00:47:52   specific meaning right

00:47:54   yep i'm not going to say that it means

00:47:56   you're on a roll or green means there's

00:47:58   a phone call yep

00:47:59   Blue means you've got tethering on yep

00:48:02   and then a connection somebody's

00:48:05   connected with with what they call

00:48:07   tethering internet sharing or what

00:48:10   everything right but you're tethered and

00:48:13   you're in other words you're you know

00:48:15   you you don't want to accidentally leave

00:48:17   it on like I said marco arment at WWDC

00:48:20   had his macbook tethered to his iPad

00:48:24   because it was better than the hotel

00:48:26   Wi-Fi but I left it open when he went to

00:48:28   sleep and then itunes kicked in and

00:48:30   downloaded a new episode of mad minute

00:48:32   that's not hired her to get a lot so he

00:48:36   was out like 15 bucks it was like a

00:48:37   fifteen dollar extra charge for

00:48:39   downloading an episode was so you want

00:48:40   to know that though you want that blue

00:48:42   status information is important and

00:48:44   really recording another thing that is

00:48:47   that is that is actually tricked me i

00:48:49   look at this and i have mail open right

00:48:51   now and it looks like i'm tethering

00:48:52   because it's pretty much the same you

00:48:55   know it slightly differently and it's

00:48:57   not even like with the mail app so the

00:48:59   mail already has kind of this gradient

00:49:01   fade at the top of it going from kind of

00:49:04   a gray or or or white to a darker blue

00:49:08   and so it just doesn't really match the

00:49:09   this kind of muted blue that they have

00:49:12   along the the status bar just it just

00:49:15   doesn't look very good now really does

00:49:19   the black I think the ones that do black

00:49:21   look pretty good i wish they were just

00:49:23   going to the third reason that i find it

00:49:25   concerning is that the the the proper

00:49:28   solution was staring him right in the

00:49:31   face which is too

00:49:33   that's not you know it's not to say that

00:49:35   the status bar color rules from the

00:49:37   iphone didn't need to be changed

00:49:38   whatever I think they could have been

00:49:39   made better but that's what they should

00:49:41   have done is just copy the ipad where

00:49:44   here's the rules for the ipad status bar

00:49:46   if the status bar is visible it's black

00:49:48   ok that's it that's the rule there is no

00:49:52   colored status bar on the ipad that's it

00:49:54   it's always if it's there it's black yep

00:49:56   and that's it and it's great i think

00:49:59   that's what they should have done for

00:50:01   the iphone just make it black all the

00:50:02   time yeah it really does look better

00:50:03   when it is black so so what I think

00:50:06   developers should do because developers

00:50:08   get to choose you get in the old days

00:50:10   used to get to choose between the silver

00:50:11   one or the black one or not to have 1i

00:50:14   guess you could have like a clear one ya

00:50:16   like shows your wallpaper through the

00:50:18   through the back right is everybody

00:50:21   should just ask for the black one

00:50:23   yeah and and you know and wait for Apple

00:50:27   to get the hint and just you know in a

00:50:30   future update to iOS just make it black

00:50:32   for everybody and take out the whole

00:50:33   option

00:50:34   yeah but yeah maybe if I could change it

00:50:36   in any one app it would be male because

00:50:38   males the one app I use the most

00:50:40   we're that stupid blue status bars

00:50:42   staring and staring me right in the face

00:50:44   yeah it's pretty bad I'm trying to look

00:50:46   now to see if there are any others that

00:50:48   are better is glaring is as the blue

00:50:50   even like Apple's own even the music app

00:50:55   uses black now

00:50:56   alright yeah well I think anybody with

00:50:59   good taste wants the black one now right

00:51:02   I don't know because it was the Apple

00:51:03   should have done is just giving

00:51:04   everybody the black one

00:51:05   yeah yeah let's see next question is

00:51:10   when sort of open-ended

00:51:14   well let's take the first one ryan jones

00:51:16   has two questions first is are we now

00:51:18   convinced that they're going to stick

00:51:19   with a tick-tock strategy in other words

00:51:21   is next year's iPhone going to look just

00:51:23   like this one right

00:51:25   i would guess yes i would guess that the

00:51:29   next iPhone you know based on nothing

00:51:31   other than what they've done in the past

00:51:33   but i think i think they're pretty happy

00:51:36   with this design and I think they should

00:51:37   be I think they have every reason to be

00:51:38   pretty happy with this design so I you

00:51:42   know and love unless they're going with

00:51:43   something radically different i don't

00:51:45   know why they would necessarily change

00:51:48   this i'm trying to think if there's any

00:51:49   improvements they could do

00:51:52   of course you know there are

00:51:53   improvements they could do but is there

00:51:54   anything that uh that would constitute

00:51:58   kind of a lot of work being put in to

00:52:00   replace something that's that's a that's

00:52:02   pretty well done right now I i would

00:52:04   guess that I think unless something

00:52:06   turns up

00:52:07   yep you know like like all of a sudden

00:52:09   three months from now all of these day

00:52:11   one I phones like the glue starts coming

00:52:13   off for some right then they start

00:52:15   peeling apart you know

00:52:16   not unless there's something like that

00:52:18   some kind of technical problem that

00:52:19   comes up I i think they would because I

00:52:22   think it's Renee I think it's really

00:52:23   good and be i think that they appreciate

00:52:26   the way that they can benefit from

00:52:28   releasing a new phone that already has a

00:52:30   gazillion cases right and accessories

00:52:34   that that fit on day one you know one

00:52:36   thing that people have been saying that

00:52:38   I haven't noticed but I get that I've

00:52:40   got the question a few times is scuffing

00:52:42   on the back and so you have the white

00:52:43   one so it's silver mines the slate or

00:52:46   what Slater Slater whatever they're

00:52:48   calling it i haven't noticed that yet

00:52:50   but a few people have brought it up so i

00:52:52   don't know if that will end up being an

00:52:53   issue but that could be something where

00:52:56   maybe they you know reinforce or change

00:52:58   the coding on the on the aluminum of the

00:53:00   back if that really is an issue and that

00:53:02   remains to be seen and it wouldn't be

00:53:04   unprecedented make remember the first or

00:53:06   one of the first ipod nanos yes the

00:53:11   contractions yep some kind of plastic

00:53:13   that was bizarrely scratches all right

00:53:15   almost hard to believe that went through

00:53:17   testing

00:53:18   I haven't noticed it but I you know I

00:53:22   I tend to take pretty good care of my

00:53:24   iphones in general and I take extra

00:53:27   special care of these review units right

00:53:29   uh so I can't say that I've put it down

00:53:32   on any surface that i think would have

00:53:33   even scratched it but somebody told me

00:53:36   that and I didn't look but somebody told

00:53:37   me that in in gadgets photos of theirs

00:53:41   that they're black one looks like along

00:53:45   the Sham furred edge there's a word that

00:53:47   maybe even more in the last week then

00:53:50   then a rest of my life combined yeah

00:53:52   that you can it looks like the black is

00:53:54   wearing off and it's sort of silver I

00:53:56   heard that too i haven't seen the

00:53:57   picture yet myself either i had I don't

00:54:01   notice that though at least not yet and

00:54:03   I've been I just throw it in my pocket

00:54:05   like I like I do with all the phones

00:54:07   kinda I have no well I don't have my

00:54:10   keys in the same pocket so that wouldn't

00:54:13   do it but uh you know i'm not being

00:54:14   extra delicate with it I'd but I haven't

00:54:16   no I i don't think i am either and i

00:54:18   have not noticed any kind of scratching

00:54:20   my looks I think with a little rub on my

00:54:23   shirt here that it would look mint

00:54:24   condition

00:54:25   yeah so we do expect the tik tok to

00:54:29   continue then I want you to yeah I want

00:54:31   everything that it it really benefits

00:54:33   them economy of scale wise of course

00:54:37   though that just doubles down on all of

00:54:39   the oh my god this is so boring it looks

00:54:42   can't believe another year the phone

00:54:44   looking exactly the same right reaction

00:54:46   and kind of like I said I I think that's

00:54:48   in the same way that like the iphone has

00:54:52   been growing at this insane pace

00:54:54   year-over-year I think Matt a point

00:54:58   richmond i forget his name is a kid a

00:55:02   high school kid but I think he was the

00:55:03   first one to point out that but now

00:55:05   shoulders been saying it publicly that

00:55:07   every single generation of the iphone

00:55:09   has sold more than all previous

00:55:11   generations combined yeah thats such as

00:55:13   bizarre but it's just insane growth but

00:55:16   it explains why everything you know

00:55:18   surrounding apples financials have

00:55:20   exploded and rice five years on i think

00:55:23   that that chasm between consumers and

00:55:26   the as as Charles Arthur called them in

00:55:29   his review in The Guardian the digerati

00:55:30   yeah

00:55:31   that's grown too it's not like it stayed

00:55:35   the same its it growing you're over here

00:55:37   this sort of oh my god I can't believe

00:55:40   Apple has done that so but yeah and that

00:55:42   almost makes me think it's more likely

00:55:43   that they're going to stick with the

00:55:44   same design because what more would

00:55:47   drive those people ballistic next year

00:55:49   then if the new one comes out and looks

00:55:51   the same

00:55:52   I do wonder like do they stick with kind

00:55:55   of the 5s moniker though because like s

00:55:57   you know it's either stood for speed or

00:55:59   kind of cereal you could say last year

00:56:01   when I but it's like with this one this

00:56:04   is significantly faster than the 4s and

00:56:07   so it's like they're not calling it

00:56:08   though the 5s because it's just the five

00:56:10   and so it's like what what do they keep

00:56:12   the s up what do they do is the S

00:56:14   arbitrary you know like to call it the

00:56:17   5l for something else

00:56:19   how do they call it the 68 only think

00:56:22   they would it doesn't see it seems let

00:56:24   you know but you never know like they're

00:56:25   naming don't if there's anything that

00:56:27   the irrational about Apple it's the way

00:56:28   they named right right we were almost of

00:56:31   us that you know I think we've talked

00:56:32   about this previously that we're

00:56:33   everyone was kind of expecting at least

00:56:35   a few months ago that that would just be

00:56:37   called the new iphone because they would

00:56:38   go along the lines with the iPad because

00:56:39   it makes sense

00:56:41   it's just called the iphone on the back

00:56:42   you know they don't they don't make any

00:56:43   thing but it's you know for for

00:56:46   marketing everyone was already calling

00:56:47   it the iphone 5 why not call it the

00:56:49   iphone 5 it's what everyone understands

00:56:51   and what you know they already have all

00:56:53   this built-in hoopla around it so why

00:56:55   not go with that right now I'm not sure

00:56:59   I either

00:57:03   they could to you know I think that you

00:57:06   know if they wanted to they could have

00:57:07   and i know that it there it's different

00:57:09   than the iPad because with the ipad they

00:57:11   don't have this model where they keep

00:57:12   the old one around year after year

00:57:14   although the ipad 2 is still remember i

00:57:16   don't i don't think they're going to do

00:57:17   that next year right uh but i still

00:57:20   think though that even if they were all

00:57:22   if they just erase the four from the

00:57:24   iphone for any race the 4s from the

00:57:27   iphone 4s and just had these three

00:57:30   phones in their lineup free 99 and 199

00:57:34   299 399 they could still do it if they

00:57:36   just called them all iphone yeah I'm

00:57:38   just said that the newest one is the new

00:57:39   iphone and the other ones are just

00:57:41   called iphone and then you have to

00:57:42   figure out well for $99 you'll get a

00:57:45   quote iphone right it has these specs

00:57:47   drivers free you'll get one with these

00:57:49   specs and I sort of like uh I think

00:57:51   horse said you had a comment on a while

00:57:54   ago talking about well maybe they're

00:57:56   going maybe they're sticking with the

00:57:58   number because and while they didn't

00:58:00   with the iPad because the ipad if there

00:58:02   is an ipad mini through all of sudden be

00:58:04   two different kind of different devices

00:58:07   not just different excuse but to actual

00:58:10   different devices

00:58:11   whereas with the iphone there is no

00:58:13   iphone mini and it's kinda pointing to

00:58:14   the fact that there will only ever be

00:58:16   the iphone and not kind of so they can

00:58:19   keep going up and in numbers whereas if

00:58:21   you had the ipad 3 and then the ipad

00:58:23   mini and then you have the ipad for the

00:58:24   ipad mini 2 that gets pretty messy

00:58:27   obvious reasons but i don't know i don't

00:58:30   think that's the that's the the worst

00:58:33   theory in the world i have no idea

00:58:34   haven't selected or not

00:58:35   yeah it does right there is a question i

00:58:38   have had down with them calling the I've

00:58:40   pad that the latest iPad the new ipad is

00:58:43   let's say were the speculations right

00:58:45   and then an iPad Mini or an ipad air

00:58:48   whatever you want to call it comes out

00:58:49   next month october plenty of time for

00:58:53   the holidays

00:58:54   did they still call the new ipad the new

00:58:57   ipad even though it's not the newest

00:58:58   iPad because right and especially raises

00:59:01   I really makes me curious about what

00:59:03   they're going to call the thing and how

00:59:04   are they going to call that the ipad 3

00:59:07   as i call it after it's not the newest

00:59:09   iPad right and what and what if they do

00:59:13   upgrade the iPad as well with the new

00:59:14   dock connector

00:59:15   you know right at the regular-sized iPad

00:59:18   as well so yeah there's some branding

00:59:20   confusion potential there

00:59:22   yeah I wonder how they're gonna play

00:59:24   that but i'm not sure but I wouldn't you

00:59:28   know i'm i'm a lot more sure that well I

00:59:31   wouldn't say short but I would bet a lot

00:59:33   more money that next year's iPhone

00:59:34   whatever it's called is form factor

00:59:38   compatible with these then I am about

00:59:40   whatever the hell call it you know the

00:59:42   5s or something knew anything about

00:59:46   colors

00:59:47   they'll ever go colored they've

00:59:49   obviously gone that way with the ipod

00:59:51   touch this year they've gone you know

00:59:54   full-on into the you know color you know

00:59:57   wide range of colors five colors to

00:59:59   choose from I

00:59:59   choose from I

01:00:00   they could do it with the iphone but I

01:00:02   think that going with like five colors

01:00:04   that they wouldn't do that on day one

01:00:06   because they wouldn't want to try to

01:00:08   anticipate demand and have you know a

01:00:10   bunch of a bunch of yellow ones left

01:00:13   over and not enough black ones or

01:00:15   something like that right and it's

01:00:17   something that actually could help

01:00:19   could Apple everyone has talked about

01:00:21   this a lot but they're in this it's not

01:00:23   it's not a problem per se but it is sort

01:00:26   of a interesting situation where the

01:00:30   vacuum that's created when people know

01:00:32   that a new iphone is coming they just

01:00:35   you know people stopped buying them and

01:00:36   so that causes the because there's all

01:00:38   kinds of problems with the the quarterly

01:00:40   reports and causes problems on Wall

01:00:41   Street even though people should be

01:00:44   smart about this they're just not and so

01:00:46   if they did something like you know

01:00:48   halfway through the product cycle

01:00:50   release 35 colors whatever that could

01:00:53   help bolster those those those numbers

01:00:56   are just as a question of doesn't make

01:00:57   economic sense for them to do people get

01:01:00   up in arms because they just bought the

01:01:01   blue iphone and now the iphone 5s is

01:01:05   coming out

01:01:06   you know those types of questions in the

01:01:07   meantime no it is definitely an

01:01:09   opportunity for competing phone makers

01:01:11   to stand out i mean nokia clearly has a

01:01:14   minute haven't made any money on it

01:01:15   because it doesn't seem like many people

01:01:17   are buying Billy's branding wise they've

01:01:19   sort of position whose house is that the

01:01:21   colorful phone maker and then today HTC

01:01:24   launched a bunch of windows phones that

01:01:27   yeah I think they look good i'm at least

01:01:28   in the pictures although they do you

01:01:30   have seemed very very thick don't want

01:01:31   to get into a discussion of a phone i

01:01:33   haven't even touched but it does seems

01:01:35   right

01:01:36   seems like they're going thicker when

01:01:37   the market leader is just gone to dinner

01:01:40   than anybody and again I think you know

01:01:43   the case thing comes into play with the

01:01:45   iphone where is a lot of people still

01:01:46   use cases we'll see if that changes at

01:01:48   all with the iphone 5 but that's it

01:01:49   that's you know that's one way that

01:01:51   people customize it with their own

01:01:52   colors so back to the question is

01:01:55   Jeffrey been a via asks good question

01:01:57   should i upgrade to iOS 6 if on an

01:02:00   iphone four or 3gs maps don't have

01:02:04   turn-by-turn or 3d no sirree removes

01:02:08   google is it worth it

01:02:10   hmm that is a good question really is

01:02:12   i'll tell you one thing one reason i can

01:02:14   think of that you might want to i want

01:02:16   my advice would be to anybody in that

01:02:17   position would be wait wait and see what

01:02:20   people say because if it's determined

01:02:22   really slows those devices down you're

01:02:24   going to hear about it soon so i would

01:02:26   say a weight be the one thing that jumps

01:02:29   out is that it seems like apples really

01:02:32   improved WebKit performance again

01:02:34   because a non-tech linked to a thing

01:02:38   where somebody had posted the SunSpider

01:02:39   benchmarks of yes I've and out of

01:02:43   curiosity I ran it on my for ass after

01:02:46   upgrading to iOS 6 and the numbers i was

01:02:51   getting on the 4a swear way higher than

01:02:53   the ones that they had listed which

01:02:54   presumably were on the you know whatever

01:02:56   the latest version of iOS 5 where it

01:02:58   actually move the iphone 4s up to like

01:03:00   up from like I don't know somewhere in

01:03:02   the teens to like number six on their

01:03:04   list so it seems like web heart really

01:03:07   got a nice boost so that those numbers

01:03:10   for the iphone 5 aren't just because the

01:03:12   a6 cpu is so fast but that they've

01:03:15   actually improved javascript and HTML

01:03:18   rendering and in WebKit yeah and so

01:03:21   those are that type of stuff is going to

01:03:23   be stuff that comes out over the next

01:03:24   week or next two weeks where you see not

01:03:26   only javascript performance you see like

01:03:30   is camera performance better on those

01:03:31   devices is battery life better on those

01:03:34   devices as a result of iOS 6 so i think

01:03:36   yeah that's really how you have to weigh

01:03:38   this and you'll also hear more about if

01:03:41   people after all the this the kind of

01:03:44   controversy right now if people really

01:03:46   are annoyed with with the Newman's

01:03:48   product and and whether it's a it ends

01:03:51   up being in just a minute yeah kind of

01:03:52   yeah I'm and you know and it's in a way

01:03:55   that maps like i said is two steps

01:03:57   forward two steps back if you don't get

01:03:59   turn-by-turn directions or 3d it you're

01:04:03   missing some of the steps forward and

01:04:06   then you might really know if you're a

01:04:07   heavy maps user if you use your iphone 4

01:04:09   and you do use maps all the time you

01:04:11   really might also might want to wait and

01:04:13   see what other people have to say i

01:04:14   would definitely I would probably wait

01:04:16   and what if google just comes out with

01:04:18   their own maps and then that totally

01:04:20   negates that problem you know it doesn't

01:04:22   sound like that's gonna happen anytime

01:04:23   soon yeah I wonder about that Danny

01:04:25   Sullivan just had a thing i like to

01:04:27   before the show started where he got

01:04:28   like a sort of no comment from them

01:04:30   about that but I wonder what that means

01:04:32   that like because I if I were google and

01:04:34   you know i'm definitely not you

01:04:37   and we had a google maps app that we

01:04:40   felt like it

01:04:42   we're working on it but it's not ready

01:04:43   yet maybe another couple of weeks but

01:04:45   soon i still wouldn't say soon

01:04:48   I you know I think that the Apple

01:04:50   strategy of keep your mouth shut until

01:04:52   it's actually done done

01:04:54   war never lets it go and it's never

01:04:57   fails there's no reason to you know to

01:04:59   talk about it and say it's coming soon

01:05:02   if you're not a hundred percent sure but

01:05:05   so didn't write when all of this first

01:05:07   came out when iOS 6 was still in beta

01:05:09   and and everyone figured out what was

01:05:12   going on didn't someone at Google come

01:05:16   out and say something like we look

01:05:17   forward to having some mapping product

01:05:20   on for iOS devices in the future the

01:05:23   several months and already but i found

01:05:24   themselves something like that like post

01:05:26   do I can't i don't remember exactly

01:05:28   where but yeah after WWDC when it was

01:05:31   made official i remember something like

01:05:32   right so maybe he was just maybe with

01:05:36   someone speaking out of turn

01:05:37   or maybe you know maybe point plans have

01:05:39   changed who knows but yeah I think

01:05:42   you're right that if they're just not

01:05:44   saying anything about it now it doesn't

01:05:46   mean it could go either way but i do

01:05:48   think it's a different case than with

01:05:49   the YouTube app and and for a couple of

01:05:54   reasons for one thing I think that the

01:05:56   monetization strategy for YouTube is a

01:05:58   lot more obvious which is that google is

01:06:00   making money with pre-roll ads on

01:06:03   YouTube videos and now with the

01:06:06   standalone youtube app that you get from

01:06:08   the app store they're showing the

01:06:10   pre-roll ads whereas the whole built-in

01:06:13   youtube app from apple didn't do the

01:06:15   pre-roll ads so I i would I think google

01:06:18   is actually happy with this move like it

01:06:21   sounds weird

01:06:22   only that if you as a partner not an

01:06:26   apple you know you're not Apple but as a

01:06:27   partner that you would have

01:06:29   such an incredibly privileged position

01:06:31   as to have your app

01:06:33   well it wasn't their app but to have

01:06:35   your service featured as one of life 12

01:06:39   default apps even Twitter and Facebook

01:06:41   don't get pre installed by default you

01:06:44   would think you'd never want to give

01:06:46   that but because you didn't they didn't

01:06:47   have ads I actually think that they've

01:06:48   got to be delighted by this and totally

01:06:51   it was a loss right that's all it was

01:06:53   before and it's the number one free app

01:06:55   in the App Store and probably will be

01:06:56   getting so it's going well hide you know

01:06:58   especially as you know for the next

01:07:00   month or two as people update to iOS 6

01:07:02   and maps isn't it's not entirely

01:07:06   different from that because i don't know

01:07:08   if you ever noticed but it wasn't a huge

01:07:10   part like it's much bigger in the in the

01:07:12   in the YouTube situation but there were

01:07:15   sponsored event yes within within maps

01:07:19   and those were controlled by Google and

01:07:21   so Google was making money off of i

01:07:23   don't know how much I don't know if it

01:07:25   was you know any meaningful amount at

01:07:27   all but they definitely had sponsored

01:07:29   locations within maps on iOS and they

01:07:32   were definitely making money from that

01:07:34   and i'm surprised that google that app

01:07:35   allowing it i don't know you know why

01:07:37   they would or wouldn't I don't know what

01:07:39   those negotiations looked like but

01:07:41   they're losing money as a result of not

01:07:44   right

01:07:44   I it was like a different-colored search

01:07:46   result like you tell you in burger and

01:07:48   it was like a blue dot meant like

01:07:50   sponsored and red dots for you know that

01:07:52   the regular results something like that

01:07:54   so yeah there's that motivation but I

01:07:56   just don't think there's as much money

01:07:58   that it compels them to know it is i do

01:08:02   think that there's a competitive angle

01:08:04   they could take where if they would hold

01:08:05   it and have like a wait-and-see attitude

01:08:08   with apples built-in maps if if the

01:08:14   iphone gets a reputation as a crummy

01:08:16   device for maps it it works in Google's

01:08:19   favor if google maps is in the end I

01:08:22   think I think that's what the point of

01:08:24   that one of the techcrunch articles was

01:08:26   about that someone said basically you

01:08:29   should hold back for six months and just

01:08:30   see if Apple kinda buries himself up

01:08:33   with this move right like because you

01:08:34   know counter-intuitively it actually I

01:08:36   think it's more likely that they're

01:08:38   going to try to do their best on it

01:08:41   standalone google maps app the better

01:08:44   the built-in mapping is in iOS the worse

01:08:46   it is i think it's almost less likely

01:08:48   because it right right

01:08:52   it just helps it bolsters the android

01:08:53   case and there's never and you know I

01:08:56   warned Bricker a tweet today we're just

01:08:58   said that it makes them set this whole

01:08:59   map thing makes him sad because it's

01:09:01   like that the epicenter of the whole

01:09:03   like hypothetical what if google and

01:09:05   apple were still allies you know and

01:09:08   android google do what their best and

01:09:10   let Apple do it they're best at

01:09:11   imagine like how great of a Maps app

01:09:14   they could have after five years you

01:09:17   know if they were still singing Kumbaya

01:09:19   and have an eric schmidt come up onstage

01:09:20   during events and stuff like that

01:09:22   yeah and you could get you know

01:09:24   different better search results you can

01:09:27   have better tailored things just for the

01:09:28   iphone you get of all kinds of things I

01:09:30   wonder i'm actually gonna load it right

01:09:32   now to see how maps looks within safari

01:09:35   so you can still obviously they have a

01:09:38   tailored version of maps for safari for

01:09:42   iOS and let's just see how it looks when

01:09:45   asked to use your location of course

01:09:47   it's still they got a host ugly blue

01:09:52   they actually it's kind of funny they

01:09:56   have they have this white area at the

01:09:58   bottom for no apparent reason it's

01:09:59   obviously just not tailored yet for the

01:10:01   larger screen they just have this white

01:10:04   area right above the the bottom bar of

01:10:07   safari in between the map in the bottom

01:10:10   bar that's a they're clearly paying

01:10:14   attention here but it's fast it works

01:10:18   well you can pinch to zoom on

01:10:20   yeah so you know it's it's an option

01:10:24   it's a it's not ideal

01:10:28   perhaps but it's you know it's something

01:10:31   that works once once a google figures

01:10:33   out how to do a

01:10:35   custom customized for the the taller

01:10:37   screen i think it's something that

01:10:39   people could go back to I don't know

01:10:41   Anna it just seems to me like the I mean

01:10:45   we good for a quick look up i guess if

01:10:47   you're unhappy with what you got from

01:10:48   the maps app but right if it is

01:10:51   something we're looking for just was not

01:10:52   coming up you could always follow that

01:10:55   you're not gonna want something like

01:10:55   that for turn-by-turn now know his

01:10:59   question from brian no last name in

01:11:02   future iOS do you think the UI risks

01:11:04   growing stale and what features would

01:11:07   you like his suggestions are widgets and

01:11:10   Zephyr styles wipes don't even know what

01:11:13   that mean what does that mean that thing

01:11:16   when you swipe on the keyboard

01:11:17   I don't know I know I I but you know and

01:11:21   if you're used to it i'm sure it's

01:11:22   frustrating but i guess some people

01:11:24   swear by that we don't know its efforts

01:11:28   elsewhere but you know I definitely

01:11:31   would like to see kind of more maybe

01:11:35   taking more of a cue from some of the

01:11:37   things and in even windows phone where

01:11:39   it's like more live updating things

01:11:41   whether that's widgets or you know even

01:11:44   like the the weather app that showed the

01:11:46   the correct weather kinda like the

01:11:48   calendar does now it shows the right day

01:11:50   I do yeah I you know even if you just

01:11:52   like a dynamic icon

01:11:54   yeah that could be kind of cool beyond

01:11:58   i'm trying to think the icons are so

01:11:59   small that it would be hard to show

01:12:01   meaningful data but maybe you know maybe

01:12:04   rather than just having a red

01:12:06   notification dot maybe if you have like

01:12:09   a DM and Twitter there's like a you know

01:12:11   like a blue notification dot or

01:12:13   something slightly different so you know

01:12:15   like there's a difference between the

01:12:16   notification elements of it i think

01:12:18   there's there's a little bit of of of

01:12:19   wiggle room for things they could do

01:12:21   there but again it's hard

01:12:23   apple is not going to change the icons

01:12:25   themselves anytime soon i would imagine

01:12:27   so it's kind of hard you know do you do

01:12:30   like a for icon by four icon widget

01:12:33   thing I don't know yeah well I wouldn't

01:12:37   it wouldn't shock me and I think if they

01:12:39   did it would be something like that

01:12:41   where you could make a widget that's

01:12:42   defined as like some

01:12:45   array of of icons you know a two-by-two

01:12:49   somewhere or like you said like a four

01:12:52   by one line

01:12:55   yeah but I don't see them doing that I

01:12:57   think people under adding nerds tend to

01:13:00   underestimate the tremendous not even

01:13:05   appeal but almost the the comfort of the

01:13:10   the iOS homescreen simplicity that all

01:13:14   it is right as you know exactly what to

01:13:16   do all that it

01:13:17   these are your apps yep there's only one

01:13:19   place to go for apps and you know

01:13:22   there's no you know that whole

01:13:24   difference I think between the list of

01:13:26   your apps and your home screen android I

01:13:29   i think it baffles people i do it gives

01:13:31   me confused sometimes

01:13:33   yep but like you know that when you

01:13:35   delete something from your home screen

01:13:37   and not deleting the app you're just

01:13:38   leaving like an alias to the app and the

01:13:40   app itself is right and then just

01:13:42   swiping over and and then you get to

01:13:43   widgets and then you get to other types

01:13:45   of contents

01:13:46   I just think cannot underestimate how

01:13:48   comforting normal people find that the

01:13:50   root level of the device is so

01:13:53   profoundly simple and you know yet you

01:13:56   don't do do if do geeks suffer for that

01:13:58   because we can handle things like a live

01:14:02   updating sports widget

01:14:04   I guess so but I I i don't know i I'd

01:14:08   but they sort of have those widgets now

01:14:10   right in there just in the notification

01:14:11   screen so they've whether they have

01:14:13   stocks those are the two you know you

01:14:17   have to imagine that will come out with

01:14:18   more maybe you'll have a

01:14:19   i-don't-know-what trying to think of

01:14:21   what else you could possibly want you

01:14:24   know maybe even music player in there

01:14:25   but they already have that at the bottom

01:14:26   when you swipe to the left

01:14:29   I think it's a lot more likely that they

01:14:30   would open up widgets in the

01:14:33   notification center then widgets your

01:14:35   home screen

01:14:36   I don't think we're ever get widget on

01:14:37   the home screen yeah i agree with that I

01:14:41   also you know it's not really a UI thing

01:14:44   but i would love to see just the ability

01:14:45   to change the things like the default

01:14:48   camera so you know you can change it to

01:14:50   Instagram our camera plus or are one of

01:14:52   the other whatever your favorite camera

01:14:55   app is I don't know if they'll actually

01:14:57   do that but that's there would be a

01:14:58   small little thing

01:14:59   I'd like to see child yeah and along the

01:15:01   same lines being able to specify a

01:15:03   custom default calendar amp a custom

01:15:06   default am a music player everyone and I

01:15:09   think for a lot of people would be a

01:15:10   custom browser so you could use chrome

01:15:11   is your browser instead of safari that

01:15:14   would be in one containing me I think

01:15:16   ios7 one thing I definitely wish they

01:15:21   had still in safari is just the ability

01:15:24   to switch between tabs without having to

01:15:26   zoom out and kind of you know swipe

01:15:27   between them though the thing that they

01:15:29   doing so far I think it's much better

01:15:30   which is just kind of swiping from the

01:15:32   side and being able to quickly switch

01:15:33   between them

01:15:34   I like that that element a lot more me

01:15:37   to get breaking me do the second sponsor

01:15:38   and welcome back pics on the tour as or

01:15:45   some people call it Pixelmator as a

01:15:48   sponsor now Pixelmator as I'm sure

01:15:50   everybody knows is a great graphics

01:15:53   photo editing an image editor for mac OS

01:15:57   10 in the app store and they've got a

01:16:00   new version out today 2.11 sounds like a

01:16:03   minor upgrade but its bare with me in

01:16:05   the app store it's free upgrade for

01:16:06   everybody who's already already got

01:16:09   Pixelmator what they've got is they got

01:16:14   a brand new feature in the new version

01:16:16   and it's called the healing tool or it's

01:16:18   actually a much much upgraded version of

01:16:21   the healing tool actually brings us back

01:16:24   to we're talking about band-aid earlier

01:16:26   in the show

01:16:26   it's a little band-aid icon in the in

01:16:29   the toolbar

01:16:30   ah you rub the healing tool you take a

01:16:35   brush rub it over part of the image and

01:16:37   it just replaces if it identifies what

01:16:39   that is and replaces it but they they

01:16:42   have a demo video on their blog go to

01:16:44   pics on tor.com / blog look at the

01:16:46   latest post David demo video have to see

01:16:48   it to believe it what they've got is a

01:16:49   picture of woman laying on grass bunch

01:16:52   of balloons around her you use the

01:16:54   healing tool and rub it over one of

01:16:56   those balloons it gets replaced with

01:16:58   grass and it's all sort of seamlessly

01:17:00   mesh together so that it doesn't look

01:17:02   it's like the balloon wasn't even there

01:17:04   you could do with a brush you can do

01:17:06   with the selection tool select an area

01:17:07   of the screen invoke the healing tool

01:17:10   and

01:17:11   all it's like magic the magic feature I

01:17:15   I don't think there's anybody else in

01:17:17   the app store that has a feature like

01:17:19   this you've got to see it to believe it

01:17:20   go to pick some and tour.com / blog to

01:17:23   see the demo video just go to pick some

01:17:26   a tour dot-com to find out more about

01:17:31   the app it's just a fantastic app if you

01:17:33   don't have it in your absolutely nuts

01:17:35   unbelievably good app i actually use a I

01:17:40   don't know if it's picture

01:17:41   pixelmon towards with it later its pixel

01:17:43   maybe pronounce it is automated so I

01:17:45   figured line for time they sponsored the

01:17:47   show I I always thought it was

01:17:50   Pixelmator and somebody I don't know who

01:17:52   somebody convince me months ago and I

01:17:54   said that they're like no these guys are

01:17:55   from the Netherlands or something like

01:17:56   that it's pixel mentor is not really i

01:17:58   never knew that

01:17:59   so the first time they sponsored to show

01:18:01   i read it as pics on tour and then I got

01:18:03   all these emails from people saying odd

01:18:05   you know

01:18:06   great show but by the way you watched it

01:18:09   on their name and I asked them and they

01:18:11   were very very nice about it they said

01:18:12   they don't care how i pronounce it but

01:18:14   it's Pixelmator but now it's like a gag

01:18:16   and i don't i don't know which way to go

01:18:18   with don't know I don't know which way

01:18:20   to go

01:18:21   I don't know if I should run a gag and

01:18:23   keep mispronouncing it the John Gruber

01:18:24   where I should do it the right way but

01:18:26   just in case anybody's actually have

01:18:27   used it really is Pixelmator okay well I

01:18:31   like Pixelmator a lot actually use it a

01:18:33   pretty but that's like my go-to thing

01:18:35   now because I did I used to use

01:18:36   photoshop all the time

01:18:38   push-ups or overkill though i don't

01:18:40   really need to do any kinda major

01:18:43   professional editing to that extent with

01:18:48   PSD files so now i just use pretty much

01:18:51   Pixelmator for every little image tweaks

01:18:53   that i do and i didn't healing tool

01:18:55   thing you gotta see this video I mean

01:18:56   it's just mind-boggling I haven't tried

01:18:59   to like an indie developer shop with you

01:19:01   know two or three guys is just

01:19:02   unbelievable really check it out

01:19:04   that's really see any other questions

01:19:06   that's going to get a couple more

01:19:07   questions and you can wrap up the show

01:19:09   yeah I got one that I think I didn't see

01:19:12   anyone address probably someone address

01:19:14   this one of the reviews i've gotten

01:19:15   through all them quite yet but uh so a

01:19:17   nut media asks does the iphone 5 camera

01:19:21   take 32 or 16 by 9

01:19:24   photos and the answer is when you're

01:19:27   holding it in landscape mode it takes

01:19:30   about 32 photos

01:19:31   it's um it's a little bit tricky because

01:19:33   of course the screen is longer so you

01:19:35   wonder if it's taking these long photos

01:19:37   but they actually redid the camera so

01:19:41   you have a quite a large now photo photo

01:19:46   snapper area on the the right hand side

01:19:48   when you're holding it horizontally or

01:19:50   when you're holding it vertically it's

01:19:51   at the bottom but so you have a big

01:19:54   picture taking button now and it it

01:19:56   squishes the screen back to basically

01:19:59   the three by two Russian was what ends

01:20:01   up happening uh I thought the same the

01:20:04   end it's actually that the truth is that

01:20:06   it takes the exact same size pixels as

01:20:08   the iphone 4s I mean same number of pic

01:20:10   same exact pixel dimensions is the

01:20:11   iphone 4s yes the same demands

01:20:13   8-megapixel yep yep

01:20:16   and of course it's different if you do

01:20:18   the panoramic mode which is huge and I

01:20:21   took 1i I took one and stuck it in my

01:20:22   review and i had to shrink it down so

01:20:25   much because it ended up being like

01:20:26   something ridiculous like a hundred

01:20:28   thousand pixels by something else or

01:20:30   something like that and as I course had

01:20:32   to shrink that down to get it to work

01:20:33   but it's sort of interesting that the

01:20:35   only way to take those panoramic shots

01:20:37   is by holding it horizontally not

01:20:40   holding it

01:20:41   oh sorry by holding and vertically not

01:20:42   pulling your right it's counterintuitive

01:20:44   because you think well it's so super

01:20:46   wide the result that you're going to

01:20:48   hold the camera wide but if you think

01:20:50   about it actually makes sense because

01:20:51   they're going to stitch it together

01:20:53   anyway so why not get the the most

01:20:57   vertical data as possible as you're

01:20:59   shooting that so it actually does kind

01:21:04   of make sense but it is

01:21:04   counter-intuitive I think it also helps

01:21:06   you keep that can hold the camera

01:21:08   because the iphones I find ya always

01:21:10   find is easier to hold up and down and

01:21:15   it is totally nuh and especially now

01:21:18   that it's even thinner you're kinda you

01:21:20   know you're being very delicate with

01:21:22   your fingertips to hold it if you're

01:21:23   holding it in landscape mode

01:21:25   here's a quick question I've got this a

01:21:26   couple times is due folders fit another

01:21:29   row of icons

01:21:30   yes they do so instead of three rows of

01:21:32   icons you get four by four A and

01:21:35   older on the on the screen

01:21:38   yeah it's sort of funny in the reviews i

01:21:40   have read like no one really talks about

01:21:42   the the extra row of icons is being like

01:21:44   a big thing and you would you know when

01:21:45   you first saw the picture whoever i

01:21:47   think was 95 Mac you know actually got

01:21:49   figured out the correct code within with

01:21:52   an Xcode or whatever to make it do the

01:21:54   exiting and I was like the big reveal

01:21:55   because it showed that you're we're

01:21:58   going to get a bigger screen but no one

01:22:00   really talks about that anymore it is

01:22:01   nice it's nice to have an extra row it's

01:22:02   great to have an extra row within the

01:22:04   the folders themselves but I don't know

01:22:08   I i actually tweeted this out earlier

01:22:10   today I don't know I know you said in

01:22:12   your review that that you kind of your

01:22:15   kind of in-between thinking between the

01:22:19   which was better than the

01:22:20   three-and-a-half screen or the 4-inch

01:22:22   screen and I was you know I kind of

01:22:23   alluded to the same same I thinking of

01:22:25   it but now after using it now that I'm

01:22:27   out about using it and a nice switching

01:22:29   pretty regularly today since i upgraded

01:22:31   to iOS 6 on the 4s it's just like I look

01:22:34   at the 4s now after using the iphone 5

01:22:37   and it just looks like the short stumpy

01:22:40   slow younger sibling it reminds me of

01:22:44   the of the stumpy ipod nano for

01:22:47   something does it started i use the word

01:22:48   squat

01:22:49   yeah i also found and it's funny because

01:22:52   I spent all day yesterday really writing

01:22:54   that review i mean i was really in

01:22:56   writing mode all day long and just today

01:22:59   I realized that i've i've actually

01:23:01   suddenly subconsciously got developed a

01:23:06   new grip on the phone that does actually

01:23:08   notice that my nose done

01:23:10   like I called it a used the baseball

01:23:12   parlance like choking up like you're

01:23:14   choking up that applies i found myself

01:23:17   today I went out to to grab a sandwich

01:23:21   and i noticed i was reading checking

01:23:23   Twitter and without thinking about the

01:23:26   grip i noticed that I was doing it so I

01:23:30   do think that that's growing on me and I

01:23:32   know that when I spoke to two apple PR

01:23:36   and questioned it on day one when i got

01:23:39   it they said would you know give it a

01:23:40   week

01:23:41   yeah you know they've been carrying it

01:23:43   around for a while and that you get used

01:23:45   to you really do get used to it but they

01:23:47   totally understood that the that they

01:23:49   agreed that the first day if you are

01:23:52   like an iphone user daily it is

01:23:56   definitely it's definitely different

01:23:57   right

01:23:59   it's just you know it's long it's longer

01:24:02   so it is a different balance yeah you

01:24:04   are you know you're almost forced to

01:24:05   hold it differently chance to make sure

01:24:08   that it's going to be secure in your

01:24:09   hand up like it's going to tip over or

01:24:11   something

01:24:11   Michael Clements asks how has the

01:24:14   speaker improved or changed for the

01:24:16   iphone 5 any of proximity sensor issues

01:24:18   a lot of the iphone for proximity sensor

01:24:21   i've said i've noticed nothing I mean

01:24:22   that you know just seems to just I don't

01:24:24   understand why it starts to Speaker I

01:24:26   would say no change

01:24:29   yes I actually highlighted a different

01:24:31   different a sweet that was also asking

01:24:33   about the speaker i tried it out a

01:24:34   little bit right before we went on you

01:24:37   know 44 I assume we mean the speaker not

01:24:40   the earpiece for listening to to a phone

01:24:43   call but rather for kind of playing

01:24:45   music or playing a podcast or something

01:24:47   through and to that end I don't notice

01:24:50   any difference i think that it's pretty

01:24:51   pretty much the same if anything I feel

01:24:54   like the the 4s one may have been a

01:24:56   little bit louder at the same setting I

01:24:59   don't know if that's a if that's a

01:25:00   device change that's not that's

01:25:02   something else but maybe it's my hearing

01:25:04   is weird but in terms of the speaker for

01:25:07   listening to phone calls you know apples

01:25:09   made this big thing about how they have

01:25:11   all the noise can't save some noise

01:25:13   cancelling elements third microphone and

01:25:16   I didn't the third microphone right i

01:25:18   did a call and it seemed great

01:25:20   you know I don't matter honestly don't

01:25:22   hold the phone up to my ear that might

01:25:23   run away cause I do use the that your

01:25:25   buddy and I try to go

01:25:27   yeah I also think that and you know in

01:25:31   my week and I didn't do any kind of

01:25:33   specific testing on i do think that the

01:25:35   improvement i noticed last year in the

01:25:37   vibrator in the 4s have translated over

01:25:40   to this one it seems like that is really

01:25:42   i forget somebody explain the technical

01:25:45   difference and how they changed the the

01:25:47   vibrator in the 4s but it was all new

01:25:49   compared to the

01:25:50   before and I think that that this phone

01:25:52   has a really it's good one thing that

01:25:56   it's also different with apple and a lot

01:25:58   of these other companies and that Amazon

01:26:01   is one of them is amazon has gone with

01:26:03   the new tablets with stereo speakers and

01:26:06   they're bragging about it I i I've never

01:26:08   got a straight answer out of Apple but i

01:26:10   do get the impression that their idea is

01:26:12   that stereo speakers on these tiny

01:26:14   devices make no sense because that

01:26:17   they're too close you don't you know

01:26:18   there's no point having stereo speakers

01:26:20   that are right next to each other right

01:26:22   right there

01:26:23   you know there's that there is an ideal

01:26:25   space in between speakers for its for

01:26:28   you to get the full stereo effect of

01:26:30   something and how can they squeeze that

01:26:32   in to such a small and that maybe

01:26:34   there's an arguably there's some kind of

01:26:36   logic to having stereo speakers on a

01:26:38   tablet maybe on a big tablet but there's

01:26:40   none on a phone right and famously the

01:26:43   what you think our two speakers at the

01:26:45   bottom of your phone have never been to

01:26:46   speakers there's only one speaker right

01:26:48   you know you can replace the music

01:26:50   through speakers even cover up one of

01:26:51   that forget which side left to right but

01:26:53   cover up the one sec it's right on gets

01:26:55   blocked and they may they may the people

01:26:59   may actually recognize that now because

01:27:01   fine because the headphone jack is at

01:27:03   the bottom now it makes one of the

01:27:04   speaker's grills significantly smaller I

01:27:07   actually thought with my original iphone

01:27:09   i didn't know that I didn't know it

01:27:10   wasn't stereo i just looked and thought

01:27:11   there were two speakers and so I

01:27:13   remember I didn't go to the Genius Bar

01:27:17   specifically for that problem i went

01:27:18   there for some other problem with the

01:27:20   phone with the original iphone by stand

01:27:22   by the way it looks like one of my

01:27:23   speakers is blown out that goes now

01:27:24   there's this new speaker on that side

01:27:26   like oh it's not like that like a big

01:27:28   dummy like haha you they get people come

01:27:31   on as i do people come here all the time

01:27:32   about that that's funny you know one

01:27:36   other while we're speaking of the kind

01:27:39   of the bottom part of the device I've

01:27:40   noticed that i actually really like the

01:27:45   headphone tracking at the bottom I keep

01:27:47   trying to put it on the top when i first

01:27:49   go to plug-in because I'm just used to

01:27:50   it but i like it because it it seems

01:27:54   it's a much more natural flow from your

01:27:56   hand to putting the device in your

01:27:58   pocket because you don't have to flip it

01:28:00   around in order to do so

01:28:03   because you're holding it in your hand

01:28:04   and then I just put my hand kinda down

01:28:06   to my pocket area and then just like let

01:28:09   it drop in there rather than having to

01:28:11   kind of flip it around it and make sure

01:28:14   that the the the headphone jack is the

01:28:16   thing up so in other words i'm just

01:28:18   putting it in my pocket

01:28:19   autumn up rather than then top up and i

01:28:24   find that flow to be actually I i asked

01:28:26   about that change specifically and

01:28:29   sometimes you can ask and and they will

01:28:31   give you a here's what we were thinking

01:28:32   behind this change explanation yet

01:28:35   sometimes they want and I thought maybe

01:28:36   they would on this one because it's

01:28:38   obviously not this is not super

01:28:40   competitive you know I mean like they're

01:28:41   not going to tell you about the

01:28:43   processes behind how they manufactured a

01:28:46   little bit and drill the aluminum ounce

01:28:47   of my dad but I thought you know up or

01:28:48   down on headphones weed you know what

01:28:50   would be thinking about that and I got a

01:28:52   very polite and not answer but i think

01:28:56   that it's I think it's twofold i think

01:28:57   one is exactly what you said that if

01:29:00   you're going to be listening to stuff

01:29:02   while the phones in your pocket it makes

01:29:04   total sense for it to be on the bottom

01:29:05   because I everybody puts the phone in

01:29:07   top first right i mean does anybody put

01:29:10   the phone in the other way if they're

01:29:11   not connected the headphones i put the

01:29:14   phone entire first I don't so right

01:29:16   that's the old way if i did want to have

01:29:20   the headphones connected while the phone

01:29:21   is in my pocket i had to put the phone

01:29:22   into me upside down and i think the

01:29:25   other factor is and Schiller has alluded

01:29:29   to this i think in I saw somebody

01:29:33   talking about it but that and talking

01:29:35   about that the move from the old dock

01:29:37   connector to the new lightning connector

01:29:39   is that Apple had originally thought

01:29:41   that people would be using iphones with

01:29:43   docks where you would stick it in a doc

01:29:46   on a 30-pin connector and that's how you

01:29:47   would charge it you have a doc on your

01:29:49   desk and I think the original function

01:29:50   right right night I guess is that I was

01:29:54   stupid enough to buy this thing

01:29:58   I think you're right i think it did

01:29:59   that's a great point yet now no one will

01:30:02   be he's already have said right they're

01:30:04   not going to know they're not going to

01:30:05   do a dock and that did people you know

01:30:07   people that's not they've they don't

01:30:09   they don't use docs themselves and they

01:30:10   don't think customers to either people

01:30:12   just have cables and they lay the phone

01:30:13   on the donít flat on a thing and stick

01:30:15   a cable in there but when they thought

01:30:18   hey I think people are going to use a

01:30:19   dock with this then it made sense for

01:30:20   the headphone to be on top because you

01:30:22   know to be the only way you can access

01:30:24   the headphone yep

01:30:26   yeah that makes makes a lot of sense i

01:30:31   have a question here from a Jeremy

01:30:34   Collins who s there any other UI

01:30:37   improvements for taller screeners

01:30:38   limited to simply more information so i

01:30:40   think that's a good question because we

01:30:42   haven't really seen this yet aside from

01:30:44   the CNN app that was an open day which

01:30:47   of course was an open table sorry yes

01:30:49   but I'm both of those were the ones that

01:30:51   were showing off at the actual event as

01:30:54   a good examples of how you can use a

01:30:56   larger screen so for the most part that

01:30:58   the developers who have done app updates

01:31:00   today have just basically allows you to

01:31:03   see more of a of a listview because

01:31:06   that's like a pretty easy update to do

01:31:08   what CNN and open table are doing is

01:31:10   really kind of rethinking the way the

01:31:13   you I cannot can flow because you have

01:31:16   more screen real estate at the top and

01:31:18   bottom and I haven't had too much chance

01:31:21   to play with the CNN I app yet i opened

01:31:23   it earlier but it is really totally

01:31:25   different than it was before and I think

01:31:28   in a very good way so I'm pretty

01:31:30   interested to see how app developers and

01:31:32   abusing that extra real estate in a more

01:31:34   compelling way than just adding to list

01:31:37   him the one app and I I've gone back and

01:31:40   forth over the years between Calendar

01:31:43   apps on iOS I've I've daily you know

01:31:46   spent months with other one chance but

01:31:48   I've lately I've just been using that

01:31:49   the built-in one uh yep and it's a

01:31:52   really nice improvement there where you

01:31:54   can have month view and actually have a

01:31:56   reasonably sized list underneath that's

01:31:58   not to say that they redid they didn't

01:32:00   really redo the interface it's just that

01:32:02   there's an app where it really does make

01:32:05   a huge difference where before you only

01:32:06   had like one line underneath where is

01:32:08   now you get like three and a half

01:32:10   lines underneath you know so you can see

01:32:11   your day's agenda underneath the month

01:32:14   yep that's so much better than I can't

01:32:17   think of any other app though that is

01:32:18   specifically really different it's just

01:32:21   you know just more right

01:32:24   I wonder those you know new people start

01:32:26   to do maybe you incorporate some sort of

01:32:28   tray in that you know at the bottom or

01:32:31   the top kind of because you have the

01:32:33   more real estate there rather than what

01:32:35   you were doing before I don't know I

01:32:36   have no idea what they'll end up doing

01:32:38   but I would imagine that people will be

01:32:39   experimenting with that starting you

01:32:42   know soon as they get their hands on the

01:32:43   iphone 5 I would think so too i think

01:32:45   it's really nice for and just for the

01:32:48   obvious reason i said in my thing for

01:32:50   video but reading too

01:32:52   yep and I'll tell you which app it

01:32:55   really stands out to me is I books

01:32:58   because I've always thought that Apple's

01:33:01   designed for ibooks took away too much

01:33:04   space by keeping a like a chapter or

01:33:08   title at the top and the location thing

01:33:11   at the bottom where no matter how you

01:33:12   set it it didn't seem like you got a

01:33:14   comfortable amount of text on screen at

01:33:16   once whereas now you do it really makes

01:33:19   a big difference in that app and instead

01:33:21   the upper major sighting instapaper

01:33:23   always took greater advantage of the

01:33:26   screen space like when you tap to make

01:33:29   that the toolbar and everything go away

01:33:31   always use the screen rather than I

01:33:33   books does but it's really really nice

01:33:35   to have instapaper now on this on this

01:33:38   device

01:33:38   yeah and you get something like tech

01:33:42   named to just a web app you know just to

01:33:45   a web version of it

01:33:46   this is much better because you just

01:33:48   you're displaying so much more

01:33:49   information that's not a native app it's

01:33:50   just you know within within safari

01:33:52   itself but because safari now has so

01:33:55   much more screen real estate you know

01:33:56   one thing I I sort of wish they would

01:33:59   they would have borrowed the same thing

01:34:00   that they're doing now when you hold

01:34:02   safari up horizontally there's a new

01:34:06   button at the bottom to be able to make

01:34:07   the top and bottom fade away the top and

01:34:11   bottom bars but you can't do that in

01:34:12   vertical mode and I really wish they

01:34:16   would have done that you know there's

01:34:18   times when I'm just like scrolling

01:34:19   through a bunch of a bunch of

01:34:21   information like a technique for example

01:34:22   and I don't really need

01:34:23   even the both the URL bar and the the

01:34:27   bottom bar there so I wish they would

01:34:29   have brought that over to the vertical

01:34:31   mode yeah I i almost said I suspect it's

01:34:33   because they don't want to cram another

01:34:36   button there whereas when you're in

01:34:39   horizontal mode there's there's a lot of

01:34:41   room lot more room for a button but I

01:34:43   corrected doing everywhere it it makes

01:34:45   as much sense as if feature in vertical

01:34:49   mode is in horizontal mode and the other

01:34:51   thing right putting another button and i

01:34:53   don't know i know i'm not i don't want

01:34:55   to design the app for them but I do kind

01:34:56   of wish they'd figure out some way to do

01:34:58   it is iCloud tabs where yes I this is

01:35:06   one of my favorite features that Apple

01:35:08   has added across the system this year

01:35:10   and I really you know i was looking

01:35:12   forward to it getting all my stuff

01:35:14   getting all night computers on mountain

01:35:16   Lomax mountain lion and all my devices

01:35:18   on ios6 and it's great except that on

01:35:23   screen type a safari the the clouds you

01:35:25   just click that cloud button and there's

01:35:27   the list of them and on the phone and it

01:35:29   kind of got to go to bookmarks and then

01:35:31   go back to you got tabs and there it is

01:35:33   and it's you're never going to just

01:35:35   leave it there so you're like always

01:35:36   like three taps away from and it's great

01:35:39   on the ipad yeah because its exact same

01:35:41   way in the ipad where it's it's an

01:35:42   actual it's an icon but yeah it's buried

01:35:45   in the menu on and I think it's a great

01:35:46   feature i mean i am always thinking that

01:35:50   I've got this thing i was reading mg's

01:35:53   review of the phone and where is it i

01:35:56   thought i had it and it's because i

01:35:57   forget i was on a different mac or a

01:35:59   different device or whatever right

01:36:02   I'm you know I've got open tabs on every

01:36:04   device and I never remember which one

01:36:06   neuron and icloud tab is exactly what I

01:36:09   need

01:36:11   and while we're in safari someone else

01:36:14   brought up Brad being at being brad says

01:36:18   why does safari still have separate

01:36:20   search and URL field hate that so much

01:36:21   obviously apple just change this in

01:36:25   safari for OS 10 but it remains the same

01:36:29   in safari for iOS were they don't have a

01:36:32   unified search bar

01:36:35   and I don't know why that is except i

01:36:39   think it makes more sense on an iOS

01:36:41   device because you're touching something

01:36:44   you're going for a touchdown target with

01:36:46   your thumb rather than you know if

01:36:48   you're using tabs or the tab key or what

01:36:51   not to get it to kind of navigate around

01:36:52   or if you're using a you know your a

01:36:55   your finger to just navigate around its

01:36:57   it's sort of tedious to switch between

01:36:59   two different two different boxes up top

01:37:02   sort of redundant whereas because you're

01:37:06   touching it you can just kind of know

01:37:09   what you know what you want to hit

01:37:11   whether you want to hit the URL or the

01:37:12   search bar and it's the same thing

01:37:14   because it's you know it's always thumps

01:37:16   what is a good question my and I think

01:37:18   the answer is actually even more simple

01:37:20   than that I think it's because when

01:37:23   you're in the URL field they give you a

01:37:24   special keyboard that's optimized for

01:37:26   URLs with characters like are all ready

01:37:28   for Ash's and don't have a spacebar you

01:37:31   get a dot-com button him and I think

01:37:34   that's the explanation is that the

01:37:37   advantage of having one is there's a big

01:37:40   trade-off there where they would lose

01:37:42   the you'd only have the normal keyboard

01:37:44   whereas now you have this special you're

01:37:47   entering a URL keyboard which you would

01:37:50   go yeah so that's why I think I OS still

01:37:52   has the to field wouldn't be a bad

01:37:54   reference that makes sense and then you

01:37:56   know I mean as far as a bunch of

01:37:58   preferences they even to add a nigga

01:38:00   stash it in that not just in settings

01:38:03   safari go to put it all the way down in

01:38:05   settings safari advanced where they've

01:38:07   got the new right developer mode webcam

01:38:11   with the web inspector I put it in there

01:38:12   because the sort of people who really

01:38:14   want that room you know right i would

01:38:16   take people who wouldn't hesitate to go

01:38:18   three levels deep in settings to turn it

01:38:20   on but i think it would be a good time

01:38:21   great preference setting there's a then

01:38:25   there's the conspiratorial thought that

01:38:28   you know that would lead to more google

01:38:29   searches well I i see i don't think that

01:38:31   carries any water though because if that

01:38:33   were the case then they would have added

01:38:34   it to the mac version of Safari yeah

01:38:36   right i agree if trying to I think I'm

01:38:40   running out of questions here and i

01:38:41   think we're probably running at a time

01:38:43   but do you see any other good ones

01:38:46   someone lets the MIT rental a stem kinda

01:38:51   curious to hear our thoughts about the

01:38:54   rift in ios6 UI elements you know

01:38:57   between disposer drifted Apple between

01:39:00   the forestall and maybe Johnny I've or

01:39:03   whoever it is but basically with all the

01:39:05   scheme morphix stuff i think is what

01:39:08   he's referring to so some of the you

01:39:10   know the the the felt in in Game Center

01:39:15   and in that kind of thing

01:39:16   yeah the contentious theory on that is

01:39:18   that there's two camps inside Apple that

01:39:22   are sort of a pose where's the camp that

01:39:24   likes the sort of non skeuomorphic look

01:39:30   of apps like male safari and even new

01:39:34   updated ones like may music and the app

01:39:38   store and maps maps is another good

01:39:43   example where it's just like this sort

01:39:45   of pure chrome look versus the game

01:39:49   center calendar whatever I think there's

01:39:53   I think there's some merit to that from

01:39:55   what i've heard that there's definitely

01:39:57   people who are opposed to like the

01:40:00   calendar app on the iPad and a mac but I

01:40:04   don't think it's like you know like a

01:40:07   religious war or somebody really wants

01:40:09   to like you know it I know I don't think

01:40:13   it's like a problem like a like a sign

01:40:18   of internal division

01:40:20   well I mean it is certain

01:40:25   it's just I don't know everyone I talked

01:40:27   to doesn't seem to like the you know

01:40:30   either the felt or or any of the the

01:40:33   calendar stuff but Apple still feels

01:40:36   that go with it i mean it is that for

01:40:38   the don't know that that the common

01:40:40   person to feel like you know you're

01:40:42   replacing your calendar your desk

01:40:43   calendar with up with a version that's

01:40:47   like a digital representation outfit I

01:40:49   actually wonder how much of it and i

01:40:50   don't know i mean i think forestall was

01:40:52   probably a little bit on the

01:40:53   skeuomorphic side but I really think

01:40:55   that the leading proponent of it was

01:40:57   Steve Jobs personally and that you think

01:41:00   it's now that he's you know no longer

01:41:02   with us i think it's i think it's

01:41:03   starting to go away coming because

01:41:04   there's anything gone skeuomorphic since

01:41:08   Steve Jobs died i don't think so i think

01:41:11   everything everybody complains about was

01:41:13   already in place when Jobs was at the

01:41:16   helm right you know you can

01:41:19   it is there anything like passbook we

01:41:22   open it up here it's I think you know

01:41:24   they do pre and passbook though I really

01:41:26   do

01:41:27   I don't think I'm not working is not

01:41:28   close to it and in general I think like

01:41:30   passbook is probably a good example

01:41:34   where is my passbook and and while we're

01:41:37   talking about passbook you know someone

01:41:38   asked them how it actually works so you

01:41:41   know during the during my demo time

01:41:43   actually had apple send me some some

01:41:45   demo one since know the app for live yet

01:41:47   it's basically you can do it you can do

01:41:50   as far as i understand you can do one of

01:41:52   two things either apps after you you

01:41:54   know you buy tickets through

01:41:55   ticketmaster and then you get an email

01:41:57   and in the attached to that email is

01:42:00   basically a file which is a passbook

01:42:04   file and you click on it within mail-in

01:42:06   in iOS and then it just instantly loads

01:42:10   and that's what that's what i did it and

01:42:11   it worked you know within one second it

01:42:13   was a it was loaded into my passbook and

01:42:16   so that seems like a really great thing

01:42:18   I worry a little bit about right now i

01:42:19   have to give the eight different passes

01:42:23   in this thing and it's you know it's

01:42:24   getting a little crowded i don't know

01:42:25   how they deal with if you have a lot of

01:42:27   these things like so if you have a

01:42:28   starbucks card which is going to be kind

01:42:30   of an evergreen thing apparently that

01:42:32   you have in your in your wallet or or

01:42:34   the Starwood kind of one vs like a movie

01:42:38   too

01:42:38   which will go away after a time I don't

01:42:43   know how they deal with having so many

01:42:44   of those in there but you know i'm

01:42:46   curious to see how passbook gets adopted

01:42:48   they have a great group of partners it

01:42:50   looks like you know that i saw that a

01:42:52   eventbrite is going to be using it and

01:42:55   then obviously the ones that we've

01:42:56   already seen as the examples of a lot of

01:42:58   airlines using it to get pastor all

01:43:00   those kinds of things

01:43:00   majorly but I want to leave them MLB now

01:43:03   actually based only like three ballparks

01:43:05   right now but I mean I presumably that's

01:43:06   the sort of thing that might be tough to

01:43:08   roll-out midseason so maybe by next year

01:43:09   we'll have a lot more a lot more the

01:43:12   teams involved but you can buy tickets

01:43:13   in the app and it led i forget which

01:43:15   three ballparks it is but the tickets

01:43:18   you can put them right in your passbook

01:43:19   and then you know just show up at the

01:43:21   gate in the scandium someone asked and i

01:43:24   don't have this open and i think i just

01:43:26   saw it in passing I think they're asking

01:43:27   us that actually for the show like if I

01:43:30   don't know the answer to this and I

01:43:31   don't know if you will either but if you

01:43:34   need some sort of special barcode

01:43:36   scanner to be able to do it through the

01:43:38   iphone screen i think that there is

01:43:42   something to this question because I

01:43:43   think that I have gone to the airport

01:43:45   before and had it on the you know had a

01:43:48   ticket kinda just through the web

01:43:50   browser open to be scanned and it was

01:43:52   either QR code or barcode and they

01:43:55   couldn't scan it for some reason with a

01:43:57   regular bar code reader they needed a

01:43:59   special kind of barcode reader to be

01:44:00   able to do it i don't know if that's

01:44:02   because the pint glass if there's a

01:44:03   reflection problem or or whatever I

01:44:05   don't know if that's been fixed or not

01:44:07   have you heard anything about that now I

01:44:09   haven't heard anything about that i

01:44:10   thought that those yes scanners were

01:44:12   just like a diamond doesn't that they're

01:44:15   just red lasers

01:44:16   I don't know I don't know anything about

01:44:17   it maybe I'm maybe I'm remembering it

01:44:19   incorrectly but I think someone did ask

01:44:20   a question along these lines and it made

01:44:22   me remember back to this one time when I

01:44:23   just couldn't you know they could not

01:44:25   scan my thing because they didn't have

01:44:27   the correct scanner for it and who knows

01:44:29   maybe they had to our code scanner and

01:44:31   they needed a barcode scanner i don't

01:44:32   know maybe something as simple as that

01:44:33   but there might there may have been

01:44:34   something to the fact that you needed

01:44:36   special scanner and I don't know if

01:44:37   that's true or not

01:44:38   unfortunately we don't have an answer

01:44:40   but yeah overall I think there's also

01:44:44   talk that you can also download one of

01:44:49   the apps like the MLB app and those

01:44:51   could easily pass the the two

01:44:52   gets right into your passbook rather

01:44:54   than doing it over email and they

01:44:56   actually when you when you click on the

01:44:57   things themselves they all have these

01:44:58   little info in the bottom right-hand

01:45:01   corner things where you can click on it

01:45:03   they can't bunch of them have different

01:45:05   lockscreen Dana toggles and and the

01:45:09   ability to kind of location and those

01:45:12   yeah I'm with you though I'm I'm i I'm

01:45:14   optimistic but I'm curious as weather

01:45:18   like six months from now it's gonna be

01:45:19   one of those things were all of us have

01:45:21   passbook on our first screen and we've

01:45:23   all got like a thing in there too and

01:45:25   that's where all of our airline tickets

01:45:27   are going or his passbook going to turn

01:45:28   into one of those apps that did stash

01:45:30   into a folder and wish they would just

01:45:32   let you deliver right right and I know

01:45:35   you know there's a lot of the country

01:45:37   developers out there who are working on

01:45:38   kinda loyalty card aggregators and those

01:45:41   types of things who are working out not

01:45:42   integrating within passbooks oh yeah but

01:45:46   I do you know I just remember from WTC I

01:45:48   was one of the sessions I want to and it

01:45:50   really does seem like a very clever

01:45:52   system because it's very simple i mean

01:45:54   it's it really not a lot of work to hook

01:45:57   up to and yes and it does seem like they

01:45:59   thought it through very much so it's not

01:46:01   like a boil the ocean plan like the

01:46:04   whole NFC thing where involves well and

01:46:06   then millions of retailers will install

01:46:08   this hardware that perfect to our system

01:46:10   it's you know really largely based on

01:46:13   hooking up to these things at all these

01:46:15   retailers and gates at the airport

01:46:18   already have right is a huge difference

01:46:21   and that you know and the just doing it

01:46:25   smart with technology where with a few

01:46:29   cross into a certain geofence it will

01:46:31   pop up you know the airline ticket so

01:46:33   it's they're ready to go for you or and

01:46:35   it's on the lock screen even so you

01:46:36   don't have to actually dig through

01:46:38   anything to find it you know i think

01:46:40   that that's they make it pretty

01:46:41   compelling case for why like all the

01:46:44   airlines you get on board with this and

01:46:47   yeah I hope they do is a quick question

01:46:49   from spearheads he asked if you can

01:46:51   split the keyboard when you're in

01:46:52   landscape no you cannot and I don't I

01:46:54   wouldn't it was not enough for import I

01:46:57   don't think so

01:47:00   I don't know that that's it and to show

01:47:03   mg Siegler thanks for thanks for being

01:47:05   here
