The Talk Show

119: ‘Workin’ in Pajamas’, With Guest David Sparks

00:00:00   so this is the show you know alright David's parts was is this your first [TS]

00:00:07   time on the talk show I know it's kind of exciting it's very exciting that this [TS]

00:00:12   is the thing is the problem I want to have you on for a long time and the [TS]

00:00:14   reason I've put it off as I feel like it's going to take the entire episode [TS]

00:00:18   just to tell people everything you too busy guy John what you are prolific it's [TS]

00:00:25   you and Rene Ritchie and Jason Snell make me sick I feel like if I i feel [TS]

00:00:30   like i get to a Friday and I feel like you know a record a podcast I was pretty [TS]

00:00:34   good episode and I had one good article on during fire by my bed and then I look [TS]

00:00:38   at like would like some of you guys do anything else on like seventeen podcasts [TS]

00:00:42   he produces like sixteen of them you put out a book and the screencast and do a [TS]

00:00:51   podcast and keep it and Renee of course writes about seven or eight thousand [TS]

00:00:55   words week that they think it was the longest monk at one point who said it's [TS]

00:01:02   not the notes you play it's the notes you don't play right now so so you're [TS]

00:01:06   like me you know if the guy anyway the piks you are referring to his longtime [TS]

00:01:11   show Mac power users which you cause I believe from the outset with the [TS]

00:01:17   wonderful Katie for it yet and that is just moved as a tennis motivated me [TS]

00:01:24   because I you know somebody moves to show that god damn feed redirection it [TS]

00:01:29   never works right it's it's terrifying it is terrifying it's terrifying movie [TS]

00:01:34   show because your your listeners are subscribed to your feed best thing in [TS]

00:01:37   the world is when someone subscribe to podcast because there may be a little [TS]

00:01:41   bit of a commitment and then when you do your next episode that you're getting [TS]

00:01:45   pushed to them when they open their podcast app of choice or maybe their [TS]

00:01:49   podcast app pulls it down automatically be there it is and that's great and yeah [TS]

00:01:53   I know there's people who don't listen who don't subscribe to just wait and see [TS]

00:01:56   if it sounds like a good episode and then they just hit play and that's great [TS]

00:01:59   too love listeners but subscribers are the best because subscribers give you [TS]

00:02:03   consistency from week to week [TS]

00:02:05   and then when you move networks or you just even if you don't move networks if [TS]

00:02:09   you just do something behind seed change from you know WordPress to Squarespace [TS]

00:02:15   or you know something like that you have to change the feed something always goes [TS]

00:02:19   wrong and so yeah it was always my want to help people when they do stuff like [TS]

00:02:23   that get people to you know a double check if you are subscribed to Mac power [TS]

00:02:27   users go to the new site now the new site is there on the relay yeah we were [TS]

00:02:34   actually shutting down we we've had mac paris's dot com beginning which is kind [TS]

00:02:38   of funny thats back in like 2008 2009 we're starting the show we we're trying [TS]

00:02:43   to pick name of the show and you just search websites are used as available [TS]

00:02:47   that's a good name so we're shooting down the dot-com were gonna forward it [TS]

00:02:51   over to everything and related got a nice system over there so we can be [TS]

00:02:54   great where you want to go and listen to the show we will talk about it a bit [TS]

00:02:57   more too but it's real a dot FM / and P or time at Perry's rooftop Comedy so [TS]

00:03:05   really it's the first good yeah but I think I don't know how these guys got by [TS]

00:03:13   without me quite frankly I don't understand either I think it given by [TS]

00:03:18   the British accent thing my hand now it makes it sound you know he's not really [TS]

00:03:23   British you know he was born in New Jersey that's what I heard too and he [TS]

00:03:27   just like he likes to pronounce page funny you know and and people like that [TS]

00:03:31   so there in yeah and you know his name is spelled with a lie he made that up to [TS]

00:03:36   its also some kind of big iPhone cult and restrain their realize did you when [TS]

00:03:45   did he say to you in Katy started my power users 2009 so that's interesting [TS]

00:03:50   that's interesting in 2009 you still chose a name that starts with Mac yeah [TS]

00:03:56   well that was kind of the idea we it's kind of a cares about the stuff but like [TS]

00:04:03   every I like to tell us we are thinking about doing a podcast together and and [TS]

00:04:08   everybody we r macworld him you know everything that can be said about a [TS]

00:04:12   podcast has been said [TS]

00:04:13   and they're kind of right you know the great quickly does the news and such as [TS]

00:04:17   such and unlike you know I don't want to do something everybody else does so we [TS]

00:04:20   decided let's just not do it and we talked for like 45 months about what we [TS]

00:04:26   do and ultimately I said I want to make a show that talks about one thing the [TS]

00:04:29   show doesn't have anything to do with news just talked about how to get better [TS]

00:04:33   at email how to get better this or that and in cases like it's a great idea it's [TS]

00:04:38   good for like 10 shows it will be done I said well then we'll make ten really [TS]

00:04:41   good shows his 2009 so it's worked out and you guys have just hit at least and [TS]

00:04:48   and for your audience and probably my audience to its it it counts as a round [TS]

00:04:52   number you just finished episode 255 [TS]

00:04:56   so now you're just about to enter your your second bite into Dubai teenagers [TS]

00:05:02   now I mean we're not messing around and you know what they're splitting if we [TS]

00:05:06   cut stuff backed up we have so much we'll talk about it and I love it was [TS]

00:05:11   getting ready for this cause you know I'm also a lawyer which is kinda nuts [TS]

00:05:15   and like the whole morning doing lawyer stuff and just getting ready for this [TS]

00:05:17   call in like shutting down Microsoft Word and all the other stuff that it on [TS]

00:05:21   that part of my life I'm at felt great I love the word power user ID I think that [TS]

00:05:28   it like went full circle where in the early years of the PC revolution when [TS]

00:05:34   PCs were just grow and grow and grow and I mean let's just say he's a beast [TS]

00:05:39   through the mid to late nineties power user was used with no reservation in in [TS]

00:05:46   a Mac user PC world you know any of those magazines would talk about you [TS]

00:05:51   know tips for power users and yeah I think everybody hits nebulous lead to [TS]

00:05:56   find because it has to be there is no technical definition between you know as [TS]

00:06:01   somewhat informed user and a power user but I think everybody it fits a general [TS]

00:06:08   loose description of somebody who's who's truly an enthusiast really does [TS]

00:06:12   want to dig into some of the details but probably falls short of being like a [TS]

00:06:17   developer or someone who can write their own Co [TS]

00:06:19   code or or at least at you know if they do write code it's more like Automator [TS]

00:06:23   and Apple script and stuff like that it's it's absolutely aspirational for [TS]

00:06:29   our show and you know that you know the ideal nerd in my head is John Siracusa [TS]

00:06:35   and and the show's not for John Siracusa [TS]

00:06:38   we're not going to talk about program program talk and a lot of our listeners [TS]

00:06:42   it's kind of weird because our show has a big audience but it's not the usual [TS]

00:06:47   geeks listening to podcasts doctors business people you know single moms [TS]

00:06:54   people who just want to get better at this stuff so it's an interesting place [TS]

00:06:59   we occupy like somebody was telling me I forget who had a dentist dentist some of [TS]

00:07:08   my friends has a dentist but he's not from Max and so he's always kept his [TS]

00:07:12   practices you know he does all the idea staffers practice and has a couple you [TS]

00:07:17   know it's always been a Mac guy you know writes his own FileMaker stuff you know [TS]

00:07:21   to keep the practice and stuff like that but he's a dentist that's a full time [TS]

00:07:25   thing you know but he has made you know this little little system of stuff that [TS]

00:07:30   works exactly the way he needed for his practice that's a power user there's a [TS]

00:07:35   good chance he listened to our show we have a lot of dentists that thing we [TS]

00:07:39   knew we had its fine we have all walks of life but it's fun and with the Mac [TS]

00:07:43   there's so much you can do i mean what little automation tools you don't need [TS]

00:07:47   to learn to program if you get good at hazel or no keyboard maestro or even [TS]

00:07:52   just text expander you can like make so much magic happens we talk about that [TS]

00:07:57   stuff all the time it's fun I do think and I do think though and this is one of [TS]

00:08:00   the things i wanna talk about the same name the show Mac power users and I do [TS]

00:08:03   think I think that even though the naming Apple related websites Mac [TS]

00:08:09   whatever is probably be always was a bad idea in hindsight because something new [TS]

00:08:15   is going to come back it would have it would have worked out poorly two decades [TS]

00:08:20   ago if the Newton and really caught on but you know you harder to get [TS]

00:08:26   legal permission to use Apple the Mac even though Apple often neglected to Mac [TS]

00:08:30   whatever names for some years and in a kind of backed off that by with with the [TS]

00:08:35   target audience of your in Katy show I feel like it really does work as I think [TS]

00:08:39   it's harder to be the nature of Iowa and the restrictions of iOS make it harder [TS]

00:08:44   to be a power user on iOS and that's not that doesn't mean to say that you can't [TS]

00:08:48   be a mean there is text expander for iOS and then you can know about you know AB [TS]

00:08:53   psych Launch Center pro and more clothes yet workflow is another good example [TS]

00:08:59   drafts is probably like the power user text note type perhaps but to me it's [TS]

00:09:11   different I don't know why I do find it interesting because I certainly consider [TS]

00:09:15   myself to be a Mac power user right and you know BBEdit to me as I the canonical [TS]

00:09:21   Mac power user group as at their entire lineup is everything about their apps is [TS]

00:09:29   geared towards power users in my i mean not that you can I get a casual user [TS]

00:09:34   can't just start using some of their website you can just open on a liner and [TS]

00:09:38   just command and if you have any idea from fifth grade what an outline as [TS]

00:09:44   you'll be right at home but the whole reason that they're so successful they [TS]

00:09:48   can charge you know serious money for the app is that it's it's got so many [TS]

00:09:52   you know power user enters you can tweak it to make it like it only apps like [TS]

00:09:59   getting in on the up and just using in a box that like really digging in its [TS]

00:10:02   kinda like getting a Lamborghini and just driving and parking lots yes [TS]

00:10:06   there's just so much more thing yeah but your show doesn't the way we've dealt [TS]

00:10:12   with that is and I'd almost argue that you can get more automation stuff going [TS]

00:10:17   these days on iOS but you know it's it's still a journey but the way we've dealt [TS]

00:10:21   with on the shows we deal we still do shows entire shows on iPhone and iPad [TS]

00:10:25   and iOS related topics and we just kind of ignore a problem with the name and I [TS]

00:10:30   don't listen to him and we've got some other URLs and we've talked about it but [TS]

00:10:34   it's like you can I got a brand now and yeah I would love it [TS]

00:10:37   I would I wouldn't I wouldn't worry about it I think people understand and I [TS]

00:10:41   think I think the thing that makes it work is that the type of iOS users who [TS]

00:10:46   are gonna be listening are gonna be there there there PCs Mac to their not [TS]

00:10:50   windows people you know yeah that's the assumptions yeah I find it interesting [TS]

00:10:55   personally though because I still definitely consider myself a Mac power [TS]

00:10:58   user have a lot of custom modifications in a live paraphrase I'm told that that [TS]

00:11:05   power mile workflow for almost everything I do from email to especially [TS]

00:11:10   posting stuff today on fireball custom bookmarklets custom Automator services [TS]

00:11:18   that I've written flooding in a lot of the stuff I waited around the way I i do [TS]

00:11:22   mark down two points on that [TS]

00:11:26   to point out that there are one or more that you post when I used to I used to [TS]

00:11:31   post that stuff all the time and somehow gotten away from it and I realize I've [TS]

00:11:34   got like this backlog of what I think are some pretty cool shit and the second [TS]

00:11:39   thing is I will give you the microphone for as long as you want on my car uses [TS]

00:11:43   one day to come and just talk about the stuff we don't have to talk about any [TS]

00:11:46   news just tell us how you might be a good venue but I don't really use and [TS]

00:11:53   only do any of that type of stuff on iOS on iOS and I use my phone a lot and I've [TS]

00:11:58   been noticing it with the watch and we can get to that later in the show but I [TS]

00:12:03   have dan I have been running my phone down into the red a lot lately a lot [TS]

00:12:09   more than I was even just like six months ago but I don't really do [TS]

00:12:13   anything power usery on it I don't use any of those out and I don't use text [TS]

00:12:18   expander I don't use drafts I don't news I don't use long Center pro I don't use [TS]

00:12:25   workflow [TS]

00:12:27   loaded all of them and I've looked at them and I've appreciated them and I can [TS]

00:12:31   see why every single one of those apps has become ahead and has like a serious [TS]

00:12:37   enthusiasts following but they the way I use my iPhone it just none of that [TS]

00:12:41   really resonates some of the most productive stuff I've done on iOS is [TS]

00:12:46   just sitting down opening my word [TS]

00:12:49   has got a great iCloud sync and I'll just dictate text into it and no [TS]

00:12:55   formatting you know no scripts nothing just i just want to get texts somewhere [TS]

00:13:00   and like on the phone you can do that you know and and i'm i'm indie guy now [TS]

00:13:06   so I'm out my own dogs and some of you know me I'll be sitting at Disneyland [TS]

00:13:10   and I'll sit down for 30 minutes and just get a bunch of texts into the thing [TS]

00:13:13   and the iPhone iPad are great for that and that that's a useful activities if [TS]

00:13:19   it doesn't have to be all you know I don't have to post from their daughter [TS]

00:13:22   format and doing things only get texts somewhere that gives me a starting point [TS]

00:13:25   yeah I think and you know that I helped design and make this work is definitely [TS]

00:13:30   not a power user no tap it is very very straightforward and obvious and there's [TS]

00:13:35   there's no secret stuff for you know doesn't have any marked down support [TS]

00:13:41   that said the most surprising things to so many people that doesn't do anything [TS]

00:13:44   related to market but then I say to them all I said I remarked on it all the time [TS]

00:13:47   to put asterisks around words I want to get braces or URLs as I so you know it [TS]

00:13:54   doesn't do anything with it but it's like that's the whole my whole thinking [TS]

00:13:59   around the creation of markdown lo these many years ago what the hell happened at [TS]

00:14:04   eleven years or something like that it's crazy was that you could just entered [TS]

00:14:09   you know an asterisk tax get out it's now it's it's I mean I don't know you [TS]

00:14:16   have done so much good for the internet with markdown I know it's a totally just [TS]

00:14:20   made yourself but you know putting it out there I'm really appreciative of it [TS]

00:14:25   and I bookmarked I know but it's just you know it's just so useful I mean I do [TS]

00:14:33   everything in it and I don't know what when are you gonna get your app on the [TS]

00:14:38   Mac has I cannot way I need I need it it's a long story [TS]

00:14:44   I needed to I can she and I've been cheating cuz I have a Vesper for iPad [TS]

00:14:51   running iOS Simulator 2004 7 which i think is he right isn't great you know [TS]

00:15:00   it's like we're so weird if you've ever do you ever have anything running in [TS]

00:15:04   like I was simulator yeah I've fiddled with it but I understand my complaining [TS]

00:15:09   because it's time to use apps like this lady paste text in the way you do it [TS]

00:15:14   you're in a cab you selected text copy you go over to the iOS Simulator you [TS]

00:15:18   paste but then you have to tap in the text field and hit the paste like [TS]

00:15:24   pasting just paste it into the iOS Simulator Mac App then in Iowa simulator [TS]

00:15:30   you have to tap the insertion point where you want to text to go and then [TS]

00:15:34   tap the paste button on the little pop-up menu to get it to paste into iOS [TS]

00:15:39   space twice in the same thing for copying out if they could make me crazy [TS]

00:15:44   yeah it's well that's probably why i drink I don't know now it's a long long [TS]

00:15:50   story that we cannot get into where we're best performances but we we are [TS]

00:15:54   keenly aware that everybody wanted I could not place right here [TS]

00:16:00   me take a break and do our first sponsor and it is a brand new sponsor I'm very [TS]

00:16:06   excited to have a new sponsor I love this is a company called last bottle [TS]

00:16:11   wines last bottle is a daily wine purveyor much loved for it [TS]

00:16:17   beautiful website 30 to 75 percent discount on fine wine shipping included [TS]

00:16:23   and carefully curated and often highly sought-after wine selections by longtime [TS]

00:16:28   Napa Valley pros plastic bottle takes all the hassle out of deciding on what [TS]

00:16:33   to buy and makes it quick [TS]

00:17:18   great to me i i really I me personally I don't know much about wine and all this [TS]

00:17:24   sounds fantastic to me but here's the thing that they've got that really push [TS]

00:17:28   them forward is a gone beyond a website Dave they're releasing a very simple [TS]

00:17:34   easy to use iPhone app featuring push notifications of their daily wine offers [TS]

00:17:39   the team last bottle one way to reach a more connected audience of wine lovers [TS]

00:17:44   and couldn't think of a better crowd to introduce two then you guys the talk [TS]

00:17:48   show is everything to some of these wines that the they get their 11 a day [TS]

00:17:53   it's like one of these deal a day type things right but it's just for wine well [TS]

00:17:57   here's the thing sometimes it really limited quantities so if you really want [TS]

00:18:03   to get juiced into what they're offering the best way you can do is get these [TS]

00:18:08   push notifications are gonna get one today but then you can go look at it and [TS]

00:18:12   if it's one it's going to sell out sometimes they sell out within an hour [TS]

00:18:14   to you won't miss out so if you are serious about wine or if you want to get [TS]

00:18:22   serious about wine check these guys out it really does look beautiful really [TS]

00:18:26   does seem like a fantastic way to learn about new wines and get great wine sent [TS]

00:18:32   you add to it seems to me to be great great prices here you go go to [TS]

00:18:38   www.google.com [TS]

00:18:41   wines dot com slash the talk show that's last bottle wines dot com slash the talk [TS]

00:18:49   show and everything you need to do is write down the website including links [TS]

00:18:54   to their apt and etcetera etcetera so my thanks to last bottle great sponsor that [TS]

00:19:01   you love that there's non tech companies now sponsoring tech podcast all I think [TS]

00:19:07   I've been saying to people I think that that's not that I mind any of the tech [TS]

00:19:13   companies that do sponsored I mean that's obvious why they do but I think [TS]

00:19:17   that the non tech products it's Brian and I think they're all of our shows all [TS]

00:19:23   the shows that you think of the people who listen to strike back power users [TS]

00:19:26   are the talk show or ATP any other shows on relay FM it's really not about tech I [TS]

00:19:33   mean there are other podcast another podcast networks though that may be a [TS]

00:19:37   more purely technical and sorta like the old divide between Mac publications and [TS]

00:19:42   PC publications you know and and like the type of things where they where they [TS]

00:19:46   talk about you know their first emphasis is on specs or something like that [TS]

00:19:50   that's a different type of world you know this shows that about that you're [TS]

00:19:53   sure about that our show attracts our shows attract people who are picky and [TS]

00:20:00   care about ship that's it right and tacked it happens to be one of them and [TS]

00:20:05   so if your product whether it's you know mattresses or wine or pillows are all [TS]

00:20:10   this crazy shit which I never would have thought that I'd be some sponsorship [TS]

00:20:14   support I think it makes total sense that they have great success with our [TS]

00:20:19   shows because you know some chunk of our audience of the audience to listen to [TS]

00:20:24   this show that cares about the Mac and iOS and really wants to hear talk about [TS]

00:20:27   the Apple watch also really cares about wine and really want to be able to buy [TS]

00:20:32   land in a cool way and get a great price so I think makes all the sense in the [TS]

00:20:36   world [TS]

00:20:37   yeah I agree sort of in a way that like political magazine no one would ever [TS]

00:20:42   think that [TS]

00:20:43   in like a magazine that focuses on like national affairs that all the ads would [TS]

00:20:47   be for politics what the hell are you even advertise with politics I think the [TS]

00:20:51   thing with tack that might be might and I i myself felt you know felt felt it is [TS]

00:20:56   told you like years ago I wouldn't have expected these these type of sponsors [TS]

00:21:00   but like a national affairs magazine what are they felt their cars watches [TS]

00:21:06   and you know just all sorts of general purpose products it also indicates that [TS]

00:21:11   the but the platform for podcasting is getting more legitimate than me when we [TS]

00:21:16   first started doing ads about people really had trouble understanding you [TS]

00:21:20   know they don't even understand the metrics is everything is different from [TS]

00:21:24   traditional advertising fact I talked to some traditional advertising guys that [TS]

00:21:28   just pooh-pooh the whole thing you know but you know they don't understand [TS]

00:21:32   that's where people are going to get content now [TS]

00:21:34   yea well in 2007 when the show started its first run with me and me and AM [TS]

00:21:39   Benjamin the very first round it you could see those episodes it the [TS]

00:21:44   talk-show dotnet so we wanted to punters and I was something I was already think [TS]

00:21:52   I want full-time and tank fire bomb 2006 so I was all end and partially based on [TS]

00:21:59   user dunno direct support from readers from memberships and t shirts and stuff [TS]

00:22:03   like that but did memberships and t-shirts thing really was just the way [TS]

00:22:06   that I launched going full time the only way that I got to be in the black like [TS]

00:22:11   month to month which i think was like April 2006 when I announced its gone for [TS]

00:22:16   time and sold bunch t-shirts and had like twenty thousand dollars or [TS]

00:22:20   something like that that we cruising through the summer and just kind of [TS]

00:22:24   started mowing through and got like by August it was like we had like nothing [TS]

00:22:28   but partnerships are starting to pick up a little bit I remember by late October [TS]

00:22:33   or November we're like the little Excel spreadsheet where we were keeping track [TS]

00:22:36   of it where it was the first month where was I hate this we actually made a [TS]

00:22:40   little more than we spend on all their expenses [TS]

00:22:45   you know by 2007 when we started the talk show I was definitely something [TS]

00:22:50   enough sponsorships for Dan fireball that made it a legitimate job we [TS]

00:22:55   couldn't find anybody who sponsored by guest I mean like nobody we could even [TS]

00:22:59   some spots for like 250 bucks yeah I had never heard the daring purple origin [TS]

00:23:05   story before interesting too long story takes a pair of though you know they [TS]

00:23:14   like give up a job and well you've sort of done that I was I don't talk about me [TS]

00:23:18   let's talk about you so you have already said you are an attorney now you add [TS]

00:23:23   another reason I put off putting on a show now you live and summer in Southern [TS]

00:23:27   California Orange County right so that's why I have been waiting to have you on [TS]

00:23:32   the show right now today here in philadelphia is seventy degrees and [TS]

00:23:36   sunny it was 70 degrees and sunny yesterday and I believe the forecast [TS]

00:23:39   tomorrow is around seventy degrees and sunny so a few I don't even have the [TS]

00:23:44   weather widget on my Apple ID cuz I live in Southern California what you need [TS]

00:23:48   that for somebody said that me where I forget a friend Adam Lee cigar the other [TS]

00:23:55   week before he was on my show and we were preparing and he's so so so so [TS]

00:24:01   excited about that a polite and he was like me see he goes quick without [TS]

00:24:04   changing show me your watch face I sent a screenshot of my watch face [TS]

00:24:09   utility utility it is utilities utilities with known to know our numbers [TS]

00:24:14   with the date at 3 o'clock with fitness top right now whether top left and right [TS]

00:24:22   now I have my calendar at the bottom but I i I did it around with that sometimes [TS]

00:24:26   turned out just turn it often nothing rather than have that god damn no more [TS]

00:24:31   events in all caps by health cover the kinks are really mad about that no more [TS]

00:24:36   events thing it doesn't bother me it really bothers me because it bothers me [TS]

00:24:41   because if it was a real watch it was a mechanical way of doing it it was just [TS]

00:24:47   blank out like [TS]

00:24:49   so the equipment and again this isn't secure morphic it's not they're not [TS]

00:24:55   making it look like it flips around in that it's a little cut out panel that [TS]

00:24:59   shows this right I think they've designed to perfectly but it is sort of [TS]

00:25:03   mimicking the way that might like the way that the the little hour of the day [TS]

00:25:08   of the month thing at three o'clock it it's a little panel just like on a [TS]

00:25:12   mechanical watch on automatically so if you think about like a train station and [TS]

00:25:16   there's the board that shows all of the upcoming trends when there's like room [TS]

00:25:22   to show 12 but they there's only seven trains coming in the next to no [TS]

00:25:28   reasonable amount of time the bottom five rows don't say no more trains it's [TS]

00:25:33   just they just leave it blank like if there's nothing left the natural state [TS]

00:25:37   of a of an information panel is to just show [TS]

00:25:40   yeah it's actually takes effort to have it display no more events I mean there's [TS]

00:25:46   a code that does that say about that code could display blank just as easily [TS]

00:25:49   the explanation I've heard the best thing I've heard for why they show that [TS]

00:25:53   is that if you are the sort of person I think that the dividing line of whether [TS]

00:25:57   you are bothered by the Senate is whether you have a lot of events [TS]

00:26:01   calendar or not do you live the sort of life for you have a lot of meetings and [TS]

00:26:07   stuff like that and that you seldom see no more events and when that's me and [TS]

00:26:14   when you do see it it's like a relief it's it's like an inbox zero type of [TS]

00:26:19   euphoria that you get right it's like my day is done no more events it actually [TS]

00:26:24   pleases you to see it because you started your day with a whole bunch of [TS]

00:26:28   stuff that that that was going to cycle through whereas with me more often than [TS]

00:26:34   not you know I've got nothing on it on a regular day or the only thing I have I [TS]

00:26:38   do have like a calendar subscription to the Yankees schedule and so the only [TS]

00:26:42   thing on my watch is just tell me the Yankees played seven but I knew that [TS]

00:26:45   already [TS]

00:26:46   you know I don't need that on the calendar thanks [TS]

00:26:49   I also me like you're living right i think is bent on mine so I think I think [TS]

00:26:56   that no more events thing I think it hopefully it'll change I I could say I [TS]

00:27:00   really you know again I desire constant refrain of the last decade is I know [TS]

00:27:05   like some point around a decade ago we collectively realize that adding [TS]

00:27:11   preferences every time there's any kind of dispute over something is not the way [TS]

00:27:15   to build sustainable software for years to come because eventually you end up [TS]

00:27:19   with you know at any given one feature it's not a bad idea but as a general [TS]

00:27:24   principle if you keep doing that you end up with these crazy you know there's way [TS]

00:27:28   too many preferences here and you're lost trying to find anything but I do [TS]

00:27:32   think that maybe this one should be a setting and that the reason why I feel [TS]

00:27:36   like some people want to see that some people are just annoyed by that I don't [TS]

00:27:40   know that anybody you know I guess on my side of the fence would really care if [TS]

00:27:45   it never said no more events again I'd be fined for his blanket the end of the [TS]

00:27:50   day she said the people on the side of saying get rid of it are much more [TS]

00:27:54   passionate about that people would want to keep it I wouldn't mind too if there [TS]

00:27:57   was some way that it would show some people say that if showed nothing it [TS]

00:28:03   would create in this idea because it would make them feel like the calendar [TS]

00:28:08   wasn't syncing anymore you know that that it had lost the connection and [TS]

00:28:12   enter watchers no land that they do have an event upcoming but that the watch [TS]

00:28:17   isn't reading it you know that somehow I don't know why I can't really buy that I [TS]

00:28:24   it's it's interesting because I used a pebble for a long time i right up until [TS]

00:28:28   the time Apple watcher at least and I was always the pedal was always losing [TS]

00:28:33   connection with the phone and you know whether it was a calendar entry or the [TS]

00:28:38   weather or whatever it just you know it it was clearly bad and or old data and [TS]

00:28:44   ever since the Apple watch arrived I mean I just not even an issue for me I [TS]

00:28:48   always know that if I look at the weather is going to be the actual [TS]

00:28:51   current weather actually we're located or the calendar date is gonna be [TS]

00:28:54   accurate [TS]

00:28:54   there's been no failure I mean I have complete faith in it at this point and I [TS]

00:28:59   guess that's probably unfair to people because they're not Apple they don't [TS]

00:29:02   have the same access to the operating system [TS]

00:29:04   guys had but just worried that that's the weird thing about the watches you [TS]

00:29:10   don't fiddle with that much in my case I mean what I figured it out I just [TS]

00:29:14   started wearing it and it was my water and that was what your watch face [TS]

00:29:17   utility color black utility that the watch itself is the look of what your [TS]

00:29:27   what your highlight color for you to orange yeah yeah yeah me too high school [TS]

00:29:32   was black and orange and I always thought that those were it not just out [TS]

00:29:37   of sheer loyalty to whatever shitty color's your high school I always [TS]

00:29:44   thought it was it was a good luck and a rare one that there's not many teams in [TS]

00:29:48   sports with black and aren't we get the Tigers we were the the Mountaineers [TS]

00:29:53   Tigers in a drive-by [TS]

00:29:55   Tigers is usually like the NFL Bengals you know it's a natural orange and black [TS]

00:30:01   mamba high schools black and white shoes for a minute there I thought we may seem [TS]

00:30:05   school when that happened funny but yeah so I've got and I got the call it the [TS]

00:30:12   the budget Darth Vader watch you know the black aluminum with a rubber band [TS]

00:30:18   the black rubber and launch it looks really nice together I did the same [TS]

00:30:22   thing when I use the modular face I have them all damn I like the orange my son [TS]

00:30:26   has it as as red which I seen a lot of people with screenshot you know for [TS]

00:30:31   modular he's he's a digital guy get his watch a last time I heard you talking to [TS]

00:30:37   hear ya he got it he had of schedule so everything everything we've ordered for [TS]

00:30:43   the house has shown up except for my black steel links watch which seemingly [TS]

00:30:50   nobody has gotten it might miles tires freshman in college she got one and she [TS]

00:30:56   got a feeling she she sent me a diagram on it and I call cool she sent him a [TS]

00:31:01   message she wrote poop [TS]

00:31:03   that's a good care so you put my watch he said yeah I know I tried to drop I'll [TS]

00:31:15   prove the one time I that's not good enough that I I can try anything on this [TS]

00:31:19   thing just it's terrible here I don't know if that's really gonna be a thing [TS]

00:31:23   the heart beating with my wife that's cool [TS]

00:31:27   the taps we can kind of develop a language with the taps but the drawing [TS]

00:31:31   the picture thing I'm not sure where that's going yeah i dont no other thing [TS]

00:31:39   that I don't know about is the interface for you tap the side button to bring up [TS]

00:31:50   the little 12 o'clock you know the 12 spot dial for picking a contact and now [TS]

00:31:57   that so many people I know have an apple watch TV on 12 know it's definitely and [TS]

00:32:04   so what do you say I had to start I've already had to cut people and in addis [TS]

00:32:11   doesn't even mention the people who I might want to have a quick contact list [TS]

00:32:15   who don't have a watch but I want them there so that I could quick send them a [TS]

00:32:18   text message from my rest right I don't even a way to send a tap or picture to [TS]

00:32:27   someone who's not on that list of 12 I don't think there is no no no but you [TS]

00:32:31   can still initiate a phone call or a text to get away to tell you can [TS]

00:32:35   actually tell whether somebody has an apple watch registered to their Apple [TS]

00:32:39   ideas you put them in your your friends list that spot friends list and if they [TS]

00:32:45   have an apple watch they have three options [TS]

00:32:48   the center but center but yes and if not they don't and so I think I mentioned it [TS]

00:32:54   a few weeks ago and anticipation I figured I didn't know but I figured that [TS]

00:32:59   Jim Dalrymple would be getting would be getting a watch before April 24th so [TS]

00:33:06   every day I was checking to see if he'd gotten one yet [TS]

00:33:09   and then I got the 2013 she should have but the thing and I like quicksand [TS]

00:33:12   picture of [TS]

00:33:13   they want to be the first person to do it but it is an issue because this was [TS]

00:33:21   gonna be popular and like if you want it is so if you want to be able to do that [TS]

00:33:26   with a friend they have to get on your list of 12 [TS]

00:33:30   even though you may well somebody else that doesn't have to watch on that list [TS]

00:33:33   of 12 or maybe you have more than twelve people that watches and just seems like [TS]

00:33:38   a very limiting interface for something that they clearly intend to be a [TS]

00:33:41   massively important part of the watch given that it's the one and only feature [TS]

00:33:45   that that is that you can do with only two buttons on the thing hardware [TS]

00:33:50   buttons and 1 a.m. when you single press it it's all get there is no [TS]

00:33:54   configuration all it does is bring this side menu up her friends list from the [TS]

00:33:59   side and did too limited to 12 like that really feels really limited it's really [TS]

00:34:09   weird and now that I'm filled up with 12 somebody who forget to let somebody sent [TS]

00:34:13   me doodle the other day and I wanted to add them to my list but I already had 12 [TS]

00:34:20   and in that point what you have to do is you have to go to the phone and delete [TS]

00:34:26   somebody and add that person manually like there's no way to do it right there [TS]

00:34:30   on the fly as you as you get it [TS]

00:34:33   yeah it's about that evolves I think it has to I think it's it way too I mean I [TS]

00:34:39   you know it it would be easy to change I don't think anybody's gonna become [TS]

00:34:42   addicted to this twelve people in a circle thing so I think it'd be easy to [TS]

00:34:46   break that in the future and do something new and quite frankly it's [TS]

00:34:50   already change because it's a very different interface from what they [TS]

00:34:52   showed in September yeah I forgot was it a great thinker when they actually [TS]

00:34:58   forget but I know it wasn't a circle I totally forgot what it was in September [TS]

00:35:02   but I know as a circle [TS]

00:35:05   it's hard to look out on that because Apple sort of thrown September thing [TS]

00:35:09   down the memory hole it's fun though that's what happened this watch on and [TS]

00:35:13   you know getting notifications on their wrists and just the basic stuff but it's [TS]

00:35:17   also just fine like singing taps to people and I don't know why I think [TS]

00:35:21   they've done a good job with it yeah I do so you living in Orange County I saw [TS]

00:35:28   that when you first got it he wrote up your experiences with the right way [TS]

00:35:31   you'd gone to Disneyland and it looked like typical Orange County whether it [TS]

00:35:36   was funny that to me is as it gets nicer and nicer here [TS]

00:35:42   philadelphia's as we go into May from April and it's a lot fewer overcast days [TS]

00:35:47   and a lot of more days like today where it's just absolutely positively perfect [TS]

00:35:51   I find it hard to read the watch in some indirect sunlight it is harder to read [TS]

00:35:58   although I think that's one maybe the reason I like utility face it's very [TS]

00:36:01   easy to to see the hands are big enough that you're just fine [TS]

00:36:07   like the chronograph I don't know I don't think I could read that even if I [TS]

00:36:12   think that's very difficult to read because they handle hollow they're not [TS]

00:36:16   they're not and the extra superfluous stuff is just no way I could rebut 47 [TS]

00:36:24   they just it's not even possible I don't even know what those what they're doing [TS]

00:36:28   in their area magnifying glass or something but it's it's great I haven't [TS]

00:36:36   had a whole lot of trouble I can affect taken direct sunlight I can see how the [TS]

00:36:40   the panel's not attach the glass like I've kind of got used to the iPhone and [TS]

00:36:44   the iPad but you know its generation one I don't know about that I remember ATP [TS]

00:36:52   episode a couple of weeks ago when they were talking about how whether the [TS]

00:36:55   panels attached to the glass or not and I think and and I might get this detail [TS]

00:37:01   wrong but I think and then in the next episode in their follow-up there was one [TS]

00:37:04   of the johnnie I videos where they said on [TS]

00:37:06   Jony ive said on some of the some of the watches [TS]

00:37:11   display is fused to the sapphire crystal and that's all he said so I think it is [TS]

00:37:17   i think it is fused to the surface I think it looks pretty close and I think [TS]

00:37:22   that in certain lighting you can definitely see the display through the [TS]

00:37:26   Sapphire but it's it's rare for me even in some light it's rare for me I wonder [TS]

00:37:32   if she minds aluminum and so have the sapphire crystal wonder if an ATB guys [TS]

00:37:37   brought it up with what johnnie I've said and it's just as recording it [TS]

00:37:40   ambiguous what that means for the sport models because does he mean all of them [TS]

00:37:46   refused and on but some only some of them have sapphire or does he mean only [TS]

00:37:50   the 12 safire refused I don't know it I looked at my son's sport watch and it [TS]

00:37:55   didn't look to me like it was any different but I also have to admit that [TS]

00:37:59   it at age 42 and with the trouble with my lifetime I I can really see the [TS]

00:38:06   difference like this is the first time ever that I've had seen an Apple product [TS]

00:38:10   where I i really couldn't I think the 38 actually looks good on my wrist I think [TS]

00:38:17   I could totally get by with it in terms of the size but I actually do struggle [TS]

00:38:21   to read it in a way that I don't struggle to read the 42 [TS]

00:38:25   my wife's cause I had the black one [TS]

00:38:28   those were constrained so my wife's blue phone I'm sorry blue watch with silver [TS]

00:38:35   aluminum showed up on day one and she let me wear it for a few days because I [TS]

00:38:39   wanted to fiddle with it more than she did and it was 38 and it was fine and [TS]

00:38:43   look good on me but that I agree what's the bigger one showed up I knew exactly [TS]

00:38:47   that was as for me I think Adam have the same thing to do this so I for example [TS]

00:38:52   on the chronograph is a perfect not only really use the chronograph them although [TS]

00:38:56   I do sometimes the reason I like it is that you can just switch to chronograph [TS]

00:39:01   so I have chronograph to to watch faces over and then you're one tap away from [TS]

00:39:05   starting a timer [TS]

00:39:07   stopwatch if you wanted you you know you know I do I put charcoal in the ground [TS]

00:39:13   and then just boom started stopwatch and then I know you know once he gets a 25 [TS]

00:39:17   minute start checking in to see the training series timer awesome yeah just [TS]

00:39:22   told but I with the thirty eight millimeter with my son's thirteen [TS]

00:39:26   millimeter I can't read the subtitles on the chronograph action makes me feel [TS]

00:39:32   incredibly old like the little there's a there's a stop by our second hand [TS]

00:39:36   underneath and that depends I have it configured but there's two sub-dials [TS]

00:39:42   that it does little some circles are I can read the numbers on them on his and [TS]

00:39:47   I can read my mind was about your age I am I noticed I was holding books out [TS]

00:39:52   further and further from me as I read them and someone said you know you you [TS]

00:39:57   may have you know you may have a problem there we were at Costco I'll never [TS]

00:40:00   forget and they had you know this sample reading glasses and i put a pair on and [TS]

00:40:05   look at some words like god damn I'm getting old and i'm looking iFixit [TS]

00:40:10   teardown of an aluminum one and it's not clear but it looks like it may be [TS]

00:40:14   attention it's pretty close to the surface and I i think that the affect [TS]

00:40:18   the overall effect of the entire black surface [TS]

00:40:24   whichever model you have looks like it's the display and the actual display just [TS]

00:40:29   takes up you know some portion within it with these generous what seems to be [TS]

00:40:35   generous margins around it in fact they like those when you have stuff out to [TS]

00:40:39   the corner there really writing it right out to the corner of the display and I [TS]

00:40:43   asked rated screenshot and you seem like wow that doesn't look right right yeah [TS]

00:40:49   and you know and that it was definitely true with some of the initial apps that [TS]

00:40:54   came out in April that they had way to the margin you know they had like even [TS]

00:40:58   just two or three pixels margin it it really made their their stuff like [TS]

00:41:02   cramped have you done the fitness stuff much of you played with them a little [TS]

00:41:07   bit [TS]

00:41:08   I you know I'm getting back into running now that clear into it with my stuff so [TS]

00:41:16   I'm you know I'm using it to run a couple times a week and I track you know [TS]

00:41:19   sometimes I do it I don't know that I go out why live in the city and so I walk [TS]

00:41:23   everywhere and to me going on a walk like walking somewhere like if I walk to [TS]

00:41:27   pick up my son from school it's like one and a half miles away so it's a three [TS]

00:41:31   mile walk round trip that doesn't feel like exercise to me like walking i mean [TS]

00:41:35   it's cutting its good for you and I think it's one of the nice part of the [TS]

00:41:38   city but to me it doesn't feel silly to me to start the workout out and say I'm [TS]

00:41:43   going on a walk and I'm just walking but I do it just to have it to play with the [TS]

00:41:48   thing I realizes it cuz I never really thought about heart rate much as I [TS]

00:41:53   walked a lot too and I think I'm doing great with exercise I'm walking all over [TS]

00:41:56   the place but we're in the watch for the first week of release you know I didn't [TS]

00:41:59   do anything to raise my heart rate the whole weeks and now to watch actually is [TS]

00:42:03   change my behavior so now I'm like looking for hills to climb or spend a [TS]

00:42:08   little time everyday kinda get my heart rate up and and I'm not sure if it's [TS]

00:42:12   just the newness of the watch if this will stick or not but it bothers me now [TS]

00:42:17   when I get him down and get my thirty minutes of elevated heart rate yeah and [TS]

00:42:21   I do think too that the fitness stuff even though I'm not a super big fitness [TS]

00:42:26   enthusiasts but I'm learning every day and so now I've got like six weeks out [TS]

00:42:30   of you know daily stuff it is keeping me from wearing my old watch it one of the [TS]

00:42:37   main it probably the main thing that's keeping me from just wearing my old [TS]

00:42:41   watch you know just for kicks which is something I you know you switch between [TS]

00:42:47   two watches and [TS]

00:42:48   I anticipated that I wouldn't want to wear my Apple watch every single day [TS]

00:42:51   maybe even not most days but the fitness stuff kind of motivates me too and I've [TS]

00:42:56   heard other people say the same thing because you don't want to have to lose a [TS]

00:42:58   day and have a day where you know makes it look like a bed or even like when you [TS]

00:43:04   get out of bed in the morning and say I'm gonna be working in pyjamas for two [TS]

00:43:08   hours I'll still put the watch on cuz I know I'm going to be going up and down [TS]

00:43:12   the steps and doing so i dont wanna lose that credit so it's funny I'm very [TS]

00:43:17   motivated to get this watch honest and say wake up in the morning I do find now [TS]

00:43:22   I still find like before we move on from white stuff but I do find I'm still [TS]

00:43:27   right from my first review one week after wearing it I still annoyed when I [TS]

00:43:32   look at it and the display doesn't turn on for whatever reason and it just [TS]

00:43:36   happened to me while I was coming up the stairs my office here at the house as [TS]

00:43:40   you know second floor and I was coming up here to do the podcast and my arms [TS]

00:43:44   were full at a coffee mug in one hand and I had my thermos filled with the [TS]

00:43:48   coffee and the other and so I couldn't control my rest ma'am but I got got the [TS]

00:43:55   tap that I hadn't had an alert and I look at my wrists to see what it was and [TS]

00:43:59   it's black and i was just so annoyed even know I was only 10 seconds away [TS]

00:44:04   from being able to set it down into it was but it's like if you're giving me [TS]

00:44:08   the tap I wanna see the god damn thing you might take on that is that they at [TS]

00:44:14   some point they said no one story we never want written about the Apple watch [TS]

00:44:18   is that the battery dies at 5 p.m. yep I think more than anything like it also [TS]

00:44:23   bothers me that that it turns off tonight was at six seconds because [TS]

00:44:27   sometimes I actually need more than six sections six seconds to process what's [TS]

00:44:30   on the screen and I just feel like somewhere they said you know we're gonna [TS]

00:44:34   make it extra sensitive or not gonna make it turned on just anytime you flick [TS]

00:44:38   arrest were not going to leave it online and we're never gonna have a story [TS]

00:44:41   written that says turn that the battery died 25 and I think they you know they [TS]

00:44:46   can what you farming I got a bad things that 45 percent battery after an 18 hour [TS]

00:44:50   day means crazy yeah I for me its batteries been such a non-issue the only [TS]

00:44:55   time I ever got vaguely clueless never once ran all the way down but one time [TS]

00:44:58   in the first week while I was really you know working pretty much warning tonight [TS]

00:45:04   on how am I gonna write this first review of the watch you know when the [TS]

00:45:08   embargo drops next week I mean and really using it in a way that was not [TS]

00:45:13   reflective of the daily use of it it was really more like I was able to get [TS]

00:45:18   quality assistance tester you know like I'm testing a lot like it was my job to [TS]

00:45:21   play with it although I ran it down to the by 10 percent or something like that [TS]

00:45:26   but that was that was truly abnormal I do think though that there is I haven't [TS]

00:45:31   seen anybody publish any kind of specs on it but I think the difference between [TS]

00:45:34   38 and 42 on battery life is truly significant as it seems like my wife and [TS]

00:45:39   son both have 38 definitely finished the day lower neither one has ever run out [TS]

00:45:45   but they're both significantly lower I was thinking I'd be buying an extra [TS]

00:45:52   magnetic charger and I keep in my car and I had all these like ideas on [TS]

00:45:56   average about the watch and I don't need any of that stuff for me it's just plug [TS]

00:46:00   it in it and you know charge at the end of the day I'm fine but if I had a [TS]

00:46:04   setting and I feel like the other thing they wanted to do I think you're exactly [TS]

00:46:06   right that they said we don't want anybody saying that this thing is [TS]

00:46:10   crapping out before they go to bed so I feel like the roughly day and a half [TS]

00:46:16   battery life that they've hit is exactly right because that way you definitely [TS]

00:46:22   have to charge it every day by you I don't see anybody complaining that the [TS]

00:46:27   watch is turning black before they go to sleep [TS]

00:46:31   yeah but I can you know and there are some hypothetical scenarios I mean I am [TS]

00:46:35   an old man and I just stay home all the time [TS]

00:46:36   but when I heard a younger man there were times where I would you know spur [TS]

00:46:42   the moment windup you know sleeping someone that wasn't my house you know [TS]

00:46:49   just sleeping at a friends you know you handled it really well I don't even mean [TS]

00:46:55   to imply anything I don't mean to imply anything any kind of even adult [TS]

00:46:59   situation may be other than the the consumption of adult beverages yeah when [TS]

00:47:04   I was younger man it'd be more like a overnight halo party you know what you [TS]

00:47:08   know what that's a dad soon example to know I like in college we would have all [TS]

00:47:14   night marathon sessions you know where you had wanted to play a network game [TS]

00:47:18   yet to be in a land that's a perfect example where there's nothing in a brawl [TS]

00:47:22   not imply anything inappropriate or that I let any kind of crazy lifestyle but [TS]

00:47:26   you know in college I sometimes would not sleep in my bedroom or I wouldn't [TS]

00:47:32   come home until six or seven in the morning you know in which case I I do [TS]

00:47:35   wonder whether the why I don't know that the watch as it is today would make it [TS]

00:47:39   then these like charging straps and where things are showing up I i think [TS]

00:47:44   thats all completely abandon its crazy and I don't understand because you have [TS]

00:47:48   to do anyway to charge it is too is underneath it and that's it I don't see [TS]

00:47:53   how they can possibly work with the with the tenders that they have the center [TS]

00:47:58   circle bananas if they're not connected to your skin it's it's funny how much [TS]

00:48:02   time we spend weeks and thinking about battery life and and batteries because [TS]

00:48:07   the whole world has changed in the last five six years as all mobile now and and [TS]

00:48:14   charging my phone battery time as Sookie and and and it's the big constraint [TS]

00:48:18   right now too so everything you think about charging I I'm upset about it I [TS]

00:48:23   have charging docks all over my house and like I'm just sitting here right now [TS]

00:48:27   my phones and a charger doesn't need to pay its at a hundred percent at sino 1 [TS]

00:48:32   o'clock in the afternoon but I can't help myself have you found that your [TS]

00:48:36   wife or your iPhone gets worse battery life now that year [TS]

00:48:39   using it with your watch haven't noticed any I am convinced that I am I'm [TS]

00:48:44   convinced that and I think it's because I never used anything Bluetooth before [TS]

00:48:47   and so yeah I had it on for the future costs and doesn't handle hentoff [TS]

00:48:58   required Bluetooth though I think it may not but I know that like airdrop [TS]

00:49:05   requires Bluetooth but but it only ever before I started using Apple watch I was [TS]

00:49:11   only ever had grey blue tooth in the status bar great Bluetooth means like [TS]

00:49:16   Bluetooth is on but you're not connected to anything it's just just low power [TS]

00:49:21   mode and it's there for like oh ok you can hand off this web pages email [TS]

00:49:27   they've started writing underfunded and it only really does anything but now [TS]

00:49:31   it's black all the time it's the black Bluetooth because it's going to watch [TS]

00:49:35   and I'm convinced I'm getting worse battery life on the phone I'm still [TS]

00:49:38   making it through the day but I am dropping into the red whereas in the [TS]

00:49:42   first few months of using an iPhone 6 I never was in the red eyes bluetooth [TS]

00:49:47   headphones and stuff all day long so it's I can't tell any difference I'll [TS]

00:49:52   tell you one thing about the watch that I didn't expect to like as much as I do [TS]

00:49:56   is that whole forst touch thing let me just fine I really like having that [TS]

00:50:03   additional user interface [TS]

00:50:04   you know just clearing your notifications with a force but yeah yeah [TS]

00:50:09   it's I hope that that stuff makes its way to the thought I've said this before [TS]

00:50:13   and I know it sounds like a joke but my number 252 tips for anybody get sample [TS]

00:50:18   watch as I know what you're going to do is what you gonna do it in a box and [TS]

00:50:22   you're gonna put it on and go through the parent process and just started [TS]

00:50:25   using it [TS]

00:50:25   exploring and doing it [TS]

00:50:27   so go ahead I'm not going to tell you that you know take your vitamins open it [TS]

00:50:31   up put it on play with it and then a day or two later when you feel like you're [TS]

00:50:35   confused you feel like you're not getting it here's the two things to do [TS]

00:50:38   go back to your packaging and reread the Getting Started pamphlet which is just [TS]

00:50:43   six panels I'm not saying read the user manual I'm saying just read that getting [TS]

00:50:47   started panel which is like almost like a comic book many user manual because [TS]

00:50:53   you'll i guess i i guarantee most people will find something that they didn't [TS]

00:50:57   know or didn't remember like oh that's how you do Apple pay you start by double [TS]

00:51:01   tapping that but like when I I'll admit I like when I would first week that I [TS]

00:51:08   was had a watch I i couldn't get out the paperwork and went to Whole Foods and I [TS]

00:51:14   held my watch up to that I figured it worked like the phone I knew that I had [TS]

00:51:17   two double tap that button to confirm it I just figured you start by holding a [TS]

00:51:21   watch up to the terminal and then when it paintings like ok ready for Apple [TS]

00:51:24   paid then you double tap to confirm and nothing happened and I thought oh well [TS]

00:51:29   maybe I didn't set up and then let you know but just read a pamphlet I'm [TS]

00:51:34   telling you gonna learn something and there's so many questions I see it on [TS]

00:51:37   Twitter every day when people are still getting their watches and they're asking [TS]

00:51:41   questions that are answered in that that pamphlet and then I have like the that [TS]

00:51:46   whenever he double tap the crowd goes to the last yeah yeah I've seen people say [TS]

00:51:52   I wish there was some way to just go back to the last I double click the [TS]

00:51:58   crowd they've really thought of that and then my second attempt my only two top [TS]

00:52:02   tips my second tip is Triforce tapping everywhere [TS]

00:52:07   any app you use whether it's from Apple whether it's from a third-party Triforce [TS]

00:52:11   tattoo and see if there's something there [TS]

00:52:14   yeah you're right and and so often that's like the answer to all problems [TS]

00:52:18   when you're stuck somewhere you know there was a lot of talk when they first [TS]

00:52:23   came out about two things that the forces are raised complain about [TS]

00:52:26   notifications which I never really got it seemed to me like especially [TS]

00:52:30   some of these people at a tech press should understand that notifications are [TS]

00:52:33   entirely within your control but you know it's not that hard to to just [TS]

00:52:39   notification that hasn't really been an issue for me but the other one that I [TS]

00:52:41   thought was kind of unfair is that the whole thing about saying well this is a [TS]

00:52:46   different interface and it's harder to figure out well it is a different [TS]

00:52:49   interface it's a smaller screen but I I don't think you should expect it any [TS]

00:52:54   different I do think maybe it would be better if there was a way if you know [TS]

00:53:00   they're two buttons are winning there's one button you can press that would [TS]

00:53:03   always give you a watch face but I i really think it really wasn't that hard [TS]

00:53:10   to figure out I haven't linked to it yet but I almost certainly will [TS]

00:53:18   before the show airs were recording on Thursday it here on Friday Stephen North [TS]

00:53:27   going to have a link from doing fireball I will try to remember the link to it [TS]

00:53:32   and show you are making a no right now [TS]

00:53:34   Stephen Lawrence had an interesting like first week with the iPhone blog post and [TS]

00:53:43   one of his ideas was that he thought that maybe the [TS]

00:53:49   the side button instead of being underneath the crown should have been [TS]

00:53:54   opposite the crown and that you could tap it to go back so that is he found a [TS]

00:54:01   demi was in any app that have an obligation you know the route and then [TS]

00:54:05   you type of thing and then you go in and then there's a little back button up [TS]

00:54:08   there that it's really hard to tap that back button and I completely six weeks [TS]

00:54:12   and I still miss back buttons a lot in that upper corner or depending on the [TS]

00:54:18   app I've tried to be hitting a back button and even worse than missing it [TS]

00:54:22   all hit something beneath it like I've been trying I've been experimenting with [TS]

00:54:28   Wonder list price shopping and stuff like that like a little shopping list [TS]

00:54:33   and wonder list and then it's on my wrists and I don't have to go to the [TS]

00:54:36   supermarket chillin with a phone I can just keep going to my wrist but I find [TS]

00:54:40   that sometimes you know I try to hit the top item today either check it off and [TS]

00:54:45   hit the back button it goes back to my list a list or a try to go back to the [TS]

00:54:48   back let's listen end up checking the top item so his ideas put a hardware [TS]

00:54:52   button to go back which I don't think it's a good idea and I think if you put [TS]

00:54:56   it opposite the digital crown would actually create the same sort of [TS]

00:54:59   problems people have with the power button and the volume up button on the [TS]

00:55:04   iPhone's sex where people are opposite each other and people put their fingers [TS]

00:55:09   on both of them and then they try to squeeze one in the end up squeezing the [TS]

00:55:12   other times you gotta take a picture in turn your camera or phone off that that [TS]

00:55:18   new jersey guy Mike early and Jason selling the upgrade podcast a few weeks [TS]

00:55:23   ago did kind of a thing about this and Mike made the point that you know the [TS]

00:55:28   home screen on the watch is the watch yes and I thought he made a really great [TS]

00:55:33   point that it should be all there should be one button that just get you to the [TS]

00:55:36   watch face at any time and the promise of digital crown is it it's inconsistent [TS]

00:55:41   sometimes it does that sometimes it go somewhere else [TS]

00:55:45   and I you know it the case that up on a lot of time figuring this out but but I [TS]

00:55:49   still appreciate the idea of just every user knows they press one button and the [TS]

00:55:54   watch face comes up and from there hopefully figured out [TS]

00:55:57   gestures enough to be able to get to where you need to go yeah it's a great I [TS]

00:56:01   I really do think that that's true and I think calling the list of apps the home [TS]

00:56:05   screen I don't even know if Apple is calling it don't know if they even call [TS]

00:56:08   it that but it's not you know and it's only serves to confuse you make you [TS]

00:56:13   think that it's that watch works like a little iPhone and I do think that that [TS]

00:56:20   is a great point because I think part of the beauty of iOS is that the Westway [TS]

00:56:25   the home button or no matter where you are you can hit home runs and it's going [TS]

00:56:29   to take you to the home screen but then looking at my wife and daughter who [TS]

00:56:34   neither one of them a geek store wanna be Mac power users or anything like that [TS]

00:56:38   they used to watch is just fine you know i mean they are not having any trouble [TS]

00:56:43   using it so maybe they did it right right but the way I can I OS like you [TS]

00:56:49   just single tap the home button and it takes you to your home screen and it [TS]

00:56:53   doesn't matter if you're in a nap hit the home button next to the home screen [TS]

00:56:56   if you're already on the home screen and you've brought up control center or [TS]

00:57:01   you've brought down notification so you can hit the home screen and it goes away [TS]

00:57:05   now you don't have to because you can just tap together to go away but if you [TS]

00:57:08   don't know how to do that because there's no button that says make it go [TS]

00:57:11   away just hit that home button and it takes you there so I can kinda see the [TS]

00:57:15   logic of if there was just a button that always took you to watch face now think [TS]

00:57:20   users will appreciate that it's his front just fine when Apple make [TS]

00:57:28   something new like a 1.0 product I agree and just to see what they've done with [TS]

00:57:33   it and i know im a geek and all that stuff but it's just cool to be part of [TS]

00:57:37   it I think the one that excited me the most when it came out was the iPad [TS]

00:57:40   because it's just that I just felt like it was such a a great idea and it was [TS]

00:57:46   just so awesome that showed up I [TS]

00:57:48   but but both both the iPad the iPhone when they came out I spent weeks just [TS]

00:57:53   like going over every detail in just plain with them and think about the the [TS]

00:57:58   the watches I didn't spend that much time fiddling with american I got it set [TS]

00:58:02   up the way I wanted a company watch face picked out and I put it on and I went on [TS]

00:58:07   with my day but I'm just using it just hasn't ended all the time I think it's a [TS]

00:58:11   good thing but it is different [TS]

00:58:15   yeah definitely hold that thought that let's take a break and talk about our [TS]

01:00:59   said a really good idea for the talk show like a running bit like a Seinfeld [TS]

01:01:04   episode and at the end of every show you could tell a story that involves all our [TS]

01:01:09   sponsors could be this close it out [TS]

01:01:12   could be tough [TS]

01:01:13   but the team based on the help if we had had the Casper mattresses and pillows [TS]

01:01:23   but we don't our final to sponsor the day we could we could tell a story about [TS]

01:01:28   eating a salad drinking finished the whole bottle and we needed a nap [TS]

01:01:38   here's one more before we go to move on from the watch but this is one that I've [TS]

01:01:44   been thinking about [TS]

01:01:45   I have turned on if you go to Settings text and something like two things that [TS]

01:01:53   don't really seem like they belong in the same settings panel brightness and [TS]

01:01:57   TXT text size I've turned on the option for bold text you ever tried this know I [TS]

01:02:07   have it so I think a lot of people probably haven't you might have because [TS]

01:02:11   when you toggle it either way it pops up a dialog that says hey changing this [TS]

01:02:18   setting requires restarting your watch and so when it first week that had I saw [TS]

01:02:22   that I'll do that later I don't feel like restarting a lot right now takes [TS]

01:02:26   like two or three minutes for the watch I really like the way it looks and I [TS]

01:02:31   don't even think that it's and accessibility issues although it could [TS]

01:02:38   be for some but it's not under General accessibility it's under text settings [TS]

01:02:44   it's like a legitimate option I really like the way it looks now the truth is [TS]

01:02:50   I'm you know as we spoke up for 4200 made perfectly healthy right eye is [TS]

01:02:56   already sort of on the [TS]

01:02:58   beginning cusp of acquiring reading glasses and my left eye is a mass so you [TS]

01:03:09   know part of it is maybe age-related maybe but I kind of like it even like [TS]

01:03:13   when I don't even have my contacts and then my eyes really can't I can still [TS]

01:03:17   see super good cause I really like the way the bold text looks I really think [TS]

01:03:23   it looks sort of sort of like the way that in the classic Mac OS that like [TS]

01:03:28   chicago was sort of a bold bold font and I just activated while you're talking I [TS]

01:03:35   can see that I know what you're very particular about typography so I never [TS]

01:03:39   thought you'd be the guy who who tested the pic you would want the built-in I [TS]

01:03:45   but I really loved it and especially here's where I especially love the bold [TS]

01:03:49   text is on watch faces not even I feel like it looks a little bit weird when [TS]

01:03:55   you get like a text and you see the text you know i kind of what I would really [TS]

01:04:00   like to talk about power user features like if if there was an equivalent of [TS]

01:04:03   like the way you can do like defaults write tax on on Mac OS 10 to get [TS]

01:04:09   preferences only been available visually but I would love to do is turn it off [TS]

01:04:13   everywhere except watch faces and only have it on watch faces at dis what it [TS]

01:04:18   means is that all the complications have boulder slightly boulder Texas not like [TS]

01:04:23   bold it's like switching from a light ish version of San Francisco 20 like a [TS]

01:04:28   medium bowl semi bold version of San Francisco and I feel like it's a really [TS]

01:04:32   good luck and in a way that to me looks a lot like like a lot of real mechanical [TS]

01:04:38   watches have fun on the dial that are of this rough wait yeah yeah it really into [TS]

01:04:46   me it also to go back to the viewing in sunlight it makes the complication text [TS]

01:04:51   easier for me to read in sunlight [TS]

01:04:53   do you think they're going to allow developers to submit their own watch [TS]

01:04:57   races at any point no I do not I really don't because I think that or I think [TS]

01:05:05   most likely know and I think if they do it'll it'll be a system that [TS]

01:05:09   ones like the way Apple TV runs today where they will be partnerships that are [TS]

01:05:15   cultivated yeah but that there is no there will you know there's an app store [TS]

01:05:21   already for apps that has thousands of apps from anybody and everybody I think [TS]

01:05:27   if they ever do third-party watch faces it would be like Apple TV and it would [TS]

01:05:32   be cultivated list at hand selected and approved by Apple at a very high level [TS]

01:05:37   yes icon that people they had it was just it was a crazy people had these [TS]

01:05:43   nutty faces but then occasionally someone would you like a really classy [TS]

01:05:47   fruit or based watch face that looks really really actually better than [TS]

01:05:52   anything that they had been there till David you realize you're speaking about [TS]

01:05:56   people in the past [TS]

01:05:57   well through in my life it is a past it didn't even realize it [TS]

01:06:06   no i didnt i I have to pre order in for the pebble time I keep on the color [TS]

01:06:12   purple color was just feel like they should have called it but it's called [TS]

01:06:15   purple time the thing that I can tell is going to be a can tell it's gonna be a [TS]

01:06:20   non-starter and I feel bad for them for me at least maybe some people you know [TS]

01:06:24   some people might really still preferred but for me the thing that kills it is [TS]

01:06:28   the fact that this did this play is so clearly different from the bezel around [TS]

01:06:33   the display yes it doesn't matter what to me whether its color and i'd to me it [TS]

01:06:38   just looks so elegant looks like you have a little screened strapped arrest [TS]

01:06:42   as I know it's cheaper that's a that's a motivation are you can run up for [TS]

01:06:46   several days but the thing you know have been used one for a year just the fact [TS]

01:06:51   that it it just didn't stay paired consistently with an iPhone and maybe if [TS]

01:06:56   you've got an Android device you're better off but with an iPhone I just [TS]

01:07:01   found it very inconsistent and and that was just you know frustrating so [TS]

01:07:06   and I don't have a problem at all with the Apple of course one of the weird [TS]

01:07:11   things about this that I hate columns more like just the new digital watch 2.0 [TS]

01:07:18   these new computerized digital watches is that you don't really have a lot of [TS]

01:07:24   choice it really it all starts with what phone use and pebbles trying to straddle [TS]

01:07:28   these two worlds and I wish them the best of luck I'd s why I preordered the [TS]

01:07:32   time I hope that they make it and I hope that they know I i feel like i we need [TS]

01:07:37   more companies like people to succeed but I just feel like it's so hard [TS]

01:07:41   because they're fighting these massive massive companies like Apple and Google [TS]

01:07:46   who have these resources that are just so hard for them to match with a can't [TS]

01:07:50   match the resources but the fact that they can't make it harder for them to [TS]

01:07:54   compete but like the Android where vs Apple watch there's a minute debate like [TS]

01:08:02   whatever let you know if you're if you use an iPhone you know I wondered where [TS]

01:08:07   it doesn't work with I know there's rumors that they are going to make it [TS]

01:08:09   work with it and I can the next month or two at Google i/o but it's not going to [TS]

01:08:15   be the level of integration that Apple waters because they're only gonna be [TS]

01:08:18   able to do the things that people can do with iOS which is all limited by the App [TS]

01:08:23   Store restrictions for what it can do you know when you're going to have this [TS]

01:08:27   goodly setup process for Bluetooth free after four digit code it is gonna be [TS]

01:08:34   limited and if you have an Android phone you do don't even have a choice to use a [TS]

01:08:38   nap what I grew up in the era where you know you'd be trying to use a Palm Pilot [TS]

01:08:44   with a Mac or candy candy where processor called it'll be all these [TS]

01:08:51   technology that wasn't Apple based trying to get to work with apple and it [TS]

01:08:55   was such a pain that I just have a zero tolerance for even trying that stuff at [TS]

01:08:59   this point I mean if Apple makes both pieces I'm just going to use the thing [TS]

01:09:03   that really my had a handspring buzzer my wife had 12 and she probably used to [TS]

01:09:08   more than I did which is pretty interesting because you know [TS]

01:09:11   is this background 99 2000 and I remember this when I was working a [TS]

01:09:16   bare-bones software my pal gym Korea is now at the Omni group like he did like [TS]

01:09:21   the best thing everybody like 25 like replacement stylus is answering visor so [TS]

01:09:27   it was like a jar candy on his desk like just go you know alright gimme gimme [TS]

01:09:33   five point got one in every never had to worry about losing your goddamn stylist [TS]

01:09:38   was it and I'm pretty careful with my devices but it was like it was a common [TS]

01:09:43   problem syncing your software mac was the biggest I think it was kept me from [TS]

01:09:47   eventually made me abandon it and part of the problem to visit the max of that [TS]

01:09:51   era didn't really have standard system databases for things like that there was [TS]

01:09:56   no built-in contact you know and classic there was no standard context so it's a [TS]

01:10:01   you could sink with something but it was like a limited number of third party [TS]

01:10:04   options and there was no standard [TS]

01:10:06   system wide calendar i I tell people everything that gets into the discussion [TS]

01:10:11   about a pricing I talked to them about how my Palm Pilot about every month or [TS]

01:10:16   two it was just duplicate all of my contacts and if I didn't fix it and [TS]

01:10:21   another month I would have four copies of every contact and so on and somebody [TS]

01:10:26   made it happened it was $50 and all it did was go out and knock out duplication [TS]

01:10:31   as I was so happy to pay you know and now it's like this Apple change your [TS]

01:10:36   life and it'll be allow you to get your work done and go home earlier how much [TS]

01:10:41   as five bucks five bucks what are you talking [TS]

01:10:46   could so true I think somewhere that's crazy I don't like an inverse curve to [TS]

01:11:01   like the price of a cup of coffee more coffee gets the more or less willing [TS]

01:11:05   people are willing to pay for apps Joanna stern of the wall street journal [TS]

01:11:15   has her column a couple of weeks ago was about how to fix up viewer Word contacts [TS]

01:11:23   database you know that if you like her over the years have wound up like she [TS]

01:11:28   had like four entries for her dad like one was just his email one was just his [TS]

01:11:31   phone number you know one you know i get if you have a relative I guess bob but [TS]

01:11:37   he's also listed as Robert you know and it's two entries and you know that [TS]

01:11:41   there's a bunch of these utilities that you can you can buy 22 you know pics at [TS]

01:11:46   all and it's a song like in the comments people were like $4 but it's like it [TS]

01:11:53   would save you like it's like her whole thing was like you know if you have 500 [TS]

01:11:58   contacts and you did it by hand if I these apps can help you like they could [TS]

01:12:02   you can easily save an hour right and so an asshole who doesn't whose time is not [TS]

01:12:08   worth $4 for an hour or whatever the process of matching hair on your [TS]

01:12:11   deathbed and you say you can't live another hour to $4 what he's gonna say [TS]

01:12:17   you know i mean alright so speaking only building let's talk about you and your [TS]

01:12:23   so you're you're an attorney and had been what was what was your practice [TS]

01:12:29   business I'm a business attorney represent small companies have been [TS]

01:12:33   doing for 21 years but I was in law firm the whole time until about two months [TS]

01:12:39   ago and I got out of there man I hit the brakes all of this other stuff that [TS]

01:12:44   you've been doing all the podcasting blogging all the writing and all this [TS]

01:12:47   stuff is all been on the side of you being a full-time partner in a law firm [TS]

01:12:52   not net net was never partner [TS]

01:12:55   that the way it was set up just wasn't set up that way but I was I was always [TS]

01:12:59   full time where and now you are you talking but you quit that quit that job [TS]

01:13:08   yeah you're doing this stuff full time but you also have your own new law [TS]

01:13:15   practice [TS]

01:13:16   yeah it's weird you know it's like maybe looking back I mean I guess on a few [TS]

01:13:20   years yeah it's a very public thing you know when you quit a job that pays well [TS]

01:13:26   you got insurance and all that stuff and you're like ok and I'm gonna do that i'm [TS]

01:13:30   gonna write about you know the Mac and and do some law stuff too but I i wanted [TS]

01:13:34   to have more control and you know just you know as you get older you just that [TS]

01:13:39   control thing is more important to you and I know maybe at some point I wanted [TS]

01:13:43   to be like a big-time lawyer in a big-time arm but that's just not me I [TS]

01:13:47   like representing small guys my clients are represented on the software [TS]

01:13:52   developers I do contracts for them and stuff like that you know so this is [TS]

01:13:57   something I could have done on my own but I just invite the overhead in [TS]

01:14:00   wanting more meetings etched in one all the stuff that comes with being as part [TS]

01:14:04   of a big operation and and have also been doing the Mac sparky stuff so I [TS]

01:14:09   wanted to be able to have more time for that so I figured out of work a little [TS]

01:14:13   bit less as a lawyer and a little bit more snacks market have a better balance [TS]

01:14:16   in my life so I went out and announced that I've done this and now the whole [TS]

01:14:20   world can watch me you know go down in flames are or make it work I'm not sure [TS]

01:14:24   I'm still on that play with you i'm looking at the Excel spreadsheet [TS]

01:14:26   everybody but they but it feels absolutely the right thing I mean I'm [TS]

01:14:32   sorry I just tell my wife I said I gotta make this work there's no way I could [TS]

01:14:35   ever go work for somebody ever and I've gotta make this man but it's so far it's [TS]

01:14:40   it's great my love it and the communities been really good to me and I [TS]

01:14:44   had dinner in a month or so ago I actually it was when I got the review in [TS]

01:14:50   truth a polite I went to New York the night before just won't have to take the [TS]

01:14:53   train in the morning and and [TS]

01:14:54   Jason cut can I had dinner and we are talking about how having been successful [TS]

01:14:59   at this and having done it for ourselves full time for some number of years now [TS]

01:15:02   has rendered as completely unemployed I am certainly well-known and I think I [TS]

01:15:12   think that if I needed to get a job I get certainly final and I you know and [TS]

01:15:17   then I think I would be I would be let go with this is this is one of the [TS]

01:15:25   things that surprised me about this whole thing was I got a lot of new [TS]

01:15:30   clients from Max parking people had been listening to me in their ear you know [TS]

01:15:34   how r podcasting in writing for all these years now I can I could actually [TS]

01:15:38   use you to help me with some stuff and and that was a surprise to me I had no [TS]

01:15:44   expectation of any legal business from this and so I was kind of nice but but [TS]

01:15:51   it's also give me more time so you know I'm working from home and office paper [TS]

01:15:56   come home more than I go into the office and I love it you didn't think that we [TS]

01:16:00   like years ago back when you said here's my new work shoes and you had a pair of [TS]

01:16:05   slippers here and I don't you probably don't even know every since then that [TS]

01:16:11   has stuck in my brain and its kinda pissed me off and Mike grouper can have [TS]

01:16:15   those slippers as workers I need to find a way to make it work and they have [TS]

01:16:19   their good that's the big time go by pierce the junker my my year of work [TS]

01:16:26   shoes is right now in the socks period just one pair socks then it'll go to [TS]

01:16:34   it'll be flip flops sooner and you know like after WWC it'll be more slip lobby [TS]

01:16:43   then I'll go back to stocks and then go to slippers yeah well you got you get [TS]

01:16:48   the seasons they're just bare feet pretty much and I'm upset though at the [TS]

01:16:52   slippers I think the Swedish couple years old and that it was the best [TS]

01:16:56   person has ever had [TS]

01:16:58   and I wore a hole through them and and i couldnt today that I forget where they [TS]

01:17:05   live bottom but I went back and they didn't have anymore and I really wish [TS]

01:17:10   that I had done when I always think I'm gonna do which is what I find something [TS]

01:17:14   like that I really like just pull a Steve Jobs and by like 20 of them and [TS]

01:17:17   put them in a closet and then you know I never thought about it again for the [TS]

01:17:22   rest of my life the best chance eyes yeah exactly why not [TS]

01:17:26   although there's a thing of Steve Jobs who had a lot more space to store things [TS]

01:17:30   like yeah my wife she's like don't buy more but you know I feel like I could [TS]

01:17:38   take him out of the boxes you mean I guess if I could take him out of the [TS]

01:17:41   boxes at Liberty could you could put that all in one box I'm definitely one [TS]

01:17:47   of those habit people like when I had a nice going into the office every day and [TS]

01:17:52   I didn't have court I had like eight pairs of lands in grey slacks and like [TS]

01:17:59   12 blue shirts and everyday wear the same thing and every office that I was [TS]

01:18:04   such a weirdo but it just made so much sense to me to get out of bed and shower [TS]

01:18:10   and put that on that was the uniform I think that the slippers I love the most [TS]

01:18:13   wetlands and actually and then they stopped making them and in fact I go [TS]

01:18:18   through slippers this job is so hard David I've gotta go through slippery so [TS]

01:18:22   fast I have in fact I've noticed that the slippers that I've been wearing last [TS]

01:18:26   year too now that they're sort of put away for the warm weather I notice that [TS]

01:18:32   they're sort of worn through the joke about was a grandfather was a coal miner [TS]

01:18:38   maternal grandfather was a coal miner had mine as well i mean he also tied up [TS]

01:18:44   black long I mean it's just me stop and think about it or my father grandfather [TS]

01:18:49   and during the depression they have any money they would go out into the [TS]

01:18:52   backwoods of Massachusetts and truck trap red fox and that's how they that's [TS]

01:18:58   how they ate and that's how they got by [TS]

01:19:00   and I'm sitting here going to find on this watch if you was here he would just [TS]

01:19:08   laugh I know I think the one hand I think on the one hand my grandfather [TS]

01:19:12   would have been no I think first he would have been very very proud because [TS]

01:19:17   I think it was exactly the way he personified that American dream of I [TS]

01:19:22   want my kids to have better life than me in all my mom was a registered nurse [TS]

01:19:27   went to nursing school and her brother was like a trade school and was into [TS]

01:19:34   like electronics like sort of -ism that the gadget power still does he's using [TS]

01:19:40   the first guy I knew my life who had a video game system hooked up to a TV palm [TS]

01:19:44   pre pre Atari 2600 back in the 77th I might add you know but they both of them [TS]

01:19:53   ended up with white-collar jobs well registered nurses will be hard to call a [TS]

01:19:58   physical but it's you know it requires you know and education and it's [TS]

01:20:05   certainly better than coal mining and I think it would have been delighted that [TS]

01:20:08   his grandson you know a job that is you know like mine but I and i dont know [TS]

01:20:13   that he would have had much tolerance for my complaints about the my I can [TS]

01:20:18   vary blue-collar roots showing my my dad was actually really concerned when i [TS]

01:20:23   said im gonna go to law school he's like that's going around you he says you know [TS]

01:20:26   there's just no way you'll be able to be a decent person and a lawyer and it's [TS]

01:20:31   funny because he was totally honest when he said it and it has affected my life [TS]

01:20:36   in so many ways that that concern it's always in the back of my head and [TS]

01:20:40   and you know it points in my legal career where I could have jumped right [TS]

01:20:44   or left it always you know I was jumped right because of that statement you know [TS]

01:20:49   it's interesting how your parents if I had it I took an Instagram me put it in [TS]

01:20:54   here I took an Instagram the other week and I'll let it slide this is like my [TS]

01:21:00   thing and it's i I get when I get criticism well I just have a thick skin [TS]

01:21:05   that stuff side but that's the picture I took and its there's a hotel couple [TS]

01:21:11   blocks away here in Philly it's a real seedy motel if you look at the Yelp [TS]

01:21:16   reviews for its called the Parker spoofs it's like the type of literally is the [TS]

01:21:21   type of hotel we can go in and you know you can get it by the hour and it is [TS]

01:21:28   closing I didn't know this until after I took this picture but it was a picture [TS]

01:21:32   these guys taking mattresses out of the hotel and the mattresses from Mike seedy [TS]

01:21:39   hotel that rent by the hour [TS]

01:21:42   really pretty bad looking mattress yeah I thought was fascinating but I that [TS]

01:21:48   capture it is known grows up thinking they'll be one of the guys who [TS]

01:21:51   disposable batteries from a seedy hotel and and a lot of people are comments are [TS]

01:21:56   like wow what a dick you comment you know like I was making fun of these guys [TS]

01:21:59   and that I guess you could read it that way but that isn't what I meant at all [TS]

01:22:02   honestly to me it was just like a slice of life and I have nothing but total [TS]

01:22:07   respect for these guys I did those guys that when I thought as I walked past [TS]

01:22:11   them is as I had thought like when I think about my grandfather those guys [TS]

01:22:15   are working for live that's [TS]

01:22:17   job taking those potent down those mattresses out of a hotel and it may not [TS]

01:22:24   hot but that hotel is not air-conditioned you know i mean and [TS]

01:22:28   moving one is is hard work and these guys are moving and I don't know what to [TS]

01:22:32   say the least a dozen of them there that's all I meant by I thought it was [TS]

01:22:38   so weird that people jumped on me as though I was marking his people I just [TS]

01:22:42   thought like hey you know my my thought was that people were gonna read this [TS]

01:22:45   maybe this will help you appreciate you know whatever it is you do that is [TS]

01:22:48   probably a [TS]

01:22:49   love ice arduous then moving mattresses it's so easy to get in trouble on the [TS]

01:22:55   internet for history with an audience yourself and i just i just let it slide [TS]

01:22:59   but anybody who saw that he thought I was making fun and I really didn't mean [TS]

01:23:03   it that way at all I meant that I can I keep talking earlier I mean you would go [TS]

01:23:09   back to work for software developers that's what it do you know or you know [TS]

01:23:13   whatever I i would dig ditches if that's what it whatever it takes you know i [TS]

01:23:17   mean and you know I just think we're lucky that were able to get by without [TS]

01:23:21   have to do that stuff this point exactly side I'd be really lousy [TS]

01:23:26   speaking to digging ditches take a break and thank our next sponsor however you [TS]

01:23:38   guys know how is the best place on the internet to register domain name you [TS]

01:23:42   need a domain name in your new domain name go to Harvard are calm and start [TS]

01:23:46   searching they've got great tools to help you search they've got great a [TS]

01:23:49   great list of all these new top-level domains which have really opened a lot [TS]

01:23:53   of 1 into Word you know this that . whatever you know there's not finance . [TS]

01:24:00   coffee . local local is Bonjour but anyway there's a ton of these new [TS]

01:24:07   top-level domains I can even hope to list them all [TS]

01:24:10   however can help you get a new domain on any of them they can help you find a way [TS]

01:24:13   to get a domain dot com dot net all the classic tale these I don't even know [TS]

01:24:19   what you'd call those but even better that every every domain registry helps [TS]

01:24:25   you register domain names but however does the right way [TS]

01:24:29   are you know we talk about seattle City Hotel the top that the domain registry [TS]

01:24:36   business is in large part kind of CD attack the online equivalent of CD where [TS]

01:24:40   you go there and I am I gonna name names but you can't think of one that's a big [TS]

01:24:45   one [TS]

01:24:46   you go there and the site is filled with junk yards when you trying to sign up [TS]

01:24:51   there's all sorts of upsells check boxes for things that are checked by the fall [TS]

01:24:58   that ought to be off by default I really shouldn't even be an option at all then [TS]

01:25:02   you find out that if you want [TS]

01:25:04   DNS privacy so that your personal address in your phone number and said [TS]

01:25:08   you aren't listed out wide open for the internet for anybody who looks at your [TS]

01:25:12   DNS records have to pay extra for that however has none of that there's no [TS]

01:25:18   upsells there's no junkie ads for their third party stuff on their stuff all [TS]

01:25:22   they want to do is help you manage your domain names the right way things like [TS]

01:25:27   domain privacy [TS]

01:25:28   all that stuff it's all included and they have amazing customer support [TS]

01:25:34   truly amazing customer support they call it [TS]

01:25:38   Valley service so you sign up to be another customer and you've got domain [TS]

01:25:43   names and other registrars and you're already happy you've already seen enough [TS]

01:25:47   that you know yes I want to move all my domain names to offer but I've been [TS]

01:25:51   registering domain name since 1995 on this that and the other service all over [TS]

01:25:56   the web just give your stuff help that you know give your your support rep at [TS]

01:26:00   however access to these other registrars rehab domains and covered his valet [TS]

01:26:06   service will just move those domains will do whatever it takes to fill out [TS]

01:26:10   the forms send faxes whatever has to be done they'll move a mall near her [TS]

01:26:15   account and then all of a sudden boom all of your domains are all their [TS]

01:26:19   undercover with the best interface the best service [TS]

01:26:23   you have to pay for that that the valley service is just part of being a customer [TS]

01:26:28   and it's just cleaned up a hassle that is could be nagging at you for the last [TS]

01:26:33   20 years about I should consolidate all my dominique simone place really really [TS]

01:26:38   great I i have domain names however I know people everybody I know has someone [TS]

01:26:44   over nobody ever says you know what maybe I'll go somewhere else after once [TS]

01:26:47   you go to cover you like why would ever go anywhere else so great [TS]

01:26:51   there's a code that will save you 10 percent on a domain name at Harvard [TS]

01:27:00   missing links and that is in reference to the fact that the link bracelets on [TS]

01:27:07   the Apple i7 chips or only started to ship so use that code missing links and [TS]

01:27:15   you will save money and they all know that you came from the talk show my [TS]

01:27:20   thanks to have her could hover dot com HOV ER and use that code missing links [TS]

01:27:26   and filmmaking from here so what else we got to talk about I got a new Mac he [TS]

01:27:37   asks I did want to talk to you about that I got pulled in on the new MacBook [TS]

01:27:43   superlight twelve-inch [TS]

01:27:46   this is all right you did tell me you got that you did not tell me which color [TS]

01:27:51   I'm going to use my psychic powers to predict that you purchased spacecraft [TS]

01:27:57   but I mean it's something different but it's not cold [TS]

01:28:05   you know the fact that you can order when I remember when you have to pay [TS]

01:28:08   extra for the black one definitely have the plastic yeah that's true and it's [TS]

01:28:17   true watch right talk about the missing link like the space black bracelet watch [TS]

01:28:23   costs more than stainless steel now that's not more than just a color that [TS]

01:28:27   was not the standard size today that diamond-like whatnot diamond like carbon [TS]

01:28:31   what the hell is a diamond-like carbon DLC coating is a real thing and it [TS]

01:28:36   actually does add value you know it arguably does add value to about any way [TS]

01:28:41   you'd have to pay more for him because of the switch in my life I used to go to [TS]

01:28:48   work for the man every day and I had a 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro it's the [TS]

01:28:52   first the very first read the MacBook Pro and it's a great computer and it's [TS]

01:28:57   it's a it's a beast you know in the nice big screen when you're sitting at your [TS]

01:29:00   desk eight hours a day is fine but now that I've switched top I don't need I [TS]

01:29:05   have a right now I'm back at home and I'm working on that a lot and not using [TS]

01:29:10   the laptop as much but I still need one so I thought you know what I'm kind of [TS]

01:29:14   as a second computer this may work for me and I was a little worried about the [TS]

01:29:18   keyboard so I decided to to buy one and just see you know they've got a 14 day [TS]

01:29:23   return policy if it's just terrible I'll take it back but I stuck with it and I'm [TS]

01:29:28   gonna sell the MacBook Pro and and I really liked it I mean it's it's cool [TS]

01:29:34   having something so light and slam you know we joke in my life now is [TS]

01:29:39   Disneyland because my wife is a complete Disneyland nice to be Jungle Cruise [TS]

01:29:43   skipper know I can totally see you were probably exxon I was people waited for [TS]

01:29:49   my they would say I want his boat away and I'll tell you someday I'm gonna be [TS]

01:29:54   at WWDC sit down and I will tell you some great job [TS]

01:29:54   at WWDC sit down and I will tell you some great job [TS]

01:30:00   but in terms of jungle cruise captain ideal as I think I don't think Steve [TS]

01:30:05   Martin actually was on the don't think so but yeah there there's actually some [TS]

01:30:11   interesting people that are former skippers it was so much fun I mean it [TS]

01:30:15   was like the greatest job and had it through high school even my son in law [TS]

01:30:20   school I would go down there and work nights cuz I just needed money and like [TS]

01:30:25   the boats would get stuck at Disneyland it's an old right system and the boats [TS]

01:30:29   would derail you be stuck out there like 30 minutes and you know you can't do [TS]

01:30:35   anything in a way for the guy to come to yank the boat back on the rail and I'd [TS]

01:30:39   be like telling people how to break their leases and stuff but you know it [TS]

01:30:46   was so but now that I'm like I have more control my schedule my wife what's good [TS]

01:30:50   times all driver up there and then I like go like over to a quiet restaurant [TS]

01:30:56   with this new laptop and sit there and write contracts for two or three hours [TS]

01:30:59   and I really liked it but the site is it's a nice computer that the keyboard I [TS]

01:31:05   don't think is as good as the standards standard keyboard but it's good enough [TS]

01:31:11   well and it's why I feel like the using typing on the glass for lo these many [TS]

01:31:17   years has lowered our standard for what's an acceptable Keyport [TS]

01:31:22   get you know in my opinion and again i've talked to people that Apple about [TS]

01:31:25   this and they said you know that for the iPad like this around the era when [TS]

01:31:32   Microsoft Surface first came out and really kind of hung its hat on the fact [TS]

01:31:37   that the cover had a physical keyboard and there is a lot of speculation that [TS]

01:31:42   Apple Michael out something like that who knows maybe they still will someday [TS]

01:31:44   maybe they will with this iPad bro thats rumored to be coming but then I heard [TS]

01:31:49   from a couple of you is you cannot you cannot overstate just how good like some [TS]

01:31:58   kids are today [TS]

01:31:59   typing on an iPad and my kids who don't have ingrained habits for physical keep [TS]

01:32:05   keyboards [TS]

01:32:06   are so blazingly fast typing on an iPad you just can't believe it's you know and [TS]

01:32:11   that the long you know skating to where the puck is going is not worrying about [TS]

01:32:15   you know those of us with habits on old cookie keyboards my 18 year old can type [TS]

01:32:22   on an iPhone as fast as I can [TS]

01:32:25   are probably very close to us fast I can type on a keyboard as a touch typist and [TS]

01:32:29   knowing that she can type on an iPhone while not look yeah I've seen it I [TS]

01:32:34   believe it I totally believe it and it's you know again it just plays it it did a [TS]

01:32:39   little different than the iPad argument but not really is that plays into that [TS]

01:32:42   argument of you know back in 2007 2008 even 2009 as people who are used to buy [TS]

01:32:49   groceries and stuff we're thinking about switching like well you know when when [TS]

01:32:53   they come out with the hardware keyboard someone like me who needs the type can [TS]

01:32:56   type you know there is this assumption that anybody was getting by on and no [TS]

01:33:00   physical keyboard iPhone doesn't really type on it as the truth is there are [TS]

01:33:04   people who type lots of stuff on them they don't type the traditional method [TS]

01:33:09   but they still be able to you know O'Malley types a lot of his blog post on [TS]

01:33:14   his phone on his iPhone he does he he you know I've seen him do it he he you [TS]

01:33:19   know and he's I can't say that he's fast probably is like a teenager but you know [TS]

01:33:23   he's going as fast as he wants to be a writer [TS]

01:33:27   well with this computer the Retina screen to me was the big win cause I [TS]

01:33:32   really need a Retina screen i've I cannot use a computer without around I'm [TS]

01:33:36   always wanted a slim notebook in fact somebody wants loan me an 11 inch and I [TS]

01:33:42   tried it for a while and it just the screen I couldn't look at it just bugged [TS]

01:33:46   me every time I looked at it and this is great but that the really crazy thing [TS]

01:33:49   about this computer is I have this external iPhone charger [TS]

01:33:55   that's when I got off Amazon I think it's you know it's a medium sized [TS]

01:33:59   charger I got thinking I wonder what would happen because the power is going [TS]

01:34:03   through the USB what would happen if I plug the battery into the laptop would [TS]

01:34:08   the laptop recharge the battery or the battery recharge the laptop [TS]

01:34:14   so I bought off Amazon a USBC male to USB the old USB standard whenever it is [TS]

01:34:22   a B cable and and I just plugged in the battery to the laptop and it charge the [TS]

01:34:29   laptop which is awesome [TS]

01:34:32   smoky brick type things you had it say they have to pull it out but I mean it's [TS]

01:34:38   I think I paid like 30 bucks for it it's like I'm not having that try and say [TS]

01:34:43   what the electronic trading as I look it up and tell you about the it's it's just [TS]

01:34:47   something that you're supposed to buy to charge your iPad or iPhone you know it [TS]

01:34:51   if you plug it in to and it charges up and it's got I think two USB ports on a [TS]

01:34:56   female USB ports and you plug in the new plug it into your phone but the thing [TS]

01:35:00   charges up the laptop and it if the laptop to rate me and it basically [TS]

01:35:05   treads water you know it doesn't lose power and the battery goes out slowly of [TS]

01:35:10   this thing but I'm able to at like five hours of battery life to it so now I've [TS]

01:35:15   got that kind of hours you know exactly and then I did an experiment where I [TS]

01:35:21   turned it I ran it down to think 10% and then just played the fully charged [TS]

01:35:25   battery into it with the bed and it's very slow I mean it's not like charging [TS]

01:35:28   really fast but when I woke up it was a like 75% it was like she so it was able [TS]

01:35:34   to put a lot of charge back into the laptop so so now I really feel like I [TS]

01:35:39   can go anywhere because I've got this little battery in a USB cord and this [TS]

01:35:43   little light laptop and I can go anywhere in the world and just work for [TS]

01:35:46   a long time I feel like as time goes on Apple and and apples prowess at [TS]

01:35:52   designing a working with medals and miniaturized components grows more and [TS]

01:36:01   more you have to see their stuff in person to get and I think the watch is a [TS]

01:36:07   perfect example of it I mean they've they've done to commercials they they [TS]

01:36:11   have a website that they've had ups in September with hundreds of super high [TS]

01:36:15   quality photos of the watches every watch every band [TS]

01:36:19   from every conceivable angle and I can't tell you how many times I've got an [TS]

01:36:23   email from readers and listeners who said you know I was kind of going to [TS]

01:36:27   wait for her to point out and then I saw the watch and I was like oh my god I can [TS]

01:36:31   provide in order one on April 24th as soon as they saw it but only when I saw [TS]

01:36:35   it in person and I feel like a difference between the MacBook Airs are [TS]

01:36:39   all of the whole MacBook line and the new MacBook [TS]

01:36:43   you have to see them it when you see it in person it I I thought you know I'm I [TS]

01:36:51   I like the idea of a minimal map I was sort of like maybe I should have just [TS]

01:36:55   bought a new 13 inch MacBook Pro last year so I mean I'm not really in the [TS]

01:36:59   market to replace it now but it did make me think maybe I should have waited a [TS]

01:37:04   little longer because it does seem like something you know if I have read a [TS]

01:37:07   five-game Mac iMac at my desk and I'm only using the MacBook away from it [TS]

01:37:12   that seems a great and then I saw in the store and it was just like an emotional [TS]

01:37:16   thing takes in the sports car you know it's like so much smaller and I i use [TS]

01:37:21   the 11 inch air for years just because I like the idea of the smallest possible [TS]

01:37:25   notebook that you can with a full time with a full-size keyboard just can't [TS]

01:37:31   adding a blew me away with how much it looked more like an iPad with a keyboard [TS]

01:37:34   then a MacBook I get just internet portability and size and you get the Mac [TS]

01:37:40   operating system right yeah still is you know gives you a lot of automation stuff [TS]

01:37:45   just really can't do realistically with a knife it's it's great i love it and [TS]

01:37:50   I'm very happy with it except I I would not sell the keyboard and the keyboard [TS]

01:37:56   is different and it I'm used to it now it's like there's a there's like a happy [TS]

01:38:00   medium because if you press too hard on it or just training yourself because [TS]

01:38:04   they're just not that much travel so your bike over pressing but then you [TS]

01:38:09   start pressing lighter because you don't want over harassing you actually miss [TS]

01:38:12   keys you don't you don't get the full you know throw the key and there's like [TS]

01:38:16   a sweet spot in the middle I think I've got it now but it took me a few days to [TS]

01:38:19   kind of get used to my thing is I've never liked any laptop keyboard and I've [TS]

01:38:24   always appreciated that Apple does their best and really does like I remember a [TS]

01:38:28   couple years is obviously a couple years [TS]

01:38:30   Steve Jobs but at one point they were he was introduced in one of the new some [TS]

01:38:33   new MacBook and said something about their keyboard engineers and he said yes [TS]

01:38:37   by the way we really do have some engineers who all they do his work on [TS]

01:38:40   keyboards I appreciate that I can yet shows and it's totally not surprising to [TS]

01:38:46   me that there are some smart guys in women and Apple we've just dedicated [TS]

01:38:51   their dedicated to making kickass keyboards or making the biggest Asus [TS]

01:38:57   keyboard they can given this size constraints of something like the Holy [TS]

01:39:03   appreciate that I think I can do I know that I probably would like a quite as [TS]

01:39:06   much as the MacBook Pro which has more throw but I like my old leaven that I [TS]

01:39:11   used for years had less the road than the 13 inch MacBook Pro Keyboard [TS]

01:39:15   you know I got used to it annulment cause nothing compares to a nice desktop [TS]

01:39:19   keyboard in my opinion and just the ability to take it anywhere with you and [TS]

01:39:24   when it's this light you really can take it anywhere with you and that is [TS]

01:39:28   something special that that charger by the way looked it up it's an anchor I [TS]

01:39:32   got off Amazon its 12800 million power charger and its I just can't get over [TS]

01:39:39   that shit hundred-million piled up and try to put [TS]

01:39:47   but just the fact that an iPhone charger can charge my laptop and unlike ours to [TS]

01:39:53   it is crazy but that's where we are now I do you think he gets it you know [TS]

01:40:00   everybody digs on that there was an article that said the processor matches [TS]

01:40:04   like the 2011 MacBook Air which may be accurate at least I I got the upgraded [TS]

01:40:09   one I didn't get the entry I got the second tier but the but I don't think [TS]

01:40:14   those articles are really fair to it in terms of like memory access and the SSD [TS]

01:40:18   speed because it works fine I'm not using it to you final cut or iBooks [TS]

01:40:24   Author I'm using it for things like you know on the focus and and word [TS]

01:40:29   processing and email and so far and stuff and it's just fine for that stuff [TS]

01:40:33   it again I did and I feel like as much as you would if you're torn before you [TS]

01:40:43   see it it's like I feel like once you see them in person and had to settle and [TS]

01:40:47   it's like you can tell yourself in the abstract that you know maybe you know [TS]

01:40:53   just wait a couple years before I get a Retina screen MacBook I'll just get the [TS]

01:40:56   the MacBook Air because I want more I want a couple of USB ports or I want [TS]

01:41:01   whatever I want the extra performance in the way that the 13 inch MacBook Pro or [TS]

01:41:06   MacBook Air is still faster than this new MacBook go see it in person like you [TS]

01:41:11   just get this emotional and to me the MacBook Airs look suddenly looks so [TS]

01:41:15   dated in the Apple Store like nine Retina screen and its funny cuz I've [TS]

01:41:21   been depressed about the fact that the vision problems that have been thinking [TS]

01:41:25   like all my life i've been waiting for the right now I've always known it was [TS]

01:41:29   coming up we get these displays at a fight print quality resolution as I got [TS]

01:41:32   when I turn you know it the forties and my vision starts to go and I have this [TS]

01:41:36   thing in my lifetime so you know what though it's I get actually is the [TS]

01:41:39   opposite its like the red the screens actually help you know like the fact [TS]

01:41:42   that my vision isn't so good it's not that I can't appreciate the way I would [TS]

01:41:45   if everything had gone right now like in my thirties or let alone my twenties got [TS]

01:41:50   it would have been amazing when my eyes were fantastic and I could see [TS]

01:41:53   everything super super tiny but even with promise it looks better it's a [TS]

01:41:58   totally tell you know looking in on the screen is it just looks it's gross in my [TS]

01:42:05   opinion and I got this theory that you know the MacBook Air is this gonna go I [TS]

01:42:12   think it's you know it's just like when the MacBook Air came out the MacBook at [TS]

01:42:19   the time eventually went away [TS]

01:42:21   eventually the new MacBook is gonna become the standard machine and then the [TS]

01:42:25   MacBook Air is going to become [TS]

01:42:27   I think I think the formula is very simple and I think people over thought [TS]

01:42:31   this I think it's simply the fact that the entry level price once it goes down [TS]

01:42:37   it really can't go back up and the entry level price for a Mac laptop has dropped [TS]

01:42:44   $8.99 and that was a couple of years ago when they first added the 899 11 inch [TS]

01:42:51   MacBook Air right yeah it's been awhile but there's a reason why they haven't [TS]

01:42:57   dropped it further and you know part of the reason is that Apple just doesn't do [TS]

01:43:02   you know compete low end but I think it's so that when they make a transition [TS]

01:43:06   like this they don't have as far to go to catch up and I feel like the MacBook [TS]

01:43:10   Airs go away as soon as they can sell the current entry-level MacBook one or [TS]

01:43:17   whatever we want to call it you know the MacBook one port for $8.99 yeah it so I [TS]

01:43:23   feel like you know you're from now they'll come out with new MacBook ones [TS]

01:43:28   with new specs at the price that it's at right now and they can sell the one they [TS]

01:43:32   already are making right now for $8.99 and then at that point the MacBook Air [TS]

01:43:35   goes way but they can't do it they couldn't do it now because they couldn't [TS]

01:43:39   just say all right you know you should be able to buy a Macbook Air for a 99 [TS]

01:43:43   but now it starts it [TS]

01:43:44   $11.99 and even just the way they named it tells you that speaks in fact it's [TS]

01:43:49   almost like the biggest Telegraph strategically you know their future [TS]

01:43:54   strategy and that I can ever think of from them are in fact that the [TS]

01:43:59   enterprise $12.99 so it's even higher so it's got a ways to go I can't even see [TS]

01:44:05   them doing maybe maybe if they could get it to 999 I could see them sort of and [TS]

01:44:11   maybe what they would do at that point [TS]

01:44:13   is is dropped the 13 inch MacBook Air and only keep the 11 inch around at 899 [TS]

01:44:21   like maybe phase out the 13 inch first and only key and only keep one model and [TS]

01:44:28   the 11 inch around which is the a99 if they could you know once they can drop [TS]

01:44:32   this one did 999 but that's the only thing holding them back there and they [TS]

01:44:36   usually they have no sympathy for the people who need two USB ports or [TS]

01:44:40   whatever and usually they are pretty eager to get rid of old stuff but then I [TS]

01:44:46   look at their still selling a MacBook Pros with spinning disks and I'm so I'm [TS]

01:44:50   kind of surprised those are still on the market it's funny what they're willing [TS]

01:44:53   to keep around at the entry level I'm not sure what the market at this point [TS]

01:44:58   is for that the spinning disk MacBook MacBook Pro I gotta feel like that might [TS]

01:45:04   be of all the devices in the Mac line that so there's only the 39th Ryder do [TS]

01:45:12   they have a fifteen-inch to now there is no 15 into the spending despite spending [TS]

01:45:16   desk [TS]

01:45:17   somebody from the education but my guess would be education they're gonna buy a [TS]

01:45:20   Mac with being at the eleven of the 13 inch MacBook Air entry yeah I just don't [TS]

01:45:24   see what the appeal is of the 13 inch entry-level MacBook Pro across 1099 I [TS]

01:45:30   just don't see what the what the what the appeal is carrying all that extra [TS]

01:45:34   weight around for something I guess it has better graphics than the MacBook Air [TS]

01:45:38   I don't know some people would say probably mainly monkey people are very [TS]

01:45:44   concerned about the loss of that optical drives like I wanna watch my DVDs on the [TS]

01:45:49   airplane or whatever and I'll buy whatever Mac lets them do that I guess [TS]

01:45:53   that's why I don't know that seems crazy to me though it just seems at least it [TS]

01:45:59   seems on on Apple like to me for them to be worried about that [TS]

01:46:04   yeah i dont spinning disks it's too seems you know the only reason to have a [TS]

01:46:10   spinning disk is dead you know rip represented digital format yeah I S St [TS]

01:46:17   transition and I was old enough to have remember the floppy die hard drive [TS]

01:46:22   transition years ago I agree with him and then just a few years ago when we [TS]

01:46:27   went to St FL to me like every computer just got WAY better I mean if you're [TS]

01:46:32   listening you have a knesset in your computer yet that's like to go to SSDs [TS]

01:46:37   can't fail I mean any all disks trail eventually in you know corruption can [TS]

01:46:42   happen because the software not hardware but the stability of SSDs vs [TS]

01:46:48   unreliability versus hard drives its just night and day it's just the [TS]

01:46:52   craziest you know an end of the worst part is of all the things that can fail [TS]

01:46:57   people don't have you no good backup you know the whole show that because I know [TS]

01:47:01   did you guys are you know rightly so if there's anything to be religious about [TS]

01:47:05   it having good backup you know policies in place [TS]

01:47:08   duplication replication you know but let's face it a lot of people don't and [TS]

01:47:14   if there's anything that's going to fail it's hard a spinning hard drive and it's [TS]

01:47:17   like the worst thing to fail because it's the thing that could cause you to [TS]

01:47:20   lose the stuff you care about most I imagined myself like is this like [TS]

01:47:24   gray-haired old geek talking to some young and explain yeah it was spending [TS]

01:47:29   $70 per minute and it had a little needle that would touch it and if it [TS]

01:47:35   didn't touch in the right place all of your data was lost I just gonna look at [TS]

01:47:40   us like we're driving models it tomorrow they work as well as they do I truly is [TS]

01:47:46   a mechanically its mechanical marvel that it works as well as it does but you [TS]

01:47:52   know if you think wow that seems like something you might fail frequently well [TS]

01:47:55   exactly right [TS]

01:47:58   yeah I told me that number I'm staring at this 13 inch MacBook Pro I cannot [TS]

01:48:01   believe that it's actually like a current device that yeah I wonder if [TS]

01:48:07   that's a difference between new Apple an old apple I wonder if they're more [TS]

01:48:11   willing to keep stuff a little bit longer it's not you know that the [TS]

01:48:14   MacBook Pro line isn't too complicated but it just sticks out a little bit and [TS]

01:48:18   I'm not quite sure what the market is that have to be tried just switching [TS]

01:48:24   gears have you tried the photos out have you tried this whole thing that you know [TS]

01:48:27   what that's a great thing let's close out the show talk about photos but [TS]

01:48:31   before we do I have to thank our last sponsor and it is our good friend good [TS]

01:48:39   friends at fracture you guys don't fractured they are one of the biggest [TS]

01:48:43   supporters of the show I love them to death they have a great product [TS]

01:48:48   what they do is they take your photos you take photographs on your iPhone take [TS]

01:48:53   them on your camera whatever you want to do you take them and send them to [TS]

01:48:55   fracture they print them directly on glass I don't know how they do it got [TS]

01:49:02   some kind of proprietary apparatus that they take your digital photos directly [TS]

01:49:07   on the surface of class right there on the glass and then they ship them to you [TS]

01:49:11   and these fantastically clever things that are packaging material like the box [TS]

01:49:18   that protects it in shipment because it is class in there and then you open it [TS]

01:49:22   up and the cardboard that's in there is the apparatus you need to do something [TS]

01:49:27   like hanging on the wall [TS]

01:49:29   propped up on your desk anything you'd want to do they have an enormous variety [TS]

01:49:35   of sizes everything from little three by three type things to giant 23 by 29 inch [TS]

01:49:43   wall sized poster size sizes everything from small to large really great quality [TS]

01:49:54   cannot emphasize even with iPhone pictures cannot emphasize just how well [TS]

01:49:58   that you know I know megapixels overrated as a camera quality thing but [TS]

01:50:02   we've gotten to the point where Lake 8 megapixel pictures you can blow them up [TS]

01:50:06   really big and they look great what's our site and look at their site right [TS]

01:50:11   now so they're large is 15.6 inches by 20.8% extra large thats 2229 so really [TS]

01:50:19   big you can go really really big they've also got square sizes so if you've got [TS]

01:50:24   you know and let's face it there's a lot of us are framing pictures of squares [TS]

01:50:28   right now [TS]

01:50:28   squares go up to 23 by 2311 by 11 five by five really really great prints [TS]

01:50:35   program take pictures or pictures you framed as a square cannot say enough [TS]

01:50:40   about the quality of their stuff and how fun it is to get it and actually see [TS]

01:50:45   your photos somewhere other than on glowing screen to just hang around wall [TS]

01:50:48   and appreciated father's Day is coming up you can order an event really it's [TS]

01:50:54   just a no-brainer that we need to think about it he really don't it's the [TS]

01:50:57   greatest it it sounds lazy but I'm telling you it's the greatest because [TS]

01:51:01   your relatives love getting pictures of family members and seems really personal [TS]

01:51:06   is the easiest thing to do so go check them out [TS]

01:51:10   really really great stuff they've got a deal for the talk show listeners you go [TS]

01:51:16   to their website fracture me.com tractor me.com use the code daring fireball all [TS]

01:51:23   one word during fireball and you'll save 15% off any order and the prices are [TS]

01:51:30   great already but you can save more just by being a listener the show you guys [TS]

01:51:34   are ordering these things like crazy I can appreciate enough that's why [TS]

01:51:37   fracture keeps coming back to sponsor the show again keep it up but I cannot [TS]

01:51:42   say enough how much I personally endorse their product it's it's just terrific so [TS]

01:51:46   my thanks to them [TS]

01:51:48   marcar meantime he had his apps done and so I had all my ducks ducks have written [TS]

01:51:56   several books and I had them done with fracture prints but because I'm a [TS]

01:52:00   narcissist I hung them downstairs and like my family room whenever they see [TS]

01:52:05   like this a while but covers and I don't know I can tell myself but it makes me [TS]

01:52:11   happy just maybe I should emphasize photos but it really does work well with [TS]

01:52:15   images of any kind I know I've been in Marcos office and i've seen his abs and [TS]

01:52:19   they look great they really do i mean a app icons are so big somebody pointed [TS]

01:52:23   out recently but like a app icon the asset for it take up more space than [TS]

01:52:31   would have fit on a high-density floppy disk likes you can even fit in a bygone [TS]

01:52:36   floppy disk it's so easy to say back in my day talking about this transition [TS]

01:52:43   from bobbys [TS]

01:52:45   alright so photos this was another reason I wanted to have you on the show [TS]

01:52:50   so they blast episode I think I think just exactly what I said episode 255 Mac [TS]

01:52:59   power users great episode you and Katie go really long on on the new photos from [TS]

01:53:04   Mac and the whole iCloud photo sinking thing we don't have to repeat it here [TS]

01:53:10   too great if anybody out there as users great episode really great introduction [TS]

01:53:15   to the show and if you're interested in the details but long story short I think [TS]

01:53:21   all of us were kinda skeptical but that's the story it seems to me like [TS]

01:53:25   everybody for years has been saying I can't do cloud services that's that's [TS]

01:53:30   their weak spots I can never gonna happen [TS]

01:53:32   and they released this photos out and they've got the iCloud Photo Story [TS]

01:53:36   granted you have to pay for missing you have a decent number of photos but but [TS]

01:53:42   and I knew the new Photos app would handle libraries better than i photo did [TS]

01:53:46   I mean I always had the impression for the last year to that they had moved [TS]

01:53:49   their engineering resources to something new and photo I thought it was kind of a [TS]

01:53:53   lingering but whatever the new thing was gonna be it was kinda display your [TS]

01:53:56   photos just fine on your Mac but the big question mark to me was will design club [TS]

01:54:01   photo thing work and when I make a photo on my phone will show up on my Mac and [TS]

01:54:06   iPad no problem and will all this magic stuff they they showed off last year [TS]

01:54:10   come true and you know in my opinion it did damned if they didn't pull it off [TS]

01:54:15   and nobody's talking about it really i mean i mean we've talked we did a show [TS]

01:54:20   on it we got a lot of people listening to our show I have done this field have [TS]

01:54:25   only had like a couple people complaining about performance or clouds [TS]

01:54:29   think I mean there are a lot of people heading this thing hardware like 30,000 [TS]

01:54:33   photo libraries and it's more that the skepticism was actually twofold is the [TS]

01:54:38   first is general skepticism about Apple and cloud-based anything and then second [TS]

01:54:44   is that when it comes to photos I think so many people had burned out on iPhoto [TS]

01:54:48   and had run up to the performance limits like and you know bottom line I don't [TS]

01:54:55   know where the line is I guess it probably depends a little maybe even on [TS]

01:54:58   the size of the photos I know what kind of camera you're using to take the [TS]

01:55:01   photos you putting in there but it is certain reasonable level of photos I can [TS]

01:55:05   not like wow that's that's abnormal but like and probably just combined with the [TS]

01:55:11   fact of how long [TS]

01:55:11   digital cameras have been great so like iPhoto comes out in the early two [TS]

01:55:17   thousands but though you know I live in the digital strategy of apple and [TS]

01:55:21   everybody's only got hundreds of photos 1000 or 2000 and you know low in an hour [TS]

01:55:27   in the 2010 and everybody everybody might have 10,000 photos and iPhoto [TS]

01:55:32   wasn't dealing with that well and you know it's scrolling problems performance [TS]

01:55:37   problems just everybody with you know there is a vibrant third-party market [TS]

01:55:42   for utilities that would help you split up your iPhoto library [TS]

01:55:48   you know and switch between different libraries because you know just keeping [TS]

01:55:53   all your photos and one big library wasn't work working technically but the [TS]

01:55:57   whole idea and so that's a great work around but the whole idea of having to [TS]

01:56:01   manage all these libraries defeated the whole purpose of iPhoto in the first [TS]

01:56:04   place which is supposed to be that you know hey you're not supposed to just [TS]

01:56:08   throw out here is a place where you throw your photos and photos but the new [TS]

01:56:13   photos promised people were skeptical about that but I think the truth is that [TS]

01:56:17   you know quietly in the midst of all this hubbub about the watch Apple has [TS]

01:56:23   solved a massive longstanding problem yeah and it and it works I mean I just [TS]

01:56:29   try was running in the beta and I was thinking well it's the beta there's not [TS]

01:56:34   that many people hitting the server blah blah blah but when I released my wife's [TS]

01:56:38   libraries even bigger than mine and it uploaded trying and it's you know it [TS]

01:56:41   just works so I'm really happy to see that you know I I'm sure there's a lot [TS]

01:56:47   of smart people at Apple that knew that they had this reputation and this was [TS]

01:56:50   something they needed to deliver on but but it really really does so I got [TS]

01:56:56   excited about it and we we did a whole show on it and the reason the weird [TS]

01:57:02   thing is I was going to write a book about gonna write a book called photo [TS]

01:57:05   management for Mac and iOS and I had a whole lot on the Outlander is full of [TS]

01:57:10   ideas and drop box and all these you know third-party services and it's a [TS]

01:57:14   great was a great book but then I so using photos in like with this there's [TS]

01:57:19   no book here i mean just used photos do you think and that's not that's not true [TS]

01:57:24   for the pros I mean I'm you know there's there's a there's edge cases before most [TS]

01:57:28   people this will solve your problem I do think that there [TS]

01:57:32   is you know if there's a complaint to be had its that Apple's public statement is [TS]

01:57:37   paraphrasing but that they're no longer developing appetizer or iPhoto in favor [TS]

01:57:44   of the going all in on photos for Mac this is their new photo solution and I [TS]

01:57:49   think the truth of it is that it falls somewhere in between [TS]

01:57:55   it is a better it's certainly better at handling a large number of photos [TS]

01:58:00   without question I don't see how anybody could deny that way better to me as an [TS]

01:58:05   object of an object of statement on the subject of one way better than that [TS]

01:58:09   handling a large number of photos then I put order was I think subjectively it is [TS]

01:58:13   better at editing photos [TS]

01:58:15   you know the tools I cropping and adjusting the I would almost say in [TS]

01:58:20   comparison to iPhoto it is object of sleep better because like changing the [TS]

01:58:26   amount of light in an image just turning up exposure doesn't do exactly that it [TS]

01:58:32   it screws up other things whereas in this case if you turn up to make an [TS]

01:58:36   image to add more light it turns down shadows as it does a whole bunch of [TS]

01:58:39   stuff at once to make it better so they're they're bringing like having [TS]

01:58:43   more professional editing abilities and that you don't get with iPhoto site even [TS]

01:58:48   better for that they don't get the local changes like a pitcher you could locally [TS]

01:58:53   you know increase the light in one section of Reg sure you can't do that [TS]

01:58:56   anymore but I think you know if you're a pro user then and you really loved a [TS]

01:59:02   picture you're probably not going to be happy to know and you know I don't know [TS]

01:59:06   that there's a lot of them out there I know they're a or even if you're you [TS]

01:59:09   know semi-pro prosumer whatever you wanna call it I know that there's a lot [TS]

01:59:12   of people out there who honestly evaluated both Lightroom and Aperture [TS]

01:59:17   and preferred temperature and I i'm a long time [TS]

01:59:20   Lightroom user but not like any process just like to hold all pro very much on [TS]

01:59:26   the sooner side of gross humor but I like later and I know that it's sort of [TS]

01:59:29   like a funky you I but I like it and it to me it's not like an Adobe you I it's [TS]

01:59:34   like it just a unique you I thought was very thought [TS]

01:59:37   rural really like it but I told you can see why I even as a non at non [TS]

01:59:42   professional photographer I can see the differences in Aperture and Lightroom a [TS]

01:59:45   can see why people preferred aperture and those people are kinda left with the [TS]

01:59:51   short end of the stick hair because photos doesn't do enough for them and [TS]

01:59:56   they already had decided that they didn't like lightroom as much as a [TS]

02:00:00   pitcher yeah yeah I mean just seem like the kind of a trend for people are using [TS]

02:00:05   the pro apps from a family they're they're aiming lower I think what they [TS]

02:00:11   say that middle or whatever they call it but they are but for most people I mean [TS]

02:00:16   and I think that and I and I totally acknowledge those people are not going [TS]

02:00:20   to be happy but for so many people such a great many more people they were [TS]

02:00:25   completely baffled by what to do with their photos because they're taking you [TS]

02:00:30   know hundreds of pictures at one event on their phone and they just leave them [TS]

02:00:33   on their phone or they they figure out how to get it on to their Mac up there [TS]

02:00:37   and they got a folder somewhere and it's not backed up and they can't access it [TS]

02:00:42   and I just completely crazy and whereas with this new system we were at a family [TS]

02:00:47   party and someone was talking about something that funny that happened in [TS]

02:00:50   2006 and I was able to pull up a picture of it on my phone and it just like blue [TS]

02:00:55   their mind it is true I find that the way that they automatically you know the [TS]

02:01:04   the interface that they've come up with this sort of years you know the year's [TS]

02:01:09   level it's clearly you can't see what the the details are but just remember [TS]

02:01:15   when something happened vaguely you can go back there and you know you remember [TS]

02:01:21   it was sometime in August we went you know we went on a cruise in August of [TS]

02:01:24   2009 or divers who back to 2009 but down to about where August is you probably [TS]

02:01:30   see a lot of blue [TS]

02:01:32   on ocean and just are doing in there and you're going to find that photo yeah I [TS]

02:01:37   was surprised how well it worked in a magazine like a great interface for an [TS]

02:01:41   iPad or an iPhone and I think I'll I'm not sure if it's the best thing to do in [TS]

02:01:44   the Mac but when I started playing with it you know really it is pretty nice you [TS]

02:01:49   can just scroll you can see the year in a year as maybe it two or three inch [TS]

02:01:52   block of very small thumbnails and so you can go back year is very easily and [TS]

02:01:59   it's just you know it and having been in iPhoto with the crazies lag time for so [TS]

02:02:03   long it's it feels like you know jumping into a sport I do think too that it [TS]

02:02:09   plays into something that I've been saying for a while now and I know people [TS]

02:02:13   sometimes over used the word quietly quietly but I do think that they've sort [TS]

02:02:20   of quietly become and by but but not by luck not that they've done you know [TS]

02:02:26   backed into it but purposefully have become arguably the leading camera [TS]

02:02:32   company in the world or was certainly without question one of the leading [TS]

02:02:36   companies in the world that they make devices now they just happen to be [TS]

02:02:40   iPhones and iPad but they make devices that people use as their primary cameras [TS]

02:02:46   or if not their primary it's an important camera to their life and part [TS]

02:02:53   of that is more than just the today's world it more than just taking the [TS]

02:03:00   photos it is everything that happened after them putting them in a place where [TS]

02:03:05   you can instantly share them and having them be organized and the whole idea the [TS]

02:03:12   old school way and we still need to do it if you're taking photos with [TS]

02:03:16   third-party camera stand alone can you still need to be connected by usb or pop [TS]

02:03:20   you know the card out and put it in your computer and import them but the idea [TS]

02:03:27   that you need to do anything more than that to have them everywhere is just a [TS]

02:03:30   non-starter at least in terms it should be and now with photos a kind of its [TS]

02:03:35   yeah I i just i I cannot get over how little has been made of this but it just [TS]

02:03:42   seems to me like this is a really good sign that [TS]

02:03:44   you know Apple can figure out the club and they can do big data I think part of [TS]

02:03:49   it is institutionally I think it is truly an important thing to them I [TS]

02:03:53   really do and I think it's one of those things where there's a lot of people [TS]

02:03:56   that Apple all the way up to the highest levels who are you know pretty serious [TS]

02:04:01   about their photography I mean sure is definitely serious about photography I [TS]

02:04:04   mean I know that for a fact league as a hobby [TS]

02:04:06   you know it's like he's got a two or three things in his Twitter bio psych [TS]

02:04:11   Apple two cars cars sports in photography or something like that it's [TS]

02:04:17   interesting that the iPhone has a camera though you know when you first had [TS]

02:04:21   pictures on the iPhone definitely a point and shoot was a better camera and [TS]

02:04:26   now that's not the case anymore and I've got a mirrorless DSLR you know it's it's [TS]

02:04:32   not a super nice one but it's nice and it takes better pictures at which point [TS]

02:04:37   the Olympus PL five and about that [TS]

02:04:41   twenty-millimeter pancake lens with it and it's a 1.70 belief and that's all I [TS]

02:04:47   ever use I just use that pancake lens it's great but I'm getting to the point [TS]

02:04:51   where I don't even use that 20 on that is in thirty five-millimeter equivalence [TS]

02:04:57   is probably eat like forty ok yeah yeah yeah it's pretty tight but the but you [TS]

02:05:06   know just a 1.7 is great you know you get a nice blurred background of the [TS]

02:05:10   classical and like if you know later held cool advice on how do you learn to [TS]

02:05:14   be a photographer's you get a fifty millimeter prime and put it on your [TS]

02:05:17   camera and don't pretend like it doesn't come off [TS]

02:05:20   yeah i hadn t 50 ahead on my old can can t buy 80 bucks growth market has a $90 [TS]

02:05:29   new from cannon and you can get the Japanese version that doesn't have the [TS]

02:05:33   you s warranty for 80 which is what everybody I got the friend of mine had [TS]

02:05:38   one point four was $300 but he sold to me used I got it cheap and I'm in Orange [TS]

02:05:45   County cannons national repair facilities in early and like it's like [TS]

02:05:51   80 bucks and I'll fix the lens and I had like that but once broke like two or [TS]

02:05:55   three times because every time I let's seize the camera they would start [TS]

02:05:57   cranking out like it was a zoom and just do something to it but I get her to [TS]

02:06:03   carry that big ones I got the Olympus and now I'm going to the point where I [TS]

02:06:07   must use this phone exclusively @ this not because I mean that the pictures are [TS]

02:06:11   close enough for most things and having the geodata and everything there and [TS]

02:06:16   having it already in my library the moment I take it to me are becoming so [TS]

02:06:20   convinced that it's taking over for me is that it's my keep my my photos have [TS]

02:06:26   always been our lease in the iPhone world post I've only had two two [TS]

02:06:32   collections of photos the photos I took with my regular cameras which used to be [TS]

02:06:38   an iPhoto years ago for the last ten years have been in Lightroom and then my [TS]

02:06:42   iPhone photos which have been on live and I never bothered to put my iPhone [TS]

02:06:49   photos into Lightroom because just didn't seem doesn't seem worth while and [TS]

02:06:55   I didn't want to buy all wanted to keep on the phone and now in the new world [TS]

02:06:58   they're both it goes both ways I not only have my iPhone photos on my Mac but [TS]

02:07:03   I have any photos that I took you know that I take with a regular camera just [TS]

02:07:07   magically show up on my phone [TS]

02:07:09   well it seems like they've solved a big problem for me and I don't feel like [TS]

02:07:13   we're not you know and again it's just the way we human beings are where we're [TS]

02:07:16   we're more likely to spend time complaining about what isn't right then [TS]

02:07:19   we are praising what goes well but I really do feel that the photos thing you [TS]

02:07:25   know you can add a finally if you want but I really do feel like it's kind of [TS]

02:07:29   gone unheralded and it really and I know it's not perfect I'm sure that there are [TS]

02:07:33   people out there listening [TS]

02:07:34   who had something go wrong during the initial uploader the importers ever but [TS]

02:07:39   for the most part I there was a really clean launch and I think it worked [TS]

02:07:42   really well and continues to work really well I think I know what time that I was [TS]

02:07:46   blown away is to be taken screenshot with my watch [TS]

02:07:50   screenshot with your watch and it shows up on your phone you know almost [TS]

02:07:54   instantly at least since most cases by the time i unlock the phone it's already [TS]

02:07:58   there and when I want to send it to somebody but I'm on my Mac I used to [TS]

02:08:02   take screenshots on my phone in my care plan to myself to the Mac and then put [TS]

02:08:07   it into chatter email and in like a week maybe they just show a guest H supposed [TS]

02:08:13   to show up in the photos out and if you leave the Photos app running they just [TS]

02:08:16   show up it's so great when I was doing my wife's 36,000 photo upload I figured [TS]

02:08:23   the whole network was gonna be crashing and at the same time I did that I didn't [TS]

02:08:27   around the book I did a video I did this big video on photos and I was testing it [TS]

02:08:31   and literally like making corrections on my iPad and I've got my a MacBook Pro [TS]

02:08:37   Open there while I'm doing the corrections and they show up almost [TS]

02:08:41   immediately since I finished the correction and another thing that to me [TS]

02:08:47   is super useful now because I can use my iPad and sitting around the TV and like [TS]

02:08:51   everybody when I got a family event I shoot like 200 pictures of what's really [TS]

02:08:55   2001 she keep but I never have time to go through and sort that out so I ended [TS]

02:09:01   up keeping all these pictures and I'm going back to the old offense and just [TS]

02:09:04   like the iPad is very easy to see him and pick the ones you want to keep in [TS]

02:09:07   the ones you want to delete and even make cropping adjustments a little [TS]

02:09:10   things like that with your finger and it's the whole process now is easier and [TS]

02:09:15   I i dont im I'm just really happy to see it I was worried if I had one worry [TS]

02:09:20   about Apple the last few years it would seem like they had this whole with cloud [TS]

02:09:25   services in obviously everything's heading that direction in a lot of ways [TS]

02:09:28   and it seemed like they don't know you know there's a perception of [TS]

02:09:33   institutional arrogance or that they feel like well are making so much money [TS]

02:09:36   with other stuff [TS]

02:09:37   we don't have to worry about that I was worried that one day they were gonna [TS]

02:09:40   wake up and be irrelevant because they never got the crowd figured out and this [TS]

02:09:45   to me is like a really great sign that they're they've been understand that [TS]

02:09:50   I've got a lot of chores added me on the photo front because I'm not all and I've [TS]

02:09:53   still got my last 10 years of photos there also might think what I'm gonna [TS]

02:09:58   wanna do is export everything I've got the space I'll keep I'm not gonna like [TS]

02:10:03   to lead the Lightroom library but I want to export everything and then imported [TS]

02:10:07   into photos and have it there but when they are not I'm not sure about maybe [TS]

02:10:12   you can answer is what goes on when you shoot RAW and you import on a real [TS]

02:10:19   camera like like your Olympus you shoot right you should not anymore I used to [TS]

02:10:25   write what he did you shoot RAW and it'll take pride in what sinks over to [TS]

02:10:30   your iOS devices they did this as my photo take care of creating jpg [TS]

02:10:36   else though the way it works is the thumbnails you're getting our super [TS]

02:10:41   small that's the reason why you can see your library on your 16 gigabyte phone [TS]

02:10:46   and then when you tap on 10 hits the internet and it pulls down a bigger [TS]

02:10:51   version but it's not gonna pick down like your phone screen it's gonna it's [TS]

02:10:56   still going to optimize when it downloads the image was explained to me [TS]

02:11:00   in a way I i I discovered so you're never gonna get like the full-size image [TS]

02:11:06   downloading to your phone I don't believe there's any way to do it you [TS]

02:11:08   know they're gonna be did you go to max though and you're willing to the gyno [TS]

02:11:14   there's a setting I forget what they call it but there's a setting that's [TS]

02:11:17   like optimized photo storage and what that does is it means do you really want [TS]

02:11:22   all of your photos here locally and in the cloud or do you just wanna have [TS]

02:11:27   these thumbnails and will pull them down onto man and i know i on your last [TS]

02:11:30   episode you had the good advice that I at least one of your Mac's you should [TS]

02:11:33   definitely have it so that your whole libraries there just it in the name of [TS]

02:11:39   duplication so that as much as I like it I don't want to give up everything in [TS]

02:11:43   the cloud and say it's a phrase because why not have it [TS]

02:11:46   both places just in case the server you know that something happens on the high [TS]

02:11:50   club photo storage and your photo get library in the iCloud gets corrupted [TS]

02:11:54   well you still got your photos on your Mac and then you can reupload just in [TS]

02:11:59   case right murphy's law but what if you have to max and you want both Macs to [TS]

02:12:03   have your full collection if you import raw on Mac a does Maccabi get the raw [TS]

02:12:08   image to I don't know haven't tested that I know that Mac if both Mac and PC [TS]

02:12:16   or downloading all images you're gonna get a belief full-size images on both [TS]

02:12:20   Macs I would assume it that you get the wrong image but I i'm not question [TS]

02:12:26   because like for edits you'd want the road version wherever you are and I you [TS]

02:12:31   know and I'm wondering where the like your iPad is only going to get a JPEG [TS]

02:12:36   yeah you know and even when you pull it down and get the full version of it just [TS]

02:12:41   wondering where that jpg gets created it created on the cloud as a group created [TS]

02:12:46   on your Mac while uploading to the cloud and I'm kind of suspecting that maybe [TS]

02:12:50   get creative on your Mac which is why that blood processors CPU intensive not [TS]

02:12:56   just network intense and when you think about the fact that you can crop that he [TS]

02:13:02   downloaded version your iPad but it's still gonna crop the full version on [TS]

02:13:06   your Mac I mean there was some serious engineering work to make that happen [TS]

02:13:12   I mean this was not easy to think what else anything else you wanna talk about [TS]

02:13:17   this week and it's all good he could spend it's been a pretty exciting couple [TS]

02:13:23   months ago like Apple state totally agree and it's you know and and here we [TS]

02:13:27   are heading right into WBC witches you know you know you know like the first [TS]

02:13:32   half of the year this is like the peak and then you know though they'll go [TS]

02:13:36   silent for two months and then internal RAM back up in September again but it's [TS]

02:13:40   I'm going for the first time my life and going to WWDC my never been there before [TS]

02:13:43   now I i've always going to Macworld but you know I like Emma powers are not a [TS]

02:13:48   deal [TS]

02:13:48   but you know macro side around anymore now my new employer has a very liberal [TS]

02:13:52   policy so well you know Jason cell bridge I'm sure you saw a few weeks ago [TS]

02:13:57   he wrote was therefore I'm where I forget now it's a used to be but now it [TS]

02:14:03   is around here you know that the WBC is taking over it [TS]

02:14:07   the hub of the Apple community world whether you're a developer or not which [TS]

02:14:12   is weird because you know years ago you've never thought he'd never [TS]

02:14:16   recommend someone who wasn't a development that they go to WBC I [TS]

02:14:19   searched bill would recommend you try to get in the lottery ticket if you're not [TS]

02:14:22   gonna actually taken out in even try try but the but it's gonna be fun being up [TS]

02:14:28   there are so many friends are gonna be there i'm talking it I'm not sure [TS]

02:14:32   francis Taylor I think imma be talking to all count about stuff so yeah and [TS]

02:14:37   then there's a new conference layers what is the URL for the layers [TS]

02:14:42   conference I'm actually talking at that one is bringing your layers dot com but [TS]

02:14:52   if you just type players conference I'm sure it'll come up and it's like that [TS]

02:14:56   Tuesday and Wednesday of WBC week and it is literally right around the corner I [TS]

02:15:00   mean like whatever hotel about anybody would pick for going to moscow me where [TS]

02:15:05   the layers conferences is in its it sounds funny that it's in the mall but [TS]

02:15:09   it's a very strange Mahal up on Market Street on the self-employed budget hotel [TS]

02:15:16   I am at the Mosser and I don't have my own bathroom so [TS]

02:15:20   gonna be my wife said well all my you know you know sometimes I would prefer [TS]

02:15:28   not to be around people you know sometimes you just not good at getting [TS]

02:15:31   out the sole solve that problem for me because I'm not gonna wanna be at my [TS]

02:15:35   hotel at all so there's a bit like in the lobby but I think it's a great and I [TS]

02:15:40   do you know the Catholic upbringing and such that there's a guilt like I feel [TS]

02:15:46   like you know you gotta have some kind of work really you can't just gonna [TS]

02:15:49   boondoggle he got to have some kind of way to justify a trip like this but [TS]

02:15:52   there's so many things all competitions this new layers conference which still [TS]

02:15:55   looks great and it's they call it Design Conference for the Mac and iOS community [TS]

02:16:00   you don't have to be designer to go but it's certainly if you are this fantastic [TS]

02:16:05   thing that's great deal a tremendous line of the speakers but then you can be [TS]

02:16:08   there for the week and it really is there's no 2012 WBC is now at Macworld [TS]

02:16:14   used to be which is the hub where you know people like me and you can get [TS]

02:16:18   together we don't see each other very often I haven't seen you since macworld [TS]

02:16:21   some number of years ago I believe ya a couple years ago and that the difference [TS]

02:16:26   of macro gave normal users a chance ago and just kind of see what's new I mean [TS]

02:16:30   there was a need that we've lost with macworld and I don't know with somebody [TS]

02:16:35   ever is gonna try and fix that but you know it's still not a complete [TS]

02:16:40   replacement for Mac well but it's the best we got at this point you know I [TS]

02:16:44   guess I should say cuz I know people are asking I'd last couple of years I've [TS]

02:16:48   done a live version of the talk show during WWDC and that is on again as well [TS]

02:16:54   that will be on Tuesday night as it has been the last few years nothing to [TS]

02:16:59   announce in terms of ticket training but I think what I do and is why I'm [TS]

02:17:04   bringing up on the show is so that listeners of the show get the first [TS]

02:17:09   crack at it is next episode whatever no index episode next week I'll talk about [TS]

02:17:14   it on the show before I announced it under a fireball and so if you want to [TS]

02:17:19   get together and has sold I have to admit it has sold out every year so [TS]

02:17:24   if you want to get in best way to get in [TS]

02:17:27   would be to wait for me to announce not this show next week's show which should [TS]

02:17:31   be pursued 128 believe and quick download the show start listening and [TS]

02:17:37   then I'll give you the you know listen to the show and then you'll know where [TS]

02:17:41   to go to buy tickets for Tuesday night freedom to stay and totally go into that [TS]

02:17:46   account [TS]

02:17:47   hearing you not to worry about it I'm just really looking forward to it in a [TS]

02:17:51   couple weeks so I don't know what to expect but I'm gonna be I'm gonna be on [TS]

02:17:56   the road that week not gonna be hanging out in my hotel room with no bathroom [TS]

02:18:00   David sparks will need to borrow your bathroom so just be like in the hotel [TS]

02:18:08   lobby those of you who are coming just be willing to offer David you need to [TS]

02:18:14   bring like you need to bring an external battery pack for your iPhone and you [TS]

02:18:18   need to bring a port-a-potty and a toothbrush toothbrush somebody should [TS]

02:18:24   make an external battery pack for that it has a little toothbrush that flips [TS]

02:18:28   out the side I stayed at the Mosser once years ago from a cold I was they had me [TS]

02:18:32   like giving like the one of the very first sessions and like one of the very [TS]

02:18:35   last [TS]

02:18:36   and his back when macro when the whole week and I saw ended up having need like [TS]

02:18:40   seven days there and wanted to save money so I got one and it's great [TS]

02:18:43   because the sink is right next to the bed you can't just sit up in bed [TS]

02:18:48   pressure tees where is the mosque I know its next door to Moscow DME it's the [TS]

02:18:53   best I've never stayed there [TS]

02:18:58   yeah I just decided this year I was gonna go on the cheap I have totally [TS]

02:19:04   gone there on the cheap over the years and you know I did you know what a lot [TS]

02:19:08   of the cheaper hotels in that area there it's easy to complain about but there [TS]

02:19:11   you know there's widespread it's great it's right there you can just go back to [TS]

02:19:16   drop stuff off its nice but it when they tell me they say well we don't even have [TS]

02:19:20   any rooms left with bathrooms I'm like well how exactly does that work with a [TS]

02:19:25   community like bathroom floor rooms you go out in the hallway and you can you [TS]

02:19:30   lock yourself in there like ok I'm definitely not going to be spending much [TS]

02:19:34   time at the hotel [TS]

02:19:36   yeah but like you said that they are coming up there to to hang out I do [TS]

02:19:43   think they only did the downside WTC isn't that big compared to so many other [TS]

02:19:47   conferences there because it you know the Moscone West has pretty significant [TS]

02:19:52   limitations on attendance just can't make it bigger but there's a lot of [TS]

02:19:58   people who go now who aren't going to don't have WBC passes but nowhere near [TS]

02:20:04   as big as like Oracle world for GDC even the game developer conference some of [TS]

02:20:13   those ones that take up Moscow Nissan Quest have and the hotel prices [TS]

02:20:17   skyrocket there was one year where the new iPad event I think it was while the [TS]

02:20:25   iPad 2 still coming out in the spring [TS]

02:20:29   coincided with one of those conferences and I dunno got the invitation in a [TS]

02:20:36   press pass you know the typical Apple you know came out like a week before the [TS]

02:20:40   event and went to book and I like all of the hotels were like eight hundred [TS]

02:20:45   dollars a night what how and it was because of this mega conference so WBC [TS]

02:20:51   we didn't like that but the overall boom in San Francisco and the way the economy [TS]

02:20:56   is just on fire there has really driven up hotel prices that's the biggest [TS]

02:21:02   that's the biggest downside to having this thing in san Francisco is that it [TS]

02:21:07   you know for people who are on a tighter budget it it kind of stinks gonna be fun [TS]

02:21:11   now [TS]

02:21:12   couple of years ago like round 2008 2009 because of the economic you know should [TS]

02:21:20   show the world they would come help because it was a wandering fireball was [TS]

02:21:23   still really flying low to the ground economically [TS]

02:21:26   you be able to get like a fourth four and a half star hotel for like a hundred [TS]

02:21:30   and seventy-five dollars but there are a couple of years for WBC where there's a [TS]

02:21:34   gang of us who were staying at the InterContinental which is literally [TS]

02:21:37   right next to me it's like physically connected to moscow and we got we got [TS]

02:21:41   deals on Hotwire for like $175 and hits a serious not happen in this year is [TS]

02:21:47   nowhere near like that but it was it was fantastic you know who's really really [TS]

02:21:52   really did not have the budget for six nights in San Francisco anyway I will [TS]

02:21:57   see you there [TS]

02:21:58   thank you for being here let's get some plugs in man do you have stuff to pluck [TS]

02:22:00   I guess the big club for me just make sparky dot com that's where all the [TS]

02:22:06   stuff is sax party dot com your new photos from Mac field guide is there you [TS]

02:22:11   can just go to maxpreps.com and there's a big linked to it and sidebar but it's [TS]

02:22:14   just max market outcomes / photos [TS]

02:22:16   this is a two and a half hour screencast tutorial guide like make like a book in [TS]

02:22:25   screencast for ya like it was going to do a book but this one it's just one [TS]

02:22:30   outfit made more sense it's a look over my shoulder and learn it as what kinda [TS]

02:22:34   weird making it cuz you some of my you know I use my family at library cuz you [TS]

02:22:38   need where am I gonna do it where have 30,000 photos that I can use as an [TS]

02:22:41   example so but it's great and I think I just want soup to nuts and at the end [TS]

02:22:46   and two and a half hours which was probably longer than I would have liked [TS]

02:22:50   it to be but cover everything so there you have it costs 10 bucks now I on your [TS]

02:22:56   show you track your hours that you put into this is embarrassing know you you [TS]

02:23:02   you're you're embarrassed by this user [TS]

02:23:04   you spent 81 hours in the production 383 hours in the production of this cricket [TS]

02:23:09   so in other words I don't think that's embarrassing and although I think that's [TS]

02:23:13   the way film and video production is i mean that's why it takes you know three [TS]

02:23:18   months shoot and to a net 22 years of pre-production for Star Wars movie [TS]

02:23:23   coming out right like you you know and it does start was moving every two hours [TS]

02:23:27   you know it's [TS]

02:23:28   a long time but that 10 bucks it's crazy good deal but in other words this is not [TS]

02:23:34   David did not just turn on the screencast thing and start talking for [TS]

02:23:37   two hours which is exactly what I do with the podcast it's not like that at [TS]

02:23:42   all [TS]

02:23:42   imagine if this imagine if the show had gone on 480 hours and then painstakingly [TS]

02:23:46   we picked out the two hours of it they were solid gold that's what this is like [TS]

02:23:51   so for 10 bucks it is absolute steal and if you have any kind of interest in the [TS]

02:23:55   new photos pretty much makeup you know both that and the the the the sinking [TS]

02:24:02   iCloud you know everything so they go you gonna max party to get that and you [TS]

02:24:08   got your show over at the Mac power user show it real edad FM / end P U and Pu is [TS]

02:24:16   Mac power users yet about the markdown book yeah why not every time to plug the [TS]

02:24:27   markdown book would be your first appearance on the talk show I wrote that [TS]

02:24:32   book with Ed Smith and I i talked about mark down a lot on the Mac power users [TS]

02:24:37   cause I just think it's so awesome I mean under lawyer side of my life in my [TS]

02:24:42   industry runs on Microsoft Word but I like to have text in a very mobile agile [TS]

02:24:48   format I want to be able to open it on my iPad or my Mac or whatever so I was a [TS]

02:24:53   big proponent of using text until the very end and then letting someone [TS]

02:24:57   formatted and then I found mark down and that like made it possible for me to do [TS]

02:25:01   a lot of the formatting myself so I'm not the person you were thinking of when [TS]

02:25:05   you you know gave birth to this but I still use it all the time and people [TS]

02:25:09   were right in the show and say they don't understand it and it's not that [TS]

02:25:14   hard him and you could figure it out but sometimes people want kind of a more you [TS]

02:25:18   know a walker so any night this book and we did with screencaps that the whole [TS]

02:25:21   thing you know how do you make emphasis on how do you and we picked some of our [TS]

02:25:25   favorite apps that use markdown showed how you would write marked down and [TS]

02:25:28   exported to various things you could do with it and [TS]

02:25:32   I really need update that but frankly I'm gonna try talking to do an interview [TS]

02:25:35   with me and the next update as we put some audio interviews in there with [TS]

02:25:38   people that use markdown in their daily lives and it's a lot of fun and all [TS]

02:25:44   those books I do and iBooks Author are really big I mean they're like you know [TS]

02:25:49   you know they're going gigabyte size books because they all have like an hour [TS]

02:25:54   and a half of video inside so given those books just be ready to give it a [TS]

02:25:59   few minutes it down because there's a lot of data and I will I will tell you [TS]

02:26:03   that yes I would do it for the next version of excellence but I never [TS]

02:26:12   actually made myself available so I figured your business so busy lazy you [TS]

02:26:18   know but anyway it's criminal they didn't because it's really an honor as [TS]

02:26:22   the type of thing it's just a little thing that you never expected it I get [TS]

02:26:25   like long story short I made marked down and I should give this to the world I [TS]

02:26:30   shouldn't assume so good that I you know maybe everybody should use a nap put it [TS]

02:26:35   out there and and didn't really take off that quickly it was very slow and people [TS]

02:26:43   were still using it again I totally understand why but I get the little tiny [TS]

02:26:47   bit of of of timing that was weird was I put mark down out there and like the [TS]

02:26:52   next week was when base camp they viewed in an hour there just base camp company [TS]

02:26:58   but the former thirty-seven seconds and I know Jason very well I know I know [TS]

02:27:03   David you know everybody but everybody there I used to know everybody there and [TS]

02:27:10   all the comments and messages in Basecamp was done using textile denounce [TS]

02:27:15   thing which is sort of the same type of thing as marked down but different [TS]

02:27:19   syntax and you know just told within one week it's a mark on the set of textile [TS]

02:27:29   the mean obviously base camp was in development for you know I mean you can [TS]

02:27:33   get make absolute trails pretty quickly but not only [TS]

02:27:36   but I just had damn I wish I'd come out with the sooner because I bet they would [TS]

02:27:39   use markdowns and then just gonna wear people some people with you know use it [TS]

02:27:44   but then likes it was like the slowest surest like up take this slow steady [TS]

02:27:50   thing and then all the sudden this thing and everything has marked down built [TS]

02:27:54   into it and people are writing books about it and that to me is just crazy in [TS]

02:28:00   my in my experience that reason markdown becomes irrelevant to me I was using it [TS]

02:28:04   to write blog post from Max party which is great but what really made it a big [TS]

02:28:08   deal to me was the fact that iOS has never really supported rich text very [TS]

02:28:12   well and and even if it did I know I don't want to use rich textile ILS I [TS]

02:28:18   just want things to be fast and the sink quickly you know this is before photos [TS]

02:28:22   in approving its bones and so you know having plane tax that you can format and [TS]

02:28:28   then open on iOS devices I mean mark callous so it was like a solution made [TS]

02:28:34   for a problem that didn't exist yet I would disagree that the Mac OS doesn't [TS]

02:28:37   support for rich taxed I got a great support for its text the problem is [TS]

02:28:42   there's never been a rich text format that has been long term stability in a [TS]

02:28:48   long-term stability but they always get old and then you can you lose it right [TS]

02:28:56   that there's no credibility so even RTF which are to have a still supported [TS]

02:29:02   great on Mac but they never reported the RTF stuff to iOS so anything you have in [TS]

02:29:07   RTF doesn't go to iOS iOS is that that's the problem is I always you're stuck and [TS]

02:29:15   if you want to write on your iPad and on your Mac you need a solution and [TS]

02:29:20   markdown religious does that nicely in every it seems like every riding out I [TS]

02:29:26   remember when that was like a preacher selling point of a new app that supports [TS]

02:29:30   market analysis like everybody just support smart and it's just end it I [TS]

02:29:35   talked to my friend Brent Simmons about it because I know brent was on my side [TS]

02:29:38   but it's a little bit unrelated to mark down but there are you know around that [TS]

02:29:43   time [TS]

02:29:43   I'm late nineties in the 2000 there was the you know still was a living [TS]

02:29:49   war over styled text versus plain text or e-mail why should you be sentenced [TS]

02:29:54   I'll text email or you can hit him and I and the word is actually italicized [TS]

02:29:58   should you be sending plain text email and I was staunchly on the side of the [TS]

02:30:02   plane text that this was a protocol that was designed terminal era and it's [TS]

02:30:08   everything should be plain text and that way everybody will be able to reach you [TS]

02:30:12   know it'll look the right anywhere and clearly the plaintext side lost the war [TS]

02:30:18   for email and nobody even really it's not even something people argue about [TS]

02:30:21   anymore but it is really more of a case where we lost the battle emails just a [TS]

02:30:26   battle but long-term plain text has has 1 overall I mean all sorts of new things [TS]

02:30:32   are all just plain text Facebook is sort of a plain text platform Twitter is [TS]

02:30:36   definitely a plain text platform nobody even thinks about it anymore and when I [TS]

02:30:40   look at the stuff I wrote and Mac right in 1992 I don't know I'm sure there's no [TS]

02:30:46   way I could get it but I don't know how I did it at this point and that's just [TS]

02:30:50   gimme a reminder that you know the stuff I spend writing I want to be able to [TS]

02:30:55   access forever and that's another reason why mark down this is a good I think [TS]

02:31:00   people got thrown off because in the whole earlier species we kept getting [TS]

02:31:04   more powerful CPUs bigger displays better rendering capabilities better [TS]

02:31:13   access to you know collection of fonts cross platform etcetera etcetera so we [TS]

02:31:19   could keep making things can turn fans here in terms of WYSIWYG textile and I [TS]

02:31:23   love to design stuff but in terms of what the canonical storage format for [TS]

02:31:27   the stuff should be I always thought it should always be plain tax because that [TS]

02:31:31   way anything and everything that you do in the future be able to read it and I [TS]

02:31:34   feel like the way people have caught on to that now where things like Twitter [TS]

02:31:37   which was originally designed as I can sms platform and then turned into a web [TS]

02:31:41   thing [TS]

02:31:41   and now turned into a mobile thing and now people are going on our watches and [TS]

02:31:45   stuff if everything is just plain text every time there's one of these new [TS]

02:31:49   things that comes up it's all has to do is rendered text I'm just in some ways [TS]

02:31:54   I'm glad I can access those old things I remember I had a fascination with the [TS]

02:31:58   original San Francisco and I'm sure I used inappropriately a lot there was no [TS]

02:32:04   appropriate way to use it but they are used it inappropriately period I need to [TS]

02:32:11   be such a great Easter Egg if like that but not great Apple inheritance but if I [TS]

02:32:18   K prefers if your Apple ID displayed everything in the Old San Francisco fun [TS]

02:32:23   about it would be so awesome I anything else you want to plug David alright [TS]

02:32:29   thank you so much for your time you have to be on again sometime say hello to [TS]

02:32:36   Katie and I will see you next month [TS]

02:32:37   WTC alright I thank you I'm gonna stop [TS]
