00:00:44   the uncomfortable rocket surgery we take [TS]

00:00:46   a look at a movie with questionable [TS]

00:00:47   morals from various one of the various [TS]

00:00:49   decades of history and if it's the [TS]

00:00:52   seventies this time and it's john [TS]

00:00:54   boarman zai he wrote he directed it [TS]

00:00:56   he produced it it's hard cause keep in [TS]

00:00:59   mind that in the context of the [TS]

00:01:00   seventies there is no such thing as [TS]

00:01:02   questionable morals [TS]

00:01:03   yeah that well we'll get to that I mean [TS]

00:01:05   it's all such things from this I could [TS]

00:01:09   not think of a 747 is moving in this [TS]

00:01:11   joining me to discuss Zardoz the the [TS]

00:01:39   man behind the Fox Logan Glenn [TS]

00:01:42   fleischmann inexplicably has lots to say [TS]

00:01:46   about this movie so we invited him [TS]

00:02:12   yeah tattoo a is my anyway and and for [TS]

00:02:16   those of you who are not good or not [TS]

00:02:18   aware i'm jason snelling I am Zardoz i [TS]

00:02:21   have podcast 249 episodes and I long to [TS]

00:02:24   die just got instead is bouncing around [TS]

00:02:28   his recording studio but death is no [TS]

00:02:30   longer possible [TS]

00:02:31   I am immortal I present now my story [TS]

00:02:34   full of mystery and intrigue rich [TS]

00:02:36   entirety and chocolate and most [TS]

00:02:38   hypercritical it is it that he had a [TS]

00:02:40   ridiculous film so none of these events [TS]

00:02:41   will ever occur [TS]

00:02:43   be warned lest you end as I in this tale [TS]

00:02:46   I'm host by occupation and a rocket [TS]

00:02:48   surgeon by inclination Merlin Mann is my [TS]

00:02:51   hero i am the puppet master say hello [TS]

00:02:54   Johnny like Jason I manipulate many of [TS]

00:02:57   the panelists and events you will see [TS]

00:02:58   but I invented to for your entertainment [TS]

00:03:00   and amusement and you poor creatures who [TS]

00:03:03   conjured you out of the ether is your [TS]

00:03:05   smartphone and show business to all i [TS]

00:03:08   can see you can't see us but we're all [TS]

00:03:11   doing jazz hands at you I think you put [TS]

00:03:14   more thought into that little rant then [TS]

00:03:16   john boarman put into this entire [TS]

00:03:18   two-hour movie [TS]

00:03:18   oh good i had to do that i would like to [TS]

00:03:24   make an opening statement when I have [TS]

00:03:26   statements [TS]

00:03:28   sir I have things to say about this pump [TS]

00:03:32   I know I opening statement is I watched [TS]

00:03:35   a few weeks ago and I meant to watching [TS]

00:03:37   and have not watched the second time [TS]

00:03:38   except replaying it again and again and [TS]

00:03:40   again in my mind in the VCR that is good [TS]

00:03:43   mind and hopefully actual details but my [TS]

00:03:45   takeaway from this film since we haven't [TS]

00:03:48   talked about yet is I can't figure out [TS]

00:03:50   whether Foreman is trying to make [TS]

00:03:53   commentary about like the nature of [TS]

00:03:56   feminism in the change in society as a [TS]

00:03:59   comedy of what he thinks as the d [TS]

00:04:03   sexualisation and d masculinization of [TS]

00:04:06   society the nineteen seventies or if [TS]

00:04:09   he's laughing at everybody who thinks [TS]

00:04:10   that's what's happening [TS]

00:04:12   that's my opening i'm still I I don't [TS]

00:04:14   have an answer maybe we'll come up with [TS]

00:04:15   one boy I I'm just the the one quote i [TS]

00:04:19   found from Borman and this sort of said [TS]

00:04:22   it all for me quote [TS]

00:04:24   it was the seventies and I was doing a [TS]

00:04:27   lot of drugs [TS]

00:04:28   frankly I'm not even sure what parts of [TS]

00:04:31   the movie or about unquote [TS]

00:04:34   well it ends one of the last lines in [TS]

00:04:36   the film is as friend the character [TS]

00:04:39   friend is shot he see announces success [TS]

00:04:42   it was all a joke [TS]

00:04:44   so yeah I would suggest that has [TS]

00:04:46   something to do with your answer [TS]

00:04:48   I mean it reminded me of a love of the [TS]

00:04:50   movie head by the monkeys but more [TS]

00:04:53   coherent than that there is ahead in [TS]

00:04:55   this film there is a yes a couple of her [TS]

00:04:58   is stone had originally games with you [TS]

00:05:01   have to own head [TS]

00:05:02   I'm actually comforted by the experience [TS]

00:05:05   of watching this movie not because it [TS]

00:05:07   was any good [TS]

00:05:08   it wasn't not even because i liked it i [TS]

00:05:11   didn't know what brings me comfort is a [TS]

00:05:14   sense of stability and continuity the [TS]

00:05:17   stability of knowing that Glenn is still [TS]

00:05:19   my incomparable opposite haven't been [TS]

00:05:25   everything you've said about this movie [TS]

00:05:26   so far i am confident that we are still [TS]

00:05:28   like opposing pillars of competing have [TS]

00:05:31   I been supplanted as the anti Erica [TS]

00:05:33   that's terrible [TS]

00:05:34   archival actually in canada though [TS]

00:05:36   because your husband needs extensive [TS]

00:05:38   psychiatric care after having seen this [TS]

00:05:40   film he was mad he was he was very upset [TS]

00:05:44   with me for making him watch this film [TS]

00:05:46   now I just up for my part I just found [TS]

00:05:49   that this far as you know Glenn your you [TS]

00:05:51   thought about the the feminism thing is [TS]

00:05:54   just sort of saw it as a an incredibly [TS]

00:05:56   tired trope science fiction trope that [TS]

00:05:58   was that was tired even at the time you [TS]

00:06:00   know the futuristic utopian society [TS]

00:06:02   suddenly needs this manly man to come [TS]

00:06:05   and show them the error of their ways in [TS]

00:06:07   this case it happens to be a murderer [TS]

00:06:09   and a rapist and and in this case the [TS]

00:06:11   Utopia utopian society seems to have [TS]

00:06:13   women in a position of at least equality [TS]

00:06:15   if not not power and you know they they [TS]

00:06:18   need to be to be shown how how wrong [TS]

00:06:20   they are about the way that they have [TS]

00:06:21   have have taken things and it's just it [TS]

00:06:24   I've read a gazillion stories like that [TS]

00:06:26   and this was a poorly done version [TS]

00:06:28   thereof although i will say it wasn't as [TS]

00:06:30   on entertaining as i expected it to be [TS]

00:06:32   I'm on Team America I have not read a [TS]

00:06:34   gazillion stories like this and i found [TS]

00:06:37   it strangely fascinating [TS]

00:06:38   and I absolutely no idea what to expect [TS]

00:06:41   from this movie when i started in on it [TS]

00:06:43   and that is exactly what I got I i still [TS]

00:06:46   have no idea what i want to i watched it [TS]

00:06:48   twice [TS]

00:06:48   it's so literal that's why I wonder it's [TS]

00:06:51   so literal if it's really literal this [TS]

00:06:53   is the same animate deliverance he made [TS]

00:06:55   the incredibly odd Excalibur it's which [TS]

00:06:58   is not that [TS]

00:07:00   excalibur has levels of depth not [TS]

00:07:02   suggesting but it's it's so weird in its [TS]

00:07:06   literalness that I feel like it is [TS]

00:07:08   almost a joke that if you take it [TS]

00:07:09   seriously as a tired trope that he's [TS]

00:07:11   actually totally won the framing [TS]

00:07:13   mechanism is part of that but i think [TS]

00:07:14   i'm giving them too much credit [TS]

00:07:16   yeah yeah he was he was doing a lot of [TS]

00:07:18   drugs [TS]

00:07:19   yeah it seemed like an art film made by [TS]

00:07:20   the weird guy in film class who just [TS]

00:07:22   sits in the back and mutters to himself [TS]

00:07:23   and stares creeply that way that's just [TS]

00:07:26   this is what happens when you as a [TS]

00:07:27   director and writer are given too much [TS]

00:07:29   rope because a surprising number of [TS]

00:07:31   people wanted to see Ned Beatty squeal [TS]

00:07:33   like a pig [TS]

00:07:34   no I mean he got he got to do whatever [TS]

00:07:37   he wanted and what he wanted to do was [TS]

00:07:39   make lord of the rings and someone [TS]

00:07:42   wisely said new new new [TS]

00:07:46   so when did this instead I wish somebody [TS]

00:07:48   would have said no to this to that's the [TS]

00:07:50   problem to get the same guy writing [TS]

00:07:51   producing and directing you don't have [TS]

00:07:53   somebody to say those notes also is the [TS]

00:07:55   seventies so there's nobody there to say [TS]

00:07:57   that that's too [TS]

00:07:58   i I don't know enough about the history [TS]

00:08:00   of you know the trope but Eric I had [TS]

00:08:02   that same response of this must have [TS]

00:08:05   been tired even then that the feeling of [TS]

00:08:08   you know it i don't know i have have a [TS]

00:08:12   very weird soft spot for this movie [TS]

00:08:14   because I first saw it when I was an [TS]

00:08:16   incredibly impression about 19 year old [TS]

00:08:18   and it was the first thing like this i [TS]

00:08:22   had ever seen because i had a pretty [TS]

00:08:24   sheltered suburban life growing up in [TS]

00:08:26   all the movies i saw were with my [TS]

00:08:27   parents and they would never have seen [TS]

00:08:29   anything like this in front of me at [TS]

00:08:31   least so you know here i was in a [TS]

00:08:33   college basement with my boyfriend a [TS]

00:08:35   bunch of other people and with my jaw on [TS]

00:08:37   the floor just watching this so it was [TS]

00:08:40   it was a very weird sort of education in [TS]

00:08:43   you know seventies whoo sci-fi [TS]

00:08:47   and you know it and it actually held up [TS]

00:08:52   in some respects better this time than i [TS]

00:08:55   was expecting it to because I haven't [TS]

00:08:56   seen it since I was 19 but yeah that's [TS]

00:08:58   sort of like oh god is this all he's [TS]

00:09:00   gonna say like you know putting aside [TS]

00:09:03   all like you know just okay here here [TS]

00:09:06   the rapist is the hero I mean I mean [TS]

00:09:08   talk about I mean big flashing nope nope [TS]

00:09:12   nope sign but but the it's like i wanted [TS]

00:09:17   i wanted something a little more depth [TS]

00:09:20   that wasn't just like okay obviously [TS]

00:09:22   he's just doing more and more drugs [TS]

00:09:24   through the movie until the end is is [TS]

00:09:26   like you know justjust complete [TS]

00:09:28   performance art but anyway that might be [TS]

00:09:30   getting ahead of ourselves [TS]

00:09:31   it did feel I I died a couple of [TS]

00:09:33   thoughts one is a did feel like he was [TS]

00:09:35   like you know that last scene in 2001 [TS]

00:09:37   when we have a lot of seems like i can't [TS]

00:09:41   actually make reference to 2001 the [TS]

00:09:42   poster for this film to me and I think [TS]

00:09:45   the copy on that poster is something [TS]

00:09:46   along the lines of you had no idea what [TS]

00:09:48   happened in these three movies and [TS]

00:09:50   you'll really have no idea what happens [TS]

00:09:52   in this movie [TS]

00:09:53   oh yeah the trailer is brilliant because [TS]

00:09:54   it's know beyond 2001 ya be on here and [TS]

00:09:58   then beyond life beyond death [TS]

00:10:01   sorry not sorry i want to give you [TS]

00:10:03   chasing the 2001 dragon this is a pretty [TS]

00:10:05   good follow-up well but the more obvious [TS]

00:10:06   one is a is the time machine right which [TS]

00:10:08   I just looked up at you not in 1962 [TS]

00:10:11   version thing here with Rod Taylor very [TS]

00:10:13   well George panel movie [TS]

00:10:14   yes you could say the trip goes back to [TS]

00:10:16   you know the 18 was a tease or something [TS]

00:10:18   in the book with the original was [TS]

00:10:19   written where you have sort of [TS]

00:10:21   androgynous not in this case not very [TS]

00:10:25   bright they have don't have to retain [TS]

00:10:26   the Eloi don't have to retain any [TS]

00:10:27   intelligence there are the Morlocks [TS]

00:10:29   working for them on their behalf toiling [TS]

00:10:31   for them and then they eat some of them [TS]

00:10:33   from time to time so the relationship is [TS]

00:10:34   a little different but it's still it's [TS]

00:10:37   still the same kinda mechanism in the [TS]

00:10:39   1960s movie was pretty literal the other [TS]

00:10:41   kubrick movie i want to mention and this [TS]

00:10:43   goes back to lean and Erica talking [TS]

00:10:44   about the yes our hero he is a murderer [TS]

00:10:47   multiple murderer rapist but he's our [TS]

00:10:50   hero is a clockwork orange and also I [TS]

00:10:53   interested you don't want it reminded me [TS]

00:10:54   a lot of a clockwork orange which is [TS]

00:10:55   like [TS]

00:10:56   fucking violence but it's commentary but [TS]

00:10:58   it's shocking violence but it's [TS]

00:11:00   commentary a little bit of that vibe in [TS]

00:11:02   in here to either the violence here is [TS]

00:11:04   relatively muted it is don't you want to [TS]

00:11:06   see a lot of it up close and personal [TS]

00:11:08   yeah both movies and with Beethoven also [TS]

00:11:10   what an interesting Derek directorial [TS]

00:11:13   career though I mean I think deliverance [TS]

00:11:15   and Excalibur are both generally [TS]

00:11:16   considered good to great by a lot of [TS]

00:11:19   people but then he also did this and he [TS]

00:11:21   followed this up with exercises to the [TS]

00:11:23   heritage which is probably the worst [TS]

00:11:24   horror movie sequel of all time and [TS]

00:11:28   that's saying something that's saying a [TS]

00:11:30   lot [TS]

00:11:30   wow that's a high bar a lot I I was [TS]

00:11:34   gonna walk through the movies i was [TS]

00:11:36   actually this is a plot that strong [TS]

00:11:39   strong word for it and you and let you [TS]

00:11:41   stop me at any point are we ready to do [TS]

00:11:44   that now because I can do that now maybe [TS]

00:11:46   trip through it is better than walk you [TS]

00:11:48   know I i gotta disagree with the strong [TS]

00:11:50   word for plot i mean the plot makes a [TS]

00:11:52   lot of sense [TS]

00:11:52   up until about an hour and 15 seconds [TS]

00:11:55   anyway I guess what i can say is I walk [TS]

00:11:57   through the scenes and that may be a [TS]

00:11:58   strong word for some of the scenes like [TS]

00:12:00   I'm not sure what happens here whistles [TS]

00:12:03   there's a lot of that so there's gonna [TS]

00:12:04   be one usually want to walk through this [TS]

00:12:05   there's also skip over something and [TS]

00:12:06   steals a way Jason you miss that's gonna [TS]

00:12:09   happen a lot i think that may happen a [TS]

00:12:11   lot of you know I so we start of course [TS]

00:12:12   with the with the cheesy narrator [TS]

00:12:14   narration that I just reprieved at the [TS]

00:12:16   top of this show [TS]

00:12:17   follow the bouncing head of Arthur Frayn [TS]

00:12:19   I hadn't had a note that said that that [TS]

00:12:21   we're talking about how high the [TS]

00:12:22   director was there are probably a lot of [TS]

00:12:24   like a essays and and papers written in [TS]

00:12:28   college classes about this movie and [TS]

00:12:29   I'll just say now they should have all [TS]

00:12:30   got naps [TS]

00:12:32   it begins with these are logo appearing [TS]

00:12:35   which are I couldn't help but think [TS]

00:12:37   reminds me of the spinal tap logo and in [TS]

00:12:40   fact it and i find it an early example [TS]

00:12:42   of marketing where they're like let's [TS]

00:12:43   not just put up the name and in like a [TS]

00:12:45   regular font let's like make a crazy [TS]

00:12:48   like chrome logo and use that everywhere [TS]

00:12:51   so we get that the big sore hot dogs [TS]

00:12:54   it's going to zzz how could it not be [TS]

00:12:57   awesome like heavy metal we are in the [TS]

00:12:59   year 2293 where there is a floating [TS]

00:13:02   stonehead flop it flies around and [TS]

00:13:05   floats it gives the gift of the gun it's [TS]

00:13:07   like a little dispenser that throws out [TS]

00:13:09   the [TS]

00:13:10   like vomits out guns it's it's a giant [TS]

00:13:12   PEZ dispenser [TS]

00:13:13   I just love the quantity the ridiculous [TS]

00:13:15   sort of i don't even miles on it [TS]

00:13:16   ridiculous with this like hundreds of [TS]

00:13:18   God's like work guns [TS]

00:13:20   well it's gotta last time a year right i [TS]

00:13:21   mean nothing's coming back once a year [TS]

00:13:23   for the harvest I actually kind of like [TS]

00:13:25   that seen the the the angle and just [TS]

00:13:28   like that the all this flood of guns [TS]

00:13:31   just started pouring out this commotion [TS]

00:13:32   was just just it was something about it [TS]

00:13:35   was really compelling it was like oh my [TS]

00:13:36   gosh like that's that's a lot of guns i [TS]

00:13:39   give you the gift of the gun i like that [TS]

00:13:41   seen up until the dialogue starts yeah i [TS]

00:13:45   actually wrote and starred on speaks to [TS]

00:13:48   you [TS]

00:13:49   Zardoz has exposition for you you know [TS]

00:13:52   and i think this film this is the [TS]

00:13:54   earliest somebody says penis in any of [TS]

00:13:56   the movies watching this podcast and [TS]

00:13:58   that is saying something [TS]

00:13:59   the the key lines being the penis is [TS]

00:14:01   evil go forth and kill I was kind of [TS]

00:14:04   surprised i I really wasn't expecting [TS]

00:14:06   I've been told to expect so this is a [TS]

00:14:08   broader issue but it's i was told this [TS]

00:14:10   was a terrible nearly unwatchable film [TS]

00:14:13   and I i we can talk about whether that's [TS]

00:14:15   true i think it's actually a really [TS]

00:14:16   compelling film however terrible it is [TS]

00:14:18   yeah but I wasn't expecting the promises [TS]

00:14:20   evil [TS]

00:14:21   I didn't know it was I didn't know he [TS]

00:14:22   was going that should have been the [TS]

00:14:24   tagline quite friendly penises evil go [TS]

00:14:27   forth and kill I mean you'd watch that i [TS]

00:14:29   gotta say i would i would pay really [TS]

00:14:30   good money for his art oz PEZ dispenser [TS]

00:14:32   is seriously would shoot out [TS]

00:14:35   hey a seed unfortunately [TS]

00:14:41   Oh Sean Sean Connery is there he's got a [TS]

00:14:45   red diaper thing on like diapers [TS]

00:14:48   analyzers vendors huh [TS]

00:14:50   the the guns get tossed out from the [TS]

00:14:52   mountains are does and then and then [TS]

00:14:55   there's an interesting narrative think [TS]

00:14:56   your wishes [TS]

00:14:57   Sean Connery ends up inside the inside [TS]

00:15:00   the the floating head and we don't know [TS]

00:15:02   until later why yes he's shot us at this [TS]

00:15:05   point and so we pass out for a while [TS]

00:15:07   yeah the credits finish up and then we [TS]

00:15:09   return to Sean inside under a pile of [TS]

00:15:11   grain [TS]

00:15:12   yes I thought that the James Bond shot [TS]

00:15:15   was that though it in in a number of I [TS]

00:15:18   mean you can i'm sure we can argue [TS]

00:15:20   forever about what the worst directorial [TS]

00:15:22   decision in this movie was perfectly [TS]

00:15:23   that one for me was right up there only [TS]

00:15:26   like a 90-minute show the worst decision [TS]

00:15:30   was action [TS]

00:15:31   yeah well the whole movie is a James [TS]

00:15:34   Bond film I mean he isn't he's an [TS]

00:15:36   exterminator with a license to kill [TS]

00:15:39   he shoots the camera right at the [TS]

00:15:40   beginning of the movie in the prologue [TS]

00:15:42   oh he converts the woman tube to his [TS]

00:15:45   love it it's more like the prisoner with [TS]

00:15:47   starring James Bond a red diaper its [TS]

00:15:49   this is so prisoner e oh my god the end [TS]

00:15:52   is you know this massive kill spree [TS]

00:15:54   where he escapes with the woman and then [TS]

00:15:56   those that have sex with her [TS]

00:15:58   yeah it's a Bond film you like the main [TS]

00:16:00   character of the prisoner you don't like [TS]

00:16:02   me no here no well yeah he's interested [TS]

00:16:06   is all that he's not that he's not [TS]

00:16:08   likable in the in the in the stone ahead [TS]

00:16:12   Sean Connery finds people in plastic [TS]

00:16:14   bags there are a surprising number of [TS]

00:16:15   shrink-wrapped naked people 44 inside of [TS]

00:16:18   a stone head I think there's no I you [TS]

00:16:20   don't usually see that many free grab me [TS]

00:16:23   people have understood that there's like [TS]

00:16:25   six or seven in there again again spinal [TS]

00:16:27   tap in imagery i I've decided that the [TS]

00:16:29   people who made spinal tap the totally [TS]

00:16:31   took lots of cheesy things from Zardoz [TS]

00:16:34   absolutely never reason for the [TS]

00:16:36   shrink-wrap naked people inside the head [TS]

00:16:38   as long as we know you know mister [TS]

00:16:40   mister sharpie beard is the only guy who [TS]

00:16:42   to the Outlands and suddenly you've got [TS]

00:16:45   all these backup folks I think that's a [TS]

00:16:47   blue pyro beer [TS]

00:16:48   I don't know it looks like a sharp eared [TS]

00:16:49   to me Glenn yeah i got inside with Eric [TS]

00:16:51   I'm to America [TS]

00:16:52   yes well all that that that say that [TS]

00:16:54   looks like it's just pen it could be a [TS]

00:16:56   sir marks a lot [TS]

00:16:57   yeah he's had several hundred years to [TS]

00:17:00   perfect that thing and it still shocks [TS]

00:17:01   ya know you draw it on never comes off [TS]

00:17:05   your mortal its permanent this permanent [TS]

00:17:07   partner wasn't that the markers that [TS]

00:17:10   were scratching sniffing markers the it [TS]

00:17:13   doesn't smell like licorice [TS]

00:17:14   yeah i think so but they don't know what [TS]

00:17:16   licorice is anymore they just think it's [TS]

00:17:17   the smell of the black pan that makes a [TS]

00:17:18   beard [TS]

00:17:19   there's licorice but it's blue that's [TS]

00:17:21   the drug he was on [TS]

00:19:33   mail route now I return this podcast to [TS]

00:19:36   you i will say i did approve of the [TS]

00:19:38   continuous odd partial nudity throughout [TS]

00:19:42   this film is inexplicable in the [TS]

00:19:45   quantity but also the lack of erotic [TS]

00:19:47   isn't it was it was like we're going to [TS]

00:19:49   show a lot of bodies until we reach the [TS]

00:19:51   point where you don't even notice what [TS]

00:19:53   people are wearing because we're just [TS]

00:19:54   showing flesh sort of randomly on [TS]

00:19:56   different points [TS]

00:19:57   well maybe he's trying to make some sort [TS]

00:19:59   of point there because of course the [TS]

00:20:00   Eternals themselves have lost the [TS]

00:20:02   ability to become aroused this is this [TS]

00:20:04   is actually a theme and I can't believe [TS]

00:20:06   I'm gonna say this but this is when you [TS]

00:20:08   gotta do you guys want to walk eyes [TS]

00:20:10   smile because there's that scene where [TS]

00:20:12   they show him all the porn and and he [TS]

00:20:15   does he because they're gonna get him [TS]

00:20:16   around because they don't know what [TS]

00:20:17   erections are like in the future you [TS]

00:20:22   think they just drawn on with a sharpie [TS]

00:20:23   yeah he's not aroused and then he looks [TS]

00:20:27   at about what's-her-name charlotte [TS]

00:20:30   rampling she's gotta come out Consuela [TS]

00:20:32   Consuela and and and and i liked [TS]

00:20:36   actually that was even I mean I subtle [TS]

00:20:38   is not the word for it but i like how [TS]

00:20:39   cleverly that shot where he looks at her [TS]

00:20:42   and everybody's like blue around him and [TS]

00:20:45   all that but that is a commentary about [TS]

00:20:46   how like just looking at it it wasn't [TS]

00:20:49   titillating at all [TS]

00:20:50   I I you know I think maybe that is [TS]

00:20:53   something that inside john boarman is [TS]

00:20:55   addled mind what he was thinking was [TS]

00:20:57   part of what he was trying to do with [TS]

00:20:59   this movie glad you know what I'm I i [TS]

00:21:01   hate to do this but I'm going to also [TS]

00:21:03   agree with that everything happens to [TS]

00:21:07   everyone would probably master know the [TS]

00:21:10   costumes i actually I enjoyed the [TS]

00:21:12   costumes not I i agree that he was kind [TS]

00:21:14   of going for that sort of not quite sexy [TS]

00:21:18   lots of flesh sort of look but I just I [TS]

00:21:20   really like the designs of the costume [TS]

00:21:22   yeah themselves yet because they were [TS]

00:21:24   they were they were flattering without [TS]

00:21:26   being too titillating and they just [TS]

00:21:28   looked very comfortable and they breathe [TS]

00:21:31   was like oh I could wear those around [TS]

00:21:33   the house I've never seen so many men [TS]

00:21:35   wearing so much crochet though it was it [TS]

00:21:38   lift it was a friend you hear that with [TS]

00:21:41   their red sort of openwork crochet that [TS]

00:21:44   tied in the front and I don't obviously [TS]

00:21:47   spent too long looking at it if i can [TS]

00:21:49   remember exactly what it looks like but [TS]

00:21:52   it was I just kept looking at it like my [TS]

00:21:55   grandma would make that everyone else [TS]

00:21:57   looked fantastic for some reason it just [TS]

00:22:00   didn't [TS]

00:22:01   got him crochet is for potted plants do [TS]

00:22:03   it [TS]

00:22:04   there's also the thing that everybody [TS]

00:22:06   you know he's trying to show this sort [TS]

00:22:07   of the fact that everyone there's no [TS]

00:22:08   rawness in left two people can get [TS]

00:22:10   aroused and procreation is dead and [TS]

00:22:12   they're all getting bored [TS]

00:22:13   everyone is super androgynous as if [TS]

00:22:15   that's a bad thing like in this world [TS]

00:22:17   and Raja means like I like the women the [TS]

00:22:19   man all sort of look alike and they [TS]

00:22:20   dress like and it's all been sort of [TS]

00:22:23   desexualize to this sort of middle [TS]

00:22:24   ground that's terrible his you know and [TS]

00:22:26   you need a guy with still extra chest [TS]

00:22:29   hairy doesn't have the the star trek [TS]

00:22:31   gothic on chest plate on because he's [TS]

00:22:33   needed you know he's got his own chest [TS]

00:22:35   hair on the chest hair means it wouldn't [TS]

00:22:36   stick know there's also the use of [TS]

00:22:40   nudity and set dressing which was [TS]

00:22:42   especially disturbing is that one shot [TS]

00:22:46   of that of that statute it's like hey be [TS]

00:22:49   the one that shot is literally like hey [TS]

00:22:50   guys did you notice that the statue has [TS]

00:22:52   a penis on it because you should check [TS]

00:22:55   that out for a long time [TS]

00:22:58   is that what you made Joey that was my [TS]

00:22:59   example work I was talking about the [TS]

00:23:02   weird glass room with the water [TS]

00:23:05   oh yeah and stuff yeah that was that I [TS]

00:23:09   don't know it was wonderfully disturbing [TS]

00:23:11   their growing the dead people back at [TS]

00:23:13   that because i was at a tabernacle draw [TS]

00:23:15   people bag that's where Arthur Frayn [TS]

00:23:17   reappears after he's fallen out of the [TS]

00:23:19   stone head which hasn't happened yet in [TS]

00:23:21   our narrative and no no he's one shot by [TS]

00:23:24   step by Sean Connery and falls out of [TS]

00:23:25   the stone head so there we got you were [TS]

00:23:27   there Arthur Frayn appears and mumbles [TS]

00:23:30   things in a shot and is dead except [TS]

00:23:32   he'll be back we shot the army didn't [TS]

00:23:34   have to fall out that was part to follow [TS]

00:23:36   now he does have the very prescient line [TS]

00:23:38   here how pointless at which point point [TS]

00:23:45   a John Connor takes a ride in a stone [TS]

00:23:48   head back to an English country village [TS]

00:23:52   as yet is full of inflatable plastic [TS]

00:23:55   bubbles lots of plastic bags we got more [TS]

00:23:57   so we got more inflatable bubbles and [TS]

00:23:59   more plastic bags full of stuff in this [TS]

00:24:01   case plants and things everything in the [TS]

00:24:02   seventies came wrapped in plastic [TS]

00:24:04   they're all pretty much everything that [TS]

00:24:06   was being passed around in the the staff [TS]

00:24:08   room and on the set was wrapped in [TS]

00:24:10   plastic is amazing expand [TS]

00:24:11   you need to that's where he got the idea [TS]

00:24:14   probably this is one of those places [TS]

00:24:15   where I'm not quite sure what happens [TS]

00:24:17   next the next thing that I wrote down is [TS]

00:24:18   where he there's that scene where [TS]

00:24:20   there's the heat like investigates [TS]

00:24:21   jack-in-the-box and there are 12 boxing [TS]

00:24:24   from elf and there's a bunch of clocks [TS]

00:24:25   he said he wants to shoot i'm glad you [TS]

00:24:28   didn't shoot the jack-in-the-box [TS]

00:24:29   actually I wish he had shot the [TS]

00:24:30   jack-in-the-box we had a spinning [TS]

00:24:32   schedule for the Apple watch and he had [TS]

00:24:33   to go upstairs and put it on and then [TS]

00:24:35   you know let's give the holographic [TS]

00:24:37   keeps doing the thing where the the [TS]

00:24:38   apple watch like shoots the projection [TS]

00:24:40   everywhere and he keeps covering it and [TS]

00:24:42   great another unit and the whole time [TS]

00:24:44   like every time I see that all i think [TS]

00:24:47   is a wise guy yeah and because he keeps [TS]

00:24:49   doing it over and over is like Mira no [TS]

00:24:52   no you still there anyways never seen [TS]

00:24:55   these are savage he's never seen a [TS]

00:24:56   hologram ring before one of the themes [TS]

00:24:58   of this film if we can call it that is [TS]

00:25:00   sort of the evolution of mankind what [TS]

00:25:02   comes next after homo sapiens and I [TS]

00:25:05   think here's where it introduces he [TS]

00:25:07   walks into the room and it sort of [TS]

00:25:08   cleverly introduces that idea when he [TS]

00:25:10   walks past for some reason our frames [TS]

00:25:12   painted on his wall [TS]

00:25:14   you know me and fall and Homo sapiens [TS]

00:25:16   and then there's the eternal and then [TS]

00:25:18   there's a big question mark [TS]

00:25:20   you know I'm actually surprised there [TS]

00:25:21   are neon lights flashing her what kind [TS]

00:25:25   of drawing Sean Connery there's so like [TS]

00:25:29   I said there's this is an English manor [TS]

00:25:30   house it did remind me a little bit of [TS]

00:25:31   the prisoner there are lots of plastic [TS]

00:25:33   bubbles and a pyramid prisoners plastic [TS]

00:25:34   bubbles to there's a lake he sees a [TS]

00:25:38   woman he tries to shoot her cuz that's [TS]

00:25:41   which is actually strange because [TS]

00:25:42   shouldn't he tried to rape her because [TS]

00:25:43   that's sort of his job with women he [TS]

00:25:45   shoots the Mandrake's the women anyway [TS]

00:25:46   he feels pain and throws his gun into [TS]

00:25:49   the water no my good that was my good [TS]

00:25:51   gun and explains that she asked if he [TS]

00:25:54   thinks he said he's dead and and then [TS]

00:25:57   there's a group of that that's a weird [TS]

00:25:59   scene and then they're all debating the [TS]

00:26:00   brutal which we learn is what the name [TS]

00:26:02   is for the people outside the brutal and [TS]

00:26:06   we meet our our our women from the [TS]

00:26:08   village including Consuela who speaking [TS]

00:26:10   of Lord of the Rings reminded me of its [TS]

00:26:13   Charlotte Rampling write me a lot of [TS]

00:26:14   Kate planchette actually mmm [TS]

00:26:16   I will point out at this moment to that [TS]

00:26:19   Charlotte Rampling i believe is the only [TS]

00:26:20   person behind besides Sean Connery who [TS]

00:26:23   survived this film [TS]

00:26:25   well no no no no I'm sorry the actor of [TS]

00:26:29   the actor [TS]

00:26:31   oh my god she's good she's gonna hurt us [TS]

00:26:35   and he's actually very good machines [TS]

00:26:36   very good and she went on to be in [TS]

00:26:38   everything i would say that the acting [TS]

00:26:39   in this film considering everything else [TS]

00:26:41   about the film is actually pretty solid [TS]

00:26:43   oh yeah even you her friend is you know [TS]

00:26:45   it's it's a choice but he does it well i [TS]

00:26:49   will go to the vortex you're hurting me [TS]

00:26:53   this is a very strange this is so we're [TS]

00:26:55   learning we gotta download of all the [TS]

00:26:56   weird terminology weird seventies sci-fi [TS]

00:26:59   film terminology and in that way it felt [TS]

00:27:01   it felt kind of at home to me because [TS]

00:27:03   I've seen a bunch of these movies in [TS]

00:27:04   there they're all kind of Spacey like [TS]

00:27:06   this where they're like just a little [TS]

00:27:09   you takes sci-fi tropes and then you add [TS]

00:27:11   some hippie stuff and you say wound now [TS]

00:27:14   it's cool cutting-edge sci-fi stuff for [TS]

00:27:18   about four years and then it's dated so [TS]

00:27:21   what's the things about the vortex for [TS]

00:27:22   texts for their in the vortex are never [TS]

00:27:25   clear on this terminology as the movie [TS]

00:27:27   goes along and how it actually makes any [TS]

00:27:28   sense but we get to learn about what [TS]

00:27:32   Sean Connery's job is which is they are [TS]

00:27:35   the chosen so they're the only ones were [TS]

00:27:37   supposed to pass on their genetic [TS]

00:27:39   material so they wait the women they [TS]

00:27:41   kill all the men and are we learn about [TS]

00:27:44   Arthur Frayn our friend with a sharpie [TS]

00:27:46   facial hair in the beginning he was the [TS]

00:27:49   only one who wanted to run the Outlands [TS]

00:27:51   he's an artist he does it with [TS]

00:27:53   imagination he's like Doug inning [TS]

00:27:55   Doug Henning had better have magic and [TS]

00:28:00   fascination and fantasy sardos instructs [TS]

00:28:03   me to break into the broadcast right now [TS]

00:29:41   being comfortable it's amazing how even [TS]

00:29:44   though this is hundreds of years in the [TS]

00:29:45   future there apparently is a really mine [TS]

00:29:48   or something that they go to to create [TS]

00:29:50   the world's endless supply of sort of [TS]

00:29:52   business casual wear with outside the [TS]

00:29:55   men are running in these techniques [TS]

00:29:57   tailor-made suits that are afraid but [TS]

00:29:59   apparently they've endless supply of [TS]

00:30:00   them one of my notes is that and I [TS]

00:30:03   actually think this is a clever thing is [TS]

00:30:05   that Sean Connery and his guys are like [TS]

00:30:06   sort of like bare-chested wearing their [TS]

00:30:08   diaper things but the people that their [TS]

00:30:11   menacing are all wearing like frayed [TS]

00:30:13   like blazers and button up shirts and [TS]

00:30:18   things like that like their and living [TS]

00:30:20   in the ruins of recognizable sort of [TS]

00:30:22   like suburbs or cities so I think that's [TS]

00:30:24   fascinating like you get the sense [TS]

00:30:25   initially that these are like outlaws in [TS]

00:30:27   the countryside and then but the people [TS]

00:30:29   that they're harassing are like just the [TS]

00:30:31   regular old survivors of this [TS]

00:30:33   catastrophe who we see later there's [TS]

00:30:36   also that scene where they flash back to [TS]

00:30:38   right after they set up the the shield [TS]

00:30:41   and they're all like banging on the [TS]

00:30:42   outside of the shield [TS]

00:30:43   old at the at the rich and powerful and [TS]

00:30:46   science ii who have gone inside this [TS]

00:30:49   little bubble who were just like [TS]

00:30:51   ignoring them and doing their stuff and [TS]

00:30:54   I i like that i like i like that that [TS]

00:30:56   aspect of it that it wasn't all just [TS]

00:30:57   like total chaos outside the bubble [TS]

00:30:59   there like you get the impression that [TS]

00:31:01   maybe there are people who are kind of [TS]

00:31:03   living a hard life but living life and [TS]

00:31:06   and then that makes the the the the Sean [TS]

00:31:10   Connery and his guys even worse because [TS]

00:31:12   the these are like you know they're just [TS]

00:31:13   randomly shooting all those people [TS]

00:31:15   well I'm trying to figure how many [TS]

00:31:16   people there are in the planet because I [TS]

00:31:18   there's apparently a lot of them they [TS]

00:31:20   all have access to suits and clothing [TS]

00:31:21   and but there's enough that they can be [TS]

00:31:24   killed randomly and constantly with the [TS]

00:31:26   thousands of guns at Sardis belches [TS]

00:31:28   forth and yet not enough to escape or [TS]

00:31:32   form any kind of opposition to men with [TS]

00:31:34   guns [TS]

00:31:35   I don't know its metaphor I guess you [TS]

00:31:38   can't equate their feelings with hours [TS]

00:31:39   behind this true what would regard to [TS]

00:31:42   the the the refreshing clothing within [TS]

00:31:46   the vortex I I think they're pretty [TS]

00:31:47   self-sufficient inside the vortex I mean [TS]

00:31:49   they're capable of [TS]

00:31:51   they were previously capable of growing [TS]

00:31:53   all their own food but because of the [TS]

00:31:55   add the apathy disease that spreading [TS]

00:31:57   they have to i can't believe i spent [TS]

00:31:58   this much time thinking about this since [TS]

00:31:59   they don't have enough people to to [TS]

00:32:03   continue to work to feed the apathetic [TS]

00:32:06   so that that's when they have to begin [TS]

00:32:08   to dream that that's when they have to [TS]

00:32:10   get the the exterminators that to get [TS]

00:32:13   the other brutal's to grow food for them [TS]

00:32:14   which is what sets Connery over the edge [TS]

00:32:17   eventually but so presumably they're [TS]

00:32:19   they're able date they normally eat meat [TS]

00:32:21   and so they they must have wool now and [TS]

00:32:25   one they'll work right that's one of the [TS]

00:32:26   things that uh that the friend [TS]

00:32:28   complaints about is like a tired of [TS]

00:32:29   working about working for hundreds of [TS]

00:32:31   years feeding myself and server my right [TS]

00:32:33   i mean so they they they are not you [TS]

00:32:35   know they don't have a a slave class [TS]

00:32:38   inside the bubble it seems they're like [TS]

00:32:40   a hippie commune kind of place right in [TS]

00:32:43   fact they're ticked off at him for [TS]

00:32:44   getting a sean connery to serve the [TS]

00:32:46   superyacht potatoes potatoes potatoes [TS]

00:32:48   potatoes [TS]

00:32:51   oh I like the line again really really [TS]

00:32:55   on the nose which is you know that [TS]

00:32:58   saying if looks could kill with though [TS]

00:33:00   it's been hundreds hundreds of years we [TS]

00:33:01   have saying from the outside well it's a [TS]

00:33:03   saying and here they can huh [TS]

00:33:06   there's a little too little too much [TS]

00:33:07   well here they can because that's like [TS]

00:33:09   psychic power is a is okay got it got it [TS]

00:33:13   i did like the bit where they're doing [TS]

00:33:14   the mental imagery the recovering it for [TS]

00:33:16   Sean Connery and and then they like oh [TS]

00:33:18   let's see what Arthur frame was thinking [TS]

00:33:19   and we find it is called the tabernacle [TS]

00:33:22   I don't think we find it at this point [TS]

00:33:23   it's called that their computer pulls up [TS]

00:33:25   Arthur free apparently they're [TS]

00:33:27   constantly it's like it's like Netflix [TS]

00:33:29   without comcast interruption [TS]

00:33:31   it's constantly streaming images from [TS]

00:33:32   our brains so that we can be [TS]

00:33:34   reconstructed later in this in this [TS]

00:33:36   glorious future and it's just our thirds [TS]

00:33:39   of his point of view falling from the [TS]

00:33:41   head it's really lovely actually it's [TS]

00:33:42   not as pretty show himself yeah [TS]

00:33:45   also it's like itself images just like [TS]

00:33:47   Sean Connery can see himself while he's [TS]

00:33:50   no shooting people and raping women also [TS]

00:33:52   it's the mind's eye as opposed to like [TS]

00:33:54   actual point of view [TS]

00:33:55   yeah if you're lazy directing it can you [TS]

00:33:57   see these erection here we also have so [TS]

00:33:59   I'm in this section we've got the [TS]

00:34:01   oversized clock that he holds and maybe [TS]

00:34:04   all the monkey doesn't know how to tell [TS]

00:34:05   time [TS]

00:34:06   there's the pyramid that's got the [TS]

00:34:07   mirror we have the guy saying saying [TS]

00:34:09   actual words but they've dubbed him in [TS]

00:34:11   to make him sound like he's saying [TS]

00:34:12   nonsense [TS]

00:34:13   what was that about they never actually [TS]

00:34:15   all the end it's the future [TS]

00:34:17   hey it's mike that's like their secret [TS]

00:34:19   language or something that they do a [TS]

00:34:20   scene later where they're all saying [TS]

00:34:22   like but yeah there's a bit of em but in [TS]

00:34:25   this case I get the feeling that he's [TS]

00:34:27   reciting some sort of poem he's [TS]

00:34:29   constructed because everybody applauds [TS]

00:34:30   afterwards yeah but they dumped it all [TS]

00:34:32   out and replace it with the nonsense we [TS]

00:34:34   want that was actually clever i did too [TS]

00:34:36   but what I didn't think that was clever [TS]

00:34:37   you have a one-word explanation for that [TS]

00:34:39   in its drugs i also well I had no down [TS]

00:34:45   that was a the this section of the movie [TS]

00:34:47   reminded me of terry gilliam movie but [TS]

00:34:50   the battery the bad kind [TS]

00:34:52   it's not a good time for job walking bad [TS]

00:34:55   i have in my notes [TS]

00:34:56   monty python's brave new world it's a [TS]

00:34:58   little like that too it's a little Monty [TS]

00:34:59   Python ask ya somewhere in there maybe [TS]

00:35:02   world [TS]

00:35:02   the TV version of brave new world isn't [TS]

00:35:04   the wow that was truly truly awful [TS]

00:35:08   mhm oh god yes so the the old we meet [TS]

00:35:12   the old people who are who are the [TS]

00:35:13   monsters old people are monsters in this [TS]

00:35:17   world it's the walking old i think it's [TS]

00:35:20   interesting just to go back just a [TS]

00:35:22   little bit yeah see I told you it would [TS]

00:35:24   happen when the Eternals learned that [TS]

00:35:28   Arthur has been apparently selectively [TS]

00:35:30   breeding the chosen ones to do some sort [TS]

00:35:33   of you know personal eugenics project [TS]

00:35:35   for his own enjoyment they just kind of [TS]

00:35:38   you know [TS]

00:35:38   oh ok well he's he's been up to that [TS]

00:35:40   places where these enlightened people [TS]

00:35:42   and I guess it's our that's sort of [TS]

00:35:44   entertaining [TS]

00:35:45   I think they just don't care about what [TS]

00:35:46   happens in the in the Outlands like they [TS]

00:35:48   said he's the only one who he's gotta [TS]

00:35:49   you know he's only one who would take it [TS]

00:35:51   on and you get the sense maybe he said [TS]

00:35:52   alright well I get to do whatever I get [TS]

00:35:54   to do out there right now like yeah [TS]

00:35:55   whatever he's an artist and yet when [TS]

00:35:57   said arrives from the Outlands they're [TS]

00:35:59   intensely interested in what's been [TS]

00:36:01   going on out there so that doesn't make [TS]

00:36:03   a hell of a lot of sense it's because [TS]

00:36:04   he's come to them but i'm thinking it's [TS]

00:36:05   like you know some people that culture [TS]

00:36:07   making macrame men's vests other than [TS]

00:36:10   other people are all he's got are just [TS]

00:36:12   gonna be huge ethics [TS]

00:36:14   thank you every kid needs a hobby [TS]

00:36:16   it'sit's not macrame him but you know [TS]

00:36:19   it'll get my name is like let's put him [TS]

00:36:20   in charge of the Outlands to keep him [TS]

00:36:22   busy so we won't have to deal with him [TS]

00:36:23   so it's stupid magic tricks and his [TS]

00:36:25   bubbles and his paces painted on beard [TS]

00:36:28   on the way i should say when they go to [TS]

00:36:30   see the old people who are monsters he [TS]

00:36:33   drags he drags friend around in a cart [TS]

00:36:35   like he just pulls it looks like he's [TS]

00:36:38   the horse [TS]

00:36:39   I'm not dead yet I appreciated that he [TS]

00:36:41   didn't object to any of this that that I [TS]

00:36:45   was expecting sort of like rebellion [TS]

00:36:49   your belly and yeah and he isn't he just [TS]

00:36:53   sort of picks up the cart and goes and [TS]

00:36:55   he then follows friend around and [TS]

00:36:56   service potatoes and and that that was [TS]

00:36:59   sort of interesting and it wasn't until [TS]

00:37:02   I mean later in the film you see what [TS]

00:37:04   his motivations are and that you know [TS]

00:37:06   he's actually got a plan and whatever [TS]

00:37:08   but at that point I was like well he's [TS]

00:37:10   this is he's used to being in [TS]

00:37:14   for all to something he's used to being [TS]

00:37:15   thrown to a god so this must just be him [TS]

00:37:18   like you know just sort of continuing in [TS]

00:37:21   that mold which was interesting was an [TS]

00:37:23   interesting choice i felt it did it seem [TS]

00:37:26   to know I don't know be a lot less [TS]

00:37:29   tiring than then if it had been constant [TS]

00:37:32   know you you know you animal you drag me [TS]

00:37:35   around no I don't want to know you do it [TS]

00:37:36   you know back and just felt better than [TS]

00:37:39   that i agree but they did also [TS]

00:37:43   threatened to kill him [TS]

00:37:44   that's what time so yeah so he probably [TS]

00:37:47   didn't want to provoke them but yeah you [TS]

00:37:50   like that one guy except strange I'd [TS]

00:37:54   like to put in a word for friend to I [TS]

00:37:56   thought the the actor but the acting and [TS]

00:37:58   the part was one of the more interesting [TS]

00:38:00   things like one more interesting [TS]

00:38:01   characters in the movie because he was [TS]

00:38:03   part of a smartass any didn't think the [TS]

00:38:05   society that seriously he was also doing [TS]

00:38:07   all the exposition and and I think he [TS]

00:38:10   was actually the most consistently [TS]

00:38:12   interesting you know non-serious [TS]

00:38:14   character in the whole thing is a Greek [TS]

00:38:15   aziza subversive he's not actually a [TS]

00:38:18   part of the society that's unfolding [TS]

00:38:21   around us season he's mocking it but [TS]

00:38:24   doesn't doesn't go far enough mocking it [TS]

00:38:27   i don't think you know he does it when [TS]

00:38:29   he gets old later he's like hold on half [TS]

00:38:31   his face is that weird like everybody [TS]

00:38:33   else gets old and he he gets like the [TS]

00:38:35   half McCartney treatment that makeup [TS]

00:38:39   actually looked pretty decent though I [TS]

00:38:41   think that was one of the better effects [TS]

00:38:42   there and maybe they're like we know [TS]

00:38:44   it's not gonna work for a full face so [TS]

00:38:46   we'll just do a half and it'll seem [TS]

00:38:49   suitably convincing just didn't explain [TS]

00:38:51   it at a picnic we were going to make you [TS]

00:38:54   five years older instead we made half of [TS]

00:38:56   you ten years [TS]

00:38:59   this is where we get so he meets the [TS]

00:39:02   heats the apathetic so the the zombie [TS]

00:39:05   girls who are who are just kind of like [TS]

00:39:08   staring into space and the and friends [TS]

00:39:11   like yeah sure take one end of fondling [TS]

00:39:14   and he goes well he could yeah because [TS]

00:39:16   he looks at how many sticks his hand [TS]

00:39:17   under under her dress which is not hard [TS]

00:39:19   because it's like he open an easy access [TS]

00:39:21   and then he like takes her inside like [TS]

00:39:23   throws are in a haystack and and she's [TS]

00:39:26   completely dead too [TS]

00:39:27   world and so he is like that that's not [TS]

00:39:29   cool you know I guess he is primary [TS]

00:39:33   secondary and I guess it's he like he [TS]

00:39:35   likes it as a rapist he you know he [TS]

00:39:37   expects resistance [TS]

00:39:38   I suppose it is part of the physical [TS]

00:39:41   violence that's awful but it's also is [TS]

00:39:43   that thing it's like he's just almost [TS]

00:39:45   disgusted by them because they don't [TS]

00:39:47   have a result cases and he said is an [TS]

00:39:48   interesting character because but what [TS]

00:39:50   we get is he's a monster and he's a [TS]

00:39:52   creation of this of this uh totally [TS]

00:39:55   destroyed society that I cannot believe [TS]

00:39:56   I am taking it seriously was created but [TS]

00:39:59   I started looking at the track but um [TS]

00:40:01   but I it is but it's also kind of a [TS]

00:40:05   trick right it turns out that as we're [TS]

00:40:07   going to get to in the plot here but it [TS]

00:40:09   turns out he's actually been genetically [TS]

00:40:11   engineered to be incredibly like smart [TS]

00:40:13   and a quick learner and his read all the [TS]

00:40:15   books and and later he will learn even [TS]

00:40:18   more things throughout osmosis thinking [TS]

00:40:21   for projection but I it so there's more [TS]

00:40:25   there [TS]

00:40:26   he's an interesting character in that [TS]

00:40:27   way where there's like he's awful based [TS]

00:40:29   on the events we see but there's also [TS]

00:40:31   this other side of him that we don't [TS]

00:40:32   really realize yet at this point I'm not [TS]

00:40:35   sure they are completely connectable at [TS]

00:40:37   all but there it is [TS]

00:40:39   this is where they this is where they [TS]

00:40:41   don't they they explained that they [TS]

00:40:42   don't understand directions in the [TS]

00:40:44   future show important and then they say [TS]

00:40:45   come swales done the trick yourself haha [TS]

00:40:48   in one of their fine levels of hedonism [TS]

00:40:51   bot kind of us [TS]

00:40:52   yeah we attend a short seminar that is [TS]

00:40:55   titled the mysteries of the boner what [TS]

00:40:58   we got we also in in the part where [TS]

00:41:01   friend and hands that are traveling [TS]

00:41:05   around on the cart we get the trial of [TS]

00:41:06   George Satan which is sort of [TS]

00:41:08   interesting where we see what happens to [TS]

00:41:10   those who put out a negative aura during [TS]

00:41:12   2nd level meditation which will replace [TS]

00:41:15   sleep and in this kommune right yeah [TS]

00:41:19   they they have votes it's like all done [TS]

00:41:21   over the internet through there a little [TS]

00:41:23   little hollow rings and they just do [TS]

00:41:25   their little love they do their votes at [TS]

00:41:27   one point I have in my notes blah blah [TS]

00:41:28   blah votes boring but the Federation his [TS]

00:41:32   trial is a little more a little more [TS]

00:41:33   interesting the for a dissident to see [TS]

00:41:35   what happens to the dissident and we [TS]

00:41:37   learned that friend it likes somebody [TS]

00:41:39   who stirring the pot [TS]

00:41:40   I've been making trouble because at [TS]

00:41:42   least it's interesting now because [TS]

00:41:43   they're bored there i mean this is a [TS]

00:41:45   decayed society because they've been you [TS]

00:41:47   know not aging for hundreds of years and [TS]

00:41:50   people are getting a pathetic and [TS]

00:41:52   dropping out or yeah there's just it's a [TS]

00:41:54   ditz just this decadent decaying society [TS]

00:41:56   this perfect solution for the [TS]

00:41:58   advancement of humanity [TS]

00:41:59   yes surprise surprise they're actually [TS]

00:42:01   static admit and somebody from the [TS]

00:42:03   outside needs to come in and shake them [TS]

00:42:04   up this is this is the we've seen this [TS]

00:42:06   story before kinda pending right Erica [TS]

00:42:08   and selenium it didn't take long a lot [TS]

00:42:12   of the mortals take millions of years to [TS]

00:42:14   get this moment you have a hundred years [TS]

00:42:15   like 200 years right [TS]

00:42:17   well their new immortals remember that [TS]

00:42:19   this is the first generation of the [TS]

00:42:21   immortals and probably got a storyboard [TS]

00:42:22   that he's not going to be a second one [TS]

00:42:24   the my one there there there can't be [TS]

00:42:27   because the other so they're just so [TS]

00:42:29   bored another movie this reminds me of a [TS]

00:42:30   sleeper this is like the serious no [TS]

00:42:33   jokes version of sleeper with my way and [TS]

00:42:35   he saw sleeper and said what you want to [TS]

00:42:38   improve that film remove the humor [TS]

00:42:40   uh-huh just get rid of humor yeah more [TS]

00:42:43   boobs and unless humor can you please [TS]

00:42:46   let john boarman he wrote down on a [TS]

00:42:49   cocktail napkin at one point and begin [TS]

00:42:53   LSD block he had it framed later let's [TS]

00:42:56   see what in this section eight so they [TS]

00:42:58   explain the thing about sleeping and how [TS]

00:42:59   the meditation is replaced sleeping [TS]

00:43:01   there there is at this point in the film [TS]

00:43:03   suddenly some narration that kind of [TS]

00:43:05   comes out of nowhere like they didn't [TS]

00:43:08   know what was happening so they just [TS]

00:43:09   dropped in some narration apparently [TS]

00:43:12   just tested poorly know oddly enough [TS]

00:43:15   it's actually explaining part of the [TS]

00:43:18   plot of blade runner right there [TS]

00:43:20   yeah time for a break in the action for [TS]

00:43:22   me to tell you about one of our sponsors [TS]

00:43:23   it's Squarespace you know I've been [TS]

00:43:25   building websites on and off since the [TS]

00:43:27   very beginning of the web first website [TS]

00:43:29   i built was built in the email program [TS]

00:43:32   Eudora's text editor terrible place to [TS]

00:43:34   build a website and then uploaded to a [TS]

00:43:36   server that serve God pages by ftp we [TS]

00:43:39   didn't even have a proper web server to [TS]

00:43:41   do it we've come a long way the [TS]

00:43:42   uncomfortable website for good or ill [TS]

00:43:44   was built by me by hand using various [TS]

00:43:47   tools the tools have gotten a lot better [TS]

00:43:49   but here's the thing i had in order to [TS]

00:43:51   build that site i had to use CSS [TS]

00:43:53   and an HTML and JavaScript and I had it [TS]

00:43:56   was an incredibly complicated process [TS]

00:43:58   involving design and lots of custom [TS]

00:44:01   stuff here's the beauty of how far we've [TS]

00:44:03   come [TS]

00:44:04   is Squarespace means you don't need to [TS]

00:44:28   me I had to do some of that by hand on [TS]

00:44:31   the uncomfortable site and it's hard and [TS]

00:44:33   it took me a lot to learn how to do that [TS]

00:44:35   you don't have to learn this stuff with [TS]

00:44:37   squarespace your site will look [TS]

00:45:42   don't have to become an expert in [TS]

00:45:43   website design and site-building and [TS]

00:45:45   technical stuff to build a beautiful [TS]

00:45:47   modern web site so thank you to [TS]

00:45:49   squarespace for sponsoring me [TS]

00:45:50   uncomfortable [TS]

00:45:51   Squarespace build it beautiful part of [TS]

00:45:53   the problem with this movie is that he [TS]

00:45:55   has so many weird ideas that he wants to [TS]

00:45:57   stuff in here only way too many for a [TS]

00:46:00   film of this length and that is why [TS]

00:46:02   roughly two-thirds of the film is taken [TS]

00:46:04   up with telepathy exposition [TS]

00:46:07   Gator you know where we look into [TS]

00:46:08   somebody's mind and see something that [TS]

00:46:10   happened earlier or you know for some [TS]

00:46:12   reason somebody needs to know exactly [TS]

00:46:14   how it was that the the vortexes came [TS]

00:46:17   about and I mean a huge chunk of the [TS]

00:46:20   movies taken up with it and I think it [TS]

00:46:21   kind of if there was there was flow to [TS]

00:46:24   be broken up [TS]

00:46:24   yeah that definitely does it yeah this [TS]

00:46:27   movie doesn't need any of that talk [TS]

00:46:29   about like the vortexes and all that [TS]

00:46:31   kind of feel like it [TS]

00:46:33   yeah I again I can't believe I'm saying [TS]

00:46:35   this but I feel like if somebody had [TS]

00:46:36   rewritten the script to have it be a [TS]

00:46:38   little more down-to-earth a little more [TS]

00:46:41   just sort of like recognizable of the [TS]

00:46:43   characters and not as much weird [TS]

00:46:45   terminology i kind of felt like there [TS]

00:46:47   might have been an interesting movie [TS]

00:46:48   here but it is such a god-awful mess in [TS]

00:46:52   it and sometimes fascinatingly a mess [TS]

00:46:55   but it is just a it's just a mess and [TS]

00:46:57   yeah and I think it goes back to writer [TS]

00:47:00   director producer right you do whatever [TS]

00:47:02   just nobody said no there's a million [TS]

00:47:05   dollars now that the way it looks on [TS]

00:47:07   this particular set i get the impression [TS]

00:47:08   that everyone was kind of in you know [TS]

00:47:10   this this seems cool man [TS]

00:47:12   he seemed like a loan multi-month party [TS]

00:47:16   was it really a million dollars because [TS]

00:47:18   it looks like maybe 20,000 1.57 million [TS]

00:47:23   dollars [TS]

00:47:24   no he's not really always you don't you [TS]

00:47:26   don't have to flatter any other costs I [TS]

00:47:28   gotta say that they didn't they made [TS]

00:47:30   that go a long way when you consider [TS]

00:47:31   that ice pirates was like 11 million [TS]

00:47:33   well and you gotta think Connery cost a [TS]

00:47:37   little bit yeah yeah I should have the [TS]

00:47:39   nissan saying this film was good though [TS]

00:47:40   is actually it was so sort of both [TS]

00:47:43   natural and we're decides to drive [TS]

00:47:45   footing and it kind of made a lot of [TS]

00:47:47   sense and and he [TS]

00:47:49   Oh totally and and but it didn't look [TS]

00:47:53   like a high budget film to me for [TS]

00:47:54   exactly that reason and he act i wonder [TS]

00:47:58   if-if some of the stuff with like that [TS]

00:48:00   they're you know half of it is watching [TS]

00:48:02   people make their own bread and and and [TS]

00:48:05   so bed sheets to have encounters under [TS]

00:48:08   and that sort of thing it was just just [TS]

00:48:10   the day he went for like the low-tech [TS]

00:48:13   British village with weird plastic [TS]

00:48:16   inflated bags everywhere because it was [TS]

00:48:19   an intern [TS]

00:48:20   sting juxtaposition that also didn't [TS]

00:48:23   spend you know it tried to make it look [TS]

00:48:26   futuristic would have just blown the [TS]

00:48:28   budget entirely so you know he ended up [TS]

00:48:32   I don't know it just felt to me like the [TS]

00:48:33   sort of like constraint that produces [TS]

00:48:35   something interesting [TS]

00:48:36   it looks me a lot like a [TS]

00:48:37   middle-of-the-road seventies porn like [TS]

00:48:39   just think the film is actually the [TS]

00:48:41   resetting it was it very much and it's [TS]

00:48:44   not very little wall panel though in [TS]

00:48:46   this track was missing after the [TS]

00:48:48   prisoners browser TV series i was shot [TS]

00:48:50   in like a spanish village i think that [TS]

00:48:52   was a very interesting look that made it [TS]

00:48:54   look I'm slightly unreal given that was [TS]

00:48:56   completely real to so stark and the [TS]

00:48:58   Prisoner show got you completely [TS]

00:49:01   off-balance because the environment both [TS]

00:49:03   sort of normal and peculiar to RI some [TS]

00:49:06   it was filmed in Wales actually with [TS]

00:49:08   whales out there was a Spanish just know [TS]

00:49:10   portmeirion wails oh yeah it's a weird [TS]

00:49:13   resource very cool [TS]

00:49:14   this is the point where is Zed discovers [TS]

00:49:17   through by offloading book that is [TS]

00:49:19   actually held by Zardoz but he's [TS]

00:49:21   invisible or something that he learns [TS]

00:49:24   about books and learns to read and [TS]

00:49:26   discovers the secret which is that is [TS]

00:49:29   our dogs just a story taken from the [TS]

00:49:32   with zardari bars close the wizard of oz [TS]

00:49:36   eau plot twist mind that came up because [TS]

00:49:40   i didn't see it coming [TS]

00:49:41   this seemed puzzled me because he's a [TS]

00:49:43   maze interrogating him to get this [TS]

00:49:45   information and he doesn't want to tell [TS]

00:49:46   her in it it's confusing because why [TS]

00:49:49   doesn't he want to tell I mean it's not [TS]

00:49:51   it is why does this part matter and it [TS]

00:49:55   just sort of drags for a really long [TS]

00:49:57   time for this interrogation [TS]

00:49:59   well he's owning up to the fact that [TS]

00:50:00   he's there to destroy their society at [TS]

00:50:02   this point so i would say it kind of [TS]

00:50:03   does matter is I think he also feels a [TS]

00:50:06   little like like ashamed and embarrassed [TS]

00:50:08   at having been taken in by the by the [TS]

00:50:11   giant floating Godhead that was actually [TS]

00:50:12   just like the man behind the curtain [TS]

00:50:14   that was that was my sort of read on it [TS]

00:50:16   but yeah he's embarrassed i never [TS]

00:50:19   learned to read and goals are starting i [TS]

00:50:22   lost my initials [TS]

00:50:24   the library you know there is there is a [TS]

00:50:27   certain amount of parallel to wizard of [TS]

00:50:29   oz with you know being transported to [TS]

00:50:32   another place there's the cyclone that [TS]

00:50:34   takes Arthur Frayn away in the beginning [TS]

00:50:36   there's you know the the manor house is [TS]

00:50:39   kinda like the Emerald City and and then [TS]

00:50:42   he discovers the you know pay no [TS]

00:50:44   attention to the man behind the curtain [TS]

00:50:45   maker emerald bread the bread is going [TS]

00:50:48   to bed [TS]

00:50:49   yeah nice together it all ties together [TS]

00:50:52   old bread what it all makes sense [TS]

00:50:55   why'd ya we're going to stop talking [TS]

00:50:57   pretty soon we're going to like this [TS]

00:50:59   movie and I can't alone 0 unit could not [TS]

00:51:01   allow that to happen [TS]

00:51:02   that's the magic of the film Jason [TS]

00:51:04   there's something there you gotta admit [TS]

00:51:06   he gets kid gets caught [TS]

00:51:07   uh and and yet showing his perhaps [TS]

00:51:10   mutant power he sort of escapes Consuela [TS]

00:51:14   power a little bit but is blinded but [TS]

00:51:16   then they put like eyedrops in them or [TS]

00:51:17   something in his we missed me missed my [TS]

00:51:19   friend gets only we talk about that my [TS]

00:51:21   friend gets senile old yeah we did we [TS]

00:51:23   skip that over i think yes he didn't [TS]

00:51:25   want to go to level two [TS]

00:51:26   man it was the most ridiculous thing [TS]

00:51:28   that always get out because that's the [TS]

00:51:30   whole thing where they give him like the [TS]

00:51:31   brute weird fires jazzy's it's like they [TS]

00:51:35   took a transport the cast of Godspell [TS]

00:51:37   from several traveling companies in one [TS]

00:51:39   room and the parachute system is no I [TS]

00:51:43   don't want to go to show you looked up [TS]

00:51:48   roger ebert's review and and the last [TS]

00:51:50   line of the review it's brilliant uses [TS]

00:51:52   zeros is a movie that will certainly aid [TS]

00:51:55   you two hours that scene with them with [TS]

00:51:59   the jazz hands and stuff actually it [TS]

00:52:01   kind of at the very beginning we have [TS]

00:52:03   the floating head and the crazy [TS]

00:52:04   monologue i just turned to Stephen and I [TS]

00:52:06   said is this communicator and when this [TS]

00:52:10   team came along with jazz hands I turned [TS]

00:52:12   back to Stephen and said this is [TS]

00:52:13   community are you're the Christ you're [TS]

00:52:16   the great Jesus Christ be uh you have a [TS]

00:52:20   second level although that's his [TS]

00:52:21   rebellion right that he's saying i'm [TS]

00:52:23   tired of you people [TS]

00:52:24   what you gonna do to me and the answer [TS]

00:52:26   is we're going to age you on half of [TS]

00:52:27   your face [TS]

00:52:29   well I think they actually kill him here [TS]

00:52:31   which is pitches which eventually here's [TS]

00:52:33   to die at that point I assume that he [TS]

00:52:35   was a lot [TS]

00:52:36   reconstructed in the tabernacle as half [TS]

00:52:38   old yeah I guess that's I guess that's [TS]

00:52:40   it or do they repair him or whatever I'm [TS]

00:52:43   i was unclear on whether they always [TS]

00:52:45   just died or whether they fix them and [TS]

00:52:46   all that be right [TS]

00:52:47   maybe so maybe they reconstitute him and [TS]

00:52:49   he's just sort of halfway broken I just [TS]

00:52:51   study past I think I think you're you're [TS]

00:52:53   giving it continuity that it doesn't [TS]

00:52:55   deserve you be making an argument that's [TS]

00:52:58   what he's mentioned earlier that he's [TS]

00:53:00   killed himself on sun several occasions [TS]

00:53:02   right ankle just reconstruct them so [TS]

00:53:04   here we make some sense be mind-blown [TS]

00:53:06   and then taken away to be aged this is [TS]

00:53:08   this is around at the point in the movie [TS]

00:53:10   by the way where somebody says speaking [TS]

00:53:12   of tropes that we are going to see a lot [TS]

00:53:14   and have seen a lot literally stay say [TS]

00:53:17   to sean connery you are the one no [TS]

00:53:20   liberated yep yep Stephen turn to me I'm [TS]

00:53:25   like yep it's the major favor and then [TS]

00:53:28   she gives him will be that's right at [TS]

00:53:31   least 11 so why not leave will help you [TS]

00:53:33   at an unknown time in the future sleep [TS]

00:53:35   will help you [TS]

00:53:35   why did he go blind she messed up his [TS]

00:53:38   head man [TS]

00:53:39   yeah it was but it was observed line [TS]

00:53:40   blitz he was able to resist her to a [TS]

00:53:43   certain extent but he was blinded in the [TS]

00:53:45   process [TS]

00:53:45   IC and then for some reason instead of [TS]

00:53:47   immediately killed killing him they [TS]

00:53:49   allow the lady to take him off to the [TS]

00:53:50   hydroponic bubble [TS]

00:53:51   yes can I promise and give him a magical [TS]

00:53:54   leaf it makes perfect sense glad you [TS]

00:53:57   believe you should be recapping this [TS]

00:53:59   that that that was that was perfect that [TS]

00:54:01   was washed twice and it actually made [TS]

00:54:02   some sense on the second viewing only [TS]

00:54:04   know probably I think browsers a bad [TS]

00:54:06   side you want to take us the rest of the [TS]

00:54:08   way because you know day you just dump [TS]

00:54:11   it all right i prefer to interrupt you [TS]

00:54:12   Jason ok the world was dying which was [TS]

00:54:17   good and put it into plastic tent which [TS]

00:54:22   is which is fascinating to so we EV is [TS]

00:54:24   this freak a plastic tent and a nail [TS]

00:54:27   pylon and hands-on in the plastic and [TS]

00:54:29   there's a moment where people are like [TS]

00:54:30   okay it's okay he's in the plants now he [TS]

00:54:31   can't get out of the plastic and [TS]

00:54:32   reconstructive plastic they're like it [TS]

00:54:34   can't be done [TS]

00:54:36   you could you can trip the plastic bag [TS]

00:54:38   if you use saran wrap oh my god that I [TS]

00:54:42   just how involved he is he could never [TS]

00:54:43   have like 50 he's got mutiny plastic [TS]

00:54:46   ripping plat power is this guy [TS]

00:54:49   I I there's a there's a weird scene [TS]

00:54:51   where he is now he's on the run and he [TS]

00:54:53   goes up to the shield and he's pushing [TS]

00:54:55   against the shield and he he does like [TS]

00:54:56   the hand signal to his guys on the [TS]

00:54:58   outside you like how he's gotta plan [TS]

00:55:00   this is all part of the plan they set [TS]

00:55:02   the building on fire to smoke them out [TS]

00:55:03   that doesn't really work [TS]

00:55:05   there's there's a bunch of chases I like [TS]

00:55:07   the scene where the horses are running [TS]

00:55:08   along the side of the hill and so he [TS]

00:55:09   just likes kids on his butt down there [TS]

00:55:11   down the angle of the hill to get in [TS]

00:55:13   front of them i thought that was funny [TS]

00:55:14   and I wanted how many takes they had to [TS]

00:55:15   do where his diaper kept coming off man [TS]

00:55:18   yeah i'm not going to change enough for [TS]

00:55:21   dish so he's on the run the apathetic [TS]

00:55:23   scum to him [TS]

00:55:24   it turns out his I don't know sweat make [TS]

00:55:27   them come awake and then they all start [TS]

00:55:29   kissing each other because life flows [TS]

00:55:31   out of you and into us as they say [TS]

00:55:34   what's interesting here is the feet that [TS]

00:55:35   the dropouts have tuned in and turned on [TS]

00:55:38   at that point what a turn about that [TS]

00:55:41   wasn't Stephen tweeted that [TS]

00:55:43   Zardoz is the soft core porn parody of [TS]

00:55:46   itself [TS]

00:55:47   yeah you can work it took a monkey yeah [TS]

00:55:51   I I thought it was that was a bizarre [TS]

00:55:53   scene where they're all just like I [TS]

00:55:55   touched your sweat and now i'm awake and [TS]

00:55:56   now i will touch my hand with your sweat [TS]

00:55:58   onto them and we will all yeah that was [TS]

00:56:01   I was wondering where that scene was [TS]

00:56:02   going said it's like that psychotropic [TS]

00:56:04   frog is another great moment when [TS]

00:56:07   they're looking on though where they're [TS]

00:56:08   passing around his sweat and we get a [TS]

00:56:10   close-up on Seth's face and the look on [TS]

00:56:12   his face a crisis like what the hell is [TS]

00:56:14   that was actually Connery on the set [TS]

00:56:18   that wasn't forget it forget it said [TS]

00:56:20   it's a pathetic you'd appreciate that [TS]

00:56:23   they showed that they showed you know [TS]

00:56:24   women kissing women men kissing I [TS]

00:56:26   noticed that surround that swell so it [TS]

00:56:28   was a gala Therrien so this is the [TS]

00:56:30   climax of the movie i guess the old [TS]

00:56:32   people and the apathetic sarkar are out [TS]

00:56:35   and about [TS]

00:56:36   they're all killing people and having [TS]

00:56:38   sex Sean Connery is dressed up like a [TS]

00:56:41   like a like a bride with a veil because [TS]

00:56:45   that's what was that a very clever [TS]

00:56:46   little disguise of his no one will [TS]

00:56:49   figure out why they're there is this so [TS]

00:56:52   I'm just again just stop me whenever I [TS]

00:56:54   the line i wrote down here was [TS]

00:56:56   we will touch teach you and you will [TS]

00:56:58   give us your seed ok so he basically [TS]

00:57:00   what's happening is they have sex with [TS]

00:57:02   him while they teaching math and that [TS]

00:57:04   goes on for a long time because there's [TS]

00:57:06   a lot of math there's a lot of poetry [TS]

00:57:07   and there's some explanation for why [TS]

00:57:09   this has happened because it's through [TS]

00:57:10   osmosis Steve they're learning through [TS]

00:57:12   osmosis but we have to explain why this [TS]

00:57:14   is all going on which is that is is that [TS]

00:57:16   made the scientists still believes that [TS]

00:57:18   they could not destroy the vortex and [TS]

00:57:21   that with his his enlightened jeans they [TS]

00:57:24   could build a better breathe better [TS]

00:57:25   society and right and so the idea is to [TS]

00:57:28   continue on to whatever is next for [TS]

00:57:30   humanity by going to give they're going [TS]

00:57:32   to give him all their knowledge and [TS]

00:57:34   getting knowledge is going to impress [TS]

00:57:36   you in the mood yeah yeah they're [TS]

00:57:37   basically there's a spin there that i [TS]

00:57:39   thought was telling to take it seriously [TS]

00:57:41   for one second is that they're like it [TS]

00:57:43   turned out we were too imperfect vessels [TS]

00:57:45   like we weren't strong enough because [TS]

00:57:47   we're all endogenous or women or [TS]

00:57:48   whatever it was like this little i think [TS]

00:57:50   a sexist or some kind of throw away [TS]

00:57:52   which is like we were so weak but you [TS]

00:57:54   were a virile man you can take all this [TS]

00:57:56   knowledge that you have and we don't [TS]

00:57:57   have you got all the chest hair [TS]

00:57:58   yeah also point out that i like the [TS]

00:58:01   projection apparently you learn by [TS]

00:58:02   having things projected a naked bodies i [TS]

00:58:04   know that work for me in school I really [TS]

00:58:06   like that sequence by the way with the [TS]

00:58:08   great works of art and the equations [TS]

00:58:09   being projected on the people i actually [TS]

00:58:11   thought that was pretty solid insane but [TS]

00:58:14   side if the best 2001 scene in this [TS]

00:58:16   movie of the many 2001 scenes in this [TS]

00:58:19   movie I I thought it was it I thought it [TS]

00:58:20   was weird and interesting yeah it goes [TS]

00:58:22   on about twice as long as it meets [TS]

00:58:24   always absolutely true is so the touch [TS]

00:58:27   teach him he gives them their seat it [TS]

00:58:29   seems like a fair trade and then and [TS]

00:58:31   then my notes reduce are reduced to [TS]

00:58:33   things like phrases like kill the [TS]

00:58:35   tabernacle and they burst into the [TS]

00:58:38   building and Consuela comes in and she's [TS]

00:58:40   gonna stab him but she can't bear to or [TS]

00:58:42   uses his mind powers to stop her [TS]

00:58:44   no just like they did with him when he [TS]

00:58:47   had the gun earlier and and this leads [TS]

00:58:49   up to a nice moment where while talking [TS]

00:58:51   to tabernacle the computer that controls [TS]

00:58:53   everything which gave me a real for [TS]

00:58:56   Harlan Ellison people out there little I [TS]

00:58:59   have no mouth and I must scream kind of [TS]

00:59:00   vibe I got this point in the movie yeah [TS]

00:59:02   I can see that and a little bit of [TS]

00:59:04   hitchhikers guide [TS]

00:59:06   yeah yeah which it just seemed that the [TS]

00:59:08   darkness of its like [TS]

00:59:10   computer the center is sort of like I've [TS]

00:59:12   got my little people who live in my [TS]

00:59:13   plastic bubble and i'm going to control [TS]

00:59:15   them and do what they want and sean [TS]

00:59:16   connery look cinemas I think your [TS]

00:59:19   crystal got more of a Kirk vibe here [TS]

00:59:24   where he's going to destroy the computer [TS]

00:59:26   in charge of paradise to save everyone [TS]

00:59:28   Connery thinks that you're your society [TS]

00:59:30   is stupid and needs to be destroyed [TS]

00:59:32   clearly the flash hear that about how [TS]

00:59:35   the tabernacle is created and that sort [TS]

00:59:36   of like brief scene that seems like it's [TS]

00:59:38   a totally different movie makes the guy [TS]

00:59:40   creates the society explains what's [TS]

00:59:42   going on where they dissolve the from [TS]

00:59:43   the old people to when they were not old [TS]

00:59:45   people and the and the the new [TS]

00:59:47   generation is young and it's laters yeah [TS]

00:59:50   I wanted to see that movie I was a [TS]

00:59:52   totally different like set and see me if [TS]

00:59:55   you don't of course and this is a MH [TS]

00:59:56   channel on with the movie with the the [TS]

00:59:59   village right [TS]

00:59:59   village right [TS]

01:00:00   is not part of the plot delicious [TS]

01:00:03   yeah that the toys that was that it's [TS]

01:00:05   it's not like spoiler was really sorry [TS]

01:00:08   sorry sorry that movie story 12 years [TS]

01:00:11   old your what we learn in this point [TS]

01:00:13   that this vortex is actually a spaceship [TS]

01:00:18   yeah that was yeah another dead end and [TS]

01:00:21   he says oh yeah we flew around but you [TS]

01:00:23   know it was just another dead end [TS]

01:00:24   yeah what's the point of that it was so [TS]

01:00:27   it's another get in i guess i guess it [TS]

01:00:29   was quite literally did we get the part [TS]

01:00:31   here to I've lost complete track of the [TS]

01:00:33   plot where this Christmas embedded in [TS]

01:00:35   the foreheads and the laser of lost [TS]

01:00:37   track of what's going on this was the [TS]

01:00:39   point in the movie or I just sort of [TS]

01:00:41   gave up on holding two onto any threads [TS]

01:00:44   and trying to follow him [TS]

01:00:46   it just was just like okay there are [TS]

01:00:49   crystals he's holding the crystals [TS]

01:00:50   crystals and people's foreheads he's [TS]

01:00:52   inside a crystal now there's four of him [TS]

01:00:54   whatever it's just yeah that this is [TS]

01:00:56   where I just ended up writing down weird [TS]

01:00:58   hall of mirrors pianist this is this is [TS]

01:01:02   this is the part of the movie that makes [TS]

01:01:04   no sense [TS]

01:01:05   honestly on my second viewing I could [TS]

01:01:07   make I could make some sense of the [TS]

01:01:09   first hour and fifteen i could make [TS]

01:01:11   sense of the last maybe 10 minutes and [TS]

01:01:14   then this whole segment is just you know [TS]

01:01:16   why even try [TS]

01:01:18   yeah the any also have so many things [TS]

01:01:21   that don't really seem to go anywhere [TS]

01:01:23   he's just like adding more scenes in [TS]

01:01:24   here because there's the whole thing [TS]

01:01:25   with the spherical crystal thing these [TS]

01:01:29   handed by Arthur Frayn has been [TS]

01:01:31   reconstituted with his like riddling [TS]

01:01:33   explanation and you stabbed him with the [TS]

01:01:35   fake life I hated that [TS]

01:01:36   yeah and then I kind of liked that it [TS]

01:01:40   was him he's a trickster man it felt [TS]

01:01:43   very um this is weird parallel to make [TS]

01:01:49   but Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are [TS]

01:01:51   dead that at that point he was the the [TS]

01:01:53   oh I forget the name of the character [TS]

01:01:55   the one who was in Rosencrantz and [TS]

01:01:56   Guildenstern about the player that he [TS]

01:01:58   was when he was the one who was who was [TS]

01:02:01   just sort of exploded like to be the [TS]

01:02:03   arch explainer and to sort of undercut [TS]

01:02:06   everything while telling you the truth [TS]

01:02:08   the same time I have to Richard Dreyfuss [TS]

01:02:10   from the movie if you can [TS]

01:02:12   transit helping you can have blood and [TS]

01:02:15   comedy and but blood is compulsory right [TS]

01:02:18   after the holiday mirrors we got a great [TS]

01:02:19   another classic sorry i was line which [TS]

01:02:21   is stay close to me inside my aura which [TS]

01:02:27   is apparently like six people long as [TS]

01:02:30   it's not expressed up when he's got a [TS]

01:02:31   huge aura it's just some people have [TS]

01:02:34   longer or as a manly man he's got a [TS]

01:02:36   large or as you probably in the Eternals [TS]

01:02:39   is they couldn't get up a good aura read [TS]

01:02:41   know he's here i'll he he exudes an aura [TS]

01:02:44   you can smell eyes are on you can smell [TS]

01:02:47   it then huh [TS]

01:02:48   this is his newfound aura is capable of [TS]

01:02:50   rewinding the movie if you ideally back [TS]

01:02:52   legs longer the issues i don't know [TS]

01:02:56   they're just not in here anymore and [TS]

01:02:57   they're outside they're like hehe we [TS]

01:02:59   just stay close to me we're going to go [TS]

01:03:00   backward in time and they escaped the [TS]

01:03:01   hell I mean it's no dumber than the rest [TS]

01:03:03   of the left and then suddenly the stone [TS]

01:03:06   head appears and just crashes because [TS]

01:03:08   like they're like hey remember the stone [TS]

01:03:09   head there it is then dried the vortex [TS]

01:03:11   yeah well if you don't have cancer [TS]

01:03:13   particles milkman obviously goes down [TS]

01:03:15   boom really you think it should have [TS]

01:03:17   like exploded just really violently we [TS]

01:03:19   don't have any involvement stuff that [TS]

01:03:20   was inside [TS]

01:03:21   well the camera to zoom in and out very [TS]

01:03:23   quickly to indicate the 01 didn't invent [TS]

01:03:27   it shakes everything is getting in the [TS]

01:03:29   room there's a really lackluster Star [TS]

01:03:31   Trek bridge shake this weather like the [TS]

01:03:34   I suppose there's an explosion so we [TS]

01:03:36   should shake a little half-heartedly [TS]

01:03:39   it's just the lens other people stand in [TS]

01:03:41   place [TS]

01:03:42   yeah another great lines a deliberate me [TS]

01:03:45   now but then he can't he can't shoot i [TS]

01:03:50   can't do it because he's more advanced [TS]

01:03:53   now or something [TS]

01:03:54   he's been had his he's much thought he [TS]

01:03:56   and karate load on a shirt and he can't [TS]

01:03:59   do anymore but his that I am is gone or [TS]

01:04:02   something yeah so his buddies in these [TS]

01:04:04   artists master though they're still just [TS]

01:04:06   killers so they come in and they kill [TS]

01:04:08   everybody major lame to me Danny then [TS]

01:04:12   the Immortals just want to die [TS]

01:04:13   this seems pretty much like the sam [TS]

01:04:15   peckinpah parody from money pie from [TS]

01:04:17   monty python yes they just left the [TS]

01:04:19   piano players hands being cut off [TS]

01:04:21   I [TS]

01:04:22   it's hilarious because they're all [TS]

01:04:23   crawling around going to kill me too i [TS]

01:04:25   want to die [TS]

01:04:26   no don't shoot him first should be my [TS]

01:04:28   mic notes here are the string ensemble [TS]

01:04:30   is a nice touch [TS]

01:04:31   I thought that was great it's the music [TS]

01:04:33   is playing and they're playing and as [TS]

01:04:35   they kill the music doesn't stop the [TS]

01:04:37   music keeps playing the soundtrack music [TS]

01:04:39   and I didn't like that I wanted it to be [TS]

01:04:41   like now there's only two of the plan [TS]

01:04:42   not one complaint I was no more music [TS]

01:04:45   but that didn't happen i think it's [TS]

01:04:47   interesting that as they're all dying [TS]

01:04:48   they they're all shouting said that much [TS]

01:04:51   as they want shouted zard on the outlet [TS]

01:04:53   was that is the last thing you say is [TS]

01:04:55   the last letter of the alphabet [TS]

01:04:57   well he's there God now he's got disease [TS]

01:04:59   for it for a while he's one of them [TS]

01:05:01   well he's he said earlier said for [TS]

01:05:03   Zardoz when he introduces themselves [TS]

01:05:05   through which made me wonder what the [TS]

01:05:07   rest of them are named is it like [TS]

01:05:09   everyone else's is like Todd and and [TS]

01:05:12   Jeff and he's like the only one who [TS]

01:05:14   could be maybe and meeting me in that [TS]

01:05:17   way men maybe minute like hello I'm Zed [TS]

01:05:19   force our dogs have you considered [TS]

01:05:21   brings our senior year sorry i was about [TS]

01:05:24   citizen science don't head is out and [TS]

01:05:26   it's our does ology that's right I've [TS]

01:05:29   got a pamphlet will be coming to your [TS]

01:05:30   door will even shoot you or give you the [TS]

01:05:32   pamphlet know it's called diaper ethics [TS]

01:05:38   I hurt your daughter so the gas out you [TS]

01:05:45   monsters you blew up the gas balloons [TS]

01:05:48   that were near the manor house know what [TS]

01:05:52   we missed the we missed the bit where [TS]

01:05:53   they're walking with Arthur Frayn and he [TS]

01:05:55   explains his diabolical plan to [TS]

01:05:58   yeah that's true to your the vortex mr. [TS]

01:06:00   which we've sort of calculated out by [TS]

01:06:02   now but this is the this is the moment [TS]

01:06:03   where he explains that this and and and [TS]

01:06:06   and that he has the plan to sean connery [TS]

01:06:08   Sean Connery set because he says he says [TS]

01:06:10   oh and you know i manipulated you to do [TS]

01:06:13   all these things and sean connery's yeah [TS]

01:06:14   i talked to the guy who manipulated you [TS]

01:06:16   into doing all those things so haha in [TS]

01:06:18   my notice that point was no really when [TS]

01:06:20   did that happen exactly because i don't [TS]

01:06:22   think i was here for them well that was [TS]

01:06:24   tabernacle is is how i read that is [TS]

01:06:26   where the tabernacle didn't direct or [TS]

01:06:29   did in rescuing into nor did it I i [TS]

01:06:32   think i think there's something that [TS]

01:06:33   they forgot to put in there maybe didn't [TS]

01:06:35   and I kind of always the guy the older [TS]

01:06:37   guy who founded the colony isn't that [TS]

01:06:39   what he talked to him and his house or [TS]

01:06:40   some kind of moment when the ends of the [TS]

01:06:42   crystal were supposed to understand so [TS]

01:06:44   the old guy explains that that that [TS]

01:06:47   nature is who rebelled against the [TS]

01:06:49   vortex bottles the vortex is an [TS]

01:06:52   abomination against nature any chances [TS]

01:06:54   we force the hand of evolution so I [TS]

01:06:56   guess really is the forces of nature and [TS]

01:06:58   evolution but as to when said had this [TS]

01:07:00   discussion with nature or evolution I [TS]

01:07:02   missed that part of tabernacle was hot [TS]

01:07:04   and it's not he doesn't say discussion [TS]

01:07:06   he says I looked into the mind of [TS]

01:07:08   whoever it was tabernacle [TS]

01:07:10   yeah amber taking notes at this point [TS]

01:07:12   Eric I'm impressed and I just remember [TS]

01:07:14   dialogue i don't know i didn't write [TS]

01:07:16   anything down for this one [TS]

01:07:17   maybe that was when everyone was voting [TS]

01:07:19   and all the mirrors and clean Suellen [TS]

01:07:21   it's just sort of like rocking back and [TS]

01:07:24   forth and gods world believe me I don't [TS]

01:07:27   want to remember the dialogue this gonna [TS]

01:07:29   scrub it out somehow they close to me [TS]

01:07:31   inside my aura everybody please out into [TS]

01:07:35   the Outland presumably some of them are [TS]

01:07:37   bearing the children of said and his his [TS]

01:07:41   uh his GF mutant genes will live on and [TS]

01:07:44   create a new society that will be [TS]

01:07:46   stronger but he can't go there instead [TS]

01:07:48   he and Consuela go into a cave [TS]

01:07:50   I guess it's the cave [TS]

01:07:52   the stone head I don't know yeah yeah [TS]

01:07:53   and still had yeah [TS]

01:07:55   oh that's it it really yeah they go [TS]

01:07:57   running off you can see part of the head [TS]

01:07:58   and they run into it yeah yeah yeah so [TS]

01:08:01   they're instant living in the stone head [TS]

01:08:03   that would be a sitcom right and they [TS]

01:08:05   then they put on some clothes this is [TS]

01:08:08   different like grown-up clothes and and [TS]

01:08:10   she has the baby and then we have [TS]

01:08:11   another great 2001 ask scene where they [TS]

01:08:14   sit there it's also very much like it's [TS]

01:08:17   the end of ice pirates was just as much [TS]

01:08:19   like an ad i saw earlier today [TS]

01:08:21   yeah it's into good cresselia should get [TS]

01:08:23   a life to have an episode ended and like [TS]

01:08:25   this where people are sitting on a bench [TS]

01:08:26   turning into skeletons and that's what [TS]

01:08:27   happens they they get older and their [TS]

01:08:29   son grows up and he and then they hugged [TS]

01:08:31   him goodbye and he leaves and then they [TS]

01:08:33   get even older and then they turn into [TS]

01:08:34   skeletons and then they're like amount [TS]

01:08:36   of bones and their dust and that last [TS]

01:08:39   part i didn't expect the dust I'm like [TS]

01:08:41   skeletons ok and then they totally [TS]

01:08:43   decomposed and I thought okay that's [TS]

01:08:45   that take and then we zoom in on some [TS]

01:08:46   paintings of hands and we've never seen [TS]

01:08:48   before never no context for yeah I [TS]

01:08:51   didn't get that at all [TS]

01:08:52   ya na a rusty gun they were holding did [TS]

01:08:55   they die holding hands and we have them [TS]

01:08:56   die hole and then the other one when [TS]

01:08:58   they were new they were about to die [TS]

01:08:59   they held their hand and then a diary or [TS]

01:09:01   did they die because they were a time [TS]

01:09:02   for taxes they just spent their whole [TS]

01:09:04   lives sitting there doing holding hands [TS]

01:09:06   okay yeah they've seen it all that and [TS]

01:09:09   so that makes as much sense as anything [TS]

01:09:10   else in this movie so it was great and [TS]

01:09:11   then it's the end of the movie i'm [TS]

01:09:12   looking at the Times stamp on the movie [TS]

01:09:14   and I'm like and it's like and then dust [TS]

01:09:16   and then compute all right artists will [TS]

01:09:20   return in diversity zardosi and no time [TS]

01:09:23   for end credits [TS]

01:09:25   that's our does what does hard-ons I [TS]

01:09:27   liked it so what did everybody to be [TS]

01:09:29   okay tell me don't tell me [TS]

01:09:31   oh why didn't I already tell you that [TS]

01:09:33   the last hours [TS]

01:09:35   oh I think it's insane and i think it's [TS]

01:09:38   got a lot of things individually that [TS]

01:09:40   are clever and could have made a good [TS]

01:09:41   movie i think it's for all its insanity [TS]

01:09:44   there's enough there that you sit around [TS]

01:09:46   for a little while and you think about [TS]

01:09:48   it and you try and work out how it works [TS]

01:09:50   you fail but you try each well I have [TS]

01:09:52   eventually I think you can pick up on [TS]

01:09:54   some little threads here the problem is [TS]

01:09:56   there's there's he's just trying to cram [TS]

01:09:57   too much in and if he had may be stuck [TS]

01:10:00   to one of those threads and explore it a [TS]

01:10:01   little bit it would have worked as a [TS]

01:10:03   movie better [TS]

01:10:04   as it was you know he's just he's he's [TS]

01:10:07   throwing everything possible [TS]

01:10:09   sci fi at the wall and not even started [TS]

01:10:11   hanging around to see what sticks and so [TS]

01:10:13   I mean it is a glorious mess and i think [TS]

01:10:17   a well-made mess given the budget and [TS]

01:10:20   given given that it is a mess and and [TS]

01:10:24   I'm not sure I'll ever watch it again [TS]

01:10:25   but I'm glad I did and and I enjoyed the [TS]

01:10:32   second viewing which I I was fairly sure [TS]

01:10:34   after watching the first one and being [TS]

01:10:36   completely non plus that when i went [TS]

01:10:39   back to it i would go yeah it turns out [TS]

01:10:41   this was shit but I i actually liked it [TS]

01:10:45   better act after the second viewing and [TS]

01:10:47   and who knows maybe i'll give it another [TS]

01:10:48   go at some point and like it even more [TS]

01:10:50   I can't believe I'd I didn't even [TS]

01:10:52   mention the woman with the princess leia [TS]

01:10:54   hair hair do [TS]

01:10:55   oh yeah like prep preceding star wars by [TS]

01:10:59   only a few years she had the exact same [TS]

01:11:01   hairdo [TS]

01:11:02   there's a lot of cookie hairdo stuff [TS]

01:11:03   going yeah and potatoes when you don't [TS]

01:11:05   have any money for any actual props room [TS]

01:11:08   set [TS]

01:11:08   what did what everybody else with the [TS]

01:11:10   what's the final final judgments here so [TS]

01:11:13   to speak David Laura what do you what do [TS]

01:11:15   you think [TS]

01:11:15   hey I want to say he sort of likes it [TS]

01:11:19   but he's afraid I I sort of like some of [TS]

01:11:22   the ideas and themes that are there and [TS]

01:11:24   just wish he had been sober you know I [TS]

01:11:29   mean the other the other line from roger [TS]

01:11:31   ebert the love to actually starts the [TS]

01:11:33   review with this and I just here Roger [TS]

01:11:36   Ebert's voice inflection and everything [TS]

01:11:38   just john boarman Zardoz is a genuinely [TS]

01:11:42   quirky movie could say that far [TS]

01:11:46   yeah okay yeah i'm i'm kinda with my son [TS]

01:11:51   with you know shooting the cameraman and [TS]

01:11:53   ending right there [TS]

01:11:54   Erica what do you think well you know I [TS]

01:11:59   it was interesting hearing him talk [TS]

01:12:01   about seeing this as as as a younger [TS]

01:12:03   person because I i think if i had seen [TS]

01:12:05   it when I was much much younger I could [TS]

01:12:08   I could maybe see myself buying into [TS]

01:12:10   this and getting into the weirdness and [TS]

01:12:11   just I mean like I said the idea it's [TS]

01:12:14   it's an old trope and it's been done a [TS]

01:12:16   million [TS]

01:12:16   times but if I had caught it before i [TS]

01:12:18   had read all of the golden age in in New [TS]

01:12:21   Wave syfy that I've read between then [TS]

01:12:23   and now maybe I would have liked it [TS]

01:12:25   because I wouldn't have seen it done [TS]

01:12:27   better in other ways but I just I can't [TS]

01:12:30   get past I can't get past the the [TS]

01:12:33   tiredness of that idea and and I guess I [TS]

01:12:37   don't always mind it sometimes I enjoy [TS]

01:12:40   it but when it's it's something like [TS]

01:12:42   this where it's just the big dude bro [TS]

01:12:45   manly man hunk figure who is who is [TS]

01:12:48   coming in to save the day and show [TS]

01:12:51   everyone the error of their ways it just [TS]

01:12:52   gets on my nerves and they didn't I feel [TS]

01:12:55   like they were trying to show that Sean [TS]

01:12:57   Connery's character evolved throughout [TS]

01:12:59   this and became Odin a different [TS]

01:13:01   character he can't shoot the gun at the [TS]

01:13:03   end but we don't get anything in between [TS]

01:13:05   showing that this is happening [TS]

01:13:07   maybe if he had showed any inner life at [TS]

01:13:09   all through that movie is just include [TS]

01:13:12   is completely flat there is no effect in [TS]

01:13:14   his performance whatsoever so I didn't [TS]

01:13:16   buy that so it just it ended up but [TS]

01:13:19   despite you know some interesting sets [TS]

01:13:21   and and and i didn't have to watch it a [TS]

01:13:23   second time to feel that the plot kind [TS]

01:13:25   of hung together [TS]

01:13:26   I mean it made sense to me was a story [TS]

01:13:28   like I feel like I was cheated because i [TS]

01:13:30   read the same story plenty times before [TS]

01:13:32   so I kind of understood what they were [TS]

01:13:34   what they were going for it just it was [TS]

01:13:37   it was built on a framework that was [TS]

01:13:38   that was bound to lose for me I think [TS]

01:13:41   pretty much his inner inner life in the [TS]

01:13:43   whole movie is I'm getting a paycheck [TS]

01:13:45   yeah yeah yeahs his story arc is like an [TS]

01:13:48   outline which is that basically things [TS]

01:13:49   are done to him that supposedly advance [TS]

01:13:51   him as a person but it's just things [TS]

01:13:53   that are done to him that though you [TS]

01:13:54   know all the he showed books and then [TS]

01:13:57   later he has his touch learning whatever [TS]

01:14:00   and all those things happen but it sees [TS]

01:14:02   his passive yeah for almost the entire [TS]

01:14:04   thing [TS]

01:14:05   so you're saying he's a vessel of other [TS]

01:14:07   people's ambitions can stop that if I [TS]

01:14:10   think I think the worst part two is the [TS]

01:14:13   fact that you know the title and a good [TS]

01:14:15   chunk of the ideas movie was taken from [TS]

01:14:18   The Wizard of Oz something which I love [TS]

01:14:20   and adore deeply and I feel like it's [TS]

01:14:21   been soiled [TS]

01:14:23   it's never you know you're never gonna [TS]

01:14:25   forget now that you can't spell Zardoz [TS]

01:14:27   without the wizard of oz I would like to [TS]

01:14:30   maybe I need to take some drugs so I can [TS]

01:14:32   forget that Joe Joe what's your verdict [TS]

01:14:35   on this 1i my I'm on Team America still [TS]

01:14:39   firmly nothing is really suede that but [TS]

01:14:42   you know i can i can get on board with a [TS]

01:14:46   maybe there's the ambition to do things [TS]

01:14:48   but I feel like it's the ambition that a [TS]

01:14:51   college fine arts student has and it [TS]

01:14:54   doesn't follow through on the ambition [TS]

01:14:57   so I can't give him like any any points [TS]

01:15:00   for the effort that he said he's trying [TS]

01:15:02   to show here and I I don't enjoy his [TS]

01:15:05   movie in fairness he's probably just as [TS]

01:15:07   doped up as your average college fine [TS]

01:15:09   arts student so it makes you so probably [TS]

01:15:11   if not more so and have to suggest more [TS]

01:15:14   so you compare this to the THX 1138 [TS]

01:15:17   yeah i mean there are there lots of [TS]

01:15:18   totally bizarre so yeah who's this this [TS]

01:15:20   is one of them Hollywood it 10 [TS]

01:15:22   what's your final verdict on this 1i [TS]

01:15:25   gosh i think if I'd only seen the first [TS]

01:15:28   half of this movie i would have been [TS]

01:15:31   much more for it but the way it's so [TS]

01:15:33   thoroughly falls apart and becomes less [TS]

01:15:38   than the sum of its parts by the end of [TS]

01:15:40   it just was really disappointing to me [TS]

01:15:44   that that you know what what I took away [TS]

01:15:48   from it was this sort of weird mystical [TS]

01:15:53   defense of some really bad philosophy [TS]

01:15:55   and completely awful sexual politics and [TS]

01:16:00   all I and that disappointed me in a way [TS]

01:16:05   that I was not expecting at all i was [TS]

01:16:07   expecting to be sort of like haha look [TS]

01:16:11   at the awful seventies movie and some of [TS]

01:16:14   it did that in a way that was much more [TS]

01:16:16   adorable than I thought it was going to [TS]

01:16:18   be which made it feel which made me feel [TS]

01:16:21   even more like depressed when by the end [TS]

01:16:23   I was like well I've just given up [TS]

01:16:25   completely [TS]

01:16:26   there's potential there yeah yeah that's [TS]

01:16:29   the thing that's what makes me sort of [TS]

01:16:30   upset is that there would I don't know [TS]

01:16:33   some [TS]

01:16:34   they were some bits in here that were [TS]

01:16:36   like really really intriguing and [TS]

01:16:40   awesome even you know and I'm some of it [TS]

01:16:43   was just some of the visual stuff was [TS]

01:16:46   was really interesting to me but in the [TS]

01:16:49   end it's like yeah i'm i'm i'm with [TS]

01:16:52   Erica I'm with like most of you I guess [TS]

01:16:55   stay inside my aura you gonna actually [TS]

01:16:59   get sooo no I can't believe I just did [TS]

01:17:02   that is our dogs you did it all right [TS]

01:17:07   Glenn explain explain yourself [TS]

01:17:10   well now it's time to be revealed by [TS]

01:17:12   travelpod well you know I've been [TS]

01:17:15   avoiding watching this movie for years [TS]

01:17:16   because it looked so so awful and I [TS]

01:17:19   heard it was terrible so I thought well [TS]

01:17:21   this is one of these things are never [TS]

01:17:22   gonna watch but i liked Highlander and i [TS]

01:17:26   watch that a million times of high [TS]

01:17:27   school possibly under the influence on [TS]

01:17:28   recreational vehicles or you're on a TV [TS]

01:17:33   wyd vehicles for the bride Winnebagos [TS]

01:17:35   well you know they say the computers [TS]

01:17:37   bicycle for the mind and I so I and [TS]

01:17:41   you're like a lot of movies that were [TS]

01:17:42   from this era in somewhere more or less [TS]

01:17:44   ambitious so I went into this thinking [TS]

01:17:46   like oh god am I getting so i turn the [TS]

01:17:47   thing on and I thought this is so much [TS]

01:17:49   more fascinating and intriguing than I [TS]

01:17:51   thought I expected to be unwatchable and [TS]

01:17:54   ridiculous and instead i kept being [TS]

01:17:55   intrigued by ideas and I sort of hate [TS]

01:17:57   myself for it too but I watched it was [TS]

01:17:59   interesting was laughing and their time [TS]

01:18:00   thinking and laughing with him here he [TS]

01:18:03   wants me to have this feeling that I'm [TS]

01:18:04   like he's off his rocker [TS]

01:18:06   the thing I think that decides for me [TS]

01:18:08   why would say I I'm glad I saw the film [TS]

01:18:10   i can't say i mean i saw that i liked in [TS]

01:18:13   its awfulness [TS]

01:18:14   it's like a you know its high is that [TS]

01:18:17   there's no repercussion for violence [TS]

01:18:19   right so clockwork orange it has the [TS]

01:18:21   advantage of being written by brilliant [TS]

01:18:22   novelists right in the annotation is by [TS]

01:18:24   Stanley Kubrick so it's also an amazing [TS]

01:18:27   film right clockwork orange about the [TS]

01:18:29   nature of violence and it's about [TS]

01:18:30   somebody in the society in that role of [TS]

01:18:32   like how societies change to become [TS]

01:18:34   corrupt and so forth and how society [TS]

01:18:36   tries to structure kind of take the [TS]

01:18:37   perfect monster [TS]

01:18:39   and whatever so there's a repercussion [TS]

01:18:40   of the end we are all complicit in the [TS]

01:18:42   violence and act Alex commits right [TS]

01:18:44   we're all in it at the end of the film [TS]

01:18:45   were in that trench as he's committing [TS]

01:18:48   an act of violence against the woman [TS]

01:18:49   it's terrible and everyone's applauding [TS]

01:18:51   at the top right like that is a real [TS]

01:18:52   thing [TS]

01:18:53   sorry just doesn't have that moment and [TS]

01:18:55   because it doesn't i think it you know [TS]

01:18:56   falls for that reason that that is that [TS]

01:18:59   it is just a plot mechanism in the [TS]

01:19:00   violence moves along and so there are [TS]

01:19:02   interesting aspects of it but i think i [TS]

01:19:04   think i have come to a conclusion after [TS]

01:19:06   listening to everyone i think i have [TS]

01:19:07   achieved level to consciousness i will [TS]

01:19:09   not go to level 2 with you [TS]

01:19:11   jazzy let's go with my verdict is it's [TS]

01:19:15   it's a better crazy Rob that I thought [TS]

01:19:18   but the decree of sort of like rape and [TS]

01:19:20   murder and violence and the extolling of [TS]

01:19:22   a character he doesn't seem to have any [TS]

01:19:23   redeeming trait or character motivation [TS]

01:19:25   or or inner life makes it feel kind of [TS]

01:19:28   bad move that standpoint it's hard to [TS]

01:19:30   recommend it for its camp but it is [TS]

01:19:32   pretty interesting [TS]

01:19:33   yeah and I i would say am I not quite [TS]

01:19:36   sure i would call it a bad movie [TS]

01:19:39   it is a really weird movie and it's not [TS]

01:19:41   certainly not a good movie i would [TS]

01:19:43   probably watch it looks like a good [TS]

01:19:46   movie [TS]

01:19:46   no but I probably watch it right and [TS]

01:19:48   categories here Jace yeah well no it's [TS]

01:19:50   it's it's well so I its spookily good [TS]

01:19:54   it's it's spooky good bad no it's not it [TS]

01:19:58   does not fit cleanly into any given no [TS]

01:20:00   I'm fine i find it a very strange film [TS]

01:20:02   um I like parts of it like like I'm [TS]

01:20:05   fascinated [TS]

01:20:06   I'm fascinated by the how it looks I i [TS]

01:20:10   fight i feel like there was something [TS]

01:20:11   that could have been good here but in [TS]

01:20:14   the end it's just weird and when we you [TS]

01:20:16   know we we can joke about things like it [TS]

01:20:18   looks like an art students project but [TS]

01:20:20   it really does feel like that it feels [TS]

01:20:21   like somebody had a bunch of images and [TS]

01:20:23   wacky ideas and they basically at some [TS]

01:20:26   points it let's just throw all this crap [TS]

01:20:27   up there and maybe it'll all work and it [TS]

01:20:31   doesn't love it and it does number fifth [TS]

01:20:32   fifth element fifth element is sort of [TS]

01:20:34   that way it's a silly film and it's kind [TS]

01:20:37   of what was a look pretty persistent [TS]

01:20:39   yeah i don't remember the story right [TS]

01:20:42   like he thought the slap in high school [TS]

01:20:43   he had this idea and then he got become [TS]

01:20:46   a famous filmmaker to make a ridiculous [TS]

01:20:48   the right so the movie reads like [TS]

01:20:49   something out of high school kids [TS]

01:20:50   notebook is it [TS]

01:20:51   related to that field to its ok here's a [TS]

01:20:53   bunch of money on this thing has been [TS]

01:20:54   running around my head since I was [TS]

01:20:56   prepubescent our only hope just postpone [TS]

01:20:58   I was here well yeah I was drawing that [TS]

01:21:00   floating stone head on my own I peachy [TS]

01:21:02   color now I can make it happen [TS]

01:21:07   they threw me out of school for saying [TS]

01:21:08   the penis is evil now only 300 of them [TS]

01:21:10   all right we've reached the end of this [TS]

01:21:14   edition of the uncomfortable rocket [TS]

01:21:16   surgery dealing with the seventies and i [TS]

01:21:17   realize i would like to thank my guests [TS]
