641: A Fashion Chimney
00:00:09
◼
►
From Relay, this is Upgrade Episode 61.
00:00:13
◼
►
Today's show is brought to you by Fitbod and Notion.
00:00:17
◼
►
My name is Mike Hurley and I'm joined by Jason Snow.
00:00:21
◼
►
Uh interesting calendar things happening.
00:00:23
◼
►
Our last episode we recorded on a Saturday, and now we're
00:00:27
◼
►
gonna be a Tuesday.
00:00:29
◼
►
It was a long time.
00:00:30
◼
►
We were together a long time ago.
00:00:32
◼
►
Now we're back in our our places, and it's a Tuesday.
00:00:36
◼
►
Because um we might as well get this out of the way at the
00:00:40
◼
►
I won the draft.
00:00:45
◼
►
So obviously we're recording a day late because Apple had an event-ish experience thing.
00:00:51
◼
►
We didn't know it we didn't know it was gonna happen when we recorded,
00:00:55
◼
►
so we couldn't draft, so therefore you automatically win the draft that we And
00:01:00
◼
►
there's literally no way for us to
00:01:04
◼
►
we could not have prepared for a draft the day after the podcast a
00:01:07
◼
►
thon and recorded live in Memphis anyway.
00:01:09
◼
►
We weren't me and you had an inkling at that point, but nothing was
00:01:14
◼
►
it wasn't as set feeling as some of the other stuff that we've done
00:01:18
◼
►
these drafts for before.
00:01:20
◼
►
Um and yeah, we there was no way we didn't have and then missing
00:01:24
◼
►
episode where we did a draft that I won and we're not gonna score
00:01:27
◼
►
anything 'cause
00:01:29
◼
►
I'm just new, I guess, and whatever.
00:01:32
◼
►
No, I just continue with my old title and there is no new draft.
00:01:35
◼
►
So so yes, new Apple product announcements, but no drafts.
00:01:37
◼
►
But we still were able to anticipate it.
00:01:39
◼
►
I mean I set my alarm, got up at, you know, before six in
00:01:43
◼
►
the morning here so that I could sit down and write stories about new
00:01:46
◼
►
Apple product announcements and then talk to you.
00:01:48
◼
►
So we've done a bunch of reading and yeah, obviously we we decided to
00:01:51
◼
►
record today's episode on Tuesday, not Monday, because it would have been pretty silly
00:01:55
◼
►
to record yesterday.
00:01:56
◼
►
Knowing that this is happening today.
00:01:58
◼
►
You just d delete that episode out of your podcast player, right?
00:02:01
◼
►
'Cause it's already out of date.
00:02:02
◼
►
And I feel pretty good actually.
00:02:03
◼
►
I feel like this is one of the times where the least amount of
00:02:06
◼
►
people have reached out to ask what we're doing, even though we never said
00:02:09
◼
►
we were gonna do it because everybody just understands what's happening here.
00:02:12
◼
►
Oh yeah, there's a thing tomorrow.
00:02:13
◼
►
They're probably waiting for that.
00:02:14
◼
►
The upgradians get it.
00:02:15
◼
►
But I have a Snell talk question for you and it comes from Jared
00:02:18
◼
►
and Jared wants to know, Jason, have you ever had to buy a new
00:02:22
◼
►
bag or luggage to accommodate some embargoed Apple products?
00:02:25
◼
►
We're just really on a tear here where I just answer no.
00:02:28
◼
►
Um so no It's fun though, right?
00:02:30
◼
►
What do you mean on a tear?
00:02:31
◼
►
What is this?
00:02:32
◼
►
I've been doing a lot of no answers the last few weeks where I
00:02:35
◼
►
just say no on the phone.
00:02:36
◼
►
I've opposed to you.
00:02:38
◼
►
There is a thing called the upgrade feedback form.
00:02:40
◼
►
There are snow talk questions in the form.
00:02:42
◼
►
You can feel free to pick whatever questions you would like to take.
00:02:45
◼
►
I mean, uh no, I don't wanna I don't wanna you do it.
00:02:48
◼
►
But I'm just gonna say my answer is no.
00:02:50
◼
►
There's just no I just don't have a there's no a new bag or
00:02:53
◼
►
Well first off, I mean the idea here would be you'd receive an embargoed
00:02:56
◼
►
product while traveling or you'd have an embargoed product.
00:02:59
◼
►
It happens for a lot of people.
00:03:01
◼
►
It doesn't happen for you, but it happens for a lot of people, right?
00:03:03
◼
►
Where they're like, oh, here's your thing, but you're in cupatino or whatever.
00:03:07
◼
►
And then people have to go home.
00:03:09
◼
►
Here's the here's here's the truth.
00:03:12
◼
►
It is almost never the case that we receive a product before it's announced.
00:03:20
◼
►
And once it's announced, it's not that big a deal.
00:03:24
◼
►
Um, like you're not supposed to if you're under an embargo, I I guess
00:03:29
◼
►
this is what I would say is like you get the new iPhone.
00:03:32
◼
►
And you have a reviews embargo.
00:03:35
◼
►
Well, the new iPhone is announced.
00:03:37
◼
►
Every knows what it looks like.
00:03:39
◼
►
If you Like if you take it out and take pictures with it or
00:03:43
◼
►
are using it and people are like, oh, is that the new iPhone?
00:03:45
◼
►
I mean that's something that's very obvious, like the iPhone duo duo, even that
00:03:52
◼
►
you all you'd need to do is, you know, and you're not supposed to
00:03:55
◼
►
post it on social media and stuff.
00:03:56
◼
►
But like it's announced already.
00:03:58
◼
►
So it's not that big a deal.
00:04:00
◼
►
Um, you're not supposed to use it for content because you're waiting for it
00:04:04
◼
►
to for your review embargo to drop, but that's not a thing you can
00:04:07
◼
►
seal even then, really.
00:04:10
◼
►
So it would only be the case that you'd need to do something like
00:04:13
◼
►
this if you received product that had not yet been announced in advance.
00:04:16
◼
►
And that doesn't happen, basically.
00:04:18
◼
►
So if you had an iPhone duo before before it was released, y would
00:04:23
◼
►
you feel comfortable using it in public or would you choose not to?
00:04:27
◼
►
Like what would you do?
00:04:28
◼
►
If I had an iPhone duo before release, like right now, which I don't,
00:04:33
◼
►
there's your canary in the coal mine.
00:04:35
◼
►
I do I do not have an iPhone Duo.
00:04:38
◼
►
But if I did, would I be comfortable just y walking around with it?
00:04:45
◼
►
Would would I show it on upgrade on the video version or post it
00:04:52
◼
►
to my socials, no, because that's not allowed.
00:04:55
◼
►
But That's a shame.
00:04:56
◼
►
I I'm not I mean, and and I wouldn't go around like giving people
00:05:00
◼
►
demos of it probably, but like it's just not that big a probably.
00:05:04
◼
►
I mean, unless somebody asked real nice.
00:05:06
◼
►
But a honestly, and if they did, I I would show it to them
00:05:08
◼
►
because again, the embargo is really about pr uh disseminating lots of content um
00:05:15
◼
►
about it widely.
00:05:16
◼
►
For a product that everybody already knows is coming out and they know what
00:05:19
◼
►
it is and they've seen the videos.
00:05:20
◼
►
So it's just not it's not a scenario that comes up because almost nobody
00:05:25
◼
►
ever, ever gets an apple product in hand before.
00:05:29
◼
►
Sometimes we'll get information about an apple product before we're gonna have to be
00:05:31
◼
►
able before it's announced.
00:05:33
◼
►
But that's not the same as having it.
00:05:35
◼
►
And the the way it generally works is you might get pre-briefed very rarely.
00:05:40
◼
►
Then there's an announcement.
00:05:41
◼
►
Then maybe you get a review unit.
00:05:43
◼
►
But everybody knows that product exists then.
00:05:45
◼
►
So The the the answer is is is no.
00:05:48
◼
►
I've never had to buy a suitcase in order to stuff iPods or iPads
00:05:53
◼
►
or iPhones or Macs in it.
00:05:56
◼
►
Uh the closest that I've come is sometimes you go to these events and
00:06:00
◼
►
they give you the review unit and and then you got to take a
00:06:03
◼
►
flight home and you're like, where am I going to put this thing?
00:06:06
◼
►
Um, because you know, I I sometimes tend to pack pretty light and then
00:06:11
◼
►
God, now I got a big MacBook box.
00:06:14
◼
►
What do I do with that?
00:06:15
◼
►
See, look, we have actually gotten to the answer for Jared's question.
00:06:19
◼
►
This was Jared's question.
00:06:27
◼
►
If you would like to send in a snow talk question of your own,
00:06:29
◼
►
please go to upgradefeedback.com.
00:06:32
◼
►
Maybe op ask an open question.
00:06:34
◼
►
Uh send in your Snow Talk question and we can answer it on a
00:06:38
◼
►
future episode of the show.
00:06:39
◼
►
We have some follow-up.
00:06:41
◼
►
Matthew wrote in and said, I've recently binged the entire first drop of design
00:06:46
◼
►
in California, and then following Jason's suggestion, read or listened to Steve Jobs in
00:06:51
◼
►
With these two fresh in my head, hearing you both talk about Apple failing
00:06:55
◼
►
to rapidly expand their product line.
00:06:57
◼
►
I wonder if some of that hesitation comes from the history of Apple's low
00:07:00
◼
►
point of a blow to product line that Steve took a chainsaw with upon
00:07:05
◼
►
Do you think that there is some kind of you know, we talk about
00:07:08
◼
►
Apple's kind of like historic cultural DNA, right?
00:07:12
◼
►
And like this being some of the reason why maybe they can hold on
00:07:15
◼
►
to money maybe more than they should sometimes.
00:07:18
◼
►
Do you think that there has been a kind of hesitancy to a bloat
00:07:23
◼
►
to plot product line?
00:07:25
◼
►
I'm reluctant
00:07:29
◼
►
thirty years out from that, to say that that is something that people are
00:07:34
◼
►
really thinking about.
00:07:35
◼
►
I would say Apple is a culture that was built by Steve Jobs upon
00:07:44
◼
►
And you get all of that.
00:07:46
◼
►
You get all that culture.
00:07:47
◼
►
For good and for bad.
00:07:49
◼
►
And so I don't think everybody's like, Oh, remember how many products Steve was
00:07:54
◼
►
confronted with when he returned to Apple?
00:07:57
◼
►
I don't think I don't think people do that.
00:07:58
◼
►
And and maybe the issue is those products were were were bad.
00:08:02
◼
►
One day we'll find out on design in California Also, the you know, honestly,
00:08:06
◼
►
people talk about the four-product grid that he did.
00:08:08
◼
►
It's like, you know, yeah, and then he came up with a G four
00:08:11
◼
►
cube and an X Serve, and they did the iPod, and they like it
00:08:15
◼
►
was four-product grid for a very small amount of time, and that was really
00:08:19
◼
►
just for Mac and that was really him saying we're going back to basics.
00:08:22
◼
►
That was I I I run into people who think four product that every
00:08:26
◼
►
pr company that's successful should have four products in in a square.
00:08:30
◼
►
And it's just not true.
00:08:31
◼
►
It's just not true.
00:08:32
◼
►
It wasn't true then.
00:08:33
◼
►
It was a it was it's like saying the um if you see a
00:08:36
◼
►
stylist, they blew it and saying, See, Apple Pencil shows that Steve Jobs is
00:08:40
◼
►
rolling over in his grave.
00:08:41
◼
►
And it's that's not what he meant.
00:08:43
◼
►
I was just this morning talking to a deaner about the zombie arms thing
00:08:48
◼
►
the touchscreen laptops.
00:08:49
◼
►
It's all that stuff.
00:08:50
◼
►
It's like it's only no one wants to watch video on an iPod.
00:08:53
◼
►
All of this stuff is just a thing that is said for the time
00:08:56
◼
►
that it's said.
00:08:57
◼
►
And some of it is contextual right?
00:08:58
◼
►
The whole point with a stylus is if you had to use a stylus
00:09:01
◼
►
because there was no touch screen, it was it, you know, you had to
00:09:04
◼
►
push with a stylus in order to get it to work.
00:09:06
◼
►
Then they blew it because you shouldn't need that.
00:09:08
◼
►
You should be able to use your finger.
00:09:10
◼
►
Adding a stylus as an option for drawing is not the same context.
00:09:14
◼
►
So the four-product grid, also in a context, very silly.
00:09:18
◼
►
That said, do I think that there maybe is some
00:09:22
◼
►
Apple cultural thing about restraining the number of products they do.
00:09:29
◼
►
M I mean, I think the bar is high to release a product at
00:09:32
◼
►
I do think that that's true.
00:09:34
◼
►
So I do think that that comes from this.
00:09:36
◼
►
But that's not quite the same.
00:09:37
◼
►
Like they just need to decide as we're gonna talk about today that there
00:09:40
◼
►
are some products that they that they want to do and that they can
00:09:43
◼
►
I'll also point out today's Apple makes way more products than Apple made when
00:09:46
◼
►
Steve Jobs came back to Apple because they make a zillion iPhone models and
00:09:51
◼
►
iPad models and Mac models and Apple Watch models and even just the iPhone
00:09:58
◼
►
wouldn't fit into a four product grid today.
00:10:01
◼
►
There's more than four.
00:10:02
◼
►
There's more than four.
00:10:04
◼
►
So so you just gotta think beyond that.
00:10:05
◼
►
But I do I to to Matthew's point, I I'm sure that within Apple
00:10:10
◼
►
there is at least something that is about crossing a threshold of do we
00:10:15
◼
►
think we should be doing this product?
00:10:16
◼
►
And I think sometimes it bites them.
00:10:17
◼
►
I think that you could argue that maybe that was what was going on
00:10:20
◼
►
when they stopped making displays and when they kill the airport.
00:10:25
◼
►
Last week we spoke about like if Apple were lucky to pick Burgundy and
00:10:31
◼
►
Um or if there'd been some kind of trying to guess trends.
00:10:35
◼
►
Yeah no and I was thinking while we were talking about that, I was
00:10:37
◼
►
thinking to myself, if only we knew somebody at Pottery Barn who could answer
00:10:40
◼
►
this question.
00:10:41
◼
►
Steven wrote in and said I used to work at Pottery Barn in the
00:10:43
◼
►
product development department.
00:10:45
◼
►
Every year a company that Pottery Bomb paid about seventy five thousand dollars would
00:10:50
◼
►
come and do a presentation about the next year's trends, including colours.
00:10:54
◼
►
They called it forecasting.
00:10:55
◼
►
But what we realize is if every Fortune five hundred company or whatever paid
00:10:59
◼
►
the same firm believing that they gave them insight.
00:11:02
◼
►
Was that forecasting?
00:11:03
◼
►
Were you just following what the trend company said, which then created a trend?
00:11:07
◼
►
Is it chicken and egg?
00:11:08
◼
►
We can't be sure.
00:11:09
◼
►
And then Edward wrote in and said, there was a fantastic podcast from ninety-nine
00:11:13
◼
►
percent invisible from about ten years ago that stuck with me.
00:11:16
◼
►
They talk about the role of WGSN, a trend forecasting company for the fashion
00:11:21
◼
►
They provide insights and inspiration to designers, retailers, and marketers through its reports, images,
00:11:26
◼
►
and design templates.
00:11:28
◼
►
Yeah, uh this is um this is great because there's the look, there is
00:11:34
◼
►
identifying trends and there is solidifying trends.
00:11:38
◼
►
And I think the answer is i it it's not quite that it's egg.
00:11:41
◼
►
I think what happens is that there are people intensely watching.
00:11:47
◼
►
It's like a funnel, right?
00:11:49
◼
►
Like there are there are things that are happening and people notice them.
00:11:53
◼
►
And then they're like, oh, that might be a trend.
00:11:55
◼
►
And I think that's how fashion works in general is you kind of notice
00:11:59
◼
►
the a thing happening.
00:12:00
◼
►
And then there are people whose job it is to like say, hey, did
00:12:03
◼
►
And there's other people whose job it is to say, uh, let's let's quantify
00:12:07
◼
►
what's going on.
00:12:08
◼
►
And there are people who pay a lot of money to even Pottery Barn
00:12:12
◼
►
will pay a lot of money to get a leg up on what people
00:12:15
◼
►
are are doing.
00:12:16
◼
►
And it may be fake.
00:12:18
◼
►
It may be real.
00:12:20
◼
►
But I think uh it's a little like iPhone cases.
00:12:22
◼
►
It's like if you can get a jump on it, if you know the
00:12:25
◼
►
shape of the iPhone, if you know sort of where the trends are going,
00:12:32
◼
►
you can be there But it does make it potentially a little artificial, right?
00:12:38
◼
►
Because you may be surfacing things that happen to surface because of reasons that
00:12:42
◼
►
are not necessarily right.
00:12:44
◼
►
So there there's your that's your mystery, your chicken and egg kind of thing.
00:12:47
◼
►
I wanna mention here one of my favorite books ever is called Pattern Recognition.
00:12:52
◼
►
It's by William Gibson.
00:12:54
◼
►
It's a novel.
00:12:55
◼
►
Main character of pattern recognition is a cool finder.
00:12:59
◼
►
Her job is to determine what is emerging as cool from culture.
00:13:07
◼
►
Oh, you've told me about this book before.
00:13:10
◼
►
She's and she's allergic to brands, which is the other funny thing about it.
00:13:12
◼
►
She's allergic to brands.
00:13:13
◼
►
She sees she sees the Michelin man, Babendum, the Michelin man, and has a
00:13:17
◼
►
panic has panic attacks.
00:13:19
◼
►
She's allergic to the Michelin man.
00:13:21
◼
►
Uh it's a great book.
00:13:23
◼
►
It is William Gibson, famous for Neuromancer, soon to be an Apple TV series.
00:13:26
◼
►
Cannot wait for that.
00:13:27
◼
►
I think pattern recognition is his best book if you haven't read it.
00:13:30
◼
►
I highly recommend it, especially because it is about Gibson in general.
00:13:33
◼
►
And that book in particular is about like observing culture and observing brands.
00:13:37
◼
►
And he talks about sort of the business of it a little bit too.
00:13:40
◼
►
Uh fun book, but that's kind of what's going on here, I think, is
00:13:43
◼
►
is is it is it real or is it synthetic?
00:13:46
◼
►
And the answer is again, there's probably a funnel of trying to notice trends
00:13:50
◼
►
in advance, but it gets magnified and maybe distorted and maybe it's real and
00:13:54
◼
►
maybe it's not.
00:13:56
◼
►
But I'm sure, you know, 'cause it's not as simple as there's a conveyor
00:13:59
◼
►
belt and a and a you know, a a a burgundy egg comes out
00:14:04
◼
►
of the conveyor belt and everybody goes, Oh, it's broken team!
00:14:06
◼
►
Or we I I got the I got the smoke from the from the
00:14:09
◼
►
the chimney from the for the Pope wrong last time.
00:14:13
◼
►
The white smoke means there's pope.
00:14:15
◼
►
Black smoke means there's not a pope.
00:14:18
◼
►
We had a couple of people write in, but I felt like it wasn't
00:14:21
◼
►
necessarily worthy of follow up, but I'm happy you brought it up.
00:14:24
◼
►
I'm just saying somewhere in like maybe Milan, some other part of uh the
00:14:27
◼
►
Italian peninsula there is a there's a fashion chimney and the like the burgundy
00:14:32
◼
►
smoke comes out and everybody goes, Oh, what does it mean?
00:14:35
◼
►
And then they're off with that.
00:14:37
◼
►
You you did say like, you know, is it real or is it manufactured?
00:14:41
◼
►
And I think the answer to that question is just yes.
00:14:45
◼
►
It's a whole process that goes from emergent to manufactured, from real to f
00:14:53
◼
►
I'm not fake, but like from real to artificial.
00:14:57
◼
►
At lightning pace probably too.
00:14:59
◼
►
Yeah, but it is so fast today how these things move.
00:15:03
◼
►
Yeah, imagine.
00:15:04
◼
►
You're just on an Instagram feed somewhere.
00:15:12
◼
►
Instagram and or has built an AI algorithm to log everything that appears on
00:15:18
◼
►
influencers' Instagrams and co correlate it or something.
00:15:25
◼
►
Tim Cook has been hanging out with the king again, so they visited the
00:15:29
◼
►
Music Hall together and announced a partnership with the King's Trust to launch a
00:15:32
◼
►
new education program to help young people build careers in creative industries.
00:15:37
◼
►
So they're gonna be giving people access to what they're calling Apple experts, these
00:15:41
◼
►
people that work at Apple in their creative kind of endeavors, um, guide them
00:15:45
◼
►
through workshops and stuff like that.
00:15:47
◼
►
Um and then while speaking to the media during the event, Tim Cook told
00:15:50
◼
►
the independent how he's feeling about his new role and working alongside John Turners.
00:15:55
◼
►
He says, John and I have an incredible level of trust in each other.
00:15:58
◼
►
The relationship must be based on trust and the communication must be frequent and
00:16:01
◼
►
significant.
00:16:02
◼
►
But other than that, what I'm focused on right now is worldwide policy and
00:16:06
◼
►
the interface of governments around the world matters because there are lots of things
00:16:10
◼
►
where we're trying to advocate sorry, trying to advance or advocate for change.
00:16:15
◼
►
There's significant amount of work in that, and I'm doing that and helping John
00:16:18
◼
►
in any way he sees fit.
00:16:20
◼
►
I'm not meddling, I'm I'm not a meddler.
00:16:22
◼
►
Not a meddler.
00:16:23
◼
►
Not a meddler, everyone.
00:16:24
◼
►
I oh and by the way, this guy over here, he's king of England.
00:16:28
◼
►
But they ain't meddling, all right?
00:16:30
◼
►
Not meddling.
00:16:31
◼
►
No meddling.
00:16:32
◼
►
I'm just doing advancing and advocating over here with the king of England.
00:16:35
◼
►
They have a there's literally uh, you know, a picture of Tim Cook and
00:16:38
◼
►
the King of England standing next to each other.
00:16:40
◼
►
I just that's a it's wacky.
00:16:41
◼
►
That's what I think that's so weird.
00:16:44
◼
►
They get on.
00:16:45
◼
►
I don't know why.
00:16:46
◼
►
I just have a feeling that the two of them would just get on
00:16:51
◼
►
Well, it's that southern charm that Tim brings to the table.
00:16:54
◼
►
And the English charm from the like you know, like I feel like the
00:16:57
◼
►
two of them together.
00:16:58
◼
►
The classic famous English royal charm.
00:17:02
◼
►
Yes, absolutely.
00:17:03
◼
►
Are you kidding me?
00:17:04
◼
►
Super Super charming.
00:17:07
◼
►
Prince Charming he was for many, many, many years.
00:17:09
◼
►
Indeed, right?
00:17:10
◼
►
Now he is King Charming.
00:17:13
◼
►
King Charming the Third.
00:17:14
◼
►
Speaking of John Turnus, his first earning call is set for November second.
00:17:19
◼
►
I'm sure you've got your calendar already locked in.
00:17:21
◼
►
Oh well I don't.
00:17:23
◼
►
You know, genuinely, when I see this news story, I'm like, I'm bringing it
00:17:27
◼
►
to the show, just in case.
00:17:30
◼
►
This is Jason's first time hearing about it.
00:17:32
◼
►
It's not November you but you got it wrong.
00:17:34
◼
►
It's not November second.
00:17:35
◼
►
It's November twenty ninth.
00:17:37
◼
►
No, you linked to the nine to five Mac article and they got it
00:17:40
◼
►
wrong in their lead.
00:17:40
◼
►
They say Oh they say November second, but it's November twenty ninth.
00:17:44
◼
►
It's November nine
00:17:47
◼
►
Look, look, they're not gonna do it.
00:17:49
◼
►
Oh no, except this says it's the oh man, this is a mess.
00:17:54
◼
►
Monday, November 2nd at 2 p.m.
00:17:56
◼
►
So it is November second.
00:17:59
◼
►
I don't know what the twenty nine is for because that's really weird because
00:18:03
◼
►
that's like a Sunday.
00:18:04
◼
►
So November second, that's it.
00:18:05
◼
►
I I they don't usually do it on a Monday, but they're doing it
00:18:07
◼
►
on a Monday.
00:18:08
◼
►
I don't what's going on there.
00:18:09
◼
►
So it's November second.
00:18:10
◼
►
The November twenty ninth is in the arts school.
00:18:12
◼
►
Does that mean oh, what does that mean for for upgrade though?
00:18:16
◼
►
Hmm, we're gonna have to think about that one.
00:18:19
◼
►
The question is, no one knows.
00:18:21
◼
►
That's what it means.
00:18:21
◼
►
Nobody knows.
00:18:22
◼
►
What does it mean for upgrade?
00:18:24
◼
►
What will we do?
00:18:25
◼
►
What will we do?
00:18:26
◼
►
That's the yeah okay.
00:18:28
◼
►
Well we'll figure it out.
00:18:29
◼
►
Yeah we'll figure it out.
00:18:31
◼
►
Do we do we wait a week for Apple results?
00:18:35
◼
►
I I don't feel like it's worth delaying.
00:18:37
◼
►
Gotta hold the podcast for two days.
00:18:39
◼
►
No, 'cause it's
00:18:42
◼
►
Uh lots of six colors charts that are built in JavaScript now.
00:18:47
◼
►
Yes on that day.
00:18:50
◼

00:21:07
◼
►
So today, uh at an event in New York and on the website, Apple
00:21:12
◼
►
unveiled a product that is called the Apple Home View.
00:21:16
◼
►
This is what we have been calling the home hub or the home pad.
00:21:21
◼
►
It is called the Apple Home View.
00:21:24
◼
►
It is a seven inch kind of square.
00:21:28
◼
►
It looks square, but I'm not ins sure if it's exactly square.
00:21:31
◼
►
Um liquid retina display.
00:21:33
◼
►
Sitting on an aluminium body, which is available in four colors.
00:21:37
◼
►
Silver, starlight, rose, pink, and space gray.
00:21:40
◼
►
The I will say the main version of this device.
00:21:43
◼
►
There are two versions of it.
00:21:44
◼
►
The main version um has a stainless steel hinge that attaches to the aluminium
00:21:49
◼
►
body that you can use to adjust the angle.
00:21:52
◼
►
It is lightly reminiscent of the G four.
00:21:56
◼
►
Yeah, the iMac G4.
00:21:58
◼
►
The rumor from Mark Erman is that remember, this is I'm gonna say the
00:22:01
◼
►
words now, Mike.
00:22:02
◼
►
I'm gonna say the phrase.
00:22:03
◼
►
Tabletop robot.
00:22:04
◼
►
Tabletop robot.
00:22:06
◼
►
It's not a robot, but uh the rumor is that the home the sorry
00:22:09
◼
►
the home view two Mm-hmm.
00:22:11
◼
►
Will come out next year.
00:22:12
◼
►
I know this hasn't even shipped yet and I'm talking about the next one.
00:22:14
◼
►
But they they've been backed up for a while.
00:22:16
◼
►
This product was supposed to come out last.
00:22:18
◼
►
It was supposed to come out in early 2025.
00:22:21
◼
►
Um, but it's waited till now and then a year later, you know, presumably
00:22:25
◼
►
it's gonna get replaced with one that they the tabletop robot version has will
00:22:29
◼
►
probably be even more like the G4, because it will probably have an arm
00:22:32
◼
►
and then will be able to move itself to adjust, which is wild.
00:22:36
◼
►
But this one has got a hinge and it's a little pod.
00:22:39
◼
►
Like it's nice.
00:22:40
◼
►
It's I will say adorable.
00:22:42
◼
►
This is an adorable looking piece of technology.
00:22:44
◼
►
Because it's it's little.
00:22:46
◼
►
It's a little guy, which I appreciate.
00:22:47
◼
►
A little guy.
00:22:48
◼
►
It's a little guy.
00:22:48
◼
►
It's a little guy sitting there on your counter or whatever.
00:22:50
◼
►
I and as somebody who's had I have been staring at the screens from
00:22:54
◼
►
Amazon and Google that I've had in my kitchen for like, I don't know,
00:22:57
◼
►
it must be almost ten years now, thinking, Come on, Apple.
00:23:00
◼
►
Yeah, give me something.
00:23:01
◼
►
Give me something.
00:23:01
◼
►
And they like suffice it to say, I bought one immediately in space gray,
00:23:08
◼
►
which is gonna be great to see because the space gray will be almost
00:23:11
◼
►
exactly the same color as the silver.
00:23:13
◼
►
But you know, whatever.
00:23:14
◼
►
So Jason, I also bought one and I was sending pictures to my wife.
00:23:18
◼
►
I'm like which which shall we get?
00:23:20
◼
►
And at first she's like, Get the white one.
00:23:22
◼
►
I'm like there isn't a white one.
00:23:23
◼
►
There's silver one.
00:23:24
◼
►
Because the color selector is like, it just it's impossible to understand.
00:23:28
◼
►
And I she was like, Maybe the space gray.
00:23:31
◼
►
And And I was like, Yeah, but what about the pink though?
00:23:33
◼
►
And she's like
00:23:35
◼
►
or maybe so we ordered a pink one.
00:23:36
◼
►
You've seen my house.
00:23:37
◼
►
There's lots of pink in my house.
00:23:39
◼
►
You got you got the pink in there.
00:23:40
◼
►
Yeah, my my kitchen is is kind of green.
00:23:43
◼
►
So I didn't have an option here, so I won't space gray.
00:23:46
◼
►
Uh apparently this screen can get really dim to zero point three nits.
00:23:51
◼
►
Apple says this is quote perfect for the nightstand, which made me chuckle 'cause
00:23:55
◼
►
like how many do you want me to have?
00:23:57
◼
►
Just like every room.
00:23:58
◼
►
It goes anywhere.
00:23:59
◼
►
If you've got a room, put it in all of them.
00:24:01
◼
►
I I think I think that may be more important for the other use
00:24:04
◼
►
of this too, which is that you can also buy it with a wall
00:24:08
◼
►
Um and put it and put it on a wall.
00:24:11
◼
►
Um and for that, depending on where you are, you might not want it,
00:24:15
◼
►
you know, it see it being dim when it's n nighttime is a good
00:24:20
◼
►
thing, right?
00:24:20
◼
►
Like when when there's everybody's asleep or whatever.
00:24:23
◼
►
Um and we'll have to see how that goes.
00:24:25
◼
►
The mounting stories for these are gonna be fascinating.
00:24:28
◼
►
The the war mounted one looks fascinating to me.
00:24:31
◼
►
It just looks like an Apple Watch stuck to a wall.
00:24:33
◼
►
Stuck to a wall, big apple watch on your wall.
00:24:35
◼
►
It still has speakers in it apparently too.
00:24:37
◼
►
Um so I mean I'm sure we're gonna talk about this as we go,
00:24:40
◼
►
but you can see all the different aspects of Apple's technology that they've kind
00:24:43
◼
►
of like pushed together here too, because it the faces look like Apple Watch,
00:24:46
◼
►
but I would say they also look a lot like standby.
00:24:48
◼
►
But the standby faces on the iPhone also look a lot like Apple Watch.
00:24:52
◼
►
Yeah so like they're all kind of feeding each other here.
00:24:55
◼
►
But that's the idea is that is that there are these different uh faces
00:24:59
◼
►
or views that you can have on that when it's asleep, basically.
00:25:04
◼
►
Uh the war mounted version can be attached using uh a set of three
00:25:09
◼
►
per well you choose some three purpose built mounts from Schneider home with options
00:25:14
◼
►
for self installation or professional installation.
00:25:17
◼
►
And this version has power over Ethernet support, which is kinda wild.
00:25:22
◼
►
It's great, but like I can tell you, that that is a that is
00:25:27
◼
►
a talk about professional installation.
00:25:29
◼
►
I think that's a a uh home installer we're gonna put, you know, we're
00:25:33
◼
►
gonna home and we're gonna put in a bunch of smart tech and we're
00:25:36
◼
►
gonna put in a control screen.
00:25:38
◼
►
And I'll and sometimes what happens there is they're running stuff via PoE.
00:25:43
◼
►
And like if you've got a mount and you've got, you know, you're running
00:25:47
◼
►
somewhere on a wall, in a wall with PoE, um, and that gets you
00:25:51
◼
►
your networking and it gets you your power.
00:25:54
◼
►
Like I that to me that's what that says is is this is a
00:25:57
◼
►
this is a message for uh especially people who want to, you know, have
00:26:02
◼
►
a whole system installed by this is like I think this is fantastic.
00:26:06
◼
►
I I I get the reasons why they would have it.
00:26:09
◼
►
But like this is the company that you know, like the the home pod
00:26:12
◼
►
was a non detachable cable, right?
00:26:14
◼
►
It's like these this is the logical thing to have as an option for
00:26:19
◼
►
a product like this, which clearly will be installed as a smart home screen
00:26:23
◼
►
to have power over Ethernet.
00:26:25
◼
►
I'm just happy that they've made that decision.
00:26:27
◼
►
Like yes, we're we're going to give that as an option is like is
00:26:30
◼
►
So I think that's great.
00:26:32
◼
►
So this is a product that works for up to six individuals can be
00:26:37
◼
►
kind of like registered to the home view.
00:26:40
◼
►
I'm gonna read a quote from Apple's press release which was from Greg Joswiak.
00:26:44
◼
►
Apple HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel
00:26:47
◼
►
completely personal to each user.
00:26:49
◼
►
It recognizes your face to shift from a household screen to your own experience,
00:26:53
◼
►
fills the room with incredible sound, keeps you connected to people who matter most
00:26:56
◼
►
at FaceTime, and makes it easy to control your smart home.
00:26:59
◼
►
And it's Apple Intelligence with Siri AI at its core, drawing on personal context
00:27:04
◼
►
from your iPhone to help you find what you need and get more done,
00:27:07
◼
►
all while keeping everyone's information private and secure.
00:27:10
◼
►
So your personal content it they s also say personal content stays private from
00:27:15
◼
►
others, while shared photo albums and music can be easily enjoyed by everyone in
00:27:19
◼
►
a household, including guests.
00:27:21
◼
►
So it feels like you will get the best experience in this product if
00:27:25
◼
►
you're an iCloud family, because then content that is readily shared amongst the users
00:27:31
◼
►
that are using the home view can just easily be displayed because everybody has
00:27:37
◼
►
agreed it's a shareable thing.
00:27:39
◼
►
That's that's what I read from this, um, the way that they're talking about
00:27:43
◼
►
Uh so that's interesting.
00:27:45
◼
►
I will say I've got a some quotes here from the Verge and from
00:27:50
◼
►
It feels like I think surprisingly, Apple pre-briefed on this product.
00:27:56
◼
►
They pre-briefed.
00:27:57
◼
►
Which is not a thing that they do very much, but they did for
00:28:01
◼
►
It does happen.
00:28:02
◼
►
It does it does happen.
00:28:03
◼
►
I didn't brief for this.
00:28:04
◼
►
I my briefing is later today.
00:28:05
◼
►
Well I had published their story twenty minutes early, which is rough.
00:28:09
◼
►
Um that didn't go well.
00:28:11
◼
►
Didn't go well for them.
00:28:12
◼
►
Great story though.
00:28:12
◼
►
I'll put link in the show notes.
00:28:13
◼
►
So yeah, so how do you we've been asking all along, like how do
00:28:16
◼
►
you deal with Apple intelligence?
00:28:17
◼
►
How do you deal with personalization?
00:28:18
◼
►
And like they're they're trying to make this thing where it's recognizing the voices,
00:28:22
◼
►
it knows who is making the request and it's switching contexts and um and
00:28:28
◼
►
personal context.
00:28:29
◼
►
And this this is true of the Apple Apple TV as well, and and
00:28:32
◼
►
I think the HomePod Mini, is there's what seems to be going on is
00:28:38
◼
►
there's a way to farm out a personal context request to an to the
00:28:44
◼
►
connected iPhone.
00:28:46
◼
►
iPhone or iPad, it says.
00:28:48
◼
►
Or iPad, yes.
00:28:49
◼
►
Which is nice.
00:28:50
◼
►
These devices don't
00:28:53
◼
►
have all your personal data on them.
00:28:55
◼
►
They're ancillary.
00:28:56
◼
►
They're not syncing and all of those things.
00:28:59
◼
►
But your iPhone does.
00:29:01
◼
►
So what they do is they take the request and presumably are passing it
00:29:05
◼
►
on to the more powerful, more cap capable iPhone or iPad, and it's able
00:29:09
◼
►
to look at your personal context and send a reply back.
00:29:12
◼
►
And then when there's not an iPhone around, I think there's a lighter version
00:29:16
◼
►
of Siri AI that is probably basically cloud based.
00:29:19
◼
►
That these all of these devices I think use as a fallback.
00:29:23
◼
►
And then there's also some projection.
00:29:24
◼
►
We were wondering about the app story here.
00:29:27
◼
►
Um, and uh am I skipping ahead?
00:29:30
◼
►
Should we talk about it now or wait, you're skipping ahead there's no there's
00:29:34
◼
►
no constraints on what we're gonna do.
00:29:36
◼
►
So the app story here, they say it's gonna have like Apple, kind of
00:29:40
◼
►
Apple apps, but also some other things will be supported.
00:29:43
◼
►
But also they're supporting, especially for audio, a bunch of other things.
00:29:49
◼
►
It sounds like this is kind of wild, but it sounds like they're using
00:29:56
◼
►
as the mechanism to project certain apps
00:30:02
◼
►
from your phone, which is kinda wild.
00:30:06
◼
►
So So I don't know.
00:30:07
◼
►
There's yeah.
00:30:08
◼
►
It's been a little unclear.
00:30:10
◼
►
A lot of people are writing about this today.
00:30:11
◼
►
Um so this is from Julian Chicatu at Wired.
00:30:15
◼
►
A handful of third party media apps like Spotify are available and developers can
00:30:19
◼
►
bring over existing CarPlay apps.
00:30:21
◼
►
If you're If your iPhone already has one of these CarPlay apps installed, it
00:30:24
◼
►
can automatically appear on the home view after setup.
00:30:29
◼
►
My understanding of this my understanding of this is it is a set of
00:30:33
◼
►
select media apps that Apple has chosen.
00:30:37
◼
►
This is not all CarPlay apps, and it's not even all CarPlay media apps.
00:30:43
◼
►
Although although
00:30:46
◼
►
if this is the method that they're using, there will probably be a a
00:30:50
◼
►
process, I would think.
00:30:51
◼
►
People will want to so let's talk let's let's say let's say Overcast.
00:30:56
◼
►
Overcast is a media app and it has CarPlay.
00:31:00
◼
►
It wouldn't really surprise me if Marco is able to put overcast on this
00:31:07
◼
►
Um, but maybe not right away, right?
00:31:09
◼
►
Maybe that takes time and you have to go through a thing and you
00:31:11
◼
►
have to apply for an entitlement or apply for approval to be in the
00:31:14
◼
►
program and all that.
00:31:15
◼
►
But I do think that Wired mentioning CarPlay and and that was where I
00:31:22
◼
►
that's interesting, right?
00:31:23
◼
►
Like like how do I get stuff from my iPhone on this device that
00:31:28
◼
►
doesn't have an app store?
00:31:29
◼
►
And I was thinking it would be kind of like pushing widgets and all
00:31:32
◼
►
But straight up CarPlay for selected apps, that works too, right?
00:31:38
◼
►
Like if if uh if all I want is to see my now playing
00:31:41
◼
►
and control it from my little screen, CarPlay solves that problem.
00:31:46
◼
►
And it's just from iPhone anyway.
00:31:47
◼
►
It's it's essentially playing it from my phone, but that it gives me the
00:31:51
◼
►
the the heads up display while I'm in the kitchen listening to a podcast.
00:31:54
◼
►
Like that's cool.
00:31:56
◼
►
I like that.
00:31:56
◼
►
So interesting like approach to them trying to figure out how do we get
00:32:01
◼
►
personal stuff from your iPhone and from your apps on here without building yet
00:32:05
◼
►
another app store.
00:32:06
◼
►
Yeah, so you know, primarily like we expected, like Apple's built a bunch of
00:32:10
◼
►
apps, like a bunch of the versions of their apps that are on the
00:32:15
◼
►
device natively.
00:32:16
◼
►
You know, things like messages and FaceTime, obviously the home app and their media
00:32:21
◼
►
And then you there is this selection of CarPlay apps that are other media
00:32:27
◼
►
Spotify has been mentioned as one of them, and I believe Audible I've seen
00:32:30
◼
►
people reference to as as being available.
00:32:34
◼
►
But it it there seems to be, as you say, some kind of process
00:32:38
◼
►
that they'll probably open up.
00:32:39
◼
►
But you know, initially they've worked with a selection of partners and they're not
00:32:43
◼
►
just kind of like throwing the doors open.
00:32:45
◼
►
Well, clearly what they didn't want is it only does Apple stuff and otherwise
00:32:49
◼
►
forget about it.
00:32:49
◼
►
Instead it's more like You can't launch this thing and be like you can't
00:32:52
◼
►
listen to your Spotify music.
00:32:53
◼
►
Like it's just not the Exactly.
00:32:55
◼
►
You can't do that.
00:32:56
◼
►
Like it doesn't so they doesn't make any sense.
00:32:58
◼
►
But I I I'm really curious about the mechanisms here.
00:33:01
◼
►
I'm sure we will learn more about technically how this is gonna work as
00:33:05
◼
►
But like I think that's really interesting that they're talking about CarPlay.
00:33:08
◼
►
Um I kind of assumed that they would they would do widget widget projection
00:33:12
◼
►
and maybe they will at some point.
00:33:13
◼
►
It is unclear.
00:33:14
◼
►
So I I'm I'm trying to I'm sure many like many people, I'm trying
00:33:18
◼
►
to get an answer on this.
00:33:18
◼
►
But David Pierce at the Verge says when idle the home view can display
00:33:22
◼
►
photo faces clock faces and Snoopy faces.
00:33:25
◼
►
Or you can use a modular face to show widgets from your most used
00:33:28
◼
►
apps, such as your to do list, World Clock, and Podcasts.
00:33:31
◼
►
Now what I don't understand from what David's and maybe I assume he didn't
00:33:35
◼
►
know necessarily either, uh can third party apps be in that?
00:33:39
◼
►
Um I would expect, but there I I have not seen anything that would
00:33:44
◼
►
suggest the answer is definitely yes yet.
00:33:47
◼
►
Al also, and this is a thread that has run through all of Apple's
00:33:50
◼
►
announcements this fall.
00:33:51
◼
►
Some Some of the software stuff's just not ready yet.
00:33:53
◼
►
And so this is a brand new product.
00:33:55
◼
►
I know it's been hanging out there for a while, but like the the
00:33:58
◼
►
the software, key software issue here with Siri AI.
00:34:01
◼
►
I would not be surprised if over time the third party story here evolves,
00:34:08
◼
►
But this is what they this is what they were able to ship.
00:34:11
◼
►
Yeah, I think so.
00:34:12
◼
►
Um so there's some other interesting details.
00:34:14
◼
►
So this is also from uh David at the verge.
00:34:17
◼
►
A home view uses facial recognition and the presence of your recently unlocked iPhone
00:34:22
◼
►
on the home Wi-Fi network to authenticate you.
00:34:24
◼
►
So it's using other signals to try and make sure if you're in the
00:34:29
◼
►
house and then it knows to look for you or listen for you and
00:34:33
◼
►
then give you what you need.
00:34:34
◼
►
Like you mentioned this already, but obviously uh it it uses your your contacts
00:34:40
◼
►
for Siri AI requests and anybody can ask Homeview a question and it will
00:34:47
◼
►
use the broad world knowledge kind of answer base right to give an answer
00:34:53
◼
►
Like, you know, like what's the personal context, all that kind of stuff.
00:34:56
◼
►
The more generic Siri A app.
00:34:57
◼
►
That then needs authentication.
00:34:59
◼
►
Or setting a timer or you know, whatever.
00:35:01
◼
►
Stuff like that.
00:35:02
◼
►
And any conversation you start on Home View is saved in the Siri app
00:35:06
◼
►
on your devices too.
00:35:07
◼
►
So on your device that it knows it's you and and that's 'cause it's
00:35:11
◼
►
really it's going to the iPhone at that point.
00:35:13
◼
►
This is how they've ha chosen to handle sort of like Siri handoff in
00:35:16
◼
►
the Siri AI era is the same thing, which is it's
00:35:21
◼
►
all that stuff that it doesn't know.
00:35:22
◼
►
So talking a little bit more about the the kind of the user interface
00:35:26
◼
►
for this, here's a fun detail.
00:35:27
◼
►
The home view interface intelligently adjusts based on the user's distance, showing simpler information
00:35:33
◼
►
that's viewable from across the room and richer details as they step closer.
00:35:37
◼
►
I I really want to see what that's like.
00:35:39
◼
►
'Cause that sounds really cool, but Yeah, it's like a discoverability thing where the
00:35:44
◼
►
closer you get, the more it it becomes a higher density display.
00:35:49
◼
►
And this is one reason why there probably isn't a real app story yes
00:35:54
◼
►
yet of any kind.
00:35:55
◼
►
Complicated.
00:35:56
◼
►
Even if eventually you uh third parties will be able to like project from
00:36:00
◼
►
an iPhone, like that's a whole new idea, right?
00:36:03
◼
►
To that that you have a uh
00:36:06
◼
►
Software display that adjusts based on the distance the user is away from the
00:36:10
◼
►
It's a cool idea, right?
00:36:12
◼
►
It's a cool idea, but that's a new that's a new one for Apple.
00:36:17
◼
►
And the user interface overall, it is like this weird mixture, as you said,
00:36:22
◼
►
of a bunch of different things, but mostly kind of from a UI perspective,
00:36:26
◼
►
it's a lot of like Apple Watch and T V OS kind of stuff,
00:36:30
◼
►
big chunky butt buttons, some high contrast elements, minimal, like overall that the user
00:36:35
◼
►
interface is very minimal.
00:36:37
◼
►
I I do a good job filling the screen.
00:36:39
◼
►
Um it has a faces system, like they call it faces for kind of
00:36:43
◼
►
like the the home screen views.
00:36:45
◼
►
And they have different face options.
00:36:47
◼
►
So they have photos faces with the clock on them, which you know is
00:36:50
◼
►
very much like my favorite Apple Watch face.
00:36:52
◼
►
These are the big Apple Watch faces, basically.
00:36:54
◼
►
They have something called the flow face, which dynamically responds to physical presence and
00:36:58
◼
►
movement, transferring home view into a piece of interactive art.
00:37:02
◼
►
So whatever it is that's doing the kind of the UI visibility thing, they're
00:37:06
◼
►
also doing something visual.
00:37:09
◼
►
Visualizer, yeah, of some kind.
00:37:10
◼
►
Uh they have Snoopy options because of course they got a uh Snoopy lips
00:37:14
◼
►
Something called home modular, which is a basically a like
00:37:18
◼
►
overall like mission control kind of view of your home stuff.
00:37:23
◼
►
You can have nine camera views going or a bunch of buttons and all
00:37:27
◼
►
That's again it's for those home using it.
00:37:29
◼
►
'Cause clearly one of the things that they want this product to be is
00:37:33
◼
►
a home smart home controller.
00:37:35
◼
►
So if you lean into that, you can have it be configured like that.
00:37:40
◼
►
And then they have like weather, some widget focused view uh w faces, uh
00:37:45
◼
►
calendar views, Apple Watch style clocks, and a bunch of them look basically the
00:37:51
◼
►
same as the iPhone duo standby stuff.
00:37:55
◼
►
Some of the calendar views.
00:37:56
◼
►
It's also good at reusing their same stuff in different places.
00:38:00
◼
►
Uh they are obviously really selling.
00:38:02
◼
►
There's a lot of information that I don't understand in the press releases about
00:38:06
◼
►
the quality of the speaker system.
00:38:08
◼
►
Essentially this is a home pod, right?
00:38:09
◼
►
Like it's it's good for view for audio, supports handoff, multi room, all that
00:38:14
◼
►
kind of stuff.
00:38:15
◼
►
And the speakers the the primary speakers are in the display.
00:38:19
◼
►
Um, so you get it in both configurations, but there's some additional audio support
00:38:24
◼
►
in the base for the version that's got the base.
00:38:26
◼
►
You would expect that one's probably got the better audio, right?
00:38:29
◼
►
Like I would I would ass assume so.
00:38:31
◼
►
Just based on Well it's got more it's got that other hardware they said
00:38:35
◼
►
that that that makes it that that is channeling audio or enhancing it or
00:38:39
◼
►
I don't know we'll see.
00:38:41
◼
►
It features the center stage camera for obviously it's for FaceTime calls, but it's
00:38:44
◼
►
clearly how they're doing the facial recognition too.
00:38:46
◼
►
They even say that, right?
00:38:47
◼
►
So they're they're doing some form of facial recognition there.
00:38:50
◼
►
And uh I found this interesting.
00:38:52
◼
►
When you find a recipe in Safari, just tap the start cooking button to
00:38:55
◼
►
view a streamlined format that's easy to follow.
00:38:58
◼
►
What does what does that what does that mean?
00:39:00
◼
►
What start cooking button is there in Safari?
00:39:03
◼
►
Well, in this, there is right?
00:39:07
◼
►
Yeah, but how does that I mean you reckon it's doing a lot of
00:39:10
◼
►
Are you thinking Safari on a on a device?
00:39:12
◼
►
Because I'm Safari on the home view.
00:39:14
◼
►
There is Safari on HomeView, yeah.
00:39:16
◼
►
But I just so it's like yeah, you pull up a recipe and then
00:39:18
◼
►
there's probably it detects that there's a recipe and puts up a little button
00:39:21
◼
►
that says start cooking.
00:39:22
◼
►
Kind of like the reader view, right?
00:39:23
◼
►
Yeah, that's that's not hard.
00:39:25
◼
►
There's recipe detection is not news.
00:39:27
◼
►
So that's that's what's going on there.
00:39:28
◼
►
'Cause at first I was like, Oh, is this just the Apple News recipes
00:39:31
◼
►
thing right?
00:39:32
◼
►
When I first saw it, I was like, that's where that's coming from.
00:39:34
◼
►
But it's like no, it's just like all over the web, which is cool.
00:39:37
◼
►
I think it's great that they've got Safari on this thing.
00:39:39
◼
►
I could have s uh it would not have surprised me if Safari was
00:39:42
◼
►
not on this device.
00:39:43
◼
►
Like if it could if it could do basically like what the Apple Watch
00:39:46
◼
►
can do, right?
00:39:47
◼
►
Where it can render a web page, but you're not browsing the web.
00:39:50
◼
►
A lot I'll tell you, a lot of these devices, this is the classic
00:39:57
◼
►
um and some of the the some of the car interfaces are like this
00:40:00
◼
►
too, where it's like, well, we don't have apps for you.
00:40:04
◼
►
But the web.
00:40:05
◼
►
Wanna watch a YouTube video?
00:40:06
◼
►
Have you heard of youtube.com?
00:40:08
◼
►
Yeah, you go to go to youtube.com and you can watch it there.
00:40:11
◼
►
I it is or I did that on my was that on my Echo
00:40:16
◼
►
There was one of one of these home devices I've got.
00:40:18
◼
►
I did try that actually because there was a streaming service that it didn't
00:40:22
◼
►
And I could go to their website and press play and it would play
00:40:26
◼
►
video kind of.
00:40:27
◼
►
Um so it's a fallback.
00:40:28
◼
►
It's not ideal, but it's good that it's there.
00:40:31
◼
►
I wonder if you'll do presumably you can also do like um
00:40:37
◼
►
you know airdrop or sh or some other kind of sharing uh handoff thing
00:40:41
◼
►
that'll say, I I'm I've got this on my phone and now like take
00:40:44
◼
►
it over there, little little guy.
00:40:47
◼
►
So my kind of my feeling on this is like I'm this product seems
00:40:51
◼
►
to be kind of just what I was looking for.
00:40:54
◼
►
I I would love I would love the option for some more a little
00:40:58
◼
►
bit more third party stuff like widgets or but it wouldn't be a deal
00:41:01
◼
►
breaker for me.
00:41:03
◼
►
Um it feels very much like an Apple Watch which just lives on my
00:41:07
◼
►
kitchen counter, which I'm very happy with that's it's what I've been looking for.
00:41:12
◼
►
Um, you know, it it says you I love I I hope that the
00:41:16
◼
►
the photo stuff is really thought out well.
00:41:20
◼
►
Um like I would you know, they talk about collections, which I was pleased
00:41:23
◼
►
about or i shared albums or collections that you can choose to have as
00:41:27
◼
►
a kind of a photo gallery.
00:41:30
◼
►
but I wanna choose like show my favorites, which is not really something Apple
00:41:35
◼
►
supports anywhere else.
00:41:37
◼
►
Like in the in their widgets and stuff.
00:41:39
◼
►
It's it they they're like choose an album or we'll just show you stuff.
00:41:42
◼
►
Um and I would like to have a little bit of control over it,
00:41:45
◼
►
but obviously I can find that.
00:41:47
◼
►
Uh I I think it looks really fun.
00:41:50
◼
►
Um overall I I'm excited about this product because it is just at a
00:41:56
◼
►
basic level, it's been asking for, right?
00:41:58
◼
►
Yeah, I I appreciate the niche that this can fill and I haven't uh
00:42:03
◼
►
been satisfied.
00:42:04
◼
►
Like I said, this is Apple coming very, very late to a party, but
00:42:07
◼
►
the party isn't very good.
00:42:09
◼
►
Um maybe they can make it a better party with a product like this.
00:42:12
◼
►
And part of that is that those other devices aren't very good.
00:42:14
◼
►
And part of it is also that my stuff is primarily in the Apple's
00:42:17
◼
►
So that makes this a lot easier too.
00:42:19
◼
►
So yeah, I'm I'm excited to see this.
00:42:21
◼
►
I am curious how it works in that sort of more utilitarian home control
00:42:26
◼
►
on the wall kind of thing.
00:42:28
◼
►
But um but this is all part I mean Apple as a part of
00:42:31
◼
►
this and we'll get to the rest of it introduced a whole bunch of
00:42:34
◼
►
other home stuff.
00:42:36
◼
►
And so this is Apple kind of like recommitting to the home, the smart
00:42:41
◼
►
home in some ways.
00:42:43
◼
►
And um and so we'll see how this product fits into that too.
00:42:47
◼
►
But I think that's one of the things they're hoping is that one of
00:42:49
◼
►
the selling points of smart home stuff is always like, Oh, I gotta get
00:42:53
◼
►
on my phone and you know, like there's a complexity there that this, you
00:42:56
◼
►
know, stick one of these on the wall and it's your again, that's like
00:43:00
◼
►
in the olden days of home control systems, you always had to have like
00:43:04
◼
►
a control pad somewhere that you use to to do all this stuff.
00:43:08
◼
►
And so that's another role this thing can have.
00:43:10
◼
►
I did just do that classic thing where I said a thing and then
00:43:12
◼
►
checked it and my information is outdated.
00:43:15
◼
►
You can now choose something like favourites in the widgets for Applesville.
00:43:19
◼
►
You you used to not.
00:43:20
◼
►
It used to not really be much of a choice that you can make,
00:43:22
◼
►
but you can do that now.
00:43:23
◼
►
So that makes me even more uh excited about I will have that as
00:43:26
◼
►
a thing, right?
00:43:27
◼
►
'Cause me and Edina maintain like shared favorites uh like uh s like in
00:43:31
◼
►
shared albums and this kind of stuff, uh, in our shared photo library and
00:43:36
◼
►
I want that to be it basically just all pictures of our do of
00:43:40
◼
►
our daughter, and that's all I really want on on this display.
00:43:45
◼
►
Um and so that's gonna be fantastic.
00:43:48
◼
►
Uh I'm yeah, I'm looking forward to this and and I am also looking
00:43:51
◼
►
forward to what is undoubtedly gonna be a thousand edge cases for how this
00:43:56
◼
►
product works and doesn't work that we could just cannot know until we use
00:44:01
◼
►
Um it doesn't come out until November 13th, a month from now, which is
00:44:06
◼
►
it's interesting to announce it a month away.
00:44:09
◼
►
They're prime in the pump.
00:44:10
◼
►
Get it out before Christmas.
00:44:13
◼
►
And there's gonna be lots of hubbub about the iPhone duo next week, so
00:44:17
◼
►
That's true.
00:44:17
◼
►
And pre orders are available now, uh US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, and New
00:44:23
◼
►
And it's not available for sale in the European Union because of Syria AI.
00:44:28
◼
►
In the in the terms of you know, like the little uh what would
00:44:31
◼
►
you call it?
00:44:31
◼
►
Like the asterisks at the bottom, you know, you've got your kind of footnotes.
00:44:35
◼
►
Apple is working constructively with the EU in an attempt to find a path
00:44:39
◼
►
So that that's a change of tune though, right?
00:44:41
◼
►
Where it's like, screw those guys.
00:44:43
◼
►
It's like, Oh, our friends in the European Union, we're trying to work with
00:44:47
◼
►
Uh I thought that was funny.
00:44:49
◼
►
And congratulations To everybody at Apple, because as we know from our mint's reporting,
00:44:55
◼
►
this product's been kicking around for a couple years.
00:45:01
◼
►
And like people at Apple are like, oh, I'm gonna ship this thing.
00:45:06
◼
►
It's you can talk about it now, I guess, after two years if you
00:45:08
◼
►
remember it.
00:45:09
◼
►
You remember that product that you got at your house two years ago?
00:45:13
◼
►
Well, they f they finally shipped it 'cause the Apple intelligence this is the
00:45:17
◼
►
product that was the greatest victim of the failed Apple Intelligence rollout, right?
00:45:21
◼
►
Like this this product was supposed to be part of a big all products
00:45:25
◼
►
today, I think, but this one especially that was supposed to debut with the
00:45:29
◼
►
very good Siri that didn't happen.
00:45:32
◼
►
And so now here it is.
00:45:33
◼
►
So great, great, glad it's here.
00:45:35
◼
►
It is interesting though, right?
00:45:36
◼
►
Because it's obviously Siri AI is a part of this.
00:45:39
◼
►
It doesn't fearly like it needs it to me.
00:45:42
◼
►
Well, I think that there's a base of being able to have have a
00:45:47
◼
►
voice controlled device in in your kitchen or whatever that you have to have.
00:45:51
◼
►
And I think it shows you that Apple, I think, constructed this on that
00:45:55
◼
►
premise and then they did felt like they couldn't ship it.
00:45:58
◼
►
But to them, for whatever reason, they felt like if Siri was not better,
00:46:02
◼
►
it was not worth making.
00:46:03
◼
►
Which I think maybe that's the tell.
00:46:05
◼
►
I don't necessarily agree with that, but they obviously felt that way, and so
00:46:09
◼
►
here we are.
00:46:12
◼
►
This episode is brought to you by Notion.
00:46:14
◼
►
There are a lot of things that AI can replace, but teamwork is simply
00:46:17
◼
►
not one of them because nobody wants a future where every company is just
00:46:21
◼
►
one founder and a fleet of agents.
00:46:22
◼
►
I guess computers stuck in closets or something.
00:46:25
◼
►
It might be efficient, but work has always been about more than just the
00:46:29
◼
►
Nothing can replace that feeling of figuring something out with your team.
00:46:32
◼
►
Collaboration, cross kind of pollination of ideas.
00:46:36
◼
►
It's very important to me in the work that I do.
00:46:38
◼
►
And that's why the folks uh at Notion, they're building something so great, a
00:46:42
◼
►
product that I use every single day.
00:46:44
◼
►
I was spending time in Notion today where I was working on some stuff
00:46:47
◼
►
for the Cortex podcast and me and my assistant are working together and we're
00:46:51
◼
►
planning out guests and we have these boards and we're moving all the episodes
00:46:55
◼
►
around and I have my show notes in there.
00:46:57
◼
►
It's integrated with the tools that we're both using.
00:47:00
◼
►
It really helps us both work together on planning out the show.
00:47:04
◼
►
And it makes my life so much easier because I don't have to try
00:47:06
◼
►
and maintain these in my head.
00:47:08
◼
►
She can work on things, I can work on things, and then we can
00:47:10
◼
►
come together and have conversations about it.
00:47:12
◼
►
And Notion is like underpinning all of that for us.
00:47:15
◼
►
Notion is the AI workspace where your team's knowledge, projects, and agents all come
00:47:19
◼
►
together in one place.
00:47:20
◼
►
Teams using Notion move faster, cut friction and costs by consolidating tools and stay
00:47:26
◼
►
In Notion, your documents, meetings, projects, and more live all in one connected system,
00:47:31
◼
►
where AI has the context it needs to help you do your best work.
00:47:35
◼
►
It's seamlessly integrated, infinitely flexible, and beautifully easy to use.
00:47:39
◼
►
Because everything lives together, Notion has the context it needs to answer questions instantly,
00:47:43
◼
►
automate busy work and keep work moving.
00:47:46
◼
►
It's AI designed to strengthen teamwork, not replace it.
00:47:49
◼
►
Like a thing for me, you know, I get like transgressive podcasts and I
00:47:51
◼
►
put them into Notion, then I can ask questions like when did I talk
00:47:55
◼
►
about this or what were the episodes and where this was mentioned?
00:47:58
◼
►
And it can shut surface that to me way faster than I could find
00:48:01
◼
►
these things on my own.
00:48:02
◼
►

So we also got today the Apple Home Collection which is
00:48:34
◼
►
not a lineup of perfume or something, it feels to me, or like candles
00:48:38
◼
►
or something.
00:48:39
◼
►
Um Apple Home Collection, a new lineup of smart home accessories, including indoor and
00:48:43
◼
►
outdoor cameras, thermostats, temperature sensors, and a video doorbell and door lock designed in
00:48:49
◼
►
collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.
00:48:53
◼
►
Did we talk about this?
00:48:57
◼
►
These reports came out in our in our dark time between these two episodes.
00:49:01
◼
►
I I think so, 'cause Mark German reported that they were working with LG
00:49:04
◼
►
and then there's also Schneider Electric here for a couple of these.
00:49:07
◼
►
And the idea as German described it as these are second party, um, which
00:49:13
◼
►
is, yeah, this is Apple says up front, which is different when sometimes there's
00:49:19
◼
►
very clearly from Apple and then Apple doesn't talk about it and the vendor
00:49:22
◼
►
doesn't talk about it.
00:49:23
◼
►
That happens sometimes.
00:49:24
◼
►
This is like Apple saying, Yes, we collaborated with them.
00:49:27
◼
►
This is part of the Apple Home collection.
00:49:30
◼
►
We work with these manufacturers to make sure that these would be great and
00:49:33
◼
►
that they would have minimal aesthetic and premium materials, which is the big flag
00:49:37
◼
►
that says Apple was involved in the creation of this product.
00:49:40
◼
►
There's no logos on them.
00:49:41
◼
►
There's no LG logo.
00:49:42
◼
►
There's no Apple logo.
00:49:43
◼
►
They're just very simple, plain products, right?
00:49:47
◼
►
Yeah, they're ver it's very much this minimal minimalist kind of thing.
00:49:51
◼
►
So there are cameras from LG, there are there's a lock from LG and
00:49:57
◼
►
there are thermostats from LG and Schneider.
00:50:01
◼
►
Um and they're coming in December and onward.
00:50:06
◼
►
They didn't specify.
00:50:07
◼
►
Some of them will ship in December and some of them will be later.
00:50:10
◼
►
Um pretty much all US only as well, which I found interesting.
00:50:14
◼
►
Could be a wiring thing and and maybe they they just don't commit yet.
00:50:18
◼
►
I don't know.
00:50:19
◼
►
Yeah, it's a question.
00:50:20
◼
►
Or or this is what they could get out in time to launch it
00:50:23
◼
►
and then they'll they'll spread it out.
00:50:24
◼
►
Also, I would say, as somebody who's been paying some attention to this category,
00:50:28
◼
►
uh the the what's announced doesn't strike me as being particularly groundbreaking, I think
00:50:35
◼
►
I think that you could probably we'll see, right?
00:50:37
◼
►
It's possible that Apple has added a little secret sauce that makes these things
00:50:41
◼
►
better, but everything that was described, I think you can do with existing smart
00:50:44
◼
►
home products.
00:50:45
◼
►
Cause they're, oh, it instantly connects when you're with your iPhone.
00:50:49
◼
►
It's like, Well, products do that now unless they've got a new method of
00:50:52
◼
►
And it only needs the home app.
00:50:53
◼
►
And it's like, Well, some products really want you to use their app, but
00:50:56
◼
►
a lot of them only need the home app I think that is the
00:50:59
◼
►
key for me is the two things, which is the one tap setup with
00:51:02
◼
►
probably NFC, and that everything is a hundred percent managed in the home app.
00:51:07
◼
►
And and what I'll say for that is the the LG indoor camera is
00:51:11
◼
►
the only one that seems to be doing anything slightly novel, really, which is
00:51:16
◼
►
like it's a camera that flips you can flip up and down, right?
00:51:20
◼
►
So like you can flip up to look and flip down.
00:51:22
◼
►
And in fact, you don't need to if if you come home, you can
00:51:25
◼
►
set it so that if people who live in your house, so it's detecting
00:51:29
◼
►
with home kit, right?
00:51:30
◼
►
Come home, you can set it to automatically point down to the ground.
00:51:35
◼
►
So it can't see you.
00:51:36
◼
►
The reason I mentioned this is you can choose that in the home app
00:51:40
◼
►
where there are other cameras that do things like this, but you have to
00:51:43
◼
►
use the third part of the app to do that.
00:51:47
◼
►
that's nice at least.
00:51:48
◼
►
I don't know if that's secret sauce or if that's a new thing they're
00:51:51
◼
►
added that now everybody else is going to be able to use.
00:51:54
◼
►
But I which I think is fine.
00:51:55
◼
►
I think ultimately I think it would be better if these are not do
00:51:58
◼
►
able to do things.
00:51:59
◼
►
I'd like these to compete because they're high profile and they're at the Apple
00:52:03
◼
►
store and they're simple and they're elegant, et cetera, et cetera, and not because
00:52:07
◼
►
they have access to features that nobody else is going to ever get access
00:52:10
◼
►
But we'll have we'll have to watch that.
00:52:12
◼
►
But, you know, otherwise from the from the product perspective, yeah, it's video doorbell
00:52:17
◼
►
um that looks like a little kind of long oval blob that you stick
00:52:21
◼
►
on your door.
00:52:22
◼
►
It's uh there's a floodlight camera, so it's camera with two big lights so
00:52:26
◼
►
that you can have it do motion sensing and then blast the light on
00:52:28
◼
►
your I might get one of those for my um driveway.
00:52:31
◼
►
Um there is an there is an outdoor camera
00:52:38
◼
►
that is um that is doesn't have the floodlights or anything, but it's like
00:52:42
◼
►
an outdoor security camera.
00:52:43
◼
►
I've one of those from Akara.
00:52:46
◼
►
And there is an indoor camera that we talked about that kind of pivots
00:52:48
◼
►
up and down.
00:52:49
◼
►
So th that's your so Apple isn't making a video doorbell, it turns out.
00:52:52
◼
►
LG is making a video doorbell with Apple's design influence.
00:52:56
◼
►
And that and then Apple talks again about how it's all goes together and
00:53:00
◼
►
all connects together and all of that.
00:53:02
◼
►
But again, with the with Apple Home stuff, they already kinda do.
00:53:06
◼
►
I'm not sure there's anything special there.
00:53:08
◼
►
They're just using that as a thing to sell these.
00:53:11
◼
►
I like that someone will be able to go to the Apple store next
00:53:14
◼
►
year and they will be able to leave the store with a home view,
00:53:19
◼
►
a bunch of cameras, video doorbell, a thermostat.
00:53:23
◼
►
It's like you've got everything you need now and we can just give it
00:53:27
◼
►
And the Apple store will work to have somebody come and install it, which
00:53:29
◼
►
is another thing that they're doing with these products that is that because they're
00:53:32
◼
►
gonna they're gonna these products will be trained up for people.
00:53:36
◼
►
I think again, our audience is very savvy.
00:53:39
◼
►
I I hear a lot where people say, um, yeah, but there are other
00:53:43
◼
►
options that could do this.
00:53:44
◼
►
You don't need to go and spend the extra money or whatever on on
00:53:46
◼
►
what Apple and LG are selling you.
00:53:48
◼
►
And that there's s some truth in that, but it's I say about iPhone
00:53:52
◼
►
cases and other accessories.
00:53:54
◼
►
It's like it's so
00:53:56
◼
►
a lot of people are not gonna do the comparison shopping and they're not
00:54:00
◼
►
gonna do the research.
00:54:01
◼
►
And and having the imprint of Apple, even if it's
00:54:05
◼
►
part of Apple's home collection.
00:54:08
◼
►
It's at the Apple store.
00:54:09
◼
►
The Apple store people know about it.
00:54:11
◼
►
And it allows you to feel confident when you walk out with that video
00:54:16
◼
►
doorbell and that security camera and that home view that it's all gonna work
00:54:21
◼
►
In a way that, you know, we may say, Well, a savvy buyer will
00:54:24
◼
►
go and get the Accara camera and it works too, and it's maybe its
00:54:28
◼
►
specs are better and all that.
00:54:29
◼
►
It's like, yes, yes, yes, yes, that's true.
00:54:31
◼
►
But there is another market, and in fact if you want to popularize smart
00:54:35
◼
►
home stuff, you do kind of need to disarm and demystify a lot of
00:54:40
◼
►
it and make it like as simple as Apple's got a bunch of these
00:54:44
◼
►
super clean, easy to spot boxes with these products that are part of the
00:54:49
◼
►
And you just go into the Apple store and you get them and and
00:54:52
◼
►
you bring 'em home.
00:54:53
◼
►
That's there there's value in that, even though you're gonna you're gonna pay for
00:54:57
◼
►
it, the value is in not having to worry about it.
00:54:59
◼
►
And and and that's just gonna reach people who are just never gonna do
00:55:02
◼
►
the other thing, but they might.
00:55:04
◼
►
Like the idea of anybody who who has thought about a a s uh
00:55:07
◼
►
doorbell, smart doorbell, or or has one and is frustrated about like Amazon owning
00:55:14
◼
►
it or whatever, like saying, Well, this is an LG one, but it's
00:55:20
◼
►
And it's and it's all, you know, part of the secure private home kit
00:55:23
◼
►
system, uh, Apple home system, then they might like that.
00:55:27
◼
►
They might prefer that.
00:55:28
◼
►
So I did just have a quick look 'cause I I was wanted to
00:55:31
◼
►
check something about one of the products and I realized some of these products
00:55:35
◼
►
are going to be available in the UK next year.
00:55:37
◼
►
It's on the uh so the the the press releases are different in different
00:55:40
◼
►
places because it is a different set of products.
00:55:44
◼
►
They don't have everything.
00:55:45
◼
►
So it seems like in the UK it will only be the LG products.
00:55:51
◼
►
Um it's it's a little Well the the thermostat is a real issue outside
00:55:56
◼
►
the US, right?
00:55:57
◼
►
Like where there's a it's a different kind of product that you need.
00:56:00
◼
►
And that is like what I was talking about, the wiring stuff.
00:56:04
◼
►
So so there are two smart thermostats from LG and Schneider.
00:56:07
◼
►
Um it it says that it tries to explain why there are two and
00:56:11
◼
►
the answer is um something vague about different configurations.
00:56:15
◼
►
My guess is that they have some specific differences that probably affect things like
00:56:20
◼
►
what HVAC systems they work with.
00:56:23
◼
►
They they do all both of these thermostats support remote sensors and of course
00:56:27
◼
►
will work with not only their own remote sensors, but will work with like
00:56:32
◼
►
if you have a home pod mini, if you have a home view, it's
00:56:35
◼
►
got a temperature and humidity sensor in it too.
00:56:37
◼
►
So you can those will all talk and allow you to adjust intelligently adjust
00:56:42
◼
►
the thermostat in your home.
00:56:43
◼
►
So that's fun and good.
00:56:46
◼
►
And then um for me, the thing that I am most excited about is
00:56:51
◼
►
the LG Smart Deadbolt, which is the I don't know, maybe the third
00:56:58
◼
►
s UWB smart lock I've seen hit the market so far, where there was
00:57:02
◼
►
I I reviewed the first two.
00:57:04
◼
►
Accara had the first one, Schlage came out with theirs, and now there's gonna
00:57:09
◼
►
be this one.
00:57:11
◼
►
Um and we'll see how it differs, but it'll have you ultra wideband support.
00:57:16
◼
►
Which is the that is the gold standard.
00:57:18
◼
►
That is the thing that makes smartlocks relevant to me, um, for a broader
00:57:22
◼
►
Because instead of having to fiddle with it, uh it'll do NFC, you can
00:57:25
◼
►
tap your Apple Watch to it or whatever.
00:57:26
◼
►
But with UWB, if you've got ultra wideband capable devices, including most recent Apple
00:57:30
◼
►
Watches and iPhones.
00:57:31
◼
►
As you walk up to the door, your door unlocks.
00:57:33
◼
►
That that's it.
00:57:34
◼
►
That is what you want.
00:57:35
◼
►
That's the dream.
00:57:36
◼
►
And it does it.
00:57:37
◼
►
So that's great.
00:57:38
◼
►
Um, it does have a pin pad as well as NFC and a hidden
00:57:41
◼
►
backup key place where you can like slide it off and put it sticking
00:57:45
◼
►
Um and if it loses if it loses power, if it's and you need
00:57:49
◼
►
to get into your house, you can actually like plug a USB cable into
00:57:53
◼
►
your phone and into the bottom of the lock.
00:57:54
◼
►
And then the Schlager does that too and it'll power up and then unlock.
00:57:58
◼
►
So 'cause I know it's there was one of them where it was a
00:58:01
◼
►
battery and one of them where it did the battery like the little uh
00:58:04
◼
►
well the older ones it was like a nine volt battery slot and so
00:58:07
◼
►
you had to like ha keep a nine volt battery in your car or
00:58:09
◼
►
hidden under a rock or whatever.
00:58:11
◼
►
Um and now um the these you just have USB.
00:58:16
◼
►
I mean if you get a USB cable in your car and you've got
00:58:18
◼
►
a phone, you can power it up to get into the house.
00:58:22
◼
►
So um it it has that feature too.
00:58:24
◼
►
So that that's that's fun.
00:58:25
◼
►
And we don't know anything more about these and and they may just be
00:58:28
◼
►
pretty standard.
00:58:28
◼
►
But again, the point may not be that these are incredibly groundbreaking, more that
00:58:32
◼
►
like they're
00:58:34
◼
►
nice and they're available at the Apple store.
00:58:36
◼
►
Which is super helpful to people.
00:58:39
◼
►
And like, you know, to to even to me, that's like an element of
00:58:43
◼
►
like this is just an easy thing to do.
00:58:46
◼
►
Like I like the Apple Home app.
00:58:49
◼
►
I like the Apple Home app for my cameras.
00:58:50
◼
►
I hate that I also have to use the Accara app for some of
00:58:54
◼
►
Now they don't have a a product for me to replace my main Acaro
00:58:58
◼
►
product right now, which is the video doorbell.
00:59:00
◼
►
Acaro is the only company that makes a home kit
00:59:04
◼
►
wireless video doorbell, like a battery-powered one, which is fantastic.
00:59:08
◼
►
I hope Apple do this one day.
00:59:10
◼
►
I have my fingers crossed because the LG doorbell is called the wired doorbell.
00:59:14
◼
►
And it's like, Well if you were not planning a wireless one, why would
00:59:17
◼
►
you call it a wired one?
00:59:18
◼
►
You know what I mean?
00:59:20
◼
►
That's my hope.
00:59:21
◼
►
That is my hope.
00:59:21
◼
►
Uh 'cause I it's just helpful for the way that our kind of house
00:59:25
◼
►
We we can't have it wired.
00:59:27
◼
►
Um so we'll see.
00:59:28
◼
►
But yeah, I think this is just a good offering to have.
00:59:31
◼
►
I I will definitely be getting um one of the indoor cameras to replace
00:59:35
◼
►
a camera that I hate but is super helpful and is it'll be even
00:59:39
◼
►
better based on the fact that it does the moving thing.
00:59:42
◼
►
Um and I I have been wanting to get a floodlight camera.
00:59:44
◼
►
Um, 'cause we have a floodlight.
00:59:46
◼
►
I figure why not have a floodlight camera instead, uh, for our garden.
00:59:49
◼
►
So that that will be in my future.
00:59:51
◼
►
But Jason, huge news.
00:59:54
◼
►
The Apple T V and the home pod mini got an update as well
00:59:59
◼
►
They fin it finally happened.
01:00:00
◼
►
They the the other shoes dropped.
01:00:02
◼
►
So the Apple T V four K, yeah.
01:00:04
◼
►
I mean Siri AI uh obviously is what h held all these up.
01:00:08
◼
►
Um what does Serie AI look up on the Apple TV?
01:00:11
◼
►
They're like, you know, you can ask it questions, including contextual questions about what
01:00:14
◼
►
you're what you're
01:00:16
◼
►
brings up looks like it brings up like a almost like a lower third
01:00:19
◼
►
or something.
01:00:20
◼
►
They said it was a non intrusive uh response card that comes up that
01:00:24
◼
►
doesn't like cover up all your video and stuff, which is smart, uh 'cause
01:00:29
◼
►
it's Apple TV.
01:00:30
◼
►
Um but they're also gonna add it to older ones?
01:00:37
◼
►
this I need to understand a little bit more of.
01:00:39
◼
►
Apple is saying Siri AI is available as a beta on Apple TV four
01:00:44
◼
►
K second generational later.
01:00:46
◼
►
Now I don't know what that what Apple TV that is, honestly, because I'm
01:00:49
◼
►
so lost uh with the generations at this point.
01:00:52
◼
►
But I think we're up to like this is like gen four now, I
01:00:56
◼
►
Yeah, I think this is four.
01:00:57
◼
►
And so that's quite a lot of people's Apple TVs.
01:01:02
◼
►
I figure here it's because the Apple TV is two hundred and ninety-nine dollars
01:01:08
◼
►
now that they just need to find a way to to put Siri AI
01:01:14
◼
►
if they care about it on these other things.
01:01:16
◼
►
'Cause I think they know they're not going to sell a lot of these.
01:01:19
◼
►
And also Siri AI, I mean, in the end, it's probably just Siri in
01:01:24
◼
►
the cloud or maybe it's handing off again to an iPhone or something for
01:01:29
◼
►
personal context.
01:01:30
◼
►
So all they did is update the software to talk to an iPhone.
01:01:33
◼
►
If that is a feature, I'm not sure 100%.
01:01:35
◼
►
Um yeah, it that that's a little bit weird.
01:01:38
◼
►
Um, you know, the big updates are it's got microphones in it in the
01:01:43
◼
►
Apple TV box itself.
01:01:45
◼
►
In the Apple TV box.
01:01:46
◼
►
So if you don't have a home pod or a home view in your
01:01:52
◼
►
room where your Apple TV is, you can still shout out, hey Dingus, to
01:01:56
◼
►
it and it will listen to you, which is interesting.
01:02:00
◼
►
I figure for a lot of people this is going to be the absolute
01:02:03
◼
►
worst device.
01:02:05
◼
►
Because it's like you put them in a unit or whatever and close a
01:02:08
◼
►
Like with a home podge, you don't do that.
01:02:10
◼
►
They're out.
01:02:11
◼
►
Like they're by design, they're out.
01:02:13
◼
►
It's an interesting choice.
01:02:14
◼
►
It's yeah, it's an interesting choice.
01:02:16
◼
►
And then um also you've got uh a new remote, another new remote, and
01:02:22
◼
►
this one has has precision finding and a little speaker on it so it'll
01:02:27
◼
►
chirp at you and you can find it more precisely.
01:02:31
◼
►
So that's a new version of that remote, which is also available separately.
01:02:35
◼
►
Um, which is fine.
01:02:37
◼
►
I my Apple TV is yeah is behind a door, so it's not gonna
01:02:41
◼
►
listen to anything anyway.
01:02:43
◼
►
Um uh you know, new chip in it, it's gonna be much, you know,
01:02:46
◼
►
more responsive and all that stuff is nice.
01:02:48
◼
►
But the bottom line, and uh this is what I've already heard, it's this
01:02:51
◼
►
product was in those three hours ago as we were recording this.
01:02:59
◼
►
And like they were selling Apple TVs not very many months ago for what?
01:03:06
◼
►
At the base?
01:03:09
◼
►
Like it's and then they raise the price and now it's even higher.
01:03:12
◼
►
It's $299, a $300 TV box.
01:03:16
◼
►
And like, I'm sure that as Spect the Apple TV box.
01:03:21
◼
►
Makes sense at 299.
01:03:24
◼
►
But what doesn't make sense is who's buying a $299 T V box?
01:03:29
◼
►
I mean, the very, very high end of the market, I guess.
01:03:32
◼
►
But like it is frustrating that right now this is what you need to
01:03:37
◼
►
do to get into an Apple TV.
01:03:38
◼
►
It's very and I heard from all there's so many people who waited.
01:03:41
◼
►
Like I waited for a while and then I finally just went ahead and
01:03:44
◼
►
bought an Apple TV six months ago or whatever.
01:03:47
◼
►
And I I'm glad I did, cause like Come on.
01:03:51
◼
►
This is uh just uh yeah.
01:03:53
◼
►
Yeah, I my Apple T V here at the studio is whatever generation it
01:03:58
◼
►
is, which means it's it doesn't get twenty seven, I think.
01:04:02
◼
►
Um like there there is a cutoff and I I'm in that.
01:04:05
◼
►
And like my thoughts like, Oh, okay, well when the new one comes out,
01:04:08
◼
►
I'll replace the one at home and shuffle it down.
01:04:11
◼
►
And I'm like, I I don't think I want to do that for three
01:04:13
◼
►
Like I just I'll live with it uh until it becomes a problem for
01:04:17
◼
►
me and and I'm willing to push that out f quite far into the
01:04:21
◼
►
distance, honestly.
01:04:22
◼
►
I mean again, I'm impressed by the specs on this thing, A nineteen right.
01:04:28
◼
►
on the other hand This feels like a high-end model.
01:04:33
◼
►
Not an only model.
01:04:34
◼
►
It's the same price as the home view.
01:04:37
◼
►
Which is a little screen and everything, right?
01:04:40
◼
►
Screen and speakers and stuff on the home view.
01:04:45
◼
►
I don't know.
01:04:46
◼
►
I don't what they're doing here.
01:04:47
◼
►
Like I appreciate that they're they're building a home strategy, but the Apple TV
01:04:51
◼
►
strategy still is baffling to me.
01:04:53
◼
►
I don't know what they're I don't know what they're doing there.
01:04:56
◼
►
Yeah, it's not great.
01:04:57
◼
►
Again, not that this product is pr it's probably good.
01:04:59
◼
►
It is a few Apple TV's so great.
01:05:02
◼
►
And the way it's yeah, I mean it's um it's my primary interface for
01:05:05
◼
►
That's great.
01:05:06
◼
►
And and the way it's spec'd two ninety nine almost makes sense.
01:05:10
◼
►
It doesn't but nothing makes sense anymore.
01:05:11
◼
►
But almost, but like for it to be the only one is so weird.
01:05:17
◼
►
And I all I can hope is that they are having conversations about what
01:05:22
◼
►
the lighter Apple TV looks like.
01:05:25
◼
►
Because there should be a lighter Apple TV product that you could buy.
01:05:29
◼
►
Like please, something.
01:05:33
◼
►
Also, I'm gonna I'm gonna bring out one of my usual Apple TV hardware
01:05:36
◼
►
complaints now, which is I'm so frustrated because it's the FaceTime on the Apple
01:05:42
◼
►
TV is so good.
01:05:43
◼
►
I'm so frustrated that they still have not made uh an accessory that is
01:05:48
◼
►
a like a camera that you can stick on top of your TV to
01:05:51
◼
►
do FaceTime.
01:05:52
◼
►
Uh I mean you can use an iPhone for it, but like it's super
01:05:55
◼
►
inconvenient to do that.
01:05:57
◼
►
How about a soundbar?
01:06:00
◼
►
'Cause the sound bar has to be uncovered, right?
01:06:03
◼
►
You have to be able to have sense chev lines.
01:06:05
◼
►
But camera and microphones in it.
01:06:06
◼
►
Camera, microphones,
01:06:09
◼
►
make it a proper product, you know?
01:06:13
◼
►
And charge that.
01:06:14
◼
►
Charge two ninety nine for that.
01:06:21
◼
►
or i the pricing of the home view just makes this very awkward.
01:06:25
◼
►
'Cause it it does two ninety nine for the home view is a surprise
01:06:29
◼
►
I would have expected more.
01:06:31
◼
►
It is such a Rorschach test for people.
01:06:34
◼
►
Because the home view ever I I don't know.
01:06:37
◼
►
So again, it's only been three hours.
01:06:38
◼
►
The home view for $2.99, all I've been hearing is, oh, thank goodness, that's
01:06:43
◼
►
a that's a reasonable price for that product.
01:06:45
◼
►
And the Apple TV for $2.99 is like, what are they doing?
01:06:48
◼
►
And it's the same price.
01:06:50
◼
►
But I'm sorry, like that thing is like a speaker with a screen and
01:06:55
◼
►
And it moves.
01:06:59
◼
►
Yeah, it's not a tabletop robot, but you can you can move around and
01:07:02
◼
►
And then there's Apple TV, which is just a a a block that you
01:07:04
◼
►
plug into your TV, also two ninety nine.
01:07:06
◼
►
And I I it is a mysterious David Schab in our Discord was pointing
01:07:10
◼
►
out like the Apple TV specs now are verging on like MacBook Neo specs.
01:07:17
◼
►
I'm sure like I'm sure it's good.
01:07:19
◼
►
I'm sure it's good.
01:07:20
◼
►
But again, why are those the specs?
01:07:23
◼
►
And and why is that the product you're selling?
01:07:26
◼
►
Again, not that they you couldn't sell this product, but
01:07:30
◼
►
W but w why is that it?
01:07:32
◼
►
This is an I is this an issue with like the system on a
01:07:37
◼
►
chip kind of idea of like if you need it to support something, it's
01:07:43
◼
►
gotta have an A nineteen in it.
01:07:46
◼
►
If it's gonna have an A nineteen in it, it has a minimum amount
01:07:51
◼
►
I m so my my gut feeling here is that they have issues with
01:07:54
◼
►
what with chip production, which everybody does.
01:07:57
◼
►
And when they make an Apple T.
01:07:58
◼
►
V, because they don't do Apple TV versions very often, what they need to
01:08:02
◼
►
do is commit to having chip availability for years.
01:08:05
◼
►
And so I wonder if what's going on here is they kind of got
01:08:09
◼
►
stuck in this moment where they like they don't really have enough availability of
01:08:13
◼
►
their older chips.
01:08:14
◼
►
And the newer chips cost.
01:08:16
◼
►
And so the Apple TV gets kind of like stuck in between.
01:08:19
◼
►
I think that may be what's going on here, but like they gotta find
01:08:22
◼
►
a way out of this.
01:08:23
◼
►
They need to they need to find a way to have a more reasonably
01:08:27
◼
►
spec'd low end product.
01:08:28
◼
►
Because the the truth is, Apple TV, yes, the the lower spec'd Apple TVs
01:08:34
◼
►
They're a little slower and more.
01:08:36
◼
►
But in the bottom line is you can move around the interface just fine,
01:08:39
◼
►
and then you play a video and the videos play just fine.
01:08:42
◼
►
And like that's ninety-five percent of what they are.
01:08:47
◼
►
So ninety-nine percent of what they are.
01:08:49
◼
►
So I I I I think we just gotta put that on the on
01:08:52
◼
►
the to-do list for John Turnus is have a have a lower end TV
01:08:57
◼
►
solution in addition to this product.
01:08:59
◼
►
But I do wonder if it it I I don't know enough about this
01:09:03
◼
►
and a lot of it is shrouded in mystery, but my my gut feeling
01:09:06
◼
►
is a lot of this is about chip availability.
01:09:08
◼
►
And that they have the chips that they've got and with an Apple T
01:09:12
◼
►
V you're making you're you're got enough A nineteen's for years with this.
01:09:17
◼
►
The home view has an A eighteen in it, by the way.
01:09:20
◼
►
Just just as a thing.
01:09:21
◼
►
But there is a home view, that's why it's that's how it can be
01:09:25
◼
►
two ninety nine like the Apple TV, is that they it's got a screen,
01:09:28
◼
►
but it also has a slightly lesser processor.
01:09:30
◼
►
So again, from a different bin of the bins that this is the downside
01:09:33
◼
►
of the Apple Silicon thing, I suppose, is is this, which is they have
01:09:38
◼
►
to manage their chip resources, right?
01:09:40
◼
►
It's a challenge for them.
01:09:42
◼
►
And I think sometimes it does lead to weird distortions of uh product decisions
01:09:47
◼
►
because of their trip availability.
01:09:49
◼
►
That's what I think.
01:09:51
◼
►
Home Pub Mini Two.
01:09:52
◼
►
Uh I'm gonna get to the the most interesting thing last.
01:09:57
◼
►
Can we talk about product names?
01:09:58
◼
►
That's the least interesting but I just want to point out that it's Apple
01:10:01
◼
►
T V four K fourth generation.
01:10:02
◼
►
Yeah with the HomePod Mini Two.
01:10:05
◼
►
Yeah, I don't know.
01:10:06
◼
►
Like some some numbers are in the names, some are not in the names.
01:10:09
◼
►
I don't know what it means.
01:10:10
◼
►
This doesn't make sense.
01:10:11
◼
►
Um and and it they come in colors.
01:10:13
◼
►
There's a pink, you can get pinks, pinkies blue, white, and midnight.
01:10:18
◼
►
They have a new feature called sound glow.
01:10:21
◼
►
So this is the ongoing home pod question, which is what do we do
01:10:24
◼
►
with that thing on the top that they had from the beginning, which is
01:10:26
◼
►
like this kind of blobby thing that like it shows you're listening except you
01:10:30
◼
►
can't see it because it's on the top.
01:10:32
◼
►
And with SoundGlow, what they're doing is it's visualizer so it moves to the
01:10:37
◼
►
So it's it's it's not fake, it's moving to the music and it's based
01:10:41
◼
►
on the the album art, which you can't see on it, but if you
01:10:44
◼
►
know what the album art is, ooh, this is blue, it'll be blue, uh
01:10:48
◼
►
for of the song that's currently playing.
01:10:50
◼
►
So that's going on.
01:10:50
◼
►
They got a little visualizer on the top.
01:10:52
◼
►
It obviously um is uh i is more modern in a bunch of ways.
01:10:58
◼
►
It's it's still got the what it had before which is I think thread
01:11:01
◼
►
radio and uh and uh humidity sensor and a temperature sensor so it'll it'll
01:11:05
◼
►
work in the Apple home in that way.
01:11:07
◼
►
Jason, do you remember when they shipped the AirPods Max update?
01:11:12
◼
►
And for a period of time you couldn't plug a cable in.
01:11:16
◼
►
Do you remember?
01:11:17
◼
►
And then all of a sudden we were like, hey, oh cables.
01:11:20
◼
►
The cable's back.
01:11:21
◼
►
The HomePod Mini Two supports Siri AI.
01:11:27
◼
►
But but later.
01:11:29
◼
►
This is the this is the moment we were all uh we in our
01:11:32
◼
►
little text thread we were looking at the press releases together and Stephen Hackett
01:11:36
◼
►
and I simultaneously were were typing, wait a second, the home pod mini two
01:11:43
◼
►
has Siri AI support via a future software update.
01:11:48
◼
►
And like, I don't know, like it's been a busy time for Apple Software
01:11:54
◼
►
Group and I've and and they had to ship Siri AI and they had
01:11:58
◼
►
that big setback.
01:11:59
◼
►
Set back two years ago, and we know the backstory here that these products
01:12:02
◼
►
have kind of been waiting for the software to catch up.
01:12:05
◼
►
And I feel like this is the little tiny place that peeks through where
01:12:11
◼
►
it is revealed the thing that Mark Erman's been reporting all along, which is
01:12:16
◼
►
all these home products were let down by the software.
01:12:19
◼
►
They were let down.
01:12:20
◼
►
The people who built the hardware built this hardware and then it sat because
01:12:24
◼
►
the software wasn't ready and here's the little clue about that backstory is one
01:12:30
◼
►
of the banner features of the HomePod Mini Two is that like these other
01:12:33
◼
►
products, it supports Siri AI.
01:12:35
◼
►
Except it doesn't yet that it's a coupon in the box to get Siri
01:12:40
◼
►
AI later at a later time.
01:12:42
◼
►
And it's like, what are they doing?
01:12:44
◼
►
There's no indication.
01:12:46
◼
►
It's just future.
01:12:50
◼
►
Like I don't year is twenty forty five.
01:12:54
◼
►
A software update is released.
01:12:55
◼
►
How does HomeView and Apple TV support Siri AI, but HomePod Mini doesn't?
01:13:02
◼
►
Like what is what could be different?
01:13:03
◼
►
But what could be different?
01:13:05
◼
►
Not enough time.
01:13:06
◼
►
Didn't I too busy?
01:13:08
◼
►
I don't understand.
01:13:09
◼
►
Like had a lunch.
01:13:11
◼
►
Obviously I don't understand software development enough.
01:13:14
◼
►
'Cause isn't it all just doing the same thing ultimately?
01:13:16
◼
►
Like it all just calls to a server and gets a something I don't
01:13:20
◼
►
Obviously it's not, right?
01:13:22
◼
►
Obviously there's something different or this wouldn't be happening.
01:13:25
◼
►
But I don't I don't understand.
01:13:27
◼
►
It it just and again, like I mean it is what it is, but
01:13:31
◼
►
you look at that and you say
01:13:34
◼
►
What are you doing releasing a product to the world where one of its
01:13:39
◼
►
banner features is, but not yet.
01:13:42
◼
►
And unlike this isn't the only one, the pencil support on the iPhone Duo
01:13:48
◼
►
is one of those, right?
01:13:49
◼
►
Where it's like, this is gonna be great.
01:13:51
◼
►
Um and we may know the backstory there that they were trying something else.
01:13:55
◼
►
I'm not convinced that that's actually the reason.
01:13:57
◼
►
I I I'm not convinced that the the iPhone pencil that they killed and
01:14:02
◼
►
they're just going with the USB-C pencil.
01:14:03
◼
►
I'm not I'm not convinced those are any different from a technical standpoint, really,
01:14:08
◼
►
in terms of the receiving.
01:14:09
◼
►
I think that's a feature that they kicked to the curb because they didn't
01:14:12
◼
►
get it right.
01:14:13
◼
►
Um, but like these are signs.
01:14:15
◼
►
Hey, the software is there.
01:14:17
◼
►
It they the software story this fall has been pretty good.
01:14:20
◼
►
Siri AI is pretty good.
01:14:23
◼
►
But boy, like it's still not great.
01:14:26
◼
►
Still there's still issues with the software, let's just say that if they ship.
01:14:31
◼
►
'Cause like obviously Apple's like we gotta ship this product.
01:14:33
◼
►
It's gotta go out with the rest of them.
01:14:35
◼
►
And from a software side, somebody's like, We just can't get it.
01:14:38
◼
►
We can't commit to this being ready for launch.
01:14:40
◼
►
So we'll roll it into the next version.
01:14:42
◼
►
And they're like all right, I guess we'll go with it.
01:14:44
◼
►
I mean you're not gonna not give the home pod mini 2, its launch
01:14:47
◼
►
with all these other products.
01:14:48
◼
►
They all kind of do need to go together, but woof, it just is
01:14:52
◼
►
a it's just a bad sign.
01:14:54
◼
►
It's a red it this is a red flag, right?
01:14:56
◼
►
Of like something is wrong here.
01:14:59
◼
►
Yeah, it's some
01:15:02
◼
►
It's a very and like and I I agree with you, right?
01:15:04
◼
►
Like and I understand, like there are features in products very often that are
01:15:08
◼
►
like it's it's gonna come later, right?
01:15:11
◼
►
But this one feels pretty core to the product experience, right?
01:15:15
◼
►
Um like it's actually actually let me rephrase that.
01:15:18
◼
►
It is the entire product experience.
01:15:20
◼
►
It's the entire product experience.
01:15:21
◼
►
It's like if they were like, We're gonna we're gonna ship this iPhone, but
01:15:24
◼
►
iOS comes later.
01:15:27
◼
►
I was gonna so what what I was gonna say is you're gonna love
01:15:30
◼
►
the camera on the iPhone eighteen pro, which will be enabled by a future
01:15:34
◼
►
software update.
01:15:36
◼
►
The touch screen.
01:15:37
◼
►
Sorry, camera doesn't work right now.
01:15:40
◼
►
But you enjoy the enjoy the rest of it and the game we'll we'll
01:15:43
◼
►
update that game.
01:15:44
◼
►
I I I ag I agree with I feel bad for the hardware team.
01:15:50
◼
►
I feel bad for them.
01:15:51
◼
►
This whole thing, this whole nightmare.
01:15:54
◼
►
And again, these this is the legacy of decisions made years ago.
01:15:57
◼
►
So it may be that they're all in a better place right now.
01:15:59
◼
►
It may be that they're cleaning up the it is.
01:16:02
◼
►
Th like what they have shipped, I I think has been pretty good.
01:16:06
◼
►
I think it may be that they're just picking up the pieces.
01:16:08
◼
►
They're cleaning up all the garbage, all the damage of the last couple of
01:16:11
◼
►
years, and this is a thing that they just couldn't get and they decided
01:16:14
◼
►
to move ahead with it.
01:16:15
◼
►
But again, putting on I'm putting on John Turnus's to do list, like, if
01:16:22
◼
►
this is not handled, this needs to be handled because something is wrong.
01:16:25
◼
►
And all everything we talk about with like AI stuff and the pace of
01:16:29
◼
►
AI, th this is the thing look.
01:16:35
◼
►
I've never really been concerned about the future of Apple since it came back,
01:16:39
◼
►
and I'm not really now.
01:16:40
◼
►
I think they've got so much money and so much brand equity and all
01:16:44
◼
►
But still, you can't be complacent.
01:16:46
◼
►
What I would say is, as a hardware company, I Apple is unparalleled in
01:16:54
◼
►
They are the best.
01:16:55
◼
►
They are executing.
01:16:56
◼
►
I mean, look at that.
01:16:57
◼
►
iPhone 2 is another example of it.
01:16:59
◼
►
Like amazing hardware.
01:17:03
◼
►
Just they are at the top of their game.
01:17:05
◼
►
They build their own chips.
01:17:07
◼
►
The chips are great.
01:17:08
◼
►
Top of their game.
01:17:10
◼
►
The software, they are playing a different game from anybody else because they've got
01:17:14
◼
►
all these different devices and all these different OS variants that they're doing.
01:17:18
◼
►
And they're very clever in how they reuse parts and all of that.
01:17:22
◼
►
But that all said, like I'm worried about their software game.
01:17:27
◼
►
It was already shaky, and the the pace of change in software especially with
01:17:34
◼
►
the AI stuff, is breathtaking.
01:17:37
◼
►
And their pace was plotting.
01:17:40
◼
►
So that's my that's like my number one agenda item for for our friend.
01:17:46
◼
►
Is is how do we revamp and that you know, and via JT, Craig
01:17:51
◼
►
Federigi, of like how do we change how Apple approaches software and I now
01:17:55
◼
►
the advantage is they they'll be able to take advantage of AI tools to
01:17:59
◼
►
help them accelerate.
01:18:00
◼
►
And that's great.
01:18:01
◼
►
But like and I know that it's we're we're looking at things that that
01:18:05
◼
►
are kind of a year delayed from where it is right now.
01:18:09
◼
►
But like still feels like that's there's a house on fire over there that
01:18:12
◼
►
that you just gotta deal with it.
01:18:14
◼
►
But like the benef mm, not benefit.
01:18:17
◼
►
So I agree with you uh about obviously like the the AI pays, but
01:18:21
◼
►
I feel like at least with operating system stuff
01:18:26
◼
►
They're much and much the same as their competitors in the case that sometimes
01:18:30
◼
►
things just don't finished when they ship, right?
01:18:33
◼
►
Like it there's a there's been a lot of conversations about the Google books
01:18:38
◼
►
in the last week.
01:18:39
◼
►
So Google released a bunch of products and I was listening to the Verge
01:18:42
◼
►
Cast and they were like, There are just places of this operating system that
01:18:46
◼
►
just don't feel like they're done.
01:18:48
◼
►
And like Marquez Brownley's review, he's like, There's screen rotate toggle in control center.
01:18:55
◼
►
It doesn't do that.
01:18:57
◼
►
Like it it doesn't so it's like, you know, like these things
01:19:02
◼
►
they happen.
01:19:03
◼
►
And it's not an excuse, but it's a because I ag the reason I
01:19:06
◼
►
mentioned is I agree with you that they uh from a hardware perspective, they
01:19:09
◼
►
are unparalleled.
01:19:09
◼
►
Like n I don't believe anyone comes near to them and they have a
01:19:12
◼
►
lot of software foibles, but so do their competitors, so maybe they kinda get
01:19:16
◼
►
away with it.
01:19:17
◼
►
But software is changing And are they equipped to handle that world?
01:19:24
◼
►
That's the one we need to to wait and see and find out on.
01:19:27
◼
►
But these are the products today.
01:19:30
◼
►
It's uh interesting uh offering overall today.
01:19:34
◼
►
It's very obviously home focused.
01:19:36
◼
►
That was the the design of the event.
01:19:38
◼
►
Um and from like a s a s an overall suite of products with
01:19:42
◼
►
some odd areas.
01:19:45
◼
►
You know, the the the Syria and home pod, the pricing of the Apple
01:19:49
◼
►
Otherwise, I think a pretty solid
01:19:52
◼
►
offering today.
01:19:54
◼
►
My di biggest disappointment of well, okay.
01:19:57
◼
►
Disappointed by the Apple TV price.
01:19:59
◼
►
I'm home pod doesn't ship with with Siri AI.
01:20:02
◼
►
But I think they missed an opportunity to do a video at least explaining
01:20:07
◼
►
the Apple home philosophy and why you want this stuff.
01:20:10
◼
►
And I know they'll have ads and stuff.
01:20:12
◼
►
And they do they're like um what I'm calling the Apple product manager influencer
01:20:20
◼
►
marketing that they do on the Instagram page where they have like a very
01:20:23
◼
►
mini stripped down presentation.
01:20:26
◼
►
But it wasn't super in depth, but I did do one today.
01:20:29
◼
►
Yeah I I just I would like to see something on front and center
01:20:32
◼
►
on Apple dot com that says here's what our vision is for the home.
01:20:36
◼
►
And that didn't happen.
01:20:37
◼
►
So that that I don't know.
01:20:39
◼
►
I'm a little concerned about that because I do think they need to kinda
01:20:41
◼
►
explain their strategy.
01:20:42
◼
►
But maybe they'll piecemeal.
01:20:44
◼
►
Um but uh yeah.
01:20:46
◼
►
Anyway, it's very interesting and a day that, you know, I'm sure everybody at
01:20:49
◼
►
Apple wished it happened early last year.
01:20:52
◼
►
But here we are.
01:20:53
◼
►
We got it October thirteenth twenty twenty six, we uh we did it, everybody.
01:20:58
◼
►
I would say I agree with what you're saying.
01:21:00
◼
►
At least they've at least they gave this some kind of event, right?
01:21:05
◼
►
It wasn't just press releases or more.
01:21:09
◼
►
They did some they did yeah, I mean they did media work and they
01:21:11
◼
►
did a little uh influencer event in New York City.
01:21:13
◼
►
So pre briefing too, which is very interesting, right?
01:21:16
◼
►
They they they at least gave it a push.
01:21:22
◼
►
But they didn't as big a push as I think maybe they could have.
01:21:25
◼
►
I would have liked to have seen the home view in the iPhone keynote,
01:21:28
◼
►
I know it would have made that keynote really long, but I think that
01:21:32
◼
►
would have been a nice thing to put to put into there 'cause I
01:21:35
◼
►
think it would have been fun to show the duo and the home view
01:21:39
◼
►
like in one video.
01:21:40
◼
►
Like I feel like that would be very interesting.
01:21:42
◼
►
And I also think it ties into the intelligent personal hub idea pretty well.
01:21:47
◼
►
Like 'cause this this little device.
01:21:49
◼
►
So again, even if they would have had John Turner say that phrase again
01:21:53
◼
►
and point at this thing, right?
01:21:55
◼
►
Like in a video today, w would have been a nice thing to add
01:21:59
◼
►
to the overall package.
01:22:02
◼
►
Jason, let's take a moment uh to talk about design in California because it's
01:22:07
◼
►
We have uh our first new series since the show launched coming this week.
01:22:12
◼
►
Uh it is The Origin of the iPod, which we're very excited about.
01:22:17
◼
►
It's just talking about the personal hub.
01:22:19
◼
►
We've been thinking a lot about hubs
01:22:22
◼
►
and personal digital hubs, personal hubs.
01:22:25
◼
►
Otherwise because we and we talk about it.
01:22:27
◼
►
So like if you know we've been referencing the p intelligent personal hub idea
01:22:32
◼
►
because John Turner spoke about it and we'd all thought about it as the
01:22:35
◼
►
digital hub, which goes back to the iPod.
01:22:37
◼
►
In this series, uh which starts this Wednesday, there is an episode which is
01:22:42
◼
►
focused on the digital hub.
01:22:44
◼
►
Um, there are five episodes in our series on the origins of the iPod.
01:22:49
◼
►
So we're gonna tell the story of how Apple goes from having no music
01:22:53
◼
►
strategy to building the iPod in a year, essentially.
01:22:57
◼
►
We talk about digital hub.
01:22:59
◼
►
It's two years, but it's year one is oh, digital music is a thing
01:23:04
◼
►
and iTunes comes out of that.
01:23:06
◼
►
And that's two thousand.
01:23:08
◼
►
And then in two thousand one they go from we sh perhaps we should
01:23:11
◼
►
build a music player early in two thousand one or late in two thousand
01:23:15
◼
►
to announcing it twenty five years ago this week and shipping it twenty five
01:23:19
◼
►
years ago next month.
01:23:21
◼
►
Uh in like less than a year from conception to shipping.
01:23:25
◼
►
Um and yeah, so we tell that story in five episodes.
01:23:28
◼
►
Five episodes.
01:23:29
◼
►
Where episodes one episode one is going to be out this week to everybody
01:23:33
◼
►
and all five episodes out this week to our members.
01:23:38
◼
►
So uh yeah, it's a great story.
01:23:39
◼
►
They it it goes from the origins of the MP three itself, which is
01:23:44
◼
►
an interesting story.
01:23:44
◼
►
It's a really interesting story, all the way through to Apple announcing and shipping
01:23:52
◼
►
the iPod in very weird times.
01:23:55
◼
►
There are some I don't want to spoil it.
01:23:57
◼
►
There are some twists and turns to this story.
01:24:00
◼
►
Uh which you may not consider until we get to them.
01:24:06
◼
►
personal story as well in this in this series.
01:24:10
◼
►
Did I shed a tear while recording this?
01:24:12
◼
►
Indeed, yes, I did.
01:24:15
◼
►
I love this series so much and I cannot wait for people to hear
01:24:19
◼
►
Um you can go to relay.fm slash designed and check it out if you
01:24:23
◼
►
haven't yet.
01:24:24
◼
►
Maybe you felt like a story about macOS wasn't for you, and maybe the
01:24:28
◼
►
iPod is for you, and I hope that you'll listen to this.
01:24:31
◼
►
If you haven't listened to Designing California, and then you'll say actually this is
01:24:35
◼
►
really fun and you'll go listen to everything we've done.
01:24:37
◼
►
Uh there'll be YouTube versions as there are uh always.
01:24:40
◼
►
Um and speaking of YouTube, I wanna try every time we would do a
01:24:44
◼
►
series, I want I'm I'm trying to think of like fun ways to celebrate
01:24:48
◼
►
these series 'cause they don't happen that often really.
01:24:50
◼
►
It's like one a month, most likely.
01:24:53
◼
►
And so this Wednesday at eleven AM US Eastern time on the Designing California
01:24:58
◼
►
YouTube channel.
01:24:59
◼
►
There'll be a link in the show notes.
01:25:01
◼
►
I am planning to do a live stream where I am hoping to mod
01:25:05
◼
►
an iPod with an interesting upgrade kit which should add wireless charging and Bluetooth
01:25:12
◼
►
We'll see how it goes.
01:25:14
◼
►
Like I I have s bought this kit.
01:25:16
◼
►
The instructions are dubious at best.
01:25:19
◼
►
So that will be something you can tune in on.
01:25:21
◼
►
It'll be fun.
01:25:22
◼
►
And you can watch later on as well.
01:25:23
◼
►
And uh we'll we will talk a lot about the iPod uh during this
01:25:27
◼
►
live stream if you wanna come and hang out.
01:25:29
◼
►
But the most important thing is to go and check out design in California
01:25:32
◼
►
at relay.fm slash designed and then hey, if you listen to the first episode
01:25:36
◼
►
and you're like, Oh man, I want all of it, you can sign up
01:25:39
◼
►
to become a member and you will in fact get all of it.
01:25:42
◼
►
Uh so that is available to you if you would like.
01:25:47
◼
►
It's rumor roundup time, Jason Snell.
01:25:51
◼
►
What we didn't get today is any news on Macs.
01:25:54
◼
►
So there's still these Macs out there in the ether.
01:25:58
◼
►
According to Mark German, Apple is getting ready to host another event this month
01:26:03
◼
►
on October 27th, focused on Macs and the iPad Mini.
01:26:07
◼
►
This is where we will see both 14 and 16-inch OLED MacBook Pros with
01:26:12
◼
►
touch screens and a dynamic island.
01:26:14
◼
►
Mark also recently reported that this laptop will be significantly lighter than the current
01:26:20
◼
►
A long time ago he had said significantly thinner, which he has said is
01:26:24
◼
►
not happening.
01:26:24
◼
►
It's more they will not be significantly thinner.
01:26:27
◼
►
Maybe it was like I don't know what, but lighter, not thinner.
01:26:30
◼
►
And a new iPad meaning with an OLED display.
01:26:33
◼
►
Uh Mark is hearing this will be considerably more expensive than the current model,
01:26:37
◼
►
which is currently priced at five ninety nine, along with M six powered iMac
01:26:42
◼
►
and entry level fourteen inch MacBook Pro.
01:26:46
◼
►
So that is like a few days after the duo comes out.
01:26:51
◼
►
We're in for one this time.
01:26:52
◼
►
Yeah, it's a lot.
01:26:54
◼
►
So I wonder how they'll roll this out.
01:26:56
◼
►
Again, I'm I'm kinda who knows?
01:26:58
◼
►
This uh German says they're gonna be like an influencer touch the laptop thing,
01:27:03
◼
►
touch the iPod iPad at uh in LA.
01:27:07
◼
►
In LA, yeah.
01:27:08
◼
►
Focused around creatives, he said.
01:27:10
◼
►
So maybe it's like yeah, you you're a music producer and you go to
01:27:14
◼
►
screen for your computer.
01:27:15
◼
►
I've been to those in New York before where it's like, here's a music
01:27:19
◼
►
producer, here's a video editor, uh, we're gonna show how they use this to
01:27:24
◼
►
do their creative work and it's a whole like uh little dog and pony
01:27:28
◼
►
show that they do about how you can use these things.
01:27:31
◼
►
I once had a conversation with someone who'd been on one of those demos.
01:27:35
◼
►
Like they would they were the person doing the demo all day and they
01:27:38
◼
►
described it as as like hellish.
01:27:41
◼
►
Just doing the same demo over and over and over again for like eight
01:27:45
◼
►
hours for like two days or something.
01:27:47
◼
►
It seems pretty intense, but yes, that's what they do.
01:27:50
◼
►
And then you go there and they do the whole thing and etc, etcetera,
01:27:53
◼
►
But so yeah, I am really excited.
01:27:56
◼
►
I don't believe I want well, okay.
01:27:59
◼
►
I obviously want the new MacBook Pro with a touch screen OLED.
01:28:03
◼
►
I it's not the product for me, but I wanna really wanna try one.
01:28:06
◼
►
Uh but man, that is gonna be expensive, right?
01:28:09
◼
►
Like that is gonna be yeah.
01:28:10
◼
►
Oh boy, that is gonna be something.
01:28:13
◼
►
But I'm excited about it.
01:28:14
◼
►
Just to be clear, um what we're expecting is um that these are gonna
01:28:20
◼
►
be the models with the M five Pro and Max chips.
01:28:24
◼
►
I don't be an M six MacBook Pro OLED because I think the Or
01:28:33
◼
►
Well I I just I think that the M six is out there and
01:28:37
◼
►
they could put it, but like that's for the cheaper version.
01:28:40
◼
►
I don't the cheaper version's gonna get OLED touch screen.
01:28:42
◼
►
I think that cheaper version is gonna stick around as a base model.
01:28:45
◼
►
Maybe they put an M six in it.
01:28:47
◼
►
Um, I don't know.
01:28:49
◼
►
But I don't think it'll be in the OLED version.
01:28:51
◼
►
That's my prediction anyway, is I I think I think that they're gonna it
01:28:54
◼
►
it would make it too expensive.
01:28:55
◼
►
And they want that thing to be more affordable.
01:28:57
◼
►
So that's my my my guess anyway.
01:28:59
◼
►
The conversation is we're not getting the M six Pro and Max at all.
01:29:03
◼
►
Yeah, exactly.
01:29:04
◼
►
M five Pro and Max, according to Mark Erman.
01:29:06
◼
►
They're not doing the M six Pro and Max, so they're gonna do these
01:29:09
◼
►
now and then next year, into next year, they'll have M seven Pro and
01:29:12
◼
►
Max to put in it.
01:29:14
◼
►
But that's a couple of weeks away.
01:29:15
◼
►
Like really is just apparently two weeks away, so maybe next week we'll find
01:29:20
◼
►
out that the week after that we're doing this.
01:29:22
◼
►
Yeah, I guess your notes your notes say IMAC and that entry level model
01:29:27
◼
►
Maybe, but again it'll be the entry-level model.
01:29:29
◼
►
So I mean the M6 is out.
01:29:31
◼
►
You you can stick it in all the places where you currently got an
01:29:33
◼
►
M5 and move on.
01:29:34
◼
►
But I the OLED is gonna be pricey and expensive, so it's not gonna
01:29:38
◼
►
be it's gonna be higher skewed than the the base model.
01:29:43
◼
►
Let's finish out with some Oscop great questions.
01:29:47
◼
►
Tim says, what do you make of Apple using the vintage six color logo
01:29:51
◼
►
and the Welcome Home event invitation?
01:29:53
◼
►
Um it's cute.
01:29:55
◼
►
Walms my heart.
01:29:56
◼
►
Uh Apple has been using the six color logo and the six color rainbow
01:30:02
◼
►
in lots of places over the last few years.
01:30:04
◼
►
There was a period where it was just not thought of and now it's
01:30:07
◼
►
sort of pleasantly retro.
01:30:09
◼
►
So yeah, it warm it warmed my heart.
01:30:11
◼
►
But you know, the rainbow stage in Apple Park is in those six colors.
01:30:15
◼
►
Um, they show up.
01:30:16
◼
►
You you can buy Apple Rainbow shirts at the at the Apple store at
01:30:20
◼
►
Like they're not running away from it in a way that they were.
01:30:22
◼
►
I think back in the you know, when Steve Jobs came back, he was
01:30:26
◼
►
like, get rid of that thing.
01:30:27
◼
►
Um and uh but now I think it's it's okay.
01:30:31
◼
►
It's it's it's pleasantly retro in a way that they embrace.
01:30:35
◼
►
It's little like how I was watching football um
01:30:40
◼
►
yesterday and the New England Patriots played a game in their throwbacks, which are
01:30:45
◼
►
like the normal New England Patriots that they won all their Super Bowls in,
01:30:49
◼
►
they're like dark blue uniforms with silver helmets with this uh patr stylized Patriot
01:30:54
◼
►
on the side that is often referred to as Flying Elvis.
01:30:57
◼
►
You see it, you get it.
01:31:00
◼
►
But they were the throwbacks.
01:31:01
◼
►
So the throwbacks, it's red, not blue.
01:31:04
◼
►
And the it's a white helmet with uh this cartoon Patriot playing football on
01:31:10
◼
►
it that is called Pat Patriot.
01:31:13
◼
►
And it's you know When they replaced the Pat Patriot uniform, I was like,
01:31:18
◼
►
Yeah, modern uniform.
01:31:19
◼
►
And I still feel like the Patriots uniform's good, it's modern.
01:31:22
◼
►
They won all those Super Bowls in it.
01:31:23
◼
►
It's got the legacy.
01:31:25
◼
►
Then they boy those throwbacks and I'm like, Oh, look.
01:31:27
◼
►
I mean, again, I I I wouldn't have welcomed I was glad that they
01:31:31
◼
►
were gone, but now when they bring them back once or twice a year,
01:31:34
◼
►
I think it's adorable.
01:31:35
◼
►
That's the six colors logo.
01:31:36
◼
►
Yeah, it's gone from being banished to being classic.
01:31:41
◼
►
Or like Pepsi does this sometimes with their throwbacks where they where they put
01:31:45
◼
►
like sugar instead of corn syrup in their sodas and they pull out the
01:31:49
◼
►
old Mountain Dew logo and stuff.
01:31:51
◼
►
Like it it there is a point at which after being in the bin
01:31:56
◼
►
for a while, the low old logos and stuff become classic and retro and
01:31:59
◼
►
charming and they're allowed back out into circulation.
01:32:02
◼
►
That's where Apple is with the six-color Apple Rainbow now.
01:32:07
◼
►
I feel like I I love the six-color logo.
01:32:10
◼
►
I feel like if Apple used it as their logo, it would not hit
01:32:13
◼
►
me as hard as when we see it in these environments, right?
01:32:15
◼
►
We're like, Oh yeah.
01:32:17
◼
►
You know how logos work.
01:32:18
◼
►
Like you need logos in various ways of like if you say our logo
01:32:21
◼
►
is a rainbow, you're committing to putting a rainbow on every product you make.
01:32:25
◼
►
And like it's not practical in an etched aluminum laptop case to have a
01:32:30
◼
►
rainbow there.
01:32:31
◼
►
You could do it, but like
01:32:33
◼
►
they want more flexibility.
01:32:35
◼
►
So I wouldn't be surprised if the brand guidelines actually specify everything about the
01:32:38
◼
►
Apple Rainbow and say, you know, you got to get permission.
01:32:41
◼
►
This is very specific, only used in specific ways as a throwback variant and
01:32:45
◼
►
all of that.
01:32:46
◼
►
Like I'm sure they've got all of that going on.
01:32:48
◼
►
But um but you know the Apple logo is the Apple logo and the
01:32:52
◼
►
rainbow is a a recognized way you can use it in s for special
01:32:56
◼
►
occasions, I guess I would say.
01:32:58
◼
►
I saw this a little while ago, um on social media.
01:33:01
◼
►
I think it was on Threads.
01:33:03
◼
►
Uh I'll see if I can try and find it uh for the show
01:33:06
◼
►
And it was some uh nineteen eighty seven identity guidelines that Apple made and
01:33:14
◼
►
it was like a a PD a PDF.
01:33:16
◼
►
Well, it's not a PDF now.
01:33:18
◼
►
Like now it was a like a brochure then.
01:33:22
◼
►
And they referenced specifically the colors for the logo because six color printing is
01:33:29
◼
►
very expensive, so they had a cheap version and and a pricey version for
01:33:35
◼
►
and how the colours would differ depending on what you had access to.
01:33:38
◼
►
I mean they also just it's very funny this document because it's all like
01:33:41
◼
►
yes, no, yeah, like different ways that you should show it.
01:33:44
◼
►
I'll drop that up in the show notes.
01:33:45
◼
►
But anyway, yes.
01:33:46
◼
►
Six colour printing is very expensive.
01:33:49
◼
►
Like it it would make every bag that they made way more expensive to
01:33:53
◼
►
produce because six colours rather than just one colour.
01:33:58
◼
►
So that that scales up in a horrific way, right?
01:34:01
◼
►
The price of Printing the box, everything would just get more expensive when she
01:34:05
◼
►
goes to six distinct colours.
01:34:06
◼
►
Um, but yeah, and also just difficult to color match everything all the time.
01:34:11
◼
►
Last question today, as we've run along, Aaron wants to know what is Jason's
01:34:16
◼
►
opinion of Goodreads adding half and quarter stars to Goodreads Goodreads for years, the
01:34:21
◼
►
book uh site, uh limited you to star ratings of one to five.
01:34:26
◼
►
And they finally decided decided we don't care anymore.
01:34:31
◼
►
You could do half so you could do quarter stars.
01:34:33
◼
►
We're half blades, is what they said basically.
01:34:36
◼
►
I what's my opinion?
01:34:40
◼
►
I think I think rating art in a quantitative way is silly.
01:34:47
◼
►
I do put Goodreads ratings up, but they're mostly reminders to myself and hints
01:34:52
◼
►
to other people about how generous I felt about the book.
01:34:55
◼
►
I don't think you can measure books by halves and quarters,
01:34:59
◼
►
even more than by f whole stars.
01:35:03
◼
►
However, you know, if you listen if the if rule one of building a
01:35:08
◼
►
website is listening to your users.
01:35:10
◼
►
You can't go more than a couple of reviews before you see a Goodreads
01:35:15
◼
►
review that says,
01:35:18
◼
►
you know, four stars.
01:35:19
◼
►
And then in the text of the review it says 3.5 stars.
01:35:23
◼
►
Round it up to four for good rates.
01:35:25
◼
►
So like the users hate that there aren't half stars, there aren't fractional stars.
01:35:30
◼
►
So on that level, like I'm glad they've given that power to people.
01:35:35
◼
►
I think it's silly, but people want it and so you should give it
01:35:38
◼
►
We had a long argument at Macworld back in the day about whether we
01:35:44
◼
►
should even allow half ratings for Macworld reviews.
01:35:49
◼
►
And we ended up doing it, but like the argument was that we didn't
01:35:54
◼
►
know if there were if you do halves, then you you've got like ten
01:35:58
◼
►
Are there ten points of gradation across products?
01:36:02
◼
►
It i is is it meaningful to have three and a half versus four
01:36:06
◼
►
versus four and a half?
01:36:08
◼
►
Maybe 10 is at least quantifiable.
01:36:11
◼
►
Before I worked at Macworld, uh, and when I got to Macworld, they actually
01:36:15
◼
►
had two rating systems, which, folks,
01:36:18
◼
►
bananas, what what are they doing?
01:36:20
◼
►
And the two rating systems were a star rating
01:36:23
◼
►
which was no halves.
01:36:26
◼
►
Okay, solid.
01:36:28
◼
►
And a 10-point scale, two a tenths of a decimal.
01:36:34
◼
►
So you would get these star ratings that were like three stars, five point
01:36:39
◼
►
And I remember having that conversation with the lab director when we went over
01:36:42
◼
►
to Macworld where we're like, are there a hundred points of gradation in a
01:36:46
◼
►
product review?
01:36:47
◼
►
Because ten with a tenths place, you're it's literally just zero to a hundred
01:36:53
◼
►
And you see this, I think does I mean you you see this on
01:36:57
◼
►
sites to this day.
01:36:58
◼
►
Like, I think it's too much.
01:37:00
◼
►
I I don't think I think it implies, let me put it this way.
01:37:03
◼
►
I think it implies a precision that doesn't exist.
01:37:06
◼
►
I don't like it.
01:37:08
◼
►
Goodreads, you know, it's even more squishy because it's just, did you like this
01:37:14
◼
►
So I'm against it personally, but I think I'm for them adding it just
01:37:18
◼
►
because I admire them being holding their ground for so long and then being
01:37:21
◼
►
like, Fine, we don't care, whatever.
01:37:24
◼
►
Leave us alone.
01:37:24
◼
►
Because the fact is their user base wants to give three and a half
01:37:27
◼
►
stars to a book.
01:37:28
◼
►
So who are who who am I to stand in their way?
01:37:31
◼
►
Um and at least it'll removes those really annoying um prefaces to Goodreads.
01:37:36
◼
►
Worst thing about Goodreads reviews is that I have opinions about Goodreads Review.
01:37:42
◼
►
Aaron, you open the Pandora's box here, folks.
01:37:45
◼
►
Um is the the the so many of them because these are like amateur
01:37:50
◼
►
book reviewers.
01:37:52
◼
►
They're just explaining their processes.
01:37:54
◼
►
Hang on a second, hang on a second.
01:37:55
◼
►
You can say that now, right?
01:37:56
◼
►
Could you like uh, I review for the Wall Street Journal.
01:38:00
◼
►
Well yeah, but also like I'm a professional product reviewer and have been for
01:38:04
◼
►
a long time.
01:38:04
◼
►
But I'm just saying you can say everybody else is an amateur book reviewer
01:38:08
◼
►
I guess so, but the the point is that that when when you've got
01:38:11
◼
►
it when you've got uh just regular people writing book reviews, sometimes what you
01:38:14
◼
►
get is a lot of the classic things that as an editor you would
01:38:17
◼
►
cut, which is it's all throat clearing.
01:38:19
◼
►
It's like, uh, I get this three and a half out of five four
01:38:23
◼
►
and uh when I got this book I was really excited to read it
01:38:25
◼
►
and you're like, get to the review of the book.
01:38:28
◼
►
Anyway, I have issues with Goodreads uh book reviews, but um in the end,
01:38:33
◼
►
if if it shuts 'em up to give 'em quarter stars, just shut 'em
01:38:36
◼
►
up, give 'em what they want and move on, but I think it's uh
01:38:40
◼
►
it's also ridiculous, but probably good.
01:38:42
◼
►
It's better to do this than to move it to a ten point scale,
01:38:46
◼
►
Like ten stars.
01:38:47
◼
►
'Cause at least if you're taking five enough stars and stars in the sky
01:38:51
◼
►
for that many stars.
01:38:52
◼
►
It just means that like people that want to still do one, two, three,
01:38:55
◼
►
four, five can still do that.
01:38:57
◼
►
Like you are never gonna half star.
01:38:59
◼
►
Well yeah, I just I just rated a book the other day and I
01:39:01
◼
►
gave it three stars.
01:39:02
◼
►
And I try I clicked a little bit wrong and it was like, Do
01:39:05
◼
►
you mean three and a quarter stars?
01:39:06
◼
►
And I was like I do not.
01:39:08
◼
►
Thank you for asking.
01:39:10
◼
►
I I want a setting that says just do the full stars.
01:39:13
◼
►
But you know, the fact is there are moments where I'm like, is this
01:39:15
◼
►
a three-star or a four-star?
01:39:17
◼
►
And I will probably in a moment of weakness give it three and a
01:39:19
◼
►
That's fine.
01:39:20
◼
►
Let people do what they want.
01:39:22
◼
►
It doesn't matter.
