114: So Far, So OK

00:00:00   in the show notes someone has deleted a very important note that no read as [TS]

00:00:04   follows that john has such an awful lot like homework because I'm assuming it [TS]

00:00:10   wasn't Marco that put in all sorts of information about photos for 10 not [TS]

00:00:15   homework looks like it looks an awful lot like home or the bare minimum of [TS]

00:00:20   getting anything written down about a topic and it's like oh my goodness and I [TS]

00:00:24   didn't write this down there being nothing they're just be like a bullet [TS]

00:00:26   point that said photos I'm just saying I don't like the look at home yet [TS]

00:00:30   ok see this is not homework this is simply research that was done in John's [TS]

00:00:33   home that was in preparation for some future research I went to web pages and [TS]

00:00:39   copy and paste it no more research than fight getting the feedback emails we [TS]

00:00:44   getting copying and pasting information from India and then you complain that [TS]

00:00:47   you didn't give me a link to that tweet so do homework then when you can't find [TS]

00:00:52   a link to it we don't want your own but now i cant anyway but it'll be fine [TS]

00:00:56   well now that I've publicly shamed you and then inevitably shamed myself we [TS]

00:01:04   should probably do some follow-up so let's start with hit Tea Party I hope I [TS]

00:01:09   said that right I went back and forth like five emails trying to get this name [TS]

00:01:13   right people he wrote us about the Thailand crisis that caused the hard [TS]

00:01:21   drive problems that is very hard drives are manufactured there and show ID [TS]

00:01:25   attributed to a tsunami with a bunch of warlords around at like tsunami or [TS]

00:01:30   something anyway it was not a tsunami it was a severe flood in 2011 that caused [TS]

00:01:35   this problem with hard drives the tsunami was in 2004 and different part [TS]

00:01:40   time and apparently the Seagate hard drive factories were not in the flooding [TS]

00:01:44   area so why with their quality go down this is in relation to the Backblaze [TS]

00:01:49   blog post about last show [TS]

00:01:52   about how they bought a bunch of seagate hard drives around the time of the flood [TS]

00:01:55   and like ninety percent of them are dead and four years maybe more pressure on [TS]

00:02:00   the one remaining working factory maybe parts they got real bad like all sorts [TS]

00:02:04   of I can imagine that it's you know we can say that see if battery is almost [TS]

00:02:12   but not affected by the severe flooding maybe not like directly as a mirror had [TS]

00:02:15   water in them but clearly something related to the flood went wrong to cause [TS]

00:02:20   there that batch of drives to be terrible like me but thousands of drives [TS]

00:02:23   in ninety percent dead and four years is not a good deal so anyway we got the [TS]

00:02:26   natural disaster wrong and apparently they're packed with an underwater but [TS]

00:02:30   they were clearly they also might have just sucked I supposed to like you saw [TS]

00:02:35   those numbers like those are outside yet it's pretty the margin of error that you [TS]

00:02:39   know especially for backless for them to call it a leak they put us under [TS]

00:02:43   manufacturers and you know there's this fluctuations but that was ridiculous [TS]

00:02:47   unrelated quasi related note do you guys have spare drives for your Synology is [TS]

00:02:52   just in case one dies I don't I did that for a while but now instead of doing [TS]

00:02:58   that now I just converted it to one of their raid mostly keeps hot spares [TS]

00:03:02   anyway like I used to have spared like sitting outside of it and everyone is [TS]

00:03:06   now this is this is less good than that but it's not that big of a difference so [TS]

00:03:12   using the the Synology hybrid raid or whatever it's called SHR think it is I [TS]

00:03:17   have used that in the past it's a little slow from you so now I have one now I [TS]

00:03:21   have my whole crazy I asked her if you talked about fully on the show but now [TS]

00:03:26   my entire Synology is one giant I skazhi volume with whatever read variant of [TS]

00:03:33   RAID five or six that that has two discs that are able to fail so I have that [TS]

00:03:37   plus one hot spare the bride-to-be swept into that if needed and then I have you [TS]

00:03:43   know just all all one giant ice caused you value that accessed by network [TS]

00:03:47   shares on this Mac Mini that I have that's doing last year right now and so [TS]

00:03:50   that way the Mac Mini service the role of being my standalone live streaming [TS]

00:03:55   box so I don't have to worry about software updates breaking it which is a [TS]

00:03:59   problem with audio stuff [TS]

00:04:00   meanwhile it also runs back plz on it to back up the entire contents of that I [TS]

00:04:06   suppose you volume as a network share and also served over the network to [TS]

00:04:12   other computers I'm an interesting so it's complicated it for my Synology I [TS]

00:04:17   have to physical volumes that are my Time Machine backups and whatever rate [TS]

00:04:22   is completely not redundant Time Machine and I don't really care [TS]

00:04:26   oh yeah I have that too sorry I forgot yeah I do have to just stand there that [TS]

00:04:29   are in raid 0 that are just four times right and then I have the other six that [TS]

00:04:33   are using psychology whatever it is rated a coupon it's a hybrid but I feel [TS]

00:04:37   like that's wrong that's what it is it's ok insolvent thinking about one of these [TS]

00:04:42   days when I have a little bit of extra money for Amazon I should just get [TS]

00:04:47   another like three terabyte drive instead of sitting there waiting in case [TS]

00:04:51   something in case something goes wrong but then the other side of me thinks [TS]

00:04:55   well I could overnight myself one if I really got desperate one failed so [TS]

00:05:00   what's the big deal was carries you guys have any spares what's your approach on [TS]

00:05:03   this John I use mine in a weird way I do have a separate time machine volume like [TS]

00:05:08   both of you because basically a one time machine volume I haven't actually set up [TS]

00:05:13   as RAID one because it's the one part of the system that I wanted a little bit of [TS]

00:05:18   redundancy on and it really care too much about speed so it's not raid 0 raid [TS]

00:05:22   1 raid 194 time machine and I back up both of my computers over the network to [TS]

00:05:28   that time machine by the way someone asked on Twitter like they showed me [TS]

00:05:31   that backup set up an eighth and they said is this dealing with suspicion I [TS]

00:05:34   came up or something [TS]

00:05:36   one thing I realize now that they were missing is that this may be a mountain [TS]

00:05:40   lion or maybe using SMB the added ability to add multiple targets for Time [TS]

00:05:44   Machine so you get a disc to your time machine thing and it it will back up [TS]

00:05:48   also to that desk so it won't like backup have to want to have to do a full [TS]

00:05:53   backup to one target in the fall back into her new place we alternate and I do [TS]

00:05:57   that one of my Time Machine backups to a local disk sitting on the desk with my [TS]

00:06:00   perspective computers and no time machine backup is [TS]

00:06:04   over the network to the Synology America bought grade 1 volume and they both in [TS]

00:06:09   there and then the rest of the disks I don't do anything with the radar had [TS]

00:06:14   arranged differently the beginning but now I don't do anything with the raid [TS]

00:06:16   because basically you know rate is not a backup strategy rate is both of you [TS]

00:06:20   there to make sure your downtime as small as possible but I don't care if my [TS]

00:06:24   downtime is a couple days we've know we could ever there's nothing essential on [TS]

00:06:27   there is just you know media and stuff like that mostly so I have a bunch of [TS]

00:06:33   different volumes that are complete copies of each other like my media [TS]

00:06:38   volume iMedia thats in under three terabytes so I think I have like three [TS]

00:06:41   or four copies of my media one of them is linked with like the college thing to [TS]

00:06:46   the other 11 of them a copy with Carbon Copy Cloner on my Mac to the other [TS]

00:06:50   volume at different intervals and it's it's very strange but basically what I [TS]

00:06:55   want to have as like look if one of these things go bad I can just yank it [TS]

00:06:59   out [TS]

00:07:00   order new hard drive from Amazon doesn't matter what size it is because they were [TS]

00:07:03   in a raid said anything it's just like a new hard drive right and why do that I [TS]

00:07:07   start to more copies of all my data like basically I'm taking advantage of the [TS]

00:07:10   fact that the Synology holds tremendous amount of data and I don't have that [TS]

00:07:14   much data I'm using it as a series of volumes and so far the drives have been [TS]

00:07:20   fine I'm not really worried about them feeling you do get you guys get that [TS]

00:07:23   monthly discount report nixon email you and say here's the health report for [TS]

00:07:29   disabled tell me tell you how many bad sectors and how many errors or whatever [TS]

00:07:33   all zeros every month on these things I'm not particularly worried about them [TS]

00:07:36   lots of redundant data on there like basically have the same set of data [TS]

00:07:41   copied multiple times when multiple plain old single disk volume that's [TS]

00:07:46   really not bad it's not the answer I expected but I can get behind that and I [TS]

00:07:50   have sparing disc still like so they need to put something else in like it [TS]

00:07:53   its it seem like a strange set up to me and I tried different regions but in the [TS]

00:07:57   end it's like look i dont i dont care about downtown just care about [TS]

00:08:01   you know the data being safe and i know now if i download something it rip [TS]

00:08:05   something to put in my media drive cable slowly migrated to the other copies of [TS]

00:08:09   me the address the time and I'll have you know three copies of it and neither [TS]

00:08:14   of you guys have online backup fierce analogy stuff I do I'm I mounted my [TS]

00:08:19   wife's computer and then I use CrashPlan which can backup network drives [TS]

00:08:23   death the one thing I wish back plz did and and they've they've said a number of [TS]

00:08:28   times that you know they just kind of a cost issue because NASCAR can be huge [TS]

00:08:33   but I really hope they've they've always said that they're about in the future I [TS]

00:08:37   really hope they do network drive because that's like that the one [TS]

00:08:41   downside of it and i like it so much [TS]

00:08:44   without that I could with this crazy set up with not a nice cozy on a Mac Mini to [TS]

00:08:50   have it be officially and have it be backed up that way but I've tried [TS]

00:08:55   CrashPlan running on the Synology have an actual client that runs on there I've [TS]

00:09:00   tried crash man running on the automatic that's backing up over the network and [TS]

00:09:04   whatever the case whatever the reason is it doesn't work for me and and there's [TS]

00:09:09   some kind of issue that the CrashPlan client is still written in Java and [TS]

00:09:14   there's some kind of issue where you start hitting weird memory limit if you [TS]

00:09:18   have a large number of files in the file size I think I think you have a lot of [TS]

00:09:23   very large number of files [TS]

00:09:26   the CrashPlan client can start crapping out doing weird things and airing out or [TS]

00:09:30   being just ridiculously slow to upload up more attract them and I i hit those [TS]

00:09:35   problems every time I've tried CrashPlan whether it's on on this knowledge itself [TS]

00:09:39   on a Mac and I've tried there are so many like alternative configuration file [TS]

00:09:43   even blood when I found that I thought worked and worked for like a week and [TS]

00:09:47   then stopped working I've had nothing but trouble trying to backup a very [TS]

00:09:51   large number of files to crash land that was on my strategy is just analogy to [TS]

00:09:55   his big files so it's like movie rips and like you know they even a time [TS]

00:10:00   machine thing its disk images it's not all the little individual Time Machine [TS]

00:10:04   files can you do to machine over network makes you just came in just a really big [TS]

00:10:08   files so it's not a million files it is a small number of multi-gigabit files I [TS]

00:10:13   think that's why I'm able to get away with you know moving on we should talk [TS]

00:10:21   about the new MacBook battery the life it has under load I'm not sure if this [TS]

00:10:26   is John market that added this we were wondering couple shows back this new [TS]

00:10:32   MacBook three skinny it got a very tiny little battery in there it's got a very [TS]

00:10:35   low power CPU and the battery life we weren't sure about the hardships like [TS]

00:10:43   well maybe get the battery life they say be used lightly but what is it like if [TS]

00:10:46   you use it heavily if you really stressed this thing by you know just [TS]

00:10:50   using Xcode constantly are using Photoshop her final cut or something [TS]

00:10:54   like to be really really use this does that does the battery life [TS]

00:10:58   dropped dramatically because like the CPU is like oh I'm going to be very [TS]

00:11:01   conservative and sip power but the ratings are like 1.1 K R 2013 budget [TS]

00:11:06   turbos up like 2.9 like what do you leave intermodal the time is it just [TS]

00:11:10   came to destroy your battery and marco was musing that around and just seeing [TS]

00:11:16   battery life tests at like maybe a heavy and light load he would like to see [TS]

00:11:19   delta's like how much worse is the battery life on this laptop in heavy [TS]

00:11:26   usage vs light usage and he was getting them maybe the new MacBook would not be [TS]

00:11:31   that great in that area because maybe gets all its power savings are being [TS]

00:11:34   really careful but you really stress it it just comes more like a regular CPU so [TS]

00:11:37   I tried a farm and tech did that test with a bunch of laptops and as it turns [TS]

00:11:43   out the new MacBook 11 porch [TS]

00:11:47   twelve-inch whatever you want to call it think has the best performance of any of [TS]

00:11:51   the laptops they tested when comparing its high load versus loaded retain 62.2% [TS]

00:11:57   of its battery life and the next one US 59 and it goes down with the 11 inch [TS]

00:12:03   2011 MacBook Air being the worst it gets like thirty eight percent 30.3 percent [TS]

00:12:09   of its low low battery life so put a link to this and the show notes it's a [TS]

00:12:14   pleasant surprise that the newest notebook not only has the lowest power [TS]

00:12:19   CPU and the times battery but also takes the smallest him use it at Lodi Marcos [TS]

00:12:23   blockbuster I think it was about how all these are not great at all them right [TS]

00:12:29   has great battery life you just surf the web [TS]

00:12:31   refuse any of them hard forget about all day you're down into the for five hours [TS]

00:12:34   yet that was the most depressing part for me because you know Apple AAPL up to [TS]

00:12:39   use this phrase all-day battery life now and of course what what is considered [TS]

00:12:43   all day varies by what device they're talking about and also by how you're [TS]

00:12:48   using it and so all-day battery life on the watch is from all the reviews I've [TS]

00:12:53   heard so far [TS]

00:12:54   sufficient to actually last through the day for most people unless you're really [TS]

00:12:59   using it a lot having the screen on a lot then a lot of sense said Oh we had [TS]

00:13:04   to charge it midway through the day or whatever but you it seemed like the most [TS]

00:13:08   part that's fairly accurate if you use it lightly the way Apple has made it [TS]

00:13:12   possible to use today the iPhone and iPad are both similarly advertise I [TS]

00:13:17   think it actually use the phrase all-day battery life on the iPhone iPad and you [TS]

00:13:24   know similarly advertised of you all day and the iPad that actually seems pretty [TS]

00:13:28   accurate seems like it gets up in about eight to 10 hours of battery life 2012 [TS]

00:13:33   doing most of the time the iPhone is more very to denote seems to depend more [TS]

00:13:40   on what you're doing and and things like you know radio reception how how how [TS]

00:13:45   hard the cell radio is working with your using GPS or not things like that the [TS]

00:13:50   laptops you know Apple advertises them as having general I think they're the [TS]

00:13:54   lowest clinton make now is like seven hours and 15 inches something like that [TS]

00:13:58   and and their claims are pretty accurate if you compare them to other third-party [TS]

00:14:04   light web browsing type tasks and that's in the enter one here they they should [TS]

00:14:10   be business and thing that like their numbers line up pretty well with apples [TS]

00:14:13   for a light web browsing [TS]

00:14:15   workload the problem though is and so you know like web browsing workload [TS]

00:14:18   right now you can get it if you if you consider the old MacBook Air the non [TS]

00:14:24   retina MacBook Air you can get 12 hours 39 but if you if you only wanna retin a [TS]

00:14:30   machine which I was saying like you know at this point but in most buyers who are [TS]

00:14:33   considering buying a new laptop today the smart move obvious adding is to go [TS]

00:14:37   right now I'd like I wouldn't consider any other machine today so you know so [TS]

00:14:45   for that year [TS]

00:14:45   your maxing out at eight hours of light usage and if you using it and that's [TS]

00:14:52   only that's like not even the 1550 nature maxing out more like six to seven [TS]

00:14:56   of light usage and then the heavy usage which there have you not even that heavy [TS]

00:15:02   it's like it's like it's still web browsing but I think it's like loading [TS]

00:15:07   pages more frequently and also downloading a large file and playing a [TS]

00:15:11   movie in the back route I wouldn't call that a very heavy workload you're [TS]

00:15:14   probably not maxing out any of the cores 4804 assessed a two-minute time there's [TS]

00:15:20   like this is very generous definition of a heavy workload while the movie playing [TS]

00:15:24   the background a substantial because it is just never giving the CBO break it's [TS]

00:15:28   always decoding decoding made using like hardware to h264 sure it is but but [TS]

00:15:35   still i mean that's that's not a very mean that would have been a heavy test [TS]

00:15:39   in 2006 that is not a very heavy test 2015 but either way ok that's that's [TS]

00:15:45   fine under that allegedly heavy workload none of the retina machines get over [TS]

00:15:51   five hours the the new MacBook one gets 5.0 three hours and i can text every [TS]

00:15:57   other one was below five and the 15th are for and this makes me sad as [TS]

00:16:04   somebody who usually want the 15 inch laptop so this like these numbers this [TS]

00:16:11   is not all-day battery life and this is the main disappointment here in the [TS]

00:16:16   current lineup is that if you if you actually use it in any way heavily [TS]

00:16:22   you're not going to make it going to make it on a cross-country flight [TS]

00:16:25   necessarily [TS]

00:16:27   you're probably not going to make it all day at work if you forgot your adapter [TS]

00:16:30   at home [TS]

00:16:32   stuff like that like the scenarios that that don't necessarily happen every day [TS]

00:16:36   but it's clear that Apple is pushing a directionally like the MacBook one [TS]

00:16:40   having no MagSafe we talked about this a lot before where it's pretty clear [TS]

00:16:44   through the way they were things and even though its design it's pretty clear [TS]

00:16:47   that they don't intend for this thing to be used plugged in all the time they [TS]

00:16:51   intend for it to be more like an iPad where you plug it in to charge it at [TS]

00:16:54   night and you use it all day without being plugged in apparently you're [TS]

00:16:58   moving about someone but that's as you can see from this under the heavy [TS]

00:17:04   workload here even the network while it lasted five hours so that's a pretty [TS]

00:17:08   short day if if you if you're a plug it in and all the other ones even fair much [TS]

00:17:14   more so my argument here is I wish there was there were some models that this [TS]

00:17:20   pattern like they have a better life is so these are such small numbers and [TS]

00:17:24   right now Apple the used to be different categories and laptops they would be [TS]

00:17:29   like the desktop replacement and then like the kind of mid-range and then the [TS]

00:17:34   thin and light ultra portables right now it seems like everything Apple makes is [TS]

00:17:39   a thin and light Ultrabook portable and so my argument is I wish they would make [TS]

00:17:44   not even many but just like one or two models that treated than and lightness a [TS]

00:17:52   little bit for a bigger battery and just offered a really great battery life I'm [TS]

00:17:57   not asking for their entire line to do this I know that this is sexy it sells [TS]

00:18:01   really well and it's free and they love it that's fine I get the appeal there [TS]

00:18:05   but I wish it wasn't the only choice in the lineup like they're all these things [TS]

00:18:10   are moving some sliders and and true making all these tradeoffs there's so [TS]

00:18:14   many traders to be made here but designing a physical thing like this [TS]

00:18:17   especially with battery power versus weight and fitness I want to be clear [TS]

00:18:23   that this is not usually the main goal I think the main goal is weight savings [TS]

00:18:28   and cynicism and you can do afterwards as a result of having removed from [TS]

00:18:33   inside that were big and heavy but I wish there were other options here and a [TS]

00:18:39   lot of people appointed to well you can [TS]

00:18:41   external battery pack for things like the iPhones and iPads and the MacBook [TS]

00:18:44   one that has USB see that's probably gonna be compatible with with extra [TS]

00:18:48   battery packs as well though there aren't any that have enough power yet [TS]

00:18:52   but you know they that will happen you'll get a matter of fact that that's [TS]

00:18:57   good but you can't do it yet but that's prob number one and number two is as you [TS]

00:19:04   see with the iPhone and battery solutions their external battery packs [TS]

00:19:08   have a huge costs associated with with using then rather than just having more [TS]

00:19:14   battery life in the device to begin with it's similar to how I was complaining a [TS]

00:19:18   few weeks back about how USB hubs are all pretty terrible and that by removing [TS]

00:19:22   USB ports enforcement use hope you're forcing people to trade a nice reliable [TS]

00:19:27   internal integrated thing for an external thing made by random third [TS]

00:19:31   parties that usually isn't very good batteries have similar issues where if [TS]

00:19:35   the device has good battery life up front [TS]

00:19:37   built-in then it's it's just nicer if you have to rely on external batteries [TS]

00:19:42   extra batteries have their own charging circuitry to have their own cases if [TS]

00:19:46   you're talking about an iPhone battery case that means you have like two [TS]

00:19:49   different layers of plastic or metal [TS]

00:19:52   around the battery that you have to add to the thickness of the phone rather [TS]

00:19:55   than as having a built-in it's getting all those layers you have port story [TS]

00:19:58   about your different cables you have to keep it charged somehow it charged [TS]

00:20:02   separately and it might not be a pass-through gonna charge you have a [TS]

00:20:06   feeling that there's so many little annoyances and and costs and burdens [TS]

00:20:10   taxes really associated with relying on external battery pack to supplement your [TS]

00:20:15   devices it's so much nicer and more efficient to have them built in here [TS]

00:20:20   talking about this earlier in the week I think I mentioned like a movie theater [TS]

00:20:24   to watch same deal with the Avalanche not a lot of battery life well get a [TS]

00:20:28   crazy g-shock looking movie type case the clamps on the thing somehow and [TS]

00:20:34   provides extra battery power making a book your well but the MacBook one how [TS]

00:20:37   about like a and iPhone movie style thing for the MacBook clamps onto the [TS]

00:20:41   bottom of Mexico are you know things give you the logical conclusion of your [TS]

00:20:46   sort of battery outlier thing is bring back the 17 inch but the MacBook ones [TS]

00:20:51   CPU inside its battery still still one part of course that's the thing too [TS]

00:20:55   because because they offer machines that have giant batteries but hotter CPUs and [TS]

00:21:02   GPUs exactly as you move up the battery capacity amount they also ramped up the [TS]

00:21:07   component types so that you can't get a 15 inch MacBook Pro with a 15 watt TDP [TS]

00:21:14   CPU and it like the ones gonna MacBook Air you can't get that they don't offer [TS]

00:21:17   that option and I would do that if they offered it domestic one CPU is pretty [TS]

00:21:21   low that they get to get that that that 4.5 YTP I might still take it but it's [TS]

00:21:26   pretty low but even if they just put the MacBook Air class CPU the 15 what is TDP [TS]

00:21:32   range they took they take that and put it in the fifteen rather than the 35 40 [TS]

00:21:37   watt TDP they have and therefore the quad course I would buy that because [TS]

00:21:41   that then you'd have this computer that has way more battery life than the [TS]

00:21:46   current F-fifteens and yet it wouldn't have a good performance but I don't [TS]

00:21:50   necessarily need quad cores on my laptop and I the only one i mean you can look [TS]

00:21:54   right now you can see the sales of the MacBook one being apparently pretty good [TS]

00:21:58   can't get them there it seems like they the sales are likely exceeding their [TS]

00:22:04   projected demand for it so obviously there there is demand here for things [TS]

00:22:10   that have other qualities besides top performance men I would kill for it [TS]

00:22:15   wouldn't kill but I would love a 15 inch laptop that had a really low power CPU [TS]

00:22:21   and it and just gave me all the bones battered as trade after that they put in [TS]

00:22:26   the chatroom to this tough armor snap on case for the Apple watch this is not a [TS]

00:22:32   battery to it but just merely makes your Apple ID bigger and uglier so bad oh my [TS]

00:22:36   god that was not a joke [TS]

00:22:37   know that but the lincoln bedroom I saw a picture on Twitter I thought it was a [TS]

00:22:42   joke I mean I guess that protects the nice shiny if you get the sport one and [TS]

00:22:47   don't want people to know you cover it up with this thing like bill yet the [TS]

00:22:51   Apple watch [TS]

00:22:52   not the sport all I don't I don't think you're gaining anything by adding to bed [TS]

00:22:59   of income of any battery so bad it's funny you were talking about thinness [TS]

00:23:03   and battery life because although I don't have a lot to say about the [TS]

00:23:07   battery life earlier today I was at work and the ITI at work send me and I am [TS]

00:23:14   having a question for you would you mind coming over and so I went over to his [TS]

00:23:18   desk in long story shorter CEO had upgraded from the very very first retina [TS]

00:23:23   MacBook Pro to a brand new 15 inch MacBook Pro and the ITV I wanted to get [TS]

00:23:30   our CEO's hundred and sixty years whatever it was [TS]

00:23:33   gig VMware Fusion p.m. from one laptop to the other and he had this like three [TS]

00:23:40   terabyte external drive hanging off the old machine and he said well it won't [TS]

00:23:44   let me write to it why because of NTFS and so initially you know my first [TS]

00:23:49   thought was well let's just get a couple of Ethernet cables to hook it up to a [TS]

00:23:54   switch in life will be good except they're too thin and they don't have [TS]

00:23:59   Ethernet ports in so I said ok we'll just get the stupid dongles to have a we [TS]

00:24:03   don't have any doubles and it's like i understand why we want them to be thin [TS]

00:24:08   just like you guys said it's sexy it sells its its lighter in many cases [TS]

00:24:13   easier to carry but I wouldn't have given for a couple of darn Ethernet [TS]

00:24:18   ports like I said really I asked her just seems crazy to me when she does [TS]

00:24:23   reboot into Windows well in actually what he had said was you know what I'll [TS]

00:24:27   do the V em and all have one of the GM's in Windows copy the copy onto the [TS]

00:24:34   external drive their copy copy the duplicate of the vmi external drive so [TS]

00:24:39   its windows writing to an NTFS partition but that was really convoluted until and [TS]

00:24:44   we almost did it until we realized that oh wait we have other externals we can [TS]

00:24:48   use and we can just format them to be it's a fast plus 18 and pray for the [TS]

00:24:53   best now I did try airdrop that was so unbelievably slow 460 gig file that we [TS]

00:24:59   didn't even see the little circle progress meter start to fill in [TS]

00:25:03   primarily made for that new and you couldn't do both ways to have that now I [TS]

00:25:10   didn't know if that was a possibility and I was confident we did have the [TS]

00:25:13   cables even if it was the problem Thunderbolt networking is that nobody [TS]

00:25:17   has been able to just i i agree with you guys I wish just a shade more sickness I [TS]

00:25:25   really don't think would be so bad and it doesn't have to be the whole product [TS]

00:25:29   line it doesn't even have to be the main products but like like the the 13 inch [TS]

00:25:34   MacBook Pro 15 inch MacBook Pro these realities are things that are already [TS]

00:25:38   there a little bit past the mention of the mainstream 15 and its initially but [TS]

00:25:42   the mainstream and I even said america like I was that bring back to 1700 lot [TS]

00:25:48   of people saying about a second people of the 17 but it's ok to have something [TS]

00:25:56   at the top of the lineup that is not unlike [TS]

00:25:59   even if you look even at the new Mac Pro design right like it we talked about at [TS]

00:26:04   least in the past but even if you look at that they've made tradeoffs there [TS]

00:26:08   that weren't necessarily that nobody really asking for but they made them [TS]

00:26:15   regardless it like reducing the amount of slots and basin ports and everything [TS]

00:26:18   and some of that is beneficial and some of it is just kinda well I don't need [TS]

00:26:24   that but oh well and again like I wish that like the things like the pro [TS]

00:26:28   customers the pro products I wish this wasn't as higher priority as it is I [TS]

00:26:35   still want them to work on that and bring that to let the 15 inch line but [TS]

00:26:39   again it doesn't have to be the only option [TS]

00:26:42   ya wanna chill Smith something that's cool these days our 1st bunch of this [TS]

00:26:47   week is cards against humanity oh yes [TS]

00:26:51   I hope though John what is the toaster oven of the week so this week we have [TS]

00:27:06   the Proctor Silex durable toaster oven broiler model number I think this is the [TS]

00:27:11   model number three 1116 are wow this is a small one very small because the [TS]

00:27:18   smallest hoster tried so far [TS]

00:27:20   barely fits two slices of bread looks very tiny and cute [TS]

00:27:25   well it's this white yep I asked not because I know because i'm looking up on [TS]

00:27:32   Amazon as this as you're talking to me about this and as you're saying the [TS]

00:27:36   words you can barely fit two slices in it I see the title on Amazon which reads [TS]

00:27:40   in and I reading this correctly Proctor Silex 4 slice toaster oven comma white [TS]

00:27:45   that's definitely not it like it but not on a very small two slices if you're [TS]

00:27:53   lucky I think two big slices Bollywood me it's got to think the courts elements [TS]

00:27:57   the big larger ones that led up really quickly instead of like delivery system [TS]

00:28:01   ones that are tender and take a long time to glow too big elements on top on [TS]

00:28:05   bottom with really big nice metal guards over them [TS]

00:28:09   it looks kind of cute but part of that cuteness is the fact that it has a [TS]

00:28:12   curved top which is just a bad idea I could ever want to put stuff on top of [TS]

00:28:18   the toaster the very least you put a little trade that comes with a double [TS]

00:28:20   dose or maybe of apollo doesn't happen I know you probably should be locked up [TS]

00:28:23   tight but people do have a lot of counter space but some of us do you make [TS]

00:28:27   the current everything you put on top so don't want to scare off the side so bad [TS]

00:28:31   idea that door feels pretty flimsy the handle attached to the door kills me [TS]

00:28:36   when you open the door [TS]

00:28:37   feel like I might come off in your hand it doesn't pull the trailer and you open [TS]

00:28:40   the pan like a little pain that comes with it as it slides underneath the wire [TS]

00:28:47   rack seeking kind of put something on the wire rack vindicated drip drip onto [TS]

00:28:50   the heating element of drip into the pan but of course the panels will block the [TS]

00:28:53   heat I'm not entirely sure where that is in there but it's an interesting feature [TS]

00:28:56   at least that race starting this is reasonably doesn't look like it was [TS]

00:29:00   stamped out of piece of aluminum foil but it's not particularly starting to [TS]

00:29:04   get two knobs in front of refreshingly simple interface just two knobs no [TS]

00:29:08   buttons know anything else the Top Knobs for temperatures you go from zero to 450 [TS]

00:29:14   and if you pass for fifty year into the toast zone Gabrielle starting to look [TS]

00:29:18   like right around 450 and the bottom knob is basically just a time where they [TS]

00:29:22   put a benchmark is unavoidable down to is turning clockwise in and at the time [TS]

00:29:26   are you turn to the left and it just forced on stays on this toasters the [TS]

00:29:31   ticker so you must love that the way do anything with it is Top Knobs either [TS]

00:29:36   send it to a temperature to bake broil or set it to toast and then to make it [TS]

00:29:41   do anything at the bottom and you cranky that you put into force on position [TS]

00:29:44   which I'm not sure why you do that maybe because like that the bottom timely goes [TS]

00:29:48   to 15 minutes if you wanna go for longer than 15 and don't have to recreate he [TS]

00:29:51   just put it in the poorest opposition and I guess don't forget the burn your [TS]

00:29:55   house down but yeah you turn it to whatever you want and that little market [TS]

00:29:59   look like toast getting darker and the five-minute mark but bottom line it's [TS]

00:30:02   just a timer tick tick tick tick tick pretty doggone allowed me to Texas [TS]

00:30:06   second I really don't like taking toasters I just you know it you don't [TS]

00:30:12   want that in the morning you want to have this lab thing taking in your [TS]

00:30:15   kitchen in the morning I definitely don't really I mean I would think it [TS]

00:30:18   would be helpful to help indicate that our Design well I mean like what I want [TS]

00:30:23   from costa is a child does but we had a little not to push it down and then when [TS]

00:30:29   it's done to go thing and little thing comes up and that lets you know that [TS]

00:30:33   your trust in between I don't need to know right thing when you're done but I [TS]

00:30:37   lied so but anyway since two small toaster hasn't too big courts elements I [TS]

00:30:43   had some high hopes that it would be a faster but it is way slow like more than [TS]

00:30:48   a minute slower than other toaster toaster a single slice of bread [TS]

00:30:51   and the reason that does that is that the bottom element does not turn on when [TS]

00:30:56   you're in test mode the bottom element does not turn them on your bro move the [TS]

00:31:00   only time the bottom he turns out that is broken for the only time the bottom [TS]

00:31:04   heating on turns on his menu and bake Moten understand that all posts on both [TS]

00:31:08   sides of the bread toasted how you can use both sides of the British you just [TS]

00:31:10   turn on the top element so it makes it super slow and stupid so you like it [TS]

00:31:16   this is my least favorite toaster good it's really small it's really slow it [TS]

00:31:21   takes it it does something dumb I didn't get the chance to do something maybe if [TS]

00:31:25   I put it on bake at 450 it would tow spread faster than I put it on toast oh [TS]

00:31:30   yeah of course mister knobs exactly the right spot which is you know very fuzzy [TS]

00:31:33   or whatever so big thumbs down the stairs to have high hopes given just the [TS]

00:31:37   specs and the size but that just has too many things wrong [TS]

00:31:45   like did you know that cinnamon raisin bread the Pepperidge Farm cells you know [TS]

00:31:59   that comes in a plastic bag it's pretty sliced [TS]

00:32:01   you know how small those slices are I don't think it fit for them in there [TS]

00:32:05   could you fit for melba toast and here for whites probably but now it is [TS]

00:32:13   ridiculous for this price I would have to see the price of the 29 Black and [TS]

00:32:19   Decker on the 29 Black and Decker one was way better than just a little bit [TS]

00:32:23   there and it was similarly features two knobs turned to the right thing or [TS]

00:32:27   whatever but I just did the job better toasted actually tell us something I [TS]

00:32:30   would I could never wait this thing to do something about it was done it was [TS]

00:32:32   just a poser the top so do not buy this toaster well thanks a lot two cards [TS]

00:32:38   against humanity for sponsoring this week the right that was exciting [TS]

00:32:42   speaking of exciting john you're one of your favorite albums is available again [TS]

00:32:52   well it never really wasn't available but half of the Internet has written us [TS]

00:32:56   to inform us that the journey soundtrack is available on finals so everyone [TS]

00:33:03   should have been writing to you because you might be excited about why would I [TS]

00:33:08   have the journey soundtrack and it didn't farm actually I do as well and I [TS]

00:33:12   would never wanted a record because they don't have anything planned on Mb why [TS]

00:33:16   would I want that mean you don't want things to be less communion scratchy [TS]

00:33:21   less reliable overtime bigger and also sound worse maybe like their their [TS]

00:33:27   picture discs they were kind of cool and the album cover is kind of cool but I do [TS]

00:33:32   also have the journey art books I feel like I have the journey artwork stuff [TS]

00:33:36   covered so it's at best a poster and I were to drink it [TS]

00:33:39   yep I like it may be a kind of any collectible thing but I would never [TS]

00:33:44   player but you know I like it would get get them and bring them to your dads [TS]

00:33:48   fancy timetable [TS]

00:33:49   well that's the thing is I was going to remind the internet he seems to forget [TS]

00:33:53   so often that I actually do not own a turntable [TS]

00:33:57   and I think that people seem to forget that just because I fancy term two [TS]

00:34:01   turntables and because I think that the tea ceremony is fine and I won't say [TS]

00:34:06   whether or not I think they sound better but I actually do not own a turntable [TS]

00:34:10   and of course anytime anything happens even vaguely related to vinyl have the [TS]

00:34:14   internet comes to remind me either that vinyl is terrible ro haha look people [TS]

00:34:19   are actually buying final year all freakin crazy etcetera etcetera but no I [TS]

00:34:24   actually do not own a turntable and I'd like to get one at some point but i dont [TS]

00:34:28   have one so I'm not going to be buying the cider and if I did just like you [TS]

00:34:31   said John I'd be bringing it to dads to listen to it there and if you ask me [TS]

00:34:34   what was the journey soundtrack originally recorded onto an analog [TS]

00:34:39   medium and then kept analog entire editing and mastering process surely not [TS]

00:34:44   yeah it is it is recordings of people playing instruments so start it start [TS]

00:34:49   off and log in that respect ok so it isn't purely electronic music soundtrack [TS]

00:34:54   ok but yes I don't mind people who like vinyl I guess mind when they start [TS]

00:34:59   saying it sounds better because it it sounds different and by almost every [TS]

00:35:06   actual like objective measure it sounds worse but it does sound different in [TS]

00:35:11   some ways it could be more pleasing to people are you can bring back fond [TS]

00:35:15   memories of the past and that's why it's popular none of those things are are [TS]

00:35:23   evidence to tell people that it just sounds better what's popular now because [TS]

00:35:27   it's retro like that's why that's why you know the quote unquote hipsters like [TS]

00:35:30   it because it is there and they don't have a magic probably they were on a [TS]

00:35:36   live you know the parents didn't play record albums for them and they were [TS]

00:35:39   young but yes there is there is effectively no technical merit for it [TS]

00:35:46   there are lots of other reasons to enjoy it but you get any technical argument is [TS]

00:35:51   not founded in reality you done I think so today I said deeply regret bringing [TS]

00:35:59   stuff [TS]

00:36:00   alright so we should probably bring up to be a BDC tickets and how that turned [TS]

00:36:06   out [TS]

00:36:07   we've been asked several times I have not knowingly replied anyone on Twitter [TS]

00:36:12   I didn't know what the group of us wanted to do if we wanted to make it a [TS]

00:36:16   surprise we wanted to share we have concluded we would like to share so John [TS]

00:36:20   or are you going to be able to go to watc I don't know I enter the WC ticket [TS]

00:36:26   lottery and I did not get a ticket on the lottery and I am NOT going without a [TS]

00:36:30   ticket so there you have it if I don't get a ticket I'm not going right now I [TS]

00:36:36   am NOT going I still have my hotel booked because it's easy to cancel the [TS]

00:36:39   twenty-four hours of foreplay do not have any flights booked and I'm not [TS]

00:36:42   gonna take it so I'm kinda bummed by that I was especially bombed during all [TS]

00:36:48   those people who did get tickets and later those people may or may not [TS]

00:36:52   include Marco I did in fact get a ticket on the lottery which is extremely [TS]

00:36:57   exciting in it and I actually did as well as I'm very excited about and I am [TS]

00:37:01   very very sad johnnie you did not get a ticket I I really wish that all three of [TS]

00:37:06   us did and who knows maybe the wEDC ferry will sprinkle a ticket on you [TS]

00:37:11   someway somehow but that is the situation for those of you and asked [TS]

00:37:16   that's the deal any other thoughts on that from the two of you it's pretty [TS]

00:37:21   good [TS]

00:37:21   like to add a 3230 set to get the lottery that's that seems pretty good [TS]

00:37:26   and the grand scheme of things [TS]

00:37:27   yeah it does seem like I mean last year there is as you mentioned last last time [TS]

00:37:31   there was a system last year where you can enter multiple developer account and [TS]

00:37:35   you can tell if you weren't really that sure if you want to go you wanted to see [TS]

00:37:38   maybe I'll get it and get the opportunity by ticket this year you had [TS]

00:37:42   to like commit to buy one and they would charge you to to give it to you we [TS]

00:37:45   should talk about that too because that is heartbreaking for the people who won [TS]

00:37:50   the lottery and tried to charge their card didn't chart the charge didn't work [TS]

00:37:55   because their credit card company like flagged as fraud or whatever and in many [TS]

00:37:59   cases immediately called the people said hey some company just tried to charge [TS]

00:38:03   your card $1,600 we blocked it do you wanna let the charge through maybe I [TS]

00:38:07   guess you have a charger but it was too late Apple moved on and gave their [TS]

00:38:11   ticket to someone [TS]

00:38:12   else I'm pretty sure that didn't happen to me but that would have just broken my [TS]

00:38:15   heart even more yet to Marcos point I know that happened to us Williams and he [TS]

00:38:19   was he handled it much better than I would have but he was pretty upset about [TS]

00:38:23   it I would have been just freakin damaged devastated and it's funny [TS]

00:38:27   because I don't remember if I told the story of the show but suffice it to say [TS]

00:38:29   during the registration process even though I didn't read the part where it [TS]

00:38:34   says oh you'll get your going to be Institute charged if you win I did read [TS]

00:38:38   something which I couldn't find when I went back to look for it so I i feel [TS]

00:38:43   like it was during the process of registering that I saw but anyway it [TS]

00:38:47   said you should probably warn your bank this is gonna happen because we are [TS]

00:38:52   reserving the right to just punt you if your card is declined and so I saw that [TS]

00:38:57   and I immediately called Bank of America and yes before you write me I understand [TS]

00:39:01   that you hate bankamerica they screwed you I get it Bank of America sucks vinyl [TS]

00:39:06   I know this is not the case here it all out attack in case it is a white shirt [TS]

00:39:12   and this is actually the first not awesome experience I've had with the [TS]

00:39:19   second not off the awesome experience of how to think America and I called them [TS]

00:39:23   and I said hey you know I'd like to pre authorizes charged that goes through [TS]

00:39:26   blah blah blah that's lovely but we don't pre-authorized things ok now it [TS]

00:39:32   turned out that I did win the lottery I did get Institute charged it did go [TS]

00:39:37   through which was slightly surprising cuz just a couple of years ago I don't [TS]

00:39:41   remember which one it was I did have the double jeopardy Dec ticket declined [TS]

00:39:47   originally I think this might have in the last year of the mad rush you know [TS]

00:39:50   I'm sorry the next last year the mad rush and they called me and said do you [TS]

00:39:54   want this jazz gas for the love of god yes let it go through and and so I was [TS]

00:39:59   scared this year but apparently it all worked out but first Williams hits here [TS]

00:40:04   we had talked briefly and I and i believe he said he had pretty much [TS]

00:40:06   instantly just like Marco is their money said had instantly said yes let the [TS]

00:40:11   charge through and Apple already moved on it was already too late fifties and [TS]

00:40:15   that I understand that but gosh thats stinky man I don't know I don't [TS]

00:40:21   understand that I say you know given a window [TS]

00:40:25   time you maybe even 24 hours like it doesn't need all it's not as a visit [TS]

00:40:29   race for us all to be settled like we need to have all the tickets given to [TS]

00:40:32   someone and it's like if they won the lottery and they got picked given 24 [TS]

00:40:37   hours to the charge to go through I think that's reasonable something like [TS]

00:40:39   that because moving on amelia is just because I didn't you know I didn't call [TS]

00:40:44   to reauthorize I'm pretty sure that wasn't a problem like I never saw any [TS]

00:40:47   charges on the card and never got any calls about any charges being read I [TS]

00:40:50   just in the lottery period right but if I did I would be super upset like that [TS]

00:40:54   that's just feel like that's a great way to to do this visit was not like they [TS]

00:40:59   were in a rush like 24 hours is fine and for those people who won the lottery and [TS]

00:41:04   then lost it [TS]

00:41:05   man I mean I guess make someone else happy because their ticket went to [TS]

00:41:08   somebody else who previously wouldn't have won a lottery but it's just boy [TS]

00:41:11   that's a bummer it's a it's a pretty crappy way to lose and and and you know [TS]

00:41:15   what he said you know they they did warn you on the paper in the journal [TS]

00:41:19   bankruptcy they told you this would happen just because they say that [TS]

00:41:23   doesn't mean there's anything you can do to stop the stupid credit card can be [TS]

00:41:26   sometimes you can call them and say please just please let this ruin their [TS]

00:41:29   be like either we can't do this I'm like oh yes there were told it at 3 in the [TS]

00:41:32   rejected anyway it looks like a human their previous charges just a bunch [TS]

00:41:36   algorithms I don't know like maybe you're picking the wrong card like I'm a [TS]

00:41:40   change which card is attached to my like Apple I D to one that gets used more [TS]

00:41:44   frequently so the discharge would look so strange on it or whatever anyway like [TS]

00:41:49   that for next year I i would say that was like the one aspect of this the [TS]

00:41:52   didn't feel fair the rest of it felt very fair very nicely run it was [TS]

00:41:57   executed well the whole rest of it I thought was great but the credit card [TS]

00:42:01   fraud thing I think that was one part that is just kind of kind of crappy for [TS]

00:42:06   people and it happened a lot of people wasn't just heard from a lot of people [TS]

00:42:09   who happened to it it's really unfortunate it really is even though I [TS]

00:42:14   said I understand it as john was talking I was thinking you know they told pretty [TS]

00:42:19   much everyone what was it this past friday is that correct [TS]

00:42:22   yeah you could have left a 24 hour grace period for them to register and still [TS]

00:42:28   had time if it didn't work out to give other people the ticket [TS]

00:42:32   instill made it by the promised time of five in the evening on Monday Pacific [TS]

00:42:38   time so it is a major bummer incontri feel terrible force Williams and the [TS]

00:42:42   other people who had this happen to them but I agree with you Marco that all told [TS]

00:42:47   and I like to think I would say this even if I didn't get a ticket this was [TS]

00:42:52   probably about as fair as they could have made it and and Chris Williams and [TS]

00:42:57   people who got like it just feels bad because you know that happened but the [TS]

00:42:59   bottom line is his ticket went to somebody else who otherwise wouldn't [TS]

00:43:02   have gotten one so that person it's in the end it is simply a random [TS]

00:43:06   distribution of people is just a little bit of non-random as in like those you [TS]

00:43:10   got rejected like it is it some participants never could have one right [TS]

00:43:14   I also would say that it does seem just totally anecdotally it does seem like a [TS]

00:43:21   larger proportion of people who applied got them this year than last year [TS]

00:43:25   indicating that the whole multiple submissions thing from last year versus [TS]

00:43:29   this year's Commission meeting thing seems to have helped ya like I would [TS]

00:43:34   love to know what are the odds of two out of three hours getting because I [TS]

00:43:37   feel like they did not give tickets to two-thirds of the applications and it's [TS]

00:43:42   true also a real-time follow-up from Dechert here she said there's no such [TS]

00:43:47   thing as a pre-authorization only an authorization and authorization need to [TS]

00:43:51   pay and then they continued in this is interesting here's how Apple could do it [TS]

00:43:55   better in the WWDC Apple or perhaps you know the story let people do an Apple [TS]

00:44:00   paid to authorize the payment and then only commit the transaction if and only [TS]

00:44:04   if they win the lottery [TS]

00:44:06   yeah that's what I was saying last week we would do him when he comes as you do [TS]

00:44:09   it all for the amount at the time they do the thing but you don't do the [TS]

00:44:13   settled part of it where you actually take the money from them like off [TS]

00:44:16   doesn't do anything just as yes your authorized to pay this amount of this [TS]

00:44:18   but like do the testing at that point you'd still be the same situation of [TS]

00:44:22   like when you click through the thing that they tried to do the author may get [TS]

00:44:24   rejected and then your credit card company called you like what would be [TS]

00:44:28   happening then would you still be in the flow of clicking through with it send [TS]

00:44:30   you back to the page or would it just be like sorry we tried to authorize it we [TS]

00:44:34   couldn't now you can never go through this process again [TS]

00:44:36   it you have to think about what their goals are what is this is they're [TS]

00:44:41   tweaking the system of legal tweaked it again next year maybe some people are [TS]

00:44:46   saying the chatroom the people whose car got charged they got rejected and then [TS]

00:44:50   didn't get it take it maybe they have some recourse to say look Apple I won [TS]

00:44:54   the lottery but my car got the night and I approved it is there anything you can [TS]

00:44:59   do I don't know I haven't heard about anybody successfully doing that [TS]

00:45:01   who didn't get their ticket because their card was rejected but anyway we [TS]

00:45:06   can all be winners [TS]

00:45:07   that's that's super chipper and then a final bit of follow-up just to remind [TS]

00:45:16   everyone that ATP shirts are indeed available there have been a lot of [TS]

00:45:21   people who have already bought them which we are all extremely thankful for [TS]

00:45:25   and that is very kind of all of you [TS]

00:45:27   Marco or John amateur which one of you happen to have this up but do you want [TS]

00:45:31   to talk about speaking of shaming casey you want to talk about what the [TS]

00:45:35   breakdown is far yeah sure I mean so you go you can go into campaigns you can see [TS]

00:45:40   this is not private information go to the campaign you can see him anyways so [TS]

00:45:44   and so the the regular shirt the middle one we saw it at 600 the sport we've [TS]

00:45:54   sold two hundred and sixteen and the addition of Psalm 108 what's interesting [TS]

00:46:00   and the reason why I think Apple made the Apple edition is that even though we [TS]

00:46:06   have sold roughly a sixth as many editions we've sold the regular ones [TS]

00:46:09   it's making almost half the profit compared to regular that's why the [TS]

00:46:15   addition exists in the Apple I am pretty sure and the addition is much more than [TS]

00:46:20   they are dishonest twice the price of the shirt the Apple opposition is more [TS]

00:46:24   than twice the price of the Apple yeah by a lot yet though so we don't know [TS]

00:46:29   what they can do their demand curve like at a certain point it starts to get [TS]

00:46:32   diminishing returns but apparently a lot of people are willing to pay $50 for a [TS]

00:46:37   t-shirt with gold colored foil on it and we could the reason we didn't charge [TS]

00:46:42   more people say you should have charged more than we thought about it for the [TS]

00:46:45   joke value I think it would've been funnier if we charge more but [TS]

00:46:48   the reason we didn't is because we knew some people would buy it and I didn't [TS]

00:46:53   want to be responsible for somebody having spent like $100 to $200 on the [TS]

00:46:57   t-shirt yeah like we've been doing it like hiking prices like would be funny [TS]

00:47:02   prices so high that we know nobody's gonna buy like three people would buy it [TS]

00:47:06   and and bottom line I'm gonna buy these things do get about one of my wife's I'm [TS]

00:47:12   by amounts to protect myself I bought 21 for me one for TIFF and and 1 and1 each [TS]

00:47:17   of the regular the shirt edition as well and that they did the collection at [TS]

00:47:22   Eastern so the loser shirt out of the CD you gave the breakdowns for a t-shirt [TS]

00:47:28   tshirt sports and in addition but remember that ATP shirts part comes in [TS]

00:47:32   two different styles that had two different colors on it and that requires [TS]

00:47:36   two separate campaigns have two different color so a t-shirt support [TS]

00:47:40   comes in blue men's version and white for women's version and the white womens [TS]

00:47:45   ATP shirt sport has sold a grand total of 38 for the first few days 2004 a long [TS]

00:47:53   time is it because it's why people don't like white is it because a lot of women [TS]

00:47:58   don't want an ATP shared or don't listen to the show I don't think we can get a [TS]

00:48:04   breakdown of this woman's versions of all the other shirts as well I don't [TS]

00:48:07   think we can get a breakdown of those are sold maybe when it's over we can [TS]

00:48:10   find out but yeah that white sport shirt is just not popular in going to print [TS]

00:48:17   three is the minimum so that people only people who are the white women sure you [TS]

00:48:22   will get your shirts but boy not a good so I think it if you want to continue to [TS]

00:48:28   encourage Marco to think that he's always right about everything don't buy [TS]

00:48:31   white shirts but if you'd like Marco to be taken down a peg do me a favor to all [TS]

00:48:37   of us a favor by yourself a white shirt and it's a white women short by the way [TS]

00:48:41   so feel free to buy it you don't have to be willing to buy it but beware [TS]

00:48:44   everybody ok our second budget this week is Squarespace the online platform that [TS]

00:49:25   your own images you can buy images from Getty Images right there in the [TS]

00:49:28   interface it is so nice [TS]

00:49:31   all this stuff if you're designing a site if you're writing a site look [TS]

00:49:35   everyone who listen to the show knows there are other options to how to how to [TS]

00:49:39   create a web page but the reason you Squarespace is because you just get so [TS]

00:49:44   much built in for you know for no additional cost you know for free of [TS]

00:49:48   time wise it's just you get so much functionality in there that you don't [TS]

00:49:52   have to build or configure someone else a system with plugins and everything [TS]

00:49:56   else you don't have to keep me updated you don't have to you know not modify [TS]

00:50:01   the design of a new device come out to try to fit the device is now all those [TS]

00:50:05   unresponsive I mean it's just you get so much built in here but you don't have to [TS]

00:50:11   worry about it's also great if you're the techy guy and someone else needs a [TS]

00:50:16   site and they ask you to help them build a site just send them here because you [TS]

00:50:21   know they'll have everything here and Squarespace supports it so you don't [TS]

00:50:24   have to [TS]

00:50:26   is great our site is hosted by Squarespace can't say enough good things [TS]

00:50:29   about Squarespace for both making sites for yourself or for making such for [TS]

00:50:33   other people or for directing other people to make their own sites and leave [TS]

00:50:36   you alone it is so great for all these things they are doing a special thing [TS]

00:51:18   city inspires them to help build beautiful websites learn more [TS]

00:51:21   NY commit dot com for New York NY commit anyway Squarespace is awesome [TS]

00:51:27   give it a try for building a website you really should trust me it is so much [TS]

00:51:30   better then transferred to CMS yourself or especially trying to somebody else [TS]

00:51:34   that the CMS for themselves and it's so it's so much better so check it out [TS]

00:51:39   square space.com 89 this is when you go there they have a free trial you can set [TS]

00:51:45   up a real free trial and there is no credit card required and the site is [TS]

00:51:49   fully functional thing you can do is put your domain name on everything else is [TS]

00:51:52   fully functional and even that worth it I think it was just a little luck on [TS]

00:51:56   page anyway you can do so much of the free trade you can do pretty much [TS]

00:51:59   everything go said late today just so you can see them talking about you can [TS]

00:52:03   see how good it is for yourself [TS]

00:52:05   square space.com enter offer code ATP when you finally decide to buy it and [TS]

00:52:10   that will give you 10% off thanks a lot to Squarespace response and I show once [TS]

00:52:13   again Squarespace start here go anywhere anyway so we put off for the last week [TS]

00:52:20   or two but the time his comm we should probably talk about photos 40 instead I [TS]

00:52:25   realize this and the last week sure that we keep talking about photos and we mean [TS]

00:52:30   the application whose name is photos that also happens to deal with photos [TS]

00:52:34   and you know when it when Im saying it sometimes I say it with a capital P [TS]

00:52:38   sometimes you're saying little lower case be another great name from the [TS]

00:52:42   company that brought you the mail application that's called the mail and [TS]

00:52:46   the note that pitch count transaction it's called counter and yes and so forth [TS]

00:52:52   and be like naming a magazine the magazine death seriously [TS]

00:52:56   who among us has been using photos for anything other than launching the empty [TS]

00:53:03   application with nothing in it I am Casey [TS]

00:53:07   really important to me into it [TS]

00:53:11   no no no I have not touched every time it comes up when I put in like my sdcard [TS]

00:53:14   my camera I immediately quit and walk away we'll see you have launched it [TS]

00:53:19   though then well it's launched itself I haven't knowingly done in the reason I [TS]

00:53:23   haven't touched it is because I've heard just barely enough horror stories that I [TS]

00:53:27   don't go anywhere near it and I suspect that the horror stories are [TS]

00:53:31   one-in-a-million I suspect that in some but not all cases it was user error but [TS]

00:53:37   actually just earlier today steven hack it was talking to all of us about how he [TS]

00:53:43   was having some problems with it and yes I could back up everything thirty five [TS]

00:53:47   more times but it's just this is not a problem that I have in my life that I [TS]

00:53:52   feel like photos should or could solve so are you using instead then so I in [TS]

00:53:59   terms of backup I have photos on my personal machine I have them duplicated [TS]

00:54:06   to the Synology and then also time machine and CrashPlan and picture life [TS]

00:54:13   and so between all of those things I have it I hope pretty well covered and I [TS]

00:54:19   freaking love picture life it's very much like every pics was before it [TS]

00:54:23   passed away and let it rest in peace and picture like does everything I think I [TS]

00:54:28   need so I'm going to be listening very intently no sarcasm intended as I would [TS]

00:54:34   be curious to hear what photos would do that picture life wouldn't do for me but [TS]

00:54:39   you just have the pictures and folders and there's no Mac Mac application [TS]

00:54:44   that's correct I do you like look at your BS you take your pictures and your [TS]

00:54:47   camera you plug your computer it stops them all down to the whatever picture [TS]

00:54:51   life but like do you get to see them or do anything with them to the workflow is [TS]

00:54:56   I put the sdcard my computer I go through and I don't it's extremely rare [TS]

00:55:01   that I do any sort of post-processing but I'll go through and delete the ones [TS]

00:55:05   that I know are just crap [TS]

00:55:06   I'll delete any raw files that I think I'll never need again and will [TS]

00:55:09   inevitably regret having deleted and then I will run them through a script [TS]

00:55:14   that I tweaked that dr. drang wrote that will reach will file them into folders [TS]

00:55:21   by year 10 months and then rename the files so they're named by entire date [TS]

00:55:27   including timestamp the only other thing I'll do that even vaguely like [TS]

00:55:30   post-processing is I have some scripts which I believe I against all from Dr [TS]

00:55:34   drank that will eg location information to them but basically what I do is I go [TS]

00:55:42   through them delete the ones I don't want and geotextile need to and then [TS]

00:55:45   have the script slip them and file them away and the picture life automatically [TS]

00:55:48   finds them and upload them so when you look at them to look at them after after [TS]

00:55:53   picture I posted up to you open the picture life app on your phone or [TS]

00:55:56   something or go to the website or no joke I could but generally speaking I [TS]

00:56:00   look at them as I'm going through all of them to see which ones I want which ones [TS]

00:56:03   I don't want as you're going through it like in the Finder yes quick quick look [TS]

00:56:07   to look at them [TS]

00:56:08   that's right yeah I guess I guess though we're going in I'm not saying this is [TS]

00:56:17   the right way of doing things and please i dont im not looking for any answers [TS]

00:56:22   other than this app so whatever you're going to recommend I appreciate it but [TS]

00:56:28   it's ok i'm ok the way it is but I am curious to hear what photos would do for [TS]

00:56:33   me and I'm not saying he won't I'm not saying that sarcastically I mean I [TS]

00:56:36   genuinely curious to hear what photos are due for me to make this experience [TS]

00:56:39   better that's fair I mean it really depends a lot on how you want to browse [TS]

00:56:45   your photos I mean for me my big problem that I've always have a photo apps is [TS]

00:56:50   that you had to choose like good performance good editing controls and [TS]

00:56:57   integration with iOS devices and you had to choose between those things you [TS]

00:57:02   couldn't have all three of those you could have at most to you know what kind [TS]

00:57:06   of project management rangel like you had at most two and photos actually hits [TS]

00:57:11   all three and it is the first thing to have good iowa's integration iPhoto and [TS]

00:57:17   aperture never did photostream [TS]

00:57:19   was never good it was it was photostream was always a half solution that was [TS]

00:57:24   almost dangerous and how much it didn't cover and how it didn't work [TS]

00:57:29   photostream was was just a nightmare of confusion and and misled expectations of [TS]

00:57:38   how it worked and what didn't it didn't do this is the solution you know both [TS]

00:57:42   but the photo app will talk with the app separately the second but just the whole [TS]

00:57:45   concept of like the photos in the cloud thing I think that this is like the the [TS]

00:57:49   cloud photo service that we have been begging Apple to make as we knew that no [TS]

00:57:54   one else really have the integration into iOS devices the way Apple to us and [TS]

00:57:59   we've been begging Apple make us for years and we all thought they never [TS]

00:58:02   would and then they did and it seems like the cloud component actually works [TS]

00:58:08   pretty well I mean I too have heard a couple of horror stories here and there [TS]

00:58:12   but it sounds like the problem is not in the cloud necessarily it's either like [TS]

00:58:17   you know steven stories sent the app curtain itself a little bit at local [TS]

00:58:21   database [TS]

00:58:22   think so I've heard a couple of people who said that the import didn't import [TS]

00:58:26   some large chunk of their files and those are both serious problems for sure [TS]

00:58:31   but I those are very lengthy cloud related so I think it's safe to say so [TS]

00:58:36   far with what we've seen so far it looks like the cloud part of this is quite [TS]

00:58:42   good actually it seems to be working and you know it's all built on like as your [TS]

00:58:47   web services and stuff as far as we know so it you know it should scale properly [TS]

00:58:52   it should scale ok there's already tons of ppl importing massive back catalog [TS]

00:58:57   photos into it all within the last couple of weeks so within a short time [TS]

00:59:00   and it seems to be doing pretty well so overall it's you know the cloud part is [TS]

00:59:06   fine it it seemed that the clip art works and that's impressive that's a [TS]

00:59:10   that's a very very impressive accomplishment right there we'll talk [TS]

00:59:14   with the pricing in a bit but functionally it seemed that the clip art [TS]

00:59:17   works the app is no certainly up for debate I would say this is definitely [TS]

00:59:23   not a replacement for aperture [TS]

00:59:27   the way that Apple [TS]

00:59:29   kinda wedge did so well we're gonna stop working after turnout even though we [TS]

00:59:33   were kind of never really working on it that much but we're gonna start working [TS]

00:59:37   on it for real this time and it you know that that's less good for average users [TS]

00:59:43   I'm coming from Lightroom and I used to use Aperture and before the days I [TS]

00:59:47   thought oh and what I always wanted an iPhoto is is just like the nice simple [TS]

00:59:55   management I thought I never I never wanted the really complicated like [TS]

01:00:01   filing system and management and keyboard and everything I never wanted [TS]

01:00:05   that part of what aperture offered or Lightroom I really just wanted iPhoto [TS]

01:00:09   with better editing controls and that's what this is [TS]

01:00:13   that's what it feels like a total rewrite of iPhoto or for the new [TS]

01:00:18   generation of everything it's like iPhoto X you know like you pronounce it [TS]

01:00:24   for software like this that's not the operating system it does feel like that [TS]

01:00:29   it's the modern version of iPhoto with really good editing controls and it does [TS]

01:00:33   things that I wouldn't have guessed they would have done like for example it is [TS]

01:00:38   doing losses editing on those adjustments and then it sinks the [TS]

01:00:41   adjustment values to your iOS devices so you can like adjust the brightness on [TS]

01:00:46   one device and then you can go to a different device and it's basically the [TS]

01:00:52   same base image it isn't like be key to the image or making a copy and doing [TS]

01:00:56   that like it's doing it properly is doing what you what you would want to do [TS]

01:01:00   so all that perspective this seems like exactly what I wanted and I'm so far I [TS]

01:01:08   have used very little so far as I imported my whole library but I done [TS]

01:01:12   very little editing and it I browsed a little bit the president faces is nice [TS]

01:01:16   their ads you know some wish list items here and there for like 20 different [TS]

01:01:19   view they're sorting options or whatever but for the most part of minor stuff [TS]

01:01:22   overall I'm pretty impressed with it it seems like they took a very big problem [TS]

01:01:28   that nobody has fully solved and solved in exactly the way that is probably [TS]

01:01:34   gonna be best for me at least and probably a lot of other people [TS]

01:01:40   are you gonna ever give it a shot you think are you gonna wait a long time if [TS]

01:01:45   ever I think I'm gonna wait between a medium in a long time I heard of couple [TS]

01:01:52   of horror stories which were like 12 hand information about large deletions [TS]

01:01:56   that happened again when you have as many customers as Apple does this is [TS]

01:02:01   inevitably going to happen no software is perfect but especially since I'm a [TS]

01:02:06   new dad I and even though I have all my photos and what did I say quadruple [TS]

01:02:10   cater whatever i just i really am scared to mess with to mess with this stuff and [TS]

01:02:17   additionally one of the things that I've made a critical part of my workflow [TS]

01:02:23   which is what I described earlier by tagging were you taking all my pictures [TS]

01:02:27   that are taken with my Micro Four Thirds camera [TS]

01:02:31   done that is because picture life does a really good job of allowing you to [TS]

01:02:35   search for photos by location and I believe was unconnected that they said [TS]

01:02:39   that that is it is impossible to do you take pictures today with the photos that [TS]

01:02:43   I don't think obviously not used its me going out on a limb but I believe that's [TS]

01:02:48   what they said I that's right but I mean again this is this is a 1.0 really like [TS]

01:02:53   it is officially like you know the next version of iPhoto and aperture but [TS]

01:02:57   really it's it's a 1.0 it feels like a total ground-up rewrite so it wouldn't [TS]

01:03:02   surprise me if things that end it will obey geode has it already embedded in [TS]

01:03:06   the files but it will you modify them afterwards in the end you know the kind [TS]

01:03:10   of thing I can see them feeding later you know how to feature later so that's [TS]

01:03:13   that's not a huge deal for me and also most of Thursday shooter with my iPhone [TS]

01:03:18   anyway so it's already tagged so you know it again depending how you use it [TS]

01:03:22   and one thing I like about her from paranoia perspective is we first heard [TS]

01:03:28   about this app you know almost a year ago we first heard about it we talked [TS]

01:03:34   about on the show and and i had expressed a concern of you know I don't [TS]

01:03:38   want I don't want the only copies the only master copies to be in the cloud I [TS]

01:03:43   want I want to local app that just has files sitting in the file system that I [TS]

01:03:48   can then back up and I can restore if necessary [TS]

01:03:51   or just and that's what this offers it is very similar to iPhoto in that it has [TS]

01:03:57   a package which is a directory has a package that inside that package of a [TS]

01:04:03   database is just all your files and they're not organized in a pickle useful [TS]

01:04:07   way but they're all there and so if you ever had to reorganize them you could [TS]

01:04:12   you can order has invited by their ex updates and it'd be fine so that is all [TS]

01:04:18   there i important things into it by dumping a bunch of files on it there's [TS]

01:04:21   nothing I could do the same thing again if I ever had to like start fresh if [TS]

01:04:24   there's something ever occur up to head to like delete all of my photos of my [TS]

01:04:27   classes are over again it looks like I I'd be able to do that just fine with my [TS]

01:04:32   regular backup system that I have and I have this Mac sitting here with all the [TS]

01:04:35   files on it also gives me you know the the options it has for reducing a local [TS]

01:04:40   disk space usage that is really interesting for a backup perspective [TS]

01:04:44   because you could for instance have a Mac Mini in your house somewhere in your [TS]

01:04:50   closet or somewhere or at work that has enough disk space on it that you can [TS]

01:04:56   have that be a second client and have that backup your entire library itself [TS]

01:05:01   and then maybe on your main computer if you get a new computer with an SSD in it [TS]

01:05:05   that maybe just maybe on a space for your photos are you don't want to buy [TS]

01:05:08   the terabyte SSD 4,000 bucks or whatever then maybe you can have your main [TS]

01:05:12   computer not have all the everglades on it and you have some other some other [TS]

01:05:16   Mac that is logged in and is backed up in its own way luck with that player [TS]

01:05:21   ever have that logged in and be backed up somewhere else that can have a big [TS]

01:05:24   slow disk in it and have that number party I'm a computer anymore and I [TS]

01:05:28   considered especially being helpful for laptop users so the options gives you a [TS]

01:05:33   44 gigs like us who want control over the files are actually pretty good yeah [TS]

01:05:39   I am impressed by them in one of the things that it makes me want to try it [TS]

01:05:44   as much as I very reticent to do so is I'm probably going to be a breeding my [TS]

01:05:50   three or four year old [TS]

01:05:52   personal machine which is a 15 inch Retina MacBook MacBook Pro or not run [TS]

01:05:56   excuse me 15 inch IRA's MacBook Pro I'm looking at upgrading that so probably [TS]

01:06:01   new 15 inch machine sometime soon and this thing has I think 750 gig hard [TS]

01:06:07   drive in it and I don't have an overabundance of free space on it and [TS]

01:06:12   that's in part because I have all hundred and eighteen gigs of photos and [TS]

01:06:15   videos US per picture life on it and it does sound really awesome to be able to [TS]

01:06:21   buy a computer that maybe doesn't have a tremendous SSD in it yet still have [TS]

01:06:27   access to my photos as though they were there and I would choose a strategy much [TS]

01:06:31   like what you're saying market would probably leave the one I have today [TS]

01:06:34   downloading all of them in operating as a backup and then have my main machine [TS]

01:06:38   just grab whatever one's photos he spits in terms of what they're promising it [TS]

01:06:44   genuinely does sound really really good and I am very impressed by you know you [TS]

01:06:49   want some pricing John you've been very quiet your thoughts about this that's [TS]

01:06:53   what you guys were doing I think I talked about this before it like that I [TS]

01:06:58   was going to be cautious about this I didn't install any the betas I didn't [TS]

01:07:02   enable I called photo library when that was invaded iOS or anything like that I [TS]

01:07:06   just stayed away from it but when all the reviews came out for the photos that [TS]

01:07:11   I read all of them and talk to people who wrote them and ask questions and [TS]

01:07:15   investigated and the thing that made me decide to win the official version was [TS]

01:07:20   released to dive in and do it [TS]

01:07:24   important area library was the way that it does the imports if you have an [TS]

01:07:27   existing iPhoto library [TS]

01:07:29   it will I i have an example library time external 500 gig SSD the library itself [TS]

01:07:37   is around two hundred and sixty two hundred and seventy gigs I can't [TS]

01:07:43   duplicate the library still sit on the disc but the way it does it if you have [TS]

01:07:46   an existing libraries it doesn't duplicate files just makes hard links to [TS]

01:07:48   all the files which does not increase the disk space for the maddest [TS]

01:07:53   references them and once you do that once you do a full import a to go faster [TS]

01:07:57   because it's not actually helping to under 60 gigs memory is making my dick [TS]

01:08:00   hard links and writing much admitted it ever end be after you do that you've got [TS]

01:08:05   your iPhoto library still completely unmodified you could launch iPhoto and [TS]

01:08:09   it would still be right there and you got your photos library which in the [TS]

01:08:12   beginning is an exact copy of your iPhoto library with some targeted a [TS]

01:08:17   little bit and then if you start using photos you are you also a diverse the [TS]

01:08:23   photos library will start changing LED new photos to you make modifications [TS]

01:08:26   those modifications that won't be reflected in the iPhoto library if I was [TS]

01:08:29   to go back in time and modify picture 3 years ago I would get a private copy its [TS]

01:08:35   copy on write our get a private copying the thought was like so the way this is [TS]

01:08:39   done the fact that I don't have to double my desk space that I can start [TS]

01:08:42   from where it left off tonight photos and that I could essentially bail at any [TS]

01:08:46   time just sort of I would like export the photos that I imported into the [TS]

01:08:51   photos out after the transfer process and then throw it photos library and [TS]

01:08:56   then just very important iPod according to go back but what Casey doesn't have [TS]

01:09:00   the above but I have to deal with is the idea that [TS]

01:09:03   you know I thought was gone I thought is dead I use iPhoto since its introduction [TS]

01:09:08   as my way to deal with photos of the couple of brief side trips in [TS]

01:09:11   temperature when it could legally drive out a library and stuff like that but [TS]

01:09:15   I've investment in this in this program and meditate and everything and if it's [TS]

01:09:21   dead I need to get on the thing that that is going to replace it and sooner [TS]

01:09:25   is better than later and I have a lot of problems live though it's just that it [TS]

01:09:29   is really on its last legs I was hoping that photos but solve these problems for [TS]

01:09:33   me so I did the import it was a little bit weird because what initially does [TS]

01:09:37   that wants to make a new photos library and wants to make it am i mean that's no [TS]

01:09:42   good because his parents get annual SSD in it so I had to dissuade it from you [TS]

01:09:48   know I had to make it open a new library to eat a little library that it made and [TS]

01:09:52   then I had to make a V the second library I give unto the Option key down [TS]

01:09:56   to pick a different library had to make that the quote-unquote system library [TS]

01:09:58   because if we don't do that in all of your photo stream stuff will not go into [TS]

01:10:02   the system libraries over a little while I have like Max LeBron external drive [TS]

01:10:06   but that the system library was the new little empty one has broken strings are [TS]

01:10:09   going so I was a little bit confusing I'm not using you like I i cant figure [TS]

01:10:14   out what was going on but I figure if someone else was using as they would be [TS]

01:10:17   confused about why they're not getting anywhere maybe they want to multiple [TS]

01:10:20   drives but bottom line is I can get to the point where I want it I imported my [TS]

01:10:24   library which took a really really really long time way longer than I [TS]

01:10:27   thought you take it since it's not actually copying the data and during its [TS]

01:10:32   like while you wait why not take a photo tour of the photos application and [TS]

01:10:36   there's no way in hell I was looking at things take a tour of the both like I'm [TS]

01:10:38   not touching the computer until he's done anything to protect the program I [TS]

01:10:44   don't know what kind of slideshow introduction thing is gonna do but that [TS]

01:10:47   the last thing I want is that the crash the Apennines Italy import so did you [TS]

01:10:51   have any other windows just let it sit there and took it just a tremendous [TS]

01:10:55   amount of time this is not uploading the iCloud forgiving others just merely like [TS]

01:10:59   importing my photos liberals like the sixties seven thousand photos or [TS]

01:11:03   something [TS]

01:11:04   260 270 gigs Arison videos mixed in there but not too many [TS]

01:11:09   so I let it do all that and then the next thing was like if there's settings [TS]

01:11:14   that you can say do you want me to keep all the photos on your Mac yes I [TS]

01:11:18   definitely did was the whole point like I want them to be there to get backed up [TS]

01:11:21   and all those stuff the interesting thing that is the time machine I think [TS]

01:11:26   was smart enough not to like time she knows that there are links understands [TS]

01:11:30   them ever so it does not as a time machine like oh my goodness I have two [TS]

01:11:33   hundred and sixty new gigs to backup no it doesn't it doesn't have it just you [TS]

01:11:37   know that you space on my desk did not go up by that much just had like a [TS]

01:11:42   little database and meditate and stuff and then the photos as they were so Time [TS]

01:11:46   Machine backup caught up pretty quickly and turn on the iCloud thing of course I [TS]

01:11:52   had to buy market storage also about storage pressing a little bit I did that [TS]

01:11:56   about to start at the most opportune about 500 gigs of storage can upload and [TS]

01:12:02   the uploading a weird like it shows the progress bar in the Preferences window [TS]

01:12:06   but every time I launch the Preferences window the progressbar started from zero [TS]

01:12:09   kind of and the other that wasn't in the the Preferences window said uploading [TS]

01:12:14   you know X thousand photos in the beginning it said uploading $67,000 in [TS]

01:12:18   the number would go down there was uploading 49,000 weird way to show [TS]

01:12:23   progress I can understand what it's getting out but what's wrong with a [TS]

01:12:26   progress bar guys like you know if you didn't know the desire to 60,000 you [TS]

01:12:30   wouldn't know you have done when it's uploading 30,000 anyway [TS]

01:12:33   took like two days up to it let all my photos it was not using all my [TS]

01:12:37   connection in this has been a big complaint with people who have smaller [TS]

01:12:41   upload pipes that the photos apple just use as much upload bandwidth as you have [TS]

01:12:46   in like if you saturate you upload bandwidth it makes your experience doing [TS]

01:12:50   anything else really miserable there is an option preferences to say stop [TS]

01:12:54   uploading like pause for a day is the only button but like that's not a great [TS]

01:12:59   option if it's noon and i think is destroying your blood type need to pause [TS]

01:13:02   for a day all you've done is scheduled for industry upload pipe tomorrow at [TS]

01:13:05   noon [TS]

01:13:06   again I don't have a problem because it was not using my entire blowpipe not [TS]

01:13:10   even closer they get like 35 make it up and it was maybe using two three or four [TS]

01:13:15   out and I guess you could take it out to go up 48 hours ago it was not even [TS]

01:13:18   sometimes it went really fast and times when slow I've heard from people who [TS]

01:13:22   have looked at the traffic going over the wire that it was uploaded directly [TS]

01:13:25   to Amazon s3 like not going to apple cider is it was going to you know [TS]

01:13:30   something s3.amazonaws.com we're just fine I don't care where the hell it is [TS]

01:13:34   like as long as it's uploaded somewhere I dunno I don't let any of the [TS]

01:13:37   implementation details for people wondering reports that but I didn't [TS]

01:13:40   check myself after uploaded everything I had to look at like what has it done to [TS]

01:13:46   my iPhoto library but a lot of time into my photo library ever talked about my [TS]

01:13:50   rating system and Mikey wording you know I keyword for people in my family I do [TS]

01:13:55   ratings is a series of filtering three stars are higher the good ones anything [TS]

01:13:59   below that is bad one star as usual should be deleted [TS]

01:14:02   very few foreign 5 stars I'm not surprised me neither the same thing I do [TS]

01:14:09   for iTunes it's more of a thresholding system like you know what are the good [TS]

01:14:14   photos if if for example we're making a counter which we do like to use this [TS]

01:14:17   website let let you make a counter with pictures your family on it right I [TS]

01:14:20   immediately go to pick up some last year three stars amor those like the good [TS]

01:14:24   ones like those are the ones even worth looking yet [TS]

01:14:27   and then the one stars Peter I could I get spaced I just go let me show you all [TS]

01:14:31   the ones stars and I'll delete them well [TS]

01:14:33   photos doesn't do that photos has favorite or not favorite favorite uses a [TS]

01:14:38   star not favored has no stars so it is a very binary filtering system just kind [TS]

01:14:42   of in keeping with our is using it like a three star is the threshold so how the [TS]

01:14:47   hell does it import my library where they're all rated well it is still has [TS]

01:14:51   keywords and it makes a one-star keyword 2001 Space star to space star those are [TS]

01:14:56   key words and it puts keywords on all my one two and three star rated ones but [TS]

01:15:01   just fine because then it still lets me sort by one two and three star but not [TS]

01:15:04   have to make a choice I could continue reading them one two and three star by [TS]

01:15:08   using the one two three four and five star keywords or I could just abandon [TS]

01:15:12   that and just go with the favoring so I've decided that I'm just going to go [TS]

01:15:15   forward to use the favoring system so I basically did was took anything that is [TS]

01:15:19   340 5 stars and put up an official photos fav on it and that's what I'm [TS]

01:15:25   gonna do going forward to leave the key word ratings on all the other ones but [TS]

01:15:29   I'm not gonna try to maintain my 125 which means I won't really have a good [TS]

01:15:33   way to I guess I could still able to one star ones one-star I wanted but you [TS]

01:15:38   should just delete them [TS]

01:15:40   yeah I mean that's what I do like there aren't really many ones are the ones [TS]

01:15:43   that means like that focuses on an eventually get deleted so does not [TS]

01:15:46   really many of them when I go through I basically all the one-star I decide to [TS]

01:15:50   upgrade one of the two wells not that bad weather so the import went ok some [TS]

01:15:56   of my smart albums didn't quite work because some of the smaller towns like [TS]

01:15:59   it doesn't have to be like nested logic like are you make a smart thing and then [TS]

01:16:04   have another thing references and other small things doesn't have like nested [TS]

01:16:06   Boolean logic is that one level of logic and so much more times didn't work [TS]

01:16:10   because the logic require that required a feature that all exhausted and I [TS]

01:16:13   thought I lost a little bit but my manual albums work to my simple smart [TS]

01:16:17   albums were reported over correctly the faces or marlys part over the keywords [TS]

01:16:21   so that went ok be uploaded went ok but here's where the river really its [TS]

01:16:27   derivatives out [TS]

01:16:29   the problem I had with iPhoto was that it was basically came down to this point [TS]

01:16:34   performance in all aspects of performance the apt took a year and a [TS]

01:16:39   day to launch you launch it is also keep in mind this is a very fast external SSD [TS]

01:16:44   connected with FireWire 800 or an internal SSD didn't matter took forever [TS]

01:16:49   to launch you sit there and say it's been there for a long time I was going [TS]

01:16:53   to come back later once it launched pretty much everything you did in the [TS]

01:16:56   APIs slow growing with slow the thing I'm most commonly do is busily plug in [TS]

01:17:01   the camera import photos after import photos I want to go through them and [TS]

01:17:06   rate them in keyword them whatever basically just to look at them go to [TS]

01:17:10   full screen mode that'll be easier on the application full screen out to [TS]

01:17:13   everybody else use the arrow key to advance from 140 to the next use [TS]

01:17:17   keyboard shortcuts to put to rate them and stuff like that that workflow right [TS]

01:17:22   our o Mandar to rotate command 23 command for to rate right arrow was just [TS]

01:17:29   so incredibly sluggish like super slow going into full screen mode was slow [TS]

01:17:33   getting the right out to go to the next photo seemed like it took a seven second [TS]

01:17:36   delay sometimes it's like what are you even doing sometimes a photo [TS]

01:17:39   accompanying still blurry and then we put in the full res super slow like ever [TS]

01:17:43   insisted his greatest should be way faster keyword being like I do [TS]

01:17:47   commander one command took me three or you can only keyword if you are in full [TS]

01:17:50   screen mode yet the keyword palette available they need a single key strokes [TS]

01:17:53   of like after family and like it's like a bunch of photos you click one shift [TS]

01:17:58   click on another hit after family and like three seconds later you I will [TS]

01:18:02   catch up with you know you should look like this range of low key word think [TS]

01:18:06   flash on the screen just felt like molasses so this is what I was hoping [TS]

01:18:10   for a sign from about stuff I was hoping that it would help the workflow of like [TS]

01:18:14   the things that I do import photos go through them rate them keyword them or [TS]

01:18:18   just go through them and browse and I guess rolling but I do a little bit less [TS]

01:18:22   growing so [TS]

01:18:24   I set everything up and photos and one of the first things I did was grab a [TS]

01:18:28   little scroll bar and scroll up and down that works alright 67,000 photos you [TS]

01:18:33   don't expect it to be that fast even mind this is a 2011 MacBook Air with [TS]

01:18:36   four gigs of ram that probably doesn't help ya but but it did alright like I'm [TS]

01:18:42   willing to give it to give it a pass for like things that I think that a lack of [TS]

01:18:46   RAM you know explains so important some photos into it and the importing was a [TS]

01:18:53   little bit weird and confusing and the UI is not great like you know to bring [TS]

01:18:56   the sidebar back to see my camera but it mounted as a no name card thing and [TS]

01:19:01   whatever like it was difficult for me to find some stuff it's a very sparse here [TS]

01:19:04   I but it's a 1.0 imported all the photos go into full screen mode and then just [TS]

01:19:09   are trying to write error rate keyword right our he were still slow and I don't [TS]

01:19:14   understand this and why it's so slow I'm just one photo on the screen [TS]

01:19:17   I'm gonna hit the right arrow key I wanted to show me the next photo I don't [TS]

01:19:21   need you to keep every single one of my photos in memory I don't think the lack [TS]

01:19:24   of RAM is making that slow but something is and I just wanted to be snappy and I [TS]

01:19:29   assume that it is snappy if you have 10 photos are a thousand or even ten [TS]

01:19:33   thousand I don't know where the threshold is where does that just starts [TS]

01:19:37   to fall down but whatever it is I'm past it so is it worse than I thought oh no [TS]

01:19:41   it's not worse than I thought in terms of performance is probably a little bit [TS]

01:19:44   better [TS]

01:19:44   launching still takes a long time doing all the actions that I was describing [TS]

01:19:48   talking long time maybe maybe keyword is actually slower and photos then it was [TS]

01:19:52   you know click on photo shift click on to the next one label for you know my [TS]

01:19:57   kid's name or whatever maybe that's actually slower and photos but its [TS]

01:20:00   closest so I did not get the big performance boost that I was hoping [TS]

01:20:04   again this is a 1.0 maybe maybe it's a rambling and maybe I should I tried on [TS]

01:20:10   my Mac the 16 gigs of ram [TS]

01:20:11   see if it doesn't get better so that aspect of it is kind of a while but I [TS]

01:20:16   feel relatively ok with the safety of the things again because my entire floor [TS]

01:20:20   library still there still being backed up and I thought as library slowly [TS]

01:20:23   diverging from it I have for now not been deleting the camera the pictures [TS]

01:20:27   off my camera when I import them so I have like yet another backup catcher fee [TS]

01:20:31   I still have my life a library and I couldn't be imported everything from my [TS]

01:20:35   camera a certain point my car to my camera will fill up so after that but [TS]

01:20:39   you know I'd say so far so ok and the cloud sync stuff that fell apart the [TS]

01:20:48   people complain about so this this is on my computer says the photo computer that [TS]

01:20:52   forget the next big problem which is like they haven't really solve the [TS]

01:20:55   problem because the larger problem is we have photos that belong to our family [TS]

01:20:59   67,000 photos they're not my photos that my wife's notice that my children so is [TS]

01:21:04   there our photos collectively we have a family set up in you know the Apple [TS]

01:21:08   iCloud family thing or whatever but to do this photo thing we have to pick an [TS]

01:21:13   Apple ID so it's my wife's out but I D her she signed into her body and her [TS]

01:21:18   phone obviously cuz it's her phone and this is her computer and she logged into [TS]

01:21:22   her account so when we imported this thing to turn the microphone library the [TS]

01:21:25   500 gigs of storage that's her storied right which means on her phone she has [TS]

01:21:30   access to all $67,000 which is amazing right now obviously not all on the phone [TS]

01:21:33   that does all the stories that the idea but it's pretty amazing that you can you [TS]

01:21:36   know in theory scroll back to you know the early two thousands of the nineties [TS]

01:21:40   and tapping a photo and eventually will download and you can see it love it [TS]

01:21:43   great right I can't see any of those photos in my phone even though they're [TS]

01:21:46   just too much my photos as her photos right there is no way to sort of share [TS]

01:21:52   the entire labor at the family now there is a family section or anything you put [TS]

01:21:55   in that album is share with anybody in your family group but there's no way to [TS]

01:21:59   automatically share the entire library you have to manually add things stuff to [TS]

01:22:03   the family collection of course you can make a shared photo stream and sign up [TS]

01:22:05   individual people do but there's no way to basically say this is the family's [TS]

01:22:09   photo library I want everyone to see it Apple has not solved that problem either [TS]

01:22:13   tackle the big only made it so that you can share substitute photos manually [TS]

01:22:16   with different groups of people which is grade [TS]

01:22:18   good you can do that we use that all time to share pictures or relatives but [TS]

01:22:21   it's not like I'm going to manually drag every every single photo my library to [TS]

01:22:26   the family thing in the main drag of a new thing into their because I never [TS]

01:22:29   have I have my own my photo library on my Mac which has nothing in it and I my [TS]

01:22:34   phone is open if I take a picture of my phone it shows up in my photo lab not in [TS]

01:22:38   the family one is not working the way we want to work and sexually I want there [TS]

01:22:42   to be one big pool of those that belong to the family and maybe separate pools [TS]

01:22:45   for individuals that mention the kids along their own separate pools want to [TS]

01:22:48   mingle cars but for my wife and I i think we are for us to share one big [TS]

01:22:53   pool so it's kind of a shame that I don't have access to all of our family [TS]

01:22:57   photos on my phone and she does but the flip side of that is she has access to [TS]

01:23:01   all of our photos on her phone which means when she brings up the photo [TS]

01:23:04   picker in any iOS application 10 to 15 second way before devoting picture comes [TS]

01:23:09   up so it's not just the nitrided Apple Mail I tried into a terrific it is not a [TS]

01:23:14   pre-application thing you you bring up the photo picker time ten fifteen [TS]

01:23:18   seconds every time [TS]

01:23:20   second time takes us a long one that comes up a little slow but you know [TS]

01:23:25   again it's amazing you have access to 67,000 photos but it's you know we are [TS]

01:23:30   at the limits of what this thing can handle it's kind of amazing that it does [TS]

01:23:33   it and doesn't crash run the other hand it's like if you're going to do this I [TS]

01:23:38   don't know what you can do maybe just like only allowed to put a picture see [TS]

01:23:41   the last four or five years and then have it like I don't know what you have [TS]

01:23:44   to do to make that picture come up sooner like I understand the problems [TS]

01:23:48   inherent in this but it is not a great experience and I'll be honest about the [TS]

01:23:53   cloud syncing here is it the market was talking about well you know get another [TS]

01:23:55   Mac added to your cloud syncing have to keep all your photos but then and your [TS]

01:23:59   your main smaller Mac have just optimized storage not keep all of them [TS]

01:24:03   they're just as rate is not a backup iCloud voters think it's not a backup [TS]

01:24:08   because if something if you do something bad those changes will rapidly cascade [TS]

01:24:13   to all your servers that are doing this cloud sync and it will dutifully delete [TS]

01:24:16   everything before you deleted from like if you accidentally huge amount of [TS]

01:24:19   photos it will delete them everywhere [TS]

01:24:21   thought it was leading off your Mac Mac Mini would probably before you can race [TS]

01:24:25   into a room in Yankee fan of academic many people to lead to help a lot of [TS]

01:24:29   those pictures [TS]

01:24:30   so I think it's not a backup you need actual backups and now you need actual [TS]

01:24:36   backups you need back ups like Time Machine backups that the don't just to [TS]

01:24:41   disclose any discounts to just did you know and clawed back some of it keeps [TS]

01:24:44   older versions of things goes it is very easy to have a catastrophic cloud thing [TS]

01:24:49   that goes wrong that causes a runaway you know that's ahead the bug you have [TS]

01:24:53   caused a runaway deletion of thousands of photos and that deletion will sink if [TS]

01:24:57   Apple you know that with his job well we'll sync all your devices everywhere [TS]

01:25:01   before you can do anything about it and if you don't notice and like 15 minutes [TS]

01:25:05   later your backup systems run automatically back up everything and [TS]

01:25:09   your backups are in like incremental data backups like if you have at the [TS]

01:25:13   super duper clone clone would delete your drive as it exists now with the [TS]

01:25:17   deleted photos in those photos will be done so in this cloud connected world [TS]

01:25:21   you have to be very aware of what kind of data loss changes will automatically [TS]

01:25:26   be pushed out all my quote unquote backups I'm sorry very leery of that and [TS]

01:25:32   I'm really trying to keep that in mind when I may have a backup strategy and I [TS]

01:25:38   have to admit part of my backup strategy is I'm never going to leave my photo [TS]

01:25:41   library like it will always be there are probably never modify those things at [TS]

01:25:45   the very least all those photos will be you know a safe they could possibly be [TS]

01:25:49   sitting on each of us plus we have no idea what the contents and I try and [TS]

01:25:54   speaking of the hard links I tried desperately not to think about the [TS]

01:25:57   implementation of our things which they go read my post and articles about it [TS]

01:26:02   like hard links or grafted on dangerous plus and the way it does it is it puts a [TS]

01:26:07   special filing a special hidden directory and there's only one of those [TS]

01:26:10   directories and if you know you may not know much about file systems but sort of [TS]

01:26:15   gut feeling if you make a single directory and you just keep putting [TS]

01:26:19   files in there at a certain point hundreds of files thousands of miles how [TS]

01:26:23   many files can you put in a single director not nested in subfolder they [TS]

01:26:26   just flat in a single directory before the process yes he uses be treason [TS]

01:26:30   B-plus trees or whatever that's what it's doing there's a hidden directory [TS]

01:26:34   and in the hidden directories a single file for every hard link on your desk no [TS]

01:26:38   wonder your photos at Pacific slower than I mean just about time [TS]

01:26:41   in the meantime machine just told hard links but you know photos [TS]

01:26:45   yeah so there is Richard III have twenties yeah I i've 26,000 photos so [TS]

01:26:52   bad about a half to a third of what you have but my performance is amazing it [TS]

01:26:57   flies I didn't do it and I photo imports law because I was using Lightroom before [TS]

01:27:02   so I was i I literally I copied my directory is about the night sky copy [TS]

01:27:09   them over the next two to back it up to kinda like save it and then I just copy [TS]

01:27:15   them all into into new phone that Bentley the originals so it has it has [TS]

01:27:19   things arranged the way it wants them arranged yeah it's not once you make the [TS]

01:27:24   hard think that's fine I'm just like I'm leery of having that many files in a [TS]

01:27:27   single director I don't think the fact that I have a bunch of hard links is [TS]

01:27:30   causing my performance problems because once you make them like reading one [TS]

01:27:33   files the same as reading other for any other file that's just the sort of [TS]

01:27:36   linking one set of data to another it's done on a per file basis especially [TS]

01:27:40   since like the reading the files on disk when scrolling through them or whatever [TS]

01:27:44   its [TS]

01:27:44   thumbnail the river creating databases doing like once it's up and running I [TS]

01:27:48   think the difference we're experiencing has to do with two things one your [TS]

01:27:51   computer is way faster than mine and to you have waived your photos so it's kind [TS]

01:27:55   of a fun experiment to triple triple the size your library and see how that [TS]

01:28:00   performs you know like I do they really think there is a threshold is it but I [TS]

01:28:03   thought that definitely was I hope it's fine for many many years and want to [TS]

01:28:07   start pushing up into maybe was around the mid forties maybe into the fifties [TS]

01:28:11   it started to be like like that's it you know you still did the job that every [TS]

01:28:17   operation and like I'm more picky about this than most people like I don't wanna [TS]

01:28:22   wait I have told the story many times of like when I had my original Mac and the [TS]

01:28:28   mac plus magazine stuff that I would use the computer and you do things like [TS]

01:28:32   double cup holder in the Finder never do this animation shows like The the [TS]

01:28:36   outline of the new window that's going to open expanding into place right [TS]

01:28:39   same thing with dialog boxes and stuff like that [TS]

01:28:42   I would have the cursor weeding on the pet section of the strain where I knew [TS]

01:28:48   that the close box or the OK button or the next fall 2001 and was eventually [TS]

01:28:52   going to appear when I think finish redrawing and I know how much of it [TS]

01:28:56   needed to be drawn before I can click and click register in the into the [TS]

01:28:59   window that's about to appear like it just felt like I was waiting forever for [TS]

01:29:04   everything that happens like draw your stuff ok drawing drawing drawing just [TS]

01:29:09   another is drawn I can move the mouse an exhibition ok when the dialogue like [TS]

01:29:13   that's my experience using computer and hasn't changed much that I gotten older [TS]

01:29:17   I've gotten more cranky about it and like it's like you're showing a series [TS]

01:29:22   of pictures you have phenomenal computing power compared to the computer [TS]

01:29:26   that uses a kid I just wanted the right arrow key and I want you to show me the [TS]

01:29:30   next picture immediately at full res as soon as I hit the key I don't think I'm [TS]

01:29:34   asking for a lot [TS]

01:29:36   its full screen mode there's only one picture on the screen at once there is [TS]

01:29:39   not a giant greeted sixty thousand photos it is full screen one picture hit [TS]

01:29:43   the next arrow show me the next picture can I add a rating can add a keyword do [TS]

01:29:48   that immediately give me some visual feedback that has been done I don't [TS]

01:29:52   maybe regimented database in a seng thread like I don't whatever it is [TS]

01:29:57   that's making it slow it's making me said I have some hope that you know [TS]

01:30:01   computer hardware will get faster faster than my photo library grows and you know [TS]

01:30:07   as the kids get older you take your pictures of them and everything but I'm [TS]

01:30:10   never going to delete many more of these pictures like most of the month stars [TS]

01:30:13   are gone so thinking but I'm to go to college I'm gonna have a six digit [TS]

01:30:18   number of photos and I really hope Apple software can keep up with it and by the [TS]

01:30:22   way I this is a perfect example of a very very common task that people do on [TS]

01:30:28   their computers that will kill it laptop's battery because this is using [TS]

01:30:33   tons of resources you're reading tons of little files off the discs the face [TS]

01:30:38   recognition thing running the background that alone will destroy it yet and I [TS]

01:30:41   mentioned you know all the resizing operations of thousands of photos I mean [TS]

01:30:45   that's that's a big computational job and if you're if your breasts and your [TS]

01:30:49   photos and applying some adjustments here and there even just just browsing [TS]

01:30:53   them full size [TS]

01:30:54   importing [TS]

01:30:55   a lot like a lot of up-front work especially with the import like that's [TS]

01:30:59   why I give it a chance like let's settle down it did the import but it do all the [TS]

01:31:03   faces let it make a thumbnail like I feel like you should be able to get the [TS]

01:31:06   library to a steady state like I'm not adding any photos I have not added any [TS]

01:31:10   photos library for a week [TS]

01:31:11   gap has been running like it's the only app running on the system is anything in [TS]

01:31:15   it fast and the answer is no it's not it's just not forget about a new photos [TS]

01:31:19   obviously every time you add nude photos go to parse the mall can make some nails [TS]

01:31:22   it's gotta read the metadata put into its databases gotta do the face [TS]

01:31:25   recognition like I understand that there was going to be grinding away with doing [TS]

01:31:28   that things are going to be slow but I feel like in a steady state operation [TS]

01:31:32   should be fast and it just not with the library my size on my particular [TS]

01:31:36   hardware which is 2011 MacBook Air with four gigs RAM yeah i mean that that [TS]

01:31:40   could be a big part of the problem in that that's a great answer to that [TS]

01:31:43   question but that that might be a big part of the problem I mean I hope that [TS]

01:31:47   the SSDs are being bought an external SSD you know these are fast as I sees [TS]

01:31:52   the internal one is not great but like you know forget about on spinning disco [TS]

01:31:56   just to be useless our final budget this week is Jack threads Jack threads offers [TS]

01:32:40   you at an incredible value that she started out as a flash sale site as [TS]

01:33:20   anything better about the shopping experience it was easy to find stuff [TS]

01:33:23   easy to browse check out with you every part of it was easy so go check it out [TS]

01:33:28   go to Jack threads dot com slash tech to see this for yourself that's jacked com [TS]

01:33:46   they have an app for iOS and Android so once again go to jack the Reds dot com [TS]

01:33:52   slash tech and use coupon code ATP for 15% off your order thanks let the jacket [TS]

01:33:58   for sponsoring jak teraz elevated style every day this is a little bit of [TS]

01:34:04   homework that one of us did but which would you like to tell us that person [TS]

01:34:13   about pricing photos as compared to Dropbox and whatever else that we've [TS]

01:34:19   looked at so there's nothing about those photos solution they you know if you [TS]

01:34:23   want to use their cloud backup and you don't have to buy the way you can just [TS]

01:34:26   have them on your local disk and it works like iPhoto you can do that to pay [TS]

01:34:30   extra money for whatever just great i'm glad they gave it up a part of the [TS]

01:34:33   reason I was doing it as I wanted to do the online option and to do that you [TS]

01:34:36   have to buy storage and so you get five gigs free with an iCloud with an Apple [TS]

01:34:40   ID right you can get 20 gigs dollar-a-month 200 gigs for $4 a month [TS]

01:34:46   500 extra $10 a month and a terabyte for $20 a month and those prices are vastly [TS]

01:34:52   improved over what they used to be but unfortunately the rest of the [TS]

01:34:55   competition is way better so dropouts about half the price [TS]

01:34:59   it'll give you a terabyte for 10 bucks instead of half a terabyte for 10 bucks [TS]

01:35:03   like Apple products only gives you two gigs for free but you can refer people [TS]

01:35:06   to get a little bit there whatever [TS]

01:35:08   Amazon Cloud Drive gives you unlimited photos and five you buy the video for [TS]

01:35:14   $12 a year so forget about a month unlimited photos $12 a year plus five [TS]

01:35:20   games videos you can have unlimited everything unlimited photos and [TS]

01:35:23   unlimited video for $60 yeah I guess it's kind of good when s3 is your thing [TS]

01:35:27   and you have to pay AmazonFresh 3 because you are amazon also be fair [TS]

01:35:30   there probably aren't operating at a massive profit margin debt that family [TS]

01:35:34   anyway but whatever Amazon Cloud Drive ridiculously less expensive Microsoft [TS]

01:35:38   one drive gives you 15 gigs for free with just three times when the [TS]

01:35:41   application for 300 gigs for two dollars a month [TS]

01:35:44   200 gigs for $4 a month is exactly matches Apple one terabyte for $7 a [TS]

01:35:50   month so seven dollars versus twenty so that their pricing is around about 80 in [TS]

01:35:54   the 200 degrees the same as apples but when you go to one terabyte $7 a month [TS]

01:35:58   for $20 a month Microsoft is definitely going there and Katie just put [TS]

01:36:02   information or picture life which is 25 gigs are $5 month $110 a month and [TS]

01:36:07   unlimited 4:15 so I get another unlimited thing Amazon gives you [TS]

01:36:11   unlimited way cheaper than Apple picture like gives you unlimited also cheaper [TS]

01:36:14   that now what are you getting with the Apple thing like Marco said integration [TS]

01:36:18   with all your iOS devices [TS]

01:36:20   it's the only solution that I'm aware of ted has complete integration with the [TS]

01:36:25   actual Apple photo library lots of things have their own iOS app or [TS]

01:36:29   whatever and I guess with you know sharing extensions you get to the stuff [TS]

01:36:33   but so many iOS apps bring up a picture picture of the pic from your photo [TS]

01:36:38   library which is the Apple photo library so you are paying for the integration [TS]

01:36:42   that Apple Store expressing is not not that great but I would say you know [TS]

01:36:47   based on like what it is where is it and created how its integrated how it's [TS]

01:36:52   presented to you I would say you're not gonna be seeing a lot of people doing [TS]

01:36:56   comparison shopping you're not going to be seeing let know that that's true I [TS]

01:36:59   just like the ones that really I think are are hurt Apple's competitiveness [TS]

01:37:04   especially after they just change the prices [TS]

01:37:06   the ones that hurt of the unlimited ones because that's like a different ballgame [TS]

01:37:09   like we're no longer haggling over the price I know you're not going to compare [TS]

01:37:12   but knowing that there are [TS]

01:37:14   unlimited stuff out there that's like well these are a bunch of pricing tiers [TS]

01:37:19   but I've heard one of them is unlimited and unlimited for you know twenty [TS]

01:37:22   dollars a month versus twelve dollars a year one is a limited one is not the [TS]

01:37:27   only one of the cheaper one that's really got hurt so I feel like Apple's [TS]

01:37:31   still needs to adjust its prices you're right people are going to comparison [TS]

01:37:34   shop for it but they're going to be cranky when they realized especially if [TS]

01:37:38   they're upgrading and they have like a two hundred and one gig library and they [TS]

01:37:41   realize it a $10 a month like that's more than I Netflix way to second right [TS]

01:37:45   you get the integration is nice I think people should still definitely do it i [TS]

01:37:48   think is the best easiest point-and-shoots people's photos [TS]

01:37:51   especially if you don't have a lot of them but I really as the performance was [TS]

01:37:55   better and I hope that Apple keeps up the pricing and feels feel some pressure [TS]

01:38:00   to be competitive because right now they're not particularly competitive on [TS]

01:38:03   stories pricing yeah but at the same time it's it's within the realm of [TS]

01:38:08   reason and you know it depends again it depends a lot of areas because of the [TS]

01:38:13   tiered system like the 2012 example you know you're gonna pay for 500 if you [TS]

01:38:18   need 2010 I need I need like two hundred and eighty so I'm paying for 500 and [TS]

01:38:23   even like the nickel and diming like their tears or spread like everyone else [TS]

01:38:26   is just like small and then one terabyte or unlimited like you know like picture [TS]

01:38:31   life 25 100 unlimited Microsoft 1500 201 terabyte like that you know that Apple [TS]

01:38:37   have a smoother gradation but it's like one terabyte is basically any reasonable [TS]

01:38:42   person type thing but paying $20 a month like $15 a month unlimited texts like I [TS]

01:38:49   don't think it makes the day go towards the bottom line is I would pay double [TS]

01:38:52   D's prices for storage if it had two things the ability to handle my library [TS]

01:38:57   with much better performance and the ability to share photos on my family and [TS]

01:39:01   the way they want because it frustrates me that only my wife has access to all [TS]

01:39:05   of our photos of her phone it I don't have them on my phone and I will never [TS]

01:39:08   have the iPhone because Apple has no solution for that [TS]

01:39:10   you know I must be going to make a giant share and we're gonna drag everything [TS]

01:39:14   family library now imagine they're probably not performed particularly well [TS]

01:39:19   so I'm not even gonna try that well we'll see I mean it was only wasn't only [TS]

01:39:22   last year that they infuse family plans was just last year yeah I mean that's [TS]

01:39:26   why the features they're like it's confusing people I see like I did make [TS]

01:39:29   an album called family what the hell is this anything you put in that album is [TS]

01:39:33   automatically appears in the photo libraries people who are in your family [TS]

01:39:37   like you know in the family that you set up that you have you can read about the [TS]

01:39:42   whole family thing like I love that you could have a family I like they've added [TS]

01:39:45   features the habit of wearing a sudden it just doesn't quite work the way that [TS]

01:39:48   I wanted to work with my family I don't think the way I want it should be the [TS]

01:39:51   default or like the only way to work with it but this particular way i think [TS]

01:39:54   is a common way we're like the moment the dad want to see all the photos and [TS]

01:39:59   every part of they take they both want to go into this library like thats I [TS]

01:40:03   think that the reasonable way to handle photos as it stands now any photo my [TS]

01:40:08   wife takes with our phone goes into our family for elaborate any further that I [TS]

01:40:11   think my phone is stranded in this weird island over an actor on that somehow get [TS]

01:40:15   it over there and I don't have access to any of the photos that she takes or any [TS]

01:40:18   of the photos in her library unless you manually drag them into the shared thing [TS]

01:40:21   that we shared family library or a photo to share it is almost as though every I [TS]

01:40:27   device is an island no I like the nile into the title I believe so but Casey [TS]

01:40:36   will put into the show notes on this computer drives out the hottest thing [TS]

01:40:41   that and I apologize if you've heard some claiming and whatnot in the [TS]

01:40:45   background but early that in yet you might as well [TS]

01:40:48   real-time follow-up I just poured half a glass of water on errands MacBook Air oh [TS]

01:40:53   no it's herds yes because it's one without the screaming fans so the good [TS]

01:40:59   news is that wasn't so does so hopefully this will last long enough to finish the [TS]

01:41:03   episode and god knows what the hell out there [TS]

01:41:05   Apple note has been tampered with the little watery things inside right now [TS]

01:41:09   our main colour [TS]

01:41:11   they do you were just talking about your gonna replace yours like imminently it [TS]

01:41:14   man that's terrible it's about time not for that one though right now but it's [TS]

01:41:21   about time that I've done this isn't that would like only a year old [TS]

01:41:24   yeah pretty much I bought this mostly because she was using my ancient poly [TS]

01:41:30   book by steven hack it and sorry I'm multitasking here and drying off my desk [TS]

01:41:35   I was there she sees my engine poly book which wasn't really working anymore and [TS]

01:41:40   and so I got this MacBook Air then started to commandeer it for the show's [TS]

01:41:45   because it doesn't have a screaming fans on like every other computer I have so [TS]

01:41:50   yes and I accidentally just don't like a third of what it what is it normal beer [TS]

01:41:56   glass appoint alright well it's probably you probably about four to five ounces [TS]

01:42:02   of water so I immediately flipped upside down so hopefully that was some of the [TS]

01:42:07   clattering you've heard but yeah we'll see what happens [TS]

01:42:10   guaranteed to kill you have no idea and that'll be deserved the water in tonight [TS]

01:42:16   your computer [TS]

01:42:17   her computer oh yeah I mean thankfully I am I am the Tina of this relationship [TS]

01:42:21   title in so far as I am the keeper of all of the data but yeah this is not [TS]

01:42:28   this is no point oh well you have a backup solution I see ya heard this [TS]

01:42:31   thing is also backed up to the Synology I thought last I looked and freight to [TS]

01:42:35   touch anything you want to verify that tonight does it usually way this works [TS]

01:42:40   is it will work fine for a little while and then we'll start getting flaky and [TS]

01:42:44   we're then it'll stop that usually happen over the span of days is no good [TS]

01:42:52   no good kids no good at all I feel bad laughing it's it's really uncomfortable [TS]

01:42:59   unfortunate I'm just mopping up all the water from my desk luckily it was with [TS]

01:43:05   such force that hopefully only but announcer so actually landed on the [TS]

01:43:09   keyboard but I should take a picture of the pile of paper towels that I have now [TS]

01:43:14   put on the floor so where is your drink in relation to computer this was even [TS]

01:43:19   possible [TS]

01:43:20   John ever feel like this is this is the key to if you do not want to spill [TS]

01:43:25   liquid on your computer here is the key to doing it [TS]

01:43:28   do not have a vice illiquid anywhere that if it tips over the water can get [TS]

01:43:32   you always get the idea John where were you hit where were you twenty minutes [TS]

01:43:35   ago I have a glass next to me right now i i reach out and take things from it [TS]

01:43:40   all time during the body guess it is on a lower level than my desk and if there [TS]

01:43:44   is no way that the water could get you to the top of my desk our way over to my [TS]

01:43:48   Mac Pro which is on the floor [TS]

01:43:50   far away from it like you did there is not enough water for that DEP an [TS]

01:43:53   alternate solution is to either use a desktop or when using a laptop have a [TS]

01:43:58   standard something so that way if water covers your whole desk it doesn't really [TS]

01:44:02   know it might kill a mouse or keyboard maybe it's still splashed onto the [TS]

01:44:05   keyboard like if the height of your cup is higher than the thing on the stand is [TS]

01:44:09   closed so if I had an extra hand I would take a picture of myself talking into [TS]

01:44:15   the microphone whilst holding that laptop upside down so hopefully any [TS]

01:44:18   water and putting it off now [TS]

01:44:21   now I'm putting myself office such a thing or possible if there if it was [TS]

01:44:25   possible you be the person to figure out how to do it this has not been my [TS]

01:44:29   evening kids this terrible so what do you think about the total price what are [TS]

01:44:36   we talking about this is not able to do it myself kids did it to myself let's [TS]

01:44:44   wrap up yeah I think we should fast forward to the after show as quickly as [TS]

01:44:48   possible sale whenever we end there's a prayer that you can get my side of the [TS]

01:44:52   recording will thanks a lot [TS]

01:44:54   23 sponsors this week cards against humanity Squarespace and Jack threads [TS]

01:44:58   and we will see you next week [TS]

01:45:01   now the show they didn't even mean to begin accidental accidental [TS]

01:45:18   al and Markel [TS]

01:46:01   know you're probably okay for the next few minutes at least I would I would [TS]

01:46:09   start making yourself that you're gonna have to possibly be ok with replacing [TS]

01:46:16   this computer in the next month or two [TS]

01:46:18   possibly next week but the next month or two about how much water we're talking [TS]

01:46:24   about here I don't know it was again it was a pint glass that I had I think it [TS]

01:46:29   was about two-thirds empty or 130 it did that's a statement about my point of [TS]

01:46:34   view isn't it it was two-thirds empty it was one third of all is what I meant to [TS]

01:46:38   say and I walked in so it kind of the glass was immediately to the right of [TS]

01:46:47   the computer I'm sorry John and the glass kind of flu on top of the computer [TS]

01:46:53   which is good in this case and so I would guess between one and two ounces [TS]

01:46:58   probably spelled out directly under the keyboard part oh yeah but Marco this now [TS]

01:47:05   I'm screwed [TS]

01:47:06   the worst part about this is that you might be out some money but the second [TS]

01:47:11   worst part about this is that you're going to get email from everybody over [TS]

01:47:15   the next few days saying if only you would have done my trick here is my [TS]

01:47:19   trick that works every time or that works for me once they heard work for [TS]

01:47:22   somebody's uncle wants it you're gonna be getting everybody's near dance hits [TS]

01:47:26   and tricks of yeah well I so you didn't immediately will your script if you [TS]

01:47:30   would immediately would fix it like you're gonna hear everything from [TS]

01:47:34   everybody yep I can hardly wait [TS]

01:47:41   that's cold but actually did he didn't fix it did you know that I think you [TS]

01:47:51   underscore Chris for that extremely useful piece of information hey this is [TS]

01:47:54   all caps mind you hate Casey here's my tip don't spill your effing drink on [TS]

01:47:59   your computer [TS]

01:48:00   oh I didn't realize that was the idea but oh well thank you so very much I [TS]

01:48:06   will take that into consideration and under consideration in the future [TS]

01:48:11   this week is gonna suck what you mean shouldn't be that hard to try to meet [TS]

01:48:14   version is a pretty dry climate right totally not a lot of humidity there now [TS]

01:48:18   not a bit better than innovation they could bring to the netbook 1 1.5 or [TS]

01:48:26   whatever like as the you know we see the inside as he appears mostly just battery [TS]

01:48:30   in an ever-shrinking part through the computer probably come to the watch [TS]

01:48:36   first but that part that is the computer as it gets smaller and smaller it starts [TS]

01:48:40   to become feasible to sort of especially if their families that's been feasible [TS]

01:48:43   to in case that in something right [TS]

01:48:46   yeah you know have the heat transferred out to the rest of the case and all the [TS]

01:48:50   stuff you do but like you can imagine making the insides of MacBook one size [TS]

01:48:56   laptop pretty water resistant I can the last one thing looks like it already [TS]

01:49:01   might be and maybe that's where to come for us as they've been you know as they [TS]

01:49:05   get smaller and smaller and smaller it starts to become feasible I think to [TS]

01:49:08   weatherproof those guts just because they're so few of them and they're less [TS]

01:49:14   sensitive like the you know especially in the family's models that you just [TS]

01:49:17   have a metal kind of like a sealed metal thing where there's contact good contact [TS]

01:49:21   and thermal transfer like why can't it be a little bit more easily into water [TS]

01:49:26   than laptops and if you look at the iPhone line though like if any any [TS]

01:49:32   amount of good reason why you should make something water resistant applies [TS]

01:49:36   way more to an iPhone than two of them to a MacBook for the most part [TS]

01:49:40   the way they do it with the phones from Samsung ones as they don't try to see [TS]

01:49:46   the inside so much as they try to seal the outside like the case make the case [TS]

01:49:51   waterproof and then don't worry about an inside but like the s1 approach in the [TS]

01:49:54   least of these diagrams the scenes like this one has always shown at like this [TS]

01:49:58   little module that itself is encased in something I think a lot more options [TS]

01:50:03   because in the phones your only option to Greeley astride to seal the outer [TS]

01:50:07   case that's tough to get that takes abuse rather than saying yeah water will [TS]

01:50:10   get inside the case but once he gets it is nothing you can do damage wise [TS]

01:50:13   because the entire got their sealed up in the only weak point where the battery [TS]

01:50:17   connection that a waterproof connector but that I think what at the cannister [TS]

01:50:21   the phone but in a laptop in a little bit of the way like we're not there yet [TS]

01:50:24   maybe three or four margins like the next time that happens at the slide that [TS]

01:50:29   says look at how dramatically smaller you made the motherboard in that time [TS]

01:50:31   then it's like right now we're getting to the point where you could actually [TS]

01:50:33   see Alice inside there and make it more with this is kind of a shame this is [TS]

01:50:39   really expensive thing you happen to still a little bit of water on it and [TS]

01:50:42   what you said Marcos totally true that people like I did in rises in like with [TS]

01:50:45   find it hard to play key and it just like the worst kind of slow motion death [TS]

01:50:49   you wish I almost wish I was just dead and wouldn't turn on anymore [TS]

01:50:52   yeah yeah it's it's it's like my heart I've had like one bad sector it's like [TS]

01:50:56   you you know it's only gonna go downhill from there but it might be a slow and [TS]

01:51:00   painful thing and yet that's that's how this is like you know maybe it'll get [TS]

01:51:04   start packing more frequently over the next month and you don't know that [TS]

01:51:08   there's no way to really know like and then now any problems any weird thing [TS]

01:51:12   that ever happened in the computer again [TS]

01:51:14   water at once like it's never gonna like trust it slowly corrupting the data on [TS]

01:51:20   the disk and nobody's Asian checks on [TS]

01:51:24   like yellow no photo from five years ago and has invisible the missing and it [TS]

01:51:31   will be blue and sparkly collar and I think everything is fine just read the [TS]

01:51:36   disc was suppose there is this what you originally wrote we have no way to know [TS]

01:51:40   what happens if this wEDC you can't go which I do not want to happen I really [TS]

01:51:48   hope you can make it someway somehow but let's suppose you can't go and they [TS]

01:51:52   released a new file system and let's go out on a really big win for many small [TS]

01:51:58   am actually and say it's a filesystem you approve of I know you'll have plenty [TS]

01:52:02   of other things to complain about but what else will you complain about like [TS]

01:52:06   what's the next lowest hanging fruit really speaking of when they replace [TS]

01:52:10   david Swanson it will happen eventually I have very dim hopes of ever replace it [TS]

01:52:14   with something that has data integrity I think they're much more likely to go for [TS]

01:52:18   the other features like performance and you know you know copy enraged and [TS]

01:52:23   constant I'm snapshots like there are many modern features that are more [TS]

01:52:28   selling points if you are downsides then data integrity didn't think is the most [TS]

01:52:34   important ones I think if and when they do come out with a new file system I [TS]

01:52:38   fully expect to be disappointing the new fathers day even though it has a whole [TS]

01:52:42   bunch of the modern cool features that I like because it doesn't have the one [TS]

01:52:45   picture that i think is essential which is let me know that the data I wrote is [TS]

01:52:49   the same data still there five years mostly because that one feature is is [TS]

01:52:54   the biggest performance it like that is the one that cost the most in performing [TS]

01:52:57   I really hope I'm wrong about this but like if I had to choose which would you [TS]

01:53:01   rather have like all that was he cool features and better performance in [TS]

01:53:04   snapshots and stuff like that or data integrity out pic didn't agree if you [TS]

01:53:09   look at the kind of the reality of the world we live in today there the devices [TS]

01:53:13   that we use [TS]

01:53:15   how things are stored where things are stored the clouds roll in all of this it [TS]

01:53:19   you could almost see like if some product manager at Apple is trying to [TS]

01:53:23   win it with the pros and cons here you could almost see the argument of it did [TS]

01:53:27   integrity isn't worth the costs because the vast majority of our customers are [TS]

01:53:33   using things like iOS devices where they're not gonna have one instance of a [TS]

01:53:38   file system we're not gonna have like one phone using its file system for five [TS]

01:53:43   years they're going to have you know these things are all shorter lifespans [TS]

01:53:46   and they're going to be backed up to iCloud between managing like the truth [TS]

01:53:50   about system that uses as they didn't take it to check something I doubt it I [TS]

01:53:54   don't think we know I don't think it does Linux ext whatever they have it [TS]

01:53:59   don't think so maybe btrfs has an option [TS]

01:54:06   some of them have as an option not turned on but like you like for the same [TS]

01:54:08   reason [TS]

01:54:09   data centers will monitor for some reason for the cost CPU time and they're [TS]

01:54:12   all about you know a few times he is money is air conditioning is like you [TS]

01:54:17   know i mean like I just think we haven't tip inflection point where it's like in [TS]

01:54:24   my mind we have that stupid not to do it at least in situations where you really [TS]

01:54:28   care about the data but there is there still countervailing force is this a [TS]

01:54:31   while we don't really need to do it really did is that the rates are rates [TS]

01:54:35   are low and blah blah blah but like the volumes of data just so massive it's [TS]

01:54:40   it's like hard drive data rates like a big deal an individual's life but if [TS]

01:54:44   you're back players too hard drive failed a right there I'm so like [TS]

01:54:49   terabytes upon terabytes of data as the storage capacity goes up chances are [TS]

01:54:53   almost a hundred percent that you have a business trip somewhere is it an [TS]

01:54:57   important bit doesn't matter whatever was a problem probably not but like a [TS]

01:55:01   special with the cloud stuff one bomb device one phone that is little bit [TS]

01:55:06   flaky that you know [TS]

01:55:07   who knows what was wrong with it but I cosmic ray and then that couple bit [TS]

01:55:12   error that caused the bottom half of your wedding photo to be unreadable gets [TS]

01:55:15   transferred all the cloud and dutifully replicated all over the place and you [TS]

01:55:18   don't notice until you see it next year and the original one is gone and so [TS]

01:55:22   that's why did integrity important someone's gotta do it somewhere I don't [TS]

01:55:26   know if it's time for it to be done on my watch on my phone I think it's time [TS]

01:55:30   for it to be done my Mac I really think it's time to be done in datacenters even [TS]

01:55:33   though it costs more money but that's in our lifetime I think that's the thing [TS]

01:55:37   that you look back on it as being barbaric also ECC RAM pointing out [TS]

01:55:42   things throw that in there even the lack of that Israel's barbaric yes [TS]

01:55:47   yeah and that's i think thats more on Intel that Apple doesn't like the [TS]

01:55:53   chipset has to supported and I think only the Xeon chip sets of Intel stuff [TS]

01:55:56   ever do it's a little bit more secretary it's a little bit more expensive but not [TS]

01:56:01   doing it like ECC RAM is made more important by HFS plus not carry you know [TS]

01:56:05   like if you have some sort of axonal bit flipping and RAM hopefully if you're [TS]

01:56:09   dealing with all system data you will notice that I like our now that now the [TS]

01:56:13   files changed on disk when it shouldn't have over the bites I read into RAM not [TS]

01:56:16   the same as the bites underscores the checks on those different like you just [TS]

01:56:19   need to have that a way to check whether your answers right somewhere [TS]

01:56:28   so much [TS]

01:56:29   thing will save for next week when that when that pause happened I looked up [TS]

01:56:33   with like a panic in my eyes got already [TS]
