159: A Typo On Your Brake Pads

00:00:00   every single person on twitter is [TS]

00:00:03   telling me about the Bernie Sanders fish [TS]

00:00:05   thing didn't happen like a day or two [TS]

00:00:07   ago I don't know [TS]

00:00:08   well you could you can love them in with [TS]

00:00:10   all the people telling me about the [TS]

00:00:11   latest aftermarket for ferrari with my [TS]

00:00:14   name on it we got it done doesn't give [TS]

00:00:16   your pre-show neutral there's there's a [TS]

00:00:19   Ferrari now how do they say it is it [TS]

00:00:22   siracusa or do they say two different [TS]

00:00:24   way this is not a new thing this this [TS]

00:00:26   company has done this to every minute [TS]

00:00:29   interview ferrari for like the past [TS]

00:00:31   three generations like it's not it's [TS]

00:00:32   they always look yellow and black [TS]

00:00:34   they're always kind of gaudy they always [TS]

00:00:36   have that same name [TS]

00:00:37   they always have the name siracusa yeah [TS]

00:00:39   well that's something that's the first [TS]

00:00:40   part of NM or something [TS]

00:00:42   masonry like an aftermarket tuner like a [TS]

00:00:44   like a like rough [TS]

00:00:46   yeah or what's the BMW was addy didn't I [TS]

00:00:49   don't know it's that dying is how I've [TS]

00:00:50   always pronounced it's pronounced [TS]

00:00:52   siracusa sailing for Mustangs and you [TS]

00:00:56   know anyway they do this all the time [TS]

00:00:57   but you know every time it comes out [TS]

00:00:59   someone someone sees it for the first [TS]

00:01:01   time and they tell me I've never seen [TS]

00:01:02   this before you have I have sent you the [TS]

00:01:04   picture of like the 458 version I've [TS]

00:01:07   never seen it i'm telling you i don't [TS]

00:01:09   think i've said this i think i also sent [TS]

00:01:11   you that maybe the one I didn't know you [TS]

00:01:12   before that but the I think you've seen [TS]

00:01:14   it before who all right so what so it's [TS]

00:01:17   just like of it aftermarket monitor that [TS]

00:01:18   that mods and resells messed up for [TS]

00:01:20   ari's with your name on them [TS]

00:01:22   yep cool alright and there ra yellow and [TS]

00:01:25   black which some people find gaudy so I [TS]

00:01:27   like I would never pick those colors but [TS]

00:01:28   i don't think there is hideous as a lot [TS]

00:01:30   of people to mean it's like if you're [TS]

00:01:31   gonna go yellow and black it's sure as [TS]

00:01:33   hell is yellow and black is that means [TS]

00:01:35   like but you know lime-green [TS]

00:01:36   Lamborghinis or whatever like some [TS]

00:01:38   people some people like that for their [TS]

00:01:39   exotic cars out of curiosity so they [TS]

00:01:41   cannot to Pastor John test here if you [TS]

00:01:44   were given one of these would you sell [TS]

00:01:46   it for a different one [TS]

00:01:47   yeah where would you keep this one sell [TS]

00:01:49   sell sell sell [TS]

00:01:50   ok because like every you get good money [TS]

00:01:54   for it would have no miles on it will be [TS]

00:01:56   brand-new and these specially modified [TS]

00:01:58   ones like they do for people who want [TS]

00:02:00   this you know they're all lightened have [TS]

00:02:01   extra carbon fiber and then also the [TS]

00:02:03   stuff you did good money for you could [TS]

00:02:04   buy a standard i would rather have a box [TS]

00:02:06   stock boring [TS]

00:02:08   and one than this you know I i like to [TS]

00:02:10   think in in my peaceful happy place in [TS]

00:02:14   my mind that people who would who would [TS]

00:02:16   have the means to buy a Ferrari like [TS]

00:02:19   this would have better taste than to [TS]

00:02:21   choose this one but I don't think it's [TS]

00:02:23   that I don't think it's that bad like we [TS]

00:02:25   don't think is untested like free for [TS]

00:02:27   example i think the like the baby food [TS]

00:02:29   metallic orange weird or mustardy kind [TS]

00:02:34   of yellow BMWs ri1 pleasing this looks [TS]

00:02:38   like a matchbox coming you know like and [TS]

00:02:40   i'll give you that if if you're going [TS]

00:02:41   for that look it's like don't go halfway [TS]

00:02:44   if you want to have like pins and flares [TS]

00:02:46   and extreme contrasting colors like this [TS]

00:02:49   is that and it is a reasonable execution [TS]

00:02:51   of that I think it is a valid aesthetic [TS]

00:02:53   like it's like the difference between [TS]

00:02:55   the old difference between Lamborghini [TS]

00:02:57   and Ferrari Lamborghini was always how [TS]

00:02:59   many intakes and ducks and sharp angles [TS]

00:03:03   and fins and wedges and stuff we put on [TS]

00:03:05   there and for our was a little bit [TS]

00:03:06   smoother and this is kind of like taking [TS]

00:03:08   a Ferrari and going in the Lamborghini [TS]

00:03:09   direction so I don't think is actually [TS]

00:03:11   ugly i just think it's you know it's too [TS]

00:03:13   loud for my taste but i think it is a [TS]

00:03:15   competent execution of that style so if [TS]

00:03:19   you were given one immediately sell yep [TS]

00:03:21   i think i would too [TS]

00:03:23   oh I absolutely would but my home is [TS]

00:03:25   where it's worth good money like you [TS]

00:03:27   would get more money than selling a [TS]

00:03:28   regular one because it is more rare and [TS]

00:03:30   it's it has desirable characteristics [TS]

00:03:32   for people who want to race them or [TS]

00:03:33   whatever you want to do with this thing [TS]

00:03:34   and sometimes mods make something less [TS]

00:03:37   valuable actually i would venture to say [TS]

00:03:39   that most models make cars less valuable [TS]

00:03:41   for aftermarket things like again if you [TS]

00:03:44   gotta a BMW with a bunch of aftermarket [TS]

00:03:46   modifications that is desirable for [TS]

00:03:48   anyone who wants an aftermarket modified [TS]

00:03:50   BMW they will give you more money than a [TS]

00:03:52   fresh off the lot stock BMW and so when [TS]

00:03:55   I when I did buy a used BMW I i [TS]

00:03:58   specifically sought one out that was [TS]

00:04:00   unmodified and then i got when i when i [TS]

00:04:03   went i had to drive to Maryland to see [TS]

00:04:05   the 1i found and it was the windows were [TS]

00:04:08   halted in my cup [TS]

00:04:09   I didn't want that you know it but i [TS]

00:04:11   figured that easy to undo so I I brought [TS]

00:04:14   i bought that one brought it home and [TS]

00:04:15   immediately brought to attend place to [TS]

00:04:17   remove all 10 and i didn't know that is [TS]

00:04:19   that right yeah that was that was the [TS]

00:04:21   one model that [TS]

00:04:21   it was shipped also there's a ECU modded [TS]

00:04:24   yeah so I I don't understand i'm not a [TS]

00:04:26   modern so i don't really understand that [TS]

00:04:28   the whole the whole deal with it or the [TS]

00:04:29   whole culture behind it so I I just [TS]

00:04:32   assume that it's just not for me [TS]

00:04:33   well you know it it depends on what [TS]

00:04:35   you're after right like I agree with you [TS]

00:04:37   that I would never ever ever buy a car [TS]

00:04:41   that I've known to be modified but that [TS]

00:04:43   being said I put a chip in my car which [TS]

00:04:46   is to say I'm inside you see I say put a [TS]

00:04:48   chip in it I it's all software you know [TS]

00:04:50   there's no physical bits to it but i did [TS]

00:04:54   that's my car i have a cob on it and I [TS]

00:04:57   like it but once the cob its CEO BB it's [TS]

00:05:01   the company that that report that has a [TS]

00:05:05   box that lets you reprogram the computer [TS]

00:05:07   and so that's what I've done to my car [TS]

00:05:09   and it's better for sure it's faster and [TS]

00:05:11   I like it but I wouldn't say that it's [TS]

00:05:14   night and day better and this is the [TS]

00:05:16   first car i can remember that I've done [TS]

00:05:17   any sort of real modification to never [TS]

00:05:20   tempted to call or even though I kind of [TS]

00:05:21   would like to but yeah it's not worth it [TS]

00:05:23   I've never put aftermarket wheels on a [TS]

00:05:25   car off not worth that you should have [TS]

00:05:28   seen how ridiculous i looked getting out [TS]

00:05:31   of a car with black tinted windows [TS]

00:05:33   I actually kind of him sad that I didn't [TS]

00:05:36   it lasted less than a week that was the [TS]

00:05:38   little the first thing I did when I [TS]

00:05:39   brought her home like I drove home and I [TS]

00:05:42   think that same day I called the [TS]

00:05:43   templates to schedule an appointment to [TS]

00:05:45   get to pick it up [TS]

00:05:46   that's not surprising John have you ever [TS]

00:05:48   done any sort of monster your car now [TS]

00:05:51   but if I did I would do the ones like [TS]

00:05:53   the ones of those day after marketers [TS]

00:05:54   that I described before are like where [TS]

00:05:56   they do things that try to make the the [TS]

00:05:59   car better like so lightweight parts [TS]

00:06:01   take some part that's heavy and put in a [TS]

00:06:02   part that is equally strong but lighter [TS]

00:06:04   like that's always good right or you [TS]

00:06:06   know inside the engine if you could [TS]

00:06:08   change like titanium connecting rods [TS]

00:06:09   together you know to increase the the [TS]

00:06:11   red line or whatever like those type of [TS]

00:06:13   modifications seemed to me Martin [TS]

00:06:15   exactly the same things that the m [TS]

00:06:17   division does that AMG does or whatever [TS]

00:06:19   you know like changes that actually make [TS]

00:06:22   the car better and whatever way you want [TS]

00:06:24   to make the car better less window [TS]

00:06:26   tinting and custom paint and ground [TS]

00:06:29   effects and more more of the things that [TS]

00:06:31   the manufacturer would do [TS]

00:06:33   to make the car better indeed alright [TS]

00:06:36   well I'm sad that you would not be a fan [TS]

00:06:39   of the Ferrari siracusa I don't know [TS]

00:06:41   what I mean if the roles were reversed [TS]

00:06:42   that was the Ferrari list and how could [TS]

00:06:44   you not [TS]

00:06:45   although that would be a terrible night [TS]

00:06:46   that has your name all over the thing [TS]

00:06:48   but just the item that's not what I want [TS]

00:06:50   to hurry i wanted to be read call me [TS]

00:06:52   crazy [TS]

00:06:53   what would a Ferrari listby I don't even [TS]

00:06:56   know it all of course it'd be white [TS]

00:06:58   that's it now huh we're done [TS]

00:07:01   same as it ever was gotta try to get the [TS]

00:07:05   four-wheel-drive one right there be four [TS]

00:07:07   wheel drive one took to stop so you want [TS]

00:07:10   yeah that's it alright can we move on to [TS]

00:07:12   follow up I probably should have done [TS]

00:07:15   some research about the mono xamarin [TS]

00:07:18   confusion and we got a handful of emails [TS]

00:07:20   about this and I probably looked at them [TS]

00:07:23   and said yeah it's whatever and then I [TS]

00:07:25   archive them to do you want to take the [TS]

00:07:27   stage on as did to explain i was gonna [TS]

00:07:30   stop you when you were saying during the [TS]

00:07:31   show but I figured just let it slide [TS]

00:07:33   normally cares but apparently a lot of [TS]

00:07:35   people there i don't know all the [TS]

00:07:36   details of this but I at least know that [TS]

00:07:37   mono is the name was not this is not [TS]

00:07:39   interchangeable was a marine same room [TS]

00:07:41   as a company named mono is the name of [TS]

00:07:43   the open-source implementation of dotnet [TS]

00:07:45   and their related to each other but it's [TS]

00:07:47   not as if mono became xamarin and some [TS]

00:07:50   people wrote us tell us things that we [TS]

00:07:52   talk about our previous shows that was [TS]

00:07:53   my room is doing is making a way for you [TS]

00:07:54   to write iOS applications by writing and [TS]

00:07:56   c-sharp to use their framework and [TS]

00:07:58   deployed iOS and other platforms and [TS]

00:08:00   southern microsoft buying them gives [TS]

00:08:02   them a company that lets you write [TS]

00:08:05   applications and C sharp and have them [TS]

00:08:06   run on more than just windows phone not [TS]

00:08:09   you know we didn't have a whole show we [TS]

00:08:10   talked about that like what it would be [TS]

00:08:11   like to write to write an iOS app in [TS]

00:08:14   c-sharp we talked about it a long time [TS]

00:08:16   ago so long ago that it's not likely I'm [TS]

00:08:18   gonna bother putting shit anyway I think [TS]

00:08:21   the only people who care are people [TS]

00:08:23   already know the intricacies better than [TS]

00:08:25   we do and the people who don't we can [TS]

00:08:28   just leave it at if you want to know [TS]

00:08:30   more details about it look it up [TS]

00:08:32   what we said on the last show was a [TS]

00:08:34   little bit muddled but then again this [TS]

00:08:36   whole thing I feel like it's a little [TS]

00:08:37   bit model like trying to figure out what [TS]

00:08:38   they're doing with this technology what [TS]

00:08:40   what products is amber and have [TS]

00:08:41   now versus what is this Microsoft buying [TS]

00:08:44   their buying the people the expertise do [TS]

00:08:46   they care how much they care about the [TS]

00:08:48   products that the company has now versus [TS]

00:08:49   the company that Microsoft wants them to [TS]

00:08:51   build or maybe take what they've already [TS]

00:08:53   built in modified in a one way or [TS]

00:08:55   another and it was this flurry of [TS]

00:08:56   stories about you mentioned something to [TS]

00:08:58   kc like the past few weeks about [TS]

00:09:00   Microsoft's various projects to let [TS]

00:09:04   people run applications from other [TS]

00:09:07   mobile platforms on windows mobile so [TS]

00:09:09   like you know take your iOS app and [TS]

00:09:11   running on windows phone or at our [TS]

00:09:14   windows 10 or whatever and will run [TS]

00:09:17   android apps or you'll be able to [TS]

00:09:18   recompile your android apps for Windows [TS]

00:09:20   Phone i forgot they were called where [TS]

00:09:23   they're all kinds of like woods island [TS]

00:09:25   would something like the Ironwood anyway [TS]

00:09:27   obviously we're not keeping up on the [TS]

00:09:31   all these various projects couple more [TS]

00:09:32   or can recently a couple of them live on [TS]

00:09:35   it's all part of Microsoft's ongoing [TS]

00:09:37   struggle to figure out how to take what [TS]

00:09:40   is by all accounts a reasonable mobile [TS]

00:09:42   platform at least as reasonable as [TS]

00:09:43   Android certainly better than android [TS]

00:09:45   was an android early days and try to [TS]

00:09:47   find a way to make it viable in the [TS]

00:09:50   market because at this point android and [TS]

00:09:53   iOS have so much momentum that they're [TS]

00:09:56   just trying to you know trying to get [TS]

00:09:58   customers trying to get developers it's [TS]

00:10:01   the it's the really tough chicken egg [TS]

00:10:03   situation that Apple founded itself in [TS]

00:10:06   with the mac where the pc just came to [TS]

00:10:07   dominate and no matter how much better [TS]

00:10:09   the mac was it was just difficult to get [TS]

00:10:11   people to develop for it and one of the [TS]

00:10:14   one of the strategies people suggested [TS]

00:10:15   as Oh max run windows programs or it [TS]

00:10:17   should be easy to write a program for [TS]

00:10:19   windows and for that program for the mac [TS]

00:10:21   and apple steadfastly held against that [TS]

00:10:24   saying no we don't want like we don't [TS]

00:10:26   want people to we know that might get [TS]

00:10:28   people to report their application for [TS]

00:10:30   those be crappy windows ports we want [TS]

00:10:32   people to buy real mac applications and [TS]

00:10:34   be real mac developers and do everything [TS]

00:10:37   the right way [TS]

00:10:38   was that a mistake was made no [TS]

00:10:40   difference i don't know it's just what [TS]

00:10:41   Apple did it certainly kind of the high [TS]

00:10:44   road [TS]

00:10:45   microsoft is kind of trying everything [TS]

00:10:46   at this point what if we make it easier [TS]

00:10:48   for you to take your iOS application and [TS]

00:10:50   use some of that all summer all that [TS]

00:10:53   work to get [TS]

00:10:54   same application running on windows [TS]

00:10:56   would that help you get developers but [TS]

00:10:57   if we will run android apps period just [TS]

00:10:59   will take the binaries and then somehow [TS]

00:11:01   magically like all sorts of ideas to try [TS]

00:11:03   to get some traction in the market to my [TS]

00:11:06   eyes as someone who supported apples [TS]

00:11:08   decisions not to license mac OS and [TS]

00:11:12   everything back in the days i think [TS]

00:11:14   those efforts are not going to help them [TS]

00:11:15   but you know we said trying right yeah I [TS]

00:11:19   mean I guess so yeah so I'm sorry to the [TS]

00:11:21   two people who are really into mono and [TS]

00:11:24   salmon and in this whole ecosystem I [TS]

00:11:26   like John said it's it's fairly [TS]

00:11:29   confusing for me since I don't live and [TS]

00:11:30   breathe it to keep it all apart i'm [TS]

00:11:31   sorry i got that a little bit screwed up [TS]

00:11:35   I'm sorry to both Windows Phone users [TS]

00:11:36   for saying something wrong about your [TS]

00:11:37   platform please email marketing our [TS]

00:11:40   first bunch of this week is audible.com [TS]

00:11:52   listen to it audible has it you can [TS]

00:11:54   listen to audiobooks from virtually [TS]

00:11:56   every genre anytime anywhere you can [TS]

00:11:59   play audible audiobooks on phones [TS]

00:12:01   tablets computers even ipods audio books [TS]

00:12:04   are great for flights long road trips or [TS]

00:12:06   even your daily commute you might think [TS]

00:12:08   you'll have time to read books but you'd [TS]

00:12:09   be surprised how many audio books you [TS]

00:12:11   can hear each year even if you only [TS]

00:12:13   listen to and from work every day [TS]

00:12:14   because all that time adds up [TS]

00:12:16   audiobooks bring books whole life many [TS]

00:12:18   of them are read by the author's [TS]

00:12:49   up at audible.com / ATP that's [TS]

00:12:52   audible.com / ATP thanks to audible for [TS]

00:12:56   sponsoring our show so Apple made an [TS]

00:12:59   oops in the last week [TS]

00:13:01   oh she's this is bad this is so bad it's [TS]

00:13:05   not that bad it's funny but I add [TS]

00:13:08   the fix was really easy alright so what [TS]

00:13:10   are we talking about here Casey you're [TS]

00:13:11   here the summarizer so behind this [TS]

00:13:14   summarized in chief mynah so my [TS]

00:13:17   understanding of the situation was Apple [TS]

00:13:19   has a mechanism by way they can [TS]

00:13:21   blacklist kernel extensions and I can't [TS]

00:13:25   think of any particular examples offhand [TS]

00:13:26   but there are times when Colonel [TS]

00:13:27   extension will go bad and they can [TS]

00:13:29   blacklisted and it's usually used for [TS]

00:13:31   malware like if they discover some kind [TS]

00:13:33   of Colonel attention malware this is [TS]

00:13:35   that the I think the intention of this [TS]

00:13:37   system is to is for them to be able to [TS]

00:13:39   very quickly disable it on all max you [TS]

00:13:42   know globally within a very short amount [TS]

00:13:44   of time and the other example again I [TS]

00:13:45   got it is the one from this thing which [TS]

00:13:47   is if they have a new version of an [TS]

00:13:49   extension because they know the old 1i [TS]

00:13:51   can exploit or something like their own [TS]

00:13:52   like their own kernel extensions they [TS]

00:13:54   want to blacklist the old one so that [TS]

00:13:57   you know so that people's max are [TS]

00:13:59   exploitable because they'll give you a [TS]

00:14:00   new one here use this new one and then [TS]

00:14:02   by the way make sure the old one is that [TS]

00:14:03   is never loaded again because we know [TS]

00:14:04   it's problem without yep right this is [TS]

00:14:06   this extends like we're having [TS]

00:14:07   clarification distant from each other [TS]

00:14:09   and this extends also to binaries to [TS]

00:14:11   apps like if they can blacklist any [TS]

00:14:13   binary that is deemed malware and so it [TS]

00:14:16   really is a very good feature for [TS]

00:14:18   malware for the treatment to prevent the [TS]

00:14:20   spread of it to disable stuff that gets [TS]

00:14:22   out there so it's a good feature that [TS]

00:14:24   that I'm glad it's there [TS]

00:14:26   however they messed something up this [TS]

00:14:28   time yes so it's important to note that [TS]

00:14:31   these black list entries can ride [TS]

00:14:35   without doing a formal software update [TS]

00:14:38   of course it's still some sort of [TS]

00:14:40   software update that's happening behind [TS]

00:14:42   the scenes but the key is that is [TS]

00:14:43   happening behind the scenes and so [TS]

00:14:45   without any user intervention you can [TS]

00:14:47   just have this update this black list [TS]

00:14:50   update get happened to you and things [TS]

00:14:53   that are blacklisted will just magically [TS]

00:14:55   go away [TS]

00:14:56   well I didn't really think much of this [TS]

00:14:59   nigga didn't even know about it but then [TS]

00:15:01   a few days ago I could swear I saw [TS]

00:15:03   Jason's now saying all of a sudden my [TS]

00:15:06   imac's ethernet port isn't working [TS]

00:15:08   anymore is anyone else seeing this [TS]

00:15:10   what's going on here and mine was [TS]

00:15:12   working on my knightmon my imac's I [TS]

00:15:14   didn't think much of it and then fast [TS]

00:15:16   forward about 24 hours and it turns out [TS]

00:15:18   that Apple blacklisted their own [TS]

00:15:21   internet driver whoops without shipping [TS]

00:15:25   a replacement because that was that [TS]

00:15:27   that's that's my understanding is that's [TS]

00:15:28   where this one wrong they had a new [TS]

00:15:29   version of this driver is coming with [TS]

00:15:31   like 10-11 for whatever which is not out [TS]

00:15:33   yet i think still at and so they [TS]

00:15:38   blacklisted the old one and there you [TS]

00:15:41   know you supposed to get the blacklist [TS]

00:15:42   at the same time you get the upgrade to [TS]

00:15:43   the new one but instead the blackness [TS]

00:15:44   for the old one out but the upgrade to [TS]

00:15:46   the new one did not so if you're Jason's [TS]

00:15:48   now all of a sudden your Mac appears not [TS]

00:15:50   to have an ethernet port over this [TS]

00:15:51   manifested like basically didn't even [TS]

00:15:54   that is not going to go because the [TS]

00:15:55   colonel extension will not be loaded and [TS]

00:15:56   you have no replacement [TS]

00:15:58   yeah and and the end they they did [TS]

00:16:00   within I don't know a few hours maybe [TS]

00:16:02   like they did fairly quickly fix that [TS]

00:16:05   with like the next definition next [TS]

00:16:07   version of that the definition that [TS]

00:16:08   downloads but that didn't do you any [TS]

00:16:11   good if you rebooted in the meantime [TS]

00:16:13   there and then you had no internet with [TS]

00:16:16   which to download that update and not to [TS]

00:16:18   mention the fact that like I think you [TS]

00:16:20   know it's not like it's not like it [TS]

00:16:21   comes up and tells you [TS]

00:16:23   error dialog hey your Ethernet Colonel [TS]

00:16:25   extension is no longer working because [TS]

00:16:27   we deem that insecure like it they don't [TS]

00:16:28   tell you anything just fail silently you [TS]

00:16:30   can just disappears if you if you reboot [TS]

00:16:33   these off for updates like they happened [TS]

00:16:34   face asleep behind the scenes you don't [TS]

00:16:36   see them they don't go through like you [TS]

00:16:38   go there's no spinner there's no [TS]

00:16:39   dialogue there's no thing popping up [TS]

00:16:41   there's no like I see the mac app store [TS]

00:16:43   launching none of that happens just [TS]

00:16:44   magically gets updated and as far as i [TS]

00:16:46   know you can't disable it right you [TS]

00:16:48   probably can you disable I mean you [TS]

00:16:49   could like fire wallet but like like you [TS]

00:16:51   know if it's like there's no setting to [TS]

00:16:53   not do those right probably just read [TS]

00:16:55   rename the the binary that uses it uses [TS]

00:16:57   that it doesn't use like software update [TS]

00:16:59   do whatever you can there's always ways [TS]

00:17:00   to stop the stuff but yeah in general [TS]

00:17:01   for the regular person there is no way [TS]

00:17:03   there is no button or checkbox our [TS]

00:17:04   preference pane for you to not do that [TS]

00:17:06   right and I mean so you know the good [TS]

00:17:08   thing is like at least it didn't also [TS]

00:17:09   affect Wi-Fi so that probably cut down [TS]

00:17:12   substantially in the number of number of [TS]

00:17:14   computers that were affected by this [TS]

00:17:15   because very reason right [TS]

00:17:17   he well he's like us and a lot of [TS]

00:17:19   people's spirits out but you know I [TS]

00:17:22   think what's most concerning about this [TS]

00:17:24   like look no one no one's perfect but it [TS]

00:17:26   just seems like this this to me feels a [TS]

00:17:29   lot like the same kind of problem as the [TS]

00:17:32   whole mac app store [TS]

00:17:34   certificate expiration problem that [TS]

00:17:35   happened twice in the last few months [TS]

00:17:38   just the latter one seemed to only [TS]

00:17:39   happen to developers but you know where [TS]

00:17:41   it just seems like there's this really [TS]

00:17:44   critical function of the system that [TS]

00:17:47   something seemingly just rushed out [TS]

00:17:49   there without being tested or with some [TS]

00:17:51   degree of carelessness and I it doesn't [TS]

00:17:55   you know it doesn't bode well for the [TS]

00:17:56   Mac when Apple seems to not be devoting [TS]

00:17:59   the resources to what should be their [TS]

00:18:02   most stable secure platform like the max [TS]

00:18:05   should be a rock it should be rocks [TS]

00:18:07   table because it is mature it's not [TS]

00:18:09   changing that that quickly anymore it's [TS]

00:18:11   not like it doesn't like iOS where [TS]

00:18:13   things are moving really fast and is [TS]

00:18:15   constantly new stuff it's the rock it [TS]

00:18:17   should be stable and the fact that [TS]

00:18:20   they're doing things like this with some [TS]

00:18:23   kind of failure in the process where [TS]

00:18:25   things are getting out that that break [TS]

00:18:27   things pretty badly like this it really [TS]

00:18:30   makes me concerned for the process they [TS]

00:18:33   have in place to to validate these [TS]

00:18:35   things and to test for these things and [TS]

00:18:37   for the the overall amount of resources [TS]

00:18:40   that they're giving the mac because [TS]

00:18:41   everything we keep hearing from people [TS]

00:18:43   inside the company is that basically [TS]

00:18:45   whenever there's like a new hot project [TS]

00:18:47   engineers get moving around like crazy [TS]

00:18:49   like there's constantly like engineer [TS]

00:18:50   getting pulled off of certain project or [TS]

00:18:52   go into work at a more interesting group [TS]

00:18:54   or whatever else because lots of [TS]

00:18:55   internal moving the people around and [TS]

00:18:58   often leaves things effectively status [TS]

00:19:01   and it feels to me from the outside like [TS]

00:19:05   most of the mac is effectively staff [TS]

00:19:08   Lewis and that's concerning to me as and [TS]

00:19:11   because what happens then when when when [TS]

00:19:13   things are staff less like this and that [TS]

00:19:14   inside Apple what tends to happen is at [TS]

00:19:17   some point you know a year later [TS]

00:19:19   somebody dictate hey we need to have a [TS]

00:19:22   new version of OS 10 with 10 new [TS]

00:19:23   features or hundred new features or [TS]

00:19:25   whatever and then people kind of get [TS]

00:19:27   temporarily brought in and they do this [TS]

00:19:29   kind of like drive-by work and then they [TS]

00:19:31   go back to other stuff and again i don't [TS]

00:19:33   know if this is how it works but this is [TS]

00:19:34   how it feels and it kind of matches up [TS]

00:19:36   with a little bit of things we've heard [TS]

00:19:37   and so it just seems like it seems like [TS]

00:19:41   Apple does not dedicate resources [TS]

00:19:43   full-time two things that I think need [TS]

00:19:47   all time resources and that to me is [TS]

00:19:50   very concerning [TS]

00:19:51   I don't know what to make of it i mean [TS]

00:19:53   on the one side I feel like apples job [TS]

00:19:57   as a hardware and software vendor is not [TS]

00:20:00   to make this mistake but just like we [TS]

00:20:02   were talking about the police officers [TS]

00:20:04   earlier everyone's human everyone makes [TS]

00:20:05   mistakes i don't know if i don't know if [TS]

00:20:09   it's if if it's fair for us to try to [TS]

00:20:12   assume what happened i mean i don't know [TS]

00:20:14   if this is somebody dropped the ball I [TS]

00:20:16   don't know if this is somebody hit a [TS]

00:20:17   button a little too early accidentally [TS]

00:20:18   it doesn't really matter but certainly a [TS]

00:20:22   lot of what we've talked about in a [TS]

00:20:24   couple of different subjects over the [TS]

00:20:26   last few episodes of the show is [TS]

00:20:27   perception and when were already of the [TS]

00:20:29   perception that Apple isn't doesn't have [TS]

00:20:32   the attention to detail that they used [TS]

00:20:34   to do things like this don't doesn't [TS]

00:20:37   really help [TS]

00:20:38   similarly you know another so a similar [TS]

00:20:41   example is Steven Hackett noticing just [TS]

00:20:44   the other day and I don't know how I [TS]

00:20:45   never noticed this that there's a really [TS]

00:20:48   kind of crummy and semi egregious typo [TS]

00:20:52   in disk utility and it he says at the [TS]

00:20:56   bottom of this post while this may seem [TS]

00:20:58   silly because it's a typo it's not like [TS]

00:21:00   functionally broken while this may seem [TS]

00:21:02   silly it's this attention to detail [TS]

00:21:04   stuff that worries me about apple [TS]

00:21:06   software and that's I think why were [TS]

00:21:09   harping on this is because Apple it [TS]

00:21:14   companies of this size and companies [TS]

00:21:16   that out how much they pay attention to [TS]

00:21:21   detail they shouldn't really make [TS]

00:21:24   mistakes like these and if they do they [TS]

00:21:26   shouldn't be often and granted [TS]

00:21:27   blacklisting an ethernet driver is very [TS]

00:21:30   very different than transposing a couple [TS]

00:21:31   of words and disk utility but well but [TS]

00:21:34   you know what like disk utility like [TS]

00:21:35   first of all like that was part of a big [TS]

00:21:38   disk utility update and redesign that [TS]

00:21:40   probably didn't need to happen i don't [TS]

00:21:42   know i'm not familiar with the logical [TS]

00:21:43   and behind it but it's like it's a [TS]

00:21:45   system utility that got like a basically [TS]

00:21:47   every design that removed a bunch of [TS]

00:21:48   features and made it look nicer it's [TS]

00:21:50   like who only geeks were ever using this [TS]

00:21:53   like this doesn't didn't need to be made [TS]

00:21:55   nicer in a way that negatively affected [TS]

00:21:57   it and it's kind it's like you don't [TS]

00:21:59   want disk utility of all [TS]

00:22:01   things to have a drive-by sloppily done [TS]

00:22:03   update like a typo in disk utility is [TS]

00:22:06   like a typo on your brake pads like you [TS]

00:22:09   really don't want any signs of [TS]

00:22:11   carelessness in that and so it just it [TS]

00:22:15   worries me that it just seems like [TS]

00:22:17   nothing is off limits for carelessness [TS]

00:22:20   with with the maximum and with what [TS]

00:22:23   Apple's working on and again like so [TS]

00:22:26   many people us included depend on this [TS]

00:22:29   platform to be stable and to be are rock [TS]

00:22:32   where we get our work done it doesn't [TS]

00:22:35   move that fast anymore but we don't care [TS]

00:22:37   it's this is this is the stability here [TS]

00:22:40   in an industry where all the mobile [TS]

00:22:42   stuff is always up in the air and always [TS]

00:22:45   crazy and everything is constantly in [TS]

00:22:47   data at best we get to like a [TS]

00:22:49   point-to-point three-point release on [TS]

00:22:51   things before we get the next new [TS]

00:22:52   version it's a total mess again at least [TS]

00:22:55   the mac should be stable [TS]

00:22:58   it should be the rock it should not be [TS]

00:23:00   getting careless updates or careless [TS]

00:23:03   actions and it should not be [TS]

00:23:05   short-staffed i don't know i think that [TS]

00:23:07   you've been a driver i don't consider [TS]

00:23:09   that a big deal because like I think of [TS]

00:23:10   how long this mechanism has existed [TS]

00:23:12   think of how many times they've messed [TS]

00:23:13   it up like this is the only time i can [TS]

00:23:14   think of that they've messed it up and [TS]

00:23:16   it's existed for a long time and it was [TS]

00:23:17   fixed very easily it is very simple like [TS]

00:23:19   that so I i totally give them a pass and [TS]

00:23:21   i'm reminded of like you don't know you [TS]

00:23:24   guys remember the mac OS 754 person [TS]

00:23:26   system 754 sorry it was not mac OS 754 i [TS]

00:23:30   blame the internet for that that they [TS]

00:23:32   had basically two versions of like that [TS]

00:23:34   they that they reach golden master back [TS]

00:23:36   in the days when I actually meant [TS]

00:23:37   something because they would print [TS]

00:23:38   floppy disks and stuff and then they had [TS]

00:23:40   to stop and our no actually we made a [TS]

00:23:43   mistake and here's the new version but [TS]

00:23:45   some of the old version about out so it [TS]

00:23:47   for a certain period of time there are [TS]

00:23:48   multiple official binaries of system 7.5 [TS]

00:23:53   points for and floppy disks floating [TS]

00:23:55   around or you couldn't be sure exactly [TS]

00:23:57   which one you have is they all just 7.5 [TS]

00:23:58   points for and they didn't have build [TS]

00:23:59   number is visible to users at times [TS]

00:24:01   anyway [TS]

00:24:01   stuff like that happens it's not a big [TS]

00:24:03   deal the mac app store certificate [TS]

00:24:06   signing thing I think that is emblematic [TS]

00:24:08   of like well this is supposed to be a [TS]

00:24:10   major feature and you have the iOS App [TS]

00:24:12   Store and it's the type of thing that is [TS]

00:24:13   really complicated and hard to get right [TS]

00:24:15   and requires forethought and care and [TS]

00:24:17   like it's not so simple as like oops [TS]

00:24:19   well just we'll just wait you know and [TS]

00:24:22   another song update will fix this lots [TS]

00:24:23   of people were left in situations where [TS]

00:24:24   their apps wouldn't launch a little [TS]

00:24:26   something that I think shows a lack of [TS]

00:24:28   investment in the mac of like not not [TS]

00:24:31   being prepared for that eventuality was [TS]

00:24:32   like give you can make something like [TS]

00:24:33   that happen on the iphone and for the [TS]

00:24:35   same period of time the same percentage [TS]

00:24:36   of iphone users what app icons and their [TS]

00:24:38   phones and nothing was launched that [TS]

00:24:40   would be just a disaster of epic [TS]

00:24:41   proportions I mean and some degrees like [TS]

00:24:43   well the iphone sells more that's why [TS]

00:24:44   can't more attention or whatever but yet [TS]

00:24:46   we all think that should be a little bit [TS]

00:24:48   more care on the mac and the disk [TS]

00:24:50   utility one disk utility is the least of [TS]

00:24:52   disk systems problems i think it did it [TS]

00:24:55   did need a GUI refresh this gooey [TS]

00:24:58   refresh is not a great GUI refresh but i [TS]

00:25:00   don't think anyone would care that much [TS]

00:25:02   if it wasn't for the two things I Marco [TS]

00:25:04   mention removing features which is like [TS]

00:25:06   i was using that like you know you [TS]

00:25:08   haven't replaced it with anything [TS]

00:25:10   there's no promise of being replaced or [TS]

00:25:12   anything the old thing worked [TS]

00:25:15   why is it gone with no explanation for [TS]

00:25:16   removing features is bad and then having [TS]

00:25:19   I actually like the shots but someone [TS]

00:25:21   linked to something uh I think it's a md [TS]

00:25:24   sy again linking to the the story in [TS]

00:25:27   case we're just talking about about the [TS]

00:25:29   typo but just saying like SuperDuper [TS]

00:25:32   leverage some of the same command line [TS]

00:25:33   utilities and frameworks that are [TS]

00:25:35   underneath disk utility and SuperDuper [TS]

00:25:37   has a mode where it will clone your [TS]

00:25:39   drive it and you can tell erase the [TS]

00:25:41   destination drive first and then clone [TS]

00:25:43   onto it and he was getting like out of [TS]

00:25:45   disk space warning is because the the [TS]

00:25:48   system code that erases the volume would [TS]

00:25:51   tell SuperDuper yep totally just erase [TS]

00:25:53   that volume for you it's totally erased [TS]

00:25:54   go ahead and fill it and SuperDuper go [TS]

00:25:56   to try to fill it and eventually fill [TS]

00:25:57   the disciplines of the disk was in a [TS]

00:25:58   race like that the underlying disk [TS]

00:26:01   utility functionality of please erase [TS]

00:26:02   this volume for me would report success [TS]

00:26:05   but have actually failed and that type [TS]

00:26:07   of failure is like forget about [TS]

00:26:08   cosmetics but you know it's like missing [TS]

00:26:10   features and features that work worse [TS]

00:26:12   now [TS]

00:26:13   basic features like please erase this [TS]

00:26:15   volume for me that's that's kind of [TS]

00:26:17   untenable [TS]

00:26:17   so that's that's why I think this [TS]

00:26:19   utility updated is bad not because the [TS]

00:26:21   GUI is weird and they kind of [TS]

00:26:22   no the windows aren't resizable and it's [TS]

00:26:24   hard to see the messages or whatever [TS]

00:26:25   like it did need a GUI refresh feel free [TS]

00:26:27   to do that anytime you want but when the [TS]

00:26:29   underlying functionalities either remove [TS]

00:26:31   it doesn't work right that's a that's a [TS]

00:26:33   real bummer [TS]

00:26:33   yeah like if you know this was not a [TS]

00:26:36   utility that was very customer-facing [TS]

00:26:37   again this is like a really technical [TS]

00:26:40   utility that only geeks really ever used [TS]

00:26:44   it [TS]

00:26:45   if you can if you don't have the [TS]

00:26:47   resources or if you're not willing to [TS]

00:26:48   devote the resources to do it right then [TS]

00:26:51   just leave it be for another release [TS]

00:26:53   because no one is pressuring you to [TS]

00:26:56   redesign something like that that [TS]

00:26:58   already works and if if the best you can [TS]

00:27:01   do is to replace it with a version that [TS]

00:27:04   doesn't work as well then don't do that [TS]

00:27:07   don't do that redesign like why it it's [TS]

00:27:09   like you know just like with discovery d [TS]

00:27:11   like yeah you read on this whole this [TS]

00:27:13   whole thing you wrote this whole this [TS]

00:27:14   whole thing but the new one works worse [TS]

00:27:16   and eventually they came around to the [TS]

00:27:18   right decision which was ok we'll go [TS]

00:27:19   back to the old one with disk utility I [TS]

00:27:21   feel like they should do the same things [TS]

00:27:22   like either fix the new one in which i [TS]

00:27:25   think is probably a big job and it seems [TS]

00:27:27   to probably not have a lot of resources [TS]

00:27:29   devoted to it that i'm guessing that [TS]

00:27:30   wasn't that was one of those drive-by [TS]

00:27:32   updates or just put the open back [TS]

00:27:35   because it was fine it didn't not work [TS]

00:27:38   like it was fine it just was a little [TS]

00:27:40   bit ugly but who cares its utility you [TS]

00:27:42   gotta think the bike I mean so there's [TS]

00:27:44   the GUI part of it which like is not [TS]

00:27:46   most the application and then there's [TS]

00:27:47   think the underlying frameworks and [TS]

00:27:49   command line utilities and the fact that [TS]

00:27:50   some of those either disappeared or stop [TS]

00:27:53   working like those must have changed you [TS]

00:27:55   know it's not just that they butter [TS]

00:27:57   baguley on top of which is fine for back [TS]

00:27:58   the old GUI like there must have been [TS]

00:28:00   underlying changes to the parts of the [TS]

00:28:04   system the deal with disks all those [TS]

00:28:06   frameworks and you know like the other [TS]

00:28:08   command line utilities or whatever so it [TS]

00:28:10   might not be just as simple as putting [TS]

00:28:12   the old version of the disk utility [TS]

00:28:14   application it's it's a like many things [TS]

00:28:16   apple makes its a series of frameworks [TS]

00:28:18   and there's a GUI friend and his command [TS]

00:28:20   line from then and you know the big egos [TS]

00:28:22   always down through the system and why [TS]

00:28:25   they got rid of those features maybe [TS]

00:28:26   just trying to reduce the surface area [TS]

00:28:27   of bugs like they got rid of like [TS]

00:28:28   software raid or something and I don't [TS]

00:28:32   think it's uh you know a bad idea to say [TS]

00:28:35   so few of our [TS]

00:28:36   customers use this supporting it is [TS]

00:28:38   really difficult it should go away it's [TS]

00:28:40   not going to be supported from now on [TS]

00:28:42   like it's disappointing to people but if [TS]

00:28:45   you can do that in a good way and [TS]

00:28:47   basically i would say give everyone a [TS]

00:28:48   warning tell them softer rate is going [TS]

00:28:50   away give them alternatives instead of [TS]

00:28:51   just let you wake up and you're like oh [TS]

00:28:52   new version basically wait where's that [TS]

00:28:54   come and go like it wasn't it wasn't [TS]

00:28:56   sort of communicated out in any way or [TS]

00:28:58   there wasn't like one year where every [TS]

00:28:59   time you select software raid would tell [TS]

00:29:01   us already will be unsupported in the [TS]

00:29:02   next version you should stop you know [TS]

00:29:04   what you mean like this is good and bad [TS]

00:29:06   transitions but then having the thing [TS]

00:29:07   that says that erases discs failed to [TS]

00:29:10   erase the disk it but report success [TS]

00:29:11   that's just this is bad and I don't know [TS]

00:29:15   what the fixed that is I i like to [TS]

00:29:17   imagine of course that they re doing [TS]

00:29:18   this because they're ripping out all [TS]

00:29:20   this stuff the anticipation of the new [TS]

00:29:22   file system that's going to come 2017 [TS]

00:29:24   oh but who knows if that's even related [TS]

00:29:27   so anyway I'm like they'd read activity [TS]

00:29:29   monitor a couple years ago too i think [TS]

00:29:31   all those applications that's it like in [TS]

00:29:33   the utilities folder they should get [TS]

00:29:34   updates like every five years or so like [TS]

00:29:36   they should have googly goo refreshes or [TS]

00:29:38   whatever but like Marco said there's no [TS]

00:29:40   rush no time to do with this year wait [TS]

00:29:42   till next year it's not like people are [TS]

00:29:43   like oh i was gonna upgrade to the new [TS]

00:29:44   OS but they didn't upgrade activity [TS]

00:29:46   monitor this year no one cares that's [TS]

00:29:48   fine [TS]

00:29:48   yeah i would rather have just the old [TS]

00:29:50   one that still works than a new one that [TS]

00:29:53   doesn't yeah and it is to the credit for [TS]

00:29:55   the role of people do they gonna want to [TS]

00:29:57   follow some stuff like or storage and [TS]

00:29:58   everything and all the stuff that [TS]

00:30:00   enables like the new version filevault i [TS]

00:30:02   don't know how many years that was in [TS]

00:30:03   gestation but when it came like it [TS]

00:30:05   worked like the new version of final [TS]

00:30:06   like was let you know the old version [TS]

00:30:08   was terrifying and hits home runs and [TS]

00:30:10   markets gravy and the new version sadly [TS]

00:30:13   have the same name but it's like [TS]

00:30:14   everyone who tried it's like you do it [TS]

00:30:16   and it just works right and they had to [TS]

00:30:18   do so much plumbing changes to make that [TS]

00:30:20   happen about you know all of course [TS]

00:30:21   origin all that stuff like that's a [TS]

00:30:23   significant change but they waited until [TS]

00:30:25   it was basically ready I mean it's not [TS]

00:30:26   like there weren't bugs and I like they [TS]

00:30:27   didn't fix them and everything but like [TS]

00:30:29   it was clearly like production caliber [TS]

00:30:32   on the when it was released right and [TS]

00:30:34   even though they improve the next year [TS]

00:30:35   next year next year after that like I [TS]

00:30:37   think it was everyone was shocked by how [TS]

00:30:39   much of a non-issue was your just [TS]

00:30:41   encrypted yeah I check the checkbox and [TS]

00:30:43   password now just be encrypted [TS]

00:30:45   I don't even notice it doesn't affect my [TS]

00:30:46   life it's like magic that's that's [TS]

00:30:49   that's the way things should be [TS]

00:30:50   that's the way the new file doesn't will [TS]

00:30:51   be in 2017 right guys honestly I'm a [TS]

00:30:56   little scared because I I question [TS]

00:30:58   whether today's apple with what they're [TS]

00:31:02   showing us by their actions here [TS]

00:31:04   can they deliver a really big really [TS]

00:31:07   important stable new generation of [TS]

00:31:12   something something that large like can [TS]

00:31:15   Apple deliver a new file system for the [TS]

00:31:18   mac today when it was without massive [TS]

00:31:22   bugs have been working on it for like 20 [TS]

00:31:24   years now right now it's gotta be so [TS]

00:31:26   good now but where those people you know [TS]

00:31:29   what they will howl in how many [TS]

00:31:30   directions are those resources being [TS]

00:31:33   pulled right now we don't know if [TS]

00:31:34   there's any resources we don't have the [TS]

00:31:36   project we don't think that's true but [TS]

00:31:38   you know whatever whatever this is you [TS]

00:31:41   know if if there's a new file system [TS]

00:31:42   here [TS]

00:31:43   apple from five years ago might be able [TS]

00:31:45   to ship it and it might have worked but [TS]

00:31:47   I I really honestly I'm worried about [TS]

00:31:50   apple today about whether whether they [TS]

00:31:53   can do this kind of very large new [TS]

00:31:55   project on a platform on the mac on a [TS]

00:31:59   platform that they don't really seem to [TS]

00:32:01   be devoting substantial resources to [TS]

00:32:04   anymore [TS]

00:32:04   I think they're totally capable is just [TS]

00:32:06   a question of making the calm one to [TS]

00:32:09   pull the trigger that's all comes down [TS]

00:32:10   is it ready go the go/no-go decision is [TS]

00:32:12   it ready this year or is it not ready is [TS]

00:32:14   here you just make the right call on [TS]

00:32:16   that and it's like it's aight like the [TS]

00:32:18   whole the mac the whole mac is like disk [TS]

00:32:20   utility no one's in a big hurry like if [TS]

00:32:23   it's not ready don't ship it it's ready [TS]

00:32:25   ship it that's it because I totally the [TS]

00:32:27   capabilities are all even restore start [TS]

00:32:30   even with people get pulled off to work [TS]

00:32:31   on the mystical car whatever they're [TS]

00:32:32   doing all that doesn't push your dates [TS]

00:32:34   back that's all that should happen [TS]

00:32:36   well except that what I think we see now [TS]

00:32:37   that that today's Apple would what would [TS]

00:32:40   much rather get a ship date then ship [TS]

00:32:43   something perfect i think you're taking [TS]

00:32:45   this way too far when it comes to the [TS]

00:32:46   file second system example because the [TS]

00:32:48   file system is one of the basis of the [TS]

00:32:51   entire Mac pyramid I mean if you screw [TS]

00:32:54   that up [TS]

00:32:55   that's a big damn deal and I think that [TS]

00:32:59   Apple smart enough to realize that if [TS]

00:33:00   they're really gonna pull pull the [TS]

00:33:02   trigger on [TS]

00:33:03   a new file system if this is really [TS]

00:33:05   gonna happen kind of like what John was [TS]

00:33:07   saying minute ago [TS]

00:33:08   they're going to make sure that they are [TS]

00:33:09   ready and they are going to test this [TS]

00:33:12   knot out of that it's not the sort of [TS]

00:33:15   thing that you can just say we why not [TS]

00:33:18   you know and fire from the hip you let's [TS]

00:33:20   give it a shot let's see what happens [TS]

00:33:22   whenever they dress plus though [TS]

00:33:24   oh you guys don't you guys are gonna [TS]

00:33:26   tell you a little about what that was [TS]

00:33:27   like please please don't like sitting [TS]

00:33:29   around the fire kids yeah here we got [TS]

00:33:31   like grandpa tell you about the file [TS]

00:33:32   still so there was a you know there's FS [TS]

00:33:35   we're not gonna talk about that there's [TS]

00:33:36   HFS which was fine for a while and then [TS]

00:33:38   you know that was Michaels 8.1 i think [TS]

00:33:41   came out on that had a new file system [TS]

00:33:43   they're going hfs+ and if you had if you [TS]

00:33:46   are installing it on to an empty volume [TS]

00:33:49   you could format is hfs+ and install [TS]

00:33:51   your operating system and you'd be in [TS]

00:33:52   this brave new world right [TS]

00:33:53   they also had a feature this is my [TS]

00:33:55   recollection people can correct me if [TS]

00:33:56   i'm wrong i could be mixing up third [TS]

00:33:58   party stuff i'm pretty sure first party [TS]

00:33:59   had a feature where you could say I've [TS]

00:34:02   got an HFS disk and in those days like [TS]

00:34:04   this for tiny and they were always full [TS]

00:34:05   because they were tiny you could say i [TS]

00:34:08   want to upgrade to mac OS 8.1 and i [TS]

00:34:12   would also like you to change my volume [TS]

00:34:14   from HFS day to rest plus in place [TS]

00:34:17   change the format of the file system [TS]

00:34:19   without deleting my data to leave the [TS]

00:34:21   data there but convert the thing from a [TS]

00:34:24   tree festival address plus that sounds [TS]

00:34:26   like a bad idea that process as you [TS]

00:34:28   might imagine these were not days of [TS]

00:34:30   like a log structure file systems where [TS]

00:34:32   it's like right only file since you can [TS]

00:34:33   do this interview you can do is btrfs [TS]

00:34:35   and and lots of other things that [TS]

00:34:37   because of the way they're laid out in a [TS]

00:34:38   reasonably safe way but this was like a [TS]

00:34:41   literal like in place if you unplug your [TS]

00:34:44   computer in the middle of this or if [TS]

00:34:45   anything goes wrong [TS]

00:34:46   kiss your stuff goodbye hey and it was [TS]

00:34:50   terrifying with and we didn't have any [TS]

00:34:52   place that we couldn't do online backup [TS]

00:34:53   because for me anyway [TS]

00:34:54   most people do online right and didn't [TS]

00:34:57   have enough hard disk space to actually [TS]

00:34:58   make a real like no one had backup [TS]

00:35:00   because there was no way to backup like [TS]

00:35:02   I had one hard drive [TS]

00:35:04   alright had some multiple hard drives [TS]

00:35:05   they're all hope it's not like we're and [TS]

00:35:07   so it's been uphill both ways right and [TS]

00:35:09   so you want your choice like if you [TS]

00:35:10   wanted hfs+ and who didn't try to allow [TS]

00:35:12   to individual character filings and [TS]

00:35:14   you know anyway most of the good stuff [TS]

00:35:17   is also even exposed but the bottom line [TS]

00:35:19   is you could at least have a block size [TS]

00:35:20   that made it so you know a text file [TS]

00:35:22   with one bite and it didn't take up this [TS]

00:35:24   then obscene amount of space because [TS]

00:35:26   that was the problem of HFS is that as [TS]

00:35:28   the volumes got bigger the blocks I had [TS]

00:35:29   to grow proportionally and so no matter [TS]

00:35:31   how small you made your file your your [TS]

00:35:33   minimum file size kept going up and up [TS]

00:35:34   to a size that we wouldn't care about [TS]

00:35:36   today i think it was like we were all [TS]

00:35:38   set this was like 4k for you know a [TS]

00:35:40   single character fly like are born the [TS]

00:35:42   fork and I was too big anyway the [TS]

00:35:44   benefits weren't even all that great and [TS]

00:35:46   the risks were tremendous and if you [TS]

00:35:48   wanted to upgrade you had to either [TS]

00:35:51   erase your disk in which case you need [TS]

00:35:52   to have a backup or do this in place [TS]

00:35:54   back up and it was not it was [TS]

00:35:58   touch-and-go there for years and I mean [TS]

00:36:01   we provide here as much about it because [TS]

00:36:02   people are online as much back then and [TS]

00:36:04   talking to each other about that all the [TS]

00:36:06   problems that aren't hurting that but it [TS]

00:36:08   was really scary these days was gonna [TS]

00:36:10   say the case thing like all the sauces [TS]

00:36:12   and they're going to make sure it's [TS]

00:36:12   super safe remember hfs+ runs on the [TS]

00:36:15   phone too [TS]

00:36:16   so you're pretty much guaranteed that if [TS]

00:36:18   they are replacing it with anything [TS]

00:36:20   it's gonna you know like that's that's [TS]

00:36:22   bet the company kind of stuff there's no [TS]

00:36:24   way in hell they replace hfs+ with [TS]

00:36:27   anything else on the phone if they were [TS]

00:36:30   in damn sure that it fulfilled the [TS]

00:36:33   requirements of it so I have some faith [TS]

00:36:35   that we will not see a file system until [TS]

00:36:38   that happens to have faith that that [TS]

00:36:40   means the file system will be out in [TS]

00:36:42   2017 I don't know but like you know just [TS]

00:36:45   take your time get it right you know we [TS]

00:36:47   waited this long [TS]

00:36:48   right whatever our second sponsor this [TS]

00:36:52   week is a glue to glue software com / [TS]

00:36:55   ATP for the internet you will actually [TS]

00:36:58   like now if you work in a corporate [TS]

00:37:00   environment [TS]

00:37:01   Casey John you know how painful [TS]

00:37:03   internets can be and usually are the [TS]

00:37:05   contents stay all the interfaces ugly [TS]

00:37:07   you can't really do much of it but on [TS]

00:37:09   your phone or have any access at all [TS]

00:37:11   igloo is an internet you will actually [TS]

00:37:13   like designed by people who have like [TS]

00:37:15   modern sensibilities and who recognized [TS]

00:37:17   that mobile exists and there are [TS]

00:37:19   different screen sizes and you need to [TS]

00:37:20   do things in browsers a lot of times and [TS]

00:37:22   you know what decent easy-to-use design [TS]

00:37:25   might actually be something you should [TS]

00:37:27   consider for your internet [TS]

00:37:28   all these things seem obvious to you [TS]

00:37:29   know people like us who live in the real [TS]

00:37:31   world but for some reason internets [TS]

00:37:34   usually black these things a glue [TS]

00:37:36   actually pays attention to what people [TS]

00:37:38   want and what is good in the universe [TS]

00:37:40   and they implemented on their internet [TS]

00:37:42   that for you you know for your benefit [TS]

00:37:44   for your company [TS]

00:37:45   this is an easy-to-use collaboration [TS]

00:37:46   tool can help you do your best work you [TS]

00:37:48   can share files a bit with your team you [TS]

00:37:50   can coordinate calendars you managed [TS]

00:37:52   apartment projects and more whether [TS]

00:37:54   you're a large enterprise stuck using [TS]

00:37:55   SharePoint or fast-growing business [TS]

00:37:57   overwhelmed by file-sharing Calendar [TS]

00:37:59   apps and that's that that sounds called [TS]

00:38:02   the sharepoint sigh that's a think they [TS]

00:38:04   can run with that is a SharePoint site [TS]

00:38:05   but if you use a glue you will not have [TS]

00:38:08   the sharepoint side you would rejoice in [TS]

00:38:10   everything just working and being nice [TS]

00:38:12   which is something the internet users [TS]

00:38:14   have never had before so check it out [TS]

00:38:16   today go to a blue software.com / ATP [TS]

00:38:20   for a really really great secure nice [TS]

00:38:23   easy to use corporate internet and if [TS]

00:38:25   you have 10 or fewer people it's free [TS]

00:38:27   forever bigger teams you still get a [TS]

00:38:29   free trial so check it out today at a [TS]

00:38:32   blue software com / ATP start your free [TS]

00:38:35   trial thanks a lot to Italy for [TS]

00:38:36   sponsoring our show so John since you're [TS]

00:38:38   already a little bit fired up [TS]

00:38:40   tell me how it is you kind of just have [TS]

00:38:44   disk free blu rays how is that even [TS]

00:38:46   possible [TS]

00:38:47   I i were in a topic next all right [TS]

00:38:49   before we jumped out of the chatroom [TS]

00:38:50   wants to process and that's another [TS]

00:38:53   story for the youngins that you guys are [TS]

00:38:55   probably hard to not do it quickly back [TS]

00:38:57   to the fire [TS]

00:38:58   yeah the other the other fun thing about [TS]

00:39:00   the HRSA 4s plus conversion and remember [TS]

00:39:03   this is still too probably not but I [TS]

00:39:04   remember I there was some recent [TS]

00:39:06   articles like it came up again on the [TS]

00:39:07   modern internet like a couple years ago [TS]

00:39:09   so maybe you could find those blog posts [TS]

00:39:10   but anyway when it converted your disk [TS]

00:39:13   it would do this clever thing where it [TS]

00:39:16   would if this hfs+ disc with read by a [TS]

00:39:19   system that predates hfs+ rather than [TS]

00:39:21   saying this disc is unreadable would you [TS]

00:39:23   like to initialize as in like I have no [TS]

00:39:25   idea what the hell is disc is if the [TS]

00:39:27   disk would appear to older discs as an [TS]

00:39:30   HSS could have like this little [TS]

00:39:31   miniature HFS disc volume entry in it in [TS]

00:39:35   the place where old in a place where i [TS]

00:39:37   pre hfs+ it would look for it and the [TS]

00:39:40   only thing I disc was a little tiny [TS]

00:39:41   me file that explain what the hell hfs+ [TS]

00:39:43   is Mary all your crap went and it was [TS]

00:39:45   just like the ideal like cute little mac [TS]

00:39:48   thing where you wear instead of just you [TS]

00:39:50   know telling you everything is [TS]

00:39:52   initialized it and and you know telling [TS]

00:39:54   your disc is unreadable and scaring [TS]

00:39:55   people and tricking them into like [TS]

00:39:56   isolating the race but they don't know [TS]

00:39:58   what else to do your disk would mount [TS]

00:40:00   and you like where the hell's all my [TS]

00:40:01   stuff and you can see this one little [TS]

00:40:03   text one little readme file sitting [TS]

00:40:05   there and you know what else can you do [TS]

00:40:07   there but like I guess I'll read this [TS]

00:40:09   file maybe I'll tell visit I think it [TS]

00:40:11   was tall called it was like it was [TS]

00:40:13   something about like where my files go [TS]

00:40:15   over please read me or whatever like it [TS]

00:40:17   was it was trying to help you say look [TS]

00:40:19   here and we'll tell you what that's [TS]

00:40:20   going on it would say all this has been [TS]

00:40:22   four hrs position new formatting your [TS]

00:40:24   boot into an old system blah blah blah [TS]

00:40:26   that was like that's that's the that's [TS]

00:40:29   the good stuff that's the good Apple Mac [TS]

00:40:31   way kind of whimsical kind of fun [TS]

00:40:33   technically super clever because they [TS]

00:40:36   control everything top from top to [TS]

00:40:37   bottom they can do this they can say [TS]

00:40:39   we're going to define a new volume [TS]

00:40:41   format but we're going to leave a spot [TS]

00:40:43   for this little funny little wrapper and [TS]

00:40:44   I don't remember the rap when the rapper [TS]

00:40:46   went away or if it's still there it's [TS]

00:40:47   probably gone now but I i always like [TS]

00:40:50   that and that is I think the example of [TS]

00:40:52   apple at its best [TS]

00:40:53   so tell me John how do you handle [TS]

00:40:56   blu-rays these days this topic this [TS]

00:41:00   topic I try to handle them [TS]

00:41:01   not at all so we've talked about our [TS]

00:41:04   blu-rays a little bit as in like you [TS]

00:41:06   know where did you get this movie to you [TS]

00:41:08   you know [TS]

00:41:09   did you get an itunes how do you watch [TS]

00:41:10   movies or are different flex things [TS]

00:41:12   streaming things from netflix from HBO [TS]

00:41:16   Go all sorts of ways that we watch [TS]

00:41:19   television movies these days and I would [TS]

00:41:21   always try and a certain point of sale [TS]

00:41:23   I by the movies that I care about on [TS]

00:41:24   blu-ray because despite the fact that [TS]

00:41:26   blu-rays awful everybody knows blu-rays [TS]

00:41:29   awful for all the reasons that anyone [TS]

00:41:32   ever used a blue rhino's take million [TS]

00:41:34   years to load that you're waiting for [TS]

00:41:36   the menus too low to show you previews [TS]

00:41:38   that sometimes you can't skip you just [TS]

00:41:40   want to watch the movie that's a [TS]

00:41:42   spinning disk in there that probably [TS]

00:41:43   makes a noise or more noise than a [TS]

00:41:45   digital file anyway you have to this [TS]

00:41:48   kind of this case you gotta stick it [TS]

00:41:50   into a little you know like it's all [TS]

00:41:51   they still run java they are very often [TS]

00:41:53   they [TS]

00:41:54   look run java trying to download [TS]

00:41:55   something or you have compatibility [TS]

00:41:56   problems my favorite one is like I have [TS]

00:41:58   lots of fancy equipment that can in [TS]

00:42:00   theory play blu-rays and every once in a [TS]

00:42:02   while one of them will be like get me on [TS]

00:42:03   a menu screen where it won't let me [TS]

00:42:06   select the play button or well freeze on [TS]

00:42:08   a menu screen and it's just like this is [TS]

00:42:10   after you've SAT through previews are [TS]

00:42:12   trying to skip them to figure out which [TS]

00:42:13   button you have to hit to get past the [TS]

00:42:15   previews and connive and tracking ID top [TS]

00:42:17   menu tonight pop-up-menu you know like [TS]

00:42:18   and you get through that and then the [TS]

00:42:20   menu freezes you can't play i love [TS]

00:42:22   blu-ray is like it's like you know it's [TS]

00:42:24   like this committee looked at the DVD [TS]

00:42:27   format and they're like you know what [TS]

00:42:28   this needs more prohibited user [TS]

00:42:31   operations software updates and java [TS]

00:42:33   software like a running running software [TS]

00:42:37   its yeah so it's its intent incredibly [TS]

00:42:40   misguided customer hospital format and [TS]

00:42:44   and really like you just want to watch [TS]

00:42:45   the movie right now that's all that's [TS]

00:42:46   all you want you want the movie to start [TS]

00:42:48   playing now right so why do I keep [TS]

00:42:50   buying blu-rays I keep buying them [TS]

00:42:51   because it continues to be the highest [TS]

00:42:54   quality version of the above movie you [TS]

00:42:57   can get and I not always i care about [TS]

00:42:59   that a lot of movies especially kids [TS]

00:43:00   movies on i doing or whatever like you [TS]

00:43:02   know they're fine but for the movies I [TS]

00:43:03   really care about [TS]

00:43:04   I want the highest quality version that [TS]

00:43:07   i can buy with a regular consumer can [TS]

00:43:08   about and blu-rays that blu-ray discs [TS]

00:43:10   are huge you can get a blu-ray movie [TS]

00:43:12   that's like tens of gigabytes [TS]

00:43:14   yes they're still compresses like it's [TS]

00:43:16   on your breasts that but they're [TS]

00:43:17   compressed a higher bitrate with better [TS]

00:43:19   algorithms and like they are you know [TS]

00:43:21   they have someone have uncompressed [TS]

00:43:23   audio on them or you know multiple [TS]

00:43:25   higher resolution audio tracks and all [TS]

00:43:27   sorts of good things about us it is it [TS]

00:43:29   is the best copy of a movie you can get [TS]

00:43:31   so all the movies i care about I get on [TS]

00:43:34   blu-ray [TS]

00:43:35   so all the movies that I really really [TS]

00:43:37   you know appreciate then I and I have a [TS]

00:43:40   setup that can play them correctly in my [TS]

00:43:41   fancy TV and everything's good except of [TS]

00:43:44   course I hate blu-ray so what I'm always [TS]

00:43:45   looking for not like really actively but [TS]

00:43:47   just like be on the lookout for this is [TS]

00:43:50   the point where i can take my blu-rays [TS]

00:43:53   and get the bits off of them and put [TS]

00:43:57   them onto a hard drive somewhere and [TS]

00:44:00   then watch them from that hard drive now [TS]

00:44:02   all the menus are godless I'm just [TS]

00:44:03   the movie all the stupid menus all the [TS]

00:44:05   FBI warnings all the Java applets all [TS]

00:44:08   the previews is all that is gone they [TS]

00:44:10   are you confessing to a felony [TS]

00:44:11   I don't know and I just want the bits [TS]

00:44:14   off of the disk and then I want to be [TS]

00:44:18   able to play those bits and have it be [TS]

00:44:20   exactly the same as it would be if i put [TS]

00:44:22   the the the blu-ray into the dr except [TS]

00:44:26   without all the bad parts and I have all [TS]

00:44:29   these boxes connected to my television [TS]

00:44:32   and I've got my pic synology down there [TS]

00:44:34   that's got a lot of room on it and like [TS]

00:44:35   i said i've not been actively seeking [TS]

00:44:37   this out but I figured a certain point [TS]

00:44:38   just from my normal churn of the various [TS]

00:44:41   boxes that are attached to my TV i will [TS]

00:44:43   probably eventually get to the point [TS]

00:44:44   where this is the thing that can happen [TS]

00:44:45   and i thought i might have been at that [TS]

00:44:48   point because as we've discussed on past [TS]

00:44:49   shows i'm running plex on my new apple [TS]

00:44:52   TV and I finally got my plex library [TS]

00:44:54   kind of an order and you lots of things [TS]

00:44:59   have flex clients might even as the plex [TS]

00:45:01   client my television can read things [TS]

00:45:03   directly off the synology off the server [TS]

00:45:04   that it runs my apple TV box can do it [TS]

00:45:06   like I have so many different choices i [TS]

00:45:08   can i can run the server on off my [TS]

00:45:09   computer which by the way I don't [TS]

00:45:12   encourage people to do this and maybe [TS]

00:45:13   it's not recommended but if you have an [TS]

00:45:15   ass you can mount your nest on your mac [TS]

00:45:18   and then run flex on your mac with the [TS]

00:45:21   nass mounted where all your like your [TS]

00:45:24   video is that's exactly what i do right [TS]

00:45:27   but you can also have like synology has [TS]

00:45:29   applek server on it so i have a place [TS]

00:45:31   server on mine ass and I have another [TS]

00:45:34   black server on my mac both of which are [TS]

00:45:37   pointing to the exact same video files [TS]

00:45:38   and the more or less stay in sync with [TS]

00:45:40   each other like they don't fight each [TS]

00:45:41   other and everything and so why would [TS]

00:45:43   you do that why would you choose between [TS]

00:45:44   them well I don't like that the back on [TS]

00:45:46   all the time but if there's something [TS]

00:45:47   that needs some kind of heavy [TS]

00:45:48   transcoding to be able to play at all [TS]

00:45:50   the mac and handle it and and this [TS]

00:45:51   analogy might not be able to sew and [TS]

00:45:54   really just don't know I'm just playing [TS]

00:45:55   with things anyway so that's the [TS]

00:45:57   situation and i figured i think i'm at [TS]

00:46:00   the point where i can do this now so i [TS]

00:46:01   bought myself like a fifty-dollar you [TS]

00:46:03   know blu-ray drive that's how cheap they [TS]

00:46:05   are these days for your computer you [TS]

00:46:06   know just like a little thing you put a [TS]

00:46:08   little radio mix up the USB get back her [TS]

00:46:10   I'm yep and then and then get you know [TS]

00:46:13   make MTV or some other program that [TS]

00:46:15   that you're going to ask to you know my [TS]

00:46:17   say I'm gonna rip my blu-rays but i'm [TS]

00:46:19   not really coding them i am not running [TS]

00:46:22   them through compression algorithms I [TS]

00:46:23   just want to bits off the disk exactly [TS]

00:46:25   as they are not changed in any possible [TS]

00:46:27   way right because isn't that exactly [TS]

00:46:29   what I'm what make him Cavey does yeah [TS]

00:46:32   that I think people have workflows we're [TS]

00:46:33   like it goes through this whole process [TS]

00:46:35   and actually rewrite that we talked to [TS]

00:46:37   Don melitón about how what is what is [TS]

00:46:40   for closers only [TS]

00:46:41   he's always reading coding all his [TS]

00:46:42   movies and I'm like so do you have the [TS]

00:46:43   original uncompressed thing somewhere [TS]

00:46:45   you just that's your input or do you do [TS]

00:46:47   you feed discs in forever I don't know [TS]

00:46:48   it does but anyway yeah make MKV will [TS]

00:46:50   let you select which tracks you want [TS]

00:46:52   that thing and we'll just pull them off [TS]

00:46:53   exactly as that our bit for bit which is [TS]

00:46:55   exactly what I want [TS]

00:46:56   not for all my movies again like you [TS]

00:46:58   have most of the things like that don't [TS]

00:46:59   care that much about buying itunes are [TS]

00:47:01   watching netflix don't have to store [TS]

00:47:02   them at all but for the you know the [TS]

00:47:03   handful of like my very very favorite [TS]

00:47:05   movies right and i did this seemed to go [TS]

00:47:09   ok like i just did it for like two or [TS]

00:47:10   three experimental movies often blue [TS]

00:47:12   right and that you know getting huge [TS]

00:47:14   like 20 or 30 gigabytes I can you know [TS]

00:47:16   you can around describes real fast if [TS]

00:47:18   you take your you know movie library of [TS]

00:47:20   300 movies and just do the math you will [TS]

00:47:22   see that you will take a lot of room [TS]

00:47:23   I was doing a couple of them i thought [TS]

00:47:26   was home free cuz i'm like great at the [TS]

00:47:28   bits off the disk [TS]

00:47:30   I've got a million places i can put [TS]

00:47:31   these bits that i can play them i can [TS]

00:47:33   put them on flex Emma and how to serve [TS]

00:47:35   my macbook complex answer my synology i [TS]

00:47:37   can put them on my synology haven't [TS]

00:47:38   served from DLNA server on my television [TS]

00:47:40   I can play them from my playstation 3 I [TS]

00:47:43   could play them from PlayStation 4 it [TS]

00:47:44   was hooked up to my collection but it's [TS]

00:47:45   not my could play them from my apple TV [TS]

00:47:47   i complaining from the television itself [TS]

00:47:49   like you know that ipod can play them [TS]

00:47:52   from the the wii u if I wanted to who [TS]

00:47:54   knows what they have value designs so [TS]

00:47:55   many options sound like surely one of [TS]

00:47:57   these will work to do what i want and [TS]

00:48:00   they almost do they're really close [TS]

00:48:02   really close but I had forgotten about [TS]

00:48:04   two things 1i had I mean I didn't really [TS]

00:48:08   forget about this but I figured [TS]

00:48:09   something i would have work I've [TS]

00:48:10   forgotten about 24 frames per second [TS]

00:48:13   cadence movies most movies that that we [TS]

00:48:17   know of a the the people like these days [TS]

00:48:20   are shot at 24 frames per second for a [TS]

00:48:21   variety of historical reasons and most [TS]

00:48:25   televisions for a different variety of [TS]

00:48:26   historical reasons most flat-screen [TS]

00:48:28   televisions [TS]

00:48:29   I show it a new frame i had some [TS]

00:48:33   multiple that 24 is not going to evenly [TS]

00:48:35   so they may be [TS]

00:48:37   yeah well then I six years these days [TS]

00:48:39   but like well aren't there a hundred and [TS]

00:48:43   twenty-one today this is that is 120 and [TS]

00:48:45   240 and stuff like that right so if you [TS]

00:48:47   have on the television and you can get [TS]

00:48:48   24 into it even though you're fine but [TS]

00:48:49   if you're like me and you have a plasma [TS]

00:48:51   television that doesn't have it doesn't [TS]

00:48:53   display at you know what does if you [TS]

00:48:56   have a device doesn't help putting [TS]

00:48:57   multiple 24 as usual but it's not so [TS]

00:48:59   much the television set [TS]

00:49:00   so the best example is the apple TV [TS]

00:49:02   which I believe output 60 Hertz which is [TS]

00:49:04   what all r max output at like 60 60 [TS]

00:49:06   refresh your screen each second right [TS]

00:49:08   and if you've got 24 frames of video and [TS]

00:49:11   you're trying to put it out over a [TS]

00:49:12   connection that's going to show 60 [TS]

00:49:14   frames every second [TS]

00:49:15   the math doesn't work out for you there [TS]

00:49:17   so you have to you because you can't [TS]

00:49:19   show like so you have a frame number 14 [TS]

00:49:21   in order to frame number three you what [TS]

00:49:24   they end up doing is this your friend [TS]

00:49:25   number 13 x is your friend number 22 x [TS]

00:49:28   is your friend number 33 times and it's [TS]

00:49:29   like 32 32 32 32 and that's not what you [TS]

00:49:34   want because you showing your showing [TS]

00:49:36   the frames and uneven number x is [TS]

00:49:37   supposed to be one frame for one [TS]

00:49:39   twenty-fourth of a second then the next [TS]

00:49:40   frame for one twenty-fourth of a second [TS]

00:49:42   every frame should be shown for exactly [TS]

00:49:43   the same amount of time but if you're if [TS]

00:49:45   you're sending 60 update the second you [TS]

00:49:46   just can't do that with 24 frames per [TS]

00:49:47   second right and it doesn't matter what [TS]

00:49:49   your television does if the output [TS]

00:49:51   devices like now very clever modern [TS]

00:49:53   televisions have a thing where they will [TS]

00:49:54   do they will do 322 cadence detection [TS]

00:49:57   well they will figure out seems like [TS]

00:49:58   this device is sending me like one frame [TS]

00:50:00   three times that never changes and the [TS]

00:50:02   next moment x me two times and that one [TS]

00:50:03   is the same for the two things and then [TS]

00:50:05   it sends me the next frame three times [TS]

00:50:06   the next 12 I see what's going on there [TS]

00:50:08   and it fixes it for you it really [TS]

00:50:11   expands the frame rate and and displays [TS]

00:50:13   them because it has a refresh rate [TS]

00:50:14   that's a multiple 24 and you're fine and [TS]

00:50:16   then when you actually look at the [TS]

00:50:17   television it shows you train for [TS]

00:50:18   exactly the same amount of time every [TS]

00:50:20   frame comes on for one twenty-fourth of [TS]

00:50:22   a second [TS]

00:50:22   that's awesome i don't know TV for that [TS]

00:50:24   smart yeah I mine doesn't do that [TS]

00:50:27   because it's not a not that smart and be [TS]

00:50:29   like that process as you can imagine is [TS]

00:50:31   kind of like the detecting that and [TS]

00:50:32   handling it correctly is potentially [TS]

00:50:34   problematic so what you really want is [TS]

00:50:36   for the device that you're playing the [TS]

00:50:38   movie on to say look I'm gonna send it [TS]

00:50:41   at [TS]

00:50:41   not a 24-second but at 24 frames per [TS]

00:50:44   second cadence so I'm gonna send you [TS]

00:50:45   some multiples 24 right whether i can't [TS]

00:50:48   do the math in my head for that is 96 [TS]

00:50:50   multiple or 120 or 240 or whatever yes [TS]

00:50:53   anyway I'm gonna send you some multiples [TS]

00:50:55   24 and and then you television realize [TS]

00:50:59   that i'm sending to you with this frame [TS]

00:51:00   rate and display television decide to [TS]

00:51:02   update exactly this thing so if i send [TS]

00:51:04   you [TS]

00:51:05   96 hurts television pls display 96 hurts [TS]

00:51:08   and everyone's fine and so like frame [TS]

00:51:11   for number one is shown you know three [TS]

00:51:12   or four times every day that you all the [TS]

00:51:14   frames field that's what it says 24 [TS]

00:51:16   frames like they don't mean that your [TS]

00:51:17   television is updating 24 times a second [TS]

00:51:19   look terrible for most television [TS]

00:51:21   technologies all they mean is the [TS]

00:51:22   decadence is correct that the first [TS]

00:51:25   frame is gone for one twenty-fourth of a [TS]

00:51:26   second exactly the second perimeter on [TS]

00:51:28   for one twenty-fourth of a second [TS]

00:51:29   exactly that's what you want to happen [TS]

00:51:31   and when I put a blu-ray player in my [TS]

00:51:33   playstation 3 it does exactly that it [TS]

00:51:36   sends it out 24 frames per second cannes [TS]

00:51:38   my television realizes that the [TS]

00:51:40   PlayStation wants to talk to it that way [TS]

00:51:41   they negotiate over hdmi hdmi television [TS]

00:51:44   changes to be in exactly 24 frames per [TS]

00:51:46   second kids that is the only way you see [TS]

00:51:48   a blu-ray the way it's supposed to look [TS]

00:51:50   without what they call shudders shudders [TS]

00:51:51   but what they call it when you see the [TS]

00:51:53   32 32 32 times especially when they have [TS]

00:51:56   like a pan or some quick motion where it [TS]

00:51:58   seems herky-jerky because it because it [TS]

00:52:00   is your keys it's not smooth motion [TS]

00:52:01   they're not showing you train for one [TS]

00:52:03   twenty-fourth of a second i thought [TS]

00:52:05   surely I have some box they can take [TS]

00:52:07   this 24 homers second blu-rays show it [TS]

00:52:09   like that but it turns out for the most [TS]

00:52:12   part I don't the appletv won't do it [TS]

00:52:14   because the apple TV has a fixed refresh [TS]

00:52:17   rate and for whatever reason my [TS]

00:52:19   television does not detect that is [TS]

00:52:21   getting 32 and it can't reverse the [TS]

00:52:23   process [TS]

00:52:24   I don't think there's anything i can do [TS]

00:52:25   on my appletv to convince it to output [TS]

00:52:27   at 96 or 48 or something like that [TS]

00:52:31   the the last form entry i saw from some [TS]

00:52:34   apple person answering basically said [TS]

00:52:35   applications the apple TV you have no [TS]

00:52:38   power to affect that what's going out or [TS]

00:52:40   the hdmi cable like the refresh rate [TS]

00:52:41   they can't change that that's just it's [TS]

00:52:43   fixed and it's part of the OS it's [TS]

00:52:45   possible future OS update could change [TS]

00:52:47   to either let applications control that [TS]

00:52:49   or let that users control it with some [TS]

00:52:52   setting or something but right now [TS]

00:52:53   it doesn't and how do i know that my [TS]

00:52:56   television isn't correctly detecting the [TS]

00:52:58   three two canes and fixing it for me [TS]

00:53:00   you can kind of tell by looking like [TS]

00:53:02   scenes in movies and pans or whatever [TS]

00:53:04   but this is a much easier way to tell [TS]

00:53:05   there's a lot of little test movies that [TS]

00:53:07   you can download that show for example a [TS]

00:53:09   white box marching across the screen and [TS]

00:53:12   for you know for the first frame the [TS]

00:53:14   white boxes on the left and the next [TS]

00:53:15   frame the white boxes moved one unit [TS]

00:53:17   over the next time so you see 24 boxes [TS]

00:53:18   which light up one after the other [TS]

00:53:20   what each frame one of the boxes lit up [TS]

00:53:22   all you do is take your fancy market are [TS]

00:53:25   meant expensive camera and figure out [TS]

00:53:27   how to change the shutter speed to [TS]

00:53:28   exactly one second you play that movie [TS]

00:53:30   on your television you take a picture [TS]

00:53:32   your television with the shutter with [TS]

00:53:33   exposure time of one second then you [TS]

00:53:36   look at the picture if your if your [TS]

00:53:38   television is doing the right thing you [TS]

00:53:40   see 24 grayish boxes that look exactly [TS]

00:53:42   the same brightness because every single [TS]

00:53:44   one of those squares on screen for [TS]

00:53:45   exactly one twenty-fourth of a second [TS]

00:53:47   one twenty-fourth of a second the same [TS]

00:53:48   exposure on the on your camera sensor so [TS]

00:53:51   that's what you should see if it's doing [TS]

00:53:54   it wrong [TS]

00:53:54   what you'll see is bright squared M [TS]

00:53:56   square bright squared M square bright [TS]

00:53:57   scared to square the bright ones were [TS]

00:53:59   the ones that were showing for three [TS]

00:54:00   frames and the demons are the ones that [TS]

00:54:01   were shown from two frames so just to be [TS]

00:54:03   a double extra sure I experiment [TS]

00:54:04   determined that yes no combination of [TS]

00:54:06   apple TV plus black course you did [TS]

00:54:08   will produce anything except for the one [TS]

00:54:11   I had like a clock dial to which also [TS]

00:54:12   made the hands go around the clock and [TS]

00:54:14   24 not the clock but like a thing in 24 [TS]

00:54:16   increments and USC right-hand dark and [TS]

00:54:18   bright and dark and it was such a pain [TS]

00:54:20   in the ass to figure out how to get my [TS]

00:54:21   camera to do exposure one second cause I [TS]

00:54:23   don't know any of like the terminology [TS]

00:54:25   and camera and I was like s shutter [TS]

00:54:27   shutter speed exposure like ones and the [TS]

00:54:32   the correct setting i remember what the [TS]

00:54:33   hell was called the correct settings [TS]

00:54:34   said one and like the inch sign like a [TS]

00:54:37   quote we actually like that seconds [TS]

00:54:40   that's not I mean I guess minutes is a [TS]

00:54:42   single prime and seconds because [TS]

00:54:44   normally it's showing you a showing you [TS]

00:54:46   a fraction of a second and most other [TS]

00:54:47   cases it will say like umit and it might [TS]

00:54:49   just say like 500 which is 1 500 of a [TS]

00:54:52   set of a second so they do a little [TS]

00:54:54   quote thing just I i think it is like a [TS]

00:54:57   degree minutes seconds kind of reference [TS]

00:54:59   there yeah but it's exciting it's more [TS]

00:55:01   just to be very different from what was [TS]

00:55:03   shown before so you don't have like five [TS]

00:55:06   and think it's one fifth of a second [TS]

00:55:07   yeah very very confusing people don't [TS]

00:55:09   know for target but anyway LTV no go [TS]

00:55:12   which is a shame because that's what I [TS]

00:55:13   wanted to do apple TV has no fan it's [TS]

00:55:15   got flex on that I could put my my [TS]

00:55:17   bloopers you know that's why i put my [TS]

00:55:18   blue ridge right into blacks place we'll [TS]

00:55:20   play them just fine I can you know it [TS]

00:55:21   will play the movie but don't get the [TS]

00:55:22   right Kayden's did your family see you [TS]

00:55:24   doing this test now then that was they [TS]

00:55:28   weren't around this time only maybe they [TS]

00:55:29   were asleep [TS]

00:55:30   it's a silent test and so but I i asked [TS]

00:55:36   about it on Twitter got some suggestions [TS]

00:55:37   like oh you should try on your TV I'd [TS]

00:55:39   forgotten my tivo even had a plaque sign [TS]

00:55:40   but guess what TVs a plex client it is [TS]

00:55:43   HD does it slow [TS]

00:55:45   it's slow but it will output 24 hurts [TS]

00:55:48   and it will you will negotiate with my [TS]

00:55:50   television and convince my television to [TS]

00:55:52   display that I mean it says 24 but again [TS]

00:55:54   it's not really 24 a lapper at 24 frames [TS]

00:55:56   per second cadence but everything else [TS]

00:55:58   about it is awful i think it's only 720p [TS]

00:56:00   so I think it's like reconverting the [TS]

00:56:03   video at the very least the menus appear [TS]

00:56:07   to be 720p and it down mixes all the [TS]

00:56:09   audio to something like stereo like it [TS]

00:56:11   doesn't multi-channel all I think the [TS]

00:56:14   closest I got was i had managed to [TS]

00:56:17   forget which one it was the do this i [TS]

00:56:20   think i had managed through like the [TS]

00:56:22   playstation 3 which is my good blu-ray [TS]

00:56:24   player that does that the Great Danes I [TS]

00:56:25   think I got everything except for it [TS]

00:56:27   wouldn't do uncompressed the linear PCM [TS]

00:56:30   audio which the kill bill blu-ray has on [TS]

00:56:32   it it would only do the AC 31 and I [TS]

00:56:36   wasn't entirely convinced that have [TS]

00:56:37   gotten the kids ready don't remember i [TS]

00:56:39   redo the tests on that but following is [TS]

00:56:41   none of the devices i had fulfill this [TS]

00:56:43   requirement and I don't really blame [TS]

00:56:44   them because this is not a mainstream [TS]

00:56:46   use nobody cares about this they just [TS]

00:56:48   want like if you drive I just ripped [TS]

00:56:50   these movies and just play them like [TS]

00:56:51   regular people can't tell the [TS]

00:56:52   application is wrong kids is wrong they [TS]

00:56:54   don't care that they've been [TS]

00:56:55   recompressed nobody can hear the [TS]

00:56:57   difference in compressed and [TS]

00:56:58   uncompressed audio I certainly can't on [TS]

00:56:59   my crappy speakers but it's the [TS]

00:57:01   principle of the matter as you can [TS]

00:57:03   imagine and and i really do think that I [TS]

00:57:05   wouldn't notice the case in the same way [TS]

00:57:06   you can I was like so Barbara fact or [TS]

00:57:07   whatever I really do want the framerate [TS]

00:57:09   to rewrite and the whole point of this [TS]

00:57:10   experiment is if I can't get it all the [TS]

00:57:13   way then like i'll just go back to [TS]

00:57:14   watching complete i do have compressed [TS]

00:57:15   strips of all these things like I can't [TS]

00:57:17   see the movie and I can put in the [TS]

00:57:18   blu-ray whenever [TS]

00:57:19   they care about it right but I'm so [TS]

00:57:21   close so close so many devices are [TS]

00:57:24   capable of doing everything they just [TS]

00:57:26   haven't got the last little bit which is [TS]

00:57:28   please pass through the audio in [TS]

00:57:31   whatever format is directly to my [TS]

00:57:32   receiver which can understand all these [TS]

00:57:34   formats you can play all them please [TS]

00:57:36   don't try to down mix please don't [TS]

00:57:37   refuse to use linear people your PCM [TS]

00:57:40   only send ac3 please don't do anything [TS]

00:57:42   like that [TS]

00:57:42   please don't change the video please [TS]

00:57:44   don't try to change the 720p and get the [TS]

00:57:47   get the the display cases right between [TS]

00:57:49   the television which totally supports [TS]

00:57:51   this if you talk to it in a reasonable [TS]

00:57:52   way he talked to television the right [TS]

00:57:55   way and I got a lot of suggestions for [TS]

00:57:58   alternatives that will do this [TS]

00:57:59   obviously if i was to get home theater [TS]

00:58:01   pc i can do it like lots of mac and pc [TS]

00:58:03   solutions do this [TS]

00:58:04   obviously i'm not going to do that even [TS]

00:58:05   a fanless 1 i'm not gonna kill myself [TS]

00:58:07   home theater PC I'm not signing up for [TS]

00:58:10   everyone even yourself a gaming pc even [TS]

00:58:12   though you really probably should use [TS]

00:58:13   you won't even do that so there's no way [TS]

00:58:15   you're building an htpc Firewatch is [TS]

00:58:17   pretty smooth on the 5ki maximize that [TS]

00:58:19   tell you it's pretty nice [TS]

00:58:21   I'm not that's very demanding game but [TS]

00:58:22   yeah I'm not signing up to that guy [TS]

00:58:24   don't know I know I could do that I [TS]

00:58:25   definitely could lot of people suggested [TS]

00:58:27   Raspberry Pi which is actually I [TS]

00:58:28   actually kind of considered is like you [TS]

00:58:30   know what that is that seems simpler [TS]

00:58:31   than the theater pc can they do that at [TS]

00:58:34   like a powerful enough to do that kind [TS]

00:58:35   of roll with people who are people are [TS]

00:58:37   using for that say it might be [TS]

00:58:38   borderline but it is I was like is there [TS]

00:58:40   something i can buy like can i buy a [TS]

00:58:42   package thing that is really a raspberry [TS]

00:58:44   pi all packaged together already like I [TS]

00:58:46   don't want to do any of the crap is like [TS]

00:58:47   a raspberry pi guts in a box that i can [TS]

00:58:49   buy and mostly like know you kind of got [TS]

00:58:51   to do a little bit of stuff yourself so [TS]

00:58:53   like now I'm not quite for me there's [TS]

00:58:55   the android shield you know that Nvidia [TS]

00:58:58   shield TV thing which runs android TV [TS]

00:59:00   very recently and fire TV both now I [TS]

00:59:04   believe have options to mess with the [TS]

00:59:06   refresh rate so you can force it to [TS]

00:59:08   output in in the right format but there [TS]

00:59:10   were some questions about whether they [TS]

00:59:11   supported the the the pastor of the [TS]

00:59:13   audio and everything and the Nvidia [TS]

00:59:15   shield is like 200 bucks and it's a [TS]

00:59:17   gaming think it's not just for [TS]

00:59:18   television box and it does have a fan [TS]

00:59:19   although people assure me that the fan [TS]

00:59:21   basically never turns on or inaudible or [TS]

00:59:23   whatever you would find when it turns on [TS]

00:59:25   it is it's big it's like a means for its [TS]

00:59:28   it's practically a little miniature game [TS]

00:59:29   console so that I think that's the [TS]

00:59:31   closest thing I came to consider [TS]

00:59:32   buying but i really i don't want to have [TS]

00:59:35   I think I'm almost out of inputs and I [TS]

00:59:37   don't want to blow one more input on [TS]

00:59:38   something like this and have one more [TS]

00:59:40   remote and one more controller and thing [TS]

00:59:42   or whatever so right now I'm holding [TS]

00:59:44   pattern on this I haven't ripped anymore [TS]

00:59:46   my blu-rays does take a little while to [TS]

00:59:48   do that I think I'm pinning my hopes [TS]

00:59:51   basically on the appletv I feel like [TS]

00:59:52   they're really close to getting it right [TS]

00:59:54   and people have complained Apple about [TS]

00:59:56   not supporting this I think we even talk [TS]

00:59:56   not supporting this I think we even talk [TS]

01:00:00   but i like the reason they might not do [TS]

01:00:01   it is well if you change to 24 frames [TS]

01:00:05   per second cadence the GUI looks gross [TS]

01:00:06   like on the actual device when you're [TS]

01:00:08   going to the menus and I don't want to [TS]

01:00:09   change it when you hit play because it's [TS]

01:00:11   not a good experience that like flickr [TS]

01:00:13   hdmi refresh rate change thingy i can i [TS]

01:00:17   can see the solution being that they [TS]

01:00:18   would just offer 120 and then you know [TS]

01:00:21   and then you know and they would say i'm [TS]

01:00:22   sending you 120 for everything and the [TS]

01:00:24   whole UI 120 that doesn't mean but the [TS]

01:00:26   24-second this doesn't mean 24 [TS]

01:00:29   I mean it just means like that you're at [TS]

01:00:31   cadence but I I don't know if the the [TS]

01:00:34   portions of the GUI system like that [TS]

01:00:36   when you're running the mac part of it i [TS]

01:00:38   don't know if the mac operating system [TS]

01:00:41   can operate that kind of refresh it like [TS]

01:00:43   this but i understand i could do a video [TS]

01:00:45   output like negotiating over hdmi and [TS]

01:00:47   everything but for the GUI part of it [TS]

01:00:49   have you to the mac do anything like 240 [TS]

01:00:52   frames per second or 128gb tips as a can [TS]

01:00:55   I guess we've never encountered because [TS]

01:00:56   obviously every LCD is 60 hearts right [TS]

01:00:58   so whenever it doesn't come up with like [TS]

01:00:59   the old CRT days where you know fancy [TS]

01:01:01   CRT you could refresh it 120 hertz and [TS]

01:01:03   everything be so smooth and awesome and [TS]

01:01:05   a little bit dim thats kinda flickery [TS]

01:01:07   but will the ipad pro has dynamic [TS]

01:01:09   refresh rate and i think is so in and [TS]

01:01:12   it's samples like that the digitizer at [TS]

01:01:14   60 and and and I mean at-at I think 120 [TS]

01:01:17   and the pencil i think it to 40 so it [TS]

01:01:20   can sample things faster but it's only [TS]

01:01:23   displaying 60 yeah i think the you is [TS]

01:01:25   even on the ipad pro even in those [TS]

01:01:27   movies think the U is still fix 260 but [TS]

01:01:30   I'm sure they could you know if they [TS]

01:01:32   wanted to I'm sure they could you know [TS]

01:01:34   they could push for that for something [TS]

01:01:35   like the appletv we're like you know the [TS]

01:01:37   apple TV is kind of special because it's [TS]

01:01:39   the only device that runs iOS that [TS]

01:01:42   doesn't need to be concerned at all [TS]

01:01:44   about power efficiency [TS]

01:01:45   yeah so it's something that just needs a [TS]

01:01:47   higher higher wattage GPU or more power [TS]

01:01:50   draw like on the appletv you can do that [TS]

01:01:53   with it we know within obviously the the [TS]

01:01:54   thermal bounds of the enclosure but but [TS]

01:01:57   you know it's you you have much more [TS]

01:01:58   Headroom there that you do in something [TS]

01:02:00   like an iPad and iPhone were where power [TS]

01:02:02   efficiency is more important to to [TS]

01:02:05   conserve I'm a little bit afraid they [TS]

01:02:07   might not consider an issue because from [TS]

01:02:09   the other people who are like me trying [TS]

01:02:11   to do some other [TS]

01:02:12   with apple TV boxes a lot of them ran [TS]

01:02:14   the experiment with the camera exposure [TS]

01:02:15   and they saw even evenly colored boxes [TS]

01:02:19   across the screen which means they're [TS]

01:02:21   these are people LCD televisions their [TS]

01:02:23   modern lcds are figuring out the 3-2 [TS]

01:02:26   coming off of the the I assume 60 Hertz [TS]

01:02:28   coming out of the apple TV and they're [TS]

01:02:29   fixing it right and so if that's the [TS]

01:02:32   case maybe that sample solution is like [TS]

01:02:33   that which is always going to be 60 [TS]

01:02:34   thousand have to deal with it but if I [TS]

01:02:37   was any hope it's going to be the thing [TS]

01:02:38   connected to a TV like this whole point [TS]

01:02:40   is to show television and movies and [TS]

01:02:41   movies are all 24 frames per second [TS]

01:02:43   except like The Hobbit and stuff and all [TS]

01:02:44   hot behind program right stuff right we [TS]

01:02:46   should already hated right I didn't hate [TS]

01:02:48   it like it looked a little bit weird but [TS]

01:02:52   I'm Brian would be pretty much i'm bored [TS]

01:02:54   and wanted to make movies like that they [TS]

01:02:55   just got to figure out how to make [TS]

01:02:56   movies like that in the hit in the right [TS]

01:02:59   way [TS]

01:03:00   it's like HD like all of a sudden all [TS]

01:03:01   your assets look really crappy and HD [TS]

01:03:03   because the sets are made for standard [TS]

01:03:04   def and now you realize it's like a [TS]

01:03:05   cardboard box and effect television in [TS]

01:03:07   the background so I do not hate high [TS]

01:03:10   frame rate but i think those examples of [TS]

01:03:12   high frame rate or did not do the [TS]

01:03:15   formatting justice i feel like it could [TS]

01:03:16   be done well but anyway that's like [TS]

01:03:19   little you know the movies i love and so [TS]

01:03:21   many movies that have their all 24 so I [TS]

01:03:23   want somebody to display them in that [TS]

01:03:25   way and so i guess like the filesystem i [TS]

01:03:28   will just be patiently waiting at [TS]

01:03:30   certain point i will probably just give [TS]

01:03:31   up and buy like you know the Nvidia [TS]

01:03:34   shield or something some box that can do [TS]

01:03:35   that i don't think i'll ever do a home [TS]

01:03:36   theater PC because i wanted to that [TS]

01:03:38   wasn't that long ago like I could have [TS]

01:03:40   done ages ago I just I just ever so [TS]

01:03:43   close just so close to getting what I [TS]

01:03:44   want just you just need a little bit [TS]

01:03:47   more and the those clients out there [TS]

01:03:49   that are like like that the t-bone that [TS]

01:03:51   you're down makes everything starts like [TS]

01:03:53   why even bother like I known most people [TS]

01:03:55   don't have surround fine you can have [TS]

01:03:57   that be the default like happen because [TS]

01:03:59   it takes more work to down mix like just [TS]

01:04:01   pass it through like have an option to [TS]

01:04:02   say hey if they're sending multi-channel [TS]

01:04:04   audio do you want me to just pass that [TS]

01:04:05   through because you have received a [TS]

01:04:06   check this checkbox it's easier to pass [TS]

01:04:08   it through this is the down makes it so [TS]

01:04:10   there's some silliness going on in the [TS]

01:04:12   table TV box market as always but anyway [TS]

01:04:16   I was impressed [TS]

01:04:17   I've still remain impressed with Plex in [TS]

01:04:19   Apple TV combination for television [TS]

01:04:21   shows and other things that don't have [TS]

01:04:23   sprained right issue but i still can't [TS]

01:04:25   quite get rid of my blu-rays and my [TS]

01:04:27   relatively noisy blu-ray player quite [TS]

01:04:29   yet you know if there's anything I've [TS]

01:04:32   learned from listening to you talk about [TS]

01:04:34   this John and and Marco talking about [TS]

01:04:36   headphones constantly it's that I am so [TS]

01:04:40   friggin glad that I don't have the crazy [TS]

01:04:44   discerning eyes / ears that you guys [TS]

01:04:47   have because i have never noticed this [TS]

01:04:51   this Jake eNOS that you're discussing i [TS]

01:04:53   love my twenty-dollar crappy bluetooth [TS]

01:04:58   headphones that I use every day that [TS]

01:04:59   I've talked about ad nauseam on the show [TS]

01:05:01   I mean not to say I don't appreciate a [TS]

01:05:03   good set of headphones and not to say [TS]

01:05:04   i'm sure I that I wouldn't appreciate a [TS]

01:05:08   perfectly 24 frames per second movie as [TS]

01:05:12   shown on a TV that's very very nice like [TS]

01:05:14   yours is but this stuff just doesn't [TS]

01:05:17   bother me and on man i'm so thankful for [TS]

01:05:19   that [TS]

01:05:19   do you notice the soap opera fact I [TS]

01:05:21   don't even know what that is I've heard [TS]

01:05:22   of it but don't even know what it is [TS]

01:05:23   just don't even don't even learn about [TS]

01:05:24   it i don't know i don't want all I don't [TS]

01:05:26   want to think I think everybody can [TS]

01:05:28   notice that once they are once they [TS]

01:05:30   become aware because i feel like that is [TS]

01:05:32   the problem it it's like it's like the [TS]

01:05:33   fedex arrow like everyone right here but [TS]

01:05:35   before you have seen it at your mind [TS]

01:05:37   isn't ruined exactly or you don't are [TS]

01:05:39   you don't know what it is that you're [TS]

01:05:40   seeing like then you let something like [TS]

01:05:42   that about it but it looks a little bit [TS]

01:05:44   i mean even for me the first time I saw [TS]

01:05:46   it when I got my first television [TS]

01:05:47   supported that feature [TS]

01:05:49   I mean look what the hell online and [TS]

01:05:51   then I remember like half a second all [TS]

01:05:53   it must come like that out-of-the-box [TS]

01:05:54   and add you know but if I hadn't read [TS]

01:05:55   about it before and I would have thought [TS]

01:05:57   the TV is weird maybe and people just [TS]

01:06:00   get used to it [TS]

01:06:01   Casey I feel like making you go over [TS]

01:06:02   your television right now and adjusting [TS]

01:06:04   it to make sure that it is showing [TS]

01:06:06   showing the full 1080 picture instead of [TS]

01:06:08   cop shopping on the side so it's not so [TS]

01:06:10   it's not in a drive-through preserved [TS]

01:06:12   because occasionally on the appletv I [TS]

01:06:13   can tell where it's getting clipped and [TS]

01:06:15   I keep telling the TV no show me [TS]

01:06:17   everything pixel for pixel and then it [TS]

01:06:19   keeps forgetting every time I turn it [TS]

01:06:20   off that all that keeps forgetting that [TS]

01:06:23   Casey this is this is that you finally [TS]

01:06:25   found a way to get John to drive to your [TS]

01:06:26   house [TS]

01:06:27   that's true yeah so you tell me John how [TS]

01:06:29   to get my think it's a toshiba TV TV to [TS]

01:06:33   remember that I want full frame and [TS]

01:06:35   chop off the understand why wouldn't [TS]

01:06:38   well the only trick I know that if it's [TS]

01:06:39   not remembering can you name your input [TS]

01:06:41   pc you can rename your inputs it yes and [TS]

01:06:44   it is named pc and maybe have like a [TS]

01:06:47   bomb battery somewhere in there are not [TS]

01:06:49   keeping that like hasn't forget what's [TS]

01:06:52   the point of that feature who's gonna [TS]

01:06:53   change it every time you turn on the [TS]

01:06:54   television and also to be clear what i'm [TS]

01:06:56   doing is i'm hitting I think it's pick [TS]

01:06:57   size for picture size on the remote and [TS]

01:07:00   it will let me adjust we will let me [TS]

01:07:03   adjust you know through several [TS]

01:07:04   different options i don't remember what [TS]

01:07:06   they are right now but one of them is [TS]

01:07:08   like full res or dartford I forget [TS]

01:07:11   exactly what it's called but it will let [TS]

01:07:13   me adjust to that however every time I [TS]

01:07:15   turn the TV off and then turn the tv [TS]

01:07:17   back on it goes back to whatever the [TS]

01:07:20   default mode is no you got a google for [TS]

01:07:22   like your television model manual.pdf [TS]

01:07:24   for like there's always some like it you [TS]

01:07:26   know servicemen hidden service menu [TS]

01:07:28   where you're typing some numeric code [TS]

01:07:29   and some crazy menu comes up on the [TS]

01:07:31   screen there may be a way to do it and [TS]

01:07:32   if you can't you just get rid of the [TS]

01:07:33   television because honestly that's [TS]

01:07:34   that's obscene or or you just live with [TS]

01:07:39   it or just resign yourself to a missing [TS]

01:07:42   a bunch of the picture and be having the [TS]

01:07:44   rest of the pictures stretched out [TS]

01:07:46   yep it's gross and to the soap opera [TS]

01:07:48   fact if you have any satellite [TS]

01:07:50   television I don't know what I'm gonna [TS]

01:07:52   tell you now Allah says listen if you [TS]

01:07:54   don't notice you know it's like i [TS]

01:07:56   finally much this week is pastor Pastor [TS]

01:07:59   Dan huh / ATP and use code ATP terms [TS]

01:08:02   conditions to apply to get fifty dollars [TS]

01:08:04   towards any mattress purchase Casper's [TS]

01:08:06   online retailer premium mattresses for a [TS]

01:08:08   fraction of the price the medical [TS]

01:08:10   industry is inherently force customers [TS]

01:08:11   into paying notoriously hi markups [TS]

01:08:13   Casper is revolutionising it by cutting [TS]

01:08:15   the cost of doing the resellers and [TS]

01:08:17   showrooms and passionate savings [TS]

01:08:18   directly onto the consumer Catherine [TS]

01:08:21   mattresses provide resilience and [TS]

01:08:23   long-lasting supportive comfort with a [TS]

01:08:25   one-of-a-kind hybrid mattress that [TS]

01:08:27   combines premium latex foam with memory [TS]

01:08:29   foam it's obsessively enter your [TS]

01:08:31   mattress at a shockingly fair price [TS]

01:08:34   now the complete latex memory foam come [TS]

01:08:36   together for better nights and brighter [TS]

01:08:38   days with just the right sink and just [TS]

01:08:41   the right bounce now it sounds crazy to [TS]

01:08:43   buy a mattress from the internet we all [TS]

01:08:45   know that now of course lying one lying [TS]

01:08:48   on the store for two [TS]

01:08:49   seconds and then deciding i'm going to [TS]

01:08:50   sleep on this 48 hours a night for the [TS]

01:08:52   rest in the next 10 years that is pretty [TS]

01:08:54   crazy to castro recognize is really the [TS]

01:08:57   best way to try to mattress is to [TS]

01:08:58   actually sleep on it for a while in your [TS]

01:09:01   house like for real and so what they [TS]

01:09:03   have they have really easy shipping they [TS]

01:09:06   shipped to you in a in a really compact [TS]

01:09:08   box that kind of like the kind of vacuum [TS]

01:09:10   pack it in there and then expands once [TS]

01:09:12   you open up so shipping it to you is on [TS]

01:09:14   a problem getting it into your house [TS]

01:09:15   getting up stairwells not a problem if [TS]

01:09:18   you look in a big walk-up apartment and [TS]

01:09:20   you have some weird starting to get [TS]

01:09:21   around the castle will probably work for [TS]

01:09:23   you or other mattresses might not so [TS]

01:09:25   it's no problem to get to you and then [TS]

01:09:27   you get to try it out for a hundred [TS]

01:09:29   Knights risk-free so you buy from them [TS]

01:09:33   and you just sleep on it for up to a [TS]

01:09:35   hundred knights and if you don't like it [TS]

01:09:37   after that you can return it for free [TS]

01:09:40   they will arrange for you don't even [TS]

01:09:41   have to worry about how the heck do I [TS]

01:09:43   ship this mattress back to them they [TS]

01:09:45   arranged for a ranger pickup for you and [TS]

01:09:48   it's all risk free for a hundred Knights [TS]

01:09:51   so you can try out a mattress for three [TS]

01:09:53   months and it and then decide whether [TS]

01:09:56   it's worth for you which is better than [TS]

01:09:57   anything you could ever get by going to [TS]

01:09:59   a mattress store check it out to these [TS]

01:10:01   matches are made in America once again [TS]

01:10:03   combination of latex from and memory [TS]

01:10:05   foam for just the right sink just the [TS]

01:10:08   right balance and the best thing about [TS]

01:10:09   this [TS]

01:10:10   the value is incredible only five [TS]

01:10:12   hundred dollars for a twin size mattress [TS]

01:10:14   going up to only 954 a king and all the [TS]

01:10:18   sizes in between of course you try to [TS]

01:10:20   find a good king mattress for 950 that's [TS]

01:10:24   incredible [TS]

01:10:25   usually you're paying at least double [TS]

01:10:26   that for a mattress of this quality so [TS]

01:10:29   check out today get fifty dollars [TS]

01:10:30   towards a mattress purchase by visiting [TS]

01:10:32   Casper calm / ATP and using code ATP [TS]

01:10:35   terms and conditions apply [TS]

01:10:37   thank you very much to cast for [TS]

01:10:39   sponsoring our show once again [TS]

01:10:41   also check out their pillows very nice [TS]

01:10:43   yep Casey I don't know if they're any [TS]

01:10:47   setting so I i love how like so what a [TS]

01:10:50   long time ago and I think like two [TS]

01:10:52   thousand three ish I i had one of the [TS]

01:10:55   very first DVD burners and I stupidly [TS]

01:10:57   picked the wrong side of a format war [TS]

01:10:59   and I got DVD + are instead of DVD dash [TS]

01:11:01   are but to be before they [TS]

01:11:03   universal doesn't matter anyway at the [TS]

01:11:05   time the the dvds only held single layer [TS]

01:11:09   so they were only 4.7 gigs and most [TS]

01:11:11   movie dvds the time for dual layer 8.5 [TS]

01:11:14   gigs so I had to at that time in order [TS]

01:11:17   to pirate movies which is the only [TS]

01:11:18   reason you would need a DVD burner in [TS]

01:11:20   2002 2003 I wanted actually to backup my [TS]

01:11:24   movies i had to transcode and had to [TS]

01:11:28   basically break apart the TV structure [TS]

01:11:30   transferred the video to fit on the [TS]

01:11:32   single layer discs from the commercial [TS]

01:11:35   double layer discs and I and that that's [TS]

01:11:37   that's the time in my life when I really [TS]

01:11:39   discovered just how incredibly messy and [TS]

01:11:42   complicated video is and you know things [TS]

01:11:45   like all these different frame rates [TS]

01:11:47   whether it was interlaced interlacing is [TS]

01:11:49   the worst thing in the universe you know [TS]

01:11:52   and and then you have all the you know [TS]

01:11:53   if the aspect ratio was wrong and then [TS]

01:11:56   you have audio sync issues possibly and [TS]

01:11:59   and the tools in there was no handbrake [TS]

01:12:00   at the time the tools were like you know [TS]

01:12:02   six different tools you this one with d [TS]

01:12:05   marks the file this one remix the file [TS]

01:12:06   somewhere transcoding you know you had [TS]

01:12:08   to it was a huge mess and I remember [TS]

01:12:11   thinking if in just a few years video [TS]

01:12:15   will be simple that was 13 years ago and [TS]

01:12:19   it sounds like video still isn't simple [TS]

01:12:22   it just the complications now are a [TS]

01:12:25   little bit different like that you still [TS]

01:12:26   have some of the same ones we solve some [TS]

01:12:28   of the old ones we introduce new ones as [TS]

01:12:30   time went on it and a java software [TS]

01:12:33   updates [TS]

01:12:34   I mean just this whole world it just [TS]

01:12:36   seems like it is so unnecessarily [TS]

01:12:39   complex but you just never get [TS]

01:12:40   simplified we're on the right track with [TS]

01:12:43   like digital downloads and everything I [TS]

01:12:45   it's just that like that is like the [TS]

01:12:47   last mile the last mile equivalent as is [TS]

01:12:50   alright so we we all agree on a set of [TS]

01:12:52   formats that are reasonable interlacing [TS]

01:12:53   is gone audio sync shouldn't be an issue [TS]

01:12:55   anymore because you get like the package [TS]

01:12:57   of files you have ways to distribute [TS]

01:12:58   reasonably sized digital files look [TS]

01:13:01   really good that multi-channel audio [TS]

01:13:02   even the pirating formats are all pretty [TS]

01:13:05   nice now like it since this lot there's [TS]

01:13:08   a lot of uniformity I mean [TS]

01:13:09   you know the magic of em KB and a lot of [TS]

01:13:11   stuff right but it's the last miles like [TS]

01:13:14   okay how do I take these digital bits [TS]

01:13:15   which are nice and uniform and I can [TS]

01:13:17   play almost anywhere [TS]

01:13:19   how do I show them on my television and [TS]

01:13:21   listen to them through my television [TS]

01:13:23   speakers or whatever speakers i have [TS]

01:13:24   heard on television in a way that [TS]

01:13:26   doesn't suddenly change or some would [TS]

01:13:29   say ruin the the content because the [TS]

01:13:32   video file has a certain frame right and [TS]

01:13:34   if you don't show it at some multiple of [TS]

01:13:35   that frame rate it's gonna look weird [TS]

01:13:37   and if you have multi-channel audio and [TS]

01:13:41   you down makes it all the stereo it's [TS]

01:13:43   going to be weird or if you just drop [TS]

01:13:45   the back channels and this is a piece of [TS]

01:13:47   dialogue or sound effect that only [TS]

01:13:48   happens in the back channels it's going [TS]

01:13:50   to be weird and that's before you even [TS]

01:13:52   get into how many times is compressed [TS]

01:13:53   and how many times it recompress tree [TS]

01:13:55   compressing a double-sided double layer [TS]

01:13:56   DVD down the single-layer that's gross [TS]

01:13:58   because then take two with gross to [TS]

01:14:00   begin with and now you're just making it [TS]

01:14:01   worse [TS]

01:14:01   I would never bother with that it was [TS]

01:14:03   2003 now yeah that's not good tho you [TS]

01:14:07   gotta play the pure and take two is [TS]

01:14:09   that's as good as it's gonna get [TS]

01:14:11   yeah but back then like you were lucky [TS]

01:14:12   if you had like a 10 gig hard drive [TS]

01:14:15   yeah well i have a guess but then we [TS]

01:14:16   have like 60 but still like that was [TS]

01:14:18   still not a lot when you have eight gig [TS]

01:14:20   dvds and you have a 60 gig hard drive [TS]

01:14:23   yeah and the final part of the final [TS]

01:14:25   model was just telling Casey which is [TS]

01:14:27   televisions up for a variety of good and [TS]

01:14:30   bad reasons try to do stuff with the [TS]

01:14:32   picture to make it look quote-unquote [TS]

01:14:34   better or more correct or whatever and a [TS]

01:14:37   lot of the things they do to the picture [TS]

01:14:39   make it look crazy like for example the [TS]

01:14:41   high refresh rate lcds that had the [TS]

01:14:43   refresh it 240 hearts decide you know [TS]

01:14:46   what we're eating at 240 hertz i'm [TS]

01:14:49   showing at 24 frames per second movie [TS]

01:14:51   what the hell's the point me showing [TS]

01:14:52   frame number 110 times can we do [TS]

01:14:54   something clever and basically instead [TS]

01:14:56   of showing frame number 110 times and [TS]

01:14:58   frame number 2 10 times we know what [TS]

01:15:00   frame number one frame number two are [TS]

01:15:01   going to be like can we show 20 pictures [TS]

01:15:03   were frame number one slowly morphs into [TS]

01:15:06   frame number two [TS]

01:15:07   alright thanks for three sponsors this [TS]

01:15:09   trend everyone's gonna continue to the [TS]

01:15:14   ad shows your choice [TS]

01:15:16   audible.com igloo and castor and we will [TS]

01:15:18   see you next week [TS]

01:15:20   now the show is over they didn't even [TS]

01:15:25   mean to begin as it was accidental [TS]

01:15:30   it was accidental John racer Marco in kc [TS]

01:15:36   wouldn't let him [TS]

01:15:38   because it was accidental was accidental [TS]

01:15:42   and you can find the show know today p [TS]

01:15:46   dot and if your twitter follow them [TS]

01:15:53   yes eyl ISS so that's Casey list and a [TS]

01:15:59   co-pay rm20 Marco Arment and our AC [TS]

01:16:06   syracuse it [TS]

01:16:20   so anyway that that effect where it [TS]

01:16:25   takes it takes ten frame number 110 [TS]

01:16:28   frame over to and tries to make 20 [TS]

01:16:30   frames each of which starts at one end [TS]

01:16:32   it too but each one has a little thing [TS]

01:16:33   between that's like called by million [TS]

01:16:36   their names are a million different [TS]

01:16:37   manufacturers motion smoothing picture [TS]

01:16:39   interpolation magic shadow I i totally [TS]

01:16:43   blanked what it try that one more time [TS]

01:16:45   because i don't think i understand [TS]

01:16:46   alright so you're you got I couldn't [TS]

01:16:51   resist the case you just hang up the [TS]

01:16:56   call and hang up everything so yes well [TS]

01:17:01   I initiated today didn't I [TS]

01:17:04   I couldn't tell what like walking up on [TS]

01:17:07   where is high-quality he hung up he [TS]

01:17:09   would have gone away but then why is [TS]

01:17:10   Margo gone too [TS]

01:17:12   yes sorry i forgot that i kicked off the [TS]

01:17:14   call today that's that's even more and [TS]

01:17:16   less communicative this new chick that [TS]

01:17:19   you have hanging up on podcasts need to [TS]

01:17:20   stick to sit sit down Casey we never [TS]

01:17:24   talk to you about hanging up on podcasts [TS]

01:17:25   you can do it once it might be fun but [TS]

01:17:28   if it becomes a thing now we have an [TS]

01:17:30   issue and now we have talked about how [TS]

01:17:32   you're hanging up on but now we need an [TS]

01:17:34   intervention is is affecting other [TS]

01:17:36   people mostly made good anyway I hope [TS]

01:17:42   you do understand the motion something [TS]

01:17:44   thing and here's the thing about it if [TS]

01:17:46   you don't notice it turn it off on your [TS]

01:17:48   television ever think about to get [TS]

01:17:49   across cases television probably just [TS]

01:17:50   turn it back on exactly go ahead and [TS]

01:17:52   back up but if you turn if you don't [TS]

01:17:55   notice when it's on you also notice when [TS]

01:17:57   it's off and it will make everyone feel [TS]

01:17:59   better [TS]

01:17:59   so just turn it off I think if you watch [TS]

01:18:02   television with it off for a long time [TS]

01:18:03   and then you turn it back on you will [TS]

01:18:05   notice you'll be like what the hell is [TS]

01:18:07   this it will look different and weird [TS]

01:18:09   you even things like sports will look [TS]

01:18:10   different and weird if you're telling [TS]

01:18:12   any features about like super brightness [TS]

01:18:15   enhancer magical sparkly make better [TS]

01:18:18   just turn all of those off you don't [TS]

01:18:20   know what they are turned off not low [TS]

01:18:22   not medium like how much noise reduction [TS]

01:18:23   do I want off off off off and then you [TS]

01:18:27   turn everything off and if you don't [TS]

01:18:29   like how your television look with [TS]

01:18:30   everything off you probably have crappy [TS]

01:18:31   TV may be considered [TS]

01:18:33   turning one or two things back on to [TS]

01:18:35   make your your crappy TV look better but [TS]

01:18:37   realistically if you have a reasonable [TS]

01:18:39   television turn all that stuff i will [TS]

01:18:42   put a link in the show notes to my fill [TS]

01:18:44   your TV article which was just the most [TS]

01:18:46   basic plea to get people to show the [TS]

01:18:48   full HD picture on the television [TS]

01:18:49   because i don't think it's unreasonable [TS]

01:18:50   like is that is that crazy that you know [TS]

01:18:53   they send a 1080 picture you decide you [TS]

01:18:55   know what I don't need to see that the [TS]

01:18:56   inch around the whole make it stretch it [TS]

01:18:58   out so I don't see that part of the [TS]

01:18:59   screen [TS]

01:19:01   don't do that that is the easiest [TS]

01:19:02   setting that every intelligent [TS]

01:19:03   everything else is much more complicated [TS]

01:19:05   you can calibrate your television get [TS]

01:19:06   the calibration apps all blah blah so i [TS]

01:19:10   would just say start by having your [TS]

01:19:12   picture for television i'm glad the case [TS]

01:19:13   he figured out how to do in this [TS]

01:19:14   television I'm sad that his television [TS]

01:19:16   apparently is not listening to him when [TS]

01:19:18   he doesn't well that may or may not be [TS]

01:19:19   true it very well could be user error [TS]

01:19:21   and there might be some not even like a [TS]

01:19:24   girly man hater something instead of [TS]

01:19:25   doing it on the flow short in that and i [TS]

01:19:27   have looked but I have I've only spent a [TS]

01:19:30   moment looking at it and it very well [TS]

01:19:32   could be that i didn't just either not [TS]

01:19:34   realizing what the setting is called or [TS]

01:19:36   not looking in the right place like I [TS]

01:19:37   feel like I'm a reasonably bright guy [TS]

01:19:39   but I wouldn't completely put it past me [TS]

01:19:41   that you got it is always like 141 or [TS]

01:19:43   dot dot for daughter like you you said [TS]

01:19:45   all the things like the various names [TS]

01:19:47   they call them it's not always [TS]

01:19:48   straightforward i think i mentioned in [TS]

01:19:50   the article about like sometimes called [TS]

01:19:51   size one myself it's called size one [TS]

01:19:53   size too which makes no freakin sense [TS]

01:19:55   which 10 and i would never remember [TS]

01:19:56   which one is which but I just never [TS]

01:19:58   change in my television remember so I [TS]

01:20:00   don't worry about that although actually [TS]

01:20:01   that's not true i changed it recently [TS]

01:20:02   because the stupid wii UI complain about [TS]

01:20:05   that before in we mowed when you play [TS]

01:20:07   wii games on the wii u busily you will [TS]

01:20:09   play all three games wii games for [TS]

01:20:11   standard def right so when the wii u [TS]

01:20:13   plays them it outputs into the title [TS]

01:20:16   safe area like it outputs the shrunken [TS]

01:20:18   image on your HD screen so if you have [TS]

01:20:20   your television calibrated correctly you [TS]

01:20:21   play weekend is a black border around [TS]

01:20:23   the entire week game and the only way to [TS]

01:20:26   fix it because nintendo is stupid is to [TS]

01:20:28   change the size of your television say [TS]

01:20:30   alright while you're playing this game [TS]

01:20:31   go into the stupid over scan mode where [TS]

01:20:33   you stretch everything just so you'll [TS]

01:20:35   get the image to fill the screen and not [TS]

01:20:36   have weird burning around the edges or [TS]

01:20:38   whatever so I have changed that a couple [TS]

01:20:40   times for my kids to play wii games but [TS]

01:20:42   in general I leave it on the correct [TS]

01:20:44   mode as everybody should because why [TS]

01:20:46   would you know you're paying for the [TS]

01:20:47   whole picture [TS]

01:20:48   why not see it all now it does drive me [TS]

01:20:50   nuts on the appletv I forget [TS]

01:20:52   specifically what it is but there's [TS]

01:20:53   something like a menu or maybe it's the [TS]

01:20:55   music app something that that is clearly [TS]

01:20:59   cut off on the bottom and it drives me [TS]

01:21:00   preserved but not enough that I've spent [TS]

01:21:03   the time [TS]

01:21:03   spelunking through the you the owners [TS]

01:21:05   manual in the menu system and all that [TS]

01:21:08   trying to find the right switch to flip [TS]

01:21:10   now i'm waiting for Declan to destroy [TS]

01:21:12   your television accidentally thanks and [TS]

01:21:15   smear some peanut butter into something [TS]

01:21:17   very important part of it is gonna have [TS]

01:21:19   to get a lot taller because it's [TS]

01:21:20   something boy you know you would hate my [TS]

01:21:22   TV has come to think of it because it's [TS]

01:21:24   above our fireplace on the wall the [TS]

01:21:26   wrong place for you know I know it's way [TS]

01:21:27   higher than it should be but I'm but [TS]

01:21:31   there's no other good spot for it i see [TS]

01:21:32   that it never seemed like a house [TS]

01:21:34   magazine you know like interior [TS]

01:21:35   decorating magazine or some sort of [TS]

01:21:37   homebrew amazing every single freaking [TS]

01:21:39   house they show as television all the [TS]

01:21:40   fireplace and I'm like who are these [TS]

01:21:42   people what they want you know the house [TS]

01:21:44   magazine they also have like white [TS]

01:21:46   couches and like yeah I'm Casey is why [TS]

01:21:49   don't you have a white couch do you know [TS]

01:21:51   Brown yeah like even even Casey who gets [TS]

01:21:53   white everything you wouldn't get a [TS]

01:21:55   white cabbage with you whenever I catch [TS]

01:21:56   for long now the deklan's on the move [TS]

01:21:59   yeah so just life exists like nobody can [TS]

01:22:02   have a white couch for more than like 10 [TS]

01:22:03   minutes before it's not white anymore [TS]

01:22:04   but if you look at all those magazines [TS]

01:22:07   all their furniture is all white because [TS]

01:22:08   it doesn't need to be functional just [TS]

01:22:10   needs to look at a picture New England [TS]

01:22:12   you see a lot of it because in doing the [TS]

01:22:14   houses were made before televisions [TS]

01:22:16   existed so there's no place to put a [TS]

01:22:17   television this is just busy the windows [TS]

01:22:19   on the wall like there's no place to put [TS]

01:22:20   a television where you can have a couch [TS]

01:22:22   on your television here and count on the [TS]

01:22:24   opposite side so the only place to do it [TS]

01:22:25   is like a lot of the rooms are arranged [TS]

01:22:27   so you can have a couch facing your [TS]

01:22:28   fireplace because that's what the [TS]

01:22:30   gathered around before they had [TS]

01:22:31   television right and so the only place [TS]

01:22:34   you have for your flat TV like that's [TS]

01:22:36   why people excited by flat-panel dollars [TS]

01:22:38   now we can finally hold hangover [TS]

01:22:39   fireplace but then I know [TS]

01:22:41   doesn't your neck hurt from like looking [TS]

01:22:42   up towards the ceiling all the time it's [TS]

01:22:44   the wrong place for TV so it's [TS]

01:22:46   unequivocally the wrong place for TV [TS]

01:22:47   with problem is we have if you're [TS]

01:22:49   sitting on the couch the way we have the [TS]

01:22:51   room arranged it's a very very wide but [TS]

01:22:54   very short room that makes [TS]

01:22:55   hands and so the couch is facing the [TS]

01:22:57   fireplace just like you said and above [TS]

01:22:59   the fireplace is the TV because that's [TS]

01:23:01   really the only decent place for it in [TS]

01:23:03   the room I mean marco spend their [TS]

01:23:04   handful of times it's the in terms of [TS]

01:23:07   the room that's the best place for the [TS]

01:23:08   TV and to me the room is the priority [TS]

01:23:12   not the TV and so we've put in what is [TS]

01:23:15   unequivocally in arguably the wrong [TS]

01:23:17   place because I'd rather the room look [TS]

01:23:19   good for well be reasonably arranged [TS]

01:23:22   over the TV in the most perfect viewing [TS]

01:23:24   position for you and tips to get [TS]

01:23:26   together with your little society if we [TS]

01:23:27   don't care where the television is or [TS]

01:23:29   what yeah you're Marcus television is [TS]

01:23:30   too high and the Historical Society [TS]

01:23:32   demands that you have sound bar and [TS]

01:23:34   those are two kinds of things that are [TS]

01:23:36   absolutely in an opposition to my value [TS]

01:23:40   system that like I don't care about [TS]

01:23:41   anything in the room except the TV and i [TS]

01:23:44   even i don't have a good place for my I [TS]

01:23:46   don't have a good place for my TV either [TS]

01:23:47   like i have the same problem i have a [TS]

01:23:49   you know I New England house it's [TS]

01:23:50   centered around the fireplace i have [TS]

01:23:52   almost no place to my TV [TS]

01:23:54   almost i just found one place to wedge [TS]

01:23:56   it and did the best I can but at the [TS]

01:23:57   very least sister at the right height [TS]

01:23:59   well the funny thing is my house was [TS]

01:24:00   built like 98 or something like that so [TS]

01:24:02   I don't know why the the family room was [TS]

01:24:05   tradition like against a certain style [TS]

01:24:07   of home and a certain style homes made [TS]

01:24:09   the way now rich people homes and modern [TS]

01:24:11   homes always have a room like you know a [TS]

01:24:13   home theater room or like a room for [TS]

01:24:15   like the room is that is absolutely [TS]

01:24:16   hundred percent designed to say this [TS]

01:24:18   entire wall is for you to put all your [TS]

01:24:20   expensive AV equipment and directly [TS]

01:24:22   opposite that entire wall is seating for [TS]

01:24:24   a bunch of people who are facing it [TS]

01:24:25   exactly like there's thing and you're [TS]

01:24:27   facing it and there's always like one [TS]

01:24:29   perfect seat exactly in the middle of [TS]

01:24:30   the room exactly in the middle of the [TS]

01:24:31   surround speakers for you're looking at [TS]

01:24:33   the screen head on that exactly the [TS]

01:24:34   right height every rich person house at [TS]

01:24:37   it but unless you're doing new [TS]

01:24:38   construction and we are buying a house [TS]

01:24:40   from a rich person you don't have that [TS]

01:24:41   you just have a house that's made in a [TS]

01:24:43   handful of styles most of which all the [TS]

01:24:47   styles that were invented before [TS]

01:24:48   televisions were around flat-panel [TS]

01:24:49   otherwise and so they just don't have a [TS]

01:24:51   place for TV and I'm just impressed that [TS]

01:24:54   like that at the resolve of people like [TS]

01:24:57   Casey who can pull wall-mounted TV [TS]

01:24:59   because like I like we've been we've [TS]

01:25:02   lived in this house now for about five [TS]

01:25:05   or six years the TV has been in the same [TS]

01:25:08   spot the entire [TS]

01:25:09   fire time I cannot think of a different [TS]

01:25:12   place that we would put a TV than where [TS]

01:25:14   the TV is yeah you've got challenges to [TS]

01:25:16   and you remove it's a big open room [TS]

01:25:17   right but still like we've never played [TS]

01:25:20   the TV anywhere else would ever want to [TS]

01:25:21   be anywhere else we put the TV there [TS]

01:25:23   that day we moved in and we've never [TS]

01:25:24   moved it because it works great and I [TS]

01:25:26   still I still wouldn't wall mount it [TS]

01:25:29   because to me that feeling such a big [TS]

01:25:30   commitment and it makes everything so [TS]

01:25:32   much less flexible like I still would [TS]

01:25:35   not want mount it [TS]

01:25:36   no local Walmart's have like a swingarm [TS]

01:25:37   where you can like facing in different [TS]

01:25:39   directions and someone is not a big deal [TS]

01:25:41   some of the elders especially with my [TS]

01:25:42   you don't realize because you have an [TS]

01:25:43   older television but modern televisions [TS]

01:25:45   are so thin and light that it's [TS]

01:25:46   basically like a big monitor on an arm [TS]

01:25:48   it's actually pretty cool and it's just [TS]

01:25:49   a couple of bolts into the walls not [TS]

01:25:51   that big of a deal em now that I'm [TS]

01:25:54   saying you should do I think your TV is [TS]

01:25:55   fine where it is but you have the same [TS]

01:25:56   problem where else could you put your [TS]

01:25:57   television [TS]

01:25:58   I can't you like unless you decide to [TS]

01:26:00   make an artificial wall out of your [TS]

01:26:01   television which I have to admit it's [TS]

01:26:02   probably something i would consider in [TS]

01:26:03   your house obviously not a tip that any [TS]

01:26:07   say in it but because that's the real [TS]

01:26:09   dream here's the real dream of people [TS]

01:26:11   who are i would love to have you come [TS]

01:26:12   over and suggestive have my people have [TS]

01:26:15   TV of such as what you want obviously [TS]

01:26:17   you want like a dedicated remember i'm [TS]

01:26:18   not that big about like a dedicated home [TS]

01:26:20   theater room like down the basement [TS]

01:26:21   because I feel like you're always going [TS]

01:26:22   to use like whatever the upstairs room [TS]

01:26:24   is near the kitchen so I would make that [TS]

01:26:25   my television room and you know the [TS]

01:26:27   television is there and facing me and [TS]

01:26:29   the speakers are all arranged in the [TS]

01:26:31   right way then all that other stuff but [TS]

01:26:33   here's the here's the the important part [TS]

01:26:34   the whole wall that has a television and [TS]

01:26:37   the speakers in it or in front of it or [TS]

01:26:38   whatever [TS]

01:26:39   there has to be a room behind that wall [TS]

01:26:41   that can't be like the at the end [TS]

01:26:44   because getting to the crap behind all [TS]

01:26:45   your AV equipment is a nightmare so all [TS]

01:26:47   the fancy rich people houses have [TS]

01:26:49   essentially all your AV equipment and [TS]

01:26:52   then you can walk behind it either [TS]

01:26:53   because the rest of the house continues [TS]

01:26:55   behind it or because it's just like a a [TS]

01:26:56   crawl space or alcover cubby for both [TS]

01:26:58   ventilation and because it is that is [TS]

01:27:00   the ultimate luxury being able to walk [TS]

01:27:02   behind your AV equipment see all the [TS]

01:27:04   wires have them all arranged like you're [TS]

01:27:06   in a data center like they're all [TS]

01:27:07   perfectly rounded like using cables [TS]

01:27:08   going RAC sit and just that is just [TS]

01:27:10   amazing for me I can't get my stuff [TS]

01:27:13   without like contorting my body like a [TS]

01:27:15   you know the yoga master getting behind [TS]

01:27:18   there and bending down having a little [TS]

01:27:19   flashlight and trying to it's just [TS]

01:27:20   impossible because who has enough room [TS]

01:27:22   do you have a room behind their [TS]

01:27:24   television stuff the only purpose of [TS]

01:27:26   which is to get in the back of all your [TS]

01:27:28   television stuff [TS]

01:27:29   rich people that's what the entire rest [TS]

01:27:30   of the country that's you know everyone [TS]

01:27:33   else except people who live on the coast [TS]

01:27:34   now they have big hit big giant houses [TS]

01:27:36   and mansions but unless you have a [TS]

01:27:37   dedicated own theater room they even [TS]

01:27:40   people who wall mounts like well you [TS]

01:27:41   know one shot at this and hdmi cables [TS]

01:27:43   going down through the walls going to [TS]

01:27:44   poke out over here and this is where you [TS]

01:27:45   need to put your stuff and if you ever [TS]

01:27:46   need to mess around behind there [TS]

01:27:47   you're basically gonna have to unplug it [TS]

01:27:49   because or slide your whole thing out [TS]

01:27:50   there has to be a wheels like it's it's [TS]

01:27:53   a big pain so I you know I've only ever [TS]

01:27:56   seen people have dedicated rooms to also [TS]

01:27:58   be able to have a room behind the room [TS]

01:28:00   to get your AV stuff and that that is [TS]

01:28:02   that's where it's at your next house job [TS]

01:28:05   yeah right now my never house [TS]
