00:00:00   the incomparable podcast episode 30 [TS]

00:00:07   November 2010 [TS]

00:00:10   we are back on the incomparable podcast [TS]

00:00:13   easy for me to say i am jason Snell and [TS]

00:00:16   joining me today in the podcast echo [TS]

00:00:19   chamber are three of our regular [TS]

00:00:22   contributors to my left I don't even [TS]

00:00:25   know what that means is Glenn [TS]

00:00:26   fleischmann hello hello to my right is [TS]

00:00:30   Dan more'n I Jason and across the table [TS]

00:00:34   for me keeping a safe distance is [TS]

00:00:36   serenity Caldwell [TS]

00:00:38   hi Jason hello thanks for coming [TS]

00:00:40   everyone to this stuffed with turkey I [TS]

00:00:44   suppose we are now me happy thanksgiving [TS]

00:00:47   dinner delicious how's your state tasty [TS]

00:00:50   which is our clever media savvy way of [TS]

00:00:52   pointing out we're recording this before [TS]

00:00:53   thanksgiving anyway [TS]

00:00:55   cranberry sauce that's good stuff we are [TS]

00:00:58   talking today in the ne wake of the [TS]

00:01:01   release of the seventh harry potter [TS]

00:01:04   movie we are using that as an excuse to [TS]

00:01:07   talk about all things Harry Potter the [TS]

00:01:09   young the young wizard with the with the [TS]

00:01:12   Lightning shaped scar on his forehead i [TS]

00:01:15   should also point out that's the seventh [TS]

00:01:17   movie but it's not the last movie [TS]

00:01:18   because they decided to take the seventh [TS]

00:01:20   book and split into two parts and [TS]

00:01:22   there's a really technical reason why [TS]

00:01:24   they did that that you may not be [TS]

00:01:25   familiar with which is to make more [TS]

00:01:27   money I i heard a good somebody [TS]

00:01:29   commented the other day like boy I bet [TS]

00:01:31   Warner Brothers is smacking itself now [TS]

00:01:33   for not having you know decided to do [TS]

00:01:34   this with all of the books [TS]

00:01:36   oh yes except I gotta say the reviews [TS]

00:01:39   have not been as kind as they've been to [TS]

00:01:40   some of the other harry potter movies [TS]

00:01:42   and i think i'd be like everybody mix [TS]

00:01:44   things but I don't know that but then [TS]

00:01:46   why is there crying all the way to the [TS]

00:01:47   back it's so sad [TS]

00:01:49   well always understands on a break [TS]

00:01:51   box-office records [TS]

00:01:52   well I I somebody said that that they [TS]

00:01:55   thought in the end of that at least [TS]

00:01:58   artistically they should have done the [TS]

00:01:59   Lord of the Rings thing and just [TS]

00:02:00   released it as a three you know [TS]

00:02:02   three-and-a-half-hour movie but of [TS]

00:02:03   course they wouldn't make as much money [TS]

00:02:04   as by splitting into at this point [TS]

00:02:07   you're so invested I we were driving [TS]

00:02:08   past the movie theater here that's [TS]

00:02:10   showing it my wife said hey you know my [TS]

00:02:12   parents are here for the holiday lets we [TS]

00:02:14   can go see it and I said oh you know [TS]

00:02:17   it's sort of you know mixed reviews and [TS]

00:02:19   all that and she says what you're not [TS]

00:02:20   going to see it you've seen the first [TS]

00:02:21   six like I think this is [TS]

00:02:24   it is only one and you're going to see [TS]

00:02:25   the last one so how could you skip one [TS]

00:02:27   so you've got to go to the one where [TS]

00:02:28   they go camping [TS]

00:02:29   it's interesting it's interesting to [TS]

00:02:31   compare this floor of the Rings because [TS]

00:02:32   the you know the original movies a [TS]

00:02:34   computer Jackson kept trying to squeeze [TS]

00:02:37   into something that was actually [TS]

00:02:38   releasable in theaters now down to one [TS]

00:02:40   under three-and-a-half workers do [TS]

00:02:41   something for each part my camera with [TS]

00:02:43   the longest one was then the director's [TS]

00:02:45   cut came out you're like oh you know a [TS]

00:02:47   lot of subtle beautiful scenes were cut [TS]

00:02:49   in the theater and I think you watch I [TS]

00:02:51   spent at some point a couple years ago I [TS]

00:02:53   watched all of the director's cuts of [TS]

00:02:55   lord of the rings and what is it well [TS]

00:02:57   over 10 hours 11 hours and and we did [TS]

00:03:00   every every holiday season in december [TS]

00:03:02   we will go my wife and I will watch over [TS]

00:03:04   six consecutive nights we will watch [TS]

00:03:05   those each disc of the six disc set and [TS]

00:03:08   it's great it's much and you feel like [TS]

00:03:10   it's it's less of a choppy tail it's [TS]

00:03:12   more complete old and so there are some [TS]

00:03:14   arguments to say for a book as [TS]

00:03:16   unnecessarily long as harry potter 70 [TS]

00:03:18   interruptions I'm split into two parts [TS]

00:03:21   to tell the story well in the theaters [TS]

00:03:23   and then we'll add another hour for the [TS]

00:03:25   caps to the DVD this will be a seven [TS]

00:03:27   hour extravaganza goes to watch 7 when [TS]

00:03:30   it's out the directors that yeah so it [TS]

00:03:32   isn't it is a huge book and so they [TS]

00:03:35   decided to break it into two and and the [TS]

00:03:37   you know the the criticism i hear about [TS]

00:03:39   the movie before we backtrack and talk [TS]

00:03:40   about the books it is that uh you know [TS]

00:03:43   it's just it is a setup of of part two [TS]

00:03:46   but then again I thought that way about [TS]

00:03:47   the sixth movie to be honest the six [TS]

00:03:49   movie felt to me like episode 6 of an [TS]

00:03:53   eight-episode TV series or season not [TS]

00:03:57   like a self-contained movie I felt like [TS]

00:03:59   it was unlike many of the earlier movies [TS]

00:04:01   I felt like even with the sixth [TS]

00:04:03   installment we we are really you know [TS]

00:04:06   giving up on any pretense of this being [TS]

00:04:08   anything but an installment well i would [TS]

00:04:10   argue very much that both the six movie [TS]

00:04:13   and this this first part of the seventh [TS]

00:04:16   movie are much more character studies [TS]

00:04:18   than actual plots with beginning middle [TS]

00:04:21   and end it's just like all right you [TS]

00:04:22   know these characters now let's spend [TS]

00:04:23   some time learning more of their quirks [TS]

00:04:26   perhaps rather than you actually wanted [TS]

00:04:28   to know well I mean and that goes back [TS]

00:04:31   to it being feeling that TV feel of like [TS]

00:04:33   you know what you're really doing is [TS]

00:04:34   spending some time with characters which [TS]

00:04:37   is what T [TS]

00:04:37   he does better than movies in general is [TS]

00:04:39   that you get to spend a lot of time with [TS]

00:04:40   them and and this is a unique experience [TS]

00:04:43   where you've got over a fairly [TS]

00:04:45   compressed period of time eight movies [TS]

00:04:47   with the same characters you don't even [TS]

00:04:49   in traditional movie series like the [TS]

00:04:50   star trek for things like that it's it's [TS]

00:04:52   takes up way more time to go through it [TS]

00:04:54   and an email david because their kids [TS]

00:04:56   young actors they've had to compress it [TS]

00:04:59   right i mean Star Trek's you know one [TS]

00:05:01   through six went from like the late [TS]

00:05:03   seventies to through the early 90s for [TS]

00:05:06   six movies and so they've done i [TS]

00:05:09   remember when the first harry potter [TS]

00:05:10   came out and going to see it and it was [TS]

00:05:12   just wow how are they gonna you know do [TS]

00:05:15   this to keep pace and of course you know [TS]

00:05:17   pretty quickly the inevitable Oh [TS]

00:05:19   everybody starting to look way older [TS]

00:05:20   than their characters sort of comes into [TS]

00:05:23   play but I mean honestly I i know that [TS]

00:05:25   never bothered me that much coming [TS]

00:05:27   especially growing up having watched [TS]

00:05:28   chose were like clearly there were high [TS]

00:05:30   school you know age kids being played by [TS]

00:05:33   people who are in their thirties or [TS]

00:05:34   whatever so you know I've been willing [TS]

00:05:36   to let that slide I think that they did [TS]

00:05:38   a pretty good job of picking people who [TS]

00:05:41   really did you know [TS]

00:05:43   excellent work bringing those characters [TS]

00:05:45   to life and I think runs right that it [TS]

00:05:46   really is more I mean the interest of [TS]

00:05:48   harry potter in general i find to be the [TS]

00:05:50   characters unless you know I don't think [TS]

00:05:53   the plots or anything necessarily to [TS]

00:05:55   write home about it's kind of a [TS]

00:05:56   archetypal plot right growling it's you [TS]

00:06:00   know rally introduces like a thousand do [TS]

00:06:02   characters in every book too so it [TS]

00:06:04   that's part of the problem i think [TS]

00:06:06   making movies work is you really need to [TS]

00:06:08   pare down the number of characters on [TS]

00:06:09   screen and you know some movies better [TS]

00:06:12   than others and I think the you know [TS]

00:06:13   that the early movies the first to wear [TS]

00:06:15   what was that Chris Columbus director [TS]

00:06:17   the first two is that right yeah right [TS]

00:06:18   and those were much more like we've torn [TS]

00:06:21   pages out the book and paste them on the [TS]

00:06:23   movie screen they weren't bad and they [TS]

00:06:24   were well realized that everything was a [TS]

00:06:26   little first week and thin and let you [TS]

00:06:29   know that the first two movies the first [TS]

00:06:30   two books are also the shortest by far [TS]

00:06:32   its it's true but even so I think they [TS]

00:06:34   had a worse job in those at making the [TS]

00:06:36   actually you know summarizing or not [TS]

00:06:39   summarizing but you felt they were [TS]

00:06:41   summaries as opposed to re working into [TS]

00:06:44   a new medium of something it seem like [TS]

00:06:45   very much like if I was an author [TS]

00:06:47   instead of having someone rework my work [TS]

00:06:49   I just rather than take [TS]

00:06:51   pages from it and put it on the screen [TS]

00:06:52   and felt very much like that then when [TS]

00:06:54   you got into of course not forgetting [TS]

00:06:56   his name who directed the next Alfonso [TS]

00:06:59   Quran yeah and his films where they are [TS]

00:07:01   much more beautiful rich deep nuanced [TS]

00:07:04   and He shed and shed and shit i wonder [TS]

00:07:06   how much of a battle it was to let [TS]

00:07:08   things go and then you see back again in [TS]

00:07:11   six and seven part one that there's you [TS]

00:07:15   know this tendency to set and you know [TS]

00:07:17   let's let's talk about seven part one [TS]

00:07:19   that there are so many characters and so [TS]

00:07:22   many terrific actors who aren't screen [TS]

00:07:24   for like five seconds I'm take me like [TS]

00:07:27   there's David Thewlis week he's gone [TS]

00:07:29   oh there's no no no we know Blanco hope [TS]

00:07:32   she's got a line that's very funny and [TS]

00:07:34   now she's gone and I feel like there's [TS]

00:07:35   about 50 actors in harry potter second [TS]

00:07:39   part 1 that that are just fleeting on [TS]

00:07:42   screen because it seemed like they must [TS]

00:07:43   and even so they pare down [TS]

00:07:45   it seemed like they had to get them in [TS]

00:07:46   there so they stuck him in there partly [TS]

00:07:48   to have to pay off in part two and [TS]

00:07:50   partly because maybe the audience would [TS]

00:07:52   have felt cheated not have that glimpse [TS]

00:07:53   of the islands of form Wormtail or [TS]

00:07:56   something you gotta balance all [TS]

00:07:58   characters i think like pretty much all [TS]

00:08:00   of the characters besides our main crew [TS]

00:08:02   are all in the first 1 30 minutes so it [TS]

00:08:04   balances out with the two hours of [TS]

00:08:06   camping with that does every is always [TS]

00:08:11   an exegesis in these large you know epic [TS]

00:08:13   swear there's just camping I mean Lord [TS]

00:08:15   of the Rings book 56 it's like and [TS]

00:08:18   they're camping it's like this every [TS]

00:08:19   author have this urge to write about mud [TS]

00:08:22   and dirt and danken Swedes I don't know [TS]

00:08:25   I gotta say when I was watching a gun [TS]

00:08:28   and I are really only two people who [TS]

00:08:30   have seen the movie right now you [TS]

00:08:31   haven't seen it yet Dan have you seen it [TS]

00:08:33   yet you haven't seen yet Jason well now [TS]

00:08:35   that it's after thanksgiving are Tina [TS]

00:08:38   but it does it's not coming to me [TS]

00:08:41   yeah you'd seen it a hundred i CH in a [TS]

00:08:43   future timeline that thing that really [TS]

00:08:46   like cracked me up is that of course [TS]

00:08:47   Harry Ron and Hermione are all walking [TS]

00:08:50   around in modern-day clothing in these [TS]

00:08:52   big epic you know Lord of the Rings Ian [TS]

00:08:54   type shots and I'm I didn't really [TS]

00:08:56   realize that while reading the book and [TS]

00:08:58   now watching on-screen I'm like man this [TS]

00:09:00   looks really ridiculous or 230 skinny [TS]

00:09:03   other and skinny [TS]

00:09:04   jeans and sweaters standing on like the [TS]

00:09:07   cliffs of you know [TS]

00:09:08   yea though I liked when it i forget [TS]

00:09:10   which movie it was i think i might have [TS]

00:09:11   been off onto corals movies where they [TS]

00:09:13   put them they took them out of their [TS]

00:09:14   sort of Wizarding robes and put them in [TS]

00:09:16   modern you know track like tracksuits [TS]

00:09:18   and things like that and i thought i [TS]

00:09:19   thought that was a great decision [TS]

00:09:21   because it could have gotten really thuy [TS]

00:09:23   and really just wizardy and it it didn't [TS]

00:09:30   if I think it anchors it and that's one [TS]

00:09:31   of the things i always liked about the [TS]

00:09:33   later books as I felt like there was [TS]

00:09:34   more of a relationship with the [TS]

00:09:37   quote-unquote real world which set this [TS]

00:09:41   apart from something like Lord of the [TS]

00:09:43   Rings which you know is fine everything [TS]

00:09:45   but I I you know this is fundamentally [TS]

00:09:47   in the later ones is really a story [TS]

00:09:49   about you know parallel worlds if not [TS]

00:09:52   parallel universes city and the know [TS]

00:09:55   haha that's the hogwarts and the muggle [TS]

00:09:58   city and the other city [TS]

00:09:59   well I thought that was what was easily [TS]

00:10:01   dismissed to like the you know I thought [TS]

00:10:03   that I i thought one of the best jersey [TS]

00:10:04   scenes at all seven books is when the [TS]

00:10:07   dursleys take their leave of haryanvi [TS]

00:10:08   bookseven I thought we'd get a moment of [TS]

00:10:11   reflection there I thought they open it [TS]

00:10:13   slow step back have that great moment [TS]

00:10:15   with Dudley which is I think a beautiful [TS]

00:10:17   woman in the book so it stands out it [TS]

00:10:18   gives him briefly three-dimensionality [TS]

00:10:20   out of you know pretty much the entire [TS]

00:10:22   series which is a cartoon a bully and I [TS]

00:10:25   don't like that and then in the movie i [TS]

00:10:27   think for interest of narrative [TS]

00:10:28   continuity in parallel ism between [TS]

00:10:30   hermione and ron and harry they just [TS]

00:10:33   sort of glossed over it to get into the [TS]

00:10:35   story proper so there-there is that too [TS]

00:10:38   everything is very fast I mean [TS]

00:10:40   everything's always they they always [TS]

00:10:42   open the film's very fast when you look [TS]

00:10:44   at them sort of as a whole it's always [TS]

00:10:46   true up we gotta get him [TS]

00:10:47   we gotta get him out of the dursleys we [TS]

00:10:49   gotta get him out go-go-go and always [TS]

00:10:51   always rushing but I'm even in the first [TS]

00:10:53   half hours that stuff the first movie [TS]

00:10:55   spend a lot of time with addresses and I [TS]

00:10:58   actually think it's its side to try to [TS]

00:11:00   set up that kind of story but at the [TS]

00:11:01   same time it is kind of painful the [TS]

00:11:03   amount of time they do spend before [TS]

00:11:04   Hagrid you know Bruce into the room on [TS]

00:11:07   the top of the rock and says it's your [TS]

00:11:08   birthday it they do spend a lot of time [TS]

00:11:11   one of the fun things about the jerseys [TS]

00:11:13   I think their way [TS]

00:11:15   broader there even broader if this can [TS]

00:11:17   be possible in the movies than they are [TS]

00:11:18   in the books [TS]

00:11:19   that's true and but in the books one of [TS]

00:11:22   the things I love about the the dursleys [TS]

00:11:23   is is that it's such a roald dahl knock [TS]

00:11:26   off and i love it because i love reading [TS]

00:11:29   roald dahl as a kid especially James and [TS]

00:11:31   the Giant Peach and I know there's a [TS]

00:11:33   probably a tradition in in literature [TS]

00:11:36   especially among English authors of [TS]

00:11:38   these kind of awful aunts and uncles but [TS]

00:11:42   the harry potter is is james from james [TS]

00:11:44   the giant peach to me in many ways when [TS]

00:11:46   we when we first meet him with the with [TS]

00:11:48   the awful you know his parents are dead [TS]

00:11:50   room under the stairs that was to that [TS]

00:11:53   creep you out in number seven when he's [TS]

00:11:56   looking at that room and you're like [TS]

00:11:57   Jesus guys six-foot-tall he lived in [TS]

00:11:59   there and it suddenly seemed really like [TS]

00:12:02   it's sort of creepy in the books but [TS]

00:12:04   you're like in context it's weird and [TS]

00:12:06   whatever you're like not good but then [TS]

00:12:07   when you see the light of day it's like [TS]

00:12:09   oh that's child abuse isn't the same [TS]

00:12:11   time I mean I will say in the film they [TS]

00:12:13   have a really nice touching moment and [TS]

00:12:15   kind of it is creepy and it is weird [TS]

00:12:17   where you're like man he lived there but [TS]

00:12:18   at the same time like when he there's a [TS]

00:12:21   there's a moment in the film we just [TS]

00:12:22   everything sort of pauses for a second [TS]

00:12:24   he just takes a moment to open the [TS]

00:12:25   cupboard door and look in to where he [TS]

00:12:26   slept it's kind of like all we're seeing [TS]

00:12:29   character growth here however small were [TS]

00:12:32   the captured moment so let's shift gears [TS]

00:12:39   a little bit of the books have had you [TS]

00:12:40   all read the books [TS]

00:12:41   yes all those numbers a while oh i just [TS]

00:12:45   reread them all by accident I wife by [TS]

00:12:47   the way we did you trip and family and [TS]

00:12:50   your I'll were were run over all the [TS]

00:12:53   books it was like Tron almost only [TS]

00:12:55   infinitely more tedious know so this [TS]

00:12:58   woody allen's story like that projected [TS]

00:13:00   into the books [TS]

00:13:01   no I was my wife picked up and started [TS]

00:13:03   reading through the books and she made [TS]

00:13:04   of time she got busy with your children [TS]

00:13:06   all and i started reading through them [TS]

00:13:08   apparently don't raise children and [TS]

00:13:10   wound up over the course of months like [TS]

00:13:11   going through all seven again you know [TS]

00:13:13   rather quickly in some cases i was [TS]

00:13:14   curious how well they held up and some [TS]

00:13:16   did better than others [TS]

00:13:18   you know i'm struck again by reading it [TS]

00:13:20   that clearly after the first book or to [TS]

00:13:23   you that [TS]

00:13:24   rolling contract said not a word that I [TS]

00:13:26   right shall be touched nor remove it [TS]

00:13:28   because you know there's awkward things [TS]

00:13:30   there are continuity errors in the books [TS]

00:13:33   some of which were fixed in later [TS]

00:13:34   editions and such as the the primary [TS]

00:13:38   content and content EU whatever it is [TS]

00:13:40   the last spell cast out of the wand [TS]

00:13:43   that's very unix-like tell me the last [TS]

00:13:46   several commands run in this wand and [TS]

00:13:49   then there's the problem with book seven [TS]

00:13:51   which is that she introduces major new [TS]

00:13:53   automatic elements previously not even [TS]

00:13:56   foreshadowed now having reread them [TS]

00:13:57   recently [TS]

00:13:58   there is not a hint of most of the new [TS]

00:14:00   stuff in book seven it's as if she's [TS]

00:14:02   like well I'm kind of bored so instead [TS]

00:14:04   of just finishing this thing I wrote i'm [TS]

00:14:06   going to create a whole new thing and so [TS]

00:14:07   you recall in the books and the movies [TS]

00:14:09   this was hilarious moment where Ron's [TS]

00:14:11   like wait a minute we got to get a whole [TS]

00:14:13   bunch more stuff we order to get like [TS]

00:14:14   five Horcruxes now we have to get like [TS]

00:14:17   these three deathly hallows like what [TS]

00:14:18   the hell's going on and you know if I [TS]

00:14:21   felt like there was real sense of [TS]

00:14:23   reading it as a whole in reading 3,000 [TS]

00:14:26   pages that it could have used some [TS]

00:14:28   trimming and it does hold up really well [TS]

00:14:30   as a rollicking good stories but there [TS]

00:14:31   are stretches that get tedious simply [TS]

00:14:34   because I don't think she took the [TS]

00:14:36   effort or was willing to have the effort [TS]

00:14:38   taken to tighten up [TS]

00:14:40   well she could definitely I mean early [TS]

00:14:43   on you can see that she's learning as a [TS]

00:14:45   writer that uh you know she she starts [TS]

00:14:48   out and the quite honestly the writing [TS]

00:14:51   isn't very solid she she does love her [TS]

00:14:53   adverbs uh but uh but it does everybody [TS]

00:14:58   get a bad they get a battle but she does [TS]

00:15:00   I mean it's how many times you know Ron [TS]

00:15:02   Hermione shouted you know frustratedly [TS]

00:15:06   or something like that was like that you [TS]

00:15:07   I think we got it [TS]

00:15:09   JK i think we figured out she was [TS]

00:15:10   frustrated from what she said you didn't [TS]

00:15:12   really need to throw in how she said it [TS]

00:15:15   like stage direction she does that's [TS]

00:15:17   like one of the least enjoyable things I [TS]

00:15:19   think about her pro so she gets better [TS]

00:15:21   in that sense but you did you write you [TS]

00:15:23   trade that for this I'm an incredibly [TS]

00:15:28   successful author so you know don't [TS]

00:15:30   touch my stuff and you know who knows [TS]

00:15:32   how much an editor worked on that stuff [TS]

00:15:35   but you do get the sense that that there [TS]

00:15:37   was nobody there [TS]

00:15:37   to say you know JK did you know this [TS]

00:15:41   doesn't really this doesn't really work [TS]

00:15:42   or they said it and she said Matt it's [TS]

00:15:44   what I want to do this is a good thing [TS]

00:15:45   we all for our editors we work with [TS]

00:15:47   writers pros i mean i spent a lot more [TS]

00:15:48   time writing that anything i think we [TS]

00:15:50   all the different balance in that but I [TS]

00:15:51   spent a lot of time having my work [TS]

00:15:53   edited by terrific editors suck-up [TS]

00:15:55   suck-up and also editing stuff by other [TS]

00:15:58   people and you know there's definitely [TS]

00:16:00   there's such a thing as a gift of [TS]

00:16:02   editing if it's done without ego and I [TS]

00:16:04   feel like she and I don't have anything [TS]

00:16:06   against her personally I think she seems [TS]

00:16:07   like a lovely person for someone to [TS]

00:16:08   suddenly become a billionaire and not [TS]

00:16:11   become a total jerk it's pretty amazing [TS]

00:16:12   it's a terrible [TS]

00:16:13   it's like a curse making that much money [TS]

00:16:15   all of a sudden I know some people who [TS]

00:16:17   suddenly became vastly wealthy the.com [TS]

00:16:19   time it is not necessarily good for you [TS]

00:16:21   so I have nothing against her personally [TS]

00:16:22   but definitely as a as a writer I think [TS]

00:16:25   it would have proved her to have [TS]

00:16:27   developed a strong relationship with an [TS]

00:16:29   editor who would have helped her make [TS]

00:16:31   her really incredibly terrific ideas [TS]

00:16:34   even better and we didn't stop anyone [TS]

00:16:36   from reading them but I think when you [TS]

00:16:37   look at all these books survive the ages [TS]

00:16:39   and a hundred years we read this the way [TS]

00:16:42   or should say hundred years but you know [TS]

00:16:43   it's 60 years it will reduce the way we [TS]

00:16:45   lord of the rings and I question that I [TS]

00:16:47   think these may appear dated and bloated [TS]

00:16:49   and other books may take their place [TS]

00:16:51   because of that lack of of I think of [TS]

00:16:54   depth in producing something that has I [TS]

00:16:58   don't know that isn't its citizens [TS]

00:16:59   bloated as for the lack of a better word [TS]

00:17:01   I don't know lord of the rings that it [TS]

00:17:03   has has a lot of bloated and gold yeah [TS]

00:17:05   girls are you I'd like Lord but I don't [TS]

00:17:08   like gonna bring up but i don't think it [TS]

00:17:09   necessarily have tom bombadil was the [TS]

00:17:12   worst missing piece for me in your 141 [TS]

00:17:16   in 10 11 10 [TS]

00:17:19   well you read dan any thoughts about [TS]

00:17:24   that with you heard you guys are just [TS]

00:17:25   destroyed it was like yeah you do is to [TS]

00:17:28   kill involving like it carefully my head [TS]

00:17:31   and shaking it it's just I mean you know [TS]

00:17:34   I think I readily yeah I was one of [TS]

00:17:37   those people who read started reading [TS]

00:17:38   harry potter and there are a lot of [TS]

00:17:39   people criticizing it because I you know [TS]

00:17:41   definitely knew a lot of people are like [TS]

00:17:42   i'll come on yeah that's for kids or [TS]

00:17:44   whatever and i don't know i guess i [TS]

00:17:48   didn't spend a lot of time thinking [TS]

00:17:50   extra [TS]

00:17:51   really critically about them in terms of [TS]

00:17:53   you know how they were constructed or [TS]

00:17:56   the skill that went into the just [TS]

00:17:57   because i found the story so engrossed [TS]

00:17:59   own i have noted i think speaks for I [TS]

00:18:02   didn't notice the bad writing know [TS]

00:18:03   whatever I still don't necessarily think [TS]

00:18:04   about it is until i started reading them [TS]

00:18:07   aloud to my children because i read them [TS]

00:18:09   all and i started reading before I had [TS]

00:18:11   kids and I just enjoyed the story and [TS]

00:18:13   then yeah you read anything out loud and [TS]

00:18:16   you will get a perspective on it that is [TS]

00:18:17   it that's about the best way to take [TS]

00:18:20   something apart is to read it out loud [TS]

00:18:21   and and I really noticed and now we're [TS]

00:18:23   reading the fourth book and you know [TS]

00:18:24   she's a lot better in the third and [TS]

00:18:26   fourth books as a writer then she wasn't [TS]

00:18:28   the first couple but she also was more [TS]

00:18:29   expansive and maybe that's good that she [TS]

00:18:31   felt like she she could fill in all the [TS]

00:18:34   details of this world because [TS]

00:18:35   fundamentally I think the best thing [TS]

00:18:37   about JK Rowling as a writing talent is [TS]

00:18:41   world-building and universal create [TS]

00:18:43   absolutely the thing right and and with [TS]

00:18:45   a third book that that switch gets [TS]

00:18:47   flipped where it seems like she's been [TS]

00:18:49   given carte blanche now just fill the [TS]

00:18:52   world and tell your story and that and [TS]

00:18:54   it's and rape it's impossible to deny [TS]

00:18:56   that she's great she's fantastic coming [TS]

00:18:58   up with all these and I know you're [TS]

00:18:59   talking about all the additional [TS]

00:19:01   characters they get thrown in there but [TS]

00:19:02   she's great at coming up with all these [TS]

00:19:04   characters right i mean there are so [TS]

00:19:05   many memorable characters who even if [TS]

00:19:08   they only appear for you know a moment [TS]

00:19:10   or one of the books you know there are [TS]

00:19:12   people who stick in your head better [TS]

00:19:13   only after hearing that madam Rosmerta [TS]

00:19:16   who is a minor character again she has a [TS]

00:19:18   significant role at least one of the [TS]

00:19:20   books and you know i can picture her i [TS]

00:19:21   have seen in the movies but I can [TS]

00:19:23   picture that character even though i'm [TS]

00:19:24   sure she appears on you know 20 pages in [TS]

00:19:26   the entire set of thousands [TS]

00:19:28   I you know I like I I've always been a [TS]

00:19:30   fan of Gilderoy Lockhart just because I [TS]

00:19:33   don't know he's so over-the-top but he's [TS]

00:19:34   so well Don me so hilarious and kenneth [TS]

00:19:36   branagh was was awesome money and a [TS]

00:19:38   rather I didn't write back write did [TS]

00:19:40   they bring them but does need in this [TS]

00:19:41   work she hasn't yet look see as he comes [TS]

00:19:44   back right now because have the Beast [TS]

00:19:46   Olivier to the right but they break but [TS]

00:19:48   they bring back which I thought was [TS]

00:19:49   great because it's like hey remember him [TS]

00:19:52   he was like wind and she does that with [TS]

00:19:54   a lot of them to like but like there's a [TS]

00:19:55   lot of characters who are minor [TS]

00:19:57   characters or come up in one of the [TS]

00:19:58   earlier books who then resurfaced [TS]

00:20:00   briefly later on Sunday [TS]

00:20:01   cameo yes oh yeah i'm gonna read [TS]

00:20:05   something I have a reputation for giving [TS]

00:20:06   me a hard time about being the youngest [TS]

00:20:08   person in the room that's the mob [TS]

00:20:09   working a prodigy but you actually are [TS]

00:20:11   doing 15 years old [TS]

00:20:13   no no I didn't say that now the rest of [TS]

00:20:16   us when we start reading harry potter we [TS]

00:20:17   were all you know in our twenties or can [TS]

00:20:20   we help with you when you start reading [TS]

00:20:21   Harry Potter did you do your present [TS]

00:20:23   when did you first come out 90 late [TS]

00:20:25   nineties yeah late nineties i would have [TS]

00:20:27   been a teenager I would have been I [TS]

00:20:29   think because i remember getting a copy [TS]

00:20:31   of the first book when I was still in my [TS]

00:20:33   freshman or sophomore year of college so [TS]

00:20:34   I have been 18 or 19 when I could say [TS]

00:20:36   you were actually literally a kid when [TS]

00:20:37   the first book came out did you read it [TS]

00:20:39   at that time and do you read it [TS]

00:20:40   differently of you reread it differently [TS]

00:20:42   now than when you read it at that time i [TS]

00:20:44   mean i will say that i started reading i [TS]

00:20:47   started reading when the second book [TS]

00:20:49   came out and I was on age with the [TS]

00:20:51   characters while lose were coming out [TS]

00:20:53   just not to date myself but so I was [TS]

00:20:57   actually i was reading through at around [TS]

00:21:01   there's a couple other words like the [TS]

00:21:03   books to jump ahead and then i would [TS]

00:21:04   jump ahead and just depended on release [TS]

00:21:06   schedule and stuff like that and i think [TS]

00:21:07   by the time the seventh book come out [TS]

00:21:08   the timespan had I had grown older at [TS]

00:21:11   that point but it was very very [TS]

00:21:13   interesting because I literally grew up [TS]

00:21:15   with the books and I like when i first [TS]

00:21:19   got ahold of them i remember being the [TS]

00:21:20   backseat of my cousin's car and she she [TS]

00:21:23   was reading I think the second book at [TS]

00:21:25   the time and I at that point was just [TS]

00:21:28   such a voracious reader where if I [TS]

00:21:30   didn't have a book i would sit and look [TS]

00:21:32   over somebody's shoulder can read while [TS]

00:21:34   they were reading and get mad because [TS]

00:21:36   they wouldn't flip the page fast enough [TS]

00:21:38   and I'd be done so i just be sitting and [TS]

00:21:39   like all right now i wanted i want to [TS]

00:21:41   read more of the story so when she put [TS]

00:21:43   the book down i basically stole it in [TS]

00:21:45   the course of like two hours [TS]

00:21:47   crushed it because I was just so eager [TS]

00:21:48   to actually it's like this book is [TS]

00:21:50   interesting it's fascinating and reading [TS]

00:21:52   it like those little those little pieces [TS]

00:21:54   from then on I was completely hooked and [TS]

00:21:56   I went back and read the first and then [TS]

00:21:58   kind of just I i went to a couple of the [TS]

00:22:01   mid lighten that releases I think more [TS]

00:22:03   fun of midnight releases then you know [TS]

00:22:06   anything else but I mean definitely as I [TS]

00:22:10   grew older I mean here okay here's my [TS]

00:22:12   terrible shameful secret is that [TS]

00:22:15   I used to edit harry potter fanfiction [TS]

00:22:17   oh there we go [TS]

00:22:18   secrets all right now we're getting [TS]

00:22:21   somewhere to yes [TS]

00:22:22   31 cast know we are we've made it so [TS]

00:22:28   that was a hold of this podcast was to [TS]

00:22:30   get you to confess to you that there's [TS]

00:22:32   an intervention program because there is [TS]

00:22:34   actually harry potter fanfiction that i [TS]

00:22:36   have written somewhere on the internet [TS]

00:22:37   but i'm not telling anybody wear [TS]

00:22:39   something to hold on the major under sin [TS]

00:22:43   rolled well [TS]

00:22:45   wow that I mean it's just I it's I only [TS]

00:22:48   say it because it really is about the [TS]

00:22:50   world-building like terms of in terms of [TS]

00:22:53   her stories I mean looking at her books [TS]

00:22:56   now and like I haven't reread them since [TS]

00:22:59   the last book came out which is what was [TS]

00:23:01   that 2007-2008 was three years ago [TS]

00:23:04   wasn't yeah 2007 i think but i mean i [TS]

00:23:09   remember everyone has been recording [TS]

00:23:11   this it was just three days ago for that [TS]

00:23:14   far ahead we are special i but I mean I [TS]

00:23:18   i haven't read the books in a couple [TS]

00:23:19   years so and I've definitely grown a lot [TS]

00:23:21   in terms of like looking at pros and [TS]

00:23:24   things like that but I mean before I [TS]

00:23:26   mean the last time out of there are [TS]

00:23:28   serious flaws and I mean I know I [TS]

00:23:30   noticed that even while reading it [TS]

00:23:31   through the first time its like you read [TS]

00:23:33   it you read it when you first get it at [TS]

00:23:34   the midnight screening and you read it [TS]

00:23:36   in six hours and you're like oh my god [TS]

00:23:37   this is great and then you go back and [TS]

00:23:39   you do the second read over the course [TS]

00:23:41   of a couple days really like ingesting [TS]

00:23:43   the information and you're like well I [TS]

00:23:46   mean there are some good things the [TS]

00:23:47   fourth book is a complete mess [TS]

00:23:49   Maria work just meanders all over the [TS]

00:23:51   poly-si as I'm reading it just now this [TS]

00:23:53   will be an interesting ride for me and [TS]

00:23:55   my kids [TS]

00:23:56   yeah it's it's a very interesting book [TS]

00:23:58   to read out loud [TS]

00:23:59   actually that was talking with the [TS]

00:24:00   fourth book is that stottlemyre oh yeah [TS]

00:24:03   which is just try wizard what like [TS]

00:24:05   everything we told you the last three [TS]

00:24:07   books is now incorrect and accept [TS]

00:24:09   accented and different [TS]

00:24:11   yes which is such a shame i mean [TS]

00:24:12   although it has one of the best I are [TS]

00:24:15   probably my favorite ending of any of [TS]

00:24:17   the books yes really yes because it's [TS]

00:24:19   the pivot point for the entire series [TS]

00:24:21   right now that's the point at which all [TS]

00:24:22   of a sudden everything is real that was [TS]

00:24:25   that was the Stars first Harry Potter [TS]

00:24:27   book where [TS]

00:24:28   I i caught up to the store its story and [TS]

00:24:30   there were no more books yet and i [TS]

00:24:32   remember reading that on a vacation and [TS]

00:24:34   my wife had already read it and I turned [TS]

00:24:35   to her after the end of that book and I [TS]

00:24:37   said all things aren't looking good for [TS]

00:24:38   our friends and it was like a real [TS]

00:24:40   cliffhanger because the next book wasn't [TS]

00:24:43   out yet and so yeah it'll be interesting [TS]

00:24:45   to see how it how it goes fortunately [TS]

00:24:48   it's so long that it will probably be a [TS]

00:24:49   year before my kids and I finish it [TS]

00:24:52   yeah well i mean i will say have having [TS]

00:24:54   read the books when they were current [TS]

00:24:56   like that and having to wait [TS]

00:24:57   the couple years I mean you get you get [TS]

00:24:59   very anxious about where these things [TS]

00:25:02   are going because it really is as I said [TS]

00:25:03   about the world and everybody was being [TS]

00:25:05   saying about about the world of the [TS]

00:25:07   characters and I think that's why harry [TS]

00:25:09   potter had such a giant and fiction [TS]

00:25:11   based as well as it was like all right [TS]

00:25:13   JK Rowling you're taking three and a [TS]

00:25:15   half years to write your book so we're [TS]

00:25:17   gonna write a different story [TS]

00:25:19   more interestingly for you it was for [TS]

00:25:21   the same reason that star wars had such [TS]

00:25:22   as exactly popular one right so then [TS]

00:25:25   what what kind of stuff would you would [TS]

00:25:27   you would you do I mean you don't have [TS]

00:25:28   to go into detail but just curious what [TS]

00:25:30   caught your attention you wanna you know [TS]

00:25:32   what was the stuff that you wanted to [TS]

00:25:33   fill in fill in the gap right now i mean [TS]

00:25:36   the community that I worked with [TS]

00:25:37   primarily was actually very much on me [TS]

00:25:39   on the older generation and not so much [TS]

00:25:42   about Harry Ron and Hermione but and on [TS]

00:25:44   the minor characters on open the loop in [TS]

00:25:48   Sirius Black [TS]

00:25:49   I've calories yeah well not so much [TS]

00:25:52   tonks because she hadn't really when I [TS]

00:25:54   was doing she hadn't even been drawn [TS]

00:25:56   she's a little generational she's [TS]

00:25:58   younger than loop in there quite a bit [TS]

00:25:59   younger the answer is too but I mean [TS]

00:26:01   also she comes she's introduced in the [TS]

00:26:03   fourth or fifth book i think very very [TS]

00:26:07   and at the time i think i started doing [TS]

00:26:10   it around the time of the third book so [TS]

00:26:12   as it relates to a younger woman who [TS]

00:26:14   associates with a bunch of older guys so [TS]

00:26:17   that's that it's a James it is it is it [TS]

00:26:19   you know James Potter and his and his [TS]

00:26:21   men rather well I mean it was like some [TS]

00:26:25   some of the stuff that we worked on was [TS]

00:26:27   actually like nineteen seventies era [TS]

00:26:29   them in school that kind of thing and [TS]

00:26:31   then I one of the fan bases that I [TS]

00:26:34   worked with kind of branched off into [TS]

00:26:35   this whole kind of alternative universe [TS]

00:26:37   where it's like oh well [TS]

00:26:39   Voldemort was never defeated [TS]

00:26:41   and these characters are all still alive [TS]

00:26:42   and are dealing with the premise of what [TS]

00:26:46   happened basically if you didn't go away [TS]

00:26:47   for ten years and like all of the stuff [TS]

00:26:50   that I i was always attracted to working [TS]

00:26:52   on all of the not so much like the main [TS]

00:26:55   cannon stuff but all these minor [TS]

00:26:57   characters and getting to play with [TS]

00:26:58   these minor characters and really give [TS]

00:27:01   them a life that they otherwise don't [TS]

00:27:03   have within weeks themselves universe [TS]

00:27:05   there's a recurring theme there too [TS]

00:27:07   which is I guess your people see [TS]

00:27:08   something as you find out you know Harry [TS]

00:27:10   they're facing immediate threat always [TS]

00:27:12   and it's like wait a minute you know [TS]

00:27:13   voldemort was actually a problem [TS]

00:27:15   30 years ago it was a problem fifty [TS]

00:27:18   years ago and there was was a [TS]

00:27:19   grindelwald don't matter that you know [TS]

00:27:21   he was 60 or 80 years ago and of course [TS]

00:27:24   there's going to be a recurring pattern [TS]

00:27:25   of some evil wizard rising to the top [TS]

00:27:27   attempting to destroy the mobile world [TS]

00:27:29   to seize power and it's this it's this [TS]

00:27:31   cycle and I don't think she explores [TS]

00:27:33   that theme as deeply in the book I mean [TS]

00:27:35   it's there and she's consciously using [TS]

00:27:37   it clearly to weave these stories to [TS]

00:27:39   make Harry have more sympathy with his [TS]

00:27:42   father have more sympathy with uh with [TS]

00:27:44   Dumbledore and Dumbledore occupied a [TS]

00:27:46   role precisely like Harry but without [TS]

00:27:49   the friend you know Harry out of your [TS]

00:27:50   friendship with Baltimore obviously that [TS]

00:27:53   would have been cute you know voldemort [TS]

00:27:54   area are great friends until one day he [TS]

00:27:56   killed all I mean in some ways I think [TS]

00:27:58   that sort of jobs with my all my long [TS]

00:28:01   jesting theory bet i mean i'm curious to [TS]

00:28:04   see what growling does post harry potter [TS]

00:28:07   and I know she did she did a brief we [TS]

00:28:10   should be a book that was kinda like a [TS]

00:28:12   harry potter related book the little [TS]

00:28:15   harder yeah and I sort of always thought [TS]

00:28:17   well she'll probably go on and do [TS]

00:28:19   something else [TS]

00:28:19   it probably won't be as high like not [TS]

00:28:21   that it won't be you know have its own [TS]

00:28:23   merits or whatever but it's hard to [TS]

00:28:24   follow up on something that has been [TS]

00:28:27   such a phenomenon right and should i do [TS]

00:28:29   is Michigan George Lucas are working [TS]

00:28:31   together and so basically yeah so I [TS]

00:28:33   visit her going off in like coming up [TS]

00:28:35   with some of the books and like they're [TS]

00:28:36   okay but they're not harry potter and [TS]

00:28:37   then eventually in like 10 years she [TS]

00:28:39   writes you know prequels to hear popular [TS]

00:28:41   no yeah she actually is she is quoted in [TS]

00:28:44   a i want to say it's like an Oprah thing [TS]

00:28:47   but it's a she was quoted as saying that [TS]

00:28:50   she has ideas for three more books that [TS]

00:28:52   are Harry Potter books and she doesn't [TS]

00:28:53   know if she [TS]

00:28:54   overwrite them but she might and this is [TS]

00:28:56   funny but only because of course you [TS]

00:28:58   might say that except she said when the [TS]

00:28:59   door open when the seventh book came out [TS]

00:29:01   she said seven outs and that's it and [TS]

00:29:03   yeah the doors swing open and it would [TS]

00:29:06   not surprise me link and get the st. [TS]

00:29:09   George Lucas the same thing you went [TS]

00:29:10   back and forth the years about how many [TS]

00:29:11   actually rather be sequels and prequels [TS]

00:29:13   though I I'd really rather have her take [TS]

00:29:15   off up from where she left off and that [TS]

00:29:18   in the epilogue of the seventh book and [TS]

00:29:20   Terry gets a job and you go through [TS]

00:29:22   midlife crisis little bored he chose [TS]

00:29:24   there's no Dark Lord defy lens point [TS]

00:29:26   there's always another evil wizard to [TS]

00:29:28   fight right so what are you waiting to [TS]

00:29:31   pull out lord of the rings that was [TS]

00:29:33   insulting thing was I read his letters [TS]

00:29:35   at some point that were published in i [TS]

00:29:37   believe it was in there someone said why [TS]

00:29:39   don't you write more and he said well [TS]

00:29:40   you know everything is declined this [TS]

00:29:42   sort of in in in lord of the rings on [TS]

00:29:44   the books and the movies you know it's [TS]

00:29:45   every minute is a little bit less than [TS]

00:29:47   one before the grand jury is diminishing [TS]

00:29:49   so rapidly you know everything is [TS]

00:29:50   leading the world which was once a thing [TS]

00:29:52   of beauty and terror becomes very [TS]

00:29:54   mundane that sort of the the tolkien [TS]

00:29:56   thing and so he said you know well after [TS]

00:29:58   the defeat of Sauron there's no handle [TS]

00:30:00   elves leave and everything sort of [TS]

00:30:01   receipts like what would a book after [TS]

00:30:03   that BB kids playing at being works or [TS]

00:30:05   something like we very boring and so [TS]

00:30:07   that's part of the concern is Baltimore [TS]

00:30:09   it was you don't want to swallow up the [TS]

00:30:11   earth and destroy death and so forth [TS]

00:30:13   like what you know what's next a guy [TS]

00:30:14   with runs you know has terrible curses [TS]

00:30:17   or something I don't know what's hard to [TS]

00:30:19   top without going more minuscule more [TS]

00:30:21   more situational and I want to see with [TS]

00:30:23   Harry dealing with the like the [TS]

00:30:25   mundanity of an everyday job that that [TS]

00:30:28   was just you know he works he's like a [TS]

00:30:29   middle-management actually right Dan [TS]

00:30:32   youyou a fan of detective stories right [TS]

00:30:35   isn't being in or isn't he basically [TS]

00:30:37   like a wizard private was will not drive [TS]

00:30:40   and I but he's like wizard wizard cop [TS]

00:30:42   wizard everything so we should do the [TS]

00:30:44   wizard like he'll become kills you to [TS]

00:30:45   shop there it will get divorced from [TS]

00:30:47   jenny he'll start drinking will be all [TS]

00:30:49   grizzled we don't have to make a home [TS]

00:30:51   out of retirement [TS]

00:30:52   no no I want your badge [TS]

00:30:54   and your wand on my desk with Nexus 6 [TS]

00:30:57   models that come back and you just you [TS]

00:31:00   just want Harry Potter's Terriers [TS]

00:31:02   basically yes always don't want [TS]

00:31:04   everything I i think there's you know [TS]

00:31:06   Harry investigate something and it turns [TS]

00:31:08   out to be something greater and more [TS]

00:31:10   threatening and and he ido and he has to [TS]

00:31:13   call on are some people who are familiar [TS]

00:31:14   who are now at Hogwarts and you know [TS]

00:31:17   what the other thing would be would be [TS]

00:31:18   the opposite is the way to write this up [TS]

00:31:20   school books because we're giving [TS]

00:31:21   rolling suggestions yeah it is it's the [TS]

00:31:24   it's the what happened with the x-men [TS]

00:31:26   movies also it's the once the sort of [TS]

00:31:28   internal threads that with you deal with [TS]

00:31:29   the external which is that everyone in [TS]

00:31:31   the muggle world another world finds out [TS]

00:31:32   about wizards and sets out to [TS]

00:31:33   exterminate them you know just got a [TS]

00:31:36   little bored or path that has been taken [TS]

00:31:38   or and bear with me on this [TS]

00:31:40   there's a crystal skull ha ha ha me [TS]

00:31:44   first by chance [TS]

00:31:46   um there was a kingdom I mean right i [TS]

00:31:48   don't know if you can you can you can [TS]

00:31:50   follow me on this one and some pyramids [TS]

00:31:52   an alienware monkeys of magic around all [TS]

00:31:55   the monkeys [TS]

00:31:55   why do we have waited mother's efforts [TS]

00:31:57   at does happen sadly no there are no so [TS]

00:32:01   magical world is without sampling so [TS]

00:32:03   that is my that is my biggest the [TS]

00:32:04   biggest load Harry Potter books is no [TS]

00:32:06   Zeppelin's except in the movie there are [TS]

00:32:09   Zeppelin flowers [TS]

00:32:12   alright spoiler goes up LOM so-so ginny [TS]

00:32:15   weasley you brought up jenny i wanted to [TS]

00:32:19   ask about the relationships and the [TS]

00:32:21   Harry Potter books because for a long [TS]

00:32:23   time I really thought that it was it was [TS]

00:32:25   the you know Harry Hermione relationship [TS]

00:32:27   was the obvious one and and then it was [TS]

00:32:29   fascinating to see that beast you know [TS]

00:32:31   steered away to run and Hermione and and [TS]

00:32:35   looking back to notice that that yeah [TS]

00:32:36   Jenny weasley is kind of kicking around [TS]

00:32:39   from Star need like from the get-go in [TS]

00:32:41   any idea to try always the first time [TS]

00:32:44   she season I always thought I I never [TS]

00:32:47   thought for a minute that hermione and [TS]

00:32:49   harry were going to become involved [TS]

00:32:51   because it didn't seem I mean that the [TS]

00:32:53   thing the the relationship between her [TS]

00:32:56   and Ron just the way that they rub each [TS]

00:32:59   other the wrong way constantly is such a [TS]

00:33:02   great you know example of you know a [TS]

00:33:06   weapon year old boys and girls [TS]

00:33:08   right constantly at each other's throats [TS]

00:33:10   and of course it's all just you know [TS]

00:33:13   they have you know these these childhood [TS]

00:33:14   crushes on each other i mean it i think [TS]

00:33:16   she captured that beautifully and I [TS]

00:33:18   think it never you know it never really [TS]

00:33:20   seemed to make sense for for Harry in [TS]

00:33:23   the same way that you know that Luke [TS]

00:33:26   Skywalker is never going to end up with [TS]

00:33:27   Princess Leia right other than mr. tank [TS]

00:33:30   but i think there's definitely a you [TS]

00:33:32   know and i think they brought in Jimmy [TS]

00:33:34   there is you know the best friend's [TS]

00:33:35   sister whatever to provide that level of [TS]

00:33:37   like tension between harry and his best [TS]

00:33:40   friend but it also yeah it's alluded to [TS]

00:33:42   from book one or two right was a [TS]

00:33:44   two-person first comes up well because [TS]

00:33:46   he plays a major part netbook to yeah [TS]

00:33:48   you guys right because she gets she gets [TS]

00:33:50   ya possessed by Tom Riddle's diary and [TS]

00:33:53   taken down into the lair of the of the [TS]

00:33:56   well I guess it's the chamber of secrets [TS]

00:33:58   or something you know and I mean really [TS]

00:34:00   once you rescue a girl from a giant [TS]

00:34:02   basilisk I mean what's what other [TS]

00:34:04   courses that right my hero my wife you [TS]

00:34:07   know whether the basket [TS]

00:34:09   well take it was there was this it was a [TS]

00:34:13   garter snake but why did have always [TS]

00:34:15   take a sword harrison was a whole was [TS]

00:34:18   lying in the grass but it looked like a [TS]

00:34:20   snake but it was more i should warn [TS]

00:34:23   anybody who's going to go see part 1 of [TS]

00:34:25   the movie there are some scary snake [TS]

00:34:27   seems in the hold here [TS]

00:34:29   my wife is good just not sure I two [TS]

00:34:32   people leave out there is 16 somebody [TS]

00:34:34   that's hilarious i remember the little [TS]

00:34:36   like snakes the oh now yeah i remember [TS]

00:34:39   my scrapbook yeah I apparently I've been [TS]

00:34:42   repressed the recovered memory yes I i [TS]

00:34:45   actually jumped out of my seat and a [TS]

00:34:46   couple of those and I'm like I don't get [TS]

00:34:48   scared that easily in movies but there [TS]

00:34:50   are a couple of just like out of nowhere [TS]

00:34:51   no dramatic chord no nothing it's like [TS]

00:34:54   oh my god big snake so just you know if [TS]

00:34:57   you're gonna go see this with kids [TS]

00:34:58   especially all yours or people afraid of [TS]

00:35:01   snakes for i saw it was being i just [TS]

00:35:03   returned from a physical we have four to [TS]

00:35:05   six year old one fate was a corporate [TS]

00:35:07   screening out with friends and their rob [TS]

00:35:09   a local company had bought a show before [TS]

00:35:11   midnight inside one's friends and [TS]

00:35:13   everyone is all adults in the audience [TS]

00:35:15   except one couple had brought like the [TS]

00:35:17   24 26 year-old and to their credit I [TS]

00:35:21   know the kids talked a little and [TS]

00:35:22   whatever it made some noise at times but [TS]

00:35:24   anyway shrieking I would have thought [TS]

00:35:25   they could have to bundle the kids out [TS]

00:35:27   you don't take them directly to therapy [TS]

00:35:29   but apparently not [TS]

00:35:30   that's later later that's part 2 [TS]

00:35:34   let's run through no don't think back to [TS]

00:35:36   the other about it so I'm the my next [TS]

00:35:39   question for you guys is about the [TS]

00:35:41   deaths in the series and this is [TS]

00:35:42   interesting because it's the children's [TS]

00:35:43   series and it starts out a lot lighter [TS]

00:35:45   and it gets a lot darker as it goes [TS]

00:35:46   along and Dan referred to it earlier the [TS]

00:35:49   the death of of Cedric Diggory right is [TS]

00:35:53   is the pivot point in some ways of the [TS]

00:35:56   entire series and is quite a challenge [TS]

00:35:58   because he comes back as a vampire haha [TS]

00:36:00   oh no stop it [TS]

00:36:04   that's not no don't even need our [TS]

00:36:08   memories forever i will always choose to [TS]

00:36:11   remember him as as Cedric Diggory but [TS]

00:36:13   I'm with you there i mean quite quite [TS]

00:36:15   shocking and in fact and then there are [TS]

00:36:16   more deaths as we go i'm just kind of [TS]

00:36:19   wondering what what your thoughts are [TS]

00:36:21   about the people you know that the dark [TS]

00:36:23   turn that happens in the series [TS]

00:36:25   go ahead and look what I said the series [TS]

00:36:28   definitely I mean it starts off as a [TS]

00:36:31   shot like a children's book series but I [TS]

00:36:33   definitely I mean you start getting the [TS]

00:36:34   adult themes in the third book where you [TS]

00:36:36   i mean you're talking about a prison [TS]

00:36:38   where Dementors and people are sucking [TS]

00:36:41   Souls from I mean there's there's some [TS]

00:36:43   dark stuff there and then with the [TS]

00:36:44   fourth book with subjects Cedric's death [TS]

00:36:47   I mean you that's that's the first step [TS]

00:36:49   death period in the series right there [TS]

00:36:51   no I mean they're obviously the [TS]

00:36:53   allusions to Harry's parents but there's [TS]

00:36:55   a personal screech yeah like Tom Riddle [TS]

00:36:57   kills people in flashback right yeah [TS]

00:37:01   flash but it's not really it's not real [TS]

00:37:04   and it's not there in 5-10 all alluded [TS]

00:37:08   to or the past right I'm ready made [TS]

00:37:10   various parents died in the first [TS]

00:37:11   chapter right but yeah yeah it'sit's all [TS]

00:37:14   illusions and your two after-the-fact [TS]

00:37:15   separate was killed on on screen on page [TS]

00:37:19   as it were and it's unexpected to write [TS]

00:37:22   like you go in knowing Harry's parents [TS]

00:37:24   are are dead kind of if you know [TS]

00:37:25   anything about the premise the series [TS]

00:37:26   right he's an orphan [TS]

00:37:28   I mean no but Cedric's not only that but [TS]

00:37:29   it's I think the thing that got me most [TS]

00:37:32   about that [TS]

00:37:32   I love it when when maybe this is the [TS]

00:37:34   love is a strong word but I really when [TS]

00:37:37   in character authors killing off [TS]

00:37:40   characters i think i find it very moving [TS]

00:37:41   i find it very you know if you can make [TS]

00:37:43   you care enough about someone that when [TS]

00:37:46   they kill them off [TS]

00:37:47   you're like oh my god you know you're [TS]

00:37:48   actually taking it back i think that [TS]

00:37:51   that you know indicates to me that [TS]

00:37:53   there's a certain level of power and [TS]

00:37:55   involvement in that writing and I think [TS]

00:37:57   Cedric's what's so damning about [TS]

00:37:59   Cedric's is that it's it's off-the-cuff [TS]

00:38:02   right like it's totally he you know it's [TS]

00:38:06   just casual the way that voldemort kills [TS]

00:38:08   him [TS]

00:38:08   well it's yeah it's monday is that he's [TS]

00:38:11   not giving a defense ever you know every [TS]

00:38:13   sci-fi fantasy whatever before someone [TS]

00:38:15   dies they put up the spirited defense or [TS]

00:38:17   it's only as oh my god they're almost [TS]

00:38:19   killed if it wasn't for that foul or [TS]

00:38:21   they get their death warrant [TS]

00:38:22   don't sit right on i'll either operatic [TS]

00:38:25   or there's that tender moment and that's [TS]

00:38:27   just how I just saw this in a show where [TS]

00:38:29   we're always in Chuck sorry spoiler [TS]

00:38:32   alert well well not have known for last [TS]

00:38:36   season's chuck out last season's Chuck [TS]

00:38:38   far the spoiler horn mmm brush and scott [TS]

00:38:43   bakula sad has the scene where he [TS]

00:38:46   finally goes to his daughter and he [TS]

00:38:47   apologizes for everything that he's done [TS]

00:38:49   is a bad father and says that from now [TS]

00:38:51   on he'll be a good father and my lighter [TS]

00:38:53   do dead he's dead so it's you either get [TS]

00:38:56   that moment of closure before the death [TS]

00:38:58   or or its this operatic death now Dan [TS]

00:39:01   were you saying that you liked the fact [TS]

00:39:03   that that Cedric's death was so [TS]

00:39:05   off-the-cuff that's where children yeah [TS]

00:39:06   oh yeah oh yeah i mean like that but [TS]

00:39:08   it's okay i'm not saying i like it i'm [TS]

00:39:10   saying it's effective race yeah well [TS]

00:39:12   Riley it it makes you makes your hair go [TS]

00:39:14   R Us oh my god but how do they have what [TS]

00:39:16   you wanted Cedric Diggory video is that [TS]

00:39:18   you're his little person haha its but [TS]

00:39:22   you know what's funny is so citric is [TS]

00:39:24   set up the obstetric and Neville not as [TS]

00:39:26   much the movies unfortunately but Cedric [TS]

00:39:28   Neville and hairier setup as interesting [TS]

00:39:30   parallels I mean they were never [TS]

00:39:32   supposed to be a bumbler center can do [TS]

00:39:34   no wrong and Harry somewhere in the [TS]

00:39:35   middle but he's the chosen one he's the [TS]

00:39:36   one who's to wahoos lot this is all [TS]

00:39:38   fallen and it could have been sort of [TS]

00:39:40   anything about the same age and you know [TS]

00:39:43   but Cedric is the hero and this in [TS]

00:39:45   Harry's [TS]

00:39:45   sort of not exactly the anti-hero but [TS]

00:39:47   he's the reluctant hero he does what is [TS]

00:39:49   right because it is necessary not [TS]

00:39:51   because he wants to be in that role so [TS]

00:39:53   in Cedric dicey like holy crap [TS]

00:39:55   Baltimore can kill the hero what chances [TS]

00:39:58   Harry half we know he's gonna come out [TS]

00:39:59   ascendant in our hearts but in the terms [TS]

00:40:02   of narrative you're like everything just [TS]

00:40:03   changed me and killed he killed the kid [TS]

00:40:05   right he killed ya student at horton [TS]

00:40:08   meant that means that our friends are [TS]

00:40:10   you know even though this is [TS]

00:40:11   theoretically a children's series [TS]

00:40:13   no one is is safe and we're told for [TS]

00:40:17   books [TS]

00:40:17   nothing can get in or out of Hogwarts [TS]

00:40:19   nothing get out told again and again i'm [TS]

00:40:21   sure that was I'm sure she had that arc [TS]

00:40:23   in mind that she set us up for years of [TS]

00:40:26   reading that Hogwarts is a safe place [TS]

00:40:28   just like the dursleys in that it's like [TS]

00:40:30   oh wait it's not really needed was a [TS]

00:40:32   long day off and of course that that [TS]

00:40:34   goes through the later books to write I [TS]

00:40:37   mean well in the 70's look more or less [TS]

00:40:38   wood isn't it would also with [TS]

00:40:40   Dumbledore's death Highway and six [TS]

00:40:42   really being that the point at which are [TS]

00:40:43   like wow [TS]

00:40:44   not only is this not safe this is [TS]

00:40:46   probably like the most dangerous places [TS]

00:40:48   i I'm thinking of the really shocking to [TS]

00:40:50   me that the the climax of the seventh [TS]

00:40:53   book we're in a war is five in the [TS]

00:40:55   hallways of hogwarts and lots of people [TS]

00:40:58   died in HD [TS]

00:41:00   wow you know you could expect that again [TS]

00:41:03   like lord of the rings they're out in [TS]

00:41:04   the field somewhere and things happen [TS]

00:41:05   and no it's right in the school where [TS]

00:41:07   we've been all along and then you take [TS]

00:41:08   that time away and by the time our [TS]

00:41:10   characters come back to the school [TS]

00:41:12   they're bringing a terrible things with [TS]

00:41:15   them hopefully the other chilling moment [TS]

00:41:17   in the series for me and this was [TS]

00:41:19   presented well the movie in books [TS]

00:41:20   there's first photo book seven you know [TS]

00:41:22   something's going to happen [TS]

00:41:23   things are getting bad and she's given [TS]

00:41:25   us all you know in fact you expect this [TS]

00:41:26   out of the book might open with things [TS]

00:41:28   being really bad but she gives us a [TS]

00:41:29   little bit of calm something's not quite [TS]

00:41:31   right things are building up the wedding [TS]

00:41:32   is going to happen and i think the book [TS]

00:41:35   did it better all the movie did quite [TS]

00:41:36   well when it's the ministry has fallen [TS]

00:41:39   scripture is dead flee and it's it's [TS]

00:41:42   practically that moment Lord of the [TS]

00:41:43   Rings fly you fools you know it's just [TS]

00:41:45   you're like oh wow evil just one didn't [TS]

00:41:48   it [TS]

00:41:49   so how do you claw back from this [TS]

00:41:51   massive massive defeat [TS]

00:41:53   yeah I like that we go a lot heavily [TS]

00:41:56   into the darkness before the characters [TS]

00:41:58   are [TS]

00:41:58   get to the inevitable triumph right it's [TS]

00:42:00   not just they're gonna win all along [TS]

00:42:02   yeah but like stuff gets bad and it's [TS]

00:42:05   going to get worse before it gets better [TS]

00:42:07   yes to continue to give a portion yeah [TS]

00:42:09   no I mean I think that to me that you [TS]

00:42:12   know I find out more and more effective [TS]

00:42:13   and more engaging than if it were just [TS]

00:42:15   do you no good always triumphs obviously [TS]

00:42:17   he gets shriven I mean this is a classic [TS]

00:42:19   like Christian mythology sort of thing [TS]

00:42:21   too is Harry has to go through us to [TS]

00:42:22   have his ego battered his soul battery [TS]

00:42:25   has to die no one has to die and be [TS]

00:42:28   reborn not there's no no mythology or [TS]

00:42:32   Dogma or any kind of reference there of [TS]

00:42:34   course no no nobody asked me yesterday [TS]

00:42:36   he's convinced soul is completely [TS]

00:42:38   shriveled below are you talking about [TS]

00:42:40   the matrix haha [TS]

00:42:41   pretty much yes well let's hang at neo [TS]

00:42:46   is harry potter go ahead ready [TS]

00:42:48   oh no I was just gonna say in terms of [TS]

00:42:50   Harry's journey and all the things that [TS]

00:42:52   kind of gets thrown Adam I think my [TS]

00:42:54   personal and remains the most chilling [TS]

00:42:56   moment in the series is not necessarily [TS]

00:42:57   Dumbledore's death or anything but [TS]

00:42:59   actually the end of book five with the [TS]

00:43:02   battle in the ministry and I just have [TS]

00:43:04   serious God way beyond the veil years [TS]

00:43:09   well that you want to talk about it you [TS]

00:43:11   want to talk about a moment that comes [TS]

00:43:12   out of nowhere where you're completely [TS]

00:43:14   not expecting it's like he's not he [TS]

00:43:16   doesn't get a heroic death he doesn't [TS]

00:43:17   get anything it's just one moment he's [TS]

00:43:19   good he's there and then the next gone [TS]

00:43:21   and it's and with it you kind of get 33 [TS]

00:43:25   well note i guess two books to know 33 [TS]

00:43:29   yes i'm going to get number 345 great [TS]

00:43:32   3.14159 you get three books of basically [TS]

00:43:37   Harry learning that he still has family [TS]

00:43:39   and he still has someone who knows his [TS]

00:43:41   father intimately and who you know who [TS]

00:43:44   could conceivably care about him he has [TS]

00:43:46   a home and all of that and even though I [TS]

00:43:49   mean the person that he you know cares [TS]

00:43:51   about is a wanted murderer he still has [TS]

00:43:53   that connection and then all of a sudden [TS]

00:43:54   that's gone he has no you know I always [TS]

00:43:58   found that moment a little bit i don't [TS]

00:44:00   know not quite hollow but there is [TS]

00:44:01   something missing in that moment for me [TS]

00:44:03   maybe it's just a matter of the death [TS]

00:44:04   where I don't know maybe as part of it [TS]

00:44:08   is because you kind of feel like well [TS]

00:44:09   you [TS]

00:44:10   easy dad in or is he just like trapped [TS]

00:44:13   and i'll come back and it seemed the [TS]

00:44:15   inconclusive miss of it i read just I [TS]

00:44:18   read those pages / like 10 times when I [TS]

00:44:22   got to that part of the book because I [TS]

00:44:23   was like what just happened and I can [TS]

00:44:27   only get maximum profit are I can only [TS]

00:44:29   conclude that she did it at and I think [TS]

00:44:32   about it even read her talking about at [TS]

00:44:33   one point I only conclude she did [TS]

00:44:36   exactly what she wanted to do there but [TS]

00:44:40   i find it yes I find it very strange [TS]

00:44:41   because it does lack gravitas we were [TS]

00:44:44   just making fun of how every death has a [TS]

00:44:46   moment of oh you know operatic but [TS]

00:44:48   Cedric Cedric steph had gravitas even if [TS]

00:44:50   you get this wrong he brought his body [TS]

00:44:52   back that whole thing they like the [TS]

00:44:54   father right behind bring the body back [TS]

00:44:56   to and this was blinking blinking you [TS]

00:44:58   miss it right it's like no way did what [TS]

00:45:00   happened there did I miss him dying and [TS]

00:45:02   then I got back up and said no he just [TS]

00:45:03   kind of went through this thing and it's [TS]

00:45:05   not really it's like a metaphorical [TS]

00:45:07   there's a difference between the death [TS]

00:45:09   being sort of off the cuff and and the [TS]

00:45:14   way that it's it's reflected in the text [TS]

00:45:16   right and I think that's where the [TS]

00:45:18   difference comes in for me is that [TS]

00:45:19   inaction Cedric's death is very very [TS]

00:45:22   like casual and the way that Voldemort [TS]

00:45:24   killed him but it's not presented as [TS]

00:45:26   such in the text in the story whereas [TS]

00:45:28   when serious his death I feel like [TS]

00:45:30   there's something in the writing that [TS]

00:45:31   just doesn't convey to me it doesn't [TS]

00:45:34   have a good job of conveying anyhow [TS]

00:45:36   yes I think I think there's a there's a [TS]

00:45:38   festival issue here bring up the [TS]

00:45:40   festival's that a fire outside with red [TS]

00:45:43   I actually thought serious disappearing [TS]

00:45:44   i think i did read it again and again [TS]

00:45:46   like what just happened he can't have [TS]

00:45:49   gone but i think that was I think she's [TS]

00:45:51   chosen many different kinds of deaths I [TS]

00:45:52   think this is her way you know death is [TS]

00:45:54   something children have to face less so [TS]

00:45:56   in our society in our age but it's um [TS]

00:45:59   you know I've had people died with their [TS]

00:46:00   suddenly gone and they're gone abruptly [TS]

00:46:02   and there's a hole in your life [TS]

00:46:04   inexplicable inexplicable death just [TS]

00:46:06   right happens right it sucks and it [TS]

00:46:08   sucks and I thought she actually did a [TS]

00:46:10   great job of cheating she made someone [TS]

00:46:12   disappear in the book as if she'd cut [TS]

00:46:14   pages out of it and i think i agree i [TS]

00:46:16   think it was very intentional for me at [TS]

00:46:17   work because of that and then you have [TS]

00:46:19   is the next book when he sees the [TS]

00:46:20   festivals and suddenly become [TS]

00:46:22   she's lost someone where he was I guess [TS]

00:46:25   Cano he's he's never been able to see [TS]

00:46:27   the best roles with some explanation [TS]

00:46:29   even those parents who died in front of [TS]

00:46:31   him write that and Cedric had died while [TS]

00:46:33   she said right so you can see the [TS]

00:46:34   festival suddenly and Luna and the whole [TS]

00:46:36   thing that that I'm Alliance Scicluna [TS]

00:46:38   just slightly bizarre kid but then you [TS]

00:46:40   find her mother's quadfather's a little [TS]

00:46:42   cracked and how they've been able to [TS]

00:46:44   make the way the world so there's no [TS]

00:46:45   this eccentric death is that debt [TS]

00:46:47   there's a man I moody like I actually [TS]

00:46:50   felt the most to death in the books from [TS]

00:46:52   your mad movie and spoiler or another [TS]

00:46:55   room pyranose that's the only thing is [TS]

00:46:57   covered under the spoiler open check out [TS]

00:46:59   when I can't hear you the spoiler hoods [TS]

00:47:01   going haha but looping looping and I'd [TS]

00:47:05   gonna get married and then they die [TS]

00:47:06   I was like a tox I couldn't believe I [TS]

00:47:08   was like I finally tried but happiness [TS]

00:47:10   and then she'd buy it man i believe the [TS]

00:47:12   same thing like we lost him it's like [TS]

00:47:14   we're all we got to hit you know [TS]

00:47:16   yeah but this was this huge battle and [TS]

00:47:18   suddenly he's gone i felt like that was [TS]

00:47:20   not handled well they made an emotional [TS]

00:47:21   attachment to movie but it wasn't him it [TS]

00:47:23   was the you know the guy you not even [TS]

00:47:26   getting positive and then we rarely [TS]

00:47:28   really saw we have a lot of connection [TS]

00:47:30   with movie after that Anthony spot [TS]

00:47:32   I you know it occurred to me suddenly [TS]

00:47:33   when I was thinking about series is that [TS]

00:47:35   that I'm so he dies he sort of stumbles [TS]

00:47:37   back through the like the veo que [TS]

00:47:39   archway and a cursory it's only [TS]

00:47:42   encourage me when we were talking about [TS]

00:47:43   this that's kind of a dark reflection of [TS]

00:47:45   in the first book When Harry the mirror [TS]

00:47:48   of erised said oh yeah where Harry [TS]

00:47:50   series seasons parents and it's kind of [TS]

00:47:52   like a dark you know that the veil was [TS]

00:47:54   kind of like the dark version of that [TS]

00:47:55   which is instead of sort of bringing [TS]

00:47:57   something back to take something away [TS]

00:47:58   and leave me there and we need to do [TS]

00:48:00   simulations haha we can meet up with the [TS]

00:48:03   flip side of that to which is that the [TS]

00:48:04   number of people who come back from the [TS]

00:48:06   dead like given how many deaths are [TS]

00:48:08   closed people the styles of death it's [TS]

00:48:10   like you have all the ghosts then you [TS]

00:48:12   can takes book after book before you [TS]

00:48:13   understand what the ghost actually mean [TS]

00:48:15   in her universe you have Mary's parent's [TS]

00:48:17   come back so often they'll get frequent [TS]

00:48:19   flyer from the afterlife tickets because [TS]

00:48:21   it's like well but they're like their [TS]

00:48:23   recordings though right which is sorta [TS]

00:48:25   they seem to have some intentionality [TS]

00:48:27   until the final thing when he has the [TS]

00:48:28   the [TS]

00:48:30   what we call it the resurrection stone [TS]

00:48:33   right well the whole idea though is I i [TS]

00:48:35   think is that they're you in the [TS]

00:48:37   wizarding world they're like shards of [TS]

00:48:39   pottery shards of pride your souls just [TS]

00:48:41   like with a Baltimore a and so you leave [TS]

00:48:44   a little imprint behind so it is a piece [TS]

00:48:46   of them that's left but it's not good i [TS]

00:48:49   am given credit give her credit though [TS]

00:48:52   for not falling to the temptation of you [TS]

00:48:54   know basically like the comic book [TS]

00:48:56   approach of nobody's ever really dead in [TS]

00:49:00   a world which is which is Magic they're [TS]

00:49:02   dead magic rights they're dead they're [TS]

00:49:03   dead but that might not just like with a [TS]

00:49:05   joss whedon series to tie it into last [TS]

00:49:07   week's podcast once they're dead just [TS]

00:49:09   means you don't see him again but [TS]

00:49:10   they're still like ya good but i like [TS]

00:49:12   that because there's not a it's it feels [TS]

00:49:15   like a cheap right whenever you know [TS]

00:49:16   nobody ever really dies in comic books [TS]

00:49:18   right everybody always comes back [TS]

00:49:20   it really isn't a magnum p.i when that [TS]

00:49:22   guy was blown up in the car came back [TS]

00:49:23   and no no yes yes I didn't know we were [TS]

00:49:26   gonna get to add in the middle of this [TS]

00:49:28   but did you see did you see the sunrise [TS]

00:49:30   at the pali lookout this morning boom [TS]

00:49:33   and bags friend dies and then they bring [TS]

00:49:35   him back and he's like an evil twin [TS]

00:49:36   Russian sleeper agent you know exactly [TS]

00:49:38   what the hell was that that's the best [TS]

00:49:40   episode of magnum p.i when the guy dies [TS]

00:49:42   because it's like real thanks i didn't [TS]

00:49:44   know we'd be talking about Megan don't [TS]

00:49:46   like it you have to conduct his magnum [TS]

00:49:48   p.i and no wait a second factor hearing [TS]

00:49:50   platter what is what magnum p.i in and [TS]

00:49:53   harry potter have in common now we know [TS]

00:49:55   it's a it's no way no nomination there [TS]

00:49:58   she doesn't do cheap Chesney the cheap [TS]

00:49:59   shot doesn't do that it was I mean yeah [TS]

00:50:01   you would in a world that this [TS]

00:50:03   promulgated so heavily on magic right it [TS]

00:50:05   would have been easier to say oh yeah we [TS]

00:50:07   just magic them back from the dead [TS]

00:50:08   probably good go about your business but [TS]

00:50:10   he never she never succumbs to that [TS]

00:50:12   which I I appreciate the loot was I [TS]

00:50:15   think either the it's we talked about [TS]

00:50:17   this briefly actually two tied into [TS]

00:50:18   another early podcast in the Doctor Who [TS]

00:50:20   podcast earlier where you were the with [TS]

00:50:23   Rory again spoiler alright dying many [TS]

00:50:26   times [TS]

00:50:27   yeah it's like after all it loses the [TS]

00:50:29   impact right B and get a nice moment [TS]

00:50:31   where it's like oh god this is you know [TS]

00:50:33   death its mortality it's all this stuff [TS]

00:50:35   wrapped up in one and then they're like [TS]

00:50:37   I yeah but we're just kidding about that [TS]

00:50:39   you know well what will give them some [TS]

00:50:40   more thread to play himself out [TS]

00:50:42   come again and Brad together again [TS]

00:50:44   giving back again giving very close to [TS]

00:50:46   call world [TS]

00:50:48   Wow Glenn Glenn you are going to retire [TS]

00:50:51   as the champion of the obscure earnest [TS]

00:50:52   online this podcast I'm the distiller [TS]

00:50:55   for this point [TS]

00:50:56   oh that's that's true that's true but if [TS]

00:50:58   you're going to start talking about [TS]

00:51:00   right wing politics so a little work and [TS]

00:51:03   it's like my beer that Rolen alright oh [TS]

00:51:05   uh well okay so what I'll be evil glare [TS]

00:51:08   right evil clan well or core or Glenn [TS]

00:51:11   didn't I might be consistent with the [TS]

00:51:14   opposite Glenn we should do an episode [TS]

00:51:16   were all play parallel universe like [TS]

00:51:18   Star Trek near Mary universe versions of [TS]

00:51:20   ourselves [TS]

00:51:21   welcome to ten separated world that's [TS]

00:51:23   right because there will be supplements [TS]

00:51:25   in that parallel universes podcast [TS]

00:51:27   that's what I think I'll be clean-shaven [TS]

00:51:28   in that unit that will be on not that [TS]

00:51:31   would be the comparable oh there you are [TS]

00:51:36   not very good April Fool's ride will be [TS]

00:51:38   80 years old so yeah so what's up so [TS]

00:51:41   what's your room [TS]

00:51:42   what's your favorite of the of the Harry [TS]

00:51:44   Potter books 3 without a doubt I hold [TS]

00:51:47   that to this time and that one is for [TS]

00:51:49   those who reserved azkaban oh yeah which [TS]

00:51:52   introduced a serious but yes I I serious [TS]

00:51:55   is probably one of my favorite [TS]

00:51:56   characters despite the relatively little [TS]

00:51:57   screen time he gets overall but that [TS]

00:51:59   that book is just crafted so well [TS]

00:52:02   because it's the first hint that we get [TS]

00:52:03   the ball in this world is you know there [TS]

00:52:06   are still dark and deep things in this [TS]

00:52:08   world besides besides Baltimore you know [TS]

00:52:10   trying to poke his head up from the [TS]

00:52:11   surface there are still like horrible [TS]

00:52:13   things that are going on and then on top [TS]

00:52:15   of that you really start to get the [TS]

00:52:16   backstory behind Harry's parents death [TS]

00:52:18   and how that all occurred you're like [TS]

00:52:20   wow this is really awful to and [TS]

00:52:22   generally there are really awful things [TS]

00:52:24   happening in this otherwise hey pretty [TS]

00:52:27   magic things are you know you get that [TS]

00:52:30   you get that sort of dark feel [TS]

00:52:31   throughout the entire book rather than [TS]

00:52:33   in the last like five or six chapters as [TS]

00:52:36   you do with like chamber of secrets and [TS]

00:52:37   philosopher stone right sorcerer's stone [TS]

00:52:40   which everyone called when what about [TS]

00:52:43   you when it's a tough question i I'm not [TS]

00:52:46   sure I like any books is unreservedly [TS]

00:52:47   three was good I liked some parts of [TS]

00:52:49   order of the phoenix and I think [TS]

00:52:51   bookseven despite its flaws are some [TS]

00:52:53   terrific they're terrific parts of books [TS]

00:52:55   7i like so i'm not sure i had anyone [TS]

00:52:57   that was a favorite I i think there's a [TS]

00:53:00   scene that I love which is when [TS]

00:53:01   dumbledore comes back way he doesn't [TS]

00:53:03   come back no one comes back we get an [TS]

00:53:05   echo of Dumbledore I i think i have a [TS]

00:53:07   favorite scene like of all the books a [TS]

00:53:08   bit when they're in the thing that's not [TS]

00:53:10   quite a trigger Waterloo station or some [TS]

00:53:12   giant train station in London that to me [TS]

00:53:16   is I think the epitome how she could [TS]

00:53:18   write a scene that is unlike anything [TS]

00:53:20   else you know we didn't even talk about [TS]

00:53:23   Dumbledore's death when we talked about [TS]

00:53:24   deaths [TS]

00:53:25   it's still too fresh huh excuses to [TS]

00:53:28   represent that's why you know it [TS]

00:53:30   happened that will be one and it [TS]

00:53:32   happened again although he came back [TS]

00:53:33   right so what happened it's not about [TS]

00:53:34   anything was never in school afterwards [TS]

00:53:36   like he was really boring Gandalf the [TS]

00:53:39   Grey was awesome get off the white and [TS]

00:53:41   thumbs down [TS]

00:53:41   he's just doing his job please doll why [TS]

00:53:44   wizards john is Dalton great wizard know [TS]

00:53:46   it's all the chicks what can you say [TS]

00:53:47   that again very great Wizards he's got a [TS]

00:53:50   little edginess to him right it's kind [TS]

00:53:51   of funny he's got a sense of humor is a [TS]

00:53:53   little bit draggled what it's like I'm [TS]

00:53:54   Jesus hey how's it going was really [TS]

00:53:56   rather gasps the Reds fan picture that's [TS]

00:53:58   what I want to know [TS]

00:53:59   brown brown do disney brown right oh [TS]

00:54:01   you're right [TS]

00:54:02   yeah Wow Dan Moore and please tell me [TS]

00:54:06   how take a look at it well tell me about [TS]

00:54:08   harry potter tell me your favorite [TS]

00:54:10   favorite thing from Harry Potter book or [TS]

00:54:12   other thing if you want to be like [TS]

00:54:13   planning and avoid the question of [TS]

00:54:14   favorite book [TS]

00:54:15   I think I'm gonna have to go to spike it [TS]

00:54:18   getting knocked I think I'm gonna have [TS]

00:54:19   to go with four just because goblet of [TS]

00:54:21   fire just because you know that they [TS]

00:54:24   have to find it builds and it has that [TS]

00:54:26   great pivot point where everything [TS]

00:54:28   changes and to me that's when I really [TS]

00:54:30   you know got the feeling that the series [TS]

00:54:32   was something else was going to in a [TS]

00:54:35   different direction than I expected it [TS]

00:54:37   two and five [TS]

00:54:40   you know I think the problem with five [TS]

00:54:42   is there's a lot of this there's a lot [TS]

00:54:44   of time spent whinging as the British [TS]

00:54:46   would say with with the hairy dithering [TS]

00:54:49   about stuff and feeling better he has a [TS]

00:54:50   bad note book 5 is very good revise my [TS]

00:54:53   actual heading um and I would say six is [TS]

00:54:55   probably probably a close second [TS]

00:54:57   I think for me but I you know I I'm i [TS]

00:55:00   think i agree with Glenn to a certain [TS]

00:55:02   extent that there are I more fan of [TS]

00:55:03   scenes throughout the the series that i [TS]

00:55:05   am of any particular books [TS]

00:55:08   but I yeah I i don't know i and III [TS]

00:55:11   would actually agree with you [TS]

00:55:12   sorry friend that I i like the fourth [TS]

00:55:15   book the best mostly because of the end [TS]

00:55:17   mostly because of those last few scenes [TS]

00:55:19   where things really really turn and I [TS]

00:55:22   have a soft spot in my heart for the [TS]

00:55:23   fifth one even though you're right that [TS]

00:55:24   here is kind of a jerk for the entire [TS]

00:55:26   book it because the whole Dumbledore's [TS]

00:55:28   Army you know it's pretty it's just such [TS]

00:55:31   a great thing to see the kids finally [TS]

00:55:34   kind of come all the way out from under [TS]

00:55:36   the you know that they're sort of [TS]

00:55:38   skirting the rules up to that point and [TS]

00:55:40   in the fifth book they are a rebel force [TS]

00:55:43   and how great is that moment when that [TS]

00:55:45   when they're like we're gonna just do [TS]

00:55:47   this ourselves and you know what took [TS]

00:55:49   you so long but it i love that end of [TS]

00:55:51   four and then and then going into the [TS]

00:55:54   fifth book so what there's not there's a [TS]

00:55:55   political group called Dumbledore's Army [TS]

00:55:57   I said about this on NPR the other day [TS]

00:55:59   inspired by like taking their there is [TS]

00:56:01   sort of you know political leanings from [TS]

00:56:03   Harry Potter books which sounds now they [TS]

00:56:05   could join up with the job the job [TS]

00:56:07   it was really great Jedi and yeah New [TS]

00:56:09   Zealand in the UK [TS]

00:56:10   hey I have a question they ask questions [TS]

00:56:12   yes least appreciated creature like most [TS]

00:56:15   underappreciated creature or character i [TS]

00:56:18   have a few but i'm curious what people [TS]

00:56:19   felt were were both shall be treated [TS]

00:56:22   despite the potential outside your [TS]

00:56:24   specifically so something that we [TS]

00:56:26   something that we like this obscure or [TS]

00:56:28   something that we wish we had seen more [TS]

00:56:29   of your only like a character like I [TS]

00:56:31   mean there's no 5,000 named characters [TS]

00:56:34   in the books [TS]

00:56:34   surely there are some that that should [TS]

00:56:36   have gotten you know i'm thinking more [TS]

00:56:38   about like the be characters know that [TS]

00:56:40   the a character your wish had more [TS]

00:56:41   attention lavished on them i think so [TS]

00:56:43   because I've got a couple but I security [TS]

00:56:45   someone else takes like who do they want [TS]

00:56:46   to see more of it was shunted off to the [TS]

00:56:48   side of the books went on you're like [TS]

00:56:50   wait a minute they're actually they [TS]

00:56:51   should have got more you know Paige [TS]

00:56:52   times when that Kingsley shackle just [TS]

00:56:58   sounds like a badass in such a great [TS]

00:57:01   name great actor playing true it's funny [TS]

00:57:04   because i mean the the people who come [TS]

00:57:06   up off the top of my head are people who [TS]

00:57:08   already have decent amount of screen [TS]

00:57:10   time like I think about the twins [TS]

00:57:12   well I why would always enjoy and see [TS]

00:57:15   more intense yeah exactly [TS]

00:57:17   they're just so much fun and then you [TS]

00:57:18   get the scene in the [TS]

00:57:19   end of four where Harry gives Fred and [TS]

00:57:22   George prize money is like gonna make a [TS]

00:57:23   go make a thing go go brokenhearted SE [TS]

00:57:27   exactly one which one loses here and [TS]

00:57:30   you're sure i just love to be they [TS]

00:57:33   started quick about now you can tell us [TS]

00:57:35   apart yeah but like I mean that so it's [TS]

00:57:38   so perfect in terms of the way that they [TS]

00:57:39   capturing the right you're reminded me [TS]

00:57:42   of God you might have another spoiler we [TS]

00:57:45   were talking about media but like I [TS]

00:57:47   Xander in season 7 when something really [TS]

00:57:50   terrible happens to him I don't want to [TS]

00:57:51   be a lot i won't give up I won't give up [TS]

00:57:53   with a spoiler but he has it like you [TS]

00:57:55   know he takes it the way that you think [TS]

00:57:57   he would which is you know with a wry [TS]

00:58:00   quips and a well let's just keep going [TS]

00:58:02   you know what's not fixated on this and [TS]

00:58:04   I always loved in I just I don't know I [TS]

00:58:06   really enjoyed that they it's a terrible [TS]

00:58:09   thing to happen but they take it well [TS]

00:58:11   may know it was like sort of hidden in [TS]

00:58:12   the defense of something good [TS]

00:58:14   they're just such a yeah they're they're [TS]

00:58:15   great characters and that they they seem [TS]

00:58:18   to know so much about they know so much [TS]

00:58:20   about hogwarts and they know so much [TS]

00:58:21   like they have amassed this whole little [TS]

00:58:24   crowded that it's always the older I [TS]

00:58:26   mean there's what two or three general [TS]

00:58:28   or two or three levels up from the main [TS]

00:58:31   gas right yeah something like that so [TS]

00:58:33   it's it's always curious too kind of [TS]

00:58:34   like alright these people are slightly [TS]

00:58:37   older I would love to know what's going [TS]

00:58:38   on in their circle of friends and with [TS]

00:58:40   you know pre pre drama I don't know and [TS]

00:58:44   then remiss of is a character but I mean [TS]

00:58:47   Remus gets a fair amount of screen time [TS]

00:58:49   so I guess I mean he gets most of the [TS]

00:58:51   third book and then a lot in the fifth [TS]

00:58:54   and a lot like we're soon after the [TS]

00:58:56   third book we sort of missing usual [TS]

00:58:57   Jason well because she treats I mean she [TS]

00:59:00   has such an interesting concept for [TS]

00:59:02   werewolves and it's and the idea of like [TS]

00:59:05   outcasts since this Vermin outcasts of [TS]

00:59:07   society is fairly normal but in terms of [TS]

00:59:08   the way that they're treated in this [TS]

00:59:11   Wizarding society and I don't know and [TS]

00:59:13   there's there's just so much there that [TS]

00:59:15   I wish had been explored but I don't [TS]

00:59:18   necessarily like if i had to choose [TS]

00:59:20   somebody to like right era to cheer for [TS]

00:59:23   being like yes this person should get [TS]

00:59:25   more screentime like that's more I think [TS]

00:59:27   personal than a overall this character [TS]

00:59:29   was under [TS]

00:59:30   represented should Wedge Antilles yeah [TS]

00:59:33   he shouldn't shouldn't shouldn't [TS]

00:59:35   Dumbledore have an assistant who is like [TS]

00:59:37   a secretary who like cards calendar and [TS]

00:59:39   stuff but he has a gargoyle why would he [TS]

00:59:41   need a secretary I don't know I'll [TS]

00:59:43   sherbert ice I want to know more i want [TS]

00:59:45   to see that character uh I want to know [TS]

00:59:47   more about the guy who runs who drives [TS]

00:59:49   the Hogwarts Express I think we didn't [TS]

00:59:51   really learn about him and there's a [TS]

00:59:53   whole short secretary bad guy behind the [TS]

00:59:55   desk at Gringotts the Goblin behind the [TS]

00:59:57   decimal Lincoln's I don't know what his [TS]

00:59:59   life [TS]

00:59:59   life [TS]

01:00:00   alright and love dark we need him in the [TS]

01:00:02   seventh book and and the the guy who [TS]

01:00:06   sells the the the brooms and how he [TS]

01:00:09   picks his brooms I'd like to know more [TS]

01:00:10   about him [TS]

01:00:12   I you know that but more I I don't know [TS]

01:00:16   I i think there's so many little things [TS]

01:00:18   that I I that are so so weird about the [TS]

01:00:21   the series and you know I honestly don't [TS]

01:00:23   know I kinda like I kind of didn't like [TS]

01:00:25   talks to begin with and i ended up [TS]

01:00:26   actually liking a lot [TS]

01:00:28   yeah and feeling like we didn't really [TS]

01:00:30   get to see a lot of that kind of punk [TS]

01:00:31   rock kind was it just me or did I kept [TS]

01:00:33   thinking that something was about to [TS]

01:00:34   brew between thompson Harry like it felt [TS]

01:00:37   like their intimations of that and then [TS]

01:00:39   it sort of disappeared like I think that [TS]

01:00:40   maybe just maybe reading between the [TS]

01:00:42   lines but you know she's older but not [TS]

01:00:44   that much older Harry's got all this [TS]

01:00:45   deep responsibility I thought is you [TS]

01:00:47   going to seek comfort in the arms of the [TS]

01:00:48   older more experienced or but like she [TS]

01:00:51   already seems I mean she and Lupin I [TS]

01:00:53   felt like pretty early on at Estrella [TS]

01:00:55   stablished start chemistry between Mary [TS]

01:00:57   gives more of an older sister vibe [TS]

01:00:59   between her and Harry I could do with [TS]

01:01:01   less dhabi valve that's what I like that [TS]

01:01:03   stuff so Jar Jar and Bobby I others but [TS]

01:01:06   that's always good i think of [TS]

01:01:08   yeah I should have a baby should have a [TS]

01:01:10   talk show Charles County I don't do a [TS]

01:01:13   lot of I don't do a lot of ways to do [TS]

01:01:15   sensation what are you doing that on [TS]

01:01:17   youtube you get a billionaire I don't I [TS]

01:01:19   don't do a lot of voices when i'm [TS]

01:01:20   reading to my kids but I do too I do [TS]

01:01:22   Dhabi and I do [TS]

01:01:23   Voldemort so just to scare my kids and [TS]

01:01:26   also to make my kids I guess laughs or [TS]

01:01:28   creating you something that we asked avi [TS]

01:01:30   oh yes right i mean because he's just [TS]

01:01:33   annoying and I i got to get through it [TS]

01:01:34   so I do a voice with my two characters [TS]

01:01:37   to appreciate it luna and level and I [TS]

01:01:39   know that's up there because you have a [TS]

01:01:40   little time but I was great but never [TS]

01:01:42   gets a lot as I might be like you know [TS]

01:01:44   it is it's almost like you're watching [TS]

01:01:46   the foreign characters in the background [TS]

01:01:48   levels growing up the tree and [TS]

01:01:49   occasionally comes the foreground you [TS]

01:01:51   like holy Neville is a great trapdoor [TS]

01:01:52   character he looks like the comic relief [TS]

01:01:55   and then you find out [TS]

01:01:56   no his parents the reason he lives with [TS]

01:01:59   his grandmother or whatever is because [TS]

01:02:00   his parents were killed by Voldemort [TS]

01:02:02   because they were on the right side and [TS]

01:02:04   for the wrong side not even killed [TS]

01:02:07   I their brains have been concealing [TS]

01:02:09   addled so there's still a lot of right [TS]

01:02:11   rice destroy what and i will make a [TS]

01:02:13   strawberry milk for him as as one of the [TS]

01:02:15   best casting decisions decisions to be I [TS]

01:02:18   feel like that they got there was no way [TS]

01:02:20   for them to predicted that that that kid [TS]

01:02:22   would grow up that way but man like he [TS]

01:02:23   did definitely grew up from looking like [TS]

01:02:25   Goofy's I didn't to the point where i [TS]

01:02:27   watched the last film was like holy crap [TS]

01:02:28   that Neville what he stands up and he [TS]

01:02:30   has very little screen time in part one [TS]

01:02:33   of the movie seven but there's a part of [TS]

01:02:35   the train would be just as it says what [TS]

01:02:37   do you want losers what he's facing them [TS]

01:02:38   Death Eaters middle of everything you're [TS]

01:02:40   like that is the moment that is the they [TS]

01:02:42   managed concerning that way into one [TS]

01:02:44   line into the movie [TS]

01:02:45   well it's wonderful we find out and what [TS]

01:02:46   book six books seven that Neville was [TS]

01:02:49   almost harry potter it came down those [TS]

01:02:51   two boys it's like I've already asthma [TS]

01:02:53   you think that couldn't have worked out [TS]

01:02:54   and then she makes a good case that he [TS]

01:02:56   could have that he could have stepped up [TS]

01:02:57   to i want to watch Neville Longbottom in [TS]

01:03:00   the chamber of secrets could have done [TS]

01:03:01   in four books and how many all histories [TS]

01:03:04   are there of that round is probably as a [TS]

01:03:05   felon i'm sure i have over there are [TS]

01:03:08   many that was after my time but it would [TS]

01:03:10   have taken five staff ibooks rent [TS]

01:03:12   because his bottom is too long [TS]

01:03:14   that was the name of our out the year [TS]

01:03:18   that our frisbee at the season that our [TS]

01:03:20   frisbee teams all had to have harry [TS]

01:03:23   potter theme names will be named haha [TS]

01:03:26   can go long buttons [TS]

01:03:27   ok wow you know yeah that's great team [TS]

01:03:30   you know I I thought we could men on [TS]

01:03:32   were snowed in my joke and I heard that [TS]

01:03:34   a broad quidditch which by the way is as [TS]

01:03:38   somebody who is a sports fan which makes [TS]

01:03:41   no sense not open do they play it though [TS]

01:03:43   I have pictures i know people run around [TS]

01:03:45   muggles run around with brooms between [TS]

01:03:47   their legs and say they're playing [TS]

01:03:48   Quidditch but no to think the thing that [TS]

01:03:50   makes no sense is that the point total [TS]

01:03:51   value of the snitch is so much greater [TS]

01:03:53   than the going value of the goals that [TS]

01:03:55   there's almost no point actually playing [TS]

01:03:57   the the the goal based game because of [TS]

01:04:00   the massive it's like 10 times as much [TS]

01:04:02   to get the Stanton don't they say that [TS]

01:04:04   there's like one exam one or two [TS]

01:04:06   examples ever wear like somebody had one [TS]

01:04:08   without getting the snitch or something [TS]

01:04:09   I think that's what it turns out when it [TS]

01:04:11   turns out that the goals of the [TS]

01:04:13   tiebreaker because in reading at a [TS]

01:04:15   second time what I realized is her her a [TS]

01:04:18   way to address this huge flaw in [TS]

01:04:20   Quidditch is to say that if that its [TS]

01:04:23   total points [TS]

01:04:24   that that you end up with its not record [TS]

01:04:26   or it's a tiebreaker for record as total [TS]

01:04:29   points so essentially if you've got the [TS]

01:04:31   same record of somebody else because [TS]

01:04:32   you've got the same number of stitches [TS]

01:04:33   then whoever has the most goals will be [TS]

01:04:37   the winner of that of the cup or [TS]

01:04:39   whatever it is but it's such a mean it's [TS]

01:04:41   just exhausting seeing you know because [TS]

01:04:43   the game could be over one minute into [TS]

01:04:44   it and there's no sport devices the game [TS]

01:04:47   could be over it's just I just I just [TS]

01:04:49   have to say for a year or two ago I what [TS]

01:04:52   I want I was walking on boston common [TS]

01:04:54   and I looked over and saw some local [TS]

01:04:58   college teams playing Quidditch only and [TS]

01:05:00   I just stood there with my mouth down [TS]

01:05:01   for a while and my favorite part of the [TS]

01:05:04   entire thing is that in order to [TS]

01:05:05   replicate the Golden Snitch there's just [TS]

01:05:08   a guy dressed in yellow and he just [TS]

01:05:10   looked like he was running all around [TS]

01:05:11   boston common so he's like disappear [TS]

01:05:14   over a hill like well off the field and [TS]

01:05:16   then like every like five minutes 5 10 [TS]

01:05:17   minutes or so you'd like to come back to [TS]

01:05:19   the field like oh yeah I'm it disappear [TS]

01:05:21   again it's lawyer has that job my god no [TS]

01:05:24   that's not that's some some [TS]

01:05:25   cross-country runner or somebody right [TS]

01:05:27   somebody exactly right exactly will be [TS]

01:05:29   the atom banks of the quickest that's [TS]

01:05:32   right we'll get we'll get our solid Adam [TS]

01:05:34   to be our Golden Snitch Lee tanned [TS]

01:05:36   blonde wow alright so we like Harry [TS]

01:05:40   Potter them [TS]

01:05:41   yeah I'm not never well you know we can [TS]

01:05:43   actually talk about a movie as a home's [TS]

01:05:45   out it the movie the movie by the way [TS]

01:05:46   it's a lot of camping there's some great [TS]

01:05:48   action scenes it's a lot of camping when [TS]

01:05:51   I left I heard great but every other [TS]

01:05:53   person theaters like man I didn't [TS]

01:05:55   realize we're going to rei sponsor the [TS]

01:05:56   movie or that was a great camping film I [TS]

01:05:58   wonder with what the next will be about [TS]

01:06:00   you know like booze or other sucks i [TS]

01:06:02   will say harry potter and the luge of [TS]

01:06:05   doom [TS]

01:06:07   I'll say that it's a great it's a great [TS]

01:06:09   character study film there's some really [TS]

01:06:11   nice moments between the trio there's [TS]

01:06:12   some really nice ones between the [TS]

01:06:14   characters and it definitely stands [TS]

01:06:17   well it's better than most of the other [TS]

01:06:20   movies although i am mad that now i have [TS]

01:06:22   to wait six months to find out you know [TS]

01:06:24   to see part two you i should point out [TS]

01:06:27   they did the camping thing the book the [TS]

01:06:28   camping sort of uniformly dreary dreary [TS]

01:06:30   as the plant plot is advanced you get [TS]

01:06:32   the plot they did do the senate [TS]

01:06:34   democratic political cinematographic [TS]

01:06:36   being [TS]

01:06:38   in the film which is they found the [TS]

01:06:39   loveliest craziest places in Britain to [TS]

01:06:43   shoot the camping scene so I'm like my [TS]

01:06:44   gosh if the words if the action is [TS]

01:06:46   boring or slow at least you're looking [TS]

01:06:49   at these cute crazy i don't think that [TS]

01:06:51   don't look real but are clearly real [TS]

01:06:53   scenery which is also why it's funny [TS]

01:06:56   that they're in modern-day clothing [TS]

01:06:57   hiking across this giant cliffs maybe [TS]

01:06:59   i'll just wait six months and then [TS]

01:07:00   they'll probably release part 1 i've [TS]

01:07:02   been watching both on the same day it's [TS]

01:07:03   entirely likely that's what i was doing [TS]

01:07:05   the tour [TS]

01:07:06   excuse me tour it oh but I like on a [TS]

01:07:10   movie yeah it's good to go to the movies [TS]

01:07:12   big giant scenes would be better on big [TS]

01:07:15   screen come on it's cool [TS]

01:07:16   sure sure alright so that's your that's [TS]

01:07:19   your quick removal review for for harry [TS]

01:07:22   potter six-and-a-half it's the camera [TS]

01:07:25   and the campsite camping you know [TS]

01:07:26   anything with outbreaks of death you do [TS]

01:07:28   the camping because you want your [TS]

01:07:29   characters have have had their setback [TS]

01:07:31   and now they're in the will and we just [TS]

01:07:32   talked about camping isn't it it's in [TS]

01:07:34   the wilderness there there there they [TS]

01:07:36   have nowhere else to go they have to [TS]

01:07:37   leave civilization before they reenter [TS]

01:07:39   it i mean that is I mean that does [TS]

01:07:41   happen a lot i I just you know it is a [TS]

01:07:44   lot to hang a movie around because then [TS]

01:07:46   they don't come back until the next one [TS]

01:07:48   is there a cliffhanger there is ok well [TS]

01:07:51   at least there's that would be bad if [TS]

01:07:54   they just you know goodnight Ron [TS]

01:07:55   goodnight Harry and they turn off the [TS]

01:07:57   Coleman lantern too messy and if they [TS]

01:07:59   sort of slowly dolly out that's right [TS]

01:08:01   she comes [TS]

01:08:02   maybe they end it they ended on a good [TS]

01:08:05   note although i would I wish they would [TS]

01:08:07   have ended one scene earlier because i [TS]

01:08:09   think the cliffhanger that they ended on [TS]

01:08:12   felt very kind of shoehorned in whereas [TS]

01:08:15   the right the prior scene reminds me to [TS]

01:08:17   the end of fellowship where you know [TS]

01:08:19   Alexander it's where it's where it's [TS]

01:08:21   very trying like they're very oh it's [TS]

01:08:23   great it's a great and zine and this one [TS]

01:08:26   nearly matched up to it and it got me to [TS]

01:08:28   respect a character that I was very [TS]

01:08:30   gonna like is about and I like okay this [TS]

01:08:33   could be a great this is the end of the [TS]

01:08:34   movie right there the credits right and [TS]

01:08:35   then no we flipped this like intercut [TS]

01:08:38   scene of Oh things are bad and I'm like [TS]

01:08:41   now couldn't you just left the things [TS]

01:08:43   are bad to part two we know things are [TS]

01:08:45   bad [TS]

01:08:45   did you notice they did one thing in the [TS]

01:08:47   movie that i thought was insignificant [TS]

01:08:48   hand over the book actually used [TS]

01:08:50   with visual medium of film storytelling [TS]

01:08:53   to do something well not just the shadow [TS]

01:08:54   puppet thing that was incredible tale [TS]

01:08:57   that story of the three brothers is a [TS]

01:08:59   big as the most gorgeous things it's [TS]

01:09:02   like the beginning of the cowboy way to [TS]

01:09:04   there's a the tale of the Golden Army is [TS]

01:09:07   told in sort of this stick figure thing [TS]

01:09:09   and it's also equally gorgeous might [TS]

01:09:11   have been the same people who did it but [TS]

01:09:13   they did in the in this shadow puppet [TS]

01:09:15   thing they show the intron of [TS]

01:09:18   invisibility that and Harry and his [TS]

01:09:20   friends clearly recognize that they have [TS]

01:09:22   it which in the books you don't get that [TS]

01:09:24   that's part of the same thing it's like [TS]

01:09:25   a shroud of invisibility the book you [TS]

01:09:27   don't find out later that has a [TS]

01:09:29   relationship to what Harry inherited and [TS]

01:09:32   it's just even with like the texture of [TS]

01:09:33   the fabric in the in the shadow puppetry [TS]

01:09:36   you can tell that specifically Aires [TS]

01:09:38   crowd automatically well and the [TS]

01:09:40   reaction shots when you cut back to them [TS]

01:09:43   yes i would say the the animation on the [TS]

01:09:45   whole which is the scene where they're [TS]

01:09:47   talking about the deathly hallows what [TS]

01:09:49   they are [TS]

01:09:49   it reminds me of who's the artist who [TS]

01:09:52   did that who does the Don Quixote [TS]

01:09:54   painting [TS]

01:09:54   why don't you mean yeah it also wasn't [TS]

01:09:57   it that's it is because so the ones you [TS]

01:09:59   think of this little stick figure yeah [TS]

01:10:01   it was right [TS]

01:10:02   that's what it that's what it reminds me [TS]

01:10:03   of a hundred percent is it that the very [TS]

01:10:05   like thin out it's absolutely beautiful [TS]

01:10:08   it's the highlight of the movie without [TS]

01:10:09   a doubt [TS]

01:10:10   ok so we've gone from Picasso to magnum [TS]

01:10:13   p.i and back now yes this is everyone [TS]

01:10:16   only pocket there's your tagline the [TS]

01:10:17   only party ask that covers magnum p.i [TS]

01:10:19   picasso and harry potter exactly that's [TS]

01:10:22   what we're here for [TS]

01:10:24   that's why people listen to people [TS]

01:10:25   listen yes that's why people listen I [TS]

01:10:27   didn't go to college there for years to [TS]

01:10:30   not be able to make obscure references [TS]

01:10:31   in a podcast in 2010 and that's why you [TS]

01:10:34   said exegesis earlier blessing [TS]

01:10:38   yeah that's exactly nose-up ones I'm [TS]

01:10:41   well so that we've come to the end of [TS]

01:10:44   our time together now friends [TS]

01:10:45   well until until next time when we'll [TS]

01:10:48   have another very exciting podcast who [TS]

01:10:51   knows what that will be but until that [TS]

01:10:53   time I would like to thank all our [TS]
