17: We`re Going to Need Some More Christmas Movies, I Guess

00:00:00   the following podcast is about a movie [TS]

00:00:01   that's rated R as a result it does [TS]

00:00:04   include some salty language if your ears [TS]

00:00:07   are sensitive or if the ears of those [TS]

00:00:09   around your sensitive please use caution [TS]

00:00:11   while listening to this episode [TS]

00:00:13   incomparable podcast number 74 December [TS]

00:00:25   from the penthouse high atop to tell me [TS]

00:00:29   power [TS]

00:00:30   it's the uncomfortable podcast i am your [TS]

00:00:33   host Jason snow we are joined today by [TS]

00:00:36   Steve let's hello Steve [TS]

00:00:39   hellooo and Dan Morgan I like to think [TS]

00:00:42   of myself as the the john mcclain to [TS]

00:00:45   your Hans Gruber if you are huh [TS]

00:00:47   oh do you now and then who steve is he [TS]

00:00:49   like samuel l jackson from die hard with [TS]

00:00:51   a vengeance [TS]

00:00:52   I a magical veljohnson and don't forget [TS]

00:00:54   it all right he's yeah and playing [TS]

00:00:56   playing the part of Argyll trapped in [TS]

00:00:59   the basement inmate parking garage is [TS]

00:01:01   greg Moss who says he'll join us but is [TS]

00:01:05   out buying a Christmas tree now just [TS]

00:01:08   something appropriate [TS]

00:01:09   that's right there's a there's a [TS]

00:01:11   Christmas tree and diehard so the topic [TS]

00:01:13   today if you haven't guessed already is [TS]

00:01:16   the classic heartwarming holiday film [TS]

00:01:20   diehard from 1988 starring bruce willis [TS]

00:01:24   znowu you maybe you may be saying how in [TS]

00:01:29   the world is diehard up a christmas [TS]

00:01:31   movie and in fact I was taken aback on [TS]

00:01:33   Twitter the other week when Dan more'n [TS]

00:01:36   declared boldly that die hard is the [TS]

00:01:41   greatest christmas movie of all time [TS]

00:01:45   dan explain yourself oh well i mean [TS]

00:01:48   first of all I mean obviously since [TS]

00:01:51   diehard takes place at Christmas that's [TS]

00:01:53   what gives it it's Christmas flavor but [TS]

00:01:55   it's not just like a a backdrop like oh [TS]

00:01:56   yeah Christmas sort of part of it i mean [TS]

00:02:00   Christmas plays a pretty a pretty [TS]

00:02:01   crucial role in this entire plot not [TS]

00:02:04   only from the premise but also you know [TS]

00:02:07   the the very resolution in fact the [TS]

00:02:09   climax of the whole film is due to to [TS]

00:02:11   wrapping materials so you know i think i [TS]

00:02:14   think it is intrinsically a Christmas [TS]

00:02:16   movie and some people make my point to [TS]

00:02:18   you know tape it might add [TS]

00:02:20   yes it is some wonderful Christmas only [TS]

00:02:23   wrapping materials known as take ya to [TS]

00:02:26   help is available at the time I believe [TS]

00:02:28   it is christmas themed tape it does say [TS]

00:02:30   Christmas greetings or something on it [TS]

00:02:32   is every kindness [TS]

00:02:33   I'm just saying but you know nonetheless [TS]

00:02:35   yeah but you don't have to like wrapping [TS]

00:02:37   tape sit [TS]

00:02:38   around come on come on ok so so let's [TS]

00:02:40   start this from the beginning John [TS]

00:02:41   McClane New York cop he's a cop on the [TS]

00:02:44   edge and he's flying he's flying in to [TS]

00:02:48   LAX with his with his gun on his person [TS]

00:02:51   in order to see his estranged wife who [TS]

00:02:57   is now going by her maiden name and [TS]

00:03:01   range due to his own failings and [TS]

00:03:04   rightly rise key right that that she got [TS]

00:03:07   this great job offer and he was [TS]

00:03:08   unsupportive and and so and so she took [TS]

00:03:12   the job and brought the kids and came to [TS]

00:03:15   LA and he would stay back in New York [TS]

00:03:17   what I think is interesting is that [TS]

00:03:20   Holly his wife played by bonnie bedelia [TS]

00:03:24   is a little surprised to see him which I [TS]

00:03:29   never read quite understood how she was [TS]

00:03:30   surprised to see him and yet apparently [TS]

00:03:33   mr. Takagi her boss had sent a limousine [TS]

00:03:36   to pick up his his VP's estranged [TS]

00:03:40   husband location is covered [TS]

00:03:43   yes she knows he's coming but like she [TS]

00:03:45   doesn't expect him to come to the party [TS]

00:03:46   the party I think takagi basically [TS]

00:03:48   interception like hearing he's going to [TS]

00:03:50   be in town [TS]

00:03:51   it's like oh I'll send a limo bring him [TS]

00:03:53   to the party but it is true that mr. [TS]

00:03:54   Hogg is sort of like mr. kind of [TS]

00:03:57   romantic setup guy where he's like oh [TS]

00:03:59   I'll said I'll send a limousine you see [TS]

00:04:01   where that gets I mean I really I'll [TS]

00:04:03   about you know through about the first [TS]

00:04:06   15 minutes [TS]

00:04:07   this could be a romantic comedy right [TS]

00:04:10   you know there's there's sort of a pivot [TS]

00:04:12   point there at one point [TS]

00:04:13   well there-there is the then there's the [TS]

00:04:15   scene where we see Alan Rickman as hot [TS]

00:04:18   grouper and then it's not a it's what i [TS]

00:04:21   mean i want to point out that that I [TS]

00:04:23   think one of the things that makes that [TS]

00:04:24   hard such a great movie and this is just [TS]

00:04:25   you know an overall thing is that it has [TS]

00:04:27   got a super-tight script like it's one [TS]

00:04:30   of those scripts that sort of perfectly [TS]

00:04:32   follows that whole pattern of like he be [TS]

00:04:34   here when you're your beats come like [TS]

00:04:36   because really like 15-minute mark rolls [TS]

00:04:38   around and that's the first time you see [TS]

00:04:40   you like mud the truck that like all the [TS]

00:04:43   villains are coming in like driving down [TS]

00:04:44   the street and everything in it is like [TS]

00:04:47   really paste and really [TS]

00:04:51   you know really tight there's a there's [TS]

00:04:52   an economy all the stuff that you need [TS]

00:04:54   to know that it's like set up in the [TS]

00:04:55   first 15 minutes [TS]

00:04:57   things are alluded to ahead of time like [TS]

00:04:59   there's there's an economy in the script [TS]

00:05:02   of everything that you need to know is [TS]

00:05:05   mentioned at some point and so there's [TS]

00:05:09   not a lot of like that came out of left [TS]

00:05:10   field or more stuff like that there [TS]

00:05:12   there's a lot of a lot of setup for it [TS]

00:05:14   and it's really well done that this [TS]

00:05:16   there's not a lot of extraneous material [TS]

00:05:18   like that whole long speech i just gave [TS]

00:05:19   which was full of extraneous material [TS]

00:05:21   and yes it's a it's not a short film for [TS]

00:05:24   all of that but it feels like it goes by [TS]

00:05:26   darn fast [TS]

00:05:27   oh yeah don't worry about two hours and [TS]

00:05:29   fifteen or something yeah it's about two [TS]

00:05:31   and a quarter i was watching it with my [TS]

00:05:32   I actually convince my parents to watch [TS]

00:05:34   it the other night which is kind of [TS]

00:05:36   interesting sort of coup but I you know [TS]

00:05:38   we we want about an hour of it while my [TS]

00:05:40   mother was decorating the Christmas tree [TS]

00:05:42   and then after dinner we're going back [TS]

00:05:44   to call how much is left like like half [TS]

00:05:46   an hour 45 minutes like actually like an [TS]

00:05:48   hour and a quarter left like really like [TS]

00:05:51   what we only just got to like this point [TS]

00:05:53   but one of the things that I find funny [TS]

00:05:54   about this movie is that there are these [TS]

00:05:56   strange characters that are our have a [TS]

00:06:00   small part to play and uh i think in a [TS]

00:06:04   lot of modern movies especially action [TS]

00:06:06   movies first off you would see the [TS]

00:06:08   villain even earlier but you would also [TS]

00:06:11   not have these characters that kind of [TS]

00:06:13   pop in and then pop away again and I'm [TS]

00:06:16   thinking particularly about there's Al [TS]

00:06:20   the the sergeant who doesn't even show [TS]

00:06:23   up for like when a live man it's an hour [TS]

00:06:25   yeah yeah yeah he only has the one seen [TS]

00:06:28   with bruce willis the rest of it he's [TS]

00:06:30   you know in the parking lot with the FBI [TS]

00:06:32   guys and and the with the applicative [TS]

00:06:36   eighties dickhead actors yes deputy [TS]

00:06:37   police chief 20 Robinson that's Tracy [TS]

00:06:40   and the incomparable william atherton [TS]

00:06:43   who is well tastic I was gonna say the [TS]

00:06:45   yes the incomparable william anthony [TS]

00:06:47   joins us now for about ready yet so we [TS]

00:06:52   imagine he's another one of these [TS]

00:06:53   characters that sort of like doesn't [TS]

00:06:54   show up for a long time William Atherton [TS]

00:06:57   ok let's let's let's stop for a second [TS]

00:07:00   way masterton this man is like the home [TS]

00:07:04   run hitter [TS]

00:07:05   of-of jerk villain figures in eighties [TS]

00:07:09   movies and this is like his I guess this [TS]

00:07:13   is sort of a capper because previously [TS]

00:07:15   he appeared in ghostbusters as as Walter [TS]

00:07:19   Peck the EPA man [TS]

00:07:22   yes it's true this man has no dick and [TS]

00:07:26   and my personal favorite and also one of [TS]

00:07:30   my personal favorite films of all time [TS]

00:07:32   real genius where he brought his Jerry [TS]

00:07:34   Hathaway the science professor who gets [TS]

00:07:37   his students to develop death race for [TS]

00:07:39   the government while he's hosting a [TS]

00:07:41   public TV show it in in which by [TS]

00:07:45   contrast he could actually hammer a [TS]

00:07:46   6-inch spike through a board with his [TS]

00:07:48   dick [TS]

00:07:48   yes that's very dresser him that's yeah [TS]

00:07:52   so your hammer later and in this he's [TS]

00:07:55   the vein TV reporter and he reprises his [TS]

00:07:57   role i guess in die hard to but boy I [TS]

00:08:02   that guy I really i mean what i want a [TS]

00:08:06   fantastic actor doing a I just a series [TS]

00:08:11   of horrible horrible characters so well [TS]

00:08:14   on me and you match that in with with [TS]

00:08:16   Paul Gleason who plays 20 Robinson who [TS]

00:08:19   also is the principal in the breakfast [TS]

00:08:21   club Bible you mess with the bull you [TS]

00:08:22   get the horns up I mean what a great [TS]

00:08:25   combo right there and I guess characters [TS]

00:08:27   you know who I don't think interact at [TS]

00:08:29   all in die hard but like they're kind of [TS]

00:08:30   like a one-two punch it doesn't get [TS]

00:08:32   better than that it reminds me of my [TS]

00:08:34   dream of the of a sitcom involving [TS]

00:08:37   Norman fell and vic tayback is [TS]

00:08:39   mismatched roommates i'm sure it doesn't [TS]

00:08:42   get better than that [TS]

00:08:43   yeah we also the FBI man now agent [TS]

00:08:45   Johnson and special agent John Doe relay [TS]

00:08:47   no relation to Johnson's sure I mean [TS]

00:08:50   they're really don't like what great [TS]

00:08:52   characters though because you know of [TS]

00:08:54   course they show up very late in the [TS]

00:08:55   film and they have kind of a you know [TS]

00:08:57   climactic it's sort of about the reward [TS]

00:09:01   is for their exit but they had which is [TS]

00:09:04   the best line in the entire film to my [TS]

00:09:06   mind [TS]

00:09:07   well I guess we're gonna need some more [TS]

00:09:09   FBI guys for right right because they [TS]

00:09:12   decide to take a ride on the helicopter [TS]

00:09:14   which is like Vietnam basic [TS]

00:09:17   I was in one of our high school we we [TS]

00:09:20   may we may end up just quoting dialogue [TS]

00:09:22   from this movie that would be extremely [TS]

00:09:23   well written though I mean like that for [TS]

00:09:25   its kind of the seminal like you know [TS]

00:09:28   action movie right i mean well certainly [TS]

00:09:30   write a it is the model because they [TS]

00:09:32   were how many movies that were diehard I [TS]

00:09:34   on a bus and die hard work but I was [TS]

00:09:37   trying to think [TS]

00:09:38   earlier today what really came before [TS]

00:09:41   that was similar to die hard I mean was [TS]

00:09:42   it really a turning point for action to [TS]

00:09:44   end things like like that the Poseidon [TS]

00:09:46   Adventure in my sure you have weirdo [TS]

00:09:48   films with huge set pieces and the [TS]

00:09:51   showers and never know [TS]

00:09:52   kind of yeah but you also be action [TS]

00:09:54   movies like Rambo or or predator or you [TS]

00:09:57   know things like that were you know [TS]

00:09:58   action movies but but Dinah and you can [TS]

00:10:02   point to cop movies like like bullet or [TS]

00:10:04   dirty harry you know for a certain type [TS]

00:10:06   of it but this isn't really act like a [TS]

00:10:08   cop movie right like he's not doing [TS]

00:10:10   anything a cop would do he's just the [TS]

00:10:13   wrong guy in the wrong place right and [TS]

00:10:15   he's very much in every man whereas you [TS]

00:10:17   know you look at something like Rambo [TS]

00:10:18   it's this this guy who can take out [TS]

00:10:20   entire villages with his flight [TS]

00:10:21   I mean that whole point where he's like [TS]

00:10:23   you know I love you know the first time [TS]

00:10:25   I remember seeing this and i love the [TS]

00:10:27   whole thing with you where you get a [TS]

00:10:29   certain way into the film and then [TS]

00:10:31   really realize the he's been running [TS]

00:10:33   around with no shoes for the last hour [TS]

00:10:35   and then of course the scene where they [TS]

00:10:37   shoot the broken glass out to try and [TS]

00:10:39   prevent him from sure you know the gloss [TS]

00:10:41   run across Jesus I'm stuff that it's [TS]

00:10:45   more so speaking of bad German that's [TS]

00:10:47   the other thing that this movie has in [TS]

00:10:49   common with raiders of the lost ark in [TS]

00:10:50   addition to the bed German is why i was [TS]

00:10:53   watching it I i realized that Bruce [TS]

00:10:56   Willis it in this movie does a lot of [TS]

00:10:59   the same things that that Harrison Ford [TS]

00:11:01   doesn't raise the lost art these are [TS]

00:11:02   heroes who were kind of reluctant and [TS]

00:11:05   get their butts kicked and are in pain [TS]

00:11:06   it and are not having a good time [TS]

00:11:09   they're vulnerable absolutely not [TS]

00:11:11   they're not Superman at all know that's [TS]

00:11:14   one of the great things about is the [TS]

00:11:15   John McClane is out of sorts and even [TS]

00:11:17   though he does these kind of super [TS]

00:11:19   heroic things and he's smart [TS]

00:11:21   you know he also does some things where [TS]

00:11:22   he almost dies and in hindsight he [TS]

00:11:24   realizes were bad ideas but love that [TS]

00:11:27   scene where he talks to himself like the [TS]

00:11:29   big my favorite team meeting you [TS]

00:11:31   what when he's on the roof and he ties [TS]

00:11:33   the fire hose around himself and he's [TS]

00:11:36   like started talking to fuck you doin [TS]

00:11:37   John you know [TS]

00:11:39   yeah and there's the scene where he's [TS]

00:11:40   down in the in the the dance of course [TS]

00:11:44   because there are always fence [TS]

00:11:46   this must be this must be the seminal [TS]

00:11:49   event movie at least write the ground [TS]

00:11:51   through those got events there's [TS]

00:11:52   somebody and action this one time harden [TS]

00:11:56   a building [TS]

00:11:57   yeah it is it is well I laughed when I [TS]

00:11:59   saw the credits roll and I saw that I [TS]

00:12:01   think beyond dubont is the [TS]

00:12:03   cinematographer on this movie director [TS]

00:12:05   of photography who went on to two rappy [TS]

00:12:08   grade which is a die-hard on a bus [TS]

00:12:10   more or less right pretty much yeah [TS]

00:12:14   with fewer events yes yes but more [TS]

00:12:17   windows and although he doesn't make [TS]

00:12:19   quite a bit of use of the floor panels [TS]

00:12:21   in that film so I think floor panels [TS]

00:12:22   with the new vents right whatever speed [TS]

00:12:25   came out that's a that's a that's good [TS]

00:12:27   knowledge there I'll one of the UM so [TS]

00:12:30   that so there's the holiday party that's [TS]

00:12:32   happening very eighties one of the [TS]

00:12:34   things i noticed watching it again last [TS]

00:12:37   week is that it's very eighties in its [TS]

00:12:38   attitude toward a sort of the American [TS]

00:12:41   attitude toward the world in the [TS]

00:12:43   eighties which was that everything was [TS]

00:12:44   going to be about the Germans and the [TS]

00:12:45   Japanese and so in this in a future [TS]

00:12:48   belongs to the Germans the Japanese so [TS]

00:12:50   in this movie we have the giant Japanese [TS]

00:12:51   firm run by the guy from Japan even [TS]

00:12:54   though he went to Harvard and [TS]

00:12:55   yadda-yadda we get the whole back story [TS]

00:12:58   before he gets killed and the Germans [TS]

00:13:00   are the robbers and they're the bad guys [TS]

00:13:02   but it's this I was sitting there [TS]

00:13:04   thinking well yeah in 1988 we thought [TS]

00:13:06   that was what the 21st century was going [TS]

00:13:08   to be it so we're very forward thinking [TS]

00:13:10   it's gonna all be about the Germans and [TS]

00:13:11   the Japanese which didn't happen you [TS]

00:13:14   know so it's very eighties they got that [TS]

00:13:16   they got the Christmas party going on [TS]

00:13:18   but it doesn't get much more eighties [TS]

00:13:20   than the Japanese guys saying we got you [TS]

00:13:22   with tape decks haha [TS]

00:13:24   another great line it will be a day very [TS]

00:13:26   soon when no one knows what the hell [TS]

00:13:28   that means some nice Alice another [TS]

00:13:30   character who is interesting and he he's [TS]

00:13:32   got a lot of a lot of cocaine going on [TS]

00:13:34   so that's the eighties right there are [TS]

00:13:35   so I is speaking of speaking to the [TS]

00:13:38   takagi those interesting point in terms [TS]

00:13:39   of history of the flipside of a lot of [TS]

00:13:41   the other characters and that we get a [TS]

00:13:42   whole lot of [TS]

00:13:44   like about him up front right yeah and [TS]

00:13:46   he gets shot like half an hour into the [TS]

00:13:48   movie [TS]

00:13:48   yeah he's the janet leigh of the film [TS]

00:13:50   it's more that's what you took on he's [TS]

00:13:53   going to be important [TS]

00:13:53   no not so much yeah he's the guy that we [TS]

00:13:56   were supposed to be leave all he can't [TS]

00:13:58   get shot because he's got this much you [TS]

00:14:00   know he's got all this backstory right [TS]

00:14:01   well he exists you just email us how [TS]

00:14:03   ruthless like horses right but um so one [TS]

00:14:08   of the things that surprised me about [TS]

00:14:09   this when you watch it back knowing [TS]

00:14:10   what's going to happen you can sort of [TS]

00:14:11   see how they're setting this up but I i [TS]

00:14:13   think one of the things that I always [TS]

00:14:15   thought was clever about die hard was [TS]

00:14:16   the fact that you are set up to believe [TS]

00:14:19   that the bad guys are terrorists [TS]

00:14:21   alright who want to do you know do [TS]

00:14:24   create a terrorist incident and that's [TS]

00:14:26   what they're all about their radical [TS]

00:14:27   left wing terrorist group and I and in [TS]

00:14:30   fact they end up doing that with the [TS]

00:14:34   cops and using that to their advantage [TS]

00:14:35   but you discover that they're just [TS]

00:14:37   leaves and icing over that very early [TS]

00:14:39   yeah I was a project to realize that way [TS]

00:14:42   back to in that like we the audience [TS]

00:14:44   find that out a lot earlier than I [TS]

00:14:46   remembered [TS]

00:14:47   it'sit's pretty upfront in the movie I [TS]

00:14:49   mean like that obviously the rest of the [TS]

00:14:50   characters are sort of kept in the dark [TS]

00:14:52   and are figuring it out but we as the [TS]

00:14:54   audience already in on that fairly early [TS]

00:14:55   on in the movie but there's a really [TS]

00:14:58   nice moment where where where there's [TS]

00:14:59   that realization of you know you guys [TS]

00:15:02   are just you know criminals they're just [TS]

00:15:03   thieves you're not you know stand for [TS]

00:15:05   anything but they still made exceptional [TS]

00:15:07   thief [TS]

00:15:07   yeah I but it it also provides great [TS]

00:15:10   moments 44 Rickman to really I i love [TS]

00:15:13   the scene where he's demanding the [TS]

00:15:16   release of all the political prisoners [TS]

00:15:18   and he's just starts naming these guys [TS]

00:15:20   because is my friends in the Asian dawn [TS]

00:15:23   and lieutenants and rotation along with [TS]

00:15:25   agent i read about them in time magazine [TS]

00:15:27   like that-that great i must only 60 [TS]

00:15:30   minutes [TS]

00:15:31   there's lots of those kind of a joke [TS]

00:15:33   obviously [TS]

00:15:34   Hans grouper who I almost called John [TS]

00:15:36   group of there by the way [TS]

00:15:37   Hans Gruber is is very savvy about about [TS]

00:15:42   American culture as he as he steals the [TS]

00:15:45   bearer bonds from the vault that is [TS]

00:15:47   being protected by eight seals seven of [TS]

00:15:51   which are apparently operated by a max [TS]

00:15:54   headroom computer [TS]

00:15:55   I was the eighties everybody had an [TS]

00:15:57   accent which can do forward with some [TS]

00:15:59   variety of large industrial drill [TS]

00:16:02   yes yes I mckenna and and digits [TS]

00:16:05   although again in that you've got the [TS]

00:16:07   very clever build-up where there's that [TS]

00:16:09   last one and he keeps saying you know [TS]

00:16:12   the last 1i can't do anything about the [TS]

00:16:14   last one it it you know while they tell [TS]

00:16:16   you very early on like the power it has [TS]

00:16:18   to be the cut power has to be cutting it [TS]

00:16:19   can't be done locally [TS]

00:16:20   yeah like that setup in the first like [TS]

00:16:22   like five minutes at the bad guys appear [TS]

00:16:24   and then you spend all that time being [TS]

00:16:26   told no no that's the hard one that's a [TS]

00:16:27   hard 1i want to go after what a miracle [TS]

00:16:29   i give you the f.b.i no stop [TS]

00:16:34   Hans grouper is a is a smart guy and I [TS]

00:16:37   guess that's the point of the movie is [TS]

00:16:38   he would have gotten away with it if it [TS]

00:16:40   weren't for you meddling John McClane [TS]

00:16:41   although his plans really start going [TS]

00:16:44   awry extremely early in the film and [TS]

00:16:46   just get just gets worse and worse as it [TS]

00:16:47   goes along and yet what's interesting is [TS]

00:16:49   that his plan continues to unfold in [TS]

00:16:52   almost exactly the way he had hoped it [TS]

00:16:54   would I I do notice that they seem and [TS]

00:16:56   watching it again that they seem a lot [TS]

00:16:58   less concerned about the fact that many [TS]

00:17:00   of their compatriots in this mission are [TS]

00:17:02   dead as it goes along like that you know [TS]

00:17:06   really in the end the four core guys are [TS]

00:17:08   like yeah you know other than one who [TS]

00:17:10   loses his brother right everybody else [TS]

00:17:12   is like yeah Carl is very upset about [TS]

00:17:14   other guys are dead back and yet more [TS]

00:17:16   than a film car almost blows the whole [TS]

00:17:18   thing by cutting through the pipes with [TS]

00:17:21   his chainsaw what the other guys still [TS]

00:17:22   working on the phone lines [TS]

00:17:24   yeah that's he never made really that [TS]

00:17:26   much sense to me you know why he wants [TS]

00:17:27   to move it along [TS]

00:17:28   so he's just gonna cut it and make the [TS]

00:17:29   other guy work more work faster [TS]

00:17:32   yeah it's a sibling rivalry yeah that's [TS]

00:17:35   what it ok so where there's a lot of [TS]

00:17:36   depth here that I don't think we've [TS]

00:17:37   explored so so so argyle what's the deal [TS]

00:17:43   with what's the deal with argyle well [TS]

00:17:45   emmanuel lewis was looking for a roll-on [TS]

00:17:47   god no no it's not Emanuel Lewis out [TS]

00:17:51   well now you're gonna tell me the other [TS]

00:17:52   guys and Steve Urkel backer that that [TS]

00:17:55   know that circle [TS]

00:17:56   yeah yeah LOL Reginald veljohnson was [TS]

00:17:58   the tip-off yeah exactly [TS]

00:18:02   arca I mean he's sort of their for comic [TS]

00:18:04   relief right by Yogi and a lot of he'll [TS]

00:18:07   spend a lot of the movie not doing [TS]

00:18:09   much no he's down there talking to his [TS]

00:18:12   girlfriend and whining about her hair [TS]

00:18:15   drinking out of the borrower could live [TS]

00:18:17   bear what role the bear play I mean come [TS]

00:18:19   on [TS]

00:18:20   stuffed bear in the back of a limo the [TS]

00:18:22   guy who plays the barest great it's a [TS]

00:18:24   great pair now I'm trying to remember if [TS]

00:18:27   there's if the bear makes an appearance [TS]

00:18:28   in the final scene when they get into [TS]

00:18:30   the limo instead of an ambulance for [TS]

00:18:32   some reason and drive off [TS]

00:18:34   there's all everything if you had the [TS]

00:18:35   choice a rex limo to like how far I mean [TS]

00:18:39   it becomes manageable for the little [TS]

00:18:41   crap it's a little moisture in the front [TS]

00:18:43   but come on [TS]

00:18:44   yes true he piles into the van he drives [TS]

00:18:46   through the gate which for some reason [TS]

00:18:48   it stopped him previously when he was [TS]

00:18:51   when he realized the terrorists had [TS]

00:18:52   taken over the building was your body [TS]

00:18:54   for writing the limo them that was [TS]

00:18:57   wrapped right so i'm not sure that you [TS]

00:19:01   questioning our girls judgment [TS]

00:19:02   no I'm not argyle is e is infallible [TS]

00:19:05   yeah I mean yes to invoke it just like [TS]

00:19:08   the poke [TS]

00:19:10   that's right maybe just juiced up [TS]

00:19:11   because he took out the the other do the [TS]

00:19:14   Urkel yeah child star on child star [TS]

00:19:16   violence is really ugly do i gotta say [TS]

00:19:18   so [TS]

00:19:19   al Powell are Reginald veljohnson right [TS]

00:19:23   as are acting unbelievably incidentally [TS]

00:19:26   all but he's great he's wonderful [TS]

00:19:29   I wouldn't have it any other way but his [TS]

00:19:31   line readings are so over-the-top and [TS]

00:19:34   and he's like the most he's the typical [TS]

00:19:36   cop right he's the fat don't shot a kid [TS]

00:19:40   buying Cobb that but that man surprised [TS]

00:19:45   that he didn't shoot a kid on like the [TS]

00:19:47   day before the kid was going to retire [TS]

00:19:49   so they can teach you almost anything at [TS]

00:19:52   the academy but they can't teach you how [TS]

00:19:54   to move on [TS]

00:19:55   whatever it is live with a mistake live [TS]

00:19:57   with a mistake [TS]

00:19:58   that's right right we meet him at the at [TS]

00:20:02   the convenience store buying junk food [TS]

00:20:03   right but immediately even though he is [TS]

00:20:05   the typical cop right like that's kind [TS]

00:20:07   of diffused by the fact that you know it [TS]

00:20:09   brings all the stuff in you that the guy [TS]

00:20:11   behind the counter looking at him like [TS]

00:20:12   about you guys just a donuts for my wife [TS]

00:20:15   she's pregnant [TS]

00:20:16   uh-huh whatever like you know that it [TS]

00:20:20   kind of acknowledges ok we're kind of [TS]

00:20:22   being seen [TS]

00:20:22   typical but you know this guy is it [TS]

00:20:24   really stereotypical accept Tia's he [TS]

00:20:28   kinda he's competent right he's [TS]

00:20:32   competent compared to everybody else at [TS]

00:20:34   the parking lot [TS]

00:20:35   well everybody else is ridiculously in [TS]

00:20:37   kept the car get the car wasn't in the [TS]

00:20:40   car [TS]

00:20:40   my favorite thing is that the the SWAT [TS]

00:20:43   team is totally incompetent right [TS]

00:20:45   there's a scene where they walk through [TS]

00:20:46   like like rose bushes already have roots [TS]

00:20:49   out not really [TS]

00:20:50   this is the worst SWAT team ever write [TS]

00:20:53   like they do not come off well at all [TS]

00:20:56   I mean you know and that's one of those [TS]

00:20:58   elements that you sort of makes this all [TS]

00:20:59   its it's very you know i'm not sure i [TS]

00:21:02   would give enough credit to say it's [TS]

00:21:04   very satirical and in its outlook of [TS]

00:21:06   like the police but it's certainly in [TS]

00:21:08   complementary oh I would I would I i [TS]

00:21:10   think actually one of the things that [TS]

00:21:12   surprises me and watching this movie now [TS]

00:21:13   is just how much of it is a satire [TS]

00:21:16   because it's not just the cops right if [TS]

00:21:19   there's this whole media satire where we [TS]

00:21:21   keep coming back over at the station [TS]

00:21:23   I mean it's at least fifty percent a [TS]

00:21:24   comedy movie i'm even the actually sleep [TS]

00:21:27   with liners that little Scott this [TS]

00:21:29   because he was he was the comedian at [TS]

00:21:31   the time right here is exact he was [TS]

00:21:33   moonlighting yeah right i mean vision [TS]

00:21:35   this is the movie that made him an [TS]

00:21:36   action star previous to that he was not [TS]

00:21:38   really bankable as a as any sort of [TS]

00:21:40   action star it's the movie that gave him [TS]

00:21:43   a career beyond what he was destined for [TS]

00:21:45   at that point which was maybe I don't [TS]

00:21:47   know another year and a half of romantic [TS]

00:21:50   comedies before he got to ball to make [TS]

00:21:52   that work [TS]

00:21:53   right right so i really hope he says [TS]

00:21:56   joel silver a real nice Christmas card [TS]

00:21:58   every every year you get the fruit [TS]

00:22:00   basket Hanukkah card or whatever the UH [TS]

00:22:03   so that the TV news what is fascinating [TS]

00:22:06   because they've got this really broad [TS]

00:22:07   I'll silky sweet [TS]

00:22:09   yeah well thats oh so the first off late [TS]

00:22:12   stockholm said yes right right so they [TS]

00:22:14   call it to Helsinki syndrome which is [TS]

00:22:16   weird and then we'll says I think [TS]

00:22:18   they're making fun of the expert there [TS]

00:22:19   before they get to making sure that the [TS]

00:22:21   new I know if they're that or they're [TS]

00:22:22   just trying to like maybe we shouldn't [TS]

00:22:23   talk about Stockholm Syndrome it's very [TS]

00:22:25   weird right right it's been it's [TS]

00:22:26   confusing and and but the the anchorman [TS]

00:22:29   is an idiot and and then there's William [TS]

00:22:31   Atherton who seems smarter but he's a [TS]

00:22:34   jerk and he's of course because its way [TS]

00:22:36   pathogen and he's feuding with the with [TS]

00:22:38   the anchorman for some reason and [TS]

00:22:40   Shanghai is a camera crew and they have [TS]

00:22:42   been severely reacts hell of a lot worse [TS]

00:22:44   to eat it Harvey than any man really [TS]

00:22:46   should I end of all my conversations [TS]

00:22:50   with that [TS]

00:22:52   greg kosc joins us argyle has returned [TS]

00:22:54   from the parking garage [TS]

00:22:56   welcome to the plot eval thank you [TS]

00:22:59   it's some of the movies tend to blur [TS]

00:23:02   together a bit my head they're being you [TS]

00:23:03   know model except the last one which [TS]

00:23:05   although not it's not as terrible movie [TS]

00:23:07   as I thought it would be is by far the [TS]

00:23:09   worst of the poor you really think so [TS]

00:23:11   you really take that the die-hard live [TS]

00:23:14   free or die hard is worse than die hard [TS]

00:23:16   with a vengeance [TS]

00:23:17   oh yeah yeah yeah totally i read a [TS]

00:23:21   review i was reading a post on this the [TS]

00:23:22   other day and I you know I can't [TS]

00:23:25   remember most of what happened in live [TS]

00:23:27   free or die hard and like it's you did [TS]

00:23:29   their computers and computer hackers I [TS]

00:23:31   mean at least at least die hard with a [TS]

00:23:32   vengeance head tamil Jackson jeremy [TS]

00:23:35   irons you know it had running around New [TS]

00:23:37   York you know with those heard of [TS]

00:23:39   puzzles and stuff like that [TS]

00:23:40   it also had you know the bank heist had [TS]

00:23:43   some really good lines but what's really [TS]

00:23:45   a pity they chose to kill off Alan [TS]

00:23:47   Rickman up with old spoiling the end of [TS]

00:23:51   diehard while my god be with you [TS]

00:23:54   they never show his body that he also [TS]

00:23:56   fingerling every great villain like [TS]

00:23:58   every great villain he dies by following [TS]

00:24:01   from something really tall right-hander [TS]

00:24:02   really would want him to live that would [TS]

00:24:04   ruin the movie you know you could've [TS]

00:24:07   thought he died and then have him [TS]

00:24:09   reappear know that's what Karl's yeah [TS]

00:24:12   actually I was going to say that one of [TS]

00:24:13   the most ridiculous thing in this movie [TS]

00:24:15   for me is the fact that they killed Carl [TS]

00:24:16   and he just randomly comes back to life [TS]

00:24:19   so that they could kill him again [TS]

00:24:22   I didn't actually I've never thought [TS]

00:24:23   about how ridiculous that was until this [TS]

00:24:25   time because my parents watching it sort [TS]

00:24:27   of rolled their eyes at this like really [TS]

00:24:29   I'm like I remembered that he came back [TS]

00:24:31   but I I always sort of forgot when he [TS]

00:24:32   came back how badly [TS]

00:24:35   mclean had beat the crap out of him [TS]

00:24:36   right he like he raps a chain around his [TS]

00:24:39   neck and threw husband gets the wall [TS]

00:24:41   could that the when he did he did less [TS]

00:24:44   than he said he would he told me he was [TS]

00:24:46   gonna fucking kill him fucking click him [TS]

00:24:49   and rocky fuckin eat him [TS]

00:24:52   the only thing he said he wouldn't do is [TS]

00:24:53   fucking shit amount and fucking clear [TS]

00:24:56   his stink molecules with some fucking [TS]

00:24:58   late air freshener they missed a product [TS]

00:25:00   placement [TS]

00:25:01   I always thought it would be good if at [TS]

00:25:03   the end you know that whole triumphant [TS]

00:25:05   scene where Carl appears and then and [TS]

00:25:07   then al you know gets his mojo back in [TS]

00:25:09   and takes him out [TS]

00:25:11   you know I having cleared his finally [TS]

00:25:13   cleared his mistake of shooting the kid [TS]

00:25:15   if it turned out that car was [TS]

00:25:16   brandishing a toy gun let me let me let [TS]

00:25:20   me postulate not again this is going to [TS]

00:25:23   hold Mommy's you can see this whole [TS]

00:25:26   movie as though Carl is the [TS]

00:25:27   protectiveness whole I just blow your [TS]

00:25:31   mind [TS]

00:25:31   I'm not seeing that Dan know his brother [TS]

00:25:36   gets killed man it's about vengeance he [TS]

00:25:38   wants blood it's die hard with a [TS]

00:25:40   vengeance [TS]

00:25:40   yeah that's the third is his brother [TS]

00:25:42   gets killed two bag three [TS]

00:25:44   that's not possible because there's [TS]

00:25:46   whole generations of terrorists that are [TS]

00:25:48   going to come after john mccain there's [TS]

00:25:49   anything good about Carl it's that he [TS]

00:25:51   was played by the delightful Alexander [TS]

00:25:52   good enough apparently wasn't good [TS]

00:25:54   enough to go on to anything else was a [TS]

00:25:57   dancer [TS]

00:25:57   yeah that was his gig yeah a very [TS]

00:26:00   well-known very good one too [TS]

00:26:02   yes i did he did not get to showcase [TS]

00:26:04   that at all really [TS]

00:26:05   we get some nice my kicks in at the end [TS]

00:26:08   in his fight with the with John yeah I [TS]

00:26:11   guess I i don't--hey he's one of those [TS]

00:26:13   immortal action movie villains to you [TS]

00:26:16   know I guess you gotta have that [TS]

00:26:18   well you got that you have a rainy guy [TS]

00:26:19   and then you got the brawny i right [TS]

00:26:21   like the henchmen yeah then but then [TS]

00:26:23   you've got a half-dozen sort of [TS]

00:26:25   completely convertible Eurotrash [TS]

00:26:26   villains who are there are some of your [TS]

00:26:28   on some of them are Italian some of the [TS]

00:26:30   German you really have every Eurotrash [TS]

00:26:32   archetype going on there [TS]

00:26:35   get your big bulky german guys you're [TS]

00:26:38   sort of Russian he dude so so here's a [TS]

00:26:40   scene that I i really appreciated that I [TS]

00:26:42   am in watching it again was there's the [TS]

00:26:47   scene where the guy skills the candy [TS]

00:26:48   what what yeah the Syrian guys gonna [TS]

00:26:53   steal the candy but likely he gets he [TS]

00:26:55   gets the kitty for the little shop in [TS]

00:26:57   the in the in the lobby of the plaza and [TS]

00:26:59   then runs back to his post and that is [TS]

00:27:01   killed but he dies he's driving i'm [TS]

00:27:05   showing sonu get and a big race every [TS]

00:27:07   bar yeah that is strange that wasn't [TS]

00:27:10   what I was thinking [TS]

00:27:11   dan but that I hit didn't hijack a very [TS]

00:27:14   strange scene [TS]

00:27:15   no we're uh we're alan rickman does [TS]

00:27:19   American accent and and throws himself [TS]

00:27:21   upon the mercy of John McClane as [TS]

00:27:23   somebody who's escaped from the bill [TS]

00:27:26   clay yeah that that's uh that's a great [TS]

00:27:31   scene and i like that scene because [TS]

00:27:32   they're not only do we have a what's a [TS]

00:27:35   really smart plot twist which is a you [TS]

00:27:37   know showing that hunts Gruber is it's a [TS]

00:27:39   very smart guy and he's figured out a [TS]

00:27:41   way to to to get one over on John [TS]

00:27:44   McClane but that you also see you know [TS]

00:27:46   well this is McLain gonna figure this [TS]

00:27:48   out which he does when does he [TS]

00:27:51   and then there's the interplay when [TS]

00:27:52   they're trying you know to sort of feel [TS]

00:27:54   each other out and see if you know if [TS]

00:27:56   he's really who he says he is [TS]

00:27:58   that's just such a great scene it's one [TS]

00:28:00   of the few scenes where the where [TS]

00:28:01   they're face-to-face if not you know the [TS]

00:28:03   only one of the things I like about that [TS]

00:28:05   scene is that when Hans Gruber claims to [TS]

00:28:07   be built clay John McClane looks over at [TS]

00:28:10   him and a like a interactive building [TS]

00:28:12   address board and there's a William clay [TS]

00:28:14   there and you know to check out the name [TS]

00:28:16   is real but that means Hans had the [TS]

00:28:18   foresight to go ahead and look at that [TS]

00:28:19   like as he walked into the room or just [TS]

00:28:21   as part of the ambient what he's noticed [TS]

00:28:23   that right because he's clearly not [TS]

00:28:24   looking at it in that scene right he [TS]

00:28:26   can't even see it he's in he's not he's [TS]

00:28:29   sort of enough it just is next to it and [TS]

00:28:30   facing away from it's a great city which [TS]

00:28:32   is that fleshes out his background every [TS]

00:28:33   room he walks into he Scouts the room [TS]

00:28:36   for when he's going to need something [TS]

00:28:37   later but it really is like he's the [TS]

00:28:39   mastermind right like it's totally he's [TS]

00:28:41   his operation secondly here it's all [TS]

00:28:44   planned like everything is sort of [TS]

00:28:46   perfectly [TS]

00:28:47   I mean without being like saying [TS]

00:28:48   stereotypically German but like there is [TS]

00:28:50   that whole like it's like clockwork [TS]

00:28:51   right you know his whole this is the [TS]

00:28:53   plan [TS]

00:28:54   we're gonna wait for the FBI guys show [TS]

00:28:55   up they're gonna cut the power that's [TS]

00:28:57   gonna let us get in here we're gonna [TS]

00:28:58   blow up the roof so that they think [TS]

00:28:59   we're all dead we're going to take the [TS]

00:29:01   the car truck or the ambulance and drive [TS]

00:29:03   out you know nobody will know we were [TS]

00:29:05   here he is almost brilliant most [TS]

00:29:07   efficient most vicious unluckiest [TS]

00:29:09   terrorists and not even a terrorist just [TS]

00:29:12   a fake fake terrorist I got invited to [TS]

00:29:15   the party by accident if mclean had [TS]

00:29:17   missed his plane or been in traffic or [TS]

00:29:19   the whole plot goes perfectly well it's [TS]

00:29:22   really mr. Takagi doesn't think I've got [TS]

00:29:24   my dr office and argyle to pick him up [TS]

00:29:27   and bring him to the park [TS]

00:29:28   ready because Holly's been working very [TS]

00:29:30   hard and also as a as a Japanese [TS]

00:29:34   businessman i feel very strongly that [TS]

00:29:36   the estranged husband and the wife [TS]

00:29:38   should get back together I don't really [TS]

00:29:39   know but Takagi's motivation in hiring a [TS]

00:29:41   limo or worries little dazed argyle just [TS]

00:29:45   a friend I skies are gonna rent a limo [TS]

00:29:47   driver or c2 kagaz limo driver it is his [TS]

00:29:49   first time driving a limo right right [TS]

00:29:52   used to be a tat used to be a cab driver [TS]

00:29:54   well its new your it's our Christmas Eve [TS]

00:29:55   right so how many maybe just falling in [TS]

00:29:57   is a Christmas Eve yeah that or is it [TS]

00:30:03   y'all [TS]

00:30:03   I was Christmas Eve it's the holiday [TS]

00:30:06   party before Christmas but i'm not sure [TS]

00:30:08   attack no one does it on Christmas Eve [TS]

00:30:09   though reading the Japanese only in [TS]

00:30:11   gremlins where the kids are going to [TS]

00:30:13   school course but there's nobody else [TS]

00:30:14   there right like the whole building shut [TS]

00:30:16   down nobody else around [TS]

00:30:17   well it's there it's a little direction [TS]

00:30:19   right America they're building it so [TS]

00:30:21   it's not completed yet which is why [TS]

00:30:22   there's all that room for action scenes [TS]

00:30:24   up in the upper floors [TS]

00:30:25   I want to put in a good word in this [TS]

00:30:28   might sound strange but I want to put in [TS]

00:30:30   a good word for Ellis oh he's lost [TS]

00:30:33   despite being a stupid like a god damn [TS]

00:30:36   stupid schmuck [TS]

00:30:37   haha on co does do he has one very [TS]

00:30:41   redeeming quality which is that he [TS]

00:30:43   doesn't give up Holly right in that he [TS]

00:30:46   he claims to Hans when trying to [TS]

00:30:48   negotiate and get sort of John to like [TS]

00:30:51   you know give himself up so that they [TS]

00:30:52   can all try to go home or whatever or so [TS]

00:30:54   he's misguided plan is we just actually [TS]

00:30:57   wind up getting him killed as is right [TS]

00:30:59   we'll keep tellin Hans has a the John's [TS]

00:31:01   a friend of his you-know-what find [TS]

00:31:03   somebody you do care about [TS]

00:31:05   yeah I don't give them to you he says it [TS]

00:31:07   and you you are led to believe that [TS]

00:31:09   Ellis is selling out Holly because he's [TS]

00:31:12   had this conflict with holly was like [TS]

00:31:13   guys because your husband he's ruined [TS]

00:31:15   everything but he doesn't sell he [TS]

00:31:16   doesn't sell him out he doesn't sell her [TS]

00:31:18   out that and you know so he's a jerk but [TS]

00:31:21   he doesn't turn Holly into a hostage and [TS]

00:31:24   he gets a he gets going he does [TS]

00:31:26   Selma clean because he gives it all [TS]

00:31:28   absolutely right but not until Holly out [TS]

00:31:31   because he's trying to get in your pants [TS]

00:31:32   so i'm not sure you can really call that [TS]

00:31:34   a positive that's a hero man now it's [TS]

00:31:37   the harder i think of diehard has a [TS]

00:31:39   problem it's that a lot of these [TS]

00:31:40   ancillary characters [TS]

00:31:42   that the the douchebags are complete [TS]

00:31:44   irredeemable douchebags that makes it so [TS]

00:31:48   great that the Deputy Police the [TS]

00:31:51   reporter with the FBI guys Ellis they [TS]

00:31:54   they are i mean well i think McClain and [TS]

00:31:57   Hans are really really well fleshed out [TS]

00:31:59   realistic peoplesmart guys everybody [TS]

00:32:02   else's is almost parody well that that's [TS]

00:32:04   the you know something that we might [TS]

00:32:05   have been talking about before you came [TS]

00:32:06   on as this this strange dichotomy in [TS]

00:32:08   this movie where there are parts of it [TS]

00:32:10   that are pretty straight and actually [TS]

00:32:12   and really great and then there are [TS]

00:32:14   these parts that are really weird broad [TS]

00:32:18   satire and funny but a little bit by [TS]

00:32:22   dissident from the rest of the movie [TS]

00:32:24   because the elbow cop is that way to [TS]

00:32:26   robocop has huge wide satire and then [TS]

00:32:29   there's some really great action scenes [TS]

00:32:31   baby feels like two different movies not [TS]

00:32:34   die hard so much petrol become well i [TS]

00:32:36   mean i think the part of that were [TS]

00:32:37   diehard comes from the fact that this [TS]

00:32:39   was adapted from a book basically which [TS]

00:32:41   was a lot more straight-laced as far as [TS]

00:32:44   it goes [TS]

00:32:44   I went and read about this before you [TS]

00:32:46   know it in in looking stuff up about [TS]

00:32:49   this because yeah there's a whole [TS]

00:32:52   different inserted it borrows very [TS]

00:32:55   heavily from the book but they changed [TS]

00:32:56   very like certain key things including [TS]

00:32:58   like instead of Hollywood isn't it the [TS]

00:33:01   Holly character is actually his daughter [TS]

00:33:02   instead of his wife and Alice's her [TS]

00:33:05   boyfriend [TS]

00:33:06   basically but a lot of the characters [TS]

00:33:07   are actually pretty similar and they [TS]

00:33:10   apparently take a lot from it but i [TS]

00:33:12   guess i think a lot of the satire [TS]

00:33:14   elements probably came in later on in [TS]

00:33:16   the process and so I think there is a [TS]

00:33:18   reason that feels very very conflicted [TS]

00:33:20   about that in some ways [TS]

00:33:21   did you know that the book is a sequel [TS]

00:33:23   to another book that was the source for [TS]

00:33:26   a 1968 Frank Sinatra movie I did not [TS]

00:33:30   Frank Sinatra was the original John [TS]

00:33:31   McClane wow you just in my mind it's [TS]

00:33:35   called the detective it's not supposed [TS]

00:33:37   to be very good [TS]

00:33:38   the guy who wrote the book that the [TS]

00:33:39   detective was based on wrote the second [TS]

00:33:42   book as a sequel intending to make it [TS]

00:33:45   into a movie and Sinatra past and then [TS]

00:33:47   20 years later Bruce Willis made it [TS]

00:33:50   wow they're very much like those too yes [TS]

00:33:53   it was able to record albums they both [TS]

00:33:57   acted if you know they're both 20th [TS]

00:34:00   century American men they both had [TS]

00:34:02   people killed [TS]

00:34:03   I i like that further than that die hard [TS]

00:34:07   2 is also based on a book by a totally [TS]

00:34:10   different author yeah it's like they [TS]

00:34:13   couldn't just come up with an idea for [TS]

00:34:14   we've already making the first book p [TS]

00:34:16   but look what they did when they came up [TS]

00:34:18   with ideas the third and fourth movies [TS]

00:34:20   I'd much rather have a book that has [TS]

00:34:21   somebody like a good deal interested in [TS]

00:34:24   the franchise building a plot one of the [TS]

00:34:26   things that makes diehard standout for [TS]

00:34:27   most action movies is the plot makes [TS]

00:34:29   sense now that everybody's smart it has [TS]

00:34:31   to stand alone as a book without the [TS]

00:34:33   whole apparatus of a movie stars and and [TS]

00:34:36   franchise around it and then if you [TS]

00:34:38   start with that you can go ahead and [TS]

00:34:39   make a good movie after you attack all [TS]

00:34:41   the other crap on do i think i think one [TS]

00:34:43   of the reasons why we saw so many movies [TS]

00:34:44   that were diehard in them in an ex right [TS]

00:34:47   afterward is is the e I'm not sure [TS]

00:34:52   whether it's true or not but I think [TS]

00:34:53   there's a perception that the the fact [TS]

00:34:55   that this is set in a confined space [TS]

00:34:57   with a confined set of characters and [TS]

00:35:00   the fact that this movie has a very type [TS]

00:35:02   of plot and it goes through a stage play [TS]

00:35:04   it goes from item to item to item and [TS]

00:35:07   then whether those two are perfectly [TS]

00:35:10   connected or not I think it's arguable [TS]

00:35:11   but I think that's why we saw a lot of [TS]

00:35:14   this is because that's one of the great [TS]

00:35:15   strengths of diehard right is that it [TS]

00:35:17   all you know it all follows and and [TS]

00:35:20   every action that happens really leads [TS]

00:35:23   to the next action and you never you [TS]

00:35:26   never have that real sag I think we're [TS]

00:35:28   thinking about well now what and then [TS]

00:35:29   there's a new complication that comes in [TS]

00:35:31   i mean the ester the police come but you [TS]

00:35:33   know that they're always going to come [TS]

00:35:34   and they come fairly early so as it [TS]

00:35:37   turns out necessary [TS]

00:35:39   yes as it turns out because the police [TS]

00:35:42   are pretty useless actually also [TS]

00:35:43   completely I that they need but I guess [TS]

00:35:46   you gotta get one before you get the [TS]

00:35:47   other alright and that that plays [TS]

00:35:49   against the ipod that plays up how what [TS]

00:35:51   a genius Hans Gruber is right because he [TS]

00:35:54   wants the police to come [TS]

00:35:55   he wants them to call the police he [TS]

00:35:57   wants the police to be there he wants [TS]

00:35:59   the FBI to come and so all these action [TS]

00:36:02   movie tropes of like you know we gotta [TS]

00:36:04   get out of here oh no the cops are here [TS]

00:36:05   now we're trapped in the bank [TS]

00:36:07   for khan's grouper he he wants all of [TS]

00:36:10   the bad things to happen because he's [TS]

00:36:12   that smart is that he's playing against [TS]

00:36:13   the expectations that's one of the great [TS]

00:36:15   things about the movie and then of [TS]

00:36:16   course there's Bruce Willis who's the [TS]

00:36:18   monkey in the wrench you can see the [TS]

00:36:20   monkey in the wrench at the lie that's a [TS]

00:36:23   lie in the only he's applying the [TS]

00:36:24   ointment but my okay right right up in [TS]

00:36:26   the conference room [TS]

00:36:28   that's right um Alex that's clue [TS]

00:36:31   the other thing that I don't know if you [TS]

00:36:32   guys have covered this but the other [TS]

00:36:33   thing i like about this movie it [TS]

00:36:34   compared to other action movies of the [TS]

00:36:36   era is that Bruce Willis appears to be [TS]

00:36:38   at least marginally human that this is [TS]

00:36:41   the same thing with Indiana Jones is hot [TS]

00:36:43   he can get scared he can you [TS]

00:36:46   yes we do this you've been over this so [TS]

00:36:47   yeah that's a no that's okay we can we [TS]

00:36:49   can go back there to it because you're [TS]

00:36:51   welcome to the party again pal [TS]

00:36:52   haha no you're exactly right that the [TS]

00:36:54   it's the vulnerable hero where he there [TS]

00:36:57   there's some there's a scene where he's [TS]

00:36:58   like punching his way through a a wall [TS]

00:37:03   or a piece of glass or something like [TS]

00:37:04   that you can see him wince and he like [TS]

00:37:07   doesn't want to do it but he knows he [TS]

00:37:08   has to you know what the whole audience [TS]

00:37:11   cringes every time he pulls the glass [TS]

00:37:12   out of his home God whom [TS]

00:37:14   yeah and and that's so great to have the [TS]

00:37:16   vulnerable hero he smart he's vulnerable [TS]

00:37:19   he's confident because he's like this [TS]

00:37:21   cop but you know that's not that [TS]

00:37:24   explains why he can do gunplay and they [TS]

00:37:26   have some he's not alone but he's not [TS]

00:37:28   Schwarzenegger right Bobby let's get him [TS]

00:37:30   in that last scene right worries comes [TS]

00:37:32   down on you know you got my crap kicked [TS]

00:37:35   out even shot by that point to get shot [TS]

00:37:38   in the shoulder he'd been beaten the [TS]

00:37:39   crap out of my car like in that whole [TS]

00:37:41   like you know like brawl in the in that [TS]

00:37:44   room with all the pipes from the boards [TS]

00:37:45   or whatever I mean you'd run over glass [TS]

00:37:48   you you know you've done everything [TS]

00:37:49   there's a scene in the second movie [TS]

00:37:51   where they're escorting people down this [TS]

00:37:55   empty airport hallway and well the [TS]

00:37:57   second movie [TS]

00:37:58   how can the same thing happened the same [TS]

00:37:59   guy twice okay why does this keep [TS]

00:38:02   happening to us and the terrorists are [TS]

00:38:06   fake painting crew and they opened fire [TS]

00:38:08   in this ambush and McClain is trapped [TS]

00:38:11   under would i think the the painting [TS]

00:38:13   scaffolding and the gun is out of reach [TS]

00:38:15   and the terrorist is walking down the [TS]

00:38:17   moving hall with moving stairway moving [TS]

00:38:19   walkway towards him and he flips the [TS]

00:38:21   power on and the gun starts moving [TS]

00:38:23   towards him and that was my favorite [TS]

00:38:25   scene in the second movie because it was [TS]

00:38:27   something that was so unexpected as a [TS]

00:38:29   moviegoer but totally natural and [TS]

00:38:31   totally something smart character would [TS]

00:38:33   absolutely smart so what we what we [TS]

00:38:35   think of area that second movie I you [TS]

00:38:37   know I think if the time people were [TS]

00:38:39   impressed that was actually a pretty [TS]

00:38:40   good movie when everybody assumed the [TS]

00:38:41   sequel's were going to be lousy and it [TS]

00:38:43   is impossible in in many ways that this [TS]

00:38:46   would happen to that guy again but you [TS]

00:38:48   know it was a very successful movie on [TS]

00:38:51   top of everything else mean it's not [TS]

00:38:52   it's it's obviously I think we most was [TS]

00:38:55   probably agree it's not to the same [TS]

00:38:57   caliber as die hard but it's still [TS]

00:38:58   entertain much better than it could have [TS]

00:39:00   been the sole thing I remember about it [TS]

00:39:02   having seen it in the theater and then [TS]

00:39:04   not sense is that it wasn't complete [TS]

00:39:06   crap that's it stabs a guy in the face [TS]

00:39:08   with the idea with an icicle some point [TS]

00:39:10   there's a plane what I remember that [TS]

00:39:12   whatever made with the the plane crash [TS]

00:39:14   was I mean devastating at the time it [TS]

00:39:17   was I remember coverage of how violent [TS]

00:39:19   movies were that season and they rank [TS]

00:39:20   the body count of all the action movies [TS]

00:39:22   that came out and diehard ranked up in [TS]

00:39:24   the 300 because of the jumbo jetliner [TS]

00:39:26   crash right flown by colm Meaney by from [TS]

00:39:30   Star Trek for Brian crashes a plane [TS]

00:39:33   everybody dies and when that guy is a [TS]

00:39:37   loser cleans wandering through the [TS]

00:39:39   racers Richard Thornburg which is pretty [TS]

00:39:41   great [TS]

00:39:42   oh yeah yeah William Atherton got I love [TS]

00:39:46   that guy he is so great in in all its up [TS]

00:39:49   hehe i just saw him he was on an episode [TS]

00:39:51   of lost and I you you're not going to [TS]

00:39:54   believe this but he was playing a kind [TS]

00:39:56   of a jerk find that hard to believe [TS]

00:39:58   you're right it's amazing in mind below [TS]

00:40:02   0 that that guy so the original the [TS]

00:40:06   original diehard was directed by john [TS]

00:40:08   mctiernan who also directed die hard [TS]

00:40:10   with a vengeance i believe [TS]

00:40:12   mhm and and then I think recently did [TS]

00:40:14   some time and is now out on bail [TS]

00:40:16   there's a great reference to him if you [TS]

00:40:18   ever watched them do you ever watch [TS]

00:40:20   alias yesterday rancho absolutely a [TS]

00:40:22   reference in one episode that's a [TS]

00:40:24   die-hard light episode where so there [TS]

00:40:26   pull up and like a like a he hvac like [TS]

00:40:29   van or something and it's called like [TS]

00:40:30   McTiernan repairs or something [TS]

00:40:32   either nice little you know the head so [TS]

00:40:35   so i guess if we talk about the cultural [TS]

00:40:37   significance of diehard beyond being the [TS]

00:40:40   greatest christmas movie ever [TS]

00:40:41   right then yeah absolutely you know [TS]

00:40:45   families gather around the hearth on [TS]

00:40:46   Christmas Eve to watch Bruce never sung [TS]

00:40:50   a rousing round of your PKA mother I [TS]

00:40:53   have okay now before so before I get [TS]

00:40:55   what I was gonna say i'm going to point [TS]

00:40:55   out if you haven't seen the die-hard [TS]

00:40:58   music video on youtube by the the band [TS]

00:41:01   guys night visit that is a great video [TS]

00:41:03   please go see it because it's an [TS]

00:41:05   original song about the die hard [TS]

00:41:07   franchise including those famous words [TS]

00:41:10   as the chorus and boy try to listen to [TS]

00:41:14   that man not singers the next five days [TS]

00:41:16   and they will get out at one point to [TS]

00:41:18   which was really frustrating because all [TS]

00:41:20   the clips than the they had a music [TS]

00:41:23   video with the clips and everything onto [TS]

00:41:24   the ball it's all back up [TS]

00:41:26   alka including the 4th verse for [TS]

00:41:28   die-hard with revenge s or lip print [TS]

00:41:31   lifted and I hardware they say we don't [TS]

00:41:32   we have really seen it but we're pretty [TS]

00:41:33   sure that John McClane kicks ass [TS]

00:41:35   that's how the song have you talked [TS]

00:41:36   about have you guys talked about the [TS]

00:41:37   fifth one yet i was now didn't I know [TS]

00:41:41   they are diehard movie they've been [TS]

00:41:43   talking about the what huh [TS]

00:41:44   now is this like the crystals comments [TS]

00:41:46   and practical joke of it doesn't really [TS]

00:41:47   exist [TS]

00:41:48   yeah this is the caddyshack to of die [TS]

00:41:50   hard films so there are they doing in a [TS]

00:41:52   you know how I enjoyed the fourth one as [TS]

00:41:55   an action movie just as a [TS]

00:41:56   straightforward actually happy I you [TS]

00:41:57   know I would I think that's I I'm ok I'm [TS]

00:42:00   ok with that Bruce Willis is a lot of [TS]

00:42:02   fun [TS]

00:42:02   they are currently working on the script [TS]

00:42:04   Justin Long was not terrible [TS]

00:42:06   no no I actually really guy i will say [TS]

00:42:09   my credit goes to mary elizabeth [TS]

00:42:11   winstead who played John plays out the [TS]

00:42:14   grown-up Lucy McClane john mccain's [TS]

00:42:16   daughter and really and more recently [TS]

00:42:18   was in Scott poker and she's um she's uh [TS]

00:42:20   what what uh what's-his-name just along [TS]

00:42:23   as her boyfriend right [TS]

00:42:25   so in in the night at the beginning not [TS]

00:42:29   to be i mean no there's no do they do [TS]

00:42:32   they owe that's right ok but they [TS]

00:42:34   learned important lessons about each [TS]

00:42:35   other during the mid 30 * that's what I [TS]

00:42:38   was gonna say I was gonna comment based [TS]

00:42:40   on your years you said john tyler start [TS]

00:42:42   talking about John material directing [TS]

00:42:43   the first 1i think you know the second [TS]

00:42:45   one was directed by running hard [TS]

00:42:46   and we've directed and yet directed [TS]

00:42:48   highlander that correct and cutthroat [TS]

00:42:51   island so you know you can see you can [TS]

00:42:54   see sort of the pedigrees the so what i [TS]

00:42:58   was getting out earlier before we took [TS]

00:43:00   those tangents was the influence of this [TS]

00:43:03   movie in the sense that there were [TS]

00:43:04   countless movies and TV shows afterward [TS]

00:43:07   that basically took this plot of put a [TS]

00:43:10   kid put a hero put a character walk them [TS]

00:43:13   in a in a difficult situation in an [TS]

00:43:15   enclosed space and with bad guys and see [TS]

00:43:18   what happens [TS]

00:43:19   so Duffy yes there's an attraction for [TS]

00:43:23   this episode of buffy the vampire slayer [TS]

00:43:24   called school hard which is what you [TS]

00:43:27   think they've got locked in the school I [TS]

00:43:30   think of something completely different [TS]

00:43:31   when I hear that I know you do [TS]

00:43:33   see there you go Greg you got in there [TS]

00:43:34   you guys so to speak so to speak [TS]

00:43:37   oh this episode is rated r clearly uh [TS]

00:43:42   there's an episode of Star Trek The Next [TS]

00:43:44   Generation where Captain Picard and [TS]

00:43:46   locked on the enterprise all by himself [TS]

00:43:47   and has to have a house to well it's [TS]

00:43:50   being cleaned while it's being all [TS]

00:43:53   evacuated by a depth by the right [TS]

00:43:55   numbers right it kills everything [TS]

00:43:56   doesn't your laser goes around don't [TS]

00:43:58   forget episode that stairwell you climbs [TS]

00:44:00   up into the front of 10 forward to avoid [TS]

00:44:02   it right before it turns out i was good [TS]

00:44:04   i was gonna stay they have to run that [TS]

00:44:05   like every six months or ten forward [TS]

00:44:07   starts to smell like a small around that [TS]

00:44:10   being about it [TS]

00:44:11   you have no idea what going and keeps [TS]

00:44:13   the moment she's actually not very good [TS]

00:44:16   at her job and she's really old I mean [TS]

00:44:18   yeah it's not good at dr. Crusher's [TS]

00:44:21   quarters by the way proof that places [TS]

00:44:23   and some pics back it was sad when data [TS]

00:44:25   left his cat on board when they were [TS]

00:44:26   doing this he came back they were able [TS]

00:44:28   to get the pot was never seen again [TS]

00:44:30   it's about became a spot on the floor [TS]

00:44:33   yeah I was gonna say my favorite one of [TS]

00:44:35   my favorite diehard limoges was in the [TS]

00:44:36   short-lived series the middleman there's [TS]

00:44:38   an episode where they get locked in [TS]

00:44:40   their their headquarters [TS]

00:44:41   I'm gonna have to crawl through the [TS]

00:44:42   bread and it's full of impact die hard [TS]

00:44:44   references including my what a great [TS]

00:44:46   quote it's like diehard in a building [TS]

00:44:48   yeah and she crawls through the vents [TS]

00:44:50   that even does bruce willis impression [TS]

00:44:52   hey come out to the coast we'll get [TS]

00:44:54   together have a few laughs yeah good one [TS]

00:44:57   and then the most and then the [TS]

00:45:00   the paintball episode of community this [TS]

00:45:02   is Tom had a and a nice diehard bit [TS]

00:45:05   frightened of it right and I I think of [TS]

00:45:07   the the movies that have been made i [TS]

00:45:09   mean i mentioned speed earlier I think [TS]

00:45:11   speed is even though it's not quite the [TS]

00:45:13   same as the the movie i would say it's [TS]

00:45:15   almost like diehard in the sense that [TS]

00:45:17   not only was it a good movie but it was [TS]

00:45:19   kind of a kick into it in its [TS]

00:45:21   high-concept setup and yet also having a [TS]

00:45:24   payoff ebert gave die hard 2 stars out [TS]

00:45:27   of four when it first came out [TS]

00:45:28   complaining mostly about the broad [TS]

00:45:30   secondary characters and then he gave [TS]

00:45:32   speed to cruise control three stars haha [TS]

00:45:37   wow just goes to show you it's like die [TS]

00:45:40   hard on his high during the eighties the [TS]

00:45:41   cruise ship [TS]

00:45:43   yes we can't slow down to the boat it [TS]

00:45:47   explodes [TS]

00:45:48   well they had that there's a scene where [TS]

00:45:50   the cruise ship is coming at the dock [TS]

00:45:52   and it's supposed to be very exciting [TS]

00:45:53   except it looks like it's not moving at [TS]

00:45:55   all it can look like five miles an hour [TS]

00:45:57   I just scroll down the wikipedia entry [TS]

00:45:59   for die-hard and under the see also [TS]

00:46:01   section the first entry is die hard film [TS]

00:46:03   series fine [TS]

00:46:04   the second entry is films considered the [TS]

00:46:07   greatest ever not even the crib fit [TS]

00:46:12   greatest Chris what else is on that note [TS]

00:46:13   I was great I I mean I'm kind of scared [TS]

00:46:16   to click on that I'm worried that speed [TS]

00:46:18   to might also be honey is it maybe of [TS]

00:46:21   their kind of sort of crept off the end [TS]

00:46:23   of the screen there it is very extensive [TS]

00:46:25   wait Chris there's a Christmas section [TS]

00:46:27   oakley success with section that does [TS]

00:46:29   not have die hard in all geez [TS]

00:46:32   so since this is a holiday holiday movie [TS]

00:46:35   themed podcast i before we go I also [TS]

00:46:39   wanted to ask do you have any other if [TS]

00:46:41   diehard isn't let's put it in its own [TS]

00:46:43   category any other favorite Christmas [TS]

00:46:46   movies things that you watch on a [TS]

00:46:47   regular basis around the holidays any of [TS]

00:46:50   you [TS]

00:46:51   yeah well now yes I psychological drama [TS]

00:46:54   where Jimmy Stewart goes insane Harvey [TS]

00:46:57   it's written as the worst frickin life [TS]

00:47:00   ever and yet we are you that it is [TS]

00:47:02   wonderful I mean it's sort of one it's [TS]

00:47:05   it's all happening in his head as he [TS]

00:47:06   plunges to his death right that's yes [TS]

00:47:08   yes it's it's the occurrence at Owl [TS]

00:47:10   Creek Bridge with Clarence angel I will [TS]

00:47:12   you might my second favorite Christmas [TS]

00:47:14   movie of all time which is santa claus [TS]

00:47:16   conquers the martians wow it's drop oh [TS]

00:47:20   well yeah [TS]

00:47:21   Tropico and recycling yourself that mr. [TS]

00:47:23   Dora yeah as a child before before she [TS]

00:47:27   bought her golden globe [TS]

00:47:28   yes good knowledge i have idolized and [TS]

00:47:32   basically a greater 3000 i have I that's [TS]

00:47:34   the only person worth watching you know [TS]

00:47:37   at this point it's it's kind of pass a [TS]

00:47:39   to say Christmas story so I'll skip that [TS]

00:47:41   but i will say that i have recently [TS]

00:47:42   added to the list films that i watch [TS]

00:47:45   fairly regularly at all it is [TS]

00:47:47   l.o.l if we watch that we broke that out [TS]

00:47:51   with my kids last week who are 9 and six [TS]

00:47:55   and they thought it was hilarious and it [TS]

00:47:59   is a funny movie but the kids the kids [TS]

00:48:02   loved it too and it stuck with my son [TS]

00:48:04   because we were actually watching [TS]

00:48:05   Miracle on thirty-fourth Street which is [TS]

00:48:07   my wife's favorite holiday film and i [TS]

00:48:08   really like it a lot and there's a seen [TS]

00:48:10   a mailroom and my son says this isn't at [TS]

00:48:12   all like the middle room and else i will [TS]

00:48:16   say honest-to-goodness miracle third 43 [TS]

00:48:18   to the original is is probably my other [TS]

00:48:21   favorite way the original today remake [TS]

00:48:23   that one too many times for don't know [TS]

00:48:27   go to the original we actually have the [TS]

00:48:29   DVD and it offers the color versions yes [TS]

00:48:32   like a way for you call no letter which [TS]

00:48:34   is better now that the black my version [TS]

00:48:36   is superior black-and-white all the way [TS]

00:48:38   that's fine with that but elf is a great [TS]

00:48:40   help is a lot of a lot of fun although i [TS]

00:48:42   can't watch out without thinking that [TS]

00:48:43   james Kalm you know just needed the [TS]

00:48:46   money but he's good he's very good at [TS]

00:48:49   what you needed for imagine [TS]

00:48:50   yeah yeah it's just it's come to that [TS]

00:48:52   with james caan but maybe you know it's [TS]

00:48:54   a good film when the heart you know it's [TS]

00:48:56   got so much heart that the infernal [TS]

00:48:59   mugging of the Allies name not going to [TS]

00:49:02   Michael Daryl Daryl doesn't drive you [TS]

00:49:06   absolutely up the wall know that that's [TS]

00:49:07   one of the wind will Ferrell movies [TS]

00:49:09   where where it's it's a character that [TS]

00:49:13   it is a perfect fit for him committing [TS]

00:49:15   to just go all the way with it where [TS]

00:49:18   we're in other movies are like really [TS]

00:49:19   will ferrell that one you know buddy the [TS]

00:49:22   elf really is designed for somebody like [TS]

00:49:25   will ferrell and then what [TS]

00:49:26   Stewart is in that movie and there's a [TS]

00:49:27   lot of fun any other favorite a holiday [TS]

00:49:30   fare in a charlie brown wars holiday [TS]

00:49:32   special [TS]

00:49:33   oh how I i if I could reach you through [TS]

00:49:36   this look [TS]

00:49:37   definitely if you get the opportunity to [TS]

00:49:39   pick up and watch the rifftrax for that [TS]

00:49:41   it is phenomenal [TS]

00:49:43   really they're there i don't i don't [TS]

00:49:45   know like it's still put my put myself [TS]

00:49:47   through that yeah i was going to take [TS]

00:49:48   you've gotta like get the dr like [TS]

00:49:50   bittorrent though I they had it on [TS]

00:49:53   google video and it's you can find it [TS]

00:49:54   around that the beauty of it is they [TS]

00:49:56   actually do the commercials as well say [TS]

00:50:00   you've got you know these these look for [TS]

00:50:02   the union label kind of a you know Union [TS]

00:50:05   song ads that you don't get any more [TS]

00:50:08   that they back when there were unions of [TS]

00:50:10   course boy commercials for things that [TS]

00:50:12   just look unbelievably idiotic and they [TS]

00:50:15   point that out so it's it's a nice break [TS]

00:50:18   between be Arthur singing 45-minute [TS]

00:50:21   songs and Harvey Korman embarrassing [TS]

00:50:24   himself and and probably about five [TS]

00:50:27   future generations of Corman's ways [TS]

00:50:29   performance you remember when the Star [TS]

00:50:30   Wars Christmas special was the thing [TS]

00:50:32   that George Lucas had the most to be [TS]

00:50:33   embarrassed about [TS]

00:50:35   goodbye although the good old days are [TS]

00:50:39   you have to about 1998 he still thinks [TS]

00:50:42   it is that's how you know he's over the [TS]

00:50:43   edge [TS]

00:50:44   the doctor who christmas special count [TS]

00:50:46   yeah sure there are you dr. Kunze dr. [TS]

00:50:49   whoever you have a favorite I i think i [TS]

00:50:53   think the in some ways the first david [TS]

00:50:56   tennant Christmas invasion [TS]

00:50:57   yeah it's pretty great I just I like the [TS]

00:51:00   end of it I like that the david tennant [TS]

00:51:02   sort of you know he says the world and [TS]

00:51:03   in a pair of pajamas [TS]

00:51:05   well any also it's it's his defining [TS]

00:51:06   moment right as at dr is establishing [TS]

00:51:09   why he is not Christopher Eccleston and [TS]

00:51:11   he sort of discovering it at the same [TS]

00:51:13   time I always enjoyed that our second no [TS]

00:51:17   second chance i'm gonna i'm gonna bring [TS]

00:51:19   out a charlie brown just because I I [TS]

00:51:21   thought that the Charlie Brown which we [TS]

00:51:23   we all probably loved as kids and I can [TS]

00:51:26   just tell you from my kids that it still [TS]

00:51:28   works [TS]

00:51:29   it shocks me that a cartoon from the [TS]

00:51:30   late sixties would still work on kids [TS]

00:51:32   but pretty great it works [TS]

00:51:34   the grinch still works yeah i'm not sure [TS]

00:51:37   the rank is bass stuff from the [TS]

00:51:38   seventies still work [TS]

00:51:39   no with the forever Jim Carrey right [TS]

00:51:42   action grinches scared my children it [TS]

00:51:45   put them off movies for at least a year [TS]
