57: Weird Subplots About Fondue

the incomparable podcast number 57 [TS]

  September 2011 [TS]

we're back on the uncomfortable i'm [TS]

jason smell your host and we are talking [TS]

today about this summer's superhero [TS]

motion pictures so comic book [TS]

superheroes brought to the big screen [TS]

there are a crop of them every year we [TS]

have four really i think proper comic [TS]

book superhero movies the summer and [TS]

joining me today to talk about them are [TS]

Dan Morgan hide am I Jason Monty Ashley [TS]

Monty thanks for joining us again led to [TS]

and joining me for the first time but [TS]

not the podcast Tony sindelar Tony [TS]

welcome hi I'm Jason I Jason nice to [TS]

meet you nice to sort of you know Escape [TS]

me either nice to be on a podcast with [TS]

your previous previous podcast you [TS]

appear only when Dan hosts if I noticed [TS]

that too i hereby resign as the host [TS]

  goodbye [TS]

so let's uh let's start with oh I'll say [TS]

the x-men there was an x-men movie that [TS]

was not a sequel to those 3313 there [TS]

  were three [TS]

well you can't beat you have the [TS]

wolverine one I do ya for [TS]

three-and-a-half wow the the third one [TS]

is the third one the one with the golden [TS]

gate bridge that's really terrible the [TS]

third one is better known as that yet [TS]

the one that the one directed by brett [TS]

ratner where everybody dies and its [TS]

really bad i can tell you that i watched [TS]

the three right after seeing x-men first [TS]

class and that was a mistake so I want [TS]

all three of them that week or more of [TS]

the week after that came out because it [TS]

because x-men first class was so great [TS]

that I was like I'm going to go and [TS]

consume all the other x-men movies [TS]

yeah none of their yeah let's see the [TS]

first one was kind of disappointing the [TS]

second one I thought was better but not [TS]

great my third one was horrible [TS]

see i say the first one the first one [TS]

was my favorite of the three and i [TS]

notice that you didn't say anything [TS]

about Wolverine i did i did not see [TS]

wolverine I was too frightened to see I [TS]

saw in theater is an inside again on DVD [TS]

so like how do you remember after the [TS]

first time I mean I knew what I was [TS]

getting into but it just reflects for [TS]

judgment basically so so you were driven [TS]

to these other perhaps lesser movies [TS]

because you like two x-men first class [TS]

so tell us about it why would you like [TS]

  expect for [TS]

class I really enjoyed x-men first class [TS]

i think it was just a really interesting [TS]

take on the superhero movie I think [TS]

setting it not in the present day was [TS]

interesting i think so much of superhero [TS]

movies like we're going to tell [TS]

spider-man as it is you know set in the [TS]

exact error that we're actually making [TS]

the film so setting it in the sixties [TS]

was interesting i think it may be that [TS]

the x-men characters themselves are some [TS]

of the more interesting superhero so [TS]

that was kind of made it more [TS]

  interesting [TS]

um it was also they they just had a lot [TS]

of characters that I have not already [TS]

seen their origin stories rehashed so [TS]

there was content that was that was new [TS]

iphone with the x-men movies are so many [TS]

characters that they want to put in [TS]

there that I inevitably end up spending [TS]

after seeing one of the movies a good 45 [TS]

hours reading the wikipedia articles [TS]

about all the different characters and [TS]

different continuities um but i really [TS]

enjoyed the exit the x-men first class [TS]

will be compared to some of the other [TS]

  superhero movies this summer [TS]

alright Dan Moore and you've seen every [TS]

superhero movie ever released and I [TS]

praise indeed over half of that [TS]

happening with Tony the vicinity fair [TS]

let's check what did you think about [TS]

first class I thought was pretty good [TS]

um I think it was bolstered by a number [TS]

of things including an excellent cast [TS]

they really did a great job of picking [TS]

people who end and like Tony said it was [TS]

it was an unfamiliar take a lot of these [TS]

characters for many of us you know [TS]

because we were so used to seeing you [TS]

know Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen to [TS]

the scenery with each other who are [TS]

great actors but at the same time it's a [TS]

very different feeling that we get from [TS]

watching these two you know veterans [TS]

sort of duke it out when there's all [TS]

this history that's like implicit but [TS]

not necessarily spelled out this one's [TS]

got Charles Xavier can walk and has hair [TS]

yeah I love that I love that I mean I [TS]

love seeing the parts of him that are [TS]

the flawed because you see so much of [TS]

human me in the in the later / earlier [TS]

movies where he's kind of considered to [TS]

a certain degree sort of infallible and [TS]

like not all-powerful quite but like [TS]

really really powerful and in this movie [TS]

he's still started getting to come to [TS]

  grips with his powers [TS]

he's also this really like human [TS]

character i want the scenes with him [TS]

trying to pick up the girls in the bar [TS]

when he's drunk about my comment about [TS]

how their eyes are like mutations or [TS]

whatever and I mean it was funny and [TS]

part of that you know like that credit [TS]

goes to james mcavoy who did a great job [TS]

you know bringing that character to sort [TS]

of a relatable realm i also thought you [TS]

know arguably magneto Michael fasteners [TS]

performance made him he was a really [TS]

interesting character is really complex [TS]

and I think he did a good job of showing [TS]

us that this was a guy who might [TS]

eventually become a villain but you do [TS]

much you get a better idea where he's [TS]

  coming from [TS]

and it's not just about revenge which i [TS]

think is sort of how it gets simplified [TS]

and some of the way the other movies [TS]

it's like oh he's just you know he was [TS]

he has a really terrible things onto him [TS]

and sort of heat it's it's biased him [TS]

but you see an attempt with him to try [TS]

and do the right thing that doesn't [TS]

quite pan out and he comes across as a [TS]

much more three-dimensional character to [TS]

me because he has this this relationship [TS]

and you see how it goes bad and I think [TS]

that that central dynamic especially [TS]

really sold the phone for me it wasn't [TS]

it wasn't a perfect film i might draw [TS]

out content january jones is abysmal [TS]

acting performance and otherwise really [TS]

good movie but you know overall i would [TS]

definitely put it up there is I think [TS]

either my top of my number to a close [TS]

number two out of these four out of [TS]

these are out of every movie I've ever [TS]

seen ever ever ever ever [TS]

right right empire strikes back yeah [TS]

movies starting with X and it's [TS]

definitely what I mean and you know [TS]

actually is that joke something I was [TS]

going to say was you know a lot of this [TS]

was pattern on because when the x-men [TS]

was originally written you know sort of [TS]

a Malcolm X Martin Luther King dynamic [TS]

of the peaceful nonviolent versus the [TS]

like you know it's kind of more violent [TS]

like you know resistance and i think you [TS]

get that vibe like there's a really [TS]

interesting sort of civil rights angle [TS]

and then setting in the sixties [TS]

obviously has great resonance with that [TS]

I think there is for a while but then at [TS]

the end of the movie it kind of breaks [TS]

down they have that scene where we just [TS]

stand around on the beach and says well [TS]

we're going to be good and you guys are [TS]

going to be bad from now on everybody [TS]

  pick sides [TS]

hooray let's fight they couldn't resist [TS]

turning it into a you know an action [TS]

would be really happy in their money did [TS]

  you like it [TS]

I did like it although i don't remember [TS]

much about it which so i could not like [TS]

that that much movie amnesia it happens [TS]

I remember thinking that the bug girl [TS]

was not a very good stripper it's [TS]

  important details [TS]

well she revealed her wings by turning [TS]

her back to wake room full of people who [TS]

could only didn't know she was a mutant [TS]

and then hovering three feet off the [TS]

floor or those windows tinted or [TS]

something I mean it was like a private [TS]

  room [TS]

I don't think so we could see the [TS]

audience clearly through the windows [TS]

also if you haven't seen there's a [TS]

deleted scene online or extended version [TS]

of that scene where in order to [TS]

demonstrate what he does Charles makes [TS]

her see magneto in a in a dress in drag [TS]

basically which is amusing just for [TS]

seeing Michael Fassbender and drag that [TS]

sounds like an interesting movie I I [TS]

didn't think it was so this is [TS]

  fascinating to hear this [TS]

this movie really Jason it was quite [TS]

good i would recommend it certainly I [TS]

mean what love is it freed from some of [TS]

the I mean one of the things I felt [TS]

about making money alluded to this the [TS]

the problem i had with those three x-men [TS]

movies was they had whatever 30 40 years [TS]

of characters and they kind of all just [TS]

stamp them all together and said they're [TS]

all going to school at the same time and [TS]

and so there are some characters who use [TS]

you barely glimpse like ellen page as [TS]

kitty pryde but she's basically like not [TS]

in it and a so-so it in this movie was [TS]

where they freed from the continuity and [TS]

sort of able to pick and choose and just [TS]

make stuff up and had a little bit is [TS]

there still allowed to like winking and [TS]

like you know every minor background [TS]

thing as a reference to something but [TS]

when they go around looking to hire [TS]

every mutant in the world but a runnable [TS]

yeah they run across Wolverine who is [TS]

already an adult and hanging out in a [TS]

  bar [TS]

yes but the best cameo possibly ever in [TS]

a movie because he gets one line and it [TS]

is and it's this it's the only it's the [TS]

  only f-bombs potter movie [TS]

well if you're gonna have a an f-bomb [TS]

your people now have a Wolverine say you [TS]

know someone someone commented on before [TS]

I felt like oh you know this movie is [TS]

great just for like the best camera of [TS]

  all time and I didn't it didn't i didn't [TS]

see it coming and didn't get spoiled so [TS]

when I saw that you know definitely in [TS]

  our theater anyways [TS]

lots of people are cracking up at that [TS]

but they do pick and choose a bit in [TS]

terms of like if you are actually [TS]

familiar with the original account new [TS]

the x-men it's not the original group of [TS]

the x-men you know they sort of all [TS]

right right because they kind of stole [TS]

that you know they move that stuff [TS]

forward and in and compressed it all and [TS]

mix it around in the x-men movie so it's [TS]

not like Angel beast marveled at all [TS]

you have be likely you don't have you [TS]

don't have to have site you have in a [TS]

weird movie of Cyclops his brother [TS]

although that's never alluded to [TS]

yeah which is I thought Howard is [TS]

someone who ya have X in it but the end [TS]

he's named Alex summers but like you [TS]

never they never make any reference that [TS]

he has a brother anything which is odd [TS]

and then you get a couple other random [TS]

ones i'm familiar with the x-men up to [TS]

about 1990 and I didn't recognize half [TS]

of the muezzin hear which I liked [TS]

because that means they don't come in [TS]

with a lot of extra baggage [TS]

I really liked the first x-men movie but [TS]

it took me a while to get through the [TS]

fact that although she's called rogue [TS]

she's not rogue she's effectively kitty [TS]

pryde storyline right in that situation [TS]

the comic book knowledge kind of gotten [TS]

my way of enjoying the movie here there [TS]

are people have never heard of so eh [TS]

  what the heck [TS]

and then I don't know which was going to [TS]

die suddenly there's always trouble with [TS]

  counter-programming that's a good that's [TS]

a feature not a bug not about any other [TS]

thoughts about x-men first class I can't [TS]

wait to see x-men second-class justice [TS]

class this is classics men don't have to [TS]

make it better each time I am a little [TS]

confused what they do with the ongoing [TS]

like x-men continuity because it already [TS]

doesn't join with even you know the [TS]

x-men wolverine movie that came out not [TS]

too long ago and they're making of their [TS]

making a Wolverine sequel to yes vote [TS]

  for reading [TS]

yea which was originally thought I am [TS]

one of the most bizarre move that ever [TS]

was originally supposed to be directed [TS]

by darren aronofsky think hasn't stepped [TS]

down but I couldn't you know what i read [TS]

that i read that story like four times [TS]

like really but I think you might yeah I [TS]

think he came to his senses is my pitch [TS]

that fast in the wolverine and the [TS]

furious he did direct you [TS]

Hugh Jackman so I think that was the [TS]

connection is that he directed him and [TS]

media and the fountain right yeah yeah [TS]

so and and darren aronofsky directing [TS]

Hugh Jackman and found and wolverine [TS]

wolverine makes pretty and I I have a [TS]

bad feeling about that movie because [TS]

it's it seems to be taking the storyline [TS]

that drove me away from the character of [TS]

wolverine and help drive me away from [TS]

the x-men which is hey Wolverines cool [TS]

let's have him go to Japan and fights [TS]

various sort of samurai ninja people for [TS]

  months [TS]

yeah that'll be great you didn't like [TS]

the wolverine and Kitty Pryde graphic [TS]

novel that was a classic well anything [TS]

with kitty pryde i will i will be there [TS]

but the whole like he gets he's got a [TS]

girlfriend he marries her whatever but [TS]

she's in too deep with the with the the [TS]

mobsters in Japan and its just oh I you [TS]

know beforehand that well that's [TS]

apparently what this livery noir I would [TS]

watch that and then he stabs a thousand [TS]

inches pray with ya with his clothing [TS]

and just can't get rid of them they're [TS]

  like rats cockroaches [TS]

yeah all right we all just any ninjas [TS]

were listening haha good point [TS]

our topic today is inches alright we [TS]

will move on then to movie number two in [TS]

are sweeping detailed map maybe if you [TS]

look at at the superhero movies from the [TS]

  summer [TS]

how about Thor let's talk about Thor i [TS]

have a Couture all right Monty sharing [TS]

your opinions on Thor please [TS]

I watched it with an open mind and i [TS]

still think it's really really stupid [TS]

that they made them aliens [TS]

I mean that is it how do you even mean [TS]

it's like an arthur c clarke thing [TS]

really how do you tell the difference [TS]

between aliens and like super powerful [TS]

beings like or God's basically well [TS]

these aliens have wormholes and [TS]

  spaceships and telescopes [TS]

I mean but I can't you just pretend [TS]

  they're magic [TS]

I would have liked to but they kept [TS]

putting planets into the storyline it's [TS]

like a Highlander to whoa whoa whoa [TS]

which I don't think is a good thing to [TS]

say about any movie they couldn't just [TS]

say this is a God so okay this is an [TS]

alien but then they have characters on [TS]

earth looking through books of Norse [TS]

  mythology [TS]

and you think at some point they would [TS]

pick up that book and say have you seen [TS]

what it says here about my brother Loki [TS]

  the god of lies [TS]

oh my god what's gonna happen to me when [TS]

I fight this worm is oh is that what it [TS]

comes down to is that the alien I mean [TS]

it's not as bad as the to hear it [TS]

this is a loaded question which is that [TS]

there is a whole campaign out there that [TS]

was really upset that they made heimdal [TS]

  black when using campaign [TS]

you mean like crazy whites like this yes [TS]

on the internet surprise of all places I [TS]

didn't my time doll being black I minded [TS]

a interest Elba having to put on all [TS]

that costume and then stand there so you [TS]

could only see two inches of his eyes [TS]

and a huge effect on his voice so [TS]

there's no point in him even showing up [TS]

yeah but he was still awesome he was he [TS]

did a great job of standing there i'm [TS]

not sure i could do as well so well [TS]

obviously the answer here is that he's [TS]

black because they're aliens and not [TS]

from Scandinavia right i mean their gods [TS]

who cares what color yeah like Logan the [TS]

grim was in this and he was an Asian [TS]

gentleman of some variety and I didn't [TS]

see anybody complaining about that [TS]

no you're not going to the right chat [TS]

rooms are ya listenin he ok [TS]

other thoughts about the word am I i [TS]

actually enjoyed for um I was not bother [TS]

i have never been a Thor reader i don't [TS]

i really know very little of the [TS]

mythology behind for i mean i know some [TS]

of the mythology mythology behind door [TS]

but uh is not the comic book i know i [TS]

mean i thought they did a good job with [TS]

um there are a lot of things I thought [TS]

they they could have been done a lot [TS]

more like I you know they played him is [TS]

very much like a fish out of water water [TS]

character which I think could have [TS]

easily been overdone but instead they [TS]

just give it kind of a he kind of [TS]

doesn't care like I love that he just [TS]

walks around like he owns the place and [TS]

there's you know there's a scene where [TS]

they're in a in a diner or something and [TS]

you know he drinks a cup of coffee and [TS]

then when he's done with it he smashed [TS]

the coffee cup on the floor goes for a [TS]

coffee or something you know like he [TS]

played I thought they'd chris hemsworth [TS]

did a good job of sort of playing that [TS]

  character to the hilt [TS]

um and making him very you know arrogant [TS]

and kind of in need of that come up and [TS]

that he that he gets towards the end [TS]

and I think they played a couple of good [TS]

moments 44 comedy he repeatedly gets hit [TS]

by a car which is actually music and of [TS]

course now the apartment in it and I [TS]

refused to say anything bad about I [TS]

still don't think there's going to be a [TS]

very good King once he gets to be king [TS]

well and the other issue with this is [TS]

that much like Captain America which [TS]

we'll discuss in a moment they end very [TS]

similarly don't think in the sense of [TS]

  not really ending [TS]

oh they're both adventurous setups yes [TS]

they are both very clearly like well I [TS]

lost that girl i really like the end [TS]

this as they Sarah longingly through [TS]

some place where they're stuck you know [TS]

like that they didn't want to be I guess [TS]

there's no time for romantic subplot in [TS]

the next movie with all these other [TS]

movies crammed into it too [TS]

yeah probably not but don't worry there [TS]

will be 42 and and also may i say my [TS]

favorite random thing about for which [TS]

was the being directed by kenneth [TS]

branagh that's the first time i heard [TS]

that that's like darren aronofsky [TS]

  depicting foolery [TS]

yeah it's not like they're going to [TS]

directing room to carry its get a prada [TS]

  demanded Shakespeare's a little [TS]

different war it is a little strange of [TS]

all I would never have guessed and a [TS]

couple of that would be had its own good [TS]

cameo jeremy renner appears briefly as [TS]

Hawkeye osaka and I really one of my [TS]

favorite sort of random characters who I [TS]

don't think is actually a comic [TS]

continuity character in any way is up [TS]

Clark Gregg's SHIELD agent who I just [TS]

really enjoy Coulson brightly they keep [TS]

sending them around to do crazy things [TS]

and he gets he gets a much bigger role [TS]

in this movie than any of the ones to [TS]

date he's not just like yeah the [TS]

henchmen and I really i enjoyed him or [TS]

hammer finder and iron man 2i think his [TS]

entire job was to go [TS]

hey found a hammer right and so they [TS]

sort of expand upon that here and he's [TS]

actually like in charge of this whole [TS]

field installation alright Tony what did [TS]

you think of four against I was a little [TS]

disappointed with Dora and I was not [TS]

familiar with the source material ahead [TS]

  of time but it [TS]

I don't know it just all felt like kind [TS]

of a chore and setting up for Avengers [TS]

on which some people might say the same [TS]

about Captain America but enjoyed that [TS]

along with this i don't know i just i [TS]

  felt like it was [TS]

was there a lot of sections that were [TS]

really boring there's a lot of just cgi [TS]

fight scenes with them fighting you know [TS]

prostrations for forever of it felt [TS]

tedious i guess they were just there [TS]

were all these characters in it that [TS]

we're not very interesting or we didn't [TS]

get to spend enough time with them to [TS]

find out what about the might be [TS]

interesting having already has his kind [TS]

of his his three friends that the [TS]

Warriors Three we don't really get to [TS]

find out too much about them so that it [TS]

kind of felt like they're in here [TS]

because they're part of the earth or [TS]

continuity so we need to maintain them [TS]

as being here but you're not going to [TS]

actually find out much about them in [TS]

this movie and maybe you won't even see [TS]

them again adventures because there's [TS]

going to be a million other characters [TS]

and adventures to worry about so i don't [TS]

know i wasn't as impressed with this one [TS]

is some of it as a as with x-men first [TS]

class or other movies that summer is [TS]

tore himself a compelling character I [TS]

mean he's got he's got the Marvel thing [TS]

in that he's sort of at you know he's [TS]

outcast and all that but he's he's a god [TS]

he's got all these powers and I I don't [TS]

believe they did the full-on kind of [TS]

Thor story where he's like a guy who [TS]

thinks he's a like a doctor with a bad [TS]

leg and only you know the thor and they [TS]

didn't do that or the comic is like the [TS]

Hulk and he sort of like a guy who just [TS]

discovers that he can transform into a [TS]

god and in the movie he's just like [TS]

chris hemsworth right he's like hey I'm [TS]

cool i'm thorry the government under the [TS]

whole time is right although he gets he [TS]

gets to rob his package you know Anthony [TS]

Hopkins takes his powers away until this [TS]

is your key still kind of badass [TS]

compared to your every still like a [TS]

  giant giant guy [TS]

yeah yeah but he said he's not not as [TS]

not as bad as he is when he's like that [TS]

is hammers and so does that character [TS]

workers he just too awesome and perfect [TS]

to to be believable as kind of a [TS]

character you cannot replace it felt [TS]

like he was like Superman without there [TS]

being any Clark Kent right well he says [TS]

he's just awesome all the time thats [TS]

that's kinda boring shortlist of these [TS]

like he's awesome and doesn't you know [TS]

doesn't know how to cross the street [TS]

Oh shortly before I saw thor i read [TS]

about 10 years worth of the Avengers on [TS]

my iPad and Thor is a super super boring [TS]

  character [TS]

yeah like originally like you say he's [TS]

he's got a alternate identity as a [TS]

  cripple doctor [TS]

any of these ever away from his hammer [TS]

for more than 30 seconds he reverts but [TS]

unlike Superman he never goes back to [TS]

that character at least in the Avengers [TS]

they don't have a lot of time for that [TS]

so it's always and here comes Thor to [TS]

beat something up say something flowery [TS]

  and fly off again [TS]

yes no he's not he's not that [TS]

interesting I mean for comic he can be [TS]

more interesting but I i agree with you [TS]

and the most memorable issue or run of [TS]

Thor that I certainly that I can recall [TS]

is the one where somebody else were an [TS]

alien actual alien gets the hammer which [TS]

is beta ray bill in the Walt Simonson [TS]

run where an alien ends up being worthy [TS]

of the powers of Thor and you got this [TS]

guy who isn't for and who's like a space [TS]

alien who who gets the hammer and starts [TS]

to do stuff with it and it's sort of [TS]

like hey I've got an awesome idea of how [TS]

we can improve Thor know Thor I see the [TS]

way you say about that and again I [TS]

didn't read much more but that's kind of [TS]

the way I feel about the whole which is [TS]

like he's a and the reason that the [TS]

previous Hulk movie I haven't done very [TS]

little for me was that you know the Hulk [TS]

himself as a character is extremely on [TS]

interesting which is to say you can't [TS]

talk woman only knows that i do is smash [TS]

things there you've got you've got Bruce [TS]

Banner who was really kind of tormented [TS]

and you know you can do some things with [TS]

that may be but you're right it is it is [TS]

a problematic character but i always [TS]

thought that Thor was even more [TS]

  problematic [TS]

yeah see I i think i enjoyed this [TS]

product this this version of Thor more [TS]

than that just because he is in that way [TS]

he's kind of unlike a lot of the other [TS]

superheroes I mean who have that like oh [TS]

god I've got to balance these two [TS]

identities were hanging I kind of [TS]

enjoyed the fact that he's just like 3-4 [TS]

days like you know what I'm four I'm [TS]

just gonna go with that he was a big [TS]

cheerful lummox which is a nice change [TS]

I guess yeah i mean he's not your Indian [TS]

and I think you know there's something [TS]

entertaining about watching him just [TS]

sort of go through the motions of being [TS]

like I'm just this this is who I am my [TS]

god I'm used to being a god there's not [TS]

really a lot of identity questioning in [TS]

that and you know i am that that's [TS]

different from like there's the feels [TS]

like a lot of the other superheroes have [TS]

so much angst it's like I really i can [TS]

really drive out all that like oh god [TS]

maybe I don't want to [TS]

powers as I have to fight evil man that [TS]

really sucks i just want to be a [TS]

teenager and do my homework [TS]

the only thing I liked about the [TS]

Fantastic Four movie was that chris [TS]

evans seemed cheerful about having [TS]

superpowers who I I could fly and burn [TS]

things ya know I i I'm with you there [TS]

and that was those were both really bad [TS]

movies but i agree with you about chris [TS]

evans and we'll get to him in a minute [TS]

but one question I have for you guys [TS]

since you saw it and I didn't is on a [TS]

previous podcast i talked about TV show [TS]

that I really liked called Cupid with [TS]

jeremy piven and he's he's a God who is [TS]

cast out to earth and he keeps saying [TS]

all on cupid i'm a god love and they all [TS]

say oh you're a crazy person [TS]

so is there any of that in this movie [TS]

where the doors like hey you're [TS]

essentially here and there like that's [TS]

like the middle our check their result [TS]

there's a whole lot of him claiming to [TS]

be thor and people basically this means [TS]

that he's a mental patient alright yeah [TS]

and yet you're doing him a favor you [TS]

like looking at a time just like a big [TS]

giant guy like you find in the desert [TS]

and like he seems disoriented and like [TS]

out of touch with reality i'm not gonna [TS]

bring him home he hit him with a car [TS]

first like you know they felt disaster [TS]

it's like driving a way to get with a [TS]

lot of cars he does it I don't know I [TS]

did the pratfalls just did it for me I [TS]

think he's so big he has a gravity field [TS]

at power of the gods or aliens or yeah [TS]

although i'll agree that they nobody [TS]

seeing through Loki was pretty pathetic [TS]

hello Loki got allies that was all [TS]

Odin's fault by the way he explicit this [TS]

guy's the worst father ever in this [TS]

  movie [TS]

he takes us to sign that says lower your [TS]

real king material you're gonna be king [TS]

of where your heavy guard Asgard of [TS]

scienter a dimension or that's something [TS]

anyway you Loki you're a terrible [TS]

  disappointment [TS]

well I set my bow so you're adopted [TS]

don't forget angle let me show you this [TS]

room where we keep all the things that [TS]

you could use against me that was not as [TS]

  best strategic decision [TS]

anthony hopkins what were you thinking [TS]

he got to get paid [TS]

get ok let's move on and since I know [TS]

everybody is dying to talk about Green [TS]

Lantern let's talk about Green Lantern [TS]

who did anybody here Jason [TS]

did anybody see it Daniel shot this [TS]

isn't funny and I told me about that you [TS]

see god yes it's always good to have a [TS]

buddy it is because i think we're going [TS]

to see them by myself [TS]

ok I won't tell me about Green Lantern [TS]

Green Lantern you know as bad as they [TS]

  say Dan [TS]

  I you know I i will say it's not a good [TS]

  movie [TS]

let's not always well we can agree on [TS]

  its is green [TS]

  it's there there's a went there is a [TS]

lantern um you know what lighting things [TS]

up right I'm able to say that is in [TS]

prior to stay and in blackest night no I [TS]

i will say that is definitely not a good [TS]

  movie [TS]

however that said it is not an awful [TS]

movie I've seen considerably worse [TS]

movies remix and anybody who says that [TS]

this is a terrible movie hasn't clearly [TS]

never seen mortal kombat annihilation is [TS]

all in 24 or Fantastic Four [TS]

yeah i mean it really it's mediocre and [TS]

in that sense maybe disappointing in its [TS]

mediocre earnest I think mediocrity is [TS]

the word you're looking for there but ok [TS]

in me mediocracy now I'm that's a [TS]

different thing I i will say that one [TS]

thing that I get kind of like about this [TS]

movie is that they they did spend a lot [TS]

of time off of Earth I mean that way I [TS]

guess it's somewhat similar to a tooth [TS]

or but I it was kind of cool to see the [TS]

entirety like the green lantern corps [TS]

and basically you know tons of different [TS]

random looking aliens and they did you [TS]

know pull out a lot of stops there i [TS]

mean granted yes it's all CGI whatever [TS]

but it was kind of interesting to see [TS]

that spin on a superhero is decidedly [TS]

more galactic in his point of view than [TS]

just like oh it's earth man earth in [TS]

trouble again there's a birth [TS]

although that they do sort of fall back [TS]

into that trap but you know there's [TS]

there's some good stuff in there [TS]

although I know Tony will want to talk [TS]

about his his favorite scene from the [TS]

movie which is where children beats up a [TS]

bunch of guys who is already caused a [TS]

  booster shot [TS]

  what a journey it's a big achievement i [TS]

did not understand that scene except he [TS]

  he's a he's a test pilot and a kind of a [TS]

questionable and because he crashes an [TS]

airplane and so like the project gets [TS]

cancelled and so like all the friends [TS]

from the the you know the aircraft [TS]

company or not as hard or become is not [TS]

friends and like beat him up outside a [TS]

bar which kind of unclear whether [TS]

hanging outside the bar so they just [TS]

jumped him and he uses his green lantern [TS]

powers and beat the crap out of it i [TS]

mean actually i have now they have no [TS]

jobs and then being up Jordan ladies and [TS]

gentlemen the Green Lantern i'll also [TS]

that he does i do appreciate that there [TS]

was like despite the fact that you so [TS]

  the love interest here [TS]

blake lively is a you know they've known [TS]

each other since they were kids I do [TS]

appreciate at least that that he's sort [TS]

of mask doesn't really hold up past [TS]

about 30 seconds when she actually liked [TS]

meet him face-to-face because that's one [TS]

of those things right with all [TS]

superheroes you're like Clark Kent he's [TS]

got glasses great whatever like you [TS]

  can't tell the difference [TS]

I kind of wish comic book movies would [TS]

just do those straight or not to them [TS]

though like why give them the mask and [TS]

then make fun of it [TS]

can't you just be a sincere movie for [TS]

once it's not that they make fun of it [TS]

so much is like it's a you know it's a [TS]

mask and she she recognizes him because [TS]

she knows him and they do reference the [TS]

mask just being like only four cases [TS]

where the identity needs to be protected [TS]

because like what he doesn't wear it at [TS]

all none of them wear it when they're [TS]

off planet right like that matter so I [TS]

thought they did a decent job with that [TS]

I thought they did you see job with the [TS]

alien stuff the plot is you know fairly [TS]

forgettable as far as I by the way if [TS]

you're ever introduced to a guy whose [TS]

name is semester oh yeah who want to [TS]

think that can go bad might not be there [TS]

he's okay in the movie yeah well until [TS]

the end until you absolutely have [TS]

setting up for the Green Lantern to [TS]

movie that may never get made it his [TS]

twin brother genuino uh-huh gets no love [TS]

so let's move on enough of this green [TS]

lantern craziness let's move on to [TS]

captain america has everybody seen [TS]

captain america and africa right captain [TS]

canada way better and i also see Captain [TS]

America with you yes you did but some [TS]

three out of four the skeptic buddy [TS]

  system in action [TS]

it's good to see it's safe it's safe [TS]

that way I thought this was great what [TS]

did you guys think i really liked [TS]

  captain america [TS]

yeah love it yeah yeah I gave it a big [TS]

  thumbs up [TS]

I enjoyed it it's so Rocketeer director [TS]

yeah so Johnson to Johnson i love it and [TS]

i know you love the rocketeer so it I [TS]

one of the things I loved about it was [TS]

its period you know just the whole [TS]

committing to the whole period thing [TS]

that it's the colors are very retro and [TS]

the kind of faded a little bit and you [TS]

know obviously it's styled as a world [TS]

war two thing and but even in the tone [TS]

  it's a it's a it's a world war two movie [TS]

there's some stuff in it's kind of corny [TS]

and you know the same time like well of [TS]

course it's corey its sub it's a world [TS]

war two movie it's fine that it's corny [TS]

because it's from a different period and [TS]

you know I just loved seeing something [TS]

that felt different because it was said [TS]

in this different period in it and and [TS]

they could do some stuff that you don't [TS]

normally see in a in a comic book [TS]

  superhero movie [TS]

well that whole like the whole thing [TS]

with the USO for example i thought was [TS]

great like you know where they have them [TS]

  doing this [TS]

selling the war bonds basically yeah you [TS]

know i mean it made sense right because [TS]

despite the fact that you do have this [TS]

guy who is kind of like proven to be [TS]

this in a superhero whatever is like he [TS]

doesn't know what he's doing he's not [TS]

  he's not trained [TS]

no they don't train them they whisk him [TS]

away and immediately use them as a [TS]

propaganda propaganda yeah i mean III [TS]

agree that the period stuff and it's [TS]

interesting that both of the two you [TS]

know the most successful superheroes of [TS]

them your movies of the year our period [TS]

right movies as well that was really [TS]

interesting and Captain America it's [TS]

hard to do captain america today right [TS]

  you know [TS]

oh yeah it means something very [TS]

different yeah and and I think that [TS]

  that's you know I think there's [TS]

  something potentially really interesting [TS]

stuff in bringing Kimmy from the 40 like [TS]

the 1940s version of Steve Rogers into [TS]

the modern day right like there's some [TS]

really interesting culture class there [TS]

and of course with what with all the [TS]

  stuff that the crazy [TS]

stuff that Marvel's done the last few [TS]

years with its comic book line you know [TS]

it's the there's a lot of potential for [TS]

telling an interesting story about this [TS]

guy who is used to this [TS]

hey i'm from this area of raw patriotism [TS]

and now i'm in the modern day where [TS]

things really aren't so black and white [TS]

but i agree i thought that the they did [TS]

a fantastic job of capturing Aaron [TS]

  remaining extremely authentic and [TS]

honestly I gotta come down to I really [TS]

find Chris Evans likable he's just he's [TS]

really something about that you know and [TS]

he has actor I find him just really you [TS]

know fun it was not only my favorite [TS]

part of Fantastic Four who's my favorite [TS]

part of the movie the losers which is [TS]

yellow sleeves are voices he's the best [TS]

character in that and that having read [TS]

the complex dude like he was also [TS]

definitely the best actor in that prison [TS]

for jeffrey dean morgan who is like you [TS]

  can't afford George Clooney that's it's [TS]

  next Monday [TS]

what do you think I liked it a lot I [TS]

really i'm a sucker for any movie with [TS]

an old-timey a world's fair in it huh [TS]

that's a is that a lot of movies [TS]

well so far no but there's nobody like [TS]

you get out how disconcerting pandering [TS]

to me it's an emergency on rua I'm i one [TS]

thing i liked a lot was that they [TS]

justified him running around in the [TS]

actual captain america costume and [TS]

didn't really feel like pandering like [TS]

they actually recreated the first [TS]

captain america cover where he Sox hit [TS]

there on the jaw right yeah that's [TS]

awesome without him actually punching [TS]

Hitler because apparently we can't have [TS]

them actually fighting Nazis we get it [TS]

was there was a disappointing recognizes [TS]

yeah what does this is an interesting [TS]

decision they made as they made it about [TS]

Hydra which is like you know the Nazis [TS]

are bad and the real war is happening [TS]

and and I liked that they did he meet [TS]

with the real GIS who are fighting the [TS]

real war because it you could you could [TS]

almost the little world war two if you [TS]

said well captain america to care of [TS]

everything so instead they've got the [TS]

the real war happening and then they've [TS]

sort of superimposed this other war [TS]

which is Hydra against this special part [TS]

  of the US government [TS]

according to the internet they were [TS]

gonna have two cameos that didn't make [TS]

the movie one was magneto in a prison [TS]

camp that captain america fries and one [TS]

was Wolverine just out there fighting as [TS]

  a soldier huh [TS]

and I would have been interesting well [TS]

it is funny that there's a striking [TS]

absence of actual Nazis in a movie [TS]

that's all about World War two [TS]

they had not ceased in the x-men movie [TS]

like they're worse than Nazis but the [TS]

Hydra is even worse than there were [TS]

Nazis you know so that was a little bit [TS]

strange but you know i like the scene [TS]

with the GI where he finally decides [TS]

they basically they don't like his stick [TS]

his stick works back home but he comes [TS]

to entertain the troops and that they're [TS]

not interested they want to see the [TS]

girls because they think he's just a [TS]

pretty boy which he is really just a guy [TS]

in a costume is not actually fighting [TS]

and and that was great because it gave [TS]

it some of that realism of like you know [TS]

the war though as we know what is [TS]

happening and now we're going to go back [TS]

he's gonna go back off and find hugo [TS]

weaving in his that's why I really [TS]

really like that baby you know Steve [TS]

Rogers as a character right like he [TS]

could very easily be bland and be the [TS]

all-american guy but I like that he's [TS]

you know he's very clearly this i mean [TS]

if you want to call me naive or [TS]

idealistic sure I'm in a very very much [TS]

is like I want to fight because I want [TS]

to do my my part [TS]

PS bullies right i mean that's the right [TS]

part of him getting beaten up and why [TS]

Stanley Tucci chooses him which I liked [TS]

you know that he's like--he's and i love [TS]

that I actually really liked that line [TS]

which is the you know the weak man [TS]

knowing the value of strength like its [TS]

kind of be you know with great power [TS]

comes great responsibility angle but I I [TS]

like that and I like Stanley Tucci a lot [TS]

he's great in that absolutely is sort of [TS]

bitter i thought he was Gene Wilder for [TS]

  half the move [TS]

  hahaha that seems unlikely [TS]

well one cycle Loompas have him go we [TS]

had better although I have to say that [TS]

my my favorite see my favorite little [TS]

throwaway seen in the beginning that is [TS]

I want any chases the Nazi guys that are [TS]

  the Hydra agent down [TS]

always running down the street and the [TS]

guy takes the kid and throws the kid in [TS]

the water and the kid goes I got him [TS]

that did make me crack up I really like [TS]

they spent so much time with steve [TS]

rogers establishing him as a character [TS]

before making him captain america [TS]

because it's so easy with the captain [TS]

america origin to say he's the perfect [TS]

soldier because he's huge and muscular [TS]

and blonde but they actually yeah well [TS]

either way I found surprisingly not see [TS]

when you put it that way like someone [TS]

else will know that's that's I think one [TS]

of the great tricks in the in the [TS]

creation of that character in the [TS]

forties was having him be not somebody [TS]

who was always the golden boy but [TS]

actually appreciated being the underdog [TS]

and you know with a clever way to have a [TS]

blonde super strong character who still [TS]

you know represents something something [TS]

different and yeah that was also kind of [TS]

amazing what they did with the effects [TS]

to make Chris Chris Evans actually [TS]

looked like a scrawny short guy from you [TS]

know from Brooklyn is a couple shots [TS]

where it looks not right but I'm gonna [TS]

spray it works great yeah most part i [TS]

can look beyond it when his face was [TS]

  that about three-quarters angle [TS]

sometimes it didn't quite line up right [TS]

which might have been because I was [TS]

staring at his face the whole time [TS]

thinking how they do that how they do [TS]

that Oh his chin is wrong [TS]

got him know they were ever really bold [TS]

with it i mean i think that's the end of [TS]

work that they didn't just like have it [TS]

in one scene and then he puts on his [TS]

shirt and he's tall and muscular but [TS]

let's not speak of it [TS]

yeah and it looks really i mean you know [TS]

it looks very convincing you know as the [TS]

effects ago I think and they get some [TS]

you know we do get some time with some [TS]

of the secondary characters always all [TS]

this point i would like to have more [TS]

time with some of the the Howling [TS]

Commandos who i think are our kind of [TS]

fun and but we get very brief mouth with [TS]

them except where with with poor Bucky [TS]

do you think that's Nick Furies father [TS]

  with the new lineup [TS]

I think it's got to be right because it [TS]

was originally Nick Fury yeah but [TS]

there's no way that's the same Nick Fury [TS]

is we have now probably nor is it [TS]

ah well da yeah no it's not [TS]

anyway that's it that's all settled all [TS]

right then no speculation need no I did [TS]

what what do you think about how to [TS]

handle Bucky I thought that was an [TS]

interesting way to try and and tell the [TS]

Bucky story without obviously it doesn't [TS]

happen the way it happens in the into [TS]

comics where it sort of bucky dies and [TS]

Captain America gets frozen instead they [TS]

sort of split those up but you know I [TS]

knew it was coming because Peter Bucky's [TS]

not gonna market but he's not going to [TS]

make it kids so you know it's but but [TS]

what do you think about how the handles [TS]

are all old Bucky I mean there is a I [TS]

mean there is a shock value to it still [TS]

like that in that brief moment right [TS]

when he when he falls and you're like oh [TS]

my god like oh ok well i guess that kind [TS]

of makes sense but like you know III [TS]

don't know I until your best move it [TS]

yeah I mean there's something to it it [TS]

was more realistic i like the [TS]

relationship because it was more [TS]

realistic than the comic book where he's [TS]

worried sidekick lucky discovers that [TS]

captain america is Steve Rogers because [TS]

he goes into his tent while he's [TS]

changing had steve says what you got me [TS]

  kid [TS]

hey you want to go help me fight Nazis [TS]

incredibly dangerous fashion is your you [TS]

shown that you're capable of wandering [TS]

into attend so no this was instead of [TS]

his buddy who is his buddy but is [TS]

actually capable of fighting and that [TS]

was a nice thing and then he meets them [TS]

again and so now he's a you know now [TS]

he's captain america and you're right [TS]

that wasn't that happens awfully fast [TS]

where suddenly they're like part of a [TS]

crack team with the power & commandos [TS]

and they're going on a mission that was [TS]

that was a real quick turnaround [TS]

yeah i mean i don't know how much you [TS]

can do in a movie that's already you [TS]

know got a lot packed in yet and they I [TS]

mean they they got some-some you know [TS]

not like super well-known actors but [TS]

there are some notable actors among the [TS]

commandos including Neil MacDonald yeah [TS]

as a dum-dum Dugan and a couple of the [TS]

other guys to in there but you know [TS]

there's only so much time you can spend [TS]

in the home and I'm in a movie that's [TS]

about Captain America right i'd like to [TS]

see I want to see how the 80-year old [TS]

versions of them in adventures of a [TS]

Howlin commandoes movie alright that'll [TS]

be dad that was awesome i would totally [TS]

watch that I would've been perfectly [TS]

happy to watch an hour of [TS]

captain america and the Howling [TS]

Commandos busting up Nazis and save the [TS]

red skull thing to the next movie [TS]

yeah yeah yeah I hear that but you gotta [TS]

you gotta get him into the you gotta get [TS]

into the modern-day yeah that was part [TS]

of a the thing going on here they need [TS]

to tell this whole story because they [TS]

want him to be in the adventures and you [TS]

know I I liked how they handled it I [TS]

thought that the end of the movie was [TS]

actually pretty cool although you know [TS]

did didn't they know when he went [TS]

missing couldn't have found a baseball [TS]

game from from the next year [TS]

come on call the Hall of Famer come on [TS]

shield you can do better than that you [TS]

  can do better [TS]

col de Havel's order to grow up like [TS]

that unless I mean he's he's frozen in [TS]

ice it's like you can keep it frozen ice [TS]

for a couple weeks like get the details [TS]

or did you know yeah let's go all gently [TS]

yeah and if you're going to and if [TS]

you're going to keep him in a special [TS]

hotel convince a judge cell doesn't [TS]

really have to be a block off times [TS]

where yeah yeah with no locked doors [TS]

yeah that was and that's a relatable [TS]

locked doors that is a really cool scene [TS]

yeah where he runs out into modern times [TS]

square but but it's not practical [TS]

really i think perhaps that seems to not [TS]

have been in the commercials [TS]

Oh was it out yeah there's a shot where [TS]

you see Captain America standing in [TS]

modern day times square that they had in [TS]

the TV commercial for the movie came out [TS]

well you get the framing story to write [TS]

because it opens with them finding that [TS]

ship right yeah yeah I'm being like oh [TS]

hey someone's frozen ice someone was [TS]

this shield where guys start on it [TS]

no no that would Tony words you and I [TS]

betting like before they really look but [TS]

yeah we thought it would get there going [TS]

like wife something away and there's [TS]

gonna be like he's gonna stick up [TS]

yeah there were introduced was because [TS]

there were no they don't but there were [TS]

no not so you know the the real Marvel [TS]

tie in here I think is the the fact that [TS]

although it's never really gone into is [TS]

that it's tony stark's dad yet inventor [TS]

of all these crazy gadgets for the for [TS]

the u.s. government and the guy kind of [TS]

a the guy who plays a much like tony is [TS]

reminiscent of the Tony Stark character [TS]

from the iron man movie so I don't know [TS]

yeah sadly dominic cooper who I do like [TS]

  you can't [TS]

it is an ambulance guy doing a Brooklyn [TS]

  accent [TS]

very strange for after i did like the [TS]

revelation that the whole stark family [TS]

is super fun to be around [TS]

yeah that party for good it's a party [TS]

with the stark boys drinking flying you [TS]

know that kind of invention having weird [TS]

subplots about fondue that was bizarre [TS]

oh yeah I enjoy it i enjoyed i mean i [TS]

gotta say i also enjoyed a Hayley Atwell [TS]

as Peggy Carter I thought that you know [TS]

she wasn't she wasn't a very you know [TS]

she wasn't a totally flat you know [TS]

heroin right she had some associates and [TS]

issues quirky and they made her English [TS]

which I thought was fun that she's an [TS]

English captain america like some [TS]

English girl like Captain how could you [TS]

what about our American girls they're [TS]

not good enough well I'll or allies i [TS]

like their complete refusal to explain [TS]

that one guy in the movie even said [TS]

you're British what's going on she [TS]

punches him that moving on anybody else [TS]

who brings it up i'm positive you to [TS]

hear me audience just shut up and watch [TS]

the movie so I'm one of the things as a [TS]

parent I was impressed with this movie [TS]

because i feel like this is a superhero [TS]

movie that i could easily shoot my kids [TS]

who are poor are 10 and 7 you know some [TS]

superhero movies are violent in a way [TS]

and scary in a way that I I find kind of [TS]

an unpleasant or at least questionable [TS]

for for younger kids and although this [TS]

movie is a pg-13 and it does have a guy [TS]

getting chopped up by a propeller and it [TS]

  feels like 50 guys [TS]

yeah they kill lots of guys and yet I [TS]

didn't it didn't actually feel you know [TS]

Corey or or I mean doesn't really take [TS]

write a famous star wars they take the [TS]

star wars cheat to write which is ever [TS]

you know pretty much all the guys he [TS]

kills are in like the bouncer and get up [TS]

yeah they hydrate get up right so the [TS]

they're not really people they could be [TS]

robots that you don't know you don't [TS]

know and the guy and the guy who goes [TS]

through the propeller the the airplane [TS]

propeller you know he it's like watching [TS]

a mist come out of a vaporizer you know [TS]

it's just straight it's just an in-kind [TS]

missed it's not like chunks so it means [TS]

I i found the scene and raiders of the [TS]

lost ark is much more kind of disturbing [TS]

  with the ball [TS]

Lattimore yes right like it's it's you [TS]

know that's that's left up to your [TS]

imagination which is worse yeah this is [TS]

a cgi going through a cgi propeller and [TS]

  turning into you know [TS]

CTIC Jeb Bush see I thought it was odd [TS]

that this is one of the few superheroes [TS]

who just carries a gun around and [TS]

actually shoot people with it [TS]

yeah it even the Phantom are the only [TS]

movie superheroes I can have who do that [TS]

that's good good point he does for a guy [TS]

carrying a gun and maybe finds a lot of [TS]

excuses to punch people and slammed with [TS]

the shield and yeah just get us really [TS]

stop so that people get like you know [TS]

knocked out and things like that so [TS]

there's you know there's a lot of [TS]

shooting he does other stuff too i'm not [TS]

saying he's just mr. gotten that but you [TS]

just have the gun with him [TS]

yeah i mean the rocketeer had a gun to I [TS]

don't think he shoot anybody with it [TS]

  either [TS]

yeah so so Dan you feel some some of [TS]

that Rocketeer vibe I certainly is [TS]

especially with the open the girl 2 I [TS]

was like oh joe johnston he likes having [TS]

that data that romantic romantic figure [TS]

who looks because because I looked at [TS]

her and I was like yes she pushes a lot [TS]

of the same buttons jennifer connelly [TS]

does the right and and they've got that [TS]

same sort of dynamic where it's you know [TS]

he's kind of a little bit bumbling [TS]

despite being right rear oh yeah she's [TS]

got it over on him on that score right [TS]

right Andy you know and that he's you [TS]

know it's kind of accidental sort of you [TS]

know he's becoming a superhero in some [TS]

ways um but yeah I know there's there's [TS]

a lot there and I think you know Justin [TS]

did it as good a job you know capturing [TS]

that the world of this you know the [TS]

world war 2 as he did with the thirties [TS]

in in the rocketeer and yeah I don't [TS]

want to do it definitely did did tug [TS]

some of the same chords there and i [TS]

think yeah they're both really I really [TS]

enjoyable movies and I do love the [TS]

rocketeer dearly so i have a one last [TS]

superhero a question for you guys which [TS]

is we've just talked for nearly an hour [TS]

about Green Lantern Thor Captain America [TS]

and the early days of Professor X and [TS]

Magneto so I have to ask you have they [TS]

run out of comic book superhero stories [TS]

  to tell [TS]

have we are we scraping the bottom of [TS]

the barrel now know the [TS]

expound okay uh Superman and Batman [TS]

stories have been going on since the [TS]

nineteen forties they're not all good [TS]

but even if only one percent of them are [TS]

  good [TS]

that's lots of stories to tell Marvel [TS]

has been going on since the nineteen [TS]

sixties and they buy 1965 had something [TS]

like ten separate titles all going at [TS]

  once [TS]

even with an incredibly low hit rate [TS]

there's gotta be good stories you can [TS]

tell about even jerks like ant-man and [TS]

the wasp but making rice was at some [TS]

point gonna do an ant-man movie also [TS]

know that is happening anymore and i [TS]

would i would totally watch that time of [TS]

year i think but i mean but i think the [TS]

questions do people want to see those [TS]

characters I mean that people who read [TS]

the comics and know about these [TS]

characters is one thing but you know and [TS]

iron man would be the argument for right [TS]

which is ironman second to your [TS]

character and that was great movie and [TS]

very successful and but Green Lantern [TS]

would be the argument against if you [TS]

make a good movie with entertaining [TS]

characters people will be happy to go [TS]

  see them [TS]

you can't just throw a hundred million [TS]

dollars of CGI onto film and say well [TS]

this guy started a comic book in 1973 my [TS]

  work is done here [TS]

well I mean you know case in point [TS]

Superman Returns which you know arguably [TS]

one of the most visible unit arguably [TS]

the most famous superhero of all time [TS]

right in a movie that was not very good [TS]

yeah and i think that there's you know [TS]

there's still time there and of course [TS]

there they are doing a new superman [TS]

movie they've completely failed several [TS]

times to do anything with wonder woman [TS]

who is a challenging you know a [TS]

challenging figure i think in this you [TS]

know day and age i'm doing Batman that [TS]

I'm sure there's three or four more [TS]

Batman movies and I mean this is the [TS]

other this is the other thing to write [TS]

is like that they continually focus on [TS]

  redoing the origin stories [TS]

Oh like time time so we're doing [TS]

spider-man again next year you know and [TS]

it's like except for Iron Man which I [TS]

actually like they're redoing of the [TS]

origin story I never want to see another [TS]

origin story like we know and jumper man [TS]

is we know who Batman is just world and [TS]

we gotta be something interesting story [TS]

  about them [TS]

I kind of enjoyed that in the incredible [TS]

hulk which you know has a lot of issues [TS]

that basically they did the origin story [TS]

  like over the [TS]

credit sequence in there like now the [TS]

movie can start so ya know I I think [TS]

that's looking for it you know like [TS]

introducing your ok if on the off chance [TS]

you've never heard of this guy lets lets [TS]

you know sort of roll that out but but [TS]

let's focus the story on some other far [TS]

  more interesting part [TS]

yeah the Angli Hulk spent like an hour [TS]

timeout saying what was that green thing [TS]

that just did something we know what it [TS]

was it was the hall [TS]

let's see him smash stuff for your [TS]

wasting my time watching all three dogs [TS]

help Hulk dog is not even called the [TS]

  alcoholic [TS]

oh thanks angrily yeah but you haven't [TS]

made good movies but that was not 10 so [TS]

before we go are there any other movies [TS]

that you would like to make a case for [TS]

being close enough to this topic to [TS]

bring out by before we started recording [TS]

I heard some I heard some chatter about [TS]

other movies that arguably could be [TS]

comic book movies that came out this [TS]

year i watch the movie entitled priest [TS]

3d although i did not watch it and all [TS]

of the DS that were available well did [TS]

it you admit you miss daddy you let or [TS]

did you watch it 1d I wanted to wanted e [TS]

I jose height and width [TS]

okay good i tried watching it just [TS]

height and depth but I couldn't really [TS]

see what was going on very confusing and [TS]

this movie is allegedly based on a comic [TS]

book so I'd like to share my two [TS]

favorite things about this movie [TS]

alright one you need to be a trained [TS]

priests to shoot the vampires vampires [TS]

don't move very quickly but we are told [TS]

they moving something called concentric [TS]

points so lets you know about concentric [TS]

point can never shoot a vampire wait [TS]

wait so jeans be a priest or a geometry [TS]

know you need to be as a trained [TS]

geometry test to write the screenplay i [TS]

believe and the other thing is there's a [TS]

moment when paul bettany whose character [TS]

is called priest where he has defied is [TS]

the giant cgi rhino looking thing that's [TS]

on a ledge above him so he runs forward [TS]

and then the female priests throws some [TS]

rocks in front of him and as Paul that [TS]

need leaps into the air the first rock [TS]

find its way under his foot and he steps [TS]

on it like a stairway in midair and that [TS]

launches himself farther into the air [TS]

then steps on the next rock and [TS]

don't forget what happens but i think he [TS]

killed the Rhino something at and and [TS]

correct me here that this is paul [TS]

bettany this is not the movie with the [TS]

angels who are trying to kill everybody [TS]

  that's a different priest movie that's [TS]

legion a Legion yeah but it wasn't a [TS]

  priest [TS]

yes it is also not at all been a movie [TS]

with the ship and mercy no reason anjel [TS]

I don't know I guess the Legion are you [TS]

crazy i've got standards i watch it on [TS]

netflix streaming you know i don't [TS]

remember i believe he's an angel any as [TS]

  a machine gun [TS]

well as that was like I'm not sure they [TS]

got is that Michael is Michael I and he [TS]

he's down on earth to do good stuff [TS]

before and he talking all Batman come on [TS]

Mikey Mikey to his friends like he's [TS]

here to do Mikey the Archangel here to [TS]

do good with his machine gun [TS]

well he's gonna kill the bad angels oh [TS]

ok murderous Angela yeah yeah i hate [TS]

those jerks they are they're jerks ok so [TS]

priest skip it unless you want to see a [TS]

guy who walk on throne you come you can [TS]

probably find them on youtube right I [TS]

are you a big fan of the trope of after [TS]

the apocalypse everybody dresses in [TS]

western gear and everything is kind of d [TS]

saturated so it looks almost black and [TS]

white the ESI me up [TS]

well then good news i made another [TS]

  excellent [TS]

that is my favorite genre with dan what [TS]

was your so I was saying that that boys [TS]

an alien voice cowboys and technical [TS]

based on a comic book i'll leave that [TS]

movie was pretty good it did have it I [TS]

feel bad that my favorite scene in that [TS]

movie involved the main character [TS]

basically breaking someone else you know [TS]

someone else's hand but it was but I it [TS]

made me laugh a lot so and that guy was [TS]

kind of you know he had it coming [TS]

they're aliens they're Cowboys check on [TS]

  both fronts alright delivered [TS]

they delivered Harrison Ford and your [TS]

hearts are at in the indiana jones and [TS]

James Bond were both in that movie any [TS]

other movies that we should talk about [TS]

conan the barbarian kind of based on a [TS]

comic book is it based on a novel that [TS]

was also adapted into a comic [TS]

look you would like to think that they [TS]

read the books before making the movie [TS]

but i'm pretty sure they read the comic [TS]

book for it or just watch the arnold [TS]

schwarzenegger movie i don't think they [TS]

did that or the the animated series from [TS]

when I was growing up which actually [TS]

toss me that would be like making a [TS]

Godzilla movie are we watching the God's [TS]

elect cartoon from the eighties that had [TS]

God zuki Godzilla's precocious supposin [TS]

  I would watch that [TS]

yeah but Sookie the motion picture i [TS]

would i would just just wants them are [TS]

you have some standard i would pay for [TS]

it you pirate it WI that when do I was [TS]

on netflix away for children are if [TS]

somebody was showing it in front of your [TS]

face you wouldn't actively close your [TS]

eyes I wouldn't close my eyes [TS]

yea Monty did you see conan I did I [TS]

liked it a lot cone and I guess it's not [TS]

about our show host they go back and [TS]

forth some of them in the movies a conan [TS]

some sake Owen and I think the nate the [TS]

pronunciation Conan has taken over the [TS]

cultural lead when conan o'brien got the [TS]

gig doing late-night everybody called [TS]

him cone an and it's come that far that [TS]

that that he is now the most recognized [TS]

Conan and that the poor sword carrying [TS]

barbarian is is a hat has had to change [TS]

his pronunciation shameful so so jason [TS]

momoa from Game of Thrones is conan the [TS]

barbarian is he any good or is he better [TS]

as cal Drogo in Game of Thrones it's [TS]

interesting because the two characters [TS]

while basically the same big muscular [TS]

dude that kills things well that's his [TS]

bit right Jason Momoa Stargate he was [TS]

also a big muscular badass dude they're [TS]

not really the same thing is called [TS]

Drogo I think likes being a ruler he [TS]

likes just real cleaning out his pile of [TS]

skulls telling people what to do as you [TS]

do yes partly horse horse riding horse [TS]

but Conan like to do is just fight stuff [TS]

but even right he's busy simpler soul [TS]

even before it's jason momoa he's killed [TS]

like 20 guys in the arnold [TS]

schwarzenegger movie cone and spent some [TS]

time as a slave chained to a big wheel [TS]

that doesn't happen to this code and [TS]

because he will kill anything that [TS]

pubs near him which happens a lot more [TS]

is true to your general tolerates no [TS]

  wheels [TS]

yeah he doesn't need to be changed to a [TS]

wheel to turn into a big muscular guy he [TS]

doesn't like Evelyn and swearing revenge [TS]

huh an essential part of any medieval [TS]

workout I understand what does he have [TS]

  to [TS]

what's his revenge with his friend was [TS]

he trying to avenge all the bad guys [TS]

calm and write the movie starts with a [TS]

long boring explanation about some [TS]

magical crown that got destroyed and [TS]

scattered across the four winds and then [TS]

the bad guy starts the movie with all [TS]

but one piece that he gets the piece [TS]

from CODIS village so it doesn't even [TS]

turn out to be the MacGuffin but in the [TS]

process of getting that he kills conan's [TS]

mother and father no just cut corners [TS]

father and everyone in the village i put [TS]

it towards mother dies giving versed in [TS]

the middle of a battle and she has his [TS]

father cut the baby out of her belly so [TS]

you can see it before she died so she's [TS]

  his first victim [TS]

yes and he's on one covered in blood [TS]

really just you know when up from there [TS]

yeah there's lots of gore in this movie [TS]

I would not take the seven-year-old in [TS]

the ten-year-old ok good tip good tip [TS]

  did you like it [TS]

I thought it was okay like there's only [TS]

so good at kona movie is going to be and [TS]

I think this content movie did it was up [TS]

on the hit the ceiling of of movies that [TS]

are about code and yeah it's got a giant [TS]

mountain shaped like a skull [TS]

let's go check a muscular guy waving [TS]

swords around and it's got a weaselly [TS]

little sidekick thief check so it did [TS]

everything I was supposed to Monte is is [TS]

there I i got there's the one checkbox [TS]

you didn't check which is there is there [TS]

a love interest for Conan oh yes there [TS]

is a check thanks here and she's a woman [TS]

of some sort as i remember is that she [TS]

does she take off her clothes at any [TS]

  point [TS]

yes alright you then we have concluded [TS]

scientifically it's all it all helps [TS]

when you added up scientifically [TS]

by-the-numbers this is as good as a [TS]

conan movie can be i thought so [TS]

alright i watched caron and more [TS]

recently the rest of these movies have [TS]

just a guy I picked up on that i was [TS]

going to say your deets your [TS]

recollection of the details of cone and [TS]

is striking compared to your [TS]

recollection of Thor well my main [TS]

recollection of Thor's that i found it [TS]

  boring [TS]

yeah it's hard to go into a lot of [TS]

detail about me going so there's that [TS]

other standard which was dull i like [TS]

when he went into the pet store and [TS]

wanted to buy a horse that was funny [TS]

that that is probably my favorite scene [TS]

what does natalie portman do in that [TS]

  movie she's a scientist [TS]

she looks yeah yeah that's around it [TS]

looks pretty sure we're a lab coat she [TS]

falls in love with she's not that kind [TS]

of scientist the other kind she wasn't [TS]

little anymore duty from her what she [TS]

said on a lawn chair on the roof of what [TS]

i think is a restaurant she's what you [TS]

might consider an action sign other kind [TS]

of scientists that kind of doesn't wear [TS]

a lab coat then she's a field scientist [TS]

always around a funny VIN yeah in fields [TS]

early in the movie agent Coulson's goons [TS]

steal all their lab equipment which I [TS]

assume you're included their lab coats [TS]

ok so Agent Coulson does not want her [TS]

  wearing a lab coat [TS]

nope probably would have stolen her top [TS]

two if you got no we have to get away [TS]

with it on neck Furies orders i'm [TS]

guessing fury makes me so angry so next [TS]

next year we'll get that avengers movie [TS]

directed by joss whedon then we'll see [TS]

what Marvel has been trying to lead us [TS]

up to for the last 45 make a movie that [TS]

u2 was like seven other movies to [TS]

everyone the problem also is that the [TS]

superhero movies often have this [TS]

tendency to just pack too much in and [TS]

adventures comes pre-packed with too [TS]

much unless somebody very respected the [TS]

Avengers is like five hours long and [TS]

it's really just set up for the avengers [TS]

2 and four two and Captain America to an [TS]

iron man 3 and a half and all of these [TS]

are which have the subtitle electric [TS]

really we're just building up to 20 [TS]

twenties west coast avengers wasn't [TS]

there wasn't there like a Cleveland [TS]

Avengers 2 there was added which great [TS]

lake of it leave ya feelin needed its [TS]

own event great lake aventurine that [TS]

city is in worse shape than I thought [TS]

yeah there was an Avengers based on the [TS]

Great Lakes and there was a Justice [TS]

  League based in Detroit [TS]

yeah like those things are true yeah I [TS]

thought it was odd that the [TS]

The Avengers are based in New York in [TS]

the comic books which is also where the [TS]

Fantastic Four are based it's where [TS]

spider-man is basis for dr. Strange's [TS]

basis for doing a lot of crime [TS]

  oh also [TS]

  oh also [TS]

what will come next in DC comics with [TS]

you go there if you're a criminal [TS]

you're a criminal in the Marvel Universe [TS]

I advise you to go to someplace other [TS]

than New York like not you want us yeah [TS]

  wait [TS]

alright i'm going to call it here at [TS]

time of death type of Jack one hour [TS]

thank you all for watching these movies [TS]

so I didn't have to except for the [TS]

captain america one which i saw i [TS]

enjoyed and I'm especially going to [TS]

check out priest Monty because i can't [TS]

wait to see it in 2d priest in 3d into [TS]

2d so I until next time i would like to [TS]

thank my guests Dan Morgan thank you for [TS]

being here and watching these many [TS]

  movies [TS]

oh you're welcome especially green late [TS]

again I would do it again [TS]

alright Tony thanks for being here again [TS]

and thanks for being dance buddy so we [TS]

didn't have to sit through Green Lantern [TS]

alone anytime I mean but not great but [TS]

  not good [TS]

no no that's we have standards here [TS]

green laser to man is comin ball at and [TS]

Monty thank you for seeing these movies [TS]

being on the podcast and and explaining [TS]

the plot of crease to me that I could [TS]

help i do it for a grateful America yes [TS]

in America thanks you until next time on [TS]

the incomparable i am jason l thanks for [TS]

  listening [TS]

  [Music] [TS]
