84: Wind is the Enemy
◼
►
the incomparable podcast number 84
[TS]
◼
►
market 2012 we're back on the
[TS]
◼
►
incomparable podcast I am Jason Snelling
[TS]
◼
►
your host and i'm joined by a single
[TS]
◼
►
guest this time it is John siracusa hi
[TS]
◼
►
hello Jason we are here to talk about
[TS]
◼
►
the films of one particular director and
[TS]
◼
►
the it is heiio miyazaki the Japanese
[TS]
◼
►
director of animated films many of which
[TS]
◼
►
are near and dear to our hearts so we
[TS]
◼
►
thought we would take some time and and
[TS]
◼
►
we've been running up to this because we
[TS]
◼
►
did our children's film episode where we
[TS]
◼
►
talked about this a little bit and in
[TS]
◼
►
the in the draft of films John
[TS]
◼
►
specifically avoided drafting miyazaki
[TS]
◼
►
movies and I had one of my own honorable
[TS]
◼
►
mention but I didn't draft any anyway
[TS]
◼
►
but you may you may or may not i mean
[TS]
◼
►
he's kind of a cult figure right i mean
[TS]
◼
►
the people who know him really know him
[TS]
◼
►
and love him and then there's lots of
[TS]
◼
►
people I think who quite sadly have no
[TS]
◼
►
idea who this guy is and he's actually
[TS]
◼
►
one of the great figures in animated
[TS]
◼
►
yeah I'm kind of disappointed in our
[TS]
◼
►
crop of nerds that I thought there would
[TS]
◼
►
be more miyazaki nerds even you were not
[TS]
◼
►
a miyazaki nerd you had seen some and
[TS]
◼
►
like them but you have to do a bunch of
[TS]
◼
►
homework for this episode to go back and
[TS]
◼
►
watch the newcomers I thought for sure
[TS]
◼
►
they would be a better representation in
[TS]
◼
►
the incomparable crew of people who are
[TS]
◼
►
really into anime or no miyazaki is but
[TS]
◼
►
it looks like it was just me and then
[TS]
◼
►
you as the person who was willing to
[TS]
◼
►
well as the host as the host I am always
[TS]
◼
►
up for well that's not true there are
[TS]
◼
►
some things that I'm not going to the
[TS]
◼
►
research on but in this I was happy to
[TS]
◼
►
do it because a couple of his movies are
[TS]
◼
►
among my favorite movies of all time and
[TS]
◼
►
ones that i love watching with my kids
[TS]
◼
►
and so I was happy to explore further
[TS]
◼
►
but it's true i'm sure there are some
[TS]
◼
►
listeners out there who cannot believe
[TS]
◼
►
that we couldn't chin up a third or
[TS]
◼
►
fourth guest for this episode but I
[TS]
◼
►
figured at this point you know between
[TS]
◼
►
the two of us to to survey this guy's
[TS]
◼
►
career when we're talking about miyazaki
[TS]
◼
►
with what does he have like nine feature
[TS]
◼
►
so there's a lot to talk about i think
[TS]
◼
►
we could probably go film by film and
[TS]
◼
►
talk about them a little bit and
[TS]
◼
►
honestly i think that that we could take
[TS]
◼
►
one or two of these movies and spend a
[TS]
◼
►
full hour just on them so between the
[TS]
◼
►
two of us you can you can go you can go
[TS]
◼
►
with a deep knowledge or i guess the
[TS]
◼
►
broad knowledge of his career and I can
[TS]
◼
►
go deep with a few films and then I can
[TS]
◼
►
chime in on a few others but so so where
[TS]
◼
►
should we start hehe miyazaki actually
[TS]
◼
►
did some some comics some manga before
[TS]
◼
►
he he started doing films right that's
[TS]
◼
►
one thing I don't know about i'm not a
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki historian and i followed his
[TS]
◼
►
career from so my understanding is that
[TS]
◼
►
NASA is actually based among get that he
[TS]
◼
►
working out yeah a lot of his movies are
[TS]
◼
►
based on works that are not his so he's
[TS]
◼
►
right one of those people who have to
[TS]
◼
►
write everything that he creates or
[TS]
◼
►
originated the intellectual property as
[TS]
◼
►
we now called right right and he's also
[TS]
◼
►
got some interesting at these films are
[TS]
◼
►
fascinated me the first the first movie
[TS]
◼
►
of his that I saw was actually spirited
[TS]
◼
►
away which won the Oscar for Best
[TS]
◼
►
Animated Feature and that is a that is a
[TS]
◼
►
really strange movie and I remember
[TS]
◼
►
seeing it and thinking parts of this are
[TS]
◼
►
really beautiful and then there are
[TS]
◼
►
things that happen in the plot that I i
[TS]
◼
►
just got the distinct feeling that
[TS]
◼
►
despite all of the presumably careful
[TS]
◼
►
translation that went into the movie in
[TS]
◼
►
making it for an english-speaking
[TS]
◼
►
audience that the that they were massive
[TS]
◼
►
cultural gaps that I could not
[TS]
◼
►
understand that and I kept thinking to
[TS]
◼
►
myself I'm sure what I just saw it made
[TS]
◼
►
sense to people in Japan but i have no
[TS]
◼
►
idea what is going to happen now like
[TS]
◼
►
took things that happen completely out
[TS]
◼
►
of the blue at which I actually love I
[TS]
◼
►
mean there's some scenes in there that
[TS]
◼
►
that I wear it in spirited away where
[TS]
◼
►
there's that what the the faceless the
[TS]
◼
►
no-face guy and he ends up like vomiting
[TS]
◼
►
everything its he's eaten and and I
[TS]
◼
►
thought well sure of course that would
[TS]
◼
►
happen he there's like a slug that gets
[TS]
◼
►
thrown up and mph at and it just it was
[TS]
◼
►
so weird and and so I didn't watch any
[TS]
◼
►
other movies of his for a while because
[TS]
◼
►
that is a very strange movie I do
[TS]
◼
►
have you watched any anime and your
[TS]
◼
►
sordid past of being a teen comic book
[TS]
◼
►
nerd so whatever
[TS]
◼
►
no I am completely anime layered beyond
[TS]
◼
►
the beyond the American a Americanized
[TS]
◼
►
version of i guess it was a battleship
[TS]
◼
►
yamato but its star Blazers basically
[TS]
◼
►
with the only i'm only anime that I ever
[TS]
◼
►
at that I ever saw and so when I saw
[TS]
◼
►
spirited away I was like whoa this is
[TS]
◼
►
that's so so when you watch a lot of
[TS]
◼
►
anime or I'll up you tend to get steeped
[TS]
◼
►
in Japanese culture without even knowing
[TS]
◼
►
you are because you don't know where
[TS]
◼
►
these things come from but once you see
[TS]
◼
►
the same type of thing in 20 different
[TS]
◼
►
and you're like that must be a thing is
[TS]
◼
►
surely these 20 different people aren't
[TS]
◼
►
didn't arrive at this strange thing that
[TS]
◼
►
strange to me as a westerner on their
[TS]
◼
►
own and so by the time spirited away
[TS]
◼
►
comes along if like me you spent here
[TS]
◼
►
teen years watching all the anime you
[TS]
◼
►
could find at speedway seems i mean i'm
[TS]
◼
►
not going to say it's not weird it is
[TS]
◼
►
weird but it's kind of like the same
[TS]
◼
►
kind of weird that are used as
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and within the realm of anime i
[TS]
◼
►
would say that like if if you have never
[TS]
◼
►
seen a movie before and then you saw I
[TS]
◼
►
don't get to pick a director I gotta
[TS]
◼
►
terrence malick Quentin Tarantino's I
[TS]
◼
►
gave if there is something you know
[TS]
◼
►
there are directors and his films and
[TS]
◼
►
then there are the ones that we put up
[TS]
◼
►
on pedestals these great directors or
[TS]
◼
►
anime is similar there's anime that's
[TS]
◼
►
you know those Michael Bay anime to come
[TS]
◼
►
to put it bluntly I and and then
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki is definitely one of those big
[TS]
◼
►
names in Scorsese's the coppola he's
[TS]
◼
►
even the the quentin tarantino sometimes
[TS]
◼
►
kind of all rolled into one so although
[TS]
◼
►
i was a big anime fan when i was a teen
[TS]
◼
►
as i got older i came to narrow my
[TS]
◼
►
appreciation of Japanese animation so
[TS]
◼
►
why I only want the good stuff kinda
[TS]
◼
►
like you with the with watchman i just
[TS]
◼
►
listened to that watchman episode where
[TS]
◼
►
you said that after watch men you're
[TS]
◼
►
like why why am i bothering with this
[TS]
◼
►
yeah well read this crap because like
[TS]
◼
►
look at the watchman showed how it's
[TS]
◼
►
done and anything doesn't live up to
[TS]
◼
►
that standard seems like I'm wasting my
[TS]
◼
►
so once I discovered this video jibley
[TS]
◼
►
movies and miyazaki and discovered this
[TS]
◼
►
tiny sliver as it isn't all media of
[TS]
◼
►
really really great japanese animation i
[TS]
◼
►
became much less interested in the more
[TS]
◼
►
sort of schlocky stuff right and i'm
[TS]
◼
►
sure i mean i-i don't wanna say anything
[TS]
◼
►
negative about anime fans because I'm
[TS]
◼
►
sure there's a lot of really cool stuff
[TS]
◼
►
out there but i do get the sense that uh
[TS]
◼
►
it can be well as an outsider I find
[TS]
◼
►
that kind of off-putting right there's
[TS]
◼
►
so much detail and people who know about
[TS]
◼
►
this stuff and and so when I say we're
[TS]
◼
►
spending an hour talking about a
[TS]
◼
►
japanese animation director I know that
[TS]
◼
►
might even come across as being kind of
[TS]
◼
►
like really esoteric and I think that's
[TS]
◼
►
the the primary point i wanted to get
[TS]
◼
►
across in this episode is you know
[TS]
◼
►
Miyazaki's got some stuff that's that's
[TS]
◼
►
more out there but he's got some he's
[TS]
◼
►
he's made some movies especially for
[TS]
◼
►
kids that i would put up against any any
[TS]
◼
►
movie made animated appropriate for
[TS]
◼
►
children in the history of film he you
[TS]
◼
►
know it's it is like you said he's not
[TS]
◼
►
only a master of the anime shandra but
[TS]
◼
►
he somebody who who really transcends it
[TS]
◼
►
and that people who've never seen like
[TS]
◼
►
me who've never been swimming in in
[TS]
◼
►
anime can really appreciate the work
[TS]
◼
►
he's done because it is remarkable some
[TS]
◼
►
of the films are really transcended and
[TS]
◼
►
once you've seen his work you watch
[TS]
◼
►
other movies of his I've been doing it
[TS]
◼
►
winding up you know my research for this
[TS]
◼
►
episode and you will as with a great
[TS]
◼
►
director you begin to see his style
[TS]
◼
►
everywhere it in in his work and his
[TS]
◼
►
influence and other work which is
[TS]
◼
►
actually great so you know don't if you
[TS]
◼
►
haven't seen miyazaki's movies we're
[TS]
◼
►
going to talk about them but you should
[TS]
◼
►
see them they're really good
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and I think that that the the
[TS]
◼
►
strangest of Japanese culture is kind of
[TS]
◼
►
a barrier it it's maybe kind of like
[TS]
◼
►
someone who hasn't read a lot of
[TS]
◼
►
superhero comics and being able to
[TS]
◼
►
appreciate the watchman because the
[TS]
◼
►
watchman is in like a typical superhero
[TS]
◼
►
comic but it really really helps to have
[TS]
◼
►
a background in superhero comics to
[TS]
◼
►
fully appreciated and so you don't get
[TS]
◼
►
like put off by the things that are
[TS]
◼
►
weird but that are not weird if you just
[TS]
◼
►
soaked in superhero comics for four
[TS]
◼
►
alright so something a lot of people i
[TS]
◼
►
know we'll see Studio Ghibli movie or
[TS]
◼
►
documentary any kind of anime and our
[TS]
◼
►
and can't get past the things they don't
[TS]
◼
►
understand whether the japanese cultural
[TS]
◼
►
things and make things are simply
[TS]
◼
►
different standards and what we think
[TS]
◼
►
it's appropriate to show two children or
[TS]
◼
►
how you should be structured they can't
[TS]
◼
►
get like they're looking at it they're
[TS]
◼
►
expecting it to be like a Disney movie
[TS]
◼
►
or even like a Pixar movie and I would
[TS]
◼
►
say that miyazaki's movies as well see
[TS]
◼
►
when we discuss them are so far from
[TS]
◼
►
being like a Disney movie and they're
[TS]
◼
►
far from being a Pixar movie they do not
[TS]
◼
►
have any interest in the formula for
[TS]
◼
►
american western movies for adults or
[TS]
◼
►
children yeah they are structured
[TS]
◼
►
differently the characters active and
[TS]
◼
►
leave things happen there are different
[TS]
◼
►
and it's sometimes difficult people to
[TS]
◼
►
get a grip on ethnic and sometimes
[TS]
◼
►
I mean this is and this is my thought
[TS]
◼
►
while watching spirited away again
[TS]
◼
►
was I my wife and I watched that movie
[TS]
◼
►
and am I turned to her and after this
[TS]
◼
►
one scene which is something i think it
[TS]
◼
►
might have been the vomiting it was
[TS]
◼
►
something was something like that the
[TS]
◼
►
stink spirit that enters the bathhouse I
[TS]
◼
►
think it was the stink spirit and
[TS]
◼
►
everybody's like oh its distinct spirit
[TS]
◼
►
that it's here in the bathhouse and i
[TS]
◼
►
turned my wife and I say of course right
[TS]
◼
►
and and really it's that moment of like
[TS]
◼
►
going with it just like I'm sure that
[TS]
◼
►
there's a reason why this makes sense i
[TS]
◼
►
have no idea what it is
[TS]
◼
►
we'll just go with it you know and I
[TS]
◼
►
love that it's kind of there are plot
[TS]
◼
►
twist that happen in miyazaki movies
[TS]
◼
►
that are that i love because i cannot
[TS]
◼
►
anticipate them because all of my
[TS]
◼
►
programming and as you said all of my
[TS]
◼
►
Hollywood movie plot point programming
[TS]
◼
►
fails and its crew actually it's great
[TS]
◼
►
it's great to go wow I had no idea that
[TS]
◼
►
would happen and you're completely
[TS]
◼
►
unbored from what you realize it's kind
[TS]
◼
►
of track that you've been on your on
[TS]
◼
►
your honor on on the rails and you're
[TS]
◼
►
moving through the plot and then with
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki realized that that you're not
[TS]
◼
►
it's not really no there is no track
[TS]
◼
►
it's a big open greenfield and you're
[TS]
◼
►
lost in it yeah I i was feel that that
[TS]
◼
►
Westerners get more of a kick out of
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki than even the Japanese because
[TS]
◼
►
a lot of things that are boring and
[TS]
◼
►
normal and expected in Japanese culture
[TS]
◼
►
are exotic and strange to us
[TS]
◼
►
you're like wow what that how could you
[TS]
◼
►
come up with that idea and it's some
[TS]
◼
►
sort of Japanese tradition for 300 years
[TS]
◼
►
old that everyone in Japan knows about
[TS]
◼
►
and it's not interesting to their eyes
[TS]
◼
►
just like you know what I have all their
[TS]
◼
►
washing the floors by holding little
[TS]
◼
►
things and running with their little
[TS]
◼
►
feet behind it like it's an interesting
[TS]
◼
►
i'm now we came up with that like well
[TS]
◼
►
couple centuries of Japanese culture
[TS]
◼
►
brought that about
[TS]
◼
►
yeah alright so i should be fun we
[TS]
◼
►
should dive into one of ya so that his
[TS]
◼
►
his first feature in the in the studio
[TS]
◼
►
ghibli Cayman is naka of the valley of
[TS]
◼
►
the wind from 1984 which is a nice post
[TS]
◼
►
apocalyptic fantasy patrick stewart is
[TS]
◼
►
the first voice we hear you know you're
[TS]
◼
►
going to talk about the very act of this
[TS]
◼
►
we do ya discussion dubbed vs sub well
[TS]
◼
►
remember a brief moment on this so yes
[TS]
◼
►
we should you watch the dubbed version
[TS]
◼
►
of all these I i did I watched dubbed
[TS]
◼
►
version even though in some cases i had
[TS]
◼
►
access to the subtitled version i am a
[TS]
◼
►
i'm a savage and also many of them i
[TS]
◼
►
watch with my kids and it was really not
[TS]
◼
►
an option to show that the the subtitle
[TS]
◼
►
version so the reason most japanese
[TS]
◼
►
animation fans dislike dub so much is
[TS]
◼
►
that historically the people doing the
[TS]
◼
►
dubbing or not talented and not numerous
[TS]
◼
►
not numbers mean they have like one guy
[TS]
◼
►
three voices in a movie and because they
[TS]
◼
►
didn't really care you read the lines
[TS]
◼
►
try to put something into it whatever we
[TS]
◼
►
could have done after this we could have
[TS]
◼
►
reached the voice of another character
[TS]
◼
►
and had a four-person project
[TS]
◼
►
yeah I call lots and that for the
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki movies though they were
[TS]
◼
►
acquired by disney and everyone who's an
[TS]
◼
►
animator worships miyazaki of the
[TS]
◼
►
current generation of animators and so
[TS]
◼
►
the deal was structured such that they
[TS]
◼
►
couldn't touch the frame of the movies
[TS]
◼
►
is understanding the content frame of
[TS]
◼
►
the movies right so they couldn't chop
[TS]
◼
►
it up into little pieces and the dubbing
[TS]
◼
►
has been done with basically a-list
[TS]
◼
►
actor so you talk about who who is a
[TS]
◼
►
wife and pull of this page before I
[TS]
◼
►
started this but who is voicing
[TS]
◼
►
not Monica you've got Patrick Stewart
[TS]
◼
►
that's not bad for a voice
[TS]
◼
►
uma Thurman tile above isn't it actually
[TS]
◼
►
chris sarandon from the princess bride
[TS]
◼
►
is an edward james olmos and of course
[TS]
◼
►
mark hamill is the mayor
[TS]
◼
►
yeah its finest Joker from Batman so
[TS]
◼
►
they're not skimping on the voiceovers a
[TS]
◼
►
but that the one the one other reason i
[TS]
◼
►
think most people who are into japanese
[TS]
◼
►
animation won't admit why they like the
[TS]
◼
►
listening to the Japanese is a side if
[TS]
◼
►
they think they like they like learning
[TS]
◼
►
japanese and it's interesting time for
[TS]
◼
►
them to learn a foreign language and
[TS]
◼
►
picking up words and phrases is because
[TS]
◼
►
when I'm Westerners watch a an animated
[TS]
◼
►
movie in Japanese they don't know and
[TS]
◼
►
honestly don't know Japanese they can't
[TS]
◼
►
tell when the acting is terrible and so
[TS]
◼
►
they imagine that the acting and the
[TS]
◼
►
dialogue is much better than it actually
[TS]
◼
►
sometimes it is great and is much better
[TS]
◼
►
in fact almost all the time it is better
[TS]
◼
►
than the dubs but in the ability to do
[TS]
◼
►
not it and it's free because you're like
[TS]
◼
►
well that the line could have been
[TS]
◼
►
delivered terribly but i don't know what
[TS]
◼
►
the worst words just me so I have to
[TS]
◼
►
read the subtitles and then you're at
[TS]
◼
►
the mercy of the person doing the
[TS]
◼
►
subtitling which is also an issue right
[TS]
◼
►
and the second reason is that when
[TS]
◼
►
they've doubled it into English they
[TS]
◼
►
tend to add stuff almost never remove
[TS]
◼
►
the ad stuff and if you should try this
[TS]
◼
►
experiment for a couple sections of the
[TS]
◼
►
movie they will add usually expository
[TS]
◼
►
dialogue that does not exist in the
[TS]
◼
►
movie often when no characters on screen
[TS]
◼
►
because they can't match it up with
[TS]
◼
►
mouth movements because there's no no
[TS]
◼
►
audio here at all and they're putting
[TS]
◼
►
the exposition in there to try to
[TS]
◼
►
explain to American audiences what the
[TS]
◼
►
heck is going on something they wouldn't
[TS]
◼
►
have to explain to Japanese audiences
[TS]
◼
►
like oh this is the temple of whatever
[TS]
◼
►
or this is where the spirits that were
[TS]
◼
►
you know something that's like obvious
[TS]
◼
►
to anyone in Japan and that kind of
[TS]
◼
►
exposition is extremely grading to
[TS]
◼
►
people who are you know it imagine they
[TS]
◼
►
took your favorite movie just added a
[TS]
◼
►
bunch of texts nothing worse than and
[TS]
◼
►
expositions like it's okay just stop
[TS]
◼
►
stop talking we know what this is and
[TS]
◼
►
for someone who watches a lot of
[TS]
◼
►
animation room Japan we know this stuff
[TS]
◼
►
to we don't want those extra lines at
[TS]
◼
►
its all these movies are filled with
[TS]
◼
►
every all the ones that you watching the
[TS]
◼
►
dubs and these are the some of the best
[TS]
◼
►
dubs available anywhere good acting good
[TS]
◼
►
effort generally an effort to be true to
[TS]
◼
►
the spirit of the original lines and not
[TS]
◼
►
a direct translation but anime nerds
[TS]
◼
►
tend to like subtitles literal
[TS]
◼
►
translations know adding of any words
[TS]
◼
►
see I think that's a that's a high bar
[TS]
◼
►
for for watching us that as a you know
[TS]
◼
►
and and normally I would I mean I would
[TS]
◼
►
always choose a in a live-action movie i
[TS]
◼
►
would always choose the the subtitles
[TS]
◼
►
over a dub I i feel like with with
[TS]
◼
►
animation sense there is there's a
[TS]
◼
►
degree of matching of the dialogue but
[TS]
◼
►
you know it isn't it isn't an actor who
[TS]
◼
►
spoke those lines at that time or or is
[TS]
◼
►
looping their lines exactly it is you
[TS]
◼
►
know an animation track that's recorded
[TS]
◼
►
and then the air the audio track and
[TS]
◼
►
then the animation happens so it's a
[TS]
◼
►
little bit artificial so I feel like
[TS]
◼
►
it's not that far removed as a as
[TS]
◼
►
somebody who is not well versed in this
[TS]
◼
►
stuff having those little bits of
[TS]
◼
►
exposition probably helped me understand
[TS]
◼
►
it and also i have to admit the miyazaki
[TS]
◼
►
movies have have generally good dub
[TS]
◼
►
tracks right like you said with with
[TS]
◼
►
good actors and I i would rather watch
[TS]
◼
►
the you know watch the animation then be
[TS]
◼
►
distracted by having to stop looking at
[TS]
◼
►
what's happening on screen in order to
[TS]
◼
►
read and go back and forth that said i
[TS]
◼
►
will probably go back and watch these
[TS]
◼
►
movies it with the subtitles but as a
[TS]
◼
►
first watch I really wanted to just have
[TS]
◼
►
the experience of watching them and and
[TS]
◼
►
not have to read the subtitles to go
[TS]
◼
►
along with it but and if you and if you
[TS]
◼
►
see these things enough times I think
[TS]
◼
►
you'll be shocked to see
[TS]
◼
►
wait isn't a dialogue during this
[TS]
◼
►
section that's long sections long
[TS]
◼
►
sections where there is no dialogue at
[TS]
◼
►
all and it's so weird because very
[TS]
◼
►
rarely in live-action like if you see a
[TS]
◼
►
foreign live-action movie
[TS]
◼
►
very rarely do they insert a bunch of
[TS]
◼
►
English dialogue where there was no no
[TS]
◼
►
lines at all from the actress because
[TS]
◼
►
they happen to be off-screen huh
[TS]
◼
►
interested and it's not eat they do a
[TS]
◼
►
good job in these movies but large
[TS]
◼
►
sections of the movies there is no one
[TS]
◼
►
talking about anything and they just the
[TS]
◼
►
plot advances by them showing pictures
[TS]
◼
►
on the screen so when Master yuba
[TS]
◼
►
emerges from the from the the horrible
[TS]
◼
►
plague and we hear that he's patrick
[TS]
◼
►
stewart or in your version great
[TS]
◼
►
japanese actor Goro nya but I guess
[TS]
◼
►
thank you wikipedia uh-huh
[TS]
◼
►
anyway so that we should we should get
[TS]
◼
►
on with with not
[TS]
◼
►
which is I was surprised by it is this
[TS]
◼
►
apocalyptic adventure story with what is
[TS]
◼
►
that there's this there's this the toxic
[TS]
◼
►
jungle the sea of decay that is
[TS]
◼
►
destroying everything we're in like the
[TS]
◼
►
far future and there's the apocalypse
[TS]
◼
►
and and there's a princess of course
[TS]
◼
►
who's like a fighter princess and I i
[TS]
◼
►
was surprised by this movie I was my
[TS]
◼
►
wife and i watch this without the kids
[TS]
◼
►
it was a it's a it's it's really a crazy
[TS]
◼
►
action movie more than anything else is
[TS]
◼
►
not yet and and think consider this out
[TS]
◼
►
you're saying this is his first movie I
[TS]
◼
►
don't know about his history to say
[TS]
◼
►
whether his first tooth he did movies
[TS]
◼
►
before I think studio ghibli was formed
[TS]
◼
►
proper I think they called consider this
[TS]
◼
►
the first in the cannon right and and it
[TS]
◼
►
really is like especially for someone
[TS]
◼
►
who had seen kiki's delivery service in
[TS]
◼
►
total it's not gonna watch a miyazaki
[TS]
◼
►
movie probably weren't expecting like at
[TS]
◼
►
a blockbuster action movie structured
[TS]
◼
►
pretty conventionally from from the you
[TS]
◼
►
know looking at the whole of his work
[TS]
◼
►
you know it's it is like an action movie
[TS]
◼
►
like where is this coming from is this
[TS]
◼
►
and this is not like he eventually
[TS]
◼
►
developed into making these big giant
[TS]
◼
►
action movies not right out of the gate
[TS]
◼
►
like it you know with his first official
[TS]
◼
►
studio ghibli movie it is it you can
[TS]
◼
►
imagine this as a Hollywood movie only
[TS]
◼
►
of course you wouldn't have a female
[TS]
◼
►
protagonist and the the plot would be
[TS]
◼
►
different but like this threat this this
[TS]
◼
►
post-apocalyptic world this giant
[TS]
◼
►
insects there's battles there's Army's
[TS]
◼
►
all that stuff like where is this the
[TS]
◼
►
guy who made totoro the big floating
[TS]
◼
►
teddy bear thing it's not the same got
[TS]
◼
►
up at the end of the reason I wanted you
[TS]
◼
►
to see this and a couple other ones too
[TS]
◼
►
is that in many respects when I look at
[TS]
◼
►
his work it seems like he's really made
[TS]
◼
►
this exact same movie several time that
[TS]
◼
►
without without with minor variations i
[TS]
◼
►
think just a little bit that you've
[TS]
◼
►
watched you can kinda see that in it
[TS]
◼
►
ok it is and it is a different thread of
[TS]
◼
►
his work he makes these movies that are
[TS]
◼
►
smaller and quieter and quote unquote
[TS]
◼
►
this one was like four teenagers and not
[TS]
◼
►
quite a lot smaller explosions there's
[TS]
◼
►
guns there's blood this gut says
[TS]
◼
►
yeah it's um it it reminded me you're
[TS]
◼
►
right it was very different from the
[TS]
◼
►
his that I had seen before it didn't put
[TS]
◼
►
me in the mind of the you know extremely
[TS]
◼
►
limited other kinds of Japanese
[TS]
◼
►
animation that I've seen that were more
[TS]
◼
►
of the action variety and I and I
[TS]
◼
►
started to theorize as I was watching it
[TS]
◼
►
you know maybe this is director who kind
[TS]
◼
►
of went in the other direction a little
[TS]
◼
►
bits and sort of like started with
[TS]
◼
►
things that were more the usual subject
[TS]
◼
►
matter and then you know and then kind
[TS]
◼
►
of rebelled and did things that were
[TS]
◼
►
very very different from these kind of
[TS]
◼
►
sci-fi adventure stories but uh you know
[TS]
◼
►
it was fun it was a lot of fun I mean
[TS]
◼
►
there's the the the princess and she's
[TS]
◼
►
got her she's got her like little flying
[TS]
◼
►
machine right wing yeah yeah which is
[TS]
◼
►
pretty cool and there's create the crazy
[TS]
◼
►
giant bugs though move that that just
[TS]
◼
►
kind of like they go on a rampage and
[TS]
◼
►
made you know III they they come out of
[TS]
◼
►
the out of the the jungle and they just
[TS]
◼
►
keep running until you i guess like
[TS]
◼
►
soothe them in some so I so I could be
[TS]
◼
►
soothed admit they're ok strange even
[TS]
◼
►
the subject matter see though it seems
[TS]
◼
►
like to you that it is very similar to
[TS]
◼
►
the typical anime subject matter
[TS]
◼
►
post-apocalyptic world we are weird
[TS]
◼
►
creature is fighting he treats me
[TS]
◼
►
Rockies all of his movies are there's a
[TS]
◼
►
definite flavor to them two totally
[TS]
◼
►
separate them in my mind away from other
[TS]
◼
►
anime and similar subject matter you can
[TS]
◼
►
tell the second just just the way he
[TS]
◼
►
treats the story and the characters and
[TS]
◼
►
and how it's all built on us now but I
[TS]
◼
►
don't think I'm spoiling anything for
[TS]
◼
►
anyone who's an adult is going to watch
[TS]
◼
►
this movie but like that and this this
[TS]
◼
►
is a sequence you see many other things
[TS]
◼
►
where there's an introduction to the
[TS]
◼
►
world and then there's a credit sequence
[TS]
◼
►
and I love his beautiful credit
[TS]
◼
►
sequences where they will usually
[TS]
◼
►
through still images or murals or
[TS]
◼
►
show some sort of like and here's the
[TS]
◼
►
world you're entering into and as you
[TS]
◼
►
know the credits roll over this musical
[TS]
◼
►
score and it says like here's this world
[TS]
◼
►
there was a world and then this these
[TS]
◼
►
big Giants came along who have heads the
[TS]
◼
►
top of which shaped like ballistic
[TS]
◼
►
missiles hint hint everybody
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and then the world ends and then
[TS]
◼
►
you know that there's just these legends
[TS]
◼
►
that you know that really show that
[TS]
◼
►
being able to get that is a thing that
[TS]
◼
►
he loves to do and it is pretty
[TS]
◼
►
and that's kind of like your
[TS]
◼
►
introduction to this world in any the
[TS]
◼
►
entire movie is kind of a lot of his
[TS]
◼
►
movies are like this i have a pretty
[TS]
◼
►
simple message but they're delivered in
[TS]
◼
►
a way that smuggles that message and
[TS]
◼
►
much better than say like Wally like a
[TS]
◼
►
you we should really put the earth like
[TS]
◼
►
this one is basically hey we should
[TS]
◼
►
really put the earth and we shouldn't
[TS]
◼
►
kill each other with nuclear weapons
[TS]
◼
►
beautiful poison yours for generations
[TS]
◼
►
in order but as well as a younger kid
[TS]
◼
►
when I first saw this I was fascinated
[TS]
◼
►
by the sci-fi story like wow that would
[TS]
◼
►
be like if the earth was totally
[TS]
◼
►
wearable totally destroyed it was like
[TS]
◼
►
2,000 years after that reason but you
[TS]
◼
►
know some people are still around how
[TS]
◼
►
would they live it we like medieval it
[TS]
◼
►
was kind of like or where they have
[TS]
◼
►
technology and what kind of creatures
[TS]
◼
►
would be prowling around within this
[TS]
◼
►
world but they do have this you know
[TS]
◼
►
flying message about can't we all just
[TS]
◼
►
get along and don't poison the earth and
[TS]
◼
►
don't be mean to the bugs and stuff like
[TS]
◼
►
that but these characters and and the
[TS]
◼
►
way they live and relate to each other
[TS]
◼
►
in particular the way the protagonist
[TS]
◼
►
like her path through the story is very
[TS]
◼
►
very unlike anything in western movies
[TS]
◼
►
like when you have a princess and a
[TS]
◼
►
western movie she does not follow the
[TS]
◼
►
plot arc this character follows in this
[TS]
◼
►
definitely not this is the male lead
[TS]
◼
►
role she's a hero
[TS]
◼
►
she fights things she saves people but
[TS]
◼
►
she does it in a way that's not male
[TS]
◼
►
testosterone or whatever she's like
[TS]
◼
►
she's like a pacifist hero like if we
[TS]
◼
►
ever talk about return of the jedi we
[TS]
◼
►
can discuss loser after all that she
[TS]
◼
►
wants to go she finds the baby right she
[TS]
◼
►
saves the babydome yeah that's like
[TS]
◼
►
she's defending and she's helping the
[TS]
◼
►
terrorists home baby yeah yeah and you
[TS]
◼
►
know and cheap she fights but she also
[TS]
◼
►
has you know typically stereotypical
[TS]
◼
►
female sensibilities like I don't kill
[TS]
◼
►
the baby bug you know and it this this
[TS]
◼
►
also will talk about the other movies
[TS]
◼
►
who is the enemy in this movie who is
[TS]
◼
►
well isn't the i mean it's like the the
[TS]
◼
►
people with the guns right
[TS]
◼
►
basically it's legal it's the soldiers
[TS]
◼
►
in the government
[TS]
◼
►
yeah it's not the Bugs know but they're
[TS]
◼
►
things that kill everybody or whatever
[TS]
◼
►
it's the people fighting each other but
[TS]
◼
►
every person who's fighting each other
[TS]
◼
►
for the most part is given a legitimate
[TS]
◼
►
motivation for doing so who's who's the
[TS]
◼
►
real enemy hear that though the woman
[TS]
◼
►
who was horribly mangled by the insect
[TS]
◼
►
clearly understand her motivation she's
[TS]
◼
►
not a cartoon the the the Sioux City's
[TS]
◼
►
their warring with each other and let
[TS]
◼
►
the bugs over on their own city so they
[TS]
◼
►
can get the enemy there you know what
[TS]
◼
►
everyone has some yeah but you can
[TS]
◼
►
easily we're doing
[TS]
◼
►
you definitely read it is the people in
[TS]
◼
►
the valley are are being invaded by
[TS]
◼
►
these more militaristic people who don't
[TS]
◼
►
you know who don't get it and that's the
[TS]
◼
►
kind of we like why can't we just get
[TS]
◼
►
along and they're the ones who you know
[TS]
◼
►
the bugs do a lot of damage but the bugs
[TS]
◼
►
are kinda egged on by these by the kind
[TS]
◼
►
of militaristic people who invade the
[TS]
◼
►
little peaceful peaceful valley that's
[TS]
◼
►
trying to just get along and survive and
[TS]
◼
►
and and they lose their innocence when
[TS]
◼
►
the giant flying airship thing crashes
[TS]
◼
►
and and no you see it you see another
[TS]
◼
►
princess the other princesses briefly on
[TS]
◼
►
screen what happens to the princess you
[TS]
◼
►
see here briefly she's in Chains and use
[TS]
◼
►
you have you see the main character see
[TS]
◼
►
that she's so badly injured that she's
[TS]
◼
►
going to die and then she dies
[TS]
◼
►
yeah not quite the same type of screen
[TS]
◼
►
treatment that princess to get in disney
[TS]
◼
►
movies no no said you liked this one how
[TS]
◼
►
do you rate this one at this is this was
[TS]
◼
►
the first miyazaki movie I saw I saw it
[TS]
◼
►
when I was very young and I made a huge
[TS]
◼
►
impact on me even after all the anime
[TS]
◼
►
I'd seen I I didn't know enough about
[TS]
◼
►
anything really because there was no
[TS]
◼
►
internet to know what why I like
[TS]
◼
►
japanese animation so much but i but I
[TS]
◼
►
could pick out that among japanese
[TS]
◼
►
animation this one was different i had
[TS]
◼
►
no idea who made it or what it was or
[TS]
◼
►
anything like that i'm like there's
[TS]
◼
►
something different about this one and
[TS]
◼
►
that sensibility I just grabbed onto now
[TS]
◼
►
in his cannon it's not one of my
[TS]
◼
►
favorite favorite movies but there are
[TS]
◼
►
certain aspects of that I really loved
[TS]
◼
►
by a lot of my love anime acid was
[TS]
◼
►
visual design and character design i
[TS]
◼
►
really loved the world that He has
[TS]
◼
►
created there i love the bugs I love the
[TS]
◼
►
wing yeah that that whole that the way
[TS]
◼
►
the airplanes look that stuff goes a
[TS]
◼
►
long way from me just the art and the
[TS]
◼
►
imagining of this place and the plot is
[TS]
◼
►
one of his more conventional plots at
[TS]
◼
►
that he's repeats many different times
[TS]
◼
►
but i still enjoy it and it's and it's
[TS]
◼
►
for some reason I had no problem showing
[TS]
◼
►
this movie to my fairly young kids even
[TS]
◼
►
though it's filled with blood and things
[TS]
◼
►
dying stuff because I think all the
[TS]
◼
►
violence in this movie is handled in a
[TS]
◼
►
way that I think it should be handled
[TS]
◼
►
you know like it's not it's not
[TS]
◼
►
glorified it's not gratuitous there are
[TS]
◼
►
consequences for all of it and the main
[TS]
◼
►
character is against it basically right
[TS]
◼
►
so we should move on to castle in the
[TS]
◼
►
sky which is next
[TS]
◼
►
chronologically yeah 1986 also referred
[TS]
◼
►
to as at what a la la puta por la ayude
[TS]
◼
►
they pronounce it differently than you
[TS]
◼
►
would actually pronounce it and because
[TS]
◼
►
it's I think it's a reference to
[TS]
◼
►
Jonathan Swift yes but then that means
[TS]
◼
►
something really bad and in Spanish
[TS]
◼
►
which is jonathan swift intended but i'm
[TS]
◼
►
nice ahi this is the reverse this is
[TS]
◼
►
Western culture get him getting put
[TS]
◼
►
through the grinder then coming back
[TS]
◼
►
it's like a game of telephone yeah it's
[TS]
◼
►
wacky but just a mean castle mr. i
[TS]
◼
►
really liked this 1i I like this a lot
[TS]
◼
►
this is this is a and this one is stuck
[TS]
◼
►
with me longer actually then then the
[TS]
◼
►
nautica did the you know the the the
[TS]
◼
►
there's a while plus there's like
[TS]
◼
►
Zeppelin's right that's true well if you
[TS]
◼
►
think of the opening this movie this is
[TS]
◼
►
nausea go alright take to know it opens
[TS]
◼
►
with the action scene that is a credit
[TS]
◼
►
sequence with music showing a bunch of
[TS]
◼
►
images explaining that how the world got
[TS]
◼
►
to the state you're going to see it and
[TS]
◼
►
then there's this big adventure and you
[TS]
◼
►
know it is very much an adventure movie
[TS]
◼
►
an action movie I and very different
[TS]
◼
►
than the typical kids movies i gave
[TS]
◼
►
think of all the things that happened to
[TS]
◼
►
these kids first of all this the the
[TS]
◼
►
main character parts who it was
[TS]
◼
►
he's living on his own he has no parents
[TS]
◼
►
but that's not that's not a big deal
[TS]
◼
►
it's like yeah of course he's just like
[TS]
◼
►
he's got a job yeah he's working there
[TS]
◼
►
is a princess type character who is more
[TS]
◼
►
of the typical princess type thing but
[TS]
◼
►
one of my favorite that one of the
[TS]
◼
►
things that sticks with in this movie on
[TS]
◼
►
my favorite part is that in the very
[TS]
◼
►
opening you have what's the girl's name
[TS]
◼
►
actually remember
[TS]
◼
►
yeah she that is a escaping from these
[TS]
◼
►
people who look like a fairy's
[TS]
◼
►
government people whatever inches on the
[TS]
◼
►
outside of this thing i think was an
[TS]
◼
►
airship wasn't it yes well it's yeah
[TS]
◼
►
it's an airship alright and she's and
[TS]
◼
►
they're trying to get her whatever and
[TS]
◼
►
chief she slips and falls supposed to
[TS]
◼
►
presumably to read it properly
[TS]
◼
►
your death then they roll the credits
[TS]
◼
►
and the credits show you know that
[TS]
◼
►
people made this technology that made
[TS]
◼
►
these floating things makes loads than
[TS]
◼
►
all the Crashdown the people came out
[TS]
◼
►
and they're back to being farmers right
[TS]
◼
►
so after that Christ sequences first of
[TS]
◼
►
all the shocking thing of like here's
[TS]
◼
►
our princess girl very important
[TS]
◼
►
she's falling to her death that's how
[TS]
◼
►
you open a kids movie right and and we
[TS]
◼
►
haven't been introduced any characters
[TS]
◼
►
that are going to swoop in and save her
[TS]
◼
►
halfway there is no like Superman it's
[TS]
◼
►
not a Superman movie there's no
[TS]
◼
►
assumption that she's going to live
[TS]
◼
►
after the credits over what did they cut
[TS]
◼
►
back to the girl she's still falling
[TS]
◼
►
just in case you're wondering if he's
[TS]
◼
►
unconscious she's falling to her death
[TS]
◼
►
let's follow her now with the camera as
[TS]
◼
►
she falls through death which is
[TS]
◼
►
unbelievably audacious I think too i
[TS]
◼
►
mean even an action movie you wouldn't
[TS]
◼
►
roll the credits and then now in
[TS]
◼
►
progress we just we don't want her to
[TS]
◼
►
die off camera even in what is that
[TS]
◼
►
movie The Good Shepherd where they throw
[TS]
◼
►
the woman out of the plane with her
[TS]
◼
►
bride bridal soon on sorry if I spoiled
[TS]
◼
►
that for anybody
[TS]
◼
►
they don't show her falling like that
[TS]
◼
►
you see her from the plane audio soon
[TS]
◼
►
well she's going to Dinah they cut back
[TS]
◼
►
to and the girls still falling to her
[TS]
◼
►
death and she's unconscious and she's
[TS]
◼
►
going headfirst and here she is
[TS]
◼
►
and of course you know she doesn't
[TS]
◼
►
actually died but house is how the rest
[TS]
◼
►
of the week was out that's an amazing
[TS]
◼
►
amazing sequence that I could never
[TS]
◼
►
imagine a Western director doing the
[TS]
◼
►
rest of the movie much more conventional
[TS]
◼
►
except for perhaps if you watch the
[TS]
◼
►
original you know if you watch the
[TS]
◼
►
japanese version of how the the pirate
[TS]
◼
►
mother isn't everything that all sorts
[TS]
◼
►
of inappropriate strange maybe it was
[TS]
◼
►
also because it was the eighties non-pc
[TS]
◼
►
interactions of that group of pirates
[TS]
◼
►
that's what I i read i'm on wikipedia
[TS]
◼
►
although what I wanted to say is there's
[TS]
◼
►
actually something else very funny that
[TS]
◼
►
happens in the opening of castle in the
[TS]
◼
►
sky which is that you've got the pirate
[TS]
◼
►
it's a pirate attack on the airship and
[TS]
◼
►
you think the Pirates are bad except
[TS]
◼
►
she's actually being held captive it
[TS]
◼
►
turns out by the people who are on the
[TS]
◼
►
airship she doesn't like them either but
[TS]
◼
►
your setup to feel like you this pirate
[TS]
◼
►
attack and they're trying to grab her
[TS]
◼
►
her her jewel and then she falls to her
[TS]
◼
►
death and you're thinking those pirates
[TS]
◼
►
are bad was about those are bad pirates
[TS]
◼
►
are bad guys which is totally not true
[TS]
◼
►
well is it then don't they never have
[TS]
◼
►
the scene where it's like okay I return
[TS]
◼
►
ice got like the Pirates still have
[TS]
◼
►
their mercenary motivation hallway
[TS]
◼
►
through their true
[TS]
◼
►
themselves that there isn't but their
[TS]
◼
►
honor when pirates yeah kind of
[TS]
◼
►
honorable but also kind of shady and not
[TS]
◼
►
really fuzzy and kind of like all sharks
[TS]
◼
►
we all love you pirates you know it's
[TS]
◼
►
clear who's on different teams and the
[TS]
◼
►
government guys is the most people can
[TS]
◼
►
surprise you want to take over the world
[TS]
◼
►
with this super powerful weapon or
[TS]
◼
►
whatever but you know no one is is
[TS]
◼
►
they're not bending over backwards to
[TS]
◼
►
make anyone cuddly right now the leader
[TS]
◼
►
of the Pirates is still graph the whole
[TS]
◼
►
way through and pods and innocent little
[TS]
◼
►
boy he is the whole way through yeah
[TS]
◼
►
this is this is very not a lot of
[TS]
◼
►
character development this movie much
[TS]
◼
►
more of an action rollercoaster I think
[TS]
◼
►
now it goes a stronger movie just
[TS]
◼
►
because there are character arcs and
[TS]
◼
►
people you know do it's the how they are
[TS]
◼
►
starting the movie the things they
[TS]
◼
►
thought they were capable of doing
[TS]
◼
►
by the end of the movie they've grown
[TS]
◼
►
whereas in this movie know they kind of
[TS]
◼
►
going and eventually discover
[TS]
◼
►
interesting things and and eventually
[TS]
◼
►
tried to help of others but it but it's
[TS]
◼
►
a great adventure though but you're
[TS]
◼
►
right as much of a story of a character
[TS]
◼
►
arc i love the robot in your robot
[TS]
◼
►
orgasm is too that's again the character
[TS]
◼
►
design and just the way you know because
[TS]
◼
►
that is some amazing stuff there is just
[TS]
◼
►
sort of this mournful incredibly
[TS]
◼
►
powerful strange-looking thing my kids
[TS]
◼
►
were very affected by the fact when we
[TS]
◼
►
meet the first robot which is there to
[TS]
◼
►
protect her and it does protect her and
[TS]
◼
►
it dies it's destroyed
[TS]
◼
►
although it is it guys several times
[TS]
◼
►
because it keeps coming back to life and
[TS]
◼
►
getting destroyed even more brutally
[TS]
◼
►
until it's finally completely destroyed
[TS]
◼
►
and I am my son was very sad that the
[TS]
◼
►
robot died because the no I like that
[TS]
◼
►
robot and is very he was very sad when
[TS]
◼
►
the robot that fortunately they made
[TS]
◼
►
many more of that terrible
[TS]
◼
►
that's the thing with robots into my
[TS]
◼
►
daughter for the lot was very effective
[TS]
◼
►
but it probably showed this movie to her
[TS]
◼
►
when she was too young but she for the
[TS]
◼
►
longest time called this the robot movie
[TS]
◼
►
that was the new school shoes concern i
[TS]
◼
►
can see that room wanna see the robot
[TS]
◼
►
movie what we talked about these movies
[TS]
◼
►
with my kids and I were watching ponyo
[TS]
◼
►
and and my son made reference to the one
[TS]
◼
►
with a robot so it is just like every
[TS]
◼
►
featured in this movie like it's not
[TS]
◼
►
it's not in many seasons are no but it's
[TS]
◼
►
such a great-looking character and of
[TS]
◼
►
course it behaves honorably and is is
[TS]
◼
►
it's very heroic and trying to protect
[TS]
◼
►
the other characters
[TS]
◼
►
from preserve the monarch yeah clapping
[TS]
◼
►
a class system is accepted and it's
[TS]
◼
►
moving don't know royalty
[TS]
◼
►
he's like yes he's the he's the
[TS]
◼
►
protector of the of the royalty of the
[TS]
◼
►
of the floating city but I i love the
[TS]
◼
►
yeah I love that robot look really great
[TS]
◼
►
great-looking robot and I don't know I
[TS]
◼
►
assume that it was an least partly an
[TS]
◼
►
inspiration for the iron giant it may
[TS]
◼
►
seem to have something in common i know
[TS]
◼
►
that there was a book about the the book
[TS]
◼
►
that the Iron Giant is based on was done
[TS]
◼
►
in the sixties and I don't know if
[TS]
◼
►
there's any relationship there but but
[TS]
◼
►
when i see that with a robot and castle
[TS]
◼
►
in the sky I that's immediately / god is
[TS]
◼
►
that was very iron giant it's gotta be I
[TS]
◼
►
mean he was not intentional just it's in
[TS]
◼
►
it's in the water for the the animators
[TS]
◼
►
of this generation
[TS]
◼
►
yeah just did you felt like a very
[TS]
◼
►
similar kind of really cool apparently
[TS]
◼
►
on the the roof of the studio ghibli
[TS]
◼
►
museum or whatever it is
[TS]
◼
►
in Japan there say there's one of these
[TS]
◼
►
guys is a robot now it's not protected
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that's good big brother on the roof
[TS]
◼
►
but it but I like this i have I thought
[TS]
◼
►
it was a lot of fun it's just a really
[TS]
◼
►
fun adventure and and I thought pretty
[TS]
◼
►
well paced I didn't feel like it it had
[TS]
◼
►
dragged at the end or anything I mean
[TS]
◼
►
they got this crazy adventure inside the
[TS]
◼
►
floating city where we just at one point
[TS]
◼
►
is like falling apart and you know
[TS]
◼
►
there's all this high-flying action
[TS]
◼
►
because they've got you know it's all
[TS]
◼
►
happening in the air and their the
[TS]
◼
►
various airships and and although you're
[TS]
◼
►
right i mean we have five flying action
[TS]
◼
►
in Nazca to yeah i think this movie
[TS]
◼
►
could wait forever Western director or
[TS]
◼
►
studio did this they would have
[TS]
◼
►
tightened it up there's a lot of like
[TS]
◼
►
it's just gloriously flabby just
[TS]
◼
►
everything is everyone gonna have a
[TS]
◼
►
train scene we're gonna have this fight
[TS]
◼
►
we're gonna have people you know chasing
[TS]
◼
►
each other through kathy had a robot is
[TS]
◼
►
destroying we're going you know
[TS]
◼
►
yeah it's how much that they're like all
[TS]
◼
►
right could we tighten this up maybe
[TS]
◼
►
have an ARCA story here is really the
[TS]
◼
►
story of like discovery of this the
[TS]
◼
►
castle in the sky and her favorite
[TS]
◼
►
people going after the jewel but there's
[TS]
◼
►
just so much like we can do everything
[TS]
◼
►
to do yet stupid a scene with the tree
[TS]
◼
►
which is a great the train stuff is
[TS]
◼
►
great but you're right it's like okay
[TS]
◼
►
it's everything I didn't actually mean
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that this movie I don't know it
[TS]
◼
►
should have been tightened up but it
[TS]
◼
►
been tightened up I think it came out of
[TS]
◼
►
Westminster but here you know they just
[TS]
◼
►
said this is what he wants we're going
[TS]
◼
►
to go with it and it's just kind of a a
[TS]
◼
►
a giant fun ride
[TS]
◼
►
well let's let's move onto 1988 and I
[TS]
◼
►
the movie that i assume is it's got to
[TS]
◼
►
be the most famous and most loved of his
[TS]
◼
►
movies which is my neighbor totoro among
[TS]
◼
►
Westerners maybe yeah wasn't this i
[TS]
◼
►
thought this was like one of the biggest
[TS]
◼
►
grossing movies involving all those 10
[TS]
◼
►
came out it was the biggest grossing
[TS]
◼
►
movie spirited away came out it was the
[TS]
◼
►
reason your hand alright so i think
[TS]
◼
►
there's generally blood in Japan but
[TS]
◼
►
yeah because it has something you can
[TS]
◼
►
make into a stuffed animal i think yes
[TS]
◼
►
it is under there are many totoro
[TS]
◼
►
stuffed animals so my neighbor totoro is
[TS]
◼
►
one of those two movies that I that I'm
[TS]
◼
►
i mentioned earlier that I that I just
[TS]
◼
►
love of his and one of the things i love
[TS]
◼
►
about this movie and kiki's delivery
[TS]
◼
►
service which we can talk about in a
[TS]
◼
►
little bit because that's the next one
[TS]
◼
►
up one of the things I love about these
[TS]
◼
►
movies is that you've talked about ways
[TS]
◼
►
that you wouldn't structure something if
[TS]
◼
►
you were making a western movie for
[TS]
◼
►
being a hollywood movie who is the
[TS]
◼
►
antagonist in my I would go from 0 to
[TS]
◼
►
what is the plot of this movie
[TS]
◼
►
what is the plot of the plot of this
[TS]
◼
►
movie is that girls have moved into a
[TS]
◼
►
house because and their mother is sick
[TS]
◼
►
and a hospital and their dad has to
[TS]
◼
►
commute and they feel lonely and they
[TS]
◼
►
want their mother to come home which is
[TS]
◼
►
it about a plot like it to imagine if
[TS]
◼
►
you have to write like the two sentence
[TS]
◼
►
thing that used to fit in like the TV
[TS]
◼
►
listings and taking yakety want to get
[TS]
◼
►
out of the three sentences
[TS]
◼
►
what's the three sentences or two
[TS]
◼
►
sentences for total you can't do it
[TS]
◼
►
you're like a giant creature be friends
[TS]
◼
►
and like that's not what it's about yeah
[TS]
◼
►
like you can't there's nothing you could
[TS]
◼
►
write for this and that
[TS]
◼
►
that's what what's so wonderful about
[TS]
◼
►
this movie yeah I it
[TS]
◼
►
totoro is probably it's it's close we
[TS]
◼
►
can keep toner which is my favorite
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki movie which is probably
[TS]
◼
►
surprising to someone who looks at the
[TS]
◼
►
camera like Shirley like two big action
[TS]
◼
►
movies or princess mononoke or which is
[TS]
◼
►
like the fifth attempt to redo nas ago
[TS]
◼
►
you know it says it happened it's not
[TS]
◼
►
ya have someting those other ones don't
[TS]
◼
►
because that they everything maybe it's
[TS]
◼
►
common in Japanese stuff i don't know
[TS]
◼
►
enough about culture this is common but
[TS]
◼
►
what what this movie is about when kids
[TS]
◼
►
watching what it's about is a big fuzzy
[TS]
◼
►
yes that does hilarious things that's
[TS]
◼
►
crazy cat buses even kids recognize this
[TS]
◼
►
is nuts right and it's just it's wacky
[TS]
◼
►
everything that some wacky think it's
[TS]
◼
►
like a Looney Tunes cartoon like they're
[TS]
◼
►
in the house you're looking around these
[TS]
◼
►
weird things in the house is something
[TS]
◼
►
in the forest they have a bath it's
[TS]
◼
►
windy outside what you know what
[TS]
◼
►
but the kids are like poop you know that
[TS]
◼
►
if you show this to most adults are
[TS]
◼
►
teens are like what the house is some
[TS]
◼
►
sort of Stuart stupid kids me or
[TS]
◼
►
whatever but if you watch it and it like
[TS]
◼
►
it connects with you which is definitely
[TS]
◼
►
connected with me and you think about
[TS]
◼
►
what the movie is actually about you
[TS]
◼
►
I think that obviously connected with
[TS]
◼
►
you because you were getting closer to
[TS]
◼
►
like this movie is about kids who have a
[TS]
◼
►
yes right no the antagonist in this
[TS]
◼
►
movie is their mother's illness that's
[TS]
◼
►
really yet but they do not like a no
[TS]
◼
►
point did they say like it's not if you
[TS]
◼
►
made a movie about kids have a second
[TS]
◼
►
mother first you'd never make that movie
[TS]
◼
►
I don't like a Disney types that you
[TS]
◼
►
never get kids more like the whole point
[TS]
◼
►
of the movies like live-action my mother
[TS]
◼
►
is sick i'm sad and we've just been
[TS]
◼
►
talking about how your mother is sick
[TS]
◼
►
and you're upset but that's not how
[TS]
◼
►
children work they don't relate to their
[TS]
◼
►
feelings or things that are especially
[TS]
◼
►
kids this age movie you know they don't
[TS]
◼
►
relate to their situation in life in the
[TS]
◼
►
way they would like it now a very
[TS]
◼
►
special movie or 10 mins mother is so
[TS]
◼
►
good at talking to tell me about they
[TS]
◼
►
relate to it in a very very different
[TS]
◼
►
way and this is something i get into
[TS]
◼
►
with adults who watch this movie they
[TS]
◼
►
say so what is like what is going on
[TS]
◼
►
here and that is the real world or is
[TS]
◼
►
totoro like magic why doesn't total help
[TS]
◼
►
make their their mother better as total
[TS]
◼
►
really there or is he just in the kids
[TS]
◼
►
imagination at and like how do I like if
[TS]
◼
►
the kids are just kids imagination has
[TS]
◼
►
total help them find the kit but they it
[TS]
◼
►
blows their mind but this is a perfect
[TS]
◼
►
representation of the world the kids
[TS]
◼
►
inhabit because the stress of having a
[TS]
◼
►
sick mother and that like it manifests
[TS]
◼
►
in children in very strange ways and
[TS]
◼
►
it's not talked about it is not
[TS]
◼
►
intellectualized and sort of discussed
[TS]
◼
►
they go through their life hopefully
[TS]
◼
►
with a loving parent which they have in
[TS]
◼
►
this movie and this stuff just finds its
[TS]
◼
►
way out in two different places with
[TS]
◼
►
Toto sometimes scary but also sometimes
[TS]
◼
►
comforting and sometimes helps them you
[TS]
◼
►
know it get over things and and in the
[TS]
◼
►
end with me running off try to go to her
[TS]
◼
►
mother and getting lost that as a real
[TS]
◼
►
things happen in the real world which by
[TS]
◼
►
the way that's one of my favorite scenes
[TS]
◼
►
from the movie that they're looking for
[TS]
◼
►
majors a what if you like three in the
[TS]
◼
►
movie or something she's lost and there
[TS]
◼
►
are people in the rice paddy things with
[TS]
◼
►
sticks waving the sticks around you
[TS]
◼
►
don't find live children with sticks in
[TS]
◼
►
water you know that's not what they and
[TS]
◼
►
they find that they find a shoe and they
[TS]
◼
►
think it might be hers and they think
[TS]
◼
►
that she's drowned
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and and this is that the plot of
[TS]
◼
►
the movie girls second they find her
[TS]
◼
►
know this is just these children's life
[TS]
◼
►
it during a period of uncertainty about
[TS]
◼
►
something that should be certain and
[TS]
◼
►
everything you see the happen whether
[TS]
◼
►
you decide that it's a real or it's not
[TS]
◼
►
real is if you know this is this is what
[TS]
◼
►
it's like to be a kid with the sick
[TS]
◼
►
mother and it's really strange to say
[TS]
◼
►
that a movie about what it's like to be
[TS]
◼
►
good with the second mother has to
[TS]
◼
►
involve giant magical fuzzy creatures
[TS]
◼
►
and floating things and cat buses and
[TS]
◼
►
but it really it really should it really
[TS]
◼
►
does let mixture of be you know it's the
[TS]
◼
►
it's the it's a fairytale on one level
[TS]
◼
►
and kids are the ones who we tell fairy
[TS]
◼
►
tales 2 i'm on another level it's I mean
[TS]
◼
►
really the plot of this movie is that
[TS]
◼
►
these girls lives change that because
[TS]
◼
►
their mother is sick they have to move
[TS]
◼
►
out to the country and their dad has to
[TS]
◼
►
be a way because he has to take the bus
[TS]
◼
►
to the University and it's a long way
[TS]
◼
►
off and so they have to have a new house
[TS]
◼
►
and they have a new school and they have
[TS]
◼
►
this big tree outside their window the
[TS]
◼
►
very things out there and yeah it's kind
[TS]
◼
►
of scary but kind of fun at the same
[TS]
◼
►
time like it you everything warning if
[TS]
◼
►
you can connect to your own childhood
[TS]
◼
►
memories are feelings you have from back
[TS]
◼
►
and this is kind of what it's like
[TS]
◼
►
they're everything is kind of scary and
[TS]
◼
►
kind of fun and kind of uncertainty and
[TS]
◼
►
nothing makes sense to you and you don't
[TS]
◼
►
know why things are happening and then
[TS]
◼
►
your melody of magic right and you're on
[TS]
◼
►
your imagination blends with reality in
[TS]
◼
►
the seamless like this like it's a
[TS]
◼
►
continuum it's not like well here's the
[TS]
◼
►
real world news imagination it's all
[TS]
◼
►
it's all one thing well I said it's such
[TS]
◼
►
a charming movie I mean it
[TS]
◼
►
is and it's not just the cute fuzzy
[TS]
◼
►
creatures although they are incredibly
[TS]
◼
►
cute and incredibly fuzzy but but it you
[TS]
◼
►
know the dad is a great character and
[TS]
◼
►
he's being you can see in his scenes
[TS]
◼
►
that he's being he's obviously troubled
[TS]
◼
►
about his and his wife sickness but he's
[TS]
◼
►
being as good a father as he can be
[TS]
◼
►
and.and but he's struggling because he's
[TS]
◼
►
also got a got a commute night when that
[TS]
◼
►
the opening scenes when they're opening
[TS]
◼
►
up the house for the first time in the
[TS]
◼
►
girls are exploring and he's encouraging
[TS]
◼
►
of them and and yet it's also it's also
[TS]
◼
►
all very funny because you can see that
[TS]
◼
►
he's got a dry sense of humor and they
[TS]
◼
►
don't necessarily get that he's being
[TS]
◼
►
funny but he's actually being really
[TS]
◼
►
funny and then there's the little boy
[TS]
◼
►
who is seems standoffish but is actually
[TS]
◼
►
it's actually adorable and and be the
[TS]
◼
►
scenes with the little boy in the
[TS]
◼
►
umbrella stand for for people who don't
[TS]
◼
►
have kids too i'm at i guess they might
[TS]
◼
►
think that the good little boys a good
[TS]
◼
►
example that uh that he doesn't act like
[TS]
◼
►
little boys act in typical movies if you
[TS]
◼
►
had a neighbor boy was like spunky but
[TS]
◼
►
really was you know like the girl or
[TS]
◼
►
whatever like the people write dialogue
[TS]
◼
►
for kids as if there if not adults that
[TS]
◼
►
at least like preteens or something
[TS]
◼
►
this boy that sees the girl who was
[TS]
◼
►
caught in a rainstorm watched offers
[TS]
◼
►
umbrella as a scowl on his face James
[TS]
◼
►
the umbrella of a single huh huh I'm
[TS]
◼
►
just make grunting noises you're like oh
[TS]
◼
►
come on what kind of kid make if you
[TS]
◼
►
have a boy that age
[TS]
◼
►
this is the epitome of communication for
[TS]
◼
►
them because they don't know how do they
[TS]
◼
►
don't they don't they're not going to
[TS]
◼
►
chat up the they don't have a way to
[TS]
◼
►
express this at all and so you see this
[TS]
◼
►
grumpy boy jamming this thing in her and
[TS]
◼
►
then he runs off with a smile on his
[TS]
◼
►
that's what kids that age do they're not
[TS]
◼
►
adults and and also like so that happens
[TS]
◼
►
but that's not the point of the movie
[TS]
◼
►
it's not a love story between his two
[TS]
◼
►
little kids they're just little kids
[TS]
◼
►
leaving their lives in the way the
[TS]
◼
►
little kids do that one precocious kid
[TS]
◼
►
Watsky who is kind of our you know here
[TS]
◼
►
or whatever sure even even she has the
[TS]
◼
►
moment of like you know there is one of
[TS]
◼
►
my favorite things than we were
[TS]
◼
►
she's looking for her little sister and
[TS]
◼
►
the sun is setting which they indicate
[TS]
◼
►
just with a little bit of you know
[TS]
◼
►
changing the lighting of everything
[TS]
◼
►
nobody exposition about we must find her
[TS]
◼
►
before dark because if the darkness
[TS]
◼
►
comes in but no she's she's running her
[TS]
◼
►
feet are dirty she takes over
[TS]
◼
►
shoes and she's panicked find your
[TS]
◼
►
sister and they don't know where she's
[TS]
◼
►
anywhere at that point your panic too
[TS]
◼
►
right yeah if you're if you're invested
[TS]
◼
►
in the movie I every every part of this
[TS]
◼
►
movie I just connects with me if it
[TS]
◼
►
doesn't connect with you it might seem
[TS]
◼
►
like we're talking nonsense you're gonna
[TS]
◼
►
watch this movie and say this is this
[TS]
◼
►
movie they love if it connects with you
[TS]
◼
►
what we did say up front that that
[TS]
◼
►
nothing happens and over at least it has
[TS]
◼
►
no plot to speak of and there's not
[TS]
◼
►
really any conflict and it's just sort
[TS]
◼
►
of a story about some girls whose mom
[TS]
◼
►
attic and they're learning about where
[TS]
◼
►
they live and also there are some
[TS]
◼
►
magical creatures who are adorable and
[TS]
◼
►
that give an umbrella to one of them so
[TS]
◼
►
what do you choose to blow actually two
[TS]
◼
►
things that's before I get that what you
[TS]
◼
►
choose on but this is one of the things
[TS]
◼
►
where the dub i think make some jokes
[TS]
◼
►
that I'm glad they they change from the
[TS]
◼
►
original or whatever like the voice
[TS]
◼
►
acting with us and everything looks a
[TS]
◼
►
little global picture of like a maze
[TS]
◼
►
doing whatever it's making her crabby
[TS]
◼
►
here's a picture of me as a crab
[TS]
◼
►
oh yeah Michael lines like that they
[TS]
◼
►
crack me up or or the one she was creepy
[TS]
◼
►
that's kind of you know those are jokes
[TS]
◼
►
made in in the dub that either are
[TS]
◼
►
written differently or land differently
[TS]
◼
►
in the subtitle versions and since I've
[TS]
◼
►
seen the double design times because I
[TS]
◼
►
kids can't read subtitles or couldn't
[TS]
◼
►
when they were watching this I like most
[TS]
◼
►
access to this dub even though some of
[TS]
◼
►
the voices are grading and some of the
[TS]
◼
►
things they do or a little bit you know
[TS]
◼
►
weird i don't want to ask is what is
[TS]
◼
►
your take on the on the movie is what
[TS]
◼
►
happens in the movies total a real
[TS]
◼
►
distro take them to see their mother
[TS]
◼
►
Oh or is he entirely a figment of your
[TS]
◼
►
imagination well i think i think it's in
[TS]
◼
►
this this is intentionally left it is it
[TS]
◼
►
is i'm just asking lat where are you
[TS]
◼
►
well i mean i think that's the beauty of
[TS]
◼
►
I mean I i guess i would argue that if
[TS]
◼
►
that in the end when they'll win the the
[TS]
◼
►
messages left for on the windowsill for
[TS]
◼
►
their mom that they couldn't have gotten
[TS]
◼
►
there by any other means and so
[TS]
◼
►
therefore total really took them there
[TS]
◼
►
if you really are looking for any
[TS]
◼
►
evidence but in the end it doesn't
[TS]
◼
►
really matter right it's just like the
[TS]
◼
►
way that the scene where they have a
[TS]
◼
►
giant tree grows out in the backyard
[TS]
◼
►
because it's just enormous in the
[TS]
◼
►
backyard and and they wake up the net
[TS]
◼
►
extend their dad is sitting there the
[TS]
◼
►
whole time and he doesn't notice
[TS]
◼
►
anything and they wake up the next day
[TS]
◼
►
and it's gone and you think haha see
[TS]
◼
►
nothing really happened but the things
[TS]
◼
►
they planted sprout over threat so you
[TS]
◼
►
know was it something maybe did happen
[TS]
◼
►
it just wasn't the big thing that they
[TS]
◼
►
that we saw that you know or that was
[TS]
◼
►
all that in the end was left after after
[TS]
◼
►
this kind of dream that they that they
[TS]
◼
►
all had or the solution or whatever it
[TS]
◼
►
was or magic with with totoro but you
[TS]
◼
►
know in the end does it doesn't matter
[TS]
◼
►
but the fact that they you know that
[TS]
◼
►
they left a little a little message for
[TS]
◼
►
their mom on the windowsill how else
[TS]
◼
►
would have gotten there yet the Western
[TS]
◼
►
audiences always wanted always wanted to
[TS]
◼
►
have included in different you know it
[TS]
◼
►
doesn't matter i also want to say I have
[TS]
◼
►
beautiful this movie is that pit the the
[TS]
◼
►
just the pictures of the Japanese
[TS]
◼
►
countryside it is i love i love it just
[TS]
◼
►
for that it now looks so good and like
[TS]
◼
►
the house like it's exotic to us because
[TS]
◼
►
we don't know what Japanese right tubs
[TS]
◼
►
look like from whatever year this was
[TS]
◼
►
supposed to look like and just get their
[TS]
◼
►
enable screens and yeah he obviously
[TS]
◼
►
loves nature and he loves putting lots
[TS]
◼
►
of our stuff and the people who do the
[TS]
◼
►
enemy and whether Mr that's a big
[TS]
◼
►
yeah miyazaki is yeah I as we're going
[TS]
◼
►
to get to anything more about 20 before
[TS]
◼
►
I don't think I've reason i ask you
[TS]
◼
►
about whether you thought he was really
[TS]
◼
►
notice because that's the type of thing
[TS]
◼
►
that Western audiences demand out of
[TS]
◼
►
their movies yeah well so is he real or
[TS]
◼
►
not we have to know and the little the
[TS]
◼
►
corn you know thing at the end seems
[TS]
◼
►
like he's leaning that direction but
[TS]
◼
►
it's not a conclusive no type of thing
[TS]
◼
►
and the whole point of the movie is that
[TS]
◼
►
to children's lives
[TS]
◼
►
this is all of a piece there's no
[TS]
◼
►
separation because they have no they
[TS]
◼
►
haven't settled things down like that
[TS]
◼
►
imagination is reality is imagination
[TS]
◼
►
emotion is manifestation in other sorts
[TS]
◼
►
of ways that's totally seemingly
[TS]
◼
►
unrelated to an outside observer the
[TS]
◼
►
thing they're actually upset about and
[TS]
◼
►
it's clear from the movie is a thing i
[TS]
◼
►
like about the parent the parent you
[TS]
◼
►
know that the two parents except for the
[TS]
◼
►
little thing did you see a gigantic cat
[TS]
◼
►
with a humongous claws and teeth in that
[TS]
◼
►
tree a second ago
[TS]
◼
►
now you know that's a little knot at the
[TS]
◼
►
end there but in general for the whole
[TS]
◼
►
rest of the movie they pay no attention
[TS]
◼
►
to what these crazy kids are doing
[TS]
◼
►
yeah it's great it's it's great I I it
[TS]
◼
►
doesn't matter might my son my son is
[TS]
◼
►
seven and it's reading calvin and hobbes
[TS]
◼
►
who discovered Calvin and Hobbes and
[TS]
◼
►
this this I think is very comfortable to
[TS]
◼
►
what you just said which is he thinks
[TS]
◼
►
calvin and hobbes is a story about a boy
[TS]
◼
►
with a magic tiger who only turns real
[TS]
◼
►
when nobody's looking
[TS]
◼
►
yeah but of course the rest of us would
[TS]
◼
►
view it as a boy who has an imagination
[TS]
◼
►
and he makes his stuff tiger he believes
[TS]
◼
►
his stuff tiger is real and has
[TS]
◼
►
conversations with him but to my
[TS]
◼
►
seven-year-old son
[TS]
◼
►
no it's a magic tiger who you can only
[TS]
◼
►
see like snuffleupagus right he's only
[TS]
◼
►
he can only move when nobody else is
[TS]
◼
►
looking except Calvin well he's like the
[TS]
◼
►
weeping angels yes slightly less Hobbs
[TS]
◼
►
is slightly less thread by murderous in
[TS]
◼
►
the weeping angels but yes and to Calvin
[TS]
◼
►
he's a boy with a real tiger like
[TS]
◼
►
California has no account doesn't think
[TS]
◼
►
it's just that one is far as columns her
[TS]
◼
►
psyche as real as parents
[TS]
◼
►
yeah his parents yes and more agreeable
[TS]
◼
►
sometimes so let's move onto I believe
[TS]
◼
►
the next year in 1989 kiki's delivery
[TS]
◼
►
service which I actually I i would say
[TS]
◼
►
this is my favorite of his movies and
[TS]
◼
►
this has more of a plot
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and more sophisticated than total
[TS]
◼
►
refrigerant boil it still doesn't really
[TS]
◼
►
have an antagonist somebody asked me
[TS]
◼
►
okay who's the bad guy in kiki's
[TS]
◼
►
delivery service i have two answers
[TS]
◼
►
there's a mean girl at one point who
[TS]
◼
►
says something mean but she has nothing
[TS]
◼
►
to do with the plot there is nothing out
[TS]
◼
►
the antagonist and there are many people
[TS]
◼
►
who are graphing mean write it and but
[TS]
◼
►
bear with me for a second i think the
[TS]
◼
►
antagonist kiki's delivery service is
[TS]
◼
►
the wind there's a strong wind that
[TS]
◼
►
causes trouble late in the movie that's
[TS]
◼
►
seriously these winds during the summer
[TS]
◼
►
it's the wind the wind is the worst the
[TS]
◼
►
wind is the enemy in this movie and it's
[TS]
◼
►
not that strong and then what
[TS]
◼
►
but it's not just want to get it there
[TS]
◼
►
are scenes with the wind in it but
[TS]
◼
►
I guess I think I've said this on past
[TS]
◼
►
fog podcast the the antagonism kiki's
[TS]
◼
►
delivery service is life not gonna life
[TS]
◼
►
happens that's not what the movies about
[TS]
◼
►
and what the wind could be a problem in
[TS]
◼
►
life to it you know and blows things off
[TS]
◼
►
the rain the rain does things that were
[TS]
◼
►
you know people who are or not
[TS]
◼
►
interested in the same things you're
[TS]
◼
►
interested in disinterested strangers
[TS]
◼
►
situations beyond your control it's just
[TS]
◼
►
it's at right happens right and what's
[TS]
◼
►
fascinating to about Kiki is that this
[TS]
◼
►
is a movie where Miyazaki's interest in
[TS]
◼
►
European yeah fairy tales and and
[TS]
◼
►
there's a lot of stuff in here that is
[TS]
◼
►
modeled on a couple icon stockholm where
[TS]
◼
►
I've been and actually seen stuff and be
[TS]
◼
►
like oh my god that's like a key still
[TS]
◼
►
every service scale and there's this
[TS]
◼
►
it's like a Scandinavian northern europe
[TS]
◼
►
for the most part it it's at mean it's
[TS]
◼
►
not it's sort of not said anywhere but
[TS]
◼
►
it's very clearly in it said in Europe
[TS]
◼
►
and it's about a girl who's a witch and
[TS]
◼
►
has a black cat and ride a broom so the
[TS]
◼
►
writing is all in Japanese right right
[TS]
◼
►
on japanese but it's he's definitely
[TS]
◼
►
trying to to tell this use this instead
[TS]
◼
►
this in a story and and the Western kind
[TS]
◼
►
of view of a witch on a broom with a
[TS]
◼
►
black cat and sets it in a European town
[TS]
◼
►
which is fascinating to Justin daddy
[TS]
◼
►
it's like a different a little bit
[TS]
◼
►
different palette that he's painting
[TS]
◼
►
with ya and so when i'm comparing this
[TS]
◼
►
to totoro the reason I can flop back and
[TS]
◼
►
forth because I'm like well tour was the
[TS]
◼
►
pure essence of of his work like if you
[TS]
◼
►
just keep tearing everything away until
[TS]
◼
►
all that's left is nonsense and emotion
[TS]
◼
►
you get total yeah he has more of a
[TS]
◼
►
structure and it's more sophisticated
[TS]
◼
►
not connect more with me as an adult
[TS]
◼
►
which is strange because if you describe
[TS]
◼
►
this movie to someone you can probably
[TS]
◼
►
actually write a little capsule for this
[TS]
◼
►
because you've got a clear main
[TS]
◼
►
character she's a witch Westerners know
[TS]
◼
►
what witches are she's young witch in
[TS]
◼
►
training and it's going to be a kids
[TS]
◼
►
so what kind of wacky adventures could
[TS]
◼
►
she get into right but beyond that
[TS]
◼
►
premise it's not structured at all like
[TS]
◼
►
you know she's a kid who acts her age
[TS]
◼
►
the adults are not buffoons she doesn't
[TS]
◼
►
sing I there's there's no evil wizard
[TS]
◼
►
a harm her she goes out on her own and
[TS]
◼
►
leave your family behind and you're
[TS]
◼
►
expecting it to be that she ends up in
[TS]
◼
►
this town and she's taken advantage of
[TS]
◼
►
and made to do terrible things
[TS]
◼
►
she's not she's given a place to live
[TS]
◼
►
and she's given a job and she starts to
[TS]
◼
►
deliver you know baked goods are all
[TS]
◼
►
things you could have a witch do it like
[TS]
◼
►
she's gonna have a battle with magic
[TS]
◼
►
wand and fly her broom to firestorm to
[TS]
◼
►
the Wizards now she's gonna do
[TS]
◼
►
everything right and the big the big
[TS]
◼
►
tension is going to be like will she
[TS]
◼
►
deliver the cake on time right and and
[TS]
◼
►
better are like where am I going to stay
[TS]
◼
►
or had to do i navigate the adult world
[TS]
◼
►
because she can't get into the hotel
[TS]
◼
►
because she it's you know what you want
[TS]
◼
►
to stay in the hotel by yourself but
[TS]
◼
►
you're just a kid and she doesn't know
[TS]
◼
►
what to do with that one of the greatest
[TS]
◼
►
things mrs. there she's despondently
[TS]
◼
►
eating her sandwich that she packed for
[TS]
◼
►
herself after landing in the city full
[TS]
◼
►
of hope and finding she was not even
[TS]
◼
►
able to successfully issue you almost
[TS]
◼
►
got in trouble with the police messed up
[TS]
◼
►
traffic was not even able to get into
[TS]
◼
►
hotel like she's not able to function in
[TS]
◼
►
the adult world but she's just the kids
[TS]
◼
►
like I'd they wouldn't let me in but
[TS]
◼
►
like I don't actually just sitting there
[TS]
◼
►
and you realize she's eating lunch and
[TS]
◼
►
she packed for herself she has no other
[TS]
◼
►
food she doesn't know where she's gonna
[TS]
◼
►
stay she doesn't know how to become the
[TS]
◼
►
witch for this town or whatever and just
[TS]
◼
►
threw serendipity or whatever she
[TS]
◼
►
happens to get a job at a bakery and
[TS]
◼
►
figures well what can I actually do i
[TS]
◼
►
guess i can fly that's good i guess i'll
[TS]
◼
►
deliver things because if you can fly
[TS]
◼
►
you can don't like it its home you know
[TS]
◼
►
a mix of of pragmatic reality and people
[TS]
◼
►
acting their age and oh by the way we
[TS]
◼
►
have which is neckline everyone cool
[TS]
◼
►
with that yeah yeah it's fine it's fine
[TS]
◼
►
and there and it's great and then
[TS]
◼
►
they're so then there's wind
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and and her friend I mean that's
[TS]
◼
►
really the climax right as her friend is
[TS]
◼
►
accidentally lifted into the air by a
[TS]
◼
►
yeah her love interest to is interested
[TS]
◼
►
in her but it's not like oh we're going
[TS]
◼
►
to be together and she will spend zero
[TS]
◼
►
time mooning over tom but she sounds
[TS]
◼
►
like the boy on the bike who kinda likes
[TS]
◼
►
her and that I mean right and again like
[TS]
◼
►
with us some other movies that we've
[TS]
◼
►
talked about it's the it's it's a more
[TS]
◼
►
realistic sort of like there's a boy and
[TS]
◼
►
he's sort of interesting and that's
[TS]
◼
►
really kind of it and this this is
[TS]
◼
►
probably a good point to talk about or
[TS]
◼
►
why I indoctrinated my children with
[TS]
◼
►
Studio Ghibli movies from
[TS]
◼
►
young age it and tried to keep them away
[TS]
◼
►
from disney movies particularly my
[TS]
◼
►
daughter because miyazaki goes in the
[TS]
◼
►
other direction all the characters movie
[TS]
◼
►
or women and there are you know the main
[TS]
◼
►
characters the protagonist the important
[TS]
◼
►
people and this women are in general
[TS]
◼
►
with some exceptions treated very well
[TS]
◼
►
so the ones i like to say Nozick up here
[TS]
◼
►
is the woman she's strong she does
[TS]
◼
►
everything a man would do but still with
[TS]
◼
►
the sensibilities of a woman
[TS]
◼
►
totoro the two girls are the main
[TS]
◼
►
characters and kiki's delivery service
[TS]
◼
►
she'sshe's the clear list of the center
[TS]
◼
►
of this movie and the movies are not
[TS]
◼
►
about getting married
[TS]
◼
►
finding love or like any of these girl
[TS]
◼
►
things like they're they're treated as
[TS]
◼
►
Kiki what she doesn't this movie is
[TS]
◼
►
grows up a little bit in the way that
[TS]
◼
►
people actually grow up by making
[TS]
◼
►
friends getting a job not being
[TS]
◼
►
confident yourself now but her brain
[TS]
◼
►
challenge in life is that she's you know
[TS]
◼
►
it doesn't quite know how to relate to
[TS]
◼
►
people and fit in how do you become this
[TS]
◼
►
person who is a working person but has
[TS]
◼
►
friends and in does all the stuff you
[TS]
◼
►
can't figure out and my favorite part of
[TS]
◼
►
this movie is when she loses her witch's
[TS]
◼
►
powers which in the whole thing with
[TS]
◼
►
powers in which is completely ridiculous
[TS]
◼
►
but they use that as a way to I was
[TS]
◼
►
talking is like this is probably going
[TS]
◼
►
to sound crude but it when she loses her
[TS]
◼
►
witch's powers that's their way of
[TS]
◼
►
telling you that she got her period like
[TS]
◼
►
she is coming of age and how do you
[TS]
◼
►
become that's why she got the woman
[TS]
◼
►
character that she relates to the artist
[TS]
◼
►
in the woods that is a woman who was her
[TS]
◼
►
role Marty course you have the pregnant
[TS]
◼
►
woman can you imagine you know three
[TS]
◼
►
decades 0 pregnant woman we can show
[TS]
◼
►
that an animated film they don't even
[TS]
◼
►
know where babies come from the pregnant
[TS]
◼
►
woman baker and everything's taken care
[TS]
◼
►
of her she's from a child while a child
[TS]
◼
►
to she's going to eventually become an
[TS]
◼
►
adult in a woman and when she can't fly
[TS]
◼
►
anymore is because like you know she's
[TS]
◼
►
just becoming a woman literally and it's
[TS]
◼
►
thrown her for a loop as it does to you
[TS]
◼
►
know kids when they're at that age and
[TS]
◼
►
it's like Who am I
[TS]
◼
►
why don't people like me the rich girls
[TS]
◼
►
tombos interested but i'm not sure
[TS]
◼
►
what's going on there and just just not
[TS]
◼
►
sure of herself the whole movie and
[TS]
◼
►
that's the plot the plot is coming of
[TS]
◼
►
age and like what and if you we've all
[TS]
◼
►
gone through it right that is definitely
[TS]
◼
►
worthy of a movie and
[TS]
◼
►
this is that movie and it's not the
[TS]
◼
►
cliché movie where in the end you go to
[TS]
◼
►
the problem with the football hero and
[TS]
◼
►
everybody loves you in the town coast
[TS]
◼
►
you Kiki we love you your greatest witch
[TS]
◼
►
or whatever you know and of course the
[TS]
◼
►
end of the movie she saves the boy you
[TS]
◼
►
know that's the plot of this movie the
[TS]
◼
►
girl saves the boy right from from death
[TS]
◼
►
that we are with their skill and
[TS]
◼
►
determination and not you know with her
[TS]
◼
►
princess fairy powers save save him from
[TS]
◼
►
yeah it's not always going to go to go
[TS]
◼
►
no definitely not the dirigibles they
[TS]
◼
►
like to call it that as a yes that's
[TS]
◼
►
right go through the windows pick up off
[TS]
◼
►
the coast of year that that's when they
[TS]
◼
►
had the thing that's another one of the
[TS]
◼
►
lines the ID on the go around the corner
[TS]
◼
►
that's the dirigibles that line is
[TS]
◼
►
therefore yeah sure i'm saying anything
[TS]
◼
►
at that point that's right that's crazy
[TS]
◼
►
i don't know what the dirigibles kids
[TS]
◼
►
but I don't blame you imagine
[TS]
◼
►
apparently this movie yeah not only
[TS]
◼
►
stockholm but also visit beyond the
[TS]
◼
►
which is a non-violent in the Baltic Sea
[TS]
◼
►
it's a part of another town in Sweden
[TS]
◼
►
and I've been there too so what did you
[TS]
◼
►
want to live in this town by the way
[TS]
◼
►
this is well let me tell you this bee is
[TS]
◼
►
although not as big as this is charming
[TS]
◼
►
and stockholm is great too so I i watch
[TS]
◼
►
these movies and I i remember my brief
[TS]
◼
►
you know trips to Sweden and it's it is
[TS]
◼
►
it's a great sort of tip again beautiful
[TS]
◼
►
just as I said about totoro just
[TS]
◼
►
beautiful looking and again you've got
[TS]
◼
►
the the elements and he likes to show
[TS]
◼
►
fields and trees and and clouds and all
[TS]
◼
►
these things and it's it's gentle and
[TS]
◼
►
you know its pastoral and beautiful
[TS]
◼
►
he's good at that stuff alright we weave
[TS]
◼
►
you know we should probably blow through
[TS]
◼
►
the rest of these movies here because
[TS]
◼
►
we've been talking for a while now i
[TS]
◼
►
have not seen porco rosso which is about
[TS]
◼
►
the that's like about a flying pig right
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that's that's an odd one too but
[TS]
◼
►
it's more of a boy's adventure movie
[TS]
◼
►
alright flying pig with with an
[TS]
◼
►
emotional heart he said he's a pig who's
[TS]
◼
►
a pilot is that right
[TS]
◼
►
no question Jason alright okay makes
[TS]
◼
►
sense in context i swear i got out else
[TS]
◼
►
out i gotta watch that ok and then
[TS]
◼
►
there's one ok which i haven't seen
[TS]
◼
►
which is yet which is a big one
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that's him refining and refining
[TS]
◼
►
and refining that that action movie
[TS]
◼
►
formula and starting to go over i think
[TS]
◼
►
into a little bit
[TS]
◼
►
too much now I wouldn't say maybe not
[TS]
◼
►
that but I say it like he has a preachy
[TS]
◼
►
streak in him he has a message that he
[TS]
◼
►
wants to tell you about not destroying
[TS]
◼
►
the earth not fighting each other or
[TS]
◼
►
whatever and that can be grading if it
[TS]
◼
►
when he leans on it too heavily but
[TS]
◼
►
highly encourage you to watch and it's
[TS]
◼
►
another example of every character in
[TS]
◼
►
the movie has as legitimate motivation
[TS]
◼
►
no buffoons no cartoonishly evil things
[TS]
◼
►
it's also ratcheting up all the things
[TS]
◼
►
it's most likely knows a guy i encourage
[TS]
◼
►
you to watch it all right I will
[TS]
◼
►
I've got it rented it's right here i
[TS]
◼
►
just didn't get to it in time
[TS]
◼
►
ok spirited away we touched on briefly
[TS]
◼
►
it I saw it and I liked it but I thought
[TS]
◼
►
it was it was just really weird
[TS]
◼
►
yeah similar to Kiki and that you end up
[TS]
◼
►
you start off with a girl it's a girl
[TS]
◼
►
right who's young and kind of petrol and
[TS]
◼
►
like you're that age and she's put into
[TS]
◼
►
a situation where she has to fend for
[TS]
◼
►
herself because her parents are not
[TS]
◼
►
there exactly like Kiki goes off on her
[TS]
◼
►
own its kind of wild-eyed whoever this
[TS]
◼
►
one has the parents taken away from her
[TS]
◼
►
it's like we're now you're on your own
[TS]
◼
►
no one's going to help you what are you
[TS]
◼
►
gonna do you have to find your way
[TS]
◼
►
you're gonna have to get a job you have
[TS]
◼
►
to work hard at that job if they're our
[TS]
◼
►
friends are interesting things happening
[TS]
◼
►
around here you're just going to have to
[TS]
◼
►
deal with them and that's it
[TS]
◼
►
this is why I think kids connect so much
[TS]
◼
►
with these movies because young adult
[TS]
◼
►
literature does this so much of the
[TS]
◼
►
protagonist and young adult literature
[TS]
◼
►
always has to be someone at the age of
[TS]
◼
►
the person are reading the book a young
[TS]
◼
►
adult and we want to see how do they
[TS]
◼
►
make their way in the world and that
[TS]
◼
►
their parents usually aren't there
[TS]
◼
►
they're on their harry potter goes off
[TS]
◼
►
the wizard school by himself for the the
[TS]
◼
►
people in the hunger games are you know
[TS]
◼
►
they have to you want to see someone who
[TS]
◼
►
has similar age to you and say well what
[TS]
◼
►
happens if we take away the safety net
[TS]
◼
►
and that's what's fascinating feel like
[TS]
◼
►
she's by herself and look at all these
[TS]
◼
►
crazy things and as a witch and and this
[TS]
◼
►
is weird creature and she has to get a
[TS]
◼
►
job doing and I think kids that age
[TS]
◼
►
where they're not sort of self
[TS]
◼
►
actualizing or whatever the the
[TS]
◼
►
psychological they're not you know they
[TS]
◼
►
haven't been sort of fully be taken
[TS]
◼
►
ownership of their own selves and find
[TS]
◼
►
their path in the world thrust into
[TS]
◼
►
these situations now granted the
[TS]
◼
►
situations that movies are ridiculous
[TS]
◼
►
and crazy but kids can connect that
[TS]
◼
►
they're like you know that the big
[TS]
◼
►
tension is she going to talk to the big
[TS]
◼
►
spider guy to ask him for a job because
[TS]
◼
►
I could never do that cuz I'm scared you
[TS]
◼
►
and so the plot I i think this movie is
[TS]
◼
►
also almost incidental unless you're
[TS]
◼
►
talking about the big message about not
[TS]
◼
►
polluting and all that stuff
[TS]
◼
►
it's about here you go kid let's see how
[TS]
◼
►
you do and again a female character and
[TS]
◼
►
again a character who through
[TS]
◼
►
determination and good good character
[TS]
◼
►
and effort and force of will triumph
[TS]
◼
►
snot by marrying
[TS]
◼
►
anybody yeah and then also repair turned
[TS]
◼
►
into pigs but they don't fly
[TS]
◼
►
yeah one of my favorite images in this
[TS]
◼
►
movie and he does this Lots images is
[TS]
◼
►
the train going across the water
[TS]
◼
►
attracts there's water but it's just
[TS]
◼
►
just enough to just barely leave the
[TS]
◼
►
tracks and the train is going across
[TS]
◼
►
this giant expanse of water it's not
[TS]
◼
►
floating on the water is not a magic
[TS]
◼
►
trick is just that the water happens to
[TS]
◼
►
be exactly at the level of the tracks
[TS]
◼
►
maybe it's high tide
[TS]
◼
►
yeah I don't know I hey how's Moving
[TS]
◼
►
Castle ya maar European ish
[TS]
◼
►
yeah things i watch this today this one
[TS]
◼
►
set this one's a little too long
[TS]
◼
►
what kind of sags which part did you
[TS]
◼
►
think sank I out toward the end it just
[TS]
◼
►
I it it just kept going toward the end
[TS]
◼
►
where they have the there's like the the
[TS]
◼
►
the battle and and they're there and
[TS]
◼
►
they started the enemy starts bombing
[TS]
◼
►
the town and they have to move the move
[TS]
◼
►
the castle and end it I just I couldn't
[TS]
◼
►
say I felt like it took a another plot
[TS]
◼
►
turn when I expected it to be wrapping
[TS]
◼
►
up and incisors like no no we're gonna
[TS]
◼
►
keep on going and no actually it's been
[TS]
◼
►
two hours I really i'm ok with you being
[TS]
◼
►
done now we just say that there weren't
[TS]
◼
►
a lot of things about it that I i
[TS]
◼
►
actually liked it is a it is a little
[TS]
◼
►
it's also got like like with phil
[TS]
◼
►
hartman as Gigi the cat in kiki's
[TS]
◼
►
delivery service it's got the it's got
[TS]
◼
►
the fire demon Calcifer in the English
[TS]
◼
►
dub is Billy Crystal
[TS]
◼
►
yeah which although the way that
[TS]
◼
►
character is drawn you kind of want to
[TS]
◼
►
have a wacky personality like that that
[TS]
◼
►
fire demon yes just big eyes and a big
[TS]
◼
►
mouth and the Hartman gigi is one of
[TS]
◼
►
those things where that is not true to
[TS]
◼
►
the original but that's my bloody hell
[TS]
◼
►
but it's still it's hard it's pretty
[TS]
◼
►
good to you like I think it's like
[TS]
◼
►
that's that's a separate character
[TS]
◼
►
except movie that's one interpretation
[TS]
◼
►
you can do that same thing with Calcifer
[TS]
◼
►
that think the problem with with
[TS]
◼
►
how's Moving Castle is that it didn't
[TS]
◼
►
know whether wanted to be the action
[TS]
◼
►
adventure movie where we're interested
[TS]
◼
►
in the resolution of the plot like a
[TS]
◼
►
castle in the sky vodka or if we wanted
[TS]
◼
►
to be a this is what it's like to have
[TS]
◼
►
to go through some thing in your life
[TS]
◼
►
like Kiki or spirited away because you
[TS]
◼
►
do have the character who is a young
[TS]
◼
►
adult and she's suddenly gets old and
[TS]
◼
►
his magic but you also have this plot
[TS]
◼
►
business with how land is cursed and
[TS]
◼
►
you're like what am i interested in him
[TS]
◼
►
I interested in them in the main
[TS]
◼
►
characters overcoming our struggles in
[TS]
◼
►
this strange situation do I care about
[TS]
◼
►
how i miss bombing in the battles and
[TS]
◼
►
it's kind of all like you don't know
[TS]
◼
►
which way to go and then i can think
[TS]
◼
►
they just tried to fit it all into to
[TS]
◼
►
the same movie and this has a lot of
[TS]
◼
►
interesting bits and charm but i never
[TS]
◼
►
get invested in the story like a man in
[TS]
◼
►
the more story German movies and I never
[TS]
◼
►
connect with the emotion of the
[TS]
◼
►
character like a doing those and the
[TS]
◼
►
more character-driven movies yeah how is
[TS]
◼
►
a little odd himself because how how is
[TS]
◼
►
however he he's like the doctor he
[TS]
◼
►
started well yeah but he's like blonde
[TS]
◼
►
and has his hair is kinda long and he
[TS]
◼
►
wears ear rings and he complains about
[TS]
◼
►
not being beautiful and then his kid
[TS]
◼
►
then here is done is darker he's this
[TS]
◼
►
he's like he's like am a like David
[TS]
◼
►
Bowie hey its latest he's not quite
[TS]
◼
►
he's not quite male he's not quite
[TS]
◼
►
female and then your protagonist is
[TS]
◼
►
turned into an old lady
[TS]
◼
►
although that's fascinating because at
[TS]
◼
►
various points she's not an old lady
[TS]
◼
►
writer and watch closely when she's
[TS]
◼
►
sleeping she's not and sometimes when
[TS]
◼
►
she professes her emotion she's not and
[TS]
◼
►
sometimes she's got the gray hair but
[TS]
◼
►
but the young face and has the young
[TS]
◼
►
voice it's panic that goes back and
[TS]
◼
►
forth which is crazy
[TS]
◼
►
so you like which Sophia's yeah that was
[TS]
◼
►
a little bit on the on the nose but it's
[TS]
◼
►
like the interesting thing about this
[TS]
◼
►
that would never happen in western
[TS]
◼
►
studios that you don't have a senior
[TS]
◼
►
citizen as your main cut you if you have
[TS]
◼
►
a beautiful young girl she has to say
[TS]
◼
►
beautiful young girl the more you don't
[TS]
◼
►
have her have the movie running around
[TS]
◼
►
the old person's groan groan as being
[TS]
◼
►
yea big nose and all hunched over and
[TS]
◼
►
although although it is there some great
[TS]
◼
►
scenes in this right that are the way
[TS]
◼
►
she cleans up the
[TS]
◼
►
Castle because the cast is a mess and
[TS]
◼
►
the book there's a little and there's a
[TS]
◼
►
little boy who is a gas that she's
[TS]
◼
►
cleaning up the castle and of course the
[TS]
◼
►
fire demon is also a gas because he's
[TS]
◼
►
afraid he's going to go out that she's
[TS]
◼
►
sort of like cleaning up all the ash
[TS]
◼
►
that's around and then the old boy has
[TS]
◼
►
got his hood that he puts on that makes
[TS]
◼
►
them look like kind of a strange kind of
[TS]
◼
►
bearded little tiny still little guy but
[TS]
◼
►
now he looks like a bit a bearded older
[TS]
◼
►
little guy that's cool i love the door
[TS]
◼
►
that's got the little thing you turn and
[TS]
◼
►
it opens in four different places
[TS]
◼
►
because this this castle is is walking
[TS]
◼
►
around on legs which is also really
[TS]
◼
►
interesting and it's agglomeration got
[TS]
◼
►
like bits of house inside it but then
[TS]
◼
►
you flip the switch and now you're in a
[TS]
◼
►
small town and you can switch again and
[TS]
◼
►
you're in the capital city i mean
[TS]
◼
►
there's a lot of stuff in here that's
[TS]
◼
►
really really interesting but it does
[TS]
◼
►
seem like it's a lot of stuff patent
[TS]
◼
►
leather yeah yeah and so and this movie
[TS]
◼
►
like all these other movies and most
[TS]
◼
►
japanese animation movies they just want
[TS]
◼
►
you to take it at face value they don't
[TS]
◼
►
want to explain to you like yeah but
[TS]
◼
►
notice that you know it's always magic
[TS]
◼
►
that castle and walks there's don't like
[TS]
◼
►
so the second thing is you know that is
[TS]
◼
►
almost quintessential in this where i
[TS]
◼
►
have one of those moments where I just
[TS]
◼
►
kinda like drop my hands and like well
[TS]
◼
►
ok whatever is all of a sudden in rapid
[TS]
◼
►
succession there's oh that's his heart
[TS]
◼
►
the heart was in the with the with
[TS]
◼
►
Counsell for all along and that's his
[TS]
◼
►
curse and and look turnip head is a
[TS]
◼
►
prince from the foreign country that we
[TS]
◼
►
recently with starting oh of course sure
[TS]
◼
►
that all happened rather quickly and i'm
[TS]
◼
►
not quite sure why the connects with the
[TS]
◼
►
plot you're like well then you don't
[TS]
◼
►
even have a plot you just have a messy
[TS]
◼
►
or unpleasant things that aren't even
[TS]
◼
►
connected to the flat like the fact that
[TS]
◼
►
this fire a little boys can disguise
[TS]
◼
►
themselves or there's magic in this
[TS]
◼
►
world is a castle that walks or just
[TS]
◼
►
like all that stuff is like just just go
[TS]
◼
►
with it because it's not it's not
[TS]
◼
►
important to the plot is just like
[TS]
◼
►
they're just a side character you get
[TS]
◼
►
hung up by like the mechanics of the
[TS]
◼
►
fire demon or what you know why does
[TS]
◼
►
that dog look weird or the fact that big
[TS]
◼
►
fella colonia that the big fat which
[TS]
◼
►
woman like you is who is she oh she our
[TS]
◼
►
friend she like you just you just said
[TS]
◼
►
simplistic but you really need a solid
[TS]
◼
►
plan to hang out on and i think this one
[TS]
◼
►
they just didn't know where to go and
[TS]
◼
►
toward the end of the movie some of the
[TS]
◼
►
final lines that house speaks he's kind
[TS]
◼
►
of grunting and it is literally
[TS]
◼
►
christian bale in the introduction
[TS]
◼
►
it is literally Christian Bale doing his
[TS]
◼
►
batman voice before he was Batman it and
[TS]
◼
►
i turned my wife I said it's a bad man
[TS]
◼
►
how is batman because it is it's
[TS]
◼
►
christian bale most the movie you don't
[TS]
◼
►
really you don't really think it's
[TS]
◼
►
christian bale but then that he does
[TS]
◼
►
this little something like this now I'm
[TS]
◼
►
how I'm going off again and that's it
[TS]
◼
►
I don't want to tell you should not look
[TS]
◼
►
at the NDB page for Princess Mononoke if
[TS]
◼
►
you gotta open close it
[TS]
◼
►
alright because i don't want to distract
[TS]
◼
►
you with who is voicing stuff in that
[TS]
◼
►
movie because for the most part it does
[TS]
◼
►
not sound like them and right when it's
[TS]
◼
►
done up you know just look up who
[TS]
◼
►
everyone was like it's some stuff in
[TS]
◼
►
their stuff wacky stuff lauren bacall in
[TS]
◼
►
in the English dub track for
[TS]
◼
►
house-moving count yeah she was a surge
[TS]
◼
►
of it is and i really liked her as the
[TS]
◼
►
woman she was did a great job on that
[TS]
◼
►
yeah yeah so they get good people will
[TS]
◼
►
John Lasseter now now that pixar was
[TS]
◼
►
bought by disney John Lasseter is
[TS]
◼
►
basically in charge of doing faithful e
[TS]
◼
►
English releases of all of miyazaki's
[TS]
◼
►
movies and they and they do a good job
[TS]
◼
►
hey I mean you can argue about whether
[TS]
◼
►
that you know you prefer the original
[TS]
◼
►
with subtitles but the dubs are good
[TS]
◼
►
they're they're generally very good with
[TS]
◼
►
famous people who are good you know not
[TS]
◼
►
just like brad pitt will be in a blue
[TS]
◼
►
but actually good work
[TS]
◼
►
all right we should talk about ponyo
[TS]
◼
►
which is his most recent movie from 2008
[TS]
◼
►
which is like his take on the little
[TS]
◼
►
well it it's something alright princess
[TS]
◼
►
is similar one where where you're like
[TS]
◼
►
what is what you know very very rarely
[TS]
◼
►
does he spend any time establishing
[TS]
◼
►
whether this is reality or magic is real
[TS]
◼
►
everyone in all the movies accepts
[TS]
◼
►
anything that's in them like you know
[TS]
◼
►
fish with hair and humanize we don't
[TS]
◼
►
whatever giant sea like no one is known
[TS]
◼
►
is like oh my god there's a giant woman
[TS]
◼
►
underneath us in the ocean i thought it
[TS]
◼
►
if a giant woman appeared on anything in
[TS]
◼
►
the ocean you know time spent on is just
[TS]
◼
►
like it's all of a piece almost as if
[TS]
◼
►
everyone in all his movies is a child
[TS]
◼
►
because you know that childlike wonder
[TS]
◼
►
that he has he likes to imagine a world
[TS]
◼
►
in which anything is possible people
[TS]
◼
►
aren't fazed by it so if you could just
[TS]
◼
►
let that get out of the way this is this
[TS]
◼
►
is a movie about a little i don't need
[TS]
◼
►
to not even a mermaid a little fish girl
[TS]
◼
►
yeah it's not like she sings a song
[TS]
◼
►
about wanting to go on land she just is
[TS]
◼
►
glorious and independent and squirms
[TS]
◼
►
she's the she's the daughter of the
[TS]
◼
►
queen of the sea and a human who is a
[TS]
◼
►
what a waste of human who got fed up
[TS]
◼
►
with humans i don't particularly like
[TS]
◼
►
the actor that you know Liam Neeson this
[TS]
◼
►
he doesn't do a bad job but he just
[TS]
◼
►
sounds like Liam Neeson to me and i
[TS]
◼
►
think is wrong for the character very
[TS]
◼
►
so she so she yeah she takes off and
[TS]
◼
►
it's kinda put captured by a kid in a in
[TS]
◼
►
a green plastic bucket and that they
[TS]
◼
►
bond strangely and rapidly but to the
[TS]
◼
►
point where she decides she loves loves
[TS]
◼
►
the boy and doesn't want to leave him
[TS]
◼
►
and so she basically when she's returned
[TS]
◼
►
to the sea against your will she goes
[TS]
◼
►
into the room that's got all the magic
[TS]
◼
►
stuff in it and turns herself into a
[TS]
◼
►
human and and again if you hear the plot
[TS]
◼
►
of this movie described as well he does
[TS]
◼
►
have a plot like this you know character
[TS]
◼
►
they're separated there's a blood
[TS]
◼
►
adversary you know there's old people
[TS]
◼
►
are in JT of its like Coon at one point
[TS]
◼
►
actually with the old people are walking
[TS]
◼
►
again and they're under the sea and it
[TS]
◼
►
really is like wait a second where's you
[TS]
◼
►
know the cast of Cocoon yeah so so that
[TS]
◼
►
when everything floods and is this
[TS]
◼
►
pre-cambrian prehistoric fish Dino going
[TS]
◼
►
around under the seat because that's
[TS]
◼
►
what he'll I doubt was this thing is
[TS]
◼
►
going to restore the earth to its
[TS]
◼
►
previous state and people like you know
[TS]
◼
►
let's evacuate the old people from the
[TS]
◼
►
home and get the black don't like the
[TS]
◼
►
earth is flooded is Armageddon who are
[TS]
◼
►
all gonna die giant seat nope nope
[TS]
◼
►
everyone's comments can be LT so 13 of
[TS]
◼
►
the mom whose voice by tina fey and amy
[TS]
◼
►
English up is a they like she first off
[TS]
◼
►
she's like you know I could stay here
[TS]
◼
►
with the old people but instead i'm
[TS]
◼
►
it to my house and it's like tip this
[TS]
◼
►
terrible parenting better i'm gonna
[TS]
◼
►
don't don't go in the rushing water with
[TS]
◼
►
your little tiny car and she's like no
[TS]
◼
►
I'm gonna I'm gonna time it just right
[TS]
◼
►
and i'm going to jump over within my kid
[TS]
◼
►
in the car which she does and she drives
[TS]
◼
►
really fast and the water is about to
[TS]
◼
►
get them and they get to the highpoint
[TS]
◼
►
their houses like I'm a high point
[TS]
◼
►
they're completely surrounded by water
[TS]
◼
►
and and she's I'm gonna go back out when
[TS]
◼
►
how could you how could you even go back
[TS]
◼
►
out you're completely surround and yet
[TS]
◼
►
somehow she goes back out this is this
[TS]
◼
►
is another thing I think is gripping for
[TS]
◼
►
children miyazaki's movies involve
[TS]
◼
►
children is that all in all of them that
[TS]
◼
►
it's the opposite of helicopter
[TS]
◼
►
parenting if you think of the situations
[TS]
◼
►
that young children two three four five
[TS]
◼
►
year old children are put in by parents
[TS]
◼
►
in these movies they're like the kids
[TS]
◼
►
you know I like here you just got i'll
[TS]
◼
►
be in my sent folder i'll be my thing
[TS]
◼
►
doing my work for whatever you guys just
[TS]
◼
►
go run out in the woods and have fun and
[TS]
◼
►
this one it's like you know the kid just
[TS]
◼
►
goes to school comes back on his own
[TS]
◼
►
just let him play at one point she finds
[TS]
◼
►
him in the ocean drowning practically
[TS]
◼
►
you think she would say well from this
[TS]
◼
►
point on I'm not letting much i'm making
[TS]
◼
►
sure there's an adult supervise my child
[TS]
◼
►
since i live someplace surrounded by
[TS]
◼
►
ocean water and I almost he almost
[TS]
◼
►
drowned you know
[TS]
◼
►
no it's all just like laid back in the
[TS]
◼
►
kit and up and you know so kids who were
[TS]
◼
►
brought up in the current helicopter
[TS]
◼
►
parenting lifestyle and you know of what
[TS]
◼
►
was trying to keep our children safe
[TS]
◼
►
watch these movies they sit and they see
[TS]
◼
►
these kids in situations that they've
[TS]
◼
►
never been allowed to get into and it's
[TS]
◼
►
gripping busy like you know there's
[TS]
◼
►
nobody there to save him he's by himself
[TS]
◼
►
where there's no adult taking care of
[TS]
◼
►
him are telling him don't go there don't
[TS]
◼
►
do that all these kids are on their own
[TS]
◼
►
and they they do things he you know she
[TS]
◼
►
makes the boat get bigger he's tooling
[TS]
◼
►
around on the boat looking at things
[TS]
◼
►
like they're off on their own doing
[TS]
◼
►
their thing you know and when they get
[TS]
◼
►
back the parents don't really help them
[TS]
◼
►
i really like that that she makes the
[TS]
◼
►
little boat that's driven by a candle
[TS]
◼
►
she makes a boat in the candle big and
[TS]
◼
►
they like the candle and then they just
[TS]
◼
►
go hang out and people like hey how you
[TS]
◼
►
yeah we're just looking for my mom you
[TS]
◼
►
have you seen her and the baby is is
[TS]
◼
►
yeah weird stuff going to church and
[TS]
◼
►
their relationship starts off as boy and
[TS]
◼
►
yeah a-and evolved into what exactly
[TS]
◼
►
like you don't make this move west
[TS]
◼
►
you be like wait am I supposed to
[TS]
◼
►
believe these kids are in love is this
[TS]
◼
►
this is uncomfortable for me because
[TS]
◼
►
they shouldn't be romantic love between
[TS]
◼
►
children who were five been there isn't
[TS]
◼
►
but it's like but then what's the point
[TS]
◼
►
of this movie if there's a male and a
[TS]
◼
►
female and their leads they have to get
[TS]
◼
►
married at the end because i don't
[TS]
◼
►
understand the purpose of life it's not
[TS]
◼
►
for these people to get married and live
[TS]
◼
►
happily ever after and it seems like
[TS]
◼
►
they do but really it's not it's not
[TS]
◼
►
romantic love between these people is
[TS]
◼
►
just save I it's you know it's strange
[TS]
◼
►
if you get hung up on these things you
[TS]
◼
►
think are other Japanese all weird and
[TS]
◼
►
prefers never like knocking on canvas
[TS]
◼
►
you can't just accept at face value
[TS]
◼
►
because what happened they're not
[TS]
◼
►
kissing each other in this movie you
[TS]
◼
►
know they're just related the little
[TS]
◼
►
smoother but it's like it's it's the
[TS]
◼
►
love the little boy would feel for a
[TS]
◼
►
little girl right
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and and making human species his
[TS]
◼
►
best friend and he wants to keep her
[TS]
◼
►
around and she's cool
[TS]
◼
►
although this movie this movie and
[TS]
◼
►
strangely because they they they like
[TS]
◼
►
wander through the tunnel and she just
[TS]
◼
►
turns into a fish-like and that's one of
[TS]
◼
►
those moments again like oh I guess now
[TS]
◼
►
she turns into a fish again
[TS]
◼
►
yeah well yeah okay let's stop there
[TS]
◼
►
like the way she and she strange-looking
[TS]
◼
►
when she's efficient ugly and weird and
[TS]
◼
►
yes this movie isn't is more absurdist
[TS]
◼
►
with the old people start to walk and
[TS]
◼
►
it's fair it's yeah wow this gets caught
[TS]
◼
►
up and its plot a little bit too much
[TS]
◼
►
too because if the whole messages I go
[TS]
◼
►
that's not pleased to see this is
[TS]
◼
►
wonderful nature is good and all that
[TS]
◼
►
business but it was very interesting
[TS]
◼
►
imagery and lots of good scenes but
[TS]
◼
►
overall it's kind of a kind of a mess it
[TS]
◼
►
doesn't have the heart of totoro doesn't
[TS]
◼
►
have the sophistication of kiki it has a
[TS]
◼
►
lot of the absurdity of spirited away
[TS]
◼
►
but without the same relatable our trip
[TS]
◼
►
for the protagonist so it's mostly just
[TS]
◼
►
kind of like a visual delight a combined
[TS]
◼
►
with a plot that will be off-putting to
[TS]
◼
►
a lot of people but if it doesn't bother
[TS]
◼
►
your disciple there is you know one of
[TS]
◼
►
my favorite things in this movie is when
[TS]
◼
►
the the father calls to say that he's
[TS]
◼
►
got another trip on his ship and he's
[TS]
◼
►
not going to be coming home for shore
[TS]
◼
►
leave and and the mother is furious now
[TS]
◼
►
and then the father is going past
[TS]
◼
►
and they're they're signaling via
[TS]
◼
►
flashing light violent Morse code and
[TS]
◼
►
that and that the Sun is very you know
[TS]
◼
►
he's very enthusiastic and it's relaying
[TS]
◼
►
messages back and forth and and the mom
[TS]
◼
►
is just saying you basically tell him to
[TS]
◼
►
tell him to beat it
[TS]
◼
►
tell me is a jerk it's the one and the
[TS]
◼
►
boys like no no I'm gonna be mom was
[TS]
◼
►
kind of mad at you
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that's that's something else you
[TS]
◼
►
enjoy see in kids movies because sites
[TS]
◼
►
that you had a kids movie where there
[TS]
◼
►
was a mother taking care of the Son and
[TS]
◼
►
the father was away and he couldn't come
[TS]
◼
►
back the mother would be like oh dear
[TS]
◼
►
how I wish you would come back but
[TS]
◼
►
adults are actual people to get you
[TS]
◼
►
don't have e and a kids movie usually
[TS]
◼
►
don't show the adults have you know you
[TS]
◼
►
don't show the parents fighting unless
[TS]
◼
►
they're bad parent so you don't so the
[TS]
◼
►
you know like she gets upset like
[TS]
◼
►
because your husband she gets mad at him
[TS]
◼
►
because I call how you're supposed to be
[TS]
◼
►
and it's mad because she loves him and
[TS]
◼
►
wants him back but also mad because like
[TS]
◼
►
why you would work and kids movies you
[TS]
◼
►
almost never show that everyone in
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki movies gets to be who they are
[TS]
◼
►
no one has to be like oh this is x type
[TS]
◼
►
of movie they're for adults can't have
[TS]
◼
►
that kind of reaction because real
[TS]
◼
►
adults do have that reaction real
[TS]
◼
►
relationships and they have them in
[TS]
◼
►
front of children and it doesn't make
[TS]
◼
►
them bad people you know and he shows
[TS]
◼
►
that in his movies everyone gets to be a
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and then the Sun place will you get
[TS]
◼
►
the sense what he what he's done before
[TS]
◼
►
which is a play maybe not necessarily
[TS]
◼
►
even peacemaker but he's aware of that
[TS]
◼
►
me he's not gonna let his mom being
[TS]
◼
►
angry get in the way of him talking to
[TS]
◼
►
his dad so and his dad knows that he can
[TS]
◼
►
use his son a little bit as a bridge
[TS]
◼
►
there are different you know put in a
[TS]
◼
►
good word for me I know she's bad at me
[TS]
◼
►
and it's it's sweet its it's nice and
[TS]
◼
►
then you know they're giant waves in the
[TS]
◼
►
mood comes down and pulls a giant wall
[TS]
◼
►
of water with all the boats and its
[TS]
◼
►
members coming at that part I never
[TS]
◼
►
really understood either it's like the
[TS]
◼
►
moon is getting closer
[TS]
◼
►
yeah but things are out of balance yeah
[TS]
◼
►
at the giant tidal wave sweeps up all
[TS]
◼
►
the cargo ships into here and there's a
[TS]
◼
►
lot of stuff this and click the ship
[TS]
◼
►
parking lot of I don't know
[TS]
◼
►
well that's that's that's our are
[TS]
◼
►
chronological walk through the canon of
[TS]
◼
►
the ones that you've seen anyone mostly
[TS]
◼
►
and well and we covered the ones that
[TS]
◼
►
that I haven't seen by by mentioning
[TS]
◼
►
yeah I i almost wish we could have done
[TS]
◼
►
not had this not being miyazaki show but
[TS]
◼
►
a studio ghibli job is there are other
[TS]
◼
►
movies like for example the most recent
[TS]
◼
►
I don't know if you've seen it but uh
[TS]
◼
►
Arrietty already i had the wishes the
[TS]
◼
►
borrower's i have not i want to see it
[TS]
◼
►
but I haven't seen it and try to get
[TS]
◼
►
that would fit right in with the
[TS]
◼
►
discussion even though it's not a
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki did not track this and a couple
[TS]
◼
►
other minor things like whisper of the
[TS]
◼
►
heart and was the one I was thinking of
[TS]
◼
►
other works that are involved in the
[TS]
◼
►
studio but not necessarily involving him
[TS]
◼
►
that are it fit right into this genre
[TS]
◼
►
and and give a slightly different flavor
[TS]
◼
►
that will have to say the production and
[TS]
◼
►
I still actually really want to an
[TS]
◼
►
animation but considering how far it was
[TS]
◼
►
to get a show together for like The
[TS]
◼
►
Godfather of great japanese animation i
[TS]
◼
►
really doubt we're going to be able to
[TS]
◼
►
get a show together for people who have
[TS]
◼
►
seen anime in general well kind of anime
[TS]
◼
►
you know I think we're gonna have to
[TS]
◼
►
treat that like we did like we did games
[TS]
◼
►
or or or text adventures or things like
[TS]
◼
►
that where where we might have to go
[TS]
◼
►
outside the usual panelists in order to
[TS]
◼
►
get a good collection of people for that
[TS]
◼
►
I'd be out there I'm there's more it's
[TS]
◼
►
uh-huh I don't know free free agents or
[TS]
◼
►
I don't know what the sportster would be
[TS]
◼
►
I was thinking guests get into pinch
[TS]
◼
►
hitters hitters you have something like
[TS]
◼
►
that temporary injury relief something
[TS]
◼
►
like that but uh because I really beyond
[TS]
◼
►
miyazaki all I could talk about Star
[TS]
◼
►
Blazers I I could sing with the Star
[TS]
◼
►
Blazers theme song even but i'm sure the
[TS]
◼
►
Star Blazers is also a butchered version
[TS]
◼
►
of yes yes I yeah that's the thing with
[TS]
◼
►
animes I can't give you homework and say
[TS]
◼
►
okay we'll just watch the these last
[TS]
◼
►
decades worth yeah am i right you know
[TS]
◼
►
at least there's like one director a
[TS]
◼
►
series of movies you can watch for them
[TS]
◼
►
to get a takeout but if you haven't been
[TS]
◼
►
spending your life it's like a volunteer
[TS]
◼
►
and a comic book thing like okay start
[TS]
◼
►
reading comic books and get better than
[TS]
◼
►
yeah exactly that's it's tough to catch
[TS]
◼
►
up yeah it was hard enough for me to
[TS]
◼
►
catch up on music and music is really
[TS]
◼
►
kiki kiki is my favorite with totoro
[TS]
◼
►
close behind but Kiki something about it
[TS]
◼
►
maybe it's all the airship
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and for adults listen to the story
[TS]
◼
►
that sounds like everything we just
[TS]
◼
►
described her kids movies and stuff
[TS]
◼
►
one day without your children might
[TS]
◼
►
maybe when you're by yourself like a
[TS]
◼
►
rainy day or something get Kiki stick it
[TS]
◼
►
somewhere off to the side so when that
[TS]
◼
►
rainy day comes you going to sit at the
[TS]
◼
►
couch chill out try to roll your mind
[TS]
◼
►
back a few decades and just watch that
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and Syria doesn't see it doesn't
[TS]
◼
►
connect with you a rainy windy day gonna
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that my heart yeah because that
[TS]
◼
►
wind who is the bad guy
[TS]
◼
►
the enemy alright John I thought this
[TS]
◼
►
was AI thought there's a lot of fun
[TS]
◼
►
yes it was nice to watch those movies
[TS]
◼
►
again to like giving you homework too
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that was good that was good at home
[TS]
◼
►
some other genres yes make you watch
[TS]
◼
►
please do they did they do this with a
[TS]
◼
►
book club they make me read things
[TS]
◼
►
against my will so what you can make me
[TS]
◼
►
watch things thats fine damn right we
[TS]
◼
►
can do this again
[TS]
◼
►
alright well then i will close up this
[TS]
◼
►
episode of the incomparable and i would
[TS]
◼
►
like to thank John siracusa for spending
[TS]
◼
►
the time and his knowledge of anime
[TS]
◼
►
which I do not have but again what a
[TS]
◼
►
great director and a lot of great a lot
[TS]
◼
►
of great movies especially totoro and
[TS]
◼
►
Kiki so until our next edition of the
[TS]
◼
►
incomparable podcast thanks again to
[TS]
◼
►
john i'm jason Snell we'll see you next
[TS]
◼
►
la that are ya short compared to like
[TS]
◼
►
this seriously i could actually do a
[TS]
◼
►
scene-by-scene three-hour thing on any
[TS]
◼
►
of these moves hi
[TS]
◼
►
well I know that wants that that was the
[TS]
◼
►
other way to go is that I feel like yeah
[TS]
◼
►
like i said i think i could do an hour
[TS]
◼
►
on chest totoro and Kiki and in fact I
[TS]
◼
►
could do an hour on each of them
[TS]
◼
►
yeah i wish i could that could do have
[TS]
◼
►
done a better job of convincing people
[TS]
◼
►
to these movies might be something to be
[TS]
◼
►
interested because if you're listening
[TS]
◼
►
to the show you like the nerdy
[TS]
◼
►
conversations that we normally have
[TS]
◼
►
it's hard for me to to explain why i
[TS]
◼
►
like these movies and why I think other
[TS]
◼
►
people will but i think this whole
[TS]
◼
►
swathes of the population the nerd
[TS]
◼
►
population who just avoid these entirely
[TS]
◼
►
you know I mean that's why i said that i
[TS]
◼
►
find them the especially those two
[TS]
◼
►
charming it's just like you i can't help
[TS]
◼
►
but smile while I'm watching them
[TS]
◼
►
they're nice they're pretty they're
[TS]
◼
►
sweet they're you know it there's
[TS]
◼
►
nothing wrong with that it and
[TS]
◼
►
warehousing and done
[TS]
◼
►
interesting you know right but and the
[TS]
◼
►
and the plot is beside the point in the
[TS]
◼
►
fact that there is no conflict I i mean
[TS]
◼
►
i didn't mention this either but you
[TS]
◼
►
know with young kids I think I think
[TS]
◼
►
totoro and Kiki are go to movies for
[TS]
◼
►
young kids because they are there are
[TS]
◼
►
some kids that are they really get
[TS]
◼
►
disturbed by scary parts and conflict
[TS]
◼
►
and there's no conflict at Otero has a
[TS]
◼
►
little like I my children being a little
[TS]
◼
►
bit scared when they first meet or he
[TS]
◼
►
makes that very deep noise alright yeah
[TS]
◼
►
he's totally not scared with that
[TS]
◼
►
combines Bucky just there's nothing
[TS]
◼
►
that's gonna tell your kids that mean
[TS]
◼
►
yeah and and the best thing about Kiki
[TS]
◼
►
the reason I i love it so much because I
[TS]
◼
►
i feel like i'm putting what I'm putting
[TS]
◼
►
in front of them is like the highest
[TS]
◼
►
quality things made by humans but they
[TS]
◼
►
can still enjoy it i'm not putting them
[TS]
◼
►
in front of crap i'm putting in front of
[TS]
◼
►
something that they can keep watching
[TS]
◼
►
for the entire life in already which I
[TS]
◼
►
encourage you to watch my kids have seen
[TS]
◼
►
about as soon as it came out in japan i
[TS]
◼
►
grabbed it and I watched myself and i
[TS]
◼
►
watched it with my kids and I read the
[TS]
◼
►
subtitles and kids you know their their
[TS]
◼
►
little minds are amazing i read the
[TS]
◼
►
subtitles like once or twice and they
[TS]
◼
►
both memorize the movie and so they
[TS]
◼
►
watch Arrietty all the time
[TS]
◼
►
with no subtitles on ninja in japanese
[TS]
◼
►
is also not a lot of dialogue you'll see
[TS]
◼
►
that it's you know it's it's a different
[TS]
◼
►
flavor than miyazaki's movies but that
[TS]
◼
►
that charm and beauty and interest and
[TS]
◼
►
like gentleness is all there and they
[TS]
◼
►
they love it they they sit there and
[TS]
◼
►
watch this movie in Japanese it
[TS]
◼
►
I never even thought to try to trick
[TS]
◼
►
show them doubles for the movies but you
[TS]
◼
►
know I can't wait for the Englishman to
[TS]
◼
►
come out now I'm actually kind of scared
[TS]
◼
►
to see it because the whole family has
[TS]
◼
►
seen this movie 50 times now in Japanese
[TS]
◼
►
and it'll be weird to hear the American
[TS]
◼
►
Voices you know I read the borrower's
[TS]
◼
►
when I was a kid and we were we were
[TS]
◼
►
actually yeah we're gonna go see it and
[TS]
◼
►
we we didn't it was it was sold out when
[TS]
◼
►
we went to see it down in Southern
[TS]
◼
►
did they ever explain in the source
[TS]
◼
►
material why the call borrowers when
[TS]
◼
►
they don't give anything back
[TS]
◼
►
now this is a major plot point but it
[TS]
◼
►
just hit it does bother me i well I'm
[TS]
◼
►
trying to remember i think i think the
[TS]
◼
►
idea was that the borrower's could could
[TS]
◼
►
give them back or it may have been the
[TS]
◼
►
borrower's just like a turnout copyright
[TS]
◼
►
well I i think it was i think it was a
[TS]
◼
►
little bit like um no no we're not
[TS]
◼
►
we're just borrowing it that it was
[TS]
◼
►
almost like an understanding that that
[TS]
◼
►
they were just putting a nice positive
[TS]
◼
►
spin on the fact that they stole your
[TS]
◼
►
pencils and use them as bedposts or
[TS]
◼
►
whatever they did with them and the
[TS]
◼
►
other one I recommend view is a whisper
[TS]
◼
►
of how old is your daughter
[TS]
◼
►
ten maybe too old for this week you
[TS]
◼
►
can't whisper of the heart is
[TS]
◼
►
I don't know what you call it's more
[TS]
◼
►
stereotypical girls movie but it still
[TS]
◼
►
is kind of a self-actualization thing I
[TS]
◼
►
it also is kind of long and has a silly
[TS]
◼
►
ending but it's that give it a try
[TS]
◼
►
alright i I've looked it up here i will
[TS]
◼
►
i'll check it out and my daughter loves
[TS]
◼
►
the Cat Returns which is much more silly
[TS]
◼
►
and kind of cats and it has a connection
[TS]
◼
►
with whisper of the heart lot of these
[TS]
◼
►
movies are connected in strange ways i
[TS]
◼
►
would not recommend the cat returns and
[TS]
◼
►
if unless you have a four-year-old
[TS]
◼
►
daughter who likes cats I i have no I
[TS]
◼
►
have a ten-year-old daughter a
[TS]
◼
►
four-year-old daughter who likes cats
[TS]
◼
►
yeah you're a little bit past my
[TS]
◼
►
programming my japanese animation
[TS]
◼
►
inspired programming and
[TS]
◼
►
by the way I should mention the show I
[TS]
◼
►
could not keep my daughter away from
[TS]
◼
►
disney movies she flying I my wife loves
[TS]
◼
►
them and I couldn't possible I could get
[TS]
◼
►
my daughter away from them anyway we
[TS]
◼
►
didn't dress her in pink or anything
[TS]
◼
►
like that and then all of a sudden she
[TS]
◼
►
just went into a princess phase and you
[TS]
◼
►
couldn't really couldn't stop it and she
[TS]
◼
►
got she got through it but you know and
[TS]
◼
►
and so we had we tried to give it which
[TS]
◼
►
was trying to show the good ones
[TS]
◼
►
so we we we had the boy we watched
[TS]
◼
►
Sleeping Beauty way too many times a lot
[TS]
◼
►
of the lip-sync seen them all and like I
[TS]
◼
►
just I just prayed like my massive
[TS]
◼
►
foundation of Studio Ghibli movies right
[TS]
◼
►
I just laid the bedrock there so that
[TS]
◼
►
the princess phase it will come and it
[TS]
◼
►
will go but underneath it all will be
[TS]
◼
►
key right and Nas ago you know
[TS]
◼
►
yeah Nicki saving that boy the end of
[TS]
◼
►
the movie you know it's tough
[TS]
◼
►
yeah yeah yeah i mean the Disney stuff
[TS]
◼
►
is is fine but it doesn't really send
[TS]
◼
►
the right message now it doesn't it has
[TS]
◼
►
music they like but yeah yeah those
[TS]
◼
►
movies bother me immensely
[TS]
◼
►
yeah yeah sleeping beauty's not that bad
[TS]
◼
►
some of them are really bad some of them
[TS]
◼
►
are really really bad but uh but now we
[TS]
◼
►
I think we've exposed her to a lot of a
[TS]
◼
►
lot of good stuff plus she's I mean plus
[TS]
◼
►
you like know stuff about Doctor Who so
[TS]
◼
►
yeah that's good
[TS]
◼
►
I've totally ruined her for her for four
[TS]
◼
►
boys dick all right actually I maybe
[TS]
◼
►
she's perfect cause they'll be like how
[TS]
◼
►
you doing better actor who well I you
[TS]
◼
►
know I don't know I don't know what's
[TS]
◼
►
gonna happen but i have given her I've
[TS]
◼
►
given her a nice little layer of of
[TS]
◼
►
depth that she can either take advantage
[TS]
◼
►
of or completely deny but she you know I
[TS]
◼
►
don't know I've done all I can so far
[TS]
◼
►
yeah sometimes i feel like i'm a i-i-i
[TS]
◼
►
question what I'm doing this like I said
[TS]
◼
►
my kids have been watching princess
[TS]
◼
►
mononoke my daughter is four and she
[TS]
◼
►
repeatedly request princess mononoke
[TS]
◼
►
after you watch that movie if you ask me
[TS]
◼
►
is appropriate to show to a
[TS]
◼
►
four-year-old maybe it's not maybe it's
[TS]
◼
►
not appropriate to show 24 year old but
[TS]
◼
►
she's a tough cookie sheet that we
[TS]
◼
►
watched that's why we watched naga no no
[TS]
◼
►
one of my watch today Oh house moving
[TS]
◼
►
castle today is is because i looked at
[TS]
◼
►
the ratings for both of them look like
[TS]
◼
►
Howl's Moving Castle was considered less
[TS]
◼
►
yeah then and then the other one and
[TS]
◼
►
kinda my son my son is still there were
[TS]
◼
►
parts of even howls moving castle that
[TS]
◼
►
he was like I don't want to watch this
[TS]
◼
►
part of my son at seven and my daughter
[TS]
◼
►
for about the same level of times if
[TS]
◼
►
it's scary saying he's searching stuff
[TS]
◼
►
yes she is a top and butt but like I'm
[TS]
◼
►
thinking like well why do you like this
[TS]
◼
►
because it is totally not a girl in a
[TS]
◼
►
boy's adventure movies dismemberment I
[TS]
◼
►
mean the cut you watch it and think
[TS]
◼
►
about my father watching but she loves
[TS]
◼
►
it i mean there's something about it
[TS]
◼
►
that just I don't know it's connecting
[TS]
◼
►
with their little in you know it's
[TS]
◼
►
reaching to the little brains and doing
[TS]
◼
►
something and so I'm hoping I'm not
[TS]
◼
►
scaring her life but I think I think she
[TS]
◼
►
I think she can handle it
[TS]
◼
►
I think I feel like that she's I feel
[TS]
◼
►
comfortable everything are you doing her
[TS]
◼
►
you know your kids react to stuff
[TS]
◼
►
differently a friend of mine her son
[TS]
◼
►
he's aight i think now and he couldn't
[TS]
◼
►
watch he may still not be able to watch
[TS]
◼
►
fiction he could watch fiction things
[TS]
◼
►
hehe could watch like documentaries like
[TS]
◼
►
shows about this is how you know these
[TS]
◼
►
are these are trucks that are building a
[TS]
◼
►
he loved stuff like that but you know
[TS]
◼
►
and he got really into like Star Wars
[TS]
◼
►
related like books and pictures and
[TS]
◼
►
things but had never seen Star Wars
[TS]
◼
►
because he was he was like I think and I
[TS]
◼
►
think it was the conflict thing I think
[TS]
◼
►
like having a bit bad people doing mean
[TS]
◼
►
things really freaked him out night I
[TS]
◼
►
told her that she should show him Kiki
[TS]
◼
►
because there is no conflict in this
[TS]
◼
►
nothing no mean people are in this movie
[TS]
◼
►
for the one mean witch who tells her to
[TS]
◼
►
how you can even fly haha
[TS]
◼
►
and then she leaves and that's it she's
[TS]
◼
►
just kind of stuck up
[TS]
◼
►
yeah yeah and that that's an example of
[TS]
◼
►
I'm I tell fortunes about now you're not
[TS]
◼
►
a good actor that kid is not going to
[TS]
◼
►
know did you see that cat is a whole
[TS]
◼
►
freakin movie memorized
[TS]
◼
►
yeah I've seen that 1a lot of times i
[TS]
◼
►
should get what you mentioned you there
[TS]
◼
►
the the witch in the woods and like you
[TS]
◼
►
mean janeane garofalo
[TS]
◼
►
yeah yeah yeah that's yeah what's up its
[TS]
◼
►
time but she did a good job she did sure
[TS]
◼
►
and doesn't it's not drawn like her so
[TS]
◼
►
it's not the worst when that's not Dario
[TS]
◼
►
American celebrity and it's drawn like
[TS]
◼
►
the right character as they want to do
[TS]
◼
►
disney think that was yeah or the
[TS]
◼
►
worst all right there was this great
[TS]
◼
►
thank you for staying up to end up and
[TS]
◼
►
making sure that there's a show this
[TS]
