  is see if we can pick something that's [TS]

  local comic shop every week that's okay [TS]

  you can run out and get a get the trade [TS]

  paperback and read it and it's just like [TS]

  a book club except it's got pictures you [TS]

  see that's the difference they make a [TS]

  comic book and our selection for this [TS]

  edition of comic book club is called [TS]

  lock and key and joining me to talk [TS]

  about locking key which is a series but [TS]

  it's not an open-ended series 2 [TS]

  closed-ended series and we're going to [TS]

  talk primarily about the first volume [TS]

  and then we'll progress from there a [TS]

  little bit fire off the spoiler horn [TS]

  when necessary [TS]

  comics podcast you like the wolverine of [TS]

  anyway locking key is by joe hill and [TS]

  gabriel rodriguez and joe hill if you're [TS]

  not aware i keep saying this and and I [TS]

  he probably would roll his eyes at this [TS]

  is he stephen king's kid if you haven't [TS]

  heard of Stephen King what's wrong with [TS]

  you but I think he's a really good [TS]

  writer [TS]

  I'll say that out front but i have to [TS]

  say i think i think it's sort of [TS]

  relevant that he stephen king's kid only [TS]

  because his his writing is familiar it [TS]

  reminds me of Stephen King in some ways [TS]

  in and and this is definitely a horror [TS]

  edged comic in some ways and also it's [TS]

  set in in New England but proving that [TS]

  he is independent of his father it is [TS]

  largely set in the the town of Lovecraft [TS]

  mass [TS]

  the chusetts not name a few hundred [TS]

  miles to the south of castle rock maze [TS]

  huh that's right it's not made so it's [TS]

  very different from his fault yeah i was [TS]

  thinking about the similarities between [TS]

  stephen king's work in Joe Hill's and I [TS]

  was also thinking it takes a heck of a [TS]

  lot of nerve to be a child of Stephen [TS]

  King's and to go into basically the same [TS]

  line of work in mind the same genre is [TS]

  too especially when one of your parents [TS]

  is is the 20th century's answer to [TS]

  Charles Dickens you know until you [TS]

  mentioned that I had no idea Joe Hill [TS]

  was stephen king's kid you didn't know [TS]

  oh no III didn't know which just shows [TS]

  you how much Stephen King I've read [TS]

  about this podcast get out this as best [TS]

  you can [TS]

  it's a it's a good perspective because [TS]

  now that you mention that it makes sense [TS]

  and i can recognize some certain things [TS]

  in there there's a vibe there right [TS]

  there the fact there's a tone so i read [TS]

  i read actually 11 we're going to talk [TS]

  about maybe a little bit later but I [TS]

  read volume for of locking key first [TS]

  which is completely normal [TS]

  mostly because it was nominated for Hugo [TS]

  warden and as a hugo voter i got the [TS]

  packet with all the nominees including [TS]

  walking key and I just thought it was [TS]

  one of those I didn't realize it was so [TS]

  self-contained that it really was a [TS]

  story to be read from beginning to end [TS]

  but i had no idea who Joe Hill was when [TS]

  i read it and i was impressed enough at [TS]

  that point to say wow that was really [TS]

  good i don't understand half of what I [TS]

  read and I need to go back to the [TS]

  beginning and start with vol.1 welcome [TS]

  to Lovecraft available at your local [TS]

  local comics store from ID'd idw [TS]

  publishing and I've got my copy read my [TS]

  hot little hands here a paper copy of it [TS]

  I don't know where to begin this is the [TS]

  first volume is really interesting [TS]

  because over over the future volumes are [TS]

  set in this town but only one is is [TS]

  about setting a mood and introducing us [TS]

  to these characters and I was trying to [TS]

  explain in two sentences what this story [TS]

  is to my wife and the best I could I [TS]

  could kind of come up with is it's about [TS]

  these kids who are in California and [TS]

  their father is murdered and they have [TS]

  to move back to to this town in New [TS]

  England not mean and the murderer comes [TS]

  to get them because that's basically the [TS]

  story of the [TS]

  of welcome to Lovecraft I mean it at all [TS]

  and there's no their magic keys by the [TS]

  way [TS]

  well I thought that one of the the most [TS]

  chilling aspects of welcome to Lovecraft [TS]

  in a book that is just chock-full them [TS]

  is the realization that this brutal [TS]

  murder isn't even really the point of [TS]

  the story it's just an event meant to [TS]

  set the whole story in motion and that [TS]

  it only gets more horrific by the end [TS]

  when you realize that there is some [TS]

  malign force that's moving all of these [TS]

  people into place like so many bubbles [TS]

  chess pieces that's that set the murder [TS]

  itself is plenty horrific and if I close [TS]

  my eyes I can still see the comic-book [TS]

  panel where the daughter kenzie is [TS]

  holding boat is holding your hand over [TS]

  bodis mouth and and cowering something [TS]

  the axe murderer can't find them [TS]

  just just the way that panel is shot and [TS]

  composed and Incas is haunting it's [TS]

  incredible art and it's horrifying to [TS]

  look at the same time it's so effective [TS]

  and it you're right in one way it's not [TS]

  really representative of where the [TS]

  series is going but it's so evocative [TS]

  from the get-go because it's it's the [TS]

  thing that it sets the whole story in [TS]

  motion but it's not you know this this [TS]

  isn't a meditation on the impact of that [TS]

  act of violence on these children I mean [TS]

  it is sort of that but it's really about [TS]

  putting these kids on a trajectory and [TS]

  it almost reminded me of like a like a [TS]

  Narnia kind of dark dark Narnia kind of [TS]

  thing where there's magic and the kids [TS]

  to get to that to get to this house [TS]

  where where this magical you know [TS]

  magical keys where they're located [TS]

  there's this terrible tragedy like it's [TS]

  the blips in the case of narnia and here [TS]

  it's it's a murder right well one of my [TS]

  favorite books as a kid was james and [TS]

  the giant peach which it all begins with [TS]

  James's parents being horribly [TS]

  grotesquely killed in a animal attack [TS]

  escaped what is it like a rhinoceros or [TS]

  something escapes from thanks for a [TS]

  lovely disney movie right right well [TS]

  yeah about me but starts out really dark [TS]

  right one and then it kinda and he goes [TS]

  to his awful answer gets darker but they [TS]

  reminded me that a little bit too or [TS]

  there's this horrible moment that kicks [TS]

  off the [TS]

  a series of unfortunate events right [TS]

  yeah it'sit's by the way the panel i'm [TS]

  talking about is on page 45 for anybody [TS]

  who's playing along at home has the [TS]

  trade paperback and you see repeated [TS]

  again on page 61 in a lot more detail [TS]

  much much more recently so it's [TS]

  definitely this is one of the things [TS]

  about the series they do a great job of [TS]

  repeating visual motifs over and over [TS]

  again on without beating you over the [TS]

  head with it which I really appreciate [TS]

  it well I think the storytelling in [TS]

  particular though the first chapter or [TS]

  the first issue if you were doing it in [TS]

  the floppy way the way it opens up with [TS]

  just the the welcome mat in the door and [TS]

  then the the two murderers at the door [TS]

  with their you you see their weapons [TS]

  sort of hidden here and this is just on [TS]

  the the second page of the thing is [TS]

  already you know no good is going to [TS]

  happen but start setting this tone of of [TS]

  hidden motives hidden objects the bodies [TS]

  in the back of the truck really got me [TS]

  too [TS]

  there's a runaway refers shot where you [TS]

  see that did that although they're being [TS]

  you know sort of like posing as as [TS]

  reasonable people there are dead bodies [TS]

  in the in the back of the pickup she [TS]

  says I like your pickup it's from my [TS]

  uncle he doesn't mind in India it's [TS]

  readily apparent why and it's just that [TS]

  well it one of the themes that seems to [TS]

  be embroidered over the series is that [TS]

  that you don't know will kill you and [TS]

  they lay that out in the first nine [TS]

  pages of the above excuse me to the [TS]

  first three pages of the book so Joe [TS]

  hell does not mess around [TS]

  now I'm know I was thinking about this [TS]

  and like i said i think i think stephen [TS]

  king is basically the 20th century [TS]

  answer to charles dickens and that he's [TS]

  written a lot of fiction and actually [TS]

  created a lot of fictional troops that [TS]

  have become part of pop culture people [TS]

  always talk about problems and pig's [TS]

  blood the same way and the shining can [TS]

  certainly entered people's you know [TS]

  lexicons even if some of that can be [TS]

  attributed Stanley Kubrick and I thought [TS]

  about how challenging it has to be if [TS]

  you are a writer and you're trying to to [TS]

  pull together this whole narrative [TS]

  universe and you're like alright the [TS]

  stuff that I'm sorting through my head [TS]

  my imagination how much of that is [TS]

  coming from and how much of that is [TS]

  stuff that my dad was gassing [TS]

  about the dinner table vinegar sink oh [TS]

  you know how was your day uh wasn't that [TS]

  I i wrote a scene about a bunch of [TS]

  people living under a dome today [TS]

  oh you know how do you how do you find [TS]

  your own original voice in that and i [TS]

  would love to know how Joe Hill is done [TS]

  it because there's a lot of King [TS]

  influences for example i think a lot of [TS]

  naming a lot of the names he comes up [TS]

  with his characters have a very Stephen [TS]

  King feel to them because King has a [TS]

  gift for giving his characters very [TS]

  vivid and illustrative name's not that [TS]

  that's continued here but at the same [TS]

  time we don't you don't feel like he's [TS]

  doing he's not doing an impression of [TS]

  his father if I didn't know that he was [TS]

  stephen king's kid I would say that [TS]

  somebody was influenced by stephen king [TS]

  right clearly yeah but he's not a [TS]

  sentimental like he's always been a [TS]

  really broad street of sentiment running [TS]

  through Kings work almost mawkish this [TS]

  and places and this book is a little i [TS]

  wouldn't say nasty cuz that like I tend [TS]

  to think of your game is being kind of [TS]

  having a nice broad stroke of nastiness [TS]

  to his comic book writing but he'll [TS]

  seems to be a lot more clear-eyed a lot [TS]

  less sentimental about people's emotions [TS]

  and motives and the damage they do to [TS]

  other people and i find it refreshing [TS]

  yeah I think that kind of brewed brutal [TS]

  honesty about the characters motivations [TS]

  without the need to go back to the that [TS]

  kingfish sentimentality for [TS]

  sentimentality sake was one of the [TS]

  things that I found most arresting about [TS]

  it on on my first read-through of the [TS]

  first chair of the first volume of it [TS]

  welcome to Lovecraft and it's one that i [TS]

  reread even though i had the other for [TS]

  sitting right there and I was ready to [TS]

  plow right through them [TS]

  I had to become come to grips that with [TS]

  the fact that it was going to be just [TS]

  this uncompromising and that's that's [TS]

  what really hooked me in immediately men [TS]

  and made it so compelling for me I mean [TS]

  where they're dealing with issues of the [TS]

  other mothers substance abuse and [TS]

  post-traumatic stress disorder that that [TS]

  has resulted from this thing in the way [TS]

  that the kids are coping in different [TS]

  ways how the daughters trying to figure [TS]

  out not just who she is as a human being [TS]

  but as an adolescent girl wanting to you [TS]

  know start relationships with [TS]

  with with with girls as well as with the [TS]

  guys romantically and trying to navigate [TS]

  that on top of being the epicenter of [TS]

  all of this really terrible stuff and [TS]

  then the little kid trying to be a [TS]

  little kid and then the eldest brother [TS]

  trying to find his place in the whole [TS]

  thing and there isn't this there isn't [TS]

  this periodic kumbaya moment where [TS]

  everybody is [TS]

  yeah you know just holding hands and and [TS]

  sharing wore glasses of milk and graham [TS]

  crackers just doesn't happen [TS]

  yeah because you meet Zach at the end [TS]

  and you're like oh crap oh no so so that [TS]

  I mean that I think you're right there's [TS]

  so much here that because you eat there [TS]

  is this whole layer of it would plot [TS]

  alone right [TS]

  the kids parent their kid's father is [TS]

  killed they they basically flee to the [TS]

  other side of the country to the to the [TS]

  town where he grew up [TS]

  the mother is a wreck that would be that [TS]

  would be enough but the fact is that the [TS]

  killer escapes is basically killing his [TS]

  way across the country to get to them [TS]

  meanwhile they're trying to adapt to [TS]

  their new town so you've got all of the [TS]

  interpersonal dynamics of being a kid in [TS]

  a new town trying to trying to a plus [TS]

  its where their father grew up so there [TS]

  are some land mines about the families [TS]

  there too and then oh yes the killer who [TS]

  is being supervised by a supernatural [TS]

  forest is going to come to the house [TS]

  named and finish the job and also [TS]

  there's a voice in the bottom of the [TS]

  well saying bring me things right and [TS]

  the back in theirs right introduced at [TS]

  the end of the first chapter is that [TS]

  door that you walk through and you die [TS]

  yeah well that's a great moment where [TS]

  that that's our introduction to the [TS]

  magic keys is that there's there's a [TS]

  gateway that sets your astral self free [TS]

  but by all accounts what happens is [TS]

  basically your body collapses in the [TS]

  heat and it's like you died except that [TS]

  your ghost and you get to go around and [TS]

  see what's going on but it freaks out [TS]

  the people who find your dead body right [TS]

  mhm uh that with yeah yeah i mean which [TS]

  is really cool and that's that's that [TS]

  there there's our fantasy element I mean [TS]

  and there that's definitely here but [TS]

  it's interesting that it's playing with [TS]

  all these other things like the kids the [TS]

  kids story of [TS]

  fleeing after a traumatic event and [TS]

  trying to adapt to a town that would be [TS]

  a story that would be good story on its [TS]

  own about effectively going from having [TS]

  two parents to know parents as their mom [TS]

  for all intents and purposes is checked [TS]

  out yeah she's a drunk and basically yes [TS]

  i would argue she's big she's turned to [TS]

  the bottle for understandable reasons [TS]

  but the net result is that she can [TS]

  therefore she's she's she's not able to [TS]

  process [TS]

  no she's not able to parent right now [TS]

  and so these poor kids have gone from to [TS]

  parents to know parents have been thrust [TS]

  3,000 miles across country and like you [TS]

  said that alone would actually make a [TS]

  really good comic comic but then you [TS]

  throw in escapes spree killer and in [TS]

  some certain supernatural elements and [TS]

  that the backstory of living in Dad's [TS]

  old house and the hints of the mysteries [TS]

  of them for example it's obvious and [TS]

  telling that they do the tempest is a [TS]

  senior play and and there are clues to [TS]

  future books in that shot of of the [TS]

  tempest and you're like a you know any [TS]

  taxes brought up the dad there's a [TS]

  there's a shot of the dad in the senior [TS]

  play and it's the gym mr. i wanted to [TS]

  talk about the dad a little bit because [TS]

  what one of the things that fascinates [TS]

  me about the series is that the dad is a [TS]

  pivotal figure and he's dead [TS]

  very very quickly right here [TS]

  oh yeah quite rapidly he is dead and yet [TS]

  his shadow hangs over everything because [TS]

  they end up in the town we see him as a [TS]

  kid in the in the high school play of [TS]

  the tempest and and over the course of [TS]

  time you know what the history of this [TS]

  house and the history of this town are [TS]

  matters a huge amount of the story but [TS]

  it is kind of fascinating a narrative [TS]

  trick that you know we know he's going [TS]

  to be important at the very beginning [TS]

  and he's immediately killed and that [TS]

  doesn't make him any less important it [TS]

  makes them kind of vitally important it [TS]

  makes it more mystery to unravel yeah so [TS]

  toward the end of of this volume there [TS]

  is a great dialogue that i have come to [TS]

  appreciate more and more as I've read [TS]

  more volumes of the series but it goes [TS]

  for this whole how the whole first book [TS]

  is designed howhow it's uh plotted which [TS]

  is 11 of the sinister character shall we [TS]

  say says you can't understand because [TS]

  you're reading the last chapter of [TS]

  something without having read the first [TS]

  chapter [TS]

  you're a little you're a little guy bode [TS]

  kids always think they're coming into a [TS]

  story at the beginning when usually [TS]

  they're coming in at the end and [TS]

  definitely you know there are two ways [TS]

  to read this story we we're reading it [TS]

  is the beginning of locking key this is [TS]

  this is going to be a six-part series [TS]

  that tells a whole big story and so for [TS]

  us it's the beginning but it's very [TS]

  clear as you're reading it that there's [TS]

  this whole undercurrent the story of the [TS]

  kids coming to the town is just [TS]

  beginning but they are inheriting all of [TS]

  this baggage that comes with their their [TS]

  family's history and this house and the [TS]

  where the magic keys came from and all [TS]

  of this stuff and and that really adds a [TS]

  wonderful i think layer of foreboding of [TS]

  you know god what are they getting [TS]

  themselves into their fleeing this [TS]

  horrible event into the arms of MOR [TS]

  horribleness said the I i love that line [TS]

  too and there's Pat I've only read the [TS]

  first volume and so there's there's [TS]

  clear kind of foreshadowing that the [TS]

  father was involved in in some of this [TS]

  stuff before when he was a kid and so [TS]

  are we starting deal with its a sins of [TS]

  the father sort of story as it plays out [TS]

  which is it is tough because you know [TS]

  the father is is killed at the beginning [TS]

  and so you feel really really bad and [TS]

  then as time goes on you're like what [TS]

  was he involved with this is not [TS]

  spoiling anything to say that that shot [TS]

  of everybody in that the photograph of [TS]

  every one of the tempest you learn over [TS]

  the next few volumes why it's so [TS]

  important to travel in there and what [TS]

  happens to everybody in it so it talks [TS]

  about how the fact that no one [TS]

  generation is insulated from another I'm [TS]

  getting chills just talking about this [TS]

  stuff [TS]

  I'm it literal Jill's well it is [TS]

  refreshing in in an industry with comics [TS]

  especially where how shall I put this [TS]

  delicately writers tend to make stuff up [TS]

  you get the sense sometimes they have no [TS]

  idea what they're doing and they're [TS]

  making it up as they go along and with [TS]

  lock and key [TS]

  the more I've read it the more I know [TS]

  that they this is a story that was [TS]

  planned out to the detail and its really [TS]

  refreshing to get that sense that you're [TS]

  in you know you're in the hands of [TS]

  somebody who is really in complete [TS]

  control [TS]

  all of where the story is going because [TS]

  there have been lots even though it's [TS]

  not it's not over yet and who knows what [TS]

  the ending will be exactly but having [TS]

  read a lot of a lot of this story now [TS]

  five-sixths of this story [TS]

  I don't feel at any point that I've [TS]

  gotten the sense that there's been a [TS]

  trick played on me that in order to [TS]

  figure out how the story goes the story [TS]

  is a you know the story of solid and and [TS]

  reading back to the first volume only [TS]

  reinforces it after i read more of it [TS]

  which I really love because that doesn't [TS]

  you know you might see that in a 6 or 12 [TS]

  issue miniseries but this is something [TS]

  that's gonna last what is it going to be [TS]

  37 issues and it's going to be it i [TS]

  think solid all the way through [TS]

  yeah I'm very often now it's it's it's [TS]

  it's an incredibly well thought-out [TS]

  series and i think one of the things I [TS]

  like about it is that the art style that [TS]

  gabriel rodriguez has there's something [TS]

  almost playful about the way he he does [TS]

  a good job with the menace and all that [TS]

  too but but the lines remind you a lot [TS]

  of the the kind of playful almost anime [TS]

  aesthetic that began to hit comics in [TS]

  the late nineties early aughts the last [TS]

  time comic book stores decided the girls [TS]

  were paying attention to and then you [TS]

  have these books that were drawn with [TS]

  you know girls bouncing ponytails and [TS]

  people with big eyes and and bright [TS]

  shiny smiles and there's there's kind of [TS]

  an element of that in here to which we [TS]

  can get [TS]

  yeah and it underscores the horror so [TS]

  nicely because it points out that you [TS]

  know all these surface appearances are [TS]

  are showing you that things are are cute [TS]

  and no class and clean and and shiny and [TS]

  actually they're not everything is just [TS]

  kind of rotting from the inside out or [TS]

  being dragged down into pits of an [TS]

  Aimable evil bye-bye forces people don't [TS]

  understand but hey there hair looks [TS]

  great what's happening [TS]

  I have to get a lot of credit to give [TS]

  Rodriguez for um for being so consistent [TS]

  with a with the characters now some part [TS]

  of this is over over all of these issues [TS]

  it is just him doing the art which is [TS]

  great because II a lot of series you [TS]

  lose track of who's who [TS]

  because they don't look the same anymore [TS]

  and not only not only is it consistent [TS]

  but he's drawn a [TS]

  these characters that they are instantly [TS]

  recognizable I don't know how even know [TS]

  how to describe it other than to say [TS]

  that everybody looks like they look they [TS]

  don't look like who which one is that [TS]

  you know which guy is that which girl is [TS]

  that [TS]

  yeah you know you you know from the [TS]

  shape of their face from that did the [TS]

  big you know who's got the big chin it's [TS]

  not even like what they're wearing from [TS]

  their eyes or who bites your lip all the [TS]

  time exactly or or who hunches in a [TS]

  specific way and who sits easy and open [TS]

  and and he actually does a really great [TS]

  job in just a few lines conveying a lot [TS]

  this is a guy who the artist is [TS]

  obviously studied body language a lot [TS]

  because just the way people lean into [TS]

  each other or lean into or out of a [TS]

  frame is incredibly telling the body [TS]

  language that he uses for LA through the [TS]

  course of the series is heartbreaking in [TS]

  a way I feel terrible for that to her [TS]

  and Elly Elly is a character went to [TS]

  school with the kid's father and who's [TS]

  now gives the track coach of the school [TS]

  right yeah and we we get such a limited [TS]

  peek into her in the first volume the [TS]

  first few volumes actually and we don't [TS]

  know where this way without spoiling [TS]

  anything this this on Rails kind of [TS]

  complacency where it's you know you you [TS]

  wonder what could be compelling this [TS]

  behavior what what could be behind all [TS]

  of this fear that's driven her into [TS]

  almost Stepford ism yeah there's an [TS]

  answer [TS]

  there's an answer and it's horrifying [TS]

  there's an answer that is absolutely [TS]

  horrifying [TS]

  yeah that describes so much of the [TS]

  series one of the great things about le [TS]

  that she's the mother of Rufus who I [TS]

  think is my favorite character I'm Jason [TS]

  Jason be i should say when you get to [TS]

  vol.2 and beyond the only home talking [TS]

  about but it's one of those characters [TS]

  where you have to go back and and just [TS]

  kind of genuflect at the altar Joe Hill [TS]

  for how careful he's planned out the [TS]

  character and [TS]

  his specific personality traits and [TS]

  everything he says because it is encoded [TS]

  in like two or three layers of meaning [TS]

  so Jason you we've got it's great that [TS]

  we've got you here who's only read [TS]

  volume 1 and at some point we'll we'll [TS]

  let you will put you in the chamber of [TS]

  silence and and maybe discuss what [TS]

  happens after but i'm interested in your [TS]

  take having you know if you've got more [TS]

  to say about about what you think and [TS]

  where you think this is going having [TS]

  only read volume 1 because it's hard for [TS]

  me to think about this story especially [TS]

  since i started with vol.4 about what my [TS]

  take on it would have been because it [TS]

  does it does progress and change and [TS]

  shift gears over over the course of of [TS]

  telling this story so you know what's [TS]

  your take being a babe in the woods [TS]

  whose only read only one and i'm super [TS]

  excited listening to you guys you know [TS]

  talk about where it's going in the fact [TS]

  that it it it is satisfying because like [TS]

  we've talked about on previous podcast [TS]

  there's a lot of stories that you feel [TS]

  halfway through the writer sort of lost [TS]

  their way [TS]

  yeah and its net not a satisfying ending [TS]

  so I'm more anxious to read the rest of [TS]

  them now so I found the the first [TS]

  chapter a little difficult on the [TS]

  artwork side at getting in because the [TS]

  the first you know several scenes are it [TS]

  cuts between the present in the past the [TS]

  farmhouse and the city and you're just [TS]

  meeting the characters and so I had a [TS]

  very kind of closely read it and once or [TS]

  twice go back to be like oh is this [TS]

  character that one which i found it a [TS]

  little bit difficult to get into the [TS]

  story that they quickly went away by the [TS]

  end of the first issue I was thinking [TS]

  about that when you guys were talking [TS]

  about the artwork because I completely [TS]

  agree as it went on the the artwork in [TS]

  the simplicity of it in the sort of vary [TS]

  somewhat manga inspired style that was a [TS]

  nice contrast to the absolute horror of [TS]

  what was going on and made the horse [TS]

  stuff seemed more horrific yes because [TS]

  of its its cuteness [TS]

  I said I got a lot out of the first [TS]

  issue a lot of kind of foreboding you [TS]

  know bad things happened in the first [TS]

  issue and then they went away and they [TS]

  got to Massachusetts you're like oh ok [TS]

  now now it's gonna be a story about them [TS]

  getting their lives back together then [TS]

  right and then they'd be the you know [TS]

  evil sort of follows them and you didn't [TS]

  you see that the spirit in the the well [TS]

  is the same one that's been manipulating [TS]

  the the guy who killed their father and [TS]

  he's coming to get them and so there was [TS]

  you see that the impending doom of that [TS]

  coming as well as the hints particularly [TS]

  not a phrase that you mentioned Jason of [TS]

  kids always think they're coming in at [TS]

  the beginning of a story [TS]

  there's just so much foreboding that I [TS]

  think that's why i hadn't picked up the [TS]

  second issue yet in the sense that like [TS]

  you you feel like there's a car wreck [TS]

  coming and and it's hard to kind of want [TS]

  to pick up the next book to to see the [TS]

  rack [TS]

  yeah you know yes I I see what you're [TS]

  saying that it definitely there is a [TS]

  sense that this is going to be things [TS]

  are going to get worse right otherwise [TS]

  there wouldn't be a story there's going [TS]

  to be more here [TS]

  what surprised me without giving too [TS]

  much away is throughout the series the [TS]

  ability for for each not just even each [TS]

  volume but each issue to shift gears and [TS]

  tell stories almost it's almost Twilight [TS]

  Zone like we're while advancing his [TS]

  general plot or painting in some of the [TS]

  background to to explain what's going to [TS]

  be happening later on he can take these [TS]

  detours Joe hell does where where [TS]

  there's an issue that is aa little bit [TS]

  off format or even if its advancing the [TS]

  story it's it's it's weirdly [TS]

  self-contained it's like this is the [TS]

  issue where again not to give too much [TS]

  away [TS]

  this is the issue where they find the [TS]

  key that lets them become animals right [TS]

  that's like an issue and it's great and [TS]

  it does advance the story but it's great [TS]

  on its own and there's a there's the the [TS]

  issue that is the story is advancing but [TS]

  there's the issue with them [TS]

  the that the teacher the the black [TS]

  teacher who smokes a pipe and it's like [TS]

  you're flashing but when he was young [TS]

  and but he knew the kids and and so he [TS]

  he knows the bad the identity of the bad [TS]

  person looking right and and there that [TS]

  is advancing the plot but it's also got [TS]

  this beautiful internal story almost it [TS]

  reminded me of watchmen wear while [TS]

  advancing the story there's that there's [TS]

  some really artful self contained in an [TS]

  issue like I feel like by the end I it [TS]

  reference what happens at the very [TS]

  beginning and it's beautiful and it's [TS]

  sad and it's and and and there's a lot [TS]

  of that there's an issue with like big [TS]

  monsters fighting each other that's just [TS]

  like that's the issue so it that's [TS]

  that's the thing that surprised me about [TS]

  it is all the overarching story is rough [TS]

  and you know it is like evil trying to [TS]

  defeat the forces of good basically but [TS]

  inside it [TS]

  he doesn't you know it's not a [TS]

  relentless drive to that I guess is what [TS]

  I'm saying there are some really [TS]

  interesting things that are not quite [TS]

  diversions from the story because they [TS]

  all I think matter but you don't feel [TS]

  like you're just on this train track [TS]

  where it's just going to be every single [TS]

  issue is just boom boom boom hitting you [TS]

  with the latest painful plot development [TS]

  which supported that I i really enjoyed [TS]

  that that that in volume to volume 3 I [TS]

  didn't feel like I was just getting [TS]

  hammered with the latest terrible thing [TS]

  that the you know that the forces of [TS]

  evil were we're trying to achieve nice [TS]

  and i did like the the last panel of the [TS]

  the first story arc where you see all of [TS]

  the keys and yeah you sort of start [TS]

  looking at them guessing i wonder what [TS]

  that cadence I wonder what that kid [TS]

  oh yeah and some of them are a little [TS]

  more self evident than others but you [TS]

  still a boy [TS]

  there's a lot of kids going all the way [TS]

  down ya know that the progression of how [TS]

  they introduced us to these keys and [TS]

  what they do is really interesting to [TS]

  where Jason is saying that there are [TS]

  some keys that we get an entire issue [TS]

  dedicated to what they do some of them [TS]

  that we see and then they don't actually [TS]

  find the key for some time [TS]

  others that are talked about and then [TS]

  suddenly discovered and then [TS]

  there's a run i can't remember which [TS]

  volume it's in where we at one of my [TS]

  favorite bits of it i'll find it at some [TS]

  point uh during the discussion where [TS]

  they go through the month februari and [TS]

  we have discovered a bunch of different [TS]

  keys and we don't get a whole lot of [TS]

  information other than look here the [TS]

  kids covered in you know monsters [TS]

  fighting them and one of them's got [TS]

  wings now and you get you get these [TS]

  little vignettes with little other [TS]

  explanation just because you he he's got [TS]

  the economy of story down to where he [TS]

  doesn't have to give you the same kind [TS]

  of look they've discovered a new key [TS]

  like to liken it to anime you know [TS]

  here's another dragon ball let's spend [TS]

  eight hours on this you know because you [TS]

  just you don't you don't have to do that [TS]

  every time but there are some of them [TS]

  that it really it really does matter to [TS]

  know not just what they do but why they [TS]

  were created s williams in the chatroom [TS]

  says that's in look for in volume for i [TS]

  love us William and and that echoes to [TS]

  what i was saying earlier too thanks [TS]

  because i forgot mad at a that issue but [TS]

  that's another thing that's it's you [TS]

  know it's not it's off format got enough [TS]

  that the end of volume 3 is deeply [TS]

  awfully disturbing [TS]

  um there's a lot of disturbing to go to [TS]

  go along but but then then they mix it [TS]

  up right [TS]

  you know it's it's I'll i really like it [TS]

  I mean I i have to say just I've been [TS]

  very impressed with all of it and yet i [TS]

  read vol.5 today and you know afterward [TS]

  I felt kind of antsy and kind of [TS]

  disturbed like i need to i need to to [TS]

  calm down except you know and and not [TS]

  think about for a while you start going [TS]

  to do a podcast about later so right but [TS]

  but there it is affecting and I think [TS]

  it's a good I think a good way I think [TS]

  it's powerful but it's it's you know it [TS]

  can be tough stuff it's it's kinda [TS]

  unflinching this is not i have no great [TS]

  confidence that everybody is going to [TS]

  everything is going to end up ok at the [TS]

  end right number [TS]

  none known for its that impending doom [TS]

  thing [TS]

  yeah if he follows in his dad's [TS]

  footsteps there's always going to be a [TS]

  sacrifice because that's that's been a [TS]

  theme and in in stephen king's work is [TS]

  is that sacrifice is always required to [TS]

  lay down evil and even then it's usually [TS]

  temporary and i would not be surprised [TS]

  if joe hill if that resonates with him [TS]

  since from the three volumes I've read [TS]

  so far one of the things that seems to [TS]

  come up as if your glory and honor and [TS]

  privilege is a horrible price to be paid [TS]

  for it later and it seems to me that the [TS]

  balance is probably going to come due by [TS]

  the end of the book [TS]

  yeah yeah there will be an ending that [TS]

  I'm sure it's really satisfying on a [TS]

  storyteller level and I i think it [TS]

  applies a little bit heartbreaking an [TS]

  emotional level but i'm not sure happy [TS]

  will ever be like it to it probably yeah [TS]

  probably not [TS]

  series was what i expected before i read [TS]

  it to that from the first couple of [TS]

  pages to the end completely changed and [TS]

  continue to change in the way you guys [TS]

  are talking about it now it seems like [TS]

  there's all these different levels [TS]

  beyond the foreboding doom [TS]

  yes in addition to before in addition [TS]

  yeah but in the fact they do the side [TS]

  trips and things like that you know the [TS]

  the comic series it's somewhat reminding [TS]

  me of is the Sandman perhaps not as [TS]

  pretentiously but the fact that there's [TS]

  there's you know in the Sandman they set [TS]

  up this mythology and in here locking [TS]

  key it's it's sort of the keys [TS]

  yeah that that provide a framework but [TS]

  there's it's more than that and then the [TS]

  that's just a platform for telling these [TS]

  other stories you know i still only read [TS]

  like the first 12 issues of Sandman I [TS]

  know that's sacrilege [TS]

  I know it's not at all i'm saying is [TS]

  jason is a fantastic opportunity because [TS]

  we could totally do a reread and I'd [TS]

  love to get your opinion and there's a [TS]

  new Sandman story coming out in the next [TS]

  couple of months [TS]

  well we should we should get them on the [TS]

  calendar because then I can be your test [TS]

  case like Jason is our test case of what [TS]

  if you've only read one volume of lock [TS]

  and key i will be your new reader of [TS]

  Sandman i love Neil Gaiman to I really [TS]

  have liked his novels so I should [TS]

  probably read the thing that made him [TS]

  famous right probably you shovel you [TS]

  should and fruit for those who have been [TS]

  in Sandman withdrawal for a long while [TS]

  this is actually a really great antidote [TS]

  to that sickness i I'm gonna be [TS]

  sacrilegious and it into this is where [TS]

  the comic the comics community comes [TS]

  after the torches and i'll actually like [TS]

  this better than Sandman um but I think [TS]

  Jason needs to reach you for weeks i [TS]

  think that maybe people clutching their [TS]

  pearls and live to she had no taste but [TS]

  there's a lot of reasons for that and [TS]

  I'd be happy to either expand them on [TS]

  twitter or in private correspondence or [TS]

  something but i think there are like i [TS]

  said i think game is a brilliant writer [TS]

  and I like that he does the same thing [TS]

  Elmore does where they blindly [TS]

  re-appropriate and mix up elements from [TS]

  history and literature and there's kind [TS]

  of that hey that guy moment when you [TS]

  realize that they're dealing with you [TS]

  know ancient mythology and it's casual [TS]

  incorporate into modern life but I think [TS]

  there's a streak of nastiness and gaming [TS]

  score that that I find kind of [TS]

  off-putting so and although again I [TS]

  stand by my assessment that Joe Hill's [TS]

  not sentimental i think that he has a [TS]

  lot of compassion for the for the [TS]

  weakness of the human condition and I [TS]

  just empathize that a lot better than I [TS]

  do with with the game in that approach [TS]

  you know i can actually see that is the [TS]

  the there's a lot more heart in lock and [TS]

  key where the Sandman is good [TS]

  it always stays it's somewhat of an [TS]

  intellectual layer even when it has [TS]

  pretty compelling characters you know I [TS]

  would strike strikes me about it and [TS]

  again I need to read more Sandman but [TS]

  having read a little bit of it is that [TS]

  it struck me as being very kind of [TS]

  fantastical and removed and got this [TS]

  dark Kenneth kind of world of well it's [TS]

  very for voting and all of that in the [TS]

  butt lock and key you know is and this [TS]

  goes to again [TS]

  chill is a really good writer but [TS]

  thinking of him as as also in that in [TS]

  the Stephen King family [TS]

  stylistically not just literally stephen [TS]

  king and and lucky is like this too [TS]

  it's set in a in a real world that is [TS]

  then thats got this monday anity to it [TS]

  and then it's got this layer of kind of [TS]

  horror on top of it or weirdness and end [TS]

  and it doesn't feel like a magical world [TS]

  even though there's magic in it whereas [TS]

  the the Sandman that I've read anyway [TS]

  it feels like a you know magical [TS]

  fairytale world in its like you're [TS]

  almost like you're coming from a [TS]

  complete completely opposite direction [TS]

  to get to your story from the two of [TS]

  them this is like our world with magic [TS]

  in it and the Sandman always seem to be [TS]

  like a fairytale world yeah yeah which [TS]

  is not necessarily bad or good just [TS]

  different [TS]

  it's because the Sandman was told from [TS]

  that point of view right the main [TS]

  characters are the otherworldly [TS]

  characters writer the main characters [TS]

  are us are these kids yeah well these [TS]

  these kids having this at adventure [TS]

  Lisa your husband is an a's fan and [TS]

  those zones neighs hat to do ever did [TS]

  you have issues with the fact that one [TS]

  of our main characters whereas days had [TS]

  all the time I like I don't like the [TS]

  fact that it was said in a part of [TS]

  northern california that's not you know [TS]

  wall-to-wall millionaires or pixar [TS]

  employees or whatever to valley is where [TS]

  they started [TS]

  yeah why I thought it was a i thought [TS]

  was a north lisa Noah oh I think I [TS]

  thought it was like it was it was better [TS]

  was it like up in like chico or similar [TS]

  but anyway yeah it's not your usual [TS]

  Northern California several northern [TS]

  california and i just got back from [TS]

  spending two days of in door county so [TS]

  you know I drove through a lot of that [TS]

  area too [TS]

  it's nice to see a depiction of [TS]

  California that's not either [TS]

  stereotypical Southern California [TS]

  stereotypical san francisco bay area [TS]

  I don't know if the the creative team [TS]

  came out and actually spent some time [TS]

  knocking around the area or if it's just [TS]

  a lot of well educated guesswork apart [TS]

  but i think they really nailed it was [TS]

  nice to see ya know Jason breaking I was [TS]

  I hadn't thought about this series that [TS]

  may actually make your head explode [TS]

  since we've gone back and forth on [TS]

  preacher but how [TS]

  what was striking me is again since this [TS]

  is a really distinctive visual style for [TS]

  from both the characters and the artist [TS]

  as i thought you know the last time that [TS]

  I associated book this strong with the [TS]

  artist who is consistent all the way [TS]

  through with steve dillon although to be [TS]

  fair with dylan always characters look [TS]

  like because they all have the same [TS]

  shall copy the fish but but they're [TS]

  they're always there there is you have [TS]

  to beat the Dillon has this really [TS]

  distinctive style where you know you [TS]

  look like [TS]

  yep that's a steve dillon buck did to [TS]

  that consistency did you find that when [TS]

  you're going through the the first trade [TS]

  or yeah I i did i'll see I wouldn't [TS]

  compare it to dylan's stuff just [TS]

  stylistically my brain can go there [TS]

  gotten it but there was I mean the [TS]

  artwork was very consistent in the first [TS]

  issue but I think it was just the pacing [TS]

  of the first couple of pages made it [TS]

  difficult for me to get in and I'm not [TS]

  sure that was actually unintentional [TS]

  because then once you did work to sort [TS]

  of get in and understand then you're [TS]

  hooked [TS]

  yeah I can't see any preacher in sorry [TS]

  no because it was just basically maybe [TS]

  it was the square square jaw in the [TS]

  young man but no there was just kind of [TS]

  there was such a marvelous some [TS]

  aesthetic consistency that again the [TS]

  first thing I thought of was was they [TS]

  had that that same consistency of line [TS]

  and preacher but story-wise there no [TS]

  resemblance to each other whatsoever the [TS]

  i actually had to be on IDW's website [TS]

  right now on there they're locking key [TS]

  page and not only can you buy the books [TS]

  you can actually buy replicas of the [TS]

  keys [TS]

  oh of course you can oh my god that that [TS]

  uh that would frighten me actually I [TS]

  basically it's about Vikings and it's [TS]

  not contiguous there's a number of [TS]

  distinct series arcs for example the [TS]

  first collection focuses around a guy [TS]

  named Spencer and the returned who comes [TS]

  back to take who wages organ somebody [TS]

  who kicked him out of a Viking [TS]

  settlement a long time ago they cover [TS]

  mission that they cover early Christian [TS]

  monks with the cross in the hammer on [TS]

  there is up the volume i just finished [TS]

  which is the Icelandic trilogy wrapped [TS]

  up the whole series and it's about five [TS]

  different generations of Icelandic [TS]

  sellers from the first Norwegians who [TS]

  came over escaping a political about [TS]

  political situation on a around one [TS]

  thing around AD 1000 possible before and [TS]

  it goes down to the success of five [TS]

  generations and how they basically come [TS]

  to rule the island throught through [TS]

  terror and ignorance and the writing is [TS]

  it again not a sentimental series the [TS]

  writing is often for a pitiless but it [TS]

  one of the things he returns to over and [TS]

  over again is how civilization that the [TS]

  the trappings of civilization that we [TS]

  all take for granted were kindled and [TS]

  stops and starts during a period of time [TS]

  when life was very harsh and the weather [TS]

  was terrible and and the culture was was [TS]

  very much an honor [TS]

  honor driven one and the things people [TS]

  do to survive and thrive and the balance [TS]

  between the atavistic impulses that will [TS]

  keep you alive verses from the more [TS]

  abstract human intellect it intellectual [TS]

  impulses are sentiments that have come [TS]

  to define humanity as well the concept [TS]

  and at end of civilization and again i [TS]

  repeat Vikings so no biking's right no [TS]

  one kind of like through line with with [TS]

  it sort of sort of automatically linked [TS]

  they're all about Vikings but sort of [TS]

  different stories being told about [TS]

  tonight yes [TS]

  yeah there's one that set the Faroe [TS]

  Islands there's another one that said [TS]

  there's some other set in Iceland there [TS]

  are some that are settin on during the [TS]

  period the periodic sackings of the [TS]

  British Isles things like that [TS]

  oh there's one about set called the [TS]

  plague window which is set in Russia and [TS]

  deals with what happens to a woman who [TS]

  who is widowed again during a plague in [TS]

  what she has to do to survive and fend [TS]

  off the attentions of the vigilantes who [TS]

  have taken over the village in the wake [TS]

  of every figure of authority dying [TS]

  during a plague [TS]

  well they do return to spend in one [TS]

  volume send the immoral where he has to [TS]

  fend off a challenge to our that he ends [TS]

  up settling but there's no one main [TS]

  character I mean if anything the [TS]

  characters kind of the the Viking ethos [TS]

  and it the earliest story i think is [TS]

  setting about 780 ad and that it usually [TS]

  runs to about 1,100 so it's it's a [TS]

  really bloody really brutal period of [TS]

  history and it's also fascinating one [TS]

  because you're talking about a culture [TS]

  that had rammed up repeatedly against [TS]

  the Roman Empire and this is another [TS]

  Roman parking spot was also be to [TS]

  crumble and so this is about what [TS]

  happens to people who are kind of [TS]

  whipsawed between all of these these [TS]

  different forces scrambling to to grab [TS]

  grab resources in a really dark attic [TS]

  time [TS]

  alright so it's 5050 issues collected as [TS]

  seven trade paperbacks i have from [TS]

  right-handers yeah I have like I have [TS]

  like to them on hand i think of another [TS]

  five bird in my collaborator fibroid in [TS]

  my collection somewhere and i really [TS]

  like bryan woods work in general because [TS]

  the country and what happens to her and [TS]

  and what happens around her and um the [TS]

  theme within the theme of that series is [TS]

  is I mean that the overall morale is [TS]

  there's no such thing as a geographic [TS]

  cure because wherever you go there you [TS]

  are [TS]

  but under the but another one of the [TS]

  themes is that place can shape you more [TS]

  subtly than you can imagine and you [TS]

  often don't realize that until you [TS]

  really nice fresh modern sensibility and [TS]

  keep he doesn't bring that to bear on [TS]

  the vikings but he does do a great job [TS]

  of casting their societal arms into a [TS]

  perspective that modernize connection [TS]

  modern eyes and anna and mentalities can [TS]

  understand and rock and I think that's a [TS]

  real gift for any storytelling to be [TS]

  able to take a history to be able to [TS]

  take any historic period and put into [TS]

  context for somebody who's coming at it [TS]

  from from their own you know many many [TS]

  centuries removed perspective so yeah I [TS]

  would end and again best of the series [TS]

  is totally done so there's no need to [TS]

  worry about having to sort through 20 [TS]

  years of continuity your backstory [TS]

  yeah yeah yeah yeah and it's and i also [TS]

  have anything the vikings are pretty [TS]

  under represented in popular literature [TS]

  anyway so you might as well there's the [TS]

  big boom in Viking comics and that no [TS]

  that never happened [TS]

  now now something something I should [TS]

  throw in the just got announced as Brian [TS]

  Wood is is taking on the adjective lists [TS]

  x-men title and and it's going to start [TS]

  in an all tea all uniting is so excited [TS]

  about that yeah [TS]

  x-men misleading title come on really [TS]

  get to be fairly accusing him of [TS]

  innovation the sixties where you know [TS]

  men was it seemed to stand for Humanity [TS]

  in general Charles Xavier was a horrible [TS]

  horrible sexist or not [TS]

  okay that's great that's I things i have [TS]

  never even heard of i love it i love [TS]

  being completely surprised by what are [TS]

  you reading Jason brightman what are you [TS]

  reading [TS]

  well I'll go in the opposite sort of [TS]

  direction and the book i'm most enjoying [TS]

  now is matt fraction's Hawkeye I've [TS]

  heard such good things about that but it [TS]

  is so good and we can talk about it on a [TS]

  upcoming podcast because i think the [TS]

  trade comes out in a month or two [TS]

  yeah it comes I i want to say that comes [TS]

  out early februari buddy everything [TS]

  fractions been touching his turn to [TS]

  absolute gold [TS]

  yeah the so this Hawkeye story every [TS]

  issue is self-contained uh no real [TS]

  continuity between the issues and it's [TS]

  sort of as the kind of preamble of the [TS]

  book says this is what Hawkeye does when [TS]

  he's not saving the world with the [TS]

  Avengers which is mostly hanging out in [TS]

  his apartment and getting into trouble [TS]

  loop there's a beautiful scene where a [TS]

  Tony Stark is over his house and I can't [TS]

  even remember why but during the entire [TS]

  conversation Hawkeyes trying to get his [TS]

  his stereo system hooked up and failing [TS]

  miserably to the point that a stark says [TS]

  look I'll just buy you a new one forget [TS]

  it let's go [TS]

  it's a really really funny serious they [TS]

  did just have a aa2 issue event that [TS]

  wasn't self-contained because it was two [TS]

  issues but the artwork was so beautiful [TS]

  and the the cover of one was a VHS tape [TS]

  and the cover of the second one was that [TS]

  VHS tape chattered and blood everywhere [TS]

  as it was a a tape that showed Hawkeye [TS]

  murdering somebody and this was a shield [TS]

  tape it was a VHS thing not even a [TS]

  digital tape and then it got stolen and [TS]

  was out for auction and Hawkeye had to [TS]

  get it back and it was a really really [TS]

  funny started and that's the thing that [TS]

  stories are so kind of light-hearted and [TS]

  funny with a lot of heart and the [TS]

  artworks beautiful and it's unlike any [TS]

  other book on the Shelf right [TS]

  now I'm reading an article here that [TS]

  refers to it as the Avenger who is just [TS]

  a dude and says that the plot of issue [TS]

  number one is that his lair landlords [TS]

  have something about the rent and his [TS]

  dog needs to go to the vet [TS]

  wow wow that's all if it was a cat i [TS]

  think the dramatic statement be up [TS]

  dramatically with me out tremendously in [TS]

  the latest issue of Captain Marvel [TS]

  that's what Captain Marvel has to do is [TS]

  take her cat to the vet now will be [TS]

  seated during the pivotal sticking [TS]

  cramming your cat carrier secrets are [TS]

  with that our vets funding secretly [TS]

  funding Marvel now or like pet insurance [TS]

  secretly behind Marvel Comics know [TS]

  so besides that i'm also reading and [TS]

  enjoying the new value into books [TS]

  oh yes all my god they're so good which [TS]

  is surprising you know I was a big fan [TS]

  of them back in the early nineties and [TS]

  you have to remember that in the early [TS]

  nineties was more like the late eighties [TS]

  automatically it was before the image [TS]

  comics and the the big capes and badly [TS]

  drawn characters and it was still about [TS]

  story and it really feels even though I [TS]

  everything in the new valiant comics [TS]

  have all the modern sensibilities the [TS]

  the stories feel very much like those [TS]

  original valiant issues its they're [TS]

  doing a really great job and there you [TS]

  go changing stuff and making it more [TS]

  modern but keeping the spirit of the [TS]

  characters so much intact [TS]

  that's cool i remember you talking to me [TS]

  about the old value stuff and then now [TS]

  they're now there's new family and stuff [TS]

  new value stuff end of them uh elegant [TS]

  i'm really liking Shadow Man and it's [TS]

  almost embarrassing to say but a [TS]

  bloodshot is really really good [TS]

  I didn't expect to like it at all no me [TS]

  neither and the bloodshot the name it's [TS]

  just so stupid and it's kind of a [TS]

  cliché of a a character now even back [TS]

  then it really wasn't where the the [TS]

  characters got these nanites that you [TS]

  know can rebuild them from any injury [TS]

  but they've done a really sort of [TS]

  interesting take on that as well as it's [TS]

  the the character who doesn't know who [TS]

  he is and he's got to figure out his [TS]

  past and it's been pretty exciting and [TS]

  drawn really well and I did not expect [TS]

  to like it at all which then makes it so [TS]

  much sweeter when you do [TS]

  cool is what are you reading way too [TS]

  much map the new value books I've been [TS]

  catching up on the one that i was most [TS]

  delinquent on his Harbinger which is [TS]

  kids with powers but not where everybody [TS]

  gets together in a happy-go-lucky team [TS]

  and they have a nice mansion and their [TS]

  own jet and everything its you're [TS]

  bringing me down man [TS]

  yeah you know it the it's a different [TS]

  take on superhero tropes what what [TS]

  they're doing across the valiant line [TS]

  and I've been I've been really impressed [TS]

  with it and at first i was like a value [TS]

  books are back aren't well that's [TS]

  interesting they're going to make more [TS]

  crappy video games [TS]

  oh wait no these are people who actually [TS]

  care okay great we have an episode [TS]

  giant-sized we talk about that plug 47 [TS]

  ronin has been really good even though [TS]

  I've missed you so Jimbo for a number of [TS]

  months as stan sakai has focused on [TS]

  telling what is considered in terms of [TS]

  ancient culture one of the definitive [TS]

  great Japanese myths in comic form i [TS]

  don't think it's getting a whole lot of [TS]

  attention because it's the guy who does [TS]

  use audio Jimbo doing an ancient [TS]

  Japanese feudal myth but it's a really [TS]

  good book and it's it's a limited run it [TS]

  only be around for a little while and [TS]

  then I'm catching up on all kinds of [TS]

  stuff I'm digging back story i'm gonna [TS]

  start back at amazing spider-man 600 [TS]

  work forward and see if they really are [TS]

  full of crap when they say they've been [TS]

  playing this for nearly 10 years to do [TS]

  things that raised and Benjamin's blood [TS]

  pressure [TS]

  what else there's something there are 0 [TS]

  new avengers now New Avengers i'm [TS]

  reading because i'm totally nuts for [TS]

  Doctor Strange and we'll pick up just [TS]

  about anything that he's in if if [TS]

  anything just to to to cast a [TS]

  disapproving glare at it because I think [TS]

  he's the the most underused [TS]

  cool character that Marvel has but New [TS]

  Avengers takes the conceit of this [TS]

  Illuminati group that he and Professor [TS]

  Xavier and Ireland Richards down for me [TS]

  Reed Richards Reed Richards name or [TS]

  these guys got together and decided they [TS]

  were going to be the secret Council of [TS]

  superpower do that we're going to rule [TS]

  earth and Black Bolt showed up and was [TS]

  like yeah i'm i'm in um I'll just hang [TS]

  out in the back [TS]

  well he didn't say that he wrote it on [TS]

  oh yeah he said it with his eyes with it [TS]

  because got a lot and signing [TS]

  interpretive dance then at some point [TS]

  these guys came into possession of the [TS]

  infinity gems which are very important [TS]

  thing in the Marvel Universe going back [TS]

  to infinity gauntlet and the New [TS]

  Avengers are one of the many Avengers [TS]

  plus adjective books but it's it's the [TS]

  one that I find the most interesting [TS]

  compelling alongside what I would argue [TS]

  is is is is starting to be a pretty [TS]

  compelling run on the core Avengers book [TS]

  by jonathan hickman where the core [TS]

  vendors book they're gonna have like 80 [TS]

  Avengers or something they've got guys [TS]

  like manifold who I forgot even existed [TS]

  whose powers to essentially create a [TS]

  door to go from point A to point B [TS]

  that's all he does is literally all he [TS]

  does is it he's a really good plot [TS]

  device [TS]

  how is that any different than close [TS]

  though of cloak-and-dagger that's like [TS]

  clothes whole thing as he runs around [TS]

  his hot girlfriend and you have this [TS]

  less dark this guy just has a door and [TS]

  when you go through cloak and heat you [TS]

  know the darkness tries to each you so [TS]

  it's less than effective door this is [TS]

  just this is just a guy opening a door [TS]

  and on the other side is where you need [TS]

  to go now he's literally the Avengers [TS]

  doorman it's all the jagers early [TS]

  literally is i think i do improve a day [TS]

  so where would you like to go there you [TS]

  go have a good day [TS]

  you know animal the that the writing on [TS]

  him and some of the other characters [TS]

  stuff that people that they haven't [TS]

  messed around with that much they [TS]

  they're bringing some X x-men or former [TS]

  x-force people in like cannonballing [TS]

  rector and they've the the cast of this [TS]

  book three issues in is about 20 people [TS]

  but there's some big threat that they've [TS]

  all got a fight but but New Avengers is [TS]

  the Illuminati guys facing a bigger [TS]

  threat that is is kind of on the scale [TS]

  of cascading quantum chaos threatening [TS]

  to end the universe and so they say well [TS]

  III guess we're gonna have to agree to [TS]

  reassemble the infinity gauntlet and I'm [TS]

  sure that this is going to go really [TS]

  well yeah ultimate power really never [TS]

  corrupts at all it'll be fine [TS]

  no my go-to book overall though is is [TS]

  Deadpool which has consistently [TS]

  entertain me in the four issues that [TS]

  we've gotten since they relaunched it [TS]

  without a bunch of weird stuff Daniel [TS]

  was doing with it the is he still the [TS]

  fighting dead presidents [TS]

  yes he's still finding dead presidents I [TS]

  think I think he fights Abe Lincoln in [TS]

  the next one big one that's a big one [TS]

  that's a big it's a big milestone I told [TS]

  i told the the guys riding it that if if [TS]

  they didn't have something interesting [TS]

  in store for military Millard Fillmore [TS]

  I that was it i'm just going to drop the [TS]

  book but now they're there's so much [TS]

  good stuff out there i recently tried [TS]

  catching up on a bunch of the new 52 [TS]

  stuff which a lot of which I dropped one [TS]

  or two months in just because it wasn't [TS]

  doing it for me now going back and you [TS]

  know looking back issues i realize [TS]

  exactly why I dropped 99.9 percent of [TS]

  these books because either editorial was [TS]

  you know running roughshod over the over [TS]

  the writers or it just been they didn't [TS]

  gel very few of them still work i'm glad [TS]

  that I stuck with the Batman books i'm [TS]

  glad that i stopped pouring needless [TS]

  piles of money in the green lantern [TS]

  family of Lucky Charms books [TS]

  beeping red LED screen letters we what [TS]

  me landed Zoolander we got lanterns for [TS]

  every color in the rainbow [TS]

  I got all the legends here rainbow [TS]

  Lanterns have a good like my little pony [TS]

  kind of competitor rainbow lanterns [TS]

  yeah yeah frankly I would read at this [TS]

  point i would rather read the my little [TS]

  pony friendship is magic book then any [TS]

  of the green lantern books because I i [TS]

  feel like i'm getting one line of book [TS]

  worth of story spread across [TS]

  five different comics which is just that [TS]

  I'm sure that it probably does some good [TS]

  things for their balance sheet but i'm [TS]

  just i'm not into that kind of crap [TS]

  anymore [TS]

  well you're you're you're reading a lot [TS]

  of stuff I gotta say way too much I i'm [TS]

  not i'm not reading so much and much of [TS]

  the stuff that I'm reading is boring [TS]

  because I've talked about before you [TS]

  know still reading ultimate spider-man [TS]

  now Jason if they had the gender key [TS]

  then they could take Ultimate Spider [TS]

  Woman and turned her back in 2 Peter [TS]

  Parker there you go would solve [TS]

  everything so walking key mash-up with [TS]

  the Ultimate Universe and then we'll [TS]

  then finally there would be a peter [TS]

  parker who was a lot [TS]

  parker who was a lot [TS]

  I've again that'd be nice speaking of [TS]

  which i did read amazing spider-man 700 [TS]

  and there's a whole podcast a me [TS]

  complaining about that I refer you to [TS]

  that podcast for more i'm enjoying [TS]

  all-new i'm enjoying all-new x-men which [TS]

  is again Bendis and that is the kind of [TS]

  ridiculous and yet a delightful premise [TS]

  of the original x-men being thrown into [TS]

  the modern-day world that we live in or [TS]

  at least the Marvel Universe equivalent [TS]

  and being kind of horrified and dealing [TS]

  with the fact that what happened to them [TS]

  when they all got all ball with a that [TS]

  all growed up or in some people's cases [TS]

  got all megalomaniacal and died jun Greg [TS]

  not naming names Phoenix anyway uh huh [TS]

  i'm enjoying that I think that that's [TS]

  actually exploiting that premise really [TS]

  well and it's a it's all about the [TS]

  characters and and and how they interact [TS]

  with the world and then they put kids [TS]

  sort of Kitty Pryde is their babysitter [TS]

  which is hilarious that give you [TS]

  practice the authority figure over the [TS]

  original x-men so I I've been enjoying [TS]

  that and and and i continue to enjoy [TS]

  extreme x-men by Gregg Popovich just got [TS]

  canceled which makes me very sad [TS]

  so we're gonna officially have the wake [TS]

  for extreme x-men because I was [TS]

  following it to such a great book [TS]

  alternate universe hopping x-men [TS]

  alternate Wolverine alternate micro kid [TS]

  Nightcrawler led by the dazzler from the [TS]

  main marvel universe who now apparently [TS]

  is available to be in that other x-men [TS]

  book with all the other women x-men I [TS]

  suppose so [TS]

  somebody should give dazzler call she's [TS]

  she's free she's still dating Sam got [TS]

  three [TS]

  no no no she's been she's been busy [TS]

  yeah she's been she's been hopping [TS]

  hopping from from alternate reality to [TS]

  alternate reality great book going to be [TS]

  very sad to see it go but but I'm that [TS]

  reading currently two x-men books that's [TS]

  a record for me since the days when i [TS]

  was reading x-men new mutants in high [TS]

  school so [TS]

  oh I wanted to mention also that I [TS]

  signed up for Marvel's digital comics [TS]

  unlimited who which is now if you if you [TS]

  pay whenever is fifty dollars for a year [TS]

  it will actually write work on the ipad [TS]

  and it's not too bad [TS]

  surprisingly it used to be flash based [TS]

  entirely and it [TS]

  basically like Netflix for Marvel Comics [TS]

  it won't give you anything current but [TS]

  it does have a 10,000 comics they go [TS]

  back they got a lot of classics from the [TS]

  sixties a lot of stuff from about sort [TS]

  of 225 years ago and then kind of [TS]

  sporadic throughout that other error [TS]

  other issues that they've digitized but [TS]

  it's actually if you've got you know if [TS]

  you if you got a lot of time and want to [TS]

  read lots of old Marvel Comics it's [TS]

  probably a pretty good deal certainly [TS]

  better than buying you will get the [TS]

  current stuff but if you're not really [TS]

  focused on the current stuff and and [TS]

  reading spider-man 600 would be just as [TS]

  easy as reading spider-man 700 might be [TS]

  worth checking out its some still in [TS]

  beta I get that I get the distinct [TS]

  impression that they have more work to [TS]

  do it would really benefit from being [TS]

  inside a nap instead of just being in [TS]

  the browser and I can't believe they [TS]

  aren't going to do that but but it does [TS]

  work in the browser so you can't you [TS]

  can't view offline then no no it's it's [TS]

  a it's definitely like I said it's the [TS]

  netflix of comics you basically need to [TS]

  be online and you watched in in the [TS]

  browser and it but it does work which is [TS]

  great because before it was only on a [TS]

  computer with flash and I wasn't very [TS]

  good and once it's on the ipad it [TS]

  changes the game a lot it makes it a [TS]

  much more valuable thing so I've got [TS]

  some get some old issues of strange [TS]

  tales I need to catch up with maybe that [TS]

  will be the way I was reading old old [TS]

  Marvel events where I I don't have to [TS]

  get upset about about their continuity [TS]

  decisions or anything like that i can [TS]

  just sort of read the miniseries and you [TS]

  know i can read house of them and be [TS]

  like that was ok that's what that was [TS]

  all about and not worry about like what [TS]

  does this mean and you know it just let [TS]

  it's like it and I can't believe they [TS]

  did that it's just I don't [TS]

  it happened in the past they reset it [TS]

  all anyway it doesn't really matter and [TS]

  I can you know I have to do is just wave [TS]

  your hands around it's done [TS]

  yep that's right I said no mutants [TS]

  why are there more mutants I said did [TS]

  was I not clear [TS]

  no more mutants are you reading those [TS]

  old advancing going boy that really did [TS]

  change everything [TS]

  yeah yeah that happens all the time who [TS]

  I can't believe he died wow that really [TS]

  did change comics fundamental [TS]

  in every way forever it's hilarious to [TS]

  read it's becoming more character is [TS]

  dying and know that they've already come [TS]

  back and died and come back multiple [TS]

  times since then but and and been reborn [TS]

  as a child and I would love to do a [TS]

  comic book club on house of them because [TS]

  looking back [TS]

  oh gods animals 10 years since that [TS]

  thinking about you you have to admire [TS]

  that the scope of the ambition and this [TS]

  year batting insanity that was it [TS]

  many of that of of the twists and turns [TS]

  and that I'm and for what is essentially [TS]

  an imaginary yes it probably is [TS]

  essentially basically like Bobby in the [TS]

  shower at dallas i know i told i told i [TS]

  told my wife that i was rid of what the [TS]

  plot wasn't and she said why why would [TS]

  they turn it back was everybody happy I [TS]

  said yeah well then why would they [TS]

  because it wasn't real she's like but it [TS]

  was real they changed it to be real why [TS]

  would they know that's the thing that [TS]

  kills me is is there's nothing in that [TS]

  that's that holds up i mean sure Steve [TS]

  Rogers gets hosed but you know demanded [TS]

  the hosted marble company we look at it [TS]

  but you know everyone else is super [TS]

  happy and fulfilled them and I I field [TS]

  understand what the caustic to this [TS]

  universe is better [TS]

  let's keep it and instead it's all know [TS]

  you hear you're crazy and imagining [TS]

  things through everything has to ruin it [TS]

  for everyone again [TS]

  well there's this out there there's so [TS]

  many different ridiculous plot lines [TS]

  they've done like days of future past [TS]

  age of apocalypse [TS]

  I would be believed to a podcast and age [TS]

  of apocalypse just to talk about the [TS]

  hair alone and you know where we're [TS]

  living in the year of days of future [TS]

  past right [TS]

  it's set in the year 2013 wow that's [TS]

  great and they're making and they're [TS]

  making that as as a as a movie here and [TS]

  they're merging the the x-men movie [TS]

  universes from the patrick stewart era [TS]

  and the first class Sarah it's all it's [TS]

  all colliding [TS]

  oh yeah somehow like the star trek [TS]

  universe is do exactly i was sort of [TS]

  kind of my gues exactly we good right I [TS]

  guess [TS]

  well I'm I'm glad that I'm not the only [TS]

  one crazy enough to to love all-new [TS]

  x-men it's it's been a lot of fun and I [TS]

  thought well maybe this will work for [TS]

  six issues but i think i think there is [TS]

  an enduring [TS]

  concept for at least a little while in [TS]

  that book I i think it comes down to [TS]

  brian michael bendis being you know [TS]

  focused on he's here he's focused more [TS]

  on the characters and trying to take the [TS]

  concept and following it to some [TS]

  interesting logical interesting places [TS]

  and you know I that is why i love [TS]

  ultimate spider-man and it's the same i [TS]

  feel like it's the same kind of tricks [TS]

  which is he's got these young x-men and [TS]

  they've been thrown forward in time and [TS]

  what would you do if that was you and [TS]

  then you know he's explored all that and [TS]

  i think yeah it's still it's still plus [TS]

  the stories he writes or so decompressed [TS]

  that five issues like one story so he's [TS]

  got lots of stories lots of issues left [TS]

  in him even if he was like five stories [TS]

  to tell that's going to take him two [TS]

  more years about worth worth noting and [TS]

  plugging and you know this is what [TS]

  happens when you bring a guy with comic [TS]

  book shows on your show [TS]

  it's got a new artist as of this latest [TS]

  issue and he's the guests Ongina size 10 [TS]

  which will be like weeks and weeks ago [TS]

  when this X weeks ago little have been [TS]

  weeks ago weeks in the distant past [TS]

  yes jump into your time machine built by [TS]

  Forge and and jump into the past and [TS]

  listen to that episode just insert the [TS]

  oh it does not go into the 21st century [TS]

  it only works with because its analog [TS]

  yeah it's a y2k problem with the [TS]
