00:01:12   welcome good to have you here haha haha [TS]

00:01:15   serenity Caldwell is also here hello [TS]

00:01:18   hello also slightly under protest [TS]

00:01:21   although I think I'm more mad at Dan [TS]

00:01:23   because i watched episode 11 it was out [TS]

00:01:25   in theaters because my parents wanted to [TS]

00:01:27   go see it in 3d and then he made me [TS]

00:01:30   watch it again because he had not like [TS]

00:01:32   you say that I've made you want because [TS]

00:01:34   i saw this in the theaters to get into [TS]

00:01:35   that no no I mean I saw this when it was [TS]

00:01:38   re-released like six months ago I [TS]

00:01:39   thought you should hear the one [TS]

00:01:41   everybody there is enough blame to go [TS]

00:01:43   around this is just the blame podcast [TS]

00:01:47   let's get this out of the way Steve [TS]

00:01:48   what's is also here you heard him [TS]

00:01:49   laughing about blame [TS]

00:01:51   hi Steve yep dead to me lots a more [TS]

00:01:56   convincing EP and I say again because [TS]

00:01:59   once apparently is not enough [TS]

00:02:01   yep [TS]

00:02:02   now Monty ashley is here he was he's [TS]

00:02:05   gonna bring a much-needed level of [TS]

00:02:07   sanity or insanity [TS]

00:02:09   I'm not sure which to the proceedings [TS]

00:02:11   haimanti thanks for being here i am [TS]

00:02:13   pleased to be here i was pleased to [TS]

00:02:14   watch this movie [TS]

00:02:16   they're also dead to me and then to [TS]

00:02:19   people who i'm very glad to have on this [TS]

00:02:21   podcast [TS]

00:02:22   first off because you got the other guys [TS]

00:02:24   are fine they're fine but but I'm glad [TS]

00:02:26   great losses here we haven't heard him [TS]

00:02:27   talk about star wars since the first [TS]

00:02:29   Star Wars podcast we did where we we [TS]

00:02:32   were recorded for about five hours and I [TS]

00:02:34   think his wife like made him sleep in [TS]

00:02:36   the basement for a week after that Greg [TS]

00:02:37   welcome back [TS]

00:02:39   you're on my list snow yeah I'm I've [TS]

00:02:41   been on your list for like 18 years now [TS]

00:02:42   and John siracusa of course is here [TS]

00:02:45   despite I think there was a court order [TS]

00:02:48   or something that you know despite his [TS]

00:02:50   protests he is here and apparently did [TS]

00:02:52   rewatch star wars episode 1 the Phantom [TS]

00:02:55   Menace hai jaan i'm assuming counselors [TS]

00:02:57   will be available against this episode [TS]

00:02:59   to talk to us about our any feelings we [TS]

00:03:01   might have yeah talk us down the special [TS]

00:03:03   hotline on standby man i'm impressed job [TS]

00:03:05   is John Ryu from the fetal ball [TS]

00:03:08   I'm impressed with John watch the movie [TS]

00:03:09   that doesn't exist well according to him [TS]

00:03:13   that's why me why me would be well [TS]

00:03:15   that's what we had to do I I'd like to [TS]

00:03:18   start actually because I I sensed a [TS]

00:03:21   great with his servants in the forest [TS]

00:03:24   and that disturbance which was made out [TS]

00:03:27   of midi-chlorians i believe it's sort of [TS]

00:03:29   a cloud midi-chlorians suggested that I [TS]

00:03:33   ask if anybody John siracusa had any [TS]

00:03:35   opening remarks that they would like to [TS]

00:03:37   make before we get started I prepared a [TS]

00:03:39   brief statement that John thoughts i do [TS]

00:03:43   have a brief opening statement [TS]

00:03:44   yes this is like the opening of [TS]

00:03:46   Nuremberg yes it's it's it's it is i [TS]

00:03:50   think i've said all the same things [TS]

00:03:51   before but they belong here in this [TS]

00:03:53   place in this episode I will be brief so [TS]

00:03:55   we've done a bunch of episodes of star [TS]

00:03:57   wars before three beloved movies that [TS]

00:04:01   make a nice little story the first we [TS]

00:04:03   meet Luke and the last movie Vader's [TS]

00:04:05   dead empires defeated Luke is a Jedi [TS]

00:04:07   sorry if you want to the spoiler horn [TS]

00:04:08   for that too late [TS]

00:04:10   yeah there's just one wrinkle in the [TS]

00:04:11   middle movie we learned that Vader is [TS]

00:04:13   Luke's father and this is the seed of [TS]

00:04:15   prequels so the prequels are not more [TS]

00:04:18   adventures in the star wars universe or [TS]

00:04:19   tiny started seed that no one wanted to [TS]

00:04:22   see go in the first place and it's not [TS]

00:04:24   like learning about you know minor [TS]

00:04:26   characters or whatever the seat of the [TS]

00:04:28   prequels is the is the fact Vader is [TS]

00:04:30   Luke's father right so the Star Wars [TS]

00:04:32   prequels I see them have one job explain [TS]

00:04:35   how the good man who was Luke's father [TS]

00:04:36   became Darth Vader that's that's the [TS]

00:04:38   reason these movies exist and I know if [TS]

00:04:41   we're going to do episode 2 & 3 [TS]

00:04:42   God please let's not i was right but [TS]

00:04:45   either way I want to make one [TS]

00:04:47   overarching point before we begin this [TS]

00:04:50   accurately here we have been doing here [TS]

00:04:52   yeah forget for a moment about the [TS]

00:04:55   terrible script bad acting Jar Jar Binks [TS]

00:04:57   all that stuff the greatest sin of the [TS]

00:04:59   Star Wars prequels is that they failed [TS]

00:05:01   to provide a compelling rationale story [TS]

00:05:03   of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth [TS]

00:05:05   Vader i'm sure we'll talk about all the [TS]

00:05:06   other problems in the rest of this [TS]

00:05:08   episode here but above and beyond all of [TS]

00:05:11   that is this essential truth I the [TS]

00:05:13   prequels had one job to do as far as I'm [TS]

00:05:15   concerned and they blew it and they [TS]

00:05:17   didn't just blow it they're blue in a [TS]

00:05:18   spectacular fashion and I presume that [TS]

00:05:20   is what we will talk about for the rest [TS]

00:05:22   of this episode I i will go ahead as an [TS]

00:05:24   addendum to Jones excellent excellent [TS]

00:05:26   allowing which which I agree with [TS]

00:05:28   wholeheartedly is that more than that [TS]

00:05:30   because they failed so protected this [TS]

00:05:33   job [TS]

00:05:34   they also kind of to a certain extent [TS]

00:05:36   compromise the original trilogy in that [TS]

00:05:38   their existence reveals something that [TS]

00:05:40   is considered you know a major plot [TS]

00:05:43   twist of the original trilogy which to [TS]

00:05:46   me is problematic because how do you [TS]

00:05:48   deal with the fact that you go into [TS]

00:05:50   these like if you watch them in the [TS]

00:05:52   supposed order starting episode 1 and [TS]

00:05:55   moving forward the ending of empire is [TS]

00:05:57   basically is spoiled and and as one of [TS]

00:06:00   the great moments of the original [TS]

00:06:03   trilogy that that i find i find [TS]

00:06:05   unforgivable empires not that good [TS]

00:06:07   anyway but that's not this room's fault [TS]

00:06:09   that's a different movies fault is it [TS]

00:06:11   that this is the first movie leading up [TS]

00:06:14   to it i will say there is a way to get [TS]

00:06:16   around that which is the only way i can [TS]

00:06:18   conceivably consider watching the Star [TS]

00:06:20   Wars prequels which is machete order [TS]

00:06:22   which i'm sure we'll talk about later [TS]

00:06:23   but still my main problem with this [TS]

00:06:27   movie in [TS]

00:06:29   earlier is that the person with the most [TS]

00:06:31   fleshed-out character uh who has the [TS]

00:06:36   most interesting dialogue back and forth [TS]

00:06:39   and dialogue exchange Richard future is [TS]

00:06:42   well [TS]

00:06:43   r2d2 Archie takes a close second he has [TS]

00:06:46   a hot scene with Pompey too well that's [TS]

00:06:48   the thing [TS]

00:06:49   alright so r2d2 can't actually speak in [TS]

00:06:52   words or at least we get to make up [TS]

00:06:54   whatever he's saying yeah so he [TS]

00:06:56   automatically has carlines yeah yeah [TS]

00:06:58   always filthy everything he says little [TS]

00:07:02   he's a droid what do you expect he's [TS]

00:07:04   mirroring what I'm thinking as I'm [TS]

00:07:06   watching the film yes but no it's it's [TS]

00:07:09   the slave parts dealer it's Watteau [TS]

00:07:12   water was the only person who's a good [TS]

00:07:14   3d character in this movie and he's not [TS]

00:07:17   even three you know the only part of him [TS]

00:07:19   that's technically 3d is the CGI that [TS]

00:07:22   made him and yet he is the most [TS]

00:07:24   compelling character in this movie this [TS]

00:07:26   is a movie that has liam neeson and ewan [TS]

00:07:28   mcgregor in it and the most compelling [TS]

00:07:29   character is a cgi winged thing that's [TS]

00:07:35   not our tutor and rgtu well r2 d2 is [TS]

00:07:38   awesome [TS]

00:07:38   regardless he wins the world whatever [TS]

00:07:42   alright thank you any other opening [TS]

00:07:44   statements before I call my first [TS]

00:07:46   witness there are reasons that these [TS]

00:07:50   movies exist other than to make a profit [TS]

00:07:52   I realize that's a goal of every movie [TS]

00:07:54   that's made but this movie came in with [TS]

00:07:57   enormous cultural expectations and they [TS]

00:08:00   didn't even attempt to fulfill them by [TS]

00:08:02   including any art you know John talks [TS]

00:08:04   about the goal of the movie that the [TS]

00:08:06   thematic endpoint that they were [TS]

00:08:09   supposedly shooting for but it was just [TS]

00:08:12   time to make more money right well night [TS]

00:08:15   because I think there was that that seed [TS]

00:08:17   of the movie is like like this that the [TS]

00:08:19   Star Wars movies make a nice whole story [TS]

00:08:21   and there's just one little thing left [TS]

00:08:22   you like oh yeah but like but what about [TS]

00:08:25   later yeah i know i saw the whole story [TS]

00:08:26   so I had ended and everything but like [TS]

00:08:27   what what about how did you get to be [TS]

00:08:29   that guy because I heard in the first [TS]

00:08:30   one that he was a good guy anybody in [TS]

00:08:31   this bag that is like the only untied up [TS]

00:08:34   loose ends and if you really need a star [TS]

00:08:35   was like yeah I bet that's an [TS]

00:08:37   interesting story turned out but yeah [TS]

00:08:39   like so that's one of those interesting [TS]

00:08:41   stories loose [TS]

00:08:42   is that you don't want to explain no I [TS]

00:08:44   like you you can splatter if you can [TS]

00:08:46   come up with your own solution on that [TS]

00:08:47   one you can explain it with a good story [TS]

00:08:49   isn't there could've been another good [TS]

00:08:51   story there [TS]

00:08:52   I I groove John I'm either wasn't but i [TS]

00:08:54   think i think you know the idea of [TS]

00:08:56   having I think that I willing to give [TS]

00:08:58   Lucas the benefit of the doubt in that [TS]

00:09:00   he intended well when he set out on this [TS]

00:09:02   journey but he just massively failed in [TS]

00:09:05   the execution of what you again i don't [TS]

00:09:07   think it was like a money-grab like it's [TS]

00:09:08   not like oh well actually we already had [TS]

00:09:10   more money than completely [TS]

00:09:11   self-contained story and there's no [TS]

00:09:13   reason for it there was a reason it's [TS]

00:09:15   not like he had 20 G's well we we just [TS]

00:09:16   wrapped up everything and there's [TS]

00:09:18   nothing i'll have to invent all new [TS]

00:09:19   characters you didn't you didn't need [TS]

00:09:21   the middle because you had Anakin he [TS]

00:09:23   deserved busy you know [TS]

00:09:25   and in fact there's a failure we can go [TS]

00:09:26   into not inventing more people i know [TS]

00:09:28   what I'm saying like it's not as if it's [TS]

00:09:30   not as if there without they're gonna we [TS]

00:09:31   really need to make some new Star Wars [TS]

00:09:33   movies but there's really nothing more [TS]

00:09:34   site now they're totally was like i mean [TS]

00:09:35   i think the the three after like the [TS]

00:09:38   original nine plan or whatever like the [TS]

00:09:40   three after you could argue boy then [TS]

00:09:42   what are you going to say but for the [TS]

00:09:43   prequels there was a reason for them to [TS]

00:09:45   exist and I think that's why everyone [TS]

00:09:46   was so excited about them because you [TS]

00:09:47   there there wasn't like this reputation [TS]

00:09:49   of like oh my God we're going to be [TS]

00:09:51   about of course they were going to be [TS]

00:09:52   about you know Anakin Vader thing [TS]

00:09:54   yeah everybody wanted to see obi-wan [TS]

00:09:56   teaching Anakin because we'd heard about [TS]

00:09:59   it for so long and it's the clone wars [TS]

00:10:01   got to mention you could do it like [TS]

00:10:03   that's open but that's that's called you [TS]

00:10:05   mean that's part of the backstory of the [TS]

00:10:06   of the true trilogy is it's it's it's [TS]

00:10:10   the the fleshing out that you don't want [TS]

00:10:12   detailed it didn't in the detailing it [TS]

00:10:14   ruins it was a totally unnecessary [TS]

00:10:17   venture [TS]

00:10:17   well there is definitely detailing the [TS]

00:10:19   ruins this i mean i think we can all [TS]

00:10:21   will get to the midi-chlorian part later [TS]

00:10:22   and I think we all we all agree that [TS]

00:10:24   that there is detailing their the ruins [TS]

00:10:25   it [TS]

00:10:26   I i don't think that necessarily just by [TS]

00:10:28   the idea of wanting to see this lead [TS]

00:10:31   necessarily its existence of ruins it I [TS]

00:10:33   still maintain that there's a good story [TS]

00:10:35   they could be told here but the the way [TS]

00:10:37   it was told was really bad i mean i [TS]

00:10:38   think i think it's to me it's [TS]

00:10:40   interesting to see we have a character [TS]

00:10:41   like obi-wan it has this hubris and [TS]

00:10:43   realizes that he has screwed up and try [TS]

00:10:46   to train this guy who was not capable of [TS]

00:10:47   training and it is interesting to us to [TS]

00:10:50   see this guy who has become the mentor [TS]

00:10:52   to his son like well okay how did that [TS]

00:10:54   happen [TS]

00:10:54   how did he screw up so badly like wasn't [TS]

00:10:56   really his fault I mean and how did this [TS]

00:10:59   person who is you know supposedly [TS]

00:11:00   there's a whole you know the father [TS]

00:11:02   issues in 7.2 how do our fathers we look [TS]

00:11:05   up to in many ways end up failing us and [TS]

00:11:08   and failing themselves and I think there [TS]

00:11:10   is an interesting theme in that if the [TS]

00:11:11   motivation was to tell that story [TS]

00:11:13   why didn't they even make a glance and [TS]

00:11:15   lets the question is what is why it [TS]

00:11:19   doesn't you know it doesn't work because [TS]

00:11:20   you've already seen it there have been [TS]

00:11:22   good prequels and Lucas thought he was [TS]

00:11:24   making one he's not a good storyteller [TS]

00:11:26   even if you just want a pic like that [TS]

00:11:27   like godfather part two where they're [TS]

00:11:29   like oh do we really need to see the [TS]

00:11:31   backstory the guy who died in the first [TS]

00:11:32   Godfather yeah if you do it well it's [TS]

00:11:34   good you know what can I don't think the [TS]

00:11:36   four star wars i don't think there's any [TS]

00:11:38   way that they could have possibly made [TS]

00:11:39   this story that would not have [TS]

00:11:41   disappointed 9400 i think i think you're [TS]

00:11:44   right i think that's probably true but [TS]

00:11:46   but but they managed to disappoint a [TS]

00:11:48   hundred percent which is a pre-action [TS]

00:11:50   exactly i I don't think feeling in the [TS]

00:11:52   back story fundamentally means that [TS]

00:11:54   you're going to ruin everything I i [TS]

00:11:57   think that it and this could be an epic [TS]

00:12:00   failure analysis if we wanted to go into [TS]

00:12:02   their but you know for me I look at this [TS]

00:12:04   and I think we'll first off this is a [TS]

00:12:07   something conceived as three movies and [TS]

00:12:09   the first movie kind of doesn't need to [TS]

00:12:11   exist in a lot of ways in every way that [TS]

00:12:13   the character of a mannequin in this [TS]

00:12:15   movie is an important you know the stuff [TS]

00:12:17   in star wars that always fascinated me [TS]

00:12:20   about the back story was about you know [TS]

00:12:22   a yorkie i was teaching i was training [TS]

00:12:24   your father and he was a great pilot and [TS]

00:12:26   then we find out in the Indian empire [TS]

00:12:28   strikes back that he became Darth Vader [TS]

00:12:30   and that story is really interesting [TS]

00:12:31   we don't get that story in episode one [TS]

00:12:33   we get the story of this little kid this [TS]

00:12:36   little little kid who apparently is a [TS]

00:12:39   prodigy and he and there's this other [TS]

00:12:42   guy who is an obi-wan who meets him and [TS]

00:12:45   it you know it's not the story you know [TS]

00:12:47   at all that's the stem is example we [TS]

00:12:49   were promised and not in a good way it's [TS]

00:12:51   sort of like why did why does this movie [TS]

00:12:53   even exist it you know a and it sets up [TS]

00:12:57   and then it sets up things that they [TS]

00:12:59   can't deliver on in other movies that's [TS]

00:13:01   for me that's the feeling of this movie [TS]

00:13:03   isnot that this movie was trying to do [TS]

00:13:04   an unwinnable task i think i think it [TS]

00:13:07   just it [TS]

00:13:08   is misconceived and I think miss slotted [TS]

00:13:12   in the in as episode 1 of a [TS]

00:13:14   three-episode arc because they had [TS]

00:13:16   already numbered the other ones and so [TS]

00:13:19   they had to do it this way and 10 G's [TS]

00:13:21   what are we going to do in the first [TS]

00:13:22   movie well he'll be a little kid well [TS]

00:13:24   it's not very interesting you know one [TS]

00:13:26   of the things about this movie that that [TS]

00:13:28   Star Wars has that this movie doesn't is [TS]

00:13:30   the backstory tell me anything about [TS]

00:13:32   qui-gon that happened before the first [TS]

00:13:35   he had a beard he grew a beard anything [TS]

00:13:37   he wants to grow a beard grew his secret [TS]

00:13:40   is a long about the light saver he was [TS]

00:13:42   stuck with obi-wan against his will [TS]

00:13:44   there is no you did you know what the [TS]

00:13:45   backstory is the backstories the crawler [TS]

00:13:47   experiencing the Trade Federation [TS]

00:13:48   dispute to worst worst Carla Yankee you [TS]

00:13:52   know you're in for a treat when the word [TS]

00:13:54   taxation appears in the first paragraph [TS]

00:13:56   don't think that's cool then and then [TS]

00:13:58   shipping turns up in the second [TS]

00:13:59   paragraph the first 20 seconds of this [TS]

00:14:02   movie you're perfect it's got the [TS]

00:14:03   Lucasfilm logo it's got the the [TS]

00:14:05   beginning of the music and it's got star [TS]

00:14:07   wars fading into a star field and that [TS]

00:14:09   if it's all downhill from there write it [TS]

00:14:10   right up to the point where you see the [TS]

00:14:12   fifth episode 1 the fence and then it's [TS]

00:14:13   okay we're good and then it's just down [TS]

00:14:15   know the thing for me that I really gave [TS]

00:14:17   me the the whole tremendous suction is [TS]

00:14:19   gonna get going i agree with that but [TS]

00:14:21   we've all we've all come to terms with [TS]

00:14:22   that to a certain extent but for me it [TS]

00:14:24   was the moment I really love to the [TS]

00:14:26   teaser for that first put out which has [TS]

00:14:28   the Anakin introduces a shader [TS]

00:14:30   silhouette and like oh yeah that's kind [TS]

00:14:33   of subtle that's kinda cool i like that [TS]

00:14:34   idea like that seems cool let's go with [TS]

00:14:36   dad what that's going to be about that [TS]

00:14:38   that is not in the movie but not even [TS]

00:14:40   really addressed the final bit of [TS]

00:14:41   subtlety this is this movie is sure to [TS]

00:14:43   be a nuanced where where is he where is [TS]

00:14:45   this kid where's the darkness in this [TS]

00:14:47   kid at all [TS]

00:14:48   he's angry he misses his mom does say [TS]

00:14:51   you pee a lot which really just gets [TS]

00:14:53   gets the bottom of your soul and scrapes [TS]

00:14:56   it out [TS]

00:14:58   before before we talk about the the [TS]

00:15:00   excellent excellent and yes you did [TS]

00:15:03   thank goodness we got that out of the [TS]

00:15:04   way I wanted before I want to talk about [TS]

00:15:07   anticipation for a minute just to [TS]

00:15:08   explore this with everybody [TS]

00:15:10   this movie was so incredibly hyped to [TS]

00:15:15   the point where i remember very [TS]

00:15:17   distinctly the 60 Minutes interview with [TS]

00:15:20   with George Lucas I don't remember if [TS]

00:15:21   you get i don't know if you guys [TS]

00:15:22   remember that but that where where steve [TS]

00:15:25   Kroft or somebody like breathlessly [TS]

00:15:26   followed him around on the set and in [TS]

00:15:28   Tunisia and things like that and I mean [TS]

00:15:30   literally people were saying this is [TS]

00:15:33   gonna be one of the greatest movies ever [TS]

00:15:34   oh my god Star Wars back and now they've [TS]

00:15:36   got all this new technology and it's [TS]

00:15:37   gonna be so great [TS]

00:15:38   oh my god it's gonna be so amazing like [TS]

00:15:40   amazing amazing like I remember articles [TS]

00:15:43   saying it's going to be up for best [TS]

00:15:46   picture i kid you not so so I'm curious [TS]

00:15:50   what you guys all have in terms of your [TS]

00:15:53   memory of anticipating this movie maybe [TS]

00:15:57   it was jinxed I i can tell you i mean i [TS]

00:16:01   remember reading about it i was in [TS]

00:16:03   rochester which is where my my mom's [TS]

00:16:05   family lives for like Christmas or [TS]

00:16:06   something and I remember buying a copy [TS]

00:16:08   of the like there's a star wars magazine [TS]

00:16:11   like a fan magazine or something like a [TS]

00:16:13   science-fiction book shop and I remember [TS]

00:16:14   opening it up and reading the casting [TS]

00:16:16   information because i remember seeing [TS]

00:16:17   Natalie Portman was casted I didn't [TS]

00:16:19   really know who she was that point [TS]

00:16:20   because that was what like 1997 probably [TS]

00:16:22   again so young but he was 12 years old [TS]

00:16:25   17 thank you very much [TS]

00:16:27   dan can you can you imagine life before [TS]

00:16:28   you-know-who natalie portman within the [TS]

00:16:31   professional well I hadn't seen the [TS]

00:16:33   professional because i was only said no [TS]

00:16:35   that is that is a frightening time for [TS]

00:16:36   their kids born today that don't fit [TS]

00:16:38   they'll never know world without Natalie [TS]

00:16:40   Portman and i say that is that weird [TS]

00:16:42   I mean that's awesome I kind of envy [TS]

00:16:44   them but i remember reading about it and [TS]

00:16:46   thinking like I don't you know I I the [TS]

00:16:49   thing for me that resume the most was [TS]

00:16:50   talking to one of my cousin's who's a [TS]

00:16:52   bit older than me and her story of [TS]

00:16:54   remembering she thought she was gonna [TS]

00:16:56   die before return of the jedi came out [TS]

00:16:58   to leverage because he was like a [TS]

00:16:59   teenager when an empire came out and she [TS]

00:17:01   was like oh my god Han Solo stuck in [TS]

00:17:03   carbonite and what's gonna happen and [TS]

00:17:05   everything like and I just remember [TS]

00:17:06   thinking like I you know I will never [TS]

00:17:08   see a Star Wars movie that comes out [TS]

00:17:10   again in my life [TS]

00:17:11   time because it's done it's over you [TS]

00:17:13   know the best I could hope for was [TS]

00:17:14   reading those timothy zahn books and the [TS]

00:17:16   other books that came after them and [TS]

00:17:17   believe me I read all of them and so the [TS]

00:17:19   idea that there would be new movies in [TS]

00:17:20   my lifetime I mean I had seen the rear [TS]

00:17:22   releases and at that time because you [TS]

00:17:24   know 97 was around the time that they [TS]

00:17:26   released the original trilogy with the [TS]

00:17:27   special editions and at that time being [TS]

00:17:30   a untutored unwise seventeen-year-old I [TS]

00:17:33   thought that's pretty cool some of these [TS]

00:17:34   effects are kind of cool and so I still [TS]

00:17:36   have that hope and I think I you know I [TS]

00:17:38   managed to maintain it and and ride that [TS]

00:17:42   wave right up until about actually you [TS]

00:17:45   know it went through the first showing I [TS]

00:17:46   gotta admit because my story about this [TS]

00:17:48   is that i went to a midnight showing [TS]

00:17:49   with a bunch of friends and we then went [TS]

00:17:52   out afterwards at like two or three [TS]

00:17:54   o'clock in the morning and spent an hour [TS]

00:17:57   talking about the movie and dissecting [TS]

00:17:59   it and then slept for like two hours and [TS]

00:18:01   then got up and went back to the movie [TS]

00:18:03   theater and saw it again and it must [TS]

00:18:05   have taken at least you know I don't [TS]

00:18:07   know a week or two before it's really [TS]

00:18:09   started to set in because like you kind [TS]

00:18:10   of had the suspicions after watching it [TS]

00:18:12   like huh yeah yeah maybe that wasn't so [TS]

00:18:16   good but there's a sort of Stockholm [TS]

00:18:17   Syndrome the kicked in and I was like [TS]

00:18:18   not Star Wars got to be good [TS]

00:18:20   we're probably just understanding it [TS]

00:18:22   wrong you've already talked yourself [TS]

00:18:23   into letting all those books I like some [TS]

00:18:25   of those books you're fundamentally [TS]

00:18:28   broken in some way so when can i [TS]

00:18:30   transfer that to the movie [TS]

00:18:31   thanks i remember i didn't see it until [TS]

00:18:33   the monday after it came out and by that [TS]

00:18:35   point every person i work with or no had [TS]

00:18:39   seen it at least once and most of them [TS]

00:18:40   two or three times you couldn't help it [TS]

00:18:44   the wave of excitement just pushed [TS]

00:18:47   everybody into it [TS]

00:18:48   yeah I i see it is like an continuous [TS]

00:18:51   continuous weight from the end of Jedi [TS]

00:18:53   like I I picture that as like there's a [TS]

00:18:56   little part of my brain that is waiting [TS]

00:18:58   on line like it's not a Jedi and goes [TS]

00:19:00   boy I you know and then says okay well [TS]

00:19:02   you sit here and get in line and then [TS]

00:19:05   and then how many years later was that I [TS]

00:19:07   don't know it was a lot of years like [TS]

00:19:08   the same look with the release of you [TS]

00:19:10   know the original trilogy into theaters [TS]

00:19:13   with even though they were the special [TS]

00:19:14   editions and everything like that i was [TS]

00:19:17   online take to be first in line to watch [TS]

00:19:19   those like that's you know that that [TS]

00:19:22   excitement that that marketing campaign [TS]

00:19:23   really seen the original [TS]

00:19:24   so the special edition despite like the [TS]

00:19:26   new effects which I didn't like was [TS]

00:19:27   really anti the new effects after i saw [TS]

00:19:29   them and everything but it didn't matter [TS]

00:19:30   i could see stars in the movie theater [TS]

00:19:31   again and last time i had done that was [TS]

00:19:33   you know it was Jedi and so it was just [TS]

00:19:35   this incredible multi-year long wait [TS]

00:19:39   like this is what my life has been [TS]

00:19:40   leading up to it was like your kid you [TS]

00:19:43   see Star Wars and then you wait and wait [TS]

00:19:45   and wait and wait and wait and [TS]

00:19:47   eventually finally this thing comes in [TS]

00:19:49   when I when I put the stand movie in and [TS]

00:19:51   watched it and like the the fanfare came [TS]

00:19:55   up and the scroll and everything I had [TS]

00:19:58   it was like it was like seeing movies of [TS]

00:20:00   a car accident after being in a car [TS]

00:20:02   accident I had that right like that [TS]

00:20:04   feels i knew how that you have no idea [TS]

00:20:06   how excited I was and it all came back [TS]

00:20:08   to me is like PTSD is like i was i was [TS]

00:20:10   the most amped-up I've ever been in a [TS]

00:20:12   movie theater more amped up than I was [TS]

00:20:13   when I saw the original trilogy because [TS]

00:20:14   then you know your kid you like Oh what [TS]

00:20:16   do you know maybe the beginning of Jedi [TS]

00:20:17   was a little bit close to this crazy but [TS]

00:20:19   I was like this is it like I've been [TS]

00:20:21   waiting my whole life for this thing and [TS]

00:20:23   yet and it's just I like they brought me [TS]

00:20:28   back to that moment like that moment [TS]

00:20:29   when the car hits you know you like I [TS]

00:20:32   know you don't you know what's gonna [TS]

00:20:33   hide it I didn't end of things I didn't [TS]

00:20:36   think it would affect me in that way [TS]

00:20:37   re seeing the movie like I thought I had [TS]

00:20:39   moved on and then past or whatever but [TS]

00:20:41   now it's like it because that you know [TS]

00:20:43   that fanfare and that and that Lucasfilm [TS]

00:20:44   thing like I've seen the original [TS]

00:20:46   trilogy million times on you know on on [TS]

00:20:49   DVD and everything doesn't have the same [TS]

00:20:51   effect like it's just that this was so [TS]

00:20:53   don't you remember that time and i [TS]

00:20:54   believe i got to get tickets i was i was [TS]

00:20:56   up all night and slept outside for it [TS]

00:20:58   like it was it was a big thing and this [TS]

00:21:01   that i would hope that in my life [TS]

00:21:03   this will be the biggest letdown I've [TS]

00:21:05   ever had in my entire life was Star Wars [TS]

00:21:07   Episode what if we tell your children [TS]

00:21:08   grow up [TS]

00:21:09   uh-huh that's that's that's a good [TS]

00:21:13   possibility but for now i have [TS]

00:21:14   especially like it into I'm speaking for [TS]

00:21:16   my parents uh in terms of like art you [TS]

00:21:19   know what art is what what thing having [TS]

00:21:21   to do with entertainment & arts [TS]

00:21:22   disappointed you most in life that I [TS]

00:21:24   feel like this is going to be a champion [TS]

00:21:25   forever host prequel disappointment [TS]

00:21:27   disorder is the name of what you're [TS]

00:21:28   feeling [TS]

00:21:29   John yeah it's [TS]

00:21:33   episode one was such a weird thing for [TS]

00:21:35   me because i was i was young enough that [TS]

00:21:39   i must have seen it at least seven or [TS]

00:21:42   eight times in theaters before I [TS]

00:21:44   actually step back and went wait a [TS]

00:21:45   second and I will also say that seven or [TS]

00:21:48   eight times within the Union and like it [TS]

00:21:52   was you know about eclipse [TS]

00:21:55   it's a lot of population laps [TS]

00:21:58   oh my god a bad father oh no it's funny [TS]

00:22:04   though because the first you know the [TS]

00:22:06   earliest thing that I can remember [TS]

00:22:08   talking to people about on the internet [TS]

00:22:10   was star worse you know the first BBS [TS]

00:22:14   post i ever made in the first pen pal [TS]

00:22:16   letters I sent over like AOL were about [TS]

00:22:19   the Star Wars films and having them get [TS]

00:22:24   rereleased originally the original [TS]

00:22:26   film's get released in theaters in 97 [TS]

00:22:28   was a dream come true for me and my best [TS]

00:22:31   friend Leah because we were complete not [TS]

00:22:33   like we were taking cardboard boxes and [TS]

00:22:37   building x-wings out of them because we [TS]

00:22:39   were such like crazy crazy star wars [TS]

00:22:41   nuts so for for me to kind of be like [TS]

00:22:45   not all right so the original film's [TS]

00:22:47   didn't come out during my lifetime but [TS]

00:22:49   they're going to be new Star Wars movies [TS]

00:22:51   and these are gonna be my star wars [TS]

00:22:53   movies so great and you know so I like [TS]

00:22:59   do you like I was in Middle School I [TS]

00:23:02   know it's embarrassing i was in middle [TS]

00:23:04   school and I did not go to the midnight [TS]

00:23:06   showing for this one because i think i [TS]

00:23:08   was like 12 or 13 but i did my my father [TS]

00:23:12   got me out of school for the very first [TS]

00:23:15   date i'm showing he bought me a [TS]

00:23:17   lightsaber like a new fancy lightsaber [TS]

00:23:20   the head noises and we went to the [TS]

00:23:23   theater and I like waited in a super [TS]

00:23:26   long line and you know you just you get [TS]

00:23:29   so hyped up and you get so excited [TS]

00:23:31   you're like star wars star star star [TS]

00:23:32   stars and then you sent me watch it and [TS]

00:23:36   you're sad trombone but yeah what it was [TS]

00:23:39   it's weird it's kind of a shock right [TS]

00:23:41   and you see all the music and it's just [TS]

00:23:45   a to wean and it's got ships that are [TS]

00:23:48   familiar and it's got Jedi and it's a [TS]

00:23:50   lightsaber battle for the first time and [TS]

00:23:53   how long and all the trappings you're [TS]

00:23:55   like wow it is its star wars it's got [TS]

00:23:57   all the stuff that Star Wars has in it [TS]

00:23:59   and and so that you know and and we've [TS]

00:24:03   never seen more of that I mean that [TS]

00:24:04   there's that just moment i can't believe [TS]

00:24:06   i'm watching a new star wars movie that [TS]

00:24:08   that that was a powerful moment even if [TS]

00:24:12   in hindsight like damn said you were [TS]

00:24:14   like huh [TS]

00:24:15   taxation trade disputes it all the other [TS]

00:24:20   litany of things it was like but they [TS]

00:24:21   were still like lightsaber battles and [TS]

00:24:23   sith lords and Jedi and their there was [TS]

00:24:25   enough there's enough feeding that part [TS]

00:24:27   of you that you could stay amped for a [TS]

00:24:29   little while just on the residual buzz [TS]

00:24:31   from it until your until your conscious [TS]

00:24:33   intellectual brain starts taking over [TS]

00:24:35   yet [TS]

00:24:36   how long did that take incidentally take [TS]

00:24:38   me the first weekend because i was i was [TS]

00:24:40   convinced that I had to watch it again [TS]

00:24:42   like I'm like I must have missed [TS]

00:24:44   something I must be too young for some [TS]

00:24:45   of these references [TS]

00:24:46   yeah I didn't get a road it's me know [TS]

00:24:49   you totally you blaming you like it's me [TS]

00:24:51   not you [TS]

00:24:52   what's going on it's it's it's Star Wars [TS]

00:24:54   made by ironically somebody who doesn't [TS]

00:24:56   understand what's good about study and [TS]

00:24:58   never absolutely [TS]

00:25:00   you're absolutely right any one of the [TS]

00:25:02   things I wanted to talk about and it [TS]

00:25:04   came up on Twitter when we were all [TS]

00:25:05   watching this movie so many of us watch [TS]

00:25:07   this on sunday and where were tweeting [TS]

00:25:09   because you've got to let the pain out [TS]

00:25:10   somewhere so use twitter for that [TS]

00:25:12   and somebody made the point about you [TS]

00:25:16   know it's a movie for kids and kids like [TS]

00:25:18   it and just like the originals were four [TS]

00:25:20   kids and now we're all adults and we [TS]

00:25:21   have hazy water-colored but what do we [TS]

00:25:24   know about kids just little kids have [TS]

00:25:25   bad taste [TS]

00:25:26   they're all idiots you got it but here's [TS]

00:25:29   the thing is good kids movies are [TS]

00:25:31   appreciated also by adults and what I [TS]

00:25:33   look at these movies I and I think about [TS]

00:25:35   George Lucas saying hey the kids love [TS]

00:25:37   him I made them for kids i look at it [TS]

00:25:38   and I think you missed the point of why [TS]

00:25:40   the old movies work because they weren't [TS]

00:25:42   pandering to kids kids love them but so [TS]

00:25:45   did their parents and so did [TS]

00:25:46   twenty-year-olds they will have whatever [TS]

00:25:48   he says they weren't kids movies they [TS]

00:25:50   were aimed at adults and they had [TS]

00:25:52   elements that kids enjoyed but they were [TS]

00:25:54   not were kids there were not six months [TS]

00:25:56   to a movie is definitely not a kids [TS]

00:25:58   movie [TS]

00:25:58   yeah there's a difference between kids [TS]

00:26:00   movies and being sophomoric I mean they [TS]

00:26:01   had the heady a had a child like level [TS]

00:26:04   of sophistication children's material is [TS]

00:26:06   more sophisticated in this movie like a [TS]

00:26:08   like if you want to put look at this in [TS]

00:26:10   the moving pieces in this movie and I [TS]

00:26:11   was shocked by this rewatching it like I [TS]

00:26:14   went into it thinking surely there will [TS]

00:26:16   be some aspects of this movie that are [TS]

00:26:17   competently done like they won't be [TS]

00:26:19   parts that matter and it won't save the [TS]

00:26:21   movie but surely i'll go and say you [TS]

00:26:22   know what that part of the movie was [TS]

00:26:24   reasonable filmmaking but this just [TS]

00:26:26   wasn't friendly just basic like I mean [TS]

00:26:30   maybe we'll go into this in more detail [TS]

00:26:32   with a certain section but like it just [TS]

00:26:34   execution-wise Sesame Street is better [TS]

00:26:37   any children's program made things for [TS]

00:26:39   infants are better in terms of execution [TS]

00:26:41   not saying like material i could see not [TS]

00:26:42   only babies goes but it's like there's a [TS]

00:26:44   certain level execution that you bring [TS]

00:26:46   to whatever it is that you're doing what [TS]

00:26:47   about what descriptive know what [TS]

00:26:49   anything is [TS]

00:26:50   you know just simply execute and do a [TS]

00:26:52   good job and what you to end this [TS]

00:26:54   well okay let's talk about that though [TS]

00:26:55   the sound of the movie the score is [TS]

00:26:58   excellent the sound effects are okay [TS]

00:27:00   before we before we get into the Oscars [TS]

00:27:02   that are awarded like before the Oscar [TS]

00:27:04   show starts [TS]

00:27:06   I don't see this movie and 14 years and [TS]

00:27:08   i was astonished at how bad the writing [TS]

00:27:11   and acting work across and worldly [TS]

00:27:14   girlfriend don't write their problem [TS]

00:27:16   with this movie is it is a movie with no [TS]

00:27:18   soul [TS]

00:27:19   it is a music it is a movie that has [TS]

00:27:21   some beautiful music some beautiful [TS]

00:27:23   sound effects and beautiful visual [TS]

00:27:24   effects but ultimately the failure is on [TS]

00:27:27   the writer and the director both legs [TS]

00:27:29   and booty [TS]

00:27:30   yeah but they happen to be George Lucas [TS]

00:27:32   but it's so obvious especially if you [TS]

00:27:34   watch the prequels hand-in-hand with the [TS]

00:27:38   original trilogy you look at the banter [TS]

00:27:40   between characters you look at the [TS]

00:27:43   flushed you know the the backgrounds of [TS]

00:27:45   characters even just their tone of voice [TS]

00:27:47   there is all hardly line in this movie [TS]

00:27:49   that's not delivered in a flat monotone [TS]

00:27:51   yeah i was thinking back to our radio [TS]

00:27:53   play episode when I was watching this [TS]

00:27:54   and I'm like that render would not let [TS]

00:27:57   us get away with line readings like this [TS]

00:27:59   and we are not actors and we have a [TS]

00:28:02   budget of zero dollars and yet i was [TS]

00:28:03   thinking particularly of the many many [TS]

00:28:05   places in the scripture i imagine as an [TS]

00:28:06   em dash after someone's dialogue in [TS]

00:28:08   another person interrupts them and they [TS]

00:28:10   were couples in our radio play script [TS]

00:28:12   with any style i realize it's your areas [TS]

00:28:15   is it rocket science to do those right [TS]

00:28:17   like you know I don't think you need to [TS]

00:28:19   be well there's two possibilities either [TS]

00:28:21   Lucas didn't care or he thought the [TS]

00:28:24   readings were just dandy [TS]

00:28:26   yeah and my best guess is that he just [TS]

00:28:27   he doesn't know how people actually and [TS]

00:28:29   sometimes they're doing [TS]

00:28:30   sometimes they're good actors like [TS]

00:28:31   Natalie department has lines and you [TS]

00:28:33   know she's a good actor but she does a [TS]

00:28:35   reading where she's just like you just [TS]

00:28:37   came out of a trailer and you just woke [TS]

00:28:38   up or something from a nap and she read [TS]

00:28:40   the line and it's terrible and that's [TS]

00:28:41   the one they go with I actually think [TS]

00:28:43   it's worse than that John might also so [TS]

00:28:44   i watch this for my kids and and they [TS]

00:28:46   had some interesting observations as i [TS]

00:28:48   always do you know Darth Vader's office [TS]

00:28:49   is really weird [TS]

00:28:50   I've got some of those there are gems in [TS]

00:28:52   there James just wait but my wife came [TS]

00:28:55   in she was doing something and she walks [TS]

00:28:56   inches i go but this high think ya at [TS]

00:29:00   amegy an observation because it was some [TS]

00:29:03   scenes with natalie portman she said it [TS]

00:29:05   seems to me because knowing that she's a [TS]

00:29:07   good actress [TS]

00:29:08   it seems to me like she was told to be [TS]

00:29:11   flat that she was actually instructed [TS]

00:29:13   yes don't yell vote be boring and it's [TS]

00:29:17   baffling why you would do [TS]

00:29:19   that other than to maybe get get closer [TS]

00:29:22   to the the flatness of the the little [TS]

00:29:24   boy you're acting against because [TS]

00:29:26   otherwise you'll blow them out of the [TS]

00:29:27   water but it's amazing and essentially [TS]

00:29:29   you gotta be glad that she did go that [TS]

00:29:31   route because that is our one and only [TS]

00:29:33   character trait if you were to ask what [TS]

00:29:36   what do you know about Queen Amidala [TS]

00:29:37   that's the one thing you would say she's [TS]

00:29:39   monotone she's not always monotone [TS]

00:29:42   though she's more monotone as the queen [TS]

00:29:44   she is the handmaiden that's because she [TS]

00:29:46   is overall can clearly well yeah there [TS]

00:29:49   they modulate her voice you talk about [TS]

00:29:51   the characters even if you just went [TS]

00:29:53   with the words on the page if Natalie [TS]

00:29:55   Portman was able to give it you know a [TS]

00:29:58   good reading and and show some feeling [TS]

00:30:02   even with nothing else you would get the [TS]

00:30:04   sense that there might be a human being [TS]

00:30:06   there but even that is not there like [TS]

00:30:09   it's not just that the dialogue doesn't [TS]

00:30:11   let you know anything about who she is [TS]

00:30:13   it's that anything that human might [TS]

00:30:15   insert to make it seem more like a an [TS]

00:30:18   extra dimension is fled away and it's [TS]

00:30:21   just no no just read it flat just be as [TS]

00:30:23   dull as flat as possible because you're [TS]

00:30:25   not an interesting character not the [TS]

00:30:27   parent of characters that people care [TS]

00:30:29   about or anything down the road you're [TS]

00:30:30   not gonna be boring and it's everybody's [TS]

00:30:34   just as natalie portman it's everybody [TS]

00:30:37   yeah we've seen her act so it's weird [TS]

00:30:38   the interesting thing that I noticed [TS]

00:30:40   while we watching this movie the latest [TS]

00:30:42   time and I was looking for at this time [TS]

00:30:44   everybody [TS]

00:30:46   there's a there's a thing in directing [TS]

00:30:48   right where when you're starting out as [TS]

00:30:51   a director the one thing that you are [TS]

00:30:53   told is try and avoid give younger [TS]

00:30:56   actors line readings when you can [TS]

00:30:58   obviously sometimes it needs to happen [TS]

00:31:00   but for the majority of the time you [TS]

00:31:04   shouldn't give your actors line readings [TS]

00:31:05   you should let them try and find it and [TS]

00:31:07   then tweak individual words individual [TS]

00:31:09   sentences whatever needs tweaking when [TS]

00:31:12   you watch this movie picture at all in [TS]

00:31:15   George Lucas's voice and all of a sudden [TS]

00:31:17   everything makes gifts complete sense in [TS]

00:31:20   terms of the directing choices [TS]

00:31:21   basically what happened at least from my [TS]

00:31:23   perspective is that every single actor [TS]

00:31:27   was given repeated line readings Jake [TS]

00:31:30   Lloyd a lot of his dialogue is dubbed [TS]

00:31:33   like I mean still be it still him but [TS]

00:31:34   they basically went in did an ADR [TS]

00:31:36   session and had had him basically they [TS]

00:31:39   just dropped in pieces of lines over the [TS]

00:31:43   footage that they had already done and a [TS]

00:31:46   lot of this is just poor unfortunately [TS]

00:31:49   poor directing on Lucas's part it's not [TS]

00:31:51   even like there was there is a smidgen [TS]

00:31:54   of good actor and Jake Lloyd I'm not [TS]

00:31:56   afraid to say that uh but heat the way [TS]

00:31:58   he was directed on this set is pitiful [TS]

00:32:01   the way that all of the actors were [TS]

00:32:03   directed on this set is completely [TS]

00:32:04   horrifying they make Liam Neeson into a [TS]

00:32:08   completely boring characters your stock [TS]

00:32:11   stock wise you know he's so wise he's a [TS]

00:32:13   wise figure [TS]

00:32:14   oh I disagree I've i projected a whole [TS]

00:32:17   backstory and inner life for quite God [TS]

00:32:20   in my attempt to make this opening sense [TS]

00:32:22   but should you have have you want [TS]

00:32:24   anymore believe it's always it kind of [TS]

00:32:26   up to the filmmaker to do the heavy [TS]

00:32:28   lifting on that for you instead of her [TS]

00:32:29   you want to do if you want it easy on [TS]

00:32:32   you [TS]

00:32:33   guess i'm just lazy that's why I viewed [TS]

00:32:35   him as being kind of that stock mentor [TS]

00:32:36   figure is that then i have a backstory [TS]

00:32:38   that I could take off the shelf for him [TS]

00:32:39   but you said it before like why does [TS]

00:32:41   qui-gon exist why is he a character in [TS]

00:32:43   this movie [TS]

00:32:44   it sure as heck isn't because he's so [TS]

00:32:45   incredibly interesting that he just has [TS]

00:32:47   a story that had to be told in a [TS]

00:32:48   character we can be murdered [TS]

00:32:50   I propose that the entire movie is about [TS]

00:32:52   the relationship between obi-wan and [TS]

00:32:54   quite God and Anakin is exactly as [TS]

00:32:56   important as charged are well that may [TS]

00:32:58   be true but that's still miss executed [TS]

00:33:00   can I just say I know their relationship [TS]

00:33:02   is not going to their own what we want [TS]

00:33:03   is since the system the ship only one [TS]

00:33:05   needs to be the center of these [TS]

00:33:06   trilogies and he is not absolutely [TS]

00:33:08   because the the problem is i mean yes [TS]

00:33:10   you can make a movie with a character [TS]

00:33:13   with a protagonist who is if unlikable [TS]

00:33:15   and essentially you know eventually evil [TS]

00:33:18   you can do that i don't know if you can [TS]

00:33:20   make this kind of star wars epic [TS]

00:33:23   adventure doing that because i think [TS]

00:33:25   that isn't that strikes me as divergent [TS]

00:33:27   but if you have a character like obi-wan [TS]

00:33:29   who is from most intensive purposes a [TS]

00:33:32   good character if flawed [TS]

00:33:34   I mean there's nothing wrong with a flaw [TS]

00:33:35   i think the problem is you're asked [TS]

00:33:37   eventually to identify with a guy who [TS]

00:33:39   goes in like murders children right like [TS]

00:33:41   that's gonna be a hard sell especially [TS]

00:33:42   for a Star Wars movie which is supposed [TS]

00:33:44   to be kind of adventure movie right [TS]

00:33:46   so I I think that's part of the Miss on [TS]

00:33:48   this is that you know we're looking [TS]

00:33:50   through the one of the wrong lens and it [TS]

00:33:52   doesn't make sense for us to look [TS]

00:33:53   through the lens of Anakin because we [TS]

00:33:55   don't see him for the first half hour of [TS]

00:33:56   this movie we're not even looking [TS]

00:33:58   through the ends right well that's I [TS]

00:34:00   think the blanket reviews really hit the [TS]

00:34:01   nail on the head with this one in that [TS]

00:34:03   there really is no protagonist in this [TS]

00:34:05   film [TS]

00:34:05   yeah i mean that the ostensibly the [TS]

00:34:08   character should be the protagonist is [TS]

00:34:09   obi-wan but he's relegated to the [TS]

00:34:10   background for the first half of Anakin [TS]

00:34:13   doesn't even exist until then it [TS]

00:34:14   happened only one doesn't get tapped [TS]

00:34:16   until it's time for him to fight with my [TS]

00:34:17   drivers at the end the rest of the [TS]

00:34:18   movie- ones on the ship and even then [TS]

00:34:20   he's sitting out like a it says on the [TS]

00:34:22   ship piece like this feet up and watch [TS]

00:34:24   10tv on the ship it and and like a few [TS]

00:34:27   scenes he does he's he's such an [TS]

00:34:28   unlikable jerk and a few seems he [TS]

00:34:30   doesn't want us to pick up another [TS]

00:34:31   pathetic life-form that's got me going [TS]

00:34:33   out early i did not remember how much [TS]

00:34:35   the the jedis are going to school so my [TS]

00:34:39   I mean they got like the whole thing [TS]

00:34:42   without ok charge our banks is an awful [TS]

00:34:44   character we can all agree that but man [TS]

00:34:46   quite aunties and treat them like a [TS]

00:34:48   piece of crap like my conscience at [TS]

00:34:51   everything [TS]

00:34:52   oh my god like it's just it's these are [TS]

00:34:55   our moral guardians no wonder the [TS]

00:34:56   Republic fell into disarray and then he [TS]

00:34:58   steals a child from his mother he [TS]

00:35:01   doesn't make much of an effort to save [TS]

00:35:02   the mother is like mac and I'm not here [TS]

00:35:04   to rescue slaves he actually cheats to [TS]

00:35:07   make sure he doesn't save her [TS]

00:35:08   no we're not we're not here to free [TS]

00:35:09   slaves I'll just this one just this one [TS]

00:35:12   and then he tells the mom I'll watch out [TS]

00:35:15   for him and the first thing he does is [TS]

00:35:16   take him into an invasion stand over [TS]

00:35:19   there that there is absolutely no reason [TS]

00:35:20   for him to be it also tells the and [TS]

00:35:22   again I tried to save your mom and it's [TS]

00:35:24   like yeah very hard like I kind of tried [TS]

00:35:26   that I really you can make that work if [TS]

00:35:28   you decide like we're going to show the [TS]

00:35:29   jedis are arrogant out of touch but that [TS]

00:35:31   was so not communicated offhandedly [TS]

00:35:34   jerks that's an example you have to like [TS]

00:35:36   invent yourself and say well you could [TS]

00:35:37   be saying the Jedi were decadent and [TS]

00:35:39   arrogant or whatever but like it's so [TS]

00:35:40   not delivered in the movie like you were [TS]

00:35:42   then manufacturing your own movies just [TS]

00:35:43   it's just it's just missed a misfire [TS]

00:35:45   that you're looking for some reason for [TS]

00:35:47   like maybe that's what they were getting [TS]

00:35:48   up but now it's just it's just lazy [TS]

00:35:50   oh I don't think this is what they were [TS]

00:35:51   getting at but I have developed my own [TS]

00:35:53   would be about five no illusion that [TS]

00:35:56   it's on purpose yes [TS]

00:35:57   don't know you're right you're right I [TS]

00:35:59   this is a movie that makes us dream it's [TS]

00:36:02   a movie that makes us dream and imagine [TS]

00:36:04   a better movie i have some some tickets [TS]

00:36:08   thinking of line readings i have a [TS]

00:36:09   couple of particular lines because like [TS]

00:36:10   we're talking about you know that bad [TS]

00:36:12   ratings of dialogue but then if you look [TS]

00:36:13   at what's actually on the page there are [TS]

00:36:15   some some spectacular things in here [TS]

00:36:17   like invasion use this this script in [TS]

00:36:20   script writing courses to explain like [TS]

00:36:22   what not going to do to illustrate [TS]

00:36:24   principles like alright so it's a couple [TS]

00:36:26   lines I broke blind the lines down [TS]

00:36:28   verbatim contagious could not believe [TS]

00:36:29   they were these are in a movie I early [TS]

00:36:31   on [TS]

00:36:32   obi-wan says if they find us they will [TS]

00:36:33   crush us into tiny pieces and blast us [TS]

00:36:35   into oblivion [TS]

00:36:37   I think a five-year-old could write a [TS]

00:36:39   better line also it's badly rhythm you [TS]

00:36:41   know the the rhythm of that sentence is [TS]

00:36:43   awful [TS]

00:36:44   the fact is you can't say that it's just [TS]

00:36:46   it's just is just terrible you know we [TS]

00:36:48   got used in big dudu this time whatever [TS]

00:36:49   let's just get those is a fine give will [TS]

00:36:51   give charger an entire pass and just [TS]

00:36:52   look at other things like we should not [TS]

00:36:54   have made this bargain text and subtext [TS]

00:36:56   nope it's all text in this movie it is [TS]

00:36:57   all decks there is no subtext people [TS]

00:36:59   just say things that they're feeling no [TS]

00:37:00   i do not agree with the Jedi on this you [TS]

00:37:03   must trust my judgment that's it that's [TS]

00:37:04   what you got here it's like they are [TS]

00:37:06   riding their writing character [TS]

00:37:08   motivations out loud that's all those [TS]

00:37:10   are doing you know you're right i mean [TS]

00:37:12   there's also there's also no pretty much [TS]

00:37:15   no humor in this movie it definitely no [TS]

00:37:17   well executed there there are little of [TS]

00:37:19   glamorous very very little attempted at [TS]

00:37:21   least dialogue humor yeah there's an [TS]

00:37:23   attempt at visitor centers attempted [TS]

00:37:24   all-star comedy and slapstick what parts [TS]

00:37:27   are showing but like there's very little [TS]

00:37:30   in the way of wordplay or any sort of [TS]

00:37:33   banter as red was saying like there's [TS]

00:37:35   not much attempted in that I mean like [TS]

00:37:36   the closest thing I could think of is [TS]

00:37:37   there's always a bigger fish which in [TS]

00:37:40   itself is really a terribly actually do [TS]

00:37:42   you mind if it's another pathetic [TS]

00:37:43   creature line from obi-wan I think it's [TS]

00:37:45   about the the funniest thing ever but [TS]

00:37:48   they reveal send this to be a jerk yeah [TS]

00:37:50   I mean it doesn't it doesn't work but [TS]

00:37:52   you're looking a little slave boy we [TS]

00:37:53   just record you know rescue one pathetic [TS]

00:37:56   creature rescue / why I think the [TS]

00:37:59   podrace announcers are supposed to be [TS]

00:38:01   funny ecologies I mean the heart of [TS]

00:38:05   groups that's right right i mean because [TS]

00:38:07   what we needed was a sports announcer in [TS]

00:38:10   Star Wars true [TS]

00:38:11   groups is safe I'd people Brooks in the [TS]

00:38:14   Phantom Menace but you don't need funny [TS]

00:38:17   dialogue when you've got the stooge bots [TS]

00:38:19   and jar jar and and so no humans in this [TS]

00:38:22   movie talk like humans obviously like [TS]

00:38:24   they just they just speak out character [TS]

00:38:26   motivations and like like bullet points [TS]

00:38:28   if you didn't do an outline at last we [TS]

00:38:30   will have our revenge for what yeah [TS]

00:38:33   that's my least favorite line what is it [TS]

00:38:35   revenge for what are ya they make him [TS]

00:38:37   wear that just by being jerks know we [TS]

00:38:40   can be jerks instead i kinda want to [TS]

00:38:42   root for the fifth now jedi jedi need to [TS]

00:38:44   get tossed man they're a little bit [TS]

00:38:46   jerky the 1i the line i hate the most is [TS]

00:38:48   actually Anakin's are you a name [TS]

00:38:51   oh my god like that was foreshadowing [TS]

00:38:53   about the next seriously and I fight [TS]

00:38:54   know what I could pick up natalie [TS]

00:38:55   portman with that line that the line [TS]

00:38:59   that struck out to meet win and it is [TS]

00:39:01   ajar line and I apologize because that's [TS]

00:39:03   a real low bar but it's ex-squeeze me [TS]

00:39:05   oh he's quoting yes world anyway let's [TS]

00:39:09   be clear [TS]

00:39:10   waitrose actually a great way to put it [TS]

00:39:11   again yeah he doesn't say baking powder [TS]

00:39:13   so it he didn't even better [TS]

00:39:15   well I and to speak for the charger [TS]

00:39:17   thing again I know this is a low bar but [TS]

00:39:19   the thing for me is even if you take [TS]

00:39:20   away the ridiculous part of the line [TS]

00:39:23   readings a lot of his dialogue just [TS]

00:39:24   doesn't make any sense [TS]

00:39:26   it's incomprehensible see this is this [TS]

00:39:28   is the problem that i have with with it [TS]

00:39:30   when it comes to line readings and and [TS]

00:39:32   bad writing but most of the line [TS]

00:39:35   readings is that not just the flat [TS]

00:39:37   readings but the fact that the the [TS]

00:39:39   people that are responsible for all the [TS]

00:39:41   exposition and explaining the whole [TS]

00:39:42   Trade Federation plotline you can't [TS]

00:39:45   understand a word that they say mother [TS]

00:39:47   how are you racist apart from [TS]

00:39:49   potentially being you know potentially [TS]

00:39:50   being an offensive to a lot of people is [TS]

00:39:53   o course we're being sobar through ball [TS]

00:39:57   i kept thinking why don't they subtitled [TS]

00:39:59   you can't understand a third of what the [TS]

00:40:00   Gungan like a you like they say [TS]

00:40:02   subtitled water which i think is why [TS]

00:40:04   whoever was the water fan because it ran [TS]

00:40:06   was saying that water was you know the [TS]

00:40:08   only Greece can't be subtitled you get [TS]

00:40:10   the subtitle affected the very least why [TS]

00:40:11   not subtitled the whole Trade Federation [TS]

00:40:12   so we won't be spared that awful accent [TS]

00:40:15   and that terrible lip idea it was it was [TS]

00:40:17   hard for me to realize because I [TS]

00:40:18   remember people talking about it at the [TS]

00:40:20   time like you know the races elements [TS]

00:40:22   and potentially like and I remember [TS]

00:40:24   thinking [TS]

00:40:24   again there's the whole Stockholm [TS]

00:40:26   Syndrome like how its star wars stores [TS]

00:40:28   would be ready tonight like no no and [TS]

00:40:31   then watching it this time was just like [TS]

00:40:33   it was so something painful just because [TS]

00:40:36   it was so it was on that like John [TS]

00:40:38   saying it's unnecessary [TS]

00:40:39   why why would you do that cuz water got [TS]

00:40:41   subtitles so did so this job I have a [TS]

00:40:43   couple moments where I thought with the [TS]

00:40:44   Trade Federation that you know these [TS]

00:40:46   guys would be much more effective if [TS]

00:40:47   they were just people and they just [TS]

00:40:50   spoken regular voices and they were you [TS]

00:40:53   know bad guys yeah they were not cool [TS]

00:40:55   looking [TS]

00:40:55   they were not interesting there was you [TS]

00:40:56   know what happened there were perhaps [TS]

00:40:59   the hats were not the hots for not good [TS]

00:41:01   looking at the name nute gunray's pretty [TS]

00:41:03   cool well and of course they did the [TS]

00:41:07   subtitle I mean and we have really [TS]

00:41:10   touched on this but the i believe the [TS]

00:41:11   Phantom edit which is the you know the [TS]

00:41:14   mysterious re-edit of this does have all [TS]

00:41:17   those scenes subtitle they basically [TS]

00:41:18   just w nonsense and then subtitle them [TS]

00:41:21   with totally newer you know totally new [TS]

00:41:23   lines of dialogue period it turns out [TS]

00:41:25   you can fix a lot of value but once you [TS]

00:41:27   get rid of like once you get rid of [TS]

00:41:29   their bad line rings you're still left [TS]

00:41:30   with the bad lines which like we talked [TS]

00:41:31   about you know the exposition radio [TS]

00:41:32   network they are so many things this [TS]

00:41:35   movie it's time for the expedition tried [TS]

00:41:37   to speak up like it [TS]

00:41:38   everyone is speaking at the position for [TS]

00:41:39   no reason what could he has to complete [TS]

00:41:41   two more circuits thank you [TS]

00:41:43   yeah i mean like the let me explain the [TS]

00:41:45   motivations of all the characters and [TS]

00:41:47   what's happening in this interminable [TS]

00:41:48   scene in which we will just be sitting [TS]

00:41:50   in chairs and talking which is the red [TS]

00:41:51   letter media things point out as big [TS]

00:41:52   theme of the prequels people sitting [TS]

00:41:54   still and talking about the most boring [TS]

00:41:57   things you could ever possibly imagine [TS]

00:41:58   all the camera also stationary shoot [TS]

00:42:00   someone at a time and you just want to [TS]

00:42:02   kill yourself [TS]

00:42:03   should I really blast through the plot [TS]

00:42:06   here and let you stop me along the way [TS]

00:42:08   because I i took noticed and it's gonna [TS]

00:42:10   be three hours oh I know [TS]

00:42:13   oh I'll try to be quick but i but i want [TS]

00:42:15   to give everybody a chance to to jump in [TS]

00:42:17   with specific because I know otherwise [TS]

00:42:19   we're going to jump around even more and [TS]

00:42:20   we're going to miss some stuff we we [TS]

00:42:22   can't leave a stone unturned we need to [TS]

00:42:24   smash everything down and and and 10 [TS]

00:42:26   make its all stone Jason rush into [TS]

00:42:28   oblivion really left is great ash to use [TS]

00:42:31   the theme of the previous episode [TS]

00:42:32   alright so so we talked we talked about [TS]

00:42:34   the opening credits which involve [TS]

00:42:35   taxation and trade routes we should be [TS]

00:42:37   exact [TS]

00:42:38   really the kind of reuniting with the [TS]

00:42:40   feelings that I have in childhood than I [TS]

00:42:42   expected [TS]

00:42:42   also trade routes makes no sense because [TS]

00:42:44   everybody goes their space [TS]

00:42:46   don't overthink it okay well is the [TS]

00:42:49   Kessel run a trader and I was the Trade [TS]

00:42:50   Federation a member of the Republic and [TS]

00:42:53   why is there a senator from the Trade [TS]

00:42:54   Federation [TS]

00:42:55   yeah that makes no sense to me right [TS]

00:42:57   also I am amused that there's a [TS]

00:42:58   federation in this because it's that [TS]

00:42:59   shot across the bow and star trek is [TS]

00:43:01   that what that is yeah they're invading [TS]

00:43:03   that planets it's a violation of the [TS]

00:43:04   prime directive what is wrong with them [TS]

00:43:06   on the back at bad accidents and puppet [TS]

00:43:09   heads like i said i think it's a mistake [TS]

00:43:10   totally unnecessary and it so the droids [TS]

00:43:14   ok so there are these droids they are it [TS]

00:43:17   this is another issue that I had is that [TS]

00:43:19   they are these dumb you're dumb [TS]

00:43:21   they're Joker's there-there there-there [TS]

00:43:23   are a joke like we in there there and [TS]

00:43:27   they've got guns and they're like the [TS]

00:43:28   army but they're just a joke that you [TS]

00:43:30   are never something that you could take [TS]

00:43:32   seriously as I i think one of the kind [TS]

00:43:35   of kid movie tropes of of this movie is [TS]

00:43:39   that is that oh the kids love him and my [TS]

00:43:42   kids thought they were funny because [TS]

00:43:43   their enemies and enemies that are goofy [TS]

00:43:45   and not threatening right but they're [TS]

00:43:47   not at all threatening they're not [TS]

00:43:48   competent and anyway they're apparently [TS]

00:43:50   not network because they have to talk [TS]

00:43:51   amongst themselves to discuss tactics [TS]

00:43:53   that they are networks of the control [TS]

00:43:55   ship so my mac has a better voice [TS]

00:43:58   synthesizer why would you have this if [TS]

00:44:01   you know why have an army entirely [TS]

00:44:03   people out of robots that you can [TS]

00:44:05   control a hundred percent if they're [TS]

00:44:07   incompetent and have senses of humor [TS]

00:44:09   like the there's no logic to that [TS]

00:44:11   there's a scene where the Trade [TS]

00:44:13   Federation guys radio down to the planet [TS]

00:44:15   to talk to their leaders and I'm [TS]

00:44:17   thinking okay they're talking to the [TS]

00:44:18   leaders and it's these stupid droids [TS]

00:44:20   were the leaders apparently they are [TS]

00:44:22   those soldiers and they're the leaders [TS]

00:44:23   and I thought again you know if you put [TS]

00:44:26   a few like Trade Federation generals or [TS]

00:44:29   something down on the planet who are [TS]

00:44:31   menacing you could almost get away with [TS]

00:44:33   the droids being goofy but when when the [TS]

00:44:36   droids are in charge [TS]

00:44:37   too-hoo it's like who are these all [TS]

00:44:39   right they had no one to fight because [TS]

00:44:40   that planet was empty [TS]

00:44:42   yes there's nobody on the planet [TS]

00:44:44   everybody was hiding under a table [TS]

00:44:46   I just bothered by how long it takes the [TS]

00:44:48   droids to make up their minds about [TS]

00:44:49   anything [TS]

00:44:50   when qui-gon and obi-wan bust out of the [TS]

00:44:52   fog filled room the robot just stand [TS]

00:44:54   there with laser guns wait [TS]

00:44:56   yeah and then there's that scene later [TS]

00:44:58   on where the robot actually specifically [TS]

00:45:00   takes time to make up his mind goes uh [TS]

00:45:03   well I uh you're under arrest [TS]

00:45:06   now that's he's using his smartass [TS]

00:45:07   algorithm there there's like that was [TS]

00:45:09   that was a comedy that was an attempt at [TS]

00:45:10   comedy and I was hard to push buttons [TS]

00:45:12   with her gone for that those are the [TS]

00:45:14   cokes and it's actually even more of a [TS]

00:45:16   contrast because there are those battle [TS]

00:45:18   droids that roll around and shoot things [TS]

00:45:20   and have they're gonna string has [TS]

00:45:21   scary-go-round experienced and capable [TS]

00:45:24   and and yet they're mixed in with these [TS]

00:45:27   ridiculous comic relief yeah why not [TS]

00:45:29   have an army though you through it they [TS]

00:45:31   said they went down the wrong tech tree [TS]

00:45:33   and they ended up with millions of a [TS]

00:45:34   stepmother is what we've done with [TS]

00:45:36   facility somebody bought somebody lunch [TS]

00:45:38   so they went with the wrong gender the [TS]

00:45:40   the there is some call high as it states [TS]

00:45:43   it is hard to even form the words [TS]

00:45:45   there's some cool stuff in the first [TS]

00:45:47   five minutes with the Jedi you know like [TS]

00:45:49   they've got their lightsabers out there [TS]

00:45:51   like bouncing guide see I like some of [TS]

00:45:53   that sleep the lightsabers come out [TS]

00:45:55   instantly John's talked about this [TS]

00:45:57   before lightsabers used to be something [TS]

00:45:58   exotic and cool and mysterious and here [TS]

00:46:01   they're just waving it around like [TS]

00:46:03   exhibitionists it's like it's like jaws [TS]

00:46:06   I don't have made the exact same analogy [TS]

00:46:07   but it's like the shark in Jaws they [TS]

00:46:09   were originally lightsabers were not all [TS]

00:46:11   over the place for technical reasons the [TS]

00:46:12   same reason you didn't see the shark in [TS]

00:46:13   Jaws for technical reasons stupid shark [TS]

00:46:15   would work so you had to not show it and [TS]

00:46:17   that turned out to be the correct the [TS]

00:46:18   better artistic choice here now we don't [TS]

00:46:21   have the problem sharks all time [TS]

00:46:22   lightsabers going to be everywhere and [TS]

00:46:24   it's where the movies worse for and I [TS]

00:46:26   did have this point when watching it was [TS]

00:46:27   the like the thing that got me was [TS]

00:46:29   there's a part where their you know [TS]

00:46:30   their reviews and lights or whatever and [TS]

00:46:32   then I think I'll be one reaches over [TS]

00:46:33   and like you know waves his hand in the [TS]

00:46:35   trees fall down it's like if you can do [TS]

00:46:36   that why would you even put a lifesaver [TS]

00:46:38   just start throwing words around like [TS]

00:46:40   you're done [TS]

00:46:41   these guys are clearly not not able to [TS]

00:46:43   hold up to that they treat the [TS]

00:46:44   lightsabers like a light show to they [TS]

00:46:47   swing around you that they don't just [TS]

00:46:48   put it away they don't just turn it off [TS]

00:46:50   they've gotta spin it three times and [TS]

00:46:51   then put it back on the better their [TS]

00:46:53   samurai gannett this again why the Jedi [TS]

00:46:55   had to fall because they were corrupt [TS]

00:46:58   nature is if i don't get so many fancy [TS]

00:47:00   lights and had really fabulous flare [TS]

00:47:04   no not until it was gone and then and [TS]

00:47:06   then we see cuz we all grew up with the [TS]

00:47:07   original movies thinking that they were [TS]

00:47:09   scarce resources turns out that when [TS]

00:47:10   there were lots of Jedi and lots of [TS]

00:47:12   lightsabers not so cool air kinda lame [TS]

00:47:14   expanded its better that general little [TS]

00:47:16   Jedi goes a long ways with the fact that [TS]

00:47:18   they're being so many Jedi's kind of [TS]

00:47:19   leads to something that comes up a [TS]

00:47:21   little bit later in the film but when [TS]

00:47:23   they mentioned that Anakin could [TS]

00:47:26   potentially be the with the prophecy [TS]

00:47:28   that it was supposed to bring balance [TS]

00:47:30   that wars yet nobody notice that the [TS]

00:47:33   Jedi are thriving in the city that long [TS]

00:47:35   since disappeared to the only possible [TS]

00:47:36   meaning of balance restoring balance [TS]

00:47:38   means the resurgence of the dark side [TS]

00:47:40   but that brings up another point here [TS]

00:47:42   like that the whole idea of a prophecy [TS]

00:47:43   does not seem Star Wars to me [TS]

00:47:45   yeah that's dumb that's dumb in itself [TS]

00:47:47   you're right like that whole concept [TS]

00:47:48   that there is there is a chosen one that [TS]

00:47:50   there's a prophecy that that that does [TS]

00:47:52   not because Luke was not the chosen one [TS]

00:47:54   there's no prophecy about loose who has [TS]

00:47:56   proved prophesizing what like what is [TS]

00:47:59   the privacy doesn't make sense either [TS]

00:48:00   because even if you ultimately brings [TS]

00:48:01   balance to the force by killing you know [TS]

00:48:03   the upper they're still you know what [TS]

00:48:04   good Jedi left so it's going to get all [TS]

00:48:06   out of whack and not the whole idea of [TS]

00:48:08   balance like it's like the television [TS]

00:48:09   thing with equal time you know because [TS]

00:48:11   the airwaves Republican like it doesn't [TS]

00:48:12   make any sense it's nonsensical and [TS]

00:48:14   prophecies don't belong install myself [TS]

00:48:16   time for Sith and Jedi photographs ok [TS]

00:48:18   that that's the appropriate balance we [TS]

00:48:20   want half murder and half not murder [TS]

00:48:22   that is a proprietary only so-so episode [TS]

00:48:24   1 is the republican response is what [TS]

00:48:26   you're saying and they went they went [TS]

00:48:28   scientific I mean they tried to explain [TS]

00:48:30   away the horses midi-chlorians you know [TS]

00:48:32   microscopic animals that live in our [TS]

00:48:34   blood but then they go right back to [TS]

00:48:36   they help with the top is the force [TS]

00:48:38   which is supernatural [TS]

00:48:40   what why also can i say why the virgin [TS]

00:48:43   birth [TS]

00:48:44   thats hanging in a certain point you [TS]

00:48:46   just like so well because he couldn't [TS]

00:48:48   come up with anybody that would be [TS]

00:48:49   interesting enough to have is the father [TS]

00:48:51   like that and not interesting is the [TS]

00:48:52   characters enter and I know but now now [TS]

00:48:54   the forces is is full of Christian [TS]

00:48:57   symbolism is not a strange you people at [TS]

00:49:00   home getting all this we already know [TS]

00:49:02   that your closest is obsessed with [TS]

00:49:03   Joseph Campbell's mythic stories [TS]

00:49:06   structure of course he's going to put a [TS]

00:49:09   virgin birth and if you can but like but [TS]

00:49:11   don't even bother doing it they have it [TS]

00:49:12   there is literally one line for the for [TS]

00:49:14   the quote-unquote version but you can [TS]

00:49:16   have an absentee father but it turns out [TS]

00:49:17   that wasn't the disney movie until [TS]

00:49:19   recently [TS]

00:49:20   yeah well he was just that he was just a [TS]

00:49:22   guy who like you know oh yeah he left us [TS]

00:49:24   you know like that would make more sense [TS]

00:49:25   like that no but that's the only way you [TS]

00:49:27   could read it as an adult if some other [TS]

00:49:28   person told you that you'd say this [TS]

00:49:30   woman is in denial because some man [TS]

00:49:31   knocked her up and left [TS]

00:49:33   that's something that's what you would [TS]

00:49:34   you relax absolutely but it doesn't it [TS]

00:49:36   doesn't it or or horses or simply enough [TS]

00:49:39   he could just have been a slave that was [TS]

00:49:40   killed as part of you know sort of a [TS]

00:49:42   poor master and then that would explain [TS]

00:49:43   some of Anakin's hatred for you know the [TS]

00:49:46   slaves now but that wouldn't explain why [TS]

00:49:48   he's so special which frankly doesn't [TS]

00:49:50   seem that bad in its Tatooine state [TS]

00:49:53   yeah he's pretty happy to be a slave in [TS]

00:49:55   the beginning is only when he comes back [TS]

00:49:56   as a moody team he's like you know what [TS]

00:49:57   slavery sucks [TS]

00:49:58   he's a slave he has plenty of free time [TS]

00:50:00   he has his own house he has time to [TS]

00:50:02   build a robot with artificial [TS]

00:50:04   intelligence that speaks every language [TS]

00:50:05   and the coolest pod racer in the world [TS]

00:50:08   has enough money to get the parts to [TS]

00:50:10   make that robot yeah and he has like [TS]

00:50:12   three different plastic highlights tix [TS]

00:50:14   hanging in his room I can't like the [TS]

00:50:16   props in this movie were just they just [TS]

00:50:17   want the walmart and got them it's safe [TS]

00:50:19   to say that and his mom are not you know [TS]

00:50:22   showing off the darkest side of slavery [TS]

00:50:25   building a podracer is like having your [TS]

00:50:26   own formula 1 racer for a slave boy he [TS]

00:50:29   has awfully silky hair and his mother [TS]

00:50:31   doesn't do anything as a slave she just [TS]

00:50:33   stays home and keeps house for us [TS]

00:50:35   well she does she does it later in the [TS]

00:50:36   movie she gets to have lines that do not [TS]

00:50:39   look like a bullet points suddenly she [TS]

00:50:41   becomes a fortune cookie later in the [TS]

00:50:43   movie when she goes into her for fortune [TS]

00:50:45   cookie line ringing work like it she [TS]

00:50:47   says you have given hope to those who [TS]

00:50:48   have none [TS]

00:50:49   the path this path is replaced before [TS]

00:50:51   you you know and we can't stop it [TS]

00:50:53   anymore that we can stop the setting of [TS]

00:50:54   the sounds like mom when did you become [TS]

00:50:56   a fortune cookie business I were site [TS]

00:50:58   the best one that she delivers to my [TS]

00:50:59   mind is still the he was meant to help [TS]

00:51:01   you like because if you if you want that [TS]

00:51:05   in context of the scene it doesn't [TS]

00:51:07   actually make any sense like it's like [TS]

00:51:09   she's trying to get rid of it at that [TS]

00:51:10   point like yeah yeah he's here to help [TS]

00:51:12   you [TS]

00:51:13   yeah he was meant to help you should [TS]

00:51:14   take away you can have my son strangers [TS]

00:51:17   who have come into my house please take [TS]

00:51:18   me take my son and risked his life and [TS]

00:51:21   from that comes out of nowhere she's [TS]

00:51:23   trying to get him out of this [TS]

00:51:24   horrible life of slavery which involves [TS]

00:51:25   him having lots of time for hobbies not [TS]

00:51:28   i mean there are so many moving parts in [TS]

00:51:30   this movie like to have a movie with [TS]

00:51:31   this many actual characters and it is [TS]

00:51:33   very difficult to do like you can't [TS]

00:51:35   that's not enough time it to our running [TS]

00:51:37   time movies that have this many [TS]

00:51:38   characters make them that interesting so [TS]

00:51:39   you kind of have to like go usual [TS]

00:51:40   suspects and have a couple of [TS]

00:51:42   interesting character creates an acute [TS]

00:51:43   good interactions and use your 12 line [TS]

00:51:45   sparingly to make an ensemble cast type [TS]

00:51:47   thing but that is a way higher degree of [TS]

00:51:49   difficulty than I mean this guy couldn't [TS]

00:51:51   shoot a cereal commercial or write us [TS]

00:51:53   your commercial for that matter [TS]

00:51:54   competently there's no way you can have [TS]

00:51:56   all these characters and have all all [TS]

00:51:58   the characters and they're not [TS]

00:51:59   honeycombs big yeah yeah it's not small [TS]

00:52:04   no no that's that too much too much ammo [TS]

00:52:06   too much move it [TS]

00:52:07   yeah see I I rest my case yeah faster [TS]

00:52:10   and more intense it's either monotone or [TS]

00:52:13   really jari and over-the-top honeycomb [TS]

00:52:16   is big [TS]

00:52:17   yeah yeah yeah yeah it's not small too [TS]

00:52:21   much no flatten it out of town too sad [TS]

00:52:23   to sad music so I asked my son about [TS]

00:52:26   George are my eight-year-old son because [TS]

00:52:29   you know this is that argument again we [TS]

00:52:31   all hate your jarrow charger so bad let [TS]

00:52:33   me tell you at having watched this movie [TS]

00:52:34   I was going to see charger is not the [TS]

00:52:37   worst thing hrs chart is far from the [TS]

00:52:40   worst thing in this movie far far from [TS]

00:52:43   the worst thing in this movie and that [TS]

00:52:44   system because he's really not that good [TS]

00:52:46   but I asked my son about jar jar and and [TS]

00:52:49   this is what he said he said and I quote [TS]

00:52:51   he's funny [TS]

00:52:53   instead of excuse me he says ex-squeeze [TS]

00:52:55   me nailed it [TS]

00:52:57   yeah boom he's funny falls down [TS]

00:53:01   he's a wacky guy well well well you can [TS]

00:53:04   if you can't know why maybe 15 years [TS]

00:53:06   later they would have laughed at the [TS]

00:53:08   Stephanie Tanner reference that he keeps [TS]

00:53:09   making how rude at least three separate [TS]

00:53:13   times how would how do you know for how [TS]

00:53:16   so well Steve it looks hot [TS]

00:53:20   nothing along if I do like that charge [TS]

00:53:23   our is at least setup is being annoying [TS]

00:53:24   to even the Gungans I appreciate that [TS]

00:53:27   they threw him out and exiled MTSU so [TS]

00:53:29   clumsy that's the kind of thing you want [TS]

00:53:31   to put your movie it's so he gets so [TS]

00:53:32   much screenshot Jackie the laziest that [TS]

00:53:35   so we go to the we go to the Gungan City [TS]

00:53:41   and i wanted to mention this to because [TS]

00:53:43   something struck me for I was watching [TS]

00:53:45   it somebody threw a brick at my head [TS]

00:53:47   literally struck me and now I'm in the [TS]

00:53:50   original movies the places we go our [TS]

00:53:53   real places with fictional bits added on [TS]

00:53:56   and this was an example of a place [TS]

00:53:59   that's just completely made-up it's just [TS]

00:54:01   that there's an absence of place it is a [TS]

00:54:04   cgi world everybody's in front of a [TS]

00:54:06   green screen half the actors are not [TS]

00:54:08   actually people they're CGI characters [TS]

00:54:11   and it bothered me I think that's [TS]

00:54:12   actually one of the ways in which this [TS]

00:54:14   movie sales compared to as technically [TS]

00:54:18   brilliant as it is is is like the scenes [TS]

00:54:21   and later on in the end that are Italy [TS]

00:54:23   that are more effective in that way but [TS]

00:54:27   but this was an example like of more [TS]

00:54:29   money than sense where the Gungan City [TS]

00:54:31   just you know I know it's supposed to be [TS]

00:54:33   spectacular or something but it was not [TS]

00:54:34   just founded depressing because it was [TS]

00:54:36   completely a just invented stuff and it [TS]

00:54:40   was there's no there and so they're two [TS]

00:54:41   different nothing there just because you [TS]

00:54:43   can I i was shocked at how bad the [TS]

00:54:45   green-screen things look at this movie [TS]

00:54:47   because I was thinking there's another [TS]

00:54:48   thing going and I was thinking well [TS]

00:54:49   let's look at the effects because the [TS]

00:54:50   effects are going to be really good but [TS]

00:54:52   Jar Jar do not age well and in fact [TS]

00:54:54   they're really a terrible they do not [TS]

00:54:56   look good and the thing about the thing [TS]

00:54:57   about the Gungan City particular my note [TS]

00:54:59   when I saw that it's not just that it's [TS]

00:55:01   a green screen there's nothing there but [TS]

00:55:03   that likes what they replaced the green [TS]

00:55:04   screen with looks like an empty [TS]

00:55:06   soundstage just like you could have made [TS]

00:55:08   anything you don't have to make it look [TS]

00:55:10   like a bee soundstage there is literally [TS]

00:55:11   a green screen there you could make [TS]

00:55:13   something that looks interesting lived [TS]

00:55:16   in like an actual city and instead what [TS]

00:55:18   they filled in the green screen with was [TS]

00:55:20   something that looks like an empty sound [TS]

00:55:21   stage with bad props on it [TS]

00:55:23   here's the thing about that is that I [TS]

00:55:24   mean we have seen computer-generated [TS]

00:55:26   scenery that that works for movies that [TS]

00:55:29   mean because if you look at any other [TS]

00:55:31   pixar movies for example that's a fake I [TS]

00:55:33   mean it's alright look at look at the [TS]

00:55:34   podrace for crying out loud you're not a [TS]

00:55:36   real desert there those are mostly [TS]

00:55:38   computer-generated everything there [TS]

00:55:40   right it looks like a desert [TS]

00:55:42   yeah no i agree i mean i think there's [TS]

00:55:43   it's too everything's too smooth and [TS]

00:55:46   clean and [TS]

00:55:47   doesn't quite empty just nothing there [TS]

00:55:49   like that boo is a giant putting green [TS]

00:55:51   same problem [TS]

00:55:52   more than that I think you know and part [TS]

00:55:54   of it is the the consciousness of the [TS]

00:55:56   effects failing but some of it is also [TS]

00:55:58   just the it's sort of an uncanny valley [TS]

00:56:00   effect of its not real right like you've [TS]

00:56:04   hit that point where like yeah the [TS]

00:56:05   technically there is a lot of stuff [TS]

00:56:07   that's very good but the same time [TS]

00:56:08   there's something missing that makes [TS]

00:56:09   this inherently not there's no soul to [TS]

00:56:12   it like resigning doesn't look like a [TS]

00:56:13   place to hope the whole conception of [TS]

00:56:16   the Gungans is wrong the fact that they [TS]

00:56:19   have a land-based army but they live [TS]

00:56:20   underwater they're considered primitives [TS]

00:56:22   but they have a force field they live [TS]

00:56:24   underwater in the air and bubble [TS]

00:56:26   yeah it did you couldn't I mean the [TS]

00:56:28   Jawas you see very little of them but [TS]

00:56:30   they feel like real creatures the Tusken [TS]

00:56:33   Raiders you see hardly anything of them [TS]

00:56:35   but I could see how I can extrapolate [TS]

00:56:37   back i can see they seem real [TS]

00:56:40   they are there that's another thing that [TS]

00:56:42   little unique there that legitimately [TS]

00:56:44   made me laugh yeah that's awesome writer [TS]

00:56:45   that camp that everyone a bunch of yep [TS]

00:56:47   that is the probably be funny i noted [TS]

00:56:49   that is the funniest point of this [TS]

00:56:51   entire movie because it doesn't involve [TS]

00:56:52   dialogue and be at that's what they [TS]

00:56:54   would do [TS]

00:56:55   yeah yeah yeah absolutely then shortly [TS]

00:56:57   after that is what i think is the best [TS]

00:56:58   cameo / bit of fanservice where the pod [TS]

00:57:02   racer zoom past the Johnny screams yeah [TS]

00:57:05   one thing I do like about Nabu is it's [TS]

00:57:07   the first time in the star wars universe [TS]

00:57:09   that there are two places on a planet [TS]

00:57:12   yes up until now everything is either [TS]

00:57:14   all desert are all ice there's two [TS]

00:57:15   separately evolved intelligent races on [TS]

00:57:18   the planet that doesn't happen [TS]

00:57:20   well so far as we know oh that's what [TS]

00:57:21   doesn't happen well and what would you [TS]

00:57:24   know why do we have to go back to [TS]

00:57:25   Tatooine do why is this as as my as my [TS]

00:57:27   friend Tony says why is Tatooine it's [TS]

00:57:30   like the busiest outer rim planet in the [TS]

00:57:32   world like everybody goes through [TS]

00:57:34   Tatooine [TS]

00:57:35   well it's between abu and chorus but [TS]

00:57:37   it's supposed to be in the middle of [TS]

00:57:38   nowhere [TS]

00:57:40   that's what he said a way to the capital [TS]

00:57:41   you know it's along the ground know [TS]

00:57:43   what's on the i-90 it all comes down to [TS]

00:57:45   shipping again and again the reason that [TS]

00:57:47   we know right now between is because [TS]

00:57:48   because they end up there this time and [TS]

00:57:51   that leads to Tatooine being important [TS]

00:57:53   but you're right you're right [TS]

00:57:56   um I wanted to let see we're going to [TS]

00:57:58   hide Luke on his father's home planet [TS]

00:58:00   never think to look there never looking [TS]

00:58:02   with his uncle Julian loved mr. change [TS]

00:58:06   this is Neela love the thing going [TS]

00:58:08   through the planet core with all the [TS]

00:58:09   fish although I have to say again why [TS]

00:58:11   even call it the planet course i mean- [TS]

00:58:13   course not matter that are completely [TS]

00:58:15   scientifically wrong but why don't you [TS]

00:58:17   just say that we have to go underwater [TS]

00:58:18   for a long time what do you say we go [TS]

00:58:20   through the planets core because this [TS]

00:58:22   planet is so messed up that there's [TS]

00:58:24   water and its core that's crazy what [TS]

00:58:27   kind of planet is this [TS]

00:58:28   well then why did the invasion force [TS]

00:58:30   land on the opposite side of the planet [TS]

00:58:31   from where they were totally going to [TS]

00:58:33   invent a drive with the point of what if [TS]

00:58:36   you have the point about the we need jar [TS]

00:58:38   jar to get where we're going yeah and [TS]

00:58:40   then the navigator [TS]

00:58:41   yeah I pretended then they say like oh [TS]

00:58:43   don't worry oh yeah we use the first [TS]

00:58:44   story about school so why did we bring [TS]

00:58:46   him and then we have to knock him out [TS]

00:58:48   and why doesn't the containment shield [TS]

00:58:50   around the submarine fail when the power [TS]

00:58:54   fails and I'm so angry he had a backup [TS]

00:58:58   why do you drive on parkways and park [TS]

00:58:59   and ride with the fish fish being eaten [TS]

00:59:02   by other fish my son loved it [TS]

00:59:05   although again they do that joke twice [TS]

00:59:07   yeah now there's nothing there's no [TS]

00:59:08   reason that scene where they're under [TS]

00:59:10   the water other than like it would be [TS]

00:59:11   cool if there was a big fish [TS]

00:59:13   okay well like what what does this have [TS]

00:59:14   to do with anything that big eel thing [TS]

00:59:16   is a very discerning either he eats only [TS]

00:59:19   the giant fish by and discard the head [TS]

00:59:21   and the rest will say that let you know [TS]

00:59:23   I was thinking in these giant getting [TS]

00:59:25   things i was thinking i know this is [TS]

00:59:26   unfair but i do i can't help but do it [TS]

00:59:28   like it compare compare these movies to [TS]

00:59:30   like you know the actual star wars [TS]

00:59:32   movies and you're like think about what [TS]

00:59:33   happened when we had characters who [TS]

00:59:36   involved who had a scene with like a big [TS]

00:59:38   creature that was going to eat them [TS]

00:59:39   think about what was going on with [TS]

00:59:41   likely another thing in the asteroid [TS]

00:59:42   right what was going on that scene where [TS]

00:59:45   characters that we were invested in we [TS]

00:59:46   had interpersonal attention we had plot [TS]

00:59:48   tension because they were trying to know [TS]

00:59:50   someone was trying to capture them and [TS]

00:59:51   you also have the creature in the [TS]

00:59:53   mystery and and the fun they're like 900 [TS]

00:59:55   things going on that scene and just [TS]

00:59:56   seeing what's going on transportation of [TS]

00:59:58   characters we don't care about from [TS]

00:59:59   point a table [TS]

00:59:59   point a table [TS]

01:00:00   point B without some minor things that [TS]

01:00:02   happened like it there is no there are [TS]

01:00:04   no layers to this movie there is no [TS]

01:00:05   reason that seemed to be in there and [TS]

01:00:07   like anytime they do anything remotely [TS]

01:00:08   similar to something from one of the [TS]

01:00:10   good Star Wars movies you like what like [TS]

01:00:12   it just do not compare them in your mind [TS]

01:00:15   because you will realize just it'll just [TS]

01:00:17   make you hate this movie anymore like [TS]

01:00:18   there's nothing there [TS]

01:00:19   qui-gon seems bored he's read the script [TS]

01:00:22   he knows how it's going to come out as [TS]

01:00:24   much action as there is going on screen [TS]

01:00:26   what's going on is boring I mean it's [TS]

01:00:28   just set piece after set piece for the [TS]

01:00:30   first up until almost where they land on [TS]

01:00:32   characters are bored and there's no [TS]

01:00:34   there's no tension whatsoever because no [TS]

01:00:36   there's no interpersonal attention and [TS]

01:00:38   there's no plot tension there's nothing [TS]

01:00:39   right well we don't we don't care if the [TS]

01:00:41   characters die for starters which is a [TS]

01:00:42   small problem but then that even when [TS]

01:00:45   it's set up that they might be [TS]

01:00:46   potentially in jeopardy you've got quite [TS]

01:00:48   on saying oh it won't be a problem [TS]

01:00:50   well so why am I watching he's a [TS]

01:00:52   strategic idiot is his whole approach to [TS]

01:00:55   the movie is something will turn up [TS]

01:00:57   yeah it all worked before up i would [TS]

01:00:59   like to briefly because this is a good [TS]

01:01:01   spot for present my thesis for a [TS]

01:01:03   marginally acceptable way to view this [TS]

01:01:05   movie [TS]

01:01:06   alright let's hear drunk now people have [TS]

01:01:10   tried that they just get really really [TS]

01:01:12   angry as are throwing things at their [TS]

01:01:13   televisions or they cry oh it's clear [TS]

01:01:15   that quite God really has no reason to [TS]

01:01:17   bring Jar Jar law he claims it's the [TS]

01:01:19   navigate he's the navigator but [TS]

01:01:21   immediately charged RS where we go in [TS]

01:01:23   and just says add the forceful guidance [TS]

01:01:25   I always thought they just felt bad [TS]

01:01:26   because he was going to get X reacts [TS]

01:01:28   I'll to put in jail or something so they [TS]

01:01:30   just sprung him [TS]

01:01:31   my theory is that quite on hates having [TS]

01:01:34   obi-wan as a Padawan front of the very [TS]

01:01:38   beginning of the movie the first thing [TS]

01:01:40   will be one says is i have a bad feeling [TS]

01:01:42   about this [TS]

01:01:43   my god basically says shut up it'll be [TS]

01:01:45   fine [TS]

01:01:46   that's it that's a great first line for [TS]

01:01:47   the heroes by the way yes it it really [TS]

01:01:49   said it's probably here are you here are [TS]

01:01:52   two teammates they really do have a bad [TS]

01:01:55   feeling i do but we're all supposed to [TS]

01:01:57   cheer right because it's a callback we [TS]

01:01:59   all go whoa bad feeling about this [TS]

01:02:01   it's but it's like a light sabers [TS]

01:02:02   they're just dumping them onto the [TS]

01:02:03   screen right now and I contend this [TS]

01:02:05   movie would have been better if it had [TS]

01:02:06   been made up entirely of lines from the [TS]

01:02:08   original movie [TS]

01:02:09   he ordered it is felt a very right way [TS]

01:02:11   and the right order [TS]

01:02:13   I spent many and I believe things which [TS]

01:02:15   are just people sitting around saying [TS]

01:02:16   live from Star Wars I don't see why we [TS]

01:02:18   couldn't film that everybody within and [TS]

01:02:21   as we just mentioned it you can do that [TS]

01:02:22   well the Tusken Raiders routinely we're [TS]

01:02:24   all like it's one second will say could [TS]

01:02:26   find thumbs-up yes i smiled like you can [TS]

01:02:28   it's not like we're against that it's [TS]

01:02:30   like we're against callback systems [TS]

01:02:31   really yup knob [TS]

01:02:32   what a remarkable smell you've [TS]

01:02:33   discovered yeah man I got a new project [TS]

01:02:37   guys I'll see you later [TS]

01:02:38   so it's basically obi-wan qui gonn [TS]

01:02:41   complaining at each other and then quite [TS]

01:02:44   got taking every opportunity to try to [TS]

01:02:46   find somebody new to be his and probably [TS]

01:02:49   just sent to separate himself to [TS]

01:02:51   separate himself from obi-wan you stay [TS]

01:02:53   in the ship all going right now with the [TS]

01:02:54   stupid gun and with here and are the [TS]

01:02:57   minute he sees him says let's bring him [TS]

01:02:59   obi-wan gets mad and finds a sleep kids [TS]

01:03:01   could make laureates he says let's take [TS]

01:03:03   this kid is mad again at the end of the [TS]

01:03:06   movie he wants Darth Maul to be as part [TS]

01:03:08   of one they have the big council meeting [TS]

01:03:11   and they say well nobody would take this [TS]

01:03:14   kid is a Padawan he says I'll take it [TS]

01:03:15   all things you've already got no no we [TS]

01:03:18   got a map don't need only one he just [TS]

01:03:19   shoves obi-wan decided that moment he's [TS]

01:03:22   ready he's ready and obi-wan is just [TS]

01:03:23   crushed and admit I'm just making all [TS]

01:03:26   this up this is not a morning that is [TS]

01:03:29   when obi-wan decides to kill courtyard [TS]

01:03:31   and framed art more and then at the very [TS]

01:03:34   end of the movie qui gonn dies in front [TS]

01:03:36   of everyone's eyes and obi-wan is so sad [TS]

01:03:38   that he agrees to take his hated leaving [TS]

01:03:40   other which is how we now use Anakin on [TS]

01:03:43   as his Padawan he doesn't very good job [TS]

01:03:46   of it you know if I may suggest a reason [TS]

01:03:48   why qui gonn hey Toby 1 i'm gonna guess [TS]

01:03:51   it's the haircut and then and then [TS]

01:03:53   you've got the irony at the end when [TS]

01:03:55   when obi-wan gives Anakin the exact same [TS]

01:03:58   here is passing it down deep it's the [TS]

01:04:01   Padawan braid it's like the last thing [TS]

01:04:03   to the omen in a way everyone must go [TS]

01:04:06   through this at one point or another [TS]

01:04:08   yes the haircut is just one of the [TS]

01:04:09   trials when you become a dad you just [TS]

01:04:12   emulate your own dad give kids the same [TS]

01:04:14   stupid haircuts you had to get there is [TS]

01:04:16   a very strange walmart filled all the [TS]

01:04:17   Jedi here [TS]

01:04:18   so it's I mean you don't you don't [TS]

01:04:20   always see a rat tail and a rock and [TS]

01:04:23   pony and this thing it's hard to cut [TS]

01:04:24   hair with a lightsaber let me tell you [TS]

01:04:26   so that's my pitch i let me offer [TS]

01:04:28   another alternative theory which is that [TS]

01:04:30   to Marty's because I think marty is very [TS]

01:04:32   good but my theory is that qui-gon has a [TS]

01:04:34   tumor in his brain and it makes the [TS]

01:04:36   computer i like and want some imagined [TS]

01:04:39   Jar Jar Binks was not actually real and [TS]

01:04:42   everyone goes along with it because he [TS]

01:04:43   pities qui-gon for his horrible [TS]

01:04:45   hallucinations that he has it's possible [TS]

01:04:47   we want is also a hallucination it's not [TS]

01:04:48   really clear but quite i can also be [TS]

01:04:50   drunk the whole movie that's another [TS]

01:04:52   possible interpretation because he does [TS]

01:04:53   seem like that the complacency about [TS]

01:04:55   everything work are high [TS]

01:04:57   everything will work out on not problem [TS]

01:04:59   don't worry about it would be good [TS]

01:05:01   he tries to get my mind trick on water [TS]

01:05:03   doesn't warm and he's drunk [TS]

01:05:04   I just got an image in my head of Jeff [TS]

01:05:06   Bridges playing quite yeah man that [TS]

01:05:10   movie would have been great same robe [TS]

01:05:12   yeah exactly it's not that hard he's got [TS]

01:05:15   the beard you know this was a valued [TS]

01:05:18   robe they never show quite God's feet [TS]

01:05:20   maybe it's some sandals down there that [TS]

01:05:22   lightsaber really held his room together [TS]

01:05:24   yeah really help the room together so so [TS]

01:05:27   that's my pitch for a way to pretend [TS]

01:05:30   there's a protagonist of the movie and [TS]

01:05:31   it's not quite so bad to wait what who [TS]

01:05:34   is the protagonist in that obi-wan it's [TS]

01:05:37   obi-wan story it's about how open one [TS]

01:05:39   hates his master and his master dies we [TS]

01:05:42   make a rash decision and takes on this [TS]

01:05:44   kid who should not be a Jedi god he [TS]

01:05:46   hates it he hates me he hates him so [TS]

01:05:48   much that as the protagonist he decides [TS]

01:05:50   to go sulk in the spaceship for his bday [TS]

01:05:53   is the secret protagonist that does [TS]

01:05:54   nothing anybody anybody likes that's [TS]

01:05:56   right who is an onscreen for more than [TS]

01:05:58   about 10 minutes you guys realize we're [TS]

01:06:00   only up to the battle droids at the [TS]

01:06:01   beginning of the movie that's right [TS]

01:06:04   folks your friends at the incomparable [TS]

01:06:05   have spent an entire episode and barely [TS]

01:06:08   gotten five minutes into star wars [TS]

01:06:10   episode one [TS]

01:06:11   how long is it gonna take us to get [TS]

01:06:14   through this all the answers only one [TS]

01:06:15   more episode only one more hour we [TS]

01:06:17   promise that we'll be in our next [TS]

01:06:19   episode [TS]

01:06:20   until then I'd like to thank my guests [TS]

01:06:23   Steve let's John siracusa Monty actually [TS]

01:06:25   Dan more'n serenity Caldwell and Greg [TS]

01:06:28   moss [TS]

01:06:29   join us next time to find out if we [TS]
