The Incomparable

313: The Ziggurats of Yavin IV

the incomparable number 313 August 2016 [TS]

welcome everybody to the uncomfortable [TS]

i'm your host and still now before we [TS]

get started this week I wanna do a [TS]

disclaimer here I know that the star [TS]

wars road one trailer came out this week [TS]

and everybody expects us to do one of [TS]

  those endless trailer deconstruction [TS]

things that we sometimes do but I talked [TS]

to John siracusa he did watch it which [TS]

is a big step for him but he said he was [TS]

sore too busy doing other things and [TS]

didn't really have a lot to say about it [TS]

and thought he would just sort of let it [TS]

ride and save his thoughts until the [TS]

movie came out and I talked to Dan more [TS]

and he's on vacation and it just kind of [TS]

didn't happen and you know we can't [TS]

cover every trailer so anyway we will [TS]

definitely cover the movie when it comes [TS]

out in december but until then we're [TS]

just going to move on and talk about [TS]

  this [TS]

  [Music] [TS]

the uncomfortable number 313 artists [TS]

it is a period of Civil War rebel [TS]

podcast is striking from a hidden studio [TS]

have won their first victory against the [TS]

evening comfortable empire during the [TS]

battle a rebel host managed to steal [TS]

secret plans to the Empire's ultimate [TS]

weapon the road one trailer to analysis [TS]

a podcast with enough power to destroy [TS]

  an entire network [TS]

yes hello everybody and welcome back to [TS]

the incomparable and another of our [TS]

insanely over-indulgence analyses of a [TS]

  90-second Star Wars trailer [TS]

however as befits a new kind of movie [TS]

starring a bunch of rebels this episode [TS]

is also different I'm your squad leader [TS]

anthony johnson and today I have [TS]

assembled a ragtag group of misfits scum [TS]

and villains that includes experts [TS]

strategist chip Sabbath if this movie [TS]

doesn't include the lesser lack of [TS]

Dathomir as presented in Star Wars [TS]

Galaxies the MMO it sucks [TS]

check and munitions expert Liz miles i [TS]

expect many references to HK 47 who is [TS]

this pretty whose successor is featured [TS]

in the MMO at night at the old republic [TS]

the other and better star wars won your [TS]

expectations will be met and last but [TS]

definitely not least elite marksman [TS]

moisture jaan down with the legends [TS]

universe up with the new expanded [TS]

  universe all can travel [TS]

alright so let us start with a few [TS]

general thoughts about these movies and [TS]

the trailer before we go to the sort of [TS]

blow-by-blow frame by frame and the [TS]

first thing that we have to raise is the [TS]

question where do you stand [TS]

crawl or no crawl i personally don't [TS]

think that will be a crawl on these [TS]

anthology movies but what about you guys [TS]

I don't think there should be a crawl I [TS]

think that this is the the logic that [TS]

the that Kathleen Kennedy has given past [TS]

interviews you know they were so they're [TS]

still deciding whether or not it will [TS]

have a crawl but her logic for their not [TS]

being one was this is not a saga this is [TS]

an anthology it's a side story so I [TS]

think it should i think it should just [TS]

go right into the action I fear nothing [TS]

all is as the force wills it [TS]

I i had a very strong opinion once upon [TS]

  a time [TS]

that it absolutely had to have a crawl [TS]

in it I'll be fine if it doesn't but [TS]

even if even if there are a lot of other [TS]

signifiers that make it different than [TS]

the saga films that we've become [TS]

accustomed to the only films that we [TS]

really have to use as examples i would [TS]

be fine if the crawl is something we [TS]

just get at the beginning of any of [TS]

  these adventures [TS]

I you know I i I'm very you know at the [TS]

balance point of the force about it i [TS]

guess as it were for for nostalgia sake [TS]

even I don't think they've got to keep [TS]

the thing in but it's it's a nice note [TS]

for folks who may be a little bit [TS]

confused about when this happens what's [TS]

going on who think that [TS]

wait a minute how is this happening [TS]

after episode 7 isn't Darth Vader dead [TS]

those who aren't paying as much [TS]

attention as many of us hyper nerds do [TS]

the crawl is something that I i can see [TS]

as ending up winning out in that series [TS]

of arguments which we all know have [TS]

happened exactly how contentious they [TS]

were nobody knows but I could I could [TS]

see the kraal winning out and [TS]

specifically as as an opportunity to set [TS]

the time and and overall setting of the [TS]

movie for people who who they assume [TS]

haven't been watching tumblr for 18 [TS]

months but is that I mean and I see your [TS]

point but does that really is there [TS]

anybody who is going to go into a movie [TS]

like this not knowing anything at all [TS]

about it you know and not knowing over [TS]

this one set before the first movie or [TS]

the hand so that one is oh its Jung Han [TS]

Solo you know where my money and you [TS]

know my wife had no idea and would have [TS]

walked into the theater which is no idea [TS]

really now distributed but she's got [TS]

another four months of media saturation [TS]

to somehow trying to avoid to still not [TS]

know that you know come to SMU see the [TS]

shoot maybe see ads on TV but otherwise [TS]

you know she's not reading up on [TS]

articles are reading interviews or [TS]

  anything like that [TS]

  I you know that's that's that's the [TS]

thing for me is that as they do the [TS]

anthology films in between the saga [TS]

films having the crawling place [TS]

as as a means of telling people when [TS]

this is happening before or after this [TS]

or that or the other that that's that's [TS]

what i can see being the the functional [TS]

use of the crawl the reason to use the [TS]

kraal rather than just well star wars [TS]

movie start with a crawl [TS]

i guess i guess but i don't know what is [TS]

what do you think I i have no strong [TS]

strip club control it starts with an [TS]

apology week it was in the regular star [TS]

wars running movies with an episode [TS]

number then if it didn't have 1i would [TS]

find that infuriating but when it comes [TS]

to these ones i think i have no strong [TS]

feelings which depresses me deeply as if [TS]

there's one thing I can't stand someone [TS]

sitting on a body fat and unfortunately [TS]

I can't bring myself to move to either [TS]

side you know in Louisville cool and lua [TS]

crawl could we have that newsreel [TS]

announcer type voice from the beginning [TS]

of those clone wars episode of girl that [TS]

they could they couldn't they could [TS]

bring Greg Proops back from episode 11 [TS]

of the pod racing announcers you know i [TS]

love Star Wars story that was that [TS]

groups i had nodded man Cruz was one of [TS]

the one of the two heads of the of the [TS]

progress and one of my favorite episodes [TS]

of a podcast called I would i was there [TS]

something like that i'll find it and [TS]

give it to you for the show notes but [TS]

him talking about the experience of [TS]

  being told [TS]

all right Craig there's this job and [TS]

you're gonna want to take it but I can't [TS]

tell you anything else about ok and then [TS]

he shows up and all right i'm in Star [TS]

Wars I have no idea what I'm doing and [TS]

I'm going into a booth and i'm going to [TS]

be saying these lines and then i'm done [TS]

right guns and he became part of Star [TS]

Wars lore one other one other call [TS]

  option [TS]

it could just be a really short crawl [TS]

that goes this is not about the boffins [TS]

gotten to him forget that God both and [TS]

the movie wrong deathstone um I've [TS]

learned I've learned just how many of my [TS]

friends are fake star wars fans running [TS]

the Burmese those bones jokes oh my god [TS]

it's an easy mistake to make [TS]

I had I didn't see out like that it did [TS]

have that thought and then I realized oh [TS]

hang on a second wrong movie role models [TS]

that isn't and this one is isn't in the [TS]

first one so of course the campaign yes [TS]

what's another one to the ones the ones [TS]

who doubled down on it though the ones [TS]

who go oh ok I was wrong they can stay [TS]

but the ones who say no no I know what [TS]

I'm talking about right but my failings [TS]

on the crawl is I mean if they don't if [TS]

they do or don't have one you know [TS]

regardless i'm not gonna sort of cry [TS]

into my popcorn or anything but I feel [TS]

not having to crawl would be a way of [TS]

improving that these new movies are [TS]

about nostalgia for a start but also it [TS]

would be a way of really shaking things [TS]

up because at the moment like every star [TS]

wars movie ever has the kraal has the [TS]

fanfare as the star field and then pans [TS]

down from the starfield to a ship or a [TS]

planet or you know something in space [TS]

imagine if this movie started with a [TS]

long time ago in a galaxy far far away [TS]

and then just immediately cut to some [TS]

somebody running through corridors while [TS]

sirens are blaring and things explode [TS]

around them that would be so new so [TS]

shocking i mean it's not new in [TS]

cinematic terms but for star wars that [TS]

would be so on you yes you know that [TS]

would be upsetting that would be [TS]

upsetting when I expect the first shot [TS]

to be a bloody ship that's why I'm going [TS]

to see stars now I can be upsetting in a [TS]

good way in his kind of you know shock [TS]

people out of their comfort [TS]

well I like my comforts of our comfy [TS]

here i want my ship and want the distell [TS]

jizz well goddammit so that's why I'm [TS]

going I'm not going for their crazy new [TS]

ideas I just want delicious recycled [TS]

nineteen seventies air the eighties sci [TS]

fi the point of a comfort zone is that [TS]

it's coming just want the Dirty Dozen in [TS]

space that's all i want is the Dirty [TS]

Dozen space since apparently we couldn't [TS]

get a good dirty dozen with [TS]

supervillains cie just thinking about [TS]

the anthology movies in general when [TS]

they first announced that this is what [TS]

they were going to do I wasn't too [TS]

infused i mean i was immediately against [TS]

the idea but I wasn't particularly [TS]

enthused because i was like Mary ok [TS]

whatever but then when the very first [TS]

trailer for this the teaser trailer for [TS]

this immediately had me interested [TS]

partly because just a bit because of the [TS]

  story that there [TS]

they're doing but then this trailer [TS]

especially this trailer really got me [TS]

and I started to think I mean maybe it's [TS]

hyperbolic it to say that I might [TS]

actually enjoy these more than the saga [TS]

movies that's probably not true but I do [TS]

feel I'm going to enjoy these a lot [TS]

because there is something about these [TS]

that appeals to the same part of me that [TS]

the star wars role-playing game appeal [TS]

to me which is you know this idea of [TS]

what happens away from the heroes what [TS]

happens in the other parts of the galaxy [TS]

that hard and Luke on tin and not just [TS]

at different times at the same time but [TS]

just in a different physical place what [TS]

is happening there but you know I feel I [TS]

feel like I feel like the diversity of [TS]

the games is something that they [TS]

actually have an opportunity in you know [TS]

this trailer we see a lot more emphasis [TS]

on the wars part of souls it was like a [TS]

war film like where Eagles dare or [TS]

something like that and and i love the [TS]

notion that who knows we could get we [TS]

could get a a rogue squadron you know [TS]

game type movie narrative out of doing [TS]

something with black squadron from the [TS]

new twilight saga trilogy of films [TS]

  there's there's no reason they couldn't [TS]

do a side story that just stars oscar [TS]

isaac and snapbacks Lee and all those [TS]

guys there's there's possibility that [TS]

the han solo movie is going to be [TS]

treasure island and space which disney [TS]

tried to do in animated form and failed [TS]

miserably but as a Star Wars movie maybe [TS]

it worked great and I I like being able [TS]

to move away from the the the family [TS]

saga destined chosen one hero narrative [TS]

and and get to play around in this [TS]

universe and interesting ways and we [TS]

even get you know some of the things [TS]

that we see more of in this trailer are [TS]

elements that the George Lucas developed [TS]

for the Star Wars underworld TV series [TS]

that never happened and may never happen [TS]

in the in the form that it was [TS]

originally envisioned and I you know I i [TS]

like i like that we're getting to to [TS]

play with different toys in the set in a [TS]

in a live-action film way that we've [TS]

only seen in games like the force [TS]

unleashed or rogue squadron or knights [TS]

of the old republic or any of the the [TS]

various games that have honestly [TS]

sustained the star wars universe when [TS]

there have been those big gaps in movie [TS]

production i was actually referring to [TS]

the original Western games role-playing [TS]

game which was released on the 10th [TS]

anniversary of the original style was [TS]

way back in the day but that'll jog yeah [TS]

that's just me showing my age i was i'm [TS]

i'm literally return of the jedi years [TS]

old so I'm i apologize for my ignorance [TS]

babes babes all of you i made the joke [TS]

at the beginning about star wars [TS]

galaxies in part because this this [TS]

trailer actually sort of evokes a bit of [TS]

that feeling of as you said Anthony you [TS]

know what's happening in the rest of the [TS]

world and the this this trailer actually [TS]

has me I I am genuinely more excited and [TS]

I loved force awakens but I'm genuinely [TS]

more excited about this trailer and the [TS]

only thing that I can put my finger on [TS]

why that is because that seems so wrong [TS]

you know this is this is this is slotted [TS]

in the continuity force awakens was new [TS]

story and yet up when I was seeing force [TS]

awakens trailers I was wondering how JJ [TS]

Abrams was going to screw it up this act [TS]

this has to fit into the canyon that was [TS]

established by 26 movies and clone wars [TS]

not the rest of the expanded universe [TS]

and all this other stuff although we [TS]

actually have a clone wars character [TS]

that appears in this movie but there's a [TS]

certain amount of this feels comfortable [TS]

this feels familiar these are the [TS]

stormtroopers that I that look the most [TS]

like they did back then most of them [TS]

this feels like it fits in to the past [TS]

so it's it's really scratching [TS]

scratching that nostalgia itch that Liz [TS]

was talking about I'm a little [TS]

embarrassed about it myself though [TS]

because I shouldn't I be excited about [TS]

the newness the fact that this is a war [TS]

movie set in the star wars universe that [TS]

should look so different and yet there's [TS]

so much of it that looks so familiar [TS]

right doesn't look different at all yeah [TS]

  i think there's also i think you've [TS]

touched on something that I i I've only [TS]

just sort of reeling herself but at your [TS]

right the one of the one of the things [TS]

running up to the force awakens was that [TS]

none of us knew whether it would be any [TS]

good and we were all sort of bracing [TS]

ourselves here just in case it was [TS]

terrible you know and now we know it was [TS]

good we know we enjoyed it and so I [TS]

think we're all a bit more relaxed and [TS]

so when not what we're watching these [TS]

traders with a different mindset because [TS]

we watch those trailers going ok this [TS]

trailer looks good but it could still be [TS]

terrible and ruin my childhood all over [TS]

  again [TS]

whereas this trailer we're looking at it [TS]

and going ok this trailer looks good and [TS]

they've already done it right once so [TS]

they're probably gonna do it right again [TS]

you know I think we've just got a bit [TS]

more faith and confidence in them [TS]

yeah and i think one of the main things [TS]

for me the iphones disc well there is [TS]

that there's a whole list obviously but [TS]

there's one of the most disconcerting [TS]

things about the the second trilogy was [TS]

the everything looked so clean and [TS]

changing and unreal but we know from the [TS]

trailer that's not the case here I mean [TS]

one of the things I absolutely love with [TS]

her every character looks as we've been [TS]

pretty messed up and we got like either [TS]

modern face or their hair was my stop my [TS]

okay we still cool but that was like our [TS]

  that's so great [TS]

the only people who know something in a [TS]

Mon Mothma and the Imperials are [TS]

basically yes she's like the only person [TS]

that he's keeping his which spine [TS]

because she's like behind the lines but [TS]

all these people out fighting the actual [TS]

work so they're not fighting it's not [TS]

like you're living in magic cgi world [TS]

that you expect me to believe and why [TS]

are you making me cry movie why I you [TS]

know the the thing that I immediately [TS]

want to jump in with is just the [TS]

presence of donnie yen one of my [TS]

favorite martial arts performers and a [TS]

cinema history having him in this you [TS]

know that I'm of two minds on the one [TS]

hand i don't know if any of these [TS]

characters are going to survive at the [TS]

same time you know how in what capacity [TS]

when they show up the 30 years later [TS]

that we could see them in the saga films [TS]

but yen's character in particular i'm [TS]

thinking i mean wouldn't want to be [TS]

great to just apply some old age makeup [TS]

and and grading to the hair and and have [TS]

him show up in episode 8 or 9 right [TS]

because what why would you just using in [TS]

  11 off [TS]

movie will be you could say the same [TS]

about most of the cast in this I mean [TS]

this is a really really good cars you [TS]

know for exactly just on a yen it's it's [TS]

a really good cast so you could say that [TS]

about all of them I yeah that that's [TS]

that's exactly where i'm coming from is [TS]

is you know I started with the end and [TS]

then I started thinking about basically [TS]

everyone else and i haven't even seen [TS]

the movie yet and the franchise's [TS]

effectively quote-unquote sold me on the [TS]

toys where I just I want I want you know [TS]

the these are all characters and I want [TS]

more than one movie of of story out of [TS]

them and if it's just one movie and we [TS]

get some great story out of him that's [TS]

great if they do more things with with [TS]

animation that use these characters that [TS]

be great of course we have a character [TS]

that that started in animation in in [TS]

sagar era played by Forest Whitaker this [TS]

this movie is selling me more and more [TS]

and more on the very intentional [TS]

expansion of the universe all around [TS]

where I don't feel like this is some [TS]

some add-on that I guess I could watch [TS]

if I want as a star wars fan it feels as [TS]

compulsory is the saga films for me [TS]

where I want to see these other corners [TS]

of the universe that you know they're [TS]

there isn't there isn't time or capital [TS]

for to spend in the photographer in the [TS]

  saga movies [TS]

one of the things I love about star wars [TS]

that I've always loved about Star Wars [TS]

is that along with along with alien [TS]

actually and blade runner to an extent a [TS]

really cemented my lifelong love of the [TS]

lived in sci-fi look I have always and i [TS]

blame this entirely on Star Wars i have [TS]

always had real trouble with sort of [TS]

shiny Gernsback in science fiction you [TS]

know the sort of old-school Buck Rogers [TS]

stuff where everything's rocket fins and [TS]

silver jumpsuits and yeah and these days [TS]

one of the reasons i don't mind scuffing [TS]

up my iPhone's because I feel like [TS]

it makes it more star wars like that it [TS]

looks like the motherfuckin that's got [TS]

some scrapes on but these trailers [TS]

messed up i think these trailers get [TS]

that across perfectly there is a shot [TS]

it's not in this trailer is in the [TS]

  teaser [TS]

there is a shot of gin generoso felicity [TS]

jones character the main character where [TS]

she's in she's leaning her head against [TS]

the window of like a transport of some [TS]

kind with like streaming in and there's [TS]

no context I mean you have no idea but [TS]

the way it's shot and the way the light [TS]

Falls it could be from like a [TS]

contemporary war film it could be a shot [TS]

of somebody going into Fallujah or [TS]

something you know the rebel base every [TS]

time we see it apart from the war rooms [TS]

it looks completely run down and half [TS]

derelict and I've always loved that [TS]

about Star Wars and they as they said [TS]

this prequels you know just looked [TS]

entirely i mean okay sure it was meant [TS]

to be a time of the high Republic [TS]

doesn't matter what even is excellent [TS]

that in the old republic the delightful [TS]

  game [TS]

it's aight manages to have that lived-in [TS]

feel Luke in parts of even the Republic [TS]

and some bets are quite shiny but the [TS]

but you know you can play a smuggler [TS]

you're on the good said you still get [TS]

your cool shape that looks awesome and [TS]

all mucky and stop this great and they [TS]

completely didn't get that with those [TS]

ones there and even the cartoon which is [TS]

my other favorite valve not the outside [TS]

the main continuously Star Wars and Star [TS]

Wars rebels I didn't really get into [TS]

course I'm still not seeing the whole of [TS]

it by keep meaning to because rebels [TS]

obviously falls on call Morrison takes [TS]

all that continuity with it and and it's [TS]

it's so good and it's set in the same [TS]

time period diseases just a few years [TS]

before the first movie so they're also [TS]

out there on the rim with a surviving [TS]

apprentice and and the rebel pilot and [TS]

smuggler pellet person and it's great [TS]

their ships terrible and it's yeah i [TS]

don't like that everything starship [TS]

should be falling to pieces of junk a [TS]

you came here in this you're braver than [TS]

i thought so let's let's start actually [TS]

going through the trailer then so we [TS]

start off with this shot of what we [TS]

start off with a piano version of the [TS]

imperial march which is very nice but [TS]

then we get a shot of [TS]

a city built on some kind of manmade [TS]

plateau on yet another desert planet lot [TS]

of desert plants its towers and these [TS]

massive enormous like metal walls built [TS]

up from the rocks surrounding the city [TS]

with Thai fighters and shuttles soaring [TS]

over it so we gonna presume it's an [TS]

imperial city again this is something we [TS]

haven't really seen yes we have ever had [TS]

cityscapes especially in the prequels [TS]

lots of cityscapes there but none of [TS]

them looked quite like this this looks [TS]

like a city that kind of grew up [TS]

organically organically if it was [TS]

created organically if it was created by [TS]

giant city growing plants from the mouth [TS]

  of hell [TS]

  I mean I get a bit of a I get a bit of a [TS]

anton furst gotham city vibe from it [TS]

oh yeah I could see that I could see [TS]

that yet and there's this enormous tower [TS]

at one end of it as well dwarfing [TS]

everything else which you know i'm going [TS]

to go ahead and presume that that's some [TS]

kind of a target for part of the mission [TS]

or you know that it's important at any [TS]

rate because it's so enormous [TS]

it's nice i like a star wars sticks with [TS]

subtle imagery and and meaning it's it's [TS]

very well here is such a darling next to [TS]

the no that's not it said subtleties [TS]

  never really been stalling [TS]

yeah Forte has it but you know that's a [TS]

good thing your advice i'm not [TS]

complaining i I'm very happy with it [TS]

it's all kind of old school divisions of [TS]

feet into that this is good this is evil [TS]

you'll get the kids well you know that [TS]

my little my little fact that people [TS]

have complained about that opening shot [TS]

having an upside-down death star in it [TS]

really speaks to Star Wars being [TS]

extremely you know this is this is this [TS]

is how things are supposed to look at [TS]

that's why I know that even though there [TS]

is no upside down in space rocks and [TS]

tell Donna and I understand that i had [TS]

the same reaction you know you look at [TS]

this first shot and I have to keep the [TS]

fanboy gene and check because we never [TS]

saw shuttles like those before right [TS]

you know you know what's good wit what [TS]

what do you mean you win I've never yes [TS]

it was the original star wars RPG [TS]

actually that taught me down is where [TS]

your feet are in space [TS]

yeah that's good yea though I i'm the [TS]

same the ship's if I didn't fly and star [TS]

wars x-wing computer game at nineteen [TS]

  nineties it doesn't exist [TS]

it's my head judgment call huh right [TS]

so--okay i actually would that answers [TS]

the question was gonna watch later about [TS]

the the rebel ship so it's going to be [TS]

doing is it okay so from this we get to [TS]

a very very short clip of june meeting [TS]

forest whitaker's character now did I [TS]

hit did you somebody say that this is a [TS]

  character from Clone Wars [TS]

yeah it showed up for maybe two three [TS]

episodes of clone wars back in the day [TS]

and is now a grizzled veteran i say i [TS]

  had no idea [TS]

okay well that's interesting because in [TS]

clone wars does he have big hair is he [TS]

  bowled a shorter hair [TS]

ok because it's sort of the head in the [TS]

teaser trailer here when first we could [TS]

turn up he was bold and he only had a [TS]

short beard and here he's got quite long [TS]

beard and lots of hair [TS]

I Anthony the magic of reissues happy [TS]

well i was gonna say so presumably [TS]

either this is just reshoots or you [TS]

presumably these parts of the two scenes [TS]

where we see that are far apart knees [TS]

you know shaved his hair off ready for [TS]

  action or something [TS]

I was wondering if we might get a sort [TS]

of Gandalf white wizard scenario there [TS]

but my don't know because i know nothing [TS]

about this character i didn't realize [TS]

that he was an existing character [TS]

yeah everybody who was a huge clothes [TS]

Clone Wars fan went completely bonkers [TS]

when they when they revealed what he [TS]

looked like they were like this is this [TS]

is and i had watched clone wars but bits [TS]

and pieces here and there and so I was [TS]

saying what what's what's the big deal [TS]

kids comedian I grandpa doesn't know [TS]

  what's happening [TS]

so what is the big deal it's that that [TS]

he was a character from clone wars that [TS]

was the first time they were they were [TS]

bringing forward something from one of [TS]

the animated series into the live action [TS]

series which they're there really hasn't [TS]

been especially in the in the case of a [TS]

person that that that wasn't directly [TS]

tied to clone wars interacting with the [TS]

prequels which I look it's General [TS]

Grievous during the same time period [TS]

that these movies are set this is a [TS]

  character from well before [TS]

when this movie is set that's being [TS]

brought into live action for the first [TS]

time and and that wasn't that wasn't [TS]

very loudly trumpeted as oh boy wait [TS]

till you see this guy for 12 seconds in [TS]

  episode 3 [TS]

yeah he was a he was a leader of and I [TS]

haven't seen the episodes in question [TS]

but he was a leader of the on Darren [TS]

rebels if i'm pronouncing it correctly [TS]

and helped lead the resistance movement [TS]

to victory over the you know the general [TS]

Grievous's group alongside jet the Jedi [TS]

ahsoka tano and Anakin Skywalker and [TS]

just I I get a little bit of a fanboy [TS]

shiver over that because we saw we saw [TS]

the last shot of the trailer we saw [TS]

  Darth Vader here right [TS]

getting those two together might be fun [TS]

and uncomfortable regular Philip moser [TS]

like who wanted to be here today but [TS]

couldn't wants us to point out that he's [TS]

wearing what is effectively aveda [TS]

harmonica around his neck and we have no [TS]

idea what that means i mean is that part [TS]

of his armor on the show or does this [TS]

yeah it really does look quite similar [TS]

anyone has anybody seen the show i'm [TS]

looking at it doesn't i'm not sure about [TS]

your own buying it but alright well [TS]

aside from from people immediately being [TS]

furious that John Syracuse's and on this [TS]

recording will be furious that none of [TS]

us are huge Clone Wars fans so we we w [TS]

failed right user Star Wars trailer crew [TS]

clear it with all the ladies doing well [TS]

yeah forcefully but I'm glad I'm glad [TS]

that they're doing this if for no other [TS]

reason you know as much as the in the [TS]

extended you expanded universe partisans [TS]

just sort of drive me crazy you know we [TS]

did if you were an old-school star wars [TS]

fan you sort of did lose a certain sense [TS]

of connection and of continuity with all [TS]

that stuff being taken away [TS]

I it completely surprises and pleases me [TS]

that they would take a piece from clone [TS]

wars and put it in this very expensive [TS]

  very grown up movie [TS]

yeah they have we have done a lot for [TS]

clone wars so they obviously holder pray [TS]

high regard considering he's not just [TS]

moving here they have a holder holder [TS]

cartoon series that we're taking all of [TS]

the continued from clone wars and using [TS]

it and characters from it [TS]

  ongoing I mean so [TS]

katano turns up again in and rebels and [TS]

it's yeah it was a great cartoon from [TS]

what I've seen of it I haven't seen the [TS]

whole thing that is very good and ya [TS]

  know [TS]

well done more than the the notion of [TS]

saw Guerrera you know being a young [TS]

fresh-faced angry young man and being [TS]

the wizened by war now you know Haggard [TS]

veteran at this point even for people [TS]

who haven't seen the show i think is is [TS]

  interesting [TS]

not just because i think it all it'll [TS]

make people fire up their netflix [TS]

accounts and jump over to clone wars and [TS]

start binging through it but because it [TS]

really does lend that sense of broader [TS]

continuity to the overall series you [TS]

know that they've just announced that in [TS]

the next season of star wars rebels a [TS]

guy named throne is going to show up and [TS]

i know that many people not me who are [TS]

who are gigantic Grand Admiral Thrawn [TS]

thing i think i just recently there i [TS]

think i think we have one of them but [TS]

that was it we use that thing no star [TS]

wars started I I my star wars [TS]

constituency is the computer games [TS]

actually start adjusting the computer [TS]

games i would get very upset [TS]

luckily either i can just quietly ignore [TS]

anything contracts it and it I am NOT [TS]

haven't read any books or I've tried to [TS]

reach some i'm not i did not engage with [TS]

them terribly well why do you know who [TS]

throw it is and I i do O God help i do [TS]

play and an imperial intelligence agent [TS]

who's a chips and on your own computer [TS]

on a semi-regular basis so I have [TS]

thrilled if we get the chest turning off [TS]

in Star Wars rebels that'd be brilliant [TS]

yeah but no throwing himself is now is [TS]

now canonized in actual star wars [TS]

continuity which made a lot of people [TS]

  excited [TS]

those are little generally are the ones [TS]

who are saying well we're gonna get Mara [TS]

Jade and she's gonna show up in episode [TS]

8 and they've been they've stealth cast [TS]

no it's not gonna happen [TS]

  they've they've officially said no we're [TS]

just not using Marge a period [TS]

Luke Skywalker didn't get married to a [TS]

sixth and Bob ok i'm just angry about [TS]

7,000 people where you know that the the [TS]

fact that there is this sense of broader [TS]

continuity of a of of the galaxy being a [TS]

big wide crazy place is something that I [TS]

feel as we continue to define the as [TS]

they call it Calvin timeline in the new [TS]

Star Trek films and as we grow out star [TS]

wars is something that will continue to [TS]

set Star Wars apart as a space thing [TS]

where the universe does not feel as Tiny [TS]

as it does with just the saga films [TS]

where we're just continuously orbiting [TS]

the Skywalker family and whatever rain [TS]

ends up being although able to to jump [TS]

the fringes I ate it feel it feels [TS]

pretty nice even though we're still [TS]

orbiting them with this movie [TS]

yeah i think that ties into why I'm a [TS]

part of the reason that this grabs me so [TS]

much is because I've ever the the [TS]

continuity that I most investment is [TS]

from 4,000 years ago and it's a huge [TS]

universe that you you you play in there [TS]

  and there's there's always a eight [TS]

different main storylines to play [TS]

through and it and and so to get [TS]

something of that going back and not [TS]

just about this tiny group of people and [TS]

this one family is is marvelous [TS]

it is and what we keep talking about the [TS]

sort of wide universe expanding [TS]

everything and yet they seem once again [TS]

seems to take place on a desert planet [TS]

now presumably it's the same different [TS]

planet I don't know but there are an [TS]

awful lot of desert planet in this [TS]

nothing wrong with desert planet x as a [TS]

big fan of june i love it whenever a [TS]

desert plants throws up inside section [TS]

it's great again I mean I get two weeks [TS]

and work joke we like people as a half [TS]

the galaxy looks like northern tunisia [TS]

ferret out that seems pretty likely to [TS]

be well in the same way that it seems [TS]

all three star trek movies have to have [TS]

a scene in a place that resembles dubai [TS]

that's true yes i'm ok so moving on from [TS]

there we cut back to that city on the [TS]

plateau but now we pan up and we see an [TS]

  enormous Star Destroyer hovering [TS]

overhead and we can see that huge tower [TS]

in funny kind of reaches up and I was a [TS]

refueling spotted something that really [TS]

inches up to the light the middle of the [TS]

Star Destroyer but that's an interesting [TS]

one as well this this idea that I'm [TS]

presumably this whole city for these an [TS]

imperial city or if it's under the [TS]

Imperial thumb don't know obviously it's [TS]

impossible to tell but it's a beautiful [TS]

image and subtle I like something else I [TS]

i also did a tidy little tier every time [TS]

you started story comes on straight game [TS]

because they're the coolest Star Wars [TS]

ships that was it that was the that was [TS]

the sit up and take notice moment of the [TS]

force awakens trailer with the crash [TS]

started absolutely yeah yeah people who [TS]

want an x-wing those people are fools [TS]

I want to start destroying nothing but [TS]

this one was oh and so they can just [TS]

park a Star Destroyer over a planet's [TS]

surface not in orbit just you know [TS]

hovering right just hanging out actually [TS]

thinking about it because you're at the [TS]

the the crash star destroyer and the [TS]

x-wings flying through atmosphere over [TS]

the lake with the two things in the [TS]

force awakens trailer that made me [TS]

  really made me go [TS]

all ok interesting and but that was the [TS]

first time I think we'd ever seen [TS]

x-wings really sort of you know flying [TS]

properly and actually entering combat [TS]

inside a planet's atmosphere and I think [TS]

this might be the time that we've seen a [TS]

Star Destroyer flying in atmosphere yes [TS]

we send them crashed on our planet but I [TS]

don't think we've ever seen them [TS]

actually flying in atmosphere before now [TS]

it violates every law of physics but it [TS]

sure looks looks imposing as hell yeah [TS]

Star Wars it violates every law of [TS]

physics it's pretty much the tagline [TS]

isn't it say Imperial flags rain across [TS]

  the galaxy [TS]

the world is coming undone according to [TS]

forrester his character and and then [TS]

here's our protagonist our heroine who [TS]

is going to presumably save the day and [TS]

you know put it all back together as [TS]

  gene into the rebellion [TS]

now this is a repeat of a shot that we [TS]

had in the teaser where we behind her [TS]

entering the sort of rebel war room but [TS]

one thing that didn't strike me as much [TS]

I don't think watching the teaser but [TS]

  really did here [TS]

apart from the fact that it's the only [TS]

part of the Rebel ways that looks clean [TS]

is how much this is riffing on the [TS]

escape from new york idea of she's [TS]

clearly you know about to be sent off to [TS]

some prison planet on the outer rim for [TS]

the rest of her life and instead they're [TS]

saying okay but if you do this but you [TS]

know presumably suicidal mission for us [TS]

then we'll let you off [TS]

  yeah I like that she's she's not a [TS]

clean-cut you know an aristocrat or so [TS]

she's not she's not a princess leia type [TS]

you know Princess Leia and other clothes [TS]

  there's something dangerous there's [TS]

something uncontrollable about her i [TS]

like that we have that sense of mystery [TS]

about about ginger so at this point and [TS]

presumably as we as we will in the movie [TS]

the the the speaking lines from do Lunas [TS]

character immediately you know bring up [TS]

a thought that only becomes more [TS]

pronounced as we continue through the [TS]

trailer in that this star wars universe [TS]

isn't afraid to have people of color who [TS]

aren't under latex masks or whose [TS]

accents aren't being used as the nat and [TS]

the the native voices of alien races [TS]

  which is nice [TS]

it's a you know it's it's nice to to see [TS]

that non white Anglo American or English [TS]

characters aren't the norm of humans [TS]

right and 8 english and american english [TS]

of the only accents that you'll hear in [TS]

exact dollars units yeah the the planet [TS]

itself at this point the you know the [TS]

  the name [TS]

I don't know if mentioning the name of [TS]

the planet is a spoiler depending on how [TS]

sensitive people are but the the [TS]

director has been talking about it [TS]

they've been spreading about the planet [TS]

the desert looking planet is apparently [TS]

called jetta and the the thing the thing [TS]

  that I find interesting [TS]

going into this is that it seems like [TS]

this this is a place that was definitely [TS]

not as it hasn't been occupied by the [TS]

Empire for long and there's something [TS]

very specific about having to get in [TS]

there to either get something stop [TS]

something whether whether the only [TS]

MacGuffin in the movie is the Death Star [TS]

plans or if there's something else going [TS]

on if there is some lbma sector [TS]

communities over here yeah I i mean i [TS]

would love it if there were multiple [TS]

things this team has to surmount things [TS]

that even as well as we think we know [TS]

the original trilogy things that this [TS]

group was responsible for doing that [TS]

with it were not even aware of those [TS]

kinds of mysteries on i'm very very [TS]

happier are locked inside this mystery [TS]

box that that they are they are sending [TS]

a wanted criminal after and despite [TS]

rumors that are out there and stuff that [TS]

I don't want to get into because it [TS]

might be a spoiler might not [TS]

yeah let's try and stay fairly spoiler [TS]

less you know just stick to what [TS]

  actually in the trailers [TS]

I love ya i like i like that the extent [TS]

of what we know about dinner so is that [TS]

she is she's very much this snake [TS]

plissken type which is great for a [TS]

female character in star wars or any [TS]

genre media franchise that she is [TS]

dangerous she is not necessarily to be [TS]

trusted and nobody nobody can be one [TS]

hundred percent sure that she is that [TS]

she is going to you know stick to her [TS]

word because she is known to be [TS]

untrustworthy i like that i like a bell [TS]

ginger she repels indeed yeah I a group [TS]

that part of the appeal free definitely [TS]

with what if so the first try was like [TS]

  huh [TS]

there's a woman's story hit again great [TS]

that's a tool star wars movies which em [TS]

well in that mean that's that's [TS]

tremendously exciting and I do [TS]

appreciate that she's playing very much [TS]

a a rogue archetype as well and i guess [TS]

i guess the only thing I've been [TS]

frustrating is I i love that we get we [TS]

do get a briefing with her with mon [TS]

mothma but everyone else he's in the top [TS]

the cast list here is a guy here there's [TS]

like eight guys before there's another [TS]

woman and it's just really really Star [TS]

Wars can't can we have a few more you [TS]

know maybe gap two-thirds of the cast [TS]

maybe that'd be great that'd be fine and [TS]

then then you know you can try and [TS]

harder next time that that depresses me [TS]

a little bit i agree completely but I am [TS]

get terrible looking forward to to find [TS]

out more about her and enter car drive [TS]

over I loved everything I've seen about [TS]

by the action so far especially looked [TS]

her up and this unfortunately again [TS]

because you're in the wrong country will [TS]

  be nice [TS]

that she was in a children's show i [TS]

watch when I was growing up where she [TS]

played a character called Ethel hello in [TS]

the works which and which was sort of [TS]

like Harry Potter for girls but not [TS]

quite as popular and and and she was [TS]

delightful shots she was also in the [TS]

BBC's version a few years ago of [TS]

Northanger Abbey and then she was [TS]

fantastic in that because that's a [TS]

difficult role to pull off its difficult [TS]

story to film full stop [TS]

but it's a difficult role to pull off [TS]

and she did I magnificently I envy [TS]

people who are discovering felicity [TS]

jones through this movie because she's [TS]

she really has quite a significant [TS]

resume for someone you know to make it [TS]

make age of thing but but of her [TS]

comparatively youthful age she's really [TS]

done some amazing work and not just [TS]

limited to the theory of everything [TS]

where she's fantastic and for me I I I [TS]

almost you know Faye yes Eddie [TS]

redmayne's great need deserved award and [TS]

all that kind of stuff but she was [TS]

fantastic in that film and much more [TS]

interesting go to watch there's a whole [TS]

lot going but going on behind the eyes [TS]

in ways that actors of our generation [TS]

it doesn't seem there is that kind of [TS]

training you know there's not that level [TS]

of chops that that so many of them have [TS]

she is she's rarely gifted I when when [TS]

it comes to actors of the modern age [TS]

that there are playing the you know [TS]

young youthful lead characters and [TS]

things that is actually that's another [TS]

thing i was absolutely thrilled when i [TS]

found out about it was and yes she is [TS]

relatively young but in Hollywood terms [TS]

she's not she's in her early thirties [TS]

she's in fact older than I am which is [TS]

absolutely sterling and that's that's [TS]

something that is not nearly enough [TS]

movies i mean the the number of space [TS]

movies I get to watch where I've got [TS]

there's a female lead who wasn't younger [TS]

than me at the time when they are [TS]

starring in it it's good i can I don't [TS]

  know any others [TS]

countable one home too yeah so I that's [TS]

another thing that yes early thirties [TS]

isn't exactly old but it's still like [TS]

she's not some not 23 yeah he's doing it [TS]

  or she's not [TS]

yeah she's not 72 or 17 like Kyle's look [TS]

Skywalker supposed to be exactly [TS]

and yes that's and she also she also has [TS]

as this character anyway loads of [TS]

  swagger [TS]

that's the other thing is i like she's [TS]

got yes she may be surrounded by seven [TS]

big burly guys but frankly she has got [TS]

more swagger than any of them just the [TS]

way she walks around he is just [TS]

phenomenal like she is a female han Solo [TS]

and i don't mean that sort of diminish [TS]

her character but you know she's got [TS]

that same she projects that same kind of [TS]

outlaw devil-may-care attitude that we [TS]

all loved in hand solo so I'm really [TS]

looking forward to seeing her in this [TS]

yes we do i tweeted a bit about this and [TS]

and their those there those notable [TS]

iconic gates in cinema history the very [TS]

specific you know John Wayne had a [TS]

particular walk val kilmer had a [TS]

particular walk playing Doc Holliday in [TS]

Tombstone and it's usually associated [TS]

with male characters in westerns in [TS]

particular because they have this kind [TS]

of gunslinger devil-may-care you know [TS]

bring it on kind of attitude and the way [TS]

that tumblr and twitter just exploded [TS]

after this trailer with just just gifts [TS]

of her walking right makes me think that [TS]

they may they just think misprinted the [TS]

name thus far in her name is actually [TS]

gift or so very good and one of the [TS]

things I'm impressed with as well is how [TS]

well they've managed to replicate the [TS]

feel of what the rebel war rooms were [TS]

like in the original trilogy like I [TS]

  haven't done a side-by-side comparison [TS]

and I'm sure that they're actually [TS]

probably quite modern in comparison but [TS]

they feel like to my sort of nostalgic [TS]

memories and then I'll a nostalgic you [TS]

know i do rewatch the original trilogy [TS]

fairly often but yeah they feel like the [TS]

war rooms of the original trilogy like [TS]

got absolutely right and i believe you [TS]

correct me if I'm wrong but I believe we [TS]

saw in the trailer there in the teaser [TS]

that at least some of this happens on [TS]

Yavin or at least it looks like the oven [TS]

for actually looks like the old temple [TS]

so there's out there is so much [TS]

attention to detail here in recapturing [TS]

the seventies with a month with with [TS]

modern technology that is just adorable [TS]

no other ya allah grats on the oven is [TS]

  that what it is [TS]

yeah and I am absolutely certain access [TS]

to the thing I respect most time looking [TS]

at in the trailer is the charts that are [TS]

almost certainly on Yavin 4 because in [TS]

the old republic you can buy player [TS]

housing on yeah haha oh I wanted to get [TS]

my temple to lick on the inside as much [TS]

like the Imperial pieces that good with [TS]

the decorations available this was my [TS]

second young above the prime market [TS]

prices these days or just keeps going on [TS]

Prairie actually it was shockingly up [TS]

there i think everybody but it's so [TS]

  pretty [TS]

oh do it but yeah yeah they want the III [TS]

judge by the the brickwork and the [TS]

values that there are seen in the [TS]

trailer 274 haha wow alright so a major [TS]

weapons test is imminent apparently and [TS]

the rebellion needs to know how to [TS]

destroy and that gives us this beautiful [TS]

reveal of a Star Destroyer with a sort [TS]

of stepped light reveal over the stages [TS]

leading up to the bridge which is just [TS]

to really emphasize its size and I think [TS]

  that looks wonderful [TS]

my only niggle about this shot is that [TS]

the starter story itself looks [TS]

incredibly bright and clean like it [TS]

looks like a model it doesn't it looks [TS]

like a nineteen seventies model and [TS]

that's where yeah that's where I think [TS]

that they may have gone a little too far [TS]

yeah I look at the I look at the I look [TS]

at the windows the windows on the Star [TS]

Destroyer and there and they are just [TS]

points of light as if you know you have [TS]

the light bulb on the inside right uh [TS]

kind of thing going on [TS]

I it is it is true what a Star Destroyer [TS]

is supposed to look like but it through [TS]

be a little bit yeah it's well in the [TS]

bridge as well the bridge area you know [TS]

that big sort of trapezoid shape where [TS]

the bridges is just the whole thing is [TS]

just every surface is white it looks [TS]

like an fx model that hasn't been [TS]

  painted yet [TS]

and only I think I British people get a [TS]

reference but you know like a model you [TS]

know playing kids and it just hasn't [TS]

  been yeah [TS]

I don't know it's there there could very [TS]

well be a weathering passed between that [TS]

before right before decent they have [TS]

they have a lot of budget shortfalls [TS]

  they're building a space station didn't [TS]

flirt take it and then we get and then [TS]

we get and then we get the the dish [TS]

going in just like in the teaser and oh [TS]

my yeah yeah I'll i love i love the [TS]

scale of it all and this I mean it's so [TS]

ridiculously just unrealistic it's such [TS]

a fantasy you know there's there's no [TS]

way to reconcile the sheer size and [TS]

engineering effort over the death star [TS]

with the amount of enormous vast amount [TS]

of resources you need for something like [TS]

it but it doesn't matter [TS]

yeah it's it's so ridiculous and opulent [TS]

and Eddie I just had a thought about the [TS]

White Star Destroyer maybe maybe I don't [TS]

know this is probably just mindless [TS]

speculation immediately get stashed away [TS]

but seeing Ben Mendelsohn in that all [TS]

white Caped imperial officer uniform [TS]

makes me think maybe this is a vanity [TS]

thing maybe that's been Mendelssohn's [TS]

star destroyer and he said I wanted [TS]

white how they won't give you a super [TS]

star destroyer but dammit i've got the [TS]

cleanest one mine is going to be [TS]

beautiful they should have made more [TS]

white you could be onto something that [TS]

you could i I would i love the notion of [TS]

of Star Wars villain that is that vain [TS]

because they all are so vain and so so [TS]

self concerned that that that would be [TS]

that would be a touch that I would [TS]

absolutely love that of course people [TS]

will say oh well they just have to come [TS]

up with a reason for it because it made [TS]

  people mad right [TS]

you know but I i would love it to be a [TS]

character note but I I you know maybe [TS]

mind my hopes are too high i do love the [TS]

dish seeing the death star with a hole [TS]

in its like we've seen an incomplete [TS]

death star but it had a dish and seeing [TS]

the dish going into the hole is it's [TS]

like just another example of how they [TS]

seem to delight in this movie especially [TS]

from what we're seeing in the trailers [TS]

of taking iconic vehicles people [TS]

characters places and showing them in a [TS]

new light and putting them into [TS]

different situations like of course that [TS]

you know the dishes going to go in [TS]

somehow but you just you never thought [TS]

about it before and here it's oh wow ok [TS]

yeah it's a huge piece of machinery that [TS]

needs to be slotted in the the thing [TS]

that brought to mind was in in the [TS]

expanding notion of Star Wars and [TS]

everything you know we're seeing a movie [TS]

that's literally about the team that [TS]

stole the Death Star plans is that [TS]

people have made jokes they made [TS]

references in movies of their own in [TS]

sketch comedy in web videos and that [TS]

kind of thing to the contractors who [TS]

built the Death Star and that right [TS]

he expanded universe movie that i know [TS]

and you know seeing a shot like that [TS]

makes me kind of wish it is is we we get [TS]

to see that the poor the poor jerks that [TS]

are building this Death Star and died on [TS]

board you know trying to feed their [TS]

  family [TS]

bye-bye effectively you know being a [TS]

builder you know all right jack [TS]

what are you doing honor I'm gonna go [TS]

back to tattooing I don't know you're [TS]

only one step away from like you know [TS]

trade disputes there they know how much [TS]

we're talking about this letter we're [TS]

talking about the working-class Anthony [TS]

the working class I just think about the [TS]

pure company that put in the their [TS]

contracts in order to to get the right [TS]

to build the death star being like yeah [TS]

we've made a it's also look at this Murr [TS]

a troll ridge and then a couple of weeks [TS]

  players Oh bollocks [TS]

that would be a fantastic case all right [TS]

thinking too much it again if this movie [TS]

it to us at night I don't farhat nigel [TS]

farage is the guy who put the deals [TS]

together and then he'd blown up if this [TS]

movie does it have some nameless [TS]

bureaucrat going with the lowest bidder [TS]

on that thermal exhaust port i'm just [TS]

  like--that's Boris that's almost [TS]

religiously what happened at religious [TS]

ago Zulus bit of 100 in and and and away [TS]

goes Boris I'm in two minds about [TS]

whether whether it would be good or bad [TS]

to have some throwaway scene with [TS]

somebody pointing out like you know [TS]

something about the exhaust ports are [TS]

not on the one hand it would be funny [TS]

but on the other it's kind of its such [TS]

it will be such fanservice that I just [TS]

and so kind of I don't know kitschy that [TS]

I'm not just saying maybe someone should [TS]

proton torpedo are now I'm just I'm you [TS]

know coming out of farcical and I'm just [TS]

not sure whether it might be better to [TS]

stay away from completely the only [TS]

people who would notice that our people [TS]

have watched Star Wars 2 off it you know [TS]

mostly the average view of us there [TS]

simon Pegg's cameo there's Simon [TS]

  thanksgiving right [TS]

oh ok so so after that lovely shot [TS]

estimate you see Jim and Captain Cassian [TS]

in the rebel hangar and he says if [TS]

you're really doing this I want to help [TS]

and yes now I know because I do wonder [TS]

what's with the cigarettes of course [TS]

it's you having for ok and we see this [TS]

ship taking off that I don't think we've [TS]

seen this in this next week in the [TS]

background but i don't think we've seen [TS]

this ship type before it's got sort of [TS]

x-wing style engines but no wings or [TS]

nose and some weird protrusions is from [TS]

the front side if they see you with [TS]

other this is a you wing and it's got [TS]

the front of a sort of prequel era [TS]

fighter you know after right after [TS]

  Hayden Christensen became Anakin [TS]

Skywalker and they left a little boy [TS]

gone and they went to those fighters [TS]

that had the little force headband [TS]

  thingy attached to them [TS]

it's almost like the the front end of [TS]

one of those shaved down a little bit [TS]

and then the back end of an x-wing [TS]

shoved into it and so I get I guess that [TS]

is when the midsection looks like a slow [TS]

  speed up [TS]

yeah a little bit or got kind of a [TS]

midway between the snowspeeder and [TS]

anyway right right yeah and this is [TS]

apparently this is a troop transport of [TS]

some kind because we see it again later [TS]

with people streaming out of the belly [TS]

so i assume that this is what they leave [TS]

it looks a bit like a pelican the troops [TS]

just maybe it's a should've called it [TS]

appealing and say they take off and then [TS]

we see them in the cockpit of this will [TS]

presumably of this ship but I don't know [TS]

see I think this is spliced together to [TS]

make us think that you know it's sort of [TS]

continuous I don't think it is I think [TS]

this is from a different part of the [TS]

  movie and [TS]

they've got spaceship like controls but [TS]

they could be on the ground it's really [TS]

hard to tell from you know what sort of [TS]

outside the window from the scenery [TS]

outside the window so i was wondering [TS]

maybe this is what SUV dashboards look [TS]

like in the star wars universe yet the [TS]

the the beauty of it is there seems to [TS]

be so much information that we're [TS]

getting and then so much of it that [TS]

could be from wildly disparate parts of [TS]

the movie right its shots that aren't [TS]

even in the final movie as they continue [TS]

to hone it and get into shape [TS]

you know something that's that has it [TS]

doesn't spoil things and and also I [TS]

think doesn't doesn't integrate the [TS]

director or contrary to what some people [TS]

would say is that they've brought in [TS]

tony gilroy the same screen writer and [TS]

editor to help continue shape shaping [TS]

the movie as they get toward release and [TS]

I think there's a certain amount of [TS]

  misinformation go here deliberate [TS]

misinformation a so this direction i [TS]

think what story would be a better way [TS]

  of putting it [TS]

why I think they bring in people like [TS]

tony gilroy on any movie of this scale [TS]

and scope it's just you don't always get [TS]

their name you don't always hear about [TS]

how their workout clothes yeah don't [TS]

hear from somebody who doesn't really [TS]

know what they're talking about that [TS]

this or that is in trouble I I think [TS]

Gareth Edwards is a phenomenally [TS]

talented director he has a great mind [TS]

and being the first person to take on [TS]

one of these films that takes place [TS]

outside of the song universe that is a [TS]

unique and it's a helluva responsibility [TS]

amount of responsibility yeah so I you [TS]

know if I were him as he seems to have [TS]

you know reported by better sources he's [TS]

been very welcoming of this of yes [TS]

please help yeah no I'm not concerned [TS]

about the reshoots and stuff at all i [TS]

just think this trailer and maybe even [TS]

the first teaser as well I think there [TS]

is a certain amount of misdirection [TS]

going on because there are clearly lots [TS]

all your spliced shots taken from [TS]

different parts of the movie some that [TS]

may not even make it to the Final Cut [TS]

you say with dialogue overlaid there's [TS]

lots of lots of very clever bits where [TS]

somebody opens their mouth and then when [TS]

you actually hear them speak the screens [TS]

already gone black so the line could be [TS]

from somewhere completely different in [TS]

  the movie [TS]

yeah I which happens with alternatives [TS]

you know at one and and the thing about [TS]

Gareth is his big breakout success that [TS]

got him on the map to do Godzilla was a [TS]

movie called monsters that was all about [TS]

  misdirection all about [TS]

you barely see how much if any of the [TS]

the real money shots of the movie in the [TS]

trailers and he was very very hands-on [TS]

with that he was very hands-on with [TS]

Godzilla even to the extent that you can [TS]

be a movie that throwing a huge say what [TS]

you will about the movie itself [TS]

he he is very very very much involved on [TS]

the marketing side of things and that's [TS]

why studios want him is that he's [TS]

thinking about what's being revealed [TS]

when how much information is getting [TS]

parceled out and I can see his hand in [TS]

this just as I could in the Godzilla [TS]

marketing as I could in the marketing [TS]

monsters in its limited release and roll [TS]

out when it came out now with seven [TS]

years ago Jesus I i think that they they [TS]

definitely got the right person for this [TS]

because i i'm i'm thrilled by what i can [TS]

tell is either misdirection or [TS]

intentionally just a a collage of [TS]

imagery and sound that is meant to give [TS]

me the field give me a taste of it but [TS]

not just throw the whole meal in front [TS]

of me all at once like so many movies [TS]

  market themselves these days [TS]

my hope is that what they're what [TS]

they're doing is selling gates as if [TS]

it's a straightforward you know get [TS]

recruited go somewhere steal the plans [TS]

escaped in a TIE fighter you know that's [TS]

pretty much the the movie they're [TS]

presenting the shredder and I'm hoping [TS]

that that's actually not the plot of the [TS]

movie at all that it's much more complex [TS]

than that but they obviously know that [TS]

they need to they can't sell the complex [TS]

plot because it would take too long to [TS]

explain so instead they're hitting those [TS]

beats and just sort of putting together [TS]

a trailer that will convince people of [TS]

the kind of movie it is without [TS]

necessarily being too precise about the [TS]

plot we're jumping ahead but i would [TS]

even argue with you about your tie [TS]

fighter research and I don't even know [TS]

if I saw that necessarily but we'll get [TS]

to that at the very end right yeah I'm [TS]

so back to gin and now we see her in the [TS]

market presumably of that city on the [TS]

desert planet think that's a fairly safe [TS]

assumption and this again is part of [TS]

this is a clip that we saw in the teaser [TS]

with the rebel x-wing pilots a prisoners [TS]

being so walk through the market in [TS]

high-tech handcuffs but we get a bit [TS]

extra which is confirmation that she [TS]

is there as well incognito and once [TS]

again without makeup or you know not [TS]

looking very glamorous but yeah it's you [TS]

know it's it's a bizarre in Tehran but [TS]

with Star Wars splatter all over it [TS]

I i think it was just thinking about [TS]

what you're saying about the UH a little [TS]

less revealing of the plot here and [TS]

really the entire trailer is it's more [TS]

interested in building tone and [TS]

atmosphere then actually saying anything [TS]

at all regarding deployed and this is [TS]

another shot that just reinforces that [TS]

with our and I really lovely one as well [TS]

I thought with it the bright orange [TS]

suits and it's the darkness and shadows [TS]

and grime of everything else around it [TS]

  and it's it's nice and it's it's [TS]

enticing and and I'm just trying to [TS]

figure out your way or therefore if it's [TS]

where I think it's hit the movie because [TS]

she's there she's walking around is has [TS]

been recruited by that point or is this [TS]

part of the thing that gets her in [TS]

trouble in the first place because she's [TS]

hiding i like what we've been we've [TS]

we've heard about the Empire taking [TS]

people prisoner and all that other stuff [TS]

but I don't know if in the saga films [TS]

proper we've actually seen rebel pilots [TS]

  in shackles [TS]

I don't know mean we've seen some of the [TS]

stuff we've heard of ever they were [TS]

being we marched off of the blockade [TS]

runner at the beginning of n yo but yeah [TS]

yeah but but we we haven't we haven't [TS]

seen the Empire in the process of [TS]

occupying i am a place you know it's [TS]

it's not it's not like we've seen the [TS]

Star Wars equivalent of the Nazis are [TS]

occupying France for example it that you [TS]

know that the actual act of it is [TS]

something that we we know in our [TS]

emotional history of the saga but wewe [TS]

haven't seen we haven't said this is not [TS]

the same stuff that we've seen a million [TS]

times before I mean really is quite [TS]

reassuring because there they are there [TS]

alive even and their hands presuming is [TS]

there going to be handed off did in some [TS]

form of law and order procedure that [TS]

will happen to them rather than just [TS]

picking a planet blowing the whole thing [TS]

up so their internal literally killed he [TS]

knows that they attempt to you know [TS]

that's at least going through a process [TS]

that someone has decided upon rather [TS]

  than [TS]

justjust your body really is it's a nice [TS]

high point for the Empire possibly if [TS]

they're kinda gentler and bucket i find [TS]

  your faith disturbing [TS]

are they diagnosed that i finded Steve [TS]

this sort of movie is you have to make [TS]

massive empires there in order to run [TS]

that you're going to need a huge massive [TS]

bureaucracy they seem to use a military [TS]

bureaucracy and so short like that [TS]

indicating you will do take prisoners [TS]

you know what happens the prisoners what [TS]

happens in dealing with the death star [TS]

has prison cells on it so I if they were [TS]

doing an ontology filled with the star [TS]

wars universe that was practically cater [TS]

to me it would be about the Lockhart [TS]

take the logistical issues raised by the [TS]

  fire god that's terrible [TS]

and yet tripped so this market by the [TS]

way is the same judging by the lighting [TS]

and one the background is the same kind [TS]

of environment where we had been [TS]

fighting the stormtroopers and the big [TS]

explosion in the teaser it's all let in [TS]

I did compare them and it's all it [TS]

exactly the same way so i'm guessing [TS]

that all takes place you know in this [TS]

same place not necessarily at the same [TS]

  time [TS]

yeah but it's a theory I and then we get [TS]

to one of my favorite [TS]

well actually and the mighty favorite [TS]

shot bit is a sort of call back to this [TS]

that comes later but a really unusual [TS]

shot which is an x-wing flying through a [TS]

storm through a rainstorm between these [TS]

really big upright stone columns really [TS]

unusual landscape this is something that [TS]

that a few shots later I think we get I [TS]

think we get enough information right [TS]

that's what I'm saying yeah it's the [TS]

same planet different areas different [TS]

lighting different setting and it's it's [TS]

where we get introduced to the the two [TS]

Chinese cinema megastars that I I again [TS]

envy people that are discovering Jung [TS]

when and donnie yen by way of Star Wars [TS]

movie because oh my god they have come [TS]

from movies to watch i'm not sure if it [TS]

  is the same atmosphere [TS]

so it cuts immediately to your base [TS]

malbis but i don't know whether it's [TS]

necessarily the same place and it could [TS]

be it's raining but you know rains are [TS]

more than one planet presumably in the [TS]

galaxy if the lighting color is similar [TS]

  to [TS]

  to [TS]

it is that's true that's true but yeah I [TS]

love again it's sort of taking familiar [TS]

things and putting them in unfamiliar [TS]

situations i love this you know [TS]

excellence flying at night we haven't [TS]

really seen much of that you know with [TS]

spotlights and stuff on them never [TS]

really seen that in other movies i think [TS]

the closest because pointed to start of [TS]

the force awakens it's still obscure [TS]

enough to the point that you know I i [TS]

may have not watched a high enough [TS]

resolution version of the trailer but I [TS]

couldn't even necessarily tell it was [TS]

  definitely an x-wing I don't know I'm [TS]

just wait could be agile yes yes it [TS]

could get that straight yeah but I I [TS]

like that I like that we're not being [TS]

shown everything in the clear light of [TS]

day just to see every single angle of of [TS]

what ILM has his post altogether they're [TS]

perfectly fine obscuring things and [TS]

dirty them up and and not just selling [TS]

the toy through a hero shot [TS]

yeah and and this is as you said this is [TS]

the you destroyed our home it with with [TS]

base melvis character played by young [TS]

when John when jungling is not only a a [TS]

major actor in in mainland China but [TS]

he's also a highly touted director he's [TS]

uh he's crossed the government more than [TS]

once and and gotten reprimanded and [TS]

rebuked and had his career curtailed but [TS]

you know keeps keeps coming back but in [TS]

particular he recently directed a movie [TS]

called let the bullets fly that co-stars [TS]

himself showing up at various other [TS]

people that is is is like a chinese kung [TS]

foo live-action Looney Tunes movie it's [TS]

ridiculous slap sticky and and full of [TS]

energy and fun and yeah he's he is one [TS]

of the most highly regarded directors in [TS]

China as well as you know classically [TS]

trained actors and and I i I'm thrilled [TS]

that this movie is going to radically [TS]

raise his profile the West he looks [TS]

pretty badass it must be said yeah he's [TS]

the guy is a beast in front of and [TS]

  behind the camera [TS]

he he is he's kind of the you know [TS]

grizzle guy in power armor with a big [TS]

  rifle but I i rely can't wait i i i [TS]

really really want to see doing some [TS]

hand-to-hand stuff because I know that [TS]

he is he is people okay he's not done [TS]

yet he's not gently but he is he is one [TS]

of the best on-screen live action [TS]

martial artists I've ever seen balancing [TS]

that with you know the acting and [TS]

choreography of everything we do see [TS]

Donnie yen's character beside him [TS]

briefly very very briefly in this thing [TS]

before we see stormtroopers getting [TS]

fired upon which i assume i think we're [TS]

meant to assume is part of the same [TS]

scene but once again it could actually [TS]

be from somewhere completely different [TS]

in the movie it's really hard to tell ya [TS]

I mean though the lighting match is good [TS]

for the close-up shot on him but again [TS]

we don't know exactly where it's [TS]

happening exactly when it's happening [TS]

whether this is our introduction of [TS]

characters and they join arrived squad [TS]

or if it's during whatever the heist [TS]

proper ends up actually being and there [TS]

is uh you only say this for a few [TS]

friends but there is also somebody in [TS]

silhouette in the foreground of that [TS]

scene where the stormtroopers being shot [TS]

  so I do [TS]

there are two people are actually [TS]

possibly 3 i'm looking at it right now [TS]

  she's a frame-by-frame so I'm wondering [TS]

if that could be you know gene in the [TS]

rebels sneaking in while the [TS]

  stormtroopers distracted or something [TS]

maybe but as and these two these two [TS]

join the team and maybe srs i'm i'm [TS]

looking at i/o nines gift filled post [TS]

i'm looking at every single moment of [TS]

the trailer in gif form in sequential [TS]

order and as I'm watching it [TS]

repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat [TS]

  yeah I'm I I think I see a second form i [TS]

distinctly see one but I i might see to [TS]

write and and then that moves onto at [TS]

once again next week flying over another [TS]

desert but because you know likes a [TS]

desert planet star wars but again with [TS]

lights SI x-wing once again it could [TS]

actually be the you the you wink [TS]

goodnight really hard to tell because [TS]

it's so sort of you know such a distance [TS]

shot but that I think because the I [TS]

think the engines are too far better [TS]

apart on both of those shots to be an [TS]

x-wing I think it's probably the Ewing [TS]

how that's a good point cause the x-wing [TS]

engines are actually really close to the [TS]

body army so yeah yeah and this is the [TS]

in-depth at this is the in-depth [TS]

  analysis that incomparable listeners [TS]

come it's obvious judgy that they're [TS]

having a you won't see you wait [TS]

it's not popping yeah it's not even a [TS]

  wing it's the nose [TS]

come on are you knows but then the that [TS]

cuts to the bit that everybody's been [TS]

talking about in this trailer first we [TS]

get the Stormtrooper tank rolling [TS]

through the desert city which again we [TS]

saw this in a slippery different form in [TS]

the teaser super-creepy blitz creek [TS]

that's the occupation right of Europe [TS]

and is there and a new kind of [TS]

stormtrooper armor and helmet presumably [TS]

for armored cavalry troops or something [TS]

they're the people driving the tank are [TS]

wearing yet different armor but that's [TS]

only on screen for just half a second [TS]

and then we get Donnie yen's character a [TS]

blind Jedi Knight by the looks of him [TS]

with that level on I fear nothing [TS]

all is as the force wills it which is [TS]

actually that's what if they were dead [TS]

well but that's not gonna that's a bit [TS]

of an upgrade isn't it from like the [TS]

force flows through some binds us and [TS]

lives in everything it's like hang on a [TS]

  second [TS]

now we're saying that the forces fate [TS]

  and destiny [TS]

  yeah it's I mean it's almost like he's a [TS]

force believer not a force-sensitive [TS]

person someone who believes I force but [TS]

isn't governed what he doesn't govern it [TS]

himself he doesn't have the force [TS]

sensitivity that others do but he [TS]

believes in it you know he's very much [TS]

the the you know the legends of the [TS]

stories that kind of thing we're [TS]

actually getting the you know believer [TS]

in an ancient religion type arising I [TS]

didn't understand he's going to turn out [TS]

to be some kind of fan├íticos I I hey [TS]

  you know what [TS]

fanatical force of you know combat is is [TS]

something that I i think we should keep [TS]

an eye on I you know many people are [TS]

telling me that it sits next great [TS]

danger facing us well Medical [TS]

midi-chlorians or no he's certainly is a [TS]

  badass he I'm sorry I'd I don't know [TS]

that word too many syllables it [TS]

yeah he does his last Saturday each [TS]

impression taking on the story was [TS]

clearly just sort of even when they're [TS]

all lying on the ground he's still [TS]

obviously sightless yeah walking the way [TS]

he talks too much about the forest [TS]

  anyone who lectures [TS]

about the forced like that especially in [TS]

the middle of the fight is one doomed to [TS]

  deserves to be doomed [TS]

I don't think he's doing it in the [TS]

middle of the fight to be fair but he [TS]

does it sort of as he goes in ready to [TS]

  fight [TS]

close enough that's not what I do like [TS]

the idea of a blind Jedi though how many [TS]

fears yeah we don't know [TS]

  actually there's a there's a species who [TS]

r 0 limit well forgotten the name [TS]

species that's terrible virus like but [TS]

there is there to our blind who can only [TS]

see things through the force so it's [TS]

very much established in verse i was [TS]

just thinking it's a nice callback to [TS]

the the training helmets on the falken [TS]

  in episode 4 [TS]

yeah I i like i like the disaster that [TS]

again you know beating the diversity [TS]

drum that we're seeing you know [TS]

non-white people in the star wars [TS]

universe and I'm sure that there will be [TS]

people who say oh well they're just [TS]

pandering they just want to do well in [TS]

China and they'll do well in China just [TS]

  by the angel [TS]

yeah yeah yeahs regardless I i love that [TS]

they are they are reaching out to some [TS]

of the some of the best cinnamon artists [TS]

in action cinema across the globe you [TS]

know in episode 7 we had some of the [TS]

  guys from the raid [TS]

unfortunately they were in head-to-toe [TS]

bodysuits and you had no idea what they [TS]

look like and they were called kanji [TS]

club for some bizarre reason but I you [TS]

know I i love that I love that we're [TS]

actually taking advantage of the fact [TS]

that this is the biggest franchise on [TS]

the planet and why don't we actually [TS]

involve the rest of humanity in it [TS]

yeah he also said that when a film is [TS]

almost all white people in it then who [TS]

are you pondering to accept a white [TS]

people and frankly everyone else [TS]

deserves their share of the pendrick [TS]

anyway yeah it's about time and I I just [TS]

hope you know you'll know that their [TS]

pandering if Donny and takes his shirt [TS]

  off [TS]

well the one thing I hope is that they [TS]

don't get too stereotypical like I you [TS]

  know [TS]

yes it's great having these Asian actors [TS]

in it but you know and yes of course [TS]

Tony when he done again is known as a [TS]

  martial arts actor [TS]

nevertheless i really hope that he's not [TS]

too much of a stereotypical you know why [TS]

  is asian-looking philosophical martial [TS]

arts n dude I don't have any kind of [TS]

comes off as a weirdo [TS]

worthy american idol is Right I decision [TS]

with the staff and i like that young [TS]

when is there is kind of counterbalance [TS]

where he is he's you know a grizzle dude [TS]

with dreadlocks on a gun who you [TS]

wouldn't stereotypically cast an Asian [TS]

  actor in that role [TS]

yeah I feel I feel like I feel like that [TS]

that's what when I heard they're putting [TS]

Donnie and I was like okay well i hope [TS]

Asian actors are not just karate man in [TS]

this thing that you know that we get we [TS]

get more representation than that and [TS]

then we're not when they actually [TS]

revealed what John one looks like i was [TS]

like oh ok this this is this is [TS]

different and I that I'm be [TS]

uncomfortable with this fantastic run [TS]

  run wild [TS]

I i was actually given some pause in [TS]

episode 7 where the guys from the raid [TS]

  these massively talented indonesian [TS]

martial artists were acting like you [TS]

were given were given a while they were [TS]

cannon fodder and they were given a a [TS]

weird George Lucas e type of name that [TS]

was incorporating asian words and [TS]

English izing them in in a way that felt [TS]

way too much like nute Gunray episode 1 [TS]

around that had me worried but but I've [TS]

had all of those concerns put to rest [TS]

with with just what we've seen so far [TS]

and I you know we barely seen any of [TS]

rosamma thus far but I'm hoping that he [TS]

has something to do more than I get you [TS]

know connect phone calls or something [TS]

whatever it is that he's doing if he's a [TS]

communications officer if he's a PI hey [TS]

you know there's nothing wrong with [TS]

connecting room calls her connected [TS]

phone calls and she's the best one [TS]

well I'm just saying that the other [TS]

accessories so why don't you think thats [TS]

alright at next scene is another one [TS]

that has had people in connections from [TS]

this trailer that is Jim meets k2s Oh or [TS]

is it k 2 so i'm not sure how people are [TS]

saying it the droid the rather tall [TS]

droid who says the captain says you are [TS]

a friend I will not kill you for the [TS]

post by r2 d cutting alan tudyk indeed [TS]

  and i I'm I'm affectionately referring [TS]

to him as k2 right because I I assume [TS]

  that's what they're what they're going [TS]

for ya in in the droid parlance kind of [TS]

ig-88 looking as well yeah I i love alan [TS]

tudyk as much as the next [TS]

I but I i would have been perfectly fine [TS]

if the murderer George been voiced by a [TS]

woman but that's just me right now lays [TS]

I I tell us who destroyed is reminds you [TS]

of a skating party said he was the [TS]

greatest star wars droid that there has [TS]

ever been and who is very Sarki and [TS]

doesn't like people and just wants to [TS]

kill everyone and so this duty was like [TS]

oh my god you're like a cookie you look [TS]

completely different you have the wrong [TS]

voice and your AC 47 he be saying that [TS]

sarcastically and with a great deal of [TS]

regret that he wasn't about to get to [TS]

commit murder but there was a definite [TS]

vibe here of what hit what is everyones [TS]

goddammit everyone's favorite star wars [TS]

droid if they've actually met him and [TS]

interact with him probably there are [TS]

some people who have done that and it's [TS]

not their favorite droid those people [TS]

are wrong i never even heard of it [TS]

because i haven't played notice the old [TS]

republic but yeah yeah yeah but you're [TS]

not the only person to me [TS]

ughhh yes well it is the worst just even [TS]

looking at the clips on youtube of [TS]

interactions with him for the walls or [TS]

if you're like me for all the stuff you [TS]

mix because you wanted to see all of [TS]

these lines and he is an Imperial Droid [TS]

by the looks of it he's got the imperial [TS]

star emblem on his shoulder and [TS]

presumably reprogrammed but yes that [TS]

sounds like on the the captain that he [TS]

refers to 1 presume if he's working for [TS]

jeans team he's he's working for the [TS]

actual rebel officer among them who I [TS]

assume is diego luna it is his name is [TS]

  Captain Cassiopeia [TS]

Oh captain Cassian captain Cassian [TS]

  and/or that's a song that's almost a a [TS]

weird CS lewis 'i kind of thing I want [TS]

to call in caspian sea SI SE him that he [TS]

is the captain given that he's in the [TS]

background of this scene between Kate [TS]

Oso and gin so yes I think it's [TS]

interesting that they didn't bother [TS]

painting over the Imperial symbols on [TS]

his shoulders again he is that seemed [TS]

  working in our guilty [TS]

yeah right they're going to use him for [TS]

an undercover mission or something maybe [TS]

yeah and so if you don't like the rebel [TS]

symbol and paint over that make it my [TS]

way a bit you think about [TS]

but yeah I mean that's a really good [TS]

line and everybody in a big laugh [TS]

everybody else that in the trailer but [TS]

then upside-down Death Star dunno [TS]

ok i'm looking at it now and i have to [TS]

say i am a little bit judging anyone [TS]

who's complaining about that one that [TS]

looks great and two it's not really [TS]

upset that it's just speaks you pdx [TS]

everyone gets out in space maybe it's [TS]

the secret maybe it's the dish at the [TS]

lower half of the death star that we [TS]

never saw because we're always looking [TS]

at the front dark side of the death haha [TS]

  exactly [TS]

or maybe it's us who are upside down on [TS]

  the Death Star [TS]

how very philosophical fries n you [TS]

should go and hang out with that blind [TS]

general the camera position will is in [TS]

space and in space there is no up there [TS]

is some time down his way if either way [TS]

I and a towering over a desert planet we [TS]

assume the same desert plants and we [TS]

immediately then see an eclipse over the [TS]

desert planet and I didn't actually [TS]

realize at first until i watch the [TS]

trailer again a couple of times that [TS]

we're looking at eclipse over that wall [TS]

city in the distance yet with that we're [TS]

making just our yeah yeah it did you [TS]

think the same thing I did when you saw [TS]

that which is why tell me why tell me [TS]

what it what you thought and then i'll [TS]

tell you if I'm if you're ready [TS]

did you think once you make it out about [TS]

all of my uh huh i thought the deck that [TS]

from people had 5 i'm not now i do I [TS]

  didn't actually I didn't actually go [TS]

  there [TS]

Oh what they clearly be honest you [TS]

everything everything is ripping off [TS]

Babylon 5 at this point no no they [TS]

clearly nicht heroes Tim cream got a [TS]

  little taste of this [TS]

yeah because Babylon 5 to first safe i [TS]

think me Bob were you so like super [TS]

scary ship crossing across the front of [TS]

the Sun from the planet because it was [TS]

you know that was a damn creepy and [TS]

  still at the time i I don't I don't [TS]

think can't think of anything prior to [TS]

that I could be wrong [TS]

  I don't know everything I don't think it [TS]

was in anything british sci-fi anyway [TS]

certainly hasn't done it but it's such a [TS]

alien image the idea seemed connected is [TS]

is although you have to wonder like the [TS]

calculations that go into you know some [TS]

poor navigators gonna go okay so you [TS]

want me to put us at exactly the right [TS]

distance from that planet so that when [TS]

we cross in front of the Sun it will [TS]

  cause an eclipse fine [TS]

  there's a special class you'll gradually [TS]

added right yeah that's right there's a [TS]

special a solution Imperials chase and [TS]

  we're there [TS]

no problem i will also accept the movie [TS]

where we get full-ride the mathematician [TS]

who has to be called a complicated cast [TS]

calculations so they can make the really [TS]

  cool scary eclipse [TS]

apparently yes there is a special class [TS]

at the Imperial Academy on intimidating [TS]

  through navigation [TS]

yeah I've got to be honest grandmother [TS]

for Johnston I could do it but not gonna [TS]

be happy about if I don't get memories [TS]

what's the difference is that supposedly [TS]

yorkshire thought it was that's exactly [TS]

how people in Yorkshire some to me ro [TS]

luxury you to hear people in Yorkshire [TS]

talk about things must be nice [TS]

watching miles all-star do my billy [TS]

connolly impersonation that's why that's [TS]

that's closed meeting you could make fun [TS]

of them all you like mystery you're in [TS]

edinboro one of the things that I do [TS]

notice in this clip however is that the [TS]

walled city is the only piece of [TS]

civilization that you can see on the [TS]

planet because you when the eclipse [TS]

starts obviously it's still fairly light [TS]

and you can see that there is it is the [TS]

only area of you know man-made built-up [TS]

civilization visible in the entire frame [TS]

and this is a really wide shot that's [TS]

  quite unusual [TS]

well I think it's perfectly normal site [TS]

i think when we go into the Stars we're [TS]

going to cover a whole bloody planet [TS]

ages but it's okay for one little bit [TS]

you don't some cool stuff there and then [TS]

on to the next whatever happens or the [TS]

general resources are whatever happened [TS]

to indigenous people anyway Imperial [TS]

dude and the siren sounds as gene says [TS]

every day they do scary scary been [TS]

  mental [TS]

some yeah does anybody know the name of [TS]

his character because i haven't actually [TS]

said director critic director Orson [TS]

  chronic rule [TS]

yeah I'm i find myself quite torn that [TS]

because on the one hand he looks pretty [TS]

cool and evil and he has a swirly cloak [TS]

which is kind of insecure [TS]

yes on the other hand he's basically [TS]

playing peter cushing gunman Tarkin and [TS]

that makes me think dressed like Grand [TS]

Admiral Thrawn I am I going to get a [TS]

gram of Tarkin reference in this movie [TS]

or a lovely picture of peter cushing [TS]

maybe sitting on someone's desk attack [TS]

tonight that's all I can for my babies [TS]

right lovey i love the idea of this guy [TS]

being resentful in the shadow of target [TS]

of being the guy who got second at the [TS]

academy next to next to target and is [TS]

working under the boot heel of guy he [TS]

despises I like that that's that's as it [TS]

  should be [TS]

his a get going sort of deep down the [TS]

wormhole of you know stars criminal on [TS]

criminology here as he enters to tie [TS]

pilots peel off to either side so I'm [TS]

wondering if that's either our heroes in [TS]

disguise or maybe they're just setting [TS]

up the idea that lots of people [TS]

wandering around the Death Star tintype [TS]

I'll armor because so that it blends in [TS]

because we didn't actually see that a [TS]

lot in the original trilogy that wasn't [TS]

over a lot of people in tyler on the [TS]

death star but maybe they're trying to [TS]

get the idea over here that actually yes [TS]

they're all over the place and so you [TS]

know you can blend in by wearing that [TS]

lovely black tie fighter ama it's a [TS]

theory again i want to know for all the [TS]

that all buttons on that blue and red [TS]

thing on his clock mean I like they're [TS]

writing their insignia and sort of you [TS]

know they're at least are criminals and [TS]

really not as good as target is what [TS]

they mean that's what i read what i saw [TS]

it that you know I wouldn't want to [TS]

cause cartoon show off like that he [TS]

didn't have a big giant insignia or if [TS]

you didn't historic significance in that [TS]

big question didn't even wear shoes [TS]

while shooting his scene was like Paris [TS]

  yeah your slippers [TS]

yeah he wore slippers and easy route [TS]

used he said you're going to shoot me [TS]

full body no I'm like what shoes then I [TS]

was something they were too small for [TS]

him about it my temp sad and you don't [TS]

want to meet Peter Cushing sad because [TS]

he's the biggest most famous person in [TS]

your movie because you want to make love [TS]

and they include elegance and that is [TS]

very tricky issue this December as if we [TS]

didn't know and this is where we get the [TS]

very nice reworking of the imperial [TS]

march again this time with a full [TS]

orchestra which was december we go to [TS]

the beach right right i was just [TS]

thinking about the music as well if you [TS]

listen again you'll notice that the as [TS]

they play through the clips here the [TS]

later bars of this reworked Imperial [TS]

March they work in some parts of the [TS]

main star wars-themed as well which is [TS]

really from a musical point of view i [TS]

think is really interesting i'm really [TS]

looking forward to the original [TS]

  soundtrack of this movie [TS]

yes I suppose anything like it's in them [TS]

this almost sounds like it's in a major [TS]

key it is your right exactly yeah it's [TS]

in a different it's a different key for [TS]

a star but he's also gets a major [TS]

  progression [TS]

it's a really you know sort of strange [TS]

unusual treatment for the imperial march [TS]

  but it sounds great [TS]

it's a new Boulder happier Empire for [TS]

anyway and this is right we get lots of [TS]

Clips here so we have the small rebel [TS]

ship with people leaking out of the [TS]

belly so you know maybe it's not that [TS]

small after all and then running [TS]

students sort of resembling the indoor [TS]

uniforms but now absolutely right right [TS]

and then they run along the beach and we [TS]

get old palm trees are other yeah [TS]

  another incompetent regular deviantart [TS]

who couldn't be interplanet says he now [TS]

wants to see a star wars holiday special [TS]

goes Hawaiian uh-oh solon oh yeah and [TS]

there are bodies of stormtroopers in the [TS]

water as well so this is clearly the [TS]

scene of you know a proper battle we and [TS]

it looks so cool with the x-wings flying [TS]

overhead as they're running into well [TS]

yep let this is the teaser poster that's [TS]

in cinemas all over the US depicts this [TS]

this beach setting and they I i'm i'm [TS]

not a fan of the graphic design of them [TS]

I feel like they could show off that [TS]

  setting [TS]

more interesting way but I mean it [TS]

really it looks pasted together in [TS]

Photoshop in ways that don't sell how [TS]

well it this this particular sequence [TS]

came off to me in the trailer with this [TS]

the one that this is the same setting in [TS]

the teaser trailer had the a tank's and [TS]

  it [TS]

yes and it doesn't yeah yeah alright [TS]

okay welcome back everyone likes to [TS]

  tease hi [TS]

alright death troopers in all black yes [TS]

oh it's so cool though yeah out and we [TS]

see a rebel ship on fire i think it's [TS]

the you wink actually talking about now [TS]

it's now that we can identify it by the [TS]

distance from the body to the engines I [TS]

think that's what it deserves from [TS]

philly name yeah and it's like blowing [TS]

  up on the beach [TS]

let me get the blind guy again the [TS]

Imperial 20 right and then we come back [TS]

to the the desert city and the city [TS]

Imperial tank shooting a building and [TS]

i'm guessing that this is the explosion [TS]

that we saw the teaser with games like [TS]

get a crunching away from or something [TS]

blows up in the desert with some amazing [TS]

stunts / cgi work for those poor [TS]

Stormtroopers they really do get flying [TS]

about like rag dolls tonight at the same [TS]

time you know we can we get a [TS]

continuation of what we saw in episode 7 [TS]

with stormtroopers that are actually a [TS]

lethal threat that don't seem to fire [TS]

guns that only hit nothing right [TS]

yeah they're more than cannon fodder oh [TS]

yeah what's that bad haha you are a [TS]

traditional is you saying they should be [TS]

cannon fodder data that's what they're [TS]

  there for [TS]

ok I'm father and licked their one of my [TS]

favorite guilty pleasure lines in a Star [TS]

Wars comic book was a Luke Skywalker say [TS]

boy if they ever made smart [TS]

stormtroopers I'd be in real trouble [TS]

every true I and then that cuts away to [TS]

a scene inside a dark shift maybe it's [TS]

that rebel transport we don't know with [TS]

k 2 s.o telling them the odds literally [TS]

telling them the odds that there is a [TS]

97.6 percent chance of failure HD 47 [TS]

does that is well sometimes just saying [TS]

although he usually wants to kill [TS]

someone at the same time i love how do [TS]

to the droid looks in that shot looks [TS]

  its subject [TS]

yeah yeah yeah yeah and i did and i love [TS]

you know you have you have a limited [TS]

range of responses when the droid tells [TS]

you the odds are and hot and Harrison [TS]

Ford took the never tell me the odds [TS]

line captain and Orson please [TS]

shrugs and says he means well and [TS]

glances over to another poor rebel who [TS]

apparently just didn't like hearing how [TS]

bad the odds were there are a tease [TS]

I mean this is again it could be a [TS]

splice we're not sure if he's actually [TS]

reacting to that line but yet I had the [TS]

same thing I was like I really was [TS]

expecting them to do and never tell me [TS]

  the odds [TS]

call back but yet instead just saying he [TS]

means well that's that actually made me [TS]

laugh that was cool very funny I thought [TS]

yeah I am imagining some backstory for [TS]

Hansel here for the reason he never once [TS]

here the odds because he had to go and [TS]

submissions with this guy like just by [TS]

the end of that he was just so sick of [TS]

it was like never again but not have you [TS]

made it is this also know [TS]

made me think about that han solo solo [TS]

movie that they have coming after [TS]

  episode 8 where I i wonder how I ok i'll [TS]

be with them explaining so many [TS]

signature lines of you never tell me the [TS]

odds right let's run you know blah blah [TS]

blah blah like Catholic Children's all [TS]

  over again [TS]

yes exactly oh this is why they call me [TS]

back with where you could get quite [TS]

tiresome couldn't i currently have [TS]

slightly more faith in them than that [TS]

they're not gonna do that they know [TS]

  better [TS]

this Meatwad get moving never been the [TS]

GAD people's never forget nowhere or [TS]

three good movies is the fourth one you [TS]

  have to worry about [TS]

that's the rules I'm in between those [TS]

two lines though however we do get [TS]

another few quick cuts of days and the [TS]

rebels running along the beach I we [TS]

really prominently sea basses vacuum [TS]

cleaner backpack case happy yes we [TS]

should i wonder if he's gonna bust some [TS]

ghosts or just go and clean somebody's [TS]

front room and we also see the the black [TS]

armored stormtroopers that we against or [TS]

in the teaser which may be things like [TS]

black for a tropical environment really [TS]

but you know maybe they're also trying [TS]

to put them in a really bad mood and [TS]

then we'll get one of these big [TS]

four-winged Imperial shuttles blowing up [TS]

in a very impressive explosion lots of [TS]

things flying around lots of CGI however [TS]

and this is the advantage of modern [TS]

technology if you look at the beginning [TS]

  of that shot [TS]

frame by frame and i can only assume [TS]

that there is still some post-production [TS]

to do because if you freeze frame it [TS]

the stormtroopers there are three [TS]

stormtroopers standing around the base [TS]

of it and from the waist up they look [TS]

great from the waist down [TS]

they appear to be wearing kilts bare [TS]

legs and sandals are you destroying my [TS]

suspension of disbelief that so either [TS]

their stuntman who haven't had their [TS]

legs cjd yet or they r cg models which i [TS]

think is more likely that just weren't [TS]

completed by the time this show they are [TS]

  stormtroopers on holiday [TS]

tiny who listen look I'm telling you man [TS]

haha yeah i i'm i'm very upset that you [TS]

would you denigrate the inclusion of [TS]

  Scotsmen in the store [TS]

yes for additional name their Imperial [TS]

sandal troopers so this asian guy or [TS]

agent looking guy anyway with goggles [TS]

and you know sort of what he's wearing [TS]

an imperial patch on his shoulder which [TS]

is one of the reasons why i wasn't sure [TS]

if he was actually in the ship with [TS]

cassia and the droid did you say you I [TS]

have no idea who that is that right [TS]

there is the uk's own reasons are mid [TS]

okay i don't know in the he he's in he's [TS]

in a wonderful movie called for lions [TS]

which features imagine a very very very [TS]

tiny roll yeah and that's most of the [TS]

reason that non-christmas fans know that [TS]

that before lines exists i haven't [TS]

stopped for line since it came out I [TS]

  didn't recognize him [TS]

  ya know he's a he's a fantastic actor [TS]

  he's a great rapper he's a he's a very [TS]

talented fellow and him him being barely [TS]

in this says to me maybe we don't meet [TS]

him but ways into the movie maybe you [TS]

know they they're holding back even more [TS]

with him than they are with others maybe [TS]

he's maybe he's an imperial that gets [TS]

recruited during the movie maybe he's [TS]

wearing the Imperial patch to go [TS]

incognito could be salvaged a right and [TS]

it could be a saboteur you know that [TS]

there's there's a lot of mystery to him [TS]

that is just left completely completely [TS]

vague my money is on incognito because [TS]

uh we saw gin in the teaser not in this [TS]

trailer wearing a Imperial tie pilot [TS]

uniform and things like that strike yes [TS]

that i really like that here there being [TS]

more than one British person and star [TS]

  wars movie isnot villain [TS]

yeah ya wanna come yeah and I you know I [TS]

wonder if reassignment is is going to [TS]

you know uses his native English accent [TS]

or or if he's or if he's going to you [TS]

  know effective [TS]

Pakistani accent or something but one [TS]

way or another I i love that there's a [TS]

there's a guy have you know Muslim [TS]

ancestry who's in Star Wars movie right [TS]

yes another non white guy yeah well and [TS]

there's the shot later it's not that's [TS]

gonna call it-- as yeah for diversity [TS]

but before then we get more x-wings on [TS]

the storm as it were and these are [TS]

definitely actually flying through the [TS]

rain at night through these stone [TS]

columns with again spotlights who new [TS]

x-wings had spotlights and they come out [TS]

of the columns guns blazing firing on [TS]

another Imperial shuttle lots of [TS]

Imperial shuttle is gonna blow up in [TS]

this movie and once again in this scene [TS]

if you look there is a silhouette of a [TS]

rebel wearing that very distinctive [TS]

headgear in the foreground as the [TS]

stormtroopers get blown up so once again [TS]

makes me wonder if it's a sort of [TS]

distracting maneuver or maybe a rescue [TS]

but I'm just love that shot the x-wings [TS]

flying through through the rain at night [TS]

between those columns just against [TS]

something we've never seen installers [TS]

move before but for no reason it looks [TS]

  amazing [TS]

when I we wouldn't of piloting an x-wing [TS]

fighter and bless the force awakens in [TS]

this movie for just taking the the [TS]

coolness of the x-wing fighter and just [TS]

continue looking ramping it up [TS]

yeah i think that in a video game that [TS]

we did desperately annoy me if I would [TS]

have been fighting the storm because [TS]

your vision would be impaired and [TS]

desperately irritating ways but watching [TS]

on the big screen on a movie entertain [TS]

when the special effects can handle it [TS]

looks super cool it's yeah that's very [TS]

nice like that a lot more spaceship [TS]

battles minutes of big storms please I [TS]

have a feeling we're gonna get quite a [TS]

few in this movie r1 that and then in [TS]

the next shot we cut to something else [TS]

that we haven't seen and that you know [TS]

yeah you can wonder entire strikes back [TS]

did they not have bazookas in a long [TS]

time ago right when they have their [TS]

laser swords and weapons of work [TS]

yeah okay phase 4 in the rocket launcher [TS]

at the ATA CT apart [TS]

only these are all terrain armored cargo [TS]

transports i'm reliably told by the [TS]

internet and this is on the beach with [TS]

palm trees on but yeah maybe like why [TS]

didn't you do that on Hoth do not have [TS]

missile maybe the ran out but maybe the [TS]

Empire needs all the missiles during a [TS]

big city death thing they're out of [TS]

season they hadn't harvested them yet [TS]

  very they're expensive they're a [TS]

rebellion they've got funding problems [TS]

you know missile transport got hijacked [TS]

by the Empire yeah smugglers are very [TS]

trustworthy people they probably took [TS]

all their money and their bazookas well [TS]

is this baseball buses you be you think [TS]

that's a knife this is a knife moment it [TS]

  could be yeah [TS]

yes he's not actually a i'm just looking [TS]

at it now on okay that separates the [TS]

vacuum cleaner on his back [TS]

I was just wondering thought maybe there [TS]

might be connected and it is worth [TS]

noting that because some people have [TS]

been calling this outgoing like oh [TS]

that's ridiculous it makes a mockery of [TS]

one-half and especially given that these [TS]

are supposed to be bigger than the way [TS]

I'm sorry with people people speaking [TS]

out the memory of hearts I know but he's [TS]

making all the people who died [TS]

I mean I've go of course i realize i say [TS]

that on a hundred minute podcast about [TS]

hundreds right yeah good stable but it [TS]

is worth noting that this is he makes a [TS]

pretty direct hit here and yet it [TS]

doesn't look at all as if the walkers in [TS]

any danger of actually being taken out [TS]

or being you know immobilized by it so [TS]

you know it's yes it's a bazooka but it [TS]

ain't gonna have shields up by halftime [TS]

anyway that would stop this occurs from [TS]

  working [TS]

no we just didn't see on-screen I could [TS]

have been lots of reasons don't matter [TS]

at all work together so everyone should [TS]

do don't don't expect the people who [TS]

make the film still the story work for [TS]

  you [TS]

yeah it was a surprise attack come on [TS]

shish yeah they're build your own [TS]

headcanon charge up that hill John [TS]

headcanon listen I will treat that is [TS]

kind of base malthus's headcanon isn't [TS]

  it haha yeah [TS]

build it and i'll shoot it and then to [TS]

gym again once again with forest [TS]

whitaker's character with the this is [TS]

our chance to make a real difference [TS]

line you know very heroic it doesn't [TS]

look like well it does look like it's [TS]

the same setting as the clip from the [TS]

very start the movie but he looks [TS]

slightly different again so I don't know [TS]

what's going on with these reshoots in [TS]

the post-production I'm not really not [TS]

sure but immediately cuts to a fantastic [TS]

like epic visual of the rebel ship [TS]

flying through like a storm of falling [TS]

stone as if there's been a huge eruption [TS]

of rocks or something I mean is it maybe [TS]

it's the city collapsing and I know [TS]

whoever whoever they had at ILM you know [TS]

own this shot deserves a deserves a [TS]

medal even more than jewbacca because [TS]

  this looks outstanding [TS]

it really doesn't what whatever kind of [TS]

destruction this is where maybe the [TS]

walled city is blown up maybe the upside [TS]

down death star decided to to fire off [TS]

its cannons and do something to this [TS]

planet though maybe not at full [TS]

operational capacity didn't destroy the [TS]

planet but maybe just made a big hole [TS]

possible you know that the question is [TS]

what is the Empire want out of that [TS]

plant you know they they aren't going to [TS]

expend resources just to capture a small [TS]

walled city of people on a rocky you [TS]

know monument valley looking planet [TS]

what is it about that point that they [TS]

want whether it's threatening something [TS]

whether it's getting a natural resource [TS]

where that unites it makes me makes me [TS]

wonder what any of the 17 million things [TS]

that could have led to that kind of a [TS]

  gorgeous beautiful devastating [TS]

destruction show every is a lovely shot [TS]

yeah and it goes to we you know we [TS]

quickly get show inside the ship of gin [TS]

Cassian is Cassian preps for Lightspeed [TS]

5-speed that that's actually when we get [TS]

the shot inside the ship that's my [TS]

favorite part of it because it's when [TS]

you see looking at jen and you can see [TS]

out the window the stuff pushing just [TS]

because that's something that we could [TS]

never have done 30 or 40 years ago [TS]

convincingly get you to know you just [TS]

  you [TS]

have a window there but now we can have [TS]

windows seven alright Darius the dirt it [TS]

  looks so cool [TS]

Rep endure any more dirt Gary oh and the [TS]

and the way her hair is flying around [TS]

here has been there there there's been [TS]

some stuff from the celebration of video [TS]

showing how much that they put on this [TS]

gimbal the set right on and and i think [TS]

they are literally getting shaken around [TS]

  in there [TS]

it certainly looks like it because [TS]

you're right her hair is all over the [TS]

place in this shot yet you do get a real [TS]

sense of loss of movement and momentum [TS]

and speaking of moments after the [TS]

hyperspace jump the very next shot is an [TS]

  out-of-control TIE fighter spinning [TS]

towards what I'm guessing is one of the [TS]

Imperial Walker cockpits because it's [TS]

sort of a long thin you know cockpit [TS]

window and just smashing into the bridge [TS]

and that's great where you going on all [TS]

die bury all figured out [TS]

cool i felt he only had one week left [TS]

  your retirement [TS]

yeah arrested p scary will miss you and [TS]

this is in because we've seen their [TS]

walkers on the beach but this is in the [TS]

middle of the rainstorm in the stone [TS]

columns as well you can see that out the [TS]

  window [TS]

yeah so we clearly get them you know you [TS]

get plenty of a tattoo or a TA CT bang [TS]

  for your buck [TS]

I gotta say that this trailer is is [TS]

really great for x-wing and tie fighter [TS]

and x-wing vs. TIE fighter nerds from [TS]

the nineties like myself you just get so [TS]

so much glorious ship born out of this [TS]

including the shot that we we go into [TS]

featuring the most iconic walk of the [TS]

trailer right yeah exactly this is I [TS]

mean this is the big iconic moment of [TS]

the trailer the next shot isn't it with [TS]

gin walking towards the camera wind [TS]

blowing walking out on a platform above [TS]

water in the reverse we then realize [TS]

that it's really high above the water as [TS]

a TIE fighter an original [TS]

old-school-style TIE fighter rises up to [TS]

  to face her [TS]

to meet ya shooter who knows yeah youyou [TS]

said maybe she escapes on it i love the [TS]

idea of her saying you know what a bum [TS]

leg I don't care she takes a running [TS]

leap at it jumps on its back and and [TS]

rips a hole in it or something [TS]

I just how's it going i want to see that [TS]

the amount of determination on her face [TS]

makes me the this shot by itself they [TS]

could have just said forget the whole [TS]

rest of the trailer to show me this and [TS]

I would be in line right now for a movie [TS]

that comes out three months from now [TS]

yeah but now I've got me expecting her [TS]

to go all slim pickins so yah yah oh wow [TS]

it really is just it's an amazing shot [TS]

and i think it that they really does it [TS]

really matter such a lot that that it's [TS]

a woman doing that because that we [TS]

normally in ninety percent of trailers [TS]

that would be a guy who was doing no no [TS]

I think your mother yeah oh yeah I'm [TS]

  trying to be generous [TS]

this is the calamity james shot this is [TS]

this is the calamity jane finally gets [TS]

her own movie that everybody sees lots [TS]

  of explosions [TS]

yeah and it's it's actually got it it's [TS]

only maybe in the past couple of years [TS]

where I really have felt that there has [TS]

been a decent amount of pan drag to me [TS]

that i get i get my mind I have jessica [TS]

jones and Supergirl and Captain Marvel's [TS]

getting a movie and Wonder Woman's [TS]

getting a movie and that and really I [TS]

wasn't until I was watching a fairly [TS]

concentrated amount of this stuff [TS]

together that I really realized my god [TS]

how good does it feel to be pandered to [TS]

like that and it feels like we just add [TS]

to simply due to some jerks on the [TS]

Internet of course it feels pretty good [TS]

to the rest of us yeah i mean that yeah [TS]

that reminds me that the thrill of [TS]

seeing the all four of the the woman who [TS]

  getting interviewed about Ghostbusters [TS]

house like wow this is amazing what is [TS]

it going to be like your little girl [TS]

that and you start to see this as me and [TS]

you have all these iconic figures that [TS]

are yours that you get your flight you [TS]

know that there's already Ghostbusters [TS]

cosplay at all the in a comic on [TS]

conventional and there since last year [TS]

the amount of little girls i personally [TS]

have seen in cosplay as ray is just [TS]

incredible there are so many are testing [TS]

the normal and women of all ages to yeah [TS]

  yeah [TS]

I mean did it looking back in the [TS]

nineties and I know that Gillian [TS]

Anderson had a intimacies talked about [TS]

interviews had a phenomenal effect on [TS]

the number of women who were going into [TS]

  science [TS]

I'm joining up trying to join up the FBI [TS]

and that's one woman and one rule you [TS]

and although one more roll one of my one [TS]

of my favorite things that I saw crop on [TS]

Twitter over the last couple of months [TS]

in the lead-up to Ghostbusters release [TS]

was a childhood teenagehood halloween [TS]

photo of kate mckinnon dressed as Scully [TS]

from the x-files yes all is like my [TS]

sister yet happen maybe she's away I [TS]

yeah that spilled it feels so good and [TS]

the fact that its appeal that we've also [TS]

got something like that where you have [TS]

to the second generation was one of that [TS]

one of the promises are you don't as [TS]

when you have you the figures that are [TS]

around at the moment in the present but [TS]

the ones who are 10 20 years old 10-2 [TS]

get forgotten or diminished and they [TS]

have to constantly reminded they don't [TS]

become a part of pop culture but is [TS]

there are some of the nineties like [TS]

Scully that have so there you've got [TS]

that foundation there that hasn't worn [TS]

away when it's time for the next [TS]

generation so you're sort of your [TS]

building on it which is really [TS]

phenomenal and to get to have another [TS]

star wars movie just after the last 14 [TS]

ok and both of them there is a severe [TS]

lack of gender parity but the lead to be [TS]

a woman and both of them and for the [TS]

books to feel very they didn't do you [TS]

don't feel it you feel very non [TS]

stereotypical the progress which is to [TS]

say this very few way I can think of a [TS]

better way that they're great hero [TS]

characters based on the trailers have [TS]

seen from this and great and it just it [TS]

feels so good watching them it's I think [TS]

it's wonderful that a that a woman is [TS]

running Lucasfilm now and that star wars [TS]

celebration in the UK few weeks ago and [TS]

they made a point of saying yeah okay [TS]

the Djinn toy is in the first wave not [TS]

as not immediately acknowledging the [TS]

where's ray thing of a week to be honest [TS]

alright we screwed that one up [TS]

you could have made all gigantic amount [TS]

of money if we had spun up the toy [TS]

factories we shouldn't have a we [TS]

shouldn't have been as hesitant [TS]

um I is that they very very force [TS]

forcefully said no yeah we're good here [TS]

we go here's the toy it's going to be [TS]

all over store shelves weeks before the [TS]

movies out you know I i hope that they [TS]

have the problem of of having to [TS]

  overproduce to counteract scalpers [TS]

because one of the things that the DC [TS]

superhero girls line is seen is the [TS]

harley quinn toy is exclusive to target [TS]

in the US and so if you go into a target [TS]

good luck finding one because there are [TS]

you know 55 year old men running stalls [TS]

comic conventions that are buying them [TS]

up and scalping them for three times the [TS]

price of comic cons because there's such [TS]

demand for them and they're just not [TS]

being produced enough enough quantities [TS]

that's something that I don't see there [TS]

being as big of a problem with when it [TS]

comes to star wars because kathleen [TS]

kennedy and has Barone star wars have [TS]

and disney have have the resources to [TS]

the resources and the foresight to make [TS]

sure that that isn't going to be a [TS]

  problem [TS]

I said yeah yeah iidon't inside to sit [TS]

next to a little ray my little bastard [TS]

had well and speaking of diversity the [TS]

next shot is you know Jen you get the [TS]

voice-over ginseng are you with me as [TS]

she approaches the TIE fighter and then [TS]

you cut to catch and saying all the way [TS]

and the group shot of the rebels on the [TS]

transport and this shot like merely by [TS]

having two asians one African and one [TS]

south asian it is already possibly the [TS]

most ethnically diverse single shot in [TS]

star wars history by a long shot [TS]

  it's probably you've you've actually got [TS]

a Hispanic person in the movie at all [TS]

and and i think i think that there have [TS]

been south asians there have been Asians [TS]

but I really AM am very strained to [TS]

think of a single person of hispanic [TS]

heritage in the entire star wars [TS]

live-action can't up until diego luna [TS]

  right [TS]

apart from this guy yeah yeah perfect [TS]

apart from this guy up and at this point [TS]

it's just it's it's staggering to me [TS]

that throughout wow ok Jimmy Smith's [TS]

Jimmy Smith so we actually saw its yeah [TS]

because i keep forgetting the prequels [TS]

  exist [TS]

i would i would be shot was originally [TS]

on twitter if I didn't mention jimmy [TS]

smits who is and we may need to take [TS]

this out but according to wikipedia [TS]

jimmy smits is actually in this movie as [TS]

well I don't know you're talking who [TS]

little organic I would bail organa be in [TS]

  this movie [TS]

well I didn't know that probably he's [TS]

like a cult months of my god has going [TS]

no go out Bail Organa darth vader i mean [TS]

i wouldn't use those boiling in this [TS]

movie we're just getting there you have [TS]

  to spoil things [TS]

who's gonna save Robbie I was just [TS]

asking why would somebody like that me [TS]

know you don't hear me know haha alright [TS]

so the rebel the rebel ship the ramp [TS]

closes and we had a little half-smile [TS]

from gym just to you know and then fade [TS]

  to black [TS]

the end but it's not oh no it's not the [TS]

end because we get the rear shot of [TS]

Darth Vader's helmet in front of the [TS]

Death Star targeting screen looks like [TS]

that's not the death star targeting [TS]

screen he's reading the Gallifrey and [TS]

language haha very good very good at [TS]

their girlfriend I barely know and the [TS]

breath you know the sound I guess that's [TS]

all you need really isn't it that's all [TS]

  I need [TS]

they were to go to ensure that their [TS]

armor is shined well it was very shining [TS]

they were very lucky with their whole [TS]

design of Darth Vader that it just so [TS]

happens that over a quarter century [TS]

later they can relate the actual proper [TS]

person to do the actual proper voice and [TS]

make it sound and Luke exactly as it [TS]

should be right although I must admit I [TS]

am a little surprised because apparently [TS]

james earl jones is returning for this [TS]

and i'm told the or you know by the [TS]

internet anyway that it's a very small [TS]

is very much a cameo yeah it does feel [TS]

like it should be right i don't i agree [TS]

but I think it's a bit of a mistake to [TS]

will James Earl Jones again because this [TS]

is not the last movie that we're going [TS]

to see vedran I mean let's let's face it [TS]

you know he's gonna pop up again in a [TS]

number of days unhappy movies so he's [TS]

  dead now [TS]

he's known in the and I'm ecology movies [TS]

i'm talking about yes I'll never scenic [TS]

but there they are now and there's [TS]

  there's a there's a there's a big span [TS]

of time between the Empire Strikes Back [TS]

and Return of the Jedi during which [TS]

countless adventures like that of dash [TS]

Rendar couldn't write and the extended [TS]

universe is already you know already [TS]

spent the last 25 years filling in every [TS]

micro second of that gap and now they're [TS]

free to do it all over again they are [TS]

gonna need even so being an impression [TS]

is eventually sooner or later they are [TS]

going to have to get a voice impressions [TS]

are you saying rather guesses they'll [TS]

get tay zonday the the Chocolate Rain go [TS]

he does a great James Earl but that's my [TS]

point was like why nice start [TS]

why not do that now why not start with [TS]

this new movie the new style of movies [TS]

just smoking jordans would be [TS]

horrendously upset I why would you upset [TS]

you know you like saying and Anthony [TS]

Daniels once you know once once his [TS]

quote let's pay somebody half as much [TS]

and not get any Daniels yeah that's so [TS]

rude in Anthony's Defense yeah james [TS]

earl jones is providing the voice of [TS]

darth vader in the Star Wars rebels [TS]

animated series now you through not the [TS]

andrew sigh and he doesn't quite right [TS]

he sound anger I owe you you ages you [TS]

person you you can i how do you say yes [TS]

the James only is affected by the [TS]

passage of time how day is that display [TS]

that shocking i think he was absolutely [TS]

wonderful i just when you call star was [TS]

thinking just feel like especially [TS]

something like this when you're so close [TS]

to that thing not to have a little sort [TS]

of glimpse of a dar just feel like [TS]

you've been maybe a little bit cheated [TS]

somehow but you just give them that [TS]

little taste and then people generally [TS]

happy that people think it's a bad idea [TS]

they're not too pissed off because it [TS]

was only a little bit and it felt like [TS]

bit like that in Star Wars rebels which [TS]

is taking place even just a little bit [TS]

earlier than this where but Darth [TS]

Vader's gonna be this absolutely [TS]

terrifying figure because Darth Vader [TS]

ever went to school with our little [TS]

group of rebels there then surely they [TS]

would all be white tied at which is [TS]

exactly what happens they are just [TS]

useless when Darth Vader turns up clears [TS]

them up and basically all we can do is [TS]

  wrong [TS]

very very fast and it just it just [TS]

oh I don't know it just feels like he [TS]

should be there just for a moment or two [TS]

yeah absolutely dishes you also do ms [TS]

immortal he must he must be caught part [TS]

of the fabric can maybe maybe you can [TS]

get him to record quite law of Darth [TS]

Vader ish lines not and then just be [TS]

  easier and lights [TS]

I'm sorry that's even more rebels will [TS]

not defeat that's even more than just [TS]

finding a voice impressions that I die [TS]

so now let's let's speculate for a [TS]

moment on just what Vader might be doing [TS]

in this movie the marvel comics that are [TS]

currently being produced our cannon and [TS]

more so you'd have so voices and I have [TS]

geeked out a little bit offline about if [TS]

you if you like murder droids in this [TS]

  movie [TS]

you've got to get the darth vader comic [TS]

  ok who's writing it [TS]

karen gillan karen gillan alright just [TS]

writing tamaki area please tell ya but [TS]

the setup in the early going of that [TS]

comic is a poor Darth Vader is on the [TS]

outs because the Death Star got blown up [TS]

and the Emperor is blaming him for it [TS]

and part of the blame is that Vader let [TS]

the plans escape so that Vader could [TS]

track the rebellion to their secret base [TS]

i think we might see a little bit of [TS]

that happen in this movie not only of [TS]

course because that because that makes [TS]

  sense [TS]

Vader laying his plans the the darth [TS]

vader series does such a magnificent job [TS]

of marrying what many people find [TS]

problematic in the you know but golly [TS]

I'm Anakin Skywalker and nothing goes [TS]

right for me kind of whiny teenage brat [TS]

from the prequels with the darth vader [TS]

that is dark and imposing and powerful [TS]

and you know bounces back from from each [TS]

each setback but I i like that we get [TS]

we're getting that additional texture to [TS]

the character you know i went back and i [TS]

watched the original Star Wars number [TS]

weeks back and in light of rogue one as [TS]

they as they board the rebel uh [TS]

ship when he says there won't be anyone [TS]

to stop us this time I'm paraphrasing [TS]

probably I i like that that were [TS]

effectively getting a movie adaptation [TS]

of one line of Darth Vader's from New [TS]

Hope certain way how what could be more [TS]

fitting for a bunch of nerds who have [TS]

just spent almost two hours talking [TS]

about a 90 second try to be fair to be [TS]

fair we are following in the footsteps [TS]

of greatness we are all hail the mighty [TS]

Syracuse's I think we have extracted [TS]

just about every last and so fun that we [TS]

can from the trailer though so let's [TS]

well it's time for us to make a daring [TS]

escape while the network collapses [TS]

around us make the jump into hyperspace [TS]

before Jason can reactivate the tractor [TS]

  beam [TS]

so thank you everyone and [TS]

congratulations on making it through [TS]

alive unlike I suspect many of the [TS]

people that we have just been discussing [TS]

  in this trailer [TS]

Thank You chip Sabbath you're welcome [TS]

we all owe you a debt is miles I'm sorry [TS]

and good shooting noise st on i hope we [TS]

didn't let anyone down who is expecting [TS]

John siracusa but there is a 97.6 [TS]

percent chance of failure i have been [TS]

your rebel leader and johnston and [TS]

thanks to everyone out there in the core [TS]

  systems for listening [TS]

goodnight and may the force be with you [TS]

  [Music] [TS]
