Ep. 22: "My Own Dungeon Master"

00:00:00   hello hi John how are you hi Merlin I'm [TS]

00:00:11   fine except that my bluetooth keyboard [TS]

00:00:14   is dead for some reason probably out of [TS]

00:00:16   batteries [TS]

00:00:17   who and you know I was my iphone has [TS]

00:00:22   decided now that it has this new text [TS]

00:00:26   feature this I message that's different [TS]

00:00:29   from texting some somehow with Lou [TS]

00:00:31   instead of green right but if it can't [TS]

00:00:34   if it can't send its I message over [TS]

00:00:36   whatever proprietary airwaves it uses [TS]

00:00:41   then it just sits there like a dumb lump [TS]

00:00:45   like I have a have a plastic brick in my [TS]

00:00:47   hand so I was trying to communicate with [TS]

00:00:50   you [TS]

00:00:51   yeah but my keyboard was down and my [TS]

00:00:54   phone was I messaging in incompetently [TS]

00:00:59   so it's very frustrating for a memorable [TS]

00:01:03   man it's hard for verbal man not to have [TS]

00:01:05   anything to type one God you know and [TS]

00:01:08   that so i was i got on skype and I saw [TS]

00:01:11   down at the bottom is trying to like [TS]

00:01:12   figure out how I could send send you a [TS]

00:01:14   skype message and i saw a little smiley [TS]

00:01:17   face down at the bottom of the message [TS]

00:01:19   area and I clicked on it and it was all [TS]

00:01:22   those emoticons the little the little [TS]

00:01:24   smiley face with a halo and smiley face [TS]

00:01:27   with the eyeballs the googly eyes and [TS]

00:01:29   little smiley face with the devil horns [TS]

00:01:33   and I was like yeah send him some [TS]

00:01:35   smileys and he'll know that I'm he'll [TS]

00:01:38   know that I'm here so i clicked on all [TS]

00:01:40   these smileys and and without being able [TS]

00:01:42   to push return [TS]

00:01:44   uh I couldn't send it could even send a [TS]

00:01:46   smiley see if I can do that i send you [TS]

00:01:50   some smiley musical Ali and I see a [TS]

00:01:54   problem right right so I just thought [TS]

00:01:56   they were just all these smiley emoticon [TS]

00:01:59   things where we're piling up down in the [TS]

00:02:01   bottom but I couldn't send them it was [TS]

00:02:02   uh [TS]

00:02:04   I felt I felt like I felt like the the [TS]

00:02:07   protagonist of metallica's song I wasn't [TS]

00:02:09   gonna say it [TS]

00:02:10   I wasn't going to say it but but [TS]

00:02:12   darkness imprisoning me all I see [TS]

00:02:15   absolutely yeah I cannot have got skype [TS]

00:02:20   i cannot i cannot smile [TS]

00:02:23   oh my gosh John were just couple of [TS]

00:02:25   seconds and more I have so much to ask [TS]

00:02:27   you [TS]

00:02:27   yeah um well first of all gift of the [TS]

00:02:29   magi as i was just connecting with you [TS]

00:02:32   and I don't want to talk about computers [TS]

00:02:33   but I realized that my mouse is in the [TS]

00:02:35   same sad state is your keyboard its have [TS]

00:02:38   a very visit teen mouse it's actually [TS]

00:02:41   from Byzantium all byzantine mouse hole [TS]

00:02:44   the capital they are all so complicated [TS]

00:02:47   you have such as such great little [TS]

00:02:49   headdresses I don't know if it's [TS]

00:02:50   byzantine rococo baroque or just really [TS]

00:02:53   fucked up looking but yeah as in the [TS]

00:02:56   battery things blinking red yeah so we [TS]

00:02:59   almost like that Richard Pryor gene [TS]

00:03:02   wilder thing you know its Silver Streak [TS]

00:03:06   who know know the one where trade goes [TS]

00:03:08   out of control it crashes through a [TS]

00:03:09   train station [TS]

00:03:10   no there's one forget what the call is [TS]

00:03:13   called wackadoodle or I die job or [TS]

00:03:15   something [TS]

00:03:16   we're not home in jail at that guy [TS]

00:03:18   that's my favorite gene wilder movie [TS]

00:03:20   deals one of my special words I'm trying [TS]

00:03:31   keeps his powder dry it's one of those [TS]

00:03:32   words it's so special you have little [TS]

00:03:34   doubt when he needs it [TS]

00:03:35   another one I got from John's dingus i [TS]

00:03:37   love that you know you think is the last [TS]

00:03:38   episode so I can using this one even [TS]

00:03:40   though I are getting dong is a good is a [TS]

00:03:41   good substitute for dingus your you want [TS]

00:03:43   to call somebody ding-dong you when you [TS]

00:03:45   struggle sometimes to figure out exactly [TS]

00:03:47   how to frame someone sometimes you'll [TS]

00:03:49   struggle and pause for a minute and [TS]

00:03:50   you'll end up on dingdong dingdong yeah [TS]

00:03:52   although i've heard recently from from [TS]

00:03:55   close friends that I have my go to work [TS]

00:03:58   now is horseshit everything is worth [TS]

00:04:00   shit and you usually say it it's a lot [TS]

00:04:02   like the Mandarin language on go ping [TS]

00:04:04   pong here but there's a certain tonality [TS]

00:04:06   to the way you say our shit again [TS]

00:04:07   sometimes you can cause as you finally [TS]

00:04:10   mentally scan the hard disk is your [TS]

00:04:12   brain for the proper response and USA [TS]

00:04:14   horseshit [TS]

00:04:15   ok that's certain [TS]

00:04:18   it has a certain cello like quality for [TS]

00:04:21   shit because i believe hand my friend [TS]

00:04:25   let me play cello the other night i [TS]

00:04:26   should write this down we're pretty deep [TS]

00:04:27   in the stock already um I want to get [TS]

00:04:30   back to motor cars because i know that [TS]

00:04:31   something you think about I want to come [TS]

00:04:32   back to metallica um yeah I was at her [TS]

00:04:35   house pretty late and I've been drinking [TS]

00:04:37   and I know that's a great time to put a [TS]

00:04:40   cello and somebody that I said you're [TS]

00:04:42   everything she was so nice about it and [TS]

00:04:44   I I sit here now everyday didn't have a [TS]

00:04:47   clarinet brick [TS]

00:04:50   no I mean I would never ask to touch [TS]

00:04:53   somebody's clarinet it's like kissing [TS]

00:04:54   somebody's bird that's right that's [TS]

00:04:56   right [TS]

00:04:56   french kissing somebody's cockatiel who [TS]

00:04:58   gusting i know i'm sitting here now and [TS]

00:05:00   you know me you know I drink but I'm not [TS]

00:05:02   that guy you know i hope i'm not i'm not [TS]

00:05:04   i definitely don't black out and like [TS]

00:05:06   like the from wonderful Cosby in the [TS]

00:05:11   cosby himself remember i'm talking about [TS]

00:05:12   cocaine how it intensifies your [TS]

00:05:14   personality and this is what if you [TS]

00:05:16   would if you're an asshole you know now [TS]

00:05:19   with me on the kind of person that would [TS]

00:05:20   love to play a cello when by playing [TS]

00:05:22   cello I mean try not to break it while [TS]

00:05:24   I'm playing I guess the cockpit sacado [TS]

00:05:26   and I sit here every day and I know [TS]

00:05:29   chels are expensive and and you know so [TS]

00:05:32   I asked your fuckin you know a firetruck [TS]

00:05:37   most well-liked you're not guitar guy [TS]

00:05:39   right even though you do you'll never [TS]

00:05:41   get our guy at a party right now [TS]

00:05:42   sometimes I'll get roped into being [TS]

00:05:44   guitar gonna shower I've seen be shy at [TS]

00:05:46   parties [TS]

00:05:47   yeah well some people come up to me and [TS]

00:05:48   made and they start you know they start [TS]

00:05:50   leaving a little trail of breadcrumbs [TS]

00:05:52   and I'm like oh yeah i'll talk to you [TS]

00:05:54   about that and then pretty soon [TS]

00:05:56   they've led me down some primrose path [TS]

00:05:58   and i'm standing in front of a house [TS]

00:06:01   made of gingerbread who and I'm talking [TS]

00:06:03   about guitars eating right out of party [TS]

00:06:06   i'll see how am I talking about guitars [TS]

00:06:08   I'm thinking I we're at a party once i [TS]

00:06:09   think was at the end of a teacher and [TS]

00:06:11   you're very you're very tired and I [TS]

00:06:14   think he took a nap once at a party that [TS]

00:06:16   we went together because you're not a [TS]

00:06:17   party guy [TS]

00:06:18   yeah I'll take a nap apartment fuck yeah [TS]

00:06:21   without san mateo where they make a lot [TS]

00:06:22   of dolls we're at a party and I think [TS]

00:06:24   you excuse yourself and went and took a [TS]

00:06:26   nap in someone's room maybe on some cuts [TS]

00:06:27   if ya [TS]

00:06:29   yeah i'm still five years old so it [TS]

00:06:31   doesn't the attack something plaque that [TS]

00:06:33   says John Roderick slept on a coat here [TS]

00:06:36   what about you know I I used to be and [TS]

00:06:38   obviously as we've seen from the [TS]

00:06:40   impromptu skype jams i still can be [TS]

00:06:42   guitar guy i truly try not to be but [TS]

00:06:44   like nobody nobody likes get playing [TS]

00:06:47   guitar in a party guy [TS]

00:06:48   oh you're talking about play guitar and [TS]

00:06:50   a party God know it's one thing it's one [TS]

00:06:52   thing to talk about entries it's another [TS]

00:06:53   thing to like go [TS]

00:06:54   Oh in my case like even today I'm I'm [TS]

00:06:58   pretty gregarious i like talking to [TS]

00:06:59   people for a while but like it when they [TS]

00:07:01   start talking about the intricacies and [TS]

00:07:04   this is totally have you know what's the [TS]

00:07:07   word we were just don't do what you say [TS]

00:07:09   hypocritical order cripple you want to [TS]

00:07:12   refer to my friend show hypercritical is [TS]

00:07:14   totally hypocritical of me but I will [TS]

00:07:16   sit there and suddenly people you know [TS]

00:07:18   there's like pro drinkers and amateur [TS]

00:07:20   drinkers any Y and the amateur drinkers [TS]

00:07:23   will not sure you know what is correct [TS]

00:07:25   and so they start did the amateur [TS]

00:07:27   drinkers you know and these are people [TS]

00:07:29   who don't get out much they know [TS]

00:07:30   sure they get wasted on st. Patrick's is [TS]

00:07:32   enormously haha go to my oh and there's [TS]

00:07:35   the shittiest drunk drivers in the world [TS]

00:07:37   that's the problem and so this did not [TS]

00:07:40   happen at this party because it was [TS]

00:07:41   great it's a bunch of people you know [TS]

00:07:42   you have people you know it's a nice [TS]

00:07:44   group we're sitting there and you know [TS]

00:07:45   watching watching videos from the who [TS]

00:07:47   and stuff on TV and you're like let me [TS]

00:07:50   let me get that cello in my hand luke [TS]

00:07:51   and john let me check out some jello to [TS]

00:07:54   holy shit i can't believe how much I was [TS]

00:07:55   that guy that night i was also let's [TS]

00:07:57   watch a quick one on the stones rock n [TS]

00:07:59   roll circus guy that night [TS]

00:08:01   oh that's great i've been going out with [TS]

00:08:03   you right well a quick one is you know [TS]

00:08:06   that's the that's the key to watching [TS]

00:08:08   the rock and roll circus right that's [TS]

00:08:09   how you understand why no one ever saw [TS]

00:08:11   the rock and roll circus before just a [TS]

00:08:12   few years ago can't talk about the [TS]

00:08:14   rolling stones were so embarrassed that [TS]

00:08:16   the who kicked their ass all around the [TS]

00:08:18   block that they're like yeah we should [TS]

00:08:19   put the kibosh mahal kick their ass [TS]

00:08:21   I mean it's embarrassing when you know [TS]

00:08:23   that still god fucking dammit you know [TS]

00:08:25   the story behind that is what's his head [TS]

00:08:27   was it without accessories and Lindsay [TS]

00:08:31   hog or whatever the game it was one of [TS]

00:08:33   the right side answered didn't 333 [TS]

00:08:37   lindseyindia guy who directed let it be [TS]

00:08:39   anyway he um [TS]

00:08:40   and now i get all these guys confuse you [TS]

00:08:42   also got it was not Peter Schaffer is a [TS]

00:08:43   reckless Peter dear Alan is the guy that [TS]

00:08:46   was married to Liza Minnelli and who's [TS]

00:08:48   the guy who stole the rolling stones as [TS]

00:08:50   money they don't have more peterburg [TS]

00:08:53   Alex Alex Goldsmith was his name doesn't [TS]

00:08:55   matter [TS]

00:08:56   full golden Goldwater have a little bit [TS]

00:08:59   of my kids cold so i'm trying not to [TS]

00:09:01   cough on [TS]

00:09:04   yeah so anyway [TS]

00:09:07   well oh my god I can't believe how deep [TS]

00:09:10   in the stack we are here's the thing you [TS]

00:09:11   know I have a cello I have a channel [TS]

00:09:13   that I want to come back to the cello I [TS]

00:09:14   ok well here's the thing you want to do [TS]

00:09:16   and i'll send you whatever tomorrow [TS]

00:09:18   yeah fax it to me well as so this is a [TS]

00:09:20   thing was recorded in like something [TS]

00:09:23   like 1968 wire around circus it was [TS]

00:09:26   before so quick one was like 66 67 so [TS]

00:09:29   much that and they the the stones had [TS]

00:09:32   this TV show you know what no one cares [TS]

00:09:34   all I'm saying is that you don't look it [TS]

00:09:35   up well but it's worth you know watching [TS]

00:09:38   because apparently stones put this thing [TS]

00:09:40   together this extravaganza for TV I [TS]

00:09:42   guess probably in England and do you [TS]

00:09:44   know the story about the taping like how [TS]

00:09:46   was the taping what really poorly and it [TS]

00:09:48   ran really really late [TS]

00:09:49   you can see that in the footage you can [TS]

00:09:52   see everyone there is just like uh so [TS]

00:09:54   the universe [TS]

00:09:55   this isn't as fun as we thought it was [TS]

00:09:56   gonna be can you say like having a [TS]

00:09:58   wonderful is ping-pong having to work in [TS]

00:10:00   clown makeup is probably super fun for [TS]

00:10:02   about 30 seconds but let's talk to the [TS]

00:10:05   guys in jackass fucking 5a know the guy [TS]

00:10:07   with the chainsaw the Juggalos the [TS]

00:10:11   Juggalos yeah well I mean I I feel like [TS]

00:10:14   like the Rolling Stones with the [TS]

00:10:15   jugglers the sixties are you know what I [TS]

00:10:17   would love to talk about the rolling [TS]

00:10:19   stones and this is where I differ from a [TS]

00:10:20   lot of people that I'm not the easiest [TS]

00:10:22   Rolling Stones fan that's amazing to [TS]

00:10:24   hear cannot be true who apparently if I [TS]

00:10:28   got this right i think it was 5am when [TS]

00:10:30   who went on [TS]

00:10:31   oh my god and they had sexualizes that [TS]

00:10:34   performance in a whole different way [TS]

00:10:35   well it i don't even know it's like [TS]

00:10:37   there's this few videos that I make a [TS]

00:10:39   point of watching at least once a month [TS]

00:10:40   and and you know I really like music if [TS]

00:10:43   there's any even if i don't need to have [TS]

00:10:46   my understanding of the importance of [TS]

00:10:47   rock'n'roll of rock'n'roll renewed on a [TS]

00:10:49   regular basis watching that though no no [TS]

00:10:52   we'll just makes us stronger [TS]

00:10:54   it's like it's like job it's like it but [TS]

00:10:56   here's the thing about the who I mean [TS]

00:10:59   that was that whole experience was [TS]

00:11:00   before cocaine was invented [TS]

00:11:03   it's an inflection point for the band [TS]

00:11:04   because it's a beginning he's got the [TS]

00:11:06   test the best thing is before his next [TS]

00:11:08   it's after the mod thing and it's right [TS]

00:11:11   at the point when they became like the [TS]

00:11:13   really really really good band and the [TS]

00:11:15   performance is shattering it's sister [TS]

00:11:17   Mary it's after the mod thing but i [TS]

00:11:19   seriously doubt that it is after the [TS]

00:11:21   amphetamine thing focus Pete looks [TS]

00:11:24   pretty sweaty they are very and feta [TS]

00:11:26   mean and that is a you can't socks [TS]

00:11:30   though he's just he's just he's got [TS]

00:11:31   stupid hair casino here's the things [TS]

00:11:33   so-and-so still has that stupid-ass [TS]

00:11:35   haircut with bangs right well stupid ass [TS]

00:11:38   on anyone but Entwistle on it well this [TS]

00:11:41   is the name is a snappy dresser [TS]

00:11:42   he looks like an aircraft carrier he is [TS]

00:11:46   even he looks like an aircraft carrier [TS]

00:11:48   in a bowl haircut something could land [TS]

00:11:49   on him a little miss Abby it is amazing [TS]

00:11:52   you could land a jet aircraft on him and [TS]

00:11:54   he would just be like to do but i don't [TS]

00:11:57   have a huge problem [TS]

00:11:58   bass players in general protecting a [TS]

00:12:00   different fucking movie when you watch [TS]

00:12:01   what he's doing you watch his finger his [TS]

00:12:03   right hand [TS]

00:12:04   I don't know what the fuck that guys [TS]

00:12:05   doing invented by bass playing okay [TS]

00:12:07   even more so than like the huh you look [TS]

00:12:10   at modern rock n roll bass playing you [TS]

00:12:12   mean yeah modern rock and roll base [TS]

00:12:13   plate right there was talk about their [TS]

00:12:15   invented the base plate but she plays [TS]

00:12:16   banjo on smile i just learned that two [TS]

00:12:19   days ago [TS]

00:12:19   yeah she's all over they get that yet [TS]

00:12:21   smile sessions i do have it that the new [TS]

00:12:24   one [TS]

00:12:24   you know we played sloop John B just the [TS]

00:12:26   other day appear very good roots huh [TS]

00:12:29   that's pretty good song ass and I I've [TS]

00:12:31   been covering the rolling stones on the [TS]

00:12:33   ukulele so just bring it all back [TS]

00:12:35   already take up and eat up all of his [TS]

00:12:37   core give a sense of that hmmm in the [TS]

00:12:41   line [TS]

00:12:41   yeah then he took any ate up all of my [TS]

00:12:44   corn you know a lot of mix lyrics to not [TS]

00:12:48   bear close inspection no no no no first [TS]

00:12:52   of all were talking about were talking [TS]

00:12:52   about the Beach Boys and second it's a [TS]

00:12:54   folk song so jumpy has been around [TS]

00:12:56   forever always future talking about it [TS]

00:12:59   was like the first mate he got drunk [TS]

00:13:01   something in the captain's trunk and [TS]

00:13:02   then he took me up on my corn i'm pretty [TS]

00:13:04   sure got drunk and did something the [TS]

00:13:05   captain Strunk you're starting to get [TS]

00:13:06   with the songs about ok and and [TS]

00:13:09   so-and-so that performance is something [TS]

00:13:11   so just to go back a little bit you know [TS]

00:13:13   you know it starts you start you leave [TS]

00:13:15   the restaurant you go to a bar you leave [TS]

00:13:16   the bar and this woman my friend jesse [TS]

00:13:19   was nice enough to have us into her home [TS]

00:13:20   and back to this and so here's the thing [TS]

00:13:23   i'm just realizing this is a moment of [TS]

00:13:25   Revelation I think what you call it in [TS]

00:13:26   group called a moment of clarity is that [TS]

00:13:28   eminem song that's not something I ever [TS]

00:13:30   ever said but yes get mental clarity [TS]

00:13:33   that's the face that's what they say and [TS]

00:13:34   asked is it true that let you pee a nest [TS]

00:13:38   I don't even after they have a bit only [TS]

00:13:41   go to convention centers that have a [TS]

00:13:43   bathroom [TS]

00:13:43   I've never done that excuse me I have a [TS]

00:13:45   little bit of a frog in my throat I've [TS]

00:13:46   never done ask but I think my dad in the [TS]

00:13:48   seventies we did it we're back when it [TS]

00:13:52   was really the thing like all the you [TS]

00:13:54   would go there it's like a hip couples [TS]

00:13:56   retreat or so you had to do it and it's [TS]

00:13:59   Werner Herzog or something that's right [TS]

00:14:00   that the guy was the Admiral donitz yeah [TS]

00:14:03   and and my dad went and you know I think [TS]

00:14:05   that's where my dad and his little his [TS]

00:14:07   little clique of commie retinue but yeah [TS]

00:14:11   like Jewish psychologists in Alaska over [TS]

00:14:14   his head before fleece dad turtlenecks [TS]

00:14:16   they had allotted this gang war a lot of [TS]

00:14:19   turtlenecks and they actually practiced [TS]

00:14:21   you know some of the principles of a [TS]

00:14:23   stride to practice on me but as you know [TS]

00:14:25   i'm i am impervious and completely [TS]

00:14:28   bulletproof when people try to practice [TS]

00:14:29   principles on me i have i have my my [TS]

00:14:33   principal shield goes if I was gonna [TS]

00:14:35   have your player care you have a very [TS]

00:14:36   very complicated multi-page player [TS]

00:14:38   character sheet but i'm guessing [TS]

00:14:40   somewhere under your 7 charisma [TS]

00:14:42   somewhere like it [TS]

00:14:44   ok i kid i would say you have probably a [TS]

00:14:46   17 Constitution you have you probably [TS]

00:14:49   have like a 16 or 18 charisma [TS]

00:14:51   that's nice view dexterity is very low [TS]

00:14:53   that I've seen that you have trouble [TS]

00:14:54   playing the guitar it's true i'm saying [TS]

00:14:56   somewhere on their would have to have a [TS]

00:14:58   new field you have to contact gary gygax [TS]

00:15:00   I think past but there would be a field [TS]

00:15:02   on there called in previous test em in [TS]

00:15:05   and principles in general so here's what [TS]

00:15:07   I'm saying John when you find your [TS]

00:15:08   business to ask in my bag of holding [TS]

00:15:10   holding food or surgical askew [TS]

00:15:14   we've talked about this but there's no [TS]

00:15:16   way there's no way to out a lot of nerdy [TS]

00:15:21   men more than making a slightly louder [TS]

00:15:23   dnd reference at a party and seeing it [TS]

00:15:25   turns around [TS]

00:15:25   yeah yep it's quite easy to do and [TS]

00:15:27   that's why that's where we'll Wheaton's [TS]

00:15:29   wil wheaton walks around with that [TS]

00:15:30   t-shirt on with the 20-sided die on it [TS]

00:15:32   and I think people come people like [TS]

00:15:35   attacking on buses and that's gotta be a [TS]

00:15:37   pussy magnet 20-sided die down [TS]

00:15:40   tell me about it USA vs inhalers and [TS]

00:15:45   play D&D but the thing is John only true [TS]

00:15:48   who know what you know here's the thing [TS]

00:15:50   i played the shit out of the Indians [TS]

00:15:52   what I did [TS]

00:15:53   yeah here's the thing about DMV I'm a [TS]

00:15:56   lot of the people that I talk to that [TS]

00:15:58   you know the play D&D what got them out [TS]

00:16:01   of playing D&D was not that they are was [TS]

00:16:04   not that they grew out of a manner that [TS]

00:16:06   it was that they felt that they felt [TS]

00:16:07   like it was a child's game but more at [TS]

00:16:10   least in my case more that I let my own [TS]

00:16:13   imagination in terms of going on [TS]

00:16:17   adventures with elves and finding [TS]

00:16:18   treasure my own imagination was so much [TS]

00:16:21   more vivid than any dungeon master in my [TS]

00:16:24   town could conjure you become a ninja [TS]

00:16:26   master on some level I became my own [TS]

00:16:28   dungeon master who when you become your [TS]

00:16:30   own dungeon master you are no longer [TS]

00:16:31   playing dnd you don't have to hide the [TS]

00:16:33   throws my screen anymore right [TS]

00:16:35   you're just out eventually what it ended [TS]

00:16:38   up was that I was out in the forest [TS]

00:16:40   playing swords and sorcery with [TS]

00:16:42   imaginary friends imaginary dragons with [TS]

00:16:47   the people there there were not going [TS]

00:16:49   solo [TS]

00:16:51   selsella mission i made a sword out of [TS]

00:16:53   the out of this [TS]

00:16:55   the stick of wood that was holding up a [TS]

00:16:57   political sign that said like collect [TS]

00:17:00   Tom think mayor of Anchorage or whatever [TS]

00:17:01   and i took the sign and I made a sort [TS]

00:17:03   out of it and then I was off i didn't [TS]

00:17:05   need any didn't you don't need no [TS]

00:17:07   stinkin books I didn't know player [TS]

00:17:09   player characters I knew what my [TS]

00:17:10   Constitution was I think people are [TS]

00:17:14   attracted to dnd i did some of that too [TS]

00:17:16   and by the way to sounds to me like [TS]

00:17:17   you're exactly the kind of person all [TS]

00:17:18   those hysterical articles were about the [TS]

00:17:21   kind people like there's no way that [TS]

00:17:22   this is the sewers teenagers in our [TS]

00:17:24   inner sewers looking at madis yeah [TS]

00:17:27   if advantage it had decent sewers I [TS]

00:17:30   would have been down in there [TS]

00:17:31   alright i would have been fighting a pop [TS]

00:17:33   goblins spend a lot of my life trying to [TS]

00:17:35   find ways into other things i would love [TS]

00:17:38   to find a way into a sewer you kidding [TS]

00:17:39   me [TS]

00:17:40   here's the thing i think a lot of people [TS]

00:17:42   get into D&D in retrospect for two [TS]

00:17:45   reasons [TS]

00:17:46   there's a lot of reading and it's an [TS]

00:17:48   easy relatively easy way to be around [TS]

00:17:50   other people at a time you know and [TS]

00:17:52   people who you can see is easier it feel [TS]

00:17:55   cooler than cool as right and there's a [TS]

00:17:58   lot of reading i was attracted because [TS]

00:17:59   there's a lot of reading and they were [TS]

00:18:01   there were books and it was an easy way [TS]

00:18:03   to be around other people without having [TS]

00:18:05   to develop like all the social skills [TS]

00:18:08   necessary [TS]

00:18:09   well like when you're actually like when [TS]

00:18:11   you're little and you're in a church [TS]

00:18:12   group it's easy enough [TS]

00:18:13   I mean your school like your kind of [TS]

00:18:15   thrust into the situation with other [TS]

00:18:16   people and there's a tacit understanding [TS]

00:18:17   why you're all there and you don't need [TS]

00:18:19   to explain college right you can all [TS]

00:18:21   live in the same dorm right here we are [TS]

00:18:23   are you gonna borrow that pan right [TS]

00:18:24   that's like pretty easy and when you get [TS]

00:18:26   older I think that guitar no here's the [TS]

00:18:28   thing I I it wasn't even that I thought [TS]

00:18:30   it was so much I thought it was dorky [TS]

00:18:32   anymore [TS]

00:18:33   it'sit's that I think at some point in [TS]

00:18:35   every D&D guy's life it becomes less [TS]

00:18:37   about dice and bugbears and more about [TS]

00:18:40   big breasted ladies and corsets [TS]

00:18:42   hmm you know I think that our campaigns [TS]

00:18:45   Lynch's yes bitches we make the [TS]

00:18:48   transition to wenches you're into a [TS]

00:18:49   different kind of role playing well when [TS]

00:18:51   you're you start planning campaigns that [TS]

00:18:53   have involved like a lot more going to a [TS]

00:18:57   tavern because the club and there may be [TS]

00:19:01   like a hot chick in the cave but by and [TS]

00:19:03   large it's going to be some saucy saucy [TS]

00:19:05   girl behind the counter and I think that [TS]

00:19:06   that going hot chick grave always has [TS]

00:19:08   tentacles forearms is the problem at [TS]

00:19:10   first [TS]

00:19:11   well not at first no that she lures you [TS]

00:19:13   in its not to the game to call it the [TS]

00:19:15   call was called to the book wasn't also [TS]

00:19:17   a game there are so many cthulhu games [TS]

00:19:19   now I are just steps i just saw game [TS]

00:19:21   called through flux in the future that's [TS]

00:19:26   it's it's in the future yeah whoo [TS]

00:19:28   but for me my problem i guess is that I [TS]

00:19:31   have spent my whole life trying to find [TS]

00:19:32   ways to get out of being around other [TS]

00:19:35   people so maybe that's why I bet you [TS]

00:19:38   just let your guy died [TS]

00:19:40   no just like I'm I don't want to be here [TS]

00:19:42   in the second nap on somebody's members [TS]

00:19:44   only jacket with you some kids [TS]

00:19:46   yeah can I could take a nap i'm gonna go [TS]

00:19:48   play in your yard can I go act this out [TS]

00:19:50   in your yard signs and sitting there [TS]

00:19:52   it's two in the morning and i'm making [TS]

00:19:54   people watch videos on the appletv and [TS]

00:19:56   then at some point I said the jesse is [TS]

00:19:57   invited to the party [TS]

00:19:59   oh my god i don't know I I can't even [TS]

00:20:02   believe I did this I asked her if I [TS]

00:20:04   could like fiddle with her cello right [TS]

00:20:06   oh and she was so nice that you do the [TS]

00:20:09   thing that you do at parties where you [TS]

00:20:10   eat do you explain to everyone in a kind [TS]

00:20:13   of loud voice why that they might be [TS]

00:20:14   giants or that one of the great american [TS]

00:20:16   rock bands not at this party [TS]

00:20:18   let's take another I've seen you do that [TS]

00:20:20   could've been done that would have been [TS]

00:20:21   the move and would've been around if I [TS]

00:20:23   hadn't left it would have been around [TS]

00:20:25   three-thirty i will talk about the move [TS]

00:20:26   that will eventually talk about the move [TS]

00:20:28   but she was nice and she let me she said [TS]

00:20:29   no fucking way and not in her words [TS]

00:20:31   she's very polite but you fucking want [TS]

00:20:32   to send a fucking where you touching my [TS]

00:20:34   elbow [TS]

00:20:35   you know that's 1,800 bucks for about [TS]

00:20:37   four a good bow environmental horsehair [TS]

00:20:39   the bow that I'm gonna send you as an [TS]

00:20:41   1,800 bucks you can really send me a [TS]

00:20:43   cello you want to tell oh I'd be so into [TS]

00:20:46   that if they yeah [TS]

00:20:48   whoa whoa who is over is over my cello [TS]

00:20:59   area you're straight you're struggling [TS]

00:21:01   with deciding whether your cello was [TS]

00:21:02   actually within arm's reach of your desk [TS]

00:21:05   [Music] [TS]

00:21:11   hey I'm open to anything that this is a [TS]

00:21:19   this is my terrible internation because [TS]

00:21:21   I don't play friendless instrument [TS]

00:21:23   sounds like it sounds like a hill giant [TS]

00:21:31   deciding whether has food poisoning [TS]

00:21:32   maybe a golem so she gave it to me and I [TS]

00:21:38   was like it is really out flat public [TS]

00:21:40   saw sorry and and she actually showed me [TS]

00:21:42   how to hold possible uncle ron paul and [TS]

00:21:45   i actually I played it right like almost [TS]

00:21:46   exactly once and then I put it down [TS]

00:21:47   because I realized I was being that guy [TS]

00:21:49   I actually at a cute girls house I i [TS]

00:21:51   asked her to teach me talk at two in the [TS]

00:21:53   morning on her very special cello [TS]

00:21:55   uh-huh has never been more of an act III [TS]

00:21:57   don't know who it is you put your beard [TS]

00:22:00   or her asshole who the entry entry [TS]

00:22:03   anyway that's enough of that i just DNT [TS]

00:22:06   I you know the funny thing is that with [TS]

00:22:08   the dnd than I once i was offered I [TS]

00:22:10   couldn't get back into it you know but i [TS]

00:22:12   think the girl thing kind of has an [TS]

00:22:14   effect and I don't want to sound unkind [TS]

00:22:15   but I think when you talk about the [TS]

00:22:17   comic-con and stuff i think that that [TS]

00:22:19   saucy wench thing like if you if you [TS]

00:22:22   missed your job [TS]

00:22:23   what's called you know the guy ericsson [TS]

00:22:25   is an ericsson period you know which is [TS]

00:22:27   that the dnd period and if you don't [TS]

00:22:30   make it out of there is a struggle at [TS]

00:22:31   every level according ericsson right [TS]

00:22:33   here's the here's the thing that I never [TS]

00:22:34   understood who is is the presence and [TS]

00:22:38   this is this has been hammered home to [TS]

00:22:40   me over the last year to as I have [TS]

00:22:42   become more and more engaged with nerd [TS]

00:22:45   culture and more sort of drawn into the [TS]

00:22:48   nerd nexus is the undeniable presence of [TS]

00:22:52   nerd studs and nerd like hot girls [TS]

00:22:57   oh yes yes yes yes even in high school I [TS]

00:23:00   remember I was taking this some kind of [TS]

00:23:03   physics class and the kid that shared my [TS]

00:23:06   my lab partner that's what I'm trying to [TS]

00:23:08   find my lab partner was this guy who was [TS]

00:23:12   the entire semester that we have this [TS]

00:23:15   class together he was working on forging [TS]

00:23:20   the blade of a broadsword that he was [TS]

00:23:23   building for himself [TS]

00:23:25   and every day we would sit and he would [TS]

00:23:26   he would explain like all the different [TS]

00:23:29   to all the times he was gonna fold the [TS]

00:23:31   steel over and how it was you know he [TS]

00:23:34   was he was going to make this broad [TS]

00:23:35   sword but it was going to incorporate [TS]

00:23:36   some Japanese sword technology into it [TS]

00:23:39   and it never occurred to him and now i [TS]

00:23:43   guess it never occurred to me to say [TS]

00:23:44   wyd like why do you need a broadsword [TS]

00:23:47   you're 16 or whatever you but he was he [TS]

00:23:51   was fit this guy was he he was in shape [TS]

00:23:54   and he was he was smart and he was is [TS]

00:23:59   reasonably funny but he was a nerd all [TS]

00:24:02   the way you know what I mean like deep [TS]

00:24:04   inside this he was he was going to end [TS]

00:24:07   up being the guy that was walking around [TS]

00:24:09   the town where he lived with this sword [TS]

00:24:12   that he built himself like strapped into [TS]

00:24:14   a scabbard on his back and that was just [TS]

00:24:18   going to be his identity you know that [TS]

00:24:20   was his plan [TS]

00:24:21   well i have seen that guy is unusually [TS]

00:24:24   wearing a duster i have seen I've seen [TS]

00:24:26   that guy and very very wide hat not that [TS]

00:24:29   not that exact guy but about his is a [TS]

00:24:31   his mate I've seen him in several towns [TS]

00:24:34   either a duster and a either Duster or [TS]

00:24:37   there was a guy here in Seattle who had [TS]

00:24:39   a conan sword and rode a pretty hopped [TS]

00:24:43   up mountain bike and just rode around [TS]

00:24:45   town all I mean for years [TS]

00:24:48   conan conan the barbarian coming like a [TS]

00:24:52   long like a like a broadsword like a [TS]

00:24:54   really long like a really long sword [TS]

00:24:56   strapped to his back and he would ride [TS]

00:24:57   his bike around he had be that big [TS]

00:24:59   muscles and that was his that was his [TS]

00:25:03   identity that was his way of integrating [TS]

00:25:05   himself into the urban landscape he was [TS]

00:25:08   you know he woke up one day and he was [TS]

00:25:09   like I'm the broadsword bicycle guy [TS]

00:25:12   that's me I'm him and everyone will know [TS]

00:25:16   me my name will ring out from these [TS]

00:25:18   skyscrapers but so so anywhere you go to [TS]

00:25:21   these events and you see these girls [TS]

00:25:23   where you're like this is a this is a [TS]

00:25:24   cute girl this is not this is not just a [TS]

00:25:27   cute girl within the nerd world she's [TS]

00:25:31   legitimately cute girl and she is a nerd [TS]

00:25:33   and [TS]

00:25:35   so so those experiences have thrown have [TS]

00:25:37   cast doubt on what I had always I would [TS]

00:25:41   have agreed with you for years that you [TS]

00:25:43   know that there came a time when you had [TS]

00:25:45   to choose between fantasy and and [TS]

00:25:48   fantasy that was a little bit sexier and [TS]

00:25:50   the sexy fantasy leads you into rock and [TS]

00:25:51   roll and rock and roll leads you away [TS]

00:25:53   from swords and sorcery and into actual [TS]

00:25:58   sex whether this is good but the nerd [TS]

00:26:02   the nerd people were having this [TS]

00:26:04   parallel existence where they were [TS]

00:26:05   actually having sex with each other and [TS]

00:26:07   some of them just stayed over there [TS]

00:26:09   hmm this is a this is a big topic but so [TS]

00:26:13   but the the cute nerd girls like are [TS]

00:26:16   they like with the guys with the the [TS]

00:26:19   nerds that are there are they they're [TS]

00:26:20   mostly kind of fun like a fact-finding [TS]

00:26:22   mission [TS]

00:26:23   well interesting that you might find [TS]

00:26:25   interesting that you ask that because [TS]

00:26:26   generally I think the super cute nerd [TS]

00:26:28   girls in my experience at least are [TS]

00:26:32   getting off on being fetish items i [TS]

00:26:34   never really see them pair up with [TS]

00:26:36   others also generally do the nice thing [TS]

00:26:38   about that I don't see anything wrong [TS]

00:26:39   with that i mean it's fun but that is [TS]

00:26:41   nice because you can visit with that it [TS]

00:26:43   isn't like living in LA and like having [TS]

00:26:45   to be a fetish item as part of your [TS]

00:26:47   existence you get to go in and it [TS]

00:26:48   literally is a costume [TS]

00:26:49   I think I don't think very many people i [TS]

00:26:52   don't see many I i cannot i cannot [TS]

00:26:53   imagine like a normal or as we're [TS]

00:26:57   calling them now Snorks I cannot imagine [TS]

00:26:59   a snort girl snort girl going to [TS]

00:27:04   comic-con and dressing like a nerd [TS]

00:27:06   puppet as it isn't as a tourist act i [TS]

00:27:10   think to even be aware of comic-con you [TS]

00:27:12   have to already be in the nerd family [TS]

00:27:16   until dressing like a Twi'lek at home to [TS]

00:27:18   sit around watching reality shows all [TS]

00:27:20   blue [TS]

00:27:21   I don't know mm I don't know it is a [TS]

00:27:25   fully developing why don't i'm not [TS]

00:27:27   trying to sound cynical about this at [TS]

00:27:28   all i'm saying is very empowering you [TS]

00:27:30   know I think for some ladies that comes [TS]

00:27:31   out is sexy nurse at Halloween or [TS]

00:27:33   whatever and it's an opportunity to do [TS]

00:27:34   that second in a safe environment right [TS]

00:27:38   you will use you and be sexy nurse and [TS]

00:27:40   and go to like some some bar you know by [TS]

00:27:42   the college I don't think you can dress [TS]

00:27:44   like sexy Twilight and go to work at [TS]

00:27:46   amazon.com but i think that it becomes [TS]

00:27:48   more [TS]

00:27:48   Nick cosplay sexy nurse at a halloween [TS]

00:27:51   party is one thing but cosplay is [TS]

00:27:55   definitely more of a lifestyle lifestyle [TS]

00:27:57   like that's become much that's become [TS]

00:27:59   much more acceptable i think to be like [TS]

00:28:03   a character like you're 10 starts on a [TS]

00:28:05   bike guy like I don't know I got a lot [TS]

00:28:07   of questions about that that was years [TS]

00:28:09   ago that was 20 years ago sort of my god [TS]

00:28:11   maybe who he wasn't i actually found his [TS]

00:28:14   lair one time I was walking through of a [TS]

00:28:18   disused part of town a dusty disused [TS]

00:28:22   block of of town and there's an old [TS]

00:28:25   building there and you know how I feel [TS]

00:28:26   about old buildings and I was [TS]

00:28:27   investigating it with my eyes and I see [TS]

00:28:31   one of the ground floor storefronts that [TS]

00:28:34   would have a hundred years ago in the [TS]

00:28:36   place where you would get gum balls and [TS]

00:28:39   milk of magnesia was now closed and and [TS]

00:28:44   but there were all these like news [TS]

00:28:46   clippings taped in the window of this of [TS]

00:28:50   this former storefront and so I walk [TS]

00:28:52   over and start reading the news [TS]

00:28:53   clippings and I realized that it is [TS]

00:28:56   sword on a bike guys house it's his lips [TS]

00:29:00   where he lives he lives in this old [TS]

00:29:01   store and he used to be a gunner on a [TS]

00:29:06   unlike add a frigate he was an eight and [TS]

00:29:10   navy guy and he peeped he'd been a [TS]

00:29:13   gunner on one of those a hyper-fast [TS]

00:29:15   Gatling guns that you see on on little [TS]

00:29:19   frigates and and destroyers where it's [TS]

00:29:23   the same kind of gun that they put in [TS]

00:29:24   the a-10 warthog what's that what's the [TS]

00:29:28   role of about like that as a defensive [TS]

00:29:29   roller it's a kind of sneak in kind of [TS]

00:29:31   without being seen roll call their [TS]

00:29:33   fast-moving little frigates the [TS]

00:29:34   technical protect you protect a big ship [TS]

00:29:37   before do that or going to get there you [TS]

00:29:39   can you can you can fire on shore you [TS]

00:29:41   know you get up get up close to shore [TS]

00:29:42   and support mission role and that they [TS]

00:29:45   all like Bella they'll have a cruise [TS]

00:29:48   missiles now so they're they're all 400 [TS]

00:29:51   miles away and just in chicken shits and [TS]

00:29:54   cruise missiles into your front door [TS]

00:29:55   because that you could you know what the [TS]

00:29:57   new Navy is chicken shit for their [TS]

00:29:59   cruise missiles and their long-distance [TS]

00:30:01   if you can't see the guy that you're [TS]

00:30:03   shooting I don't think you have a right [TS]

00:30:04   to shoot him but that's just my that's [TS]

00:30:06   just my philosophy but anyway this guy [TS]

00:30:08   he had put up his greatest hits up in [TS]

00:30:11   the window of the shop including a [TS]

00:30:13   couple of news articles about him [TS]

00:30:15   getting arrested or getting stopped by [TS]

00:30:17   the police and detained because when he [TS]

00:30:19   first arrived on the scene because [TS]

00:30:21   they're like you can't just ride around [TS]

00:30:22   with this broad sword and he said it's [TS]

00:30:25   my constitutional right and it made some [TS]

00:30:27   little news article and so here was here [TS]

00:30:30   I saw it I saw where he lived and and [TS]

00:30:32   got a little bit of his backstory have [TS]

00:30:35   no idea what ever happened with a guy [TS]

00:30:37   he's in a storefront and there's [TS]

00:30:38   newspaper articles in the window about [TS]

00:30:40   himself right but we're facing the print [TS]

00:30:43   facing inward or outward facing outward [TS]

00:30:46   it was it was in that visit the thing it [TS]

00:30:48   wasn't on a busy street who it was it [TS]

00:30:51   was a street that for people walk down a [TS]

00:30:53   day but this was his little like this is [TS]

00:30:56   me it's almost like he wanted to be [TS]

00:30:57   found out [TS]

00:30:58   well it's not i don't think he thought [TS]

00:31:02   of it as his bat cave in the sense that [TS]

00:31:04   it was hidden behind underneath his name [TS]

00:31:06   I'm just saying if i were a guy on a [TS]

00:31:08   boot shows in as a bike rider to carry a [TS]

00:31:10   sword around with me I don't want to get [TS]

00:31:12   up too far ahead of myself but that [TS]

00:31:13   seems to me as somebody with a certain [TS]

00:31:15   defensive posture he's not attacking [TS]

00:31:17   parking meters or codes or something [TS]

00:31:19   he's just got a sword because you never [TS]

00:31:20   know right she should be right yes to me [TS]

00:31:22   you know i don't know a lot about you [TS]

00:31:26   know military material but it seems to [TS]

00:31:28   me that that compromises his position [TS]

00:31:31   heavily if he's got clips about himself [TS]

00:31:32   in the window [TS]

00:31:33   well i think that what what you are what [TS]

00:31:36   your what you are the the template that [TS]

00:31:41   we have now to talk about crazy people [TS]

00:31:43   like that is all very get there there's [TS]

00:31:46   so many conspiracies in the air now that [TS]

00:31:49   we think every crazy person must be [TS]

00:31:52   convinced that the government is trying [TS]

00:31:53   to find him and that that that they're [TS]

00:31:55   watching him from outer space and black [TS]

00:31:57   helicopters and Illuminati and blah blah [TS]

00:31:59   blah but i think twenty years ago crazy [TS]

00:32:03   people [TS]

00:32:03   [Music] [TS]

00:32:04   could be heavily armed they could be [TS]

00:32:08   very militarized and yet still not have [TS]

00:32:12   taken a total anti-government stance who [TS]

00:32:16   still be wanting attention rather than [TS]

00:32:19   trying to pretend that they don't want [TS]

00:32:21   attention as a way of getting attention [TS]

00:32:22   you know just to be like i'm not i'm not [TS]

00:32:25   wearing this sword because i think that [TS]

00:32:27   this that the government is out to get [TS]

00:32:28   me i'm wearing this sword because I'm [TS]

00:32:30   here to protect damsels from dragons who [TS]

00:32:33   you know he was a he was an older kind [TS]

00:32:35   of crazy before crazy became so [TS]

00:32:38   institutionalized food or so more [TS]

00:32:42   orthodox raso franchised right well and [TS]

00:32:45   also you know he probably didn't have [TS]

00:32:48   the resources that we have today to find [TS]

00:32:50   out more about about craziness and what [TS]

00:32:52   might fit into i think a lot of a lot of [TS]

00:32:54   the old-time Orthodox crazies or were [TS]

00:32:56   really searchers they were there were [TS]

00:32:58   people I was looking looking for what [TS]

00:32:59   the answer was and as the cycling got [TS]

00:33:02   more rapid they sometimes you know ended [TS]

00:33:04   up in places where you can put clippings [TS]

00:33:07   on the window we have one of these guys [TS]

00:33:08   in Tallahassee I think everybody's got [TS]

00:33:10   colorful people write these are you know [TS]

00:33:12   guy who runs into Superman outfit you [TS]

00:33:15   know you gotta you know the whole [TS]

00:33:16   webpage about that Peter Pan guy few [TS]

00:33:18   years ago the guy who just like Peter [TS]

00:33:19   Pan and acted like he was a kid that was [TS]

00:33:20   a kind of popular thing is going to [TS]

00:33:22   Tallahassee he went by King love and he [TS]

00:33:25   wore what started as a fairly [TS]

00:33:27   resplendent like fairytale idea of like [TS]

00:33:30   a kind of ermine looking outfit with a [TS]

00:33:33   big crown very large garrulous [TS]

00:33:35   african-american man who when you talked [TS]

00:33:37   about you tell you about his message of [TS]

00:33:39   love because he was king love it turned [TS]

00:33:40   out he was this guy who had been a [TS]

00:33:41   professor at Florida State and you know [TS]

00:33:44   you can fill in some of the tail details [TS]

00:33:46   in between you know scholarship in her [TS]

00:33:48   month but he here's the thing and this [TS]

00:33:52   is that I don't make this you know sad [TS]

00:33:53   but you know a lot of times that starts [TS]

00:33:54   out as kind of a fun thing for us and [TS]

00:33:58   then it escalates and it like that guy [TS]

00:34:00   down and down by the salt and see that [TS]

00:34:02   that painted painted that giant jesus [TS]

00:34:06   mountain out in the desert who don't [TS]

00:34:08   know about that he showed up he shown up [TS]

00:34:10   by the Salton Sea you know 50 years ago [TS]

00:34:12   or something like that and he and he [TS]

00:34:14   looked at this hill [TS]

00:34:16   it's not a mountain it's a hill [TS]

00:34:18   and he said this hill is my calling [TS]

00:34:19   these he started getting old buckets of [TS]

00:34:22   paint and just painting this hill and he [TS]

00:34:24   painted it's a pretty big hill he [TS]

00:34:27   painted the whole thing and covered it [TS]

00:34:29   with message you know with god is love [TS]

00:34:31   messages visible for miles around [TS]

00:34:34   um it's it's it's nice to look at now [TS]

00:34:37   you drive by and you go there's that who [TS]

00:34:40   but i can't i can't think that it [TS]

00:34:43   I you know and frankly the world the [TS]

00:34:45   ways of the world are mysterious perhaps [TS]

00:34:47   it has brought some people peace who [TS]

00:34:50   perhaps had brought some lonely [TS]

00:34:52   travelers closer to God but i think [TS]

00:34:55   mostly it was a waste of time in pain [TS]

00:34:58   look at rock-and-rolling that's that [TS]

00:35:01   didn't end well [TS]

00:35:02   right the guy started out with the [TS]

00:35:04   rainbow wig and he wanted you know you [TS]

00:35:06   could always see him on TV this is the [TS]

00:35:08   John 313 guy whatever 316 John's sorry [TS]

00:35:11   I'm sorry [TS]

00:35:12   16 um yeah anyway that's a well-known [TS]

00:35:15   story but that didn't create anything to [TS]

00:35:17   him [TS]

00:35:18   well you can read about it but basically [TS]

00:35:19   he started out with he was going to [TS]

00:35:21   rainbow wig I think he had some problems [TS]

00:35:23   and then he he started all those two [TS]

00:35:25   things hard to I mean one doesn't [TS]

00:35:28   necessarily fall from the other you can [TS]

00:35:30   wear rainbow working on a problem [TS]

00:35:31   well we all have our past some of us [TS]

00:35:33   choose our mind some of us choose [TS]

00:35:34   broadswords and some of us choose [TS]

00:35:35   rainbow wigs [TS]

00:35:36   there are many paths to John 313 that's [TS]

00:35:39   right by that you know and he really got [TS]

00:35:41   into it and he started devoting a lot of [TS]

00:35:42   his effort to getting into the spots [TS]

00:35:44   like pine field goals or whatever like [TS]

00:35:46   Orion you would end up on camera and it [TS]

00:35:48   became a thing you know when we're going [TS]

00:35:50   to become a thing where the camera guys [TS]

00:35:52   were intentionally trying not to join it [TS]

00:35:54   could be i think it finally became a [TS]

00:35:55   thing where it's like you know it would [TS]

00:35:57   be like having paris hilton at your [TS]

00:35:58   party or something right [TS]

00:35:59   oh he was a star but then it got into [TS]

00:36:01   the john three sixteen thing anyway I [TS]

00:36:03   think it ended up with some kind of a [TS]

00:36:04   standoff involving guns it didn't it [TS]

00:36:06   didn't end great i'm just saying that [TS]

00:36:07   escalation it goes up and up and up [TS]

00:36:09   now how do you how do you separate that [TS]

00:36:11   from somebody like Howard Finster like [TS]

00:36:13   somebody who's like a your you know for [TS]

00:36:15   that matter what I mean William [TS]

00:36:16   Burroughs like some people are just sort [TS]

00:36:18   of curiosity [TS]

00:36:20   well I think this is the thing about [TS]

00:36:22   comic-con or or or nerd culture as it [TS]

00:36:25   has expanded and become a genuine like [TS]

00:36:28   third way or a genuine of [TS]

00:36:31   a genuine now accepted and and [TS]

00:36:33   franchised piece of the cultural pie is [TS]

00:36:37   that so much of that outsider art is now [TS]

00:36:42   being embraced by what was formerly [TS]

00:36:45   outsider culture and it is becoming all [TS]

00:36:49   very inside daniel johnston daniel [TS]

00:36:52   johnston right or I mean half of indie [TS]

00:36:54   rock America there's a lot of indie rock [TS]

00:36:56   that friday roky erickson I mean there's [TS]

00:36:57   a lot of these characters that you know [TS]

00:36:59   with a million and there's on it for me [TS]

00:37:02   there's always been a big question like [TS]

00:37:03   it's pretty easy to pretend that you're [TS]

00:37:06   coupe it's it and then there are being [TS]

00:37:10   on there are plenty of guys like howard [TS]

00:37:11   finster who were you know there was no [TS]

00:37:14   pretending you know he was legitimately [TS]

00:37:17   a kook but you go to go to you go to [TS]

00:37:20   nerd events and you can see there there [TS]

00:37:22   are all kinds of people where you almost [TS]

00:37:24   feel like they were born a kook [TS]

00:37:26   there's no there's no question about it [TS]

00:37:29   but as it becomes more and more of a [TS]

00:37:31   thing becomes more and more of a culture [TS]

00:37:33   and a viable way you see you see people [TS]

00:37:37   who maybe weren't born a kook but have [TS]

00:37:40   met are now choosing to choosing to [TS]

00:37:43   effect a kind of cookie pneus then maybe [TS]

00:37:46   isn't even their birthday talking [TS]

00:37:48   themselves into it [TS]

00:37:49   yeah like all this is cool i mean this [TS]

00:37:51   thing's fun and and and pretty soon and [TS]

00:37:55   I think even more like the guy but the [TS]

00:37:57   sword guy on the bike today instead of [TS]

00:38:02   running down the street and have [TS]

00:38:03   everybody got well there's that guy he'd [TS]

00:38:06   be waiting at a stoplight and some kid [TS]

00:38:08   in a area in a wizard tap would run up [TS]

00:38:13   there [TS]

00:38:14   do you want to play with the coast of me [TS]

00:38:17   or whatever and he would get he would [TS]

00:38:19   get absorbed it people would would maybe [TS]

00:38:23   falsely identify him as a member of [TS]

00:38:25   their tribe he might get a record [TS]

00:38:26   contract with jack city right or he [TS]

00:38:30   might end up like I'm not I'm no longer [TS]

00:38:32   the sword guy on the bike i am now this [TS]

00:38:35   character that is being kind of semi [TS]

00:38:37   worshipped by a group of nerds who don't [TS]

00:38:40   understand that I'm legitimately [TS]

00:38:43   nuts CLA come of the end they turned him [TS]

00:38:47   into a finished item you saw you I don't [TS]

00:38:48   you know like to keep our show timeless [TS]

00:38:50   you know what these two programs that [TS]

00:38:52   people can listen two years from now and [TS]

00:38:54   still get your wisdom from so I you can [TS]

00:38:57   tell me if you don't talk about this but [TS]

00:38:58   you've actually been a comic-con and I [TS]

00:39:00   kind of want to hear about that but i'm [TS]

00:39:02   not sure if only hear about that but I [TS]

00:39:03   just point out that as recently as i [TS]

00:39:04   believe last week you were on a cruise [TS]

00:39:07   ship for people who like Jonathan [TS]

00:39:08   Coulton right well not just people who [TS]

00:39:11   like Jonathan Coulton all about is the [TS]

00:39:12   dominating feet but the galaxy elevator [TS]

00:39:14   pitch on the cruise jack-up jungkook [TS]

00:39:17   screws what's called Jatakas crazy Joe [TS]

00:39:19   Cruz crazy which is named after one of [TS]

00:39:22   jonathan coulton songs Tom Cruise crazy [TS]

00:39:24   right which is about a kind of crazy [TS]

00:39:27   that only Tom Cruise if you had Tom [TS]

00:39:29   Cruise's travels you'd be time to go [TS]

00:39:31   straight to do you have another lyrics [TS]

00:39:33   to songs of course i do I i'm a fan of [TS]

00:39:36   jonathan coulton you you know what I'm [TS]

00:39:38   gonna write this down I think you've [TS]

00:39:39   undergone a transformation almost circle [TS]

00:39:40   back to that but but i don't see 2003 [TS]

00:39:42   John knowing all these words that you [TS]

00:39:44   like to make my job spec then well you [TS]

00:39:47   know like dead milkmen we know you [TS]

00:39:48   stipulate you like to look man I do you [TS]

00:39:50   don't see a senior / i remember you and [TS]

00:39:52   I have very very uh I remember you [TS]

00:39:55   giving me that they might be giants [TS]

00:39:57   lecture before i had toured with they [TS]

00:40:00   might be giants before I met them in New [TS]

00:40:03   them and became friends of friends with [TS]

00:40:05   them early early on in New York my [TS]

00:40:07   friendship we had a conversation where I [TS]

00:40:10   think I started out saying yeah I mean I [TS]

00:40:13   loved the Giants back in the eighties [TS]

00:40:14   but I mean you know it's kind of it's [TS]

00:40:17   kind of in the novelty sharp music [TS]

00:40:21   family black ghetto a catalyst jonathan [TS]

00:40:23   coulton it's a wagging tail and you [TS]

00:40:25   jumped up on a coffee table and said my [TS]

00:40:29   solo [TS]

00:40:30   you have no idea what you're talking [TS]

00:40:31   about listen to these words and you and [TS]

00:40:36   you broke down I probably played you [TS]

00:40:38   they'll need a crane which sounds like a [TS]

00:40:39   very peppy song about construction [TS]

00:40:41   equipment you broke down a few different [TS]

00:40:43   songs [TS]

00:40:43   yeah said do you see what's happening [TS]

00:40:45   here do you see what's happening here [TS]

00:40:48   who and and you know because i'm a [TS]

00:40:52   difficult person i think i may be made [TS]

00:40:54   you work a little bit [TS]

00:40:55   berger and i think i may be said no [TS]

00:40:58   thank you had not sure that you so many [TS]

00:41:01   ways you know me but but I did see [TS]

00:41:04   immediately what you meant and uh and it [TS]

00:41:07   then of course going on tour with them i [TS]

00:41:10   realized that you know their songs [TS]

00:41:12   couched in the language couched in pain [TS]

00:41:16   in humorous or sort of novel language uh [TS]

00:41:20   they might be giants songs are about the [TS]

00:41:24   human condition and like Jonathan [TS]

00:41:26   Coulton and that is precisely true [TS]

00:41:28   jonathan coulton that his songs about [TS]

00:41:29   monkeys and zombies and robots are [TS]

00:41:32   really about love and sadness and loss [TS]

00:41:36   and all the things that make us human [TS]

00:41:40   and the fact that they are you know the [TS]

00:41:43   fact that the topics are giggly who is [TS]

00:41:47   what draws the Nerds i think but what [TS]

00:41:49   keeps the nerds and what makes him a [TS]

00:41:52   cultural force and what makes the the [TS]

00:41:56   Giants of cultural forces that you can [TS]

00:41:58   listen to this stuff [TS]

00:41:59   dig in a little bit deeper and realize [TS]

00:42:00   oh my god this is that the pay those [TS]

00:42:02   that's in this music is is the fact that [TS]

00:42:07   the music is is fun to listen to doesn't [TS]

00:42:10   make it any less meaningful who [TS]

00:42:14   so you you actually gave me that you [TS]

00:42:18   gave me that speech about they might be [TS]

00:42:19   giants before I never met them and it [TS]

00:42:20   acted it it it truly help me because [TS]

00:42:25   going on tour with them i was kinda [TS]

00:42:26   primed to listen to them in a different [TS]

00:42:28   way and then of course I became friends [TS]

00:42:30   with them and you know I think they're [TS]

00:42:33   they're some of the most deeply human [TS]

00:42:35   people i know helps that they put on a [TS]

00:42:37   hell of a reaction 2 and 0 [TS]

00:42:40   it helps that Jonathan Coulton is a is a [TS]

00:42:43   songwriter like of the of the highest [TS]

00:42:47   order [TS]

00:42:48   you know he understands music and how [TS]

00:42:49   songs are put together so anyway I have [TS]

00:42:51   been drawn into this nerd culture [TS]

00:42:53   through becoming an appreciator of some [TS]

00:42:57   of the highest practitioners of the art [TS]

00:42:59   if you know what I mean who you know [TS]

00:43:01   like i am not i have not i'm not such a [TS]

00:43:05   member of the nerd culture that anybody [TS]

00:43:06   that stands up [TS]

00:43:08   with a banjo and wrote a song about a [TS]

00:43:10   robot is somebody that I'm gonna be like [TS]

00:43:13   I love songs about robots because [TS]

00:43:15   actually I do not love songs about robot [TS]

00:43:17   well there's a thread on this trip they [TS]

00:43:19   might be giants by think one thing that [TS]

00:43:20   all Jonathan songs is a sense of being [TS]

00:43:24   an outsider and not being precisely sure [TS]

00:43:27   what to do about it and and feeling a [TS]

00:43:30   little bit misunderstood that's what I [TS]

00:43:31   like about that like the mad scientist [TS]

00:43:33   zombie stuff is is the the person [TS]

00:43:36   writing the song has the awareness that [TS]

00:43:37   that person is an outsider and knows why [TS]

00:43:39   but i think it back to the DMV you may [TS]

00:43:42   feel like an outsider a lot of times in [TS]

00:43:43   your life and think all of the tricks [TS]

00:43:46   that I have for fixing this are not [TS]

00:43:48   working and it's making it worse [TS]

00:43:50   and this is a this has been a recurring [TS]

00:43:52   theme for me in in trying to integrate [TS]

00:43:55   or interact with these people because [TS]

00:43:57   for many many many years for most of my [TS]

00:44:00   life I considered myself a nerd and it [TS]

00:44:04   was because as a young person you talk [TS]

00:44:07   about six seven eight years old I was [TS]

00:44:10   precocious and articulate and I like to [TS]

00:44:13   talk to adults and I didn't like comic [TS]

00:44:16   books and I didn't like sports and so my [TS]

00:44:20   peers in school [TS]

00:44:22   absolutely called me a nerd treated me [TS]

00:44:24   like a nerd talk to me as a nerd [TS]

00:44:26   because because of of the simple fact [TS]

00:44:31   that all kids like comic books and all [TS]

00:44:33   kids like sports and I didn't like [TS]

00:44:36   either thing and prefer to sit around [TS]

00:44:38   you know that it was a party and there [TS]

00:44:40   were some adults and the kids were off [TS]

00:44:41   playing I'd go sit with the adults and [TS]

00:44:43   try and listen to their conversation so [TS]

00:44:45   as the years went by in high school I [TS]

00:44:50   mean I i consider myself a nerd i'm sure [TS]

00:44:52   there are people who went to high school [TS]

00:44:53   with me that thought I want you know was [TS]

00:44:55   one of the cool kids but I didn't and [TS]

00:44:58   and you start to get that [TS]

00:45:00   self-identification as a nerd when maybe [TS]

00:45:02   you're not even realizing that you're [TS]

00:45:03   kind of not want anymore [TS]

00:45:05   yes a fight absolutely the same i still [TS]

00:45:07   thought I was one and identified as one [TS]

00:45:09   and that that self-identification [TS]

00:45:12   carried on into adulthood well now i'm [TS]

00:45:15   in a posture where am i meeting all [TS]

00:45:17   these nerds who like comic books and [TS]

00:45:19   sports [TS]

00:45:20   and that is there like we're nerds we [TS]

00:45:24   like comic books and i still have a very [TS]

00:45:26   gud a deep reaction to that because as a [TS]

00:45:30   kid it was precisely not like it was not [TS]

00:45:34   liking comic books was what mainstream [TS]

00:45:36   kids did it was precisely not liking [TS]

00:45:38   comic books that made me feel like an [TS]

00:45:40   outsider all these people who are 40 [TS]

00:45:43   years old and still like comic books I [TS]

00:45:46   understand why they feel like they're [TS]

00:45:48   nerds but that's that's become so much [TS]

00:45:51   more acceptable unless you yeah it's [TS]

00:45:54   it's it's it's super mainstream to be [TS]

00:45:56   like to be a 40-year old guy who is [TS]

00:45:59   obsessed with sports or obsessed with [TS]

00:46:01   superhero look at that Adam Savage guy i [TS]

00:46:03   mean you know he's made a whole thing [TS]

00:46:05   out of out of that I think I mean I well [TS]

00:46:08   he also liked science and that is nerdy [TS]

00:46:10   and is Mary I i was fortunate to visit [TS]

00:46:13   his little area that he has a couple [TS]

00:46:15   times and you visited his area [TS]

00:46:17   yes I'm not trying to like that guy I [TS]

00:46:19   tagged along with some people I thought [TS]

00:46:21   you were talking about that you put your [TS]

00:46:22   mouse mat areas horse area now no I've [TS]

00:46:25   never touched Adam Savage horse area but [TS]

00:46:27   I mean you know he's guide I it see the [TS]

00:46:31   thing is i consider myself i always [TS]

00:46:34   think of myself as being like a star [TS]

00:46:35   wars nerd until I meet real star wars [TS]

00:46:37   nerds and it's andrea oh my gosh it's so [TS]

00:46:40   different so different I mean he's got I [TS]

00:46:43   thought lightsabers were the same and [TS]

00:46:44   boy was I wrong [TS]

00:46:45   now I know that and I know Count Dooku [TS]

00:46:47   has a really different lightsaber just [TS]

00:46:48   cause it's just my daughter and reading [TS]

00:46:50   things and watching movies but I think [TS]

00:46:52   he's got like we got mostly made like [TS]

00:46:54   machined all the different light sabers [TS]

00:46:57   he's got all these got lightsabers [TS]

00:46:58   yeah that even showing stuff i was just [TS]

00:47:01   on this nerd crews and at work during [TS]

00:47:03   one of the performances somebody made a [TS]

00:47:07   total recall reference and in the space [TS]

00:47:11   of 30 seconds three or four more Total [TS]

00:47:16   Recall references followed it like boom [TS]

00:47:18   boom [TS]

00:47:19   well I was still strong i was standing [TS]

00:47:21   there on the stage struggling term Total [TS]

00:47:23   Recall right that's that Arnold [TS]

00:47:25   Schwarzenegger movie where he was uh [TS]

00:47:29   it's like he forgot Who and I by the [TS]

00:47:32   time i'm even putting the plot of it [TS]

00:47:34   together Total Recall there there has [TS]

00:47:37   been a total recall mean visited [TS]

00:47:39   explored and we are on to something else [TS]

00:47:41   and I'm like that is a kind of [TS]

00:47:44   absorption and I end and in a kind of [TS]

00:47:49   love popular culture that i just i [TS]

00:47:51   simply do not have like i did not go [TS]

00:47:55   back and watch Total Recall again and [TS]

00:47:57   again as one of 500 movies that I've [TS]

00:48:00   watched multiple times so i can't really [TS]

00:48:03   i mean i can't play at that level I [TS]

00:48:07   think nerds I think there's I have a lot [TS]

00:48:09   of attention maybe everybody's got [TS]

00:48:10   retention about the things they care [TS]

00:48:12   about but I mean you know I used to know [TS]

00:48:14   a lot about hip points i didn't have to [TS]

00:48:16   look that up [TS]

00:48:17   there's a lot of things I didn't lie low [TS]

00:48:18   and we're going to say Hitler and I [TS]

00:48:20   we've been pretty good about avoiding [TS]

00:48:22   the Hitler for a while you know what you [TS]

00:48:24   know what I wanted her to know it's like [TS]

00:48:25   it's like a net down the little book [TS]

00:48:27   here there's a writer and I might be one [TS]

00:48:28   you know what I watched last night like [TS]

00:48:30   I got back from Florida I'm lying in my [TS]

00:48:32   bed you're in florida [TS]

00:48:34   well yeah that's where the crews went [TS]

00:48:36   from where did it's a embarked from Fort [TS]

00:48:38   Lauderdale [TS]

00:48:39   oh my god yeah the but if God was going [TS]

00:48:43   to give america and he would put it in [TS]

00:48:45   fort lauderdale never come out in cystic [TS]

00:48:48   American no no God frontier on the way [TS]

00:48:51   back and American the way they're both [TS]

00:48:53   of them complete slave barges hell [TS]

00:48:56   storms yeah they're just flinging [TS]

00:48:59   calling and calling us on a hell ship [TS]

00:49:01   yeah you know with the airlines are [TS]

00:49:02   doing now they're inventing new rules [TS]

00:49:04   every 30 seconds [TS]

00:49:05   oh it's just so capricious this sat in a [TS]

00:49:08   chair and they're like oh you can't sit [TS]

00:49:10   in that chair because you have a baby on [TS]

00:49:11   your lap and I was like how is this [TS]

00:49:12   chair different from anywhere any other [TS]

00:49:14   chair on the airplane and they said well [TS]

00:49:16   that chairs behind the next step and I [TS]

00:49:19   said I understand what you're saying now [TS]

00:49:22   I understand why a baby camp in an exit [TS]

00:49:24   row but there's no reason that I can't [TS]

00:49:26   is a flight risk behind an exit row and [TS]

00:49:29   then the next Stewart is that comes by [TS]

00:49:30   says so I had the baby off you know to [TS]

00:49:34   my to my baby mama [TS]

00:49:36   and the next door is down the line comes [TS]

00:49:39   along and says there are too many people [TS]

00:49:40   in that row they're not enough air [TS]

00:49:42   they're not of oxygen masks in that row [TS]

00:49:44   442 lat babies and fight you know i'm [TS]

00:49:47   just like you just making shit up now [TS]

00:49:49   absolutely and services are so [TS]

00:49:51   disempowered that they don't that [TS]

00:49:53   they're just like the only thing I can [TS]

00:49:54   do is walk down the aisle and all I I [TS]

00:49:57   know you love your bureaucracy and you [TS]

00:49:58   are a huge event I think the thing is [TS]

00:50:00   when you get to a point where you don't [TS]

00:50:01   have real power anymore you know they [TS]

00:50:03   say that in life a real power is not the [TS]

00:50:06   ability to say no [TS]

00:50:07   icw say yes and I think when you become [TS]

00:50:10   a bureaucrat you mainly drive a lot of [TS]

00:50:12   your power from saying no real power in [TS]

00:50:14   improv is the ability to say yes yes and [TS]

00:50:17   yes and right sorry yes but haha [TS]

00:50:22   there's a famous yes there's a little [TS]

00:50:24   story where Joan Rivers was doing a [TS]

00:50:26   scene with mike nichols and you know [TS]

00:50:27   everybody learns the S&L clothes from [TS]

00:50:29   the beginning and supposedly mechnical [TS]

00:50:31   started I was like I can't believe this [TS]

00:50:33   is why we're getting divorced and [TS]

00:50:34   remember because we talk about we're not [TS]

00:50:36   even married she was considered not good [TS]

00:50:39   at that now here's there's two things [TS]

00:50:40   first of all yes yes that is ridiculous [TS]

00:50:43   there are some baby things there's a lot [TS]

00:50:44   of fairly sensible baby things on one of [TS]

00:50:46   those but I mean as far as those as a [TS]

00:50:48   ride like that when they said don't [TS]

00:50:49   drown your baby in a bucket I was like [TS]

00:50:51   oh helpful advice thank you [TS]

00:50:53   yeah but well the air harpies that [TS]

00:50:56   they're they're very unhappy people but [TS]

00:50:58   here's the other thing that drives me [TS]

00:50:59   crazy is the redundancy every statement [TS]

00:51:02   they make almost every statement made on [TS]

00:51:04   a plane has a built-in redundancy that [TS]

00:51:07   makes me flip [TS]

00:51:08   what's this i hear about your 2 p.s [TS]

00:51:10   reports you gotta come to or we gotta [TS]

00:51:12   wait till we come to a full and complete [TS]

00:51:14   stop [TS]

00:51:15   yeah oh that is redundant oh you never [TS]

00:51:17   noticed this and our plane is a hundred [TS]

00:51:18   percent full oh you never noticed this [TS]

00:51:22   its mounting oh my ears my ears were [TS]

00:51:25   attuned to it but now you are causing a [TS]

00:51:27   new thing for me to be pissed off about [TS]

00:51:29   so I don't going to stand up routine is [TS]

00:51:31   just the air travel is just it's so [TS]

00:51:32   unpleasant whatever here so unpleasant [TS]

00:51:34   going back to what last night got home [TS]

00:51:37   and I was like so how long's that's like [TS]

00:51:39   that's like an hour flight well since we [TS]

00:51:41   stopped to denver don't get me started [TS]

00:51:43   a long time i was on the plane all day I [TS]

00:51:45   get home and I'm sitting there i got my [TS]

00:51:47   ipad I'm like I'm gonna watch a movie [TS]

00:51:50   and I can't go on to netflix i'm just [TS]

00:51:53   i'm i'm i'm promoting product after [TS]

00:51:54   product here [TS]

00:51:55   ipad netflix Hitler Hitler I go on [TS]

00:52:00   netflix and based on the based on the [TS]

00:52:02   movies I've watched in the past netflix [TS]

00:52:04   suggest that maybe I would like to relax [TS]

00:52:07   by watching triumph of the will and i [TS]

00:52:15   think that's so funny that i watch it [TS]

00:52:18   pretty isn't it pretty long while lying [TS]

00:52:21   in bed watching trying for the world it [TS]

00:52:23   is very long lots of slow motion and [TS]

00:52:26   lots of martial music most of the most [TS]

00:52:29   of the film is not speeches most of the [TS]

00:52:31   films people marching around while the [TS]

00:52:33   music goes [TS]

00:52:34   dar-dar-dar-dar an ardor and like slow [TS]

00:52:39   slow fades between big flapping swastika [TS]

00:52:43   flags and all these blonde crew-cut guys [TS]

00:52:47   looking like with the total agile ation [TS]

00:52:51   at this slumpy little Austrian you know [TS]

00:52:56   but Paul up of Hitler and and I'm and [TS]

00:53:00   halfway through the night I'm like what [TS]

00:53:02   are you doing this is to our long movie [TS]

00:53:04   a trip to our long propaganda film about [TS]

00:53:07   Hitler what are you doing [TS]

00:53:09   couldn't you have watched happy gilmore [TS]

00:53:11   or something like just go turn your [TS]

00:53:12   brain off instead I'm like I'm looking [TS]

00:53:15   at every single and what I'm really [TS]

00:53:19   fascinated by their tailoring and all [TS]

00:53:23   the kind of opinions I don't know it's a [TS]

00:53:26   it's amazing film but not netflix i [TS]

00:53:29   don't think netflix really understands [TS]

00:53:30   me as well as it thinks it does we get [TS]

00:53:33   they suggest it was lots of thomas the [TS]

00:53:35   train things [TS]

00:53:36   yeah but yet netflix recommendations can [TS]

00:53:38   be very odd but in that case John I mean [TS]

00:53:40   I think you're that's your fighting [TS]

00:53:41   uphill battles instructor flew past is [TS]

00:53:44   prologue right up [TS]

00:53:46   I would worry he started getting lots of [TS]

00:53:47   like you know Iran vehicles or something [TS]

00:53:49   and that's next rider Clint Eastwood [TS]

00:53:52   movies haven't seen a lot of Hitler [TS]

00:53:53   movies is that whenever using the mean [TS]

00:53:55   sea no with bread [TS]

00:53:56   against freaking out good actor but i [TS]

00:53:59   don't think i've seen many other movies [TS]

00:54:00   they switch tora tora when I was a kid [TS]

00:54:02   that was my that was my canonical long [TS]

00:54:05   movie when I was making Midway's of [TS]

00:54:07   great movies a good one alright Midway's [TS]

00:54:09   great except down except there's a scene [TS]

00:54:11   it's just getting I remember I watching [TS]

00:54:14   the way in the theaters with my dad [TS]

00:54:15   because he's a world war two veteran we [TS]

00:54:17   always went to sea world war two movies [TS]

00:54:19   and Midway came out in 78 or something [TS]

00:54:22   like that we go to see the movie you [TS]

00:54:23   know it's about the Battle of Midway [TS]

00:54:24   which is the turning point of the war [TS]

00:54:26   food and there's a scene when the [TS]

00:54:30   Americans have the Americans have the [TS]

00:54:33   clouds have parted their up in their [TS]

00:54:34   airplanes and they see the Japanese [TS]

00:54:36   fleet and this is the big moment right [TS]

00:54:38   like they are surprised attacking these [TS]

00:54:42   three japanese aircraft carriers and [TS]

00:54:44   this is this is the this is really the [TS]

00:54:46   turning point in the war [TS]

00:54:47   japanese don't know they're there and [TS]

00:54:50   the Americans you know they they they [TS]

00:54:52   know their planes over and then go into [TS]

00:54:54   this steep dive in there they're headed [TS]

00:54:56   down cut to a shot of the deck of the [TS]

00:55:00   Japanese carrier where all these [TS]

00:55:03   Japanese American actors are milling [TS]

00:55:06   around on the deck pretending to be a [TS]

00:55:09   bunch of sailors just going about their [TS]

00:55:11   business unaware that the Americans are [TS]

00:55:13   about to attack them and I imagine as an [TS]

00:55:17   actor that that's a hard right that's a [TS]

00:55:20   hard thing for director tell you all [TS]

00:55:21   right you're on the deck of the aircraft [TS]

00:55:23   carrier and you're just doing your work [TS]

00:55:25   you're doing your aircraft carrier work [TS]

00:55:28   you have no idea that the Americans are [TS]

00:55:31   about to attack so just act natural [TS]

00:55:35   so all these guys milling around the [TS]

00:55:37   deck of the aircraft carrier and the [TS]

00:55:39   whole sudden one of the guy right in the [TS]

00:55:40   center of the screen [TS]

00:55:42   apropos of nothing [TS]

00:55:45   spins around points to the sky goes by [TS]

00:55:47   about my job on that as though i mean [TS]

00:55:55   really busy playing this playing that [TS]

00:55:56   famous the famous casual oriental [TS]

00:55:59   coolness about about about playing [TS]

00:56:01   attacks [TS]

00:56:02   yeah yeah two seconds before he was what [TS]

00:56:04   was really that ping-pong it was and and [TS]

00:56:06   and made it was it wasn't it wasn't just [TS]

00:56:09   the whole I mean this is from the era [TS]

00:56:11   when the portrayal of Japanese in war [TS]

00:56:13   movies was pretty touch-and-go but even [TS]

00:56:18   tora tora tora like that subtitles like [TS]

00:56:20   the Japanese people people spoke [TS]

00:56:21   Japanese yeah and no this was the in [TS]

00:56:25   this in this film uh there were there [TS]

00:56:28   were American actors playing the [TS]

00:56:30   japanese characters if i recall [TS]

00:56:33   correctly who but definitely this one [TS]

00:56:36   actor this one guy who two seconds [TS]

00:56:40   before was just on his way across the [TS]

00:56:42   aircraft carrier deck probably he was [TS]

00:56:46   the guy he was an orderly or he was [TS]

00:56:47   headed somewhere to to change the toilet [TS]

00:56:49   paper or something and then he spins [TS]

00:56:51   around points to the sky goes down the [TS]

00:56:53   Tama and at eight years old I was like [TS]

00:56:57   well that just took me out of the movie [TS]

00:56:59   i was really engrossed a second ago but [TS]

00:57:02   that one scene that guy's terrible [TS]

00:57:04   acting really and so now I can't watch [TS]

00:57:08   the movie with that what we're now [TS]

00:57:09   waiting for that guy like I love him now [TS]

00:57:12   this is joon 1942 is it really that [TS]

00:57:15   early was considered a turning point [TS]

00:57:16   where we still kind of getting our ass [TS]

00:57:17   kicked up through like 43 what we were [TS]

00:57:19   accepted [TS]

00:57:20   well it was a turning point because we [TS]

00:57:23   think 33 japanese characters in one in [TS]

00:57:26   one battle and that was the four [TS]

00:57:28   carriers one Cruiser 248 aircraft for [TS]

00:57:32   carrier [TS]

00:57:33   yeah wewe lost 1 in a loss for I'm sorry [TS]

00:57:35   and they forgive me 3057 Japanese killed [TS]

00:57:39   ya think is always right but the four [TS]

00:57:42   carriers in the war in the Pacific was a [TS]

00:57:44   was a carrier war movie know what's [TS]

00:57:46   along that's a long drive [TS]

00:57:47   it is it's a really long drive and and [TS]

00:57:50   and establishing air superiority [TS]

00:57:53   through all those archipelagos all [TS]

00:57:56   through the you know through Southeast [TS]

00:57:59   Asia like the carriers were going to be [TS]

00:58:01   the deciding factor and the Japanese did [TS]

00:58:04   not have the ability that we had again [TS]

00:58:06   wasn't them [TS]

00:58:07   we could but we kicked our war machine [TS]

00:58:10   into gear and we were turning out [TS]

00:58:12   aircraft carriers like like Lay's potato [TS]

00:58:14   chips and that was much more of a [TS]

00:58:17   capital investment on their part and it [TS]

00:58:19   was much harder for them to replace [TS]

00:58:21   those characters carriers so yeah [TS]

00:58:23   looking i don't think at the time they [TS]

00:58:25   thought turning point of the war who but [TS]

00:58:27   in retrospect also says here at [TS]

00:58:29   code-breaking code-breaking was a big [TS]

00:58:30   part of the war wasn't with the enigma [TS]

00:58:32   and stuff that's partly how we won right [TS]

00:58:34   well and in Europe and make my helped us [TS]

00:58:37   a lot and then they did that thing is [TS]

00:58:39   they didn't know we cracked it for a [TS]

00:58:40   long time now is a big part of a rate [TS]

00:58:42   that's the thing again is this why you [TS]

00:58:43   don't put your name for this way to put [TS]

00:58:45   your newspapers in the window [TS]

00:58:47   you're saying this much more valuable if [TS]

00:58:50   they don't know what we separate ships i [TS]

00:58:52   was reading about the potential much as [TS]

00:58:53   i do I don't know why I always end up [TS]

00:58:55   reading about awful things I ended up [TS]

00:58:57   you heard me earlier reference tell [TS]

00:58:58   ships i I've been reading on that [TS]

00:59:00   Frederick Douglass autobiography which [TS]

00:59:03   is a heck of a reed and and reading [TS]

00:59:06   about slave ships and apparently they're [TS]

00:59:07   pretty pretty unpleasant to be on what i [TS]

00:59:10   can tell it's just you were talking [TS]

00:59:12   about on death march and then you're [TS]

00:59:13   talking about Frederick Douglass and was [TS]

00:59:15   like I'm gonna pull this all together [TS]

00:59:17   my brain was just going to mention that [TS]

00:59:20   denzel washington movie but I was [TS]

00:59:22   turning the key and the starter was just [TS]

00:59:24   not engaging was like how is he gonna do [TS]

00:59:26   it how we connect those smiley I'm not [TS]

00:59:28   the scholar that you are but anyway then [TS]

00:59:30   I ended up reading diversely know how [TS]

00:59:31   this is the wikipedia problem is you're [TS]

00:59:33   not even reading these things why I know [TS]

00:59:34   more about serial killers and I would [TS]

00:59:36   ever hear my god me too i did i'd done [TS]

00:59:38   serial killers on wikipedia big time [TS]

00:59:40   there's a page we can find his killed [TS]

00:59:42   the most I think it's gary ridgway isn't [TS]

00:59:45   true [TS]

00:59:46   I haven't looked in a while Gary [TS]

00:59:47   ridgway's at this green river guy [TS]

00:59:49   no it was really he said he still holds [TS]

00:59:51   the record [TS]

00:59:52   well the problem is that you never know [TS]

00:59:54   how many possible 100-plus that's right [TS]

00:59:57   that's right and ended up reading about [TS]

00:59:58   the potential march which is all [TS]

00:59:58   the potential march which is all [TS]

01:00:00   so apparently pretty unpleasant that was [TS]

01:00:02   bad and so is it correct that with boys [TS]

01:00:05   is really gonna be a funny episode is [TS]

01:00:06   that down and they made it sound like [TS]

01:00:08   like though the really really horrific [TS]

01:00:11   things that happen on the potential [TS]

01:00:12   march we very effectively we yes it was [TS]

01:00:17   way the Allies the United States used it [TS]

01:00:19   very effectively to like redouble [TS]

01:00:21   everybody's effort on how important this [TS]

01:00:22   was [TS]

01:00:23   I mean at the time there was whispers [TS]

01:00:24   about about the camps right yeah but we [TS]

01:00:27   knew that they were just banning people [TS]

01:00:29   for no reason [TS]

01:00:30   yeah and that was now is it true that [TS]

01:00:32   was a very effective way to redouble [TS]

01:00:33   people's efforts at a time when we work [TS]

01:00:35   wasn't going that great one also the [TS]

01:00:37   soldiers that were bataan death march [TS]

01:00:38   where precisely the soldiers that [TS]

01:00:41   MacArthur abandoned when he snuck out of [TS]

01:00:45   the philippines in the dead of the night [TS]

01:00:47   escaping the Japanese advance so [TS]

01:00:50   MacArthur's whole like I shall return [TS]

01:00:53   business was you know kind of a shadowed [TS]

01:00:58   or shaded by the fact that a lot of the [TS]

01:01:00   people that a lot of his army that he [TS]

01:01:03   left behind got you know got baton [TS]

01:01:08   so when he when he landed in the [TS]

01:01:11   Philippines again it had this had the [TS]

01:01:16   air of like retribution and had like [TS]

01:01:19   they're it wasn't just that we're here [TS]

01:01:21   to save our philippine brothers it was [TS]

01:01:25   we're here to avenge I think that death [TS]

01:01:28   and mistreatment of all these you know [TS]

01:01:31   these men to salvage my reputation [TS]

01:01:33   that's right all these men that I [TS]

01:01:35   unfortunately had to leave behind when I [TS]

01:01:37   split early on in the war really made [TS]

01:01:41   the article he made it sound like you [TS]

01:01:42   know first of all these were [TS]

01:01:44   particularly nice people that were [TS]

01:01:45   running the death march but also that it [TS]

01:01:47   was a resource thing that they couldn't [TS]

01:01:48   they couldn't afford ships to transport [TS]

01:01:51   an instance I mean they could their [TS]

01:01:54   scrounging food and water from the [TS]

01:01:56   Landers they went by now there are a lot [TS]

01:01:57   of people on that March when it is very [TS]

01:01:59   hard and how low the morale and health [TS]

01:02:02   was on the people that were being [TS]

01:02:03   attacked so anyway uh World War [TS]

01:02:07   dysentery you know dysentery cause a lot [TS]

01:02:09   of people that's one such a cheerful [TS]

01:02:11   attitude [TS]

01:02:13   I know two things about death i know [TS]

01:02:14   that i have heard that the reason [TS]

01:02:17   anybody ever dies is is because [TS]

01:02:19   basically their lack of oxygen that's [TS]

01:02:21   ultimately what it comes down to it was [TS]

01:02:22   a gunshot wound or you know obviously [TS]

01:02:24   autos asphyxiation but that the other [TS]

01:02:27   one is that diarrhea is the main cause [TS]

01:02:28   of death in the world with the true [TS]

01:02:30   yeah i think that is true people become [TS]

01:02:32   dehydrated and through a process of not [TS]

01:02:36   having enough hydration from cr2 nerds [TS]

01:02:39   which is what Hitler pooping out D&D [TS]

01:02:43   emoticons no emoticons used to be mad [TS]

01:02:47   about emoticons are you still mad about [TS]

01:02:49   him [TS]

01:02:49   did you like you only commit all i'm [TS]

01:02:52   still waiting myself off them because [TS]

01:02:53   it's been so automatic since 1990 [TS]

01:02:55   whatever three going on the Internet [TS]

01:02:57   let me just be typing I I'm still [TS]

01:02:59   weighing myself I don't have any [TS]

01:03:01   something beside emoticon I i I'm gonna [TS]

01:03:05   cause I'm opposed to primarily because i [TS]

01:03:07   am a student of language and I don't [TS]

01:03:08   think that they do any better I'll jolly [TS]

01:03:11   word fucking brain but also you know my [TS]

01:03:14   mom's didn't have a lot of things that [TS]

01:03:16   doesn't make your authority on any of [TS]

01:03:17   them from my mom's story was that she [TS]

01:03:20   was a she was the computer programmer in [TS]

01:03:22   the sixties and seventies and wrote [TS]

01:03:24   oh and the early sixties and wrote a lot [TS]

01:03:26   of the code that uh that still drives [TS]

01:03:30   are our American industries of insurance [TS]

01:03:34   banking etc etc and during the speech [TS]

01:03:38   issues like it wasn't like a manager of [TS]

01:03:40   programmers to and she's hardcore yeah [TS]

01:03:43   she was details like the excuse like the [TS]

01:03:44   Carroll k of punch cards right during [TS]

01:03:47   the y2k era she was getting all these [TS]

01:03:50   phone calls from people saying like we [TS]

01:03:53   think that I didn't hear 2,000 [TS]

01:03:55   everything's going to shut down and [TS]

01:03:58   nobody knows how to write this code [TS]

01:03:59   anymore nobody knows how to nobody you [TS]

01:04:01   understand how it's built will you come [TS]

01:04:04   back and help us save our save our skins [TS]

01:04:08   and she was like not for any money in [TS]

01:04:10   the world up sean connery said it first [TS]

01:04:14   with the Alcatraz when Sean Connery they [TS]

01:04:16   brought in to whatever they need an [TS]

01:04:17   expert on Alcatraz right Sean Connery is [TS]

01:04:20   an expert on Alcatraz not [TS]

01:04:21   one was the one where the people took [TS]

01:04:23   over the island not the not the Native [TS]

01:04:24   Americans but was Nicolas Cage movie [TS]

01:04:26   where they had to bring in somebody had [TS]

01:04:28   been a prisoner there to really [TS]

01:04:29   understand how the place operated [TS]

01:04:30   clattering into the prisoner of alcohol [TS]

01:04:33   controls uh well i think probably I mean [TS]

01:04:35   no no now you don't talk about tho you [TS]

01:04:38   gotta bring on no and no but I'm for any [TS]

01:04:43   money in the world Sean Connery's what [TS]

01:04:45   she said she said no way am i touching [TS]

01:04:46   that crap spaghetti code no way and she [TS]

01:04:48   is or she just had to walk the dog she [TS]

01:04:49   wrote your mom is a very very well [TS]

01:04:51   defined schedule understand she's very [TS]

01:04:53   little sense she said screw you let you [TS]

01:04:56   know [TS]

01:04:56   damn the torpedoes some you know some [TS]

01:04:58   days like to just watch the world burn [TS]

01:05:01   your mom get that well she did she [TS]

01:05:04   certainly wasn't gonna go back and help [TS]

01:05:06   them [TS]

01:05:06   straighten out there straighten out [TS]

01:05:10   their problem and it turned out not to [TS]

01:05:11   be that big of a problem but during that [TS]

01:05:13   era during that time she talked about it [TS]

01:05:15   a lot and she was like you know every [TS]

01:05:17   every a every character every space was [TS]

01:05:22   so valuable to us at the time who that [TS]

01:05:25   you know two more two more characters in [TS]

01:05:29   a line of code was you know that we were [TS]

01:05:32   trying to we're trying to pare it down [TS]

01:05:34   to make it as efficient as possible we [TS]

01:05:37   want then you were just throwing an [TS]

01:05:38   extra two numbers in there to stipulate [TS]

01:05:42   the date [TS]

01:05:43   whereas whereas I have five Twitter [TS]

01:05:44   applications on the pocket computer [TS]

01:05:46   yeah and and so you know she was like [TS]

01:05:50   that's just that's just how it was weird [TS]

01:05:52   nobody was looking to the year 2001 [TS]

01:05:54   because there is none of us thought that [TS]

01:05:56   this stuff would still be running them [TS]

01:05:57   there was not a single one of us in 1967 [TS]

01:06:02   that thought that the stuff we were [TS]

01:06:03   riding would still be running insurance [TS]

01:06:06   companies in 40 years and so I think [TS]

01:06:11   that way about emoticons i think that [TS]

01:06:13   the every emoticon that gets used in the [TS]

01:06:16   future that will be an emotion and has [TS]

01:06:20   to get parsed by somebody down the line [TS]

01:06:22   oh I see what you're saying is anyway [TS]

01:06:25   that will have longevity some archivist [TS]

01:06:28   who is going to be really like another [TS]

01:06:31   smiley face but you don't think they'll [TS]

01:06:33   have a way to parse that look like [TS]

01:06:34   regular expressions [TS]

01:06:35   something that will just come up the [TS]

01:06:36   machines exactly the logic they used [TS]

01:06:39   when the one about writing code in the [TS]

01:06:40   sixties you think there'll be something [TS]

01:06:42   they'll be some magic floating car that [TS]

01:06:45   solve this problem [TS]

01:06:46   I don't think so I what happens is it's [TS]

01:06:50   good some some schmuck at the library of [TS]

01:06:53   congress is like God grown man's tweets [TS]

01:06:55   all have these smiley face that's not [TS]

01:06:58   fair up if they could find a way to [TS]

01:07:01   parse out the poop jokes i think i think [TS]

01:07:03   the last just fine now I've thought [TS]

01:07:04   about getting a catchphrase i'm trying [TS]

01:07:06   to think what i really say when I make a [TS]

01:07:07   smiley face you don't mean they always [TS]

01:07:10   make it sound so simple you buy one of [TS]

01:07:11   those internet books in the mid-nineties [TS]

01:07:12   it would say you know like like smiley [TS]

01:07:15   face means just kidding or whatever [TS]

01:07:17   right [TS]

01:07:18   write it as much as they say in your [TS]

01:07:20   face smiley faces you is so often used [TS]

01:07:24   as a take-back like you think it's [TS]

01:07:26   passive aggressive that's yes [TS]

01:07:28   yeah I think your fucking face smiley [TS]

01:07:30   face it's like so you don't think I'm my [TS]

01:07:32   fucking face [TS]

01:07:33   Oh see now it's coming together the text [TS]

01:07:36   the text some of the texts get under [TS]

01:07:39   your skin has smiling faces and there's [TS]

01:07:40   a part of it [TS]

01:07:41   anybody that the people shoot anybody [TS]

01:07:43   who has my phone number enough to text [TS]

01:07:44   me knows not to send a smiley face [TS]

01:07:47   intact [TS]

01:07:48   not at all no butBut I have started [TS]

01:07:52   writing in emails i just sent us such a [TS]

01:07:55   little a message there i've started [TS]

01:07:57   writing emails like your face and then [TS]

01:08:00   in parentheses Iraq smiley face emoticon [TS]

01:08:03   and perfect just the way this does a way [TS]

01:08:09   of saying I could play along [TS]

01:08:12   oh my god you sent me a smiley face with [TS]

01:08:14   a music note such as some others a 8th [TS]

01:08:16   notes maybe it's that it's animated to [TS]

01:08:19   this animated on yours [TS]

01:08:20   anime together notes are it's like 45 [TS]

01:08:23   notes and let me just found a much [TS]

01:08:25   bigger problem i hadn't I'm so sorry [TS]

01:08:27   John had no idea of sending you animated [TS]

01:08:29   music I'm really sorry about that [TS]

01:08:30   not animated online you get that new [TS]

01:08:31   skype probably it's all screwed up no I [TS]

01:08:33   haven't seen Scott that you do because [TS]

01:08:35   you told me that my skype was the best [TS]

01:08:37   skype and not to get a new skype for wow [TS]

01:08:40   I gotta find out I I you know what I [TS]

01:08:41   apologize for that you know this is part [TS]

01:08:43   of the problem being that guy i think i [TS]

01:08:44   have one wielding power that I don't [TS]

01:08:46   even understand [TS]

01:08:47   so this thing now is just gonna sit here [TS]

01:08:49   and it's a some kind of gift and it's [TS]

01:08:51   just gonna animate itself 4,000 years [TS]

01:08:53   ago when you exercise let's hear your [TS]

01:08:57   text technical expertise on things that [TS]

01:08:59   it is i'm going to animated gift and [TS]

01:09:02   some kind of gift problem is there you [TS]

01:09:04   gotta close to be dead and this thing [TS]

01:09:05   will still be smiling and dancing around [TS]

01:09:07   here [TS]

01:09:07   yeah yeah it's running the air traffic [TS]

01:09:09   control system slightly but i don't know [TS]

01:09:15   i need a catchphrase really is a [TS]

01:09:17   catchphrase [TS]

01:09:18   well maybe we should maybe we should put [TS]

01:09:20   it to the voters [TS]

01:09:21   yeah but you know what I don't think you [TS]

01:09:23   can know never let people put on a [TS]

01:09:24   catchphrase like going heavy a second [TS]

01:09:26   location but now you can't make that [TS]

01:09:29   stuff up it's like people give [TS]

01:09:30   themselves nicknames or you know this is [TS]

01:09:32   really not so different from wearing the [TS]

01:09:33   Duster but i'm not really sure what the [TS]

01:09:35   impression is that your supposed to be [TS]

01:09:38   giving with the Duster a lot of times [TS]

01:09:40   that's you're taller heavier nerves [TS]

01:09:41   where the Duster yeah what's the dusters [TS]

01:09:44   to communicate that they are high plains [TS]

01:09:46   drifters or that they are road warrior [TS]

01:09:50   or that they have five subway sandwich [TS]

01:09:52   it's like it's cooked 5 subway [TS]

01:09:54   sandwiches in a custom-made leather [TS]

01:09:57   subway sandwich rolls pretty colored [TS]

01:09:58   role in the cinco I i think i think the [TS]

01:10:02   duster and it is a it's a way to stand [TS]

01:10:07   at the entrance to a parking garage and [TS]

01:10:11   look like you mean some serious business [TS]

01:10:14   you know I mean like the Duster is the [TS]

01:10:17   universal symbol of what i got on under [TS]

01:10:21   this coat right like you in the cape [TS]

01:10:26   I mean you see if you see a man the cake [TS]

01:10:27   and a cape and especially only going to [TS]

01:10:28   be honest the walgreens Cape you see a [TS]

01:10:31   man in a walgreens Cape i highly [TS]

01:10:33   recommend you run for your lives [TS]

01:10:35   he's gonna need a nap soon that's not [TS]

01:10:38   without a thing that's not a thing I [TS]

01:10:40   mean I'm probably the one fully grown [TS]

01:10:42   man in a walgreens keep that isn't on [TS]

01:10:45   Halloween that you should walk toward if [TS]

01:10:48   you see me in a walgreens cape by all [TS]

01:10:50   means come over and introduce yourself [TS]

01:10:52   but anyone else hell no you should've [TS]

01:11:01   asked to play the cello i'm going to [TS]

01:11:03   send you this cello [TS]

01:11:04   how would you know how would you send [TS]

01:11:06   something like that he just ship it went [TS]

01:11:08   overnight that nose is a real challenge [TS]

01:11:09   is this like jello it's somewhere [TS]

01:11:12   between a real and junk cello look at [TS]

01:11:15   started cello is like once a special ok [TS]

01:11:18   as it does have a bow [TS]

01:11:21   it's a german starter challenge has a [TS]

01:11:22   bow [TS]

01:11:24   okay and is 908 you the information is [TS]

01:11:29   on the fingers that you're the bridges [TS]

01:11:30   and fucked up you know i can understand [TS]

01:11:32   perfectly useful instrument need to get [TS]

01:11:33   it setup or refracted or anything out of [TS]

01:11:35   the usual needed it you know you re [TS]

01:11:37   friended know it's a it's a perfectly [TS]

01:11:41   good instrument I've used it on long [TS]

01:11:43   winters records but it's a it's just a [TS]

01:11:45   would you like to count out on the back [TS]

01:11:47   like a bluegrass band how you play it [TS]

01:11:48   yeah i used an online setting up a [TS]

01:11:51   corner and not use it as inspiration and [TS]

01:11:54   sing to it you know it's a lie i'm just [TS]

01:11:58   i'm i'm starting to look at i'm going to [TS]

01:12:00   look at my life and realize that I am a [TS]

01:12:01   hoarder and that i have not become a [TS]

01:12:05   hoarder who lives like in a can in a [TS]

01:12:08   shipping container because i still have [TS]

01:12:10   that there's still the the premise that [TS]

01:12:13   things are like stacked and ordered in a [TS]

01:12:16   way but I don't need a cello if I needed [TS]

01:12:20   if I need to tell apart on along with [TS]

01:12:21   his record i can have a cello player i [TS]

01:12:24   can hire a channel player who I don't [TS]

01:12:27   need to own a cello as a country you [TS]

01:12:28   might at some point that we think I [TS]

01:12:30   might need this [TS]

01:12:31   Oh everything I'm looking at everything [TS]

01:12:32   I'm like definitely need that the [TS]

01:12:36   candles your candles and get those [TS]

01:12:37   candles what if there's a power outage [TS]

01:12:39   or what if I become a phantom [TS]

01:12:42   I got a lot of bells here [TS]

01:12:46   hmm i don't strictly need I'm very very [TS]

01:12:48   interested in hoarding especially [TS]

01:12:50   because i've had to clean my office this [TS]

01:12:51   week I don't want to get into that but [TS]

01:12:53   it's been but I think if you if you [TS]

01:12:55   collect things here's the thing is that [TS]

01:12:57   a lot of people who say they're [TS]

01:12:58   collectors are hoarders and there's [TS]

01:13:00   usually ways to tell if you've collected [TS]

01:13:01   things and you put them in some kind of [TS]

01:13:03   an order where you can see them and if [TS]

01:13:05   you selected which ones to keep in which [TS]

01:13:07   ones to get away with what you mean like [TS]

01:13:09   if you've got like if you give you [TS]

01:13:11   collect what like if you collect like [TS]

01:13:13   bus of Hitler like if you've got five of [TS]

01:13:15   those and you can arrange them [TS]

01:13:17   let's just take my opportunities and I [TS]

01:13:18   want to give you any ideas but have you [TS]

01:13:21   have a Hitler bust and you five of them [TS]

01:13:23   and look they're all different friend [TS]

01:13:24   collected et's odd had to be [TS]

01:13:26   non-licensed ETS but like a flea markets [TS]

01:13:28   my friend Dennis would always pick up [TS]

01:13:30   any tease cookie jars but they had to be [TS]

01:13:32   he would not buy one set of unlicensed [TS]

01:13:34   and he had them over the fireplace and [TS]

01:13:35   was outstanding [TS]

01:13:36   that's a lot like having a cape to be [TS]

01:13:38   honest you walk into that place you see [TS]

01:13:39   like five or six like poorly painted [TS]

01:13:40   et's start thinking about your life in [TS]

01:13:43   your case like all your candles being [TS]

01:13:45   together on your piano [TS]

01:13:46   yes super creepy but i think that [TS]

01:13:48   constitutes a collection of the things [TS]

01:13:49   that you have in boxes that you don't [TS]

01:13:51   put out [TS]

01:13:51   oh no except a picture frames that's [TS]

01:14:01   challenging how are you going to display [TS]

01:14:02   picture frames that you need pictures [TS]

01:14:05   that's what I'm sorry but you're not [TS]

01:14:06   here's the thing and I don't mean to go [TS]

01:14:07   aldara dog here but you don't want [TS]

01:14:09   people thinking about what's inside you [TS]

01:14:10   want them thinking about the frame [TS]

01:14:12   itself right well that still ahead still [TS]

01:14:17   it's more complicated than that you have [TS]

01:14:18   the jury's still out [TS]

01:14:20   you're not sure if you just you knew [TS]

01:14:21   that you needed the frames you might [TS]

01:14:23   need him someday and you'll figure it [TS]

01:14:24   out later right exactly [TS]

01:14:26   that's not bad people like my friends [TS]

01:14:27   and my friend Scott pluff who plays [TS]

01:14:30   drums in a band you may have heard of a [TS]

01:14:32   called the spill [TS]

01:14:34   he has a collection of of not unlike [TS]

01:14:39   your not your friend who collects [TS]

01:14:41   unlicensed et's he has a collection of [TS]

01:14:44   of portraits hanging on a room of a in a [TS]

01:14:48   room of this house which is a collection [TS]

01:14:50   of portraits like you've seen a lot of [TS]

01:14:53   places like if there was a couple of [TS]

01:14:55   different bars [TS]

01:14:56   in seattle where they've gone to thrift [TS]

01:14:57   stores and bought a bunch of oil [TS]

01:14:59   paintings of old guys are people and you [TS]

01:15:02   know it's a it's a it's a fairly common [TS]

01:15:04   decorating meme now right [TS]

01:15:06   the the mismatch set of thrift store [TS]

01:15:10   portraits but Scott plus collection of [TS]

01:15:15   portraits is remarkable because it [TS]

01:15:20   they're all like found objects but [TS]

01:15:24   because he has this incredible aesthetic [TS]

01:15:27   that each one of them is an amazing [TS]

01:15:30   portrait you know it he did not do the [TS]

01:15:34   thing where he went to three stores and [TS]

01:15:35   was like oh there's a portrait of weird [TS]

01:15:38   guy i'll buy it it's only a dollar who [TS]

01:15:40   and then suddenly he had a house full of [TS]

01:15:42   these things like what he's done is over [TS]

01:15:45   the course of years he has only chosen [TS]

01:15:49   the most amazing portraits that uh you [TS]

01:15:53   know up [TS]

01:15:54   he must have passed on a hundred to have [TS]

01:15:57   this collection of 12 he must have [TS]

01:15:59   passed on thousand oh he's discerning is [TS]

01:16:02   discerning and so what what appears to [TS]

01:16:05   be you go in there and you're like oh [TS]

01:16:07   that's cool he's got a quirky set of of [TS]

01:16:09   these things but if you look at any one [TS]

01:16:10   of them you're like well now that is [TS]

01:16:12   incredible that thing and and he's not a [TS]

01:16:17   hoarder you know he does not fall for [TS]

01:16:19   the trap of like I collect candlesticks [TS]

01:16:21   so I have 600 of them [TS]

01:16:22   he's like I collect candlesticks so i [TS]

01:16:25   have six of them but each one of them is [TS]

01:16:27   the best candlestick you ever saw and [TS]

01:16:30   that's what I aspire to [TS]

01:16:33   right but it's very hard for me to walk [TS]

01:16:36   past you know if I'm collecting [TS]

01:16:39   candlesticks it's very hard for me to [TS]

01:16:41   walk past one and then once i have it [TS]

01:16:44   here is what makes me a hoarder it's [TS]

01:16:46   very difficult for me to go you know [TS]

01:16:48   what this candlestick doesn't meet my [TS]

01:16:49   standards so I'm gonna I'm not gonna I'm [TS]

01:16:52   not gonna throw in the good about the [TS]

01:16:53   kind of luminary Sophie's Choice you [TS]

01:16:54   it's a lot of people like one in one out [TS]

01:16:56   it's not a bad idea unless you have the [TS]

01:16:58   storage space and you rotate it out like [TS]

01:16:59   a museum [TS]

01:17:00   yeah one in one out and that's [TS]

01:17:01   absolutely how it should be or one into [TS]

01:17:04   out you know how you decide on you're [TS]

01:17:05   not picking up a picture frame it seems [TS]

01:17:07   like you must encounter a lot of picture [TS]

01:17:08   frames [TS]

01:17:09   I do and I picture frames you know they [TS]

01:17:13   come in standard sizes so it's always [TS]

01:17:15   nice to find them when they're they're [TS]

01:17:17   weird sizes and I just like you know i [TS]

01:17:19   like them wear it it's old and some hold [TS]

01:17:22   its it's obvious that it sat on some [TS]

01:17:25   grandmother's piano for 60 years with [TS]

01:17:29   her portrait of her dead son it in that [TS]

01:17:32   stuff that stuff really speaks to me but [TS]

01:17:36   I have too many of them right now [TS]

01:17:37   not gonna lie I don't get into too much [TS]

01:17:39   detail but for for external reasons that [TS]

01:17:43   are basically i had there's gonna have [TS]

01:17:46   to be somebody who comes into my office [TS]

01:17:48   which is something that doesn't happen [TS]

01:17:50   like this is this is my secret my secret [TS]

01:17:52   you know Merlin dungeon like this this [TS]

01:17:54   is never meant it is it was it's not a [TS]

01:17:57   studio you don't come in there's no open [TS]

01:17:59   houses there's no canapés like I sneak [TS]

01:18:01   in and lock the door right right and and [TS]

01:18:05   as it happens somebody would have to be [TS]

01:18:07   in here in the next couple weeks and I [TS]

01:18:08   had to really scramble to get cleaned up [TS]

01:18:11   which is good because it was time but it [TS]

01:18:13   makes me realize how much stuff I [TS]

01:18:14   tastily keep for absolutely no reason [TS]

01:18:16   and i don't want to call it a collection [TS]

01:18:19   but it makes me feel a little whore d [TS]

01:18:20   and I don't feel good about it but i'll [TS]

01:18:22   find stuff like in and this is I'm gonna [TS]

01:18:24   crack about this on Twitter the other [TS]

01:18:25   day like don't throw that away that's a [TS]

01:18:26   really nice box [TS]

01:18:27   I got hoes words have ever come out of [TS]

01:18:29   your mouth but that's that's a good sign [TS]

01:18:31   that the crazy is is is in there [TS]

01:18:32   somewhere [TS]

01:18:33   let's keep something because it's a good [TS]

01:18:35   box really like a cardboard box in my [TS]

01:18:38   case I have I have a collection of cards [TS]

01:18:40   i love i really you know one of those [TS]

01:18:42   real rigid ones that they can really [TS]

01:18:43   stand up its good side sometimes you [TS]

01:18:45   want a box [TS]

01:18:46   now you know that you've moved when you [TS]

01:18:48   move a lot of people to go we gotta go [TS]

01:18:49   get some big boxes you do not want big [TS]

01:18:51   boxes especially for books right you [TS]

01:18:53   want something carry boxes the small box [TS]

01:18:56   is not something to be treated lightly [TS]

01:18:57   you know but then you get a storm you [TS]

01:18:59   get boxes for your boxes in my case I'm [TS]

01:19:01   sitting there like and I'm sitting there [TS]

01:19:02   and i already have so many office [TS]

01:19:05   supplies i have so many folders [TS]

01:19:06   sometimes when I need to relax i buy [TS]

01:19:08   notebook or index cards and unwind [TS]

01:19:11   I know how much you like an index card [TS]

01:19:13   and so I've got a lot of those and I [TS]

01:19:16   mean what i would have seemed to have a [TS]

01:19:17   lot of that I was never aware of it and [TS]

01:19:19   you don't see this until you have to put [TS]

01:19:20   it all in one place right [TS]

01:19:21   you seem like you've got a pretty tiny [TS]

01:19:23   house so you don't run into this in my [TS]

01:19:24   case I can't believe how many almost [TS]

01:19:26   full pads of post-it notes i have don't [TS]

01:19:29   post it for anything [TS]

01:19:31   I don't know why have them a huge box of [TS]

01:19:33   almost full post it notes me know i do [TS]

01:19:36   really not because i have ever bought a [TS]

01:19:39   post-it note in my life but because my [TS]

01:19:41   dad and my mom were both posted note [TS]

01:19:45   maniacs your mom doesn't strike me as [TS]

01:19:49   opposed to a person well no she's not [TS]

01:19:50   now she's moved on you know what she is [TS]

01:19:52   she well for a long time she was using [TS]

01:19:54   index chalkboard know now she just uses [TS]

01:19:57   her phone she's become a complete [TS]

01:19:58   computer it's all in the computer and I [TS]

01:20:00   have no context for understanding that [TS]

01:20:01   really yeah we know posting up people [TS]

01:20:04   you know you know I'm just telling you [TS]

01:20:05   it's little things like cats and [TS]

01:20:07   scrapbooking I'm telling you I'm telling [TS]

01:20:09   you [TS]

01:20:10   eventually the post-it notes will eat [TS]

01:20:12   your face we gonna happen hate your toes [TS]

01:20:14   your time Patrick toes and put a sign on [TS]

01:20:21   your toe mr. Mullins please do not eat [TS]

01:20:25   no it's I think it's a hoarding thing I [TS]

01:20:28   think I think posting know people you [TS]

01:20:29   know I think that they're worried [TS]

01:20:31   they're worried i think i think courting [TS]

01:20:33   is about the fear of loss [TS]

01:20:34   well you know morning actually is not to [TS]

01:20:37   go all I dsm but like it is it is a form [TS]

01:20:40   of OCD right [TS]

01:20:42   sure it's just instead of being [TS]

01:20:44   obsessive compulsive about things you [TS]

01:20:46   know being in a row or any of those [TS]

01:20:47   famous haha things it's a compulsion [TS]

01:20:49   about like losing something like I can't [TS]

01:20:52   throw out this this box full of diapers [TS]

01:20:53   because there might be one in there [TS]

01:20:54   that's an important memory or have [TS]

01:20:56   diamonds in it or something [TS]

01:20:58   you've got this but you encounter with [TS]

01:20:59   people and this is and this is why I [TS]

01:21:01   worry about scrapbooking you you are [TS]

01:21:03   kind of scrapbooking john and i think [TS]

01:21:04   that's something to be aware of just [TS]

01:21:05   even having a box full of post- you [TS]

01:21:07   don't use something I would just if I [TS]

01:21:08   may say something I want to think about [TS]

01:21:10   well let me ask you this how many shoe [TS]

01:21:13   boxes of power adapters to you have here [TS]

01:21:19   in your life near me that near you [TS]

01:21:24   couldn't handle me put it this way i [TS]

01:21:26   will anything that's got a USB dingus on [TS]

01:21:30   it I have a lot of trouble throwing out [TS]

01:21:31   even if it even if I've got like 500 of [TS]

01:21:34   them [TS]

01:21:35   yeah because because they're always be a [TS]

01:21:36   time right where I feel like I i need [TS]

01:21:38   that I can't get rid of that and and [TS]

01:21:40   this is the part of the problem is that [TS]

01:21:41   when you become this way about stuff is [TS]

01:21:43   you lose track of how much of it you [TS]

01:21:44   actually have and that's when it becomes [TS]

01:21:46   dangerous because not only are you going [TS]

01:21:48   to keep way more than you need [TS]

01:21:50   but if you don't know in the past I've [TS]

01:21:52   been good about this and I go okay [TS]

01:21:53   everything to us beating us has to go in [TS]

01:21:55   this box and then by the time don't they [TS]

01:21:57   look I go holy fucking shit [TS]

01:21:59   yeah I cannot believe how many USB to [TS]

01:22:02   like standard USB to mini-usb like male [TS]

01:22:06   chords I've got it's completely [TS]

01:22:07   ridiculous idea for that for me it's [TS]

01:22:10   notebooks be serious [TS]

01:22:12   this is what I'm alone this i have a [TS]

01:22:13   serious note book problem and sometimes [TS]

01:22:15   I'll use them sometimes I'll just pick [TS]

01:22:17   them up because they're cool and you [TS]

01:22:19   know it's funny because I make fun the [TS]

01:22:20   notebook people a lot because you know [TS]

01:22:21   for that haha you don't actually right [TS]

01:22:23   in your notebooks have notebooks are [TS]

01:22:24   right in but i also just collect [TS]

01:22:26   interesting ones that iphone oh yeah [TS]

01:22:27   they're beautiful little items aren't [TS]

01:22:29   they yeah yeah [TS]

01:22:30   icw collected is is you imagining a trip [TS]

01:22:36   you're going to take we're going to [TS]

01:22:38   write every day for you imagine sitting [TS]

01:22:39   on a park bench and sketching me and [TS]

01:22:42   maybe that could be could be used to be [TS]

01:22:44   for me I mean I every i would buy a [TS]

01:22:46   notebook and I would just look at and [TS]
